Do I get to overexpose you? What's happening?

• 0:56Bill Simmons?

Try not to overexpose you. Chris Ryan's, we're still in CR month.

• 0:58Chris Ryan?

  We are.

• 0:59Bill Simmons?

Rob said on my podcast this week that every month is CR month. That seems to be the consensus now.

• 1:03Chris Ryan?

That's really nice of people to say. I don't know whether that means I've outworn my welcome or what.

• 1:07Bill Simmons?

Just for those of us who choose to celebrate.

• 1:09Chris Ryan?

Yeah, exactly. It's how do you, how do you choose to recognize CR month?

• 1:13Bill Simmons?

Completely. Well, we're, we're 60% through CR month. It'll be 80% after this one. We did a vote, put 12 movies up for vote. You thought Goonies was gonna win.

• 1:23Chris Ryan?

Well, I sometimes think that we skew a little bit older in our demo, but apparently the, the young people, it's like when they voted, we voted for Obama in 08. You know, we took it back.

• 1:34Bill Simmons?

  Who's, who's the we here?

• 1:35Chris Ryan?

I voted for Obama. I'm not afraid to say it.

• 1:38Bill Simmons?

Craig, Craig's excited because it's opening up a whole bunch of last 15 year movies. When these movies do well from 2010 to 25. All the voters were just bots that I made on the internet. I'm happy for it.

• 2:39Bill Simmons?

Nice, guys. Technically, the 10 year anniversary of this movie came out in 2016. One of those, I wrote down, destined to become a beloved cult movie, but tried to be a hit movie, but then it wasn't a hit movie. And then it became exactly what it was supposed to be, which was a beloved cult movie. And it happened almost immediately. It was in the last messages of when people would go to cable and still watch stuff on cable, but the streamers were coming. And you know that this movie is popular because it's on all the time on cable channels. It's always on one of the big streamers. It's just here and it feels like it's here to stay, Sierra.

• 3:12Chris Ryan?

It's got, uh, it's got everything you want from a movie. See, usually when we do Rewatchables, especially over the last couple of months, I've noticed like a lot of the things that I tend to highlight are like sequences filmmaking, moments from the movie. This is, it's all lines. This is a great dialogue movie. This is a great memorable lines movie. It features my favorite Ryan Gosling performance. And he's in the news, obviously, because Project Hail Mary is coming out this weekend, I guess, when we're recording. So it'll be next past weekend when you hear this. And yeah, this is just a like, do you really need to know the plot of this movie? You just turn it on and hang out with it. It's the closest thing we've got to midnight run this century.

• 3:50Speaker 02

It is midnight run, but somehow sleazier. Like it's like we get even grimier, even weirder. And you're right about the lines, but I feel like this is, it's a perfect rewatchable. Cause if you are locked in, the physical comedy is so funny.

• 4:01Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 4:02Speaker 02

But if you're, if you're second screening, the line deliveries are so great. And if you're just like walking around doing chores, you're gonna be like cackling from the next room, because some of the stuff is so big, you can just hear it and react to it.

• 4:11Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it's a chemistry. It's only, it's weird they've only made one, but I guess they moved it in too well enough to bring back.

• 4:17Chris Ryan?

It's such a shame, but yeah.

• 4:19Bill Simmons?

I have a list of movies that went backwards to the 1970s because I think that's part of the secret sauce. Boogie Nights, Almost Famous, Casino, Goodfellas, The Conjuring, Rush, Zodiac, Anchorman, Ice Storm, Nice Guys, Days to Confuse, Argo, and American Gangster. So that is just 13. We've, I think we've done all of those on Rewatchables now, except for Rush, which is on the list. Um, why is it so fun to go back to the 70s? What is it?

• 4:45Chris Ryan?

The cars are cool. It's fun to smoke. Uh, ladies looked great.

• 4:50Bill Simmons?

Ladies looked great. They really looked the best back then.

• 4:54Chris Ryan?

Um, what else do you need? You know, it's like, everybody was kinda like, this fucking government is screwing us over, but like, what can we do about it?

• 5:02Bill Simmons?

Um. Let's get drunk. Let's have some cigarettes. It's okay, you can drive home, you're fine.

• 5:07Chris Ryan?

The burgeoning porn industry, I mean, what else do you want?

• 5:10Speaker 02

I mean, this movie is so cool for exactly those reasons, even though like, everyone in it is aggressively uncool. Like, it shouldn't be, but because of the era, because of the stylings, because of the cars, like, it just kinda works in that way.

• 5:21Bill Simmons?

Craig, I was there for the 70s, so I vaguely remember some of it. You missed it by a couple decades. When you go back in the 70s, what is it for you?

• 5:29Chris Ryan?

The giant lapels, the brown suits. Parties just seeming really fun, no phones, everyone's topless.

• 5:38Chris Ryan?

Guys and girls. There's topless mermaids at parties. I mean, come on.

• 5:42Bill Simmons?

Yeah, we really had it all figured out back then. Um, I'm trying to, what are movies that failed that went back to the 70s? I'm sure there's been a couple and we blocked them out of our minds, but.

• 5:51Speaker 02

  It's a great question.

• 5:52Bill Simmons?

Has there been ones where we go back and it just didn't work? And we were like, why are we doing this? Cause maybe like Semi Pro?

• 5:58Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 5:59Bill Simmons?

  Didn't totally work?

• 6:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 6:00Bill Simmons?

But even that one, I kind of enjoy.

• 6:01Chris Ryan?

The funny thing is like, with a movie like Semi Pro, which I actually like, there's a couple of really amazing scenes in that.

• 6:06Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 6:07Chris Ryan?

It's like, they can't get out of their own contemporary heads enough. You know, it's like, you're always aware that you were watching Will Ferrell pretend to be an ABA basketball player.

• 6:17Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 6:18Chris Ryan?

Whereas like, this like, this just feels like an episode of The Rockford Files, man. Like, with all, like, with more profanity and more nudity and, and better jokes.

• 6:26Bill Simmons?

Pluto's really brought back this decade. They have, I think they might even have a 70s channel, but you can just dive into Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Rockford Files, Vegas.

• 6:37Bill Simmons?

And it really was kinda like this.

• 6:38Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 6:39Bill Simmons?

To especially like you watch like the Charlie's Angels where everything was resolved in an hour. And you would just have these skeevy guys like, uh, like the Russell Crowe character. You'd have good looking women trying to navigate like this, like inherently crazy sexist world. Everybody's drinking and just people have nice cars and they're just driving around LA. There's never traffic.

• 6:58Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 6:59Bill Simmons?

It just seems like the greatest place. The big crisis in this movie is smog.

• 7:02Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 7:03Bill Simmons?

And meanwhile, there's no traffic. They're just zooming down Sunset happily, hopping around at different parties.

• 7:09Chris Ryan?

That's because they also had the gas crisis. So maybe some people were staying off the road.

• 7:12Bill Simmons?

When you were growing up and you're watching these 70s shows.

• 7:15Chris Ryan?

  Mm hmm.

• 7:16Bill Simmons?

But have no context of any part of LA.

• 7:18Chris Ryan?

  Re-runs, yeah.

• 7:19Bill Simmons?

And you don't know where LA begins and ends in your mind. You think the beach is next to Sunset Boulevard and all this stuff. But I was, I, that was the LA I fell in love with. It was one of the reasons I want to move here.

• 7:28Chris Ryan?

I still remember the first time I came here, I, uh, did one of those like, this is how LA, LA is supposed to work days, right? So I went to the beach, then I drove to Silver Lake and then went to a hockey game. And it was like one of the worst days of my life because I spent five hours in bumper to bumper traffic trying to do that. And so it was, it really, you know, it, it wiped away any preconceived notions I had about how easy it would be to get around here.

• 7:54Speaker 02

So how do we go back other than a smog crisis and

• 7:57Bill Simmons?

  Less traffic?

• 7:58Speaker 02

Massive corporate conspiracy. Like how, how do we get it back?

• 8:00Bill Simmons?

It feels like we can rebuild it. When you, when you moved here, what, what was different about LA than, than you expected?

• 8:05Speaker 02

Uh, I think it's as advertised. Like it's as miserable going across town as everyone tells you that it is. I am exactly in the size of bubble that everyone warned me I would be. As long as you're like aware of what's happening, I think it's fine.

• 8:17Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 8:17Chris Ryan?

Every once in a while I'll have an LA experience. I just had one driving over where I'm like, I wish I could have Jack and Holland in the car with me. To kind of like, cause I was just behind a Waymo.

• 8:29Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 8:29Chris Ryan?

That refused to take the left turn. You know, it was just like, well, there's still could be traffic coming. And I'm like, well, we're just going to sit here behind this fucking robot car.

• 8:37Speaker 02

  Disaster.

• 8:39Chris Ryan?

For half an hour. This is insane. And I was just like, I wish those guys were in the backseat.

• 8:44Speaker 02

  Just shooting at the car.

• 8:46Chris Ryan?

  One, one liners, yeah.

• 8:48Speaker 02

This has been my most LA experience is learn, I'm not an aggressive driver by type. The city brings it out of you, but learning that you can bully every robot car on the road.

• 8:57Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah.

• 8:57Speaker 02

Has been a very formative experience for me.

• 8:59Chris Ryan?

Until they turn back the tide.

• 9:00Chris Ryan?

Well, it's true. I'm gonna get my, I'm gonna get my licks in in the meantime.

• 9:04Bill Simmons?

I've been doing a new thing when, when I'm walking around and I see the Waymo coming, I just kinda go on the street a little bit, cause it spasms out.

• 9:10Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 9:11Bill Simmons?

And it's just like, yeah, who's in charge now, Waymo?

• 9:14Chris Ryan?

Somewhere there's a Reddit thread was like, I was in a Waymo and fucking Bill Simmons kept taunting my car.

• 9:21Bill Simmons?

  Ryan Gosling.

• 9:24Bill Simmons?

This was his, so we, we talked about the concept of Oscars MVPs. Where like, who owned the year? We did, did we talk about that the last rewatchables?

• 9:32Chris Ryan?

We talked about that being a new category that we may need to introduce. Because there are certain years where like Spielberg.

• 9:39Bill Simmons?

Actor, director. Gosling does this in La La Land. And I, you know, this, this movie didn't do like fantastic or anything, but two really distinct performances. Really fun. He's one of the first people you think about.

• 9:51Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 9:52Bill Simmons?

When you think about this year, he would have, I think, been nominated for MVP. It would have been his, uh, trying to think about basketball, it's his Cade Cunningham year. Like, please throw me in the mix for your podcast conversations.

• 10:03Chris Ryan?

Does that make pro Jalen Durin?

• 10:05Bill Simmons?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I was thinking about years where you could watch a terrific actor do completely different things in two movies in the same year.

• 10:15Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 10:16Bill Simmons?

And I was trying to find all the times that this happened. The, the funniest example that, that's just like stood out was Ed Norton, who's in Rounders as Worm in American History X. In the same year, like iconic performances, right?

• 10:29Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 10:29Bill Simmons?

He's Worm and then he's the American History X guy. Hanks was Philadelphia in Sleepless in Seattle in 1993. Pretty distinct. And then Leo did Departed and Blood Diamond. Same year.

• 10:41Chris Ryan?

  Those aren't that different.

• 10:42Bill Simmons?

Well, one, he's got the accent.

• 10:44Chris Ryan?

I mean, that is true. Danny. The accents are quite different.

• 10:49Bill Simmons?

And there's other ones that had like big years, like Poitier, big people like that.

• 10:53Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 10:53Bill Simmons?

Cruise had a couple two movie combos. But he's always Cruise. But it's like McGuire in Mission One. Top Gun and Call of Money, Cocktail and Rain Man, but you wouldn't say like Cruz became two different people. Gosling in this movie compared to La La Land feels like two different people.

• 11:10Speaker 02

  Dramatically.

• 11:11Chris Ryan?

Yes, but this is my favorite era for him. It's after his like Angry Young Man opening of like Half Nelson and Drive and some of that stuff. This is like one of the best runs for me in the recent memory of an actor showing their taste. He's working with great directors. He kind of stops at what like First Man or Blade Runner 2049 and takes a few years off and comes back to this era that we're in now, which is like Fall Guy, Barbie, Project Hail Mary. And it's kind of a little bit more happy-go-lucky, here for a good time, not a long time, kind of like vibes. Whereas like this is really like complicated or charming,

• 11:52Chris Ryan?

really, really like, like well tailored to his skillset. And the thing about him that I think is really lost on some of our big young stars now is he's fucking funny. He is so funny. And he's funny in La La Land. I mean, he's maybe not funny in Blade Runner, but he is able to do comedy.

• 12:09Bill Simmons?

  He's hilarious in Drive.

• 12:10Chris Ryan?

  He's hysterical. Yeah.

• 12:13Speaker 02

But in him being a comedic actor, like I think this movie launches him in a totally different way. And I would bet every dollar in my pocket, Ken does not happen without this movie. Like this is him going full buffoon in a way that you need to sell that pitch of, oh, he can be this guy and not just like a smarmy kind of like wisecracking comedian, but someone who's like the butt of every joke in this movie.

• 12:36Bill Simmons?

Well, so you can be funny by how you deliver lines, but then you can be funny by not doing anything, which is a much harder level of funny. And he has moments in this movie where he's funny and he's not saying lines.

• 12:47Chris Ryan?

It's funny when he's just throwing cigarettes in his pool.

• 12:50Bill Simmons?

Right. Cause like when he's, we talked about in the rewatchables mailbag that's coming on Thursday. Oh, it probably already happened by the time people heard this.

• 12:58Chris Ryan?

By the time people heard this.

• 13:00Bill Simmons?

We talked about how good of an SNL host he is. And I think the best SNL sketch he had was when he was like those Beavis and Butthead guys in the

• 13:08Speaker 02

  That's so good.

• 13:08Bill Simmons?

  In the audience.

• 13:09Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 13:09Bill Simmons?

And it was just all facial expressions, but he does that a couple of times in this movie. And, you know, I can't wait to see who we thought won the movie when we do at the end. I, he's obviously in the running, but I kind of feel like he needed this for the IMDb. He'd like one of these, like what we talked about with Crazy Stupid Love, same thing where it's like, I can be like handsome rom com guy, I can be like really funny detective guy, I can be mysterious drive guy, I can be La La Land guy.

• 13:35Chris Ryan?

  I can be Neil Armstrong.

• 13:36Bill Simmons?

Yeah, he's got a lot of, lot of pitches, which I think separates him.

• 13:39Chris Ryan?

Um, he's got a ton of humility because there are other actors who would do this and have three characters in the movie make reference to how handsome he is.

• 13:50Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 13:50Chris Ryan?

Or like, why are you so talented? You're throwing everything away. This guy's just a loser. And the only person who really sees him and is anything else is his daughter.

• 13:58Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 13:58Chris Ryan?

And it's, the movie works because of that. If it was like, oh, he's so hot, he's so funny. It's like, no, everybody thinks this guy is basically a functioning alcoholic who happens at the end to be, become a great detective or like to rediscover his detective skills.

• 14:14Speaker 02

And he has to suck. Like he has to be that kind of lowlife to the point that, like maybe the best moment of this movie is him with his pants down in a bathroom stall like,

• 14:21Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 14:22Speaker 02

Trying to kick the door open and hold it. And it's like the physical beats of that are really hard to pull off. But you're right, it requires you to be willing to embarrass yourself in a kind of way.

• 14:30Chris Ryan?

It's hard to like, be like, hey, you're the big, one of the biggest stars in the world. We want you to take a dump, drop a cigarette in your lap and then get intimidated by Russell Crowe not holding a gun on you.

• 14:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:40Bill Simmons?

We talked about this when we did some Warren Beatty podcasts, uh, last year on rewatchables and we did Redford Month and we talked about the concept of stardom and what stars were willing and unwilling to do. And William Goldman was telling that story about, um, Warren Beatty turning down misery. Cause the guy was crippled in bed and he's like, I don't want to play a loser. And that was like a recurring theme with some of those guys. I don't want to be a loser. I, I get to be the hero. I want to be the guy. I don't want to be vulnerable.

• 15:08Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 15:09Bill Simmons?

Um, Gosling does not care. He's, he's willing to go for whatever. You know who loves Gosling? Craig. It's like your number one guy.

• 15:17Speaker 03

Definitely, of this generation, yes. Because the comedy thing is the biggest risk of any genre I think you can take. If you do a really weird dramatic role, there's prestige in that.

• 15:27Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 15:27Speaker 03

All the other young, great actors right now, Chalamet, Jacob Elordi, and whoever you want to say, none of them are really taking a risk with comedy. You can, Elordi can take a risk with Frankenstein and be in the makeup and do all that stuff, and it's like a pivot, but the specific curveball of comedy is risky now, and nobody does it. And Gosling, to your point, and even when he's on SNL, he's okay making himself look stupid. That's like half the fun of it. And I think Gosling is having the most fun in this movie. And you can even tell how much Gosling loves this movie. To this day, he still does press, when he's doing press for other stuff like Project Hail Mary, he keeps talking about how Angry Birds, the movie, is the reason why the nice guys flopped, because they came out the same weekend. He's like, fucking Angry Birds, man, those birds were just so angry.

• 16:10Chris Ryan?

  So wait, what's your?

• 16:11Speaker 03

  He knows this movie's good.

• 16:13Chris Ryan?

What's your history with this movie?

• 16:15Bill Simmons?

  Late, late coming to it.

• 16:16Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 16:17Bill Simmons?

Saw it, VOD probably after it came out, and then was a slow burn. Just because it was on a lot, and it has a couple really good set pieces.

• 16:27Chris Ryan?

This had a crazy Netflix run, right?

• 16:29Speaker 03

I mean, I didn't see this movie in theaters, did you?

• 16:30Chris Ryan?

Yes, but this would be right around when I was, I also love Shane Black. So like, I have a lot of affinity for Lethal Weapon and Long Husk Goodnight and Last Action, were like the other ones that he did in the 80s and the early 90s, so yeah.

• 16:47Bill Simmons?

  Last Boy Scout.

• 16:48Chris Ryan?

  Last Boy Scout.

• 16:49Speaker 02

And this is like as Shane Black as Shane Black gets, honestly, like purely distilled. I think especially, it's so cynical, and I think there's this kind of like discrepancy in the movie of like, what's the right move versus what's the smart move?

• 17:00Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 17:00Speaker 02

And they're making the smart move the whole time, which is basically to be as crooked as everyone else, and like pull over one on old ladies and beat people up whenever you need. And that like idea that we're all cynical, we're all exploiting people. But then sometimes it's like you get to the bottom of the barrel, and it's like, I kind of just want to do the one right thing.

• 17:16Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 17:16Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 17:16Speaker 02

And Shane Black is so good at that.

• 17:18Bill Simmons?

Yeah, this, I think this movie is like a second or third watch because the plot is so convoluted.

• 17:23Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 17:23Bill Simmons?

It's hard to follow the first time you're watching.

• 17:25Chris Ryan?

  It's a lot.

• 17:26Bill Simmons?

Like, what's going on? There's a tape and that audio show.

• 17:29Chris Ryan?

It starts out confusing and we'll get to it probably in the, in their categories, but like it's unclear if you're just watching it the first time. You're like, wait, so he's following Amelia, but he's just looking for Amelia because she's germane to another case.

• 17:42Bill Simmons?

  And who's Amelia again?

• 17:43Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 17:44Bill Simmons?

So that's Margaret Qualley. Uh, Russell Crowe.

• 17:49Bill Simmons?

A little bit after one of the best actor career ones we had, this 11 year run from 97 to 07. Had a pretty hard career, so some of that was self inflicted.

• 18:01Bill Simmons?

And he's 51 when he does this movie and it's a hard 51. Like he's, he's lived some life.

• 18:06Chris Ryan?

He says it was a character. He said it was a character choice.

• 18:09Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 18:09Chris Ryan?

To pack on a few for this guy.

• 18:10Bill Simmons?

Yeah, he might have already packed it on. I would say, Rob, this wasn't quite his 22 Steph Warriors title. But a little bit similar vibes of like, I'm still here. I'm still really good at stuff. Don't count me out yet.

• 18:25Speaker 02

Yeah, I think he's more than still here. Like this movie doesn't work without his like counterweight to everything. We just praised Gosling up and down. I think you need the specificity of Crowe's performance. I want, I want to save some more about that for later, but I think he's just phenomenal.

• 18:39Bill Simmons?

Me too. I mean, look, him and Gosling are great together. Obviously he peaked chemistry wise the most with Caruso and Proof of Life.

• 18:46Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 18:47Bill Simmons?

We don't need to litigate that.

• 18:48Chris Ryan?

  No, stuff of legends.

• 18:50Bill Simmons?

I, I really liked that he was able to find chemistry with another actor though. After, when you peak like that with Caruso.

• 18:56Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 18:57Bill Simmons?

To, to know that he could still do it again, I thought was cool.

• 19:00Chris Ryan?

Yeah. So like, he just makes some odd choices with what to do with his career. That may be a matter of like what's offered to him versus, you know, what he wants to be doing. I mean, it's more likely now that you'll see him in an exorcism movie than you'll see him in a big drama.

• 19:15Bill Simmons?

He's had a big, like early 60s renaissance. He's moved into this horror film kind of.

• 19:21Chris Ryan?

But he's in Nuremberg, right? That came out this year, this past year. Uh, he's fantastic in this. He's such a great, rough, you know, bully with a heart of gold. And he's the one with principles in this movie, to your point.

• 19:35Bill Simmons?

I'm a big fan of the somebody opens the door and just gets punched right in the face move, I think always works from a comedic standpoint.

• 19:42Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it's, so, starting in 2010, Robin Hood, Next Three Days, Republic of Doyle, Man with the Iron Fist, The Miserable, Broken City, Man of Steel, Winter's Tale, Noah, The Winter Divi- Water Diviner, and Fathers and Daughters. Yeah. That's six years. This was in the running for biggest actor that we had in the early 2000s. It was Simon Denzel, right? Yeah. We talked about this when we did Gangster, but good comeback from him. Also, some really good stuff from the younger actors in this. How do we say, Andre Rice? Is that how you say it? Angori, I think. Angori Rice? Margo Qualley. I like Andre Rice, though. Andre Rice is in this? Syracuse is 2009. But Rice has a tremendous little kid performance in this.

• 20:27Bill Simmons?

Amazing. And if you came out of this movie and you were like, which of these two are gonna have a bigger career, Rice or Qualley? Oh. I think Rice would have been like a minus 300 favorite. She's younger, she was in Mayor of Easttown. Yeah. Yeah. But Qualley, it's funny to watch her in this now, because she's a major, major star. Sure. I'm gonna give Rice the Sasha Jenkins Award for the actor you can't believe didn't become a bigger star, just from this movie. Yeah.

• 20:55Speaker 02

There's still so much time, though.

• 20:56Bill Simmons?

There's time, she's 25. She might be like 19 now, I don't even know. No, she's 25. It's still gonna happen, that's why she can't officially get it. And then, our guy Keith David is in this, CR.

• 21:06Bill Simmons?

  Great to see him.

• 21:08Bill Simmons?

Is it that guy to Craig? I get it. For us, it's Keith David. We're not gonna litigate that either.

• 21:13Speaker 02

I'm glad he didn't go to Detroit, you know? He came back, came back for the second turn in this movie.

• 21:17Bill Simmons?

If you go to Michigan, we're cool, yeah. The Nice Guys took inspiration from Brett Halliday's novel, Blue Murder, which is a pulp book. You have this one? I do not have this one. Yeah. I need to get this for the book collection. Yeah. Try to figure it out. Directed and co-written by Shane Black. You mentioned his credentials earlier. Last Boy Scout wrote. Last Action Hero wrote. Long Kiss Kiss Knight wrote. Created the Lethal Weapon franchise. Wrote all of them. Directed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Wrote and directed Iron Man 3, which was the most successful. Let's walk me through Iron Man 3. What happens?

• 21:49Speaker 02

The first two thirds are actually really good.

• 21:51Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 21:52Speaker 02

The last third is like a bunch of action figures mashing against each other.

• 21:55Chris Ryan?

The kid who finds Misty Mountains in this movie. The kid who discovers her in the beginning is the like star of Iron Man 3.

• 22:01Bill Simmons?

  Really?

• 22:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:02Bill Simmons?

Straight up. Interesting. Well, he started the script for this in 01. It almost became a CBS TV series at some point.

• 22:09Chris Ryan?

  Mm-hmm.

• 22:10Bill Simmons?

And then they changed the setting to 1977 and it fell into place as a movie eventually. TV series, I don't know if that one would have worked.

• 22:19Chris Ryan?

Would have been a little early for the prestige TV run. Like I can see this working, but I don't think you get Gosling and Crow to do this.

• 22:25Speaker 02

  No.

• 22:25Chris Ryan?

Yeah, we'll talk more about what they should have done with this franchise later.

• 22:29Speaker 02

I feel like the TV part is almost more believable than the idea that it wouldn't be a period piece. Like trying to set this in 2016 or 2010 or something? I don't even know what that story is.

• 22:38Chris Ryan?

It would just be guys sitting in traffic.

• 22:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:40Bill Simmons?

Well, it allows you a lot more fun too with 77 because you have way less rules and constrictions. So this movie, 50 million made, 62.8. Barely made the money back. Gosling made the point over and over again about Angry Birds. It also opened against Neighbors 2.

• 22:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:59Bill Simmons?

Which was a reprehensible sequel. One of the, was that when comedy died, Craig? Neighbors 2?

• 23:04Speaker 03

What year was that? I thought it was 2016?

• 23:06Speaker 02

  Same year.

• 23:06Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's bad.

• 23:07Bill Simmons?

Might have been, that might have been the uh...

• 23:09Chris Ryan?

Who were the, who were the additions to the Neighbors universe in that movie?

• 23:12Speaker 03

Chloe Grace Moretz was in it because it was a sorority.

• 23:15Bill Simmons?

Yes. It's really bad. 115 minutes, this movie, Craig?

• 23:20Speaker 03

Yeah, great. I'm not going to criticize this being over 100 minutes at all. This is like my favorite movie the last 10 years, so.

• 23:25Bill Simmons?

  Let's go.

• 23:25Speaker 03

  Good with me.

• 23:26Bill Simmons?

So plus 15, you're good anyway.

• 23:27Speaker 03

Fine, it's so tight. The script is great. I have no notes.

• 23:30Bill Simmons?

Okay. Did we don't do enough about Shane Black? Is he like a top five screenwriter for you?

• 23:36Chris Ryan?

I think he's a hugely influential and consequential screenwriter. And like him and Joe Esterhaas in the 80s kind of introduced this idea of like the million dollar spec.

• 23:46Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 23:47Chris Ryan?

And he is really, really, really maybe the best ever of The Buddy. The Buddy movie.

• 23:53Bill Simmons?

Well, you can tell he grew up on like the 48 Hours type of movies and was just like... This is gonna be my recipe.

• 24:01Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 24:01Bill Simmons?

Just, just wisecracks and action and good set pieces and I'm gonna nail this.

• 24:07Speaker 02

He does break your heart sometimes, though.

• 24:09Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 24:10Speaker 02

Like, they're either big hits like this.

• 24:12Chris Ryan?

  Or it's play dirty.

• 24:13Speaker 02

I, I don't know that I ever looked more forward to a movie than when he did a Predator movie.

• 24:18Chris Ryan?

That really went wrong in a couple of different ways.

• 24:20Speaker 02

  Does not work, unfortunately.

• 24:23Bill Simmons?

Roger Ebert sadly passed away in two thousand sixteen.

• 24:25Chris Ryan?

  You're gonna.

• 24:26Bill Simmons?

  Oh, two thousand thirteen.

• 24:27Chris Ryan?

  Disgrace yourself by asking ChatGPT?

• 24:30Speaker 02

  Don't do that.

• 24:31Chris Ryan?

  What?

• 24:31Speaker 02

  Don't do that.

• 24:33Bill Simmons?

  I did.

• 24:33Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 24:36Bill Simmons?

ChatGPT said, uh, probably three and a half stars for Roger to give him. He said he had a strong appreciation for great comedic performances.

• 24:43Chris Ryan?

I think he would have gone three. I think he would have been like, it's pretty convoluted.

• 24:47Speaker 02

I think Shane Black was right about humanity, just like we are, we are the absolute shit. Just bottom of the barrel stuff. ChatGPTing Roger Ebert's opinion about a movie.

• 24:58Bill Simmons?

We don't have Roger. We didn't have the review.

• 25:00Chris Ryan?

  Oh, my God.

• 25:01Bill Simmons?

I would say three and a half, but I can see the three.

• 25:03Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 25:05Bill Simmons?

But I do think he would have really loved Gosling, and I think he liked these goofy genre kind of movies like this.

• 25:11Chris Ryan?

You gotta really want it with this movie because I do think you're right. On first watch, you're probably a little confused by the plot and it's a little bit more confusing than, than necessary.

• 25:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:19Chris Ryan?

And then it's like the second, third, fourth time around where like it's the line underneath the line or the, the sight gag happening in the background of a scene. Like Janet throwing the bowling ball backwards that you're just like, holy shit, this is so funny.

• 25:33Speaker 02

  Fucking Janet.

• 25:35Bill Simmons?

Well, but then dropping the dead body on the dinner table was funny the first time.

• 25:40Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 25:40Speaker 02

But only escalates. Every time, every time you see Sid Shattuck's body, collapse that poor dinner party.

• 25:46Bill Simmons?

Poor Sid Shattuck. Uh, we're gonna take a break and then we are going to do the categories. This episode is brought to you by Claude from Anthropic. You know that thing where you finish a movie and you immediately have to look up who directed it? What year it came out, how much money it made, suddenly it's one AM. • 26:56Bill Simmons?

All right, most rewatchable scene, opening credits with overhead LA right into a car going through a house. Yep. Pretty good start. Yeah. I think the overhead helicopter shot is really cool, though, of the city. Yeah. How they did that. And I like the house they landed on. There are these like, these houses still exist, by the way. These houses that came like right out of the Brady Bunch. Sure. These, they're mostly in the valley. They're usually one story and very rarely, like you go to a party or you drive by one or like for parents as you, when you have kids in here, like you have some sort of drop off or a birthday party or somebody's friend's house and you're like, oh my God, that house is like out of 1979. Yeah, like they're ranch style or? Always, always the one story. Like sometimes like the circle driveway in front.

• 27:40Bill Simmons?

They have a couple of those in these, but uh, very, very like LA, but I like that beginning.

• 27:45Speaker 02

If you're out there and you got a lead on one of these, hit me up. I would like this house.

• 27:49Bill Simmons?

Rob will live in Encino. The car going through the house wasn't nothing, though. That was a pretty good, uh, what the fuck is going on here? Just a great way to start a movie. Yeah. Shane Black's really smart about like, we'll, we'll grab somebody's attention.

• 28:00Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 28:00Bill Simmons?

Well, then we get a nude scene in this too. If they weren't trying to grab your attention enough.

• 28:04Speaker 02

  I always forget about it.

• 28:05Bill Simmons?

If Van was here, he would be bringing this up.

• 28:06Speaker 03

Even in the background, the shot of when the kid's at the sink and then you see the car tumbling down the hill in the background.

• 28:11Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it's really, it's really well done.

• 28:12Speaker 03

  Well staged.

• 28:13Speaker 02

The number of times I've tried to watch this on a plane, including in the in-flight entertainment, and I just have seen it so many times, I forget about the, like almost full frontal nudity in the first five minutes. And it's like, oh, I am, I am that guy sitting next to a child on a plane, watching the opening scene of The Nice Guys.

• 28:30Bill Simmons?

Well, thank God Van isn't here, cause this would be about five minutes longer. Sure. We'll go to the next scene. Jackson beats up March. This includes the, uh, we're gonna play a game. It's called shut up unless you're me. Good one to say to your kids, by the way. I don't know if you've tried that with your children.

• 28:45Speaker 03

Why did people go see this movie? It's unbelievable.

• 28:50Bill Simmons?

  I like that game.

• 28:52Speaker 02

This whole scene, including like the tic tac toe of Gosling trying to open the cookie jar and get the gun out and then getting punched in the face. It's just like, this might be the most rewatchable scene right out of the gate.

• 29:02Chris Ryan?

  A discretionary revelation.

• 29:05Bill Simmons?

Well, we didn't mention before this scene, he punches through the window.

• 29:10Speaker 02

  Oh, my god.

• 29:10Bill Simmons?

  Slips his arm open.

• 29:12Chris Ryan?

I could watch him react to his bleeding wrists so many times, he's just like, that's a lot of blood.

• 29:16Bill Simmons?

I like when he wraps it, like it's gonna go really well.

• 29:19Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 29:20Bill Simmons?

Tell him you have a spiral fracture of the left radio, followed by the high pitched scream, which is a really funny Gosling. Gosling on the John in the bathroom with the gun and the sig at his pants down. Just hilarious. Great job by him.

• 29:37Chris Ryan?

  It's amazing.

• 29:38Speaker 02

Plus Holly asking Healy to beat up Janet.

• 29:40Chris Ryan?

Yeah, the whole bowling alley scene's great.

• 29:42Speaker 02

  Very good.

• 29:43Bill Simmons?

I just, it's a small scene, but it fucking kills me. And it'd just be my kind of humor, but the little kid on the bike.

• 29:49Chris Ryan?

Bill, this is the most rewatchable scene.

• 29:51Bill Simmons?

  Bragging about his dick.

• 29:52Speaker 02

  I mean.

• 29:53Bill Simmons?

I got a big dick. You wanna see it?

• 29:55Speaker 02

How many categories can this scene win? This kid, this scene.

• 29:59Chris Ryan?

  This is also every time.

• 30:00Bill Simmons?

  Twenty dollars?

• 30:01Chris Ryan?

Fucking Chet. When Chet goes, cost the guy his life and his life's work, really makes you think. Not really, Chet.

• 30:15Speaker 03

I offered to show my dick, cuz I got a big dick. Alright?

• 30:21Bill Simmons?

I love, the kid's perfectly cast too, because he really has that I have a big dick confidence, but he's just this 12 year old on a bike.

• 30:29Chris Ryan?

  No one's named Hat Rack.

• 30:31Speaker 03

Can we give that kid the best fucking acting I've ever seen in my life award?

• 30:33Bill Simmons?

It's very good. It's very good. Dion Waiters, it's done. It's a wrap. Twenty dollars?

• 30:39Chris Ryan?

That kid's like up there with Jacob Tremblay, you know what I mean? Like in terms of fucking young acting.

• 30:44Bill Simmons?

How did anyone keep a straight face during that?

• 30:46Chris Ryan?

I don't think they did. The bloopers in this movie must be insane.

• 30:49Bill Simmons?

Oh, my god. I would've been fucking dying.

• 30:51Speaker 02

  Oh, fuck.

• 30:52Bill Simmons?

Like, how is he just saying this? The big porn party scene, which includes, sweetheart, how many times have I told you don't say N stuff, just say they're a horse here?

• 31:08Bill Simmons?

And then you know why they call him Killer Bees, don't you?

• 31:12Bill Simmons?

They kill ya. Gosling over the deck is great. And the can't speak thing is funny. Everything is great. I love the party. I like how weird it is. There's girls upside down.

• 31:22Chris Ryan?

When he goes up to one of the dancers and he just says, you seem to have a very good vantage point up there. I lost my sister.

• 31:30Bill Simmons?

  Oh, man.

• 31:31Speaker 02

I think this has to be the pick. The party?

• 31:33Chris Ryan?

  The porn party?

• 31:34Speaker 02

  Yeah. It's got the mermaids.

• 31:36Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 31:36Speaker 02

It's got a banging soundtrack. It's got a fight. It's got a death. Like, it really has everything.

• 31:41Bill Simmons?

Roll down the hill. It was my pick too. Couple more. The dump of the body over the fence on the dinner party into the fight scene is good. The hot tub. Shooting through the hot tub, I thought was effective. The elevator scene is short, but it's so fucking funny.

• 31:55Chris Ryan?

I mean, it's definitely the most givable moment.

• 31:57Bill Simmons?

Right before the door opens, he's like, Hitler only had one ball.

• 32:03Speaker 02

Every Hitler joke in this movie works.

• 32:05Bill Simmons?

  They keep going back.

• 32:06Speaker 02

  There's like eight of them.

• 32:07Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 32:07Chris Ryan?

But it was only 30 years prior, you know?

• 32:09Bill Simmons?

He's really interested in Hitler. And then when it's going back down and Gosling's like, eyes like twitching. He's like, body falls down.

• 32:17Chris Ryan?

I love how scared March gets at violence.

• 32:20Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Two more. The Nixon story. When he finishes.

• 32:26Bill Simmons?

So what's the point? There are two ways to look at something. Why didn't you just fucking say that?

• 32:32Bill Simmons?

  And then.

• 32:32Chris Ryan?

But then they bring it back.

• 32:33Bill Simmons?

The auto show, yeah. And then it pays off.

• 32:37Bill Simmons?

  Nixon in the pool.

• 32:38Chris Ryan?

I don't know if this is a good podcast, but I'm having a really good time.

• 32:40Speaker 02

  I am too.

• 32:42Bill Simmons?

Yeah, Gosling. And the fake porn movie and the auto, weird auto show. There's parts of this that almost feel like one of those SNL movies in the 90s, like how it kind of wraps up.

• 32:54Chris Ryan?

  Improv, almost?

• 32:54Bill Simmons?

Like Tommy Boy, like those kind of, oh, now all our characters are a little elevated version of it, but it's effective. So we all agree it's the porn party.

• 33:03Chris Ryan?

Yeah, but I would say if you want to know why this movie is so special, it's the chat scene with the kid being like, cause I got a big kid.

• 33:11Speaker 02

Just let me go. All right.

• 33:14Chris Ryan?

Just because it's like, even that whole thing, they're standing in the, in the ashes of a burned down house, gosling lights a cigarette, it's just like moving shit around and it's just like, what am I doing?

• 33:24Speaker 02

  He's so annoyed.

• 33:25Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 33:27Bill Simmons?

The most, we, we have to change this to the most 1977 thing about this movie, I think, which includes a gas shortage, killer bees in Brazil. I actually remember when that happened.

• 33:36Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 33:37Bill Simmons?

Being little and being like, are we gonna get killed by bees? It was, it was a thing that was a thing.

• 33:41Chris Ryan?

  That was a thing, huh?

• 33:42Bill Simmons?

It was a real thing. A killer with a mole named John Boy.

• 33:45Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 33:47Bill Simmons?

There's some Sunset Boulevard stuff, including the Tower Records, which is gone, but was here when I moved here.

• 33:52Chris Ryan?

  And the Comedy Store.

• 33:53Bill Simmons?

  Comedy Store, Robert Klein.

• 33:54Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 33:54Bill Simmons?

And then the smog rallies, but I think it's John Boy, I think is the winner for this.

• 33:58Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 33:59Bill Simmons?

Cause this would make, like Craig, did you know who John Boy was? Yeah.

• 34:02Chris Ryan?

I would also go for, uh, guys shaving in their cars.

• 34:05Bill Simmons?

  Hmm.

• 34:07Bill Simmons?

The Waltons was a massive show in the seventies.

• 34:09Chris Ryan?

  Fair enough.

• 34:09Bill Simmons?

It's really hard to explain now.

• 34:11Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 34:13Speaker 02

I couldn't tell you one thing about it.

• 34:15Chris Ryan?

  Do you, have you ever?

• 34:15Bill Simmons?

My dad's family watched it. I never watched it. My dad's family was like a big Waltons family.

• 34:19Chris Ryan?

Were you ever an electric razor guy? Like portable electric razor guy?

• 34:23Speaker 02

Yeah. But the number of people who still will walk around just using those things in public, not in their cars so much, but in public spaces, you would be shocked.

• 34:30Chris Ryan?

I like the idea of like doing a lot of shit in your car, like using the, the rearview mirror, cause you're like, ah, I just live in here. I gotta shape up a little bit.

• 34:38Bill Simmons?

He has a big electric razor guy in the car. Caught him a couple of times.

• 34:42Speaker 02

As far as the 2016 part, what about just like an R rated comedy, period?

• 34:46Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, right.

• 34:47Speaker 02

Like this year alone, 2016, we talked about Neighbors 2, Pop Star, Deadpool, Everybody Wants Some, Edge of 17, Swiss Army Man, Sausage Party, Bad Moms, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, Bridget Jones's Baby, Keanu, Office Christmas Party, How to Be Single, Dirty Grandpa, Nice Guys. We get maybe one of these? Like.

• 35:05Bill Simmons?

It's just gone. It's all moved to horror.

• 35:07Speaker 02

A genre that doesn't really exist anymore.

• 35:10Bill Simmons?

The funny thing about all those movies you listen, you listed. My son was eight and then turned nine that year. And I think we watched all of them because he was at that, I'm being dangerous with our rated comedy stage. So this is how I saw all those movies.

• 35:22Chris Ryan?

This one, one of my backup, uh, hottest takes was the action comedy is the thing that most people love. That is the hardest to make, the hardest to make. Well, I can count on one hand, successful action comedies over the last like.

• 35:36Bill Simmons?

You have to nail the one or two actors that are the weeds.

• 35:39Chris Ryan?

It's, it's basically like this and pineapple express and I don't know. Can you think of any others?

• 35:45Bill Simmons?

  Of, of this century?

• 35:46Chris Ryan?

Uh, yeah, of like act, truly an action comedy.

• 35:50Bill Simmons?

Craig's working on a script right now of him and Bellamy and Lucas going to the Oscars together. And things go horribly wrong at the Vanity Fair party. It gets drone striked. Yeah, they need that third act, get that down.

• 36:01Speaker 02

  Hot Fuzz?

• 36:02Chris Ryan?

Yes, the, the, and, and I would say the Kordow trilogy is probably right there. Yeah.

• 36:08Bill Simmons?

I think it'll come back because I think there's too many horror movies and not enough comedies right now.

• 36:13Chris Ryan?

Yeah, sure. More comedy than in action.

• 36:16Bill Simmons?

  You're right.

• 36:19Bill Simmons?

The other guys is hilarious. We put that in the poll.

• 36:22Chris Ryan?

It was, we thought maybe it had.

• 36:24Bill Simmons?

I was hoping it might steal it.

• 36:25Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 36:26Speaker 02

I mean, it might be the best like opening gag of any comedy in terms of, in terms of like the, the, the misdirect of what that movie is going to be.

• 36:33Bill Simmons?

Is it the Derek Jeter thing?

• 36:34Speaker 02

No, like them jumping off of the rooftops.

• 36:37Bill Simmons?

  Right, right, right.

• 36:37Speaker 02

  Yes. Again, unbelievable.

• 36:39Bill Simmons?

The Eva Mendes thing just is one of the funniest five minutes.

• 36:42Chris Ryan?

  Of the century, yeah.

• 36:44Bill Simmons?

You're dressed like that. Uh, the Floyd Gondoli butter in my ass and lollipops in my mouth award for something I just enjoy. A great addition to the rewatch. Do you want me to throw the challenge flag because it's Gondoli? Gondoli? Yeah, you said Gondoli. You didn't bring the challenge flag. We needed one.

• 37:02Bill Simmons?

We did this in the mailbag when I do a mispronunciation. A reader wanted, a listener wanted Craig to actually throw.

• 37:09Speaker 02

  We're gonna need more flags.

• 37:10Chris Ryan?

You say that, I think you would get really on tilt if we started throwing flags. You'd be like, hey, fuck you. I want to host.

• 37:17Bill Simmons?

This hard to host. I'd be kicked off this show very quickly. I, I'm dude, I, maybe two, maybe the third one is the flag.

• 37:23Chris Ryan?

We think Hal can take on more responsibility, yeah.

• 37:25Bill Simmons?

Uh, I have for this, for my butter in my ass award.

• 37:30Chris Ryan?

I think it's better when you mispronounce Gondoli.

• 37:33Bill Simmons?

Floyd Gondoli, I think because I spelled it wrong. Gondoli.

• 37:37Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 37:39Bill Simmons?

Movies that organically end with the possibility that the main characters might reunite for a sequel.

• 37:45Chris Ryan?

  I know.

• 37:46Bill Simmons?

But that's every movie now. No, but it's, they do this in a way where you're like, is there a second one coming? What's happening?

• 37:53Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 37:53Bill Simmons?

It's not like, like Neighbors, they didn't know Neighbors 2 was happening when they made Neighbors.

• 37:59Chris Ryan?

No, they were like, we learned our lesson, it's all over now, yeah.

• 38:02Bill Simmons?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, in this one, it's kind of like, if this does well, do you want to do this in two years? Were the vibes, and it just didn't happen.

• 38:10Chris Ryan?

It's worth mentioning that the research suggests that these guys read the script instantaneously. Were like, I'll do it if he does it.

• 38:18Bill Simmons?

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 38:19Chris Ryan?

And that it was like a pleasure to make for the most part, like, it's like, it is a great shame that they never made another one. And that the advertisement for their detective agency was so great. I'm sorry, you look Filipino.

• 38:33Bill Simmons?

  Or Mexican.

• 38:36Bill Simmons?

Well, we never hear the research where the guy's like, I'll do it if Rob does it.

• 38:41Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 38:41Bill Simmons?

And then they go to Rob and he's like, nah, I don't want to be in it.

• 38:44Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, sure.

• 38:44Bill Simmons?

  No, no thanks.

• 38:45Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 38:45Bill Simmons?

We never get like that in the research. Uh, did you have a Gondoli Award?

• 38:49Chris Ryan?

  Barely functioning alcoholic private detective.

• 38:52Speaker 02

  Hmm, it works every time.

• 38:53Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 38:54Speaker 02

I had every time somebody in this movie trips holding a gun and just like shoots somebody.

• 38:58Chris Ryan?

  Yep.

• 38:59Bill Simmons?

That's how it always works for a movie.

• 39:02Speaker 02

  It's a great bit.

• 39:02Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it's undefeated. Uh, special award, we don't get to give this too much. The Robert Duvall Dressed Like a Priest and Swinging in Invasion of the Body Snatchers Award for bizarre uncredited cameo.

• 39:12Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 39:13Bill Simmons?

Robert Downey is the dead guy.

• 39:14Chris Ryan?

  Sid.

• 39:15Bill Simmons?

Sid, the bottom when he, when he lights the, I had no idea until I did the research.

• 39:20Speaker 02

  Did you guys know this?

• 39:21Chris Ryan?

Uh, yeah, I knew it from, but only from researching in the past of reading about the movie.

• 39:26Bill Simmons?

  Did you know this?

• 39:26Speaker 02

I did not. It's like unmistakable, once you know it, like, of course, that looks like Robert Downey Jr.

• 39:30Chris Ryan?

Yeah, Shane Black basically is the bridge to Downey, the Downe-sance, where he does Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with him, does Iron Man 3 together.

• 39:38Bill Simmons?

And they couldn't get him, couldn't they get him like not, he couldn't get him insured for Kiss Kiss Bang Bang?

• 39:43Chris Ryan?

It was very hard if they did.

• 39:44Bill Simmons?

In the mid 2000s, it was hard to do it.

• 39:46Speaker 02

So if not for Shane Black, the Marvel Cinematic Universe never really happens.

• 39:50Chris Ryan?

And nobody pushes back on Oppenheimer.

• 39:51Bill Simmons?

  Good slapping doors.

• 39:52Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 39:55Bill Simmons?

Well, one thing with this, if I'm gonna do an uncredited cameo in Rob's film, I'm probably not doing one where I have to wear a ton of makeup.

• 40:03Chris Ryan?

  It is surprising.

• 40:04Bill Simmons?

I'd rather it just have been like the bartender, like in the porn movie with Misty Mountains, like just briefly, you see me, not like just covered with a gunshot wound and sitting outdoors for probably two days.

• 40:14Chris Ryan?

Yeah, you're doing a nice shoot.

• 40:15Bill Simmons?

  What's fun about that?

• 40:16Chris Ryan?

You don't want to be the human statue, like hair and makeup for six hours?

• 40:19Bill Simmons?

I would've said no to that one. Uh, what's age the best? We mentioned 70s LA as a setting. Young Margaret Qualley, just what's happened to her in the last 10 years. It's fun to see her in this. The don't say "and" stuff is just funny.

• 40:31Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 40:32Bill Simmons?

I don't know if that, has that caught on in real life?

• 40:34Chris Ryan?

  It should've.

• 40:35Bill Simmons?

All right, maybe, maybe there's still time.

• 40:40Bill Simmons?

Marriage is buying a house for someone you hate. Remember that.

• 40:45Chris Ryan?

  Stupid.

• 40:46Bill Simmons?

Is there still time for high school yearbook quotes? We should probably throw that in there for the, for the kids out there. Russell Crowe in the research claiming he put on some extra weight for Jackson Haley.

• 40:56Chris Ryan?

  That's amazing.

• 40:57Bill Simmons?

I love that one. That's like when Shaq would come back from, from the summer, the Lakers would be like, I put on some extra weight, I'm gonna lose it as the year goes along. It's like, okay Shaq.

• 41:06Chris Ryan?

I lost my hair right when we went on video because I thought it would be good.

• 41:10Bill Simmons?

It's good comedy. Uh, a Crowe bassing arena, did it anything for you? It did not. I have to admit. Well, she's coming up, coming up in later categories. I love, love the original. Uh, this one, I don't know. And then, uh, some Hall of Fame lines that we covered, like shut up unless you're me, I'm sorry you look Filipino, and so on.

• 41:29Bill Simmons?

And then there's a fantasy criteria orgasm in this, where, um, Gosling's doing Lou Costello with the, uh, uh, uh, not being able to talk. That's like a famous 1930s gag. So what'd you have for what's age the best?

• 41:42Chris Ryan?

Uh, seedy Los Angeles. So porn and, uh, strip, strip clubs, dive bars, hotel bars.

• 41:50Bill Simmons?

  It seemed awesome.

• 41:51Chris Ryan?

I loved the setup of the Burbank Airport Hotel, where it's like the flight deck bar. So there's like a dive bar in the first floor, but then there's also like a penthouse bar. Um, I would also-

• 42:02Bill Simmons?

Yeah, a lot of, it seemed like a lot of hotel bars, two movie theaters.

• 42:06Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 42:06Bill Simmons?

Um, adult bookstores and just kinda creepy places.

• 42:11Chris Ryan?

Yeah, it's just a great rendition of it. I also really, uh, enjoy the runners that they have. So like the jokes that keep appearing in the, in the movie. Number one being Janet and just like how much everybody hates Janet.

• 42:24Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 42:24Chris Ryan?

Or also like, is it Janet or Jessica? It's like, God, Jessica's, Jessica's sister is a slut.

• 42:29Speaker 02

Jessica's sister's a whore. Yeah. Also, when, when they're trying to figure out how to wake up Amelia, Jessica's like-

• 42:36Bill Simmons?

  She's such a whore.

• 42:37Speaker 02

We could just hit her really hard.

• 42:38Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 42:39Speaker 02

Yeah. Jessica's stealth MVP of this movie, to be honest with you.

• 42:42Chris Ryan?

But it's like, it, it's just really funny to hear Ryan Gosling talk about kids like they're adults.

• 42:47Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 42:48Chris Ryan?

And that, so that, that is definitely-

• 42:49Bill Simmons?

That's a good What's Age the Best for this, treating kids like adults in the seventies. Cause by the way, that's what we did in the seventies.

• 42:55Chris Ryan?

  He drives, his daughter drives.

• 42:57Speaker 02

No one talks about it, the whole movie.

• 42:58Bill Simmons?

No, you just have a 12-year-old babysit, five other kids, and be out for six hours.

• 43:03Chris Ryan?

My other What's Age the Best is Hannibal Buress as the killer bee in the backseat when he falls asleep while he's driving.

• 43:11Chris Ryan?

  This movie's fucking great.

• 43:12Speaker 02

It's really great. What do you have, Rob? Uh, being suspicious of major corporations.

• 43:15Chris Ryan?

  Yep.

• 43:16Speaker 02

Hmm. Maybe they don't have our best interests at heart.

• 43:18Chris Ryan?

  Hmm.

• 43:19Speaker 02

  Possible.

• 43:19Bill Simmons?

So, it's a big theme these days.

• 43:21Chris Ryan?

Did you guys feel like the catalytic converter Detroit layer of this movie was like a little bit too, it's like, it's like putting a little bit too much garnish on the sandwich. Like it, it's really great. There's the missing girl, there's the porn stuff, there's all this like conspiracy. But then you add on Detroit automakers being the, the main villain of it.

• 43:43Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 43:43Chris Ryan?

  It's all, you know.

• 43:45Bill Simmons?

  Hey, they're going for it.

• 43:46Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 43:46Speaker 02

They are. I like it because it perpetuates humor, right? Like because you, then you get to lean into the smog stuff, then you get the protesters with the gas masks. Cause like, because they're poking fun at it the whole time, like that's why I think it works.

• 43:58Chris Ryan?

And you get Gosling saying, we're all gonna be driving Japanese cars.

• 44:02Speaker 02

I guarantee it. You have any other What's Age the Best? Uh, Gosling himself. I mean, like he was a star then, but he is something else now.

• 44:10Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 44:10Bill Simmons?

  Yeah. Great shot, Gordo.

• 44:13Chris Ryan?

Uh, Keith David hitting the pool deck.

• 44:16Bill Simmons?

And he just turns into red?

• 44:17Chris Ryan?

Yeah. But just that overhead shot of Gosling and him falling, yeah.

• 44:21Bill Simmons?

I like that. Uh, Chess Rockwell Brockley Anderson Award, best character name. We don't always give this out, but we do it. Misty Mountains and John Boy. Just a killer named John Boy was really smart. I like it.

• 44:32Chris Ryan?

And Misty Mountains is like, if you have to come up with a Christie Canyon. Yeah. That's great.

• 44:36Bill Simmons?

  Pretty easy.

• 44:37Speaker 02

  What about Pornucio?

• 44:39Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 44:41Speaker 02

From, I mean, the man from the billboard himself. We see him in the flat, well, in the wood. Like, it's, uh, it's not his nose that grows.

• 44:50Bill Simmons?

Amanda Dobbins Award for Best Piece of Real Estate. We don't get to give this out all the time, but Sid Shattuck's house was the Atlanta home of hip hop producer Dallas Austin.

• 45:00Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 45:00Bill Simmons?

  Also featured on MTV Cribs.

• 45:02Speaker 02

  So a true Dobbins Award.

• 45:04Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 45:04Speaker 02

  And Atlanta as LA.

• 45:05Bill Simmons?

  Full-scale Dobbins for this one.

• 45:07Chris Ryan?

  I like Gosling's house, too.

• 45:08Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 45:09Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 45:10Bill Simmons?

Kid Cudi Pursuit of Happyness Award for Best Needle Drop. We can either go with, uh, Kiss, I Want to Rock and Roll All Night, or America Horse With No Name.

• 45:18Chris Ryan?

Oh, I had Get Down on it, the Cool in the Gang.

• 45:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:20Chris Ryan?

Which is the song playing at the porn party.

• 45:21Bill Simmons?

  The special band?

• 45:22Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 45:23Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, okay.

• 45:23Speaker 02

Plus, we get September at the porn party. Also, I like Al Green closing credits. I like that.

• 45:27Chris Ryan?

Al Green closing credits is awesome.

• 45:28Speaker 03

Bands playing on the roof of a party is pretty cool.

• 45:31Speaker 02

  Pretty cool.

• 45:32Bill Simmons?

What do you have for your flex?

• 45:33Chris Ryan?

Okay, so I have a couple. I'm gonna go with, um, It's a Book About Metals Award for belatedly best quote is at the, uh, Clean Air Protest when Gosling goes, "Which one of you cock and balls wants to pay $20?"

• 45:50Chris Ryan?

I kinda wish you would just, like, walk out into the bullpen of the Ringer and say that.

• 45:57Bill Simmons?

Maybe our new sick of our studio. I'll just do that once a month.

• 46:00Chris Ryan?

Sean Penn, I brought my Opa- back a word goes to Gosling and the He Got Game hookers scene, most awkward scene if somebody randomly walks in is when Holly is watching porn with the adult film actress.

• 46:11Bill Simmons?

  Talking about anal?

• 46:12Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 46:12Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 46:13Speaker 02

  And stuff.

• 46:13Chris Ryan?

  And stuff.

• 46:15Bill Simmons?

Those are good. Uh, Butch's Girlfriend Award for Weak Link of the Film. I don't know. I like this movie. I struggled. I came up with one, but I don't feel great about it.

• 46:25Chris Ryan?

Let's talk this out. Is this movie better, worse, or the same if Holly stays home for like? Half the adventures that they go on.

• 46:33Bill Simmons?

So it's interesting because I had her as the weak link too, even though I liked the performance.

• 46:37Chris Ryan?

I liked the performance and it.

• 46:38Bill Simmons?

I had a different angle on it though.

• 46:39Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 46:39Bill Simmons?

The incredibly savvy thirteen year old girl with the heart of gold. Little bit, little bit movie trophy.

• 46:47Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 46:48Bill Simmons?

What's the purpose? These people don't really exist.

• 46:50Speaker 02

And I think the purpose is to nudge Healy, right, to nudge Russell Crowe's character. Because if she's not around, he's murdering everybody they run into. And so like the turn of the heart of the movie, I think, comes through her being there and him stopping.

• 47:03Chris Ryan?

It is weird that the two people she wants to save are John Boy and Blueface. Which is like, these two guys really almost killed you.

• 47:10Bill Simmons?

Yeah, Blueface tried to shoot her.

• 47:11Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 47:11Bill Simmons?

Yeah. What'd you have for weak link? Did you have one?

• 47:14Speaker 02

I think this is Kim Basinger.

• 47:16Bill Simmons?

I had her in a later category.

• 47:17Speaker 02

She's the one thing in this movie that's like a little off register that kind of takes me out of it. And it's like, clearly she can do the genre.

• 47:24Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 47:25Speaker 02

In this mode, in this kind of part, she sticks out a little bit.

• 47:29Chris Ryan?

It's tough because you wonder whether or not she did like four days on the, on the movie. Because she's in two scenes, basically. And they were like, yeah, here's, here it is. And she had no idea how zany the rest of the movie was.

• 47:39Bill Simmons?

She's in a, honestly, you could give her, I had her for What's Aged or Worse, you could give her in the, let's see, what do we have? The Judd Nelson, New Jack City, I'm in a different movie.

• 47:48Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 47:48Bill Simmons?

She's just, every time she's in the movie, it's another, another movie's happening.

• 47:52Speaker 02

Yeah, I think what makes it more noticeable is Tally, Yaya de Costa, like she feels of a piece of everything that's happening. And so then the contrast between her and Kim Basinger is just like that much more stark.

• 48:01Bill Simmons?

So jumping ahead, we can come back to this, but I had for recasting couch, trying to figure out who would have been a good Kim Basinger part for this?

• 48:10Chris Ryan?

  Oh, good.

• 48:10Bill Simmons?

Because I think, I do think it's got to be somebody who's a little bit funny. But you don't want to go like Sean Young, Ace Ventura, like over the top. But I think it's got to be somebody that's got a little sauce to them.

• 48:23Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 48:23Bill Simmons?

  She just doesn't have sauce.

• 48:24Chris Ryan?

  But who's, who's your idea?

• 48:25Bill Simmons?

I had a lot of trouble figuring it out. Because it would have to have been, they wanted somebody like probably in their mid 50s at the time, right? But somebody that was famous. So it's somebody, it's really like Meryl Streep in the early 2000s.

• 48:40Chris Ryan?

You think Holly Hunter would be too old?

• 48:41Speaker 02

  Hmm, I don't mind that.

• 48:43Bill Simmons?

Holly Hunter is a good one.

• 48:44Chris Ryan?

Holly Hunter, Frances McDormand, not that Frances McDormand probably wouldn't.

• 48:47Bill Simmons?

Honestly, Frances McDormand would be amazing.

• 48:49Speaker 02

  She would be really good.

• 48:50Bill Simmons?

I had, I always feel like Diane Lane could have like needed a part like this, but I also love Diane Lane, so I might be wrong. Sharon Stone, I think, was probably a little too old at this point in 2016, but in the mid 2000s, I think, would have been really good. It's got to be somebody who was sexy, older, but also like had some comedy chops.

• 49:09Speaker 02

Demi Moore? I was wondering about like, do we just, do we collapse the space-time continuum and just make Demi Moore Margaret Qualley's mom?

• 49:16Chris Ryan?

I wonder if she does something similar to what Basinger does, where it's kind of like, yeah.

• 49:20Bill Simmons?

What kind of comedy has she done, though?

• 49:23Chris Ryan?

Are you, I don't know. I can't think of one.

• 49:25Speaker 02

Would it be, would it be too meta to just do Andy McDowell?

• 49:30Bill Simmons?

  Oh, Rob!

• 49:31Chris Ryan?

  Like, it's right there.

• 49:32Bill Simmons?

Wow, Rob, you fucking did it. You redeemed yourself for the Nirvana episode. Yeah, Andy McDowell can do comedy.

• 49:38Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 49:40Bill Simmons?

Oh, that's a great idea. Why didn't they do that?

• 49:42Chris Ryan?

  I don't know.

• 49:43Speaker 02

I mean, maybe this is at the point in Margaret Qualley's career where she doesn't want that too, but maybe if it happens now.

• 49:48Chris Ryan?

Yeah, because they've made a movie since, together since.

• 49:50Speaker 02

  I think so.

• 49:51Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 49:52Bill Simmons?

It's a really good point that it doesn't seem like Basinger knows what movie she's in. Because she's just playing it straight and there's no extra sauce to it at all. I just don't really get it. I don't, I don't get what they're trying to get at.

• 50:04Speaker 02

You also don't know when they filmed it. They could have filmed that scene earlier in the movie and then it got way zanier throughout the filmmaking.

• 50:09Chris Ryan?

Because when you watch the behind the scenes, the making of, like even Matt Bomer, who plays John Boy, is like, this movie is fucking funny. Like, that's something you got to know about it. And Kim Basinger just seems to be like, you know, it's a very complicated story about LA and crime. And I love Shane Black's writing.

• 50:23Bill Simmons?

Yeah, she thinks she's in LA Confidential again. Uh, any other What's Aged The Worst? I had trouble finding What's Aged The Worst, because I think this movie's aged really well. And it's also set in the seventies when it's supposed to age badly.

• 50:34Chris Ryan?

Yeah, the only thing I had was, uh, there is an element of Dead of Thieves downtown Atlanta, uh, to some of the exterior shots of LA. So like, the vibe is always great, but sometimes you can tell like, the streets are a little too narrow, or there's too much, you know, like foliage in different places. Like, when you're watching Dead of Thieves, you can tell that's not gardenia, and like, you know.

• 50:55Bill Simmons?

See, you've seen Dead of Thieves a couple times.

• 50:57Chris Ryan?

I've seen Dead of Thieves, yeah. And they shot this in downtown Atlanta.

• 50:59Bill Simmons?

Do you have any What's Aged The Worst?

• 51:00Speaker 02

  It's a perfect movie.

• 51:02Bill Simmons?

Hans Gruber scale villain ranking? Blueface is like a nine, even though he's barely in it.

• 51:07Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 51:08Bill Simmons?

John Boy's solid. John Boy, I thought, was like, at least a seven and a half.

• 51:11Chris Ryan?

Let me ask you something, though. John Boy, it's like, i- it's kinda like, are you expecting a little bit more, a little bit of Darren Peterson vibes from John Boy? Where you're like, I'm hearing all about this guy getting off the plane from New York, he's the baddest motherfucker ever.

• 51:25Bill Simmons?

Yeah, how come you've missed 200 shots? Yeah. He does miss a lot of shots.

• 51:29Chris Ryan?

He got taken out by two teenage girls pretty quickly.

• 51:31Speaker 02

I've foxed. But he is menacing. Like, he is creepy. And I say this with full acknowledgement, like, look, I don't, I don't wanna put this out there, but I literally have the same haircut as him. So it's not a great energy that we're putting out in the world. Uh, but he shows up and he's definitely, serves the intended effect.

• 51:47Bill Simmons?

John Boy. Great, great name for a villain. Ralph Lohannon, Reuben A. Partridge, overacting award. Blueface dialing it up the whole time.

• 51:55Chris Ryan?

  The whole time.

• 51:56Bill Simmons?

And then Qualley has that one monologue, when she, at one point, she's like, "It's not a porn!" Just like, starts screaming for some reason, so it's one of those two. Rob, you have a flex.

• 52:05Speaker 02

I do. Uh, I went with the Rick Sasseti Guard Meat Award. Most memorable death by a security guard or other bystander of the movie, treats as inconsequential, provides a spouse and kids who love them. Specifically, there is a hardworking out there, actor out there, in, in Hollywood. Got a job. It's not the best job, but it paid. They showed up, they're just trying to support their family. Your job is to be a tree man at this porn party on stilts.

• 52:29Chris Ryan?

  He's a tree man.

• 52:30Speaker 02

And you're just taking stray, like, just takes a stray bullet to the chest.

• 52:34Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 52:34Speaker 02

On what otherwise was like a normal job.

• 52:36Bill Simmons?

Oh, fuck. And your family, yeah. You have a mask on as you die, or a helmet, whatever the fuck he's got on.

• 52:42Speaker 02

Imagine being that guy's wife who then has to explain.

• 52:45Chris Ryan?

Do you think he gets a SAG card for doing that?

• 52:47Bill Simmons?

  Identify the body.

• 52:48Chris Ryan?

  Oh, my god.

• 52:49Bill Simmons?

That's a good one. We'll take one more break, and then we got Hot as Steak.

• 53:54Bill Simmons?

All right, the CR thinks Luke Wilson could have been Harrison Ford in Hot as Steak Award. Threatening to be renamed as the Nirvana was overrated. Rob Mahoney thinks Nirvana's overrated award. What do you have for Hot as Steak CR?

• 54:06Chris Ryan?

We should be actively awaiting the third movie of this series right now and not pining for it when people get interviewed for other movies that they're in. It's ridiculous. This is such an enjoyable movie. You could kick it ahead five years and do like 1982 Nice Guys. Like, what are we doing? Why can't we make more movies like this and more?

• 54:25Bill Simmons?

So you could do mid 80s at least. You could do like Simpson-Brockheimer, height of the cocaine Hollywood era and just.

• 54:31Chris Ryan?

  Also.

• 54:31Bill Simmons?

  Run it back.

• 54:32Chris Ryan?

The. I can't remember the actual literal title, but like, they were like, what we would do is go to Mexico. It would be Nice Guys in Mexico, which would have just been like, come on, man.

• 54:43Speaker 02

I'm still trying to decide who to blame. Like, we know that Angry Birds are to blame, but I'm willing to back it up. Like, Steve Jobs introduces the iPhone.

• 54:51Chris Ryan?

  Seriously.

• 54:51Speaker 02

American civilization nosedives, including the creation of the games that become Angry Birds that then outgross nice guys at the box office.

• 55:00Bill Simmons?

  Neighbors 2, I think I blame Neighbors 2.

• 55:02Speaker 02

  It's Neighbors 2 as well.

• 55:03Bill Simmons?

blame Neighbors 2 for a lot of stuff. Gosling's so famous now that I, I just feel like he could say, hey, it's time, I want to do Nice Guys 2. Are they really saying no to that?

• 55:12Speaker 02

And if he wanted to, he, he could?

• 55:14Bill Simmons?

Like, a streamer is gonna be like, nah, we're not funny.

• 55:16Chris Ryan?

I mean, David Ellison now owns Warner Brothers, who made this movie. Ellison, I feel like, be into this.

• 55:20Speaker 03

  You think so?

• 55:21Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 55:22Bill Simmons?

Yeah, his, his taste seems to-

• 55:23Speaker 02

  He's depraved enough.

• 55:24Chris Ryan?

  Dave's got some edgy taste?

• 55:26Bill Simmons?

I think he likes buddy cop stuff.

• 55:27Chris Ryan?

You think he's like, this chat joke was-

• 55:30Bill Simmons?

It's like, can we get the kid with the big dick again? Uh, what do you have for how to stake?

• 55:34Speaker 02

  Like, we talked about Gosling.

• 55:36Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 55:36Speaker 02

He's on fire in this movie. I think this is the best that Russell Crowe has ever been, period.

• 55:41Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 55:41Speaker 02

I'm sorry during CR month, I don't mean to do this.

• 55:43Chris Ryan?

  More than the insider?

• 55:44Bill Simmons?

  That is-

• 55:45Speaker 02

So tha- that to me is the only real competition.

• 55:46Bill Simmons?

  That take is-

• 55:47Chris Ryan?

George, you're really good at this.

• 55:51Speaker 02

  So he is-

• 55:51Bill Simmons?

  Oh my god.

• 55:52Speaker 02

He is the action star of this movie. Like, he is in every fight, he is in every shootout. He is genuinely hilarious in terms of, like, he's getting a chance to play a role he's never allowed to play, which is this sort of comedic role. And he's the beating heart that like, rounds out the whole movie and makes it, to me, a rewatchable. Like, if this is just depraved and funny, that's nice and you move on, but it's like, it does have a feel-good element that comes from him. And I think he is the piece that kind of brings it all together in a way that even Gosling doesn't.

• 56:21Bill Simmons?

It's hard for me to get too mad at that when I think Proof of Life was his apex.

• 56:25Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 56:26Bill Simmons?

Um, interesting take, though. I, I think what's missing is like, there was a time, like way earlier when, uh, you know, he was a really handsome, like, leading man, but also, like Gladiator, Russell Crowe.

• 56:38Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 56:39Bill Simmons?

I just don't think there's a lot of people who could have been Gladiator, Russell Crowe.

• 56:42Speaker 02

  You don't think so?

• 56:43Bill Simmons?

  No, I don't.

• 56:44Speaker 02

I think he kinda gets dog walked by Joaquin in that movie, to be honest with you.

• 56:47Chris Ryan?

  Really?

• 56:48Speaker 02

Like, he's, he's good, he's really good in it.

• 56:50Chris Ryan?

Dog walked? They're only in two scenes together.

• 56:53Speaker 02

No, but in terms of like, who is owning the presence of that movie? He, like, and so, look, a lot of it's just character. He's playing a pretty straightforward, like, hero's journey, go and fight the big fight, like Avenger family, all of that stuff.

• 57:04Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 57:05Speaker 02

There's not a lot for him to do that's exciting, and he holds it, and he's good in it, and, but like, should he have won Best Actor for Gladiator?

• 57:13Bill Simmons?

Did he win for that one or Beautiful Mind?

• 57:15Chris Ryan?

He won for both, didn't he?

• 57:16Bill Simmons?

  No, he only won one.

• 57:17Speaker 02

I think he, I think he won for Gladiator.

• 57:18Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, he won for Gladiator.

• 57:21Bill Simmons?

I don't know. Maximus was pretty great.

• 57:23Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 57:23Bill Simmons?

What do you stand on this, Craig? Are you Gladiator guy, Greg?

• 57:26Chris Ryan?

Um, I'm closer to Rob on this, to be honest, about Gladiator and, and Crowe.

• 57:30Bill Simmons?

  Wow.

• 57:31Chris Ryan?

  It's a traditional role.

• 57:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 57:32Chris Ryan?

  It's a little limited. It's a generational thing, I don't know.

• 57:35Speaker 02

I do think Insider is, that's the one.

• 57:37Chris Ryan?

When he's like, on my command, unleash hell, you're not like, let's go, let's do it.

• 57:41Speaker 02

I'm like, let's go, but could you plug another actor in and say the same thing? I'd still be like, let's go? I think I would.

• 57:46Chris Ryan?

He, he only won for Gladiator, not Beautiful Mind.

• 57:48Bill Simmons?

Yeah. I feel like Concepcion's gonna just dive through the window right now, attack Rob.

• 57:54Bill Simmons?

My hottest take was also Russell Crowe related. I think he was the Shaquille O'Neal of actors.

• 58:00Bill Simmons?

Hall of Fame potential. You could see it early in the nineties, right? This guy, something's gonna happen. Even goes head to head with Denzel. Career apex from 2000 to 2002, just like Shaq. Three Finals MVPs for Shaq. Three Best Actor nominations in a row and a win for Russ.

• 58:16Speaker 02

  Crazy.

• 58:17Bill Simmons?

Should've won a couple more MVPs, kinda didn't totally want it, went a little sideways, couldn't really stay in his shape, which was like a Shaq thing. I think Nice Guys and the Miami title as the sidekick with Wade.

• 58:31Chris Ryan?

  That's a really good one.

• 58:32Bill Simmons?

Like a combo of that, and I still think he's a Pantheon guy from the last 50 years, but I feel like he left a little on the table. It's, it's an 11-year run, I felt like it could have been longer.

• 58:42Chris Ryan?

Tease this analogy out. That means last night, Russell Crowe went live right after the Oscars, he was like, Michael B. Jordan, mate, could've done a little bit more to impress me. Playing twins, I did that.

• 58:56Chris Ryan?

I did that and we didn't even have special effects.

• 59:00Speaker 02

You forgot budding musical careers too.

• 59:02Chris Ryan?

  Oh, that's right.

• 59:02Speaker 02

You know, very important part of both of their stories.

• 59:04Chris Ryan?

Kind of has a little bit of the Billy Bob Thornton, like, kinda more interested in rocking out than, than acting, maybe?

• 59:09Speaker 02

  Who to blame him?

• 59:10Chris Ryan?

  I know.

• 59:10Bill Simmons?

  Yeah. Casting what ifs? None.

• 59:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:13Bill Simmons?

It's too early, the movie just came out.

• 59:15Chris Ryan?

And also, would you really change that much, other than bassing her?

• 59:18Bill Simmons?

The big one, the big one was that the mailing the scripts to the two guys and then being like, I'm in if he's in, which doesn't really seem to happen that often. Best that guy award, for the casuals, Keith David.

• 59:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:28Bill Simmons?

  Stealth. Bo Napp?

• 59:30Chris Ryan?

  Mm-hmm.

• 59:31Bill Simmons?

  Who plays Blueface?

• 59:32Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 59:33Bill Simmons?

He's one of those guys? I didn't even know where he's from.

• 59:35Chris Ryan?

I had Lois Smith, uh, as the old lady with the coke bottle glasses.

• 59:38Speaker 02

  Hmm, on Meg from Twister.

• 59:40Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 59:41Bill Simmons?

  Oh, that's who that was?

• 59:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:43Bill Simmons?

  That's a good one.

• 59:44Speaker 02

I do think, uh, Bo, is Bo Napp not just doing Sacha Baron Cohen as Blueface? Is that not like the energy he's projecting?

• 59:50Chris Ryan?

I still to this day, every time this movie comes on, I was like, is Sacha Baron Cohen in this movie?

• 59:54Speaker 02

  Apparently not.

• 59:55Bill Simmons?

Dion Waiters. Muriel Tello is Misty Mountains. Blueface. Could keep going, but it's the little kid with the big dick.

• 1:00:04Chris Ryan?

  It's Ames Lance Valentine.

• 1:00:06Bill Simmons?

Is that what his, this is his name is?

• 1:00:10Bill Simmons?

He's only in one scene, right?

• 1:00:12Chris Ryan?

  Perfect Dion.

• 1:00:13Bill Simmons?

Legendary Dion performance. We did recast in Couch, unless you guys have anything else for that? Uh, oh, Craig, you have a flex?

• 1:00:20Speaker 03

So, I created a new category. I, I just think no one knows how to open a movie and set the tone quite like Shane Black. And it made me think of when Kobe Bryant plowed through Pau Gasol.

• 1:00:29Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:00:30Speaker 03

On the redeemed team, which is like Misty Mountains plowing through the bill, the, the, the home to start this movie.

• 1:00:34Chris Ryan?

  Exactly like that.

• 1:00:35Speaker 03

And if you go back and you look through Shane Black's movies, Lethal Weapon starts with the naked stripper ju, committing suicide off the hotel.

• 1:00:41Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:42Speaker 03

Last Boy Scout starts with the, the football player pulls out the pistol, shoots the guy before scoring the touchdown, and you have this movie. So I think it's the Kobe Bryant shoving Pau Gasol award for the best tone-setting opening move, and Shane Black has the belt right now.

• 1:00:55Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 1:00:56Speaker 03

He's also just like, if you read his scripts, they grab you by the lapel.

• 1:00:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:01:00Speaker 03

They're like, keep reading. Also, I love when an opening scene, I guess this is my gondoli, I love when an opening scene has characters that aren't involved with the rest of the movie.

• 1:01:06Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:01:07Speaker 03

It's just like a tight, like, like a cold.

• 1:01:10Chris Ryan?

  Package, yes, yeah.

• 1:01:11Speaker 02

There's so many of those throughout this movie too, like the two women who walk by at the porn party being like, well, if he wanted me to do that, he shouldn't have eaten the asparagus. It's just like, that's happening constantly in this movie.

• 1:01:20Speaker 03

  They're great at it.

• 1:01:23Bill Simmons?

Half ass in research, not a lot at this point. We had the Atlanta thing. Russell Crowe said it was one of two films where he wished there was a sequel. Said this on Howard Stern. The other was L.A. Confidential. Which ironically, we're doing next week here on the Rewatchables.

• 1:01:37Chris Ryan?

  Unintentional that this happened.

• 1:01:39Bill Simmons?

The book Holly was reading from is called A Cat Among the Pigeons by Agatha Christie. That was really all, otherwise we mentioned.

• 1:01:47Speaker 02

I did like, you mentioned the Abbott and Costello thing earlier with Gosling. And the part of it that I liked was, the reason he got into Abbott and Costello is because his parents wouldn't pay for Blockbuster. So the only movies he could get were from the public library, found Abbott and Costello.

• 1:02:00Chris Ryan?

  Interesting.

• 1:02:01Bill Simmons?

Apex Mountain, Crowe, I guess for Rob and nobody else.

• 1:02:05Speaker 02

  For me personally.

• 1:02:07Bill Simmons?

Gosling with this in La La Land. I think we're here.

• 1:02:10Chris Ryan?

This is the definition of it, right?

• 1:02:11Bill Simmons?

It's not quite Wang Chung Apex Mountain, but it's Apex Mountain.

• 1:02:16Speaker 02

  Again, I'm perpetually.

• 1:02:17Bill Simmons?

You missed the Wang Chung combo in the last episode.

• 1:02:19Speaker 02

Well, I'm just confused by this category regardless of any Wang Chung happening.

• 1:02:22Bill Simmons?

Wang Chung's 1985 was the all time Apex Mountain that's ever happened.

• 1:02:26Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:27Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:27Speaker 02

It's the apex of Apex Mountains?

• 1:02:28Bill Simmons?

It's Wang, it's now Wang Chung's Apex Mountain, like the SoFi Stadium. Yeah.

• 1:02:32Speaker 02

  I'm glad for the branding.

• 1:02:33Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:35Speaker 02

Does he not have like more cachet post Barbie than after La La Land?

• 1:02:39Chris Ryan?

This gets into, what kind of Apex Mountain, what kind of mountain do you like being on? Is it when it seems like it's all out in front of you or are you just at the height of your earning potential?

• 1:02:48Bill Simmons?

We had a, in the mailbag, we had a mathematician write in about the post Apex. You can actually, it's kind of the, you've still got it. Combined with maybe you were higher, but it wasn't quite Apex Mountain, but it was like, you actually, it was like the curry 2022, basically.

• 1:03:04Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:05Bill Simmons?

So Barbie was probably that for Gosling.

• 1:03:07Chris Ryan?

Do you think you'll go see Project Hail Mary?

• 1:03:09Bill Simmons?

My son wants to see it, so it's in play.

• 1:03:11Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:03:12Bill Simmons?

But then he'll be like, yeah, I saw it last night with my girlfriend, sorry.

• 1:03:16Speaker 02

What's the hold of, just the sci fi? That's what's keeping you out?

• 1:03:18Bill Simmons?

No, I want to see it. There's really good buzz on it.

• 1:03:20Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:21Bill Simmons?

  You haven't seen it, right?

• 1:03:22Chris Ryan?

  I'm seeing it tonight.

• 1:03:22Bill Simmons?

  Nice.

• 1:03:23Chris Ryan?

  Two hours and 45 minutes.

• 1:03:24Bill Simmons?

Oh, look at the big boy. What does he say?

• 1:03:27Chris Ryan?

Look at the big brain of it.

• 1:03:30Bill Simmons?

Man, I fucked that up. Apex Mountain for 1977? Just in general is the greatest year we've ever produced as in the world.

• 1:03:38Chris Ryan?

  I was bored that year.

• 1:03:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:03:39Bill Simmons?

  What a great year.

• 1:03:39Speaker 02

  Star Wars.

• 1:03:40Bill Simmons?

Pretty good. A lot of good stuff. Reggie Jackson.

• 1:03:42Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:45Bill Simmons?

Keith David fight scenes? Sadly, no. It's still They Live.

• 1:03:49Speaker 02

  That's an amazing one though.

• 1:03:50Bill Simmons?

Wasn't him in They Live? No.

• 1:03:50Speaker 02

  No, that's not him.

• 1:03:52Bill Simmons?

  Xavier Brooks?

• 1:03:53Speaker 02

  You're talking in the alley?

• 1:03:54Bill Simmons?

Did I just do the thing where I confused Keith David and Avery Brooks?

• 1:03:57Speaker 02

Wait, Keith David is in They Live.

• 1:03:59Chris Ryan?

Yeah, Keith David's in They Live.

• 1:03:59Bill Simmons?

It was Keith David. Why'd you just look at me like I was crazy?

• 1:04:01Chris Ryan?

  I didn't. He said something.

• 1:04:02Bill Simmons?

  Keith David and Roddy Piper.

• 1:04:04Speaker 02

It was him, Bill, not me. First of all, I didn't say anything. You second guessed yourself.

• 1:04:08Bill Simmons?

I did. I second guessed myself.

• 1:04:09Chris Ryan?

It's Keith David in They Live. Keith David is in the thing.

• 1:04:11Speaker 02

  That's still the winner, yes.

• 1:04:12Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:04:13Bill Simmons?

  Shane Black? Probably.

• 1:04:15Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 1:04:15Bill Simmons?

  Iron Man 3?

• 1:04:17Chris Ryan?

I mean, Iron Man 3, but nothing kind of happened after that. I would say writing Lethal Weapon.

• 1:04:21Speaker 02

One of the lethal weapons, I would think.

• 1:04:22Chris Ryan?

And being like one of the most successful.

• 1:04:23Speaker 02

  So Lethal Weapon 1?

• 1:04:24Chris Ryan?

Is his apex mountain, I think.

• 1:04:27Bill Simmons?

  Angurie Rice?

• 1:04:28Speaker 02

  I hope not.

• 1:04:29Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:30Bill Simmons?

Too early to say. Qualy, too early to say. Dad-daughter movies, probably not.

• 1:04:35Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 1:04:35Bill Simmons?

Basinger, no. The 1978 Auto Show, I think it might have been.

• 1:04:39Chris Ryan?

  For sure.

• 1:04:40Bill Simmons?

Yeah, not a lot of talk about that show other than this. John Boy and the Waltons, probably still the Waltons.

• 1:04:46Chris Ryan?

  I think so.

• 1:04:46Bill Simmons?

Which was the number one show for like five years.

• 1:04:48Chris Ryan?

More than the nice guys? Yeah.

• 1:04:49Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:49Speaker 02

  Fair.

• 1:04:50Bill Simmons?

Breaking a Window Going Wrong? Might have been the, might have been the peak.

• 1:04:55Chris Ryan?

I can't think of another example.

• 1:04:57Speaker 02

As funny as it gets, for sure.

• 1:04:58Bill Simmons?

1967 Red Mustangs with a white convertible top?

• 1:05:01Chris Ryan?

  Yep.

• 1:05:02Bill Simmons?

  For a movie? Pretty good.

• 1:05:03Chris Ryan?

  Retro porn portraits?

• 1:05:06Bill Simmons?

  Boogiedads.

• 1:05:07Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:08Bill Simmons?

  Cruiser Hanks?

• 1:05:09Speaker 02

  Cruise as John Boy.

• 1:05:12Bill Simmons?

  Oh, interesting.

• 1:05:13Speaker 02

He just shows, you don't, you don't see him.

• 1:05:15Bill Simmons?

With like a bad wig? He has like five lines?

• 1:05:16Chris Ryan?

It would have been better if he would play Shattuck.

• 1:05:18Speaker 02

Shattuck would be funny too. Yeah, Cruise in one of these supporting parts who you hear about and then just shows up?

• 1:05:24Bill Simmons?

Could Hanks have been Russell Crowe's character?

• 1:05:26Chris Ryan?

I had Hanks for Hall and March at a different time in his life.

• 1:05:29Bill Simmons?

  Oh.

• 1:05:29Chris Ryan?

It's kind of like right after Punchline.

• 1:05:30Bill Simmons?

  Late 80s? Yeah, late 80s.

• 1:05:32Speaker 02

  Yes, he could do that.

• 1:05:34Bill Simmons?

I like Cruise for John Boy. I think that has my vote.

• 1:05:36Speaker 02

  It'd be fun.

• 1:05:37Bill Simmons?

  You down with that, Craig?

• 1:05:38Chris Ryan?

But the official winner we're saying is Hanks for the lead role.

• 1:05:41Speaker 02

Yeah, Hanks. In terms of a lead role.

• 1:05:43Bill Simmons?

  Scorsese or Spielberg? Clearly Scorsese.

• 1:05:46Chris Ryan?

  Definitely.

• 1:05:47Bill Simmons?

Way more coke at the party.

• 1:05:48Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:05:48Bill Simmons?

And we probably would have had, I don't know, tops from the Rolling Stones.

• 1:05:52Chris Ryan?

No, no daughter, because you just want to get way darker, way more fucked up. Yeah.

• 1:05:56Speaker 02

Has Spielberg ever done something like as getting his hands dirty as this? I can't think of anything.

• 1:06:02Bill Simmons?

Best hang, worst hang? I mean, ironically, Gosling's daughter in this movie is probably the best hang of all these people. Blueface is the worst hang. Blueface, tough cross-country drive.

• 1:06:12Chris Ryan?

Blueface would be awful. I would spend the night hanging out with Gosling in a bar. That'd be a lot of fun.

• 1:06:18Speaker 02

I would hang out with Amelia. Like, I am one legal substance away from being very on board to her, like, big speech about her mom and like, Mammon is her god.

• 1:06:26Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:27Speaker 02

I'm on board for that. Worst hang, Chet.

• 1:06:31Bill Simmons?

  Chet.

• 1:06:32Chris Ryan?

  I like Chet.

• 1:06:35Bill Simmons?

  Talk about the projector.

• 1:06:37Speaker 02

  I'm in the industry, I'm a projectionalist.

• 1:06:39Chris Ryan?

  I'm a projectionalist.

• 1:06:41Bill Simmons?

Come on, guy. Picking nits, 13-year-old kids driving. I'm not even sure this was happening in 1977, to be honest.

• 1:06:47Chris Ryan?

  Especially with manual steering.

• 1:06:49Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, that was.

• 1:06:50Chris Ryan?

That would have been tough. Do you have the upper body strength to control a car like that?

• 1:06:53Bill Simmons?

It's a choice. How did Amelia land on their car and not, like, die immediately? How far did she fall? I just have questions about that.

• 1:07:00Chris Ryan?

No, they, they, the camera kind of pans up. There's a fire escape. She climbs down.

• 1:07:03Speaker 02

She climbs down and hops down.

• 1:07:04Bill Simmons?

  She jumps.

• 1:07:06Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, it's probably a 15-foot jump.

• 1:07:08Speaker 02

But she is putting in a lot of mileage in this movie barefoot.

• 1:07:11Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:11Speaker 02

Like, just running all over the city.

• 1:07:13Bill Simmons?

And I think that dress is probably a lot more banged up after three days. I think there's probably some coffee on it and all kinds of things. How did they so easily get into Misty Mountain's house a couple of days after the murder? And why was all the evidence just still sitting there?

• 1:07:28Speaker 02

Well, they have her aunt with them.

• 1:07:29Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:29Bill Simmons?

I know, but wouldn't they have picked up, like... Specific evidence of people that were in her life and brought it, or did that just not how they did in 1977?

• 1:07:37Speaker 02

I mean, there was a handwritten note from Chet just sitting there.

• 1:07:40Bill Simmons?

Yeah, wouldn't they have brought that into the station?

• 1:07:42Chris Ryan?

This also gets into just a complete absence of cops in this movie.

• 1:07:46Speaker 02

They show up a couple of times.

• 1:07:48Chris Ryan?

Way after the fact and never detaining.

• 1:07:50Speaker 02

  Right, that's true.

• 1:07:51Chris Ryan?

Uh, Jackson and March, despite the fact that there's like seven dead bodies.

• 1:07:54Speaker 02

How do they never go to prison in this movie?

• 1:07:55Chris Ryan?

I don't know. That could have been Nice Guys 3, going to jail.

• 1:08:01Bill Simmons?

He can't smell. They joke. Did you know what a nose mea was?

• 1:08:05Chris Ryan?

I did not. Was that real?

• 1:08:07Bill Simmons?

Uh, who knows if that's real or not, but, um, his daughter kinda says, this is why mom died, cause he couldn't smell.

• 1:08:14Chris Ryan?

Oh, cause of the gas leak, yeah.

• 1:08:15Bill Simmons?

But you can't smell a gas leak, I don't think.

• 1:08:18Speaker 02

I, I still enjoyed it. To me, that's the very like Gremlins to my dad died coming down the chimney as Santa, kind of like weird anecdote into tragic backstory that I can definitely appreciate.

• 1:08:30Bill Simmons?

I have one more, but what, did you have any nitpicks?

• 1:08:32Chris Ryan?

No, we kinda hit most of them with What's Age of the Worst. I think that the thing I would nitpick the most at is the slightly like convoluted plot, like, like that kinda thing with like, obviously she saw the movie that they were watching, which means there's another movie, which means we have to go.

• 1:08:46Bill Simmons?

She was watching it on the wall.

• 1:08:48Speaker 02

I think Healy pulling together the whole case because he saw a suit on a rack in the office that one time.

• 1:08:55Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:08:55Speaker 02

Is like maybe a bit much, but it feeds into something I really like about this movie, which is they basically never catch a break because they're good. They basically always catch a break because they're lucky. Like Amelia literally falls on their car and that kinda stuff is happening constantly.

• 1:09:08Chris Ryan?

And there's, there's a lack of heroism in the movie in the sense that like, they don't save Amelia.

• 1:09:12Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:09:13Chris Ryan?

She's very unceremoniously dispatched by John.

• 1:09:16Bill Simmons?

That was one of the things I liked was it's, it's really is shocking when she gets shot.

• 1:09:19Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:20Speaker 02

But it's that kinda movie. It's the kinda movie where not only is she gonna get shot, it's not gonna cut away. Like you were just gonna see her in cold blood, get murdered and left in the street.

• 1:09:28Chris Ryan?

It's also good cause it, it, it makes like Angore Rice's character being present for all of it, a little bit more dangerous, cause like that can happen retroactively.

• 1:09:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:09:37Bill Simmons?

This is my big one. Craig, this is, this is why I'm a Hall of Famer, this next nitpick.

• 1:09:43Bill Simmons?

Gosling twice in the movie is in a body of water.

• 1:09:48Bill Simmons?

And then smokes a cigarette like five minutes later. Those cigarettes are wet.

• 1:09:51Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:09:52Bill Simmons?

  Not lighting. No chance.

• 1:09:54Chris Ryan?

  Oh, his pack.

• 1:09:54Bill Simmons?

Yeah, his pack in his pocket. Done.

• 1:09:56Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:57Bill Simmons?

  It's a wrap. That thing's not lighting.

• 1:09:58Speaker 02

So he's in the tank with the mermaids, but he's like in boxers in that. What's the second body of water?

• 1:10:03Chris Ryan?

When he falls into the pool.

• 1:10:04Bill Simmons?

  Falls in the pool.

• 1:10:05Speaker 02

Oh, the pool. Oh, yeah, that one is cooked.

• 1:10:07Bill Simmons?

There's no fucking way he's lighting the cigarette.

• 1:10:09Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:09Bill Simmons?

So that whole pack's a wrap. It's all, they're soggy. They're falling apart.

• 1:10:13Speaker 02

  But they'll sometimes, sometimes.

• 1:10:14Bill Simmons?

That's why we need the cigarette consultancy company.

• 1:10:16Speaker 02

  You just win.

• 1:10:17Bill Simmons?

That's true. Sometimes you just win.

• 1:10:19Chris Ryan?

  And also, he can't die.

• 1:10:20Speaker 02

  Can't. That's the revelation.

• 1:10:23Bill Simmons?

Sequel, prequel, prestige, Chibi Al Black Cast or Untouchables. So the idea you mentioned, Chris, was Nice Guys 2, Mexican Detectives.

• 1:10:31Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:32Bill Simmons?

That's what Crow and Gosling wanted to do.

• 1:10:33Speaker 02

  That's a billion dollar idea.

• 1:10:34Bill Simmons?

  Come on.

• 1:10:35Chris Ryan?

I also would accept if they just did this the way that Netflix did Sherlock, where it's just like, once every like, three or four years, they just do a three-episode thing. That would be awesome.

• 1:10:46Bill Simmons?

Well, this has happened a couple times in movies, and I'm pretty sure it happened in Anchorman, because I don't think Anchorman crushed it at the box office, but then became beloved over the next couple of years, to the point where we were like, why don't we do Anchorman 2? That'll fucking crush.

• 1:10:59Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:00Bill Simmons?

Um, this happened with Austin Powers, too.

• 1:11:03Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 1:11:03Bill Simmons?

Um, the first one did okay, it wasn't great, but became a cult movie, and then, and then 2 was a monster.

• 1:11:09Chris Ryan?

  I would just.

• 1:11:09Bill Simmons?

Nice Guys 2 would just be bigger.

• 1:11:10Chris Ryan?

It would be, but I would worry at this point Crow might be a long, a little long in the tooth to do it.

• 1:11:15Speaker 02

I think the only reason that could work is because it is kind of the movie. Right? Like, they're so rundown that however many years pass before they make it, it could kind of fit who these guys are.

• 1:11:24Bill Simmons?

It's kind of sacrilege, but could you, could you do this and not have them as the partners?

• 1:11:29Chris Ryan?

  I don't think it's the same.

• 1:11:30Bill Simmons?

Could you have Gosling? Could you have Crow, like, retired, getting sucked back in, but there's a new partner and there's three people in that, too?

• 1:11:36Chris Ryan?

No, I don't think it works.

• 1:11:37Speaker 02

  I hope not.

• 1:11:37Chris Ryan?

And that's exactly what they would do. They would put a younger person with them.

• 1:11:42Speaker 02

Who's in it? Who's, who's the young, is this, is this like a Miles Teller?

• 1:11:45Bill Simmons?

  I wish I didn't bring this up.

• 1:11:48Bill Simmons?

Is this movie better with Wayne Jenkins, Fergie the Florist, Zane Lowe, Robert Loggia, or anybody else? What do you think, CR?

• 1:11:57Chris Ryan?

Zane Lowe interviewing John Boy. Man, you're Jenny here from New York City. Everybody's talking about it here in the streets of Los Angeles. You're named after a Walton character, but what are you gonna do to forge your own character?

• 1:12:12Bill Simmons?

  Sure, you have a mole.

• 1:12:13Chris Ryan?

Sure, and that, and that, some people would look that as a handicap. But man, you, it's your power. I see that as your power. Again, South African. I can't stop making Zaylo South African.

• 1:12:24Bill Simmons?

Maybe we should have you as Leo and Blood Diamond as Zaylo. Maybe you just combine the two.

• 1:12:32Speaker 02

Give this one another. I don't know, I don't know what to say. It's, it's really something.

• 1:12:36Bill Simmons?

Is Blood Diamond a rewatchable for you?

• 1:12:39Speaker 02

  Didn't we do Blood Diamond?

• 1:12:41Chris Ryan?

  We didn't?

• 1:12:41Bill Simmons?

  20 year anniversary.

• 1:12:42Chris Ryan?

Wait a second, yes, we did.

• 1:12:44Speaker 02

  Yeah, we have.

• 1:12:45Chris Ryan?

Yeah, we've done Blood Diamond, dude.

• 1:12:47Speaker 02

  We have.

• 1:12:47Chris Ryan?

  Cause the AIDS thing.

• 1:12:49Bill Simmons?

  Are you sure we did?

• 1:12:50Chris Ryan?

Yeah, we had a whole conversation about whether he's HIV positive in this movie.

• 1:12:53Bill Simmons?

Hold on, I gotta find out when we did it because.

• 1:12:55Speaker 02

  Spoiler alert, yes.

• 1:12:56Bill Simmons?

  Blood Diamond.

• 1:12:57Speaker 02

  Definitely is.

• 1:12:58Chris Ryan?

  We definitely did.

• 1:12:59Speaker 02

  It's June 2023.

• 1:13:01Chris Ryan?

This is so in the Bill zone of like, I don't remember this.

• 1:13:04Bill Simmons?

No, but I, I usually don't remember, oh, I usually don't remember 2000 and 2021 because the COVID vaccine.

• 1:13:11Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 1:13:11Bill Simmons?

  But I, 23, I remember.

• 1:13:13Chris Ryan?

Not because you chose to podcast eight times a week during COVID.

• 1:13:16Bill Simmons?

What else were we gonna do?

• 1:13:19Chris Ryan?

  Be with our families.

• 1:13:20Bill Simmons?

Wow, we did that three years ago. Who did we do it with?

• 1:13:22Chris Ryan?

I think it might have just been you and me, one for us.

• 1:13:24Speaker 02

It was just the two of you.

• 1:13:24Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:25Bill Simmons?

Wow, I'm gonna have to listen to that. That sounds great.

• 1:13:27Chris Ryan?

I think I remember Sean's face when I told him we were doing Blood Diamond and he's like, cool.

• 1:13:34Bill Simmons?

Like bummed out he wasn't on it or thought it was?

• 1:13:36Speaker 02

  That must have been it.

• 1:13:37Chris Ryan?

It probably was a little bit of both, but he was, and then I remember telling him like, yeah, Bill and I really tried to unpack whether Danny Archer has HIV in that movie. And Sean was like, cool. Glad, glad I skipped that.

• 1:13:46Bill Simmons?

Glad I skipped that one. Yeah, now I remember it. God, we just so many podcasts.

• 1:13:51Speaker 02

  We really are.

• 1:13:52Bill Simmons?

Then 427, 28 rewatchables. Talking about Joel Embiid and Luca, whether he can put it together and Bam Adebayo scoring 83 points. It all blends together after a while.

• 1:14:03Speaker 02

Who is the most name checked non Celtics player on the rewatchables, do you think?

• 1:14:07Chris Ryan?

  That's a really good question.

• 1:14:09Speaker 02

Joel, I feel like might be up there, just for the antagonism alone.

• 1:14:11Bill Simmons?

  For the jokes?

• 1:14:12Speaker 02

Like, you're just, you're just prodding Chris Constance.

• 1:14:14Chris Ryan?

He brings it up once a month where he'll just be like, oh, this would be like if Embiid could actually play five games in a row. Uh.

• 1:14:19Bill Simmons?

  It's honestly probably.

• 1:14:22Bill Simmons?

  Probably Jordan, right?

• 1:14:23Speaker 02

  Hmm.

• 1:14:24Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, I guess so.

• 1:14:24Bill Simmons?

Like mentioning different like Jordan kind of parallels and things.

• 1:14:27Speaker 02

  Makes sense.

• 1:14:27Bill Simmons?

It'd be interesting. Someday we'll have AI and we'll just be able to ask AI and it'll just listen to every rewatchables in one second and then be like, it was actually Shaquille O'Neal.

• 1:14:38Chris Ryan?

And the AI will speak like Roger Ebert.

• 1:14:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:14:41Bill Simmons?

It'll speak like Blood Diamond Guy crossed with Zane Lowe.

• 1:14:44Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:47Bill Simmons?

Just one Oscar who gets it.

• 1:14:48Speaker 02

  Gosling.

• 1:14:49Chris Ryan?

  Gosling.

• 1:14:50Bill Simmons?

  Script?

• 1:14:52Speaker 02

  That's probably the second.

• 1:14:52Chris Ryan?

It's really good, but I, I think a lot of what's great about this movie are his reactions like, there's moments that wouldn't really jump off the page, like when they go to the dive bar in the hotel and they are like, you know, have you seen Amelia? And he's just like, I just work here. He's like, yeah, I know. That's why I'm asking you.

• 1:15:12Chris Ryan?

That's not like a hilarious thing on the page, but it's so funny, like the way they do it.

• 1:15:17Speaker 02

He also chases every line, every time that character thinks they're being smart. He like winks at somebody or does like a little eyebrow raise. It's just like, he sells everything so hard and so well.

• 1:15:27Chris Ryan?

Do you like my friend? He's wearing shoes.

• 1:15:30Speaker 02

  I made it myself.

• 1:15:30Chris Ryan?

  Is that a shirt?

• 1:15:32Bill Simmons?

So Casey Affleck wins for Manchester by the sea that year. Gosling nominated for La La Land.

• 1:15:38Chris Ryan?

  Hmm.

• 1:15:39Bill Simmons?

The other three were Denzel and Fences. Viggo Mortensen and Captain Fantastic.

• 1:15:44Speaker 02

  Get him out.

• 1:15:45Bill Simmons?

  What ha-

• 1:15:46Chris Ryan?

So you want to go double Gosling?

• 1:15:47Speaker 02

  Double Gosling.

• 1:15:48Bill Simmons?

Or Andrew Garfield and Hacksaw Ridge? We were just-

• 1:15:51Speaker 02

  That one can go too.

• 1:15:51Bill Simmons?

  What a drought.

• 1:15:52Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:53Bill Simmons?

That was like when Peja Stojakovic was fourth in MVP that one year.

• 1:15:57Speaker 02

  Let's get Peja's numbers up.

• 1:15:58Bill Simmons?

  Let's get Peja out.

• 1:15:59Speaker 02

  Peja's in the conversation.

• 1:16:00Bill Simmons?

  Peja Viggo's out.

• 1:16:03Chris Ryan?

Where does his kid go? Doesn't his, isn't his kid playing now?

• 1:16:05Speaker 02

  Yeah, he's playing somewhere.

• 1:16:06Bill Simmons?

  In college.

• 1:16:07Chris Ryan?

Is he in Arizona or something?

• 1:16:08Bill Simmons?

Yeah. So could Gosling potentially have been nominated twice? And has that ever happened?

• 1:16:13Chris Ryan?

When has that ever happened? I know it has.

• 1:16:14Bill Simmons?

I don't think anyone's been in the same category with two movies.

• 1:16:17Speaker 02

Did Leo not? I think he, did he not for, wasn't Blood Diamond and Catch Me If You Can the same year?

• 1:16:22Bill Simmons?

No, it wasn't same year. It was Departed and uh-

• 1:16:25Speaker 02

Or it was Departed and Blood Diamond. Did he not get double nominated for those?

• 1:16:28Chris Ryan?

Is this the same year? Two thousand, is that?

• 1:16:31Bill Simmons?

Not till this, so that would have been two thousand and seven? I think what's, it's happened a few times where somebody's gotten best and supporting.

• 1:16:38Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:39Bill Simmons?

  But not two best.

• 1:16:40Chris Ryan?

The most recent Scarlett Johansson Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit was lead and supporting.

• 1:16:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:16:45Bill Simmons?

Leo only got one that year. Damn.

• 1:16:49Chris Ryan?

Did you find out where Pedro Storakovich's kid goes to college? I think it's Illinois. Oh, okay. I don't know, I could be wrong.

• 1:16:56Bill Simmons?

You're oh, oh seven, best actor in a supporting role. Alan Arkin won. Jack Earl Haley in Little Children.

• 1:17:02Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:03Bill Simmons?

Diamond Hunsu in Blood Diamond. Eddie Murphy in Dreamgirls.

• 1:17:08Bill Simmons?

And Mark Wahlberg in The Departed.

• 1:17:09Chris Ryan?

  Yeah. Fucking lace guy, motherfucker.

• 1:17:13Bill Simmons?

We need to do the re-reap Departed too. Apparently, I can't remember any podcasts we've done.

• 1:17:19Bill Simmons?

Probably an answerable questions. How long did the Nice Guys Agency keep going before Jackson Healey died of a massive heart attack?

• 1:17:26Chris Ryan?

  Right, or.

• 1:17:27Bill Simmons?

  Like two years later?

• 1:17:28Chris Ryan?

Holler March gets his child taken away by protective services. Imminent.

• 1:17:32Bill Simmons?

Did we have protective services in the late seventies?

• 1:17:34Chris Ryan?

You were no better than us.

• 1:17:35Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I don't. I don't feel like we did. I was left alone for four or five hours a day.

• 1:17:39Chris Ryan?

I just found out relatively recently about kids being in car seats until they're a certain weight now, instead of age. So it's like, you could be in a car seat until you're like seven or eight, right? Theoretically, that seems extreme, maybe? I was in, I was like rolling around the back of a Pontiac when I was like three, like, you know, like. And you turned out great.

• 1:18:00Bill Simmons?

I told Rob when we did the mailbag for my pod, I wanted to put Con in a car seat. I didn't want him to get hurt, but he's huge.

• 1:18:06Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:07Bill Simmons?

  Couldn't really do it.

• 1:18:11Bill Simmons?

I used to, my dad would drive me home from, from school sometimes. And I would get to sit like on his lap on the seat in front of him and drive.

• 1:18:19Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:20Bill Simmons?

And then one time I looked down and noticed his hand was on the bottom of the wheel when he was really driving. I was like, fuck, I thought I was driving.

• 1:18:25Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:26Bill Simmons?

This whole time, I was like five.

• 1:18:27Chris Ryan?

  Would you?

• 1:18:28Bill Simmons?

But can you imagine seeing anyone do that now where there's this little kid driving 30 miles an hour in the front seat with the steering wheel like right there? Like, but that's what we did in the seventies.

• 1:18:37Chris Ryan?

If it was the kid with the big dick from the.

• 1:18:39Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, let him go.

• 1:18:42Bill Simmons?

So a mailbag, a mailbag that we did. That Rob didn't hear yet, because we haven't run it yet, but it was before this podcast. We changed the memorabilia question slightly to secret handshake memorabilia from the movie.

• 1:18:57Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:18:58Bill Simmons?

So it's still the memorabilia from the movie, but it's, it's an item that you have to really love the movie to get.

• 1:19:04Speaker 02

  If you know, you know.

• 1:19:05Bill Simmons?

  Misty Mountains poster.

• 1:19:06Chris Ryan?

  That would be good.

• 1:19:07Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 1:19:07Chris Ryan?

  All right.

• 1:19:07Bill Simmons?

Or maybe people would get that too easily.

• 1:19:10Chris Ryan?

Well, a poster for how do you like my car, big boy?

• 1:19:14Speaker 02

  That would be one.

• 1:19:14Chris Ryan?

Would be good. My personal one, which is a little bit more on the memorabilia side, but I, I kind of, if anybody knows, please email. I think they may have made it for the movie is the navy blue mesh bat Dodgers hat that Gosling wears for the two scenes. What, when he punches the window and when he's at the hospital.

• 1:19:32Speaker 02

You think it was custom merch?

• 1:19:34Chris Ryan?

I can't find a navy blue Dodgers mesh hat, seventies or otherwise. Maybe I'm wrong.

• 1:19:39Speaker 02

  Interesting.

• 1:19:41Bill Simmons?

What do you have for this, Rob?

• 1:19:42Speaker 02

Secret handshake one is tough because yeah, there's not a lot of signature items. I would go for the pink cow posted notes, which I'm going to then send to everyone I know. Anytime I have an important flight slash hotel room to mark on a piece of paper.

• 1:19:55Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 1:19:55Speaker 02

  We're in business.

• 1:19:56Chris Ryan?

I would love if you, it would be great if you could get a blow up poster of the Jackson and Holland's detective agency ad.

• 1:20:02Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:20:03Bill Simmons?

  They'll be.

• 1:20:04Speaker 02

In all of its Filipino or maybe Mexican glory.

• 1:20:06Chris Ryan?

  That's right.

• 1:20:07Bill Simmons?

Coach Finstock, Mr. Miyagi word for best worst life lesson, which people want, at least one person wanted to be Coghlan's law from Cocktail. Which I guess this could be a Coghlan's law. Sometimes you just win.

• 1:20:18Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:18Speaker 02

You do. How about sometimes there's two ways to look at something?

• 1:20:25Bill Simmons?

Best double feature choice? Would you go Shane Black?

• 1:20:27Chris Ryan?

Uh, so I had, uh, just because it also brings in the Detroit part of a crime, for a crime film is No Sudden Move, which is the Steven Soderbergh movie from a few years ago with Don Cheadle.

• 1:20:39Speaker 02

Yeah, that's a great one. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang feels too easy almost. I, I like that angle. I would almost go like drama comedy. Like let's do like a Michael Clayton or a Pelican Brief, another like corporate conspiracy kind of movie like that.

• 1:20:51Chris Ryan?

Speaking of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Chet is Val Kilmer's son.

• 1:20:54Speaker 02

  I know.

• 1:20:55Chris Ryan?

  Jack Kilmer.

• 1:20:55Bill Simmons?

  Jack Kilmer.

• 1:20:58Bill Simmons?

I have the other guys. I would have this first, then the other guys.

• 1:21:01Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:21:01Bill Simmons?

And just do guys, guys night.

• 1:21:03Chris Ryan?

  Guys night.

• 1:21:03Bill Simmons?

Nice guys, right and other guys. And then we have Gosling winning the movie.

• 1:21:06Chris Ryan?

  We do.

• 1:21:07Speaker 02

  I think he has to.

• 1:21:08Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Craig, you wanted this for a while.

• 1:21:11Speaker 03

Yeah. This is just all timer for me. Probably, I think it's the best comedy of the last 10 years. Since 2016, not that there's a ton it's competing against, but I love the Lethal Weapon movies, which you guys introduced to me on the rewatchables. And like you said, the buddy cop, the dark action comedy buddy cop comedy, I think is my number one favorite genre in movies. This movie in particular strikes a really delicate tone. It's, it's pretty impressive that they kill Margaret Qualley. Jessica gets thrown through a glass window.

• 1:21:40Chris Ryan?

  Yep.

• 1:21:41Speaker 03

And, and there's no love interest in this movie, which I really like.

• 1:21:44Chris Ryan?

  Except for Tally briefly.

• 1:21:46Speaker 03

It's just like, hold up, I'm writing this down. When she walks in, he's like, you look great.

• 1:21:51Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:52Speaker 02

And then she throws a pair of scissors at Holly's head.

• 1:21:56Speaker 03

But I, I don't know. I love that. I love that it's just like about these two gods. There's no kiss at the end. It's, it's perfect to me. I rewatch it every couple of years. Everybody I've watched it with likes it. It's just universally beloved. Fuck Angry Birds.

• 1:22:09Speaker 02

I love that it can end to like Gosling welling up, tears in his eyes, holding up the film reel. It's like, sometimes you do just win. Like again, it's, it's inexplicable. It's indefensible. But they lucked into it.

• 1:22:21Bill Simmons?

We never did the what happened the next day with the film reel.

• 1:22:26Chris Ryan?

Like, did they ever do anything with it?

• 1:22:27Bill Simmons?

Like, was it, was it a huge story? Was it a national story in the nightly news?

• 1:22:31Speaker 02

Kim Basinger didn't face any consequence, or she gets sent to prison, but the companies don't, aren't held liable.

• 1:22:36Speaker 03

Well, we should discuss this. The entire plan of making a porn movie that has a message in it to show it's auto show.

• 1:22:43Speaker 02

Well, it's just a commercial element.

• 1:22:44Speaker 03

It's a horrible plan. I mean, just like you have the information, send it to like a news station.

• 1:22:50Chris Ryan?

Right. You'd expect like sometime in 77, they're still riding high off Watergate.

• 1:22:54Speaker 03

  Cause they asked.

• 1:22:55Chris Ryan?

Not even, cause Nixon's still in, in office.

• 1:22:56Speaker 03

And they were like, go to the cops. And she's like, my mom is the cops. It's like, okay, you could find a journalist out there who would take this story and write about it and blow it up in the LA Times.

• 1:23:03Speaker 02

They do ask her and she says that they controlled the media too. I like it because it's from the perspective of like stoned out Margaret Qualley logic. Like, that's the only mechanism that can solve this problem.

• 1:23:15Speaker 03

It's also the, the movie takes, it's not like the message is in the very beginning of the porn movie either. Like you have to kind of sit down and watch it.

• 1:23:20Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:21Speaker 03

Which also makes no sense, but I do love the line, they made a porn where the plot is the point of the movie.

• 1:23:28Bill Simmons?

This was like the last era where they were making porn films where they're actually kind of go for it with the plot.

• 1:23:34Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:34Bill Simmons?

And with how they filmed it and actually spending money on it, which as Boogie Nights covered where Jack Horner is like really trying to make movies.

• 1:23:41Chris Ryan?

And the idea that anybody is like an experimental filmmaker who's also doing these things.

• 1:23:45Bill Simmons?

Ironically, we were texting about this yesterday about.

• 1:23:47Speaker 02

  Porn?

• 1:23:48Bill Simmons?

  The new Bev Cinema.

• 1:23:49Chris Ryan?

  That's right.

• 1:23:49Speaker 02

  Oh, sure. Yeah, literally porn.

• 1:23:51Bill Simmons?

They're showing, they're showing these like porn noir Friday nights or Saturday nights at midnight. They were showing some movie. I thought it was a joke, but it was real. And I texted them and Van's like, yeah, they've been doing it all month.

• 1:24:03Speaker 02

I'm not gonna name any names. We do have a colleague who has attended some of these out of experimental curiosity.

• 1:24:09Chris Ryan?

It is funny how you, like, Van was like kind of getting irritated where he's like, you guys all treat me like a freak, but you know as much as I do.

• 1:24:15Bill Simmons?

Dude, started throwing porn scandals at us. Yeah, so I'm gonna guess that's a mostly male crowd?

• 1:24:24Speaker 02

  Couldn't tell you.

• 1:24:25Chris Ryan?

No, wasn't it like, didn't somebody say it was like couples or something like that?

• 1:24:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:24:30Bill Simmons?

  No.

• 1:24:30Chris Ryan?

  Fans are bad, yeah.

• 1:24:31Speaker 02

  It must have been Van.

• 1:24:32Bill Simmons?

No way, that's true. That's 40 guys by themselves and two couples would be the audience.

• 1:24:37Chris Ryan?

No, it's a really important piece of cinema history.

• 1:24:40Bill Simmons?

Well, we're almost done with CR month, CR.

• 1:24:42Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, one more.

• 1:24:43Bill Simmons?

Any, have you started to think big picture, what this month meant to you and the love from the fans?

• 1:24:49Chris Ryan?

I'm curious to see how you use me going forward, you know, from a coaching perspective. You know, like you've now, do you take me down a peg or two? Do you, do you ice me? What do you do next with me?

• 1:24:59Bill Simmons?

What do you mean? You've been on like 70 to 75% of the episodes you've had.

• 1:25:04Chris Ryan?

But now I'm riding high, so do you?

• 1:25:06Bill Simmons?

Well, first of all, I like that we save some for the next CR month because when, you know, we have a year to plan this now with the festival.

• 1:25:13Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 1:25:14Bill Simmons?

And, uh, you know, the merch, all that stuff.

• 1:25:17Chris Ryan?

You can hire the guy to play the tree.

• 1:25:19Bill Simmons?

Right. The guy, the $20 big dick guy, we'll have him there of all the characters for some of these movies. But yeah, we left, we left Hunter, Hunter for, for October.

• 1:25:30Chris Ryan?

  For October, yeah.

• 1:25:31Bill Simmons?

Nice. Um, maybe October, maybe we just don't do it in October. Who knows?

• 1:25:35Chris Ryan?

  Okay, yeah.

• 1:25:36Bill Simmons?

Who knows if we'll do it or not?

• 1:25:39Speaker 02

I'm just worried for you, Chris.

• 1:25:40Chris Ryan?

  We saved aliens as well.

• 1:25:42Speaker 02

  Oh, thank goodness.

• 1:25:43Bill Simmons?

Those were the two that didn't, that you've talked about the most. There's been other ones, but those have been, other than the ones we've already done this one.

• 1:25:50Chris Ryan?

If you want to know, like, the other contenders were all, like, basically up in the brackets that we just did.

• 1:25:56Bill Simmons?

I've noticed, I don't always go into the comments, but I did for the Instagram vote. And some people were like, "Fuck yes, Sorcerer. You motherfucker, Sorcerer has to win." Like, people were, like, angry that anyone's voting for anything other than Sorcerer.

• 1:26:10Chris Ryan?

I think Sorcerer is a passionate, passionate fanbase.

• 1:26:12Speaker 02

Those were the CR heads, the true CR heads. Those are Sorcerer.

• 1:26:15Bill Simmons?

  Are you a Sorcerer guy?

• 1:26:17Speaker 02

Uh, yes, but not as a whole personality.

• 1:26:20Bill Simmons?

I don't know how I missed it for 50 years.

• 1:26:22Chris Ryan?

  It's a, it's a real, like, a film nerd new classic.

• 1:26:25Bill Simmons?

  No, I get it.

• 1:26:26Speaker 02

Film grow new classic, I would say.

• 1:26:27Bill Simmons?

But it's like, obviously in my wheelhouse, I just, you know?

• 1:26:30Chris Ryan?

It's only been a couple of years that it's looked as good as it looks now, though.

• 1:26:34Bill Simmons?

  Is that what it is?

• 1:26:35Chris Ryan?

Because I saw it at New Beverly and it was, it was still a pretty beat-up print. And everybody was really pumped about it, but like, it's been a while, it took a while for it to look as good as it looks.

• 1:26:44Speaker 02

Was that a more male audience than the porn New Beverly screening you saw?

• 1:26:49Chris Ryan?

It was a double feature, so it was hard to tell.

• 1:26:51Bill Simmons?

They should put that when they tweet out the movie, that they, they should have an audience survey after what the demo was.

• 1:26:57Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:58Bill Simmons?

Like, I wonder if they've ever got 100% dudes. Henry Porter, the serial killer, like, that kind of guy.

• 1:27:03Chris Ryan?

I've been into movies with 100% dudes, yeah.

• 1:27:05Bill Simmons?

  The 100% dude crowd.

• 1:27:06Chris Ryan?

  That's like Soldato.

• 1:27:07Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:27:09Speaker 03

That's like the Ringer Fantasy Football Show demo every time I look at it.

• 1:27:13Bill Simmons?

I watched the Soldato again after we did, uh, Sicaria.

• 1:27:20Speaker 02

I'm not gonna, I'm gonna withhold judgment during CR month.

• 1:27:23Chris Ryan?

  It's not bad.

• 1:27:24Bill Simmons?

It's tough. It's got some moments.

• 1:27:26Chris Ryan?

Yeah. 2033, we're still kicking around, we're looking for movies to do.

• 1:27:31Bill Simmons?

2033, very possible. Rob Mahoney, thank you. CR, a pleasure as always. Craig Gahow, thank you. Backer Rewatchables next week, LA Confidential, which is on Netflix.

• 1:27:43Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:27:44Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:27:44Chris Ryan?

  Is it?

• 1:27:45Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 1:27:46Bill Simmons?

No, I think it is. LA Confidential's on.

• 1:27:48Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, go ahead and check.

• 1:27:48Bill Simmons?

Yeah, so, uh, and if not, then we'll have to edit this out and do a separate piece of it. But LA Confidential coming next week for, uh, for CR month. And don't forget, we did the Mailbag, if you missed it, uh, last week as well, so. Yeah, no, it's on there. I'm confident. LA Confidential, Netflix.

• 1:28:06Chris Ryan?

  It's not.

• 1:28:08Bill Simmons?

It's not. It's not on there.

• 1:28:10Speaker 03

  No, it's on Amazon Prime.

• 1:28:12Bill Simmons?

  Damn it.

• 1:28:14Speaker 03

Well, we did just get acquired by Amazon Prime, so that'll be fine. There you go.

• 1:28:19Bill Simmons?

Okay, all right. L.A. Confidential, not on Netflix. Thanks, everybody.
