Canadian Special Operations Face Off with ISIS | Sebastian "Butch" Bouchard | Ep. 378

Sebastian Bouchard, a veteran of the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR), recounts his 15-year career, beginning with the unit's founding after the infamous Airborne Regiment disbandment and detailing the brutal selection process . His operational history spans night raids in Afghanistan, a chaotic deployment in Libya, and intense close-quarters combat during the 2015 ISIS push in Iraq. Finally, Bouchard shares his post-military struggle with service-related TBI and his success with unconventional medical treatment, which inspired him to found the global risk mitigation firm, the 242 Group. The Team House with your hosts, Jack Murphy and David Park.

• 1:32Jack Murphy?

Hey folks, welcome to episode 378 of The Team House. I'm Jack Murphy here tonight with our guest. I'm really happy to have on the show tonight a veteran of the Canadian Special Operations Regiment, or CSOR. His name is Sebastian Bouchard, goes by Butch. That's how all of his teammates know him.

• 1:52Speaker 03

  Nice to see you, man.

• 1:53Jack Murphy?

Our first CSOR veteran on the show. We're really happy to have you here.

• 1:58Speaker 03

Thank you. Yeah, I'm happy to be here. Family's in bed. It's late here in London and we got all the time.

• 2:06Jack Murphy?

  Thanks for doing it.

• 2:07Speaker 03

Look, I even dusted off my.

• 2:10Jack Murphy?

To represent. Yeah, I love it.

• 2:14Jack Murphy?

So I usually ask people at the beginning of the podcast to tell kind of their origin story. If you can tell us a little bit about how you grew up and how that took you towards military service.

• 2:26Speaker 03

Yeah, you know, I joined at seventeen. You can tell in my accent, I'm French Canadian. It's important for your audience, you're US-based. And I like to say that. I'm French Canadian because I don't know if you guys are aware of that, but there's Quebecers, you know, from the province of Quebec, which I'm born in Montreal and from the province of Quebec, but Quebecers are the one the seventies and early nineties. I think they want to separate from kind of allegiances to friends, whatever. I'm not. I'm Canadian. My birth language is French, but I'm a proud Canadian. I served with the Canadian military.

• 3:09Speaker 03

And yeah, I joined at seventeen. I think like, you know, I've watched a few podcasts. I know a lot of military guys, both, you know, in the States and in Canada.

• 3:21Speaker 03

When you grew up, up harder neighborhood or a bit less wealthy, there's a lot of guys that come from that background, you know, I don't know if it gives you more grit or whatever, but I grew, you know, I grew up okay, but really basic and in a bit of a harder neighborhood in Montreal. And it just always interested me to do a physical career. And like, you know, I'm forty, forty-two now. So if you backtrack, when I was a teenager, Full Metal Jacket.

• 4:02Speaker 03

You know, early nineties, it was uh military uh movies and stuff, so I piqued my interest. And then, you know, uh you remember that movie Full Metal Jacket and

• 4:16Jack Murphy?

  Sure.

• 4:16Speaker 03

Somehow I thought it was cool to get yelled at and, you know, the drill instructor. Yeah, so it's as simple as that. It hooked me. I watched Full Metal Jacket. Twenty, thirty times I was hooked on it. Uh, video games kind of, you know, give you a bit of a flavor of it. And then, yeah, uh, right off high school. Um, join, join the infantry. So I went combat arms. Make people laugh a little bit, you know, seventeen year old, skinny, tall. Just, just high school diploma. And I, I went into the recruiting office and I'm like, I wanna be a helicopter pilot or maybe a jet pilot, you know, these jets.

• 5:02Speaker 03

You, you know where I'm going at?

• 5:03Jack Murphy?

Yeah, yeah, he points to the test score and is like.

• 5:07Speaker 03

I didn't do the score yet, but he's like, let me introduce you to the infantry.

• 5:15Speaker 03

So, yeah, here we go. So, um, a- and they sold me on it anyway, you can, you know, no matter the weather and everywhere in the world, you'll be in trenches and combat and blah, blah, blah. So I was sold. Convinced my parents to sign because in Canada, I was not, you know, an adult yet, so had to convince them to, to sign and they did. I didn't give them a choice. And um I joined the French Canadian Infantry. It's based in Quebec City. Uh, nicknames the Vain Deuce. Um, so it's the, the French Canadian Regiment of, of Infantry. Uh, served there. I was lucky that, um, you know, I, I went through the steps where I had battle school and blah, blah.

• 6:01Speaker 03

I was lucky when I went to the third regiment. Um, that's where, you know, in the nineties, the disbanded or airborne regiment.

• 6:10Jack Murphy?

  Yeah, uh Patricia's.

• 6:14Jack Murphy?

Was a Queen Patricia's regiment or something like that?

• 6:17Speaker 03

Yeah, so from, from the late seventies, whatever, when, when they stood up, um, there was a regiment based in Ontario and Pella Wawa. It was a airborne regiment, so all the paratroopers were in the same regiment that, and then that they were, they had a company that was French Canadian and then two other companies that were Anglo-Canadians. That was a regiment that was disbanded. And when the, the government decided to disband them, they put a company of parachutists, so with the Maroon Beret, in each of the infantry regiment in Canada. And, and you're correct, Jack, on the west coast, we have the PPCLI. And, you know, Quebec, there's the French Canadian infantry, and in Ontario, there's the RCR Royal Canadian Regiment.

• 7:03Speaker 03

And each of those have a company of parachutists. So I was lucky that, back to my story, is I did battle school, then I, I checked in my, my infantry regiment. And you don't go from being a new guy to the paraccompany. You need to earn your way to be sent on parachute courses or airborne school and join that. But, but somehow, I tell you, it's a true story, somehow in two thousand, they, they needed bodies, so they took, I think that I don't remember, five or six of us

• 7:43Speaker 03

from battle school, straight to the paralines, to the paraccompany, which was a big deal back then.

• 7:51Jack Murphy?

And you didn't have your wings yet, so.

• 7:54Speaker 03

  We paid.

• 7:57Speaker 03

You do not, you do not show it up because they, it's not like I magically had my airborne calls.

• 8:03Jack Murphy?

  Right.

• 8:03Speaker 03

So I remember showing up there with the, we have green berets for infantry. And I show up in the paralines, new guy, day one, with five of my bodies, maybe less than that, uh, uh, with a green beret for. They couldn't load us on the airborne calls for another few months. I was, you know, seventeen, skinny. And, and new guy, you're in the pair lines with a green beret, like we couldn't, we. It's funny, you know, like all these little cultural things, like we had to take our beret off as soon as we walk in the lines. Cause then you're getting smoked. It was illegal, you know, anyway. So, uh.

• 8:46Speaker 03

Um, better part of my career was, or the first part of my career was five years, um, right, right into Paris. So basically, my, my infancy was, was parachutist for five years in the Vengus. Uh, deployed Bosnia and Afghanistan, yeah.

• 9:06Jack Murphy?

Tell, tell us about the first one to Bosnia, what that was like for you?

• 9:10Speaker 03

It was, you know, I didn't know nothing. Uh, and it was, it was within a few months, it was even before my maroon beret, actually, now I recall. And we deployed to Tommy Slav grav in two thousand and one, um, in Bosnia. Obviously, it's getting blurry now, it's, it's decades ago, but, um. I remember not being, it might be the reason later on that, that I joined, uh, special forces, but. Uh, I, I remember being, you remember, I watched Full Metal Jacket. And now I'm, I'm in the infantry. And I'm thinking it, it's gonna be war, like Vietnam at the end of the movie, but. And, and it was peacekeeping, correct, right? In two thousand and one, the war was over.

• 9:56Speaker 03

With peacekeeping, so for the six, seven months we were there, we would switch from, whenever. You know, most soldiers know that, regular soldiers know that, we would rotate from gate duty to patrolling peace. You know, peace, stabilizing operations, so we would patrol. And then the third phase would be QRF for those patrols. And, and then it was seven months, just you had the gate, or you're doing patrols, that nothing happens. Or you're QRF and you don't get out, you know? So, so I, to be honest, yeah, I was proud, you know, I was seventeen, eighteen year old. Hanging out with the boys in Tommy Slav grav, but. More money, because for us it's tax-free when you deploy.

• 10:41Speaker 03

I was happy. But it didn't scratch the hedge, right? It was like, wow. Just that. Right?

• 10:48Jack Murphy?

And then presumably not too long after that, nine eleven happens and Canada joins the multinational coalition. How was that kind of like transitional period for you? It's, you know, Canada's going to war now.

• 11:03Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, exactly. So that that that happened right after this, like, I think I was still on, I was still on leave when when nine eleven happened. And

• 11:16Speaker 03

again, normal infantry, we didn't think we deployed right away, they send the PPCI. The infantry that was there from two thousand two, yeah, they deployed, so it wasn't us, it was the West Coast.

• 11:32Speaker 03

Then, but then when we knew that the PPCI were in the mountains, you know, patrolling the mountains and and part of of the mission. Then it got our head shed and our commanders, oh, wow, yeah, we're going to war. Right? So I had to wait, it was Roto two, I believe, so so I think it went PPCI and then they send the RCR, but now it was in Kabul. So so the initial push that they needed the PPCI, and then, I don't know, but what I heard is the PPCI or our regular infantry did phenomenal in two thousand two, right, supporting the efforts.

• 12:14Speaker 03

But then I don't, again, I was a young soldier, right? I don't know what happened, but then but then it it was just Kabul and and Kabul was secured at that point, remember? Two thousand three, Kabul was kind of secured, Taliban were hurt. And it and it kind of was a repeat for us in a way. It was somewhat of a repeat of what I did in Bosnia. It was keeping Kabul safe. So my my my regular infantry time was

• 12:42Speaker 03

It was quite peaceful. It wasn't moved to Kandahar and and that's when the Kenyan forces got really hit hard with, you know, fighting the Taliban and Al Qaeda. It was in Kandahar. So my tour for Afghanistan under a regular infantry unit was in Kabul. And it was a rinse repeat from Bosnia. No- nothing happened there. Did gate, there there was an OP at their camp, Julian, there was OPs north and south of it. So you would rotate from gate duty to OP duty, so you'd spend a week basically sleeping on camp, but not just, you know.

• 13:21Jack Murphy?

Yeah, yeah, up in a tower somewhere.

• 13:24Speaker 03

Yeah. And then you do patrol for a bit and then rotate. Um, look, I I'm not saying that I I don't regret my time in the infantry. It sounds like that when I speak now, but we're talking five years that they made me a man. Like, the the training in infantry is hard, you know that. You know, you're hard and you do hard things and you do a lot of physical activity. And you go to the gym, so and and you you had great leaders too, at some point, you know, there's great infantry leaders that I respect that that remember I joined in seventeen. So to me, that's where I grew into a man.

• 14:07Jack Murphy?

  Right, yeah.

• 14:08Speaker 03

Yeah. Um, and and I wouldn't I wouldn't have passed uh the rest of my career, I think, not having not having been grown and forged by by this this regiment that I respect so much.

• 14:25Speaker 03

But but the two missions I did with with uh uh the the infantry was pe- you know, not eventful. After that, though, the guys from the Red Army.

• 14:40Speaker 03

  When they moved to Caddo.

• 14:42Speaker 04

• 18:18Jack Murphy?

So for you, coming back home, and you know, it sounds again, like you didn't quite scratch the itch that you had, didn't have a hard combat deployment just yet. When does this thing called CSOR, when's the first time you hear about it?

• 18:36Speaker 03

Yeah, and again, we don't know each other that much, but I like good stories, you know, I'm the guy, I like to entertain the room and stuff. So it is a good story. It happened.

• 18:52Speaker 03

Two thousand, was it two thousand, no, two thousand six, yeah, or or late two thousand five, anyway. Be- because I I wasn't scratching the hedges, I was discussing. Then, you know, I was I was a corporal by that, by by then. Got promoted in Afghanistan, yeah, so I was a corporal, so it was the second rank for us, right? And getting some experience in the infantry. And I I'm discussing, I remember with two other guys, they're still serving, so with the regiments, I won't say their names, but I'm I'm with two guys. And we're like, oh, we're gonna, we're gonna, you you know, obviously of JTF two. I'm like, oh, we're gonna scream for a JTF two. I'm like, okay.

• 19:34Speaker 03

So we we initial paperwork for your chain of command to review and then send. To send it to Ken's off com. But then, so so that happened, I I remember, it happened, I think on a Friday. Okay, yeah, we're putting the paperwork in, you know, that's. And on the Monday, so I guess Monday morning, the leadership put in each of the company's entrance. They put a uh A A four piece of paper, you know, a little poster, but just on a normal printer. Piece of paper. It was like a recruiting poster. Or something new, right?

• 20:16Speaker 03

Uh, and I I I don't remember the exact details, but it was questions, so so there was no symbol of a unit, it was just like. A soldier from World War Two, because you know, our lineage is with First Special Service Force, the Black Devils. I found that out later, but but there's, I think it was the Black Devil on there. And it was questioned, uh Jack, so it was like, are you into direct action? Are you interested in, yeah, yeah, they got us, right? Are you into special reconnaissance, you know, special warfare? Do you wanna work in extremely small teams, like questions like that, maybe five or six questions? And and if so, uh send an email to this.

• 21:00Speaker 03

I I was sold, I didn't even know what it was, I'm like, that's gotta be better than JTF two. You know, they they they got a, they got a hundred and seventy five of us, I guess.

• 21:11Jack Murphy?

  Wow.

• 21:13Speaker 03

Yeah, so it was open to the entire military, so even Air Force, Navy. You know, you could, I guess they recruited through the entire CAF, Canadian Armed Forces. And that that that process was pretty quick to, I think the email was sent to my warrant officer. You know, I said, anyway, they tracked down who I was, and then the three guys that we decided to do it. And and it was literally, I remember saying to these two guys, we're saying to each other, first unit, you know, you're cocky when you're young, and like, first unit that replies gets us, you know?

• 21:53Speaker 03

So CSO was bang. I think the next week, we're starting to do physical, initial physical tests.

• 22:00Jack Murphy?

  Oh, wow.

• 22:01Speaker 03

Psychologist test. So so that's why I ended up in CSO.

• 22:06Jack Murphy?

As you're kind of like, um, yeah, and Bush, if you can lean a little bit or scoot your chair a little bit further forward, because I think we lose words once in a while. You might be just a little too far from the computer.

• 22:17Speaker 03

Yeah, okay, I didn't even, um.

• 22:20Jack Murphy?

  You're you're, I think you're good.

• 22:22Speaker 03

I can't see my screen anymore, though.

• 22:24Jack Murphy?

Yeah, no, put it, put it back, because otherwise we're kind of looking up at you. I think right there is fine.

• 22:30Speaker 03

  Yeah, okay.

• 22:30Jack Murphy?

Yeah, yeah, all good. Thank you.

• 22:32Speaker 03

  We're closer.

• 22:33Jack Murphy?

Yeah, yeah. So as you're, as you're going through this, this process, it sounds like they did have, did they have some sort of assessment and selection, like, protocol already established?

• 22:48Speaker 03

Again, it's getting quite far in my memory, but it was, it was fast. I remember doing test after test. They they had a selection process. We'll get to that, you know, just soon in the story, but but I think they mimic what JTF2 was already doing for for pre-pre-selecting, you know, like, interview a psych psychologist. Initial fitness test was pretty easy. I answered some questions. So so I think that was just carbon copy from what CANS of COM, which was not created yet. It got created at the same time as CSO, I think. Because at first, it was JTF2, you know, and their ELOs.

• 23:32Speaker 03

And I think at the same time as when the regiment stood up in April two thousand six, I think Ken Sofcom became a thing because now there's two men over eleven. So it gave them the reason to have a command, you know, I I think that's how the story went. But uh, yeah, it was, there was a process. I remember going through a process. Uh, um, we, we, like I said, so, so everything was successful for, for all of us from, from this par company. We, um, I, I remember as a young man finding it pretty cool, the entire process because it was really secretive. From a poster, send an email, your chain of command will handle everything.

• 24:14Speaker 03

And then we got the, I don't know what you guys call it, you know, re- report duty.

• 24:19Jack Murphy?

  Oh, yeah, orders.

• 24:22Speaker 03

Orders. Okay. So let's use that word. So we, we got orders. Um, let's say it was winter and, and then by April of two thousand six, we got orders of next week, you're reporting to the base of Pidawawa, Ontario. More to follow. That's it. Bring, bring your, your rucksack and bring this, you know, kit list. Hey, man, like as a young man, you know, by then I was what, you know, twenty, twenty-one? Whatever, twenty-two.

• 24:52Jack Murphy?

Yeah, and it has, it has a secret.

• 24:53Speaker 03

  Took one car.

• 24:56Speaker 03

And drove, drove eight hours to a base we've never been to. It's a, it's an experience, right?

• 25:01Jack Murphy?

Yeah, it has a little bit of a secret agent flair to it. Uh, you don't know what you're doing.

• 25:05Speaker 03

They really did that at the beginning. Yeah, I tell you.

• 25:09Speaker 03

And, and show up, have to find a building, you know, whatever building name, find a building. And then there's some, some guys in, in uniform there. We didn't know if it was the cadre or whoever. They're, they're in civvies. Remember, I'm in the infantry. Clean cut, uniform all the time. Now there's a bunch of guys in civvies, civilian attire. Okay, who are you? Find you on a, on a list. Okay, you're in that room, you know, so it was pretty set up. They, they put us basically in barracks. And it kicked off, I think it was a Friday, I believe. Yeah, because we got drunk that weekend. Yeah. So showed up on a Friday, partied for one last time for months and, and then, uh, started on a Monday.

• 25:56Jack Murphy?

  And

• 25:56Speaker 03

  Pretty good experience, yeah.

• 25:58Jack Murphy?

  Yeah.

• 25:58Speaker 03

And then the parade, the first morning, just strangers. Minus the two guys I brought with me from Quebec. Just, I think that was that, like, one hundred and seventy-five, something like that. New guys.

• 26:13Jack Murphy?

What was the selection process like? And were the instructors JTF Two cadre?

• 26:19Speaker 03

  Mostly, yeah.

• 26:20Jack Murphy?

  Okay, yeah, that makes sense.

• 26:22Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. It was mostly, you know, for the, the hands and feet, for sure. It was JTF Two guys. And then I remember some specialties would be, you know, I, I remember when, when we, I'll give you an example. When we did the basic demo, door charges and blah, blah, blah. It, it was, I think, an engineer from the regular army. Because it's basic, right? So, so there was, there was at certain points, you know, when we did climbing. It was AMO from, what, I don't remember where PPLI, I think. But, but yes, the, the, you know, course warrant officer, course officer. Most instructors were, were from, from JTF Two.

• 27:08Jack Murphy?

  Uh.

• 27:08Speaker 03

And, and, I know you said selection, so.

• 27:11Jack Murphy?

  Yeah.

• 27:12Speaker 03

There is a proper selection for decades now. But the first course, and, and, and that's when, you know, I was young again. I didn't really understand the politics, but I guess the government back then, you know, I'm not privy to that. But, but really CSO got stood up because JTF Two was saying, look, we're in Afghanistan now. We need a support element. Rangers, you know, to do the cordon and support them in DAs and blah, blah, blah. So I think that, that it was government saying, okay.

• 27:49Speaker 03

Here's money, you got the approval to start this new unit, but but it needs to happen now. Politics, maybe they were running out of time to do it, elections coming, I don't remember. But it was pretty fast because they got the approval, a bag of money, and make it happen. So they didn't have time to put the one hundred and seventy five people through a pipeline of whatever selection they need to invent now, they can't copy the J K F two one because it's two different separate mandate. So so what we did is we started calls, so day one, I don't really recall exactly that the the course layout, but day one, let's say.

• 28:32Speaker 03

They separated us in in teams, so basically companies. And and we would do phase one, these guys do phase two, and then we swap. So everybody's trained at the same level and then we move to the next step. But every week, at least once or twice a week, there would be something called an evolution. And it was basically a selection event, right? So everybody starts the course, if you get my my story, everybody could start the course. Without having done all the phobia tests, you know, all the all the tests that you look at, the psychology or decision making.

• 29:12Speaker 03

They did it during the call, so so what was weird is that a guy could do well at hands and feet. But then on week number twelve, finally he gets tested for phobia and they discover, oh, you got a phobia, boom, gone. You know, it's weird, right?

• 29:31Jack Murphy?

  Right.

• 29:32Speaker 03

Guys would be taken off course because they failed an evolution, a selection event. Halfway through the course, because that's the only time they got to test for this specific skill. It is really a weird. Uh, I find it weird now that I'm educated and I did my career, I'm like, oh, yes.

• 29:51Jack Murphy?

Yeah, they they were trying to build an aircraft while in flight, basically.

• 29:56Speaker 03

Yes, you perfect way to say it, perfect way to say it.

• 29:59Jack Murphy?

  Yeah.

• 30:01Speaker 03

And that was the only year, yeah, I think, or maybe they did that for two evolutions, but after that there was pre-selection, selection, then board decide if you go on course and then course.

• 30:15Jack Murphy?

So presumably you make it through the selection events and get selected for this unit. Can you tell us a little bit more about like what C source mission set? I mean, you did touch upon it already a little bit, but I think maybe the mandate you said shifted a little bit as the years went on.

• 30:33Speaker 03

It did. Look, now it's 2025, almost 2026. I've been retired for a long time. I don't know the mandate switch already, or you know, or I guess that easy way to as far as iridinous, expeditionary, special fair experts, DA and special reconnaissance that, you know, and I think is your US base. If if I don't like to because every unit is different, but we were kind of mentioning that at the beginning before we went live, but mash

• 31:17Speaker 03

the Rangers with the Green Berets, Special Forces, you know, put them together and that's that's the closest I could say, you know.

• 31:29Jack Murphy?

Right. They have they have the DA, but also the

• 31:32Speaker 03

Experts that do special warfare at the same time.

• 31:36Jack Murphy?

And they also do like the advising, like foreign, we've called it foreign internal defense.

• 31:41Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. How do we call it again? But I know exactly what you're saying. Yeah. Foreign defense.

• 31:50Jack Murphy?

Going overseas and training friendly forces and things like that.

• 31:53Speaker 03

Yeah. Yeah. And we really cut our teeth later in Afghanistan. So that, you know, we finished Afghanistan for us. It was 2013. I think we closed the mission to towards the end of, you know, the last, let's say the last four, four years of that mission, we were really cutting our teeth into the triple A, you know, advisors as a company. That's all we called it. And then we back then. And and and more more recently, the last decade, Iraq against uh Daesh did a lot of uh buy with through with them. That's another word we like to use. Um but yeah, look,

• 32:35Speaker 03

for for your, you know, majority of our audience, i- i- if you would take the Rangers and join them with with the Green Berets, Special Forces, um it's it's pretty good comparison with CSO.

• 32:50Jack Murphy?

Um, so then tell us about kind of like the first combat deployment for CSO. When when does that start coming on the horizon?

• 32:59Speaker 03

Right after the first course, like I said, they were um the new command and JTF two is hungry to to get a bit of support. Um, so two thousand and seven was my first uh the, you know, the stand up parade. So the first course being done was August two thousand and six. And I was in Kandahar. I don't know if you heard that base, Graceland, was where JTF two and uh was was based and close by, I think, SEAL Team Six at a compound, Gecko, I think it was called. Um, so I was in there, I think, February two thousand and seven. So, you know,

• 33:40Speaker 03

we we did a big ramp up too. So basically two course, one after the other, because the the stand up course, you know, the pipeline and then pre-deployment training right after. I remember I had a week off. And then we're on pre-deployment training for a few months, then leave, then in Kandahar. Um, so first deployment with CSO was in two thousand and seven. Uh, in Kandahar, um, the mission set of of, um, how was it called this up?

• 34:12Speaker 03

I don't remember the name of the mission, anyway, this this rotation that I was on. Um, it was uh attached to JTF Two, so we're working for them. I I believe, just like the Rangers would be attaching themselves to Delta, I'm not too sure, but. Uh, we'd be in support of JTF Two operation and and their mandate was definitely DA's night night raids. On uh HVTs, MVTs, um. At that time, the regular infantry battalions were getting hit hard by IEDs. So I remember that first tour, um, the nights that we deployed was targeting um.

• 34:55Speaker 03

IED facilitators, you know, uh, leadership for IED makers um at night, obviously. And uh, it's quite busy, you know, again, though, that tour is pretty far in my head, but uh. Uh, I'd say we'd get out once, twice a week. Lot lots of, I think it's the same for you guys, lots of. Spooling up for an op and then something change either their stack or the intel changes and then I'll stand down. You know, so we did a lot of stand up radio checks and then we don't get the green light. But but at least once or twice a week.

• 35:33Jack Murphy?

Were you scratching the itch at this point?

• 35:37Speaker 03

Uh, not quite, and it was, yeah, more. You know, I definitely felt that I joined something special, but remember, Jack, it was our first tour. Next to a proven, you know, uh, tier one, we don't really use tier, tier one unit, so. We're the re- the new retarded brother. And I say it how it is now, retired, you know, uh, the new guys that enter, you know. I got lots of friends in JTF Two and I deployed with them many times. Great, you know, great tier one unit, I believe. Um, they were pretty pissed off, most of them.

• 36:21Speaker 03

They were not the only guys on the block now.

• 36:25Jack Murphy?

But I thought they, I thought they wanted you.

• 36:28Jack Murphy?

You know, I thought they wanted you. They requested this unit be created.

• 36:31Speaker 03

I, I guess the, the, the, the leaders saw the need. But when you go down to the guy that's on the ground, you know? And I'm a funny guy. It's funny now. It wasn't funny then, but. The assaulter down on the ground that joined JTF Two and he's a new guy too. But then he sees these new guys that less equipped a bit. We don't have all the specialized, you know, we didn't have, there was a disparity there with kit. We don't have the same budget. So, so anyway, I'm not saying they treated us like slaves. That's not what I'm saying, but, but the, the culture, it wasn't, ah, welcome, boys. We needed you. It was more like. You stand there, there, you little new guy, new unit.

• 37:16Speaker 03

So, so there was a lot of that going on. And it's, it's all fun and games now, but back then.

• 37:23Speaker 03

You know, you just finish it. It was, it was tough course, tough, long months of, you know? And, and now you think you made it, but then you show up on a mission. And then the, the, the guys that you're supporting, they don't love you. They don't hate you, but they just don't really want you there. So you go out at night on a head and they make sure that, you know, the blocking falls. And you stay there and if they're shooting inside a structure, you make sure you stay out there. We don't need you, you know? Watch your back. There was a lot of that. Still a good lesson learned. We did a lot of training that, that camp had great training facility. You know, and because you're also in Canada, the, the training's a bit more realistic.

• 38:07Speaker 03

There's less rules, you know, we have a base back on same as stateside, right? There's regulations and range wardens. So the training was great. We had, I don't know if you visited, did you visit Graceland or Gecko or this complex? It was, it was a great complex, the, the best base I've ever been on throughout all my, all my deployments. Because we had a huge backyard.

• 38:32Speaker 03

It's a big mountain range, basically, but it's all ours. And so maneuver, you know, the ground was used so we could do whatever. Three sixty maneuvering the bombers, machine guns, we were kinda, we were needed to be the heavy weapon experts. So spend a lot of time in the turrets on the fifty cal machine guns, you know, carburet staff, mortar, we did a lot of training. And it was as much as you wanted, you know, as much ammo as you wanted.

• 39:02Jack Murphy?

  Conex containers full of ammo.

• 39:05Speaker 03

Yeah, so, so I had a great memory of, of that first store, right? Cause it is, I was, I was young, you know, corporal still, not, not a leader. And, and you're telling me that I can leave my room with my C eight, you know, my carbine, my pistol. I can just grab ammo, walk to the range by myself and shoot for three hours? Yeah, by myself, just need to check in with, you know, check in with HQ saying, I'm range number two going live. But to me, it was, I was a rock star, you know, much. So we spent all our time either in the gym or on the range. Which, if you think about it, grew our skills even more than on the course. And then

• 39:47Speaker 03

the dashman commander doing the dashman training on, on himself, doesn't need to fill paperwork. So it's kind of fast track our skill level or, or increase our skill level, even if we're not out of wire working. We're training at a high level inside the water. Does it make sense?

• 43:59Jack Murphy?

And so you did a couple deployments to Afghanistan. I'm just kind of curious, like, how did you see that mission sort of evolve as CSOR matures, but also as the battlefield changes too, I imagine?

• 44:12Speaker 03

Yeah, it did. So that was the first one. I liked it. It wasn't scratching the itch yet, but we are an infant unit and I understand the steps we need to go through. The leash was still on, if we can use that terminology, you know? We work for another unit. So there was a few rotation of that, you know, that I wasn't on there, but I did mine. And then there's a few evolution of this. And then I'm not too sure what happened. I'm not sure why. But where CSOR really got their first kind of glimpse of what it is

• 44:52Speaker 03

to be self-sufficient and do operation on your own was in 2009. Again, I don't know why the decision was made that. For two rotation, I think JTF two was busy somewhere, that I don't know. But it was CSO only in in that camp, Greysland. So there was either one or one and a half, anyway, there's many months. That there was no JTF two assaulters with us, so. And I did this, the second end of this portion. So my two thousand nine, what I'm saying. My two thousand nine, I deployed twice in two thousand nine, I did one combined, but anyway, I did, I did three months of this. Portion of CSO doing their solo op, it was us.

• 45:39Speaker 03

We weren't kind of approved yet to do um. Night ops, you know, like going for HVTs, yeah, hard knocks and, you know. We didn't do that, what we did, what they, they tasked us with doing was desert, desert mobility. Old school, you know, SAS stuff, like in trucks in the desert for thirty days. And I, I got a, basically, I replaced a guy that got injured. I was a sniper by then, by then, I did sniper course at some point. So one of the snipers needed to be repat, so, so I took the rest of his, of this portion of his tour. Which was great because I got to live this mobility lifestyle of, so.

• 46:22Speaker 03

This entire tour, we did mobility on, on the, we're, we're tasked in denying. Um. Uh, was it, yes, drugs going out into Pakistan and money coming in to the Taliban. We needed to disrupt that, so spent, spent, I don't recall, I think the longest one was thirty two days.

• 46:45Jack Murphy?

  Wow.

• 46:47Speaker 03

Yeah, it was, no, Jack was amazing. Uh, maybe that's what I like, but. Living out of trucks and, and snipers want ATVs, you know, these six wheelers, Polaris six wheelers. I lived out of that ATV for, yeah, thirty two days in the desert, it was amazing. And, and just disrupting them, so either getting cash, we got like.

• 47:12Speaker 03

  Jing, you know jingle trucks?

• 47:14Jack Murphy?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 47:15Speaker 03

Jingle trucks, load of ashish, like bricks. And it was amazing. I, I, I think it was supported by, um, what's your, uh, drug enforcement agency?

• 47:24Jack Murphy?

  D E A fast teams.

• 47:27Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. It was supported by that in, in some way. I think they would come in in a chopper, take pictures, then we'd burn it all. Anyway, it, it, it, obviously this mission was in support of the US, right? Um, so, so we were supporting them indirectly, I think. But when we would get something big, they would show up for pictures. And, um, it, it was beautiful. Uh, I, I really liked it. Uh, we would get resubbed every week, I think. You know, they would drop. With the R C one thirties, they would drop, uh, loads, what we needed, fuel, food, blah, blah, blah. It was great.

• 48:07Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 48:08Jack Murphy?

And so, yeah, thirty days out there, patrolling constantly, that's a lot.

• 48:15Speaker 03

Yeah, it's a lot, but it was needed because remember, we're still infant. You know, I don't wanna use these words all night, but we're new, we're, we're four years into becoming our, our own thing. Remember, we stood up originally. So, so that is still in play now. So what we've learned. I, I think, and, and again, I'm not, I think we, we took the SAS kind of book because they did a lot of that, right? So I think we, we initially kind of studied when it started, we're like, okay, we, leaguers and other. Mobility T T Ps and blah, blah, blah, which we're not gonna discuss, but.

• 48:58Speaker 03

We, we started somewhere and at the end of these mobilities, we were extremely good at it and we made our own SOPs. And we became really good at it. So, so it was needed. It's another tool in our toolbox that we, we, we, we sorted out and we did ourselves. And then now it's, it's in our books and that's what we teach our new guys. Because we have act, but now guys are retiring, but we were passing that knowledge now on course. You know, even though they're not doing it anymore in the world, we have this knowledge, it's real experience that we did ourselves. It's great. Loved it.

• 49:36Jack Murphy?

I gotta ask too, because uh, our viewers will love it. What uh, since you were a sniper on this deployment, which rifle were you carrying? Was it the three, three, eight?

• 49:46Speaker 03

Yeah, three, three, yeah. And we had a, a great three, three, eight, two's um, the Prairie Gunworks PGW DTI. Yeah. And it was, first it was a McMillan chassis and when, when we had this one, um, I love this thing. As you know, tag driver. Um, so my primary was uh, AR-10. On the quad, you know, I would add my AR-10 right on my end of balls. And then we had, we constructed things like these, these ATVs, we worked on them ourselves. So I could live off it. So a big Barrett box at the back, you know, compartmentalized, we can food there, ammo there, easy access.

• 50:31Speaker 03

Okay, I'm seventy-two in the front with my AR-10. So it's love, and each quad was different. And yet you're correct. So three, three, eight was, we had one fifty cal, McMillan fifty cal per detachment. Our detachment was four quads. And we're not gonna go in tactics, but basically picture this sniper, they work in four. And um, on, on these quads, and then we've had one fifty cal or two um, per, per team of four. Each sniper with their three, three, each sniper with a semi auto platform. And then, yeah.

• 51:07Speaker 03

It's great, uh, one look and highlight of that we.

• 51:13Speaker 03

I don't want to go into tactics, but. Pi- picture, you know, and, and we, we kind of, nobody told us how to do it, but. How do you stop a convoy of jingle trucks? That you're picking up, you know, it's desert, right? We're in the desert. There's no towns. S- small villages once in a while, but it's really bare, flat, so- some dunes, but. Anyway, you, you see a, an obvious convoy of five jingle trucks, six, six, seven, 10 K away. How do, how do you tackle that? How do you stop them, you know, VI's? No choppers coming in to, to stop it, you know, it's just MVs that are slow in the sand? And ATVs that are fast.

• 51:55Speaker 03

So I'm not going to discuss how we did it, but we found like a pretty cool way to just, you know. Stop them, catch up, blah, blah, blah, overwatch it. It's, it's great. So we'd get excited, you know, you wouldn't see anything for two, three days. And then you pick one up and then you gotta go after it.

• 52:12Jack Murphy?

So, so this was just like a, a fairly prolific smuggling route?

• 52:17Speaker 03

Yeah. Oh, yeah. They, they were moving, uh, drugs, uh, drugs out and, and cash in. We didn't. Uh, to be honest with you, I'm always honest. I, I don't remember us. Cause there's, you know, we'd separate ourselves, but I don't remember us getting cash. We got a lot of drugs.

• 52:34Jack Murphy?

  Hmm.

• 52:35Speaker 03

Yeah. Yeah. So the cash, I'm not sure if they were using the same routes that we kind of vectored in. But we definitely vectored in the drugs.

• 52:45Jack Murphy?

So after, uh, Afghanistan, um, what can you tell us about Libya?

• 52:52Speaker 03

Um, but you know what? Look, it's, it's not a secret. I got a medal for it. Like, you know, everybody got a medal for it. Uh, so, so it's a known operation. Um. You, you remember in, in 2011, the 17 revolution?

• 53:07Jack Murphy?

  When Gaddafi had it.

• 53:09Speaker 03

Yeah. So, you know, Libyans were sick of Gaddafi, uh, revolted against him. The air force was heavily involved into supporting the effort. The coalition effort to support certain militias, um.

• 53:25Speaker 03

And that's the so what I'm gonna say is it that that there was another first, you know, for for CSO. It was the first time, remember I I mentioned that we are the eye readiness. Uh, you know, eye readiness deployable unit, uh, DA unit for Canada. So so this one was the first time that the pager went off. We had pagers back then. That was our first uh time that pager goes off and I don't remember the exact specifics, but fast enough that the ROEs and the briefs were on the plane, you know, so I don't want to divulge how fast we you we can deploy and stuff, but.

• 54:07Jack Murphy?

Yeah, you were out the door very fast.

• 54:09Speaker 03

And fast enough that you're getting brief on what you're gonna do on the plane.

• 54:14Jack Murphy?

And so, I mean, yeah, it's a rapid deployment. Um, wh- what are you guys like, what is what's your idea of the mission um as you know, you you're learning more?

• 54:26Speaker 03

  Uh, sorry?

• 54:27Jack Murphy?

Wh- what was um sort of your understanding of the mission that you were going to?

• 54:32Speaker 03

Um, uh, uh, that that's that's definitely, and plus it's past operations, not a secret. It's we we were gonna go there um in civilian, working for uh foreign affairs. And we were to uh assist, but first analyze and and assist with the reintegration of our head of mission into Libya. Gaddafi was on the goal, Tripoli was kind of like the green, not green zone, but the safe place, Benghazi. It flipped now, right? But back then Benghazi was far west, really dangerous. And and Tripoli was kind of stable under this militia that was supported by the coalition.

• 55:17Speaker 03

And I I guess back then we had a head of mission, so not an ambassador, but a head of mission that was keen into going back in there and showing face. And hey, you know, I'm back in Libya and we're supporting the revolution. And we were tasked into prepping uh for her arrival.

• 55:37Speaker 03

It it it move into other things that I don't wanna discuss, but that was that was the the support that we had to do for this operation.

• 55:46Jack Murphy?

And I mean, from your point of view, how did it, how did it go? I mean, this is still sort of a new thing for the unit.

• 55:52Speaker 03

Yeah, again, another new for Bush, you know, and and and again, in different ways, I I loved it, you know, I love being in the desert, I love the stuff that we spoke about before. This one was different because, again, for a young regiment, it was the first time, we didn't have a cover story, really, but we did, we we weren't C S O R coming in. We were with Foreign Affairs, and we're just here on a diplomatic mission, and we're consil consil carry and blah, blah, blah, you know, and civvies. So, again, it's a first for us. So, did we do stuff wrong? Yeah. But but we learned a lot. So,

• 56:33Speaker 03

first time, I believe it was, yeah, but it was the first time there was a pager call and we're deploying quick. Not sure if it was the first time we were uh in in plain clothes. Not sure about that, but uh it was my first time. I really enjoyed it. Um, I can tell you, and and like most soft unit, you think outside the box, right? Everybody likes to say that. But but that's the first time that me, Bush, noticed that, hey, I I'm with a, I'm with the right crew here. Like, we we think outside the box. And I'll give you an example. This this deployment for me lasted about three, four months.

• 57:15Speaker 03

And we were always having trouble moving from A to B because the militia would would have many, many checkpoints, you know, um. And what's that movie in Benghazi?

• 57:31Jack Murphy?

  Oh, yeah, I know, um.

• 57:34Speaker 03

Kind of a movie, but it but it's a great story, because it's true, um.

• 57:39Jack Murphy?

  Thirteen hours.

• 57:40Speaker 03

Yeah, please, thank you. So, you know that the the the opening part of that movie, that checkpoint, that's really tense? You know, and he's like pointing at the sky like UAVs are gonna kill you if you kill me, like the opening scene, right? When he picks him up in the airport, and there's there's a standoff as a checkpoint? It was, that's the real, like, that's pretty legit. The checkpoints were really tense and you'd stay an hour, two hours, you know, and it's, it was, ah, and you can see them, because triple E was in Benghazi. I wasn't scared of them kidnapping me or killing me, it's just another checkpoint.

• 58:19Jack Murphy?

  Right.

• 58:19Speaker 03

They just made for no reason, right? And there's guns on you and they have zero muscle awareness. And so, so it's dangerous to get shot by ND, you know? And, and go back to my thinking outside the bus, we just got fed up. So, we're like, we, we noticed that they were trying to, because they had a collation of us behind them, they were trying to be legit. They weren't, but they, they were trying to look like a military, you know? So they had an ID. We started noticing, and it wasn't at first when we showed up there, but I think as the media's involved and they wanna look like they're legitimate force in Libya, they, we started noticing IDs. And, and one day we're like, you know what?

• 59:04Speaker 03

We took picture of their ID and then we're in the hotel room. Just, you know, scanners and stuff, like we made her fake IDs. We're like, we'll try that. So our, our real picture with their little, you know, the Libyan flag. And, uh, how did we call it? It was a diplomatic support, something. Anyway, me and me, because I was always in Paris, so me and another, another is still serving, but go on Jay. Me and Jay are, and, and because the nature of our work, we're kind of the ones, the most on the road, whatever. We're like, we're gonna test this. Really? Yeah, yeah. So, so then we started showing our IDs and they're like, confuse you, you know?

• 59:50Speaker 03

Big smile, they're like, welcome to the team, boys.

• 59:56Speaker 03

We're going through checkpoints like no other. And they never, they never, uh, yeah, battered.

• 1:00:02Jack Murphy?

In your, in your defense, Butch, uh, you know, you made fake IDs, but they were fake to begin with. Uh, I'm pretty sure the militia just made up, made up their whole bullshit ID cards.

• 1:00:14Speaker 03

  Feel better.

• 1:00:16Speaker 03

It worked. Um, another thing actually that just popped in my head, I like these kind of stories. Backtrack, backtracked our first day in there. So, so how it worked, uh, there's no problem saying that, how it worked, we didn't fly right from Canada into Tripoli. We needed some uh approvals still to come, can you know how how fast it was? The the politicians needed to catch up, to make all, you know, okay, yes, now we got green light to go. Oh, I got you. So, so we went to a third location, okay? For for, so so it was fast to leave and then it took like two weeks to to get the final approval. Right, it's typical, right?

• 1:01:01Speaker 03

They pre-stage us, basically. So we're pre-stayed somewhere and um in a another country and we're there, bag of money, you know, renting rooms, blah blah. But we deployed, I'm a sniper then, that's that's where we're there, sniper for supporting case. So um I have a three three eight, we just discussed it, yeah, it's collapsible, but I have this PGW three three eight. There with my carbine, my pistol, yeah, pistol, okay, concealable. We're we're there as diplomatic support, we're not soldiers. So then uh they were too into this arrival in the third location. Uh Jay and I look at each other like.

• 1:01:47Speaker 03

  How are we gonna?

• 1:01:50Speaker 03

Our suitcase, like it's too long for a travel suitcase. Like, how are we gonna smuggle that in the country? Oh, okay. I should, you're gonna think I'm lying, I'm not. We literally went desperado and we found in that third third country, we found guitar cases. And and we're like, hey, it's perfect, it fits in a in a guitar case, so like, we bought guitars there, guitar in the trash. Boom, uh, long gun in the guitar case. Uh, you know, the the the carbine fit in the backpack, but whatever, I'm fast fast forwarding to, okay. Go time, we're we're coming in Tripoli, so land convoy to the hotel that we selected that would stay.

• 1:02:37Speaker 03

And and then again, going back to these militia, they took control of all the five star, four star, where media would go and all the western people would go, because there's a lot of real diplomatic efforts there and lots of media. So where the white people stay, they would secure it to show, look, we're on your side and we're securing your hotel, which was needed. They had like scan, like airport scanners and in the reception. Like beep beep beep, plus plus the scanner, and then you had to go through this. So, I don't know his name, but we'll describe him to you. Is Jay and I show up for check in as a diplomatic agent of Canada.

• 1:03:21Speaker 03

But I like music, so I bring my guitar everywhere. Right? And, but then we didn't plan, there was no recce, so we don't know we're gonna go through this. In hindsight, yes, and a recce team, oh guys, you know, we got this to go through. No, no clue. So we show up. And um, well, I look at Jim, well, there's no turning back here, so. I put my guitar on this airport uh uh scanner. It goes through and I'll describe him to you. His nickname for the, because we we became almost friends. His nickname was um Double Inverted Glock, because this kid. This this like fifteen year old kid had two glocks, not one, two.

• 1:04:04Speaker 03

But he had Legolsters, but inverted, so that he could draw like this.

• 1:04:09Jack Murphy?

Frost draw. Yeah, I love it.

• 1:04:12Speaker 03

Name is Double Glock Inverted, whatever. But that's the first time I meet him. And he's he's that day behind the scanner. And I saw my guitar go.

• 1:04:25Speaker 03

All the way to the end, so I'm like, yes. But then.

• 1:04:30Speaker 03

Back, back in, and he he's looking at the screen, I'm like. Now, now in my young self mind, I'm like, oh, what is gonna be the option here? Like, you know, am I gonna, because I'm concealed, I'm like. I'm going through the step of what are my options if he pulls the double draw.

• 1:04:51Speaker 03

No, no, Jack, he looked at the screen.

• 1:04:56Speaker 03

He looked up at me, looked back down, and it's like he saw the coolest thing in the world. His eyes were like that big. And he looked, he looked at me and he's like,

• 1:05:12Speaker 03

I know your secret, you know? So then I knew we were good. He's like, he didn't say a thing, he just winked. And he's like, yeah, so every morning when we'd go do whatever we wanted to go and I'm coming out, my guitar is like, wink, wink, all the time, wink, wink, anyway. And I'm psyched. That's how it is, right? Like, are we compromised? Is there? We did discuss that. Is there a threat to us now? If they switch, you know, they know we're not, we were saying, we're young, so you, we decided to just go with it and it was perfect, you know? We moved, anyway, it took about two weeks, we moved to proper team houses.

• 1:05:56Speaker 03

So it was two weeks of like, if they turn, they know directly which room to go in, you know, whatever.

• 1:06:04Jack Murphy?

I love the double inverted Glocks. I'm gonna have to remember that one.

• 1:06:08Speaker 03

Yeah, look, I wanted to share that.

• 1:06:14Jack Murphy?

And then, I mean, Libya winds down after three or four months for you, you're returning home.

• 1:06:21Jack Murphy?

Have things kind of notably shifted within CSO that now this is becoming a seasoned unit that's capable of conducting different types of operations?

• 1:06:31Speaker 03

Yeah, it, it, by, by then, we're, because Libya was, like I said, am I correct? It was 2011, right?

• 1:06:38Jack Murphy?

2011 is when Gaddafi died, so it probably took.

• 1:06:41Speaker 03

We were there while he died, so.

• 1:06:43Jack Murphy?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:43Speaker 03

And the day that he died, it was crazy, we're in traffic for like 12 hours because they, they were shooting in the air. Like, jam-packed everywhere and just like three hours of just emptying bags or T-54s.

• 1:06:58Speaker 03

The rule, the rule was, the rule was shoot towards the, the med. It was safe for them, you know, shoot towards the med. Um, I, I, I lost them, but I had videos of us in there. We, we picked T-mouses by the water because we're, we like to swim, you know, we think it's.

• 1:07:16Speaker 03

You had to be at, because they shoot at night, you had to be in at night because the rounds, they come down. Literally like we have, I don't have anymore, but I would have videos of my window open, it's like T, T, T, T, T. Like it's raining? Anyway, so, um, Kadafi died, it was, we were not there when he died, but I mean, the entire uh, country was, was just shooting in the air for like three hours, ridiculous. So, so, uh, two thousand and eleven, uh, we, we are a regiment now and, and we're building our own culture. Um, I don't know if you noticed, there's not many guys on podcasts from CSO, like you said, I'm the first one.

• 1:07:59Speaker 03

A- and, and there's a reason for that, we, we definitely have a culture of do your job and that's it, you know, I don't think, it might change, you know, new, new generation, but this unit of mine is, is really concentrating on making a name for itself, which, which has a great one now. But it, through, throughout the culture was always do your job, shut up. Right, right. I don't think there'll be, there's gonna be, but notebooks. No, and I'm not saying it's bad to do it. People wanna know, but, but this, this culture of ours is really, that's why I'm keeping into like stories and, you know, it's, it's really our culture.

• 1:08:42Speaker 03

One thing I noticed now that I live here in the, the UK, uh, I work alongside retired SAS guys and SAS is like that. It's hard to get stuff out of them. And.

We didn't mimic them. It just happened that it's kind of a culture to, you know? Keep it, keep it to ourselves. So 2011, yes, we were.

• 1:11:01Speaker 03

Teenagers, whatever, you know, we we have some operation that are behind us. We we're learning at every every turn. Um, I'm skipping a lot of special warfare stuff, uh, um, uh, training missions.

• 1:11:16Jack Murphy?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:11:17Speaker 03

You know, those are, those are still happening. Those are constant. Not sure if we're still in the Caribbean, but you know, Caribbean, Africa.

• 1:11:25Jack Murphy?

Are are you allowed to say which countries Canada partners with and does training?

• 1:11:29Speaker 03

  Yeah, uh, which?

• 1:11:31Jack Murphy?

Are you allowed to say which countries that you guys would go and train?

• 1:11:34Speaker 03

There there's some that you can look online. Yeah, you know, Flintlock is a big operation.

• 1:11:40Jack Murphy?

  Okay, in Africa, right?

• 1:11:41Speaker 03

Yeah, we are, we are participating in Flintlock. Don't remember the one in the Caribbean, but when the Caribbean, we went to Belize, that was in the news. And and obviously, if we're deployed somewhere kinetic, we will do both, remember, Ranger and and Special Forces? We'll we'll have a team doing AAA and a team doing missions, you know? So so so it's important for us to, when we deploy somewhere, uh, we'll definitely give some skill sets to our partner force. We'll partner with a unit for sure. And, um, yeah, we rarely do stuff by ourselves. We always partner with.

• 1:12:20Jack Murphy?

Yeah. And, you know, a couple of years down the line, now we got this problem called ISIS.

• 1:12:27Speaker 03

  Um, yeah.

• 1:12:28Jack Murphy?

Where where does that kind of come on to the horizon for you and the unit?

• 1:12:32Speaker 03

Um, at two thousand fourteen, you know, there there was this tribe on the top of the mound that kicked it off, right?

• 1:12:39Jack Murphy?

  The Yazidis, yeah.

• 1:12:40Speaker 03

Yeah, so so it was immediate. So you guys took the lead on that. I remember that. And, um, and we had Roto Zero, you know, we call rotos by numbers, zero, one, two, three. So so, you know, Roto Zero was in there right away. Uh, first, northern Iraq, you know, just outside of Erbil. And then it, as the war went on, it it went into Mosul, so, uh, in Iraqi territory. But at first, I was with the Bashmargas, right, the Kurds in northern Iraq, Erbil. Um.

• 1:13:18Speaker 03

So two thousand, I think, late two thousand fourteen was the first time we're in there. Um, into two thousand fifteen, um. I have to say it because he's a great friend of mine, but you're aware, we lost green on blue, we lost Andrew Dwarong.

• 1:13:35Jack Murphy?

  Yeah, at a checkpoint.

• 1:13:37Speaker 03

Yeah, so he was on that first course with me, so I knew him well, so, you know, uh, peace be with him. Uh, green on blue, it got mentioned many times in the news, so I don't have to go into it. But, but just bad, not, not on his part, bad decision making. Uh, of, of, of the courage he was going to advise, blah, blah, blah.

• 1:14:00Speaker 03

It was big for us, it was our first loss. Right, we, we, we lost, we, we lost an operator before that to, to a disease. So we, we lost, but first combat loss was, was Drew and our only one.

• 1:14:15Jack Murphy?

  Wow.

• 1:14:17Speaker 03

Yeah, so, i- his name was great, he was a great operator, and, uh.

• 1:14:22Jack Murphy?

It's a, yeah, I remember when it happened, that is a really sad story.

• 1:14:26Speaker 03

At first, you know, in the news, it was, I, I didn't like that, you know.

• 1:14:30Jack Murphy?

I, I, I remember that, that they were trying to make it sound like he blew through the checkpoint or something, yeah.

• 1:14:35Speaker 03

No, I, no, he was doing, uh, unapproved ops.

• 1:14:39Jack Murphy?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I remember this, yeah.

• 1:14:42Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. It, it's not what I thought.

• 1:14:44Jack Murphy?

Yeah. It, it was, it was just a case of like mistaken identity and confusion, right?

• 1:14:49Speaker 03

It was, and, look, quickly, if people don't know, um, this detachment led by Drew. Um, was doing, um, I think it was night vision training, using night optics. With the frontline, because it's right at the frontline, you know, and, and I don't know if your audience know, but. The fight with Daesh, especially with the Pash, it was World War Two trench lines.

• 1:15:13Jack Murphy?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:15:14Speaker 03

Yeah, dead man land and then ISIS on the other side. So he was up on the, the flot, teaching, um, partner force during the day. How to use these things during the day, so it's easier. Hey, I'll come back at night to teach you guys how to use them. But he didn't get told, there was a switch in whatever their unit was switching. And the unit that took over, again, I was in there, so I'm not sure of all the details, but that's all I understand it. Is the unit that took over that evening, the trenches, they they weren't a big tick with Daesh like a few days ago. So they're really on edge.

• 1:15:56Jack Murphy?

  Much, yeah, yeah.

• 1:15:57Speaker 03

So you see what happened? So then these bearded guys come back at night from from their six, you know, from the back. They think they're getting ambushed again, or, you know, so then they open fire.

• 1:16:09Speaker 03

  Yeah, just just sad.

• 1:16:11Jack Murphy?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:13Speaker 03

  That's the gist of it.

• 1:16:14Jack Murphy?

Yeah, um, well, tell us about your experience with the Canadian, uh, where it was Operation Impact, right?

• 1:16:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:16:22Jack Murphy?

What's that first, what first deployment like?

• 1:16:24Speaker 03

Um, I was, I was in two thousand fifteen, mostly summers. I went there in the summer in two thousand fifteen. Um, so shortly after, you know, this debacle. And, um, basically, I I'd say it's

• 1:16:43Speaker 03

one of the highlight of my career that I enjoyed the most because at this point in my career, I'm a detachment commander. So I'm making the calls on the ground. I've got great guys in my detachment. And our operation impact for us was set up is we would have a detachment plus attachments. You know, a team of sniper, a JTAC to this to this core detachment, me and my five guys. And I would be in in charge, basically, for the the time of my rotation. I would be given a partner force, but also given a piece of that flood.

• 1:17:23Speaker 03

So it it was about, let's say, twenty K, twenty kilometer of frontage, fronting it. And that'd be my sector. And so I would deploy from at quarter eleven, that's an hour drive back. And I'd go to my team house, which was in proximity of this sector that I own for the next five, six months. Right? As a sergeant, you know, not an officer, as a sergeant. We would have officer support, they visit the team house and come see the house, but basically, I'm the boss of

• 1:18:03Speaker 03

how many Pesh, you know, Peshmergos that are defending this line. They don't report to me, they report to their officers, but their officers seek my consult. I have meetings with them all the, eh eh, see it, and that's all you need to see it to do proper job is that was my guys, and that's my front line, and I don't let ISIS come through, you know? And how we would impact, uh, the fight, Daesh, is we would leave our team house, and we, I would do a recce, visit all my position and pick, with the intel that these guys are telling me, the officers, I'd pick where to situate myself for a week.

• 1:18:49Speaker 03

We were capped at a week, we couldn't be on the front, front, front line more than a week. So, I would pick flavor of the week, you know? Where's the last time they had a take, did they try to push there, so I would have to select, okay, we're gonna go spend a week there. That's the broad stroke of it. But, but for sergeant, now, now I'm scr- scratching that itch. Now, uh, I'm in charge of the guys I love, and plus, I'm actually in the fight, I'm in charge of this line. And when I say in charge, I am, because we do buy with through. So, eh, it was buy with through their version of a JTAC, with my JTAC, we would select which target we're gonna strike.

• 1:19:35Speaker 03

But again, it wasn't Canada war, so for people that don't understand what buy with through is, is I'm, I'm there with you, with my team, and

• 1:19:46Speaker 03

I point you in the right direction, I teach you how to find them and their, you know, DFPs or which house they're in, I, I, I, I, you know, focus you on it. And then I help you write your SALT, your request for a bomb, and then you send it. So it's you that called the Air Force to, to come and support, it's not me. We would double check that, okay, the coordinates are right and stuff, but that's what by with through. It's them that owned the, the bomb, but I supported them in making sure it's accurate and there's no collateral damage and all that. We do these assessments for them. So, so that, that's what I did in two thousand fifteen and it was really fruitful.

• 1:20:30Speaker 03

Um, I don't recall anymore, but we did keep a kill count, obviously, because we're soldiers. And it, it was really fruitful. Uh, so, so much so, and, and we, we had access to our organic weapons if need be. And, and, and that the rule of engagement was that if we'd use organic, it was in defense of our partner force, you understand? We, we, we couldn't use organic.

• 1:20:59Jack Murphy?

  Offensively.

• 1:21:00Speaker 03

Yeah, we had to use air strikes if, if we wanted to strike them, but by with through, anyway. Um, this, this, uh, rotation in December, that might quite a bit of news, we discussed that in the pre-interview. Is that I can speak a bit about it because, uh, it made the news internationally as, I don't know if you recall or if it came across your desk, but in December twenty fifteen, um, there was a large, large attack from Daesh trying to push the line.

• 1:21:34Jack Murphy?

Is, is that the same breakthrough where the SEAL named Keating was killed? Charles Keating, I believe?

• 1:21:40Speaker 03

I, I, it, it, he, he died during my rotation, he was further north, so it wasn't the same breakthrough.

• 1:21:45Jack Murphy?

  Okay, okay.

• 1:21:47Speaker 03

And, and, and I don't, it was a, it was a smaller breakthrough after mine, I believe, and look, I went better in this, I'm, I'm not sure if it was.

• 1:21:56Jack Murphy?

  It's okay.

• 1:21:56Speaker 03

After, yeah. The the big breakthrough was definitely just in the Canadian line. Uh, the the the the center of their push was a a town called Teleswad. And it was, again, unlucky, lucky. It was right in the center of of our, you know, team of eleven, twelve plus our Pesh. So it was in our sector. And um, it was it was alone, almost forty eight hours because um.

• 1:22:29Speaker 03

  Uh.

• 1:22:32Speaker 03

Basically, it it unfolded kinda in steps, so we weren't on the front when the push started, right? So at first, it was definitely there's be- because our team house was like three K from the frontline. So you can hear, whoa, you know, something's really going on. It was kicking off like World War Two, probably. VBIDs, suicide bombers, lot of, lot of, uh, they did a proper pre-fire. So there was about an hour of rockets and artillery, like one five five, they had one five five. Bullshit. So there was one five five rockets, improvised the VBIDs.

• 1:23:15Speaker 03

Just pushing, trying to pass Teleswad, there's another town, try to come through, anyway. Big firefight, um, mass casualty, so, you know, be- because we, you know, when you do special warfare and.

• 1:23:32Speaker 03

Like special forces, you you build rapport through throughout these months, throughout these roads. So what we did is we had a small medical facility at our team house. Remember, we're we're just. Uh, I don't wanna say just gunfighters, but we didn't have a P A attached to us, we just used our skills. And to win their their their trust and their loyalty. Because their main hospital is about an hour drive from their frontline, we'd say, look, any bobos. Stop at our team house. If we're not at the front with you, just stop at our team house. If we can help to, you know, stabilize you for the drive back to to our bill. Till it roll one, let's say.

• 1:24:14Speaker 03

A- and it happened often, you know, an afternoon, you're not deployed at the front. A- and then a guy shows up, he rolled his ankle, or he's. He he got a stray bullet, whatever, so so you do a bit of that. But this this afternoon, it was a big push, so it was like nonstop. Uh, it truckloads, Hilux load of of all the. The best medical training I ever got was there, it was like all the injuries, you know. Uh, gunshot wound, uh, mangled leg, cut off arm, you know, uh. Open skull, you know, the stuff that you even, well, so much that we had to, you know, after a few.

• 1:24:56Speaker 03

Hours, we had to have a P A, physical assistant, you know, uh. Special Forces Doctor, basically reinforced us. And then he took care of really the prior ones, try to stabilize them as much as possible. And then we we put them back in their truck and they would make the rest. I I I don't know the numbers, I don't know how mu- how many we saved, but we did stabilize a lot of of casualties during that flood push. Um, uh, we ran out of all supplies, that that was that many, uh, we were down at like. We'd grab from our bed, our bed sheets from our beds, making packing god.

• 1:25:37Speaker 03

Yeah, and as it is, uh, you look, it it's a long story, I don't want to spend too much time on it, but lots of lesson learned there, um. Down to to the amount of.

• 1:25:49Speaker 03

Tough to explain. So the influx of casualties is coming, let's say, from the north, it was actually north. They're coming down the highway, they're coming to us, our our team house is not ready to to have. You know, thirty casualties at a time, so we have one bed. So now it's outside on the gravel, you know, prioritizing and putting them on the ground. But also, we weren't ready to get so much crowd, it was almost down to crowd control. Cause now the Kurds are extremely uh courageous, right, that the the people, the civilians, like, they are courageous bunch. Uh, respect them a lot. So when they hear on the radio, Daesh is pushing and tell us what.

• 1:26:35Speaker 03

There's traffic of civilians with AKs at forty sevens.

• 1:26:39Jack Murphy?

  Oh shit.

• 1:26:40Speaker 03

Traffic, nighttime traffic, coming to see what's going on to help. So now, I, I, I shit you not, at some point, there must have been three hundred people just crowding our, our little space, just, just there. It's, it's crazy.

• 1:26:58Jack Murphy?

Did, did you have to kind of take control of the tactical situation and start positioning them and organizing them?

• 1:27:04Speaker 03

Yeah, and, and, and, you know, I, I, my guys, man, the guys I worked with, the, my heroes, because I'm in charge of this, uh, until the officer showed up later, I'm in charge of this. So my two IC is heavily involved now. Priorizing casualties, you know, got guys, you know, the guys are all doing, uh, medical stuff. Then I'm got my two IC, the push is that, we don't know what's going on. They might be really coming, and then we're only four Ks away. So my two IC is taking lead, tactical lead, because really my job is to advise assist. So I'm constantly running in between my T-mouse.

• 1:27:49Speaker 03

One thing I didn't explain is our T-mouse was with the, the, the HQ of the Beschmerga for, for this, you know, so that the Kurds. I'm constantly running to the HQ to try to advise them on what, because they're, they're feeding me through interpreter like, they took this mountain, we're over ran there, bring the planes. I want the bombs on, I'm like, no, you got guys there. Yeah, I can't, I can't drop bombs on your guys. Yeah, kill them. It will save more people, like, I tell you, like, you know, it's a long story, but. So I'm constantly running, come checking on my guys, you okay, bud? Yeah, yeah, okay. Boom, back with the HQ. So that's why I needed help, you know, I called back, I'm like, look, overwhelmed worker.

• 1:28:32Speaker 03

Took a few hours, got a ceasefire major with me. He took that from me now. Now he's with the Kurds, advising, assisting them with what they need to try to come, control this mass of ISIS soldiers. They're, they're past the, they're now fighting with the positions, so they went through the, how do you call it? DMZ?

• 1:28:54Jack Murphy?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:55Speaker 03

So they're now end to end combat, really, with the positions. Yeah, yeah, it was crazy, man. And again, the buffer now is 4K. Between if they if they lose their position, if ISIS is strong enough to really push, then they're coming towards us. So we don't know that yet. ISR is giving us intel. Info is coming in nonstop.

• 1:29:16Jack Murphy?

I take it you used organic weapons defensively that night?

• 1:29:20Speaker 03

Yes, also, yeah. They didn't get their T-Mouse. We're we're we're gonna bring the organic to them soon. They never got, they never got past the Kursk or Soekran villages. They never got past the line.

• 1:29:34Jack Murphy?

  That's awesome.

• 1:29:35Speaker 03

The forward line of home troops. Never passed it. It was constant battle there.

• 1:29:44Speaker 03

Timeline wise, so picture this this mass cache and and us deciding to ask for support. Because because now there was JTF2 in country. Um, I I I forget the exact timeline, but early into the night, let's say around 9:00 PM that day. The officer now is with me and he's like, yeah, we need help. So we brought JTF2. A few JTF2 guys to to reinforce us. They don't like that I'm gonna say that, but I'm gonna say it. Um, because it's not their mandate for Canada to advise us as a company. So they took over uh, control of our T-Mouse, security of our T-Mouse.

• 1:30:28Speaker 03

And then we went forward to regain the line. Right? So you can see why.

• 1:30:34Jack Murphy?

Yeah, yeah, JTF2 coming in to support CSO that, yeah, I can see that not going over well.

• 1:30:40Speaker 03

Yeah, and and A, it's mandate.

• 1:30:43Jack Murphy?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:43Speaker 03

And and and but at least it tells you, 2015, we were owning our skills enough that there is a clean line now. We're you're not going after HBT and it's not a hostage rescue. It's it's advise us as a company and it's DA. It's us, so. They came in, took control of our T-Mouse to to allow us to go forward. Um, I think the officer took a a a great decision because the organic weapon, the the engagement, because I knew the ground, you know, a lot. I said, look, we need more snipers, so we took two JTF2 snipers with us. And a warrant officer to help with leadership. So we could, three assaulters with us.

• 1:31:29Speaker 03

Uh, forward. So basically. They, they kind of gave up the mound. I'm giving you a broad stroke here, but. They pulled back from the mound. Uh, really, they were trying to take this village, tell us what. So that's the only thing we had to retake. Um. The Pesh don't, are not equipped with night vision, so it needed to be a daytime. So what we did. Is it was, uh, you know, our contingent of Kansov, I don't remember it exactly. Fifteen, let's say. Um, fifteen guys plus. I think two thousand fifteen hundred Pesh. Uh, we. I decided because of the land, I'm like, I told the officer, I'm like, look.

• 1:32:11Speaker 03

We're gonna spend the night at this tank position. There's a tank position, just. Not even a cave from the village, but we're gonna bring everybody there. We're gonna hold the ground. And then first light, good, good old. Old school first light, we're gonna advance. On, um, on the town. I've planned, I've, I've planned with this officer. It was all his plan. He delivered the plan, but. I helped him build this plan because I know the ground. So we decided that Kansov would be. In a school. Um, it was probably the only two-story building. In this town. It was a really small town. It's all sing. Single-story, two-story, a few houses, but. This one was positioned perfect to do a.

• 1:32:55Speaker 03

Perfect, almost L-shaped. Kind of support base and, and the Pesh would take the village back. So all Kansov. Guys, we, we took control of this school that had two stories. We're on the second story and then. Um, I supported them, uh, taking back the village with, with. Organic weapons, support weapons, mortar. Um, and in the JTAC, doing his job, his job with the Stakiad. And, um.

• 1:33:25Speaker 03

Obviously, a real gunfight, so you know, took down a lot of ISIS guys that we could with with our baseline. And the Pesh did a great job, um, clear, you know, the towers, clear, clear the village. And basically pushed them back through the, the few, um, the few breach they made. And they, they retreated basically.

• 1:33:47Jack Murphy?

  Uh huh.

• 1:33:47Speaker 03

Uh, overwhelming fire, they retreated back to their side and then that was it. And, um, came back to their village. So that, so that, that was the December two thousand fifteen kind of operation. Uh, one of my, you know, I, I really enjoyed that one. That was really, the, the entire thing, right?

• 1:34:06Jack Murphy?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:34:08Speaker 03

Then with medical, then the, uh, one, one thing I wanna say too on this one is, um, the reason that we kinda had a lull, you know, we did the mass cash, then, then we wanna get after it. They're coming for our team. I was like, let's go. The old dub here was our commander, uh, the general of Kansovcom. The only reason we didn't get the green light to take our Pesh and go take the line back for, for at least, it took like four or five hours of just waiting for them to come, you know? So we're on the rooftop of everything, waiting, waiting for it to come because we couldn't get the green light.

• 1:34:49Speaker 03

As simple as our commander was on a flight to the States. So he's out of, it's how stupid it is sometimes, right?

• 1:34:58Jack Murphy?

I've, I've heard stories like that, yeah, like the commander's asleep, so you can't get the airstrike approved. Yeah.

• 1:35:04Speaker 03

Kinda, and, and that was worse because we got Kansov guys about to be overrun and they wanna go and take the line back. But we have to wait for his command and, um, uh, one thing I wanna say is back then it was General Rugo. From what I know, I wasn't there, but from what I know, when his, when his phones started pinging when he landed and he's talked to his staff officer, what I heard is that, hey, the seesaw boys, uh, boys are in trouble. Uh, Daesh broke the line like. Do they go or they retreat? And I don't know the words he used, but he said, they're not retreating. Tell the boys like leash, leash off, go.

• 1:35:48Speaker 03

You know, so I gotta say this commander had balls and and he did it be because you understand Canada, right? We're really.

• 1:35:56Jack Murphy?

  You're very nice. Very nice.

• 1:35:58Speaker 03

Yeah. That's my personal opinion. But, you know, uh, this commander, basically, I gotta say, put his balls on the table. Say, no, they're not.

• 1:36:07Jack Murphy?

Yeah, yeah. Take the gloves off on these assholes.

• 1:36:11Speaker 03

Uh, it was the right decision to picture this. In.

• 1:38:10Speaker 03

Have a partner force, we leave them.

• 1:38:13Jack Murphy?

  Right. Your credibility is gone.

• 1:38:16Speaker 03

Think of the repercussion for future rotation and relationship, right? So you did the right decision.

• 1:38:24Jack Murphy?

And then the second deployment to Iraq, you kind of got to see the fall of Mosul, right?

• 1:38:29Speaker 03

Yeah, I did, yeah. Summer 2017. So again, I got lucky. I was back in a... Because that 2015 one, I kind of moved literally to be a commander of a detachment. That's how kind of our... When you go up in rank, I was a specialist for most of these years, right? A sniper. Because in CSO, we don't have snipers in each detachment. We have actually a sniper squad, and I don't want to discuss more than that, but our snipers are all together. So I moved literally to do Punch In as a commander of gunfighters. And then, right after that Roto, I went back to my roots, to my specialty,

• 1:39:12Speaker 03

as a sniper, and then I was a detachment commander. So when this Roto came, now the war was moving north. Is it north? Yeah, north towards Mosul. So now our partner force became Iraqis again, because you understand Mosul is Iraqi-centric. So they had to take Mosul back with the Iraqi, not the Kurds. Um, and this rodeo about the same time, six, six, it was five, six months long. Uh, our job was to support the Iraqis into taking Mosul back and, and that, that was going on for many months, but it happened that my rotation was, was the la- we didn't know it was gonna be the last one, but it, it was the last one that they took

• 1:39:53Speaker 03

West Mosul with that hospital complex that everybody saw on the news and stuff. So that was the last stand, they were surrounded, that was the last stand of that. And it was, it was different because it wasn't trench warfare anymore. Uh, it was urban. So, and I was a centric in a supporting, you know, in a sniper position. So basically bare bone, old school, uh, sniper position for a few days, mo- move your position every two, three days, you know. Uh, urban OPs and, uh, we, we, we, we were at the front quite often, spend, you know, a week in an OP, a few days back to the team house.

• 1:40:35Speaker 03

Back with the Iraqis at the front and, and went like this for months. Uh, many engagement, I don't wanna say the number. Uh, but you know, it's in, it's in the hundreds, uh, every two, two, three days, you know.

• 1:40:49Jack Murphy?

Were you guys still with a partner force? Were you guys still with a partner force and kind of had a sector of the city?

• 1:40:56Speaker 03

No, this one was different a bit. Uh, we were in a, we could only go, that's how it worked. We could only go and pick a building in a sector that our partner Iraqi unit was in.

• 1:41:11Jack Murphy?

  Okay, yeah.

• 1:41:13Speaker 03

But, but there was a restriction on us and it's okay because we're snipers, so the range was okay, but we could not be within a kilometer of the actual flood and it changed every day, right? Cause they're taking, it's urban now. So the Iraqis are taking ground or losing ground. And me as the commander, it, it was restriction that they didn't want, uh, cans off. Within uh or closer than a kilometer. So so it was a lot of work on on satellite imagery for me to. Okay, where's the front line today? Okay, I like this building, this building. I'll go see this one. This one doesn't work. And then we spent two. Once you establish. The lines sometimes move closer, you know, but they're not gonna make you like move and keep within a K.

• 1:41:57Speaker 03

So uh but but to to get approved to go out, I need to show. Today's front line and this is where I wanna go. And then they're like, okay, you can because. It's within the guidelines. And that's all we did. But we weren't never. This tour, I was your question?

• 1:42:13Jack Murphy?

  Yeah.

• 1:42:13Speaker 03

I was never. Sometimes maybe they were on the front, you know, I was never shoulder to shoulder with them. I'm supporting them now. Like bare bone sniping of of supporting own troops. Protecting them as they move, blah, blah, blah. Uh that's what we were doing.

• 1:42:30Jack Murphy?

So so more of like the observation, the recce, the uh airstrikes, things like that?

• 1:42:36Speaker 03

Yeah, and and then if they're in a gunfight, I'm trying to position myself to to take down ISIS that's shooting at them, you know? Like mutual mutual support, or not mutual support, like close support.

• 1:42:46Jack Murphy?

  Yeah, mutually supporting fires.

• 1:42:49Speaker 03

Yeah, they're not protecting me. I'm protecting them, kind of.

• 1:42:51Jack Murphy?

Right, right. Um, any particular uh stories from that deployment that stand out in your mind?

• 1:42:59Speaker 03

  Um.

• 1:43:02Speaker 03

No, it it's a lot of combat. Uh me meaning a lot of engagement, we we didn't. We were far enough that Dash never reached us. They they reach our building once in a while with sporadic fire or rockets or blah, blah, but. No nothing like that. I felt, ooh, we need to move. Uh I I'm saying we we laid waste. Uh I can say it and I'm happy about it. We we laid waste to this. This is the worst terrorist organization that I. That I am proud that I took down and my my guys and I took down a lot of them. Because they deserve it.

• 1:43:37Jack Murphy?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:37Speaker 03

Uh, you know, I don't have to go into the horrific stuff that they were doing. Um, that that was my most busy tour and it ended my career well. It was. I wish I I did more, but but for the months I was there. There's no crazy story like the one I just discussed in two thousand and fifteen. It's just it was a lot of work. Um, and good work and. It it was the. You know, like I said, I was sniper for most of my career. But that's the tour that was the most engagement. And and one thing that I can say I'm proud of is I was a commander. So I spent more time spotting, you understand that terminology?

• 1:44:19Speaker 03

I spent more time in the spotting, scope, finding target and getting my guys on. But I was proud of that because my my career was coming to an end. I knew it. And and, you know, I can two guys got their first kills under my spotting. To to an experienced sniper, it's the best feeling, right? And I I can tell you that he's still serving. I won't say his name, but he knows who he is. This first guy got his first kill at night. Uh, his his pants around his ankles because I'm on shift and I'm I took a lot. I love being in the optics, so I took long shifts. And then at night, it's like two AM and and across, there was a small river anyway. I'm seeing across the river um flashes.

• 1:45:04Speaker 03

So they they're starting to just shoot towards our bank with machine guns, RPKs probably. And and two or three of them. And I'm on the turmoil, I'm like, I won't say his name. Like, because, you know, it's time for them to sleep, so I'm just observing. And I'm like, get in here, get in, get in. So he shows up and he was so horny that, you know, he didn't even. He's because we sleep with our boots on and our pants is so hot, pants are down to the ankle. You're sleeping like that, just tear it out. He didn't even bother putting his pants up. And his gun is set up on the tripod, ready to go, you know, like just bolt up, bolt open.

• 1:45:43Speaker 03

And this guy just come in helmet, NVGs and just like in his in his underwear, no shirt. Sits on his chair like, where, where, boss? And I put him on and boom, first first round across the border on the chest of that gunner. It's beautiful. And then the guy fires big hugs because it's his first one and he went back to bed.

• 1:46:09Speaker 03

  Great.

• 1:46:10Jack Murphy?

Um, and around this timeframe on this deployment, you also started noticing you were having like some cognitive issues, right?

• 1:46:19Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. So that's what I would love to get into after. Um, I am not diagnosed, but, but I have it. Um, and the reason I'm not diagnosed with TBI is because maybe it's, it's definitely an error. Um, but maybe I come from the old school mentality, you know, I joined in 2000. It was still the end of the 90s, like be hard. And, and then we can discuss the injuries I had through my career, but many, many concussions. Um, some are recorded in my records, but some are just like shake it off.

• 1:46:56Jack Murphy?

  Yeah.

• 1:46:56Speaker 03

You know, headache the next day and, you know, hard landing, parachuting, uh, concussions from falling from whatever, you know, so bang my head many times during all these years.

• 1:47:11Speaker 03

And, and I, I guess now I know, you know, I'm educated. You'll see I educated myself quite a bit on it. And, uh, when your brain rattles in your skull and people notice, but if you don't know, when your brain rattles and it's in liquid, right? Look, I'm not a doctor or scientist, but I understand my brain is in some jelly inside my skull. And, and when it, it's rattled too many times, it leaves bruises on, on your brain. And, and not only people will think, um, hard landing at night, parachute, boom, you knock yourself out. You got a concussion. Everybody understand that.

• 1:47:52Speaker 03

But just the nature of a soft operator being close by door breach, wall breach, shooting, you know, 84, that creates a vacuum. It's, it, it is a mini concussion every time, right? Am I saying it right? The vacuum, the?

• 1:48:14Jack Murphy?

  Uh, blast wave.

• 1:48:16Speaker 03

Yeah, but the blood, yeah, correct. So blast wave. And, and what they started, because I, I love that now it's, it's online and now they're researching it. But when I left, so I left in 2019, we'll skip that, but I decided to, to move to the UK in 2019. Just a few months before I left. Canes off really started looking into traumatic brain injury, TBI, military-related traumatic brain injury. And um just before I left, it was starting to be really a thing. And then there started being okay, who's more prone? I remember that.

• 1:48:56Speaker 03

And it came down to breachers and snipers. Breachers, obviously explosive, all dated, you know, non-stop. And snipers was more of a, oh, maybe snipers, we should do tests on them. Because they shoot these high, high-velocity, high-caliber rounds right by their head, it's probably doing something.

• 1:49:17Speaker 03

So, so they brought us their range, just a flat range on base, and, and some, some doctors and scientists came from Toronto, I think. And they started putting these microphones, but everywhere. And we're outside and we're doing it. They're like, bring the, the heaviest caliber you have, so okay, fifty cal. And then, oh, we'll take, we'll take the can off, you know, because it's more blast. And they, I don't remember the numbers, but they took some, we took some shots and they're like, oh, oh, and, and then I tell you, Jack, they, they unplug stuff, replug.

• 1:49:55Jack Murphy?

Yeah, because you maxed it out. Yeah, you maxed out the meter.

• 1:49:58Speaker 03

Yeah, the, the system's not working. You see where I'm going. And then we do it again, and they're like, this is crazy. This is like five hundred percent more than what we see in the NFL.

• 1:50:14Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:50:14Jack Murphy?

Another day at their office, yeah.

• 1:50:16Speaker 03

But we didn't even do it inside, Jack. That's outside, open air.

• 1:50:21Jack Murphy?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:50:23Speaker 03

Like I told you, we just shot a hundred, hundred something from inside buildings for months. You know, I don't know the number. But inside a building, everything is more condensed. So, back to your question. Uh, I don't remember when I started realizing, you know, that uh my, my temper's changing. I have a shorter fuse, uh, I, I, I, maybe two thousand fifteen, sixteen. Um, I started realizing that, that there was some stuff that it's not me, you know, uh, drinking morbidly, wanting to party.

• 1:51:03Speaker 03

Short fuse, memory loss, uh, can't, you know, can't remember a grocery list, blah, blah. Anyway, but, but, but I don't say anything because first I don't wanna get sidelined and you know how it is. So, and I, I know there's people are listening to this and they're like, oh, that's me. You don't wanna get sidelined when you're a self operator. You wanna do as many missions as you can and blah, blah, blah, right? So, it's when I, it's when I retired and, and that's the portion I, I think it's important for people to listen. Uh, because you're probably like me, you're, you're serving. You have these things you don't wanna talk about. When I left and, and I went in entrepreneurship on my own. Then, then what's important to understand is nobody's paying me.

• 1:51:49Speaker 03

I need to make my own money because I'm my own boss. So now, now it's important that I got my wits and, and that's when it really started hitting me. That I, I could feel some things weird and looking around and what, what do I do? And I, I don't have the money to go private in the UK, blah, blah, blah. But then, okay, I need to spend money. So, uh, for me, I, I know I don't have PTSD, but I knew I had TBI. Long story short, um, I, I went to Mexico and I tried Dezawa, uh, mu cell. And basically, uh, and again, I'm not a scientist, but, um, I did, it, it's IV.

• 1:52:34Speaker 03

And I did one IV bag. You call it the golden bag. You pay for it. And, uh.

• 1:52:39Jack Murphy?

Could you tell us a little bit more about like what that, what this is, what this treatment is and like what it's normally used for?

• 1:52:47Speaker 03

Uh, a- again, I, so it's stem cells therapy, right? But, but I think it named it um, uh, over the, the doctor in Japan, it's a lady. And her, her last name, I believe, is Dzawo. So she, she, I don't know when, she realized that mu cells, I believe there's many mu cells, it's a thing. But she realized that there is one that, that was better than others. So, so that's all I know. But, but if, if, if you'd get this specific mu cell, yes, you know, stem cell therapy. It, we'll discuss in what it fixed for me for all my little bobos. That's instant almost. Whatever they put in that bag, they put four different things. So you're buying uh, anti-inflammatory, that, that is strong anti-inflammatory.

• 1:53:32Speaker 03

But the, this actual mu cell, um, i- it fixes, you know, it's supposed to be able to rebuild cartilage a little bit. Anyway, but, but for, for my brain, it's supposed to last eighteen months. Like the entire thing, the process lasts eighteen months. I, I tell you, Jack, three months into it, I woke, I swear. I woke up a morning and I didn't even know I had an A's. And I don't know if, you know, you've been retired a while, but maybe people will relate to that. I didn't notice because it creeped in, but I had an A's, like I couldn't concentrate, but it becomes normal. Yeah.

• 1:54:17Speaker 03

Right? I was aging. All my body, all my brain was relating to it is you're aging. I'm forty-two now, like, oh, you're aging. I woke up one morning, so that night, this thing just got rid of this A's of TBI that I had. I was clearer that day, I remember exactly when it was, and I'm like, ooh. I'm gonna spend three hours at the gym today. Like I add just more energy. And I can, you know, I'm a business owner now and I need to pitch client and corporation. I, I, I used to have, cause I took this bag in March, so a few months back. I'm not even done the eighteen months. But so before that, Butch would have to like, practice and take notes.

• 1:55:03Speaker 03

And, and really go with notes or PowerPoint and, and add my cue lines. Now, no. I, I rehearse, obviously, but then it's boom, boom, boom. My wife, you know, a beautiful wife can send me to the grocery store with a list of ten things and I don't forget one. Before that, I would have to like, oh, send me a text. And then I would even sometimes in the middle, like, oh, I have to look at the text a few times. So something happens in your brain that fixes it. I don't get angry. I got a four-year-old boy, you know? A four-year-old boy is like a raptor. It climbs walls. It doesn't listen to you, you know? Anyway, mine's like that.

• 1:55:44Speaker 03

And, and my wife really noticed that, cause she's like, you have so much more patience with your son. Like it's, she knows I did that, right? And she's like, wow. You know, so again, I, look, I'm not, I'm, I'm, I sound like a salesman now. But, but I, I want, so, so basically, my message to, to your listeners, especially if they have a uh, police, you know, background.

Firefighters, they've knocked their head a lot. There's stuff out there, and I'm not saying to go to Mexico, but there's stuff out there that will fix you. And another thing, I got a friend of mine, he was a JTAC with us, Gordon Early is his name. It's mostly Canadian, but if there's listeners in Canada. This guy was just last week at Parliament. He's trying to push psychedelic. You know, you're used to that in the States.

• 1:58:31Jack Murphy?

  Yep, yep, yep.

• 1:58:32Speaker 03

There's two things. There's TBI, I don't want to speak all night about it, but there's TBI and there's PTSD. Our government, yours and mine, need to realize that you don't have to put pills into soldiers. I'll use soldiers because I have one, but law enforcement, firemen, EMTs, you don't have to fill them with pills.

• 1:58:57Speaker 03

There's, there's, they should investigate, you know, the desire of immune cell if they wish to, or psychedelics psychedelics for PTSD because that's does wonders. Gordon is big advocate and he's gonna move the government into looking into this because he's out there with the media and stuff.

• 1:59:13Jack Murphy?

That's awesome. There's a, I actually, I just interviewed today, earlier today, the director and one of the persons in the, in the documentary he made, Marcus Capone, who's a former Navy SEAL. And this whole, this documentary is going to be out on Netflix next week and like a matter of days. And it's all about these SEALs going down to, I believe they did go down to Mexico and doing EBOGAIN and DMT. And, you know, the whole psychedelic treatment. And I mean, they're very open and very vulnerable in this documentary. And I, I really encourage people to go and see it because it gets a lot of this.

• 1:59:55Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. And plus, you know, through your channel, you got so much reach. So I respect that if, if you're, because I really believe in it now, like it's real now. I, I'm like, oh, I'll try it. I, I think there's something for PTSD and maybe TBI, but psychedelics for PTSD. And TBI, they need to look at this desire. Because it works. I look, it's, it saved my life. Like my, look, I don't want to go into details, but marriage is hard.

• 2:00:24Jack Murphy?

  Sure.

• 2:00:24Speaker 03

Especially if you're all fucked up in the head. You do stupid things. You know, and now, now for months, me and my life, my wife, my, my beautiful wife's pregnant now. And, and we're just happy. And it's because of this, I know it. Because it was, you know, it took months, but at some point I'm like, wow. I guess it's real, you know, so.

• 2:00:47Jack Murphy?

So tell us about the 242 group.

• 2:00:50Speaker 03

Look, this is the new adventure of my life. Long story short, because we've been on for a long time. I retired in 2019 and I sold everything. And I left to the UK with three suitcases, I think. It was to work for, in risk mitigation, head of risk mitigation for an entrepreneur, businessman. And I did that, I cut my teeth into private security, basically. And, and that lasted better part of three years. And, and then I opened my own thing, 242 Group.

• 2:01:33Speaker 03

Just because I miss working as a team, you know, working for just one client, it was great. But, but I wanted to have a try at being an entrepreneur. So, it, it grew pretty fast. We, we just did our third year anniversary. But I can tell you that I, I love it because basically me and my three co-founders, which I'm proud to say, you know, like I'm Kansoff. And two of my co-founders are UKSF. And another one is from the Met Police, CTSF. It was like their, their federal counter-terror police. So like the highest SWAT team. SWAT guys.

• 2:02:16Speaker 03

So that's the four of us that decided to start this. And it, and it grew in four departments. So, so basically we have, you know, a department that does risk mitigation. So the EP work, surveillance, investigative, the, the cookie cutter EP, blah, blah, blah. We, we have that. That, that was our first department, but it, it quickly grew into three more departments. Because we saw that us and our network, because we're global. You know, guys, guys from SOCOM, J Stock, subcontract, Green Berets, blah, blah, blah, name it. We do stuff in the US through them, we're in Africa often.

• 2:02:55Speaker 03

So we decided to open um the UK gun laws, we can't have a school here like a, you know, constellate, so we can't. So we have training teams. So our SAS, retired SAS guy, he leads the training department. So we, we do a special warfare. We send training teams to, to places. We were in the Ukraine quite a bit, Poland, Africa, blah, blah, blah. So he leads that department. And then special projects, I don't want to discuss it too much because it's our coolest department, but it does um stuff for agencies and government uh departments, you know, problem solving tanks, stuff that they they need our expertise to do that they don't want to have their name attached maybe, you know, so we work mostly for

• 2:03:39Speaker 03

uh corporation too, but, but it's basically as, look, everybody has a special project department, but us, ours, that's what it does, it's fix problems unconventional ways and all that. Right, right. And the thing that's interesting, if you go on the website, you'll see we got the MSU mobile security. I'm proud to say we're the first in the world that has a uh a purpose-built, private motorbike escort service, okay? Not unlike what you see the cops have, you know, when they do convoys and they have, but, but it's different for us, that's why we're the first one is, there's a specific problem in London, UK.

• 2:04:20Speaker 03

And it's organized crime, but it's mopeds, you know, little mopeds. It's called moped crime here. And how this department came to life is these, these wealthy guys here, they, they can't drive their supercars, let's say in London, throw it off, drive around. Because mopeds will come alongside, they tape, rebar, let's say, to their fore, uh their forearm. So the, the rear guy will wait till the car is stopped at a red light and traffic, smash the window and what they want is this jewelry, you know, the driver will have a a tech Philippe or they, they steal watches, ladies necklace, their purses.

• 2:04:59Speaker 03

They don't steal the cars, not hijack. They want to come in and they stab them or they threaten them with a knife to get their jewelry. So in twenty twenty two, we're like, how do we fix this? And the conventional way, same as in the U. A. Or everywhere in the world, your client as he wants to drive his Lamborghini. You don't put a E. P. Guy on the seat next to him. You have a chase car. But in in populated cities, dense cities, it doesn't work. The the the response time and you get the Range Rover following the Lambo. If he burns a a yellow light, then you're stuck at the it doesn't work, but more uh bikes.

• 2:05:41Speaker 03

You're always with your client and the more best they don't get close and he can react immediately. Anyway, so so we ever and we're. I found out we're the first in the world because I had to pay for the policy for this. Extremely expensive. I had to I had to go to lawyers in London. Thank you, lawyers. They had to draft a policy and they're like, we can't find comparables. Doesn't exist. So so I paid for the lawyer fees and stuff to do the policy.

• 2:06:07Jack Murphy?

  Insurance, everything.

• 2:06:09Speaker 03

  I'm proud of it though.

• 2:06:10Jack Murphy?

I think we have a question from a viewer.

• 2:06:14Speaker 03

  Oh, nice.

• 2:06:19Speaker 03

Did that happen often or am I the first?

• 2:06:22Jack Murphy?

Uh, we know people who subscribe to us on Patreon. They can. We let them ask questions.

• 2:06:29Speaker 04

All right. So from uh Lane Hutchinson, which C. F. B. Has the most unpredictable weather?

• 2:06:39Speaker 03

Oh, that's an easy one. You must be Canadian. Um, uh, C. F. B. Wainwright. It's got a microclimate. It's disgusting there.

• 2:06:51Jack Murphy?

  That's that's way up north, isn't it?

• 2:06:54Speaker 03

Uh, it's uh, no, central. It's in Alberta, if I'm correct.

• 2:06:58Jack Murphy?

  Okay, okay.

• 2:07:00Speaker 03

I I did a few training events there. I did one of my leadership course there. It's famous that C. F. B. Wainwright. Um, I tell you, it's like the beacon beacons here in the UK. Well, it will snow sideways in August. And then immediately after freezing rain, immediately after sun, immediately, like it's crazy.

• 2:07:21Jack Murphy?

  I, I think.

• 2:07:22Speaker 03

  Horrible.

• 2:07:23Jack Murphy?

I, I think we might have a Wainwright in Alaska. Um, I'm probably mixing the two up.

• 2:07:29Speaker 03

I know, I, yes, you probably have, but yes, so I don't know what it, it's got something to do with, you know, the Rockies. A- a- and then whatever, but that base is horrible. The PPCI know it way better than me because they're the West Coast. Me, I, I just, because Kansov turns a bit everywhere. I've visited a few times and I know the rumor and it's true. It's disgusting.

• 2:07:52Jack Murphy?

Uh, you got another one, Dee?

• 2:07:54Speaker 04

Yeah, we got another one from Sean Dudley. Uh, can you tell us the most esoteric skillset you've been or seen taught? That unexpectedly came in handy?

• 2:08:05Speaker 03

Oh, that's a good one. I, I need to dust off the TBI for that one. Um. Esoteric. Please define the word esoteric to the French Canadian.

• 2:08:17Jack Murphy?

I think he means like, kind of like odd, outside the norm. Like if you guys learned like lockpicking or something like that.

• 2:08:25Speaker 03

Um. I, I, I, hopefully, as you can tell during this, what, ninety minutes we've been together or two hours, um. My speaking ability, even though I have an accent and, you know, I don't quite speak English good, um.

• 2:08:44Speaker 03

Talking my way into places and that goes with special warfare involved, building rapport with partners. Look, the, the little example of me and Jay making fake, fake IDs, uh, but, but. Talking my way out of situation or in areas or, or. Talking my way into situation that will benefit myself.

• 2:09:09Speaker 03

Bullshitting, um, bullshitting is the word. That's.

• 2:09:15Jack Murphy?

I think we, we prefer, we prefer to use the term rapport building, uh, but.

• 2:09:21Speaker 03

Yeah, I try to keep it real here for your guys. Um, yeah, that's a skill that, and, and I think most soft, you know, soft unit, they need that skill, right?

• 2:09:32Jack Murphy?

  Absolutely.

• 2:09:34Speaker 03

Yeah. Especially at things, special poses.

• 2:09:37Jack Murphy?

Well, Butch, thank you for sharing your story with us tonight. This has been awesome. Um, and please tell viewers out there where they can find you, where they can find two, four, two group. If they want to employ your services, where should they go?

• 2:09:53Speaker 03

Yeah, look, that's a good point, actually. We're doing good enough that, um, we, we gonna, I, I think you won. Look, the paperwork's getting drafted. We, we will be in Florida, uh, which I'm excited about because, you know, that's a good state. Um, we, we're gonna have a CEO there and, and so two guys will have an office there and you understand that world, we, we subcontract. But, but the thing is, if you go on two, four, two, dash, group.com, you'll see our website. Um, it will get all translated into, okay, now you're gonna pick USA or the UK, but, but what I mean is

• 2:10:32Speaker 03

all your viewers, mo- most guys have retired soft background and, and please go on the website. Click on the deposit and see our story and we are global. We, we operate in the US via legally via subcontractors. We have great, a great, um, list of onboarded guys because we don't take, it's not because you were soft that we take you. You need to have a certain demeanor and a type of experience and skill that we need, but we're all.

Boys, building a bigger network of operatives, you know. So go on the website, review the departments. If there is a department that you're interested in, there's an inquiry inbox. Like I said, Q1 2026 will need to a lot of good operatives in the US because we'll be based there now legally. So we'll be truly global for... So the plan is 242 Group, the CEO, which JTS2 Colonel, who will immigrate down to you guys, but he's happy to, he spends six months a year anywhere in Florida. And I don't want to say his name yet, but a SEAL Team Six guy will be his second, second guy, so operation manager.

• 2:13:40Speaker 03

Um, these two guys will run Western Hemisphere. So, so now instead of time zones and me, we were just in Brazil doing something pretty cool. Now, now, you know, this, this, these two guys will take Western Hemisphere from us. So, South America, USA, Canada will all be handled by them. And then Europe, Africa, and we'll support each other, but you understand, trying to divide.

• 2:14:05Jack Murphy?

  Right.

• 2:14:06Speaker 03

You know, you guys, you guys main task and support us, but main task will be Western Hemisphere, Eastern Hemisphere with us. And then if it goes well still, then we're gonna move further. You can say West or East, but we won't have a presence in Southeast Asia, you know.

• 2:14:23Jack Murphy?

  Oh, amazing.

• 2:14:24Speaker 03

Well, I can tell you that my plan would probably be to have CEO, let's say SASR or Two Commando, you know, Australia-based, and then it would take Southeast Asia from us.

• 2:14:35Jack Murphy?

  It's awesome.

• 2:14:35Speaker 03

But I'm truly, I'm truly building a group. Uh, it's becoming a real group now. And, um, if you're interested in us, the most important thing to us is our guys. We will never compromise, uh, our guys for money, because this world of, of contracting, there's a lot of paying the guys low wages, trying to make more profit. Oh, the client said that, so we make it happen. We turn down clients. I'm building a culture of what I miss, because I miss my regimen so much. Miss these guys every day until I die. So what I'm doing in the private sector and my three co-founders are doing

• 2:15:15Speaker 03

is building our own little culture of guys first, you know, men, men before, uh, uh, gear, you know, that, that's what we're building.

• 2:15:26Jack Murphy?

  That's awesome.

• 2:15:27Speaker 03

That's us. Thank, thank you for letting me, uh, say that, you know.

• 2:15:30Jack Murphy?

  Yeah, hundred, hundred percent, man.

• 2:15:32Speaker 03

Sounds like they're expanding rapidly. And, um, for everyone else, we'll see you guys next time. Thank you for tuning in tonight.

• 2:15:52Speaker 03

Thank you, Jack. Thank you, everybody.

• 2:15:55Jack Murphy?

She's been thinking about this sleepover all week, but I think about her food allergies all the time. Fortunately, her doctor prescribed Zolair, omalizumab. It's proven to significantly reduce allergic reactions if a food allergy accident happens.

• 2:31:23Speaker 12

Zolair 150mg is a prescription medication used to treat food allergy in people one year of age and older to reduce allergic reactions due to accidental exposure to one or more foods. While taking Zolair, you should continue to avoid all foods to which you are allergic. Don't use if you are allergic to Zolair. Zolair may cause a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Tell your doctor if you ever had anaphylaxis. Get help right away if you have trouble breathing or if you have swelling of your throat or tongue. Zolair should not be used for the emergency treatment of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Zolair is for maintenance use to reduce allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, while avoiding food allergens. Serious side effects such as cancer, fever, muscle aches and rash, parasitic infection, or heart and circulation problems have been reported. Please see zolair.com for full prescribing information.
