Now, more than ever, we need someone on our side. But Rob Whitman? Whitman's votes drove up costs, cut Medicaid, and risked 350,000 Virginians' health care to pay for tax breaks for himself and his donors. He's not on our side. Shannon Taylor will fight corruption, cut taxes, and bring down costs. This November, vote for Shannon Taylor. She's for us. Paid for by HMP, the HouseMajorityPac.com. • 0:54Caleb Hammer?

  Only f-?

• 0:55Speaker 05

  It is.

• 0:56Caleb Hammer?

  Oh!

• 0:56Speaker 05

  It is.

  The oh!

• 0:57Speaker 05

  Because I don't have only f-. I don't.

• 0:59Caleb Hammer?

I don't. Call him in the post-show while he confirm it.

• 1:01Speaker 05

His phone blew up, so card information-

• 1:03Caleb Hammer?

Oh, his phone blew up, so we can't call him? Get her on the phone.

• 1:18Speaker 05

Hi, my name is Ted. I am 31 years old. I am from Rexburg, Idaho. And this is Financial Audit.

• 1:25Caleb Hammer?

What's up, buddy? I've never heard of Rexburg, but thanks for coming down. What do you do for a living up there?

• 1:31Speaker 05

  I am a truck driver.

• 1:32Caleb Hammer?

Vroom, vroom, drive, drive. Love it.

• 1:34Speaker 05

  Vroom, vroom, drive, drive.

• 1:35Caleb Hammer?

That can be actually pretty lucrative, depending on, I think it's the long haul ones that really make the money these days, right? Well, how much you making?

• 1:42Speaker 05

Well, and that's what I do, is I do the long haul. Um, right now-

• 1:46Caleb Hammer?

  That's what we're making money.

• 1:47Speaker 05

Yeah, I'm making pretty good money. I just got a pretty decent-sized raise. Um, but I make 54 and 1/2 cents per mile with a 16 cent per diem. And I do about 10,000 miles per month.

• 2:01Caleb Hammer?

What's your typical month look like?

• 2:03Speaker 05

My typical month, I'm bringing in about $4,900 a month.

• 2:09Caleb Hammer?

  Okay, yeah.

• 2:11Speaker 05

  After taxes and 401K.

• 2:12Caleb Hammer?

  And everything?

• 2:12Speaker 05

  Yep, after 401K, taxes, it's about 49.

• 2:15Caleb Hammer?

  That's great, that's about $60,000. $60,000 a month.

• 2:22Caleb Hammer?

Or sixty thousand dollars a year net, that's not bad at all. Okay, cool.

• 2:27Speaker 05

And then I also am a Navy reservist.

• 2:30Caleb Hammer?

Oh, what are you bringing in with that?

• 2:32Speaker 05

Three hundred sixty dollars a month, but then they take out the healthcare for that, so it only feels like about sixty dollars a month.

• 2:39Caleb Hammer?

  Dang, really?

• 2:40Speaker 05

Yeah, but it's only weekend, so.

• 2:42Caleb Hammer?

But, but then you're not getting health insurance taken away, or well, taken out of your trucking pay?

• 2:47Speaker 05

  No, I.

• 2:48Caleb Hammer?

Cause you're not doubling up, okay?

• 2:49Speaker 05

  Not doubling.

• 2:50Caleb Hammer?

  So, what's going on, man?

• 2:52Speaker 05

So, I'm basically here to uh, talk about my finances. I have disagreements with my wife about the money and I'm just tired of fighting her on it and trying to make her understand.

• 3:06Caleb Hammer?

  Well, hold on.

• 3:09Caleb Hammer?

What were the fuck's a wife?

• 3:10Speaker 05

She is at home with the kids.

• 3:11Caleb Hammer?

  Oh, okay.

• 3:12Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 3:13Caleb Hammer?

Well, how long have you guys been, kids, okay? How long have you guys been married?

• 3:17Speaker 05

We've been married for seven years, uh, just last month.

• 3:20Caleb Hammer?

And how old are the kids?

• 3:21Speaker 05

They are three and a half years old.

• 3:23Caleb Hammer?

  Two, two?

• 3:24Speaker 05

  Twins.

• 3:24Caleb Hammer?

  Okay.

• 3:25Speaker 05

  We've got twins.

• 3:26Caleb Hammer?

Disagreements with your wife, so you come here, but she's not here, so what are we settling with these disagreements?

• 3:32Speaker 05

  So.

• 3:32Caleb Hammer?

I, I don't think this is the most productive marriage conversation when one party is here.

• 3:37Speaker 05

Right, well, I mean, cause I'm the spender when it comes to the finances, but she does a lot of pushback and I've tried to educate myself for the last couple of years on it, and she seems to fight me on every twist and turn when it comes to finances. Based off of my spending habits in the past, and so now I guess she has some reservations on that.

• 3:57Caleb Hammer?

Well, what does that look like? Are you guys just like endlessly fighting? What's happening?

• 4:01Speaker 05

  Sometimes, uh.

• 4:04Caleb Hammer?

Well, no, what does the situation look like? If this is what we're talking about today, what does it look like?

• 4:09Speaker 05

So, I'll bring up, hey, let's maybe try to consolidate our debts. Let's take out a ten thousand dollar loan, fifteen thousand dollar loan, maybe consolidate our debts into one monthly payment with a low APR. And she's like, I will not do a ten thousand dollar loan. We're gonna dig ourselves into debt. We're trying to dig ourselves out of debt.

• 4:25Caleb Hammer?

True. And have you changed your behavior that got you there in the first place, which a debt consolidation or something wouldn't necessarily do? Fun fact, have your spending, no you haven't, but have you?

• 4:37Speaker 05

  No.

• 4:38Caleb Hammer?

Okay, so why would that be the option? Sounds like wifey might be righty.

• 4:42Speaker 05

  Why?

• 4:42Speaker 05

Right. Well, because we are paying our bills. We are still paying our bills.

• 4:47Caleb Hammer?

Why don't have this conversation with her? Why are we, why am I doing it just to you? What are you trying to do?

• 4:52Speaker 05

Because I'm trying to educate her because I've been trying to do.

• 4:55Caleb Hammer?

Oh, you're trying to educate her?

• 4:56Speaker 05

  I am.

• 4:56Caleb Hammer?

You're the one that got you guys into debt. You're trying to educate her.

• 4:59Speaker 05

Yeah, but, okay, so I've started this journey 10 years ago, Caleb. 10 years ago, I started my debt.

• 5:05Caleb Hammer?

10 years of getting into debt?

• 5:07Speaker 05

10 years. It stems back 10 years ago. I didn't have any financial literacy. No one did. No one did.

• 5:13Caleb Hammer?

Oh, there you go. You've seen the show.

• 5:14Speaker 05

I have. I've seen almost every episode. But 10 years ago, I started my first financial

• 5:22Speaker 05

problem and the very next year it got worse and then the next year it got worse.

• 5:27Caleb Hammer?

So you're the one to educate the wife who has been financially disciplined?

• 5:31Speaker 05

  But yes, but.

• 5:31Caleb Hammer?

And wants you guys to not take shortcuts that would get you in a worse place.

• 5:34Speaker 05

  But.

• 5:35Caleb Hammer?

I feel like I'm supporting wife.

• 5:37Speaker 05

But like two, three years ago, I started learning about stocks and investing and budgeting and financing and things like that.

• 5:42Caleb Hammer?

What is learning about stocks? Please tell me, because there's a lot of things.

• 5:47Speaker 05

Like I've watched a lot of, so I like watch a lot of YouTube and they'll be like, hey, invest a hun-

• 5:51Caleb Hammer?

Careful, there's right or wrong places.

• 5:53Speaker 05

But it's like, oh, take a hundred dollars, invest in the S and P 500. And it's like, but I tried that and it was very slow. So I'm like, I'm not going to do that. So I did at one point. A couple, I'd say four years ago, three, four years ago, I did throw about a thousand dollars towards AMC because they're like, it's gonna go to the limit.

• 6:08Caleb Hammer?

So you're the one to educate the wife on the household finances?

• 6:13Caleb Hammer?

  AMC buyer?

• 6:14Speaker 05

Well, yeah, and then I sold for a loss, but.

• 6:16Caleb Hammer?

So you're the one to educate? So what are you trying to have me do? Just tell the wife that, oh, you know, this guy's right. Oh, come on, Mr. Ted came on and, you know, listen to him. He's the man. He's so smart, big guy. Took a loss at AMC. Listen to him.

• 6:32Speaker 05

  Well.

• 6:33Caleb Hammer?

  What are we trying?

• 6:34Speaker 05

Well, to a certain degree, yes.

• 6:35Caleb Hammer?

  What's your intent?

• 6:36Speaker 05

Yeah, to a certain degree, yes, because it's like I want to educate her, but then I can't. And then, I don't know, like, I just.

• 6:49Speaker 05

I feel like I have the knowledge, but I don't know how to

• 6:52Caleb Hammer?

What's the knowledge? But I don't You wasted your first investment.

• 6:55Speaker 05

But I don't know. But I don't know how to put it into practice.

• 6:58Caleb Hammer?

No, what is your knowledge? Cause your knowledge might be incorrect. If we're applying incorrect knowledge, we lead to a worse place.

• 7:10Caleb Hammer?

So what is? What is your knowledge?

• 7:15Speaker 05

My knowledge is, well, I watch a lot of financial stuff.

• 7:18Caleb Hammer?

Yes, but there's good and bad.

• 7:20Speaker 05

I'm out on the road for 10, 11 hours a day driving. And so I'm listening to podcasts. I'm trying to educate myself on it. I'm trying, and then I try to talk to her about it. And she doesn't have any clue what I'm talking about. She has no idea.

• 7:34Caleb Hammer?

But that might be good, because she wouldn't be buying AMC.

• 7:37Speaker 05

I just, just need you to help me build a case that, so my wife can

• 7:41Caleb Hammer?

Build a fucking case on your behalf? So far, I know that you were the one that took the household into debt. You're the one that tried to start investing and bought into AMC and took a loss. What case am I building on your behalf? Just because you're a fan of the show, I'm not going to be on your side.

• 7:58Speaker 05

But that I, I understand the numbers. I do understand them. I just have a hard time putting them in practice because she pushes back. She will push back on any advice that I try to give.

• 8:11Speaker 05

Some good, some maybe bad, but I try to educate her on some of the good stuff, like a debt consolidation. But then when I, when she pushes back, it does kind of put me in a

• 8:21Caleb Hammer?

  Take consolidation?

• 8:22Speaker 05

Yeah, like taking out a $10,000 loan to collect all of our debts into one at a lower APR kind of thing. But then it's like, when you fight with somebody that you love, it puts you in that mood, at least for me.

• 8:35Caleb Hammer?

Why isn't it a fight immediately, though? Why isn't it a conversation on this?

• 8:38Speaker 05

She has always been, I guess, stressed about money and about finances. Her ex-husband would, uh, go behind her back frequently and take trips out on the road. He was a truck driver before, too.

• 8:53Caleb Hammer?

  How old is she?

• 8:54Speaker 05

  She's 31 as well.

• 8:55Caleb Hammer?

  Okay.

• 8:55Speaker 05

  But, uh, he would

• 8:57Caleb Hammer?

Wow, she really likes that truck driving. Okay.

• 9:00Speaker 05

I guess so, well. Or military because we're both kinda military. I don't think he's a veteran, but that's just my opinion. He didn't go through bootcamp, I did.

• 9:08Caleb Hammer?

What did he do? What do you mean?

• 9:10Speaker 05

Well, he was in the National Guard, but he never went to bootcamp.

• 9:13Caleb Hammer?

So people who don't go to National, who, people who are in the National Guard are not veterans?

• 9:17Speaker 05

No, I think, I think they are. If, if you're serving, if you've gone to the bootcamp, if you've gone to DD two fourteen. Because at that point, you're not really, in my eyes, my opinion, coming from somebody who served honorably for four years.

• 9:31Caleb Hammer?

  He didn't serve honorably?

• 9:32Speaker 05

He didn't. Nope, he got medical discharge.

• 9:34Caleb Hammer?

So because of medical discharge, he's not a veteran?

• 9:38Speaker 05

Because he never went to bootcamp. He never got a DD two fourteen.

• 9:41Caleb Hammer?

It's gonna be very interesting to hear other military's people's thoughts in the comments.

• 9:45Speaker 05

I probably upset a lot of people with that one, but that's just my opinion.

• 9:48Caleb Hammer?

They seem to have a lot of opinions. I'm kinda.

• 9:51Speaker 05

  I'm very opinionated.

• 9:52Caleb Hammer?

Are they correct? The military one, I have no idea, because that is not in my life. Financially, so far, it doesn't seem like it. In what case would I help you build? So you say you've been [__] up for ten years. What, what?

• 10:04Speaker 05

You want me to start from the beginning?

• 10:05Caleb Hammer?

Oh, okay. Well, I'll cut you off if I'm bored, but sure.

• 10:13Speaker 05

Okay, so it started ten years ago, when I bought my first car, and that's kinda where the debt is now, is. Is all these upside down vehicles. My first car, yep.

• 10:23Caleb Hammer?

Our debt from now, ten years later, is from our first car?

• 10:28Speaker 05

Because of poor financial decisions that I made. To be fair.

• 10:32Caleb Hammer?

  Okay, go on.

• 10:34Speaker 05

The last two years, I've actually been doing better financially.

• 10:37Caleb Hammer?

  Yeah, head down that road.

• 10:38Speaker 05

  Educating myself financially.

• 10:39Caleb Hammer?

You wouldn't be here if you were doing well financially, so I don't know what the [__] you're talking about. Yeah, go down that little road.

• 10:44Speaker 05

Okay, so ten years ago, I bought my first car. Yeah, uh, I was a Prius and. It was something that I knew I could afford because I was in the military, I was active duty, I had that consistent paycheck, I knew that that money was gonna be coming in. So I had a three hundred dollar car payment, which wasn't terrible at the time, but then the following year, my wife's father passed away. And in that same week, my grandfather passed away and my family, I guess we're emotional buyers when we get depressed.

• 11:13Caleb Hammer?

Oh, come on. Don't say you got a car because someone passed away.

• 11:16Speaker 05

I traded my other present for the.

• 11:20Caleb Hammer?

  That's such.

• 11:21Speaker 05

  It is.

• 11:22Caleb Hammer?

Listen, we, everyone does cope spending in certain things. That is like an ultimate.

• 11:28Speaker 05

It is, but I justified purchasing that second vehicle because that money was coming in. I was getting a consistent paycheck. I wasn't gonna get fired from the military. You don't just get fired from the military. That money's coming in regardless. So I knew I could afford it. It put me only about a hundred dollars in my checking account every single month. After all the bills were paid because I was not making a lot.

• 11:51Caleb Hammer?

But I don't think you could have afforded it then. You just mean you were able to make the bill. That doesn't equal afford.

• 11:56Speaker 05

My financial education at the time told me if you could pay the bill, you can afford.

• 12:00Caleb Hammer?

But your financial education today is telling you to buy AMC. I don't give a at the time. I think you're pretty.

• 12:06Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 12:07Caleb Hammer?

Yeah. Well, what do you do today? How good's your retirement?

• 12:09Speaker 05

I've got about three hundred in it right now.

• 12:12Caleb Hammer?

Uh huh. Yeah. Your financial education's great.

• 12:14Speaker 05

It, it is more now than it was.

• 12:17Caleb Hammer?

Your retirement's more now? Three hundred? Three hundreds.

• 12:22Speaker 05

  It used to be higher.

• 12:23Caleb Hammer?

So your retirement used to be higher?

• 12:25Speaker 05

It used to be a lot higher.

• 12:26Caleb Hammer?

Okay. What happened? Well, did you gamble in it? Did you take it out?

• 12:30Speaker 05

No, I actually had to use a lot of that for gas and car maintenance.

• 12:35Caleb Hammer?

What the? Okay. So you're the one we're listening to on finances today. Your financial education is a lot better today than it was in the past. I'm taking money out of my retirement for maintenance. Please tell me how.

• 12:48Speaker 05

So I was driving over the road.

• 12:49Caleb Hammer?

As you're trying to take out a personal loan and the wife won't let you because she.

• 12:52Speaker 05

Well, I haven't taken out. I haven't taken out a personal loan. I wanted to maybe consolidate our debts, but to get to where my retirement, I had about six thousand dollars in my retirement. And when I left my over the road job, I took that retirement out.

• 13:07Caleb Hammer?

  When?

• 13:08Speaker 05

It was about June of last, uh, of the last year.

• 13:13Caleb Hammer?

So this just happened. We can't use the this is two years ago excuse anymore. This just

• 13:19Speaker 05

Trying to keep, I was trying to keep our family afloat and pay the bills.

• 13:23Caleb Hammer?

  And why weren't we?

• 13:24Speaker 05

Because the local job that I had was not

• 13:28Caleb Hammer?

Why didn't we have an emergency fund? The person that we trusted their finances, the one who's learned so much more and has gotten so much better over the years.

• 13:34Speaker 05

  Well, because

• 13:35Caleb Hammer?

Hmm, I think that person would have an emergency fund. The person I'm taking advice from for financial.

• 13:39Speaker 05

  I would, but so

• 13:40Caleb Hammer?

You would, but you didn't. So why didn't you?

• 13:43Speaker 05

I did once upon a time, Caleb.

• 13:44Caleb Hammer?

Oh, and then what happened? The person that we're trusting for financial advice?

• 13:49Speaker 05

Probably blew it on Christmas or birthday for my kids.

• 13:52Caleb Hammer?

I thought you were gonna say Christmas, I'll be honest, but

• 13:53Speaker 05

I know we did a trip out to Arizona last year as well, and that cost a few hundred dollars and we drove out there, got hotels, went through a lot of gas, but uh, that was a couple hundred

• 14:05Caleb Hammer?

  That was an emergency?

• 14:07Speaker 05

No, it wasn't an emergency, but

• 14:09Caleb Hammer?

But we used our emergency fund?

• 14:11Speaker 05

Because we, my wife wanted to see her brother that would live down in Arizona and take the kids down.

• 14:16Caleb Hammer?

  Which is an emergency?

• 14:17Speaker 05

For her, it was because it didn't, she doesn't see her

• 14:20Caleb Hammer?

  Was he dying too?

• 14:21Speaker 05

  Well, no.

• 14:22Caleb Hammer?

Okay, then what was the emergency?

• 14:24Speaker 05

  It wasn't an emergency, Caleb.

• 14:25Caleb Hammer?

Okay, so there wasn't an emergency, yet the one we are listening to for financial advice used their emergency fund for a nice little family go away.

• 14:35Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 14:36Caleb Hammer?

And then we didn't have an emergency fund?

• 14:40Caleb Hammer?

So in order to take care of the family, when an emergency happened, we pulled from our entire retirement, which by the way, over the last year, last year, you pulled out halfway through the year? Best year the S and P 500 has had, has had this millennium, millennium, and you lost half of that ability to gain the return.

• 15:00Speaker 05

  I did.

• 15:00Caleb Hammer?

Plus penalties, plus taxes, but I'm gonna hear a but.

• 15:03Speaker 05

I want to talk about why, I want to talk about, I want to talk about why I spent all that money from my retirement for the gas and whatnot.

• 16:20Speaker 05

Right, I had $250 in an emergency fund, but we didn't want to touch that. We wanted it to be an emergency. It isn't, it's a start. It is a start.

• 16:29Caleb Hammer?

Why is the guy we're listening to financial advice only have $250 in an emergency fund?

• 16:32Speaker 05

Because it's a start. When, when all of our money is essentially going to bills.

• 16:36Caleb Hammer?

  Yeah.

• 16:36Speaker 05

  $250.

• 16:37Caleb Hammer?

Why is everything going to bills? I know how much you spent on fast food.

• 16:39Speaker 05

I know. Well, okay, but that is on the credit card. It's not coming from our checking account. It's coming from my credit card, which is...

• 16:48Caleb Hammer?

How was that better? The guy we're listening to for financial advice, how many times do I have to say that this episode? The f*** are you talking about? Go on.

• 16:57Speaker 05

Okay, so I'm trying to explain.

• 16:58Caleb Hammer?

  I'll try to not interrupt.

• 16:59Speaker 05

I'll try to explain. So I want to talk about this local gig first that I had that kind of put us in this position where I had to pull for my 401K.

• 17:06Caleb Hammer?

  That's not what put you...

• 17:07Speaker 05

But it, it, it did put us, it did.

• 17:09Caleb Hammer?

That is not the primary cause.

• 17:11Speaker 05

It, it is linked. It is, it is linked. So we were spending...

• 17:25Speaker 05

Eight hundred and fifty dollars on gas when I was doing this local job, just in gas to commute from my house to my job, which was in Idaho Falls and in Pocatello, I had to go there every day. It was local, but I had to commute to the Home Depot where it was based out of.

• 17:42Caleb Hammer?

  Then that's not local.

• 17:43Speaker 05

It is. I had to drive thirty miles to, to pick up the truck and then I'd drive the local truck to local areas throughout the southeast.

• 17:51Caleb Hammer?

Oh, but it's not local to you.

• 17:52Speaker 05

It is local to me. It's thirty miles away.

• 17:54Caleb Hammer?

Thirty miles is local in Idaho?

• 17:56Speaker 05

It is. It is pretty close too. Like, they hired me out of Idaho, uh, they hired me out of Rexburg. It doesn't have to be, I don't know why they hired me. They should have hired me.

• 18:08Caleb Hammer?

  Uh huh.

• 18:09Speaker 05

Yeah, and then eighty miles to get to Pocatello, it is local.

• 18:12Caleb Hammer?

  I don't know these words.

• 18:15Speaker 05

Okay, so from here to, I don't know what thirty minutes, Texas is too big of a state for me.

• 18:20Caleb Hammer?

San Marcos is just over thirty miles away, a completely different city.

• 18:24Speaker 05

  For Texas.

• 18:25Caleb Hammer?

  That is not local.

• 18:26Speaker 05

  For Texas.

• 18:27Caleb Hammer?

  Okay, whatever.

• 18:27Speaker 05

Idaho is significantly, you got a lot of smaller cities.

• 18:30Caleb Hammer?

Yes, you have a lot of potatoes. I know, go on.

• 18:32Speaker 05

No, you have a lot of smaller cities in between. So Rexburg is a hub, Idaho Falls is a hub, Pocatello's a hub, Boise is a hub, Twin Falls.

• 18:40Caleb Hammer?

Doesn't mean the hub within the hub is local.

• 18:42Speaker 05

But they, they classify it as local, even if I were to get a little.

• 18:45Caleb Hammer?

  You?

• 18:46Speaker 05

I had to drive thirty miles with a not very fuel-efficient vehicle to get to my job.

• 18:50Caleb Hammer?

Can I ask you a question?

• 18:51Speaker 05

  Yeah, what's up?

• 18:51Caleb Hammer?

I immediately am gonna distract you.

• 18:55Caleb Hammer?

  Why'd you keep that job?

• 18:57Speaker 05

  Why?

• 18:58Caleb Hammer?

Instead of mass applying for another job where you're not blowing money to literally work it?

• 19:03Speaker 05

Well, it took me several months to realize how detrimental this job was.

• 19:08Caleb Hammer?

The guy we're taking financial advice from?

• 19:09Speaker 05

Yes. So I got hired on with the assumption that the job was gonna be paying a thousand dollars a week.

• 19:15Caleb Hammer?

  Wasn't?

• 19:16Speaker 05

  And, no, it wasn't.

• 19:17Caleb Hammer?

You're doing that, you're doing that after a week.

• 19:19Speaker 05

After taxes, it was nine hundred dollars and then they started making.

• 19:22Caleb Hammer?

Did you forget that taxes didn't exist?

• 19:23Speaker 05

Well, no, but. I was assuming that that one thousand dollars would almost be net like they would pay me eleven hundred dollars gross and then a thousand dollars.

• 19:30Caleb Hammer?

What did they tell you they'd pay you?

• 19:32Speaker 05

They just said we could get you close to a thousand dollars a week.

• 19:34Caleb Hammer?

Sounds like you're close to a thousand dollars a week.

• 19:36Speaker 05

And then they took out taxes, which wasn't much, obviously.

• 19:39Caleb Hammer?

  Government, not them.

• 19:40Speaker 05

Whatever. And then, and then they took out twenty-five dollars a week for my 401K to invest into the 401K that I had with them, but that did start.

• 19:50Caleb Hammer?

You didn't have to do, you chose.

• 19:51Speaker 05

I chose to do it. After about four months into it, I decided to go ahead and start investing in it. But it was paying me, so I was paying about eight hundred dollars a week after taxes. Okay, so after taxes in 401K, I was paying about eight hundred dollars a week.

• 20:04Caleb Hammer?

We went from nine hundred to eight hundred by losing twenty-five dollars, I'm confused.

• 20:07Speaker 05

  Yeah, and then the taxes.

• 20:09Caleb Hammer?

They said nine hundred after taxes, originally.

• 20:12Speaker 05

So that's what it would, so they said that they would pay me close to a thousand dollars. But I didn't, they didn't tell me that close to a thousand dollars meant nine hundred dollars.

• 20:20Caleb Hammer?

  Uh huh.

• 20:21Speaker 05

  So nine hundred dollars.

• 20:22Caleb Hammer?

Week of income per month in order to have the job to commute.

• 20:25Speaker 05

So eight hundred dollars a week is what I was getting paid. So thirty-two hundred dollars a month is what I was getting paid. We're paying eight fifty in gas every month just to fill up the car to commute to and from. And then my wife also, she works in Isle Falls, so she had to drive to and from, but we have two vehicles, so she would generally take the more fuel-efficient vehicle. But we would pay eight fifty a month on that. Then I had to pay a hundred fifty dollars in maintenance every single month because of how much I was driving just to get to Isle Falls or get to Pocatello.

• 20:53Caleb Hammer?

Sounds like we applied for other jobs instead of losing a job instead.

• 20:56Speaker 05

So but the schedule, I couldn't, not with that job. It was very.

• 20:59Caleb Hammer?

How many hours a week did you work?

• 21:00Speaker 05

  It varied.

• 21:01Caleb Hammer?

How many hours a week did you normally work?

• 21:03Speaker 05

I would work between twenty-five to thirty hours a week, sometimes more.

• 21:09Caleb Hammer?

And how many hours were commuting a week?

• 21:10Speaker 05

Uh, commuting a week, it would be round trip.

• 21:15Speaker 05

Uh, an hour, two, three, three hours. It'd be about seven or eight hours round trip, commuting.

• 21:22Caleb Hammer?

So forty hours a week is what you dealt with and you couldn't apply for other jobs, even though, even though, I couldn't? Even though other people who work forty hours a week apply to jobs?

• 21:30Speaker 05

And here's why I couldn't, because the, the schedule would not allow me to, so.

• 21:35Caleb Hammer?

Would it allow you to log into LinkedIn?

• 21:36Speaker 05

No, it wouldn't. Now, here's why though. Let me, let me explain. Please let me explain.

• 21:40Caleb Hammer?

  I'm gonna let you try.

• 21:45Speaker 05

So I had to get up at four, five o'clock in the morning, every morning, start my job at 5:30, 6 o'clock in the morning, okay?

• 21:50Caleb Hammer?

  Okay, so-

• 21:51Speaker 05

So from five in the morning, then I'd drive to Idaho Falls, or I'd drive to Pocatello, and I'd start my day. So why I couldn't apply for a job, so-

• 21:58Caleb Hammer?

  Yes.

• 21:58Speaker 05

  It's five in the morning-

• 21:59Caleb Hammer?

  Yeah, oh, is it?

• 22:00Speaker 05

  I'm up, okay, so I'm-

• 22:01Caleb Hammer?

That's when you woke up? Wait, what time did you wake up?

• 22:03Speaker 05

Sometimes I'd wake up at four.

• 22:05Caleb Hammer?

  Oh, that's interesting.

• 22:06Speaker 05

But I'd get up, and I'd drive, and I'd come home sometimes, one o'clock in the afternoon. Sometimes I was working all the way till six, seven o'clock at night. If I had a schedule like that, where I'm working till six, seven o'clock at night, nobody's gonna want to

• 22:20Speaker 05

  work another job.

• 22:22Caleb Hammer?

  Want.

• 22:22Speaker 05

  Yeah, want to.

• 22:23Caleb Hammer?

I don't give a fuck about your want, I care about how you had to pull out of 401K.

• 22:27Speaker 05

But you also gotta spend time with your kids, too.

• 22:29Caleb Hammer?

I'm not saying don't, but if you put an hour aside a day to apply for jobs, it's worth it.

• 22:33Speaker 05

I could apply for another job, but what, okay, what if I couldn't make it to my shift at McDonald's, or at Burger-

• 22:39Caleb Hammer?

No, I'm not saying pick up a second job, I'm saying you're a replacement job for the job that wasn't working.

• 22:44Speaker 05

Because nothing pays as much as a truck driver.

• 22:47Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, but you lost an entire week of income.

• 22:49Speaker 05

  I did, but-

• 22:50Caleb Hammer?

So I'm sure you could've found something that would've at least equaled the three hours.

• 22:53Speaker 05

And that is what, maybe, perhaps, but-

• 22:56Caleb Hammer?

  That you wouldn't have lost.

• 22:56Speaker 05

But then we have to pay more for babysitting costs, because my wife would have to work, I can't just go and work a second, third job, and nor can she.

• 23:04Caleb Hammer?

I'm saying, uh, getting a different job. Listen, buddy, you lost this job in the end anyway, and your entire complaint of this job is that you spent a week of income per month in order to maintain that job, but then you lost it anyway. That's where adults look for a different job.

• 23:18Speaker 05

And that's what I did, and now we have a new budget with the new job that I have.

• 23:22Caleb Hammer?

  Budget?

• 23:23Speaker 05

  Yeah, I've got a budget.

• 23:24Caleb Hammer?

  You have a budget?

• 23:25Speaker 05

  I have a budget.

• 23:25Caleb Hammer?

  Uh-huh.

• 23:26Speaker 05

I'll admit, I do not follow it.

• 23:28Caleb Hammer?

The fuck are you talking about, have a budget, then?

• 23:30Speaker 05

Well, with the credit card, I spend more on the credit card, but the budget, I do have one, and my wife and I, we do stick to it pretty rigorously.

• 23:40Caleb Hammer?

  Oh, yeah? Do you?

• 23:40Speaker 05

  Yes, we do.

• 23:41Caleb Hammer?

  That's very curious.

• 23:42Speaker 05

Yes, we do, you could look at it, we might go-

• 23:45Caleb Hammer?

I just did, can I have some money? I want some fake money! I like some fake money!

• 23:49Speaker 05

We might go over once in a while.

• 23:50Caleb Hammer?

  Money, please!

• 23:50Speaker 05

Okay, we might go over once in a while, but we do, sometimes under-

• 23:55Caleb Hammer?

  Hey, your little tit!

• 23:58Caleb Hammer?

You know the household income. I know the household income, but I'd like you to disperse this. This is more, this is an infinite amount of money. So you essentially just have to take these stacks and disperse them into different categories, label the categories, tell me what, show me what your budget is right here. And by the way, the way you do it is stupid. Just use the simple budget app, by the way, which you get for free.

• 24:25Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 24:26Caleb Hammer?

The premium version for free. You and your wife will hook you guys up. Use it. The audience, they get a two week trial.

• 24:30Speaker 05

  I've got.

• 24:31Caleb Hammer?

This is a very manual way to do it. And obviously your budgeting's not working, but go ahead.

• 24:34Speaker 05

  Okay. So we budget $700.

• 24:37Caleb Hammer?

Label it just, I'm gonna give you some time. Yeah, you can talk me through it.

• 24:41Speaker 05

  Okay. So $700 for grocery.

• 24:43Caleb Hammer?

Good. Go ahead and put $700 aside for it then. Go ahead. Label it up. This can be your little grocery column.

• 24:49Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 24:50Caleb Hammer?

  You know, put the post.

• 24:50Speaker 05

$700 for grocery. I don't have it all right here exactly, but it's close.

• 24:57Caleb Hammer?

You budget. You should know your budget.

• 24:59Speaker 05

I, I, I have it mostly memorized at this point because I look at it quite a bit. 803 is our mortgage.

• 25:06Caleb Hammer?

  That's incredible.

• 25:08Speaker 05

  Yeah. VA home loan.

• 25:09Caleb Hammer?

I don't think that's what made the minimum payment low.

• 25:11Speaker 05

Well, and it's also just a two bedroom.

• 25:13Caleb Hammer?

That's what made it low in the middle of nowhere. Yep.

• 25:15Speaker 05

803 for our mortgage. We have an HOA of 152 after the fee. It's $150. So we got our HOA. We have $150 that we budgeted out for utilities every month, but sometimes it doesn't go that high. Sometimes it's significantly less, but we, we have it in there in case, because it has gotten close to that before.

• 25:37Caleb Hammer?

Looking like a pretty healthy budget so far.

• 25:39Speaker 05

  It is like.

• 25:40Caleb Hammer?

  Oh, I'm sure. Keep going.

• 25:42Speaker 05

And I've got it written down too, but we, we, we budget out $50 for a date night every month.

• 25:48Caleb Hammer?

That's cute. Keep the romance alive.

• 25:50Speaker 05

You should. You should get away from the kids once in a while.

• 25:52Caleb Hammer?

  And go to the.

• 25:53Speaker 05

Once you have kids, you'll understand how important that is to get away from them. We pay $80 a month to one of our doctors for the birth of our children. We still owe quite a bit of that on that.

• 26:07Caleb Hammer?

They're three and a half years old.

• 26:08Speaker 05

They're three and a half old, years old, but they're million dollar babies.

• 26:13Speaker 05

Yeah, when they were born, they were a million dollars. They spent time in the hospital. And then labor and delivery and ambulance.

• 26:18Caleb Hammer?

  What was wrong with them?

• 26:19Speaker 05

They were two and a half months early.

• 26:20Caleb Hammer?

  Woo, wow.

• 26:22Speaker 05

Yeah, they were this big when they were born. And they were really tiny, they spent two and a half months in the NICU. I do have a subscription to a study app for my Navy job.

• 26:37Caleb Hammer?

Go ahead and put all your subscriptions into one.

• 26:39Speaker 05

About thirty seven for all my subscriptions.

• 26:41Caleb Hammer?

Very curious how necessary these subscriptions are when we're dying in debt. Go for it, continue.

• 26:46Speaker 05

And then we got a six hundred sixty five dollar car payment for one vehicle. And five sixty two for the other one, twelve twenty seven, four hundred fifty three dollars for gas. But that might be off by a little bit because now I'm driving a different job and I'm not commuting as much. Four hundred fifty three. And then I think our last big thing is childcare, which we lost our most recent, our cheapest babysitter. Unfortunately, and so we spent about eighteen hundred dollars a month on babysitting costs.

• 27:22Caleb Hammer?

I hear you're into fourteen year olds.

• 27:25Speaker 05

  I'm not.

• 27:28Speaker 05

I'm not into fourteen year olds, what?

• 27:29Caleb Hammer?

Is that when you and your wife met?

• 27:31Speaker 05

  Oh, yo, yeah, yeah.

• 27:34Speaker 05

I'm not into fourteen year olds, Caleb. I was fourteen, no, I was like thirteen when I met her. I was either thirteen or fourteen. I was fourteen when I met her. It's hard to think that I'm not into fourteen year olds, Caleb. That's sick and gross. And any adult who is into fourteen year olds should be shanked by the ball sack. If you're an adult and you're into fourteen year olds, get help, seriously. Like, that is, that is beyond sick.

• 27:57Caleb Hammer?

  Keep going.

• 27:57Speaker 05

Okay, you made me lose track, Caleb. Into fourteen year olds, are you kidding me? Sure. I mean, if you want to look at it that way, sure, I guess I am.

• 28:08Speaker 05

She's still, I'm gonna incriminate myself if I say that. I should probably not say stuff like that. She looks really young still, so. I should probably not have said that. I probably should not have said that, but she, she takes good care of herself, so. I think, oh, and then I do a credit card payment of two fifty a month.

• 28:28Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, all your debt payments outside your mortgage, go, go, go, go.

• 28:31Speaker 05

Two fifty a month for my credit card. I think that's just about all the major things. I got all of the subscriptions.

• 28:37Caleb Hammer?

So this is your whole budget. This is your written budget. This is the budget you write.

• 28:41Speaker 05

That I remember off the top of my head. I remember off the top of my head. These are the big things that I remember.

• 28:46Caleb Hammer?

Come on, what else do you budget for?

• 28:48Speaker 05

Uh, we also pay a one percent tithe to our church, which is about sixty dollars.

• 28:56Caleb Hammer?

You strike me as going to a very white church.

• 28:59Speaker 05

Yeah, uh, most of us are. So my wife and I are members of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

• 29:05Caleb Hammer?

  Oh, there it is.

• 29:06Speaker 05

Yeah, we should be paying a ten percent tithing, but we can't afford a ten percent tithing off of the budget that we have with the debts that we have.

• 29:12Caleb Hammer?

  Is that it?

• 29:13Speaker 05

That would be six hundred dollars a month. I believe that is about it.

• 29:18Caleb Hammer?

So that's your whole budget. Cool. Good, good, good. Yep, so lay it out in front of you. That's your budget. Let's see. Okay, so our entire budget is what?

• 29:27Speaker 05

Uh, five thousand six hundred seventy-seven is what I got.

• 29:29Caleb Hammer?

Okay, because your guys' household income was somewhere around there, right?

• 29:35Speaker 05

Pretty close too, it should be.

• 29:36Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, you spent eight thousand one hundred sixty dollars last month. So incorrect, incorrect, incorrect, incorrect. What are you talking about? Follow this entire household budget. The guy who's an expert in personal finances. You spent double that. You spent double. You spent double. So what is even the point?

• 29:54Speaker 05

  I can explain.

• 29:55Caleb Hammer?

Why do you, oh, we can explain. We have a budget. We follow the budget. We write down the budget. We don't follow the budget.

• 30:00Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 30:01Caleb Hammer?

I'm an expert in my budget. I don't follow it.

• 30:03Speaker 05

So a lot of it was on the credit card that I did spend. We do, on the checking account, generally we keep it within bounds, but the credit card I did.

• 30:11Caleb Hammer?

Generally we keep it in bounds.

• 30:12Speaker 05

  We do.

• 30:13Caleb Hammer?

What the fuck is that saying? Your budget? You're spending this on your budget?

• 30:16Speaker 05

We don't overdraft. We don't overdraft. We've never. Gone negative.

• 30:18Caleb Hammer?

Instead, we just spend double on our credit card.

• 30:19Speaker 05

But instead, we just, yeah, we'll spend double on the.

• 30:21Caleb Hammer?

  And that's okay. That's better. That's okay.

• 30:22Speaker 05

I justified it because that month of statements that I sent you, there is a charge in there for $500. The car had to get new tires, had to get brand new tires. So that was a $500 charge that had to go on there that we now overspend on our budget. So 5,600.

• 30:39Caleb Hammer?

The interest that is likely accruing on these credit cards is just as bad as an overdraft fee.

• 30:43Speaker 05

But we didn't have an emergency fund, so we did pay.

• 30:45Caleb Hammer?

Why didn't we have an emergency fund? Oh, because we're done. We go on vacation because we're the person that everyone should look up to for personal finances.

• 30:50Speaker 05

I was spending a lot of money on gas and maintenance and of course.

• 30:52Caleb Hammer?

Nope, not just that. It's because you didn't manage your money. Put a thousand dollars on there. Guess what? We're still within our budget. But you spent in terms of what came in on a better month than what you're saying. I'll be honest, probably because we're combining with the wife a little. But either way, you still spent $2,000 more than you made on a monthly basis, basically. So what the are you talking about? Why are you the one that I am supposed to back in the argument against you? We will call your wife later in the episode.

• 31:16Speaker 05

  Okay, we will.

• 31:16Caleb Hammer?

I will call her and I'll tell her.

• 31:18Speaker 05

I explained $500 of the $2,000, 500 of that was for the tires.

• 31:26Caleb Hammer?

  25%. Well done.

• 31:28Speaker 05

Of course, I did eat out quite a bit. Being out on the road, it's a lot easier to.

• 31:35Caleb Hammer?

Why wasn't that in your budget? Well, this is pretty fucking exciting for the world of financial audit. Something big, Mar. Nearly 60,000 of you have downloaded my budgeting app, Simpler Budget, in just a few weeks of its launch. And let me tell you, we've heard amazing feedback. • 32:34Speaker 05

I do have a red budget because we are paying the monthly payments on it we are still paying the monthly payments on it

• 32:40Caleb Hammer?

but the interest is accruing this is gonna be just as bad as an overdraft

• 32:43Speaker 05

okay and my justification to do that and it's a terrible justification I get it but this is why I'm trying to educate myself and trying to get more knowledgeable I'm still in my infant stages of learning to be fair

• 32:54Caleb Hammer?

bullshit 10 years you're 31 infant stages learning

• 32:58Speaker 05

10 years of making a mistake seven years of being

• 33:01Caleb Hammer?

what are you doing what are you talking about

• 33:02Speaker 05

seven years of being married and combining a household income okay

• 33:06Caleb Hammer?

oh so you're just excusing your immaturity

• 33:09Speaker 05

seven years of being married and combining a household income my wife actually got me on a budget I was really good with our money seven years ago because of

• 33:18Caleb Hammer?

so you've gotten worse the guy that I'm supposed to defend against the wife

• 33:22Speaker 05

and part of the reason why I've gotten worse is because my paychecks have gotten bigger and lifestyle inflation is like I gotta find it

• 33:28Caleb Hammer?

why are we listening to you that is what it comes back to in this conversation cuz you want me to be your ambassador but I can't be I am not gonna be your little Mormon missionary to your wife it's not happening

• 33:40Speaker 05

no but in the last two years like I said it's infant stages of me being financially educated the last two years I'm trying to learn it but I have to undo a decade of financial mistakes

• 33:52Caleb Hammer?

is this what someone's brain is like who's never had coffee in their life

• 33:55Speaker 05

  I don't drink coffee

• 33:56Caleb Hammer?

  is this what happens

• 33:58Speaker 05

we're not allowed to drink tea or coffee but yet we can have soda every now and then it's weird I don't know it's weird

• 34:05Caleb Hammer?

life's not that bad if you can't drink coffee when you get your own planet in the end

• 34:09Speaker 05

  planet without you on it

• 34:11Caleb Hammer?

  Why'd you come here then?

• 34:12Speaker 05

Because I want to get more educated.

• 34:16Caleb Hammer?

More educated? You said you wanted me to be on your side.

• 34:18Speaker 05

In person, I want to get more educated in person, so I can bring a case to my wife to argue my case.

• 34:24Caleb Hammer?

Sounds like she already has the correct opinion.

• 34:26Speaker 05

But she pushes back on a lot of things.

• 34:28Caleb Hammer?

  Because your opinions are dumb.

• 34:30Speaker 05

From a mistake that I made 10 years ago.

• 34:32Caleb Hammer?

No, no, you're trying to consolidate now, but you're spending-

• 34:34Speaker 05

Well, I'm not trying to consolidate now, it was just an option that I floated around a while ago.

• 34:38Caleb Hammer?

Oh, you are back in, you are doing some revisionist history here compared to what you were telling us before, buddy. This, you were advocating it quite hard, you got into a huge argument. You wouldn't get into an argument just floating an idea, unless you are pushing for it pretty hard.

• 34:52Speaker 05

That was when our finances were a lot worse than they were today.

• 34:53Caleb Hammer?

When the f*** was it? Why'd you bring it up then?

• 34:56Speaker 05

Because I was looking at maybe getting-

• 34:58Caleb Hammer?

Buddy, you pulled from your 401K just a few months ago.

• 35:01Speaker 05

Yeah, I did, to pay for gas and maintenance in the car.

• 35:03Caleb Hammer?

  Uh huh, uh huh.

• 35:04Speaker 05

Garbage disposal went out, so I had to pay for a brand new garbage disposal.

• 35:07Caleb Hammer?

Cause you didn't have an emergency fund to go to financialization.

• 35:09Speaker 05

  Nope, I-

• 35:10Caleb Hammer?

  Yep.

• 35:11Speaker 05

  And then I had to-

• 35:12Caleb Hammer?

  You can't change that now.

• 35:13Speaker 05

There were actually, there was another set of tires too that also went out too.

• 35:17Caleb Hammer?

Sounds like we should have been applying to different jobs.

• 35:19Speaker 05

  I, and that's why I did, that's why I have a new job now.

• 35:22Caleb Hammer?

  Took a long time.

• 35:23Speaker 05

  It did.

• 35:24Caleb Hammer?

You said you lost your job.

• 35:25Speaker 05

  I didn't lose my job.

• 35:26Caleb Hammer?

Okay, what did you say then?

• 35:27Speaker 05

So, I got a different job, so-

• 35:29Caleb Hammer?

So what was the issue then in that situation?

• 35:31Speaker 05

  So I was driving local.

• 35:32Caleb Hammer?

Cause you weren't living paycheck to paycheck. You, you were not.

• 35:34Speaker 05

  I kind of was.

• 35:35Caleb Hammer?

You were not. With the budget that you laid out, even with the gas prices being higher, which you confessed were higher in your budget than they are in reality. You guys still had wiggle room in your budget. Yet, even now with your finances making more money and everything and having to put more money towards the gas, you still spend 2,000 hours more than you bring in. You had the wiggle room, you were still spending on bullshit, and you weren't willing to cut back because you're a child.

• 35:56Speaker 05

Yeah, well, and now I'm making more money now, so it should start to balance out. It should start to balance out. But I was still living in that mindset of, I'm back on the road, I'm gonna spend, I'm gonna spend, I'm gonna spend, I'm gonna spend, I'm gonna spend. And it's on a credit card that I've had for- Twelve years, so that's the one thing that my wife doesn't really have is the credit card. She doesn't see the credit card. She doesn't know what's going on in the credit card. I did come clean to her.

• 36:22Caleb Hammer?

She can't, she doesn't know what's going on in the credit card?

• 36:24Speaker 05

She does. I, I talked to her. I talked, I talked to him. I talked to her.

• 36:27Caleb Hammer?

  Oh, what are we confessing?

• 36:29Speaker 05

  I talked to-

• 36:30Caleb Hammer?

Is this a gay woman marriage?

• 36:31Speaker 05

It is not. I'm not gay.

• 36:33Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, I don't think you have twins do that.

• 36:34Speaker 05

  No, you don't.

• 36:35Caleb Hammer?

Why? Are you offended by the idea of, uh, taking a dick?

• 36:40Speaker 05

  A little bit.

• 36:41Caleb Hammer?

  Okay.

• 36:42Speaker 05

I mean, I was in the Navy, so...

• 36:44Caleb Hammer?

  Nothing wrong with that.

• 36:46Speaker 05

  It's all gay underway.

• 36:47Caleb Hammer?

Okay, listen, I don't care. I don't care what you do or who you are.

• 36:52Speaker 05

You put a hundred people, a hundred angry testosterone-driven men in one room and you-

• 36:56Caleb Hammer?

What are you confessing to right now?

• 36:57Speaker 05

I'm not confessing to anything, but you-

• 36:58Caleb Hammer?

Sounds like you're kinda confessing to things.

• 37:00Speaker 05

You're throwing a, a compliment, or not compliment, uh-

• 37:04Caleb Hammer?

  What, what is happening?

• 37:06Speaker 05

A remark. You're throwing a remark at me. Oh, do you have a problem taking dick? Well, no, I don't.

• 37:10Caleb Hammer?

No, no, but you were, you were so insulted.

• 37:13Speaker 05

But, you get a hu- you get a hundred people in a room.

• 37:16Caleb Hammer?

You were so insulted when I suggested that. Maybe you were with a dude when you said he.

• 37:21Speaker 05

  No.

• 37:22Caleb Hammer?

  That's why he's at it.

• 37:23Speaker 05

There's a lot going on, a lot of finances going on.

• 37:25Caleb Hammer?

You might need to go wash yourself clean in the Garden of Eden in Kansas.

• 37:28Speaker 05

I probably should. I like Kansas, actually.

• 37:31Caleb Hammer?

  I know, that's where-

• 37:32Speaker 05

  But-

• 37:32Caleb Hammer?

  All the good stuff.

• 37:34Speaker 05

Where was I? Like, what, what were- I lost my train of thought.

• 37:39Caleb Hammer?

You want me to ta- I don't know, buddy. Uh, we lost it. You were talking about your wife. You called her a he. You got insulted that I suggested that potentially she was a he. Uh, what, what were you blaming your wife on?

• 37:49Speaker 05

So, oh yeah, so I had a conversation with her. I had a conversation with her about my spending. I told her, when I knew I was coming on, I was like, hey, I gotta come clean about what's been going on with the finances. She's like, are you spending on the credit card? I'm like, I am. And she's like, how much? And I'm like, more than I'd like to admit. And, uh, I think it's even more than I dare to even look at. But I don't look at it, as long as I pay the payment, the minimum monthly payment. I don't like looking at the credit card. And I use it as a justification to spend and eat out, but I did tell her I'm eating out quite a bit. Two, three, four, five dollars a month.

• 38:26Caleb Hammer?

Then what is this budget? What was the point of that? I told you to give me what is spent in a monthly basis, your budget.

• 38:33Speaker 05

Well, that's what's theoretically supposed to be spent.

• 38:35Caleb Hammer?

Remember when you had to pull a 401k, you wanted this vacation, right? Okay, so what was this vacation to? What was this so special?

• 38:42Speaker 05

We went to Arizona for a couple of days.

• 38:43Caleb Hammer?

Arizona, so that you only spent $250?

• 38:46Speaker 05

On gas and hotels, it was about $250, but then we went to the Legoland with the kids.

• 38:51Caleb Hammer?

Oh, Legoland, so that's more important than a 401k?

• 38:53Speaker 05

It's building memories with my kids. You don't have kids, you don't understand.

• 38:56Caleb Hammer?

No, but I do have retirement and I wouldn't pull for it for them because guess what? Me being able to take care of myself in my older age would be also important and more fun than a quick little experience that they wouldn't remember. Because they're barely in the memory.

• 39:08Speaker 05

That is what I'm trying to do now.

• 39:09Caleb Hammer?

How many dollars do you have in your 401k right now, 31?

• 39:12Speaker 05

  I've got about $300 in my 401k.

• 39:14Caleb Hammer?

  You pulled out 6,000.

• 39:15Speaker 05

It's better than some people who come on here and have nothing.

• 39:17Caleb Hammer?

You pulled out 6,000. Trust me, you comparing yourself to other people on this show.

• 39:20Speaker 05

I'm not trying to, but what I'm trying to say is, but what I am trying to say is, there is something there and it is coming back and I am starting.

• 39:27Caleb Hammer?

Even a lot of the words people on the show have $300 in retirement still.

• 39:31Speaker 05

And I'm starting again with my new job. I am starting to reinvest in that 401k.

• 39:35Caleb Hammer?

Now, why do you have to start again? Why are we saying that word?

• 39:37Speaker 05

Because when I left my job, I took out that 401k.

• 39:42Caleb Hammer?

  Because?

• 39:42Speaker 05

  Because of gas and maintenance.

• 39:44Caleb Hammer?

Because we didn't have an emergency fund.

• 39:45Speaker 05

Because I didn't have an emergency fund.

• 39:46Caleb Hammer?

  For Legoland.

• 39:47Speaker 05

For Legoland and Arizona and hotels.

• 39:49Caleb Hammer?

In the, in the end, the math works out that Legoland, we took out money from our 401k for Legoland is essentially what happened in the end.

• 39:55Speaker 05

And dinner, making memories with my wife and kids and.

• 39:58Caleb Hammer?

Not memories for them, they couldn't remember. They're just entering memory stage of life.

• 40:01Speaker 05

You'll be surprised at how smart a three-year-old is.

• 40:03Caleb Hammer?

I'm sure they can be smart when they can know how to point out what a pen is or something. I don't know, that's exciting. But we know when people start forming memories and they're in that area, there's gonna be pictures, it's really great. But they'll also really be able to remember when mom and dad are unable to retire and they're putting their life on hold in order to fund you.

• 40:19Speaker 05

I have a plan to retire though.

• 40:20Caleb Hammer?

Oh, please tell me this grand wisdom plan, because you've been so good so far at financial life. Does it involve AMC this time?

• 40:27Speaker 05

It does not. It does not.

• 40:28Caleb Hammer?

Which, what, which new meme stock are we on?

• 40:30Speaker 05

No meme stocks. I'm done with the meme stock. I did the Doge coin when it first came out.

• 40:34Caleb Hammer?

  Of course you did.

• 40:35Speaker 05

But I only did $10, so it wasn't, it was like. It's like here, here's ten dollars. If it goes up, it goes up. And it did. And then I sold it and I got like twelve, thirteen dollars out of it. Wasn't a big deal. But I did, that was many years ago. That was like five years ago, four or five years ago, I did that, 2020. But my new plan to get us to a retirement now is with the job that I have now, where I'm able to invest in my 401k on a regular basis.

• 41:01Caleb Hammer?

What about when the next vacation pops up? What if you want to go to the ancient holy land of upstate New York?

• 41:06Speaker 05

We are planning, we are planning kind of like a staycation. We go to Boise every year. Every summer, we go to Boise for a day. Just a day and we budget a hundred fifty dollars for that trip. We do budget that. We may not be able to make that happen this year. We didn't go last year because of my local job and

• 41:23Speaker 05

I'm investing in my 401k again with my new job.

• 41:26Caleb Hammer?

  How much?

• 41:26Speaker 05

It's a three percent with a fifty percent employer match.

• 41:30Caleb Hammer?

And it only goes up to that three percent?

• 41:31Speaker 05

It can go as high as, I can invest

• 41:33Caleb Hammer?

That's not gonna get anywhere, buddy.

• 41:34Speaker 05

But I can invest eight percent of my check. And then they'll invest four percent. So they'll invest fifty percent of their four.

• 41:40Caleb Hammer?

Fifty percent up to eight percent?

• 41:41Speaker 05

  Up to eight percent.

• 41:42Caleb Hammer?

  Why aren't you doing that?

• 41:43Speaker 05

  Can't afford it right now.

• 41:44Caleb Hammer?

I don't think you can afford the three percent you do.

• 41:46Speaker 05

  I can because

• 41:47Caleb Hammer?

You spend double what you make. No, two thousand dollars more than you make, sorry.

• 41:51Speaker 05

  But

• 41:52Caleb Hammer?

  Oh, there's a but?

• 41:53Speaker 05

  But things are gonna change.

• 41:54Caleb Hammer?

Oh, why haven't they? If they were gonna change, why haven't they? Sorry, we haven't gotten into finances yet, but I gotta break this man down.

• 41:59Speaker 05

A lot of the reason why things haven't changed is because a lot of the pushback that I'm getting with my wife, that we fight over these finances over.

• 42:05Caleb Hammer?

I'm not surprised. Look how we've had this conversation so far.

• 42:07Speaker 05

Yeah, well, you're not my wife.

• 42:08Caleb Hammer?

You're being an arrogant prick, though.

• 42:10Speaker 05

  I get that.

• 42:11Caleb Hammer?

Why, why act like you know what you're talking about? You wouldn't be on the show if you did.

• 42:14Speaker 05

But she is so set again. And I get it. Caleb, I get it.

• 42:17Caleb Hammer?

Maybe you need to leave her for a man.

• 42:19Speaker 05

  Maybe, no, no, I shouldn't.

• 42:21Caleb Hammer?

  Insulted again.

• 42:22Speaker 05

I, I joke about getting with her brother. He's a good looking guy, but

• 42:25Caleb Hammer?

Yes, it's a joke. They laugh about it so much.

• 42:28Speaker 05

He's a good looking guy, but, no, I don't swing that way. My dick doesn't get hard for other dudes. If it did, we would not be having this conversation.

• 42:36Caleb Hammer?

  What?

• 42:37Speaker 05

My dick can get hard for other dudes.

• 42:39Caleb Hammer?

  What does that mean?

• 42:40Speaker 05

  I'm just saying.

• 42:40Caleb Hammer?

Wait, no, what does that mean?

• 42:42Speaker 05

If my dick got hard for other dudes, do you think I'd be here talking to you? I'd be talking to your producers instead.

• 42:49Speaker 05

And we would be in the back room doing something else.

• 42:51Caleb Hammer?

Oh, no, don't think you, now I'm getting insulted picture that, oh. Also, not my preference, but I don't get insulted by it.

• 42:59Speaker 05

  Well.

• 43:03Speaker 05

  Yeah, no, if you're getting

• 43:04Caleb Hammer?

Do you joke about that one as well?

• 43:05Speaker 05

  I, I, I

• 43:06Caleb Hammer?

  Lots of giggles?

• 43:07Speaker 05

I've got lots of jokes. When I was in the military, they called me AJ for a reason. I'm just saying, but we're not gonna AJ? AJ. But by saying anything on a camera, it might dox me, so I probably won't

• 43:20Caleb Hammer?

  What does AJ mean?

• 43:23Speaker 05

Do you want me to tell you?

• 43:24Caleb Hammer?

  If you, sure.

• 43:26Speaker 05

  Awkward.

• 43:28Speaker 05

  Aren't I so awkward? Aren't I so awkward?

• 43:30Caleb Hammer?

What, every time, every time you saw a dude in the shower?

• 43:33Speaker 05

Well, I don't know. I guess I would just stand in the shadows and they'd be like, oh, that guy's freaking awkward.

• 43:37Caleb Hammer?

You were in the, the cut corner of the shower?

• 43:39Speaker 05

I, I guess. I don't know. I, I was very shy when I first joined the military. I was very shy, so I kinda like was reserved and I stayed back and they're like, oh, he's awkward. They're, they're, they're weird people.

• 43:50Caleb Hammer?

  Yes.

• 43:51Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 43:52Caleb Hammer?

  They are.

• 43:53Speaker 05

  But no, I'm trying to

• 43:54Caleb Hammer?

Oh, oh, we're still gonna, okay.

• 43:55Speaker 05

I'm just trying to argue with her and

• 43:59Speaker 05

  I have financial

• 44:00Caleb Hammer?

Are you sure she's actually even argued, or have you just argued at her?

• 44:04Speaker 05

  Hop.

• 44:07Speaker 05

  Say that again, sorry, Ken.

• 44:07Caleb Hammer?

What do you think your financial score would be, zero to 10, zero being the worst, 10 being the absolute best?

• 44:13Speaker 05

I would say, I did do the, I did do the, the test a year ago and it gave me a two, and I'm gonna disagree with that and I'm gonna say

• 44:22Caleb Hammer?

  Probably the mortgage.

• 44:23Speaker 05

I'm gonna say I'm at a two and a half.

• 44:25Caleb Hammer?

Okay, what makes that extra point five? And he's actually proud of this, look at him.

• 44:29Speaker 05

I'm actually pretty proud of that because I do have a budget plan in place. I'm not following it, but

• 44:34Caleb Hammer?

  What is the point then?

• 44:36Speaker 05

It is there, so it is there. Have a plan, so I have a plan, okay? So I have a plan. I have a good mortgage. There is something in retirement.

• 44:44Caleb Hammer?

What is the point of a plan without following it?

• 44:47Speaker 05

To give you a roadmap for when you are ready to initiate. I don't know. Like, get a plan.

• 44:53Caleb Hammer?

You're so far off the road though, buddy.

• 44:55Speaker 05

When I'm driving truck, it's like, I do a trip plan. Sure, I'll do a trip plan, but things can always go awry and things have to change. And that's, so a plan for me isn't 100% set in stone either, because there could be things that

• 45:10Speaker 05

hinder that but it is it's good still good to have a plan right

• 45:15Caleb Hammer?

Go on to Hammer Financial Score, take this quiz at CalebHammer.com, link below as well and you can go to CalebHammer.com/apply if you want to come on the show as well. And tell me about your weird fantasies in the military, I'll listen.

• 45:29Speaker 05

I don't have weird fantasies in the military.

• 45:32Caleb Hammer?

  Uh huh.

• 45:32Speaker 05

Except blowing people up, it's my job.

• 45:35Caleb Hammer?

That's the kind of blowing you're doing in the military, you sure?

• 45:37Speaker 05

  Oh, sure.

• 45:38Caleb Hammer?

Okay, so we have a Navy Federal Credit Union to remind us of all our good.

• 45:45Speaker 05

I also had to, in the credit card statements that you'll see, um, there are charges on there that my best friend accrued. But he.

• 45:55Caleb Hammer?

  Eating like weed or something?

• 45:56Speaker 05

  No.

• 45:56Caleb Hammer?

  What are you?

• 45:57Speaker 05

  It was.

• 45:58Caleb Hammer?

Why does your best friend have your credit card?

• 46:00Speaker 05

He's been my best friend, well, he had information to my credit card.

• 46:02Caleb Hammer?

  Best friend?

• 46:03Speaker 05

He's my best friend, he's been my best friend for many years.

• 46:05Caleb Hammer?

We also make jokes with him as well.

• 46:07Speaker 05

We do. He is a very left leaning and I'm more right leaning and so we.

• 46:12Caleb Hammer?

  So you're in denial.

• 46:13Speaker 05

We, but uh, he did have access to my credit card information. I let him use it for DoorDash, Uber in the past because I was making good enough money to be able to pay back and he would pay me back too. He would always pay me back, but he did have access to that and there are charges in there that he made that I did not make. I had to tell my wife about those because she knew I was coming on this show and I was like, I don't want you to see those charges and be like, those were mine because those were not my charges.

• 46:39Caleb Hammer?

I just want to ask like, I want to ask the producers, where do they find people like you? I don't remember everyone on the show's in the audience.

• 46:48Caleb Hammer?

• 47:56Speaker 05

I don't know how you find anybody in Idaho because-

• 47:58Caleb Hammer?

Why does your wife not know what's in your credit card?

• 48:00Speaker 05

Because I use it as my credit card, my responsibility.

• 48:04Caleb Hammer?

So, so in reality, these DoorDash's, you're probably actually doing them and you're hiding them from your wife.

• 48:11Speaker 05

My best friend is doing them.

• 48:12Caleb Hammer?

Why, but that's a weird thing, man. And then to hide it from your wife and have to tell her, wait, I'm hiding some DoorDash orders, but they're definitely not mine.

• 48:21Speaker 05

Well, they're not DoorDash. I do do DoorDash. But in the past, in the past, like I would let him use it for Uber.

• 48:27Caleb Hammer?

I'm coming on the show about the secret credit card that you have no idea what the purchases are. And now conveniently, guess what? If you do see purchases on the show, they're my best friend. Of DoorDashing. Yes, this is all, that definitely makes sense.

• 48:42Speaker 05

He doesn't have, he doesn't have access to the card anymore.

• 48:44Caleb Hammer?

The first, the first, what are you kidding me? The first purchase, are you gonna say this is your friend?

• 48:49Speaker 05

  It is.

• 48:50Caleb Hammer?

  OnlyFans?

• 48:50Speaker 05

  It is.

• 48:51Caleb Hammer?

  OF?

• 48:51Speaker 05

  It is.

• 48:52Caleb Hammer?

  The OF?

• 48:53Speaker 05

  Because I don't have OnlyFans. I don't.

• 48:55Caleb Hammer?

Sounds like someone in denial needing to look at something.

• 48:57Speaker 05

Have you seen my wife? You haven't seen my wife?

• 48:59Caleb Hammer?

  No.

• 49:00Speaker 05

Okay, she is drop dead gorgeous.

• 49:02Caleb Hammer?

Okay, let's see. I will tell you.

• 49:04Speaker 05

  Why would I ever?

• 49:05Caleb Hammer?

I will give you the brutal opinion of myself.

• 49:09Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 49:10Caleb Hammer?

  Cause that's how I live.

• 49:11Speaker 05

Okay, let me, let me find a photo of her that I-

• 49:14Caleb Hammer?

OF, at the beginning, $19 that my friend.

• 49:19Caleb Hammer?

Uh, yeah, oh, hold up. Sorry.

• 49:22Speaker 05

  Don't swipe.

• 49:23Caleb Hammer?

Well, I thought there was gonna be more pictures.

• 49:25Speaker 05

  No, don't swipe, Caleb.

• 49:26Caleb Hammer?

  Thank goodness it was clothes.

• 49:27Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 49:28Caleb Hammer?

  I'm sorry, you're right. I shouldn't have done that.

• 49:29Speaker 05

  Yeah, don't swipe.

• 49:30Caleb Hammer?

I'm instinctually a swiper for more pictures.

• 49:33Speaker 05

  If you want, I'll, I'll.

• 49:35Caleb Hammer?

That was the closest thing to a Mormon nude that there is. She was wearing jeans.

• 49:39Speaker 05

I will get you her Facebook instead, and then you can see more Caleb. Jeez.

• 49:46Caleb Hammer?

  I saw her jeans.

• 49:47Speaker 05

  It was just jeans, guys.

• 49:49Caleb Hammer?

  It was. It's...

• 49:50Speaker 05

  Jeez.

• 49:51Caleb Hammer?

I mean, yes, she is very attractive to men attracted to women.

• 49:56Speaker 05

So if you want to scroll through on her Facebook, all her photos.

• 50:02Caleb Hammer?

I mean, not my personal type, but that's okay. It doesn't matter. I could see, um, men who are interested in women being attracted to her.

• 50:08Speaker 05

Yeah, so why would I want to indulge in that?

• 50:12Caleb Hammer?

  Yes, why would you?

• 50:14Speaker 05

Why would I? Here's the thing too, Caleb, what you gotta understand is I don't pay for sex. I don't pay for sexual explicitly material. I don't pay for that.

• 50:22Caleb Hammer?

Only on top of your credit card that are conveniently, now that your wife has seen it for the very first time.

• 50:27Speaker 05

That is my, that is my best friend's credit, that credit card purchase. It is.

• 50:30Caleb Hammer?

  Uh huh.

• 50:31Speaker 05

  The reason, I don't.

• 50:32Caleb Hammer?

If I call him in the post-show, will he confirm it?

• 50:34Speaker 05

  He's at work.

• 50:35Caleb Hammer?

  Oh, he's at work?

• 50:36Speaker 05

  He's at work.

• 50:37Caleb Hammer?

People can't take calls at work?

• 50:39Speaker 05

Well, he probably could, but we probably could call him, but.

• 50:42Caleb Hammer?

  So I can call him?

• 50:44Speaker 05

  We probably.

• 50:45Caleb Hammer?

I could call him, and he will confirm this?

• 50:48Speaker 05

  He should.

• 50:49Caleb Hammer?

  He should?

• 50:50Speaker 05

Because he said, he purchased those. He did.

• 50:53Caleb Hammer?

  He did?

• 50:53Speaker 05

  I don't pay for that. I don't. Because if I did, if I, if I did, if I did.

• 50:57Caleb Hammer?

  Yeah?

• 50:58Speaker 05

I don't, I never went to a strip, I never went to a strip club in the Navy. My justification is if you want it, you can get it for free online, okay? You can get it for free online.

• 51:07Caleb Hammer?

  Yeah.

• 51:08Speaker 05

You can. So why would I purchase that?

• 51:11Caleb Hammer?

I thought your credit card, buddy, not mine. I don't know.

• 51:14Speaker 05

He had access to it. He doesn't have access to it anymore. Thank God, because I, he, he said he will pay me back next month for that.

• 51:24Speaker 05

  He did.

• 51:25Caleb Hammer?

Why is the card hidden from the wife then?

• 51:27Speaker 05

  I was pretty upset.

• 51:28Caleb Hammer?

Why is the card hidden from the wife?

• 51:30Speaker 05

  Fast food purchases, that's why.

• 51:31Caleb Hammer?

  Yeah?

• 51:32Speaker 05

  Yep. Yep.

• 51:35Speaker 05

You can, you can not believe me all you want.

• 51:37Caleb Hammer?

Oh, I'm gonna call him and find out, right?

• 51:40Speaker 05

  Right.

• 51:41Caleb Hammer?

  Yes, a hundred percent.

• 51:43Speaker 05

  Hundred percent.

• 51:44Caleb Hammer?

Eight thousand eight hundred thirty seven dollars and twenty six cents with a minimum monthly payment of two hundred fifteen dollars and seventy seven cents. Purchases of a thousand three hundred twenty three dollars and thirty three cents.

• 51:58Caleb Hammer?

That's insane, all for the OF.

• 52:00Speaker 05

  It's not, but it's not.

• 52:02Caleb Hammer?

Normally, I would say for the titty, I just don't think it's that case.

• 52:07Speaker 05

You could go through it and you'll see that not all one thousand dollars is because of that. Five hundred dollars of that is for tires for the car. Then there's like three, four hundred dollars for eating out. There is a subscription.

• 52:18Caleb Hammer?

What were you watching eating out?

• 52:20Speaker 05

I wasn't watching anybody eating out. I was eating. I was eating at the truck stop. I was eating the Arby's or the McDonald's or whatever.

• 52:28Caleb Hammer?

I don't know, people probably get pretty bored when they're parking at night in the truck.

• 52:31Speaker 05

They do, but that's why I have my wife, who we video call, and we will do that on a video call.

• 52:38Speaker 05

Why would I indulge in that if we can video call?

• 52:41Caleb Hammer?

Why would you hide it from her?

• 52:42Speaker 05

  Only the fast food purchases.

• 52:44Caleb Hammer?

  Why would you only?

• 52:45Speaker 05

  Only the fast food purchases.

• 52:47Caleb Hammer?

Conveniently, the one that gets us in a less trouble.

• 52:52Speaker 05

But I came clean about the fast food purchases.

• 52:54Caleb Hammer?

  About the fast food purchases?

• 52:55Speaker 05

And then I'd let her know too, that he had access to that card. She's known that he's.

• 53:00Caleb Hammer?

Listen buddy, telling your wife about, uh, like seeing the Nair video on, you know what that is, on OF is better than getting like a lot lizard, so.

• 53:13Speaker 05

It is, it is a lot safer in theory, but.

• 53:17Caleb Hammer?

In theory, I would say in action.

• 53:19Speaker 05

Yeah, but it's also, it is dishonest, it's unfaithful to do that to your wife.

• 53:26Caleb Hammer?

  OF or Lot Lizard?

• 53:27Speaker 05

The OF and the Lot Lizard's both.

• 53:29Caleb Hammer?

I would say, oh my gosh, guys, these purchases.

• 53:35Speaker 05

I have been approached by Lot Lizard one time, one time, it was in Amarillo.

• 53:41Speaker 05

But I said I had no money and she went on her merry way.

• 53:43Caleb Hammer?

If I open up your browser choice and go to the website of the OF,

• 53:50Caleb Hammer?

are you telling me there will not be a login and there will not be an autofill?

• 53:54Speaker 05

  There shouldn't be.

• 53:55Caleb Hammer?

  Shouldn't be?

• 53:56Speaker 05

No, there shouldn't be. Look, I'll show you. I'll show you. I only use a web browser of the Google Internet browser.

• 54:04Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, I don't want to get demonetized. We can check that in the post show.

• 54:06Speaker 05

You want to check in the post?

• 54:07Caleb Hammer?

  In the post.

• 54:11Caleb Hammer?

We might have to check every browser. How long do you think this takes to pay off?

• 54:15Speaker 05

I only have that one browser.

• 54:16Caleb Hammer?

How long do you think this takes to pay off only doing the minimum payment without purchases? Without OF purchases, which there are endless.

• 54:22Speaker 05

  I don't OF purchase, Caleb.

• 54:23Caleb Hammer?

On this credit card, there's a lot.

• 54:25Speaker 05

There is, but that was from my best friend.

• 54:27Caleb Hammer?

Of course it is. But either way, without the purchases, only the minimum payment, which is what you're doing, how long does it take to pay off?

• 54:36Speaker 05

  Minimum monthly.

• 54:38Caleb Hammer?

Cause you have a retirement plan, so.

• 54:39Speaker 05

  I do. Twenty-five, thirty years?

• 54:41Caleb Hammer?

Twenty-five, exactly. So you will be.

• 54:43Speaker 05

  Fifty.

• 54:44Caleb Hammer?

  Five.

• 54:45Speaker 05

  Fifty-six.

• 54:46Caleb Hammer?

  Six.

• 54:49Caleb Hammer?

Three years from being able to take money out of our tax advantage retirement account.

• 54:54Caleb Hammer?

Yes, we are. Our plan is working so well.

• 54:59Caleb Hammer?

  OF! McDonald's, Chick-fil-A. OF!

• 55:03Speaker 05

  That's my best friend.

• 55:04Caleb Hammer?

  OF!

• 55:04Speaker 05

  That's my best friend.

• 55:06Caleb Hammer?

  Burger King!

• 55:07Speaker 05

Yep, that was me eating out. Eating out.

• 55:08Caleb Hammer?

OF is your best friend with how many purchases? I agree. OF!

• 55:12Speaker 05

Why would I pay for that? Okay, but why would I pay for that, Caleb?

• 55:15Caleb Hammer?

Why would it be on the credit card of yours?

• 55:17Speaker 05

Because my best friend had it.

• 55:18Caleb Hammer?

  Of course. Yes, yes, yes.

• 55:19Speaker 05

  And he was.

• 55:19Caleb Hammer?

Grand View Country Store. OF! OF! OF! OF! OF! OF! OF! OF! OF! We mixed it up and went to, uh, Express Amusement and Jails Cause and Chick-fil-A and Arby's, but we're back, baby!

• 55:38Speaker 05

  We are.

• 55:39Caleb Hammer?

  Blue Jacketter!

• 55:40Speaker 05

That's not the only thing that's blue jacked on this, David. Blue Jacketter is a Navy app for me to study for my job.

• 55:47Caleb Hammer?

And then you studied what men's assholes look like on OF! McDonald's! McDonald's loves.

• 55:54Speaker 05

  And don't.

• 55:57Caleb Hammer?

  Carl's Jr. McDonald's loves Hardee's. You do love those Hardee's, don't you?

• 56:03Speaker 05

  I like Hardee's. Hardee's is good.

• 56:05Caleb Hammer?

  I know you do.

• 56:05Speaker 05

And Carl's Jr. And Chick-fil-A. I like eating out and I have my reasons for it.

• 56:11Speaker 05

Of course I do. In both ways.

• 56:18Speaker 05

  I love my wife.

• 56:19Caleb Hammer?

McDonald's, stinker. Eating out the stinker.

• 56:23Speaker 05

  That's a gas station.

• 56:23Caleb Hammer?

Winning got some BS. McDonald's, we're back, baby. OF, OF. Doesn't BS, stinker, McDonald's.

• 56:30Speaker 05

I was pretty upset when I saw that because I know my friend typically, my friend shouldn't have been spending that much. And he did, and he did. And I'm upset, but he said he'd pay me back, so.

• 56:40Caleb Hammer?

  $238.86 of our friends. OF.

• 56:46Speaker 05

And he's paying that back as soon as he gets his tax return. He, for soon, I don't know exactly when, but probably about that time.

• 56:52Caleb Hammer?

  It's tax debt, OF.

• 56:54Speaker 05

And he doesn't have access to the card anymore because his phone blew up, so he doesn't have that credit card information.

• 56:59Caleb Hammer?

Oh, his phone blew up, so we can't call him?

• 57:01Speaker 05

Well, no. He got a new phone but lost the credit card that was attached to it, so he doesn't have that anymore. We're good. We're good. So he doesn't have that. So now the only purchase that should be on my credit card are fast food.

• 57:13Caleb Hammer?

Wife, I think you have an interesting conversation to have. Oh, wait, I think we're calling her later in this episode. Spotify, Arby's, Winning Got Some BS, GameStop.

• 57:23Speaker 05

  Spotify's important.

• 57:23Caleb Hammer?

Vending machine, vending machine. I would do Spotify in your position. I get it. Winning got some BS, winning got some BS, winning got some BS. Interest $127.77. That's insanity in just one month. And you're afraid of overdrafting, but you're accruing interest for OF.

• 57:41Speaker 05

That my friend is gonna pay me back for.

• 57:42Caleb Hammer?

But it is still on your card regardless.

• 57:44Speaker 05

  I know. I get it.

• 57:45Caleb Hammer?

  Even if I believed you.

• 57:46Speaker 05

  I know.

• 57:47Caleb Hammer?

I think a Mormon has a lot to lose.

• 57:50Speaker 05

We do have a lot to lose. That's why those are not my purchases, Caleb.

• 57:55Speaker 05

The fast food is. The blue jacket here is. The car.

• 57:58Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, get her on the phone.

• 58:00Speaker 05

  Call my wife right now.

• 58:01Caleb Hammer?

  Sure.

• 58:02Speaker 05

  And tell her what?

• 58:03Caleb Hammer?

I think I'm going to talk to her.

• 58:07Speaker 05

All right, we can try. She might be on her way to work.

• 58:11Caleb Hammer?

  We'll double call.

• 58:13Speaker 05

  Put it on speaker.

• 58:14Caleb Hammer?

  Yes. To me.

• 58:22Caleb Hammer?

  Hello, wifey, how are you?

• 58:27Speaker 06

Not too bad, I'm on my way to work.

• 58:29Caleb Hammer?

Cool, so I think we gave you a heads up that we might be calling you since this conversation involves you. Just a quick little Mormon conversation real quick if we could. Um, I know he hid this credit card from you, right? His special little credit card and the purchases on it, right?

• 58:45Speaker 06

Yeah, part of it he did and I was like not happy about it because it happened I think like twice.

• 58:50Caleb Hammer?

Twice, okay, wow. Um, that's great, so he seems like a man who hides things sometimes.

• 58:59Speaker 06

Yeah, I mean, he only did it twice, but every time it was like devastating because I'm like...

• 59:03Caleb Hammer?

Well, twice is a lot. Did you confer-

• 59:06Speaker 06

And I mean like, yeah, like he would be like, I think he was like, "I'm ashamed to tell you," I'm like, "Yeah, but you've got to be honest with me because if you're not, that's going to hurt our merch, it will hurt our merch and like, I don't need that, I don't want that and I don't want our merch to be based on that. Um, but I know like he's trying his best to do better and that's why I know he's glad he's out there because I feel like he, it's like I need this from him and I'm like, "I think you do too."

• 59:28Caleb Hammer?

So he's a perpetual hider of things and lying about the things he is hiding. So of these two times, after you confronted him the first time, he's making a shocked face. "How are you Pikachu facing me after what we just went through? Are you kidding me? After what she just said, come on." Well, I'm talking to wifey. Uh, on these conversations on the things that it's for, do you know the purchases on this credit card?

• 59:53Speaker 06

I know of most, like the big ones, I know of those, um...

• 59:57Caleb Hammer?

  Like what?

• 59:57Speaker 06

I'm gonna say he's a perpetual liar though, he's only done that twice, I feel like that's-

• 1:00:02Caleb Hammer?

That's a pattern. Especially after confronting the first time, then he does it again. But either way, so you know some big purchases on here, what purchases on this credit card? That he's hidden from you?

• 1:00:15Speaker 06

I think like mostly like the fast food habit, I know that that can be a bad habit of him, has he improved over the years? Yes, he has, I've seen improvement. Um, I know that when he's out there, we have like a rule of like, you can eat out like once a week, I eat out twice a week. The only reason I do it twice is because my job will pay for it.

• 1:00:32Caleb Hammer?

Well, I think he's, unfortunately, I do need to let you know, I think he's imagining eating something else out because he spent almost $300 on this credit card on only-

• 1:00:44Speaker 06

He said that that was his friend.

• 1:00:46Caleb Hammer?

He sure did say that. That is my friend Caleb. After he-

• 1:00:49Speaker 06

I tr- I tr- I trust him on that. I know-

• 1:00:52Caleb Hammer?

I want to. Okay, so, this entire conversation here, he came into this saying, he wants me to be on his side to show, to show you that we should be listening to him for his financial wisdom, for his financial plan for the household. But literally, he hasn't said one thing that actually makes sense. He's the one that pulled from his retirement fund. He is the one that invested in AMC. He is the one that is spending $2,000 than the household brings in on a monthly basis. I don't know what to do in this conversation. This phone call was supposed to be the phone call where I honestly kinda confront you and say, "Hey, I think it's time to listen to this guy." But I don't know what to do with this guy in front of me

• 1:01:36Caleb Hammer?

because he does nothing right with finances, but all he does is argue to you about finances.

• 1:01:43Speaker 06

So Caleb, um, so I'm betting our- I have- I am- I'm betting the Toyota Camry right now. We've had this car for about, gosh, I don't remember, five, maybe years. Um, and the thing I'm really pushing is him is I want to keep it because Caleb, this car will be ours in two years. We've sunk so much money into it-

• 1:02:01Caleb Hammer?

That's the biggest argument he has with me.

• 1:02:02Speaker 06

So much time into it, so much effort into it that I think it'd be stupid at this point to get rid of it when I trust her and she's reliable. Like, I want us to have two reliable cars. Why? Because he has to go to drill every week. One weekend per month he goes to drill. I want him to be safe. If he's driving the car to Doug Andrews, that's fine. It's only 30 minutes. And I mean, I drive- I commute to work every day, except for Thursday and Sunday. Um, usually I don't go anywhere those days. Um, but I'd like to keep her. The Corolla, that's- it's a huge mess. But the Camry, I'd like to keep her, but it's like, well, I don't want to because what if we get a cheaper monthly payment? Yeah, we get a cheaper monthly payment, but we might run into the same things that we did with the CRV that we had, where I ended up sinking $3,000 into it that I could've used to go to school.

• 1:02:44Speaker 06

Had to use it on the CRV and stuff because that SUV we have was dying. I want to keep this car, but I know I don't even know. Like, I don't know if that's stupid for me to want to keep it or smart. I just know that we almost own the thing. And I know that once we own it, we'll- we won't be upside down as much. I don't want to continue to be upside down on cars. I don't want to do it.

• 1:03:02Caleb Hammer?

Well, I'm trying to get through to him. You know him more than me. You guys have been together for a while. You guys have kids together. Can- are you crying?

• 1:03:10Speaker 06

No, I I I felt a little bit irritated. I I'm kind of losing my voice a little bit. I'm okay.

• 1:03:15Caleb Hammer?

Okay, um, uh, so I want to just know just how you think I should approach this conversation with everything you know. Cause everything we have talked about, he has acted so arrogant. He has acted like he is the person of superiority on this subject and that he just, he's right. He's right on everything, right on everything. What do I do here?

• 1:03:40Speaker 06

So yesterday, I'll be honest here, we did have an issue with this. Like, I felt like, I felt like my feelings didn't matter. And you know, my husband, he can't be arrogant. He can't have a pride problem. I've tried to stem it. Um, if I'm with him and I'm actually next to him, it's easier for me to stem it and cut it off, but I'm not there. I'm kind of right now. Um, and you know, I've told him, I'm like, he told me that he wanted to go into this listening. And the other day, we kind of had an argument in the morning where he was like, well, he's probably gonna tell us this. I'm like, you don't know if he's gonna tell us this. You don't know if he's gonna tell us that. And I'm so sad on this because this car we almost owned it. It's almost ours. You have to pay out the ass for it, but it's almost ours. It's not French.

• 1:04:22Speaker 06

I'm like, he's like, then what's even the point of going on to show? I'm like, it's because I know that he could help us. And that's what he said he wanted to go. And he didn't want to go, I think, to argue with you. He wanted to go in so that you could give him advice, so you could help him. So I don't know why he's being so arrogant and difficult. I don't really know. But I wish that he would shush his mouth and listen to you because you're a professional in this. I love Rex and I told him to feel bad when I'm saying this, but he needs to settle it and listen. And whatever you say, we can try to go with that. I don't know why he's being conch you this much. Um, but I know that he can have an arrogance problem, pride problem. He thought everything was right, but it's not. Cause I have an opinion. And like yesterday, I felt like my feelings didn't matter. My opinion didn't matter. I'm like,

• 1:05:08Speaker 06

This is our going in and what's going on. I just want to be a part of that.

• 1:05:11Caleb Hammer?

  I mean.

• 1:05:12Speaker 06

I just want to be a part of it because I'm not going to be treated like I'm a housewife. I'm, I have a mom and I also work and it's the 21st century. So like, I'm not going to be treated like this is the reason I can't say anything. And like, yeah, my religion, like we're Mormon and like, I'm not gonna like let my religion, I'm not traditional. I'm not traditional. I love my faith. I love being a Mormon. But I'm not like this super submissive, quiet type that just kind of lets things happen. No, I want to be a part of it and I want to know what's going on because if I don't know what's going on, I'm, it's going to make me anxious. It's going to stress me out because I'm like, I'm making money too. I want to make sure that we're okay. Whatever's going on, we can figure this out. Like.

• 1:05:51Caleb Hammer?

  So I've learned.

• 1:05:52Speaker 06

  At these bars especially.

• 1:05:54Caleb Hammer?

I've learned four things from this conversation. You guys fight all the time about money. He's pretty arrogant. His friend purchases a lot of OnlyFans and he and all his male friends giggle and make jokes about being gay together. Uh, so there's interesting little things here. Uh, but this is what I'm going to do. I'm going to get you guys both on the simpler budget app. I think that is going to be good. Help you manage this a little better with the automatic connections. Go through the financial education together. Going to gift you both all of our debt class, our debt class, our budget class, our investing class. You guys are going to go through all of it together. You get it for free. I'm going to have him go to therapy if he's not already. I'm going to give him three free therapy sessions with our partner, Sondermind.

• 1:06:36Caleb Hammer?

So there's a lot of resources and stuff here, but hopefully he comes back with a plan. We're going to make a plan by the end of this. I hope if we can make it through this episode. But that's what I've learned so far. And then on the little naughty little subject of that OF, I'm going to call his friend in the post show and actually make sure it is. And we will let you know the answer. Okay.

• 1:07:00Speaker 06

Alright, yeah, I just, I don't know, like, cuz my husband, like, he told me, he's like, I want advice, I wanna be grilled, because I feel like if I'm grilled, it will help me get more into like, line of my finances, but it sounds like the opposite is happening here. I'm not there, so I can't really, you know, a hundred percent for sure, but...

• 1:07:16Speaker 05

  It could be.

• 1:07:18Speaker 06

It sounds like he's being really difficult for you, and I wasn't, I wasn't expecting that.

• 1:07:22Caleb Hammer?

Well, here's the thing. Um, it's not just him, it's basically everyone that comes on the show. People come on the show, they're on camera for the first time in their life, they're just normal people. And also, it's their first time, they're getting real pushback, and I go pretty hard. And naturally, that can oftentimes have people, you know, kinda bring out that side of them. But by the end, I like to see that finally start to make it through. And that's what I'm hoping to see with him, but, uh, we'll do that, okay? I'm gonna...

• 1:07:49Speaker 06

Yeah, cuz if he, like, if he's hearing me right now, I don't want him to, like, be super pissed at me.

• 1:07:54Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, I'm gonna have him pull up his magic underwear, and he's gonna face this like a man.

• 1:07:59Speaker 05

She doesn't like being hung up on. She doesn't like it when I do that.

• 1:08:03Caleb Hammer?

  Okay, so that's interesting.

• 1:08:07Caleb Hammer?

Uh, let's talk about the cars.

• 1:08:10Speaker 05

Let's talk about them. And why they're the mess that they are.

• 1:08:14Caleb Hammer?

What's, which one is this, one that she specifically really cares about?

• 1:08:18Speaker 05

The Camry. So that's probably that one right there.

• 1:08:21Caleb Hammer?

Okay, why don't we start with this one first? And we'll get to that. So this is a 2022 Toyota Corolla.

• 1:08:26Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 1:08:28Caleb Hammer?

So as many of you know, I've been a big supporter of Course Careers for a long time. I'm not just a partner, I actually own stock and I'm an investor. So why did I partner with Course Careers? Because I truly believe in what they're doing. A lot of people have questions about online certifications versus traditional college degrees. Let me be clear, I wouldn't put my name behind something unless I knew it worked. The thing is, not everyone has the time or resources to spend four years in college or take on massive student loan debt. Course Careers offers a practical, affordable way to launch a career in a high-demand field like tech sales, IT, and accounting, where companies are hiring based on the skills needed, not broad college degrees. In fact, right now, one in- Three companies are dropping degree requirements and that number is only going to continue to grow.

• 1:09:13Caleb Hammer?

I know some people think online programs are a quick fix, but that's not the case here. Course Careers takes effort and commitment, but they provide you with a streamlined, proven path. They offer up-to-date, self-paced courses, one-on-one or group coaching from people that work in the industry. And most importantly, they help you actually get hired. Just look at graduates like Namesso, who went from driving FedEx trucks to a cybersecurity job at Disney. That didn't happen by chance. He put in the work and Course Careers guided him every step of the way. And what truly sets Course Careers apart is that it's not just about learning skills, but landing a job. Their curriculum is designed based on what employers actually need, and their network of industry coaches will guide you through the entire process,

• 1:09:55Caleb Hammer?

from learning the skills to interviewing, resume help, and beyond. So if you're serious about starting a new career without wasting years or piling up debt, give Course Careers a try. Start with their free intro course linked in the description to explore your options. And when you're ready, use the link in the description for $50 off the full course. Your future starts right now and Course Careers is here to help you shape it. All right, we owe on here $34,323.45 with a minimum monthly payment of...

• 1:10:31Caleb Hammer?

  Oh, yeah, that's, I mean, that's a ton of money. $562.26.

• 1:10:37Caleb Hammer?

Okay, with a 7.5% interest rate, so you're barely keeping up with the market, even while I buy like the overall market in the investing app I use, MuMu. It's not getting that. I mean, it's getting a little more than that, but with depreciation and everything, doesn't even matter. How much is this car worth?

• 1:10:54Speaker 05

I think I just looked at it the other day. It's only worth like 20.

• 1:10:57Caleb Hammer?

  It's worth 20. So you're underwater by $14,000.

• 1:11:01Speaker 05

  And I will explain that.

• 1:11:04Speaker 05

Hey, so. I was driving, we were, we were driving a 2010 Honda CR-V. That was my beater car to get me to and from. My long haul job that I had at the time. I was driving a 2010 Honda CR-V to get me to and from out of falls back like boom boom junky beater car that's only commuting a little bit of miles. And then it started to run into problems with how much I was driving and then with the local job with eight hundred miles that I was or eight hundred dollars worth of gas I was putting in and all the miles I was putting on. All the maintenance and it was costing us a lot. Like we had to spend three thousand dollars on a car repair for it.

• 1:11:39Caleb Hammer?

So to be clear, we had to get a nearly forty thousand dollar car. That's the only option.

• 1:11:42Speaker 05

  I. My justification behind that was getting a more reliable vehicle.

• 1:11:47Caleb Hammer?

I like reliable. Do I like forty thousand dollars?

• 1:11:49Speaker 05

I don't like it either. And that's why I was trying to negotiate with the dealership to get it as low as we. Maybe we talked him down from eight hundred to five hundred. So I mean.

• 1:11:57Caleb Hammer?

Eight hundred dollars a month. They probably extended the turn.

• 1:11:59Speaker 05

  Yeah, they did, but.

• 1:12:01Caleb Hammer?

That's not talking them down. They made more money. They made more money.

• 1:12:04Speaker 05

In my mind, it's less money going out.

• 1:12:07Caleb Hammer?

It is, but that's how people justify longer terms and paying more money.

• 1:12:10Speaker 05

That's the position that I'm in right now where the finances aren't the way they are.

• 1:12:14Caleb Hammer?

  You put yourself in.

• 1:12:15Speaker 05

  Exactly.

• 1:12:16Caleb Hammer?

No, no, but it's not correct. Don't try to justify being.

• 1:12:18Speaker 05

So it costs three thousand dollars to fix the car. It had all those problems. It had three thousand dollars to fix it.

• 1:12:22Caleb Hammer?

  Saying do that.

• 1:12:23Speaker 05

And then the problems started to come up again like two months later. And it's like, I don't know. I don't know how much I could keep putting three thousand dollars onto this car.

• 1:12:30Caleb Hammer?

Not much more. I wouldn't say to. I'm not defending that.

• 1:12:33Speaker 05

So it's like, I need something safe and reliable. And so we went to.

• 1:12:36Caleb Hammer?

But you went to forty thousand.

• 1:12:37Speaker 05

  We did.

• 1:12:38Caleb Hammer?

There's in between even twenty thousand is incredible.

• 1:12:40Speaker 05

We did that is for reliability and less, less in gas, less in maintenance, less.

• 1:12:44Caleb Hammer?

I know why you did it. It was a dumb decision.

• 1:12:48Speaker 05

I get it. I get it.

• 1:12:50Caleb Hammer?

And now you can't even sell it and borrow the difference.

• 1:12:52Speaker 05

Probably not. Maybe with the Camry, but not with that. But my wife wants to keep the Camry. So we're kind of stuck with this for a couple of years, at least a couple of years.

• 1:13:01Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, we'll see. And the interest rates brutal. The minimum monthly payment is brutal. When did you get this?

• 1:13:06Speaker 05

I got it in November. Veterans day.

• 1:13:10Caleb Hammer?

Fourteen fucking thousand dollars. What a way to treat a. Real veteran.

• 1:13:18Speaker 05

We did something that was gonna be reliable, that was gonna get me to my next drill, that was gonna get me to my job and and I knew I could pay it because I was getting a different job at that point.

• 1:13:26Caleb Hammer?

Fourteen thousand dollar in the hole on this car in just, what, what is it, four months?

• 1:13:33Speaker 05

  Just four months.

• 1:13:34Caleb Hammer?

  Oh my that's insane.

• 1:13:37Speaker 05

That's the problem that I've run into.

• 1:13:38Caleb Hammer?

What was your shopping, what did you even do? Did you shop around?

• 1:13:41Speaker 05

I, I, I went online to see kinda like, I wanted to get another Prius to drive because I know that they're good on gas and they're good on maintenance and they last a long time and there was nothing on the lot, so they rolled up with I guess their cheapest vehicle and I guess it wasn't and

• 1:13:56Caleb Hammer?

So, did you go to another dealership?

• 1:13:58Speaker 05

  No, but we

• 1:13:59Caleb Hammer?

  Oh, you

• 1:14:00Speaker 05

  We

• 1:14:01Caleb Hammer?

No, no, no wonder why you got an expensive way

• 1:14:04Speaker 05

But we did try to push back on it and that's why we did.

• 1:14:06Caleb Hammer?

Doesn't matter, doesn't matter. You got the term extended and you're paying more in interest long term.

• 1:14:10Speaker 05

  My mindset is the

• 1:14:12Caleb Hammer?

  Broken.

• 1:14:13Speaker 05

The smaller the bill, it's broken. Yeah, no, it's the smaller the bill that goes out, the more we're able to afford it.

• 1:14:20Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, or you could have done half the term, same minimum monthly payment, same interest rate, half the price of a car and you would have been fine if you shopped around. You didn't shop around, you didn't put effort into this. No, you said you went to one dealership.

• 1:14:34Speaker 05

I did, but I did went go to one dealership, but I did look at

• 1:14:37Caleb Hammer?

And they brought out the cheapest.

• 1:14:38Speaker 05

Because I wanted, there was a certain car that I was looking for. I wanted a Prius, they didn't have a Prius.

• 1:14:42Caleb Hammer?

So you go to a different place?

• 1:14:44Speaker 05

I probably should have, Caleb, but you know what? When

• 1:14:48Caleb Hammer?

My, my concern, you already did this, I'm not gonna bash you for doing this, that's not what I'm doing here. What I am concerned about is it is not getting through to you. You are still willing to justify it, meaning the next time you fall into this position, you will do the exact same thing.

• 1:15:03Speaker 05

  Not anymore.

• 1:15:04Caleb Hammer?

I don't think so based on your language and your justification.

• 1:15:08Speaker 05

Get, that's why, part of the reason why we come here, why I came here is to

• 1:15:11Caleb Hammer?

  That's why I'm here.

• 1:15:13Speaker 05

Get a guidance essentially, I need

• 1:15:15Caleb Hammer?

I'm trying and you're trying to defend it!

• 1:15:17Speaker 05

This is why, I also tried to get on a year ago and I didn't get on a year ago. If I would have gotten on a year ago, there may have been a more clear path forward.

• 1:15:25Caleb Hammer?

Our beautiful producer Lindsay wasn't here, I can't explain.

• 1:15:28Speaker 05

Okay, she wasn't here, you can't explain, I can't explain. I tried. Finances were a lot better, we needed a navigator at that point.

• 1:15:35Caleb Hammer?

  They were better finances?

• 1:15:37Speaker 05

  They were better.

• 1:15:38Caleb Hammer?

Probably why you weren't on the show, dumb

• 1:15:41Speaker 05

Probably, probably. And, and, and that's why I'm here too is my finances are shot, but I have a plan. I have a plan. I want to say I have a plan.

• 1:15:53Caleb Hammer?

Your magical, special plan. Step by step, give me the plan in bullets from beginning to end, what the plan is.

• 1:16:03Speaker 05

So I got my new job.

• 1:16:07Speaker 05

With a 401k. For retirement that I'm setting aside.

• 1:16:13Caleb Hammer?

  How much?

• 1:16:14Speaker 05

  3%. With a 1% match.

• 1:16:19Speaker 05

Well, 1.5% because it's 50% of what I invest. So 4.5%. So that's going to start saving up for retirement. We are going to try to stick to our budget.

• 1:16:30Caleb Hammer?

Okay, that's our plan is try to stick to our budget.

• 1:16:34Speaker 05

Yep, try to stick to our budget, which I laid out, which we-

• 1:16:38Caleb Hammer?

Your income on a monthly basis again is what?

• 1:16:41Speaker 05

  Well, it's-

• 1:16:41Caleb Hammer?

  4,900, right?

• 1:16:42Speaker 05

  With the new-

• 1:16:43Caleb Hammer?

  Pre-taxes, pre-taxes?

• 1:16:44Speaker 05

  After taxes about 49.

• 1:16:45Caleb Hammer?

  Pre-taxes?

• 1:16:46Speaker 05

  Yep, and then my wife-

• 1:16:46Caleb Hammer?

  Pre-tax is how much?

• 1:16:49Speaker 05

  Pre-tax, I bring in

• 1:16:56Speaker 05

  about 5,400.

• 1:16:57Caleb Hammer?

  Okay, keep going.

• 1:16:58Speaker 05

Okay. Uh, my wife is going to be starting phlebotomy school this year.

• 1:17:04Caleb Hammer?

  Lebotomy school?

• 1:17:05Speaker 05

  Lebotomy.

• 1:17:07Speaker 05

Plasma. Needle in the arm. So my wife wants to start phlebotomy school.

• 1:17:17Speaker 05

And then we also have a plan to set aside excess funds

• 1:17:23Speaker 05

  to tackle-

• 1:17:24Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, what is that plan? I'm having you talk about the plan. Don't say a part of the plan is a plan.

• 1:17:28Speaker 05

Okay, well, I mean, the, the, the plan, I-

• 1:17:31Caleb Hammer?

Oh, don't put that away. You're writing out your plan. I need you to, I need to see what this looks like.

• 1:17:35Speaker 05

  To tackle debt this year.

• 1:17:37Caleb Hammer?

You have how much in retirement again? Remind me, 500?

• 1:17:39Speaker 05

  I've got 300.

• 1:17:40Caleb Hammer?

  Right.

• 1:17:42Speaker 05

Or it might be 400. Uh, excess funds to tackle the debt and I mean, this is a plan that we've got for the next.

• 1:17:49Caleb Hammer?

That's your plan is you have a plan?

• 1:17:50Speaker 05

Well, the plan is to, my 401K is getting invested in.

• 1:17:54Caleb Hammer?

  Uh, three percent plus 1.5.

• 1:17:56Speaker 05

Yep, we're gonna stick to our budget this.

• 1:17:58Caleb Hammer?

You were gonna try to stick to your budget is what you said.

• 1:17:59Speaker 05

It's really hard when you're out on the road and you're driving 10, 11 hours a day and the last thing you wanna do is cook a meal and then clean up after it. This is the last thing you want to do.

• 1:18:05Caleb Hammer?

So, when, so when we put, we put our little happiness.

• 1:18:08Speaker 05

  I don't have a kitchen in this.

• 1:18:09Caleb Hammer?

So when we put our little happiness over our kids' future, would you like to know, by the way, how much you'll have in retirement?

• 1:18:17Caleb Hammer?

I'll tell ya. If it follows the market, if the market continues, about 300,000 dollars a year, uh, 300, 300,000 dollars by the time you retire. 300,000 dollars, that's not enough for you and.

• 1:18:26Speaker 05

Not enough yet, but that's assuming no raises either.

• 1:18:28Caleb Hammer?

That's assuming no raises, but this is where your plan has you. Fine, let's assume an extra 1% just for raises, compounding. Cool, and you got to 371,000.

• 1:18:38Speaker 05

  Which is something.

• 1:18:39Caleb Hammer?

Sure, but that's worth 150,000 dollars today. That's what your entire retirement would be, according to your plan.

• 1:18:45Speaker 05

  It's a plan.

• 1:18:46Caleb Hammer?

  That's not, yes, you're right, that's a plan, it's a dumbass plan.

• 1:18:49Speaker 05

  Coming from zero over there.

• 1:18:50Caleb Hammer?

Wasn't zero, it was like 9,000 dollars or something. It wasn't zero.

• 1:18:55Speaker 05

  Well, close to zero.

• 1:18:57Caleb Hammer?

Nope, it was 9,000 dollars. Uh, take that, if you don't add anything else, keep that 8%, let's just do general market, you had about 9,000 dollars in retirement. That within itself would have been 83,913 dollars. Not nothing.

• 1:19:13Caleb Hammer?

And then, uh, part three, remind me, part three of the plan? Is this your entire plan?

• 1:19:17Speaker 05

It's the bulk majority. There are other plans to get more money.

• 1:19:21Caleb Hammer?

Oh, there's plans, plans, plans in the plans of the plans. So, say part three one more time, I have it here for the camera.

• 1:19:27Speaker 05

So the wife to start school and earn more money. That's part three right there.

• 1:19:34Caleb Hammer?

That's our entire three-part plan is

• 1:19:36Speaker 05

  Well, it's a start.

• 1:19:37Caleb Hammer?

4.5% to retirement. Wife starts school.

• 1:19:40Speaker 05

  But I can increase that.

• 1:19:41Caleb Hammer?

  Access funds to tackle debt.

• 1:19:43Speaker 05

As we pay down our debts, I can start putting more towards our retirement. And I probably would.

• 1:19:47Caleb Hammer?

Part four of excess funds tackled to the debt doesn't exist if we don't follow part two, which is stick to our budget. Even if you spend, get more money from the wifey. If you don't follow the stick to our budget, there is no excess funds. And you spend $2,000 more than you make. I, this plan seems to be a broken. I think in order, I think part zero of this plan is learn how to budget first.

• 1:20:14Speaker 05

Trying to learn and the stuff that I'm trying to learn, I can't teach her because she doesn't understand it like I do. She doesn't understand the math.

• 1:20:21Caleb Hammer?

That's why you're going through the budgeting class together.

• 1:20:22Speaker 05

That's what I want her to do. I want her to take it with me because maybe then she could see it. Maybe then she will understand it. And I hope she does because I'm tired of fighting her with, fighting her on this.

• 1:20:33Caleb Hammer?

Well, it shouldn't be a fucking, you are fighting at her. I can tell from your personality.

• 1:20:38Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:20:40Speaker 05

Agreed, it is, agreed. Agreed, it is, I. I think, she did say that I am pretty pride, I am, and a lot of that does come.

• 1:20:48Caleb Hammer?

Oh, she said the same thing I did?

• 1:20:50Speaker 05

  Yeah, she said.

• 1:20:50Caleb Hammer?

  Oh, who would have thought?

• 1:20:51Speaker 05

Well, about that, I'm pretty prideful and arrogant and I am.

• 1:20:54Caleb Hammer?

  Who would have?

• 1:20:55Speaker 05

A lot of that comes from my military background. I like to tout that I've got the best job in the Navy, so. Of course, I am prideful of that.

• 1:21:04Caleb Hammer?

  What, the cut corner?

• 1:21:05Speaker 05

  No. I build bombs.

• 1:21:10Caleb Hammer?

  Cool.

• 1:21:10Speaker 05

  For the aircraft.

• 1:21:11Caleb Hammer?

  Please don't leave one here.

• 1:21:13Speaker 05

Have you seen Top Gun Maverick?

• 1:21:14Caleb Hammer?

  I haven't, but.

• 1:21:15Speaker 05

I was on that ship, so.

• 1:21:17Caleb Hammer?

Good, good, good. Oh, this is the one she wants to keep at 17,000?

• 1:21:21Speaker 05

Yeah, that's the one she wants to keep.

• 1:21:23Caleb Hammer?

Okay, 26, okay, so this is Toyota what?

• 1:21:26Speaker 05

  Toyota Camry.

• 1:21:27Caleb Hammer?

  Camry, year?

• 1:21:28Speaker 05

  21.

• 1:21:29Caleb Hammer?

Okay, minimum monthly payment is 332?

• 1:21:31Speaker 05

  No. 665.

• 1:21:33Caleb Hammer?

  That's a bi-weekly payment?

• 1:21:34Speaker 05

So I paid a little extra when we first got it and so I like messed it up a little bit.

• 1:21:40Caleb Hammer?

  665.98, the minimum monthly?

• 1:21:42Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 1:21:42Caleb Hammer?

And this, okay, well, I don't know if I 100% agree with her. You might both be wrong. Never mind, it's worth.

• 1:21:49Speaker 05

If we're both wrong, please educate me because that's.

• 1:21:51Caleb Hammer?

  It's worth $19,000.

• 1:21:56Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, no, I'm selling this using $2,000 of it, borrowing $8,000 and getting a $10,000 car that you shop around for and get approved by like two mechanics.

• 1:22:07Speaker 05

She will not want to get rid of it.

• 1:22:08Caleb Hammer?

Well, maybe that's why she's not here and maybe you guys aren't compatible.

• 1:22:13Speaker 05

  We are compatible.

• 1:22:14Caleb Hammer?

  Financially.

• 1:22:14Speaker 05

  Financially, maybe not, but.

• 1:22:16Caleb Hammer?

Also one of the leading, also one of the leading reasons for divorce in this country. What is the interest rate on this car?

• 1:22:20Speaker 05

  It's 4%.

• 1:22:22Caleb Hammer?

I like that part. Wait, if you're hearing it.

• 1:22:24Speaker 05

  It might be 2%.

• 1:22:25Caleb Hammer?

Wife, if you're hearing this, we can take this from a $17,000 debt to a $8,000 debt that speeds up our entire process. You're dramatically behind on retirement. I would sell this. I hope she does.

• 1:22:36Speaker 05

  I'll let her know.

• 1:22:37Caleb Hammer?

  Well, show her this, right?

• 1:22:39Speaker 05

  She won't watch it.

• 1:22:40Caleb Hammer?

  Why?

• 1:22:41Speaker 05

  She thinks you're an.

• 1:22:42Caleb Hammer?

  I am.

• 1:22:43Speaker 05

  She will not watch it.

• 1:22:44Caleb Hammer?

  Why?

• 1:22:45Speaker 05

  Cause she thinks you're.

• 1:22:46Caleb Hammer?

It's not a good reason. That's still correct when I'm saying.

• 1:22:49Speaker 05

  That's why she's.

• 1:22:50Caleb Hammer?

Okay, well, just show her this part and tell her to stop being a little baby.

• 1:22:53Speaker 05

I will. I'll show her this part.

• 1:22:57Caleb Hammer?

  Okay.

• 1:22:58Speaker 05

It might be a 2% though, on the interest rate on that.

• 1:23:01Caleb Hammer?

  2%?

• 1:23:02Speaker 05

  2.7 or 2.9.

• 1:23:03Caleb Hammer?

  Yeah, I mean, that's delicious.

• 1:23:05Speaker 05

We got a good interest rate on it.

• 1:23:07Caleb Hammer?

Okay, I see a checking account here. Nope. Yes, yes. Checking $2,791. You're just super afraid of overdrafting?

• 1:23:17Speaker 05

I don't want it to ever hit zero. My mentality, if I see zero, it's gone and.

• 1:23:25Speaker 05

  So I don't.

• 1:23:26Caleb Hammer?

  What's her current job?

• 1:23:28Speaker 05

  She works at Chick-fil-A.

• 1:23:29Caleb Hammer?

Okay, and she wants to do the blood thing?

• 1:23:32Speaker 05

  Hmm, yep.

• 1:23:33Caleb Hammer?

I was gonna gift her a course career certification. You know, I love them, but I don't think they have one for that. They're more trades related and tech related.

• 1:23:39Speaker 05

The bottom is kind of a trade, but they probably don't have.

• 1:23:42Caleb Hammer?

  Well, they probably don't have.

• 1:23:42Speaker 05

  They probably don't.

• 1:23:43Caleb Hammer?

I'll, I'll talk to my boys over there. Okay, we got an Apple bill. Apple bill, common sense.

• 1:23:49Speaker 05

That's a gas station. And Apple bills are.

• 1:23:53Caleb Hammer?

  Fat cats?

• 1:23:54Speaker 05

Fat cats is a movie theater.

• 1:23:56Caleb Hammer?

  $32, okay.

• 1:23:57Speaker 05

  We had to go.

• 1:23:58Caleb Hammer?

Venmoing out $52. Where the fuck does that go? Then Chick-fil-A, I think she's supposed to be making money from them.

• 1:24:03Speaker 05

The Venmo might be to a babysitter.

• 1:24:04Caleb Hammer?

  McDonald's.

• 1:24:08Caleb Hammer?

What? But you have the childcare of like

• 1:24:10Speaker 05

We pay our babysitters through Venmo.

• 1:24:13Caleb Hammer?

Okay McDonald's, Amazon, Amazon, Amazon PayPal out. Mint Mobile, that's good, I'm glad you do that again. Okay, cool. And Clip National.

• 1:24:25Speaker 05

  Clip National? Let me see.

• 1:24:27Caleb Hammer?

Five dollars and twenty cents. C T L P National, enter. Ent. That's the one at the bottom.

• 1:24:34Speaker 05

  Is that the bottom?

• 1:24:37Caleb Hammer?

  Sapros Denny's. I think you

• 1:24:40Speaker 05

Not a hundred percent sure of that.

• 1:24:42Caleb Hammer?

And Venmo, that's eighty-eight dollars. Pull up your Amazon, let me see.

• 1:24:45Speaker 05

Might be a Venmo machine or something, I don't know.

• 1:24:48Caleb Hammer?

I assume she's going to the school and it's not gonna be free, correct?

• 1:24:51Speaker 05

It's, uh, we're gonna use our tax return to pay for it.

• 1:24:54Caleb Hammer?

Well, okay, you got some child tax credits. How much is coming in?

• 1:24:59Speaker 05

  We get four thousand for

• 1:25:01Caleb Hammer?

  How much is school?

• 1:25:02Speaker 05

  It's forty-two hundred.

• 1:25:04Caleb Hammer?

Okay. That's if you actually use it for that. You spend two thousand dollars more than you make on a monthly basis, at some point that'll catch up. I hope the tax return can go to that, but Fun fact, a lot of Exactly.

• 1:25:14Speaker 05

And then the rest of it, we're probably gonna charge on the credit card.

• 1:25:17Caleb Hammer?

  So how are you

• 1:25:19Speaker 05

So she can get through school and make more money.

• 1:25:21Caleb Hammer?

Credit card on a, or school on a credit card? Come on, even Sally Mae loans are half a credit card interest.

• 1:25:27Speaker 05

Should we look at maybe a small loan then for that, or?

• 1:25:32Speaker 05

  I don't know.

• 1:25:33Caleb Hammer?

What kind of school is it? Is it?

• 1:25:34Speaker 05

  It's a, it's the, it's a community college. I think it's a community college.

• 1:25:39Caleb Hammer?

Okay, she should, you should apply for federal loans. You mean, you have some Bennys, right? They can pass over, no?

• 1:25:45Speaker 05

  I used them.

• 1:25:46Caleb Hammer?

  Oh, you already did?

• 1:25:47Speaker 05

I used them for my, my job.

• 1:25:48Caleb Hammer?

Fair enough. Okay, yeah, some federal student loans.

• 1:25:51Speaker 05

  I'll talk to her.

• 1:25:52Caleb Hammer?

Well, it's better than a fucking credit card.

• 1:25:54Speaker 05

I agree. We just don't know how to finance it, that's why we're thinking about using the

• 1:25:57Caleb Hammer?

  Federal student loans.

• 1:25:58Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:25:58Caleb Hammer?

And if you don't get approved for that, even Sally Mae, which I hate, is better.

• 1:26:01Speaker 05

We don't know anything about student loans.

• 1:26:02Caleb Hammer?

What do you mean? Well, you're the guy that knows everything about personal finances, you're the expert, right?

• 1:26:06Speaker 05

I'm not, I never came to be an expert.

• 1:26:07Caleb Hammer?

You don't know that student loans exist?

• 1:26:08Speaker 05

Well, we don't know how to navigate them.

• 1:26:10Caleb Hammer?

  You've never looked it up?

• 1:26:11Speaker 05

I've never had to take out any student loans.

• 1:26:13Caleb Hammer?

Doesn't matter, we're talking about putting a school on a credit card. So usually that would imprompt me to look up something. I look up everything, I'm always looking it up. Why do people not look things up these days? Do people not care to be informed and check?

• 1:26:27Speaker 05

  Or

• 1:26:28Caleb Hammer?

  Oh, are they?

• 1:26:29Speaker 05

Or, or they're confused and they don't know.

• 1:26:30Caleb Hammer?

  Are they? They? They?

• 1:26:32Speaker 05

  A lot of people are.

• 1:26:33Caleb Hammer?

A lot of people? Who might these people be?

• 1:26:36Speaker 05

  I mean, I.

• 1:26:38Caleb Hammer?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:26:38Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:26:39Caleb Hammer?

  But. Okay, backpack, backpack.

• 1:26:40Speaker 05

  That's for our kids.

• 1:26:41Caleb Hammer?

Why you want to? I assumed as they were covered in flowers.

• 1:26:44Speaker 05

Yep. We are looking at moving back closer to our parents, so we can save on childcare, so.

• 1:26:50Caleb Hammer?

To have the parents watch, how far, wait, wait, put you own the home, right?

• 1:26:55Speaker 05

We, we do have a mortgage, but to have our parents watch the kids for free, that will significantly cut back on the childcare costs.

• 1:27:04Caleb Hammer?

Okay, let's talk about that in a second. Uh, Pokemon, what's going on there? Is that for the kids too?

• 1:27:08Speaker 05

That's for the kids to watch, yep.

• 1:27:11Speaker 05

  They watch.

• 1:27:11Caleb Hammer?

  You look like a Pokemanner.

• 1:27:13Speaker 05

  I watch a lot of.

• 1:27:15Caleb Hammer?

  For them?

• 1:27:15Speaker 05

I mean, I indulge in it. I have a nostalgia with it.

• 1:27:19Caleb Hammer?

I can always, I know that every time you say something and deflect it, either your friend does it or whatever. I know if I ask a little more, it comes back to you.

• 1:27:26Speaker 05

  I do like Pokemon. I.

• 1:27:27Caleb Hammer?

There it is. Why didn't you say that?

• 1:27:28Speaker 05

  Well.

• 1:27:30Caleb Hammer?

And warmers, lots of just, it's just lots of, I don't know. It's buying lots of things for the house and stuff, whether or not they're necessary. I don't know.

• 1:27:36Speaker 05

  They, I.

• 1:27:36Caleb Hammer?

Pull up your subscriptions as well?

• 1:27:39Speaker 05

Subscriptions. I don't have any. I mean, I do have the YouTube subscription, but I don't know how.

• 1:27:43Caleb Hammer?

  Premium?

• 1:27:44Speaker 05

No, it's a, so I subscribe to a guy on YouTube for Pokemon giveaway deals.

• 1:27:52Caleb Hammer?

  Is it a random giveaway?

• 1:27:54Speaker 05

It's not a random giveaway. It's to get like premium access to trades, kind of thing. Like if you want this Pokemon, you pay a little extra, you skip the line essentially. But I, I'm.

• 1:28:04Caleb Hammer?

  I guarantee you.

• 1:28:05Speaker 05

I'm gonna cancel it. I'm gonna cancel it because I haven't used it in a long time.

• 1:28:08Caleb Hammer?

  Good, you should.

• 1:28:09Speaker 05

  Okay, I will.

• 1:28:09Caleb Hammer?

And I won't even ask you to apply it, uh, apply it to ours, even though obviously ours mathematically, content wise, offers more than any other YouTube membership on the history of the platform. We've confirmed it. We've confirmed it with the source.

• 1:28:22Speaker 05

I haven't subscribed to yours because.

• 1:28:24Caleb Hammer?

You can when you're out of debt.

• 1:28:25Speaker 05

Yeah, let's do it when I'm out of debt.

• 1:28:27Caleb Hammer?

Well, there it is. There's your payment to that YouTuber. Chick-fil-A, McDonald's. Go in and get in some bolt and Venmo and Trina's hair.

• 1:28:35Speaker 05

That is our hairstylist. My wife will go to Trina to get her haircut. I will go to Great Clips because I don't care what my hair looks like.

• 1:28:42Caleb Hammer?

Oh, here's the mortgage, one hundred sixty one thousand five hundred thirty one dollars. Now, what is the house worth?

• 1:28:47Speaker 05

It, last time I got a home report on it.

• 1:28:50Caleb Hammer?

What do you mean, home report? What are you telling me?

• 1:28:51Speaker 05

I get emails every now and then, uh, from the mortgage company.

• 1:28:55Caleb Hammer?

  Okay.

• 1:28:56Speaker 05

  And.

• 1:28:56Caleb Hammer?

I checked multiple sources, talked to a realtor as well, but what did you see?

• 1:28:58Speaker 05

They're estimating it to be worth two oh three right now.

• 1:29:01Caleb Hammer?

Okay, cool. Minimum repayment, eight oh three. Okay, fifty three. Two oh three. Okay.

• 1:29:12Caleb Hammer?

  Okay.

• 1:29:15Caleb Hammer?

  And you're planning on moving?

• 1:29:16Speaker 05

We're planning on moving. We don't know when.

• 1:29:19Caleb Hammer?

We need to get rid of that car, get on a, okay, I will do the budget if you do this financially well. You know, she specifically said, even though she finds me to be an asshole, which I am, but I'm like a real way to, and that has actually benefited people, including the audience, including ten thousand dollars and ten months for the median guest. You can be that, she can be that. She specifically said, you need to listen to me and follow that guidance. Well, I'm saying to her, Toyota, time to go. So follow the same advice you gave, lady. So household income, we know four thousand nine hundred hits from you. What about with hers combined?

• 1:29:53Speaker 05

She, on a good month, will bring.

• 1:29:55Caleb Hammer?

  Normal month.

• 1:29:56Speaker 05

A norm, I'll just average, uh, will bring in about eleven hundred dollars a month.

• 1:30:01Caleb Hammer?

She doesn't work many hours, does she?

• 1:30:03Speaker 05

She, at max, will work twenty nine hours a week.

• 1:30:07Caleb Hammer?

  Okay.

• 1:30:07Speaker 05

  At thirteen dollars an hour.

• 1:30:10Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, that's pretty brutal. What's her, what's her, is the childcare even worth it then? Because you'd save more not paying for eighteen hundred dollars a month in childcare.

• 1:30:19Speaker 05

She needs a break from the kids.

• 1:30:21Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, but you're paying the premium. She's just going to work. Like, she could go to the mall for a couple hours a day, and that's even better. You're paying more in childcare than she makes.

• 1:30:29Speaker 05

And she wants to work. Plus, also.

• 1:30:30Caleb Hammer?

I guess she wants to work, but you know she's paying literally to work.

• 1:30:34Speaker 05

  She, I get that, yeah.

• 1:30:35Caleb Hammer?

  She's paying $700 a month to work.

• 1:30:37Speaker 05

  She wants to work.

• 1:30:38Caleb Hammer?

I get that, that is a want in this case.

• 1:30:39Speaker 05

She wants a break from the.

• 1:30:41Caleb Hammer?

I get that! And there are other breaks, but you-

• 1:30:44Speaker 00

Now, more than ever, we need someone on our side. But Rob Whitman? Whitman's votes drove up costs, cut Medicaid, and risked 350,000 Virginians' healthcare to pay for tax breaks for himself and his donors. He's not on our side. Shannon Taylor will fight corruption, cut taxes, and bring down costs. This November, vote for Shannon Taylor. She's for us. Paid for by HMP, the House Majority PAC dot com. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate's committee.

• 1:31:13Caleb Hammer?

Who are paying $700 to work at Chick-fil-A? She is paying $700 a month to work at Chick-fil-A. There are other things that is not a one-size-fits-all situation to take a break.

• 1:31:24Speaker 05

But then, if we do, if we do move, which is what we're planning. If we do, if we do move, then we save on that childcare. She could go to work and she can-

• 1:31:32Caleb Hammer?

Sure, I'm down, I'm down for that.

• 1:31:34Speaker 05

Then she could save for her retirement.

• 1:31:35Caleb Hammer?

Hey, I'm down for that! All I'm saying is, right now, she is paying $700 a month to fucking work for Chick-fil-A!

• 1:31:43Speaker 05

  She wants to work.

• 1:31:44Caleb Hammer?

For a want. A want does not matter when your retirement is-

• 1:31:48Speaker 05

Okay, when you have two kids, who drive you up the damn wall, who are-

• 1:31:51Caleb Hammer?

So it's one-size-fits-all. In order to get away from the kids, I have to spend $800 a month?

• 1:31:56Speaker 05

  She does, she wants to-

• 1:31:57Caleb Hammer?

  $700 a month?

• 1:31:57Speaker 05

She wants to work. And it helps-

• 1:31:59Caleb Hammer?

  I know, I know!

• 1:32:00Speaker 05

  It will help to-

• 1:32:02Caleb Hammer?

  It's not.

• 1:32:03Speaker 05

  It, it will.

• 1:32:04Caleb Hammer?

  Mathematically, it's not. It's not.

• 1:32:06Speaker 05

Show me where it doesn't make mathematical sense, but-

• 1:32:09Caleb Hammer?

Okay, she spent, you spent $1,800 a month on childcare, and she brings-

• 1:32:13Speaker 05

That's our budget, but we don't always hit that.

• 1:32:15Caleb Hammer?

And she brings in $1,100, so the math is 700.

• 1:32:18Speaker 05

But we don't always hit that.

• 1:32:19Caleb Hammer?

But sometimes you do, and that's what you put in. So guess what? Even if you don't, you're still under by a couple hundred bucks. So she's doing that as a want. She could have a hobby, she could do things. You could take the kids, go do things. There are other options.

• 1:32:29Speaker 05

I could take the kids when I'm gone 20 days out of the month.

• 1:32:32Caleb Hammer?

  I am just-

• 1:32:32Speaker 05

I could take the kids when I'm gone for 20 days out of the month.

• 1:32:35Caleb Hammer?

  I am just-

• 1:32:36Speaker 05

And I get 10 days at home, at best, and then I get a drill weekend.

• 1:32:40Caleb Hammer?

You're fighting on everything. I am bringing up a thousand different things, saying it is not- Black or white. It is not, she works at Chick-fil-A and you guys lose money or that she has no time away from the kids.

• 1:32:50Speaker 05

And then she can have that on her resume to show that-

• 1:32:52Caleb Hammer?

I'm gonna move on cuz you're being a-

• 1:32:53Speaker 05

That she could put on her resume that she's worked.

• 1:32:55Caleb Hammer?

  Shh, you little sh-

• 1:32:56Speaker 05

It was hard enough for her to get a job anyway.

• 1:32:57Caleb Hammer?

  Shh, shh, shh.

• 1:32:58Speaker 05

It was hard enough for her to get a job because she took two years off, almost two years off-

• 1:33:01Caleb Hammer?

Hey, hey, picture men's assholes right now and calm down. Your debt payments total, not including your mortgage. Well, this is what we're gonna do. We're gonna get rid of the car. You're gonna get a personal loan for eight thousand dollars. You're gonna get a ten thousand dollar car that you shop around for. And then the one you get, you're taking to multiple accounts to get a seal of approval. That is gonna be a good buy and not, you know, completely destroy your entire finances. So I'm actually gonna make that three hundred dollar minimum monthly payment. Five sixty-two point twenty-six for the Corolla. And then, of course, the Navy Federal Credit Card, also known as OF from friend, is two hundred fifty dollars and seventy-seven cents. So your new debt minimum monthly payments, when you do the right thing about the Toyota, cuz you will,

• 1:33:41Caleb Hammer?

will be one thousand seventy-eight dollars and three cents if she's not willing to. Then she's not on board for this and you guys need to see a marriage counselor immediately. Cuz that is the financially right thing to do. Mortgage. For now, I'm gonna say eight oh three fifty-three. I'm gonna assume that's gonna translate into rent if we have to move regardless. Rent might be a little higher. Utilities, how much on a monthly basis?

• 1:34:03Speaker 05

We budget at a hundred fifty, but we don't always hit it. Yeah, but we don't always hit it at that-

• 1:34:07Caleb Hammer?

I'll do a hundred fifty, what about internet?

• 1:34:08Speaker 05

Where it's bumped in with our HOA.

• 1:34:11Caleb Hammer?

  Okay, what's the HOA again?

• 1:34:12Speaker 05

One fifty-two after the online fee.

• 1:34:17Caleb Hammer?

Gas, room from drive, drive, both?

• 1:34:19Speaker 05

We have it in there for fif- four fifty, but with my-

• 1:34:23Caleb Hammer?

  Cool, car insurance?

• 1:34:24Speaker 05

No, Caleb, with the new job that I have, now that I'm driving over the road-

• 1:34:26Caleb Hammer?

  Yes, then tell me now!

• 1:34:27Speaker 05

Okay, probably two fifty for a gas.

• 1:34:29Caleb Hammer?

  Car insurance?

• 1:34:30Speaker 05

Car insurance is one seventy-six, or one seventy-three, something like that.

• 1:34:35Caleb Hammer?

One seventy-six. Necessary food for the house, you budgeted seven hundred, I think that is reasonable. TP fund, this is stuff for the kids, stuff for you guys, this is makeup, this is whatever you need-

• 1:34:43Speaker 05

We put that in with our groceries at seven hundred.

This is your experimental dildo that you're taking care of, two hundred dollars a month.

• 1:34:53Caleb Hammer?

For the TP fund, healthcare, uh, anything?

• 1:34:56Speaker 05

Two hundred and sixty dollars that Tricare takes out of my-

• 1:34:59Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, but that takes out of the check that comes in that we already calculated. I'm talking about exp- I'm talking about expenses, like going and getting prescriptions or appointments and things.

• 1:35:06Speaker 05

So, we spend probably about fifteen dollars on prescriptions each month for my blood pressure and-

• 1:35:13Caleb Hammer?

  Anything else?

• 1:35:15Speaker 05

Haircuts. Need them for the military.

• 1:35:18Caleb Hammer?

Haircuts, so that's not healthcare, okay.

• 1:35:20Speaker 05

  Well-

• 1:35:21Caleb Hammer?

That, that, that's in the TP fund.

• 1:35:22Speaker 05

Okay, it's in the TP fund.

• 1:35:23Caleb Hammer?

Yes, everything else is in the TP fund. Do you have any pets?

• 1:35:26Speaker 05

  I have a dog.

• 1:35:27Caleb Hammer?

  Uh, what age?

• 1:35:28Speaker 05

  She's nine.

• 1:35:29Caleb Hammer?

Uh, okay, not gonna have pet insurance. So, pet food, how much?

• 1:35:33Speaker 05

About twenty-five, thirty dollars a month.

• 1:35:34Caleb Hammer?

I'll do thirty. Subscriptions, I'm giving you, I'm gonna say forty should cover what you need, right? I'll give you fifty, how about that?

• 1:35:44Speaker 05

I could probably do forty, but fifty is-

• 1:35:46Caleb Hammer?

I'll give you fifty because I'm just, I'm just a generous guy. Also, I should just say, for the sake of this video, because everyone gets a little upset when you make fun of their community, Mormons. I am, I do not hate you. I don't hate anyone of any race, class, religion, I don't give a f- which is very easy to make fun of. And fun to make fun of.

• 1:36:10Speaker 05

  We are.

• 1:36:11Caleb Hammer?

But I do it from a place of love, because I don't actually give a f- about what you believe in. It impacts nothing in my life. Three thousand, three hundred and seventy-nine dollars and fifty-six cents is what you'll need to live on a monthly basis. You bring in six thousand dollars, this shouldn't even be a conversation.

• 1:36:24Speaker 05

  Really?

• 1:36:24Caleb Hammer?

Obviously, it would be a little higher with the Toyota full monthly payment, but not enough to make up the gap, you'd be like three thousand, six hundred.

• 1:36:32Speaker 05

  Put in our childcare, though?

• 1:36:33Caleb Hammer?

Oh, there we go, thank you.

• 1:36:34Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:36:35Caleb Hammer?

Okay, so what was, so we're doing eighteen?

• 1:36:36Speaker 05

We budget out eighteen. Sometimes it's more, sometimes it's less, but that's rounded.

• 1:36:41Caleb Hammer?

Okay, five thousand, one hundred and seventy-nine, that makes more sense. You would be tighter with that full car payment, but you still have wiggle room. Of the six thousand dollars that comes in on a monthly basis, yes, we're still taking into account her doing this stupid job math, which doesn't make sense. Because actually, you would have about a thousand dollars, no, you'd have like, you'd have like thirteen hundred dollars left over if she wasn't working and there was no childcare expenses, but whatever. Eight hundred, twenty dollars and forty-four cents. Okay, let's just eat up that twenty dollars and forty-four cents, which is miscellaneous, eight hundred dollars. That is what you guys have. Now, how much are you actually considering moving home?

• 1:37:18Speaker 05

How much are we considering moving?

• 1:37:19Caleb Hammer?

Like where are you on the scale of will you or won't you?

• 1:37:23Speaker 05

  To move?

• 1:37:24Caleb Hammer?

  Yes, to move.

• 1:37:25Speaker 05

To move to, I'd like to, just because.

• 1:37:29Caleb Hammer?

  And her?

• 1:37:29Speaker 05

  She'd like to too.

• 1:37:31Caleb Hammer?

  So you guys want to?

• 1:37:32Speaker 05

The problem is, is we don't know how to go about selling and or renting out our place. We would like to rent it out because keep that mortgage, keep that equity.

• 1:37:40Caleb Hammer?

I like that, but you guys have put yourself into a, well, okay, well, let's pretend you don't sell it.

• 1:37:45Speaker 05

But we are both heck bent on moving. But also, we are hesitant to move because we're afraid that if she gets a job, she doesn't want to move a whole lot either. So she doesn't want to move and then a year later move again.

• 1:37:57Caleb Hammer?

Yeah, why would you do that?

• 1:37:59Speaker 05

Yeah, why would you want to do that? But, I mean, we want to try to move closer to family.

• 1:38:03Caleb Hammer?

Well, with the childcare taken out, you'd have 2,620 left on a monthly basis.

• 1:38:08Speaker 05

But we, we do want to get a closer place to family. We do want to get a closer place.

• 1:38:11Caleb Hammer?

I'm gonna say, uh, rent will go up, it'll eat some, let's say.

• 1:38:14Speaker 05

  A lot, the housing market.

• 1:38:16Caleb Hammer?

Okay, let's say you have $2,000 left on a monthly basis. At that point, when you move, so your debt without the mortgage. I'm just trying to do a situation versus situation, whether or not we sell the house versus rent the house, okay? I'm gonna assume rent is gonna cover the mortgage, it'll probably be better, but let's just be conservative.

• 1:38:37Caleb Hammer?

So your bad debt is 60,000, well, actually, no, so we got rid of the, we got rid of the Toyota, so minus the 17,021.26. But then add in our new 8,000 dollar loan. Okay, so 51,403 dollars of bad debt, with the 2,000 dollars net you'd have at that point. It'll take 25 months to pay off, which isn't that bad. So that's a two-year process, right? Two-year process, let's call it another three quarters of a year to get an emergency fund. Let's just be conservative, round it up, three-year process. Cool, but if you sell the house and you move.

• 1:39:13Caleb Hammer?

Walk away with forty, call it thirty-five net, thirty-five you can pay off the Corolla, you'd only have the eight thousand dollars left on a monthly basis. Uh, and then plus the eight thousand eight hundred thirty-seven from the Navy Federal. And at that point with the two thousand dollars, you'd, it would be an eight-month payoff, fully funded emergency fund and everything in less than two years. I think with the interest that is accruing on these houses, I would almost be willing, unless you change your, actually no, because you need to change your behavior in the process. I would actually do the long-term process. The long-term process only because it forces you to change your behavior. If you sell your house and use that to wipe out most of the debt, you won't have actually changed your behavior and you might just mess that up again.

• 1:39:59Caleb Hammer?

Um, and I think long, like, short-term, if you're a hundred percent perfect, I might pull the equity out of the house because not everyone needs to be a landlord. And I would just pay off the debt and have a fully funded emergency fund and everything in like a year and a half. That'd be absolutely incredible.

• 1:40:11Speaker 05

  So you'd recommend selling?

• 1:40:12Caleb Hammer?

Do that. Maybe if you actually are able to fix the behavior. Seeing how you so far haven't, spending two thousand dollars more than comes in on a monthly basis. I would personally do the long-term process because you at least learned the life skills along the way. And that might save you, based on your life, more money over time, even if mathematically on the other end it might more, because the interest rates on everything is so high. So, that's up to you, but there are two paths forward. Three-year process, year and a half process.

• 1:40:39Speaker 05

Or cut it down the middle, do two. Or in the middle, but I'd want to get out of debt as quick as I can.

• 1:40:44Caleb Hammer?

That doesn't make any sense. I don't know what process gets us to two.

• 1:40:46Speaker 05

But I'd like to get out.

• 1:40:47Caleb Hammer?

Three-year by not selling the house, it's one and a half by selling the house.

• 1:40:51Speaker 05

I'd like it to be as short as possible so that way we can actually have a retirement.

• 1:40:53Caleb Hammer?

Sell the house and then I'll just be maxing out retirement. You don't need to be a landlord. Who cares?

• 1:40:57Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 1:40:58Caleb Hammer?

Nothing in collections. That's pretty brutal in terms of especially the car situation rolling that over in the Navy Federal spending on OnlyFans having that go up. Okay, it's not

• 1:41:42Caleb Hammer?

great. It's gonna be a one out of 10. Eh, two out of 10. Wahhh. Two out of 10. Emergency fund. Nothing. I didn't see anything in savings. There is a decent amount in the checking account. I'll call it one out of 10 retirement. At least you started, but it's nothing. Zero, one out of 10. Real estate. This is the little good part. Equity position. You're close to like that 20%. Okay. Yeah, it's halfway decent. Seven out of 10. Okay. Hammer Financial Score. Congratulations. And that house is leading the way. You are gonna be at a 2.5 out of 10. I hope you guys actually make this progress. This is gonna be an interesting post show. Very curious to see what he says. But until then, make sure you guys download the simpler budget app. Everything's

• 1:42:30Speaker 07

  Yeah, I'll call.

• 1:42:31Caleb Hammer?

There were hundreds of dollars of Only purchases on here. And he tells us it was his friend. He told his wife that it is his friend. Is that true? Tell the truth.

• 1:42:42Speaker 07

It's a little difficult to explain.

• 1:42:44Speaker 05

There is one big secret that I kept from you for the duration of the show.
