Second Helpings - Jade Thirlwall

Week 2 of our summer Second Helpings and we’re travelling back to November 2021 where we had pop princess, Jade Thirwall. Jade came over to mums for her favourite meal, a roast chicken dinner with all the trimmings! Turning up in full glam after a long photo shoot, it was just what the doctor ordered for our girl. She talked about her mum’s mince pies - and not the Christmas kind - her penchant for putting crisps in a tuna sarnie, drinking Malibu and always wanting the economy meal on the aeroplane. We discuss her beautiful relationship with the LGBTQ+ community and her obsession with Diana Ross. It’s all in there! Thank you Jade, you gem! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy https://acast.com/privacy for more information.

• 1:05Jessie Ware?

Hello and welcome to Second Helpings, where we give you some of our wonderful guests from years back that we've enjoyed wonderful dinners and chats with. This week, we have the brilliant Jade. She's one of the people that has one name now. Like Cher? She's Jade.

• 1:21Speaker 03

Was she still in Little Mix when we had her?

• 1:23Jessie Ware?

Yes, she was. It was season 12. It was recorded in Clapham and it was back in 2021. She came over because Little Mix had a greatest hits record out to mark their 10th anniversary. And both her bandmates, Leanne and Perry, were on maternity leave. So she was doing all the promo for it.

• 1:42Speaker 03

  Love her.

• 1:42Jessie Ware?

Because she's that kind of gal. Lenny, you made a delicious roast dinner with all the trimmings because we know how much Jade loves a roast dinner. And she'd just come from a photo shoot and she looked incredibly glamorous. And also, can we also say that Jade has gone on to have such an exciting solo career? She made the best pop song of 2024.

• 2:06Speaker 03

  Angel of my dreams.

• 2:07Jessie Ware?

She's so brilliant. I went to watch her at Glastonbury where she absolutely killed it in the woodcigs.

• 2:13Speaker 03

  She's got a gorgeous voice.

• 2:15Jessie Ware?

Yeah, she's gifted. She's brilliant. So we're so happy to see all the success she's having. Here it is, Jade on table manners.

• 2:31Jessie Ware?

You've rocked up, you've been kicked out of your cab, I don't understand what happened there.

• 2:36Speaker 03

  It's not so gorgeous.

• 2:37Speaker 04

They would just wait for me, thank you.

• 2:38Jessie Ware?

To ascribe to the listener what you're wearing.

• 2:41Speaker 04

So I am wearing a very colourful bougie tracksuit.

• 2:46Jessie Ware?

Oversized, colourful, the rainbow colours are fully in there.

• 2:50Speaker 03

But what's on the front there?

• 2:51Speaker 04

Skull with a knife through it.

• 2:53Speaker 03

Oh, a skull with a knife, it looks like you're gonna go skateboarding.

• 2:56Speaker 04

  Yeah, it's giving Ed Hardy.

• 2:58Jessie Ware?

It is quite, is it Ed Hardy?

• 3:00Speaker 04

No, it's a cheaper version, I think. Yeah, so that, and then I'm giving you an Ariana Grande ponytail.

• 3:07Jessie Ware?

  It's a frigging pony.

• 3:09Speaker 04

  It is, isn't it?

• 3:09Jessie Ware?

  I mean, it's-

• 3:10Speaker 03

  Is that all yours darling?

• 3:11Speaker 04

I wish. Well, a lot of it is, but to here.

• 3:14Speaker 03

Well Cheryl Cole, when he said, "Is that your Cheryl?", she said, "I bought it."

• 3:17Speaker 04

Oh, did she? To be honest, I don't usually wear extra pieces and things, but I've been at a photo shoot today and I had to give them all.

• 3:24Speaker 03

Do you like photo shoots? I hate them.

• 3:27Speaker 04

Not really. They're very, they're quite tedious, aren't they?

• 3:31Speaker 03

Wrap around your face and then-

• 3:32Speaker 04

I know, we did seven looks today.

• 3:34Jessie Ware?

Wow, how long have you been there?

• 3:36Speaker 04

Yeah, so I've been here since this morning.

• 3:39Speaker 03

You're knackered, you need a good-

• 3:40Speaker 04

  I'm cream crackled.

• 3:41Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, I bet you are.

• 3:42Speaker 03

  I made you roast chicken.

• 3:44Speaker 04

Have you actually, Dawn, because that could bring a tear to my eye.

• 3:48Speaker 03

Oh god, I've made you roast chicken stuffing, roasties.

• 3:51Speaker 04

Cauliflower, cheese. Do you know that's honestly my favourite meal in the world.

• 3:57Jessie Ware?

  We, we did get told.

• 3:58Speaker 03

It's one of my favourites as well.

• 3:59Speaker 04

Northern stodge, Sunday roast, anything roasted is right up my street.

• 4:05Jessie Ware?

We thought that's what you needed after a hard day's work.

• 4:07Speaker 04

I really do, oh, thrilled to be here.

• 4:10Jessie Ware?

Um, cheers, we've got champagne, cheers, it is lovely to have you.

• 4:14Speaker 04

Oh, I'm so happy you made this happen, it's been a long time coming.

• 4:18Jessie Ware?

It has, but you're here now, and that's all that matters.

• 4:20Speaker 04

  Exactly.

• 4:21Jessie Ware?

Um, but I just have to say that this, this particularly, this ponytail is sensational, and the eye makeup's sensational, I kind of feel like you're wasted being in Clapham today, when you should be going out to a gay club.

• 4:31Speaker 04

I've actually, I've waved a lot of this off in the car with the baby wave, because before it was like a big dramatic glittery situation.

• 4:39Speaker 03

But do you like those full lashes, or do you like the individual, I like the individuals.

• 4:44Speaker 04

  Individuals usually, yeah.

• 4:46Jessie Ware?

Mum's a bit more au naturel.

• 4:47Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 4:48Speaker 03

No, not au naturel, as long as I had red lipstick on, I'm happy.

• 4:52Speaker 04

Oh, if you've got a lip on, you're good.

• 4:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 4:53Jessie Ware?

  Um, how's life?

• 4:56Speaker 04

Life is lovely, actually. I'm having a ball at the minute.

• 5:00Jessie Ware?

  You're doing loads of promo.

• 5:01Speaker 04

  Doing lots of promo.

• 5:02Jessie Ware?

The promos around the greatest hits.

• 5:04Speaker 04

Yes, so we've got a sort of greatest hits album happening, um, with a few new tracks. We've just released. Well, we've got a song out called Love Sweet Love. Um, and obviously both the girls are on maternity leave.

• 5:18Jessie Ware?

Yeah, so how's that working out? Are you basically, is that why you're doing seven looks babes?

• 5:23Speaker 04

I'm just woman, womaning the force.

• 5:25Jessie Ware?

So it, it, so they're not doing the promo, so you literally are taking one for the team.

• 5:30Speaker 04

  Doing the whole shebang, yeah.

• 5:32Jessie Ware?

  You're a good girl.

• 5:33Speaker 04

No, I'm happy to, because I'd hate to be at home twiddling me thumbs. I like being busy. I like working. So I'm more than happy to do it while they're resting off.

• 5:42Jessie Ware?

  But I, I feel like you're quite.

• 5:45Speaker 03

Have you seen the babies? Are you godmother to both?

• 5:49Speaker 04

Well, um, the fabulous rich auntie is, is, okay, is the title, I think. Um, I've seen Lee's bubba so far. She's got twins.

• 5:58Jessie Ware?

She had twins, yes. Crikey, she wasn't even that big.

• 6:03Speaker 04

  No, she's diddy, so.

• 6:05Speaker 03

She managed that well, didn't she?

• 6:07Speaker 04

  I know.

• 6:08Jessie Ware?

And she kept that quiet as well, very well.

• 6:11Speaker 03

  Once.

• 6:11Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 6:12Speaker 03

That's the way to do it.

• 6:13Speaker 04

It was quite, I mean, it was quite obvious to us because she is so tiny and like she had this big belly. I felt like to us it was obvious she was having twins. But, um, yeah, I went to see them, yeah, not so long ago actually, and they're beautiful. I haven't seen Perry's yet. I'm gonna go and see her soon. Um, but I was also like, you know, I wanted to give them a bit of space because we're, we are literally sisters and we're obsessed with each other. But I didn't wanna like intrude and remind them of work too soon, do you know what I mean? So, um, I give them a bit of time. But yeah, it's, it's very strange seeing them as mums. Because I always see us as like kids still, I don't know why. I feel like it never leaves you. The moment you get famous.

• 6:52Speaker 03

How old were you when you got chosen by, what's, to Lisa, wasn't?

• 6:57Speaker 04

Yeah, it was to Lisa. She was our mentor.

• 6:59Speaker 03

  You were eighteen?

• 7:00Speaker 04

I was eighteen, Perry was seventeen.

• 7:02Speaker 03

  Bloody hell.

• 7:03Speaker 04

Yeah, and like they say, don't, don't like when you get famous, that's the age you kind of stay a bit.

• 7:08Jessie Ware?

That's quite good, isn't it? I'm not. So, okay, so let's talk about. You and your food and growing up in Newcastle.

• 7:17Speaker 04

  South Shields.

• 7:18Jessie Ware?

  South Shields.

• 7:18Speaker 04

  Outside Newcastle.

• 7:19Jessie Ware?

  Okay, sorry.

• 7:20Speaker 04

  No, no, it's fine.

• 7:21Speaker 03

And what's that famous thing they all eat there, parmi?

• 7:24Speaker 04

  Parmi, yeah.

• 7:25Jessie Ware?

That's what Cheryl talks about, isn't it?

• 7:26Speaker 03

It's like chicken with cheese on the top.

• 7:29Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 7:30Speaker 03

  And it's very slimming.

• 7:31Speaker 04

It is, yeah, well, I mean. I'm not so sure, but.

• 7:34Speaker 03

  Jordy food.

• 7:35Speaker 04

Yeah, I'll just, I've grown up loving northern stodge. Mince and dumplings, have you heard of that delicacy?

• 7:42Jessie Ware?

I've heard about it. Can you get it anywhere very good in London?

• 7:46Speaker 04

No, very rare. I don't think anywhere.

• 7:49Speaker 03

Do you make your dumplings with suet?

• 7:51Speaker 04

  Suet, yeah, do it properly.

• 7:53Jessie Ware?

Have you tried to make it yourself?

• 7:54Speaker 04

Yeah, I can make a mince and dumplings.

• 7:56Jessie Ware?

  And does Jordan like that?

• 7:57Speaker 04

Well, he's, um, he doesn't eat red meat, so I tried doing a veggie one, but it's just not.

• 8:02Jessie Ware?

With corn, it's not gonna do the same.

• 8:04Speaker 04

No, it's gotta be the proper lamb or beef mince.

• 8:07Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 8:07Speaker 03

I bought some mince by Richmond's, you know who make the sausages?

• 8:11Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 8:12Speaker 03

And it looks exactly like beef mince, the way they've done it.

• 8:15Jessie Ware?

  What is it, pork mince?

• 8:16Speaker 03

  No, it's soy mince.

• 8:17Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 8:18Speaker 03

It's exactly like, you have a look.

• 8:20Speaker 04

I would try Richmond, cause I've, I've tried their vegan sausages.

• 8:24Speaker 03

  And are they good?

• 8:24Speaker 04

They're all right, actually, yeah, the veggie sausages, but I love a Richmond sausage.

• 8:28Speaker 03

It's so annoying being with a vegetarian if you're not.

• 8:30Speaker 04

As a northerner, we love like red meat and, you know, lamb and mince and, um, you know, like mince pies and steak bakes from Greg's.

• 8:41Jessie Ware?

  Steak bakes.

• 8:42Speaker 04

We love it all, the stodgy, the better, so, yeah, but also being part Arab as well, I grew up having a lot of curries. Yes, so my mom.

• 8:51Jessie Ware?

  Your heritage, yeah.

• 8:52Speaker 04

My mom's half Yemeni and quarter Egyptian.

• 8:56Speaker 03

  How exciting.

• 8:57Jessie Ware?

Then I wanna know what was on the dining table.

• 8:59Speaker 04

So, well, my grandad used to cook a lot for me and he'd make, it's, it is literally just called Yemeni chicken soup.

• 9:06Jessie Ware?

  Hmm.

• 9:07Speaker 04

Which is like chicken on the bone, um, and it's quite a watery texture.

• 9:13Jessie Ware?

  A broth?

• 9:14Speaker 04

Yeah, kind of broth-y and it's just goodness, lots of spices.

• 9:18Speaker 03

  Flavoured with?

• 9:19Speaker 04

Lots of flavour, um, cardamom, uh, what else is in there, turmeric?

• 9:24Speaker 03

  Cumin?

• 9:25Speaker 04

  Cumin.

• 9:26Speaker 03

  Cinnamon?

• 9:27Speaker 04

Not cinnamon, all, all the Arab spices combined.

• 9:31Speaker 03

Properly, or something like that, or sumac or something.

• 9:35Speaker 04

And then you make with it Arab bread, which is like so easy to make, it's literally just butter, flour and, uh.

• 9:42Speaker 03

I'd love to try that. Was it like a flatbread?

• 9:44Speaker 04

  Yeah, very flat, very buttery.

• 9:46Speaker 03

  Can you make that?

• 9:47Speaker 04

  I can make that, yeah.

• 9:48Speaker 03

Jay, will you give us your recipes?

• 9:50Speaker 04

  I absolutely will.

• 9:51Speaker 03

Because I absolutely love to make that.

• 9:53Speaker 04

Are you a good cook? Um, uh, no.

• 9:56Speaker 03

You did Bake Off, didn't you?

• 9:57Speaker 04

  I did Bake Off.

• 9:58Speaker 03

  How did you do?

• 9:58Speaker 04

  I actually won it.

• 10:00Speaker 03

  Oh!

• 10:00Speaker 04

But it was like best of a by a bunch. I was, I really looked, I really looked out that week because I went into it thinking you're going to be terrible. I love to bake, but I'm not that good at it, but I just really enjoy it.

• 10:12Speaker 03

What was your showstopper that really stopped the show?

• 10:14Speaker 04

I did a gingerbread and meringue Little Mix concert.

• 10:18Speaker 03

  Oh!

• 10:19Speaker 04

Yeah, it was really cute. But on the day, like I'd prepared and prepared and I thought, it's okay, I can do this. But I can see why when people get in the tent, they have like meltdowns because it is quite stressful.

• 10:30Speaker 03

  Is it hot in there?

• 10:31Speaker 04

  It's hot.

• 10:32Speaker 03

  Why is it so hot?

• 10:33Speaker 04

Because you're just in a little baking oven, I guess.

• 10:36Speaker 03

Oh yeah, and they've got this load of ovens going.

• 10:39Speaker 04

And they do it in the summer.

• 10:40Speaker 03

  Always in the summer, yeah.

• 10:42Speaker 04

I suppose it adds to the drama, doesn't it, when you have the meltdown over chocolate?

• 10:45Speaker 03

What was Paul Hollywood really like? I fancy him.

• 10:48Speaker 04

  Me too.

• 10:48Speaker 03

  What, what is it?

• 10:50Speaker 04

  It's the eyes.

• 10:50Speaker 03

Because it's the eyes, he's so gorgeous and you know he's a badun.

• 10:54Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 10:54Speaker 03

  But the eyes are gorgeous.

• 10:56Speaker 04

I think he loves that he's the one that walks around and watches you and puts you on edge.

• 11:00Speaker 03

Is he quite fit? I mean, when he walks, is he good looking?

• 11:03Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah, he is. He was a bit shorter in real life.

• 11:06Speaker 03

Oh, it's so disappointing, isn't it? They're always short, aren't they?

• 11:10Speaker 04

He was definitely shorter than I thought he was going to be, but he was lovely. But yeah, it puts you on edge a bit because you're trying, you're already flapping because you know if you're cooking for someone, well, you'll know exactly what it's like. You want to impress them, don't you?

• 11:20Speaker 03

  Yeah, you do.

• 11:21Speaker 04

When you've got them peering over you every two seconds as you're doing it and then asking you questions as you're cooking.

• 11:26Speaker 03

You're like, I'm sifting, I'm measuring. And he's talking about, don't worry, we swear all the time.

• 11:31Speaker 04

Oh dear, that's all right then.

• 11:32Speaker 03

And did he talk about your soggy bottoms and things like that?

• 11:35Speaker 04

Yeah, because I, I think for the, it's not the technical, the one where you can't see it until they reveal it to you.

• 11:41Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 11:42Speaker 04

It was a cherry lattes pie.

• 11:43Speaker 03

  Oh my god.

• 11:44Speaker 04

But luckily for me, in lockdown, me mum had literally just taught us over FaceTime how to make a pie. So I looked out there as well. It was like all the stars aligned.

• 11:53Speaker 03

The gods were on your side.

• 11:55Speaker 04

Really did. And I was like, oh, I know just how to make a pie. Not a cherry one, but eh.

• 11:59Speaker 03

So you had your mum cooking a lot?

• 12:01Speaker 04

Yes, my mum loves to cook.

• 12:02Speaker 03

And so she was kind of doing lattice pies?

• 12:06Speaker 04

Yeah, she, any sort of pie.

• 12:07Speaker 03

  Any pie?

• 12:08Speaker 04

Any pie. You know, corned beef pie.

• 12:11Speaker 03

  Oh, right.

• 12:12Speaker 04

  Minced pie.

• 12:13Speaker 03

  But that's mince meat pie.

• 12:15Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah, not a Christmasy one. It's literally like mince meat with gravy and onions.

• 12:19Speaker 03

  That sounds lovely.

• 12:20Speaker 04

Anything with gravy on is a winner for me.

• 12:23Speaker 03

So, were you, were you a fussy kid?

• 12:26Speaker 04

I, I mean, Jordan seems to think I'm quite fussy, my boyfriend, because I think I grew up just liking what I like. I feel like my mum only made us what she liked as well. So it was, you know, Sunday roast, mince and dumplings, you know, pies, fish and chips. Very like standard, you know, British cuisine, I suppose. And then on the other hand, it would be like curries and Arab food.

• 12:48Speaker 03

  Where's your dad from?

• 12:50Speaker 04

So my dad's from England. Yeah, he's white British, probably a bit of Irish.

• 12:55Speaker 03

  And where did they meet?

• 12:56Speaker 04

So they actually met via my uncle who was in the army and was friends with my dad and introduced my mum to my dad. And that's how that kind of came about, yeah. But there's like, there's quite a big Yemeni community in my hometown because we live right on the port of Tyne. And so my grandad was in the merchant navy as a fireman, came over to the UK and met my nana who was Egyptian.

• 13:22Speaker 03

  Oh, how lovely.

• 13:24Speaker 04

Yeah, but I think my nana died when my mum was really young, so we remarried. But, um, yeah, so that's kind of how.

• 13:30Speaker 03

So when you marry Jordan, and you heard it here first, are you going to have a bit of an Egyptian theme to the wedding?

• 13:38Speaker 04

  Maybe, I don't know.

• 13:39Speaker 03

Are you gonna come in on, in a, on a throne like Cleopatra?

• 13:42Speaker 04

May, maybe I should. I've, I mean, I love being as extra as possible.

• 13:46Speaker 03

Yeah, I think the Cleopatra look would be, the eyes are already there. But you're obsessed with Diana Ross.

• 13:52Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 13:52Speaker 03

This is your ultimate. How did that happen?

• 13:55Speaker 04

So I genuinely believe growing up that my mum was Diana Ross, because she looked the spit of her.

• 14:01Speaker 03

Oh, really? Your mum has big hair?

• 14:03Speaker 04

Yeah, she had the big hair and she's got big dewy eyes and she let me believe that she was Diana Ross. And every time she'd like go to bingo with her friends, she'd be like, I'm going to do a concert and I'd be obsessed.

• 14:15Speaker 03

Oh, my God, I love that.

• 14:16Speaker 04

So I wanted to be just like her. I know, I know. And this, this went on for a while.

• 14:21Speaker 03

Did you feel let down when you found out she wasn't Diana Ross?

• 14:24Speaker 04

  Yeah, a little bit.

• 14:25Speaker 03

And you had the most amazing fancy dress birthday party.

• 14:28Speaker 04

Yes, I dressed up as her.

• 14:29Speaker 03

Mum, you need to see this picture.

• 14:32Speaker 04

It was pretty iconic. Eh, I dressed.

• 14:34Jessie Ware?

  How old were you?

• 14:35Speaker 04

Oh, so many couple of years ago.

• 14:37Jessie Ware?

  Oh, it's two years ago.

• 14:38Speaker 04

But I did all growing up, like I'd go to the school disco and all the cool kids would be like halt and X and rah rah skirts. And I'd turn up in like a chiffon dinar oscon.

• 14:47Jessie Ware?

  I love this.

• 14:48Speaker 04

  Yeah, so extra.

• 14:49Jessie Ware?

So did your mum know you were gonna be a star from a lo- young age?

• 14:52Speaker 04

I think so. She definitely believed in me a lot.

• 14:55Jessie Ware?

Did you go to ballet and?

• 14:56Speaker 04

I did ballet, yes, did ballet and tap.

• 14:59Jessie Ware?

So what grade did you get to?

• 15:01Speaker 04

Well, I remember there was a conversation about doing an audition for Royal Ballet, cause I was really ditty. I mean, it never happened. I didn't have me Billy Elliot moment.

• 15:09Jessie Ware?

This is very similar to Cheryl.

• 15:12Speaker 04

Yeah, no, I I loved it and I think I just didn't love it enough though to like do it properly. Cause I got to the point where everyone started, you know, when you go on points and it's so damaging for your feet. You only wanna do it really if you want to be a ballerina and you know, mess your feet up like that. Cause I had friends that had like ingrown toenails and, you know, it was a hot mess. And I just thought at that point I said to me mum, oh no, I can't be bothered.

• 15:35Jessie Ware?

Do you, so when you, when you went for that audition, you'd obviously wa- watched X Factor?

• 15:40Speaker 04

Yes, I didn't, so I auditioned for the first time when I was fifteen. And I got through it at bootcamp and they made me do that awkward thing where like all the camera crew came to my school. And I had to stand on stage assembly and be like, I've got the X Factor. And then I had to come back a few weeks later, I'd be like, oh, I didn't get through and it was like mortifying.

• 16:00Jessie Ware?

  Oh babe.

• 16:01Speaker 04

I know, they really hyped it up.

• 16:03Jessie Ware?

But then you did get through?

• 16:04Speaker 04

Yes, and I auditioned again, got through it at bootcamp again.

• 16:07Jessie Ware?

Decide to audition again, cause you just wanted it?

• 16:10Speaker 04

  I just thought for me.

• 16:11Jessie Ware?

  Know anybody in the industry?

• 16:12Speaker 04

No, like, you know, I'm from a very small working class northern town and I'd write songs and I, I knew I wanted to be a singer. And I'd send in tapes to, you know, London in the hopes I'd get scouted or whatever. So for someone like me and me and my family, I could never have afforded to move to London. So that's why I really did appreciate shows like The X Factor back then, because it gave, you know, people like me an opportunity to, you know, try and make it. So, yeah, I went three times and then third time got put in the group.

• 16:43Jessie Ware?

Third time lucky, baby. So, Life on the Road.

• 16:46Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 16:46Jessie Ware?

  Are you missing it?

• 16:47Speaker 04

  Yes, massively.

• 16:48Jessie Ware?

How do you do? I mean, I believe, like, you are mega pop star, girl, girl group, pop star. I believe that, you know, you're doing arenas, like. I wanna know what food is on your rider, what you're demanding. I mean, I don't believe that you demand anything, Jade, you're too polite. But, but I need to know, because, I mean, mine are, mine's an academy tour and I'm gonna have a lovely time. But I just need some tips of something that's excellent on your rider.

• 17:14Speaker 04

I mean, we're not that diva-ish, to be honest. It's like.

• 17:17Jessie Ware?

Do you have anything that you can't live without?

• 17:19Speaker 04

I always have popcorn on the road.

• 17:21Jessie Ware?

  Oh, that's nice.

• 17:22Speaker 04

I like popcorn as a snack.

• 17:24Jessie Ware?

Yep, that's a good idea. You seem to make gassy though, no?

• 17:27Speaker 04

Yeah, and there has been a few times where, like, there'll be, like, popcorn in my teeth when I'm performing and I really feel it. It's one that gets stuck in your teeth, don't it?

• 17:35Jessie Ware?

  Bugger to get out.

• 17:36Speaker 04

But it's like a good light snack, I think, but I always have Yorkshire tea.

• 17:40Jessie Ware?

  Love Yorkshire tea.

• 17:41Speaker 04

On my rider, that's the only one I have.

• 17:43Jessie Ware?

Are you an aeroplane eater? We love aeroplane food.

• 17:46Speaker 04

Do you know what? I'm the one that gets, because obviously we're in our business, the budget allows it with the labour and stuff, but I always ask for the economy menu.

• 17:53Jessie Ware?

  You're kidding, why, Jade?

• 17:55Speaker 04

They're just doing bog standard chicken curry, that's all I want. I don't want this posh, chewy beef off the aeroplane. Do you know what? Sometimes they can't make, like, posh food nice on an aeroplane. Does that make sense?

• 18:09Jessie Ware?

So what is the posh food that you've been introduced to that you actually quite like?

• 18:13Speaker 04

  That I like?

• 18:14Jessie Ware?

Yeah. You're like, oh, I kinda like this life.

• 18:18Speaker 04

  No, I'm not.

• 18:19Jessie Ware?

  You a sushi girl?

• 18:20Speaker 04

  No, I don't like sushi.

• 18:22Jessie Ware?

  I don't blame you.

• 18:23Speaker 04

I would think I was a bit scarred.

• 18:24Jessie Ware?

  Give me a dumpling.

• 18:25Speaker 04

A dumpling any day of the week. We went to Japan once and we had a team.

• 18:30Jessie Ware?

I presume you're quite big in Japan. You're big everywhere.

• 18:32Speaker 04

We do quite well in Japan and I, Japan's like my favourite place in the world.

• 18:35Jessie Ware?

  Why?

• 18:36Speaker 04

It's just like a different world and they don't care that you're British. It's like, you either learn our language or you get lost in Japan.

• 18:43Jessie Ware?

And are the, are the, are the, is your audience older there or younger?

• 18:48Speaker 04

A bit of everything, actually. We did a festival once and I remember seeing in the crowd a lot of, like, grown men in Little Mix t-shirts. And this was back in the early days.

• 18:58Jessie Ware?

  Was this in Japan?

• 18:58Speaker 04

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 19:00Jessie Ware?

How did you feel about that? Were you like, finally the men.

• 19:02Speaker 04

Yeah, me, I don't know, I mean like. The majority of my personal male fans are usually like LGBT.

• 19:08Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 19:09Speaker 04

You know, and we love that.

• 19:10Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 19:10Speaker 04

But in Japan, it was, it was different, I think. I don't know. They just love pop culture, though they love girl bands, they love boy bands. But yeah, there was one time I went and they made us do this live TV thing. And in their culture, it's very rude to not accept food, like you have to eat it. And um we went to a fish market.

• 19:28Jessie Ware?

  Oh babe.

• 19:29Speaker 04

Absolutely fucking stunk. And I'm very bad with bad smells.

• 19:32Jessie Ware?

It was a very famous, it was in Tokyo?

• 19:33Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 19:34Jessie Ware?

  The famous fish market.

• 19:35Speaker 04

  Famous fish market.

• 19:36Jessie Ware?

Four in the morning or something, yeah.

• 19:37Speaker 04

And then we sat down and this was live TV, they presented us with like raw sushi, but it was like raw chicken sushi as well.

• 19:43Speaker 03

Oh my god, you've got bloody salmonella.

• 19:46Speaker 04

But it's rude not to, I had to eat it and pretend I loved it on live TV.

• 19:50Jessie Ware?

  Go throw up.

• 19:51Speaker 04

Oh, honestly, it's given us watery mouth thinking about it.

• 19:53Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 19:54Speaker 04

Yeah, so maybe that's scarred us a bit, but um.

• 19:58Speaker 03

  What's your favourite drink?

• 19:59Speaker 04

  As in alcohol?

• 20:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:01Speaker 04

I keep a classy and have a Malibu, do you know what I mean?

• 20:04Speaker 03

Do you like it with Malibu with?

• 20:06Jessie Ware?

  Pineapple?

• 20:07Speaker 04

Pineapple, yeah, or like orange juice. I do love.

• 20:11Speaker 03

We should have got some in.

• 20:12Speaker 04

I know, but it's like, I feel sometimes I'm embarrassed asking for it, because it is a very like fourteen year old drink, isn't it?

• 20:17Jessie Ware?

It's definitely kind of a holiday romance drink to me.

• 20:20Speaker 04

I think that's why I like it, it reminds us of being on holiday.

• 20:23Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 20:23Speaker 03

I was drinking lots. I'd just been to meet my other daughter in the Bahamas, only because I couldn't get into America. I didn't need another holiday.

• 20:31Jessie Ware?

  My tiny violin is.

• 20:33Speaker 04

  Yeah, oh, such a shame.

• 20:34Speaker 03

So we went and it was all cocktails. It was Bahama mama, yellow birds with galli. Yeah.

• 20:41Speaker 04

I like a Mai Tai, I've had them, they're yummy.

• 20:43Speaker 03

  Mai Tai and a daiquiri.

• 20:45Speaker 04

  I love a daiquiri.

• 20:46Jessie Ware?

I wanna know how this relationship, like this beautiful relationship between you and the LGBTQ community happened, because it is a thriving, beautiful, real relationship, like particularly you have. How did, when did you notice that this was?

• 21:04Speaker 04

  Um.

• 21:05Jessie Ware?

  A romance?

• 21:06Speaker 04

I feel like it's always been a part of my life, like being an ally, but it's not until like the past few years that I've understood what it means to be an ally and how to do that properly. But I suppose if I was like going right to the root of it. I think even from, my first love was drag culture before, you know, the sort of LGBT scene and as at a very young age, I didn't really obviously understand what that was. I would just see these divas like Diana Ross or Cher.

• 21:31Speaker 03

Have you ever been to Sunny Girls in Blackpool?

• 21:34Speaker 04

  No, I haven't, but I know I'd love it, I know I'd love it.

• 21:37Speaker 03

It's absolutely, it's like being in Paris at the Follie Berger.

• 21:41Speaker 04

  Obsessed, obsessed.

• 21:42Jessie Ware?

  I mean, ish.

• 21:43Speaker 03

  Ish, okay.

• 21:44Speaker 04

A little, a sprinkle of Blackpool, but we love that. But, you know, once a year, me and my family would always go to Benidorm and we'd go and see all the drag acts and they'd always.

• 21:53Speaker 03

They have drag acts, I didn't know that, did you?

• 21:56Speaker 04

Emulate, you know, the, the big queens and I'd watch it, it'd be fascinating. Yeah, there'd be loads of Diana Ross drag queens, obviously Cher, they'd do the Spice Girls. And I'd just watch it and I'd be like, who are these amazing, like, adult cartoons? And I'd love the big hair and I'd try and copy it and the makeup. So that was kind of like my first love of drag culture. And then I always found I'd come home, like my dad and, you know, all of these like cis hetero men around me would love it. And then we'd get back home and it was like, suddenly not celebrated anymore. It was very bizarre. So I would always associate Benidorm with this magical land where like anyone was accepted and then you'd come back home and it'd be like, oh no, we're not into that, do you know what I mean?

• 22:37Speaker 04

So, and then I'd get into musical theatre and I had a lot of LGBT friends, you know, during my teenage years. A lot of gay friends who couldn't come out or I would have to be their beard. Or they'd have to move out of South Shields to feel like they could live somewhere.

• 22:54Speaker 03

Do you think it's hard up north?

• 22:55Speaker 04

It's really hard. I think it's that like, yeah, a bit more small minded, a bit of an old fashioned mentality. And I don't think it's necessarily that, for a lot of people, they are willing to listen, but they just don't understand it. Cause it, you know, it's like passed through generations, isn't it? So if your granddad is like, you know, being brought up to be homophobic, then of course their son is gonna then, you know, listen to that.

• 23:18Speaker 03

  Until they're gay.

• 23:18Speaker 04

Yeah, exactly. And that toxic masculinity just seeps through each generation until somebody tries to, you know, change it. And so, yeah, it was, it was very like that growing up. And so from a very young age, I sort of understood that it was wrong. And I didn't agree with it, but I didn't know how to express, I suppose that I didn't agree with it. And then I moved to London.

• 23:41Speaker 03

  Articulate.

• 23:41Speaker 04

  Am I?

• 23:42Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 23:43Speaker 04

  Oh, thank you.

• 23:43Speaker 03

  Really, you explain it beautifully.

• 23:46Speaker 04

Oh, that's lovely to hear, actually. Sometimes I worry about my being articulate, being a broad Geordie.

• 23:50Speaker 03

  You're so articulate.

• 23:52Jessie Ware?

No, also you feel such a level of responsibility as an ally.

• 23:56Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah. And I think I moved to London and of course it was my gay friends that took me in and took me out to all the gay bars and, you know, I I was what I would consider like a basic bitch ally at that point.

• 24:07Speaker 03

  Basic bitch.

• 24:08Speaker 04

So, you know, very much loved the scene, loved my gay friends, would turn up to every event, but wasn't really an active ally, so to speak. So, um, yeah, that kind of went on for a bit. And then as the band grew, our LGBTQ audience grew. And then I think it just got to a point with me where I thought we're very much benefiting from this audience and not giving much back in return. And so that's kind of when I decided I wanted to be a better ally. I'd get messages from fans, you know, who were in the closet or were struggling or were from a country where, you know, countries where it's illegal. And and so I was like, oh, wow, like, I've actually got a platform here and I could really be doing more about that.

• 24:51Speaker 03

So would you perform in Russia?

• 24:55Speaker 04

I would, I would initially say no, but then, for instance, we got a gig in Dubai one time. And in my mind, it was like, I either don't go or I go and make a statement.

• 25:05Speaker 03

  Yeah, I think that's.

• 25:05Speaker 04

And give my fee to a charity and, you know, so I think it's case by case. I'm, I've got no intention of going to somewhere like Russia any time soon because I obviously don't believe in, you know, what's going on there. But at the same time, those places more than anyone else kind of need people to turn up and be an ally and, you know, fly that flag for them so they don't feel so alone. And I think as an Arab woman as well, it's very important for me with my Middle East fans to show them that they can have someone, you know, to look up to and realise they're not alone and it sort of thing. So, yeah, I guess it depends, but yeah, I reached out a stone wall initially and asked to like meet with them and like sort of teach me how to be a better ally and just learn more about it and the history

• 25:50Speaker 04

behind, you know, LGBT rights and all that stuff.

• 25:52Speaker 03

  Amazing.

• 25:53Speaker 04

And it's just been like a gradual thing. And now, yeah, I feel like I have sort of organically cemented myself in that world and. Yeah, I feel like there's obviously still a lot more I probably could be doing. But I'm doing my best and that's all that matters, I think.

• 26:10Speaker 03

  You are doing your best.

• 26:12Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 26:12Speaker 03

  And you explain it beautifully.

• 26:14Jessie Ware?

  But back to food.

• 26:15Speaker 04

  Obviously.

• 26:17Jessie Ware?

Um, what would, I mean, I I'm getting an inkling that you like, like, you know, quite.

• 26:24Speaker 03

How often do you go to Greg's, honestly, Jade?

• 26:27Speaker 04

Honestly, I live in Canary Wharf and they've just, they're just about open one.

• 26:31Jessie Ware?

Oh, my God, I love that you're not interested.

• 26:33Speaker 04

Because nobody else in Canary Wharf is asking for a Greg's.

• 26:37Jessie Ware?

Forget Gart Show Grill, forget all of that.

• 26:39Speaker 04

  I'm shocked, I'm shocked it's happening.

• 26:41Speaker 03

I absolutely understand that because their sandwiches.

• 26:44Speaker 04

  They're actually good, aren't they?

• 26:45Jessie Ware?

  Their tuna crunch.

• 26:46Speaker 03

Their tuna crunch is the best.

• 26:48Jessie Ware?

  I think they've stopped it.

• 26:49Speaker 03

  Why?

• 26:49Jessie Ware?

  I don't know.

• 26:51Speaker 03

  On a bloomer bread.

• 26:52Jessie Ware?

  It's very good.

• 26:53Speaker 03

  Gorgeous.

• 26:53Jessie Ware?

It's very good sweetness to the tuna and I appreciated that.

• 26:56Speaker 04

And they're just lovely. I love that. They're quite old school. You turn up and they've still got the hats on and stuff.

• 27:00Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 27:00Speaker 04

You know, every time you go there, it's like, oh, can I have a fresh one? I give you five minutes.

• 27:04Speaker 03

Sausage roll that that is that long.

• 27:06Jessie Ware?

Fucking Ed Sheeran at his wedding had Greg's sausage rolls piled up in a like, in a fucking pyramid.

• 27:11Speaker 04

I feel like I would do that. That and Toby Carvery's are roasting.

• 27:14Speaker 03

  Oh, my Toby Carvery.

• 27:17Speaker 04

  Yeah, all the gravy.

• 27:19Speaker 03

I'm gonna make a good gravy tonight.

• 27:21Jessie Ware?

Now, I just need to understand Toby Carvery because I.

• 27:24Speaker 03

They don't have them in London, I don't think.

• 27:26Jessie Ware?

I've seen, I think I've been to one in Isle of Wight.

• 27:29Speaker 03

  Love them.

• 27:30Speaker 04

  Same.

• 27:30Jessie Ware?

  Um.

• 27:31Speaker 03

You eat as much as you want.

• 27:32Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, I do like that.

• 27:33Speaker 03

But you know that we love that.

• 27:35Jessie Ware?

But is Toby Carvery a chain or is it a style?

• 27:40Speaker 03

  It's a chain, darling.

• 27:41Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 27:42Speaker 04

But I don't think many do that, like buffet style, do they?

• 27:45Speaker 03

There used to be one on the corner in Dulwich, The Grove was a Carvery, yeah.

• 27:50Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 27:50Speaker 03

  I love a Carvery.

• 27:51Speaker 04

  Same.

• 27:53Jessie Ware?

Well, I guess we kind of got our fix with the B H S Christmas dinners when we go and serve up. We love that.

• 27:58Speaker 03

British Home Stores Christmas dinner, but I'm so sorry they closed down their canteen. You go there for your Christmas dinner, you have a little chipolata with your stuffing. I loved it.

• 28:10Speaker 04

  I love it.

• 28:11Jessie Ware?

So I'm getting, you you you want bake off?

• 28:13Speaker 03

  She likes normal food, darling.

• 28:15Jessie Ware?

Normal food. So let's go into your last supper. You're about to go. To a desert island um for si- uh forever and you're having your last meal.

• 28:25Speaker 03

  No darling, six months.

• 28:27Jessie Ware?

No, I feel like we need to make the stakes a bit higher, a year.

• 28:32Jessie Ware?

  Starter, main, pudding, drink.

• 28:35Speaker 04

Starter would have to probably be a soup.

• 28:39Speaker 03

Really? Not many people say that.

• 28:42Jessie Ware?

Uh Danielle Heim said it and I poo-pooed her and then I realised that yours is my chicken soup, so I don't.

• 28:47Speaker 04

Like if you make a good soup, like anyone can make a soup, it's quite easy as well, but. You know when you get an elite one and you get a gorgeous bread with it to dip in with.

• 28:56Jessie Ware?

So hon, are you going like Yemeni, like are you going that soup?

• 29:00Speaker 04

Yeah, like a Yemeni chicken soup.

• 29:02Jessie Ware?

  With the flatbread?

• 29:03Speaker 04

  With the flatbread.

• 29:04Jessie Ware?

  Okay, I like it.

• 29:04Speaker 04

  Buttery as hell, dipped in.

• 29:06Jessie Ware?

I need to make this. Is it lemony?

• 29:08Speaker 04

  No.

• 29:09Jessie Ware?

  It's just Yemeni?

• 29:10Speaker 04

Yeah, it's just Yemeni. It ain't lemony, it's Yemeni.

• 29:13Jessie Ware?

Um okay, so that's your starter.

• 29:14Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 29:15Jessie Ware?

With bits of chicken in it.

• 29:16Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 29:17Jessie Ware?

  So it's almost like stewy.

• 29:18Speaker 04

Falling off the bone, like super, yeah, stewed.

• 29:20Jessie Ware?

I'm really into this, I'm gonna Google doing a s- a soup like that.

• 29:24Speaker 04

  Easy to me.

• 29:24Jessie Ware?

  Is it?

• 29:25Speaker 04

Yeah. I will actually, do you know what, me, when me grandad died, we all like were looking for a recipe and we couldn't find one anywhere, because he wouldn't tell we. And I thought, you've took that to your grave, how dare you? And it was only like two years ago, we finally found the recipe online.

• 29:40Jessie Ware?

  And it's, it's a decent one.

• 29:42Speaker 03

  And what's it called?

• 29:43Speaker 04

And I cried when I, honey. Because you know when a taste takes you back, I'd not had it for years. It's literally just called Yemeni chicken soup. And the bread's called um hubs.

• 29:52Speaker 03

  Hubs?

• 29:53Speaker 04

Yeah, Arab bread. And yeah, it was like, it took us back like to being a little girl, it was amazing. I think it's amazing when food does that actually. You know, it can remind you of a beautiful memory.

• 30:02Speaker 03

  Ask Jessie.

• 30:04Jessie Ware?

  Oh yeah.

• 30:04Speaker 03

Food is her most important thing.

• 30:07Jessie Ware?

  Every European country.

• 30:09Speaker 04

  Exactly.

• 30:10Jessie Ware?

  Okay, so main.

• 30:12Speaker 04

Main is probably a Sunday roast.

• 30:14Jessie Ware?

  And by your mother?

• 30:15Speaker 04

Yeah, because nobody makes it like your mum.

• 30:17Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 30:18Speaker 04

  Don't you think?

• 30:19Speaker 03

  Well, I hope so.

• 30:20Jessie Ware?

Yeah, I mean, I think, yeah, I think my, my husband prefers his mother's.

• 30:24Speaker 04

Like mums just make the best food. I feel like when, when you give birth, you're given like the superpower of like. Best cook, best shoulder to cry on.

• 30:33Jessie Ware?

I mean, uh my kids would disagree with you because they'd never fucking eat my food at the moment. It's a lot. Yeah, they eat mums though.

• 30:43Speaker 04

But I think there's like an emotional connection between mothers and food, cause like, I always remember, no matter what would happen, if I'd come in crying from school, me mum would be like, do you want mince and dumplings? And that would be like, oh no.

• 30:55Jessie Ware?

She sounds like my kind of woman.

• 30:56Speaker 04

Do you know what I mean? Like, they just know what to make you.

• 30:57Jessie Ware?

  She solves things through food?

• 30:59Speaker 04

Yes. And it's very much like, you know, when you walk in a northern house, it's like, if you don't get offered a cup of tea, then that's quite rude. So, anything can be solved with a cup of tea.

• 31:09Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 31:09Speaker 03

Is, is your mum a bit like my mum was?

• 31:12Jessie Ware?

  It sounds like.

• 31:13Speaker 03

If you open the fridge door, there's enough to feed at least ten people for two days.

• 31:19Speaker 04

During Covid, I feel like me mum generally thought she was like, gonna be housing socials to feed them for the unforeseeable.

• 31:26Speaker 03

  I'm a bit like that.

• 31:27Speaker 04

And me brother like walks in the house and he always goes in the freezer and picks out what he wants and leaves with it. It's very that.

• 31:33Speaker 03

  Oh god.

• 31:33Speaker 04

We've actually got Arab hubs that me grandad made in me mum's freezer, that were just, that are just there forever. Yeah. And me mum's like, if anyone does touch them and thinks it's like rubbish.

• 31:44Speaker 03

The freezer better not bloody break down.

• 31:46Speaker 04

Do you know what I mean?

• 31:47Speaker 03

So, listen, you, you like Greg's and you like, obviously like a sandwich. What's your best filling?

• 31:54Speaker 04

  Of a sandwich?

• 31:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 31:55Speaker 04

This is a bit weird. So, the first bit's normal, tuna and salad cream with sweet corn with cheese and onion crisps.

• 32:04Speaker 03

  Inside, yeah.

• 32:06Speaker 04

  It's honestly stunning.

• 32:07Jessie Ware?

It's like a tuna melt, but kind of.

• 32:09Speaker 03

  White bread or brown bread?

• 32:11Speaker 04

  White bread.

• 32:12Speaker 03

  White bread.

• 32:13Speaker 04

That is an elite crisp sandwich.

• 32:15Speaker 03

  An elite crisp sandwich.

• 32:17Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 32:17Jessie Ware?

I like, maybe we should make a cookbook of all the elite sandwiches. Um, but Jade's, Jade's coining elite crisp.

• 32:25Speaker 04

  Elite crisp sandwich.

• 32:26Jessie Ware?

  Okay, I like it.

• 32:27Speaker 03

  And what would?

• 32:28Jessie Ware?

  We haven't got.

• 32:29Speaker 03

We haven't got, yeah, and we've got soup, so what's your main, your roast?

• 32:33Speaker 04

  With all the trimmings.

• 32:34Speaker 03

  And then you put.

• 32:35Speaker 04

  Um, lamb and gammon.

• 32:37Jessie Ware?

  You have them together?

• 32:38Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 32:39Jessie Ware?

  Oh, wow, she really does.

• 32:40Speaker 04

  I doubled it.

• 32:41Speaker 03

Oh, I should have, maybe I should have done lamb tonight.

• 32:43Speaker 04

But I love chicken as well, by the way. Yeah, yeah.

• 32:48Speaker 04

  If you're treating yourself.

• 32:49Jessie Ware?

Friday night, yeah, lamb is like, yeah.

• 32:51Speaker 04

Lamb's like what you get with your Christmas dinners.

• 32:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 32:53Speaker 04

  It's a posh occasion.

• 32:54Jessie Ware?

Okay, so, you big pudding fan?

• 32:56Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 32:57Jessie Ware?

  What is your pudding?

• 32:58Speaker 04

  Apple, apple crumbling custard.

• 33:00Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 33:00Speaker 03

  See, I should have done.

• 33:01Speaker 04

Like a school dinner pudding for me.

• 33:03Jessie Ware?

So mum has tried something tonight.

• 33:04Speaker 03

I've never made it before, panna cotta. I've never made it before.

• 33:08Jessie Ware?

But we're a bit worried it hasn't got enough wobble.

• 33:11Speaker 03

What do you mean, we're a bit worried?

• 33:12Jessie Ware?

  You, well, we both are.

• 33:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 33:14Jessie Ware?

  You are and I am.

• 33:15Speaker 03

No, I think I put slightly, so I, I've just been in, in Greece, so we had.

• 33:21Jessie Ware?

Because when, before she was in Bahamas, she was in Greece.

• 33:23Speaker 04

Right, I'm sensing a theme here.

• 33:25Speaker 03

Excuse me, I should be retired, travelling.

• 33:27Speaker 04

What's that woman called, Shirley Temple? Given that.

• 33:31Speaker 03

So, um, I have this Greek yogurt panna cotta, so it's a mixture of cream and Greek yogurt.

• 33:37Speaker 04

  I do love that.

• 33:38Speaker 03

It was so delicious. So I've made panna cotta, Greek yogurt panna cotta with spiced cherries.

• 33:44Jessie Ware?

  Oh, darling.

• 33:46Speaker 03

So, but I don't know how well the panna cotta is.

• 33:49Jessie Ware?

But it's still gonna taste creamy, innit?

• 33:50Speaker 03

  It will taste nice.

• 33:51Speaker 04

It'll still be lovely, I'm sure.

• 33:53Speaker 03

How do you get them out, though, of the mould? I did put the vegetable oil around the thing. I'm sure I have to maybe melt.

• 33:58Jessie Ware?

  I'm sure they'll be, they'll be great.

• 34:00Speaker 03

  Pascal said.

• 34:01Speaker 04

Have you ever had a northern cornflake tart?

• 34:04Speaker 03

Yes, with treacle. Oh, you've had it with jam, I've had it with treacle.

• 34:09Speaker 04

  The cornflakes are in treacle.

• 34:10Speaker 03

A treacle and you put the cre, the cornflakes on the top. Delicious.

• 34:15Jessie Ware?

And a drink of choice, is it gonna be Malibu?

• 34:17Speaker 04

Yeah, probably Malibu and just a normal cup of tea, actually. If I was, if it was my last meal.

• 34:22Jessie Ware?

  Said a cup of tea?

• 34:23Speaker 04

Yeah, if it's my last one, I wanna go out with the best cup of tea I've ever had.

• 34:28Jessie Ware?

  Do you have sugar?

• 34:29Speaker 04

No. Oat milk as well now, I've, I've crossed over because of Jordan, Jordan's super healthy. And gradually he's trying to make me healthier.

• 34:37Jessie Ware?

So, okay, how, how is that, how was that when you, you, you live together, right?

• 34:42Speaker 04

Uh, kind of, yeah, pretty much.

• 34:44Jessie Ware?

But like, how does it work? Like, when you're trying to really impress Jordan with a meal?

• 34:49Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 34:50Jessie Ware?

  What would impress Jordan?

• 34:52Speaker 04

He loves, he likes healthy food, so I can make him a good, like, roast chicken moment with nice herbs.

• 34:58Jessie Ware?

  But does he eat chicken?

• 34:59Speaker 04

Yeah, he'll eat chicken. He doesn't like chickens, he doesn't mind, but the reason why he doesn't have red meat is because he likes cows and pigs.

• 35:06Jessie Ware?

Oh, he didn't like, okay, got it.

• 35:08Speaker 04

Yeah, I don't ask, I've I've had this, I've had this conversation as well. But yeah, chicken is fine.

• 35:14Jessie Ware?

  Fine.

• 35:15Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 35:15Jessie Ware?

So you do chicken, okay, fine. And is he a good cook?

• 35:18Speaker 04

Yeah, he's quite good. I think he's like, Jordan's a type of person where you can like, throw something together and it's great.

• 35:25Jessie Ware?

  Rassle it up.

• 35:26Speaker 04

Do you know what I mean, he's one of them.

• 35:26Speaker 03

But where's he, where where's his family? Are they in London?

• 35:30Speaker 04

  Yeah, so he's.

• 35:31Jessie Ware?

Was he Brighton, or did I make that up?

• 35:32Speaker 04

He lived in Brighton for a bit, yeah. So he was born in London. I think he lived in Brighton through all his teenage years and that's how he ended up with being friends with Harley and Rizzle Kicks and all that. And then, and now he lives in Margate.

• 35:44Jessie Ware?

Oh, wow, wow, do you think it's trendy?

• 35:47Speaker 04

Yeah, do you know what, he bought that house years ago before, it was cool as well.

• 35:51Speaker 03

Do you go down there? Do you like Margate?

• 35:53Speaker 04

I do, it reminds me of home, actually, because it's a little seaside town. Um, yeah, it's really, it's really beautiful, actually. And it's nice for me to have best of both worlds, you know, so I work in London, I've got a flat in London. But it's nice to escape to Margate.

• 36:08Jessie Ware?

There's good food in Margate, too.

• 36:09Speaker 04

Yeah, it's definitely getting a bit bougier as well. They do really good fish and chips.

• 36:13Jessie Ware?

  Oh, do they?

• 36:14Speaker 04

I love how put bougie and fish and chips together.

• 36:16Jessie Ware?

Yeah, no, but no, but like, I mean, a seaside town should do a good fish and chips.

• 36:20Speaker 04

But they've got, you know, really nice trendy like coffee shops now that do like, you know, sourdough bread everywhere.

• 36:27Speaker 03

Do you know, every time you blink, I see a little sparkle. Yeah, it's this light and there's sparkles on there.

• 36:33Speaker 04

Probably a bit of glitter left from the shoot.

• 36:34Speaker 03

  I think I want glitter.

• 36:36Jessie Ware?

  For your birthday.

• 36:36Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 36:37Speaker 04

You can never go wrong with glitter.

• 36:38Speaker 03

  No.

• 36:39Speaker 04

But be warned, you'll never escape it.

• 36:41Speaker 03

Diana Ross song of everything, which would you put, when you're dressed up, which would you do your karaoke to?

• 36:48Speaker 04

  I love Chain Reaction.

• 36:49Speaker 03

  Oh, it's not bad.

• 36:51Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 36:51Speaker 04

Upside Down's up there for me as well. And then my.

• 36:54Jessie Ware?

  I'm coming out, no?

• 36:55Speaker 04

Oh, surely, yeah. But mine and my mum's song is When You Tell Me That You Love Me, the ballad. When you tell me that you love me. Yeah.

• 37:05Speaker 03

  But you don't do little.

• 37:06Jessie Ware?

Do you do, do, um, do you sing it together?

• 37:08Speaker 04

When I was little, we used to sing it to each other, yeah.

• 37:11Jessie Ware?

  Can your mum sing?

• 37:13Speaker 04

  No, not really.

• 37:14Jessie Ware?

Was that not a giveaway with the old Diana Ross?

• 37:17Speaker 04

Not at that age, because she just said she was going out to sing.

• 37:20Jessie Ware?

  I love your mum.

• 37:22Speaker 03

Little Mix concerts, you've not done Reach Out and Touch Someone.

• 37:25Speaker 04

  I wish.

• 37:26Speaker 03

And then everyone, I went to a concert and we all had to do it. And I hate, and actually.

• 37:31Speaker 04

  Oh, no, you hate it?

• 37:32Speaker 03

Yeah, Reach Out and Touch Someone.

• 37:33Jessie Ware?

That's probably the cheesiest one, to be fair. She didn't want to touch the stranger. I'm starving, I'm feeling a bit pissed, mum.

• 37:39Speaker 03

  Sorry, Tommy, it's coming.

• 37:40Speaker 04

Me too, actually, I've not eaten much today.

• 37:42Jessie Ware?

  No, god.

• 37:43Speaker 03

  It's almost ready.

• 37:44Speaker 04

This'll sort you out, don't worry.

• 37:46Jessie Ware?

Yeah, absolutely, don't worry, we'll all be schluffing and watching like, you know, telly.

• 37:50Speaker 03

I'm just going to make the gravy.

• 37:52Jessie Ware?

  Oh, okay.

• 37:53Speaker 03

And I'm going to put the, the things over here in the microwave, and then they're ready.

• 37:57Speaker 04

Is your mum always this glamorous?

• 37:59Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 38:00Speaker 03

  Oh, god.

• 38:00Speaker 04

  I love it.

• 38:01Jessie Ware?

Yes, yes, she, I mean, have you got the red lip on? Ish.

• 38:06Speaker 04

  Of course.

• 38:06Speaker 03

It's come off because I'm drinking.

• 38:08Jessie Ware?

You need to reapply. No, she's always, always glamorous. And I did not learn that, because I'm lazy, and like, my hair's still wet, because I, you know, washed it.

• 38:18Speaker 04

I know, but for, for me, I like, I'm very all or nothing. It's either very, very natural, or it's super glam, drag bean vibes, and that's what I like.

• 39:38Speaker 01

  You.

• 39:42Speaker 03

  Jake, how many potatoes, darling?

• 39:44Speaker 04

Oh, how long is a piece of string?

• 39:47Speaker 03

  Two, four, three.

• 39:48Speaker 04

  Three, please.

• 39:49Jessie Ware?

  Yes, girl.

• 39:50Speaker 04

  I love a potato.

• 39:52Jessie Ware?

That's a gravy for you, my love.

• 39:56Speaker 04

Oh, this looks absolutely stunning. I'm thrilled. This is so lovely, thank you.

• 40:00Jessie Ware?

  Is it?

• 40:01Speaker 04

Yeah, just what I needed after a long day away.

• 40:05Jessie Ware?

So, where would be your first point of call, apart from Greg's? When you get to South Shields, where do you go, apart from your mother's house? What would be the first point of call for food? Is there one place that you absolutely adore?

• 40:19Speaker 04

So, there's a famous road in South Shields called Ocean Road.

• 40:23Jessie Ware?

  Sounds fabulous.

• 40:24Speaker 04

It sounds very exotic. It sounds like LA.

• 40:28Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, Malibu.

• 40:29Speaker 04

It's got like, it's a road basically full of curry houses.

• 40:32Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 40:32Speaker 04

Oh. And they're usually open like through the night, so you can have a night out and then go and have a curry after.

• 40:37Jessie Ware?

  Would you do that?

• 40:38Speaker 04

Absolutely. I mean, your belly won't thank you the next day, but... What's your best curry? Again, plain Jane.

• 40:44Speaker 03

  Just chicken?

• 40:45Speaker 04

It's like a chicken tikka masala situation, do you know what I mean?

• 40:48Jessie Ware?

Which naan do you go for? Pesciari?

• 40:50Speaker 04

  Not even that, hon.

• 40:51Jessie Ware?

  Butter?

• 40:52Speaker 04

  Yeah, or a parata.

• 40:53Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 40:54Speaker 04

But I also, there's a place in South Shields called Coleman's Fish and Chips. It's like voted the country's best fish and chips.

• 41:01Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 41:02Speaker 04

Yeah, it's the best. And that's what I always go there. Cod and chips, obviously.

• 41:08Jessie Ware?

  No, but you wouldn't go...

• 41:09Speaker 04

  It's a theme here.

• 41:10Jessie Ware?

No, Sam, Sam Smith's is a battered sausage. Actually, Sam Smith's is the whole fucking menu, but...

• 41:15Speaker 04

Yeah, I mean, they also do like mushy pea fritters, so it's basically like battered mushy peas.

• 41:20Jessie Ware?

  Fancy. That sounds amazing.

• 41:22Speaker 04

  Yeah, it's so good.

• 41:23Jessie Ware?

  This sounds great.

• 41:24Speaker 04

They're, yeah, phenomenal. And that's like one of their things that they do that they're quite famous for.

• 41:29Jessie Ware?

Where do you eat in Teneri Wolf?

• 41:32Speaker 04

They've actually got a lovely Indian place called Chai Ki.

• 41:34Jessie Ware?

  I don't know it.

• 41:35Speaker 04

It's kind of like Dushun. You meet in Dushun.

• 41:37Jessie Ware?

  We love Dushun, yeah.

• 41:38Speaker 04

Yeah, it's very similar to Dushun. What else have they got there? They've got a rocker there. It's quite nice.

• 41:43Jessie Ware?

  I've never been to Rocker.

• 41:44Speaker 04

  It's lovely.

• 41:46Jessie Ware?

Oh, they've got like posh places?

• 41:48Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 41:48Jessie Ware?

  Of course they do.

• 41:49Speaker 04

They've got like Shake Shack and stuff as well, but they've got lovely restaurants.

• 41:52Jessie Ware?

I've never had a Shake Shack either. Is it good?

• 41:55Speaker 04

Yes, good. I prefer In-N-Out. Have you had In-N-Out before?

• 41:58Jessie Ware?

  Yes, I have.

• 41:58Speaker 04

It's clean, isn't it? Yeah, it's like, it's like, obviously not great for you, but it feels fresh. Fresher than like a Matty D's, isn't it?

• 42:06Jessie Ware?

Now... You know, we've nearly asked you all the food questions that we asked. But I do need to know what your lunchbox was when you were little.

• 42:14Speaker 03

  What was on the front?

• 42:15Jessie Ware?

  Were you school dinners?

• 42:16Speaker 04

What was me, probably Groovy Chick was the box.

• 42:20Speaker 03

  What's Groovy?

• 42:20Speaker 04

She wore like bell bottom. Bang on the door.

• 42:23Speaker 03

She, she like had, she was blonde.

• 42:26Jessie Ware?

How do you know this mum?

• 42:28Speaker 03

I don't know, and she had like bell bottoms.

• 42:30Jessie Ware?

  Googling it.

• 42:31Speaker 04

You'll know when you say her. She was an absolute hun.

• 42:35Jessie Ware?

  Who is she?

• 42:37Speaker 03

They did like a whole like um birthday cards with her on and loads of things.

• 42:41Speaker 04

Groovy Chick Lava Land. Remember her?

• 42:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 42:45Jessie Ware?

I do. You are younger than me Jade, so that is really showing that.

• 42:51Speaker 04

So yeah, I had a Groovy Chick lunchbox and then inside it there would usually be a cheese string.

• 42:57Jessie Ware?

I've tried them on my kids and they like it.

• 43:00Speaker 04

It's more because it's funny, peel the bits and it's like you make a little wig.

• 43:02Jessie Ware?

Yeah, so you have your cheese string and then what would be your, oh yeah, would you have the sandwich filling of the tuna mayo and cheese and onion?

• 43:10Speaker 04

I hadn't discovered that beautiful recipe until a later age. So it would be like ham or something very basic, you know, tuna.

• 43:20Jessie Ware?

Now, I, I want to talk to you about songwriting because I know that you and Leanne were kind of the, I remember when I was doing my own sessions, it would be like, I'd be working with people that were working with you. Camille, who we love.

• 43:31Speaker 04

  Love Camille.

• 43:32Jessie Ware?

  Yeah. Shun.

• 43:34Speaker 04

  Love Shun.

• 43:35Jessie Ware?

Brilliant, I love her. Um but you and Leanne became kind of the, the main little mixes writers.

• 43:43Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 43:44Jessie Ware?

Was that because you were writing, you were saying that you were writing songs when you were little, weren't you?

• 43:48Speaker 04

Yeah, we've always written, I think Leah has as well. Just enjoy that process.

• 43:51Jessie Ware?

Yeah, but you were working with really brilliant women.

• 43:54Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm.

• 43:55Jessie Ware?

Before lots of people were working with women.

• 43:58Speaker 04

Always very important for us. I think I was always, you know, from the very beginning, that was our message. You know, we looked up the Spice Girls and we felt like it'd been a minute since there was another girl band for like young girls to look up to. So we embodied that in every aspect of our career, with anyone creative. You know, we worked with Camille in the very beginning before she like really took off.

• 44:18Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 44:19Speaker 04

Um Megan Cottone, who we did salute with, she was initially like our vocal coach and then we brought her in because we.

• 44:24Jessie Ware?

  Who's this?

• 44:25Speaker 04

  Megan Cottone.

• 44:26Jessie Ware?

  I don't know her.

• 44:27Speaker 04

You've probably met her before. She, she wrote salute for us, with us. We were pretty girls together actually, which went to pretty Spears. And that was like our first cut with another artist.

• 44:38Jessie Ware?

  Amazing.

• 44:38Speaker 04

  Not a bad one.

• 44:39Jessie Ware?

Would you like to write for more artists?

• 44:41Speaker 04

Love to, yeah. I love it. I've got a few cuts coming out soon, which is like really exciting. Because I think as a girl band member, it took a long time for people to like take me seriously as a songwriter. I think people just assume that you get given songs. Um, so it took a long time to get a publishing deal.

• 44:57Jessie Ware?

  What?

• 44:58Speaker 04

Yeah, me and Lee only got a publishing deal like three years ago and like the ten years have been, yeah.

• 45:04Jessie Ware?

So like which songs were you like presenting when you went to these publishing meetings? I mean, you would have had like.

• 45:10Speaker 04

Every single, basically. Besides like Shout and Black Magic has been written by us.

• 45:15Jessie Ware?

  I do love Black Magic.

• 45:17Speaker 04

Same. Well, Camille's pretty much saved our career with Black Magic. We thought we were gonna get dropped, yeah. So it was the third album. We wrote a whole album and then we decided to scrap it because it wasn't good enough. The label didn't think it was good enough either and it was just like. It was like third album problems, you know. The second album had done good, but we wanted to change it up.

• 45:38Jessie Ware?

Which ones were on the second album?

• 45:39Speaker 04

Uh, so that was the salute era. So it's like salute, move.

• 45:42Jessie Ware?

No, you're not Shout Out To My Axe?

• 45:44Speaker 04

  No.

• 45:45Jessie Ware?

  That was later, wasn't it?

• 45:45Speaker 04

  Yeah, later on.

• 45:46Jessie Ware?

  With Camille, wasn't it?

• 45:47Speaker 04

Yeah. So it was Move on there. What else was the salute album? Little Me. Um, we did the charity single that year, the Word Up cover. And so going into the third album, we felt a lot of pressure. Um, and the la- I feel like the label put a lot of pressure on us as well. And then it got to the point where there was like rumours going around that we were gonna get dropped and we were like shitting ourselves.

• 46:09Jessie Ware?

But, but they hadn't said that you were getting dropped.

• 46:11Speaker 04

They hadn't officially said it, but like.

• 46:12Jessie Ware?

  There was rumours?

• 46:13Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:13Jessie Ware?

Jesus, that's the worst. The idea that you think people that.

• 46:18Speaker 04

I know. I mean, you know, I suppose it's quite hard, isn't it, for those expert artists? So, you know, two albums in already was quite lucky for us.

• 46:24Jessie Ware?

I mean, babe, not lucky. No, you are a great, great group.

• 46:30Speaker 04

No, we are, but it's like, it's just, it's quite hard. Oh, no, if there is any. Don't know if there is or not. Um, sorry, I am the slowest eater in the world.

• 46:41Jessie Ware?

  I'm gonna have seconds.

• 46:42Speaker 04

  Love it.

• 46:43Jessie Ware?

If there's some. Carry on speaking.

• 46:44Speaker 04

  Michelle.

• 46:45Jessie Ware?

  Yes, sir.

• 46:48Speaker 04

And so we sat in a meeting, it was kinda like a, you know, it was a very important meeting and we were thinking, oh god, this is it. And then they said Camille's just sent in a song and we think it's gonna be the game changer and it was Black Magic. And that was that.

• 47:03Jessie Ware?

  Did you love it?

• 47:04Speaker 04

  I didn't at first.

• 47:06Jessie Ware?

What, did it feel too cute?

• 47:08Speaker 04

Well, we'd just done a kinda more R and B album and then Black Magic was like the poppiest we've ever been. Which I didn't necessarily mind, because I do generally love pop music. But I didn't get it at first. It felt a bit cheesy for me.

• 47:22Jessie Ware?

  No, I'm, I mean, I, I freaking love it.

• 47:24Speaker 04

But now, no, now I absolutely love it and the more I listen to it, the more I fell in love with it. And then I was like, okay, I get it. And actually, to be fair to Psycho at the time, they put a lot of money into it. They had so much faith. They flew us out the US. We did a big budget video. And so it was like, oh. Yeah. Thank you. So yeah, it really felt like it was, it was taken off again and that, yeah, it was all thanks to Camille. That was the first time we took a song that wasn't written by us as well. And I think I, I was a bit proud in that moment too. And I had to put my pride aside and be like, no, this is a hit.

• 47:57Jessie Ware?

But that took, that took to album three for you to take a song?

• 48:01Speaker 04

From someone else for a single, yeah.

• 48:03Jessie Ware?

And people just don't realise that?

• 48:04Speaker 04

  Mm-mm.

• 48:05Jessie Ware?

  I didn't realise that. Wow.

• 48:07Speaker 04

Well, I mean, it's just, it's not what people, I think people have. They definitely don't want. Assumptions. Yeah. Of. And I get, I get it, you know, because I suppose history does sort of, but then saying that, people thought about the Space Girls and actually they did write a lot of them easily. Did they? Yeah.

• 48:23Jessie Ware?

I need to ask you Jade, is there one particular scent or smell, you were talking about nostalgia and crying over your, you know, e- eating that Yemeni chicken soup. But no, like, is, is there any other kind of smell that can just take you somewhere? So vividly, like a taste? Sorry, sorry, that was a burp, sorry.

• 48:48Speaker 03

Crikey, it's only a podcast with prose here, darling.

• 48:51Jessie Ware?

  Alright, sorry.

• 48:53Jessie Ware?

But is there a smell or a taste that just kind of can take you back somewhere?

• 48:57Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 48:59Speaker 04

  Um.

• 49:03Speaker 04

  Do you have Dixon's here?

• 49:05Jessie Ware?

  What?

• 49:06Speaker 04

  The. Savaloy shop.

• 49:07Speaker 03

  No.

• 49:08Jessie Ware?

  No, I have.

• 49:08Speaker 04

So up north, there's a um shop called Dixon's. It's kind of similar to Greg's actually. Do you know what a savaloy is?

• 49:15Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 49:16Speaker 04

  Like a savaloy sausage?

• 49:17Jessie Ware?

  Yes, I do.

• 49:17Speaker 04

So you have like a savaloy dip and it comes with peas pudding.

• 49:21Speaker 03

  Oh, nice.

• 49:21Jessie Ware?

  I didn't know about that.

• 49:22Speaker 04

Right, it's quite famous up north. But I I actually can't remember the last time I had one and probably years and years ago, but that smell of that shop. Always reminds me of my grandad again, because bless him, as you can probably tell, I was very close to my grandad. He passed away when I was like thirteen. Um, and, yeah, I feel like it was funny with my grandad because he was very devout Muslim. But he would do anything to please us and I was obsessed with savaloy dips.

• 49:51Speaker 03

  Which are made of pork.

• 49:52Speaker 04

  Which are made of pork.

• 49:53Jessie Ware?

  Shit.

• 49:54Speaker 04

So he would take us to the, af- after school, he would take us to Dixon's for a savaloy dip and he'd wait outside the shop. And all his Muslim friends would walk past him and be like, how dare you? Anything to please his granddaughter. And so that smell always reminds me of that. So maybe savaloy is, and I think. Do you know what I do really miss is like the smell of like a a bakery, but like a family bakery, not one in a supermarket. Because they're a dying breed, aren't they?

• 50:22Jessie Ware?

I've got the best family bakery at like.

• 50:24Speaker 03

  You've got ours, you've got Dan's.

• 50:27Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 50:28Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 50:29Jessie Ware?

You mustn't have one really in Canary Wharf.

• 50:31Speaker 03

  Canary Wharf doesn't have one.

• 50:32Speaker 04

No, and it's like the smell of fresh bread.

• 50:34Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 50:35Jessie Ware?

Wow. We have one last question to ask you.

• 50:37Speaker 03

And then I'm gonna make dessert.

• 50:39Jessie Ware?

  Before we delve into dessert.

• 50:41Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 50:42Jessie Ware?

Um, do you have good table manners, Jade?

• 50:46Speaker 04

I think so. I don't know all the rules, like I'm not good with, there's rules about your knives and forks and that isn't there, but I was never taught that. But I think I do have nice manners.

• 50:55Jessie Ware?

  I think you do.

• 50:56Speaker 04

I say please and thank you. And.

• 50:58Jessie Ware?

Did your mum drill this into you?

• 51:00Speaker 04

Yeah, and I usually do wait before everyone's sat, before I eat, unless I'm given the blessing to eat.

• 51:05Jessie Ware?

I mean, I ordered you, so.

• 51:07Speaker 04

  You did?

• 51:07Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, I did.

• 51:08Speaker 04

  I was forced to eat.

• 51:09Jessie Ware?

You were forced to eat. Um, and what is your worst table manner in somebody else?

• 51:14Speaker 04

Um. People eating with their mouth open like.

• 51:17Speaker 03

God, I think I might have done that.

• 51:19Speaker 04

No, you didn't. I would clock it because it's a thing that I really despise and I would clock it straight away.

• 51:23Jessie Ware?

  The sound?

• 51:24Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 51:25Jessie Ware?

  I can't.

• 51:26Speaker 03

But I usually lately, and I think it's an age thing, I have things drop down my.

• 51:30Jessie Ware?

No, mum, it's been for the last like twenty years, mum. It's a big bosom thing.

• 51:35Speaker 03

Oh, it's in the but my bosom doesn't connect with my mouth to make the stuff drop out.

• 51:40Speaker 04

I'm very flat chested, so maybe if that happens to me, you don't see it because it drops right down, yeah.

• 51:45Speaker 03

Do you end up with it on your lap?

• 51:47Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 51:47Speaker 03

  Okay, so.

• 51:48Speaker 04

  Lack of tits.

• 51:50Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 51:50Speaker 03

Okay, so my man's up here.

• 51:52Jessie Ware?

  Penicillin's on an ironing board.

• 51:55Speaker 04

What is that what you call it?

• 51:57Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 51:58Speaker 04

I've never, I've never heard that one.

• 52:00Jessie Ware?

  Aspirin's on an ironing board.

• 52:01Speaker 04

I've honestly never heard that phrase and it's phenomenal.

• 52:04Jessie Ware?

You're welcome, yeah, aspirin's on an ironing board.

• 52:06Speaker 03

All the boys at her school used to call her that.

• 52:08Speaker 04

  Really?

• 52:09Jessie Ware?

No, fucking Jack used to get the whole coach to sing, ah, flat chest.

• 52:13Speaker 04

No, I used to get bullied for my flat chest.

• 52:16Jessie Ware?

I fucking love it, it's chic.

• 52:18Speaker 04

Oh my god, I love it now, but when I first joined the band, I was convinced I was getting a boob job.

• 52:22Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 52:22Speaker 04

Yeah, because I just wanted to feel more like womanly, which is so ridiculous, and now I love my fashion tits.

• 52:28Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, they're fashion tits.

• 52:29Speaker 04

It's good enough for Kate Moss, do you know what I mean?

• 52:31Jessie Ware?

Exactly, I mean, Kate still has bigger boobs than me, but fuck it, fuck it.

• 52:36Speaker 04

Diana Ross didn't have big boobs.

• 52:37Jessie Ware?

  Didn't she?

• 52:38Speaker 03

  No, she was flat.

• 52:39Speaker 04

Not when she was in the Supremes, I don't know, you know.

• 52:40Speaker 03

She was kind of a very thin neck here, was very thin.

• 52:45Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 52:46Speaker 03

  Hmm.

• 52:46Jessie Ware?

How did you know this about her?

• 52:48Speaker 03

Darling, because she was my era, wasn't she, darling?

• 52:51Speaker 04

  Do you like the Supremes?

• 52:54Speaker 03

  I do, they're not, I, yeah.

• 52:56Jessie Ware?

  Talk about Dreamgirls.

• 52:57Speaker 03

Tamla, of all the Tamla Motowns, they're, they're not my favourite, favourite, but I love Tamla Motown. But I do love all their songs.

• 53:05Jessie Ware?

But like when you saw Dreamgirls, did you think, Diana, you're a bit of a bitch?

• 53:10Speaker 04

A little bit, but I mean.

• 53:11Jessie Ware?

You kind of loved it more.

• 53:12Speaker 04

Yeah, I mean, she could read me a film and I'd love it. I did actually meet Diana Ross.

• 53:17Jessie Ware?

  Oh my god.

• 53:18Speaker 04

It was the best experience ever. I went to see her with me mum in Las Vegas.

• 53:21Jessie Ware?

  Oh wow.

• 53:23Speaker 04

At the Wayne Theatre and then we got to meet her after and she was really lovely.

• 53:27Jessie Ware?

Did she know about this love you had for her?

• 53:29Speaker 04

I think she must have been told that there was like a super.

• 53:31Jessie Ware?

What were you wearing? What were you wearing?

• 53:34Speaker 04

  What was that?

• 53:35Jessie Ware?

  Ball gown.

• 53:35Speaker 04

No, I wore a lovely suit with a glittery vest. I didn't wanna, you know.

• 53:39Jessie Ware?

  You didn't wanna abstate her.

• 53:40Speaker 04

No, darling. And I didn't wanna, you know, look too try hard. Me mum obviously had her best dress. I think she had her favourite jumpsuit on. We did ourselves up and I didn't tell me mum that we were gonna meet her as well. So when we went backstage, me mum was just like, oh, this is lovely this. And then in the morgue, Diana Ross, me mum was just like.

• 53:57Jessie Ware?

  Oh wow.

• 53:58Speaker 04

And I did that really, you'll know this when fans come to you and they like try and get a picture and their phone doesn't work.

• 54:02Jessie Ware?

  Oh no.

• 54:03Speaker 04

I was doing all of that and I was like, oh, look, I dressed up as you and it wasn't Lord and I was like, oh, fuck.

• 54:09Speaker 04

It was just the best, it was the best experience ever. And then like the whole of the rest of the evening, me and my mum were literally just in shock. Like, we've just met Diana Ross.

• 54:17Jessie Ware?

Maybe you should play her in a biopic.

• 54:19Speaker 04

  I'd honestly, I would die.

• 54:22Jessie Ware?

  Maybe you should do that.

• 54:23Speaker 04

I would retire her after that. If I ever did do my own record, I'd, I'd have to have Diana Ross on it somehow. Or I'd love to write a song for Diana Ross. And no, and I tried my best to get involved somehow.

• 54:37Jessie Ware?

  Oh babe, we all did.

• 54:38Speaker 04

  No, I'm not really.

• 54:39Jessie Ware?

Did you get the email being like, Diana's looking for songs?

• 54:41Speaker 04

I didn't even get that far. I wasn't taken seriously enough yet in the songwriting world.

• 54:45Jessie Ware?

I don't understand this. You've written absolute bangers.

• 54:50Speaker 04

I think maybe because we do a lot of co-writes, like, because I do genuinely just love collaborating with people.

• 54:55Jessie Ware?

  Me too.

• 54:56Speaker 04

But sometimes people then see that as like, I don't know, maybe because the way the artist think, oh, well, they probably just like wrote one line and then. Got a cut when it's obviously not that way. But, um. I've got a, I've written Billy Port as new singer.

• 55:10Jessie Ware?

  Shut up.

• 55:11Speaker 04

Yeah, me and Emaneke and Invisible Men, have you worked with them before?

• 55:14Jessie Ware?

No, but I've heard about them.

• 55:16Speaker 04

Um, yeah, we wrote a song.

• 55:18Jessie Ware?

  That's amazing.

• 55:18Speaker 04

I know, and I mean gag at that.

• 55:20Jessie Ware?

Billy, Billy's supposed to be doing it next week, isn't he?

• 55:23Speaker 04

Is he? So he's probably gonna talk about his single.

• 55:25Jessie Ware?

Yeah, well then we can just thank you very much for that piece of info.

• 55:28Speaker 04

Tell him that I love him. I still haven't met him yet.

• 55:30Jessie Ware?

He's put, what? I met him at a fashion thing and he was really fabulous.

• 55:34Speaker 04

Yeah, he's amazing. And actually, that song, which would be good to know for him, actually. I don't think he knows this. So me and Uzo, Emaneke, went in a session together to write for Billy. And I was like, so tell me a bit about Billy, cause he's met him before. I was like, tell him about his personality, so he can get, I feel like I'll write a better song if I know him. And so he was telling us all about Billy and he was like, what he was doing impersonation of when he spoke to him.

• 55:56Jessie Ware?

  That's fine.

• 55:56Speaker 04

And then he was like, oh, he, he was saying to me, like, you know, we've got to let the children know. And I was like, that's the song. And so the song is, gotta let these children know what time it is. And it's all about how he's like been there, done that. But I think lyric is been there, done that, worn that dress, you know, mama knows it best. And, and it's very calm and fabulous.

• 56:17Jessie Ware?

  Did you love Pose?

• 56:19Speaker 04

  Oh, yes.

• 56:21Speaker 03

Will you try a panna cotta?

• 56:22Speaker 04

  Absolutely, of course I will.

• 56:24Jessie Ware?

  I'm excited about this, Mum.

• 56:26Speaker 04

  Me too.

• 56:27Speaker 03

I'm gonna try and get them out the mould.

• 56:29Speaker 04

  Do you need any help?

• 56:30Jessie Ware?

Basically, when you go on, when you see them on MasterChef.

• 56:34Speaker 03

But I don't think mine's gonna wobble. Do you want to pass your plate?

• 56:36Jessie Ware?

So maybe it'll be like a creamy Harry though.

• 56:38Speaker 03

  Piss off.

• 56:39Speaker 04

  Maybe.

• 56:40Jessie Ware?

  Maybe, well that's.

• 56:40Speaker 04

That was honestly, that dinner was gorgeous.

• 56:43Speaker 03

  Good, darling.

• 56:43Speaker 04

  Thank you so much.

• 56:51Jessie Ware?

Got a little bit of a wobble. Oh Mum, yeah.

• 56:53Speaker 04

  It does.

• 56:55Jessie Ware?

  It's wobbling.

• 56:56Speaker 04

It looks lovely. Does it? The presentation's just. Squeezed.

• 57:02Jessie Ware?

  Mum, this is delicious.

• 57:03Speaker 04

It's actually beautiful. Is it? Yeah.

• 57:05Speaker 03

Does it taste of great yogurt?

• 57:06Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 57:07Speaker 04

  It does actually.

• 57:07Jessie Ware?

  Hint of great yogurt, light.

• 57:09Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 57:10Jessie Ware?

Sourness and I'm really getting the spice charries.

• 57:13Speaker 04

  Wow.

• 57:14Speaker 03

No, it is nice. It tastes yoghurt-y and it's not too.

• 57:16Jessie Ware?

Whose recipe is this? Lorraine Pascal?

• 57:19Speaker 03

  Yeah. I changed it slightly.

• 57:22Jessie Ware?

  How did you change it?

• 57:23Speaker 03

I had to change, add some ingredients.

• 57:26Jessie Ware?

  Why?

• 57:26Speaker 03

  I wanted more yogurt.

• 57:27Jessie Ware?

Mum, this is, this is great.

• 57:29Speaker 04

  It's nice and light, actually.

• 57:30Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 57:30Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 57:31Speaker 03

I know what your karaoke song's going to be, but just confirm.

• 57:35Speaker 04

Diana Ross and the Supremes, Baby Love.

• 57:39Jessie Ware?

  Did you know that?

• 57:42Speaker 04

  Baby love.

• 57:43Jessie Ware?

Oh, wow, we're not a little mix.

• 57:44Speaker 04

  What, what here we is?

• 57:46Jessie Ware?

  Wow.

• 57:49Speaker 03

It does start high, doesn't it?

• 57:50Speaker 04

  Ooh. Baby love.

• 57:54Jessie Ware?

  Now we're cooking.

• 57:55Speaker 04

My baby love, I need you, oh how I need you.

• 57:59Jessie Ware?

You're our angel. Okay, but if you were going to do a little mix song on karaoke, what would you do and whose part would you take?

• 58:08Speaker 04

Oh, wow. I feel like Power is a good karaoke song because I feel like with karaoke as well, you want a big sing sometimes.

• 58:15Speaker 03

  Yeah, you've got to sing.

• 58:16Jessie Ware?

It's a power. Yeah, okay, which bit would you do?

• 58:20Speaker 04

I mean, I'd attempt Perry's, but probably not very well. She's, Perry's got the range. Leah's too, to be fair, but lord knows I'm an auto.

• 58:27Jessie Ware?

  Are you?

• 58:28Speaker 04

Well, I'll belt if I have to, but it's an effort, you know?

• 58:31Speaker 03

  Are you the blender?

• 58:32Speaker 04

Yeah, I love a harmony. I'm the harmony girl and I feel like my head voice is my strong.

• 58:37Jessie Ware?

  I love your head voice.

• 58:38Speaker 04

Thing. Yeah, that's my thing, I think. I can belt, yeah, but I definitely like, if I do it too much until I like, if I do a really high note, I'll feel like I'm going to shit myself. And on that note.

• 59:05Jessie Ware?

I loved hearing about Jade's glamorous mum.

• 59:07Speaker 03

Me too. And all the recipes.

• 59:09Jessie Ware?

  I know.

• 59:10Speaker 03

  Of her Lebanese heritage.

• 59:11Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, didn't she send you?

• 59:12Speaker 03

  Yeah, she sent me recipes.

• 59:14Jessie Ware?

  That's so sweet.

• 59:14Speaker 03

  Handwritten beautifully.

• 59:16Jessie Ware?

And also just love that she could then, then take her mum to meet her icon Diana Ross.

• 59:21Speaker 03

Well, she's a lovely, warm person who I enjoyed meeting so much.

• 59:26Jessie Ware?

And wonderfully funny too. Sparkly, just an open book and I loved the sound of the battered mushy peas. That sounds fantastic. And thank you to Jade for coming on Table Manners all those years back. We'll have to get you and Jordan on, your lovely boyfriend, who we did a brilliant live show with, I think back in 2024.

• 59:47Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 59:47Jessie Ware?

But yeah, we'll have more of Second Helpings for you next week.
