• 0:13Jeff Larson?

  Hello, everybody.

• 0:14Wes Larson?

  Hey, Dr. Nick.

• 0:15Jeff Larson?

Hi, Dr. Nick. This is Tooth and Claw Podcast. We have our bear biologist Wes Larson. He is putting up peace signs, then I'm his younger brother Jeff Larson. And we have our very nice, very loves everyone, Mike Smith with us, Big Mike. Big Mike. Big Mike, what's the word on the street?

• 0:40Mike Smith?

I've done a lot of self evaluating ever, ever since this nice, well, we'll call it nice gate. That's the, you always put gate on to the end of controversies. Yeah, I think you might be on to something, Jeff. I don't think I'm a very nice person.

• 0:53Jeff Larson?

Wrong. I don't think you, I wouldn't go like the other way. Like, I don't think you're like a dick, but it's just like, that's not what I would use to describe.

• 1:01Mike Smith?

Yeah, no, it's just like every time we go out to eat, I always have to like say something to the waiter about how I don't like the food. I have to send it back. Oh, wait, no, that's actually, that's you, isn't it? No, but point taken.

• 1:14Jeff Larson?

I'll tell, oh, I'll tell a waiter if I didn't like my food.

• 1:18Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 1:19Jeff Larson?

I feel like they should know.

• 1:20Mike Smith?

  Normalize.

• 1:21Wes Larson?

Sometimes I respect that, you know, because I will just eat it and just be as quiet as a little mouse. But sometimes I think, I wish I could just do that.

• 1:29Jeff Larson?

Don't ask me if I like my food and I have to just say yes, no matter what.

• 1:34Wes Larson?

  Fair enough.

• 1:34Mike Smith?

Well, it's like your coworker coming into the office to me and like, how you doing? And it's like, well, I'm actually not doing very well, Bob. It's like, no, I just wanted to hear good and then we can pretend like we don't work together anymore again, you know?

• 1:47Jeff Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:47Wes Larson?

I get it. You are paying for that food, though. Yeah. Sure. His hard earned money, Mike.

• 1:53Jeff Larson?

Hey, I like that, I like that approach of flipping it.

• 2:01Wes Larson?

That was pretty good. You got me.

• 2:02Jeff Larson?

Put me down in the muck with you with our listeners.

• 2:06Wes Larson?

I'm the only nice one here.

• 2:07Mike Smith?

If I, if I don't see a Reddit thread about, is Jeff a dick? I'm gonna be real disappointed in our listeners.

• 2:14Jeff Larson?

  Actually mean to service workers.

• 2:18Mike Smith?

Oh my gosh. Can't believe it.

• 2:20Wes Larson?

  How you guys doing?

• 2:21Mike Smith?

  Well.

• 2:22Wes Larson?

  Bob?

• 2:23Mike Smith?

  That's a good question.

• 2:24Wes Larson?

  Yeah. Mike, you look pale.

• 2:25Mike Smith?

I've, I'm, yeah, I'm cosplaying as a ghost. It's Halloween. We're recording on Halloween. It's gonna be after Halloween when you guys hear this, but I felt like I'd get into the.

• 2:33Wes Larson?

  It is Halloween day.

• 2:34Mike Smith?

I don't know what's going on with my face right now. I'm like glowing white.

• 2:38Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 2:38Mike Smith?

  What's going on?

• 2:39Wes Larson?

  Nosferatu? Vampire? We don't know.

• 2:42Mike Smith?

  Whatever.

• 2:42Wes Larson?

You look great though, Mike. Well, we've done a lot of recording this week because we're about to go to Costa Rica. Uh, what animal do you guys want to, what do you want to see the most in Costa Rica? That's like potential, you know?

• 2:54Jeff Larson?

  K- Ketsal for me.

• 2:55Wes Larson?

  A ketsal? Resplendent ketsal?

• 2:57Jeff Larson?

Yeah. Splendid ketsal or I mean a jaguar.

• 3:00Wes Larson?

  Yeah. Mike?

• 3:02Mike Smith?

Give me a list of what we might see down there. I don't really know what's on the table.

• 3:06Wes Larson?

Likely is a lot of birds, some cool amphibians and reptiles. Like, I know you kind of like those red-eyed tree frogs. So I think that's one that we could probably see.

• 3:15Mike Smith?

  That would be sweet.

• 3:16Wes Larson?

The one that I'm kind of hoping for in like a very probable way is a kill build toucan, which is a really cool looking toucan with a bright like yellow and green bill. So that's kind of, I'm, I'm setting my expectations in a reasonable spot because a jaguar or like a puma or something's pretty, pretty unlikely.

• 3:34Jeff Larson?

You said it's the second easiest place to see jaguars.

• 3:38Wes Larson?

Yeah, but like outside of the Pantanal, everywhere's really hard to see jaguars.

• 3:43Jeff Larson?

You said there's more jaguars in mountain lions.

• 3:45Wes Larson?

There are, but they're still really hard to see.

• 3:47Jeff Larson?

  Get your story together, dude.

• 3:49Wes Larson?

And we're not, that we're not, there's one place in Costa Rica where they've gotten pretty good at eating sea turtles. And I think if you spent enough time there, you have decent chance to sing a Jaguar. We're not going there, so.

• 4:00Jeff Larson?

Uh, I'm really excited to see a sloth. Never seen a sloth before.

• 4:04Wes Larson?

  Hopefully we see one. Yeah.

• 4:05Jeff Larson?

  I'm banking on it.

• 4:07Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 4:07Jeff Larson?

  I think it's a given.

• 4:09Wes Larson?

  Okay.

• 4:09Mike Smith?

You ever see that movie Seven?

• 4:11Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 4:11Jeff Larson?

  Yeah.

• 4:12Mike Smith?

That's a bad sloth. You don't wanna see that kinda sloth, in my opinion.

• 4:16Wes Larson?

  Yeah. Just better off.

• 4:18Mike Smith?

  Maybe, I don't know.

• 4:19Wes Larson?

Yeah, it doesn't seem that bad. If you had like a TV and some snacks, sure.

• 4:23Mike Smith?

Maybe if you're like, a detective going around just not having a whole lot of success, like you're not bringing a whole lot of cases or solving anything. If you walk into a room and see sloth, you're like, finally, finally I got something to investigate here, right? You might be a little excited. Or would you still be kinda bummed out?

• 4:40Jeff Larson?

Well, I mean, I, I'm not a detective, so I feel like that doesn't work for me. If you're asking like how I would feel.

• 4:50Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 4:50Jeff Larson?

Oh, if I was just like a different person.

• 4:52Mike Smith?

Yeah, use your imagination a little bit.

• 4:54Wes Larson?

And he just saw a sloth?

• 4:56Jeff Larson?

No, a person like in the movie Seven. Like if I walked into the sloth room in Seven, maybe I'd be excited, I think Mike say.

• 5:06Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 5:06Mike Smith?

  Right.

• 5:07Jeff Larson?

  If I was a detective.

• 5:07Wes Larson?

Those detectives are kinda like, whoa, this is at least pretty interesting.

• 5:10Mike Smith?

Like your supervisor every day, it's like, what are you doing out there, Wes? We need, we need, there's murders happening, you haven't, you haven't solved a case in ten years.

• 5:19Wes Larson?

Yeah, yeah. I mean, it's kinda like as a bear biologist, you know, when, when something kinda messed up happens, it is kind of exciting. So I think.

• 5:26Jeff Larson?

Dude, I'd just put it on X, that Twitter app.

• 5:31Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 5:31Jeff Larson?

And they would solve it for me, dude. Sure.

• 5:34Wes Larson?

Yeah, there's some real detectives on there.

• 5:37Mike Smith?

Yeah, they're real good at getting rid of people.

• 5:38Wes Larson?

They would ask Rock how to do it.

• 5:40Jeff Larson?

  Yeah.

• 5:41Wes Larson?

Uh, well, it is our news episode. We are summing up the news from the last like month and a half. It's been quite a bit, actually. There's been some pretty interesting stories that we got sent a lot. And yeah.

• 5:54Jeff Larson?

Thank you, everyone, for sending us stories.

• 5:57Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 5:57Jeff Larson?

  Thank you to our

• 5:58Wes Larson?

  Very much appreciated.

• 5:59Jeff Larson?

  intern Bryn for organizing them.

• 6:01Wes Larson?

Bryn, you're the best. Y'all got Bryn. Thank you. Yeah. And thank you, Bill, for editing this. Hopefully, if you're not too busy with your other job. You're fired, Bill. Fired. He's not. Uh huh. All right. Anyway, uh, yeah, we've got some interesting stories. I, do you guys mind if I start? I think I'm just gonna lead with the one that we probably got sent the most this month.

• 6:22Jeff Larson?

I mind, but I'll allow it.

• 6:24Wes Larson?

All right, I'll wait then. I don't have to go first, if you mind. He always goes first. It's not worth it to me. It's fine. Yeah. All right. Uh, I do love going first.

• 6:33Jeff Larson?

Well, this is like the server type thing again. You asked.

• 6:37Wes Larson?

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 6:38Jeff Larson?

  You know?

• 6:39Wes Larson?

  That is true.

• 6:39Jeff Larson?

Don't fault me because you asked.

• 6:41Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 6:42Jeff Larson?

Yeah, I'll eat this food. I just want you to discount it 50%.

• 6:47Wes Larson?

  Okay.

• 6:47Jeff Larson?

  That's all I'm saying.

• 6:49Wes Larson?

All right. Well, you'll have to hear this story then, and if it's bad, you can get mad at me for going first. Uh, this is the story of not one, but two black bear attacks that happened over the last two months in a very unexpected place. So unless you were alive in 1892, something happened in Arkansas over the last couple of months that was a first for you, and then it happened again, which is what I just said. Two people in Arkansas were killed in black bear attacks, one in September, and then one the very end of September and early October. They're not totally sure what day it happened. These attacks involve two different bears in two different counties. So in a way, it's kind of like a Night of the Grizzly situation, but a little bit less extreme.

• 7:35Wes Larson?

And we're gonna talk a little bit about why this might have happened. But again, just to reiterate this, this is the first fatal black bear attack since 1892, and two of them happened within a span of a couple of weeks. Yeah. The first one was on September 3rd when Vernon Patton was in Mulberry Mountain, Arkansas, which is a great name. Arkansas, you do such a good job naming things.

• 7:59Jeff Larson?

And when you say that, you mean in Arkansas, right? I don't think you said that.

• 8:04Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 8:04Jeff Larson?

The first fatal black bear attack in Arkansas.

• 8:07Wes Larson?

I think I said that, but I could, I could be wrong.

• 8:10Jeff Larson?

I think people probably inferred it, but I just wanted to make sure it's clear.

• 8:14Mike Smith?

Okay. Play it back, Bill. See who's right, who's wrong.

• 8:19Speaker 03

So unless you were alive in 1892, something happened in Arkansas over the last couple of months that was a first for you. And then it happened again, which is what I just said, two people in Arkansas were killed in black bear attacks.

• 8:30Mike Smith?

Put a little Price is Right tuba noise.

• 8:33Wes Larson?

Thanks, Bill. You're, you're hired again. Yeah, if I'm wrong, please do the

• 8:42Wes Larson?

Well, that was good. That was really good.

• 8:44Mike Smith?

  Thanks. I've been practicing.

• 8:46Wes Larson?

All right. So Vernon Patton's in Mulberry Mountain, Arkansas. He's spreading some gravel near his residence. This is a 72-year-old man and a 70-pound subadult black bear emerged from the nearby woods and attacked him. Jeff, do you remember, there was a point in our study where we, we had put out some spring traps. We caught a bear in a snare and rather than fully sedate it, we just half sedated it and released it from the snare by hand and kind of moved it in our arms. Do you remember that?

• 9:17Jeff Larson?

  Yes, sir.

• 9:18Wes Larson?

With Clint? That bear was about 70 pounds when we did that. So this isn't like a huge bear by any means. This is a pretty small black bear.

• 9:27Jeff Larson?

  Not tiny though either.

• 9:28Wes Larson?

Not tiny and definitely still capable of a lot as what we're about to learn. So his adult son, Vernon's adult son was coming by to check on his dad. And he found him actually being actively attacked by this bear, uh, which has got to just be an absolutely horrific thing to stumble on. Uh, he gets out of his car or whatever he was in to come check on his dad. He throws rocks at the bear and as he's doing this, this bear actually charges him as well. Which again, for such a small bear, that's, it's pretty weird behavior. Uh, and then it runs off into the woods. Not long after they would, they would have emergency personnel and law enforcement officials and wildlife officials come. They saw the bear. They managed to get it up a tree and they shot it in the tree. So very confident they got the right one.

• 10:13Wes Larson?

Patton had extensive wounds to his head, his arms. He was airlifted to a regional hospital where doctors immediately operated on him, did their best to save his life. He spent roughly 10 days in the hospital, but unfortunately, ultimately his injuries were too severe for him to recover from, and he did die in the hospital. His family's obviously still grieving this just happened and mourning the loss of their partner, their dad and their grandfather. So this was really traumatic for them and for the state of Arkansas as a whole. This was like unprecedented, you know, to hear about a black bear killing someone. And the Ozarks in Arkansas are pretty good black bear habitat. From my research, there's probably around 5,000 black bears in Arkansas.

• 10:58Wes Larson?

Most of them are in the Ozarks. So this isn't uncommon to see black bears there, but they just hadn't had any big issues. So everyone's kind of struggling to make sense of this. And then lightning strikes again in early October. A 60-year-old man named Max Thomas was camping alone in the popular Sam's Throne Campground in north central Arkansas when he failed to return home and his concerned family called authorities in the area. And a sheriff's deputy went to the empty campsite. And when he got there, he noticed signs of a struggle. He followed those signs into the brush nearby this campsite. And right there, he found the body of the man not far from the campsite. And he said there were signs of a large carnivore attack and subsequent feeding.

• 11:43Wes Larson?

So authorities learned that he had texted a photo of a bear to his family on the morning of September 30th while he was camping. So they pretty much immediately assumed that this had been a bear attack. Can you guys guess what other animals would maybe be in play in Arkansas?

• 11:58Jeff Larson?

  Mountain lion?

• 11:59Wes Larson?

So that's a, that's a good one. That was where my mind went first too, but. Really Arkansas only has like the occasional transient mountain lion that passes through. They don't have a breeding population, but they have been spotted there, especially recently. So it could have been coyotes. The other one I thought of Mike. Do you have any others?

• 12:18Mike Smith?

I was just gonna guess some canine canine like wolf coyote. Yeah.

• 12:22Wes Larson?

Yeah. Honestly, like not a Jaguar, but outside of uh if one escaped from a zoo or something.

• 12:30Jeff Larson?

Well, you know, coming in from Mexico.

• 12:32Wes Larson?

Yeah, but not all the way up to Arkansas Jim.

• 12:34Jeff Larson?

  Maybe.

• 12:35Wes Larson?

The other thing that I thought it could have been is just a dog, you know, a feral dog. Um, unfortunately, like you guys have probably run into this too. When we're doing these news episodes and I start searching for animal attack stories. It's like 75% dog attack stories and the rest are wild animals. There's a lot of dogs out there. So they do think this was a bear though, based on the fact that he'd been fed on that he had sent this photo. And then subsequent analysis of of his remains confirmed that hypothesis. So a hunt was conducted.

• 13:08Jeff Larson?

Text anything with the photo like, what if this thing just kills me?

• 13:13Wes Larson?

I don't think so. Yeah. Yeah. I don't think he said anything like that, but um, that would be pretty crazy if he had. That's for sure. A hunt was conducted for the responsible bear and a male black bear was killed. Based on the photo, they'd seen a large male bear. They killed a large male bear on October 6th. But a DNA and you know what? This is, it's not funny, but it's interesting. As I was reading this, I thought there's a very good chance they didn't get the right bear. They actually did an analysis and realized that this was probably not the right bear based on DNA. Yeah. Um, so it's probably still a large.

• 13:48Mike Smith?

I think you ought to keep these bears alive and interrogate them is how I would do this.

• 13:53Wes Larson?

A bear line up and call someone in.

• 13:55Jeff Larson?

Yeah, that's why I like the death penalty, especially so quick.

• 14:00Wes Larson?

  Yeah, right.

• 14:01Jeff Larson?

  You know?

• 14:02Wes Larson?

  I do. Yeah.

• 14:03Jeff Larson?

  Green mile.

• 14:04Mike Smith?

  Bears are people too.

• 14:05Wes Larson?

  I think, I think.

• 14:06Jeff Larson?

The guy in the green mile didn't do it.

• 14:08Wes Larson?

  This is a very

• 14:08Jeff Larson?

  Trying to help.

• 14:09Wes Larson?

This is a bear you should remove from the population without a doubt. We've talked about this a lot on the show, but not only is there a chance that someone else is going to get hurt, but it's a big liability for the state because if they leave it. And people know they left it and someone else does get hurt. There's a lot of legal precedent to sue and that costs the wildlife agencies a lot of money that they could be putting into much better things.

This episode is brought to you by Hollow Socks. I've been traveling a lot over the past couple of years. And you know what I've started to think is the most critical article of clothing for that? I think it might actually be the socks. Just think about it. A day or two of flying on the plane, those socks are getting nice and sweaty and crispy. And then you have to travel around with them for the rest of the trip, figuring out how to keep them separated, keep everything else from smelling weird and bad. And honestly, I'm convinced now that I was getting what I was paying for. I was buying cheap socks in bulk and they were just not built for the task. And I think that's probably true for a lot of other people, too. We're well To spend all this money on perfect new hiking boots or a new backpack. But do you know what's going to make traveling so much more comfortable? And it's going to be a way cheaper solution. That's where hollow socks come in.

• 16:44Mike Smith?

These are alpaca socks that are built for the field. They're performance grade and made from ultra soft baby alpaca fibers. • 17:41Wes Larson?

So hopefully they find this bear and they're able to remove it. Just a quick reminder, so I looked into some, some data just as a refresher. There's been over 70 fatal black bear attacks in North America since 1900. I'd guess the real number is probably close to 100 or higher than 100, but a lot of those early 1900s numbers didn't really get reported. But I think it's important to say, I could not find a single record of someone being killed by a black bear when they had bear spray with them. So I think the lesson here is that even though these kind of fatal attacks are very rare, black bears are more than capable of killing a human, even a small black bear like that 70 pounder. And they're really opportunistic animals.

• 18:24Wes Larson?

So if you're camping or recreating in black bear country, just makes a lot of sense for you to have your way out of a negative encounter. So deterrent, make sure you're doing good food storage. I think. Part of the problem, people, just to kind of wrap this up, I think people are going to say, why did these both happen at the same time? I kind of just think it was a coincidence. Uh, there could have been like a natural crop that failed or something. Maybe these bears were really hungry. But I do think in these states where they've gone so long without any problems, people have gotten a little complacent often and they kind of don't think that their bears are as dangerous. And maybe aren't as educated about the dangers and about deterrent and about food storage and all of that.

• 19:09Wes Larson?

So it could just be that that was a terrible coincidence that there was two at once.

• 19:13Mike Smith?

  Yeah, that's awful.

• 19:14Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 19:14Jeff Larson?

  Yeah.

• 19:15Mike Smith?

  Tough.

• 19:16Jeff Larson?

You don't really think Arkansas for animal attacks normally.

• 19:20Wes Larson?

You sure don't. Yeah, they got some gators there, but not in this part of the state.

• 19:25Mike Smith?

Bill Clinton was born there, I think. That's what I think about.

• 19:28Jeff Larson?

  Razorbacks.

• 19:30Mike Smith?

And then that gets you thinking about, uh, Monica Lewinsky.

• 19:33Wes Larson?

  That does.

• 19:34Mike Smith?

You just get going down a weird path if you start thinking about Arkansas too much.

• 19:39Jeff Larson?

  Blue dresses.

• 19:39Wes Larson?

  You sure do. Yeah.

• 19:41Mike Smith?

I have a question and it's not that, just out of curiosity and it's not like I feel like anything should or anyone should be held accountable for this, but is there any system in place that holds organizations or people accountable for maybe getting the wrong bear in a scenario like this? Or not? Is that just kind of like part of the, it goes with the territory kind of thing?

• 20:01Wes Larson?

Yeah, it, it's like again, where they're not an animal that's threatened or that like really needs an extra level of protection. They don't like, like in Yellowstone, for example, if we had had a grizzly bear maul someone or something and we caught a grizzly bear that we thought might be responsible. Um, I, this didn't happen to me while I was there, but I know their, their precedent is they would actually test the bear in a trap, like get a DNA sample, have the bear in like a holding facility, test it. And if it wasn't the responsible bear, they would re-release it into the wild.

• 20:36Mike Smith?

  Okay.

• 20:37Wes Larson?

They wouldn't kill it until they knew, but with a black bear, I think they can be a little bit more fast and loose. And sometimes, and this is unfortunate for the animals, but sometimes people just need to hear that something is being done, you know?

• 20:49Mike Smith?

And when they hear that a bear was killed, it's gonna give them some peace of mind.

• 20:53Jeff Larson?

I'm very nice to my servers. I need to get that out. I don't think I said that. There's been a few times where I've got the wrong order or like a very bad thing where I've told them, but I wasn't like ma- mad. I just let them know.

• 21:09Mike Smith?

Oh, you were slamming your fist on the table.

• 21:11Jeff Larson?

  But hey.

• 21:13Mike Smith?

I'm the only one for allegations.

• 21:15Jeff Larson?

Yeah, we'll find one for you.

• 21:17Mike Smith?

Yeah, we'll get you. We'll stick you with something.

• 21:19Jeff Larson?

I can go next unless you want to, Mike.

• 21:22Mike Smith?

I'll go next, actually. Are you sure you want to ask? Because I... No, you go for it, Jeff. I nominate Jeff and not Wes.

• 21:29Jeff Larson?

Okay. So this one, I'm actually, I'm gonna do two because this first one, I think it might end up being better as a future main episode. It's a little fresh right now. But I just think it's a good, I li- I like when Wes does grizzly bear like bear spray versus gun type stories, and I think this would work well with that. But a man in British Columbia had a really bad encounter with a grizzly bear as he, while he was hunting on October 7th. And he's a 63-year-old named Joe Pendry, and he was out hunting. A grizzly bear charged him.

• 22:08Jeff Larson?

He shot it in the leg and the bear still mauled him, had his head in its mouth, got him pretty bad. And he was kind of a inspirational story of his recovery, but, or recovery, but then he ended up passing away a couple of days ago. From a blood clot. So, uh, but like I said, I do think we'll probably want to talk about this one more. Uh, future date. He's a boxer too, and he broke his hand punching the bear.

• 22:36Mike Smith?

  No, that's...

• 22:36Jeff Larson?

A few times. Yeah. But anyways, we, I think, I just think it's a good one to revisit later on when it's not so fresh. With like more detail. Okay.

• 22:48Mike Smith?

Was that blood clot? I know, I, again, we're gonna be talking about this maybe. Was the blood clot caused by, was that a byproduct of the bear?

• 22:55Jeff Larson?

It was like... He had to have so many surgeries from the bear encounter.

• 23:00Mike Smith?

  Oh, okay.

• 23:01Jeff Larson?

  He got blood clot, yeah.

• 23:02Mike Smith?

Maybe that's, so my mom died from a pulmonary embolism. Maybe it was a bear? It could depend. We're not ruling anything out with her. It was like a, well, yeah, I don't want to speculate too much out of respect for her. It's Halloween. We could get a Ouija board and ask her.

• 23:17Jeff Larson?

Was maybe from a surgery she had or something?

• 23:20Mike Smith?

Yeah, like post-surgical complications, so. Yeah.

• 23:23Jeff Larson?

  Yeah.

• 23:24Mike Smith?

I don't know what that first surgery was a result of. Yeah, was she mauled by a bear before that? I'll ask. Yeah. I'm gonna start asking around. Yeah, we are detectives.

• 23:34Jeff Larson?

This next story, I can confidently say was just one big ol' misunderstanding.

• 23:41Mike Smith?

  Okay, alright, can't wait.

• 23:43Jeff Larson?

So, in Portland, Oregon, a nine-year-old child on October 30th, this came out, but it was like a week before that, so in the October 20th, he was playing with his three-year-old brother in their yard, just like in their yard, playing hide and seek, right?

• 23:59Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 23:59Jeff Larson?

So, when you're playing hide and seek, normally there's a safe zone, right? Even it, when they find you, you can run to the safe zone and then you win. You guys play it that way?

• 24:09Mike Smith?

I never, that's a new rule set for me.

• 24:11Jeff Larson?

That's how I always played it.

• 24:13Mike Smith?

  Okay.

• 24:14Jeff Larson?

The person who's seeking looks for you and they have to tag you before you get to like the safe zone, which is where they start.

• 24:21Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 24:21Jeff Larson?

So, I can only assume this coyote played by my same rules. Because this coyote saw the two children playing hide and seek in the yard and he found one of them and started chasing them and I mean, coyotes can't really touch with their arms very well, so he bites him on the foot.

• 24:43Mike Smith?

  Right.

• 24:44Jeff Larson?

Right? And, uh, you know, coyotes, they got pretty sharp teeth, so this nine-year-old had to go to hospital, get his foot checked out. And this coyote, I think, won the game of hide and seek still, but that's coyote's be wildin' for this week.

• 25:00Mike Smith?

Do we know where the three-year-old is yet? He might still be hiding. In that case, I'd say he won.

• 25:06Jeff Larson?

That's true. The coyote has to get balls of him.

• 25:09Mike Smith?

Yeah, exactly. Right. It's kind of embarrassing that your little three-year-old brother had a better hiding spot than you. If a coyote finds you, found you and not him, right?

• 25:19Jeff Larson?

Unless like the three-year-old was seeking.

• 25:22Wes Larson?

They are good. They're really good at hiding in tiny spaces. I just played hide and seek with my three-year-old niece. And she was like fitting and stuff for us. Just like, oh my gosh, I can't believe she was doing that. So they're pretty good at hiding, actually.

• 25:37Mike Smith?

That's true. Yeah. I rescind my previous statement.

• 25:41Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 25:41Jeff Larson?

These kids didn't even know there's a coyote playing until it bit one of their feet.

• 25:46Mike Smith?

  That's such a good strategy.

• 25:49Jeff Larson?

So yeah, I think, you know, he saw the coyote saw the kids playing and just thought it was fun.

• 25:56Mike Smith?

Yeah, sure. Get in on that.

• 25:58Jeff Larson?

  I can confidently say that.

• 26:02Wes Larson?

I don't know if you can, but.

• 26:04Jeff Larson?

I think, growing up, we played hide and seek like too many times.

• 26:10Mike Smith?

We played a lot in the dark is where we.

• 26:12Jeff Larson?

We didn't have like a big house and we only played in the basement and there's just like eight spots that you chose from every single round.

• 26:21Wes Larson?

But we would also like block out any source of light. So it was just pitch black. And then we would just like run into each other and stuff.

• 26:31Jeff Larson?

There's times I would just like lay on the floor, like out in the open, but it's so dark.

• 26:36Wes Larson?

Yeah. And that is how we played, huh? If you got to the stairs, you were safe.

• 26:41Jeff Larson?

Yeah. So I always tried to hide close to the stairs.

• 26:44Wes Larson?

That's right. And if everyone got there, then the person had to count again.

• 26:47Jeff Larson?

  Yeah.

• 26:48Wes Larson?

Yeah. That is a fun way to play.

• 26:50Mike Smith?

Nice. We should play that next time we go up to your parents.

• 26:53Wes Larson?

  With the coyote.

• 26:55Mike Smith?

  With the.

• 26:55Wes Larson?

We have to go to our old house.

• 26:56Mike Smith?

The, yeah, formally, you are invited, coyote. Just putting that out there in case he's listening. I'll go. I'm not gonna ask. I'm going.

• 27:05Wes Larson?

  Okay.

• 27:06Mike Smith?

So this happened September 23rd is when this was reported through ABC News, plus several other sources. But it's looking bad in California, guys. You heard about this? Hmm, no.

• 27:17Wes Larson?

  The sea lion?

• 27:18Mike Smith?

The venomous snake bite thing, the dog training? Oh, if only. That'd be so much better than this. Well, have you seen San Andreas? Things can go real bad for California at any moment.

• 27:30Mike Smith?

Paul Giamatti really just giving his best, you know, like not, not a movie that deserves his talents, but he gave it his best. I can't.

• 27:38Wes Larson?

The only, the only reason I watched that movie is because I saw Carlo Gugino's in it and I was like, I gotta watch this. Yeah.

• 27:46Mike Smith?

Well, it's not a venomous snake. It's not anything like that. It's a squirrel that's been reported as having attacked at least five people in the Bay Area over the past few weeks.

• 27:57Wes Larson?

  Wow.

• 27:57Mike Smith?

And it's been biting and scratching some of these people so badly, at least two of them have had to go to the emergency room. Which is pretty crazy. It's crazy, but also like, if you think about, you know, if you get attacked by a wild animal, you're probably gonna wanna go get it checked out by somebody. But yeah, the squirrel is getting in some pretty good, doing some good damage to some of these people. So one of these victims.

• 28:20Wes Larson?

Not gonna rule out hide and seek in this story either.

• 28:24Mike Smith?

Squirrel could be real good at hiding, right? Could be really good at hide and seek. I mean, it's been training its whole life, hiding those nuts.

• 28:31Wes Larson?

  You out, yeah.

• 28:33Mike Smith?

So one of the victims, her name was Isabel Campoy, Isabel Campoy. She said the squirrel launched itself at her face while she was strolling around the Bay Area. Uh, the city of Lucas Valley last week in the Bay Area left her with bruises and deep bloody gashes across her forearm. Quote, "She almost killed me," Isabel said.

• 28:53Wes Larson?

  Geez.

• 28:54Mike Smith?

I was full of blood and I ran to the emergency room and I'm not gonna, I'm not trying to downplay because in the moment you like kind of are freaked out.

• 29:01Wes Larson?

Yeah. She would have made it on our show had she gotten killed by a squirrel like as a main story. Yeah, for sure.

• 29:08Mike Smith?

Right, but the squirrel, it's been going after all kinds of members of the neighborhood. Another, her name was Joan Heblick, she was out on just a morning stroll when she said it jumped out of nowhere and latched onto her leg and started just going to town on it. It was like vertical, so the tail was kind of coming up towards her chest and her face and just freaked her out really bad. The story, it's interesting in conjunction with another study that I saw was performed last year and this is kind of new information to scientists, I guess, about, it was a study performed by the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire and the use, a joint study by them and the University of California. And it was observing squirrels were being a lot more flexible in their diet than they

• 29:51Mike Smith?

were previously assumed to be, not just nuts or like, like more meat, herbivorous. But yeah, they were omnivorous if they were pushed to, you know, like a need to find, it was mostly voles they were going after.

• 30:05Wes Larson?

That'd be so weird if you're just watching a deer and you just see it fall over and you're like huh, and then a little squirrel running all over it.

• 30:13Mike Smith?

  Right.

• 30:14Wes Larson?

Mouth that can kill these old ladies.

• 30:16Mike Smith?

But anyway, it is, it's interesting, it's not like the study wasn't like these squirrels are gonna go after humans and eat their meat or anything, but it is, it's just an interesting development for squirrels in this part of California that's like, oh wow, these squirrels are eating meat and now they're going after humans. I'm not saying, I'm not, I'm just saying.

• 30:34Wes Larson?

Deer will eat squirrels sometimes, yeah.

• 30:36Mike Smith?

  That true?

• 30:37Wes Larson?

  Really?

• 30:37Mike Smith?

  Mm-hmm. Whoa.

• 30:39Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 30:40Mike Smith?

  Wow. Why?

• 30:41Wes Larson?

Uh, just like if they're just like happen to have the opportunity, sometimes they'll do it. It's kind of like they're-

• 30:48Mike Smith?

Did they like chase them down?

• 30:49Wes Larson?

No, it's more like if like they stumbled on one that they were able to catch, they would eat it or if like one was hurt or something. You kind of, that's a, it's always weird when you see these animals that you don't think should eat meat and they do. And you realize it's really off putting, but then it also, you realize like how much it is just about getting calories. You know, it's not so much about like taste or anything. And obviously their biome, their gut biome and everything is only prepared for certain things, but most of these animals will eat meat if they get the chance.

• 31:24Mike Smith?

  That's super interesting.

• 31:25Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 31:25Jeff Larson?

Yeah. Xavier Leggett on the Carolina Panthers.

• 31:30Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 31:31Jeff Larson?

He'll eat squirrels. He'll eat squirrels.

• 31:33Wes Larson?

Yeah. I'd probably eat a squirrel. If I like went to someone's house and they're like, hey, we're eating squirrel tonight. I'd be like, all right, I guess we're eating squirrel tonight, you know?

• 31:41Jeff Larson?

  Sure. Yeah.

They also have Frizzle, a high heat cooking oil that can handle some serious heat, and it's great for baking, grilling, and frying. And for me, it's just been so nice to have all three of those options right there. I can use them for any different type of food that I might be making. • 36:13Wes Larson?

Yeah, I loved, I saw a quick headline from this story and they had like, like a bulletin thing that they were posting around the neighborhood. And it's this photo of the squirrel like jumping at the camera and it like in big red letters says squirrel attack.

• 36:28Mike Smith?

Yeah, this is not a joke. Yeah, big banner. Yeah, it's great.

• 36:32Wes Larson?

We'll have to post it. Mike, on a scale of one to 10, how big of a Survivor fan are you? The show?

• 36:38Mike Smith?

I've never watched a single episode. I don't know. Maybe I would like it, but I think I'd have to say zero. Yeah.

• 36:45Wes Larson?

Or would that be a five? Are you neutral or are you against it?

• 36:50Mike Smith?

I think at my baseline, I'm a little negative towards reality TV in general. So I'll say like a three.

• 36:57Wes Larson?

Okay, cool. We got in a big fight once over if five is neutral or not. We won't rehash that here, but um.

• 37:04Mike Smith?

  No, we won't.

• 37:05Wes Larson?

Anyway, Jeff, how about you? What, where would you say you are on zero to 10? Probably eight. Yeah, I'd say I'm right around there too. Eight or nine. I actually didn't. I watched it the first few seasons with my parents growing up. And then I stopped for a very long time. And then right around the pandemic, I really got into it again. And now I've watched pretty much all the seasons. I've watched a lot of the Australian seasons, which it's a better show. Just gonna come out and say it. But something.

• 37:34Mike Smith?

  Putting your foot down.

• 37:35Wes Larson?

  Shots fired.

• 37:36Mike Smith?

On the, on the important issues, Wes is drawing definitive line in the.

• 37:40Wes Larson?

Uh, there, it's a debate, you know?

• 37:43Mike Smith?

  Sure.

• 37:43Wes Larson?

Something interesting happened in Survivor last two, like a week and a half ago. And it was something that probably is never, or maybe it's two weeks ago. It probably never happened before on the show. And it was an animal attack. So there's a contestant, his name is Jake Latimer. And he's from Winnipeg, Canada. He was relaxing on the edge of the water on the Survivor island, which is in Fiji. When suddenly a yellow lipped sea crate bit his foot. Now, how much do either of you know about this particular snake? They're also called banded sea crates.

• 38:16Jeff Larson?

  Like one to 10?

• 38:18Wes Larson?

No, how much do you know about it?

• 38:20Jeff Larson?

  Right.

• 38:20Wes Larson?

Not a numerical value of what you know.

• 38:23Jeff Larson?

One to 10, I know about like a five about him.

• 38:27Wes Larson?

  Okay.

• 38:27Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 38:27Wes Larson?

  Neutral.

• 38:28Mike Smith?

I would say a 10 because I know about them. They exist out there. So, yeah.

• 38:32Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 38:33Mike Smith?

It's more like a yes or a no, binary.

• 38:35Wes Larson?

All right. Basically, this is a type of sea snake, but it's one that you find more near the coast, around coral reefs, that sort of thing. And they are highly venomous. They're in the elapid family, which puts them in the same family as like cobras and coral snakes. Some of the more venomous snakes in the world. And they too have a really potent neurotoxin. The difference between them and those other snakes, well coral snakes are somewhat similar is that you really have to push these snakes to get bit by them. You have to harass them usually or do something to them to where they'll come up and bite you. Now, we don't know exactly if this guy pushed him or not, but he claims he was just sitting on the side of the water. When suddenly a snake bit his foot.

• 39:17Wes Larson?

Uh, they're front fangs snakes with small front fangs, fangs. And he said that it had latched onto his foot. He ran up to tell some of the other survivors that and people just like came out of the jungle from the production team. Like every, it was all hands on deck. And they're like, wait, what happened? And he told them exactly what had happened and what type of snake. And they're like, okay, we have to get you out of here immediately, you know? And then some of the other survivors, they have this booklet, I guess, in camp that shows like potentially dangerous animals. And one of them opened it to that page and it says like, highly venomous. And they all got pretty worried. Yeah. And I was really curious what was gonna happen. Cause I like, to me, it was like, oh, if he got envenomated, he's probably gonna die.

• 40:01Wes Larson?

Seems like a easy person to vote out. Yeah. Uh, well, we'll get to that. Um, and he was playing a pretty good game, actually, but, uh, he gets on the boat. He starts having a problem breathing. You see him like spitting a lot and I'm thinking, oh, he's, you got a, like a, a real bite. And they take him in and I guess on the way to the island where they have their kind of headquarters with all the staff and medical and whatnot. Uh, they had lost contact. And so when they get into that dock, you hear someone from the dock yell, is he breathing? Is he alive? And because they'd lost contact, they just assumed he might be dead. And when he got there, he was still walking and everything. And so at that point, I'm thinking, okay, there's a decent chance this is a dry bite.

• 40:46Wes Larson?

And sure enough, it was. The symptoms that he was having were probably mostly from shock and anxiety. And, and also like they're starving themselves out on this island. So I'm sure there's other physiological stuff happening, but they treat him. Yeah, it's out of control. Yeah. For sure. They treat him for a snake bite. They realize it's probably a dry bite and they actually end up sending him home because, uh, they just figured that that had been too much of a shock on his system and they couldn't justify putting him back into the game. What? He's probably mad about that, right? I would imagine so. I would be so mad if I got sent home for a dry bite. But I will say the silver lining is he had a baby that was due to be born and he was really bummed

• 41:32Wes Larson?

that he was gonna miss his, like, his first kid's birth while he was in Survivor. And he made it back forty-eight hours before his kid was born. So he got to be there for his son, or I don't know if it was a son or daughter, for his kid's birth. So.

• 41:45Mike Smith?

  Right.

• 41:46Wes Larson?

Pretty crazy moment in reality TV, though. I honestly like that.

• 41:50Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 41:50Wes Larson?

A venomous snake bite, and not just any snake, like, this is a snake. So I did a little diving into the snake's history, and they really hardly ever bite people, but there was a guy in twenty eighteen off the coast of northeastern Australia, a fisherman, who pulled one up in a net and was trying to free it from the net and got bit, and was envenomated, and he died before any kind of help could get to him.

• 42:15Jeff Larson?

Man, that would have been crazy for Survivor.

• 42:19Wes Larson?

  Oh, yeah.

• 42:19Jeff Larson?

  Someone died.

• 42:20Wes Larson?

It probably would have ended the season.

• 42:22Mike Smith?

  Someone finally didn't survive.

• 42:23Jeff Larson?

Well, imagine, too, like, having to stay there after that, you know?

• 42:28Wes Larson?

Like, oh, hey, by the way, Jake, Jake's gone, and everyone's like, oh, you voted him off.

• 42:33Jeff Larson?

Well, even like now, it's kind of scary. It's like, man, I'd be so much more scared.

• 42:38Wes Larson?

Yeah, they did. They talked about that on the show. Jeff was, Jeff Probst, the host, was like, "Just so you guys know, I've talked to everyone. No one's even ever heard of this happening before. None of the locals have ever heard of this happening before." This was like such a freak bite, and it is. Like, for one, just to swim up and bite someone's foot like that is really, really strange. So.

• 43:01Mike Smith?

It is curious to me, though, that on a show called Survivor, everyone just survives.

• 43:05Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 43:06Mike Smith?

It'd be nice if one guy finally died, right?

• 43:08Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 43:09Jeff Larson?

It would make the name more, like, make more sense.

• 43:13Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 43:13Mike Smith?

  Exactly.

• 43:14Jeff Larson?

Like, the show alone, they're alone.

• 43:16Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 43:17Jeff Larson?

And Survivor, they survive, but they, like, you would think someone wouldn't survive.

• 43:24Wes Larson?

I wonder if they would have still aired the season if he died. I bet they would have just scrapped it.

• 43:29Mike Smith?

  Oh, that's an interesting.

• 43:30Jeff Larson?

Just give them all a million dollars.

• 43:31Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 43:33Mike Smith?

So my dad, when he was swimming in college, he got invited to the Olympic trials and he decided to not go because he wanted to stay home for the birth of my oldest brother, like their first child. Do you think that's the right move?

• 43:46Wes Larson?

  Uh, no.

• 43:48Mike Smith?

  I don't think so either.

• 43:49Wes Larson?

Yeah. I think, you know, I think if your wife is like, I need you there, then it's the right move. But if she was like, no, I don't care. Do whatever you want, then like go, you know, I don't know.

• 44:00Mike Smith?

Well, I'll ask my mom how she was.

• 44:02Wes Larson?

  Yeah. Where's that Ouija board?

• 44:04Mike Smith?

  I got it.

• 44:04Wes Larson?

  That's your one question.

• 44:06Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 44:07Wes Larson?

She's like, you get one question.

• 44:09Mike Smith?

Nah, I think he was, he was mostly just like, well, I wasn't gonna make it anyway, but it's like, I don't know, it'd be fun to go and at least try.

• 44:15Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 44:16Mike Smith?

  But.

• 44:16Jeff Larson?

Let's just do our, one of our categories right now. What's your favorite all time moment in Survivor?

• 44:25Wes Larson?

Uh, mine, I think it was Micronesia, but it's, there is, so that, I'm just gonna set the stage. I don't remember their names even. I remember one of their names was Pavardi. But, and Amanda too. But there was like three women, three or four women, and there was a guy that was left too. And he had won the immunity necklace. And there was like, not that many players left. So if he had just like, gone through, like you're supposed to, if you win the immunity necklace, you're not allowed to be voted out. And they went to like the tribal council and the girls convinced him to give it up, like to give it to one of them. Because they promised him they wouldn't vote him out. And it's like, not something you should ever even consider doing. And he gave it away. At tribal council and they immediately voted him out.

• 45:10Mike Smith?

  They got him?

• 45:11Jeff Larson?

  Oh my god.

• 45:11Wes Larson?

Oh yeah. And it was, it was so crazy and shocking that it's, yeah, that's my all time.

• 45:18Jeff Larson?

What did he do when he got voted out?

• 45:20Wes Larson?

Yeah. I mean, he was just thought he was the, he was like, I am so dumb. I can't believe I did that. Yeah.

• 45:26Jeff Larson?

Did he like get mad at the girls or did he say like?

• 45:30Wes Larson?

No, I think he, I think he, he didn't say nice job, but I think he just like, was like, that was dumb. I should not even considered that. Yeah.

• 45:38Mike Smith?

  Hmm.

• 45:39Jeff Larson?

Uh, I really like early Survivor a lot. Season one, I like in the final thing, they used to ask just the craziest question.

• 45:51Jeff Larson?

And one of the ladies was like, if you were in the desert about to die from thirst, I would not give you my water. To like the girl who ended up winning.

• 46:02Wes Larson?

Like that's so mad still. They took it so seriously.

• 46:05Jeff Larson?

And then, yeah, my favorite guy ever is Boston Rob. So his first season where he like, played it perfectly and then is him and it, he started dating Amber on the show. And like, is between them in the end and he proposes to her.

• 46:24Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 46:24Jeff Larson?

And it's like, okay, so they both won no matter who won, yeah.

• 46:28Wes Larson?

Yeah, it's a great movie. Yeah.

• 46:30Mike Smith?

Uh, I did, again, I've never really watched a full episode of the show, but I do remember, it was the first season with the naked guy, right? That, yeah, Richard Hatch. Our whole like third or fourth grade class, whenever that was airing was just in an uproar because this guy was naked.

• 46:46Jeff Larson?

Well, he like caught a shark with his bare hands, dude.

• 46:50Wes Larson?

That was a, yeah, that was one of his other seasons, but.

• 46:53Jeff Larson?

I think it was the first season.

• 46:55Wes Larson?

It wasn't. It was like season three or four, I think. But I'm sure it was a different.

• 47:01Jeff Larson?

After winning season one in season three or four?

• 47:03Wes Larson?

They brought him back. I've seen it. Yeah.

• 47:06Jeff Larson?

I know they did, but it was a while later.

• 47:08Wes Larson?

Yeah. It, I remember the scene because he pulls the shark out and then it bites him on the arm, actually. So there has been another animal attack. Yeah.

• 47:16Mike Smith?

  Hey.

• 47:17Wes Larson?

But I do, if you want to put down some money, I'll put down some money, but I'm positive on this one.

• 47:22Jeff Larson?

Okay, nevermind then. Um, so you shouldn't have said you're positive.

• 47:27Wes Larson?

  I know, I just.

• 47:29Jeff Larson?

You could have gotten some money out of me there.

• 47:31Mike Smith?

  Finessed him there.

• 47:32Wes Larson?

You usually don't care if I say I'm positive is why I said that. Usually you'll do it.

• 47:36Jeff Larson?

  You say it a lot.

• 47:37Wes Larson?

I know, so why don't you might as well bet me.

• 47:39Jeff Larson?

  You overused it.

• 47:41Wes Larson?

  Then bet me.

• 47:42Mike Smith?

  It's cheating.

• 47:43Jeff Larson?

  Nah, I'm not that confident.

• 47:45Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 47:46Jeff Larson?

But what was I gonna say? Oh yeah, I think Richard got arrested too because he won and then he didn't pay taxes.

• 47:53Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 47:55Wes Larson?

Yeah, he did some jail time.

• 47:56Mike Smith?

That's one thing that like, I just, if I hear about like when Wesley Snipes was going through the tax evasion thing, I was just not bothered in the least by it. It's like, oh, I don't care that.

• 48:07Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 48:07Mike Smith?

  Good for him.

• 48:08Wes Larson?

  Good for, good try.

• 48:10Jeff Larson?

Guy in California won like the biggest lottery ever and is two billion. And after taxes, he ended up with like 400 million.

• 48:21Wes Larson?

  Yeah, crazy.

• 48:23Jeff Larson?

And everyone's like, he's the only billionaire paying appropriate taxes.

• 48:27Wes Larson?

  That's true.

• 53:10Jeff Larson?

You did a bear, I did a bear, you did a snake, I'll do a snake. All right. So this is a pygmy molga snake. You ever heard of those? No. Venomous snake in Australia. Highly. I think it was a pygmy molga snake, it could be wrong. The article actually never reported what type of snake it was. But then it had a picture of a pygmy. Molga snake. Okay. So I assume that's what it was. And I looked at a few articles and it never said, but in the Northern Territory. In Australia. I mean, we went to Australia, a lot of people walk around barefoot in Australia. It's a very clean country. You know, not much glass on the ground to keep it clean. And a lot of people walk around barefoot.

• 53:55Jeff Larson?

So this forty one year old woman. She liked to walk around barefoot in her suburban neighborhood, right? Sure. She's walking around and she steps on a pygmy molga snake. I think it looks a lot like an inland typan. Okay. So she steps on this little snake, looks like a inland typan, it looks like a venom, like it could be venomous. So first thing you would do is like. See if you got bit or not, right? So uh she starts checking her foot for any signs of blood or teeth marks or anything. And she can't find like a single scrape, a single like thing on her foot. So she thinks she just stepped on a snake and nothing happened.

• 54:39Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 54:39Jeff Larson?

So 10 minutes later, she goes to her country club. And she asked her worker who asked not to be, she asked a worker who asked not to be named. To help her check her feet for bite marks and told them the story, right? And um the worker said she had mentioned she'd stepped on snake, maybe she had gotten bitten. There's no blood, no marks, nothing. Then we again asked, are you okay? Are you feeling any different? Did you feel it bite you? And she said she didn't. 20 minutes after signing in at the club, the woman collapsed.

• 55:13Wes Larson?

  Wow.

• 55:14Jeff Larson?

  Um.

• 55:14Wes Larson?

  Whoa.

• 55:15Jeff Larson?

They started giving her CPR, they called for help. And she wasn't able to like be resuscitated and she ended up dying. So.

• 55:25Wes Larson?

  Gosh.

• 55:25Jeff Larson?

Yeah, pretty crazy. I don't know, like, I feel like. Out of caution, you should just, there it's called triple zero.

• 55:34Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 55:34Jeff Larson?

But like you should, if you step on a snake in Australia, you should probably.

• 55:40Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 55:40Jeff Larson?

  Make the call.

• 55:41Wes Larson?

Especially if you, if you can't identify it without a doubt, call someone, yeah. Uh, I just looked them up. They're, they're in another, they're another elapid snake. So the same family. There's cobras and typhans and the sea crates and everything, like highly venomous snakes.

• 55:58Jeff Larson?

  Yeah.

• 55:59Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 55:59Jeff Larson?

I mean, and I'm not, I'm not confirming that that was the type of snake it was because. That, like I said, unfortunately, I couldn't find an article that. I think, I don't know if they really know because like she didn't take a picture, she didn't like have the snake, so.

• 56:16Wes Larson?

Yeah. It'd probably be pretty hard to tell.

• 56:19Jeff Larson?

But yeah, pretty, I don't know, I, you should for sure call for help, but on the other hand, like, if I felt pretty confident I wasn't bitten, I could like, see where my brain would kind of go the same way as hers did, like, I'll just go to a public place, they'll be able to like, get me help if I need it and

• 56:39Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 56:40Jeff Larson?

make sure I don't start feeling any symptoms type of thing, you know?

• 56:45Wes Larson?

Well, especially here, I don't know how their healthcare system works, but like in the US, I do everything I can to avoid calling emergency services because it's like, oh, do I want to be in debt for the next 20 years? You know, so, yeah.

• 56:59Mike Smith?

I don't feel confident, even inside my own home, walking around without socks on at least.

• 57:05Wes Larson?

  Really?

• 57:05Mike Smith?

  I just

• 57:06Wes Larson?

  I love going barefoot.

• 57:07Mike Smith?

Walking around barefoot is just the scariest proposition to me.

• 57:11Jeff Larson?

  Huh.

• 57:11Mike Smith?

  I, every step is

• 57:13Jeff Larson?

  Like it scares you.

• 57:13Mike Smith?

Yeah, like at a pool, it's the fewer steps I have to take to get into the water, the better. I was just always in mind full of stepping on something like a Lego.

• 57:22Wes Larson?

  Yeah, I like going barefoot.

• 57:25Mike Smith?

  Like a bomb.

• 57:26Jeff Larson?

  That would suck.

• 57:27Mike Smith?

  It would suck, dude.

• 57:29Jeff Larson?

  Unless you have shoes on.

• 57:31Mike Smith?

  Right.

• 57:32Jeff Larson?

  Or socks.

• 57:32Mike Smith?

  Like steel-toed boots.

• 57:35Jeff Larson?

  Those socks Brent had.

• 57:37Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 57:40Mike Smith?

  The spider silk.

• 57:42Jeff Larson?

That's a subscriber. Subscriber only joke there. Yeah, that's why I have.

• 57:50Mike Smith?

Yeah, I also have a story, but it is that, that's a coincidence.

• 57:53Wes Larson?

  That's crazy.

• 57:54Mike Smith?

So it's always the guys you expect the least, right? So, which I actually don't believe.

• 58:00Jeff Larson?

Most medium expect from Dwight Schrute. I think that is actually pretty good.

• 58:06Mike Smith?

Okay, well, this was reported October 30th of this year by Yahoo News is where I got most of this info from. Uh, recently, sprinting swimmers in the Marathi Beach in Greece, at the Marathi Beach in Greece, who've been reporting an incident that raised a few eyebrows from the locals, since it's not every day that you hear about a sea turtle biting someone so badly that they feel like they might faint. Right?

• 58:30Wes Larson?

  Well, if

• 58:30Mike Smith?

At least not in my world.

• 58:32Wes Larson?

If it's in Greece, they're gonna be like really thick, beautiful eyebrows that are getting raised too.

• 58:36Mike Smith?

  I know.

• 58:36Wes Larson?

  Which is nice.

• 58:37Mike Smith?

  Gosh.

• 58:38Jeff Larson?

  Is that true?

• 58:39Wes Larson?

  I'd kill for that.

• 58:40Mike Smith?

  Have you ever seen a

• 58:40Wes Larson?

  Kind of eyebrows, Mike?

• 58:41Mike Smith?

  A Grecian eyebrow?

• 58:43Jeff Larson?

  Oh, I can't.

• 58:45Wes Larson?

  I don't know.

• 58:45Mike Smith?

I know. Sometimes I do, I get remarks on my eyebrows and it's like, you guys, you, you haven't seen anything yet. Go to Greece is what I'm always saying back to them.

• 58:55Wes Larson?

Sure. So wait, they said it was a what? A turtle?

• 58:58Mike Smith?

  Sea turtle.

• 58:59Wes Larson?

  Okay.

• 58:59Mike Smith?

Like, I think just a green sea turtle. According to Zarpa News, the woman who was bit was in the shallow, it's so Greek, it's awesome. Zarpa, Zarpa News. She was in the shallows, just a few feet off the beach, just in a very shallow part of the ocean, when she was attacked and bitten by the turtle sustaining injuries on her, quote, bottom.

• 59:20Wes Larson?

  Ooh, her bum?

• 59:22Mike Smith?

Her bum. So here's the thing though. So half of the articles called it her, her rump and half of them called them her thigh. And I just wondered, you guys, what's the, where do you differentiate on those two things? Is it the same thing to you?

• 59:35Wes Larson?

For me, it's, once the bubble of the butt comes out, it's rump.

• 59:39Mike Smith?

  Right.

• 59:39Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 59:40Jeff Larson?

  I think that's pretty clear.

• 59:41Wes Larson?

  Below that's thigh. Yeah.

• 59:42Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 59:43Wes Larson?

And then ass. Ass is also.

• 59:47Jeff Larson?

Ass and rump are the same.

• 59:48Wes Larson?

Yeah, they're the same, unless you're eating ass.

• 59:50Jeff Larson?

  Like this turtle.

• 59:51Mike Smith?

  Right.

• 59:52Wes Larson?

Yeah. This turtle was eating ass.

• 59:55Mike Smith?

But, like, literally, yeah. But butt is legs, we've established.

• 1:00:00Wes Larson?

Uh, butt is, sure, butt is legs. Yeah, we talked about that before. Butt is legs.

• 1:00:05Mike Smith?

  So.

• 1:00:05Jeff Larson?

Legs is a lot of stuff, though. Like calf is legs, thigh is legs.

• 1:00:10Mike Smith?

  Would you consider feet legs?

• 1:00:11Jeff Larson?

  Feet is legs.

• 1:00:12Wes Larson?

  Is your dong your legs?

• 1:00:13Jeff Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:14Mike Smith?

  Your dong is your legs?

• 1:00:16Jeff Larson?

  I wasn't, I was answering Mike.

• 1:00:17Wes Larson?

  Okay, I was surprised.

• 1:00:19Mike Smith?

  What is your dong then?

• 1:00:21Wes Larson?

It's like in the middle of your legs and your waist.

• 1:00:23Mike Smith?

Midsection. That's what they always say in basketball. It's like, ooh, a shot to the midsection. It's like, no, it was just his balls is what happened. His balls happened. Anyway.

• 1:00:32Jeff Larson?

I never know exactly what they mean when they say midsection, cause I'm, sometimes it is just a gut punch, you know?

• 1:00:39Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:39Mike Smith?

  Right.

• 1:00:40Wes Larson?

They should say groin. That's very, yeah.

• 1:00:43Jeff Larson?

You should just say penis, that's the meta term.

• 1:00:46Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:46Mike Smith?

  Yeah. Peter.

• 1:00:49Wes Larson?

That was our term, growing up.

• 1:00:51Mike Smith?

Okay. Well, anyway, so this woman, she was identified only by her initials, which are KB, though it could be anyone.

• 1:00:58Wes Larson?

  That might be anyone.

• 1:01:00Mike Smith?

  Kate Bush.

• 1:01:00Wes Larson?

  Kobe Bryant.

• 1:01:01Mike Smith?

  Kobe Bryant, he's dead though.

• 1:01:03Wes Larson?

Who knows? Maybe he's living in Greece, getting his ass eaten by turtles.

• 1:01:07Jeff Larson?

Yeah, maybe he just was tired of the limelight.

• 1:01:10Mike Smith?

Yeah, okay. Well, it could have been. Well, it was a woman.

• 1:01:15Mike Smith?

Maybe, I don't know, maybe he changed his identity to remain anonymous. So the bite victim, KB, discussed how eventually the bite had led to an infection, which led to her being hospitalized. And you, you've worked with turtles, like sea turtles in the past, right?

• 1:01:29Wes Larson?

I've gotten bit by a sea turtle.

• 1:01:31Mike Smith?

  Are they chompy?

• 1:01:32Wes Larson?

Yeah, they're very chompy, especially out of the water, for me, in my experience. Yeah, they can be pretty chompy, for sure.

• 1:01:40Mike Smith?

And it's like, I mean, they all have different physiology, but these turtles have a kind of a beak, right? That is more like a piercing, more so than like a...

• 1:01:48Wes Larson?

Pretty much all, all sea turtles have that, but there's a fair amount of pressure in there. When I got bit, it split all along the lines of the beak, like the edges. But they, I mean, you know, when I say they're chompy, like, obviously, every day, there are thousands of interactions between people and sea turtles, where people don't get bit, you know? But like, it's not like it's unheard of. They do, they do bite.

• 1:02:12Jeff Larson?

That's mainly to help them if a shark ever grabs them.

• 1:02:15Wes Larson?

Yeah, they, I mean, it's like, yeah, it's their only defense, sure. I mean, that's not wrong necessarily, yeah.

• 1:02:24Mike Smith?

I think they're probably mostly for like eating food.

• 1:02:27Jeff Larson?

  Right.

• 1:02:27Mike Smith?

  I mean, they get it.

• 1:02:29Wes Larson?

But like, biting defensively, it would be for like, if a shark got him or something got him, they would turn around and try and bite it. He's not wrong.

• 1:02:37Mike Smith?

What are humans' mouths, mouths most used for?

• 1:02:41Wes Larson?

  Uh, biting, probably.

• 1:02:42Jeff Larson?

  Yeah, talking. Sure, it's talking.

• 1:02:44Mike Smith?

  Breathing.

• 1:02:44Jeff Larson?

  If a shark grabs us.

• 1:02:46Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:50Mike Smith?

Okay, well, something, I thought this is a little interesting to take note of is that unlike other marine attacks, and it's kind of common sense when you think about this for more than a couple of seconds, but the experts were saying... Unlike in shark attacks where you don't want to make a lot of commotion in the water, because that'll attract those kinds of predators, or, you know, sea life, you'll want to get big and kind of flail around violently to scare these turtles off. Which makes sense, because, you know, they're not quite in the same league.

• 1:03:18Wes Larson?

The difference is like with sharks, you don't want to provoke them to come in and attack you in like a predatory way or a territorial way. And like, that's what their prey does, is splashes around a lot. But like, with turtles, they're not trying to feed on you. Like, they're either being defensive or aggressive, so you're just trying to discourage it. So it makes sense you would splash and make a lot of commotion.

• 1:03:40Mike Smith?

One of these experts named Demetrius Futilis, I believe is how it's pronounced, he, he explained that turtles can actually come to associate humans with being rivals for their food sources. So, they'll kind of, they'll approach you and try to chase you off. And it's kind of interesting to think of turtles seeing a human as a kind of a competitor almost out of the water.

• 1:04:04Wes Larson?

  That is interesting.

• 1:04:05Mike Smith?

  That imagery.

• 1:04:06Wes Larson?

Cause they're mostly just eating like sea grass and algae. So that's pretty strange that they would see us as, man, they're dumb.

• 1:04:14Mike Smith?

  They're good at breakdancing now.

• 1:04:16Wes Larson?

Yeah. Turtles? Oh, they are. That's true.

• 1:04:20Mike Smith?

  Go ninja.

• 1:04:20Wes Larson?

  Go ninja.

• 1:04:24Mike Smith?

They got one move, but they're so good at.

• 1:04:28Wes Larson?

They can't really get out of it. After they interviewed this KB person, did she like, step back and hit a fadeaway jumper from like beyond the arc?

• 1:04:37Mike Smith?

She, she broke out into a live rendition of "Cloud Busting", kind of was really curious.

• 1:04:42Wes Larson?

  Who's that?

• 1:04:43Mike Smith?

  Running, "Kait Bush".

• 1:04:44Wes Larson?

  Oh, "Kait Bush".

• 1:04:45Mike Smith?

It's her best song. Anyway, um, that's it for the story. So, one final note, I guess. Uh, actually, I lied. I misled you. Not intentionally, I didn't mean to do that. I'm not done yet, Jeff.

• 1:04:57Jeff Larson?

  Stop.

• 1:04:58Mike Smith?

Okay, but these bites, this infection that KB sustained, they can be fatal if you leave them untreated. Uh, and it was, it really was just one of the most painful things she had ever experienced. So just, uh, you know, we are an animal attack podcast, so as much pain as we can invoke into the conversation, the better, right? Pain and death.

• 1:05:17Wes Larson?

  We wanted those gory details.

• 1:05:19Jeff Larson?

Couple of times now turtles have eaten someone's ass.

• 1:05:23Wes Larson?

Yeah, I love it. All right.

• 1:05:26Jeff Larson?

  Like Mike.

• 1:05:29Wes Larson?

  Just like mine.

• 1:05:31Wes Larson?

I wish dude, it's been so long.

• 1:05:33Mike Smith?

  I got it.

• 1:05:36Wes Larson?

Just cause it's, just cause it's been a long time, doesn't mean you can't love it. All right, uh, I'm gonna give us a pause to reconnect and then I'm gonna talk about one more sad one. That'll bring us down.

• 1:05:51Mike Smith?

  Yeah, I'm appropriately sad now.

• 1:05:53Wes Larson?

Okay, this is just a quick one, but one that a couple of people sent to us. A very prominent kite surfer in South Africa was reported missing on September 7th. Where do you guys think this is going?

• 1:06:05Mike Smith?

  Kite surfing.

• 1:06:06Wes Larson?

  Africa kite surfer reported missing.

• 1:06:09Mike Smith?

  Shark.

• 1:06:09Wes Larson?

You'd think a shark, you know, you hear South Africa and someone going missing in the ocean on an animal attack podcast. You'd think a shark, but it's not. After he went missing, a very large search was launched. His board and his kite were located at sea on September 8th. And then his body was recovered not long after. Initial, initial reports showed that it was probably just a simple tragic drowning. Uh, but then authorities went over all of the evidence in October and a different picture started emerging. Based on damages to his equipment and some video footage that had survived this tragedy. The prevailing theory now is that this guy Graham Howes had been kite boarding with a pod of whales

• 1:06:50Wes Larson?

near Cape Town when one of these animals breached from the water, struck him with over a ton of force, immediately knocking him out and he drowned to death.

• 1:06:59Mike Smith?

  Wow.

• 1:06:59Jeff Larson?

  Jeez.

• 1:07:00Wes Larson?

Yeah, so at least, I mean. You know, if this is any consolation, it would be a very quick peaceful way to die. One minute you'd just be kite surfing and the next minute you're dead, you know?

• 1:07:13Mike Smith?

  Sure.

• 1:07:13Wes Larson?

Because you would just get knocked out and and drown. Like, I don't know, do people wake up when they're drowning? I don't know if you're knocked out from a whale.

• 1:07:22Jeff Larson?

  Drowning when they wake up.

• 1:07:24Wes Larson?

Yeah. Okay. Anyway, yeah, that's what they think happened. So I'm guessing what they have to have is some video that he shot of like whales next to him. And it was like, you know, they can place it close to the time that he drowned or something. But apparently this was like the guy when it came to the kite boarding community and scene in South Africa. In South Africa, there's been like a ton of nice tributes about him. He seemed like he was a really influential person in that community and like had started a lot of different clubs and all sorts of stuff for it. So he's very missed. Uh, there's some very touching tributes to him, but uh, kind of a crazy way to go, you know?

• 1:08:06Mike Smith?

Yeah. It's how much power those whales have, just a simple flick of the tail, you know, that's gonna it's really sobering.

• 1:08:16Wes Larson?

There's a few videos, I think ones in South Africa where you see them breach and land on a boat and just like demolish it. So, yeah, they're huge animals that need to be respected. So, R I P.

• 1:08:31Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:32Wes Larson?

Yeah. All right. That's all I got this week.

• 1:08:35Jeff Larson?

I'm lucky it's not a bear or you would kill it.

• 1:08:39Wes Larson?

  I wouldn't.

• 1:08:43Wes Larson?

If it fed on him, then I would say, oh, that's probably a bear you gotta get rid of.

• 1:08:47Jeff Larson?

I'm just messing with you. I think you make a lot of sense with the bear stuff. You know, you know. Uh, I have a couple of headlines. So on October twenty eighth, I don't know if you guys saw this, but a truck transporting monkeys uh from Tulane University crashed. I think I did see this. These were highly aggressive monkeys too. And weren't they doing like medical tests on them too? Yeah, so they had, yeah, they had hepatitis C, herpes and COVID. And they were just like very aggressive monkeys. All at the same time?

• 1:09:30Jeff Larson?

And I was looking and it said one of the macaques is still like on the loose. And then I looked into that and they're like, actually three are.

• 1:09:42Jeff Larson?

Like actually all of them are. And I think they're trying to keep it as hush hush as possible. Because I think a lot of people are just kinda like, that's kinda wack, you gave monkeys herpes, hepatitis and COVID, you know? Yeah, so we're gonna have like COVID twenty five coming out pretty soon and then everyone's gonna blame it on China. And I guess like this type of macaque, I forget what type it is, it's like dirt, or what was it? Reese's?

• 1:10:14Mike Smith?

  Dirt mechanic?

• 1:10:14Jeff Larson?

Yeah, Reese's is Reese's macaques. That's what they usually use. Ninety-three percent DNA with humans, so I think they- It's not hard to pass diseases then. I think they get pretty fucked over as far as medical experimentation goes. Yeah. I think we've been using them for a while to test different things. You know what? Kinda sucks. Yeah.

• 1:10:40Mike Smith?

Stop fooling around with macaques for a little bit, everyone out there.

• 1:10:42Jeff Larson?

  Yeah. And then um-

• 1:10:45Mike Smith?

Just give it till next year.

• 1:10:46Wes Larson?

What if there was a scientist out there that was just about to with a macaque and then he heard that mic and instruments down?

• 1:10:54Mike Smith?

Yeah, spread the word. People need to know about tooth and claw. We're saving lives.

• 1:10:58Jeff Larson?

There there is another sea otter that was kicking people off of surfboards in Santa Cruz. There was some gray wolves in California that were just killed for killing seventy farm animals. Feel like California doesn't have a lot of gray wolves, right?

• 1:11:16Wes Larson?

They don't. No. And it was over time, too, because like gray wolves could do that in a single night if they really wanted to. This was over a matter of weeks and they finally got rid of them. But, uh, yeah, I don't know. I don't know how I feel about that one.

• 1:11:30Jeff Larson?

  Put it on their flag.

• 1:11:31Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:32Jeff Larson?

  Gray wolves.

• 1:11:35Mike Smith?

Yeah, wolves, bears, put them all on there.

• 1:11:38Jeff Larson?

  Well, that's all I got.

• 1:11:40Wes Larson?

  All right.

• 1:11:41Jeff Larson?

All right. Should we go categories?

• 1:11:42Wes Larson?

  Let's do it.

• 1:11:43Mike Smith?

  We should.

• 1:11:44Jeff Larson?

Okay. I will lead our categories today. So this one, I just was curious. You guys take best and worst AI videos you've seen. Uh, I can start us off there. There was one I kind of liked where is just like people scrubbing barnacles off of whales. Like these ships that looked like they were designed to scrub. And these whales would just have like way too many barnacles and then they would just clean them all off. And it's just like, I like power washing videos. Like I've watched so many power washing videos. It's kind of like that same thing a little bit.

• 1:12:23Jeff Larson?

And then there's been some like kind of funny Pixar movie type ones recently that sometimes they're dumb and sometimes it's like, that's kind of funny. Like AI is making jokes that we can't make because we get in trouble.

• 1:12:42Jeff Larson?

  It's weird thing.

• 1:12:44Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:44Jeff Larson?

  It is weird.

• 1:12:45Mike Smith?

Jeff extolling the virtues of AI because they get to make.

• 1:12:49Jeff Larson?

  Can't cancel.

• 1:12:50Wes Larson?

  Uncancellable.

• 1:12:51Jeff Larson?

And then there was one. There's one that's like, I think, I mean, obviously this was always coming, but there's a really scary one. Neil deGrasse type Neil deGrasse Tyson, like the, is that how you say his name?

• 1:13:08Mike Smith?

  Yeah. As a physicist.

• 1:13:10Jeff Larson?

Yeah, he, I just watched one where like it's him saying like, you know what? After like going over all this footage or satellites and all this data we have, I've come to the conclusion the world might actually be flat. And then the video pans out to him actually there. He's like, this is a video that people are sharing and that's a kind of a problem.

• 1:13:37Wes Larson?

  It is a problem.

• 1:13:38Mike Smith?

  Bit of a problem.

• 1:13:39Wes Larson?

  It's already breaking people's brains.

• 1:13:41Jeff Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:41Wes Larson?

Uh, I want to preface mine, my answer to this question by saying, I'm pretty anti AI. And when I say pretty, like, I mean, very. I think it's, especially when it comes to making like videos, art, photos, anything generative that's that we use human emotion and human soul to make, even if it's like dumb videos. I really, really, really dislike it. So I don't have a single video that I like.

• 1:14:09Jeff Larson?

So blatantly like copyright stealing too. It's just they're getting away with it.

• 1:14:16Mike Smith?

Well, that's literally what it is. It just steals other people's.

• 1:14:19Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:20Mike Smith?

  Pre-established works of art.

• 1:14:22Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:22Mike Smith?

Yeah, like it can't create art on its own. It is just going off of what is already in existence.

• 1:14:28Wes Larson?

  Kind of.

• 1:14:28Mike Smith?

So. You know, I, I'm kind of mansplaining those obnoxious, sorry.

• 1:14:31Wes Larson?

We've, we've talked about this before, but like, I could get chat GPT and say, hey, tell me a story in the, in the like tone of tooth and claw podcast about this incident. And probably save myself, you know, 10 hours of work every week. But I'm not gonna do that because I really distrust AI. I don't like AI. So my favorite video is gonna be, I'm just gonna say a recent one I saw where it was like trying to recreate a sitcom from the nineties. And it was this really disturbing uncanny valley like Friends knockoff. Where people were like replicating themselves and just, it was so strange to watch.

• 1:15:12Wes Larson?

And the reason that's my favorite is because I don't see how anyone can watch that and think, oh, this is a good thing we got going here, you know, like this thing is gonna really change. And I know it's developing and becoming better and better, but still.

• 1:15:26Mike Smith?

  Right.

• 1:15:27Wes Larson?

My least favorite is any animal AI video because I get sent a lot of them. And I am so tired of having to tell people that they're sending me an AI video, so.

• 1:15:39Mike Smith?

See, my favorite one, actually, they're the ones that there's like a drone drone footage above the Amazon River. And then there's just this snake that takes up the entire, that's like.

• 1:15:50Jeff Larson?

It's kind of funny when people believe it.

• 1:15:53Mike Smith?

Right. That's, it's funny and it's a problem, but it's like, maybe these people are too dumb to, we should revoke their right to use the internet, maybe.

• 1:16:02Wes Larson?

Doesn't it kind of make you want to die when you click on the comments and you just see like thirty of people being like, that's crazy, that's the biggest snake I've ever seen.

• 1:16:10Jeff Larson?

I think it's kind of funny. Hank from Pardon My Take, like the biggest sports podcaster was fell for that particular video. And the whale.

• 1:16:20Wes Larson?

Crazy. Yeah. I think, I think though, like on a more, like slightly more serious note, I know I've already kind of been a downer about this. But like with animals, the, the thing that scares me is you see these videos that are AI of people doing really dangerous things around animals. And then people think that's real and they think they can get away with that. Or things that are like bad for the animals or whatever. And so for me, it's, it's already bad that you have real videos of people doing that. And now that we have like tons of fake videos of people doing it, it's just like a flood of terrible animal information that's going out in the world. So it, yeah, I don't know.

• 1:17:00Jeff Larson?

The golden retriever scuba diving was pretty good.

• 1:17:04Mike Smith?

That's pretty, you gotta admit, that's.

• 1:17:06Jeff Larson?

  The rabbits on the trap.

• 1:17:07Wes Larson?

  Not admit it.

• 1:17:11Mike Smith?

Yeah, so I think Wes even brought this up somewhat fairly recently, but one of my favorite old movies is Jason, the Argonauts. And there's this really awesome scene where there's these skeletons pop up out of the ground and start attacking the heroes group. And it's just the most intricately staged and choreographed stop motion. And like, there's a whole, there's, I mean, whole documentaries have been made about this specific scene. And then someone on the internet's just like, hey, look what I did to update this old movie using AI. Isn't it so much better? And it was just like, removed all of the magic, removed all of the charm. And it was just like, it looked worse, it looked bad. I just, there's something about it that it was so infuriating to me.

• 1:17:57Wes Larson?

  That's the other thing, yeah.

• 1:17:58Mike Smith?

People in the comments were just like, oh, my gosh, this is a miracle. And it's like, no, it's not. This is like, we're, this is, we're going towards hell. Yeah, looking at this.

• 1:18:07Wes Larson?

That's the other thing that's so frustrating for me is it's like, always these tech bros that are like, look what I made. Look how amazing this is. And it's like, right. It looks like horseshit, man. That looks terrible. You know, but then there's 30, like, 300 other people saying, oh, this is incredible. Like, what prompt did you use? You know?

• 1:18:26Mike Smith?

Makes me need to go lay down.

• 1:18:28Wes Larson?

  Me too.

• 1:18:28Jeff Larson?

Like, the last real, genuine human art we got was the bored apes.

• 1:18:36Mike Smith?

It's all been downhill since Bored Ape Club or whatever.

• 1:18:41Wes Larson?

Oh, I'm so glad you said that, because that's what my, one of my favorite headlines of the month was, which is one of our other categories.

• 1:18:48Jeff Larson?

Yeah, favorite. So yeah, favorite non-animal headline of just recently.

• 1:18:55Wes Larson?

I have two, because one of them is kind of animals, because it's about the bored apes, which if you don't know what this is, a while ago, when they were doing NFTs, when NFT was like, the huge thing, and everyone was buying NFTs, which are non-fungible tokens. It's essentially like, you own the digital footprint of a piece of art. It's the dumbest thing. And a lot of people knew it was dumb. But some people didn't. And the biggest one were the bored apes, I think. And people were paying hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars for these things. And I saw a headline this month of this guy who had bought one for 400 something thousand dollars. And he had just sold it for $37,000. And the headline was all about how he

• 1:19:40Wes Larson?

Thought that he still got his money's worth because he got to be, yeah, he got to be like part of the apes community. It was like the biggest piece of cope. Cope. That I've ever read in my entire life. And he's tattooed with like all these bored ape tattoos and stuff. And then it ended with like apes till I die or something. I can't remember what it was, but it was just like, come on, man. We're all looking for a place to belong. On that one.

• 1:20:07Jeff Larson?

I remember, I always remember like being at a jazz game and there is, I think Rudy Gobert, like on the jazz, whatever he was important to their winning, but like he was just always like kind of boring.

• 1:20:22Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:23Jeff Larson?

And there's this game where he dunked it with two hands and the guy next to me is like, I'm buying that. I was like, what? He's like, yeah, no, there's this app you can like buy when a player like does something cool. And then you're the only one that owns that video. I was like, sure, but I can still just get that video from online.

• 1:20:45Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:45Jeff Larson?

And they're like, yeah, but like not with this company. And that's where I was kind of like, man.

• 1:20:53Wes Larson?

It was the biggest like snake oil thing ever. The, the tweet that I-

• 1:20:57Jeff Larson?

  IP or whatever.

• 1:20:59Wes Larson?

  Go ahead, Mike. Crazy.

• 1:21:00Mike Smith?

No, it's just, I had an employee who was just lamenting the fact that all of his NFTs lost value and he was just not making any money off of this. And after five minutes of complaining about it, he came to the realization, he just said to himself, I just gotta buy more expensive ones, I think. It's like, no, that's not the conclusion. You were, you were headed in the right direction. We didn't quite get there.

• 1:21:26Wes Larson?

I remember when the apes thing was going crazy, there was someone who had his stolen and he tweeted, my apes, they're gone. And it was just like a tweet I think about all the time. There's just such a weird snapshot in the middle of like a collective psychosis, you know? But.

• 1:21:48Mike Smith?

Our heart goes out to him.

• 1:21:49Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:50Jeff Larson?

Are you gonna do your other one or should we?

• 1:21:52Wes Larson?

Yeah, the other one is really quick, but um, do you guys know much about Lily, Lily Allen and David Harbour?

• 1:21:59Mike Smith?

Oh, yeah. I mean, not a lot, but I know they're.

• 1:22:02Wes Larson?

Yeah. So they got married a few years ago and Lily Allen, then they got divorced and Lily Allen just released an album. And like every track is about him and how bad he is. There's like a track called, there's a track called Pussy Palace. That's all about how he turned their apartment into just like a sex den and how she had to pick up like all these sex toys and stuff from other women. It's just like the entire album.

• 1:22:28Mike Smith?

  What the?

• 1:22:28Wes Larson?

Is just them, her airing all of their dirty laundry.

• 1:22:31Jeff Larson?

  That's great.

• 1:22:32Wes Larson?

And it's pretty crazy. So that was a wild headline from the month. Yeah.

• 1:22:38Jeff Larson?

  Um, okay. My god.

• 1:22:40Mike Smith?

Jeff. Okay, I got it. So this is the headline. John Woo's Hong Kong classic has been rescued and restored in 4K. You guys know John Woo. We're talking about Hard Boiled here because for a long time we thought the original prints of this movie were just like they were lost to time. No one knew where they were. And then they got discovered, but it started getting tangled up in these, the people that owned the rights had no interest in distributing them to the public. So all we had were just like low quality, low resolution releases or bootlegs, but we're here. It's time. We're getting a physical 4K disc release of one of my 15 favorite movies ever. Top 20 movie for me. Man, I'm so excited.

• 1:23:22Jeff Larson?

  Hard Boiled?

• 1:23:23Mike Smith?

Hard Boiled, yeah. And a bunch of his other stuff like, yeah.

• 1:23:26Jeff Larson?

I saw a headline from one of his movies this month about Mission Impossible 2. There's like the scene where the knife is right next to Tom Cruise's eye and he's like doing the wrestling thing. And like it's been done a ton, but I feel like that was an earlier one where they did that. And apparently Tom Cruise insisted it be a real knife.

• 1:23:47Mike Smith?

  Really?

• 1:23:48Jeff Larson?

  Really?

• 1:23:49Mike Smith?

Oh, my gosh. That's crazy. That's got so.

• 1:23:52Jeff Larson?

So close to his eyeball. Yeah. Uh, mine was that the show Ridiculousness got canceled.

• 1:24:00Mike Smith?

Really? It used to be like all MTV shows.

• 1:24:03Jeff Larson?

  After fifteen, it is still.

• 1:24:05Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:05Jeff Larson?

After fifteen seasons, it's getting canceled. So, I don't know, like, I grew up on MTV, just all their stupid dating shows, The Challenge, The Real World, Road Rules. Like, I ate up any MTV content, music videos. So, it's turned into just a channel of ridiculousness, and now that they're getting rid of that, I'm just like, what is MTV gonna be?

• 1:24:33Mike Smith?

It's gotta just be done, right? Is it dead? I have to go rescue a horse real quick. Kevin's getting harassed. You guys keep going. Yeah, yeah, we'll, we'll cover.

• 1:24:44Jeff Larson?

Keep talking. Well, I mean, the next one's overrated, so if you have a couple of overrated things.

• 1:24:51Mike Smith?

I have, I do actually have a couple that I wanted to, I have an overrated one, then a couple underrated, okay? Well, this one, actually, this one's not gonna be that interesting to Wes, but one of my things that I think have always thought was underrated, so, in the Super Nintendo: Link to the Past Legend of Zelda game, it's always been a little bit of a sore spot for fans of the series that that Link had pink hair. And I've always thought it was like actually a really cool detail, and I was like, it makes him so unique, and I think it actually looks really cool, and it makes him just like a distinct sprite on the screen. I was like, Jeff's got pink hair now, we gotta talk about this, because I just think generally now, pink hair is cool. It turns out in the real world, it's cool too, not just video games.

• 1:25:34Jeff Larson?

I've, I've been loving it. The first week, I had some real anxiety going out in public. Not that I thought it looked bad, it's just like, I didn't wanna stand out, which is like a weird thing to say for someone who just dyed their hair pink.

• 1:25:47Mike Smith?

  Right. Yeah.

• 1:25:48Jeff Larson?

But now I'm gotten over that.

• 1:25:51Mike Smith?

Do people talk to you about it? Do they approach you?

• 1:25:54Jeff Larson?

Yeah, and like the gas station a block away from me where I like get snacks and drinks like almost daily.

• 1:26:01Mike Smith?

  Uh huh.

• 1:26:02Jeff Larson?

Half the employees have colored hair.

• 1:26:04Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:05Jeff Larson?

So it's kind of like they feel like they can just strike up conversation with me now, which is a little annoying.

• 1:26:11Mike Smith?

It is kind of a like, yeah, but you're like part of a club, which is.

• 1:26:14Jeff Larson?

Yeah, and I like call them twin and stuff.

• 1:26:17Mike Smith?

Yeah, I just, I've always thought it was really dumb how like basically every content creator that talks about Zelda, and there's a lot of them that do it for like literally that's their job is to like make Zelda videos on YouTube. They all hate the pink hair on Link and it's like, why? Why? It's like kind of cool to me. It always has been.

• 1:26:35Jeff Larson?

  Like one time, yeah.

• 1:26:37Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:38Wes Larson?

Jeff's looks cool, especially now that it's grown out a little bit too.

• 1:26:41Mike Smith?

The roots are a little, yeah, it looks sweet.

• 1:26:43Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:43Jeff Larson?

Do you have like an athlete right now who you think's the most overrated?

• 1:26:48Mike Smith?

Is Jalen Hurts kind of gonna be that guy for me?

• 1:26:51Jeff Larson?

Oh, I'm, I think he's underrated. I think he's like as good as any quarterback.

• 1:26:56Mike Smith?

Really? Is he passing better? Cause the first like few games, he was just wasn't even throwing the ball at all.

• 1:27:01Jeff Larson?

  Yeah, they didn't.

• 1:27:03Mike Smith?

  Okay, good.

• 1:27:04Jeff Larson?

He has like, yeah, he has some of the most passing yards.

• 1:27:08Mike Smith?

I'll go with Austin Reeves. Shoots thirty free throws.

• 1:27:11Jeff Larson?

I think I might go Anthony Edwards. Like I think he's really good, but not like the next face of the league.

• 1:27:18Mike Smith?

Sure. Yeah, I think that's fair.

• 1:27:19Jeff Larson?

Like I think he's like Donovan Mitchell type player.

• 1:27:22Mike Smith?

  Mm hmm. Okay.

• 1:27:23Jeff Larson?

  All right, Wes.

• 1:27:24Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:25Jeff Larson?

We're, we're going to a category now that you're here. That was just us filling space, but most overrated thing.

• 1:27:32Wes Larson?

I gotta tell you what was just happening. So we have three horses. We have Guapo, who's older, Itchy, who's really new. And then Kev, who's really older and tiny, and Kev has been sick for a while and probably not going to last too much longer. And Itchy was just like kicking him and jumping on him and like making him run all over and his feet are very tender. So I had to run out and separate him.

• 1:27:55Jeff Larson?

  Oh man.

• 1:27:56Wes Larson?

Yeah, poor little guy. He's limping around now.

• 1:27:58Mike Smith?

  Sorry Kevin.

• 1:27:59Wes Larson?

Yeah. Anyway, uh, overrated. Is that what it is? Something overrated?

• 1:28:04Mike Smith?

  Yes.

• 1:28:05Wes Larson?

Um, I'm gonna go ahead and say one that's gonna be a little.

• 1:28:11Wes Larson?

Itchy's beautiful, but he is kind of a handful. Uh, something a little controversial that a lot of people aren't gonna agree with me on. And that's that I think soup is overrated.

• 1:28:21Jeff Larson?

  Oh, wow. Yeah.

• 1:28:22Mike Smith?

  What the heck?

• 1:28:22Jeff Larson?

  I disagree.

• 1:28:23Wes Larson?

Yeah. Yeah. I feel like it's rare that I get soup that I'm just, that I really like it. And it usually fills me up enough that I don't want ever, I don't want whatever comes next. So I don't really like it as like a entree. And then for a meal, it's not filling enough for me, if that makes sense.

• 1:28:41Mike Smith?

  Okay.

• 1:28:42Wes Larson?

It doesn't. I know I'm, I'm kinda contradicting myself there.

• 1:28:45Jeff Larson?

  I get what you're saying.

• 1:28:46Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:46Jeff Larson?

Like a salad before your meal, it doesn't like ruin your meal coming up, but a soup, you get too full.

• 1:28:53Wes Larson?

Yeah. And I think if I'm really cold, I would rather just have like a hot beverage than a hot soup.

• 1:29:00Mike Smith?

  Okay.

• 1:29:00Wes Larson?

But I do like certain soups and I tend to like thicker soups, like a potato soup or a split pea soup or something like that, a creamier soup. But, uh, I'm not a huge soup guy.

• 1:29:10Mike Smith?

  My follow up.

• 1:29:11Wes Larson?

I'm just not a big soup guy.

• 1:29:12Jeff Larson?

  Alright.

• 1:29:13Mike Smith?

You're not a big any guy. You're a little guy.

• 1:29:16Wes Larson?

I'm smaller. I'm on the smaller side.

• 1:29:18Mike Smith?

  Like a little soup guy.

• 1:29:19Wes Larson?

  I wouldn't say I'm little.

• 1:29:21Jeff Larson?

One, I think you found one most people would disagree with, which is like kinda the good way to do it. Uh, I went with Jake from State Farm. Just like, I don't think he's ever really had a good moment. Like the original Jake's commercial is funny.

• 1:29:36Wes Larson?

Yeah. It's kinda like, how did that, how did it last this long? Why do we still have this?

• 1:29:41Jeff Larson?

Like, why are we, like Flo has had a couple commercials make me laugh. I don't think Jake ever has.

• 1:29:48Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:48Jeff Larson?

The first guy wasn't an actor. He was like an actual State Farm employee that they just used for that one commercial and the joke was funny.

• 1:29:57Mike Smith?

Okay. His khaki pants, that was funny.

• 1:29:59Jeff Larson?

I mean, I don't, I don't have anything against Jake. No. But I just think his writing maybe.

• 1:30:07Mike Smith?

Yeah, he needs better, better writing room.

• 1:30:09Wes Larson?

Like getting his bag, you know?

• 1:30:11Mike Smith?

  Sure.

• 1:30:11Jeff Larson?

  Me and Mike saw him.

• 1:30:13Wes Larson?

  Dollars. Yeah.

• 1:30:14Mike Smith?

  We did, yeah.

• 1:30:15Jeff Larson?

At a Chargers game. Everyone was going crazy.

• 1:30:18Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:19Wes Larson?

That is like a little niche celebrity to get a photo with or something.

• 1:30:23Jeff Larson?

You know what? I hope he never gets fired because

• 1:30:26Wes Larson?

  Me too.

• 1:30:27Jeff Larson?

Everyone recognizes him. So like, he has like that celebrity thing where people want pictures with him. But then he doesn't get like the benefits of being a celebrity, really.

• 1:30:39Mike Smith?

  Right.

• 1:30:39Jeff Larson?

Like if he got fired and just had to take pictures with everyone and couldn't go in public, but it's just Jake from State Farm.

• 1:30:48Wes Larson?

And he's not gonna get like other gigs like that. Yeah.

• 1:30:52Jeff Larson?

Alright. Oh Mike, do you have one?

• 1:30:55Mike Smith?

I say this is gonna piss a lot of people off too, but I think crossbows are overrated.

• 1:31:00Wes Larson?

  Yeah, I'm with you there.

• 1:31:02Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:02Wes Larson?

Like, real bow and arrows are so much cooler than your crossbow.

• 1:31:05Mike Smith?

They're like beautiful and elegant and like way cooler.

• 1:31:08Wes Larson?

Like just get a gun if you're gonna get a crossbow.

• 1:31:10Mike Smith?

That's the thing. You have to like, it takes like 10 minutes to reload them and you have to like step on it and pull the thing back. And it's like not that, I don't think it's even much stronger than a bow at all. Might not even be as strong. Yeah, they're just like the, like a noob weapon, you know? You gotta train for forever to be awesome with a bow.

• 1:31:27Jeff Larson?

Guns were like a big thing. That's when crossbows were cool.

• 1:31:31Wes Larson?

Yeah, they shoot bolts, which is dumb.

• 1:31:33Mike Smith?

Bolts? Yeah, call them an arrow. That's, I don't know, you trying to be special, calling them a bolt?

• 1:31:38Jeff Larson?

Like in Game of Thrones, having a crossbow, it's like, yeah, that's kinda cool. Like Joffrey.

• 1:31:44Wes Larson?

  That guy was cool.

• 1:31:44Mike Smith?

  No, that's what I'm saying.

• 1:31:46Wes Larson?

It was still like the cowards that use them in Game of Thrones.

• 1:31:49Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:51Mike Smith?

  Bows are, bows are cool.

• 1:31:52Jeff Larson?

I'm saying though it made sense then, now it doesn't really make sense because you could have a gun.

• 1:31:58Mike Smith?

To use it. I mean, that doesn't make sense to really use a bow and arrow either, does it? I guess hunters.

• 1:32:03Jeff Larson?

It's more traditional feeling than a crossbow.

• 1:32:07Mike Smith?

  Exactly.

• 1:32:07Jeff Larson?

Um, with zombies, it makes sense.

• 1:32:11Mike Smith?

  Okay.

• 1:32:12Jeff Larson?

Cause the gun makes a lot of noise and brings in more. So a crossbow, it's like you don't make any noise, you kill him. It's better than bow and arrow. Yeah. Daryl, Daryl has a crossbow. He's pretty quick with it.

• 1:32:26Wes Larson?

There's a, there's this video of this guy online that I don't know his name, but it's this trick bow and arrow guy. It's the most incredible video I've ever seen in my entire life. Where this guy can shoot so fast and so accurately with his bow. It absolutely blew me away. So look it up sometime because it, it makes you think like.

• 1:32:51Jeff Larson?

Take it and I'm gonna make AI make it like 20% faster.

• 1:32:55Wes Larson?

  Don't do it.

• 1:32:58Wes Larson?

I'm sure it already exists, but man, it is so cool. So look it up.

• 1:33:02Jeff Larson?

My video gets so many views when I make it just a little bit faster even.

• 1:33:09Jeff Larson?

Best recent animal you've seen in TV, movies, or pop culture?

• 1:33:14Mike Smith?

Uh, I had, I told Wes to watch Invasion of the Body Snatchers recently and there's a dog that gets a human face on it, in it. And it parts, it's so cool. And it, it like runs out and it's weird because it looks re, like super realistic somehow. I think it was just a mask that they put over the head of a dog. But there's this shot where its tongue flicks out of the mouth and it looks really just oddly realistic to me. And it's just like my favorite part of that movie. Unless did he neglected to even bring it up when we talked about the movie.

• 1:33:45Jeff Larson?

  I know.

• 1:33:45Wes Larson?

  It's great.

• 1:33:48Wes Larson?

We just watched Good Boy, which is about a dog that's like seeing ghosts. And it features like a pretty singular performance by a dog. I just, and the dog was so cute. It just was a dog that I just wanted to like take into my house because he's going through all this terrible stuff and I just wanted him to like be happy. But, uh, I, I really liked that dog in that movie. So that was my.

• 1:34:12Jeff Larson?

  Your house has ghosts.

• 1:34:13Wes Larson?

It might, but my house is a great spot for a dog.

• 1:34:16Jeff Larson?

Yeah. I'm gonna go with Eagly from, uh, Peacemaker. Peacemaker. Yeah. Peacemaker. Uh, just a sweet sidekick animal to have, you know?

• 1:34:28Wes Larson?

So. And shout out them. They used the right like animal noises for a bald eagle. They didn't use a red-tailed hawk.

• 1:34:36Jeff Larson?

Yeah. There you go. Nice job. Uh, James Gunn. All right. Next one.

• 1:34:42Jeff Larson?

You think that is a John Cena moment? He is like, hey guys.

• 1:34:46Mike Smith?

I think he made the call. He was like, no, we gotta have a real eagle noise. Real ball.

• 1:34:51Jeff Larson?

I have some listener questions. From hi Lizays. Is Jeff actually a huge gun guy or is that a bit? Uh, no, I mean, you ask me any type of gun, Wes.

• 1:35:05Wes Larson?

  He'll say it. Yeah.

• 1:35:06Jeff Larson?

  Uh, ask me any type.

• 1:35:08Wes Larson?

  A big one.

• 1:35:09Jeff Larson?

  Big gun bazooka.

• 1:35:10Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:10Mike Smith?

  There we go.

• 1:35:12Jeff Larson?

Mike asked me any type of gun.

• 1:35:15Mike Smith?

  A little gun.

• 1:35:16Jeff Larson?

Um, uh, uh, no, magnums are big. Like a.

• 1:35:21Wes Larson?

  PB7?

• 1:35:23Jeff Larson?

  Well, you took it.

• 1:35:27Mike Smith?

But this is the kind of expertise you can expect out of it. He wants to be.

• 1:35:30Jeff Larson?

Little purse gun, little gun in your purse.

• 1:35:33Mike Smith?

  Yeah, right. See?

• 1:35:34Wes Larson?

  Right.

• 1:35:35Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:35Jeff Larson?

  Purse gun.

• 1:35:36Wes Larson?

  Okay.

• 1:35:36Mike Smith?

He's got it like, like that. He's got it just right at the top.

• 1:35:39Wes Larson?

That should answer your question. Yep.

• 1:35:41Jeff Larson?

Um. Heather XXS asks, what's one thing you'll never do again? Wes is Panda Express.

• 1:35:50Wes Larson?

  Uh. Yeah, honestly.

• 1:35:53Mike Smith?

Yeah, we know how he feels about it.

• 1:35:55Jeff Larson?

Danielle too. She just got really sick from it.

• 1:35:59Wes Larson?

  Probably never be religious again.

• 1:36:01Jeff Larson?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:36:02Mike Smith?

I think I'm never gonna bungee jump ever again. I was really feeling torn in two directions when we were, we went bungee jumping off this really big bridge.

• 1:36:09Jeff Larson?

  Physically.

• 1:36:10Mike Smith?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:13Mike Smith?

But we went off, I don't know how, how high that jump was.

• 1:36:16Wes Larson?

It was like 300 something. Yeah.

• 1:36:18Mike Smith?

It was really, it was a big one. And I was like, well, I'm either, I've done about as big as I'll ever do it. Or I'll just need to like really commit and become like serious about bungee jumping. Because it was fun, but I don't think I'm ever gonna have a better opportunity than that one. So I was like, I think I've just reached my peak as a bungee jumper off that bridge.

• 1:36:39Jeff Larson?

It really hurt me. Like they put it on my shins instead of my ankles. And it's just like so much pressure on my shins.

• 1:36:47Wes Larson?

Yeah. Yeah. It, it wasn't nearly as fun as this swing that they were doing off the bridge.

• 1:36:52Jeff Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:52Mike Smith?

Man, the swing was so much more pleasant.

• 1:36:54Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:55Jeff Larson?

Yeah, no, that's good. What's something I'll never do again?

• 1:36:59Wes Larson?

I don't know, this was your category.

• 1:37:01Jeff Larson?

  No, it's not a category, it's a listener question.

• 1:37:03Wes Larson?

  Oh, listener question.

• 1:37:04Mike Smith?

  Like Elvis Costello?

• 1:37:05Wes Larson?

  Um, hmm.

• 1:37:07Jeff Larson?

You didn't, I gave you yours, right? Did you say one, Wes?

• 1:37:11Wes Larson?

I said, probably never be religious again.

• 1:37:14Jeff Larson?

Oh, yeah. Um, I mean, I could, could take that one.

• 1:37:20Wes Larson?

  Could.

• 1:37:22Mike Smith?

Never gonna, you'll never try meth again, right? After that one, after the incident?

• 1:37:27Wes Larson?

  Never watch, never watch Paranormal.

• 1:37:30Mike Smith?

I guess Adderall is kinda, yeah.

• 1:37:32Jeff Larson?

Yeah, I wouldn't, I, maybe, uh, damn, I'm sorry, I'm blanking, guys. I do never do any more activity.

• 1:37:39Mike Smith?

Elementary school, my hope, I hope you never go back, one of those.

• 1:37:45Jeff Larson?

Um, alright, Becca's Killin' asks, is there any animal you would suggest not using bear spray on? I carry it hiking everywhere.

• 1:37:55Mike Smith?

  No. Like your pet lizard?

• 1:37:57Wes Larson?

There's definitely animals that, yeah, oh, actually, you know what, a rattlesnake, don't use it on a rattlesnake. That's the one I would suggest, or a shark, sure.

• 1:38:06Mike Smith?

Or one of those dogs that like a, like a comfort support dog?

• 1:38:10Wes Larson?

Yeah, don't use it on someone's dog, uh, unless it's attacking.

• 1:38:13Mike Smith?

  Like on the airplane?

• 1:38:14Wes Larson?

Uh, it works pretty well on all mammals. There's some mammals that it's gonna be less effective, like probably a bison, it's not gonna be as effective, but it would probably still work, so. But I wouldn't use it on any reptiles or any fish.

• 1:38:27Jeff Larson?

I, I don't think I'll ever share a room again, like, as a roommate, shared room.

• 1:38:32Wes Larson?

That's a good answer, I won't ever do that either.

• 1:38:35Jeff Larson?

As a roommate, I wouldn't call wife a roommate, but, you know?

• 1:38:39Mike Smith?

On a technical level, I think.

• 1:38:41Jeff Larson?

If my wife was on board for like the separate bedrooms thing, I'd be so happy.

• 1:38:45Wes Larson?

It's not a bad idea, yeah.

• 1:38:48Jeff Larson?

  I like sleeping alone.

• 1:38:50Wes Larson?

Yeah, I do too, but there are nights where it's just like so nice to curl up next to someone else. So.

• 1:38:57Jeff Larson?

  Um.

• 1:38:58Wes Larson?

  That's someone being Jesse.

• 1:39:00Jeff Larson?

Emerson asks, will you all ever come to New Zealand? Mike?

• 1:39:05Mike Smith?

Hey, I would, I mean, I've been once now and I'd love to go back. It was an amazing place. I had a great time. I was only there for like three days.

• 1:39:13Wes Larson?

  The Shire.

• 1:39:14Mike Smith?

  Yeah, Shireton.

• 1:39:15Wes Larson?

  The Hobbiton.

• 1:39:16Jeff Larson?

  The Sheraton.

• 1:39:17Mike Smith?

  Hobbiton.

• 1:39:17Wes Larson?

  Sheraton.

• 1:39:18Mike Smith?

I went to the Green Dragon and I had a pint and a big ol' scone.

• 1:39:23Wes Larson?

I really wanna go. I, you know what? I'm not like too interested in New Zealand outside of that, but I really wanna see all of the.

• 1:39:31Jeff Larson?

There's not like too much wildlife that seems interesting.

• 1:39:35Wes Larson?

Yeah, it just really feels a lot like Montana, you know? It doesn't feel that different, but I do really wanna go there.

• 1:39:41Mike Smith?

No way. Montana has nothing compared to Milford Sound.

• 1:39:45Wes Larson?

  Sure.

• 1:39:45Mike Smith?

  Milford Sound?

• 1:39:47Wes Larson?

  It is a great name.

• 1:39:49Mike Smith?

  You got nothing like that.

• 1:39:50Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:51Jeff Larson?

  It'd be a good like.

• 1:39:52Mike Smith?

  It is awesome.

• 1:39:53Jeff Larson?

  Kayaking, fly fishing place.

• 1:39:56Wes Larson?

It would, but so is Montana.

• 1:39:58Jeff Larson?

  Nah.

• 1:39:58Mike Smith?

I love the people there. There is some of the most pleasant people I've ever interacted with.

• 1:40:02Wes Larson?

Yeah. Every New Zealander I've met has been really nice.

• 1:40:06Jeff Larson?

Mediocre Magic wants to ask, what's the best roller coaster ride you've ever been on?

• 1:40:13Wes Larson?

Mine honestly might be Cannibal at Lagunitas.

• 1:40:16Jeff Larson?

Cannibal and Buffalo Bills for me and Buffalo Bills is out of order forever.

• 1:40:21Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:22Mike Smith?

I forget, there were two in Busch Gardens in Florida. That place was just like the best to go when I was little, but they had two, there was an Egyptian themed one and then one called, I think, Black Panther or something Cougar, Puma, I don't know. Um, one of those two, I'll go with the Egyptian one. I like that one so much. I'd forced my dad to buy me like a little Egyptian rod, like one of those ritual, like wooden rod thing.

• 1:40:48Wes Larson?

  This was two years ago.

• 1:40:49Mike Smith?

  I still have it.

• 1:40:50Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:50Mike Smith?

Yeah, two, two years ago. Shout out dad, man.

• 1:40:54Jeff Larson?

I, I'm interested what you guys think of this one. Elijah Mo asks, when have you been the most proud of yourself in your life? Hmm.

• 1:41:03Mike Smith?

There's this one time we were in an airport in India and I really kept my cool in a situation that really...

• 1:41:11Jeff Larson?

  That's crazy.

• 1:41:13Mike Smith?

I didn't even say anything to that guy, Jeff.

• 1:41:15Jeff Larson?

  You were losing it.

• 1:41:15Mike Smith?

  Not a word to him.

• 1:41:17Wes Larson?

Maybe when the Nat Geo article came out, or when we were on This American Life, those were two times that I was very proud. But honestly, and like this is gonna sound like kind of a simpering answer, but like getting messages from people saying that their kids wanna be wildlife biologists, or look up to us, or have like decided that they really care about the natural world because of our show, is, always fills me with like a really big sense of pride. So that's, that's up there for me. Someone recently told me I was their Steve Irwin and it like really hit hard.

• 1:41:52Jeff Larson?

  Yeah, that's great.

• 1:41:53Wes Larson?

Yeah, so that sort of thing.

• 1:41:54Jeff Larson?

Yeah, someone wrote me and said like, I never even responded to him. I'm sorry. I hope they're listening. But they said that I was like the funniest person to them of like any person, even like comedians. And that was like, I was pretty proud of myself for that.

• 1:42:11Mike Smith?

I find there's this, whenever, and it's rare, I think, to have moments of genuine altruism when you do something good for somebody else for the right reasons. And it's those moments where you look back on like volunteering on a random weekend to help somebody move, or like work in a food kitchen or something. Like that's just something I'll never, ever regret. And it's kind of weird to like look back on those and feel proud of myself, like, man, I'm such an awesome and good person. But like, I don't know. It, I guess that is kind of what I'm feeling in a way, but just a really, like the sense of like, I'm contributing to humanity. I'm not just like a leech, you know?

• 1:42:50Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

Yours should be when you beat that video game where you had to swim through the spikes.

• 1:42:56Mike Smith?

Oh, Alex Kidd in Miracle World?

• 1:42:58Jeff Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:42:58Mike Smith?

Okay. Yeah, the very end of Alex Kidd.

• 1:43:00Jeff Larson?

Who were you playing that with?

• 1:43:02Mike Smith?

Brent. We played that game for like 72 hours straight, trying to get through that little water part.

• 1:43:09Jeff Larson?

Maybe when we beat the Dallas Mavericks in NBA Jam, that was like, that took a long time.

• 1:43:19Wes Larson?

I'm the only person I've ever met that's beat the game Battletoads. And I'm pretty proud of myself for that.

• 1:43:25Mike Smith?

I honestly like, I am proud of you for that, but I don't believe you.

• 1:43:30Wes Larson?

  That's fine.

• 1:43:30Mike Smith?

I don't believe anyone's ever beaten that game.

• 1:43:31Wes Larson?

I can tell you what the last level looks like right now. It's the spinning tower that you have to get up and you attack the like the woman with the boobs.

• 1:43:39Mike Smith?

  Yeah, yeah, rack.

• 1:43:41Wes Larson?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:42Jeff Larson?

I beat it. I, I think that does it.

• 1:43:44Mike Smith?

  That's amazing.

• 1:43:46Mike Smith?

The biggest accomplishment anyone's ever, yeah, whatever.

• 1:43:49Wes Larson?

Yeah. Uh, well, thanks, guys. Thank you, everyone, for story submissions. Uh, thank you especially to our subscribers. We love you so much. Ah, we love you. Uh, all right. Well, I'll see you guys in a couple of days in Costa Rica.
