Sharon Horgan

This week we have Irish comedy royalty round for dinner, the brilliant Sharon Horgan. Sharon popped to New Cross and brought her two gorgeous daughters with her. Mum made a Salmon en croute, and I made a Pannetone Bread and Butter pudding. We learned all about Sharon growing up in pubs in Hackney and Ireland, living in squats and being fed by Hare Krishna, writing and working with friend of the pod Rob Delaney on Catastrophe, filming Bad Sisters in Ireland and creating Motherland and brand new spin off Amandaland (which we’re very excited for!). Sharon is a total delight, and has co-created some of our favourite series on the telly. Bad Sisters is currently in it’s second series and is streaming on Apple TV+ Hosted on Acast. • 1:06Jessie Ware?

Hello and welcome to Table manners. I'm Jessie Ware and I'm here with Lenny. She looks like she's about to start a fight. Are you okay?

• 1:13Speaker 03

Not starting a fight, but I just want you to know

• 1:15Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 1:16Speaker 03

That I rushed back from my school reunion

• 1:19Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 1:19Speaker 03

  To make the main course.

• 1:22Jessie Ware?

  How was your school reunion?

• 1:23Speaker 03

Well, I need to tell you that I didn't know this, that they showed they had a picture of me when I was much younger. One of the girls abroad, one of the women of my age.

• 1:34Jessie Ware?

  Girls?

• 1:34Speaker 03

And my nickname apparently at school was Sexy Lenny.

• 1:38Jessie Ware?

  Oh my God, stop.

• 1:40Speaker 03

And their husbands, who I don't even know, call me Sexy Lenny.

• 1:44Jessie Ware?

Oh my God, that's so weird.

• 1:46Speaker 03

  That's strange.

• 1:47Jessie Ware?

Hold on, this is a school reunion?

• 1:50Speaker 03

Yeah, it was a school lunch.

• 1:52Jessie Ware?

And they all called you sexy. At what age did you get the name Sexy Lenny? At 12 or 13?

• 1:58Speaker 03

I hope not, I hope it was when I was about 18. That's the way I look, darling, it's just oozed sex appeal.

• 2:04Jessie Ware?

  X Factor?

• 2:05Speaker 03

  Oozed it.

• 2:06Jessie Ware?

  In Manchester?

• 2:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:07Jessie Ware?

  You had that?

• 2:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:09Jessie Ware?

How does that make you feel sexy?

• 2:11Speaker 03

I felt quite sexy, I felt quite good to be honest. After that, anyway, I'm going to shout out to my friends who might listen now.

• 2:19Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 2:19Speaker 03

Because they thought I was doing a blog.

• 2:22Jessie Ware?

  A blog.

• 2:23Speaker 03

People, older people always talk about blogs, not podcasts, don't they?

• 2:27Jessie Ware?

  They're about fifteen years behind.

• 2:28Speaker 03

So I'm going to shout out to Adrian, Philippa, Maureen.

• 2:32Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 2:32Speaker 03

  Vanessa, Ruth and Marcel.

• 2:35Jessie Ware?

You know what, if Scott Mills hadn't just got that breakfast gig for Radio Two, I think Lenny, you could have been in for with a chance.

• 2:42Speaker 03

  Do you think?

• 2:43Jessie Ware?

To take over Dear Zoe Ball.

• 2:45Speaker 03

  Do you think?

• 2:46Jessie Ware?

I have to do my own shout out. We had a big birthday party at the weekend.

• 2:49Speaker 03

The best party in the whole.

• 2:52Jessie Ware?

It was pretty amazing. Me and Sam had a joint fortieth and ten year wedding anniversary, which I think on reflection maybe appears quite smug. And I apologize if anyone thinks that's smug, but we decided to quite camply renew our vows. Dressed almost like a poor man's Sunny and Cher. Sam had hair for the first time and I think in his life, he wore a wig. I wore a wig, the kids were there, it was really amazing. And we had the most amazing band that we'd seen at Wilderness called Brassique. And if anybody is at festivals this year, it was their second gig and I saw them and I was completely mad about them at the festival. And so I messaged them to see if they wanted to do it and they did. And I'm so lucky because they were unbelievable. I walked down the aisle to.

• 3:37Speaker 03

  Nessun Dorma.

• 3:38Jessie Ware?

A beautiful queen singing Nessun Dorma. It was fab. And also dear darling Bessley, who is my favourite DJ in the world, also brought her gorgeous Ooh La La macarons. As our kind of tower of birthday cake, because I think birthday cake can be quite overrated sometimes and the macarons were perfect. So thank you so much, Bessley. But we had the best time. It was wicked. It was at Riverley Ballroom, which is the most beautiful venue. Everyone dressed up, everyone danced and.

• 4:14Jessie Ware?

  I'm a bit sad it's over.

• 4:15Speaker 03

  I know.

• 4:16Jessie Ware?

  Onto the podcast.

• 4:19Jessie Ware?

We have somebody that I am quite mad about. I was obsessed with her when Catastrophe came out. We've had her co-star from Catastrophe on a few weeks ago, Rob Delaney. It's Sharon Horgan. I approached Sharon Horgan at, I think, a glamour awards show and just shouted in her face that something probably, that I loved her. And she was very nice to me. She's gone on to do amazing things since Catastrophe. This Way Up with Ashling B, who we adore, which I thought was like two of the most brilliant series. And I want to know whether that's going to come back. But we're here to talk about her latest.

• 5:03Speaker 03

  Bad Sisters.

• 5:04Jessie Ware?

Bad Sisters, second season on Apple TV Plus. And those sisters.

• 5:10Speaker 03

  They are bad.

• 5:11Jessie Ware?

They are badass. They are amazing. The sorority and just how, well Sharon, so I think it was a, it was a story, a Belgian story that Sharon and her production team adapted. And now we're into the second season. And yeah, there's a big shock in the second episode, which I did not see coming. And Sharon's come on to talk about Bad Sisters.

• 5:38Speaker 03

So I have just come to motherland.

• 5:40Jessie Ware?

  Where have you been, Mum?

• 5:41Speaker 03

I know, but I thought it was for more your age group and I wouldn't enjoy it.

• 5:45Jessie Ware?

  You're a mother.

• 5:47Speaker 03

But I want to know which one she'd be. Liz is my favourite.

• 5:51Jessie Ware?

  The northern.

• 5:52Speaker 03

The northern one, she's the best.

• 5:54Jessie Ware?

So yeah, we, she's worked with Sarah Jessica Parker on Divorce. She's prolific.

• 5:59Speaker 03

  I've watched all of that.

• 6:00Jessie Ware?

And what have you made, Mum?

• 6:02Speaker 03

I've made a salmon en croute with a dill.

• 6:06Jessie Ware?

We haven't done that ever, I think, on the podcast.

• 6:08Speaker 03

  A dill beurre blanc sauce.

• 6:10Jessie Ware?

Did you go for the prosecco sauce?

• 6:12Speaker 03

No, I put white wine in. And I might put a drop more in because it doesn't taste very winey to me.

• 6:18Jessie Ware?

Do you want to glass of wine now?

• 6:19Speaker 03

  I need something.

• 6:21Jessie Ware?

Okay. Sharon Horgan coming up on table eyes.

• 6:40Speaker 04

I might take my jacket off, that's alright.

• 6:42Jessie Ware?

You look, can I just say, Sharon Horgan has just come in.

• 6:45Speaker 03

She looks like one of Charlie's angels.

• 6:47Speaker 04

  Yeah, oh really?

• 6:49Speaker 03

  She's gorgeous.

• 6:50Jessie Ware?

  You look unbelievable.

• 6:51Speaker 04

Well, I'm doing this, you know, press tour for Bad Sisters, so this very nice lady Rachel, who you know.

• 6:59Jessie Ware?

Who we made friends with at Comic Relief.

• 7:01Speaker 03

  Oh, was that her?

• 7:02Jessie Ware?

  This week.

• 7:03Speaker 04

  Right.

• 7:03Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 7:04Speaker 04

Well, she's given me a load of nice outfits, so this is one of them.

• 7:07Jessie Ware?

  It's really good.

• 7:08Speaker 04

She gives you the whole thing, like rings and necklaces.

• 7:11Speaker 03

  I love the jacket.

• 7:12Jessie Ware?

Yeah, but it's such a good colour. I think you should. Oh, look at those shoes. She's got alu batons up, they are high.

• 7:18Speaker 04

They are, I know. Well, good job on sitting down.

• 7:21Jessie Ware?

  You look amazing.

• 7:22Speaker 03

Do you walk around like this all the time?

• 7:24Speaker 04

No, not at all. No, ask my daughters. No, not at all. Just tracksy bottoms and t-shirts, I suppose, yeah.

• 7:32Jessie Ware?

  Thank you for being here.

• 7:33Speaker 04

  Thanks for having me.

• 7:34Jessie Ware?

And you've brought your two gorgeous daughters along.

• 7:36Speaker 04

  I have, yeah.

• 7:37Jessie Ware?

  How old are they?

• 7:38Speaker 04

I want to say, because you've just given them both champagne, but one of them is, she's going to be 21 in January.

• 7:44Jessie Ware?

  She's a lad.

• 7:45Speaker 03

  She's a lad.

• 7:45Speaker 04

And one of them is 16.

• 7:48Jessie Ware?

  Which you're allowed.

• 7:49Speaker 04

  She's a lad. When you have a...

• 7:50Jessie Ware?

  That's fine, we're Mediterranean, it's fine.

• 7:52Speaker 04

  And it's, yeah.

• 7:53Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, front and centre.

• 7:54Speaker 03

  Are they bad sisters?

• 7:56Speaker 04

They're really good to each other's sisters, so they're good sisters. Yeah, they're really nice to each other. They love each other, they're mad about each other. And they are, I mean, less nice to me, obviously, but that's...

• 8:09Jessie Ware?

Oh, don't tell me that's going to happen, because my daughter adores me at the moment.

• 8:12Speaker 04

  No, that will happen, yeah.

• 8:14Jessie Ware?

What age should I be looking forward to that?

• 8:16Speaker 04

Well, it sort of depends, but early teens, they start to turn on you. But not, I mean, I feel like Amor hasn't really... Amor, have you turned on me?

• 8:28Speaker 03

They wouldn't still be here with you tonight if they turned on you.

• 8:32Speaker 04

No, they kind of, they turn, they, they kind of go off you quite heavily and then, and then it sort of sorts itself out and then they come back.

• 8:39Jessie Ware?

Do you, I just need to ask, do you think your mum is cool?

• 8:43Jessie Ware?

Absolutely, okay, that's great. She is cool, she is like.

• 8:47Speaker 03

  Very cool.

• 8:48Jessie Ware?

  Very cool.

• 8:48Speaker 04

  I can tell.

• 8:50Jessie Ware?

There we go. It's like family therapy.

• 8:53Speaker 04

  Coming up for the books.

• 8:54Jessie Ware?

And, and your daughters think you're cool, so I think you're doing fine.

• 8:57Speaker 04

  That's amazing.

• 8:58Jessie Ware?

Hold on a minute, what do you need, mate? Sorry, my son has just walked in. You need to go to bed, my love. Uh, it's the new one, yeah, it's in there.

• 9:07Jessie Ware?

  Right, come on, mate.

• 9:09Speaker 04

  He's cute as hell.

• 9:10Jessie Ware?

Okay, you can take the bottle there if you want some. Hold on, let me just top this up.

• 9:15Speaker 03

Yeah, top, top it up, darling.

• 9:17Jessie Ware?

You know when we started getting really into Bolly, we had Joanne Lumley on the pod.

• 9:21Speaker 04

Oh, oh my god, so she's, I'm working with her at the moment.

• 9:24Jessie Ware?

  Are you?

• 9:24Speaker 03

  How lovely is she?

• 9:25Speaker 04

Yeah, cause, cause we are the best.

• 9:26Speaker 03

  She's just so divine.

• 9:28Speaker 04

And so beautiful. So we're doing a Motherland spin off.

• 9:33Jessie Ware?

She's the mother in it, isn't she?

• 9:35Speaker 04

  So she plays Amanda's.

• 9:36Jessie Ware?

  Mum doesn't know her yet.

• 9:38Speaker 03

I don't know, I'm only second mate through the second series.

• 9:40Speaker 04

Okay, so she, I think she comes in in the second season, I can't remember, but anyway, she's amazing, it's, it's.

• 9:47Speaker 03

  Is she Amanda's mum?

• 9:48Speaker 04

  She's Amanda's mum.

• 9:49Jessie Ware?

  Can you imagine that?

• 9:50Speaker 04

So Amandaland is the spin off and it's her and Joanna Lumley playing for her mum. And Anne, Anne as, you know, who was her Amanda sidekick in Motherland.

• 10:01Speaker 03

  Irish man.

• 10:01Speaker 04

And then this whole new cast, amazing, I'm so excited for people to see it.

• 10:06Jessie Ware?

I should have done your prosecco and spag bol tonight, it's so frigging good.

• 10:10Speaker 04

  Oh, thank you.

• 10:11Speaker 03

  You're Liz, I love Liz.

• 10:14Speaker 04

No, I'm not Liz, I kind of wish I was a bit, I think I'm probably a bit of all of them.

• 10:18Jessie Ware?

A bit of all of them.

• 10:18Speaker 04

  Less Kevin.

• 10:19Speaker 03

  Less.

• 10:20Speaker 04

Yeah, not, not so much Kevin.

• 10:22Speaker 03

  He's so good at it.

• 10:23Speaker 04

  He's so amazing, isn't he?

• 10:24Speaker 03

  He's so amazing.

• 10:25Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 10:25Speaker 03

  Kevin.

• 10:26Jessie Ware?

Would you be in the next season, in Amandaland?

• 10:29Speaker 04

Oh, I'm not, I'm not in Amandaland, but, but in the, you know, if we do another season of Amandaland, maybe, cause it's just so much fun. It's so much fun watching them and now it's like sort of teenagers, you know, they've, we kind of jumped on a few years, so it's that kind of, yeah, I mean, you haven't got to that yet, but there's.

• 10:45Jessie Ware?

You're experiencing it in real life, so you've had your teenagers and that's kind of, so that's how it works, brilliant. I can't wait for that.

• 10:51Speaker 04

Yeah, I can't wait for it to start.

• 10:52Jessie Ware?

But we're here, we're here, we're talking about Bad Sisters.

• 10:54Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 10:56Jessie Ware?

The baddest of sisters. What a cast.

• 11:00Speaker 04

  Thank you.

• 11:01Jessie Ware?

  I mean.

• 11:01Speaker 04

  I'm saying thank you, but.

• 11:03Jessie Ware?

No, you must have been involved in the casting and all of it. You must have been involved in all of it. It's your baby now.

• 11:08Speaker 04

It is my baby. It really is. Some of the girls I'd worked with before and, you know, and some I'd sort of admired from afar. And, but yeah, we got really lucky. We got really, really lucky with that cast.

• 11:23Jessie Ware?

It also makes me want to go to Ireland.

• 11:25Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 11:26Jessie Ware?

So much. It's really good for the Irish tourist board.

• 11:29Speaker 04

Yeah, I think, oh, that, that's great.

• 11:31Jessie Ware?

Makes me want to do cold water swimming and I'm not that gal.

• 11:33Speaker 04

Yeah, well, none of us are. Well, actually Eve Hewson's, I wouldn't say into it, but she grew up round the corner from where the forty foot is. So she kind of, she's kind of used to doing it. But like Eva Berthistle and Sarah Green, I think, you know, would, there's a lot of things they'd rather do than get in the core. It's Baltic, like it's up. I don't know what it is about that particular spot.

• 11:58Jessie Ware?

Oh my God, it's freezing. Can we just, because I'm, I know that we're recording this when episode four has just dropped. I'm up to episode three.

• 12:07Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 12:07Jessie Ware?

Is Daryl coming back? Because I'm sorry, you've missed a fucking trip on this.

• 12:13Speaker 04

But hang on, you saw him in that three.

• 12:14Jessie Ware?

I haven't seen four. I haven't seen him in three.

• 12:16Speaker 04

  Yeah, you did.

• 12:17Jessie Ware?

  No, I fucking didn't.

• 12:18Speaker 04

He walks into the back of the church.

• 12:20Jessie Ware?

I missed that bit. I must have been answering a fucking text about Dave Planners.

• 12:24Speaker 04

  Double screener.

• 12:25Jessie Ware?

  Shit, my hand.

• 12:26Speaker 04

Yeah, he's, he walks in the back of the church and, and Becca's just like, what the hell?

• 12:30Jessie Ware?

  Did you find him?

• 12:32Speaker 04

Um, do you know what? Daryl McCormack lived round the corner from me in Hackney for the whole time I was there.

• 12:38Jessie Ware?

  And?

• 12:39Speaker 04

And I never saw him. And then when we were casting Bad Sisters, one of the, actually the lady who runs the local store, he, he lived just above her shop. And she was like, you've got to see this incredibly fit Irishman who's, who's an actor. And, and then, and then Nina Gold, who cast it, sent me through this list and he happened to be on the list. But that was the first time I'd sort of seen or heard of him.

• 13:04Jessie Ware?

And he was also in the Emma Thompson.

• 13:06Speaker 04

Emma Thompson. But that happened after.

• 13:08Jessie Ware?

  Well, well, no, he, we.

• 13:10Speaker 04

Coincided, yeah. But I hadn't, you know, I, I'd heard about that as we started casting. He's not, he's.

• 13:16Jessie Ware?

  Is he in a relationship?

• 13:17Speaker 03

  Does he like?

• 13:18Speaker 04

Oh, he is in a relationship.

• 13:19Speaker 03

  Does he like all women?

• 13:20Speaker 04

I don't know the answer to that. Um, but he has got a girlfriend. I just remembered. He told us, he came to the, um, the premiere in New York.

• 13:28Jessie Ware?

  He's so handsome.

• 13:30Speaker 04

He does actually four, there's. Get it, get in there.

• 13:33Jessie Ware?

Well, then that's what I'm gonna be doing.

• 13:35Speaker 03

  What?

• 13:36Jessie Ware?

Watching that without my husband and enjoying Daryl.

• 13:40Speaker 03

  Daryl is gorgeous.

• 13:41Jessie Ware?

I just, him and Eves. I mean, people, everyone's watched Bad Sisters. Everyone knows Eve. Eve's character is called, what's her name?

• 13:49Speaker 04

  Becca.

• 13:49Jessie Ware?

  Becca.

• 13:50Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 13:51Jessie Ware?

  And, and their chemistry together.

• 13:53Speaker 04

Their chemistry was really good, yeah, yeah.

• 13:54Jessie Ware?

It's some of the best chemistry on television. Speaking of other good chemistry, you and Rob Delaney. I, I mean, we had Rob on a few weeks ago, actually.

• 14:02Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 14:03Jessie Ware?

He is a very attractive man. We don't just object by all men on these episodes. You do, you do.

• 14:09Speaker 03

  But he is particularly handsome.

• 14:11Jessie Ware?

I was, I had a child, I had my daughter and I was living in East London and Catastrophe. What, when did Catastrophe come out?

• 14:20Speaker 04

  I know.

• 14:21Jessie Ware?

  It was like.

• 14:22Speaker 04

I lose track of everything. Time, I don't understand time anymore.

• 14:26Jessie Ware?

So I think it was around the time that I was having a child, around two thousand and sixteen, or maybe a bit earlier.

• 14:31Speaker 03

  No, it wasn't earlier.

• 14:33Jessie Ware?

Well, I was walking around the same. Yeah, because I was walking around playgrounds like you did, like kind of befend people. And I basically thought I was your character.

• 14:42Speaker 04

Isn't it the one, isn't it a really hard, hard time?

• 14:45Jessie Ware?

  I, I did.

• 14:46Speaker 04

I, I used to see like mums having picnics without me.

• 14:50Speaker 03

  I know.

• 14:50Speaker 04

I wonder how, what, where is that? How, how did they organise that? What is that WhatsApp group? But then, and, and the reason why, like, Motherland kind of

• 15:01Speaker 04

was sort of, you know, not easy to write, but like kind of had to be written is, is that once you, once you do find your tribe, you know, once you find those people, that's it, you're. It's amazing. Your life, your life changes. Everything becomes easier with your kids. And like my, the mums I met at the, at the school gates are still like my closest pals.

• 15:22Jessie Ware?

Did you ever have to ask their permission to write any particular stories in?

• 15:27Speaker 04

Yeah, quite, quite a lot. Well, not Motherland really, because most of the characters are just completely fictional. There was a few characters in, in Catastrophe that were based on people, but people didn't notice. So I didn't have to. Yeah, but definitely storylines I've, that I've wholesale taken from friends. I've, I've asked and I've sort of, you know, explained the scenes, definitely stuff in Motherland, definitely scenes in divorce. And they're, they're, they're fine. Like as long as I think you, because I used to do it without asking and that's not so good.

• 16:01Speaker 05

Did you ever get in trouble?

• 16:02Speaker 04

I, I didn't get in trouble. I had people contact me out, out from the past who found my old Hotmail email and, and go, well, you know, we used to live together in, you know, blah, blah, blah, shared accommodation. I recognized that scene from. But, but not in a, not in an antagonistic way, just in a. They should be flattered, yeah. Yeah, I, I don't know. I, I feel like maybe it wasn't in, it wasn't the right thing to do. I didn't ask permission, but now, now I do. And also it, they kind of like it, you know.

• 16:34Jessie Ware?

Let's talk about round the dinner table. Your daughters are here. What, actually, maybe you would like to come on the mic and say what's your best, your mum's best meal that she cooks? Who wants to get on the mic?

• 16:45Speaker 04

They're kind of a little bit sort of mean about my cooking, but I think they have to. I think I, I am a good cook. Yeah.

• 16:52Speaker 05

Well, you make two things really well.

• 16:53Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 16:54Speaker 05

The cauliflower head sitting on yogurt.

• 16:59Jessie Ware?

  Clearly gorgeous.

• 17:01Speaker 05

Which we said we liked once and then we have a lot, but it's great.

• 17:08Speaker 05

And salmon and rice with all the vegetables and seaweed.

• 17:12Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 17:12Speaker 05

  Seaweed, salmon and rice.

• 17:13Speaker 04

Nice. I actually make a really good roast um chicken dinner as well, but Siobhan doesn't eat chicken anymore. So, Amy, what do you think about that?

• 17:22Speaker 05

  She just rolled her eyes.

• 17:23Speaker 04

You rolled her? Oh, oh. Why? Don't speak to my daughter like that.

• 17:28Speaker 03

So, if you have one pescatarian, does that

• 17:30Speaker 04

  It's, it's

• 17:31Speaker 03

  Control the whole thing?

• 17:32Speaker 04

We, we end up just eating fish a lot, don't we? We eat fish mainly. And then on Sundays, or like if people come around for lunch, we do like a fish for Siobhan and then roast like a meat, usually chicken. Because it's easy. Roast chicken.

• 17:49Speaker 03

  Me too.

• 17:50Speaker 04

  I love all the roasts.

• 17:51Speaker 03

  Where did you grow up?

• 17:53Speaker 04

I grew up in a place called uh Ballyseas Town in County Meath in Ireland.

• 17:58Speaker 03

You know I'm Irish, don't you?

• 17:59Speaker 04

  I didn't know that.

• 18:00Speaker 03

  I've got my Irish passport.

• 18:01Speaker 04

Get the hell out of town.

• 18:03Speaker 03

  Very proud.

• 18:03Speaker 04

I'm such a big baby that I can actually feel the effects of half a glass of champagne.

• 18:08Speaker 03

  Me too, actually.

• 18:09Speaker 04

  It's terrible.

• 18:10Speaker 03

But I've been desperate for a glass of champagne.

• 18:13Speaker 04

But yeah, it's such a, it's such a delicious level. I love it too.

• 18:16Speaker 03

Me too. So you grew up in County Meath?

• 18:20Speaker 04

  County Meath, yeah.

• 18:21Speaker 03

  Yeah. Where is that?

• 18:22Speaker 04

That's just north of Dublin in southern Ireland, yeah.

• 18:25Speaker 03

How many people were in your family?

• 18:27Speaker 04

Um, so there's five brothers and sisters, including me.

• 18:30Speaker 03

  A big family.

• 18:31Speaker 04

Two brothers and, and, and three, three girls.

• 18:34Speaker 03

And what did your parents do? Did they work?

• 18:37Speaker 04

My dad um was, unfortunately, he, we lost him last year. Um, actually, this year he died on the, on the twenty seventh of December. Um, he was a turkey farmer. But he did so many things previous to that. He was, you know, he worked on the, he built, well, not single-handedly, the underground in, in, in London. He was a carpenter, he was a publican.

• 19:04Speaker 04

He was, um, yeah, he did all sorts.

• 19:07Speaker 03

So did you live in London a bit as well?

• 19:09Speaker 04

Yeah, I I was born in London.

• 19:11Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 19:11Speaker 04

My more Irish brothers and sisters won't let me and my eldest sister Maria forget.

• 19:16Speaker 03

But you don't have a Cockney accent.

• 19:17Speaker 04

No, but we did when we were little, little.

• 19:19Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 19:20Speaker 04

We moved to Ireland when I was three.

• 19:22Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 19:22Speaker 04

Um, and my eldest sister was four, Irish twins, and uh. And then we we had these little Cockney accents, because we were brought, we were um born in Hackney and then. My parents had a a pub called The White Thorn in in Bow.

• 19:39Speaker 03

Oh, my gosh, is it still there?

• 19:41Speaker 04

No, it was was knocked out, because we used, we.

• 19:44Speaker 03

  Down.

• 19:44Speaker 04

Yeah, we used to go and see it when my mum and dad would come over from Ireland, we would go and visit it.

• 19:49Speaker 03

Should have been a blue plaque.

• 19:51Speaker 04

Bloody right, and and last time, last time my mum and I went, which was young ago, actually, it was gone. And and we were a bit, it messed us up a bit, and then we went, we went to a pub nearby. And the piano that used to be the piano in our pub was in the pub um round the corner, we found it, so. There's a new, there's a new telly series in that, that is the old.

• 20:11Speaker 03

  The piano.

• 20:12Speaker 04

Well, it's a film, isn't it? It's a really depressing film that, um, you know, will touch a lot of hearts. But, yeah, Publican, so Publican's in Bow in the East End, and then when we moved to Ireland first. In County Leishan, Ireland, we had another pub called The Green Kiwi. And my dad had a kiwi tattooed on his arm, he was New Zealandian.

• 20:35Speaker 03

Oh, he was a New Zealander.

• 20:36Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 20:37Speaker 03

  So you liked lamb?

• 20:39Speaker 04

Yeah, actually, we we we we kept lambs for a while, but lambs are the reason why I stopped. Eating meat and became a vegetarian for twenty years.

• 20:49Speaker 03

  Because you loved the lamb?

• 20:50Speaker 04

Well, we had lambs and they were like, lambs are great, crack, you know. And the, our two lambs would come up to our back door and they would just sort of bang their little.

• 20:59Speaker 03

  So lambs do that.

• 21:02Speaker 04

They do if they wanna get in to the house and they would, um, we were really attached to them. And then one day I was eating a sandwich weirdly and I asked what was in it was some kind of meat. And my dad said, that's. Actually, the lambs were called chops and cutlets, which wasn't a great.

• 21:20Speaker 03

  Oh, my god.

• 21:21Speaker 04

He goes, that's, that's chops and, uh, and I, I got really upset.

• 21:26Speaker 03

  Of course you did.

• 21:27Speaker 04

And I became a vegetarian on that day and I stayed, yeah, stayed one for twenty years.

• 21:31Speaker 03

  That is fabulous, please.

• 21:34Speaker 04

He must have thought you'd gone mad. They were so fed up with me. Um, yeah, it was very annoying.

• 21:39Speaker 03

  So who did the cooking?

• 21:41Speaker 04

So my mum did almost all the cooking and was a, you know, really nice cook. And we, you know, like on Friday, we would come home and it would be fish and chips with homemade chips.

• 21:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 21:53Speaker 04

  Homemade chips.

• 21:54Speaker 03

  Homemade chips.

• 21:54Speaker 04

  The greatest.

• 21:55Speaker 03

  The greatest.

• 21:56Speaker 04

And then my dad would always do these like speciality meals. So, you know, when he did cook, he would cook something pretty fantastic, you know? Or even like he would do like American burgers and he would do, you know, line everything up on the counter. So like pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, you know.

• 22:15Speaker 03

  Like you're in a diner.

• 22:16Speaker 04

Exactly. And he used to make this, like these sort of amazing milk puddings. And, you know, curries and just like he, when he, when he cooked, he'd sort of go to town. And then as, as he and my mum, um, got older and when dad retired, he started cooking more. And he was a really, really good cook.

• 22:36Speaker 03

  Jess, that's probably ready now.

• 22:38Speaker 04

  Um.

• 22:38Speaker 03

  Did you do the sauce?

• 22:39Speaker 04

Or no, I've got it on.

• 22:40Speaker 03

I think bring it over here.

• 22:42Speaker 04

  Okay, fine.

• 22:42Speaker 03

Did you, yeah, the sauce just needs warming with a bit of dill in.

• 22:46Speaker 04

I might take off my dinner jacket for dinner because I'm getting hot.

• 22:50Jessie Ware?

  It's schwitzy in here, yeah.

• 22:55Jessie Ware?

  Mum, it looks really good.

• 22:57Speaker 04

  It does look.

• 22:57Jessie Ware?

I'm actually tempted to do it as a dinner party thing.

• 23:02Speaker 04

Do it? What's on top of the salmon?

• 23:04Jessie Ware?

What's on top of the salmon? Is it mushrooms?

• 23:06Speaker 03

There's mushrooms that are blitzed with some Bordenman cheese and some spinach. But it might need pepper and salt.

• 23:17Speaker 04

I'm a pepper fiend, so there is, yeah.

• 23:20Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 23:20Speaker 04

My dad, my dad covers everything in pepper, so much that whatever's on his plate just becomes black. So we've all taken on that. My girls as well.

• 23:33Jessie Ware?

You've always been Hackney then, when you've been in London?

• 23:35Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm. No, no.

• 23:37Jessie Ware?

  Did it?

• 23:37Speaker 04

Oh, I started off in Manor House.

• 23:40Jessie Ware?

Oh, did you go to squat raids, Sharon?

• 23:42Speaker 04

I did. I lived in a squat for like three and a half years, I'd say.

• 23:47Jessie Ware?

  How was that?

• 23:48Speaker 04

It was just like living in a flat, but...

• 23:50Jessie Ware?

  Cheaper?

• 23:51Speaker 04

  Cheaper, yeah.

• 23:52Jessie Ware?

  And noisier?

• 23:53Speaker 04

Mm-hmm. I was in a tower block. And then I moved to a squat in Camden for a really brief amount of time. And then I started renting in Camden. Then I rented in a housing cooperative in Camden for about six years. And then I moved to Stockwell, but sort of like bordered with Brixton, like more sort of Brixton. And then, and then Bermondsey.

• 24:19Jessie Ware?

  You've been everywhere.

• 24:20Speaker 04

Yeah, and then Hackney, but Hackney for the last 21 years.

• 24:26Jessie Ware?

  Hmm.

• 24:26Speaker 04

  Lot of ages.

• 24:28Jessie Ware?

  What was the food like?

• 24:29Speaker 03

  Do you need more sauce?

• 24:30Speaker 04

No, no, this was like gorgeous.

• 24:32Jessie Ware?

What was the food like in the squat?

• 24:35Speaker 04

We got food from the Krishnas all the time.

• 24:39Jessie Ware?

  Was it nice?

• 24:40Speaker 04

Really nice. There was a couple of, a couple of, so, so there were so many people in this tower block, you know, on, on the various different floors. And then we would come together and eat together. And a few of them were into, you know, Hare Krishna. And, and so obviously the Krishnas wanted more people to come on board. So they would come out to us, to the squat in the tower block and do sort of, you know... Ceremonies and and then they would feed us at the end.

• 25:14Jessie Ware?

So you had to watch the ceremony to get the grub?

• 25:16Speaker 04

Yeah, but but a few but a few of us were into it.

• 25:18Jessie Ware?

  What did you consider?

• 25:20Speaker 04

Me? No, but a few a few of them, yeah, a few a few of us, a few of the really stern ones.

• 25:28Speaker 04

So there was a lot of there was a lot of, um, you know, food that we sort of learnt to make from from the kind of food that that that they made, you know. Um, what do you call it, like sort of dry curries, you know, where you're just sort of cooking the spices and adding the veg and and potatoes, all vegetarian, everyone was either a vegetarian or a vegan. You know, rice dishes and, um, like gelobdemenz, you know, those, um, sort of very, very sweet dessert ball things that you eat out of syrup, yeah. It was all vegetarian, that's that's what we ate and we would do like, because it was sort of a communal a lot of the time,

• 26:09Speaker 04

it would just be these great big pans of like spicy vegetables.

• 26:27Speaker 00

• 27:31Jessie Ware?

Last supper, Sharon. We ask people, last supper, it would be before you're about to go to a desert island for a very long time.

• 27:38Speaker 04

  Right.

• 27:39Jessie Ware?

It would be your ideal last supper. Starter, main, dessert, drink of choice.

• 27:43Speaker 04

Okay. Starter. Um, well, I, I love, like, a really good prawn cocktail. You know, really big, juicy, chunky prawns and, and, um, great dressing and, like, really simple. Because I feel like if you have too big of a starter, you just, you're just fucking up your main.

• 28:07Speaker 03

Would you have it in the avocado or would you just have it on its own?

• 28:11Speaker 04

  Um, just on its own.

• 28:12Jessie Ware?

And where, and where is the best prawn cocktail that you've had? Can you remember?

• 28:16Speaker 04

Um, actually, the Shell Born in Dublin do a great one.

• 28:22Speaker 03

  Is that the hotel?

• 28:23Speaker 04

Yeah, mo- most, most places in Ireland do really good, um, either prawn cocktail or smoked salmon on, on brown bread. But I, I think it would be that. I think it would be either that or, or smoked salmon.

• 28:35Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 28:35Speaker 04

  Smoked salmon.

• 28:36Jessie Ware?

  On rye bread or?

• 28:37Speaker 04

  On soda bread.

• 28:38Jessie Ware?

  Soda bread.

• 28:39Speaker 04

  Yeah. Um, I think so.

• 28:42Jessie Ware?

  Drink of choice?

• 28:44Speaker 04

Um, like, would, would I get a drink to have at the start?

• 28:47Jessie Ware?

You can do whatever you want.

• 28:48Speaker 04

I'd probably have, like, um, a tequila with, um, I'd drink George Clooney's tequila.

• 28:55Jessie Ware?

  So does Jesse.

• 28:56Speaker 04

  Right?

• 28:57Jessie Ware?

  It's good.

• 28:57Speaker 04

The orangey one, not the, not the clear one.

• 29:00Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 29:00Speaker 04

So, right? And then with, with ice, loads of ice and loads of fresh, um, orange juice squeezed into it. And then a couple of slices of orange.

• 29:09Jessie Ware?

  Main?

• 29:11Speaker 04

What would the main be? It would either be the world's greatest lasagna.

• 29:18Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 29:19Speaker 04

Or, if it wasn't the world's greatest lasagna, it'd be like a beef, uh, Wellington.

• 29:25Speaker 03

Oh, so this was nearly it?

• 29:26Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah. In fact, that's what I had for my, um, wedding day.

• 29:31Jessie Ware?

  Beef Wellington?

• 29:32Speaker 04

  Beef, beef Wellington.

• 29:33Speaker 03

  Delicious.

• 29:34Speaker 04

You've got a really good beef Wellington.

• 29:37Jessie Ware?

  Pudding?

• 29:39Speaker 04

Putting up one hundred percent trifle, like without.

• 29:47Speaker 04

It's my, I make at Christmas, it's my, it's my big thing.

• 29:50Speaker 03

  Which, what, what flavour?

• 29:52Speaker 04

Um, so I do sort of like, um, a berry one, so, but I do it, it's very old school. It's not even old school, it's just not classy, I use jelly.

• 30:02Speaker 03

  No, I don't.

• 30:04Jessie Ware?

Yours is not that much classier, mum, to be honest.

• 30:07Speaker 04

But, but listen, but listen, I do, I do, so I do, I do like, you know, the sponge fingers. That all goes down, soak that in, in, in sherry. And then, um, all, all, all the fruit, all the, all the berries. And then, um, jelly, so it'd be like a strawberry or raspberry jelly, like a lot. And then, really good custard, more sherry.

• 30:32Jessie Ware?

Or do you get a shop bought?

• 30:34Speaker 04

  Um, shop bought.

• 30:35Speaker 03

  No, you, you use powder.

• 30:38Jessie Ware?

No, do you do the pot powder?

• 30:39Speaker 04

  I, I do, I do the powder.

• 30:41Jessie Ware?

  Oh, yeah, birds.

• 30:43Speaker 04

That's kind of like a cross between shop bought and homemade, isn't it? Oh, yeah. You've got to get it right.

• 30:47Speaker 03

You're not doing that some sugar.

• 30:48Jessie Ware?

  I think that's homemade, I think that's homemade.

• 30:50Speaker 04

And then, and then like just tons of cream and then roasted, um, almonds, like slithers of. Chocolate flake, it's, it's a whole thing.

• 31:01Jessie Ware?

  Is it great, girls?

• 31:02Speaker 04

  It's giant.

• 31:03Jessie Ware?

  So good.

• 31:04Speaker 04

And I used to make a different one for my dad, because he loved it sort of old school with like tins of fruit cocktail. You know, proper old school, so lots of tins of fruit cocktail on top of your spot.

• 31:14Speaker 03

So where do you get your berries from? So I.

• 31:17Speaker 04

  Just frozen, frozen berries.

• 31:18Speaker 03

That's what I do now, with sugar.

• 31:20Jessie Ware?

You used to do tinned raspberries though, I love that.

• 31:22Speaker 04

  But really, really boozy, right?

• 31:25Speaker 03

Well, I don't use booze because Alex doesn't drink, my son doesn't drink, so I don't use booze.

• 31:31Speaker 04

I do too, I do too, um.

• 31:33Speaker 03

Yeah, sometimes, yeah, and do that.

• 31:35Speaker 04

But I like, you know, where, where it goes. As you.

• 31:38Speaker 03

Yeah, but I use Swiss roll instead of sponge fingers. Because it's got a bit more raspberry in, so, yeah, raspberry Swiss.

• 31:48Speaker 04

  Good.

• 31:49Speaker 03

  Without the cream.

• 31:50Speaker 04

I might try that, but I feel like everyone would get angry, cause if you try, what if you try and do, I think I tried to do cauliflower one, one year for Christmas. Everyone was so angry. Is this the cauliflower in the, in the. No, it wasn't. It was just like, I don't know, it was some kind of slightly fancy cauliflower, but not that, not that fancy. And, uh, yeah, everyone just was really angry.

• 32:11Speaker 04

You know, even if. What, what, what would it have been instead? Well, you know, it would just be, um, Brussels sprouts, um, red cabbage. Uh huh. Um, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, um, and then all the meats.

• 32:26Speaker 03

  About cauliflower?

• 32:27Speaker 04

Yeah. Yeah, because they were like, what the hell are you doing?

• 32:30Speaker 03

  Devers?

• 32:31Speaker 04

But we would have, um, four meats.

• 32:34Speaker 03

  Four different ones?

• 32:35Speaker 04

  Four different meats.

• 32:36Speaker 03

  A ham, a lamb.

• 32:37Speaker 04

  No, no, no.

• 32:39Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 32:39Speaker 04

  Guess again.

• 32:40Speaker 03

  Ham, turkey?

• 32:41Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 32:43Speaker 03

  Beef?

• 32:43Speaker 04

Yeah, but what kind of beef?

• 32:45Speaker 03

  Beef Wellington?

• 32:46Speaker 04

No. Spice beef, like pastrami kind of style, yeah.

• 32:51Speaker 03

  Like a brisket?

• 32:52Speaker 04

Yes, like a brisket, but better, better.

• 32:55Speaker 03

Have you got a good recipe?

• 32:57Speaker 04

Um, well, we, we, my dad would just get it from a certain, um, butchers and, uh, they would do all the spicing and then you sort of, you just, you just cook it. And we would go, go to the.

• 33:06Speaker 03

  Was it slow cooked?

• 33:08Speaker 04

  Yes, slow cooked.

• 33:09Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 33:10Speaker 04

  And then, uh, goose.

• 33:12Speaker 03

  Jeez, never done goose.

• 33:14Speaker 04

So Christmas is big for you guys? Yeah, and then all the different sauces that, that go with that, you know? So like a cranberry sauce, then a bread sauce, then a. Like e- eighteen, I guess. It kind of gets bigger every year because of.

• 33:29Speaker 03

Need about eighty to eat all that.

• 33:33Speaker 04

No, but you just keep eating that for a week. So, um, we've got your dinner, we've got your dinner. Did we get your drink? We got the tequila? Yes. Are you sticking with tequila? No, I mean, I wouldn't. I mean, I'm not a psychopath. I wouldn't. No, I like it. It's kind of sexy. I just, I just mean like that would be a nice one. You know, when, when you're hovering about before the actual meal starts. Yeah. Don't you find that tequila, kind of like champagne, kind of gets you giddy rather than drunk? It's a different kind of, isn't it? It just makes you kind of giddy.

• 34:00Speaker 03

  It's great.

• 34:01Speaker 04

  So, um.

• 34:01Speaker 03

You get drunk on half a glass of champagne.

• 34:03Jessie Ware?

  You're a limelight.

• 34:04Speaker 04

Well, it's because, it's because I, I gave up for like a really good chunk of time and then I, I actually started again just after dad died, cause I thought I need to just go and drink Guinness in the pub with my family and then, and now I'm like, I, I'm a bit of a lightweight. I haven't fully gotten them.

• 34:22Speaker 03

But you don't drink a lot.

• 34:24Speaker 04

No, but when I, when I, when I drink, I drink like, I drink like an Irish, like an Irish person. Yeah. Yeah.

• 34:29Jessie Ware?

What's memorable, I, I'm gonna ask you your memorable, like nostalgic taste and you can think about that.

• 34:36Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 34:37Jessie Ware?

I, I'm, cause I was doing the dinner when you were talking about being in a pub. You must have spent a lot of time in pubs, right? Yeah, with your parents, um, being publicans.

• 34:45Speaker 04

  When I was little, yeah.

• 34:46Jessie Ware?

When you were little. And like, were there, what was the soundtrack to your growing up in a pub? What was played a lot? Cause I can imagine there were certain songs.

• 34:54Speaker 04

  Oh my god.

• 34:55Speaker 03

  Did you have a jukebox?

• 34:56Speaker 04

Definitely a jukebox in the Port Arlington place, cause I remember it. But in the place in Bow, it was the piano and that, that was it. Like they really prided themselves on this incredible pianist that they found and, and the rest of the time they just wanted like, just chat.

• 35:14Speaker 03

  Did they like live music?

• 35:16Speaker 04

Yeah, they did. I mean, it's funny, cause my mum and dad were never really, they didn't play much music in the house. So it kind of, you know, they were both so, so into it. But, um, I mean, we had a handful of records when, when I, when I was little, there was, felt like there was very little music around.

• 35:30Speaker 03

What style of music did they like?

• 35:32Speaker 04

Like my dad was a big sort of, you know, Frank Sinatra kind of.

• 35:37Speaker 03

  Crooners.

• 35:37Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah. Loved all that sort of brat, brat pack kind of thing. Rat pack, I mean, um, and mum, I don't know, I guess, um, mum would have liked more sort of like whatever we weren't listening to, you know, kind of

• 35:52Jessie Ware?

  What were you listening to?

• 35:53Speaker 04

popular culture. Um, oh, well, at what point?

• 35:56Jessie Ware?

  Okay, tweens.

• 35:59Speaker 04

Tweens. Oh, tweens. Tweens, I was absolutely, um, Duran Duran, kind of.

• 36:04Jessie Ware?

  Ah.

• 36:05Speaker 04

  Uh, new, new romantic.

• 36:07Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 36:07Speaker 04

Adam and the Ants. And then I got very, very heavily into David Bowie when I was, I guess, twelve, thirteen.

• 36:16Jessie Ware?

  Oh, okay.

• 36:16Speaker 04

And then, so then it was Bowie and, and Kate Bush and.

• 36:22Speaker 04

Yeah, they were, they were my soundtrack for a lot of my teens. And then, and then of course, like, you know, the Smiths and Joy Division.

• 36:30Jessie Ware?

You're an indie girl. You're an indie girl.

• 36:32Speaker 04

  Yeah, I mean.

• 36:32Speaker 03

  You like the Smiths?

• 36:34Speaker 04

  Oh, God.

• 36:34Speaker 03

  Are you miserable now?

• 36:36Speaker 04

I, I, I saw Johnny Marr play really recently.

• 36:40Jessie Ware?

Oh, he's lovely. We had him on the podcast. He's amazing.

• 36:43Speaker 04

But I saw that. I loved it.

• 36:44Speaker 03

  He was so lovely.

• 36:45Speaker 04

He, and I told him that I saw him play when I was um fourteen in a, in a pub in Dundalk. In County Louth in, in, in Ireland. And he absolutely remembered that tour. When it, when it all kicked off, when Morrissey said something very controversial and then they all had to sort of, you know, something with the IRA, I can't remember. But anyway.

• 37:06Speaker 03

  Didn't they?

• 37:06Speaker 04

Yeah, they had this really tricky time, sort of where they had to have proper security and stuff when they were touring around Ireland. But that was, that was when I saw them. And yeah, we, we were, we were obsessed. We, we dressed like goths, but we were, we were indie, really. Cause I don't, I never really fully got into.

• 37:24Speaker 03

Did you have dyed long black hair?

• 37:25Speaker 04

Dyed long black hair, all, all the black clothes, like vintage black, you know, very sort of like little fitted jackets and, you know, sort of very kind of glam for fifteen year old country girls. Um, but, you know, I mean, I listened to The Cure and Susie, but outside of that, I wasn't, you know, I didn't have sort of big sort of goth leanings.

• 37:47Speaker 03

When did you get back to England then?

• 37:49Speaker 04

When I was nineteen. I moved to England when I dropped out of art college in Dublin and I moved to, to London, literally to make my fortune.

• 37:58Speaker 03

Of course, and you did. Tootie, have you done stand up?

• 38:01Speaker 04

No, I, I've done live comedy, live sketch comedy. I've never, never, I wouldn't be, wouldn't be brave enough to be myself, you know, on stage.

• 38:12Jessie Ware?

I don't understand comedians. They terrify me because they're something so kind of.

• 38:16Speaker 03

Comedians. Are, are, are all stand ups themselves or do they take on a persona?

• 38:21Speaker 04

Well, I guess they, I guess they, they take on a bit of a persona, yeah. But I used to, you know, I used to, I mean, I used to go and watch stand up all the time. It was an obsession of mine. But yeah, it was never something I thought, it was never something I, I thought I'd be brave enough to do. But it's, it's weird because now I do, like I do live, I can do live TV and I do, like I interviewed Stanley Tootie at the Palladium and there was like a lot of people there and it didn't, I was, found it easy enough to be myself, but. And I like an audience, like I don't know what that says about me, but I do.

• 38:55Jessie Ware?

I just wanna actually take a moment to say This Way Up was absolutely amazing.

• 39:00Speaker 03

  It was astonishing.

• 39:01Speaker 04

Well, that was Aisling's show. I mean, we, Meriman made it, but that's, that's all Aisling.

• 39:05Jessie Ware?

You and Aisling, you're fabulous together.

• 39:07Jessie Ware?

  In it too, was amazing.

• 39:09Speaker 04

  Oh, thank you.

• 39:10Jessie Ware?

  I loved it so much.

• 39:11Speaker 04

  Yeah, she's so clever.

• 39:12Jessie Ware?

She is amazing. I have to say about Bad Sisters, I love the kitchen scenes. They always seem to be like, even when you're like shooting from the fridge, like it's

• 39:19Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 39:20Jessie Ware?

centres around that kitchen, the big discussions.

• 39:23Speaker 03

Do you not think it's done?

• 39:24Jessie Ware?

I don't know, I've never made bread without a thing.

• 39:26Speaker 03

Press it, is it spongy if you touch it?

• 39:28Jessie Ware?

  It's spongy.

• 39:29Speaker 03

Then it's done, it's done, yeah.

• 39:31Speaker 04

Yeah, I love, I love those scenes as well. They're a real bugger to shoot because, you know, usually they're a big ensemble scenes, like the Christmas one and the, the Easter one and we did a lot this season as well, but they, yeah, they, they, they take a lot of time to shoot. And anything sort of ensemble is tricky, but they're the ones, scenes I love the most. Cause you get that real feeling of like what it is to be in a big family.

• 39:55Jessie Ware?

I love it, and that house.

• 39:58Speaker 04

I know. You know, in the second season, we had to just build a new one because the first, the first one was knocked down and developed.

• 40:04Speaker 03

Oh my god, what a no.

• 40:06Speaker 04

So this is, this is why, um, Derblo, well, our director is so amazing because, um, what, what they had to do was find somewhere, a location that matched, and it was such a specific location because it was overlooking, you know, the sea, it was wild. And it was as well. So we found this, this, um, area in Wicklow, cause that house was in Hoth. And we found an area in Wicklow that sort of matched it up. And it ended up being so perfect because, um, you know, we used the whole area around and the sea and everything, but yeah, we built this house. We built a little house, half a house. It, it's only half a house, but.

• 40:45Speaker 03

Where is it now? Don't I?

• 40:48Speaker 04

  I don't know.

• 40:49Speaker 03

  Have you?

• 40:50Jessie Ware?

Do you ever take anything from?

• 40:51Speaker 04

I'd say I got blown down, maybe. No, no, no, no, I don't know where it is. It's either in a box somewhere, or it's still there.

• 41:00Speaker 03

Have you got your own house in Ireland, though?

• 41:02Speaker 04

  No, I don't.

• 41:03Speaker 03

  You need one.

• 41:05Speaker 04

Yeah, I've got, I've got, I've got a house in LA. Which was like

• 41:09Jessie Ware?

  Whereabouts?

• 41:10Speaker 04

  In Beechwood.

• 41:12Speaker 03

  Oh, how lovely.

• 41:13Jessie Ware?

  Gorgeous.

• 41:14Speaker 04

  Yeah, it's lovely.

• 41:15Jessie Ware?

I love Beechwood. Where is your first spot that you go to when you're in LA?

• 41:18Speaker 04

We go to the Beechwood Cafe and we eat a load of eggs. We hike, you know, we go on a big old hike, usually up to the, to the sign, or we go to Griffith Park. We go to Las Feliz, we go to Fred 62's.

• 41:37Speaker 03

Do you go to Clark Street Diner?

• 41:39Speaker 04

No, I don't know that one.

• 41:40Jessie Ware?

So it's just on Fairfax? The old motel, you know, the one that used to be the 101 or something?

• 41:44Speaker 04

Yes, I used to stay there. Yeah, I used to stay there. Right, so I felt a bit sad when it stopped being just a nighty diner.

• 41:50Jessie Ware?

It's the same, it's, they've kept the interiors exactly same.

• 41:53Speaker 04

Yeah, they do a really good Oreo Cookie Milkshake with peanut butter.

• 41:58Speaker 03

The food is fabulous, it's my favourite.

• 42:00Speaker 04

Where else do we go, girls? The alcove, we always go to the alcove, which is on Franklin, is it? Yeah. We also go to the Oaks, just opposite Gelson's and, and Laffy Bell and.

• 42:13Speaker 03

  I love Gelson's.

• 42:14Speaker 04

I tried to get into the Sinology Church once, they were having an open day. Because I'm fascinated.

• 42:21Speaker 03

  Are you?

• 42:21Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 42:22Jessie Ware?

And what, did they let you in?

• 42:23Speaker 04

Not, not in a way that I would be attracted to it, but just in a way that I find it so creepy.

• 42:27Speaker 03

Saffis is next door to it.

• 42:29Jessie Ware?

Yeah, did they let you, did they let you in?

• 42:31Speaker 04

No, I didn't, they wouldn't, because, and I thought I'm gonna get in here because it's an open day and it was, there was this whole thing, like I say, we welcome.

• 42:37Speaker 03

  Probably very suspicious.

• 42:38Speaker 04

I think they must have just told from my cynical chops that I was, you know.

• 42:43Speaker 03

  Darling, how much?

• 42:45Speaker 04

  Small, thank you.

• 42:46Speaker 03

  Smaller than that bit?

• 42:48Speaker 04

  No, that looks good.

• 42:49Jessie Ware?

No, but that looks a bit, give her a little bit of a crunch.

• 42:51Speaker 04

  No, that looks good.

• 42:51Jessie Ware?

  Okay, fine.

• 42:52Speaker 03

  That's the crunch, darling.

• 42:54Jessie Ware?

  It looks very sad, actually.

• 42:56Speaker 04

  Well, maybe.

• 42:56Jessie Ware?

  It's custody.

• 42:57Speaker 04

  Yeah, it looks great.

• 42:58Jessie Ware?

That's how it's supposed to be. Really, like, everything is rimbage.

• 43:03Jessie Ware?

  Sorry.

• 43:04Speaker 04

  No.

• 43:04Jessie Ware?

  Just have some more cream.

• 43:06Speaker 04

I will, I'm sitting here now.

• 43:07Jessie Ware?

Please, please, help yourself to more cream.

• 43:10Speaker 04

It's really delicious. Is that like brioche?

• 43:13Jessie Ware?

  It's panettone.

• 43:14Speaker 04

  Panettone?

• 43:15Jessie Ware?

Is this for me? Yeah. Um, what is a nostalgic taste? We've had your nostalgic kind of, um, sounds of the pub, but what's a nostalgic taste from your childhood or, or, or, or somewhere?

• 43:28Speaker 04

I would say like, my mum used to make, um, like, uh, scones. She would use like, um, treacle and makes, the treacle and raisin kind of scones. So, any, any sort of home baked

• 43:43Speaker 04

scone type, bun type thing feels really nostalgic. I mean, ice creams, like there's very specific ice creams that you get in New Orleans that you can't get anywhere else. So there's, uh, brunch. The girls will back me up on this. One of the great, one of the greatest ice creams ever invented.

• 44:00Jessie Ware?

  What is it?

• 44:01Speaker 04

So it's like, it's like a vanilla and strawberry ice cream and it's covered in, in, in sort of crumbs, like biscuit crumbs that are also strawberry and, and vanilla.

• 44:09Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 44:10Speaker 04

  Um, it's amazing. And then.

• 44:12Jessie Ware?

Who makes it? Which make is it?

• 44:14Speaker 04

  Hmm.

• 44:14Jessie Ware?

  I'm Googling it.

• 44:15Speaker 04

  I don't know.

• 44:16Jessie Ware?

Walls, maybe? I can't remember. And you can't get it here.

• 44:19Speaker 04

No, you cannot get it here. And then there's a loop, loop de loop, which is sort of like a lime and chocolate ice lolly. So nostalgic.

• 44:29Jessie Ware?

  Oh, that does look good.

• 44:30Speaker 04

  It's really good.

• 44:32Jessie Ware?

  Brunch.

• 44:32Speaker 04

It's even better than that, guys.

• 44:34Jessie Ware?

It's even better than that picture.

• 44:37Speaker 04

  Brunch.

• 44:37Jessie Ware?

Looks great. So it's kind of like a feast.

• 44:41Speaker 04

It's not even remotely like a feast.

• 44:43Jessie Ware?

A kind of like a feast that was a strawberry centre.

• 44:45Speaker 04

Feasts have got a big log of horrible chocolate in the middle of it.

• 44:49Jessie Ware?

I disagree. I really like a feast. Do you eat Tatos, isn't that?

• 44:52Speaker 04

And Tatos, yeah. Tatos is nostalgic. Um, and there was this, there was this one ice cream that they, you don't, they don't do anymore. And I think it's a tragedy called a wibbly wobbly wonder.

• 45:03Jessie Ware?

You have to Google that one. A wibbly wobbly.

• 45:04Speaker 04

Yeah, it was, it was sort of like a lime, uh, no, like a lemon jelly and in a, in a, I could, it's really hard to explain. It's like an ice pot.

• 45:14Jessie Ware?

  Called a jiggly pot?

• 45:15Speaker 04

  No, a wibbly, wobbly.

• 45:19Speaker 03

  Any of those ones?

• 45:20Speaker 04

  Wibbly wobbly wonder, give me.

• 45:22Speaker 03

  Wibbly wobbly.

• 45:23Speaker 04

Oh, and an ice burger. Can you get iceburgers here then?

• 45:25Speaker 03

  No.

• 45:26Jessie Ware?

  It's literally.

• 45:27Speaker 03

  Dammit.

• 45:28Jessie Ware?

  Have you ever had a?

• 45:29Speaker 04

Oh, jiggly. Oh, well, it looked very like a jiggy.

• 45:31Jessie Ware?

So it is like a jiggly pop. Yeah, so it's a jiggly pop.

• 45:34Speaker 04

Because it did have a jiggly sort of thing going on. Because it was.

• 45:37Jessie Ware?

  Sounds very, um, Alec.

• 45:39Speaker 03

Jessie, I bet she's never had a torpede.

• 45:41Jessie Ware?

  Dropping a banana.

• 45:42Speaker 03

  A torpedo, darling.

• 45:45Jessie Ware?

  What are you talking about?

• 45:46Speaker 03

The lolly goes into the ice cream.

• 45:48Jessie Ware?

This is completely X rated. Stop it.

• 45:50Speaker 03

The lolly goes into the ice cream.

• 45:52Jessie Ware?

Just the lolly down in the ice cream, mother.

• 45:54Speaker 04

There it is. Wibbly wobbly wonder. They don't do it anymore. I think maybe it was.

• 45:59Jessie Ware?

It's not, it's not giving. It's not giving as much as the brunch.

• 46:02Speaker 04

Well, that's a real nostalgic taste, but that's all sweet stuff. Why, I, um, oh, um, Arlen do really, really good sausages. God knows what's in there because it doesn't taste like meat.

• 46:15Speaker 03

  It probably isn't.

• 46:17Speaker 04

They are the best. My mum and my dad would do these great fry-ups and like the sound, walking into a kitchen with the sound of a radio playing, like talk radio and the smell of sausages and rations and like black pudding and all that kind of thing. That's incredibly nostalgic to me.

• 46:36Speaker 03

  With soda bread.

• 46:37Speaker 04

Soda bread or just toast, like the smell of toast.

• 46:40Speaker 03

  Potato cakes.

• 46:41Speaker 04

  Potato cakes.

• 46:42Speaker 03

  I love it.

• 46:43Speaker 04

Potato, um, you know, the ones that are kind of.

• 46:45Speaker 03

  Potato falls.

• 46:46Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 46:47Speaker 03

  I love this.

• 46:48Speaker 04

  Gorgeous.

• 46:49Speaker 03

  They're great.

• 46:50Jessie Ware?

  Altered butter.

• 46:50Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 46:52Jessie Ware?

They're really nice. Sharon Horgan, it's been an absolute pleasure having you on.

• 46:56Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:56Jessie Ware?

You are prolific. You are incredibly impressive. Your daughters are gorgeous.

• 47:01Speaker 04

  Yeah, I'm lucky.

• 47:02Jessie Ware?

And I can't wait to see more of your creations on screen.

• 47:05Speaker 04

  Thanks, honey.

• 47:05Jessie Ware?

And good luck with the rest of Bath Sisters. The finale is on Christmas Day.

• 47:10Speaker 04

It's actually the day before Christmas Day.

• 47:11Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 47:12Speaker 04

I think it's called Christmas Eve. Um, the food was delicious. Thank you for having me.

• 47:16Jessie Ware?

  Oh, good pleasure.

• 47:17Speaker 04

I really, really, really enjoyed it and I'm a really small bit pissed.

• 47:20Jessie Ware?

  Great. I love that.

• 47:21Speaker 03

I don't see it at all.

• 47:23Jessie Ware?

  You're really holding it down.

• 47:24Speaker 04

  Yeah. Thank you.

• 47:41Jessie Ware?

Thank you so much to Sharon Horgan for coming over. I love her daughters, they're so sweet. And she looked incredibly glamorous. Loved the outfit.

• 47:50Speaker 03

The outfit was fab, her hair was fab.

• 47:52Jessie Ware?

And she gave us brilliant stories about the pub and the squat.

• 47:58Speaker 03

  Where is that piano?

• 47:59Jessie Ware?

I know, where is the... We should do a search party for that piano. Somebody will have the piano.

• 48:04Speaker 03

She said it was in a pub next door, yeah.

• 48:07Jessie Ware?

Have you still got your false eyelashes on, Mum?

• 48:09Speaker 03

No, these are from using RapidLash.

• 48:11Jessie Ware?

  Wow, Mum.

• 48:12Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 48:13Jessie Ware?

  That is not an ad.

• 48:14Speaker 03

No, honestly, it's from using RapidLash.

• 48:17Jessie Ware?

Come on, Len. Thank you Sharon Horgan for coming by on a Friday night and sharing some Bollinger with us. Thank you to my children who are still awake and it is past nine o'clock.

• 48:31Jessie Ware?

Do you want to do the outro, little man? What are you gonna say? Bye.

• 48:37Jessie Ware?

  We'll see you next week.

• 48:52Speaker 00
