• 1:03Josh Horowitz?

So it's there, it comes out in certain situations?

• 1:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:07Josh Horowitz?

And how does it manifest? What does that mean? Is that just like getting up and?

• 1:10Speaker 02

It could be, it could be an impromptu performance. It could be a time step here and there.

• 1:15Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 1:17Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:17Josh Horowitz?

Practicing a dance move when you walked in, a new one you just learned?

• 1:20Speaker 02

  Wow, you just exposed me.

• 1:22Josh Horowitz?

  Sorry.

• 1:22Speaker 02

No, that's okay. I was practicing a dance move about 15 minutes ago. Yeah.

• 1:27Speaker 04

Prepare your ears, humans. Happy, sad, confused begins now.

She hasn't done, I think, a lot of long-form conversations and I'm thrilled that she chose to spend her time with me promoting a whole lot of things, from her new film Odessa on Hulu, her new play coming to Broadway, John Proctor's The Villain, and of course, the upcoming season of Stranger Things. So yes, that is the main event on today's Happy, Sad, Confused. Before we get to that, so many things to keep you guys abreast of in terms of Happy, Sad, Confused world.

Robocop reunion, a Once Upon a Time reunion, a John Boyega conversation, and the marquee big event, a reunion of The Breakfast Club. So that's gonna be a treat. All the information is in the show notes. Get your tickets now for all these events. It's gonna be fun, and there's more to come. More to come. Alright, so back to today's main event, Sadie Sink. Okay, Sadie Sink is 21, 22? She's so young, has already accomplished so much. Of course, most people came to know her thanks to her performance in Stranger Things, particularly

• 4:27Josh Horowitz?

in season four, when she had that remarkable arc, and repopularized Kate Bush for the masses. She's truly a great talent, I think, as evidenced by both Stranger Things, her performance in The Whale, and now has a lot going on. She has this crazy new movie.

• 4:49Josh Horowitz?

Called Odessa, it is kind of a, not kind of, it is, it's a rock opera, post-apocalyptic, big swing of a crazy movie, and she is front and center. She is singing her heart out in this. For those who don't know, she had her roots, Sadie did, singing on Broadway in Annie as a little kid, and now she's returned to singing in this, and she's exceptional in it. It's on Hulu, March 20th. Also, March 20th, actually, same day, previews begin in New York City for her return to Broadway in a play. John Proctor is the villain, which I'm very excited to see, and is a big moment for her. So caught her at this kind of big

• 5:30Josh Horowitz?

transitional moment, as the play begins, as the movie comes out, and as we careen towards the end of Stranger Things, they have wrap production, so of course, we talk a lot about the end of Stranger Things, too. So, there was a lot to chat about. She's super sweet. I really enjoyed this long conversation with her. I think you guys will, too. As always, remember to subscribe if you haven't already. As I said, hit that, check out that Patreon on patreon.com/happystayconfused, and come on out and see me in person one of these days, because we have a good time when we do these in person. All right, here it is, me and Sadie Sink. Enjoy. Sadie, are you ready to be podcasted?

• 6:10Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 6:11Josh Horowitz?

  We're doing this.

• 6:12Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 6:13Josh Horowitz?

Nice. Congratulations, you have a lot going on, so I more than appreciate the time, because you should be, you really should be rehearsing right now, let's be real.

• 6:21Speaker 02

I really should be. I have like, some serious FOMO today.

• 6:25Josh Horowitz?

What portion of your brain is at the rehearsal stage with your buddies, or is it gonna be your return to Broadway?

• 6:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 6:30Josh Horowitz?

We'll get to that in a sec, but what portion of your brain is over there right now?

• 6:33Speaker 02

I'm trying to compartmentalize a bit, and just focus on like,

• 6:38Josh Horowitz?

Oh no, I'm ruining it now.

• 6:39Speaker 02

Odessa today. But no, every once in a while, during the break, I'm like, oh, why am I not, why am I not at the theater right now? We just moved in yesterday.

• 6:46Josh Horowitz?

Oh, that's a big transition point.

• 6:48Speaker 02

  So it's super exciting.

• 6:49Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, okay, we'll get there, but congratulations on Odessa.

• 6:52Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 6:54Josh Horowitz?

I want to start by egregiously name dropping, but it's for a good cause. I texted Winona yesterday, and I said I was gonna, I said I was gonna talk to you. There were a lot of exclamation points.

• 7:05Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 7:05Josh Horowitz?

There was a lot of big hearts. She loves you.

• 7:08Speaker 02

I love her. She's the best.

• 7:10Josh Horowitz?

  She's the best.

• 7:11Speaker 02

You also did, like, yeah, that was a big flex.

• 7:14Josh Horowitz?

Well, you know. It's my proudest achievement, honestly, in my career, but I know Winona Ryder.

• 7:19Speaker 02

  She's so awesome.

• 7:21Josh Horowitz?

So what does it mean to have someone like Winona in your corner? She wrote an amazing, do you want to be embarrassed and have me read the Time Magazine thing she wrote about you?

• 7:29Speaker 02

  Oh, okay.

• 7:30Josh Horowitz?

Okay, let's just get it out of the way.

• 7:31Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 7:32Josh Horowitz?

  Blush if you have to.

• 7:33Speaker 02

  I will.

• 7:34Josh Horowitz?

This is Winona on Sadie Sink. I distinctly remember the first time I saw Sadie Sink, it was on the great show The Americans. Although brief, it was a stunning moment and a rare one. I wrote her name down in my notebook. I knew that this was someone extraordinary, someone to watch. So when the planets aligned and she came on to Stranger Things, it felt like a little secret victory. Her max is full of such exquisite detail, fierce, complicated, and so incredibly strong. At the root of that strength is her absolute willingness to be completely vulnerable.

• 8:02Speaker 02

It's very sweet. Yeah, that's, it's so surreal to, I mean, she's like a hero of mine. So to have a relationship with her and also to have her say such kind things, like, that's, yeah, it's very surreal. But I don't remember, she never told me that she had seen me on The Americans when I was little. So I think I remember reading that and being like, what is she talking about?

• 8:23Josh Horowitz?

  She's watching closely.

• 8:25Speaker 02

  Yeah, she is.

• 8:25Josh Horowitz?

You registered. And now you have an unusual kind of connection in that you are doing this play very soon.

• 8:31Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 8:31Josh Horowitz?

That has a connection to The Crucible. That she, of course, the wonderful film adaptation, did you talk to her about that at all? Have you prepared notes?

• 8:39Speaker 02

I didn't get the chance to talk to her about that.

• 8:43Speaker 02

But I recently rewatched her as Abigail in The Crucible. Such a great movie. And she's so amazing in it. But yeah, no, I wish I would have gotten to tell her a little bit about it, but hopefully she'll come and see it. I think she'll like it.

• 8:59Josh Horowitz?

She, she did say she's excited to come see it.

• 9:01Speaker 02

  Okay, good.

• 9:02Josh Horowitz?

Are you gonna be nervous? Do you like to know who's in the audience?

• 9:04Speaker 02

I don't really know yet. I guess we'll have a trial and error and see.

• 9:09Josh Horowitz?

Well, you've done this before, but this is a-

• 9:10Speaker 02

  I was so young, though.

• 9:11Josh Horowitz?

  Right, right.

• 9:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:14Speaker 02

  Maybe I would, I don't, it depends who's coming.

• 9:16Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 9:18Josh Horowitz?

Fair enough. Alright, so let's get into a little Odessa, then we'll circle around to a lot of other things. But uh, so you just came from South By?

• 9:23Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 9:24Josh Horowitz?

  First South By or?

• 9:25Speaker 02

  First South By, yeah.

• 9:26Josh Horowitz?

How was the experience? You were in and out, but that's a, that's a cool festival. There's a lot of good vibes.

• 9:30Speaker 02

Really cool. There's a lot going on, because it's music too and film. Yeah. It's really cool. I was born in Texas too, so grew up going to Austin.

• 9:37Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 9:38Speaker 02

So it was good to be back in that city.

• 9:40Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. Is um, friends and family come out? I, Texas is a rather large state, so I don't know where you were born is pretty far from Austin or not?

• 9:46Speaker 02

Yeah, it's like two hours away.

• 9:48Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 9:48Speaker 02

So, and I wasn't there for long enough to see anyone, but my mom came with me.

• 9:54Josh Horowitz?

  Nice.

• 9:54Speaker 02

Um, which was so nice because she hasn't really gotten to come to a lot of events with me since I turned eighteen. Um, but yeah, it was good to have her there.

• 10:04Josh Horowitz?

Do you get nervous seeing your own work when you know friends or family are in the theater?

• 10:09Speaker 02

Yes. Yeah, she had seen the movie before. I took her to see it. She was super excited about this one because she loves it when I sing. So she was, this is like her ultimate dream. Um, but yeah, I sat through it with her again at South By because she wanted to see it again.

• 10:26Josh Horowitz?

Amazing. So okay, talk to me, this is, okay, it's, this is a hard one to explain because no one makes movies like this.

• 10:31Speaker 02

  No.

• 10:32Josh Horowitz?

This is a crazy movie in the best possible way. Congratulations for just like getting this done, making this thing.

• 10:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 10:37Josh Horowitz?

Um, it's a big swing. I always love big swings. Did you first encounter this just reading it? And like, how does it read? Because it is such a visual, oral experience. I'm curious.

• 10:47Speaker 02

Yeah, well, I was familiar with Jeremy's work because I love patty cakes so much.

• 10:51Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 10:52Speaker 02

Um, and then the script was sent to me. And I read the script before I listened to some of the demos that somehow I got my hands on. I wasn't supposed to be sent the demos, but I was and got like a sneak peek at them. Um, but I read the script and it is so ambitious and wild, but for some reason, when I was reading it, I saw it and like seeing the mood board and everything and just kind of getting into Jeremy's head.

• 11:21Speaker 02

Yeah, something clicked for me, or even just the tagline itself being like post-apocalyptic rock opera.

• 11:29Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. You're either gonna go for that, or you're gonna run away from it. You're either gonna run to it, or run away.

• 11:33Speaker 02

Let's do it. Like, they're actually making this? Like, okay, yeah.

• 11:36Josh Horowitz?

So what are the kind of inspirations or things you talked to Jeremy or in the mood board? I'm curious, like, do you? I don't know, are other films referenced? Are other media referenced, or?

• 11:45Speaker 02

Yeah, a little. There wasn't actually any specific thing referenced that I can remember, but I remember, like, looking at it and like, oh, this is very like Mad Max.

• 11:53Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 11:54Speaker 02

Um, like Blade Runner meets Romeo and Juliet, stuff like that. This is, this is very interesting.

• 12:01Josh Horowitz?

Rocky Horror thrown in, I don't know.

• 12:02Speaker 02

Exactly, yeah. And she sings, and I don't know. Um, but yeah, once I talked to Jeremy a little bit more, he kind of gave me some of his musical references. And we kind of started to craft Odessa. Um, and so we looked at a lot of, like, old Bob Dylan interviews, or Tom Waits interviews, and PJ Harvey performing, um, and just like pulled bits and pieces from them.

• 12:29Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 12:30Speaker 02

  And, yeah.

• 12:32Josh Horowitz?

  Out came Odessa.

• 12:33Speaker 02

  It became Odessa.

• 12:35Josh Horowitz?

So where were you at? Give me the timeline of where you were at, like, in terms of The Stranger Things of it all, which obviously takes up a lot of time.

• 12:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:42Josh Horowitz?

Um, somehow, I mean, it's, it's kind of a miracle all you guys have found so many great opportunities in between Stranger Things, because it, it's, it's a time suck in the best possible way. So was this between four and five, or?

• 12:53Speaker 02

This was between four and five.

• 12:54Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 12:55Speaker 02

Right before the strike, too. It was like that summer leading up to, um, that. And I think, I, I, it was always the plan that I would go straight from Odessa to Stranger Things, but then, yeah, the strike happened, so, yeah.

• 13:09Josh Horowitz?

And then, and coming off of four, obviously, I mean, four, huge season for you. Um, and not only that, but I would imagine gives you more standing in in terms of kind of the parts that you're presented with. So was this kind of like a this does seem like a transition point where like you get to be the lead. Like this movie doesn't happen frankly without you in the lead. Maybe they can find someone else, but it's but it's a short list of young actors that can get something like this green lit.

• 13:36Speaker 02

Yeah, I I guess, yeah, that having season four definitely helped. But it was like a huge learning curve for me to just be on set every day and like lead a film. And how do you do that as a twenty two year old young actress?

• 13:55Speaker 02

But I definitely was like willing to take that on, especially for something like this where it's just it's so fun.

• 14:03Speaker 02

So, yeah, I think it was good timing and it felt like the right move to do the right challenge to accept.

• 14:10Josh Horowitz?

And you're shooting this in Croatia, by the way.

• 14:12Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 14:13Josh Horowitz?

So I would imagine family isn't necessarily with you.

• 14:16Speaker 02

  No, family, no.

• 14:17Josh Horowitz?

So like in a way, and I remember we we talked about the whale at the time and you talked a little bit about like in some ways, the advantage of the whale too was kind of like being on your own. It kind of like helped with the character.

• 14:27Speaker 02

  Right.

• 14:28Josh Horowitz?

And I would imagine in a different way, this this like this focuses you up. You're there for a reason like you you don't have distractions. You're like on your own.

• 14:35Speaker 02

Yeah, you had to kind of lock in, which was good. Yeah, and we weren't like when they said Croatia, it was kind of imagining like a beautiful coastline and like summer in Croatia. But we were in Zagreb, which is not the coast.

• 14:50Josh Horowitz?

  You've learned the lesson.

• 14:52Speaker 02

It's like, oh, OK. But that was good because it was that's what the this universe that we were building kind of needed that. Because it was like, where am I?

• 15:04Speaker 02

But yeah, definitely isolating. But I think I I also work best under that kind of isolation.

• 15:10Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, so obviously, one of the most exciting aspects of this is to hear you sing and sing so well. You like nail this, it's amazing.

• 15:17Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 15:19Josh Horowitz?

And I found this really interesting in going back like again, you have a lot of history on stage, singing as a much younger person. Annie on Broadway and you and you have you had some interesting things to say in another interview about singing way back when. Because you talked about having panic attacks when you were a kid and saying that I think the quote was singing became the worst thing ever. I was terrified by it and that you essentially kind of gave it up.

• 15:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:44Josh Horowitz?

As a kid, so. I mean, for a number of reasons, then, this is a huge moment, I would imagine. Had you been, I don't know, like, how did you get to the place where you were ready to kind of like, go back and really jump at first?

• 15:58Speaker 02

I was really nervous and apprehensive about it at first.

• 16:05Speaker 02

But something about like the songs and it being completely original.

• 16:11Speaker 02

I think that was intriguing to me and like felt safer. That I would really be able to just kind of like, find Odessa's voice and do it through that and disassociate a little bit.

• 16:23Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 16:25Speaker 02

But so I, I think my first like audition for it was I, I was kind of unprompted, but I just like took a video of myself playing one of the songs and singing it. Um, and sent it to Jeremy. And I remember sending that and being like, ah, God, like, ah, why did I do that? Like, I, I don't know if I'm actually ready to do this or ready to take this on. But I think like it being, like I said, it being new, having time in the studio beforehand and time with my vocal coach, who's amazing, his name's Chris York. He really helped me become comfortable in my voice. And it, yeah, I got to like shift gears a little bit in terms of my relationship with singing.

• 17:09Speaker 02

I'm not ready to perform live anytime soon, have no desire to do that, but.

• 17:13Josh Horowitz?

Under the right circumstances, the right prep.

• 17:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:15Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 17:16Speaker 02

And there were character too, I think, that just like freed me up where it's like, it's not really me, it's my voice, but it's. Yeah, I don't, I don't know if you'll see me singing again anytime soon. I'm like, all right, there you go.

• 17:26Josh Horowitz?

  Not gonna be greedy.

• 17:27Speaker 02

  That's what you get.

• 17:28Josh Horowitz?

On your own time. I mean, not to go back to what was a difficult time, but that's really telling. I mean, that must have been a moment when you're a kid.

• 17:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:35Josh Horowitz?

In this wonderful. Huge moment to go through that. Like, did panic attacks, was that kind of like a one off? Or did that kind of continue in different ways throughout your life after that experience?

• 17:46Speaker 02

It really was kind of like, um, just with singing. And after that happened, like, the first couple of times, it just became, every single time I would sing in public, it felt really horrible and that panic would rise up again. And so, as like a young kid, naturally, I'm just gonna avoid that situation at all costs. So I would sing, like, if I was with groups of people or, um, around my family, but

• 18:12Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 18:13Speaker 02

I really just kind of like wrote that off as part of like my skill set, because it wasn't something I wanted to share anymore. But it continued to be like such a huge part of my life. And I love to sing. Um, sharing it is another story, but I'm happy that I was able to do it for this, at least once.

• 18:31Josh Horowitz?

You, you did pop up. I had a great conversation with My Hawk recently. She loves you also.

• 18:37Speaker 02

  Love Maya.

• 18:39Josh Horowitz?

And you obviously ended up on her album, singing some backup vocals.

• 18:41Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah, I did, wow.

• 18:43Josh Horowitz?

So how did that, how did that happen? Is that just like friends hanging out, being like, hey, you wanna?

• 18:47Speaker 02

Yeah, um, Maya and I, like, we were roommates for like most of Stranger Things. So we're very close and she's one of the few people that had heard me sing a little bit.

• 18:59Speaker 02

And when she was recording her album, she was like, are you in the city? Like, come stop by the studio and do harmonies if you want. And I was like, alright, I'll do that. And I had also been recording for Odessa too, like, so I was used to that.

• 19:13Josh Horowitz?

You were in that headspace, yeah, yeah.

• 19:13Speaker 02

Yeah, so that was, that was awesome. I love listening to those songs and I love singing with Maya.

• 19:19Josh Horowitz?

Not a backup yet on the Taylor Swift records, though.

• 19:22Speaker 02

  No.

• 19:22Josh Horowitz?

Just an actor for hire for Taylor, as of now.

• 19:25Speaker 02

  Right, right, yeah.

• 19:28Josh Horowitz?

Since that relationship, do you at least get like VIP treatment at the concerts? Did you go see her last tour?

• 19:32Speaker 02

Oh, I got to see her at, um, her last stop in LA, like, for the first leg of her tour.

• 19:39Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 19:39Speaker 02

But it was before her last album came out. So I didn't get to see all the new stuff she added. But, I mean, what, did you get to see it?

• 19:47Josh Horowitz?

I did, not in person, sadly.

• 19:48Speaker 02

You didn't get to see it?

• 19:49Josh Horowitz?

No, I feel left out of the pop culture zeitgeist. I mean, I've seen the film and everything, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 19:55Speaker 02

It's, it's intense, it's amazing. Like, I couldn't believe it was three hours.

• 20:01Speaker 02

Yeah, she's insane. Yeah, she's amazing.

• 20:03Josh Horowitz?

  She's next level.

If I had a dollar for everybody in my life who's benefited from therapy, I would be a very, very rich man. Therapy has certainly helped me, especially when I was a confused teenager. And thankfully, that's not a shameful thing to say anymore, right? It's okay to seek help and need help and talk about it. We're all doing our best. We're just trying to get by, right, guys? Unfortunately, the reality is that getting help is still harder than it should be. That's why I'm thrilled always to have Rula as a sponsor of Happy Say Confuse, because it's very obvious to me that online therapy should be both accessible and affordable for everybody. So let's make it easy for anybody who wants help to get help. That's where Rula comes in. Here's the thing a lot of online therapy platforms don't actually talk about. Most don't take insurance.

• 20:56Josh Horowitz?

That means you're either paying out of pocket or signing up for some very expensive monthly subscription. Rula does it all differently. They work with over 120 insurance plans, so the average copay, I can't get over this, it's just 15 bucks a session. So basically, two of your lattes, okay? A pretty good deal, if you ask me. That means you can get real therapy from a licensed professional without breaking the bank. And Rula doesn't just set you up and leave you alone. They give you that therapist, and then they're along the way, the whole journey with you to make sure your care is working for you and you're actually making progress, hitting your goals. This can all happen right away, guys. With Rula, appointments are often available as soon as tomorrow. There are no wait lists. There's no frustrating back and forth. They make it easy. Thousands of people are already using Rula

• 23:39Josh Horowitz?

Okay, so since we have a little bit of time, let's go back even further back before the Annie years, et cetera. Growing up in Texas, so is there... It sounds like... One of your brothers you share like a love of the arts with, right? Did you, were your parents surprised by like these two kids that seemed kind of like different than the rest, different than them in terms of love of the arts? Like, did you fit in?

• 24:00Speaker 02

Yeah, if they were surprised, they didn't show it. They just kind of like.

• 24:04Josh Horowitz?

  They went with the flow?

• 24:05Speaker 02

Yeah, they went with the flow. And I mean, our house was always so crazy. We, I'm one of five kids.

• 24:10Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 24:11Speaker 02

Um, so everyone was always doing something different. And for Mitchell and I, it was just like creating characters and skits and stuff and doing what like playing make believe as all kids do, but just kind of taking it to like another level at some points.

• 24:27Josh Horowitz?

It's interesting because you don't read to me as like big theater kid energy. I've talked to a lot of actors that were theater kids that like it never goes away. And it's like they are

• 24:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:36Josh Horowitz?

on. And girl, you have that side of you. But you're suppressing it for me and most of the world. It's like where, like, were you, it sounds like you did have theater kid energy as a kid.

• 24:46Speaker 02

Big time, big time. I was like insufferable. Um, but yeah, just like always singing and just obsessed with musical theater. And yeah, that, that, that didn't go anywhere. Um, but now I'm just very selective with who I show like my theater kid side to.

• 25:04Josh Horowitz?

So it's there, it comes out in certain situations?

• 25:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:07Josh Horowitz?

And how does it manifest? What does that mean? Is that just like getting up and?

• 25:10Speaker 02

It could be a, it could be an impromptu performance.

• 25:13Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 25:13Speaker 02

It could be a time step here and there.

• 25:16Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 25:16Speaker 02

  Um, yeah.

• 25:18Josh Horowitz?

Practicing a dance move when you walked in a new one you just learned.

• 25:20Speaker 02

Wow, you just exposed me. Yeah.

• 25:22Josh Horowitz?

  Sorry.

• 25:23Speaker 02

No, that's okay. I was practicing a dance move about fifteen minutes ago. Yeah.

• 25:28Josh Horowitz?

Um, was Wicked a big one? I mean, Wicked is now the world's, but.

• 25:32Speaker 02

  Wicked, Wicked is everything.

• 25:35Josh Horowitz?

  It was, it is.

• 25:36Speaker 02

It was, it is, it always will be. That was kind of like what Mitchell and I would obsess over when we still lived in Texas. We would just watch like Tony performances and all the different bootlegs. Like, we loved like Ally Mazzie's Glenda and Megan Hiltie's Glenda. We'd just compare all of them and like

• 25:54Josh Horowitz?

Debate the pros and cons of each.

• 25:55Speaker 02

  Jackie Burns, Alfa Bud. Yeah.

• 25:58Josh Horowitz?

How many times have you seen the film?

• 26:00Speaker 02

I've seen the film three times.

• 26:02Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 26:05Speaker 02

  Three times.

• 26:06Josh Horowitz?

  Won't be the last, though.

• 26:07Speaker 02

No, no, no. There will be more.

• 26:08Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 26:08Speaker 02

  I'm obsessed. I love it.

• 26:10Josh Horowitz?

Oh, my gosh. Were you more of a Glinda or alphabet? Did you ever perform a version?

• 26:14Speaker 02

Um, as a child, I was, I was an Alphaba. Well, we kind of like went back and forth, Mitchell and I, between like who we would play.

• 26:24Josh Horowitz?

It's like true West. You switch parts every few weeks.

• 26:25Speaker 02

Yeah, it depended on his mood. Like if he was, he was like, okay, now you need to be Glinda for this song. Or for like, if it was, what if, what is this feeling? I think he was Glinda, I was Alphaba. And then also with Defying Gravity. But then other times, I don't know, just change.

• 26:41Josh Horowitz?

Somewhere in the Sink family vault, there is footage, I would imagine, if you're performing.

• 26:46Speaker 02

  There's footage. There's footage.

• 26:46Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 26:47Speaker 02

Not of Wicked. I couldn't find any Wicked.

• 26:51Speaker 02

But there's definitely, definitely some footage.

• 26:54Josh Horowitz?

You're like, after this, I need to make sure it is locked up.

• 26:57Speaker 02

Yeah, I'm like, where is it?

• 26:58Josh Horowitz?

It needs to be secured. Secure facility. When, okay, so when does, when do you move? And does the family come with you as a kid? Like, because that's a big moment till I come to, I think, Jersey, right? You guys moved to Jersey at first?

• 27:10Speaker 02

Yes. We, well, basically, like, when Mitchell and I, we had booked Broadway shows. He was in Matilda, I was in Annie. He also did Elf the Musical. So we both were just kind of working.

• 27:24Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 27:24Speaker 02

And the contracts kept on like extending.

• 27:28Speaker 02

So my mom and my little sister, who was probably like two at the time, they were always with us.

• 27:34Josh Horowitz?

  Got it.

• 27:34Speaker 02

And we did that for like a year where my like family, the rest of my family was in Texas and would come and visit. But like, we were just in New York.

• 27:41Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 27:42Speaker 02

And then after that year or so, it was decided that we would just move. And my dad just kind of like looked around for jobs. He's a teacher.

• 27:52Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 27:52Speaker 02

Found one at this, this town in New Jersey. And we kind of settled down there. And now my family's still there.

• 27:59Josh Horowitz?

So I would imagine, like, in retrospect, maybe as a kid, it does or doesn't register. But like, I mean, the sacrifice and the big leap that your family as a whole took for you and Mitchell.

• 28:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:08Josh Horowitz?

  It's kind of amazing.

• 28:09Speaker 02

It's huge. And it was never with the intention of like... Like, oh, this is gonna go somewhere and they're gonna be like rot. Like, it was just kinda like, I guess this is what we do.

• 28:19Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 28:19Speaker 02

And I think, I come from a big sports family too.

• 28:22Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 28:22Speaker 02

So it was like that kind of mentality of like, oh, like, yeah, your child is doing well, then like, yeah, you support them and um, want them on like the best team possible, like the best fit.

• 28:34Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 28:35Speaker 02

I'm like really embarrassed that I made like the sports analogy.

• 28:37Josh Horowitz?

It's in your blood, you can't help it. You can't. There were some Friday Night Lights vibes or something I felt in the, in the childhood, I would imagine.

• 28:44Speaker 02

Totally. That was, that was it.

• 28:46Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 28:46Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:47Josh Horowitz?

Um, okay, so jumping ahead a little bit, so we're gonna jump all the way to Stranger Things, but I guess before Stranger Things happens, like where were you at? Like, so you're coming off of theater.

• 28:56Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 28:56Josh Horowitz?

What were you, I don't know, were you going for a certain kind of role repeatedly in television and film?

• 29:02Speaker 02

No, I mean, I just kind of remember like auditioning here and there after I finished the second Broadway show that I did. It was like thirteen, I think. So I went to eighth grade and then pretty much all of eighth grade and would just audition for things here and there, but honestly just loved being in school and having that experience. Um, cause I hadn't had that in a while.

• 29:23Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 29:24Speaker 02

Um, but then, yeah, would send in self tapes for things and like do like commercials here and there, like a movie or whatever. And then Stranger Things came along and I was like, okay.

• 29:37Josh Horowitz?

  This.

• 29:37Speaker 02

  Like I, I, yeah.

• 29:39Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 29:39Speaker 02

  It feels right.

• 29:40Josh Horowitz?

Do you remember the moment you got it? Like they actually officially told you of course, and that's a moment.

• 29:43Speaker 02

Yeah, that was a huge moment. It was just like complete shock.

• 29:47Josh Horowitz?

  Phone call, Zoom?

• 29:48Speaker 02

Phone call from Matt and Ross. Yeah.

• 29:51Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah. Crying, mom, everybody like?

• 29:55Speaker 02

No crying from me, just like a big smile and yeah. And, but my brother did cry, Mitchell did cry.

• 30:03Josh Horowitz?

I mean, knowing your life is changing, but even in retrospect, you probably didn't even. Couldn't intellectualize how much your life was gonna change.

• 30:09Speaker 02

No, no. I knew it was a big deal, but I was mostly just kind of excited to, like, be able to work on something for that long and like know that like, oh, I get to act with these people, these this cast who like they all seem so amazing. And that was the most exciting part. But and then obviously like, whoa, I get to act more. Like, this is really good for my career. But definitely a big realization to have at fourteen.

• 30:37Josh Horowitz?

And and how quickly does, because you joined season two, the excitement of joining, and then the first couple of days, I would imagine, or weeks or months, I don't even know how long it takes to kind of like, this is new. This is like a different, this is a, the scale is gigantic. These folks know each other. They're lovely, but they do know each other. They have that vibe. I don't know, like, when do you kind of like feel part of the family?

• 30:59Speaker 02

I mean, I immediately felt like so welcomed by the cast. I worked mostly with like the boys in in season two, and they just like, yeah, they made me feel so at home and like they genuinely like wanted me there. Still, I think there was that like new kid mentality that I would always have, but never in regards to like my friendships with them. Like, that is always so solid and like one of the best parts of being on Stranger Things. And then, yeah, but just kind of like finding like my character's place in the show and wondering like, oh, do people, do people like her? Or is this gonna be received well?

• 31:43Speaker 02

Am I gonna be like welcomed by the fandom? That was kind of maybe the like trickier

• 31:49Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 31:50Speaker 02

  area to navigate.

• 31:51Josh Horowitz?

And then, I mean, wonderful shock. By the time season four happens, you have this amazing season, like this like, like, that doesn't happen, as you well know.

• 32:00Speaker 02

  No.

• 32:01Josh Horowitz?

It's a huge ensemble and what the Duffers are able to do to serve all of them so well is amazing. But again, a newish character coming in season two. I don't know, did you, did they kind of like sit you down and talk about season four? Like, did you realize kind of like, how special that season could potentially be for Max and you?

• 32:18Speaker 02

I was like, yeah, I had gotten some hints as to where season four was going from the Duffers and.

• 32:29Speaker 02

I was just like really like, yeah, this game for it, I guess. And then never really realized like the full scope of it.

• 32:37Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 32:38Speaker 02

Until seeing it and seeing how people responded to it. At the time, it was just like, oh, awesome. Like, this is such a great plotline. And yeah, this is, I don't know.

• 32:48Josh Horowitz?

Do you remember the first time you saw, like, for instance, episode four and see the music, seeing Running Up That Hill? And seeing the effects and seeing it all together was, that's a goosebump moment for anybody that's already become like an all-timer television moment. See the episode of television. Do you distinctly remember seeing like that and registering like, oh, whether I'm in it or not, this is, this is really well done. This is good.

• 33:10Speaker 02

It was so well done. Um, yeah, I remember finally seeing it. I watched it with my family just at home. And everyone was kind of just like, my whole family was just like speechless. And they're like, whoa. And for me, I was like, whoa, too. Like, this is so cool. But also, everything in that sequence was shot like months apart, like, and so scattered throughout the year. So seeing it all come together in that one episode, it was like, oh, I don't know how, like, I don't even remember filming that part, or that looks like this. And that's always the exciting part about Stranger Things, too, is like, when all the pieces come together, you're like, oh, right, this is the show that we're doing. This is what it looks like.

• 33:53Josh Horowitz?

So does, does life change after that in combination with The Whale? Because again, this also coincides, obviously, timeline-wise, with a very strange time in history where like, a lot of this is lockdown, COVID era. So like, you're kind of like a scent through celebrity kind of coincides with, you know, a lot of times where people aren't out and about too much.

• 34:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:12Josh Horowitz?

So kind, I don't know, like, when, when was the transition point for you that you kind of felt like, oh, there's a lot more, I feel eyes on me more in day-to-day life?

• 34:23Speaker 02

I don't know. I mean, ever since I was on, like, got on Stranger Things, there was always that element to it.

• 34:31Speaker 02

But I guess it was when, like, The Whale happened and season four, like, felt like, oh, maybe there's like, there's stuff beyond the show, too.

• 34:41Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 34:43Speaker 02

But I don't know if I really felt like that much of a shift, or if I did, it just wasn't.

• 34:48Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 34:48Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 34:49Josh Horowitz?

  This is good.

• 34:49Speaker 02

It happened slowly and like, yeah.

• 34:52Josh Horowitz?

That means your head's in the game.

• 34:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:54Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. I mean, do you, do you have like a, so I had a really interesting, again, of Maya, this interesting conversation that kind of went everywhere because I think it really resonated with people. Where, where she talked very openly about how like casting, for instance, um sadly is often influenced by someone's Instagram followers and like.

• 35:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:10Josh Horowitz?

Right? And I think that caught people off the guard, but that's, that's like a reality. And I would imagine for you as, you know, a young woman, like there, there must be a push poll in terms of like social media. Like every peer of yours lives and breathes on Instagram and TikTok.

• 35:26Speaker 02

  Right.

• 35:27Josh Horowitz?

And for you though, it's a little bit, there's something different about in- interacting and engaging with social media.

• 35:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:32Josh Horowitz?

I guess just give me a sense of sort of like, I don't know, where you sit with navigating that world.

• 35:38Speaker 02

Um, I would say like, I'm pretty proud of like the balance that I have with it.

• 35:42Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 35:42Speaker 02

Um, and it took a while to figure out, but yeah, having kind of, I don't know, that uh, that influx of attention and like followers at that young age, um, it was maybe like a bit jarring for me.

• 35:59Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 36:00Speaker 02

So I kind of like had a bit of a wall up with social media, which I think is like a healthy place to be.

• 36:05Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 36:06Speaker 02

Um, and then now I'm at a point where it's like, I won't have the app on my phone.

• 36:10Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 36:10Speaker 02

But then when I need to post something or see what like fans are saying and yeah, then I will do, they'll download it.

• 36:17Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 36:17Speaker 02

But it's not like an everyday thing, which we think is good.

• 36:21Josh Horowitz?

Does that feel like, I mean, again, it's like, I don't know, I'm not advocating that you get on the app. Don't get on the app. I don't know, anyone should, if I could get off of it, I would too. But like, I don't know, like, again, in your peer group, I would imagine everybody you know is kind of more in their phones than you are then.

• 36:36Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 36:37Josh Horowitz?

Or no, but give me hope. Are they not? That's great.

• 36:39Speaker 02

No, not like, I'm thinking about the people I'm around now and.

• 36:42Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 36:43Speaker 02

  No, I don't think so.

• 36:44Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 36:45Speaker 02

  But I also don't know. I can't say like, cause I can't, I don't know what they're posting.

• 36:50Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 36:51Speaker 02

  So I don't, hmm.

• 36:52Josh Horowitz?

And have you felt like what Maya's felt? Like, do you even hear that about kind of like, oh, a certain number of followers equates this in the, in this tree? Like, is there that unspoken or spoken thing that, that you are aware of? Of advancing a career through.

• 37:05Speaker 02

Honestly, no, I, yeah. No, I'm not, I think it definitely is a thing. I'm not denying that, but like,

• 37:15Speaker 02

it's just not something I find important, because I don't think it should be important.

• 37:20Josh Horowitz?

Don't give it the space. No, I hear you. Okay, back to Stranger Things. Here's the uncomfortable part where we talk about season five and you say nothing, but just overall experiences. I mean, because now that you guys have wrapped and we're starting to talk to all the actors, we're hearing a little bit of sort of just what it was. I mean, again, it's a long shoot.

• 37:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 37:37Josh Horowitz?

So like, did it kind of, did emotion build throughout? Because I remember talking to Millie like, early on, and she's like, I'm not emotional yet. I know I'll get there.

• 37:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 37:45Josh Horowitz?

Was that kind of the vibe that it kind of like, the emotion kind of built into the last couple of weeks?

• 37:50Speaker 02

It did, it did. I think it was a really, it was a hard season to shoot. And like, our crew just worked so hard every single day. Us as actors, like, we're not there every day, but the crew was for that entire year and like,

• 38:06Speaker 02

with that and with the material that we're working with, it's such a big show. It's like, yeah, you go up and down between, your emotions just kind of shift a lot, but definitely we were all on the same page in that like final push in the last month where it's like, this is hard, this has been a tough year, but oh my God, I don't want it to end.

• 38:25Josh Horowitz?

So like, what are the emotional points for you? Because I would imagine there's like, it's the final table read, it's the final day, it's Sadie getting wrapped, it's the wrap party, it's like you have these series of goodbyes and then you're gonna have another four months of press when we see each other.

• 38:39Speaker 02

  Yes, yes, exactly.

• 38:42Speaker 02

I mean, I think there was, I was definitely just like very numb to it at first, and then the table read hit. And I was just like, I was crying after that, crying that morning with Maya in the car and like, we're just like, we're like, what's going on? What's happening? Why, why is it just hitting in this moment? But I think something about like, knowing what the end was and seeing like end series on the script was so, it was so much. But then we were fine after because we had like months to go.

• 39:13Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 39:13Speaker 02

And then the final day happened and it's like, oh. This feels so, yeah. It's difficult, for sure.

• 39:21Josh Horowitz?

Is there anybody you're excited for in terms of like, again, we're not gonna say specifics, but like, a fellow actor that we're gonna get to see shine in this season?

• 39:31Speaker 02

  Oh, I mean, honestly, just...

• 39:37Speaker 02

It's hard to like, I think everyone did such an incredible job, like, truly, and I think the overall thing I'll say is just, I think this is the season where you really get to see all of the, you know, former child actors as adult actors, and the Duffers have always done a great job of like, meeting us where we're at.

• 39:58Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 39:58Speaker 02

And with the material and just how much everyone has grown as performers on this, in this cast, there's some really like, amazing performances and arcs, and I'm just like, yeah, I'm so proud of everyone.

• 40:14Josh Horowitz?

I do hope they show, they show like, the last episode or two on the big screen, so we can see it.

• 40:18Speaker 02

  Me too, right?

• 40:19Josh Horowitz?

I mean, I can only imagine, the last couple of seasons, it's just the production value goes up and up, and it's film quality, so...

• 40:26Speaker 02

They should at least do like, some screenings of it or something.

• 40:29Josh Horowitz?

  Yes.

• 40:30Speaker 02

Come on, it's been ten years.

• 41:42Josh Horowitz?

We talked a little bit about this, but let's come back to the play because that's where 25% of your brain is right now.

• 41:48Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 41:48Josh Horowitz?

And I'm going to release the other 75% soon, I promise. John Proctor is the villain. This is, so it's a new play. It's not been mounted on Broadway at least, yes?

• 41:57Speaker 02

  Not on Broadway, no.

• 41:58Josh Horowitz?

So was this just kind of like on the list like, okay, it's time. I want to get back on the stage and then you found this or this material came? Like what was, how did this one come around?

• 42:08Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, I'd always like talked about wanting to do a play after the fifth season ended. But I wasn't sure which one and it wasn't like I was like actively on the hunt for a play. But this one just kind of was sent to me by my agents and Kimberly Bellflower is the playwright, who's incredible. And I tore through it. I felt like I'd never really read a play like it before that like so accurately depicted teenagers or, you know, Gen Z.

• 42:42Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 42:42Speaker 02

And while also just like integrating these amazing, like really profound themes. And it just felt right, like the character felt right. And I was so excited, but that was like two years ago when I read it.

• 42:58Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 43:00Speaker 02

And so there was definitely moments of like, is this ever going to happen? Like we did a workshop of it and it went amazing and hearing it out loud, it just kind of solidified that, that need to do it again and bring it to Broadway, hopefully or wherever. But yeah, it takes a lot to get a Broadway show up and.

• 43:16Josh Horowitz?

  So we're here.

• 43:17Speaker 02

Yeah, but we found a home at the Booth Theater, which is insane. And yeah, like I was saying, we just moved in yesterday.

• 43:23Josh Horowitz?

  So funny? It's a comedy?

• 43:26Speaker 02

  Yes, it is funny.

• 43:27Josh Horowitz?

That's going to be fun to experience that kind of energy on a stage.

• 43:31Speaker 02

Yeah, I've never, yeah, I've never really had to tap into that before. It's a comedy, but then, you know, it's many other things as well, but it is very funny.

• 43:41Josh Horowitz?

So it, it takes place in the wake of the Me Too movement as I understand it and, and students that are kind of like recontextualizing, oh wait, is the crucible, is John Proctor necessarily a, a good guy? Which I'm a little sad because I do love the crucible. It might be my favorite place. It might be ruining the crucible for me.

• 43:57Speaker 02

No, not ruining it though, just like. Encouraging people to dig deeper and see something beyond the traditional, um, I don't know, idea of the show or what, you know, is traditionally taught in schools. So it'll make you love it even more.

• 44:13Josh Horowitz?

Okay, perfect, perfect. And so, yeah, the last time you were on stage, I think, was that the play with Helen Mirren way back?

• 44:18Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 44:19Josh Horowitz?

So back then, they were coming to see Helen, not to get you to, like, anxiety ridden. A lot of people are gonna be coming to see you, Sadie.

• 44:25Speaker 02

Which is crazy. It's insane. I, like, the theater, we were at the Schoenfeld for the audience, which is, like, two doors down from the Booth Theater.

• 44:33Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 44:33Speaker 02

So it's just insane to see, like, my name on a, on a marquee, like, that, that's been, like, the biggest pinch me moment.

• 44:39Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 44:40Speaker 02

That I've had in a, like, my whole career, honestly.

• 44:43Josh Horowitz?

Totally. Okay, so, um, I do want to mention a little bit more of The Whale before we wrap up, because I, that movie wrecks me. If you have a heart or soul, it wrecks you. Um, did that feel, I mean, well, it's not just like the end sequence, which I know you shot, I think, over three days.

• 44:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:00Josh Horowitz?

  Right?

• 45:02Josh Horowitz?

Like, do you run out of tears at a certain point? Like, that is such an emotional sequence. It's as emotional a sequence as I can recall in the last ten years of cinema. Um, how do you kind of, like, stay in that moment for as long as you have to?

• 45:14Speaker 02

It was a lot. It really was a lot. I, I was definitely, like, leading up to it, I was, um, questioning whether I could even do that. Like, I, I'd never had to, um, sustain that kind of emotion over so many days. Um, but at that point, like, it felt so earned for the character and...

• 45:35Josh Horowitz?

Did you shoot rather, like, in sequence? Like, were you kind of, like, or was that?

• 45:39Speaker 02

  Yeah, we shot in sequence.

• 45:40Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, that's good.

• 45:40Speaker 02

But, like, we just kind of, like, moved through the angles, moved through the scene.

• 45:43Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 45:44Speaker 02

Um, and, yeah, that emotional stamina from Brendan, also seeing that, he was super, like, encouraging and, like, just feeding off of, off of that was so helpful. I mean, he gave such an incredible performance. Um...

• 46:01Josh Horowitz?

It must have been also moving to go through that whole experience in the wake of it, like, to sit at Venice next to him.

• 46:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 46:07Josh Horowitz?

When the world kind of is like, we love you, Brendan, we've always loved you.

• 46:12Speaker 02

It's the best, yeah. He's like, he's, he's so amazing, so kind, and just genuinely that, you know, um, which is so rare to see, and I just, yeah, working with him, it's like gonna be one of the highlights of my career for forever.

• 46:32Josh Horowitz?

Alright, so looking ahead, after John Proctor, if the internet is to be believed, you are already Jean Grey in X-Men. I'm sure people have been asking you about this.

• 46:42Josh Horowitz?

Um, if I'm a betting man, should I put any money on this? What, where, where are we at, Sadie?

• 46:47Speaker 02

I mean, this is, this is news to me.

• 46:49Josh Horowitz?

  Is it news to you?

• 46:50Speaker 02

  This is news to me.

• 46:51Josh Horowitz?

  Really?

• 46:52Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 46:52Josh Horowitz?

You've never met, you've never talked to a Kevin Feige or a Marvel person about this character?

• 46:57Speaker 02

No, I can't, I, no, I have nothing to say about this.

• 47:02Speaker 02

The rumors are really cool, though.

• 47:04Josh Horowitz?

  It's a nice rumor.

• 47:05Speaker 02

  It's an awesome rumor.

• 47:06Josh Horowitz?

Do you know the, I mean, you, I assume, know that character?

• 47:09Speaker 02

Yeah, I know the character, yeah.

• 47:11Josh Horowitz?

  It's a good character.

• 47:12Speaker 02

It's a great character, so it was cool to read.

• 47:16Josh Horowitz?

Does the idea, if something like that, or something similar to that, I mean, that's a commitment also, like you sign on to be Jean Grey in X-Men, you're on and off the next ten years of your life, you're doing that.

• 47:25Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 47:26Josh Horowitz?

Is that a consideration? Is that something that's intriguing, exciting for you at this juncture in your career?

• 47:31Speaker 02

Yeah, I think that's super exciting.

• 47:32Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 47:33Speaker 02

  Um, yeah.

• 47:35Josh Horowitz?

Hmm, we were so, we had a vibe going, and then suddenly, it's interesting. I don't know, it's just interesting. All I'm gonna say is, I'm gonna go back to this tape, and then I'm gonna decide if we're friends or not, based on if you're lying to me.

• 47:49Speaker 02

  We are friends.

• 47:50Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 47:53Josh Horowitz?

Um, so in terms of just general criteria going forward, what are you looking for? Like, okay, you're gonna be committed to this for a while on stage, that's where your head's at.

• 48:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:01Josh Horowitz?

But like, again, you're spoiled by the Duffers for over a series of years, you're spoiled by Darren Aronofsky. Something like Odessa, this kind of audacious piece of filmmaking. Um, I don't know, like, are you looking for filmmakers, for actors, for genre? Like, what's your team sync looking at and around?

• 48:18Speaker 02

Ooh, I just, I think what's interesting to me is kind of like building something from the ground up. Whether that's like a series or a movie, I, I think that's interesting to me, like, starting at like the very early stages of something. Um, but I'm very like story character driven.

• 48:36Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 48:37Speaker 02

Um, and love working with new filmmakers, but as long as it's like a story that I love and um, yeah, a character that I resonate with or a character that's different than what I've tried before. Um, I think that's the way to go, cause also like I'm so young, I still have so much to learn. And the more I can kind of like

• 48:59Speaker 02

  stretch and, and find new

• 49:03Speaker 02

new like ground to cover as a performer, I think it's the better.

• 49:07Josh Horowitz?

Were there any films or performances in the last year or two that really like inspired you that kind of?

• 49:13Speaker 02

  Um, oof.

• 49:16Speaker 02

Cate Blanchett in Tar, like, yeah.

• 49:18Josh Horowitz?

  That's maybe, yeah.

• 49:20Speaker 02

I just love her, I think, like she's.

• 49:21Josh Horowitz?

That movie sticks, sticks with you, it's mesmerizing.

• 49:24Speaker 02

But as far as like that, it's just like a strong female performance, like, yeah, I was really.

• 49:29Josh Horowitz?

  Shared space with Cate Blanchett?

• 49:30Speaker 02

I have shared space, I have, I've shared space.

• 49:34Josh Horowitz?

Are you able to suppress or kind of fangirl? Like, what's your, what's?

• 49:37Speaker 02

I ju- I think I just have such, um, like, respect for her.

• 49:41Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 49:42Speaker 02

  So, yeah.

• 49:43Josh Horowitz?

I just thought, she's in the new Steven Soderbergh movie, excellent, her and Michael Fassbender, come on, black bag, put it on your list.

• 49:50Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 49:50Josh Horowitz?

  They're both very good.

• 49:51Speaker 02

I mean, anything Kate does, um, sign me up.

• 49:53Josh Horowitz?

Um, okay, we're gonna wrap with this, it's the Happy Say Confuse Profoundly Random Questions, Sadie. Are you ready for this? This is the tough stuff.

• 50:00Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 50:00Josh Horowitz?

I thought the X-Men thing was tough, this is much tougher.

• 50:02Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 50:04Josh Horowitz?

  Dogs or cats?

• 50:06Speaker 02

  No.

• 50:08Josh Horowitz?

You don't have to get rid of one species.

• 50:10Speaker 02

  Okay, dogs, dogs.

• 50:12Josh Horowitz?

Do you have both? You have, you have, I know you have a very large dog.

• 50:15Speaker 02

Yes, like family dog, um, yeah, but I raised her, um, but yeah, Nora, she's great.

• 50:22Josh Horowitz?

What kind of dog is she?

• 50:23Speaker 02

  She's in Newfoundland.

• 50:25Josh Horowitz?

My dog is down the block, I'll bring her over, she's amazing, Lucy, she's the sweetest thing. Um, what do you collect?

• 50:32Speaker 02

  What do I collect?

• 50:33Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 50:37Josh Horowitz?

What are you hoarding secretly? What are you ashamed of? No, you don't have to be ashamed.

• 50:40Speaker 02

  Um, notebooks.

• 50:41Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 50:42Speaker 02

Notebooks that I don't even write in. But anytime I see a cute notebook, I will buy it. And so, yeah, I collect a lot of notebooks.

• 50:50Josh Horowitz?

  Are you a journaler?

• 50:51Speaker 02

  I do journal a lot.

• 50:52Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 50:52Speaker 02

But I'm buying so much, like, I can't keep up.

• 50:56Josh Horowitz?

Not enough is happening in my life.

• 50:58Speaker 02

I know, more stuff needs to happen.

• 51:01Josh Horowitz?

Are they tied to, like, experiences? Like, is there, like, the Odessa?

• 51:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:05Josh Horowitz?

  Volumes?

• 51:05Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. It depend, like, there's a different notebook for, like, every year, or, yeah, a chapter of my life. And then whenever, like, the winds shift, then I'll, like, get a new notebook, I guess. Um, but, yeah, I do have an Odessa one. I have it, like, dates back to, like, season three of Stranger Things, I think, so, yeah.

• 51:22Josh Horowitz?

And now you're in the John Proctor one, I assume.

• 51:24Speaker 02

  I am. It's striped.

• 51:28Josh Horowitz?

  Making a bold choice.

• 51:29Speaker 02

  It's got stripes on it.

• 51:30Josh Horowitz?

Okay, that's an exclusive, thank you.

• 51:33Josh Horowitz?

Do you have a favorite video game of all time?

• 51:35Speaker 02

  Ooh, I'm...

• 51:39Speaker 02

  I like...

• 51:44Speaker 02

  I'm going between, like...

• 51:49Speaker 02

  Mario Kart?

• 51:51Josh Horowitz?

For the record, this is the longest you've taken to answer a question.

• 51:53Speaker 02

  I know, it's hard, it's hard.

• 51:54Josh Horowitz?

This is the most important one. No, no, I don't, I have nowhere to be. It's okay.

• 51:56Speaker 02

I'm gonna go with, um, Smash Bros.

• 52:00Josh Horowitz?

  Yep, that's a popular one.

• 52:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:01Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 52:01Speaker 02

  Which is, you know...

• 52:02Josh Horowitz?

  Classic.

• 52:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:04Josh Horowitz?

What's the wallpaper on your phone?

• 52:06Speaker 02

It's a picture of me and my brother when we were, like, very little. Yeah.

• 52:11Josh Horowitz?

  Performing, or just hanging?

• 52:12Speaker 02

  No, just, like, just chilling.

• 52:15Josh Horowitz?

  Just chilling.

• 52:17Josh Horowitz?

Last actor you were mistaken for?

• 52:20Speaker 02

Oh, this is really funny. We, um, my cast went to go see The Outsiders, because Donnie Tamar directed it. And then as we were leaving the theater, um, someone stopped me and, like, wanted a picture. I was like, oh, yeah, so he took a picture. And then goes, you were so good. So I don't know who she thought I was in the Outsiders cast, but I was like, thank you.

• 52:39Josh Horowitz?

  Just accept the compliment.

• 52:40Speaker 02

I was flattered though, I'm like, yeah.

• 52:41Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, that was good.

• 52:42Speaker 02

That was, that was really great.

• 52:43Josh Horowitz?

  Killed it, right?

• 52:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:45Josh Horowitz?

Uh, what's the worst note a director has ever given you?

• 52:48Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 52:50Speaker 02

Anytime it's like, can you just like be like more, um,

• 52:55Speaker 02

sad or something like anything like really generic like that or like maybe, but not even that it's a bad note. It's just like, eh, okay.

• 53:03Josh Horowitz?

  All right.

• 53:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 53:04Josh Horowitz?

  Amp up the sadness.

• 53:05Speaker 02

But like when you get, when you give a note like that too, you know, it's like bad, but it's like, yeah.

• 53:09Josh Horowitz?

Okay. And in the spirit of happy second fuse, an actor who always makes you happy. You see them on screen, you're immediately in a better mood.

• 53:16Speaker 02

  Hmm.

• 53:23Speaker 02

  Kristen Wiig?

• 53:24Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 53:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 53:25Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 53:27Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 53:28Speaker 02

Anything she does, yeah, it's like her comedy is, it gets me.

• 53:32Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, I'm with you. Um, movie that makes you sad?

• 53:36Speaker 02

  Oh, um,

• 53:40Speaker 02

I watched Lion on a plane recently.

• 53:42Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 53:44Speaker 02

  And I cried a lot. I cried a lot.

• 53:46Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 53:47Speaker 02

That's the most recent movie that made me very, very sad.

• 53:49Josh Horowitz?

  Planes also.

• 53:50Speaker 02

The plane, it's the plane that really got me.

• 53:52Josh Horowitz?

  I mean, it's a sad movie.

• 53:53Speaker 02

  It is a sad movie.

• 53:54Josh Horowitz?

Sad movie, but yeah, I've, I've, I've said this before when asking these questions. Terms of Endearment, I made the mistake of watching.

• 53:59Speaker 02

  Oh, Terms of Endearment.

• 54:00Josh Horowitz?

On a plane and it was just like.

• 54:01Speaker 02

You knew what you were signing up for with that.

• 54:03Josh Horowitz?

Brought down the plane with my tears.

• 54:04Speaker 02

That's like almost too sad for me.

• 54:06Josh Horowitz?

It's a lot. Every time the music kicks in, it's too much. And finally, a food that makes you confused.

• 54:12Speaker 02

  Food that makes me confused?

• 54:15Josh Horowitz?

  You don't get it.

• 54:17Speaker 02

Um, certain kinds of, you know what? This is really specific. I've never tried it.

• 54:22Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 54:23Speaker 02

Buffalo like chicken pizza. Do you know what I'm talking about?

• 54:26Josh Horowitz?

  Of course. Yeah, yeah.

• 54:28Speaker 02

  I don't know what that's about.

• 54:29Josh Horowitz?

So is it the combo? It's like, have you had buffalo chicken and just not on a pizza? No, see, so if you have a buffalo chicken problem.

• 54:35Speaker 02

  Buffalo cauliflower.

• 54:36Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 54:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 54:37Josh Horowitz?

  So you used to.

• 54:38Speaker 02

But I know, so I know what that flavor is, but like. On a pizza? It's too many things.

• 54:44Josh Horowitz?

  It's a lot of things.

• 54:44Speaker 02

  Anything that's, yeah.

• 54:45Josh Horowitz?

  Keep it simple.

• 54:46Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 54:47Josh Horowitz?

That's Sadie Sink's advice for the day. Um, okay, that's the task for the fans of Sadie Sink. See Odessa, get your tickets to John Proctor's The Villain. And enjoy your pizza, just don't muck it up with buffalo chicken.

• 55:01Speaker 02

  Yeah, responsibly.

• 55:02Josh Horowitz?

Enjoy your pizza responsibly. That's our PSA for the day.

• 55:06Speaker 02

  And drink responsibly.

• 55:08Josh Horowitz?

  While we're at it.

• 55:09Speaker 02

  Yeah, might as well.

• 55:10Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, exactly. Okay, I'm very excited for this film. On the 20th, I think the same day you start rehearsals, you start the previews.

• 55:17Speaker 02

  You're right.

• 55:18Josh Horowitz?

  Just hit you?

• 55:19Speaker 02

  It just hit me.

• 55:20Josh Horowitz?

  Big day, March 20th.

• 55:22Speaker 02

  Choose one.

• 55:23Josh Horowitz?

See both. It's a busy day, it's a lot of Sadie in one day.

• 55:26Speaker 02

  Do a double screening.

• 55:27Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, that's how I'm gonna celebrate. I am gonna come to your play, I'm very excited for you.

• 55:30Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 55:31Josh Horowitz?

Congratulations on the film and the play and everything going on.

• 55:34Speaker 02

  Thank you so much.

• 55:36Speaker 04
