This episode of Smartless is sponsored by Google Book. So the other day, I wanted to make invitations for my dog Ricky's birthday party. And I've got three things open on my laptop. An adorable photo of Ricky, a picture of a birthday cake, and the RSVP details. Thing is, as much as I look like one, I'm not a canine birthday party invitation designer. That's where Google Book comes in. It's a whole new kind of laptop with a feature called Magic Pointer. I just click the photos and different elements on my screen and boom. Magic Pointer designs a customized birthday party invitation for Ricky. Click anything on your screen to create whatever you want. Visit googlebook.com. Available to 18-plus users.

So, uh, listen, this is, uh, this is, I know Sean's favorite part of the show. The cold open. Super fun, yeah.

• 2:51Will Arnett?

  Chat and chew.

• 2:52Sean Hayes?

Well, but no, no, no, that, that is, is, is his really favorite part of the show is what follows here. After the fun music, he gets to do his, his coffee chat. But right now, he sort of welcomes the, the listener in. Right, yeah. How you doing? And sort of gets a sense of everything, asks everybody how they're doing.

• 3:10Will Arnett?

And then like a little funny quip, like, what's the bit gonna be? You know what I mean?

• 3:13Sean Hayes?

Or I could do a dad joke, you know?

• 3:16Will Arnett?

You can do a dad joke.

• 3:17Sean Hayes?

I could do like something like, I could do something like I asked.

• 3:19Will Arnett?

Or, I know you could do that.

• 3:20Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 3:21Will Arnett?

Or you could just say to our audience, you could just say, hi.

• 3:25Sean Hayes?

  Hi.

• 3:26Will Arnett?

  Welcome to Smartless.

• 3:27Sean Hayes?

  Welcome to Smartless.

• 3:45Sean Hayes?

I have to say something. Okay, this year, you guys, both of, two of my best friends in the whole world, you, both of you, are doing some of the best work I've ever seen you do. I'm hanging out with Will on the set of his movie, and I've seen some footage, and Will, the, the work is truly, truly incredible. This is what I'm hearing, Will. Truly incredible, mind blowing. I've never seen, people are gonna be blown away. Not surprised. And Jay, when I, and then Jay, when I sat down and watched Black Grab it, I've already spoken about it. It's so, this year is so excited, I'm so excited for people to see both of you in these two incredible pieces, and I know you cringe when I say this, pieces of art, because I do believe that they're two pieces of art.

• 4:25Jason Bateman?

Thank you, coming from the reigning Tony Award winning artist.

• 4:28Sean Hayes?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, well, that's not why I said it, that's not why I said it.

• 4:31Will Arnett?

No, but you set the tone for us, you kind of let out, and, you know, "What a performer, really spicy from the Tabasco Theater."

• 4:41Sean Hayes?

  And now, and now-

• 4:42Will Arnett?

  That was unexpected.

• 4:45Sean Hayes?

  Nobody thought.

• 4:49Will Arnett?

  Watch him go back.

• 4:51Sean Hayes?

That's as he's getting yanked out.

• 4:54Will Arnett?

  Nobody- Let me finish.

• 4:57Sean Hayes?

  I have a good, wait, I have a-

• 4:58Jason Bateman?

When do we start recording this episode, you guys? Because I got a hard out.

• 5:03Sean Hayes?

  Wait, listen, wait-

• 5:04Will Arnett?

Sean, your guest is going crazy right now.

• 5:05Sean Hayes?

Do you want me, I know, I'm gonna get there, but do you want me to ask you guys a, like, thoughtful question that we can riff on? Or I can have a joke, or we can just get to the guest?

• 5:13Jason Bateman?

  Choice of patter today, huh?

• 5:14Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 5:15Jason Bateman?

  What do you want?

• 5:16Will Arnett?

  What's happening?

• 5:17Jason Bateman?

You've had some time, we haven't done one of these in a couple of weeks, I guess you've got some-

• 5:21Sean Hayes?

  That's what I'm saying, that's what I'm saying.

• 5:23Jason Bateman?

  I'd love a dad joke.

• 5:24Will Arnett?

  I'd like a joke too.

• 5:25Sean Hayes?

A dad joke, okay, well, this is the, I have, okay, I can do a dad joke, I can also do a- This is a great joke I just heard yesterday.

• 5:31Will Arnett?

Fuck, you have genres of jokes too? You have subsections to your-

• 5:37Sean Hayes?

Alright, so, this guy, this patient is in your, that patient is in an urologist office, and the doctor says, "Well, the result is that you gotta stop masturbating," and the patient says, "Why?" And the doctor says, "Because I'm talking to you."

• 5:51Will Arnett?

  I love it.

• 5:53Sean Hayes?

Oh, really? I thought that was funny.

• 5:54Will Arnett?

I love it, I love it, I love it.

• 5:58Sean Hayes?

Oh, wait, no, then I got, wait, do I have-

• 6:00Jason Bateman?

I've got one like that, but I don't have it yet fully, it's old, it's rusty.

• 6:04Sean Hayes?

How about this? Why did the Mexican, why did the Mexican take anti-anxiety medication?

• 6:09Jason Bateman?

  Careful.

• 6:11Sean Hayes?

  For Hispanic attacks.

• 6:13Jason Bateman?

Oh, that's all right. That's okay.

• 6:15Will Arnett?

I feel like that's okay. I feel like that's okay.

• 6:17Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 6:18Will Arnett?

But also, but also, but also, also, for the record, no reaction.

• 6:22Sean Hayes?

I have zero reaction. Story of my life. Ready, here we go.

• 6:25Jason Bateman?

  I hear America guffawing now.

• 6:27Sean Hayes?

Guys, my guest today, who's far funnier than I am, grew up in the Kansas City area, and he's a diehard-

• 6:33Jason Bateman?

  Jason Sudeikis.

• 6:34Sean Hayes?

Diehard Kansas City Chiefs fan. He's the co-owner of a candy store in Reinbeck, New York.

• 6:39Will Arnett?

  Paul Rudd.

• 6:40Sean Hayes?

And he once said his secret for staying youthful and fit is eight hours of sleep.

• 6:44Jason Bateman?

You gotta bury the tell stuff.

• 6:46Sean Hayes?

People often still mistake him for Ben Affleck. He met his wife when looking for a publicist after filming Clueless. It's the hilarious, delightful, and widely talented Paul Rudd.

• 6:54Jason Bateman?

  What? Paul?

• 6:57Sean Hayes?

  Wait, did you guys already-

• 6:58Will Arnett?

Light reveal. Oh, he's doing his-

• 6:59Jason Bateman?

Let's see if it's just his mouth.

• 7:00Will Arnett?

He's just doing a slight reveal.

• 7:03Jason Bateman?

  This is long overdue.

• 7:04Sean Hayes?

How did you know he was from Kansas City?

• 7:06Jason Bateman?

Because there's only a few. There's Claire McCaskill, there's Rob Riggle, there's Jason Sudeikis, and there's-

• 7:13Sean Hayes?

I didn't know that. How do you know that?

• 7:15Will Arnett?

Paul, do you get mistaken for Claire McCaskill a lot?

• 7:18Sean Hayes?

Uh, I get a lot of her emails. And, uh, it's usually when they talk about the, uh, the three from KC.

• 7:29Jason Bateman?

  The big three.

• 7:29Sean Hayes?

It's, uh, it's Sudeikis, me, and McCaskill.

• 7:32Will Arnett?

How, how has it taken this long for Sean? I feel like this is Sean's fault.

• 7:36Jason Bateman?

Couldn't make your deal any earlier than now, and, uh, now finally, uh, you've given us a manageable price.

• 7:42Will Arnett?

Aline Kishian was, was rough in the negotiation.

• 7:46Jason Bateman?

She banged us up on this.

• 7:47Sean Hayes?

Are you with Aline too, Paul?

• 7:49Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 7:49Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 7:49Jason Bateman?

Yeah, there's a package right on this.

• 7:50Sean Hayes?

That's your manager? That's great. Always. She's great.

• 7:53Jason Bateman?

  The great-

• 7:53Sean Hayes?

Back when she was in, she was my agent when she was an assistant. That's, uh, that's how far back we go. Yeah.

• 7:59Will Arnett?

  No way.

• 7:59Sean Hayes?

  Oh, wow. How about that?

• 8:00Jason Bateman?

Wait a second. So, so she was working the phones for the, for the real agent, and that real agent kinda siphoned you off on the junior slash receptionist?

• 8:09Sean Hayes?

Yeah, ICM. It was right on, right, uh, since kind of Clueless. Yeah. Wow.

• 8:15Will Arnett?

  Wow.

• 8:15Sean Hayes?

And, uh, wait, I want to go back because I didn't know you own a candy store. Can you talk to me about the candy store, please?

• 8:20Speaker 03

  Sure.

• 8:21Sean Hayes?

  Like, where is it?

• 8:22Will Arnett?

  An address on it?

• 8:25Speaker 03

Well, it's called Samuel's Sweet Shop and it's in Reinbeck, New York. And it was, it was, uh, it was started by a guy named Ira. And, um, he was, it was just this sweet guy and it-

• 8:40Will Arnett?

  No pun.

• 8:40Speaker 03

He passed away sadly when he was very young. And, uh, we, we didn't want the candy store to kind of go away because it's, it's not a big place, not a big town and, and all the high school kids would work there and everyone needs a candy store. And so, uh, Jeffrey Dean Morgan-

• 8:55Sean Hayes?

  Yep.

• 8:55Speaker 03

And Hillary Burton, who are neighbors of mine, um, uh, yeah, let's, yeah.

• 9:01Sean Hayes?

I know me some Jeffrey Dean.

• 9:03Speaker 03

  You do?

• 9:03Sean Hayes?

  I like that guy.

• 9:04Will Arnett?

I like all his performances. In one- Sorry.

• 9:08Speaker 03

Anyway, we all, we went in and another guy named Andy Ostroff, uh, we, we went in and bought the candy store. And now we, uh, and we run it.

• 9:16Sean Hayes?

Now Reinbeck is, uh, that's, that, you can't walk there from the city, right? That's a, that's a, that's a trip.

• 9:21Speaker 03

You can. It'll take you a while.

• 9:23Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 9:23Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 9:24Sean Hayes?

You'd need a lot of candy to fuel it.

• 9:25Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 9:26Sean Hayes?

Is it, it's like a two hour drive?

• 9:28Speaker 03

It's about a two hour drive. Yeah, about an hour, depending on if you're leaving from the Upper West Side, it's about an hour and 45.

• 9:35Sean Hayes?

Well, I'll leave, I'll get a head start. The, uh, Jenny Slate also owns a small store like upstate New York, like-

• 9:41Will Arnett?

  Massachusetts.

• 9:42Sean Hayes?

  Oh, never mind. Moving on.

• 9:44Will Arnett?

  A general storage. She's a general store.

• 9:46Speaker 03

  Same with, uh, Correll, too.

• 9:47Will Arnett?

Are we gonna start going down, Sean? You, you want to start listing people who also own businesses?

• 9:51Sean Hayes?

Come on down to 85 and let us know, uh-

• 9:54Will Arnett?

Paul's got a candy store in Reinbeck, okay, started by Ira.

• 9:57Sean Hayes?

  And that's it.

• 9:59Sean Hayes?

Wait, so go back. So you met your, you met Aline that way and then you met your wife because you were looking for a publicist? Is that right?

• 10:06Speaker 03

Yes, well, I was the director of Clueless.

• 10:10Sean Hayes?

  You were the director?

• 10:11Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 10:12Sean Hayes?

  Amy Heckley.

• 10:13Speaker 03

So the Amy Heckley, uh, said after we filmed Clueless, I knew nothing about anything. I, I still don't that much, really.

• 10:19Sean Hayes?

  Were you clueless?

• 10:20Speaker 03

  Uh, I was clueless.

• 10:21Sean Hayes?

Well done, you. Welcome to Smartless. Guys, we got, we're cooking with gas.

• 10:26Speaker 03

  Emphasis on smart.

• 10:28Will Arnett?

  Yeah, I mean, yeah.

• 10:29Sean Hayes?

By the way, I love Julie, your wife Julie. She's awesome.

• 10:32Speaker 03

  Oh, thank you.

• 10:32Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 10:33Speaker 03

  And she loves you.

• 10:34Sean Hayes?

  Julie, that's what it is.

• 10:36Speaker 03

  Thank you.

• 10:36Sean Hayes?

  See?

• 10:37Speaker 03

Uh, she loves you guys. And she said to say hi, and she also said, say nice things about her. So, I love my wife.

• 10:43Jason Bateman?

  Oh, wow.

• 10:44Speaker 03

And, and, and she's an avid listener.

• 10:46Sean Hayes?

And then we just hear the page flip, and then you...

• 10:49Speaker 03

And, no, it's enough of her. And so, uh, uh, yeah, so, um, what were you talking about?

• 10:54Sean Hayes?

I was talking about meeting Julie. Looking for a publicist on Clueless, Amy Heckley.

• 10:58Jason Bateman?

Paul, you're upstate, so, so you meet your wife Julie, you meet her through, she's your publicist. We've been through that. I mean, let's just get down to the, here are the brass tacks.

• 11:06Speaker 03

  Nobody really cares.

• 11:06Jason Bateman?

You are a guy who has been...

• 11:08Sean Hayes?

  They do, I do.

• 11:09Jason Bateman?

You've been working at the highest level for over thirty years. And I mean that in a way. You have been consistently doing stuff. Comedy, drama, all this, like, right?

• 11:20Speaker 03

  No missteps.

• 11:21Jason Bateman?

  No missteps.

• 11:22Speaker 03

Yeah, no, I think there are a few.

• 11:24Sean Hayes?

No, not even, not even Hallow- no, Halloween six, not even that. I saw that, you were fucking great in that. That was seventy-five years ago. That was so good.

• 11:33Speaker 03

That was the first thing I ever did, the first movie.

• 11:34Sean Hayes?

  No, was it really?

• 11:35Speaker 03

Thank you. Yeah. Did, now, had you seen the first five parts?

• 11:39Sean Hayes?

  Are you kidding me?

• 11:40Speaker 03

Where you lost in the storyline?

• 11:41Sean Hayes?

I've seen all of them. I saw all of them.

• 11:43Speaker 03

  You saw them all?

• 11:44Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, I loved them.

• 11:45Jason Bateman?

I saw the first and loved it. There would, there was five more. Is that right?

• 11:48Sean Hayes?

No, there was, no, he was in six.

• 11:49Speaker 03

Even more than that, yeah. The first is a classic. When you get to six, eh, plot holes.

• 11:55Sean Hayes?

What are you talking about? I loved it, yeah.

• 11:57Jason Bateman?

  There's some shark jumping?

• 11:59Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 11:59Sean Hayes?

  Oh, yeah.

• 12:00Jason Bateman?

Do you end up getting killed in that one, spoiler?

• 12:02Sean Hayes?

  No, I s- I survived.

• 12:04Jason Bateman?

Do you, do you, do you get a good shot in on him?

• 12:07Sean Hayes?

Um, I remember, uh, yeah. Uh, we have a, we get into it. We had some scrapes.

• 12:14Jason Bateman?

  Knife fight?

• 12:14Speaker 03

No, now, because you've done so many movies, do you really truly remember? Sorry, what Jason's asking.

• 12:20Jason Bateman?

Yeah, no, I wait, I wanna wrap, oh, what was the weapon that you guys were, were tossing with? You and Mike Myers?

• 12:25Sean Hayes?

I think I hit him with a pipe.

• 12:27Jason Bateman?

  Okay.

• 12:27Sean Hayes?

I think I maybe hit him with a pipe.

• 12:28Speaker 03

  That's a good choice.

• 12:29Jason Bateman?

So you stun him for a second, but then he continues after you? He never runs?

• 12:33Sean Hayes?

  Didn't, it didn't kill him.

• 12:34Jason Bateman?

No, that's what's horrifying about Mike Myers, is that he never runs. He just walks, cause he's gonna get you.

• 12:39Sean Hayes?

  He just walks.

• 12:39Jason Bateman?

He's gonna take his time. Did you ever do a tie-in around, around Halloween at the candy store with like photos of yourself from the steals from the movie? That'd be good.

• 12:47Speaker 03

This is a great, uh, thank you, Will, that's a great idea. Haven't done it.

• 12:51Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 12:51Speaker 03

Haven't really done that yet, but maybe, maybe this year.

• 12:54Sean Hayes?

  Write this stuff down, Paul.

• 12:55Jason Bateman?

So you end up surviving six, but was not, you, not in seven? Did you know?

• 13:01Speaker 03

  No, I, I didn't, I, they didn't ask me about Seven.

• 13:04Jason Bateman?

They did like a cast change, like Fargo or?

• 13:07Speaker 03

I think they kinda went. I wanna say in Seven, it might have been Josh Hartnett?

• 13:12Jason Bateman?

They did a White Lotus swap.

• 13:14Speaker 03

  That might have been H2O.

• 13:15Sean Hayes?

Oh, H2O, I remember that one.

• 13:17Speaker 03

  Came back strong in Seven.

• 13:18Will Arnett?

If I, if I, if I had been a reviewer of Seven and knowing, and that you weren't in it, my headline for my review would have been all trick and no treat.

• 13:27Speaker 03

  Oh geez.

• 13:28Will Arnett?

  You know?

• 13:29Sean Hayes?

  Aw, man.

• 13:30Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 13:31Jason Bateman?

You know, Paul, you're in a pretty special episode of Smart List so far. We're only thirty-one and ten.

• 13:36Speaker 03

  That's really sweet.

• 13:36Jason Bateman?

And we're not even the first question yet.

• 13:38Speaker 03

Twenty-nine of which my microphone went down, but.

• 13:40Sean Hayes?

  I know.

• 13:40Speaker 03

I did want, I did want, I know. Can I just say also, how, how fun it is, just to, you know, when, to listen to you guys.

• 13:48Jason Bateman?

Keep your knees bent, we're only halfway through.

• 13:49Speaker 03

To listen to you guys before I come on, and to hear the jokes, which I really, really liked.

• 13:55Sean Hayes?

Did you like my urologist joke?

• 13:57Speaker 03

I did like the urologist joke.

• 13:58Sean Hayes?

  See, you're the one, yeah.

• 13:59Speaker 03

I'm a fan of the dad jokes. I heard one not that long ago that I really liked, which was, uh, what did, where did McKid Melons go, um, for the summer?

• 14:09Sean Hayes?

  Hmm, where?

• 14:10Will Arnett?

  Where?

• 14:11Speaker 03

Uh, to John Cougar's melon camp.

• 14:14Sean Hayes?

  Nice, that's a good one.

• 14:15Will Arnett?

  I love it.

• 14:16Sean Hayes?

I've, I've, I've remembered my urologist joke. Guy goes in for a prostate exam.

• 14:21Will Arnett?

  Shit, oh my god.

• 14:22Speaker 03

No, Jesus, no, this is bad.

• 14:23Will Arnett?

  Watch this, Paul, watch this.

• 14:25Speaker 03

We don't have any kids listening to this.

• 14:26Sean Hayes?

I like a good prostate exam joke.

• 14:27Will Arnett?

No, Paul, watch, watch how you bludgeon a joke. Keep going, Jason, watch, go.

• 14:31Speaker 03

I will stumble right before I cross, right before I chest the tape, I will fall.

• 14:36Will Arnett?

  Here we go.

• 14:37Speaker 03

So guy walks in, uh, urologist, hey, he's gotta get his, uh, prostate exam, and, uh, and so he's gotta lean over the table, he's gotta get the, the old, and, uh, so the doctor says, uh, okey doke, here we go, this time Jimmy, no hard on. And the guy turns around, he says, my name's Bill. He goes, yeah, no, I'm Jimmy. Yeah.

• 15:00Sean Hayes?

  That's not even.

• 15:00Will Arnett?

I've heard Jason try to tell that joke fifty times.

• 15:03Speaker 03

By the way, it's a great joke.

• 15:04Will Arnett?

One time he's like, and the guy Paul says, and then Paul says Jimmy, and he goes, Bill, I'm not Paul, I'm Jim. What are you, I looked at him, like, what are you doing?

• 15:13Jason Bateman?

  Listen, I don't write. I speak.

• 15:16Speaker 03

Wait, we're gonna get, we're gonna get to your life.

• 15:19Will Arnett?

Okay, here's, here's Sean, Sean, I'm gonna grab the reins here, so Paul.

• 15:21Sean Hayes?

What am I talking about? I've been trying.

• 15:24Will Arnett?

Cause you've been, you're, you're all gussied up on Pop-Tarts. Paul, so I was saying that you've been at the top of the level, so you, you, you, you start out of the gate, sure you do Halloween six, it's amazing, but, but then you do like, you just do so many movies, so how was it that you came, what was the thing, first of all, what was your first professional job, not necessarily movie, but how did you know, like, it seems like you've been doing it at the highest level from moment one, but what was moment one for you, like, how did you, how'd you leave Kansas City, what was that thing?

• 15:53Speaker 03

Oh yeah, I didn't have any of those questions prepared, go ahead.

• 15:56Will Arnett?

Well, well, fuck, we're twenty-five minutes in, man.

• 15:58Sean Hayes?

  What the hell is that?

• 16:01Will Arnett?

  Paul's microphone.

• 16:03Speaker 03

It is, totally, it's this weak connection that I have. Thank you for saying that, Will, it's not, it's, uh.

• 16:09Sean Hayes?

  Thank you, Colin.

• 16:09Speaker 03

I don't think it's totally, uh, true, I've made many missteps and I've, I've been very fortunate in many instances, but, when I was a kid, I just loved comedians, I loved watching, um, SNL and all of that stuff, and listening to Steve Martin albums, and, um, I think that, you know, when I was kind of in school, we had speech class, uh, we had a radio and TV class, I loved watching the David Letterman Show, and I used to start making little videos, like he used to do.

• 16:41Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 16:42Speaker 03

And I used to perform in speech competitions, and when I was, you know, I wanna say about sixteen years old, my neighbor in Kansas City said, what do you think you wanna study? What do you think you wanna, you know, pursue? And I said, I don't know, I, I like the arts and I like drawing and all of that, and he said, what about an actor? It seems like that's something that you would maybe like to do.

• 17:06Speaker 03

And I think it was some kind of. lightning bolt moment where I thought, yeah, maybe that is what I'd like to do. Because I certainly always liked funny stuff and movies and everything else. And it feels like from that moment on, I decided, oh, this is exactly what I'm gonna try and pursue. And I then went to school for it and I studied it and I-

• 17:24Sean Hayes?

And what were these, what was this humorous interpretation thing? Because we had something similar in high school, but it was called forensics. I don't know why it was called-

• 17:30Speaker 03

Yeah, forensics, exactly. This is, it was called forensics in Kansas City, too. And sometimes I would tell people, I studied forensics and they think it's like what Quincy did.

• 17:38Sean Hayes?

Yeah, right. Quincy, yeah, Quincy. For all the young listeners, Quincy, yeah.

• 17:44Speaker 03

Do we know why, do we know why it's called forensics, Sean?

• 17:47Sean Hayes?

I don't, I don't. And in high school, people would be standing against a wall and talking to it like, and I didn't know what they were doing, but they were rehearsing, like, but really close to a wall and talking to a wall, I thought that was the weirdest thing. But now I get it, they were just rehearsing their monologue or their forensics or whatever it was.

• 18:03Will Arnett?

You sure you weren't institutionalized? You weren't in an institution at that point?

• 18:07Speaker 03

  It looks like an institution.

• 18:09Sean Hayes?

You may have still been at the hospital, Sean.

• 18:12Speaker 03

It wasn't even comedic forensics? That, that I would understand.

• 18:16Sean Hayes?

Well, there were different categories. There was dramatic interpretation, humorous interpretation, prose and poetry, improvised duet acting, and, yeah.

• 18:28Sean Hayes?

And we will be right back.

• 18:32Sean Hayes?

Let's talk about the Idaho effect. It's a feeling you get hiking the Sawtooth Mountains at sunrise, or mountain biking on hero dirt at Silver Mountain Resort, leaving you craving more. It's a feeling where the freedom to roam is real, and it's found in Idaho. Idaho might just be the last authentic place in the West. Once you have this feeling, one that stays with you long after returning home, that's the Idaho effect. Plan your Idaho vacation at visitidaho.org.

Let's take a beat to tell you about Bureau. Now, you'll remember we had Tom Holland on the show a while back, and this is his non-alcoholic beer. His whole thing was about creating a beverage without the alcohol that still gives you all the stuff that you love about beer. It's the same ingredients, just without the alcohol. And they've got a West Coast-style IPA, hazy IPA, pills, and even a wheat beer. So all the classics with all the flavor you'd expect. And because Tom's a friend of the show, he's given us the code SMARTLESS for 20% off your first order at bureaubrewing.com. Now, what I love is the pills. That's my favorite.

• 22:43Sean Hayes?

And now, back to the show.

• 22:46Sean Hayes?

So Paul, I heard you were a DJ for a while, right?

• 22:50Speaker 03

Well, I mean, barely. You know, I did.

• 22:53Sean Hayes?

Okay, I thought it was like a long, I thought it was a years-long thing.

• 22:55Speaker 03

I really did DJ. But when you say to people that, you know, "Oh, I used to DJ", that sounds like it was kind of a cool thing. But the way I DJed was not cool in anything.

• 23:05Sean Hayes?

It was like weddings and bar mitzvahs and stuff?

• 23:06Speaker 03

Yeah, bar mitzvahs. And by the way, eventually, it was that. The first time I DJed was, I was in high school.

• 23:14Sean Hayes?

It's just an ice cream truck.

• 23:15Speaker 03

  And I went.

• 23:18Speaker 03

Nobody, they're like, "We don't even have equipment in this thing." We was trying to get a job as a waiter. I was in high school and... And I went to different restaurants and I had really long hair. And I didn't want to cut my hair because.

• 23:39Jason Bateman?

  Cause you're a G.

• 23:41Speaker 03

I was a, I was a cheese ball and I'm like, I gotta keep this.

• 23:44Jason Bateman?

Yeah, sure, sure. You're crushing it.

• 23:46Speaker 03

So, and so I was getting rejected at every um waiting uh you know, application I'd fill out like, there's no way I couldn't get a job. And I went to this bar called Studebakers, which was like a 50s bar in Kansas City. Had to be 23 to get in. They didn't want any of the younger crowd.

• 24:06Jason Bateman?

  Wow.

• 24:07Sean Hayes?

  Sure.

• 24:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:08Jason Bateman?

They didn't even want, they didn't even want new drinkers. You had to have at least two years under your belt.

• 24:12Speaker 03

They want some certified 23 year olds who like, who's gonna go to a 50s bar anyway?

• 24:17Sean Hayes?

  Right.

• 24:18Will Arnett?

And you had to be born in the 50s to get in.

• 24:21Speaker 03

To even want to go to this place.

• 24:23Sean Hayes?

  That's funny.

• 24:24Speaker 03

And um, and so I went to try and get a job and they said, we're not hiring. And I saw that they had a DJ booth and I said, do you need a DJ? Because I also DJ, which is not true. I didn't. But they said, um, actually we do. But here's the thing, at Studebakers, every hour on the hour, we do these things called showtimes. Where all the waiters hop on the bar and they do like, you know, born to hand jive or some dumb song and dance thing.

• 24:59Jason Bateman?

You don't, Sean, we don't need to, the next sentence out of your mouth doesn't need to be, you mean like this?

• 25:03Will Arnett?

Like this. Or are they still in business? Or what are their hours?

• 25:07Jason Bateman?

Address, buddies? Any of those sentences are a no.

• 25:11Will Arnett?

So, so you lied, so you lied, but you knew you had a stack of wax in the car.

• 25:16Speaker 03

So I lied and they said, well, here's the thing, you got to audition because we do these showtimes. So I, I, I had to audition with a lip sync of a 50s song.

• 25:24Will Arnett?

Which one? I know you still know.

• 25:26Speaker 03

  So I chose Volare.

• 25:29Speaker 03

Volare. Yeah, and which was, I just thought it'd be funny because it's in, you know, Italian. And, but I put on a tuxedo and a pompadour to cover my long hair. Like an Elvis wig, right? And so anyway, I got the job. And then they saw that I had really long hair and they said, you gotta cut your hair. We're a 50s bar, not a 60s bar. And I said, well, I won't do it. So they made me wear the Elvis wig every time I worked.

• 25:59Jason Bateman?

Oh, right. Wear the pompadour every time?

• 26:01Speaker 03

Yeah, and it was also a really bad pompadour. So it was really cheap wig. And so it started to lose its pompadour shape. And it just turned into like a big weird black tuft of something. And when I was working, people didn't realize that I had long hair and had to cover it up. So they just thought I was some young kid with this weird wig. I don't know what they thought. But anyway, that started, that started my DJing career.

• 26:34Will Arnett?

Well, you know what? It reminds me, you make me think, you know, you hear about, you know, famously, Michael Jordan, when he had his Hall of Fame speech. And then he, you know, he's being celebrated for being the greatest basketball player. And then he harped, he really harped on like his high school coach who cut him from the basketball team and all the people who didn't like, right? Like that he still hung on to that. And I think we should get stickers made up and go around these Kansas City establishments that rejected you.

• 26:59Speaker 03

Yeah, how you like me now.

• 27:00Will Arnett?

And stick it on the front window. This place rejected Paul Rudd, right? Really let that stink linger on him. You know what I mean?

• 27:08Jason Bateman?

  Your hiring practices are ridiculous.

• 27:10Will Arnett?

Yeah, you know what I mean?

• 27:11Speaker 03

Are ridiculous. Yeah, that's great. Speaking of, your original last name was Rudd, Rudsky, Rudnisky, Rudnitsky? What is it? Rudnitsky. Down like way back, not while I was born or my grandparents, way back, great, great grandparents. Yeah.

• 27:29Jason Bateman?

  Wow. Polish?

• 27:32Speaker 03

Like Russian, Belarus, that, Eastern European, yeah.

• 27:36Jason Bateman?

Have you done the thing where you do the whole look back and like, do you know, do you know, do you know your people? What they did, where they were?

• 27:43Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 27:43Jason Bateman?

  The wars they fought in?

• 27:45Speaker 03

  And I found.

• 27:47Speaker 03

I found that it was mainly kind of like in an area of Belarus. Yeah, something called a town called Holmec.

• 27:56Sean Hayes?

  Oh.

• 27:58Will Arnett?

  Anybody's listening from Holmec.

• 28:00Jason Bateman?

I'll owe it to your boy.

• 28:01Will Arnett?

  You know.

• 28:02Sean Hayes?

But now wait, so Paul, you, you, let me tell you if I got this right. You were born in Jersey, moved to Kansas City, had a bar mitzvah in Canada. Your parents were from England.

• 28:12Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 28:12Sean Hayes?

So you were all over the place.

• 28:14Will Arnett?

Canada, this is now I'm interested.

• 28:15Sean Hayes?

Yeah. I mean, why, why so many different places?

• 28:20Speaker 03

Well, I being, you know, everyone in my family was kind of was British. Both my parents, everyone was kind of around London. My grandparents were in London, but they, we moved to the States. And then, or my, my parents did anyway. Most of the family went to Canada. And so I had grandparents and aunts and uncle in, in Toronto and, and in the GTA.

• 28:43Will Arnett?

  No, he really knows it.

• 28:45Sean Hayes?

  I know it.

• 28:46Speaker 03

  Right, eh?

• 28:47Will Arnett?

She, and the way he said Toronto too, he, this is real.

• 28:50Speaker 03

Yeah, I'd walk to the byway, get my Empire Strikes Back cards in French.

• 28:55Sean Hayes?

  Yes.

• 28:56Will Arnett?

  The byway.

• 28:57Sean Hayes?

Are you still a Maple Leafs fan?

• 28:59Speaker 03

  Pass the Mr. Submarine.

• 29:03Speaker 03

This is all for you, Will.

• 29:04Will Arnett?

This is such good stuff. Pizza, pizza, nine, six, seven, eleven.

• 29:08Sean Hayes?

  Though, isn't it?

• 29:09Will Arnett?

Mr. Sub, it's now Mr. Sub.

• 29:10Sean Hayes?

  Did you live in Canada?

• 29:12Speaker 03

No, but I'd been going there my whole life.

• 29:14Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 29:15Speaker 03

Yeah. So, and so most of my relatives were in Canada. So when I had to get a bar mitzvah.

• 29:26Speaker 03

My parents said, well, just do it in Canada because that's where most of the family is.

• 29:29Will Arnett?

Where was it in Canada? In Toronto?

• 29:31Speaker 03

  In Toronto, yeah.

• 29:32Will Arnett?

No way. Paul, come home. Come home.

• 29:36Sean Hayes?

  Wait, and so you're.

• 29:37Speaker 03

  Sure.

• 29:38Sean Hayes?

By the way, great, yeah. I will. What, so your parents, so your parents are in England. Your dad was a, a tour guide or something and you're, and, and was the vice president of TWA? And your mom?

• 29:49Speaker 03

Oh, no, he wasn't the vice president. That would have been nice. No, he did work for TWA. TWA was the, the airline.

• 29:56Speaker 03

TWA, their hub was in Kansas City, which is why we wound up in Kansas City.

• 30:01Sean Hayes?

Oh, I see, got it, got it, got it.

• 30:02Speaker 03

When, when my dad left London when he was a kid, he was about nine years old, and then they moved to New Jersey, his family, and they were in Patterson, New Jersey. And, but he eventually started working with TWA before I was born. And, and he kept getting job transfers. So we moved around a lot when I was a kid. I was born in New Jersey, and then I lived in New Jersey, and then I moved to Kansas for about a year, and then I moved to California for a few years, and then I moved back to Kansas. So we moved around quite a bit as a...

• 30:32Jason Bateman?

What about all the moving around and stuff? Was there like, that, it's giving me anxiety, all the schools and like, all the kids, oh, look at the new kid.

• 30:40Speaker 03

When you, when you, did you grow up in one spot? Did you always, I mean, Jason, you were always LA, right?

• 30:46Jason Bateman?

Since I was seven, I've been in Los Angeles, yeah. Where were you before that? I was in Salt Lake City from four to seven, I was in Boston from two to four, and I was in New York from zero to two, just, just outside in Raleigh. Oh, beautiful. But what about, what about you adapting into all those different environments? Did you have a sibling to sort of protect you, or did you do the protecting?

• 31:10Speaker 03

I have a younger sister, she's two and a half years younger than me. And I think, yeah, we always were just kind of the new kids in school. We got very used to it, we didn't really know any different.

• 31:22Jason Bateman?

But like, did that shape your, at an age where you're kind of learning your personality and, and kind of what your, what your strong suit is and what isn't, you know? Are you funny, are you, blah, blah, blah? Like, did it, did you find that you were, perhaps made you nicer earlier because you had to be accepted by these new groups all the time?

• 31:44Speaker 03

Uh huh, yeah, possibly. I, yeah, I sometimes think that, you know, a good way to kind of ingratiate yourself or just not get your ass kicked is to just be kind of... Pleasant and if you can make somebody laugh, then you can be accepted a little bit easier. I certainly was drawn and always have been drawn to people who are funny. I mean, my dad was hilarious. And I think that, you know, when I'd be, yeah, probably in some new school or something, I was, I'd go home and I'd listen to those Steve Martin records or.

• 32:17Sean Hayes?

Yeah, that album, Get Small. Did you ever listen to that?

• 32:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 32:20Jason Bateman?

What about British humor? Cause my mom's British as well and she really shaped my, my taste in, in dry, kind of no winking, you know, humor. Did, did your dad do that for you?

• 32:34Speaker 03

Well, I think that, you know, some of the earliest things I could really remember laughing at was they used to show Monty Python's Flying Circus on PBS.

• 32:44Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, I loved it.

• 32:45Speaker 03

My parents loved it and we'd watch it and I thought it was hilarious. I never really understood or thought in terms of like British comedy or a British sensibility. But I did always respond to that and then, and then when Faulty Towers was on, it was just.

• 33:00Sean Hayes?

One of my favorite shows of all time.

• 33:02Jason Bateman?

  But it's like, you know.

• 33:03Will Arnett?

  Oh, you guys like that?

• 33:04Speaker 03

Monty Python's a great example because.

• 33:06Will Arnett?

Holy shit. There's no way. You guys like Faulty Towers? Sean, oh Sean, you really like that? Fucking let the world know, man.

• 33:14Speaker 03

  Yeah, you guys discover this.

• 33:17Jason Bateman?

There's, but like Monty Python, there's like, there's the broad half of the, of the troupe and then there's like the dry half of the troupe. Like there's Michael Palin, you know, being crazy and goofy and then you cut to John Cleese and he's just blinking at him like, you fool.

• 33:33Jason Bateman?

Which, which were you drawn to? Was, was it the John Cleese side since you, you went to Faulty Towers?

• 33:38Speaker 03

Well, Cleese is always, yeah, hilarious. I think that, I think I just, there was an absurdity to it. And there was also something, it might've been the first time and maybe why I was drawn to Steve Martin as well. But it was like, oh my God, there are grownups that are being. Completely silly. I remember that twit of the year competition as a kid and I crying. I couldn't believe how funny it was to see these grownups acting this way.

• 34:05Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 34:06Speaker 03

I mean, there was still so much with same with Steve Martin where it was this kind of

• 34:11Jason Bateman?

  Right, right, right.

• 34:12Speaker 03

Ridiculous, I'm getting happy feet kind of thing.

• 34:14Jason Bateman?

  Right, yeah.

• 34:15Sean Hayes?

I want to know about glazing hams because that was one of your odd jobs out of school. What do you mean glazing hams? What does that even mean?

• 34:21Speaker 03

It means exactly, it means glazing hams.

• 34:23Sean Hayes?

Yeah, like what is that though? What do you mean?

• 34:24Jason Bateman?

Did you work at Honey Baked Ham?

• 34:27Speaker 03

  No, that was our competitor.

• 34:28Sean Hayes?

  Sorry, sorry.

• 34:30Speaker 03

  No, no.

• 34:30Sean Hayes?

What do you mean glazing them though?

• 34:31Will Arnett?

  Oh, it's still touchy.

• 34:34Speaker 03

Yeah, the hot spot. Look, it just, please don't bring that up to anyone at Holiday Ham Company because they had a real issue with Honey Baked.

• 34:44Sean Hayes?

Wait, but how do you glaze a ham? Like, what do you do?

• 34:47Speaker 03

  It's a whole process, Sean.

• 34:49Sean Hayes?

  Let's keep it clean here.

• 34:50Will Arnett?

It sounds like a YouTube how to video. How do you glaze a ham?

• 34:53Sean Hayes?

Is it like in a factory?

• 34:55Speaker 03

No, no, it was in a like a mini mall and.

• 34:59Sean Hayes?

Oh, I see. Like personalized ham.

• 35:01Speaker 03

It was like a, it was a standalone store.

• 35:04Sean Hayes?

  Oh, got it.

• 35:04Speaker 03

Honey Baked, I believe, is a chain, isn't it?

• 35:07Sean Hayes?

Okay, got it. I just wanted to, I was really curious.

• 35:09Speaker 03

No, I don't mean to besmirch Honey Baked.

• 35:11Will Arnett?

No, no, no, no, nobody took it that way. No, no, no.

• 35:13Speaker 03

  Oh, thanks.

• 35:14Jason Bateman?

I think they're a public company by now.

• 35:15Sean Hayes?

There's one thing I don't want to do. It's piss off the people at Honey Baked Ham.

• 35:19Will Arnett?

No, Paul, you do, you don't have a target on your back now. Don't worry. The gang over at Honey Glazed, okay?

• 35:27Speaker 03

  Um, I love.

• 35:29Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, go ahead.

• 35:30Speaker 03

Oh, no, no. What do you love?

• 35:31Sean Hayes?

No, you go, you go. What were you gonna say?

• 35:33Jason Bateman?

  Guys, don't play.

• 35:35Speaker 03

  All right.

• 35:36Sean Hayes?

  I was gonna.

• 35:37Speaker 03

  You go.

• 35:37Sean Hayes?

  Jesus.

• 35:38Speaker 03

  No, you go.

• 35:38Sean Hayes?

  This is a great bit.

• 35:40Will Arnett?

It is a great bit. It's the new Laurel and Hardy.

• 35:42Sean Hayes?

I want to know where you worked. I want to know where you worked.

• 35:44Speaker 03

Oh. I worked at Holiday, the Holiday Ham Company.

• 35:49Sean Hayes?

No, you're gonna say something else about working.

• 35:51Speaker 03

So I worked, I worked at this place.

• 35:53Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 35:53Speaker 03

And, and it was a, it was a whole, when I say it was a whole process, I would get there very early in the morning and I would unload a truck filled with ham.

• 36:03Jason Bateman?

  Naked hams?

• 36:04Speaker 03

  A lot of.

• 36:04Jason Bateman?

These aren't, these aren't glazed yet, right?

• 36:06Speaker 03

  These are unglazed.

• 36:07Will Arnett?

  Oh, you're talking unglazed hams?

• 36:09Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 36:09Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 36:09Speaker 03

Now, by the way, this isn't, this isn't like a, you know, pigs hanging in a truck. These, these were ham hocks? Are they hocks?

• 36:19Jason Bateman?

  They're yummy.

• 36:19Will Arnett?

  Sure.

• 36:20Speaker 03

And they were cryovacked, vacuum sealed.

• 36:24Speaker 03

And what I would have to do is unload a truck at like five in the morning and then I would have to cut open.

• 36:32Jason Bateman?

  Release them from their sheaths?

• 36:33Speaker 03

Yes, exactly. Cut open the plastic and then I would have to put them, these entire ham hocks.

• 36:43Sean Hayes?

So far, I haven't heard one thing that we're gonna keep in the episode, but go ahead.

• 36:47Speaker 03

Yeah, no, no, this is absolutely, it's boring myself as I even listen to myself describe it.

• 36:52Will Arnett?

So there you are. You're unloading. You got a truck full of unglazed hands.

• 36:55Speaker 03

So I gotta put it on a thing. I slice it. I dice out a whole thing. I gotta cut it in half with a saw. I put it on a spit and then I take a propane torch and a sugar sifter and I have to wear protective gear on my wrists.

• 37:09Sean Hayes?

Same approach to acting. Same approach to your acting.

• 37:11Speaker 03

That's exactly right. That is how I approach all of my roles.

• 37:15Jason Bateman?

And how long, were you, were you longer in this job than you were at the, at the, at the Bevick's place, the, the 50's joint?

• 37:23Speaker 03

  Oh, at the, at the.

• 37:24Will Arnett?

  Studebakers.

• 37:24Speaker 03

Yeah, Studebakers. I went from Studebakers to Holiday Ham Company. So, you know.

• 37:30Will Arnett?

Did you cut your hair before you were handling those hams? Sorry, can I ask, did you have the long hair when you were handling the hams or did you have?

• 37:36Speaker 03

Yeah, they didn't care. They didn't care.

• 37:38Jason Bateman?

But you had to put that shit in a net though, didn't you?

• 37:40Speaker 03

I, by the way, I think I had it in a net.

• 37:42Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 37:42Speaker 03

  And.

• 37:43Jason Bateman?

  Net the hair. Yeah.

• 37:44Speaker 03

Yeah. It was in a net. I was in the back. So if I was up front dealing with customers, there's no way.

• 37:50Jason Bateman?

  You snapped that off. Yeah.

• 37:51Speaker 03

There's no way they'd allow it.

• 37:53Jason Bateman?

  Comb it out.

• 37:53Speaker 03

  Yeah. Now, you.

• 37:55Sean Hayes?

I can only imagine though, you know, at least one or two of those long hairs were getting glazed into the ham.

• 38:01Will Arnett?

But you, I just thought it'd be a good Italian place called, I Canoli Imagine. It's just cannoli. So, it's terrible. It's terrible stuff. It's Saturday. It's Saturday and it's free. And it's free. So go ahead, Sean. Sean, get to your laundry list of questions and forget trying to have a conversation with Paul Rudd.

• 38:19Speaker 03

Well, let me help you out, Sean.

• 38:21Will Arnett?

Go down and fucking check off your fucking.

• 38:22Speaker 03

Paul, have you done any theater?

• 38:23Will Arnett?

We got Paul fucking Rudd here. A fucking, he's one of the most handsome, by the way, Paul. And I've seen it in stuff before. You look, you always look so fucking good.

• 38:31Sean Hayes?

  He's so handsome.

• 38:32Will Arnett?

You're so handsome. You're so good. We're around the same age. What are you doing? Just honestly, just an email with a couple tips.

• 38:39Speaker 03

He sleeps in an olive oil, olive oil bed.

• 38:40Sean Hayes?

Eight hours a day. You say the most important thing is eight hours a day. That's what you say.

• 38:43Jason Bateman?

It isn't what I said. I think I said something about sleep once where it was like, "Oh yeah, this is, you try and get enough sleep." I sleep a lot. I don't look anything like you. Can I, can I, you know what the secret is? What? Love. Yeah.

• 38:55Will Arnett?

  Oh my god.

• 38:56Jason Bateman?

That's our time. That's our time.

• 38:57Will Arnett?

  Who knew?

• 38:58Jason Bateman?

Love and laughter. You saved a new. Julie will have you back now.

• 39:02Will Arnett?

  Who knew?

• 39:06Jason Bateman?

  We'll be right back.

• 39:10Jason Bateman?

This episode of Smartless is sponsored by Duluth Trading Company. Guys, Duluth makes gear for people who work their butts off. Duluth exists for doers and was founded on the philosophy that there's gotta be a better way, which explains why their flannels are both comfortable and practical. Armpit gussets and a bi swing back give you freedom of movement no matter the activity. So you spend less time fighting with your shirt and more time getting the job done. They even make fire hose pants and work wear that is tough yet soft, made with 100% cotton fabric that once wrapped actual fire hoses. Isn't that crazy? Super cool. Duluth gear holds up year after year, so there's no need to replace your wardrobe every season.

• 39:53Jason Bateman?

I got a flannel shirt from them and I love it. It's super soft and cozy. And I can wear it outside of the store and then kind of maybe even sleep in it. I don't care. Duluth Trading Company for folks who work their butts off. Shop online or in store.

• 40:10Jason Bateman?

Let's take a beat to tell you about Bureau. Now you'll remember we had Tom Holland on the show a while back and this is his non-alcoholic beer. His whole thing was about creating a beverage without the alcohol that still gives you all the stuff that you love about beer. It's the same ingredients, just without the alcohol. And they've got a West Coast style IPA, hazy IPA, pills, and even a wheat beer. So all the classics with all the flavor you'd expect. And because Tom's a friend of the show, he's given us the code SMARTLESS for 20% off your first order at bureobrewing.com. Now, what I love is the pills. That's, that's, that's my favorite.

• 40:54Jason Bateman?

And since I don't drink anymore, but I still, but I miss beer? This, this is perfect. This scratches the itch and checks the box. Oh baby, baby. And because I liked it so much, I even invested in Bureau. So I got some skin in the game, huh?

• 41:10Sean Hayes?

  All right. Use code SMARTLIST for 20% off your first order at bureaubrewing.com. That's B E R O brewing.com.

• 41:25Sean Hayes?

• 42:06Sean Hayes?

And now, back to the show.

• 42:09Jason Bateman?

No, seriously, Paul, anything weird ever happen on stage, real quick, before we're out of time?

• 42:13Sean Hayes?

No, no, no. Well, yeah. You did a lot of theater. Do you have, I don't know if you listen to the podcast, but I love good theater stories or something.

• 42:19Jason Bateman?

  I know, of course.

• 42:20Sean Hayes?

Yeah, I do. You have anything ready?

• 42:23Jason Bateman?

Or you can sub it out for a Star Wars story, if you ever audition for it.

• 42:26Sean Hayes?

I have lots of other questions.

• 42:27Jason Bateman?

  Of great theater, theater stories?

• 42:29Will Arnett?

Yeah, yeah, something bad happened in the theater, something crazy.

• 42:31Sean Hayes?

Oh, something really bad, yeah. No, no, I've had, I actually, I, well, I've done a show where somebody died. In the audience.

• 42:37Jason Bateman?

  On stage.

• 42:38Sean Hayes?

Oh, in the audience. There was a death, there was a death in the audience. There was somebody, uh, went to the, um, to the bathroom in like the fourth row. That was an interesting thing. They get a whiff of that during the scene.

• 42:51Jason Bateman?

  No way.

• 42:51Sean Hayes?

Somebody, somebody lost control of their bowels.

• 42:54Jason Bateman?

So not only did you kill, but you acted the shit out of that part.

• 42:58Sean Hayes?

  Nice. Bravo!

• 43:00Jason Bateman?

  Thanks, guys.

• 43:00Sean Hayes?

Well, it wasn't me that did it.

• 43:02Jason Bateman?

  Oh.

• 43:03Speaker 03

No, that would be, actually, that would be, that would be horrifying.

• 43:06Sean Hayes?

Wait, what was the show and somebody really died?

• 43:08Speaker 03

Somebody died, last night of Ballyhoo was the show. These were two separate occasions.

• 43:14Will Arnett?

  Okay.

• 43:15Speaker 03

Unless I'm conflating them and they shit themselves in the way they die.

• 43:17Will Arnett?

  Because that often happens.

• 43:19Speaker 03

By the way, it's often, I think it even happens in the other order where it's like you die and then you wind up just shitting yourself. That's the thing that happens.

• 43:28Will Arnett?

So wait, so the person died?

• 43:29Speaker 03

I've had somebody, by the way, I've also done a show where somebody, in the middle of a scene, I heard a bunch of commotion in the audience and then didn't realize, it didn't subside. So it's like, what is happening? Only later came to realize that somebody in the front row of the balcony leaned over and puked on all of the people below them. Oh my!

• 43:50Will Arnett?

  No way!

• 43:52Speaker 03

Swear to God. Yeah. It was a show, it was a show called Grace. And there's a scene, and I was doing it with Michael Shannon.

• 44:00Will Arnett?

  No way!

• 44:02Speaker 03

And Michael Shannon had this long monologue, we're doing the scene, it's just the two of us. We hear this noise, we're both aware that, like, there's a commotion. But usually, it dies down and it's getting louder and louder. And Michael is pissed off and starts screaming his lines toward the direction of the noise.

• 44:24Sean Hayes?

  To make a point.

• 44:24Speaker 03

Which, of course, when Michael Shannon is yelling at you, like, it's the most terrifying thing. It's the thing that did make everybody kind of quiet down. And then, after this scene, I have to rush over to the, to the wings to do a costume change. And I asked the stage manager, I said, "What the hell's hap- what happened out there?" And he's the one that said, "Somebody threw up. Somebody was drunk."

• 44:46Sean Hayes?

  Wow.

• 44:47Speaker 03

"And threw up over the balcony and it puked onto about 10 different people."

• 44:51Will Arnett?

  "I'm covered in barf!"

• 44:56Will Arnett?

"This show's not for you, huh?"

• 45:02Sean Hayes?

  Fucking matinees.

• 45:06Sean Hayes?

That's amazing. Should've seen the Lion King.

• 45:14Speaker 03

  So, yeah.

• 45:15Sean Hayes?

  Wow.

• 45:16Will Arnett?

Fucking wait, Sean, this is like your fucking dream come true.

• 45:19Speaker 03

  I know, finally.

• 45:20Will Arnett?

  Theater story.

• 45:21Speaker 03

  I know.

• 45:22Will Arnett?

Talk about the person who died. I mean.

• 45:23Speaker 03

Learned that after the fact, like, oh, my god. They had to close down and then eventually they had to bring somebody, like a stretcher to get somebody out of there. It's, oh, wow.

• 45:32Will Arnett?

  Wow.

• 45:34Speaker 03

It's weird. I mean, you know, you hear of people dying on stage.

• 45:36Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 45:37Speaker 03

But you don't hear as much about people dying near the stage.

• 45:41Sean Hayes?

Yeah, yeah. But did you, so you stopped the show, yeah? You stopped and they, right?

• 45:45Speaker 03

  Uh, we did not stop.

• 45:46Sean Hayes?

You didn't keep going. You kept going?

• 45:48Speaker 03

  I don't think.

• 45:48Will Arnett?

Dude, are you kidding? Are you kidding?

• 45:50Speaker 03

  No, no.

• 45:50Will Arnett?

  He fucking, he killed.

• 45:51Speaker 03

  By the way, died.

• 45:53Will Arnett?

  The guy.

• 45:54Speaker 03

We slayed him. Yeah, died nearing the end of the show.

• 45:57Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 45:58Speaker 03

  And.

• 45:59Sean Hayes?

  So you finished.

• 45:59Speaker 03

I'm not so sure. Anyone realized.

• 46:03Sean Hayes?

  Oh, wow.

• 46:04Speaker 03

  Until.

• 46:05Sean Hayes?

  Until it was over.

• 46:06Speaker 03

Until people were shuffling out of the theater at one guy's stage.

• 46:09Sean Hayes?

Sounds like a nice peaceful passing.

• 46:11Speaker 03

Yeah. It was definitely a courteous way to go. Um, for us, for the actors.

• 46:17Sean Hayes?

That's a great, now, Sean, you have, I know you have plenty.

• 46:20Speaker 03

I've told, I think I've told every single good one.

• 46:22Sean Hayes?

  I know.

• 46:23Speaker 03

  On here.

• 46:24Sean Hayes?

Is there one you haven't told yet?

• 46:26Speaker 03

I mean, I'd have to think about it.

• 46:28Will Arnett?

Me and Reina are at the dinner theater.

• 46:30Speaker 03

Yeah, right. I've had, there, by the way, I had one, now they're all kind of coming, they're flooding back. I did a scene, I was lying on top of a bed. I was doing a scene, I was lying on top of a bed and I'm with this woman, Rachel Weisz was in the show, and I was wearing boxer shorts and a T-shirt, and all of a sudden, this had never happened before, I heard the audience laughing. And I, I'm like, what is going on? And I realized, it's because I was lying on the bed, I had my leg up and kind of like, and I realized my balls were hanging out.

• 47:13Sean Hayes?

Which is worse than actually like even your penis. It's like when it's just your balls.

• 47:20Jason Bateman?

  Or just one ball.

• 47:22Sean Hayes?

By the way, it might have been just one ball, but it was loose fitting.

• 47:25Will Arnett?

You know what's crazy about that?

• 47:26Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 47:26Will Arnett?

You know what's crazy about that? Your balls were showing in that show and the show was The Shape of Things.

• 47:31Sean Hayes?

Yeah. Yep, that's exactly right. Nice. That's exactly right. That was the show. The Shape of Things. That's nice. They were pendulous. I have one that's not as racist.

• 47:41Will Arnett?

The Shape of Things should have been, and the poster should have been your balls hanging out of shorts.

• 47:45Sean Hayes?

I think, I think we've all seen The Shape of Those Things.

• 47:49Will Arnett?

With the great Fred Weller, with our mutual friend Fred Weller, whom we adore.

• 47:53Sean Hayes?

  Yes.

• 47:54Will Arnett?

  Great Fred Weller.

• 47:55Sean Hayes?

You guys go back. Do you, you know, what's another one in my mind is that we were doing West Side Story. This isn't as funny, but we were doing West Side Story and you know, the Jets and the Sharks. And when they negotiate the rumble, they say, you know, knives, guns, pipes, fists, whatever. And this one guy Darren. Yeah, well, you just blew the joke, but uh.

• 48:16Sean Hayes?

But no, it's like that. So Darren, Darren, my friend Darren, who's the most gayest man on the face of the planet and wears it with a badge of honor. He's very, very, very funny, but he was a jet and he's trying to act tough. And you know, during performance 250, they go guns, knives, you know, pipes, fists. And he just jumps out and he goes, purses.

• 48:38Sean Hayes?

Same joke, same joke as dance.

• 48:43Sean Hayes?

That's funny. He had to be there. He had to be there. All right. So listen, when you're scrolling through, because you've been in, I want to go through before you leave. I just, I mean, my God, I had all these things. You're in an hour 10. Let this guy get back into his weekend. I know. Sorry. Wild oats and Clueless.

• 48:55Will Arnett?

  Your credits are fucking sick.

• 48:57Sean Hayes?

What hot American summer and Friends, you run on Friends, was Anchorman. By the way, and then 40 year old Virgin and Knocked Up and working with Jada Apito and role models and Ant-Man that you wrote. I didn't know you wrote Ant-Man. That's crazy.

• 49:09Will Arnett?

No shit. I didn't know that.

• 49:10Sean Hayes?

Yeah. Well, one, one of them, one of the right, one of the rights. It was originally written by Edgar Wright. Who I just worked with, who's the best, the best.

• 49:18Will Arnett?

I love him. We love Edgar. He's a friend, he's a friend of the show.

• 49:22Sean Hayes?

Yeah, he's great. He should come on. Adore him.

• 49:25Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 49:26Speaker 03

So wait, uh, uh, what do you-

• 49:28Jason Bateman?

It might need to be a two-parter.

• 49:30Speaker 03

Yeah, I know, there's so many things.

• 49:31Will Arnett?

I know, shit. You get into the fucking credits, it's crazy.

• 49:35Speaker 03

I know, but anyway, so friendship though- You don't have to get into my credit, honestly. No, it's incredible.

• 49:40Jason Bateman?

The people, they want to know Paul.

• 49:43Will Arnett?

  I know.

• 49:44Jason Bateman?

  You know?

• 49:45Will Arnett?

They want to know about the moments and the movies with the thing-

• 49:47Jason Bateman?

I can't believe they didn't even ask him about-

• 49:49Will Arnett?

The Apatow years. I mean, you and Judd, you and Judd collaborated on so many of those movies that were huge seminal comedies-

• 49:56Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 49:57Will Arnett?

That really kind of changed- You think about it, at that time, when you guys did Forty Year Old Virgin, that really changed the trajectory of comedy films. Like, it kind of went into a, started, it created a whole new lane.

• 50:10Jason Bateman?

A great Judd Apatow, he launched all kinds of folks.

• 50:14Speaker 03

Yeah, well, he's great. The first time I ever met Judd was, it was, it really is a weird thing. I don't know if you guys feel this way about those Steve Martin records, I know we've talked about them a lot, but it seems as if a lot of people in our generation, those albums had a big effect on them.

• 50:32Will Arnett?

  Sure.

• 50:32Speaker 03

Yeah. And, uh, as did Steve Martin in general. And, um, one time I was at a dinner and I was talking about fake names and how it's so, uh, difficult to come up with a perfect, funny, fake name. And I said, "A great example is Gern Blanston," which was from an, uh, an early Steve Martin routine. And someone at the dinner said, "Gern Blanston, oh, that explains Judd Apatow's email address."

• 51:01Jason Bateman?

  Oh, wow.

• 51:02Speaker 03

And I, and I think at this time, there was only AOL. I'm like, "Oh, that's hilarious." Yeah, he's like, "Gern Blanston," I don't think he has this anymore, in case anybody wants to email him. Um, but, uh, anyway, I, I went home and emailed Judd. I'd never met him.

• 51:19Will Arnett?

  No way.

• 51:19Speaker 03

And I said, "Hey, man, nice, nice reference on your email address."

• 51:25Speaker 03

That's amazing. And he emailed me back.

• 51:28Will Arnett?

And that's how you guys started be-

• 51:30Speaker 03

And that's how we met. And then, and then-

• 51:31Sean Hayes?

  Wow, that's amazing.

• 51:33Speaker 03

He emailed me back and said, "Oh, I'm glad you've emailed me. It's nice to connect with you. Now I know who to hit up if I ever need tickets to a new Neil a Butte play." Because I've just done a bunch of Neil a Butte plays. Anyway, we, we, anyway, we kept emailing each other for about a year. We became kind of pen pals. Never met each other. And it wasn't until Anchorman that I actually met him in, in person.

• 51:54Sean Hayes?

  That's crazy.

• 51:55Speaker 03

And when I went into audition, he was there. And it was a little bit like, you know, meeting your, your pen pal that, it's like, "Oh, my God. Wow, I can't believe, there you are. I can touch you."

• 52:06Jason Bateman?

  The person who's been catfishing.

• 52:07Speaker 03

I didn't want to touch him, but-

• 52:08Jason Bateman?

  Instead of being real. Yeah.

• 52:10Sean Hayes?

Um, now that, your character in Anchorman looks very similar to the character in Friendship. Was that on purpose?

• 52:18Speaker 03

No, it wasn't on purpose, although in Friendship, the charac- in the script, the character that I was playing, was originally called Brian, which was the name of my character in Anchorman.

• 52:26Sean Hayes?

  Wow.

• 52:27Speaker 03

And I thought, "Maybe we should change that name just because I also have another mustache." The mustache was just something that seemed like, um, oh, this is the kind of thing that this guy would probably-

• 52:39Sean Hayes?

Yeah, yeah, for sure. It was a weatherman. He's a weatherman. And so, it's really funny. You're so good in it. And the movie is so great.

• 52:45Speaker 03

Well, I, I gotta say, you know, Tim, it's really Tim. And it's, Tim is so funny. And I don't know if you've ever watched I Think You Should Be, which I-

• 52:55Will Arnett?

  I mean, he's a, he's a brilliant, brilliant-

• 52:58Speaker 03

He's incredible. I mean, he really has his own take on all of this stuff. And that was just such a blast to kind of get to work with him and see what he was-

• 53:09Will Arnett?

Have you ever, have you ever seen his show, what is it? Detroit? Is it just called Detroit?

• 53:12Speaker 03

  Detroiters. Yeah.

• 53:13Jason Bateman?

What's his name? Tim, Tim what?

• 53:15Will Arnett?

  Detroiters is incredible.

• 53:17Speaker 03

It's incredible. You would love him, Jason. I remember, I met him when he was a writer on SNL and, and, uh, you know, everyone, even at that time at SNL said, "Oh, well, I mean, this guy, Tim Robinson's the funniest."

• 53:30Sean Hayes?

Yeah. And he directed and wrote and is an actor in this film, Friendship?

• 53:35Speaker 03

He is starring in it. He didn't write it. It might be the only thing I think he's ever done that he didn't write. However, the guy who- Directed it, it's a guy named Andrew D. Young.

• 53:46Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, he's great.

• 53:46Speaker 03

He is, he also wrote it, and he's friends with Tim, and completely captures Tim's voice. I mean, when I read it, I would have sworn that Tim wrote it.

• 53:57Sean Hayes?

Was there a lot of improv on the movie?

• 53:59Speaker 03

I mean, there was some, but you know, it's like, it's funny. When we kind of started, Tim, we were talking about it, and Tim said, "Let's take out all of the jokes." He wanted no jokes.

• 54:12Speaker 03

And so it was very, it wasn't really like this, perceived as this silly comedy. I mean, I know that Andy, the director, said that he envisioned The Master, you know, the Paul Thomas Anderson movie. He was like, "We could do like a weird comedy version, but very strange of that." And, and so it wasn't really, there was certainly some improvisation, but, but you know, neither one of us was trying to really hit anything too funny.

• 54:44Jason Bateman?

And I apologize, is this, can we see this now?

• 54:48Speaker 03

It's coming out, can't see it now. I think it's coming out in, I don't know, April or May.

• 54:53Will Arnett?

Where the fuck did Sean see it?

• 54:55Sean Hayes?

  I got a little screen.

• 54:56Jason Bateman?

He gets a link. So depending on when this, when this airs. Yeah, so April, it's a spring release on this, huh?

• 55:03Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 55:03Jason Bateman?

Spring release. Like all the beautiful things that come out in spring.

• 55:06Speaker 03

Well, we're really excited about it. We're really excited about you, Paul. We love you. You're a tremendous talent.

• 55:12Jason Bateman?

I'm so happy. About your career. I think you're gonna do great.

• 55:16Speaker 03

Thank you. I'm so happy to be doing this, and like, it's such a, you guys are so awesome. Show is so funny. I'm so happy to be on this, finally.

• 55:25Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 55:25Will Arnett?

  I know. It's, yeah, it's a crime.

• 55:28Jason Bateman?

We broke a lean down and we got you here.

• 55:30Speaker 03

Yeah, no, no. Look, you, you, you guys have, you got a lot of people to talk to. I'm honored to be one of them.

• 55:38Jason Bateman?

Well, we're very, very happy that you came.

• 55:40Speaker 03

  Yeah, honored that you came.

• 55:41Jason Bateman?

  For spending some Saturday.

• 55:42Speaker 03

I sure wish my connection was better.

• 55:44Will Arnett?

No, no, no, don't think twice about that.

• 55:46Speaker 03

All right, I don't need to worry about it. I'm not gonna say anything.

• 55:49Will Arnett?

At Honey Hams or your Wi-Fi connection, none of it. Don't, don't think.

• 55:53Speaker 03

  I'm not gonna, yeah, yeah.

• 55:55Jason Bateman?

We didn't talk about, uh, we didn't talk about the Royals. We didn't talk about the Chiefs.

• 55:58Will Arnett?

Yeah, nobody wants to talk about that. Nobody wants to talk about that. You really want to lose the audience? Shut up, baby.

• 56:06Jason Bateman?

Part two, part two, Rudd. You get two U's, you get two episodes.

• 56:09Speaker 03

I tell you who would turn the volume up. Jason Sudeikis and Claire McCaskill. That's who.

• 56:13Will Arnett?

  You're right.

• 56:14Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, they would.

• 56:17Speaker 03

What's Bobby Witt gonna do this year?

• 56:19Will Arnett?

And, and the great, and the great Dan Dees, also of Kansas City fame. The great Dan Dees, friend of the show.

• 56:24Jason Bateman?

  The great Dan Dees.

• 56:25Will Arnett?

Good friend, good friend of ours. Paul Rudd.

• 56:28Speaker 03

  Paulie.

• 56:29Will Arnett?

  You're just...

• 56:29Speaker 03

Good to see you, my friend. All the love to you and Julie and the kids.

• 56:33Will Arnett?

  You're world-class.

• 56:34Jason Bateman?

  Tip-top.

• 56:34Speaker 03

  Thank you.

• 56:35Jason Bateman?

  Tip-top, Paul.

• 56:36Speaker 03

You guys are the best. And, uh, I can't wait to see you in person. It can't come here soon enough.

• 56:43Jason Bateman?

We'll be out there at Candy Shop soon.

• 56:45Will Arnett?

Yeah, we're gonna do a Smartless outing. Let's do a live show from the Candy Shop.

• 56:48Jason Bateman?

  Oh, there we go.

• 56:49Speaker 03

Look, anytime you want. Claude Hoppers for all of you, free. That's a good fake name.

• 56:56Jason Bateman?

I know something. We're sweet on you, Paul.

• 56:59Will Arnett?

  Oh, there it is.

• 57:01Jason Bateman?

  All right.

• 57:02Will Arnett?

  Beautiful button. What a button.

• 57:07Speaker 03

  A candy button.

• 57:08Jason Bateman?

I'm on my way to. I can only believe it.

• 57:15Jason Bateman?

Paulie, have a great day. We love you. Goodbye.

• 57:17Speaker 03

Thank you. Love you guys. Thanks so much.

• 57:19Jason Bateman?

  Yes.

• 57:20Will Arnett?

  Thanks, dude.

• 57:20Speaker 03

  Take care. Bye.

• 57:21Jason Bateman?

  Bye, pal.

• 57:24Jason Bateman?

Paul Rudd. Paul, what can you say?

• 57:27Will Arnett?

I mean, we've said this before about people, but that is an, that is an overdue of overdos.

• 57:31Speaker 03

  Yeah, I know.

• 57:33Will Arnett?

Right? It's almost embarrassing how overdue we are.

• 57:35Jason Bateman?

I feel bad I didn't get into his stuff, you know, like all the...

• 57:38Will Arnett?

You didn't get into anything, Sean. This is one of the least prepared episodes I've ever seen you host. And, and I can't believe a former, a former member, Jason, a former host of the year nominee, remember?

• 57:48Jason Bateman?

Yo, for sure. Well, you know, but if he gets into the sugar like any fucking little three-year-old, you can't count on him.

• 57:55Speaker 03

  Guys, I failed you again.

• 57:57Will Arnett?

I bet they are regretting that nomination a couple of years ago and that gang when they...

• 58:01Speaker 03

Well, aren't you on that board too?

• 58:02Jason Bateman?

  Yeah. The iHeart Radio?

• 58:04Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 58:05Will Arnett?

No. Well, these days I'm only bored when you're hosting, you know what I mean?

• 58:08Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 58:11Jason Bateman?

I do think if, if, uh, if we ever soften on the repeat guest policy you guys are enforcing, like fucking...

• 58:18Will Arnett?

Live show. He'd be a live show.

• 58:19Sean Hayes?

Oh, that would be a good live show.

• 58:20Jason Bateman?

Oh, it would be a good live.

• 58:21Sean Hayes?

We could just go through all its credits and talk about funny stories.

• 58:24Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, we'll go funny stories.

• 58:25Sean Hayes?

  I love that.

• 58:26Jason Bateman?

Yeah, I do like that man a lot.

• 58:27Sean Hayes?

But Willie, remember when he was talking about walking in Canada and he was walking on the, what was it?

• 58:33Jason Bateman?

Here comes a bye. Here comes a bye.

• 58:35Sean Hayes?

  He was walking on the...

• 58:36Jason Bateman?

He went to the bye way.
