This is episode number 469 with the Latin music pop star sensation, J Balvin.

• 0:08Lewis Howes?

Welcome to the School of Greatness. My name is Lewis Howes, a former pro athlete turned lifestyle entrepreneur. And each week, we bring you an inspiring person or message to help you discover how to unlock your inner greatness. Thanks for spending some time with me today. Now let the class begin.

• 0:34Lewis Howes?

We have a very special guest today. I had an amazing time connecting with my man J Balvin, who is in the Greatness Studio today. And what a journey this human has had over the years. I am so excited to hear his story and share it with you because he's overcome some incredible adversities. Growing up, some incredible adversities early in his career where people said he wasn't going to make it and they actually laughed at him. And then he came back and has been described by Billboard as the greatest discovery of Latin music in many years. Now, this has recently been confirmed when he was honored at the Billboard Latin Music Awards in the categories of Artist's Debut of the Year, Latin Rhythm Song of the Year,

• 1:19Lewis Howes?

and Latin Rhythm Songs Artist of the Year. In addition to the success achieved with his own music, J Balvin has become the name to take into account when thinking about collaborations. Now, he has been called to work on remixes in Spanish with names like Justin Bieber, Pharrell, Ariana Grande, Maroon 5, and many others. And he has toured with Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull. I love this story. And some of the main things we talk about in this interview are how getting into a terrible plane crash inspired J Balvin to do more with his work, and why it really woke him up. Why having a dream is so key and essential to your own success. Without a dream, it's hard to be successful.

• 2:05Lewis Howes?

How to hustle when you're working solo and don't have a team, and there are some amazing... Amazing stories about how Jay Balvin explained how he was about 10 people in one in the first few years of his career, the way gratitude works to create abundance in your life, how to develop confidence in yourself before you're successful, and so much more, guys. There's so many great lessons in this interview. Please share it out with your friends. LewisHowes.com/469. This is going to be a powerful one for so many people that listen. And before we dive in, want to make sure I give a shout out to the review of the week over on iTunes. This is from Nate, who says, "Been listening to Lewis for about a year now,

• 2:48Lewis Howes?

and love everything about this podcast. I only listen to about five separate podcasts, and this is one of my weekly personal development staples. I use it for during my commutes and also during workouts. And as an ex-pro athlete myself, I love to see what he's done with his life and how he's transitioned to dominating the entrepreneur's world as well. So many athletes struggle to find their purpose after sports, and I'm following in your shoes, Lewis. Meet you at the top." Nate Forsey, thank you so much for leaving the review. You are the review of the week. And if you haven't left a review yet, please go to iTunes.com/greatness and leave one right now. All right, guys, let's dive in. I'm super pumped about this. Again, make sure

• 3:29Lewis Howes?

to share it out with your friends while you're listening, and give it up for the one, the only, Jay Balvin. Welcome, everyone, back to the School of Greatness podcast. Very excited about our guest today, Jay Balvin in the house. Good to see you, man.

• 3:46Speaker 01

Good to see you too. Finally, man.

• 3:47Lewis Howes?

I'm super excited. I didn't really know who you were until a few months ago. And then I think you followed me originally on Instagram. And I was like, who is this guy? And then I started devouring your music, fell in love. I actually had heard your music before. I just didn't know you were the one singing, and it was your stuff. But you did the The Justin Bieber Sorry remake.

• 4:07Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 4:07Lewis Howes?

  In Spanish.

• 4:08Speaker 01

  Yeah, the only remix that.

• 4:09Lewis Howes?

  The only remix.

• 4:10Speaker 01

  They put out, yeah.

• 4:11Lewis Howes?

And I listened to that like on a repeat every day.

• 4:13Speaker 01

  Shout out to Scooter.

• 4:14Lewis Howes?

Yeah, shout out to Scooter Rod. And um, so it was cool to kind of like go back and start listening to everything and I've just devoured your music. So it's amazing. You've got a song called I Vamos, right? That's got over a billion views.

• 4:26Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 4:27Lewis Howes?

Billion views on YouTube, I Vamos. That's like Bieber style.

• 4:30Speaker 01

That's a blessing, man. We just, amazing. That's like seven people in the world that has reached.

• 4:35Lewis Howes?

Over a billion. Who's that? Bieber?

• 4:37Speaker 01

  Bieber.

• 4:38Lewis Howes?

  Taylor Swift?

• 4:39Speaker 01

  Yes, Taylor.

• 4:40Lewis Howes?

  Psy?

• 4:41Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 4:42Lewis Howes?

  Gangnam Style, right?

• 4:43Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 4:43Lewis Howes?

  And what else?

• 4:44Speaker 01

All those big superstar. I'm the only one that is not a big superstar, but I got my billion views.

• 4:49Lewis Howes?

That's crazy. Did you get some award from YouTube for that or do they?

• 4:52Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, absolutely.

• 4:53Lewis Howes?

What did they give you? Like a little placard?

• 4:55Speaker 01

Yes, they gave, they gave us some love. But you know, at the end of the day, it's, the important thing is like, people is showing love.

• 5:01Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 5:02Speaker 01

They're really showing love and they really want, they really want to see what we're doing and feeling our vibe.

• 5:08Lewis Howes?

That's amazing, man. Now, you're, you're from Colombia. How do I say it? Colombia or Culumia?

• 5:12Speaker 01

  No, Colombia.

• 5:13Lewis Howes?

  Colombia.

• 5:13Speaker 01

Yeah, because there's a lot of people that, when they write Colombia, they say Colombia. It's not like Colombia from here. It's Colombia.

• 5:20Lewis Howes?

  Colombia.

• 5:20Speaker 01

  C O L O M V I A.

• 5:23Lewis Howes?

  There you go.

• 5:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, Colombia.

• 5:24Lewis Howes?

Now, I play with the USA National Handball Team, Team Handball.

• 5:28Speaker 01

  I bet, man, you big.

• 5:31Lewis Howes?

And a year ago, I was in Buenos Aires and um, for a tournament and we played against Colombia.

• 5:37Speaker 01

So you played that, you dance salsa, man. What did you do?

• 5:39Lewis Howes?

Yeah, yeah. I mean, I used to play football, yeah, do acro yoga, play guitar, a little guitar.

• 5:44Speaker 01

  Okay, I do that too.

• 5:45Lewis Howes?

  Do you?

• 5:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 5:46Lewis Howes?

Oh, I should, we should get the cart, guitar and afterwards and see what you can do. Alright, cool. Um, but we played Colombia and uh, we beat you guys, so I apologize.

• 5:53Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 5:54Lewis Howes?

Apologize, but you guys beat us pretty much like soccer and all the other sports, so.

• 5:58Speaker 01

  Okay, okay.

• 5:59Lewis Howes?

You know, um, but I've always wanted to visit. You've told me how amazing it is before here, so one day I'll come and visit you and watch you.

• 6:06Speaker 01

I already told you, you're super invited, man.

• 6:08Lewis Howes?

I appreciate it, I appreciate it.

• 6:09Speaker 01

  We got you.

• 6:09Lewis Howes?

I appreciate it, I'm sure you do. Now, um, you moved to the US when you were sixteen, seventeen, right? From Colombia. You didn't speak English before then.

• 6:19Speaker 01

  Not at all.

• 6:20Lewis Howes?

And why did you move to the US? You moved to Oklahoma and why there?

• 6:24Speaker 01

Well, I didn't, I didn't choose Oklahoma. I think, I think Oklahoma chose me, yeah. You know, like, uh, I, I was looking for. You know, to be an exchange student.

• 6:36Lewis Howes?

  Oh, really?

• 6:37Speaker 01

Yeah, so uh. It was something like just random, you know, like they just. Just, I don't know, they put your name, maybe they put your name in a box and be like, okay. Jose is going to Oklahoma. Atoka, that was the name of the town.

• 6:51Lewis Howes?

  Really, small town probably, right?

• 6:52Speaker 01

  Super small.

• 6:53Lewis Howes?

  Twenty thousand people.

• 6:54Speaker 01

I I I think this is, this is the town right here.

• 6:58Lewis Howes?

  Sure.

• 6:58Speaker 01

  Yeah, so.

• 6:59Lewis Howes?

So you went through your junior year or senior year?

• 7:02Speaker 01

That was uh, that was senior year.

• 7:05Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 7:05Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 7:06Lewis Howes?

No English, a few words maybe.

• 7:08Speaker 01

Yeah, you know, I was been, you know, I was listening to hip hop since I was a little kid and listened to. Uh, rock and heavy metal, so. I had, I I I thought that I, you know, I have some ideas, but when I got there, well, I'm lost.

• 7:23Lewis Howes?

And you have to listen in class and like study and try to figure out what people are saying and learn.

• 7:27Speaker 01

Yeah, you know, like, I think, I think that was really, you know, it was really a blessing because you have to. There's no other way, you have to learn how.

• 7:36Lewis Howes?

  Have to figure it out.

• 7:37Speaker 01

  Yeah, you have to.

• 7:37Lewis Howes?

  Survive.

• 7:38Speaker 01

How to express yourself, even with your hands or whatever, you know, somebody will help you like.

• 7:46Speaker 01

  Spoon?

• 7:46Lewis Howes?

  Yeah. Exactly.

• 7:48Speaker 01

  Eat, okay, eat, yeah.

• 7:50Lewis Howes?

  That's funny, man.

• 7:51Speaker 01

So, yeah, went there and uh.

• 7:53Lewis Howes?

Why did you wanna go be an exchange student?

• 7:56Speaker 01

Because, you know, I, I think when you know English and that's basically is kind of like music. It's a universal language at the end of the day, you know, so. Uh, I wouldn't be here talking to you.

• 8:10Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, it's true.

• 8:11Speaker 01

  It'll be different.

• 8:12Lewis Howes?

It's funny, cause uh, uh, you know, Anita Nozario, who you know.

• 8:15Speaker 01

  Yeah, of course.

• 8:16Lewis Howes?

In um, Puerto Rico, he's like.

• 8:17Speaker 01

  Yeah, one of the biggest.

• 8:18Lewis Howes?

A goddess star there in Puerto Rico, uh, a good friend of mine is great friends with her. And I said I was interviewing you, cause I saw he posted a photo of you on on social media when he was at your show a couple nights ago in Puerto Rico. And I go, yeah, I'm having him on, he goes, he speaks English, he was like, it's shocking that you spoke English, and I was like, I'm pretty sure, you know. Um, so it's amazing, cause not many people from Colombia or artists, I'm assuming they don't speak English, like you do.

• 8:42Speaker 01

Well, I don't know, I just. It depends if you really wanna conquer the world or not. You know, like, it depends how you.

• 8:54Speaker 01

Like all the biggest guys that I always dream to meet or you know or to be like them. Basically, they all, most of them are all from here.

• 9:04Lewis Howes?

  Hmm.

• 9:04Speaker 01

You know, like Pharrell Williams or you know, like even even Scooter Brown, you know, people that I really like. Like I really admire and say, wow, how nice they are. When I was a kid, we're like, okay, how am I, how am I gonna talk to them? That they admit, you know, they are just gonna have them in front of me.

• 9:25Lewis Howes?

  Hmm.

• 9:26Speaker 01

What I'm gonna do, speak in Spanish, what if they don't know?

• 9:29Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, get a translator.

• 9:30Speaker 01

Yeah, that's not gonna be cool. So I'm like, you know, if I really wanna conquer the world one day and just. Try to express what's my point of view, because I don't have to sing in in English. You know, because it's it's all about the right vibes, you know. But when it comes to really express myself, what's my message to the world? I have to.

• 9:51Lewis Howes?

Yeah, of course. What is your message to the world? What's your vision?

• 9:55Speaker 01

  Well.

• 9:55Lewis Howes?

For why you do all this?

• 9:57Speaker 01

Um, definitely, I think, you know, I just, I had a, like, six months ago, I had a airplane crash.

• 10:05Lewis Howes?

  Really?

• 10:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:07Lewis Howes?

Like a private plane or is this?

• 10:08Speaker 01

Yeah. And uh, everybody in that island, like, uh, we were the only survivors. From all the airplane crashes that had happened over there.

• 10:20Lewis Howes?

  Wow, where was this?

• 10:22Speaker 01

  That was in Bahamas.

• 10:23Lewis Howes?

  Bahamas?

• 10:24Speaker 01

  Yeah, Bahamas, yeah.

• 10:25Lewis Howes?

How many people were on the plane?

• 10:26Speaker 01

We were, we were six and.

• 10:29Lewis Howes?

  You all survived?

• 10:30Speaker 01

Yes, and not even one scratch. And everybody died, like, you know, when I got out from the plane. You know, the plane was caught up on fire and and we all were alive and I was like, why?

• 10:45Speaker 01

So when I started like running to the FBO, I was like, I told them a story, they were like, you're lucky because everybody died, you know, like the last seven airplane crashes that they had there, everybody died.

• 10:59Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 10:59Speaker 01

So there's no, there's no, there's no coincidence. I think life is perfect, man. So I remember that Farrelly Williams called me that day and was like, listen, there's no, life has no mistakes. It's perfect and you're here because of reason. So he was like, what are the chances to be alive? And more from our airplane crash. So that's when I was like, hmm, okay. So I gotta, I still have something to do in this world. And, and I always knew it, but I, I was new, but now I'm like reassured that, you know, the message that I have to send the people is like, you've got a dream, you know,

• 11:40Speaker 01

you need a reason, a reason why, you know, to get up in the morning and say, okay, I'm, I'm, I'm gonna get this. This is what I want to. And dreams are beautiful, man, because they keep your, they keep you with hope. And when, when there's hope, there's a future. And that's, you know, that, I think that's the message, you know. Music, it's just the way I can get to the people and, and, and, and, and tell the story.

• 12:09Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 12:09Speaker 01

You know, like go and follow your dream. Everything is possible, you know. And the good thing about dreams is like, there, you know, there's no end, you know, you can dream as long as you want.

• 12:21Lewis Howes?

Yeah. Once you achieve one dream, it's another bigger dream.

• 12:24Speaker 01

Another one and another one and another one. And it doesn't matter how big they are. If they're small, small dreams or big dreams, they're all dreams and that's what it matters.

• 12:31Lewis Howes?

What's your dream right now? The big dream?

• 12:34Speaker 01

Well, one of my biggest dreams, I have a lot, you know, it depends. There's professional dreams, personal dreams, uh, spiritual dreams, you know, like I wanna have a family. That's one of my biggest dreams. But maybe it's not the moment right now. So that one I have to wait a little bit. But musically speaking, I think I really wanna. Conquer the world like at least the farthest I can get with in Spanish. You know, like I'm not in a hurry to do nothing in English, but I'm doing it too because for but more I'm doing it for fun. Yeah. You know, like um I'm not hungry to be famous. I think I wanna be successful, which is different. Because you can do any stupid thing and be famous in a second.

• 13:20Speaker 01

You know, kill somebody or say some stupid words, you know, be racist. You know, there's a lot of stupid things that there's a lot of famous stupid. To get attention, yeah. Yeah, so I wanna be successful and that takes more time. And at the end of the day, when you're really successful, people will know about it. Hmm. You know, even if they don't understand what you're saying, the music is gonna be so dope, they just gotta flow with it. Gotta move. Yeah. You know, it doesn't matter who you are. Absolutely. Amazing, man. What's the definition of success for you? Well, I think it's a good question right now. I think success is um feel proud of what you do.

• 14:04Speaker 01

And at the same thing, at the same time, you're inspiring people to make their own dream too. Yeah. You know, because there's no, there's no reason why, I mean, it's a lot of things right now in my mind, so I'll make some translations. It's okay. You know, but but what I think right now is like, what's the reason to be successful if you cannot share that with your people or your family or with the world? You know, like what you're gonna do, let's let's talk like money wise, for example, like what you're gonna do, you have ten million dollars in cash just for you. What are you gonna do with it? Like, what's the point? Once you got your house and you got. Yeah, but you're gonna be alone. Exactly.

• 14:49Speaker 01

Right? It's different to be with your family and you just share it and then you buy an airplane, just be with your people, your friends, your family and take them with you and show them the world how beautiful it is. You know, at least you gotta share. I think it's it's being successful is sharing and at the same time is giving them hope that if you make it, they can make it too. Hmm. I think that's. You know, a little bit of what I think has been successful.

• 15:17Lewis Howes?

  Mm hmm.

• 15:18Speaker 01

But I think there's a lot of ways to express that.

• 15:21Lewis Howes?

Of course, yeah. I mean, you know, I was just in Guatemala a couple of weeks ago, I was telling you, and everywhere we went in Guatemala, Christine was there, there was billboards of your face.

• 15:29Speaker 01

You got tired of me, like, oh my god.

• 15:31Lewis Howes?

Every mile was like a big billboard, a hundred foot photo of you. And, um, you know, you're like this mega star in Latin America and anywhere in a Spanish speaking country. And I think people are starting to know who you are here in the US more and more, but really you're just like well known there, which was hilarious for me to see. It was just like, oh yeah.

• 15:53Lewis Howes?

How do you handle that much attention? You know, you've got this big audience on social media, you know, every show you do is sold out at twenty, fifty thousand people, whatever it may be. You're collabing with Bieber and Pharrell and, you know, J Lo and all these other people. How do you stay humble and not allow yourself to get so caught up in the hype?

• 16:16Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 16:17Lewis Howes?

So that you can stay grounded and really committed to your vision?

• 16:20Speaker 01

Yeah, there's a lot of things, you know, like, I think family is really important, man, and the way they raise you. Education, that's what we need in the world, more education, you know, and, and, and, uh, and parents that really support their children's for their dreams.

• 16:38Lewis Howes?

  Mm hmm.

• 16:38Speaker 01

Because I think there's a lot of parents that maybe not,

• 16:46Speaker 01

how can I say that, like, they think they're doing it right for your, for the kids, but they're doing it wrong. And like, because they program their kids with their dreams.

• 16:55Lewis Howes?

  Hmm.

• 16:56Speaker 01

Not with the dreams they want, you know, get me?

• 17:00Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, of course.

• 17:01Speaker 01

  I'm being crazy?

• 17:01Lewis Howes?

  No, no, yeah, of course.

• 17:02Speaker 01

So, uh, my family, I remember, you know, when I decided to be an artist, my mom said like, I'll support you, but the day you want, the day you think you will start, you're gonna stop shining for me.

• 17:15Lewis Howes?

The day you think you're gonna start?

• 17:17Speaker 01

You're not gonna shine anymore for me.

• 17:19Lewis Howes?

What does that mean? The day you think you're gonna start?

• 17:20Speaker 01

The, the, the, the thing you, the day you think you are a star?

• 17:23Lewis Howes?

  A star.

• 17:24Speaker 01

  Yeah, a star?

• 17:24Lewis Howes?

You're not gonna shine more for me?

• 17:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:27Lewis Howes?

  That's powerful.

• 17:27Speaker 01

  That's like.

• 17:28Lewis Howes?

Whoa, your mom said it to you?

• 17:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:30Lewis Howes?

The day you think you're gonna, you're gonna be a star?

• 17:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:33Lewis Howes?

You're gonna stop shining for me?

• 17:35Speaker 01

Yeah. So I think that That's powerful. That was good. You got a good mom. I'm really grateful with that, yeah, because, yeah, I think. Wow, how old were you when she said this? I was like seventeen. When you moved to Oklahoma? Yeah, when I decided to be an artist. Really? Yeah. Why did you decide you wanted to be in music? Because I remember that I was studying, I was studying two careers at the same time. I was studying international business and how do you call it, like communications. So I remember that I was in the classroom and every time I, every time I was in this classroom, I was just

• 18:17Speaker 01

writing songs and thinking about how, how was the clothes that I wore about the world for the show. Really? So I was like, man, you know, my mom and my dad, they're making all this effort to pay, you know, my, my university and I'm here just like not caring about this class. Yeah. So I was like, you know what? Nah, this is not for me. Sure. And I remember a guy that is a really friend of mine and he approached to me, he was like, you think, you know Shakira? Oh, of course. Okay. Yeah, yips don't lie. Yeah. We had Wyclef here a few weeks ago, yeah, yeah. Okay, so.

• 18:59Speaker 01

He approached to me, he said like, you think Shakira or Juanes, which is another big artist? Juanes is amazing. Uh huh. Will be, will be here in this room? Yeah. He asked me that, I was like, no. I was like, no. In college, in university, yeah. And I was like, he was like, so what are you doing here? I was like, I'm out. Really? Yeah, I was, he asked me, I think he was an angel, man, he was an angel. Wow. Yeah. And what was, where did you, where were you going to school? What college was that? It was, the name is Airfield. In Colombia? Yeah, but I, I called her, I, you know what, I'm gonna be an artist. Wow. Forget about this. And I called my mom and I was like, mom, I gotta tell you something and um,

• 19:44Speaker 01

I don't know how you're gonna take this, but I wanna be, you know, an artist. And she was like, that's what you wanted to tell me? That's it?

• 19:53Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 19:54Speaker 01

Of course, I support you, you know, you can just be whatever you want, as long as you do it good. You know, you gotta be the best on what you do. I don't care if you wanna be a musician, if you wanna be a football players. Just be the best.

• 20:08Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 20:09Speaker 01

And that puts me more pressure, because usually when people don't believe in you, you just like, okay, I'm gonna show them that I got the skills. But they, when they really believe in you.

• 20:20Lewis Howes?

  They gotta show up.

• 20:21Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 20:22Lewis Howes?

  You gotta prove them right.

• 20:22Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 20:24Lewis Howes?

  Not prove them wrong.

• 20:25Speaker 01

Yes, so. That's how it started.

• 20:29Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 20:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:30Lewis Howes?

And who was more influential in your life, your mom or your dad growing up?

• 20:34Speaker 01

  My mom.

• 20:35Lewis Howes?

And what was the biggest lesson she taught you?

• 20:38Speaker 01

That we are, we are all the same, you know, like. He always told me like, my mom always told me like, if you, I don't know, if you're gonna meet Justin Bieber, for example, like, don't get scared. He's just like you. You know, he got, he got, he got fears, he got feelings. He got your, he got his doubts, you know, like, he didn't tell me about Justin, but it's for example, you know, like. Anybody, you can, you can meet the most powerful guy in the world and they just like you. So just don't believe that they're, you know, don't feel.

• 21:13Speaker 01

Don't feel like you're different. You're the same.

• 21:15Lewis Howes?

Right. And what was the biggest lesson your dad taught you?

• 21:18Speaker 01

My dad? Well, he never told me, but with, with the action, with his actions, I learned a lot, you know, he's a, he's a warrior, man, he's always. Working and. He inspired me a lot, you know, to be always like focused.

• 21:35Lewis Howes?

Yeah. Wow, so you left school and then what was the next step? Were you just like in the studio every day, were you trying to network with other artists?

• 21:44Speaker 01

Not, yeah, I was in the studio, you know, and. But I I thought it was too cool. You know, to be in Colombia, so I left Colombia and I went to Miami looking for the American dream. Sure. Which is being so tired and go back to bed.

• 22:03Speaker 01

So I started, you know, I went to Miami looking for a label. I didn't have no money. But that was no excuse. Because that's another thing that I want to tell where like. Don't make excuses when you really want something, you want to get it. You know, like I didn't have the money to fly to Miami at that time or to to have, you know. But when you really want something, you're gonna get it. There's no excuses. You know, so. So I wanted to go to Miami, I went to Miami. And I didn't have money, so I looked for a job. You know, but I was legal to work, you know, because I was with my tourist visa. You were legal. Yeah, I mean illegal because I I, you know, I'm not allowed to work. Yeah, I'm allowed to go on vacations.

• 22:48Speaker 01

Right. Oh, tourist visas. You weren't, so like a three month thing. Yeah, six months, they always give you six months. But you're not allowed to work, but I had to work. So what'd you do? I started painting houses. Uh, under the table, getting cash under the table. What's up? Yeah, of course. And um, yeah, I was I was working, man, I was working and looking for my, you know, like how to. You know, how to read and, you know, just keep looking for for. For connections for the music and all. And you're what, twenty years old now or? Yeah, I was twenty. I was eight, like eighteen, that was after Oklahoma. Mm hmm, yeah, so you're painting houses. Yeah, I was painting houses and and uh fixing uh rooftops.

• 23:32Speaker 01

But it was amazing, you know, like I learned a lot, I learned a lot from that and. And one day, somebody approached to me and was like. Who are you in Colombia? I was like. No, I'm nobody. So he was like, okay, so you gotta go back.

• 23:51Speaker 01

You know, get get your name big in your country and you know, let your country take you to another level. So I was like, oh, my God, no, I don't want to. I don't want to go back like a loser, you know, like.

• 24:04Lewis Howes?

  Like you didn't make it.

• 24:05Speaker 01

Yes, but but I I took the decision I can and I and I went back.

• 24:11Lewis Howes?

  You did?

• 24:12Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 24:12Lewis Howes?

How long were you in Miami for, like six months to a year or yeah?

• 24:15Speaker 01

Yeah, like six months, yeah. And I started, I started started from the bottom, now we're here.

• 24:24Lewis Howes?

And what happened? What was the next step? Were you just like trying to meet managers or other artists? Did you have a mentor?

• 24:30Speaker 01

  I.

• 24:31Lewis Howes?

Were you just singing in clubs?

• 24:32Speaker 01

I wanted to be like Daddy Yankee, I remember all the time. He was my biggest inspiration and all. But I was independent. I was independent for like, I'm eleven, it's been like eleven or like twelve years of my career now. And I was independent like for eight years.

• 24:49Speaker 01

So I I learned how to manage myself. I used to be my.

• 24:52Lewis Howes?

  Hustled.

• 24:52Speaker 01

I, yeah, I used to be my own manager. I used to sell my, you know, my music in the streets.

• 24:57Lewis Howes?

  Merch here.

• 24:58Speaker 01

The merch, I used to, you know, it was funny because they called me and I was acting like I was the manager. So I was like, hey, I need you in Boston. I was like, yeah, yeah. I'm I'm just talking with Jose. Uh, we need to book him for this day. Okay, I'mma I'mma talk to Jay Bobbin and I'll let you know, guys. Okay, what's your name? I'm Jose. Okay, Jose, thank you.

• 25:17Lewis Howes?

But you were saying you were Jay Bobbin then?

• 25:19Speaker 01

They didn't know I was Jay Bobbin. I was Jose.

• 25:21Lewis Howes?

Got you. You're, yeah, I got you. I see.

• 25:23Speaker 01

You know, like I was the manager. So let me talk to Jay Bobbin. I hung up and I'm like, okay, I'm gonna do. So and I learned that I learned and I started learning how the music business works in Colombia and I started doing my own promo and going to all the radios and knocking the doors.

• 25:38Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 25:40Speaker 01

That's, you know, there's no excuse when you really want something, you know, to make it happen.

• 25:44Lewis Howes?

Wow. So were you just kind of writing your own songs? Were you lobbying with other people then?

• 25:48Speaker 01

No, at the time I was just writing my own songs and just.

• 25:51Lewis Howes?

And the beats and everything? Or were you just doing the lyrics?

• 25:53Speaker 01

Not just the lyrics, you know, I got.

• 25:54Lewis Howes?

You found someone else to produce, yeah, yeah.

• 25:56Speaker 01

I found some chicks that were like supporting me and, you know, like they really loved my music and.

• 26:01Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 26:02Speaker 01

It was good, but it it was amazing, you know, it's been amazing, you know, just to watch the whole process, you know, that it's not like. It's not, it wasn't for one day to another, you know, it's a process.

• 26:16Lewis Howes?

  Been ten years, right?

• 26:17Speaker 01

Yeah, and I'm, and I'm still, I think that I'm just brand new.

• 26:21Lewis Howes?

  Just starting.

• 26:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 26:22Lewis Howes?

  Especially in different markets.

• 26:24Speaker 01

Yeah, and the funny thing is like, ah, the, the, the bigger I get, the less famous I feel.

• 26:31Lewis Howes?

  Hmm, really?

• 26:32Speaker 01

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 26:34Lewis Howes?

  Why do you feel less?

• 26:35Speaker 01

I don't know, I don't know. I used to, I used to think that I was famous when nobody knew me, and now that I'm like a little bit well-known, I feel like nobody knows where I am.

• 26:44Lewis Howes?

  Really?

• 26:45Speaker 01

Yeah, but it's, I think it's good. It keeps me on the ground.

• 26:48Lewis Howes?

  Hmm.

• 26:49Speaker 01

Yeah, sometimes I even forget that I'm J. Bobbin. Because I'm always, I'm still living in Colombia, I'm still living in Argentina, I like to be around my true friends. And they don't see J. Bobbin, they say Jose, they say Jose.

• 27:01Lewis Howes?

  Hmm.

• 27:01Speaker 01

You know, so, but I'm like a week, I just completely forget, I'm like, oh my god, yeah.

• 27:07Lewis Howes?

  I'm J. Bobbin.

• 27:08Speaker 01

Yeah. We got these things to do.

• 27:11Lewis Howes?

And when you come here to L.A., do people recognize you or?

• 27:13Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's like, no.

• 27:14Lewis Howes?

  The L.A. community is probably.

• 27:16Speaker 01

The L.A. community is, it's, it's big enough.

• 27:18Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 27:18Speaker 01

But you know, I love fashion and, you know, this, like, they've been like, putting me in some fashion blogs from here, and you know, they started like, who's this guy, and, and then maybe Skulik posed a picture of me, and then this one, and this one, and this one, and, and, and they started knowing, like, who's this guy?

• 27:37Lewis Howes?

Bieber performs with you live at the Staples Center.

• 27:40Speaker 01

That was beautiful, thank you, Justin. It was amazing, you know, it's like, it's like if you, it's like ten, ten years ago, you just invited Michael Jackson to go to your show.

• 27:50Lewis Howes?

  And then he performed?

• 27:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:52Lewis Howes?

  It's crazy, right?

• 27:53Speaker 01

It was amazing, you know, but, that, that's why, you know, I, I remember that day, because I called Skulik, I'm like, yo, I'm going to Staples Center, and we got this song, and, why don't you tell Justin to come? You know, I don't see nothing impossible, you know, it's just, what's the worst thing that could, that could happen?

• 28:08Lewis Howes?

  Say no?

• 28:08Speaker 01

Yeah. But even the no, you can change it.

• 28:11Lewis Howes?

  Yes.

• 28:11Speaker 01

You keep pushing, pushing. But I was like, quick, I'm like, yo, Skulik, I'm going to L.A., I don't know, but then you ask your boy if he wants to go with me, and then? He said, yeah, he's down.

• 28:22Lewis Howes?

  Amazing.

• 28:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, but you gotta try.

• 28:24Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 28:25Speaker 01

You know, there's a lot of people that never try. They keep the, they kept the fear for them. You know, like, like, yeah, like, nah, that's never gonna happen. And I asked them, have you tried? And they say, no. So how you know it's not gonna happen if you don't even try? You know, so.

• 28:42Lewis Howes?

What do you do to train your mind and your heart to overcome any fears or doubts you have? Is there a practice? Do you have a spiritual practice? Do you have?

• 28:50Speaker 01

I got, I got a mentor. I mean, I got like, I got somebody that really take care of me and helping me with, with all this like the spiritual things, you know? And, um, he has helped me a lot. And, uh, and he's been like an angel for me.

• 29:06Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 29:06Speaker 01

You know, and of course I always try to connect with the, with God or the universe. You know, whatever you wanna call, you know, but I, I talk to, to God, you know, like, and I'm, but lately, um, like I used to be like, God, give me this, give me that. And now I'm just grateful and grateful and grateful. And the more grateful I am, the more things I get. I think it's the most beautiful business that you can make with the universe of God. It's funny, but it's true. I don't know how, I don't know how it works, but it's like that, you know, like, like even when I wake up, the first thing I'm like, yo, thank you, God. You know, thank you, I'm breathing.

• 29:50Speaker 01

You know, I can see, I can move. And then the other thing is more blessings and blessings and blessings, you know, and, and I think it's the best, I think, yeah, if you wanna see us a business, do the business. It's gonna work.

• 30:04Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 30:05Speaker 01

  Be grateful, you know?

• 30:07Lewis Howes?

We preach that a lot at the show, talking about gratitude. For me, it's constantly on my mind. The morning I talk about it, that night before I go to bed, I say what I'm most grateful for.

• 30:15Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 30:15Lewis Howes?

On my voicemail, from my phone. When someone calls me uh and it goes to voicemail, I say, if you want me to reply to you, tell me what you're most grateful for today.

• 30:25Speaker 01

  That's dope.

• 30:25Lewis Howes?

So I'm constantly trying to share it and get it out of other people. Because I believe in the same philosophy.

• 30:30Speaker 01

Wow, I think it's the most beautiful thing, man. It really, really works. Like. When I get up and I just get the coffee. Really, just like.

• 30:38Lewis Howes?

  So grateful.

• 30:39Speaker 01

It's funny, people think like, nah, he, he's a big artist or whatever. What makes him happy? Like, what I'm gonna give him? You know, like, when it's my birthday, people are like, we're not gonna give you nothing. You have everything. What you know is, what's everything for you? That's what I ask them, like. Give me a chocolate, man. Give me a coffee. Give me a hug. You know, like, I'm, I'm grateful with that. Give me, give me your time. You know, so. I don't know, life is, it's full of beautiful and simple things. And the good things are good too, you know, like. It's a balance. You know? I'm grateful for, for the little things and for the big things.

• 31:18Lewis Howes?

Sure, yeah. For the coffee, then when Beaver comes to perform with you.

• 31:21Speaker 01

Yes, yes. Yeah, they're all blessings, man.

• 31:25Lewis Howes?

When you go to sleep at night, what's the thing you think about? What's the dream or the thing you think about right before you go to bed?

• 31:33Speaker 01

Right now. Nah, you know, like, right now, honestly, I just go to bed and say, thank you, God. Thank you, and.

• 31:41Speaker 01

And I go to sleep. It's hard for me to sleep because I'm always thinking and thinking.

• 31:44Lewis Howes?

  Me too, man, it's tough.

• 31:45Speaker 01

It's like, when I get up. I feel more tired than I used to the last day, you know? Because I, I'm thinking constantly all the time, thinking, thinking. And it's not like I have done something bad. It's just that I, I just.

• 32:01Lewis Howes?

It's hard to shut it off.

• 32:02Speaker 01

Yes, but I can't, man. It's funny because I, I wake up more tired.

• 32:09Speaker 01

  You know, I.

• 32:10Lewis Howes?

  Do you meditate?

• 32:11Speaker 01

Yeah, I try. I try to meditate. I look for it and I I used to try two times a day in the morning. And like around six, that's what they recommend me.

• 32:22Lewis Howes?

  Sure.

• 32:23Speaker 01

I did the classes I went.

• 32:24Lewis Howes?

You went to TM or what did you do? Which classes? Transcendental Meditation?

• 32:28Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah. You know, they give you their mantra and you just repeat it over and over again, your secret mantra?

• 32:34Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 32:34Speaker 01

So, okay, so I got my secret mantra and I just repeat it over and over again. But I I cannot tell you that I do it every day because I'm not.

• 32:43Lewis Howes?

It's challenging. It's hard to, man.

• 32:44Speaker 01

  It's, yeah.

• 32:45Lewis Howes?

I try to do it once a day, but it's hard.

• 32:46Speaker 01

That that shows how sometimes how how selfish are we with ourself? We should give more time for us to meditate than

• 32:57Speaker 01

  get money or whatever.

• 32:59Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 32:59Speaker 01

You know, because if you're not okay and you're not relaxed, it's not gonna be easy to get the other stuff. But I'm trying. I try. Sometimes I do it. Sometimes I just like stay quiet.

• 33:12Lewis Howes?

  Uh huh. Breathe.

• 33:14Speaker 01

And that's what I'm, that's what I see lately. I rest more when I'm stay quiet, like in the bed like this. Than when I'm sleeping. I don't know. It's weird. I'm I'm like hyperactive.

• 33:26Lewis Howes?

Yeah, you got a lot of ideas, man. A lot of opportunities flooding in every day. Everyone's pulling at you.

• 33:30Speaker 01

  Ideas and and I just.

• 33:33Lewis Howes?

It's hard to execute it fast enough, right?

• 33:35Speaker 01

Oh, but a super fast. Yeah, I want I want things like this.

• 33:39Lewis Howes?

  Yesterday.

• 33:40Speaker 01

That's, yeah, you're like yesterday. I think it's good and bad, you know, pressure is on and sometimes it's good because that has helped me to achieve a lot of dreams.

• 33:52Speaker 01

But sometimes I suffer a lot because there's things that you just cannot do it.

• 33:56Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 33:56Speaker 01

It just like you just cannot do it right now.

• 34:00Lewis Howes?

  Takes time, man.

• 34:01Speaker 01

  Takes time.

• 34:02Lewis Howes?

You didn't get this big overnight.

• 34:03Speaker 01

  No, exactly.

• 34:04Lewis Howes?

  A decade.

• 34:05Speaker 01

Yeah, a decade. And and I know, you know, there's more things that I have to achieve and it's taking me a lot of years too, but.

• 34:11Lewis Howes?

How old are you now as well?

• 34:12Speaker 01

  I'm thirty one.

• 34:13Lewis Howes?

Thirty one, yeah. Right. When's your birthday?

• 34:15Speaker 01

  May seventh.

• 34:16Lewis Howes?

  Coming up?

• 34:16Speaker 01

  Yeah, I'm thirty two.

• 34:18Lewis Howes?

That's cool. I just turned thirty four last week.

• 34:20Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 34:20Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 34:21Speaker 01

  And how you feeling?

• 34:22Lewis Howes?

  Young.

• 34:23Speaker 01

  That's good.

• 34:24Lewis Howes?

  Hungry.

• 34:25Speaker 01

I'm super hungry, but I'm really scared of, I don't wanna get old, man.

• 34:30Lewis Howes?

  It's a state of mind.

• 34:31Speaker 01

  You think, yes, right?

• 34:33Lewis Howes?

You know, I, I talk about this a lot on the show, that my dad never celebrated my birthday when I was growing up. We didn't have parties, there was no presents, and I used to get very upset and hurt. I was like, do you not, do you not love me? Like, all my other frie- I'd go to these birthday parties and everyone's getting, you know, cakes and presents, and I was like, how come I don't have this? My mom gave me like one party when I was like four or five, and then my dad wouldn't let me have any afterwards.

• 34:58Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 34:58Lewis Howes?

And I finally asked him when I was like seven, I go, Dad, why don't we celebrate my life? You know, my birth. And he said, because I never want you to be limited by your age. Most people in this world are limited by how young or old they are, and when you put emphasis on it, it's gonna hold you back.

• 35:15Speaker 01

  We should celebrate every day.

• 35:17Lewis Howes?

Every day, not one day to be like, oh, I'm a year older. Or I'm, yeah, this and that. So for me, it was more of like a mindset. I feel uh, healthier now than when I was twenty-two.

• 35:28Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 35:28Lewis Howes?

Because I, it's a daily practice, and I feel like I'm so much wiser. You know, every year I feel like I learn so much, because I try and I fail and I-

• 35:36Speaker 01

  We're all students, man.

• 35:37Lewis Howes?

That's it, man. It's a school of greatness, students here.

• 35:40Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 35:40Lewis Howes?

Um, are there any non-negotiables for you? Things that you must do every single day? It's like, call your mom, or work out, or meditate, or something where you're like, I, you know, it's a must-do every day?

• 35:51Speaker 01

I try to work out every day. Try, try to wear healthy every day.

• 35:56Lewis Howes?

  Mm-hmm.

• 35:57Speaker 01

Try. Uh, I talk to my mom every day, basically.

• 36:00Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 36:01Speaker 01

Since she knows how to use WhatsApp.

• 36:02Lewis Howes?

  WhatsApp, yeah.

• 36:03Speaker 01

Yeah, oh my god. So the time, sending me pictures and media and, you know, moms.

• 36:09Lewis Howes?

  Sure.

• 36:09Speaker 01

You know, and, um, what else?

• 36:15Speaker 01

Being grateful is the most, is the thing that I really have to do.

• 36:18Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 36:19Speaker 01

Every day, even when bad things happen. Alright, thank you. I don't know why, but I say thank you.

• 36:26Lewis Howes?

Mm-hmm. Isn't it funny that sometimes all the things that we think are bad or negative or the adversity we face, when we look back at it, we realize it had to happen in order for us to be where we're at.

• 36:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:37Lewis Howes?

Like some bad tragic thing happened, like you got a car, uh, a plane crash, like tragic.

• 36:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:43Lewis Howes?

But what did it teach you that you've developed now?

• 36:46Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 36:47Lewis Howes?

  Your music or your passion.

• 36:48Speaker 01

Yeah, but it doesn't mean that it was your best moment in your life.

• 36:50Lewis Howes?

  Absolutely, yeah.

• 36:51Speaker 01

Because there's, there's a lot of people that are like, yeah, when I went to jail, I think that was the best moment of my life because I learned. No, no, no, no. That's not, that wasn't your best moment. You learn from it.

• 37:00Lewis Howes?

But you can be grateful for it.

• 37:01Speaker 01

Eh, eh, yeah, be grateful for it, but don't tell me that was the best moment in your life because it's not.

• 37:06Lewis Howes?

  Right.

• 37:06Speaker 01

You know, but, but yeah, man, I think life is perfect. I think life is perfect and everything happens for a reason.

• 37:13Lewis Howes?

And do you feel like you have a responsibility with your platform, with your audience and your following or?

• 37:18Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 37:19Lewis Howes?

And what is that responsibility for you?

• 37:21Speaker 01

To make them, to make them first, like, I want to show the world that I'm a regular human being like everybody else. You know, like, like I, I also told you, like I got fears, like, you know.

• 37:32Lewis Howes?

You're like, I can feel you, you've got skin.

• 37:34Speaker 01

I, I cry, I'm heart, you know, I'm heartbroken sometimes.

• 37:39Lewis Howes?

So it's in your blood. You have to be heartbroken, right?

• 37:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 37:43Lewis Howes?

  You have the passion.

• 37:44Speaker 01

Yeah, man, and I, I think one of the things that has changed in the music game has like from the Latino and the reggaeton side is like, I always wanted to be a game changer, not even just with the music.

• 38:02Speaker 01

Uh, on a personal level to like, to be just real and be who you are and not pretend to have like masks or different faces, you know, I, I think to have two faces is, is too heavy.

• 38:18Speaker 01

You know, to be walking in the world.

• 38:19Lewis Howes?

  Hmm.

• 38:20Speaker 01

You know, like, I'm the same guy that you see on Instagram, I'm the same guy that you see me here. And I don't, it's all about being real, like. Sometimes even in the, in the Instagram or on the social media, I'm like, it's not a good day. Yeah, like, yeah, it happens like, yeah, it's just, maybe it's not a good day right now, but. I show them that I'm not, I don't have a perfect life. And, and, and I don't wish to have a perfect life.

• 38:50Lewis Howes?

  Right.

• 38:51Speaker 01

But I, I tell the world all the time, like, all the people that follow me, like. If I, if, if I can make it, you can make it too, and, and don't worry if you've been to a hard moment, because I've been to a hard moments too, and. I don't know, over time, in the mom, and I mean, of this world.

• 39:10Speaker 01

What happened with the music industry that they just started like showing. Perfect lives, and it's not like that, you know, it's not. And I think the more human you get. The better it's gonna be for you, because all these haters or whatever you can call. They're not gonna hate that much, because they'll be like, oh, yeah, he, he, he's real.

• 39:30Lewis Howes?

  He struggles.

• 39:31Speaker 01

Yeah, like, you know, because when you show the world, like, you have this perfect life. And, and nothing happens to you, when something happens to you, everybody gonna be like, ah, you see? They're gonna be like.

• 39:44Lewis Howes?

  Not perfect, yeah, yeah.

• 39:45Speaker 01

Yeah, so. I think being real and being honest with yourself and being honest with the rest of the world. It's, it's, it's, it's a blessing.

• 39:56Lewis Howes?

  Hmm.

• 39:57Speaker 01

  It's a real blessing.

• 39:58Lewis Howes?

What's the biggest fear you have, or biggest challenge?

• 40:00Speaker 01

Like fear, like, I have too many dreams that I don't wanna die. You know? Maybe I have, you know, I have a lot of things to do before I leave this dimension.

• 40:14Lewis Howes?

  Hmm.

• 40:15Speaker 01

You know? Uh, so sometimes I'm like, no, I don't wanna die, and that's my, that's one of my biggest fear.

• 40:22Lewis Howes?

  Death.

• 40:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, death.

• 40:25Speaker 01

Because I'm like, wow, I wanna have family, and you see, I'm not saying I wanna have money, no, forget about that, I mean, like, I wanna have a family, I wanna have kids, I wanna see. Actually, when I have this airplane crash, the first thing I was, that like, crashing to my mind, I was like, I didn't have no kids.

• 40:41Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 40:43Speaker 01

I I didn't care about the other stuff. I just wanted to have kids. I'm like, oh my god, I'm gonna have kids. Oh, nothing happened.

• 40:51Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 40:52Speaker 01

  Yeah, so.

• 40:53Lewis Howes?

So why haven't you had kids yet?

• 40:55Speaker 01

Uh, I think I haven't found the right person, or. Or I'm too scared. Or. I don't know, but I really want to. I really want to, I'm just. I don't know. I haven't found the right person yet.

• 41:12Lewis Howes?

  Hasn't felt right yet.

• 41:13Speaker 01

Yeah, because I was raised in a family that, you know, my mom and my dad are still together. They really, they really love each other and they. And I wanna have that type of marriage, you know, like. Forever, because a lot of people. A lot of people, when they wanna get married, they just get, they just happy until they get married. Because they have the, like the, I don't know how you call like the. They just can't wait that day.

• 41:40Lewis Howes?

Yeah, and then it's like downhill.

• 41:41Speaker 01

Yes, because they think they, they getting married because the party. Because the society and they're thinking it's gonna be for the rest of your life. So when you really think that you're gonna get married for the rest of your life.

• 41:56Speaker 01

You don't even need a party.

• 41:58Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 41:59Speaker 01

  You know?

• 41:59Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 42:00Speaker 01

But you can do a party too if you want, but. Because you're gonna, you go to the party and then you know you have the rest of your life. You know, to share with your family or your, your girl, whatever. But if you think, there's a lot of people right now, they just think until the party. And when they get to the party.

• 42:18Speaker 01

It's over. That's why there's a lot of, I think there's a lot of, you know. Uh. How can you say that? Divorces and, you know, because. It was just cool until they get married.

• 42:30Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 42:31Speaker 01

You know, so I wanna get, I wanna meet somebody, meet somebody that is gonna be for the rest of the life. You know?

• 42:38Lewis Howes?

Explain, describe her to me. What's that, what's that woman look like?

• 42:42Speaker 01

It's, it's just, I think, I think it's. Everything is a business, I'm saying like. The dream has to be. You gotta respect her dream and she got, she has to respect my dream and if we are going the same.

• 42:57Lewis Howes?

The vision has to be aligned.

• 42:59Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's a business.

• 43:00Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 43:01Speaker 01

Because you're never gonna, you're never gonna find the perfect person for you. You're gonna make, you're gonna, you gotta build it.

• 43:07Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 43:08Speaker 01

And she gotta build you too, of course, you know, because it does be selfish. Like, I want you to be like this. But you don't have to do a move. Nah, that's selfish. You have to, you know, like, so I think like. Marriage or whatever you can call, I think is really find your partner in crime. You know, good crimes.

• 43:27Speaker 01

You know, and, and, and just find somebody that dream with you and makes you better. You know, that makes you happy because you have to be happy with yourself. Nobody can make you happy. You know, I, I think that's another, that's another like point, like a lot of people looking for another woman. Or for somebody else or another guy, even if you're bisexual or homosexual, whatever you are, I'm cool with that. Of course, it's about love. So it's, they're looking for somebody to make them happy and nobody's gonna make you happy. You know, you have to be happy with yourself to make others people happy too. You know, so.

• 44:08Speaker 01

I'm, I'm looking for that partner, you know, like, okay, this is what I wanna do. If you're down with me and I'm down with you, okay, let's create this. Relationship or marriage or business or whatever you wanna call.

• 44:23Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, that's great.

• 44:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 44:25Lewis Howes?

How do you develop the confidence in yourself? And when you went back to Columbia after you left Miami. A failure, quote unquote, a failure, right? Didn't make it, went back home. How did you start to build confidence in this mindset that you believed in yourself enough that you could create your dreams? What was that process like?

• 44:48Speaker 01

My mom had a lot of things to do with it because she always.

• 44:54Speaker 01

Tell me like you're gonna make it. That was a positive programation. Like, because sometimes your dad say you're not gonna make it. And you believe in that and you're never gonna make it. But my mom was like, I believe in you, I see you at the Grammys, I see you doing this and that. So she, she helps me, believe in me. And, you know, thoughts are energy and energy becomes material. That have, does it have any sense?

• 45:23Lewis Howes?

  Absolutely.

• 45:23Speaker 01

Right, so, everything you think, you can make it happen. You know, like, you wanna, this, I don't know, you wanna airplane? So just think about the plane and, and work for it and, it's, everything started with a thought, you know? With an idea. And then boom, you got the plane.

• 45:44Speaker 01

You know, I'm just doing, doing random examples, but.

• 45:48Lewis Howes?

  Of course.

• 45:48Speaker 01

But I think, you know, thoughts are energy, energy becomes material.

• 45:54Lewis Howes?

  Absolutely.

• 45:55Speaker 01

  So.

• 45:56Lewis Howes?

So she would believe, she would tell you these things and then you started to believe them?

• 45:59Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 46:00Lewis Howes?

Started to say, okay, maybe I do see myself there, maybe I see a Grammy, maybe I see.

• 46:03Speaker 01

No, and I started, I started picturing myself getting the Grammy. And it's funny because every time those things have happened to me, I'm like, wow, I, I pictured this before. Now I got it here. You know, like, I found a picture like this week of myself with a, it was like a, a gram, it was a picture of a Grammy. And I was like this, with the Grammy in the, in the picture, in the photo. And I remember that I, that I wrote a post that said like, I will get there. And I got them. So you see, it's like, gotta believe in you and you gotta, and you gotta have good people surround you and around you.

• 46:47Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 46:48Speaker 01

To tell you through. You know, like, because there's a lot of people that they don't have the talent and they think they have it, but they won't, they, they won't.

• 46:56Lewis Howes?

  Right.

• 46:56Speaker 01

But maybe they have another talent doing some other stuff.

• 46:58Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 47:00Speaker 01

With me, my people were so real. Like when I had bad songs, they were like nah.

• 47:04Lewis Howes?

  You suck.

• 47:05Speaker 01

Yes, just like that. I'm okay. It's not that, oh, thank you. I'm so grateful that you told me that. Nah, because you're never gonna like somebody saying nah, it sucks. Yeah, it hurts. Well, but thank you. Not at that moment because it hurts. But then, yeah, two minutes later, okay, yeah, thank you. Now we got a good song. Thank you.

• 47:24Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 47:24Speaker 01

Thank you. I didn't like that, but thank you.

• 47:26Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, of course. Amazing.

• 47:28Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 47:29Lewis Howes?

I'm so inspired by you, man. I love the humility you have. I love your energy. I love your spirits, your passion. And your focus to create an impact. You know, I think so many artists, bigger artists, I wouldn't say so many, but there are some of them that kind of fall off the wagon. You know what I mean? They kind of fall off and they stop making an impact and they get in their head too much. Their ego gets too big.

• 47:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:53Lewis Howes?

And I feel like you're, uh, you're doing it all for the right reasons, which inspires me even more.

• 47:58Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 47:59Lewis Howes?

To know, and it makes me want you to have everything, you know? It's like I want you to have it all, all the dreams you have.

• 48:03Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 48:04Lewis Howes?

Um, a few questions for you. How hard is it for you to transfer from the Spanish market into other markets that don't speak Spanish for you?

• 48:15Speaker 01

It's, it's been amazing, amazing, man, because like I've been in Greece, I've been in, um, well, everywhere, basically everywhere. Like this, us, the first country that, that I went, besides, I've been in like a Latino country, was Romania. Then I went to Greece and then I started going to Italy and then Germany and then Switzerland and they didn't have no clue what I was saying, but they, they feel the vibe. And it does, that's, and right now, I think with the social media, I think the world is smaller now. You know, it's big, but at the same time it's small.

• 48:57Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 48:58Speaker 01

And you can reach the people easier if you have the right. The right vibes and the right things.

• 49:05Lewis Howes?

It's funny because passion is a universal language.

• 49:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:07Lewis Howes?

And I've told you before, I've been salsa dancing for 12 years. And every time I go, I don't understand what people are saying, but I understand what they're saying.

• 49:16Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 49:17Lewis Howes?

And I can feel it, whether it's a sad song and someone's heartbroken, or it's about, you know, a dream of chasing a girl, or it's about, you know, living a better life. Like, you can always feel it in the music.

• 49:29Speaker 01

It's real. It's real. That is a universal language. You have to feel it. You don't have to understand what they're saying. You just gotta feel. It just has to feel. It has to feel right.

• 49:39Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 49:40Speaker 01

And that's it. And we've been traveling the world, like, just not, as I told you, not, just not Spanish. You know, people, countries where they speak Spanish. We've been flying to a lot of countries, sold out concerts. Not really big yet, you know, like, you know, 4,000, 5,000, that's people, but we can get, we're gonna get bigger. But it's a process, you know? It's a process.

• 50:02Lewis Howes?

  Absolutely.

• 50:05Lewis Howes?

Where can we connect with you online? Where do you like to hang out the most? Where, if people want to see you on tour, is there tour dates online somewhere?

• 50:13Speaker 01

Yeah, on the webpage, you know, jbobbin.com.

• 50:16Lewis Howes?

  Jbobbin.com.

• 50:17Speaker 01

But I'm really, I'm really into my social medias, man.

• 50:21Lewis Howes?

  Instagram, man.

• 50:22Speaker 01

  Instagram.

• 50:22Lewis Howes?

  They're machine.

• 50:23Speaker 01

Man, I'm all the time like that. And, um, and I like it because I think social media, if you really know how to use it, I don't know if I really know how to use it, but I think I use it good. At least people get my vibe, you know, like, not just the music. Not just the music, which is, which is why I'm here.

• 50:44Lewis Howes?

  But your energy, personality.

• 50:46Speaker 01

Yeah, like, like, send them different messages through the music.

• 50:50Lewis Howes?

Yeah, yeah. That's great, man. So make sure you guys check out jbobbin.com. Jbobbin on Instagram.

• 50:56Speaker 01

  Jbobbin.

• 50:57Lewis Howes?

  Snapchat.

• 50:57Speaker 01

  Jbobbin official, Snapchat, Facebook Jbobbin.

• 51:00Lewis Howes?

Yeah, he's massive. He's got tons of great content, videos, photos. It's awesome. You guys are gonna love it. I don't follow you on Snapchat yet, but I will.

• 51:06Speaker 01

  Jbobbin official.

• 51:09Lewis Howes?

I'm more Instagram story guy now. I used to use Snapchat, but now I'm kinda like, ah, doing both. It sucks.

• 51:14Speaker 01

It's weird, right? I started like, super Snap. I was like, why Instagram is doing this? Why they trying? And then I started. I like it. And I'm like, I'm not watching snaps because I can see one.

• 51:25Lewis Howes?

Why do the same thing? Yeah.

• 51:27Speaker 01

So it was boring like to make two videos saying the same thing.

• 51:29Lewis Howes?

  No.

• 51:30Speaker 01

  Right. Hey Snapchat, good morning.

• 51:32Lewis Howes?

  Hey Instagram.

• 51:33Speaker 01

Instagram, nah man. And they're starting like just saying good morning and uh save it from Snapchat and put it on Instagram. But then I was like, that's not fair for the fans. They're gonna see the same thing.

• 51:43Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 51:43Speaker 01

So right now I'm more sticking into snaps, into Instagram.

• 51:46Lewis Howes?

Okay, yeah, yeah. I saw you on your hike yesterday, Mr. Grillo's, yeah.

• 51:50Speaker 01

  What's up?

• 51:50Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, yeah, I saw that.

• 51:54Lewis Howes?

This is a question I ask at the end for everyone. It's called the three truths.

• 51:57Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 51:58Lewis Howes?

And so I want to ask you to uh do it in English first and then when you're done, we'll do in Spanish.

• 52:03Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 52:04Lewis Howes?

So the three truths, um it's the last day for you, a hundred years from now. You've achieved every Grammy and Oscar or any other thing you want to achieve. You've achieved it all.

• 52:17Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 52:17Lewis Howes?

You're you're the president of Columbia, whatever it is you want to do. You've done it.

• 52:21Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 52:22Lewis Howes?

You've got the the woman of your dreams, the children, the family of your dreams. You've done everything you set your mind out to do. And it's the last day and you have a piece of paper and a pen. And for whatever reason, all the stuff you've created has been erased. Music, videos, everything gone. But you have a piece of paper and a pen as your final message to the world. And you get to write down three things you know to be true about everything you've learned from your experience, kind of the three lessons that you would leave behind for anyone to ever remember, Jay Balvin. What would be your three truths?

• 53:00Lewis Howes?

  In inglés.

• 53:01Speaker 01

  Be real.

• 53:05Speaker 01

  Be loyal and be grateful.

• 53:09Lewis Howes?

And the three truths, how would you say these are my three truths in Spanish?

• 53:13Speaker 01

Estas son mis tres verdades. Ser agradecido, leal, eh loyal, grateful.

• 53:22Lewis Howes?

  What was the last one?

• 53:23Speaker 01

  What was it?

• 53:23Lewis Howes?

  Be real, loyal and grateful.

• 53:25Speaker 01

Be real, loyal and grateful and dream, I went over, I got four now.

• 53:28Lewis Howes?

  Let's hear it.

• 53:28Speaker 01

  And dream big.

• 53:30Lewis Howes?

Okay, so in English, what are they?

• 53:32Speaker 01

  Dream big.

• 53:33Lewis Howes?

  Dream big.

• 53:34Speaker 01

  Be loyal.

• 53:35Lewis Howes?

  Be loyal.

• 53:36Speaker 01

  Grateful.

• 53:38Speaker 01

  Oh my god.

• 53:39Lewis Howes?

  Be real.

• 53:40Speaker 01

  What are the four?

• 53:42Lewis Howes?

Dream big, be real, be loyal, be grateful.

• 53:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:45Lewis Howes?

Okay, what were the time in Spanish? What are the four?

• 53:47Speaker 01

Okay. Ser leal. Ser agradecido. Soñar en grande.

• 53:55Speaker 01

  Y... Oh my god.

• 53:59Lewis Howes?

There's one missing. Be, dream big, be real.

• 54:02Speaker 01

Ah, sí, soñar en grande. Soñar en grande. Ser agradecido.

• 54:08Speaker 01

  Ser, ser, ser real. Y...

• 54:16Lewis Howes?

I have to write it down, man. That's funny.

• 54:18Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 54:19Lewis Howes?

Let's do it. Here, go ahead, write it down.

• 54:21Speaker 01

  It has to be.

• 54:22Lewis Howes?

  Dream big.

• 54:23Speaker 01

  Is be real.

• 54:24Lewis Howes?

  Be real.

• 54:25Speaker 01

Which is ser real. You know, be grateful.

• 54:30Lewis Howes?

  Sí, claro.

• 54:32Speaker 01

Which is ser agradecido. Okay. Then, dream big.

• 54:39Lewis Howes?

  Dream big and be loyal.

• 54:41Speaker 01

Ah, yeah, we got it. Dream big, soñar en grande. Uh huh.

• 54:48Lewis Howes?

  Loyal.

• 54:49Speaker 01

  Soñar en grande, yeah.

• 54:50Lewis Howes?

Is that right? What is this one?

• 54:52Speaker 01

  Be grateful, yeah.

• 54:53Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, be loyal.

• 54:54Speaker 01

Be loyal. Ser leal. Man, and work hard.

• 55:00Lewis Howes?

  Go ahead.

• 55:00Speaker 01

You need to work hard, man. This need, this... How you gonna achieve your dreams if you don't work hard for it?

• 55:05Lewis Howes?

I like it, okay. We'll, we'll repeat them again then.

• 55:08Speaker 01

Yeah, work hard. Okay, work hard, trabajar fuerte.

• 55:11Lewis Howes?

Okay, so in English, what are your three?

• 55:13Speaker 01

  Okay, be real.

• 55:15Lewis Howes?

  Yes.

• 55:15Speaker 01

Be grateful. Dream big, be loyal, and work hard.

• 55:19Lewis Howes?

  And in Spanish?

• 55:20Speaker 01

Ser real, ser agradecido, soñar en grande, ser leal, y trabajar fuerte.

• 55:27Lewis Howes?

  Claro.

• 55:28Speaker 01

  Ta-dan.

• 55:30Lewis Howes?

Um, before I ask the final question, do you have any questions for me? Um, why you want me, why you wanted to to interview me? Well, first, you're the you're the first Latin star I've had on. And I respect your music. Thank you. And I now respect you even more as a human. Because of the way you show up and your energy and your passion. So for me, I'm all about energy. And right when I saw your your stuff on Instagram, I was like, I'm I'm attracted to your energy. Okay. And for me, I don't have people on if they're like famous star, if I don't like their energy. It's all about vibes. It's all about vibes. And if I feel like I want to be friends with that person.

• 56:11Lewis Howes?

But if they're just famous or whatever, and they have a big ego, or they're mean to people, I could care less. I think the same. So for me, I want my mission is to inspire a hundred million people to show them how to live their dreams. And live a comfortable lifestyle around their dreams. Because I feel like that's when we feel the most fulfilled. That's when we give the most love to ourselves and to others when we're living our dreams, or at least in the pursuit. Yeah. Of it. Enjoying the process. It may take ten years, twenty years. But we're on the path. I feel like we treat ourselves better and others better. I agree. So you're a great example of someone who's doing that, someone who's done that. Someone who went through adversity, who didn't make it, and now who's on your own path.

• 56:54Lewis Howes?

And for me, that's extremely inspiring. And the fact that you're doing it your way. The way that lights you up. Your message, your being real, you're being loyal, grateful, working hard, and you've got big dreams. That's what excites me, and that's why I wanted to have you on. Thank you. Of course. And before I ask the final question, I want to acknowledge you, even though I just did a little bit there, but I acknowledge all my guests. So Jose, I acknowledge you for the pursuit, man, the pursuit that you took to go and learn English, so that you can impact billions of people more. As opposed to just understanding Spanish. For you to take that risk in high school to go learn English is scary.

• 57:36Lewis Howes?

So I acknowledge you for that because otherwise we wouldn't be talking.

• 57:38Speaker 01

  Yes, you're right.

• 57:39Lewis Howes?

I acknowledge you for taking a chance and going to Miami and then going back home when it was actually not the right move to be in Miami at the time. And swallowing your pride as a twenty year old who may have had an ego then to say, listen, I need to go back. And dedicating on your craft to get to where you're at today because I know you worked ten hard years to get here and nothing came easy for you. And um, there's no way you would been able to do these things without being a good human being. So I acknowledge you for all those incredible guests, man. And for all your songs, man. Thanks for giving me the vibes to move.

• 58:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 58:15Lewis Howes?

Um, my final question for you is what is your definition of greatness?

• 58:20Speaker 01

Wow. Inspire. You know, people who inspire people, that's greatness. Greatness when, when you wanna be like, when you.

• 58:34Speaker 01

Wow. But yeah, it's like when, like, let's talk about, hmm, there's a lot of greatness. And greatness in the world. But like, ah, it's greatness for me, it's uh, to me, it's um.

• 58:53Speaker 01

People that really inspire, you know, like when you wanna like, wow, I wanna be like, I wanna be like that. And, and, and he's guiding me how to get there because when you really, when you're a goat, you know. You have to show the world how to get there.

• 59:15Speaker 01

You know, like if you're really one of the greatness, you have to show them like how to get there. You're not, when you're really the greatness. Were you great? Or how you call that? Yeah. When you're one of the greatest, for example.

• 59:26Lewis Howes?

I'm not one of the greatest of all time.

• 59:27Speaker 01

When you, when you, yeah, when you're the goat, for example, you, you're not, you're not scared to show the world and you're not.

• 59:34Lewis Howes?

  To teach others.

• 59:34Speaker 01

Yes, you're not. You know, it's like, it's like, you have to, when you're great, you're great. You, you have to be great with the people and teach them how to get there and how you, how you got there, not, not doing things for them by giving them the keys. You know, not giving them the fish, show them how to fish, you know, and get there. And so I think greatness is, is a, is a beautiful process.

• 1:00:02Speaker 01

It's a process that you make greatness inspire people. Inspire people and being and being a sharers like you wanna share your.

• 1:00:17Lewis Howes?

  Your gifts.

• 1:00:17Speaker 01

Yeah, it's like when you know you blessed, but you wanna bless everybody.

• 1:00:22Lewis Howes?

  Yes.

• 1:00:23Speaker 01

And and and you wanna and you're happy when you see your people is is going up and up and you just be grateful like wow, I'm so happy for them that they getting in this level.

• 1:00:34Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:35Speaker 01

You know, like, for example, when I'm with Farwell Williams, he's one of the greatest for me. And he, I was like, yo, can you explain me that? He goes, yes, of course. This is, this is what I think you should do. Let's do this. Let's do that. I wanna see you there. You know, like.

• 1:00:53Speaker 01

It's love, you know, it's, it's, it's all love too. Man, greatness is a lot.

• 1:01:00Lewis Howes?

And can you share in, in, uh, in Espanol, the definition of greatness?

• 1:01:06Speaker 01

Grandeza is compartir con el mundo las bendiciones e inspirarlos. Oh, now I see. So now I got it. Yeah, like greatness is like share your, share, share your blessings and inspire people to get them.
