• 0:15Cameron Hanes?

This is a Keep Hammering Collective with Jody Seer. Hey, we did not plan on doing this.

• 0:20Speaker 01

No, we didn't. Well, here we are.

• 0:22Cameron Hanes?

And for those that don't know, Jody is like one of the best bow hunters I know.

• 0:28Speaker 01

  Well, thank you.

• 0:28Cameron Hanes?

Small town Oregon, grind it out, badass.

• 0:34Speaker 01

I don't know about badass. I'm getting old, Cam.

• 0:36Cameron Hanes?

Wow. You've been doing it a long time. How long you been bow hunting?

• 0:39Speaker 01

  Well, 35 years.

• 0:43Cameron Hanes?

Nice. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah, I started in 89. You must have started right after that.

• 0:49Speaker 01

Probably right in that range. I know I rifle hunted when I was 12 for a year and then have been bow hunting since.

• 0:56Cameron Hanes?

All right. And out of Powers, Oregon.

• 1:02Speaker 01

  Powers, Oregon.

• 1:03Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. You were a football star there.

• 1:06Speaker 01

  Played football, yep.

• 1:08Cameron Hanes?

No, but then you wouldn't played at Southern Oregon, right? Yeah. Yeah. So, I mean, had to be good.

• 1:14Speaker 01

Yeah, that's fair. I mean, you know, the pool's pretty small in those kind of towns.

• 1:18Cameron Hanes?

Well, in those towns, but not at Southern Oregon. There were some studs that came through there.

• 1:22Speaker 01

Yeah, there's, there's a lot of good players.

• 1:24Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:25Speaker 01

It's actually amazing watching it now, working in the school systems for the past, you know, 23 years or whatever it's been and coaching all that time. Kids are good now.

• 1:35Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:36Speaker 01

  It's amazing.

• 1:37Cameron Hanes?

Really? Are they better than back in the day?

• 1:41Speaker 01

  I think they're better athletes. I don't think they're as good fundamentally.

• 1:44Cameron Hanes?

  What about tougher?

• 1:44Speaker 01

  Not even close.

• 1:47Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. Um, yeah. So, yeah, Powers and then that's, so I've been going down there. We shared a hunt, well, a couple hunts, but we killed the Ranch Bowl down there. In 2010 together.

• 2:01Speaker 01

  Was that when that was?

• 2:02Cameron Hanes?

  I think it was.

• 2:03Speaker 01

  Geez.

• 2:04Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, so.

• 2:04Speaker 01

15 years ago. Do you remember how that all came about?

• 2:08Cameron Hanes?

Uh, let's see. Well, I think you told me there's this giant bull. Or you tell, tell me your.

• 2:15Speaker 01

  I mean.

• 2:16Cameron Hanes?

All I, all I know is I think you said there's this giant Roosevelt and I think you could probably get the opportunity to hunt it.

• 2:23Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 2:23Cameron Hanes?

Is that, is that what it was?

• 2:24Speaker 01

That was kind of it. And then, uh, one of the, the guys I knew in Powers had, uh, access to that place and was starting a guide service.

• 2:32Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, Ron.

• 2:33Speaker 01

Yeah. And I, I don't think I was Ron's favorite person around that time. Cause I kind of used to hunt out there. Um, and I went to Ron and I said, uh, hey, I could get Cam down here to hunt this bull and it would blow your guide business up. And he was like, no. Hmm. Okay. What? And he's like, no, we're not gonna do any archery hunts.

• 2:59Cameron Hanes?

  Hmm.

• 2:59Speaker 01

Cause it was, I think it was initially, it was just gonna be a rifle thing.

• 3:04Cameron Hanes?

  Right.

• 3:04Speaker 01

I said, Ron, you don't get it.

• 3:06Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 3:07Speaker 01

I think you should have this dude down here. And he finally came around and agreed to it. And then, uh, it was you and I and Kevin, wasn't it?

• 3:14Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 3:14Speaker 01

  And went down and, uh.

• 3:17Cameron Hanes?

So tell me about the ranch bull first, or did you know about the bull?

• 3:20Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 3:21Cameron Hanes?

  Okay, yeah.

• 3:22Speaker 01

That bull had been there for, oh, probably, I was probably aware of that bull for like five years before that. Um, and how I became aware of that bull, obviously I grew up there. Um, but there was a bunch of wild pigs.

• 3:38Cameron Hanes?

  Hmm.

• 3:38Speaker 01

  Running around.

• 3:39Cameron Hanes?

  Really? I didn't know that.

• 3:41Speaker 01

And I think at that time,

• 3:45Speaker 01

was I the principal there at that time?

• 3:47Cameron Hanes?

  I thought so.

• 3:48Speaker 01

  I think I was.

• 3:49Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 3:50Speaker 01

So, um, after work, I probably spent like 50 evenings in a row trying to kill those pigs. And, uh, I spent every single day out in the woods. It was before I had kids.

• 4:03Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 4:04Speaker 01

Um, and I, I ended up killing a couple of them, but I, I constantly just watched that ranch bull.

• 4:10Cameron Hanes?

  Oh.

• 4:11Speaker 01

  And, uh, and I think.

• 4:14Speaker 01

I think the year before you killed him, I picked up his shed or either the year after. I don't remember the sequence of how that went, but um.

• 4:22Cameron Hanes?

Cause Ron said you could hunt sheds there.

• 4:24Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 4:25Cameron Hanes?

  You know, go pick up.

• 4:25Speaker 01

Well, no, Ron didn't say I could hunt sheds there. The ranch manager said I could hunt sheds there.

• 4:32Cameron Hanes?

  Okay, okay.

• 4:33Speaker 01

Um, and that was a little point of contention for a while.

• 4:36Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 4:36Speaker 01

But uh, yeah, it all worked out. I, I got to spend a lot of time on that place for a lot of years and uh,

• 4:44Speaker 01

it was, it was mind blowing to me to go after pigs out there. That was super cool.

• 4:48Cameron Hanes?

Oh, I bet. Cause we, I didn't know if there was pigs there. I've never seen one.

• 4:51Speaker 01

  I don't think there's many around anymore. I don't.

• 4:54Cameron Hanes?

The fallow deer are still like down on that Gaylord.

• 4:57Speaker 01

  Yep, yep.

• 4:57Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 4:58Speaker 01

It's like a game park down there in places. It's very interesting. Um, but I, we had, we used to go to California all the time to hunt pigs.

• 5:07Cameron Hanes?

  Mm hmm.

• 5:08Speaker 01

Um, cause it was cheap and we could drive there and um, somehow they ended up in there.

• 5:13Cameron Hanes?

  Oh, gotcha.

• 5:14Speaker 01

There's some theories on how they ended up in there, but they did. So I, I thought, heck man, I'm gonna hunt the heck out of these things.

• 5:20Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, you can hunt every day.

• 5:21Speaker 01

They would go between um, dementes and hours of the time. And then uh, I think even over into the Eckley stuff that you would access through Bob Bent. And heck, we, I piled them up in there for a couple of years. It was fun.

• 5:37Cameron Hanes?

And so you would, you would see, so tell me how it got the name, the Ranch Bowl.

• 5:42Speaker 01

I think that thing just, well, I mean, it was the king of that ranch for years.

• 5:46Cameron Hanes?

Cause people think, oh, Ranch Bowl, like it's like on some high fence ranch or something like that. It's like, no.

• 5:52Speaker 01

Well, that's the furthest thing you could ever get from a high fence ranch.

• 5:56Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 5:57Speaker 01

I don't know the exact acreage of it. Eighteen thousand acres or something crazy. But it's just reprod and timber and super steep and super thick and you're gonna work your guts out to kill bulls there. I used to try to call bulls off there all the time.

• 6:13Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 6:14Speaker 01

Which I was pretty successful at actually. But that bull, he was scared of nothing. You remember the first time we heard that thing?

• 6:24Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, I know. Frick, it's almost like you want to get behind a tree and be like, protect yourself.

• 6:31Speaker 01

  You're scared, yeah.

• 6:32Cameron Hanes?

Well, you got video of him in the road, didn't you? It the before I killed him. Remember when he's in that road?

• 6:39Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 6:39Cameron Hanes?

And you just like, like a fighting bull?

• 6:42Speaker 01

Oh, yeah, yeah. He, he feared nothing. And the crazy thing is there were some giant bulls around. I mean, that same year, Warnock, Warnock killed that great big bull on a governor's tag.

• 6:54Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 6:56Speaker 01

I think those bulls were smart enough to avoid each other. But man, that ranch bull, he, he let nothing around him. Super smart bull. Uh, yeah, I, I felt like we got kind of lucky when we got him.

• 7:12Cameron Hanes?

We did, you know, uh, so that, that hunt, okay, so you've got 18,000 or whatever, however many thousand acres, you're going after one animal. Not the greatest odds. I mean, bull can be a lot of different places, a lot of thick timber, a lot of reprod, which you can never even see in. But we sort of, I don't know if we had a system, but we were kind of eliminating places. But then I think you kind of knew where he'd like to hang out. Murphy was, was one of those. Murphy Canyon was one of those places. But, you know, Demence is another property that's there that we don't have permission on.

• 7:52Speaker 01

  Correct.

• 7:52Cameron Hanes?

And so you might have 18,000 acres. He goes over one cattle fence, you're not hunting them.

• 7:57Speaker 01

And, and when we were on him that day, he was literally, what, 400 yards from the line?

• 8:04Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah. But, uh, I remember that was about, we had been after him for a while. I mean, maybe. Um, five days.

• 8:15Cameron Hanes?

And I remember it was the middle of the day, kind of like maybe around noon or something like that. And we were just chilling in Murphy, just kind of laying around, wondering where the elk are. Heard a bugle.

• 8:30Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 8:31Cameron Hanes?

And we're like, was that the ranch bull?

• 8:34Speaker 01

  Sure was.

• 8:35Cameron Hanes?

Sounded like the ranch bull, cause he had this like just aggressive.

• 8:39Speaker 01

  Super growly.

• 8:41Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, and he was by this time, so you knew of him for years, but by this time, I think we're thinking he was 12 or 13 years old.

• 8:48Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, did you ever have him aged?

• 8:52Cameron Hanes?

  No.

• 8:52Speaker 01

  No.

• 8:53Cameron Hanes?

I remember his body was pretty.

• 8:55Speaker 01

  Giant, giant.

• 8:56Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 8:58Speaker 01

Yeah, like there's very few elk you would ever see that are that size. And I mean, you've hunted Roosevelt a ton, I've hunted them a ton, I've probably seen two bulls in my life that are similar to him. And he would just thrash other bulls. I've watched him in spotting scopes a hundred different times. Just destroying anything that came near him. And what was, I knew we could kill him because he had never been hunted with a bow.

• 9:26Cameron Hanes?

  Oh, okay.

• 9:27Speaker 01

  You know what I mean?

• 9:28Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 9:28Speaker 01

They were always rifle hunting him, he'd left the herd, you know, I knew if we could get after him.

• 9:34Cameron Hanes?

  During the rut.

• 9:35Speaker 01

He was running, he was in big trouble.

• 9:36Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah. And it still took us, and like, if I think back to that day, God, what a, what a roller coaster. But me, you and Kevin, so I've had Kevin on here before and people.

• 9:49Speaker 01

  I listened to that.

• 9:50Cameron Hanes?

People have seen him, you know, because we've been elk hunting, he's been helping Ron down there, guide these bow hunters now. And uh, so me, you and him, I think we had a big plan. I think you were filming, Kevin was calling.

• 10:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:04Cameron Hanes?

  And I was shooting.

• 10:05Speaker 01

Yep. So we had this, we're in this little strip of meadow, timber on the edge.

• 10:11Cameron Hanes?

We thought, man, it'd be sick if he came out into the sun here.

• 10:14Speaker 01

  Correct.

• 10:14Cameron Hanes?

  Good video.

• 10:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:16Cameron Hanes?

And we could whack him right here, kind of tight little opening, but a bull like that, he's not gonna be coming out in the open.

• 10:23Speaker 01

  Nope.

• 10:24Cameron Hanes?

So he, I think he, we heard him coming in and the wind was okay. But he stayed hugging in that tree, in the tree line. And I could tell. And I'm sure we all could tell he's not coming out.

• 10:38Speaker 01

  Correct.

• 10:38Cameron Hanes?

And so I saw flashes of just hide kind of back, little bit of little holes and then pretty thick timber right there. But then he stopped and there's a hole and I had hide and I'm like, think that's a shoulder right there? Thirty seven yards? And it was a ranch bull. We'd been out, you know, so boom, hit him. Didn't know exactly where, like I said, I thought I had the shoulder there and I don't know if I did have the shoulder and made a poor shot, but point is I hit high and back on that first one, I believe. And so we were like not knowing, thinking he took off and I just remember how what this is like is like

• 11:21Cameron Hanes?

not some depending on where the bull is, you can't hear them for a long time.

• 11:25Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 11:25Cameron Hanes?

So we heard him bust off and then quiet. So of course, what were we thinking?

• 11:31Speaker 01

We're super pumped. I mean, you're never pumped until you put your hands on those things. Cause those, you know, big, mature Roosevelt's are not typical elk. They have a will to live that surpasses anything that I've ever hunted. And so you're always kind of nervous. I felt good because you're very effective with your bow. And, and I did, you felt like it was a pretty good shot.

• 11:57Cameron Hanes?

I thought it was at that time.

• 11:59Speaker 01

So we kind of all got back together and we're like, yes. And about that time.

• 12:04Cameron Hanes?

No, no, no, no. It was that came later. But first, so we're like, let's give him some time because I wasn't, I was hopeful, but not a hundred percent sure. So we walked out, Ron, somehow we got a hold of Ron. He went and got us burgers. You remember? So we're like, let's give it a couple of hours. I think we waited till two. And so we, we were like, ate the burgers and I'm like, okay, two, let's sneak up in there and hopefully he's dead right there.

• 12:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:31Cameron Hanes?

And we, the ranch bull was like, I mean, I don't know. I've killed, how many bulls have you killed?

• 12:38Speaker 01

Oh, man. Chase asked me that the other day. Somewhere in the forties.

• 12:42Cameron Hanes?

  Forties.

• 12:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:43Cameron Hanes?

So it's, but to me, you can speak to it. It's never easy and it's never guaranteed. It's like, as you said, until you hold them, you don't know, but you want to be confident.

• 12:57Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 12:58Cameron Hanes?

So we're like, let's get in there, find blood and.

• 13:03Cameron Hanes?

If he's right there, man, this is a great day. So we get back in there and I think we're in that timber and it's not, not finding like a ton of blood.

• 13:16Cameron Hanes?

And we heard a kind of a bugle and we're like looking at each other. It's like, I was, I was on a ranch bull, was it?

• 13:25Speaker 01

Probably like a couple hundred yards above us.

• 13:27Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 13:28Speaker 01

  Which is what exactly where.

• 13:30Cameron Hanes?

Where he went. And we're like, it sounded, but that first one wasn't like you said, when you heard the bugle, you're like, there's no doubt. That one didn't sound like it. And we're like, ah, no, there's no way.

• 13:42Speaker 01

We thought it was probably a satellite.

• 13:44Cameron Hanes?

Right. And then he ripped off a ranch bull bugle and we're like, oh my God, that fucker's still bugling like the ranch bull?

• 13:56Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 13:57Cameron Hanes?

  Where did I hit him?

• 13:58Speaker 01

  And we knew right?

• 13:58Cameron Hanes?

What? Yeah, we knew it was him. He was alive.

• 14:01Speaker 01

Do you remember, I shouldn't say the best part about this, probably the most tense part about this, because Ron was with us then.

• 14:12Cameron Hanes?

  Was he?

• 14:13Speaker 01

  I believe so.

• 14:14Cameron Hanes?

  On that trail?

• 14:15Speaker 01

I think he did come in there with us because I remember thinking, oh geez.

• 14:20Cameron Hanes?

  I don't think he was.

• 14:21Speaker 01

  You don't think so?

• 14:22Cameron Hanes?

No, because what I remember is there was a clip I had where the camera was set up and we had it recording or.

• 14:28Speaker 01

  When you came back down.

• 14:29Cameron Hanes?

Came back. Yeah. But he wasn't there.

• 14:30Speaker 01

  No, he wasn't there then.

• 14:32Cameron Hanes?

  Okay. But before that?

• 14:34Speaker 01

I thought, or maybe, maybe I'm wrong.

• 14:37Cameron Hanes?

  Anyway, go ahead. Well.

• 14:38Speaker 01

No, I was just gonna say, I remember him, his face just being like, are you kidding me?

• 14:44Cameron Hanes?

Oh, and that, when he bugled?

• 14:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 14:46Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 14:46Speaker 01

Yeah. And we were all like, you know, it's the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. And you go there that fast.

• 14:53Cameron Hanes?

  If a bull is bugling.

• 14:55Speaker 01

  He's okay.

• 14:56Cameron Hanes?

He's not going to be dying anytime soon. So I like, which I've said many times over my bounty career, unfortunately, but I think I said.

• 15:08Cameron Hanes?

Let me go clean this mess up.

• 15:10Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 15:10Cameron Hanes?

And I'm like, took off my boots.

• 15:14Cameron Hanes?

  Said, I'll be back.

• 15:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 15:17Cameron Hanes?

And I didn't know what, what was gonna happen, but snuck, snuck up that elk trail up. There's a skid road that came in and then there was this old barbed wire fence up there. But I sneak up and I don't know if he bugled again, maybe he did give me a look, but I knew kind of, kind of where he bugled from. And I, I remember seeing there's, there's some cows in there. And so I'm like, God, I can't, I don't want to spook any of them. So I'm taking my time and I get up to the skid road up on top of the ridge and I pop out and I look around like this and I look and there's the ranch bull and he's looking back at me and I'm just like, I go back and I'm like, oh my God, okay. He's like 25 yards away, quartering away.

• 16:03Cameron Hanes?

Full draw, lean back out, right, hit him back here. He takes off and I hear that, that fence like squeak and stuff. So I'm like, oh, he hit the fence. I run up there and that, that arrow actually did something to him, the quartering away one. And then I hit him again, like in the, I mean, it sounds terrible now, but in the back leg, but he was like moving off through the meadow and I went up over the ridge and then he was down there and I think I shot him again, just, just to make sure. And then came back and, uh, do you remember what I said on that video?

• 16:41Speaker 01

Ranch bull's dead, kids. Or something.

• 16:45Cameron Hanes?

That was it. And we were just like so pumped.

• 16:48Speaker 01

  Oh, man.

• 16:49Cameron Hanes?

  So pumped.

• 16:50Speaker 01

You know, and, and truth is Kim, that was, uh, you know, that was before big Roosevelt started getting killed.

• 16:57Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 16:57Speaker 01

  I mean,

• 16:58Cameron Hanes?

  It seemed like it.

• 16:59Speaker 01

A 300 class Roosevelt 15 years ago was very few and far.

• 17:03Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 17:03Speaker 01

I mean, I, I don't think I had even seen one in that country. That's what was so cool about that bull is we were like, dude, this thing is huge.

• 17:12Cameron Hanes?

Well, and so just for people for reference, everybody knows a Boone and Crockett animal is a giant animal.

• 17:19Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 17:20Cameron Hanes?

And a Boone and Crockett, so how it works is Pope and Young for Roosevelt is down to 35, 240, something like that.

• 17:29Speaker 01

I think at that time it was two twenty.

• 17:30Cameron Hanes?

Two twenty five, okay. So then a a Boone and Crockett Roosevelt, which is generally for rifle hunting. A Boone and Crockett Roosevelt is two ninety.

• 17:40Speaker 01

  Was it at that time?

• 17:41Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, was it now?

• 17:42Speaker 01

Well, I thought it was two seventy five.

• 17:44Cameron Hanes?

  Oh.

• 17:45Speaker 01

And I could be very wrong.

• 17:46Cameron Hanes?

It's two ninety, but anyway, to get something with your bow over Boone and Crockett threshold over two ninety and then to three hundred. That's giant.

• 17:56Speaker 01

What does that finish out at?

• 17:57Cameron Hanes?

It's like three hundred, three. I think like, is it three oh one or something like that?

• 18:04Speaker 01

  But it was big.

• 18:05Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, three oh two or three maybe, but yeah, for us, it was the biggest thing we'd ever seen for Roosevelt.

• 18:12Speaker 01

Honestly, had never seen one bigger at that time.

• 18:14Cameron Hanes?

  I hadn't either.

• 18:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:15Cameron Hanes?

No, for sure. There's these guys here, the Dunsons, who used to have the world record of the number four bull. And I remember they were, it was three sixteen and three twelve, and I had seen mounts of those up in Markawa. And the, I think the three sixteen was the world record, the three twelve was number four, and Rob, Robert Dunson killed the three sixteen. And to me, I thought, well, that's a world record. You're never killing one.

• 18:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:42Cameron Hanes?

Probably even close, let alone, for sure not over, but probably not even close. So to kill a three hundred was like, that's knocking on the, you know, at that time, that's huge.

• 18:54Speaker 01

Yeah, I I mean. I felt like we were probably the greatest elk hunting crew in the world at that time.

• 19:01Cameron Hanes?

I felt like it. We were, we were on on a high.

• 19:05Speaker 01

  For sure.

• 19:06Cameron Hanes?

I mean, I felt like you could have thrown us three in anywhere. We will get some, we'll get, oh, you got, you heard of a big bull? Where?

• 19:15Speaker 01

  Let's do it.

• 19:16Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, but.

• 19:17Speaker 01

I still feel that way, Cam.

• 19:19Cameron Hanes?

So do I, but we were supposed to be humble.

• 19:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 19:23Cameron Hanes?

But no, that was so, I mean, I wanted to, I wanted to, you know, you said you're gonna bring me up a bow to look at and I'm glad you did, but I wanted to talk to you about elk hunting too, because that, I think that bull and that experience definitely was one of the most special of my life. To be after such a special animal with such, with people, you and Kevin, who have had so much success and people talk all the time about, oh, is it public, is it private, is this, how many, whatever. All I say is if somebody's killed more than 20 bulls on public land, listen to whatever they say. Well, I don't care, I don't care what they say or how they did it, but they know something. So both you and Kevin have

• 20:07Cameron Hanes?

killed more than 20 bulls on public land. And I felt like us hunting together, it was so special, just from Oregon, got it done so many times.

• 20:19Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 20:20Cameron Hanes?

  I don't know.

• 20:21Speaker 01

It, it was special for me, for sure. Just, you know, obviously hunting with you and bringing Kevin into that mix. Uh, cause Kevin and I's whole relationship was built around hunting. I mean, hell, we met in a thunderstorm on Dixie Mountain. We, we didn't even know each other were there.

• 20:37Cameron Hanes?

Out of John Day or where?

• 20:39Speaker 01

Out of John Day, yeah, up on Dixie. And I was hunting this big, long ridge by myself and this lightning storm came in and it scared the hell out of me, to be honest with you. It was just pounding around me. So I took my bow and went and put it under a tree off over there. And then I went and hit, I was like, that tree's never been struck by lightning, so I'll be fine there. Everyone else was torched. So I went and got under that tree and then that storm finally passed after about 15 minutes and I came wandering back out to get my bow and there's Kevin.

• 21:09Cameron Hanes?

  Really?

• 21:10Speaker 01

  Like, that was crazy.

• 21:13Speaker 01

So we became, we became great friends after that and had hunted all over, but, uh, super good elk hunter.

• 21:19Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah. Well, so were you. And, yeah, I mean, like I said, if you've killed, now you've killed 40 bulls.

• 21:26Speaker 01

  Somewhere in that range, yeah.

• 21:27Cameron Hanes?

That's insane, dude. That's a lot of bull.

• 21:30Speaker 01

Now, now we're getting into hunting with kids.

• 21:32Cameron Hanes?

  I know.

• 21:33Speaker 01

  Just the ball, man.

• 21:34Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 21:34Speaker 01

  Super cool.

• 21:35Cameron Hanes?

But don't you think like, when I always talk about, when I think of small town Oregon. And I I've said it on here before and you know, a lot of different type of people listen to this. Not all small town Oregon type people, but to us, or how I grew up, you can speak to it yourself. But the guys who killed bulls, well, I didn't know anybody who really killed a bull with a bow at that time when I came up. But if you could kill a big buck or a bull, I don't care how you were like legend. I mean, that's who that's who the kids wanted to be like, oh, did you hear this guy got this giant black tail? Or this guy got killed a bull.

• 22:14Cameron Hanes?

It's like where we grew up, being an elk hunter, or even if you kill a good bull with a bow rifle, that meant something.

• 22:23Speaker 01

  Totally. Still does to me.

• 22:25Cameron Hanes?

It still does to me too, but it's like, no, that meant not just something, that meant everything.

• 22:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:30Cameron Hanes?

  I didn't give a about anything else.

• 22:33Speaker 01

  No.

• 22:34Cameron Hanes?

At first, before I had a, uh, wrote or mean elk, it was a big black tail. That was just like all I cared about giant black tail. Well, maybe not even giant, just like chasing, just like a big four by.

• 22:47Speaker 01

  They were giant tests then.

• 22:48Cameron Hanes?

To us, yeah. And then started, I killed that bull in eighty nine, that spike bull, got the tag over there. And then it was just like, God, could you imagine if you killed a six by six bull with your bow? So then that was like obsession, but uh, the, the point was, it's like to us in small town where we grew up. That's all there was.

• 23:10Speaker 01

There was nothing else. And I felt like I've, I'm a pretty analytical person as time has gone on. And like, I always think about what separates good hunters from average hunters or, you know, weekend casual hunters. And it's, it's a really interesting thought because I've always thought every good hunter I know is crazy competitive. Like generally a past athlete, they're just vicious in life in general.

• 23:45Speaker 01

But the biggest key that I've seen, I think, is they all grew up in that environment. They grew up killing things. They grew up watching animal behavior. They, you're, you're always in the mix of it. And, uh, and I don't think you learn that stuff overnight. And you might not even know you're learning it at that time.

• 24:05Cameron Hanes?

  Mm hmm.

• 24:06Speaker 01

But, but you're taking it all in.

• 24:08Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 24:09Speaker 01

I've hunted with a million people and I'm like, why didn't you move?

• 24:12Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 24:13Speaker 01

And they're like, I didn't know I could. It was rubbing a tree, you know, or whatever the situation was.

• 24:18Cameron Hanes?

They don't understand. A million little things. Yeah. Yeah. It's, uh, and I've taken a lot of people out too, and newer hunters and stuff like that. And it's just like, you forget how much you know until you take somebody who doesn't know anything. And then you're like explaining, it's like, you can't, you can't step on that. You can't, you know, do you hear your pants?

• 24:38Speaker 01

Or. That's one of my favorite stories of yours.

• 24:41Cameron Hanes?

You hear my pants doing that? Oh, well, James just heard that this, this, uh, that was another cameraman. But yeah, James just heard that, like, first person experience on, in Utah this year.

• 24:55Speaker 01

  Lucky you, James.

• 24:56Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. Um, but, uh, you know what else? So you talk about all the good hunters you've met have all been that small town. Kind of maybe learned, didn't realize they're learning just to this experience. You know what else I've, because I, I think about this shit a lot too. And people don't talk about this or I haven't heard it, but the best hunters I know are smart. Like, and hunters usually aren't hunters and smart usually are like oil and water. It's just like, what, why? No, you're, he's a hunter, but I thought you said he was smart. How does that happen? No, but like, when I think of Roy, when I think of, you know, you, Kevin, it's like,

• 25:38Cameron Hanes?

or if I'm with anybody who's, who's got it done, they are smart. Because you gotta look at, you gotta look at the situation. You look at the, the factors that weigh in. You're making decisions based on that. You're making assumptions based on that. And it all has to like work to get within bow range and. You're looking at the weather, you're looking at the wind, like, you know, we had this time, you know, you're out, the wind's this way, but then, you know, a dark cloud comes over, it changes the wind for a second, or a plane comes over and you're like, I'm gonna use that sound to close in on this. So it's all these little things that like weigh in on these decisions

• 26:20Cameron Hanes?

you're making, and you have to be, I don't know, I don't know how to explain it other than you have to, I mean, you have to be smart about what you're doing.

• 26:30Speaker 01

  If you're gonna be consistently.

• 26:31Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah, you can get lucky.

• 26:33Speaker 01

  Yeah, absolutely.

• 26:34Cameron Hanes?

You can get lucky, but, and I, I think that kinda gets missed because hunters aren't generally thought about, you know, being intelligent, but the guys I know.

• 26:47Speaker 01

  Pretty good dudes.

• 26:48Cameron Hanes?

  They can put shit together.

• 26:49Speaker 01

I've always looked at the woods, and I, I talk to my son about this all the time, or people, you know, we hunt with, um, the woods have just been a big giant puzzle to me my whole life, and, and you, you find pieces that go together. Now, you're never gonna piece all the puzzle together, but you get a pretty good picture of what's going on when you've been through it so many times, and you're observant.

• 27:13Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 27:13Speaker 01

Um, many people go into the woods for fun, and maybe they're serious hunters, but they're not connecting dots.

• 27:19Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 27:20Speaker 01

And, once you start connecting those dots, elk hunting's very easy.

• 27:25Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, I mean, there's a lot of tendencies.

• 27:27Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 27:27Cameron Hanes?

That you, you can, yeah, I mean, it's just gonna affect decisions you make, and then when the animal, the animals haven't really changed much.

• 27:36Speaker 01

  Probably at all.

• 27:37Cameron Hanes?

They're gonna be about the same forever.

• 27:40Speaker 01

  Correct.

• 27:41Cameron Hanes?

And, um, so we can change, we can learn, we can adapt, if you do it right.

• 27:46Speaker 01

And if you wanna be good.

• 27:47Cameron Hanes?

And then you max, then you take advantage of the chinks in their armor, or where they make mistakes.

• 27:53Speaker 01

And I've probably learned more about elk behavior out of elk season than, than even during the season. I remember I used to go spook elk just to see where they went, because I knew they were gonna get spooked.

• 28:07Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 28:08Speaker 01

Soon as hunting season came around.

• 28:09Cameron Hanes?

  Right.

• 28:10Speaker 01

And then I'd go wait where they're gonna be spooked, or whatever the case may be.

• 28:13Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 28:13Speaker 01

But, uh, or using different calls, and people are using different sounds, different sequences, different, you know, pace and rhythms, and, um, just always tried to really stay ahead of what people were doing, so it worked.

• 28:25Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. Well, any animal that gets hunted gets used to being pressured from, you know, humans are are pretty predictable, you know, so an animal's gonna pick up on that for sure. I mean, I even noticed that like, if you're looking at a logging unit, like we're here in logging country, and you look at this unit, everybody pulls up to this landing, everybody looks at this same way, but you know as well as I do, there's folds in that country. Those bucks know where they can be seen, where they can't be seen. So if you walk over down a ridge where you can get a different angle on it, there's, might be a giant buck right there.

• 29:05Speaker 01

And, and very rarely can you see everything.

• 29:08Cameron Hanes?

  Oh, yeah.

• 29:09Speaker 01

  From one place.

• 29:10Cameron Hanes?

Right, but people, they, I mean, they want easy.

• 29:14Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 29:15Cameron Hanes?

So they're not walking 300 yards down a spine ridge.

• 29:18Speaker 01

  No.

• 29:19Cameron Hanes?

  In repod.

• 29:19Speaker 01

No, and most people can make it pretty easy with a gun.

• 29:22Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 29:22Speaker 01

Especially in that country, you can go glass up deer and

• 29:25Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 29:25Speaker 01

take one or whatever. Elk's a little different.

• 29:27Cameron Hanes?

  Mm-hmm.

• 29:27Speaker 01

I mean, I've always said rifle elk hunting in that country, you have about five minutes of a plan and then it all goes to hell.

• 29:34Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 29:35Speaker 01

  And you're just getting lucky.

• 29:36Cameron Hanes?

  For sure.

• 29:36Speaker 01

  For that.

• 29:37Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. What, uh, like, so you said, you think about what makes a good hunter, but what's, what's led to your success? Do you think just that time in the woods and just, just being comfortable out there?

• 29:49Speaker 01

I think much like you, Cam, I didn't give a about anything else for a long, long time of my life.

• 29:56Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 29:57Speaker 01

Um, if I was doing it, it was to get better at elk hunting.

• 30:01Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 30:02Speaker 01

  Plain and simple.

• 30:02Cameron Hanes?

  Right.

• 30:03Speaker 01

My weekends consisted of being in the woods or going and meeting up with buddies to go check out new areas or, um, I lived it. And, and when you do that, you sacrifice a lot of other things in life.

• 30:16Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 30:16Speaker 01

But you get pretty good at elk hunting.

• 30:18Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, I've, I've screwed up a lot of, a lot of other things, but not elk hunting.

• 30:24Speaker 01

  Nope.

• 30:24Cameron Hanes?

I still look at like, what I do to just chase this elk hunting dream every year and I'm just like, God, I'm gonna probably look back and regret how much time and money I maybe I've spent. I doesn't feel like I'm going to, but maybe.

• 30:41Cameron Hanes?

To me, like you, I don't care about anything else. So I don't know what I'd regret it for.

• 30:47Speaker 01

No, you know, I mean, I'll never regret anything. I'll regret not going on a trip.

• 30:55Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 30:55Speaker 01

And, uh, yeah, but you, you know, you, life has different phases, you know, like raising kids. That takes a ton of time.

• 31:04Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 31:04Speaker 01

Marriage, um, just making things right. And, but I've never put hunting on the back burner. I think my wife could agree to that now. Um, when it's hunting season, like I don't do anything until I kill an elk.

• 31:19Cameron Hanes?

  Right.

• 31:19Speaker 01

  That's it.

• 31:20Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 31:21Speaker 01

  And I never will.

• 31:24Cameron Hanes?

I love it. Yeah. I just don't think, you know, social media is kind of weird. I, there's a lot of people who want to. I mean, we're so lucky, so lucky to grow up the way we did. And maybe at the time, I always say, when I was growing up, I didn't feel lucky. I was just like,

• 31:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:41Cameron Hanes?

Whatever. It's like it, but now looking back, I see all these guys who want to be elk hunters or have a dream of killing a bull or wanting these opportunities like that we've chased. And they're like, starting, you know, 30 years later than we did. And I'm like,

• 31:58Speaker 01

  And you'll never catch up?

• 31:59Cameron Hanes?

It'd, it'd be so hard to learn from ground zero right now.

• 32:03Speaker 01

You know, and I think a difference now in when we started, like I could go back to when I started hunting elk and I literally knew nothing. Nothing. I remember a dude in our town, probably the only archery hunter, and I idolized him. He actually gave me my first bow.

• 32:20Cameron Hanes?

See, I'm telling you. That's what, that's, that's the kind of guys that we look up to.

• 32:24Speaker 01

But I remember he came home one day and he was my neighbor. And he, uh, his kid was like a year or two older than me. And he's like, hey, my dad shot an elk today. And, uh, I walked over there and his son, who had hunted with him a bunch. So I thought he knew a ton about elk hunting. Grabbed the arrow and like smelled it. And he was like, that's a giant bull.

• 32:47Cameron Hanes?

  Geez.

• 32:48Speaker 01

I was like, holy cow, these guys are brilliant.

• 32:53Speaker 01

Turns out it was a cow.

• 32:56Speaker 01

But at that time it sounded good.

• 32:58Cameron Hanes?

I was like, holy freaking legend.

• 32:59Speaker 01

  Know everything.

• 33:00Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 33:02Speaker 01

But yeah, it's a, you can learn a lot.

• 33:04Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 33:07Cameron Hanes?

I was, I was looking at this today, like, so.

• 33:10Speaker 01

  That's what it was.

• 33:11Cameron Hanes?

One of, yeah, one of my buddies gave me this. And so we talk about, like, we didn't know anything, but also equipment, dude. Today, I don't know, I don't know how we killed anything really, but this is exactly kind of what I shot right here, but not with the feathers, but a 2314 with a thunderhead. You see that 125 on there?

• 33:30Speaker 01

  Thunderheads.

• 33:31Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 33:31Speaker 01

And I definitely used these big arrows.

• 33:34Cameron Hanes?

  Way too light.

• 33:35Speaker 01

  Oh, my word.

• 33:36Cameron Hanes?

I mean, that is the worst. This weighs like, it feels like it weighs 200 grains.

• 33:42Speaker 01

But I bet it's not 300 with the broadhead on it.

• 33:46Cameron Hanes?

It feels so light. And this is what we used. So our bows sounded like a 22 going off.

• 33:51Speaker 01

Yeah. And they were louder anyway.

• 33:53Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, louder anyway. And then, so they sound like a 22, but also went slow as hell. So you're not even gaining any, anything really, but this is what we had to get it done with. Which nowadays, like, I shoot, I don't know what you shoot, you can tell me, but like a 491 grain arrow with, I shoot, well, I've been shooting Grim Raper, so it's like 2, 2.75 inches of cut, which that's a big hole to try to push through an elk, but if you shoot heavy poundage with a heavy arrow.

• 34:25Speaker 01

  Heavy arrow.

• 34:25Cameron Hanes?

It works, right? Um, what are you shooting?

• 34:28Speaker 01

I shoot those VAPs. They're heavy, uh, with some added weight to the front.

• 34:33Cameron Hanes?

How heavy is it total? Do you know?

• 34:34Speaker 01

  480, I believe.

• 34:35Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, that hits hard.

• 34:36Speaker 01

Yep. And I went to an 80 pound bow just for that, because I'm always calling elk by myself.

• 34:41Cameron Hanes?

  Oh, so frontals. Yeah.

• 34:43Speaker 01

I wanted to make sure I can get through.

• 34:45Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah. And, uh, yeah, that's, that's, uh, I mean, the drawback to by yourself. Those bulls are coming right to you. So if you can't make that frontal shot, if you, a light arrow might not get through there, might, but a heavy arrow has a lot better chance. Yeah. And so you probably shoot a fixed blade head then.

• 35:05Speaker 01

  I do.

• 35:05Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 35:06Speaker 01

  Yeah, I've shot those VPA.

• 35:10Speaker 01

No welded broadheads. They're much like the Montex were.

• 35:12Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 35:13Speaker 01

  But just a solid piece.

• 35:15Cameron Hanes?

And so how many bulls you think you've killed frontal?

• 35:18Speaker 01

  Hmm, probably half.

• 35:19Cameron Hanes?

  Really?

• 35:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:20Cameron Hanes?

  Half of those forty?

• 35:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:21Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. You know, you're not supposed to take frontals.

• 35:24Speaker 01

I know. I've heard that. And can something go wrong? Of course.

• 35:28Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 35:30Speaker 01

But I've also, you know, truth be known, the, the first bran Chandler bull I ever killed, that was like fourteen. And

• 35:42Speaker 01

I didn't know you're supposed to check your gear and I didn't know you're supposed to sight in broadheads. Didn't know they would shoot differently. I just thought you screwed them on and away we go.

• 35:50Cameron Hanes?

  They weighed the same.

• 35:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:51Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 35:52Speaker 01

So I, I had gone out

• 35:56Speaker 01

  in Kokeel actually and

• 36:00Speaker 01

blew on my Bugle and I heard one and it heard crashing coming to me and I thought, oh, this is awesome. Well, I came to full draw, walks out about twelve yards, quartered to me. Didn't know you're not supposed to shoot that anyway. So I put it behind his shoulder. And squeeze the trigger. Well, I shot about a foot left. And I hit it perfect frontal.

• 36:22Cameron Hanes?

Oh, that hardly ever works that way.

• 36:26Speaker 01

And I'm not kidding you, that bull was like bam, took about three steps, fell over dead.

• 36:31Cameron Hanes?

  Whoa.

• 36:31Speaker 01

  And I was like, hmm.

• 36:33Cameron Hanes?

  That worked.

• 36:33Speaker 01

That's not where I wanted to hit it, but.

• 36:36Cameron Hanes?

  I'll take it.

• 36:37Speaker 01

Yeah. So I'm registered that away and, and then, you know, as time went on, a lot of opportunities came of real close. And you know, in Oregon coast, like, yeah, I agree. Don't take frontals at any kind of distance, really.

• 36:52Speaker 01

Or be sure of what you're doing, but the frontals I'm talking about are like six, seven yards.

• 36:57Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. And where do you aim usually?

• 36:59Speaker 01

I don't aim center. I aim off to a side.

• 37:01Cameron Hanes?

Right. And between the shoulder blade and the sternum kinda?

• 37:04Speaker 01

And treat it just like a quarter and away shot from the other side. I mean, you're just aiming at other side of their body is how I've always done it.

• 37:11Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 37:12Speaker 01

  And it's super effective.

• 37:15Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah. I've, you know, I always, I always want broadside or quarter and away, of course, but just a couple of years ago, I had one charge in on me, just like you said, two yards, put it like right where you said. And I have, I killed another one in the Eagle Cap where I went like in this hole.

• 37:33Speaker 01

Yeah, right where the color changes.

• 37:35Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah. And it's just, that came out its ass from the front and that bull didn't go anywhere. So it can work.

• 37:43Speaker 01

It, not only did it not go, like literally didn't go anywhere.

• 37:47Cameron Hanes?

  No.

• 37:48Speaker 01

  Didn't take a step.

• 37:49Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah, it was, it's devastating. But also you have to know where you're holding, you have to be calm, you know, can't be punching the trigger because you're off by a couple of inches on a shot like that.

• 38:03Speaker 01

  Game over.

• 38:04Cameron Hanes?

No, you're wounded in that bull.

• 38:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 38:06Cameron Hanes?

So it's not for everybody for sure.

• 38:08Speaker 01

No, I don't think so. I, I, I mean, know your own limits, you know, and when you get in those situations, it's tough to keep together.

• 38:17Cameron Hanes?

A bull screaming in, coming in right to you?

• 38:19Speaker 01

  It's tough.

• 38:20Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 38:20Speaker 01

Yeah. I've seen a lot of people not perform in that situation. I've always had just a simple little routine I go through in my mind, but, um, and I get nervous.

• 38:32Cameron Hanes?

  What is it?

• 38:32Speaker 01

I pull my hat brim down and I never look at their handlers. Once I decide I'm shooting, I'm, I'm off. I make sure I can see their eyeballs and that's it.

• 38:40Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 38:41Speaker 01

  And that's worked.

• 38:42Cameron Hanes?

Good strategy. And then pick a spot or do you think about anything like that?

• 38:46Speaker 01

You know, I would like to say I'm better at that than I am. Cause normally they're pretty close. And I'm just burying that pin in the middle of them.

• 38:57Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 38:57Speaker 01

And now if I'm like trying to be super accurate.

• 39:01Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, like a longer shot.

• 39:02Speaker 01

  I'm gonna pick air.

• 39:03Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, yeah, that makes sense.

• 39:05Speaker 01

Many times, I mean, when you're shooting that bullet right here.

• 39:10Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 39:10Speaker 01

Now I would lose it on that bull. A little different ball game. They're usually like five points.

• 39:16Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, no, I understand. Yeah, going down to Arizona changes things for sure on stuff, but they die the same if you hit them good.

• 39:24Speaker 01

  They sure do.

• 39:25Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 39:26Speaker 01

They sure do. And, and I mean, from what I've seen from Rockies, I don't have a ton of experience hunting them. Probably five or six, seven trips, but I, I love hunting them because of the terrain, first of all. And then the pack out.

• 39:41Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 39:41Speaker 01

  They're like half the size.

• 39:42Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah, those, yeah, I mean, that, I think that ranch bull, I think we, like hanging, it was 500 and some pounds.

• 39:50Speaker 01

It was over 500, I remember.

• 39:51Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, it's a lot.

• 39:54Speaker 01

Or was that Wartnoks Bull that won the Portland one? Like hanging meat? Remember he was talking about that?

• 39:59Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 40:01Speaker 01

Yeah, and if you get, I mean, over 400 pounds is huge.

• 40:06Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 40:06Speaker 01

  Of quartered meat.

• 40:07Cameron Hanes?

  Oh, yeah.

• 40:08Speaker 01

  Giant.

• 40:09Cameron Hanes?

  But 500? Yeah, it's nuts.

• 40:12Speaker 01

Those hams are well over 100.

• 40:13Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 40:14Speaker 01

And that's huge. You hear people say, oh, I had 100 pound of hams. No, it didn't.

• 40:18Cameron Hanes?

  No.

• 40:19Speaker 01

People say a lot of crazy stuff.

• 40:23Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, so how many points do you have for elk?

• 40:27Speaker 01

  Not many.

• 40:27Cameron Hanes?

Oh, God. Well, I got 23.

• 40:31Speaker 01

  Ooh.

• 40:31Cameron Hanes?

So one of these days, I'm gonna actually draw a tag.

• 40:33Speaker 01

  Are you gonna do it?

• 40:34Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 40:36Speaker 01

No, I've always drawn powers when I could.

• 40:38Cameron Hanes?

Oh, okay. Yeah, so you never put in for Winahar or anything like that?

• 40:41Speaker 01

  Nope.

• 40:41Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, cuz I know Kevin one time had, was it Mount Emily?

• 40:45Speaker 01

  Waldo.

• 40:45Cameron Hanes?

Oh, is that what it was?

• 40:46Speaker 01

  Yeah, him and Blake.

• 40:47Cameron Hanes?

Him and Blake, they both killed. I think we had that article in Eastman.

• 40:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:52Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 40:52Speaker 01

Two giant bulls. And that was even, I mean, again, going back, Kevin was a legend to me because he was killing all these giant bulls. But Kevin had figured out where to hunt and play the states game far before anyone I knew.

• 41:04Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, he was early in that.

• 41:06Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 41:06Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 41:08Speaker 01

And he killed some great bulls. I drew one tag in the Mount Emily in the random draw.

• 41:13Cameron Hanes?

  Hmm.

• 41:14Speaker 01

When I was teaching at Nostaca. So that was 20 plus years ago.

• 41:21Cameron Hanes?

  Hmm.

• 41:22Speaker 01

And I drew it, I think, with three points.

• 41:24Cameron Hanes?

  Oh.

• 41:24Speaker 01

And I shot the first six point I saw.

• 41:26Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 41:27Speaker 01

  That thing's giant.

• 41:28Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 41:29Speaker 01

  Super excited.

• 41:30Cameron Hanes?

  Was he like 300?

• 41:32Speaker 01

  No, it was like 270.

• 41:34Cameron Hanes?

  Whatever.

• 41:35Speaker 01

  Big to me.

• 41:35Cameron Hanes?

Oh, I mean, that's that Eagle Cat Bull. I suppose it was like 275, and that was giant for me.

• 41:40Speaker 01

  Yeah, absolutely.

• 41:41Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 41:41Speaker 01

It's funny how life progresses, huh?

• 41:43Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah. No, it's all good. Well, I was telling these guys earlier about, remember when we got our ass kicked in Nevada?

• 41:50Speaker 01

  Yeah, I do.

• 41:51Cameron Hanes?

And then Remy, Remy's brother shot that buck out from under us. Do you know that's who that was, Remi Warren?

• 41:58Speaker 01

No way. I didn't know that.

• 42:00Cameron Hanes?

  Remember that tent?

• 42:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 42:01Cameron Hanes?

Right where we were hunting that big non-typical?

• 42:03Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 42:04Cameron Hanes?

  That was Remy.

• 42:05Speaker 01

  No way.

• 42:06Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah. Cuz they were like, he said they, you know, they grew up there, like, kinda hunting there. He's from Reno.

• 42:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 42:16Cameron Hanes?

And, uh, The car we had rental car was at the trailhead and he said, what and who is back here? And then he saw my name on

• 42:26Speaker 01

  Oh, the paperwork or something?

• 42:28Cameron Hanes?

Bow case or something like that in the car. And he was just like, God dang it. And then we go back and we're hunting the exact same buck.

• 42:35Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 42:35Cameron Hanes?

  And then they killed it.

• 42:37Speaker 01

Oh, man. That was a tough trip.

• 42:39Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, that was, that was, there wasn't a ton of deer back there.

• 42:43Speaker 01

Very little. And I had hunted Nevada a few times at that point. And every time I had gone to Nevada, I was like, holy cow, this is like the holy grail.

• 42:51Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 42:52Speaker 01

  I mean, you're seeing 20, 30 bucks a day.

• 42:54Cameron Hanes?

And rubies, the rubies were loaded.

• 42:56Speaker 01

  Awesome.

• 42:56Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, I killed, I killed bucks there. And it's like, yeah.

• 43:01Cameron Hanes?

Um, what we did get was sunburned.

• 43:03Speaker 01

  Bad.

• 43:04Cameron Hanes?

I remember your ear and neck.

• 43:06Speaker 01

I think I sent you that picture like four years ago at, somehow I came across it maybe on a old camera or something. My, my, remember my ears got like an inch thick burned and cracked and were bleeding. And then the hole in the back of my hat. It's like all scabbed.

• 43:23Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. I would put on some miles on that trip.

• 43:27Speaker 01

That was horrible. Do you remember, what I remember most about that trip was, uh, first of all, I couldn't stomach another MRE. Like it made me gagged.

• 43:35Cameron Hanes?

But your sick photo of me on that rock, that rock.

• 43:38Speaker 01

  Sweet. That was sweet.

• 43:39Cameron Hanes?

  That was good.

• 43:40Speaker 01

But you remember that little spot we found where there were thousands of arrowheads?

• 43:44Cameron Hanes?

  Oh, yeah.

• 43:45Speaker 01

Looking down into that big basin and you could tell like

• 43:48Cameron Hanes?

  They sat there?

• 43:49Speaker 01

Sat there and just chipped arrowheads.

• 43:50Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 43:50Speaker 01

Like broke one, threw it on the ground.

• 43:52Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 43:52Speaker 01

And there were hundreds of them.

• 43:53Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 43:53Speaker 01

Never encountered anything like that in my life.

• 43:55Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 43:56Speaker 01

  That was really cool.

• 43:57Cameron Hanes?

No, that was super, super cool country, but big.

• 44:01Speaker 01

  Giant.

• 44:01Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, we saw sheep up there, didn't we? Wasn't there a bunch of sheep?

• 44:04Speaker 01

  Hundreds.

• 44:05Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, so many sheep.

• 44:06Speaker 01

I remember at one point you were like, cause, cause we hadn't been talking. I said, Cam, I think we hike above all the deer. And you're like, no, I think they're on that mountain over there. And I was like,

• 44:21Speaker 01

  Let's go.

• 44:22Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, it was a, it was a grind, but yeah, that was, that was a tough year too. That was when my dad died. They, I think right before that.

• 44:31Speaker 01

  The day before we left.

• 44:33Cameron Hanes?

It was, it was a rough one. It was a rough one, but uh, that was also, but that was also the year we killed a ranch bull.

• 44:41Speaker 01

  Was it?

• 44:41Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 44:41Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 44:42Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, same year.

• 44:43Speaker 01

  Yeah, that was fun.

• 44:44Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, so we, we made the most of it.

• 44:47Speaker 01

Yeah, that, that was really probably one of the first like backpacking hunts I had gone on.

• 44:53Cameron Hanes?

  Oh, really?

• 44:54Speaker 01

  Extended.

• 44:54Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, that was, that was legit. Now, now, uh, like, what's been your best hunt lately?

• 45:04Speaker 01

Oh, man, definitely my best hunt lately has been hunting with my son.

• 45:08Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 45:09Speaker 01

  Archery hunt.

• 45:09Cameron Hanes?

  Killing bulls.

• 45:10Speaker 01

  Killing bulls.

• 45:11Cameron Hanes?

  He's already killing bulls.

• 45:12Speaker 01

Dude, yeah, yeah. Last year he was 12 years old, shooting like 54 pounds or something crazy. Was just, hadn't gone through puberty or nothing. He was just a midget.

• 45:22Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 45:23Speaker 01

And uh, called him in like a nice five point bull and uh, he's like from here to your weight bench from me, so I can watch everything he does. But we were on this little break. I was trying to get this bull to come up and see me.

• 45:37Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 45:38Speaker 01

And uh, well, I hung up right under him and I watched him draw his bow calm as could be. And I was like,

• 45:45Speaker 01

and I heard it hit. I said, buddy, was it a good shot? Cause you know, now with a 12 year old.

• 45:50Cameron Hanes?

No, they see what they wanna see.

• 45:52Speaker 01

Yeah, I said, was it a good shot? And uh, he said, dad, there's blood all over its side. And it ran off and I caught a little glimpse of him and he was wobbling. I was like, ooh, I think this game over. Um, so we let him, I said, let's give him about an hour, bud. We'll just hang out here. And I'm not, I've never seen this in my life before. Probably 15 minutes after he shot that bull, there was a bunch of crows circling him.

• 46:16Cameron Hanes?

  That fast?

• 46:17Speaker 01

That fast. And I, I said, what do you think those are doing, dude?

• 46:21Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. Could they see them or smell them?

• 46:23Speaker 01

  I would assume see them.

• 46:24Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 46:26Speaker 01

But I didn't know they go off vision either.

• 46:28Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, that's fast.

• 46:30Speaker 01

It was amazing. I was like, I'm pretty sure that bull's laying there dead, bud. Why don't you hike down there and check it out? Oh man, I got video of that kid recovering that bull. That was probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

• 46:40Cameron Hanes?

  I bet.

• 46:41Speaker 01

It was awesome. So then, uh,

• 46:45Speaker 01

Then this year I was off hunting in Idaho and we had a pretty big bull, three oh three, hanging out within the vicinity of my house.

• 46:55Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 46:56Speaker 01

So we have six or seven stands hung up and now he's thirteen, playing football, so his time's kind of limited. He can run home back and forth, but uh, he called me in Idaho and he's like, Dad, Dad, I just shot that big bull.

• 47:12Cameron Hanes?

  No.

• 47:13Speaker 01

And I'm like, are you kidding me dude? And he's, I said, was it a good hit? He said, I, I think I hit it perfect. And I was like, well, have you got, have you looked for it yet? No, no. I'm, should I? And I'm like, what, what else are you gonna do? And turns out that bull only went about forty yards from where he hit it.

• 47:33Cameron Hanes?

Is it three oh three bull?

• 47:34Speaker 01

  Three oh three, Rosie.

• 47:36Cameron Hanes?

  Oh my God.

• 47:37Speaker 01

Thirteen years old. I said, buddy, that's better than-

• 47:39Cameron Hanes?

  You're done.

• 47:40Speaker 01

Bigger than anything I've ever killed in my life.

• 47:41Cameron Hanes?

  You're done.

• 47:42Speaker 01

  Second bull.

• 47:43Cameron Hanes?

  Wow.

• 47:44Speaker 01

And it's awesome because he's a full blown addict.

• 47:48Cameron Hanes?

  Really? That's, that's so fun.

• 47:50Speaker 01

We can cater to that addiction.

• 47:53Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, that is, that's amazing. I don't think there's anything, I mean, people talk about it all the time, but that is about as good as it gets.

• 48:01Speaker 01

For me it is for sure. Uh, it's really, really cool to see your kids take on your passion and then, and then start putting their own efforts into getting better at it.

• 48:13Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 48:14Speaker 01

  That's cool.

• 48:14Cameron Hanes?

Cause like, most kids, to get that passion going, you gotta kind of make them go.

• 48:21Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 48:21Cameron Hanes?

Most kids don't want to go be miserable in the mountains for whatever, get up early. So you, you hope that you expose them to it and then, you know, in, in time they'll, they'll develop this. They, they love to do it.

• 48:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 48:35Cameron Hanes?

Um, but it's cool that your son, second year, two bulls.

• 48:39Speaker 01

  Two bulls.

• 48:40Cameron Hanes?

  With the bow.

• 48:40Speaker 01

  He's like, this is easy.

• 48:43Cameron Hanes?

Um, what I had me thinking, that's awesome for him. Uh, yeah, shout out to him for incredible animal. Um, but you said you, you called in the first bowl for him. Like what, I'm just curious, what's your key to calling in bulls? What do you think?

• 49:01Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 49:02Cameron Hanes?

Why are you good at it?

• 49:03Speaker 01

You're gonna get me going on a tangent here, Ken.

• 49:05Cameron Hanes?

  Okay.

• 49:05Speaker 01

  So.

• 49:07Cameron Hanes?

You just gotta buy a nice dinner.

• 49:09Speaker 01

I'm gonna go against that whole smart theory you, we were talking about earlier.

• 49:13Cameron Hanes?

  Okay.

• 49:14Speaker 01

Cause you know, over the last couple of years, you have so many resources on elk.

• 49:18Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 49:19Speaker 01

And calling elk and this, that and the other thing. And I, I know a lot of the dudes super well that, that talk about it and they're all very bright people. Um, I also think people way over complicate calling elk. Um, and particularly if you could see elk to work them. That's a whole different ballgame, but um, I've always just looked at elk calling, kinda like fishing, to be honest.

• 49:45Cameron Hanes?

  Mm-hmm.

• 49:45Speaker 01

And uh, I mean, if you're fishing and you're using a rooster tail and it's not working, you're gonna change to a panther martin or whatever the case may be. And I've always done that.

• 49:54Cameron Hanes?

  Thomas lure.

• 49:55Speaker 01

Correct. Yeah. Steely, whatever the case may be. Um, so I always kinda start with just super mild calf cow calls. And if I get them responding, that, that's what I stay with.

• 50:06Cameron Hanes?

  Mm-hmm.

• 50:07Speaker 01

Um, if nothing bites on that, I get a little more aggressive and continue to get a little more aggressive, maybe throw in some reekings, some rattlings, some whatever the case may be. I started rattling bulls several years ago, just cause no one was doing it.

• 50:20Cameron Hanes?

  And it works?

• 50:21Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 50:22Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 50:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 50:23Cameron Hanes?

I know I've like picked up antlers, like just this year, I picked up an antler and gave it to Truitt. He was with you in Utah with me and I'm just like, start doing this. You know, cause we, we rig branches on trees.

• 50:34Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 50:35Cameron Hanes?

But if you can have an antler, now we're talking.

• 50:37Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 50:38Cameron Hanes?

Cause those bulls can tell the difference.

• 50:40Speaker 01

I actually had a buddy boil out a shoulder blade.

• 50:43Cameron Hanes?

  Okay.

• 50:43Speaker 01

And that's what he packs with him to rub trees.

• 50:46Cameron Hanes?

It's a lot lighter and smaller.

• 50:47Speaker 01

And it sounds just like an antler.

• 50:49Cameron Hanes?

  That bone sound.

• 50:49Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 50:50Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, it's a, but I, I do think that that is also being smart. Like you, you know, it, it is, cause you, I think we get stuck in, you know, it worked one time. It's gonna, has to keep working, right? It's gonna work every time and that's not how it works. It's, uh, these, these animals are in different moods, different things happen, different encounters that they experienced. Maybe got their ass kicked and everybody talks about this too, but you can't always predict the mood or what happened previously for that animal.

• 51:22Speaker 01

  And it's different daily.

• 51:23Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah, definitely. Yeah, I mean, it's, the weather that day could be different and their effect, and it's affecting how these animals are behaving. But, uh, yeah, I was just curious, cause I know you've, you've called in a lot and, and okay. So on that note, what calls do you like? What do you prefer?

• 51:41Speaker 01

Um, I use a lot of read calls.

• 51:44Cameron Hanes?

  Mm hmm.

• 51:44Speaker 01

  Um.

• 51:45Cameron Hanes?

Like a brand? Do you have a brand, favorite brand?

• 51:47Speaker 01

Corey sends them all to me.

• 51:48Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 51:49Speaker 01

  So they're Elk 101.

• 51:50Cameron Hanes?

  Right.

• 51:50Speaker 01

  Rocky Mountain Elk calls.

• 51:51Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 51:52Speaker 01

What the, they used to be. Um, if I'm going to use a bite and blow call, I love, this is crazy, but I love that Primo Sipper Lip Single. I can do so many different things with that. And that really got comfortable. Actually Born and Raised came out with a call last year. I don't know the name of it. Um, I have it and now it's my favorite call.

• 52:10Cameron Hanes?

  Oh.

• 52:10Speaker 01

  No question.

• 52:11Cameron Hanes?

I like the cowgirl. It's just the same old.

• 52:14Speaker 01

That's that bite and blow one.

• 52:15Cameron Hanes?

That is, yeah. And it's just like, what, well, I, I prefer not to call. I prefer to kill them when they never know I'm even alive.

• 52:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 52:24Cameron Hanes?

And sneak in there, get an arrow in them.

• 52:26Speaker 01

And you're very good at that.

• 52:27Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 52:28Speaker 01

And I would prefer not to kill an elk unless it came into the call.

• 52:31Cameron Hanes?

Oh, you love, you just love calling them in.

• 52:33Speaker 01

  I love calling them in.

• 52:33Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. And that's, hey, whatever works.

• 52:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 52:36Cameron Hanes?

  It's worked for you.

• 52:37Speaker 01

  Exciting.

• 52:37Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. I mean, there's nothing more exciting.

• 52:40Speaker 01

  No.

• 52:40Cameron Hanes?

  Arguably.

• 52:41Speaker 01

  No, no.

• 52:41Cameron Hanes?

Than, than a bull coming in.

• 52:43Speaker 01

But you also blow a lot of setups just from.

• 52:45Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 52:45Speaker 01

Vocalizing and giving your position away.

• 52:48Cameron Hanes?

Well, and I said this the other day and I said, all I know, and it's not like I'm obsessed with like the biggest bull ever. But I just know like if I'm going someplace very special, like, you know, San Carlos or whatever, and there is a giant bull. I have a better chance of killing it without making a noise.

• 53:09Speaker 01

  Hundred percent.

• 53:10Cameron Hanes?

  That one bull.

• 53:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:11Cameron Hanes?

  If I'm after one bull.

• 53:13Speaker 01

Um, I think that's probably true with any mature bull.

• 53:16Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, it's just, they've seen a lot. They've heard a lot.

• 53:20Speaker 01

Especially in today's day and age.

• 53:22Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah, definitely. So it's a, I think you can, you know, I said this the other day. You can definitely call in and kill bulls for sure. I mean, calling has killed so many bulls, but if you're after one, I was talking to Casey Brooks about this the other day, you know, he killed that giant one and that he was in a blind for that one, but uh, um, those giant old bulls, man, you know, and what was I, oh, no, this was with bucks and I'm, I'm wondering if bulls are the same. But uh, I was hunting down in Texas and they say, like, they let those bull, those bucks get to, sorry, I got bulls on my mind, but now I'm talking bucks, but they let those bucks get to seven and a half or eight and a half years old, which is

• 54:06Speaker 01

  Crazy.

• 54:06Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, I mean, a four, to me, a four year old is mature, right? Um, but what happens is those animals, they rut hard, five, six, and then they get older, they don't rut.

• 54:18Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 54:19Cameron Hanes?

They just wanna eat and so they get bigger. Like they, they're

• 54:22Speaker 01

  They're not burning stuff.

• 54:23Cameron Hanes?

They're not burnt, wasting calories, chasing does around, fighting bucks. And I wonder, like that bull Casey just killed, I wonder if it got to four ninety because it's not rutting hard.

• 54:35Speaker 01

  Could be.

• 54:35Cameron Hanes?

It's not breaking hours. It's not wasting energy chasing stuff around.

• 54:38Speaker 01

Well, what's your experience like with big bulls at the San Carlos? Are you seeing them? Are they rutting hard or are those big monarchs off by themselves some of the time?

• 54:48Cameron Hanes?

Um, well, like that one was by itself this year, that, that big one I killed. Um, tight bull came in, yeah, came into a cow call. This bull, I didn't make a noise, I snuck, he's, he's three ninety-eight and I, I just was in the middle of that herd and he, he followed a cow by, but had no idea I was there. That bull came to a cow call by himself. So I haven't seen him, I can't speak.

• 55:16Speaker 01

  By himself.

• 55:17Cameron Hanes?

  By himself.

• 55:20Cameron Hanes?

By himself. Yeah, nuts. So I don't, I've seen a lot of bulls there. I haven't seen giants. And I, that, somebody will prove me wrong and that's fine, but. Yeah, it I haven't seen the giants pushing around a big herd. But maybe it's just I haven't seen him.

• 55:43Speaker 01

  I would assume.

• 55:44Cameron Hanes?

That bull in Utah was by himself. That that one on that pedestal. Yeah. That other bull on the floor is by himself with the skull that leaning up against it. So it's like, I don't know. If I think about it now, that bull over there under the Hoyt sign by himself.

• 56:04Speaker 01

That's crazy. Do you think the competition in those areas is good enough to keep a bull like that from having herd?

• 56:13Speaker 01

Or being being the ranch bull mentality of like, I don't care if you come around, I'll whip your ass.

• 56:19Cameron Hanes?

I think they'll get a hot cow and take her.

• 56:22Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 56:23Cameron Hanes?

And push her off into a hole. Breeder, go get another one. I don't think they need to be around a herd.

• 56:29Speaker 01

It's interesting you say that because I've I've always had that theory about big Roosevelts. Like you'll never, very rarely will you see a big Roosevelt just running with a herd of elk. I truly believe they wait on herds of elk and the timber, take what they want and then let them go.

• 56:47Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah. I don't know. I haven't really thought about it till talking to you and like looking at these now. But that one giant Roosevelt too, that you know, it's it's not here right now, but you wanted to look at he he was. The herd was out there and I didn't even know he was even around. He never made a noise. And I just looked over on the timber line and I was like, oh my God. But he wasn't rutting, didn't make a noise.

• 57:13Speaker 01

  Really?

• 57:13Cameron Hanes?

So I don't know if he's just hanging around, waiting for a cow to come in, but.

• 57:17Speaker 01

Dude, there's elk in that country that I don't think have been seen by people.

• 57:20Cameron Hanes?

I don't think that one had.

• 57:22Speaker 01

  I know that one.

• 57:23Cameron Hanes?

Because that logging country, they're gonna see every bull.

• 57:26Speaker 01

And I'm gonna hear about a bull like that.

• 57:28Cameron Hanes?

  I bet. I bet. I mean.

• 57:30Speaker 01

  Hundred percent.

• 57:32Cameron Hanes?

A three fifty five seven by nine. How does he sneak through?

• 57:37Speaker 01

Where has he been for the past seven years?

• 57:40Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 57:40Speaker 01

I mean. I think I was talking to a buddy who who guides on the Eckley side of that.

• 57:47Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 57:48Speaker 01

And he said that bull had been over there.

• 57:50Cameron Hanes?

  Really?

• 57:51Speaker 01

  That year.

• 57:51Cameron Hanes?

  Oh.

• 57:52Speaker 01

So they were after him a little bit and.

• 57:54Cameron Hanes?

  Is that Spoon Creek?

• 57:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 57:56Cameron Hanes?

  Okay, yeah.

• 57:57Speaker 01

  Ross.

• 57:57Cameron Hanes?

  So they had seen him?

• 57:59Speaker 01

  Ross had seen him, yeah.

• 58:01Cameron Hanes?

What did he think of him?

• 58:02Speaker 01

  I mean, it's mind blowing.

• 58:03Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 58:04Speaker 01

I don't even think people believe you when you say you see a bull.

• 58:07Cameron Hanes?

Probably not. Oh, right. Yeah, you saw a 350. Yeah, sure you did. Well, because normally, like a 290, like we said earlier, is giant.

• 58:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 58:17Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, so you would, if anybody did say that, you'd be like, mm hmm.

• 58:21Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 58:22Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, no, and, um, yeah, so I don't, I always thought like in that country, you know, that, that, uh, for the National Forest land up there.

• 58:32Speaker 01

Like into that rusty beaut country.

• 58:34Cameron Hanes?

That's big timber. Could they be up there? Could they be up there living?

• 58:38Speaker 01

  Yeah, absolutely.

• 58:39Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 58:40Speaker 01

Um, and that stuff doesn't get touched.

• 58:43Cameron Hanes?

  Mm hmm.

• 58:44Speaker 01

I mean, the access to some of that stuff, especially during fire season, you're not getting in there. But it's so rugged and remote. I remember there used to be a gold miner that lived back there and we used to ride our motorcycles way out sixes and, uh,

• 58:57Cameron Hanes?

  Mm hmm.

• 58:57Speaker 01

Somehow my mom and dad knew him. And then we would hike in like three miles to his cabin.

• 59:02Cameron Hanes?

  Mm hmm.

• 59:03Speaker 01

And that was some of the roughest country I've ever seen.

• 59:06Cameron Hanes?

Is that like, where's Johnson Mountain? Is that up that way?

• 59:10Speaker 01

So when you turn out to, uh, sixes, if you went straight right there, that goes up on Johnson.

• 59:18Cameron Hanes?

  Okay, gotcha.

• 59:19Speaker 01

But if you went out to like, I think it's like 4200 and then turn left, that would take you up into all that bluffy rusty beaut stuff.

• 59:27Cameron Hanes?

  Oh, I see.

• 59:28Speaker 01

It's like probably the headwaters of the sixes.

• 59:30Cameron Hanes?

  Hmm, okay. Well.

• 59:33Speaker 01

Well, isn't that Avery Mountain back in that country?

• 59:35Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, I think that is, yeah.

• 59:37Speaker 01

Yeah, I think so. I just remembered his name, yeah.

• 59:39Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 59:41Cameron Hanes?

Old Jake killed a good buck this year. Do you see it?

• 59:43Speaker 01

  A crazy one.

• 59:44Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 59:44Speaker 01

I said, where did that thing come from?

• 59:45Cameron Hanes?

I know, I know. He was all excited.

• 59:48Speaker 01

  Oh, I bet.

• 59:48Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 59:49Speaker 01

  I bet.

• 59:49Cameron Hanes?

That was pretty awesome. And somebody was telling me like, yeah, Jake, he'll, he won't kill any big ones now. He wants it for his grandkids and he'll just kill a forked or now. And then it's like, wait, I thought, what happened to this forked or stuff? Well, there's limits to everything, right?

• 1:00:05Speaker 01

You see a buck like that there.

• 1:00:06Cameron Hanes?

You see, I think it was a six by five.

• 1:00:08Speaker 01

  It was something wild.

• 1:00:09Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:10Speaker 01

Like, and not only that, there's never been that genetic around there.

• 1:00:13Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:13Speaker 01

  Where did that?

• 1:00:14Cameron Hanes?

  The extra times.

• 1:00:15Speaker 01

  Where'd that thing come from?

• 1:00:16Cameron Hanes?

I know. Normally down there, like, you know, a good three by three, three by four, four by four, but throwing extras?

• 1:00:24Speaker 01

Dude, yeah, that, that was mind blowing.

• 1:00:27Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:28Speaker 01

  Super cool for him.

• 1:00:29Cameron Hanes?

Well, um, yeah, I didn't, I mean, we're already getting late. You got, you're on a work night. I'm retired, so I don't have to do anything. But, uh, how's, uh, how's the North Douglas Warriors doing on football this year?

• 1:00:42Speaker 01

They actually, uh, football team lost in the state championship.

• 1:00:46Cameron Hanes?

  They did.

• 1:00:46Speaker 01

  They did.

• 1:00:47Cameron Hanes?

They made the final, the championship game. Dang.

• 1:00:50Speaker 01

And I'm coaching girls basketball still.

• 1:00:51Cameron Hanes?

  Okay. How are you guys?

• 1:00:54Speaker 01

We, we lost in the state championship last year and, uh, I thought this year would be an interesting year. We brought in like 10 new girls.

• 1:01:04Cameron Hanes?

  Where'd they come from?

• 1:01:05Speaker 01

  Just underclassmen.

• 1:01:07Cameron Hanes?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:01:07Speaker 01

Yeah. Um, many of them were on varsity last year, just didn't get a ton of playing time. Uh, my daughter's actually a senior this year and my stepdaughter's a sophomore. So there's

• 1:01:17Cameron Hanes?

  Okay.

• 1:01:17Speaker 01

Good little investment in the program, but we actually just knocked off the number one seeded team in state Monday night.

• 1:01:23Cameron Hanes?

  Really?

• 1:01:24Speaker 01

Yeah. So we're rolling right now.

• 1:01:25Cameron Hanes?

  Whoa.

• 1:01:25Speaker 01

Not sure how with this group, but we're getting her done.

• 1:01:28Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah. So what's your record?

• 1:01:31Speaker 01

Right now, I think we're 13 and three.

• 1:01:33Cameron Hanes?

  Okay.

• 1:01:34Speaker 01

But we lost to top five or rank three A schools and

• 1:01:37Cameron Hanes?

  Oh.

• 1:01:38Speaker 01

  Doing pretty well.

• 1:01:38Cameron Hanes?

And are you guys two A, one A, one A? Okay. And you're playing three A?

• 1:01:43Speaker 01

Yeah, we play up every once in a while.

• 1:01:45Cameron Hanes?

  Competitive?

• 1:01:45Speaker 01

Uh, yeah, we lost by one and actually by 16.

• 1:01:49Cameron Hanes?

  Okay.

• 1:01:49Speaker 01

  So.

• 1:01:50Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. And then what was the other loss?

• 1:01:53Speaker 01

Our other loss was a loss that shouldn't have been. We lost to a private school and it was early before before we kind of jailed and got things figured out.

• 1:02:02Cameron Hanes?

Now you're kind of clicking a little bit?

• 1:02:03Speaker 01

I think we'd get that one back by 20 now.

• 1:02:06Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:06Speaker 01

  I think so.

• 1:02:08Cameron Hanes?

Beat the number one team on Monday.

• 1:02:09Speaker 01

  We did, yeah.

• 1:02:10Cameron Hanes?

  At home or there?

• 1:02:11Speaker 01

  At home.

• 1:02:12Cameron Hanes?

Oh, nice. I bet. Was everybody fired up?

• 1:02:14Speaker 01

Yeah, it was fun. It was fun.

• 1:02:16Cameron Hanes?

  Was it a close game?

• 1:02:19Speaker 01

Five, I think we won by.

• 1:02:20Cameron Hanes?

  Okay.

• 1:02:20Speaker 01

Yeah, super low scoring game. I think it was actually like 31-25, just a defensive battle.

• 1:02:27Cameron Hanes?

Were, uh, were you taking air out of the ball, trying to slow it down? How come it's so slow?

• 1:02:34Speaker 01

  Well, I think.

• 1:02:35Cameron Hanes?

Cause you know, sometimes like if the teams, the team you're playing is better, you want to limit those possessions.

• 1:02:40Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 1:02:41Cameron Hanes?

Right? So was it, or was it just?

• 1:02:43Speaker 01

I thought both of us left quite a few points on the table. I mean, at the end of the day, it is girls' basketball.

• 1:02:48Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:49Speaker 01

There's going to be some things not go. Um, but I thought both teams did a really good job of just kind of muddying up the key and forcing everything out. And then it was.

• 1:02:58Cameron Hanes?

  Making them earn it.

• 1:02:58Speaker 01

  Rebounding battle.

• 1:02:59Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:03:01Cameron Hanes?

So you, uh, what type of coach are you like, got to better play defense or you're not on the court?

• 1:03:06Speaker 01

  That is what we do.

• 1:03:07Cameron Hanes?

  Really?

• 1:03:08Speaker 01

And we play it baseline to baseline all game.

• 1:03:10Cameron Hanes?

  Forty minutes of hell.

• 1:03:12Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:03:12Cameron Hanes?

Well, I don't know. Is it 40 or 32? Okay, 32 minutes of hell.

• 1:03:16Speaker 01

We rotate, oh, nine kids or so and just keep a lot of pressure on people all game long.

• 1:03:21Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah. Hit any threes?

• 1:03:24Speaker 01

We do. We have a very good shooting team.

• 1:03:26Cameron Hanes?

  Oh, good.

• 1:03:27Speaker 01

And that game we only hit two, actually.

• 1:03:29Cameron Hanes?

  Oh.

• 1:03:30Speaker 01

But generally we hit quite a few.

• 1:03:31Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:32Speaker 01

Yeah. Well, most people zone us.

• 1:03:35Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:35Speaker 01

Shoot them right out of that.

• 1:03:37Cameron Hanes?

There you go. It doesn't ta- I mean, hey, dump it into the, to the big girl, then she kicks it out. Usually you're open.

• 1:03:44Speaker 01

Yep. So if you move the ball.

• 1:03:46Cameron Hanes?

  Move the ball.

• 1:03:47Speaker 01

  Yep. Keep spacing.

• 1:03:49Cameron Hanes?

So are you guys going to win the state championship?

• 1:03:51Speaker 01

No, I'm not. I wouldn't go on record saying that, but I would say we could, we could beat anyone in the 1A level.

• 1:03:57Cameron Hanes?

  Oh, so just having.

• 1:03:59Speaker 01

Stay healthy, get a little bit lucky.

• 1:04:01Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:02Speaker 01

  Yeah, we're in the mix.

• 1:04:03Cameron Hanes?

  Oh, that's awesome.

• 1:04:04Speaker 01

  For sure.

• 1:04:05Cameron Hanes?

  That's awesome.

• 1:04:05Speaker 01

We have a. We've been to Baker for the last five years straight.

• 1:04:10Cameron Hanes?

  That's so fun, isn't it?

• 1:04:11Speaker 01

Great environment. Yeah, yeah. And that's kind of cool, Cam, because that's like all the small towns.

• 1:04:16Cameron Hanes?

  I know.

• 1:04:17Speaker 01

Wild used to go over there.

• 1:04:18Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, well, that was like, that's probably the biggest thing I miss about like Tanner being in high school.

• 1:04:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:25Cameron Hanes?

Because going to Baker was, and those kids are good.

• 1:04:28Speaker 01

It's a small school, like it's a small school tournament, but you only need five players. Hundred percent.

• 1:04:34Cameron Hanes?

And small schools can produce five good players.

• 1:04:39Speaker 01

Well, you know, and I was just talking to a longtime coach that's been around women's girls' basketball forever. I've only been doing it for six years at North Douglas. And I said, first of all, it's kind of amazing to me, we're competing with that level of team this year with what we brought back and have. And he said, you know, honestly, there's just not an elite team this year. And for the past six, seven, eight years, there's been that elite team that's going up and beating the three and four A state champs. I mean, Crane's had a run in girls' basketball that's been phenomenal and will go beat Baker and Baker will win the four A state title or be a semifinal team.

• 1:05:17Cameron Hanes?

  Wow.

• 1:05:17Speaker 01

You know, so some real, real good, small school basketball.

• 1:05:24Speaker 01

And I feel like this year it's kind of leveled out a little bit of, okay, this is what it should be.

• 1:05:29Cameron Hanes?

Well, all I remember, you know, Baker, it's still at Baker, right? Yeah. So like when Tanner was there, I remember they played Powder Valley maybe in the state championship. But, you know, there's, I don't know what the gym holds, couple thousand maybe.

• 1:05:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:05:46Cameron Hanes?

And then they had an overflow gym with this, with the game on that.

• 1:05:50Speaker 01

  Monitor.

• 1:05:51Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:05:51Cameron Hanes?

And it's like, that is wild.

• 1:05:55Speaker 01

  And it gets wild there.

• 1:05:56Cameron Hanes?

  It is.

• 1:05:57Speaker 01

  Super cool.

• 1:05:57Cameron Hanes?

  Loud. I don't know. It's amazing.

• 1:06:00Speaker 01

Mel grew up playing in Pendleton, which is the two A state tournament. And so we always debate which one's better, but I've always said Baker's super cool. Just be, well, first of all, growing up in Powers, that's the only thing I knew.

• 1:06:12Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

So if we got to make a nine hour drive to Baker to play basketball, that was cool.

• 1:06:17Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:18Speaker 01

But I like, I think they used to do a better job, but you know, the, the businesses in town all adopted team and, and then you're running into other teams everywhere you go. It's just a cool environment. It's usually snowing, which it's raining here.

• 1:06:32Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, no, I, we used to love making that trip over there and, I mean, Mohawk, when Tanner was there, they never won, they lost in the state championship and then got one, one third. And then I don't know what happened the other time, but.

• 1:06:51Speaker 01

But you made it over there several.

• 1:06:52Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:52Speaker 01

  Which is tough to do.

• 1:06:53Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, yeah. The one year, yeah, when Cord was.

• 1:06:57Speaker 01

  I remember that.

• 1:06:58Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, he was, he got hurt in football and then came back for basketball. They won, were number one all year, won like 15 in a row and then got over there. But Powder Valley, man, they had just big six, six. I mean, I don't know where this, and then some freshmen or sophomore, like I remember back to back dunks, like just stole it twice. And Powder Valley's right there. So.

• 1:07:24Speaker 01

I practiced there when we were there.

• 1:07:25Cameron Hanes?

  So it's a little hometown.

• 1:07:28Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:07:29Cameron Hanes?

  Jim going crazy.

• 1:07:30Speaker 01

  They're bringing a crowd.

• 1:07:32Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:32Speaker 01

  Oh, it's wild.

• 1:07:33Cameron Hanes?

It was, it was pretty nuts. But yeah, I mean, it's a, for small town, I mean, that's, that's all that matters at that time.

• 1:07:40Speaker 01

It's a big stage for a small town kid.

• 1:07:42Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. And like, I'll, I'll just mention it real quick, but where you came from, Powers had somehow had a girl that came out of there who was a state, uh, all time state leading scorer for a while.

• 1:07:56Speaker 01

  Jenny?

• 1:07:56Cameron Hanes?

Jenny Mo, Mo, yeah. I mean, how, and then played, I think in the WNBA.

• 1:08:00Speaker 01

And you know what's cool about that? Yeah, she did. So Jenny was a year behind me in school. So I went to school with Jenny from first grade through high school.

• 1:08:09Cameron Hanes?

  Gotcha.

• 1:08:09Speaker 01

And she did, I think she's like six, four, six, five.

• 1:08:12Cameron Hanes?

  She's big.

• 1:08:13Speaker 01

Big. Um, they won a state title. Then she went and played for the Ducks.

• 1:08:18Cameron Hanes?

  And Ron was a coach.

• 1:08:19Speaker 01

  Ron was a coach.

• 1:08:20Cameron Hanes?

I don't know if you knew that.

• 1:08:20Speaker 01

Yeah, I did know that. Sure did. Yeah. And then, uh, she played for the Ducks for four years and then went and played in the WNBA. And now you know where she is?

• 1:08:31Cameron Hanes?

  Huh?

• 1:08:32Speaker 01

She owns a bakery in Baker.

• 1:08:34Cameron Hanes?

  Oh.

• 1:08:34Speaker 01

So every year we go to Baker, we go see Jenny.

• 1:08:37Cameron Hanes?

  Oh, do you?

• 1:08:38Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:08:38Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:39Speaker 01

  Super cool.

• 1:08:39Cameron Hanes?

What a story though, from, come from, I mean, Powers is such a small town to make it to the WNBA. I mean, that's

• 1:08:47Speaker 01

  Pretty amazing, actually.

• 1:08:48Cameron Hanes?

  That is.

• 1:08:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:08:50Cameron Hanes?

  I mean.

• 1:08:51Speaker 01

And now she's probably the best baker in Oregon, man.

• 1:08:53Cameron Hanes?

  Is she?

• 1:08:54Speaker 01

  That her place is unbelievable.

• 1:08:56Cameron Hanes?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:08:56Speaker 01

  Yeah, like, off the charts.

• 1:08:59Cameron Hanes?

Well, she's good at basketball and baking.

• 1:09:01Speaker 01

  Yeah, she's, she's big.

• 1:09:03Cameron Hanes?

  That's awesome.

• 1:09:04Speaker 01

And she's so cool. She always takes a picture with our team and still visits and just a nice lady.

• 1:09:10Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, wow, that's cool. Yeah, well, Jody, thank you. I mean, I just wanted to sit and talk a little bow hunting with you. I figured, didn't even plan, I mean, didn't even plan on being here and here you are.

• 1:09:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:09:23Cameron Hanes?

  Talked bow hunting and.

• 1:09:24Speaker 01

Cool, it was fun. I've never done this before.

• 1:09:26Cameron Hanes?

  Wow, you're great.

• 1:09:27Speaker 01

  Appreciate it.

• 1:09:28Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, like I said, I have a lot of respect for you as a bow hunter. You've been, you know, got it done for decades. More than, you know, more success than almost anybody I know, public land, Oregon. And, uh, I mean, a lot of respect and it's just, it's, it's an honor to have you on here to talk bow hunting because we've shared hunt, tough hunts together, shared success together. Uh, been friends for a long time, so thank you very much.

• 1:09:56Speaker 01

  Appreciate it, man.

• 1:09:57Cameron Hanes?

  All right, thank you.

• 1:09:58Speaker 01

  Thank you.
