Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon (Gone Before Goodbye, The Morning Show, Big Little Lies) is an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Academy Award-winning actor and producer. Reese joins the Armchair Expert to discuss growing up on a military base in Germany, being surprisingly not cautious when her kids want to chase adrenaline, and originally thinking that acting was a hobby to pay the bills. Reese and Dax talk about her theory on dating and the decline in romcoms, refusing to read during her audition for Election while in character as Tracy Flick, and her experience hosting the first SNL back after 9/11. Reese explains why women make movie stars of men, cowriting her novel Gone Before Goodbye with Harlan Coben, and how her edges have softened over the course of her life. Welcome, welcome, welcome to Armchair Expert. I'm Dax Shepard and I'm joined by Monica Padman.

• 0:05Speaker 01

  Hi.

• 0:06Dax Shepard?

We are keeping the powerful gal train a chuggin'.

• 0:11Speaker 01

  It's so cool.

• 0:13Dax Shepard?

  What a fall we've had.

• 0:15Speaker 01

  It's true.

• 0:16Dax Shepard?

We're gonna throw Brie in there, too.

• 0:17Speaker 01

  Oh, great, yes.

• 0:19Dax Shepard?

Reese Witherspoon. I'm not gonna say my German pronunciation. You'll have to listen to the fact check for that. Reese is an award-winning actor, producer, and author. Legally Blonde, The Morning Show, Big Little Lies, Cruel Intentions, my favorite movie ever, Election, Sweet Home Alabama. She's got a novel out right now that she co-wrote. This Girl Can't Stop, Gone Before Goodbye. And yeah, she teamed up with bestselling author Harlan Coben, who, as we discussed in here, has got like 57 shows on Netflix. He's like the most prolific person ever. And the very fun part about the audiobook is that she reads it and of course, she brings all of her talent to bear on it.

• 1:01Dax Shepard?

• 1:39Speaker 01

I have to say, I am so ready for fall. I want sweaters. I've been craving a true crisp morning where I actually need a jacket. I can't wait.

• 1:48Dax Shepard?

I'm fully there. The second it dips below 70, I'm like, this is my season. Give me the layers. Give me the boots. Give me a reason to wear something other than a t-shirt. And honestly, that's why I love Quince, because fall is when your wardrobe actually has to show up. And everything at Quince is 50 to 80% less than similar brands. We're talking 100% Mongolian cashmere sweaters, starting at $60.

• 2:10Speaker 01

$60. $60 for cashmere that you'd expect from a luxury brand without the luxury price tag. It's amazing. Gets me every time. It really shouldn't be real, but it is because they go straight to the factories, they skip the middlemen, and they just hand you the savings. The stuff isn't trendy. It's the kind of pieces you grab over and over because they work every time.

• 2:28Dax Shepard?

The 100% Mongolian cashmere sweaters for me are it. When I look at Steve McQueen, this man owned a couple of sweaters he wore all the time and he looks iconic.

• 2:37Speaker 01

  It's a uniform.

• 2:38Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 2:39Speaker 01

And Quince isn't just about the clothes. They have hotel quality bedding, cookware, bath essentials, thoughtfully designed furniture. You can really go there and outfit your entire apartment or house. So if you're in need of any kind of fall refresh at home too, same quality, same attention to detail for every corner of your life.

• 2:56Dax Shepard?

Find your next fall favorites at Quince. Download the Quince app for app exclusive offers or go to quince.com. Get free shipping on your order and 365 day returns. Now available in Canada and the UK too. And when Quince asks where you heard about them, let them know it was Armchair Expert. It's the best way to support the show. We get support from AG1. Fall is that time when your body and mind are getting ready for the winter. You're settling in, bracing for the cold. Your body's already running a deficit from the shorter days and broken sleep patterns. You don't want a nutrient deficit stacked on top of that too.

• 3:32Speaker 01

That's where your AG1 routine earns its spot. It's not fixing your sleep or your alarm time. It's giving your body what it needs so the dark mornings don't tank you before you even start. One scoop cold water every morning before anything else.

• 3:45Dax Shepard?

AG1 Next Gen has 75 plus ingredients, vitamins, minerals, pre and probiotics, superfoods, backed by four separate gold standard clinical trials. Key nutrient levels improved with three months of consistent use.

• 3:59Speaker 01

That's the part people miss. It's not a one day fix. It's what happens when you stay consistent.

• 4:03Dax Shepard?

It's an easy everyday thing. I've added it to my morning routine and I'm going to tell you, I actually love the taste of it. It's like Pavlovian. I drink it and I know I'm going to get that little vitamin buzz.

• 4:13Speaker 01

Well, that's also the thing. When you do it first thing in the morning, you already feel kind of self-esteem because you're like, I already did something good for myself.

• 4:20Dax Shepard?

Yes. Go to drinkag1.com/dax and for a limited time, get a free immunity bundle, including a bottle of omega three fish oil and a bottle of vitamin D3 K2 with your first subscription order of AG1 Next Gen or AG1 Pro. That's drinkag1.com/dax. And after checkout, be sure to let them know that Armchair Expert sent you.

• 5:04Speaker 02

Hi. How are you? Oh, yeah, let's hug. Let's do it. Good to see you.

• 5:08Speaker 01

I feel like I have done this podcast, but I haven't.

• 5:10Dax Shepard?

  You haven't.

• 5:10Speaker 02

  You have not.

• 5:11Dax Shepard?

  We would remember.

• 5:12Speaker 02

I did something with you and Kristen. That's right. You did.

• 5:14Speaker 01

  But that wasn't this?

• 5:15Speaker 02

That wasn't this. That was called Shattered Glass. That was on Zoom. That was a hooray women podcast.

• 5:22Speaker 01

  Hooray women?

• 5:23Dax Shepard?

This is a hooray men podcast. We celebrate all the achievements of men historically.

• 5:28Speaker 01

We love men. I am raising two of them.

• 5:32Dax Shepard?

I know. I want to talk about that.

• 5:34Speaker 01

  That's so sweet.

• 5:35Dax Shepard?

Will you flash your watch at me for one second?

• 5:38Speaker 02

  Are you a watch guy?

• 5:39Dax Shepard?

I love that watch. It's really handsome.

• 5:41Speaker 02

  It's got a good story.

• 5:42Dax Shepard?

  It is? What's the story?

• 5:43Speaker 01

  Let's hear it.

• 5:44Speaker 02

Oh, I think I want to tell this story.

• 5:46Speaker 01

We can always cut it after the fact.

• 5:48Speaker 02

It was like somebody didn't want to pay me.

• 5:50Dax Shepard?

  Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 5:51Speaker 02

And I was like, there's this really cool watch I want. And it's so dumb because what they should have paid me.

• 5:56Dax Shepard?

  Sure, sure, sure, sure.

• 5:57Speaker 02

But I was like, I love this watch. Yes. And I would never buy this for myself.

• 6:02Dax Shepard?

And that's more fun than the amount of money maybe you should have got that would be sitting in a bank account at some point. So in a weird way, it is more valuable.

• 6:10Speaker 02

  You know.

• 6:11Dax Shepard?

  No, you're not.

• 6:11Speaker 02

Accumulated interest, net present value, cash.

• 6:15Speaker 01

Dax bought me a car. Not that exact situation.

• 6:18Dax Shepard?

  But similar.

• 6:19Speaker 01

  Similar.

• 6:20Dax Shepard?

I'd offered her a bonus and she turned it down.

• 6:23Speaker 01

  Wow, there was some.

• 6:24Dax Shepard?

  I didn't phrase it right.

• 6:24Speaker 01

  There were some interpersonal issues.

• 6:27Dax Shepard?

Sure, sure, sure. I did not probably phrase any of it all correctly, but then she's like, no, I don't fucking want this bonus. So I was like, oh, fuck. And then I was like, well, if I just drop a car off, what's she gonna do? She's not gonna go through the pain in the ass of returning the thing.

• 6:40Speaker 02

  That's true.

• 6:41Speaker 01

  And I didn't. It's still my car. It's a great car.

• 6:44Dax Shepard?

  Somehow I did that correctly.

• 6:45Speaker 02

You're a car guy though, right? You love cars.

• 6:47Dax Shepard?

I am a car guy. Well, you went to our house.

• 6:49Speaker 02

I figured that out when I saw your station ring. I was like, that is.

• 6:54Dax Shepard?

  Were you horny, be honest?

• 6:56Speaker 02

Absolutely not. It didn't do anything for you. Closed. The shop.

• 7:00Dax Shepard?

It only makes dudes horny, unfortunately.

• 7:02Speaker 02

That station wagon with the wood paneling.

• 7:04Dax Shepard?

Yes, because it has a 700 horsepower engine in it. If you were hearing it run, you'd be like, what is that?

• 7:09Speaker 01

I will give it to you that a lot of men who come through this attic and garage have commented on the cars, have commented on Dax's muscular body.

• 7:17Dax Shepard?

Which, again, women don't like, but men like. There's all these things I do, and I'm not sure why, because only men like it.

• 7:23Speaker 02

That's not true. That's not true.

• 7:24Dax Shepard?

  I think it's mostly true.

• 7:27Speaker 02

  What are you eating?

• 7:27Dax Shepard?

Nicotine mint, and then I have a spray as well. Were you ever a nicotine person?

• 7:32Speaker 02

Nope. I tried really hard to smoke, and it was just a big fail.

• 7:37Dax Shepard?

Why? What went wrong? They're pretty easy to operate.

• 7:40Speaker 02

No, I couldn't breathe it in. I couldn't inhale. I was just a ding dong. Oh my God, why are you the cutest human?

• 7:46Dax Shepard?

Hand it to her on camera, please. I want the world to know, and I want her to unwrap it.

• 7:51Speaker 02

  People wouldn't start.

• 7:51Dax Shepard?

  Your most popular guest, always.

• 7:53Speaker 02

This is amazing. What is this? It's sourdough.

• 7:55Dax Shepard?

Please unwrap it and smell it, because it smells so good.

• 7:58Speaker 02

I can smell it. Okay, okay. I'll see you. We'll see you at the other place. Okay.

• 8:02Dax Shepard?

  Thanks for the breath.

• 8:03Speaker 02

  Text me. Call me.

• 8:04Speaker 01

Sour dough. This is a real Taylor Swift move she just did, providing sour dough.

• 8:10Speaker 02

  She's no dummy.

• 8:11Speaker 01

  She's no dummy.

• 8:12Dax Shepard?

They call her the Taylor Swift of the acting world.

• 8:14Speaker 02

  Do you think?

• 8:15Dax Shepard?

I know, I just floated that.

• 8:17Speaker 02

  She's so loved.

• 8:18Dax Shepard?

  She is loved.

• 8:19Speaker 02

  And she's just so talented.

• 8:21Dax Shepard?

  I know. She really is.

• 8:23Speaker 01

The voice. The voice. She can do it all.

• 8:24Dax Shepard?

  It's maddening.

• 8:25Speaker 02

  Is it maddening?

• 8:26Dax Shepard?

It is. When you live with someone who's dramatically better at everything than you, it can be maddening.

• 8:32Speaker 02

But you have your own skills.

• 8:33Dax Shepard?

I can lift things. I can lift heavier things.

• 8:37Speaker 02

No, you're hysterically funny. You're an amazing writer. You're great on camera. You make difficult people look great.

• 8:43Dax Shepard?

  Oh, thank.

• 8:44Speaker 01

  Wow, that's really nice.

• 8:46Speaker 02

You can make an introvert talk about their lives. That's good.

• 8:49Dax Shepard?

  Okay, good, good, good.

• 8:50Speaker 01

  Nice compliment.

• 8:51Speaker 02

And you're good with research. I was like, oh, God, what are they gonna dig up?

• 8:54Speaker 01

He is very good with research.

• 8:55Dax Shepard?

But you should know where this starts.

• 8:57Speaker 02

Hold on. Am I supposed to smell the bread?

• 8:58Speaker 01

Yeah, let's smell it. Let's take a look at it.

• 9:01Dax Shepard?

And look at the top. This thing turned out.

• 9:03Speaker 02

Oh, it's pretty. Oh, my God, like a big thing of butter and some flaky salt. And a radish?

• 9:10Speaker 01

  A radish.

• 9:11Dax Shepard?

No, we're out on the radish.

• 9:12Speaker 02

The little like tomato and mozzarella.

• 9:16Speaker 02

I'm excited. If she and I were ever friends and had to spend time together, we just have a craft afternoon. We just craft it. Oh, she would love that.

• 9:22Dax Shepard?

What's your favorite kind of crafting? You're almost finding irresistible to not make a sweater out of that little yarn right there.

• 9:27Speaker 02

I'm gonna make a little flower. I do pay my numbers. I do watercolor. I do picture frame making. I do chocolate bonbon making. Like when you stuff a little chocolate? You like make a shell, you create a ganache, then you cap it, then you decorate it. I love that. It's a process. You could get into jam. I could. People are really into jam. I know.

• 9:47Dax Shepard?

Not with the soccer schedule I just learned about.

• 9:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:49Dax Shepard?

You're not gonna do a damn thing other than travel for soccer.

• 9:52Speaker 02

I wanna have a lake house. I wanna be that Americana lake house person. And my kid's travel soccer schedule is real intense.

• 10:01Dax Shepard?

Now, I don't wanna be a dick, Reese.

• 10:03Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 10:03Dax Shepard?

But is there any part of you, when you see that, because you just told me it's like a 32 week schedule?

• 10:07Speaker 02

Parents are gonna relate. Oh, yeah.

• 10:09Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, and that's too much.

• 10:10Speaker 02

There's collective outrage. Yeah, why is it like that?

• 10:13Dax Shepard?

That's 65% of the year, which is too much to be doing anything, for starters. Is there any part of you that's like, are we gonna try to go professional? Because if not, this seems really excessive.

• 10:25Speaker 02

I understand what you're saying. I see where you're going. Like, does my kid have an opportunity to be like D1 in college?

• 10:31Dax Shepard?

  There we go.

• 10:32Speaker 02

  D3.

• 10:32Dax Shepard?

  Fuck it, D6.

• 10:33Speaker 02

Any way in. No clue, but let me tell you how smart my kid is. His EQ is off the charts. He goes, you know, Mom, how old were you when you did your first movie?

• 10:41Dax Shepard?

  He did his research.

• 10:43Speaker 02

  14. He's like, I'm 13. Soccer is acting for me. Did your mom take you to acting classes? I was like, yes. He was like, how many? I was like, two or three a week.

• 10:53Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay.

• 10:54Speaker 02

And I was like, that's your dream, buddy. I get it. But then, did you show him your net worth? And you're like, is soccer gonna get you this? Listen.

• 11:01Dax Shepard?

  Did you do that?

• 11:02Speaker 02

You know what? You could have done that. Cristiano Ronaldo is doing a lot better than me. I'm just letting you know.

• 11:06Dax Shepard?

I just read today that he's got a billion dollars. This morning I read it.

• 11:09Speaker 02

He's doing, he's doing better than me. Okay, all right, that's fair.

• 11:12Dax Shepard?

He had the moral high ground on this debate. I'm gonna start with how excited I am that you're here. Genuinely, do you know, I was on a 7 a.m. flight this morning to Nashville.

• 11:22Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 11:23Dax Shepard?

Which is now my spiritual headquarters.

• 11:25Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 11:25Dax Shepard?

I cannot be there enough. And I'm taking a motorcycle trip out of Nashville and riding for some days. And Monica's like, hey, Reese's available this day. And I was like, oh. I'm going to Nashville with Aaron.

• 11:37Speaker 01

  I said, no, you're not.

• 11:39Dax Shepard?

And I'm gonna be dead honest with you. You're probably among maybe three people I was willing to change my flight for.

• 11:44Speaker 01

  Oh, thank you.

• 11:44Dax Shepard?

Yes, that's how excited I am to have you.

• 11:46Speaker 01

Dude, we should have done this in Nashville. We should have had Monica come with us. I did think that. That would have been plan B. But it's fun to have you here. This is our sanctuary.

• 11:55Speaker 02

  I know, I love it.

• 11:56Dax Shepard?

I wanted to do Nashville. That would have been really fun, actually. Did you see the whole little setup in the barn?

• 12:01Speaker 02

It looks like this, but like blue, maybe?

• 12:03Speaker 01

  Yes, correct.

• 12:04Dax Shepard?

Is that what color it is?

• 12:05Speaker 01

  Yes, good job.

• 12:05Speaker 02

  I mean, I was impressed.

• 12:07Speaker 01

  Rob did all.

• 12:07Dax Shepard?

Rob did the whole thing and he did it in five minutes.

• 12:09Speaker 01

  That's amazing.

• 12:10Dax Shepard?

You should try to steal Rob from us. If I were you, I would make a play.

• 12:14Speaker 02

  We've been talking.

• 12:15Dax Shepard?

Okay, so Reese, you're born in New Orleans, but you do grow up in Nashville, yeah?

• 12:20Speaker 02

My dad was in the military, so I was born in New Orleans, so we moved to Germany. And I grew up on a military base in Wiesbaden, Germany.

• 12:27Dax Shepard?

  To what age?

• 12:28Speaker 02

  Five.

• 12:28Dax Shepard?

Do you have any memories of that?

• 12:29Speaker 02

Yes, I went to German school. I spoke German.

• 12:31Dax Shepard?

  You did?

• 12:32Speaker 02

And I spoke Spanish and I spoke English, obviously.

• 12:36Dax Shepard?

  Did you retain any German?

• 12:37Speaker 02

No, but a lot of Spanish. And then language, I think because I was exposed so young, is not hard for me.

• 12:44Dax Shepard?

  There's no what?

• 12:45Speaker 01

  That's so lucky.

• 12:45Speaker 02

I just don't feel intimidated by it.

• 12:47Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 12:48Speaker 02

I'll throw myself out with some bad Spanish, some really rusty high school French.

• 12:53Dax Shepard?

When you travel in Europe, do you try to?

• 12:56Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 12:56Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and do your kids go like, oh my God, you're just fucking speaking English?

• 13:00Speaker 02

  Please.

• 13:01Speaker 01

No, I think the locals appreciate the trying. If you just go and you're just speaking English, I don't think they like that.

• 13:08Dax Shepard?

I disagree. If they speak English at a nine and you speak Spanish at a two, it is very inefficient for them to get through your two Spanish. They're like, guys, let's just do it. I do English very well. Let's just do that.

• 13:20Speaker 01

  That's true.

• 13:21Dax Shepard?

  Right?

• 13:22Speaker 02

  It's selfish.

• 13:23Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I don't wanna be the thing you practice on.

• 13:25Speaker 02

But if you do it joyfully and like laugh at yourself.

• 13:28Dax Shepard?

I like to do that too, to my wife's chagrin. I like to just find a few words and blurt them enthusiastically, as were in other countries. Buonissimo! That's not even a word in Italy, but that was a word I thought.

• 13:40Speaker 02

I speak Italian, but I only say, capisco solo poco italiano. But that doesn't mean anything, apparently.

• 13:46Dax Shepard?

  It doesn't. The Italiano must.

• 13:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:48Dax Shepard?

I just know pronto and ciao.

• 13:50Speaker 02

  Pronto, ciao.

• 13:51Dax Shepard?

Cause when they pick up the phone, pronto, ciao bello.

• 13:53Speaker 02

  It's just fun.

• 13:54Dax Shepard?

I know, I love it too.

• 13:55Speaker 02

I took my son on a solo vacation, just mom and kid to Italy this summer and we had the best time. We were joking around. He learned Italian on Duolingo and he just went hard at it. It was so fun.

• 14:09Dax Shepard?

Yeah, those trips are so fun, just the two of you.

• 14:12Speaker 02

And literally we did almost nothing. We just ate pasta and jumped in the ocean and we just laughed.

• 14:17Dax Shepard?

Were you binging a show together by chance?

• 14:20Speaker 02

  Okay, yes.

• 14:20Dax Shepard?

Cause I did the same trip with Lincoln last year to Portugal to go see Taylor Swift.

• 14:24Speaker 02

  Oh my god.

• 14:25Dax Shepard?

And we stayed at a great hotel and we had room service and then we were binging the Kristen Wiig show, Home Royale, perfect show for us. And then we rented a motorcycle and we ripped around the city. And I got home and I said to Kristen, I'm like, that might be the best trip I've taken with a woman anywhere, ever in my whole life. I think that was the best one.

• 14:41Speaker 02

Totally. Does she love your jokes? And you guys are just so simpatico?

• 14:45Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 14:46Speaker 02

Both my sons and my daughter. I've had great opportunities to take each one of them on solo vacations. It's really fun.

• 14:52Dax Shepard?

The whole time I was doing it, I was like, you know, she's doing this now, but this is a closing window. I gotta do this now. It's not like when she's 19, she's gonna be like, yeah, dad, let's go get on a scooter and rip around Lisbon.

• 15:04Speaker 02

  She might be.

• 15:05Dax Shepard?

  I mean, fingers crossed.

• 15:07Speaker 01

Is this where you jumped off the cliff?

• 15:09Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 15:09Speaker 01

Oh, that looked so scary. She jumped off a cliff.

• 15:13Dax Shepard?

That would not have been for you.

• 15:13Speaker 01

No, I would not. I would have passed on jumping off the cliff. Too scary.

• 15:19Dax Shepard?

  But you had to.

• 15:19Speaker 01

  I was impressed.

• 15:20Dax Shepard?

  Cause your son.

• 15:21Speaker 02

I feel like if any of your kids go, I'll do it if you do it, what am I gonna do? Say, my mom didn't do it and I did.

• 15:27Dax Shepard?

  I agree.

• 15:28Speaker 02

  I have to.

• 15:28Dax Shepard?

  I'd rather be dead.

• 15:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:30Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 15:30Speaker 02

That's jet skiing, that is water skiing, that is jumping off cliffs, that is snow skiing.

• 15:37Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I just pray my daughters don't want to start doing paragliding or something.

• 15:40Speaker 02

  I'll do it.

• 15:41Speaker 01

Wow, this is surprising, cause you strike me as someone who would not do something they didn't want to do.

• 15:46Speaker 02

  Not cautious.

• 15:47Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 15:47Dax Shepard?

Have you sustained any injuries due to this lack of caution?

• 15:50Speaker 02

This is kinda crazy, you guys. My girlfriend was dating an NFL player and she brought him over for dinner and whatever, he was talking about, you know, CTE and serious. Stuff and she's an actress and I'm an actress and we both started talking about the amount of concussions we've had.

• 16:04Dax Shepard?

  On set.

• 16:05Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 16:06Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 16:07Speaker 02

Let's not even talk about what predates set. It was like my rough and tumble childhood with my big brother. He was like, you do it first, sister. I'll do it second. That's where it comes from.

• 16:17Dax Shepard?

  Oh, your little sister.

• 16:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:19Dax Shepard?

  That says a lot.

• 16:20Speaker 02

I had probably like three pretty big concussions as a kid and then on set, probably three or four.

• 16:26Dax Shepard?

And just really quick, ironically, your father's a head and neck.

• 16:30Speaker 02

Oh, he's an ear, nose and throat.

• 16:31Dax Shepard?

  Oh, he's an ENT.

• 16:33Speaker 02

So I take back your research comment.

• 16:35Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Well, I'm gonna sue Wikipedia because it said he was a head and neck.

• 16:40Speaker 02

No, he's not a head and neck. He's ear, nose and throat. So he would work on people's vocal cords in Nashville.

• 16:44Dax Shepard?

Okay, but back to Germany. What were the German memories? Like what pops out?

• 16:49Speaker 02

Going to German Montessori school. It was a really great environment for learning and discovery. And then every Saturday morning, my mom would give us a dollar and we could walk down to the German candy store and buy gummy bears. Ooh. She was a nurse. This is confusing and not interesting, but she was a nurse in New Orleans. When we went away to Germany, she didn't work, but she was like so bored around the house. So she did one day a week at a Wedgewood china shop. Like selling it? Selling china. Wow. Yeah. And then when we came back to America in 1981, she went back to nursing.

• 17:25Dax Shepard?

  She has a doctorate degree.

• 17:26Speaker 02

She's a doctor. She taught nursing at Tennessee State University.

• 17:30Dax Shepard?

  Pediatric nursing?

• 17:31Speaker 02

  Pediatric, yeah.

• 17:32Dax Shepard?

Okay, one of them was right.

• 17:33Speaker 02

Yeah, she taught at Tennessee State University and then she was a labor and delivery nurse at Vanderbilt.

• 17:38Dax Shepard?

Whose personality do you have more? Mom or dad?

• 17:42Speaker 02

I think I'm a really interesting blend of the two because my mom is just pure happiness and joy. Just Mrs. Santa Claus, happy and loves children, animals. And then my dad is more academic and very nerdy and studies.

• 17:58Dax Shepard?

And living in his head a bit?

• 17:59Speaker 02

Serious. Yes. My dad is one of those people who's so smart. He got perfect score on his SATs, perfect score on his MCATs. He graduated with honors from Yale.

• 18:09Dax Shepard?

Why'd he go the military route?

• 18:11Speaker 02

Couldn't afford to pay for medical school.

• 18:13Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 18:13Speaker 02

Also, it was the time when men were getting drafted. He got drafted, but he deferred because he had to finish medical school. And then he signed up for seven years and the GI Bill paid for med school. My grandparents didn't have enough money to pay for Yale and for med school. So he got it all paid for.

• 18:29Dax Shepard?

That's great. And so after Germany, then you moved to Nashville?

• 18:32Speaker 02

  Then we moved to Nashville.

• 18:34Dax Shepard?

And he was gonna go specifically to work on singers?

• 18:37Speaker 02

Well, I think he was trying to figure out what kind of specialty he was gonna do. But he developed that idea in Germany. And he thought, that's a good practice to get in in Nashville.

• 18:47Dax Shepard?

Did he have any famous clients? Did he work on Waylon Jennings vocal cords? Or anyone that I'm obsessed with?

• 18:53Speaker 02

One of his clients is living and I can't say, but he'd like lose your mind. And I wasn't supposed to know, but she told me. She was like, you know, your dad fixed my vocal cords. I was like, what? But George Jones.

• 19:03Dax Shepard?

  Oh, George Jones.

• 19:04Speaker 02

  George Jones.

• 19:05Dax Shepard?

I bet his chords were a mess. It sounds like he goes after the real rough stuff.

• 19:09Speaker 02

I only remember this one time my dad got called, emergency Ozzy Osbourne had to do a concert in Nashville one night. My dad had to go to his hotel room to help him because he had vocal strain.

• 19:19Dax Shepard?

  No kidding?

• 19:20Speaker 02

He was like, I met Ozzy Osbourne last night.

• 19:24Dax Shepard?

  That's great.

• 19:25Speaker 02

He's kinda cool. So I would say very, very academic and intellectual and loved cars. I've spent every weekend of my life at either the gun and knife show.

• 19:35Dax Shepard?

Bill Goodman's gun and knife show?

• 19:37Speaker 02

By Cell Trade, don't you dare miss it, or NASCAR.

• 19:40Dax Shepard?

This is why you hated my station wagon.

• 19:41Speaker 02

No, I don't hate it. I don't hate it. I've just been on the side of the road with that thing that doesn't work.

• 19:46Dax Shepard?

  That's right.

• 19:46Speaker 02

And I just swore to myself I wouldn't live like that anymore. PTSD. We always had some variation of a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado.

• 19:56Dax Shepard?

  Lovely.

• 19:57Speaker 02

He had four of them when I was growing up and we were always on the side of the road fixing it. So, but we were always at a car show or a gun show or a knife show.

• 20:06Dax Shepard?

And did your brother take to all that stuff? Were they able to bond on that?

• 20:09Speaker 02

Loved. My brother can fix a Harley BMW. He could fix any of your cars.

• 20:13Dax Shepard?

We'll bring him over to the barn. I think he'll appreciate what was happening in there.

• 20:17Speaker 02

  He'll lose his chicken.

• 20:17Dax Shepard?

Okay, he'll lose his chicken. That's a new one for me.

• 20:20Speaker 02

Relax. You know what you're doing over here.

• 20:24Dax Shepard?

Is he a brainiac as well, your brother?

• 20:25Speaker 02

He's really, really smart engines and how things work. He can fix anything.

• 20:30Dax Shepard?

  Wow.

• 20:30Speaker 02

  H-bat, oh my, it's great, y'all.

• 20:32Speaker 01

  Wow, yeah, that's so nice.

• 20:34Dax Shepard?

Call him over to the house.

• 20:35Speaker 02

He fixes everything in my house.

• 20:37Dax Shepard?

That's useful. Okay, so going to school, who were you, Reese? What kind of kid? I know what's happened.

• 20:43Speaker 02

Okay, please, just fix my hair. I don't want to.

• 20:45Speaker 01

  I think it looks nice.

• 20:46Speaker 02

  Now I'm self-conscious.

• 20:47Dax Shepard?

No, no, you shouldn't be. I just got, I'm now nervous she's gonna say. I'm now reacting to that.

• 20:52Speaker 01

He did that to Jennifer Aniston's hair, too.

• 20:54Speaker 02

  Oh, my God.

• 20:55Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, funny enough.

• 20:56Speaker 02

  No.

• 20:57Dax Shepard?

I've only fixed hair like twice in the last week and a half.

• 21:00Speaker 01

I got so nervous when you went up to her hair. I was like, her hair, that's a scary thing to touch, but you did it.

• 21:06Dax Shepard?

Because it's like a national treasure.

• 21:07Speaker 02

Her hair is like insured by.

• 21:09Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 21:10Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 21:12Speaker 02

Exactly. It's like Guinness Book of World Records, Terry.

• 21:14Dax Shepard?

What if I would've went to touch Aniston's hair and then guys bust through the garage on rappel? Like, the security team came in.

• 21:21Speaker 01

  I was nervous for you.

• 21:23Speaker 02

  She does have good hair.

• 21:24Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 21:24Dax Shepard?

Okay, so what kind of kid were you?

• 21:27Speaker 02

Very academic, but also in my head, like fantasies and make believe. And I was a loner.

• 21:33Dax Shepard?

I was gonna say, yeah, were you popular?

• 21:35Speaker 02

I got popular in junior high and high school, but I was like, oh, I better learn to make friends.

• 21:41Dax Shepard?

And you joined the cheer team for that?

• 21:43Speaker 02

Yeah, I was a cheerleader for six years. That was really fun.

• 21:46Dax Shepard?

Were you lonely or you just preferred to be alone?

• 21:49Speaker 02

No, I wasn't lonely. I had these stories in my head. I was writing and creating. I always had a video camera, so I was the girl who was the yearbook girl, the videographer. And I'd be like, guys, this is gonna be so cool. We're gonna remember this moment forever. We gotta do a time capsule. We're gonna bury this in a box in my backyard.

• 22:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:07Speaker 02

  I was that person.

• 22:08Dax Shepard?

You were on fire to be on planet Earth and get it all done.

• 22:11Speaker 02

I was Diane Sawyer and I was investigative journalist.

• 22:14Speaker 01

You were a producer even back then.

• 22:16Speaker 02

  I was producing.

• 22:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:17Speaker 02

  And I didn't know I was producing.

• 22:19Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah. Okay, so you went to an all-girls high school, yeah?

• 22:22Speaker 02

  Yes, that I loved.

• 22:23Dax Shepard?

Right, so let's talk about the benefits of that, because I'm already seeing them very clearly displayed it. My daughter's all-girls school, which is, we went on that campus for the tour and I was like, my God, this is awesome. I've never seen so many outgoing girls that are just out loud, so confident. This was not my school experience. Immediately was like, oh, my God, I wanted to go here so bad. So that's kind of the upside. What were the upsides for you of that?

• 22:47Speaker 02

Growing up in the South is a historically kind of patriarchal place.

• 22:52Dax Shepard?

  Sure.

• 22:52Speaker 02

So it was important that there was this carved out place for us to express ourselves, to not have to present or be evaluated. The metrics for our success were not about popularity or being homecoming queen.

• 23:06Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 23:07Speaker 02

And that said, there was an aspect of that because we could participate at the boys' school, but it was opt-in, opt-out.

• 23:13Dax Shepard?

Yeah, who were you cheering for?

• 23:15Speaker 02

The boys' school, where my dad went, my brother went. But it wasn't like I was there all the time. I love community and groups of people and I love teams.

• 23:22Dax Shepard?

When I was reading about you a lot over the last few days, there's one little inconsistent thing with you by your own admission, which is you have this incredible confidence professionally and in business and running things and being a leader. And then you've admitted to having kind of a lack of confidence romantically young. When I read that, I'm like, that's incongruous with what I would expect.

• 23:45Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 23:45Dax Shepard?

But I do wonder, is that maybe the one price you pay for going to an all-girls school? You just kind of woke up with a lot of options, but you had no experience?

• 23:53Speaker 02

I have my own theories about it.

• 23:55Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I want to hear it.

• 23:56Speaker 02

I don't think it's about girls' school because I had lots of dates and I had really great, healthy relationships in high school. The transition to college was tough. I didn't have money to pay for college, so I had to work in the movie business and make money. And I was like constantly in this shuffle, am I a college student or am I trying to be an actor?

• 24:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 24:16Speaker 02

Because I thought it was going to be maybe a doctor. I thought acting was a hobby.

• 24:19Dax Shepard?

Had you only done Man in the Moon at that point?

• 24:22Speaker 02

I did Man in the Moon. I did this Disney movie. I did like Movies of the Week.

• 24:26Dax Shepard?

You weren't certain that that was going to be a viable career quite yet?

• 24:29Speaker 02

No, and I came from parents who were in the medical business. They were like, that's just a hobby to pay your bills.

• 24:35Dax Shepard?

Right. Yeah, that's what I was curious about because did they not think some of that stuff was vapid, like being in pageants and stuff?

• 24:40Speaker 02

  We didn't do pageant.

• 24:41Dax Shepard?

  What was the 10-state?

• 24:42Speaker 02

  Oh, that was mock trial.

• 24:44Dax Shepard?

Oh, it was a mock trial?

• 24:45Speaker 02

  I went mock trial.

• 24:46Dax Shepard?

  That's way different.

• 24:47Speaker 02

That's very small. Middle Tennessee Best Witness or something.

• 24:50Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay, okay.

• 24:52Speaker 02

  I was a belligerent witness.

• 24:53Dax Shepard?

  You are.

• 24:55Speaker 02

Which actually has shades of Legally Blonde. Oh, that's so true. I never even thought about it until now. Oh, that's funny.

• 25:02Dax Shepard?

Yeah, so you went to Stanford.

• 25:03Speaker 02

But it had immediately this like, I don't relate to anybody. It was a big culture shock. Everybody was in tech. It was early internet days. People were coding. I was like, what are you doing? I don't understand. And I was this artist and I was trying to make short films there. Maybe it's different environment now, but there weren't people starting film societies. There was me and this one kid, Brian. And me and the one kid, Brian, and this girl, Liz, that I like hijacked on my floor, who was in the psychology major. And I was like, let's write a movie. And Brian was like, yes. It was just three of us. I was like, this is not working.

• 25:38Dax Shepard?

Is Brian on top of the world somewhere? We've lost touch with Brian.

• 25:42Speaker 02

  Brian.

• 25:43Dax Shepard?

  Brian, we love you.

• 25:44Speaker 02

DM me, Brian. He was awesome. And I was like, you, me, we're out of here. We are way too cool.

• 25:50Dax Shepard?

Broad in the mix, too. We need the dark horse.

• 25:53Speaker 02

And I do remember him and I walking past the computer lab where everybody was like coding. I'm like, coding? What's that for? Oh, my God. Idiot.

• 26:01Dax Shepard?

Was your kiss in Man in the Moon your first real life kiss?

• 26:05Speaker 02

No, I kissed a boy in fifth grade at the roller skating rink.

• 26:08Dax Shepard?

  Wonderful.

• 26:09Speaker 02

  Picturesque.

• 26:10Dax Shepard?

What would you give yourself as a roller skater out of 10?

• 26:13Speaker 02

  Eight.

• 26:14Dax Shepard?

  Nice.

• 26:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:15Dax Shepard?

You could shoot the duck and go backwards and dance proficiently?

• 26:19Speaker 02

  I mean, slowly. Counts.

• 26:22Dax Shepard?

So how do we decide to leave Stanford?

• 26:25Speaker 02

Wait, wait, I want to hear Monica's take on why I had bad relationships in my twenties.

• 26:29Dax Shepard?

I didn't even hear your theory.

• 26:31Speaker 02

Yeah, we didn't hear. Well, no, I want to hear. Like, I'm open to any and all theories. I don't think it was girl school.

• 26:36Dax Shepard?

  Great. So what's your theory?

• 26:37Speaker 02

You're a girl dad. I think that this is important. Girl dads need to hear this. It's so, so important what you say to your daughters. You write on their mind with a Sharpie. It's not a dry erase board. So what you give them, the tools of self-confidence, self-worth, what they're looking for in a partner, what they want in their twenties versus their thirties. You get a lot of that from your dad. Yes, that is correct.

• 27:02Dax Shepard?

Okay, you'll be relieved to know my mantra since I've had them is, okay, they're gonna date me, so what am I gonna be that they go out and try to find?

• 27:10Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 27:11Dax Shepard?

So if they wanna talk to me, I gotta drop everything and like look in their eyes and listen to them and take them seriously.

• 27:17Speaker 02

  That's beautiful.

• 27:17Dax Shepard?

And give them my time because I want whoever they're with to drop every fucking thing.

• 27:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:22Dax Shepard?

  And listen to them.

• 27:22Speaker 02

Well, I like that you're emotionally vulnerable too. They learn a lot from parents who don't pretend to be perfect. Who also say, hey, look, I've had my issues, I've messed up, but what I am is consistent and that's what you need in your life. Somebody who cherishes you, loves you, doesn't harm you. I mean, it's that explicit.

• 27:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:41Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that's a really obvious point now that you bring it up.

• 27:44Speaker 01

  It's actually very poignant.

• 27:45Speaker 02

So Captain Obvious, I always say to people dating, you're looking for a 10, but are you a 10? Do your own, like,

• 27:53Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 27:53Speaker 02

  I got X one.

• 27:55Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 27:57Speaker 02

Are we really judging people on an appropriate spectrum? We want somebody who's extremely funny, completely self-made, not arrogant, but self-confident. He's gotta be funny, he's gonna be smart, he's gotta have a good job, he's gotta like his mom, he's gotta have a great family.

• 28:09Speaker 01

He's gotta be masculine but emotional. Yeah, it's a lot.

• 28:11Speaker 02

  What are we talking about?

• 28:12Speaker 01

  It's a lot. I know, it's too much.

• 28:14Dax Shepard?

  Good luck, everybody.

• 28:15Speaker 02

You're also gonna need to meet a human.

• 28:17Speaker 01

  Correct.

• 28:18Speaker 02

And he's gonna have to deal with your quirks and wrinkles.

• 28:21Dax Shepard?

I think the thing that's upside down, I think about this a lot in terms of Kristen and I, which is they wanna meet someone that's perfect for them. And if you were to do that somehow, which is not possible, the only trajectories down, they get less perfect. As opposed to I meet this person that's not perfect for me. They have a few things that I find irresistible. And then through this many years together, it just gets better and better and better and I like her more and more and more and she likes me more and more and we grow more towards each other. If you're trying to start at perfection, I'm not even sure where you're going. If you start with, yeah, this is pretty fucking good, I think we might be able to make this work. You're kind of on this wonderful journey upward. And I just think people have it a little backwards of what the trajectory is supposed to be.

• 29:04Speaker 02

No, that's so true because it's almost like you're making this relationship and it's a work in progress, right?

• 29:09Dax Shepard?

Yeah, cuz I'm a fucking work in progress. When she met me at 32, I, you know.

• 29:13Speaker 02

  Yeah, you're not fully cooked.

• 29:15Dax Shepard?

No, I'm still making pretty major mistakes. I'm fighting guys at stoplights and stuff. Like, I've got some growth ahead.

• 29:22Speaker 02

Yeah, and she's developing and growing and expanding. What do you think your girls should look for? Can you help out the ladies out there? Imagine your daughters were in their twenties. Let's just talk about twenties.

• 29:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 29:33Speaker 02

What characteristics in a 20 year old guy should they be looking for? In mid twenties, let's talk mid twenties.

• 29:42Dax Shepard?

I'm just will be projecting my stuff, right? So my mom was incredibly ambitious. She was on fire to devour the world. I cannot be with people who are not on fire to devour the world. It's just such a bone killer for me.

• 29:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 29:58Dax Shepard?

If my girls bring home a guy who's just on fire for something, I don't need him to be succeeding at it. But if he's pursuing something passionately and he has purpose, I think that's probably the most I would want. And then ideally, I would hope that they had had a really powerful mom. I think if you have a gangster mom, you probably are going to be able to let my daughters shine and not be threatened by that.

• 30:19Speaker 01

Yeah, I think that's the big thing is having a partner that allows you to be you.

• 30:24Speaker 02

  That's so true.

• 30:25Speaker 01

And not squash whatever shine you have.

• 30:28Speaker 02

Right now, there's a feeling of, I got this. I'm taking the world. I don't have to take crap from anybody. I'm gonna negotiate my own salary. I'm gonna start my own startup.

• 30:37Speaker 01

It's because of you. You're someone to look at.

• 30:40Speaker 02

I'm just gonna blame Taylor Swift.

• 30:41Dax Shepard?

But it is, it's a very confusing time for young people because all of the historical identities are being shaken up dramatically. And I don't think people know how to find their footing in that.

• 30:53Speaker 02

People also say men don't know where they fit in the diaspora.

• 30:56Dax Shepard?

God, no. I had a makeup artist in New York last year. She was super beautiful. She was probably like 35. She lived in Brooklyn. She was from Ohio. And I'm asking her how she likes Brooklyn. She goes, well, I like it, but I don't like it. I'm like, well, what don't you like about it? And I'm sensing something and I'm like, is it hard to meet guys here? And she goes, yeah, I cannot meet a guy here. And I'm looking at her and she's beautiful. And I go, are you telling me guys are not coming up to you when you go out to eat or go to a bar? She's like, no dude comes up to me or any of my friends anymore. And I'm like, okay, this system is really fucking broken.

• 31:32Speaker 02

  Something's wrong.

• 31:33Dax Shepard?

Dudes need to be going up to girls and asking for numbers.

• 31:35Speaker 02

Can I tell you, I have a theory about it?

• 31:37Dax Shepard?

  Please.

• 31:37Speaker 02

Okay. It all has to do with rom coms and sitcoms. Do you know how there's been like the past 10 years? I would even say past 15 years, this decline in the making of rom coms? Or like legitimate, big movie stars being in rom coms?

• 31:54Dax Shepard?

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert if you dare. This message is brought to you by Apple Pay. Bonnie, I can't believe it's almost the holidays. You know what that means, right?

• 32:07Speaker 01

I sure do. My annual holiday gift guide.

• 32:10Dax Shepard?

Yes, I love when you break out your gift suggestions.

• 32:13Speaker 01

You're a good steward of my, my holiday gift guide.

• 32:16Dax Shepard?

  I'm entirely reliant on it.

• 32:18Speaker 01

Well, I like doing it. I like picking out the perfect present. Like one of my more recent ones, this, I'll give it to you now ahead of time.

• 32:26Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 32:27Speaker 01

For your coffee lovers, okay? There's an amazing small batch roaster downtown.

• 32:32Dax Shepard?

The ones with those Ethiopian beans I'm obsessed with?

• 32:34Speaker 01

Yes, and they take Apple Pay right at the counter, which is so easy. So you just double click the side button on my iPhone, authenticate with Face ID, tap and pay. That easy.

• 32:44Dax Shepard?

Uh, what about for people who don't live locally?

• 32:46Speaker 01

Well, that's where the real fun starts. I found this artist who makes these custom star maps. Um, it shows the night sky from any special date. So you could do an anniversary or a birthday.

• 32:57Dax Shepard?

Uh huh, that sounds cool. But doesn't all this online shopping get tedious with the different websites?

• 33:02Speaker 01

Not at all. When I check out online, I click the Apple Pay button, authenticate on my Apple device and done. It's so easy. No lengthy checkout forms required.

• 33:12Dax Shepard?

Keep the suggestions coming. What else you got?

• 33:14Speaker 01

Okay, book lovers, ding ding ding. I personally love supporting local bookstores. They're also just so fun and you can go to their website. And then for crafty friends, there are these amazing do it yourself kits.

It's not just rom com movies, but I also think the rom com television show. The television show that you watched when you were 11, 12 and 13 that made you imagine and visualize dating skills. I like that girl. I'm gonna ask her out. Oh, what if she says no? Okay, well, my favorite character on the television show did that. Everybody Hates Chris. Chris asked out the hot girl and she said no. But the other girl, she really likes him and he can't tell. So I've been watching these shows with my 13 year old boy, like Goldberg's is a great show. Everybody Hates Chris, a great show. Young Sheldon is a great show. It's not just Young Sheldon. There's two other teenage characters who are dating. Shows like that where they're learning about relationship and romantic dynamics.

• 39:04Dax Shepard?

Well, and the thing that you pointed out that's the most important in there for a boy to hear is, oh, right, everyone's terrified. I'm so scared to ask a girl. And then you go like, yeah, you're gonna ask 25. It's a numbers game and someone's gonna say yes. Like someone needs to tell you, everyone's equally afraid of it and you just gotta do it.

• 39:18Speaker 02

And it's a muscle. It's kind of fun and you're in the game.

• 39:21Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 39:21Speaker 02

And then every once in a while you get a great friendship or I don't know what it is, but I do think these 10 to 15 years where the internet started, social media started and then we stopped, we started kind of going, rom coms are cringey, but it was actually where we learned social dynamics.

• 39:35Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 39:35Speaker 02

From Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

• 39:37Dax Shepard?

Talking on the phone. What dude can talk on the phone now? I don't think any kid can talk on the phone.

• 39:41Speaker 02

  Witty banter.

• 39:42Speaker 01

  Yeah. It was so fun.

• 39:44Speaker 02

  Make the first move.

• 39:45Speaker 01

  Yeah, I know.

• 39:46Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 39:47Speaker 01

But that's part of the thing. Women also have to not just sit and say like, well, no one's coming up to me if they see someone they like. We can't be like, I want to run the world and also you come up to me. We gotta do both.

• 39:59Speaker 02

  Okay, so do you?

• 40:00Speaker 01

  I don't do anything. I'm horrible.

• 40:03Speaker 02

  Are you single?

• 40:04Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 40:04Speaker 02

Okay, do you ask guys out?

• 40:06Speaker 01

  Nope.

• 40:06Speaker 02

So why, who are you talking? You're just preaching, girl. And you're not even taking your own advice.

• 40:11Speaker 01

That's why I can say it because I'm bad at this.

• 40:13Speaker 02

Okay, well, I'm gonna give you a job.

• 40:15Speaker 01

  A task?

• 40:15Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 40:16Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 40:17Speaker 02

In the next three months, I want you to ask out three different people.

• 40:20Dax Shepard?

  Wow, the Reese challenge.

• 40:23Speaker 02

And I'm gonna give you my phone number and you're gonna text me each time you did it.

• 40:26Dax Shepard?

Oh, wow. You have a life coach. I didn't expect you to get a life coach out of this.

• 40:30Speaker 01

  I'm so sweaty.

• 40:32Speaker 02

I'll give you a script if you want it.

• 40:33Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 40:34Speaker 02

I know this is a little forward. I've never done this before. I just noticed that you might be single, but I have noticed you a couple of times. And would you ever want to just get coffee with me?

• 40:42Dax Shepard?

Yeah. See, Reece, I've been giving her the same advice, but it didn't go down the same.

• 40:47Speaker 02

And now I'm giving it to you.

• 40:47Speaker 01

Yeah, now I have to take it.

• 40:49Speaker 02

  I'm gonna hold you accountable.

• 40:50Speaker 01

Wow, I will do it. I will do it.

• 40:53Speaker 02

I promise. I will do it. You're looking at me in the eye.

• 40:55Speaker 01

I know, and now I feel really trapped. I really do have to do it. We said it publicly.

• 40:59Speaker 02

You're gonna jump off the cliff, and you're gonna be okay?

• 41:02Dax Shepard?

Okay, I'm gonna hit you with, no, I'm gonna let you enjoy this.

• 41:05Speaker 01

This is very, this is a big deal. I know, I'm like, I feel really scared. The other day I was at a event, and there was a guy there, and he did start talking to me. And I was like, oh, he's cute. And then the event started, and I stepped aside, and I was like, I'm just gonna leave. I don't know, I don't, I don't know what's going on. I know, I know, I don't know. I have so many problems. I have so many problems. Maybe it's the thing you talked about. Maybe it's the permanent Sharpie. It's still there.

• 41:36Speaker 02

Well, I think you have to rewrite it yourself.

• 41:39Speaker 01

Well, I was gonna ask you that. I was like, did you get to the point?

• 41:42Speaker 02

We're gonna have to paint over it and rewrite the rules.

• 41:43Speaker 01

  And you did that.

• 41:44Speaker 02

I had massive amounts of therapy.

• 41:46Speaker 01

  And you were able to.

• 41:46Speaker 02

And it really helped. I had a great therapist.

• 41:49Speaker 01

I do have a great therapist.

• 41:50Speaker 02

  That's good.

• 41:51Dax Shepard?

All right, I'm gonna hit you with a couple more dynamics. So I think the ram come one is really good. Here's what I think. You have a lot of these societal problems. Men, historically, will date hierarchical socio-economically, status. They will date laterally to themselves and below. They got no problem. You see guys all the time, an attractive woman, she didn't get out of high school, he doesn't give a fuck. Doesn't make any money, he's there. And they can do that because historically, men grew up looking at their mother who didn't work, but they loved their mother blindly. The ladies grew up looking at their dad who was out working and being a breadwinner. So unfortunately, women, this is statistically, this is in my opinion, this is the data.

• 42:35Dax Shepard?

Women like to date laterally or above.

• 42:38Speaker 01

  Financially.

• 42:39Dax Shepard?

Financially, status wise, everything. Now, there's this huge shift happening with boys and girls, which is girls are going to college at 63% to boys 37. So if you have a system where women are only going to date above themselves, but they are above all of the dating pool, we're fucked. Everything's got to evolve. Now, I think what's going to help a little bit is increasingly, there'll be lots of girls who grew up with dads who are stay at home dads. They'll inherit the thing that many boys my age inherited. And rightly so, women got sick of being hit on by shitty fucking dudes who were bothering girls out of their league. That was a good complaint. But guess what? If you don't want that shit to happen, then you gotta start hitting on guys.

• 43:23Dax Shepard?

If we're going to evolve, everyone's got to pick up their end of where the seesaw goes. So it's like, yeah, dudes need to lay off women and employees and people out of their league and not harass people. They should still go up to girls and ask for their number, but girls got to pick up that big hole in this system, which is someone's got to have somebody out.

• 43:44Speaker 01

Or we're not going to have grandkids.

• 43:45Dax Shepard?

If girls and women are going to have all the money, status and positions, then they got to start being willing to get with dudes who make 30 grand a year. These are all things that have to happen to counteract the things that I do agree with and sign on to.

• 43:59Speaker 01

Right. The dudes, if they make 30,000 a year, they have to be okay with the woman making more and having a lot. And that's where there's still a discrepancy.

• 44:09Dax Shepard?

That's their work to do. And again, I do think as these future generations are being exposed to a family dynamic where it's like that didn't make what mom did. Mom was the breadwinner. Mom was away on business. You know, then the dude's not going to have as much problem when he meets a woman that has that similar passion. Then the same way, that was the gift my mom gave me. My brother's the same way. My brother likes gangster women and that's how it is.

• 44:31Speaker 01

  Great. Is he single?

• 44:33Dax Shepard?

  He's married for 30 years.

• 44:35Speaker 01

  Yeah, three adult children.

• 44:39Dax Shepard?

  Uh, 55.

• 44:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's a big gap.

• 44:43Dax Shepard?

You've got a few strikes against someone, I should say. Okay, I'm gonna talk about your career for a second. Fear and Freeway, right out of the gates. How do we get those years at Stanford?

• 44:52Speaker 02

I was a senior in high school. I graduated and I went and did Fear. I took a gap year. And then I think during that year, I made Freeway as well. And Freeway changed my whole life.

• 45:02Dax Shepard?

  In many ways, right?

• 45:03Speaker 02

  Fear did not.

• 45:04Dax Shepard?

Because you were terrified that you couldn't pull that off. It gave you some confidence.

• 45:09Speaker 02

Well, Freeway, it's a take on Little Red Riding Hood. And I'm Little Red Riding Hood and Kiefer Sutherland is the Big Bad Wolf. And it's a sort of fantastical satire. Her mom's a drug addict.

• 45:19Dax Shepard?

  It's very 1996.

• 45:20Speaker 02

  Very fringe of a society.

• 45:22Dax Shepard?

But at the time, we had like Natural Born Killer. We had California. Like, that was the vibe then.

• 45:26Speaker 02

Oliver Stone produced it. Does that say it all?

• 45:28Dax Shepard?

  Perfect.

• 45:28Speaker 02

Yes, okay, yeah. So I got chosen to do that part. I had played this little redneck girl who has this rural country attitude and she shoots Kiefer Sutherland 100 times. And it played at Sundance. And I thought it was the most serious drama of my life, playing this character. And people laughed their asses off. Oh. People were like, oh my God, this is so funny. And so that's when I was like, oh, I'm funny?

• 45:53Dax Shepard?

You did not know prior to that?

• 45:54Speaker 02

  I didn't know I was funny.

• 45:55Dax Shepard?

Did you identify as being funny in your social groups?

• 45:58Speaker 02

  Well, now I am.

• 45:59Dax Shepard?

  Now you are.

• 46:00Speaker 02

Because I worked on it. I played straight really well. And I had this intensity about figuring out these really odd characters and playing them very straight. And not a blink of self-awareness in any of them.

• 46:12Dax Shepard?

Fear is fun or not fun? Is it fun?

• 46:14Speaker 02

It wasn't fun. But it made a lot of money.

• 46:16Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, it was very popular.

• 46:17Speaker 02

But then was that confusing? If you're like, the experience sucked, but it did well. No, I never wanted to do a movie where I played terrified ever again. Yeah. And I haven't since. I just don't do that well. That's not me, like, oh, God, what now? It's not my internal... I'm not here to play those characters. Yes.

• 46:34Dax Shepard?

Okay, so the thing I hate most in life is if anyone were to pity me. How do you feel about being pitied?

• 46:40Speaker 02

  Pitied?

• 46:41Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 46:41Speaker 02

  For what?

• 46:42Dax Shepard?

Well, to me, like, playing that character, I wouldn't like either. Because I don't want to be weak. I don't want to be scared. I don't want to be fragile.

• 46:50Speaker 02

I'm not any of those things and I have a plan. I have a backup plan and I have three more plans after that. Yeah. That's the kind of characters I play.

• 46:57Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Okay, when you do Election, do you have a sense... Because that's kind of early in the Alexander Payne world.

• 47:04Speaker 02

Mm-hmm. I felt myself turning into the character for a second.

• 47:08Dax Shepard?

  You went there right away?

• 47:09Speaker 02

My mouth started doing a weird thing, yeah. When you bring up the character, I can't. Alexander said his favorite thing is that I go.

• 47:16Dax Shepard?

  You're a rabbit.

• 47:19Speaker 01

  For the listener, a twitch.

• 47:20Dax Shepard?

Yeah, there was a mouth and nose twitch.

• 47:22Speaker 02

I had TMJ for two solid months afterwards because of how hard I clenched my teeth in that character.

• 47:30Speaker 02

And all she would do was wiggle her nose when she was mad.

• 47:36Speaker 02

I'm so angry, but I'm not going to show anybody.

• 47:39Dax Shepard?

But my nose betrays me sometimes. When you read this script, were you able to understand that it was going to be that?

• 47:46Speaker 02

Yes, and my boyfriend at the time told me, he was like, you have to watch Sis and Ruth because this guy's a genius. And that was Laura Dern. And if you haven't seen Sis and Ruth, just do yourself a favor. It is such a satire of living in America. And Ruth is a drug addict who gets pregnant. And then two sides of the whole abortion fight just fight over her and her unborn child. And I know that sounds very serious. It's deeply funny.

• 48:11Speaker 01

  I'm so excited.

• 48:11Dax Shepard?

It would remind you of, do you remember More Perfect? Did you ever listen to More Perfect? It was a spin off of Radiolab. Every episode's about a very historic Supreme Court decision that has been made. They give you the kind of history of the Supreme Court. It's fascinating.

• 48:24Speaker 01

  It's really good.

• 48:24Dax Shepard?

It's phenomenal. And it talks about so often the plaintiff that they're going to use to challenge some law in court. They're not a great plaintiff, right? They want to challenge this sodomy law in Texas. But the two guys that they're using, like, they're the worst. You know, they can't get these guys to show up.

• 48:41Speaker 01

It's just the opportunity to bring it to court, but it's like a crazy case.

• 48:45Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's like they're not showing up, they're hammered all the time. And he's like, I wasn't fucking. He was like, yes, you were, and you got to stick with this.

• 48:51Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's so funny.

• 48:52Dax Shepard?

So yes, the citizen Ruth is very much that. She becomes the mascot for people, and she's not a good mascot for either.

• 48:57Speaker 02

No, she is not, for either side. And then she like disappears and you're like, oh, and you find her huffing paint.

• 49:04Speaker 02

And Laura Dern is so perfect. But anyway, I saw that movie and I was like, oh, okay, now I understand tone. And I went in as the character to the audition, read the script, went in. Alexander was there and he said, hello. And I said, hello.

• 49:21Speaker 02

And he said, okay, would you like to read? I said, no, I'm not going to read today. I'm the perfect person for this part and you're either going to cast me or not, but that's up to you.

• 49:28Dax Shepard?

Oh, wow. You really took a big swing.

• 49:31Speaker 02

And he was like, what? I was like, it only makes sense. I'm the perfect person. I've always been born to play this part. And you're either going to cast me or not, but either win or you lose and it's up to you. And I was like, thank you. I left.

• 49:45Dax Shepard?

You didn't even read the sides. Oh my goodness. Wow. Had you run this game plan by anybody?

• 49:51Speaker 02

No, I did the whole thing in character with him.

• 49:53Dax Shepard?

  Oh my gosh.

• 49:54Speaker 02

And he was like, wow, I thought you were really amazing at Sundance. I was like, thank you so much. I really appreciate it. I worked very hard on that part.

• 50:02Dax Shepard?

  Wow.

• 50:03Speaker 02

I've never ever done that ever in my whole life, but it worked out.

• 50:06Dax Shepard?

Despite the TMJ, was it fun to play?

• 50:09Speaker 02

  Oh my God, so fun.

• 50:10Dax Shepard?

Because you're on hint. You're on hint. When you go crazy and you're tearing up the signs.

• 50:15Speaker 02

It was so fun and Alexander would come up with the most fun stuff. He'd be like rip the posters like you're an animal. He'd show me like Kurosawa movies, like the samurai warrior slicing through the enemy. And then I go into the bathroom afterwards, after I've torn down the posters and I look at my hands. And he's like, I want you to look at him like Lady Macbeth, like out, out damn spot. And like scrub your hands as hard as you possibly can. I was like, this is my favorite direction ever.

• 50:40Dax Shepard?

You're waiting for Tracy to just explode on screen.

• 50:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 50:43Dax Shepard?

She might blow up from all the tension she's holding.

• 50:44Speaker 02

And he's like, when you're watching Matthew Broderick count the votes, stalk him like a panther and go up to the door and look at it like you're a mom panther watching prey in the wild. It was the greatest direction ever.

• 50:58Dax Shepard?

That's incredible. The kind of twist on what you're expecting, which is you're calling the teacher you've had an affair with. He's a fucking pussy. People kept his fucking mouth shut. It's like the opposite of what the trope is.

• 51:10Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's so iconic.

• 51:13Dax Shepard?

  This chick's serious.

• 51:15Speaker 02

I know, when it came out, people were like, oh my god, she's a monster. And now, then A.O. Scott did this whole review of it five years ago. Maybe she wasn't. Exactly. She was a child who was groomed by her science teacher. I know. It's really shifted. It's so interesting. And Maddy Broderick's character is complicit.

• 51:33Dax Shepard?

  Sure, sure, sure.

• 51:34Speaker 02

Doesn't report it and goes, hey, don't fuck with my friend. I'm also going to destroy your life. It's so petty and human.

• 51:40Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes.

• 51:41Speaker 02

  We had so much fun.

• 51:42Dax Shepard?

Okay, now, I didn't know this. You hosted SNL, the very first episode back after 9/11.

• 51:49Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 51:49Dax Shepard?

How do you not try to get out of that? What was that whole experience?

• 51:53Speaker 02

I would give that zero stars. Do not recommend. The opposite of Citizen Hoop.

• 51:58Dax Shepard?

  Zero stars.

• 52:00Speaker 02

It was coming off Legally Blonde. I wasn't supposed to be the season opener. I was supposed to be the second episode. And the first episode, they canceled it because of 11.

• 52:09Dax Shepard?

  Obvious reasons.

• 52:09Speaker 02

Obvious. And then, Lorne Michaels called me and he said, I really need you to show up. I really, really need this. Rudy Giuliani is going to be here. All the firefighters are going to be here. Paul Simon is going to see. I just need you to come out and do something a little light and help America that we got to laugh again. We've got to get back the national spirit.

• 52:27Dax Shepard?

How old were you at the time?

• 52:28Speaker 02

23 or 24. Oh my god, the pressure. I also had a baby. I had a one-year-old. I was a new mom. I had this biggest movie come out that summer. But if you know me, if I tell you I'm going to do something, I mean, there has to be a real disaster for me not. Because that's part of my southern and military ethics.

• 52:47Dax Shepard?

  I would say 9/11.

• 52:48Speaker 02

I know. You mean a personal disaster.

• 52:51Dax Shepard?

  You need even bigger disaster.

• 52:53Speaker 02

Well, Lorne said, if you don't want to do it, it's okay.

• 52:55Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 52:56Speaker 02

  But you felt a responsibility.

• 52:58Dax Shepard?

Well, he said, if you want to quit.

• 52:59Speaker 02

Yeah. And I'm like, quit. Me?

• 53:03Dax Shepard?

If you want to be a quitter, no one will care.

• 53:05Speaker 02

Yeah, that's how it does sound. But we did it and it was good. And it was Amy Poehler's first show.

• 53:10Dax Shepard?

  Oh, really?

• 53:11Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 53:12Dax Shepard?

Well, I think we know that. I think we've talked to Seth and Amy about that, that their first shows were the first.

• 53:17Speaker 02

9/11. Oh, my God. Can you imagine?

• 53:20Dax Shepard?

  No, no.

• 53:21Speaker 02

  Crazy.

• 53:21Dax Shepard?

Talk about trial by fire. Was it out of body or were you present?

• 53:24Speaker 02

  No. Completely left my body.

• 53:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 53:27Speaker 02

And did not go again for 15 years. And it's not their show's fault. It was just too much responsibility for a 24 year old girl.

• 53:33Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Okay. Next thing is Walk the Line.

• 53:37Speaker 02

What about Cool Intention? You have so many.

• 53:38Dax Shepard?

I mean, I'm blown by Legally Blonde and two sequels. Mostly Walk the Line interests me a ton because of course I'm obsessed with June and Johnny. I was like everyone else. When you started singing in the movie, I was like, oh damn, she's gonna sing. She's gonna June Carter it. How terrified were you for that? Had you done any singing?

• 53:58Speaker 02

Growing up in Nashville, I did some singing training. I wanted to be a country music singer first.

• 54:02Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 54:03Speaker 02

And my mother let me take all these country music lessons and it was really fun. So I had done some vocal training. I went to this performing art camp for 13 year old kids in New York in the Catskills. So you would, at the very end, audition for a musical. You would do singing, dancing and acting. And then they gave you a report card, basically. And three experts would evaluate you. And they were like, your dancing can go on the shelf.

• 54:28Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 54:28Speaker 02

Right? We got better. We got better. And then your singing, it's okay, not great. Your acting's off the charts.

• 54:36Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 54:37Speaker 02

So you need to focus on that. And it was actually really helpful.

• 54:40Dax Shepard?

Because you could have been pursuing the wrong.

• 54:41Speaker 02

Yeah. So when James Mangold said, do you want to play June Carter? And I was like, sure, yeah. I mean, not the part where she's part of the Carter family. And he was like, no, no, I want you to sing. I want the thing for them not to be on stage and everything. I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa. Let me see if I can do it. And so I trained for five months. I did it every day. Then we recorded the album and Joaquin and that band worked so hard.

• 55:04Dax Shepard?

You were singing with Joaquin during these five months?

• 55:06Speaker 02

We were all in this one house, T-Bone Burnett's house, working every day.

• 55:10Dax Shepard?

  How fun was that?

• 55:11Speaker 02

  So fun and nerve wracking.

• 55:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, scary, but also fun.

• 55:14Speaker 02

  Yeah. Wow.

• 55:15Dax Shepard?

Okay, I know Joaquin a little bit. Sweetest, biggest human heart hanging out of his chest, kinda. Do you have that feeling about him as well?

• 55:22Speaker 02

  He was different then.

• 55:24Dax Shepard?

  He was.

• 55:24Speaker 02

But he's still a sweetheart. He was just in character.

• 55:28Dax Shepard?

  He was.

• 55:28Speaker 02

  The whole time, yeah.

• 55:29Dax Shepard?

And how do you deal with that?

• 55:30Speaker 02

You called him JR. You asked JR how the concert was last night. And you asked JR what he was doing last night.

• 55:38Dax Shepard?

It went really quick. Would he tell you a fake thing that happened last night? Or would he say what actually happened?

• 55:43Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 55:44Dax Shepard?

  JR went down to Arby's.

• 55:46Speaker 02

He would talk like that, yes.

• 55:47Dax Shepard?

What confuses me about it is, okay, so you're Daniel Day Lewis and you're playing Abe Lincoln. But you also have a wife back home and you call her on the phone and you're like, well, hold up. Does he call his wife and he's Abe Lincoln? But we're pretending Abe Lincoln lived in an era where there's cell phones? I get really confused.

• 56:01Speaker 02

You know how people do magical reality movies? You have to understand the rules of magic.

• 56:05Dax Shepard?

  That's what I'm asking for.

• 56:06Speaker 02

What are the rules of method acting? No clue.

• 56:09Dax Shepard?

That's what I wanna know. So when you're asking JR like, hey JR, what'd you do last night? And he's saying, I shot up my Cadillac. Are we in imagination world or did he shoot up his Cadillac last night?

• 56:20Speaker 02

  Imagination.

• 56:21Dax Shepard?

  Don't know.

• 56:21Speaker 02

Imagination. I know some things were true and then other things I don't know if were true or not true.

• 56:27Dax Shepard?

And then when he would ask you, did you feel compelled to act like you were June Cutter? Like, oh, I went to the...

• 56:31Speaker 02

  I'm sure he asked.

• 56:32Dax Shepard?

I went to the premiere of, uh, I'm trying to think what movie would have been out back then.

• 56:36Speaker 02

No. And also JR was in JR's world. I'm making this sound so crazy. And we talked every day and I would act like June towards him. So you know how June's sort of exhausted by him all the time? I'd be like, what'd you do last night, JR? I heard you were out with everybody in Memphis.

• 56:53Speaker 01

Oh, wow, okay, so you, yeah, you are playing in the world.

• 56:55Speaker 02

You better be careful, their daddies have shotguns. That's what I say stuff like that to them.

• 57:01Speaker 01

It probably helped. Method seems crazy, but I get why people do it.

• 57:05Dax Shepard?

  It worked. He's phenomenal.

• 57:07Speaker 02

Oh, my God, he's so good.

• 57:08Dax Shepard?

He's so good, it's impossible. You wanna just cry the whole time. But you too, though.

• 57:12Speaker 02

  I know.

• 57:12Dax Shepard?

When you get on stage and you let it rip, I wanted to scream. It was like a action set piece.

• 57:17Speaker 02

I have another theory. Ooh, we love your theories. I think women make movie stars. Women make male movie stars? Yes. If you respect the woman that is looking at this man like you hung the stars. You are the guy. You're him. The quality of the level of woman that is opposite of you is what makes Amanda movie star. Ah. I'm saying that in context with Walk Line because I remember I saw it when it was done. He was Joaquin then, and I called Walk and I go, dude, I make you look.

• 57:52Speaker 02

  And I was being funny.

• 57:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 57:54Speaker 02

But I just kind of mean it. You and I are really good together. And he was like, well, I'm not seeing it. I won't watch it.

• 58:01Speaker 02

I'm a sorry regular. Got it.

• 58:03Dax Shepard?

  I'm not Johnny anymore.

• 58:04Speaker 02

I saw it two years ago. We were shooting the shit. He goes, I finally saw the movie.

• 58:08Dax Shepard?

  He finally saw it.

• 58:09Speaker 02

You did? And he goes, yeah, Randy made me watch it. I was like, what'd you think? He goes, it made me look really good. Good. I love that. I love that theory.

• 58:18Dax Shepard?

Well, listen, you're so right, and it's even in real life. Why does America like me? Eighty-five percent of it is, oh, this woman we love and trust a lot loves him. All the scary stuff, the addiction and the motorcycle. Well, this very trusted source seems to think he's just fine and safe. I feel that way, too.

• 58:37Speaker 02

  Thank you for acknowledging that.

• 58:38Dax Shepard?

Oh, it's a thousand percent what's been going on. And then, by the way, I validate her in a weird way because for the people that are like, oh, she's a goody-goody and she's perfect. They're like, well, no, this scumbag's with her. She must have some naughty, you know?

• 58:49Speaker 02

You're trying to be funny, but you're not a scumbag.

• 58:50Dax Shepard?

This is really a dynamic that's happening, which we're both totally fine with.

• 58:54Speaker 02

  It's fantastic.

• 58:55Speaker 01

It also happens in day to day, I think in anyone's circles. If a woman who, yeah, you respect or like or think has high standards is dating someone.

• 59:05Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 59:06Speaker 01

Then you're like, oh, there's probably something to this guy.

• 59:09Dax Shepard?

It's the anointer from the status thing that we just see. A woman can anoint a man. And a man can anoint a woman.

• 59:15Speaker 02

So you guys had some expert on about status and anointing. Okay, so that's what I'm talking about. Titanic without Kate Winslet.

• 59:22Speaker 01

  Yeah, no.

• 59:23Speaker 02

Who doesn't like respect and admire Kate Winslet? And she comes in in that voice and she's like, my last words are about my love. I think it cemented him as one of the biggest movie stars of all time.

• 59:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:34Speaker 02

And look, he's very, very talented, but I'm just saying, there's a role for the way women. Make men seem on film.

• 59:44Dax Shepard?

  A thousand percent.

• 59:44Speaker 02

I love this theory. I think it's great.

• 59:46Dax Shepard?

  I think that's bulletproof.

• 59:47Speaker 02

Would you say some of these guys are maybe a little different off screen?

• 59:50Dax Shepard?

By the way, this is my complaint all the time when we're watching something, Kristen and I. I go, hold on, why is she with this guy?

• 59:57Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 59:58Dax Shepard?

Or why is he with this woman?

• 1:00:00Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 1:00:00Dax Shepard?

I've just lowered my assessment of him or her based on this fucking loser they're with.

• 1:00:06Speaker 02

And I think every movie star guy should really think hard about what makes you look young or virile or hot versus what makes you look substantive. And I think it goes for guys in the real world, too. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Does that make women make you look respectable or substantive or deep? Or does it make you look like your insecurity is hanging out?

• 1:00:24Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:25Speaker 02

  Yeah, maybe?

• 1:00:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:27Speaker 02

  It takes all kinds.

• 1:00:28Dax Shepard?

  I a thousand percent believe.

• 1:00:29Speaker 02

Sitting here casting judgment on men who date younger women. This is not a moratorium on what I think about dating. No, totally. I don't want to feel judgy.

• 1:00:37Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:38Speaker 02

It's not that. But I will say, like, I will leave a dinner party and go, that guy has a really cool wife. He must be pretty cool.

• 1:00:44Dax Shepard?

  Oh, a thousand percent.

• 1:00:46Speaker 02

  His wife is awesome.

• 1:00:47Dax Shepard?

Similarly, if you're a super high status, beautiful woman and your partner is an intellectual, I'm like, that's awesome. You had your pick of the litter and that was your pick? I'm doubling on you.

• 1:00:58Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, I agree.

• 1:00:59Dax Shepard?

  It goes all the directions.

• 1:01:00Speaker 02

Yeah, I think it's really smart. Can I ask you a question?

• 1:01:03Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:04Speaker 02

The last three podcasts I've done, people ask me a lot about dating and marriage and relationships. And I'm just so curious because every format that I listen to other people be interviewed, they don't ask them the same amount of stuff. Or is it just because I talk about it a lot?

• 1:01:17Dax Shepard?

Well, let's be clear and we're going to rewind the tape. I actually haven't asked you about dating. It has come up very naturally.

• 1:01:23Speaker 02

  Have I volunteered it?

• 1:01:24Dax Shepard?

Yes, because you brought up how a woman can validate a movie star, which then led quite naturally into in real life. Because I said, yeah, that has happened to me in real life with Kristen.

• 1:01:35Speaker 02

  Oh, I see.

• 1:01:35Dax Shepard?

And then we're talking about who do you date and what does that say about you? And then we're just here.

• 1:01:41Speaker 02

But then we talked about my early relationships and why is it because I went to girls.

• 1:01:45Dax Shepard?

But that was a confidence question.

• 1:01:46Speaker 02

I'm just saying, this is not calling you out or anything like that. I literally am curious. Yeah.

• 1:01:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:51Speaker 02

Because I did this interview with this podcast and then the next week they had on a very famous older actor. They did not ask him one thing about being a dad. They didn't ask him one thing about dating. Seventy-five percent of my questions were about being a mom. And I was like, is that most interesting? I mean, it is.

• 1:02:06Speaker 01

It's a part of your life. It's not everything, though.

• 1:02:09Speaker 02

I don't know, but are we more inclined to ask?

• 1:02:11Dax Shepard?

  A thousand percent.

• 1:02:12Speaker 02

And I don't have any problem talking about it. Do people ask you about being a dad?

• 1:02:16Dax Shepard?

No, they didn't ever. They're not interested.

• 1:02:19Speaker 02

See, I would like for you guys to ask more guys.

• 1:02:21Speaker 01

Well, we talk about it all the time.

• 1:02:24Dax Shepard?

If I get any heat, it's because I do talk to dudes about having kids all the time.

• 1:02:28Speaker 01

Good. And we talk to men about relationships. I think what is happening is the more open somebody is, the more we are wanting to talk about those more intimate conversations, like romance and dating and dads, all of these things.

• 1:02:45Speaker 02

And I guess historically, I've been through a lot and people know it.

• 1:02:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:02:48Speaker 02

I'm turning 50 this next year and people grew up with me. And it's a beautiful thing that they were like, okay, when she was 14, I was 14. There's this historical context where like, oh, I had a girlfriend and we broke up and she got divorced. So I fit in their timeline.

• 1:03:02Dax Shepard?

Yes. And can I tell you 100% what my intentions are? My curiosity about the lack of confidence in dating. I don't need to know who you dated. I don't want to know anything juicy. I want to know how you didn't have confidence in that. That's an interest of mine.

• 1:03:16Speaker 02

  How I didn't have confidence.

• 1:03:17Dax Shepard?

Yes, like that interests me. If anything I'm interested in about your public stuff is like, you played June Carter, and this is a woman who is like, I don't give a fuck if you think I'm nasty because I've had different husbands. You got to play this woman who owned it in a time which was much harder, I imagine, to own.

• 1:03:36Speaker 02

Yes, and there was a religious overlay, too.

• 1:03:38Dax Shepard?

Of course, and she's in Nashville. Like, there's a lot going on there. And so that's of great interest to me.

• 1:03:44Speaker 02

The religious judgment piece, too, is really interesting as I find a lot of women from the Southeast kind of challenging their ideas of happiness and what is acceptable, what is not, as social mores are changing. Their faith is still intact, but they want their faith to include. A more tolerant, accepting version of Christianity. Yeah.

• 1:04:07Dax Shepard?

This is great. And I wanted to do this more towards the end, but here we are. So I have loved so much the summer we spent in Nashville for so many different reasons. I've talked about it ad nauseam on here, but one thing is I've been here for 30 years. It has its values. Detroit had its values and its virtues. No one's got a monopoly on good things. Everything is trade offs. I met 60 people probably this summer, talked to them. I never once had one person tell me what they did for a living.

• 1:04:34Speaker 02

  I love that.

• 1:04:34Dax Shepard?

I fucking loved it. And then we get to a fun moment where it clashes for me. I'm out to eat with our two best friends there and I fucking love them. You know them now.

• 1:04:44Speaker 02

  I do.

• 1:04:44Dax Shepard?

She said it very kindly, but she's basically like, they're kind of shook with how our daughters will talk back to us or to anybody, because it's very unsouthern, right? Down there, everyone's like, hi, Ms. Kristen. Hi, Mr. Dax.

• 1:04:55Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:04:56Dax Shepard?

And there's value to that. There's something I appreciate about that. And she's like, yeah, your kids will let it rip. They seem to have no kind of respect, is what she was saying.

• 1:05:05Speaker 02

  Ooh, okay.

• 1:05:06Dax Shepard?

And feeling a little entitled. And I said, you're dead right. They do talk back and they are not respectful. I can understand where that seems completely unruly, but I want you to know what I'm prioritizing, which is when they're 19 and their boss is a fucking creep, I want them to talk back. I want them to be disrespectful. I want them to always advocate for themselves, whether I think they're right or wrong. And yeah, I'm willing to deal with this thing that is embarrassing at a restaurant for y'all, but I can deal with that. I can handle that because I want this other thing for them as women.

• 1:05:38Speaker 02

  Yeah, I understand.

• 1:05:39Dax Shepard?

And she was like, yeah, that's a pretty good point. Then we start exploring, yeah, there is a price to pay. So all these things are trade offs. And you're just trying to figure out like, where do I want to land in here? And what piece do I want to steal from what thing?

• 1:05:51Speaker 02

I think it's great that you're able to try something on, you know, try and assimilate to a different group of people. I don't have this overlay judgment of political assignment to good or bad.

• 1:06:03Dax Shepard?

Yes, same. But my question was, you have moved back to Nashville.

• 1:06:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:06:08Dax Shepard?

So what things, since you've landed, are you like, oh yeah, I miss this so much? And which part of you are like, oh, I've been somewhere else for a while. I'm like having to adjust to this.

• 1:06:17Speaker 02

A lot of different stuff. I enjoy it because I grew up there, so I know the backroads. I literally know the fastest way to get to anywhere.

• 1:06:23Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:06:23Speaker 02

I know where the good frozen yogurt shops are. I know where they make the best chocolate pie. So it's all those creature comforts of being in your hometown. I feel like the artistic sensibility there is open source. So if I know a great bass player, I'm going to tell you who they are. I'm going to have a singer songwriter and I, can you come and add on? It's not gatekeeping and closed doors.

• 1:06:44Dax Shepard?

  Super collaborative.

• 1:06:45Speaker 02

So I find as an artist, even though I'm not a musician and I don't participate in that part of it, I find for my artist friends that move there in the music world, they're like, oh my God, everybody's so welcoming.

• 1:06:57Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:06:58Speaker 02

And they'll be honest, like, I don't have time, but I can find somebody for you. And most people are just good people. Most people just put their pants on, go to work, pick up their kids, try and pay their bills. Everyone's suffering, but I just do feel like the temperature comes down there because the cost of living is so much lower, even though people there will be like, it's insane.

• 1:07:18Dax Shepard?

  And it's our fault, too.

• 1:07:19Speaker 02

  It's growing, yeah.

• 1:07:20Dax Shepard?

  Californians fault.

• 1:07:22Speaker 02

  It's actually you and Kristen.

• 1:07:24Dax Shepard?

  It's might be singularly us.

• 1:07:26Speaker 02

You're the tipping point. You keep promoting it.

• 1:07:28Dax Shepard?

Sorry. I talk about things I love.

• 1:07:30Speaker 02

The parts that are hard, I don't know.

• 1:07:32Dax Shepard?

  None.

• 1:07:33Speaker 02

Not really. Not for me. My whole family's there. It just makes my life easier.

• 1:07:38Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And how nice is it to have, for your youngest son, that network so present?

• 1:07:44Speaker 02

Really great. Two sets of grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins. And I think it's been really good for our family.

• 1:07:51Dax Shepard?

Okay, I want to talk about Gone Before Goodbye.

• 1:07:54Speaker 02

  Yay.

• 1:07:55Dax Shepard?

  You wrote a book.

• 1:07:56Speaker 02

  Yes, I wrote a book.

• 1:07:57Dax Shepard?

And you wrote it with Harlan Coben, who I was ignorant on. Do you know Harlan Coben?

• 1:08:01Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:08:02Dax Shepard?

International bestselling book, but has nine shows on Netflix.

• 1:08:05Speaker 02

  Oh, my God.

• 1:08:07Dax Shepard?

  Nine shows.

• 1:08:09Speaker 02

Including the number one last year called Fool Me Once. Oh, wow. He's this amazing prolific writer, but also the world's nicest human. He's a master at what he does, twists and turns. And I met him at a conference nine years ago. And I've just kind of been watching his work and all of a sudden I'm like, hey, I loved your Netflix show. Just stayed in touch. And his wife, she worked at Columbia in med school. She was the head of admissions and she's a pediatrician. And we just became friends and I had this idea about a female surgeon falling into this world of private wealth and private surgeries. And I called Harlan and I was like, I have kind of a crazy idea. And I pitched it to him and he was like, This is really good.

• 1:08:48Dax Shepard?

  Oh, good, good, good, good.

• 1:08:50Speaker 02

Yeah, so we wrote it together.

• 1:08:52Dax Shepard?

What's that process like? How do you write together?

• 1:08:55Speaker 02

I had about the first hundred pages in my mind already worked out and I had defined the character and everything. And then he helped me. I didn't know what was gonna happen in the middle and I didn't know how it was gonna end. And we just sat down and started brainstorming. So probably every other week, five hours.

• 1:09:09Dax Shepard?

You would get together in person?

• 1:09:11Speaker 02

Yeah. And then he'd write a chapter, send it to me. I'd say, she doesn't talk like this, she would talk like that. He kept saying she was hot. Like every person would say, she's so hot, you're hot, you're hot. I was like, why is everybody calling her hot? Why does that matter? Uh huh. So we got it down to one, like one person saying she was hot.

This episode is brought to you by ServiceNow. Look, I have my dream job. I get to talk to folks I admire like crazy and ask them virtually any question that I want to. I can't imagine a better way to spend my time. But even dream jobs have some not-so-dreamy parts, the stuff that gets in the way of the actual work. Now, that's where ServiceNow's AI specialists come in. They don't just tell you what you should do about your busy work, they actually do it, start to finish. Cases closed, requests handled, no extra work for you. So you and your team can focus on what matters most, which for me is, are they obsessed with male bodies on the same level as I am?

• 1:10:35Speaker 02

  They never are.

• 1:10:36Dax Shepard?

To learn how to put AI to work for people, visit ServiceNow.com. We get support from Instagram teen accounts. So we talk a lot on this show about how the world is different now than when we were growing up. And one of the biggest differences is obviously social media. And I think a lot of people wonder, okay, what's actually being done to make it safer for teenagers?

• 1:10:57Speaker 01

  Which is a fair question.

• 1:10:59Dax Shepard?

Yeah. So Instagram has got something called teen accounts and they come with automatic protections built in by default. So anyone between 13 and 17 is automatically placed into this experience. They get age appropriate content settings, contact limits, so that by default, only people they're already connected to can message them. And time management tools, daily time limit reminders, and also sleep mode that mutes notifications from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM.

• 1:11:25Speaker 01

  Sleep mode is genius.

• 1:11:26Dax Shepard?

Right? And here's the thing, for anyone under 16, a parent has to give permission to change any of those settings to be less strict. The guardrails are on and Instagram keeps building new safety features to create age appropriate experiences for teens.

• 1:11:42Speaker 01

I am really glad Instagram's helping to give parents peace of mind with teen accounts.

• 1:11:46Dax Shepard?

Learn more about teen accounts and Instagram's ongoing work to protect teens online at instagram.com/teenaccounts. We get support from SKIMS. So Monica just informed me that she's a girl's girl and I nodded like I knew exactly what that meant.

• 1:12:03Speaker 01

Yeah, but the girls who get it, they get it.

• 1:12:06Dax Shepard?

Okay, but for those of us who are clearly not girls, walk me through it.

• 1:12:09Speaker 01

Well, you know how much I love my SKIMS fleece joggers because the plush fleece is so soft. It's cozy. It's really comfortable without feeling too heavy. Well, I went to friend them and she would not stop talking about how comfy they were. She almost didn't give them back to me, which was upsetting, but I'm a girl's girl, so I let her have it.

• 1:12:26Dax Shepard?

  Great, great, great.

• 1:12:28Speaker 01

So the sleep sets are awesome because they are very soft and comfortable, but they're cute. If I'm in my sleep set, I feel fine about going down the street to pick up my food. I'm still looking cute, but I'm comfy and I'm cozy.

• 1:12:41Dax Shepard?

  Roger.

• 1:12:42Speaker 01

A really fun thing to do is if you're going on vacation with your girlfriends, to get matching SKIMS pajamas. I've done this with Callie and it is so fun. First of all, the pics are so cute, but also it's just fun and friendship.

• 1:12:54Dax Shepard?

So a girl's girl is looking out for your friends with better loungewear. I get it. Am I one of your girls now?

• 1:13:00Speaker 01

  You are.

• 1:13:02Speaker 02

You and the other girlies can shop my favorite loungewear and pajamas at skims.com. After you place your order, be sure to let them know we sent you. Select podcasts in the survey and be sure to select our show in the dropdown menu that follows.

• 1:13:20Dax Shepard?

Okay, so the book is following Maggie McCabe. And yeah, she was a military surgeon, not to dad.

• 1:13:27Speaker 02

  Like my dad.

• 1:13:28Dax Shepard?

Yes, but she has lost her medical license.

• 1:13:31Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:13:32Dax Shepard?

  She's in a bad situation.

• 1:13:33Speaker 02

She's in a bad way. She started taking some pills and got a little sideways during a surgery.

• 1:13:38Dax Shepard?

So she's kind of fucked because she can't do the things she's great at.

• 1:13:42Speaker 02

She's being sued for malpractice. She's lost her medical license. She's down on her luck and she gets approached at an event.

• 1:13:49Dax Shepard?

  From an old colleague?

• 1:13:50Speaker 02

Someone who knew her mother and says, I have an offer. He's a plastic surgeon. She said, if you come to New York, there's going to be somebody in another room and I'm going to look the other way if you want to take this offer. And so she gets hired to go to Russia to work on an oligarch and his girlfriend.

• 1:14:05Dax Shepard?

  Whoa.

• 1:14:06Speaker 02

Secretly. And she gets stuck in a crazy, almost Jason Bourne type world.

• 1:14:13Dax Shepard?

Yeah. But also, it's also believable, right? Because there are people with kind of unimaginable wealth around the world. Indiscretion is the number one value proposition.

• 1:14:24Speaker 02

Well, I interviewed a lot of surgeons that do this.

• 1:14:27Dax Shepard?

  Really?

• 1:14:27Speaker 02

And that was where a lot of the ideas came from because they work for NGOs. They go to Africa to work on people. They go to India.

• 1:14:35Dax Shepard?

  Starts in Africa.

• 1:14:36Speaker 02

Right. The world of private surgery is actually really happening. It's very real. Businessmen in China will pay. It actually started, I was reading a Reese's Book Club book, and in it was a Chinese businessman paying his way to the top of the donor list at UCSF. And I was like, does this happen? And I asked the author, she's like, that happens. Do people get transplants of organs in other countries? And you don't know where the organ came from? 100%.

• 1:15:03Dax Shepard?

  Of course.

• 1:15:04Speaker 02

So that's part of it. And then part of what was really fun too is I got to research longevity clinics in Dubai.

• 1:15:10Dax Shepard?

  Oh, in Dubai.

• 1:15:11Speaker 02

So I talked to some people who go there once a year. And there's the blood oxygen stuff. So I imagined a world where one of those longevity clinics kind of grafted with Doctors Without Borders and some unethical stuff started happening with refugees that we're treating.

• 1:15:27Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:15:28Speaker 02

You start to see it and it gets very complex.

• 1:15:30Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:15:31Speaker 02

And my character starts to uncover some really sinister stuff.

• 1:15:34Dax Shepard?

And you're also embroiled in this crazy opulent world.

• 1:15:37Speaker 02

Extreme wealth where the rules are off.

• 1:15:40Speaker 01

This sounds so intense and so specific.

• 1:15:43Speaker 02

  It was so fun, Monica.

• 1:15:44Speaker 01

Fun. But like you had, I'm sure do so much research to understand this world.

• 1:15:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:15:50Dax Shepard?

I've talked to a couple tattoo artists. They too find themselves in these crazy situations, these famous ones. Like, oh, I tattooed this sheik in a 747, just the two of us flying to wherever. Crazy kind of situations like that. Did you talk to anyone who had a insane, like, I did a facelift on a helicopter?

• 1:16:06Speaker 02

Yes, on a military plane, on someone who did not want his enemies to know he was under anesthesia.

• 1:16:12Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:16:14Speaker 02

  Crazy stuff.

• 1:16:15Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:16:16Speaker 02

There's an interesting biker thing, too. Her father-in-law is a biker and he comes in and his network of people across Europe comes, and that's a really important part of the third act.

• 1:16:25Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:16:26Speaker 02

So it reads kind of like a movie.

• 1:16:28Speaker 01

  Fun.

• 1:16:28Dax Shepard?

  Oh, big time.

• 1:16:28Speaker 02

  It's really fun.

• 1:16:29Dax Shepard?

And what's most fun about it, I listened to it.

• 1:16:32Speaker 02

  Oh, cool.

• 1:16:32Dax Shepard?

And you and Chris Pine, who I didn't even know you guys were friends, it makes sense you did that movie together. I thought I didn't like him.

• 1:16:38Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:16:39Dax Shepard?

I thought I didn't like him. He's a little shy or I also worked with him and I was really friendly to him and then I saw him in a bathroom. I was just like, yeah, that dude, that dude doesn't like me. I don't know if I like him.

• 1:16:47Speaker 02

Were you being sensitive? Were you being sensy pants?

• 1:16:49Dax Shepard?

I'm very sensitive, yeah. I'll be the first to make up a story.

• 1:16:53Speaker 02

Do you want people to come to you or would you prefer you go to them?

• 1:16:56Dax Shepard?

I'm happy with either. I was very engaging with him and he was, by my assessment, I was like, he wasn't interested. That's fine.

• 1:17:02Speaker 01

Frax needs a lot of approval.

• 1:17:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:04Speaker 01

So if he's not getting it back, something's, you know, triggered.

• 1:17:08Dax Shepard?

Then I go straight into like, I'll start writing a story.

• 1:17:11Speaker 01

  He doesn't like me.

• 1:17:11Dax Shepard?

Like, okay, so he hates me. Why does he hate me? You know, he's like trying to figure out like, were we ever, did I ever?

• 1:17:17Speaker 02

  There's so many assumptions.

• 1:17:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:18Speaker 02

Where is the four agreements? Is it on the show?

• 1:17:20Speaker 01

Oh, my friend was just telling me about it.

• 1:17:23Speaker 02

  Please.

• 1:17:24Dax Shepard?

All to say, we interviewed him and I completely fell in love with him. And then we went to the motorcycle track together and I.

• 1:17:30Speaker 02

  Oh, you did?

• 1:17:30Dax Shepard?

Yes, and now I. I adore him like crazy.

• 1:17:32Speaker 02

  Oh, good.

• 1:17:33Dax Shepard?

A lot of my favorite people are people I thought.

• 1:17:35Speaker 02

I love that. Look at you being open-minded to challenge your own assumptions.

• 1:17:38Dax Shepard?

It's the least I can do because I make so many. But you guys read the book.

• 1:17:43Speaker 02

Yes, he plays my husband. He's so good.

• 1:17:45Speaker 01

  Ooh.

• 1:17:46Dax Shepard?

He's so good. I mean, I don't want to bag on other. I listened to a ton of books on tape throughout the year. We don't really ever get A-list actors doing it. It's a significant bump in the experience.

• 1:17:57Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah, of course.

• 1:17:58Speaker 02

  Thank you for saying that.

• 1:17:58Dax Shepard?

Yes, it's like listening to like a great radio show from the 30s. Well, we have performers now doing this.

• 1:18:04Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:18:05Dax Shepard?

I'm sure you want people to buy the book and read it old fashioned, but I'm going to really recommend, do this book on audio. It's so fun that way.

• 1:18:11Speaker 02

I am so happy if anybody consumes it in any possible way. Graphic novel.

• 1:18:16Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:17Speaker 01

Are you so proud of yourself? Writing a book is a huge deal.

• 1:18:20Speaker 02

Thank you. I am really proud of myself because I was scared out of my mind.

• 1:18:23Speaker 01

  Yes, it's scary.

• 1:18:23Speaker 02

And I did it anyway. And I was like, I'm friends with so many authors and this is going to be so awkward. They're all been so lovely and even if they hate it, I say, tell me you love it because I can't handle it.

• 1:18:33Speaker 01

That's great. Just, just tell me you love it. But we had Jennifer Aniston on and we asked her.

• 1:18:39Speaker 02

  Was that this year?

• 1:18:39Speaker 01

  Like two weeks ago.

• 1:18:41Dax Shepard?

  It was two weeks ago.

• 1:18:41Speaker 01

And then we asked her how you two were different. And then we said, we're going to ask you. And we'll see how these compare.

• 1:18:48Speaker 02

Oh, my God. I'm like, what did Jen say about me?

• 1:18:51Speaker 01

  She said lovely stuff.

• 1:18:52Speaker 02

We've known each other so long and we are very different people.

• 1:18:55Dax Shepard?

But opposites attracted, you know, that it's a natural thing.

• 1:19:04Speaker 02

She's really warm and welcoming. She's like a big host. Come over. She's very warm and friendly. I think I'm more nerdy.

• 1:19:12Dax Shepard?

  She said you're Tracy Flick-like.

• 1:19:15Dax Shepard?

I'll just cut to the chase.

• 1:19:16Speaker 02

She said you're studious and you're a straight A student. I'm a straight A student. If there's a challenge, I'll take it, but hopefully I'm not so rigid. I used to be really rigid. I think my edges softened. Life does that to you. But Jen, I will say, I've known Jen 25. Five years, 26 years.

• 1:19:34Dax Shepard?

You had a little baby in your dressing room?

• 1:19:35Speaker 02

  I did.

• 1:19:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:37Speaker 02

She's always been really lovely and nurturing and warm and friendly and kind and has been through her own stuff. Oh, yeah. And also has reason to be a little guarded.

• 1:19:49Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:19:49Speaker 02

I've cried in one of our interviews. I was like, I just think people are so unfair sometimes that they think they know her and make assumptions.

• 1:19:56Dax Shepard?

Well, they want her to play a certain character they've designed and any deviation from that cannot be computed.

• 1:20:02Speaker 02

She's not who people think she is. She's not holding on to old things.

• 1:20:06Dax Shepard?

Right. She's not pining for Brad Pitt.

• 1:20:08Speaker 02

No, she's doing great. By the way, at her 50th birthday, one of the biggest testaments I can say to what a wonderful person she is. People from her teenage years, people from her twenties, people who work in her home. Every ex-husband, ex-boyfriend was there. Yeah. She just is like a high spiritual integrity person.

• 1:20:28Dax Shepard?

She's not a burner of bridges.

• 1:20:29Speaker 02

  Correct.

• 1:20:30Dax Shepard?

Are you a burner of bridges?

• 1:20:31Speaker 02

No, I have really good, clear pathways with people. Wasn't always like that because I didn't have the words in my rigidity and I'm softened. I've had a lot of shit happen to me. Yeah.

• 1:20:42Dax Shepard?

Do you think you suffered the most or people around you suffered the most when you were really strangleholding things?

• 1:20:48Speaker 02

I don't know. Probably me, but I never held grudges. I'm just not that person.

• 1:20:53Dax Shepard?

What I said to her and I'll say to you, the cool thing about the morning show to me is there's been a lot of different ways in which you and her have moved forward the possibilities for ladies. But one that still seemed to be not being addressed was, and the example I gave when we talked to her was somehow everyone was like, yeah, we can figure out how to get Brad Pitt, Clooney and Matt Damon in Ocean's Eleven. I mean, they're all going to get a fortune, but there was this kind of paradigm where it's like, there's one leading gal and there's only room for her and her paycheck and it's going to kill us to even give her what she's worth. There's no way we're giving in a second person. And I think that was like one of the other remaining doors that needed to be broken.

• 1:21:36Dax Shepard?

And I think it's pretty rad that you guys used your combined leverage to go like, no, this is bullshit. And I guess you had started it with Big Little Lies. It was like, no, no, me and Nicole Kidman are going to be in this.

• 1:21:46Speaker 02

Nicole and I decided to do that together.

• 1:21:48Dax Shepard?

You didn't meet on it. You had already been friends?

• 1:21:50Speaker 02

  No, we knew each other.

• 1:21:51Dax Shepard?

I must tell you, it was pretty funny from our point of view because you were looking at lake houses.

• 1:21:55Speaker 02

And I brought her with me.

• 1:21:56Dax Shepard?

And you were like, can we look at your house? And we're like, yeah, go crazy. We'll get it unlocked. And then the person we had said to on like, it's like, yeah, and then Nicole Kidman's over. And I go, yeah, it's like, it's all going down over there.

• 1:22:10Dax Shepard?

  Who's next?

• 1:22:10Speaker 02

She's my really good friend. And we're neighbors too. So we tootle and sometimes do errands together.

• 1:22:16Dax Shepard?

Well, it was very revealing. I'm like, this is so cute. You've driven 40 miles from your house to go look at our house. And somehow Nicole's also going to join you. And that's really telling of what friendship you have.

• 1:22:24Speaker 02

She and I just like tootle around together.

• 1:22:26Dax Shepard?

This is what you do in high school. Like, what are you doing? I don't know. I'm gonna go look at this thing. Sure, I'll come.

• 1:22:30Speaker 02

No, it's something girls do forever. Sometimes Laura Dern comes with us too. We all end up in the same place. Like Shailene and Zoe and Dern and I all just had dinner.

• 1:22:40Dax Shepard?

  Okay, good.

• 1:22:41Speaker 02

We just kind of reconnect and our kids join in too. We have a ton of girls and my son comes and there was a special alchemy on that show.

• 1:22:50Dax Shepard?

  On Big Little Lies.

• 1:22:51Speaker 02

Mm hmm. And it felt like a watershed moment too for women connecting over their deep, personal relationships and what women's conversations were really like in their inner lives.

• 1:23:01Dax Shepard?

Oh, I found the whole Nicole Kidman storyline. We just had Alexander Skarsgård.

• 1:23:05Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:23:06Dax Shepard?

By the way, I fell so in love with him. Oh.

• 1:23:08Speaker 02

  Oh, he's a babe. He's definitely a babe.

• 1:23:11Dax Shepard?

Captain playful on top of being gorgeous.

• 1:23:14Speaker 02

  Oh, my God, I know.

• 1:23:15Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that storyline, I was like, oh, wow. I've never been in that relationship, but I feel like that's the real version of it. I felt like I learned something. It felt so real.

• 1:23:25Speaker 02

  In Big Little Lies.

• 1:23:25Dax Shepard?

  The storyline between those two.

• 1:23:27Speaker 02

  Yeah, for sure.

• 1:23:28Dax Shepard?

I was like, oh, this is how it works. I see the trap of it.

• 1:23:31Speaker 02

Haven't you ever had a friend who suddenly goes through a breakup and says, hey, by the way, I want to share with you X, Y, Z dynamic that you had no idea?

• 1:23:39Dax Shepard?

I've never had that moment. A guy would never tell me that.

• 1:23:43Speaker 02

  Really?

• 1:23:44Dax Shepard?

No. If a guy told me he was beating up his girlfriend, I think he would know that would be a line for me. I would be judgmental.

• 1:23:50Speaker 02

Yeah, but he would say it in a different way. I lost control. I crossed the line.

• 1:23:54Dax Shepard?

And I'm like, yeah, my mom got beat, so you can go suck a dick. You can go get another friend. I'm sorry.

• 1:24:00Speaker 01

They're in denial, too. I don't think a lot of them think, oh, I need to reveal that I've done this bad thing. They've decided it's not a bad thing because you can't live like that.

• 1:24:08Dax Shepard?

But the complexity of the cycle I got, oh, this is a cycle. This is like a high and low. This is a dopamine deficit. This is sexual.

• 1:24:16Speaker 02

Is it? It's also like, is this sexy?

• 1:24:19Dax Shepard?

I bet those orgasms were bar none. I bet that's the height of that. I think that's what you're playing with and why it's heightened and then the lows are equal. And I was like, I get it. I didn't really even understand it, but it just felt so authentic. Where I was like, somebody got consulted and someone understands this.

• 1:24:34Speaker 02

That was interesting because that was like Nick and Alexander doing that together. The rest of us were in the biggest comedy of our lives. Like Dern and I were like killing it. I was like, Dern, I was blowing up my ad lits. My shit was so funny. And she goes, girl. I was like the momzilla yesterday. It was awesome. And then I was like, but I'm a little worried about tone. She's like, tell me more. Well, I talked to Nick.

• 1:24:58Dax Shepard?

I think some dark shit's happening.

• 1:24:59Speaker 02

Nick is like rocking in the corner and like can't speak. And I was like, are we on the same show?

• 1:25:06Dax Shepard?

I don't even know if this is gonna be on the same network at this point.

• 1:25:08Speaker 02

I know, but it worked. It really worked.

• 1:25:11Dax Shepard?

Okay, my final question for you is, because we're comparable ages.

• 1:25:14Speaker 02

Yes, you're invited to my 50th birthday party.

• 1:25:16Dax Shepard?

I can't wait to go. I'm a great attendee. I'll entertain lots of people. I heard you say acting's a little less interesting and for good reason, and I share that sentiment. Can you compute or do you entertain or fantasize? Is there a world in which you could devote yourself with passion to something that wasn't productive?

• 1:25:34Speaker 02

Well, I'm working on that. So I have a hobby and that's chocolate making.

• 1:25:38Speaker 01

  Oh, yes, Bob Bonds.

• 1:25:39Speaker 02

Every instinct in my body wants to try and turn it into a business.

• 1:25:42Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:42Speaker 02

  And it's just my hobby.

• 1:25:44Dax Shepard?

  Could you retire?

• 1:25:46Speaker 02

  What? Hold on.

• 1:25:50Speaker 02

  I'm 49.

• 1:25:51Dax Shepard?

Yeah, but you've been working since you were 14, so you kind of, you know.

• 1:25:54Speaker 02

Yeah, but I'm finding new outlets. So this writing a book, being a novelist, I could see myself doing this for a while. I have more stories in my head with this character.

• 1:26:04Dax Shepard?

Let me ask you this. Could you love yourself and have self-esteem if you weren't productive? Do you think you have to be productive?

• 1:26:09Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:26:10Dax Shepard?

So you and I need to go like get coffee and stuff.

• 1:26:12Speaker 02

  Maybe you could help.

• 1:26:13Dax Shepard?

Well, I'm wrestling with all the same stuff.

• 1:26:15Speaker 02

And I think it's an internal drive. Sometimes I'll stay in the shower as soon as I cry and go, wish I could turn it off.

• 1:26:22Dax Shepard?

That's my hunch. So if you just want to do it because you love it, Monica, let's go. I'm a cheerleader. If you have what I have, which is like, I have to be spectacular for you to love me.

• 1:26:33Speaker 02

  Hundred percent.

• 1:26:34Dax Shepard?

That needs addressing, right? Or at least I know for me, it needs addressing. And somehow, retirement, that's the challenge in some sense.

• 1:26:42Speaker 02

It is, and I'm working on it. I'm a work in progress on it. And now at least I'm seeing it. But you're right, it's tied to my self-worth. And I feel like sometimes people see the achiever a certain way, and it's really easy to judge. And I'm not saying like, boo hoo, I'm an achiever, because it's one of the socially acceptable vices.

• 1:27:00Dax Shepard?

Yes, yes. Because it is a fucking addiction, like all others. Yeah, you regulate your mood by this thing.

• 1:27:06Speaker 02

I recognize it, and I'm getting to a healthier place.

• 1:27:10Dax Shepard?

Okay, Reese, I adore you. We've been wanting you for so long.

• 1:27:14Speaker 02

  Thanks so much.

• 1:27:15Dax Shepard?

  I'm truly flattered.

• 1:27:16Speaker 02

  Longtime listener, first time guest.

• 1:27:18Dax Shepard?

I saved my compliment because I know it'll make you uncomfortable. I saved it for the very end.

• 1:27:21Speaker 02

  You're hot.

• 1:27:21Dax Shepard?

No. You're hot. And I asked Kristen if I could tell you this. So throughout our 18 years together, when she has had these big victories, and she shined, which she has so often, the go-to for me is always, I'm like, look at you, girl. You're fucking Reese Witherspoon.

• 1:27:42Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:27:44Dax Shepard?

Our whole relationship, every time she scores a touchdown, I'm like, girl, you're fucking becoming Reese Witherspoon and she's so flattered by it.

• 1:27:52Speaker 01

That is really a lovely compliment.

• 1:27:54Dax Shepard?

  And it's the truth.

• 1:27:55Speaker 01

  Thank you for saying that.

• 1:27:56Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:56Speaker 01

And I feel like one day I'll be Kristen Bell.

• 1:28:01Speaker 01

We're destined to be friends. I'm so glad it finally happened this year.

• 1:28:03Dax Shepard?

I like it. You're pursuing her. It's just, I like it about you.

• 1:28:06Speaker 01

We're stoking the little flames. We're being gentle with each other and kind of dancing around. We're like, do you like me? Do you like me? I don't know. Do you want to come to the opera?

• 1:28:14Dax Shepard?

  Do you want some bread?

• 1:28:15Speaker 01

Yeah, you want some bread? I'm like, okay, girl.

• 1:28:17Dax Shepard?

All right. Well, I adore you. Good luck. Everybody check out Gone Before Goodbye. I recommend listening to it. And then of course, season four of The Morning Show is on Apple Plus right now. Tune in before it ends. Binge it. Catch up. It's fantastic. There's a lot of drama. Reese, be well.

• 1:28:32Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 1:28:34Dax Shepard?

Stay tuned for the fact check so you can hear all the facts that were wrong.

• 1:28:43Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:28:44Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:28:44Dax Shepard?

Cute shirt and appropriately I have an update.

• 1:28:47Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:28:48Dax Shepard?

  Dodgers.

• 1:28:49Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:28:49Dax Shepard?

Yes. How long have you had that shirt?

• 1:28:52Speaker 01

Okay, I've had it for a long time and it's my first time wearing it.

• 1:28:55Dax Shepard?

  You've just been waiting.

• 1:28:57Speaker 01

  I keep forgetting.

• 1:28:58Dax Shepard?

Like if they get into the World Series a second time.

• 1:29:01Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 1:29:02Dax Shepard?

I'll bust out my Dodgers blue.

• 1:29:04Speaker 01

Well, you know, I, I have a lot of school spirit. And I am brand loyal.

• 1:29:12Speaker 01

And I am brand loyal to the Braves.

• 1:29:16Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:29:17Speaker 01

So that is my number one team.

• 1:29:20Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:29:21Speaker 01

  But.

• 1:29:22Dax Shepard?

I know people don't like this, but I like it.

• 1:29:24Speaker 01

Yeah, I feel like I'm allowed to have a number two team.

• 1:29:28Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:30Speaker 01

  Because this is my city.

• 1:29:32Dax Shepard?

I know. I mean, this gets into a much bigger, deeper philosophical conversation, which is like loyalty in general.

• 1:29:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:39Dax Shepard?

I'm sometimes on here saying, you know, I don't think loyalty should come at the expense of the truth.

• 1:29:45Speaker 01

  Yeah, you have.

• 1:29:46Dax Shepard?

Or honesty. I have some things.

• 1:29:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:48Dax Shepard?

Mostly my baggage from having to be loyal to adults that maybe didn't deserve loyalty.

• 1:29:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:53Dax Shepard?

But just unrelated to sports, car guys, they like to declare themselves. I'm a Chevy man. I'm a Ford guy. I'm a Mopar guy.

• 1:30:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:30:02Dax Shepard?

And so regularly I'll post a picture of one of my cars and I am loyal to horsepower.

• 1:30:08Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:30:08Dax Shepard?

  That's my allegiance.

• 1:30:09Speaker 01

  Exactly, yeah.

• 1:30:10Dax Shepard?

And so I'll post a picture of my 454, it says pickup truck, and the Mopar guys will be like, bow tie sucks.

• 1:30:17Speaker 01

  Oh shit.

• 1:30:18Dax Shepard?

You know, I'm like, guys, this is a radical truck and you know it.

• 1:30:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:30:21Dax Shepard?

And then I'll post a picture of my Mopar Hellcat. The bow tie guys are upset and then a Ford Raptor, they don't, so they don't like that idea. And I do that with motorcycles and cars and it's very disruptive.

• 1:30:31Speaker 01

I think it, yeah, it is, it is interesting and philosophical because I, when I hear that, I'm like, yeah, duh, like you should be able to like whatever car you like. But I have no, I have no feelings about cars, so it's easy for me to say that.

• 1:30:47Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:30:47Speaker 01

When I have feelings about things, I do, I do have a stronger reaction. Yeah.

• 1:30:55Dax Shepard?

Uh, yeah, so sports teams, I get hate because, I mean, the Red Wings are my team.

• 1:31:01Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:31:02Dax Shepard?

I grew up, they were the Bulls. I mean, they were just insanely good and they're my team.

• 1:31:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:31:07Dax Shepard?

But I fucking love a, a maple leaf sweatshirt. They're so good looking. That blue with the leaves on.

• 1:31:14Speaker 01

  Love the colors.

• 1:31:14Dax Shepard?

I'll wear that in a post and my Detroit friends are very upset.

• 1:31:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:31:19Dax Shepard?

And look, I like the Rams, but if it's between them and the Lions, it's, I'm going Lions. So I like, I like the, the Rams.

• 1:31:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:31:28Dax Shepard?

And I like many teams and then if they face each other, I will have a priority.

• 1:31:33Speaker 01

Yes, that's how I feel. I feel like I can definitely be a huge, huge, huge, huge Dodgers fan right now, which I am.

• 1:31:41Dax Shepard?

  The biggest.

• 1:31:42Speaker 01

The biggest. But if they were playing the Braves, sorry, I'm a Braves fan.

• 1:31:47Dax Shepard?

That's okay. See, my argument is that's okay. And in a world in which we think that in-group, out-group and tribalism is a, to cause for a lot of our current ailments.

• 1:31:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:31:57Dax Shepard?

I think a little less of this.

• 1:31:58Speaker 01

  Yeah, I agree.

• 1:31:59Dax Shepard?

Is probably better. Enjoy a lot of stuff.

• 1:32:02Speaker 01

You can enjoy a lot of stuff, but also be really loyal to.

• 1:32:08Speaker 01

Your teams and don't ever say roll tie. I mean, are the Maple Leaves, they're called the Maple Leaves?

• 1:32:14Dax Shepard?

  Toronto Maple Leaves.

• 1:32:15Speaker 01

Okay, also, that's like, sorry, it's just so Canadian.

• 1:32:18Dax Shepard?

  It's so Canadian, of course.

• 1:32:19Speaker 01

  It's so cute and Canadian.

• 1:32:21Dax Shepard?

And they must be among the Rob, what, the first five teams? Yeah, they're an original sixteen.

• 1:32:26Speaker 01

  Oh, wow. So.

• 1:32:27Dax Shepard?

And they hate that Detroit calls itself Hockey Town.

• 1:32:30Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 1:32:31Dax Shepard?

Because Detroit calls itself Hockey Town.

• 1:32:33Speaker 01

  Well.

• 1:32:33Dax Shepard?

And there's shit up all over the city, Hockey Town. And like Will Arnett, who's from Toronto, is like, you fucking Hockey Town.

• 1:32:40Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:32:41Dax Shepard?

You know, they're mad about it.

• 1:32:42Speaker 01

But that's because he is also very American. Cause like.

• 1:32:45Dax Shepard?

  No, he's Canadian.

• 1:32:46Speaker 01

I know, but I know, but like, that's his American side being like, oh, Hockey Town. Because what, you know, in our pod, Matt is Canadian and he has a bunch of friends who are Canadian and they're all on these chats and stuff.

• 1:33:00Dax Shepard?

  About the Blue Jays.

• 1:33:01Speaker 01

Exactly. And all of the Canadians are like, good job when we win. And then like, you know, Charlie's doing like a suck it memes, like gift to them. And they're like, no, we're happy for you guys.

• 1:33:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:33:16Speaker 01

And you know, it's just so, it is so American to be like, yes. And I, I definitely fall into that. I love winning.

• 1:33:23Dax Shepard?

Yeah. It's fun and just has to be kept within reason.

• 1:33:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:33:27Dax Shepard?

Because, okay, my updates were, I went to the Dodgers game last night.

• 1:33:30Speaker 01

You went to the World Series.

• 1:33:31Dax Shepard?

Game for the World Series. And my brother had just flown in an hour before and his, it's a bucket list for him to go to the World Series.

• 1:33:39Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:33:40Dax Shepard?

And then my sister Carly, as Rob will attest, is a baseball junkie.

• 1:33:44Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:33:45Dax Shepard?

  So I took those two.

• 1:33:46Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:33:46Dax Shepard?

And this type of game, and in fact, in all disclosure and transparency, was why I was there, which is when there's these big games, those teams like to have celebrities in the crowd for the television. They got more cutaways, it's a bigger event.

• 1:34:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:03Dax Shepard?

  So I got invited.

• 1:34:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:05Dax Shepard?

And that would anger people. I was thinking this whole thing through. Like, you know, there's someone sitting here that's like, that's such bullshit that that guy would get a free seat. When he's not even a hardcore fan.

• 1:34:15Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:34:15Dax Shepard?

And that's a very legitimate. Unless you're the Dodgers and you need cutaways.

• 1:34:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:20Dax Shepard?

And you're like, yeah, but I need cutaways.

• 1:34:22Speaker 01

It's all fine. People can be annoyed that.

• 1:34:24Dax Shepard?

I'm always defending my tall poppiness, you know, like I always have the argument prepared for when I get confronted.

• 1:34:29Speaker 01

Yes. I mean, I guess the question is like, what, you're gonna say no to go to a fun event?

• 1:34:34Dax Shepard?

Then it goes to me, like, why would I say no?

• 1:34:36Speaker 01

  Right, exactly.

• 1:34:37Dax Shepard?

Because I didn't go to every game.

• 1:34:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:38Dax Shepard?

And I am a fair weather fan. And there's another thing.

• 1:34:42Speaker 01

  You own it.

• 1:34:42Dax Shepard?

That's another thing, like, fair weather fans really anger really hardcore fans.

• 1:34:47Speaker 01

  But of course.

• 1:34:48Dax Shepard?

But why of course? I'll tell you why it shouldn't be of course. Fair weather fans are where the bulk of the viewership comes.

• 1:34:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:56Dax Shepard?

From, where the bulk of the money comes, where the bu- oh, we got a pitcher. Oh, good. I don't even have to blatantly name drop. That's a friend of the pod, Chris Pine. That's his buddy Tyler, who's smiling. He was a great guy. I talked to him a bunch.

• 1:35:10Speaker 01

  Fun.

• 1:35:11Dax Shepard?

And that's our most sexy member of suits.

• 1:35:13Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 1:35:15Dax Shepard?

And he's in all Toronto stuff and he's friends with Kevin Ziegers and he was there to support the Blue Jays. And I was thinking, what game is it safe? Like, this, this is safe. We're up one game.

• 1:35:27Speaker 01

  All right.

• 1:35:27Dax Shepard?

You're wearing all the Toronto stuff.

• 1:35:29Speaker 01

  Yeah, but it's scary.

• 1:35:30Dax Shepard?

But if it's game seven and we lose that game, you're walking out of the Dodger Stadium, which is known to get a little riffraffy. I'm, I was like, I'm going to have to walk with this guy tonight.

• 1:35:40Speaker 01

  You're gonna protect.

• 1:35:41Dax Shepard?

Given the, the outcome of the game.

• 1:35:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:35:43Dax Shepard?

  Because we lost pretty handedly.

• 1:35:45Speaker 01

  I understand.

• 1:35:46Dax Shepard?

  But this isn't, what?

• 1:35:49Speaker 01

Oh, no. Other friend of the pod.

• 1:35:50Dax Shepard?

These two were there. Flea and Brad Pitt. What a combo.

• 1:35:56Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:35:57Dax Shepard?

Now I'm upset, bro. Sorry, sorry. I thought. Everything was good until you showed me that picture.

• 1:36:02Speaker 01

I mean, I mean, do down compare.

• 1:36:06Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:36:07Speaker 01

  You're with beautiful Chris Pine.

• 1:36:09Dax Shepard?

So, this trip to the game was cute boy alert. I was coming in today to give a cute boy update.

• 1:36:17Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:36:18Dax Shepard?

Okay, so Patrick Adams is right there.

• 1:36:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:36:21Dax Shepard?

When he crossed and we chatted and I looked in his blue eyes and then he left, I said to Carly, wow, he delivers in real life, huh? And Carly was like, it's unbelievable. He's so gorgeous. And by the way, that was our second helping of it because on the walk in, Monica. I see a very fucking handsome guy, one of the most handsome guys I've ever seen in my life. It's Austin Butler.

• 1:36:44Speaker 01

  Oh, he is.

• 1:36:46Dax Shepard?

And I have this vague sense that we have, well, I know, cause Denofrey was staying at the house for a week and I know he just worked with him. So we were talking about him. He's like, he's a great fucking kid. So I had the balls to, as he turned, I immediately waved at him and then he immediately came over. We started talking.

• 1:37:02Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 1:37:03Dax Shepard?

He's so gorgeous in real life. It's insane. Carly was like.

• 1:37:07Speaker 01

I saw that Sunset Tower once.

• 1:37:08Dax Shepard?

  You did?

• 1:37:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:37:09Dax Shepard?

  And he delivers, right?

• 1:37:11Speaker 01

  Very.

• 1:37:11Dax Shepard?

  And he's a big boy.

• 1:37:12Speaker 01

  He's tall.

• 1:37:13Dax Shepard?

Yeah, he's tall and he's got wide shoulders. And then I saw today some, because he said, oh my God, we're both friends with Duffy. My friend Duffy, who was ding ding ding Brad Pitt's trainer, who clearly is now Austin's trainer.

• 1:37:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:37:26Dax Shepard?

And he's the Navy SEAL I always talk about.

• 1:37:27Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:37:28Dax Shepard?

So then we're talking about Bod. So then I looked up his Instagram today and he's got a shirtless photo and my God, ladies, go over to his Instagram. He's, he's looking insane.

• 1:37:37Speaker 01

He doesn't need help. People are looking at his Instagram.

• 1:37:41Dax Shepard?

And then my brother, he hears Duffy DeCastro. So then my brother says to him, oh, are you stuntie? Like, meaning are you a stunt man?

• 1:37:52Speaker 01

  Uh huh. To Austin.

• 1:37:53Dax Shepard?

  To Austin.

• 1:37:55Speaker 01

  You know what?

• 1:37:55Dax Shepard?

  Mind you, everyone.

• 1:37:57Speaker 01

  I love that.

• 1:37:57Dax Shepard?

And I say, Dave, he's Elvis. And then my brother goes, oh my God, you are Elvis. I love that movie. I saw it twice. I just let's it rip.

• 1:38:12Speaker 01

  That's nice.

• 1:38:12Dax Shepard?

It was hilarious. And then my sister was like fucking hyperventilating with how hot he was.

• 1:38:18Speaker 01

  Oh my.

• 1:38:18Dax Shepard?

It was exciting. It was an exciting.

• 1:38:21Speaker 01

  So exciting.

• 1:38:22Dax Shepard?

It was exciting for the whole family. And then Shawna and Edward were two rows behind me and threw a napkin at my face.

• 1:38:27Speaker 01

  Fun.

• 1:38:28Dax Shepard?

  Yeah. It was very fun.

• 1:38:30Speaker 01

That sounds like a great time.

• 1:38:31Dax Shepard?

It was. I felt popular. Oh, that's not Shawna.

• 1:38:34Speaker 01

  That's Connie Britton.

• 1:38:36Dax Shepard?

  That's Connie B.

• 1:38:37Speaker 01

God, lots of people, lots of pod mates that were there.

• 1:38:41Dax Shepard?

  Everyone was there.

• 1:38:43Speaker 01

  That's really cool.

• 1:38:44Dax Shepard?

Wow, wow, wow, wow. Yeah, it was a real see and be seen.

• 1:38:48Speaker 01

  Yeah, we did lose.

• 1:38:50Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:38:51Speaker 01

  So.

• 1:38:51Dax Shepard?

  Too many stars there.

• 1:38:52Speaker 01

Yeah, they need to dial it back a little bit.

• 1:38:55Dax Shepard?

And you know, my insecurity, like the whole way there. I'm like, I know we're in this, this, this suite that the MLB has. And I'm like, I'm gonna be in the, you know, I'm gonna be like row nine in this thing. This is what I'm thinking the whole, I'm not gonna see the game. They're gonna, shit, Chris Pine's here. He'll be right up front.

• 1:39:14Speaker 01

But also, also again, though, the comparison, you, you as a admittedly fair weather fan,

• 1:39:23Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:23Speaker 01

  zero loyalty.

• 1:39:24Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:25Speaker 01

Was invited to stay, to go in the MLB suite and you're like, oh no, I'm not.

• 1:39:31Dax Shepard?

I'm insecure that I'll be on the last row of whatever this already.

• 1:39:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:39:36Dax Shepard?

  rarified group is.

• 1:39:37Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:39:38Dax Shepard?

  Yes, very human of me.

• 1:39:40Speaker 01

It's so human and it's, and it's interesting. It's hard. It's hard. We're all comparing. No matter where we're at.

• 1:39:47Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm, mm hmm.

• 1:39:48Speaker 01

  Except maybe Brad.

• 1:39:50Dax Shepard?

It is all funny. It's very funny. It's very funny. You want me to admit the grossest thing?

• 1:39:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:39:55Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, this is disgusting.

• 1:39:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:39:57Dax Shepard?

Because I get insecure is what it is.

• 1:40:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:40:02Dax Shepard?

And so when I am talking to a famous person and someone yells my name, I'm grateful.

• 1:40:09Dax Shepard?

Like I was talking to Chris in front of the bathroom.

• 1:40:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:40:12Dax Shepard?

And dude walked by and he's like, what's up, Dax Shepard? And I was like, oh, that's, I'm good. I'm glad Chris knows at least some people know me.

• 1:40:21Speaker 01

  That's not that gross.

• 1:40:22Dax Shepard?

  Pretty gross.

• 1:40:23Speaker 01

  Well, no.

• 1:40:24Dax Shepard?

I'm like grateful for it. I'm like, oh, good. He saw that I'm like, some people know who I am.

• 1:40:30Speaker 01

I mean, it, it just makes, the only thing that it doesn't make sense about that is like. He knows who you are.

• 1:40:38Dax Shepard?

Of course he does, but in my insecurity, he doesn't think anyone knows who I am. Because it's nonsense.

• 1:40:45Speaker 01

Because he came on our show, so he obviously knows.

• 1:40:48Dax Shepard?

Like our show is this like cute thing and he's a movie star.

• 1:40:51Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:40:52Dax Shepard?

He feels bad for me that I got invited to the Dodgers game.

• 1:40:55Speaker 01

But do you feel, you, oh no. Yeah, this is.

• 1:40:59Dax Shepard?

I want to be very clear, these are like 7% preoccupations.

• 1:41:03Speaker 01

  Oh, sure.

• 1:41:03Dax Shepard?

You're actually not running the show at all.

• 1:41:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:41:05Dax Shepard?

They're like, just they're, they're faint thoughts that cross my head and then I CBD pop them, I pound them down.

• 1:41:11Speaker 01

Yeah, that's all you can do.

• 1:41:13Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and but, and but then also when someone yells my name while I'm talking to them, I'm grateful that the person yelled my name.

• 1:41:19Speaker 01

  Yeah, look.

• 1:41:19Dax Shepard?

So I'm not like vain and thin skin still, you know?

• 1:41:23Speaker 01

I have that, like if I'm at a event or something, I do like if someone comes up and says they're a fan of the show.

• 1:41:34Dax Shepard?

  Yes, of course.

• 1:41:35Speaker 01

  Because it does, yeah.

• 1:41:36Dax Shepard?

Makes you feel like you deserve to be there.

• 1:41:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:41:38Dax Shepard?

It's getting, it's like getting you over your imposter syndrome.

• 1:41:41Speaker 01

  Yes, exactly.

• 1:41:44Dax Shepard?

• 1:43:19Speaker 01

Similarly, I went to an event this weekend.

• 1:43:23Dax Shepard?

  A gala.

• 1:43:24Speaker 01

I went to a lunch gala.

• 1:43:27Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:43:28Speaker 01

We know I love galas. For the Rape Treatment Center and Stewart House that's connected to UCLA. And it was hosted by the cast of The Pit.

• 1:43:39Dax Shepard?

  Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

• 1:43:42Speaker 01

  Which is very exciting.

• 1:43:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:44Speaker 01

But like, so Molly sent me the thing and she was like, oh, she, she's connected to that organization and she was like, maybe we should go to this. And I was like, yeah, absolutely. Great cause.

• 1:43:55Dax Shepard?

  Love gala.

• 1:43:55Speaker 01

And I love galas and I love The Pit. So three for three.

• 1:44:00Dax Shepard?

I don't like rape, but the other two are really good.

• 1:44:02Speaker 01

That's right. That's right. So I, you know, we bought the seats and whatever. But I was not expecting it to be what it was. It was, it was like big. There were a lot of people there and

• 1:44:17Dax Shepard?

CNBC, kind of like a Dodgers game.

• 1:44:19Speaker 01

I guess it, I didn't expect it to be CNBC. And, um, and it is so weird what goes on in your head. Cause like, I was like, I'm gonna have to go to this thing on Saturday. But then I had, cause I also, we did a live stream for Beth Stetts. It was like, when I gotta leave early, I like, I gotta go for a minute, but then I gotta leave. And, um, and I was kind of preoccupied with it. I was like, oh, it's on the west side. Like I have to drive over there.

• 1:44:43Dax Shepard?

  Sure, sure.

• 1:44:44Speaker 01

Then we get there and I was like, oh shit, this is like an event.

• 1:44:49Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:49Speaker 01

Oh, and then, yeah, it is great. It's so gross. It's so gross because there was like a line, a talent. There was, there was a carpet.

• 1:45:00Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:01Speaker 01

And there was like a line for talent.

• 1:45:04Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and then a gen pop line.

• 1:45:06Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:45:06Dax Shepard?

  General population.

• 1:45:07Speaker 01

Tickets or whatever. And so, you know, we were walking, we're like, where do we go? And I was like, oh, I guess we're in this line.

• 1:45:13Dax Shepard?

  Okay, uh huh, gen pop.

• 1:45:15Speaker 01

Yeah, we were in gen pop. And, and I was like, and I, and I was like, well, we're not talent. And she was like, she was like, you are. And I was like, I'm not like talent is invited specifically and like men, you know?

• 1:45:29Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:29Speaker 01

  And, um.

• 1:45:31Dax Shepard?

  To sell tickets.

• 1:45:32Speaker 01

Yeah, and like, you know, then we're walking by the carpet.

• 1:45:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:37Speaker 01

And I'm seeing the cast of the pit. They're doing, you know, little interviews.

• 1:45:40Dax Shepard?

You're like, I won't hate if someone grabs me and says, are you gonna do the carpet? Yes, yes, of course.

• 1:45:45Speaker 01

But also, no, because I wasn't, I didn't like prepare.

• 1:45:48Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:45:49Speaker 01

And I saw ding ding ding, friend of the pod, Max Greenfield.

• 1:45:53Dax Shepard?

  Sure.

• 1:45:54Speaker 01

And he was in, of course, the ta- little talent area.

• 1:45:57Dax Shepard?

  He's not in gen pop.

• 1:45:58Speaker 01

And I was like, looking and I was like, oh, Max is here. And then I was like, I'm not gonna go say hi to Max because he doesn't even know who I am. And also, I can't even go into the talent area because I'm not talent. Uh, this is all bad. I'll let's, I'm gonna go get a mimosa, you know? So then like, we went and.

• 1:46:16Dax Shepard?

It's amazing you leave your house. I'm thinking of the birthday party you went to at All Time.

• 1:46:22Speaker 01

  Oh, God, that was horrible.

• 1:46:23Dax Shepard?

Like, as you're there, you're like, oh, my God, just get out of here. Or get a drink or get out of here.

• 1:46:27Speaker 01

I know, thank God, I was with Molly. So we were just, then we were just like there to have fun.

• 1:46:31Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:46:31Speaker 01

And then we're walking in and Max is there.

• 1:46:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:46:38Speaker 01

  And he's, he sees me.

• 1:46:40Dax Shepard?

Yeah, he's a very good boy.

• 1:46:42Speaker 01

And he's a very good boy. And I, and we, then we start, of course, chatting. He was like, oh, my God, I saw Dax yesterday. This is so fun. Switching you guys out. And we were all chatting. And I was like, I felt better.

• 1:46:53Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:46:53Speaker 01

And then I felt dumb for feeling better, like.

• 1:46:56Dax Shepard?

You felt mad at, you're disappointed in yourself.

• 1:46:58Speaker 01

Yeah, it is. It's like, oh, I hope people see I'm talking to Max. And it's like, she belongs, she's like, she knows him, she belongs here.

• 1:47:06Dax Shepard?

It's the greatest movie of all time. You can't buy me love. He knew if he dated that popular girl, everyone would like him. And he was right.

• 1:47:13Speaker 01

  They already liked him.

• 1:47:14Dax Shepard?

  They did it.

• 1:47:15Speaker 01

  Well, I haven't seen it.

• 1:47:16Dax Shepard?

You haven't seen it. It's one of the great movies.

• 1:47:19Speaker 01

  And I love Patrick Dempsey.

• 1:47:20Dax Shepard?

You'd love it. He's at his absolute cutest.

• 1:47:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:47:23Dax Shepard?

That's the movie that made him a star.

• 1:47:24Speaker 01

I know. You love, you love that movie.

• 1:47:26Dax Shepard?

  It's the best movie.

• 1:47:27Speaker 01

But I, anyway, and then, yeah, it's all so dumb. It's so stupid. And then we sat down at the table and this was so sim. This was so strange. Um, these two women come up to me.

• 1:47:43Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:47:43Speaker 01

And said, hi, um, you just had my best, you just had our best friend on, on your show, Jen, Jen. I was like, Jen Aniston?

• 1:47:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:55Speaker 01

And, and she was like, yeah. And I was like, oh my gosh. And she was like, I came up on the show. I was like, oh my gosh, you're the friend with the podcast.

• 1:48:04Dax Shepard?

  Dre?

• 1:48:05Speaker 01

  Dre.

• 1:48:06Dax Shepard?

Oh my God, you met Dre?

• 1:48:08Speaker 01

Yes, Dre, Dre and Kristen, this, this woman Kristen, Kristen, and they're best friends with her. And she was like, yeah. And she shouted my podcast out. And I was like, oh my gosh, how crazy.

• 1:48:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, truly.

• 1:48:20Speaker 01

And we're all sitting at the same table.

• 1:48:22Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:23Speaker 01

But also what was so funny is I was like, looking at her and I thought, you look like her. Like you look like her. You talk like her.

• 1:48:31Dax Shepard?

Like me and Aaron, when people are like, are they brothers?

• 1:48:33Speaker 01

Do this. You start melding and you become one thing. And it was really, it was, it was wild. And it's like, who was who first or, or not? Or you just like, you're, you become just one meld.

• 1:48:47Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Yeah. Aaron and I have had that forever.

• 1:48:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:48:50Dax Shepard?

We're girls that are you twins? And we're like, we don't look alike.

• 1:48:54Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:48:55Dax Shepard?

  But our thing is so.

• 1:48:56Speaker 01

Your vibe becomes one thing. I think Callie and I are the same.

• 1:49:00Dax Shepard?

Yes. And you guys definitely don't look alike.

• 1:49:02Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:49:03Dax Shepard?

No. But you do have like, if I just squint and I picture the halo and aura around you two, it is identical.

• 1:49:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:49:10Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:49:11Speaker 01

  But it.

• 1:49:11Dax Shepard?

  It's a shoppy, it's a shoppy, sparkly pink aura.

• 1:49:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:49:16Dax Shepard?

  You guys love that.

• 1:49:17Speaker 01

  Shoppy?

• 1:49:18Dax Shepard?

  Shoppy.

• 1:49:18Speaker 01

Yeah. Cause we shop a lot.

• 1:49:19Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And this is like two little girls that got to go shopping now.

• 1:49:23Speaker 01

  Went to the outlet mall.

• 1:49:24Dax Shepard?

  Permanently as adults. Yeah.

• 1:49:26Speaker 01

  That's funny.

• 1:49:26Dax Shepard?

It's like a fairy tale type. You and Kelly are when you're together, it's, it's a, well, then it's like when Aaron and I are together, but it's like when a, um, a lowly girl from America finds out she's the princess. You know?

• 1:49:38Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:49:38Dax Shepard?

And they go over to England. All of a sudden now they live in royalty.

• 1:49:41Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 1:49:42Dax Shepard?

  Yeah. And that's you guys.

• 1:49:43Speaker 01

  Cause we've stumbled upon.

• 1:49:44Dax Shepard?

Cause you used to go to the like the outlet stores and stuff.

• 1:49:47Speaker 01

  Yeah. In Mall of Georgia.

• 1:49:48Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And try to like get as much as you could for a buck 20.

• 1:49:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:49:52Dax Shepard?

And now it's like the reins are off.

• 1:49:54Speaker 01

Now it's Brentwood Country Mart on Black Friday.

• 1:49:57Dax Shepard?

  Yes. And it's in stone.

• 1:49:59Speaker 01

  And it's what?

• 1:50:00Dax Shepard?

The shopping dates are in stone. They're, they're, they're holidays.

• 1:50:03Speaker 01

Yes. It, yeah, it's, it's, it is funny. I notice it too. Like the way we, the jokes, what we've, the cadence of the joke, like very specific.

• 1:50:15Dax Shepard?

Also you act differently when you're around her.

• 1:50:18Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 1:50:19Dax Shepard?

And I bet she acts differently around you. And I bet you guys are both joining your fused identity.

• 1:50:24Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:50:25Dax Shepard?

Which is like you're much more, I don't want to say laid back in a negative way, but you're very laid back with her.

• 1:50:30Speaker 01

  Huh. That's interesting.

• 1:50:32Dax Shepard?

Yeah. You have a confidence, uh, in a, in a laid backness. I think when you're with her, you're kind of just like in playful. I'm in playful mode.

• 1:50:40Speaker 01

We're very play, it's very playful. Yeah.

• 1:50:44Dax Shepard?

You're not taking much seriously. You're not good. Yeah.

• 1:50:47Speaker 01

But then also she's who, that's who gets all the information about me.

• 1:50:54Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:50:55Speaker 01

With no reserve and vice versa.

• 1:50:57Dax Shepard?

What I feel when I'm with Aaron, which is kind of a, I think a healthy feeling, and particularly back when Aaron still drank and hung out in Detroit all day, every day.

• 1:51:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:09Dax Shepard?

  Our politics were different.

• 1:51:10Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 1:51:11Dax Shepard?

Right? Like, I just think we would be on different ends of many debates.

• 1:51:16Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:51:17Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:51:17Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:51:18Dax Shepard?

But when I'm with him. When I even consider that I have an identity that would be like, I'm liberal, or I'm this, seems really laughable.

• 1:51:28Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 1:51:29Dax Shepard?

Cause it came after, you know, it's like I got old enough to even identify with these things. They came so much later that they feel weirdly fraudulent in a healthy way.

• 1:51:40Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 1:51:41Dax Shepard?

Like whatever kind of identity I have in the world.

• 1:51:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:46Dax Shepard?

Is this seems laughable when I'm with him, cause like, he just knows me inside and out as the little 11 year old.

• 1:51:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:51Dax Shepard?

Before I had all this artifice.

• 1:51:53Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:51:54Dax Shepard?

  Actor.

• 1:51:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:56Dax Shepard?

  All this stuff.

• 1:51:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:58Dax Shepard?

  And I like that.

• 1:51:59Speaker 01

Yeah, I do too. I do, I like that too.

• 1:52:02Dax Shepard?

Like he was a biker, going to outlaw bike events and getting in gnarly things. And he had some identity as like outlaw biker for a while.

• 1:52:11Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:52:12Dax Shepard?

But I'm like, but get real, like the rest of the world's seen.

• 1:52:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:52:17Dax Shepard?

Oh dude, that guy is scary and he's a biker.

• 1:52:20Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:52:21Dax Shepard?

And I'm like, no, that's just kind of this funny thing he's been doing for six years.

• 1:52:26Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah. That makes sense. Yeah.

• 1:52:28Dax Shepard?

  But that's not him.

• 1:52:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:52:30Dax Shepard?

He's a goofball. That's all he really is.

• 1:52:33Speaker 01

Yeah, maybe he was a goofball then there too.

• 1:52:36Dax Shepard?

I'm sure he was the funniest member of the outlaw bikers, but there was definitely a much different.

• 1:52:43Speaker 01

You felt like he was trying on identity?

• 1:52:46Dax Shepard?

No, I think it was quite authentic to him.

• 1:52:48Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:52:48Dax Shepard?

He was a great fighter and rode motorcycles and was drunk all the time. So it's a pretty good fit.

• 1:52:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:52:55Dax Shepard?

And his aspirations were like, what's the next ride and the next party and the next throwdown?

• 1:53:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:53:02Dax Shepard?

  But those are all late.

• 1:53:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:53:04Dax Shepard?

  Add-ons for him.

• 1:53:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:53:07Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:53:08Speaker 01

  That's true.

• 1:53:09Dax Shepard?

And to go Dodgers. By the time this is out, I'm afraid.

• 1:53:12Speaker 01

  Who knows what will happen?

• 1:53:14Dax Shepard?

It's funny, cause they, they walk Otani every time and the people next to me are like so mad. And I go, bro, what would you do if you were on that team? Like, of course they're walking him. They're acting like there's like an ethical thing.

• 1:53:28Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:53:29Dax Shepard?

  You know?

• 1:53:30Speaker 01

  Why is, why?

• 1:53:32Dax Shepard?

Well, because they want to see him hit.

• 1:53:33Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:53:34Dax Shepard?

But they don't even give him a chance to swing. They announce we're walking him.

• 1:53:38Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:53:39Dax Shepard?

And he just goes straight to first base. He doesn't even have an at bat.

• 1:53:41Speaker 01

  That is weird.

• 1:53:43Dax Shepard?

Because why waste all the pitches? Why waste at any of it? Like, they're just, they can declare now to keep the game moving fast.

• 1:53:49Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:53:49Dax Shepard?

  We're just gonna walk him.

• 1:53:51Speaker 05

Well, they don't want him to hit a homerun.

• 1:53:52Dax Shepard?

They don't want him to hit a homerun because he's hit, he hit two.

• 1:53:55Speaker 01

Who decides? Both teams decide that?

• 1:53:57Dax Shepard?

No, no, the, the, the, the coaching staff on the, the, uh, Blue Jays.

• 1:54:04Speaker 01

  They decide.

• 1:54:05Dax Shepard?

  We're gonna walk him.

• 1:54:06Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:54:07Dax Shepard?

We're not gonna risk him hitting a homerun.

• 1:54:09Speaker 01

  No, I wanted, I don't want to?

• 1:54:11Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 1:54:11Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:54:13Dax Shepard?

So they're so mad because our best hitter is not hitting ever.

• 1:54:16Speaker 01

  Yes, I see.

• 1:54:17Dax Shepard?

And they want there to be an ethical dilemma about it.

• 1:54:20Speaker 01

  I see.

• 1:54:21Dax Shepard?

But it's just a strategy in the game.

• 1:54:22Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's a strategy.

• 1:54:23Dax Shepard?

And I was like, bro, would you pitch to this dude? He's the only guy on our team that's hitting home runs.

• 1:54:26Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly.

• 1:54:27Dax Shepard?

  Why would they?

• 1:54:28Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, if it's a rule of the game, what can you do?

• 1:54:31Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:54:31Speaker 01

You know, what can you do?

• 1:54:32Dax Shepard?

  They're using the robber.

• 1:54:34Speaker 01

I was just about to say.

• 1:54:35Dax Shepard?

  In our parlance.

• 1:54:36Speaker 01

It's part of the, it's part of the game.

• 1:54:39Dax Shepard?

Do you think I'll have a role in, um, Settlers of Catan?

• 1:54:43Speaker 01

  The.

• 1:54:43Dax Shepard?

For people who don't know, Settlers of Catan has been bought as a property that's getting turned into either a television show or a movie or a series of movies.

• 1:54:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:54:52Dax Shepard?

And I feel like I was pretty much first one in on the celebrity side.

• 1:54:57Speaker 01

  I want to be in.

• 1:54:58Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:54:59Speaker 01

  I'm a celebrity too.

• 1:55:01Dax Shepard?

  I'm gonna be brick.

• 1:55:09Speaker 01

  I call it wheat.

• 1:55:10Dax Shepard?

Well, they'd be terrible if they're like, we gotta make the, um, what do you call them? Not the supplements, the, uh, Those are the the four things you can get. They're called.

• 1:55:20Speaker 01

  The commodity.

• 1:55:21Dax Shepard?

  Not commodities. Resources? Resources.

• 1:55:25Speaker 01

  Oh shit.

• 1:55:25Dax Shepard?

What if they decided to anthropomorphize the resources? That would be the worst.

• 1:55:29Speaker 01

  Well, you'd be ore.

• 1:55:31Dax Shepard?

  I would?

• 1:55:32Speaker 01

Yeah, cuz like strong rock like although you'd be competing with the rock.

• 1:55:37Dax Shepard?

It may be brick. I think brick.

• 1:55:40Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:55:41Dax Shepard?

Or it doesn't seem colorful enough. It seems underground and not light enough. But brick is both strong.

• 1:55:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:55:49Dax Shepard?

  And vibrant.

• 1:55:50Speaker 01

Okay, but brick is a little dumber.

• 1:55:53Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:54Speaker 01

  You know?

• 1:55:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:55Speaker 01

I think ore is is is more.

• 1:55:58Dax Shepard?

  Wizardy.

• 1:55:58Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:55:59Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:56:00Speaker 01

  So.

• 1:56:01Dax Shepard?

  Wheat, brick, ore.

• 1:56:04Speaker 01

  And.

• 1:56:05Dax Shepard?

  Something green.

• 1:56:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:56:06Dax Shepard?

  Lumber.

• 1:56:07Speaker 01

We're not gonna get cast. We don't even remember.

• 1:56:09Dax Shepard?

This is crazy. Couldn't remember resources? Lumber?

• 1:56:13Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:56:14Dax Shepard?

Yeah, wood, brick, wheat and ore.

• 1:56:18Speaker 01

Who? What am I? I guess the only one that's kind of feminine is wheat, but I'm not wheat.

• 1:56:25Dax Shepard?

  I think you're wood.

• 1:56:25Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:56:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, brown trunk.

• 1:56:29Dax Shepard?

Wood's great. It's a life force. You can't poo poo wood. Wood's the greatest.

• 1:56:33Speaker 01

I know, but I just don't feel like it's me.

• 1:56:35Dax Shepard?

And the two best resources are brick and wood.

• 1:56:38Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:56:39Dax Shepard?

That's how you win the game. P S. If you haven't played.

• 1:56:42Speaker 01

But I just, I'm not wood, you know, wood is.

• 1:56:47Dax Shepard?

Trying to say something about wood cuz I guarantee there's a version of wood that would betray that statement.

• 1:56:52Speaker 01

  No, I don't think wood's bad.

• 1:56:53Dax Shepard?

But even what? What are you gonna say about wood? Cuz wood's everything.

• 1:56:57Speaker 01

But wood is like, I don't think I'm a tree, like trees, although I am a Virgo, double Virgo, and Virgos are very grounded.

• 1:57:08Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:57:10Speaker 01

Wood is ground, trees are grounded into the earth.

• 1:57:13Dax Shepard?

I think it might be helpful for you to say what you're not the most, and I think wheat, you're not the most.

• 1:57:19Speaker 01

Cuz cuz why? You can be honest.

• 1:57:22Dax Shepard?

  It's flimsy and it's white.

• 1:57:24Speaker 01

  Yeah, white and blonde.

• 1:57:25Dax Shepard?

  It looks like a blonde.

• 1:57:26Speaker 01

  Yeah, it is. It is.

• 1:57:28Dax Shepard?

  With the hair blowing around.

• 1:57:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:57:30Dax Shepard?

  And a convertible.

• 1:57:31Speaker 01

  I would probably cast like.

• 1:57:34Speaker 01

Anya Taylor Joy, the woman from Queen's Gambit.

• 1:57:39Dax Shepard?

Oh, smart. I'm going Sydney Sweeney. She was at the Dodgers game.

• 1:57:45Speaker 01

Oh, she was? Nice. Um, we is like, they could tip over.

• 1:57:51Dax Shepard?

Okay, I'm sorry. I'm not, I'm not done with the Dodgers.

• 1:57:55Speaker 01

  Oh, okay. Great.

• 1:57:57Dax Shepard?

Like, she was there. I saw a photo today.

• 1:57:59Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 1:58:00Dax Shepard?

And I was like, I mean, it's an appropriate sentence for me and it's still a great sentence.

• 1:58:07Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:58:07Dax Shepard?

But boys love me and girls don't. Like, if I would have met her, A, she wouldn't have stopped. Like, when I made eye contact with her in waves, she'd have been like, hey, and then kept moving.

• 1:58:16Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:58:17Dax Shepard?

Whereas Austin was like, oh, yeah, this guy's got bigger muscles than me. I'll talk to him.

• 1:58:22Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:58:23Dax Shepard?

  Right? Well, you've observed.

• 1:58:25Speaker 01

I have. Okay. Yeah. So I, I'm gonna poke some holes.

• 1:58:29Dax Shepard?

Okay, but boys in general, just because of these new muscles.

• 1:58:32Speaker 01

  It's not because of that.

• 1:58:34Dax Shepard?

She wouldn't have stopped to talk to me. She'd been like, where's Brad Pitt? I heard he's here.

• 1:58:39Speaker 01

  Okay. No.

• 1:58:40Dax Shepard?

What's the matter? What's the matter?

• 1:58:45Speaker 01

Okay, because all this is not exactly correct. Men are very interested. A lot of men are interested in your muscles.

• 1:58:52Dax Shepard?

  Thank you.

• 1:58:53Speaker 01

That is a hundred percent true.

• 1:58:54Dax Shepard?

We've observed it and it's so fun for me. That's why I love them. I keep them forever. I like these young men who want to talk about my muscles. I love it.

• 1:59:02Speaker 01

All right. And you can, that's great for you.

• 1:59:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:59:04Speaker 01

But I actually, I don't think it's the, I think muscles is like an easy thing to, to talk about. Like with a lot of women, not all, but with a lot of women, like, oh, my God, I love your dress. It's like, it's the in. Yeah, but it's not, it's not why they're talking to you. And it's also like, I think men want friendships. Like, they want to meet new men and women want to meet new women.

• 1:59:32Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:59:33Speaker 01

  So there's just a draw, you're drawn.

• 1:59:35Dax Shepard?

She doesn't want to meet me.

• 1:59:37Speaker 01

  I don't know. Maybe she's dying.

• 1:59:39Dax Shepard?

I think we agree, though, that she doesn't want to meet me, don't we?

• 1:59:42Speaker 01

  Maybe she's a armcherry.

• 1:59:44Dax Shepard?

I think she's really young and doesn't know who I am, which is totally understandable and fine. And then I think boys end up knowing about me because of the motorcycles and muscles.

• 1:59:59Speaker 01

I don't know. I don't. Also, why do they have to know you to want to talk to you?

• 2:00:03Dax Shepard?

Because they're at a very crowded place where everyone there wants to talk to them. Very naturally, they're doing a lot of sussing out of who they're gonna stop and talk to.

• 2:00:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:00:13Dax Shepard?

  They're on the move.

• 2:00:14Speaker 01

  Right.

• 2:00:14Dax Shepard?

They gotta keep it moving. And of course.

• 2:00:17Speaker 01

But maybe they're just like, I am not talking to anyone unless I know them. Like, I've met them and I would really be able to have a conversation because, I mean, even David Chang, lest we forget.

• 2:00:34Dax Shepard?

  Well, that-

• 2:00:34Speaker 01

  That was a horrible-

• 2:00:35Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that was all your... You just spun out. You agree. You really spun out.

• 2:00:41Speaker 01

  But-

• 2:00:41Dax Shepard?

And then also, the fact that you were so mad at me that at the Emmys, when I met Noah Wiley, I did not tell him what a fan you were. You're upset.

• 2:00:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:00:50Dax Shepard?

And now you were at this thing with Noah Wiley, and you didn't even introduce yourself.

• 2:00:54Speaker 01

  Of course not.

• 2:00:56Dax Shepard?

So, look, you wanted me to do something-

• 2:00:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:00:59Dax Shepard?

That you want to do for yourself.

• 2:01:00Speaker 01

Because you have, you are a famous person.

• 2:01:04Dax Shepard?

I have muscles, is why you want to talk to me.

• 2:01:06Speaker 01

You are, you were at the Emmys as an actor-

• 2:01:12Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 2:01:13Speaker 01

  And talking to another actor.

• 2:01:15Dax Shepard?

That's a plus one, but go ahead.

• 2:01:16Speaker 01

Okay, I didn't want to say that part, but... Listen, Noah Wiley almost sat at the table, okay? And then he didn't, he got moved, and I was sad about that. Because I would, I would have talked to him if he was at the table.

• 2:01:33Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 2:01:33Speaker 01

And I would have said, "Hi, Monica, I think you're gonna come on my podcast."

• 2:01:39Dax Shepard?

You know what would have been great for you to say?

• 2:01:40Speaker 01

  What?

• 2:01:42Dax Shepard?

"Oh my God, hey, I saw you on the hayride last year." Because we already know.

• 2:01:45Speaker 01

  I'm not willing to lie.

• 2:01:47Dax Shepard?

  Okay, that's fair.

• 2:01:48Speaker 01

You know, I just, I'm not, so I would-

• 2:01:50Dax Shepard?

  I would in that sit.

• 2:01:51Speaker 01

I know you would, but I'm not gonna lie, okay?

• 2:01:53Dax Shepard?

Okay, so back to your strategy.

• 2:01:55Speaker 01

I would say, "Hi, I'm Monica. It's really nice to meet you. I think you might, you're, oh no."

• 2:02:02Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:02:03Speaker 01

Oh no! I'm doing a bad job!

• 2:02:07Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I think you should have stuck with the hayride.

• 2:02:09Speaker 01

  No, I'm not. I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I would say, "I think we're, um..."

• 2:02:14Dax Shepard?

  Oh, boy.

• 2:02:16Speaker 01

Hey, I'm good at talking to people, okay? I would just say, hey, I think you're so hot. I had a dream about you last night.

• 2:02:25Dax Shepard?

There we go. He would be all ears. If you bring up work to him in any capacity, he's probably gonna be like, oh, oh.

• 2:02:31Speaker 01

No, he wouldn't because that's him. Then he knows my, I'm relevant. I would say you're.

• 2:02:36Dax Shepard?

He said, oh my God, I had the hottest dream about you two weeks ago.

• 2:02:38Speaker 01

I literally did have a dream about him last night. That is, it is weird that we, it is weird. But, okay, no, I.

• 2:02:45Dax Shepard?

I want to hear it and I'm not even him.

• 2:02:46Speaker 01

I would say, hey, I'm Monica. Really nice to meet you. I think we're scheduled, we're like working on.

• 2:02:56Dax Shepard?

You're having a hard time transitioning.

• 2:02:58Speaker 01

My podcast, Armchair Expert with Dex. I think you guys have chatted. So I'd definitely pull you in.

• 2:03:06Dax Shepard?

Right. So if you're gonna pull me in anyways, just go, hey, I think we were both on Dex's Hey Ride last year.

• 2:03:12Speaker 01

  No, that's a lie.

• 2:03:13Dax Shepard?

Then you can talk about Halloween.

• 2:03:15Speaker 01

  I don't want to. I want to.

• 2:03:16Dax Shepard?

Well, then the other thing will happen.

• 2:03:18Speaker 01

  Listen.

• 2:03:19Dax Shepard?

Start with some sugar and then ask him to eat.

• 2:03:22Speaker 01

Listen, I think my way was gonna be great. Cause he'd be like, oh, yes, I'm trying to come on.

• 2:03:29Dax Shepard?

Are you willing to wear a body wire for this next?

• 2:03:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:03:32Dax Shepard?

Okay. Cause I want to hear you. It's the transition into, I think we're trying to schedule you that you need to workshop a little bit.

• 2:03:40Speaker 01

Hey, I'm Monica. Nice to meet you. This is my friend Molly.

• 2:03:44Dax Shepard?

Shit, you were, were you on the Hey Ride last year?

• 2:03:47Speaker 01

  Oh, I'd, no.

• 2:03:49Dax Shepard?

You were not? Well, now you're gonna lie the other direction.

• 2:03:53Speaker 01

I don't want you to know me from that.

• 2:03:56Dax Shepard?

Or you know me from my success. Okay, maybe. I mean, look, try it, try it, try it.

• 2:04:00Speaker 01

  I'm gonna try it.

• 2:04:01Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:04:01Speaker 01

And when, when he comes on, let's ask him.

• 2:04:03Dax Shepard?

Yeah, well, we'll make him, we'll make him.

• 2:04:05Speaker 01

Now he's definitely not coming on, cause this is.

• 2:04:07Dax Shepard?

We might have just lost him. But do you want to do some vax?

• 2:04:10Speaker 01

  Yeah, I guess.

• 2:04:14Speaker 01

  Okay, Reese.

• 2:04:15Dax Shepard?

  Reese. Reese Witherspoon.

• 2:04:18Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 2:04:19Dax Shepard?

Do you think in Germany, they would call her? I'm not gonna do it, cuz you're already nervous. Reese Witherspoon.

• 2:04:28Speaker 01

  Yeah, probably.

• 2:04:29Dax Shepard?

  I didn't even sound German.

• 2:04:30Speaker 01

Well, it sounded, um, what is?

• 2:04:33Dax Shepard?

Did it sound like Stephen Dobna?

• 2:04:36Speaker 01

  No.

• 2:04:36Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:04:38Speaker 01

That didn't sound anything like it.

• 2:04:39Dax Shepard?

I do hope because Stephen, cuz I posted that clip.

• 2:04:42Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 2:04:43Dax Shepard?

I hope enough people in Stephen's life, cuz remember I said, just pay attention and in three years when we meet, let's just notice it. But now I hope people who have heard that will start saying, will start saying that to him.

• 2:04:53Speaker 01

  Oh, God.

• 2:04:53Dax Shepard?

I think that would be so funny.

• 2:04:55Speaker 01

That's funny, but then that's not a good experiment.

• 2:04:58Dax Shepard?

  It's a terrible experience cuz I've tainted.

• 2:04:59Speaker 01

  Yeah, you tainted experiment.

• 2:05:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah. Reese Witherspoon.

• 2:05:03Speaker 01

I think it sounded German when you said it.

• 2:05:06Dax Shepard?

  Reese.

• 2:05:07Speaker 01

Do you wanna do it again? You sure you don't wanna get another one?

• 2:05:10Dax Shepard?

I'll want to soon as you start talking, but I'm not gonna.

• 2:05:12Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:05:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:05:15Speaker 01

That's gross. Now I want In-N-Out cuz you brought In-N-Out up, and now I want that.

• 2:05:21Dax Shepard?

  Really good.

• 2:05:22Speaker 01

  And I want a martini.

• 2:05:25Dax Shepard?

  Nice.

• 2:05:26Speaker 01

  And I want.

• 2:05:27Dax Shepard?

  Cigarette?

• 2:05:28Speaker 01

Not a cigarette. Um, Anna texted me recently and said, you teaching me how to drink, I think you teaching me how to drink martinis is the best thing that ever happened to me.

• 2:05:40Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 2:05:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:05:42Dax Shepard?

  That's.

• 2:05:43Speaker 01

I just want you to know that she said that.

• 2:05:45Dax Shepard?

I know, it's really flattering, but it's not what I want for her to be the best thing you taught her.

• 2:05:52Speaker 01

  Well.

• 2:05:53Dax Shepard?

  I mean.

• 2:05:54Speaker 01

You don't get to pick what the best thing is that I taught her. I've taught her so much.

• 2:05:58Dax Shepard?

I love, I just love Anna, so whatever makes her happy, I'm happy.

• 2:06:01Speaker 01

She's doing great. It's not like drinking martinis is affecting her life poorly.

• 2:06:06Dax Shepard?

  She's thriving.

• 2:06:06Speaker 01

  She's very active and thriving.

• 2:06:08Dax Shepard?

She's fit, playing a lot of sports.

• 2:06:10Speaker 01

Exactly. She's also a social butterfly.

• 2:06:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:06:13Speaker 01

So, I agree that I think the martinis is probably the best thing that's ever happened to her.

• 2:06:20Dax Shepard?

  Really broadened her horizons.

• 2:06:21Speaker 01

  I did.

• 2:06:22Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:06:22Speaker 01

  Um.

• 2:06:23Dax Shepard?

  Reese.

• 2:06:24Speaker 01

Reese. I bet Reese likes martini, actually.

• 2:06:27Dax Shepard?

I don't know if she does.

• 2:06:29Speaker 01

Hmm. We didn't ask. She mentioned High Noon at one point, so I think she she drinks when whenever she wants, but.

• 2:06:37Dax Shepard?

  I think she drinks responsibly.

• 2:06:39Speaker 01

I just don't know if she drinks martinis. Like, that's a specific endeavor.

• 2:06:45Dax Shepard?

  Very metropolitan.

• 2:06:46Speaker 01

  You mean cosmopolitan, but not.

• 2:06:48Dax Shepard?

Well, that's another drink, so I thought it would get confusing.

• 2:06:52Speaker 01

I know. I've never had one of those.

• 2:06:54Dax Shepard?

  Cosmo?

• 2:06:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:06:56Dax Shepard?

Even though you love Sex and the City?

• 2:06:57Speaker 01

Yeah, but actually, maybe because of it, I'm like, eh.

• 2:07:00Dax Shepard?

Oh, wow. So you do have a bit of me in you.

• 2:07:02Speaker 01

I have a lot of you in me.

• 2:07:04Dax Shepard?

  I know.

• 2:07:04Speaker 01

And you have a lot of me in you.

• 2:07:06Dax Shepard?

I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know. But like, I didn't like Friends because everyone liked it, and you're like, what are you talking about?

• 2:07:11Speaker 01

  Yeah, that part's dumb.

• 2:07:13Dax Shepard?

Right. But the fact that you love Sex and the City, but you didn't want the Cosmo is interesting. It's like, there was a line.

• 2:07:19Speaker 01

I guess so. Yeah, there was something about the Cosmo that felt like.

• 2:07:23Dax Shepard?

  Posery.

• 2:07:25Speaker 01

I guess. But I will say, when I was watching.

• 2:07:28Dax Shepard?

Seems like you would love one. I think I'm gonna have one.

• 2:07:30Speaker 01

I don't know. No, you're not. And I don't know why there's something about that drink that doesn't seem appealing to me.

• 2:07:37Dax Shepard?

  Pink, isn't it pink?

• 2:07:38Speaker 01

Yeah, but does it have cran?

• 2:07:40Dax Shepard?

  I don't know.

• 2:07:41Speaker 01

Rob, can you look up if it has cran?

• 2:07:43Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 2:07:44Dax Shepard?

You look up if it's good in combating UTIs.

• 2:07:46Speaker 01

Cran. Because, you know, vodka cran was my original drink.

• 2:07:51Dax Shepard?

Oh, it was, but you got sick on it.

• 2:07:52Speaker 01

So, yeah. Or I just got sick of it. And I was like, so anything pinkish, I think, might be cran.

• 2:07:57Speaker 05

  Yeah, it is cranberry juice.

• 2:07:59Speaker 01

Oh, yeah, that. So that's a no for me.

• 2:08:01Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:08:02Speaker 01

Dog. Okay, how much is Cristiano Ronaldo worth?

• 2:08:11Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah. Maybe a bill.

• 2:08:12Speaker 01

It says 1.4 billion. But we know we can't fully trust the internet on net worth. We know this.

• 2:08:18Dax Shepard?

  We know this.

• 2:08:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:08:19Dax Shepard?

  I know this personally.

• 2:08:20Speaker 01

Exactly. So, so I, but that's what it says, according to the.

• 2:08:24Dax Shepard?

I think he's the highest paid athlete currently, yearly, between his.

• 2:08:28Speaker 01

It says he's the first billionaire footballer.

• 2:08:31Speaker 05

I feel like sports, you can get a little closer because the salary's public. She's making 208 million euros in 2026.

• 2:08:41Dax Shepard?

  Just from his salary.

• 2:08:42Speaker 05

  Salary.

• 2:08:43Dax Shepard?

That's knowable. They have to speculate a lot on all the endorsement deals.

• 2:08:46Speaker 01

Exactly. Um, okay. So you said belissimo isn't a word in Italy. It is a word.

• 2:08:52Dax Shepard?

  What does it mean?

• 2:08:52Speaker 01

Um, it means very beautiful, gorgeous, stunning.

• 2:08:55Dax Shepard?

  Hmm.

• 2:08:57Speaker 01

  So.

• 2:08:58Dax Shepard?

Maybe my confusion is that I rarely say it correctly.

• 2:09:01Speaker 01

  Hmm. Perhaps.

• 2:09:04Dax Shepard?

  It's belissimo?

• 2:09:05Speaker 01

  I think so.

• 2:09:06Dax Shepard?

  Belissimo.

• 2:09:08Speaker 01

  I don't, I don't see why.

• 2:09:10Dax Shepard?

  It's a beautiful word, right?

• 2:09:12Speaker 01

  It's a nice word. Yeah.

• 2:09:13Dax Shepard?

You want to give it a shot?

• 2:09:14Speaker 01

  No. I'm okay.

• 2:09:16Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:09:16Speaker 01

Okay. You said Wikipedia said that her dad was, you're, you're going to sue Wikipedia because it said her dad was a head and neck.

• 2:09:25Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 2:09:25Speaker 01

And he was ear, nose and throat.

• 2:09:27Dax Shepard?

  E N T.

• 2:09:28Speaker 01

But actually what it says is that he was.

• 2:09:33Dax Shepard?

  I know it's a tough word.

• 2:09:34Speaker 01

  This is.

• 2:09:36Dax Shepard?

One of the hardest words I've ever seen.

• 2:09:37Speaker 01

  Otorhinolaryngology. Otorhinolaryngology.

• 2:09:44Dax Shepard?

  Game of Thrones. Odo.

• 2:09:45Speaker 01

It, it does sound like that. That's horrible. Um, and abbreviated to O R L. O R L, head and neck surgery or ear, nose and throat.

• 2:09:58Dax Shepard?

  Or. Okay.

• 2:10:00Speaker 01

So you don't have to continue.

• 2:10:02Dax Shepard?

  It gave me either or.

• 2:10:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:10:03Dax Shepard?

I dropped my lawsuit. Wikipedia, breathe easy. I would be getting some of my money back because I do donate to them often.

• 2:10:10Speaker 01

  Otolaryngologist.

• 2:10:11Dax Shepard?

  Oh, Odo. Odidor.

• 2:10:15Speaker 01

I guess this goes back to when you said the thing about, um, prescriptions and why aren't they like this?

• 2:10:20Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:10:21Speaker 01

This is like that. Like, why is that word like that?

• 2:10:23Dax Shepard?

That, at least, I hate it. And at least it definitely has a Latin origin.

• 2:10:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:10:29Dax Shepard?

Those words definitely in Latin mean head and neck.

• 2:10:33Speaker 01

  Right.

• 2:10:33Dax Shepard?

  Right?

• 2:10:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:10:34Dax Shepard?

Zaljans is a totally made up word.

• 2:10:37Speaker 01

  That we know of.

• 2:10:40Speaker 01

We don't know. Um, okay, so she said she won a mock trial award.

• 2:10:47Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:10:47Speaker 01

And so I tried to look up the award and I couldn't find it, but it was-

• 2:10:52Dax Shepard?

It was like the county, the 12 county nationals or something?

• 2:10:55Speaker 01

She said it was like best witness or something like that. But I, in my looking it up, there was on the Tennessee Bar Association website. It said, um, "The Academy Award winning actress Reese Witherspoon is perhaps the best known Tennessee mock trial alumna. She participated as part of the Harpeth Hall Schools team in the early 1990s, although her online biography does not mention this important milestone!" Exclamation point. They're very upset about that. Hopefully this episode, they'll be really pleased.

• 2:11:30Dax Shepard?

Yeah, say it again. Say the name of the joint again.

• 2:11:32Speaker 01

Well, that's from the Tennessee Bar Association, but it's the Tennessee Mock Trial.

• 2:11:36Dax Shepard?

Okay. And the hemp, hemp horse?

• 2:11:39Speaker 01

She went to Harpeth Hall School, I guess, or she was a part of the Harpeth Hall Schools team.

• 2:11:45Dax Shepard?

  Harpeth, that's a puky word.

• 2:11:47Speaker 01

  Harpeth?

• 2:11:48Dax Shepard?

  Harpeth.

• 2:11:49Speaker 01

It doesn't bother me. It sounds like a, like a harpist.

• 2:11:52Dax Shepard?

That sounds nice, but I'm thinking like I sat down and I seen there's like a little bit of harpeth on it.

• 2:11:57Speaker 01

  Ew.

• 2:11:57Dax Shepard?

Right. It almost sounds like herpes or-

• 2:12:00Speaker 01

Oh, it all circles back to herpes. You thought herpes was cute, though.

• 2:12:04Dax Shepard?

It is kinda cute in its original form.

• 2:12:08Speaker 01

Harpeth, cause it kinda sounds like-

• 2:12:10Dax Shepard?

  Hair lip?

• 2:12:11Speaker 01

It kinda sounds like carpet, but like gross carpet.

• 2:12:15Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

• 2:12:18Speaker 01

My lip just shed. I got some harpeth.

• 2:12:22Dax Shepard?

It's a shame. That was one of your really strong features. Someone wrote in the comments on Bree's episode, "Wow, definitely realm features."

• 2:12:31Speaker 01

Oh, because she is, like, she's well endowed, right? Is that why?

• 2:12:36Dax Shepard?

Well, no, I think they were talking about her face, as we always do. She is well endowed, but-

• 2:12:40Speaker 01

  I thought-

• 2:12:41Dax Shepard?

Well, now I gotta rethink it. I hope that's not what they were saying.

• 2:12:43Speaker 01

  Well, that is-

• 2:12:45Dax Shepard?

She would actually love it. So now I don't care. Now I'm doing a two, one eighties, I'm back to a three sixty.

• 2:12:52Speaker 01

Girls, the stats around girls and boys in college. Girls are going to college at 63%. Oh, this way, sorry, this is what you said.

• 2:13:00Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 2:13:00Speaker 01

You said, "Girls are going to college at 63% and boys at 37." Okay, "In recent years, a higher percentage of girls and boys has entered college, with rates around 65% for women versus 57% for men among recent high school graduates. This trend has been consistent since 1996. Consequently, women now make up a larger share of the total undergraduate student population, approximately 58% compared to men who are about 42%."

• 2:13:28Dax Shepard?

Okay, so I was off by 5%.

• 2:13:30Speaker 01

Okay, "The Four Agreements." She brought up "The Four Agreements" at the very end. That's a very big book that people love. It's self-helpy.

• 2:13:41Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm.

• 2:13:41Speaker 01

I don't know if you've heard about it.

• 2:13:43Dax Shepard?

I've heard it. I'd never read it.

• 2:13:45Speaker 01

  People-

• 2:13:46Dax Shepard?

  I, of all the genres-

• 2:13:48Speaker 01

It's not for you as much.

• 2:13:49Dax Shepard?

Self-help is the least consumed for me.

• 2:13:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:13:52Dax Shepard?

I don't know that I've ever read even one. I tried to read Eckhart Tolle's book and I just-

• 2:13:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:13:57Dax Shepard?

Put it down in the introduction, yeah.

• 2:13:59Speaker 01

Yeah, I get that. It's interesting, though, because like we have, like, self-help, that category bleeds into so many other things that we do like. It's interesting.

• 2:14:14Dax Shepard?

Well, right, because most self-help books are built on the shoulders of psychiatry and social sciences. And I guess the big book of Alcoholics Anonymous is the ultimate self-help book.

• 2:14:25Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's true.

• 2:14:26Dax Shepard?

It's to help yourself, not kill yourself.

• 2:14:29Speaker 01

Yeah, that's a pretty important one. How often, do you guys at meetings ever like read out of it?

• 2:14:35Dax Shepard?

Yeah, in general, like if you go to a public California, now, all states have different traditions. Like, meetings in Michigan where I grew up, I prefer. You would gather as a big group. They would read the, all the like preamble stuff, the tenets, the traditions.

• 2:14:57Dax Shepard?

And then they would break up. There would always be 12 tables.

• 2:15:00Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:15:01Dax Shepard?

And each table was a step.

• 2:15:02Speaker 01

  Oh, that's cool.

• 2:15:03Dax Shepard?

So if you felt like you really were feeling powerless and you needed to work the first step, or you were having a hard time letting things go and you know, you could kind of pick what step and then, and then that was generally, should be the starting point of a share or the topic.

• 2:15:18Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:15:18Dax Shepard?

I love that. And every, every meeting at least that I went to in Michigan was all share meetings. Here in LA, the vast, vast, vast majority of meetings are speaker meetings. So you go there and they always, always read how it works.

• 2:15:34Dax Shepard?

Seldom have we seen a person who's thoroughly followed our path. You know, the whole explanation, there are some that are constitutionally incapable if they can't be honest with themselves.

• 2:15:42Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 2:15:42Dax Shepard?

It's, I think, page 58 and you read three or four pages. And then at the end of that, you're reading all 12 steps out loud.

• 2:15:48Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:15:49Dax Shepard?

Then a speaker will get up and they'll do what in Michigan, we would call it an open talk. And then they'll speak for like 30 to 40 minutes.

• 2:15:58Speaker 01

  Oh, whoa.

• 2:15:59Dax Shepard?

And they'll give their whole story, what it was like, what happened and what it's like now.

• 2:16:03Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:16:04Dax Shepard?

And at the end of that, very customary here in LA, then people can come up and do two or three minute shares. But there's only like 10 minutes left for that, or 15 or 20, depending on how long the person's, the main speaker's share was. I only go to share meetings. I go to only men's meetings and we sit in a circle. And yes, we generally read some part of the book. Whoever has to read that night can just randomly open the book, or maybe they wanted to, they wanted to remind themselves of a certain thing. So yes, you do hear the book.

• 2:16:36Speaker 01

  Oh, interesting.

• 2:16:38Dax Shepard?

Public means you don't hear a lot of the book. You mostly just hear how it works.

• 2:16:41Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 2:16:43Dax Shepard?

In the event that it's someone's first meeting.

• 2:16:44Speaker 01

  Right. That makes sense.

• 2:16:46Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:16:47Speaker 01

Cool. And you guys take turns who's reading?

• 2:16:51Dax Shepard?

We should. We do a bad job at that. Mostly, uh, my friend gets fucked because he hosts the meeting and he generally, occasionally, when I'm feeling generous, I'll go, I'll read. Because generally, if you read, you also have to share first. And it kind of blows sharing first. What's really fun is to hear like eight people share and then it just conjures up all these memories and thoughts. And then by the time it gets to you, it's like, you really had a lot to stew on to share about. But if you're just cold out of the gates, it's harder.

• 2:17:19Speaker 01

  Huh.

• 2:17:20Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And as you're reading it, most of us, it's harder for us to hear it when you're reading it than just hearing it.

• 2:17:26Speaker 01

  Yes, that makes sense.

• 2:17:28Dax Shepard?

You're still worried about reading out loud.

• 2:17:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:17:30Dax Shepard?

So then you're supposed to have some kind of thought about what the reading, but you didn't really hear it all that well.

• 2:17:34Speaker 01

I'm kind of, I'm actually, I'm very impressed that you guys stick to that, even though that sounds like an annoying part, but it seems like an important part.

• 2:17:43Dax Shepard?

  It's kind of like it.

• 2:17:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:17:45Dax Shepard?

I have no religion in my life.

• 2:17:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:17:47Dax Shepard?

And like, clearly, religion has worked for 3,000 years for a reason. And there's something very soothing about the tradition of, all right, now I'm hearing someone read the thing. And yeah, it's actually quite nice.

• 2:18:00Speaker 01

  That's great.

• 2:18:01Dax Shepard?

There are passages I hate because the book has all how to get sober. And then the back of the book is all personal stories. Some of them are fantastic and some of them I hate. Some of them are like, they're religious zealots.

• 2:18:12Speaker 01

  Right.

• 2:18:12Dax Shepard?

And really, Jesus just got them sober somehow. I don't, you know.

• 2:18:16Speaker 01

  How many pages is it?

• 2:18:17Dax Shepard?

  It's a big fucking book. I bet it's 430 or something.

• 2:18:21Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 2:18:23Dax Shepard?

  Rob?

• 2:18:25Dax Shepard?

I heard one key hit. I thought, oh, maybe he's already checking.

• 2:18:27Speaker 01

Yeah, interesting. Well, the four agreements.

• 2:18:31Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:18:32Speaker 01

Are, one, be impeccable with your word. Two, do not take anything personally. Ding ding ding. I mean, I wasn't taking it personally.

• 2:18:50Speaker 01

Do not take anything personally is a good one. I like that. I mean, it's very let them, actually.

• 2:18:55Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:18:56Speaker 01

It's really hard. Well, oh, God, do I like that? Because some things are personal. If someone says you are doing something. Yeah, then that's personal.

• 2:19:07Dax Shepard?

  But again.

• 2:19:08Speaker 01

I mean, it's not about you, actually.

• 2:19:09Dax Shepard?

  It's actually not.

• 2:19:10Speaker 01

It's not about you, but I think it's okay for you to say like.

• 2:19:13Dax Shepard?

Don't talk to me that way.

• 2:19:14Speaker 01

  Right, right.

• 2:19:15Dax Shepard?

But it's, there's a big difference between don't talk to me that way and being emotionally affected by it.

• 2:19:19Speaker 01

Yeah, you're right. Or taking that on as truth.

• 2:19:22Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:19:23Speaker 01

Yeah, that's interesting. Okay, so four is always do your best. Those are the four agreements.

• 2:19:29Dax Shepard?

  Will you read them quickly?

• 2:19:30Speaker 01

One, be impeccable with your word. Two, do not take anything personally. Three, do not make assumptions. And four, always do your best.

• 2:19:38Dax Shepard?

  I don't think I heard don't make assumptions.

• 2:19:40Speaker 01

Oh, maybe I didn't say that one.

• 2:19:41Dax Shepard?

  That one's, that's a, that's a big pothole for me. I make a lot of assumptions.

• 2:19:47Speaker 01

  Assumptions?

• 2:19:50Dax Shepard?

I'm making ass out of you and me.

• 2:19:52Speaker 01

That's what they say. That is what they say.

• 2:19:54Speaker 05

Do you want the book length?

• 2:19:55Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:19:55Speaker 05

So the original edition was 432 pages, which you said 430.

• 2:20:00Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 2:20:01Speaker 05

Uh, but the fourth edition is 576.

• 2:20:05Dax Shepard?

  576.

• 2:20:07Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 2:20:07Dax Shepard?

It's a big book. That's why they call it the big book.

• 2:20:09Speaker 01

  That is a huge book.

• 2:20:11Dax Shepard?

  Too big of a book.

• 2:20:12Speaker 01

Oh, um, all right. Well, I think that, let me do one more quick. Make sure I didn't skip. Oh, she brought up CTE. I just wanted to say that.

• 2:20:23Dax Shepard?

You should get a tattoo that says CTE.

• 2:20:29Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's it.

• 2:20:30Dax Shepard?

  All right, I love you.

• 2:20:31Speaker 01

  Love you.
