• 0:01Chris Williamson?

  Life hacks 108.

• 0:03Speaker 01

  I sold a MacBook.

• 0:04Jonny?

  Drenched in porn, I imagine.

• 0:08Jonny?

Riffing with porn. There are some life hacks that just are so requisite, aren't they, that like...

• 0:13Chris Williamson?

Well, they feel primitive to us now. When I look back at 101 and 102.

• 0:16Jonny?

Just sit next to someone, have your notifications on the phone. You just think, "You are such a basic person. You're just being dragged around by it."

• 0:23Chris Williamson?

Dragged. I want your attention. Excuse me, excuse me.

• 0:26Jonny?

And then you watch them pick up their phone, you're like...

• 0:29Chris Williamson?

  Mate, what are you doing?

• 0:29Jonny?

Were you going to do that before that happened or not?

• 0:31Chris Williamson?

No, no, because someone's messaged now. No, someone hasn't messaged you. Someone's messaged a bunch of other people in a fucking group chat. In general, in general, marginal gains don't matter, but that's the exact reason why marginal gains matter.

• 0:44Speaker 01

Some of these life hacks are dangerous. Have your birthday notifications on for Facebook people.

• 0:49Chris Williamson?

That's brutal if you've got like 5,000 friends now.

• 0:51Speaker 01

It is. So this is the tip, which is use people's birthdays as a chance to review whether you want them in your life or not.

• 1:04Chris Williamson?

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back. I'm joined by Johnny Newserv from PropanFitness.com. And it's life hacks 108. Big one. Uh, thank you very much to the Protein Works for sponsoring the last episode. If you want to grab any of the products that we mentioned in that episode, it is in the show notes below. And today, the lovely people from Your Best Self are giving away two six-minute diaries. You'll have heard us speak about the six-minute diary before. You'll have heard us speak about them before. Uh, if you want to get into journaling or you already do it and you want to level it up, or you've already got a six-minute diary and you just want a new one, there's two of them available here, one in blue and one in pink. And we're going to give those away.

• 1:42Jonny?

I didn't know they had came in colours.

• 1:44Chris Williamson?

Well, to the lucky boy and girl who...

• 1:46Jonny?

  Well, happy one, girl, then.

• 1:47Chris Williamson?

If you want to enter, all that you need to do is leave a review on iTunes. I'm not going to say that it has to be five stars because I'm pretty certain that's against their terms of service. But, yeah, I mean, let's, let's be realistic here. If you leave a one star, it's going to be less likely that you're going to get the diary. But you don't have to leave, you can leave whatever you want. Um, head on to iTunes. And leave a review on the Modern Wisdom Podcast. And if you are listening on any other device, go on a MacBook, borrow someone else's MacBook, log in on.

• 2:19Speaker 01

  Sort it out.

• 2:20Chris Williamson?

Sort your life out. Yeah. We'll be giving away something on the next one, maybe something that's on Stitcher or whatever people on Android use. So yeah, we also said that we were going to choose a winner.

• 2:33Speaker 01

Right, I was just about to ask that.

• 2:34Chris Williamson?

From last time for £150 of Protein Works. And I think it needs to be Daz Charles, otherwise known as Darren Morley, on YouTube, who suggested the Aldi Low Fat Ready Meal range. And most ready meals are really crap. I tried these out and I have to say, very impressed.

• 2:55Speaker 01

  Lovely, really.

• 2:56Chris Williamson?

  Fantastic.

• 2:56Speaker 01

So glad Aldi have got on the, I think.

• 2:58Chris Williamson?

He sent, he actually sent in some suggestions of which ones he liked the most.

• 3:04Speaker 01

Yeah, I remember seeing that. There was three in the comment.

• 3:06Chris Williamson?

Five Bean Chili, Sweet Potato Curry and Moroccan Vegetable Stew. He also suggested microdosing LSD, which.

• 3:15Speaker 01

  Terrible idea.

• 3:17Chris Williamson?

What was it that you said? Eat, it's the equivalent of eating some nuts and bolts in an effort to try and up your iron content.

• 3:23Speaker 01

Yeah, it's exactly that. Like, it's such a sledgehammer of a thing to do.

• 3:27Chris Williamson?

To take a little bit off.

• 3:28Speaker 01

Like, I know it's really popular and fancy in Silicon Valley, the same way that like avocado is, is good for the gym and stuff, but, but, but it is a very powerful, potentially destabilising molecule that we don't, hasn't really been like rigorously tested with people. At least caffeine, you know what you're getting. And it ultimately, the people say they take their microdose and it has a similar effect to caffeine. So.

• 3:56Chris Williamson?

  Just take caffeine.

• 3:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:57Chris Williamson?

Um, stop it. Other, other notable ones, Sarah Charlton.

• 4:01Speaker 01

  Sorry Darren, but.

• 4:02Chris Williamson?

  Stop it.

• 4:03Speaker 01

Can't be, can't be dealing with this.

• 4:04Chris Williamson?

Other notable ones, Sarah Charlton Kretschmer, when taking pills, chin up for tablets and chin down for capsules, because tablets sink while capsules float.

• 4:17Speaker 01

That's someone who knows their tablets.

• 4:19Chris Williamson?

Know their fucking tablets. Someone suggested.

• 4:21Speaker 01

What? Why is it making any difference?

• 4:23Chris Williamson?

Well, because you need to get, so if you have something that floats and you tilt your head back, it's going to be at the front of your mouth while you're trying to swallow water. Whereas if you do it with something that sinks, it'll be fine. And if you do the reverse, it'll be fine. Although tilting my head down and trying to swallow is quite difficult.

• 4:39Jonny?

I don't think the buoyancy of the capsule is stronger than your capacity.

• 4:44Chris Williamson?

I'm annoying Chris. Diet hack, low soup and Riveetas.

• 4:49Jonny?

  No, no.

• 4:50Chris Williamson?

Yeah. Get some powder free nitrile gloves for the kitchen for all meat prep. So no hand washing is needed. We already talked about this. You just need to use scissors, single hand.

• 5:00Jonny?

  Still gonna handle the meat.

• 5:02Speaker 01

I never touch meat. I just, I just dip it into my pressure cooker. It's already chopped. You can buy, you can now buy pre chopped meat. The butchers have their nitrile free gloves.

• 5:12Chris Williamson?

Life hack, life hack, dry socks quickly by putting a hairdryer in them, drying about 20 to 30 seconds.

• 5:19Speaker 01

  Hilarious as well.

• 5:20Jonny?

So I think, does that break a hair? You know how sometimes hair dryers?

• 5:23Speaker 01

Yeah, I think it does. I think like it would blow up and yeah.

• 5:26Jonny?

  Big bada boom.

• 5:27Speaker 01

Some of these life hacks are dangerous.

• 5:29Chris Williamson?

Yeah. My, my advice would be if you want to find out more of these submitted life hacks, heads to life hacks 107. Link will be in the show notes below.

• 5:36Speaker 01

L D ready meals? Yes. Macro dosing LSD.

• 5:39Chris Williamson?

Yeah, you need to have a look on it.

• 5:40Speaker 01

  And blowing up your hairdryer.

• 5:41Chris Williamson?

You need to go on YouTube to have a look at these. But that's enough about the past. It's time to talk.

• 5:47Jonny?

No one said anything for you to have to do. I specifically said, please someone send us one for you.

• 5:51Chris Williamson?

I'm pretty certain there was a few and most of them were by AirPods.

• 5:56Jonny?

You know how close we were to buying new AirPods?

• 5:58Speaker 01

You know how close? I would have been very upset. Well, I would have sold them on Facebook Marketplace at like a 20 pound loss.

• 6:04Jonny?

That would have upset me, Chris.

• 6:06Speaker 01

  Right.

• 6:06Chris Williamson?

I'm gonna start because you're derailing it, yeah. Um, I'm gonna start today and first one I'm gonna go for is whiten your teeth. So whitening your teeth is kind of become a caricature of itself of like someone who probably uses brill cream still and. It has that that hair. Like, yeah, like a quiff at the front, like the guys at the inbetweeners. However, I am going to propose that whitening your teeth or making your teeth whiter is probably one of the easiest ways to make yourself just have a bit more confidence and look a bit more polished and attractive. Both in meetings for business, personal, like to the other sex or to the same sex. Um, it's just

• 6:51Chris Williamson?

for the people that I know that do it, I notice, because I do, I notice of the people that have like over white teeth or particularly white teeth. And that just the way that their smile is put together to me looks much more well polished, literally. Um, if you are interested in how you can do that, I would advise, if you want to spend money, if you want to spend big money, then um, the Cosmetic Dental Clinic in Newcastle has my buddy David working there. I'm sure that he'll sort you out, but a much easier way is Crest 3D White Strips, which you can just buy on the internet. I don't think they're available on Amazon in the UK. But Crest 3D White Strips, you can get like a two pack for fifteen quid or twenty quid.

• 7:34Chris Williamson?

And you just leave them on for about three to six hours and you'll have like noticeably whiter teeth. Don't fuck about with whitening toothpaste or anything which isn't bleach, basically, as far as I can tell from someone who knows what he's talking about and does the teeth of half of Newcastle Football Team, David. Anything which isn't bleach is mostly bollocks. Laser whitening is bollocks. Those little like USB sticks that you put in your mouth that you see Conor McGregor promoting is also bollocks. Just. I think I've seen you with a blue thing in your mouth, like a blue. That was when, that was when a lady used to come around to the office and do it. Right. And as soon as David was like, mate, what are you doing? You're just wasting your time. So she, this lady would come up and do all of the lads in the office for free, like just. If you post on social media.

• 8:19Chris Williamson?

Yeah. And I was like, oh, brilliant. And David was like. Do you actually think that your teeth look that much whiter compared them with when you bleach them? I'm like, um, yeah, it might be a bit placebo going on there.

• 8:29Jonny?

  Um.

• 8:30Chris Williamson?

He's like, no, bollocks, don't do it.

• 8:31Jonny?

So I have tried this before.

• 8:33Chris Williamson?

  Okay.

• 8:34Jonny?

And I did it with my dentist and it was expensive and it gave me over sensitive teeth.

• 8:41Chris Williamson?

That happens. So the way to get around, the way to get around over sensitive teeth, best way to do it, and this is what David would say is buy some Sensodyne Rapid Relief. Put by gum shield, put a little bit Sensodyne Rapid Relief in the gum shield, pop them over your teeth for about ten minutes, then take it out.

• 9:00Chris Williamson?

Dry your teeth, so they need to be dry.

• 9:01Jonny?

  Um hum.

• 9:02Chris Williamson?

Put your strips on, take it off, put the gum shield back on again, because it's the dentine, which is what's actually sensitive.

• 9:10Jonny?

  Um.

• 9:10Chris Williamson?

But that helps to reduce the sensitivity and just keep on smashing Sensodyne.

• 9:15Jonny?

Think, and this is probably wrong, but this is what I, my basic understanding is that it, because your teeth are porous.

• 9:20Chris Williamson?

  Yep.

• 9:21Jonny?

Sensitive toothpaste makes it less porous or blocks the holes.

• 9:25Chris Williamson?

  Yep.

• 9:25Jonny?

And then the acid doesn't seep into the.

• 9:28Chris Williamson?

Or the paint, the, so the bleach doesn't.

• 9:31Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 9:31Chris Williamson?

Get into the dentine as easily. Yeah.

• 9:33Jonny?

  Right.

• 9:33Chris Williamson?

Um, but that's, I've got hypersensitive teeth as well.

• 9:36Jonny?

Right, and you're all right with it?

• 9:37Chris Williamson?

I just need to be careful with how long I use it for.

• 9:40Jonny?

  Right.

• 9:40Chris Williamson?

As long as I don't absolutely pound it.

• 9:42Jonny?

So I, I have really bad memories of the dentist told me to leave them on overnight.

• 9:45Chris Williamson?

  Um.

• 9:46Jonny?

So put this stuff in a gum shield.

• 9:47Chris Williamson?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 9:48Jonny?

And just the next morning was.

• 9:50Chris Williamson?

  Agonizing.

• 9:50Jonny?

Couldn't drink water, it was awful.

• 9:52Chris Williamson?

So I use an overnight gel for three hours.

• 9:55Jonny?

  Oh, wow.

• 9:56Chris Williamson?

Um, so I'm using it for less than half the time. And even that gives me little twinges, but that with the Sensodyne, I'm like, I'm sweet. Um, to set time away and you'll learn, like, once you've done it once. But yeah, like after, you know, three treatments maybe is so much whiter. It's just, I think it's a, it's a good.

• 10:12Jonny?

So I agree. I think it's an easy upgrade.

• 10:14Chris Williamson?

  Hundred percent.

• 10:14Jonny?

  Make it work.

• 10:15Chris Williamson?

  Hundred percent.

• 10:16Jonny?

Yeah, if this is the sort of thing that you might have a concern.

• 10:18Speaker 01

  I've done the, the.

• 10:20Chris Williamson?

  Crest.

• 10:21Speaker 01

Yeah, not, not Crest, it's with a coffee one, but yeah, um, quitting coffee as well, like. Just stopping the things that are staining your teeth in the first place is one step.

• 10:31Jonny?

Milk in coffee reduce the staining?

• 10:35Jonny?

Because I, whenever I spoke in the dance to about this, they would say avoid black coffee. And when I say, does that mean adding milk removes it? And they go, yeah.

• 10:42Speaker 01

  Okay, I'd imagine so.

• 10:43Jonny?

David, if you're listening, can you please come on YouTube, please? Thank you, mate. Right. Johnny, I haven't hot potatoed you this time. You knew it was coming. It's a bit hot. It's a warm potato. Always coming around in this. Held for a while. Yep. Uh, have we mentioned wifi scales before?

• 11:02Speaker 01

  Maybe in Life Hacks one.

• 11:04Jonny?

I think it was one on one.

• 11:06Speaker 01

  But I think it's worth.

• 11:07Jonny?

Worth bringing up again. Okay, so they're now Nokia. Nokia bought Withings or Wi Things, but wifi scales are, so if you weigh yourself every day.

• 11:17Speaker 01

Did you say Primark or Primark?

• 11:19Jonny?

  Primark.

• 11:19Speaker 01

Yeah, me too. I think people that say Primark are psychopaths. And people that leave suds on the dish after they.

• 11:26Jonny?

  Psychopath.

• 11:27Speaker 01

  Yeah. Sorry.

• 11:28Jonny?

No, it's okay. I agree. Both, both interesting points. Um, so I think everybody should be weighing themselves daily, regardless of your goal. Um, we were speaking about.

• 11:38Speaker 01

Everyone's goal is just bodybuilding, isn't it?

• 11:40Jonny?

Everyone has a body. Everyone has a bodybuilding goal, they just don't know. We were speaking about this recently that it's one of the, it's like a health marker that, you know, a G P might ask about, for example, you know, have you lost any weight recently?

• 11:51Speaker 01

  Like, here's my trend.

• 11:52Jonny?

If you're weighing yourself, like, once every four days, like, how the hell do you know? You should have a load of random data points. But anyway, so the problem with weighing yourself normally is you stand on the scales, you step off the scales, you get in the shower, you have a poo. And you're like, wow, what is it again? And you can't remember. Withing scales or wifi scales, just take it into an app and graph it. And they're a hundred quid, but like.

• 12:14Speaker 01

Such a brilliant feeling to stand on the scales and know that it's just gone.

• 12:17Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 12:18Speaker 01

  Into your, into your MyFitnessPal.

• 12:20Jonny?

I've had mine for five years now and they're still working. I thought it was broken. They were, they're on and off. Right.

• 12:26Speaker 01

  I also like.

• 12:27Jonny?

  They are still working.

• 12:28Speaker 01

You know the precise weight of your cleaner as well.

• 12:31Jonny?

Yeah. So, so, okay, so we have just refreshed the scales. So they've been there for five years. So this, the reason that it's on there is I've just re-upped and bought the same scales again. And interestingly. Five years, they haven't. They haven't changed them.

• 12:45Speaker 01

  They're just Nokia now.

• 12:46Jonny?

  Isn't that fascinating?

• 12:47Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 12:48Jonny?

That means they've got it right. Yeah, so they're exactly the same. They measure like, you've got them as well, haven't you? You do not feel remiss about that? That they haven't changed? Yeah. No, it means I've bought the right product. They measure like the C O two, my body fat percentage, uh they measure it, they tell me what the weather's going to be. They graph my weight over a course of a day. But anyway, so Beck has a profile and I have a profile. And there's a few unassigned measures that don't fit, like if it's like ninety kilos, like well, that's not Johnny, he's heavier than that. Yeah, whatever. There were loads of eighty kilo entries.

• 13:19Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 13:19Jonny?

Um, always Tuesday at one P M. What the fuck is this?

• 13:25Jonny?

And you start to like, the, the, the first thought to like panic, I'm like, who's getting into my bedroom?

• 13:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:30Jonny?

  Cleaner.

• 13:32Speaker 01

  Unbelievable.

• 13:33Jonny?

So I have a, not only do I have a few entry points, I actually have a graph of my. Um, she has no idea that I have, you know, and it's not, I, I feel voyeuristic, but I can't help it, it's being charted on my phone.

• 13:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:46Jonny?

  You know, it's like.

• 13:47Speaker 01

And you, you might pick up on a red flag of the cleaner's health before she does because of a trend, a trend line in her weight.

• 13:53Jonny?

And you might be like. Dylan, have you noticed that your C O two or clear?

• 13:57Speaker 01

It's actually, so, um, when, we had a lecturer a while ago, he said he saw a woman in a bowling alley. Well, he was like, I, I was out bowling with my children and I saw a woman with prognathia, which we discussed in the last episode. That, um, and she, she had some thickened wrists and I, and I thought she looks a bit Akromegalic, actually.

• 14:21Speaker 01

And I said, hello, I, I, I hope, sorry to disturb you, but I'm an endocrinologist and, um. You, you have a few of the features of something we call acromegaly, which is excess growth hormone production in it. And, and she was like, oh, this is the first time I've heard of that. And I said, well, I think you should probably go to see a doctor about it. And she did, and it was great, um.

• 14:41Jonny?

  Did she have acromegaly?

• 14:43Speaker 01

  Apparently so. And then also.

• 14:44Jonny?

  Just laser.

• 14:45Speaker 01

Sadie sat on the bus next to someone and smelt bacterial vaginosis on the woman next to her and just said, I'm really sorry, but. You like.

• 14:55Chris Williamson?

  You have vaginosis.

• 14:56Speaker 01

I think I'd rather someone told me that my vagina smelled than.

• 15:01Chris Williamson?

How did you know it was vaginal, a vaginal problem? Signature.

• 15:05Speaker 01

It honestly, it is such a distinctive smell. It like.

• 15:08Chris Williamson?

  Can you describe it?

• 15:09Speaker 01

It's like um someone's buried a fish in a warm, warm climate, wrapped in some like cheap squeezy cheese. You know the squeezy cheese that you get in like a toothpaste tube?

• 15:20Chris Williamson?

So it hits some of the high notes on smell then?

• 15:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 15:23Chris Williamson?

It's not a low smell, it's not mosky.

• 15:24Speaker 01

  No, no, it's it's it's a full spectrum smell.

• 15:27Chris Williamson?

  Oh, yeah.

• 15:27Speaker 01

And it digs into your nose and it does not go away. I viewed a flat a few years ago.

• 15:32Chris Williamson?

You told me about this, where someone who'd been in it before had had this.

• 15:35Speaker 01

Well, she, so there was a, there was a girl sat in bed with her boyfriend. And I went into the room and it's just, the air is thick with bacterial vaginosis.

• 15:44Speaker 01

And like, I felt I was like, I feel sorry for the guy, like.

• 15:46Chris Williamson?

  He's trapped.

• 15:47Speaker 01

But he should, he should tell her, she'd be like, you know.

• 15:49Chris Williamson?

  Maybe he's.

• 15:50Speaker 01

  For both of our sakes.

• 15:51Chris Williamson?

  Maybe he's become like.

• 15:52Speaker 01

  A custom to it.

• 15:53Chris Williamson?

Yeah. What is it? Just a bacterial infection?

• 15:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 15:56Chris Williamson?

Is it Stockholm syndrome that people have? He's got like the bacterial version of Scott Stockholm syndrome. He loves the bacteria.

• 16:02Speaker 01

Thirty six hours, you'd have like, you know, like little phantom whiffs and you're like, oh, man, I need like.

• 16:08Chris Williamson?

  Telling you, man.

• 16:08Speaker 01

Shower of bleach and everything, you just can't get it out.

• 16:10Chris Williamson?

What if they just had wifi scales, this wouldn't have happened?

• 16:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 16:13Chris Williamson?

  Uh, what is cliteromegaly negrum?

• 16:18Speaker 01

  Large, black, clitoris.

• 16:20Chris Williamson?

What causes it? Bruising? Snatch? Bruising. Snatch.

• 16:24Speaker 01

  Really snatch.

• 16:25Chris Williamson?

Snatch causes cliteromegaly negrum. And if surely that's only if, because it shouldn't, it shouldn't be hitting there, should it? Pubic bone, man. You've got to make contact.

• 16:33Speaker 01

You're not be higher than that.

• 16:37Speaker 01

So does that mean every Olympic weightlifter?

• 16:39Chris Williamson?

Come on, come on this. Has a, has a, has a, has a black, a big black clitoris.

• 16:43Speaker 01

  That's the front raise, Johnny.

• 16:45Chris Williamson?

  Um, so I'm, I'm, I'm.

• 16:47Speaker 01

Keep it close in. Um, that was, there was too much.

• 16:50Chris Williamson?

Glanzomegaly negrum is a black gland, glands.

• 16:57Speaker 01

I wonder whether that has any Google results. Probably not.

• 17:00Chris Williamson?

  But best not to look.

• 17:02Speaker 01

Search for glanzomegaly negrum. There's no way. I'm sorry.

• 17:09Chris Williamson?

No, no, we're not doing it.

• 17:12Speaker 01

  Glans o' Megall, evening Graham.

• 17:20Speaker 01

My Siri just never plays ball with me, to be honest.

• 17:24Speaker 01

Johnny, I don't think we could have derailed your life hack any further, so.

• 17:28Jonny?

  Evening Graham.

• 17:30Chris Williamson?

  Evening Graham. Right, you're up.

• 17:33Jonny?

  Wifi scales.

• 17:34Chris Williamson?

  Wifi.

• 17:35Jonny?

  For Christ's sake, wifi scales.

• 17:37Speaker 01

So this was a problem George had recently. He was like, I've been weighing myself, but I can't, you know, I want to have a screen-free morning and I don't want to have to go and log it or whatever. And so I'm gonna keep a pen and paper next to my scales and I said, why then?

• 17:50Chris Williamson?

  Wifi scales.

• 17:51Jonny?

They're a hundred quid, but they'll last you a long time.

• 17:53Speaker 01

Well worthwhile. Um, so mine is UPAC. Have I, is this familiar?

• 18:01Jonny?

  Is this like Toby?

• 18:03Speaker 01

Sort of. So have you ever been on a YouTube video?

• 18:05Jonny?

So it is actually like, I was being sarcastic. It is actually like.

• 18:08Chris Williamson?

It's the one where it gives you it from a different country when it says not available in your country. Yes, we've already done it.

• 18:13Speaker 01

  I've done this one. Okay.

• 18:14Jonny?

  Next, next please.

• 18:15Speaker 01

For anyone that doesn't know what that is, you're watching a YouTube video and it goes like, can't see it, just replace the word tube with pack, P A K. And it will unlock the video for you.

• 18:24Chris Williamson?

Unbelievable that someone's managed to mirror the entire YouTube site. URL for URL.

• 18:30Speaker 01

I'm so glad they have because it's so like.

• 18:32Chris Williamson?

How many videos do you try and watch that are unavailable in your country? It must happen to me twice a year.

• 18:37Jonny?

Yeah, it's not, it's not very often.

• 18:38Speaker 01

It happens loads to me. It's so panicky.

• 18:40Jonny?

It's the sort of thing you're watching.

• 18:41Speaker 01

Uh, okay, so I've got another YouTube related one, which is.

• 18:45Jonny?

  Just like Toby.

• 18:47Speaker 01

So, well, so you have a, if you're like me, you have a lot of videos that you want to, like a lot of lectures or audiobooks or whatever that you want to add to your list, your queue.

• 18:59Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 19:00Speaker 01

And the watch later function on YouTube is pretty rickety. So instead just set up a playlist that says, that's called lectures or listening. Add things to it and then you can get YouTube Resumer, which is a Chrome extension that every time you go on a long video, so like sometimes you might have an audiobook, so which is a video of five hours long. You go on it and it just jumps to the spot that you were at previously. Why that's not a native function of YouTube, I have no idea, but.

• 19:25Chris Williamson?

  It does with some videos.

• 19:26Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 19:27Speaker 01

  Does it?

• 19:27Chris Williamson?

It does with a lot of my videos.

• 19:28Jonny?

Or if you go to watch something that you've already been watching.

• 19:31Speaker 01

It jumps to it. Oh, so maybe it is a native function now.

• 19:34Jonny?

But maybe another plugin that you have is blocking that feature.

• 19:38Speaker 01

  Maybe.

• 19:39Jonny?

It's like, well, you have to take a, take medicine to counteract the side effect of the medicine.

• 19:43Chris Williamson?

The medicine you've been taking, yeah.

• 19:44Speaker 01

So, okay, so we've just found out that I've just scuppered myself.

• 19:48Chris Williamson?

I think that's, I think for some videos, definitely it doesn't do it. For some videos, it seems to.

• 19:53Speaker 01

So, okay, so again, rickety, you just wanna make sure it's.

• 19:56Chris Williamson?

Do you know who the, the, the only person in the room that we need to refer to about this is the only one who can't speak on camera, which is V M D.

• 20:03Jonny?

He can signal to us or explain via dance.

• 20:07Chris Williamson?

Interpretive dance, video, dance, Dean, B D D. Uh, right, my one. Um, so I've just, I've just been away on holiday quite a bit. So I've been going to new restaurants, different cafes and things like that. When you go, especially, I've been to some places that have got,

• 20:26Chris Williamson?

quite culturally not sensitive, but food where you think, I bet there's something mint on this menu, but I need to fucking ask. I need to work out like very, very carefully what it is. Rome, Boston, where there's a lot of seafood. Um, Santa Monica and Venice in L A. So my life hack is ask the waiter for the most popular dishes. So ask the waiter for suggestions about what to order. When they come over and they bring you, they ask you for your drinks after you've looked perplexed at the menu for a little while.

• 20:56Speaker 01

Would you, if you were, if the waiter said, I can tell you the most popular dish, or I can tell you the mo, the, the best dish?

• 21:03Chris Williamson?

Well, I'd ask what, what, what's.

• 21:05Jonny?

  Opinion.

• 21:05Speaker 01

Well, talking to him, who is a, you know, he, he knows the restaurant.

• 21:09Chris Williamson?

And then I've got two, I've got two choices and one of them may meet my tastes and one that may not. One of them might have loads of quinoa in it and I'm gonna fuck off.

• 21:18Speaker 01

I see. Just because there's a lot of things that many people do, which are a bad decision.

• 21:24Chris Williamson?

Yeah, but not usually with food. It's the same reason why going to a restaurant which has lots of people in it is usually a good idea. Like when you're on holiday, actually, that can be another part of the life hack, that when you're looking for somewhere to eat abroad, like, yeah, you can trip advisory, Google, like, review it. But especially if you're walking down a street, like Rome's perfect example of this is just restaurants and cafes all over the place. Just look for the one that's the busiest. Like the one that's the busiest must have something about it. Unless there's, uh, it's the first time it's ever been busy and everyone else has brought this heuristic into play.

• 21:56Speaker 01

It'll, it'll be like, um, the way that Reddit works, where things just get this critical mass from

• 22:02Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 22:02Speaker 01

an early stage and then everyone just starts.

• 22:05Chris Williamson?

But yeah, so ask the waiter for suggestions. I've done this with drinks and food in four cities over the last month. And every time that I've asked them for suggestions, it's been fantastic. Yeah, really good. Got a weird uh steamed octopus pasta in Rome. That I would have never ever ordered, most popular dish in the place, had a um lobster roll. So if you can imagine um lobster meat that's been completely pulled free of all of the shell, put into a heavily, heavily buttered, very soft bap.

• 22:46Chris Williamson?

Like, that doesn't sound like a gourmet dish, but was in terms of taste and texture was just.

• 22:51Jonny?

Like a, like a soft bun?

• 22:54Chris Williamson?

  But massive, yeah.

• 22:55Jonny?

  Right.

• 22:56Chris Williamson?

  Like that.

• 22:57Jonny?

  I think I know.

• 22:57Chris Williamson?

Really heavily buttered. That was unbelievable as well. Um yeah, it's just, it's really good.

• 23:04Jonny?

  It's outsourced that decision.

• 23:05Chris Williamson?

Outsource the decision, yeah. Or if you're with, especially if you're with people that go there all the time, so what would you order?

• 23:10Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 23:10Chris Williamson?

Or what does everyone else order? What a good drink. And you're just asking the, like, if anyone knows, it's the waiter or the waitress.

• 23:17Speaker 01

It probably guarantees that it's fresher as well. If you order something rogue on the menu, that might have been sitting around for a long time, whereas something with a high turnover.

• 23:24Chris Williamson?

Well, then, there's no way that the waiter or waitress is going to suggest you something which is then going to result in you going, excuse me, this doesn't taste very fresh. They're gonna have a degree of, like, existential protectionism.

• 23:39Jonny?

Unless they've been told to sell a lot of the specials.

• 23:41Chris Williamson?

Fuck, we can't get rid of this.

• 23:43Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 23:43Chris Williamson?

  Three week old lab.

• 23:44Jonny?

I'm always, I always think that that's how specials in restaurants work.

• 23:47Speaker 01

I think it is, yeah. It's like, what's gonna expire next? Hmm. Well, why else would they do?

• 23:53Jonny?

  What a country.

• 23:54Chris Williamson?

  Anyway, Johnny.

• 23:55Jonny?

Keep it, keep it fresh, isn't it? Um, so I have one that's about Facebook ads. Can I say that?

• 24:02Chris Williamson?

  Yeah, sure.

• 24:03Jonny?

So Facebook have just launched a, and this is interesting for everybody, I suppose. They have a new feature where you can press on any post you see on Facebook, you can press in the top right.

• 24:14Chris Williamson?

  The I.

• 24:15Jonny?

  The I.

• 24:18Jonny?

It's something, it's something in the top right, pressing that, you press, why am I seeing this post or why am I seeing this ad? If it's why am I seeing this ad, you can see, so if you're a business owner, you have a Facebook page. You can see who your competitors are targeting and you can see which targeting brackets you fall into. Or if it's a page, you can select all kinds of options with that page or with that person. So does what you can just live customize your Facebook on Facebook now.

• 24:43Chris Williamson?

  You do that mobile?

• 24:46Jonny?

  So there you go.

• 24:47Speaker 01

That is useful, rather than just being at the mercy of, because the part of the reason that we block our news feeds.

• 24:53Jonny?

It's because there's stuff on there you don't want.

• 24:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 24:55Jonny?

So if you see ads or see posts.

• 24:57Speaker 01

Like if you could curate your, your news.

• 24:59Jonny?

Well, that's essentially what it's allowing you to do.

• 25:00Speaker 01

  Have it dictated to you.

• 25:02Jonny?

You, you can, you can go on a, on a post from a business page, let's say, or um, an influencer that you want to hear more of.

• 25:08Chris Williamson?

  Mm hmm.

• 25:09Jonny?

And bump that person's, well, so you can do with organic and ads now.

• 25:12Speaker 01

I'd like, it's one of my biggest gripes with Instagram, for example, that it only seems to show you posts from the same five people, even if you're.

• 25:20Chris Williamson?

  Hmm.

• 25:20Speaker 01

Even if you follow eight hundred. So whereas if you could choose the proportions that you see people in, rather than just like this kind of circular thing, exactly like the restaurant.

• 25:30Chris Williamson?

Do you have the seven hundred and ninety five people are obviously just posting shit content that doesn't, doesn't tip over that.

• 25:35Speaker 01

  The algorithm.

• 25:36Chris Williamson?

What do you two consume? What platforms or channels do you consume? Like, do you, do you consume Facebook or Instagram?

• 25:44Speaker 01

  At the moment, just.

• 25:45Chris Williamson?

  Nothing, just medicine.

• 25:47Jonny?

  Mess.

• 25:48Speaker 01

The anti is my biggest social media.

• 25:50Jonny?

Normally, what would you? Like, would you find yourself spending a long time on Instagram or a long time?

• 25:55Chris Williamson?

For me, in, in Instagram is my biggest time sink.

• 25:57Jonny?

  Right.

• 25:58Chris Williamson?

But that's where I drive my most traffic as well, so.

• 26:00Jonny?

  It's business, but also.

• 26:02Chris Williamson?

That's, the line gets very, very blurred.

• 26:04Jonny?

It's, I think Instagram is easiest to just like zone out on.

• 26:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 26:08Chris Williamson?

  The guy that created.

• 26:09Speaker 01

  It's like window shopping.

• 26:10Chris Williamson?

The, the guy that created infinite feed says it's the biggest regret of his life.

• 26:14Jonny?

  Wow, God. Created infinite feed.

• 26:17Chris Williamson?

Uh yeah, the infinite scroll feed, like it says it's the the.

• 26:20Speaker 01

It is dangerous, isn't it? Infinite screen is like, cause yeah.

• 26:24Jonny?

Be there forever. Uh Seth. Is there no end, is there no end to the feed?

• 26:27Chris Williamson?

Well, the you can actually get to a point on Instagram, it says you're fully caught up now. So on.

• 26:32Speaker 01

I wonder who really gets to that point.

• 26:35Chris Williamson?

Well, on Modern Wisdom Life, it only follows one person and that's me. So I very quickly catch up with all of my own posts when I go on to Modern Wisdom Life.

• 26:43Jonny?

  Right.

• 26:43Chris Williamson?

Um for the people who are tagging Modern Wisdom Life on Instagram, I I really appreciate it. Um but just tag me instead, cause I never go on. And I go on to see such and such mentioned you in their story, such and such mentioned you in their story.

• 26:56Speaker 01

  It's always.

• 26:57Chris Williamson?

Three days ago, I can't see it. So at the very least, tag me as well. Thank you. Uh.

• 27:02Speaker 01

  Seth.

• 27:03Chris Williamson?

  What can you do?

• 27:03Speaker 01

Mine's also a Facebook related one, which is have your um birthday notifications on for Facebook people.

• 27:13Jonny?

  Where do you find them?

• 27:15Speaker 01

Um you can either set it to link with your calendar or just have it on the right side of your thing, even if you're blocking your feed. Yeah.

• 27:21Chris Williamson?

That's brutal if you've got like five thousand friends.

• 27:23Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 27:24Speaker 01

It is. So this is the tip, which is use people's birthdays as a chance to review whether you want them in your life or not. So.

• 27:30Jonny?

  That's a fantastic tip.

• 27:31Speaker 01

So when they come up, you're just like, oh, actually.

• 27:34Jonny?

  Fuck off.

• 27:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:35Jonny?

  That's fantastic.

• 27:37Speaker 01

Because I think a birthday is a polarizing thing, cause it instantly is like, right, I need to make the decision. Do is this someone that I need to go and say happy birthday to, in which case they are good and important in your life? Do you not really care, in which case, should you delete them? Or are they someone that actively, if you were to say happy birthday to them, they would think it was weird? And so a lot of people.

• 27:57Chris Williamson?

There's some people in there who I need to have on my Facebook, but I also don't want to wish happy birthday to. There's some that fall in that category.

• 28:03Speaker 01

  To have on your Facebook.

• 28:04Chris Williamson?

  Yeah, just.

• 28:05Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 28:05Chris Williamson?

  Mandating.

• 28:06Jonny?

I think the hack ahead of that is just don't be precious about your Facebook. I think people just need to stop being so precious about their social media.

• 28:12Speaker 01

As in like just have as many friends as like someone around you like.

• 28:15Jonny?

Don't people who like think their Instagram or their their social media like friends or whatever is an extension of real life? And like, it can be if you choose it to be, but it can also just not be.

• 28:24Speaker 01

Well, we talked about this the other day with kids and Snapchat, you know, where like, is it the? Yeah, it was. You were saying about the like the the flame streak.

• 28:31Chris Williamson?

Strict, yeah. So I unfollowed everyone on Twitter.

• 28:35Jonny?

  Did you?

• 28:36Chris Williamson?

Everybody about a year ago and then have very, very slowly, I'm on, I follow sixty people now. And I have to say that my life, especially on Twitter, which is high volume stuff, uh, is bliss. Life's absolutely bliss.

• 28:51Jonny?

  I just don't use Twitter.

• 28:52Chris Williamson?

But my point is that if you, if you were to have that degree of curatedness with all of your social media.

• 28:58Jonny?

The other day, um, Becca said, oh, you know, such and such. I'm like, what?

• 29:05Chris Williamson?

  Friend in common.

• 29:06Jonny?

No, I don't. She was like, oh, it's this person on Facebook who you, you meet your friend with. I'm like, don't know. But I said to her, I bet you, I know who has more friends than me on Facebook, Chris.

• 29:15Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 29:15Jonny?

And you, you, and you have.

• 29:16Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 29:17Jonny?

  I don't know, a crazy number.

• 29:18Chris Williamson?

Yeah, five accounts and each one of them's going about five thousand, yeah.

• 29:21Jonny?

So I have fifteen hundred friends, but I maybe know, I maybe speak to twenty of them.

• 29:26Chris Williamson?

Yeah. There was a period when it was a useful resource, but I think for me now, it's, it doesn't really work as well. I can't scale individual connections with people like that. Uh, but it is still a powerful resource. Like when we're doing recruitment and stuff for freshers, we're still telling the boys like nothing beats a big Facebook for the kind of work that we do. Personal face-to-face networking for a geographically localized event.

• 29:50Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 29:51Chris Williamson?

  With like big Facebook accounts.

• 29:52Jonny?

  Well, they message people directly.

• 29:54Chris Williamson?

Exactly, yeah. Um, so I'm gonna do one and this is one actually, which is from.

• 29:59Jonny?

You've not missed up, oh no, sorry, sorry, sorry.

• 30:01Chris Williamson?

Don't you worry. This is one which is actually from V M D. So he sent me this the other week.

• 30:07Jonny?

  V M D.

• 30:09Chris Williamson?

Which is messenger dot com. So I didn't know that messenger dot com is Facebook Messenger without Facebook.

• 30:17Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 30:18Chris Williamson?

So I don't need to be on Facebook getting distracted by getting tagged in notifications and invites to events and pages and just general stuff, auto-scrolling news, uh, or playing videos and stuff like that. But messenger dot com allows me to, in the same way that WhatsApp web works for that. So I now have a tab of all of my stuff. Which is, I can just go on and check during a Pomodoro break or whatever it might be, WhatsApp web and messenger dot com. Don't get distracted by notifications, still get all the functionality and a better view as opposed to just that. It's even bigger than when you view it on full Facebook. It's even better than that.

• 30:55Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 30:55Chris Williamson?

  So messenger.com.

• 30:56Jonny?

You can find it from inside Facebook, I think, if you just press messages. It takes you to messenger.com, I think.

• 31:02Chris Williamson?

I don't think it does. I think it still keeps the bars. Yeah, I think it's the frame of.

• 31:07Jonny?

Do you use WhatsApp web in Chrome or do you have the Mac app?

• 31:12Chris Williamson?

No, so I use it in Chrome.

• 31:13Jonny?

  Right.

• 31:14Speaker 01

Do you prefer to do that?

• 31:15Chris Williamson?

  Yes.

• 31:15Jonny?

Because the app's a bit hit and miss for me sometimes.

• 31:17Chris Williamson?

That's exactly why I don't use it. So it's firstly, the app's buggy.

• 31:21Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 31:21Chris Williamson?

And secondly, turning off notifications for it is more difficult. Like, it's just, it's more entrenched in my system.

• 31:29Jonny?

  Cold turkey kills it.

• 31:31Speaker 01

  Just goes nowhere.

• 31:32Jonny?

Yeah. So, so do you need, because mine will say like, you need your phone, like, scan the QR code. Does WhatsApp web do that as well?

• 31:39Chris Williamson?

  Only once, only once ever.

• 31:41Jonny?

  But, right.

• 31:41Speaker 01

There is a native version of messenger.com called Franz, F R A N Z, or Goofy, which is like an open source.

• 31:48Chris Williamson?

  When you say native.

• 31:50Speaker 01

  Native Mac.

• 31:51Jonny?

Like, it's, it's a feed curator. Is it, is that?

• 31:55Speaker 01

Uh, no, no, so, so, so is, is it Franz that does all of the different?

• 31:59Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 32:00Speaker 01

Okay, so there, there is a messenger app. I think there's one called Goofy and one called something else. Franz is something different, which just aggregates all of your instant messaging stuff.

• 32:09Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 32:10Speaker 01

I mean, Facebook are going to do that themselves anyway, soon. They're going to integrate WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram Messenger.

• 32:15Chris Williamson?

That would be fantastic. Nothing would make me happier.

• 32:18Speaker 01

With them having to switch between.

• 32:19Jonny?

It'll still be on separate. I bet you it's still on separate apps, yeah.

• 32:23Speaker 01

But just on one mega app.

• 32:24Jonny?

  Well, I don't think they'll, I don't think they'll mash them.

• 32:28Speaker 01

I, I bet it's, I bet for the developers, they're having a, a handful of access because of the

• 32:34Speaker 01

  just the enormity of, yeah.

• 32:36Chris Williamson?

It'll be, it'll be a bit of difficulty in combining it, but then the total screen time will go down. Total screen time will definitely go down because app switching itself just.

• 32:45Jonny?

Cause they need, they need inventory, they need space for people to use.

• 32:48Chris Williamson?

So I mean, the, the main reason that messenger.com and the flume are using flume for Instagram and removing all of the tabs except for, except for messages and like your own profile and post maybe. Um, and the reason WhatsApp web works is you want to be on receive as little as possible. You want to be on send and only send because you only want to send when you want to send, but you're on receive at the behest of everyone else.

• 33:12Speaker 01

Remember back in the day when we, we were like, oh, life hack, turn off all notifications. I cannot imagine life with notifications.

• 33:18Jonny?

There are some life hacks that just are so requisite, aren't they? That like.

• 33:22Chris Williamson?

Well, they feel primitive to us now. When I look back at one on one and one on two, I'm like, slow cooker.

• 33:28Jonny?

Well, just sit next to someone, have your notifications on the phone.

• 33:31Chris Williamson?

  Savage.

• 33:32Jonny?

You just think you are such a basic person. Just your, your life, you're just being dragged around by it.

• 33:37Speaker 01

Dragged. It's terrible. And group chats.

• 33:40Chris Williamson?

I want your attention. Excuse me, excuse me.

• 33:42Jonny?

And then you watch them pick up their phone. You're like.

• 33:45Chris Williamson?

  Mate, what are you doing?

• 33:45Jonny?

Were you, were you going to do that before that happened or not?

• 33:47Chris Williamson?

No, no, but someone's messaged now. No, someone hasn't messaged you. Someone's messaged a bunch of other people in a fucking group chat.

• 33:54Jonny?

It was something, cause I remember you and I having this conversation.

• 33:56Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 33:57Jonny?

And I said, I don't want to turn it off because I need to check it at some point. And you said, well, you, you have to have a cadence for checking. But that's either something you decide or someone else decides.

• 34:06Speaker 01

  That's so horrible.

• 34:07Jonny?

  I was just saying.

• 34:08Chris Williamson?

  Right, Blobson. Hit us.

• 34:15Speaker 01

I'm trying to rotate because I have YouTube related ones now.

• 34:19Chris Williamson?

  And a Facebook one.

• 34:20Speaker 01

  And a Facebook.

• 34:22Jonny?

Sam Harris, meditation app. Have we talked about that?

• 34:26Chris Williamson?

  Yeah, sure.

• 34:26Jonny?

  Have we talked about it?

• 34:28Chris Williamson?

Um, briefly, but not in as full depth as you, someone who's completed a fair bit of the course.

• 34:34Jonny?

Okay, so I typically, so I've just hit like a hundred and ten days, I think, of meditating in a row. Um, and.

• 34:47Speaker 01

  Good streak.

• 34:47Jonny?

I've been, thanks. I'll pause a moment there to see if I've got any congratulations. Sorry, I was busy noting down here. So I've been doing a lot of that unguided, but I think for a guided experience, the Sam Harris thing is the best that I've found, and there's a few reasons. One is it's progressive throughout the fifty days or whatever. So he introduces new concepts.

• 35:09Speaker 01

  Progressively less.

• 35:10Jonny?

Progressively less in terms of the amount he speaks, but progressive also in terms of like, so he'll start off with focus on the breath and then deliberately takes that attention and expands it to awareness. And then he starts talking about notice, who is noticing or what is noticing, turning the attention on the like the self, talks about like implanting or like trying to alter the frame of mind that you're in and all these sorts of things.

• 35:35Speaker 01

  Hands and the arms.

• 35:37Jonny?

Rest down to the legs. So it's not like Headspace, and it's only ten minutes. So I will typically do that to begin a session and then do unguided after that.

• 35:47Speaker 01

Uh, to get you into the.

• 35:49Jonny?

Hmm, into the zoon. It is paid.

• 35:51Speaker 01

That's a clever way to do it, to hybridize it without being reliant on, because the first ten minutes is always rocky.

• 35:59Jonny?

Hmm. Well, I think the risk is, the risk with medit-, the risk with anything is practicing

• 36:07Jonny?

or doing a shit practice, because then you're just entrenching in the wrong direction. Yeah. So if you sit and do thirty minutes of meditation.

• 36:15Speaker 01

  Never do technique work, tired.

• 36:18Jonny?

Well, so I suppose, like if meditation is the formal practice for an awareness or a mindfulness, and you do it when you sit down and think and just get lost in thought, lost in thought, and then the ding.

• 36:32Speaker 01

  You're just practicing that.

• 36:33Jonny?

You're like, well, what have I done there?

• 36:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:36Jonny?

So I think starting off with ten minutes of like, this is the correct, or this is a sort of a way to focus your, your mind, then allowing it to go off, I think for me at least has been more productive. So that app. Is fantastic, in my opinion. And he is, I think, someone said, who do you want to listen to for meditation advice? He'd be, he'd be up there.

• 36:58Speaker 01

  Yeah, he's what he's, I think he's a definitely a reputable meditation authority, isn't he?

• 37:03Jonny?

And he's no, he's not, there's no, he's not sensational about it. He's just like, well, I've looked at the research and.

• 37:08Chris Williamson?

Hmm. So I've been searching, sorry for being a bit quiet during that. I've been searching through my phone. And I found the code, modern wisdom, all in capital letters, will give anyone who's listening, one month free trial of full access to waking up.

• 37:22Jonny?

  Zinger.

• 37:23Chris Williamson?

So I spoke to, I spoke to Carl from Support at the beginning of this year. And he said that we can send you a promo trial that will offer your listeners a free one month trial. Um, modern wisdom.

• 37:37Jonny?

That's awesome. There's also, so there's meditations, there's fifty days of meditation and then.

• 37:42Chris Williamson?

  Lessons.

• 37:43Jonny?

Lessons as well, which are just sort of monologues on various aspects of life. And it becomes a daily session that is different every day.

• 37:50Speaker 01

  Brilliant.

• 37:54Jonny?

  So I.

• 37:55Speaker 01

So it's like I said. I meant that in earnest.

• 37:58Chris Williamson?

I like, I like the idea of, of the waking up thing. Um, I, I'm beginning to be moved round to your way of thinking, Seth, to do with guided versus unguided.

• 38:09Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 38:09Chris Williamson?

Um, I think my initial problem with unguided sessions was it was embedding bad habits, like what am I doing? This sucks, this is this, that and the other. Uh, but since I got a meditation coach and have been following a more structured programme. Um, cause I don't know how much what you like about guided meditation is the fact it's guided, the fact it's structured.

• 38:31Jonny?

So what I like about Sam's stuff is the, the in someone, so I, I, I think the parts of meditation that I start to find difficult are the searching for the self parts.

• 38:42Chris Williamson?

  Hmm.

• 38:43Jonny?

So moving from breath into awareness and then from awareness into where is the, like the seat of attention?

• 38:49Chris Williamson?

  Hmm.

• 38:49Jonny?

I find that quite difficult to get my head around. Whereas the way Sam does it is he starts off like Billy basics. And then gently introduces those concepts.

• 38:57Speaker 01

You started the seat of your pants and then you fly by the seat of your pants.

• 39:02Jonny?

  To the seat of attention.

• 39:03Speaker 01

  I see.

• 39:04Jonny?

Scobly. So it's, it's because it's progressive. That's what I like about it. Whereas Headspace is just hands in your arms.

• 39:11Speaker 01

  So mine is.

• 39:15Speaker 01

Ham Sarris. If you are looking on YouTube at my head.

• 39:20Chris Williamson?

Is this, is this like Toby?

• 39:22Speaker 01

No, it's similar to Toby. So if you're looking at my, my head, you might be thinking, oh, what a wonderful haircut. I wish I could get a haircut like that. Well, let me tell you, I had this haircut in my own kitchen. And that was thanks to Chris recommending a fantastic hair cutter called Zara. Who comes to your house and cuts your hair, saves you having to wait in the barber shop. Are you looking at me because we've done this before?

• 39:48Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 39:49Speaker 01

  Okay, next one.

• 39:51Chris Williamson?

Get your haircut at home was a life hack you adopted from me talking about it on a past.

• 39:56Speaker 01

  On a life hack, fine.

• 39:59Chris Williamson?

  I don't think.

• 40:00Speaker 01

I've got a very good haircut.

• 40:04Chris Williamson?

I get my haircut once every six weeks.

• 40:07Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 40:07Chris Williamson?

And the Chris is going across. And the experience of going, did I say this last time?

• 40:12Speaker 01

  No.

• 40:13Chris Williamson?

I just know what you're going to say and you're wrong.

• 40:15Speaker 01

  Well, you don't know.

• 40:16Chris Williamson?

Okay, so I like going to the hairdressers because it's, I get to. It's the same feeling for me as like being on a plane. It's time out and I get my head massage on a massage chair. I get sparkling water.

• 40:33Speaker 01

  Oh, and drinks.

• 40:34Chris Williamson?

You know what I like doing, Yusuf? I actually like paying more and being more inconvenienced as well. So, yes.

• 40:40Speaker 01

  Is it inconvenienced?

• 40:42Chris Williamson?

That's the question. So were you, did you have to drive to the hairdressers? Yeah, how long was the journey?

• 40:47Speaker 01

  Time and money.

• 40:49Chris Williamson?

Ten minutes. Both ways, twenty minutes. How long did it take to get in and do the small talk?

• 40:57Speaker 01

  Ten minutes.

• 40:58Chris Williamson?

  Thirty minutes, thirty minutes.

• 41:00Speaker 01

Do you want me to just give you the total time? I'll give you the total time.

• 41:02Chris Williamson?

I don't care. I'm talking about total wasted time because like we can't speed up the haircut that much.

• 41:06Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 41:07Chris Williamson?

But you've had to get up, leave, account for traffic, deal with traffic, get there. Small talk with a bunch of women that you have nothing in common with, drink.

• 41:19Chris Williamson?

You're wrong. Hey, how much do you pay?

• 41:22Jonny?

  Thirty quid.

• 41:23Chris Williamson?

  Fuck me.

• 41:24Speaker 01

  You can get two haircuts.

• 41:25Chris Williamson?

So two haircuts in half the time?

• 41:27Jonny?

So so these arguments are only valid.

• 41:30Speaker 01

  Four times the value.

• 41:30Jonny?

They're only valid if, one, you are managing your finances to the extent that you know exactly where every thirty quid is going, and two.

• 41:38Speaker 01

Not really. It just means that you have a preference for spending less money compared to spending more.

• 41:42Jonny?

You can't say that, don't spend money on that.

• 41:44Chris Williamson?

  That's Gamble's fallacy.

• 41:45Jonny?

  If you. No, it isn't.

• 41:47Chris Williamson?

Is if it's like if you if you need to know down to a degree of fidelity that is thirty quid.

• 41:52Jonny?

But it's it's a thirty quid spent every six weeks.

• 41:55Chris Williamson?

  Okay.

• 41:55Jonny?

So how many people have that tight of a hold on the finances that they say, oh, well, my thirty quid that you're spending on a haircut?

• 42:00Speaker 01

But it's not as if you're getting anything for the extra thirty quid.

• 42:02Jonny?

But I am getting an experience.

• 42:04Speaker 01

So, okay, well, if you enjoy the experience.

• 42:05Chris Williamson?

The same experience again and again and again.

• 42:09Speaker 01

Well, so what what I love about Zara is that she tolerates my weirdness and I just sit and work while she's cutting my hair.

• 42:18Jonny?

So the other the other aspect to that, what I was saying was,

• 42:22Jonny?

if if your time is that well managed that ninety ninety minutes, I say, every six weeks cannot be possibly wasted.

• 42:29Chris Williamson?

  No.

• 42:30Jonny?

  Then again, so I I just don't.

• 42:31Speaker 01

You're making an argument for wasting time and money.

• 42:34Jonny?

  No, I'm not.

• 42:35Speaker 01

But because it's a small amount of time and money.

• 42:37Jonny?

It's an allocation of those things.

• 42:40Jonny?

So I get an enjoyable experience. You enjoy the experience.

• 42:43Chris Williamson?

Do you enjoy the driving? Do you enjoy the driving there and back?

• 42:45Jonny?

It's fine. But I enjoy I enjoy being.

• 42:47Chris Williamson?

When we're talking about marginal gains and refining things down.

• 42:52Speaker 01

Isn't there also a sense of smugness that you get just from having your haircut without having to go anywhere?

• 42:57Chris Williamson?

  Didn't leave.

• 42:57Speaker 01

  And that's also.

• 42:58Chris Williamson?

Didn't have to get changed, didn't have to put my shoes on, didn't have to take them off again.

• 43:02Jonny?

How about we do six weeks where we flip around?

• 43:06Speaker 01

  We switch haircut.

• 43:06Chris Williamson?

  What, one haircut?

• 43:07Speaker 01

I sometimes get my haircut in a place as well.

• 43:10Jonny?

Do you get a head massage?

• 43:11Speaker 01

  No.

• 43:11Jonny?

Do you get a sparkling water?

• 43:12Speaker 01

But I I remember there was a place that did give you a head massage in Edinburgh and I used to work with a Scottish guy and I came back and I was like, oh, haircut in that place. And he's like, oh, I know that place. Instant, samey, that's all I'm seeing.

• 43:25Speaker 01

Yeah, I am. Just go because there's a ten pounds haircut. Um.

• 43:32Jonny?

  I I I like it because I think it's a it's a bit of being nice to yourself, like it's a, I'm gonna go and.

• 43:39Chris Williamson?

Again, so for me, here's my here's my argument for that. You're spending fifteen quid extra every six weeks.

• 43:45Speaker 01

Save that up, go for a, go for a.

• 43:46Chris Williamson?

  Go for a massage.

• 43:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 43:47Chris Williamson?

You are, you are making protein pancakes here. Well, that is one of the best references that I've made.

• 43:55Jonny?

  That's you're assuming that I want a, I like a massage as much as I do a haircut.

• 44:00Speaker 01

But you, okay, you, you're saying, I like a haircut because it's turned to myself and it's a, and it's a pampering. But ultimately, like, you can't feel your hair being cut.

• 44:10Chris Williamson?

  I agree.

• 44:11Speaker 01

And like, you're just, you start in a silly little coat.

• 44:13Chris Williamson?

And you're paying, the, the, the killer for me is the overhead that you're paying that you can't get around. The overhead in terms of fifteen minutes or ten minutes there, ten minutes bullshit at the beginning.

• 44:24Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 44:24Chris Williamson?

Ten minutes at the end, like, that's half an hour.

• 44:27Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 44:27Chris Williamson?

So every twelve weeks, you have wasted the exact amount of time and the exact amount of money that I can get you an at-home massage for.

• 44:35Speaker 01

This is such a good advert for Zara, I think, like.

• 44:37Chris Williamson?

  And Sabina.

• 44:38Speaker 01

  And.

• 44:39Chris Williamson?

Sabina's come round, do the massage, or you?

• 44:41Speaker 01

Well, you, you, you could get Zara to do the massage, Sabina to do the haircut, see if they both make an absolute terrible job of it.

• 44:47Chris Williamson?

  Yes, they will.

• 44:48Speaker 01

  And.

• 44:49Chris Williamson?

Although Sabina wants to be a, a surgeon and.

• 44:53Speaker 01

  Ah, true.

• 44:53Chris Williamson?

So maybe she's got steady hands.

• 44:55Jonny?

This is the same issue that I had with Alfred.

• 44:57Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 44:58Jonny?

Which is, so if, let's say, over twelve weeks, we all get the same amount done.

• 45:02Chris Williamson?

  Mm hmm.

• 45:03Jonny?

  But you two, for example.

• 45:04Speaker 01

The, the solution Chris suggested of saving the, the, the extra and putting it into an actual pampering, surely that.

• 45:09Jonny?

But that's assuming that that's, so, so both of what you are saying is you are wasting time that should be saved, time and money that should be saved and put to something.

• 45:16Chris Williamson?

  Could be saved.

• 45:17Jonny?

  Precisely.

• 45:18Chris Williamson?

  But my point is.

• 45:19Jonny?

But I, I don't think anybody does that.

• 45:20Speaker 01

So you think because we're so wasteful with our time and money anyway.

• 45:24Jonny?

  I'm saying that I don't.

• 45:25Chris Williamson?

  Some cost fallacy.

• 45:26Jonny?

I'm saying that I don't think anybody has a tight enough control over their time or money to say, I'm not going to win this argument. Cause you, you two are entrenched. Try, go and try.

• 45:36Speaker 01

So yesterday I was so, I like so precious about time, cause I have a lot to do. Uh, and ninety minutes out of my day would have been killer, like it would have.

• 45:44Jonny?

So in a situation where you're revising for finals for medicine.

• 45:47Speaker 01

  Hmm, okay.

• 45:48Jonny?

That, fair enough, but in general. I don't think there's anyone has enough.

• 45:53Chris Williamson?

So in general, in general, marginal gains don't matter, but that's the exact reason why marginal gains matter.

• 46:00Speaker 01

I haven't even got to my life hack because I've this is.

• 46:02Jonny?

  Get your haircut at home.

• 46:04Speaker 01

  Because this is a duplicate.

• 46:05Chris Williamson?

  So here's.

• 46:05Jonny?

  Exactly where your money's going.

• 46:06Chris Williamson?

Okay, so here we go. Here's here's another one for that one there. Darren, my business partner, has adopted the Pomodora technique. And was singing the praises to in a group chat with our other two directors, saying it changed his life. Then he said, and being dramatic. But it's shaved thirty minutes off my Monday tasks over a forty year career. That's forty three full twenty four hour days. Or a hundred and thirty working days that I've saved.

• 46:32Speaker 01

  That's.

• 46:32Chris Williamson?

If he's not, if he's not using his time down with fidelity of thirty minutes and he's being wasteful in the week, why should he be bothered about that?

• 46:40Speaker 01

So Johnny did a podcast recently called The Death by a Thousand Cuts, which is.

• 46:45Chris Williamson?

  He's now being killed by.

• 46:48Jonny?

I honestly think we're arguing about different things.

• 46:51Speaker 01

Okay, I I think so because I because I know you you are a very logical person and this seems really at odds with. So I think I think we're probably not understanding your your point.

• 47:02Chris Williamson?

What we're gonna do, what we're gonna do is we're gonna go away and we're gonna discuss it. And then in life hacks one oh nine.

• 47:08Speaker 01

We'll all be converts to the.

• 47:10Chris Williamson?

We'll be at the same, we'll be in the same scenario.

• 47:11Speaker 01

We'll all be getting a haircut.

• 47:12Jonny?

Where you two tell me that I should get my haircut at home.

• 47:15Chris Williamson?

  Because you're wrong.

• 47:16Speaker 01

Well, no, because we we'll be getting a haircut in an expensive time.

• 47:19Chris Williamson?

I'll be paying, I'll be paying twice, I'll be paying twice as much to wait for twice as long.

• 47:23Jonny?

Do you think that everything in your life is done purely for the purposes of optimizing time and money?

• 47:28Chris Williamson?

No, some of it's for enjoyment as well, because I don't, I'm never going to enjoy a journey to this.

• 47:34Jonny?

Let's use CrossFit as an example.

• 47:35Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 47:36Jonny?

Is that the best use of time and money for achieving an outcome?

• 47:40Speaker 01

And that that was, there was the three.

• 47:41Jonny?

And enjoyment, okay, okay, and enjoyment.

• 47:44Chris Williamson?

  Roughly hewn it's.

• 47:46Jonny?

Actually, I added enjoyment, but Chris said that enjoyment, because the goal is absent strength or whatever.

• 47:52Speaker 01

  Right.

• 47:53Jonny?

So is that the best use of those things?

• 47:55Chris Williamson?

  The best I've found.

• 47:57Jonny?

Compared to other things that I've tried.

• 48:00Chris Williamson?

  So it's like.

• 48:00Jonny?

It takes less time and less money than other versions.

• 48:03Chris Williamson?

Yeah, fitness. So I think you and I both know.

• 48:06Speaker 01

What about not training though, because that's costs no time and no money.

• 48:10Chris Williamson?

Well, that won't achieve the outcome. Yeah.

• 48:11Speaker 01

Okay. So to pause that discussion, um. Thanks to Chris being a kind of reference for me as well. Because obviously this is someone who is coming to your house, doesn't know you, you could be a predator. Um, and so she called Chris because that was through the reference, you know, hi. I've got a new inquiry from someone called Youssef, is he a weirdo? Chris's like. Um, yes, but not, not that kind of weirdo.

• 48:42Chris Williamson?

I don't want to, uh, I don't want to spoil this story, Youssef, but this literally was told on the last life hacks.

• 48:47Speaker 01

  Oh, no.

• 48:48Chris Williamson?

The reason that you feel like it's such a funny story.

• 48:51Speaker 01

  It feels very deja vu.

• 48:52Chris Williamson?

Is because it was on the trailer for the last life.

• 48:54Speaker 01

  Was it? Right. Okay.

• 48:55Chris Williamson?

Let's move on to your life hack.

• 48:57Speaker 01

Okay, my, my life hack, thi- this might be a repeat as well. Keep dental floss in the shower.

• 49:02Chris Williamson?

  Yes, yes, repeat.

• 49:03Speaker 01

  Right, hang on.

• 49:04Chris Williamson?

I think that's, I think that's how a hundred percent of them have been repeats.

• 49:07Speaker 01

You know why this is it?

• 49:08Chris Williamson?

You haven't formatted your life hack. You need a life hack for your life hacks.

• 49:11Speaker 01

Okay, when you're finished in the shower. This is another repeat, isn't it?

• 49:15Chris Williamson?

  I don't know. Finish it.

• 49:16Speaker 01

Um, just give yourself a he- a top to toe flick.

• 49:21Chris Williamson?

  Oh, okay, scraping.

• 49:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:23Chris Williamson?

I do a scraping. Do you do scraping?

• 49:25Speaker 01

  No.

• 49:25Chris Williamson?

You've got a lot of you.

• 49:27Speaker 01

So Johnny's gonna hate this, but I think it minimizes your towel, toweling off time.

• 49:31Chris Williamson?

I, I do this. I've just instantiated this like since I was a kid.

• 49:35Speaker 01

There we go. So, uh, yeah, it, it, it's just like a natural, it's like, I read somewhere, um, someone was like, oh, a life hack. Spread your bum cheeks when you sit to have a poo. You're like, well, who sits with their bum cheeks pressed together? So, yeah, these are like natural.

• 49:49Chris Williamson?

So you're flicking, you're flicking so that you spend less time with the towel?

• 49:52Speaker 01

And so that your towel doesn't get as wet.

• 49:55Chris Williamson?

  Okay.

• 49:56Speaker 01

Cause I don't think a towel really dries. I think a towel just.

• 49:59Chris Williamson?

  Stays.

• 49:59Speaker 01

  Takes.

• 50:00Chris Williamson?

Wet. Yeah, I agree. I agree.

• 50:03Speaker 01

Oh, right. I'm gonna have to sort out the ones we've.

• 50:05Chris Williamson?

You really are. Right. So I'm going to use one which is for any potential landlords or landladies out there, or anyone else who wants to work out whether someone is taking care of a room or a property.

• 50:22Speaker 01

  Cameras.

• 50:24Chris Williamson?

Cameras is, it's a bit of a blunt solution to this.

• 50:28Speaker 01

Probably illegal as well, I mean.

• 50:29Chris Williamson?

I think it is. So I've recently purchased a new property which has some tenants in it. As a gift to the tenants, I've bought them a plant. And.

• 50:40Speaker 01

  Cameron.

• 50:41Chris Williamson?

  With a Cameron.

• 50:44Chris Williamson?

I've bought them a plant and in the, the point of the plant is if I go into the house and the plant's been tended to, it's been watered, probably pretty good indicator that nothing else in the house needs looking at. And I've taken this idea from.

• 51:00Speaker 01

Not now though, if they watch the podcast.

• 51:02Chris Williamson?

They don't watch it. Oh, actually shit, no, they do. And they all know who you are. It's fine. I'll block their, I'll, I'll block their IP.

• 51:09Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 51:09Chris Williamson?

So they're all, they're all medical students anyway. So I'm sure they'll be sweet. But the idea was taken from, it's either Foo Fighters or Aerosmith and their sound manager put into their hospitality rider. So before a big artist plays a show, they'll have a big tech rider and it'll be, this is the kind of amp system we need. This is how many guitar racks we need. This is the height of the step at the front for the lead singer to step on and the lighting system and all this sort of stuff. And there'll be what's referred to as a hospitality rider, which is food, drink, we need these many kiwis and some juice and blah, blah, blah. This all gets sent over to the promoter or

• 51:50Chris Williamson?

the event organizer. And in, deep in the depths of the hospitality rider, one of the sound tech heads had put in that they wanted a bowl of M and M's with no blue ones in.

• 52:05Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 52:06Chris Williamson?

And that was being used as a canary in the coal mine for if they've got no blue M and M's in the bowl, they've definitely got the fucking lights and the sound and everything else. So he would judge with less scrutiny, other things that are, are part of the rider, wherever, whereas if.

• 52:25Chris Williamson?

They have got the blue ones in, I think.

• 52:27Jonny?

The question is, in your situation, so if the canary dies, you don't go in the coal mine. But if your plant dies, what do you do?

• 52:37Chris Williamson?

You look around the remainder of the house with more scrutiny.

• 52:39Jonny?

  Right.

• 52:39Chris Williamson?

Are they remembering to turn the extractor fan on when they go into the bathroom? Are they making sure that they're not leaving um water in the bath? So like just other things, normal day to day, housey things.

• 52:52Jonny?

So ideally you'd get tenants that like hate nature and hate plants. Because then you know that if they're managing the plant, that everything else is be.

• 53:01Chris Williamson?

  Oh, yeah.

• 53:01Jonny?

The risk is that you have tenants who love plants.

• 53:05Chris Williamson?

  Mm hmm.

• 53:05Jonny?

But couldn't give a shit about damp in the bathroom.

• 53:06Chris Williamson?

Good point. Good point, but yes.

• 53:09Jonny?

  Hamster.

• 53:10Chris Williamson?

  Dead hamster.

• 53:11Jonny?

Just a hamster or like a pet, a fish, fish tank.

• 53:15Chris Williamson?

  I.

• 53:15Jonny?

  Get to feed the fish.

• 53:16Chris Williamson?

The plant as a non sentient being to me feels like a safer bet.

• 53:20Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 53:22Chris Williamson?

  Johnny.

• 53:23Jonny?

  God, it's me again.

• 53:25Chris Williamson?

If he says get my haircut at house.

• 53:28Jonny?

He's been convinced. Um. So I was gonna say go what?

• 53:34Chris Williamson?

  Okay.

• 53:35Jonny?

But I haven't used it enough.

• 53:36Chris Williamson?

Let's, let's hold, let's hold off on that one, because I want to hear a proper experience and you haven't, I don't think you've used it for long enough.

• 53:41Jonny?

Okay. Um. This is a bit weak, but I'm gonna go for it.

• 53:49Jonny?

Go to a hairdressers, no, um, the new range of Fitbits.

• 53:54Chris Williamson?

  Oh, excellent.

• 53:55Jonny?

  What have you got?

• 53:55Chris Williamson?

  You're showcasing it now.

• 53:56Jonny?

So this is, I am, so this is a Inspire HR, I believe it's called.

• 54:02Chris Williamson?

  Okay.

• 54:02Jonny?

So the Fitbit that I used to have.

• 54:04Chris Williamson?

  Resources.

• 54:05Jonny?

Human resources, Fitbit, human resources. The Fitbit, the, the older range of Fitbits, at least as far as I'm aware, the only, the only one that was waterproof was the cheapest one. Which had no screen, it was just, it was the one I used to have.

• 54:18Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 54:18Jonny?

  If you do remember.

• 54:19Chris Williamson?

  Band.

• 54:20Jonny?

Um, band with a little bit in it.

• 54:22Chris Williamson?

  A Fitbit.

• 54:23Jonny?

It was fit. In it, um, and that was waterproof and you could swim in it and stuff like that. And all the other ones, the more advanced ones that tracked your heart rate and stuff like that, weren't waterproof. Which is a fuck on, because every time you have to have a shower, you take it off and then you forget to put it back on again, etc. Um. I was walking the dog and something happened that flipped the Fitbit over. And the bit came out and this was like, I think maybe even a day later, I just went like that. And there were no lights. I was like, that's weird, bro. Squeeze it.

• 54:54Speaker 01

How did you know that it was when you were walking the dog?

• 54:57Jonny?

Well, that's the only thing that I can track back the way that we, so I think the the lead like flipped over because you don't, you know, I don't know about you, but my life isn't like violent or. There's not many things that like, I could, I could have lost it. So I was like, all right, fuck, I'm gonna have to buy a new one. Same price as the, so it's eighty quid, which is the same price as the old cheap one.

• 55:18Speaker 01

Call them and say, hi, I just want the bit, but not, I don't want the fit.

• 55:20Jonny?

  They don't sell that anymore.

• 55:21Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 55:22Jonny?

  This is now the same.

• 55:23Speaker 01

You got the bit and the fit.

• 55:24Chris Williamson?

So you can't go screenless anymore?

• 55:26Jonny?

  Don't think so.

• 55:27Chris Williamson?

I think they do a pebble type thing, you can maybe go screenless on.

• 55:30Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 55:30Chris Williamson?

So talk me through what's it called again? What's it do?

• 55:33Jonny?

Fitbit Inspire HR. So there is an Inspire, which is slightly cheaper. But the Inspire HR does full, shines a green light on your wrist and then the green light shines back and it makes your heart rate.

• 55:43Chris Williamson?

  Yep.

• 55:43Jonny?

So I've got like better sleep data, better calorie data, better constant heart rate tracking. Similar to a woodband, but it stays on my wrist.

• 55:52Chris Williamson?

The only reason that you can't get your woodband stern is because you were wearing it too slack and had the wrong band on. It's, it, it really pains me that you, you weren't able to, um, it, it wasn't able to have enough time to like win you over. Because of something is, that was so basic and obviously like the fact that it is so fundamental is exactly the problem. Um, but the fact that you weren't able to, like it didn't have time to win you over.

• 56:17Jonny?

The part that I don't understand about them is why, so that they use the same technology as Fitbit, I think.

• 56:24Chris Williamson?

Well, they use visual, they use visual, yeah, but it's different fidelity.

• 56:27Jonny?

But so it doesn't, there's not a need for the strap, the, of whoop ass. There's no reason it couldn't be this strap, for example.

• 56:34Chris Williamson?

  Right.

• 56:36Jonny?

I don't know. Is it, or is there, it's comfort?

• 56:38Chris Williamson?

  Right.

• 56:40Jonny?

Because it, so I tried different tightnesses, your strap, that strap.

• 56:45Chris Williamson?

The one strap that you should have had is the one that you can't get in the UK or couldn't get, but you can now.

• 56:49Jonny?

It's like they're fighting against me.

• 56:50Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 56:52Jonny?

So I wanted it to work.

• 56:53Chris Williamson?

Will Ahmed, who is the CEO.

• 56:55Jonny?

Eighty pounds of me wanted it to work.

• 56:56Chris Williamson?

Didn't reply to me about my podcast invite either, so I can just.

• 57:01Jonny?

Do you know what's crazy about Whoop actually?

• 57:02Chris Williamson?

They were just on Joe Rogan.

• 57:03Jonny?

They've seen the amount of funding they've had, a lot of funding.

• 57:07Chris Williamson?

They just hit the market, right? So my contract with Whoop is up. Um, and I'm not sure about whether or not I'm going to renew.

• 57:17Jonny?

  Wow, so that's.

• 57:20Chris Williamson?

The only reason I'm not, the only reason I'm not sure about whether or not I'm going to renew.

• 57:23Speaker 01

  Will Ahmed didn't.

• 57:24Chris Williamson?

Will. Will Ahmed, yeah, bless you. Come on, what's yours?

• 57:29Jonny?

No, no, hold on. Sorry, I just wanna hear a bit more about that. Just because I thought you were fully sold.

• 57:35Chris Williamson?

I do, I do really like them, um, but I liked it a lot more when the, I was getting it off the back of referrals. So I just don't know if it's worth thirty quid a month to me.

• 57:48Jonny?

Do you do anything with the data?

• 57:50Chris Williamson?

Like if it said, if it came out and went flashing red, like Chris, fuck's sake, say in bed. So it doesn't, it doesn't inform my training, which is one thing. I think a lot of us are too pig headed to just, I've got a training plan, I'm sticking to my training plan. If it's a rest day and even though I'm green, I'm gonna rest and if it's, um.

• 58:05Speaker 01

Yeah, what determines whether I train or not is can I fit it in the week rather than like.

• 58:10Chris Williamson?

One thing which, one thing which I, I will miss will be the sleep tracking because when I have phone out of room, that means no sleep cycle, which means that I need to have a wearable of some kind to track my sleep.

• 58:22Jonny?

I think the sleep tracking on them, for me, when it stayed at my wrist all night was better than anything else I've tried.

• 58:28Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 58:30Jonny?

  And obviously the H R B.

• 58:31Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 58:31Jonny?

Like pretty hard to get H R B data.

• 58:33Chris Williamson?

  Impossible.

• 58:34Jonny?

I suppose the question is like, as you say, if it says rest and you don't.

• 58:38Chris Williamson?

  Hmm.

• 58:39Jonny?

Then well, e- even like, is it accurate enough to predict like all of the stuff going on with you physically? To say this is I'm my data is more important than your training plan and what you feel and all those things and you should rest today.

• 58:53Chris Williamson?

  It's just.

• 58:53Jonny?

Put a lot of faith in it.

• 58:54Chris Williamson?

It's just to inform, isn't it?

• 58:55Jonny?

Are you gonna get anything inside?

• 58:57Chris Williamson?

Again, I'm considering that, but I don't want anything. I don't like the idea of anything that's a smart watch. Like I don't want something that displays text. So an I watch is out of the question.

• 59:06Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 59:07Chris Williamson?

  I refuse to like.

• 59:08Jonny?

But it's the battery life on them as well.

• 59:10Chris Williamson?

  Daily charger.

• 59:11Jonny?

A watch that you have to charge daily.

• 59:12Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 59:13Jonny?

  Is seeming ridiculous.

• 59:14Chris Williamson?

So one of the um, one of the guys that I was away on the stag to with recently was wearing a Garmin. Very good Garmin. Um, and he uses his for everything for swimming and he said, I was like, I don't want anything that displays stuff. And he's like, oh, you can just turn off the link up for like uh, phone calls and text messages and stuff, which is quite good. Um, and I could use that because I'm swimming twice a week. I could use that and it will, it works out your stroke rate, your cadence, your length, time, your speed. Everything for swimming, which is pretty attractive. And then it links up with a heart belt, which will track your heart rate. Um, and.

• 59:52Jonny?

That's gonna be more, way more accurate.

• 59:54Chris Williamson?

Pisses all over this. Yeah, I've got My Zone M Z three, which does the job as well.

• 59:57Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 59:58Chris Williamson?

But that's again, that's another piece of tech. And there's something, this quantified self movement is kind of cool. But it just screams virgin to me as well. Like, there's.

• 1:00:11Jonny?

Did you see the poster put up the other day about like the twenty two year, was it the twenty two year old gin goer virgin?

• 1:00:17Chris Williamson?

  No.

• 1:00:18Jonny?

Have a look at it. It's, it's very. Nice.

• 1:00:21Speaker 01

Very much on that, it's like coming in and doing a hundred and twenty six point five kilo deadlift.

• 1:00:25Jonny?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:00:26Speaker 01

  Today, yeah.

• 1:00:28Jonny?

Again, that's another like powerlifting like thing for me, like I'm not gonna overtrain. I'm gonna have like these huge rests. I'm not going to like, you know, even you as someone who I considered to be as open minded as you can get for a powerlifter.

• 1:00:46Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 1:00:47Jonny?

For the, since the beginning of the year refused to do cardio with me because you were worried it was gonna defeat your gains. And you're the most secular of the, of the powerlifters.

• 1:00:57Speaker 01

Of the powerlifting brigade, yeah, like he hasn't got a beard, hasn't shaved his head.

• 1:01:01Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:02Speaker 01

  Doesn't wear like.

• 1:01:02Jonny?

Well, it's, it's like, it's like how the music taste that I know you and I have, I think, I know you do to this. You dabble.

• 1:01:09Speaker 01

  Yeah, I, I try, but I just.

• 1:01:11Jonny?

It, it, yeah, but like neither of us are dressed in black or, and I, I, I feel the same way about, I think any community really. Powerlifting's really bad where people literally have all the gear and no idea. Like they've been training for six months, but they've got the best shoes and the best. You just need to go away for five years and train really hard.

• 1:01:30Speaker 01

  In a coffin and like.

• 1:01:32Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:32Speaker 01

  A T shirt.

• 1:01:33Jonny?

Without a belt and peck deck, three years of peck deck and then, then you're allowed.

• 1:01:38Speaker 01

But so this is Johnny's like theory that everyone should have a mandatory three years of peck deck and.

• 1:01:44Jonny?

  Like leg press.

• 1:01:44Speaker 01

  And leg press.

• 1:01:46Jonny?

Cause even like before you started doing CrossFit, so I, I bet those people you see in CrossFit who you think like, you just need to do peck deck and leg press for a year, then come back and you'll get a lot more out of CrossFit when you come back and you do a bit of peck deck. It's just like your rite of passage. Donebell rows, lateral raises.

• 1:02:04Speaker 01

  Yep, you're totally right.

• 1:02:05Jonny?

  Get excited off face pulls.

• 1:02:07Speaker 01

Get your barbell row up to one sixty and then.

• 1:02:08Jonny?

  Oh, God.

• 1:02:09Speaker 01

  Your V M O, your V M O's very silky today.

• 1:02:11Jonny?

  Yeah, you are very soft.

• 1:02:13Speaker 01

My V M O's normally pretty good these days. I think stopping squatting has been.

• 1:02:17Jonny?

  Stubby squish.

• 1:02:18Speaker 01

So. Let me know again if this is a repeat. I need to sort my formatting out. Um. This is a dental one. And this comes from a friend of mine called Harpinder, who is a dentist. And he said, if you're going to eat sweet foods, eat them all in one go. So do not, for God's sake, have like slow, like don't graze on sweets. If you're gonna eat sweets, go big or go home and do it in one block. Because he said the the window of time that sugar causes an insult to the teeth is over twenty minutes. And so if you eat more sugar within that twenty minute period, there's no extra damage. But you will cause more damage by like, if you had like a skittle every twenty minutes, then you've completely.

• 1:03:03Chris Williamson?

So I I get it from a dental perspective, but from a satiating perspec- perspective, it's completely contrary.

• 1:03:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:03:10Chris Williamson?

Unlike a realism, like living your life.

• 1:03:13Speaker 01

It is. Um. But on on that note, uh and this is not good for you, but um. A chocolate bar that I've rediscovered recently, that is really the unsung hero of all chocolate bars. The picnic bar. Absolutely beautiful. Like, however, um.

• 1:03:31Chris Williamson?

What's what's it contain? Come on.

• 1:03:32Speaker 01

  So it's it's I think it's it's nougat, raisins and peanuts.

• 1:03:36Chris Williamson?

  This would kill you.

• 1:03:37Speaker 01

Yeah, some kind of nut. Um. In a kind of rocky texture. Unfortunately, reviews on Asda are very low because they've made them smaller and not and kept price the same, which is a bit naughty, but I guess if you're interested in lower calories, then it's kind of good, but you could just eat less of a bigger bar. Um. So, yeah.

• 1:03:56Chris Williamson?

Who eats part of one bar?

• 1:03:59Speaker 01

Well, that that's the problem, isn't it? Like the portion control or so much of the obesity problem is bigger portions and then people feeling because we're so puritan, we're obliged to finish our plate and.

• 1:04:10Chris Williamson?

That's the thing in America, man. Like when I was in America, you Cheesecake Factory, the fucking size.

• 1:04:16Speaker 01

  Oh, it's insulting, isn't it?

• 1:04:17Chris Williamson?

The starters were too big to finish.

• 1:04:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:20Chris Williamson?

The start. Starts were too big to finish. They had a um. They had a salad.

• 1:04:28Chris Williamson?

A salad that was two thousand one hundred calories.

• 1:04:32Speaker 01

As a, as a single serving.

• 1:04:34Chris Williamson?

Single serving, one person, main, salad.

• 1:04:38Speaker 01

I mean, even if it's not a main, like that is exceeding daily calories for most people.

• 1:04:43Chris Williamson?

Two thousand one hundred calories, unreal, but in the, on the flip side of that.

• 1:04:48Speaker 01

  But it was delicious.

• 1:04:49Chris Williamson?

And well, yeah, probably was, I didn't order it. Um, on the flip side of that, they have every single food, every single meal has the calories listed next to it, including drinks, and they have a menu bigger than some restaurants in the UK's menus of light bites that are like under six hundred calories, and there's shitloads of stuff in there that was really nice.

• 1:05:09Speaker 01

Six hundred calories is still a pretty big meal.

• 1:05:12Chris Williamson?

  It's a main meal.

• 1:05:13Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, that's for a light bite. Would, would you rather have?

• 1:05:16Chris Williamson?

No, no, no, it's, so it was, they called it light bites, but it was just a main that happens to be. So then it was a full meal, like it was a, a, a salmon on like rice with this and this and this or whatever.

• 1:05:27Speaker 01

So I'd rather have that. I'd rather have all the calories laid out, even if every meal is two thousand plus calories, then you can just eat half of it. But like, I suppose that predicates that you are able to take a portion and not eat all of it.

• 1:05:41Chris Williamson?

I mean, yeah, I do, I think that's quite difficult, but yeah, the problem that I see with Americans or America's food crisis in general is that people are making the wrong choices. They have, they are better informed in America by a, a real margin than we are over here for what they're, what is going in their mouths. And they're changing stuff now, so they can't have in Happy Meals for kids, they have to give them fruit and a juice. They can't give them fries and a soft drink unless, unless specifically requested.

• 1:06:15Speaker 01

Did you get a soft drink in any of these like fast food places?

• 1:06:19Chris Williamson?

So I was, I, when I go to America, I make a point of trying all of the different, um, uh, sweet zero calorie teas.

• 1:06:26Speaker 01

Uh, okay, they're, they're very good. Arizona ones.

• 1:06:28Chris Williamson?

Just everything. There's shitloads of different teas. I, I really like them.

• 1:06:32Speaker 01

  They are good.

• 1:06:34Chris Williamson?

Yeah, iced tea with, with sweetener in.

• 1:06:35Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:06:36Chris Williamson?

Get, get a couple of packets of Splenda, mix that in and.

• 1:06:40Speaker 01

Cause I was just saying, because of like the sizes of the, um, you know, like the paper.

• 1:06:44Chris Williamson?

Well, they got the gallons, like half gallons of fucking.

• 1:06:47Speaker 01

It's mental. Yeah, like they're small is easily our large.

• 1:06:50Chris Williamson?

But anyone who's seen Super Size Me, like the, like the.

• 1:06:53Speaker 01

Yeah, the really good. The Super Size One is genuinely like, it's a bucket.

• 1:06:57Chris Williamson?

Um, right, what have we got?

• 1:07:01Chris Williamson?

Okay, so anyone who goes to the gym, this is the most optimal way to mix your post-workout shake. So most people, and I see this all the time in the gym, people going out and they may either have, what's it called where it's got the grate in, what's that particular style of shaker called?

• 1:07:22Jonny?

  The grata.

• 1:07:23Chris Williamson?

I know. Anyway, so there's two, there's two different, two main types. One is where you've got a little whisk ball and the other one is where you have a grate that goes across the top of the shaker. For either of those shakers, this strategy is the same, although for the whisk, it's slightly more effective. You don't want to be doing a linearly reciprocal motion. This.

• 1:07:43Jonny?

Has to be a hyperbolic parabola.

• 1:07:45Chris Williamson?

  Well, not far off.

• 1:07:48Chris Williamson?

You want to twist, you want to go in rotary, you want to be going side to side. And the way that I know that's true is the original use of the whisk in the protein shaker, that whisk was actually made for whisking eggs. So that whole product wasn't built for protein. Yes, the little ball, whiskey ball.

• 1:08:08Jonny?

  Into a marran.

• 1:08:09Chris Williamson?

Was, it was bit, it was, no, so you'd have a little, a much, a much smaller bottle that had the whisk in. And on the original trademark for that product, the demonstration is like this. So side to side is much more effective. And it just.

• 1:08:27Jonny?

Related question, when you, so imagine, imagine the picture of the scene, you're about to shake a protein shaker. What do you do with your index finger?

• 1:08:35Chris Williamson?

  On top.

• 1:08:35Jonny?

Always on top. I've, oh, I've made that.

• 1:08:38Chris Williamson?

  I fucking tell you.

• 1:08:40Jonny?

So there was a scene in uni, me, flatmate, audio broadcast, we're an audio broadcast room.

• 1:08:45Jonny?

See, we're three people that have learned this lesson the hard way and it's just instinctive now.

• 1:08:51Jonny?

Give a mixture protein shake. So you put two scoops in.

• 1:08:54Chris Williamson?

  Two scoops.

• 1:08:58Jonny?

Screwed the lid on and then just went like this. And as he did that, me and the flatmaker were like, whoa. And he shakes it, obviously nothing happens, but it's crazy that like the.

• 1:09:10Speaker 01

  Visceral reaction.

• 1:09:11Jonny?

Oh mate, put your finger on the lid.

• 1:09:13Speaker 01

You've necessarily got someone who has strong arm flexors and is like doing that violently. And it's like.

• 1:09:19Jonny?

But in the, in like the more modern ones with the, with the whisk ball, the lid does shut down pretty firmly.

• 1:09:25Speaker 01

Yeah, but I, I give it a proper.

• 1:09:27Jonny?

I mean, press it and it almost clicks.

• 1:09:29Chris Williamson?

Really clicks in. So have you transitioned to steel shakers yet?

• 1:09:33Jonny?

  No.

• 1:09:33Chris Williamson?

  I've got, so.

• 1:09:34Jonny?

I keep hearing about this though.

• 1:09:35Chris Williamson?

Thank you to the protein works for giving Johnny his new steel shaker, which I will give him once we finish this podcast.

• 1:09:41Speaker 01

  Fantastic.

• 1:09:41Chris Williamson?

Um, but it's anyone who's out there is listening and.

• 1:09:45Speaker 01

I'm wondering if it's the gold one or the silver one.

• 1:09:47Chris Williamson?

  Orange, matte orange.

• 1:09:48Speaker 01

  Oh, that's fantastic.

• 1:09:50Jonny?

  Metal one.

• 1:09:51Chris Williamson?

  Metal matte orange.

• 1:09:53Speaker 01

  That's very nice.

• 1:09:54Chris Williamson?

  Um, so.

• 1:09:55Jonny?

  They don't smell.

• 1:09:57Chris Williamson?

They smell a lot less, much significantly easier to clean. And it's just the fact that if you drop it, it's like, you know, when you drop one, a, a plastic one, you always like, like as it's about to hit the floor, this is just bulletproof. Ah, and you, over time it gets dense, which is actually like pretty cool and like.

• 1:10:15Speaker 01

It gives it a rustic feel.

• 1:10:16Chris Williamson?

  It's pretty hardcore.

• 1:10:17Speaker 01

So I've been, um, I, I mean, it won't apply much now because of summer, but I've been putting hot water in mine. Because in the plastic one, hot water and plastic, bad idea. But just fill it up with hot water or tea, take it to the gym, warms your hands up on the way in, especially.

• 1:10:33Chris Williamson?

You've transitioned to metal, haven't you?

• 1:10:34Speaker 01

Yeah, because I cycle to the gym as well. So obviously like if you, it's cold outside, you just can't move your hands properly. Tennis elbow.

• 1:10:40Chris Williamson?

  Plastic, plastic shakers.

• 1:10:42Jonny?

Drinking hot liquid in the gym feels wrong.

• 1:10:45Speaker 01

When it's a really cold day, it's so lovely. I think having a cold drink when it's like, like brass testicles cold is.

• 1:10:54Chris Williamson?

I've got two, two elements that are little ancillary bits to doing a shaker. Um, definitely anyone who wants to buy one because they are fantastic and they continue to support the podcast. There will be a link to the steel shaker from the protein works in the, uh, show notes below. And also that will include a, a discount code if I can find one. Um, first thing is when I spoke about the, um, trademark, the patent for it. Have you ever seen the original patent for the toilet roll holder?

• 1:11:21Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:11:22Chris Williamson?

This finishes the debate about whether or not the toilet roll should be set to go over the top or under the bottom.

• 1:11:27Speaker 01

There shouldn't even be a debate.

• 1:11:28Chris Williamson?

  Yeah, I know.

• 1:11:29Jonny?

  So what do you think?

• 1:11:30Speaker 01

  In front.

• 1:11:32Jonny?

  Over the top.

• 1:11:33Speaker 01

So that it's closest to you.

• 1:11:35Chris Williamson?

Yeah, yes, exactly, exactly. And that's how the original patent is.

• 1:11:38Speaker 01

  It's not a psychopath test, isn't it?

• 1:11:39Chris Williamson?

Yeah, it's how the original patent is filed.

• 1:11:42Jonny?

Right, so this is closest to you.

• 1:11:44Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:44Jonny?

  Right.

• 1:11:44Chris Williamson?

  I'm gonna send it up.

• 1:11:46Speaker 01

How do you even do it?

• 1:11:47Chris Williamson?

  Over the top.

• 1:11:48Speaker 01

Behind the back, how do you?

• 1:11:49Chris Williamson?

Just difficulty, like you've got to.

• 1:11:51Jonny?

  What do you mean?

• 1:11:52Speaker 01

So it needs it needs more limbs, doesn't it, to like anchor it in place?

• 1:11:55Chris Williamson?

No, I do you do you have to hold it?

• 1:11:57Jonny?

  Yeah, it's it's a pull and a yank.

• 1:11:58Speaker 01

Yeah, or or to the side.

• 1:12:00Chris Williamson?

  Hmm.

• 1:12:00Jonny?

  I still.

• 1:12:01Chris Williamson?

  You still do that.

• 1:12:03Jonny?

You still be able to do that if it wasn't the side.

• 1:12:04Speaker 01

You've got a fish behind it and like, oh, it's just awkward.

• 1:12:07Chris Williamson?

Presuming there's not a little bit hanging down. I I always now play the game of like, can I? I don't need to know that.

• 1:12:13Speaker 01

  Then you go.

• 1:12:14Chris Williamson?

Just I don't want a second hand. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:12:16Jonny?

  Just to the side.

• 1:12:17Chris Williamson?

Yeah, but it's fun to do.

• 1:12:18Jonny?

  It's a game.

• 1:12:19Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:20Speaker 01

  Yeah. A big downside, though.

• 1:12:22Chris Williamson?

Except, oh, if I mean, I was gonna say, have you ever got it wrong?

• 1:12:25Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 1:12:25Chris Williamson?

Have you ever get it really, really wrong?

• 1:12:27Jonny?

Toilet roll that's out of control is, ah, it always surprises me how.

• 1:12:32Speaker 01

  How quickly things become.

• 1:12:33Jonny?

If you try and roll it back up, you never get it the same.

• 1:12:36Chris Williamson?

  Oh, it's miles away.

• 1:12:38Jonny?

  It's this like soft mess.

• 1:12:39Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:40Speaker 01

Does Dexter not like do that on toilet roll? And I think animals seem to love like unraveling toilet rolls.

• 1:12:47Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:49Speaker 01

How do we get onto that?

• 1:12:51Chris Williamson?

  Chris's tip.

• 1:12:51Speaker 01

  It's no shame.

• 1:12:52Chris Williamson?

  His patent, patent.

• 1:12:53Jonny?

Fire away. What have you got?

• 1:12:54Speaker 01

  I think I'm almost out.

• 1:12:56Chris Williamson?

I mean, we can't be running on empty for life hacks, man.

• 1:12:59Jonny?

  Well, I always expect.

• 1:13:00Speaker 01

I've got a load of repeats if anyone wants some of that.

• 1:13:03Jonny?

So I do have one that it's not really a life hack. The the tip is just Sam Ovens.

• 1:13:08Speaker 01

Oh, Sim. Do you mean Sim?

• 1:13:12Jonny?

  Sim.

• 1:13:12Speaker 01

  Sim Ovens.

• 1:13:13Jonny?

Chris doesn't like Sam Ovens because he's not someone that.

• 1:13:17Speaker 01

  Doesn't look like it.

• 1:13:19Jonny?

Why don't you like Sam Ovens, Chris?

• 1:13:20Chris Williamson?

  Massive virgin.

• 1:13:22Jonny?

  He's got a wife.

• 1:13:23Chris Williamson?

  Massive virgin.

• 1:13:24Jonny?

Okay, so Sam Ovens is a massive virgin pick, Chris. But an interesting guy on YouTube.

• 1:13:32Speaker 01

  I think he's great.

• 1:13:32Chris Williamson?

Give him a watch. What one video from Sam Ovens do you think that everyone should watch? You're gonna get one crack at this and I'm not gonna let you do it again.

• 1:13:41Speaker 01

Oh Christ, things I wish I'd learned in my twenties.

• 1:13:45Jonny?

I mean, it depends what, it depends what the person's interested in.

• 1:13:49Speaker 01

  I mean, that.

• 1:13:49Jonny?

Johnny, you've got one, you've got one. Just go on his YouTube. No, you have one, what, I need to, most popular video on his YouTube at that time, just watch that.

• 1:13:57Speaker 01

So the, cause the life hack audience would like, say, things I wish I'd known, like.

• 1:14:01Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 1:14:02Speaker 01

  The.

• 1:14:02Jonny?

The twenties one's all about business.

• 1:14:04Speaker 01

  Ah, okay, no.

• 1:14:05Jonny?

The online business one's really good. His chaos series is really good. His productivity stuff's really good. Mindful of weed.

• 1:14:12Speaker 01

  The productivity one was good.

• 1:14:14Jonny?

What's the one on productivity? Sam Ovens on YouTube, productivity. Cool. Right, Skone.

• 1:14:20Speaker 01

So, again, tell me if this is a repeat.

• 1:14:24Speaker 01

If someone, this is a submission from Tess, if you're watching Tess.

• 1:14:29Jonny?

  Did she cut your hair?

• 1:14:30Speaker 01

Very good. No. So she is a nurse in Freeman Hospital. And her tip was, if you see a man doing a poo in a plastic bag, in a cubicle, get aggressive immediately. That is the way to stop it. So she opened the cubicle. Um, curtain, saw a man doing a poo in a plastic bag, you are not do, get out of there, you're doing it in the toilet. And she just immediately went on the attack. And I think that is an incredible response to.

• 1:14:59Jonny?

Well, had she have, had she have tried to broach the subject with more diplomacy?

• 1:15:04Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:15:04Jonny?

  Then you would continue pooing.

• 1:15:05Speaker 01

Yeah, it would have been a mess, but he was so shocked by her just being immediately on the offensive.

• 1:15:09Jonny?

Why? Okay, so this is a man in a hospital.

• 1:15:12Speaker 01

  Yeah, but he, but he.

• 1:15:13Jonny?

Why was he pooing in a plastic bag? Unwell, mentally unwell?

• 1:15:16Speaker 01

No, not mentally unwell and not ill enough to have to, to not be able to make it to the.

• 1:15:22Jonny?

  So what was his reason?

• 1:15:23Speaker 01

He was in a cubicle. In, you know, in like a, in a bay.

• 1:15:26Jonny?

I thought you meant. In a toilet. In a toilet cubicle?

• 1:15:29Speaker 01

No, in, just in a bed bay.

• 1:15:30Jonny?

So if you're in a hospital.

• 1:15:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:15:32Jonny?

And you see someone in a hospital bed bay.

• 1:15:35Speaker 01

There's a wider lesson to be, to be gained from this, which I think is like, she had the, the wherewithal to just immediately. Go for it. And so another example, your friend, um, who was the captain of the Newcastle Falcons. Saw some bother going on, immediately ran over, picked up.

• 1:15:58Jonny?

I see. Just got it, got it, got involved.

• 1:16:00Speaker 01

And just put them in a wee, in a wheelie bin?

• 1:16:02Jonny?

  In a wheelie bin.

• 1:16:02Speaker 01

  Yeah, so.

• 1:16:05Chris Williamson?

  So just.

• 1:16:05Speaker 01

  Fully dispensing with people.

• 1:16:06Chris Williamson?

I see, so just, so when you see a problem, don't try and just.

• 1:16:12Speaker 01

Because if you half try and deal with it.

• 1:16:14Chris Williamson?

You may be sticking your nose in and committing overly committing to something that you don't need to then. There's a lot of delicacy that's, it's, I think this is a good life hack for someone who's probably over the age of like twenty five or thirty. I think somebody who's eighteen.

• 1:16:28Speaker 01

Would they be too trigger happy?

• 1:16:29Chris Williamson?

Yeah, they're gonna, they're gonna pull the trigger too soon.

• 1:16:32Speaker 01

So my, my sister says, don't half fight anyone. She's, she's a, um, I mean, she, she's a bit of a fighter, but I think.

• 1:16:39Chris Williamson?

  Bless you.

• 1:16:40Speaker 01

But that, that, that makes sense though, whereas like, you wouldn't, if you went up to someone in the street and you just kind of like bonked them on the nose.

• 1:16:46Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:46Speaker 01

But not like properly, you're gonna end up in a much worse situation than if you just absolutely like.

• 1:16:51Chris Williamson?

  Nail them.

• 1:16:53Speaker 01

It's, I think it's just about. You shouldn't go out and assault someone.

• 1:16:55Chris Williamson?

I think legally, it'd be in a bad position if you just gave him a little bonk.

• 1:16:58Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:16:59Chris Williamson?

Well, because it's escape, it's escape, but it might go from assault to GBH. Where you go from being like a misdemeanor to you go to jail.

• 1:17:09Chris Williamson?

  It's a, it's a fight. I end, I know, I think I know what you're saying.

• 1:17:12Speaker 01

And it doesn't have to be about fights. I suppose it's just about like doing any task, like do it properly.

• 1:17:17Chris Williamson?

Yeah, I feel, I feel so bad for you running out of life hacks, Mike, because I'm just looking at a list that's longer than the list that I've given today. You need, I, I really think, both of us.

• 1:17:25Speaker 01

  Please just reflect.

• 1:17:26Chris Williamson?

Both of us are adamant about the fact that your.

• 1:17:29Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 1:17:30Chris Williamson?

Barrier for what you consider to be a life hack is too high.

• 1:17:34Chris Williamson?

  I think that I.

• 1:17:35Speaker 01

Many blind spots that you, uh, great.

• 1:17:36Chris Williamson?

So I, I, between life hacks episodes, not much changes in what I do.

• 1:17:41Speaker 01

But within the productivity realm, I think you, you've got that down because you're operating under no constraints. Which people think is great, but actually it's the hard, it's operate, it's productivity on hard.

• 1:17:53Chris Williamson?

  Hard rock's a choice, isn't it?

• 1:17:54Speaker 01

Yeah, because you wake up and it's like, I could just stay in bed and no one would notice. So.

• 1:17:59Chris Williamson?

Uh, right. So I am gonna do a final one and it's quite a nice one. Actually, I'd be interested to hear both of your thoughts on. Um, drive without any music or sound play. So a lot of. But certainly in this room, all of us will be um. Optimization evangelists trying to, oh, well, I've got this drive, I'm not doing anything else. Auditorily, I can use this time to learn or catch up on something or listen to some music that gets me in a mood which is optimal for what I'm about to do. Maybe if you're going to the gym, that's how I do it. Um, but recently I have. Read uh Digital Minimalism by Carl Newport.

• 1:18:41Chris Williamson?

And in Digital Minimalism, he gives a fantastic definition of solitude. You remember that?

• 1:18:47Speaker 01

  Vaguely.

• 1:18:48Chris Williamson?

So solitude is a time when your mind is free from the input of other minds. And that's different to being on your own.

• 1:18:56Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 1:18:57Chris Williamson?

Um, and also different to being lonely. Loneliness is something which is unhealthy. And time on your own, where you still have the input of other minds, is not solitude.

• 1:19:06Speaker 01

Does he use walking as an example? Do you go for long walks?

• 1:19:09Chris Williamson?

Yes, one of the things that he does. But um, yeah, so I've just been doing a drive. Again, I've instantiated it into my day, so mine is now a part of my morning routine. So my morning drive to the gym is done in silence. And that will be after I've journaled, meditated, read a book and potentially done some deep work. So if there was ever a time to sit in silence and reflect about what's just gone on and how I'm going to spend my day ahead and.

• 1:19:37Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 1:19:37Chris Williamson?

Stuff like that, it's then. And I have to say, driving without any music on and without any sound on is actually really nice and engaging. Um, taking in a little bit more of the scenery, allowing myself to bookend whatever learning I've just gone through. Um, it's. I'd be interested to see if you guys implement it, how it works for you. I know that.

• 1:19:58Speaker 01

I do it occasionally, because well, like, driving is even on it on its own, quite a complex task, but. After like a year, a year after passing your test, you kind of forget that it was ever hard.

• 1:20:08Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:09Speaker 01

But there's so much going on that if you make to make a, you know, a seventeen year old just learning to drive.

• 1:20:16Chris Williamson?

Playing some loud metal music at the same time, overwhelmed.

• 1:20:19Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:19Chris Williamson?

  Overwhelmed.

• 1:20:20Jonny?

I I think I do it automatically after training. Cause I just like after training, I just like.

• 1:20:27Chris Williamson?

  Want to chill out.

• 1:20:27Jonny?

I just want people to leave me alone. You know, you you've just been listening to heavy stuff.

• 1:20:31Chris Williamson?

That's what powerlifting will do. I guess with like frying your CNS so bad, especially if you're lifting heavy. Yeah.

• 1:20:36Jonny?

And you've had like loud music, heavy stimulus. I don't want like a podcast or a book or music, just quiet.

• 1:20:42Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:43Jonny?

But it's not, I'm probably not getting the same benefits as when you're in a fresher state of mind.

• 1:20:48Chris Williamson?

Yeah. I'd be interested if you if you adopt it. I'd be really interested to see how you feel. Or maybe when you do your morning walk to.

• 1:20:53Jonny?

So I've been doing a few walks, but by accident.

• 1:20:56Chris Williamson?

  Silence.

• 1:20:57Jonny?

Yeah. Like my my phone will be low on battery or.

• 1:21:00Chris Williamson?

Oh shit. How's the new AirPods?

• 1:21:03Jonny?

  Fine.

• 1:21:06Jonny?

  I.

• 1:21:06Chris Williamson?

  So I got new AirPods.

• 1:21:07Speaker 01

You heard it first here, guys.

• 1:21:08Chris Williamson?

I think that the fact I think that the fact that you haven't come in singing and dancing about AirPods twos means that.

• 1:21:15Jonny?

Also, had I not lost my AirPods, I wouldn't have bought AirPods twos. Put it that way.

• 1:21:19Chris Williamson?

Why didn't you buy AirPods? Oh, cause you had inquisitiveness. Looking back, do you wish that you'd saved to thirty or forty quid?

• 1:21:24Jonny?

Um, so I think they'd be better if I had.

• 1:21:28Speaker 01

I don't think Johnny could live with himself with AirPods one when AirPods two.

• 1:21:31Chris Williamson?

Yeah, you would have done had you have already had them and now with the benefit of hindsight.

• 1:21:37Jonny?

So, okay, so the the Hey Siri functionality is cool. So if he.

• 1:21:43Chris Williamson?

  She just loves it.

• 1:21:43Jonny?

It's so responsive. Um, so if you use that.

• 1:21:48Speaker 01

  Hey Siri.

• 1:21:51Jonny?

  There you go.

• 1:21:52Chris Williamson?

I think that's just the slowness of your book.

• 1:21:53Jonny?

Yeah, well, it might. It might be that you've got quite an old phone.

• 1:21:56Speaker 01

  The Koran's too.

• 1:21:57Jonny?

  Koran.

• 1:21:58Chris Williamson?

  Koran.

• 1:21:59Jonny?

A Koran. Don't worry, Habibi, it's a macro. So that that functionality is really cool. Um, I asked someone else about the double tap left, double tap right.

• 1:22:09Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:10Jonny?

He told me that they, their feature, their AirPod ones don't have skip songs on.

• 1:22:16Chris Williamson?

They're not using the functioning, the functionality correctly. It's in settings on.

• 1:22:21Jonny?

  This is Ben.

• 1:22:23Chris Williamson?

  This, Ben.

• 1:22:25Jonny?

  Ben's got it wrong.

• 1:22:26Chris Williamson?

Ben isn't using it right, yeah.

• 1:22:27Jonny?

  I'll put that to Ben.

• 1:22:28Chris Williamson?

Sorry, Ben. Your, your app is not temperamental and neither are AirPods. They're a piece of technology, just the same as the rest of ours.

• 1:22:36Speaker 01

He really squeezes the lemon with the Apple infrastructure and uses it to its end.

• 1:22:41Chris Williamson?

  I'm afraid.

• 1:22:41Jonny?

  Can I see yours?

• 1:22:42Chris Williamson?

  We have found.

• 1:22:43Jonny?

We have found where the rubber meets the road, my friend. So anyway, so that, that feature for me was cool because for me that was a.

• 1:22:50Speaker 01

Chris, let me just get my phone up.

• 1:22:52Jonny?

  Right.

• 1:22:53Chris Williamson?

Hello? Do you know what's happening tomorrow? I'm actually getting a new phone. I can't do it because I'm not connected, sorry. Um.

• 1:23:00Speaker 01

  Convenient.

• 1:23:00Jonny?

So what I was gonna, what I was gonna say was, if I had an iPhone X or whatever with wireless charging.

• 1:23:08Chris Williamson?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:23:08Jonny?

And I had a wireless charging mat.

• 1:23:10Chris Williamson?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:23:10Jonny?

You'd get a lot of benefit out of that, I think, being able to wirelessly charge your headphones. Just nice.

• 1:23:14Chris Williamson?

It's just, for me, induction charging is such a gimmick. The only thing that I can see that works for induction charging is what's come out on those new Samsungs. Where you can share, we can share charge between phones. So if I've got a hundred percent and you've got like ten percent, you can take some of my charge, yeah. And that is fucking.

• 1:23:36Jonny?

What about being able to charge your headphones on the phone?

• 1:23:38Chris Williamson?

Okay, yeah, so charging, charging other devices.

• 1:23:41Jonny?

  From them.

• 1:23:41Chris Williamson?

On a device which currently doesn't charge the devices.

• 1:23:44Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 1:23:44Chris Williamson?

But all that you need is a lightning to lightning cable and for Apple to have that in an iPhone.

• 1:23:49Jonny?

Yeah, why don't they do that?

• 1:23:51Chris Williamson?

  Don't know.

• 1:23:52Jonny?

  That doesn't exist, does it?

• 1:23:53Chris Williamson?

  No.

• 1:23:53Jonny?

  Right.

• 1:23:54Chris Williamson?

  No.

• 1:23:54Speaker 01

You might be able to get a bean one, but.

• 1:23:56Chris Williamson?

I don't think you can, you can't send.

• 1:23:58Jonny?

  Charge from the.

• 1:23:59Chris Williamson?

  You can't send charge.

• 1:24:00Speaker 01

I see, it would just be like.

• 1:24:03Chris Williamson?

It would be sucking power out of both of them, which is a bad idea.

• 1:24:07Jonny?

You end up in zero on both.

• 1:24:08Chris Williamson?

So, so, so that, that functionality is nice, but they are the same, they're the same essentially. Uh, I am, the next time that we do a life hacks, I'll have a XS Max. The, the, the pro, pro one, like.

• 1:24:24Jonny?

  The largest, best.

• 1:24:25Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:25Speaker 01

  This big.

• 1:24:26Jonny?

  The size of this sofa.

• 1:24:27Chris Williamson?

  Oh, God, it's large.

• 1:24:29Speaker 01

  It'd be like.

• 1:24:29Chris Williamson?

So I'll see, I will be able to.

• 1:24:30Jonny?

It'd be interesting, so Beck has got an X, I think.

• 1:24:35Chris Williamson?

  Nor X.

• 1:24:35Jonny?

Yeah, so, but like not having that button takes a while, like just when you're using it.

• 1:24:40Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:40Jonny?

And you have to use the side button a lot more and then knock it with your face and all that stuff. I imagine once you're used to it, it's.

• 1:24:46Chris Williamson?

I'm gonna miss, I'm gonna miss having the home button, but it's getting.

• 1:24:49Speaker 01

Ben got his for one, was it?

• 1:24:52Jonny?

  It was really cheap.

• 1:24:53Speaker 01

He got it for one pound effectively because of the, or for one pound cheaper than.

• 1:24:58Jonny?

It was, it was a Black Friday like Vodafone deal.

• 1:25:01Speaker 01

He basically got the overlap of about twelve different discount events all in one.

• 1:25:06Chris Williamson?

Again, the problem with that is that we're buying our SIM free. Me and Darren will both be going in to buy our SIM free without contract and the contract's dealt with separately, so. Um.

• 1:25:15Jonny?

So he's keeping the same SIM, keeping the same.

• 1:25:18Chris Williamson?

Keep the same, everything buys in free, move everything across, like that, again, for anyone who's listening, that's a fucking fantastic life hack. Buy your phone, if you've got the cash, buy your phone outright.

• 1:25:28Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:28Chris Williamson?

Because the deal that you can get on your contract, you're paying over the odds to finance the phone from someone who's not built to finance phones.

• 1:25:35Speaker 01

What people don't realise when they take out consumer credit, which is what it is when you either pay, opt to pay your insurance monthly or you get a phone contract that's monthly and you get the phone for free, is that you're taking out an extremely high interest loan and a.

• 1:25:54Chris Williamson?

  Sub quality.

• 1:25:55Speaker 01

  Sub yeah.

• 1:25:55Chris Williamson?

  Contract deal.

• 1:25:56Speaker 01

An overpriced contract deal for what you get. But because people don't really annualize it, people don't multiply out the time, you're you're getting absolutely rinsed.

• 1:26:04Chris Williamson?

A lot of people are used to paying like thirty quid a month or whatever for their phone. They think it's just the next phone. Some phone companies, mine nearly did this to me. Once you reach the end of your.

• 1:26:14Speaker 01

  They just go like.

• 1:26:15Chris Williamson?

They keep charging you at the rate that you've been paying.

• 1:26:19Speaker 01

Oh, sometimes they even increase as well.

• 1:26:20Chris Williamson?

Once you paid the phone off, technically, you that's the debt paid.

• 1:26:24Speaker 01

  Motherfuckers.

• 1:26:24Chris Williamson?

They continue just billing you forty quid.

• 1:26:27Speaker 01

  Jeez.

• 1:26:27Chris Williamson?

So you have to ring them and say, downgrade me to a sim only contract.

• 1:26:31Speaker 01

You need to use Bill Monitor, which I can't remember. It might have been Lifehacks one oh one.

• 1:26:35Chris Williamson?

  Not not spoken about yet.

• 1:26:36Speaker 01

  Oh, okay.

• 1:26:38Chris Williamson?

That motherfucker. Is this like Toby?

• 1:26:41Speaker 01

This is developed, this is developed by Oxford mathematicians.

• 1:26:45Chris Williamson?

  Oh, God.

• 1:26:45Speaker 01

It's like, it's an algorithmic market search. You put in the constraints or you you give them the login for your previous contract data, your usage.

• 1:26:55Chris Williamson?

  Is this only for phones?

• 1:26:56Speaker 01

For phones, yeah. So minutes versus, uh, minutes allowance versus minutes used data, et cetera. And it finds what is the best contract or combination of offers across any network. And you set, do you want sim free? Do you want contracts? Do you want, um, how much data do you want or whatever? But ultimately, you can just put it all in and it'll it'll just generate it for you based on your usage.

• 1:27:19Chris Williamson?

Apple's new trade in feature is awesome. So this is going, I'm I'll be trading this in tomorrow.

• 1:27:25Speaker 01

They'll not give you like ten quid for it, though.

• 1:27:27Chris Williamson?

Two hundred and seventy five quid, which is twenty quid more than musicmagpie.com will give me.

• 1:27:31Speaker 01

I thought Music Magpie would be a rip as well, though, wouldn't it?

• 1:27:34Chris Williamson?

So where I got rid of my last one, Music Magpie is not bad.

• 1:27:36Speaker 01

What would it sell on Amazon for? Or?

• 1:27:40Chris Williamson?

  Well, a refurbished one.

• 1:27:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:27:41Chris Williamson?

Oh, fuck knows, probably a lot, probably five hundred quid. But I can't do it that way. And I'm not, I can't be bothered with eBay. I can't be bothered with Facebook Marketplace.

• 1:27:48Speaker 01

So it's quite good if you if if you just want no admin.

• 1:27:51Chris Williamson?

Yeah, and it's in the realm, like, you're only gonna get, so two hundred and seventy five for that.

• 1:27:56Speaker 01

  But three hundred difference, though.

• 1:27:57Chris Williamson?

Well, okay, no, no, so two hundred quid, two hundred and twenty five.

• 1:28:01Jonny?

I don't think the difference is that big, you know, I don't think it.

• 1:28:03Chris Williamson?

Maybe four hundred quid actually, maybe maybe even less.

• 1:28:05Jonny?

Cause if people don't want, like typically.

• 1:28:08Chris Williamson?

That's a seven plus, that's like three years old now.

• 1:28:10Jonny?

You'd probably get an X or an eight, but I think if you go much older, cause you run into software problems.

• 1:28:17Speaker 01

  Yeah, because they get granddad.

• 1:28:19Jonny?

They just price them out of the.

• 1:28:20Chris Williamson?

Mine, mine's starting to get problems, but this has been the longest lasting one, like three years, just under three years, three years in September with the same phone.

• 1:28:28Jonny?

So this is exactly the same. It's getting battery issues and.

• 1:28:33Chris Williamson?

So I've replaced the battery in mine on the last day, the last day that Apple Care existed.

• 1:28:36Jonny?

  Oh, right, yeah.

• 1:28:39Chris Williamson?

  Consumer law.

• 1:28:40Jonny?

  Consumer, you love consumer law.

• 1:28:41Chris Williamson?

Yeah, that's what happens when you've got friends that work in Apple, they replace things under consumer law.

• 1:28:47Jonny?

They do it, cause I was, I was looking, cause you know, the, um, the most expensive MacBook. It's like six, so I was seeing what is the most expensive MacBook to prove.

• 1:28:55Chris Williamson?

  Spec the fucking thing.

• 1:28:56Jonny?

And it is like six and a half grand. But they do a.

• 1:29:06Jonny?

But they do it, they do a MacBook trade in, which I swear they didn't used to do. So when you, when you're at the checkout, um, it says, would you like to trade in a MacBook and you put in your serial number?

• 1:29:15Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:16Jonny?

  And they give you.

• 1:29:16Chris Williamson?

  Yep.

• 1:29:17Jonny?

I think it was, mine was like five hundred quid or something.

• 1:29:19Speaker 01

Ah, I've just missed that then, they, they didn't do it, right?

• 1:29:23Jonny?

  What do you mean?

• 1:29:24Speaker 01

  Like I.

• 1:29:25Chris Williamson?

You just got rid of it.

• 1:29:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:26Jonny?

I think you sold it, you've got more money than.

• 1:29:28Speaker 01

  Ebay nightmare though.

• 1:29:29Jonny?

  Oh, did you? I remember.

• 1:29:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:31Chris Williamson?

  Can we talk about it?

• 1:29:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:34Chris Williamson?

Are you outside of the libelous window for it?

• 1:29:36Speaker 01

  Probably.

• 1:29:36Jonny?

  I don't, there's no such thing.

• 1:29:37Speaker 01

  I mean, it.

• 1:29:38Jonny?

  You really want.

• 1:29:39Speaker 01

Like, it was the guy's fault, but, um, I sold a MacBook.

• 1:29:45Speaker 01

  And.

• 1:29:45Jonny?

  Drenched in porn, I imagine.

• 1:29:49Jonny?

  Ripping with porn.

• 1:29:50Speaker 01

So it said, like, these are the specs, here, here, here it is working and it was fine, I had the motherboard replaced and I tested it. Worked absolutely fine, did all the like the proper, the proper Apple diagnostic tests through the thing. Included the results on that. Guy bought it. He was a tech guy and I think he'd been tampering with it. Um, forty eight days after buying it, he sent me a photo of the app of it working, saying like, oh, the battery's not very good. It's like, well, yeah, it's a six year old laptop and it said, I said on the thing, like, I included the battery health and the number of cycles and stuff. And the following day, he was like, oh, now it doesn't turn on at all. You're like, oh, that's, that's interesting. The day after you sent me a picture of it working,

• 1:30:32Speaker 01

forty nine days after you bought it, it's suddenly not working at all. And he's like, I want a refund. It's like, well, I don't really know, like, what you expected. Like, I'm sorry it's failed, but it was working when I sold it to you. Devices don't. And he escalated it to eBay and then eBay were like, no, escalated to PayPal.

• 1:30:55Jonny?

Have you, have you had your account shut down on PayPal?

• 1:30:57Speaker 01

No, PayPal ruled in my favour. Oh, that's good. Cause they were like.

• 1:31:02Jonny?

  This guy's a plab.

• 1:31:03Speaker 01

  You bought something that, yeah.

• 1:31:04Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:04Speaker 01

So I, I think what he'd done is he tried to like, play with the thing himself, broke it and then was like, oh, I want a refund.

• 1:31:12Jonny?

So I sold my, before my current laptop, I sold a MacBook on eBay to a guy, sounds very similar to that. And I had an argument with him in a car park.

• 1:31:20Speaker 01

  He called me a scoundrel.

• 1:31:22Jonny?

  A scoundrel.

• 1:31:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:31:23Jonny?

Said you absolute scoundrel. I, so this guy, I'm, I'm in Shell Garage, um, car park at Newcastle Airport, dealing with this guy.

• 1:31:32Speaker 01

  What, in, in person?

• 1:31:33Jonny?

I, I met him in person, yeah.

• 1:31:34Speaker 01

  As opposed to mailing it?

• 1:31:36Jonny?

Yeah. Well, he was relatively local, so he'd driven to there.

• 1:31:40Speaker 01

  And he was where?

• 1:31:41Jonny?

  Shell Garage, Newcastle Airport.

• 1:31:43Speaker 01

There is a certain type of personality of people that.

• 1:31:46Jonny?

  Buy a second hand Mac.

• 1:31:48Speaker 01

Yeah, and I've realised eBay is much more of a headache than it gets. And they charge like fifteen, thirty percent.

• 1:31:54Jonny?

Facebook Marketplace, they can find out where you work.

• 1:31:57Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah, true.

• 1:32:00Chris Williamson?

  And what did he say?

• 1:32:01Jonny?

He was just, like, he was picking the whole thing apart. And I just, I sat there thinking, like, this is getting to the point now when this wasn't worth it. Like, when you net eBay fees and the time, like, the questions he had about it before we got to this point and the que- like, questions now, you just think, like, I think, I think I saw, it was a MacBook, eh, eleven inch thing.

• 1:32:23Speaker 01

So what do you expect? Like, you, you, you getting a?

• 1:32:26Jonny?

So I ju- I just think people who buy stuff like that, that's quite old and very, like, off pace of what's available.

• 1:32:32Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:32Jonny?

They're just a certain type of person.

• 1:32:34Chris Williamson?

They're already trying to drill down.

• 1:32:36Jonny?

  To the finest possible.

• 1:32:37Chris Williamson?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:38Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:38Chris Williamson?

But they want, it's the same as the people who sign up for your six pound one-off course, and also complain about the fact that it's not fully customized and doesn't in- involve like a personal call once a week.

• 1:32:49Speaker 01

Hey, this, this doesn't have three thousand pounds worth of coaching in the six pound product.

• 1:32:54Jonny?

But Apple just avoid all of this, don't they?

• 1:32:56Chris Williamson?

By just pricing themselves super high.

• 1:32:58Jonny?

Things are expensive and you can afford it, you can't. And enough people can't.

• 1:33:01Chris Williamson?

  Fuck off.

• 1:33:02Jonny?

They, they don't need to deal with the.

• 1:33:04Chris Williamson?

Man, the general, the general public, like, sometimes when I get exposed to the general public, like, you, places like planes and airport, like, waiting, waiting.

• 1:33:15Speaker 01

Planes is the big one because you're forced in a, in a container.

• 1:33:18Chris Williamson?

I was on a train, I was messaging you guys the last time that I was on a train, and the train picked up, um, some young partygoers in York and dropped them off in Darlington. And I heard for the entirety of the journey from York to Darlington, I heard them argue about whose house they were going to have the pre-party at, like, the whole way. I'm just like, look, guys, I don't want to go all podcast on you here, but life actually is too short. And if yours isn't too short, then mine fucking is. And by the way, this is B Coach, which is the quiet coach, so can everyone leave?

• 1:33:52Speaker 01

Yeah, people choosing to go on the quiet coach to just have.

• 1:33:55Chris Williamson?

Gesticulate about this. And there was one girl of this whole, like, situation was going on.

• 1:34:00Speaker 01

Sensory assault as well, and they have like hairspray and you're like.

• 1:34:03Chris Williamson?

Oh, it was, yeah, it was multimedia.

• 1:34:06Speaker 01

  Not only like infiltrating, yeah.

• 1:34:08Chris Williamson?

And, uh, this one girl kept on. Saying, so they were talking about, are they gonna have it at Dan's house, or are they gonna have it at Chris's house? Dan wanted it at his house and Chris wanted it at his house. No, Chris mate, we're gonna have it at my house. And then he'd say, no, Dan mate, we're gonna have it at mine. But every time that Chris said, we're gonna have it at my house, his girlfriend piped up and said, our house, Chris. Every single time, we're gonna have it at my house, our house, we're gonna have it at my house, our house. Like the whole time, and I was like, surely she's gonna give up here. Every time that he said it, she corrected him. I'm like, fair play to that girl, like draw lines in the sand, we said it in, in uh, Relationships 101. But I kind of get the impression that you and Chris aren't gonna last that long.

• 1:34:53Speaker 01

Maybe Chris was clinically deaf and that's why he was suggesting to Dan.

• 1:34:57Chris Williamson?

That's why he was shouting. Listen, Dan, my house, and that's why they went in the quiet coach, because they thought that he'd be.

• 1:35:02Jonny?

Because they thought it was sound.

• 1:35:04Chris Williamson?

  And it wasn't.

• 1:35:05Jonny?

I've witnessed Yusuf. So we were on the way back from, I think, London, I can't remember where we'd been. And it was noisy and it got, some people got on the train really drunk and this, two guys started.

• 1:35:16Speaker 01

  He was singing Sweet Caroline.

• 1:35:18Jonny?

Sweet Caroline. And I could just watch the tide just go like this, and I kept saying.

• 1:35:25Speaker 01

It was, it was O T and leaflets all over again.

• 1:35:29Jonny?

Like, just let it go, just let it go. And he was like, yeah, you're right, continue talking. And then I would say something and have to say it again. And when I said it again, I just saw him go.

• 1:35:39Chris Williamson?

Actually, before this, can you, straight down the pipe of that camera and into the microphone, so the listeners at home here. Can you explain the thing that Yusuf does before he's about to deliver some news that you know someone doesn't want?

• 1:35:52Jonny?

  There's a, there's almost like a multiple gasps of breath, so it's.

• 1:36:03Jonny?

  So I wa- I watched.

• 1:36:04Chris Williamson?

Do you not think it's faster than that? I think it's the the frequency's a bit more like.

• 1:36:09Jonny?

  No, it's not. It's definitely a.

• 1:36:13Chris Williamson?

What do you think it's due to?

• 1:36:15Speaker 01

I think it's a vestige from when I used to have a stutter when I was little.

• 1:36:19Chris Williamson?

Oh, so that would be your warm up.

• 1:36:21Speaker 01

Yeah, so sometimes certain syllables wouldn't come out. So you had to almost trick your brain into either. Pretending you're gonna sing the syllable.

• 1:36:29Jonny?

  Yep.

• 1:36:30Speaker 01

Or like take an inhale and then go.

• 1:36:33Jonny?

What it looks like is you're just looking for a space in the conversation to say something. It doesn't it doesn't look like a tick or anything.

• 1:36:39Speaker 01

That's good. I'm glad it doesn't just look like.

• 1:36:44Jonny?

But so and when you see that happen, it's like.

• 1:36:46Chris Williamson?

  Oh, crap.

• 1:36:48Jonny?

  Get down.

• 1:36:48Speaker 01

  Take cover.

• 1:36:49Jonny?

Um, and you said. I think the words were like.

• 1:36:55Jonny?

I don't mean this in a nasty way, Dave. You said something like, can you just keep it down a bit, please, mate?

• 1:37:05Jonny?

Why would you make me down that way? Yeah, very Mark Corrigan. And this the carriage literally just went. No noise. And there was a day and and then the a couple of people go like, yeah, just keep it down. And like the the the woman that was with the couple went like, see, I told you. And then and literally this the carriage was then silenced.

• 1:37:25Chris Williamson?

You're a man of the people. You're a man of the people.

• 1:37:28Speaker 01

Man of the, well, like, they were being so.

• 1:37:31Jonny?

Temperature and noise are the things that you can't abide.

• 1:37:34Speaker 01

Well, I've got PTSD from flying to New York years ago because someone in front of me was doing like the most. They must have had like a toxic mega colon or something. It was like.

• 1:37:47Chris Williamson?

  Is that the medical term?

• 1:37:48Speaker 01

  Oh, it it was like.

• 1:37:49Jonny?

Is that like a big piece of punctuation?

• 1:37:51Speaker 01

  KFC puff puffs.

• 1:37:52Jonny?

  Oh, God.

• 1:37:53Speaker 01

For for a five hour flight.

• 1:37:54Chris Williamson?

Can you think of a particular medical issue that they might have had? Can you name us a medical issue?

• 1:37:59Speaker 01

I think just probably like irritable bowel or like.

• 1:38:01Chris Williamson?

Is there not? Is there not a funnier wording one?

• 1:38:03Speaker 01

  Some, some really.

• 1:38:05Jonny?

  Might have been glands related.

• 1:38:08Chris Williamson?

Uh, cliteromegalyneagram. Have you considered it might have been cliteromegalyneagram?

• 1:38:13Speaker 01

It may well have been, but but that that's tends not to be characterized by a fried chicken puff puff.

• 1:38:21Speaker 01

It was so awful, like, oh, I just dry retch him for the whole journey.

• 1:38:25Jonny?

What is it, like five hours or something?

• 1:38:27Speaker 01

They kept doing it, it was like, yeah, I mean, fair enough, like, they can't fart anywhere else, but.

• 1:38:32Jonny?

  That's a really good point.

• 1:38:33Chris Williamson?

Mate, can you not fart inside?

• 1:38:34Jonny?

Cause it's actually on a plane, almost more selfish to get up every time and go to the toilet to fart.

• 1:38:40Chris Williamson?

  Is it?

• 1:38:40Jonny?

If you, well, think how often you'd have to ask the person next to you to move and.

• 1:38:43Chris Williamson?

  Choose an aisle seat.

• 1:38:45Jonny?

  Oh, man.

• 1:38:45Chris Williamson?

If you're gonna fart, choose an aisle seat. I've got so many travelling ones that I've got over the last week. I am.

• 1:38:50Speaker 01

We may have to theme the life hacks, I reckon that'll get Johnny's juices.

• 1:38:53Jonny?

Yeah, that's what I need, I need some.

• 1:38:54Chris Williamson?

I'm not theming the life hacks, man, you're just gonna start taking them down. People like the pick and mix nature, right?

• 1:39:00Jonny?

  I'll try my best.

• 1:39:01Chris Williamson?

So, um, I'll finish on this, yesterday, uh, I was on a plane back from New York and there was a guy sat behind me and I didn't turn around and look properly. So I put my seat in, leaned it back and then immediately felt like some movement in my lower back. And I was like, it's a bit weird, he mustn't have sorted his stuff out. And then I heard him say something pretty quickly after I'd done it. I turned around, it was maybe a late forties American man who said something to the effect of, why have you moved your seat back? And I said, that's what the button's for.

  That's a, that's a Chris response.

• 1:39:37Chris Williamson?

And he said, well, no one else on the planes moved their seat back.

• 1:39:41Speaker 01

It's like, you can move your seat back just as much and then we're all.

• 1:39:44Chris Williamson?

So I, I, I then said to him, I was like, look, I'm not moving their seats back, I'm moving my seat back. Then just went back to reading me book, reading me book.

• 1:39:55Chris Williamson?

Ten minutes of constant movement in my lower back. And I thought, this guy must have brought his knees up to his chest to annoy me or something. I'm like, how infantile is this guy? And I'm reading, still reading my book, enjoying it.

• 1:40:08Speaker 01

  Always get someone like.

• 1:40:09Chris Williamson?

But yeah, that's what I was, I was thinking, surely not. So anyway, I turned around and I said, after ten minutes, I'm like, oh, we're getting a little bit agitated here, my zen's getting lost. Is there an issue politely, is there a problem? Um, it's this, it's that.

• 1:40:26Speaker 01

  That's so awful.

• 1:40:28Chris Williamson?

He was sat next to his daughter and wife as well. So, and I'm like, look, like, is there, is there an issue? And he said, look, uh, there's just, there's not a lot of room here. Um, I.

• 1:40:37Speaker 01

  Was he a long man?

• 1:40:38Chris Williamson?

So, uh, he, I had already made the decision, I'd already made the decision to myself that I was just gonna move my seat up. I was like, I would much sooner have my journey in peace than have to interact with this man. And I think that that generally in itself is a good heuristic to use for these sorts of situations. Like, yes, you're succeeding ground and maybe you shouldn't, but immediately, it's not about win and lose. It's not about he's got the victory and you've got the loss. It's about the fact that you were at peace with your situation. And that to me was much more satisfying.

• 1:41:11Speaker 01

If you have to sit more upright.

• 1:41:12Chris Williamson?

It's slightly a bit more upright, but I don't have his knees in my back anymore. And it turned out.

• 1:41:15Speaker 01

I thought you were gonna say when you moved it back that he had his head down for something and then he'd pinned it in place.

• 1:41:20Chris Williamson?

No, that would have been. So it didn't get worse than that? No, so I, he turned, he said, um.

• 1:41:26Chris Williamson?

Uh, I'm six foot four, like, and he, like, sure enough, like, he couldn't move his knees out of the way. And I hadn't even moved my seat all the way back. Six foot four, then the lady came around and, uh, uh, got some drinks and he passed me a coffee and said, thank you very much for that. And then when he went to sleep, said, I'm gonna sleep with my legs out to the side of, in the aisle, cause we were both in the aisle, like, feel free to move your seat back now. And then asked me a bunch of questions about how he used Uber in London for him and his family when we got off, off the plane at the end. And I thought.

• 1:41:54Speaker 01

Did he buy you a coffee or did he just get one?

• 1:41:56Chris Williamson?

It was a free, it was a free coffee, but she'd run out of coffee at him.

• 1:41:59Speaker 01

  Uh, as a gesture.

• 1:42:00Chris Williamson?

So she was gonna turn around and go back and she was like, oh, do you want a coffee? He wasn't just trying to shag your seat with coffee? Yeah, he just threw it at my back. But yeah, I think from that, I was like, yeah, let's succeed a little bit of ground. And just enjoy that. And then on top of that as well, the actual final outcome of it was me feeling like that guy had a nice journey. I didn't do this and we improved a bit international relations. It's if you're gonna sell at seven quid an hour. So seven twenty. Seven twenty six now. Yeah.

• 1:42:26Speaker 01

That was a heartwarming story to. It was.
