Today, we are surviving and thriving. And that's something my next guest knows all too well. Michelle Beto, someone who took all the things people told her to shrink, her body, her voice, her curves, and turned it into a superpower. Because who really gets to be the main character of your life? Who gets to define beauty or decide who's worthy of being seen? Michelle answered that for herself. She co-created the hit Netflix show Survival of the Thickest and made history as the first woman to film a comedy special at Radio City Music Hall. So today, we're getting into what it really means to own your story out loud. Because, baby, this is Keke Palmer. And, baby, this is Michelle Beto.

• 1:14Keke Palmer?

  Hey!

• 1:16Speaker 01

  Hi!

• 1:17Keke Palmer?

  Hey!

• 1:17Speaker 01

  Can I talk to you?

• 1:18Keke Palmer?

Yes! I had you literally back for forever.

• 1:24Speaker 01

  What's going on?

• 1:24Keke Palmer?

  How are you?

• 1:25Speaker 01

  I'm good.

• 1:26Keke Palmer?

You remember when I ran up on you at the airport?

• 1:28Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:29Keke Palmer?

  Yes, girl, with your kiddos.

• 1:30Speaker 01

  And you had your kiddos.

• 1:31Keke Palmer?

  I'm like, I love you!

• 1:33Speaker 01

  It was real good.

• 1:34Keke Palmer?

  Yes, girl.

• 1:34Speaker 01

We were like flying first class, trying to do the most with the chocolate chip cookies.

• 1:37Keke Palmer?

  And y'all looked good.

• 1:39Speaker 01

  Thank you. It's a lot. It's a lot. But it's good.

• 1:43Keke Palmer?

  Especially with the kiddos.

• 1:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:44Keke Palmer?

Now, wait a minute, do you live on the East Coast?

• 1:46Speaker 01

  I live very east.

• 1:47Keke Palmer?

That's lovely. You here, in New York?

• 1:48Speaker 01

Very New York. Look at this outfit!

• 1:51Keke Palmer?

It's like fake jean. It's like...

• 1:52Speaker 01

  It's cute!

• 1:53Keke Palmer?

  Lean.

• 1:54Speaker 01

  Look at you!

• 1:55Keke Palmer?

  Girl, look at you!

• 1:55Speaker 01

  No, look at you, bitch!

• 1:57Keke Palmer?

  These shoes?

• 1:58Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 1:58Keke Palmer?

  Are these potato?

• 1:59Speaker 01

  I have no business...

• 2:00Keke Palmer?

Girl, me too. I hope y'all don't see a little bit of the ash. I could've been a little bit more moisturized today.

• 2:04Speaker 01

I could've been. I could've gotten like a spray tan. I love seeing you, though. Usually, it's always like a work event.

• 2:09Keke Palmer?

  I know.

• 2:09Speaker 01

And you're so good at them.

• 2:11Keke Palmer?

  Oh, my gosh, you too!

• 2:11Speaker 01

No, you're really good. You come in, you do the thing, and then you kind of like just peace out without telling anyone else. Like, she was just here.

• 2:18Keke Palmer?

  Always with the Irish accent.

• 2:19Speaker 01

  I love it.

• 2:20Keke Palmer?

Because I hate awkward... I'm awkward in general. So it's like with goodbyes, I'm like...

• 2:24Speaker 01

  Yeah, goodbyes are too much.

• 2:25Keke Palmer?

  It feels weird.

• 2:26Speaker 01

A hello and a goodbye, that's too much.

• 2:28Keke Palmer?

It's too much for one evening.

• 2:29Speaker 01

Everyone calm down. I'm so sorry, you've got things to read, look at you.

• 2:32Keke Palmer?

Bro, you got your, you did your pre-show pull-up and you're probably one of the only people that, I mean, some people know their big three, but like, I'm impressed that you know your big three. Like, you're into astrology.

• 2:41Speaker 01

I am, because I love, I didn't even know what angel numbers were, but I knew that I was born on 7/24, at 7/24, and my kids are January 19th, 2019. So I'm like, angel numbers always come up, so I'm like, what does this mean?

• 2:55Keke Palmer?

  That's so crazy.

• 2:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:57Keke Palmer?

Oh my gosh, I'm into angel numbers too. My mom loves 26. I was born August 26, my dad's March 26. And she was like, last year, she was like, 2026 is gonna be special.

• 3:06Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 3:06Keke Palmer?

  She's into that too.

• 3:07Speaker 01

  I wonder what that means.

• 3:08Keke Palmer?

  I know.

• 3:09Speaker 01

It's like an eight, what does that mean?

• 3:10Keke Palmer?

  What does it mean?

• 3:11Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 3:12Keke Palmer?

So you are a Leo, rising?

• 3:14Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 3:15Keke Palmer?

  A Scorpio?

• 3:16Speaker 01

  Moon.

• 3:16Keke Palmer?

  Moon, and then a Leo's?

• 3:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:19Keke Palmer?

Girl, you got a lot, do you feel that Leo energy coming through?

• 3:21Speaker 01

  100%.

• 3:21Keke Palmer?

  The hair is giving Maine.

• 3:22Speaker 01

Well, no, the hair is giving Amazon package, but, but! Ma'am, ma'am, it's giving next-day delivery is what it's giving.

• 3:31Keke Palmer?

  It'll never mess up.

• 3:33Speaker 01

Look, I know, um, a fabric softener I learned in Follocks really does the trick. But anyways, not mousse, fabric softener, a little bit of water. But, um, yeah, I feel very Leo. I feel like, you know, since I was little, I wanted like, community, I wanted clubs, I wanted hugs.

• 3:48Keke Palmer?

  Fierce.

• 3:49Speaker 01

  You know, fierce, yes.

• 3:51Keke Palmer?

I will say the Scorpio makes sense to me because when I see, anytime I see you, I feel that sexy energy. It's something that you just emit, I don't, like, I just feel it. You're always like, yes.

• 4:02Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 4:03Keke Palmer?

  It's always, she's always here.

• 4:04Speaker 01

  I mean...

• 4:05Keke Palmer?

  I live for that.

• 4:07Speaker 01

I love when people own their sexuality, there's nothing better, because it's also like, I feel like we're always under the gaze of like, some terrible patriarchal standard of, oh, like, we have to be sexy but not too sexy.

• 4:18Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 4:18Speaker 01

You know, we have to be smart but not too smart. And so it's just nice when you're just like, I like what it does.

• 4:24Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 4:24Speaker 01

You know what I mean? It isn't like, thank you, it also isn't, you're welcome. It's like, I'll call you. And so, I love it, I love it. I know, I know, it's great.

• 4:32Keke Palmer?

  I'm obsessed with it.

• 4:33Speaker 01

  Thank you so much.

• 4:34Keke Palmer?

Your love language is service and touch. Fabulous.

• 4:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:38Keke Palmer?

So what do you guys look like?

• 4:39Speaker 01

Or you can like, touch and service me at the same time.

• 4:41Keke Palmer?

  Uh, what?

• 4:43Speaker 01

What? I mean, is the hand in hand?

• 4:46Keke Palmer?

This sounds excellent, by the way. I'm right there with y'all.

• 4:48Speaker 01

Thank you so much. No, I mean, like, um, I, I never really cared about how much money somebody had in their account.

• 4:55Keke Palmer?

  Period.

• 4:55Speaker 01

As long as they were thoughtful and ambitious. You could always make money, but can you, you can't teach somebody to be thoughtful. Like, can you help me and take care of me?

• 5:03Keke Palmer?

  That's without a doubt.

• 5:04Speaker 01

  You know what I mean?

• 5:05Keke Palmer?

It's true. I feel like it, it goes unnoticed too much.

• 5:08Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 5:09Keke Palmer?

You know what I mean? Because character is something that, it's like, once they grow, they're grown. I mean, people can change. I'm not saying they can't, but it's like, it's a tall task, a tall order.

• 5:16Speaker 01

  You are who you are.

• 5:17Keke Palmer?

You know, you are who you are. But like, absolutely, money and success, those things, especially if you have good character.

• 5:22Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 5:22Keke Palmer?

Even if you lose it, you can make it come back.

• 5:24Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 5:25Keke Palmer?

  You know what I mean?

• 5:25Speaker 01

Are we talking about Jerry Springer? Just kidding. Oh, no. Because I feel like he lost money and he came back, but it just, rest in power. What a weird...

• 5:32Keke Palmer?

What about MC Hammer? Did he come back from it? The lossage of the money?

• 5:37Speaker 01

  Did he?

• 5:38Keke Palmer?

  I hope he did.

• 5:38Speaker 01

  Wait, he's alive, right?

• 5:39Keke Palmer?

  He's alive, he's living.

• 5:40Speaker 01

  Okay, it's just...

• 5:41Keke Palmer?

He's living, so he's a [BLEEP]. He living.

• 5:42Speaker 01

  Good.

• 5:43Keke Palmer?

  That accounts for something.

• 5:44Speaker 01

Bobby Brown came back. He's on the stage, jumping.

• 5:46Keke Palmer?

  Yes, Bobby!

• 5:46Speaker 01

  Yes!

• 5:47Keke Palmer?

Is my, is my... My, my, my, my, my, my, my. Wow, no addition.

• 5:53Speaker 01

I know. I know. Is it still new? Is it, can we still use the word new? Just saying.

• 5:59Keke Palmer?

What's a question you wish you were asked more in interviews? Um, I don't know. Yeah, this is a hard one.

• 6:04Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 6:05Keke Palmer?

Yeah. Is there any topic that you're like, why don't we ever touch that topic now?

• 6:09Speaker 01

No, I mean, I feel like social justice is one of those things that definitely comes up and people are afraid to say something because of like ruining relationships or money in their pocket or whatever it is, but I just feel like, you know, I just wish more comedians especially would punch up, not down.

• 6:25Keke Palmer?

  Sure.

• 6:25Speaker 01

But I don't know, like, how that would be a question. One of the questions I do not like getting, which I don't know if this is one of your questions, is like, what you would tell your youngest self?

• 6:35Keke Palmer?

  I'm kidding.

• 6:35Speaker 01

  No!

• 6:36Keke Palmer?

I just wanted to do that because you set it up so perfectly. You set it up so perfectly for me to do.

• 6:42Speaker 01

This is why I love you so much.

• 6:43Keke Palmer?

But that is a really hard one, though.

• 6:44Speaker 01

  It is.

• 6:44Keke Palmer?

I hate when I'm asked that too, sorry.

• 6:46Speaker 01

You know what I mean? But, eh, eh, not sorry. Look at, look at all these cameras. This is nice. You got more than one Wayfair rug. This is, you...

• 6:54Keke Palmer?

It's definitely Wayfair. I'm so glad you noticed.

• 6:57Speaker 01

Yeah, you got what I need. This is nice. You got speed bumps? Like, what? This is a real...

• 7:02Keke Palmer?

  Come on, yellow jackets.

• 7:03Speaker 01

  You know what I mean?

• 7:04Keke Palmer?

My dad used to make those. Not those particularly, but yeah, my dad was always making plastic, selling plastic.

• 7:10Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 7:10Keke Palmer?

  We've come a long way.

• 7:11Speaker 01

That's so great. So you're like Tommy Boy?

• 7:13Keke Palmer?

  No, who's Tommy Boy?

• 7:14Speaker 01

Oh, my God, that movie Tommy Boy?

• 7:16Keke Palmer?

The daddy worked in a factory?

• 7:18Speaker 01

Well, he owned the factory with Chris. What's his name? What's the big dude's name from SNL that passed away? Thank you so much.

• 7:24Keke Palmer?

Oh, my God, Chris Farley. Rest in peace.

• 7:26Speaker 01

Rest in power. You remember that movie?

• 7:27Keke Palmer?

Rest in power. I don't remember that movie, Tommy Boy.

• 7:30Speaker 01

  Oh, it's good.

• 7:30Keke Palmer?

Yeah, but I do remember Chris Farley. I remember his movies and stuff like that.

• 7:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:34Keke Palmer?

  Growing up.

• 7:35Speaker 01

It was Da- it was with David Spade and they were like...

• 7:37Keke Palmer?

Oh, I love David Spade. What was, um, didn't David Spade also do Mom Named You, Joe Dirt, Not Yelling At? Joe Dirt? Isn't that Joe Dirt?

• 7:44Speaker 01

  That is Joe Dirt.

• 7:45Keke Palmer?

I love Joe Dirt. It was so crazy, that movie.

• 7:48Speaker 01

  I love you so much.

• 7:48Keke Palmer?

They did that boy so bad.

• 7:49Speaker 01

I love you so much, yeah. I love a good spicy white movie.

• 7:52Keke Palmer?

You know? Hot chick, anyway. Um, who is someone that you met that made you feel starstruck? You said Lenny Francine. First of all, his middle name is Francine?

• 8:00Speaker 01

  No, it's [BLEEP].

• 8:01Keke Palmer?

Oh, Lenny [BLEEP]. Lenny [BLEEP] Cravitz.

• 8:04Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 8:05Keke Palmer?

I live for the fact that Lenny Cravitz's parents was on George Jefferson.

• 8:09Speaker 01

  I know.

• 8:09Keke Palmer?

  That gags me.

• 8:10Speaker 01

  Isn't that crazy?

• 8:11Keke Palmer?

That's the coolest, like, little random-ass fact.

• 8:14Speaker 01

  Isn't that so crazy?

• 8:15Keke Palmer?

Like, what? I love Lenny Cravitz. So he's your, he's your guy. He's your one.

• 8:19Speaker 01

He's the one. He's the one. He, because I met him. Now, I sat next to Beyonce at, like, um, an event, but there was no way I could, you know, I can't go, I don't go up to...

• 8:30Keke Palmer?

  You didn't say nothing?

• 8:31Speaker 01

  No.

• 8:32Keke Palmer?

To be? I feel like B would live for you to...

• 8:34Speaker 01

She probably would, but like, I was, there was too many people asking her things and I was like, I don't want to bother you, miss.

• 8:39Keke Palmer?

Oh, my gosh, yeah. I feel very much I don't want to bother you, to everybody. I do as well. I'll say hey, but then I'll be like, let me get out your way.

• 8:46Speaker 01

  What do you mean?

• 8:47Keke Palmer?

  Because it gets so awkward.

• 8:48Speaker 01

  It gets awkward.

• 8:49Keke Palmer?

  That's the thing.

• 8:50Speaker 01

  Do you have social anxiety?

• 8:51Keke Palmer?

Girl, yes, so I'm always like, oh! Cause that like helps me stabilize, that's me regulating.

• 8:56Speaker 01

Right, oh, I love you so much.

• 8:58Keke Palmer?

You know, it just kind of, cause if I do that-

• 9:00Speaker 01

That's why you grab the mic and start singing? Yes, that's grounding, yeah, I get it, one hundred, what's your sign?

• 9:06Keke Palmer?

So, thought you'd never ask, I'm a Virgo sun.

• 9:10Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 9:11Keke Palmer?

  Cancer rising.

• 9:12Speaker 01

  Okay, earth.

• 9:13Keke Palmer?

  Sagittarius moon.

• 9:14Speaker 01

What do you mean, not the sag badge?

• 9:17Keke Palmer?

  That's a sag babe.

• 9:17Speaker 01

That is the fire, that's the fire.

• 9:20Keke Palmer?

  She's coming through?

• 9:21Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 9:21Keke Palmer?

  You know, she's trying to?

• 9:22Speaker 01

Yeah, that's great, that's great, yeah, my husband's a Virgo and my kids are Capricorn.

• 9:28Keke Palmer?

Oh my gosh, that's our perfect match. And by the way, the Leo is the head of the Virgo.

• 9:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:35Keke Palmer?

Like, the Virgo lives for the Leo at all.

• 9:37Speaker 01

Yeah, yes, yeah, I mean, I always made-

• 9:40Keke Palmer?

  Your husband's from the Netherlands.

• 9:41Speaker 01

  He is!

• 9:41Keke Palmer?

  I dated a Dutchman once.

• 9:43Speaker 01

  Are you okay?

• 9:44Keke Palmer?

I enjoyed him, and I enjoyed living in Holland, I lived there with his beautiful mother, shoutouts to her, me and her are still friends on Facebook.

• 9:51Speaker 01

  Oh, not the Facebook friends.

• 9:52Keke Palmer?

I could see myself being a Dutch wife, like, I was into it momentarily.

• 9:58Speaker 01

  Wow!

• 9:59Keke Palmer?

  It was a COVID thing.

• 10:00Speaker 01

Oh, I didn't know, we could've, we could've been Dutch wives together. We could've, we could've done this, we could've been going Dutch.

• 10:07Keke Palmer?

Is your husband very, very Dutch? Like, is he riding the bike?

• 10:10Speaker 01

Oh ma'am, he's riding a bike, he's fixing the bike, he was born on a bike out of his mama's, like, it's, yes, he's very Dutch.

• 10:17Keke Palmer?

Oh my gosh! There's this restaurant in Amsterdam that I love called Von Spits.

• 10:22Speaker 01

  Oh, okay.

• 10:23Keke Palmer?

Back when I ate chicken, it was very good chicken, I know that's not what you're expecting when you're thinking about the Netherlands, but by the way, it was great.

• 10:29Speaker 01

Oh, interest, you are messing me up right now.

• 10:32Keke Palmer?

Do you guys visit there often?

• 10:34Speaker 01

We do, cause we were long distance for two years, New York to Amsterdam, it's supposed to be one night stand. It was, that's why I tell people-

• 10:40Keke Palmer?

Tell me the story, let's go.

• 10:41Speaker 01

  Wow, I mean-

• 10:42Keke Palmer?

  One night stand, right?

• 10:43Speaker 01

Yeah, you gotta open your mind, your heart, and your legs to love, okay? Because it can happen, but be safe, you're too cute for bacteria.

• 10:50Keke Palmer?

Oh my gosh, that's true. Do you just say my UCLA, my UCLA health chart, boom?

• 10:54Speaker 01

Well, I don't go to Kaiser. We have, we have something different on the east coast. But yeah, I mean, also Planned Parenthood, support them because they were supporting my holes when I had no insurance. But the point is, I didn't love going to Amsterdam. I, I just have been on too many bikes though, like my taints are speed bump.

• 11:11Keke Palmer?

I loved it as well. I did as well. Wow. So one night stand, you guys had a fabulous vibe and then you just kept texting, calling, hanging out.

• 11:18Speaker 01

Well, he was getting in touch with me. He was like really trying to hold it down and I was like, I'm busy. I don't even know how to say your name. I don't even know where Holland is. Is it Germany light? Don't say that to a Dutch person. They don't like that.

• 11:28Keke Palmer?

Yo, they hate that. It's a thing.

• 11:30Speaker 01

  They're like, is it Denmark? I'm like, I, I, you know, I, I don't, I, I just learned timeshares were fake. I don't know what's happening.

• 11:37Keke Palmer?

Oh my gosh, yeah, I did hear about timeshares.

• 11:39Speaker 01

  You know what I mean?

• 11:40Keke Palmer?

  They lied to us.

• 11:41Speaker 01

They really did. What is a timeshare?

• 11:43Keke Palmer?

It's like some scam. It's like a pyramid scheme.

• 11:46Speaker 01

  It is.

• 11:47Keke Palmer?

  Kind of is.

• 11:47Speaker 01

Have you ever been in a pyramid scheme?

• 11:49Keke Palmer?

No, at least I don't think. That would be a doozy. I find out today.

• 11:53Speaker 01

I know. Oh my God. That'd be terrible.

• 11:57Keke Palmer?

The concept of a pyramid scheme should be right, but it just goes bad.

• 12:01Speaker 01

That's how you get somebody in a pyramid scheme.

• 12:03Keke Palmer?

Right. Because it's like, it feels like it should be cyclical.

• 12:05Speaker 01

I truly believe anything you tell me because I feel like you have, you are of right mind. And when you're wrong, you say you're wrong. What am I, Jerry Orban?

• 12:13Keke Palmer?

  Oh my gosh.

• 12:14Speaker 01

Anyways, all my references are older than Taylor Swift, but I do love, and I call my virgin the Holland Tunnel at this point.

• 12:21Keke Palmer?

Okay, period, because that's, that's all we got time for.

• 12:24Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 12:25Keke Palmer?

We only got time for the Dutchmen.

• 12:26Speaker 01

That's right. And gas is cheaper on the other side.

• 12:28Keke Palmer?

They're very nice, you know, I was gonna, what, what's something I can say in Dutch?

• 12:32Speaker 01

  Um, prost?

• 12:34Keke Palmer?

  Prost.

• 12:34Speaker 01

Yeah, prostketchup. What is prost love?

• 12:36Keke Palmer?

  Okay, so.

• 12:39Speaker 01

  Oh yum.

• 12:40Keke Palmer?

Let's go back to the beginning. You are from Hamilton Township, New Jersey.

• 12:44Speaker 01

  Oh yuck.

• 12:45Keke Palmer?

  Your, your mom is Jamaican?

• 12:47Speaker 01

  She is Jamaican.

• 12:47Keke Palmer?

  Your daddy is Haitian.

• 12:48Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 12:49Keke Palmer?

So, I mean, what was it like for you growing up? Were you always really funny? Are your parents funny? What was your childhood like?

• 12:55Speaker 01

Oh my God, really? Oh my God, really?

• 12:59Keke Palmer?

Yes, and I feel like this Caribbean vibe, it makes total sense to me.

• 13:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:03Keke Palmer?

Yeah, like this, you totally give that. I also think Caribbean type girls, they always have a little bit of this je ne sais quoi as well.

• 13:09Speaker 01

Yeah, I call it a je ne sais queef, but yes, that's right.

• 13:15Speaker 01

You know, the thing about growing up bliskended Caribbean in, in central Jersey, which is like the Midwest with the northeast attitude. You know, it's just a lot of people angry eating pink meats and a big hoagie bread with white sneakers yelling, gout, everybody named Tony, calm down.

• 13:32Keke Palmer?

  Come on, wah wah.

• 13:33Speaker 01

I didn't even know I was too cute for a neighborhood until I was like 10 and I learned how to code switch at six. I was like, this is exhausting. And even like my uniforms, so much higher in the back, they had a high booty. I call it top shelf liquor now.

• 13:45Keke Palmer?

  Okay.

• 13:46Speaker 01

So like even though like I was around women in New York, you know, like Brooklyn, Queens, or even going down to Jamaica, or even up to Miami, whatever, um, with the Caribbean women in my family, they just love their bodies. And so I didn't understand why I was always shamed, you know? Um, and then my mom sort of tried to teach me how to walk in this world.

• 14:07Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 14:08Speaker 01

And she's tiny. And so she'd always be like, um, cause I've had this body since I was 12, but she'd be like,

• 14:12Keke Palmer?

  Wow.

• 14:13Speaker 01

You know, um, don't stick your chest out. I'm like, I'm standing up straight like you told me to. And so then figuring out how to live under this male gaze yet again, I was like, this is exhausting and I'm bored. And so, you know,

• 14:25Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 14:26Speaker 01

By the time I could like come home from school, let my, literally let my hair down and my freak flag fly. I was like, this is it. But like, I didn't know that. I just thought you're, that's you in public and this is you at home. And so I slowly but surely came into my own, like through friends, um, through my people, you know? Um, I went to college in Miami cause I was like, I gotta get out of Jersey. And

• 14:49Keke Palmer?

  Miami sounds fun.

• 14:50Speaker 01

It was so fun, especially for college, because there were so many people from different countries just living their truth and it's too hot to be anything else than what your body's supposed to be.

• 14:59Keke Palmer?

  Okay.

• 15:00Speaker 01

  You know?

• 15:01Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 15:02Speaker 01

And so I'm like, yeah, I'm, I just, I figured out how to be a truth teller through my body first. And then I came to my voice when I started working in the workplace.

• 15:12Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 15:13Speaker 01

Cause I had to ask for things and advocate for myself. Cause I realized no one was gonna do it for me.

• 15:16Keke Palmer?

Yeah. Two things spoke, uh, jumped out to me too, when you were talking, where it's one, where you're being criticized for your body for being too thick, or whatever people can say about it in that regard. But then also this idea that I think a lot of Women experience is the sexualization.

• 15:30Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 15:30Keke Palmer?

  Early on.

• 15:31Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 15:31Keke Palmer?

You're fetishized at the same time.

• 15:32Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 15:32Keke Palmer?

It's like on one hand, I'm too big, but on the other end.

• 15:35Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 15:36Keke Palmer?

This person is lusting after me and now I gotta stick my chest back.

• 15:38Speaker 01

It's gross. You're either a fetish or a fear and that's why the states that have the most egregious trans laws also have the highest use- usage of trans porn. It's really gross. What you need to do is just give people their rights and, and just let them live in the bodies that they want to live in. You know what I mean?

• 15:53Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, that's really important.

• 15:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 15:55Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 15:55Speaker 01

  It's crazy.

• 15:55Keke Palmer?

Cause it's exploi- you're exploiting it at that point in time.

• 15:57Speaker 01

Yes. Also, wait a minute, do you remember when you came to Big Morning Buzz Live?

• 16:01Keke Palmer?

  Oh, yes.

• 16:02Speaker 01

  Over 10 years ago, I was Nick's co-host.

• 16:04Keke Palmer?

  Oh, my gosh.

• 16:06Speaker 01

And you were there and I think you were there with your mom, I don't remember. But I, I remember that one of your earrings broke. And I was like, I got earrings. And then like we pulled out like a whole thing of earrings and I don't know, you just went through the earrings. It was very sweet.

• 16:20Keke Palmer?

  And I took them.

• 16:21Speaker 01

  Good.

• 16:22Keke Palmer?

  Did I take?

• 16:22Speaker 01

  I don't know, they weren't mine.

• 16:24Keke Palmer?

  Oh, they wasn't yours?

• 16:25Speaker 01

I mean, they were like mine for the show.

• 16:26Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 16:27Speaker 01

  But I don't know.

• 16:28Keke Palmer?

That's so crazy, we had that random thing that I didn't even remember to you just brought it up right now.

• 16:32Speaker 01

Is it? But you've done a lot of stuff.

• 16:34Keke Palmer?

I just love that we had more connections than I knew.

• 16:36Speaker 01

Yeah, weren't you like the youngest talk show host on BET?

• 16:40Keke Palmer?

  I was.

• 16:40Speaker 01

  That's insane.

• 16:41Keke Palmer?

It was crazy, it was a crazy time.

• 16:42Speaker 01

And you were like, but that's gotta be lawless in a sense.

• 16:47Keke Palmer?

Yeah, and I think it still is. Like, I feel like I'm, I feel so much inside of the meta-awareness that is, oh, my generation is arriving to, which I think possibly is just because of what's happened with pop culture and social media and reality TV.

• 17:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:04Keke Palmer?

But I've always been trying to like process it out loud and I think that was like the beginning of it. Um, and then like I love having my podcast, cause I get to, I'm still having that same conversation.

• 17:13Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 17:14Keke Palmer?

Where it's like, so what does it mean, y'all?

• 17:15Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 17:16Keke Palmer?

Are we experiencing life? Are we in the experience? Are we watching it? How much of us watching it is actually playing into us experiencing it? It's just so recursive, the whole thing.

• 17:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:25Keke Palmer?

  You know?

• 17:25Speaker 01

  What's that word?

• 17:26Keke Palmer?

  Recursive?

• 17:27Speaker 01

Come on, Akilah, I don't know how to spell that.

• 17:30Keke Palmer?

It was in a sentence, she just did. What? I'm from Jersey, okay? The Keela callback has me guys. It has me guys. I love it, I love it. You shared a moment where you were told by a college professor Yeah. that you weren't the right size for camera. Yeah. What was that experience like? And how did you get past? Because when we're in our formative years, it's pretty, everything anybody say to us is like the law. Because we don't know that we have like a choice outside of that. I know. You don't trust these people. So a professor saying that to you, you're in Miami, and they say that to you, and you somehow still find your way to be who you are today. What was that path?

• 18:15Keke Palmer?

Okay, so the road trip is happening, all right? The snacks are packed. Somebody already has the playlist ready. And you already know the music is about to be popping, okay? And the kids have been asking, are we there yet? Since before we left the driveway. As someone who travels by car frequently with her child, I know what will make or break that trip is what you pull up to at the end of it. Because after me and Leo have been in that car for six hours, baby, we are not trying to arrive at just anything. We want to walk into a home. And that's exactly why I like booking stays on Airbnb. When you get to a place that actually feels like somewhere you can live, the whole energy shifts. Now we have a space to spread out. A kitchen where I can throw something together if I want to.

• 18:58Keke Palmer?

A porch where I can sit, breathe, and come back to myself after that drive. That's the reset you need. The trip doesn't end when you arrive. It's just getting started. And when you book with Airbnb, that's when the trip really begins.

• 19:14Keke Palmer?

I need everybody to hear me clearly. You do not need a milestone to enjoy yourself. I said what I said. Society has us out here waiting for promotions, engagements, and New Year's Eve to twist open something nice. Meanwhile, I'm over here with a chilled glass of Stella Rosa Black because I remembered to water my plants three days in a row. That's growth, literally. And the flavor, sweet, smooth, rich, bold, deep berry, blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, all sitting together like a Real Housewives reunion, where everybody kept their glass in their hand. This is wine for everyone 21 and up who understands that sometimes a celebration

• 19:55Keke Palmer?

is the random Wednesday, or the quiet night in, or the I finished my laundry and put it all away in one day victory lap. You are the occasion, so please act accordingly. Head to StellaRosa.com to find your favorite flavor. Your next occasion, which is literally whenever you decide, is already taken care of because, baby, this is Stella Rosa. And please, please, please, drink responsibly.

• 20:25Speaker 01

I don't know. That's such a tough question because, um, you know, we were going around the class saying, like, what we want to do with our degree. And I remember saying, like, I want to be like an entertainment journalist. I want to be like a John Hart, or like a John Tesh or Mary Hart. You know what I mean? I want to wear like a red lip and shoulder pads and just like

• 20:45Keke Palmer?

  Oh, fabulous.

• 20:46Speaker 01

give you the entertainment news. But, um, he told me I was too fat to be on camera and it was so

• 20:52Keke Palmer?

  Literally.

• 20:52Speaker 01

Yeah, and it was very like matter of fact. So, and I didn't question him. I was, I was a little embarrassed, but this is the 90s and, you know, there was no iPhones, there was no cameras, there was no, again, it was pretty lawless. Like, we've come a long way.

• 21:08Keke Palmer?

  Yes, we have.

• 21:10Speaker 01

You know, we still have a lot of work to do, but I, but the thing is, is like, he was kind of true because I never saw myself. Like, there was Oprah and that was it.

• 21:19Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 21:20Speaker 01

There was Ricky Lake and that was it.

• 21:22Keke Palmer?

  Mm-hmm.

• 21:23Speaker 01

And that was it. And so I didn't see myself, and that's why I always say representation is so important because if you don't see yourself, how do you ever know that you could be it? And then also, how do you learn about anybody else unless you're just seeing the same type of people all the time, the same type of bodies? But the thing is, is that he's not the first person that was gonna say that to me.

• 21:44Keke Palmer?

  Right.

• 21:45Speaker 01

  So many people have said

• 21:48Speaker 01

Just way more egregious things. And so he kind of prepared me for what I was getting into.

• 21:54Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 21:54Speaker 01

And I didn't know. But that was the first time I heard it. I've already heard stuff from my family. But it was more like, uh, if you don't lose weight, like, you can't find a good man, no one's gonna love you.

• 22:06Keke Palmer?

  This is your family.

• 22:07Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 22:08Keke Palmer?

That's so annoying. I'm sorry about that.

• 22:10Speaker 01

  Yeah, but it's okay.

• 22:12Keke Palmer?

That really pisses me off, sorry.

• 22:13Speaker 01

Yeah, it sucks because I would never tell that to a child. But like, but what it did was inform me on how to, um, like, love myself, fully.

• 22:28Keke Palmer?

And also it's just so untrue. You know, my mom has shared those kinds of things with me with her growing up. And you can't do this, or you can't be that. She the only person still married, damn it. You know, in her fist, you know what I'm saying? She the only, like, all the things that the people try to tell you that you can and can't be based off of your weight. If you want to change your weight, that's one thing. If you want to be whatever you want to be. If you want to be it, that's one thing.

• 22:48Speaker 01

  That's one thing.

• 22:49Keke Palmer?

But this idea that everybody that it does not fit in the same box is somehow not dignified.

• 22:56Speaker 01

  Yeah, or worthy of love.

• 22:57Keke Palmer?

Or worthy of love, or love thyself.

• 22:59Speaker 01

  It's crazy.

• 23:00Keke Palmer?

  It doesn't make sense.

• 23:02Speaker 01

It doesn't make sense, and it says more about them than me.

• 23:04Keke Palmer?

  It pisses me off.

• 23:05Speaker 01

It pissed me off. I was angry for a while. And comedy really saved me because I was able to talk about it, make a funny yell. And, uh, eventually go to therapy. But I'm thankful for those experiences because I, when people say we fight for joy, like, I fight for it. Within myself, for everybody else. And now I know how to love my children and how to raise them. Do you know what I mean? Because I'm like, it ain't about even me. It's you. This is your body. The most important relationship you will ever have is one you have with yourself. So I am actually thankful for those. You know, for those experiences because they really have taught me how to just

• 23:47Speaker 01

live in an unbridled sort of joyful way where nobody can touch it.

• 23:53Keke Palmer?

  Yes, yes, yes, yes.

• 23:55Speaker 01

  You know?

• 23:56Keke Palmer?

It's, it's crazy because I've talked about different things in my life where it's like, it all becomes okay when you realize it's something that can become cyclical. If it's just, if you just get to a mountaintop of something and there's nothing to share it with, it can make that all feel like, damn, what was it about? But the moment that you realize, oh, this is, this happened to me so that I can share it.

• 24:15Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 24:15Keke Palmer?

I went through this so that I could then tell my so and so.

• 24:18Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 24:18Keke Palmer?

Then it all feels better because you're like, at least it's going somewhere.

• 24:21Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 24:22Keke Palmer?

It's worth everything I went through.

• 24:23Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 24:23Keke Palmer?

Because it's gonna make it easy for the next person.

• 24:25Speaker 01

That's why I tell my kids, we're never losing, we're only learning.

• 24:28Keke Palmer?

  Mm-hmm.

• 24:28Speaker 01

And that will become a story you get to share.

• 24:30Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, yes.

• 24:31Speaker 01

And for me, it's so many things, and for them, it's like tic-tac-toe. But like, you know what I mean? I'm like, but like, yeah, but for me, it's like anything, whether it's like going through an IVF journey, or

• 24:43Keke Palmer?

  Ah.

• 24:43Speaker 01

having a surrogate, or being fat shamed, or, you know, experiencing secondhand homophobia and transphobia, trying to protect a community, or not even being a resume snob when I'm trying to hire a very diverse casting crew, it's like

• 24:57Keke Palmer?

Come on with that resume snob.

• 24:58Speaker 01

Do you know, you know what I mean?

• 25:00Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, it's real, it's real.

• 25:01Speaker 01

Like, people have done the work, they just don't have the little line.

• 25:03Keke Palmer?

  That's

• 25:03Speaker 01

So just give them the line.

• 25:04Keke Palmer?

  Girl, I'm really

• 25:05Speaker 01

  Give them the job.

• 25:06Keke Palmer?

  Serious.

• 25:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:07Keke Palmer?

Sometimes it's just like, man, all I did was, I'm sorry I didn't go to the school, but you know what, I put the hours in, give me a

• 25:12Speaker 01

  Oh, 100%.

• 25:13Keke Palmer?

That's how I've felt in many times in my career where I've diversified.

• 25:16Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 25:17Keke Palmer?

Where it's like, I know I don't necessarily have this, this school thing for this, you know, but hey, I am, I am studying culture. This is cultural studies for me.

• 25:24Speaker 01

  100%.

• 25:25Keke Palmer?

You know what I mean? This is what my mission is. I am, I am experiencing this so I can talk about it.

• 25:29Speaker 01

I think imposter syndrome is something that is also set in, um, not to take it back to the patriarchy, but here we are, as a form of control.

• 25:37Keke Palmer?

  It's all around us.

• 25:37Speaker 01

Yeah, as a form of control, no, you can't do that. You know, you need a degree, or you need X amount of whatever, and I'm just like, do we, or do we just need instinct?

• 25:46Keke Palmer?

And intentionality, integrity, you know, I think those things I value. Why are you doing what you're doing? If it's just, I don't know that I love it from a superficial level. But if you're doing it because you care, you're concerned, you're really interested in the subject, and this is what you, you want, then I know you're gonna keep getting better at it. Because I could tell it's coming from a true place. I wish that was honored more.

• 26:05Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 26:05Keke Palmer?

Um, there's something else that I wanted to point out on what you said, because I think it's something that's important for people that are dealing with, um, opposition from any angle. Going back to what you said about the professor is, the way that you spoke about what he said, I think is a key. Because you said, "Well, it was a fact."

• 26:24Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 26:24Keke Palmer?

Um, it being a fact doesn't mean it's kind, doesn't mean that it's, it doesn't mean actually any of those things.

• 26:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 26:32Keke Palmer?

You were able to reach out of that moment and just address the reality of that. And I think that that is something that, like, that's a very powerful survival mechanism. Some people might call it detachment. Right. Some people might call it disassociation, detachment, whatever. And that might be valid, but I do think a certain amount of that is needed and necessary

• 26:50Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 26:51Keke Palmer?

for you to succeed in life.

• 26:52Speaker 01

Yeah, because then I liken it to, I'm so sorry about my movie references. They're just like nerdy white boy references, but like, Pet Detective? When like homeboys like, uh, or home, I don't remember who the [BLEEP] was like obsessed with laces out.

• 27:05Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 27:05Speaker 01

Your whole life has become laces out, and the way you didn't kick a ball. It's like, that one thing cannot define your whole, like, you cannot blame that one thing. Because then you're also giving somebody else power. You have the power. When people ask me for advice, I'm like, "How to make money." I'm like, "You're asking the wrong question."

• 27:23Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 27:24Speaker 01

The money is still power, okay? It's still somebody else giving you something. The thing you should be telling yourself is, "Don't tell yourself no before someone tells you no."

• 27:34Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 27:34Speaker 01

You're the only one that [BLEEP] matters. You know what I mean?

• 27:37Keke Palmer?

That is, that is that Scorpio, Miss Girl. Not to bring you to a [BLEEP]. But there's an amount of selfishness that I think everybody needs to allow themselves to have. You have to be the most important, coolest person in your life to you. And that, to me, is what builds confidence.

• 27:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:52Keke Palmer?

And I think a lot of people look to you, you think about survival of the thickest, we think about... Your success, I think that is such a big part of it is this extreme confidence that you exude. Is this something, and maybe this is a silly question because you already kind of answered it, but is it something that you feel you was born with, or is it something that you choose every day? How does this confidence come to you?

• 28:10Speaker 01

I think a little bit of both. I think I had it and then society tried to say, no, no, no. And I was like, maybe, and then finally I was like, oh, oh, yes, I'm here, stop it.

• 28:22Keke Palmer?

  Yes!

• 28:23Speaker 01

You know what I mean, like, stop it.

• 28:24Keke Palmer?

You stop it, because who was you playing with? Not me! Girl, why do they try to do that?

• 28:29Speaker 01

And it shows up in every, it shows up in furniture. There's no, there aren't chairs to fit my beautiful round ass. It shows up in wardrobe. I can't find something to fit my beautiful size eighteen twenty body.

• 28:44Keke Palmer?

  Okay!

• 28:45Speaker 01

But I'm just like, I'm gonna figure it out and keep it moving and sit and spin and enjoy my life.

• 28:50Keke Palmer?

Yes, because why not? Why, why, why should I be in a bad mood about this [BLEEP] that don't even really matter to me?

• 28:55Speaker 01

  You can't.

• 28:56Keke Palmer?

By the way, that means I can make more custom looks, you don't have it.

• 29:00Speaker 01

I would love more custom looks. I would also love a turnkey experience of just going into the store and buying something. And that's why I made my character a stylist, because I'm like, it was just like a perfect job because, you know, having parents from the Caribbean, being a stylist would not be a real job to them, like, maybe like people could dress themselves, and when I told them I was gonna do comedy, they're just like, but you're still gonna have a job, right?

• 29:22Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 29:22Speaker 01

And so, that was a great parallel, but then also I want to showcase the discrepancies in the fashion industry and what that actually means. Not just being a bigger body, but also, you know, whatever gender expression means, and why that's such a hot topic, and why people living their most authentic truth bothers people. It all comes down to control.

• 29:43Keke Palmer?

Yes, and other people feeling like the world told me no, so why should you get to say yes? That's the biggest thing.

• 29:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 29:50Keke Palmer?

You know, across any, any marginalized group people.

• 29:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 29:55Keke Palmer?

It's always the audacity you have to have joy and be happy.

• 29:59Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 29:59Keke Palmer?

And I can't find it in myself, and the world told me I should have it easier.

• 30:02Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 30:02Keke Palmer?

They got [BLEEP] to do with me.

• 30:04Speaker 01

  Yes!

• 30:04Keke Palmer?

You know what I mean? I love also what you're talking about with the fashion. I want to know your relationship with fashion.

• 30:10Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 30:11Keke Palmer?

Obviously, you made it a center point in the show.

• 30:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 30:13Keke Palmer?

To have, you know, and it's so weird, I have this confusion when it comes to fashion, because we can have somebody like Andre Leon Tally.

• 30:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 30:20Keke Palmer?

But then people still don't consider size and like you said, this turnkey experience in fashion.

• 30:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 30:26Keke Palmer?

But we have so many people in fashion that are revered, we have people that are revered.

• 30:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 30:31Keke Palmer?

That were not what you apparently were saying the typical vibe should be. So what does that mean? I mean, maybe don't answer to this, but I'm curious what you think.

• 30:39Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, it's always felt like the, um, it's cool if it's international, unattainable on the cool kids club. If it's like that couture world, but I'm talking about like the everyday experience. I'm talking about like, um, the sister in Oklahoma that needs to get a men's Taco Bell uniform because they don't have her size and she can't bend over properly without showing her biscuits. I'm talking about like, you know, finally being able to afford going to a nice spa and you ain't got no robes to fit my body. Like, what are we saying?

• 31:10Keke Palmer?

  That's right.

• 31:11Speaker 01

Like, finally I get to afford a, um, mammogram and there's no, um, you know, robes to fit over my body and so I need two robes. It's just, you know, it's just like this lack of, um, understanding. It's like this chip. And so, you know, I, I think, yes, the people, the fun people in the fashion industry, yes, but it's gotta trickle down at some point because we are all deserving of, um, to feel that like love and light and sexiness and fierceness that everybody else has. Like, we deserve to feel that too. And by we, I mean like, I always say the arty bodies and the fatty baddies, you know, the non-binary royalty.

• 31:52Speaker 01

Like, everybody is just like, where do I go? It's like, you know, you should be able to go here.

• 31:57Keke Palmer?

When it comes to these money people, all I want to say also to, because I feel like-

• 32:00Speaker 01

The money people. I love it.

• 32:02Keke Palmer?

Right. So maybe this reaches you guys is you leaving a lot of money on the table.

• 32:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 32:06Keke Palmer?

You know, because it's like, I don't know how else to reach them?

• 32:09Speaker 01

  No.

• 32:09Keke Palmer?

Because it's like, this is also a whole white space.

• 32:12Speaker 01

  I know.

• 32:13Keke Palmer?

  So what are you doing?

• 32:13Speaker 01

I know. It's sad that it has to be in those terms. Do you know what I mean?

• 32:18Keke Palmer?

  It is.

• 32:18Speaker 01

But like, as a producer, you could be producing stuff, we want to spend our money.

• 32:21Keke Palmer?

  You know what I mean?

• 32:22Speaker 01

Yes. But, you know, I, it's, it's also like bigger picture. Like, for me, I'm just like, well, damn, if, if healthcare is a luxury, then of course I can't get a size 18 so-and-so. Do you know what I mean?

• 32:33Keke Palmer?

  The healthcare thing is crazy.

• 32:35Speaker 01

  It's insane.

• 32:36Keke Palmer?

It's just, and it's almost like, um, I feel like with a lot of this stuff. That we're talking about across the board, um, you know, any of the isms?

• 32:45Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 32:46Keke Palmer?

Or the obias, or the phobia, you know, the transphobic, homophobic.

• 32:49Speaker 01

  Fatphobic.

• 32:50Keke Palmer?

Fatphobic, all the phobics as well. I feel like I don't really know how, I don't know that there ever be a moment where I'm gonna snap my fingers and it's gonna be over.

• 32:58Speaker 01

  Right. Not in our lifetime.

• 33:00Keke Palmer?

  You know, that is.

• 33:01Speaker 01

  Not in our lifetime.

• 33:02Keke Palmer?

You know, and same thing with the healthcare.

• 33:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 33:03Keke Palmer?

You know, and some, some of these, it, it almost feels as if some of these issues, they wanted to continue.

• 33:10Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 33:10Keke Palmer?

Like it's a part of the lifeline of the continuum.

• 33:11Speaker 01

Well, that's how we were made, right? And so I feel like, we have what, three hundred and thirty million people in America? You ever been out to dinner with like twenty people? And how hard it is to order food?

• 33:23Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 33:23Speaker 01

  Nobody can decide.

• 33:24Keke Palmer?

  That's why it's like buffet.

• 33:25Speaker 01

Yes. Well, we are a buffet. And none of it makes sense, and none of it goes together. And that's what it is right now. And it would be nice if somebody came in, or a lot of people came in. I'm just, I need a hero. You know what I mean?

• 33:36Keke Palmer?

  Okay, I need a hero!

• 33:38Speaker 01

Yes, you know what I mean?

• 33:39Keke Palmer?

  Girl, that's real though.

• 33:41Speaker 01

  I need a hero.

• 33:41Keke Palmer?

That's why we like the movies. That's why I do think the Marvel movies and all that stuff is popular right now. It's because people are like, bring somebody in to fix this [BLEEP].

• 33:47Speaker 01

  Truly.

• 33:48Keke Palmer?

Today, because we are in Gotham, honey.

• 33:50Speaker 01

Yeah, this is crazy. People are like, get off of social media and recognize what's going on, but it's just like, social media is all we have. Like, just give me, like, the more war I see, the more three ingredient vegan in a blender cake recipes I also need.

• 34:05Keke Palmer?

Girl, that cooking is what's keeping me alive.

• 34:07Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 34:07Keke Palmer?

Sliding down, saying, no, just, I watch the videos.

• 34:10Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 34:10Keke Palmer?

But I do have this weird thing, thinking that suddenly I can cook from watching it.

• 34:14Speaker 01

  I know.

• 34:15Keke Palmer?

  I don't think it's true, though.

• 34:16Speaker 01

Well, that's like what social media makes you do. It makes you think you can be a photographer, a model, a comedian. That's what it makes you do. It's a false of security. It is, it is.

• 34:25Keke Palmer?

  False.

• 34:25Speaker 01

  Um, modern day Viagra.

• 34:30Speaker 01

Everyone's watching Instagram and all the blood's going to their dick.

• 34:34Keke Palmer?

Oh, my gosh, I'm howling. It's making them excited.

• 34:36Speaker 01

  It is.

• 34:37Keke Palmer?

  It's true.

• 34:38Speaker 01

  Anyways.

• 34:39Keke Palmer?

  Survivor Little Thiccies, third season.

• 34:42Speaker 01

  Wait, have you watched it?

• 34:43Keke Palmer?

Yes, of course. My mom too.

• 34:45Speaker 01

  Really?

• 34:46Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 34:46Speaker 01

Oh, my God, your mom, but it's like a little sexy. It's a little raunchy.

• 34:49Keke Palmer?

My mom used to watch, her favorite show was The L Word.

• 34:52Speaker 01

  Oh, [BLEEP].

• 34:52Keke Palmer?

  For many years.

• 34:53Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 34:54Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 34:55Speaker 01

  I love that for her.

• 34:56Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, yeah. So.

• 34:59Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 34:59Keke Palmer?

Um. Back to this, this is the final season.

• 35:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:04Keke Palmer?

  How are you feeling?

• 35:06Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 35:06Keke Palmer?

What did you, what, what, what, what, you know, just, what does this moment mean to you? And what's next? I mean, that's an annoying question, what's next? But I mean, what's next?

• 35:14Speaker 01

That's so funny. You said that's so funny. It is, because I feel like every color of the rainbow is every emotion I feel. Like, I feel so [BLEEP] lucky that I get to have three seasons of a show because.

• 35:26Keke Palmer?

  Yes, that's rare.

• 35:27Speaker 01

I used to fly myself out on miles and points to LA for pilot season in the middle seat just to read seven lines next to somebody and hope that I get the, the, the gig. You know what I mean? Like, the amount of clothes I bought at Macy's and returned, that's not my bad, it's yours. Your return policy is trash and I love it. It's, it's, you know, because I couldn't afford to keep the clothes and stuff and, and just the amount of ideas that I've written down on pieces of paper to, and the imposter syndrome that came with writing the book of just like, I don't even read books, who could read that book? Type stuff. And, and to finish the book and then have the book turn into three seasons of storytelling and friendship and wild as just wonderment. And then also to employ so many, um, beautiful, black, brown, fat, queer, like, there's people

• 36:12Speaker 01

saving up for top surgeries. Like, it's so like, what it, what it has done is just, oh, filled like my heart, like, my heart is full and so are my panties. And is that too much? Anyways. Full of what? Love, love as well. Love as well. No, don't share. Forty-nine, still got, oh, well, just kidding. It was just a big deal, you guys, come on. Um, but I am truly one sneeze away from ruining this chair. Do you like this chair? No, it's borrowed, right? We have another one. The point is, if you have two We're Fair Carpets, you have another chair. But the point is. Oh, my gosh. But the point is, it's like, I do feel everything. It's, it's, I, it's bittersweet. Like, I don't want it to end. It'd be nice if it can go on longer, but good things are meant to end. And what's next?

• 36:56Speaker 01

It's like, I'm supposed to be doing this for the rest of my life, so I don't know what's next. And that's the exciting part, too. I wrote another hour of stand-up. I'm currently touring it right now, which is like so [BLEEP] dope.

• 37:05Keke Palmer?

Oh, my gosh. I mean, how is this, how are the? Themes of messiness, women being able to be nuanced, all these different archetypes that we don't get to see. How is that showing up in your material now?

• 37:15Speaker 01

  Oh, my gosh.

• 37:16Keke Palmer?

  Especially post show.

• 37:16Speaker 01

It's, um, it's again, lawless is the word, no one's safe, in a good way, in a good way. You know what I mean? Because what we need to do is just laugh. We need.

• 37:25Keke Palmer?

  We need that, babe.

• 37:26Speaker 01

Yes. And I want, I want people to laugh so hard, they like also pee themselves, which won't be hard because my demo is over forty-five.

• 37:37Speaker 01

Bathing suit bottoms. I should sell bathing suit bottoms as merch.

• 37:41Keke Palmer?

No, by the way, also a full on like any type of line, any type of anything.

• 37:46Speaker 01

  Any type of anything.

• 37:47Keke Palmer?

  Like, we buying it.

• 37:48Speaker 01

  Oh, man.

• 37:49Keke Palmer?

  You're very much that girl.

• 37:50Speaker 01

  I am.

• 37:51Keke Palmer?

  It's just like.

• 37:54Speaker 01

Everything you do, I'm just like, muh.

• 37:56Keke Palmer?

It's back at you. It's back at you. Um, you started as a voice that people recognize on VH1, doing, yeah, doing stand-up. I mean, when did you realize that that was not just a conversation that you wanted to be in, but you wanted to create?

• 38:13Speaker 01

Um, I think I always wanted to, I think I knew that I always wanted to create it. I didn't know. I, I, I just thought I was like a hands-on person, uh, you know?

• 38:22Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 38:23Speaker 01

Coming from a production background, because my professor told me I was too fat to be on TV, I was like, oh, you're right. So I went into production, I started editing and field producing, and I love to know how the sausage is made, for real, for real.

• 38:35Keke Palmer?

  Me too.

• 38:36Speaker 01

  You know?

• 38:36Keke Palmer?

  I really do.

• 38:37Speaker 01

It's so fun. I think it's really, I think every little job, it is, it's so beautiful. It's like building a wall of happiness and everybody's like a little brick. Oh, my God.

• 38:47Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 38:48Speaker 01

  What's love? So anyways.

• 38:52Speaker 01

But I don't remember the question. I am blacking out.

• 38:56Keke Palmer?

We were just talking about just.

• 38:57Speaker 01

  Oh, VH1.

• 38:58Keke Palmer?

Yeah, VH1. Yeah, we're talking about VH1 and how you realized you wanted to be. This is the thing, I think there's one thing about stepping into the box of something, which is there's nothing wrong with that, where it's like, you know, especially as actors, there are roles, you see roles, I want to be in that role.

• 39:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:12Keke Palmer?

But then there are also, like you're saying, producers, people that create the conversation, that builds the role.

• 39:17Speaker 01

Yeah, yes. And I didn't know that, I thought I was just like a very hands-on talent, because I am coming from the stand-up world.

• 39:24Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 39:24Speaker 01

And I didn't realize I was like producing stuff for free, you know, writing stuff for free, improv-ing, but I'm just like, if I'm here, let's just make it better. Do you know what I mean? Like, yes, everyone should be getting paid what they get paid, but I'm just like, there's nothing wrong with just, mm, making it better. And, and I love working with people who want to make it better as well, you know, because I feel like we only fly.

• 39:43Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 39:43Speaker 01

You know, we like inspire each other.

• 39:45Keke Palmer?

Yeah, I mean, that's just also just the bomb quality. Everybody does not have that, and it is beautiful to see when people have that ability to push the narratives forward.

• 39:54Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 39:54Keke Palmer?

You know what I'm saying? Because that's what keeps things going.

• 39:56Speaker 01

  That's exciting for me.

• 39:58Keke Palmer?

Can we talk about how you also made history? As being the first woman to film a comedy special on Radio City Hall?

• 40:11Keke Palmer?

Let me walk you through my Tuesday. I woke up and immediately had to decide what to wear to a meeting, what to feed my son, whether I'm taking the call from my car or rescheduling, and it's not even 8 a.m. yet. By noon, I've made 100 decisions, and I'm already over it. So the things in my life that don't require me to think, those are sacred. That's exactly what Fruit of the Loom Women's Underwear is for me. I open the drawer, I grab a pair, and I already know it's going to be comfortable and fit right. There's no guessing, no adjusting, no, "let me try another pair" moment. It just works. When your whole day is full of decisions that actually need your energy, having that kind of simplicity in your routine creates real peace of mind.

• 40:53Keke Palmer?

And trust me, that feels really, really good. Fruit of the Loom proves that simple feels really good.

• 41:02Keke Palmer?

There are two versions of me at any given moment. There's the version that is on the way somewhere, locked in, unbothered, do not interrupt me, I have a purpose. And then there's the version that sees a Starbucks and just turns, mid-stride with absolutely no hesitation. The second one is my favorite version, especially in the summer. I'm the one who orders a Tropical Butterfly Refresher, guava and passion fruit flavors, these mango pineapple flavored pearls that pop in your mouth, and a butterfly pea flower infusion on top that just shifts the color of the whole drink right in front of you. And I stand there watching it happen like it's the most important thing that happened all week, because it might be. One small choice can lead to a whole shift. Unlock your best summer memories with the Tropical Butterfly Refresher from Starbucks.

• 41:46Keke Palmer?

  Order now on the app.

• 41:50Keke Palmer?

Like, what was that, what was, what was that for you?

• 41:53Speaker 01

  Um...

• 41:54Keke Palmer?

Like, was that always a dream, or did it, did it just fall on your lap and it was like, by the way, you know you're the first woman to do radio?

• 42:00Speaker 01

No, like, I, so I don't set, the only dream I have every day is to be happy.

• 42:06Keke Palmer?

  Okay.

• 42:06Speaker 01

You know, and then like also to challenge myself, to push myself. And so, the fact that like, the fact that I'm a size 18, 20, and that I'm a woman, and I believe that I'm worthy of love, is already just like, who this bitch, right? And so, I was very, thank you for laughing, because it is funny. But, you know, as I'm like, shopping venues for my comedy special, I'm looking at the venues we can afford, right, because there's a budget. And I put Radio City Music Hall on the list because I knew I couldn't afford it, but I just want to see it like, in the day, when it's quiet. And it's sort of like, being on, say yes to the dress and trying on the Nina Paterno, whatever the [BLEEP] that her name is.

• 42:50Speaker 01

Like, what is, the dress that you can't afford, you're just like, just jack it up and let me see. And, you know, it's like, out of our budget, but I just want to see that howl. You know, and then when I walked into Radio City, it's just like the, like the seeds are like this beautiful rosé color, and that's like my favorite drink, and I was like, no. And the stage is so big, but I'm like, I'm not a dancer.

• 43:07Keke Palmer?

  Stop!

• 43:08Speaker 01

It's like, it just begs like for a-

• 43:11Keke Palmer?

  You're ridiculous.

• 43:11Speaker 01

You know what I mean, but it begs for a band, like, eh, hit me three times, you know, it's just like, it just- Thanks for that.

• 43:18Keke Palmer?

  True thing.

• 43:19Speaker 01

But there's something so beautiful and magical about it where it feels intimate even though it's very big, much like my vagina, just kidding. Good guys, come on, there's so many cameras. Yeah, anyways, I mean, truly, truly, we went to B and H and got all the things.

• 43:36Keke Palmer?

That's so cute, it's too much.

• 43:38Speaker 01

It's too much, it's just enough. So anyways, is it giving Star Trek, is it giving like Dominican reboot a Star Trek? Anyways.

• 43:47Keke Palmer?

  Yo.

• 43:48Speaker 01

So I asked the lady showing us around, I'm like, this, this place obviously is amazing. And I'm like, what other females have recorded, recorded their special here? And she's like, oh, no one. I'm like, what? And she's like, no one. Lots of people have sold out for decades, obviously. No one's recorded a special here. And then I got like this thing in my, well, some would say acid reflux, but I say instinct.

• 44:13Keke Palmer?

  Okay, where's the Pepsi at?

• 44:15Speaker 01

I know, I was like, tom, to tom, tom, toms. And I was like, I have to do it. And because now it would mean something. And I'm like, oh, now I have to do it. But when you do a special, you do a late show and an early show to edit and mix both of the shows. But because there was like 6,000 seats, I could only afford to do one show.

• 44:37Keke Palmer?

  Oh.

• 44:38Speaker 01

Yeah, so I was like, we gonna go, we gonna act like this is a live show, live to tape. I'm already editing outside of my body.

• 44:45Keke Palmer?

Okay, girl, I live for the disembodiment of it all.

• 44:49Speaker 01

  You know what I mean?

• 44:50Keke Palmer?

It's the room of the room of the room of the room. What is, why do we go there? And is that also like, is that just like?

• 44:55Speaker 01

  It's amazing.

• 44:56Keke Palmer?

Why do we do that? Is that, does that mean we're traumatized? Like, how does this, what does this mean?

• 44:59Speaker 01

It means we're operating on a different plane.

• 45:01Keke Palmer?

  Come on!

• 45:02Speaker 01

It means that nobody can with us because we are, yes.

• 45:06Keke Palmer?

Oh, I didn't know what we were doing, I thought you were just, ah!

• 45:09Speaker 01

Yes, that's what it is. I mean, we are amazing.

• 45:12Keke Palmer?

  I'm with it heavy.

• 45:13Speaker 01

  Look.

• 45:14Keke Palmer?

Because it's like, I'm already at the end of the combo and you just in the middle of the sentence.

• 45:18Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 45:19Keke Palmer?

  How that you girl?

• 45:20Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 45:21Keke Palmer?

  Period.

• 45:22Speaker 01

  It was great.

• 45:23Keke Palmer?

Oh, my gosh, best experience ever.

• 45:24Speaker 01

  Yeah, it was pretty good.

• 45:25Keke Palmer?

Um, you mentioned this earlier, about the not punching down.

• 45:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 45:31Keke Palmer?

Comedians not punching down, all this kinds of stuff.

• 45:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 45:33Keke Palmer?

Do you feel, and I'm just gonna ask it, do you feel like, also as a comedian, is your job to kind of speak to culture?

• 45:43Speaker 01

It depends on what kind of comedy you do.

• 45:45Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 45:46Speaker 01

It depends on what kind of comedy you do, but at, you know, at some point, you have to, you ha- you just have to. There's too many platforms for us not to say something.

• 45:55Keke Palmer?

Yeah, or to have some type of material that could be inspired by it.

• 45:58Speaker 01

And even if it's not material, just say it in a, there's so many podcasts and interviews and stuff that, that, do you know what I mean? And so, I'm just like, where is the love?

• 46:08Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 46:08Speaker 01

Where is the love for communities? You know, I'm just like, everybody can't be the butt of a joke when we have like this, this monster, uh, heading this crazy administration. We have to protect each other. Like, yes, it is a, to me, it's a cheap joke to, uh, make fun of a minority within a minority. They cannot protect themselves. Uh, uh, no matter where they turn.

• 46:32Keke Palmer?

And it reminds me of just like when people, it's almost like sometimes people assume that just because they're including, that's enough. Even if the framing of it is incorrect. It's almost like when I used to watch like, shows, like early shows from the 90s, the joke is like, and then a black person walks in. That was the joke.

• 46:47Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's it.

• 46:48Keke Palmer?

And I'm like, that was the joke? Like, I watch old shows now and it's like, and next thing you know,

• 46:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:54Keke Palmer?

It was a girl. And it's like, her being a one, just her being a her.

• 46:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:57Keke Palmer?

  Just them being, uh, black.

• 47:00Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 47:00Keke Palmer?

  Or a person of color.

• 47:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:01Keke Palmer?

It made it immediately a joke. And that's what it feels like as well now. When it comes to that, well, I included you in the conversation. So that's me. And it's like, well, we, we have to move, you know, what are you saying?

• 47:13Speaker 01

Yeah. And the thing is too, it's like, it's easy. Like, it's just, it's easy. And so that's why I challenge, uh, comedians to make it funny.

• 47:24Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 47:25Speaker 01

Can you make it funny? Can you actually love somebody and support them and make it funny? I can.

• 47:31Keke Palmer?

Woo! Is there anything that you, that people hated that you said that you were like, well, I needed to say it and that you made funny?

• 47:39Speaker 01

  I mean.

• 47:40Keke Palmer?

  Probably so many stuff.

• 47:41Speaker 01

  Yeah, I mean.

• 47:42Keke Palmer?

So many stuff, wow, my grammar.

• 47:43Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, like, truly, like, people, people are offended that I even exist, you know what I mean?

• 47:49Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 47:50Speaker 01

That's on you, boo, you sound very unhappy, you sound like you do not have good food and orgasms.

• 47:55Keke Palmer?

Oh, my gosh, you mentioned how, what somebody eats says a lot about how they have sex.

• 48:00Speaker 01

  It does.

• 48:00Keke Palmer?

Let's get into this because I'm scared, girl, I feel that I'm a little vanilla.

• 48:04Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 48:04Keke Palmer?

But maybe, maybe I'm not. Help, help me, like, what can I reveal?

• 48:09Speaker 01

But the thing is, it's like vanilla is not bad, vanilla could be, um, it's pure estate. Like Gordon Ramsay's just like, you don't need to put anything on it, it's just salt, pepper, and butter, or whatever, you know what I mean?

• 48:19Keke Palmer?

Oh, my gosh, I'm macaroni and cheese.

• 48:21Speaker 01

  Are you?

• 48:22Keke Palmer?

I mean, now, well, just based off of that, macaroni and cheese is, you know what I mean?

• 48:25Speaker 01

  To keep it basic.

• 48:26Keke Palmer?

  To keep it basic.

• 48:27Speaker 01

I don't like a lot of cream, I like more cheese, but we could, you know.

• 48:30Keke Palmer?

That's what he said. I'm kidding.

• 48:32Speaker 01

  Wow. Wow.

• 48:34Keke Palmer?

  You're rubbing off on me.

• 48:35Speaker 01

  I love.

• 48:36Keke Palmer?

If you're rubbing off, you're rubbing off on me. So, so you can tell by someone's food how much fun they are?

• 48:43Speaker 01

Yeah, or how happy they are.

• 48:45Keke Palmer?

  How happy they are.

• 48:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 48:47Keke Palmer?

Yeah, because it's got to be flavorful.

• 48:49Speaker 01

I think so, or, and also, like, um, also, people are like, um, picky eaters, or like scared of something. And I, it, it's also interesting, um, because to me, it's giving indecisive.

• 49:03Keke Palmer?

  Okay.

• 49:04Speaker 01

Like, they don't trust themselves or something, but I do love when someone's like, open about it. Or just like, I'm, I'm a picky eater, I don't even know why, let's just, you know what I mean?

• 49:13Keke Palmer?

  That's fun.

• 49:14Speaker 01

I think accountability and openness is so sexy.

• 49:18Keke Palmer?

I love that, I'm about to start asking, I'm about to start judging that, in a proper way, but I'm gonna be like, so what you like to eat?

• 49:24Speaker 01

I, you know, I never liked.

• 49:26Keke Palmer?

It's a good way to do it.

• 49:27Speaker 01

Well, that's, well, we're talking about food, right?

• 49:33Speaker 01

I don't know, I got to ask. The whole body's a precious menu, honey.

• 49:38Keke Palmer?

  I love that.

• 49:39Speaker 01

You know, and I never liked going out on dates, like dinner dates, but now I understand why. You have to see how someone treats the waitstaff and their table manners. Because I'm giving you a seat at my table, you coming with manners?

• 49:52Keke Palmer?

  Okay.

• 49:52Speaker 01

And then also to see how they chew.

• 49:55Keke Palmer?

  Oh, my gosh.

• 49:57Speaker 01

  The chewing, what is it?

• 49:58Keke Palmer?

Chewing is bad for me, like when I hear it.

• 50:01Speaker 01

Oh, it's like a wet bag of dicks.

• 50:03Keke Palmer?

You know what I mean? It's too much.

• 50:05Speaker 01

  It's a lot.

• 50:05Keke Palmer?

Any type of mouth noises as well for me.

• 50:08Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 50:08Keke Palmer?

Like even if I'm watching a movie and they're kissing.

• 50:11Speaker 01

  Oh, the kissing.

• 50:15Keke Palmer?

  Shut the up.

• 50:17Speaker 01

Do you have a lot of sex, do you do sex scenes?

• 50:19Keke Palmer?

Girl, no, I don't do a lot of them on or off camera.

• 50:22Speaker 01

  Stop it, girl.

• 50:23Keke Palmer?

You know, it's hard out here. Nobody's really looking for a hermeneutical thinker. Everybody wants somebody that is, I don't know, you know. I think it's interesting, right? Because I feel that I'm a funk out, you know, I feel like I'm like, ah, you know, I'm like, I'm ready for it.

• 50:39Keke Palmer?

You know, but I don't know that it gives sex immediately, you know what I mean? But it's okay, we all have our things.

• 50:45Keke Palmer?

I've done like one, I've done like one or two sex scenes in a movie. One was with a girl, which was the most fun, the most amazing. Hey, Haley Ram, love you boo. The other one was with like my big brother, Evan Ross, in TLC. And it wasn't really, I mean, it was just like not even much. So I'm spooked by it.

• 51:00Speaker 01

  Really?

• 51:01Keke Palmer?

  Girl, it scares me.

• 51:03Speaker 01

  Really, why?

• 51:04Keke Palmer?

You know, because it's just like.

• 51:06Speaker 01

Is it the people watching or that you have to like see it later?

• 51:09Keke Palmer?

I mean, now, in a professional environment, I think I'm, I think it's like, you know, I can, I can do it because I'm being professional.

• 51:15Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 51:16Keke Palmer?

  But.

• 51:16Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 51:17Keke Palmer?

On the way there, I'm just laughing and like I'm just, it feels so silly to me because this is my thing with sex. Why are we so serious?

• 51:26Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 51:27Keke Palmer?

You know, sometimes it's like, this is what it's like, it's like this is us before and then now.

• 51:31Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 51:32Keke Palmer?

Why does it have to be that?

• 51:34Speaker 01

I don't think it has to.

• 51:34Keke Palmer?

I don't, I want mine to be like, ah, boy, stop. Yo, I'm hot in here. Turn AC on, not right there, to the left, to the left, to the left, to the left. Remember Beyonce's hit? I want it to feel like that.

• 51:48Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 51:49Keke Palmer?

  Because the. bothers me.

• 51:52Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 51:52Keke Palmer?

  It makes me scared.

• 51:53Speaker 01

  Yeah, I agree.

• 51:54Keke Palmer?

When I have to turn into Sasha Fierce.

• 51:56Speaker 01

I see. No, I see what you mean. Not everybody, yes.

• 51:59Keke Palmer?

  I don't like that.

• 52:00Speaker 01

Somebody wrote a scene where they were like, Michelle, now you do a dance for him. I was like, get the out of here. What are you, I do a, what am I, Cardi B in a J Lo movie?

• 52:09Keke Palmer?

  Come on.

• 52:10Speaker 01

What do you, dance? Can I even walk across the floor without even tripping on something? I have a bunion. What are you, I haven't seen my feet since I was 12. These titties, stop. I'm like, I could barely sit on somebody without even like, losing my keys and with their face. So I'm just like, yeah, okay. But like, I think, you know, um, I think it's exhausting already, but I think it, humor is fun.

• 52:34Keke Palmer?

  That's what I think, boo.

• 52:37Speaker 01

Like, what if, what if, um, Fifty Shades of Grey was just like them trying to crack each other up instead?

• 52:42Keke Palmer?

Oh my, like, oh my gosh, you know, everything, you gotta eat my ass. No, you gotta eat my ass.

• 52:46Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 52:46Keke Palmer?

  That's fun.

• 52:50Speaker 01

Oh my god, this is unhinged in the best way possible.

• 52:54Keke Palmer?

That's, I feel like that, this is to me, and this is also intimacy to me.

• 52:58Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 52:59Keke Palmer?

I think we've also, like, I love that movie, um, with Joseph Gordon Lovett and, um, oh my gosh, Julianne Moore.

• 53:06Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 53:06Keke Palmer?

It's called Don John, and it's about the porn, the rise of porn industry and the commercialization of porn and the normalization of it.

• 53:12Speaker 01

Julianne Moore be out here, huh?

• 53:13Keke Palmer?

Okay, honey, she was teaching him a thing or two.

• 53:15Speaker 01

  About a thing or two.

• 53:16Keke Palmer?

About a thing or two. And what I loved was that she was talking about how intimacy is sometimes lost in the act and the performance of sex.

• 53:25Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 53:26Keke Palmer?

And I feel like that can be very true, and even just be, be to my generation, like, a lot of the young men, you know, that are, you know, we talk about millennials, or, you know, Gen Z or whatever, they, um, have been heavily influenced by sex through porn.

• 53:39Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.

• 53:40Keke Palmer?

And so it becomes this thing where you want me to show up as a character.

• 53:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:44Keke Palmer?

You know what I mean? But I'm not, first of all, you're not paying for me to actor.

• 53:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:47Keke Palmer?

  Let's get that straight.

• 53:48Speaker 01

  By the way.

• 53:48Keke Palmer?

By the way. And then secondly, like, that's not real intimacy to me. Real intimacy is me being the truth of who I am in this moment with you.

• 53:56Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 53:56Keke Palmer?

And that's, I think that's like the thing, right?

• 53:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:59Keke Palmer?

So, yeah, I don't know. Yeah, I feel like.

• 54:01Speaker 01

Being vulnerable is interesting, because, um,

• 54:05Speaker 01

A friend once told me, "Somebody will meet you as deeply as they met themselves." And so that is so true, whether it is in a Zoom meeting or in the bedroom. And I feel like, well, at least what I try to do through sex scenes on my show is not wear a lot of makeup.

• 54:22Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 54:23Speaker 01

Show the soft parts of my body that like people consider problem areas. I say they're human areas. You know, because all of these things are important to showcase. And I think when you do write and act in a sex scene where you are making each other laugh and you're connecting in a different way, before you connect in a different way, is really important. It is the education that you'll never get in school.

• 54:48Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 54:49Speaker 01

You know what I mean? You're not gonna hear that, you know, on the playground with your friends or wherever the other sex education's happening. So that's why like all these things matter. And yeah, I'm excited for you and your sex scene that will be coming up. It's gonna be hilarious.

• 55:03Keke Palmer?

  Coming up soon.

• 55:04Speaker 01

I will, I will write it for you.

• 55:06Keke Palmer?

  Oh, my gosh, girl.

• 55:07Speaker 01

I will write it for you.

• 55:08Keke Palmer?

We need to just do it as one reel. Like it literally starts with the sex scene and ends with it. Like, "I'm here for this." Coming to you guys soon.

• 55:16Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 55:16Keke Palmer?

Coming to you guys soon. Okay, last question before we get into the game.

• 55:19Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 55:19Keke Palmer?

I know, I can't believe that I have to end with you. This is just devastating. You've said you want to upgrade something every year.

• 55:26Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 55:27Keke Palmer?

So what is this year's upgrade? Let me check up on it.

• 55:31Speaker 01

My God, this year's upgrade, you know what? I just, because I'm touring now, I'm like, and everyone's like, "You need to go on vacation." When my friends look at me on FaceTime, they're like, "You need to go on vacation." I'm like, "I don't need to go on vacation. I need to find vacation within every day."

• 55:47Keke Palmer?

  Okay.

• 55:48Speaker 01

You know, I need like a peaceful.

• 55:49Keke Palmer?

  Now, that was a bar.

• 55:50Speaker 01

I need a peaceful moment. You know, whether it's me telling my kids, I cannot, we've already read three books. I cannot, Dr. Seuss is the longest book. You picked it. I gotta, it's too much. It's all the same [BLEEP].

• 56:02Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 56:04Speaker 01

You know how to re- I'm so sorry.

• 56:05Keke Palmer?

And Dr. Seuss be making up anything. We let him get away with so much.

• 56:08Speaker 01

Dr. Seuss, those animals were hitting.

• 56:10Keke Palmer?

And a common a booster deuce.

• 56:12Speaker 01

Yes, I don't want a Fox or Knox.

• 56:15Keke Palmer?

We really let him get away with it. That's Dr. Seuss-ism.

• 56:18Speaker 01

That's so crazy. Eleven fingers. Check yourself, please. You are undoing all the things that they taught you.

• 56:23Keke Palmer?

  So amazing.

• 56:24Speaker 01

You know what I mean? Well, actually, that's what I call my twins, thing one and thing two.

• 56:28Keke Palmer?

Oh, my God. Love it now. Fabulous. Simply fabulous. How old are they now?

• 56:33Speaker 01

  Seven.

• 56:33Keke Palmer?

Seven. What is, what's the new arrival with them? My son is three.

• 56:37Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 56:37Keke Palmer?

And he is talking down, girl.

• 56:40Speaker 01

Three is so cute with their little heads.

• 56:42Keke Palmer?

  Oh, my gosh.

• 56:43Speaker 01

And they like think they're like big kids now.

• 56:45Keke Palmer?

They knowing something. They, he's very like checking. Like last night, tell me why he thought this was gonna offend me. Last night, I was like, it's time to say prayers, you know, put the iPad down for a brief moment. You can have it for fifteen more minutes before you go to bed. But like last one, he said, no, no, no. No, I'm about to unzip your jacket.

• 57:01Speaker 01

  What?

• 57:03Keke Palmer?

He starts unzipping my jacket. Yeah, I'm about to unzip your jacket, mama.

• 57:06Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 57:08Keke Palmer?

Unzip my hoodie. Like, he thought that was like gonna gag me.

• 57:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 57:11Keke Palmer?

And it's like, boy, say this prayer.

• 57:12Speaker 01

Oh, my God. I love it so much.

• 57:14Keke Palmer?

  These kids are crazy.

• 57:15Speaker 01

My daughter is seven, and she wanted a neck tattoo of a heart for her birthday.

• 57:21Keke Palmer?

  Like a real one?

• 57:22Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They're into expressing themselves. And my son wanted an iPhone or to go to Algeria because it's the biggest country in Africa. He's into facts and figures. It's real cute. I, I want them to be smarter than me. Help me. I'm bad at directions and math. Help, mama.

• 57:38Keke Palmer?

Because I can even know where our Algeria was. Don't get me, anybody. I was homeschooled.

• 57:42Speaker 01

  I know. Were you homeschooled?

• 57:44Keke Palmer?

I was homeschooled. It didn't work out. But I do a lot of things well, so, you know, people let me, let me go. You know what I mean? But there's more I can learn. I can be more communicative. It's awareness, right? It's accountability. I can learn more, you know what I mean? But I just feel the dragging happening in the comments already.

• 57:58Speaker 01

  No. I'm so sorry.

• 58:00Keke Palmer?

But that's amazing, though. I love that.

• 58:02Speaker 01

Yeah, I love it too. It's, I, I, they don't, sometimes they feel like my kids, and sometimes they just feel like these beautiful souls that I get to watch, like, see the world through like their eyes or something. Like, it's so crazy.

• 58:13Keke Palmer?

  Gives me a second life.

• 58:15Speaker 01

  It does.

• 58:15Keke Palmer?

And not to say like I'm living through my kids type of thing, but what I mean is, and you probably can relate to this as any mom could, um... Your kid forces you to just be present.

• 58:27Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 58:28Keke Palmer?

Because there's no element of, like all of us, like I could, I could do the whole like, performing as a kid, but not even just performing as a kid.

• 58:37Speaker 01

  Oh, interesting.

• 58:37Keke Palmer?

  Performing as human beings.

• 58:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 58:40Keke Palmer?

We are all doing it to some degree.

• 58:42Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 58:42Keke Palmer?

The moment that we become observed or in relation to somebody, we are expressing a part of ourselves that's not the same self when we just there.

• 58:49Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 58:49Keke Palmer?

At home in a room by ourselves.

• 58:50Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 58:50Keke Palmer?

And so to that point, what the great thing that I feel that has happened after having a kid is that when I'm in the moments, he not expecting nothing.

• 58:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 58:59Keke Palmer?

There's no, there's no performance, there is no expression, there is no anything outside of authen- it's pure that he expects from me.

• 59:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:07Keke Palmer?

And so it's now, it's like now I'm being called to be there.

• 59:10Speaker 01

  It's beautiful.

• 59:11Keke Palmer?

It's the best thing ever, man.

• 59:12Speaker 01

  It really is.

• 59:13Keke Palmer?

  It's really, really cool.

• 59:13Speaker 01

And also it, it takes so much work, it's so much time, that when people are like, why don't we hang? I'm like, I got other things to do.

• 59:22Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 59:23Speaker 01

  I'm so sorry.

• 59:24Keke Palmer?

And then much more exciting, sorry, bye.

• 59:26Speaker 01

  Kind of.

• 59:27Keke Palmer?

Okay, I want to play this game with you before you go.

• 59:29Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 59:29Keke Palmer?

So I host this show called Password. Shout out to Jimmy Fallon.

• 59:32Speaker 01

  Ow!

• 59:33Keke Palmer?

And we give one, like I'm gonna have a word, you're gonna have a word, and we have to get, get each other to guess the word. So like, let's say that the word is pancake, right? In order to get you to say pancake, I might say, if IHOP is one word, I can't use it, I don't think, because it's an acronym.

• 59:47Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 59:48Keke Palmer?

But I would say, let's say IHOP, and then that'd make you say pancake.

• 59:52Speaker 01

Oh man, this is when you break up with me.

• 59:53Keke Palmer?

Oh no, there's no breaking us up.

• 59:55Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 59:56Keke Palmer?

  This is yours.

• 59:56Speaker 01

  Oh [BLEEP].

• 59:57Keke Palmer?

This is mine, and we can just do three to four, okay?

• 1:00:00Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:00:01Keke Palmer?

Do you want me to start, or do you want to start?

• 1:00:03Speaker 01

  I'll start.

• 1:00:03Keke Palmer?

  Okay, let's go.

• 1:00:05Speaker 01

Um, wait, and then I say one word, or a couple?

• 1:00:07Keke Palmer?

So you can, you say one word, and then I'll, and then I'll try to guess.

• 1:00:11Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:00:11Keke Palmer?

Or I'll ask for another word, like I'll ask for another hint.

• 1:00:14Speaker 01

  Got you, sink.

• 1:00:16Keke Palmer?

Sink? That's the first word, sink, sink.

• 1:00:21Speaker 01

  Or, or sank?

• 1:00:23Keke Palmer?

  Sank, sank, sank.

• 1:00:26Speaker 01

Do I say another word now?

• 1:00:27Keke Palmer?

Um, I'll get another hint from you.

• 1:00:29Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:00:29Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, cuz I'm not sure.

• 1:00:31Speaker 01

Me neither. Oh, you, do I give you one?

• 1:00:33Keke Palmer?

  Yes, one more.

• 1:00:34Speaker 01

Oh [BLEEP]. Is there a timer? No. Um, uh, uh, boat.

• 1:00:39Keke Palmer?

  Sank boat Titanic.

• 1:00:41Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:00:41Keke Palmer?

  Boom.

• 1:00:42Speaker 01

  Did I do it right?

• 1:00:43Keke Palmer?

You did it right. Perfect. I love the claps, thank you for the claps. Um, okay.

• 1:00:47Speaker 01

  Oh no.

• 1:00:48Keke Palmer?

  Are you ready for this?

• 1:00:48Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:00:50Keke Palmer?

  Sure.

• 1:00:52Speaker 01

  Albi?

• 1:00:53Keke Palmer?

  Sure.

• 1:00:53Speaker 01

  Lanell?

• 1:00:56Keke Palmer?

  I love Lanell.

• 1:00:57Speaker 01

  Me too.

• 1:00:57Keke Palmer?

Oh my gosh, is she over there with Albi now?

• 1:00:59Speaker 01

  They are.

• 1:01:00Keke Palmer?

  That look good.

• 1:01:00Speaker 01

  I'm so happy for her.

• 1:09:27Keke Palmer?

Michelle, what I love about you is that you don't clean it up for people. You tell it like it is. And this conversation really felt like a reminder that confidence isn't something you're born with. It's something you choose over and over again. And to everybody listening, including me, let's not be afraid to grow and change. And let's definitely remain the main characters of our lives. Take a chance on yourself and don't let anybody telling you no stop you from seeing what's possible, because everything is possible. I'll see you next time on Baby, this is Keke Palmer.
