Zooey Deschanel Returns

Zooey Deschanel (Merv, New Girl, She & Him) is an actress and musician. Zooey returns to the Armchair Expert to discuss the lessons of the go-bag after the fire evacuations, the elegance-centered branding of cats, and the touching surprise that fans often comfort-rewatch New Girl. Zooey and Dax talk about having a partner who's a consummate tinkerer, growing up in a family of ADHD interrupters, and the embarrassing moments running through her head at all times. Zooey explains being a broken-up couple with a depressed mutt in her new movie Merv, her kids only recent interest in watching her in Elf, and a beautiful, special Armchair rendition of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. • 0:23Speaker 01

  Murph.

• 0:23Dax Shepard?

And I promise you, right now, this, this movie's getting watched by my family, who are all dog lovers.

• 0:28Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 0:29Dax Shepard?

Adorable story about a couple that's broken up and the dog is so depressed.

• 0:33Speaker 01

  Oh, sorry, dog.

• 0:35Dax Shepard?

Sorry, Murph. Uh, please enjoy Zooey Deschanel.

• 0:39Speaker 01

Well, there's a special surprise in this episode. We get something very special from Zooey that we kind of forced to happen.

• 0:48Dax Shepard?

She came very generous. She was in the holiday spirit.

• 0:51Speaker 01

That's right. So enjoy, enjoy the little special.

• 1:32Speaker 01

I have to say, I am so ready for fall. I want sweaters. I've been craving a true crisp morning where I actually need a jacket. I can't wait.

• 1:41Dax Shepard?

I'm fully there. The second it dips below 70, I'm like, this is my season. Give me the layers, give me the boots, give me a reason to wear something other than a t-shirt. And honestly, that's why I love Quince, because fall is when your wardrobe actually has to show up. And everything at Quince is 50 to 80% less than similar brands. We're talking 100% Mongolian cashmere sweaters, starting at $60.

• 2:03Speaker 01

$60. $60 for cashmere that you'd expect from a luxury brand without the luxury price tag. It's amazing. Gets me. Every time. It really shouldn't be real, but it is because they go straight to the factories. They skip the middlemen and they just hand you the savings. The stuff isn't trendy. It's the kind of pieces you grab over and over because they work every time.

• 2:21Dax Shepard?

The 100% Mongolian cashmere sweaters for me are it. When I look at Steve McQueen, this man owned a couple of sweaters he wore all the time and he looks iconic.

• 2:30Speaker 01

  It's a uniform.

• 2:32Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 2:32Speaker 01

And Quince isn't just about the clothes. They have hotel quality bedding, cookware, bath essentials, thoughtfully designed furniture. You can really go there and outfit your entire apartment or house. So if you're in need of any kind of fall refresh at home too, same quality, same attention to detail for every corner of your life.

• 3:26Speaker 01

These are my favorite cups. Amber.

• 3:28Dax Shepard?

  Are they the best?

• 3:29Speaker 01

  They're the best.

• 3:30Dax Shepard?

  They're not a sponsor.

• 3:31Speaker 01

I give it as gifts a lot.

• 3:33Dax Shepard?

It's a great gift. I want to ask what drinking out of an amber mug has done to your overall coffee intake. Cause it is addressed mine.

• 3:41Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's escalating. It's up.

• 3:43Dax Shepard?

First of all, these glasses are so cute.

• 3:44Speaker 01

They really are. I love them. You look so cute. You guys look so cute. Stop. Okay, wait. It makes me drink just the right amount, which is however many cups I have, which is a lot.

• 3:55Dax Shepard?

I have a lot too, but I used to drink two in the morning while I was doing my like journaling. But I realized that was mostly because I didn't like that it was getting cold.

• 4:02Speaker 01

Right. You drink it too fast.

• 4:04Dax Shepard?

I was drinking it fast to deal with the temperature loss. And this I leisurely sip and it has cut down my coffee in the morning in half.

• 4:12Speaker 01

You know what it actually probably has with me too. And then I get so disappointed when my coffee gets cold. Yeah, yeah, I know. And even I always ask for.

• 4:20Speaker 02

Extra hot at cafes so that the end of the drink, it's not disappointingly cold.

• 4:24Dax Shepard?

What do they normally respond to you with when you request that? Because it feels like a liability. With disdain.

• 4:30Speaker 02

  They were like.

• 4:30Dax Shepard?

Chef likes it at this time.

• 4:32Speaker 02

  Yeah, chef likes it, loop.

• 4:35Dax Shepard?

You didn't happen to ever see the documentary about the woman who famously, and when we were kids, the whole world knew that a woman burnt her legs with McDonald's coffee.

• 4:44Speaker 02

  That was huge, huge.

• 4:45Dax Shepard?

It was the biggest. And it was pitched to us in a certain way, too.

• 4:48Speaker 02

Like, oh, she was such a diva.

• 4:50Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 4:51Speaker 02

This diva wants hot coffee. And then they gave her hot coffee and she burned herself.

• 4:54Dax Shepard?

Yes, and it was the ultimate symbol of frivolous lawsuit.

• 4:57Speaker 02

  Right, right.

• 4:58Dax Shepard?

That's how it was pitched, though.

• 4:59Speaker 02

Yeah, that's how it was pitched.

• 5:00Dax Shepard?

There's an incredible documentary called Hot Coffee. It's about this woman. Zoe, her entire thighs had to have skin grafts.

• 5:08Speaker 01

  It was really too hot.

• 5:09Dax Shepard?

It was insane. It burned off all of her skin. And that year that she sued, mind you, she didn't sue for any money. She just wanted the skin graft paid for. It was like fifty grand or whatever. The settlement we all heard about was the jury going, no, no, we need to punish McDonald's at least one day of coffee sales. So they added up what they made in one day of coffee sales, gave it to her. Because they had had at that moment already a hundred and some complaints that year of similar.

• 5:36Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's too hot.

• 5:37Speaker 01

  Yeah, everyone's like, that bitch.

• 5:39Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 5:39Speaker 01

  You're that naggy bitch.

• 5:41Dax Shepard?

And she was just an old lady with no skin on her.

• 5:43Speaker 01

  Nice lady.

• 5:44Speaker 02

  Oh, that's so sad.

• 5:45Dax Shepard?

And she just wanted the graft paid for, Zoe. But she left a millionaire.

• 5:50Speaker 01

  Good job.

• 5:50Speaker 02

You know what? She got the money.

• 5:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that's what we want.

• 5:53Speaker 01

Great, worth it. Let's talk about the bread.

• 5:55Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 5:55Dax Shepard?

Yes, okay, so Mary Jo, this was my curiosity, because I re-listened to your episode today on a hike, which is going on four years ago.

• 6:02Speaker 02

Yeah, it was a little while.

• 6:03Dax Shepard?

But at that time, four years ago, Mary Jo was a huge fan.

• 6:07Speaker 02

She still is a freaking huge fan.

• 6:09Speaker 01

I'm so happy she still have her.

• 6:11Speaker 02

She's an armcherry through and through. Would she have baked you guys bread?

• 6:15Dax Shepard?

See, I don't know enough. Is she someone who hands out bread willy-nilly?

• 6:19Speaker 02

  No.

• 6:20Dax Shepard?

  She's not.

• 6:20Speaker 01

  Okay, I feel so.

• 6:22Speaker 02

No, if she loves you, she'll bake you bread.

• 6:24Dax Shepard?

  Oh, she will.

• 6:25Speaker 02

Not mean she loves you guys.

• 6:26Dax Shepard?

Yes, see, because she's long past the excited phase. Of letting people know she knows how to do it.

• 6:31Speaker 02

She'll tell me stuff she hears. She's like always.

• 6:34Dax Shepard?

Okay, but I mean in the bread baking world.

• 6:36Speaker 02

  Oh, the bread. Oh.

• 6:37Dax Shepard?

Like, like Kristen's still making a couple hundred loaves a day to hand out to people. Because it's still very impressive for people to receive a loaf from her. But that'll wear off.

• 6:45Speaker 02

  Right.

• 6:45Dax Shepard?

But so Mary Jo's down to like the real baker.

• 6:48Speaker 02

My mom, when I was growing up, just baked bread. That was what she ate. She likes to eat her own bread and she bakes it for herself to eat.

• 6:56Speaker 01

  Norish.

• 6:56Speaker 02

And so their house burned down last year, which was really sad. I was trying to make sure they were okay. I knew my mom needed her sourdough back up and running.

• 7:05Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 7:05Speaker 02

  And her starter.

• 7:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:07Speaker 02

And my dad needed a camera.

• 7:08Dax Shepard?

What kind of camera did dad need?

• 7:09Speaker 02

Well, he still needs like a Leica. That's what he, but we got him, you know, he has other stuff.

• 7:15Dax Shepard?

To remind people, your father's a very famous cinematographer.

• 7:18Speaker 02

  Yes, yeah.

• 7:18Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes, a claim.

• 7:19Speaker 02

  Yes, bravo.

• 7:21Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 7:22Speaker 02

But my mom, my kids call her JoJo, which is very cute. JoJo needed her sourdough. The starter has been around for like 40 years. My whole childhood, she was baking bread. She'd given it to some friends, so we got her sourdough.

• 7:34Speaker 01

  Her original starter.

• 7:36Speaker 02

And she got it back and she's been, you know, baking in their apartment.

• 7:40Dax Shepard?

Were they evacuated at your house?

• 7:42Speaker 02

They were. And then we were evacuated for a while, but then when they'd lost their house, they came and stayed with us for maybe like three weeks. They wanted their own place, though.

• 7:51Dax Shepard?

  They were done.

• 7:52Speaker 02

No, we have a nice guest house, but I think they think they're imposing.

• 7:56Dax Shepard?

  Oh, that's what it is.

• 7:57Speaker 02

And so they just get nervous about we're imposing.

• 7:59Speaker 01

Yeah, we need to give them their space.

• 8:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:02Speaker 01

That's so sad. I'm so sorry.

• 8:04Dax Shepard?

  The childhood house?

• 8:06Speaker 02

  It was like so sad.

• 8:08Speaker 01

  Devastating.

• 8:09Speaker 02

It felt like a person, you know, you're like, oh my God. Now I just don't think about it intentionally.

• 8:13Speaker 01

Until you're here and we make you talk about it.

• 8:15Speaker 02

No, I can talk about it in a sort of emotionally distant way, but I realized there was a while where it was like every day you think of something else that you lost that was precious. You go, oh, no, the slate from being there that was like on the wall, you know, like that. No, and then my dad will be like, my wine, you know, like things he collected for years.

• 8:37Dax Shepard?

What did they bring to your house, anything?

• 8:38Speaker 02

So they had almost nothing. The one thing that my dad got, thank God, because they left for an appointment before. It was just bad luck. They didn't even get a suitcase. But my dad saw the smoke and went back in and grabbed his hard drive that had all his photography on it.

• 8:52Speaker 01

  Oh, thank God.

• 8:54Speaker 02

That was one of those divine gifts.

• 8:56Dax Shepard?

  What about photo albums?

• 8:57Speaker 02

All gone, but he's like amazing about digitizing. He digitized everything. So everything was digitized. There was maybe a few things that weren't, but he's like obsessive Virgo who, he would spend months every day working like it was a job, digitizing his photography. Whenever he was off work, you'd be like, have a little fun, you know?

• 9:15Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. This is killing you.

• 9:17Speaker 02

  That's my legacy.

• 9:18Speaker 01

Yes. I feel like we learned nothing from the fires because when it was happening, I was like, okay, got to digitize everything, got to make a go bag. I didn't do anything. It's been a year almost.

• 9:29Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 9:29Speaker 02

It is hard because you want the stuff in the go bag that you want. I want stuff I want to wear, but then I want to wear that, so take it out of the go bag.

• 9:36Dax Shepard?

  Sure, sure, sure, sure.

• 9:37Speaker 02

It's like the go bag, do you buy just like an extra pair of jeans that you love and an extra top that you love and put it in the go bag?

• 9:43Dax Shepard?

What did you pack? See clothes, this is a fascinating kind of gendered thing, which is Kristen was making these decisions from her closet that were Sophie's Choice-esque. It's like, fuck, I gotta leave a lot of this behind. To me, it was a little nuts. I'm like, oh, well, I have a car collection. That's going to be gone. How many can we actually drive out of here?

• 10:02Speaker 02

Jonathan insisted on driving each car out.

• 10:05Dax Shepard?

  He did?

• 10:06Speaker 02

Like, I mean, we don't have like any fan, you know, we had an extra car that he just was like, well, if it's there, it's going.

• 10:13Dax Shepard?

  So he was shuttling around?

• 10:14Speaker 02

He kind of shuttled that out, but we had so little time and I had to pack the kids and me and packed our cat stuff up. And we'd just gotten three kittens.

• 10:23Dax Shepard?

  Oh, fuck.

• 10:23Speaker 02

And so I was just like, I only had a really short time.

• 10:26Dax Shepard?

It limits where you can go too as well. Like if you called me and said, hey, I'd like to come over with my family, I'd be like, absolutely. And if you go, but I have three kittens, I would go, call some other people first.

• 10:34Speaker 01

  Oh, no.

• 10:35Dax Shepard?

You know, like, I'm still here for you, but try to find a more hospitable.

• 10:39Speaker 02

We were in like a tiny hotel room with three kittens.

• 10:42Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay.

• 10:42Speaker 02

And normally they don't sleep in our room and they're so cute, but they were being. Understandably worried about me and so they kept snuggling up like and I'd be like, but I can't sleep licking any skin that was exposed.

• 10:56Dax Shepard?

Well, they want to eat you a little bit, don't they?

• 10:58Speaker 01

They were sensing her anxiety and they were trying to fix it, but it was really making it worse.

• 11:02Dax Shepard?

But then we also know that they eat their owners when they die. Like, we know that about them.

• 11:07Speaker 01

  They eat your brain.

• 11:08Speaker 02

  Dogs and cats.

• 11:09Dax Shepard?

I'm glad this topic came up and you now have cats because I was watching last night a commercial on 60 Minutes. In this commercial, it was for Fancy Feast and they were like, she'll know. You know, whenever they treat the cat like she's some elegant mistress.

• 11:24Speaker 02

  A queen.

• 11:25Dax Shepard?

And then the owner, the mom, she unveiled this Fancy Feast that comes in a can, but it's like layered at the top. It looks gorgeous.

• 11:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:33Dax Shepard?

And I was like, when did we decide cats are fancy?

• 11:37Speaker 02

I know why. It's kind of a weird reason, though. It's more about marketing. It's just that when dogs run, they're like, oh, oh, oh.

• 11:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:46Speaker 02

  When cats walk, they're like.

• 11:48Dax Shepard?

  A little prissy.

• 11:49Speaker 02

Because they have slinkies in their back. They're like, yeah, like and everything. And they can fully fold. They're very elegant. If you are holding a cat and they start wiggling and then they jump out of your arms, they literally won't fall. They'll always fall on their feet. Whereas if you're holding a dog and you dropped the dog, the dog might.

• 12:10Dax Shepard?

  They'll land on its rib.

• 12:11Speaker 02

  Yeah, it might hurt.

• 12:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 12:13Speaker 02

But the cat will land on its feet.

• 12:14Dax Shepard?

They're very agile. That I agree.

• 12:17Speaker 02

  I think that's why.

• 12:18Dax Shepard?

But the classiness, this notion that we're gonna feed this cat this feast, a fancy feast. I think it has more to do with the owners.

• 12:27Speaker 02

Well, I have three cats. One of them looks crazy.

• 12:30Dax Shepard?

Have you owned cats prior to these cats?

• 12:32Speaker 02

  No, they're my first cats.

• 12:33Dax Shepard?

  And are they changing you?

• 12:34Speaker 02

Yeah. I always loved cats. I always thought they were so cute, but I never had one before. And they're very affectionate.

• 12:40Speaker 01

I think it's because. We associate them with being smart. They are smart.

• 12:45Speaker 02

  They're so smart. It's crazy.

• 12:47Speaker 01

  Yeah, they are.

• 12:48Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 12:48Speaker 02

  My cats are so smart.

• 12:50Dax Shepard?

They are? It's like smarter than a do- do you have had dogs?

• 12:53Speaker 02

They're smarter than the dogs. Like, the dogs are a little like, you know, I mean, look, the, the dog I worked with on this movie is like incredibly smart.

• 13:00Speaker 01

  Well, that's an actor, yeah.

• 13:01Speaker 02

  He's a dog actor.

• 13:02Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 13:04Speaker 02

  He's smart.

• 13:05Dax Shepard?

They're cut from a different cloth.

• 13:06Speaker 02

And I love dogs, but my cats, I show them to do something once and they do it immediately. Like, I got a new litter thing, a litter robot.

• 13:14Dax Shepard?

  Oh, sure, sure.

• 13:15Speaker 02

It's like, pretty cool. There was all this stuff. It was like, you have to do all this stuff to switch them. I literally put the litter in. My favorite cat, Dove, was looking at me. I looked at her and she saw, she jumped in and used it right away.

• 13:26Dax Shepard?

On command, she went. Number one or two.

• 13:29Speaker 02

  I can't remember.

• 13:29Dax Shepard?

Okay. I think you'd remember if it was number two.

• 13:32Speaker 02

I think it was number one.

• 13:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 13:33Speaker 01

Yeah, it doesn't matter. She had to work her way up to number two.

• 13:36Dax Shepard?

Guys, at the risk of offending anyone, you don't think there's anything to do with the just gendered nature of cat ownership?

• 13:41Speaker 02

Oh, that cats are more female?

• 13:43Dax Shepard?

Like, would that women wanna make this fancy meal for their cat? I don't know. I just can't imagine a dude in the commercial for the dog, you know, it's three-tiered and then there's this beautiful thing on top. I don't know.

• 13:55Speaker 01

  I guess.

• 13:56Dax Shepard?

Something's going on with what we've done to cats.

• 13:59Speaker 02

I think it's not just the owner's gender, but it's how we gender the species. Cause I think we gender dogs as male and gender cats as female, that they're fancy.

• 14:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 14:08Dax Shepard?

  Sure, sure. Or elegant.

• 14:09Speaker 02

  I don't know. Elegant. Yes.

• 14:11Dax Shepard?

It just really hit me last night. And I've been watching those commercials for 50 years, but last night I was like, wow, they put a lot of effort into this cat food.

• 14:18Speaker 01

Although, dog food has become more and more, it's like dogs need human food now.

• 14:23Speaker 02

  Right.

• 14:23Speaker 01

Fancy Feast is not human grade, but most dogs I know now eat human food.

• 14:29Speaker 02

  Right.

• 14:30Speaker 01

Like, cooked on a stove till it's mushy and palatable for them.

• 14:35Dax Shepard?

Delivery system that embarrasses me a little bit. It's very fresh and expensive.

• 14:39Speaker 01

And I guess it is still male. Like, males need, they do need their stuff to be perfect.

• 14:43Dax Shepard?

Yeah, for our muscles, our muscles.

• 14:45Speaker 02

They gotta get the muscles going.

• 14:47Dax Shepard?

Okay, back to Jonathan. So during the fires.

• 14:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:51Dax Shepard?

I imagine you're in a similar situation with Kristen, which is my hunch is you have a more traditional dude on your hands.

• 14:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:58Dax Shepard?

Cause he's a builder. And where is he from?

• 15:01Speaker 02

  Canada.

• 15:01Dax Shepard?

  Canada.

• 15:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:03Speaker 01

  So he's just nice.

• 15:04Speaker 02

  He's so nice.

• 15:05Dax Shepard?

  But rugged.

• 15:06Speaker 02

He grew up on a ranch.

• 15:07Dax Shepard?

  He's rugged.

• 15:08Speaker 02

Yeah. Oh, yeah. He grew up like picking rocks off the ground.

• 15:12Dax Shepard?

  Off the ground and setting.

• 15:12Speaker 02

And yeah, and like building fences.

• 15:14Speaker 01

  And while you're in Hollywood.

• 15:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:18Dax Shepard?

If you think it's still completely a fairy tale for you, it still feels like.

• 15:23Speaker 01

  There were fences there.

• 15:24Dax Shepard?

Yeah, like your imagination of his childhood versus maybe what it was. So I said at one point, okay, so we're getting close to, you know, they've evacuated, I don't know, six blocks away. And I was like, okay, you know, if it gets to ours, you guys bounce. I'm staying. You know, I had all the hoses out and the generator, but I was going to stay for sure and water the house.

• 15:45Speaker 02

Okay. So what was interesting was I was like, he kept being like, and I'm like, seriously? We're gonna have to go.

• 15:52Speaker 01

Yeah. And you're like, my parents' house just burned down.

• 15:55Speaker 02

Well, it wasn't gone yet. Yeah, no, we had to evacuate pretty soon. So that day.

• 16:00Dax Shepard?

  Where do you live?

• 16:01Speaker 02

  We're in Brentwood.

• 16:02Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 16:03Speaker 02

Yeah. He just is like, don't freak out. And I'm like, I'm freaking out. So I would say I'm more on the, let's just evacuate before we need to. And he's like, let's just wait.

• 16:13Speaker 01

Yeah. And it's like, why wait?

• 16:14Speaker 02

And I'm like, why are we waiting? Let's get out. The evacuation situation was so interesting. Everyone was evacuated in that time. And so you go to a hotel and it's like all the doodles and the palisades. It's a dog. It was kind of like cheering me up because everyone has a doodle.

• 16:31Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 16:32Speaker 02

A doodle city. And then what was also funny was the hotel was still doing people's weddings at the same time.

• 16:39Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 16:40Speaker 02

Cause they're not gonna call off people's weddings.

• 16:41Dax Shepard?

No, no, fires are no fires.

• 16:43Speaker 02

And I had to take the cats out of the room so they could clean it. And I have like three kittens and kitten carriers. And I'm sitting there, everyone's just in this state. And they're like, so over here is where we'll do cocktail hour. Like they're doing.

• 16:56Dax Shepard?

  The show must go on.

• 16:58Speaker 02

  This is so wild.

• 17:00Speaker 01

  Life is wild.

• 17:01Speaker 02

  Yeah, life is wild.

• 17:02Dax Shepard?

Do you ever get conscious of, you know, people recognize you. You're aware of it and you're often in public doing things that are just kind of weird because you're a human and you have to do weird things. So I'd imagine like someone who is on vacation and then you're there with three cats.

• 17:15Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 17:16Dax Shepard?

Like, hey, gotta get these out of the room.

• 17:18Speaker 02

Looking crazy, sweatpants. It definitely was like, if someone recognizes me, this will be like a fun story.

• 17:25Dax Shepard?

Like if you saw Al Pacino holding three cats.

• 17:28Speaker 02

I kind of gave them a gift.

• 17:29Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 17:30Speaker 02

I would be like, this is the best celeb sighting ever. Let me tell you what I saw, Al Pacino holding three cats.

• 17:35Dax Shepard?

I would guess, this is such a guess because I wasn't on the show, but I feel like the fans of New Girl are really great fans.

• 17:41Speaker 02

  Oh, yes, I love them.

• 17:43Speaker 01

Because it's such a good show, so again, smart cats.

• 17:46Dax Shepard?

And also conceptually, it's like, we're gonna root for quirky.

• 17:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:51Dax Shepard?

Right? So that weeds out, it's not Beverly Hills 90210 at that point. It's something different.

• 17:57Speaker 02

It's true. It's definitely such a good group. I love everyone that comes up to me and watches that show. And what I've noticed, it's kind of weird and it's not what I would expect, is that, by the way, I keep like accidentally looking at the camera behind your head.

• 18:10Dax Shepard?

What was your first day in front of a camera? Like you caught your reflection, you can't look away.

• 18:17Speaker 02

I love the people who like New Girl. Also, a lot of people use it as like a comfort thing where they watch it again and again. They're like, I watch it every night before I go to bed. I love that and it makes me feel like we can be cozy for them. We're like a nice sleep.

• 18:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 18:34Speaker 01

What's your show? What's your cozy show or movie?

• 18:37Speaker 02

We like to watch true crime.

• 18:39Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 18:40Speaker 02

  Is that like weird?

• 18:41Speaker 01

No, we just learned about this. Does your husband like true crime too? Okay, I like that. That's gender.

• 18:48Dax Shepard?

  Challenging.

• 18:49Speaker 02

Don't men like true crime? He doesn't like Bravo as much as I do.

• 18:52Dax Shepard?

We just had an expert on about this.

• 18:54Speaker 02

  About true crime?

• 18:55Dax Shepard?

  Specifically, the book was.

• 18:57Speaker 01

  Morbid curiosity.

• 18:58Dax Shepard?

  Morbid curiosity.

• 18:58Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 18:59Dax Shepard?

And how beneficial it is for us as humans to be able to model out our fears.

• 19:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 19:04Dax Shepard?

  And plan.

• 19:05Speaker 01

We're attracted to true crime because we can kind of in our brains play out or hear the end of a story that we might find ourselves.

• 19:13Speaker 02

  Right.

• 19:13Dax Shepard?

Specifically, viewers are really interested when you do studies on them. What sign did this person miss? That's women's big preoccupation a lot with true crime is wow, they knew this guy. What did they miss? I gotta find out what not to miss.

• 19:26Speaker 02

No, it's true. I like it when there's like a new documentary that's eight parts or something.

• 19:31Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 19:31Speaker 02

I love like the staircase, that type of thing.

• 19:34Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I love that.

• 19:35Speaker 02

  So good.

• 19:35Dax Shepard?

Remember how good the staircase was? You had to order the DVDs from Netflix and it took a long time. You had to get up and put them in.

• 19:41Speaker 02

  You really earned it.

• 19:42Dax Shepard?

You know what was nice about this, and I'm just remembering, is now when you're streaming, you just run through. Whereas you had a built in break.

• 19:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 19:50Dax Shepard?

To stand up and go put that DVD in and be like, oh, let's go to the bathroom. Let's make more snacks. It kind of compartmentalized it in a fun way.

• 19:57Speaker 01

You know what I was thinking recently? I think the streamers should have a playlist option where you can make your own playlist of episodes of any TV show or movie or whatever.

• 20:08Speaker 02

  That's a great idea. I think you're totally right.

• 20:09Speaker 01

I mean, how much are they gonna pay me for this? Cause if you make a playlist and then you just put on, it's like, oh, I'm watching this episode of Friends and then this episode of New Girl and then this episode.

• 20:18Dax Shepard?

And you're saying it would be communal, kind of social networking?

• 20:20Speaker 01

If we wanted it to be, but it's just like, I'm letting that run all day. A playlist I created.

• 20:25Dax Shepard?

You would love that because you re-watch things a lot. Do you do a lot of re-watching?

• 20:29Speaker 02

It depends. There are movies that I like to re-watch. I don't normally like re-watch a TV show.

• 20:34Dax Shepard?

  Okay, now Christmas time.

• 20:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:36Dax Shepard?

  Is upon us.

• 20:38Speaker 02

  It's upon us.

• 20:39Dax Shepard?

I've always wondered, like, we've never interviewed Chevy Chase, but I do want to know. I would love if a movie of mine came out every single year.

• 20:47Speaker 02

  It's great.

• 20:48Dax Shepard?

And a great one of mine, no less.

• 20:50Speaker 02

  Right.

• 20:51Dax Shepard?

  Is it fun?

• 20:51Speaker 02

  I love it.

• 20:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 20:53Speaker 02

I knew when I read that script, I was like, man, if this hits, it'll come around every year and that is good realistic.

• 20:59Dax Shepard?

It hit, it joined the group of like 10.

• 21:01Speaker 01

  Yeah, best.

• 21:02Speaker 02

  It's incredible.

• 21:03Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 21:03Speaker 02

  Was such a fortunate thing.

• 21:04Dax Shepard?

So now, when you were here last time in 2022 February, your children hadn't seen it.

• 21:09Speaker 02

They still have barely seen it. Last year, I offered it up and they chose to watch Die Hard instead.

• 21:15Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 21:15Dax Shepard?

Cool, we just watched that for the first time on Friday.

• 21:18Speaker 02

Which is a great Christmas movie.

• 21:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 21:19Speaker 02

Don't judge me that I'm like, is watch Die Hard?

• 21:22Dax Shepard?

  No, that's okay, that's good.

• 21:23Speaker 02

They loved it, but this year, my daughter was like, I'd like to watch Elf with my friends.

• 21:27Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 21:28Dax Shepard?

  With her friends?

• 21:29Speaker 02

Yeah, not with me, no. I'm like, I'll do a Q and A afterwards if you want.

• 21:33Dax Shepard?

  Sure, sure.

• 21:34Speaker 01

  People pay money for this.

• 21:35Speaker 02

  I'm like, listen.

• 21:36Speaker 01

Does she ever say like, mom?

• 21:38Speaker 02

Well, it took a long time because she likes to sing. I'd give her advice, she wouldn't take it.

• 21:42Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, same.

• 21:43Speaker 02

And then finally, she was like, oh, okay. Oh, that was a good note. And I'd be like, um, yeah.

• 21:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 21:52Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 21:53Dax Shepard?

  Hello.

• 21:54Speaker 01

I have sung my whole life, okay? Yeah, it's like someone else probably told her, you know, your mom's like, really good. It's not just your mom saying she's good, she's actually good. It's so hard to be a parent, I'm sorry, you guys.

• 22:06Dax Shepard?

  Well, if it helps you.

• 22:07Speaker 02

It is hard to be a parent.

• 22:09Dax Shepard?

Our 12 year old also wants to be a singer. Her mother is also very well known as being an accomplished singer. Zero interest in her feedback or input. She more wants, and I can relate to this, she just wants to click to peer mode, where they're both just talking about music.

• 22:24Speaker 02

  Right.

• 22:25Dax Shepard?

And they both get it, but the 12 year old hasn't had the education yet.

• 22:27Speaker 02

  Right.

• 22:28Dax Shepard?

Have they watched anything of yours that they love?

• 22:30Speaker 02

So they like the trolls movies because it's like I'm a voice. They're not seeing me. I think Elsie is a little more like, oh, that's kind of cool, you're in a movie. Charlie's like, weird.

• 22:41Dax Shepard?

This is just concerning. He wants you to be mom.

• 22:43Speaker 02

  Yeah. They're good with that.

• 22:45Speaker 01

Well, also, if you're being like hot in a movie.

• 22:48Speaker 02

  Oh, that would be weird.

• 22:49Speaker 01

Of course, your boy's son is gonna be like.

• 22:51Speaker 02

  Yeah, ugh, don't do that.

• 22:52Speaker 01

Yeah. How about you don't do that, mom?

• 22:55Dax Shepard?

That's the only thing that they can't stand. Well, just the older one, the cheating aspect.

• 23:00Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 23:01Dax Shepard?

Likes some of the stuff we've done, but they don't want to watch. Nobody wants this. They don't want to see mom like in love with some other dude. Even though I love it.

• 23:09Speaker 02

  Right.

• 23:10Dax Shepard?

Look how steamy this kiss is. How'd they, how'd they get this?

• 23:13Speaker 02

So, growing up, my parents both worked on Twin Peaks. And my mom was on it. I remember this, there's like a part where it's supposed to be setting up that she had an affair with this other character. And he literally just kisses her arm where he's like. And I was like nine years old when this was on and they let me watch it. Maybe it wasn't appropriate, but it was an incredible show, so I was happy. But I remember being like, this is too much. The murder was fine, but the kissing my mom's arm, not okay.

• 23:40Speaker 01

  Too intimate.

• 23:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, too much.

• 23:42Speaker 01

  Married Joe.

• 23:43Speaker 02

  I get that.

• 23:44Dax Shepard?

I know this, I did hate, my mom has big boobs.

• 23:48Dax Shepard?

And she would occasionally wear, not occasionally, kind of often, super tight tank top.

• 23:52Speaker 02

  Right.

• 23:52Dax Shepard?

And we'd go out like to the grocery store or whatever. And she was young, she had me when she was 23.

• 23:57Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 23:58Dax Shepard?

I didn't mind in the house. I didn't like that I could see dudes were like, oh, you know, like I could see guys clocking her, staring at her, coming over and chatting.

• 24:06Speaker 02

  Right.

• 24:07Dax Shepard?

Overly familiar and I hated it. I just like, get out of here, guys.

• 24:11Speaker 02

  That's your mommy.

• 24:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 24:12Speaker 01

And you knew it was because of her blampers?

• 24:15Dax Shepard?

Yeah, because I'm a good at pattern recognition. And when she didn't wear that tank top, there wasn't as much action.

• 24:21Speaker 02

And you're like, mom, wear something different.

• 24:22Dax Shepard?

Put something baggy on. You can be fucking tight topped at the house. I'm just like a Muslim father.

• 24:28Speaker 01

  Or an incel.

• 24:29Dax Shepard?

I just made me like an incel or a controlling.

• 24:32Speaker 01

I wonder if some incels come about because their moms have big blampers.

• 24:36Dax Shepard?

Big blampers at all the guys. Well, definitely I'd see her like get ready to go into the mall and be like, oh, fuck, she's wearing like.

• 24:42Speaker 01

  You did?

• 24:43Dax Shepard?

Yeah, she's wearing tight shirt and all the lunatics are gonna come out of the woodwork.

• 24:46Speaker 02

I've never heard the word blamper before.

• 24:49Dax Shepard?

That's in New Zealand, we were working in New Zealand.

• 24:52Speaker 01

This is a huge ding ding ding. It just came up on last week's episode.

• 24:55Dax Shepard?

  With Jake.

• 24:56Speaker 01

  With your co-star Jake Johnson.

• 24:58Speaker 02

Oh, my god, Jake Johnson was last week.

• 25:00Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 25:00Dax Shepard?

  And you've never heard blampers?

• 25:02Speaker 02

  No.

• 25:03Dax Shepard?

But when you hear the term blampers.

• 25:05Speaker 02

  I know what you mean.

• 25:05Dax Shepard?

  You know, right?

• 25:06Speaker 02

  Yeah, I'd be like.

• 25:07Dax Shepard?

And somehow Jake didn't, which is bullshit.

• 25:10Speaker 02

  He couldn't figure it out?

• 25:11Speaker 01

  He couldn't.

• 25:12Dax Shepard?

Don't you think that sounds like?

• 25:13Speaker 02

Now I bet he's using it all the time.

• 25:14Dax Shepard?

I bet he's got a shirt that says, I love blampers.

• 25:16Speaker 02

  I'm sure he does.

• 25:18Dax Shepard?

Sounds like him. Okay, so we never finished up. Does Jonathan, are there ever moments where you're like, just be an LA guy and call somebody?

• 25:28Speaker 02

Oh, there's never a thing that he's not fixing himself, pretty much. It never like annoys me because if he doesn't fix it himself, he'll get someone in to fix it. But sometimes it's get break next speed. I was like, there's somebody here already fixing the thing. Like, he does everything so fast.

• 25:42Dax Shepard?

So you just love it? It sounds like you're an hammer.

• 25:44Speaker 02

It's good because I don't know how to fix all those things. And he has a little list and he loves to tinker. So we have a place in New York and we were there for Thanksgiving and he spent the entire time.

• 25:57Dax Shepard?

  Hiding from you guys.

• 25:58Speaker 02

No, he was just fixing stuff the whole time.

• 26:00Speaker 01

  That's how that's hide.

• 26:01Speaker 02

He spent an entire day fixing things.

• 26:04Dax Shepard?

Similarly, we were in Nashville for Thanksgiving. And I spent the entire trip trying to figure out the pool heaters that were both broken.

• 26:10Speaker 02

  He'd be obsessed.

• 26:11Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, it's all I did is draining the pool at one point.

• 26:14Speaker 02

Maybe we need to go on vacation together and you guys can just fix stuff.

• 26:17Dax Shepard?

  Take us to a dump.

• 26:19Speaker 01

Sounds like a horrible vacation, just looking at what's wrong.

• 26:23Speaker 02

He'll be like, oh, there's something wrong, let me, let me help you.

• 26:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 26:25Speaker 02

He's like, why don't you call me? If we have friends that need something fixed, he's like, why don't you call me? I would have come over.

• 26:30Speaker 01

  Oh, that's sweet.

• 26:31Speaker 02

He'll go to neighbors' houses and like weed through water and fix their thing.

• 26:35Dax Shepard?

Oh, he's a hero in Brentwood.

• 26:37Speaker 02

He fixes all the neighbors' stuff, the water thing and I don't know what they're even called, but he fixes them.

• 26:42Speaker 01

How far is he willing to travel? Because my home is almost ready and I surely will need, I can't do anything.

• 26:48Speaker 02

He will, he will travel, he will travel.

• 26:49Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 26:49Dax Shepard?

  He's got a tool, he's got a toolbox.

• 26:51Speaker 02

  Yeah, make a list.

• 26:52Dax Shepard?

Okay, I watched a video of him walking, I guess, people through your house.

• 26:58Speaker 01

  I watched the Architectural Digest.

• 27:00Speaker 02

And me, I was in it too.

• 27:01Dax Shepard?

No, this is a different thing.

• 27:03Speaker 02

Was it in our LA house or New York?

• 27:06Dax Shepard?

LA, I'm presuming. This was a Christmas specific video.

• 27:10Speaker 02

That's our house, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 27:11Dax Shepard?

And he was showing all the Christmas decorations that apparently takes six days to put up.

• 27:15Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 27:16Dax Shepard?

And when I saw this footage, it's overwhelming. It's the Gonzo Garden level. So you guys really go berserk.

• 27:24Speaker 02

  We go berserk, it's crazy.

• 27:25Speaker 01

And do you help with that or is that all him?

• 27:27Speaker 02

Yeah, well, I'm always involved in the design. When we started our really crazy decorating journey, I pulled tons of inspiration photos. Like, I wanted it to look like a vintage kind of Christmas. Oh. But then, since then, we have these guys from this place Glitterville come and do our house. And they do an amazing job.

• 27:46Dax Shepard?

You have the same tree, I noticed. You have a fake tree that's a good 12 feet tall.

• 27:49Speaker 02

They're all fake, which I like a real tree. But Jonathan likes to have the trees that we take in and out. And then they have the lights built in. At first, I was like, a fake tree? Because growing up, we always got real trees. But now I've come to love our trees, but they're decorated amazingly. Last year was champagne. Ooh. One of the trees. This year, that same tree is more like gingerbread-y.

• 28:11Dax Shepard?

  It was very Dr. Seuss.

• 28:12Speaker 02

And then we have one tree that's super colorful. And then upstairs, each of the kids have their own trees. They can just make whatever ornaments and like put all those like creative things. And they'll no doubt be like really fun because the kids always do fun stuff. And then Elsie has a little Christmas tree in her room. It's funny because growing up, our tree always had these special ornaments. Now, it's more like we have this decorating. It's a little more. Polish. Yeah, it was all on a theme.

• 28:39Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, it's very well balanced.

• 28:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:41Dax Shepard?

I also read, which I'm interested in because we're in the same situation.

• 28:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:45Dax Shepard?

I presume one of our children wants to act.

• 28:48Speaker 02

  Uh huh.

• 28:49Dax Shepard?

  Your daughter?

• 28:50Speaker 02

They both like to perform. My daughter, she does theater, musical theater. She's a good singer and actor, and she likes to perform. It's like she openly likes it.

• 29:00Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 29:00Speaker 02

My son break dances and he does like to do theater and stuff like that. But then he'll be like, I don't want it. And then he'll be like, oh, hey, watch this. And then he'll do like a crazy breakdancing move. Like, if he were here and I said, hey, Charlie, can you breakdance? And he'd be like, no. But if he were here and we were ignoring him, he'd be like, let me show you a breakdancing move.

• 29:20Dax Shepard?

Yeah, watch these flips. Sounds like we have the same rule in the house, which is, you know, when you're an adult, go crazy. But you're not acting professionally.

• 29:28Speaker 02

Exactly. So that was my parents' rule because they were in the business. They said to me, if you want to be an actor. You can get an agent and go to auditions when you're 16 and can drive yourself.

• 29:42Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 29:43Speaker 02

But you're not gonna be like a child actor and we're not taking you to set. But you can do as much theater and music stuff and whatever you want to do. We just want you to be a kid.

• 29:53Dax Shepard?

  We have the same program.

• 29:55Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 29:55Dax Shepard?

But then I heard you in an interview today talking about this unexpected thing that has happened, which is some of their classmates are on TV. They're in shows.

• 30:06Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 30:06Dax Shepard?

  Or they're in movies.

• 30:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:07Dax Shepard?

And they do leave school and audition and they're in commercials. And it is funny because my kids will be like, yeah, that's Sarah from... So in some weird ways, it's very out of touch. Yet they live in this house with professional... It's very weird.

• 30:20Speaker 02

  It is weird.

• 30:20Dax Shepard?

  I'd imagine for that.

• 30:21Speaker 02

Yeah, Elsie said to me, well, so and so did a commercial. And I'm like, okay, well, I'm not their mom.

• 30:26Speaker 01

Yeah, that's the whole of their house.

• 30:28Speaker 02

But I also am like, do you guys want to learn a ton of lines and have thousands of dollars going out the window if you don't know them? I want you to have the experience where you can be a little more relaxed about your prep and then learn through doing theater and all that. And then by the time you're an actor, if you want to be, you're a professional who comes to set prepared. It's a real thing.

• 30:51Speaker 01

Probably the kids' parents who are in the commercial, the parents are not actors. That's the thing. They don't know, oh, you should really get a handle on it now before you need to go be professional. Or for them, it's exciting.

• 31:06Speaker 02

  Right.

• 31:07Speaker 01

Oh, my God, you're gonna do a commercial.

• 31:08Speaker 02

And every kid is different. I mean, there are kids, you know, when you work with the kid actors that you're like, you were the kid that's meant to be a kid actor.

• 31:15Dax Shepard?

Josh Hutcherson. I'm like, so glad.

• 31:17Speaker 02

Oh, my God, I worked with Josh when he was a kid, too.

• 31:19Dax Shepard?

  Oh, you did?

• 31:20Speaker 02

Yes, he was at Bridge to Tribeca.

• 31:22Dax Shepard?

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 31:23Speaker 02

Yes, Anna Sophia Robb, too. They were the kids in this movie. And I was like, you guys are so insanely professional. I think there's the kids that are kid actors. And I think my kids will like come to the place. I just also want them to want to do it.

• 31:36Dax Shepard?

I want to protect going to Northwestern with crazy outfits and not fitting in.

• 31:42Speaker 02

  Yes, exactly.

• 31:43Dax Shepard?

That's what I want to protect. I don't want them

• 31:45Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 31:46Dax Shepard?

  being famous

• 31:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:48Dax Shepard?

When they're supposed to be getting their ass kicked and confused.

• 31:51Speaker 02

I want all the character building stuff.

• 31:53Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, me too.

• 31:53Speaker 02

It's why I like drill. Make sure that we're always polite. When you go to someone's house, that you're not assuming you get, you know, it's like that you say thank you and please, you make sure they know you're happy to be there and all that stuff. I'm like, there's so much to learn without then also having to earn money.

• 32:10Speaker 01

  Have a job.

• 32:11Speaker 02

Yeah, because it's a real job. And sometimes even the most mature kids have a freak out on set. And I'm like, I don't want that to be my kid. Yeah, I know, I know.

• 32:19Dax Shepard?

You saying that be polite made me think of this other thing that I think is hard to navigate. When you have kids and you're on TV, which is, I need them to know we're getting treated nicer than you're supposed to get treated.

• 32:32Speaker 02

  I know.

• 32:33Dax Shepard?

When you and Jonathan go to a restaurant, odds are some people there are going to be excited you're there and they're going to be extra nice to you.

• 32:39Speaker 02

  Extra dessert.

• 32:40Dax Shepard?

Yes, I feel trapped in the situation where it's like, it's not their fault. Their real life experience is everywhere we go. People are more excited, but I also need to prep them for the reality of life, which is like, people are not excited to wait on you.

• 32:52Speaker 02

Well, they were so young. I was on a TV show. Jonathan was on a TV show. My sister was on a TV show. My brother-in-law was on a TV show. They had a friend over and they were like, what's your daddy's TV show?

• 33:03Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 33:03Speaker 02

And I was like, oh, my God.

• 33:04Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 33:05Dax Shepard?

  It's just like standard.

• 33:07Speaker 02

I go, not everybody's dad or mom does TV.

• 33:11Speaker 01

Well, also, yeah, grandpa is in the industry.

• 33:14Speaker 02

They thought everyone had a TV show. And I was like, oh, no. Okay. We need to make sure they know everyone has different jobs.

• 33:23Speaker 03

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert, if you dare.

Thanks again to our presenting sponsor, Audible, for their support. So Audible just dropped their Best of 2025 collection. And I gotta say, this is one of those things that actually makes your life easier, Monica. Their editors have been doing the heavy lifting. We're talking countless hours of listening, heated debates and the whole thing. They've handpicked the year's top audiobooks, podcasts and originals across all your favorite genres. And what I love is that they're not just highlighting the giant releases, though those are in there. They've also dug up some real hidden gems, the stuff that might have. Own under the radar, but totally deserves your attention. I love a good recommendation. My queue is out of control, so anytime there's a curated list like this, I breathe a little easier. Two titles I'm excited about. Sunrise on the Reaping. Anything Hunger Games related is an automatic ad for me.

• 34:13Dax Shepard?

Fall is that time when your body and mind are getting ready for the winter. You're settling in, bracing for the cold. Your body's already running a deficit from the shorter days and broken sleep patterns. You don't want a nutrient deficit stacked on top of that, too.

• 34:48Speaker 01

That's where your AG1 routine earns its spot. It's not fixing your sleep or your alarm time. It's giving your body what it needs so the dark mornings don't tank you before you even start. One scoop cold water every morning before anything else.

• 35:00Dax Shepard?

AG1 Next Gen has 75 plus ingredients, vitamins, minerals, pre and probiotics, superfoods, backed by four separate gold standard clinical trials. Key nutrient levels improved with three months of consistent use.

• 35:15Speaker 01

That's the part people miss. It's not a one day fix. It's what happens when you stay consistent.

• 35:19Dax Shepard?

It's an easy, everyday thing. I've added it to my morning routine and I'm going to tell you, I actually love the taste of it. It's like Pavlovian. I drink it and I know I'm going to get that little vitamin buzz.

• 35:29Speaker 01

Well, that's also the thing. When you do it first thing in the morning, you already feel kind of self-esteem because you're like, I already did something good for myself.

• 35:36Dax Shepard?

Yes. We've talked before about Rob building our website on Squarespace and I bring it up again because it's a perfect example of what they do well. Rob had all the pieces, the content, the vision, the ideas, but he needed something to actually take all that and make it public facing and Squarespace was that bridge. Maybe you're in the same spot.

• 36:21Dax Shepard?

You've been developing something, a business, a skillset, a body of work, and it's been private, it's been yours, but at some point you're ready to put it out there and that transition from private to public can feel like a huge leap. Squarespace makes it feel like a step. Beautiful templates, built-in SEO, email campaigns, scheduling, analytics, everything you need to go from, "I've been working on this," to "Here it is, come find me." All in one place, no code, no stitching together a bunch of different tools. So if you've been sitting on something and waiting for the right moment, this might be it. • 37:05Dax Shepard?

We get support from Scottsdale, Arizona. Monica, with summer ending or heading into fall, I've been researching a nice quick getaway location and I keep coming back to Scottsdale, Arizona.

• 37:16Speaker 01

Ooh, Scottsdale's good. What's drawing you to it?

• 37:19Dax Shepard?

Well, first of all, I have this wonderful memory of going there as a kid when I would go see my stepdad when he was working out there. The weather is perfect in fall, warm, sunny, no humidity, and you can really do whatever you want with your time there. I want to do a sunrise hike through the Sonoran Desert, be surrounded by Saguaro, and then at the same afternoon, just completely melt into a spa treatment at one of their luxury resorts.

• 37:44Speaker 01

Oh, that sounds amazing. I want to do that. Also, I was there visiting my brother once and I loved Old Town Scottsdale. It's so walkable, they have galleries and cute little restaurants and shops. The food scene alone is worth the trip.

• 37:58Dax Shepard?

What I keep reading is that it's luxurious, but not stuffy. There's no pressure to do it a certain way. You can explore public art, check out the architecture, go off-roading in the desert, or just sit and watch a sunset.

• 38:10Speaker 01

It really is the perfect fall reset.

• 38:12Dax Shepard?

Learn more about all Scottsdale has to offer at unwindinscottsdale.com.

• 38:23Dax Shepard?

Okay, one thing we just grazed on last time you were here, but now I'm way more interested in it and I want to talk more for a minute and it's gonna drive Monica crazy, but it also be good. ADHD.

• 38:35Speaker 02

Yes. Oh, is it gonna drive you crazy?

• 38:37Dax Shepard?

Well, she rightly so. Me too. It's in your algorithm. ADHD clips, that's all anyone sees now. Everyone thinks they have it. I think I do, and this is frustrating, of course, because everyone's self-diagnosing.

• 38:50Speaker 02

  No, I think you do.

• 38:53Speaker 01

Okay, and I'll be honest, I now do think you do.

• 38:58Dax Shepard?

  You do, okay.

• 38:58Speaker 01

But I kind of think, this is part of why I don't like it. We're gonna be honest here on the Christmas episode. For once, maybe you told us last time.

• 39:06Dax Shepard?

Yeah, she's talked about it a bunch.

• 39:07Speaker 01

Yeah, so I don't have an issue with Zoe, because that's a thing that's been in your life for so long.

• 39:14Speaker 02

I was diagnosed, the thing is, is like you have a neuropsych when you're a kid and you need to be diagnosed, because it's a whole thing and you have to take a really long test. It's like multiple days of testing.

• 39:24Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 39:24Speaker 02

And then they diagnose you with that and usually other learning differences. But when you're an adult, all you have to be is like, I have trouble focusing when I want to do my taxes. And that's not the same as going through a battery of tests.

• 39:37Speaker 01

Thank you. You're actually proving my point.

• 39:39Dax Shepard?

What's your take on everyone thinking they have ADHD?

• 39:41Speaker 02

I just know that a lot of them aren't correct. I do feel like the way that our world is right now, it's not conducive to people being able to focus. But the thing is, ADHD isn't a problem with being able to focus. Sometimes it's focusing more than you should on things.

• 39:58Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, obsessing.

• 39:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:00Dax Shepard?

You always have something you're obsessed with.

• 40:01Speaker 02

Yo, I'm a deep dive, like, crazy person. But I like that about myself. And the thing about ADHD is, I usually feel like a lot of actors have ADHD. So I'd say if you're an actor, comedian, I'm likely to think that if you say you think you do, that you probably do.

• 40:20Dax Shepard?

Well, as these memes have taken over my feed, I noticed I would answer yes to a majority of these things.

• 40:27Speaker 02

In the best way. ADHD people are like super magical and awesome. It feels like it would make sense if you said that.

• 40:33Dax Shepard?

Okay, okay. Tell me about brushing your teeth. When you brush your tooth, is that abnormally frustrating?

• 40:38Speaker 02

  Boring?

• 40:39Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 40:39Speaker 02

  So freaking boring.

• 40:40Dax Shepard?

I think it's my most hated activity. You think it's everyone?

• 40:43Speaker 01

  Guys!

• 40:44Dax Shepard?

  Okay, here we go.

• 40:45Speaker 01

  Nobody like...

• 40:48Speaker 01

  Brushing their teeth.

• 40:50Speaker 02

So I think the difference is it's like you don't like doing it, but you do it. It's excruciating.

• 40:55Dax Shepard?

  It's excruciating.

• 40:55Speaker 02

And it's why I'll be like, I need an audiobook. I love to listen to while I brush. And like doing my face products and everything. I'm like.

• 41:01Speaker 01

But 100%, by the way, this is kind of hard to do because Zoe really has it.

• 41:06Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 41:06Speaker 01

  But I don't have it. I don't think.

• 41:09Speaker 02

  You seem neurotypical to me.

• 41:10Speaker 01

Yes, I don't think I have it. And yet I put on a podcast to brush my teeth.

• 41:14Speaker 02

  Right, right.

• 41:15Speaker 01

And do my face. Like I can't, or I have to go in the other room and be doing something else. I don't think you're able. I think that's just society. We're so frantic. We're scrolling. We're doing this. We have three devices on at once. It's what we're now used to, that kind of frenetic energy. So maybe at one point I could brush my teeth, but now I can't. And I don't think that means I have ADHD.

• 41:37Speaker 02

  No, it doesn't.

• 41:38Speaker 01

It just means I'm living in a headspace that this world has created, and I think you are too. But he does have dyslexia and that is sort of maybe a comorbidity.

• 41:49Speaker 02

  I mean.

• 41:50Speaker 01

  He has it. I know.

• 41:51Speaker 02

I think he's got, I think he's part of this very wonderful club.

• 41:54Speaker 01

I know it is a wonderful club, but I have to say, the reason now I think you have it, you're not gonna like what I'm about to say.

• 42:01Dax Shepard?

  Does that interrupt?

• 42:02Speaker 01

Yes. Obviously, that's a thing that we've discussed here a lot because it's like, we can't do it because this is.

• 42:07Dax Shepard?

  Obvious reasons.

• 42:08Speaker 01

It's a show. And yet I can see that you really, really can't stop. But my worry is that you are now like, well, I have ADHD, so I'm just not gonna stop. That's my fear.

• 42:22Dax Shepard?

I always think there's a deeper thing that people are worried about. So yeah, I'm never gonna use ADHD as an excuse for anything. If like I interrupt, I still don't want to interrupt and I may mean not to.

• 42:33Speaker 02

So I understand that there's different reasons why people interrupt. So people can interrupt because they come from a family where everyone interrupts, which ADHD runs in families. And like my whole family has ADHD. My family constantly interrupting and it's hard for me too. But I will say that there's lots of reasons why people interrupt. But one reason why people with ADHD interrupt a lot is because. You're worried you're gonna forget what you're gonna say. And you're like, if I don't say it right now, I'm gonna forget. And it's really important.

• 43:00Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 43:01Speaker 02

And so it can be really hard. People will think it's rude when you interrupt, but it's not. You're just so excited about what's happening. You gotta say something.

• 43:08Speaker 01

But it's kind of rude because, because again, and this is like brushing your teeth. I too have thoughts that I'm like, I'm gonna forget it. Because I'm not gonna be able to say it right now.

• 43:22Speaker 02

  Right.

• 43:22Speaker 01

Because they're talking and I'm just gonna have to be okay forgetting it.

• 43:26Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:26Speaker 01

So that everyone can have space talking.

• 43:28Dax Shepard?

  That's the right way.

• 43:29Speaker 01

  I guess I feel like that's a sacrifice.

• 43:32Speaker 02

  Right.

• 43:32Speaker 01

  That has to be made.

• 43:34Speaker 02

Of course, there are some things that you don't wanna be using ADHD as an excuse, but it might be an explanation.

• 43:41Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 43:42Speaker 02

For certain things. But again, it is a tricky space to get into where you start being like, well, that's okay. That's why I don't get anything done because I have ADHD. It's like, well, no, that's not an excuse to not. You can still get stuff done. You just might have to figure out a new way or some different coping mechanisms. And I will say that because I was diagnosed so young and I had educational therapy really young, I was taught, I was in educational therapy two days a week from the time I was pretty young. And I never felt bad about it or anything. I just knew some stuff was different for me, but I was taught a lot of coping mechanisms, which was so helpful. And I was never medicated. I didn't need to be medicated. I just needed.

• 44:21Dax Shepard?

  Some tools.

• 44:22Speaker 02

And to understand, I need more time than other people to do things. I need to build in more time. If I don't wake up two hours before I have to leave, I'll be like, oh my God. Running back in the house like 40 times. I did it this morning where I was like running back. I forgot the dang bread. My mom brought it over. I forgot the dang bread. I go back in, I'm like, oh my God, I need my lip gloss.

• 44:43Speaker 01

Two things you did need today.

• 44:45Speaker 02

I needed it. But it's like, that's the kind of thing, I had to run back. And even then, I did wake up two hours before. I might've woken up three hours before and I still am like, whoa, you know?

• 44:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 44:55Speaker 02

But I need a lot of extra time to prep myself. Cause otherwise, my energy can be frenetic and chaotic.

• 45:01Dax Shepard?

  All over the place.

• 45:02Speaker 01

  You can say it.

• 45:03Dax Shepard?

Not at a pool. Time blind.

• 45:04Speaker 02

Time blindness is real. I have clocks everywhere.

• 45:07Speaker 01

  Clocks is good.

• 45:08Dax Shepard?

Do you have this self abuse, the kind where? When you err, you really destroy yourself for a long time.

• 45:14Speaker 02

Yes, and we used to call it the endless tape of most embarrassing moments.

• 45:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 45:20Speaker 02

My sister and I would talk about this. We're like, do you have an endless running video in your mind of like the dumbest shit you ever did? Just playing on repeat, like you're in a place where it's just like, no, we're never gonna stop this. It's always out.

• 45:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 45:33Dax Shepard?

But just glance over, I can just watch it play out. Yeah, it's always back there.

• 45:36Speaker 02

Oh, that was dumb. Let's watch that again.

• 45:38Dax Shepard?

I think about stuff I said when I was eight years old.

• 45:40Speaker 02

Me too. I feel bad about things I said when I was like four.

• 45:43Dax Shepard?

Oh, there's this one I think of all the time. It means nothing. I think about it nonstop. My mom picked me up from school one day and I decided, mm, I'm gonna sit on the floor of the car in front of the front seat. And I thought it was cool. And she was asking me about my day and I was being very aloof, cuz I was feeling like I was very cool. I just had this moment of feeling very cool. I think about that all the time.

• 46:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 46:03Dax Shepard?

Like, how embarrassing. I was acting cool in front of my mom. She was like, what is he doing? He's sitting on the floor and he's acting like he's like Fon Zarelli all of a sudden? Like, I had maybe one good day at school or something. I was feeling myself.

• 46:13Speaker 01

Maybe there's a reason you remember that, though, cuz that was a time I was inauthentic and I hated that feeling. I don't wanna do that anymore.

• 46:20Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 46:21Speaker 01

There's a reason some of those stick out.

• 46:22Dax Shepard?

  It's so insignificant, right?

• 46:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:24Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I was acting cool and aloof and sitting on the floor, but once a week I think about that for five minutes. And like, feel like, how do I get that out of my head?

• 46:31Speaker 02

  It's funny, though.

• 46:32Dax Shepard?

Do I apologize to my mom for this?

• 46:33Speaker 02

  I'm, hey, uh...

• 46:35Dax Shepard?

Eighty-four, you picked me up from school.

• 46:37Speaker 01

  January fourth.

• 46:38Dax Shepard?

Okay, let's talk about your movie.

• 46:40Speaker 02

  Okay, yes.

• 46:41Dax Shepard?

  Merv.

• 46:42Speaker 02

  Merv.

• 46:42Dax Shepard?

  You and Charlie Cox.

• 46:43Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 46:44Dax Shepard?

  Daredevil.

• 46:45Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 46:45Dax Shepard?

The movie starts as breaking up.

• 46:48Speaker 02

It's characters that have broken up, but they're sharing a dog.

• 46:51Speaker 01

  Mmm.

• 46:51Speaker 02

  And the dog is depressed.

• 46:53Dax Shepard?

He's not taking it well. What kind of things is he not doing? He doesn't wanna...

• 46:57Speaker 02

He doesn't wanna go for walks or runs. He doesn't wanna eat. He's like depressed.

• 47:02Speaker 01

What kind of dog is he?

• 47:04Speaker 02

  A mutt. A cute rescue.

• 47:07Speaker 02

Yeah, I think they toyed with different dog. I mean, what's harder is that you have to find a bunch of dogs that look just like this special mutt. Cause they cast this dog named Gus that's incredible.

• 47:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, we love Gus.

• 47:20Speaker 02

Gus is an incredible dog actor, but then they had to cast three or four more dogs that were similar to Gus. But he's like a big terrier mix mutt. If you cast a Brussels Griffon or something, they all look the same, pretty much.

• 47:33Dax Shepard?

Yeah, some cuter than others, but yeah.

• 47:35Speaker 02

  Yeah, exactly.

• 47:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 47:37Speaker 02

Or not that they all look the same, but pretty much more or less.

• 47:39Dax Shepard?

You can get away with it in a wide shot for sure.

• 47:41Speaker 02

Yeah, this was harder. They had to dye a dog's beard or something, another dog. I don't know, because they also had to be trained dogs. They had a special dog groomer that came and.

• 47:52Dax Shepard?

  How old was Gus?

• 47:54Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 47:55Speaker 01

How long has he been acting?

• 47:56Speaker 02

He's been acting a while. He's incredibly well trained and honestly loves sausages a lot.

• 48:02Dax Shepard?

And that's his, that's what he's working for? Those are the treats?

• 48:04Speaker 01

See the human food. They like the human food.

• 48:07Speaker 02

Yeah, well, they have to give him healthy treats because he gets a lot of treats. So they have to give him like healthy chicken breasts. They love chicken breasts.

• 48:15Dax Shepard?

They were cooking it up for Gus.

• 48:17Speaker 02

They're cooking it. They had little bags.

• 48:18Dax Shepard?

I wondered how old he was because I rented a sloth one time to come over for Kristen's birthday party.

• 48:23Speaker 02

Incredible video. How old was the sloth?

• 48:26Dax Shepard?

The sloth was eight or nine, but as it turned out, once we met the sloth, the sloth had been in outbreak. It had a much better career than either of us had at the time that I hired her to come over to the house for the birthday party.

• 48:40Speaker 02

Does she still love sloths as much?

• 48:42Dax Shepard?

No, I think I kind of ruined it for her a bit.

• 48:45Speaker 02

  Really?

• 48:46Dax Shepard?

  Because I think.

• 48:47Speaker 01

  Well, the world ruined it.

• 48:48Speaker 02

The world did, because the world liked it.

• 48:50Dax Shepard?

Didn't know what to get her. You got her some of the sloth. I think she got inundated with sloth stuff. So I think I might have tamped down maybe her love.

• 48:57Speaker 01

Yeah, you know, when you're a kid and it's like, oh my God, I love penguins. And then for the rest of your life, if someone sees something with a penguin, they get it for you. You're like, I don't really love penguins anymore. I'm 40.

• 49:08Speaker 02

Right. Well, my kids both have animal middle names. So like when they were babies, my daughter's Elsie Otter and my son's Charlie Wolf. And it was like nonstop wolves and otters. And Elsie goes, that's not my favorite animal. And I was like, well, it's a great animal.

• 49:23Speaker 01

  You're like, it's my favorite.

• 49:24Speaker 02

  Sorry, mine.

• 49:25Dax Shepard?

Okay, so the dog. Dog is bereft.

• 49:28Speaker 02

Charlie's character takes the dog on a beach vacation. But then I can't let go.

• 49:34Dax Shepard?

But what is the premise of the vacation spot?

• 49:36Speaker 02

It's like a dog beach. Where the dogs everywhere. It's really cute. We had all these scenes with like millions of dogs. That was so fun and funny. They had ones where dogs are like riding around in little cars.

• 49:47Speaker 01

  People are gonna love this.

• 49:48Speaker 02

It's a dog movie, a rom com, and kind of a little bit of a Christmas movie too. So it's fun stuff.

• 49:54Dax Shepard?

  It's all in one, yeah.

• 49:55Speaker 02

It's all in one. Any of these things appeal to you?

• 49:57Dax Shepard?

You'd be dead inside if not one of those items of Christmas, romance, and puppies.

• 50:03Speaker 02

  Puppies?

• 50:04Dax Shepard?

Now, the scenes with like thirty dogs on the beach, did it take for an eternity? Was there so many dog wranglers and the little clickers?

• 50:11Speaker 02

There's varying levels of dog actors.

• 50:14Speaker 01

  Like humans.

• 50:14Speaker 02

There are scenes where they're like establishing dog beach. They had the dogs do this and that. And there's always one dog that's like, I mean, Gus is a pro.

• 50:23Dax Shepard?

  One and done.

• 50:24Speaker 02

  Gus has got this.

• 50:24Dax Shepard?

  One and done.

• 50:25Speaker 01

  Gus is a decaprio.

• 50:26Speaker 02

Sometimes there'll be a dog that's like a dog background actor. That's not an actor really. They're more of like a show dog or something like that.

• 50:32Speaker 01

He's an extra. Let's be real.

• 50:33Speaker 02

So they're not as experienced. And so maybe it took a little longer, but it was good. I would say it can be challenging to act a scene and then the dog has to do blocking. And the dog trainers are there and they're like, go with, go with. And then the dog's like, but there's a sausage over here.

• 50:51Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 50:52Speaker 02

So we would always have to have sausages in our pockets to be like,

• 50:56Dax Shepard?

Smart. I got the guts too.

• 50:58Speaker 02

Gus, I've got a sausage too.

• 50:59Speaker 01

Oh, wow. This is a lot.

• 51:00Speaker 02

It's important. Cats are not as good at acting.

• 51:03Speaker 01

  It's not their sport.

• 51:04Speaker 02

As much as I love them, they're very smart, but they're like, we do what we want to do. I had one scene on New Girl where there was a million cats on my car. And that was crazy. The cats just will not, they don't.

• 51:14Speaker 01

  Cooperate.

• 51:15Speaker 02

  No, they're all just like.

• 51:17Dax Shepard?

  Hence the term herding cats.

• 51:18Speaker 02

  Herding cats is hard.

• 51:20Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 51:20Speaker 02

Cats just do what they want to do. They're very smart, but they do what they want to do. And dogs.

• 51:24Dax Shepard?

They want approval. They're more like me.

• 51:26Speaker 02

My cats aren't super food motivated. There aren't that many things. I have one cat that's like, no, if you have a treat, she's suspicious of you. She thinks you're trying to get her.

• 51:35Speaker 01

  Again, smart.

• 51:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:38Speaker 01

It's like, you know, not supposed to get in a car with a stranger when they give you candy.

• 51:42Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 51:42Dax Shepard?

  Cat knows intuitively something stinks.

• 51:44Speaker 02

Pickle's not getting in the car.

• 51:45Speaker 01

Did you feel a little stressed reentering the Christmas movie space since you are in an iconic one?

• 51:50Speaker 02

Well, it happened by accident because when I read the script, I was just like, it's a cute rom com. And I didn't even like notice that it was sort of set during Christmas.

• 51:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 51:57Speaker 02

Because it wasn't like the front and center thing. It's more in the realm of Love Actually or Die Hard where there's Christmas in the background.

• 52:04Dax Shepard?

  It's the context.

• 52:05Speaker 02

But it's not about Santa Claus or elves or Christmas specific characters.

• 52:11Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 52:11Speaker 02

And it's not a Christmas specific plot line. Just happens to have these nice little cozy Christmas vibes.

• 52:17Speaker 01

  Ooh, I like that.

• 52:18Speaker 02

That's how I ended up. But I'm like, you know what? It's great to have this little sprinkling.

• 52:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, I like that.

• 52:24Speaker 02

It adds. Because you want to have things that take place during the time when you're reminded how important your loved ones are.

• 52:31Speaker 01

Oh, it's true, yeah. Is it a tearjerker?

• 52:33Speaker 02

A little bit, but it's mainly funny, but it has a few tear jerky moments.

• 52:37Speaker 01

  Okay, for those.

• 52:38Dax Shepard?

You want a couple of tears jerked out?

• 52:40Speaker 01

  Yeah, I'm ready. Jerked out.

• 52:43Speaker 02

  You might have a tear.

• 52:44Dax Shepard?

  Removed.

• 52:45Speaker 01

  Okay, I'll let you know.

• 52:46Speaker 02

But you're not going to be like crying the whole movie. There's no.

• 52:48Dax Shepard?

And Charlie Cox is a classic, babe.

• 52:51Speaker 02

  Classic.

• 52:52Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I think that'll be working for you a lot in between the cries.

• 52:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 52:55Dax Shepard?

I think you'll be getting excited for Charlie Cox.

• 52:58Speaker 02

  It's a good rom com.

• 52:59Speaker 01

I love a rom com, A Dying Breed.

• 53:01Speaker 02

  We need more.

• 53:02Speaker 01

  I agree.

• 53:03Speaker 02

  We need more.

• 53:03Speaker 01

  We need more.

• 53:04Dax Shepard?

  They're working the marketplace.

• 53:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 53:05Dax Shepard?

It's weird there's not more. Now, I'm going to ask you an annoying question I think probably everyone does. But because I'm friends with Jake, I just feel like clearly they're going to want you guys to do that show again.

• 53:15Speaker 02

  Right.

• 53:15Dax Shepard?

Would you ever do that show?

• 53:16Speaker 02

  I would, yeah.

• 53:17Speaker 01

  It's so good.

• 53:18Speaker 02

I don't know if Jake would if it were down the street from his house. He would be like, I'll show up twice a week.

• 53:23Dax Shepard?

  I'll give you 12 hours a week.

• 53:25Speaker 01

We didn't ask him, we should have asked him.

• 53:26Dax Shepard?

Yeah, maybe that's what I should have done.

• 53:28Speaker 01

We have to ask Max. We'll get them all.

• 53:29Dax Shepard?

  We'll get them lined up.

• 53:31Speaker 02

If you guys get them lined up.

• 53:32Dax Shepard?

But it's probably as big as it ever was when it was out, yeah?

• 53:35Speaker 02

  I think bigger.

• 53:35Dax Shepard?

  Bigger, right?

• 53:36Speaker 02

We had a huge opening and then we were like fighting baseball because they had the baseball contract on Fox. We had like all this traction and then they kept having to take us off for a week because baseball and there was a lot of stuff like that where we got a little bit slowed down and in the network TV world. It was like one of the first years that you were putting things on Netflix too. Because they put our show on Netflix the day after it aired. So we couldn't actually always see really our real ratings because a lot of people were watching on Netflix.

• 54:06Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 54:07Speaker 02

I thought it was such a smart marketing move because then people ended up watching who missed it or weren't aware of it. They just see it up on there. So it's hard to even know exactly and then we were on for a long time, but it felt like we were just kind of chugging along.

• 54:20Dax Shepard?

I think they're good at convincing all of us that the show's barely working. The whole six years on Parenthood is like, I don't know if we're gonna bring you back, all six years.

• 54:27Speaker 02

The whole time I kept being like, I think it's a really big hit. There's not a day it goes by. People tell me it means so much to them and then they're like, ah, I don't know. It was definitely a weird transition time in network television.

• 54:41Speaker 01

What's the name of the game in the show?

• 54:43Speaker 02

  True American.

• 54:44Speaker 01

Yes, True American. Have they made that into a real game?

• 54:48Speaker 02

They should, but one of our writers, it was a game that she played with friends in college, but it was actually just a physical game of strength. And a bunch of like her guy friends would like kind of play this. And then when they introduced it, it didn't really have instructions. At first it was like, they play True American. So we just kind of improvised most of it. To seem opaque, to seem like it was a game that was really weird.

• 55:12Speaker 01

Had no rules, made up rules.

• 55:15Speaker 02

And then people started trying to impose the rules on after the fact, which I was like, it's kind of a dangerous thing, but kind of great.

• 55:20Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 55:21Speaker 02

  I'm in.

• 55:22Speaker 01

  So good.

• 55:22Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 55:23Speaker 01

  What a great show.

• 55:24Dax Shepard?

  Are we gonna sing?

• 55:25Speaker 01

  I think we are.

• 55:26Speaker 02

Yeah, well, so wait. I will. I want to say that you guys really like willed this in because I kept trying to be like, I haven't practiced. You're like, we don't care.

• 55:35Speaker 01

  I know.

• 55:35Speaker 02

And you're like, we'll get you, someone to accompany you. And I was like, well, you said, could you find a keyboard player? And I was like, well, I don't have. Time and you're like, we got one.

• 55:43Speaker 01

Yeah. Look, we forced you to do this.

• 55:46Speaker 02

Well, I was like, they want it this much, then I'll do it.

• 55:49Dax Shepard?

  It's Christmas.

• 55:50Speaker 01

  It's Christmas.

• 55:52Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and I was listening to She and Him's Christmas, A Very Christmas.

• 55:55Speaker 01

  My favorite.

• 55:57Dax Shepard?

A Very She and Him Christmas I was listening to this morning, the whole time I was researching, yeah.

• 56:01Speaker 01

Yeah, you're gonna see a DM from me that's like, I love it.

• 56:04Speaker 02

Oh wait, I'll give you my phone number because I erased Instagram from my phone.

• 56:08Speaker 01

  Smart.

• 56:09Speaker 02

So I'm not doom scrolling all the time.

• 56:10Speaker 01

  Smart.

• 56:11Speaker 02

It really, I have so much time now. I mean, no offense to Instagram, there's lots of great things about it. But I just erased it and I was like, you know what, anyone who needs to get in touch with me will be able to get in touch with me. And I just erased it from my phone and I realized there's a whole world that's there. And I already TikTok. I still watch YouTube because it's long form.

• 56:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:30Speaker 02

And I like to like learn things. A lot of times they're like educational stuff.

• 56:34Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 56:35Speaker 02

But the doom scrolling, because I spent two hours watching cat videos.

• 56:38Dax Shepard?

I know. I'm telling myself the second we don't do this show that I'm gonna leave.

• 56:42Speaker 01

I know, that's how I feel, but then it's like there's gonna be something else.

• 56:45Speaker 02

But I have someone else post for me.

• 56:47Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 56:48Speaker 02

So I'm still active and I still do all the stuff to post, like I take pictures and stuff.

• 56:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 56:53Speaker 02

And I say what to post, but I'm not scrolling. It's not affecting my time and personal life.

• 57:00Dax Shepard?

I moved it to like the last page on my phone, so I gotta go through it, but that hasn't slowed me down in the way I was hoping.

• 57:06Speaker 02

Oh, I did so many things. I was like, and I would break through everyone. I downloaded another app that was supposed to limit it. It'd be like, you're blocked, and I'd just get around it.

• 57:15Speaker 01

  Like override.

• 57:16Dax Shepard?

Sure, sure, sure. Pick up another device, yeah.

• 57:18Speaker 02

I'd be like, you have to want it.

• 57:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 57:20Speaker 02

So I had to realize that for me, Instagram was, and TikTok, so addictive that I had to take it off my phone.

• 57:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 57:27Speaker 01

Wait, I have to ask one more thing before we sing because it just reminded me. What's on your Christmas dinner?

• 57:33Speaker 02

Ooh, table. Ooh, plate. Okay. I like chicken.

• 57:37Speaker 01

  I like chicken.

• 57:38Speaker 02

You know, like a good roast chicken?

• 57:40Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, beautiful roasted, too.

• 57:41Speaker 02

I like a roasted potato. I love all the roasted vegetables.

• 57:44Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 57:45Speaker 02

I love roasted beets and all this kind of winter vegetables. I like a roasted potato better than a mashed potato.

• 57:51Speaker 01

  OK, yeah, with skin on.

• 57:53Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 57:53Speaker 01

  Skin on.

• 57:54Speaker 02

It's crispy. I like crispy, crispy, almost fried.

• 57:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 57:57Speaker 02

It's called roasted, but we know.

• 57:59Dax Shepard?

  But it's a

• 57:59Speaker 02

There's enough oil on that and it's hot enough that it is basically fried. I like a good salad.

• 58:05Speaker 01

I believe salad belongs on the table.

• 58:07Speaker 02

To be enjoyed with all the roasted things. I'm not turning my nose up at any of the other Christmas meats or a salmon.

• 58:14Speaker 01

  OK, wow.

• 58:15Dax Shepard?

You were pescatarian for a minute.

• 58:17Speaker 02

I was vegetarian and then pescatarian. And then I realized I'm allergic to like a lot of the fake meat things. Almost every protein powder I can't eat.

• 58:27Dax Shepard?

  Oh, really?

• 58:28Speaker 02

This is from whey protein, which I can eat a little bit, but my fingers become cracked.

• 58:33Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 58:33Speaker 02

And I noticed that when I stopped eating whey protein, it goes away.

• 58:37Dax Shepard?

Have you tried a whey isolate?

• 58:39Speaker 02

Oh, maybe that's what I have to do.

• 58:40Dax Shepard?

That's what you need to do. Because I can't have whey and whey isolate, no problem.

• 58:45Speaker 02

OK, you know what I can do is bone broth protein.

• 58:47Dax Shepard?

  OK, that's great.

• 58:48Speaker 02

And they have like chocolate flavor, which I mean tastes just like a regular protein powder. But I'll try the isolate. And I can't have pea protein. I'm really allergic to that. I can't have soy protein. I'm allergic to that. Pretty much all the vegetarian things were challenging and then I was not getting enough protein. So now I do eat meats.

• 59:05Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 59:05Speaker 02

  Sustainably.

• 59:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:09Speaker 02

  And then for desserts.

• 59:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:12Speaker 02

  I like cookies. I'm a cookie. We thought you're a cookie monster.

• 59:15Speaker 01

  Cookies, yes.

• 59:16Speaker 02

Do I have one? I might have to add you. I've got a cookie group chat.

• 59:20Speaker 01

  What?

• 59:21Dax Shepard?

  Oh, my God.

• 59:21Speaker 01

  That's like recipes flowing?

• 59:23Speaker 02

No, it's all the places we've gotten good cookies.

• 59:26Dax Shepard?

  That's even better for you.

• 59:26Speaker 01

  That's way better.

• 59:27Dax Shepard?

Yeah, because you like to shop.

• 59:28Speaker 01

  Yeah, I love shopping.

• 59:29Speaker 02

And Cozmates where you can, you know, DoorDash.

• 59:32Dax Shepard?

Get a ton of them, yeah.

• 59:33Speaker 02

  Get cookies delivered.

• 59:36Speaker 01

You know, Rob makes an incredible Christmas cookie.

• 59:39Speaker 02

  Really?

• 59:39Speaker 01

Yes, he'll have to give you the recipe. Sorry, Rob, but you have to give us over your recipe.

• 59:43Speaker 02

Is it like a cutout cookie?

• 59:46Speaker 04

No, it's white chocolate cranberry cookie.

• 59:49Speaker 02

  Delicious.

• 59:50Speaker 01

It's so good. You love him, too.

• 59:52Dax Shepard?

I even cheat a little bit.

• 59:53Speaker 01

Yeah, you cheat on your gluten with those.

• 59:55Speaker 02

You might have a piece of the bread.

• 59:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:57Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I'll have a little piece of it. Yeah, yeah, I will. I will.

• 59:59Speaker 02

  Toast it.

• 1:00:00Dax Shepard?

I definitely want to show my love to your mother.

• 1:00:03Speaker 02

You don't have to. I remembered that you were avoiding the gluten, but I still brought the bread anyway.

• 1:00:08Dax Shepard?

  No, I'm glad you did.

• 1:00:09Speaker 02

But she was like, one of them will eat it.

• 1:00:11Speaker 01

  Eat it.

• 1:00:12Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:00:12Speaker 02

Yeah, and you can share it. And you know what? If you don't think you can eat all this, slice it and then put it in the freezer. And you know that thing about the bread, that when you freeze it.

• 1:00:22Dax Shepard?

  It lowers its glycemic.

• 1:00:23Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:00:24Dax Shepard?

  Index.

• 1:00:25Speaker 02

  It's really amazing.

• 1:00:26Dax Shepard?

Kristen freezes all of our bread before.

• 1:00:28Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:00:29Dax Shepard?

  Family eats it.

• 1:00:29Speaker 02

Oh, so you can do that. That's what she actually mostly does. She makes her own bread and then we'll freeze it a lot.

• 1:00:34Speaker 01

  Smart.

• 1:00:35Dax Shepard?

All these sourdough people are the same. Takes over your whole life. Like, our freezer is just full of sliced frozen bread. Yeah, yeah. We're the beneficiaries of it.

• 1:00:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:00:43Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 1:00:44Dax Shepard?

Okay, we're gonna sing. Yeah, we're gonna sing a song.

• 1:00:46Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:00:47Speaker 02

  All right. Yes.

• 1:01:50Speaker 02

Here we are as in olden days, happy golden days of yore.

• 1:02:04Speaker 02

Faithful friends who are dear to us gather near to us once more.

• 1:02:18Speaker 02

And through the years, we all will be together

• 1:02:25Speaker 02

if the fates allow. Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.

• 1:02:43Speaker 02

And have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

• 1:03:07Speaker 02

  And there's a cricket.

• 1:03:08Speaker 01

I know. You guys are cricket joint in the middle.

• 1:03:12Speaker 02

It was really sweet. It was kind of like, it's nighttime, right?

• 1:03:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:03:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, the crickets are here.

• 1:03:16Speaker 02

Do you guys know where this song came from?

• 1:03:18Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 1:03:18Speaker 01

  Tell us.

• 1:03:19Speaker 02

It was in "Meet Me in St. Louis", and the first person to sing it was Judy Garland. And it's like, heart wrenching. Please watch.

• 1:03:31Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:03:32Speaker 02

She sings it, and it's like the family's gonna move away from St. Louis

• 1:03:36Dax Shepard?

  Oh, no.

• 1:03:37Speaker 02

to New York City. Everyone's sad about it, and she's singing it to her baby sister to say like, it's gonna be okay.

• 1:03:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:44Speaker 02

It's so beautiful. Watch it. I'm crying. Tears are behind my eyes just thinking about it.

• 1:03:50Speaker 01

  You guys, that was beautiful.

• 1:03:52Speaker 02

Thank you. Thank you so much. It was like amazing. I have one flub. Amazing. No.

• 1:03:57Speaker 01

This is how musicians are. They think they're wonderful.

• 1:04:00Dax Shepard?

  Never good enough.

• 1:04:01Speaker 02

I don't believe in like, not having little things that are different. You know what I mean?

• 1:04:05Speaker 01

  I agree. That's the beauty.

• 1:04:07Speaker 02

  Yeah, there was no flubs.

• 1:04:08Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:04:09Speaker 02

  Birthmarks.

• 1:04:09Speaker 01

  It was a birthmark.

• 1:04:11Speaker 02

We record in ways so we can't fix mistakes. So I believe in that. Like, I like that.

• 1:04:17Speaker 05

Yeah, that's what we did at My Last Record. That's what we did on Wolf's stuff.

• 1:04:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:04:20Speaker 05

  It's just a take.

• 1:04:20Speaker 01

  Well, it sounds so good.

• 1:04:22Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:04:22Speaker 02

Yeah. The take is the take.

• 1:04:23Speaker 01

  The take is a take.

• 1:04:24Dax Shepard?

  You make that perfection.

• 1:04:26Speaker 02

I've sung backup or guessed it on people's records. And I see how a lot of people do it is that they fix every line. It sounds perfect, but it all of a sudden doesn't sound as much like

• 1:04:37Dax Shepard?

  As interesting.

• 1:04:37Speaker 02

  You.

• 1:04:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:38Speaker 02

If you don't have the musical through line, like, there's a story to that performance.

• 1:04:42Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes.

• 1:04:43Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 1:04:44Speaker 05

I feel that way with click.

• 1:04:45Speaker 02

I, no, we don't use click, ever.

• 1:04:47Speaker 05

And when you're seeing a show live.

• 1:04:49Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:04:49Speaker 05

The record clicks. Sometimes I get it. I'm in a session and I'm like, okay, at least we can punch in, I guess. It's simple to keep everyone on the same click track. When you see something live to click, it changes the whole, my insides just go like, ugh.

• 1:05:02Speaker 01

Same. I don't like click. I also don't like click. Yeah, I just don't like it.

• 1:05:08Dax Shepard?

She has a shirt with click in a big circle.

• 1:05:11Speaker 02

  You don't need it.

• 1:05:12Dax Shepard?

You don't need it. They didn't have it before.

• 1:05:14Speaker 01

They didn't have it before you guys were talking about it and they don't have it.

• 1:05:17Dax Shepard?

Jimi Hendrix, he wasn't using click.

• 1:05:19Speaker 02

  He wasn't using click?

• 1:05:19Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 1:05:20Speaker 01

  He didn't use click.

• 1:05:21Dax Shepard?

  He was using his soul.

• 1:05:21Speaker 01

  Nobody needs click.

• 1:05:22Dax Shepard?

I'm gonna state the most obvious thing. It's been said all the time about your singing, but it's so just true, which is it's so nostalgic. Like, I think I'm hearing

• 1:05:31Speaker 01

There's something very wistful about it.

• 1:05:32Dax Shepard?

This song from 70 years ago.

• 1:05:34Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:05:34Dax Shepard?

  It's, yes.

• 1:05:35Speaker 01

  You're a beautiful, incredible voice.

• 1:05:37Dax Shepard?

  It's very timeless, warm.

• 1:05:38Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 1:05:38Dax Shepard?

Yeah, nostalgic. It kind of is bigger than the sound somehow. I just love it. Yeah.

• 1:05:44Speaker 01

  We feel very grateful.

• 1:05:45Dax Shepard?

So glad we forced you to do it.

• 1:05:46Speaker 02

You know what? I'm glad that I got to work with you and I'm glad I got to sing for you guys.

• 1:05:50Dax Shepard?

And you'll have a little bit more spring in your Christmas step now.

• 1:05:53Speaker 02

I feel good and I love that song.

• 1:05:55Speaker 01

  Such a beautiful song.

• 1:05:56Speaker 02

  I'm happy to sing it.

• 1:05:57Speaker 01

Thank you, Jacob, for coming back.

• 1:06:00Dax Shepard?

  Yes, again, again.

• 1:06:01Speaker 02

  You're amazing.

• 1:06:02Dax Shepard?

All right, well, Merry Christmas to both of you guys.

• 1:06:04Speaker 01

  Merry Christmas.

• 1:06:06Dax Shepard?

  This has been so fun.

• 1:06:06Speaker 01

We get support from Instagram teen accounts. So, we talk a lot on this show about how the world is different now than when we were growing up, and one of the biggest differences is obviously social media. And I think a lot of people wonder, okay, what's actually being done to make it safer for teenagers?

• 1:10:36Speaker 01

  Which is a fair question.

• 1:10:38Dax Shepard?

Yeah, so Instagram has got something called teen accounts, and they come with automatic protections built in by default. So, anyone between 13 and 17 is automatically placed into this experience. They get age-appropriate content settings, contact limits, so that by default, only people they're already connected to can message them. And time management tools, daily time limit reminders, and also sleep mode that mutes notifications from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM.

• 1:11:04Speaker 01

  Genius.

• 1:11:05Dax Shepard?

Right? And here's the thing, for anyone under 16, a parent has to give permission to change any of those settings to be less strict. The guardrails are on and Instagram keeps building new safety features to create age appropriate experiences for teens.

• 1:11:20Speaker 01

I am really glad Instagram's helping to give parents peace of mind with teen accounts.

• 1:11:36Dax Shepard?

I sure hope there weren't any mistakes in that episode, but we'll find out when my mom, Mrs. Monica, comes in and tells us what was wrong.

• 1:11:45Dax Shepard?

Hi, Merry Christmas time. Look at these fun slacks you're wearing.

• 1:11:51Speaker 01

Yes, I'm wearing cozy slacks wherever you're gonna come sit. I'm wearing leggings for the winter. These are leggings.

• 1:11:58Dax Shepard?

  But they're a jog suit?

• 1:12:00Speaker 01

  No, this is a sweater.

• 1:12:01Dax Shepard?

Oh, but they have a gusset and a waistband?

• 1:12:03Speaker 01

  Yeah, they have a waistband.

• 1:12:04Dax Shepard?

Oh, okay. So there's a difference between leggings and joggers or pants?

• 1:12:10Speaker 01

Yeah, these are tight. They're leggings. They're like...

• 1:12:14Dax Shepard?

Oh, I thought leggings. What are these?

• 1:12:18Speaker 01

  Bike shorts?

• 1:12:19Dax Shepard?

No, no, where the leg is like, start, starts here and ends here.

• 1:12:24Speaker 01

  Oh, leg warmers, maybe?

• 1:12:26Dax Shepard?

  Leggings?

• 1:12:28Speaker 01

No, this, this is a legging.

• 1:12:32Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:12:33Speaker 01

  A legging is a, um...

• 1:12:35Dax Shepard?

  Stockings.

• 1:12:36Speaker 01

  Oh, stockings.

• 1:12:38Dax Shepard?

Stockings, I think, is what I thought.

• 1:12:40Speaker 01

  Wears?

• 1:12:41Dax Shepard?

  Who wears them?

• 1:12:42Speaker 01

  Mrs. Claus.

• 1:12:43Dax Shepard?

Does she wear stockings? Probably. What do people wear under their skirts? Stockings, tights?

• 1:12:51Speaker 01

Tights. Stockings are tights. They just, right, don't, I don't know.

• 1:12:57Dax Shepard?

I'll tell you this, though, Mrs. Claus... I think generally horny.

• 1:13:00Speaker 01

Okay, I looked it up. Stockings are close fitting garments covering the foot and leg from the foot to the thigh or waist. Typically made from sheer nylon silk or other stretchable materials for fashion, warmth, or medical reasons.

• 1:13:12Dax Shepard?

  Medical reasons?

• 1:13:13Speaker 01

Distinct from connected pantyhose and also refer to large sock shaped bags for Christmas gifts. That's why I was saying Mrs. Claus. I knew stock, you know, the chimney was hung and there were stockings with care or something.

• 1:13:26Dax Shepard?

  That stocking stuffers, right?

• 1:13:27Speaker 01

  Whatever.

• 1:13:28Speaker 04

Those aren't, those aren't leggings though. Those are like two.

• 1:13:31Speaker 01

  These are leggings.

• 1:13:32Speaker 04

  They are leggings?

• 1:13:33Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:13:33Dax Shepard?

See, good. I'm glad you had the same.

• 1:13:35Speaker 04

I thought I was on your side when I was saying this. Otherwise, I wouldn't have brought it up.

• 1:13:39Dax Shepard?

What did you think leggings were?

• 1:13:41Speaker 04

I, just tighter versions of that.

• 1:13:43Dax Shepard?

And all the way up like a pant?

• 1:13:45Speaker 01

  They are.

• 1:13:46Dax Shepard?

  I know they are.

• 1:13:47Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:13:48Dax Shepard?

For some reason leggings in mine didn't have a waistband and pockets.

• 1:13:52Speaker 01

  There's no.

• 1:13:53Dax Shepard?

I know, but you know, you could have pockets.

• 1:13:55Speaker 01

No, leggings have a waistband. They're all the way up like you have Lululemon leggings.

• 1:14:02Speaker 04

  They're elastic normally?

• 1:14:04Speaker 01

  Elastic. This is, this is.

• 1:14:06Dax Shepard?

  Do they call them Lululeggings?

• 1:14:08Speaker 01

  They should.

• 1:14:10Speaker 01

Um, okay, well, it's our Christmas episode for the core team. Here he comes. The reindeer.

• 1:14:19Dax Shepard?

  People complained.

• 1:14:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:20Dax Shepard?

I know we're over, but people complained.

• 1:14:27Speaker 01

  What are you doing?

• 1:14:32Dax Shepard?

But now it's a vault to just.

• 1:14:36Speaker 01

  Oh, my God. People complained?

• 1:14:40Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I didn't do it last year.

• 1:14:41Speaker 01

  Oh, last year.

• 1:14:43Dax Shepard?

Yeah, somehow I forgot to do Elvis last year.

• 1:14:45Speaker 01

  Shocking.

• 1:14:46Dax Shepard?

And four people complained and a million people were grateful. So I'm gonna definitely make.

• 1:14:51Speaker 01

  So you bridge the gap.

• 1:14:52Speaker 04

I thought you meant people complained that you would do it and you're gonna do it anyways.

• 1:14:56Dax Shepard?

So you would imagine that would be a complaint, but I have to say I've never read that complaint. And people are willing, they're free flying with their complaints as we know.

• 1:15:04Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:15:05Dax Shepard?

  You know that.

• 1:15:06Speaker 01

  I, we all know that.

• 1:15:07Dax Shepard?

So can we ask, um, what everyone's success rate was because I've been very unsuccessful.

• 1:15:14Speaker 01

  With our gifts?

• 1:15:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, like shipping.

• 1:15:17Speaker 01

I was, okay, I'll go first. Ladies first.

• 1:15:20Dax Shepard?

  Ladies first.

• 1:15:21Speaker 01

Um, I was very nervous about one of them. It was, I ordered it. Over a week ago, from a place that's very close by. So that was a mistake. I should have just gone. When I called, they were like, oh, we could have just messaged it to you. And I was like, okay, I wish I knew that. Um, and it wasn't coming, it wasn't coming. And then I kept getting the FedEx stickers where it came and left and came and left.

• 1:15:48Dax Shepard?

  Required a signature?

• 1:15:50Speaker 01

Yes, and I kept trying to change it and I couldn't change it.

• 1:15:53Dax Shepard?

They should outlaw signature required. It's my number one grievance.

• 1:15:56Speaker 04

Do you ever try signing it and then writing on it, please leave this?

• 1:15:59Speaker 01

I have done it, it doesn't work. It doesn't work, they have to follow the law.

• 1:16:04Dax Shepard?

Well, they're not willing to lose their job over making you happy. I know, as you could declare on FedEx and UPS and USPS, you see, that I'm like, I'm done.

• 1:16:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:14Dax Shepard?

  I don't give a fuck if it's stolen.

• 1:16:15Speaker 01

I think instead of it defaulting to it is a signature, it should default to there's no signature and you click it if you are someone who's like, I need this.

• 1:16:26Dax Shepard?

I think whoever you bought it from, they like to require signatures so that they don't ever get blamed.

• 1:16:32Speaker 01

Yeah, that's what, that's what it is, but I'm saying it should be reversed. So anyway, it, I, I canceled an appointment to stay at home on the day that I was like, it's supposed to arrive today.

• 1:16:45Dax Shepard?

You sat at home all day long.

• 1:16:46Speaker 01

I did. And it did arrive, thank God.

• 1:16:50Dax Shepard?

  Ah.

• 1:16:51Speaker 01

  So I signed for it.

• 1:16:52Dax Shepard?

It makes me think of the guy who knocks on the door and then they pull it open and he's still holding the handle on vacation. Christmas vacation, he's holding the, the gift from his boss he's been waiting for, but somehow he's holding, he's like cling, cling, cling, and then when they open, he's like holding that in the reed, I think. It's like, I'm sorry, forgot to do this.

• 1:17:12Speaker 01

  Your favorite movie?

• 1:17:14Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, Christmas movie.

• 1:17:16Speaker 01

  Your favorite Christmas movie?

• 1:17:16Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Well, my situation was I, uh, ordered you a bunch of things that were coming from Nyack.

• 1:17:23Speaker 01

  Nyack?

• 1:17:24Dax Shepard?

  Nyack.

• 1:17:24Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:17:25Dax Shepard?

  And.

• 1:17:26Speaker 04

  Newark.

• 1:17:26Speaker 01

  Newark.

• 1:17:27Dax Shepard?

Newark, the Newark airport. And I had loads of time. When I ordered it, they were gonna be here like two weeks ago.

• 1:17:36Dax Shepard?

That's an exaggeration. A week and a half ago. And then it was like, hey, it's gonna be later, it's gonna be later. Then, hey, we're not even gonna send one of these things. Like, we can't find this. Yeah, that's done.

• 1:17:48Speaker 01

Was it a limited edition item?

• 1:17:50Dax Shepard?

Well, it's a no edition item.

• 1:17:52Speaker 01

  Oh, I really want it.

• 1:17:53Dax Shepard?

They had it on their website, but they didn't have it in their stockroom. So, okay, so I ordered those, and those are ironically, if we believe the app, is gonna be here at 2:30.

• 1:18:05Speaker 01

  Oh, wow. That's exciting.

• 1:18:08Dax Shepard?

Exactly when we're done recording. After all this me watching it every day and tracking it every day.

• 1:18:13Speaker 01

  I know, it's stressful.

• 1:18:13Dax Shepard?

But then even worse, and this is my fault, and this applies to both of you, is then I then ordered a lot of stuff off Amazon. And what I fucking, it's my fault. I gotta double check when I order stuff.

• 1:18:27Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:18:27Dax Shepard?

Cause I order stuff to Tennessee so much.

• 1:18:30Speaker 01

  Oh, no. Yeah.

• 1:18:32Dax Shepard?

So yesterday, I started getting all those alerts you get from Amazon, like in your email. Deliver, deliver, deliver. And I'm like, great. I go outside, nothing there. I'm like, what the fuck? Open it up to take a picture. Um, that's, that's Mount Juliet.

• 1:18:43Speaker 01

  Oh, shit.

• 1:18:44Dax Shepard?

So about five things are in Nashville for you.

• 1:18:48Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:18:49Dax Shepard?

Three things for you, but yours were just cute things to make this thing better. But it is heartbreaking, because I really thought it was something cute. So anyways, I entered this having really failed, and I'm ashamed and embarrassed.

• 1:19:00Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:19:00Dax Shepard?

  That I failed everyone.

• 1:19:02Speaker 01

Now, are you gonna tell us what they are?

• 1:19:03Dax Shepard?

Yeah, so that's my question. Your shit gets here, you know, after we start recording, then our next guest.

• 1:19:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:19:11Dax Shepard?

But I feel like I should tell you?

• 1:19:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:19:14Speaker 04

Okay. You could just like write on a piece of paper, or print it off, picture of it.

• 1:19:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:19Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:19:19Dax Shepard?

If I just hand you my phone?

• 1:19:21Speaker 04

  I mean, that works.

• 1:19:22Dax Shepard?

Emails from, here's a clue from Bergdorf.

• 1:19:26Speaker 01

  Oh, shit.

• 1:19:27Dax Shepard?

  Just hand you a.

• 1:19:28Speaker 01

  That is from Newark Airport.

• 1:19:33Speaker 01

  Exciting.

• 1:19:34Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:19:34Speaker 01

No, I, I, this is great. That means I have presents to come.

• 1:19:38Dax Shepard?

You do. And then also, when I return home from Christmas vacation.

• 1:19:42Speaker 01

  More presents.

• 1:19:42Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I'll be bringing back all this stuff. I'll describe to you some of the cute things I got.

• 1:19:47Speaker 01

And Rob, how did it go for you?

• 1:19:49Speaker 04

Mine was good. Uh, one of them's, one of them's a big swing.

• 1:19:52Speaker 01

  Oh, exciting.

• 1:19:54Dax Shepard?

  What it means for me.

• 1:19:55Speaker 01

  Which one?

• 1:19:57Dax Shepard?

  It'll, it'll be obvious.

• 1:19:58Speaker 04

  Yeah, it'll be obvious.

• 1:19:59Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:20:00Speaker 01

  What if it's a boyfriend?

• 1:20:03Dax Shepard?

What if it's, what if it's? It's a mold of his penis.

• 1:20:06Speaker 01

Wow, that is a big swing.

• 1:20:09Dax Shepard?

Figuratively and literally, I heard from Natalie.

• 1:20:14Dax Shepard?

So who goes first, the youngest? How do we do it?

• 1:20:17Speaker 01

  Yeah, Rob should go first.

• 1:20:18Speaker 04

All right, well, I, mine's two parts, so I'm gonna view your gift.

• 1:20:21Speaker 01

No, you receive. Yeah, you should receive first. Do you want to receive from Dax or I? Ooh, big question.

• 1:20:28Speaker 04

I just close my eyes and point, so that I don't have to pick.

• 1:20:31Speaker 01

  At random?

• 1:20:33Dax Shepard?

  Youngest goes first.

• 1:20:34Speaker 01

  Okay, so all.

• 1:20:35Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, give them your present.

• 1:20:37Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:20:37Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:20:38Speaker 01

  Give Robbie his present.

• 1:20:42Speaker 01

There's writing, there's writing on the back of that card.

• 1:20:46Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:20:49Speaker 04

Ooh, that's a good sign. This gift is in honor of friend of the pod Curtis Duffy.

• 1:20:56Dax Shepard?

  Oh, sneaky mouse.

• 1:20:59Speaker 01

  Christmas mouse? Squeak, squeak, squeak.

• 1:21:03Speaker 04

It's in a Nikki Keigho box.

• 1:21:04Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's a red herring.

• 1:21:06Speaker 04

That's nice wrapping paper, too, nice and thick.

• 1:21:08Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's paper source.

• 1:21:10Dax Shepard?

  Or reused that.

• 1:21:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:21:11Dax Shepard?

  Put that in a pile.

• 1:21:12Speaker 01

  It's a gift within a gift.

• 1:21:13Dax Shepard?

I love how many grandmas would go home from Christmas with a bunch of wrapping paper.

• 1:21:17Speaker 01

I know, and it's all creased up. I don't get it.

• 1:21:20Dax Shepard?

  It's not great.

• 1:21:23Speaker 04

So we've got a Max and Helen's hot sauce.

• 1:21:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:21:27Dax Shepard?

That's from your new favorite place?

• 1:21:29Speaker 01

Yes, okay, update, I got in.

• 1:21:31Dax Shepard?

  You got, she got in.

• 1:21:33Speaker 01

And it was so good. It was so good. I panicked as soon as I sat down that I was never gonna be able to get back in. So I was like, gotta order so many things.

• 1:21:45Dax Shepard?

We saw you post meal at Lily's, and when you were saying everything you ordered, at one point, I was like, shit, then four of them must have got in. And I was like, how, how many folks went? It's just you and Jess.

• 1:22:00Speaker 01

  Just me and Jess.

• 1:22:01Dax Shepard?

You had about seven entrees, right?

• 1:22:03Speaker 01

  We got a tuna melt.

• 1:22:06Speaker 01

Highly recommend the tuna melt. Oh my god, it was so good.

• 1:22:09Dax Shepard?

  Oh my tuna melt.

• 1:22:10Speaker 01

  Oh my tuna.

• 1:22:11Dax Shepard?

We agree tuna melt doesn't sound appetizing even though it can be appetizing.

• 1:22:15Speaker 01

To you, cuz you don't like fish. In general, I think, I think to a lot of people tuna melt sounds nice.

• 1:22:20Dax Shepard?

  It melted fish?

• 1:22:22Speaker 01

It's not, the fish itself isn't melted, there's cheese on it that's melted.

• 1:22:25Dax Shepard?

  I know, but tuna melt.

• 1:22:27Speaker 01

  You're biased on your.

• 1:22:29Speaker 04

There's cheese on the tuna melt?

• 1:22:31Speaker 01

Yes, that's what I mean. You've never had one?

• 1:22:32Dax Shepard?

  You've never had tuna melt?

• 1:22:33Speaker 04

  I don't like tuna either.

• 1:22:35Speaker 01

Oh my god, well, okay, not for either of you maybe.

• 1:22:37Dax Shepard?

Now, I do like a tuna fish.

• 1:22:39Speaker 04

  Well, I like raw tuna.

• 1:22:40Dax Shepard?

You can tuna guitar, but you cannot tuna fish.

• 1:22:43Speaker 01

Okay. Highly recommend the tuna melt. We got a ham and cheese omelet. That was an addition at the end. I wanted it.

• 1:22:51Dax Shepard?

Now, really quick, I would never, ever order a ham and cheese omelet from a place I've heard is great. Because how the fuck can you make it better? Like a ham, eggs, ham and cheese.

• 1:23:03Speaker 01

  No, it was, it was.

• 1:23:05Dax Shepard?

It was several standard deviations above.

• 1:23:07Speaker 01

Yeah, because the type of ham they were using, very thin, very tasty.

• 1:23:11Dax Shepard?

Was it a marron? Fluffy egg, too?

• 1:23:13Speaker 01

Fluffy egg. The cheese, I think, was Gruyere. That was a last minute add-on. That was like, okay, we've eaten, but we gotta try the ham and, we gotta try it. Okay, so we got a matzo ball soup, amazing. We got a, um, oh.

• 1:23:30Dax Shepard?

  We got a toast.

• 1:23:31Speaker 01

No, we got an egg sandwich, like the breakfast sandwich. They upsold us on the waffle. We were not gonna get a waffle, but they were like, do you want a waffle? Just like, start?

• 1:23:41Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:42Speaker 01

And we were like, uh, I was like, do we need to get that? And he was like, we're known for our waffles.

• 1:23:47Speaker 04

  Was it that good?

• 1:23:48Speaker 01

It was so good. I was so glad we had it. I don't even love, I don't even like waffles. I hate them. I like them, but I'm never ordering them. I'm never ordering them. I'm normally gonna go pancake over waffle.

• 1:24:01Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:24:02Speaker 01

And then hot chocolate, they're known for their hot chocolate. It's called Lily's Hot Chocolate.

• 1:24:06Dax Shepard?

  Oh my goodness.

• 1:24:08Speaker 01

  And, um.

• 1:24:08Speaker 04

Well, cuz Lily is Phil's daughter.

• 1:24:10Speaker 01

That's right. She runs and owns it with her husband. She was there. And then, um, and then an egg cream. Do not sleep on the egg cream.

• 1:24:22Dax Shepard?

Tell me what an egg cream is.

• 1:24:24Speaker 01

  Oh my god.

• 1:24:25Dax Shepard?

  Oh boy.

• 1:24:26Speaker 01

  Oh my god.

• 1:24:26Dax Shepard?

Do you need a? Second set of leggings.

• 1:24:28Speaker 01

Yeah, I need to go. I'm gonna get stockings tonight, then you'll really see stuff. This will see through. Do you know about egg creams?

• 1:24:38Speaker 04

  I don't think so.

• 1:24:39Speaker 01

Okay. They're a drink. They come in like a milkshake glass. And, but they, it's kind of like a milkshake.

• 1:24:47Dax Shepard?

  It's like a 50s thing, right?

• 1:24:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:24:49Speaker 04

  Eggnog?

• 1:24:50Speaker 01

No, it's like a milkshake mixed with a seltzer, kind of. Like, it's, it's almost bubbly, it's very light. Oh my god, it was so good. It was, Jess got it and I took a sip and I was like, oh no, I need one on the way out.

• 1:25:07Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:08Speaker 01

But I was so full, I didn't get one on the way out. But it was, don't sleep on that. Vanilla, we got vanilla, there's also a chocolate.

• 1:25:14Dax Shepard?

Okay. That's what, of all the things you mentioned, that's what has me most excited to go there.

• 1:25:18Speaker 01

  The egg cream?

• 1:25:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:19Speaker 01

  It's so good.

• 1:25:20Dax Shepard?

Cause I don't, I've never had an egg cream.

• 1:25:22Speaker 04

Well, can you talk about the waffle some more?

• 1:25:24Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:25:24Speaker 04

What kind of wa, what's up with the waffle?

• 1:25:26Speaker 01

  It was.

• 1:25:27Dax Shepard?

  I love a waffle.

• 1:25:27Speaker 04

  I do too.

• 1:25:28Dax Shepard?

  I love swear words.

• 1:25:31Speaker 01

It had like a yummy butter on top, it had like.

• 1:25:35Speaker 04

  Crispy?

• 1:25:36Speaker 01

Yeah, it was crispy. It was crispy but also thick and somehow fluffy in the middle, but crispy.

• 1:25:42Speaker 04

  Yeah, that's the best kind.

• 1:25:44Speaker 01

It was amazing. Anyway, highly recommend. I, it's, I know it's so annoying, cause it's 1800 hours, the wait, but.

• 1:25:52Dax Shepard?

Best 1800 hours you could ever spend?

• 1:25:54Speaker 01

I was happy that you're, you're at a risk for these restaurants that you go in and it's gonna be like, oh, it's like highfalutin diner food, which is not what you want when you go to a diner. You want diner food. And it was. It was like classic diner food, but everything just tasted better than it would at a regular diner, so. Man, oh man. Anyway, the hot sauce, we got the hot sauce too. Oh, we got home fries. That came with the hot sauce and it was so good, so. They sell that.

• 1:26:23Speaker 04

  Alright.

• 1:26:24Dax Shepard?

  Okay, next present.

• 1:26:25Speaker 04

And some of Mindy's hot chocolate, incredible.

• 1:26:29Dax Shepard?

  Mindy Callen has her own?

• 1:26:30Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:26:31Speaker 04

  This is Mindy from Chicago.

• 1:26:34Dax Shepard?

  Oh, oh, okay.

• 1:26:35Speaker 04

She has, it was a restaurant we all went to.

• 1:26:38Speaker 01

  That was amazing.

• 1:26:39Speaker 04

  And she moved into bakery.

• 1:26:42Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:26:43Speaker 04

And makes incredible hot chocolate and cookies and baked goods.

• 1:26:50Speaker 04

And let's see, some caramel, salted caramel.

• 1:26:53Speaker 01

  Caramel.

• 1:26:55Speaker 04

  Salted caramel.

• 1:26:56Speaker 01

  Please pronounce it correctly.

• 1:26:57Dax Shepard?

  Duck butter caramel.

• 1:26:58Speaker 04

  From where, what is?

• 1:27:00Speaker 01

It's just French. I don't know. These are from Bucatini. A really cute little shop in Echo Park. And everything there is so cute.

• 1:27:07Speaker 04

  I love salted caramels.

• 1:27:09Speaker 01

  I know that about you.

• 1:27:12Dax Shepard?

Now, are you saying caramel for her? What would you normally say? Salted.

• 1:27:16Speaker 04

  I honestly.

• 1:27:17Dax Shepard?

  You bounce back.

• 1:27:18Speaker 04

  Yeah, I bounce back.

• 1:27:19Dax Shepard?

  That's fair.

• 1:27:19Speaker 01

I think what you said, caramels, immediately off, right off the.

• 1:27:22Dax Shepard?

  And saw you.

• 1:27:24Speaker 01

  I didn't say.

• 1:27:25Speaker 04

I think I feel pretentious if I say caramel.

• 1:27:27Dax Shepard?

  Me too.

• 1:27:28Speaker 01

Wow, I find that so counterintuitive, and I like it.

• 1:27:30Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah. Caramel.

• 1:27:33Speaker 04

  These are nice.

• 1:27:34Speaker 01

Some serving spoons. Cause Rob is a, I don't know if people can tell, this is a food packaged gift.

• 1:27:40Speaker 04

Yeah, these are all great food items.

• 1:27:43Dax Shepard?

And look at those serving spoons.

• 1:27:44Speaker 04

  And then a card.

• 1:27:45Speaker 01

  There's a card.

• 1:27:46Speaker 04

Oh, Ever in Chicago, thank you.

• 1:27:50Speaker 01

Meal for Ever in Chicago. But I don't know when you're gonna go, cause I don't know when you're gonna be there.

• 1:27:54Dax Shepard?

He's down with Chicago. Just like you. Now he calls LA home.

• 1:27:58Speaker 04

  Well, that's true, but.

• 1:28:00Speaker 01

  He's still gonna go there.

• 1:28:01Speaker 04

No, I go, I just don't go during the high traffic times.

• 1:28:04Speaker 01

Yes. I reached out to them and I told them the situation. And I said, he's not gonna be there for the holidays, but when he's there next, can he reach out and can we do this? And they said yes.

• 1:28:13Speaker 04

  Awesome. Well, thank you.

• 1:28:14Speaker 01

  You're welcome.

• 1:28:15Dax Shepard?

  What restaurant?

• 1:28:16Speaker 04

  Ever, Curtis's restaurant.

• 1:28:18Speaker 01

  Curtis's restaurant.

• 1:28:19Dax Shepard?

I'd go, I don't even care about going to eat there. I'd go just in hopes of seeing him.

• 1:28:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:28:24Dax Shepard?

Cause I liked him so much.

• 1:28:24Speaker 01

  Great man.

• 1:28:25Dax Shepard?

  He was a good boy.

• 1:28:26Speaker 01

Remember when he taught us so about that in a martini glass or some sort of appetizer? But then he puts this very thin piece of sugar or something on top and then there's something, so it looks like it's floating. Do you guys remember that?

• 1:28:36Dax Shepard?

I mostly remember the family side. I mean, that's the memorable part.

• 1:28:39Speaker 01

That was a big part of that.

• 1:28:41Dax Shepard?

Yeah. That's why I wanna see him.

• 1:28:43Speaker 01

  I mainly remember the sugar.

• 1:28:45Speaker 04

  Thank you.

• 1:28:45Speaker 01

You're welcome. Okay, now Rob opens from back. Oh, or we wanna go round again?

• 1:28:50Speaker 04

  Round again.

• 1:28:51Dax Shepard?

  Well, that makes kinda sense.

• 1:28:54Speaker 04

I have a lot of siblings, so.

• 1:28:55Speaker 01

Yeah, why don't you go, Dad?

• 1:28:56Dax Shepard?

  So you're the next oldest.

• 1:28:57Speaker 01

  Who's gonna open from Rob?

• 1:28:59Dax Shepard?

What if like, I just, now I tell you?

• 1:29:02Speaker 04

Well, that's not, I gotta, there's something first before you open that.

• 1:29:05Speaker 01

Oh, I think mine is the big sweet.

• 1:29:08Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:29:09Speaker 04

  All right, you ready?

• 1:29:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:10Dax Shepard?

Oh, he's gotta go away. What if it's living?

• 1:29:13Speaker 01

  A dog! Oh my God.

• 1:29:19Speaker 03

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert if you dare.

• 1:30:35Speaker 01

Wait a minute. This would be a big swing.

• 1:30:37Dax Shepard?

Oh, my God. There's something on screen. What? There's a video?

• 1:30:40Speaker 05

  Monica, this is your dream.

• 1:30:42Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:30:42Speaker 05

A little bit about me. I am caring. I care a lot.

• 1:30:48Dax Shepard?

No, no, no. It's just a horn face.

• 1:30:50Speaker 05

  I'm ruggedly handsome.

• 1:30:52Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:30:54Speaker 05

I'm an intellectual. I know a lot about a lot of stuff. I have very high IQ. I even have a PhD.

• 1:31:02Speaker 01

  Oh, does he?

• 1:31:03Speaker 05

  Quite cultured.

• 1:31:04Dax Shepard?

  Then you wanted a boyfriend.

• 1:31:05Speaker 05

I think of myself as having an evolved masculinity. I've got a lot. I'm heavy-breasted. And by that, I don't mean that I have big boobs, but I have a lot of boobs.

• 1:31:19Dax Shepard?

She also got five or six penises.

• 1:31:21Speaker 05

Which is unusual for a man, I know, but it's still somehow masculine, or at least bovine. I think of myself as being very comfortable with women.

• 1:31:32Speaker 05

In power, as a matter of fact, I prefer women to be in power. I prefer them to be whipping me. In fact, I love to support.

• 1:31:44Dax Shepard?

  I knew it turned was.

• 1:31:44Speaker 05

I think of myself as a, as a bra, as just a, a, a big intergalactic bra. I am well over six feet tall.

• 1:31:54Speaker 01

  Oh, I like that.

• 1:31:55Speaker 05

Seven feet, in fact. I don't own a dog. I cannot stand dogs. I'm a cat person. I am a kitty cat person. I have a, uh, I, I mean, I'm a little bit country and I'm a little bit rock and roll. What I'm looking for is a caretaker.

• 1:32:11Dax Shepard?

  He's actually getting me there.

• 1:32:13Speaker 05

I want somebody to, to, to, to change me.

• 1:32:16Speaker 01

Yeah. You did a good job telling him what I wanted.

• 1:32:20Speaker 05

Change my, my, my bedding and also my pants. I'm currently unemployed and I am unemployable. Uh, I've been told that. I'm morbidly obese and I, I can't stop smoking. I've been smoking, but I, I'm, I'm, that is a, that is a do or die. I have to smoke cigarettes almost constantly and I also smoke cigars at the same time.

• 1:32:46Dax Shepard?

  At the same time.

• 1:32:47Speaker 05

And, uh, you know, I, I'm willing to move in. I'll give it a shot. I'll come. I own a ferret and, you know, I don't know if you've seen the movie Beast Master, but you can think of that. So I'm just a beast master bra, ferret owning, uh, unemployable, morbidly obese guy. Anyway.

• 1:33:07Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:33:07Speaker 05

I can't wait to meet you, Monica. I cannot wait to meet you. I think you know me as the Berserker Blothar.

• 1:33:16Dax Shepard?

Oh my God, he's in the full regalia.

• 1:33:19Speaker 01

Oh, oh, he just blew a kiss. Wow.

• 1:33:23Dax Shepard?

  Wow.

• 1:33:24Speaker 01

  Guar.

• 1:33:25Dax Shepard?

It's good that we heard him before we saw him. Taylor, Beauty and the Beast, you want to like get to know his spirit first?

• 1:33:31Speaker 01

  It's true.

• 1:33:32Dax Shepard?

Before you see the horns and the mini breasts.

• 1:33:37Speaker 01

  Oh, that's fantastic.

• 1:33:39Dax Shepard?

  Wow, Rob.

• 1:33:40Speaker 01

  Oh, Rob.

• 1:33:41Dax Shepard?

And that is. That's his genitals.

• 1:33:43Speaker 01

  This is his dick.

• 1:33:45Dax Shepard?

That's one of his seven penises.

• 1:33:46Speaker 01

Wow. Well, that was fantastic. I, I did.

• 1:33:50Dax Shepard?

  Oh, it's Guar wrapping paper-ish.

• 1:33:52Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:33:52Dax Shepard?

I mean, not officially branded, but there's demons on it.

• 1:33:55Speaker 01

Demons. Well, that, that was really something.

• 1:33:58Dax Shepard?

  That's incredible, Rob.

• 1:33:59Speaker 01

  That was fantastic.

• 1:33:59Dax Shepard?

  You always outdo yourself.

• 1:34:00Speaker 01

Woo, Guar. I mean, I don't know. Guess what? He's funny.

• 1:34:05Dax Shepard?

He's really funny, and he's clearly quite smart.

• 1:34:08Speaker 01

He has a PhD, he said. Oh, pretty huge dick.

• 1:34:10Dax Shepard?

Oh, wow, is that a thing?

• 1:34:12Speaker 01

Yeah, it's from Friends. But if he loves Friends.

• 1:34:15Dax Shepard?

That's better than a pretty huge dick or a PhD.

• 1:34:21Dax Shepard?

That was great, because I was distracting her.

• 1:34:24Speaker 01

  You did?

• 1:34:25Dax Shepard?

  No, no, no, no, no.

• 1:34:28Speaker 01

  Oh, God.

• 1:34:29Dax Shepard?

What do we have in there?

• 1:34:30Speaker 01

  Talking about a big swing.

• 1:34:32Dax Shepard?

  What do we have?

• 1:34:34Speaker 04

  So these are his udders.

• 1:34:36Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:34:36Speaker 01

  He sent them?

• 1:34:37Speaker 04

He sent his sack of penises.

• 1:34:40Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:34:41Dax Shepard?

I was joking so many times, and it really wasn't.

• 1:34:43Speaker 01

I'm like, I'm afraid to touch it.

• 1:34:45Dax Shepard?

  No, don't be, don't be.

• 1:34:47Speaker 01

Oh, ew, and a, and a really, like, a cute little action figure. Oh.

• 1:34:54Dax Shepard?

  Wow.

• 1:34:55Speaker 01

  You know me so well.

• 1:34:56Speaker 04

  So he wears.

• 1:35:01Speaker 04

One of his sacks that he wears.

• 1:35:03Dax Shepard?

  Oh, my God.

• 1:35:03Speaker 01

  This is, this is.

• 1:35:04Speaker 04

  This is an actual.

• 1:35:06Dax Shepard?

That's gonna look beautiful in your new house. Maybe above your bathtub, your new bathtub.

• 1:35:10Speaker 01

Wow. So he wears this on his face?

• 1:35:15Dax Shepard?

  Around his penis.

• 1:35:15Speaker 04

No, it's around his genitals, because I think sub sprays out of them during the show.

• 1:35:20Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, they're, they're functional.

• 1:35:22Speaker 01

  Oh, my God. Oh, yeah.

• 1:35:25Dax Shepard?

  Sure, they've been used.

• 1:35:26Speaker 01

They've been used, yep. Oh, my gosh. Well, thank you, Rob. This was quite a gift.

• 1:35:35Dax Shepard?

  Wow.

• 1:35:36Speaker 01

Oh, my. We might need to hang.

• 1:35:38Speaker 04

  Put it, yeah.

• 1:35:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:35:40Dax Shepard?

We have a red ban over, over YouTube.

• 1:35:43Speaker 01

  Well, that was great.

• 1:35:44Dax Shepard?

  Wow, exciting.

• 1:35:46Speaker 01

  Thank you. What an experience.

• 1:35:50Dax Shepard?

  Am I the next oldest?

• 1:35:51Speaker 01

  Yes, you are.

• 1:35:52Dax Shepard?

Okay, you mean, you mean, okay, are these both for me?

• 1:35:55Speaker 01

Yes, that one's from, opened from Rob.

• 1:35:58Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:35:58Speaker 01

  Maybe because it's closest.

• 1:36:00Dax Shepard?

  He's youngest.

• 1:36:01Speaker 01

  And he's youngest.

• 1:36:05Dax Shepard?

  We honor youth here.

• 1:36:07Speaker 01

Yeah, we do. I like that ribbon.

• 1:36:09Speaker 04

  It's paper source too.

• 1:36:10Speaker 01

  Oh, paper source.

• 1:36:12Dax Shepard?

  My grandmother.

• 1:36:12Speaker 01

  Sponsor us.

• 1:36:13Dax Shepard?

Save the shit out of that. It's gonna be blue. I gotta open it for the first time here.

• 1:36:21Speaker 04

  Where the tape is.

• 1:36:23Dax Shepard?

Oh, it's already been opened, okay. Flour de Mal? Speaking of stockings, that's what I thought stockings were.

• 1:36:30Speaker 01

Speaking of big swing, what is happening? Flour de Mal is a very nice.

• 1:36:37Dax Shepard?

  Bless it.

• 1:36:40Dax Shepard?

  What is Flour de Mal?

• 1:36:41Speaker 01

It's a lingerie company, beautiful lingerie company. Yeah.

• 1:36:49Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:36:49Speaker 04

It's a red hair. It was a red hair.

• 1:36:53Dax Shepard?

  Now I'm sad and...

• 1:36:55Speaker 01

You're sad and mad? Uh oh.

• 1:36:56Dax Shepard?

  Rob!

• 1:36:58Speaker 01

  Uh oh.

• 1:36:59Dax Shepard?

  Rob, God's true cashmere.

• 1:37:06Dax Shepard?

A button down? I don't have any of these.

• 1:37:09Speaker 01

  It's beautiful.

• 1:37:10Dax Shepard?

Of these kind with that aren't flannel?

• 1:37:13Speaker 01

  It's black and it's...

• 1:37:15Dax Shepard?

  And it's beautiful.

• 1:37:17Speaker 01

  It's gorgeous.

• 1:37:18Dax Shepard?

Oh my God. Rob, did you sell your house? Are you homeless? This is really beautiful. Whoa, with the purple buttons.

• 1:37:30Speaker 01

Yeah, the purple buttons are lovely.

• 1:37:33Dax Shepard?

What do they call them? The gems? They're stones, they're rocks? There's something very special about the buttons on these.

• 1:37:38Speaker 04

I think Brad Hand makes the buttons.

• 1:37:40Dax Shepard?

  He does?

• 1:37:41Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:37:44Dax Shepard?

Oh my heavens, Rob. Thank you. Oh my goodness. Okay, Rob next, my present?

• 1:37:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:37:54Dax Shepard?

Alright, so you're gonna wanna open it like this. You're gonna wanna remove that piece and then peel it back.

• 1:38:02Speaker 01

Oh wow. It has a pretty, it has a...

• 1:38:05Dax Shepard?

And it was gonna be a spectacular diorama, but a lot of the items made their way down to Nashville.

• 1:38:13Speaker 04

Oh, I see. Oh, San Francisco and Chicago.

• 1:38:20Dax Shepard?

It says Levi's on the front. That's Levi's Stadium. And the gold dots is front row tickets.

• 1:38:27Speaker 04

  Amazing. Thank you.

• 1:38:29Speaker 01

  I can't see anything.

• 1:38:30Speaker 04

Uh, the Bears, the closest they get to LA is San Francisco.

• 1:38:35Speaker 01

  Oh, fun.

• 1:38:36Dax Shepard?

And he'll be there over Christmas.

• 1:38:37Speaker 04

And we're gonna be right there.

• 1:38:39Speaker 01

  Oh, that's awesome.

• 1:38:40Speaker 04

Calvin and I are gonna road trip from Tahoe to San Francisco.

• 1:38:45Dax Shepard?

Can I tell you what was gonna be so cute? So I ordered bobble heads. So I had a, um, Chicago Bears bobble head that was gonna be in the end zone and then a 49ers bobble head. And then I found Elliot, who I think Rob looks so much like Elliot from ET.

• 1:38:58Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:38:59Dax Shepard?

With his little ET and that was gonna be Calvin and Rob sitting on the front row of that stadium, but those are all on my porch.

• 1:39:07Speaker 01

  That's very cute.

• 1:39:09Dax Shepard?

Thank you very much. You're so welcome.

• 1:39:11Speaker 01

Wow. I love it. Cute. That took some, you took, you did some printing.

• 1:39:17Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it was gonna be really great with the bobble heads, but we get the picture.

• 1:39:22Speaker 04

  Thank you.

• 1:39:23Dax Shepard?

  You're welcome.

• 1:39:24Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:39:25Dax Shepard?

  You're the next youngest.

• 1:39:26Speaker 01

  From you.

• 1:39:27Dax Shepard?

Okay. I don't even know how to pronounce it, but your friend Kelly knows how to.

• 1:39:31Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:39:32Dax Shepard?

So I basically bought you the entire line of Lowell. Lowell?

• 1:39:36Speaker 01

  Loewe.

• 1:39:37Dax Shepard?

  Loewe candles.

• 1:39:38Speaker 01

  Oh, what?

• 1:39:41Dax Shepard?

Yes, minus the one they didn't have in stock.

• 1:39:44Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:39:45Dax Shepard?

  But it's a whole array.

• 1:39:46Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:39:47Dax Shepard?

And then I got you like, I got you wig trimming things. They're in Nashville. I got you cute little mice.

• 1:39:54Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:39:54Dax Shepard?

  That, um, holders.

• 1:39:56Speaker 01

  Cute.

• 1:39:57Dax Shepard?

I got you this really cool antiquey thing that's both a snuffer outer and a lighter.

• 1:40:01Speaker 01

  Oh my.

• 1:40:02Dax Shepard?

For the candles. So it's a, um, one stop candle extravaganza for your house.

• 1:40:09Speaker 01

My goodness, Loewe makes the best candles.

• 1:40:13Dax Shepard?

I'm such a Philistine. I text her and said, does Monica like Diptyque candles? I was like, gonna get you a bunch of those really nice Diptyques. And she said, and I think this is her being nice. She's like, she does. And she also like, loves whatever. I'm like, got it. Definitely pick the other one.

• 1:40:34Speaker 01

Wow. She's good. She's good. Oh my, thank you. They're very special candles.

• 1:40:42Dax Shepard?

Cucumber, tomato, uh, the beeswax was the one that was in there. That was the one I was most excited about.

• 1:40:48Speaker 01

Oh dang, beeswax. That's all right. I don't, that sounds boring.

• 1:40:51Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, okay.

• 1:40:52Speaker 04

It's like kill a bunch of bees to make it. Fuck school, fuck homework.

• 1:40:55Speaker 01

Yeah. Fun. Oh, I can't wait.

• 1:40:58Dax Shepard?

  Well, 2:30 you'll have them.

• 1:40:59Speaker 01

Oh my gosh, I can't wait. Okay, now you for me.

• 1:41:04Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:41:05Speaker 01

And also yours, something on the back of your little card too.

• 1:41:08Dax Shepard?

Okay, did you draw this picture?

• 1:41:10Speaker 01

I wish. But I thought of you because it's a muscular man.

• 1:41:14Dax Shepard?

It's a muscular man and it appears to be a dumbbell.

• 1:41:16Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:41:16Dax Shepard?

  On the bottom.

• 1:41:17Speaker 01

And um, on Rob's card, it was an orchestra man because Rob likes music.

• 1:41:22Speaker 04

  With the triangle.

• 1:41:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:41:24Dax Shepard?

  Ed Grimley style. Okay.

• 1:41:27Dax Shepard?

Two Dax, this gift is in honor of friend of the pod, Brad Pitt.

• 1:41:38Dax Shepard?

You know what's funny though? Weren't we just saying the other days, like you get, you liked an elephant once? Like my father likes elephants. So every single present he ever got, you were saying it about your dad, I think.

• 1:41:48Speaker 01

Penguin. I was just like, this is what happens. Yeah.

• 1:41:51Dax Shepard?

Now I want to counteract that narrative with if everyone's just like, he loves God's true, I ain't complaining.

• 1:41:59Speaker 04

That was, that was for this episode. It was Zoe talking about otters for their daughter.

• 1:42:03Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 1:42:04Dax Shepard?

Oh, it was? Good ding ding ding.

• 1:42:08Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I mean, this wrapping paper is like cloth. Is it God's true credit?

• 1:42:12Speaker 01

It is. It is. So you should keep it. I'm a tiny bit worried you have it. And if you do, we'll figure it out.

• 1:42:20Dax Shepard?

  I do not.

• 1:42:21Speaker 01

You don't. I thought the red was really nice.

• 1:42:25Speaker 04

Yeah, that's what I was scared of too. I was like, can't get a flannel because I don't know.

• 1:42:29Speaker 01

  Which ones he has.

• 1:42:32Speaker 01

Yeah, I thought that would look very nice on you.

• 1:42:35Dax Shepard?

I'm gonna cut wood in this because I sound very masculine lumberjack.

• 1:42:39Speaker 01

It does. It looks lumberjack, but it's, it's God's truth.

• 1:42:43Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's for a sissy lumberjack like me.

• 1:42:46Speaker 01

Exactly. It's for a Hollywood lumberjack.

• 1:42:49Dax Shepard?

  A gentleman lumberjack. You guys.

• 1:42:53Speaker 01

You guys, who knew God's true?

• 1:42:55Dax Shepard?

Oh my gosh, what a win-win-win.

• 1:42:58Speaker 01

And we didn't even talk about it. What if we had gotten the same one?

• 1:43:02Speaker 04

What if he got you the same thing?

• 1:43:03Dax Shepard?

You're always trying to put a positive spin on everything during presents. You're like, great, I have one that I can spill on.

• 1:43:13Dax Shepard?

Oh my God, you guys, I feel not worthy of these beautiful presents.

• 1:43:17Speaker 01

I don't either. I definitely don't feel worthy of this penis.

• 1:43:21Dax Shepard?

  Tri penis?

• 1:43:22Speaker 01

  It's a quad. It's a quad.

• 1:43:25Dax Shepard?

  Tri penis top.

• 1:43:28Speaker 01

  Wow. Guys, good job.

• 1:43:31Dax Shepard?

  I love Christmas.

• 1:43:32Speaker 01

I love Christmas. It's so fun.

• 1:43:34Dax Shepard?

  Love it.

• 1:43:35Speaker 01

But I do wanna, I wanna say.

• 1:43:36Dax Shepard?

  You wanna bring it down?

• 1:43:37Speaker 01

I do. No, I wanna, I wanna be grateful. We got a huge honor a couple of days ago.

• 1:43:44Dax Shepard?

Oh my gosh, yes, we got a Christmas miracle.

• 1:43:46Speaker 01

We really did. We, as a team, are nominated for Golden Globe for this very show. Who could have imagined eight years ago?

• 1:43:58Dax Shepard?

And I just wanna say, because if by some strike of lightning we win, this will not be in the speech. We're here for two reasons. We got this for two reasons.

• 1:44:11Dax Shepard?

The insane vulnerability of our guests.

• 1:44:13Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:44:14Dax Shepard?

  Like, that's the gift.

• 1:44:15Speaker 01

  A hundred percent.

• 1:44:16Dax Shepard?

Big deal. We could be being vulnerable all day long and people like, eh, suck one.

• 1:44:20Speaker 01

  Suck one of the four.

• 1:44:23Dax Shepard?

And then, equal to that is how many people listen and share and love and talk about.

• 1:44:30Speaker 01

  It's the listeners.

• 1:44:32Dax Shepard?

And you guys gave me my first nomination.

• 1:44:35Speaker 01

It's so nice. It's the listeners, they're with, they're loyal and we're so grateful and they keep us going.

• 1:44:43Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I do want to share the moment because it's a very funny, while it was happening, or right after it happened, I'm like, yeah, definitely I remember this for the rest of my life, which is, you know, I have this ironclad morning routine. Well, I go to bed on Sunday and I know these announcements come out at 5 a.m. I know we're on the list of 25 that are eligible. I did some roundtables and stuff and participated in the whole thing.

• 1:45:07Speaker 01

Yeah, we did a press conference.

• 1:45:08Dax Shepard?

Did a press conference, so I know 5 a.m. tomorrow morning, this news comes out. So I wake up on Monday and I am already committed, like, we're not deviating from our routine. Like, that would A, be bad luck and I'm superstitious.

• 1:45:26Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:45:26Dax Shepard?

So I do the, I make the coffee, I do the meditation, I do the journal. So now good hours gone by and, and always on Monday, then I turn, as soon as I put my journal down, I then grab my phone and I go through the clips Rob sent and I post whatever Monday's episode is. And I put my journal away and I looked at my phone and my heart, like, literally skipped a beat where I was like, oh my God, man, I'm gonna look at the phone and there's either gonna be 40 messages, text messages, or zero text messages as normal in the morning. And that moment before grabbing that phone, knowing it was gonna be that obvious, was the most specific weird feeling ever.

• 1:46:11Dax Shepard?

And more anxiety, I'm a pessimist, so more anxiety than excitement. And then I picked it up and I opened it up and I saw like, right away I had like, I don't know, fifteen or twenty text messages. And I immediately just cried.

• 1:46:27Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:46:27Dax Shepard?

Five or six tears of like relief and joy and elation and I just can't believe it.

• 1:46:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:46:36Dax Shepard?

And then I start looking at the texts and the first one is you and I'm like, oh my God, Monty was up at five because you were up at what, four fifty?

• 1:46:43Speaker 01

Okay, yeah, so I didn't, yes, same situation. I know it's coming. I had already talked to Wondry. Shout out Wondry, thank you.

• 1:46:51Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:46:52Speaker 01

I had been talking to them and they were like, okay, so if it happens, could you guys maybe do a little video? And we were like, and you know, I said, sure.

• 1:47:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:05Speaker 01

And I said, you know, just, we're not gonna be up at five.

• 1:47:08Dax Shepard?

  That was the email.

• 1:47:09Speaker 01

Yeah, we're not gonna be up at five, but like, we'll do it in some hours. And then I said, can you text me, not you, Wondry, like, can, can you just text me and let me know? And, and Alice, shout out, was like, even if you don't get it. And I was like, yes, yes, it's okay. I wanna know, let me know. And then I thought, like, you know what's funny? I really was like, it doesn't matter. I don't, like, it, we're, we're fine. I said to her, I was like, it's fine, we're fine.

• 1:47:40Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:47:40Speaker 01

Like, we, we're, we're happy with this show.

• 1:47:43Dax Shepard?

Being in the first twenty-five was already blew my mind.

• 1:47:46Speaker 01

Yes, exactly. That already felt like such a.

• 1:47:49Dax Shepard?

  Validating.

• 1:47:50Speaker 01

Moment, yes. So then, um, but so like, you know, I was like, oh, it's tomorrow, okay. And I was talking to my parents and I was like, oh, you know, we might be, I don't know, we're in the top twenty-five for a Golden Globe. We find out tomorrow. And they were like, what? And then, so I got a little bit antsy when they did that. And I went to bed and I was like, yeah, I'll just wake up at eight like normal and see. And then my body woke up at like four thirty and was just like, ready. And I was like, oh no, oh no, I guess I, I care more than I, than I think.

• 1:48:23Dax Shepard?

I relate so much because, and I'm not lying. There's no like ego protection. In my waking hours, I'm fine either way. It doesn't make us, break us. It's, it would be a lovely icing on the cake, but it's not a thing.

• 1:48:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:48:37Dax Shepard?

  My subconscious feels differently.

• 1:48:39Speaker 01

  I guess.

• 1:48:39Dax Shepard?

Because for three nights leading up to that Sunday morning, I was having all these weird anxiety dreams. And so somehow that's in my subconscious, like that's not in my waking.

• 1:48:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:48:50Dax Shepard?

  Existence.

• 1:48:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:48:51Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:52Speaker 01

Yeah, so it was 4:30 and I was like, oh no, but I'm not gonna look, I I'm gonna try to go back to sleep, but I'm not gonna look. And I obviously did not sleep for that. And I just, and at one point I was like, I'm gonna look. And then we had a nice text. And then, yeah, I texted you and I said.

• 1:49:08Dax Shepard?

So what was your like visceral body reaction?

• 1:49:10Speaker 01

I was very grateful for everything. I was just like, oh my God, how cool to be recognized in the first of of this category. It's like, that's so special. Look what we made. It was more of that, like, look what we've done. I could really like tap into that. Like, oh my God, we we've done something very cool and I'm proud of it. And I'm proud of all of us. So that was the feeling. And then I texted you and I said, let me know when you wake up. We have a video to make.

• 1:49:43Dax Shepard?

  And then.

• 1:49:44Speaker 01

  We made one.

• 1:49:45Dax Shepard?

We made one and I'm just not, I gotta, I should have called Rob first. I know how to record my screens. I think it was easy. Record my screen, FaceTime you, we have a fun chit chat. This is great. Send it to you. You you text me back like, hey, where's the audio?

• 1:50:00Speaker 01

  No audio.

• 1:50:01Speaker 04

  Got that voice memo too.

• 1:50:03Dax Shepard?

Oh, you gotta do them both at the same time?

• 1:50:04Speaker 04

I think that'd be the move.

• 1:50:06Speaker 01

  That didn't work out.

• 1:50:07Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that didn't work out.

• 1:50:08Speaker 01

  Ironically.

• 1:50:09Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that's okay though.

• 1:50:10Speaker 01

And that's okay. Um, but it was, it was a fun day.

• 1:50:14Dax Shepard?

Super fun day, super duper fun day.

• 1:50:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:50:16Dax Shepard?

Um, I'm gonna credit you for um, bringing your steak championship winner spirit.

• 1:50:22Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 1:50:22Dax Shepard?

I think I think we're riding on your.

• 1:50:25Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:50:25Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:50:25Speaker 04

I had lost my softball championship the day before.

• 1:50:28Speaker 01

  Oh, no.

• 1:50:30Speaker 04

So it was not for me.

• 1:50:31Speaker 01

You were on a, you were worried. You were like, oh no.

• 1:50:34Speaker 04

Well, I forgot it was even happening.

• 1:50:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:50:37Dax Shepard?

Did it dig you out of your hole?

• 1:50:38Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:50:39Speaker 01

Did you care more about this or the softball?

• 1:50:41Dax Shepard?

  Be honest.

• 1:50:42Speaker 04

I cared more about this. I was saying gratitude. Although I I woke up at like 5:30 to the text messages.

• 1:50:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:50:52Speaker 04

And I said, I told Natalie and she just grunted and put her blanket over her.

• 1:50:57Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah, that's.

• 1:50:58Speaker 01

  That's right, yeah.

• 1:50:59Dax Shepard?

Well, I also saw, yeah, I, I saw that and I saw the text. I was so excited and I FaceTimed you. And then I'm like, okay, well, A, it's time for me to take the kids to school. And then also I'm gonna probably tell them.

• 1:51:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:12Dax Shepard?

And then I was like, on my way to do that, I was like, oh, I better check and see if Kristen was.

• 1:51:16Speaker 01

Yes, that's the first thing I did.

• 1:51:18Dax Shepard?

Check me out. And then I don't say congratulations to her.

• 1:51:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:22Dax Shepard?

And then so I was kind of nervously scrolling through. And so I was like, okay, go, we're good.

• 1:51:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:26Dax Shepard?

  So then it was.

• 1:51:27Speaker 01

Kristen has one and her show has one as well.

• 1:51:30Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:51:31Speaker 01

Very exciting. It'll be a real family affair at that event.

• 1:51:34Dax Shepard?

  Big time family affair.

• 1:51:35Speaker 01

I'm proud of both of you and I'm glad to be doing this with the both of you.

• 1:51:39Dax Shepard?

Yeah, man, I would never, I would never in my life have gotten nominated for a Golden Globe without you two. It's just that simple. It's black and white.

• 1:51:47Speaker 01

I know, we all came here, we did, me and you came here. I used to watch that show and dream, dream my little heart out.

• 1:51:54Dax Shepard?

  You did.

• 1:51:54Speaker 01

Of walking that red carpet, being there. And I'm doing it.

• 1:51:59Dax Shepard?

Are you gonna wear your leggings?

• 1:52:00Speaker 01

Back door, back, back door. Um, no, I, look, I'm, the fashion, I'm stressed.

• 1:52:08Dax Shepard?

God, stressed? I thought you would be the most excited you've ever, you're like, you're dying for a gala. Well, this is the gala of all fucking galas.

• 1:52:14Speaker 01

But I, I have to, I wanna, I wanna get it perfect and I want a dress.

• 1:52:20Dax Shepard?

  You wanna win best dressed?

• 1:52:21Speaker 01

Yeah, and like the dresses go.

• 1:52:23Dax Shepard?

You wanna sweep the Golden Globes. Best dress.

• 1:52:25Speaker 01

I want them all, I want all, no, it's, it's political. You know, the fashion world's very political. Who will style who and the dresses, like, the, most of them are probably already gone to, you know, big people. And I wanna, I want to look good. And I am stressed, but I'm excited.

• 1:52:46Dax Shepard?

I'm not stressed, I'm pretty confident you're gonna look great.

• 1:52:48Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 1:52:49Dax Shepard?

  So, big thanks to everyone.

• 1:52:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:52:51Dax Shepard?

Um, and, uh, merry, merry, merry, merry, merry, merry, merry, Christmas.

• 1:52:55Speaker 01

And happy new year, we'll, we'll see you guys next year.

• 1:52:59Dax Shepard?

Let's do some facts. Let's do. Nice.

• 1:53:03Speaker 01

Fantastic. Okay. Now. What is the name of the lady whose legs got burned by the hot coffee?

• 1:53:12Dax Shepard?

  Oh, good.

• 1:53:13Speaker 01

Okay, we should shout her out.

• 1:53:14Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I don't, I don't think she's probably still.

• 1:53:18Speaker 01

  I don't either.

• 1:53:19Dax Shepard?

Yeah, so it was in the eighties.

• 1:53:20Speaker 01

  It was ninety-two.

• 1:53:21Dax Shepard?

  Oh, it was ninety-two?

• 1:53:22Speaker 01

Yes, she suffered third degree burns. Um, her name is.

• 1:53:28Dax Shepard?

  Hopefully.

• 1:53:29Speaker 01

  Stella Liebeck?

• 1:53:31Dax Shepard?

She's so likeable if you watch the documentary.

• 1:53:33Speaker 01

  She was seventy-nine.

• 1:53:35Dax Shepard?

That's my point. She was, you know, she's eighty then, that was thirty.

• 1:53:38Speaker 04

  She died eleven years ago.

• 1:53:40Dax Shepard?

  She died eleven years ago.

• 1:53:42Speaker 01

  Maybe some complications.

• 1:53:43Dax Shepard?

  No, no, no, no.

• 1:53:44Speaker 04

  A broken heart, I think.

• 1:53:45Dax Shepard?

Oh, Jesus Christ, guys, happy holidays.

• 1:53:51Dax Shepard?

She was so sweet and she didn't want any money. She just wanted her legs fixed.

• 1:53:55Speaker 01

God, yeah, she was seventy-nine in her grandson's car passenger. This story is so sad.

• 1:54:02Dax Shepard?

I know, and also it was kind of pitched to us as it was like reckless.

• 1:54:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:54:05Dax Shepard?

But she had, they pulled over to a parking spot and she picked the thing up and then the, you know.

• 1:54:10Speaker 01

  The lid fell off?

• 1:54:11Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, and it splashed all over thighs and just.

• 1:54:14Speaker 01

Can you imagine if you were with your grandma and your grandma's legs burnt off?

• 1:54:19Dax Shepard?

Pulled the person operating the car. I would've walked in there and jerked it off the wall. I wouldn't have hurt a person, but I would have flipped. If my grandma Yolas had been hurt, I would have fucking ripped that whole machine out.

• 1:54:29Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:54:30Dax Shepard?

Be like, what the fuck is wrong with you guys? Look at my grandma Yolas's thighs. She was named after Ulysses S. Grant. She's an important woman.

• 1:54:45Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:54:51Dax Shepard?

That's true, do you know that? That's so weird.

• 1:54:53Speaker 01

  I didn't know that.

• 1:54:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:54:54Speaker 01

  That's really, really cute.

• 1:54:56Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:54:57Speaker 01

Um, okay, but poor Stella was hospitalized for eight days.

• 1:55:01Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's as serious of a burns I've ever seen.

• 1:55:04Speaker 01

  And, uh.

• 1:55:05Dax Shepard?

  Uh-oh.

• 1:55:08Dax Shepard?

Uh oh. It's like when Cooper and Fallon are trying to talk about the Elephant Man and they just can't.

• 1:55:15Speaker 01

I know because it's so sad.

• 1:55:16Dax Shepard?

My man's, they said at one point, one of them said, "My man's bones were whatever."

• 1:55:21Speaker 01

I know. Um, because severe burns to her thighs.

• 1:55:26Dax Shepard?

Oh no. Did you say genitals? Is that what you're laughing at? Okay, you saw genitals and you thought of an older lady's genitals and you have the giggles.

• 1:55:36Speaker 01

It's just no one talks about that part, obviously, but that's horrible.

• 1:55:42Dax Shepard?

It's part of ageism. We think that a

• 1:55:43Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:55:44Dax Shepard?

An older woman doesn't have a vagina anymore. She just becomes a Barbie.

• 1:55:47Speaker 01

But she kind of didn't have a vagina anymore.

• 1:55:49Dax Shepard?

She can't have kids, so why does she need it?

• 1:55:51Speaker 01

Oh God. Um, okay, but yeah, she, she sued for $20,000.

• 1:55:58Dax Shepard?

  There you go.

• 1:55:59Speaker 01

But then was awarded 2.7 million, although though this was later reduced. Why? Cause of society blaming women.

• 1:56:08Dax Shepard?

This doc is so great. I don't know where you find it, hot coffee, but it's all about tort reform and what was sold to us and, and really what happened in the States where they adopted it. The medical cost still went up, even outpacing some of the, the states that didn't do tort reform. It's all hoax anyways.

• 1:56:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:56:24Dax Shepard?

Also, I'm just gonna add, I'm on my soapbox, there are egregious cases. There's totally frivolous lawsuits. There's no question.

• 1:56:31Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:56:31Dax Shepard?

But you have to just tolerate that that's gonna happen so that you preserve the right for an individual citizen to take on the biggest companies in the world.

• 1:56:40Speaker 01

  Yeah, I agree.

• 1:56:40Dax Shepard?

  You can sue Google.

• 1:56:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:56:42Dax Shepard?

That is your only defense. Like we have this one thing left, the civil court system, and that's the only way an individual can fight back with government, corporations. So it has to be preserved and protected. And some of these, these damages have to be exorbitant.

• 1:56:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:56:58Dax Shepard?

To get them to do a policy change because they just do a cost analysis and they go, "It'd be cheaper for us to keep the policy and pay this person off."

• 1:57:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:57:05Dax Shepard?

  Now it's gotta hurt them.

• 1:57:06Speaker 01

  Exactly, because that's normal.

• 1:57:08Dax Shepard?

  McDonald's, and I love McDonald's.

• 1:57:09Speaker 01

  Yes, we love McDonald's.

• 1:57:10Dax Shepard?

They changed their policy in the, as a result of that case.

• 1:57:14Speaker 01

Um, okay. Are cats smart? Well, I did, are cats smarter than dogs?

• 1:57:20Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:57:20Speaker 01

It is difficult to definitively say if cats or dogs are smarter. As intelligence can be measured in different ways and they show different strengths. Dogs have more neurons in their cerebral cortex, suggesting a higher capacity for tasks and learning, while cats may be more persistent in solving problems independently. Ultimately, both are intelligent in their own right. AI is being very diplomatic.

• 1:57:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:57:43Speaker 01

  Um.

• 1:57:44Dax Shepard?

  They're being robbed.

• 1:57:45Speaker 01

Dogs are often considered more intelligent due to a high, yeah, higher number of neurons.

• 1:57:50Dax Shepard?

But as I learned in biology in college, it's more than that. It's the ratio to your mass.

• 1:57:56Speaker 01

  Right, yeah, so why?

• 1:57:57Dax Shepard?

Cause like a capuchin monkey doesn't have a bigger neocortex than say, I don't know, Reese's macaque, maybe it does, but it's so tiny.

• 1:58:05Speaker 01

  Right, exactly.

• 1:58:06Dax Shepard?

And it's super intelligent somehow because of that relationship.

• 1:58:09Speaker 01

Yeah, cause wasn't that also like the Neander?

• 1:58:12Dax Shepard?

  Neanderthal has a bigger brain.

• 1:58:14Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:58:14Dax Shepard?

Sixteen hundred and fifty cc's versus fourteen fifty.

• 1:58:17Speaker 01

  Right, but they were bigger.

• 1:58:18Dax Shepard?

But their neocortex, they were heavier.

• 1:58:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:58:21Dax Shepard?

And I don't know if their neocortex was bigger.

• 1:58:23Speaker 01

Okay, well, this says, this says studies suggest that people with higher IQs often gravitate toward feline companions.

• 1:58:30Dax Shepard?

  I believe that.

• 1:58:30Speaker 01

Says, but why? Reason number one, independent minds attract independent pets. Cats don't need constant attention. They do their own thing, perfect for thinkers, creatives, and deep workers who value quiet focus.

• 1:58:43Dax Shepard?

  Hmm.

• 1:58:44Speaker 01

  That's interesting.

• 1:58:45Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:58:46Speaker 01

  Okay, now.

• 1:58:48Dax Shepard?

  Dogs present as dumber.

• 1:58:50Speaker 01

  Yeah, they do.

• 1:58:51Dax Shepard?

Cause they come to like, oh, oh.

• 1:58:52Speaker 01

And their tongues are out and they're slobbering.

• 1:58:55Dax Shepard?

  Oh, my God.

• 1:58:55Speaker 01

And their dicks are out often.

• 1:58:57Dax Shepard?

  And they're hard sometimes.

• 1:58:59Speaker 01

  Yeah, the red rocket.

• 1:59:01Dax Shepard?

I've never seen a cat erection.

• 1:59:03Speaker 01

  Me either.

• 1:59:03Dax Shepard?

I don't even know if they have erections.

• 1:59:04Speaker 01

I don't know either. I looked up how many doodle dogs are in Los Angeles. There's no exact number, but it's a large and growing population. It has an estimated, uh, Los Angeles County has an estimated five point three million dogs across roughly three point three million households. And doodle dogs are a popular category, though not the most popular breed overall.

• 1:59:26Dax Shepard?

  What is?

• 1:59:28Speaker 01

  You'd think they'd say.

• 1:59:29Dax Shepard?

  Who cares?

• 1:59:30Speaker 01

  Yeah, I sure don't.

• 1:59:32Dax Shepard?

  But.

• 1:59:32Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, rescues for sure. Rescue, who knows what they are.

• 1:59:37Speaker 04

  French Bulldog.

• 1:59:39Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:59:40Speaker 04

Yeah, it's the most popular dog breed in LA based on American Kennel Club registration data.

• 1:59:47Dax Shepard?

  That's interesting. I don't see a lot of them.

• 1:59:49Speaker 01

  Me either.

• 1:59:49Dax Shepard?

  They must be house dogs.

• 1:59:51Speaker 01

Um, there's a top hundred list.

• 1:59:55Speaker 01

  Merry Christmas.

• 1:59:56Dax Shepard?

  Of dogs?

• 1:59:57Speaker 01

No, of best Christmas movies of all time.

• 2:00:00Dax Shepard?

Okay, let's do the top ten.

• 2:00:01Speaker 01

All right, I'll give it to you for Christmas. Ten is Gremlins.

• 2:00:05Dax Shepard?

  Oh, great.

• 2:00:06Speaker 01

Nine is Miracle on Thirty Fourth Street.

• 2:00:08Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:00:08Speaker 01

  Eight is A Christmas Story.

• 2:00:10Dax Shepard?

  Great.

• 2:00:11Speaker 01

  Seven, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

• 2:00:13Dax Shepard?

  That's number one, but continue.

• 2:00:14Speaker 01

  Six, Elf, Ding Ding Ding.

• 2:00:16Dax Shepard?

  Wow, they beat Vacation.

• 2:00:18Speaker 01

Five, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Uh, four, A Christmas Carol. Three, Die Hard. Two, Home Alone, that's my number one, and one, It's a Wonderful Life.

• 2:00:30Dax Shepard?

  That's a fine list. I'm usually more.

• 2:00:32Speaker 01

  It's from IMDb.

• 2:00:33Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:00:34Speaker 01

  Trust the brand.

• 2:00:34Dax Shepard?

I don't think Rudolph should be that high up. I'm gonna say that. It's twenty minutes, it's claymation. I love it. But you can't put that up against The Grinch Who Stole Christmas is way better. In fact, it's, I'm actually, now I'm offended.

• 2:00:46Speaker 01

  Oh, boy.

• 2:00:47Dax Shepard?

The original Grinch Who Stole Christmas should be number one. That is a perfect.

• 2:00:51Speaker 01

I think it should be up there. I don't, Home Alone's my number one.

• 2:00:55Dax Shepard?

You can, I'm not gonna fight you on that. It's great. We already watched it this season.

• 2:00:58Speaker 01

So good. Okay, now, click. At the end of this episode, the musicians were talking about click. We didn't know what they were talking about.

• 2:01:06Dax Shepard?

  I did, but continue.

• 2:01:09Speaker 01

We did not know what they were talking about.

• 2:01:10Dax Shepard?

I had no idea. What was the meme?

• 2:01:12Speaker 01

And I looked it up. In music, click most commonly refers to as a click track. An audio metronome used to keep musicians in sync during recording or live performance. It's a rhythmic pulse, often played through headphones, that ensures a consistent tempo and can include cues for song sections like verses and choruses.

• 2:01:30Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I would hate that. It would be so distracting to me. I can see why some people don't like it.

• 2:01:34Speaker 01

  They don't like click.

• 2:01:35Dax Shepard?

If you just hear in your ear every time, click, click, click.

• 2:01:38Speaker 01

  I don't like that either. I don't like click.

• 2:01:40Dax Shepard?

Although you might be able to sing along perfectly, given what we learned in the last fact check.

• 2:01:44Speaker 01

  Okay, that's it.

• 2:01:45Dax Shepard?

Okay, well, I. I love Zoe.

• 2:01:47Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 2:01:48Dax Shepard?

  I love Christmas time.

• 2:01:49Speaker 01

  Me too.

• 2:01:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, it's so good.

• 2:01:51Speaker 01

  Happy holiday.

• 2:01:52Dax Shepard?

Happy holiday. From us and ours to you and yours.

• 2:01:55Speaker 01

  Goodbye.

• 2:01:55Dax Shepard?

And everyone in between. Love you.

• 2:01:57Speaker 01

  Love you.
