I have used Off the Record successfully a bunch of times and so have a bunch of you guys, based on the number of emails I get about it. So, one more time, offtherecord.com/tst. That's offtherecord.com/tst. Gets you 10% off all legal services that you book through Off the Record. Do it. On this episode, we are back from our 4th of July break. I have been riding the Can-Am Pulse electric motorcycle and I've been reading Adrian Newey's book, How to Build a Car. Plus Zach and I review some crash footage of the Nürburgring, see if we can assign some

• 1:27Matt Farah?

blame and talk about scooters a lot. Plus, a bunch of questions from our lovely Patreon over at patreon.com/thesmokingtirepodcast. Let's do it. Without the, like, without it being like a chant, when it's spoken, it loses all of its power. I need it to be like, has to be like, done like the commercial.

• 1:52Speaker 01

  We are farmers, right.

• 1:54Matt Farah?

I give it a free ad, I'm paying over here.

• 1:56Speaker 01

Look, you remember all the designers of cars. I'll remember the jingles and we got it all covered.

• 2:01Matt Farah?

We, wall-to-wall mini-tunes. I believe you called them commercials.

• 2:04Speaker 01

  What is that from?

• 2:05Matt Farah?

Demolition Man. In the future, Demolition Man. Commercial jingles are the only music. That's music.

• 2:13Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 2:14Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:14Speaker 01

  I should watch it again.

• 2:16Matt Farah?

By the way, I don't know how many music videos you've seen recently, but the two are rapidly merging.

• 2:22Speaker 01

Every time I hear like a party song, I remember when Little John came out with Shots Shots and how bars would respond. Like people at bars would go buy shots and I was like, and now if I hear that kind of attitude in a song, I go, this is, is this paid for by Big Liquor to just get people to go to the bar?

• 2:38Matt Farah?

I mean, I, I can't say definitively that there was like no product placement in the Nothing But A G-Fang video, for instance. Or the Smells Like Teen Spirit video, but like I'm pretty sure Kurt's Flannel and Dre's Low Rider were not sponsored in those videos.

• 2:58Speaker 01

Well, those were new genres, so I bet companies were very cautious at first and now.

• 3:03Matt Farah?

But was there, okay, but like, let's call it the greatest hair metal video of all time.

• 3:11Speaker 01

Was Pepsi in Bon Jovi is what we're asking, I think.

• 3:14Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 3:14Speaker 01

Did he have a video where he's like, oh, and it's labeled out and he sips the Coca-Cola?

• 3:18Matt Farah?

He, like, he might have done a commercial, but it never would have been in the video.

• 3:22Speaker 01

Right, no, I know what you're saying.

• 3:22Matt Farah?

Like, right now, I think, didn't I, didn't we talk on a recent show about the four seconds of non-continuous product placement? Uh, yeah.

• 3:31Speaker 01

Was product placement in 80's music videos?

• 3:35Matt Farah?

I'm sure there's an example of it somewhere, but it, it, it's gotta be much, much less.

• 3:41Speaker 01

Let's see, well, this random website, who knows if they're right, says it goes back to the early 80's, but it's definitely accelerated.

• 3:48Matt Farah?

Anyway, hi, everybody. Welcome into the show after the 4th of July. Zach, Zach went to Colorado, family time. I, I stayed here, wife time, uh, didn't do much. 4th of July was fabulously mellow in Los Angeles. Uh, the number of fireworks were substantially reduced from last year, which was, last year was.

• 4:17Matt Farah?

Fucking a war zone. This I attribute it to to two things. I think one. Maybe wildfire awareness.

• 4:25Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 4:25Matt Farah?

Maybe people were like, oh, remember what just happened?

• 4:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:28Matt Farah?

  Like, mm, better not.

• 4:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:29Matt Farah?

Cause there was lots of fireworks, but a substantial drop in mortars.

• 4:33Speaker 01

  Right.

• 4:33Matt Farah?

  So I think.

• 4:34Speaker 01

They're also more expensive. My barber.

• 4:36Matt Farah?

  Oh.

• 4:37Speaker 01

I was talking to him about it. I don't know if it's that, but he said a mortar used to be a hundred and fifty bucks and him and his brother would like. His two brothers, they'd share, they'd all throw in fifty and they'd get one big mortar. And he's like, now they're three hundred. It's all black market for in Los Angeles, you know, for people listening.

• 4:53Matt Farah?

Someone has a shrinkflation story about fireworks, please.

• 4:56Speaker 01

I guess I I inflation tariff danger. I don't know what it is, but they've doubled in price.

• 5:01Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 5:01Speaker 01

Over time and so maybe that's hurting people.

• 5:03Matt Farah?

I mean, the kids that make them charge more now.

• 5:08Speaker 01

I think a lot of them are made. Uh, well, there's a lot of US firework companies and if you if you ever go on Google Earth and look at their facility. It's a big building surrounded by a huge berm.

• 5:18Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 5:18Speaker 01

  Just in case. Yeah.

• 5:20Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 5:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 5:21Matt Farah?

Um. A hundred and fifty to three hundred for um per shell?

• 5:25Speaker 01

Yeah, he said per mortars, three hundred bucks.

• 5:27Matt Farah?

I haven't bought mortars in. Fifteen years, but there were nothing like that.

• 5:32Speaker 01

These were, I think these are the big ones, he's saying. These aren't the little like boom, this is.

• 5:37Matt Farah?

No, well, I mean, the ones I was buying back in the day had probably, you know, a two inch tube. Is that worth, are you talking about a, are you talking about a four, six inch?

• 5:45Speaker 01

He didn't whip it out, but I, he was inferring that it was the big professional stuff that shakes the ground.

• 5:51Matt Farah?

Uh, okay, well, yeah, there was a lot less of those. I think wildfire awareness and I think. I think possibly. The Hispanic population was keeping a lower profile than normal and not. Lighting off a bunch of fireworks in the neighborhood as they may have done in the past.

• 6:09Speaker 01

  I don't know, maybe.

• 6:10Matt Farah?

  That's a guess.

• 6:10Speaker 01

  I wouldn't, yeah.

• 6:11Matt Farah?

But the city was pretty empty. Like, traffic was delightful.

• 6:15Speaker 01

Denver was going off, because we, I was at a Red Rocks show during 4th of July and our seats were high enough you could see beyond the stage to downtown and it was, it looked like a smaller version of LA.

• 6:25Matt Farah?

Wow. That must be, what a nice day to see a show at a theater if that's your like, that's an extra special background.

• 6:32Speaker 01

They planned the viewpoint and it was perfectly done.

• 6:34Matt Farah?

And it was like Blues Traveler?

• 6:36Speaker 01

It was Spin Doctors, then Gin Blossoms, then Blues Traveler.

• 6:40Matt Farah?

  Nice.

• 6:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:42Matt Farah?

Good, who was, did anyone still have it?

• 6:44Speaker 01

Uh, I, I think Spin Doctors sounded exactly like they do on the album and their lead singer is like friendly, charismatic, funny dude.

• 6:51Matt Farah?

Uh, what the fuck is that guy's name?

• 6:53Speaker 01

  Chris Baron.

• 6:54Matt Farah?

Yes, that guy was like great on Twitter when Twitter was fun.

• 6:58Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 6:59Matt Farah?

When Twitter was fun, that dude's Twitter ruled. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 7:02Speaker 01

Um, he does, he, he was good. Gin Blossoms is not really my sound, but I also think their bassist might have been unplugged by accident or the sound mix just, it, it, all, all their guitars and the guy's voice are very high pitched. Like, it's kinda tinny.

• 7:16Matt Farah?

It is a high, it's a high pitched.

• 7:18Speaker 01

And I couldn't hear the bass, that might have been part of it, and I texted Christian James Hand later and I was like, what do you think of the Gin Blossoms? Cause I-

• 7:23Matt Farah?

  He likes the Gin Blossoms.

• 7:24Speaker 01

He said their first album was near perfect.

• 7:25Matt Farah?

He and I are very pro New Miserable Experience. New Miserable Experience is an exceptional album.

• 7:31Speaker 01

I think I need to listen to the album mix and maybe I'll come around on it.

• 7:35Matt Farah?

I mean, it's of a time. If you don't like that type of music, you're not gonna start liking it now.

• 7:41Speaker 01

  True.

• 7:42Matt Farah?

But it is a really good album that if you do like that kind of music, it's a start to finish record. For a band's first record, it's amazing.

• 7:49Speaker 01

  That shit was everywhere too.

• 7:50Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 7:51Speaker 01

They were big famous. And then, and Blues Traveler, uh, were good when they were good, but I think, I texted you, I think John Popper had some health issues and like literally, he had a health issue a few months ago, he, and then on stage he thanked the local hospital and then he, he kept alluding to something, he's like, we barely made it here today, I wanna thank doctors and the lawyers and everybody, like the team that came together to make it happen and everyone's like, what happened? And he won't tell us.

• 8:14Matt Farah?

  What's the thing?

• 8:15Speaker 01

So there was a big thing and, you know, I get it, you don't wanna go into it, but something happened that definitely impacted his health and his ability to like perform consecutive songs, so.

• 8:24Matt Farah?

  Hook is-

• 8:25Speaker 01

  Played that last-

• 8:26Matt Farah?

Possibly- The funniest and best rock song ever written.

• 8:31Speaker 01

  It is. It's trolling.

• 8:32Matt Farah?

Lyri- lyrically, I think possibly the best rock song ever written. And if you don't know, go ask somebody.

• 8:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 8:40Matt Farah?

That song is so fucking good. Uh, we, when Christian and I were doing, um, I think he has. Christian has an ins- uh, a breakdown of it that exists somewhere. That probably can't be shared for legal reasons. And he and I did one in the studio during covid on Instagram. And it was so fun. Hook is such a fucking perfect song. I hope John Popper is okay.

• 9:09Speaker 01

  Yeah, me too.

• 9:10Matt Farah?

  Um.

• 9:11Speaker 01

This is, this is the first date of they're doing, they're all touring together for a while.

• 9:14Matt Farah?

So this is the beginning. Does it have a cheeky name of a festival?

• 9:19Speaker 01

  Uh, the middle age?

• 9:21Matt Farah?

Who played, who played first and who played last? And is that, is that gonna be consistent?

• 9:26Speaker 01

Been Doctors, Jim Blossoms, then Blues Traveler.

• 9:28Matt Farah?

Do you think it'll be that every night? You think they'll rotate?

• 9:30Speaker 01

I don't know, cause Blues Traveler, I guess, has played Red Rocks on 4th of July for like 20 years.

• 9:34Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 9:34Speaker 01

So that, that's their headline show, but as they tour, maybe they'll rotate. I don't know. Um.

• 9:39Matt Farah?

  Copy.

• 9:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:41Matt Farah?

Right on. Uh, well, over the weekend, I, uh, I did two things, really. It was, it was pretty, pretty slow and mellow, which was great. Uh, I, I read a bunch. I finished Adrian Newey's How to Build a Car. Which I read like the first few chapters of like a year ago. And then it's a big, thick, heavy, it's like a textbook. It isn't, but it feels like one in your hands. And I went on some trip and I was like, I'm not carrying this to Europe, like, and I just forgot about it. So I finished that, which is an amazing book and everyone should read it. You should read it.

• 10:12Speaker 01

  I'll borrow it, yeah.

• 10:13Matt Farah?

Um, and it's, you don't have to understand much about engineering. Uh, to like it, although it helps if you do understand some like fairly basic engineering concepts. And it's really not, like, it's called How to Build a Car. It's his autobiography up until about, I don't know, the year, like maybe 2018 or 2019.

• 10:35Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 10:35Matt Farah?

Um, and so obviously some things have happened since then, so it's not complete. But, uh, it's, it's each chapter.

• 10:45Matt Farah?

It's like how to build a whatever the car was he was building during the period of this of his life.

• 10:53Speaker 01

  Got it.

• 10:54Matt Farah?

And it's a pretty cool way to like categorize your whole life because it's like here's the challenges I was having at work. And like here's how those challenges at work like rolled into my like personal life also. And like they always did like everything in his personal life was like kind of like this reflection of like what was happening at work.

• 11:15Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 11:16Matt Farah?

And so, you know, each chapter, it's how to build a, you know, the McLaren, whatever this, how to build a Williams FW this, how to build this. So it's a great book.

• 11:26Speaker 01

Got it. He joined Red Bull in oh six.

• 11:28Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 11:28Speaker 01

So it's it's like half or more than half of his, it covers more than half of his Red Bull time as well.

• 11:33Matt Farah?

Oh, yeah. It covers like almost all of the Red Bull time up until, I mean, I think, I mean, it's, yeah.

• 11:39Speaker 01

  Cool.

• 11:40Matt Farah?

I think it's it's still, it holds up even though it was written a few years ago. Uh, definitely recommend that. Um, and I wrote that thing, the Can-Am Pulse. So.

• 11:53Speaker 01

We talked a little bit about it last show.

• 11:55Matt Farah?

  Briefly.

• 11:55Speaker 01

Briefly. So how has your extended time been?

• 11:58Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 12:01Speaker 01

Could you make it to Malibu and back?

• 12:03Matt Farah?

Yes, I could. Now, uh, it's the, okay, I made it when I left the house, full charge. I, it said forty-eight miles to empty indicated on the gauge. Um, the funny thing about this is they advertise this as a one hundred mile range. So already, you know, I guess, starting because I'm fat, right? So the the problem with electric motorcycles, specifically electric motorcycles versus electric cars or any other thing, is the weight, size and shape of the rider matters so much in terms of aerodynamic efficiency.

• 12:46Matt Farah?

So if you could get a hundred miles out of this thing at the very perfect speed, which I think I found. The most efficient speed, if you had the most efficient rider in the most efficient clothing, you know, full leathers and like a

• 13:02Speaker 01

A jockey, you need a jockey.

• 13:03Matt Farah?

Yes, you have a jockey. I think it is possible to get this thing to go 100 miles.

• 13:07Speaker 01

I wish I knew this, but if you, let's say the jockey is 130 pounds.

• 13:11Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 13:12Speaker 01

If you double the weight of the rider, do you cut the range in half? Or like, is that the mathematical formula?

• 13:19Matt Farah?

Guys, we gotta take a quick break for Rula. I go to therapy every week, right? That's what Rula is. Rula is about therapy. This is gonna be an ad about therapy. And as you're gonna hear in this podcast later, I talk about having a panic attack while driving, again. And so, therapy over the last 20 years has been incredibly helpful for me, right? And the problems with therapy still exist, particularly if you don't have a therapist and need to find a new one. And now, there's all these online therapy places. The problem with them is that most won't take your insurance. And I know this because my in-person therapist moved to remote,

• 14:01Matt Farah?

and I now do it over Zoom, and they stopped taking insurance because of it. But now, there is Rula. Rula is here. They do things differently. They partner with over 100 insurance plans, making the average copay just 15 bucks per session. Real therapy from licensed professionals at a price that actually makes sense. Think about it. You use your insurance benefits to maintain your physical health. Why wouldn't you do the same for your mental health? And Rula isn't just affordable. The experience is tailored around you. Other online therapy platforms might match you with the first available provider, whether or not they're the right fit. Rula considers your goals, preferences, and background

• 14:45Matt Farah?

to provide you a curated list of licensed in-network therapists who are actually aligned with what you need. Because they know that finding the right therapist can make all the difference. There's no waiting lists, no frustrating back and forth. Rula makes it easy to find a mental health provider who's accepting new patients. And appointments are available as soon as tomorrow. Plus, Rula sticks with you throughout your journey, checking in to make sure that your care is helping you move forward. So go to rula.com/tire to get started today. And support is also coming in hot today from Quince. Uh, look at me, I don't chase trends. I'm about stuff that fits right, feels good and lasts. That's why, uh, my jeans were expensive, but I buy them every five years. And you can tell, uh, by watching our podcast on video, as does my wardrobe. And that's why I am loving this Quince. The lightweight layers and high-quality staples have become everyday essentials. Quince just, I, I just got it. It came in the other day. This corduroy jacket, I'm telling you, mark my words, it fits so nice.

• 16:10Matt Farah?

You are going to be seeing me wearing it, uh, on repeat every episode this fall. Uh, they've got breathable flow knit polos, crisp cotton shirts and lightweight pants that somehow work for weekend hangs and dressed up dinners. And the best part is everything about Quince is half the cost of similar brands. By working directly with top artisans and cutting out the middlemen, Quince gives you luxury pieces without the markups. Quince only works with factories that use safe, ethical and responsible manufacturing practices and premium fabrics and finishes. And I'm telling you, again, the corduroy jacket and the linen shirt they sent me, both feel awesome.

• 16:54Matt Farah?

And if they were like twice the price on Abbott Kinney in Venice, I would not have been surprised. It's so comfortable. It's just too hot. I actually picked it up in my closet today and then I went, "Yeah, you know what? It's gonna be 80 degrees. I probably don't need to wear this jacket today." So stick to the staples that last with elevated essentials from Quince. Go to quince.com/tire for free shipping on your order and 365 day returns. That's Q-U-I-N-C-E dot com slash tire. Free shipping, 365 day returns. Quince.com slash tire. And now, back to the show.

• 17:37Matt Farah?

I don't know, and there was nothing on the bike to indicate that it has some kind of a weight sensor on it.

• 17:44Speaker 01

No, no, just like, I'm wondering if someone's listening, put in the comments, like, physics-wise, if you double the weight of the cargo on this motorcycle, and it depends on the efficiency of the motorcycle and the tires and all that shit, but it seems like...

• 17:56Matt Farah?

So when you're accelerating, the weight matters. When you're going at sustained speed, the aerodynamics matter more than the weight. So, it depends on, the answer to your question lies in what kind of riding are you doing? So, so I, anyway, here's the story. I woke up with 48 miles on a full charge, okay? Indicated. From my house to the country mart is 22 miles, 22.0, exactly.

• 18:25Matt Farah?

And as I, it's about a mile or so from my house to the highway. It's, you know, I don't want to be too specific, but it's like between 8 and 10 miles on the highway, and the remainder of it is on the Pacific Coast Highway, which as of right now is limited and heavily enforced at a 35 mile an hour speed limit. And heavily enforced. I must have seen 25 CHPs out there. Now, they will let you get away with 40. Especially if you're on a silent motorcycle. Um, and you smile and you wave forty seems acceptable, but there's other places, you know. It's actually, it really makes you realize. Cause the, the, the full lanes are open, but there's some of the shoulders are closed.

• 19:10Matt Farah?

Obviously there's everyone staring at the burned out structures because they're tourists and whatever. Um, but it really, it really blows up any arguments that you really have to go faster on PCH. Cause at a really constant thirty-five, like it's takes the same amount of time. Um, so once you get to PCH, you're holding thirty-five, forty. So on the gauge cluster, which if you click over a couple of, I think they'll vary. Second to last slide on the, on this Instagram here. Oh, I, that's a different, um. That's not the actual screen you see while riding. That's a screen I just pulled up to show. Uh, the screen you're, uh, while riding on the right side of it shows a, uh, miles per kilowatt hour.

• 19:55Matt Farah?

So this thing has an eight point nine kilowatt hour battery and it weighs three hundred and forty pounds. And I am at a svelte for me, two hundred and sixty pounds. Um, so at riding around town, I'm seeing like. Five miles to kilowatt hours, which means like forty-five mile range. Which is how I had been riding the bike around LA light to light.

• 20:24Speaker 01

  Right.

• 20:25Matt Farah?

When I get to the highway.

• 20:28Matt Farah?

  I'm seeing like.

• 20:31Matt Farah?

Between five and seven. So like, okay, maybe. Uh, and then on the, uh, on PCH at like thirty-five to forty, pretty constant. I'm seeing like ten.

• 20:45Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 20:45Matt Farah?

Right? So if, if, if I were somehow able to just pull out of my driveway. And go thirty-five miles an hour exactly. I could probably get this thing to like eighty-five miles.

• 20:59Speaker 01

Right. Okay. So that's the, that's the magic speed is before arrow really comes into play.

• 21:03Matt Farah?

  Yes.

• 21:04Speaker 01

  But.

• 21:04Matt Farah?

But above where your weight inhibits your acceleration from a dick.

• 21:08Speaker 01

And it's just, it's just less efficient at low speed. Okay. That's interesting that, I wonder if that's how they calculate these things.

• 21:14Matt Farah?

I mean, they, they, I don't know how the EPA, if, cause, cause I don't think motorcycles have fuel efficiency ratings. They certainly have, most don't have any kind of emissions controls really at all. So I don't know if there's a standard, it's just on their website, it just says range whatever, a hundred miles. So, okay, so that's the range bit. So I was able to get to, and if you show that screen, that last screen on Instagram there, is, is when I plugged it in when I got back to my house. So when I got back to my house after riding forty-four miles on a couple miles of surface streets,

• 21:57Matt Farah?

about, and then about, you know, forty percent high, twenty percent surface street, forty percent highway, forty percent PCH, I ended up at twenty-five percent battery with fourteen miles remaining. So that means in theory I could get sixty-six miles riding like that.

• 22:14Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 22:15Matt Farah?

  Which is not a hundred.

• 22:18Matt Farah?

And, and, and I certainly wasn't riding in a particularly sporty manner. I never exceeded seventy-five on the highway. And I really was not goosing it, except for maybe once or twice. So, you know, it's, it's, it's,

• 22:37Matt Farah?

it's great for like running around short distances, right? So it rides really nicely, actually. It feels lighter than three hundred and forty pounds would suggest. I, I was surprised when I saw that number, I would have thought it was something that started with a two. It has this really cool feature where you twist the throttle forward away from you, which applies regen in, as a brake.

• 23:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:02Matt Farah?

Like it has, it has a, a three setting like auto regen. So when you lift the throttle, no, one, low or high, right? But then it's like extra regen if you twist the throttle forward, which does line up with your inertia when you're braking. But if you use that as like your brakes, you can extend the range, you know, meaningfully in the city.

• 23:25Speaker 01

  I think that's very cool.

• 23:26Matt Farah?

I think that's a fun use of electricity.

• 23:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:29Matt Farah?

And, and just, the suspension isn't like... Super sporty, but it but it's firm. It's it's great. I think I think for for running around locally, it's fun. You'd have you get the I hope they have a good cargo box option because um it would actually. After a couple of days riding it, I was like, oh, I would probably swap the Vespa for this. I could get as far as I need to go. And then I looked up the price. And it's like thirteen thousand five hundred dollars.

• 24:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 24:01Matt Farah?

And the problem is, I keep trying these electric things. And I keep going. Oh, these things are these things would be great in the city. But the value proposition is just never there. Not it's never even close.

• 24:15Speaker 01

That's a lot of money. You can get a lot of motorcycle. You can get a lot of new motorcycle for that money, right? And then if you get into the used market, even a little bit like.

• 24:24Matt Farah?

Dude, you can get a monster for.

• 24:26Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 24:26Matt Farah?

Within a thousand dollars of uh excuse me, a monster within a thousand dollars cheaper than this.

• 24:32Speaker 01

Yeah, so that's what I'm saying. You can get. So much of our our complaints with new cars is like, oh, the sound goes away because the engine is getting smaller, but like you can get a Ducati, which sounds amazing, I think. Like you can get a lot of different musical notes and have that experience and it costs you less money and the gas is so cheap.

• 24:48Matt Farah?

With the problem with electric motorcycles is that. Even the highest performance electric or gas motorcycles are still very efficient. And they're not only very efficient in in fuel economy, they're very efficient in performance. Uh they're very they're they're assuming you're not worried about the safety aspect of a motorcycle versus a car. The amount of performance, the amount of efficiency and the amount of practicality you get out of any gas powered motorcycle. Is absurdly good compared to any gas powered car. And motorcycles are cheap. Great motorcycles are cheap.

• 25:27Matt Farah?

Um and so and if you're talking about urban practicality, my Vespa three hundred smokes everything. Everything. Two cargo boxes, seventy miles a gallon, highway speeds, ABS traction control, uh water cooled engine, USB ports. Um dude.

• 25:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:47Matt Farah?

My Vespa is gonna cost me over the life of it. I guarantee my Vespa cost me less than a thousand dollars.

• 25:53Speaker 01

  Ducati hypermotard starts at thirteen.

• 25:56Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 25:56Speaker 01

You know, and choose your upright sitting, you know, non-race replica motorcycle and they're all around that price.

• 26:03Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 26:03Speaker 01

And the range is much further, yeah.

• 26:05Matt Farah?

Um, it's, it's, and it, um, it's a bummer because, um, what sucks is it's, the electric motorcycles are really fun. Like, if, if, if, if, uh, if my Vespa is like, you know, flying a little Piper Cub airplane and a, and a Ducati is like flying a fighter jet, this is like flying a glider. It's, it's just this, like, that's rad.

• 26:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 26:33Matt Farah?

And being able to do something different with the electricity, with the invert, uh, uh, the regen controller on the throttle, like, that's really fun. That big, that big display that can do full carplay. So like, that display, I didn't, I didn't do it because I don't, didn't give a shit enough. But like, you can make a full, like, Waze or display on that, which is pretty helpful while, while driving.

• 26:58Speaker 01

Did you ride it at night at all?

• 27:00Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 27:00Speaker 01

Was the display at all distracting or bright?

• 27:03Matt Farah?

  No, it flips.

• 27:03Speaker 01

  Oh, okay.

• 27:04Matt Farah?

Yeah, it's, I mean, it's still a black display, but it's, it's pretty, it, the black is pretty black.

• 27:10Speaker 01

  Cool.

• 27:10Matt Farah?

And I didn't find it to be problematic.

• 27:12Speaker 01

For people listening, it's wide. I mean, it's like, what is it, seven inch wide screen?

• 27:15Matt Farah?

Yeah, it's like an iPad mini, basically.

• 27:18Speaker 01

That screen looks almost as big as the one on like the Mazda CX-50 or, you know, Mazda has like those narrow screens on the top of the dash, it's like that.

• 27:24Matt Farah?

Yeah. Um, but honestly, I find the overall experience of riding it to be extremely pleasant. Like, if there was, you know, not, not in, not in this administration, but if there was like tax, you know, tax credits,

• 27:43Matt Farah?

twenty-five hundred, three grand, if this thing was like eighty-nine, eighty-nine ninety-nine or something like that, you know, and the dealer made you like a little, little bit on the back end, you go, you walk out the door for eight grand, I'm in. I'm totally in. Cause this thing rips. Like, it, it does zero to sixty in under four seconds, for sure. It will do wheelies. Absolutely will do wheelies. It go it it cruises very comfortably at eighty-five miles an hour. It's clearly electronically limited to eighty-five miles an hour and could go faster. Um, it's it very well composed on the highway like generally it's nice. And like I don't actually need a motorcycle to go like uh this isn't I wouldn't go hit the canyons in it. It's a run around town thing, same as my Vespa.

• 28:28Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 28:28Matt Farah?

As long as they make a really good cargo box on the back, cause gotta be able to carry shit. I got two bags of groceries or a twelve pack. It's gotta be able to go in there.

• 28:38Speaker 01

  Right.

• 28:39Matt Farah?

But, excuse me, um, but like, I hope they don't like, I hope companies don't give up on this because the value proposition isn't there yet. Because they're really fun. They're a good time.

• 28:52Speaker 01

It's probably hard because you know they have to amortize the cost, right? So if if way more people bought them, maybe costs would come down.

• 28:57Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 28:58Speaker 01

But the, I mean, you can see in the comments, a lot of people who probably might ride their, I mean, you know, Cora rides a lot. They're just like, these are really expensive. The specs aren't great. Yeah, I mean, the price of them is really high. Um, and that hurts the take rate because the difference is like EV cars have usable range. Um, and you and you, I think you get something from a lot of EVs that you can't get at that price, like Rivian is as fast as most supercars.

• 29:23Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 29:24Speaker 01

Uh, at least zero to sixty wise and and and it handles as good as some supercars from the nineties and early two thousands. So you get this amazing performance at a low or mo- uh Tesla Model Three performance like. Get all that go and it also is a really convenient thing. This is like not as fast as a fast motorcycle. Doesn't have great range, like it has a, it doesn't have a lot of the attributes an EV car gets.

• 29:46Matt Farah?

It would, it would be a fantastic commuter tool. Like if I had a commute, like a legit ten, twelve mile commute, this would be great. Just perfect. Or if you could, you know, you charge at work, whatever, um. But it's hard, you know, it's a very narrow window of who this thing works for, you know, at that price.

• 30:10Speaker 01

Did you, because you've driven a lot of EVs, you've owned EVs, so I think you might be, you're a good person to pitch this to because you go, I like the propulsion, you know. Now, if someone's coming into this without having an EV experience, do you think they will miss the sound of a motorcycle engine? Or is it quiet and is that more relaxing the same way we feel when we get out of an EV versus an ice car?

• 30:34Matt Farah?

Yeah, like I'm saying, like it's like flying a glider. Like, I would hope, and it's probably not true, but I would hope that people are not so set in their ways that they wouldn't be at least willing to try a new experience. And like, I think that, you know, with motorcycles, people who like motorcycles, often they get a kind of a bunch of them, you know, they're smaller, they're a little less expensive. You can fit four or five of them in the space of a car. And so, if you only like Harleys, or you only like Ducatis, or you only like a specific type of thing, like, okay, but like, the people that I know who collect motorcycles tend to go, a little of this, a little of that, a little of that.

• 31:19Matt Farah?

It's an opportunity to have each motorcycle for what your mood is. And like, I think those kind of people that have five or six bikes would find a good use for, you know, an electric bike. • 33:33Matt Farah?

And now, back to the show.

• 33:35Speaker 01

So I want to ask a question that I want to know. What's the charging situation? Do you have a plug that you carry around with you?

• 33:41Matt Farah?

No. So it is a... Sorry, one second. There's... None of those things were that important, but also, when I went down there, a person was delivering a car. So... Brick and mortar, folks. Brick and mortar. But that was not algorithmic. It didn't, the algorithm didn't feed me that car because of my previous tastes. A customer who paid just dropped it off.

• 34:12Speaker 01

  Oh, right, yeah.

• 34:13Matt Farah?

  You know what I mean?

• 34:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:16Matt Farah?

I just ran up and down the stairs twice, so forgive me.

• 34:20Matt Farah?

The charging question. So, okay, charging. If you flip back to the photo that shows the right side of the bike.

• 34:33Matt Farah?

Other side, there, okay. You'll see above the yellow bit at the bottom. Basically, right where my right hamstring would be.

• 34:44Speaker 01

  There's a door.

• 34:45Matt Farah?

  There's a little door.

• 34:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:46Matt Farah?

And actually, now that you mention it. My only real gripe with this bike from a quality perspective is that door. It's very much the kind of plastic that you would find on like a cubby for like a razor or something. And considering how often you have to charge this bike, which is basically every single time you use it. I think that door is a little chintzy and that may become problematic.

• 35:14Speaker 01

  It'll get looser and looser.

• 35:15Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 35:15Speaker 01

  Gotcha.

• 35:16Matt Farah?

Because it's just like a plastic little pop tab.

• 35:19Speaker 01

  It's a little pressure tab.

• 35:20Matt Farah?

It's not a latch. It's not an actual latch. It's just a little tab. And I'm like, that's, I don't know how long that's lasting, but probably not long enough. So that pulls up the, what you would call the Level 2 charger. Destination CCS charger, not CCS.

• 35:40Matt Farah?

J17, whatever. My Porsche Taycan's home charger fits into that.

• 35:46Speaker 01

  Got it.

• 35:46Matt Farah?

And then it takes about 90 minutes to charge from like 15% to full. Which is not quite as fast as I'd like.

• 35:56Speaker 01

Not, so if you're out for a ride and you gotta plan this charging stop. Like, you gotta have lunch.

• 36:03Matt Farah?

Yeah, and you can't, and there's no DC fast charger. You can't, you can't plug into a DC. So, the onboard charger for the bike is not that fast. The LiveWire, I think, has a more powerful onboard charger. But it's also heavier and more expensive.

• 36:19Speaker 01

So you really, if you buy one of these, you really wanna have like an out and back situation? Like, charge at home, go for a ride, commute, ride at home?

• 36:27Matt Farah?

Here's the thing, you could do, if you had, for instance... You can probably order from Can-Am like a portable charger. And if you, I don't know, depending on your commuting situation, you could get like a level one portable charger for like your office and plug it in while you're at work on a level one. And that would give you enough range to get back home. If your commute was like thirty or forty miles. If your commute's thirty, forty miles, this is not the motorcycle for you, by the way. There's no fairing, there's no windshield. If you're riding fucking eighty miles a day, you should have a windshield on your motorcycle.

• 37:06Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 37:07Matt Farah?

Otherwise, like, what's wrong with you?

• 37:11Matt Farah?

But, uh. So, anyway, uh, that's the charging situation. You do not, at least as far, to my understanding, there isn't a cable that you carry around with you. And there really isn't, in the photo, on top of what, I mean, I guess, looks like a fuel tank, but is not a fuel tank. On top of that, you can see there's like a pop-up cover. In that is like a cubby that would basically fit the bike registration, your phone, and your wallet. Like, and that's pretty much all. Maybe, maybe a pair of sunglasses, but you're not fitting a charge cable in there.

• 37:48Speaker 01

Well, it looks like I'm on the website and the only charger they reference or have a link to is to install in your home through a company called Wallbox.

• 37:57Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 37:57Speaker 01

So there's no like, take this with you.

• 37:59Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 38:01Matt Farah?

  So.

• 38:01Speaker 01

But you can get a big cargo box.

• 38:04Matt Farah?

Yeah, but you could also, I mean, you can buy on Amazon if you want, like, like, I hate to, I hate to like plug Amazon, but you can get a, you can get a generic but quality level one home charger. Just like a generic but quality level two home charger, like what I have. Like I, mine is like. What is mine? I can't remember what it is, but it's like a fairly high end, but like not affiliated with automaker.

• 38:33Speaker 01

  Got it.

• 38:34Matt Farah?

You know, when I, I literally ordered on Amazon.

• 38:38Matt Farah?

Yeah. Oh, cool. Oh, the top. Holy shit.

• 38:40Speaker 01

  Big box.

• 38:41Matt Farah?

That's a, oh God, that's nuts. So the problem with that is. You can't kick your leg over that. Like you have to stand on the peg and then, and then stand and head, you know what I mean? Like a horse.

• 38:56Speaker 01

You'd step through it or step over the seat.

• 38:58Matt Farah?

  That's a high step.

• 38:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 38:59Matt Farah?

Without, that's a high step without, without being able to kick your leg back. Cause that's mounted on where the pass quote passenger seat would be. It's not hanging off the back of that.

• 39:11Speaker 01

Yeah. Cause this, this furthest rear part, I don't know how strong that is. That should might be like a mud. A deflector thing. I mean, really that just holds your license plate and your.

• 39:20Matt Farah?

Nothing comes close to the Vespa when it comes to running errands around town, dude. Nothing.

• 39:26Speaker 01

Cause the Vespa box is mounted further rear, right?

• 39:29Matt Farah?

Yeah. It's mounted aft of the back seat. So you can still have two people and the box, and then you have an under seat box also. So like, if I'm not storing groceries and I hate to fucking harp about my awesome Vespa, but like it's better at this than everything like. And I got it used for $5,000, like a year old with three digit mileage under warranty. So like. Uh, I can took, when I go, I have my jacket, my gloves, my, my sunglasses, my helmet. My helmet, my gloves and my sunglasses go with fit in the cargo box with plenty of room to spare. And my jacket, one fold fits under the seat. And now I'm just wearing normal clothes where I am and everything's locked.

• 40:10Speaker 01

  Yeah. That's, that's great.

• 40:12Matt Farah?

Beat that. Anybody, anybody beat that. Without like some giant like chunky shit on the bike that, that uh, takes away from your cargo space.

• 40:23Speaker 01

Sure. Cause this thing has, where's this, this uh, there's this graphic. Yeah. I mean. Where, where your storage is in the Vespa is like filled with lithium ion down in here, right?

• 40:34Matt Farah?

Well, that's where my legs would go on the Vespa. The storage is the black bit behind it really. Yeah.

• 40:39Speaker 01

  Oh, there's the plug too.

• 40:40Matt Farah?

That's where the plug is. Yeah. So.

• 40:46Matt Farah?

Yeah, it's it's not a very fast charger twenty to go back it just said from twenty to eighty percent in fifty minutes like that's not very good.

• 40:56Speaker 01

  It's not.

• 40:58Matt Farah?

The the live wire was faster.

• 41:00Speaker 01

But but it's like with so many EV things like all right you have to plan your ride now. So if you ride in Malibu you plug it in you go I'm gonna hang out like we know you're gonna have a coffee you know you're gonna have lunch something like that but you can't go I'm just gonna keep moving down the five to ride to Santa Cruz as quickly as possible.

• 41:15Matt Farah?

And and and look a lot of people will a lot of people who complain about not being able to go on a road trip on their motorcycle will never go on a road trip on their motorcycle. They just want the option you know what I mean?

• 41:31Matt Farah?

I I really hope they don't give up on these things because they are fun and I still have it for another like three weeks. I have this thing for a month I'm just talking about it now.

• 41:38Speaker 01

  Cool.

• 41:38Matt Farah?

Because it was a light weekend I rode it a bunch.

• 41:41Speaker 01

  Yeah, perfect.

• 41:42Matt Farah?

I did the experiment I wanted to do if I couldn't get to Malibu and back which is a completely reasonable thing to do on any recreational type thing like forty-four fucking miles you're I can't you know what I mean if I would have been so annoyed if I couldn't have done that but like the fact that I was I was like alright cool like I can do that like I can pretty much get anywhere I need to go in the city you know so alright cool thank you for letting me have a go even though I'm gonna continue having to go and by the way the EV powertrain in this thing is made by Rotax.

• 42:19Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 42:19Matt Farah?

There's Rotax you can see the branding on it um on that page you just had up had branding on it but you can see it here too actually it's it's on the side of the bike uh right above the yellow bit that white writing says Rotax EV on it so like presumably maybe they'll license the technology or the powertrains to other manufacturers.

• 42:39Speaker 01

And that might bring cost down a little bit.

• 42:40Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 42:41Speaker 01

  That'd be cool.

• 42:41Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 42:43Speaker 01

Did you see this accident at the Nürburgring? Everyone's okay.

• 42:47Matt Farah?

  No.

• 42:48Speaker 01

  But it's been...

• 42:49Matt Farah?

  It's really bad?

• 42:49Speaker 01

  Well, it's an interesting crash.

• 42:52Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 42:52Speaker 01

People are talking about... People are talking? So, the reason people are discussing it, there's a Porsche that's making a pass on the left side of an M2.

• 43:00Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 43:01Speaker 01

Two things about it. The crash caused a big fireball, which is rare for a new car.

• 43:05Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 43:05Speaker 01

Again, everyone's alright. But the discussion, and I'm curious what your take is, is who is at fault in this pass on this... in this moment?

• 43:14Matt Farah?

Uh, okay. And we have good enough coverage till you think, make an accurate judgment?

• 43:18Speaker 01

  Definitely.

• 43:19Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 43:19Speaker 01

  We definitely do.

• 43:20Matt Farah?

  Alright, cool.

• 43:20Speaker 01

We've got helmet cam from the Porsche.

• 43:22Matt Farah?

  Okay, cool.

• 43:24Speaker 01

  And so...

• 43:25Matt Farah?

Alright, let's see. So, Porsche's going real quick. Alright. Uh, coming up on the M2. M2 moves right. Porsche goes by. Ohhh. God damn it, dude. That...

• 43:44Matt Farah?

Uh, back it up to that. That's a fucking nasty wreck, man.

• 43:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 43:49Matt Farah?

  Wow.

• 43:49Speaker 01

Full brake caliper, control arms off.

• 43:51Matt Farah?

Oh, that's the shot we need. Cause I actually wanna see... You can see it from that camera?

• 43:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 43:57Matt Farah?

  Where the M2... Yeah, okay.

• 44:02Matt Farah?

In my opinion, the M2 driver is at fault because, look. Look where... Okay, it's... Where was the Porsche when the M2...

• 44:14Speaker 01

  Turned in?

• 44:14Matt Farah?

  Started to turn in?

• 44:17Speaker 01

Not quite alongside. Front of Porsche might be at M2 door.

• 44:22Matt Farah?

  Yeah. Maybe not.

• 44:25Speaker 01

But, I think M2 driver should have been... have seen that Porsche in the side mirrors. Like, that's... And that's a skill, is paying attention to what's behind you when you're on a track. But, I feel like they should've known they were there.

• 44:38Matt Farah?

  So, here's the thing.

• 44:41Matt Farah?

It's funny that this accident happened just like this.

• 44:46Matt Farah?

This happened to me, not at the Nürburgring, at Streets of Willow. But this exact thing happened to me and I was the Porsche. Okay, in that, in that incident. And, and, and it was a regular track day on a regular track. It was not, as the video says, tourist day at Nürburgring. That's a little different. That's not a track day. So rightfully or wrongfully, whatever, there was no, I didn't dispute, from the minute it happened, I claimed responsibility for it. I said that was my fault, it was not clear, even though it was open passing session.

• 45:32Matt Farah?

It looked like they were moving right for me to get by, but they weren't moving right for me to get by. That's kind of just where the line was.

• 45:42Speaker 01

Which I think was what the M2 did. The M2 moved out right. And then for people listening, it's a left-hand turn, it's a big, long one. But then they start coming in towards the apex and they push the Porsche up onto the curb and then it all goes real south.

• 45:56Matt Farah?

And I, fortunately, when it happened to me, the hit was very, very small. And I, I, I literally wrote the guy a check and apologized and we walked away friends. I think it cost me a thousand bucks.

• 46:10Matt Farah?

And I wrote about it and I, this was not a secret. I wrote about it when I was, did the Evora GT five track days in seven days.

• 46:18Speaker 01

  Oh, did that, okay.

• 46:20Matt Farah?

Yeah. And then, by the way, that was like track day number three and I kept going. That was a tough motherfucking car. That car was awesome. But point being, what happened was the guy, the guy appeared to be moving right. And because I was so much faster, the other car was an S2000, I had way more horsepower. I was able, it looked like I was able to get by, but he wasn't lifting. It wasn't, he, he wasn't a point by and a lift. It was, I was just faster, so I was like, okay, go. But he had no clue I was there. So that's where I, that's where I come to the Nürburgring. In the Nürburgring...

• 47:00Matt Farah?

Even though the overtaking car does have the responsibility to be safe, I think on tourist days, it's the responsibility for the other car to keep right and to know that faster traffic is approaching. And so it's a little murkier to me on a tourist day.

• 47:18Speaker 01

It's, it's a little muddy because, you know, if you go F1 rules, it's like, was Porsche alongside enough?

• 47:24Matt Farah?

Well, that's the thing. In track day, I would say it's probably the Porsche's fault. But tourist day is different from track day. Tourist days, you're taught explicitly to keep right. You're not taught to run the racing line unless nobody's around. You're supposed to know if traffic's approaching from behind and keep fucking right.

• 47:44Speaker 01

Yeah. And I, you know, as someone who's done, I haven't done a ton of track stuff, but enough, especially with like Lemons, the speed at which this Porsche came up on the car.

• 47:54Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 47:55Speaker 01

I know would pop into the rearview mirror, fill the view of the M2. Like, it's gonna be empty and then suddenly there's a thing and it should draw your eye to that moment. It's not like it was, they were there for a minute and you kind of get lulled into this Porsche staying behind me and then they go for it. And this guy was coming up fast. So I feel like they should have seen that car. Uh, I mean, it's a, it's just a, it's a bad situation, but um, it's been discussed quite a lot.

• 48:21Matt Farah?

Yeah, see here, I feel, I feel like here, if I'm in the Porsche, that M2 is, is pretty far to the right.

• 48:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 48:30Matt Farah?

  I, I'm gonna feel.

• 48:32Speaker 01

  Body language of M2.

• 48:33Matt Farah?

Body language of M2 says, I'm opening the door for you.

• 48:37Speaker 01

  Absolutely, I agree.

• 48:37Matt Farah?

And so it would be a big ass fucking surprise when over crest, they come down for a late apex and there you are.

• 48:46Speaker 01

And, and for people listening, the M2 almost pit maneuvers this Porsche.

• 48:49Matt Farah?

  But from the front.

• 48:50Speaker 01

  Uh.

• 48:51Matt Farah?

Oh, no, from the, no, no, from the back. Play it again for me. I've already forgotten.

• 48:55Speaker 01

  It's next to him?

• 48:56Matt Farah?

Oh, no, he hits the back. He hits the rear fender. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 48:58Speaker 01

And then they both get sent, they both get sent into the Armco.

• 49:01Matt Farah?

  That's a holy shitter.

• 49:02Speaker 01

It's a really hard hit. And they're going fast. They're well over 100 miles per hour.

• 49:05Matt Farah?

  What does that say? 164?

• 49:06Speaker 01

I think what, uh... I mean, he's at 192 kilometers per hour.

• 49:11Matt Farah?

  Yeah, they're humming.

• 49:12Speaker 01

120 miles per hour right as contact happens, yeah.

• 49:15Matt Farah?

And so, so the Porsche thought they had the line, but really, the M2 was just taking a late apex and didn't even know he was there.

• 49:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:23Matt Farah?

  God, that's shitty.

• 49:24Speaker 01

I don't know if the Porsche chose to go up on curbing or got, or pushed and was like, oh shit, they're coming over, and the M2 just kept coming.

• 49:31Matt Farah?

  Wow.

• 49:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:32Matt Farah?

That sucks. God, what a big hit.

• 49:35Speaker 01

  Huge hit.

• 49:36Matt Farah?

  And wait, which, wow.

• 49:39Speaker 01

Porsche flies up in the air, wing comes off, fireball. I honestly, watching this-

• 49:45Matt Farah?

  Everyone, everyone lived?

• 49:46Speaker 01

Yeah, they're all fine. Otherwise, I wouldn't have put this up there.

• 49:48Matt Farah?

  Wow, that's nuts.

• 49:49Speaker 01

And, you know, they're out of it, and, but like, watching this made me want to get a new car, because my car wouldn't handle that hit as well. And my car's got side airbags and stuff, but you see shit like this.

• 50:01Matt Farah?

It's not a guarantee, but those are, those are two very safely designed cars. Wow, that passenger compartment in a M2 is incredibly intact.

• 50:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 50:11Matt Farah?

  That's crazy.

• 50:12Speaker 01

Exactly. Every airbag, the thing looks like they put down curtains to sleep. I mean, all the windows are covered by airbags.

• 50:18Matt Farah?

  I don't know. I, I, I think there's a, I think there's, wow, the front of that Porsche is literally gone.

• 50:23Speaker 01

All the way to the firewall.

• 50:25Matt Farah?

The firewall, but then the back of it looks pretty good.

• 50:27Speaker 01

Well, I guess, I mean, the fuel tank's in the front, right? So that's what blew up and got ripped off.

• 50:32Matt Farah?

Ripped it right off, yeah. That's crazy. I'm glad they're okay. That's fucking nuts. I, I, I think it's a little murkier on the Nürburgring. On a track day, unfortunately, that is the Porsche driver's fault.

• 50:44Speaker 01

  For going for this, but...

• 50:45Matt Farah?

Yeah, for not, for, for it being, you know, a, a, a place to overtake without enough room and without a point by.

• 50:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 50:53Matt Farah?

I think that, I think so. Yeah, that sucks.

• 50:55Speaker 01

Nürburgring, man, is, it's just a tricky, because there are so many, the tourist days, there are a huge variety of cars and drivers, and they're all, I mean, it's, it's like lemons. There's fast shit, slow shit, good people, bad people, everything in between. Um, it's, yeah.

• 51:11Matt Farah?

It's very wild stuff. Um, okay, wow.

• 51:16Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 51:16Matt Farah?

That's crazy. Uh, so, I have some fun news. I have been upgraded. I've been upgraded to premium economy. Uh, originally, the plan was to tow the Manks to Pebble with a Cayenne. But my Hail Mary has come through. And I have procured the only Bentley Bentayga press vehicle in America equipped with a tow package.

• 51:43Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 51:44Matt Farah?

And so, we will have a British racing green satin over Cumbrian green diamond quilt, uh, Mulliner specification interior, um, in, in order, uh, to tow with.

• 52:03Matt Farah?

So, that will be a good time. So, we will be able, uh, we've been invited, uh, to display the entire rig together at Motor Lux on Wednesday night.

• 52:15Speaker 01

  Really?

• 52:15Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 52:16Speaker 01

That makes so much sense. Honest to God. If you, if you had a Cayenne, they'd be like, no, thank you.

• 52:20Matt Farah?

  I wouldn't have even asked.

• 52:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 52:22Matt Farah?

I, I, as soon as I, as soon as I fucking got this, I called Art. I was like, dude, we gotta do it.

• 52:27Speaker 01

Can I guess the MSRP? I haven't seen this sheet.

• 52:30Matt Farah?

  This one, so, yeah, so, so it's not a, it's not a, um, it's not a speed. It's not a, it's not a, it's not a hybrid.

• 52:38Speaker 01

So, the regular Bentayga starts at 207?

• 52:42Matt Farah?

This one, uh, wait, no. This is a black edition.

• 52:47Speaker 01

All right, let me see what that starts at.

• 52:50Matt Farah?

That's, I have it. That starts at 262.

• 52:53Speaker 01

  262?

• 52:54Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 52:54Speaker 01

All right. So, this is green, a fancy green satin.

• 53:00Matt Farah?

  It's a fancy green satin.

• 53:01Speaker 01

  Mulliner interior.

• 53:02Matt Farah?

Mulliner interior. Do you want to know what other big-ticket items they have? And not how much they cost.

• 53:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:07Matt Farah?

Uh, LED welcome lamps, uh, the tow package, uh, jeweled fuel and oil filler caps.

• 53:15Speaker 01

I can't wait to see those.

• 53:16Matt Farah?

Uh, rear acoustic privacy glass, sports pedals, mood lighting, uh, Bang & Olufsen stereo.

• 53:24Speaker 01

  That's probably like 10.

• 53:25Matt Farah?

Uh, the, the satin paint. Um, so here's one, uh, four plus one seat configuration. Now, I don't, does that mean it's fi, it's a five-seater? That it's a bench and not captain's chairs?

• 53:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:40Matt Farah?

So, it's an optional bench rather than captain's chairs?

• 53:42Speaker 01

It's probably like those molded buckets, but there's a bridge in the middle and the back.

• 53:47Matt Farah?

Okay, so that, then we got that.

• 53:49Speaker 01

Is the paint? Uh, over to-

• 53:52Matt Farah?

I'm sorry, Precision Diamond Quilt specification and self, self leveling wheel badge by Mulliner.

• 54:01Speaker 01

Oh, so it stays upright, the B?

• 54:03Matt Farah?

Which I've, I've said in other Bentley reviews is the, by far the best value in all Bentley options. It's shockingly cheap for how awesome it is.

• 54:11Speaker 01

  It was like 800 bucks?

• 54:13Matt Farah?

  It's less.

• 54:13Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 54:14Matt Farah?

Yeah, it's by far the best value in Bentley options.

• 54:16Speaker 01

Can I guess the paint cost? I'm gonna go with over 10, but less than 20.

• 54:21Matt Farah?

  Yes.

• 54:22Speaker 01

  Alright, so it's like 16?

• 54:24Matt Farah?

  Less.

• 54:24Speaker 01

  12, 5?

• 54:26Matt Farah?

  Close.

• 54:26Speaker 01

  Okay, uh, stereo?

• 54:29Matt Farah?

You don't have to, you don't have to go option by option.

• 54:31Speaker 01

I just wanna do those two.

• 54:32Matt Farah?

  Okay, yeah, sure.

• 54:32Speaker 01

Is the stereo a standalone option, or is it a part of a package?

• 54:36Matt Farah?

  Uh, it's a standalone.

• 54:38Speaker 01

Is it like 19 speaker shit?

• 54:40Matt Farah?

Doesn't say, Bangin' Olufsen for Bentley is what it says. Close.

• 54:45Speaker 01

Okay. Alright, so total this thing's probably 3.48.

• 54:50Matt Farah?

No, actually, despite what we've just said, this is a relatively low option vehicle, believe it or not. It has only $39,875 in options on it, and the total is 306,725. But if you ask me, it looks like a million.

• 55:09Speaker 01

I was gonna say, this just sounds-

• 55:11Matt Farah?

  It does.

• 55:12Speaker 01

It sounds like 5 to 6.

• 55:12Matt Farah?

It sounds like someone has chosen the options for this with a real eye towards fucking greatest hits.

• 55:20Speaker 01

  Cool.

• 55:21Matt Farah?

Yeah, but, but satin green, towing, sparkly blue?

• 55:26Speaker 01

  It's great.

• 55:27Matt Farah?

  It's gonna look insane.

• 55:28Speaker 01

No, it's good. It, it, you're going to the place where Bentley goes, "Yeah, we wanna see, we wanna show that this can tow stuff around." Cause that's who's there, yeah, cool, that's cool.

• 55:37Matt Farah?

And by the way, we're gonna unload it after the, we, so the, you know, the, we're driving up Wednesday, the party's Wednesday. So I have to like, just make a swing by the house, like throw my luggage down, and then drive straight to the event. And load it in, and then unload it for the tour the next morning, after the party, so.

• 55:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 55:56Matt Farah?

  It'll be a hectic day.

• 55:57Speaker 01

Uh, but at least you don't have to unload the Manx and then load it or you just.

• 56:01Matt Farah?

Yeah, no, we only have to unload it once and then load it up again at the end of the weekend. So that is very, very exciting. Shout out to, uh, for Bentley. And I mean, I'm, I'm actually, I'm going to write a story for Road and Track about towing with the Bentley. Uh, by the way, we're gonna have to figure out the logistics of some car to car still photography, Zach. Uh, Ali can come in handy with that.

• 56:25Speaker 01

  For what?

• 56:26Matt Farah?

For, we have to get car to car of the tow.

• 56:30Speaker 01

  Yeah, okay.

• 56:31Matt Farah?

  Yeah. Um, right.

• 56:34Speaker 01

What we really need is a Manx leading your towing Manx, cause it's open air.

• 56:39Matt Farah?

  There, everyone will be there.

• 56:41Speaker 01

I'll lean out of a car.

• 56:41Matt Farah?

There's gonna be like seven Manxes up there.

• 56:43Speaker 01

Ali, you know what's gonna be funny? Ali will bring like his Evo and I'll be like, oh, just trying to get a still photo of this car.

• 56:49Matt Farah?

Uh, something funny, um, okay. Do you wanna talk about something that's kinda funny or kinda depressing?

• 56:58Speaker 01

Let's go funny, cause I showed a car accident. So, let's, let's, let's save the depressing thing.

• 57:03Matt Farah?

There's a thing I've been seeing repeatedly on the internet that is sort of funny, which is people trying to say that people who are, do our jobs don't really know what we're talking about because

• 57:19Matt Farah?

they have X car and get used to X feature that we complain about.

• 57:24Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 57:25Matt Farah?

And I think that is funny to me because you getting used to it doesn't mean it doesn't suck.

• 57:34Speaker 01

I think, well, I think both are gonna be true. I think there's times where we say, we, we've called it out, we go, this is a journalist problem. I wasn't familiar with that control, found it. But then there's stuff where.

• 57:45Matt Farah?

Where the company changes the car.

• 57:47Speaker 01

No, no, where people will go, I got used to it. You go, yeah, but all of its competitors do this in a way that is simpler to use or easier or whatever.

• 57:54Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 57:55Speaker 01

And it's, and it can be less convoluted to control. And so I think that's an instance where that person is just like, I got used to wearing a flip flop and a hiking boot and it's fine. Like, sure, but other places sell you two shoes that match.

• 58:06Matt Farah?

It just, it made me chuckle that people don't put that together. I mean, I guess it's, most people do put that together and we try to be honest about those types of things, like when you can. But it's weird when.

• 58:21Matt Farah?

The second half of that sentence, the one I saw this morning was, they prefer to read owner reviews. Someone who owns a car and then reviews it. Which is weird because that brings like other sorts of problems. Like you don't have the journalist problem of you only got to use this car for a week and didn't really settle in with it. But the other problem is like sunk cost and things like that.

• 58:45Speaker 01

  Bias, yeah.

• 58:46Matt Farah?

Bias that like, which I see way, way more. I see way, I read some of these owner reviews sometimes. And I see way more apologizing for shittiness in their own car than I see journalists miss, you know mistakenly calling features bad that were actually good.

• 59:06Speaker 01

  Yeah, of course.

• 59:06Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 59:08Speaker 01

That trait of not wanting to be wrong.

• 59:10Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 59:11Speaker 01

I mean, without going into the main topic of that, like, there's a lot of situations where that arises. And I think it's, it's, it's a rare gem when you find an owner who goes, I own this car and here's what I don't like about it. And they're very forthright. I think most people want to tell everyone like, hey, this thing was awesome. Either because it makes them feel correct or they want more people to join the club because they like, they like the car enough. And then they'll, you know, kind of minimize the problems that they're dealing with. Sure.

• 59:39Matt Farah?

I don't know. Maybe I thought that would be better radio this morning. Never mind. Okay, check, or rarely do we have a big stinkers, but that was one.

• 59:48Speaker 01

Stinkers, just like, this makes sense. I understand, I understand where you're coming from.

• 59:52Matt Farah?

We'll go, we'll go to the people. How about we do that? The people have, the people, they, they continue to speak. Of course, we forgot to talk about our shows in Texas. Come see us. Grab tickets now. Zach, where have we put the ticket links? On our, our Instagram, LinkedIn bio?

• 1:00:07Speaker 01

  Go to Instagram, LinkedIn bio.

• 1:00:08Matt Farah?

And do we put them in the show notes for these week's shows? We've very much.

• 1:00:13Speaker 01

  Also that.

• 1:00:14Matt Farah?

July 24th in Houston, July 25th in Dallas. We are going to be there live with Christian James Hand. We are getting some exclusive merch for, Nino is making our concert poster. I sent him some very silly photographs of myself last night. In order to hopefully turn into some sort of Hunter at Thompson like monstrosity.

• 1:00:40Matt Farah?

For our show, uh, and it's gonna be a good time. Christian's excited, we are all excited.

• 1:00:46Speaker 01

  Cool.

• 1:00:46Matt Farah?

It's gonna be fun. Um, right, but the Patreon, of course, is where you, uh, get, uh, the show early, it's where you get the show alive. In fact, you get it like now, like you're looking at now, sir. If you're a Patreon, if you're one of like, I don't know, however many people are here now. Uh, it's where you get exclusive early access to collabs, where you get the show without ads, and it's where you get extra show. All of those things can happen at Patreon.com slash the Smoking Tire Podcast. And let's get to some of those Patreon questions. Uh, disillusioned in Detroit says, watch nerdery. Did you see the new winder that Timex made with the New Yorker for the 100th anniversary?

• 1:01:29Matt Farah?

I didn't, and Zach will pull it up right now, and oh, I think that's a very cute little watch. It's a, uh, it's a Timex Marlin with, I mean, I don't know what that dial is actually made of. It does look like porcelain, but something tells me at $249 it isn't. But if you really like the New Yorker, I think that's kinda cute.

• 1:01:52Speaker 01

  I do too.

• 1:01:53Matt Farah?

Yeah, kind of into it. I think it'd be really fun if you got, took that and like, sent it to like, the homie, the dial artist, and had him like, go to town coloring it in in a fun way.

• 1:02:05Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:02:06Matt Farah?

  That could be cool.

• 1:02:07Speaker 01

Sure. I like the little comic drawing, I mean, that's my favorite part about the New Yorker.

• 1:02:11Matt Farah?

If you are on a tight budget, Timex makes a fine quality watch. Their, their GMTs and shit are like real dope for $200.

• 1:02:21Matt Farah?

Are we, uh, Explorer ST says, are we going to the Audrain this year? Uh, we're not going to the concours in October.

• 1:02:32Matt Farah?

The, we haven't been invited to the veteran tour yet. I hope they invite us again. It's certainly a good time. Uh, but we'll see, no plans right now. Turd Ferguson is looking for value in his car, and is looking at Miata's, but then shifted to Z3s, and then M Roadsters, and now on to S2000s. What are your thoughts on value for roadstering?

• 1:02:58Matt Farah?

If you fit in an S2000, they are good time. And they're very well made. And I mean, they're all like, the newest one is 20 years old now, almost, right? But, but they were, they have a good, good supportive community and they're well made. And there's a bunch of like low mile ones out there still. Um, I don't know about high mile ones, what, if they're, have a lot of needs, but.

• 1:03:24Speaker 01

  I don't know, I'm not sure, like, they're, they're fun and they're special.

• 1:03:27Matt Farah?

Um, uh, S52 M Roadsters and M Coops are unloved, but are, I think, really nice cars to drive.

• 1:03:36Speaker 01

Yeah, and I drove one that had mild suspension stuff done and it made it feel a lot lighter and more fun. That's, and that, I think that's a better, like, do everything car. Can be fast, anything else, can have grand touring ability, whereas the S2000 is light, loud, high rev, you know, all that stuff.

• 1:03:52Matt Farah?

I think the Z, I think the Z3 will have a little better insulation on the top, stuff like that. It might, I've not, I don't have a lot of miles on Z3 Roadsters with the top up, but I think they're a little better insulated than Miata's or S2000s. I mean, I mean, also, like, you know, don't, uh, don't rule out Boxsters. I mean, Boxsters, I think, if you're gonna talk about an M Roadster, you should talk about a Boxster. I mean, yeah, the engine's in the middle, not in front, but it's, it's, seats too, modest power, very high on the engagement level, convertible, you know, competes in, in all those, all them competitions in the 2000s that the magazines were doing were like,

• 1:04:35Matt Farah?

Boxster, S2000, like, that was all of them, you know? Um, I don't fit in S2000s, so I don't like them, but they have great shifters, really good shifters. Uh, wait, oh, super fast, have fun.

• 1:04:51Speaker 01

  Super fast.

• 1:04:52Matt Farah?

That's how you pronounce that. You must say it with lift. Uh, an Altima dri- wait, what? Oh, this is hypothetical.

• 1:05:00Speaker 01

  Hypothetical.

• 1:05:01Matt Farah?

This is hypothetical. I couldn't, this seemed like a news item to me.

• 1:05:03Speaker 01

When I read it, I thought the same thing.

• 1:05:04Matt Farah?

Okay, cuz, and maybe when I read it, you'll hear it this way too. An Altima driver just won the lottery and drove through the dealership showroom wall, which, let's just game that out for a second. If you really did win the lottery and you drove an Altima and a dealership like fucked you.

• 1:05:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:05:24Matt Farah?

You might be like, "I'm buying a window today."

• 1:05:27Speaker 01

  I'm returning this car.

• 1:05:30Speaker 01

And you lose all your winnings, you get sued, yeah?

• 1:05:32Matt Farah?

  Yeah, like, in, in-

• 1:05:34Speaker 01

Well, a guy did that, uh, last year, earlier this year, in the Subaru. He was pissed off.

• 1:05:38Matt Farah?

I don't think he won the lottery, though.

• 1:05:39Speaker 01

No, no, he won a court case, but he returned his car.

• 1:05:43Matt Farah?

If that guy, uh, what, the billionaire in LA who won the fucking Powerball, Edwin, whatever his name is, if he did it, that would be legendary.

• 1:05:52Matt Farah?

Cause in the, in the movies, like, heroes do that all the time.

• 1:05:56Speaker 01

  Yeah, and there's repercussions.

• 1:05:57Matt Farah?

They just like, they, well, they just, "Well, I'll just pay for it." Remember Almost Famous, they fucking smashed the bus through the gate and said, "You want to buy a gate?"

• 1:06:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:06:05Matt Farah?

  Hero moment.

• 1:06:06Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:06:06Matt Farah?

You know what I mean? If you won a billion dollars, you're like, "They charged me 37% on this piece of shit Altima." Fucking, "I'm buying a dealership window today."

• 1:06:15Speaker 01

Yeah, you just buy the dealership.

• 1:06:19Matt Farah?

Oh, but that wasn't super fast, fast of question. Which was, what dealership did they hit? And what high-end, zero-taste car are they buying with their wealth?

• 1:06:30Speaker 01

So this is like a Kool-Aid Man situation. They crash through the dealership of the car they want, right?

• 1:06:35Matt Farah?

  Oh, it's that, okay.

• 1:06:36Speaker 01

It's basically, what would a Altima driver buy if they won the lottery?

• 1:06:42Matt Farah?

It's funny that they like, they're gonna crash through the dealership and then like, expect good customer service?

• 1:06:48Speaker 01

You know, I think some dealerships, if you show up with a big check, they might go, "That's fine." And then they're gonna mark up whatever exotic car a huge amount.

• 1:06:56Matt Farah?

Um, I mean, it's gotta be, like, like, the most unsellable, like, no, here's what they're gonna do. And ask me how I know this. What they're gonna do is they're gonna spend way too much money, like, 50% over, over MSRP, buying a Singer or a Gunther, like, at auction somewhere. Or like from a dealership here in Beverly Hills or something, right? They're gonna spend like $2 million on a Singer Classic. Because they don't wanna wait to get a new one from Singer, right? Then, they're gonna send it to Singer to have them strip it and repaint it and re-trim it in the color they wanted. And that's gonna cost another like 800,000.

• 1:07:39Matt Farah?

And then, by the end of that, they'll have paid like two and a half times more for a Singer than just like waiting for one, like putting down a deposit and just like waiting to build their own, which you can do.

• 1:07:55Matt Farah?

So that, I think that's what they're gonna do, is they're gonna spend two and a half times what it costs. And because they're gonna send it back to Singer, they already own it, but they won't actually have the car they want. For as long as it would've taken them to just order a new one.

• 1:08:08Speaker 01

Okay. I think they're punching through the window of like a secondhand Chiron dealership. And they're gonna walk out with that.

• 1:08:16Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 1:08:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:08:18Matt Farah?

And then sell it when they figure out what a service costs.

• 1:08:20Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:08:21Matt Farah?

Uh, Nice Cam says F8 spiders are all trading in the 400 to 450 range. God damn! That's crazy. I didn't know that. I don't watch F8 spiders, but like, that's what they weren't new. Like you could, you could've bought one of those new, if you could get it for MSRP in 2019 and been driving it for, you know, seven years for $0. God damn it. Uh, does it make sense to buy one with a much higher sticker, higher options, rather than a lower one with less options, since you're paying around that anyway? Uh, or do you think, uh, that values will come down? Now, here's the question.

• 1:09:02Speaker 01

For quick reference, there's four spiders that were sold on Cars and Bids last year and this year, and they all are below 400. They're like 330 to 390.

• 1:09:11Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 1:09:13Matt Farah?

Now, I don't know if the question that Nice Cam's asking is should he buy a higher spec one or a lower spec one? But if we're talking about used, I don't know if he's saying should he buy one with like 1,000 miles on it that's top of the market, or one with 15,000 miles on it that's 50, 60,000 dollars less. I would rather buy one that has miles on it. It's been driven, it's been serviced. And like, I think that's fine. I wouldn't necessarily, this'll, you can get so many options on Ferraris that I would not get. Like, and the car would be the same.

• 1:09:47Speaker 01

Right, so that you don't wanna go, I'm gonna go full stickered out because people could choose shit you don't want that no one else cares about.

• 1:09:53Matt Farah?

  And costs a fortune.

• 1:09:54Speaker 01

That, but also like the base one might not, you want somewhere in the middle, I think.

• 1:09:58Matt Farah?

You don't want plastic all over it, but you also don't need, like I would skip carbon fiber engine bay. Like, I would skip all that shit. Like, you, stuff that you is in your hands or that you're looking at all the time, make it nice, skip the rest of it. I'd, I'd probably pay more to get a gray color that wasn't red, you know? You show me an awesome color and I'll pay extra for that. Uh, have either of us driven the Aston Martin Verage? You mean the one from like, the 90s? I've driven one from the 90s and it's not particularly impressive until you start talking about the like V550 and V600.

• 1:10:39Speaker 01

  This one?

• 1:10:40Matt Farah?

Well, there's the, there's the DB9 Verage, so that one, that's the, the, when, uh, I don't know, 2015 or something? Uh, 12, 2011, 12, the very end of the DB9, they tweaked it, they made it look a little nice, and they called it the Verage.

• 1:10:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:10:57Matt Farah?

Um, we actually have one at WCCS that looks, it's a really beautiful car.

• 1:11:01Speaker 01

I think these have great interior. I remember seeing one in Europe, uh, yeah, this was before, I mean, it was, it was one of those interiors where I got hard to see some of the buttons, but I just like the way this design looks.

• 1:11:13Matt Farah?

It looks great, other than that pop-up screen on the top, which is the Volvo screen that stinks.

• 1:11:18Speaker 01

And the PR and, and the, the drive buttons on the dash I don't like.

• 1:11:21Matt Farah?

Yeah, but very pretty cars and they drive very nice. I don't know if this, uh, if nice cams means the one from the early 90s or the one from 2011 and 12, but, the early 90s one, you need the V600, the V550, the fast one.

• 1:11:37Speaker 01

What a weird design that is, in my opinion. It's like tiny canopy, huge body.

• 1:11:40Matt Farah?

Yeah. The ones with the beefy arches and shit, like the, the one, second row, that one. Like, that one, like, when you make it look beefy, it looks pretty good. It's got kind of a touring car kind of vibe.

• 1:11:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:11:56Matt Farah?

That looks nice. And then the V600 Le Mans.

• 1:12:00Speaker 01

That's the one that had the twin superchargers, right?

• 1:12:04Speaker 01

  Cool engine bay.

• 1:12:04Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:05Speaker 01

But like this looks like nothing.

• 1:12:06Matt Farah?

Sergio has the slightly smaller V550 Le Mans, which they did for one year before doing the 600, which also has two superchargers.

• 1:12:15Speaker 01

Like if you told me that this was Chrysler's sports performance concept in the early 90s, I'd go, yeah, sure.

• 1:12:20Matt Farah?

They did a shooting brake concept. Look on the right, the right side of the screen there, yeah. Little wonky, but I kinda dig it.

• 1:12:27Speaker 01

I dig it from A-pillar back.

• 1:12:28Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:12:29Matt Farah?

Yeah, I'm kind of into it.

• 1:12:32Matt Farah?

But if you, okay. Where are we here? Piggly Wiggly Deluxe says, my Mazda was stolen yesterday. Oh, what a bummer. Other than the obvious, police report telling friends, family and coworkers, what else can I do to help find it?

• 1:12:49Speaker 01

Uh, I mean, I've seen a lot of people on Instagram, you know, FD drivers, if their friend's trailer's stolen, they post the thing. Basically, like, get the word out.

• 1:12:57Matt Farah?

  Crowdsource.

• 1:12:58Speaker 01

Crowdsource, social media, and especially if you have friends that are local and have them repost shit. It's just keeping eyes out. Depends on where you live, like, has it already gone to a shipping port? Or is it just being driven around by someone? I don't know. I think you get the word out and keep it on Facebook Marketplace, too. Truly.

• 1:13:17Matt Farah?

Yeah. Uh, yeah. Look on Craigslist. Uh, I mean, you know, literally places where people sell used cars, like, you can look on Craigslist and be like hashtag, like, no title.

• 1:13:29Speaker 01

  Like, yeah.

• 1:13:30Matt Farah?

Yeah, like, if you know, IYKYK, like.

• 1:13:34Speaker 01

Yeah, I guess it'd be hard to sell that kind of, that kind of on the car.

• 1:13:36Matt Farah?

Start going to takeovers, it might just like show up there.

• 1:13:39Speaker 01

That's, that sucks. That's a bummer for this person.

• 1:13:41Matt Farah?

Oh, man, Hannah and I, Hannah and I, there's some show, that's, I think it's called like Mean Girls, and it's about like, girls that like murder. Right, right?

• 1:13:53Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:13:54Matt Farah?

And there's one that's about these girls that like go to street takeovers. And they're like a girl clique.

• 1:14:00Speaker 01

  Oh, I've seen clips of.

• 1:14:01Matt Farah?

  You've seen that shit?

• 1:14:02Speaker 01

I haven't seen that show, but I have seen street takeover clips of women driving like, SRT this, or CTSV that, and like whipping and drifting and shit, yeah.

• 1:14:13Matt Farah?

The impression I got of these particular women was not that they were drivers. It was that they were there to be like. Candy.

• 1:14:21Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:14:21Matt Farah?

  Basically.

• 1:14:21Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:14:22Matt Farah?

That was their vibe, as told by them.

• 1:14:24Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:14:24Matt Farah?

  Do this television show.

• 1:14:25Speaker 01

It's like Fast and Furious one.

• 1:14:27Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:28Speaker 01

Ja Rule almost had a threesome.

• 1:14:29Matt Farah?

Yeah, basically, but like at, at takeovers in Sacramento. It was like.

• 1:14:35Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:14:36Matt Farah?

  It was, it was rough.

• 1:14:37Speaker 01

I'm not surprised by any of this.

• 1:14:38Matt Farah?

It was rough, yeah, not great. Charles Leclerc's clinical depression. Renault posted an 11 billion dollar loss regarding Nissan in the first half of this year. At what point does someone have enough and put the brand out to pasture?

• 1:14:58Matt Farah?

Uh, yeah, that's not so good, 11 billion dollars.

• 1:15:03Speaker 01

  A lot, uh.

• 1:15:04Matt Farah?

I mean, I, I don't know what the answer is to that.

• 1:15:12Matt Farah?

How do you lose that much money like while selling cars? Like there's Nissans all over the place.

• 1:15:18Speaker 01

I was, I was looking at like, I'm trying to think of other companies that lose a lot of money. I was looking at Rivian. Cause they, they were losing a lot of money per quarter. Um, but their first quarter 2025, they had 206 million dollars of positive profit.

• 1:15:30Matt Farah?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:15:31Speaker 01

Might be the first one. No, highest to date. So that is a huge, I mean, yeah, Nissan's been struggling for a long time.

• 1:15:37Matt Farah?

That's not even the whole year.

• 1:15:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:15:39Matt Farah?

That's so bad. I don't know. I, I wish I could say I studied the, uh, like, I don't know in the scale of Nissan, how bad that is. It sounds horrible, but like, if these people play with numbers, I don't fucking comprehend, like I.

• 1:15:53Speaker 01

And there's all these ways like restructure things.

• 1:15:55Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:55Speaker 01

I think what we, what we can say is that it's very rare for a car company with any kind of history to just be thrown in the garbage.

• 1:16:03Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:03Speaker 01

There is life support for everyone, you know? And now, there's more of it for cool company, Aston Martin bankrupt seven times, I think.

• 1:16:12Matt Farah?

Yeah, if your cars are pretty, someone will save you.

• 1:16:15Speaker 01

Yeah, exactly. So Nissan, I don't know.

• 1:16:17Matt Farah?

  There's a metaphor in there.

• 1:16:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:20Matt Farah?

  Um, it's, sounds bad.

• 1:16:22Speaker 01

  Does.

• 1:16:22Matt Farah?

And also they don't really have any good new product.

• 1:16:25Speaker 01

There's also that, but they also are so big, like they have all these factories. I, I, I think it's hard to let that stuff just go. Because you have all this equipment and shit, who knows? That's big.

• 1:16:37Matt Farah?

  That sounds like a ton.

• 1:16:38Speaker 01

It does sound like a lot of money.

• 1:16:40Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:41Speaker 01

That sounds, out of context, that sounds so out of touch. Like, 11 billion does sound like quite a bit of money.

• 1:16:47Matt Farah?

No, but like, when you're talking about a multinational, who the fuck, they could, I couldn't tell you right now if Nissan is supposed to be making, I'm sure they're supposed to be making more than zero.

• 1:17:00Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:17:00Matt Farah?

But like, I couldn't tell you if a good year for Nissan is 2 billion?

• 1:17:05Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:17:05Matt Farah?

  10 billion?

• 1:17:06Speaker 01

I mean, profit's good, but sure, do they just accept that we're going through a couple of years of restructuring, we're gonna lose a billion every year?

• 1:17:13Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:13Speaker 01

I mean, what this really needs is a private equity douche company to come in, buy this, saddle the debt on someone else, and then they can like, call Nissan safe or something like that.

• 1:17:22Matt Farah?

  Sounds good.

• 1:17:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:17:23Matt Farah?

  Mission accomplished.

• 1:17:24Speaker 01

  Yeah, great stuff.

• 1:17:25Matt Farah?

Uh, Peter Panarchy, Peter Panarchy, Peter Panarchy!

• 1:17:29Speaker 01

  That's funny, I like that.

• 1:17:30Matt Farah?

Okay, how do you, okay, in the future, if you want people to pronounce that right, I would lowercase p, capital A.

• 1:17:39Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:17:39Matt Farah?

You know what I mean? Don't make me do so much work.

• 1:17:42Speaker 01

  Peter Panarchy.

• 1:17:43Matt Farah?

Peter Panarchy is pretty fun, though. That's a very good one.

• 1:17:47Matt Farah?

Wants to talk about a couple drawbacks that EVs have while off-roading. Uh, one is a lack of low range, minimum wheel speed is just too high.

• 1:18:01Matt Farah?

I would, I mean, maybe when rock crawling, but I've, I've never had an issue.

• 1:18:08Speaker 01

We haven't, now, this person does say that they have a third gen Taco, they have a, their brother has a quad motor R1T, and a built Samurai, so they do have some experience. Uh, it's possible that if you did, uh, rock trails more difficult than we tend to, that you might need lower wheel speed. We haven't really tested that, but our, on our trail where it's, it's pretty steep and there's some big like, I don't know, one to two foot tall rock ledges you have to get up, uh, I have not experienced the wheel speed being too high. It seems like it works really well. So maybe that would be, come a problem on a more difficult trail.

• 1:18:43Matt Farah?

Yeah, um, yeah, I mean, I appreciate the input.

• 1:18:46Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 1:18:47Matt Farah?

Um, that wasn't, it was not my experience, and it certainly wasn't my experience in the electric G-Wagon, which I think does have low range, by the way. I'm... I am fairly certain it does. I drive a lot of cars, but I really think it has low range.

• 1:19:07Matt Farah?

  Zach is looking.

• 1:19:12Matt Farah?

I think it has 4L because it has the, like, it has, uh...

• 1:19:20Speaker 01

  Uh, it does.

• 1:19:21Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:21Speaker 01

It has a low-range gear reduction.

• 1:19:23Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:24Speaker 01

And can replicate the action of locking differentials.

• 1:19:25Matt Farah?

  Yes.

• 1:19:26Speaker 01

  So, yeah.

• 1:19:26Matt Farah?

Yeah, okay. I'm not, I didn't make that up.

• 1:19:28Speaker 01

  But, I don't know.

• 1:19:29Matt Farah?

Rivian, Rivians, I don't thi- I don't think Rivians do. Uh, barbecue sauce on my, oh, wait, what? Hold on.

• 1:19:38Matt Farah?

  Holy shit, wait.

• 1:19:41Matt Farah?

I, I can't read that. Okay, after driving, okay, after driving the 4Runner, do you wish it had a small V8? Or what V8 overlander would you pick? I have no allegiance to any type of cylinder count for an overlanding vehicle. I, I don't... I don't really see any argument that somehow a small V8 would be better for overlanding than whatever's currently been decided.

• 1:20:11Speaker 01

Depends on the power band and the torque. I mean, because this hybrid assist on the 4Runner helps with that. But for, uh, some context, my, uh, brother-in-law, who I saw in Colorado, he has a last-gen Taco. It's really built. He's done a bunch of stuff to it. Um, if you're into that, go watch his YouTube channel, Info Sponge. But riding in that thing, I go, I ask him, I go, "Does this thing hunt for gears all the time?" He's like, "Absolutely. It sucks." Like, this old 5-speed, he gets like 14 miles per gallon at best. I mean, he's put some bumpers on and stuff, but I think where I'm headed is, the new powertrain is more efficient and seems well-suited and is quieter and has less vibration than that old V6. So if you put a V8 in it, you know, there's trade-offs, like, and it only... It would only help if it was a really torquey, low-range V8.

• 1:20:56Speaker 01

Um, but it also might get shit gas mileage. I don't know. It'd be fun in some ways, but it, it wouldn't necessarily be better.

• 1:21:03Matt Farah?

Yeah, I mean, I, I don't, I've never been like, oh, this, this would, this Turbo Six Overlander would be better if it had a V8. I've never thought that.

• 1:21:14Speaker 01

And by the way, like Vinny, he's gone through a couple Lexus GXs, both have V8s. He drives them on the highway all the time, they get terrible gas mileage.

• 1:21:21Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:22Speaker 01

  They're super inefficient.

• 1:21:23Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:23Speaker 01

So, depends on what you're doing with your overlanding vehicle.

• 1:21:26Matt Farah?

Yeah, most people who are overlanding, if they actually do out the math, they're overlanding vehicles driven on the pavement like 95% of the time. Most of the time.

• 1:21:37Speaker 01

  Mm-mm.

• 1:21:41Matt Farah?

Derek, "I have no thoughts on the Aston Martin Valhalla, we've never driven it. Must drive to have thoughts."

• 1:21:51Matt Farah?

"Sorry kid, FSD had the wheel. Fastest alleged speed while actively smoking."

• 1:21:57Speaker 01

It's a weird question, but I left it in.

• 1:21:59Matt Farah?

Does that mean like while having a cigarette?

• 1:22:00Speaker 01

  I guess so.

• 1:22:02Matt Farah?

I mean, back in the day when I smoked cigarettes, I'm very certain that on our trips to Perump, we sat on the fucking rev limiter of the Raptor at 100, smoking cigarettes.

• 1:22:13Speaker 01

I think it did 112, or something like that.

• 1:22:15Matt Farah?

  No, my Raptor was 100.

• 1:22:16Speaker 01

  It was?

• 1:22:17Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:17Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:22:18Matt Farah?

  It was dangerous.

• 1:22:19Speaker 01

  It felt okay.

• 1:22:21Matt Farah?

It was dangerous when you were trying to make a pass.

• 1:22:24Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:22:24Matt Farah?

And you hit the rev limiter.

• 1:22:25Speaker 01

  Oh, right, yeah.

• 1:22:26Matt Farah?

  At a bad time.

• 1:22:28Speaker 01

  Yeah, surely. I don't know.

• 1:22:29Matt Farah?

Probably, probably 100, I mean, not, yeah. Talking about cigarettes, by the way, this is when I used to smoke cigarettes, like actively having a grit.

• 1:22:38Matt Farah?

Yeah, I can't imagine going faster than that. It's like not pleasant to go 1,000 mile an hour.

• 1:22:43Speaker 01

I don't think, you were not a person who would like put your cigarette, you always had the window down.

• 1:22:47Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:48Speaker 01

So you weren't a person who would like close the window on a vet, put it in your mouth and be like, "Watch this shit," and then you'd go 150. So, you were not that person.

• 1:22:54Matt Farah?

I mean, Dick Trickle must have the record, obviously, respect to the king.

• 1:22:59Speaker 01

Right. But was he smoking while racing, or just during the yellow, the cautions?

• 1:23:03Matt Farah?

I mean, just during the cautions, but that's in a NASCAR, that's still probably 120.

• 1:23:08Speaker 01

I'm not sure, I don't know what they go around at.

• 1:23:10Matt Farah?

Yeah. Yeah, it's probably 100, 120, regular, yeah. He had a cigarette lighter and a pack in his NASCAR.

• 1:23:18Matt Farah?

  Okay, wait.

• 1:23:20Matt Farah?

I want to save Dre from Houston's question, but the problem is I am unable to sit here and come up with a bunch on the fly. I think that's a question that deserves some actual thought, not just like, real time, what can I think of in five seconds?

• 1:23:38Matt Farah?

But we'll save that one, and we'll make it into a topic for a next podcast. Enrico Palazzo, would you rather have a single $5,000-ish switch watch, or 10 $500 Seikos?

• 1:23:54Matt Farah?

When I first started collecting watches, not, excuse me, when I first started living my fucking life, I had one, one nice watch. I had one, yeah, one nice watch. My dad gave me a Rolex. And I looked at people that had 10 watches like they were idiots. I was like, I have one nice watch, it goes with every single outfit, why would I need more? And I was right then. And now I have a whole bunch of watches and change them around for fun, for no reason at all, other than I like doing that. And I was right both times. There's no, there's no right answer. So like, if me, if I was the me of today, but on a budget of 25 years ago, I'd

• 1:24:34Matt Farah?

rather have a bunch of Seikos. If I'm the, but back then, I was perfectly happy and never saw any reason to not have one nice watch for everything. That's fine, too. Both strategies, totally fine.

• 1:24:50Speaker 01

  Have you ridden this?

• 1:24:52Matt Farah?

I asked about that. The, it's the weird, it's that weird looking BMW. Have you seen that thing? The weird looking, the BMW C E O4 is this sort of very futuristic looking BMW scooter.

• 1:25:08Speaker 01

  Whoa.

• 1:25:09Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:09Speaker 01

  Very Judge Dredd.

• 1:25:10Matt Farah?

  Yes, very Judge Dredd.

• 1:25:12Speaker 01

  The second one, wow.

• 1:25:13Matt Farah?

Now, it's almost as expensive as the Can-Am, but it does have the under seat storage, more like a Vespa.

• 1:25:22Speaker 01

  $12,300.

• 1:25:26Speaker 01

It's weird. Yeah, the front of it looks like scooter.

• 1:25:29Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:29Speaker 01

  BMW EV scooter.

• 1:25:31Matt Farah?

  Uh huh.

• 1:25:31Speaker 01

  Huh.

• 1:25:32Matt Farah?

So it's weird looking, and it does seem interesting. I've seen a couple of them around LA. Haven't seen one with a cargo box on the back yet. Still waiting to see that. It's very like designy. And that's cool. It's honestly more interesting than what BMW is doing with their car division right now for the most part.

• 1:25:54Matt Farah?

I'd like to try one. I think they only have the CE02 at the press fleet and it's like, that's like the less good one. I need the 04.

• 1:26:05Speaker 01

You know what? It looks like a snowmobile.

• 1:26:06Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:07Speaker 01

  With wheels on it.

• 1:26:07Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:08Speaker 01

  Alright.

• 1:26:10Matt Farah?

Um, yeah, one or two more and then we will end because I very much have to pay. Jake Shores, uh, wait. Okay. Least reliable but best brands, oh, best brands to least but never own out of warranty. Land Rover?

• 1:26:28Speaker 01

Land Rover, I mean, so I brought this up like Audi got dead last in this initial quality study.

• 1:26:33Matt Farah?

  Uh huh.

• 1:26:34Speaker 01

  So that's not very good.

• 1:26:35Matt Farah?

That's not great. Okay. Wow, Nissan is way right up behind Lexus. How about that?

• 1:26:41Speaker 01

It's amazing. Reliable, but they can't sell any of them.

• 1:26:43Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:44Speaker 01

  I guess.

• 1:26:44Matt Farah?

How interesting. Uh, the very bottom, let's see, uh, the very bottom Rivian is real bad.

• 1:26:50Speaker 01

Now, how amazing is it that Infiniti is fifth from the bottom, but Nissan is second? How do you do that?

• 1:26:57Matt Farah?

Maybe the Nissan, maybe they're built in different factories.

• 1:27:00Speaker 01

I'm actually really bummed to see Mazda that far down.

• 1:27:02Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:02Speaker 01

  I thought they were better.

• 1:27:03Matt Farah?

Land Rover, not as bad as you'd think, but they're right next to Mercedes. Yeah. I mean, I wouldn't want to own any EV out of warranty. Personally. That's where I would start, really. So brand, brand agnostic.

• 1:27:21Matt Farah?

But, you know, I think there's a lot of things that are probably okay. But still, yeah, a Land Rover would be scary. And Audi, or a Mercedes, or BMW would be scary.

• 1:27:36Speaker 01

Sure. And for people listening, I'm referencing this JD Power initial quality study, which is not like long-term ownership liability. It's problems when the car is, I think, was it under 100 days?

• 1:27:46Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:46Speaker 01

It's when the car is pretty new. It's like, what are people struggling with? And I think we read this before, and some of that comes down to like, they're confused. Go back to confusion. They got confused by the screen or something.

• 1:27:56Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:57Speaker 01

But it's a bunch of shit.

• 1:27:59Matt Farah?

  Okay, last one.

• 1:28:01Speaker 01

  Let me do that.

• 1:28:03Matt Farah?

  And it says...

• 1:28:07Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 1:28:10Matt Farah?

  How...

• 1:28:14Matt Farah?

Oh, you know what? I think Sly's question is a kind of a joke. But TST Sugar Daddies, what is the worst road trip snack mistake you've ever made?

• 1:28:26Matt Farah?

  Ooh.

• 1:28:27Speaker 01

  Um...

• 1:28:32Speaker 01

I'm sure I've eaten things that my stomach did not like very quickly.

• 1:28:36Matt Farah?

I mean, I can't necessarily say, like, I've had, uh... Like, the stuff I buy at gas stations is gonna be predictable. You know, I'm buying beef jerky, or like, chips or nuts or something. I'm not getting some weird, some weird gas station hot dog.

• 1:28:53Speaker 01

I bought, this was on a trip where we looked up the law and you were allowed to drink in the backseat. It was on our big East Coast trip in 2012. And I bought, like, a Buzz Ball, like, wine something. Those drinks, they sell those in Costco, fishbowl size. That stuff's disgusting.

• 1:29:08Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:08Speaker 01

But that was the worst tasting wine I've ever had in my life. Uh, that was really grim.

• 1:29:14Matt Farah?

  A Buzz Ball?

• 1:29:15Speaker 01

I remember seeing them, and I guess I should have bought the brown one that's like a mixed colada. But I got that, and it was really terrible. I should have expected that to be terrible.

• 1:29:24Matt Farah?

I mean, I could easily say that drinking, drinking seven cups of coffee on my drive back from Tahoe and having a panic attack, I think, probably qualifies as worst road trip snacking mistake that I have made.

• 1:29:40Matt Farah?

I can't, I can't think of any other road trip food that I've had that literally like caused me to have to stop on the side of the road for like an hour.

• 1:29:51Speaker 01

I, I'll tell a story, it's not mine, but we were filming with, I'll just say it was Thad. And he's listening right now, but we were filming Big Muscle.

• 1:29:58Matt Farah?

Oh, I know, I know where you're going with this.

• 1:30:00Speaker 01

And I bought him like a Monster Energy Starbucks coffee thing, because this was before you could get cold brew like in a can. And we're up on top of the mountain of like the 33, and he drinks this thing and he just comes over, he goes, "I need the keys to the battle wagon." And we're like, "And Muscle and I are like, "What do you mean?" He's like, "I have to go down to the bottom of the mountain right now to use the bathroom." And he looked, Thad looked very serious, he's a very large imposing man, and I gave him the keys and he drove down. And Muscle and I were like, "I guess we'll shoot beauty shots."

• 1:30:29Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:29Speaker 01

And he comes back 20-ish minutes later and he hands me the keys again and he says, "Never buy me one of those again."

• 1:30:36Speaker 01

It was, it was the Starbucks like vanilla latte in the glass, that's what it was.

• 1:30:40Matt Farah?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:30:41Speaker 01

It was one of those things. Never, I just remember, "Never buy me one of those again."

• 1:30:47Matt Farah?

Oh, shout out to Thad. All right, thank you patrons, that is a good one. We'll save Dre and Houston's question for the next show. We love you guys, we'll see you on Thursday. Thank you for listening. Get tickets to our show in Texas today while they last. See you later, bye.
