I carried sadness and anger because I thought I could handle it alone, but I couldn't. Now I want to make sure others know that that support is out there. • 1:10Speaker 03

I needed more from my antidepressant, so my doctor added Caplyta lumateperone, proven to provide greater relief from depression symptoms than an antidepressant alone, building on my progress without starting over. Caplyta is for adults with major depressive disorder when used with an antidepressant and is available by prescription only. Individual results may vary. In clinical trials, weight gain was not common.

Elderly dementia patients have increased risk of death or stroke. Caplyta is not approved for dementia-related psychosis. Call your doctor about new or sudden mood changes, behaviors, or suicidal thoughts right away. Antidepressants may increase these risks. Report fever, confusion, stiff muscles, which may be life-threatening, or uncontrolled muscle movements, which may be permanent. High cholesterol and weight gain may occur, as can high blood sugar, which may be fatal. Monitoring is recommended. Common side effects are sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, feeling tired, and diarrhea. These aren't all the side effects.

Hello, everyone. Welcome to another episode of Good Hang. We are very excited about our guest today. It is Selena Gomez. The multi-talented, incredible businesswoman and comedian and singer, who is just a total delight. And we're gonna talk about a lot of fun things today. We're gonna talk about her incredible business and her success as the founder of Rare Beauty. We're gonna talk about Only Murders in the Building and working with legends and being one herself. We're gonna talk about Tejano music, her favorite kind, and music that she listened to growing up. And we're gonna get to know her grandmother's favorite recipe. All of that and more in this episode.

• 2:45Amy Poehler?

But, you know, we always have guests tell us about our guests. We always talk well behind our guests' back and have someone special to talk about them. And today, we have, well, one of my comedy legends, a person who came on an early episode of this show and who a lot of people don't know has totaled my car three times. Martin Short. Marty?

• 3:20Speaker 04

  Hi, baby.

• 3:22Amy Poehler?

Thank you for coming back. I was just thinking-

• 3:24Speaker 04

Hey, by the way, I loved our show.

• 3:26Amy Poehler?

Me, too. It was such a hit.

• 3:28Speaker 04

It was so... Nothing was funnier than when you called me a motherfucker.

• 3:35Amy Poehler?

  Where are you?

• 3:36Speaker 04

  I'm in Toronto.

• 3:37Amy Poehler?

Oh, fantastic. You know, I think I told you, I went to Canada a lot in the summers and it was always cold, but is it, is it warm there right now?

• 3:45Speaker 04

Do you know, it got insanely hot because we're spiraling toward the sun, as you-

• 3:49Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 3:50Speaker 04

And it got very hot and very humid. No, it late got to be 81. I know you don't believe it.

• 3:58Amy Poehler?

  That's good.

• 3:59Speaker 04

And I know you'd still call that a cold plunge, but not for Canadians.

• 4:04Amy Poehler?

Have you cold plunged since we talked?

• 4:06Speaker 04

  No, ma'am.

• 4:06Amy Poehler?

  Oh, well, I can tell.

• 4:10Speaker 04

You can tell by the skin?

• 4:11Amy Poehler?

I can, I can tell by your disposition. Very fiery.

• 4:14Speaker 04

You know what? By the way, fuck off, okay?

• 4:19Amy Poehler?

We're gonna talk to Selena today, who I don't think I've ever really met. And

• 4:23Speaker 04

  Really, she's absolutely lovely.

• 4:25Amy Poehler?

I know, and I, I wanna tell her, you know, this part of the show is like talking well behind somebody's back.

• 4:31Speaker 04

  Who are you talking to?

• 4:33Amy Poehler?

  You.

• 4:34Speaker 04

  Like, you're talking to?

• 4:35Amy Poehler?

  I'm talking-

• 4:35Speaker 04

  Oh, just me?

• 4:36Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you're the person I'm talking to. Do you think this was just me calling you?

• 4:41Speaker 04

You could let me know when we're recording, because if we're recording, I'll answer.

• 4:44Amy Poehler?

  We're recording right now.

• 4:46Speaker 04

  What? Okay.

• 4:50Amy Poehler?

I'm glad I'm talking to you about Selena, because I remember when we were together, I said, "Oh, what's it like working with her?" And you were like, "She's great." Like, you said, "She's just a doll." And I remember thinking, "Oh, it's so good to hear," because that's the vibe I got from her and wanted it so much to be true. But I do feel like you can tell a lot about somebody by how they work.

• 5:14Speaker 04

Yeah, I mean, the thing is about Selena is that she is just an old pro. I had never met her the first day we shot, and we had zoomed, and it was because of COVID, you know? You, you, you just have to zoom all the time. And as I'm driving there, I'm thinking, "What is Selena Gomez gonna be like? What if she's a nightmare? What if she's mean to people?

• 5:40Speaker 04

Kinda rude? Like, I knew if she was late, forty minutes late every day, Steve would say, "Very good one season. I don't care how big a success, I'm not doing it."

• 5:51Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 5:52Speaker 04

And so, right away, I met her in the makeup room, and she smiled at me, and I went, "Ah, ah, we're fine."

• 5:59Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 5:59Speaker 04

And she's just a doll. We've really, really, uh, become very, very close. I just, um, adore her. I'm so happy that she's getting married to this fabulous guy, Benny Blanco, who's just one of the great, cool guys, and funny, and loose. And she adores him. And, um, I don't know, I'm just thrilled for her happiness, and I'm thrilled to get to work with her.

• 6:27Amy Poehler?

Yeah, well, you know, I bet, I, I know that she gets asked a lot what it's like, like what she's learned from working with you and Steve. But what have you learned from working with her?

• 6:37Speaker 04

  I knew everything.

• 6:38Amy Poehler?

Yeah, it looks like nothing. Looks like you've stopped learning.

• 6:41Speaker 04

I learned you can like order an egg with caviar on it and not be ashamed.

• 6:48Amy Poehler?

  That's funny.

• 6:52Amy Poehler?

Caviar egg. You never gave yourself permission to do that before.

• 6:55Speaker 04

Didn't. I didn't. And I don't know what I was waiting for. First of all, I don't like caviar. But secondly, it was, I'm me. And you know, that's a new book.

• 7:05Amy Poehler?

I'm me, Conan. I deserve this.

• 7:08Speaker 04

The actual working title is I Is Me. I did a special once called I, Martin Short, Goes Hollywood.

• 7:17Speaker 04

A little bit of bad grammar is the funniest thing in the world. Nothing funny.

• 7:22Amy Poehler?

So funny. Now, do you have to have extra security because you work with Selena? Like on set and stuff? Because you guys shoot in New York a lot, which is not one.

• 7:32Speaker 04

Yeah, she has a security person. We have a security person. But what's amazing is if we shoot on the street, which is not often, but certainly happens a lot. That doesn't make any sense. Not often, but happens a lot. Anyway, you know, Steve and I are working and doing a scene. There might be nine guys there, kind of disinterested for about 40 minutes, and then they walk away. And you never, ever see those pictures. When Selena joins us, there's about 120 paparazzi, and they're there all day. And I'm sure they're just waiting for her to fall or stumble or mean, you know, that would therefore, they could, you know, make more money from it.

• 8:17Speaker 04

So she's just been, that's been her life. I don't, and she does have security on the streets. We all do. But, but she is so lovely with them, and they've been in her life for so long. The only time I ever saw her get a little stern is when they were a little abrupt to, like this 14-year-old fan of hers, and she never do that.

• 8:41Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 8:43Speaker 04

No, she, you can't fault her. You really. Okay, I'll tell you what, I'll tell you what's really bad about it. You can't, there's no way to.

• 8:52Amy Poehler?

And the other thing I do want to talk to her about today is, I mean, she's the founder of a hugely successful business. And, you know, just because we've all grown up with her, I think people think she's younger than she is. I mean, she's a 33-year-old woman running a billion-dollar business.

• 9:11Speaker 04

We once compared each other's net worth. And I told her what my net worth was, and she went, "Oh, that's so cute." It's just adorable.

• 9:22Amy Poehler?

You guys both wrote it on a piece of paper and just slipped it to each other?

• 9:27Speaker 04

I went like this. Wow. And she went like this. You know what? It's amazing. I've never seen her, I mean, she has literally like, I don't know, 490 million Instagram followers. I've never seen her overrun by it all, collapsing from the pressure of it all. And so, a question for her might be, is it ever overwhelming and too much? I also think, another thing to ask her about are her music. You know, she's this massively successful singer-songwriter.

• 10:07Speaker 04

And, but I don't think I ever asked her in detail enough for real early influences and what was the first song that she fell in love with.

• 10:19Amy Poehler?

I love that. On set, is there singing?

• 10:22Speaker 04

When Jane Lynch was on, there's always singing.

• 10:24Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 10:27Speaker 04

Steve, sometimes he'll bring his banjo. You know what I say about the banjo? The banjo makes people who play the jug say, "Really?" But anyway. But no, there's not a lot of singing. There's a lot of gossip. It doesn't have to be true.

• 10:47Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, just make it up.

• 10:49Speaker 04

  You know what I heard?

• 10:52Amy Poehler?

Okay, I'm gonna ask her about her early musical influences. That's a good question, I think. And I'm gonna, and I do wanna talk to her about her successful business because I do think that, you know, not to get too heavy, Marty, but in our patriarchal society, I think we like totally, you know, we don't treat female-run businesses, especially by young women, especially in the beauty space, as a serious business, and it is crushing everything else.

• 11:17Speaker 04

Let me tell you something. When I look at not only what Selena's done, but what you've done and what Tina's done, I find myself very proud of you ladies.

• 11:31Amy Poehler?

Well, that seems weird and patronizing. Proud of us?

• 11:35Speaker 04

  I am proud because...

• 11:36Amy Poehler?

Why, you're my, are you my dad?

• 11:39Speaker 04

No, I just feel like, you know, because you could just be saying, "You want cream in that coffee?", but you're not.

• 11:46Amy Poehler?

  This doesn't feel good.

• 11:50Speaker 04

I'm trying to be as kind as a condescending guy can be.

• 12:00Amy Poehler?

I love you so much. Thank you.

• 12:02Speaker 04

I remember doing something, but I will repeat it one more time.

• 12:05Amy Poehler?

  Oh!

• 12:06Speaker 04

  It's from the SNL 50th.

• 12:15Amy Poehler?

Oh, God, I can't wait. My phone is standing by.

• 12:18Speaker 04

Actually, why don't you call me on my cell?

• 12:20Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, you have mine.

• 12:23Speaker 04

  It's what?

• 12:24Amy Poehler?

A call you? I don't like to talk on the phone. Can you, can you just text it to me?

• 12:29Speaker 04

No, no, no, it's too long.

• 12:31Amy Poehler?

  Oh, my God.

• 12:32Speaker 04

It's, what is wrong with the phone?

• 12:34Amy Poehler?

I don't like talking on the phone. A phone call feels...

• 12:38Speaker 04

First of all, we're not gonna, this isn't gonna be the length of Shoah. It was a brief little story.

• 12:44Amy Poehler?

To me, a phone conver, phone call is bad news. Like, why am I on the phone?

• 12:49Speaker 04

No, no, no, no. But is this, and I, again, oh, my God, I so don't mean this condescendingly negatively. But is your thing about the phone because you really don't like it or because you read Cher doesn't like the phone?

• 13:03Amy Poehler?

Well, you know that I try to not like anything that Cher doesn't like.

• 13:09Speaker 04

  I know.

• 13:09Amy Poehler?

  You know how I do.

• 13:11Speaker 04

  I know.

• 13:12Amy Poehler?

I, uh, I would, you know what? Just snap me. Just Snapchat me.

• 13:17Speaker 04

Okay, I'm not, you know what? This is too boring. I'm not giving you this information. I can't.

• 13:22Amy Poehler?

Shit, okay. I'm calling you, calling you right now. Calling you right now. Okay, hanging up. So I can get the, okay. Love you, Marty. Bye.

• 13:31Amy Poehler?

Selena Gomez is here. I kind of wanted to start today by saying, like, I feel like so many people will talk to you about the past. They want to talk to you about things that happened, but I want to stay in the present.

• 14:33Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 14:34Amy Poehler?

And talk about the future. I know. Because your present is pretty amazing right now.

• 14:42Speaker 05

  Thank you so much.

• 14:43Amy Poehler?

Congratulations on the past couple of years.

• 14:46Speaker 05

I appreciate it. Yeah, it's been wonderful. I didn't want people, I genuinely appreciate you saying that because it's, people are going to think I'm permanently anhedonic of just not enjoying anything in life.

• 14:58Amy Poehler?

  Wait, what's that word?

• 14:59Speaker 05

  Anhedonic, meaning unable to enjoy.

• 15:03Speaker 05

  Things.

• 15:04Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 15:05Speaker 05

And I really wanted, I really love this era.

• 15:09Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 15:09Speaker 05

You will. The past five years have been wonderful.

• 15:13Amy Poehler?

  Super creative for you.

• 15:14Speaker 05

Yeah, it's just been a gift that keeps giving from only murders to rare. All of it's just, I can't, I have to pinch myself sometimes.

• 15:23Amy Poehler?

We have a lot to talk about because you're running, you know, you founded, created, and you're running a billion dollar business, two billion dollar business. You have a huge hit show on the air. You have the love of your life. You've got, you've, like, the past couple of years have felt like they've been this big joyous explosion of things. And I always like to ask people, it's like, if this was, if your life is a book, what is the title of this chapter?

• 15:49Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 15:52Speaker 05

  Gosh, I wouldn't.

• 15:53Amy Poehler?

Can I pitch you some ideas?

• 15:54Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 15:56Amy Poehler?

I would say something like, um, really simple but poetic, like, um, the best part yet.

• 16:04Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 16:04Amy Poehler?

  Or, um.

• 16:07Speaker 05

The best is yet to come.

• 16:09Amy Poehler?

The best is yet to come. Or the, the best is here, the best is here, babe.

• 16:14Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 16:15Amy Poehler?

  Or, what is the best?

• 16:20Amy Poehler?

  Let me tell you.

• 16:21Speaker 05

Thirty-three and feeling free, or whatever.

• 16:23Amy Poehler?

But I want to speak to you as a person talking to a deeply successful entrepreneur. I mean, you are the founder of a gigantic, successful business that, in my opinion, like, does a lot of things, gets a lot of things very right. When you were a young person, what was your relationship to makeup and beauty? Did you have a house where people were doing that? Did you?

• 16:49Speaker 05

Yeah, it's actually interesting because my, my Nana was all about self-care as, as far as, you know, taking good care of your skin. Um, but my mom was a makeup artist.

• 17:04Amy Poehler?

  No way.

• 17:05Speaker 05

So, yes. And she worked at MAC, so she had like.

• 17:08Amy Poehler?

  She was at the counter.

• 17:10Speaker 05

And I love it, you know, like I think she she would give me all of her products that she was done with. And she would do them for her photo shoots in Dallas, Texas for like little things. And it was really cool. So, um, yeah, I remember playing with it a lot. I wasn't allowed to wear it out and I'm glad considering the pictures I see now. I just would, I would stick on all the colors and it just was really fun for me to play with. And now my sister is gonna be 13.

• 17:41Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 17:42Speaker 05

It's so weird, but she's awesome.

• 17:44Amy Poehler?

12 to 13 is an interesting bridge.

• 17:46Speaker 05

Very. It's so weird. Even her getting her nails done sometimes freaks me out.

• 17:51Amy Poehler?

Yeah. And also I noticed that like 12, you're still kind of, you'll like dance around and be goofy. And sometimes something happens with with boys and girls. It's not gendered where like you just start to be conscious of being self-conscious and you just, I know.

• 18:10Speaker 05

Well, that's what I was going to say is my 12 versus her 12. It's, it is a vast difference and it makes me worried and also encouraged because I have, you know, trust in my sister and she's a very sweet girl. She's very goofy still, so I try to like pull that out of her.

• 18:32Amy Poehler?

Yeah. It's like you want to keep the goofiness going for as long as possible. And also that just is at any age, basically. Like no matter the person, like you wanna, it's a secret to life, but it's so hard to learn, which is if you can just have fun without worrying about what other people think of you.

• 18:49Speaker 05

  Exactly.

• 18:50Amy Poehler?

That's the power, but it takes so long to learn.

• 18:53Speaker 05

It's true. But she's been like, you know, when you were Joy, um, it was actually, I really wanted to ask you about that movie because I watched it with my sister and I completely sobbed.

• 19:06Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 19:06Speaker 05

Because it is so factual, how I almost feel like it should have been a requirement in school to watch that as a homework assignment because. I'm so fascinated with the human mind and it would break my heart and my sister watched it and she started crying and it's, um, was that just crazy?

• 19:28Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you know, I think what if for people listening, it's, I think you're referring, no, to Inside Out.

• 19:32Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 19:33Amy Poehler?

And in the second one, are you talking about Inside Out too?

• 19:35Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 19:36Amy Poehler?

Yeah, there's that like kind of heartbreak that happens when anxiety moves in.

• 19:40Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 19:41Amy Poehler?

And suddenly the emotion of anxiety moves in and I have to say, same, no matter the age.

• 19:47Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 19:48Amy Poehler?

You're either feeling it in real time as a young person, you're remembering that feeling as a person in your 30s and 40s or 50s or above, like you're just remembering that moment when your paint set, you know, got some darker colors in it.

• 20:03Speaker 05

  Definitely.

• 20:04Amy Poehler?

And it's, I mean, it's part of growing up.

• 20:07Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 20:08Amy Poehler?

  But it's, it's brutal.

• 20:10Speaker 05

It is. I just, but you, you, I mean, how is everyone a part of that movie?

• 20:15Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 20:16Speaker 05

If you haven't seen it, please watch.

• 20:17Amy Poehler?

  They're geniuses.

• 20:18Speaker 05

I just think it's incredible and congratulations.

• 20:20Amy Poehler?

  Thanks, Selena.

• 20:21Speaker 05

I'm gonna make my children watch it.

• 20:23Amy Poehler?

  Oh, my God, your children!

• 20:25Speaker 05

  I know.

• 20:26Amy Poehler?

I wanna be, I wanna see our little babies!

• 20:27Speaker 05

  I am.

• 20:28Amy Poehler?

  I know, I know, I know they don't exist yet, but I can't wait.

• 20:30Speaker 05

  I know.

• 20:31Amy Poehler?

Um, I also wanna talk to you about like typical day.

• 20:35Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 20:36Amy Poehler?

Of you running your business because you have basically three to four full-time jobs.

• 20:41Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 20:42Amy Poehler?

And one would be enough and you have a lot of full-time jobs and you know, um, the great Martin Short, I spoke to him earlier today because we like to talk well behind our guests' back and, and he's, you know, he's such, so in love with you and we, he was just saying like, I never see Selena like overwhelmed, like she doesn't do that thing, which is like, oh, I can't handle today, right? Even though she's got a million things that she's dealing with at once.

• 21:08Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 21:09Amy Poehler?

What's a typical day like for you?

• 21:10Speaker 05

Well, I love him so much. That isn't always true though.

• 21:14Amy Poehler?

  You're just hiding it.

• 21:16Speaker 05

I think it's, I, well, you know, it's about, of course, typical answer balance, but it is when I, when I am doing only murders, it's. You know, it can be 12 to 14 hour days and it's five days a week and I have like my entire love and attention is focused on that. So when I do get to work on anything film or TV related, I kinda have to have all of my focus there.

• 21:40Amy Poehler?

  Yep.

• 21:41Speaker 05

Does not mean that I'm not answering emails, well texts. I don't like email.

• 21:46Amy Poehler?

Oh, my God, Martin, Marty wanted to talk on the phone. I was like, are you nuts?

• 21:51Speaker 05

I they've made, I've turned into Steve and Marty. We'll get there, but I've turned into both of them somehow.

• 21:58Amy Poehler?

And you're talking on the sending faxes?

• 21:59Speaker 05

  Yes, and I don't.

• 22:03Amy Poehler?

  Using a file of fax?

• 22:04Speaker 05

Yeah, I just, I'm always, if I have an idea or I smell something or I feel something, I'm super close with Joyce, who basically is my product go to guru. If I want to create something out of thin air, she a thousand percent will go there. And it could be a complete failure.

• 22:25Amy Poehler?

So you can be like, I, I touched this lemon today. How cool would it be to like have a lemon, you know, do we have a lemon scrub in the line that's interesting or whatever?

• 22:34Speaker 05

Yeah, I definitely will come up with things.

• 22:37Amy Poehler?

What have you come up with that you're like, that was good?

• 22:40Speaker 05

Well, when we first started the company, I'd say the blushes were the liquid blushes have been my pride and joy because that was, that was one of the most important, you know, moments for Rare. And I think the, the texture and the way we'd play with it and all the colors, all of it feels like you're a chemist in a way and you can just feel it and smell it even. And I, I was able to go to Italy where, you know, we did our, most of our products and it's, it's wild, you know? It's just, it's a whole process.

• 23:21Amy Poehler?

You have tons of different people using the stuff that you make. I was really impressed, and I didn't know this, that you have.

• 23:30Amy Poehler?

Easily accessible products, they're easy to open.

• 23:34Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 23:36Amy Poehler?

Why was that important to you? And what do you have to do to make that happen?

• 23:40Speaker 05

So I have a few medical things, but I have arthritis in my fingers. And that's due to my lupus. So I remember before the brand, I was trying to open a water bottle and it hurt really bad before I was on the right medication. And we somehow inherently made the products easy to open. And then we realized, wait, they kind of have to be that way. And then we started to make every product with the intention of anybody who have dexterity problems.

• 24:23Speaker 05

And I know that might seem like a little thing, but it's really not because it's actually so helpful for anyone at any age to be able to use the products. And that's why we want to make them easy and accessible because it's important to me and it always has been. So even down to our fragrance, the pump is very easy for me to use.

• 24:46Amy Poehler?

It speaks to the bigger thing, which is I've just been very, always very moved and impressed by the way that you allow your own challenges, health challenges, to inform your story and your product. Because it really makes people feel very seen.

• 25:01Speaker 05

Definitely. And I think there's, you know, there's so much stigma behind so many different illnesses. I don't know, I've been through it, so I think I just know how it feels. And I really want everyone to feel as good as I do now, you know?

• 25:18Amy Poehler?

Do we have the scent here?

• 25:20Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah.

• 25:20Amy Poehler?

  May I?

• 25:21Speaker 05

  Yes, please.

• 25:22Amy Poehler?

Look, so this is my fake food wall.

• 25:24Speaker 05

I really, really love this. We have some of this at our home.

• 25:27Amy Poehler?

  You do?

• 25:28Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 25:28Amy Poehler?

What kind of stuff do you hear? Do you recognize? Okay, already I'm loving this for a couple of reasons.

• 25:32Speaker 05

Well, okay, basically, we have orange peels that look so real and they're all over the house that people keep mistaking them as trash.

• 25:42Amy Poehler?

  And they're fake orange peels?

• 25:45Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 25:45Amy Poehler?

  It's art.

• 25:46Speaker 05

  It's art.

• 25:49Amy Poehler?

  I love it.

• 25:49Speaker 05

  Might be my fiance's choice.

• 25:54Amy Poehler?

Benny's like, babe, we gotta get these orange peels.

• 25:56Speaker 05

  It's like they're the deal.

• 25:57Amy Poehler?

And you're like, okay, I'm afraid people are gonna throw them away.

• 26:01Speaker 05

Yeah, multiple people have tried. But yeah, so can I show you?

• 26:05Amy Poehler?

  Yes, please.

• 26:06Speaker 05

Basically, it's so to lock it, it's just that little simple turn to unlock it.

• 26:12Amy Poehler?

And what are we calling this fragrance?

• 26:14Speaker 05

This is called Rare Aude Parfum. I learned that. But I just say it's my rare perfume. So you can do it with, you know, your hands. You can do it however you feel like if you want to. Oh, I was gonna spray it right in my eyes.

• 26:28Amy Poehler?

I can smell it right now.

• 26:29Speaker 05

So I know, I just realized I overdid it.

• 26:31Amy Poehler?

No, no, let me smell, let me take it in.

• 26:32Speaker 05

  It will definitely.

• 26:34Amy Poehler?

  Oh yeah, it smells nice.

• 26:35Speaker 05

It'll settle. I honestly can taste it. I'm sorry how many times I sprayed it.

• 26:40Speaker 05

I'm like, it's in my mouth.

• 26:42Amy Poehler?

It smells. It's, you know, the very funny bit, which is like, you know, in the eighties, you would like spray your cologne and then you'd walk through it.

• 26:49Speaker 05

  Oh, it's the gentle.

• 26:51Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 26:51Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 26:52Amy Poehler?

  You'd make it a thing.

• 26:53Speaker 05

I think that's what I should have done.

• 26:55Amy Poehler?

Okay, this smells really good. Everybody here is like.

• 26:58Speaker 05

We're waiting for it to calm down.

• 27:00Amy Poehler?

Everybody likes the smell in here.

• 27:02Speaker 05

It'll be here for a minute.

• 27:04Amy Poehler?

And then we light it on fire. So we really do some pyrotechnics in here.

• 27:11Amy Poehler?

So I got to talk to Marty Short.

• 29:37Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 29:38Amy Poehler?

And he was so nice. You know, he came on this podcast.

• 29:43Speaker 05

  He was your first guest.

• 29:43Amy Poehler?

He was like my first guest, him and Tina. And him and Steve, you know, are heroes of mine and I'm sure of yours, too. And I grew up loving them, but I also have the pleasure and privilege to know that they're really wonderful to work with. And when you guys all started working together, and of course, the show is a big, giant hit, and I said, you know, what's it like working with Selena? Like, she seems great, but you know, you never know. And every report back has been, and always has been, like, you're such a pro.

• 30:19Speaker 05

My papa used to say, if you are on time, you're already late.

• 30:25Speaker 05

So that means I get to places 30 minutes before, or I've had, my team has had to trick me because I show up so early, but I like to be prepared and to say hi and not be rushed. The, the feeling of being rushed is very stressful. But then on top of it, I start working with Steve and Marty. And they really, you know, spearhead the whole, you know, they started the pyramid and everything happens. And they just, they are so professional. They make everyone feel good. They lighten up any room, even if it's a serious scene. And that's, that's a huge inspiration to me.

• 31:08Speaker 05

And it, it just, they've been working for so long. And if I'm tired and they're not sometimes, I'm like, whoa, okay, I can do this, you know? They, they've really, um, I've been very lucky to work with people who are, you know, punctual. And I, I just like it because I want everyone to work and have an enjoyable experience.

• 31:29Amy Poehler?

I don't think people realize in our industry, like most jobs, you get in trouble if you're late or you get fired. But in our, in our industry, in the music industry, in the, in acting and in television and film, people sometimes just don't come on time. And it's a really weird thing because in almost every other industry, you can't, you can't get away with that.

• 31:56Speaker 05

  Yeah, I wonder why?

• 31:57Amy Poehler?

I don't, I, I have theories. I think sometimes genuinely, like real, like the magnanimous theory is that real artists like are often, you know, in their own kind of creative space and like time isn't, maybe their time management maybe isn't their biggest skill.

• 32:16Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 32:17Amy Poehler?

That's a, that's a generous way to think about it. And then the less generous way is I think to your point about anxiety, for some people.

• 32:28Amy Poehler?

There's just like a struggle to figure out the power dynamics and one way to get power is to make people wait. It's my worst nightmare.

• 32:37Speaker 05

That's yeah. I honestly would start crying only because it stresses me out.

• 32:44Amy Poehler?

  It's so stressful.

• 32:45Speaker 05

It's also, I don't want to hurt, I guess it wouldn't be hurting people's feelings because they don't probably care like about me that way. But I think it's disrespectful. Um, no, it's not to say everyone live their life the way they want to, but for me, it just, I would feel like a puppy dog with my tail in between my legs the whole day at work. If I made the crew wait even 30 minutes, I'd be like, I'm so sorry.

• 33:10Amy Poehler?

I know. Like there's, I mean, we all make mistakes for humans, but there are the few times that I've overslept or I, I, I cannot tolerate the feeling of, of knowing people are waiting.

• 33:23Speaker 05

That's so nice to know that there's more people like that.

• 33:26Amy Poehler?

Are you an early to airport person?

• 33:27Speaker 05

  No.

• 33:29Amy Poehler?

  Oh, what?

• 33:30Speaker 05

  I don't, I don't push it, but I do, I don't like being.

• 33:34Amy Poehler?

  This is interesting.

• 33:35Speaker 05

In, um, an airport because it, it like is, as you can tell, I'm a very like anxious person in a way, but I, I don't know. It gets me.

• 33:49Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 33:49Speaker 05

  Like overstimulated. Thank you.

• 33:51Amy Poehler?

You want to, you want to kind of like keep walking right onto the plane.

• 33:55Speaker 05

And then get in my little.

• 33:56Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 33:57Speaker 05

  Like it.

• 33:58Amy Poehler?

  I'm the opposite.

• 33:59Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 34:00Amy Poehler?

I like to get there with plenty of time.

• 34:02Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 34:02Amy Poehler?

  Go look at the gate.

• 34:05Speaker 05

  Go look at the gate.

• 34:06Amy Poehler?

You have to see, yeah, I have to see the gate.

• 34:08Speaker 05

That's true. Make sure it's there.

• 34:09Amy Poehler?

Make sure it's there. Look at the plane. Look at the gate. Like very like airport dad.

• 34:14Speaker 05

  Love that.

• 34:14Amy Poehler?

Go up to the person and be like, looks like we're taking up on time. Like I like to, I like to kick the tires a little bit.

• 34:20Speaker 05

  I love that.

• 34:21Amy Poehler?

And have plenty of time to just like be a little hyperventilant, but I understand. You, the, the airport is a nightmare.

• 34:27Speaker 05

It's just stimu-, it's overstimulating, but I will say, if I'm at the Dallas airport. I like to take my time.

• 34:34Amy Poehler?

Ooh, why? What's at the Dallas airport?

• 34:36Speaker 05

First off, it's my home. Second, it's just, I mean, what a burger. They have the best restaurants. It doesn't even feel like you're at an airport.

• 34:45Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you could get lost there.

• 34:46Speaker 05

I just want to spend time there. It's, it's, yeah, it's a very push and pull thing because it could be overstimulating.

• 34:53Amy Poehler?

Sometimes I like to try to get my steps in.

• 34:56Speaker 05

  Oh, that's clever.

• 34:58Amy Poehler?

I'm not always thinking too much about my steps, but if I can get them in.

• 35:02Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 35:04Amy Poehler?

The airport is a great place to get them in.

• 35:05Speaker 05

Now, have you seen the people who ride their suitcases? You can do that. There's automatic.

• 35:14Amy Poehler?

  Adults?

• 35:15Speaker 05

Oh, I've seen adults. I've actually seen it. I do believe you can find it on TikTok or something.

• 35:21Amy Poehler?

  Riding the suitcases.

• 35:22Speaker 05

  It is grown, yes.

• 35:25Amy Poehler?

I get it for the kids, but it's a little hilarious. And I don't mean to be unfair, but if a man was riding his suitcase, that's a hell no.

• 35:33Speaker 05

And you're kind. Yeah, that's so true.

• 35:36Amy Poehler?

Or anyone who brings their own pillow.

• 35:41Amy Poehler?

It's very stressful to me. Adults with their own pillow. Again, if you need your pillow for support, I understand. But if you don't.

• 35:48Speaker 05

Why are you gonna have it?

• 35:49Amy Poehler?

Okay, so back to Marty. So Marty, first of all, what I find so interesting, I mean, you are, you have been, you, this is a really deeply comedic role on a show with deeply comedic people, and it keeps getting recognized in, you know, by your peers and lauded by critics. And, you know, people can't wait for season five, which is coming out this week. But you have been funny for a very long time.

• 36:19Speaker 05

Oh, God, thank you. That's a huge compliment.

• 36:21Amy Poehler?

And you were very funny on Wizards.

• 36:23Speaker 05

  Thank you.

• 36:24Amy Poehler?

  And.

• 36:25Speaker 05

I'm like, what? How have you seen it?

• 36:28Amy Poehler?

But you've had the chops for a long time. You've had your, like, your timing, which is so much, so much, you know, is such a big.

• 36:39Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 36:39Amy Poehler?

It's, wow, I can't even get this sentence out. This is how bad my timing is. But it's true. Your timing has always been impeccable.

• 36:46Speaker 05

I, I don't, I am. It's because I grew up and should have probably been more outside, but I grew up watching Will and Grace, Friends, of course, you know, Channel 33 would be Frasier after.

• 37:05Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 37:06Amy Poehler?

Yeah, who did you, who did you love, who were your comedic heroes growing up?

• 37:10Speaker 05

Oh, well, I mean, that's different because I feel like when I have watched, because I didn't watch like, stand up. It was actually introduced to me when I was probably like 18, just because I was this Texas bumpkin that just didn't really know. And I think the first one I ever watched was, I believe it was, see, I'm terrible. Oh, Ali Wong, when she was pregnant.

• 37:38Amy Poehler?

No way, that was your first stand up special?

• 37:40Speaker 05

Yeah. And I just completely lost it. So now it's almost like a morning thing where I'll like, you know, Benny will show me some of his favorite comedians. And it's actually, I have a whole appreciation and, you know, obviously for Steve and Marty knowing their history and their stories, it's pretty, it's pretty inspiring. I don't know how, other than just I watched a lot of TV and I thought about the timing. But I will say Wizards was so fun because I had the, I had the room to mess up and it's okay if it really failed and was cheesy because it was Disney, so it was fun.

• 38:21Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 38:22Speaker 05

Now, this was a bit scarier.

• 38:24Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I would be intimidated to do a TV show with them, I have to say. They're really deeply funny and they're really good joke writers.

• 38:31Speaker 05

  They're very good.

• 38:33Amy Poehler?

And their material, like they're always searching for like the better joke and they're really, they won't kind of rest until they get it.

• 38:40Speaker 05

It's true. Trust me, I will be right in the middle of them figuring it out and I'm like, it's funny, guys, it's funny.

• 38:46Amy Poehler?

Guys, we got it. I know, I mean, still, you know, when I work with them or people that are kind of like trained in that world, it's still amazing to me how you'll think everything is really ready to go and. People, you know, the best comedians will just keep going, but do you think

• 39:04Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 39:04Amy Poehler?

Up until the very last minute?

• 39:06Speaker 05

That is something that I love, though, because it's so fun, but I must have heard their bits a hundred times, but I could finish them. But so I just try to, at a group hang, I'm just listening and I'm laughing again and doing the whole thing to just be like, wow! And it's the 20th time I've heard them. But it's actually so sweet.

• 39:31Amy Poehler?

  So sweet.

• 39:31Speaker 05

Because they, they've been best friends for like 35 or something years.

• 39:37Amy Poehler?

Their, their relationship is really awesome to watch.

• 39:39Speaker 05

It's so cute. I love it.

• 39:40Amy Poehler?

And, you know, having truly, I looked up to both of them when I was growing up. They, I can't believe that I know them. Like, I actually can't believe that they're friends of mine.

• 39:49Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 39:50Amy Poehler?

Who is someone that you can't believe you're friends with?

• 39:53Speaker 05

  Uh, honestly, them and Meryl.

• 39:57Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 39:58Speaker 05

I, I can't even imagine, like, my life is really weird sometimes because I, we have gotten incredibly lucky with people who love to just come and join our show. We, we don't, you know, we want to create a space where people can have fun. So that's genuinely, I believe and hope that is the reason people like to come on the show, because we just have fun and you can be a quirky character or be whatever you want.

• 40:26Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 40:27Speaker 05

So I feel like I lost track of what I was.

• 40:30Amy Poehler?

Well, I was saying, who can you believe you're friends with?

• 40:32Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 40:32Amy Poehler?

  And Meryl, I mean, ultimate.

• 40:34Speaker 05

But everyone. Dave Vine, I love. Michael Creighton, I love.

• 40:38Amy Poehler?

  Yeah. You've had such.

• 40:41Speaker 05

  Richard Kind. I'm sorry.

• 40:42Amy Poehler?

  Bing bong.

• 40:43Speaker 05

  He's one of my favorite.

• 40:44Amy Poehler?

  Bing bong.

• 40:45Speaker 05

I know. I'm too obsessed with your movie, but.

• 40:49Amy Poehler?

Which, every time I see Richard Kind and I've gotten a chance to see him recently, I have this reaction because of his voice, because we never recorded together, but in, in Inside Out, he played Bing Bong, an amazing character. And Richard is such a like. Big personality.

• 41:06Speaker 05

  He's so great.

• 41:08Amy Poehler?

He's so great. And it's, but it's very, it's filled with a ton of pathos. Like you really feel big feelings when you're around Richard.

• 41:14Speaker 05

Richard just makes me laugh. He doesn't even try. He's just, one time he had to walk down a hall and open a door and he just like walked all the way down and we watched him walk past the door that he was supposed to open to go to the next door and knock. And then the other person answered from the other door and looked down the hall and he goes, "Oh, well, I didn't know that." And I was like, "Yes, you did. We shot it like 15 times."

• 41:39Amy Poehler?

And then do you guys improvise? Like, do you do like, do you do takes?

• 41:43Speaker 05

We do have freedom takes is what we call them.

• 41:45Amy Poehler?

Freedom takes. We call them on Parks and Recreation, we call them fun runs.

• 41:49Speaker 05

Oh, that's awesome. I like, that sounds more fun.

• 41:52Amy Poehler?

  Freedom takes.

• 41:53Speaker 05

Yeah, freedom takes. That's exactly what Marty will say. He'll be like, "Okay, okay, but let's do a freedom take." And then, and then we can have fun and do whatever and try things. It's funny when it's so funny and then it's hilarious when it doesn't land.

• 42:06Amy Poehler?

Oh, I know. I'm always like, get ready for Titty longer.

• 42:09Speaker 05

And then no one laughs and you're like, ah.

• 42:12Amy Poehler?

You're like, "I have a good idea. I can't wait to bring it out on this freedom take." And then you do it and everyone's like, "Moving on."

• 42:17Speaker 05

Yeah. Oh, and it's happened. I equally get it too, because they, they are, they're very sweet to me, but they'll, they'll, they'll let me know when a joke fails. They're like, "Mmm, that didn't work." I was like, "Okay." I really appreciate it.

• 42:30Amy Poehler?

They're pros. They will not, they will not say it's funny if, if, if it's not.

• 42:34Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 42:35Amy Poehler?

And, okay, we should take a lip balm break, by the way.

• 42:38Speaker 05

  Sure.

• 42:38Amy Poehler?

I take a lip. Do you have your lip?

• 42:40Speaker 05

  Yeah, I do.

• 42:41Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 42:42Speaker 05

What kind of balm do you use?

• 42:46Amy Poehler?

  You don't know which ones?

• 42:47Speaker 05

Well, I mean, I'm sponsored by Lanesh.

• 42:50Amy Poehler?

  I see. Okay.

• 42:52Speaker 05

But I could be sponsored by Rare View. I'm not. You're hilarious. I want you to do what your contract says, but um.

• 42:59Amy Poehler?

My contract is if I have a beauty contract.

• 43:03Amy Poehler?

You know, Selena, my beauty contracts. What do you mean? It's hard to keep them straight.

• 43:10Speaker 05

So I haven't used these because I want you to try this one.

• 43:13Amy Poehler?

Okay. Oh, these are great. Okay, the reviews in, they're great.

• 43:18Speaker 05

If you just let them in.

• 43:21Amy Poehler?

Like it a lot. So let's get to Marty's question.

• 43:24Speaker 05

  Oh, good grief.

• 43:25Amy Poehler?

Marty had a question for you, and it was a sweet one, I think, because, you know, he was saying, you know, he was like, I don't think I talk to Selena enough about her music, you know? And she's such a sweet.

• 43:36Speaker 05

  That's so cute.

• 43:37Amy Poehler?

I know, it's such a cute thing to say. And I mean, also, let's point out that both Steve and Marty, on top of being, you know, comedic geniuses, are also excellent musicians.

• 43:48Speaker 05

  It's true.

• 43:49Amy Poehler?

But he, his question was very, you know, sweet, which was basically like, just like, hold on, let me get it right. Okay, so he said, like, who were some of your early musical influences? And what was the song that you fell in love with early?

• 44:04Speaker 05

  Ooh.

• 44:05Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 44:06Speaker 05

Well, it was interesting because my dad, growing up, was a DJ. So I definitely remember listening to a lot of 90s hip hop. But my mom was very creative. So when she would paint, she'd listen to classical music. When, you know, other things were happening, she'd kind of go with the energy. And then on my dad's side, it was a lot of Tejano music. So I loved listening to all styles of music.

• 44:36Amy Poehler?

What, what's, what is it about Tejano music that makes it specifically that kind of music? How would you describe it to people who don't listen to it?

• 44:42Speaker 05

I think, well, Linda Ronstadt has an incredible album that is in Spanish. And she, to me, since, you know, the days of Selena Quintanilla, who, who kind of popped, you know, made it like a pop version of it.

• 44:59Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 45:00Speaker 05

Linda's, I thought, was incredible, too, because it's so musically.

• 45:07Speaker 05

  Charged.

• 45:08Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 45:08Speaker 05

The instruments make everything sound so grand. And then you feel like you want to move. That's one of the best feelings. And it just, just hearing her, I don't know if you've heard any of that album, but

• 45:22Amy Poehler?

  I have.

• 45:23Speaker 05

  It's so beautiful.

• 45:24Amy Poehler?

She's definitely like a voice of my childhood as well. Like her, my mom used to play Linda Rossella. She's just an amazing singer. And you've, you've recorded in Spanish, too.

• 45:34Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 45:34Amy Poehler?

Did your voice change when you sang in a different language?

• 45:36Speaker 05

It does. It's so weird. I don't know why. I only have one EP in Spanish and a few songs I've recorded in Spanish for various things. And I, I don't know why.

• 45:48Amy Poehler?

Yeah. It's so interesting. I can imagine, because it's like, I don't know. It's, you're yourself, but you're playing a, you're just playing a different version of yourself, a character in a way. And it's, it's so interesting to be singing.

• 46:03Speaker 05

  A different language.

• 46:04Amy Poehler?

  Yeah. It's really difficult.

• 46:06Speaker 05

It's really funny to me. I don't really get it, but I like it.

• 46:10Amy Poehler?

Yeah. And you are now living with a musician.

• 46:13Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 46:13Amy Poehler?

  Two musicians.

• 46:14Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 46:15Amy Poehler?

What's it like in a house with two musicians? Orange peels everywhere.

• 46:18Speaker 05

Well, there's orange peels to go around.

• 46:20Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 46:21Speaker 05

And I'd say he's obviously, I, hands down, I hope everyone would agree with me, musically talented in a stratosphere that I couldn't even touch, you know? And I, and it's not because I'm playing down myself. I, I'm really not. I'm just, I'm just saying I respect him as an artist, as a producer, as a songwriter, and everything that he does, he puts his whole heart into. I will listen to the same beats over and over and over.

• 46:53Amy Poehler?

That's what I imagine, is that he's playing a lot of beats.

• 46:55Speaker 05

Yeah, he's creating things. I, I would like to categorize myself more as an actress. So there isn't any.

• 47:08Speaker 05

Competition, I guess, not that there would be. The last album I released was with Benny and it was amazing. Because I was proud of something and it was mine and ours and it was fun. But I think I think I really depend on him for, you know, any of the taste playlists, that kind of stuff.

• 47:29Amy Poehler?

  Congrats on your engagement.

• 47:31Speaker 05

  Thank you so much.

• 47:32Amy Poehler?

And I have to say, the other thing that I have loved watching you over the years, again, not knowing you, but just like being like, oh, cool. Selena's trying this, your cooking show? I love a cooking show.

• 47:43Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 47:43Amy Poehler?

And I love cooking and it was, for me, it was a new experience. I didn't really start cooking until I was in my 40s. I didn't really grow up. You know, I had a working mom, we didn't have, you know, we didn't, there wasn't a ton of, I didn't cook in the home when I was young. And I had my kids, I was working a lot, I didn't cook as much. And so I'm always drawn to people teaching me how to cook and watching people cook. You are too. What kind of?

• 48:14Speaker 05

So the whole, this is what I love when people say, you are a chef because you had a cooking show.

• 48:21Amy Poehler?

  No. Right, but you like.

• 48:22Speaker 05

The idea, yes, the idea and the concept of the show is that I simply don't know how. And I think over a few seasons, it's safe to say, I still don't know how. Because it was incredible recipes that were so intricate. And I think that was very challenging for me.

• 48:44Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 48:44Speaker 05

But it was fun because I'd get it right, but it would take me five to seven hours to do it.

• 48:51Amy Poehler?

But what I liked about it is.

• 48:53Speaker 05

  Crazy.

• 48:53Amy Poehler?

You know, you're, you're basically, to your point, you're watching somebody learn and you're learning with them. And it's a very nice gesture to be even behind the people watching.

• 49:04Speaker 05

Oh, yeah, that's actually what I do with Benny. Benny feels. I don't know if he'd like admit this, but he likes when I sit in the kitchen with him because he tells me what he's doing. And I think it's the cutest thing in the world because I'll sit there and I'm just like, now what? And he'll go, so we're gonna, we're gonna make sure these onions are fully chopped and I'm gonna car- caramelize them, whatever. See, I don't even know what lingo.

• 49:28Amy Poehler?

  Yep.

• 49:29Speaker 05

He's like, I'm gonna do this, chop the basil, and then he'd like, completely loses himself in cooking. And I love that. I just think it's so endearing.

• 49:39Amy Poehler?

Well, I think cooking is a good way, speaking of anxiety, for me, it's like a place to put anxiety.

• 49:44Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 49:46Amy Poehler?

Cause it's very low risk, high reward. If you don't, if it doesn't work out, like, whatever. You just order in or just tried, but if it does, you feel really good about yourself.

• 49:56Speaker 05

You're very proud, for sure. I, I, I enjoy cooking, I really do. I just find it very intimidating to do with Benny. Because he has, he has, he's so good, he's just really good at it.

• 50:11Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 50:12Speaker 05

It's almost just too threatening. So one time I made dinner for my friends and he got so offended. He was like, why haven't you done that for me?

• 50:21Amy Poehler?

  Dinner?

• 50:21Speaker 05

I'm like, cause mine was frozen and then I added a sauce. He does everything.

• 50:26Amy Poehler?

  You're like, I'm dealing with the sauce. I can't take, I can't, I can't talk to you right now.

• 50:30Speaker 05

  But I try.

• 50:31Amy Poehler?

What is your, what's a meal that you like, that you know to cook and you cook?

• 50:35Speaker 05

Oh, my Nana's Chicken and Dumplings. It's a very southern dish. It's very good. It's biscuits and these chicken strip, not, not just shredded chicken and a soup. It's the best cozy weather.

• 50:53Amy Poehler?

  That sounds good.

• 50:54Speaker 05

  It's so fun.

• 50:55Amy Poehler?

I love also, you know, to like zoom out what was great about that show is, you know, it's just you enjoying food.

• 51:04Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 51:05Amy Poehler?

  Because

• 51:06Speaker 05

  I love food.

• 51:06Amy Poehler?

You talk a lot about making sure that you stay healthy.

• 51:09Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 51:10Amy Poehler?

What is your, how has your relationship with food changed?

• 51:12Speaker 05

Uh, it, it hasn't necessarily changed, it's broadened.

• 51:17Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 51:18Speaker 05

  And...

• 51:20Speaker 05

Benny has spoiled me a little bit. Because he is, again, not to talk about it, but all the time. But he would, he would take a recipe and turn it into something even better. So it's, it's really funny. I'm just like totally airing him out right now. But I think he, he does this thing where he'll say, I'll say, wow, this risotto is incredible. And he'll taste it and he'll say, well, you know, I would, I probably would have added this, but it's very good. I just think if you put more and then like, you see how this is set? And I just like to like stare at him because it's so cute.

• 52:00Amy Poehler?

  He's constantly tweaking it.

• 52:02Speaker 05

Yeah, he always, he always says he can make it better. And it's not a lie. It's just the most adorable thing. He's gonna be like, what?

• 52:10Amy Poehler?

It's a very sweet, like making food for someone is a really tender act.

• 52:13Speaker 05

  It is.

• 52:14Amy Poehler?

  It's really loving act.

• 52:15Speaker 05

  Very kind act.

• 52:16Amy Poehler?

  It is.

• 52:18Speaker 05

He, I just get sometimes stressed because he doesn't need to do it. But he reminds me, like you said, it's very therapeutic for him.

• 52:25Amy Poehler?

At least I can speak for me where you just kind of start thinking about like, what, what do I want to make tonight? Okay. And your brain, you know, your high, your anxiety brain, your squirrel brain needs to land on something. And then it can land on a list and it can think about timing and it can think, and it like has to click clack away on something. And it's, if it's just the meal that night, it can be really helpful.

• 52:48Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 52:49Amy Poehler?

It's, and it's also done. There's something about finishing that thing that you were.

• 52:53Speaker 05

  It's a feeling of accomplishment.

• 52:55Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 52:55Speaker 05

And I, I totally get that. It's the same feeling as me watching like TikToks of people cooking. Those are my favorite.

• 53:04Amy Poehler?

  Me too.

• 53:05Speaker 05

I could just, I just appreciate it so much. And then they're so interesting from different cuisines around the world. And it's just really, yeah, that's, that's me. That would be my feed for sure.

• 53:18Amy Poehler?

Do you go on TikTok? Because that must be treacherous.

• 53:21Speaker 05

  No, so.

• 53:24Speaker 05

  Actually haven't been on TikTok.

• 53:26Amy Poehler?

  That's great.

• 53:27Speaker 05

  In.

• 53:27Amy Poehler?

  I'm sorry TikTok, but.

• 53:29Speaker 05

  No, it's okay.

• 53:29Amy Poehler?

  We need a break.

• 53:30Speaker 05

All social media platforms, I'm sure, hate me at this point because I'm always like, ah, I don't know. It's very, can be scary.

• 53:36Amy Poehler?

  400 million Instagram followers.

• 53:38Speaker 05

  So, that's, it's fine, but.

• 53:40Amy Poehler?

I mean, it's fine, says Serena.

• 53:42Speaker 05

Well, no, I'm just saying, I get so like awkward about that. Because it doesn't, I don't, I don't understand it sometimes. It's just a very interesting thing.

• 53:52Amy Poehler?

Um, because I, my experience with social media, I think, is that we may share a similarity, which is that I, I feel it's like treacherous, but it can be, to your point, like, you can find ways to feel connection.

• 54:07Speaker 05

Definitely. I think it's important for that element for me to have a connection with, you know, just my community. I'm not sure I'll always be that way forever, but I think right now it's, it's been a great resource for me to connect with people. I have not been on social media for a few months now. Even when I post, sometimes it's just to make sure it's like, like on my post and feed, and then I don't look at anything.

• 54:38Amy Poehler?

Well, you've been very generous in sharing your life with people.

• 54:41Speaker 05

Yeah, and I, and I like.

• 54:42Amy Poehler?

This is happening and, and I feel good about it.

• 54:44Speaker 05

Doing it my way, you know? And I think if I were to get into something, and I, oh, sorry, I'm all over the place. But, and I also just want people to know, like, if it didn't come from me, it's, it's 90% false or anything. I just love being able to say, this is where I am and I'm enjoying it. And I'm willing to share that part of my life and maybe it'll change, but I enjoy it.

• 55:10Amy Poehler?

Yeah. And then the, the, it leads me kind of to one of our last questions, which is basically. Energy, giving it, getting it. Like, it sounds like for every person in their 30s, I would say, it's one of the big lessons is figuring out, okay, if your 20s is like trying to figure out, you know, what you don't want to do and who you don't want to be, then your 30s become like, okay, let's, let's, let's give energy to the things that I want to have grow.

• 55:40Speaker 05

  Of course.

• 55:41Amy Poehler?

So how do you, how do you, what have you learned about, you know, self-care and boundaries and all this way in which you can be, you know, open about your life, or you can share the things that you're happy about, and you can feel the love and support from people who have supported you, but still keep.

• 55:59Speaker 05

I definitely don't read anything. I don't have comments enabled on my, on my, on my page. Just simply because I want it to be fun for me. I don't need anything else other than just me wanting to share that with, with the world. Oh, sorry. That's my ride, guys.

• 56:20Amy Poehler?

Wait, this is why Selena's such a pro, is that she just stopped talking during a siren. That is.

• 56:27Amy Poehler?

You're just like, you don't go looking for trouble.

• 56:30Speaker 05

I don't think it's, it's healthy. So I'll, I'll say on the social part, if you're depending on it, it's really scary. But have a healthy relationship with it. I think it's important. But yeah, I don't, I don't let anything in that I don't need because it's not where I am.

• 56:50Amy Poehler?

And you know, you kind of like spoke about karma earlier. What's amazing about the work that you do is you give a lot back. You, you give a lot of your time, and you give a lot of your money. And in many ways, you know, time can be harder to give than money, and you give both. And it's, you have for a very long time, like you toured with UNICEF for many, many years. You were an ambassador. We're Beauty gives a ton of money. I was really impressed with what you guys do with your.

• 57:21Speaker 05

And that's also the community because 1% of our product. So it's, again, it's people contributing to helping.

• 57:27Amy Poehler?

  It's awesome.

• 57:28Speaker 05

Young people have access to mental health.

• 57:31Amy Poehler?

When you are kind of one on one dealing with someone you've now been famous for a really long time and you have a lot of people who grew up with you and feel really invested in you and that's energy, right? Like they wanna, they wanna connect with you, you feel that. I know you've been like extremely loving and very supportive of people, but it's, it's a lot to be approached sometimes with a lot of energy. So what do you say no to now that you didn't before? Or how do you kind of like guard your own energy, your own?

• 58:03Speaker 05

It's very difficult for me to say no to, to people that I get to encounter. It's my Nana taking in her 14th picture of my outfit. I'm like, I can't do this. Please stop. I gotta go.

• 58:23Amy Poehler?

I gotta make your dumpling. You have to go make your dumpling.

• 58:26Speaker 05

But I, I don't think, I don't know how to, how to answer that.

• 58:32Amy Poehler?

Well, it's, I mean, maybe it's just become intuitive and also feels, may I answer for you?

• 58:39Speaker 05

Well, let me, yeah, cuz I'm thinking.

• 58:40Amy Poehler?

Well, because I feel protective of you because I, as a woman who is older and you know, I think you're, any woman in their 30s, I think, is doing that thing where they're trying to figure out basically what is expensive for me with energy. Basically, you start protecting it.

• 59:00Speaker 05

It is, and I think that'll happen more so if I, when I have kids.

• 59:07Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 59:08Speaker 05

I'll probably put more boundaries up for, you know, the sake of, of the sanity of, you know, what that will look like. I have no idea, but I, I just, I feel like I owe a lot of people in the world.

• 59:25Speaker 05

Any sort of smile, hug, you know, picture. So it's very hard. When I don't do it, I promise you, it's because I'm, I'm either really having a hard time dealing with my anxiety, or I'm late. Like, that's usually which I'm trying not to be. But like, if I have to go somewhere, but in, in general, it's, it's, it's very, it's, it's a lot. Cause I love doing it. I think about it too much where I'll think about if I missed that one person. It's so, it, it can get crazy in my head.

• 1:00:02Amy Poehler?

It can. It can be a little crazy making and it's, and, and Marty said something really sweet, which is like, you know, when, when you guys shoot in New York, you know, and there's whatever, you know, shooting in New York, just like living in New York is this, you're constantly on display and people will, you know, take photos. And he said like, Selena really understands that that's kind of part of the exchange and it doesn't really bother her unless anyone is rude to anybody who's like, you get very mom about that.

• 1:00:27Speaker 05

I get very, yeah. I actually, that was probably one of the, the pictures from season two. Someone said a vile word to someone else. And it was a photographer, thankfully not a fan of the show, but I just looked at him and I gave him the finger and there's just one shot of me and he missed it. So he wasn't even the one that got it because I looked at him and I was just like, yeah. And he like, the other people started laughing and I, I was like, I don't even care. I'm just so, I can't tolerate that kind of stuff, but then they want that reaction.

• 1:01:09Amy Poehler?

I know. They're baiting you, but you know, you're a human being. One finger in 33 years, like, there's probably been a couple more. We could probably find them.

• 1:01:18Speaker 05

  It's fine.

• 1:01:19Amy Poehler?

Okay. So I always ask my guests this, what, what stuff are you listening to right now? Watching?

• 1:01:26Amy Poehler?

Reading that makes you laugh. Cause it's not, it's a, it's, there's a, you've had in a beautiful couple of years. And also, you know, in the midst of like, there's a lot of heaviness in the world. Everybody is all, we're all in different spaces and places. And you've provided a lot of comedy for people who like really want to like, your show provides that for a lot of people. Who does that for you? Who are you?

• 1:01:54Speaker 05

Oh, well. It's more so. The experiences I have, I love, I love encountering silly moments and spontaneity. Because, you know, I don't have a lot of that in my life. Cause I try to schedule everything. So whenever something is spontaneous or even just being on Only Murders, as long as we work, it's, those are the joyous. You know, making someone laugh or. Or just having, you know, your partner laugh with you and, and you're watching a movie together. It's.

• 1:02:36Amy Poehler?

What movies made you laugh lately?

• 1:02:38Speaker 05

  Lately, uh, friendship.

• 1:02:40Amy Poehler?

Oh, yeah. Tim, are you a Tim Robinson fan?

• 1:02:42Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:02:43Amy Poehler?

Let's watch Tim, I love Tim Robinson so much.

• 1:02:46Speaker 05

Hilarious. And very, it was so funny because a lot of like mixed emotions for people, but I was just like, this is just so funny. Because how, you know, broad it is.

• 1:02:58Amy Poehler?

Him and Paul Redd are great in it. And also Tim Robinson is in like the best kind of insane. I mean.

• 1:03:06Speaker 05

It's like, where does he come up?

• 1:03:08Amy Poehler?

My kids are obsessed with Tim Robinson.

• 1:03:10Speaker 05

  Oh, that's awesome.

• 1:03:12Amy Poehler?

And have you watched his TV show?

• 1:03:14Speaker 05

  No.

• 1:03:14Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 1:03:15Speaker 05

That's what, yeah, that's what I need to get on.

• 1:03:18Amy Poehler?

  You're gonna love it.

• 1:03:19Speaker 05

  It's, cause I.

• 1:03:20Amy Poehler?

I think you should leave. I think it's three seasons.

• 1:03:22Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:03:23Amy Poehler?

  It's so funny.

• 1:03:24Speaker 05

  What I'll be doing now.

• 1:03:25Amy Poehler?

  It's.

• 1:03:26Speaker 05

I love it. I love it, but I'm also a big like lately, we've seen all the horror films, so.

• 1:03:32Amy Poehler?

Okay. You like to be scared?

• 1:03:33Speaker 05

  I loved Weapons.

• 1:03:35Amy Poehler?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:03:36Speaker 05

  That movie, yes.

• 1:03:37Amy Poehler?

  Thank you.

• 1:03:37Speaker 05

  I know, I know.

• 1:03:38Amy Poehler?

Oh, I just don't like to be scared.

• 1:03:39Speaker 05

  No, but.

• 1:03:40Amy Poehler?

  I heard it's amazing.

• 1:03:41Speaker 05

About 70% of the people in my life.

• 1:03:44Amy Poehler?

I saw the thing with the children running and I was like, that's a hell no for me. No way am I going to the movie, like two tickets, please. No way.

• 1:03:55Speaker 05

  I know.

• 1:03:56Amy Poehler?

  No way.

• 1:03:57Speaker 05

  I know.

• 1:03:58Amy Poehler?

  I don't like.

• 1:03:58Speaker 05

  It's such a weird thing.

• 1:03:59Amy Poehler?

But you like being scared a little bit.

• 1:04:01Speaker 05

  I do, I do.

• 1:04:01Amy Poehler?

  Fun.
