All Pro Derek Stingley Jr and his pops, Derek Stingley Sr, talk 3 generations of NFL, paralyzing hit to his grandfather , growing up in Louisiana, LSU football 2019, Houston Texans, CJ Stroud, defending Patrick Mahomes, legacy and Super Bowl

“Even with the good, you know, the bad is going to always come. And I will always say block out the outside noise. You only control what you can control." Derek Stingley Jr's advice from his father Special episode to kick off Super Bowl week as Ryan, Channing and Fred sit with a football family spanning three NFL generations. Louisiana natives nick-named Big Sting and Little Sting-Derek Stingley Sr. and Derek Stingley Jr. chat about legacy of their family name in football, dealing with heartache, overcoming unimaginable challenges, the sacrifices it takes to reach the highest level of the game and how to stay at the top once you are there. Derek Stingley Jr, Houston Texans' All Pro Cornerback, is one of the most explosive and skilled players in the NFL, going from a stand out at LSU and part of the 2019 National Championship team to now paving his own path as one of the top defensive players in the league while living out the legacy of his family name. But the young Stingley's football story started long ago. His father shares the story of Sting's grandfather, Darryl Stingley, whose career was tragically cut short after a paralyzing hit in an NFL preseason game. Derek Stingley Sr recalls watching the hit that would forever alter their family's life and despite the trauma of his father’s injury, Stingley Sr. never ran from football. He explains that his father instilled in him the mindset that “as football players, we assume the risks'," and this same mentality was passed down to his son, Stingley Jr who shares in the memories of his late grandfather, his approach to the game and how his own dad's tough coaching prepared him for the NFL level now. As a proud father, Stingley Sr understands its the 1% of the 1% who make it to the NFL but recalls the "this is different" moment when he first saw something special in his son, Derek Jr while coaching him as a young boy who always wanted to match up against the older kids and thrived on competition. “I stood back there with my hands on my hair like, oh my God, like, how could somebody that young do that or think that?". Stingley Jr. reflects on his journey to the NFL, from his time at LSU, where he was regarded as the best player on the team as a freshman on a National championship team that featured Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson. He and his father discuss how they handled the outside noise whether it’s praise or criticism. When it comes to on-the-field matchups, Stingley Jr. breaks down his first experiences in the NFL, discussing the speed of the game, going against elite quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, and recognizing the talent of practice squad players who don’t get the credit they deserve. He assesses his season, believing he could have had far more interceptions, showcasing the high expectations he holds for himself. Having played the Kansas City Chiefs twice this year, Sting shares what he thinks the Philadelphia Eagles must do to slow down the man in red and white wearing #15 looking for his 3rd back to back title in Super Bowl LIX. Stingley Jr. reflecting on what he wants his legacy to be, stating that when people hear his name, he wants them to say he made his family proud. With a father and grandfather whose legacies are woven into football history, He understands the weight of his last name but instead of running from it, he embraces it. This episode is a true testament to family, resilience, and the pursuit of greatness. The Stingley’s story is more than just football, It’s about overcoming adversity, honoring legacy, and building something that lasts beyond the game. I think it was like, maybe like 2017. I was training cats for the combine at pro day. And one of them was like, man, I can get more than you in 225. I was like, no you can't. So he hit 15, I was like, maybe so. And so I did it. And I got to like 13 and I was like, and I was like, man, I might be able to get 16. What? I got 16 though. No, I can't do it no more. I was about to say. Yeah, I can't do it no more.

• 1:25Channing Crowder?

  32.

• 1:26Speaker 04

That was about, what'd he say, about eight years ago? You did 32?

• 1:29Channing Crowder?

  I did 32 in Florida.

  You did 32 in Kmart?

• 1:32Speaker 04

• 1:34Channing Crowder?

32 real ones. Them last six though.

• 1:52Ryan Clark?

Yeah, they don't care nothing about that.

• 1:53Speaker 04

  Right, right.

You probably had to do it if you like, oh boy, from Mississippi State, Emmanuel Ford, because he was 140.

• 1:59Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm. They want to see.

• 2:00Ryan Clark?

They probably want to know how strong he is. But the rest of the folks. He was 160.

• 2:08Speaker 05

  Damn.

• 2:30Ryan Clark?

Alright, what's up y'all? We're here with the Stinglees. Big Sting, Lil Sting. Big Sting. This is Big Sting now. This is Lil Sting. Derrick Stingley, senior and junior.

• 2:41Speaker 04

He changed it. So, I was always Sting. He was Lil Sting. So then he was like, "Dad, I'm Sting now. You gotta go by something." So I either go by Coach Sting or Big Sting.

• 2:49Ryan Clark?

Alright, so we're going Coach Sting. We're going Coach Sting. This is Fred Taylor, Channing Crowder. I'm Ryan Clark. I've known you guys, you know, for an extremely long time. It's so, it's so good to be at a football game. See him warming up. See you and your wife in the stands and just get an opportunity to see the hard work that, you know, you both put in to get to this position. I know the story. The story has been told, you know, publicly before as well. But what was it like for you, Big Sting, to be the age you were in? To have a hero, someone you idolize? Father drafted in the first round, coming into his own with the Patriots? And then, you know, obviously the hit by Tatum that I would have to think changed all of your lives?

• 3:35Speaker 04

It did. Growing up with an NFL dad, you don't even put that title NFL dad. It's just dad, right? And I see what he does. I saw him training, working out. Heck, I even saw him, he would bring home, back in the 70s, they would have the real film that you had to like thread through the machine and he'll put it on the wall and we were watching tape and I'm just looking like, what is he looking at? I'm a young boy, but you know, I see him taking notes and all that. I see how he prepared and his approach. I see what he'd do during the offseason. Like, my dad would do ballet during the offseason. He did karate during the offseason. So it was more to it than just football. The way he approached it was like, you know, I gotta do more.

• 4:18Speaker 04

I gotta do something else that's gonna work my whole entire body or mind or whatever. And then just to see him out there and play when he was playing, it was just graceful. It was, you know, he did whatever he had to do. It was 110% always. It was never just, I'm just here, I'm gonna just run my route, I'm gonna do it to the best, I'm gonna block to the best, I'm gonna run to the best. Whatever his ability was, he made sure that he was over all that. And naturally, the hit, you know, him being paralyzed, you know, as a family, and especially with me as a young boy, I had no clue what was going on. Cause naturally, it was a preseason game. You know, we're not in, it's in Oakland, California. We're home back in Chicago. That's where we were living at the time.

• 5:03Speaker 04

And when that happened and everyone was saying, hey, you know, your dad is in a situation to where, you know, there's a chance he'll never be able to walk again. I couldn't even fathom that, knowing what I seen. The last time I seen my dad walking around the house, you know, this big muscular guy, you know, in control of his whole entire body, like, they're telling me he can't move, he can't walk. Like, I didn't process that or I didn't even accept it until like months later. I saw him at the hospital. They transported him from Cali to Chicago. It was like, the hit happened in August. He got back home to Chicago in December.

• 5:45Speaker 04

Yeah, because it was crucial. It was hit and miss. There was a couple times they wrote him off. Like, he wouldn't even make it through the night. It was that bad. Then when he got home, when we got to the hospital, and they brought us in, and my dad was laying there on the bed. I was like, damn, okay, he can get up. I know he could. And I walked over to the bed and I said, Dad, get up.

• 6:08Speaker 04

And he ain't move. And I actually, man, I'm six or seven years old. I actually climbed on top of the bed, climbed on his chest. I said, Dad, get up. They say you can't move. Dad, get up. They say you can't move. And he just sat there. He didn't say nothing. And all I remember seeing was a tear go down his face. And my uncle, his brother, grabbed me off, off him. And as I was being picked up off him,

• 6:35Speaker 04

I registered that's what paralyzed me. He can't move.

• 6:41Ryan Clark?

Derrick, I'm sure you only hear stories, you know, about Darryl Stingley, your grandfather. What were some of the conversations that Big Sting shared with you about who he was before the injury? The, the life that they had and then who he became?

• 7:01Speaker 06

Well, let's see, he, he passed in with, oh, '06, '07?

• 7:05Speaker 04

  '07.

• 7:06Speaker 06

So from that point, as far back as my memory goes, oh, that's really like the first thing that I, that I really hear about. So he would always say, like my dad would always say, oh, he's, he's up there playing football, running around in heaven right now. Like, like just, you know, just having a blast and, and just being who he was, like that my dad knows. So like hearing stories about that, um, I mean, that's, that's really all I think about. Like, I don't, you know, like, I don't know what, obviously what he knows or what my dad knows. So I, I just think of the helmet sitting in the house, uh, my, my grandpa's helmet, seeing all the signatures on it,

• 7:44Speaker 06

uh, from all the past teammates and, and then me as a little kid, I, I, I got a Sharpie, I run it, I put my name on it. And then he got mad, but like, you know, like, like, like, like stuff like that though, like, that doesn't register in my mind, like the bad or the negative stuff about like my grandpa, like, I, I mean, you know, football, like, but, you know, it's more than football.

• 8:08Speaker 04

And Derrick was young, right? So he's six years old when my father passed. And we lived, at that point, I'm living in Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge. And we would only go to Chicago to visit for holidays, whether it was Christmas one year, Thanksgiving the following year, we would rotate them. And Derrick is like, you know, baby, one, two, three, four, five. So his memory doesn't really register on all of that. He just sees some of the photos of him being in the home with my dad. The main thing he remembers is a pool table. The pool table, because he would always sit on the pool table and roller balls, whatever. So naturally, when he brought himself a home. He got himself a pool table.

• 8:51Ryan Clark?

God damn, that's an NFL purchase though. You know what I mean? Whether you gonna play pool or not, you gonna have a pool table.

• 8:58Channing Crowder?

You gotta decide, dining table, pool table. Man, ain't nobody eating over here, gotta get that pool table.

• 9:05Channing Crowder?

Big, I gotta ask, man, with, with that, because we all, we all saw that. We, we know what happened, we know the story, we seen the, seen it play. But that didn't make you run from football at all? Because I'll tell you, like, my dad had double knee, double hip playing. I had a bunch of knee surgeries. So now I have a son and I'm kinda like, hey, man, let's go hit that baseball a little bit. Let's go, let's go shoot that basketball. That, like, being that close to a tragic thing like that didn't discourage any football in your mind?

• 9:33Speaker 04

Well, we're a football family. So, like, my, my dad's dad, my grandfather, he played football, you know? And my uncle played, well, he got drafted by the Cowboys, but he didn't go. He decided to start up McDonald's and became one of the top black owners in, in the country at McDonald's. Then my dad played, of course, and then I would talk with my dad about it. He was like, son, what happened to me was a freak accident. You know, how many guys have actually been paralyzed? He said, look, if you go out there thinking that something may happen, it's gonna find you. He said, as football players, what we do, we assume the risk.

• 10:15Speaker 04

He said, but just learn how to play it the right way. Protect yourself, you know, understand how to tackle, understand even how to fall, understand how to get tackled. All the above to where you know that if you do these things properly and hopefully your opponent is playing in the same fashion, that you're gonna walk away from it. He said, don't go out there walking on eggshells. If you're gonna play, play it 1,000% the way it's supposed to be played.

• 10:45Speaker 04

That's it. It's like you can't, you can't think about it. And we all know, all of us football players. We know if you go out there and just be like, nah, I'm not gonna go in there half. You go, something gonna happen.

• 10:57Fred Taylor?

People ask me if my kids are gonna play. Cause they'll see my boys, they were all big. They were like, Freddie, man, bring your boys out to my team. Like, but they gonna be straddling. Like, you can't be one foot in, one foot out. That's how things happen.

• 11:10Speaker 04

  No doubt.

• 11:10Fred Taylor?

Right? But I wanted to ask Sting, Big Sting acknowledged that you have a football family. Your great grandfather down to yourself. Did you always feel that football was your destiny? Or was there a point in time where you considered doing something different?

• 11:27Speaker 06

Nah, I mean, it was, it was always football from the start.

• 11:31Speaker 06

Even as a little kid, like the teams that my dad was coaching. Oh, I mean, I'm, I'm out there doing DB drills with, with his players. And, and we doing a route tree in the front yard. Or like every, almost every day we're playing catch or something. Like, it was, it was always football. But, you know, there was a brief time period, oh, in middle school, like, it was just basketball at that point. But I wasn't good, so like, that don't, that don't. But, but anyways, but yeah, it was, it was always football. It wouldn't, that wasn't a thought, a second thought or nothing. Like, that was just.

• 12:01Ryan Clark?

Sting, being in Baton Rouge, I would always hear about you. Honestly, the way I started working with the team was I got on the phone with your dad. And that was how we started working with the Bootleggers. When did you start to take it seriously, though? Like, there is, there's running the route tree in the front yard. There's playing pitch and catch with my pops. And, and then there's, okay, we're gonna make a go at this thing for college. And give it, maybe have an opportunity to play in the NFL. When did that click for you?

• 12:33Speaker 06

I feel like when it, when it comes to college football, like knowing. That I was good enough to play college football. That was probably when I got the offer from LSU, less miles.

• 12:44Speaker 06

But before that point, like I wouldn't, you know, like I was, you know, I was just doing it. I was just playing, playing ball. But then after that, like everything else started rolling in and I'm just seeing like a whole different world of just sports like that's associated. Well, I'm seeing a whole different world of, of football, like in, in this whole aspect of you can do something with this. You could do something for your family, do something for yourself, like all that. So, um, and then I say, when it comes to the NFL level aspect of it, like I probably didn't think that I was good enough for the NFL until I seen like people that I went against in college or, or like bootleggers. Like seeing them go on and, and make it to the league and make plays. And I'm like, oh wait, I guarded that person.

• 13:27Speaker 06

Like I, I know how to do this, like I, I can do this and then, you know, and then I'm doing this.

• 13:33Ryan Clark?

That's actually, but here's the funny, but this humble is all pro in the world. Oh, I might be able to get in front of him.

• 13:42Ryan Clark?

That's how he really act though, man.

• 13:43Speaker 06

  Really?

• 13:44Ryan Clark?

Bro, we put him out there and you know, he'd be like, yeah, Sting, you got such. And the thing was because he was extremely good, he was number one player in the country as a corner. Right? So every wide receiver we played to them, it was like, well, if I go beat him, you know, now the rest of the world, social media or whatever it is, like I could get my stripes and I had never seen somebody care less. Like legitimately, bro, like he was just out there playing with his homeboys, having fun. And the other team talking, they talking crazy, the coach pointing at him and he just.

• 14:19Speaker 04

  Business as usual.

• 14:22Speaker 04

Hey man, we played the game the right way. That's it. We just, just do it.

• 14:26Ryan Clark?

But you could tell he, he was just taught, Big Sting, having seen it, right? Having been professional in two sports yourself, baseball and football coached. I mean, she the first time we crossed paths was in, in Pittsburgh. As a father, you know, we sort of sometimes have these, these rose colored glasses of who our children are. But I often think like the guys that play professionally and have seen some things, you're more realistic about it. When was the point that you looked at him and you thought he could be something special?

• 15:00Speaker 04

It was pretty young because knowing the fact that I know how to evaluate and see talent. And when I say young RC, I mean young. He was playing at the YMCA at like, he had to be no more than five or six years old. And I was naturally coaching the team and it was a little flag football team. And you know, as coaches, you stand on the field, you stand behind the play. If you're on defense, you stand behind the play in offense. And I'm putting, putting the, the defense together, the scheme. And we found a team where we was playing that team that they were a throwing team. They, they knew how to pass the ball. And at that time Derrick still had, he had great hands then.

• 15:36Ryan Clark?

  Yeah.

• 15:36Speaker 04

And I was thinking to myself, if they throw the ball anywhere near this boy, he's gonna intercept it. Like it's gonna be picked off because you were still talking five or six year old kids who really don't know the game. But then this team had a few athletes. And I said, okay, this might be his game to shine. And I remember they threw a pass. He was playing, he was playing corner, but somehow he got into the middle of the field. Maybe it was in a cover three, whatever, and it was a deep middle ball. But he went to intercept the pass. And the body control he had to where he avoided the, the receiver. And went over him and kinda like his hands was outstretched out in front of him.

• 16:13Ryan Clark?

  Yeah.

• 16:14Speaker 04

He picked it off and ran it in like for a pick six. And I, I still back there with my hands on my head like, oh my God. Like, how could somebody that young do that or think that? Now that's when I first saw the greatness. And then it just kept being consistent, consistent. And I remember saying to myself, and I would say this to people nowadays. He always played up, meaning if he was six, he could play with 10 year olds. If he was 10, he could play with 14 year olds. If he was 14, he could play with 18 year olds. He was 18, naturally he played at LSU.

• 16:48Ryan Clark?

  Yeah.

• 16:48Speaker 04

22 year olds. And it was always been that way where I said, he's just as good as guys that much older than him. And the skill set never changed.

• 16:58Ryan Clark?

  Yeah.

• 16:58Speaker 04

And I say that to this day, his skill set never changed. You know, some people talk about all the other stuff behind it like, okay, he's just gotta be available and all this. But his skill set's always been, in my opinion, elite.

• 17:10Channing Crowder?

Sting, Sting and Big Sting. That's what we're established on.

• 17:14Ryan Clark?

Yeah. Well, he said he's, he's Sting now.

• 17:16Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 17:17Channing Crowder?

  He's Sting.

• 17:18Ryan Clark?

  He little Sting to me.

• 17:19Speaker 04

He used to be Lil Sting back in the day.

• 17:20Ryan Clark?

I'm guessing. He, he little Sting to me.

• 17:23Channing Crowder?

Big Sting, even listen to Pops talk. And since you was five, he was coaching you. Did that put pressure? Or now, as a grown man, looking back, did that put pressure on your relationship? Because at home, as pops, but he got to tighten your ass up when you when you out there on that field. At any time, with him being so involved in your career, did that put pressure on your relationship?

• 17:43Speaker 06

  Nah, nah, that's not even...

• 17:47Speaker 06

Nah, like, it's more of the... I've seen him coach grown men and get on grown men, but when he coaching me, like, I'm saying he's my dad. Like, he knows how to... If I'm pouting while working out, like, he gonna be like, a look or something. And then, alright, now we getting back to what we gotta do. If he's coaching the team or whatever, like, like, in high school, he up in the press box. And like, he'll give a look, or he'll whistle, and then I'll look and be like, ah, yeah, I know I just messed up. Like, okay, I got you. Like, then I, you know, go make a play or something like that. But, I mean, nah, the pressure, that was never... Not from him. Like, I've never felt like that, ever, so...

• 18:32Fred Taylor?

Yeah, aside from the pressure, who was tougher? Your mom, your dad, or your own expectations?

• 18:38Speaker 06

Nah, my own expectations are higher than what anybody else. Like, I told RC...

• 18:46Channing Crowder?

I was gonna get to it. I was gonna get to it.

• 18:49Speaker 06

A little something that I wanted. But, you know, like, you still got time to do it, hopefully.

• 18:54Speaker 06

Like, stuff like that, like, I... Something might look perfect from, you know, the outside end, but, I mean, you know, we all players. Like, we know what we're capable of doing. And if it doesn't go according to how you see it, then you're just mad. Like, you're like, what? I could've did this or that, so...

• 19:12Channing Crowder?

Alright, Sting, so people think I'm a liar, right? And I've said this on TV multiple times.

• 19:20Ryan Clark?

I feel like you could have been Travis Hunter before Travis Hunter. I 100%, I might have made this up in my head. I make a lot of stuff up in my head, right? I was like, okay, he's gonna be, he's gonna be the best corner in football as a freshman and he's gonna return. And then I was like, then they're gonna work him into offense as a sophomore. Watch how I do this, because we, because that's LSU, we are gonna build a Heisman campaign for Sting. He's gonna wear number seven as a junior. He gonna play offense and defense. And I was like, it's gonna be Mama Sting and Big Sting, and at that time you were still Lil Sting. And Lil Sting, and they gonna win the Heisman. And I was like, I think he can do it.

• 20:01Ryan Clark?

Was that ever something, though, that you had in your mind headed into college at LSU? That you would be able to accomplish something like that?

• 20:10Speaker 06

Yeah, but I wouldn't put it in terms of, of thinking about the Heisman. Like, I would just keep it like, I mean, growing up, playing offense and defense, like, that's what everybody did. High school, offense, defense, 707, y'all need me for a jump ball.

• 20:28Ryan Clark?

This is thing, I was scared of your daddy. I was like, I was like, man, we really could just throw it to him every play. But I was like, that'd probably be overuse to the kid, the young man. That'd be abuse.

• 20:38Speaker 06

But, but I mean, like, like, simple stuff like that, and then getting to college, oh, at LSU, just, I'm thinking that's, that's my norm, like, why, you know, like, why stop it now? But, you know, obviously, it, it didn't go according to plan, but, I mean, it could have been done, but I, I wouldn't have done it in, in hopes of getting the Heisman. Like, I just, would have just done it because that's what I've been doing, so.

• 21:02Ryan Clark?

Oh, so that was my hopes? It's okay. That's fine. I can have hopes for you.

• 21:05Speaker 04

Let me chime in on that. So, at his official home visit, when Coach O and Coach Raymond came to the house, Coach O talked about that. You know, naturally, He was a five-star top corner in the country. He also could have been a top wide receiver in the country. We both know that. And Coach O mentioned, he was like, hey, man, you know, we want him to return. I was like, do punt returns. I was like, that's cool. He was like, hey, we want to put him on offense too. And I said, well, Coach O, I said, look, we're talking a kid that's coming from 2A football. And you want to put him right, right now, his freshman year to play both sides of the ball? I say, let him just play corner first. Let's see what he can do in the SEC first at corner.

• 21:49Speaker 04

And then his sophomore year, if that changes, you know, if you feel like he's, he mastered the corner position, put him on offense. And that's his sophomore year. Well, we got, we got COVID and everything kind of changes.

• 22:01Ryan Clark?

  Yeah.

• 22:02Speaker 04

And it, it just never, never happened from that point.

• 22:05Ryan Clark?

  I forgot about that.

• 22:06Speaker 04

So, and then the following year was like, okay, this year three, let's go into it. You know, getting ready for the season, he started feeling something in his foot. And at that point, it was, it wasn't happening.

• 22:17Ryan Clark?

But Sting, like you mentioned, see if he could handle. Did you just say? You said, see if he could handle playing corner and Sting, I'll fight you.

• 22:27Fred Taylor?

No, no, he put an emphasis on SEC.

• 22:29Speaker 04

  I said, right.

• 22:30Fred Taylor?

He put an emphasis on SEC.

• 22:32Ryan Clark?

  I will fight you.

• 22:33Speaker 04

  I see.

• 22:34Ryan Clark?

I'm not gonna fight you. You got swole since Sting got to the league.

• 22:39Fred Taylor?

You don't see underneath that dry fit? Go over there you want to.

• 22:43Speaker 04

I see. Look, I just, I just wanted him to have, first of all, I know he had the confidence, but I wanted him to know that he can do it. He can play corner. SEC ball was different. And I was like, both ways? I've seen him at the Dunham School, play both sides of the ball, never come off the field because he's also returning kicks. He's punting the ball. He's punt returner. He's, he's the long snapper. He's the, he's the holder. He's all of that. I'm like, he never gets a break. And I have to be in the headset and say, hey, y'all, y'all need to give him a blow. Give him a break. Because he's not going to come out unless they tell him to come out. Unless he return or punt return and then he gotta go in and he'll look at the little guy that was his backup saying, give me one. But I didn't want that in college because now I'm like, he's still gotta protect himself now.

• 23:28Speaker 04

It's different. And I was like, these boys, they're trying to make it to the next level. So they're gonna hit harder. They're gonna play harder. I want him to be sure that he can shoot, come off the field okay.

• 23:39Fred Taylor?

Right, and with that thing, what was your welcome to college moment? Like a play that you remember like, oh, this is real?

• 23:46Speaker 06

Practice. Yeah, I'm gonna say it wasn't nothing in the game.

• 23:51Speaker 04

  Jamar every day.

• 23:52Speaker 06

I remember my first day of practice. I remember having a helmet on and running. And everything is blurry, like I can't see nothing straight. Justin Jefferson hitching goal, we both fall down at the top of the row like, and I'm thinking he's still running. Oh, Jamar, now I gotta deal with Jamar over here. Now I got Terrace Marshall, everybody forget about Terrace Marshall, but he was monster. Then I got Terrace Marshall, the next thing you know, you got Clyde at receiver at one. They ain't empty, like it was just, everything, everything was just going through like my head. Like, oh my, first off, it's like, this is LSU, like, I'm on the field at LSU in the indoor. Oh, then it's like, I was just, in high school, I don't have a dorm yet.

• 24:35Speaker 06

  Like, I don't, like, I don't, like, the first couple of weeks, I didn't have a dorm.

• 24:41Speaker 06

I mean, but, but it was really that though. Like, it was, it was, it was that, oh, just being around all them, like, seeing all them, like, like, this is real, like.

• 24:49Fred Taylor?

  Iron sharp, right, iron.

• 24:50Speaker 06

Like, for real, like, that's, that's just how it was, like.

• 24:54Speaker 00

Having uncontrolled eosinophilic esophagitis, or E O E, can mean you're stuck in many ways. Like, cutting your food into tiny pieces.

• 25:04Speaker 00

Or stuck, chewing food for a long time.

• 25:08Speaker 00

Dupixentipilumab, a prescription medicine for patients one year and older weighing at least 33 pounds, can help with that. It's a breakthrough treatment that can reduce inflammation in the esophagus and improve swallowing.

• 25:21Speaker 00

How about this? Dupixent is not a steroid. It proactively treats EOE so you can get ahead of it.

• 25:53Ryan Clark?

We saw the one-on-ones. Obviously, you know how life works. Those tapes get released and people were able to have the direct comparison to what Jamar and Justin had become at that time versus you as a... weren't you 17 as a freshman? Like, the entire year, right?

• 26:11Speaker 06

  No, not the whole year.

• 26:12Ryan Clark?

Not the whole year, okay. And so now, you come into your own and you're having an opportunity to play against them. You know that you could play against them. What was the entire 2019 season like? Like, one of the greatest college football teams of all time. What was that run for you as a freshman?

• 26:33Speaker 06

I mean, it's hard to think about as a freshman, thinking about it like that. But I think even more like, the whole... all right, so the whole defense. The whole defense. I remember we're in spring and we're killing the offense. Like, everything on defense is clicking. And then I remember we got, I think, like, what was it? Like, May? Like, you normally get May off or something like that. Then you come back for camp. And I remember now we're in summer camp and people like, well, all right. So now we get to summer camp, the offense, they're killing it. We couldn't stop them from nothing. So we're sitting there like, what did Joe Burrow just go do, like, within this one month that we had off? What is different? What's going on? But I remember people like Calebon, Chaz Song.

• 27:17Speaker 06

Like, he leading these defensive meetings, like, late at night. Like, we got bed check at 9:30 or 10:00, whatever it was. And we sitting up in this meeting like... Trying to figure out what are we doing wrong? And it just, you know, like, that's what I think about more. Like, I'm not, it doesn't seem like craziness. It just seems like I'm just part of a team that's just, you know, like, that's good. Like, I'm just here.

• 27:42Channing Crowder?

Speaking about like the film and all, man, because you, like you said, you top, like, you know what I'm saying, all pro, like, you what the best corner in the world. Is it, is it just because you're a stupid athlete? Stupid vertical, stupid forty, like, the numbers are there. Does it have a lot to do with coaching and film? Or are you just, because you line up against anybody, like, shit, you really not gonna catch this ball?

• 28:03Speaker 06

Yeah, you can only be so good with just that. Like, you gotta know what you're doing out there. Like, if you, if we lined up here and you want to take a crazy outside, or at least you're not gonna do this, that, that, and you gotta, you gotta be able to eliminate stuff, doesn't it? That's how you're good. Like, I don't, I don't see it no other way than just being fast, or those people normally don't just make it that far in the league, so.

• 28:27Channing Crowder?

It's like, who said that? Devante, the Terminator thing, where he can pull it down and see your leverage and see different things, and like, you process it like that same way of, okay, cut splits. Okay, I can, he can have these three routes. He can't do that, can't do this. Like, you can, you can go through it like that in your mind, and that's why you dominate the game.

• 28:46Speaker 06

Yeah, I mean, you have to be able to do that. Like, every position got his own little, little thing, like, we, but you gotta do that. You have to be able to do that. If you're not capable of doing it, you're not gonna make it too far, like.

• 28:58Channing Crowder?

Yeah, I played against Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez, and them boys, they was eating my ass up every play.

• 29:04Ryan Clark?

Hey, Ben, I used to be like, hey, Troy, Troy, hey, woo! Help! I do want to ask, you know, you both, and, you know, whoever wants to answer first, Cam, you prepare?

• 29:23Ryan Clark?

To be great, right? And you get to, you get to that point. You get to that level. Obviously, after his freshman year, the world is buzzing. There were people, Mel Kiper is talking during that time. And he said Derrick Stingley comes out now, he's a top five pick. When he got to school, coach, oh, I remember the press conference. Shoot, Derrick Stingley the best player we got in team now. You know what I mean? Like, all those things are happening. But then you do have COVID and you do have the foot injury. You deal with some injuries early on in, in your career. How difficult Stingley, after being on top for so long, was it to deal with some of the adversity you went through?

• 30:03Speaker 06

So, you know, you're, you're bringing up a lot of the, like, all the praises and then all the, the worst things that were said. But like, I'm here. Like, I'm, you wanna say something good? Okay, cool. You wanna say something bad? All right. Now, I just gotta, you know, just be me. Like, early NFL, like, well, my first, second year, like, okay, I, I got hurt, but, I mean, when I, you know, when I played and I show what I'm doing now, like, okay, people can see what, what I'm, what I'm capable of. But at the same time, like, I, I never thought that I wasn't who I am. Like, I don't, I don't, I don't really see a, a bad thing within none of that.

• 30:45Speaker 06

Like, the injuries, like, I learned, I learned how to, how to deal with this. I learned how to, I don't know, like, like, just be me, like, myself, like, be within my own company, like, like, be able to do what I can do now, like, at a higher level, so.

• 31:02Ryan Clark?

Pops, I, I know it's hard as, as a father, though, cuz he is like that, actually. That's why I used to be out there, people be cussing Stingley.

• 31:13Ryan Clark?

See, why you make the man look like that? Because that's, that's literally what it'd be, man. We get the calls, Stingley be chilling. Daddy might be talking, yeah. Oh, wait, Pops, I'll be right back. You know what I mean? That's just what it was. But I know how it is as a father, and you feel these things deeply. What was some of, you know, just your advice, the support of you and your wife during some of those times?

• 31:36Speaker 04

The major thing was, even with the good, you know, the bad is gonna always come, right? And I would always say, block out the outside noise. You're only in control of what you can control. Everything else doesn't matter. You can't change someone else's opinion. You can't change somebody else's take on something. You can only do what you supposed to do in that moment. If you're available, let's be consistent in what we're doing, right? Let's make sure that you're ready mentally, physically, you know? And that means practice, that means preparation, all the above to where you're gonna be. We're striving to be great all the time, but we wanna be more consistent if we can't be great all the time.

• 32:19Speaker 04

Now, when it comes to the bad, the injuries, or whatever else you wanna call it, you gotta attack that situation just the exact same. What's the solution? How do we get better from this? How do we come back better? You know, okay, yeah, we're in a dark place, but the dark place ain't that dark. It's more so like, you're here and you gotta get back to where you wanna be. So just get through it. Attack your treatment, attack your rehab, the exact same way you would be if you was lining up against one of those top dogs. And that's how it works.

• 32:51Channing Crowder?

And Pop, being a coach dad too, and I have two sons now that are younger, I wanna go to another side of it, cuz both of y'all is cute with light eyes.

• 33:04Channing Crowder?

I knew it was coming. I'm gonna ask Buck, I'm gonna say, I done seen them both like, man, come on, man. I don't wanna go to the club with y'all two. But when was the birds and the bees talk? When was the real talk? Cuz like, my son now, I, we just recently saw my 13-year-old talking to some girl on Instagram. Not crazy, but just, oh, yeah, you going to summer camp? I go to summer camp with you. Well, I was the approach to let little Sting or Big Sting now, whatever the hell Sting is now. When did that happen, though?

• 33:36Speaker 04

I don't, I don't think it actually like happened, happened, but like, you know, it's just, hey, man, this is what young men, young boys do, you know? Be respectful, those things. Don't put yourself in a situation to where you can lose something that you have. You know, we don't wanna be caught up in some craziness or whatever. Just keep it to where you're not being exposed for, oh, this guy did this, this. We don't want all that. Although, I'm good with our family by saying, the outside noise doesn't ever matter, ever. But with something like that, it can take away from what you want. You're different. You have an opportunity to change your status, your family's status. So you don't want to get yourself caught up.

• 34:21Speaker 04

So it was more so just respect. If you're gonna be involved, you know, just stay with, on that level of respect and nothing else would matter at that point where you won't get yourself in any trouble.

• 34:33Ryan Clark?

Sting, you don't talk. So, how'd you ever get a date?

• 34:38Speaker 06

  Oh my god.

• 34:39Ryan Clark?

Like, I'm just, it is just pure handsomeness.

• 34:43Speaker 06

  Showed them them green eyes.

• 34:44Ryan Clark?

Handsomeness, talent, and kindness. Like, I don't know what it is. Like, you just, I can see you like holding the door and, you know, somebody just being like, "Thank you." And he'll just be like, "You're very welcome." And then, like, is that, because you don't talk.

• 34:56Speaker 06

See, that half a million dollar chain ain't gonna hurt.

• 35:03Speaker 04

  Oh my god.

• 35:06Speaker 06

Alright, so growing up, when I was a little kid, we would be in the car, I'd be sitting in the backseat, pops be driving. He would say, "I need you to repeat a couple of things." He would be like, "Whenever you're talking to somebody, look them, look them straight in the eyes. Whenever you're around women, respect." Which is what he just said. And that comes along when I hold the door open. Like, that, you know, like, simple stuff like, like, that's not, but you know, I got my girl over there. I can't see it right.

• 35:34Ryan Clark?

Hey, that's that nervous answer. Like, I only hold the door for you, though. Like, I used to hold the door for everybody, because that was respect for everybody. Now, I just respect you.

• 35:44Speaker 06

They just stare at each other, they weren't even talking.

• 35:49Speaker 04

It was funny. Yeah, I'll put him on the spot, man. But it's real, it's real, it's real.

• 35:55Speaker 06

Like, I used to have to repeat stuff that he would make me.

• 35:57Speaker 04

Your parents, man, I think they've done an amazing job, man. And like I said, we're always rooting for you, ever since RC, you know, would miss you way back when we started this show. But Big Sting.

• 36:09Fred Taylor?

A lot of times, it's a family's dream, right? To be able to see their kid go off and fulfill their dreams. But it's for 1%, right? And you've seen it all as a former player, as a dad of a player, as a coach, youth, all levels. A lot of people go crazy thinking, alright, my kid is gonna be the next such and such. What advice would you share with families? You know what I'm saying?

• 36:36Speaker 04

  Good question.

• 36:37Fred Taylor?

That have these thoughts or dreams that this is gonna happen?

• 36:41Speaker 04

You have to take a look in the mirror first. You do have to say, okay, do you pass the eye test first? Because you can't be, what, 5'10", 250 pounds thinking you're gonna be a nose tap. You can't, right? You may play it in high school, you could get maybe D3, but you just can't. Now, sometimes some people slip through the cracks. You get 5'9", 150-pound guys that can return a punt or two, and he's on the team, and he's all-pro or whatever you want to call it. If you don't take that look in the mirror and just assume, and you put all this time, energy, and possibly some money

• 37:18Fred Taylor?

  A lot of money.

• 37:18Speaker 04

into your kid's childhood dream, you might be out of some money, and your kid may be disappointed, and you may be disappointed as well. Now, your life, or that kid's life, may go somewhere else. They may not be able to get to the NFL. They may have to work at a factory or driving, whatever, whatever. My thing is, just make sure that you're being real.

• 37:43Fred Taylor?

  Yup.

• 37:44Speaker 04

Everybody feel like, if I played alongside someone, like, let's say, where Derrick played at 2A school in Baton Rouge, the Dunham School. The school is really known for their theater and the arts and the science. So you got all these other kids that may have played alongside him saying, "Hell, I scored touchdowns too. I made big hits, I made tackles, I did all the above. If he could do it, I can do it." But you really can't, because there's an evaluation of it, right? We're talking, these players make crazy money. These evaluators, they're not gonna give them the time of day. If they take that look and say, okay, my son is probably on this level,

• 38:29Speaker 04

and I just want him to have fun, and maybe he can get some life experiences out of this, lifelong friendships out of this, to where he can have a productive life moving forward. Opposed to saying, this coach ain't helped my son do this, or we had a chance, but they had this guy playing in front of my kid, then they're disgruntled. The kid becomes a certain type of way. No telling what life directions he may take, because he felt like it wasn't on him, it was on somebody else, and it was their fault. That's why I always say, take a look in the mirror first. You gotta, you gotta understand that it's just not for everybody.

• 39:04Fred Taylor?

  Correct.

• 39:05Speaker 04

And then take some advice. Sometimes, like me, if somebody asks me to evaluate their kid or whatever, I give them the straight up, now, I don't ever say anything bad about a kid. I always say, he got some limitations. He got some stuff he gotta work on. You know, that type of thing. And, and if they can't take that, then they're not being realistic. Like, it's probably less than 1% of, of kids that can get to the league.

• 39:29Fred Taylor?

It's a lot more competitive now, because they're starting at such a young age.

• 39:32Speaker 04

No doubt. I mean, our, our kids started at a young age, and they've been around it, right? And, and they know the sport. You know, when it comes to a football mind, they may have it, but now you gotta work, it's, the, the stars gotta align so much for it to work, to the point where, you know, you, you got genetics, you got the want to, like, he didn't, I didn't tell him to play. I didn't say, you, you're gonna play. It's he wanted to play. And then it got to a point where I said, alright, you have a chance. So, now you have to do some things different than the average kid does. Now, we may have to get up at 5:00 in the morning. You may have to do this. You may have to not go to Sonic every day.

• 40:15Fred Taylor?

  That was stupid.

• 40:19Speaker 04

To get to your goal. When he got drafted, someone asked me, how do I feel? Like, man, how do you feel it was that day? It was draft night. And I said, there are no words. I have no words. I'm extremely happy because all I can see was still that little bitty boy that picked off that ball in front of that other little boy. And I put my hand on my head like this. But we didn't know. We didn't know what was going to take place. We didn't know. We tried to get to U-High. We couldn't get in U-High. We had to go to the Donald School. We was nervous.

• 40:55Ryan Clark?

They, they, U-High answered my call for years.

• 40:59Speaker 04

We was nervous, but then LSU come calling. Heck, that 2019 team, heck, you know, he played against stars. He played against other guys and he got the call. But that's the 1%.

• 41:12Fred Taylor?

  Yeah.

• 41:12Speaker 04

But the parents need to understand that.

• 41:14Ryan Clark?

I tell people all the time, don't lie to your kids, right? Don't tell your kids that they can do anything that they want because that ain't true.

• 41:20Fred Taylor?

  Right.

• 41:21Ryan Clark?

Right? You can do anything that you want to do that's within the potential that God has blessed you.

• 41:25Fred Taylor?

That's why I like how you put it. Like you put limitations. They have limitations. That's a great way to put it.

• 41:31Ryan Clark?

I had, like, I had limitations. You know what I mean? But it was understanding those limitations that allowed me to reach the potential that I had. It's like, okay, I may not be able to run 4-3. I gotta learn angles, right? I may not be able to jump a 40. Okay, I gotta beat you to the spot. And I think like those are the other things that if you are real with yourself and when you're looking at your child, like you start to try to, to figure out those things, thing, you know? You being an all-pro is like the least surprising thing that's happened in a long time to me, right? And to me, it was if God allowed you to have your health, it was a when, not an if.

• 42:12Ryan Clark?

And when you look at this year, how do you assess your play? Do you feel you played as well as you possibly could? Or are you still searching for a ceiling?

• 42:25Speaker 06

Well, that goes back, that goes back to, um, we was talking about earlier, like, um, there's a lot of plays that was left out there on the field, like, and I, you know, I feel like everybody that plays any sport, like, you always say that you, you missed out on a lot of stuff, but I, I had seven picks this year, but I could have had like, I don't know, like 20, like, I like, like, I dropped a lot, like, for real, like, I, like, I, why am I not catching that ball? Like, I, I should catch that ball, like, and then I look at him in the stands and he mean looking at me and, and all that, and I'm like, I, trust me, I, I'm with you, like, I'm with you, like, I, but, but, you know, stuff like that, like, whether it's a, it could be that, it could

• 43:07Speaker 06

be a tackle that I missed, it could be like, oh, running back was running with the ball like this, why ain't just punched the ball a lot, like, that, that, that counts too, like, it's not just about picks, like, it's about the whole, and it, it was just a lot of, so, yes, oh, I feel like, I feel like there, there is a lot of, there's a lot of room to grow, and it's, it's gonna happen, like, it has to happen.

• 43:31Ryan Clark?

I was at the, the Dallas game, and we talked afterwards, I was like, bro, I've never seen you drop football.

• 43:36Speaker 06

  Yes, that was the first.

• 43:37Ryan Clark?

You know, he's making a lie out of me, here I am on TV, I was like, oh, no, I was like, Sting got better ball skills than Jamar, Justin, I was like, he's never gonna drop a pick. We get to the game, he, boom, Cooper Rush trying to give it to him, take it, Derek, take it, Derek.

• 43:54Speaker 06

  Yeah, that's crazy.

• 43:57Speaker 00

Having uncontrolled eosinophilic esophagitis, or E O E, can mean you're stuck in many ways, like, cutting your food into tiny pieces.

You're talking about your skill set. You can't escape just the whole practice piece of it. Earlier, I asked you about your welcome to college moment. And you mentioned all of those dogs that you had to practice against. And even on the league, in the NFL, you got Diggs, you got Nico, you got Tank. That's another trio of dogs. What's your toughest matchup in practice?

• 45:20Speaker 06

All right, so I mean, everybody know the names that you just named. Oh, with Nico, Tank, and Diggs. You know, the people that be out there. But my whole thing is nobody ever talk about the practice squad players that are out there in practice. Like, they are cold. Like, it's like you not just about to go out there and just, like, oh, go through the motions. Like, you gotta be locked in every single... Like, people like Jerry Wayne. Like, I mean, you know, like, the practice squad players for the Texans that we got. They in the NFL, too. Right, that's what I always say. They're here for a reason. Like, Jerry Wayne, he made a catch in practice. One hand crossed his body and raised on. I was like, bro, like, what are you doing? That is crazy. But, yeah, like, he...

• 46:05Speaker 06

Like, the practice squad players. Oh, Xavier Johnson, he played with CJ at Ohio State. He played receiver. Well, he started out as a quarterback, then running back, then... Now he play receiver. But he had the line. He moving just like Devonte Adams will move around in practice. Like, those are the matchups that you really gotta think about. And just lock it on.

• 46:28Fred Taylor?

That was Cortez Hankton for us. Tez. Tez was that practice squad guy that used to serve all the DBs in practice.

• 46:36Ryan Clark?

They be fresh too though Fred.

• 46:37Fred Taylor?

Yeah, they do be fresh, but.

• 46:38Ryan Clark?

  That's the other part.

• 46:39Fred Taylor?

But Tez was that guy, man. I wanted to see Tez on the field. But you know, like you talking about the eye and the evaluator. I'm like, come on, man. Y'all gotta give him a shot.

• 46:48Speaker 06

  For real, right?

• 46:49Fred Taylor?

Right, but Tez was able to translate that. Not obviously as many reps as he would like in the league. But look at the receivers he's helped go back and give that knowledge to. You know, so I feel you on that.

• 47:02Ryan Clark?

Like me, CJ Stroud has very high opinion of you, right? And he talks about your skill set all of the time. We spoke about the ups and downs of the game though, right? CJ comes off of this amazing rookie season. You guys make it to the playoffs, win a playoff game against Cleveland. So the expectations of who he would be and who your team would be are sky high in training camp. What was it like for him and being around him this year? As things didn't go as well as they did last year?

• 47:35Speaker 06

Well, really, the main thing about CJ, like regardless of win, loss, draw, like he, you know, he gonna praise God. Like that's the first thing he say and everything he talk about. And then he gonna take that faith and that knowledge that he got about God. And just pull that and bring it to every life situation that he has like going on or with the team. Like he gonna, he gonna make sure that he knows how to talk to every single person on the team. Like he, like he just a great look. Like he's one of those people. And whenever like, you know, from the outside, like you see stats and you see, oh, this person did this one year. And then the next year, it really wasn't that. But you know, like on the team, like we don't, we don't see that.

• 48:17Speaker 06

Like we see him go out there, like he competing with, with every fiber of his being. Like he, he gonna go out there and he gonna, he gonna make something work. Like it doesn't, like it doesn't matter like what's going on. Like, hey, I don't know, he can be knocked out. He's still gonna try to throw the ball for a touchdown, like all that. So I don't, I don't see nothing of negative stuff from, from his, from his first year to his second year. Like he's, he's a competitor. Like he, he gonna go out there and do what he gotta do.

• 48:44Channing Crowder?

Yeah, and we had the, we had the Pro Bowl. We all knows the week before the big one. And KC ended up knocking y'all off. Willie and Miko ain't like some of the calls. That was articulated.

• 48:57Speaker 06

  What, Willie Anderson?

• 48:58Channing Crowder?

  Yeah.

• 48:58Ryan Clark?

  Willie went crazy.

• 49:01Channing Crowder?

Oh, Willie. But, you know what I'm saying, all that game, not even getting to that, but this Super Bowl though, because you played these teams at a high level. You played against the Chiefs and all. How you think this game works out?

• 49:12Speaker 06

  You saying that specific game?

• 49:14Ryan Clark?

  Philly, Kansas City?

• 49:14Channing Crowder?

Philly, KC. Yeah, yeah, yeah, this game coming up. We ain't gonna go back for you because I don't want you to get upset because your daddy right here, and his arms are too big.

• 49:21Ryan Clark?

  He never gets upset.

• 49:23Channing Crowder?

Who's that? Oh, yeah, he don't give a damn. He, "Ah, I got that big ass chain on, I'm good." But, no, how you see Philly KC working out?

• 49:34Speaker 06

I don't know too much about Philadelphia this year. We didn't play against, we played against Kansas City twice, so. I mean, I know more about them than the other teams, so I don't know.

• 49:42Ryan Clark?

We're playing Mahomes, right? Because obviously against you, against Houston, and people are like, okay, they got bad calls. You know, the roughing on Willie, the slide, unnecessary roughness. But in preparing to play him as a quarterback, not just the offense, but preparing to play Patrick Mahomes as a quarterback, how do you see him as a player? How do you prepare for him?

• 50:07Speaker 06

Well, as a cornerback with him, just like, I'm not gonna say just like every other mobile quarterback, but like, you know he's gonna extend a play, so now you know you about to go out there and have to play back or a football. Like, it's gonna be a little tougher. Like, you gotta guard him for way longer than you normally would. But, I mean, you just take care of your job at the beginning of the route, like, whether that's at the line or, you know, like after that little hole of the phase, like the middle of the part, like I said, eliminating stuff. Like, you just do your job like that, then you don't really have to worry about nothing. Like, Kamari Lasseter on the other side?

• 50:44Ryan Clark?

  Yeah.

• 50:44Speaker 06

He didn't have a single target in the Chiefs game, like, or I don't think he gave up a completion in the whole playoffs alone. Like, that's him getting his job done. Like, he doing, he taking care of business at the front of, at the line, in the middle of the route, and at the top of the route, and he gonna go catch the ball too, or he'll hit you. Like, you know, like, I think it come down to all that. Like, just do your job, like, that's as simple as that.

• 51:10Ryan Clark?

So, I have a question for both of you, and you guys get to answer it from a different perspective. Who want to start with? You big, you just regular Sting Lee. I keep forgetting how it works. Big, big thing. Father Sting Lee, I go Sting Lee. Like, God, Lee. I make this so confusing. Father Sting Lee, freak. You know, you know Sting, the conversation about legacies are important to families, to last names. Jerome Bettis did our show recently, and when his father dropped him off at Notre Dame, he said, "I don't have a lot of money to give you, but I do have a last name." And he said, "Don't mess it up."

• 51:52Ryan Clark?

You know, from your great-grandfather to your father, Darryl Stingley, you know, to you now passing that name on to your son. What do you want people to think of when they hear the name Stingley?

• 52:07Speaker 04

Well, naturally, I always say we are a football family regardless. I think most people know that. That knows our story. They know that we're a football family.

• 52:16Speaker 04

Before every game, after they have their warmups, team warmups, and he gets off the field, he'll call me and we'll have our moment. And, you know, I give him some words of encouragement or some things that happened throughout the week that him and I talked about that, you know, was just prepare for this, look for this. And I always say, "Hey, man, you're building your legacy."

• 52:43Speaker 04

It's all about what you put out here today and what people are going to remember forever. I said, "You play for the love of what's on the name on your back right now, and that's Stingley Junior, Stingley." Meaning, these are the people that love you and adore you. Yeah, the name on the front is the team that's actually paying you, that's giving you the opportunity to be who you are today. But your legacy is being built. You're writing it today. You in control of what's happening. So go out there and make us proud. And he's been making me proud ever since.

• 53:16Ryan Clark?

Absolutely. For you as well, Sting, everyone knows Derrick Stingley Jr. now, right? You're continuing to show the preparation, the work, the talent, the blessings that have gone into getting you to this point. When it's all said and done for you, what do you want people to think or feel when they hear the name Stingley?

• 53:38Speaker 06

I just, I want the first thing that they say is that I made my dad, my mom, my, you know, like everybody, like proud, like is just a family name, like both sides of the family, like everybody, really, I just made people proud to be a supporter of me, like people who believed in me, like that's all that matters, for real, so.

• 54:03Fred Taylor?

I got the toughest question for the whole show.

• 54:05Speaker 04

  All right.

• 54:06Fred Taylor?

Both of y'all. In your prime, let's just say 19, 19, receiver, DB.

• 54:12Speaker 06

  That's me already.

• 54:13Fred Taylor?

Receiver, DB, right here on the line, who winning?

• 54:17Speaker 04

I've always been strong. He would never get off the line.

• 54:22Speaker 06

You gotta get your hands on him.

• 54:23Speaker 04

  I would choke him out.

• 54:25Speaker 06

You gotta get your hands on him.

• 54:26Speaker 04

  At the line of scrimmage.

• 54:27Ryan Clark?

  Is that love, Al?

• 54:29Speaker 04

He would be, he would be aggressive.

• 54:31Speaker 06

You gotta get your hands on him.

• 54:32Speaker 04

I've taught him how to choke people off the line of scrimmage.

• 54:35Speaker 06

I know what you're gonna do.

• 54:35Speaker 04

And he knows where it's coming from.

• 54:37Speaker 06

I, I, your, your hand's gonna be, and then you gonna try to go right there, like, just a little swat.

• 54:43Speaker 04

At 19, at 19, if I was, he was probably way more gifted than me when I was 19 years old.

• 54:49Speaker 06

  Got it.

• 54:50Speaker 04

I can tell you that, just from seeing him where the phases of his life, he was more gifted, more talented, faster, more explosive. I know I was stronger than him, but he has all the talent, like, because we, we worked on so many things, like, I got this, this phrase, this phrase that I use when I say, you know what, we're gonna work on your weaknesses to make them your strengths, but we're gonna work on your strengths to make them become second nature. And those are the things that I've always done with him. So if I saw a flaw, I went and tried to figure out in my mind on what drill I can do to correct that,

• 55:32Speaker 04

to give him the ability to be better the next time that comes up. And that's how we always worked. I didn't have, naturally, my father was paralyzed, so it was the words that helped me. He had me to where I can physically go through some things and talk it to him and demonstrate it. And so he has the leg up, in my mind, really.

• 55:56Channing Crowder?

  Yeah, that's really.

• 55:57Speaker 04

Mentally, my dad gave me everything. I thought my father was the smartest person in the world. I gave him what I knew about the game and to where he can come to me and say, what do you think? Or I always had to have an answer. So if you ever see me at a game, I'm like laser focused. I feel like I'm out there because I'm watching everything. I'm paying attention to the eb and the flows. I'm paying attention to what happened in this play and that play. To where when him and I have a conversation, whether it's right after the game or whether it's the next day, I have some form of answers, so.

• 56:31Channing Crowder?

And staying quickly on the way out, everybody, I don't want to say chasing, because that's kind of like, it's kind of, you know, I don't know, pathetic or whatever, but like, as a corner, who is that guy that you look at, you know? Like, I looked at Junior Sayaw as a linebacker. I remember watching Junior, like, if I can do what Junior did, what, 12 Pro Bowls in a row, whatever? I was like, that's, that's the standard. Who's the standard at cornerback?

• 56:55Speaker 06

  Champ Bailey.

• 56:57Channing Crowder?

  Champ?

• 56:57Speaker 06

  Champ. That's, yeah, him.

• 57:02Channing Crowder?

  That's it? Deion? Prime?

• 57:04Speaker 06

  Champ.

• 57:06Channing Crowder?

  Champ was locked down.

• 57:07Speaker 06

  Champ.

• 57:07Ryan Clark?

Champ caught the ball, too. And y'all all wore those, that ugly number as well.

• 57:11Speaker 04

24, right? But 25 is that much uglier.

• 57:14Channing Crowder?

Man, it's the ugliest number in the world. 25 is the worst.

• 57:18Ryan Clark?

I think 26 might be the worst.

• 57:19Channing Crowder?

Sting, I was undrafted, Sting. You gotta, listen, you gotta get what they give you. You know what I mean?

• 57:25Ryan Clark?

He threw his jersey on the ground. There you go, I see. Okay, Sting, since we on the way out, and Channing been talking about your chain, oh.

• 57:34Channing Crowder?

  I'm jealous, I'm a little jealous.

• 57:35Ryan Clark?

According to the rookie contract rules, you're actually eligible for an extension.

• 57:42Ryan Clark?

Uh, there was an agent change. I know your agent very well. A lot of times, Sting, what happens is when your agent does a deal for a very good player in your, in your life, uh, uh, the best at the position as an All-Pro, the headline reads, "And new, highest paid, whatever the position is, such and such such signs a new deal." For you, you've put the groundwork in to have an opportunity to get there. How important is it for you to get a deal done and remain a Houston Texan?

• 58:18Speaker 06

Well, I mean, I want to stay in Houston for, I mean, the rest of my career, really. The deal, you know, the deal gonna happen when it happen. You know, we still gotta take care of business. I still gotta work out, still gotta be there, be around the team, because Nico, Nico Collins, when he was doing all that last year, every day I'm in there working out, I see him working out, so like, you know, that's the standard that we got over there with the Texans, so that's what I'm gonna try to keep on doing, so.

• 58:48Ryan Clark?

Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. Hey, look, hey, mm-hmm. I mean, I'm for real. What time is it?

• 58:53Speaker 06

  I'm for real.

• 58:57Ryan Clark?

But nah, man, I appreciate y'all, man. Y'all know, I love you both. So happy, so happy for you personally. I'm so happy for your family. Man, just continue to do what you do, man, and just remember, like, they put so much love into you, man, so much support. It is more than just you, I don't care about on the field, but walking around in life. Like, that name does mean a lot to a lot of people, man, and I'm really grateful for both of y'all. Appreciate y'all. Thank you, man. All love. Don't give me that old piece, man. Give me that old piece. Yeah, I'ma go to work. I'ma go to work, because Nico went to work. Nico went to work, so I gotta go to work.

• 59:34Channing Crowder?

I'm just, you know, I'm just working, just grinding, see what happens.

• 59:37Ryan Clark?

Brad, you made this happen, dude. Oh, I know, I'm sure.

• 59:39Channing Crowder?

  That's cool, man, that's right.

• 59:40Ryan Clark?

They gonna mess, man. They gonna mess. No, it's.

• 59:44Fred Taylor?

But, like, I have personal relationships from afar. Like, I root for CJ to have, we gonna get 300. You know what I'm saying? Have a great game, do your thing, get two picks. You got Trevor, your rookie year.

• 59:55Channing Crowder?

He do, but it's every year, every year.

• 59:57Fred Taylor?

  Which is crazy, but.

• 59:59Channing Crowder?

I covered it, I covered the damn Dolphins. Made our life miserable that week.

• 1:00:04Ryan Clark?

Man, this nigga just snatched the ball out his ass.

• 1:00:36Speaker 00
