I'm pro football Hall of Famer Brian Dawkins, and I lived for a long time with something I did not know the name of: major depressive disorder. I carry sadness and anger because I thought I could handle it alone, but I couldn't. Now I want to make sure others know that that support is out there. If you're experiencing similar symptoms, talk to a healthcare professional. Visit MDDAllies.com to watch my story.

Paid partnership with Johnson & Johnson. Brian Dawkins has not prescribed Caplyta lumateperone.

• 0:37Speaker 02

I needed more from my antidepressant, so my doctor added Caplyta lumateperone, proven to provide greater relief from depression symptoms than an antidepressant alone, building on my progress without starting over. Caplyta is for adults with major depressive disorder when used with an antidepressant and is available by prescription only. Individual results may vary. In clinical trials, weight gain was not common.

• 0:57Speaker 01

Elderly dementia patients have increased risk of death or stroke. Caplyta is not approved for dementia-related psychosis. Call your doctor about new or sudden mood changes, behaviors, or suicidal thoughts right away. Antidepressants may increase these risks. Report fever, confusion, stiff muscles, which may be life-threatening, or uncontrolled muscle movements, which may be permanent. High cholesterol and weight gain may occur, as can high blood sugar, which may be fatal. Monitoring is recommended. Common side effects are sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, feeling tired, and diarrhea. These aren't all the side effects.

Hello, everyone. Welcome to another episode of Good Hang. Oh, this is a good one. We have comedy legend Kristen Wiig. You may know Kristen from SNL, from Bridesmaids, from Barben Star, from Palm Royale. But we're going to talk about a lot of stuff today. We're going to talk about working together on a show at the same time. We're going to talk about Carol Burnett and how much we love Carol and everything she does. We're going to talk about The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City and why I should start watching it immediately. And we're going to talk about her new movie, Gabby's Dollhouse. So that's out, and we're going to get into all of that good stuff. But we always like to start our shows with someone that knows our guest and can speak well of our guest behind their back

• 2:20Amy Poehler?

and can give me a question to ask our guests. And we have another celeb. I mean, another comedy great, another former SNL cast member who I had the privilege to share the stage with, and that is Bill Hader. You all know Bill Hader, Barry, SNL. What I need to say, you know, you know, Bill. Bill? Bill? Can you hear me? I'm gonna get my cans on.

• 3:33Amy Poehler?

  Hi.

• 3:35Speaker 04

  How's it going?

• 3:37Amy Poehler?

It's going good. I'm zooming you from the studio and Wig is coming in today. Thank you for doing this.

• 3:45Speaker 04

Oh, no problem. Thanks for having me.

• 3:47Amy Poehler?

Of course. I hope I can get you in the stewed.

• 3:50Speaker 04

  Oh, man, I'd love to.

• 3:51Amy Poehler?

  How's life?

• 3:52Speaker 04

  Life is good. We're just like, yeah, just writing. You know, Hannah's 16, Harper's 13, Haley's 11.

• 4:02Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, they're great kids.

• 4:04Speaker 04

Yeah, just very sweet kids. So very, very, very lucky. I mean, they play a lot of jokes. My 13-year-old yesterday scared the shit out of me. She sent me a, I was in bed reading, and she sent me a text, and I looked at it, and it was a picture from underneath my bed. And I go, and I hear it in my bed. I was like, she was underneath my bed.

• 4:29Speaker 04

I was like, what the fuck is wrong with you? And she just was dying laughing. She was like, oh, my God. All right. Good night. Good night. Just scared me. It was so creepy. I was like, why'd you do that? She was like, I don't know. Just hid under my bed.

• 4:44Amy Poehler?

  It's because she's your child.

• 4:46Speaker 04

  Yeah, my child. Yeah, exactly.

• 4:48Amy Poehler?

OK, so we're gonna talk about Wig. And, you know, I'm so, like, I'm getting ready for this interview today with her. And it's like, I don't even know where to start with Kristen. She's so good, so talented. She's done so many things during SNL, after SNL. Like, she's had this incredible career on her own terms, always. I mean, you two have done so much incredible work together on the show and in Skeleton Twins, which is just beautiful work from the both of you. And I guess, how would you describe Kristen as a, you know, as a friend and a performer?

• 5:24Speaker 04

You know, Andy and I had started the show. Jason was already kind of, but we were all kind of in the same, we were freshmen all at the same time. And then Kristen came in like, three shows later. So I remember going into her office and we were writing a Vincent Price sketch. And I was kind of like, I've been here for three weeks. So, hey, newbie.

• 5:45Amy Poehler?

I know where the bathrooms are.

• 5:47Speaker 04

I know where the bathrooms are. I know you have to change elevators at this floor. And, um, and I said, hey, do you, we're writing this, you know, Vincent Price thing. You know, if you have any old character or something, you know, I was like, Amy's playing a cigarette girl. Do you remember that? We used Chesterfield cigarettes and you tap danced. Fred's doing something. And she went, oh, I'm, I'm a, maybe do Judy Garland. And I'm like, oh, what would that sound like? And she went, maybe like, oh, do you ever get the feeling that your hands are made out of sand? And I went, OK.

• 6:29Speaker 04

  You're really good.

• 6:31Speaker 04

Then I was like, um, never mind. Okay. I didn't realize who I was talking to. That's a really good line. And the impression was like spot on.

• 6:37Amy Poehler?

Yeah. She's just so good at like, um, and knowing how, what would work on the show too, like just.

• 6:47Speaker 04

That's a perfect, yes. I always say like, I don't know if you've, I felt like here's what the show likes. Here's what I like. And I was trying to find this Venn diagram.

• 6:55Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 6:56Speaker 04

And like her, it was like the same diagram.

• 6:58Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 6:58Speaker 04

It's like what she actually found funny. The show, it just, it worked on the show. And I watched her for seven years and at every table read, I feel like she did something different.

• 7:09Amy Poehler?

Yeah. She's such a crazy range.

• 7:12Speaker 04

Yeah, the range, that's the word I'm looking for is I was like, how did she? How'd she do that?

• 7:16Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 7:17Speaker 04

She played this Italian guy once and never got on the show, but she played this Italian man once. And he would just go, oh, yeah. And someone be like, I do. And he's like, oh, yeah. Oh, baby. Yeah. And I was like, where did you fucking get this? You know, and you're just like, where did that come from? And she's like, I don't know, you know, um, but she just kinda, it just felt very effortless to her in a way that I, I always really admired. And I really admired, and again, you know, you, you, Maya, you guys are this way. It was like before the shows, it was like focused, but cool as cucumbers. Go out, do the show, come back and, and just had this confidence.

• 8:02Speaker 04

And she, she had that as, you know, as well, you know?

• 8:04Amy Poehler?

Yeah. She really did. She like, it felt like she entered the show a, a fully formed cast member, ready to go.

• 8:11Speaker 04

Completely. Yeah. And she also like, it's like made it look fun.

• 8:17Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 8:18Speaker 04

It wasn't, there wasn't like a science to it. There was not, I don't know if this makes sense. There was no like equational thing. She was just being goofy.

• 8:24Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 8:25Speaker 04

But it, and it didn't seem disposable at the same time though. And that's really hard. It was like, wow, that's a thing I'm gonna remember. And that was fun, but she's still just loose and having fun with it.

• 8:35Amy Poehler?

  Yes, totally hear you.

• 8:36Speaker 04

  Does that make sense?

• 8:37Amy Poehler?

It, it's, it's a hundred percent the best way to sum her up. Like, I feel like when I was watching her do her sketches, I could sense her laughing about them the night before.

• 8:48Speaker 04

I remember she did a Penelope sketch. And Liza Minnelli was in it at the end. And uh.

• 8:56Amy Poehler?

  The Liza Minnelli?

• 8:58Speaker 04

The Liza Minnelli. And yes, the Liza. And she, and the thing was Penelope was always making things up. And it was like, oh, I can't do that because I'm going out with Liza Minnelli and a tomato tonight. Right?

• 9:09Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 9:10Speaker 04

And um. And Liza Minnelli showed up at the end. And when Liza Minnelli came out on stage and goes, hey, Penelope, I just saw Kristen just try so hard not to laugh. It was like just hearing her go, hey, hey. And she had a tomato with her. She's like, hey, Penelope, me and tomato are excited to go out to town with Kristen.

• 9:33Speaker 04

Biting her lips, like, found it so funny.

• 9:36Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 9:37Speaker 04

Another one I'll say real quick, but the other one I remember was I was, I was a game show host and a thing when, when Maya hosted and it came, it was a game show. She had written it with James and she was, before the sketch even started on air, Kristen was looking at me and laughing really hard. Didn't know why. She was just laughing and shaking her head like, your first line is so stupid. And I was kind of like, I think I, yeah. And then, and they had changed it between dress and air. And my first line was to Vanessa Bayer, who was a contestant. I go, before we went to the break, you said, you, you said the answer to the question was beef. Sorry, the correct answer was nine.

• 10:21Speaker 04

And as I was saying, Kristen was like shaking her head and laughing like, I'm sorry, dude.

• 10:32Speaker 04

Like, that's what I think of her is just like, she's just having fun, you know?

• 10:36Amy Poehler?

Yes, yes. So well said. So well said. Um, okay. So do you have a question? Do you think I should ask her? Anything about anything? Doesn't have to be about SNL or comedy, but anything that I could ask her on your behalf or?

• 10:51Speaker 04

I, I'm just always curious if she was always that confident in that ability. Was that, was that a thing when she started at Groundlings? Did she come in going like, did, did she have, because as you said very well, she came in fully formed. And I was like, was it always that way? Because she had such a confidence in her ideas.

• 11:09Amy Poehler?

  Yes, yes.

• 11:11Speaker 04

That, that, that kind of, I remember asking her, I was like, how do you write this? Like, how did you do that? And she goes, I don't know. I just think it and I do it. You know, so she just always had such a massive confidence in her ideas.

• 11:25Amy Poehler?

It's a good, really good way to put it. That's a really good way to put it.

• 11:28Speaker 04

Forte was kind of that way, too.

• 11:29Amy Poehler?

  Totally.

• 11:31Speaker 04

Would do a thing and you would go, what? How did you? Where did that come from? And you know that look in their eyes where they're like, it never occurred to them? But that might be a crazy idea.

• 11:44Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 11:44Speaker 04

Like, my character has, remember I was in a sketch of hers and I feel like a character either. I did her a character had pepperoni nipples. Like nipples and pepperoni. I was like, where'd you come up with that? And it was like, looking at you like, well, we're on a sketch show, dude. You know? I would take it too literally. I don't know. But yeah, that would be a question. It was like, yeah, where did that? Was there ever a moment, early days, where it was that learned and honed? Or did that, did she just come out?

• 12:14Amy Poehler?

That's a great question. Thanks, Bill. I know Chris is gonna be so psyched we talked today. Thank you so much for doing it.

• 12:20Speaker 04

  All right.

• 12:21Amy Poehler?

All right. Thanks, buddy. Talk to you soon. Bye.

• 12:25Amy Poehler?

• 13:11Amy Poehler?

Hi Bud, thank you for doing this. You know, I know you don't do a lot of interviews. I feel very, I feel honored. I mean, you know, you do what you need to do for work.

• 13:22Speaker 05

  Exactly.

• 13:23Amy Poehler?

But you, and you follow through with your obligations with that.

• 13:26Speaker 05

Oh, yes, yes, I do my job.

• 13:28Amy Poehler?

Yes. But you don't love to, you know, you want to kind of keep your life private.

• 13:37Speaker 05

Yeah, and like if I'm promoting something, I'm happy to talk about that.

• 13:41Amy Poehler?

  Sure.

• 13:42Speaker 05

But you know, there's such a, the line is so blurred now. I'm happy to discuss anything with you because you're my friend, but you know.

• 13:49Amy Poehler?

  I know, it's, it's.

• 13:50Speaker 05

When it's someone that you don't know and they're asking you certain personal things, you're a little bit like, I don't know.

• 13:56Amy Poehler?

I know, and also I learned something from you many years ago that I think about all the time, which is also, I mean, I, what I love about how you interact with your work is like you put it out there, but you don't necessarily, you kind of just like put it out there and it's out there.

• 14:19Speaker 05

  I don't want to know.

• 14:20Amy Poehler?

I know, and it's such a great, it's very healthy.

• 14:23Speaker 05

  Because it doesn't matter.

• 14:25Amy Poehler?

  I know, I know, it doesn't.

• 14:26Speaker 05

And actually, I remember Sandberg telling me a long time ago, like during SNL, you can read a million reviews and you can quote the bad ones like word for word. Like I can remember things people said about me.

• 14:40Amy Poehler?

  Oh, yeah.

• 14:40Speaker 05

So I, like I just, having this movie come out, this kids movie, and I texted my publicist and I was like, "Don't send me anything."

• 14:49Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, don't send me anything.

• 14:50Speaker 05

I will probably call her at some point and say, "Did they hate it?

• 14:54Speaker 05

Do they like it?" But I don't want to be sent, because it just gets in your brain and it's not what your experience is. I'm like, I don't know. And I'm easily, I'm sensitive too.

• 15:06Amy Poehler?

Same, and I, you said something to me that I think about all the time, which is I had like an evening where I was, wore whatever, wore an outfit, felt good in it, had a good time, and then went home and saw the picture of it and just was like,

• 15:20Amy Poehler?

like just felt really sad. And you were like, "Oh, I don't like, I don't do that. I don't look at pictures after an event or something." Like I trust that where, you know, like I just kind of like remember the feeling of it. And I'm working with great people and I, when I head out the door, I feel good and I like, like leave it at that. And I think about it all the time because. Bigger than like how we look. It's just like the idea of like the world weighing in on your mental.

• 15:44Speaker 05

Yeah, and believe me, I got there because I would go and look. And then I would just feel horrible. I'm like, but wait, why do I feel bad?

• 15:51Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 15:51Speaker 05

I thought I liked it. And then in my mind, I'm like, well, now, did I? I just, yeah.

• 15:56Amy Poehler?

I know. So I think about you all the time when I do try, when I try not to look at pictures of myself. But we are going to change our faces into cats for this.

• 16:05Speaker 05

  Oh, great.

• 16:05Amy Poehler?

We're gonna put a cat filter on.

• 16:06Speaker 05

  And I want filters.

• 16:08Amy Poehler?

Yeah, we're gonna put, I'm gonna have flames coming out. We're gonna be, it's gonna be babies. This is good hang babies and we're gonna.

• 16:15Speaker 05

I want to look 30 years younger, but naturally.

• 16:19Amy Poehler?

You look incredible. You look incredible. And I do feel like you are like, I don't, I wouldn't consider you an introvert, but I do think you're probably more introverted than people would assume, right?

• 16:29Speaker 05

  I would agree with that.

• 16:30Amy Poehler?

  Do you, does that happen?

• 16:31Speaker 05

And I find people are often disappointed. No, but it's true. I think also because our people know us, our origins into the public life is comedy. So people think if you're at a dinner table and someone says, Kristen, tell that story. And 14 people look at you, that's my nightmare. I'm so bad at it. I'm really bad. And, and I was talking to my husband about it. I was like, I'm really bad at like telling stories. And he's like, yeah.

• 17:01Amy Poehler?

  He's like, I've noticed.

• 17:02Speaker 05

You're, you are. And I was a little shocked, but then it made me realize that like, it's true. I, I don't like that. I don't, I'm not good at it. Halfway through, I realize everyone's looking at me. And then I'm like, how did this, how does this end? And like, I'm not. And some people are so good at it.

• 17:21Amy Poehler?

Oh, yeah. And some people, when they go in to tell a story, they like settle in like, here we go. Like a warm sweater and I'm in.

• 17:28Speaker 05

And I'm like, don't stop because I don't want people to ask me to tell a story.

• 17:33Amy Poehler?

I know, because it's, it is, it is like, I mean. There's so much to talk to you about today. And like, I don't even know where to start because there's so much good stuff to talk about. I want to talk about growlings. I want to talk about the beginnings of things because I feel like, I don't think a lot of people know your beginnings of things. Like, what were you like as a kid? Were you? You've said that you didn't know, you said you had no, like, big plans to be an actor or performer at all. No.

• 18:01Speaker 05

No, I mean, I would like watch movies and be like, oh, yeah, I want to do that. But I think that's like, everybody wanted to.

• 18:09Amy Poehler?

Were you ever like in a school play or, or, you know?

• 18:13Speaker 05

  No, I mean, I.

• 18:15Amy Poehler?

An attention seeker in any way?

• 18:17Speaker 05

I think maybe a little bit just from like my parents getting divorced. And being like, I'm gonna cause trouble.

• 18:27Amy Poehler?

Oh, you became a little bit of a troublemaker?

• 18:29Speaker 05

  Yes, I did.

• 18:30Amy Poehler?

  Exciting!

• 18:31Speaker 05

I did, and I don't know if that turned into like.

• 18:34Amy Poehler?

But you caused a little problem.

• 18:36Speaker 05

I did, and I'm not bragging about it. I feel terrible, especially now that I'm a parent.

• 18:40Amy Poehler?

Well, but what kind, can you share any of?

• 18:42Speaker 05

I mean, I was, got detention a lot. I was suspended a handful of times.

• 18:47Amy Poehler?

  Exciting!

• 18:48Speaker 05

I've had police come to my house. For like a prank, prank phone calling stuff.

• 18:52Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 18:53Speaker 05

  But still, they came.

• 18:54Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 18:55Speaker 05

Um, and that was scary. But I was, I think because, and I, and I, I'm bringing it back to like, parents divorce, which, don't turn this off, it's gonna be funny.

• 19:09Speaker 05

  It really affected my life.

• 19:10Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 19:10Speaker 05

And I think I went into like my friend group, which I think happens a lot. Where if things are like uncertain at home, like your friends become your family. And I was just always with my friends and always sleeping over at other people's houses. And some of the people I was hanging out with were like.

• 19:32Speaker 05

  Troublemakers, I guess.

• 19:33Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 19:34Speaker 05

And I just kind of like got in with a little bit of the wrong crowd. I think, young. And then I moved when my mom moved to Rochester and I moved with her. And at the time, I was like, I don't want to move. These are my friends. But thank God, that like saved my life.

• 19:49Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 19:49Speaker 05

  It really saved my life.

• 19:50Amy Poehler?

It is true, like especially now that you have kids, you know, we know that like it, that whoever you're around, the proximity of who you're around can really dictate what kind of choices you make.

• 20:02Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 20:03Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 20:03Speaker 05

And it's hard as a parent to like, I mean, my kids are five, so I'm not, I can't totally.

• 20:08Amy Poehler?

But even when my kids were five, you'd see other five year olds, you'd be like, you gotta stay away from them.

• 20:12Speaker 05

  I know.

• 20:12Amy Poehler?

You're like, do you really want to have a playdate with them?

• 20:14Speaker 05

  Really?

• 20:16Speaker 05

  No.

• 20:16Amy Poehler?

  Be like, are you sure?

• 20:17Speaker 05

I don't know. I mean, they seem nice, but.

• 20:19Amy Poehler?

And then you just pick up, you just hold the phone upside down and you're like, I just called their mom and they're not home.

• 20:24Speaker 05

They've moved. They'll be at school Monday, but they've moved.

• 20:27Amy Poehler?

Their mom said no more playdates. Okay, so you, but where do you grow up? Where, where's hometown?

• 20:32Speaker 05

  I was in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

• 20:34Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 20:35Speaker 05

  Yes, like Amish town.

• 20:38Amy Poehler?

Which also probably added to a little bit of the mischief, like.

• 20:41Speaker 05

Yeah, because there wasn't a lot to do, you know, like playing, playing down at the creek. And running through the cornfields. I really was. But yeah, I, I don't know. I don't know if it's the place or just who I was hanging out with. I don't know.

• 20:58Amy Poehler?

Yeah. And then is it really true that a psychic told you that you were an actress?

• 21:05Speaker 05

Let me just clarify this story.

• 21:06Amy Poehler?

Okay, is that a fake story?

• 21:07Speaker 05

  Because it's not.

• 21:08Amy Poehler?

  Fake news.

• 21:08Speaker 05

It's not totally fake. Um, I'll give you like the short version, but I was living in Arizona. I was going to school there. I was at the University of Arizona in Tucson and I did not really want to be there. And I just felt like I was supposed to be. Somewhere else, I was an art major and I just, I wasn't like, I wasn't connecting with something. I did take an acting class. It was like Acting 101. I think that's what it was called.

• 21:39Speaker 05

And I was terrified to do it because I hated speaking in front of the class. Like would skip school, which is always the worst thing because then you have to come back on a different day and do the book report when everyone else is like, we did this last week. It's just even more awkward. But I hated speaking in front of the class. Like I would just get anxiety. So I didn't want to take this class. I took it. I loved it.

• 22:06Speaker 05

And I was like, I don't want to be here. I'm not supposed to be here. And I do have this theory that if you ask yourself questions in the mirror, you cannot lie to yourself. And it's very, uh.

• 22:20Amy Poehler?

  Ooh.

• 22:21Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 22:21Amy Poehler?

  That's deep.

• 22:22Speaker 05

Like looking in the mirror and just being like, where, what do you want to do? And it was like, I want to move to LA and try to be an actor. And that had kind of never come out of my mouth before. It just seemed like something so

• 22:39Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 22:39Speaker 05

far. I'm not, I just didn't seem like anything that would ever happen. So, and at this time in Arizona, I was like, you know, going to like spiritual bookstores as we do in our twenties.

• 22:54Amy Poehler?

  Getting crystals.

• 22:55Speaker 05

Oh my God, pendulums, the tarot. Like I was like really, in like a nice, like healthy way.

• 23:02Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 23:03Speaker 05

And I wasn't like doing voodoo or anything.

• 23:07Speaker 05

And I went into this bookstore and there was a sign that was like, I swear it said like Psychic Mike. It was like a dollar a minute. And I was like, I'm going to go see that guy. And I went in and I sat down and he was like, oh, give me your ring. And he was like, holding my ring. And he was like, he's like, what are you doing here? He's like, why are you here? He's like, you should have been in LA like a year ago.

• 23:28Amy Poehler?

No way. Just out of the blue?

• 23:30Speaker 05

  Swear on my life.

• 23:31Amy Poehler?

  Love it.

• 23:32Speaker 05

He could have said that to every person that walked in there.

• 23:37Amy Poehler?

He's like, what are you doing here? That's what he says to every person.

• 23:40Speaker 05

And they're just like, because no one knows. You don't go into a psychic because you know what you're doing here.

• 23:44Amy Poehler?

  Right, exactly.

• 23:45Speaker 05

  But I.

• 23:47Speaker 05

I like went home and packed up my car.

• 23:49Amy Poehler?

  Whoa.

• 23:50Speaker 05

And my, cause my roommate at the time lived in LA. And I was like, can I come stay with you? Didn't tell my parents. Packed up my car.

• 23:57Amy Poehler?

  Bad girl.

• 23:58Speaker 05

Drugged my cat. Drove to LA and just.

• 24:05Amy Poehler?

  And quit, quit, quit school?

• 24:06Speaker 05

  Quit school.

• 24:07Amy Poehler?

Dang, you are a rebel wig. You're, yes, you're a rebel.

• 24:12Speaker 05

It was very, uh, I think because I knew someone.

• 24:17Amy Poehler?

  Sure.

• 24:18Speaker 05

  It was less scary.

• 24:19Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 24:19Speaker 05

Um, but yeah, I had to like get an apartment and got a job.

• 24:26Amy Poehler?

I mean, back then it was, you only needed to know like one person to make a humongous career and life change. It was like, I'll just go, same thing with me. I knew someone who had graduated from college. He was my old roommate who was living in Chicago. So I was like, all right, I'll just move to Chicago. Like she's there. Like that's all you needed was one person.

• 24:43Speaker 05

And we didn't have like phones.

• 24:46Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 24:46Speaker 05

  Or anything like that.

• 24:48Amy Poehler?

  We just drove.

• 24:49Speaker 05

  We just drove.

• 24:50Amy Poehler?

With like a map. And a cat and a map. And we were just like, and then we just looked at, and then the signs were just arrows. It just said Hollywood.

• 24:58Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 24:59Amy Poehler?

  It just said success.

• 25:00Speaker 05

  Acting town.

• 25:01Amy Poehler?

Hollywood, acting town. And you just, and you pulled up. So you go to Groundlings. What, what year are you getting Groundlings? What year do you start?

• 25:07Speaker 05

I, I waited a couple of years. Cause once I got to LA, I was like, I've never acted before.

• 25:15Amy Poehler?

Oh, so you didn't start right away?

• 25:17Speaker 05

I was like, what? This town is full of, every person here is trying to do that. And I, I got freaked out and I worked at like a hot dog restaurant. And then I worked at anthropology and I was like doing all these like odd jobs. And then, um, a friend of mine that I was working for when I was doing like painting, I'd had a million jobs. He was like, have you ever been to the Groundlings? And I was like, no, what is it? And he's like, you should go. He's like, I just think you'd like it. And yeah, that first show, I'd never seen improv. I'd never seen like live sketch, but it was like Jen Coolidge,

• 25:56Speaker 05

  Michael Hitchcock.

• 26:00Speaker 05

And I was just like, this is what I want to do.

• 26:03Amy Poehler?

  Wow, yeah.

• 26:04Speaker 05

This is it. Oh, my God, they're just making stuff up.

• 26:08Speaker 05

I was like, I don't have to like read and say a line a certain way that's like right or wrong. I could just like do that.

• 26:14Amy Poehler?

And it was like nine, it was the 90s. So you're doing sketch and improv and like, like everybody like hoping to get on SNL.

• 26:22Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 26:23Amy Poehler?

Just like that was the goal.

• 26:24Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 26:25Amy Poehler?

Was like, and you're watching people go and get on SNL.

• 26:28Speaker 05

Yeah. And then Mad TV came out. And that was the thing. And a lot of people were auditioning for that.

• 26:33Amy Poehler?

  Right, right.

• 26:34Speaker 05

Because that was happening out here.

• 26:35Amy Poehler?

I remember there was that time when it was like, you can't audition for Mad TV and SNL. Like, it was very like one or the other, like choose now. And it was like, babe, no one's offering me either job.

• 26:45Amy Poehler?

You're like having imaginary conversations in your head about like, if Mad TV asks, I'm gonna say no. It's like, they're not asking.

• 26:55Speaker 05

Oh, wait, did you do sketch in college?

• 26:57Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I did like improv and like an improv group in college. And we did like sketches at the end of the show. And it was, and you know, it was, I loved my improv group. It was called My Mother's Fleabag, which is like, sure. And, you know, I love an improv group name. And My Mother's Fleabag had been around forever, you know, and it was like a little frat for like a little nerdy frat or sorority. And we had all these rituals and customs. And at the end of our show, we would go, it's, it's, it's My Mother's Fleabag. Like as if it was like live from South, you know, like we were doing some like version of SNL. And we would do sketches and improv.

• 27:35Speaker 05

  Oh, that's so cute.

• 27:36Amy Poehler?

But you didn't do any sketch or improv in, at University of Arizona?

• 27:39Speaker 05

  No, no, no, no, no.

• 27:40Amy Poehler?

  Interesting. Amazing.

• 27:42Speaker 05

  No, that was much later.

• 27:43Amy Poehler?

You go, can you, I mean, your audition for SNL.

• 27:49Amy Poehler?

Is it is weird to like have auditions out in the world? I don't know. Did you watch any of the 50th stuff when they were showing?

• 27:56Speaker 05

I haven't watched that yet. No, and I've never seen my audition. I never want to ever see it because I did two.

• 28:04Amy Poehler?

Okay, you auditioned and then what happened?

• 28:07Speaker 05

  Well.

• 28:08Amy Poehler?

Okay, you auditioned once and then you got it and you turned it down?

• 28:11Speaker 05

Turned it down because Mad TV was coming back. No, I, uh, I auditioned and then I didn't hear anything. And then the season started.

• 28:22Amy Poehler?

And then you're like, I'm not on, okay.

• 28:23Speaker 05

I'm not there. And then, oh, wait, no, how did it go? Maybe, no, no, maybe that's wrong. I auditioned, no, that's not right. I auditioned, uh, didn't hear anything. Then they asked me to audition again. And I was like, I did everything.

• 28:44Amy Poehler?

  Oh, that's a nightmare.

• 28:46Speaker 05

Okay, I don't even know what was in that second audition. And then, and then I didn't hear anything. And then the season started. And that's when I was like, I didn't get it. No, but then they called me and they were like, can you, you, we'd love, we have a spot for you, whatever. I forget the awarding, can you come in like two weeks?

• 29:03Amy Poehler?

I'm finding that out that they hired you after the season had started?

• 29:07Speaker 05

Yeah, you guys had done three shows. And then they were like, come watch, uh, I, I literally got there on like, uh, Friday. I came, I watched Lance Armstrong's show. And then.

• 29:22Amy Poehler?

  Comedian, comedy's Lance Armstrong.

• 29:26Speaker 05

But I remember being like, what? Because to watch a show from the floor, no matter what is intense. But knowing that I was starting on Monday and nobody.

• 29:37Amy Poehler?

  No, no one's.

• 29:38Speaker 05

Knew because nobody told anyone that I was starting.

• 29:40Amy Poehler?

SNL is notoriously not good at onboarding.

• 29:44Speaker 05

  No, no.

• 29:45Amy Poehler?

  They're not good at onboarding.

• 29:46Speaker 05

And then I just showed up on Monday, but yeah. But I, I do remember going to the party and going outside. And calling my friend and like sobbing. Cause I was like, what? I was so overwhelmed. I didn't like know anybody. And I'm like in, I was like in New York. You know what I mean? I didn't, I didn't know the city and I was so scared.

• 30:11Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 30:11Speaker 05

Cause I knew no matter what, I was gonna be on. And I just didn't know what, like, how do you get there? From never even being on the floor. To like eight days later or whatever, like being on the show.

• 30:23Amy Poehler?

I mean, the only thing I compare it to, and I know it sounds kinda cheesy, but it feels like it is like an emergency room where someone's like, you're gonna have to save people's lives. Just watch what we're doing now. That was how it felt. You were like, and again, it's not saving people's lives, what we did. But like, it's like this really well-run emergency room where everyone knows what they're doing and they have a part and you're just like in everyone's way.

• 30:45Speaker 05

Do you need a scalpel? No.

• 30:49Amy Poehler?

Totally. And they're like, you have to know how to do this. Like, no one's gonna teach you.

• 30:53Speaker 05

Yeah, or like, you know, we have a meeting in 10 minutes. It's like, no.

• 30:57Amy Poehler?

  No one told me.

• 31:02Speaker 05

Did that happen when you were there?

• 31:03Amy Poehler?

Oh, my God. I mean, I started at nine 11, so they were-

• 31:06Speaker 05

  That was your first show?

• 31:08Amy Poehler?

  That's right. When, when, when-

• 31:11Speaker 05

  Cut to commercial.

• 31:13Amy Poehler?

Cut to commercial. When, when Rudy Giuliani-

• 31:15Speaker 05

  Yeah, you can cut.

• 31:17Amy Poehler?

Go to this cam and just cut to commercial. Yeah, when Rudy Giuliani said like, why be funny? And Lauren, uh, he's, Lauren said, can we be funny? And Rudy Giuliani said, well, I start now. And the first responders were onstage. That was my first show. And it was like, and everyone was like, I think comedy's over and, and you know-

• 31:33Speaker 05

  But here.

• 31:33Amy Poehler?

And I remember thinking, well, maybe like hang in there for six bar months. So I can just tell my parents that I did the show. Yeah, that was, and that was-

• 31:41Speaker 05

  I don't think I knew that.

• 31:43Amy Poehler?

And talk about no, no, not, not, no one told you where the meeting was, but people were like fleeing the building.

• 31:49Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 31:49Amy Poehler?

Because there was anthrax in it. So, um-

• 31:53Speaker 05

  What?

• 31:53Amy Poehler?

  There was anthrax sent to-

• 31:56Speaker 05

  Oh, right, right, right.

• 31:57Amy Poehler?

30 Rock. And like two or three weeks in, people were running out of the building. And I was like, where's everyone going? And they're like, we're leaving because there's anthrax in the building. I was like, so we should go? We should leave then? I don't wanna get in trouble. So, yeah, so you and I both had- It's so, there was no, you know, there was obviously Shoemaker being one of them. Like, great producers who took us aside and said like- Make sure you do this, whatever. But you were really thrown to the wolves, which I guess is kind of like how the show is.

• 32:23Speaker 05

  And I think that's why it's great.

• 32:25Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I know. But Wig, from the minute you started, and I did watch your audition, and it's so good. And it's every single character, I think every single character in your audition ends up being a fully realized character on the show, which is amazing.

• 32:40Speaker 05

  I don't, that can't be true.

• 32:42Amy Poehler?

I think it's true. And you're so, like, you arrive at that show, in my opinion, ready and confident to try what is the job, which is like to try your dumb ideas. Do you think it was Groundlings that got you ready for that? Like, do you think that's what?

• 33:00Speaker 05

I think Groundlings helped me realize what I do and my voice, like, as a writer and as a performer. So I was kind of like, I'm gonna do that, and if that doesn't work, then I know I'm not gonna, like, work here. So I remember that first, like, Tuesday, no, Wednesday, read-through.

• 33:22Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 33:23Speaker 05

Oh, my god. I was like, if they don't get it, like, this is where I know if, like, it doesn't translate beyond that theater on Melrose and that, like, I'm in a different place. Do you know what I mean?

• 33:34Amy Poehler?

Yes, but that's, you know, okay. So we do this thing on the show where we talk to, we talk well behind people's backs. We talked to Bill Hader today.

• 33:41Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 33:42Amy Poehler?

And your brother. And Hader and I were talking about you and how great you are. And we were saying that there's this feeling that we always got from you, which is exactly that, which is like, you were putting up stuff that made you laugh, and you were like, well, this is what I enjoy. It was, you know, there wasn't that feeling of like, let me try to get something that might get on, or let me try to get something that might please the host, or whatever. It was always like your, like, confidence in your idea. And his question for you is the one that, like, I feel like I'm asking right now, which is like, when, how did you get the confidence in your own ideas? Where did it come from?

• 34:22Speaker 05

I, it's weird, because I don't see it as confidence. I think, I just kind of, I don't know. I'm just talking. I've never really answered this. But I think I kind of wanted to know where I was in the world as far as, like, my...

• 34:44Speaker 05

  Uh, point of view.

• 34:46Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm.

• 34:47Speaker 05

And like, the more I would put up that I thought was funny, the more I could kind of like hone what, what kind of works and what doesn't. Does that make sense?

• 34:57Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 34:58Speaker 05

But I do remember Forte telling me once in his office, me saying something like, I don't know if Lorne would like this. And he was like, don't do that. He's like, never write for, if you think someone else is gonna think this is funny. He's like, write if like, you think it's funny. And I, like, I always carried that with me.

• 35:18Amy Poehler?

I mean, you and Will Forte share that. You guys both share that feeling of like, when it comes from either one of you, there's no doubt that the two of you have been laughing about it. And like, you find it the funniest.

• 35:31Speaker 05

Just die a slow death. But I love those times too.

• 35:37Amy Poehler?

  Yes, same.

• 35:38Speaker 05

Writing those, I remember you and I wrote something that to this day, like, James and I quote, when we were like, performers in like, a cafe.

• 35:48Amy Poehler?

Oh, and it died a terrible death.

• 35:50Speaker 05

And I remember we were like, describing some, the way someone looked as a pencil because they had a yellow outfit on and like, a pink hat or something. We just said they looked like a pencil. I don't know. Well, it didn't work here.

• 36:08Speaker 05

Maybe the way James, but there was something about it that when you're doing it and you know that little moment, where like, this is the little hook where the audience laughs, and when they don't, and you have like, four more minutes.

• 36:21Amy Poehler?

Oh, I know. It's exquisite, though. It's, it's like a sweat that if you get through the fever of it, then you feel like you, your immune system is like, stronger.

• 36:31Speaker 05

Also, you were seeing your heroes. I'm sorry, for me, you included. Everyone's doing.

• 36:38Speaker 05

Their best and everyone has stuff. Sometimes it doesn't work.

• 36:41Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 36:41Speaker 05

And you're like, oh, okay. This happens to everybody.

• 36:44Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 36:45Speaker 05

But the cool thing about it is when you show up and there's like 50 sketches to read, the people, people think that they're gonna work and you just never know.

• 36:55Amy Poehler?

I know, but so much of your stuff worked, like crushed. I mean, it's like, okay, well, you've talked about this and I've heard you talk about it and it really made me laugh. You're for the first sketch you were in at SNL.

• 37:08Speaker 05

  Oh, yeah.

• 37:09Amy Poehler?

  Was.

• 37:09Speaker 05

  When you, right?

• 37:13Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 37:13Speaker 05

  Were pregnant in the butt.

• 37:16Amy Poehler?

  My character was pregnant.

• 37:17Speaker 05

Your character. But it was, it's funny because back it up even to like my first pitch. Cause that was JB's move.

• 37:26Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 37:27Speaker 05

The great writer and performer JB's move. The great everything.

• 37:30Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 37:30Speaker 05

  The best pitcher.

• 37:31Amy Poehler?

  Incredible.

• 37:32Speaker 05

And he pitched this thing where you were pregnant in the butt and everyone was laughing and I didn't know that like he's like, he just does like funny pitches.

• 37:39Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 37:40Speaker 05

  And he wrote it.

• 37:41Amy Poehler?

I think, and he often, he often JB, I think you often pitch stuff that maybe you weren't gonna write.

• 37:47Speaker 05

Yes. Oh, no, I always pitched stuff I wasn't gonna write.

• 37:49Amy Poehler?

That was kind of the thing on Monday night, you would be like, um, and you just kind of bullshit your way to get a laugh. And then you'd be like, okay, now I really have to buckle down. But I think because the response was so funny, JB was like, I should write this.

• 38:01Speaker 05

That's the other thing. And you're like, I wasn't really gonna write that thing.

• 38:03Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 38:04Speaker 05

It was my very first sketch. Jason Lee.

• 38:09Amy Poehler?

  Jason Lee was the host.

• 38:10Speaker 05

  Foo Fighters.

• 38:11Amy Poehler?

  Yes. Foo Fighters.

• 38:12Speaker 05

Foo Fighters, I did say that.

• 38:14Amy Poehler?

  Foo Fighters, ah.

• 38:18Speaker 05

I'm so happy that was my first sketch.

• 38:20Amy Poehler?

That was your first sketch. And you remember the first like, I mean, the first character, you have so many, but do you remember the first one? That was a recurring that you thought, was it Target Lady? Like where you felt like, oh, I'm gonna get to do this again. Like I have some kind of.

• 38:33Speaker 05

  I don't know.

• 38:35Amy Poehler?

I know. It might, was it A-holes with Sudeikis?

• 38:37Speaker 05

It was either A-holes or Target Lady. Yeah.

• 38:40Amy Poehler?

I mean, for people who don't remember, um, you know, Kristen has done so many characters. I mean, we could talk about them all day, but there was, there was Target Lady, who was of course very, very excited about things getting approved.

• 38:53Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 38:54Amy Poehler?

And had an incredible haircut, great wigs.

• 38:56Speaker 05

  Yeah, thank you.

• 38:57Amy Poehler?

Um, incredible wig. And then another great wig and another character was A-holes, which is Sudeikis, Jason Sudeikis. And you, and you guys were kind of like. Just like the worst people to show up anywhere.

• 39:07Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah.

• 39:08Amy Poehler?

Yeah, and you did a great move where you would play with your hair and chew gum.

• 39:14Speaker 05

  Real simple.

• 39:17Amy Poehler?

So there you are, you're at SNL crushing it. Bridesmaids comes out. Bridesmaids comes out while you're on the show.

• 39:23Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 39:24Amy Poehler?

That's, I don't think people understand that. I, I mean, I don't think I did either, the, the timeline of that. You were still on the show when the gigantic, incredible explosion that is Bridesmaids happens and you're still, and you know, a lot of people have to kind of launch and then figure out their, their way after they leave the show. You're kind of having this moment while you're still having a full-time job on the show. What was that like? Was it hard to balance like going back and forth or shooting or press or any of that stuff, or do you remember it being kind of smooth?

• 39:56Speaker 05

I don't really think I knew how well it was doing until like later. Yeah. Until I was off the show.

• 40:02Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you had some more perspective on it?

• 40:04Speaker 05

  I think so.

• 40:05Amy Poehler?

And you and Annie Marmalot, who wrote it together?

• 40:07Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 40:07Amy Poehler?

Like, did you guys get to have a moment where you said, looked at each other and said like, "Holy shit"?

• 40:12Speaker 05

  Later.

• 40:13Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 40:13Speaker 05

Because I remember after opening weekend, they were like, "Well, we tried." And we were like, "Sorry."

• 40:21Amy Poehler?

  Really?

• 40:22Speaker 05

Yeah. Because you know, opening weekend was always the thing.

• 40:25Amy Poehler?

  Sure, sure, sure.

• 40:25Speaker 05

And it was a comedy and it didn't make a certain

• 40:27Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 40:27Speaker 05

thing and we were like, "Oh, well, okay." We just thought like, "That was it."

• 40:34Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 40:35Speaker 05

And then I think just more and more people kept seeing it and then

• 40:37Amy Poehler?

  It was a grower.

• 40:38Speaker 05

it kind of happened later. Yeah, it was a grower.

• 40:40Amy Poehler?

Wow, that's so cool. I mean, it's still, we talk, we're talking about stuff from 20 years ago, but it still remains a lot of people's favorite comedy and it's still a speck for what it looks like to have like a bunch of women in a film together, writing their own material. Like, like what a hard, well-done, mostly female comedy. Like, it's still such a superior piece of work. Wig?

• 41:06Speaker 05

  Thank you, Amy.

• 41:07Amy Poehler?

  You're welcome. No question.

• 41:11Speaker 05

  Got to commercial.

• 41:12Amy Poehler?

• 43:46Amy Poehler?

There's so many funny characters that I want to talk about, but I won't embarrass you by going through them. But I've said this to you before. My favorite character is the surprise lady.

• 43:56Speaker 05

Thanks. That's one of my favorites.

• 43:58Amy Poehler?

I love her. I love her for a million reasons. I love her because the way you play her is so funny. I love her wig, fantastic wig.

• 44:06Speaker 05

  Oh, always in a turtleneck.

• 44:07Amy Poehler?

  Always.

• 44:09Speaker 05

Well, she had died in it.

• 44:10Amy Poehler?

She had died in it. That's right. That's right. Did you write it?

• 44:17Speaker 05

I think that was in the script that we pulled it over. Yes.

• 44:22Speaker 05

And when I say that was one of my favorites, that comes from doing it.

• 44:26Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 44:27Speaker 05

Like, I like being in a sketch where there's a lot of people and there are moments where everyone is looking around. Like, what is going on? I love that moment.

• 44:40Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 44:41Speaker 05

I love a cut to Keenan just...

• 44:45Amy Poehler?

Like, we gotta get out of here. Like, this lady is nuts.

• 44:49Speaker 05

  It's my favorite thing.

• 44:49Amy Poehler?

That actually would be a really good way to sum up a lot of your characters.

• 44:53Speaker 05

Oh, yeah. And most of my sketches, if you go back and look, like, no, you gotta cut to people being weirded out by me to remind the audience that.

• 45:01Amy Poehler?

But why I love the surprise lady so much is because there's a lot of wig in it, I think. Because she is nervous but excited. And she loves a party. And she cannot wait to deliver that good news. She can't wait. And the physicality of her and the way... So funny. God, I just watch clips of it all the time.

• 45:28Speaker 05

I love it. Oh, my God.

• 45:30Amy Poehler?

I love it so much. It's so funny and stupid. Funny and stupid.

• 45:35Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 45:35Amy Poehler?

  Which is the best.

• 45:36Speaker 05

Which we know is the highest praise in comedy.

• 45:38Amy Poehler?

Agree. Like, the more people go, "Ugh."

• 45:42Speaker 05

  Oh, that's so dumb.

• 45:44Amy Poehler?

And you're like, "Yay, I did it." Okay, speaking of hilarious, funny, and physical, can you just talk for a minute about what it's like to work with Carol Burnett? On... Your season is coming out. Season two is coming out in November. Okay.

• 45:59Speaker 05

  November 12. Yes.

• 46:00Amy Poehler?

  Palm Royale.

• 46:04Speaker 05

So many things I could say about Carol. When I met her, I just fully cried. And I was not expecting it. And I don't, that is never, except when my kids were born and I saw them and I cried. I can't remember a time when I just, I didn't think I was gonna cry. And then they just, it just like burst out of my eyes. I wasn't expecting it. I, I watched her as a kid. There's, uh, she's, as you know, she's just the greatest person.

• 46:35Amy Poehler?

She was very important to us.

• 46:36Speaker 05

Yes, so important to us. And the fact that she just did it.

• 46:40Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 46:41Speaker 05

  As a woman.

• 46:42Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 46:42Speaker 05

During that time, and so many people said no.

• 46:45Amy Poehler?

It makes perfect sense that you guys were working together because you definitely have, I mean, you have that thing that she has, um, which is you're able to enter a scene and just dominate in that way, in a hilarious, joyful, and confident way. But you also like tiny, small, and grounded things too. I think you have a lot of other interests.

• 47:09Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 47:09Amy Poehler?

Like, I actually think you, like, for people who don't know, you're, you're an artist. You love to, and you're a musician. What's your relationship to music and singing? And making music?

• 47:20Speaker 05

Well, music is definitely the thing that I need to create anything else. Like, if I'm gonna draw, I have to have music on. Or if I'm writing something, it's always to like music that I'm picturing will be in this part of the thing. I think it like opens up that part of my brain.

• 47:40Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 47:40Speaker 05

That allows me to go in and be like, what do you really think? Because if I just sit there, I think like, oh, what will they think? Does that make sense?

• 47:49Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, for sure.

• 47:50Speaker 05

Um, and then, I mean, I've always sang, like, I sang in, like, you know, the choir when I was a kid.

• 47:58Amy Poehler?

Have you ever thought about wanting to sing?

• 48:01Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 48:01Amy Poehler?

  Sing, sing?

• 48:02Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 48:02Amy Poehler?

Like, I mean, you do sing, sing, but like.

• 48:04Speaker 05

But I would love to do like a.

• 48:05Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 48:06Speaker 05

  Help, not like a.

• 48:07Amy Poehler?

  I know, do a record.

• 48:08Speaker 05

  Record.

• 48:08Amy Poehler?

  Do a record.

• 48:09Speaker 05

I would love to do that.

• 48:10Amy Poehler?

  You should. You should.

• 48:12Speaker 05

But I don't even know how to, like, get started.

• 48:15Amy Poehler?

  Just this, just, you just.

• 48:17Speaker 05

Can you weigh in on the comments on this, guys?

• 48:20Amy Poehler?

  How does Kristin get started?

• 48:21Speaker 05

How do you get into the music business?

• 48:25Amy Poehler?

It also feels like you could dip your toe into some version of it where it didn't have to feel so like...

• 48:32Speaker 05

  Yeah, like a thing.

• 48:33Amy Poehler?

Yeah, like you could join someone's band.

• 48:37Speaker 05

  Whose band?

• 48:37Amy Poehler?

  Should you join?

• 48:40Speaker 05

Again, weigh in if you've got a band.

• 48:44Speaker 05

Just take them in a new direction.

• 48:47Amy Poehler?

  Just quieter.

• 48:48Speaker 05

Just a little bit quieter. Just calling them up, be like, guys, I know you have your thing.

• 48:53Amy Poehler?

  And your thing works great.

• 48:55Speaker 05

You've been doing it a long time.

• 48:57Amy Poehler?

And we think, what if you just... And your fans would love to sit down and I've got the music for it.

• 49:02Speaker 05

Your fans would love to put their arms down.

• 49:04Amy Poehler?

Do you still go to rock shows anymore? When we were young and out and about, we did it up. We did it up.

• 49:12Speaker 05

That's why those, honestly, the best years of my life, like being in New York and...

• 49:15Amy Poehler?

And being young and... We did it up. And now I do not do it. No. Don't do it.

• 49:24Speaker 05

The thought of going to a concert.

• 49:26Amy Poehler?

The thought of getting ready to go out at 11 o'clock, which is what I used to do.

• 49:30Speaker 05

  Oh, my God, never.

• 49:33Amy Poehler?

  Can you imagine?

• 49:33Speaker 05

I go out to dinner with my friends at 6 o'clock.

• 49:36Amy Poehler?

  Okay, let's talk about sleep.

• 49:37Speaker 05

6 P.M. Because I want to be home.

• 49:39Amy Poehler?

I love to eat dinner at 6 P.M.

• 49:41Speaker 05

  Me too.

• 49:42Amy Poehler?

  What's your ideal bedtime?

• 49:44Speaker 05

Well, you mean sleep or get in the bed?

• 49:46Amy Poehler?

  Great question.

• 49:47Speaker 05

Because those are different from hours.

• 49:50Amy Poehler?

I would say, what is your ideal time to be in bed? When do you try to get in bed?

• 49:57Speaker 05

  Like 8:30, 9 o'clock.

• 49:58Amy Poehler?

  Love it.

• 49:59Speaker 05

  Asleep by 10...

• 50:03Speaker 05

  10:30?

• 50:04Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 50:04Speaker 05

Because I do like waking up early.

• 50:06Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 50:06Speaker 05

When everyone else is asleep, so I can have my little quiet time.

• 50:10Amy Poehler?

Yeah, because you have little ones and you have to kind of get ready for that. Because morning is intense.

• 50:14Speaker 05

  Morning's tough.

• 50:14Amy Poehler?

Yeah, now that I have teenagers, it's really funny now. Like, my mornings are... I have five hours before people wake up. I'm like, it's 10:30.

• 50:23Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 50:24Amy Poehler?

  You have to get up.

• 50:24Speaker 05

Yeah, but don't they say it's like a brain thing?

• 50:27Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you're supposed to let them sleep.

• 50:29Speaker 05

  Like a teenager wrote that.

• 50:32Amy Poehler?

It's like, Mom, here, I heard it was a brain thing.

• 50:34Speaker 05

I read this article. You're supposed to sleep.

• 50:37Amy Poehler?

  The scientist said.

• 50:41Amy Poehler?

Okay, we're gonna get to Gabby's Dollhouse, which just came out.

• 50:44Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 50:44Amy Poehler?

So cute. Is it fun to play a villain? You've played it?

• 50:49Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 50:49Amy Poehler?

I know, that character looks so funny and fun.

• 50:52Speaker 05

Well, my kids love Gabby's Dollhouse.

• 50:54Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 50:54Speaker 05

And so I knew that this was gonna be, this was gonna go a long way for me at home.

• 51:01Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 51:01Speaker 05

And then the script happened to be really cute and Ryan, Craig O, the director's dream.

• 51:07Amy Poehler?

  Awesome.

• 51:08Speaker 05

Um, yeah, and it was just really fun. And we had the premiere on Saturday and I got like a little emotional watching it because it's so positive. It is so, it's got such a great message. And you know, when you're in a theater, just with other people having the same experience and like you're just completely blocked out from what's going on in the world? There was just something so like, oh, this is gonna go out in the world. And it's like really nice.

• 51:39Amy Poehler?

Yeah. I feel you, man. It's like, the world is rough right now and it's like anything that's like some kind of like funny or peaceful, or I guess just like anything that just can like take you away.

• 51:52Speaker 05

I can't do anything dark right now.

• 51:53Amy Poehler?

No, no, I can't. It's already, everything is already so dark. I mean, that's why I ask my guests this and I'll ask you this is like, what, what's making you laugh? Like, I'm asking people all the time, like, what do you, what do you watch on?

• 52:08Speaker 05

We gotta fly. We gotta fly. All right.

• 52:11Amy Poehler?

Uh-oh, we gotta fly. Let's get it.

• 52:13Speaker 05

I was told there'd be no flies in here. You did a sweep before I got here.

• 52:17Amy Poehler?

I have a fake, I have fake, I have fake bread that has a quarter in it. Let's see if we can catch the fly with that.

• 52:24Speaker 05

  Why is there a quarter?

• 52:25Amy Poehler?

  I don't know, I think.

• 52:25Speaker 05

Cause you need to have something in there, right?

• 52:27Amy Poehler?

Yeah, it's a fake roll. And then it's ceramic and yeah, and then there's, there's change in it.

• 52:32Speaker 05

Do you have that thing sometimes where you feel bad for inanimate objects?

• 52:35Amy Poehler?

Yes, so do I! Have you seen Julio Torres's stuff? He does a bunch of stuff about with inanimate objects. He's a stand-up, he's hilarious.

• 52:43Speaker 05

  But I think that's like a thing.

• 52:44Amy Poehler?

And it is a very, where I look at things and I feel like, oh, he's lonely. Yeah, I do.

• 52:51Speaker 05

  Yes, that happens to me.

• 52:52Amy Poehler?

Yeah. How does it manifest for you? How do you see it?

• 52:55Speaker 05

I remember so specifically, I was in the bathroom and you know how you have like, it's like a pill thing and maybe it's like, I don't know if it was like allergy pills and you pop them through? And there's like two, right? And I needed two, but there was one left over. And so I grabbed that one and then one from the other one. And my dad was like, why didn't you just get two from this one? I was like, well, that one's been by itself for so long. And I feel like he thought that was cute, but I wonder if he was like, oh no. But I remember thinking, well, clearly I wouldn't just, these two have been together the whole time. This one's been by itself. Now I sound crazy.

• 53:34Amy Poehler?

  No, I completely relate.

• 53:37Speaker 05

Like, like when you're a kid, stuffed animals, like you have to like make sure that like they can breathe.

• 53:42Amy Poehler?

Why are you laughing? Yes, and I often rotate because I think, well, you've had a good view for a while. And this one has been back, I feel bad when I'm like, oh, this one has been behind the other one or in a drawer. And I'm like, that one has been in, in the dark for too long.

• 53:59Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 53:59Amy Poehler?

  I totally do that.

• 54:00Speaker 05

  Okay, me too.

• 54:01Amy Poehler?

And same with just random objects. And I wonder if there is some kind of like, what's the, we're anthropomorphizing things. We're making them feel like they're human, but there must be some kind of connection to like our...

• 54:14Speaker 05

Or maybe we don't want to be left alone. Cut to commercial.

• 54:21Amy Poehler?

Cut to commercial. Cut to a slow commercial.

• 54:24Speaker 05

  Is that lip gloss?

• 54:25Amy Poehler?

Cut to, cut to a sad lip gloss commercial.

• 54:31Speaker 05

Do you know how much money a makeup, that would be so smart.

• 54:34Amy Poehler?

  That would be smart.

• 54:35Speaker 05

Just having people put their makeup on, but everyone's sad.

• 54:38Amy Poehler?

  And they're crying.

• 54:39Speaker 05

Because people will be like, did you see that commercial?

• 54:41Amy Poehler?

  You're right. That's a great idea.

• 54:43Speaker 05

Everyone's so happy, like putting on their makeup. What if people are just bummed out?

• 54:46Amy Poehler?

You're so right. If they're bummed and tears are coming down and they were like...

• 54:50Speaker 05

I remember that. I'm buying that.

• 54:52Amy Poehler?

Or they come, they come home after a long night and they're like, they throw up and then they put their makeup back on.

• 54:56Speaker 05

Yes, and then they put it back on.

• 54:58Amy Poehler?

  You're so right.

• 54:58Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 54:59Amy Poehler?

  Clinic.

• 55:05Amy Poehler?

So what are you listening to, watching? Do you watch comedy? No. I know, it's hard, right? I can't do it.

• 55:14Speaker 05

I have a hard time watching. It's not hard, but as a kid, I think what made me fall in love with TV and film is that I would get completely lost in it. Now I'm like, oh, they shot this at night. Did they eat before? Like, is this the beginning of the night shoot?

• 55:34Amy Poehler?

Oh, his hair is different. Oh, his hair is different. They shot this out of order.

• 55:38Speaker 05

I notice that stuff and it drives me insane.

• 55:41Amy Poehler?

Me too. And my kids sometimes, you know, I'll be like, this isn't in Canada. They'll be like, Mom. And I go, it's not Canada.

• 55:48Speaker 05

  I totally noticed that too.

• 55:50Amy Poehler?

The trees, and they're just like, Mom, stop.

• 55:53Speaker 05

  I totally do that too.

• 55:55Amy Poehler?

  Okay, so.

• 55:56Speaker 05

  So I do watch reality.

• 55:58Amy Poehler?

  Ooh, what kind of reality?

• 56:00Speaker 05

  And I am not ashamed.

• 56:01Amy Poehler?

  You shouldn't be.

• 56:01Speaker 05

Oh, I'm a Bravo gal for sure.

• 56:03Amy Poehler?

Okay, what, who are you? Have you done the, have you done Andy Cohen and talked about, have you done that and talked about the House of, who are your faves? Who do you love?

• 56:14Speaker 05

So many. I mean, there's, it depends, like, different cities have different, I'm about to, Salt Lake just started.

• 56:22Amy Poehler?

  A new, a new season?

• 56:23Speaker 05

Yes, a new season of Salt Lake, which is one of my favorite cities.

• 56:28Amy Poehler?

  Okay, we're hearing up.

• 56:29Speaker 05

Do you have a lady? We got a back then.

• 56:30Amy Poehler?

Jenna just said, uh huh. What makes Salt Lake so good for people like myself that don't know?

• 56:34Speaker 05

  It's just bonkers.

• 56:38Amy Poehler?

  Great.

• 56:39Speaker 05

Everything that makes, the fashion, the, what, the ladies, they're just, I love it so much. I have noticed, like, at night, it probably isn't the best thing to watch before I go to sleep.

• 56:54Amy Poehler?

  It gives you nightmares?

• 56:55Speaker 05

Just because of the yelling and the brightness and like all the things you're not supposed to have before you go to sleep.

• 56:59Amy Poehler?

Right. The yelling and the brightness.

• 57:02Speaker 05

But I love, I love watching non-

• 57:07Speaker 05

  Acting.

• 57:08Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 57:09Speaker 05

It helps my brain not, it helps me turn it off a little bit.

• 57:13Amy Poehler?

Now, I get a little embarrassed for people and stressed for them.

• 57:18Speaker 05

  Watching.

• 57:19Amy Poehler?

  Reality.

• 57:20Speaker 05

A reality, yes. Oh, I, yes.

• 57:22Amy Poehler?

But, but what is it about watching non-acting that like relaxes you? Because I've heard that quite a bit from people who watch it. It's like, it's weirdly relaxing, even though there's like conflict and all that stuff. Can you, do you know why?

• 57:36Speaker 05

Well, I think with acting, you're watching someone who has looked at a scene, studied a scene. They're doing the scene, they've edited, it's the best version.

• 57:47Speaker 05

  There's effort there.

• 57:48Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 57:48Speaker 05

There's so many people working on it. And then with reality, it's just like, this just happened. These two people are talking.

• 57:54Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 57:55Speaker 05

And this lady said that thing. And oh, my God.

• 57:58Speaker 05

And I just, I don't know. I like just being out in the world and seeing these people.

• 58:03Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 58:04Speaker 05

Walk around and just their parties and their outfit.

• 58:08Amy Poehler?

  There's so many parties.

• 58:09Speaker 05

I love these women so much. They are my family.

• 58:12Amy Poehler?

Can we watch a clip from Salt Lake that you would, if you were to, if I've never, I've never watched Salt Lake.

• 58:19Speaker 05

  Oh, oh, my God.

• 58:20Amy Poehler?

I know this is hard, but what would be one?

• 58:22Speaker 05

I guess maybe when, when, what about when, when the, the van, when Jen Shaw gets, I would say.

• 58:28Amy Poehler?

  Jen Shaw van?

• 58:30Speaker 05

  Yes, Sprinter van.

• 58:31Amy Poehler?

  Sprinter van.

• 58:32Speaker 05

You can't just write Sprinter van because you will get every franchise. They're always in a Sprinter van going somewhere.

• 58:39Amy Poehler?

I genuinely don't know what I'm gonna see here.

• 58:42Speaker 05

Okay, should I give you some context?

• 58:43Amy Poehler?

  Please, please.

• 58:44Speaker 05

So Jen Shaw is currently, right, or she get out incarcerated?

• 58:50Amy Poehler?

  Incarcerated, okay.

• 58:51Speaker 05

She's incarcerated with Elizabeth Holmes. They're in the same.

• 58:55Amy Poehler?

And they're buddies. One can hope, one can hope.

• 59:00Speaker 05

They were going on a trip and the FBI.

• 59:06Amy Poehler?

  There's so much exciting laughter.

• 59:08Speaker 05

Are you laughing because this is what I'm taking my time up to talk about?

• 59:12Amy Poehler?

  No, I love it.

• 59:13Speaker 05

The FBI was raiding her, I'm just looking at you Jenna, raiding her house.

• 59:17Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 59:17Speaker 05

So she like didn't show up and it's the, all the girls on the van realizing what is happening. I'm not selling it as well. You have to, so here.

• 59:28Amy Poehler?

Okay, when the FBI shows up, it's this?

• 59:32Speaker 05

  Yeah, maybe that's it.

• 59:34Amy Poehler?

There's a couple here. But the police are looking for.

• 59:38Speaker 05

Oh, but it's when she's on, oh, this is what it is. She's on the van.

• 59:42Amy Poehler?

  She's in.

• 59:42Speaker 05

  And she's like, oh, okay.

• 59:45Amy Poehler?

  She finds out.

• 59:46Speaker 05

  And she leaves saying that.

• 59:48Speaker 06

  Her husband's in the hospital?

• 59:51Amy Poehler?

Oh, is that the clip where she goes on a long rant about my husband's in the hos-? No, that's not Jenna.

• 59:55Speaker 06

  No, no.

• 59:56Amy Poehler?

Okay. Um, okay, here we go. Let's see what this is. This is incredible.

• 1:00:03Speaker 06

What if she's on the run?

• 1:00:04Amy Poehler?

What if she's on the run?

• 1:00:06Speaker 06

  Like get her head start.

• 1:00:08Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, that's true.

• 1:00:10Speaker 06

I don't want her to tell me. And like, can you please stop? What place after she's up looking to Jenna?

• 1:00:16Amy Poehler?

  They're all on the phone.

• 1:00:16Speaker 06

I don't think she is in the hospital, but thanks a lot. Wait, you think, call Sharie. You think she got a tip off call that this was happening? Alright, yeah.

• 1:00:26Amy Poehler?

Okay, they're all on the phone in the Sprinter van. All with sunglasses on.

• 1:00:30Speaker 06

  I'm just gonna message her.

• 1:00:31Amy Poehler?

No one's taking their sunglasses off.

• 1:00:34Speaker 05

Amy, this is, that was one minute.

• 1:00:36Amy Poehler?

Okay, of an entire episode, almost?

• 1:00:40Speaker 05

  I can't recommend it enough.

• 1:00:41Amy Poehler?

I gotta tell you, when you explain it, it does sound fun. I mean, there is something about Real Housewives, which is like, if you didn't get on board, it's like, I don't even know where to start.

• 1:00:51Speaker 05

I can tell you what season to start with any city, because there are seasons to miss.

• 1:00:55Amy Poehler?

Okay, okay, that's good to know. I would, I wouldn't mind that, because I have heard, I mean, Los Culturistas, Bowen, they're obsessed.

• 1:01:01Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:01:01Amy Poehler?

And they talk a lot about Salt Lake.

• 1:01:03Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:01:03Amy Poehler?

And I do feel like now might be the time to start if there's a new season starting.

• 1:01:07Speaker 05

If you have 3,000 hours to kill.

• 1:01:15Amy Poehler?

  Now is the time.

• 1:01:15Speaker 05

  Now's the time.

• 1:01:18Speaker 05

You know, the holidays are coming. You're gonna be all smuggled in.

• 1:01:21Amy Poehler?

But I kind of get it. It's like with the world being like, so there's so much like that these stakes are relative. I mean, well, she did go to jail.

• 1:01:28Speaker 05

  She did.

• 1:01:30Amy Poehler?

She went to jail. And not one person took their sunglasses off the whole time.

• 1:01:34Speaker 05

  No, Amy, they can't.

• 1:01:39Amy Poehler?

  Amazing, amazing. Oh, my gosh.

• 1:01:41Speaker 05

  I love you, Wig.

• 1:01:43Amy Poehler?

I'm so grateful you came and did this. I hope you had a good time.

• 1:01:47Speaker 05

I had the best time. Is it over?

• 1:01:48Amy Poehler?

Is there anything I've, I asked you about hater? Is there anything else we need to ask?

• 1:01:53Speaker 05

And thank you to Bill for doing this. That was really sweet.

• 1:01:56Amy Poehler?

  Sweet, Bill.

• 1:01:57Speaker 05

  I know. Love that guy.

• 1:01:58Amy Poehler?

I know. And you guys are so good in Skeleton Twins, by the way. What a great, I mean, so many, you've done so many great things, like, but the, the, the way in which you naturally, like, it's just very brother sister stuff there.

• 1:02:12Speaker 05

  Totally.

• 1:02:13Amy Poehler?

  It's so natural there.

• 1:02:14Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:02:14Amy Poehler?

Do you believe in past lives before we go?

• 1:02:16Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:02:17Amy Poehler?

  You do?

• 1:02:17Speaker 05

  Oh, my God, yes.

• 1:02:18Amy Poehler?

And do you feel like there are people in your life that you've known before?

• 1:02:21Speaker 05

Oh, yeah. Oh, fully. I think especially people in your inner

• 1:02:25Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:25Speaker 05

  circle have been there before.

• 1:02:29Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 1:02:29Speaker 05

  For sure.

• 1:02:30Amy Poehler?

Yes, I do, too. You meet someone and there is something about you and Bill in that film that feels very familial.

• 1:02:37Speaker 05

  I love that. Maybe.

• 1:02:39Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, I wonder. I wonder.

• 1:02:41Speaker 05

I believe in all that stuff.

• 1:02:42Amy Poehler?

  You do?

• 1:02:42Speaker 05

  Oh, yes.

• 1:02:43Amy Poehler?

What's the most woo-hoo thing you believe in? Do you believe in, um, um?

• 1:02:47Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:02:50Speaker 05

  I mean, I probably do.

• 1:02:53Amy Poehler?

  Do you believe in ghosts?

• 1:02:55Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:02:56Amy Poehler?

  Have you seen a ghost?

• 1:02:58Speaker 05

No, I haven't seen one, but I've felt them.

• 1:03:01Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 1:03:02Speaker 05

There have been times when I've gone into, I can, when I go into a place, sometimes I can

• 1:03:07Amy Poehler?

  You can feel the energy?

• 1:03:08Speaker 05

Especially if like, maybe someone died there.

• 1:03:10Amy Poehler?

Do you believe in astral projection, like people visiting each other in dreams?

• 1:03:14Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:03:14Amy Poehler?

  You do?

• 1:03:15Speaker 05

Yes. My great aunt visited me in a dream after she died.

• 1:03:19Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 1:03:19Speaker 05

  Yes, totally.

• 1:03:21Amy Poehler?

What was that like? What was the?

• 1:03:22Speaker 05

I woke up and I sobbed. And I was like 14, but I knew she was there.

• 1:03:28Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 1:03:29Speaker 05

Yeah. Wow, I believe in all that stuff.

• 1:03:33Amy Poehler?

I know. What do we know?

• 1:03:34Speaker 05

  What do we know?

• 1:03:35Amy Poehler?

  I'm trying to be less-

• 1:03:35Speaker 05

So much of it is like, science-based?

• 1:03:38Amy Poehler?

Yeah. I'm trying to be more open, and it's actually a goal of mine, is like, to try to be like, less of a detective when it comes to that stuff, and just kind of, like, open it up into my li- I don't want any ghosts. I don't want to see any.

• 1:03:51Speaker 05

I don't want to have anything to do with-

• 1:03:54Amy Poehler?

I love ghosts, I respect them, I just don't want to see them.

• 1:03:57Speaker 05

No. I have had my house ghost busted, though.

• 1:04:03Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:04:04Amy Poehler?

  A professional ghostbuster?

• 1:04:06Speaker 05

  Online, yes.

• 1:04:07Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 1:04:09Speaker 05

  Online!

• 1:04:11Speaker 05

No, my friend had her house-

• 1:04:13Amy Poehler?

  Ghost busted.

• 1:04:14Speaker 05

Ghost busted. And she was telling the story, she's like, "I don't know, I call her, she lives in New Mexico." I was like, "That's crazy, what's her number?" Because she told me things that had happened after, post-bust. And I was like, "Oh, this is interesting."

• 1:04:30Amy Poehler?

And we've learned from Psychic Mike, that you will pack up if somebody tells you to pack up.

• 1:04:35Speaker 05

You will pack up, we'll get out of there. And I did it, and I swear to God, my house felt different.

• 1:04:43Amy Poehler?

  She did it online.

• 1:04:45Speaker 05

  I love her, though.

• 1:04:46Amy Poehler?

  That's great.

• 1:04:47Speaker 05

I love you, Wade, thanks for doing this.

• 1:04:48Amy Poehler?

Dunis, from The Lawrence Welk Show, and Gilly, and Penelope, and, um, uh, who else?

• 1:05:31Amy Poehler?

Um, God, so many. We Target lady and we talked about the lady who couldn't wait to, you know, ruin a surprise. And Judy Grimes. And, um, oh my God, and, and Sha- Sha- Sha- Shauna, the like sexy lady at the office. And, um, uh, the Hollywood dish lady who spits her water out. And Mindy Grayson, the woman who can't get password. I mean, this is like, I could, I can't stop and, and won't stop. Um, but anyway, just do yourself a favor and look those all up. I mean, honestly, if you're looking for something to make you laugh, any
