Chronic migraine means 15 or more headache days a month, each lasting four hours or more. Botox, onabacholinumtoxin A, is a chronic migraine treatment that prevents headaches in adults. It's not approved for adults with migraine who have 14 or fewer headache days a month. Botox prevents, on average, eight to nine headache days and migraine probable migraine days a month versus six to seven for placebo. Huh, I'm having fewer headache days this month. Prescription Botox is injected by your doctor. Effects of Botox may spread hours to weeks after injection, causing serious symptoms. Alert your doctor right away as difficulty swallowing, speaking, breathing, eye problems, or muscle weakness can be signs of a life-threatening condition. Patients with these conditions before injection are at highest risk. Side effects may include allergic reactions, neck and injection site pain, fatigue, and headache. Allergic reactions can include rash, welts, asthma symptoms, and dizziness. Don't receive Botox if there's a skin infection.

• 2:04Sean Fennessey?

  I'm Sean Finacy.

• 2:05Speaker 03

  I'm Amanda Dobbins.

• 2:06Sean Fennessey?

And this is the Big Picture, a conversation show about British things.

• 2:09Speaker 03

  And also, uh, women's things.

• 2:11Sean Fennessey?

Women's things, absolutely. A woman is here. It is not Amanda Yasi Salek Hayyasi. Hi, I'm so proud to be a woman. You are.

• 2:19Speaker 03

  Here on the picture.

• 2:21Sean Fennessey?

  Are you a British woman?

• 2:22Speaker 03

  Spiritually?

• 2:23Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 2:23Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 2:24Sean Fennessey?

You're adorning the Union Jack on your person today? You've also brought a flag?

• 2:28Speaker 03

Yeah, I'm a known Anglophile, like to the point where I'm like, we shouldn't have, we shouldn't have fought for our independence.

• 2:35Sean Fennessey?

You would still like to be under the king's reign?

• 2:37Speaker 03

  Well, yes.

• 2:38Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 2:38Speaker 03

  King Charles.

• 2:39Sean Fennessey?

King Charles. You believe he is a fearless leader?

• 2:42Speaker 03

I'm, I don't believe in the monarchy, but I believe in British, British culture, so.

• 2:46Sean Fennessey?

  Okay, and you agree, actually?

• 2:48Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I was, I, I, at first I was like, no, but then I looked around and then I was like, maybe yes.

• 2:53Speaker 03

We didn't do that good on our own.

• 2:55Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, they're also having some issues, I would say.

• 2:58Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I mean, this is an interesting way to set up this episode because one of the things that we did do here in America is we did create the movie studio system, right?

• 3:07Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, okay. You're talking about Hollywood.

• 3:09Sean Fennessey?

  Which was an amazing thing.

• 3:10Speaker 03

  Sure.

• 3:11Sean Fennessey?

But what we're gonna talk about today is mostly the British movie studio system and British movies. There are two new British-ish movies that are out in theaters or streaming at home. The one streaming at home is called Bridget Jones Mad About the Boy. It's the fourth Bridget Jones movie. We're also gonna be talking about Paddington in Peru. This is the third Paddington movie. And we're gonna use this as an opportunity to build a canon. You know, last, two years ago, Chris and I created the 21st century sci-fi movie canon. We talked about the best science fiction movies that were made this century. This is the first one we're doing since then, I believe. This is an odd wrinkle. These have to be British movies, but they're British movies that American people like. Now, Bridget Jones and Paddington really fit well into this delineation.

• 3:56Sean Fennessey?

Americans really dig Bridget Jones. They also really dig Paddington. There's a lot of other kinds of movies like this.

• 4:02Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, so do they, when you say they have to be British movies?

• 4:06Sean Fennessey?

  Mm-hmm.

• 4:07Amanda Dobbins?

Let's drill down on that definition.

• 4:09Sean Fennessey?

British actors have to figure prominently.

• 4:11Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 4:12Sean Fennessey?

Or they have to be stories set in Britain. Or they have to be filmmakers who are British with a particular sensibility.

• 4:17Amanda Dobbins?

But it doesn't have to be like, British filmmaker only?

• 4:21Sean Fennessey?

No, no, I, I think there's some loose delineations around this. There can be an American's interpretation of Britain with British actors, for example.

• 4:28Amanda Dobbins?

  There is a lot of.

• 4:29Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 4:29Amanda Dobbins?

On this list. I'm sure that we're just gonna really endear ourselves to our British listeners.

• 4:34Sean Fennessey?

No, they're gonna be mad, but I don't care. You've been making them mad for months now in Vansplain.

• 4:38Speaker 03

Yeah, when I said it was Northern Ireland and regular Ireland, that didn't go over well. And I do apologize. I apologize. I'm doing my best.

• 4:45Sean Fennessey?

Okay, we're gonna be as informed as we can be today on this podcast. So we're pre-recording because it's wellness week next week at Spotify.

• 4:53Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 4:53Sean Fennessey?

And over the weekend, interestingly enough, the BAFTAs are occurring. I wish we could have been here, honestly, on Monday for the BAFTAs because that would have made this the perfect British episode. Any predictions for what's gonna go down at the BAFTAs? What's gonna win Best Picture?

• 5:04Speaker 03

  Better Man.

• 5:05Sean Fennessey?

  I don't believe it's nominated.

• 5:07Amanda Dobbins?

Let's see. They could go for Conclave.

• 5:09Sean Fennessey?

  Mm-hmm.

• 5:10Amanda Dobbins?

They could go for The Brutalist, I think.

• 5:13Sean Fennessey?

Well, what do you think is gonna happen? If you had to guess?

• 5:15Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I didn't... Conclave. Let's go with Conclave.

• 5:19Sean Fennessey?

Okay. Any guesses? You've been catching up on the Oscar movies.

• 5:21Speaker 03

Yeah, can I ask a question?

• 5:22Amanda Dobbins?

  Please.

• 5:22Speaker 03

Do you feel like the BAFTAs lean a certain way because of Britain's great care for art?

• 5:32Sean Fennessey?

  No.

• 5:32Speaker 03

  No, no.

• 5:33Sean Fennessey?

No. I think they're like any other awards body.

• 5:35Speaker 03

  Okay, so they just...

• 5:36Amanda Dobbins?

And in fact, they're like a little weird because in their response to... So along with Oscars So White, there is an ongoing BAFTA So White.

• 5:45Speaker 03

  Sure, colonialists.

• 5:46Amanda Dobbins?

You know, they have literally never nominated Denzel Washington for an award, so...

• 5:50Speaker 03

Crazy. Even when he was Shakespeare.

• 5:53Amanda Dobbins?

Exactly. So they made their own revisions to their system, but they're like very, very confusing. And there's like different jury systems and lots of things. So it's really hard to predict what's going on because they've got so many new rules.

• 6:11Speaker 03

  Right.

• 6:12Sean Fennessey?

And yet, it is still weirdly kind of predictive of the Oscars. At least it's very...

• 6:16Speaker 03

  Oh, really?

• 6:16Sean Fennessey?

At least it shows us how certain contingents are thinking.

• 6:19Speaker 03

  Got it.

• 6:19Sean Fennessey?

  So...

• 6:20Speaker 03

I could see Conclave for sure. I'm a Conclave stan and Pope movie stan.

• 6:24Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 6:24Speaker 03

I would be happy with The Brutalist.

• 6:26Sean Fennessey?

Uh, same. I think those are two good guesses, Conclave and The Brutalist. If Enora wins, we can kind of just go home.

• 6:33Speaker 03

  Yeah, right.

• 6:33Sean Fennessey?

And just be like, this is what's happening. Maybe we shouldn't even record.

• 6:36Amanda Dobbins?

Have a nice party, you know?

• 6:38Sean Fennessey?

  But not record it.

• 6:38Amanda Dobbins?

And be like, hey, Enora won. We like Enora.

• 6:41Sean Fennessey?

It would be great. It would be a nice thing, but it would say a lot. Enora, a very American film. I guess a very Russian film in some ways too, but the five nominees for Best Picture there are Complete Unknown, Enora, Conclave, Emilia Perez, and The Brutalist, probably the five leading contenders to win Best Picture. So we'll see what happens there.

• 6:55Speaker 03

I noticed they didn't nominate... nominate Wicked.

• 6:57Sean Fennessey?

  They did not nominate.

• 6:58Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 6:59Speaker 03

  It's interesting.

• 6:59Sean Fennessey?

  It is interesting.

• 7:00Amanda Dobbins?

Are you a wicked person? Okay, good.

• 7:02Speaker 03

I don't like musicals pretty much 90% of the time.

• 7:06Amanda Dobbins?

I don't like modern musicals, so I'm with you.

• 7:09Sean Fennessey?

There is another category, outstanding British film.

• 7:12Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 7:13Speaker 03

  What do we got?

• 7:14Sean Fennessey?

Well, Better Man Not Recognized there.

• 7:15Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 7:16Sean Fennessey?

Bird, Blitz, Conclave, Hard Truths, Gladiator 2, Kneecap, Lee, Love Lies Bleeding, The Outrun, and Wallace and Gromit Vengeance: Most Fell. Any faves there?

• 7:29Amanda Dobbins?

Um, what happened to our Hard Truths episode? You said that we would get to talk about it.

• 7:33Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I kind of want to wait until after the Oscars.

• 7:36Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, and when it's more.

• 7:37Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I also think it's gonna get a lot of attention on the alternative Oscars discussion. So I felt like it could be.

• 7:41Amanda Dobbins?

  Have you seen this film?

• 7:43Speaker 03

No, unfortunately, not to bring up my burnt down house again, but I had tickets the week of the fire and I was so excited.

• 7:50Sean Fennessey?

  You're a Mike Lee fan.

• 7:51Speaker 03

I love Mike Lee and, you know, it was not

• 7:55Amanda Dobbins?

  So.

• 7:55Speaker 03

the right timing for me, but I'm dying and now it's not in the theaters anymore. I'm so sad.

• 7:59Sean Fennessey?

  It is on VOD.

• 8:00Amanda Dobbins?

I do honestly think that there's like a little bit of, it's, it's good to have some distance between the fires and, cause I, I saw it the week after.

• 8:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 8:09Sean Fennessey?

  It's a very hard movie.

• 8:11Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, it's, it's incredible. It like knocked my socks off, but I also was like feeling very emotionally, not as emotionally

• 8:18Speaker 03

  It's not a contest.

• 8:20Amanda Dobbins?

It's not a contest. Um, and I was like, oh, okay, this is a lot. So, you know, when you're ready.

• 8:25Speaker 03

I'll VOD it, not with my parents, cause I don't think it's their, their bag of chips.

• 8:28Sean Fennessey?

It would be my pick of all these films for sure.

• 8:30Speaker 03

Okay. Love Lies Bleeding I haven't seen, but every time I hear it, I believe it's a line in a fuel song or something that goes.

• 8:38Amanda Dobbins?

  Also what I thought.

• 8:39Speaker 03

  Love lies bleeding.

• 8:41Sean Fennessey?

I think you have some Love Lies Bleeding energy. You might enjoy it.

• 8:44Speaker 03

Yeah, I'm happy to see it. I'll, I'll see anything where people have British accents. Do they have British accents?

• 8:49Sean Fennessey?

It is pretty good. It's a odd nominee for best British film, cause Rose Glass is a British filmmaker, but it's a movie set in like Arizona or Nevada.

• 8:57Amanda Dobbins?

  I thought it was Vegas.

• 8:58Sean Fennessey?

  Nevada, yeah.

• 8:59Speaker 03

  It's a wrestling movie?

• 9:00Sean Fennessey?

  Uh, no.

• 9:01Amanda Dobbins?

She, there is a bodybuilding element.

• 9:03Speaker 03

  Oh, a bodybuilding.

• 9:04Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, bodybuilding, noir, sex, um, body horror, basically.

• 9:10Speaker 03

And I won't watch with my parents, but.

• 9:12Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, set that one out. Can you watch Bridget Jones Mad About the Boy with your parents?

• 9:17Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes. Yeah. Did you?

• 9:18Speaker 03

I, well, I didn't because I watched. All four Bridget Jones movies yesterday.

• 9:23Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 9:23Speaker 03

And so there was a really tight, that's right. It was a great day, best day of my life, honestly.

• 9:27Amanda Dobbins?

  Not for the first time?

• 9:28Speaker 03

No, no. I had memory hold the third one, to be honest.

• 9:31Amanda Dobbins?

I had as well, so I rewatched it the night before and then I watched Mad About the Boy.

• 9:36Speaker 03

By the time it was time to watch, also my parents have the most, I'm living with my parents. They have the most complicated TV system of all time. Like, it's like, you have to like, turn the cable off, turn the sound of the cable off with your phone in order to bring the streaming apps on. And Peacock is not available on their smart TV.

• 9:57Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 9:58Speaker 03

And I couldn't figure out how to get it with them. And I was like, I'll just go watch it on the laptop in my bed. So that's what I did.

• 10:04Sean Fennessey?

Well, thanks for mentioning. This movie is streaming right now on Peacock despite the first two Bridget Jones movies being big box office successes, not just in England, but here in America.

• 10:12Speaker 03

It's misogynistic, I'm gonna say it.

• 10:13Sean Fennessey?

The third film didn't do as well. It was nine years ago.

• 10:17Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 10:17Sean Fennessey?

You could make the case that there's an audience to go see this movie in movie theaters, especially on Valentine's Day weekend?

• 10:23Speaker 03

Babe, I would have had a whole bottle of Pinot Grigio in one hand and a Kleenex in the other, ready to fucking party.

• 10:31Sean Fennessey?

  So you cried.

• 10:33Speaker 03

  Me that. Yes.

• 10:34Amanda Dobbins?

  I wept throughout this movie.

• 10:35Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 10:36Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 10:36Sean Fennessey?

You want to talk about what this movie is about and what it is?

• 10:38Amanda Dobbins?

I guess so. Were you, have you read the book?

• 10:42Speaker 03

  I've not read the.

• 10:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 10:43Speaker 03

Are there, are there more than?

• 10:44Amanda Dobbins?

So, yeah, so there are three, there are three Bridget Jones books.

• 10:47Speaker 03

But this is not handled in the book, or is it?

• 10:49Amanda Dobbins?

This is handled in the book. So the third film, Bridget Jones's Baby,

• 10:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 10:55Amanda Dobbins?

Kind of like went out of, out of literary canon, if you will.

• 10:58Sean Fennessey?

Kind of a quantum mania situation.

• 10:59Amanda Dobbins?

And so they like alternate ending it, ending it. And, but the book, Bridget Jones, Mad About the Boy, is a book that Helen Fielding, the author of all the books, wrote kind of based on her life.

• 11:12Speaker 03

She also, I couldn't tell if she was. Actually widowed, or just the father of her children passed away. Either way.

• 11:19Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure, yeah.

• 11:20Speaker 03

  It was.

• 11:21Amanda Dobbins?

So, so I had read the book. Uh, and, and candidly wept through that, so I knew a little bit of what was coming.

• 11:28Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 11:31Amanda Dobbins?

But, anyway, nine years, so in Bridget Jones 3. Bridget Jones 1, you know, she's.

• 11:37Sean Fennessey?

  The big choice.

• 11:38Amanda Dobbins?

  She's Britain's Carrie Bradshaw.

• 11:40Speaker 03

  Right.

• 11:40Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, and, and it's a light adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, and at the end she, uh, does end up with Mark Darcy. Spoiler alert, um, with a speech that literally was read at my wedding, so.

• 11:52Speaker 03

I'm dead. I wrote in my notes.

• 11:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 11:54Speaker 03

God-tier romantic comedy line is, I love, I like.

• 11:59Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, I like you just as you are, yeah. That, that whole little speech, like the, the jumper and the something, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 12:05Speaker 03

  Can I watch it?

• 12:06Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, no, I don't think we had videos. Do you know what Sean read?

• 12:08Sean Fennessey?

I filmed the whole thing on 70 millimeters, yeah.

• 12:10Amanda Dobbins?

Do you know what Sean read at our wedding?

• 12:11Speaker 03

  What?

• 12:11Amanda Dobbins?

Which is, takes on a different valence this year, but in 2016, you know what?

• 12:16Sean Fennessey?

Not my choice, for the record.

• 12:19Amanda Dobbins?

Listen, in 2000, sometime, I think we have to be honest, like, we're millennials, and in 2016, we cared about Drake.

• 12:25Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 12:25Amanda Dobbins?

And he read the Take Care outro, yes.

• 12:27Speaker 03

But I Take Care is my, the only Drake song I like.

• 12:29Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, of course.

• 12:30Sean Fennessey?

  It's the best album.

• 12:31Amanda Dobbins?

Um, it, it was beautiful. So, alright, so Bridget Jones picks Mark Darcy, uh. Bridget Jones 2, hijinks ensue, uh, and once again she, uh, picks Mark Darcy.

• 12:44Amanda Dobbins?

Number three, um, what is, what is Hugh Grant's character's name? Daniel Cleaver, thank you. Daniel Cleaver has like, quote unquote, died, uh, in the bush.

• 12:55Sean Fennessey?

  We're gonna get to that.

• 12:55Amanda Dobbins?

Which is funny, we'll get to it, but it opens with his funeral. And then.

• 13:00Speaker 03

It's a very, very funny scene, actually.

• 13:02Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, it's all, it has some moments.

• 13:04Speaker 03

  Thing.

• 13:05Sean Fennessey?

I can't even remember. I'm sure I watched it when it came out, but I have no recollection. One, I remember vividly.

• 13:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 13:10Sean Fennessey?

Two, a little bit. I definitely saw it and was paying attention. Three, I, I don't know if my memory hold it, but I, I couldn't remember any of the decisions that they made.

• 13:18Amanda Dobbins?

Um, so, it opens, well, it opens with her doing like the signature credit pajama dance to, um.

• 13:26Amanda Dobbins?

  Jump around, right?

• 13:27Speaker 03

Yes, yes, yes, yes. They do great music in these.

• 13:30Amanda Dobbins?

They do do great music and that is, I would like to talk about it.

• 13:33Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 13:35Amanda Dobbins?

So Daniel Cleaver dies and so then she goes to a music festival.

• 13:40Speaker 03

I believe it's supposed to be Gloucester Berry, but they don't say.

• 13:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 13:42Speaker 03

  Ed Sheeran is there.

• 13:44Sean Fennessey?

  Ed Sheeran, yes.

• 13:45Speaker 03

  He plays himself.

• 13:46Amanda Dobbins?

And she doesn't recognize him, which is funny.

• 13:48Speaker 03

She thinks he's a barista at her local Starbucks.

• 13:51Amanda Dobbins?

  And then.

• 13:52Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, Bridget.

• 13:52Amanda Dobbins?

She sleeps with Patrick Dempsey in their glamping yurt.

• 13:57Sean Fennessey?

  Yep.

• 13:58Amanda Dobbins?

And then she sleeps with, she runs into Mark Darcy at the, at a christening.

• 14:04Speaker 03

Yeah, of one of her, Jude, I believe, one of her.

• 14:07Amanda Dobbins?

And she sleeps with Mark Darcy.

• 14:10Amanda Dobbins?

And she uses dolphin condoms with both, so.

• 14:12Speaker 03

That are like 20 years old.

• 14:14Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, so she's pregnant and she doesn't know which one is the father. And so then it's, you know, a recreation of like, which one will she choose?

• 14:21Sean Fennessey?

  No recollection.

• 14:22Speaker 03

The scene is not bad. It's, I think the execution could have been better.

• 14:27Amanda Dobbins?

Respectfully to McDreamy, but it's just not.

• 14:30Speaker 03

What my mother said, I did watch that with my mom and she was like, so handsome, he should not speak.

• 14:34Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes, exactly.

• 14:36Sean Fennessey?

Wonder where you get it from.

• 14:37Speaker 03

We should bring her on the big picture.

• 14:39Amanda Dobbins?

But even that one, there's like, you know, like the one rom com moment where he's like, we never got a second date. So he comes and he brings out.

• 14:45Speaker 03

  I liked it.

• 14:46Amanda Dobbins?

It's, I mean, it's good writing, it's good rom com shit.

• 14:48Speaker 03

Brings a Swedish furniture for them to build.

• 14:50Amanda Dobbins?

Spoiler alert, at the end of Bridget Jones 3, she has the baby, it's a boy. She marries Mark Darcy finally.

• 14:58Speaker 03

  It's his.

• 14:59Amanda Dobbins?

  It's his.

• 15:00Speaker 03

We get Emma Thompson, which is incredible. She's the gynecologist.

• 15:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Which is very funny.

• 15:06Amanda Dobbins?

And then the very last shot of 3 is a newspaper of like, publisher found alive after one year. They do say at the funeral, they never found his body. And then the last shot of Bridget Jones 3 is like, he's still alive.

• 15:17Sean Fennessey?

  Daniel.

• 15:18Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, Daniel, okay. So Bridget Jones 4. I mean, it, did you know going in?

• 15:25Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 15:25Amanda Dobbins?

You did know? Okay, did you know going in, like the, what was?

• 15:29Sean Fennessey?

  The premise of the movie?

• 15:30Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 15:31Sean Fennessey?

Not really, no. Again, like, I'm really happy for you guys because you're having your like Star Wars mythology moment here, you know? Where you're like recapping all the, you know, the somehow this character returned thing.

• 15:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 15:43Speaker 03

You don't care. About women's issues.

• 15:45Sean Fennessey?

  No, I, I, I.

• 15:46Amanda Dobbins?

  I mean, I do.

• 15:47Sean Fennessey?

I'm excited for you to have this moment.

• 15:48Amanda Dobbins?

I do understand that it was like my cinematic universe.

• 15:51Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 15:51Amanda Dobbins?

This is a little bit like the British Sex and the City is like the best way that I can compare all of this.

• 15:56Speaker 03

Yeah, I think that, but, I mean, and it's interesting comparison because that they kind of use the exact same premise.

• 16:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 16:02Speaker 03

To start the Sex and the City that we have now.

• 16:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 16:06Speaker 03

Which with Mr. Big dying in the beginning.

• 16:08Amanda Dobbins?

  Right, yeah, so.

• 16:09Sean Fennessey?

In the movies at least, yeah. I, I can, I'll point out some differentiation that I find interesting that maybe is just cultural.

• 16:16Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I mean, I, I think it is cultural, but it like in the sense that held it, Bridget Jones started as like a newspaper column that Helen Fielding was writing. That then turned into a book that then turned into like a movie series.

• 16:28Speaker 03

She wanted to write a book about a woman right, running a refugee camp in the Sudan. And then they were like, we want you to write this. And she was like, okay, whatever. This is stupid.

• 16:37Sean Fennessey?

Best intentions, real brutalist vibes there. Yeah.

• 16:40Amanda Dobbins?

  Anyway, it worked out.

• 16:41Speaker 03

  My whole life.

• 16:41Amanda Dobbins?

Um, yeah, so Mark Darcy is dead, which they like, they kind of tease out that I thought the first like cold open 15 minutes of this movie were like fairly devastating. Because Colin Firth is like briefly in it as like a ghost thing and then.

• 17:00Sean Fennessey?

They give us a flashback early on and then he's kind of apparitional through the movie, right?

• 17:04Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, but even like when she meets him on the block.

• 17:08Speaker 03

  To walk to the.

• 17:09Amanda Dobbins?

To walk to the thing, he's apparitional.

• 17:10Sean Fennessey?

Oh, yeah, that was not a flashback. Got it.

• 17:13Speaker 03

It's like the anniversary of his death where she gets together, which was also so great because it was like bringing, they brought back so much stuff and then bringing back the, the interrogational dinner.

• 17:23Amanda Dobbins?

Yes, with the same actors 20 years later.

• 17:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 17:27Amanda Dobbins?

There are like a lot of, and I'm sorry to use this phrase, Easter eggs in this movie if you are like a, a Bridget Jones person, which.

• 17:34Sean Fennessey?

  Comes for us all, Amanda.

• 17:35Amanda Dobbins?

I, it comes for us all. And I did notice that, but primarily this is a movie about grief and, uh, raising children by yourself and I.

• 17:45Sean Fennessey?

  Very much about middle age.

• 17:46Amanda Dobbins?

  And I, yeah.

• 17:46Sean Fennessey?

In a way that is unusual in, in big movies like this.

• 17:49Amanda Dobbins?

And, and I do think like both romances are sort of, there are two romances, like. Every Bridget Jones movie, but they're not quite afterthoughts, but they aren't the center of the movie. Right, I agree.

• 17:59Sean Fennessey?

They don't feel as essential to the mechanics as the first three movies.

• 18:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 18:04Sean Fennessey?

So, you know, we haven't mentioned the stars. Renee Zellweger, of course, is, as always, Bridget Jones, a not British person, who's been playing this British character for quite some time.

• 18:12Amanda Dobbins?

However, I did, I did poll some British friends and they were like, her accent is perfect.

• 18:19Sean Fennessey?

  This has long been true.

• 18:20Amanda Dobbins?

  You would never know, yeah.

• 18:21Sean Fennessey?

This was true on the first film. She got high marks, right, for her ability to embody this character?

• 18:25Amanda Dobbins?

I think everyone was outraged when she was cast, an American was cast.

• 18:28Sean Fennessey?

So you like her. She's a good Bridget.

• 18:30Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, she's great. I was reminded, once again, watching this movie, like, a great comedic actress. She is very funny. Like, the scene in the elevator where she doesn't know how it works and is just doing, like, physical comedy. Yeah, like, funny.

• 18:44Sean Fennessey?

This is what she does best, in my opinion. This is like her super secret skill.

• 18:47Amanda Dobbins?

And they give her, like, some dance sequences. They give her... Also, she looks fabulous. Yes, she does.

• 18:53Sean Fennessey?

So this movie is the first of the four films to be directed by a man, which I thought was notable. It's directed by Michael Morris. You may recall him from the film To Leslie. Which very few people saw, but did garner an Academy Award nomination for Andrea Riseborough.

• 19:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay, great.

• 19:06Sean Fennessey?

  Quite surprisingly.

• 19:07Amanda Dobbins?

This was like the Colin campaign. No, I remember. Weneth and Edward Gordon were like, see this film, To Leslie. And me being like, I don't know who that is.

• 19:16Sean Fennessey?

I would not have guessed Bridget Jones 4 would be how he would follow this up. He is British, though?

• 19:21Amanda Dobbins?

I think so, when I Googled him, yeah.

• 19:24Sean Fennessey?

And in addition to Zellweger, you know, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth, apparitionally, are back.

• 19:29Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, yeah.

• 19:30Sean Fennessey?

  Emma Thompson is back.

• 19:31Amanda Dobbins?

  Hugh Grant is a life.

• 19:33Sean Fennessey?

He's back, he's back. I have a lot to say about him. He's wonderful. Chouettele Eschouff and Leo Woodall, you may recall from The White Lotus, season two.

• 19:40Amanda Dobbins?

  And Love Actually.

• 19:41Sean Fennessey?

And Love Actually. And Prime Target, the new show on Apple TV. Leo Woodall having a little bit of a moment.

• 19:47Sean Fennessey?

  Isla Fisher, weirdly, briefly.

• 19:49Amanda Dobbins?

Very briefly. It seems like they had a whole thing with her and they cut her. Yeah, but she was very funny. The one thing she did.

• 19:53Sean Fennessey?

And yeah, as you said, she is, uh, single.

• 19:56Amanda Dobbins?

  Hayley Atwell?

• 19:58Sean Fennessey?

No, that's Paddington in Peru you're thinking of, right?

• 20:00Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, yeah, you're right. Sorry. Okay, thank you. Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. We'll get there.

• 20:03Sean Fennessey?

Got your appealing British actresses confused.

• 20:05Amanda Dobbins?

Well, it is really random when Hayley Atwell shows up in Paddington and I'd like to talk about it.

• 20:09Sean Fennessey?

Bridget Jones is a TV producer?

• 20:12Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, she has been since the first film.

• 20:13Sean Fennessey?

That's her job? Okay, I couldn't remember that.

• 20:16Amanda Dobbins?

  She's no longer working.

• 20:17Speaker 03

She's a stay at home mom.

• 20:18Sean Fennessey?

She's a stay at home mom. She's got two children, 11 and 8, something like that. A boy and a girl.

• 20:24Speaker 03

Yeah. I don't even think eight. I feel like.

• 20:26Sean Fennessey?

  Seven?

• 20:27Amanda Dobbins?

  So, yeah, or something.

• 20:28Speaker 03

  Something very young where she.

• 20:30Sean Fennessey?

  I did text Amanda this.

• 20:31Speaker 03

  The dad.

• 20:32Sean Fennessey?

And I want to be gentle about how I characterize this, but I, you know, next month, Renee Zellweger will be 56.

• 20:37Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 20:38Sean Fennessey?

And so I don't, couldn't really figure out like the chronology of these stories.

• 20:41Speaker 03

They say it in number three. She's 43 when she has the first child.

• 20:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Which is possible these days.

• 20:46Sean Fennessey?

So she was 47 when she had the second child?

• 20:49Speaker 03

  It's.

• 20:49Sean Fennessey?

I'm not saying it doesn't happen. It definitely does happen.

• 20:53Speaker 03

But it's actually way more. It's way more common than you think. So the thing is that once you have one, it's quite easy to have later.

• 21:01Sean Fennessey?

Let's, let's ease up on quite easy.

• 21:04Speaker 03

I don't mean easy, but the, the thing about the first one is hard when you're older.

• 21:10Sean Fennessey?

  Right.

• 21:11Speaker 03

But once you've had one, they do say that age is less.

• 21:15Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, we got you. We got what you're saying.

• 21:18Speaker 03

47 is not dead, John. Jesus.

• 21:20Sean Fennessey?

I am 42 and I'm dead. So let me tell you.

• 21:23Speaker 03

  Is functioning beautifully.

• 21:24Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. I mean, that's the, that's the other tricky thing about, it's like, they do work until they don't, you know?

• 21:30Sean Fennessey?

  Absolutely.

• 21:31Speaker 03

They made a nice funny comment about it.

• 21:34Sean Fennessey?

There's a woman in her mid 50s raising young children by herself. That alone is like pure empathy, you know? I'm like, this has got to be fucking hard.

• 21:42Speaker 03

  Like LA.

• 21:43Sean Fennessey?

Uh, but there's usually like one who's 32 and one who's 56. You know, it's not usually two 56 year olds. And in this case, of course, she has lost her husband.

• 21:51Amanda Dobbins?

Pretty soon you're going to be the 56 year old. So.

• 21:54Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, but my daughter is going to be 17 when I'm 56. That's so different. 18.

• 21:59Speaker 03

When she drops, um, when she's dropping the kids off at school and she runs into Mr. Is it Wadding- Wantington?

• 22:07Amanda Dobbins?

  Wallaker?

• 22:07Speaker 03

  Wallaker, Mr. Wallaker.

• 22:09Sean Fennessey?

  Played by Chouette L. Edgerton.

• 22:10Speaker 03

Blowing the whistle a bunch and some, some kid comes up. It's like, why is your granny wearing pajamas? So they do kind of like.

• 22:17Sean Fennessey?

That was the big nod to it.

• 22:19Speaker 03

Yeah, which I thought, I thought was good.

• 22:20Sean Fennessey?

I appreciated that they acknowledged it.

• 22:22Speaker 03

This is normal. It's totally normal. They said something.

• 22:24Sean Fennessey?

They did. Um, I don't want to make too much of it. It just, it did jump out to me. I was like, I've been watching Renee Zellweger in movies for a very long time. Um, going back to like 1993. So anyhow.

• 22:33Speaker 03

And she was that exact age. I looked it up in, she was 43.

• 22:37Sean Fennessey?

  At that time.

• 22:37Speaker 03

At the time of three and then.

• 22:40Sean Fennessey?

Do you think they thought there would be a fourth when they made the third? Which was nine years ago now.

• 22:45Speaker 03

Maybe that's why they put the newspaper part.

• 22:48Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, I think that's a good point because they do keep it open. I mean, when I saw the third, I remember thinking, oh, interesting. They've like decided to take this like off book in like a happier direction because four is just like so devastating. And I was like, I was like, oh, I'm actually happy to see this character that I like get a slightly happier ending than than what we see. So I don't know.

• 23:14Sean Fennessey?

Did you, did you like the movie? Really like it? Love it?

• 23:17Speaker 03

  The fourth?

• 23:18Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 23:18Speaker 03

  I loved it.

• 23:19Amanda Dobbins?

I really liked it. I bet I, but I am like fully aware that I'm just like in the, in the Bridget Jones Matrix and was also crying a lot. So.

• 23:29Speaker 03

Is it as good as one? Of course not.

• 23:30Amanda Dobbins?

  No.

• 23:31Speaker 03

Is it nearly as good as two? I'd say it's on par with two.

• 23:38Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, it is just a different movie, right? I'm curious, what do you think? Not as a man, but as a movie watcher because.

• 23:44Speaker 03

  Film critic.

• 23:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 23:46Sean Fennessey?

Um, I thought it was solid. It's very long.

• 23:51Speaker 03

  It's very long.

• 23:51Amanda Dobbins?

  It is long.

• 23:52Sean Fennessey?

Very long for a movie like this. And I tend to think a movie like this is a really good one hour and forty three minute movie. And it felt a bit extended in its set pieces. You know, there's a long camping sequence where I was like, we are really.

• 24:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 24:06Sean Fennessey?

Making us wait for the payoff.

• 24:08Amanda Dobbins?

That's how they fall in love.

• 24:09Sean Fennessey?

But it's a rom com. I mean, we know where we're going here.

• 24:11Amanda Dobbins?

It's more that like, she would tell Edgier four, who is the, like the new Mr. Darcy character.

• 24:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:18Amanda Dobbins?

Doesn't have anything to do for the first ninety minutes.

• 24:21Speaker 03

  It's true. Yeah.

• 24:22Sean Fennessey?

They're kind of like hoping to trick you into thinking he's not the romantic lead, but it's very obvious the first time he comes across the screen. Leo Woodall, um.

• 24:30Speaker 03

  I thought he was great.

• 24:31Sean Fennessey?

  He's very handsome.

• 24:32Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 24:32Sean Fennessey?

And they gave him ample opportunity to show it off.

• 24:35Amanda Dobbins?

Not really seen him before because I didn't do one day. Oh, no, I didn't watch White Lovers. I am thinking about doing the third season.

• 24:41Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Um.

• 24:42Sean Fennessey?

  Season two is really good.

• 24:44Speaker 03

It's really good. And he's great.

• 24:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay, well.

• 24:46Sean Fennessey?

  I really liked season two.

• 24:47Speaker 03

These gays are trying to kill me.

• 24:48Sean Fennessey?

And he's, he is hilarious in season two. His character particularly is very good.

• 24:52Amanda Dobbins?

Anyway, I mean, he has the charisma when he shows up in the, the tree climbing. I was like, oh, I get this. Okay.

• 24:58Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. He's, is he like, um.

• 25:00Amanda Dobbins?

  He's not like a.

• 25:01Sean Fennessey?

Fifty five year old mom's dream man? That's kind of what the movie is pitching.

• 25:04Speaker 03

For me, he looks a bit. Young even for a forty two year old.

• 25:07Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, I thought so as well, but also like he showed up on screen and I was like, I get it. As opposed to the um, the idea of you guy, what's his name Nicholas Gazzle team?

• 25:17Sean Fennessey?

  Gazzle.

• 25:18Amanda Dobbins?

Where I was just like, no.

• 25:18Sean Fennessey?

  Gazzleton.

• 25:19Speaker 03

Oh, that's the Anne Hathaway movie. I didn't see that.

• 25:21Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, but it's, I mean, you either have it or you don't.

• 25:24Sean Fennessey?

  Mm hmm.

• 25:25Amanda Dobbins?

  And he has it.

• 25:26Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 25:26Speaker 03

And his acting, I thought the part where he came back after ghosting.

• 25:31Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 25:31Speaker 03

He was, he did a good, like that acting was pretty good. Like you believed it. He did a great job. I did, I have to say, I don't want to hear what you guys have to think. The Chiwetel Ejifor, is that how you say it? I, it did feel like they didn't develop that enough. Like that was the one part where I was like, I'm not buying that you're in love. I, it didn't.

• 25:53Sean Fennessey?

That's sort of what I'm saying.

• 25:54Speaker 03

  I know, I agree.

• 25:55Sean Fennessey?

Making us sit in this relationship and it's not flowering.

• 25:57Speaker 03

Mr. Darcy and I get that he like connected with the sun and that's blossomed in her heart.

• 26:03Amanda Dobbins?

  I forgot about the scene.

• 26:04Sean Fennessey?

That's by far the best scene.

• 26:05Amanda Dobbins?

  I like.

• 26:06Sean Fennessey?

  The performance you're talking about?

• 26:07Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, when the kid is, I mean.

• 26:09Sean Fennessey?

That was, I was, I was.

• 26:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Holy cow.

• 26:11Speaker 03

So echoes of love actually, which.

• 26:13Sean Fennessey?

It was, it was. Which seemed like a very knowing nod to that thing.

• 26:17Speaker 03

He was Peter in Love Actually.

• 26:18Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, but I mean, but singing for the dad, I mean, I can't, I was like weeping.

• 26:22Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, that part is very good.

• 26:23Amanda Dobbins?

There's too much in this movie and it, and I was like.

• 26:26Sean Fennessey?

It's a little overstuffed. This is kind of a classic like fourth.

• 26:28Amanda Dobbins?

Problem where I was like, okay, so you're trying to get like Shazza and Jude and Tom, like the friends in, who are like barely in three because.

• 26:36Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 26:36Amanda Dobbins?

They're her thirties friends, but like.

• 26:38Speaker 03

Oh no, it's two that's Broke Down Palace, where J- Jones in the Broke Down Palace.

• 26:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 26:43Sean Fennessey?

You've got this extended world and you've got like um, actresses and actors like, you know, Jim Broadbent and Shirley Henderson.

• 26:49Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, that was so sad when the Jim Broadbent died.

• 26:51Sean Fennessey?

I liked that scene a lot. That was a good scene.

• 26:53Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, there was really, really good scenes.

• 26:54Speaker 03

That was another one of those. God tier lions, like, promise me you'll live.

• 26:58Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 26:58Sean Fennessey?

It's the same thing as in all the boy IP movies where they cast overqualified actors and you get one scene where you're like, holy shit, Jeremy Irons is in this, you know?

• 27:07Speaker 03

Yeah, he was the dad the whole time.

• 27:09Sean Fennessey?

Uh, no, no, I know. I think, I'm just saying, like, throughout this whole series, by having the Jim Broadbent and the Shirley Hendersons, you're like, okay, thi- this is always gonna be never less than solid, you know?

• 27:19Amanda Dobbins?

And so you want all of them in the movie.

• 27:22Sean Fennessey?

Right, and that's what they're trying to do.

• 27:23Amanda Dobbins?

Right, that's what they're trying to do, but it is like, it's too much. And so you don't get as much time on the new characters and you don't get as much time on, you know, and then they're like trying to bring in the, the perfect mom who I, like, I thought that was a funny character.

• 27:35Speaker 03

Persian representation, we love to see it.

• 27:37Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 27:37Amanda Dobbins?

And, uh, the, like, the perfect nanny seemed like another slightly under, like, a thing where they filmed a lot more and cut it out.

• 27:45Sean Fennessey?

  Nico Parker.

• 27:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 27:46Speaker 03

  Chloe.

• 27:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 27:47Sean Fennessey?

Um, yeah, I mean, is there like a four hour cut of this film? It kind of feels like it.

• 27:51Speaker 03

Maybe it was supposed to be a TV show. I kept thinking that it would have been a great series.

• 27:55Sean Fennessey?

It opened in cinemas in England, so I, you know, the fact that it wasn't a streaming movie there is notable, but it, you know, it has that feel of like the, is it extensions of early aughts?

• 28:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 28:06Sean Fennessey?

Shows become, or films become shows, so you could be on to something.

• 28:10Speaker 03

Can I ask one more question?

• 28:11Amanda Dobbins?

You can ask as many questions as you'd like.

• 28:13Speaker 03

I love it here, more Mollins. Um, well, crossed my mind, and again, the feminism sometimes does be reentering my body.

• 28:20Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 28:21Speaker 03

Where I was like, I know it's not a Bridget Jones thing to do, but I was like, it would have been so interesting to have it end with no love match. Like, to, to be like-

• 28:38Sean Fennessey?

  I don't need this.

• 28:39Speaker 03

I don't need, or like, which is again, not to Galaxy Brand, then it's like, ugh, it's too feminist, like, oh, I'm, women hear me roar, I don't need anyone, but like-

• 28:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Right, right, right.

• 28:47Speaker 03

I was trying to think of how they, or even like- Honestly, for her to end up with Leo Woodall would have been really interesting. Cause he did, they, he did clearly, he wasn't like the Daniel Cleaver character where it was so clear that he was just like a womanizing shitbag and like, she shouldn't end up with him. Like, he actually seemed like a viable.

• 29:06Sean Fennessey?

He's just like a ghosty Gen Z kid.

• 29:08Speaker 03

Yeah. But he, but he came back and he was like, I'm ready for it. I want to be a stepdad and like, you know, and I was like.

• 29:12Amanda Dobbins?

You can't do that. You know.

• 29:14Speaker 03

Why are you trouncing on my dreams?

• 29:16Amanda Dobbins?

You can't. I'd love that for you.

• 29:18Speaker 03

I plan to. Aaron Taylor Johnson, and if any Aaron Taylor Johnsons are watching, I'm here.

• 29:25Speaker 03

  Also an artist.

• 29:25Amanda Dobbins?

  I think they.

• 29:27Speaker 03

  That's right.

• 29:28Amanda Dobbins?

Like they did that whole last scene where it's like, it's about, you know, everyone, it's about the community and like everyone's in the kitchen. It's a very sweet New Year's party.

• 29:37Speaker 03

I did love the Italian womanizing 16 year old son. That was great.

• 29:40Amanda Dobbins?

That was really, really funny. Enzo and, and so like, Chute, Chuteal Edgifor is like there and you signaled that he's the partner or whatever, but it's like not emphasis.

• 29:50Speaker 03

Odd line sign on the piano.

• 29:52Amanda Dobbins?

It's not like three and two and like the rest end, but just like Mark Darcy, Mark Darcy, Mark Darcy, you know? And this is more like, look at my beautiful life and it's going to be okay. But I mean, I agree with you.

• 30:05Speaker 03

It's not a criticism per se.

• 30:08Amanda Dobbins?

  In the snow.

• 30:09Speaker 03

Yeah, it was, it was, they were like, what would, how, what kind of Mark Darcy would he be?

• 30:13Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 30:13Speaker 03

  And his, he's a scientist.

• 30:15Amanda Dobbins?

The first, you know, Mark Darcy.

• 30:17Speaker 03

Newton's law of, of third law or whatever.

• 30:20Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 30:22Sean Fennessey?

I feel that we're not giving enough attention to Hugh Grant, who's on one of the great unbroken streaks of success in movies in the last 10 years. He's very, very funny in this movie.

• 30:30Speaker 03

I'm sorry, but he's never shown up once for me in a film that I wasn't like, absolutely yes, standing ovation.

• 30:36Amanda Dobbins?

  Amen.

• 30:37Sean Fennessey?

  He's a, he's a great movie star.

• 30:38Speaker 03

He's such a, he's so charming. And you know Helen Fielding, I did listen, did a little research as I do. She said that he writes a lot of his own lines.

• 30:46Sean Fennessey?

  You can kind of tell.

• 30:48Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 30:48Sean Fennessey?

There's a, it feels like his press tour in the movie.

• 30:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 30:52Sean Fennessey?

Um, not in a bad way. It's a really interesting thing though, because it is, this, this has always been true of this character as I remember it, but it is the. The inverse of the persona. I mean, it is him almost like rejecting the bumbling adorable Brit thing that he trademarked, you know?

• 31:07Amanda Dobbins?

And when he did it in the original Bridget Jones Diary in 2001, it's like right after Notting Hill.

• 31:14Sean Fennessey?

  Right.

• 31:15Amanda Dobbins?

And like he's doing it with Richard Curtis, who is, it's almost like, okay, finally we get to be. He, he's always talked about it, like I get to be closer to who I actually am.

• 31:27Speaker 03

Very few men have ever been more gorgeous and attractive than Hugh Grant in Bridget Jones' one. Or honestly, in Notting Hill or in Four Weddings and a Funeral.

• 31:35Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 31:36Speaker 03

  Or I could, you know.

• 31:37Amanda Dobbins?

  It's really, really powerful.

• 31:38Speaker 03

  Truly.

• 31:38Amanda Dobbins?

But he also is, looks fantastic.

• 31:41Speaker 03

  He looks amazing.

• 31:42Amanda Dobbins?

I just want to say, across the board, everyone over the age of 50. Looks amazing in this movie, including Emma Thompson.

• 31:49Speaker 03

  Emma Thompson looks gorgeous.

• 31:50Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, who's got like the Miranda Priestly hair at this point.

• 31:53Sean Fennessey?

They have hair and makeup in these films, you know?

• 31:54Speaker 03

  No, no, no.

• 31:55Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, but like, they don't always get it right, as you never notice.

• 31:59Speaker 03

Allow me to point something out.

• 32:00Sean Fennessey?

These people are rich movie stars who are beautiful and that's why they're in the business.

• 32:04Speaker 03

The thing about, okay, the thing about A. Renee Zellweger is that she looks her age, but phenomenal. Which is not the same as looking, and also, let me say with them that the British canon, which I believe so firmly and strongly in. They, they still keep their teeth.

• 32:23Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 32:24Speaker 03

American movie stars, American movie stars, please relax on the veneers. I can't take it anymore. I can't watch another film.

• 32:30Amanda Dobbins?

I needed to hear this because I was thinking the other day about maybe I would do some, some teeth. I know, I can't. First of all, first of all.

• 32:38Speaker 03

Hugh Grant has his regular messed up teeth.

• 32:40Sean Fennessey?

  Insidious.

• 32:40Amanda Dobbins?

No, it is. Of course it is. No, it's actually that I was just like watching Instagram and someone was like, here's how they put it on your.

• 32:47Speaker 03

  Your teeth are perfect.

• 32:48Amanda Dobbins?

  They aren't, but thank you.

• 32:50Speaker 03

I have a bit of a British situation on the bottom and you know what? That's fine.

• 32:53Amanda Dobbins?

I have sort of like a Ben Affleck, like I, they're just like a little small, you know? And so Ben Affleck got that, that money.

• 32:59Speaker 03

Go back and watch like, what is my favorite after hours?

• 33:02Sean Fennessey?

  The Martin Scorsese movie?

• 33:03Speaker 03

Yeah. The teeth are teething in that movie.

• 33:05Amanda Dobbins?

  I listen.

• 33:07Speaker 03

And you, Nicolas Cage, what happened? He was so wonderful. And then what he made, it was so good.

• 33:12Amanda Dobbins?

Kirsten Dunst has kept her teeth and that's really important.

• 33:15Speaker 03

  It's just so charming.

• 33:16Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I think people should do what they want to do, honestly.

• 33:18Amanda Dobbins?

  Thank you.

• 33:19Sean Fennessey?

They should do what they want to do. If you want to get veneers, honestly, I'll make a point of it every episode forever, but you should do it.

• 33:25Speaker 03

Both my parents have them, so every day in my house, I'm like, okay, we're at the TV set.

• 33:29Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay, yeah.

• 33:30Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 33:31Amanda Dobbins?

  There is a good.

• 33:31Speaker 03

They look great, my parents, if you're watching.

• 33:33Amanda Dobbins?

So another subplot in this movie, because there are, there are too many, there are like forty five thousand, but one of them is the the TV producer, the TV show where Bridget goes back to work with her friend. Yeah. And they're doing like the fourth hour of the Today Show, but in the UK. And they talk about, like, how the HD camera is like the worst invention for TV presenters of all time, which is very true. We talked about it recently on an episode. Jack and I were just talking about, like, filters. Shout out, Jack, for all the work that you're gonna do.

• 34:07Speaker 03

  Thank you so much, Jack.

• 34:07Amanda Dobbins?

Let Jack know if you guys know about filters. Or let me know, you know, because we're all learning together.

• 34:13Speaker 03

  Out here.

• 34:13Amanda Dobbins?

We're doing our best. And then the lip thing was funny. That was, it was funny.

• 34:17Speaker 03

Especially because it was like she got ghosted, let's help you out. The implication was like, if you're just hotter, you wouldn't get ghosted.

• 34:24Sean Fennessey?

Interesting double feature potential here with Baby Girl, I feel.

• 34:27Speaker 03

I thought about Baby Girl while I was watching.

• 34:31Amanda Dobbins?

  Are you pro or anti?

• 34:32Speaker 03

I'm like total neutral on Baby Girl. I thought it was like an inch.

• 34:36Amanda Dobbins?

Did you watch Harris Dickinson's Criterion?

• 34:38Speaker 03

Yes, and he is so hot.

• 34:39Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, it's like on real.

• 34:41Sean Fennessey?

It's good we can all have a little bit.

• 34:43Amanda Dobbins?

  It's like really powerful.

• 34:44Speaker 03

Harris Dickinson, are you watching? I'm here.

• 34:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Do you feel threatened, though?

• 34:47Sean Fennessey?

Threatened by what? Oh, could a man so beautiful also be such a cynical dork?

• 34:51Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, well, it's just kind of like.

• 34:52Sean Fennessey?

It is like, you're on my corner, handsome guy.

• 34:54Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, exactly. It's like, it's like, none of the rest of you can pull that off, you know?

• 34:57Sean Fennessey?

No, I mean, for me, it's just like ball knower salute. Like, I gotta say. This man is recommending obscure Filipino cinema to hot women around the world. This is super cool.

• 35:07Speaker 03

He really sealed the deal for me on that one.

• 35:09Sean Fennessey?

I mean, we need more men like him, to be honest with you.

• 35:12Speaker 03

  Couldn't agree more.

• 35:15Sean Fennessey?

I also, I was just reading, I didn't realize that Baby Girl is a big hit in England as well. And in Europe, it's doing very well financially. Is it okay in the US?

• 35:24Speaker 03

  Europeans are more sexually free.

• 35:27Amanda Dobbins?

  And pro age gap relationships.

• 35:29Sean Fennessey?

I do think that is a huge factor is it just feels like a very French movie in a lot of ways.

• 35:34Amanda Dobbins?

And like a French understanding of or a European understanding of America. And even like this slightly simplistic girl boss, whatever. And then let's just like add a lot of sex. Yeah. Amen.

• 37:45Sean Fennessey?

Let's pivot to something more childlike.

• 37:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 37:48Sean Fennessey?

  Paddington in Peru.

• 37:49Amanda Dobbins?

  We have marmalade sandwiches.

• 37:50Sean Fennessey?

  By you or by you?

• 37:52Amanda Dobbins?

  By you. By you.

• 37:53Sean Fennessey?

Very kind of you. Thank you.

• 37:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Of course.

• 37:54Sean Fennessey?

I don't know that I've ever had just a straight up marmalade sandwich.

• 37:57Amanda Dobbins?

Me either. I was just trying to be true to this, to the, I looked it up. I don't know if I've ever had marmalade.

• 38:02Sean Fennessey?

Oh, I've definitely had marmalade. It's great.

• 38:04Amanda Dobbins?

It's brown bread, specifically whole wheat bread. So I, that's what I got. I looked it up.

• 38:08Sean Fennessey?

  That is what Paddington likes.

• 38:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 38:10Sean Fennessey?

Paddington, of course, is a bear.

• 38:12Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 38:13Sean Fennessey?

He's a bear from, as you would read in the story, darkest Peru.

• 38:16Amanda Dobbins?

Is that a real place? Did you look it up?

• 38:18Sean Fennessey?

I believe it's just a reference to Peru, but more like in, within Peru, there is undiscovered country.

• 38:24Amanda Dobbins?

It does feel lightly racist, but I'm gonna let it go.

• 38:28Sean Fennessey?

There is definitely some colonialist vibes to the story, you know, and they're, you know, Paddington is like the lost immigrant is definitely a sub-theme in the original story.

• 38:37Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 38:38Sean Fennessey?

Learning to assimilate in the Brown family.

• 38:41Amanda Dobbins?

We reread the original story last night and they don't.

• 38:44Sean Fennessey?

I read it like every day.

• 38:45Amanda Dobbins?

They don't really get into the politics of it all.

• 38:49Sean Fennessey?

But it has like, it's like they found him at the train station and he's orphaned and, you know, like it's kind of a classical stand-in for.

• 38:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 38:58Sean Fennessey?

A boy from another country, basically.

• 39:00Amanda Dobbins?

In the original movie, though, they try to, they draw the parallels to World War II. And they're like, they sent the tag and so they, you know, sent kids away and were like, please take care of this kid. So that's not in the book? Makes me, no, that's not in the book. That was added.

• 39:14Sean Fennessey?

  The book is very slim.

• 39:15Amanda Dobbins?

Got it. It actually has a lot of words, but.

• 39:18Sean Fennessey?

Yes, I read it all the time.

• 39:19Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, it's like, it is one of the, when the child requests, original Paddington, it's like, are you gonna do the edited version? Or are you putting away fifteen?

• 39:26Sean Fennessey?

I can't do the edited version anymore because my daughter knows every word to every story.

• 39:30Amanda Dobbins?

  No, Knox says two now.

• 39:32Sean Fennessey?

  I will do tonal shifting.

• 39:34Amanda Dobbins?

Me too, but no British accent.

• 39:35Sean Fennessey?

More excited if it's a female character, a different register.

• 39:38Amanda Dobbins?

Excuse me. That's, wow. Sean's like, I go. More shrill.

• 39:42Sean Fennessey?

I'm not doing Misses Doubtfire. Yeah, just more annoying is really what I go. No, just like.

• 39:47Amanda Dobbins?

Don't give these YouTube commenters anymore.

• 39:49Sean Fennessey?

  You know, the.

• 39:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, sure.

• 39:51Sean Fennessey?

Do I go like that? No, I don't do that. Um, Paddington, third Paddington.

• 39:54Amanda Dobbins?

I do actually do that for the dads. The dads talk like this.

• 39:57Sean Fennessey?

  Yes, there you go.

• 39:59Amanda Dobbins?

And then like, and you'll see sighs, like, like eyes light up. I don't know whether like he's a budding misogynist or whether it just gets his attention. We're just like, hey. Gender essentialist like all of us.

• 40:07Sean Fennessey?

Kids love performance and they love Paddington. This is the third Paddington movie. It's directed by Dougal Wilson, the first Paddington movie not directed by Paul King, who really made his name as a filmmaker on the first two Paddington films. I would say especially Paddington two, which is one of the most beloved movies of the 21st century.

• 40:24Amanda Dobbins?

One of the best films of all time.

• 40:26Sean Fennessey?

Many people are saying that. I don't know if I'm quite at that level, but I do like it quite a bit.

• 40:30Amanda Dobbins?

  It's wonderful.

• 40:31Sean Fennessey?

Okay. This movie had a lot to live up to because of the reputation of the first two Paddington films.

• 40:38Sean Fennessey?

Paul King still did work on the story.

• 40:40Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 40:40Sean Fennessey?

Before moving on to Wonka, which is a movie that I don't like, but Amanda does.

• 40:45Amanda Dobbins?

Okay. Oh, you like it? I cried. Is it on a musical? It is, it's more musical so than even these movies. So you might not like it.

• 40:54Sean Fennessey?

Hugh Bonneville's back. Julie Walters is back. Jim Broadbent is back. Olivia Colman is here.

• 41:01Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 41:01Sean Fennessey?

  Antonio Banderas is here.

• 41:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 41:03Sean Fennessey?

And of course, Ben Whishaw has returned as the voice of Paddington.

• 41:05Amanda Dobbins?

But who's not back? Yeah. That I was so upset and angry. So I didn't know this and I sat down.

• 41:11Sean Fennessey?

I didn't know it either. You didn't know it either, right?

• 41:13Amanda Dobbins?

I was like, excuse me. And I, and I also had to like go get popcorn for Knox because I, I took Knox to his second theater experience of all time to see this movie. And I bribed him with popcorn to sit through all of it. So I was like, did I miss, is this like Mrs. Brown's sister? You know, like what's going on? And they just like hard recast Sally Hawkins. As Sean put it, they Aunt Viv'd it.

• 41:35Sean Fennessey?

Yes, this is, this is a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air situation where one day you turned on the Fresh Prince and Aunt Viv was just played by a completely different actress. And they did kind of acknowledge it.

• 41:44Amanda Dobbins?

They winked, this was my biggest criticism. I'm like, how easy would it have been to write a funny little line when Paddington is?

• 41:50Speaker 03

Like, this is Brown. Did you cut your hair? You look different. That alone might have mollified me, but I was like, I was angry.

• 41:58Sean Fennessey?

  I was confused.

• 41:59Amanda Dobbins?

I know the difference between Sally Hawkins and Emily Mortimer, two great actresses.

• 42:04Sean Fennessey?

Well, the thing is, Emily Mortimer is great.

• 42:05Speaker 03

  We love her.

• 42:06Sean Fennessey?

So it's kind of weird because you're like, I know who that is. This isn't just a random British lady who kind of looks like Sally Hawkins. Like, they just.

• 42:12Speaker 03

She doesn't look like Sally Hawkins is the other thing.

• 42:15Sean Fennessey?

She, no, she, so it's, I guess it's more noticeable.

• 42:17Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, they have dark hair.

• 42:18Speaker 03

Yeah, but blue eyes, doesn't she?

• 42:20Amanda Dobbins?

I'm with you. I was just kind of like, who's doing it?

• 42:23Sean Fennessey?

  It's a bit strange.

• 42:24Amanda Dobbins?

It's like the one thing that insults the audience's intelligence.

• 42:27Sean Fennessey?

This is going around, you know, with Harrison Ford replacing William Hurt and Mark Ruffalo replacing Edward Norton in Captain America IV.

• 42:34Speaker 03

Did you get any Tinseltown intel from the biz about why Sally Hawkins didn't do it?

• 42:39Sean Fennessey?

Been pounding the pavement, been knocking on doors, can't get any word on this. Where is Sally Hawkins and why is she not available? I'm sure somebody out there knows why. Anyhow, this third movie, um, an adventure film.

• 42:49Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 42:50Sean Fennessey?

Paddington headed back to old Peru to find out what's going on with his aunt.

• 42:54Amanda Dobbins?

  With Aunt Lucy.

• 42:55Sean Fennessey?

Aunt Lucy, something's happened to her, she's disappeared. She's contacted him, the whole Brown family needs to go on adventure. They're stuck in the malaise of middle age for the parents and adolescence for the kids. Mix it up, be fearless. Hugh Bonneville, he's, I don't know, he's doing something in the corporate world.

• 43:10Amanda Dobbins?

And that's why Haley Atwell's there.

• 43:12Sean Fennessey?

Haley Atwell plays his boss. Um, she's an American girl boss.

• 43:16Speaker 03

  Yeah, she comes in.

• 43:16Sean Fennessey?

Kind of a baby girl situation also for her.

• 43:19Speaker 03

  No sexual.

• 43:19Amanda Dobbins?

I totally missed that scene. So at the end, when she's just like in the boardroom, I was like, what is going on with my British wife?

• 43:26Speaker 03

She comes in, she's like, we must embrace risk.

• 43:29Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 43:29Speaker 03

  That's the big thing.

• 43:30Sean Fennessey?

Which I would say, plot wise, not coherent, but that's okay. Um, the family decides to go to Peru together, they get into some adventures.

• 43:37Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 43:37Sean Fennessey?

Some shit goes down. I also saw this movie with my kid. She loved it, but was absolutely terrified for about 18 minutes in the third act.

• 43:45Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, what part was terrifying for her?

• 43:47Sean Fennessey?

Just as soon as it was like storming and they were on the boat and the boat was getting destroyed.

• 43:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, okay.

• 43:51Sean Fennessey?

That was like, she was like, no, she was like, get me out of here.

• 43:54Amanda Dobbins?

I will say this morning when I asked Knox, because, you know, we're in a phase of life where you can't like ask direct questions and like get answers. So after the movie, I was like, did you like it?

• 44:06Sean Fennessey?

For the rest of your life, yeah.

• 44:06Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, and he was like, yeah, sure, um. So, but this morning I was like, hey, do you remember what movie we saw? And he said Paddington and Peru. And he said, there was yellow, there was yellow in the boat? And I was like, oh, do you mean the life jackets? He said, yes, they were yellow in the boat. So I guess that also did stay with him.

• 44:25Sean Fennessey?

It's really funny. The life jackets also resonated in our home because Alice keeps doing this. Represent life jackets, which I thought was pretty creative. What did you think of Paddington and Peru, Yasi?

• 44:33Speaker 03

Well, much like Bridget Jones, I will watch 27 more Paddington. Yeah. Of varying levels of being good and I will enjoy all of them. I had a great time. Once I got over the Mrs. Brownness of it all. Um, I thought it was an anti-capitalist, pro-immigration tome.

• 44:49Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 44:50Speaker 03

Which is a cool thing to do, you know, to indoctrinate the children. El Dorado, it's oranges.

• 44:55Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 44:56Speaker 03

  It's not gold, babe.

• 44:57Sean Fennessey?

  I enjoyed that as well.

• 44:57Amanda Dobbins?

It was, that is lovely. I, I love these movies.

• 45:00Speaker 03

I do too. I think Antonio Banderas is also having, to a lesser extent, a Hugh Grant year.

• 45:05Sean Fennessey?

He is doing very well, of course. He recurs in Baby Girl.

• 45:08Speaker 03

One of the better parts for me of Baby Girl.

• 45:10Sean Fennessey?

There's something kind of weird in this where he's playing a somewhat similar character in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Where he's also a man with a boat.

• 45:18Amanda Dobbins?

I had, I had like literally, that doesn't exist.

• 45:21Sean Fennessey?

  Kind of odd.

• 45:22Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I didn't remember that. So, also, this movie, these movies do, like, they're, they love other movies.

• 45:30Speaker 03

  Yeah, they're references.

• 45:31Amanda Dobbins?

And they do homage and they reference. So, I mean, he even does like a little Zorro thing at one point, right?

• 45:35Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, he does, yeah.

• 45:36Speaker 03

Respectfully of Antonio Banderas, I mean, you know.

• 45:38Sean Fennessey?

I mean, he's an actor I've always loved, a former guest of this show.

• 45:41Speaker 03

We love, I love, he still looks gorgeous.

• 45:44Sean Fennessey?

And he brings an energy that is fun to the movie, but I think actually kind of scared Alice a little bit because the like multiple versions of Banderas was a little intense.

• 45:51Speaker 03

It's pretty, yeah, it was pretty sinister. Also, I did get upset about his name. What was his name in the movie?

• 45:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Cabot? Hugo?

• 45:59Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, but it was actually Caballo, right?

• 46:01Speaker 03

I was like, this man is Peruvian, his last name is Cabot?

• 46:03Amanda Dobbins?

  I mean, I did also.

• 46:04Speaker 03

And it was like Martin Cabot or something.

• 46:06Amanda Dobbins?

No, it was like Mr. Hunter, Mr. Something, yeah.

• 46:08Sean Fennessey?

I think there had been like maybe a Spanish conquistador in his family, but then also an American prospector. I think they were trying to show that, you know, the immigration throughout the family lineage.

• 46:18Amanda Dobbins?

  Great boat.

• 46:19Speaker 03

  Great boat.

• 46:20Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, the production design in these movies is wonderful.

• 46:24Speaker 03

Olivia Colman was phenomenal. I thought she's so enjoyable.

• 46:27Amanda Dobbins?

  I laughed every single time.

• 46:29Sean Fennessey?

She plays a nun with some suspicious intentions.

• 46:32Speaker 03

  Her face acting?

• 46:33Amanda Dobbins?

Locked in to the frequency of the walking movies. It's really, really funny.

• 46:37Sean Fennessey?

  Agreed.

• 46:39Amanda Dobbins?

Also, like the, the Sound of Music, a whole, like montage song, like very funny.

• 46:45Speaker 03

So whatever they're doing with however they make that Paddington bear CGI or whatever, the minute he is lightly upset about something, I start crying. It is just the most moving.

• 46:59Amanda Dobbins?

  I agree.

• 47:00Speaker 03

I love it. They, they're knocking it out of the park with my Paddington CGI.

• 47:04Sean Fennessey?

Where do you, is this the third best of the Paddington movies?

• 47:10Speaker 03

  So.

• 47:11Sean Fennessey?

It's kind of, it's pretty different because of its locale.

• 47:14Speaker 03

Well, it's, it's not, it doesn't have the whimsy.

• 47:18Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 47:19Speaker 03

Of the, of the like locations of the first two, cause like the Brown's apartment has all that like.

• 47:26Amanda Dobbins?

  It's so wonderful.

• 47:26Speaker 03

Cuteness and whimsy and London in general is like such a portrayed as whimsical.

• 47:30Sean Fennessey?

Stuff in the second one is like more pink and colorful and exciting and they, some of that comes back. But I mean, this is like, we're in the jungle in this movie, you know? It's kind of the apocalypse now of Paddington movies.

• 47:42Speaker 03

  Okay. Heart of darkness.

• 47:43Sean Fennessey?

There is a heart of darkness quality to the movie.

• 47:46Speaker 03

  Heart of darkness.

• 47:48Amanda Dobbins?

Um, and they're definitely doing, like they also do Raiders at one point, which is very funny.

• 47:52Sean Fennessey?

  Rolling giant.

• 47:52Amanda Dobbins?

Um, I, you know, there was a boat and a plane. So in that sense, the three year old I was with was like absolutely out of his mind, excited. And then the orange stuff was so nice and friendly. And then they all make marmalade together.

• 48:06Sean Fennessey?

  I enjoyed that.

• 48:07Speaker 03

And then the, the speech, the ending speech.

• 48:09Amanda Dobbins?

My tribe and my family and.

• 48:10Speaker 03

I wept. I was literally weeping.

• 48:12Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. And then they all get to, and then everyone goes to London.

• 48:15Sean Fennessey?

So I'll tell you a quick story.

• 48:16Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 48:17Sean Fennessey?

Yasi and I saw this at the same screening.

• 48:19Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 48:19Sean Fennessey?

And Yasi met Eileen, Yasi met Alice. She'd not met them before.

• 48:23Speaker 03

  Best day of my life.

• 48:23Sean Fennessey?

Um, Eileen was very friendly, thankfully. Alice, a little less friendly, as you know, first timers.

• 48:29Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 48:29Sean Fennessey?

Um, you never know with Eileen.

• 48:31Speaker 03

  So beautiful.

• 48:32Amanda Dobbins?

Sean's wife. Yeah. I was taken aback. Yes.

• 48:35Sean Fennessey?

Uh, I used to have it back in the day. Not so much anymore, but I'm holding on tight.

• 48:39Amanda Dobbins?

No implication there, just praising your gorgeous wife.

• 48:42Sean Fennessey?

Alice, you know, a little shy around Yasi. And then we didn't speak of Yasi until two nights ago.

• 48:49Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 48:49Sean Fennessey?

Where we're sitting at the dinner table, me, Eileen and Alice, and she said, Dad, I need to make a podcast with Yasi.

• 48:58Sean Fennessey?

Talked about Yasi for 30 minutes straight. Said, Dad, I need to see pictures of Yasi.

• 49:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 49:02Sean Fennessey?

We need to talk about Paddington.

• 49:04Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay, yes.

• 49:05Sean Fennessey?

And is, is pretty obsessed right now.

• 49:08Amanda Dobbins?

  That's awesome.

• 49:09Sean Fennessey?

  So.

• 49:10Amanda Dobbins?

That's really special. Once again, I did cry when he sent me a video of this and I go, you know, I'll say something, I'm very popular with children. Can't explain it, but one thing I've noticed is I have very long hair. And young children associate that with princesses. Yes. And so often I have a bit of a leg up over other adults.

• 49:32Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I would say Yasi also has a princess name vibe.

• 49:35Amanda Dobbins?

Totally. And I have a childlike whimsical energy about myself. I see it as well. I like, I understand the response, but that's very exciting. Alice doesn't just choose anyone. I literally cry. And then the cutest was.

• 49:46Sean Fennessey?

She's a bit picky, to be honest.

• 49:47Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, I'm gonna put aside how alarmed I am that she's like, I want to make a podcast because that's what you do.

• 49:53Sean Fennessey?

This is a whole other thing. This means she was like, I want to be a movie director. Like, I don't even, I'm not even like telling her, I'm not like, dear, Steven Spielberg in 1987, like, I'm not doing that with her.

• 50:02Amanda Dobbins?

We don't need to curse anyone to become a podcaster.

• 50:04Sean Fennessey?

  I think she's just, she's absorbing.

• 50:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 50:07Sean Fennessey?

The general experiences of our lives. And she's thinking that this is how, what you, just what anyone does, you know?

• 50:12Amanda Dobbins?

Max just likes to use microphones. So anytime he can like scrabble up and get access to my home microphone, he'll sit there and he's like, I podcasting, I do a podcast. Dead. He's gonna be a star, they're both gonna be stars.

• 50:24Sean Fennessey?

  I hope not.

• 50:26Sean Fennessey?

Paddington 3 is really, is a really fun movie, a good family movie. And also a good movie if you don't have a family, honestly. They're just really well made.

• 50:35Amanda Dobbins?

They are like, they're the best family. I tried to borrow a child to take with me to the screening, but my little, my little.

• 50:40Speaker 03

  Little Nugget, Leo was unavailable.

• 50:42Sean Fennessey?

  Leo Woodall?

• 50:43Speaker 03

Leo Woodall. Harrison Dickinson didn't, uh, he was busy that day. He was in the Criterion Closet. And I went with my adult friend and we had a, we had a blast.

• 50:54Sean Fennessey?

  It's a good movie.

• 50:54Amanda Dobbins?

Can we, uh, close the loop on Hugh Grant and his year at the movies?

• 50:59Sean Fennessey?

Yes, of course. That's right. He, he, there's so many intersections in this movie. Jim Broadbent in this movie as well.

• 51:05Amanda Dobbins?

Knox was just like, Knox started pointing. I was like, him, him, hey, Paddington.

• 51:09Sean Fennessey?

  From Paddington, knowing Paddington 2.

• 51:10Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, because I mean, that's obviously our favorite.

• 51:13Speaker 03

  That was post credits, right?

• 51:15Sean Fennessey?

  It was.

• 51:15Speaker 03

I, I, we might've, I might've missed it if I hadn't come to like, cause remember the theater was empty when we saw that happen. I came to hang and talk to Alan Alex and we were just like chatting and then all of a sudden, empty theater comes up here. I'm like, I'm so glad I caught this.

• 51:29Sean Fennessey?

That's something that always happens for us, cause Alice is like, I want to stay for the credits for everything. Like even if we watch a movie at home, I'm glad it worked out. And now she knows about Stingers, which is great for her. She can get right into the MCU now. We can start right off with The Incredible Hulk.

• 51:42Amanda Dobbins?

Once again, Hugh Grant, very funny.

• 51:44Sean Fennessey?

  He did great.

• 51:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 51:46Speaker 03

  He's an international treasure.

• 51:47Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, it's funny. It does feel like, I mean, this is perhaps a segue to our conversation, you know? That there's like 87 people making movies together in England and they're all kinda all doing the same stuff in different tones, different genres. But then their worlds are all interconnected.

• 52:02Speaker 03

They have 87 of the best people.

• 52:04Sean Fennessey?

They're very good at what they do. Obviously, there's a long and storied history of British cinema. We're not talking about that today.

• 52:09Speaker 03

No, With Nell and I today.

• 52:10Sean Fennessey?

We're not talking about Noel Coward and David Lean and we're not talking about all those wonderful people. With Nell and I just announced to join the Criterion Collection this morning.

• 52:19Amanda Dobbins?

  It's just now?

• 52:21Sean Fennessey?

  It was not.

• 52:21Speaker 03

Just in time for me to go to the closet.

• 52:22Amanda Dobbins?

  What's wrong with that?

• 52:23Sean Fennessey?

There was an Arrow release for a long time, which is very good. Arrow, a British company.

• 52:27Amanda Dobbins?

  No.

• 52:28Sean Fennessey?

Also announced how to get ahead in advertising, uh, the, which is also stars Richard E. Grant, another Bruce Robinson movie. Also announced, another British filmmaker, one of your favorite filmmakers, The Three Musketeers and the Four Musketeers by Richard Lester, who of course directed Hard Day's Night.

• 52:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 52:43Sean Fennessey?

Criterion, just a banner morning. Thank you to them. 21st Century British Movie Canon. As I said, films with British stars and or directors, filmed in England or in the extended kingdom, detailing British aspects of life from love to crime to war to governance.

• 52:58Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 52:58Sean Fennessey?

What do you think of that?

• 52:59Speaker 03

  Are you counting Australia?

• 53:00Sean Fennessey?

  Australia and Canada.

• 53:02Amanda Dobbins?

  No.

• 53:02Sean Fennessey?

I don't think so. No, thank God. Because you know how I feel about Australia in that sense. I mean, Australia and Canada are not parts of the kingdom anymore. Well, at one point.

• 53:10Amanda Dobbins?

They, I think that the queen is, or the king is still on the money.

• 53:13Sean Fennessey?

We're not really talking about that.

• 53:15Amanda Dobbins?

But I think that the king is still on the money.

• 53:17Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah. In which country?

• 53:18Amanda Dobbins?

  In Canada and in.

• 53:20Sean Fennessey?

Prince Charles is on the money in Canada?

• 53:22Amanda Dobbins?

  Well, he's the king now.

• 53:23Sean Fennessey?

  The queen was for sure.

• 53:25Amanda Dobbins?

Not sure, Prince Charles cinema, by the way.

• 53:28Sean Fennessey?

  Yes, hopefully they're doing well.

• 53:29Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 53:30Sean Fennessey?

  Please support them.

• 53:30Amanda Dobbins?

Can you still sign the petition?

• 53:32Sean Fennessey?

I don't know. If you can, go do it.

• 53:34Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, if you can do, if you, if you live in the UK.

• 53:37Sean Fennessey?

To the UK? No, to the Prince Charles. No, but I'd like to. It's really cool.

• 53:40Amanda Dobbins?

I honestly, Paul the programmer is the best in the business.

• 53:42Sean Fennessey?

He is. It's a great place and I hope more people are patronizing it. Not to get the sub mad at you, but Ireland is not part of, as you know, only, or only Northern Ireland. I don't think I included any Irish films here.

• 53:56Amanda Dobbins?

  I don't think I did either.

• 53:58Sean Fennessey?

You didn't put the one that you just talked about, the musical. Oh, Sing Street? No. What did we just say? It was nominated for best picture. Oh, Kneecap. Kneecap. Kneecap. It is, it is cited as best British film.

• 54:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 54:10Sean Fennessey?

At the BAFTAs. I got yelled at a lot on, on my sub for this, so I'm just now hyper aware.

• 54:17Amanda Dobbins?

  Well, it's a, it's a.

• 54:19Sean Fennessey?

It's a thorny issue that has provoked significant strife over the years.

• 54:22Amanda Dobbins?

  Kneecap is, is Belfast, right?

• 54:25Sean Fennessey?

It is, which is Northern Ireland.

• 54:26Amanda Dobbins?

So that's, it's, it's, it's very complicated. I recommend the, the TV show Say Nothing.

• 54:32Sean Fennessey?

  Yes, wonderful TV show.

• 54:33Amanda Dobbins?

  Um.

• 54:34Sean Fennessey?

Shout out, Brad. Okay, so I've broken this into a handful of categories. You've added some categories as well. Hopefully, thank you. This is all gender essentialist, generational, and frankly, um.

• 54:43Amanda Dobbins?

Is this like 45 of my favorite movies?

• 54:45Sean Fennessey?

Overstated, but we will be naming a lot of good movies. The categories are for the lads.

• 54:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 54:51Sean Fennessey?

For the lasses. Mm-hmm. For the normies, for the cinephiles.

• 54:55Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 54:56Sean Fennessey?

And for Gen Z. Gen Z. Um. I mean, Gen Zed, I think. Gen Zed. It was very easy for me to make the list for the lads.

• 55:03Amanda Dobbins?

  I mean.

• 55:04Sean Fennessey?

This was one of the easiest jobs I've ever had on this podcast. Every movie I name is a movie that I care about deeply.

• 55:10Amanda Dobbins?

I think that you've, you've claimed a couple that go beyond the lads.

• 55:14Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, 24 Hour Party People is not a.

• 55:17Amanda Dobbins?

  For the lads.

• 55:18Sean Fennessey?

Was it for? Who's it for?

• 55:19Amanda Dobbins?

  Music loving people.

• 55:21Sean Fennessey?

But that's not one of the categories.

• 55:22Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, and I think Tinker Tailor.

• 55:25Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 55:25Amanda Dobbins?

  Is is broader for.

• 55:27Sean Fennessey?

Tinker Tailor is a film that.

• 55:28Amanda Dobbins?

  It's also.

• 55:28Sean Fennessey?

  Barely features a single woman.

• 55:30Amanda Dobbins?

It's but it's also for dads.

• 55:31Sean Fennessey?

It is. Oh, for the dads.

• 55:33Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, for the dads.

• 55:33Sean Fennessey?

  Lad dads.

• 55:34Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, lad dads.

• 55:34Sean Fennessey?

  Dad lads.

• 55:36Amanda Dobbins?

Um. In the Loop is for anyone who likes to laugh.

• 55:39Sean Fennessey?

Everyone can come into the lad tent.

• 55:41Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 55:42Sean Fennessey?

Come join us in the lad tent where we also have the film Snatch.

• 55:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 55:45Sean Fennessey?

Of course, we love Guy Ritchie here in America, in Britain. Uh, the Cornetto trilogy, we love the Edgar Wright movies, especially that that trio. Layer Cake, which, uh, Chris would take a bullet for Sienna Miller in that film.

• 55:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Fabulous movie.

• 55:57Sean Fennessey?

In Bruges, which is from an Irish-British filmmaker, Martin McDonagh. He kinda straddles the line.

• 56:04Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 56:05Sean Fennessey?

Sexy Beast, really any Jonathan Glazer movie, but some of them are for the cinephiles and some of them are for the lads.

• 56:11Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, but isn't. Get yourself in some hot water with these distinctions. Yeah, I was gonna say also, like, isn't, um, what's the Nicole Kidman one, Birth?

• 56:20Sean Fennessey?

  Sex, uh, Birth, yeah.

• 56:21Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, Birth is like a New York.

• 56:23Sean Fennessey?

  It is.

• 56:23Amanda Dobbins?

  So, I mean, I understand that he's a.

• 56:25Sean Fennessey?

It has a distinctly British sensibility, I would say.

• 56:26Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure, but like it's not.

• 56:28Sean Fennessey?

Danny Huston being an American with a British accent has always been confusing to me.

• 56:31Amanda Dobbins?

I think Birth is like the most underrated of the. Phenomenal. Maybe the best of the Jonathan Glazer films, but it's not on this canon, in this canon.

• 56:40Sean Fennessey?

Uh, Kill List, the Ben Wheatley movie.

• 56:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure, yeah.

• 56:42Sean Fennessey?

In the Loop, you mentioned. Attack the Block.

• 56:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 56:45Sean Fennessey?

  Sunshine.

• 56:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 56:47Sean Fennessey?

That's the Danny Boyle movie that the lads like. Uh, and Four Lions, Chris Morris's incredible comedy. For the Lasses, I took a shot at a couple and then you've added some more. Do you guys wanna talk through these? Do you think that there should be, I think you could do more, honestly, on this list.

• 57:00Amanda Dobbins?

You could do more. Where's Four Weddings? Well, it's 94, so this is 21st. I mean, that's the thing.

• 57:05Sean Fennessey?

Yes, these are all movies in the last 25 years.

• 57:07Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. I'm a love Actually truther, just so you guys know. And like a. Like, I love it. I don't care.

• 57:12Sean Fennessey?

It's fucking terrible and should be abolished from society.

• 57:14Amanda Dobbins?

No, here's the thing, it's powerful and I'm like, watch it every year. I don't know if we can be friends anymore. It's like.

• 57:19Sean Fennessey?

  I'll tell Alice.

• 57:20Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, it is, it's deeply, uh, problematic, uh, and. Oh, God, not back to all time. Leave me alone.

• 57:31Amanda Dobbins?

It's just like, how many different secretaries can we have affairs with? You know what I'm saying? Listen, if the shoe fence, babe. Okay, it's, it's true. It's how they be. Emma Thompson, like, all time in that movie. Really, really beautiful. Listen, we talked about this. And, you know, like, in many ways, you can't have Landman without Love Actually. So, because the Billy Bob Thornton character is just sort of, that's what happens next. It's like, it's like George W. then and George W.

• 57:58Sean Fennessey?

I hadn't really put that together, but that makes a lot of sense.

• 58:02Amanda Dobbins?

Okay, so Love Actually, obviously. Atonement, where are you on Atonement? I could only watch it the one time because it's devastating, but I did really like it. Had you read the book? Did you know it was coming? I didn't read the book. Okay, so how did that twist work for you? It was very painful. Okay. I'll never forget, I had, the, the book is one of the great novels of, of our lifetimes. But like, it's like buried in the last paragraph. And I read it and then like 30 minutes later, just like started weeping uncontrollably in my parents' home. I'll never forget it. Okay, Atonement. Wuthering Heights. Love. Uh, Love Actually, Joe Wright, Pride and Prejudice, Ov, About a Boy. Yes, it's the Hugh Grant of it all. Bridget Jones Diary, the original, 2001.

• 58:44Amanda Dobbins?

The Holiday, which, for the record, I do not endorse, but it's undeniable.

• 58:48Sean Fennessey?

What do you think of The Holiday?

• 58:49Amanda Dobbins?

It's, I'm not, it's fine. It's, yeah, it's not very good. Misuse of Kate Winslet. Yes. And.

• 58:57Sean Fennessey?

Everything, like, the three movies before and the two movies after Nancy Meyers?

• 59:01Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 59:01Sean Fennessey?

  Great. Love them.

• 59:02Amanda Dobbins?

But, but The Holiday is like, sort of like the cult's, I mean, it is like the Christmas aspect of it. People love it. Whatever. It's no hot frosty. Uh, Young Victoria.

• 59:12Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I like this movie too.

• 59:13Amanda Dobbins?

It's, that's a really good. Actually, I've not seen that. Uh, Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend. Sort of, it's like pre-crown. Yeah.

• 59:20Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 59:20Amanda Dobbins?

  Pre-crown, but like, crown-esque.

• 59:23Sean Fennessey?

Saw this on a plane one time and I was like, whoa.

• 59:25Amanda Dobbins?

With the edges sanded off. Yeah, it's just kind of like a romance. It's, it's pretty nice. Paul Bettany plays, uh, Lord Marlborough, I think. Prime Minister, yeah. It's a good movie. Okay. The Normies.

• 59:37Sean Fennessey?

So this is, these are the movies that break through. They're usually box office successes. They sometimes get awards attention. They feel distinctly British, I think, is the thing. They're almost about, say, the tropes of British life. Dashing spies, the class system, the king, the queen.

• 59:58Amanda Dobbins?

  The empire.

• 59:59Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 1:00:00Amanda Dobbins?

The disintegration of empire. Their spies are better than ours.

• 1:00:03Sean Fennessey?

I think they're considered cooler for one obvious reason because, you know, Casino Royale and Skyfall.

• 1:00:08Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:08Sean Fennessey?

  Are.

• 1:00:09Amanda Dobbins?

You had Casino Royale, I, as always, the Skyfall sand, but it also like.

• 1:00:13Sean Fennessey?

They're both great. I think Casino Royale is more this.

• 1:00:17Amanda Dobbins?

  No, but like.

• 1:00:18Sean Fennessey?

Because it was the first one.

• 1:00:19Amanda Dobbins?

But Skyfall is like about the empire and like, and mommy issues. And it has the, you know, the shot of like all of the coffins and him like running through London, like while they're doing tennis in, like, it's about, it's.

• 1:00:34Sean Fennessey?

But when you're talking about our high minded ideas.

• 1:00:37Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:37Sean Fennessey?

This, you could make the case that Skyfall is for the cinephiles and the Casino Royale is for the normies.

• 1:00:42Amanda Dobbins?

Well, that's fine. It's on the list.

• 1:00:43Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:00:44Amanda Dobbins?

  Skyfall is incredible.

• 1:00:45Sean Fennessey?

  1917.

• 1:00:46Amanda Dobbins?

  It also has Harvey Arberdem.

• 1:00:47Sean Fennessey?

  It does.

• 1:00:48Amanda Dobbins?

  Mommy was very bad.

• 1:00:50Sean Fennessey?

  1917, Paddington 2.

• 1:00:53Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. Okay, do you guys know a little piece of trivia? How beloved Paddington is in the UK? And apparently when the Queen was ill, she did a little video. Do you remember this? It was for her jubilee. For her jubilee and she did, had tea and marmalade sandwich with Paddington. And there was like public outcry, people being like, Paddington, no, we, she is anti, you're an immigrant, Paddington, how dare you sit and take tea with the Queen? Which I love that, that people were really upset about Paddington.

• 1:01:24Sean Fennessey?

  That's interesting.

• 1:01:25Amanda Dobbins?

Aligning with them on our. It is like they're, like Knox is fully Paddington filled, but in large part because loved ones have gone to the UK, including like Chris Ryan, and they're just like, the only souvenirs to buy. There's a whole Paddington store. Yeah, no, I mean, but it's just like, it's like everywhere. They have like fully exported that. Do we have one of those? You could say Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse has no like um. Like. Ethical and moral compass that I'm aware of, you know, like. Well, just like America. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Maybe Winnie the Pooh, but that's fallen on hard times. Isn't Winnie the Pooh British?

• 1:02:01Sean Fennessey?

I tend to think the Muppets occupy this space and like the Sesame Street Muppets.

• 1:02:06Amanda Dobbins?

  That's a Sesame Street Muppets. That's a good.

• 1:02:08Sean Fennessey?

  Big Bird and and and.

• 1:02:10Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, Grover is giving us some life lessons for sure.

• 1:02:12Sean Fennessey?

Bird and Kermit are kind of like the moral center of those two properties.

• 1:02:17Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, but they're like not as big as Paddington internationally. No way.

• 1:02:23Amanda Dobbins?

  Elmo is probably.

• 1:02:24Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I mean, Big Bird is not what he wants. I just saw follow that.

• 1:02:28Amanda Dobbins?

Elmo's just like a dumb kid, you know, he doesn't bring anything to the table. Like trying to like is pushing Paddington like Big Sesame is pushing Elmo.

• 1:02:36Sean Fennessey?

  It's true.

• 1:02:37Amanda Dobbins?

Elmo is like doing SpawnCon with Roger Federer right now, which on the one hand like target audience. On the other hand, like, what are we doing?

• 1:02:45Sean Fennessey?

Well, I think the thing that Elmo does that is nice is that he preaches a kind of sincerity that I think the world could use from time to time.

• 1:02:52Amanda Dobbins?

I love Paddington. In a less annoying way. I love Paddington. I love Elmo. I love Roger Federer. Like, why are we advertising for On Running? Grover would never be, that's all I'm saying.

• 1:03:01Sean Fennessey?

Uh, it's a good question about the what is what are the equivalents? We don't really have quite the same thing.

• 1:03:07Amanda Dobbins?

Sorry to bring it back to Paddington. We can continue to the canon.

• 1:03:10Sean Fennessey?

Slumdog Millionaire, bit of a thinker here. Obviously not a film set in England, made by a distinctly English filmmaker, a huge hit. Kind of sort of empire bound because of the history of India and England. And I wasn't sure of whether it should go in. It's a tougher call than something like Darkest Hour.

• 1:03:27Amanda Dobbins?

  Right, which is just about.

• 1:03:29Sean Fennessey?

Churchill and, you know, about that the country were during World War Two. Same for The King's Speech and The Queen. These are very standard entertaining. Sometime better than average movies about this space.

• 1:03:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Didn't say The King's.

• 1:03:44Sean Fennessey?

Um, King's Speech, you know, has a dreadful reputation now because it beat The Social Network at the Oscars, but it's not bad.

• 1:03:51Amanda Dobbins?

Like a Harvey Weinstein scene in Jimmy. Well, he did leave some stamps.

• 1:03:54Sean Fennessey?

Did you like it when it came out?

• 1:03:56Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, yeah, sure. Who was the star? Colin Firth.

• 1:03:58Sean Fennessey?

  Colin Firth.

• 1:03:59Amanda Dobbins?

  We love him.

• 1:03:59Sean Fennessey?

  And Guy Pearce.

• 1:04:00Amanda Dobbins?

Love Guy Pearce. Oh, right. He plays the...

• 1:04:03Sean Fennessey?

Brother who can't step up. What's that guy's name?

• 1:04:07Amanda Dobbins?

Uncle David is what they call him. Edward something? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:04:10Sean Fennessey?

Dick. Went off and married an American movie star.

• 1:04:13Amanda Dobbins?

Helen Bonham Carter plays the... Oh, yeah. Love him.

• 1:04:15Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah. Great story.

• 1:04:16Amanda Dobbins?

He's great in The Crown, too.

• 1:04:16Sean Fennessey?

  What an asshole.

• 1:04:17Amanda Dobbins?

  That's right.

• 1:04:18Sean Fennessey?

For the cinephiles. There's been a lot of really good British films in the last 25 years.

• 1:04:22Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:22Sean Fennessey?

So, ones that popped into my mind, you guys added some, too. The Souvenir and Part Two, I suppose. Weekend, Andrew Hayes movie. I've got two Weekend, Andrew Hayes movies here. Forty-five years this year. I guess All of Us Strangers should be considered, too.

• 1:04:33Amanda Dobbins?

  I was gonna say, yeah.

• 1:04:35Sean Fennessey?

  Fish Tank.

• 1:04:36Amanda Dobbins?

Love Fish Tank. One of my faves.

• 1:04:37Sean Fennessey?

Andrea Arnold's great movie. Hunger, Stephen McQueen's first film. Happy Go Lucky was my Mike Lee pick. I mean...

• 1:04:45Amanda Dobbins?

It's one of my favorite Mike Lee movies. Maybe like, top three.

• 1:04:48Sean Fennessey?

It's a favorite of mine as well, and I feel like it's the most British, until Hard Truths, you know, about life. And obviously, a lot of his movies in the 80s and 90s and 70s even are about that.

• 1:04:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 1:04:57Sean Fennessey?

That one in particular is not like a period piece. Morven Callar.

• 1:05:01Amanda Dobbins?

  I love Morven Callar.

• 1:05:03Sean Fennessey?

Bloody Sunday, Paul Greengrass's first movie. The Deep Blue Sea, the late Terrence Davies. I don't know if it's his most, maybe not his most recent movie, but the movie before that with Rachel Weisz. You added Dunkirk, which I think is a great call.

• 1:05:17Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:17Sean Fennessey?

Now, Dunkirk, to me, occupies basically all of these categories.

• 1:05:20Amanda Dobbins?

  Of course.

• 1:05:21Sean Fennessey?

  This is the rare tic-tac-toe.

• 1:05:22Amanda Dobbins?

  It's definitely lad dad.

• 1:05:23Sean Fennessey?

Yes. Lad dad. Something for the lasses with Hardy at the end.

• 1:05:27Amanda Dobbins?

The normies, of course, love Dunkirk.

• 1:05:30Sean Fennessey?

  Gen Z loves Dunkirk.

• 1:05:31Amanda Dobbins?

Gen Z. Oh, that's right. Gen Z, yeah.

• 1:05:34Sean Fennessey?

An education? Is an education for cinephiles or for the lasses?

• 1:05:37Amanda Dobbins?

You know what? Please, excuse me.

• 1:05:39Sean Fennessey?

  Excuse you.

• 1:05:40Amanda Dobbins?

  It's really well-made.

• 1:05:41Sean Fennessey?

My wife loves this movie. This is a huge favorite of hers.

• 1:05:43Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, so why does it just have to be for girls? Why can women enjoy all cinema because we are so superior?

• 1:05:49Sean Fennessey?

  You're right.

• 1:05:49Amanda Dobbins?

And just because it's about women? Simply cannot bear to watch anything that doesn't have a war or a spy in it.

• 1:05:54Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, great.

• 1:05:56Amanda Dobbins?

  There you go.

• 1:05:56Sean Fennessey?

  Good for you guys.

• 1:05:57Amanda Dobbins?

Also featuring Emma Thompson. I mean, that, this is like another subset is like, does the movie have Hugh Grant?

• 1:06:02Sean Fennessey?

  Emma Thompson.

• 1:06:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Emma Thompson. Tom Hardy.

• 1:06:05Sean Fennessey?

Peter Sarsgaard pulling a Renee Zellweger in that movie.

• 1:06:08Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:09Sean Fennessey?

  Very incredible British guy.

• 1:06:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Keira Knightley.

• 1:06:13Sean Fennessey?

Love Keira Knightley. Keira Knightley, she's in the Hall of Fame of these movies.

• 1:06:15Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:06:15Sean Fennessey?

We love Tom Hardy. And then Phantom Thread, you know. Yeah, I say yes. It is.

• 1:06:18Amanda Dobbins?

  It is.

• 1:06:19Sean Fennessey?

It's PTA, but it is. One of my faves of all time. For Gen Z, I'm glad you added this.

• 1:06:24Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, just because I like, I, I, I don't need the children yelling at me about What a Girl Wants. I know. It's like very important to them.

• 1:06:33Sean Fennessey?

What is What a Girl Wants?

• 1:06:34Amanda Dobbins?

So Colin Firth is another person of like, if Colin Firth is in the movie, so.

• 1:06:38Sean Fennessey?

What a Girl Wants, in my head, is a Christina Aguilera song.

• 1:06:40Amanda Dobbins?

Which, and it is an incredible song, and I think it, like, What a Girl Wants, the Aguilera song is tied to, so it's in Amanda Bynes' film where Amanda Bynes finds out.

• 1:06:48Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, yes, yes, yes.

• 1:06:48Amanda Dobbins?

  That her dad.

• 1:06:49Sean Fennessey?

  Yes, yes.

• 1:06:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Is Colin Firth.

• 1:06:51Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:06:51Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, and so then she like goes to London.

• 1:06:53Sean Fennessey?

It's actually a great movie. Okay.

• 1:06:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:55Sean Fennessey?

Kind of some Princess Sofia vibes there. Sofia the first.

• 1:06:58Amanda Dobbins?

Princess Sofia becomes a princess because her mom marries the king, okay? Like, it's not, yeah.

• 1:07:04Sean Fennessey?

I don't acknowledge that part of it.

• 1:07:05Amanda Dobbins?

It's like a, you know, a combined, a joined family situation.

• 1:07:08Sean Fennessey?

Have you seen Sofia the first? No. Okay.

• 1:07:10Amanda Dobbins?

I watched it with Alice. And then like.

• 1:07:13Sean Fennessey?

  I was not a fan.

• 1:07:13Amanda Dobbins?

And, I mean, it was total garbage. I love watching it with Alice. It's a, it's like a computer CGI animated show.

• 1:07:21Sean Fennessey?

  I'm good.

• 1:07:21Amanda Dobbins?

And Sofia finds out that Sofia was not born a princess, but then she becomes a princess. And the episode that we watched was about Mother's Day and how Sofia used to celebrate it with just her mom, but now she has to celebrate it with her stepchildren, with her stepbrother and sister as well. Who are the reason that she's a princess? But anyway, so I came into Sofia cold, and so I was asking Alice a lot of questions about kind of like family structure and, and Alice wasn't really willing to engage with me during the.

• 1:07:52Sean Fennessey?

She was kind of locked in the show. It's a little hard to talk. She was like. It's kind of like me. She was like, can you?

• 1:07:55Speaker 03

  Not talk.

• 1:07:56Amanda Dobbins?

No, she didn't even say anything. And so then I start yelling to Sean. I'm like, so Sean, is this a stepdad situation?

• 1:08:01Sean Fennessey?

And the whole time I was just like, well, I made her shut the fuck up.

• 1:08:04Amanda Dobbins?

And no, Sean's just like on his computer being like, no, I am like emailing about, you know, episodes in 2028. It's really amazing what you can do with an hour of free time. I've been meaning to say that to you. It's just like,

• 1:08:15Sean Fennessey?

  Very productive.

• 1:08:16Amanda Dobbins?

I know, but it's like the light goes on.

• 1:08:18Speaker 03

  At what cost?

• 1:08:20Amanda Dobbins?

  And

• 1:08:20Sean Fennessey?

  We're gonna find out.

• 1:08:21Amanda Dobbins?

And I just, I hear from you and then I know what's gonna be happening for the next three to five years.

• 1:08:26Sean Fennessey?

Yep, I know how to plan. What else is in Gen Z?

• 1:08:29Amanda Dobbins?

Ben Dela Beckham, speaking of Kira Knightley.

• 1:08:31Sean Fennessey?

  Never seen it.

• 1:08:33Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, it's, oh, it's nice.

• 1:08:34Speaker 03

  It's very

• 1:08:34Sean Fennessey?

Not for any reason. I just never saw it. I was in college when it came out.

• 1:08:37Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, you should also show it to Alice. Eileen and Alice should watch it.

• 1:08:40Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:08:40Sean Fennessey?

Great, okay. I'll let them know. I believe it. Parminder Nagra, is that the star?

• 1:08:44Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:08:44Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Harry Potter movies?

• 1:08:46Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, this is a good point. This is kind of for normies too, right?

• 1:08:49Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:08:50Speaker 03

  They've been tinged a bit with a Weinstein-esque, uh,

• 1:08:53Sean Fennessey?

  Some scandal.

• 1:08:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Afterglow.

• 1:08:55Sean Fennessey?

  Movies in the synth though.

• 1:08:56Speaker 03

  Fabulous movies.

• 1:08:57Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, I like them too.

• 1:08:59Amanda Dobbins?

Um, I didn't add Sing Street, so.

• 1:09:00Sean Fennessey?

Sing Street Irish, so maybe not Sing Street. Any other, any other movies that we haven't listed here spring to mind? I'm sure there's a great many that people are like, how could you not have named?

• 1:09:10Amanda Dobbins?

So everyone, just to be clear, we're doing 21st century only. So like a lot of Hugh Grant movies, like The Parent Trap for all my Gen Z kids, which is also, it's, that's a bridge between my generation and your generation, but that's 98, so.

• 1:09:25Sean Fennessey?

  What about Philomena?

• 1:09:26Amanda Dobbins?

Keep it to yourself. Oh, sure. Yeah.

• 1:09:28Sean Fennessey?

That's a good one, right? Or the Trip movies?

• 1:09:30Amanda Dobbins?

Judi Dench is another one where if Judi Dench is in your movie, then, yeah.

• 1:09:34Sean Fennessey?

If Judi Dench is there, if Steve Coogan is there, in many ways, there's some, some angle file.

• 1:09:39Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:40Sean Fennessey?

Uh, honestly, if Stephen Freer has directed it, more than likely,

• 1:09:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Totally.

• 1:09:43Sean Fennessey?

  It's, it's a part of this family.

• 1:09:45Speaker 03

You know, I noticed you didn't Better Man.

• 1:09:48Sean Fennessey?

Well, yes. You know, mixed on Better Man.

• 1:09:49Amanda Dobbins?

  Would Mama Mia count?

• 1:09:51Sean Fennessey?

  Mama Mia?

• 1:09:52Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:52Sean Fennessey?

  Not a film I've seen.

• 1:09:53Speaker 03

I actually haven't seen Mama Mia either.

• 1:09:55Amanda Dobbins?

Okay, oh, we talked about this last time.

• 1:09:57Sean Fennessey?

  We did.

• 1:09:57Amanda Dobbins?

Okay, it's so it's like the biggest ever British movie, but I guess it's filmed in Greece.

• 1:10:03Sean Fennessey?

  With half American cast.

• 1:10:05Amanda Dobbins?

Right, but the other half of them are British. Um, I guess it doesn't count.

• 1:10:10Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:10:11Amanda Dobbins?

It's more international. In Mama Mia two, I think like Donna was in London. I wish someone here could could work with me on this.

• 1:10:22Amanda Dobbins?

You know, maybe I'll just show Mama Mia to Alice and she'll love it. And then you have to watch the whole universe for.

• 1:10:27Sean Fennessey?

  It's all in play.

• 1:10:27Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:10:28Sean Fennessey?

It's all in, I honestly, I encourage her to have well rounded ideas. I don't want her to just be a vessel for my taste.

• 1:10:33Speaker 03

I thought of something by doing a Google.

• 1:10:35Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:10:36Speaker 03

  Shaun of the Dead.

• 1:10:37Sean Fennessey?

  I said the Cornetto trilogy.

• 1:10:38Speaker 03

  Okay, sorry.

• 1:10:39Sean Fennessey?

  That's what that is called.

• 1:10:39Speaker 03

  My bad, yes, okay.

• 1:10:40Sean Fennessey?

  Shaun of the Dead.

• 1:10:43Speaker 03

Really showing my my lack of cinephile knowledge.

• 1:10:46Amanda Dobbins?

And you're being a little bit of a of a Letterboxd nerd just then.

• 1:10:51Speaker 03

I'll be honest, I didn't know. I didn't know what the crux of it was.

• 1:10:54Sean Fennessey?

  Very excited for the running.

• 1:10:55Amanda Dobbins?

Aren't they all? Uh, do you think Harris Dickinson uses Letterboxd?

• 1:10:58Sean Fennessey?

I would be surprised if he doesn't, based on that level of correspondence out of the Criterion Closet.

• 1:11:03Amanda Dobbins?

But he doesn't really seem like a a phone guy, you know? So.

• 1:11:07Sean Fennessey?

  She said aspirationally.

• 1:11:09Speaker 03

  Yeah, I know.

• 1:11:10Sean Fennessey?

She said longingly picturing herself beside him.

• 1:11:13Amanda Dobbins?

  You know, it's really powerful.

• 1:11:15Sean Fennessey?

  I think, um.

• 1:11:16Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, it's just like, he's like reached a level where he like, doesn't have to be on his phone like like the rest of us.

• 1:11:22Sean Fennessey?

I think his accent is camouflaging an unfortunate truth for you, which is that he's more similar to me than he is to you.

• 1:11:30Amanda Dobbins?

But like, yes, but there are some material differences.

• 1:11:33Speaker 03

Again, it feels aspirational for you. I'm gonna be.

• 1:11:36Sean Fennessey?

I don't know. He was in his bag.

• 1:11:38Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:38Sean Fennessey?

He was like, oh, of course, World Cinema Project, Volume Two. Thank you, Martin Scorsese.

• 1:11:42Amanda Dobbins?

No, I get it. But like, this is what I'm saying, like, I know you think that's good for you, but like, I don't know if it's good for you.

• 1:11:47Sean Fennessey?

You think he's gonna, he's market correcting me?

• 1:11:49Amanda Dobbins?

Well, yeah, I'm just sort of, I'm just sort of like, if that's available, then like, we don't have to accept this. Do you know what I mean?

• 1:11:54Speaker 03

You don't, you don't. You don't want someone to be the best version of.

• 1:11:59Amanda Dobbins?

  What you could be.

• 1:12:00Sean Fennessey?

It's one of those things where should I invite him on the show or should he never be allowed on the show?

• 1:12:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Right, that's really.

• 1:12:04Speaker 03

If you invite him on the show, unfortunately, I will have to be under the table.

• 1:12:06Amanda Dobbins?

  I, I literally, I, I can't be anywhere near him, you know?

• 1:12:10Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, he's a handsome guy. You know, I was also kind of thrown, he also had a side part and I was like, side part two? Like, you're really, you're in all my spaces right now, which is much better. It's tough. He's very tall.

• 1:12:20Speaker 03

Did I ever tell you about the bizarre interaction I had with Jason Statham?

• 1:12:23Sean Fennessey?

  No.

• 1:12:24Amanda Dobbins?

Okay, well, this is a great way to finish, uh, British.

• 1:12:27Speaker 03

In one of my many lives, I was in St. Bart, um, for, for the holiday season and, uh, visiting a.

• 1:12:36Sean Fennessey?

Was St. Bart a British isle at, at a certain point?

• 1:12:38Speaker 03

  It's a good question.

• 1:12:38Sean Fennessey?

  Could have, could have.

• 1:12:39Amanda Dobbins?

  I think it was French.

• 1:12:40Speaker 03

  I think, yeah.

• 1:12:41Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:12:41Speaker 03

Yeah. Um, and there, you know, all the rich people go and they have their yachts. And what they do is they host celebrities on their yachts. That's kind of like their.

• 1:12:51Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 1:12:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:52Speaker 03

  Fun little game.

• 1:12:52Sean Fennessey?

We get all the paparazzi opportunity.

• 1:12:54Speaker 03

Yeah. And then you go to parties on yachts via small boats.

• 1:12:59Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:13:00Speaker 03

So we'd gone to a party on one yacht.

• 1:13:02Sean Fennessey?

This was witnessed most recently in a season of, of industry.

• 1:13:05Speaker 03

Okay, so they, they, they got in on the, the truth of the matter. So we're at this one party, I'm like 27 or 28 at this point. The pussycat dolls performed on this yacht.

• 1:13:16Sean Fennessey?

Wow. Who's your favorite pussycat doll?

• 1:13:19Speaker 03

Well, I only know the one.

• 1:13:20Sean Fennessey?

  Scherzinger.

• 1:13:21Speaker 03

  Yeah, Scherzinger, she.

• 1:13:22Sean Fennessey?

Currently on Broadway in Sunset Boulevard. I know the world is so strange.

• 1:13:25Speaker 03

Nicholas Hexham and Amber is the color of your energy, I believe, is about her.

• 1:13:27Sean Fennessey?

  That's right. That's right.

• 1:13:29Speaker 03

Yes, so they're performing, Martha Stewart is dancing over here, Anthony Kiedis. I'm losing my whole mind being like, why am I here?

• 1:13:37Sean Fennessey?

  Why were you there?

• 1:13:38Speaker 03

My college roommate, um, was a, is a billionaire.

• 1:13:42Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:13:42Speaker 03

So me and my cousin are together, we all lived together in college. And so now it's time to go to another party. So we're, we are getting on the mini boat.

• 1:13:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:13:51Speaker 03

And, you know, I have to think I had my. Makeup like this, I always wear makeup like this. I get on and I'm separated from my cousin, I'm sitting next to Brian Grazer and his wife. I don't know them, they're just saying it to me. And then Jason Statham and Rosie Huntington Whiteley get on the boat.

• 1:14:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh.

• 1:14:06Speaker 03

And he looks at me and he goes, wow, you were phenomenal in there. Implying that perhaps he had mistaken me for a pussycat doll. Now, everyone on this little boat looks at me and we're talking Brian Grazer, we're talking Lawrence Bender, we are talking, you know, and I'm horrified, mortified. And then I go, and then, because then, then he realizes. I was not a pussycat doll. And he goes, oh, no, no, sorry, that wasn't you, my bad. And then everyone's still looking at me and I go, I was amazing in there. I'm amazing all the time and you, you are mistaken. And then everyone claps, they start clapping. And then I was like, I don't understand what just happened.

• 1:14:46Sean Fennessey?

  Wow.

• 1:14:47Speaker 03

  So that was my.

• 1:14:47Amanda Dobbins?

And then how much longer are you on the small boat with them?

• 1:14:50Speaker 03

Exactly, how much, like, like, a long enough time that it's awkward.

• 1:14:53Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay, yeah, incredible.

• 1:14:55Speaker 03

Seven to 10 more minutes, yeah.

• 1:14:57Amanda Dobbins?

Hats off to you, that's really good.

• 1:14:59Sean Fennessey?

  And no one was like.

• 1:15:00Amanda Dobbins?

Did you do it in a British accent?

• 1:15:02Sean Fennessey?

  Assassinated or?

• 1:15:02Speaker 03

  No, I should have really.

• 1:15:03Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, because that's sort of like.

• 1:15:05Speaker 03

I had to think on my feet to avoid further humiliation, thank you.

• 1:15:10Sean Fennessey?

Are there any Jason Statham films that belong in this conversation?

• 1:15:15Sean Fennessey?

He's frequently playing an American guy with a very clearly bad American and covering up a British accent. I mean, obviously he's in Snatch.

• 1:15:22Speaker 03

Did you guys, do you guys watch Snatch with this up to hell? Because I do, I have to. Are you able at this point to determine exactly what they're saying?

• 1:15:30Sean Fennessey?

  Like dogs?

• 1:15:31Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay, I mean.

• 1:15:32Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:15:33Amanda Dobbins?

I don't totally understand everything, but it's, it doesn't really matter, you know, I just kind of let it wash over me.

• 1:15:39Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:15:39Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:41Sean Fennessey?

Any closing thoughts here? Do you feel we did great work?

• 1:15:44Amanda Dobbins?

Should we try the marmalade sandwiches?

• 1:15:46Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, yeah, let's, let's try one.

• 1:15:48Speaker 03

  Pass them around.

• 1:15:49Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:49Sean Fennessey?

People love to listen to people eat.

• 1:15:51Amanda Dobbins?

Well, we can just give a review.

• 1:15:53Speaker 03

  There's a whole cottage industry.

• 1:15:54Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:15:55Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay, thank you so much.

• 1:15:56Sean Fennessey?

I do love whole wheat bread.

• 1:15:58Speaker 03

That's, I looked it up and that's the bread, the padding. Can use this or Aunt Lucy used.

• 1:16:02Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:16:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, this is great.

• 1:16:04Sean Fennessey?

  So marmalade, first time.

• 1:16:07Amanda Dobbins?

I think so. I mean, it's just orange jam.

• 1:16:09Sean Fennessey?

  What did you think about?

• 1:16:12Sean Fennessey?

The machine that they built instantaneously at the end of Paddington and Peru to create jam?

• 1:16:16Speaker 03

  Why did they have sugar?

• 1:16:17Amanda Dobbins?

  I think that the.

• 1:16:20Speaker 03

Where did it even come from? Why have jars?

• 1:16:22Sean Fennessey?

Really good question. This is good.

• 1:16:23Amanda Dobbins?

You know, I thought that the, the, the son needs to get his inventions out in the world, you know? So as a, as a boy mom, I found that inspiring. It's how to bring your son's, you know, gifts to the, to the broader world. Get them away from the video screen.

• 1:16:41Speaker 03

  Tiny, tiny extra criticism.

• 1:16:43Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:43Speaker 03

They showed a close up of the daughter's hand at one point. She had hand tattoos and I was like, she's supposed to be 17 and not yet at college. Who let her get hand tattoos? And I think perhaps the actress is older and has them and they forgot to put makeup on them.

• 1:16:57Sean Fennessey?

So should I not have let Alice get hand tattoos? Is that what you're saying?

• 1:16:59Speaker 03

  I'm gonna take her.

• 1:17:00Amanda Dobbins?

  So back when the mom.

• 1:17:01Speaker 03

That's the kind of aunt I am. Venice Beach, we're going. The minute she turns 10.

• 1:17:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Sounds great.

• 1:17:07Sean Fennessey?

  Please don't do that.

• 1:17:08Speaker 03

She's getting a belly button piercing.

• 1:17:10Amanda Dobbins?

Okay, my verdict is this is good.

• 1:17:12Sean Fennessey?

  Same. Yasi, thank you.

• 1:17:13Amanda Dobbins?

  Thank you, Yasi.

• 1:17:14Sean Fennessey?

  Great job.

• 1:17:14Speaker 03

  For having me.

• 1:17:15Sean Fennessey?

You brought, really brought the Anglo spirit. Three Americans here talking nonsense.

• 1:17:20Amanda Dobbins?

I'm, I'm willing to go back to the UK anytime. We were talking about this last week, just, you know, wherever you need me to come and talk to people.

• 1:17:29Speaker 03

A big pick, Banzplane crossover live event for the end of the British season of Banzplane, which we then make into a film festival.

• 1:17:40Sean Fennessey?

When is that? Isn't that season ending fairly soon?

• 1:17:42Speaker 03

  In June.

• 1:17:43Amanda Dobbins?

That's, that's a lovely time to go to the UK.

• 1:17:45Speaker 03

Beautiful time for us to go to the UK.

• 1:17:48Sean Fennessey?
