The 2025 Alternative Oscars, a.k.a. the 5th Annual Big Picks!

Sean and Amanda return for their fifth annual Alternative Oscar awards (a.k.a. the Big Picks), in which they award alternative nominees and winners for the major Oscar categories, as well as some of our own homemade categories. The snubbed, the beloved, and more are all represented here (44:00)! Before handing out the awards, they react to the past week’s big news in the film world, including a fascinating Timothée Chalamet SAG speech, and the news that the Broccoli family has ceded creative control of the James Bond franchise to Amazon (1:00). Chronic migraine doesn't care about your to-do list. For people with chronic migraine, 15 or more headache days a month, each lasting four hours or more, Botox, Anabatilinum Toxin A, prevents headaches in adults with chronic migraine. It is not approved for those with 14 or fewer headache days a month. Botox prevents, on average, eight to nine headache days a month versus six to seven for placebo. Prescription Botox is injected by your doctor. Effects of Botox may spread hours to weeks after injection, causing serious symptoms. Alert your doctor right away, as difficulty swallowing, speaking, breathing, eye problems, or muscle weakness can be signs of a life-threatening condition. Patients with these conditions before injection are at highest risk. Side effects may include allergic reactions, neck and injection site pain, fatigue and headache. Allergic reactions can include rash, welts, asthma symptoms, and dizziness. Don't receive Botox if there's a skin infection. Tell your doctor your medical history, muscle or nerve

• 2:12Sean Fennessey?

  I'm Sean Fennessey.

• 2:13Amanda Dobbins?

  I'm Amanda Dobbins.

• 2:13Sean Fennessey?

And this is the big picture conversation show about the Oscars, the real Oscars. That's right. The alternative Oscars are back, Amanda. Before we dole out some awards, we do have some news to catch up on after wellness week and an announcement to make. It is Oscars week, of course. So we'll be having predictions on the show later this week. We'll be coming to listeners live as quickly as we can after the telecast on Sunday night.

• 2:37Amanda Dobbins?

We aren't going to be live afterwards, are we?

• 2:39Sean Fennessey?

We're not going to be live live, but I'll be alive with you recording.

• 2:43Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I wanted to clarify because...

• 2:45Sean Fennessey?

We will be live before the telecast. So YouTube, Sunday afternoon, 2:30 PM Pacific, 5:30 PM East Coast. I don't know what that is for Mountain and Central, and I apologize to those regions of the country.

• 3:02Amanda Dobbins?

  It's 4:30 and 3:30 because that's how it goes.

• 3:04Sean Fennessey?

  That's how it goes.

• 3:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Just count backwards.

• 3:06Sean Fennessey?

Uh, we're gonna, we're gonna hang out for an hour on video.

• 3:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 3:10Sean Fennessey?

We're gonna talk about what predictions we made earlier in the week that we feel bad about. We're gonna talk about the vibes.

• 3:16Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 3:17Sean Fennessey?

Over the weekend. We're gonna talk-

• 3:18Amanda Dobbins?

This is a great time to invite me to your party.

• 3:21Sean Fennessey?

  What do you mean?

• 3:23Amanda Dobbins?

I don't know, people listening who have parties on Friday and Saturday night, you know?

• 3:27Sean Fennessey?

Oh, I thought you meant the Oscar party. It's like, no, you're watching the Oscars with me. I am the party.

• 3:31Amanda Dobbins?

Or Sunday night after, I know, but like after we're done here.

• 3:34Sean Fennessey?

Oh, you want to go out afterwards?

• 3:36Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, listen, I, like, I'm available. I was just saying before we started recording, we need a party. So-

• 3:41Sean Fennessey?

You were saying we need a birthday party for me, though. That was what you were saying.

• 3:44Amanda Dobbins?

Not for me, not for you.

• 3:46Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, clearly, clearly.

• 3:48Amanda Dobbins?

  I missed, 40 didn't happen, 40 and a half didn't happen, so we gotta do 41.

• 3:51Sean Fennessey?

  40 and a half?

• 3:52Amanda Dobbins?

I was gonna have a 40 and a half birthday party because, uh, for my 40th birthday party, I was like eight months pregnant, um, and just not in a partying kind of mood.

• 4:01Sean Fennessey?

What happened there? How'd that turn out?

• 4:02Amanda Dobbins?

I don't know if you remember.

• 4:03Sean Fennessey?

  Did something happen?

• 4:04Amanda Dobbins?

  I was pregnant.

• 4:05Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 4:06Amanda Dobbins?

And then 40 and a half was like very close after the fires and it, it was just like not really a party atmosphere. So now we're rebranding for 41 and I'm just gonna have a blowout.

• 4:16Sean Fennessey?

So you want to be invited to parties on Friday and Saturday before the Academy Awards, which is a working weekend for both of us.

• 4:23Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I'm just saying then I could talk about them.

• 4:26Sean Fennessey?

Right, and tell people things that you would also tell them on this pod?

• 4:30Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I just, I'm saying that, that could do it live.

• 4:33Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 4:33Amanda Dobbins?

You know, the other thing is that-

• 4:34Sean Fennessey?

You don't like to go to parties. What are you talking about?

• 4:37Amanda Dobbins?

It is true that it's not as fun, like there are like work parties and then there are party parties, you know, and the work parties, you know, if you're not one of the famous people, which I'm not, and I'm comfortable with that.

• 4:48Sean Fennessey?

You want to be able to just do ketamine at a party. You don't want to be responsible.

• 4:52Amanda Dobbins?

I want to be able to like have a cocktail and then dance, you know?

• 4:56Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 4:56Amanda Dobbins?

But no one dances at the parties, at the work. Yeah.

• 5:00Sean Fennessey?

Oh, the work parties, no. Imagine if I just started cutting a rug just in front of Steven Spielberg. Excuse me, sir.

• 5:06Amanda Dobbins?

I know. Remember the night, like, it wasn't that long before the pandemic, but we didn't have kids.

• 5:13Sean Fennessey?

Those memories are gone. I'm sorry to tell you.

• 5:16Amanda Dobbins?

Do you remember this? We went out to dinner.

• 5:18Sean Fennessey?

Oh, Chris and I were just talking about this.

• 5:19Amanda Dobbins?

For Bebe's birthday. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then we all piled into your car, breaking all sorts of traffic and safety laws. And then you drove us to shortstop at some, for some reason, you drove us through Hollywood Bowl traffic. So you were like at your angriest and then all of us were crammed in the back of the car. And then we did shortstop and like, will we ever be young and have fun again?

• 5:40Sean Fennessey?

That was an incredibly fun night.

• 5:42Amanda Dobbins?

That was so fun. And so I'm just saying, I'm willing to reenact that on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday night when I'm not working.

• 5:49Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 5:49Amanda Dobbins?

The other thing here is I was thinking I would have like a cocktail during the live portion, but it is at 2:30 in the afternoon.

• 5:55Sean Fennessey?

Might be a better time to do it so then you can come down a little bit.

• 5:58Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, that's true. I'm probably not gonna have one after, but I don't know. Like, we're working, you know?

• 6:06Sean Fennessey?

  In a manner of speaking.

• 6:07Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 6:07Sean Fennessey?

  Can I tell you something?

• 6:08Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 6:10Sean Fennessey?

I really missed podcasting with you during Wellness Week. There were so many times when I thought it would be so fun to make a show with Amanda.

• 6:15Amanda Dobbins?

That's like, but that was nicer than your normal segues of teeing up the other things. You're a real pro.

• 6:20Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, thank you. We'll be live on YouTube on Sunday, but right now we need to talk about what happened last Sunday, which was of course the SAG Awards. There were a number of precursors that went down while we were gone.

• 6:31Amanda Dobbins?

  No, last Sunday was BAFTA.

• 6:34Sean Fennessey?

  Two Sundays ago was BAFTA.

• 6:36Amanda Dobbins?

  Two Sundays ago?

• 6:37Sean Fennessey?

Not yesterday, but the Sunday before that.

• 6:39Amanda Dobbins?

  Right. Okay, yes.

• 6:42Amanda Dobbins?

God, it's been a long week.

• 6:43Sean Fennessey?

  Reset.

• 6:44Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 6:44Sean Fennessey?

Do you want to talk about SAG or BAFTA first? I think SAG. SAG is fresh in everyone's mind. SAG was a fascinating telecast with crazy results, I thought. Not crazy, but highly unexpected.

• 6:54Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, it was a bunch of famous people in a room. And sometimes the sound worked and sometimes it didn't.

• 6:58Sean Fennessey?

It was. It was. This was a different sort of SAG in part because it was happening so late. So it won't have the same impact on the Oscar race that it usually does because all the award shows were impacted by the fires.

• 7:07Amanda Dobbins?

Yes. So in terms of influencing voting, it doesn't really mean anything. Someone DM'd us to be like, will Pope Francis's health affect Conclave? And the answer is no, because voting's closed. But that's also how I learned that Pope Francis was in ill health.

• 7:24Sean Fennessey?

That will come up again in this discussion.

• 7:25Amanda Dobbins?

Yes. So it doesn't influence the votes. But I do think you can kind of, it's reflective of where people are. You know, where the tea leaves are moving.

• 7:38Sean Fennessey?

Yes, there are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of members of SAG who are also Academy members. It's the largest voting block in the Academy. Oscar voting closed February 18th. So this was roughly five days later. Let's just go to the results because they're really interesting.

• 7:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 7:55Sean Fennessey?

Best Ensemble went to Conclave. This was the final award of the night. This is not the most predictive award historically. Only 15 of the last 30 Best Ensemble winners have gone on to win Best Picture. But you know, it's not nothing. In a year where things keep shifting and every time we decide, okay, it is an aura. No, just kidding. It's the brutalists. Actually, Amelia Perez? Look at all these nominations. Nope, actually it is an aura. Wait, is it now after a BAFTA win?

• 8:23Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 8:24Sean Fennessey?

For Best Film, Enbress Best British Film, and now a Best Ensemble win for Conclave? Is it Conclave? You don't have to say for sure, but how are you feeling?

• 8:34Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, it's interesting, right? I still don't think so.

• 8:37Sean Fennessey?

  I don't think so either.

• 8:38Amanda Dobbins?

Because the voting, the preferential ballot is slightly different. And so. In some ways, preferential ballot means that you get something more, you know, consensus-y. But in other ways, it means if there is a movie that is a favorite with a lot of people. And so I think Conclave is probably third or fourth on a lot of ballots. But I don't know if we're gonna get to the third or fourth ballot in this, in this season.

• 9:06Sean Fennessey?

It might require more game theory than ever.

• 9:09Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 9:09Sean Fennessey?

Because it feels as though there are four, maybe even five movies who everyone likes. And there's not this like.

• 9:20Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 9:21Sean Fennessey?

And because, so those, it's not just that the first and second place votes are really important, but the third and fourth place votes might, might be really important, too. And so I'm not sure what that means for Conclave. Obviously, a very fun movie, not a bad contender. In any normal year, this movie would be running in sixth or seventh place. It's fascinating that it has a real puncher's chance. You know, you've got Enora with PGA, WGA, and DGA precursors. And now you've got Conclave with BAFTA and SAG, which is nothing to turn your nose up at. So, I don't know. If, if, if we, if we were here on, less than a week from now, and we said the best picture winner is Conclave, you, you probably couldn't be stunned, right?

• 9:59Amanda Dobbins?

No, you wouldn't be stunned. I think you would be surprised. I do think that Conclave winning over a couple of these ensembles makes some other movies less likely. So the other nominees were Enora, A Complete Unknown, Emilia Perez, and Wicked. I think three to four weeks ago, I would have predicted Emilia Perez to win in this category.

• 10:22Sean Fennessey?

You think it would have if not for the Carlos Sofia-Gascón scandal?

• 10:25Amanda Dobbins?

I'm just, I think that it was very possible. And it has been, it was up until someone was literally erased from billboards, marketed as like this group of women and like transformational.

• 10:39Sean Fennessey?

  A true ensemble.

• 10:40Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 10:42Amanda Dobbins?

And you smartly predicted that like Wicked also maybe had a spot there.

• 10:47Sean Fennessey?

I thought it was gonna win tonight, or last night. I really, I thought it was gonna win.

• 10:50Amanda Dobbins?

And then there is also, A Complete Unknown had such strength really at these nominations. And is like a very actory type of movie as seen. You know, in another category that we will soon discuss.

• 11:03Sean Fennessey?

  We shall.

• 11:04Amanda Dobbins?

So, but I think the fact that Conclave triumphed over those movies makes me like a little less suspicious that we're gonna see a complete unknown or like a, really a clean unknown surprise.

• 11:17Sean Fennessey?

  Agree.

• 11:17Amanda Dobbins?

  I could be wrong.

• 11:19Sean Fennessey?

I think that's done, that surprise potential. The other thing to consider here is that it's clear that the SAG Awards were not very high on the brutalist.

• 11:27Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 11:28Sean Fennessey?

Guy Pearce was not nominated, Adrian Brody did not win, and the ensemble was not nominated. So if that's a movie that is still contending for Best Picture, we probably weren't gonna learn too much about it based on the results of this guild. So, you know, there was one great data point that came out of this that Scott Feinberg at the Hollywood Reporter pointed out, which I think is very interesting relative to Conclave's chances. He noted last night, almost every Best Picture Oscar surprise winner first won Best Ensemble SAG Award, including 1998's Shakespeare in Love, 2005's Crash, 2015's Spotlight, 2019's Parasite, and 2021's Coda. Now, these were all films that were really never the favorites and emerged late breaking in the season.

• 12:12Amanda Dobbins?

Right. However, voting was different in those years and seeing the cast on stage together, accepting the ensemble award could still affect Oscar voting.

• 12:26Sean Fennessey?

It's weird because it doesn't feel like Conclave is competing in too many other categories. You know, it's competing in adapted screenplay pretty hard. That's pretty much it. Also, obviously, Edward Berger was not nominated for director. That shows a kind of weakness in the race. Gotta say, before we get to the next important conversation, just enjoying this season. The fact that it keeps changing, the fact that it's not predictable. I love the movie Oppenheimer, but I got really bored covering the Oppenheimer race.

• 12:49Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, we were scraping the bottom of the barrel.

• 12:50Sean Fennessey?

  That was just dull.

• 12:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 12:51Sean Fennessey?

And even Everything Everywhere All at Once, that was a pretty dull year in terms of coverage. Like, this is cool. This is fun, that there's still three, four movies that could win, and I'm hoping for a surprise.

• 13:03Amanda Dobbins?

I am too. Well, no, I'm not. I would like to win.

• 13:06Sean Fennessey?

Because you think, you think, oh, you want to win the bet?

• 13:08Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I want to win the bet. I'd like to be right.

• 13:10Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 13:11Amanda Dobbins?

  And...

• 13:11Sean Fennessey?

I feel like I'm letting go of that one this year. I don't, I don't really care.

• 13:15Amanda Dobbins?

  I think...

• 13:15Sean Fennessey?

Because you can't be right this time. There's not...

• 13:17Amanda Dobbins?

  No, that's true.

• 13:18Sean Fennessey?

It's too much weirdness. There's too many movies that don't have a strong enough consensus.

• 13:22Amanda Dobbins?

That's true. I, I mean, the other thing is that I, I like Enora so much. It was my favorite movie of the year. So for it to win would be really fun.

• 13:29Sean Fennessey?

It would be a great and fascinating winner that I would love to talk about, and I'm obviously a big fan of that movie. I want to talk about it again with you in a little bit, but first let's talk about the other huge award result at SAG, which was that Timothee Chalamet finally put a number on the board.

• 13:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 13:44Sean Fennessey?

He had really not been winning any awards throughout the season despite running a very fun campaign that we've talked about over and over again, giving a great performance in A Complete Unknown is Bob Dylan. He won.

• 13:53Amanda Dobbins?

  He did.

• 13:54Sean Fennessey?

  Triumphed over Adrian Brody.

• 13:55Amanda Dobbins?

Club Chalamet would like me to point out that this is one of the few award ceremonies that he attended without Kylie Jenner.

• 14:02Sean Fennessey?

And what do you think that was about?

• 14:04Amanda Dobbins?

I, you know, maybe she was working. Maybe she was elsewhere. I'm not really sure. I don't, she, she is a billionaire on paper.

• 14:11Sean Fennessey?

It was a Sunday at 8:00 PM.

• 14:12Amanda Dobbins?

Listen, I don't know. Maybe she has a shoot somewhere else, you know, international. Well, because she makes those little lip kits, you know?

• 14:19Sean Fennessey?

You're going to feminist war for Kylie Jenner?

• 14:21Amanda Dobbins?

I'm not. I'm, I'm actually, you know, was like gently trying to locate the Kylie curse toward to Club Chalamet. Do you know about Club Chalamet?

• 14:29Sean Fennessey?

I do know about Club Chalamet, yes.

• 14:30Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. That's, I mean, that's just a fun internet thing.

• 14:32Sean Fennessey?

  A controversial figure.

• 14:33Amanda Dobbins?

Yes, exactly. And Club Chalamet has been notably anti-Kylie. Doesn't even print her name.

• 14:39Sean Fennessey?

  I see.

• 14:39Amanda Dobbins?

But, I mean, Kylie was at the BAFTAs, I think, and she was obviously at the Golden Globes for the second year running, so, you know.

• 14:45Sean Fennessey?

She did not join him. He went with his mom.

• 14:48Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 14:49Sean Fennessey?

And he went up and he gave a speech, and he gave a very direct speech. He talked about the fact that he put a lot of time and effort into his work starring as Bob Dylan, a man he called an American hero. And then he said, "I know this is not..."

• 15:07Sean Fennessey?

Common? I know you're not supposed to say this.

• 15:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 15:11Sean Fennessey?

And that we work in a subjective business. But I want to be one of the greats. He said, I am striving for greatness and that I'm not just inspired by the greats in this room or Daniel Day Lewis or Marlon Brando or Viola Davis. I am inspired by Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps. And that's what I want. And he said, this isn't, doesn't represent that, but it's more fuel as he picked up the award. More ammo to keep going. Now, I've seen a mixed reaction.

• 15:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 15:43Sean Fennessey?

To this speech. I will just say, I loved it.

• 15:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Awesome.

• 15:47Sean Fennessey?

I, I, this is the opposite of what we're meant to expect from actors and all performers who receive awards, which is you acknowledge your other, your fellow nominees. You stay humble. You talk about your gratitude. Maybe if you're a person of faith, you talk about God, you talk about your parents, you mention your team a number of times.

• 16:05Amanda Dobbins?

Kevin Keven was thanked too many times last night.

• 16:08Sean Fennessey?

Um, and all of that, we've heard that many times before. Timmy, Knicks fan for life, clearly a sports guy.

• 16:16Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 16:16Sean Fennessey?

Sees his work in a different vein. He is competitive. He is inspired by the, the, the feeling of achieving something that is achievable if you work hard enough and that you will be recognized in kind. I thought it, this is going to be maybe an annoying talking point, but I'm going to share it with you, even though we don't really know what we're talking about. I thought it was very Gen Z or, you know, young, young, young, young, young millennial.

• 16:43Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, I was gonna say Bobby's yelling at us.

• 16:46Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. Yeah. But it was, it was more the like, and I'm, I'm not trying to.

• 16:52Amanda Dobbins?

The, the screen was like, was on sleep and then just angry Bobby popped up. That was really good.

• 16:57Sean Fennessey?

I'm not trying to pick a fight with Gen Z or young millennials.

• 17:00Amanda Dobbins?

  No, it was very, very.

• 17:02Sean Fennessey?

Sometimes I'm going to say what I need to say and I'm not afraid if it ruffles feathers. There's like, there is a gener- I think elder millennials and Gen X are kind of like, eh, you know, I don't want to step on toes.

• 17:11Amanda Dobbins?

A sincerity even in the competitiveness of it, like this means something to me. I know you're not supposed to say it, but this is what I want. No, I agree with you. It's also just like. And I, and I, and this is crass, and I'm sorry, but like amazing content. Like sometimes you want, not sometimes, all of the time, you want people in these roles, especially the performers, to perform, you know? Like, this is one big show. Like, give me something to talk about. And it was fantastic. And he is really good at that. Like, he reads the moment, like, he, I mean, he's obviously a great actor and a great performer, but like, my guy is dialed in.

• 17:47Sean Fennessey?

But also, he didn't, he hasn't won any awards to this point, or not any televised awards. And he didn't have a piece of paper in his hand. He didn't have a phone in his hand.

• 17:55Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, that's right.

• 17:56Sean Fennessey?

And he went up there and he had a very coherent, clear through line that he wanted to speak to. Thanked his mom who worked for Actors Equity for 40 years. Great way to open a speech in front of SAG. And then he just went bang, bang, bang. I am, I want to be Tiger Woods. I want to be MJ. I want to be, I have an assassin's like commitment to being great at what I do. I would, again, personally, raise the specter of Wonka in the lineage of the work that he is doing relative to that comment? I have some questions about that. Aside from that, he's using his powers for good. This is the only person in Hollywood under 30 who moves the needle. It's awesome that he would choose to say this at this time in front of those people, even though I'm sure it made some people in the audience a little like, what's this guy's problem?

• 18:39Sean Fennessey?

Why is he being such a, you know, dead eyed, you know, maximist and gladiator warrior moment?

• 18:45Amanda Dobbins?

It wasn't dead eyed. Also, he was wearing leather and a bolo tie.

• 18:49Sean Fennessey?

A leather suit, a bolo tie, and a lime green button down.

• 18:52Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, incredible. Really, really special stuff. I'm a huge fan.

• 18:56Sean Fennessey?

Adrian Brody genuinely seemed surprised, confused, impressed, annoyed? All four?

• 19:03Amanda Dobbins?

Surprised, I think, and then really trying to like steer the car of reaction back on the road, you know? Uh, everyone else, like, because, because Timmy's reaction, um, and I hope he'll let me call him Timmy. Um, it's said with love. His reaction was so good and he was like, oh, wait, what?

• 19:24Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 19:24Amanda Dobbins?

That I have seen the replay of the five boxes a lot and everybody is kind of, you know, Daniel Craig is just.

• 19:31Sean Fennessey?

Thrilled to be there. He looked amazing.

• 19:33Amanda Dobbins?

  He looks amazing.

• 19:34Sean Fennessey?

His hair is long, got sunglasses on.

• 19:35Amanda Dobbins?

Is he thrilled to be there? I don't really know, but he's just kind of there. He had no expectations.

• 19:39Sean Fennessey?

We'll get to him and his legacy and we get to a couple of other news items.

• 19:42Amanda Dobbins?

Coleman Domingo is locked in, knows exactly what to be doing and.

• 19:47Sean Fennessey?

  He knows he's not waiting.

• 19:48Amanda Dobbins?

  And who was number five?

• 19:49Sean Fennessey?

Um, last night, number five, Coleman Domingo, Daniel Craig. Uh, I can't remember. I can't remember.

• 19:59Amanda Dobbins?

Refines, refines. Oh, refines. Refines, you know.

• 20:02Sean Fennessey?

  He's been there before.

• 20:03Amanda Dobbins?

Sure. And, um, so, but it was really Adrian Brody just being like, oh, and the camera's on me and I gotta, I gotta pull this together a little.

• 20:11Sean Fennessey?

Um, do you think this shifts the race?

• 20:15Amanda Dobbins?

I don't know. I honestly, I don't know. It, it's late enough. I think this is the kind of thing where if voting were still open, people would be like, oh, we're doing that now.

• 20:28Sean Fennessey?

  Mm hmm.

• 20:28Amanda Dobbins?

I do think it indicates that a lot of actors who are a very large voting block really like that performance. I do think that many people, myself included, also really love Adrian Brody. That is a more, I mean, in the way that that movie, despite being like a very American story about America, leaned so heavily on European cinema and I think speaks to international voters in a way that, you know, do, do other people, not Americans, care that much about like our, you know, our next great son, like doing Bob Dylan and going electric? Like, I don't know if they do. I do, my three-year-old son does, you know?

• 21:13Amanda Dobbins?

Like, we're here, they're talking about Bob Dylan. But, yes, they are, Knox. But I, it's really split. Like, I.

• 21:24Sean Fennessey?

It feels like it feels like a coin flip.

• 21:25Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, we are doing our predictions in a couple of days. I don't know what my answer is yet on this one.

• 21:30Sean Fennessey?

I don't either. I was, I was very happy to see that win, not just because I think he's very good in it. I think Bert Brody is also extraordinary in that movie. It's just, as you said, it was a moment. It was a very memorable moment. Chalamet is not some new kid on the block, though. This is his third individual SAG nomination. He's also been nominated, I think, twice for ensembles. Like, he's been to that show many times. It was a bit of a, you know, stake in the ground. SAG Best Actor, 18 of the last 20 have gone on to win the Oscar. The last one who did not was Anthony Hopkins in The Father, because Chadwick Boseman won at SAG. So it's not common to win SAG and then lose the Academy Award. So we'll just have to wait and see. Best Actress, Demi Moore won.

• 22:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 22:11Sean Fennessey?

Momentum was flowing in Mikey Madison's direction. She did win at BAFTA. You didn't think so?

• 22:15Amanda Dobbins?

  No, I didn't. I, I did not.

• 22:18Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 22:18Amanda Dobbins?

Again, this is a little bit of like, you know, Demi Moore is a uniquely American institution, starring in a, like a French, sort of international, I guess, movie. But like, that's our gal.

• 22:33Sean Fennessey?

So you're holding on to Demi, you think?

• 22:34Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, like a thousand percent.

• 22:36Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 22:37Amanda Dobbins?

I think it was Rebecca Ford from Vanity Fair noted that the entire room stood up for her. And, and that was not the case for any of the nominees.

• 22:46Sean Fennessey?

Good speech, not, not quite as strong as the Globe speech.

• 22:48Amanda Dobbins?

Um, it was, it was a good speech. And is this where I float my, like, the speechwriters are showing a little take for this Oscar season?

• 22:57Sean Fennessey?

  Sure, yeah.

• 22:58Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, she delivered it beautifully. And I don't think I mind a, like, I think it's good to be prepared, you know? And they are actors, and so you can learn your lines and, you know? But the spontaneity is not really being telegraphed in the same, in the same way that I thought the Golden Globe speech really did have, even if it was also prepared. So.

• 23:23Sean Fennessey?

You're saying shades of Brad Pitt circa 2019?

• 23:26Amanda Dobbins?

Yes, yeah, both for, um. Well, like, really, like, across the board, I thought Zoe Saldana did a great job. She won again in Supporting Actress, and I think that that is concluded. And I also really do understand why that individual would want to have nailed down what she wants to say in front of a microphone of people.

• 23:46Sean Fennessey?

Careful not to miss stuff right now.

• 23:47Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, and I think they're, like, they're well-written. Like, part of the reason I'm like, OK, I can see this speechwriting in effect is because they're tying together big themes and lots of people. And it's, I, it's hard to be that polished and on-message off the cuff.

• 24:03Sean Fennessey?

  Mm-hmm. Well, hers was-

• 24:04Amanda Dobbins?

There's nothing wrong, there's literally nothing wrong with it. I was just kind of like, oh, OK, like, everyone really is, everyone's, everyone's prepping.

• 24:11Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, hers was prepared, for sure, because there was a lot of notes about when I got my SAG card, and I didn't know what SAG was. And, you know, a lot of times, it's playing for the room that you're in.

• 24:19Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 24:19Sean Fennessey?

Or the television production that you're in.

• 24:22Amanda Dobbins?

Demi Moore also did that as well, of, like, getting my card and-

• 24:25Sean Fennessey?

And she got several looks on the pre, like, the, you know, interstitials about how she had started on soaps. I just listened to her on WTF recently, too. She talked a lot about her experience on soaps back then. So, you know, at this award show, it's a lot of people who are, like, in the business.

• 24:39Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 24:39Sean Fennessey?

You know, it's not a really, it doesn't favor ingenue as much.

• 24:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 24:43Sean Fennessey?

It's really more like, are you a working actor?

• 24:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 24:45Sean Fennessey?

So, anyway, Zoe won, Kieran Culkin won for Supporting Actor. That also feels done and dusted.

• 24:52Amanda Dobbins?

  That's completely done.

• 24:54Sean Fennessey?

I find that a little bit disappointing, not because I dislike Kieran Culkin, because I do not. And I also do not really agree with the take that he is just doing what he did in Succession. I feel that there is a significant difference in the performance. The one thing that I've been thinking about, and you know I love Guy Pearce in Brutalist, but set that aside for a minute. I rewatched Enora, and I think Yurba Boros has very good in Enora.

• 25:16Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 25:17Sean Fennessey?

I have nothing negative to say about him, and he becomes the emotional fulcrum of the movie near the end of the movie. But Karen Karagulian is like, is the movie to me. The whole second act of the movie doesn't work if he's not as funny and energetic. And he's like an absolute shot of, of, of adrenaline into the heart of the movie.

• 25:35Sean Fennessey?

And no, no recognition. Like, we all just kinda decided it was Yurba Borisov? Cause he's got this critical moment near the end of the movie.

• 25:41Amanda Dobbins?

Well, but it's like creeping in.

• 25:43Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 25:44Amanda Dobbins?

And I think it was Joanna who pointed out, like, there is, the, the movie is cut in a way that it is watching Yurba Borisov. Like, the movie leads you to, to pick him.

• 25:54Sean Fennessey?

  And he's very good.

• 25:54Amanda Dobbins?

  And he's wonderful.

• 25:55Sean Fennessey?

But it's a testimony to the way that the script is written and the way that the movie is made. Not to the performance as much where Carigillian is like, he has a huge burden in the movie that he has to carry. He is a true supporting performance. Anyway, just citing that, cause I.

• 26:09Amanda Dobbins?

I think all the performances in Anora are very good because it's a wonderful film.

• 26:13Sean Fennessey?

  Some, some, some love.

• 26:15Amanda Dobbins?

  One thing on Mikey.

• 26:16Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 26:16Amanda Dobbins?

She did get one of the coveted, I'm Mikey Madison and I'm an actor intros, which is, you know, my favorite part of every Star Wars.

• 26:23Sean Fennessey?

  She's here to stay.

• 26:24Amanda Dobbins?

The, the best one, though, was Jessica Williams with Harrison Ford, just.

• 26:29Sean Fennessey?

Are you jealous of that moment?

• 26:31Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, I was just completely charmed by all that. I was like, well, this is, this is why Harrison Ford is Harrison Ford.

• 26:36Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I particularly liked the, uh, Kristen Bell performing, do you wanna be an actor? Yeah, you wanna build a snowman from Frozen, but do you wanna be an actor? And showing the clips of the actors at very young ages.

• 26:49Amanda Dobbins?

And they had a lot of the actors.

• 26:51Sean Fennessey?

  In the room.

• 26:51Amanda Dobbins?

Like, in the, but like, the camera knew they were coming and found them and showed them reacting to, like, their weird things. Yeah, it was very charming. The hacks bit was funny.

• 27:01Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, it was like, weirdly forgetting Sarah Marshall, one of my favorite movies of the 21st century. I thought that bit was not very good with Jason Segel. Unfortunately, I'll call back to that.

• 27:09Amanda Dobbins?

I'm just skeptical of that movie, but I know it's very important to all the men.

• 27:13Sean Fennessey?

Uh, don't bring that gender essentialist bullshit into this room when we're talking about forgetting Sarah Marshall.

• 27:18Amanda Dobbins?

I love all of you, and it's nice that you found love.

• 27:21Sean Fennessey?

Okay. Um, aired on Netflix again. It was fine. They had ads. How'd you feel about the ads?

• 27:26Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, I left or fast forwarded through them.

• 27:28Sean Fennessey?

Okay. Um, the ASC Awards, which are not televised on Netflix or anywhere else, I think are notable because Ed Lackman won for Maria. He'd never won this award before. This is the cinematographer's group. Um, he'd been nominated five times. He is nominated at the Academy Awards. Many people have been citing Loll Crowley as the frontrunner from The Brutalist for this film. But Jaron Blashky also won the Critics' Choice, and then Jomo Frey won The Spirits on Fri- on Saturday. Jomo Frey not nominated at the Academy Awards, but still, this, this category is kind of all over the place with the precursors. We'll see what happens. Thought that was worth sharing.

• 28:02Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. It'll also come up again in our predictions.

• 28:05Sean Fennessey?

  It will.

• 28:05Amanda Dobbins?

Because we do use the guilds as a bellwether.

• 28:08Sean Fennessey?

A bellwether. That's right. A beacon, a guiding light. The Spirit Awards happened on Saturday, as we mentioned. On Saturday night, I think, at least among the Oscar punditry, everybody was like, this is locked and loaded. Enora is taking this baby home because Enora won Best Feature, Best Director, and Best Lead Performance, coming off of a weekend in which at the BAFTAs it won Best Actress.

• 28:33Sean Fennessey?

Sean Baker gave a great speech about the essential nature of independent film and it being a safe haven for artists who want to control their work and what they have to say and the challenging nature of it right now. This is something we've talked about on the show many times. It's been a really tough decade for indie film. Baker has stuck to the indie model, so he's the perfect person to be giving that speech. He's been giving a lot of good speeches lately.

• 28:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 28:55Sean Fennessey?

  I'm not sold.

• 28:56Amanda Dobbins?

He's gonna give another great one from outside your ADU while I rearrange it.

• 29:03Sean Fennessey?

You think so? You think director is locked in?

• 29:05Amanda Dobbins?

I am hoping so. Both because it's my favorite movie of the year and I just, I really, I have visions, you know? I have a vision. I've got, I've got plans. I'm ready to go.

• 29:16Sean Fennessey?

Cool. Who will give you the key to that room is the interesting question here.

• 29:21Amanda Dobbins?

  Her name is Alice.

• 29:23Sean Fennessey?

She will. She will betray me for you for sure. Jesse Eisenberg wins Best Screenplay at the Indie Spirits. Flo won International Feature.

• 29:34Sean Fennessey?

Flo, I'm Still Here International Feature, that could come in at the Oscars.

• 29:39Amanda Dobbins?

I know what I think, but we'll save it for Wednesday.

• 29:42Sean Fennessey?

We'll see. No Other Land wins Best Documentary. We'll see what that means. Two awards that they do give at the Spirits that we will also be giving here today on the show. Best First Feature went to Dee Dee, Sean Long. He also won Best First Screenplay. The spirits are fine. They're on YouTube, hosted by Aidy Bryant, who I love.

• 30:00Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 30:00Sean Fennessey?

She's great. Um, not much more else to say about it.

• 30:04Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 30:05Sean Fennessey?

  Any, any other thoughts?

• 30:06Amanda Dobbins?

  I didn't watch them.

• 30:07Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 30:07Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, live. I mean, I watched some clips, but.

• 30:10Sean Fennessey?

Quickly, the BAFTAs mentioned Best Film, Best British Film went to Conclave. Mentioned Mikey Madison. The three other predicted winners went in the acting categories last weekend. Freddie Corbeil won Best Director. So we got a real showdown there. I'd like, actually don't know what the odds are. I'd like to see that. Eisenberg also won Best Original Screenplay here.

• 30:28Amanda Dobbins?

Yes, I do. That one's notable.

• 30:31Sean Fennessey?

  What's going on there?

• 30:32Amanda Dobbins?

Something might be happening there. And that's also like a very classic. We like it, but not enough for Best Picture. So, but we like you. Let's throw you a bone.

• 30:43Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, but.

• 30:44Amanda Dobbins?

  In this category.

• 30:44Sean Fennessey?

It's weird because Kieran and screenplay would historically be what they call a very nice win package.

• 30:49Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 30:50Sean Fennessey?

For a movie like A Real Pain, but it's not nominated Best Picture. So how strong is it? Not really that strong. Superman, The Christopher Reeve Story won Best Documentary.

• 30:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 30:58Sean Fennessey?

Not nominated at the Academy Awards. This is the first time in 14 years that the BAFTA winner was not even nominated for Best Documentary at the Oscars. Best Documentary this year, not that great.

• 31:07Amanda Dobbins?

I used my wellness week to watch all of the nominated documentaries. We will have that discussion.

• 31:12Sean Fennessey?

Okay. Uh, news we missed, moving away from award season. There probably were some things this morning that we've missed, so I'm sorry if I'm not getting into those things. We've been recording all morning. Uh, Matt Damon will play Odysseus in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.

• 31:25Amanda Dobbins?

I'm actually getting this news now. What I did not miss was Googling the picture of Matt Damon's armor, which happened live on Jam Session last week.

• 31:34Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 31:35Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, just, um, so period piece is what I learned.

• 31:37Sean Fennessey?

I listened to last week's Jam Session. Was it near the end?

• 31:39Amanda Dobbins?

Well, that was probably because it was on 2X and you just, you, you missed it.

• 31:45Sean Fennessey?

  What are you talking about?

• 31:45Amanda Dobbins?

  It was quick.

• 31:46Sean Fennessey?

With this bear trap in my head?

• 31:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 31:47Sean Fennessey?

  You kidding me?

• 31:48Amanda Dobbins?

  No, I just Googled it.

• 31:48Sean Fennessey?

Nothing gets by me on Jam Session. Come on. There was some speculation. I think I might have speculated perhaps Tom Holland was playing Odysseus. Not the case.

• 31:56Amanda Dobbins?

  It's, it's Damon. Yeah.

• 31:58Sean Fennessey?

How old is Odysseus in the book?

• 32:01Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I mean, he's older. He has a.

• 32:04Sean Fennessey?

In that time, could she live to 70?

• 32:06Amanda Dobbins?

Well, like, what are we doing? You know, like, do you want to be biologically accurate?

• 32:10Sean Fennessey?

How old are Scylla and Charybdis?

• 32:14Amanda Dobbins?

That I don't know, because that could be-

• 32:16Sean Fennessey?

  They're ancient.

• 32:16Amanda Dobbins?

  Hundreds of-

• 32:17Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, it feels like they're ancient.

• 32:18Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. How old are humans again? I was thinking about this the other day.

• 32:21Sean Fennessey?

  How old are humans?

• 32:22Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 32:22Sean Fennessey?

The human race? Well, the Bible tells us.

• 32:26Amanda Dobbins?

I meant the real one, because we got this set of like dinosaur eggs that you put in water and then they like, quote unquote, hatch a tiny plastic dinosaur.

• 32:35Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 32:36Amanda Dobbins?

I've been going through that box, learning about all the different dinosaurs.

• 32:39Sean Fennessey?

What's the dinosaur of choice in the household?

• 32:40Amanda Dobbins?

  Um.

• 32:41Sean Fennessey?

  Triceratops. Stegosaurus?

• 32:44Amanda Dobbins?

He makes up his own names.

• 32:45Sean Fennessey?

  Allosaurus?

• 32:46Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, we have like a lot of Spinosaurus.

• 32:49Sean Fennessey?

  Spinosaurus.

• 32:50Amanda Dobbins?

Spinosaurus? Yeah, I think we got two of those in the set. But he's really, what he's really good at is-

• 32:55Sean Fennessey?

  Raptor?

• 32:55Amanda Dobbins?

We haven't gotten a raptor yet. Um, it's just kind of what's in front of him.

• 32:59Sean Fennessey?

Do you think I could host-

• 33:00Amanda Dobbins?

  And he likes matching it.

• 33:01Sean Fennessey?

A good pod that's just me saying dinosaur names? I would enjoy that.

• 33:04Amanda Dobbins?

You could say it to Knox and then he would say them back and that would be really funny.

• 33:08Sean Fennessey?

Well, that's just something we'll do together.

• 33:09Amanda Dobbins?

Who can pronounce them better, Knox or Chris Ryan, is definitely like a segment that we should do.

• 33:14Sean Fennessey?

Our announcing, pronouncing king. Um, I am excited about The Odyssey. I think we're developing CR's Odyssey report.

• 33:22Amanda Dobbins?

So someone pointed out that the name of it should be The Odyssey R, which is obviously perfect.

• 33:29Sean Fennessey?

It's horrendous for SEO, but all right, I'll keep that in mind. Uh, we got word that-

• 33:34Amanda Dobbins?

Can you just do like metadata or whatever?

• 33:36Sean Fennessey?

I don't know what that means.

• 33:37Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 33:38Sean Fennessey?

That's very severance, what you just said.

• 33:40Amanda Dobbins?

  I wouldn't know.

• 33:41Sean Fennessey?

Scorsese, as in Martin, DiCaprio is in Leonardo, Blunt is in Emily, and Rock is in The. We're reportedly coming together for a Hawaii set gangster movie. And there is ferocious bidding in Hollywood for this new film, which was described in the trades as Goodfellas meets The Departed? Which is just gobbledegook.

• 34:05Amanda Dobbins?

  But in Hawaii.

• 34:06Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. Um, but in Hawaii. Is this movie real?

• 34:12Amanda Dobbins?

I don't know, but I'm trying to figure out how I can get a job as Martin Scorsese's Hawaii assistant. You know, like.

• 34:17Sean Fennessey?

  That doesn't, that sounds hard.

• 34:19Amanda Dobbins?

  I don't know.

• 34:20Sean Fennessey?

You want to work that hard in Hawaii?

• 34:22Amanda Dobbins?

Well, you gotta figure, I, I hope that there are like breaks built in for rest and relaxation, given the, the age and stature of, of everyone involved.

• 34:31Sean Fennessey?

I gotta get back to Hawaii. I mean. We moved to LA and went to Hawaii three times in five years and I was like, I guess this is where I go on vacation every year and I haven't been in like nine years and I love it. That's one of the few things in life that they were like, this is the best place on earth. I went and it was.

• 34:45Amanda Dobbins?

Yes, yeah. No, it's amazing. I miss it too. I haven't been since.

• 34:49Sean Fennessey?

  As always, don't have children.

• 34:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, really don't.

• 34:54Sean Fennessey?

Uh, this movie seems not real to me. It seems like, if it's real, I'm very excited. A lot of people I really like, The Rock's obviously on his revenge tour.

• 35:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure, yeah.

• 35:03Sean Fennessey?

His Actually I'm Good tour, which I support generally. I've been wanting him to make good movies for a very long time. Martin Scorsese's been attached to like nine movies over the last three years. If any of them gets made, I'll be delighted and I'll look forward to them, but uh, this one seems strange. But in some of the reporting, we did learn that Damien Chazelle's Evel Knievel biopic.

• 35:25Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 35:25Sean Fennessey?

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio is supposed to begin filming this summer. What?

• 35:31Amanda Dobbins?

What, what happened to the prison movie?

• 35:33Sean Fennessey?

  I don't know.

• 35:33Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 35:34Sean Fennessey?

Leonardo DiCaprio is Evel Knievel in a Damien Chazelle movie? What's happening?

• 35:38Amanda Dobbins?

I was waiting for you to announce like your sabbatical to go once again.

• 35:42Sean Fennessey?

Is this a real thing that is gonna happen?

• 35:43Amanda Dobbins?

Be like the clapboard guy on this movie.

• 35:45Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, you're a, hi, my voice is getting.

• 35:47Amanda Dobbins?

  I know, I know.

• 35:48Sean Fennessey?

Um, I'm really excited about that. I hope that's really happening and not just bullshit.

• 35:52Amanda Dobbins?

I think, I think everything that you just said should be true and that we should go to Hawaii.

• 35:57Sean Fennessey?

  Leo is.

• 35:57Amanda Dobbins?

Set visit, I'm available. Usually I say no, I'm available for this one.

• 36:01Sean Fennessey?

All this shit is going on in the world and Leo is like, I'm on a mission.

• 36:04Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 36:05Sean Fennessey?

I make cool movies and that's the only thing I do.

• 36:07Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 36:07Sean Fennessey?

It's honestly fabulous. I, I have so much respect for him. Okay, this is probably the biggest news.

• 36:13Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 36:13Sean Fennessey?

This is, and this was one when it happened. I was like, why, why aren't me and Amanda not on a pod right now? Amazon announced last week that they have gained creative control.

• 36:24Sean Fennessey?

From Barbara Bro- Broccoli and the Eon Productions Company of James Bond.

• 36:29Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 36:30Sean Fennessey?

So, Amazon now, they had the right to distribute James Bond films when they acquired the MGM, MGM and the MGM library.

• 36:37Amanda Dobbins?

  Correct.

• 36:38Sean Fennessey?

And now, but Barbara Broccoli and, is it Michael Johnson? I can't recall her stepbrother's last name. Michael Wilson, excuse me.

• 36:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes, Wilson.

• 36:49Sean Fennessey?

They retained the creative control of the character. And so, there has been this long period now since No Time to Die. Nothing's in development. No actors have been cast as the next Bond. Nothing's happening. They refused to let Amazon develop any related properties to the, to the, to the character. And then, Amazon reportedly for a large sum of money, got the rights. You've always been a much bigger Bond fan than I have been over the years. What do you, what do you, what do you make of this news?

• 37:20Amanda Dobbins?

Inevitable, I guess. I, you know, there, every time that you have the conversation about who will be the new Bond? How will they start it again? There is also the question of like, should there be another one? Is it, is this character, is this way of making movies completely out of, like, out of date and context? And what does it mean anymore to make one of these movies? And to make it the way that they used to make them? So, I think Michael Wilson was retiring. So, it was going to be Barbara Broccoli going on her own and just kind of didn't have.

• 37:57Sean Fennessey?

He's in his eighties, I believe. She's in her seventies.

• 38:00Amanda Dobbins?

Didn't have the, the energy anymore. And none of the, the Broccoli children were ready to, to take it on, which that's obviously a succession spinoff that I'd like to watch.

• 38:12Sean Fennessey?

Very interesting, behind the scenes. Which Broccoli child is like, I don't think so. I don't really want to work on Bond.

• 38:17Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I wonder if that was the decision or whether.

• 38:19Sean Fennessey?

We don't trust these nepo kids?

• 38:20Amanda Dobbins?

Exactly. Like, you guys, because, I mean, historically, the, the Broccolis and Barbara in particular have been very, very protective. They make their movies the way they want to make them.

• 38:33Sean Fennessey?

But she inherited that from her father, Cubby Broccoli.

• 38:35Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 38:38Amanda Dobbins?

So I, you know, but the standards and, and inflexibility at times. So maybe she was not willing to be flexible enough to one of the next generation, you know?

• 38:53Sean Fennessey?

It's, the alternative is interesting by ceding control to one of the most powerful corporations in the known world. And I'll zag on this a little bit because obviously when the news came out, a lot of people like, oh my God, Amazon's gonna fuck this up. They're gonna make nine spinoff series. They're gonna ruin the brand, yada, yada, yada. Honestly, two out of every five Bond movies aren't any good. Like I, let's not pretend like this is 100 years of solitude or something, you know what I mean? It's like, it's Bond.

• 39:20Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 39:21Sean Fennessey?

At least a third of the movies don't work at all.

• 39:24Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, I agree with you. I think that the counter argument would be in the way that Star Wars fans have seen their, you know, once hallowed.

• 39:33Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 39:34Amanda Dobbins?

Three, six, nine, however, many movies turned into 45 television shows starring Jude Law that I've never seen. Uh, and that increasingly you haven't seen either.

• 39:45Sean Fennessey?

  True.

• 39:46Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, and that there is a feeling that it would like dilute the specialness of the experience. I hear that. I'm sure there will be like some weird, you know, money penny spinoff that will like, make me depressed on behalf of all women and art. On the other hand, like, sure, show me like a MI6 show, like, show me, like, I'd love to meet 005. Like, I don't really care anymore. Like the, you're right that they weren't hallowed enough. That I, I'm not interested like in other parts of the world. The main issue is just that, you know, they used to be events in the sense of like a lot of money was spent

• 40:29Amanda Dobbins?

and, and a lot of creative effort was put, even if it didn't always work out in terms of the execution. But. You know, and you think of the other Amazon blockbusters like that we have seen it like they are like uniquely bad.

• 40:48Sean Fennessey?

  Mm hmm.

• 40:48Amanda Dobbins?

And like look uniquely bad and.

• 40:51Sean Fennessey?

  You really just gotta hope.

• 40:52Amanda Dobbins?

  That's not exciting.

• 40:53Sean Fennessey?

You gotta hope that they find a steward.

• 40:56Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 40:57Sean Fennessey?

A filmmaking, like a production group or a director or someone who feels very passionately that Christopher Nolan conversation cropped up right away because he's always wanted to make one of these movies. I find it hard to believe that they would give him total creative control.

• 41:10Amanda Dobbins?

So I mean, that becomes the problem. Like, do they find a steward who is like even close to? And I mean, it's not like the, you know, the Broccolis are not Martin Scorsese or anything else, but what is that person going to be a steward of? Like, is it trying to make the best possible James Bond film or trying to make something like, you know, big and lavish and kind of silly and memorable? Or is it going to be maximizing X, Y, you know?

• 41:39Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 41:39Amanda Dobbins?

The franchise potential over time with the, you know, and then selling bow ties or whatever.

• 41:47Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I don't have as much of a problem with the kind of merchandising and expansion stuff because it's an inevitability, I think. I do think that one thing that Barbara Broccoli in particular brought was not just like a real tenacity and an unwillingness to bend other people's desires, but a particular kind of taste. It might not have always been my taste.

• 42:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 42:06Sean Fennessey?

But fighting for Daniel Craig, not keeping Pierce Brosnan when she could have, because I think the last movie that he made was really financially successful. Pursuing someone like Sam Mendes, not my favorite director, but is a real director.

• 42:18Amanda Dobbins?

  And Skyfall was dynamite.

• 42:20Sean Fennessey?

Excellent movie. And being willing to evolve the character, being willing to take the chances that they took on the final film. They did a good job, you know? I really don't like Spectre and I think Quantum of Solace is flawed, but those other three movies I think are darn good. And. You really gotta hope that somebody who's got that, I don't know, vision is the right word when you're a producer of IP, but it's something.

• 42:44Amanda Dobbins?

I like, I agree, but I just don't think a person with vision is gonna be Amazon's number one priority. When, or like, vision being the most important thing on the, like, on the list of demands. So, in that sense, it's a bummer. I mean, it's, it is a bummer when it's corporations instead of people in charge of things. Just broadly speaking in the swath of human history, but.

• 43:07Sean Fennessey?

This is, this is the last domino. This is the last one of these things. You know, and the Lord of the Rings and Marvel and all of these things that people obsessed over for years and years that maintained some level of independent ownership in terms of licensing. I guess you could make the case that Stephen King still kinda runs the show on his stuff, but it's not really the same because he's already been adapted so many times. So, we are just in the era of.

• 43:30Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 43:30Sean Fennessey?

Corporate parentage for all of your favorite characters. That's just what it's all about. Except for Mickey Mouse, who's now in the public domain.

• 43:37Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, congratulations.

• 43:38Sean Fennessey?

When will you make your Mickey Mouse movie?

• 43:40Amanda Dobbins?

Knox does like Mickey. He somehow knows about Mickey. I think.

• 43:43Sean Fennessey?

  What does Mickey do?

• 43:45Amanda Dobbins?

  No idea.

• 43:46Sean Fennessey?

  What's his deal?

• 43:47Amanda Dobbins?

I, I mean, you would know better.

• 43:50Sean Fennessey?

  I don't, I don't, I'm not sure I get it.

• 43:52Amanda Dobbins?

And what does Minnie do besides love Mickey?

• 43:54Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, that's it.

• 43:55Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, the ears are pretty good, you know, and they did merchandise that very early.

• 43:59Sean Fennessey?

  Brilliant.

• 43:59Amanda Dobbins?

  So, that, that was smart.

• 44:01Sean Fennessey?

  Walt, yea or nay?

• 44:03Amanda Dobbins?

  It's a nay.

• 44:03Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 44:04Amanda Dobbins?

Walt was on a list of potential names.

• 44:06Sean Fennessey?

  Walt?

• 44:07Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah. I mean, obviously.

• 44:09Sean Fennessey?

Would it be Walt Disney Baron?

• 44:11Amanda Dobbins?

No. I think it would have been Walter and then Walt Baron. Yeah. But obviously, we want another direction, but.

• 44:19Sean Fennessey?

  Walt?

• 44:20Amanda Dobbins?

  It's kinda cute, right?

• 44:23Sean Fennessey?

I'm trying to imagine that kid being called Walt.

• 44:25Amanda Dobbins?

Well, he's not a Walt. He's a Cy. Yeah, it like, it all worked out, but.

• 44:29Sean Fennessey?

  Walt?

• 44:30Amanda Dobbins?

Walt, but it was, there was a discussion.

• 44:32Sean Fennessey?

I love Cy. I'm very pro Cy.

• 44:33Amanda Dobbins?

Thank you so much. We like it too. As soon as like, we spent a long time trying to be like, Walt, like, what'd we do? Cyrus and Cy.

• 44:38Sean Fennessey?

I meant the child, not the name. The name is great too, but I was referring to how much I love your child. Yeah, he's great.

• 44:43Amanda Dobbins?

  He's great.

• 44:43Sean Fennessey?

  He's great. I'm very pro.

• 44:44Amanda Dobbins?

He is just really, he's got a real temper though. That's a really interesting.

• 44:48Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I think I'm drawn to that.

• 44:49Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, he's so, so smiley and happy until you like, you've aired in some way and then he lets you know.

• 44:57Sean Fennessey?

  People I know, yeah.

• 44:58Amanda Dobbins?

  It's really, it's, it's powerful. Yeah, he's great. I'm, I'm, I'm happy about him.

Chronic migraine doesn't care about your to do list. For people with chronic migraine, 15 or more headache days a month, each lasting four hours or more, Botox, onabatilinumtoxin A, prevents headaches in adults with chronic migraine. It is not approved for those with 14 or fewer headache days a month. Botox prevents, on average, eight to nine headache days a month versus six to seven for placebo. Prescription Botox is injected by your doctor. Effects of Botox may spread hours to weeks after injection, causing serious symptoms. Alert your doctor right away as difficulty swallowing, speaking, breathing, eye problems or muscle weakness can be signs of a life threatening condition. Patients with these conditions before injection are at highest risk. Side effects may include allergic reactions, neck and injection site pain, fatigue and headache. Allergic reactions can include rash, welts, asthma symptoms and dizziness. Don't receive Botox if there's a skin infection. Shall we do the alternative Oscars? Yes. We have not changed the name. There will be no waltzing of the alternative Oscars. We're still calling it that. It's also called the big picks. It's the fifth time we've done it. You know, we were supposed to do it with Wesley Morris. We had a scheduling snafu.

• 47:01Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, we messed up.

• 47:02Sean Fennessey?

So Wesley is not with us today?

• 47:03Amanda Dobbins?

I'm sad because it's like, I see Wesley like twice a year, basically at this point, and once when he's in LA and once doing this episode.

• 47:10Sean Fennessey?

  Well, I kind of like-

• 47:10Amanda Dobbins?

  I miss him, yeah.

• 47:11Sean Fennessey?

Created this to get to spend two hours with him, especially during COVID. That was nice. Um.

• 47:17Amanda Dobbins?

It's okay. It'll be Tennessee season again soon and I can text him a lot.

• 47:20Sean Fennessey?

Yes. Um, I've at least been in good touch with him, but he's not joining us today. Alternative Oscars, if you've never heard it before, it is what it says on the label. These are film performances, stuff related to movies from the year 2024 that were not recognized at the Academy Awards. Can someone from a film that is nominated in another category be recognized? Yes, but there will be no repeats of any performances or of any movies in those respective categories. We've also added, I believe, nine categories. We've been sticking with these nine categories through the years, plus the seven big ones from the telecast. We also merged original screenplay and adapted screenplay into a single category, which I think maybe should be considered. Just putting that out there. Something I've been thinking.

• 48:00Amanda Dobbins?

We, we can't get rid of the actual, like, good awards, you know? And they're all good, except for, with respect, short films, which I still have to watch.

• 48:10Sean Fennessey?

Okay. I watched them all overwhelmed this week.

• 48:12Amanda Dobbins?

I was, I'm, oh, listen, I started at a deficit because of, you know, uh, people not named Walt, and I am gonna catch up.

• 48:24Sean Fennessey?

Can I, can you guess how many of the short films I liked? I would say I liked?

• 48:27Amanda Dobbins?

  Two?

• 48:28Sean Fennessey?

  One.

• 48:29Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, God. I mean, this is always the thing. Just, listen, I, it's important to learn about stuff by making a short film, and it's important to learn about new directors, but we have a better category for that. We gotta move them. Different, different awards show, different awards show. I'm sorry.

• 48:46Sean Fennessey?

Okay. Uh, let's do our award show.

• 48:48Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 48:49Sean Fennessey?

Who's the host of our award show?

• 48:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Hmm. John Mulaney.

• 48:53Sean Fennessey?

  Okay, I would love that.

• 48:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 48:54Sean Fennessey?

Who's producing our award show? Nick Kroll.

• 48:58Amanda Dobbins?

Perfect. Great. Okay, there we go. Yeah. Now we can't afford, uh, any award or anything else.

• 49:03Sean Fennessey?

But then now it's just me talking for 90 minutes. No one is in attendance.

• 49:09Sean Fennessey?

Just Jack Sanders and Bobby on a black screen.

• 49:11Amanda Dobbins?

  Absolutely nothing, yeah.

• 49:12Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. We are catered by whatever's in the fridge here at Spotify.

• 49:16Amanda Dobbins?

Right. Also, our children don't get to go to school-

• 49:18Sean Fennessey?

  That's right.

• 49:19Amanda Dobbins?

For the next 25 years. But Mulaney and Kroll got their feast, so.

• 49:25Sean Fennessey?

Congratulations to them. The first category is best first feature. Now, we tend to, we do this collaboratively, collectively.

• 49:32Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 49:32Sean Fennessey?

I throw a bunch of names in, you throw a bunch of names in.

• 49:35Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 49:35Sean Fennessey?

We take some stuff out, we don't take some stuff out. I try to keep the categories with a couple of exceptions to five people.

• 49:40Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 49:41Sean Fennessey?

Which is, I think, the right number of people. This critics' choice situation where you get like seven or eight nominees. I don't really believe in that.

• 49:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 49:47Sean Fennessey?

But honestly, I don't have self-control and sometimes I add a bunch of people to certain categories. What do you think about the number of people?

• 49:52Amanda Dobbins?

  We've been mostly consistent.

• 49:54Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 49:54Amanda Dobbins?

Which I, as a fan of order and we need to know what the rules are. I like that, you know, when it's like, the thing that drives me insane is when it's like, sometimes it's seven, sometimes it's six, sometimes it's eight.

• 50:07Sean Fennessey?

  Agreed. I don't like that.

• 50:07Amanda Dobbins?

That's not okay. I think that we, we have one category where things went, or two categories where things went a little crazy. But that's also sort of the-

• 50:16Sean Fennessey?

  I think they're justifiable.

• 50:17Amanda Dobbins?

I do. That's the point of both categories.

• 50:19Sean Fennessey?

Yes. Good. I'm glad we're on the same page about that. Okay, first category, best first feature.

• 50:23Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 50:23Sean Fennessey?

These are the first feature film directing jobs. The nominees are, Deedee, directed by Sean Wong. The First Omen, directed by Arkasha Stevenson. Good One, directed by India Donaldson. How to Have Sex, directed by Molly Manning-Walker, not C.R. The Piano Lesson, directed by Malcolm Washington.

• 50:43Amanda Dobbins?

So, a point of clarification. So, the person in The First Omen is not actually named Damian Owen.

• 50:51Sean Fennessey?

  Damian Omen, no.

• 50:52Amanda Dobbins?

  Damian Omen, that's right, yeah.

• 50:53Sean Fennessey?

Damian Omen only makes a late-breaking appearance at the end of The First Omen.

• 50:57Amanda Dobbins?

But Damian Omen is a real person. A real character.

• 51:00Sean Fennessey?

  His name is Damian.

• 51:01Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. So, this is, this is, because you and Chris were like making a lot of jokes and you told me I should see this movie even though it's terrifying and has something to do with childbirth in a way that was like not gonna really be in my option set.

• 51:13Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 51:14Amanda Dobbins?

  And-

• 51:14Sean Fennessey?

  His name is Damian Thorne.

• 51:15Amanda Dobbins?

I know, but you just kept calling him Damian Omen and I thought that was his real name.

• 51:19Sean Fennessey?

We do that because that's what Bill Simmons calls him.

• 51:21Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 51:21Sean Fennessey?

And we don't know why he calls him that. No one else calls him that, but when he says it, he says it so authoritatively that it makes it seem as though that is his name.

• 51:29Amanda Dobbins?

I love Bill so much, yeah.

• 51:30Sean Fennessey?

It's a great bit. He's got a lot of great bits like that.

• 51:33Amanda Dobbins?

  All right.

• 51:35Sean Fennessey?

I don't know if you feel strongly about any of these.

• 51:37Amanda Dobbins?

I, so I have not seen The First Omen because of the childbirth stuff?

• 51:42Sean Fennessey?

I'd like for you to watch it at some point because it, it is, it is pretty scary and intense, but- It's one of the, it's honest, it's just straight up one of the only horror movies made by a woman where you feel it, but it's not annoying about it.

• 51:58Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 51:58Sean Fennessey?

  You know what I mean?

• 51:58Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes, yeah, yeah.

• 51:59Sean Fennessey?

  It's not like girl power.

• 52:00Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 52:00Sean Fennessey?

It's like what happens to women's bodies is fucking insane.

• 52:04Amanda Dobbins?

  It is, yeah.

• 52:05Sean Fennessey?

And it manifests that in a very creative and intense and gripping way.

• 52:10Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, I, you know, not to steal from the indie spirits, but I also really liked DeeDee.

• 52:16Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I think it's, I think it's my winner too.

• 52:18Amanda Dobbins?

And it, it also like did become, you know, a sensation. I don't know how widely it was seen, but I, everyone I know who saw it, a lot of people sawed it out and everyone loved it.

• 52:29Sean Fennessey?

It feels so, this might be, this might've been like jerry-rigged by Sean because he, you know, had a little bit of, he's been making movies since he was a kid and he's had a little bit of a life before he made this movie, but it just feels like the first movie of a person's career where you're like, they're gonna go on to make really great movies. Like when you see like Duel or Sugarland Express with Spielberg and you're like, oh, they, they get it. They have like a really strong point of view, know how to tell a story, know how to get you invested in characters. I really like him. He's really impressive and also like 27 or something, it's fucked up.

• 52:58Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 52:59Sean Fennessey?

That's, that's good. We're on the same page with DeeDee. Breakthrough performance. Now, this is one of the two categories where we're a little crazy.

• 53:08Amanda Dobbins?

Right. But, but the point of this is just to talk about as many fun performances.

• 53:13Sean Fennessey?

  I'm with you.

• 53:14Amanda Dobbins?

Which is like something that the Oscars could really get on board with.

• 53:18Sean Fennessey?

A few of these are very obvious if you've been listening to the show over the last year. Some of them I think are cool, creative choices.

• 53:24Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 53:25Sean Fennessey?

The nominee, you wanna read the nominees?

• 53:27Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 53:29Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I don't, you'll have to help me with some pronunciations.

• 53:31Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 53:32Amanda Dobbins?

Ryan Destiny, The Fire Inside, Willa Fitzgerald, Strange Darling, Juliette.

• 53:38Sean Fennessey?

  Garippe?

• 53:38Amanda Dobbins?

Garippe, Red Rooms, Fred Heckinger, Gladiator 2, Thelma, Nickel Boys and Craven the Hunter. Did not know he was in Craven the Hunter.

• 53:46Sean Fennessey?

  He is.

• 53:47Amanda Dobbins?

John Earl Jelks, Exhibiting Forgiveness, David Johnson, Alien Romulus.

• 53:53Amanda Dobbins?

Bridget Lundey Payne, I Saw the TV Glow. Clarence Macklin, Sing Sing. Aaron Pierre, Rubble Ridge. Maisy Stella, My Old Ass.

• 54:01Sean Fennessey?

Now, I think Maisy Stella won this award at The Spirits.

• 54:04Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 54:05Sean Fennessey?

For her performance in My Old Ass.

• 54:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 54:07Sean Fennessey?

Some really good ones here. I just wanted to put a circle around John Earl Jelks from Exhibiting Forgiveness, which a lot of people haven't seen and we didn't talk about on the show at all. It's a movie starring Andre Holland. There was at Sundance in 2024. That is a solid drama about an artist. It has a lot of tropeysundancing aspects of it, but John Earl Jelks plays his father in the movie, and he's terrific. And I couldn't remember him from anything and wanted people to check the movie out for his work. Heckinger, you know, he cooked. Very funny Gladiator 2.

• 54:35Amanda Dobbins?

Just like a, we love when people just pop up in like 45 different movies.

• 54:39Sean Fennessey?

  It's great.

• 54:40Amanda Dobbins?

And it's like, oh, it's happening.

• 54:41Sean Fennessey?

And he's completely different in all four. In Thelma, he's just like so sweet.

• 54:46Amanda Dobbins?

When I realized halfway through Gladiator 2 that he was the kid from Thelma, I was like, holy cow.

• 54:52Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, we didn't give Thelma enough love on the show last year. That's a really nice movie. Craven the Hunter, he's not particularly great in, but his, his character is very amusing. And the way that that story is told is batshit.

• 55:04Amanda Dobbins?

  He's not great or the?

• 55:05Sean Fennessey?

  He's fine.

• 55:06Amanda Dobbins?

  It's just not.

• 55:07Sean Fennessey?

He's fine. He and Aaron Taylor Johnson are meant to be brothers and then they become rivals. It's very silly. Nickel Boys, he's very good in as well.

• 55:13Amanda Dobbins?

  That's concerning for me, but.

• 55:15Sean Fennessey?

  Craven.

• 55:16Amanda Dobbins?

Brothers that become rivals, you know? We need to not go that way.

• 55:19Sean Fennessey?

You know, I never had that.

• 55:20Amanda Dobbins?

  That's true.

• 55:21Sean Fennessey?

  I know.

• 55:22Amanda Dobbins?

That's true. That's beautiful. But, but you had, you had multiple siblings, so.

• 55:27Sean Fennessey?

I did. My sister and I could be rivalrous.

• 55:29Amanda Dobbins?

Well, but it's also, it kind of like lessens the, it kind of spreads out the pressures and the strife. You know, it doesn't all have to be concentrated in one, like deeply complicated relationship.

• 55:40Sean Fennessey?

Your wives are close in age, so they might be competitive with each other. You never know.

• 55:44Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 55:44Sean Fennessey?

Depends on the vibe. I, I think to me it's between. I'll tell you what, I don't think, you didn't see Strange Darling, right?

• 55:52Amanda Dobbins?

  I did see Strange Darling.

• 55:53Sean Fennessey?

  You did see it?

• 55:53Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 55:54Sean Fennessey?

We didn't talk about it on the show.

• 55:55Amanda Dobbins?

  We did talk about it.

• 55:56Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, we did? That's right.

• 55:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 55:58Sean Fennessey?

When we came back from the break in August.

• 56:00Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, I saw it. I liked it.

• 56:01Sean Fennessey?

Do you think Willa Fitzgerald was really good?

• 56:03Amanda Dobbins?

  I did.

• 56:04Sean Fennessey?

Do you think she's competing with Aaron Pierre in Rebel Ridge?

• 56:07Amanda Dobbins?

I was gonna say it's between Clarence Macklin and Aaron Pierre, so I think it's probably Aaron Pierre.

• 56:12Sean Fennessey?

  Clarence Macklin's great, too.

• 56:14Amanda Dobbins?

He's so good and should be nominated at the Oscars and isn't, which is just really dumb, in my opinion.

• 56:19Sean Fennessey?

It is really annoying. I think, I mean, I think Giulia Corripi in Red Veins is also remarkable. Willa Fitzgerald, even if you didn't like Strange Darling, or felt like the premise was contrived or whatever, or you got the twist and didn't enjoy it because you got the twist, I still think she's great.

• 56:35Amanda Dobbins?

  She's so good in it.

• 56:37Sean Fennessey?

Tough one. I would say Aaron Pierre, because I feel like Aaron Pierre now, that's a rare case where that movie, a lot of people saw that movie.

• 56:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 56:46Sean Fennessey?

And so now I think he has a chance to become like a fixture of American movies. He also was the voice of Simba, no, Mufasa in Mufasa, the Lion King.

• 56:54Amanda Dobbins?

I have one other option for you.

• 56:57Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 56:57Amanda Dobbins?

If you want, which is, no, no, I actually do think Aaron Pierre should probably be in Best Actor.

• 57:04Sean Fennessey?

So who would you take out of there, though?

• 57:06Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I don't want to spoil it, so I'm just, can you?

• 57:10Sean Fennessey?

Okay, yeah, yeah, we'll hold that.

• 57:11Amanda Dobbins?

  In terms of-

• 57:12Sean Fennessey?

So you want to give it to Clarence Macklin, or Willa Fitzgerald?

• 57:14Amanda Dobbins?

I would give it to Willa Fitzgerald if you want to, and then we'll put Aaron Pierre right here.

• 57:21Amanda Dobbins?

Which you can see in the document.

• 57:22Sean Fennessey?

I'm not even gonna look. I don't want it spoiled.

• 57:24Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, okay.

• 57:24Sean Fennessey?

I don't want it spoiled for me. I want to see what you're thinking. I like Willa Fitzgerald. I think it's a good pick. I think it's a good way to recognize a movie that we're not gonna, so we won't be repeating ourselves. The next category is a good one.

• 57:34Amanda Dobbins?

  Incredible.

• 57:35Sean Fennessey?

  Best Cameo.

• 57:36Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, so spoilers for the cinema of 2024.

• 57:41Sean Fennessey?

  Good point.

• 57:42Amanda Dobbins?

I, you know, and I don't want to hear it, you know, if you don't want someone show, well, there's one in particular where I'm like, oh, people will be mad, but I don't know how many people are gonna see Drive Away Dolls. If you don't want Drive Away Dolls, spoiled for you.

• 57:56Sean Fennessey?

  It's over a year old.

• 57:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Well, listen.

• 57:58Sean Fennessey?

That was a Valentine's Day movie last February.

• 58:00Amanda Dobbins?

  You-

• 58:01Sean Fennessey?

And you spent Valentine's Day with me and my wife watching that movie.

• 58:03Amanda Dobbins?

I don't think that was actually Valentine's Day.

• 58:05Sean Fennessey?

It was Valentine's Day, you were in our house alone, since I recall. It was.

• 58:09Amanda Dobbins?

I did an offer to come babysit for you guys sometime. Like, once the kids are fed.

• 58:13Sean Fennessey?

  Fucked up this weekend.

• 58:13Amanda Dobbins?

I can sit in your house instead of my own. And I couldn't do it, but listen, I'm available. Um, I, I, you, you know how people are. I just, I don't want to be responsible for your funds. Spoilers, I just.

• 58:25Sean Fennessey?

I'm getting, we're done with that. More episodes this year that are long conversations about the movie.

• 58:30Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 58:31Sean Fennessey?

Part of it is my fault because I see movies too early. And then we sit down to have a conversation about them. And I'm like, I didn't take notes. I saw this movie three months ago. So I am, I am making a bid.

• 58:40Amanda Dobbins?

  We're gonna see movies.

• 58:41Sean Fennessey?

Starting with Mickey 17, I'm gonna see it a second time the day before we record.

• 58:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 58:46Sean Fennessey?

  And.

• 58:47Amanda Dobbins?

  I guess I will too.

• 58:47Sean Fennessey?

Long conversation about Mickey 17 on the pod.

• 58:49Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. I mean, I am looking forward to that. Will you forward me the screening info?

• 58:54Sean Fennessey?

Uh, I'll be buying a ticket.

• 58:55Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, okay.

• 58:56Sean Fennessey?

Civilian, because it opens on the 7th and then we'll do it on the 10th.

• 58:59Amanda Dobbins?

On the Wednesday and then we'll do it on the, oh, we'll do it on the Monday?

• 59:01Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 59:02Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, great. Wow. How luxurious. Yeah.

• 59:05Sean Fennessey?

Maybe we should be doing that more often. It's hard with big event movies.

• 59:07Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, but as you know, I like doing that.

• 59:09Sean Fennessey?

  Uh, okay.

• 59:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay. Spoilers.

• 59:11Sean Fennessey?

  Best cameo.

• 59:12Amanda Dobbins?

Keep it to yourself and be a grown up.

• 59:13Sean Fennessey?

You want me to read these?

• 59:14Amanda Dobbins?

If you're, if you get spoiled, uh, sure, yeah.

• 59:16Sean Fennessey?

Okay. Kid Cudi, Trap. It's a great addition by you.

• 59:19Amanda Dobbins?

  Thank you.

• 59:20Sean Fennessey?

Matt Damon, Drive Away Dolls. Fred Durst in sort of an extended cameo that becomes a real part in Y2K. Kristin Chenoweth and Idina, Idina Menzel in Wicked. Jane Fonda in The Greatest Love Story Never Told. Lindsay Lohan in Mean Girls, the musical version. Jason Momoa in The Fall Guy and Wesley Snipes in Deadpool and Wolverine. There are obviously a number of contenders for Deadpool Wolverine. I, Wesley was my favorite.

• 59:44Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 59:45Sean Fennessey?

  Could have been Channing Tatum.

• 59:46Amanda Dobbins?

Jennifer Garner just absolutely being ignored.

• 59:49Sean Fennessey?

She's got that, uh, what's it called? Farmer's insurance money, Capital One money.

• 59:54Amanda Dobbins?

Do you guys do the, uh, the pouches? The.

• 59:56Sean Fennessey?

  What are the pouches?

• 59:57Amanda Dobbins?

Cause she has like a kids, like kids food company. She makes like a lot of pouches.

• 1:00:01Sean Fennessey?

Oh, is that her company? What, what's, what's like the, the standard?

• 1:00:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Farm, Once Upon a Farm?

• 1:00:04Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, Once Upon a Farm. Yeah.

• 1:00:05Amanda Dobbins?

  You guys do those?

• 1:00:06Sean Fennessey?

  We do those, yeah.

• 1:00:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, that's Jennifer Garner.

• 1:00:07Sean Fennessey?

Pretty good. Can't say I tasted them.

• 1:00:09Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:00:09Sean Fennessey?

They are inhaled by my child.

• 1:00:12Amanda Dobbins?

Keep them refrigerated, which is, that's not where we are in our lives right now.

• 1:00:17Sean Fennessey?

You want to be, have preservatives in all your food that you give to your children.

• 1:00:19Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, it's, we're just doing, yeah, the regular, the applesauce. Yeah.

• 1:00:23Sean Fennessey?

Um, Bobby points out that Fred Durst was also in I Saw the TV Glow. He was two for two on A24 projects this year.

• 1:00:33Sean Fennessey?

This is a tough one. Now, which one of these made you laugh the most? Cause that's a big, big part of the cameo part, right?

• 1:00:39Amanda Dobbins?

  Uh, definitely Kid Cudi.

• 1:00:41Sean Fennessey?

  Kid Cudi was hilarious.

• 1:00:42Amanda Dobbins?

  It just steals the-

• 1:00:44Sean Fennessey?

The openly flirting with Josh Hartnett.

• 1:00:46Amanda Dobbins?

Really, really funny. Um, Matt Damon kinda makes the movie in Drive Away Dolls, but he also wins best cameo every year.

• 1:00:54Sean Fennessey?

That's true. One of his favorite things to do.

• 1:00:56Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. It can't be Lindsay Lohan, cause it was sort of at her expense and that makes me sad, even though she's doing fine now.

• 1:01:03Sean Fennessey?

  She's doing very well.

• 1:01:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:03Sean Fennessey?

She's making, uh, very popular Netflix original movies I'll never watch.

• 1:01:08Amanda Dobbins?

  Um-

• 1:01:08Sean Fennessey?

  Did you watch Irish Wish?

• 1:01:10Amanda Dobbins?

  I didn't.

• 1:01:10Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:01:11Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:12Sean Fennessey?

What do you think happened in that movie?

• 1:01:14Amanda Dobbins?

Did she find love in Ireland?

• 1:01:16Sean Fennessey?

  Can't say.

• 1:01:16Amanda Dobbins?

  I hope so.

• 1:01:17Sean Fennessey?

Amy Adams did that once. What was that movie? Leap Year?

• 1:01:20Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, with Matthew Good. Yeah, trust me. I've seen all the Matthew Good movies.

• 1:01:23Sean Fennessey?

Sure you have. And your layer-

• 1:01:24Amanda Dobbins?

Mamma also really made me laugh.

• 1:01:26Sean Fennessey?

I liked this one a lot.

• 1:01:27Amanda Dobbins?

  This was, was very good.

• 1:01:28Sean Fennessey?

  Very funny.

• 1:01:29Amanda Dobbins?

I just wanna say that Jane Fonda gives Jennifer Lopez some very prescient, um, and useful life advice in The Greatest Love Story Never Told.

• 1:01:37Sean Fennessey?

  Like, Rosilla?

• 1:01:39Amanda Dobbins?

It's, she's literally just like, so Jane Fonda is there, cause she's one of the Zodiac Council in the musical, um, the, I don't remember what the musical, this is the documentary.

• 1:01:52Sean Fennessey?

  This is me now, then-

• 1:01:53Amanda Dobbins?

  This is me now.

• 1:01:54Sean Fennessey?

  The movie.

• 1:01:55Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:01:56Sean Fennessey?

This is me now, then, the streaming movie on-

• 1:01:58Amanda Dobbins?

No, no, this is me, this is me now.

• 1:02:01Sean Fennessey?

This is me now, colon, this is Amazon where you buy shit.

• 1:02:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Exactly.

• 1:02:06Sean Fennessey?

  Jennifer Lopez edition.

• 1:02:07Amanda Dobbins?

And also watch James Bond movies.

• 1:02:09Sean Fennessey?

This is me now, then, but now-

• 1:02:12Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 1:02:13Sean Fennessey?

In the future tense of today.

• 1:02:16Amanda Dobbins?

Right. And so Jane Fonda is on the Zodiac Council, which is a very normal sentence. And so is, so is-

• 1:02:29Amanda Dobbins?

By the way, so is Post Malone. He's the Leo and he's incredible. And I almost put him on this list. Yes. I, we have had this conversation on this podcast before, but he is incredible. In The Greatest Love Story Never Told, just respectfully hitting on Jennifer Lopez.

• 1:02:45Sean Fennessey?

You know what's really hard for me to accept?

• 1:02:47Amanda Dobbins?

  What?

• 1:02:47Sean Fennessey?

That he was extremely solid filling in for Kurt Cobain in Nirvana on the SNL 50 Music Special. Like honestly, it was pretty good.

• 1:02:55Amanda Dobbins?

He's really, he's really good in this.

• 1:02:58Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:02:58Amanda Dobbins?

So I, but like, that's what made me understand Post Malone. But anyway, Jane Fonda is there doing her lines. Uh, and then, but she is also checking in with Jennifer Lopez about her romantic decisions. And it's like, but, and it's trying to be like, but we just want to be sure that you're okay. You know, and she's like, and so people, the interest is about you and your heart. And, but also like, it's very quietly being like, you know, is your money tied up? You know, somewhere. Uh, and Jane Fonda turned out to be right, so.

• 1:03:30Sean Fennessey?

Are you making a bid for Jane Fonda?

• 1:03:32Amanda Dobbins?

No, I just, like, I wanted to put some context to that.

• 1:03:36Sean Fennessey?

I think most people in America would say that Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel should win.

• 1:03:40Amanda Dobbins?

I absolutely refuse to do that.

• 1:03:41Sean Fennessey?

I'm not saying we should. I'm not saying that we should. This is our, our Alternative Academy Awards.

• 1:03:46Amanda Dobbins?

They can do what they want. They have the original soundtrack. They can listen to it all the time.

• 1:03:51Sean Fennessey?

  Okay. You seem very mad.

• 1:03:53Amanda Dobbins?

I did not like that movie. And that was like a new song that they had written. I mean, they're, they're very good.

• 1:03:59Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. I thi- I think it was a cover of Ramstein's Du Host, as I recall.

• 1:04:02Amanda Dobbins?

We are not giving it to Wicked.

• 1:04:04Sean Fennessey?

I want to do Kid Cudi.

• 1:04:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay, I love that.

• 1:04:07Sean Fennessey?

  I thought that was funny.

• 1:04:07Amanda Dobbins?

  It was really, really funny.

• 1:04:09Sean Fennessey?

  Okay. That's what I'm choosing.

• 1:04:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:04:10Sean Fennessey?

No disrespect to Wesley's Nights, who I love, but, okay. Best kid performance. I really, I got in my bag for this one.

• 1:04:16Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:17Sean Fennessey?

I feel good about these picks. Uh, the, the bracket here is 17 years or younger.

• 1:04:22Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:04:23Sean Fennessey?

Um, I believe there did used to be a juvenile Oscar category many years ago on the Academy Awards. I think they should bring this back. The nominees this year, would you like to read them?

• 1:04:32Amanda Dobbins?

Sure. Grace Delaney, We Live in Time. Ian Forman, I Saw the TV Glow. Dan How, Speak No Evil. Isaac Wang, Dee Dee. Zoe Ziegler, Janet Planet. My movie phone, phone voice is getting pretty good.

• 1:04:44Sean Fennessey?

  I totally agree.

• 1:04:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Thank you so much.

• 1:04:45Sean Fennessey?

You've been broadcasting professionally for almost 10 years.

• 1:04:49Amanda Dobbins?

That is really horrifying when you put it like that. Um, haven't seen We Live in Time, can't see it, I'm very sorry. I'm just too emotionally raw.

• 1:04:58Sean Fennessey?

I need you to see it.

• 1:04:59Amanda Dobbins?

  No, I won't.

• 1:05:00Sean Fennessey?

I need you to. I know I ask you to see movies all the time, but I need you to see it. I need to have a long conversation with you about it.

• 1:05:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Very manipulative and upsetting.

• 1:05:08Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. This show was made for this movie. It's an intersection in a way that most movies are not intersections. All the times I ask you to watch a fucking comic book movie and you come on and you're like, I'll do it.

• 1:05:21Sean Fennessey?

I'll ask questions about Marvel lore, but you won't watch a movie. I'm not even thinking you're gonna like it, you might hate it.

• 1:05:27Amanda Dobbins?

No, but it's like, listen, I'm still like, I don't, I try not to play this card too often, but I like, I'm still sort of like in the weird postpartum emotional zone. I like, there's.

• 1:05:37Sean Fennessey?

You're now saying I'm bullying you into doing this?

• 1:05:39Amanda Dobbins?

I can't, no, I just, I'm trying to protect myself.

• 1:05:42Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:05:43Amanda Dobbins?

  And my heart's not ready.

• 1:05:44Sean Fennessey?

Okay, then in exchange, you have to go see Brave New World again by yourself.

• 1:05:49Amanda Dobbins?

  Which one is that?

• 1:05:50Sean Fennessey?

  Captain America.

• 1:05:50Amanda Dobbins?

That was so bad, but I would take a really good nap, so.

• 1:05:55Sean Fennessey?

To have the Clockwork Orange Machine on your eyes. I think, I think Zoe Ziegler is amazing in Janet Planet, so I, this would be my choice. A movie that I liked that we didn't spend a lot of time on, on the show, Annie Baker's directorial debut. A movie about a mom and a young girl, is she like nine in this movie, eight or nine, something like that? And she's extraordinary, so Zoe Ziegler will be our winner. No disrespect to Dan Huff, who seemingly, it looked like he had his tongue cut out to perform in Speak No Evil. It's a tough beat for him, don't think he actually had his tongue cut out in real life.

• 1:06:27Amanda Dobbins?

  Hope not.

• 1:06:27Sean Fennessey?

Uh, that would be not ideal. Best performance by a dog?

• 1:06:31Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:32Sean Fennessey?

This is a very serious award show.

• 1:06:35Amanda Dobbins?

So, here's the thing, so by a dog.

• 1:06:38Sean Fennessey?

  Uh huh.

• 1:06:39Amanda Dobbins?

Is really standing in to represent the whole animal community.

• 1:06:42Sean Fennessey?

  This year it is.

• 1:06:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:43Sean Fennessey?

  Um, I'll read the nominees.

• 1:06:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:06:46Sean Fennessey?

The nominees are the Night Bitches from Night Bitch. These are the dogs that follow the Night Bitch in Charge.

• 1:06:53Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:53Sean Fennessey?

As portrayed by Amy Adams, a mother of a young child. Perhaps you're experiencing some Night Bitchery here on the show between the two of us. The next nominee is not a dog, but a cat. Frodo the Cat from A Quiet Place Day One. This is the cat that trails Lupita Nyong'o throughout the film. The next nominee is Dogpool.

• 1:07:11Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:12Sean Fennessey?

This is a dog Deadpool Wolverine. It's dressed up like Deadpool.

• 1:07:15Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:07:16Sean Fennessey?

And then the fourth and final nominee, because we ran out of animals, is the rats from Nosferatu. 5,000 trained rats that ran through the streets of Germany, trailing an ancient demon that wanted to fuck and drain the blood of Lily Rose Depp in the movie Nosferatu.

• 1:07:35Amanda Dobbins?

  I was just like.

• 1:07:36Sean Fennessey?

This is, you're getting paid for this.

• 1:07:37Amanda Dobbins?

There is a Sundance drama waiting that is the story of the rat trainer starring Chris Ryan.

• 1:07:49Amanda Dobbins?

We will win and 5,000 trained rats. And here's a little piece of, oh, no, it needs to.

• 1:07:56Sean Fennessey?

I think they should win. I think they should win. Those rats were extraordinary. Their, their work touched me.

• 1:08:02Amanda Dobbins?

How much do you know about their training? Like, what is the extent of it?

• 1:08:06Sean Fennessey?

But I suspect that Robert Eggers knows a lot.

• 1:08:08Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:09Sean Fennessey?

He's in the weeds on that.

• 1:08:10Amanda Dobbins?

  They're not potty trained.

• 1:08:12Sean Fennessey?

No, well, that's part of the appeal.

• 1:08:13Amanda Dobbins?

Right. Yeah, but they are, they can.

• 1:08:15Sean Fennessey?

The authentic nature of the performance.

• 1:08:16Amanda Dobbins?

They go where they need to go?

• 1:08:19Sean Fennessey?

  Yes, which is everywhere.

• 1:08:20Amanda Dobbins?

Okay, you can give it to the rats.

• 1:08:23Sean Fennessey?

  Congratulations to the rats.

• 1:08:26Sean Fennessey?

Nice job by you guys. The rats, everybody. Cheers. Okay, the next category is best casting. Will you read the nominees, Amanda?

• 1:08:34Amanda Dobbins?

Yes. All We Imagine Is Light, Blink Twice, The Last Stop at Yuma County, Saturday Night, and Snack Shack.

• 1:08:40Sean Fennessey?

I kind of went ham on this category. I was like, I'm trying to get some titles in here that we're not gonna be able to recognize elsewhere. You added Blink Twice, which I thought was smart. That is a very good cast in a movie that I don't love.

• 1:08:50Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, but you're excited every time someone else shows up.

• 1:08:53Sean Fennessey?

  You did watch Saturday Night?

• 1:08:55Amanda Dobbins?

  I did.

• 1:08:55Sean Fennessey?

  You hated it?

• 1:08:56Amanda Dobbins?

  I didn't hate it.

• 1:08:58Sean Fennessey?

  Okay, did you like it?

• 1:08:59Amanda Dobbins?

The Chevy Chase guy was very good.

• 1:09:02Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:09:03Amanda Dobbins?

And I like some of the other people in the film, have to be honest.

• 1:09:07Sean Fennessey?

Corey Michael Smith, the Chevy Chase guy's name.

• 1:09:09Amanda Dobbins?

I, I thought a major role was miscast.

• 1:09:14Sean Fennessey?

  Just say it.

• 1:09:15Amanda Dobbins?

Well, Gabriel Bell is a great actor and way too young to be Lord Michaels. And that, that was, that stuck out a bit, but it's, it's a good ensemble.

• 1:09:22Sean Fennessey?

Funny, I watched it on a plane for a second time, about two thirds of it. I wasn't able to finish it because the flight ended, but um.

• 1:09:31Sean Fennessey?

  I still like it. Like, I don't.

• 1:09:32Amanda Dobbins?

  I didn't dislike it.

• 1:09:33Sean Fennessey?

It really got dumped on, and I know that everybody has it out for Reitman and, you know, but I think it's entertaining. I think it's okay for it not to be a perfect movie. I don't know.

• 1:09:43Amanda Dobbins?

I, no, it's fine for it to be a perfect movie. And you made the point that if you didn't know that it was Reitman, that you would just kind of go along with it.

• 1:09:52Sean Fennessey?

  Right.

• 1:09:52Amanda Dobbins?

And I mostly went along with it. Like, I felt that some of the quote unquote flourishes and the, like,

• 1:10:02Amanda Dobbins?

were annoying, you know? And I was like, okay, yeah, I understand you're trying to recreate minute by minute and you're doing all your like fake wonders. Yeah. Or I was just like, like, I don't care about all this and you're like, not that good at filmmaking, respectfully. So.

• 1:10:14Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:16Amanda Dobbins?

But yeah, sure. I like, I read the SNL book too, you know? I like that stuff. It's fun when there are famous people together in a room or talented young people playing famous people.

• 1:10:25Sean Fennessey?

What do you think should win this category? You didn't see Last Stop in Umi County, right?

• 1:10:29Amanda Dobbins?

No, I didn't. And I still have not seen Snack Shack, which is.

• 1:10:33Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, that's, that's a good one.

• 1:10:34Amanda Dobbins?

I know. Instead, I chose to watch Here last night, which we'll come back to.

• 1:10:38Sean Fennessey?

  Fuck, yeah. We will.

• 1:10:41Amanda Dobbins?

So, you know, we could do Saturday Night. We could do Snack Shack. You could do Last Stop. I'll let you decide.

• 1:10:50Sean Fennessey?

Thank you very much. That's very generous of you.

• 1:10:52Amanda Dobbins?

  You're so welcome.

• 1:10:53Sean Fennessey?

Um, well, why don't we do Snack Shack?

• 1:10:56Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:10:56Sean Fennessey?

Since it is a smaller cast, but it does feature a great Gabrielle Bell performance. In fact, I would say as much as the Fableman's a star making performance. Also Connor Sherry, who is really the lead of the movie. He's amazing in the movie. Nick Robinson's very good in this movie. David Costabile from Billions and Gillian Vigman from Step Brothers is a person I think of, is the role that I think of for her. As Connor Sherry's parents. And then Mika Abdullah is the love interest, and she's great too. A bunch of people I haven't seen before, a bunch of people who are like, who is that? What's their name? So to me, that should speak to the greatness of this performance. So Snack Shack for best casting. Glad to get Snack Shack a W on the board. Okay, best stunt action sequence.

• 1:11:39Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:11:40Sean Fennessey?

  You want to read them?

• 1:11:41Amanda Dobbins?

No, I think it's your turn.

• 1:11:42Sean Fennessey?

Okay, it's my turn to read them. Adam versus Lazarus. The Beekeeper. This is the crazy Kiwi guy at the end with the wild hair.

• 1:11:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, right.

• 1:11:52Sean Fennessey?

No, not Kiwi, South African, excuse me.

• 1:11:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay, yeah, I remember.

• 1:11:55Sean Fennessey?

He's like, "Oh, I had him. We're gonna fight." The High Rise Raid from Civil War. The Beaver Brawl from Hundreds of Beavers. The War Rig from Furiosa, Mad Max Saga. And the movie theater from Twisters.

• 1:12:11Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:12Sean Fennessey?

Did we forget anything here? This is a funky category.

• 1:12:14Amanda Dobbins?

I'm sure that we did. And there is also a little bit of like, are we gonna reward like, you know, pure technical, like filmmaking achievement? Or are we gonna reward like the most fun that we had?

• 1:12:25Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, there's no John Wick 4 this year.

• 1:12:27Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, which would be both.

• 1:12:29Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:30Amanda Dobbins?

So it's really, I know where I go.

• 1:12:34Sean Fennessey?

You wanna do the War Rig?

• 1:12:36Amanda Dobbins?

No, I mean, that is obviously like the biggest, you know, what? It took them like eight years and, you know.

• 1:12:43Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, you're gonna see the movie theater.

• 1:12:45Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I had the most fun with the movie theater, but I don't expect us to do that one. I'm just saying.

• 1:12:51Sean Fennessey?

But I don't wanna put my thumb on the scale of every category. And I was, you know, I was, I could, I was critical at times of Furiosa. But that scene in particular is as excited in a movie theater as I've been in a long time.

• 1:13:04Amanda Dobbins?

  I think that's fine.

• 1:13:06Sean Fennessey?

Will you allow me that selection? Or you wanna do Lazarus because you like the South African guy?

• 1:13:11Amanda Dobbins?

No, that wasn't, that wasn't my favorite sequence in The Beekeeper. The opening sequence is my favorite, but that's not really an action sequence.

• 1:13:18Sean Fennessey?

What was the opening sequence again?

• 1:13:20Amanda Dobbins?

  Felicia Rashad gets scammed.

• 1:13:22Sean Fennessey?

  Right.

• 1:13:23Amanda Dobbins?

So, and then, and then the fake Hillary Clinton is running around later on. I liked that as well and whatever.

• 1:13:29Sean Fennessey?

She's kind of a Trump Clinton.

• 1:13:31Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, well.

• 1:13:32Sean Fennessey?

She's like a businesswoman, you know, who got into the public office.

• 1:13:37Amanda Dobbins?

And then, whatever, what's the PETA? Josh Hutcherson.

• 1:13:45Sean Fennessey?

  What's the little boy?

• 1:13:49Sean Fennessey?

  Josh Hutcherson.

• 1:13:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Josh Hutcherson, that's right.

• 1:13:53Sean Fennessey?

Come on, you got it. Only one hour left. Hang in there.

• 1:14:03Sean Fennessey?

Jack Sanders needs to eat lunch so bad.

• 1:14:05Amanda Dobbins?

I'm sorry, Jack. Okay, all right. Yeah, it should be The Warwick. You're right.

• 1:14:11Sean Fennessey?

Okay, thank you. The Warwick Furiosa. Okay, best ending. You can read the nominees.

• 1:14:15Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. Challengers, do not expect too much from the end of the world. Here, juror number two, small things like these.

• 1:14:24Sean Fennessey?

  You added juror number two.

• 1:14:28Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:28Sean Fennessey?

And that was it to this category. And then I was like, is this, is this done for? Or am I expected to add more here? I couldn't figure out what message you were trying to send me.

• 1:14:37Amanda Dobbins?

  Well, I knew my vote.

• 1:14:39Sean Fennessey?

I'm willing to accept that if you want that to be the win. Having seen Here, you felt no.

• 1:14:44Amanda Dobbins?

I will say that the ending, obviously, is what brings it together. Like, I'm not gonna say that I wasn't moved by the last scene of Here.

• 1:14:54Sean Fennessey?

  I was in tears.

• 1:14:55Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, of course I was. Like, but that's just, you can't have, like...

• 1:15:02Sean Fennessey?

That's gonna be me reeling you out on the last pod ever.

• 1:15:05Amanda Dobbins?

I know, but you can't have, like, it's Tom Hanks being like the nice guy being like, oh, you know, of course I'm gonna cry, like, I'm programmed to cry. Like, a lifetime of conditioning to cry.

• 1:15:17Sean Fennessey?

  No, no, it's human nature.

• 1:15:19Amanda Dobbins?

I think I texted you when, like, Benjamin Franklin rolled by, like, the weird colonial house in one of the box things.

• 1:15:24Sean Fennessey?

A lot of shit happened there. That's why it's called Here.

• 1:15:26Amanda Dobbins?

  I don't know. I don't really feel...

• 1:15:29Sean Fennessey?

  It was Benjamin Franklin's son.

• 1:15:31Amanda Dobbins?

Okay, well, that movie did not work for me. Um, even though the ending was very beautiful, but there was just something like...

• 1:15:41Sean Fennessey?

When are you gonna get it together?

• 1:15:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Stilted about the... Whatever.

• 1:15:44Sean Fennessey?

We've been doing this for so long.

• 1:15:44Amanda Dobbins?

I gave it a damn try. And I did think that the ending, but the ending is not commensurate with the rest of the experience.

• 1:15:53Sean Fennessey?

What's the movie where it's like, we were counting on you. We were all counting on you. That's how I feel about you letting me down on Here. I think juror number two is the right pick.

• 1:16:01Amanda Dobbins?

Yes, of course it is. It's so good.

• 1:16:03Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I love that ending. I did wanna put Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World in honor of Adam Namon, who also loved juror number two. I'm sure he would appreciate that. But Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World, the ending of the movie is 45 minutes long. Um, it's very, very funny. Okay. Juror number two, congratulations. Congrats to Clint. I'm sure he's listening to this episode. Thank you for all you've done, Clint. The Glenn Close Memorial It's Time Oscar.

• 1:16:30Sean Fennessey?

Got a case of the gigglies.

• 1:16:34Amanda Dobbins?

I was imagining Clint, like, and the podcast gets stuck on 2X and he's just like, what the hell is this?

• 1:16:39Sean Fennessey?

You think he has wired headphones or AirPods?

• 1:16:41Amanda Dobbins?

  I hope so.

• 1:16:42Sean Fennessey?

Big, like, professional grade cans over his ears?

• 1:16:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:16:46Sean Fennessey?

Glenn Close Memorial, It's Time Oscar. Glenn Close still does not have an Academy Award. Sorry to her. It's a real shame. Don't think she's gonna get one anytime soon.

• 1:16:54Amanda Dobbins?

This was really nice because we were in the dock at the same time and I was like going to this to type in the name of our, of this year's Glenn Close Memorial, It's Time Oscar. And you had already written it. And I was like, wow, sometimes, sometimes it's here and sometimes it's this moment that we have. So I'm so, I'm pleased and proud and, and a little bit honored because I did get to, um, I, I think I helped push this over the hill, you know, to announce.

• 1:17:23Sean Fennessey?

Wait, I just take here out of your goddamn mouth for the future, okay? Cause that movie is very special to me and I won't have you blaspheming it anymore.

• 1:17:32Amanda Dobbins?

You saw it like alone on a Friday afternoon at which?

• 1:17:34Sean Fennessey?

  I did.

• 1:17:34Amanda Dobbins?

  Local multiplex?

• 1:17:35Sean Fennessey?

I think it was the, um, the Americana.

• 1:17:38Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:17:39Sean Fennessey?

  The AMC.

• 1:17:39Amanda Dobbins?

  All right.

• 1:17:40Sean Fennessey?

I sat in the second row.

• 1:17:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:17:42Sean Fennessey?

Cause all the seats were taken. I was the youngest man by about 30 years in the screening. And we were all crying.

• 1:17:48Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:49Sean Fennessey?

There was beautiful couples surrounding me, Angelenos.

• 1:17:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:52Sean Fennessey?

Alike, who admire the craft and vision.

• 1:17:54Amanda Dobbins?

What movie did I text you from recently where there was someone just like openly sobbing at the end of the movie?

• 1:17:59Sean Fennessey?

  Was it Craven the Hunter?

• 1:18:01Amanda Dobbins?

  It'll come to me.

• 1:18:01Sean Fennessey?

Okay. Uh, the winner of the Glenn Close Memorial, It's Time Oscar is?

• 1:18:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Michael Keaton.

• 1:18:07Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. He, uh, performed in three films and directed one of those films.

• 1:18:11Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:18:12Sean Fennessey?

  In 2024.

• 1:18:12Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:13Sean Fennessey?

Goodrich, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, and Knox Goes Away. Which is he getting this award for?

• 1:18:20Amanda Dobbins?

  I think for Goodrich?

• 1:18:23Sean Fennessey?

I think so too, but it could be Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

• 1:18:24Amanda Dobbins?

It could be both. Why can't it be both?

• 1:18:26Sean Fennessey?

  Alright, that's cool.

• 1:18:26Amanda Dobbins?

  Like, we're in charge.

• 1:18:27Sean Fennessey?

But Knox goes away, you think should be abolished?

• 1:18:28Amanda Dobbins?

  I...

• 1:18:29Sean Fennessey?

You think it should go away?

• 1:18:30Amanda Dobbins?

I do. It was not my favorite of his performances or his efforts this year.

• 1:18:35Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:18:36Amanda Dobbins?

Goodrich is great. People are really, uh, are coming on the Goodrich train.

• 1:18:40Sean Fennessey?

It's very good. It's on Max.

• 1:18:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:42Sean Fennessey?

Watch it now. Quality film. Those are the nine goofball awards that we have created.

• 1:18:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:18:47Sean Fennessey?

Uh, congratulations to Keaton. Where do you think he's partying tonight at the after-party? Where do you think he's had an In-N-Out Burger?

• 1:18:52Amanda Dobbins?

I think he's like, he's like really into cycling, I think.

• 1:18:57Sean Fennessey?

  Cycling?

• 1:18:58Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:58Sean Fennessey?

  Isn't he a man in his 70s?

• 1:19:00Amanda Dobbins?

Well, yeah, but I think he's in great shape.

• 1:19:02Sean Fennessey?

You know how I feel about cycling?

• 1:19:03Amanda Dobbins?

  How?

• 1:19:03Sean Fennessey?

  Not a fan.

• 1:19:04Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:19:04Sean Fennessey?

  Don't like it.

• 1:19:05Amanda Dobbins?

So, you know how I feel about people who wear spandex to do cycling as like a organized group and threaten other pedestrians?

• 1:19:14Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:14Amanda Dobbins?

  Which is really negative.

• 1:19:16Sean Fennessey?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:19:16Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, no one needs your Peloton.

• 1:19:18Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:19:19Amanda Dobbins?

People using any type of cycle to get from point A to B is great.

• 1:19:23Sean Fennessey?

  What about city bikes?

• 1:19:25Amanda Dobbins?

  I feel good about those.

• 1:19:26Sean Fennessey?

Okay. Uh, let's go to the seven core categories at our award show.

• 1:19:30Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:19:31Sean Fennessey?

  The first is best screenplay.

• 1:19:33Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:19:34Sean Fennessey?

The nominees are Justin Kuritzky's Challengers, Mike Lee Hard Truths, Richard Linklater and Glenn Powell Hitman, Kelly O'Sullivan Ghostlight, and Aaron Schimberg A Different Man. Any of these movies could have been nominated for Academy Award.

• 1:19:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:48Sean Fennessey?

They probably should have been. Maybe all of them should have been. Tricky one, our guy Glenn.

• 1:19:52Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:53Sean Fennessey?

Nice to see him here. His first alternative Oscar.

• 1:19:56Amanda Dobbins?

  Is it his first?

• 1:19:57Sean Fennessey?

  Maybe it's not.

• 1:19:58Amanda Dobbins?

Surely he was nominated for a Top Gun Maverick in some capacity.

• 1:20:03Sean Fennessey?

Best dickhead? What was, what was the category that he was nominated in?

• 1:20:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Supporting?

• 1:20:07Sean Fennessey?

  Supporting actor. Could have been.

• 1:20:09Amanda Dobbins?

  Best ending?

• 1:20:11Amanda Dobbins?

  I mean, he would share.

• 1:20:12Sean Fennessey?

  Prize.

• 1:20:13Amanda Dobbins?

But he, well, he could share in it.

• 1:20:15Sean Fennessey?

I think that prize goes to Tom.

• 1:20:17Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:20:17Sean Fennessey?

  Or to Chris McCoury.

• 1:20:18Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:20:19Sean Fennessey?

  Tough one here.

• 1:20:20Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:20Sean Fennessey?

I'm inclined to acknowledge Mike Lee at the end of his career.

• 1:20:24Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, I am as well.

• 1:20:27Sean Fennessey?

Not, not saying he's dying or anything.

• 1:20:28Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:20:29Sean Fennessey?

I don't know how many more movies he's gonna make. Dick Pope, his great cinematographer, passed away this year.

• 1:20:33Amanda Dobbins?

Is this where you want to do it, is all I would say, because we have more awards.

• 1:20:38Sean Fennessey?

Intriguing. You would like to give Justin Krasinski some, some love for Challengers?

• 1:20:41Amanda Dobbins?

I, I do love that movie, as, as do you.

• 1:20:45Sean Fennessey?

  I do.

• 1:20:45Amanda Dobbins?

  And I think.

• 1:20:48Sean Fennessey?

An incredible romp. If Wesley were here today, he would say he does not.

• 1:20:51Amanda Dobbins?

He does not, yeah. So we, we have a little bit more freedom in The Challengers.

• 1:20:56Amanda Dobbins?

I'm just wondering whether Hard Truce is gonna get some other love. So I, I think that Aaron Schimberg should have been nominated for A Different Man as well. But I think Justin Krasinski's Mike Lee and Aaron Schimberg all should have been nominated for real Oscars, so.

• 1:21:08Sean Fennessey?

  I agree.

• 1:21:09Amanda Dobbins?

  You know.

• 1:21:10Sean Fennessey?

I agree. I would do Aaron Schimberg.

• 1:21:12Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. As long as we make sure to acknowledge what, what, which we can.

• 1:21:16Sean Fennessey?

That movie had a great ending, too. We didn't put it in best ending.

• 1:21:19Amanda Dobbins?

  It does.

• 1:21:19Sean Fennessey?

  At the restaurant.

• 1:21:20Amanda Dobbins?

  It's really, really funny.

• 1:21:20Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:21Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:21Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:21:21Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:21:22Sean Fennessey?

All right, we'll do Aaron Schimberg for A Different Man, which is, I believe, also streaming on Max right now. And if people have not seen it, they should check that movie out.

• 1:21:28Amanda Dobbins?

  Wonderful.

• 1:21:29Sean Fennessey?

Honestly, great performances. Best Supporting Actor.

• 1:21:32Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:21:33Sean Fennessey?

I like this category quite a bit.

• 1:21:35Amanda Dobbins?

You like the list of people that we've.

• 1:21:37Sean Fennessey?

  I do.

• 1:21:37Amanda Dobbins?

  I think it's my turn.

• 1:21:39Sean Fennessey?

  You're right.

• 1:21:39Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. George McKay, The Beast, Clarence Macklin, Sing Sing, James McAvoy, Speak No Evil, Adam Pearson, A Different Man, and Jesse Plemons, Civil War.

• 1:21:50Sean Fennessey?

Now, this is tough. I mean, Clarence Macklin, agree with you, should have been nominated for an Oscar, could have given him breakthrough performance.

• 1:21:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:57Sean Fennessey?

Could have recognized that all the way across. Jesse Plemons in Civil War is a radioactive, powerful, naturally occurring element.

• 1:22:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:22:06Sean Fennessey?

That when you watch that movie, even if like you, you didn't believe that movie for a minute, you still were like.

• 1:22:10Amanda Dobbins?

  That one scene is completely.

• 1:22:13Sean Fennessey?

  It's like, it is.

• 1:22:14Amanda Dobbins?

And it's him. And if he were in the rest of the movie, you'd be like, oh, maybe I would.

• 1:22:19Sean Fennessey?

  He is carrying it.

• 1:22:20Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:21Sean Fennessey?

And he does this, you know, he's very funny in Kinds of Kindness as well. I think he, he won Best Actor at Cannes this year. He did. Where he's just, there's something very deeply unsettling about whatever's going on in his mind. He did this as far back as Breaking Bad when he was playing Todd. And it's only one scene.

• 1:22:38Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:39Sean Fennessey?

But it's one of the only scenes that tells us what's really going on. And it's pretty clear what's really going on.

• 1:22:44Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:22:44Sean Fennessey?

Who occupies what side, et cetera, et cetera. And I don't want to take anything away from Clarence Macklin because that sing thing is his movie in so many ways. And I think he should win. Supporting performance is an interesting category that is largely unexamined. And I think it would be more interesting if more frequently there were more parts like this that were going into the awards race. Some of the great winners are like this, you know, Beatrice Straight in Network is the one I always talk about where she gets one scene. And otherwise she's just like, oh, hey, how you doing to her husband in the kitchen or whatever.

• 1:23:12Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:23:14Sean Fennessey?

And I just want to make a note about that. I think Adam Pearson's great in A Different Man.

• 1:23:18Amanda Dobbins?

  He's wonderful.

• 1:23:19Sean Fennessey?

George Mackay is doing some crazy shit in The Beast. Very weird, hard performance.

• 1:23:23Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, right, George Mackay, I apologize for mispronouncing his name. He's like very, because I was on Harris Dickinson Instagram. We'll come back to it.

• 1:23:32Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:23:33Amanda Dobbins?

But then I get a lot of George Mackay contact. Well, the chicken shop thing, you know.

• 1:23:38Sean Fennessey?

Did he go on Chicken Shop?

• 1:23:39Amanda Dobbins?

  He did.

• 1:23:40Sean Fennessey?

  Did they flirt?

• 1:23:41Amanda Dobbins?

  They did. Anyway.

• 1:23:43Sean Fennessey?

  What's her deal?

• 1:23:44Amanda Dobbins?

I don't really know. I think it's one of those, I think I'm too old for this situations. Okay.

• 1:23:50Sean Fennessey?

I think she's an official ambassador at the Academy Awards.

• 1:23:53Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, so.

• 1:23:54Sean Fennessey?

She's like one of the hosts. That's how they young it up. Have Amelia de Moldenburg, I believe her name is.

• 1:23:59Amanda Dobbins?

So she's gonna, they're gonna like cut to her and she'll be like.

• 1:24:03Sean Fennessey?

I think it's in the pre-show. So no offense to her, but don't watch her, watch us on YouTube.

• 1:24:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, okay.

• 1:24:07Sean Fennessey?

On Sunday at 2:30 PM PST.

• 1:24:09Amanda Dobbins?

James McAvoy, as always, completely delightful.

• 1:24:12Sean Fennessey?

He cooks and the movie doesn't work at all without him. It's category fraud, putting him in this category because the movie's kind of on his shoulders.

• 1:24:18Amanda Dobbins?

  I guess so.

• 1:24:18Sean Fennessey?

But he's not the, he's not a perspective character.

• 1:24:20Amanda Dobbins?

I remember sitting there watching it, being like best supporting actor, like James McAvoy.

• 1:24:24Sean Fennessey?

  Really?

• 1:24:24Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:25Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:25Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, he sings Eternal Flame, so that is the way to my heart.

• 1:24:28Sean Fennessey?

He was great. Okay, Clarence Macklin's our winner, right?

• 1:24:30Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:24:31Sean Fennessey?

Okay, well, we'll give it to Clarence Macklin. It's a solid win for Clarence. McAvoy, better luck next year, buddy. Hope you do some great shit. Best Supporting Actress, another good category here. Joan Chen for Didi. Jodie Comer for The Bike Riders.

• 1:24:46Amanda Dobbins?

  I like The Voice.

• 1:24:47Sean Fennessey?

Anjou Ellis Taylor for Nickel Boys. Carol Kane for Between the Temples. And Aubrey Plaza for Megalopolis.

• 1:24:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:54Sean Fennessey?

  That's one for your boy.

• 1:24:59Sean Fennessey?

I don't know, what do you think?

• 1:25:01Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, this one, we like to have fun here at the Alternative Academy Awards, AKA the big picks. But this should just go to Agnew Alice Taylor.

• 1:25:10Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, I think so, too.

• 1:25:11Amanda Dobbins?

  Like, what are we doing?

• 1:25:11Sean Fennessey?

  I don't know why she's not nominated.

• 1:25:14Amanda Dobbins?

  I don't either.

• 1:25:15Sean Fennessey?

  Too small a part?

• 1:25:17Amanda Dobbins?

  I, I guess, or...

• 1:25:19Sean Fennessey?

  Didn't see that movie?

• 1:25:20Amanda Dobbins?

I think enough people, yeah. The broader...

• 1:25:23Sean Fennessey?

I know, I know it's a packed category or whatever, but it's just been Zoe Saldana all the way down and...

• 1:25:29Amanda Dobbins?

  I don't know.

• 1:25:30Sean Fennessey?

Okay, I'm down with Agnew Alice Taylor. Best actor. You ready to read these names? Oh, I see what you're doing. This is just crazy we were trying to pull, but I'll let you do it, okay?

• 1:25:39Amanda Dobbins?

Well, we've already awarded it, so...

• 1:25:41Sean Fennessey?

  Okay, go ahead.

• 1:25:43Amanda Dobbins?

Best actor. Just, just an incredible list. Josh O'Connor, Challengers. Harris Dickinson, Baby Girl. Hugh Grant, Heretic. Josh Hartnett, Trap. And Aaron Pierre, Rebel Ridge.

• 1:25:55Sean Fennessey?

Now, who did Aaron Pierre replace?

• 1:25:56Amanda Dobbins?

  Nicholas Holt, during number two.

• 1:25:58Sean Fennessey?

So during number two, he's already walked...

• 1:25:59Amanda Dobbins?

This is a no cucks list.

• 1:26:01Sean Fennessey?

Oh, but I thought it was a men Amanda wants to share a bed with list.

• 1:26:05Amanda Dobbins?

Well, also that, you know, so it's like we're overlapping.

• 1:26:10Sean Fennessey?

Josh O'Connor in Challengers, you like a guy like that?

• 1:26:13Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, the thing about that performance is that it's not the type of person that you're, you know, like, get your shit together, why are you being like this? Whatever, but there's something so magnetic about what he's doing.

• 1:26:27Sean Fennessey?

He looks like he really smells.

• 1:26:29Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, he does, but like, we've all been 25, you know?

• 1:26:32Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, sure.

• 1:26:33Amanda Dobbins?

  So...

• 1:26:33Sean Fennessey?

  Not me, but everybody else.

• 1:26:36Amanda Dobbins?

He's so good, even if it's like, not really my type.

• 1:26:39Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:26:40Amanda Dobbins?

But like, also, you know, Aaron Pierre is like, very solid in a way that is not normally my, you know, type, but undeniable.

• 1:26:48Sean Fennessey?

  I mean, he's objectively a handsome man.

• 1:26:50Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, I mean, like I said, undeniable, so...

• 1:26:53Sean Fennessey?

  This is quite a crew.

• 1:26:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:56Sean Fennessey?

Been meaning to revisit Heretic. I liked the first half so much.

• 1:27:00Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, and then it kind of does what it has to do. Or does it, or it kind of goes all over.

• 1:27:07Sean Fennessey?

  Hartnett?

• 1:27:08Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, that's the most fun. It probably should be Josh O'Connor, but we can do Challengers later.

• 1:27:14Sean Fennessey?

  Oh.

• 1:27:15Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, we don't have to, but...

• 1:27:17Sean Fennessey?

  No, no.

• 1:27:18Amanda Dobbins?

If we're like, sharing the wealth.

• 1:27:20Sean Fennessey?

  No, I, I, I'm with you.

• 1:27:23Amanda Dobbins?

  We have already honored...

• 1:27:26Amanda Dobbins?

  Trap.

• 1:27:28Sean Fennessey?

That's why I was gonna say Aaron Pierre makes sense, cuz I don't think we have another place to honor Rebel Ridge. Unless you wanna give that best picture.

• 1:27:35Amanda Dobbins?

I don't think I wanna give that best picture.

• 1:27:37Sean Fennessey?

Okay, so then my instinct would be Aaron Pierre.

• 1:27:39Amanda Dobbins?

Okay, I'm, I'm good with that.

• 1:27:41Sean Fennessey?

And you cucked out Nicholas Holt, even though he gave great performances across the board this year. He's great in the order.

• 1:27:46Amanda Dobbins?

  He's great.

• 1:27:47Sean Fennessey?

Um, he was in a third film that I can't recall at the moment.

• 1:27:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Nosferatu?

• 1:27:52Sean Fennessey?

Nosferatu, of course. He's great in that too. Cucking out.

• 1:27:55Amanda Dobbins?

Um, I, I don't know. It's gotta be, these five are really important.

• 1:28:02Sean Fennessey?

You're saying you would not share a bed with Nicholas Holt? Is that?

• 1:28:07Amanda Dobbins?

  No cocks.

• 1:28:08Sean Fennessey?

Okay, Aaron Pierre, Rebel Ridge, congratulations to you. Congratulations to that streaming film. Best actress?

• 1:28:14Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:15Sean Fennessey?

  You're reading?

• 1:28:17Amanda Dobbins?

No, I just did. It's your turn.

• 1:28:18Sean Fennessey?

Okay, Marianne Jean Baptiste, Hard Truths, Nicole Kidman, Baby Girl, Vicky Crepes, The Dead Don't Hurt, Lupita Nyong'o, A Quiet Place Day One, and Lily Rose Depp, Nosferatu.

• 1:28:29Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, Marianne Jean Baptiste without like a, this, this is the best actress winner for, for both of us IRL. Like, she should be nominated, she should be winning.

• 1:28:38Sean Fennessey?

  Psychotic.

• 1:28:40Amanda Dobbins?

I was just absolutely knocked over by this movie, which I, I saw later and I, and I saw it like a week after the fires. So I think I was like in a pretty emotional place, but the, like, the combination of like electric anger and despair is like, I've never, you've never seen anything like it. It instantly, instantly memorable, amazing movie. Not like uplifting?

• 1:29:14Sean Fennessey?

No, it's a very, it's a very hard movie to watch. It's a very hard movie to recommend to people at a time when some people are feeling really down. It's a very real movie, as with all Mike Lee movies. He kind of scratches at something about the nature of existence that feels very true and feels like you're sitting in front of someone.

• 1:29:34Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:34Sean Fennessey?

I don't know how he does that in movie after movie, but he's obviously got a working relationship with Marianne Jean Baptiste. They worked together in Secrets and Lies 30 years ago. And I don't think they've worked together since. And Panzi, the character that she plays, and I'm talking about this because we haven't talked about the movie really on the pod. Unlike almost any character you'll encounter in a movie as a protagonist. She's a deeply unhappy person, deeply difficult person. The movie does not provide answers or even psychologize her specifically. It doesn't confront you with whatever her trauma might be and say, this is why things are this way.

• 1:30:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 1:30:10Sean Fennessey?

This is why, this is how, it doesn't say, oh, she has depression or she's bipolar or it doesn't tell you any of those things. It doesn't, it almost tells you, don't think that way. Like empathy is understood in a different way, which is don't just assume that everybody who's difficult should be sent to hell immediately, which is tough stuff. It's like, it's hard for people to accept that, I think. And even watching the character, there's, I think I mentioned this to you once before, but the scene in the furniture store.

• 1:30:37Amanda Dobbins?

  The sofa, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:30:38Sean Fennessey?

Where like, we've all been there. We've all witnessed someone do that. We've all witnessed someone do that to a server at a restaurant where someone's just needlessly rude and aggressive and pursuing conflict. And you're like, what the fuck is this person's problem?

• 1:30:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 1:30:52Sean Fennessey?

And ultimately, it is her fault. I mean, it is her life, it is her, these are her decisions, but there's much more that goes into being alive, I think, than just, I'm happy today or I'm sad today.

• 1:31:04Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:04Sean Fennessey?

Um, so just a very complex, deep, but also very simple, like 90 minute character study.

• 1:31:12Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:31:13Sean Fennessey?

  Great movie.

• 1:31:14Amanda Dobbins?

  I mean, absolutely heartbreaking.

• 1:31:16Sean Fennessey?

Uh, Mary Ann Chavat's congratulations. Wish more people saw Hard Truths. I guess it will stream.

• 1:31:23Amanda Dobbins?

  I hope so.

• 1:31:24Sean Fennessey?

  Hulu.

• 1:31:25Amanda Dobbins?

Though again, it's like, fire this up.

• 1:31:28Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, for a lot of laughs.

• 1:31:29Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. I mean, I guess it's not, it's not funny funny. It's the type of uncomfortable where you might, as someone like me, might like laugh out of discomfort, you know? And like, oh my gosh, like why, why is this happening?

• 1:31:42Sean Fennessey?

A couple of the scenes are like that.

• 1:31:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:43Sean Fennessey?

Any scene that happens with the family.

• 1:31:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Is really.

• 1:31:46Sean Fennessey?

The son and the father, or even the extended family with her sister and her nieces. Pretty bracing stuff.

• 1:31:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:31:52Sean Fennessey?

  Um, anyhow.

• 1:31:54Sean Fennessey?

  Best director.

• 1:31:56Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, Mike Cheswick, Hundreds of Beavers, Robert Eggers, Nosferatu, Luca Guadagnino, Challengers, Pascal Plant, Red Rooms, Helena Rain, Baby Girls. Baby Girl.

• 1:32:06Sean Fennessey?

Baby Girls will be the secret.

• 1:32:08Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, I know. Sign me right up, yeah.

• 1:32:10Sean Fennessey?

Will that be more cougars getting dominated by young interns?

• 1:32:15Amanda Dobbins?

It's just what's next for Harris Dickinson.

• 1:32:19Sean Fennessey?

Bet it is. Um, this is our second to last award of the night.

• 1:32:24Sean Fennessey?

I don't know who wins this. We already represented Nosferatu with those rats.

• 1:32:28Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:29Sean Fennessey?

You know, Karitskis sitting on Challengers. This is why you shouldn't have given it to Karitskis because you need to give it to Luca here.

• 1:32:34Amanda Dobbins?

I didn't give it to Karitskis.

• 1:32:35Sean Fennessey?

  Who'd we give it to?

• 1:32:36Amanda Dobbins?

We gave it to Aaron Schinberg.

• 1:32:38Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, you're right.

• 1:32:38Amanda Dobbins?

  For different men.

• 1:32:39Sean Fennessey?

So we haven't given Challengers anything yet.

• 1:32:40Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. So, I mean, we can do it here.

• 1:32:43Sean Fennessey?

  Wow.

• 1:32:44Amanda Dobbins?

  Or...

• 1:32:45Sean Fennessey?

  Or?

• 1:32:46Amanda Dobbins?

  We could do Helena Rain.

• 1:32:47Sean Fennessey?

  Or?

• 1:32:48Amanda Dobbins?

Or, you want to do Nosferatu?

• 1:32:51Sean Fennessey?

  No.

• 1:32:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:32:52Sean Fennessey?

No. I think he directed that movie beautifully.

• 1:32:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:32:56Sean Fennessey?

But if you choose Luca, can you really choose Challengers as best picture?

• 1:32:59Amanda Dobbins?

No, that's why I was saying.

• 1:33:00Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:01Amanda Dobbins?

  Helena Rain for Baby Girl.

• 1:33:03Sean Fennessey?

  I'm with it.

• 1:33:04Amanda Dobbins?

  And then, and then?

• 1:33:06Sean Fennessey?

  Well, we'll see.

• 1:33:07Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:33:08Sean Fennessey?

  Helena Rain for Baby Girl.

• 1:33:09Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:09Sean Fennessey?

Best director. Great, I'm with it. Mike Cheswick, just want to give him some respect for making Hundreds of Beavers, which is insane. It's a live-action Looney Tunes movie. It's an almost two-hour movie about a guy fighting hundreds of beavers. This is cinema. To me, to me, this is cinema. Uh, okay. Best picture. Now, we didn't really sort out the true long list. I attempted to cut it down somewhat.

• 1:33:33Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:33:34Sean Fennessey?

I didn't get it all the way down.

• 1:33:36Amanda Dobbins?

  To 10?

• 1:33:36Sean Fennessey?

  To 10.

• 1:33:37Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:33:38Sean Fennessey?

Did I cut anything that you see that is intriguing? Like, for example, I don't have Horizon Part One on here for the same reason that I don't really like the Wicked Part One aspect of things.

• 1:33:48Amanda Dobbins?

  So that's the only reason?

• 1:33:50Sean Fennessey?

Uh, Horizon Part One rocks. I really hope I can see Part Two soon.

• 1:33:56Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:57Sean Fennessey?

I hope Netflix picks up three and four because it doesn't seem like anybody else will.

• 1:34:01Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:34:01Sean Fennessey?

It's been rumored. Um, and it performed magnificently on the Netflix streaming service. Did you hear about that?

• 1:34:07Amanda Dobbins?

  I did.

• 1:34:08Sean Fennessey?

Uh, we had friends at the premiere of Part Two. They said, "Home run. You did it, Kev."

• 1:34:14Amanda Dobbins?

Kev, meanwhile, was sitting next to Cher at SNL 50.

• 1:34:17Sean Fennessey?

Kev watching Cher at SNL 50 Music Special? First of all, Cher, if I could turn back time at 77 years old or whatever?

• 1:34:26Amanda Dobbins?

  Alzheimer.

• 1:34:27Sean Fennessey?

  What the fuck, dude?

• 1:34:28Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:29Sean Fennessey?

She looked amazing. Her voice sounded good.

• 1:34:31Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:32Sean Fennessey?

Like, there are 32-year-old pop singers who sound like shit live.

• 1:34:35Amanda Dobbins?

  It's Cher.

• 1:34:36Sean Fennessey?

  Cher's in her mid-70s.

• 1:34:37Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, she's Cher.

• 1:34:39Sean Fennessey?

I, I, trust me, I get it, and I'm a fan. I've always been a fan, but I was blown away. And there's the reaction shot of Kostner in the audience being like, what the fuck? Blown away by her. Anyway, um, Horizon Not Nominated.

• 1:34:52Amanda Dobbins?

  By us.

• 1:34:54Sean Fennessey?

Sorry. Sorry, Kev. Good luck on part two. I, I listed 11 movies.

• 1:35:01Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. Well, we can have 11. It's our awards show.

• 1:35:04Sean Fennessey?

I'll list the 11. The Bike Riders.

• 1:35:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:35:07Sean Fennessey?

  Challengers.

• 1:35:08Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:35:08Sean Fennessey?

  Civil War.

• 1:35:09Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:35:09Sean Fennessey?

  A Different Man.

• 1:35:11Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:35:11Sean Fennessey?

Evil Does Not Exist, a Hamaguchi film. Hard Truths. Here, Don't Say Shit. Hitman. Nosferatu. Rebel Ridge, it's actually 12. Red Rooms.

• 1:35:22Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:35:22Sean Fennessey?

  And Sing Sing.

• 1:35:23Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:25Amanda Dobbins?

My thing about Here is like, why were they all acting like that? Like, everyone but Tom Hanks.

• 1:35:32Sean Fennessey?

I've been with you for like, six straight hours.

• 1:35:36Amanda Dobbins?

  But why?

• 1:35:38Sean Fennessey?

  What do you mean?

• 1:35:38Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, those are good actors, you know?

• 1:35:40Sean Fennessey?

Why were they acting in that manner?

• 1:35:41Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:35:43Sean Fennessey?

It's dramaturgy on it. What do you want me to tell you?

• 1:35:45Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I didn't, it didn't work for me.

• 1:35:47Sean Fennessey?

  So you're saying Here wins?

• 1:35:52Amanda Dobbins?

Um, let's see. We know I think it should go to Challengers. I would also consider...

• 1:36:01Amanda Dobbins?

I, I, Hard Truths, but, you know, I, we are trying to spread the love of...

• 1:36:05Sean Fennessey?

  We're spreading the love.

• 1:36:06Amanda Dobbins?

So we, we already did Mary Jean Baptiste. We did Clarence Macklin for Sing Sing. The Rats for Nosferatu. Hitman did not get...

• 1:36:14Sean Fennessey?

  Hmm.

• 1:36:15Amanda Dobbins?

Any awards, and we did like it very much. Did I like it more than I liked Challengers?

• 1:36:21Sean Fennessey?

  I didn't.

• 1:36:21Amanda Dobbins?

  I didn't.

• 1:36:22Sean Fennessey?

  I liked Hitman.

• 1:36:24Amanda Dobbins?

I liked Hitman a lot. I liked Rebel Ridge, but we've already honored Aaron Pierre.

• 1:36:28Sean Fennessey?

  Rebel Ridge rocks.

• 1:36:29Amanda Dobbins?

I liked A Different Man, but we've already honored Aaron Schimberg. I didn't like Civil War.

• 1:36:38Sean Fennessey?

Um, I say this like every, every other episode, but I will be proved right on that one.

• 1:36:44Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:36:45Sean Fennessey?

I think that movie is going to be a big deal, long term. I could be wrong.

• 1:36:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:50Sean Fennessey?

  But I don't think so.

• 1:36:51Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. Um, there are many things that are like a big deal, you know, that are still really stupid. So.

• 1:36:57Sean Fennessey?

  Could be true.

• 1:36:58Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:36:58Sean Fennessey?

  Could be true.

• 1:36:59Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, I won't be voting for it for best picture in the big picks in 2025.

• 1:37:03Sean Fennessey?

What if I just would not move off of Civil War and we just stood here for four hours? And I was like, this is the only place where this prize can go in my heart.

• 1:37:10Amanda Dobbins?

Tell you what was not eligible for best ending, Civil War.

• 1:37:15Sean Fennessey?

Uh, I thought it was funny.

• 1:37:17Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:37:17Sean Fennessey?

I thought it was a funny ending.

• 1:37:19Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay. Great job.

• 1:37:20Sean Fennessey?

  It was like.

• 1:37:21Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, haha.

• 1:37:22Sean Fennessey?

What a joke this society is. We just murdered the president.

• 1:37:24Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:25Sean Fennessey?

With a camera in our hands.

• 1:37:26Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:37:26Sean Fennessey?

Um, if you haven't seen Civil War, that was a spoiler.

• 1:37:30Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. I like The Bike Riders, but I don't think it needs to win here. It won number three on my top five list, so.

• 1:37:36Sean Fennessey?

Number, but would that have changed if you'd seen some other films?

• 1:37:38Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:37:39Sean Fennessey?

You hadn't seen Nickel Boys, The Brutalist, Hard Truths.

• 1:37:42Amanda Dobbins?

Hard Truths would definitely have been on there. Um, I'm trying to think what else.

• 1:37:48Sean Fennessey?

You wouldn't say that The Bike Riders is better than The Brutalist, right?

• 1:37:50Amanda Dobbins?

No, of course not. But you know, when I'm making my list, I can do whatever I want.

• 1:37:55Sean Fennessey?

  That's true.

• 1:37:56Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:56Sean Fennessey?

You, you will always have that right.

• 1:37:59Amanda Dobbins?

Um, I hadn't seen Baby Girl. Baby Girl's not on this list, but that's okay. We not, we.

• 1:38:05Sean Fennessey?

  Didn't even realize that.

• 1:38:05Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. I think it should be Challengers. We loved Challengers.

• 1:38:08Sean Fennessey?

It's Challengers. Of course it's Challengers. My third favorite movie of the year.

• 1:38:12Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. My second favorite movie of the year.

• 1:38:15Sean Fennessey?

  Behind the Brutalist?

• 1:38:16Amanda Dobbins?

Yes, exactly. How did you know? Especially the second half.

• 1:38:18Sean Fennessey?

  Challengers is great.

• 1:38:19Amanda Dobbins?

I really like the dining room scene.

• 1:38:20Sean Fennessey?

  I don't think.

• 1:38:21Amanda Dobbins?

And I spoiled it on the Academy Twitter account, so.

• 1:38:26Sean Fennessey?

  Um, Challengers.

• 1:38:29Sean Fennessey?

Don't get the blowback. I can understand people saying they don't love it as much as we do.

• 1:38:34Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, that's fine.

• 1:38:34Sean Fennessey?

The "this is bad" stuff? Don't get it.

• 1:38:37Amanda Dobbins?

Well, they don't know how to have fun.

• 1:38:38Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:38:39Amanda Dobbins?

You know, and we know how to have fun.

• 1:38:41Sean Fennessey?

  Zendaya, Mike Feist, Josh O'Connor.

• 1:38:44Amanda Dobbins?

  Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

• 1:38:45Sean Fennessey?

Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Karitskis, Luca.

• 1:38:48Amanda Dobbins?

  Churros.

• 1:38:49Sean Fennessey?

  Churros.

• 1:38:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Nike Activewear.

• 1:38:52Sean Fennessey?

Whatever Zendaya is wearing in all those scenes.

• 1:38:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:54Sean Fennessey?

Um, skincare, what do you like?

• 1:38:57Amanda Dobbins?

  What's this? Augustinus Bader.

• 1:38:58Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:58Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:59Sean Fennessey?

That's huge. Those watches that they're selling.

• 1:39:01Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:02Sean Fennessey?

Um, the fake TV program. I told you.

• 1:39:06Amanda Dobbins?

Sold by the way, maybe I should have ordered that for Oscar night. It's too late now.

• 1:39:11Sean Fennessey?

Is, in the event that you win, if you lose though, that could be very embarrassing.

• 1:39:15Amanda Dobbins?

  What?

• 1:39:15Sean Fennessey?

Wearing an "I told you" t-shirt.

• 1:39:18Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, no, I would just be wearing it for challengers.

• 1:39:21Sean Fennessey?

  I don't understand.

• 1:39:22Amanda Dobbins?

Just to honor challengers because the Oscars didn't, you know?

• 1:39:24Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, a silent protest?

• 1:39:25Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes, exactly.

• 1:39:28Sean Fennessey?

  Um, it's not too late.

• 1:39:31Amanda Dobbins?

For challengers to win an Oscar?

• 1:39:33Sean Fennessey?

I opened my challengers pop-up on Fairfax, so you could just swing by, pick up some of that.

• 1:39:38Amanda Dobbins?

I would love for you to run a pop-up on Fairfax and just watch you interacting with the.

• 1:39:43Sean Fennessey?

  What do you mean golfing?

• 1:39:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:39:45Sean Fennessey?

  That's what I do.

• 1:39:46Amanda Dobbins?

  God.

• 1:39:46Sean Fennessey?

I've been there since day one. Odd Future.

• 1:39:48Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay, yeah.

• 1:39:49Sean Fennessey?

  Check my resume.

• 1:39:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay, great.

• 1:39:51Sean Fennessey?

  I'm not new to this.

• 1:39:52Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:52Sean Fennessey?

  Me and Tyler, way back.

• 1:39:53Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:39:54Sean Fennessey?

Way back. Pitchfork.com, my friend. Uh, challengers, a very worthy winner.

• 1:39:58Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:40:01Sean Fennessey?

What other films could have been nominated but weren't? Furiosa?

• 1:40:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:06Sean Fennessey?

  Trap?

• 1:40:08Amanda Dobbins?

  We loved it.

• 1:40:09Sean Fennessey?

  The Beast?

• 1:40:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:40:10Sean Fennessey?

  Journey Number Two?

• 1:40:11Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:40:12Sean Fennessey?

  Hmm, Love Lies Bleeding?

• 1:40:14Amanda Dobbins?

  Good.

• 1:40:18Sean Fennessey?

I'm not gonna do that game with you anymore. Um, I say movie titles, you say adjectives. Or affirmative, or non-affirmative.

• 1:40:26Amanda Dobbins?

  I liked it.

• 1:40:27Sean Fennessey?

Uh, what really got snubbed here this year?

• 1:40:31Amanda Dobbins?

  You mean from our?

• 1:40:32Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, you won't watch We Learned Time, so we couldn't recognize that film.

• 1:40:35Amanda Dobbins?

Right. You're very upset about here. And...

• 1:40:39Sean Fennessey?

I just think these takes are bullshit. But I got Bobby leaving notes in the comments about how poorly written the movie is. Settle down, Bob. All right? Just respect cinema. That's all I ask. Uh, here he is.

• 1:40:51Speaker 09

I, I tried to respect the cinema. I tried really hard. I watched it at home. I was locked in.

• 1:40:55Amanda Dobbins?

  I did as well.

• 1:40:57Speaker 09

I loved the format. I, I was sad that I didn't get to see it in a theater. And then about like 48 minutes in, I was like, what are these scenes? It's like one pass of dialogue and then we're just going.

• 1:41:07Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:41:08Speaker 09

  Sorry.

• 1:41:09Sean Fennessey?

You guys are simpletons, thinking too much about the text.

• 1:41:11Speaker 09

  I do agree with that.

• 1:41:12Sean Fennessey?

Ending is sick. Very sad. Very sad.

• 1:41:16Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, of course it is.

• 1:41:17Sean Fennessey?

We're all gonna be there one day.

• 1:41:19Speaker 09

In an empty room, it reminded me of my first confession. That's how we did it at my church, because they didn't have enough money for a real confessional booth.

• 1:41:25Amanda Dobbins?

Wow. I mean, that is, that's a whole movie right there.

• 1:41:28Sean Fennessey?

  In Bruges Part Two. Uh...

• 1:41:31Amanda Dobbins?

I think we, we did a great job.

• 1:41:33Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:41:33Amanda Dobbins?

You know, we represented most of our favorites.

• 1:41:36Sean Fennessey?

  Should we add best kill?

• 1:41:39Sean Fennessey?

Because there's a kill in, in A Violent Nature, where like a, like a grappling hook goes inside of a girl and then they like pull out her intestines at the edge of a cliff.

• 1:41:49Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, I guess I wouldn't have a lot to contribute to that particular category.

• 1:41:52Sean Fennessey?

What if we just showed you those scenes for the first time and filmed you?

• 1:41:55Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. I mean, like, that would be fine.

• 1:41:58Sean Fennessey?

That's kind of a good bit.

• 1:41:59Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:41:59Sean Fennessey?

Is that a good Amanda in the void? Where we run the scene right beside the reaction shot of her face? I think that would work.

• 1:42:07Speaker 09

Did we just find our syllabus for Amanda?

• 1:42:08Amanda Dobbins?

I don't know, but what if I'm just like, huh, that seems bad, you know?

• 1:42:12Sean Fennessey?

  That sounds good content.

• 1:42:13Amanda Dobbins?

Sometimes when you and Chris, because I've listened to all of your like horror movie recaps, even though I've never seen the movies and have no intention of them. But then sometimes we'll be talking about a movie I have seen and you guys are describing the kills and like.

• 1:42:26Sean Fennessey?

And we're like, oh my god, dude.

• 1:42:28Amanda Dobbins?

Well, but you know, there's a level of detail where I'm just like, did I just like go to sleep like I, you know, and I saw it, but I guess I'm looking for something different. Yeah.

• 1:42:36Sean Fennessey?

  You old bear trap.

• 1:42:38Amanda Dobbins?

That's true for, for anything that is not, you know, personal human interaction.

• 1:42:42Sean Fennessey?

That's right. If it is depraved on film.

• 1:42:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 1:42:46Sean Fennessey?

  I can remember it.

• 1:42:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:42:47Sean Fennessey?

If it is emotional and connected to the real world.

• 1:42:49Amanda Dobbins?

That's why you liked here is because it's someone explaining to you.

• 1:42:53Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:42:53Amanda Dobbins?

How to have the emotions. Yes. Yeah. Here's what you don't remember about your feelings.

• 1:42:57Sean Fennessey?

It's obviously 100% true and I will not deny it.

• 1:42:59Amanda Dobbins?

  No. Okay.

• 1:43:00Sean Fennessey?

But you know what? At least I know it.

• 1:43:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:43:02Sean Fennessey?

  At least I'm in touch.

• 1:43:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Congratulations to all the winners.

• 1:43:05Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, they did great. Um, to the losers, fuck off, you know, like what, you know, I got really nothing for you tonight. Maybe next time. Sorry, Juliet Gherripi. Maybe you'll be the breakthrough performer next time around, you know?

• 1:43:17Amanda Dobbins?

Can you be eligible for breakthrough performance multiple times?

• 1:43:20Sean Fennessey?

  No.

• 1:43:21Amanda Dobbins?

So she won't be the breakthrough performer next time around.

• 1:43:24Sean Fennessey?

What if she goes away for 30 years and then comes back?

• 1:43:28Amanda Dobbins?

So it's a, well, that would be the comeback performance, which is also a category that we should introduce for next year, you know?

• 1:43:34Sean Fennessey?

  Intriguing. I'm interested in that.

• 1:43:36Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. That would be like Josh Hartnett would win that.

• 1:43:39Sean Fennessey?

Yes, although he was Lawrence in Oppenheimer.

• 1:43:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Right. Yeah.

• 1:43:44Sean Fennessey?

So that was, you know, that's a big movie.

• 1:43:46Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, that's true. And he like was a big part of, I mean, he wasn't a big part, but

• 1:43:51Sean Fennessey?

He was also, he had a big part in Rue de Guerre, the Guy Ritchie movie. You saw that film?

• 1:43:57Amanda Dobbins?

No, I don't think I saw that one.

• 1:43:58Sean Fennessey?

  He drives a sports car.

• 1:44:00Amanda Dobbins?

He wears a sweater in The Bear, season three.

• 1:44:03Sean Fennessey?

Mm hmm. Yep. So he does. He's just, I don't think Trap was really a comeback.

• 1:44:07Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. Well, I think that that is what she could be eligible for in 30 years.

• 1:44:12Sean Fennessey?

Anyone needs a comeback is Shannon Sossaman, his co-star in 40 Days and 40 Nights.

• 1:44:16Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:44:17Sean Fennessey?

Where's she at? What's up with Shannon Sossman?

• 1:44:20Amanda Dobbins?

  Googling right now.

• 1:44:21Sean Fennessey?

  Shannon with a Y.

• 1:44:22Speaker 09

You want me to get her on the phone?

• 1:44:24Amanda Dobbins?

  Let's see.

• 1:44:24Sean Fennessey?

  You're calling her?

• 1:44:25Speaker 09

You want me to get her on the phone?

• 1:44:26Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:26Speaker 09

You think that'd be a good end to this pod, this day of recording?

• 1:44:28Sean Fennessey?

  Shannon, what's up?

• 1:44:30Speaker 09

  Cold calling Shannon Sossman.

• 1:44:31Sean Fennessey?

  Big fan.

• 1:44:33Amanda Dobbins?

She's still working. She was in a film in 2023 called Backspot.

• 1:44:37Sean Fennessey?

  Backspot, you say?

• 1:44:38Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. And it's a fictional, it's like a scripted film about the world of competitive cheerleading. Evan Rachel Wood was apparently in this. I don't know who Shannon Sossman played because the Wikipedia page does not illuminate that for us.

• 1:44:54Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:44:55Amanda Dobbins?

  All right.

• 1:44:56Sean Fennessey?

  Backspot.

• 1:44:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Well, that's just, that's, that's what I'm learning.

• 1:45:01Sean Fennessey?

Maybe I'll write a film for Shannon Sossman.

• 1:45:03Amanda Dobbins?

I wouldn't say it's been the most illustrious of decades.

• 1:45:08Sean Fennessey?

It would appear she was born Shannon, S-H-A-N-N-O-N, and changed it to S-A-S-H-A-N-N-Y-N.

• 1:45:16Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:45:17Sean Fennessey?

I wonder if that's because there already was a Shannon Sossman in SAG.

• 1:45:21Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:22Sean Fennessey?

Or maybe she's just an unusual person who likes to change her name. Well, Shannon, thanks for all your work. Uh, thanks to Jack Sanders.

• 1:45:31Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:45:32Sean Fennessey?

Thanks to our producer, Bobby Wagner, for everything he provided on this episode, which is not interrupting us when I was talking about Gen Z. Thank you, Bob. Uh, later this week, we're predicting the Academy Awards.

• 1:45:43Amanda Dobbins?

  We sure are.

• 1:45:44Sean Fennessey?

  How you feeling?

• 1:45:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Uh, stressed out.

• 1:45:47Sean Fennessey?

Who will win and who should win? That's how we do it.

• 1:45:49Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:45:50Sean Fennessey?

Who do you think should win Best Picture? Don't say anything. Don't react. Don't talk. Uh, looking forward to that episode. Should be a lot of fun. This concludes the sixth hour of recording here right now in the big picture in case you couldn't tell. We'll see you on Wednesday?

• 1:46:07Amanda Dobbins?

You said Wednesday. We gotta book a time, but yes.

• 1:46:10Sean Fennessey?

  Fuck. Wednesday, Bob?

• 1:46:12Speaker 09

Should we just keep recording now? I mean, it's like getting to be performance art at this point.

• 1:46:15Amanda Dobbins?

So, hold on, let's keep recording. I do, I have a, a question about.

• 1:46:22Speaker 09

I'm in a phone booth on the 70th floor of the World Trade Center at 6:00 PM. So I'm just ready to keep going.

• 1:46:28Amanda Dobbins?

Um, so 2:30 PM on Sunday, are, are people submitting questions? Like, what's the, is there an interactive element?

• 1:46:36Sean Fennessey?

In the chat, you can send questions.

• 1:46:38Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:46:38Sean Fennessey?

Bob will help us pick questions while we're talking. YouTube chat.

• 1:46:42Amanda Dobbins?

So you have to have a YouTube account?

• 1:46:45Sean Fennessey?

I don't know how that works, but is there some other people who are like, fuck, I have to join YouTube?

• 1:46:48Amanda Dobbins?

  Jack's nodding, maybe.

• 1:46:50Speaker 09

If you have a Google account, you have a YouTube account. They're all part of the same.

• 1:46:54Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, yeah, that's right. But what if I had a different account from when I just had a YouTube account? What happened to that, Bobby? Can you find that account and sync up?

• 1:47:07Sean Fennessey?

I don't, it doesn't matter for you, you're gonna be on the episode.

• 1:47:10Amanda Dobbins?

  What if I?

• 1:47:11Sean Fennessey?

You're not gonna edit questions in the chat when you're talking to me.

• 1:47:14Speaker 09

I'm gonna be putting my Venmo name in the chat so that people can pay me to get their question answered.

• 1:47:21Speaker 09

Is it against some, some written policy that I don't know about?

• 1:47:25Sean Fennessey?

Okay, yeah, we'll be live on YouTube. But I'll, I'll tout that again later this week.

• 1:47:30Amanda Dobbins?

What I always wanted to do growing up was to be live on YouTube at 2:30 before the Oscars. As a mother of two children.

• 1:47:39Sean Fennessey?

But isn't it though? Is it, like, honestly, is it not what you wanted?

• 1:47:44Amanda Dobbins?

Um, I, live on YouTube? I don't know.

• 1:47:48Sean Fennessey?

You would like to be live on Truth Social?

• 1:47:51Speaker 09

How do you think Siskel would have handed a, handled a call-in episode? Cause that's basically what's going on here.

• 1:47:57Sean Fennessey?

I mean, they were in that environment all the time. They went on the radio all the time. They answered questions to promote their stuff.

• 1:48:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, that's true.

• 1:48:04Sean Fennessey?

This is, that's, we're just doing the same shit.

• 1:48:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:48:06Sean Fennessey?
