This is the Keep Hammering Collective, another special edition, breaking news

• 0:20Cameron Hanes?

with Gideon and his Eugene Speedway shirt.

• 0:23Speaker 01

I'm thinking about changing careers and being a race car driver.

• 0:27Cameron Hanes?

Oh, nice. I hear they get lots of guys.

• 0:34Cameron Hanes?

  So that's why.

• 0:38Speaker 01

There is some bow hunting news.

• 0:42Speaker 01

  World record.

• 0:43Cameron Hanes?

Oh, yeah. Yeah. Um, God. So I don't even know. I haven't talked to, so this is a bull Casey Brooks just killed. I think it's like a 490 something gross, 480 net.

• 1:02Speaker 01

  Yeah, something like that.

• 1:02Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. So it's going to be, they say it's a world record. So I'll just say,

• 1:10Cameron Hanes?

yeah, I mean, Casey, he's fricking, he's been bow hunting a long time. He's killed, I think he said 86 or 87 bulls with his bow. I mean, he used to hunt San Carlos too. I mean, he's hunted everywhere. He's killed big bulls everywhere. He's bow hunting for probably 40, 40 years. And he's not like a super high profile as far as like social media, but like people who've been bow hunting a long time know who he is and around here, just because he's out, you know, from out this way, Pacific Northwest. And he's like, I've been at some shows with him before and I just thought he just didn't like me.

• 1:50Cameron Hanes?

I think he's just quiet, but then he called me like probably a year or so ago and we had a good talk and it was all good. But so he just killed, killed this bull and I don't, you know, there's people, a lot of armchair quarterbacks, a lot of critics, a lot of, a lot of people saying, just talking about, I guess this bull had been, there'd been pictures of it like in a driveway or.

• 2:17Cameron Hanes?

I think I saw some Christmas lights in one of the pictures and I don't know the story. So I can't say I know just if you're just being if you if you're just being objective. Elk can travel a long way. So where a bull winters and this might be where he winters, might not be where he lives. So I mean, they can, he can come out of the mountains. Maybe he's like, lives in a wilderness area. I know where the biggest bulls are killed in Washington is straight across from the Wenahawha unit in Oregon. That's where I put in, been putting in for for a million years because that's where the trophies are. And so I don't know if this bull was killed right across the river there in Washington.

• 2:59Cameron Hanes?

And it lived in the mountains and then came down in the winter because this season, this tag that he had, I think it was rifle tag and it went from, I believe, September 1st all the way through the end of the year. So December 31st was the last day. An elk can travel a long distance between those different types, time of the year, the rut and the mountain or before the rut even.

• 3:23Cameron Hanes?

Come to wherever they rut, then come down for the winter and you know, maybe they feed them down there. There's a lot of places that feed elk like, like, you know, where I hunt in Utah, those elk go down in winter in Wyoming and they put hay out for them.

• 3:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:40Cameron Hanes?

And they're as wild as they get up in the mountains. So it's like, you know, people are trying to discredit his kill by, you know, by saying where there's photos of this bull. I don't, I don't know that much about it. I just know like where you might get photos of an animal might not be where it lives. Yeah, it might not look great. I'm, I'm gonna assume that everything was on the up and up. Everything was legal. It wasn't like quote in a city limit type thing. It was outside of that. Maybe it had been in, I don't, I don't know if there's, I don't even know if there's city limits where these pictures were taken. But I'm just knowing Casey has been doing this for so long and he's such a successful and.

• 4:25Cameron Hanes?

Uh, I don't know, a ten year bow hunter. I would assume everything's on the up and up.

• 4:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:31Cameron Hanes?

And he did everything right. And where these pictures were taken, I, he can't control where the animal goes, but he can control where he hunts it. I'm assuming that was a hundred percent legal, just knowing him and talking to him and knowing he's been doing this forever and what kind of scrutiny an animal like this will get.

• 4:49Speaker 01

  Right.

• 4:50Cameron Hanes?

  So, um, yeah.

• 4:52Speaker 01

Yeah. It's like, uh, you know, photographers go to like national parks and they name grizzly bears and yeah. It's, uh, I always think that's, that's weird because it's a, it's a wild animal.

• 5:05Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 5:06Speaker 01

  So.

• 5:08Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. I mean, this, this bull, from what I understand, it's obviously not in a, has never been in a fence. It's free range. Um, and I, I'm assuming it's just the kill is a hundred percent legit. And, uh, you know, you can't really control where a world record animal lives. I mean, yeah, would you want, would it be just if every animal that's going to be world record stature or category or reached that level was in the most rugged wilderness area? And you just had to like bust your balls and fucking weeks in the mountains.

• 5:48Cameron Hanes?

And finally you, you know, you crawl through cactus and over 13,000 foot peak. And you, you know, get a.

• 5:57Speaker 01

  Is this the hobbit?

• 5:59Cameron Hanes?

Yeah. And you get into, you stalk into seven yards as it ra, as it's raking this tree and hit it, hit it with a perfect arrow. And that's a world record, right? Right. And lightning strikes right at that time. And, uh, and then, and then, um, you know, the clouds part, and then the sun shines through. It's like a beam of light. And then, and then God says, congratulations, my son. You've killed the biggest bull in the history of bow hunting.

• 6:31Speaker 01

  And then a rainbow appears?

• 6:33Cameron Hanes?

Right. Yeah. I meant a rainbow right as it kind of the clouds parted. That's where the rainbow, but then, yeah, then the sun and then God. Um. But if a world record animal doesn't live in in that setting, you can't kill it there.

• 6:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:49Cameron Hanes?

So if the if the biggest bull ever killed with a bow lives down and is wintering down where you can take advantage of that. And that's your goal because Casey's killed like, I don't know. At least 10 bulls over 400.

• 7:04Speaker 01

Yeah, I think at 10 or 11 it said.

• 7:06Cameron Hanes?

Right. So and if that's. You're so driven to find just the biggest bulls in the world. And that's where they are. That's where it lives. Okay.

• 7:19Speaker 01

  So be it.

• 7:19Cameron Hanes?

I don't know. I don't know. I don't know what you're supposed to do with that other than yes. You you have to make sure the kill and and the hunt is 100% legal and by the game laws. And if it is.

• 7:31Cameron Hanes?

You can't really control where the animal was, you know, when you hunted or how it was living.

• 7:36Speaker 01

No, I mean, I don't know what people expect him to do, you know, trailer it up and. Take it out into the woods.

• 7:42Cameron Hanes?

  I don't know. I mean.

• 7:44Speaker 01

It was, you know, obviously, like you said, we have to assume that everything was legal and it was. All good. And so I think people just, of course, they want to find something to be mad about.

• 7:55Cameron Hanes?

Oh, yeah. Yeah. I mean, you kill an animal like that.

• 7:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:59Cameron Hanes?

That's why I say he can't be surprised.

• 8:01Speaker 01

You got to find every excuse to, you know, this is why I didn't do it.

• 8:05Cameron Hanes?

He's been a hunter his whole life. He's definitely known how hunters are to each other and how competitive it is. And and the egos involved. So I wish.

• 8:19Cameron Hanes?

I wish I wish it wasn't tainted by these, you know, people can can can kind of throw shade on it because of whatever. These photos out there and I wish that wasn't the case because I wish it was just. Casey Brooks, 80 some bulls, 11 over 400, and now killed the world record. I wish that it was just as as clean as that.

• 8:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 8:39Cameron Hanes?

And his son is is an amazing caller, a world out calling champion. These guys have been infatuated with elk. For decades, dude, decades. This is it. And so I don't want there to be any negativity at all with it. But in this. In this era we're living in. You can, I mean.

• 9:01Speaker 01

  There's always gonna be something.

• 9:02Cameron Hanes?

You can save a little kid out of a burning house and somebody's gonna have something to say about it. I mean.

• 9:10Speaker 01

Trying to think of what someone might say.

• 9:11Cameron Hanes?

So, I don't know, something, uh, what would they say?

• 9:15Speaker 01

You should have saved the cat.

• 9:17Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. It's just, people are crazy. But there are, you know, there are some low hanging fruit with this one that I wish or wasn't. But I'm just gonna, you know, assume the best and assume everything was good.

• 9:35Cameron Hanes?

Personally, I would, it'd be nice if I could have killed a bull like that, like at San Carlos. If that's not too much to ask.

• 9:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:45Cameron Hanes?

Like a 500 inch bull? I mean, is that, that'd be, that'd be cool.

• 9:51Speaker 01

Put it on the wish list.

• 9:52Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, yeah, for Santa.

• 9:55Speaker 01

Depends if you've been naughty or nice.

• 9:57Cameron Hanes?

Yeah, I don't know. I just, yeah, shit, that is, it's a lot that's going on in the bow hunting world these days.

• 10:05Speaker 01

There is, so, we're just adding to it. Gotta love it.

• 10:10Cameron Hanes?

What else did you have? Was that it?

• 10:12Speaker 01

  I think that's it.

• 10:12Cameron Hanes?

  Oh.

• 10:13Speaker 01

Unless you had any other closing remarks.

• 10:18Cameron Hanes?

What do I have? Yeah. Super pumped, Waddell on Rogan. I was so, he, that was such a good podcast. He's such a good storyteller.

• 10:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:30Speaker 01

He's a, he's really funny in camp, too. He is just a great storyteller.

• 10:35Cameron Hanes?

God, he's the best. He's the best.

• 10:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:38Cameron Hanes?

I really, I really like him and Levi Morgan. They've both been top of the game forever. Really appreciate their friendship and, and also what they bring to bow hunting and hunting and the culture in general. And, uh, man, it was, it was really cool to see Waddell get so much love on Rogan, just, and not just because he was on Rogan because his stories and how he talks about hunting is great. And, uh, yeah, it was one of my favorite podcasts that I've ever listened to, so that was pretty cool. But, uh, Yeah, we're just plugging away, knocking out these podcasts and uh, yeah, so that was uh, breaking news.

• 11:20Speaker 01

Breaking news. That's the news segment.

• 11:22Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah.

• 11:23Speaker 01

Maybe we should do a, like a Q and A next. We haven't done one of those in a while.

• 11:26Cameron Hanes?

  Yeah, we could do that.

• 11:28Speaker 01

  Could be.

• 11:29Cameron Hanes?

  So people hit us up.

• 11:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:31Cameron Hanes?

  What am I?

• 11:31Speaker 01

  Get my DMs.

• 11:32Cameron Hanes?

  What camera am I on?

• 11:33Speaker 01

  We're on.

• 11:34Cameron Hanes?

  Seventeen?

• 11:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:37Cameron Hanes?

  Keep hammering.
