over, you're not in panic mode. You're ready to go with Off the Record. All right, on today's show, we got a lot to talk about. Zach, Zach did himself some wrenching. He had some, he had, he had, he had a weekend of turning wrenches and getting dirty and we learn all about those things that are happening with his E46M3. Plus, we drove the Carrera T Cabriolet. I got the most insane email I've gotten in a very long time and we have some amazing questions from the Patreon to ponder. It's the Smoking Tire Podcast. Let's get to it. Cruise show, let's go.

• 1:58Matt Farah?

  Hello. Hello. Hello.

• 2:01Speaker 01

  Hi.

• 2:02Matt Farah?

Hi, welcome to the Smoking Tire Podcast. Uh, it is my duty to report that we have new merch.

• 2:08Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 2:09Matt Farah?

This one looks like an Aston Martin.

• 2:11Speaker 01

  Indeed.

• 2:11Matt Farah?

We have not infringed, but we've gotten close.

• 2:15Speaker 01

Spread your wings and then encase them in comfort.

• 2:17Matt Farah?

Yeah. So, we've got the Aston Martin logo, this one, this one looks like Porsche. I don't know if this color combo plays well to camera. This may look weird under studio light and iPhone. Silver on blue. It looks better on the shirt and you can get a bunch of, you can get them in a bunch of colors. Go to the Smoking Tire shop right now and get one for yourself and...

• 2:39Speaker 01

This would perfectly match the 911 T-Cab.

• 2:42Matt Farah?

It was, I thought, I had that thought, yeah, it really, you could wear this while driving that and be fucking matchy-matchy. Um, welcome to the program. Uh, I just got back from a little trip. Trying a new look. Trying the bald on top, beard on bottom look.

• 3:00Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 3:01Matt Farah?

  You didn't even notice.

• 3:01Speaker 01

Well, because I've seen you when you don't shave the goatee and it does that.

• 3:05Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 3:05Speaker 01

  But it is tighter.

• 3:06Matt Farah?

Yeah, and then the top, yeah.

• 3:09Speaker 01

Well, I mean, you've obviously shaved your head for like a long time.

• 3:11Matt Farah?

Yeah, but like usually if the beard, but if the beard is this long, I haven't normally shaved the top at all. I'm just bald.

• 3:18Speaker 01

  Right.

• 3:19Matt Farah?

So now I, but now I did the cutoff, cutoff at the glasses. To be the guy who shaves his head but then has a full beard.

• 3:27Speaker 01

Well, also because when you don't shave for two days, your goatee is much longer because you continue to keep, keep that ahead. You want that in front.

• 3:34Matt Farah?

It gets a couple of cycles.

• 3:35Speaker 01

Right, it's got a head start.

• 3:36Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 3:37Speaker 01

  But yeah, it looks good.

• 3:37Matt Farah?

We're trying, we're gonna see if it works. It's a pain in the ass. You have to shave your head like every other day. Whereas I could go like a week or two previously.

• 3:48Speaker 01

When you go a week or two, aren't you wearing a hat a lot of the time anyway?

• 3:50Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah, but you're getting, you get scruffy and it looks weird. This looks weirder if you don't shave your head.

• 3:56Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 3:57Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 3:57Speaker 01

Because you have to, oh, because you're keeping the beard the same length all the time, so the head's catching up?

• 4:01Matt Farah?

No, but it's the head, the head very quickly becomes messy.

• 4:05Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 4:05Matt Farah?

  If you don't shave it.

• 4:06Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 4:07Matt Farah?

But if it's like a uniform, then it's less noticeable. It's a hard edge.

• 4:11Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 4:11Matt Farah?

Trust me, I was just there.

• 4:12Speaker 01

  I believe you.

• 4:13Matt Farah?

Yet, this morning, I was at that point when, oh, oh no. Four days is too many days.

• 4:20Speaker 01

I'm just jealous, you can just be a beard scape your beard and it looks good. Cause I can't do that. I have to like beard scape down then shave. Or it looks like shit.

• 4:29Matt Farah?

  Oh, for this?

• 4:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:30Matt Farah?

  Well, I, I, I buzz and then I shave.

• 4:34Speaker 01

  Right.

• 4:34Matt Farah?

  In the shower.

• 4:35Speaker 01

Your head has the same maintenance as my face. That's what it is.

• 4:38Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 4:38Speaker 01

Yeah. My face looks weird if I don't shave.

• 4:40Matt Farah?

I do, I have a new, some new keels shit. They didn't pay me to say that, but they have a new aftershave cream that I really, really, really like. It's excellent. And I've the last, I'm now getting quarterly facials. Which, have you gotten one ever?

• 4:56Speaker 01

Yeah, once. It's like, it's amazing.

• 4:57Matt Farah?

  It's awesome.

• 4:58Speaker 01

  It's so relaxing, holy crap.

• 4:59Matt Farah?

Yeah, it's, it's really a delight. And apparently I have like a higher tolerance for pain than most of the women who get facials. Regarding my face, cause there, she's like, this is gonna hurt. And then she does a little like, you know, vacuum of my cheeks and it does not hurt at all. And I'm like, when's the part that hurts? She's like, that didn't hurt? I was like, no. Who thinks that hurts? And she's like, a lot of people.

• 5:21Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 5:21Matt Farah?

  Wow, alright, fine.

• 5:22Speaker 01

What are they doing to your cheeks?

• 5:23Matt Farah?

Fine. It's like a, it's, it's all, it literally looks like the machine that we use to fucking shampoo carpets, but a small version and on your face.

• 5:33Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 5:34Matt Farah?

  That, that's the move, yeah.

• 5:35Speaker 01

  I'll ask her, she'll know.

• 5:36Matt Farah?

  It's like a mini bisel.

• 5:38Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 5:38Matt Farah?

And there's one that like, there's one that looks like a mini version of the thing that janitors use to do a, you know what I mean?

• 5:45Speaker 01

  To do a floor, right?

• 5:46Matt Farah?

The spinny thing, a buffer. There's a mini version of that.

• 5:49Speaker 01

I hope it's a full size. Two hands and they're just there on your face like, don't move, sir.

• 5:53Matt Farah?

Yeah. She's hot. It's, it's a whole thing. It is. But you can't, you can't go down that rabbit hole. Pretty soon you're like skincare guy.

• 6:01Speaker 01

We're like, uh, Rob Lowe. Remember when Bert had him on and he's like, what's your face routine? He's like, oh, I got one. Like, yeah, you do. I mean, you look amazing.

• 6:10Matt Farah?

Yeah, pretty soon you've got a regimen you've got to stick to.

• 6:13Speaker 01

It's I tried to do that for a while. It was a lot. I got a lot of maintenance to worry about, which we'll talk about. Don't worry.

• 6:19Matt Farah?

Do you want to start with that? Because I walked in and I was like, what's this? And you're like, it's a Dremel. Don't ask me why I need a Dremel until we're recording. So why do you need a Dremel, Zach?

• 6:31Speaker 01

Well, as I mentioned on the show, when I went to Office Autosport a few weeks ago, they said, we need to talk about your power steering lines. And I said, why? And they said, because all of them are leaking. And there are four. And then they told me how much they'd cost to change. And I said, I'll do that. And they also said, we need to talk about your pulleys because your pulleys talk to us when you turn the car on.

• 6:53Matt Farah?

Like, like, does it sound like a dolphin?

• 6:58Speaker 01

No, that's more of the belt, which also had an issue. There's more of a, there's a clickety sound like bat sonar. You shouldn't hear that. And then one of the other pulleys was making just sort of like a

• 7:08Matt Farah?

We just had the belts and pulleys replaced on the big main fan here.

• 7:13Speaker 01

Oh, that's because of the vibration.

• 7:14Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 7:15Speaker 01

  There was a thing.

• 7:15Matt Farah?

Big job. Yeah, yeah. The pulleys and the belts were worn out. Yeah, five years.

• 7:19Speaker 01

Yeah, my, some of my pulleys are, I changed them the year I bought the car, so they're five years old. The belts are newer than that. But to quote Ken at Office, he's like, you could probably get rid of the Turner Motorsports pulleys because you're not really tracking it. And I was like, I know.

• 7:35Matt Farah?

What is the, what, what would a Turner Motorsports, is it a different ratio? Is it like an underdrive pulley?

• 7:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:41Matt Farah?

  Oh, you have underdrive pulleys?

• 7:42Speaker 01

  I did.

• 7:43Matt Farah?

  Oh.

• 7:43Speaker 01

For the horsepower, Matt. For all the speed.

• 7:46Matt Farah?

Damn, they're like a high school mistake.

• 7:51Speaker 01

I mean, dyno charts say that they do work.

• 7:54Matt Farah?

They work. They work great at full throttle. How does your car feel off idle?

• 7:59Speaker 01

  It doesn't idle great.

• 8:03Speaker 01

I don't know if that's why, but I'm gonna Google that later.

• 8:05Matt Farah?

  Oh, yeah, it is.

• 8:07Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 8:07Matt Farah?

Yeah, it's because it's fucking underdriving your alternator.

• 8:11Speaker 01

To defend Turner, when I looked up idle issues with BMWs, I found posts from 06 where brand-new owners were like, "Does anyone else's car idle weird above 500?" And I was like, "They do that." And the cars were fucking new.

• 8:25Matt Farah?

Maybe they do, and I mean, I'm not saying that if a part, an underdrive pulley works for racing because you're always spinning the motor up to where your alternator is making full output, well above that. But like, dude, I put underdrive pulleys in my Mustang in fucking high school, and when the car would drop to idle, all the lights...

• 8:44Speaker 01

Oh, mine didn't do that. I didn't have a dimming issue or a battery issue.

• 8:49Matt Farah?

Well, I paired it with a fucking choppy cam.

• 8:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 8:52Matt Farah?

So I definitely made it worse. But like, yeah, if you're experiencing things happening around your idle area, underdrive pulleys...

• 8:59Speaker 01

It's like a prescription. Do you have problems with your idle area? Try OEM pulleys. Side effects may include loss of 400 horsepower.

• 9:08Matt Farah?

We have... Yes. Minus one bragging rights in BimmerPost.

• 9:14Speaker 01

Pretty much. And dude, the pulley, like the OEM pulley, let's say it's as big as its coaster, which I don't know, four inches across.

• 9:21Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 9:21Speaker 01

The Turner one is like six. It's big.

• 9:23Matt Farah?

  Oh, yeah.

• 9:24Speaker 01

  It's much lighter, too.

• 9:25Matt Farah?

The car's gonna be like, "Ah."

• 9:29Speaker 01

It's getting a spot treatment, yeah, pretty much.

• 9:31Matt Farah?

That's fucking crazy. Okay, yeah, so wait, but the Dremel?

• 9:35Speaker 01

  Right.

• 9:38Speaker 01

So I changed all the pulleys. I follow... Shout out, I mean, FCP here hooked me up with a lot of the parts, but they also have a walkthrough video of the entire process that is like one of the best-shot DIY videos ever. They're like, here's... Because they don't just show you, "Here's how it should go if your car's OEM." They're like, "By the way, someone might have changed one of these bolts at some point in the life of your car." That happened to me. So it might not be this thing. Like, they show you a lot of the tricks, which is very handy. Pulley goes fine. Brake lines are just... I hate them so much. And I follow this other video from a very thorough guy, and he's taking off this hot... There's a line that goes to the... Power steering cooler that's in front of the radiator. So it's kind of a hard line. It's affixed to a hard pieces of aluminum. There's two of them.

• 10:23Speaker 01

They're vertical. They're right next to each other. And in his video, he's like, "You might need a special tool to take this off." And he tries the special tool and it doesn't work. And he goes, "I'm gonna try the other one I have." Tries the second special tool. He goes, "All right, I'll come back to this." Comes back to it with a Dremel and has to cut it open because the line like has seized itself because it's like 100 years old or it's 140,000 miles old. So even when you take off this stupid, annoying, I know an engineer is screaming because it's intentional, but like the collar that goes over this hard fitting, even when that's released the tension, the thing is like frozen on there. So last night-

• 11:01Matt Farah?

So you have to cut it off?

• 11:02Speaker 01

Yeah, I have to like cut it off. And I got, and I cut mine open last night with wire cutters, which shout out to the wire cutters. I'm impressed they held up through that. And it still didn't come off and it was too late at night to hammer on things in my apartment with like a hammer and a screwdriver.

• 11:17Matt Farah?

Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait. Where, where are you physically working on this?

• 11:21Speaker 01

Well, I've got my garage now, which is awesome.

• 11:23Matt Farah?

But are you doing this in the garage?

• 11:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:25Matt Farah?

  Oh, okay.

• 11:26Speaker 01

That's why I have the garage.

• 11:27Matt Farah?

The way you said that, I had, you said in my apartment. I was like, hang on. Are you bringing-

• 11:33Speaker 01

I brought the radiator into the bathtub.

• 11:35Matt Farah?

This is car you garbage. Have you brought componentry into the house for repair?

• 11:40Speaker 01

Not at this apartment, but yes.

• 11:44Speaker 01

But my, my individual garage is below someone else's apartment.

• 11:47Matt Farah?

Yeah, well, considerate of you, yeah.

• 11:48Speaker 01

So it's 10:00 PM and I'm like, I probably shouldn't hammer on a screwdriver. I got a lot done, but dude, I spent 12 hours working on my car yesterday. And I had to keep telling myself how much money I'm saving by not bringing to somebody. Otherwise, I would be so upset.

• 12:04Matt Farah?

  How much are you saving?

• 12:05Speaker 01

  Like 2,000 bucks probably.

• 12:06Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 12:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:07Matt Farah?

  That's a day rate.

• 12:07Speaker 01

  It's-

• 12:08Matt Farah?

  Is it, well-

• 12:09Speaker 01

It's gotta be a good day rate, yeah.

• 12:10Matt Farah?

Now, is the Dremel here at the studio because it's on the way to your house or from your house?

• 12:17Speaker 01

  To my house.

• 12:18Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 12:18Speaker 01

  I texted Vinnie last night.

• 12:19Matt Farah?

  So there's more?

• 12:20Speaker 01

At, yes. I'm not, I'm not, oh, I'm not done.

• 12:22Matt Farah?

  12 hours ain't done.

• 12:23Speaker 01

No, no, if I'm done in an aggregate of, let's say, 18, I'll be pretty happy.

• 12:30Matt Farah?

  Bro.

• 12:32Matt Farah?

Bro, but you're day, but you're worth more than a hundred bucks an hour.

• 12:37Speaker 01

Depending on what we're doing, yes and no, I know. That's what's tough. And also, I mean, if we do that math, writing kinda goes out the window. Not for, like, article stuff.

• 12:48Matt Farah?

  Yeah, I don't know.

• 12:49Speaker 01

  But it's about the reward.

• 12:51Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 12:51Speaker 01

So, on the pro side, I now have a better understanding of my vehicle and I'm let, and all the shit won't be leaking and whatnot.

• 12:58Matt Farah?

Well, that's really the pro side.

• 13:01Speaker 01

  Eighteen hours.

• 13:02Matt Farah?

  That sucks.

• 13:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:03Matt Farah?

As you're, as you're in, cause your garage opens to a large carport for your apartment complex.

• 13:11Speaker 01

  Right.

• 13:11Matt Farah?

So, are a lot of people coming by and checking in on you?

• 13:14Speaker 01

  I close the door.

• 13:14Matt Farah?

  Oh, you do?

• 13:15Speaker 01

Yeah, for sure. I don't want people to talk to me.

• 13:17Matt Farah?

• 17:52Matt Farah?

Is there ventilation of some kind in there?

• 17:54Speaker 01

  Uh, there's enough. There's enough.

• 17:56Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 17:57Speaker 01

Well, actually, last night, because we had an earthquake yesterday. We had a 4O.

• 18:01Matt Farah?

  Really?

• 18:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:03Matt Farah?

  Really?

• 18:04Speaker 01

And it was located 2 miles from here.

• 18:05Matt Farah?

  Car on jack stands?

• 18:06Speaker 01

  It's on 4 jack stands.

• 18:07Matt Farah?

  Oh, boy.

• 18:08Speaker 01

Well, I wasn't under it, thank God. But like, I felt something and I thought, "Big truck." You know, I was not under the car at the time. I will say that when putting the car on jack stands, I had the thought, like, "I'll double up the jack stands, because only the front's in the air." Because I do live in an earthquake state.

• 18:24Matt Farah?

  Good idea.

• 18:25Speaker 01

Turns out, a pretty long 4.0 earthquake happened. So, but the car didn't, the car didn't move.

• 18:31Matt Farah?

  Didn't fall.

• 18:32Speaker 01

  No, didn't fall.

• 18:33Matt Farah?

It would have to be a pretty big one for a car to fall.

• 18:35Speaker 01

Yeah. Oh, but that leads me, now I have the garage door open like 2 feet. So if I wanted to run out, I could just run out and roll under. Because I had it closed to keep it warm. And also-

• 18:44Matt Farah?

Did you take the creeper that we got?

• 18:45Speaker 01

No, I don't, they rate, they add like 2 inches to how, you know, they lift you off the ground.

• 18:52Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 18:53Speaker 01

And sometimes I need the space. So I don't care.

• 18:54Matt Farah?

Someone gave us like a really nice creeper.

• 18:56Speaker 01

It's very nice. I saw it. But it's big.

• 18:58Matt Farah?

  Yeah, I mean, I don't know-

• 18:59Speaker 01

  It looks like a luge.

• 19:00Matt Farah?

It does. It does look like a luge. I don't know like, what we're gonna ever do with it, but it's, it is nice.

• 19:05Speaker 01

I thought about it. If I had EZ Jacks, which lift the car higher, I would probably use the roller. And I would be much cleaner. Because last night it was pretty gross.

• 19:14Matt Farah?

Maybe one day we'll, we'll build.

• 19:16Speaker 01

I went to kiss Sarah goodnight last night. She's like, "No, no, no." I go, "It's not on my face." She goes, "Yeah, it is."

• 19:25Speaker 01

So that's what I'm doing. So, uh, I'll be done and then I can finally fill my car. That's what's being delayed. Anyway.

• 19:33Matt Farah?

  That's nuts.

• 19:34Speaker 01

Speaking of high maintenance, high performance sports cars.

• 19:37Matt Farah?

Uh, you want to talk about the Lambo? We can talk about, if we have a few things. We can talk about the update on the Countach. We could talk about the Carrera T Cabriolet that we had. We could talk about the craziest lunatic email I possibly have ever gotten. Uh, we could talk about, uh, a new, we could talk about government, talk about laws. You want to talk about laws?

• 19:59Speaker 01

  Which laws?

• 20:00Matt Farah?

Uh, a California senate bill has been proposed, uh, that would abolish the hard cutoff year for smog and would instead have a rolling 35-year smog exemption. Once a car hits 35, exempt.

• 20:16Speaker 01

  Yeah, cool.

• 20:17Matt Farah?

  Which I'm 100%, 100% for.

• 20:19Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 20:19Matt Farah?

  I think that's.

• 20:20Speaker 01

  I'm surprised they did it.

• 20:20Matt Farah?

I think that's common sense. Well, it's not been, it's not been approved yet.

• 20:23Speaker 01

  I'm surprised.

• 20:24Matt Farah?

  It's a proposal. Senate Bill 712. It's a proposal.

• 20:27Speaker 01

  Alright.

• 20:27Matt Farah?

  In the California senate.

• 20:29Speaker 01

  So we'll see.

• 20:29Matt Farah?

Yeah. I mean, but I, I think it's wise. I think you'd have a lot of people who would register their cars in California instead of, eh, Montana or whatever, if there was a path for that, that smog exemption.

• 20:42Speaker 01

Yeah, cause we've talked about this before. The number of cars that do, drive around are so small. I hope this bill has more viability. There's been a politician in, I think Kentucky, putting forth bills as a sort of statement that's like, "Bill to outlaw masturbation because spilling seed is discarding embryos." And he's doing it as an example of how ridiculous some of the restrictive laws are. So I hope this isn't met with laughter. Like, this is a very good thing.

• 21:07Matt Farah?

I mean, it's fairly common sense legislation.

• 21:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 21:11Matt Farah?

And I, and there's so many cars from the 1980s and 1990s that, uh, were imported, um, and are very valuable and were not originally built for California's emissions laws. And people want to drive them in California. It's a small number of them, but they're disproportionately valuable.

• 21:32Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 21:33Matt Farah?

And so if you could provide a path to drive those cars legally in California, you could collect an enormous amount of revenue from high net worth individuals who are willing to pay the tax to, to drive on Cal.

• 21:46Speaker 01

Right. I would hope that like, maybe they can tag something to it where it's like, "You can do this."

• 21:53Speaker 01

I just want people to stop avoiding with the Montana thing. Like, here's now the path, here's the emissions path. And if you live here, and you know you live here, you know, don't, don't skip town and use the Montana thing just to skip taxes.

• 22:06Matt Farah?

And I don't think that, I mean, people are always gonna find ways to cheat taxes.

• 22:11Speaker 01

  I know.

• 22:12Matt Farah?

I just, I think, I mean, and I'm, I'm, believe me, I am not an expert in taxes. Taxes fucking scare the shit out of me. Or anyway, getting on the wrong side of taxes, I should say, scare the shit out of me. I don't, it may be, honestly, like, on Montana, to stop letting people do that. I mean, it's Montana, Montana will allow you to create an LLC in Montana without living there, and register vehicles to that LLC without living there.

• 22:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:43Matt Farah?

Without having any physical, real address there at all.

• 22:46Speaker 01

But I think it's on, it would be on California, because Montana, if you do that and you're in Montana, like, you're not breaking the Montana law.

• 22:54Matt Farah?

No, you could have to have a, but you could, Montana could require you to have a physical address to own or lease a physical address.

• 23:01Speaker 01

Yeah, you need pressure from other states to make them do that.

• 23:03Matt Farah?

So many, so many states do that. I mean, so many states will allow you to, if I live in California, let's say, and, but I have a vacation home in wherever, fucking Kansas, then I can register the car in Kansas, and the bills and shit come to my house in California. Like, they allow that. But like, in Montana, like, you don't need to have property. So like, if they just, all of a sudden said, you have to own a property, it would cut out, I mean, maybe people, you know, maybe if you're buying fucking five Koenigzegs, then yeah.

• 23:33Speaker 01

It would shrink a lot of folks, though.

• 23:34Matt Farah?

But it, but it's too easy.

• 23:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:36Matt Farah?

  It's too fucking easy.

• 23:38Speaker 01

Yeah, what was the state everyone used before this? I mean, Montana's always been very friendly to it, but there's always been some.

• 23:43Matt Farah?

There was a Vermont, I think, for a while. I think Vermont, yeah, one of the Dakotas, like, there's, there's ways to do it, but like...

• 23:50Speaker 01

To get back to it, this emissions thing is great. And I think it also helps people who are not rich and trying to avoid taxes, but just have an old car, and, you know, just want to drive it around, and, and for them to go, oh, you gotta get the emissions going on this 84-less Sabre.

• 24:04Matt Farah?

Yeah, the idea that you would need to have a California-compliant catalytic converter for a, you know, car that hasn't been in production for 35 years, you know, is, is silly. It's just silly. The numbers don't make any sense.

• 24:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 24:22Matt Farah?

And so, anyway, if it's, I can't, I tried to comment, get the, get the, um, the California State Senator, uh, who, who put the, I don't have her, her name here, but I tried to get it, but I'm not in her district, and they were like, "Sorry, contact your own representative, like, you're not in her district," and I was like, I just wanted to get, like, I literally just wanted to ask, A, wanted to show support, and B, wanted to ask, like, was there a piece of information that was presented to you that caused you to, was it, was it from SEMA? Was it from a lobbyist, or was it like, a study? Because, remember they did that study, a couple of years ago, that people were freaking out about?

• 25:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:06Matt Farah?

About cars that were sat a lot in California? Maybe they were studying, like, vapor from fuel tanks, or whatever, trying to find out how often these classic cars are actually on the road versus parked?

• 25:19Speaker 01

You could probably contact her office, just as a journalist.

• 25:22Matt Farah?

I probably could. I, I, yes, that's true. I tried to go through the basic website constituent thing, maybe if I submit a media inquiry again, but I was just trying to find out if there was a specific study, and I, I didn't get anywhere, and I didn't try hard enough. But either way, I think it's a good idea, and so, that could be cool. That can be very helpful.

• 25:42Matt Farah?

Okay, Countach engine update. So, I got an email from Guido at Top Motors, and, uh, he said, you know, "Hello, Matt, nice, uh, just wanted to send an update. Your engine is about 50% of the way through, um, the rebuild. They've done the heads." Uh, and we, and he sent me a little photo album in Google Drive, and I have not looked through the photo album yet. So, for the people enjoying this on, uh, on YouTube, we can all look through them together, and I will try to describe as best we can what we see.

• 26:17Speaker 01

All right, well, let's go to the first one, I guess.

• 26:18Matt Farah?

Granted, there's a lot of shit I don't know. So, yeah, so, you know, the engine and the gearbox are in Italy. Oh, we've got bearings, right? Those are definitely new bearings.

• 26:29Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 26:29Matt Farah?

  Right?

• 26:30Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 26:30Matt Farah?

Got a bunch of new bearings there, along with what could be either an alternator or a starter motor, maybe? Not an alternator, maybe a starter motor?

• 26:41Matt Farah?

I don't know, but they've also sourced some of the parts. So the, the water pump, remember when we went up to Donny's and we found the water pump had been, had it been cracked and welded back together? So.

• 26:52Speaker 01

Poorly welded, let's just state that, yeah.

• 26:54Matt Farah?

At first, when they sent me the bill, the invoice of like, things we need, they were like, water pump. They were like, unfortunately, you need a water pump. And I was like, dude, we totally sent them the water pump, but then I forgot that the water pump. Well, I mean, not necessarily.

• 27:08Speaker 01

  It worked, that's true.

• 27:10Matt Farah?

It had been welded in the 90s.

• 27:11Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's a good point.

• 27:13Matt Farah?

But a new water pump, and a water pump housing is $6,000.

• 27:17Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 27:17Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 27:18Speaker 01

Put that other one back on there. It's worked, yeah, whatever.

• 27:21Matt Farah?

That's why the last dude welded it up, bro. It was crazy.

• 27:25Speaker 01

It had a buttress added, but whatever, it worked.

• 27:27Matt Farah?

So we've got bearings, uh, and I think those square things are camshaft cover caps.

• 27:35Speaker 01

  That would make sense.

• 27:35Matt Farah?

Keep going. I'm, I'm, by the way, I'm 100% going to get some of these parts wrong. We've got nice, clean, shiny metal. That's what this whole bench is covered in. Bits that go inside the engine.

• 27:47Speaker 01

Oh yeah, this is definitely camshaft related.

• 27:49Matt Farah?

  That's cam shit. Yeah, yeah.

• 27:50Speaker 01

Does it have variable cam timing?

• 27:52Matt Farah?

  No.

• 27:53Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 27:53Matt Farah?

No, that was invented in the 90s.

• 27:54Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 27:55Matt Farah?

Uh, what was the first, I think BMW Variocam, VTEC. I mean, actually, VTEC was literally the first one, I think.

• 28:03Speaker 01

Was that the first one, or did they simplify it and make it reliable? Well, BMW was like, uh, you know, we made it.

• 28:09Matt Farah?

Dude, I feel like Honda VTEC was, I feel like Honda invented variable valve timing. I'm pretty sure. If not, like, maybe it was Ferrari.

• 28:22Matt Farah?

But I'm pretty sure it was Honda.

• 28:24Speaker 01

  Actually.

• 28:25Matt Farah?

  No?

• 28:25Speaker 01

Corliss Orville Barant, American engineer, working in, uh, on a 65 Corvair.

• 28:32Matt Farah?

There was a Corvair with VTEC?

• 28:34Speaker 01

I think he developed it on that.

• 28:37Speaker 01

And then, oh, and how VTEC changed the world. I don't know. That'd take too long to look, but...

• 28:42Matt Farah?

  Well, that's cool.

• 28:43Speaker 01

That's very cool. Maybe he invented it and then someone went, "Oh, it's a good idea. Corliss thought of this."

• 28:46Matt Farah?

It had to be. The first production had to be Honda.

• 28:49Speaker 01

  Yeah, probably.

• 28:50Matt Farah?

Okay. So, here's, we have an Italian gentleman in, uh, in blue overalls, working on my engine block on a stand.

• 28:58Speaker 01

Alfa Romeo, first manufacturer to use VVT in production cars.

• 29:02Matt Farah?

  When was that?

• 29:03Speaker 01

1980 Alfa Spider 2000 had a mechanical VVT system. Then Honda in 89, uh, put it on stuff.

• 29:10Matt Farah?

  Alpha?

• 29:11Speaker 01

  Yeah, who would've thunk it?

• 29:12Matt Farah?

  Go get 'em, tiger.

• 29:16Speaker 01

Way to reach. Now, I mean, they have made some really impressive, uh, inventions, like racing engines.

• 29:22Matt Farah?

Yeah. Alright, so it's a, we have a man with, uh, in glasses and overalls, working on my engine. Zach, can you, do, what is he doing with those, are those, uh? I think those are head studs that he's putting in and lining up, I think.

• 29:37Speaker 01

  Probably...

• 29:38Matt Farah?

  I think.

• 29:39Speaker 01

That's what, yeah, probably what it looks like.

• 29:40Matt Farah?

Again, I am stupid. There's a bunch of rods sticking out of the...

• 29:44Speaker 01

Look, if there's not a YouTube video telling me how to do this that I just watched, I don't know what's happening.

• 29:50Matt Farah?

  Engine, engine?

• 29:52Speaker 01

  Engine, engine, man with engine.

• 29:53Matt Farah?

Man, I gotta get me a pair of those, of these overalls. You think, I'm gonna ask these guy to tack on a Salviole Top Motors overalls, so if I ever go to Goodwood Revival, I can fucking rock that shit.

• 30:04Speaker 01

That's a great idea. We desperately wanna go to that. Also, can we just talk about the tools on the wall here and how I've never seen any of these before in my entire, all of these, oh, these are all, uh, individual socket wrenches on extensions permanently with swivels at the bottom.

• 30:19Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 30:20Speaker 01

And they have key handles at the top. That's amazing.

• 30:22Matt Farah?

Dude, I guarantee you, that wall of tools... Is exclusive leaf, like this is what you need to work on a Countach V12.

• 30:30Speaker 01

  I agree.

• 30:31Matt Farah?

Is all of these and like nothing else.

• 30:33Speaker 01

Yeah, this is probably like a 4mm to a 13mm wrench.

• 30:37Matt Farah?

One, two, three, four. Yeah, it's like 15 swivel sockets on really long rods with T-handle.

• 30:45Speaker 01

  Amazing.

• 30:46Matt Farah?

  Yeah, it's awesome.

• 30:46Speaker 01

Look at this old thing. It's one of those old timey.

• 30:50Matt Farah?

  It's a hand drill.

• 30:50Speaker 01

Yeah, it's like a hand drill, like a hand crank. Wow.

• 30:52Matt Farah?

Like in shop class. Ooh, new rods and pistons. Those are brand new. We couldn't reuse any of mine, which is...

• 31:03Speaker 01

  Cheap.

• 31:04Matt Farah?

  Really expensive.

• 31:06Speaker 01

Sometimes it's cheaper to just buy a new one, you know? You know, like a wastebasket breaks and you go, "I could repair this," or "I could just order a new one." Is that what happened here? Is it cheaper to buy new ones? Yeah, he's nodding.

• 31:19Matt Farah?

Yep, yeah, it was. It was somehow.

• 31:22Speaker 01

What was wrong with your shit?

• 31:24Matt Farah?

  Ah, I don't know. Worn, old. I mean, I don't know. I don't know.

• 31:32Speaker 01

  That's a bummer.

• 31:33Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 31:33Speaker 01

Just like a super quick tangent, you know, because of when I'm like, "Repair shop says you should fix this." And I'm like, "Should I really? Are they just lying to me?" And I post a photo of my hoses and some guy who's a BMW tech in a different part of the country goes, "Wow, bro."

• 31:48Speaker 01

He's like, "I think those are original." That is really messy, so.

• 31:53Matt Farah?

Yeah, so these people know and I don't, so I'm listening to them. And if that's gonna cost me money, so be it.

• 31:59Speaker 01

  Alright.

• 31:59Matt Farah?

So yeah, installing, looks like we're installing rods and pistons. That's excellent. Very cool.

• 32:05Speaker 01

  That's a nice shot.

• 32:05Matt Farah?

Oh dude, look behind. Fucking subtle photo bomb. Do you see what that is? That's a silver Countach.

• 32:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 32:13Matt Farah?

Do you know how rare a silver Countach is?

• 32:15Speaker 01

  I have no idea.

• 32:16Matt Farah?

I think there's fucking like five of them.

• 32:18Speaker 01

Why was that so rare back then?

• 32:20Matt Farah?

I don't know. It was not, yeah, it was just not a thing Lambo was doing.

• 32:23Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 32:24Matt Farah?

Yeah, which I've seen, I think I've seen a photo of that car assembled and it's incredible.

• 32:29Speaker 01

Also, oh no, I thought it was right-hand drive. It's not.

• 32:32Matt Farah?

Oh, yeah, I don't know. It has a bunch of like interior things in it.

• 32:35Speaker 01

  Something behind it.

• 32:36Matt Farah?

Yeah. Okay, cool. Engine block. Oh shit, well, we could've just clicked one. That is indeed a silver fucking... God damn, is that awesome?

• 32:46Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's pretty cool.

• 32:46Matt Farah?

And then behind it, looks like...

• 32:50Matt Farah?

Possibly an Espada on the cover up there. It's a front-engine Lamborghini. It could be a 400 GT or possibly an Espada. And then there's a mirror, a green mirror in the back right of that photo.

• 33:08Speaker 01

This wheel arch, I was like, yours doesn't look like this. And I looked it up.

• 33:10Matt Farah?

This is an LP400, right? Yeah. Is there a picture of this car?

• 33:14Speaker 01

Uh, there is a picture of a silver car that I've found.

• 33:18Matt Farah?

  Silver LP400?

• 33:19Speaker 01

  Yeah, LP400.

• 33:20Matt Farah?

Yeah, they have the different shaped rear-wheel arches.

• 33:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's cool.

• 33:23Matt Farah?

  Yeah. Fucking sick. That's amazing.

• 33:26Speaker 01

  Alright.

• 33:27Matt Farah?

  Oh, look, a bell housing.

• 33:28Speaker 01

  There you go.

• 33:29Matt Farah?

There we go. We need that. I'm getting a new flywheel and clutch, so, um, uh, yeah, that's good news. Keep going. Is that it? Oh, more pistons, rods.

• 33:38Speaker 01

  Whoa, alright.

• 33:39Matt Farah?

Oh, crankshaft installed in the lower engine case. Cool. Crankshaft is a beast.

• 33:47Speaker 01

  Very shiny.

• 33:49Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 33:49Speaker 01

  That is beastie.

• 33:50Matt Farah?

We did not do the stroker crank on this one.

• 33:53Speaker 01

I think these are called journals, are they? They're thick, dude. This is a big crankshaft.

• 33:59Matt Farah?

  Tractor engine, man.

• 34:00Speaker 01

  Yeah, overbuilt tractor engine.

• 34:02Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 34:02Speaker 01

There you go. I think you're right on it. These are head stud install.

• 34:05Matt Farah?

Look in the back, I see an orange Diablo GT and I see a black Countach. Cool.

• 34:13Matt Farah?

Yep, things happening, engine things. Oh, that's my Bosch. Uh, they've rebuilt my Bosch injection system. CIS.

• 34:22Speaker 01

Okay. Oh, right, we talked about that, yeah.

• 34:24Matt Farah?

So we're keeping the injection system, but tuning it for the Euro cams and the Euro exhaust and the smog delete and the underdrive pulleys. We're not doing underdrive pulleys. Went right over Zach's head. He was lost in photos.

• 34:40Speaker 01

I was looking at, yeah. Uh, why aren't you? Are you not trying to win? Is that why you don't want underdrive pulleys? Do you not want to gain 4 horsepower for lots of money?

• 34:48Matt Farah?

I need 3 horsepower. And we're not doing carburetors because I like injection.

• 34:53Speaker 01

  Yeah, that makes sense.

• 34:54Matt Farah?

Yeah, I don't want to backdate. Okay, cool. Is that the end of it? Alright, great. So, along with this photos, these are beautiful photos, came a bill. So it was like...

• 35:03Speaker 01

Most expensive photos in the world.

• 35:04Matt Farah?

"Mister Vara, I have sent photos. Please send 22,000 euros."

• 35:09Matt Farah?

  Fuck!

• 35:10Speaker 01

It's a good thing you're selling the Bentley.

• 35:11Matt Farah?

We're getting there. Yeah, Bentley goes live Wednesday, Wednesday the 5th. And then we're gonna have the

• 35:17Speaker 01

The day after the show airs.

• 35:18Matt Farah?

The end of, end of show, you know. Santino's Mercedes is up on, on Bring a Trailer right now. Check it out. It's a really nice E63S with super low miles and warranty until October. And that auction ends Tuesday. No, it's on Bring a Trailer.

• 35:38Speaker 01

  Oh, sorry.

• 35:39Matt Farah?

And there's a, there's a Instagram post I did about it that, that shows it, that, the gray one, right? Uh, yeah. It's a diamond graphite metallic, real nice interior, really well-kept. Uh, we just did like the super detail on it too. It looks like a fucking brand-new car. It's actually awesome. It, it, 14,000 miles and it actually presents as if it has even less. Santino's a real skinny boy, so he doesn't abuse his leather when he gets in and out of it.

• 36:09Speaker 01

  He doesn't drop into it.

• 36:10Matt Farah?

  He's not creasing that shit.

• 36:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:11Matt Farah?

Yeah. These are rad. This is the twin-turbo, all-wheel-drive, no hybrid. Um, just, just 600 horsepower of, of meat.

• 36:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:21Matt Farah?

  It's a very good car.

• 36:21Speaker 01

Also, a good indicator that you can have ride height, but still look mean. Like, this has plenty of clearance, still has a lot of attitude. You don't need to drop your car on the ground and scrape shit.

• 36:30Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 36:31Speaker 01

  All the time.

• 36:32Matt Farah?

Should we talk about Carrera T?

• 36:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:34Matt Farah?

  Uh, loved it.

• 36:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:36Matt Farah?

Just, just spectacular. This is a great fucking car. This, like, everything about this is nice. And I firmly believe if you're gonna get a 911 cab, you want one with a, a pretty soft suspension. You don't want like, the hard, like a turbo-esque cab, like, you don't want that. Cause like, the softer, the softness of the T, it's pretty soft in soft mode, which is good. It works well with the Cabriolet.

• 37:01Speaker 01

It lends itself to the attitude of the car.

• 37:03Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 37:04Speaker 01

I think getting, trying to make convertible race car just does not make sense to me, or super sports car. Like, it's gonna be a great GT thing, you wanna put the top down and cruise, like, that's the attitude, so, soft suspension.

• 37:16Matt Farah?

Yeah, but the 6-speed shifter, great.

• 37:19Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 37:20Matt Farah?

The, the seats. I said 14-way in the post, they're 18-way, sorry, whatever.

• 37:26Matt Farah?

Uh, they're 18-way seats with this beautiful cloth tartan, just, I didn't love the wheels. Um, but it really drove nice. It's, it's like... It's just a row of 8.7s across the board.

• 37:39Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 37:40Matt Farah?

Everything. Traffic, canyons, highway, you know, going to dinner. Anything you could do with a car. Obviously, if you're doing track work, you want the coupe. But, but for anything else, this is just so fucking great. And I could happily have this and not be thinking about more, more 911.

• 38:01Speaker 01

Yeah, I agree. I mean, it's exactly what I drove in the coupe, but it's got, it's roofless.

• 38:05Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 38:06Speaker 01

  So, okay.

• 38:07Matt Farah?

It's just, it's a very, very, it doesn't feel like, I feel like people, you know, 911 people don't want to get a base car. They never want a base car. So this doesn't feel like a base car.

• 38:20Speaker 01

  No.

• 38:21Matt Farah?

It feels like it's got a bunch of good stuff in it. And, and if you put your foot down, it is properly quick. It's got nice brakes, it's got a great ride, great steering, it's so nice.

• 38:31Speaker 01

It's well-respected by enthusiast community, obviously. So it's, like, this is better to me than just getting a Carrera.

• 38:39Matt Farah?

  Oh, for sure.

• 38:39Speaker 01

Because that's the base car. This feels special, but it's, it's like a bargain.

• 38:43Matt Farah?

And I'd rather drive it on the street than like a GT3.

• 38:46Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 38:46Matt Farah?

It's, it's really nice and just all the time. On the highway and shit, oh, it's great. It was so nice.

• 38:54Speaker 01

It's a great cruiser. The front is huge.

• 38:56Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 38:56Speaker 01

We know that. But like, as a pretty practical machine, and it's not 600 horsepower, it's not super fast, but it's definitely fast enough. Like, once you get into the power band, the thing hauls ass.

• 39:08Matt Farah?

It's, it's faster than 390 horsepower would suggest. It does, you know, all 911s are faster than whatever their horsepower number would suggest, but particularly these turbo motors, I mean, they're, they're, and with the manual, you don't have to put it into sport mode every time, so it's not bogging. It, it, it feels really, really, the 3-liter engine is really well-matched to this 6-speed manual gearbox. It's really good. The clutch is so light. Everything about it is involving without being tiring. You know, you could drive this car for eight hours like I'd love to do one of the road and track events.

• 39:52Matt Farah?

In in one of these, that would be fucking great.

• 39:54Speaker 01

And someone, someone in the chat asked, would we rather have this or the SL 63? I'd have this all day.

• 40:00Matt Farah?

  A hundred percent.

• 40:01Speaker 01

I hate the SL's interior. It feels claustrophobic and I hate the giant tablet.

• 40:05Matt Farah?

I get the hybrid on Wednesday.

• 40:06Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 40:07Matt Farah?

We'll see what happens with that, but I mean, there I there, there's nothing that this car isn't very good at. Including track work. We had a Carrera T coupe. You know, on performance car of the year last year, it was a fucking good time. Really fun.

• 40:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:25Matt Farah?

So how I I didn't actually get the window sticker for this one because it's a European model. What were the coupes?

• 40:33Speaker 01

The one I had was optioned like 130 something. I mean, they start. They start high. It's it's inflation thing. It's still priced along with or it's priced like accordingly. Compared to the other ones, it hasn't actually gone up that much in price compared to when they started at like 103.

• 40:49Matt Farah?

  Asterisk, asterisk.

• 40:50Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 40:51Matt Farah?

It's a lot cheaper than a GT3 for sure, and it's still an excellent sports car. That's used totally daily drivable. When I went back to the Spyder though, I gave it back.

• 41:02Speaker 01

  The cab starts at 149.

• 41:03Matt Farah?

  Yeah, that's expensive.

• 41:04Speaker 01

  That is expensive.

• 41:05Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 41:08Speaker 01

What was the GTS you you drove? How much was that one?

• 41:12Speaker 01

  The red one.

• 41:12Matt Farah?

  The red, the GTS cab?

• 41:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 41:14Matt Farah?

  Oh, it was expensive. 180.

• 41:16Speaker 01

  That's wild.

• 41:17Matt Farah?

Yeah, it was really expensive. It was also a four. So it was like all wheel drive. Yeah, it was. It was up. And then ceramic brakes. I mean, it was fucking way up there. I think spec for spec, you save. Probably. Twenty grand, twenty-five grand, getting a T versus a GTS. But stick, I mean, it's it comes down to like, do you want to drive stick? Like, here's how you're gonna do it. There's no stick GTS.

• 41:46Speaker 01

And the cab is a fourteen thousand dollar premium, uh, over the coupe.

• 41:52Matt Farah?

I, you know, neither you nor I would buy the cab. But I do have to say that as a, for a week as a press car, I loved it. I put the top down all the time.

• 42:02Speaker 01

And that interior stuff, the sound ending on that top is amazing. It feels like a rigid top.

• 42:07Matt Farah?

Yeah, it feels like more like a coupe than most cloth tops do, yeah. I, I, I, I'm such a big fan of this fucking thing. It's so great. And then when I went back to the Spyder the next day, I drove the Spyder, I took Thad out to dinner. And the Spyder is just such a monster by comparison, but it's, it's, you know, I never like, I don't want to get in the Spyder to like go to the grocery store, but I would hop in the nine, in the Carrera T like all day to just do anything and just use it as a car. The Spyder like, I can't, I've tried to make it feel like a full-on regular car, like, that's too hard. It's, I, I don't, I'm not inspired to go take it for normal errands. I drive it a bunch, but like this would be like,

• 42:48Matt Farah?

it's one of the first cars in a long time that would make me consider daily driving a manual transmission again, even in this city.

• 42:55Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 42:55Matt Farah?

  Yeah, it's easy. It's so.

• 42:57Speaker 01

It is very easy. Yeah. It's still a pain in the butt, but it is.

• 42:59Matt Farah?

It is. Yeah. It's not, it's no take in, no use take in.

• 43:03Speaker 01

  Right.

• 43:03Matt Farah?

Speaking of which, picked it up from service. Uh, it wasn't actually really serviced. I had a, a major software update that apparently will lead to, lead to fewer major software updates. Supposedly, this hard update plugged into the fucking thing

• 43:23Matt Farah?

made the over-the-air update system much more powerful.

• 43:27Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 43:28Matt Farah?

That was one of the things. Um, we also had a little bit of bugginess on our road trip, just a couple little software-y hiccups that I'm hoping that helped. And they replaced my portable charge cable, which there was a recall for. That was it.

• 43:41Speaker 01

Cool. How long did it take to do the update?

• 43:44Matt Farah?

Uh, one day. Dropped it off.

• 43:47Speaker 01

So it's similar to like with the Mach-E, you had to drop it off and took a long time. They gotta plug it in and wait. Yeah.

• 43:52Matt Farah?

It's the, the data transfer is not that fast.

• 43:54Speaker 01

  Right.

• 43:55Matt Farah?

And it has to like restart a whole bunch of times and who knows what they're doing, but I swear to God, it could have just been in my head. Particularly because I was just driving a TRD Sequoia, which we can talk about later. And the UI was like mad clunky. I got in the Taycan when I picked it up from the dealer and I swear CarPlay felt faster. Like just the responses to my touches, it felt like quicker.

• 44:18Speaker 01

  The refresh rate was better.

• 44:18Matt Farah?

But it might have just been quicker than a Sequoia.

• 44:21Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 44:21Matt Farah?

So, I don't really know, but felt good to be back in it though. Man, driving that thing is fucking sick. So nice to drive it.

• 44:28Speaker 01

It seemed like a good idea.

• 44:29Matt Farah?

Oh, man. Okay. Should I read the craziest email ever?

• 44:36Speaker 01

  Sure, yeah.

• 44:37Matt Farah?

I sent this to you because I was like, I think I have to. I haven't done this in a long time. And I, and... Because frankly, a lot of the, a lot of the really, the real nuts kind of sorted themselves out and found other places to play. Which is nice. Most of our fans are like real fans.

• 44:55Speaker 01

  Right.

• 44:56Matt Farah?

You know, or at the very least like somewhat regular people.

• 44:59Speaker 01

There was an era where there were a lot of viewers and listeners that kind of sat there with their arms crossed like, "Let's see what these fuckers say now."

• 45:06Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 45:07Speaker 01

And then they would like to write a comment, so.

• 45:08Matt Farah?

But like, as we know, in our current, you know, this, this pre-fascism state of our country, you know, there's a, there's an information ecosystem out there that like, most people don't really know about, but like has very much affected a certain segment of the population. So here's an email. This is in response, R.E. Taycan. So, Dave, this is David, he doesn't have a last name. And he wants to talk about the Taycan. "Matt," and I'm going to read this as written.

• 45:46Speaker 01

  As spelled.

• 45:48Matt Farah?

"Matt, vaccinated, duded, love their electric cars. You know that you've been pumped full of self-assembling nanotechnology and emit a BLE signal with your very unique MAC address, right? I didn't know if I wanted to laugh or cry when you monkeys masked up, and I definitely wanted to cry when you monkeys got quote, 'vaccinated.' Knock yourself out with that vaccine mobile. Ha ha, I fucking hate EVs, David."

• 46:29Matt Farah?

That's a very normal thing to write a person.

• 46:33Speaker 01

You know what else would happen today that this person might be interested to read?

• 46:40Matt Farah?

No! How long has he had the job? Like 18 days?

• 46:45Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 46:45Matt Farah?

Has it even been that long? How long has he had the job?

• 46:48Speaker 01

  Not long.

• 46:49Matt Farah?

He's telling people to get vaccinated. Um, I, I, we had, I got measles vaccinated when I was a kid.

• 46:56Speaker 01

  Right.

• 46:56Matt Farah?

  That's all you need, right?

• 46:57Speaker 01

  That's all you do, yeah.

• 46:58Matt Farah?

We don't need a booster, right?

• 46:59Speaker 01

  And then Mars.

• 46:59Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 47:00Speaker 01

  You get that.

• 47:00Matt Farah?

Yeah, like a fucking regular person.

• 47:03Speaker 01

A lot of people pushing against it, and now there's a unfortunately like legit tragic measles outbreak happening in Texas. And RFK Junior yesterday said, "Actually, you should go get this vaccine." Two days after, he was like, "Yeah, it's gonna happen." So, but, it's alright, but David is speaking, of course...

• 47:17Matt Farah?

I can't wait for polio to come out.

• 47:18Speaker 01

David's talking about a different vaccine.

• 47:19Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 47:20Speaker 01

That, you know, a lot of people got in 2020.

• 47:23Matt Farah?

  I don't know, like...

• 47:24Speaker 01

  But it's, it's very aggressive.

• 47:26Matt Farah?

Like and subscribe to my BLE signal.

• 47:28Speaker 01

  It's a lot, there's a lot in there.

• 47:29Matt Farah?

You can find it at my unique MAC address.

• 47:31Speaker 01

There's a lot in that email.

• 47:33Matt Farah?

  There's a lot.

• 47:33Speaker 01

  There's a lot.

• 47:34Matt Farah?

There's a lot, dude. You think, you think his family likes him?

• 47:41Speaker 01

  Cause they're afraid.

• 47:42Matt Farah?

No, like, is this person, is that person even capable of having a fucking... Like, they're Charlie Day in a room full of strings and pins connecting shit.

• 47:53Speaker 01

  Yeah, maybe, for, yeah, sure.

• 47:54Matt Farah?

Can you even have a conversation with someone like that?

• 47:57Speaker 01

  No.

• 47:57Matt Farah?

What are you supposed to do?

• 47:58Speaker 01

  No.

• 47:59Matt Farah?

  That's, that's...

• 47:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 48:00Matt Farah?

  That person is fucking fun.

• 48:01Speaker 01

When they, when they start going into, like, you know, I don't wanna get into the vaccine debate of like, heart issues and whatnot, but once they go into Bill Gates is putting nanotechnology inside you, I'm like, "Oh." I don't, there's not gonna be a discussion, it's gonna be, it's gonna be a one-way discussion for each of us.

• 48:18Matt Farah?

A hundred to one, bro, that this motherfucker would chug like a 32-ounce Mountain Dew right now, and doesn't know what three-quarters of the ingredient in that fucking beverage are. Couldn't tell you what like, you know, Axiosapam...

• 48:36Speaker 01

  Right, absolutely, right?

• 48:38Matt Farah?

Whatever the fuck is in Mountain, and he's like, "Love, I'm loving it."

• 48:40Speaker 01

Prescription drugs, other things, yeah, no problem. Alcohol, not good for you.

• 48:45Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 48:45Speaker 01

  Right.

• 48:46Matt Farah?

Yeah. Anyway, that's fun, keep 'em coming.

• 48:52Matt Farah?

So, uh, yeah, we should go to the people, right?

• 48:54Speaker 01

We can go to the people. We have a lot of things from the people.

• 48:57Matt Farah?

We should go to the people, and of course, if you wanna be one of the people, patreon.com/thesmokingtirepodcast. Support the show, ask us questions for the show, catch the livestream, catch the show. Before anybody else, get an ad-free viewing and listening experience, and get an extra show every month at the pro-driver level. The special show for special people just like you. Let's see what we have. I still can't figure out if reading the TV is better with my reading glasses or without them. It's sort of a... I think it's better with them. Uh, Hyman Roth, "Name a vehicle that was available as a stick and an automatic that you'd rather have the automatic." Oh, this is very easy.

• 49:41Matt Farah?

  Any pickup truck or SUV.

• 49:43Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's true.

• 49:45Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 49:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:47Matt Farah?

  I mean, that's... To me, there's nothing fun about driving a truck that's a stick. I don't give a shit.

• 49:52Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm, I agree.

• 49:53Matt Farah?

Uh, here from Matt's Cats. Uh, man, you should've seen how happy my cats were when we got home last night. We had four cats in the bed last night. You have never... You haven't fucking lived until you've woken up at 2:00 a.m. to four sleeping cats in your bed. It is the best.

• 50:10Speaker 01

Did you wake up because the cats were annoying you by being in the bed? Or you just woke up because you woke up?

• 50:15Matt Farah?

I mean, I wake up a couple of times throughout the night. Um, but, but in this particular case, I woke up because I couldn't move because I had cat-leg-cat-leg-cat.

• 50:25Speaker 01

  Right, okay.

• 50:26Matt Farah?

It was... I was frozen like Han Solo.

• 50:29Speaker 01

And if you have a fifth cat, that's the one that interrogates you.

• 50:34Matt Farah?

Uh, okay, here from Matt's Cats. "Is there a rule for watch-face-size relation to wrist-size? Or do you just eyeball it?" Uh, asking for all the dudes out there with dainty little princess wrists. No, you eyeball it. I mean, and, and anyone can rock anything. I've seen dudes with big-ass fucking gorilla wrists pull off like little 34-millimeter vintage joints. And during the big watch craze of 2014 to 2016, everybody had a huge panera, even if you had a tiny little wrist. So you could, you could go either way. There's no, there isn't a mathematical rule. I mean, if you've got a really small wrist, and I'm talking like a low, a low six inch joint, um, you probably want to look at like

• 51:18Matt Farah?

  a 36 millimeter watch.

• 51:20Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 51:20Matt Farah?

Um, that's just like a smaller men's watch.

• 51:23Speaker 01

What's the, what are the, um?

• 51:24Matt Farah?

I'm wearing this Omega Speed, that's 41. That's, I like 41 because it's like, if you have a small wrist, it'll be a little big.

• 51:32Speaker 01

  Small width.

• 51:33Matt Farah?

  Small width.

• 51:33Speaker 01

Got a little, got a little width.

• 51:35Matt Farah?

If you have a little width.

• 51:36Speaker 01

  It's a media watch.

• 51:37Matt Farah?

It'll be a little big, but it'll still pull it off. And if you have a bigger wrist, it works.

• 51:40Speaker 01

  Oh, nice.

• 51:41Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah. I, I have a big wrist, so I can't wear anything under 40. But if you have a smaller wrist, yeah, third, stuff in the 30s is where you live. Uh, Justin Gerard says, okay, wait, how can I justify a new 911T versus a used 718 GTS 4 liter? They're different cars and experiences, but how would you compare them? New versus used isn't really fair. Uh, it's a tough one to do. So you still, I think, can order a new G718 GTS 4.0. So like, let's call, let's go use for, are you, new for new. New for new, uh, a GTS 4 liter is a car that's in the 90s, right?

• 52:23Speaker 01

  It's 40 grand cheaper.

• 52:24Matt Farah?

  Forty grand savings.

• 52:26Speaker 01

  That's.

• 52:26Matt Farah?

To me, that's enormous, and I would rather have the Cayman or the Boxer.

• 52:31Speaker 01

  Forty grand, yeah.

• 52:32Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 52:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 52:33Matt Farah?

Some people just have, they, they can't be seen in, or they have to have a 911, okay. Some people need the backseat for their kids, okay. Me, I, I would not trade, I don't think that, excuse me. I think that's a much better value. Even new for new. Um, good question. What exotic car owners are more, most likely to be, to, uh, are most likely to evade taxes using, I mean?

• 53:02Matt Farah?

  Dude, almost, almost 100% of...

• 53:09Matt Farah?

I have never once, I don't think, seen a California-registered Pagani or Koenigsegg.

• 53:15Speaker 01

Yeah, I was gonna say, hypercar owners, you know, anything, anything over that price.

• 53:20Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 53:20Speaker 01

Especially, and that extroverted for some reason, yeah, but they're usually hiding some money somewhere.

• 53:26Matt Farah?

Well, yeah, 10% sales, they don't want to pay a half a million dollars in sales tax.

• 53:31Speaker 01

  Right.

• 53:33Matt Farah?

And I understand that, because who does? But like, you've just bought a 3, 3.5 million dollar car. Uh, grilled tail of the dragon, assuming Nissan had the budget to pull it off, what would your dream R36 GT-R look like spec-wise?

• 53:51Matt Farah?

I think it would be a manual gearbox with a twin-turbo inline-six, driving the rear wheels, and a very mild hybrid system driving the front wheels.

• 54:06Speaker 01

I would go with, um, a PDK-like gearbox, because I think the GT-R has always been about maximum speed and technology. So I would go dual-clutch, a fast one, but with torque fill, kind of like the E-Ray. So it just makes it as quick as possible, but I would want, um, engine-driven wheels, four-engine-driven wheels.

• 54:30Matt Farah?

  Loose scunt. That's fucking good.

• 54:33Speaker 01

  That's very funny.

• 54:35Matt Farah?

Cadillac is joining F1 in 2026. Uh, should we expect an F1-powered Cadillac hypercar in the future? Uh, or a vastly more sporting lineup? Uh, alternatively, why is Caddy joining F1?

• 54:50Speaker 01

Well, they're joining F1 partly because GM is joining F1, that's what's happening. Cadillac just has, is the racing name.

• 54:58Speaker 01

For like LMP1 and all that kind of stuff, so that's what it is. And I think GM's coming into F1 as an engine supplier.

• 55:04Matt Farah?

It's not gonna, it's not gonna have much to do with the, with the road cars. But like dude, both, both of the Blackwings are best in class dynamically.

• 55:13Speaker 01

  Yeah, true.

• 55:14Matt Farah?

So, like, they already have a very sporting lineup. Now, would I like to see a, a sports car from Cadillac? Like, always I would, but I'd love to see a Corvette-based Cadillac. I mean, I thought actually, I actually thought they were really on to something with the XLR. I, I thought it should have had a Corvette motor and not a fucking North Star.

• 55:34Speaker 01

Well, now you have the mid-engine configuration, so you could really supercar it up.

• 55:38Matt Farah?

Yeah, you could, there's a lot you could do with a, with a Corvette-based Cadillac. And, and it was, it's a bummer they didn't keep the XLR thing going, because I thought it was rad, actually.

• 55:49Matt Farah?

I don't know what that is.

• 55:51Speaker 01

  Here's what-

• 55:51Matt Farah?

Koji Koji wants to know about, what's it called?

• 55:54Speaker 01

The Adro, Adro front, new front end for M2s, for the new M2. Does it fix what is wrong with it? I think that looks way better.

• 56:02Matt Farah?

I think it looks better, it makes it look like the M8, kind of.

• 56:05Speaker 01

Yeah, that looks, yeah, that's exactly right.

• 56:08Matt Farah?

I think it does look better, yeah. I would wanna make sure that the car cools properly. Because, I mean, I don't necessarily take them 100% of their word, but BMW people said, were saying, like, it all has to look like that for the cooling, so I wouldn't want to trade style for functionality.

• 56:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:26Matt Farah?

But I do think that looks better, yeah. Because I've never heard of this company, do they make quality product?

• 56:30Speaker 01

I have no idea, never heard, never heard of them either.

• 56:33Matt Farah?

I, it makes the car look more like the older car.

• 56:36Speaker 01

  I would say, well-done, design-wise.

• 56:38Matt Farah?

I, I really do think that is an improvement, yeah.

• 56:44Matt Farah?

Jared says, "You call the reviews with two of you, two takes is an obvious reference to the OG. One take was double take ever a name contender."

• 56:54Speaker 01

We talked about it once, but I, but my point was that one take, one and two and three.

• 56:59Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 56:59Speaker 01

And double take is like, single take, double take, so it's just slightly different.

• 57:03Matt Farah?

  Yeah, mathematically.

• 57:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 57:05Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 57:08Speaker 01

And a double take is usually done by a single person. You do a double take.

• 57:11Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 57:11Speaker 01

So, we were doing two takes.

• 57:13Matt Farah?

Sure. Stolberg, Zach, wants to know, what, will your family buy an EV? And do you?

• 57:22Speaker 01

Not until we get a house that has charging, and an R2 looks cool. So does the R3, of course. I don't know what we would buy, though.

• 57:29Matt Farah?

Is there any power in your garage?

• 57:31Speaker 01

Yeah, no, there are people that have EV spots.

• 57:33Matt Farah?

  There are?

• 57:34Speaker 01

But you have to just sign up for them. I don't know if they're full. Someone has, a couple of people. There's one, there's an R1T, a couple of other stuff. Someone has a Lyric, surprisingly. They seem to love it.

• 57:43Matt Farah?

Uh, hey, if they've put enough on the hood. Maxfield says, "It seems like the car community skews more conservative than liberal, at least here in Miami and from what I see online." No shit. "Do you think this is because car enthusiasm focuses more on individualism, competition and freedom versus social welfare? Or could it be that car culture is more prevalent outside of densely populated cities?"

• 58:14Matt Farah?

  Well, okay.

• 58:15Speaker 01

I mean, I think the argument that conservatism focuses more on individualism and expression, I think, is a faulty one. I mean, I think that's just like, you're gonna probably support, like, it's clear where this person comes from, I think, and what side you're on. But I think both sides have been, have shown constraint on the individual. So I think that's kind of a flawed argument.

• 58:43Matt Farah?

I, I think it's, part of it is more regional.

• 58:48Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm, yeah.

• 58:49Matt Farah?

You know, you're gonna have more car culture in a place where you've got more driving, right?

• 58:59Matt Farah?

And I think it's it's more reflective of the of the the the region than the than the fact that it's a that it's car enthusiasts. I think if it was chess enthusiasts in one region versus another, you may find a very similar divide.

• 59:16Speaker 01

  Right.

• 59:17Matt Farah?

Um, I do think that it's not directly related to the question, but I do think that we need to, as car enthusiasts, draw a real distinction between car enthusiasm and car dependency, that we fucked that up. It's not related directly to the question, but like, there's people that like, sort of misunderstand urban, people who are into urbanists that mistakenly group car enthusiasts into this sort of group of people that are like, "You'll never take my car away," when no one's trying to take their car away. Um, and I do think conservatism

• 59:55Matt Farah?

embraces more of the like, "Fuck environmentalism. Fuck you got mine. I want a big fucking truck 'cause freedom. I'm gonna roll coal 'cause freedom. I'm gonna do these donuts and these burnouts 'cause freedom." Like, pretty, I think that lines up pretty well, whereas like, a leftist is not gonna like, roll coal. Like, a leftist might like, hit the canyons, go to a track day, you know, do something else that is like, a little more, uh, uh, aware of of what your impact might be on things around you.

• 1:00:38Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:00:38Matt Farah?

But a lot of like, specifically on like YouTube and shit, a lot of like, the that kind of stuff does lean a little, you know.

• 1:00:48Speaker 01

I completely agree with that. Sure. I mean, if people are... I don't want to put you into like, single-issue voters, but yes, like, anyone who was against EPA regulations on the aftermarket and were loud about it, most of them were probably leaning or voting conservative versus just going, "Well, I'm leftist, but this actually is very misguided," which we have said sometimes, like, "The rules on old cars seems misguided and unnecessary," even though I'd say we're both environmentally minded.

• 1:01:14Matt Farah?

Sure, yeah. I think, I think, yeah, you can be both pragmatic and pro-clean air.

• 1:01:22Speaker 01

Yeah. And like, regarding social welfare, I would say that just because people need social support may not tell you that they are not car enthusiasts, they just don't have the money to have a car. But, you know, there's plenty of people that have never driven a car, five-year-olds are a good example, and they love them, and they like seeing them, they like being around them, even if they can't afford them.

• 1:01:42Matt Farah?

Mm-hmm. Again, here for Matt's Cats, "My local coffee and bagel place has been a huge hit. I suggested they host a Cars and Coffee." He said, "I'd love to. Tell me how to set it up. Any advice?" Get someone whose job it is, is to put on car events to do it. Don't have the bagel place do it. Just make the bagel place be available to provide the bagels and the coffee, and maybe prepare for a busier day than normal. And then have somebody else, a third party, set up, a car club of any kind, set up that event.

• 1:02:16Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's a good idea.

• 1:02:17Matt Farah?

Yeah. Be happy the bagel place will have you. Don't give him more work to do. Just have them make bagels. "Angle of the dangle. What car from Sordid would you want to own the most, and what would you change about it?" That was a really long time ago. What car do I remember from that show? There was a really cool RSTI Subaru that I loved driving, but it got overheated and took crap on the racetrack.

• 1:02:48Matt Farah?

And I mean, that Viper was just like batshit.

• 1:02:51Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:02:52Matt Farah?

  The Calvo Viper.

• 1:02:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:02:53Matt Farah?

That's one of the fastest things I've ever driven in my life. It was just crazy. Uh, that was a good time. Those are the only two cars I really remember.

• 1:03:00Speaker 01

Yeah, I don't remember at all. I actually was mixing up Sordid with the show we did in Palm Springs that I can't remember the name of. With the, like, with the BBI car and the Maximum Motorsports Mustang.

• 1:03:09Matt Farah?

  Tuned.

• 1:03:10Speaker 01

Was it Tuned? We did a shootout? Oh, it was Tuned Shootout?

• 1:03:13Matt Farah?

Tuned Shootout. Tuned Tuner Car Shootout, which was fun. Uh, JKAT says, "There's a gated shifter conversion for NA Miata's by a company, Minotek. Either way, what cars deserve this type of treatment?" Um, I mean, any car, dude. Gated shifters are fun. I'm pro gated shifters. I've seen them in, uh, I've seen a conversion, I think, for a Corvette at one point. Uh, this guy's Miata, uh, conversion looks very nice. I mean, if you, dude, that doesn't look all that different from like a Mercy.

• 1:03:44Speaker 01

Of course not. It's just, it's all this milled aluminum. That's all it is.

• 1:03:47Matt Farah?

It looks like a, basically like a Lambo console.

• 1:03:50Speaker 01

And, I mean, it adds the click click, which is magical. Nothing against this.

• 1:03:54Matt Farah?

No, I'm, I'm, I'm pro all of it and any car, uh, that is a stick shift where really fast gear changes aren't required.

• 1:04:04Speaker 01

I was gonna say, just be ready to shift a little bit slower.

• 1:04:07Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:07Speaker 01

So if your car is like, oh, I mean, like, look, this, this picture here, this guy's got Momo seats, you know, kind of aggressive track setup type of thing, and then all of a sudden your shift slows down a little bit.

• 1:04:16Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:17Speaker 01

But engagement and joy goes up.

• 1:04:18Matt Farah?

It's a good time. Shout out to this guy and, and, and, I mean, I would say pretty much any car. I've, you know, I've found in actual Ferraris though, in like 430s and stuff, is tho- those cars have a really light flywheel and so you actually, with the gated shifter, have to feather the throttle a little bit in between your gear changes.

• 1:04:37Speaker 01

  Ooh.

• 1:04:38Matt Farah?

You can't, it's, it's okay. Like, it's just a different kind of driving.

• 1:04:41Speaker 01

But it's not optimal for the engine.

• 1:04:44Matt Farah?

The engine isn't designed, the engine was designed for the F1 gearbox. Yeah.

• 1:04:49Matt Farah?

Ivan Capote is debating whether or not to do a manual conversion on a Mercedes C63.

• 1:04:54Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:04:55Matt Farah?

I, I wonder, is it always the manual version of a car that gets more valuable when time passes? I can't think of an example that's not the case. Is that because of the enthusiast tax? Yes and yes, and also like, old automatics were shitty. Like, it wasn't like you're talking about a 6-speed manual versus a 7-speed PDK with like, perfectly rev-match downshifts. You're talking about a manual 4-speed manual Heerst shifter versus like, a 3-speed auto slushbox.

• 1:05:25Speaker 01

Yeah, or the auto in that C63 is not that good.

• 1:05:28Matt Farah?

Yeah. I, I think a manual conversion on that sounds very hard, but like, you have our blessing.

• 1:05:34Speaker 01

  Super fun, excellent, yes.

• 1:05:36Matt Farah?

Zach's High-Centered STI, okay, we're in New York, about to leave for a Cannonball. You have to drive a Gremlin or a Yugo. I don't even want to drive a Cannonball in a, in a perfect car. I don't want to drive a Cannonball in a Bentley GT Speed with massage seats. I don't want to drive a Cannonball, period. There's nothing about being in a car for 30 hours without really getting out that is appealing to me, at all.

• 1:06:04Speaker 01

I would, I think Gremlin? I'll go Gremlin. Just because of Wayne's World.

• 1:06:11Matt Farah?

Yeah, I mean, I think a Gremlin could go fast. A Gremlin had like a 6-cylinder engine, like, and could actually probably go like highway speeds, whereas a Yugo is like a 1-liter shitbox.

• 1:06:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, terrible car.

• 1:06:24Matt Farah?

So, I mean, I guess Gremlin, but, um, okay.

• 1:06:31Matt Farah?

Stu Dogg says, circling back to the spring spacer conversion. Someone I knew who worked at the local Ford store, the normal PDI for the Focus did not mention spring spacers, because they usually weren't included. Only the RS models that shipped from Europe had them. So, yeah, if a Toyota dealer is typically getting cars from whatever the Chattanooga plant, and this one comes from Japan, from the special factory, you know...

• 1:06:58Matt Farah?

That could be why, but like, that's a pretty silly excuse.

• 1:07:01Speaker 01

Or whoever's doing prep doesn't know that this is a special Corolla, not a regular Corolla. And they have spacers, but...

• 1:07:08Matt Farah?

  On a press car?

• 1:07:09Speaker 01

  That's bad.

• 1:07:10Matt Farah?

  Come on!

• 1:07:10Speaker 01

  No, no, that's bad.

• 1:07:11Matt Farah?

Like, that's fu... That's like, people are like, "Oh, they just juiced their cars for the press." They're fucking, all the press cars are hot rodded, like, not all of them.

• 1:07:20Speaker 01

  Hamstrings.

• 1:07:21Matt Farah?

Not all of them, my friends.

• 1:07:22Speaker 01

But also, from the company that literally rewrote the book on how to manufacture things, like, people, like, every company basically uses the Toyota method. They need a QC for special edition cars coming in and taking out the spring spacers.

• 1:07:35Matt Farah?

Oh, Chris N. coming in hot with the question. Every couple of shows, someone asks me a "would you rather" question, when I pretty much already own one of the cars.

• 1:07:51Matt Farah?

And the "would you rather" question is a 718 GT4 or a 991.1 GT3? Dude, I have a Spyder. I have a 718 Spyder. That's the s... I already had that option on the table. It was there. Could've done it. Didn't do it. So the "would you rather" was pre-solved. Not trying to be a dick, but like, I did that!

• 1:08:16Speaker 01

I would go GT3 for the investment.

• 1:08:17Matt Farah?

  There's no investment in a 2014 GT3.

• 1:08:20Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:08:21Matt Farah?

That is the only, that's like a non-buy.

• 1:08:23Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:08:23Matt Farah?

PDK only, all the engines replaced. That's a fucking, that's the one you buy for a beater track rat car. That is not an investment-grade GT3, and it's possibly the only non-investment-grade GT3. Seriously.

• 1:08:37Speaker 01

Leave it to me to choose.

• 1:08:39Matt Farah?

  There's a reason, that, dude, that GT3 is cheaper than 996 GT3s. There's a reason for that.

• 1:08:46Speaker 01

This is like selling Nvidia at $8, and you're like, "It's all done."

• 1:08:48Matt Farah?

You're still, I mean, look, it's not a bad car, but like, not investment-grade. Nope. Uh, JR G. says, "I run a driving club and typically do lead-follow, rather than publishing a route, since complicated routes are a pain in the ass to map out in Google Maps. Any advice on how to easily publish a route?" Well, you can do a 10, up to a 10-stop route in Google Maps. You can also make a route in Ralista. We just figured this out. We've been using Ralista for road and track for the last three years.

• 1:09:28Matt Farah?

And we've actually been like paying Ralista for their like full suite of services where they give you these very nice graphics and they brand the whole thing as yours, but it's Ralista. We just sort of learned, and it's a great, it's a good, it's a good bit of software, but we just learned that you could pay fifteen dollars for like Ralista Pro and get all, you can do all of that yourself without having the branding or anything, but it's still like fifteen dollars versus like thousands of dollars. And so I would say you could, you could get Ralista Pro and have, or whatever it's Pro or a Plus or whatever it's called, the paid version of the Ralista app and you can make

• 1:10:11Matt Farah?

custom routes for that. It is, it is not difficult. Uh, JD, what is your take on Peter Rollinson stepping down from CEO of Lucid? I, um, I don't have a real take on it. I don't, I, I don't, um, study the, the corporate side of the industry all that much. I don't know what the stock looks like right now.

• 1:10:34Speaker 01

Well, so they had a fourth quarter loss of four hundred million dollars and that contributed to the annual shortfall of two point seven billion.

• 1:10:42Matt Farah?

I would say if you lost two point seven billion dollars, being out of a job shouldn't surprise you. I met Peter once, he was very nice to me, but like, ah.

• 1:10:55Speaker 01

It's a bummer because the cars are good, but they have really struggled to capture market, you know, for some reasons that make sense to me, some that I'm sure are, uh, something maybe a new CEO can take on. It's a complicated business for sure. It's hard to break into it.

• 1:11:10Matt Farah?

But in terms of like making a car that is, you know, pretty, pretty nice for, for a company's first effort, I think they did a nice job.

• 1:11:18Speaker 01

  They did.

• 1:11:19Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:19Speaker 01

But it's, it's a bold, they're trying to step into luxury.

• 1:11:22Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:23Speaker 01

  With no name.

• 1:11:24Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:24Speaker 01

And new technology, which is going to scare some people, of course. Uh, and talk about like if adoption rates of EVs are slow in general, even for ones that cost forty to fifty grand, which is quote, the cheap ones.

• 1:11:35Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:35Speaker 01

  Hundred eighty thousand dollars.

• 1:11:37Matt Farah?

Yeah. 981 RS wants to hear about my routine for drinking coffee in the car, specifically the spider.

• 1:11:46Speaker 01

  Use the mouth, right?

• 1:11:47Matt Farah?

I put it to my lips.

• 1:11:48Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:11:49Matt Farah?

  Lift, tilt, tilt back gently.

• 1:11:51Speaker 01

Oh, you tilt back. That's what I was getting wrong.

• 1:11:54Matt Farah?

I have the Porsche cup holder. The Porsche cup holder works nicely with my Porsche... Excuse me. The Porsche coffee cup, which you buy at the Porsche Design Store, which is in your dealer. I think you can probably get them on their website. It has the locking flip-top lid. I've actually locked it and I've dropped it, and it's like ding ding ding ding ding, and not a drop. So I'm not worried about my interior.

• 1:12:23Speaker 01

The Porsche cup holder is seriously impressive because it holds things tightly. So even though your cup is four times taller than the depth of that cup holder, it locks it in in the canons.

• 1:12:34Matt Farah?

  It does it pretty good.

• 1:12:35Speaker 01

My BMW one is like the fixed circle size, but the things jiggle around.

• 1:12:40Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:40Speaker 01

  It's all about fitment, basically.

• 1:12:42Matt Farah?

The Corvette one was like flat, like this. You just put your cup there, and if you had a .2G corner, it would just slide into your lap. Chris, thoughts on the Nissan Stadia Outek Edition? That is a Skyline wagon. Yeah, I'm pro Skyline wagon. I'm pro R34 nose swap on the Skyline wagon. Yeah, Stagias are awesome. Stadia 260 RS Outek is a literal Skyline wagon, and I recommend them. The nose swap is a big upgrade.

• 1:13:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:13:16Matt Farah?

  The Stadia nose stinks.

• 1:13:22Matt Farah?

  Uh, okay.

• 1:13:28Matt Farah?

  Wait.

• 1:13:31Matt Farah?

Okay, I don't, hmm, let's see. Sorry, I'm reading a bunch of questions and trying to find the best one. Uh, Queen shit of Liesville. Uh, there was only one all-wheel-drive, mid-engine, supercharged vehicle ever made. Uh, do you know what it is?

• 1:13:50Speaker 01

All-wheel drive, mid-engine, supercharged. Not off, no.

• 1:13:54Matt Farah?

  It's Toyota Previa.

• 1:13:56Speaker 01

  Is it really?

• 1:13:56Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah. What are some other notable lone wolf platforms that fit the only-made-one-of-one mentality? Well, you've got your, uh, Chazada Maroder V16.

• 1:14:08Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:14:09Matt Farah?

That's, that's two, two V8s transverse, side by side. Uh, you've got any, all number of twin-charged engines. Twin-charged engines are crazy.

• 1:14:19Speaker 01

  Very rare.

• 1:14:19Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:20Speaker 01

Like Volvo had that, the XC90?

• 1:14:22Matt Farah?

Yeah. My dad's boat had twin-charged Volvo diesels.

• 1:14:25Speaker 01

Remember the, the early Volvo one that we drove? I remember the press car vividly. The tuning was weird.

• 1:14:29Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:30Speaker 01

It was like driving two cars with one foot.

• 1:14:32Matt Farah?

Yeah, the handoff was strange. Um, let's see, you...

• 1:14:37Speaker 01

  The Vector?

• 1:14:38Matt Farah?

Well, yeah. The, the Vector W8 was just, just all kinds of weird. That was an Oldsmobile Toronado, front-wheel-drive powertrain in the back.

• 1:14:47Speaker 01

There's been, oh, no, there's been multiple W12s, right? But there's only been one W16, which is the Veyron.

• 1:14:55Matt Farah?

Yeah, and one, and one W8 for the Volkswagen.

• 1:14:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:59Matt Farah?

The Passat W8 was a really weird engine.

• 1:15:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:15:02Matt Farah?

Yeah. You don't want one of them.

• 1:15:03Speaker 01

  No, you don't.

• 1:15:04Matt Farah?

No. Um, I think, I think Audi's, well, I think that's a good number. Yeah. Uh, let's see.

• 1:15:15Matt Farah?

What is ni-, do we have the second half of Nice Cam's question? Oh, there it was. Okay. Nice Cam says, "For 400 Gs, 750S, knowing it'll lose 100K in a few years, or an F8 Spider, if you knew it would hold its value. I realize the 750S is the better car, but is it worth losing your shirt on?" Listen, the truly rich do not consider depreciation.

• 1:15:40Speaker 01

I was gonna say, it really depends on how much money you have. And if you really have enough... If the equal money doesn't matter, I would rather go 750 because the driving is just, it's that much better.

• 1:15:51Matt Farah?

I, dude, I, I had, this is, I'm not trying to be an elitist dickbag about this. I wouldn't buy either of those cars unless I had enough money that the difference between them didn't matter.

• 1:16:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:03Matt Farah?

You know, like, 100K is like, that's so much money. It's a huge amount of money. More than most people make in a year by some margin. But if you're talking about buying that level of cars, that needs to be not so much money.

• 1:16:17Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:16:18Matt Farah?

Which is like a crazy thing to think about. It's a very small number of people. And like, it's that, your scale is already kind of fucked up if that's where you are. But like, that's where you have to be.

• 1:16:29Speaker 01

That's where we think you should be. Some people do stretch and they finance a used Ferrari at 8% or whatever. And they do it, man. People do it and then they can't drive it. You know, or they buy a Ford GT and they never drive it because they're afraid to, because they're worried about depreciating or something like that. But you shouldn't do that. You'll have more fun and be less stressed if you buy something that costs the less and you can drive the shit out of it.

• 1:16:51Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:54Matt Farah?

Oh yeah, is Mercedes threatening to get better? Yeah, there was a big story that Mercedes finally admitted that big screens are not luxurious. Something we've kind of been saying for a little bit.

• 1:17:04Speaker 01

  Yeah, good.

• 1:17:06Matt Farah?

Good. Hopefully they changed their tune there. Uh, let's see. Oh, Trey Rutledge, something I know about. My dad purchased an 03 Vanquish and I think I've convinced him to send it to Aston to be manual swapped.

• 1:17:21Matt Farah?

Trey then says, "A couple of questions. Will most of the money you spend be seen on the other end when it is sold? And did it take a year due to long shipping times? It being early and Aston offering the service, or is that just how long it should take?" So, I don't know what it's like now because once we did it, I never called them again. So, I do think that most of the money spent will be seen on the other end eventually. Particularly if Aston does it themselves and they have paperwork. That's a real reason to do it. It took a year for all the reasons you mentioned.

• 1:18:05Matt Farah?

It took a year because I sent it by boat and not by airplane because it was a quarter of the price. It took a year because I think mine was like the fourth or fifth car they've ever done. They've done a lot more since then, so I'm sure they've streamlined some bits of it. But honestly, I don't know. I might call Matt Ivanhoe at the Cultivated Collector in the Northeast. He's run a lot of those through his dealership. He might know more about it. Or I might just, honestly, I might just call Aston Martin Works and just ask them. I mean, I'm sure they'll, I'm sure they'll tell you all of those things.

• 1:18:43Matt Farah?

You can look at Bring a Trailer and Cars and Bids Results for manual swab vanquishes. They're there. And I don't know what they're charging these days, but I do think you get a substantial portion of that money back. Makes the car way better, more, most importantly.

• 1:18:59Matt Farah?

Okay, wait. That one from Subaru in the left lane is just like too many words.

• 1:19:05Matt Farah?

Wait, favorite model, oh, modded. Westside Collector Cat Search, favorite modded 86 that you've driven? I drove one with a Rotrex that I really liked.

• 1:19:14Speaker 01

I drove one with a V8 that was insane, but it needed a fuel smell management situation. The whole car was filling with gas fumes, but other than that, that was exciting.

• 1:19:28Matt Farah?

Let's see, last one. Chune Hound, what is the dumbest auto journalist hot take that you see endlessly repeated? Mine is that the new Mini still isn't six feet long. Actually, I disagree with you. I think the new Minis are all too fucking big. I think the R53 Mini, the one from '02 to '06. When that came out, like, that was such a great sized car. And like, I don't know why they kept making it bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger.

• 1:19:57Speaker 01

  Yeah, it looks weird now.

• 1:19:59Matt Farah?

And now all Minis look weird as fuck. And I actually think that was, that was a mistake. I don't think they should have been six feet long, but they should not have gotten as big as they've gotten. The brand is worse off for it.

• 1:20:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:20:12Matt Farah?

Um, I, ninety percent of fucking time, you hear a journalist say that a car understeers at the limit. They're driving wrong.

• 1:20:20Speaker 01

  Very true.

• 1:20:20Matt Farah?

I mean, almost all the time. Well, so many times, people talk about turning off traction control and, and doing things that they're not actually doing.

• 1:20:31Matt Farah?

And, and I've seen, I've, I've just, I don't know about hot takes, but like, I have definitely been in places where I've heard people say things and then me and Jethro make eye contact and we're like, okay, yeah.

• 1:20:46Speaker 01

And sometimes, sometimes like, a car, most cars are engineered to be, to go understeer before oversteer for safety, but

• 1:20:56Matt Farah?

  Right.

• 1:20:57Speaker 01

when it's reported, a lot of times, it's not necessary. Like, you can drive around that very, very, very easily. Like, that really means if you just go way too hot, because you don't know what you're doing and you're going downhill, and the brakes go out, like, it's not gonna, you know, swap around on you. But yeah, it's, it shouldn't make itself known very quickly.

• 1:21:15Matt Farah?

Yeah. Uh, thank you patrons, thank you listeners, that is our program. Don't forget to check out our new merch at thesmogentireshop.com. We got a couple new designs in a bunch of different colors and a bunch of different functions, meaning like t-shirt and hoodie and whatnot. And, uh, the green Notice Canyon is coming in the month of, uh, April. That will be very exciting. We're gonna have a hundred units individually numbered. It's, uh, we can't call it, uh, the one green that everybody knows, so it's called Deep Forest Green.

• 1:21:46Speaker 01

  It looks really good.

• 1:21:47Matt Farah?

But it's very sick, gold hands, gold, uh, gold, um, hour indicators. It's, uh, it's rad and, like I said, individually numbered, hundred units only. We have decided, based on the availability of movements and our desire to make other watches, there will only be two more versions of the Canyon. There's gonna be this green one, um, which if you actually scroll down on Instagram, maybe a couple of weeks, keep going, where me and Teddy Baldassar, there he is, me and Teddy in the middle. If you scroll to the right in that post, there's me and the green Canyon. So we got this one, and then we're gonna have one more after this one that is gonna be the super special fifty units only. It's gonna be a, a bump up.

• 1:22:32Matt Farah?

People have been requesting a special or special one, so we're gonna do that. So that'll be fun.

• 1:22:39Matt Farah?

And of course, you know, episode 1,000 is coming up. It's gonna be a podcasting extravaganza on Sunday, March 30th. It's gonna be a live event. Eight hours of podcasting, lots of guests, it's gonna be fun.

• 1:22:53Speaker 01

Live being live on YouTube, not, we're not having an audience live.

• 1:22:56Matt Farah?

No, live on YouTube, sorry, yes, it will be live on YouTube. And, uh, do we have anything else?

• 1:23:04Speaker 01

We're not doing the thing in Texas, right?

• 1:23:06Matt Farah?

  Not right now.

• 1:23:07Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:23:07Matt Farah?

No, but the Tycon video, I, I, I mean, I guess.

• 1:23:11Speaker 01

  Gangbuster.

• 1:23:12Matt Farah?

It turns out buying, yeah, it turns out, it only, it only cost me $70,000 to make the video.

• 1:23:17Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:23:18Matt Farah?

But it's, the, the Tycon video's doing really well. People have said some really nice things about it, so I'm, I'm happy that, that people are enjoying it. Better that than nobody cared.

• 1:23:27Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:23:27Matt Farah?

I mean, look, this is, this is a, a project that I'm supposed to be committed to for three years. I'm glad people at least like the, the beginning.

• 1:23:34Speaker 01

Yeah. It's good, man, it's real good.

• 1:23:36Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah, it's, it did good numbers and, and, and actually the, the watch time was really long. We had like an 11-minute average watch time, which is, which is long, so that's pretty cool. Thanks, everybody, uh, we will see you next time, bye.
