• 0:05Rachel Cruze?

  Hey guys, I'm Rachel Cruz.

• 0:06George Kamel?

  I'm George Kamel.

• 0:07Rachel Cruze?

  And this is

• 0:08George Kamel?

  Smart Money Happy Hour.

• 0:11Rachel Cruze?

  Cheers, George.

• 0:12George Kamel?

  Cheers.

• 0:15Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, so refreshing.

• 0:16George Kamel?

  I'm thankful for this drink.

• 0:17Rachel Cruze?

Let's just be thankful all around. Well, this is the show where two friends who happen to be money experts talk about what you're talking about. So everything from pop culture, current events, and money.

• 0:28George Kamel?

And today, we're talking about the gift of gifts. We're leaning into the holiday cheer.

• 0:35Rachel Cruze?

So great, because today, George, right now, if you are watching when this episode releases, it is Thanksgiving.

• 0:43George Kamel?

And we're not with our families, we're here for you. That's how much we care about you guys, and I hope you're with people that you love, doing things that you love. Maybe you're in a car, maybe you're avoiding family, I don't know.

• 0:53Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, maybe they're traveling to grandmother's house down the highway this Thanksgiving.

• 0:59George Kamel?

  Little Red Riding Hood?

• 1:00Rachel Cruze?

I don't know, and you're like, listening to us while the kids are watching something in the back? Thank you. Or maybe you're up in a bedroom at your in-laws trying to just get away from the craziness, and you just need a little, a little lighthearted cheer, and you've turned us on.

• 1:13George Kamel?

  We're gonna bring that.

• 1:14Rachel Cruze?

Either way, happy Thanksgiving. I love Thanksgiving, do you?

• 1:18George Kamel?

  I'm a fan. There's something that's a, I don't know, that's not dramatic, it's not stressful. Christmas feels a little more stressful.

• 1:25Rachel Cruze?

Because we're about to get into Christmas, and we're gonna talk about gift giving in this episode, so we have you covered.

• 1:30George Kamel?

But you're not hauling like, a whole bunch of gifts, you're just like, bringing something to the dinner, maybe? Like a bottle of wine, some food.

• 1:36Rachel Cruze?

Just a good meal. So what are we sipping on, George, as we're talking about this?

• 1:38George Kamel?

Speaking of wine, this is a mocktail. It's called a Red Sans Gria. You like the pun there?

• 1:45Rachel Cruze?

  Sands, love it.

• 1:46George Kamel?

So there's no alcohol in this, but if you, this is a great one to make on Thanksgiving, honestly. So if you need a drink tonight, you're gonna get the recipe in the show notes, and the rating, and the cost per glass at the end of the episode.

• 1:58Rachel Cruze?

So delicious. Okay, George, it's Thanksgiving, so what is one thing you're thankful for?

• 2:03George Kamel?

Recently, I think my daughter is the most recent thing I'm grateful for. And watching Whitney be the most amazing mom. I tell her all the time.

• 2:11Rachel Cruze?

  She's great.

• 2:11George Kamel?

I tell Mia, like, you have the most amazing mom who cares about you so much. Every decision has so much thought. And I'm grateful for them as a package, package deal.

• 2:22Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, a package deal. You're family.

• 2:24George Kamel?

  How about you?

• 2:25Rachel Cruze?

I love it. I'll be the same vein. I think family. Yeah, the kids, Winston, are like little nuclear family, extended family is great too. Love y'all.

• 2:35George Kamel?

I never heard the nuclear, I never hear it spoken like that.

• 2:38Rachel Cruze?

Just like our little nuclear family, like our little Winston Cruzes.

• 2:43George Kamel?

  They are precious.

• 2:45Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, but I would say that, you know, it's a, it's a big deal. It's things that you take for granted sometimes the day to day. That's why like Thanksgiving kind of causes you to pause and be like, man.

• 2:55George Kamel?

Do you guys go around the table and do like a?

• 2:57Rachel Cruze?

We do with the Ramses. Yeah.

• 2:59George Kamel?

  Wow.

• 3:00Rachel Cruze?

And talk about what we're grateful for.

• 3:01George Kamel?

  That's really nice.

• 3:02Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, that's like a Sharon tradition.

• 3:04George Kamel?

And we're headed to Boston for the holidays to be with my family. So that'll be nice.

• 3:09Rachel Cruze?

Boston's a great place to be Thanksgiving. It's very historical.

• 3:13George Kamel?

  It is.

• 3:14Rachel Cruze?

  Around that time.

• 3:14George Kamel?

That's how it's, it's been said. Boston is a very historical place. And it'll be a nice chilly New England fall vibe.

• 3:22Rachel Cruze?

  So good.

• 3:23George Kamel?

Another thing I'm grateful for, especially this year, is when people actually know how to give gifts that aren't a complete waste of money.

• 3:29Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, yes.

• 3:30George Kamel?

Sounds ungrateful, but I just, I'm tired of just stuff for the sake of stuff.

• 3:34Rachel Cruze?

  Yep.

• 3:35George Kamel?

If you're gonna do a gift, make it thoughtful, but also I don't want to have to read your mind. So we're gonna help these people today, everyone listening and watching.

• 3:42Rachel Cruze?

Because Black Friday is tomorrow and the shopping starts. If it's not already done, it's getting completed probably in the next week or two. And yeah, we're gonna help you out because gifts are fun. Are you a great gift giver? Is that like a strength in yours?

• 3:57George Kamel?

No, I'm great at if you tell me what you want, I will find you the best deal on that gift.

• 4:02Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, yeah, yeah.

• 4:02George Kamel?

  Under budget.

• 4:03Rachel Cruze?

  For sure.

• 4:04George Kamel?

So that is my spiritual gift. It's not the thing, it's getting the deal on the things that you don't get screwed.

• 4:09Rachel Cruze?

  What a gift that.

• 4:10George Kamel?

Which I think that is a gift.

• 4:11Rachel Cruze?

That's a gift that keeps on giving.

• 4:12George Kamel?

  Resourcefulness.

• 4:13Rachel Cruze?

You know, and I'm not a great gift giver either. And I wish I was, because people that are, and they get you that thing, they're like, well, you said this, you know, like, three months ago, and I just thought.

• 4:21George Kamel?

  Oh, one of those.

• 4:22Rachel Cruze?

And you're like, oh, my gosh.

• 4:23George Kamel?

You mentioned it in conversation, and I picked up on it.

• 4:26Rachel Cruze?

Yes. I wish I was better at that, but I'm not.

• 4:29George Kamel?

  Yeah.

• 4:29Rachel Cruze?

I'm not. What's like the best gift you've ever received?

• 4:32George Kamel?

Oh, my goodness, that's a big question. I think childhood comes to mind, because as an adult, there's less, I don't know, there's less excitement around opening a gift. It's like, cool, I could have bought this, but thank you for buying it.

• 4:42Rachel Cruze?

  Sure.

• 4:42George Kamel?

As a kid, the two best things I ever got were an electric guitar.

• 4:47Rachel Cruze?

  Uh, yep.

• 4:48George Kamel?

And a video camera. So I think it was like, 4th grade and 5th grade.

• 4:51Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, that's fun.

• 4:52George Kamel?

Those really like shaped who I am. You know what I mean? Like, I was a musician, and I started bands, and I was in film, and I wanted to go into film. I still love video.

• 5:01Rachel Cruze?

  Yep.

• 5:01George Kamel?

I'm on video today. So those are the most formative gifts that meant the most. And probably were not cheap. Like, I'm thinking back, I'm like, to buy a kid, back then, it was like, $700 for a video camera.

• 5:10Rachel Cruze?

  Sure.

• 5:11George Kamel?

And I was just like, I want it.

• 5:12Rachel Cruze?

  I want a video camera.

• 5:13George Kamel?

  Yeah. How about you?

• 5:15Rachel Cruze?

Uh, I remember getting a boombox.

• 5:17George Kamel?

  Yes.

• 5:18Rachel Cruze?

That was a big deal, because I had a CD player and a cassette tape, and it was like, all in one. And you could just pick it up with the handle, and I would carry it to the bathroom. Yeah, I had.

• 5:26George Kamel?

Were you recording songs from the radio onto the cassette?

• 5:28Rachel Cruze?

Oh, yeah, you did play and record at the same time. And it was great. Uh, we got a puppy for Christmas one year.

• 5:35George Kamel?

Oh, that's fun. When you were kids, or as adults?

• 5:37Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah, when we were kids.

• 5:39George Kamel?

That's fun. And it's come full circle.

• 5:40Rachel Cruze?

Came in the box, and all the things.

• 5:42George Kamel?

You have puppies at your home right now.

• 5:43Rachel Cruze?

I do, and actually, this week, they're going off to their homes. I know.

• 5:47George Kamel?

  How sweet.

• 5:47Rachel Cruze?

I know, we had six puppies, and they are now all across the country.

• 5:51George Kamel?

  Now, you're giving the gift.

• 5:52Rachel Cruze?

  Well, I am.

• 5:53George Kamel?

You're getting paid for it, but still, what a gift it is.

• 5:56Rachel Cruze?

  What a gift it is.

• 5:57George Kamel?

  To bring home a puppy.

• 5:58Rachel Cruze?

I know, yep. Um, okay, so, George, there's all these different types of gifts that we can give. And so, again, I think it's important to help all of you out there have gifts that, like, are practical, because when we're adults... You know, there's the sentimental gifts. Winston's a good gift giver. He'll do like jewelry, like I got another wedding band for last anniversary. Like, there's like sweet gifts that mean a lot. But there's also the practical gifts that can go a long way with people. And you have different people in your life that value different things, are interested in different things. And we're gonna be here for the people, George.

• 6:34George Kamel?

We're gonna curate the best gift list you've ever seen in your entire life.

• 6:38Rachel Cruze?

  All right.

• 6:39George Kamel?

  For free.

• 6:39Rachel Cruze?

And we each have our own under these lists.

• 6:41George Kamel?

And you can tell whose gift is who if we just told you what they are.

• 6:45Rachel Cruze?

Are you ready? We got the wine and cocktail lovers. So, there is a cocktail shaker, and I will give Courtney, the cheese gal, credit because I follow her. And there is a cocktail shaker.

• 6:59George Kamel?

  Yep.

• 7:00Rachel Cruze?

That does not freeze your hands. It's like a thermo- thermal.

• 7:06George Kamel?

  Got it.

• 7:07Rachel Cruze?

There's like a protective covering. Because we have a cocktail shaker. When you shake it so much with ice, you're like, your hands get, they're frozen.

• 7:13George Kamel?

Because it's just a straight up metal shaker.

• 7:15Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right, that's right.

• 7:16George Kamel?

  Or stainless steel.

• 7:16Rachel Cruze?

Yes, but this has like a protective covering over it, so your hands never get cold.

• 7:20George Kamel?

Do you know what type of shaker you have? Is it like the Boston shaker that has two pieces? That you sort of stick on top diagonally a little bit?

• 7:26Rachel Cruze?

  No, no, no.

• 7:27George Kamel?

Or is it that has a top and a lid and a strainer?

• 7:29Rachel Cruze?

Yep, but the top is also a measuring.

• 7:32George Kamel?

  Yes.

• 7:33Rachel Cruze?

Which is great, too. So, two in one. It's fantastic.

• 7:35George Kamel?

  Do you know the brand?

• 7:36Rachel Cruze?

  I'll link it down below.

• 7:37George Kamel?

Oh, that's right. We should tell the people. We're gonna link all of these.

• 7:40Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, we'll link all of it, so check it out.

• 7:41George Kamel?

So you don't have to just like scour the internet?

• 7:43Rachel Cruze?

It's a great one, if you have a wine or a cocktail.

• 7:44George Kamel?

This one, I think, is very thoughtful. And I've given this gift to cocktail lovers in my life. And that is a vintage cocktail book.

• 7:51Rachel Cruze?

  That's fun.

• 7:52George Kamel?

So you can go on eBay and search for like 1950s or vintage cocktail book, or a secondhand bookstore sometimes will have these. And there's something about like a classic vintage cocktail book and making a drink out of that that transports you. I think that's what a good drink does. And I think the old timey drinks are so cool.

• 8:10Rachel Cruze?

  Yes, like the speakeasy days.

• 8:12George Kamel?

Even like the fonts were cool. Everything was just like classy.

• 8:14Rachel Cruze?

I know. When you go back to like the, what, the 30s, 20s? It's so fun.

• 8:19George Kamel?

So that's a thoughtful gift. That's not your standard. I'm gonna go buy a cocktail book on Amazon.

• 8:22Rachel Cruze?

So good. All right, next is for the people who love to cook in your life. My favorite cooking utensil, and I use it probably twice a week. It is a meat grinder. It's actually, I think, a pampered chef, but I'm sure there's like an Amazon dupe. But the way it is, it's like a spatula, but it's up and it has these like grooves in it. But you you spin it in your ground beef and it makes the finest, like Taco Bell fine.

• 8:47George Kamel?

Whoa. So you're recreating Taco Bell meat at home?

• 8:50Rachel Cruze?

It's what we're going for, people.

• 8:51George Kamel?

  But with real meat?

• 8:52Rachel Cruze?

It is what we're going for with real meats.

• 8:54George Kamel?

  How cool is that?

• 8:54Rachel Cruze?

But it makes it really thin, because when I do spaghetti sauce, or tacos, or chili, or all that, I don't like chunky chunks of meat. Like, I'm not a meatball fan.

• 9:02George Kamel?

Oh, I didn't know that about you.

• 9:03Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, I don't need like a chunk of meat.

• 9:04George Kamel?

I gotta cancel the gift I got you.

• 9:07Rachel Cruze?

  I'm a meatball maker.

• 9:08George Kamel?

  She's a meatball maker.

• 9:10Rachel Cruze?

Yep, so this uh finally grounds your ground beef and it is fantastic, not expensive, it's wonderful.

• 9:16George Kamel?

Can I ask a dumb question?

• 9:17Rachel Cruze?

  Sure.

• 9:17George Kamel?

Why do you like burgers? Isn't that just a meatball that has been flattened?

• 9:22Rachel Cruze?

You know what? Uh, that is true, George, it's fair, but I actually like my burgers more thin. I don't like-

• 9:29George Kamel?

  Like a smash patty?

• 9:29Rachel Cruze?

Yes, smash burgers, all day. I don't like, like mom and dad, when they cook burgers at their house, it's like really thick and I don't like that. I don't like the like, it's like a ball of meat-

• 9:42George Kamel?

  Wow.

• 9:43Rachel Cruze?

On a burger and it just, it doesn't work. So you gotta put your thumb in, I've learned that trick, you know, it kind of spreads it out.

• 9:49George Kamel?

So it's not too high on the top and around it?

• 9:50Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, David and Sharon's high, it's just like a, it's like a ball.

• 9:54George Kamel?

Well, hey, David and Sharon, if you're listening, I just wanna say, I'll be happy to show up and eat your delicious burger instead of Rachel, who's ungrateful.

• 10:01Rachel Cruze?

I know. So no, I don't like it. Like, I don't like when it's thick like that. It's not good. So it's thin.

• 10:07George Kamel?

  All right.

• 10:07Rachel Cruze?

Thin, thin. So maybe I like McDonald's, just thin.

• 10:10George Kamel?

Thin, low quality, that's what Rachel's here for.

• 10:12Rachel Cruze?

  That's what I'm here for.

• 10:13George Kamel?

Wispy. My gift for people who love to cook, a high-quality citrus squeezer. Underrated.

• 10:20Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, good one.

• 10:21George Kamel?

Because most people have these dinky citrus squeezers they've had forever, and I got one, I believe it was on Amazon. It has like a metal extra piece and you get 20% extra juice.

• 10:31Rachel Cruze?

  Wow.

• 10:31George Kamel?

And so I like to get the most out of my citrus.

• 10:34Rachel Cruze?

  Hundred percent.

• 10:34George Kamel?

So this is a great gift. If you're still squeezing limes with your like arthritis-ridden hands, it's time to upgrade.

• 10:41Rachel Cruze?

Okay, where do you get yours? Is it like on Amazon?

• 10:43George Kamel?

  Yeah, mine was from Amazon.

• 10:44Rachel Cruze?

  Okay.

• 10:44George Kamel?

But I remember the the selling point was up to 20% more juice and I was like, you had me.

• 10:49Rachel Cruze?

You got me. Got me on that investment.

• 10:51George Kamel?

And most people, they don't have a good one, and that's what makes it a great gift.

• 10:54Rachel Cruze?

Yes, that's fair. That's fair. All right, next is for the tech and gadget lovers out there. One of my favorite things, George, is a wireless phone charger.

• 11:03George Kamel?

Oh, where do you just put it on the back of the phone?

• 11:05Rachel Cruze?

Yep, I have it on my nightstand. Now, I will say, there may be a total-

• 11:08George Kamel?

There's still a wire involved, but it's not connected to your phone.

• 11:11Rachel Cruze?

Not connected to your phone. You just lay it on top, but you gotta wait for the green to light up because there have maybe like 10 times where you think it's charging and it's not. And that's a bummer. So you do have to like watch for it.

• 11:21George Kamel?

My beef with those is you can't have a phone case that is blocking the back.

• 11:26Rachel Cruze?

  I have a phone case.

• 11:27George Kamel?

What does yours look like? But that's not blocking. Like if you have a wallet on the back or something like that.

• 11:30Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 11:31George Kamel?

  Yeah, yours is clean.

• 11:32Rachel Cruze?

Yep. You just set it right there and it, yeah.

• 11:35George Kamel?

  Wow.

• 11:36Rachel Cruze?

  It's so great. So great.

• 11:37George Kamel?

My gift is tied to that for the tech lovers out there, and that's an extended phone charger. So we're talking like a six footer.

• 11:44Rachel Cruze?

  Now, that is nice.

• 11:45George Kamel?

You can get these cheap on Amazon. You can get a pack of them. They even have like a 12, if you really need a long, if this is going around a couch or something, you can get them even longer. But I think it's, we live in a world where why are you reaching over?

• 11:57Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, I know. It's fair. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 11:58George Kamel?

Life's too short to be rocking the like three foot iPhone cable.

• 12:02Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, we don't need to do that.

• 12:03George Kamel?

I went home, I saw my dad's iPhone cable. All of the metal was showing from inside the wa-

• 12:07Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, no!

• 12:09George Kamel?

  Yeah.

• 12:09Rachel Cruze?

  Upgrade, Mr. Campbell.

• 12:10George Kamel?

Like the rubber was like all coming off and I went, dude, you need, you need a better cable. So at that Christmas, I got them upgraded iPhone cables.

• 12:17Rachel Cruze?

  That's a great gift.

• 12:18George Kamel?

It's one of those things where you're just like, I'm not gonna go get new iPhone cables. It's working, it's fine. I'm like, why are you risking getting electrocuted over this?

• 12:24Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, life is too short. That's good. I like that one, George. All right, next is for your kids. Okay, so this was a gift. Both of my girls got it different times and they, they just love it so much. It's so funny to me. And it's so cheap. Like you can get a really cheap one on Amazon. But it's a kid digital camera.

• 12:43George Kamel?

  How does that work?

• 12:44Rachel Cruze?

It's just like this like little cheap digital camera and it's terrible quality. I mean, like you could barely see it, but it has like a unicorn case on it. I mean, it's just like this cheap little thing. But they wear it around their neck and they'll like literally wear it out.

• 12:57George Kamel?

  They're langered.

• 12:58Rachel Cruze?

And like, they think it's so cool to take pictures and like have a screen. Probably because they don't have like phones and stuff. But they just, they loved it. And it's like 20 bucks. But yeah, so if you have like an older kid-

• 13:10George Kamel?

How do you get the photos? Forgive my ignorance.

• 13:13Rachel Cruze?

I don't even think you do. I mean, I think it's just the fact they-

• 13:15George Kamel?

They don't know, they don't get to see the photos?

• 13:17Rachel Cruze?

  I'm sure there's a card. I'm sure there's some like, um-

• 13:20George Kamel?

  An SD card?

• 13:21Rachel Cruze?

SD, US, I was gonna say USPS card?

• 13:23George Kamel?

  Nope, not a USPS.

• 13:26Rachel Cruze?

Whatever that card is in there, I'm sure you can take it out. But they don't even want the pictures. It's just the idea that they get to like, have this instant gratification of their own, like, "Oh, I get to take a picture and it shows up on the..."

• 13:36George Kamel?

They got to be artists and creative and have some fun.

• 13:38Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And they think it's like, so fun.

• 13:40George Kamel?

  I like that one.

• 13:40Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 13:41George Kamel?

  Okay.

• 13:42Rachel Cruze?

  It's cheap, but...

• 13:43George Kamel?

  Yeah.

• 13:44Rachel Cruze?

  It's fun.

• 13:44George Kamel?

I go with a timeless gift for kids. And I...

• 13:47Rachel Cruze?

  Blocks, wooden blocks?

• 13:48George Kamel?

This depends on age. This is not for a two-year-old, but as they get older, there's something about a crisp $20 bill. That just you protect it.

• 13:55Rachel Cruze?

  You're giving cash?

• 13:56George Kamel?

  Yes.

• 13:57Rachel Cruze?

George, let's get a little bit more creative for that.

• 13:59George Kamel?

And as they get older, can I tell you? One of my uncles would always give me a $50 bill. And it's so rare, even back then, that I would see a $50 bill. So it was like, life-changing to me. Both the amount of money and just seeing the bill. I protected that thing with all my life.

• 14:13Rachel Cruze?

  Where is it now?

• 14:13George Kamel?

And that's the most memorable, I spent it.

• 14:15Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah, bet you did.

• 14:16George Kamel?

Probably on a Game Boy or something, back then.

• 14:19Rachel Cruze?

  Totally.

• 14:19George Kamel?

But, you know, you can do this in different ways. Or you can put it in the piggy bank, or the college fund, or whatever. But I like this one.

• 14:25Rachel Cruze?

Alright, well, speaking of just cash and money for teens. You know, the big thing is gas gift cards.

• 14:32George Kamel?

So as we get to driving age?

• 14:34Rachel Cruze?

Yep, and so that's what I've heard from a lot of people.

• 14:37George Kamel?

Because no one wants to spend money on gas. So it's a nice blessing to be like, "Hey, I don't have to think about it. It's not coming out of my bank account." That's a good one.

• 14:43Rachel Cruze?

  That's right, that's right.

• 14:44George Kamel?

And, I mean, gift cards are a great one for teens. Because you know, that's really what they want. Amazon, Target, wherever their favorite store is. Starbucks, I don't know where they get coffee these days. These kids out here.

• 14:54Rachel Cruze?

  These kids out here.

• 14:55George Kamel?

  Getting their mocha lattes.

• 14:56Rachel Cruze?

Alright, parents and grandparents. You know what's a good one is a Thero gun. Thero gun?

• 15:02George Kamel?

  Thera gun.

• 15:03Rachel Cruze?

  Thera gun.

• 15:04George Kamel?

  The massage gun that's like...

• 15:06Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 15:08George Kamel?

Yeah, I've got one of those. I never use it, but I need to, because I pulled a muscle in my shoulder sleeping last night.

• 15:14Rachel Cruze?

They're great, and my parents love them. So like, it's a good, it's a good grandparent gift.

• 15:18George Kamel?

Yeah, and you could, there's a range of, you know, budgetary options here. You can get the cheaper one on Amazon, you can spring for the nicer one.

• 15:26Rachel Cruze?

Anything from, from Brookstone. Remember Brookstone, that store?

• 15:29George Kamel?

  Yep.

• 15:30Rachel Cruze?

A massage chair. Has anyone, did you know anyone that owns one of those actual massage chairs like in their house?

• 15:35George Kamel?

No, I was at someone's house once. It was like a friend of a relative and they had like a, like one of those $4,000 massage chairs.

• 15:41Rachel Cruze?

  Really nice ones.

• 15:42George Kamel?

And I was like, I get it. This is luxury. What we did get from my mom is like the foot, you put your feet in it, like you can have water and it's almost a foot massager type thing.

• 15:51Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 15:51George Kamel?

So she appreciated that. That was a good one. The new one is the neck fans, the like the cooling neck fan thing. Have you seen people wear these?

• 15:58Rachel Cruze?

Yes, they were a lot at sport. Oh, Kelly's a fan.

• 16:00George Kamel?

  Yeah.

• 16:01Rachel Cruze?

  You love it.

• 16:02George Kamel?

You've seen them at Disney World and the summertime at the games and all that. Do they work?

• 16:05Speaker 02

  They really do. Yeah.

• 16:07Rachel Cruze?

It keeps you cool. It just kind of like.

• 16:08Speaker 02

I wasn't sold on it. It's like, this is kind of cheesy. But it was when it was so hot over 4th of July weekend and we were doing the whole firework thing and man, love it.

• 16:16George Kamel?

Wow. I want to try it, but truthfully, they just look dorky. And I'm not like, it's not like I'm too cool for it. I just, I feel like I just get made fun of if I wore one.

• 16:25Rachel Cruze?

There was a certain look when you wear a neck fan.

• 16:27George Kamel?

If I wore one into the office, I'd never hear the end of it.

• 16:30Rachel Cruze?

No, you wouldn't. You gotta do it at outdoor events, George.

• 16:33George Kamel?

  Thank you.

• 16:34Rachel Cruze?

You shouldn't go to many of those, but it's good. Alright, so when you are married, your spouse, you guys do Christmas gifts?

• 16:40George Kamel?

We decided, I think, pretty soon into our marriage that we were not going to get Christmas gifts for each other. It was already a stressful time, a lot going on, so we decided to just say no to that.

• 16:51Rachel Cruze?

Same here. Yeah, we don't do, yeah, we don't do Christmas gifts either.

• 16:54George Kamel?

What do you get gifts for each other? Like what are the occasions? Anniversary, is it birthday?

• 16:58Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, anniversary, we'll do stuff. Birthday, every now and then, but we're not, neither of us are like really big gift people. Yeah.

• 17:06George Kamel?

We stopped anniversary too, for the most part. We decided we'd rather have an experience together, like a really nice meal versus like I bought her a thing or jewelry.

• 17:14Rachel Cruze?

  Totally.

• 17:14George Kamel?

And so birthdays are the only one that we really go, I want to get her something fun and sweet.

• 17:19Rachel Cruze?

I did get Winston early on. Gosh, I think this was before kids. Uh Gavin de Grau tickets.

• 17:27George Kamel?

Wow, is that his favorite artist?

• 17:29Rachel Cruze?

He does love Gavin, the piano part of Gavin.

• 17:32George Kamel?

  He's very talented.

• 17:32Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 17:33George Kamel?

What is the other part of Gavin?

• 17:35Rachel Cruze?

  I don't know.

• 17:36George Kamel?

He likes the piano and he smashes the ivories there.

• 17:39Rachel Cruze?

And it was, and it is fun when you know there's something that they would love and you surprise them with it. It's like, that's a fun, that's a fun gesture for sure. So the surprise element is still fun.

• 17:50George Kamel?

And I feel like the, we're leaning toward experiences more than stuff these days. So a concert for an artist they love, that's a good one.

• 17:56Rachel Cruze?

But you can get creative. I mean, and the experiences, you know, you can do like a pickleball lesson or a pasta making class.

• 18:01George Kamel?

Or a cocktail making class, that's a new one.

• 18:03Rachel Cruze?

That would be fun, yes, but to do something together, I think is always exciting.

• 18:07George Kamel?

In like subscription boxes, like a coffee subscription where they get a new local bag or whatever every month.

• 18:13Rachel Cruze?

Your level of connection actually does go up when you have a shared experience together. Dr. Wes Parrott, when we used to do money and marriage together, he would talk about that, that studies show from like even, you know, brain activity. When you're doing something with someone, that's why on The Bachelor, you know, that show?

• 18:29George Kamel?

  They always do something wild.

• 18:31Rachel Cruze?

They do crazy, they have like bungee jumping.

• 18:32George Kamel?

  There it is.

• 18:33Rachel Cruze?

Yes, did you say that too?

• 18:34George Kamel?

  Yeah.

• 18:35Rachel Cruze?

  Jinx.

• 18:36George Kamel?

  You want me a Coke?

• 18:36Rachel Cruze?

You want me a Coke? Uh, but they do this like crazy shared experience together and it bonds them.

• 18:41George Kamel?

What's the craziest thing, like experience you and Winston have done that you feel like was bonding?

• 18:46Rachel Cruze?

Oh, that's a great question. We've like heights, I'm trying to think if we've done like a, like a really high thing, like the heights thing is always like a, ooh.

• 18:55George Kamel?

Oh, you're both a little leery of heights.

• 18:59Rachel Cruze?

Don't care for the heights. Geez, George, I'm not sure.

• 19:01George Kamel?

You guys, well, I can think of one for you. You guys went to Seattle to see Taylor Swift.

• 19:06Rachel Cruze?

  Oh yeah, that's scary though.

• 19:08George Kamel?

No, but I feel like that's a bonding experience.

• 19:10Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, totally.

• 19:10George Kamel?

Winston wearing the T-Swift, he enjoyed it more than you did secretly.

• 19:14Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, he was, uh, he was, he was confused half the time of like, what is happening around here? But it was so fun.

• 19:20George Kamel?

Fans are the confusing, you're like, what, they're on something.

• 19:23Rachel Cruze?

It's like a whole other experience.

• 19:24George Kamel?

  Spiritual experience for them.

• 19:25Rachel Cruze?

Oh, for sure, for sure. So much, so, so much. All right, the next one, which I think is always a fun one, is like the white elephant gift.

• 19:34George Kamel?

  Oh, I love these.

• 19:35Rachel Cruze?

This is just like the random, kind of like, less expensive, what's the thing that you love?

• 19:40George Kamel?

If I could do this for all Christmases, for all families, I would. I think it would just relieve the pressure. Everyone would be under budget, because we're not all, everyone buying a gift for every single person. And what do you want? Well, hers is $200. I'm tired of that.

• 19:54Rachel Cruze?

  For sure.

• 19:54George Kamel?

I love the idea of the, the white elephant, Dirty Santa gift swap.

• 19:57Rachel Cruze?

So fun. Okay, so what I would buy is a milk frother.

• 20:01George Kamel?

  Oh, that's a good one. It's about 10 bucks.

• 20:03Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, my kids use it to like make chocolate milk. Like they'll like put chocolate syrup in milk and they'll do that. Winston uses it for like milk, for coffee and all of that. It's, it's just a great little gadget to have.

• 20:13George Kamel?

I use it all the time and I use it for, my new thing is instant coffee.

• 20:17Rachel Cruze?

  Wait, Keurig?

• 20:18George Kamel?

No. Trader Joe's has an instant coffee, so it's ground coffee. It's instant. All you do is mix it with water or milk, and I used a little frother, and it foams up really nicely.

• 20:29Rachel Cruze?

George, I feel like that's like below you.

• 20:31George Kamel?

I thought so too, but I found a recipe that makes it bougie, where you add some brown sugar in there. With instant coffee and it becomes this very decadent experience.

• 20:42Rachel Cruze?

  Oh my gosh.

• 20:42George Kamel?

  I know.

• 20:43Rachel Cruze?

  I love it.

• 20:44George Kamel?

So there you go, a frother. My white elephant go-to, this is gonna sound unlike me, scratch tickets. I don't recommend people play the lottery, but I think for like a fun gift that we all do together.

• 20:55Rachel Cruze?

Just like a stack of them and just see if you make some?

• 20:57George Kamel?

Yeah, I did it for the cousins one year, because we were all like grown adults, buying each other gift cards for the same amounts. And I was like, this isn't fun. So I bought the crossword one, that's like $5.

• 21:05Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 21:06George Kamel?

And it takes like 20 minutes to cross off every single letter and see if you got any words.

• 21:11Rachel Cruze?

  Did people get some?

• 21:11George Kamel?

And some people won like 20 bucks off a $5 crossword, so you never know.

• 21:15Rachel Cruze?

That's fun. It's kind of a little game element to it.

• 21:17George Kamel?

Exactly, there's some competition there. So that's a fun one that maybe you don't, you didn't think of, Ramsey, when you thought, scratch tickets.

• 21:24Rachel Cruze?

No, you did not, no, I did not. All right. I love the take a hint kinda gift.

• 21:29George Kamel?

  What's that mean?

• 21:30Rachel Cruze?

It's like when people like give you like a vacuum cleaner. Like, hey, you probably need to let her.

• 21:34George Kamel?

  Your house is disgusting.

• 21:35Rachel Cruze?

Or like, I don't know, whatever it is, some extra sponges, cuz yours are gross. Like, whatever the thing is, it's like, here's like a little.

• 21:43Rachel Cruze?

So, there's a couple of those. I mean, like, the Total Money Makeover book could be that.

• 21:47George Kamel?

  Oh.

• 21:48Rachel Cruze?

And the great thing is, George, the Total Money Makeover book is one of our Black Friday sales here at Ramsey Solutions. And actually, all the books are. Your books, my books. So, go to ramseysolutions.com, make sure to check it out, because we have some great deals this Christmas on all of our products. So, they actually make really great gifts. It's not just a hint of like, hey, you should do better with your money, but it actually will help people.

• 22:11George Kamel?

And you can pair it with a little $20 bill in chapter one. That's a little surprise. Maybe it's sticking out. You do you.

• 22:18Rachel Cruze?

  That's good. That's good.

• 22:19George Kamel?

I've got one that's practical for people who lose everything that you love, and that's an Apple AirTag or any of these tags that track things.

• 22:27Rachel Cruze?

  That's good.

• 22:27George Kamel?

Track your kids, track your phones, track your keys. I've got it everywhere.

• 22:31Rachel Cruze?

  Yep.

• 22:31George Kamel?

  So, I think that's a great one.

• 22:33Rachel Cruze?

We put that in our suitcases sometimes.

• 22:34George Kamel?

Here's a take the hint gift. Bought someone a fridge.

• 22:39Rachel Cruze?

  What?

• 22:39George Kamel?

Because when we'd go, we'd go hang out, and there would be a cooler that stored everything, and it was kind of a nightmare.

• 22:45Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, gosh, yeah.

• 22:46George Kamel?

To just store everything in this cooler in the garage. So, we're like, let's just go in and get a fridge, so that whenever we're over there.

• 22:52Rachel Cruze?

  Wow, what a gift.

• 22:53George Kamel?

We can store our crispy boys. You know I love a little sparkling water.

• 22:55Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah, and people.

• 22:57George Kamel?

  I need a cold.

• 22:57Rachel Cruze?

  I'm sure everyone appreciated that.

• 22:58George Kamel?

Have you realized that you cannot drink room temperature sparkling water?

• 23:02Rachel Cruze?

See, I actually kinda like it.

• 23:06Rachel Cruze?

When my Topo Chicos go kind of like just room temperature, does not bother me.

• 23:11George Kamel?

  Why?

• 23:11Rachel Cruze?

I don't know, it kinda like heats everything up when it goes down. It's kinda nice.

• 23:15George Kamel?

You need help. I'm gonna get you a BetterHelp subscription.

• 23:17Rachel Cruze?

  Kinda nice.

• 23:19George Kamel?

  That's a good one.

• 23:19Rachel Cruze?

All right, here's for some gifts for the person that has it all. Is you gotta go sentimental. You gotta, you gotta go like the picture route, the homemade calendar.

• 23:29George Kamel?

So this is like a Dave Ramsey. That's who I think of, like the person who has it all.

• 23:32Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 23:33George Kamel?

What am I gonna buy Dave Ramsey?

• 23:34Rachel Cruze?

Handprints from all the grandkids. I got my parents for their lake house, a, a yard, like a sign in the yard and it had these like wooden arrows pointing different ways. And one said like Mimi's Kitchen and it points inside the house. Papa Dave's Dock. It goes that way, the dog park, because they have this big dog area.

• 23:49George Kamel?

And it's customized for their life.

• 23:51Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I got it off Etsy and I was like, that's a great gift.

• 23:53George Kamel?

  That's a good one.

• 23:54Rachel Cruze?

That they can, yeah, put the yard at the lake.

• 23:56George Kamel?

  So personalized.

• 23:57Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 23:57George Kamel?

Like getting the socks with a picture of their dog on it.

• 23:59Rachel Cruze?

  It was so funny.

• 24:00George Kamel?

Or their kids on it. That's a fun one.

• 24:02Rachel Cruze?

  That's a good one.

• 24:02George Kamel?

Uh, handwritten notes, homemade artwork, a book about something that they're interested in, a photo session with the family, something that's a little more heartfelt and personal.

• 24:12Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 24:13George Kamel?

Or an experience. If you know they're, they're into art, let's get them a membership to the art gallery in town or the museum or a spa visit.

• 24:20Rachel Cruze?

  Uh huh.

• 24:21George Kamel?

  That's a good one, guys.

• 24:23Rachel Cruze?

  I don't think that's very sentimental, though.

• 24:24George Kamel?

Well, it's thoughtful for someone who could use a de-stressor.

• 24:28Rachel Cruze?

  Maybe so.

• 24:28George Kamel?

  Moms.

• 24:29Rachel Cruze?

Moms, all the moms out there.

• 24:31George Kamel?

I think Whitney would take a, a spa gift card. So those are some really thoughtful gifts that I don't think are a waste of money and people will actually appreciate them and not return them. We've all been there.

• 24:41Rachel Cruze?

Hope we helped you guys out with your list.

• 24:43George Kamel?

And I think gift giving expectations around the holidays, it can easily get out of hand. And the last thing you want is to kick off the new year financially behind, resentful, in debt. So please, don't do that.

• 24:55Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, and I think like, ask, why are we doing this, right? If you're all adults buying adults gifts in the family, like, just ask.

• 25:01George Kamel?

  Have a hard conversation.

• 25:02Rachel Cruze?

Do we like really need to be doing this, right? Or, um, if there was a certain dollar amount that was always spent, like, question why? Or is your motivation so people, you know, could see all of this and how fun it is? Like, like, just again, the motivation and, and challenging what used to be the norm, I think is really good.

• 25:20George Kamel?

And setting the boundaries. And today's a good day to set them. Don't wait until Christmas to then get resentful.

• 25:25Rachel Cruze?

Some people like genuinely were like, I hope someone else speaks up, right? And you could be the hero.

• 25:30George Kamel?

Just say, hey, can we limit the gifts, uh, no, no gifts over $50? Or whatever the limit is. Or we're gonna draw names and you're each gonna get one person.

• 25:37Rachel Cruze?

  So much better.

• 25:38George Kamel?

And I love the question that you have people ask before they buy something.

• 25:42Rachel Cruze?

Oh, that if nobody sees this purchase, do I still want it?

• 25:45George Kamel?

  There it is.

• 25:46Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 25:47George Kamel?

  That's a good one.

• 25:48Rachel Cruze?

  That's a true for, yeah.

• 25:48George Kamel?

Because honestly, a lot of the times around the holidays, I'll buy things for myself.

• 25:52Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 25:52George Kamel?

There's a piece of me that's like, well, it's a really good deal. I might as well stock up. So there's a piece that we got to also look in the mirror.

• 25:58Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 25:58George Kamel?

  And stay under control.

• 26:00Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, don't shop for yourself. This is the season to give.

• 26:03George Kamel?

Yeah, and that's where the budget comes in handy. And I love, I'll make a little budget separately for Christmas and go, all right, here's what we're going to spend on each person, and I'm going to make sure we stay under that budget.

• 26:12Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 26:12George Kamel?

And EveryDollar is a great way to do that. This is our budgeting app. You can set all of your line items for each person. You can have one line item for all of Christmas.

• 26:19Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, I do have a Christmas one, and then I go into my Notes app and have everyone's in there and drag and drop all the transactions into that one. Or if you want to be even, want to be more detailed, list everybody out in EveryDollar for December.

• 26:31George Kamel?

  Yeah.

• 26:32Rachel Cruze?

And you can have it all there, or November if you're shopping.

• 26:34George Kamel?

And that's what I love about EveryDollar is you just, you can duplicate November, and then you can make tweaks to December, add all the people, and then in January, delete those categories.

• 26:41Rachel Cruze?

  And then you're done.

• 26:42George Kamel?

And you've moved on without debt. So please don't go into debt for any gifts for anyone for any reason. Not worth it.

• 26:48Rachel Cruze?

We'll put a link down below so you can check out EveryDollar if you haven't already.

• 26:57Rachel Cruze?

Well, all right, George, it's almost the end of the episode, and we close out every episode with

• 27:01George Kamel?

  Guilty as charged.

• 27:03Rachel Cruze?

And this is where our producer Kelly gives us a new guilty as charged question every week, and if we're guilty, we take a sip. Kelly?

• 27:10Speaker 02

All right. Have you ever been given a gift by someone, and you didn't have one for them, so you lied about not having it by saying like, oh, I left your gift at home, or that kind of thing, so that you don't feel bad?

• 27:27George Kamel?

  100%.

• 27:27Rachel Cruze?

  I've done that.

• 27:28George Kamel?

This happens with friends that I realize are gift givers, and I'm not. And then I realize, oh, like, I have to reciprocate. This can't be a one-way street. So there's been, I have

• 27:40Rachel Cruze?

Do you always reciprocate? Because I have learned throughout the years, I'll just receive and just say thank you and not feel the pressure. But I feel like I used to feel, and I would write their name down, like, I have to buy them something.

• 27:49George Kamel?

Well, how random are these people? That's the question.

• 27:52Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, some of them, I think a couple have been like, oh, my gosh.

• 27:55George Kamel?

  It's a loose relationship.

• 27:57Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, I wasn't expecting a gift from this person.

• 27:59George Kamel?

Yeah. Well, do you give, like, do you give and receive gifts from friends around Christmas?

• 28:04Rachel Cruze?

Uh, no, not a ton. We've kind of stopped doing that. I feel like we did that more when we were younger. Um, that's kind of stopped more. But I'll feel like I'll randomly get a gift. And I'm like, oh crap.

• 28:18George Kamel?

  I gotta get him something.

• 28:19Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 28:20George Kamel?

Yeah, no, I've been there. There's, I can think of two friends in particular who are really good friends.

• 28:24Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 28:24George Kamel?

But I didn't know we were at like at.

• 28:26Rachel Cruze?

We're not like giving gifts for Christmas kind of friends.

• 28:28George Kamel?

  Yeah.

• 28:28Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah, totally.

• 28:29George Kamel?

And as a child, my parents would give gifts to my best friend's parents.

• 28:33Rachel Cruze?

  Oh.

• 28:34George Kamel?

And they kept doing this and so they would give us a gift, so we would give them a gift. So next year they would give us a gift and then we would have to give them a gift. Even long after me and this guy were friends.

• 28:43Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, stop it.

• 28:44George Kamel?

It had been here since I'd even seen the guy and they finally just, hey, we're gonna, we're not doing this anymore. They're like, okay, good, thank you.

• 28:51Rachel Cruze?

  Thank you, thank you.

• 28:52George Kamel?

Someone has to break the chain. It's like a pay it forward.

• 28:55Rachel Cruze?

Yes, just to say we gotta stop it, even though it's been a tradition. We don't need it.

• 28:58George Kamel?

You know what this has me thinking, Rachel, this guilty as charged question? If I got you a gift, would you then lie and be like, oh my gosh, I'm get, yeah.

• 29:08Rachel Cruze?

Oh, you'd be a good, yes, George. This is a good relationship where that could happen.

• 29:12George Kamel?

Cause I feel like you would be like, oh, that's so nice. You didn't have to, I didn't get you anything.

• 29:18Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, maybe I would, maybe I would. No, no, yeah, you're right, you're right, you're right.

• 29:20George Kamel?

Cause you can't hurt my feelings. You don't have that power over me.

• 29:23Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, if Michael Reddish got me a gift.

• 29:26George Kamel?

  Yes.

• 29:26Rachel Cruze?

  Mixologist, Michael Reddish.

• 29:27George Kamel?

If you don't know, Michael is one of the best gift givers I've ever met. So you cannot top his gift.

• 29:33Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, that would be tough.

• 29:34George Kamel?

He is very difficult. I usually do group gifts for Michael because you have to go big and make it very thoughtful and personal.

• 29:40Rachel Cruze?

Oh, he's a high maintenance gift receiver.

• 29:42George Kamel?

He's just, it's gotta be something like with some weight behind it.

• 29:46Rachel Cruze?

  Crazy, yes.

• 29:46George Kamel?

It can't just be like a gadget I got on Amazon.

• 29:48Rachel Cruze?

Somebody that I would be like, oh shoot, your gift's coming. I may say that to you, George.

• 29:54George Kamel?

  Wow.

• 29:55Rachel Cruze?

I know, would you be honest with me or would you feel like?

• 29:57George Kamel?

If you got me a gift, would I feel like I have to get you one? No, but I would go, oh, you know what? I should get the cruises a gift. That'd be a night, you know, I got Dave and Sharon a gift one year. I don't remember why.

• 30:07Rachel Cruze?

  What?

• 30:07George Kamel?

But I got Sharon, mostly for Sharon. It was a bourbon maple syrup from Trader Joe's. Like a bourbon aged, barrel aged maple syrup.

• 30:19Rachel Cruze?

Look at you, just a gift giver.

• 30:20George Kamel?

And I think she enjoyed it. There's probably something else in there.

• 30:22Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, so kind. All right, who finished their drink first?

• 30:25George Kamel?

I think we're about equal on this, but it was a really good one. This was a mocktail, and it's a red sans gria. Very clever, whoever came up with that.

• 30:35Rachel Cruze?

  Good name, good name.

• 30:36George Kamel?

And it's a dollar fifty-six cents per glass. It's got a few things in it, but I think it's a great one to try. Pomegranate juice, grape juice, tart cherry juice, coconut water, orange juice, lime juice. And then, of course, with sans gria, you want to put some fruits in there. So you can slice up a whole lemon, slice up a whole lime, slice up an orange, slice up an apple, and throw it all in there.

• 30:55Rachel Cruze?

  Get it all there.

• 30:56George Kamel?

It's a great batch recipe to make for the holidays.

• 30:58Rachel Cruze?

Yes, that would be a good one.

• 30:59George Kamel?

So I'm gonna give this one a 10 out of 10.

• 31:01Rachel Cruze?

Wow, I'm going 8 out of 10. It was a little tart.

• 31:04George Kamel?

  I like tart.

• 31:05Rachel Cruze?

  Yep.

• 31:06George Kamel?

Look at that pomegranate juice. I'm a huge fan of pomegranate.

• 31:08Rachel Cruze?

  Love it, you'll love it.
