Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence exploded onto the scene 15 years ago with an Oscar nomination for WINTER'S BONE. An Oscar win for SILVER'S LINING PLAYBOOK and an iconic role in THE HUNGER GAMES soon came after and there's been no looking back since. She joins Josh to reflect on it all and talk about her acclaimed new film DIE MY LOVE, now available on MUBI. Recorded at the 92nd Street Y. How do you silence the part of your brain that says, "What I'm doing is really embarrassing and silly on set"?

• 0:37Speaker 02

I can't believe you just said that, because that is something that I've had to get over for years. I think acting is very embarrassing, and that's why I don't rehearse and stuff, because I'm afraid the camera guys are gonna be like, "Ooh, nerd."

• 0:49Josh Horowitz?

  Could you believe that?

• 0:50Speaker 02

Yeah. And now you've just put it back in my... This is like when a friend visited me one time, and she was like, "I like finished doing a take", and she was like, "How do you know what to do with your hands"? And I was like, "F***."

• 1:04Speaker 03

Prepare your ears, humans. Happy, Sad, Confused begins now.

• 1:12Josh Horowitz?

Hey, guys, it's Josh. Welcome to another edition of Happy, Sad, Confused. Today on the show, a first-time guest, the great Jennifer Lawrence, talking all things, from Hunger Games all the way up to her latest film, Die, My Love. This is a special, special episode. Thanks, guys, as always, for tuning in, for listening or watching, however you're enjoying the podcast. I appreciate all of you. I'm so thrilled this episode happened at long last. Jennifer Lawrence has been on the list for a long while to do the pod. Having been at MTV for many, many years when The Hunger Games came around and X-Men, I certainly spent a lot of time interviewing Jennifer Lawrence over the years, but we never had this kind of deep-dive conversation.

• 1:55Josh Horowitz?

She is one of a kind as an actor, but also just as a person to talk to. If you've seen her on talk shows, et cetera, you know how lively and fun and spontaneous and irreverent she can be. And she has all of those things in this conversation. I couldn't be more pleased with it. I know you guys are gonna dig it. Her new film, I should say. An extraordinary piece of work. This comes from the great director Lynn Ramsey. It is Jennifer. It is Robert Pattinson. This is the portrait of a couple coming undone in the wake of having a child. It is, it features remarkable performances, but truly led by Jennifer at the forefront as a woman really just coming undone, falling apart.

• 2:40Josh Horowitz?

And she gives everything of herself as a performer and it is all up there on the screen. And it really is one of her best performances and that's saying a lot for a four-time Oscar nominee. So check out Die My Love. It's on movie right now. So if you have movie, check it out. If you don't have movie, get movie and then watch this film because it's fantastic. And Lynn Ramsey, if you don't know her as a filmmaker, look her up. Her filmography is impeccable and she always delivers and she does with this one.

• 3:08Josh Horowitz?

Other things to say, not much, except that this was recorded at the 92nd Street Y. This was a live event. This was a fun audience and it was just a really special night and I'm so, so happy it came together. As always, if you want to get in on all the action of Happy, Sad, Confused, early access, all that kind of fun stuff, patreon.com/happysaidconfused is where it's at. You get discount codes for events like this one. You get bonus materials, get merch, all the cool fun stuff. So if you like what I do and you want to support what I do, please check out our Patreon, patreon.com/happysaidconfused. And now without any further ado, I take you to the 92nd Street Y. A very fun evening, a lot of laughs for a film that's pretty serious.

• 3:50Josh Horowitz?

This is me and the one and only Jennifer Lawrence. Enjoy. Hi, everybody. How's it going? Welcome to the 92nd Street Y. My name's Josh Horowitz. I host the podcast called Happy, Sad, Confused and you're inside of it, whether you knew it or not. Thank you for coming out tonight. I'm so thrilled you're with us because this is a very special night. We have the one and only Jennifer Lawrence here. You know that, right? Okay. Just checking. I've been privileged enough to chat with Jennifer Lawrence a lot over the years, but she's never done the podcast before, so we figured we'd have this conversation in front of 600 of our closest friends. So, thank you for being here again. I don't really need to give much of an introduction to Jennifer Lawrence, obviously. I think it

• 4:34Josh Horowitz?

was exactly 15 years ago where she received her first Oscar nomination for Winter's Bone. And I think, I speak for all of us, when we saw that film, we saw that performance, we literally saw a star being born on screen. And since then, whether it's The Hunger Games films, Causeway, I mean, don't look up, so many amazing performances. She can truly, truly do it all. And now with this collaboration with the great Robert Pattinson, the great filmmaker Lynn Ramsey, she's getting some of the best reviews of her career. Zai My Love is an exceptional piece of work, and we are so thrilled it has brought her to the 92nd Street Y for the very first time tonight. So, without any further ado, give it up for Jennifer Lawrence, everybody. Here she is.

• 5:34Josh Horowitz?

We already got the awkward non-hug out of the way.

• 5:37Speaker 02

Yeah, you've been interviewing me for like 30 years.

• 5:40Josh Horowitz?

I know, you were minus three.

• 5:42Speaker 02

So, I'm like, is it a hug, or is it, I guess it's just like a...

• 5:46Josh Horowitz?

  Sup.

• 5:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 5:48Josh Horowitz?

  Sup, Jennifer?

• 5:49Speaker 02

  Sup, Josh.

• 5:50Josh Horowitz?

  Congratulations on this film.

• 5:52Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 5:53Josh Horowitz?

You killed it. First of all, do you get nervous about these kinds of things at this point in your career? You've been on the Oscar stage many times, you've done all the award shows, the talk shows. Does this kind of thing freak you out, or no?

• 6:06Speaker 02

I'm really tired, which is helping, but I, no, I do have a, I hate speaking in front of people.

• 6:14Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, gosh.

• 6:15Speaker 02

It really gets, gets my ticker going.

• 6:18Josh Horowitz?

Here we go. Well, this hopefully will put you at ease. Kim Caramelli sent in a question for you.

• 6:23Speaker 02

  Oh, my God, no way!

• 6:25Josh Horowitz?

Yes. Kim is a very close friend of Jennifer, is an amazing writer...

• 6:28Speaker 02

One of my best friends in the world, she's Amy Schumer's little sister.

• 6:32Josh Horowitz?

And an amazing writer. I think you guys are cooking up something, perhaps you're working on some stuff.

• 6:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 6:36Josh Horowitz?

She would like to know which of your children is your favorite.

• 6:42Speaker 02

  God, um.

• 6:48Josh Horowitz?

You can think about it through the hour and get back to us at the end.

• 6:50Speaker 02

  Yeah, I will. I'll tell them when they're 18.

• 6:52Josh Horowitz?

Have you thought about at what age you will show "Dime I Love" to your children?

• 6:55Speaker 02

Oh, God. No, I, all my, all my friends are, all actors that are parents, they all say that their kids like don't.

• 7:03Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 7:03Speaker 02

  They never see your movie.

• 7:05Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 7:05Speaker 02

  You're like, yeah.

• 7:06Josh Horowitz?

  They're, yeah.

• 7:07Speaker 02

  I can't.

• 7:08Josh Horowitz?

They're gonna be the only non-Hunger Games children.

• 7:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:11Josh Horowitz?

So are you, I'm curious actually what you were exposed to as a kid, growing up, in terms of film? Like, were you, were you watching like R-rated films, or were your parents strict about that kind of a thing?

• 7:21Speaker 02

I was a third kid. I was a mistake, so I, they didn't pay attention to what I was watching at all. I mean, I, I was in, I was born in the 90s, so John Hughes was a huge, um, guy.

• 7:41Speaker 02

And, yeah, I, I've always liked scary movies. I was super into Nip Tuck.

• 7:49Speaker 02

Yeah, it was like, it was, yeah, R and John Hughes.

• 7:52Josh Horowitz?

Were there, were there films that you feel like you saw way too early that made an imprint on you for good or for bad?

• 7:56Speaker 02

I think Nip Tuck should not be watched by an 11-year-old.

• 8:00Josh Horowitz?

And that was just on normal TV? It wasn't even like on HBO or anything, right? It was like...

• 8:04Speaker 02

I had the DVDs and I, yeah, I, I watched it on DVD. And I remember like a, a girl is naked and has a saddle on her back.

• 8:14Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 8:14Speaker 02

And I was like, huh. I didn't know that that was how sex is made.

• 8:21Speaker 02

  You tack her up.

• 8:22Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. Now you know that's the only way sex is made, yeah.

• 8:25Speaker 02

Yeah, and I'm like, oh my God, I'm gonna see John Schaefer at this party, but I don't have my saddle.

• 8:33Josh Horowitz?

There's no good segue, but let's do it. Die, My Love. Here we go.

• 8:37Speaker 02

It's like I'm go between being nervous and being too comfortable.

• 8:41Josh Horowitz?

  Perfect.

• 8:41Speaker 02

I'm gonna try to strike the right balance.

• 8:43Josh Horowitz?

We got this. We got this. The meds are gonna kick in any minute now.

• 8:47Speaker 02

  Did you take propalol?

• 8:49Josh Horowitz?

I took it all. I took everything backstage I could find.

• 8:51Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 8:51Josh Horowitz?

  No.

• 8:52Speaker 02

Nice of you to offer me some.

• 8:55Josh Horowitz?

Okay, so this film begins in some ways with a phrase I never thought I would utter. Martin Scorsese's book club. Did you guys know Martin Scorsese is part of a book club? He has a book club?

• 9:08Josh Horowitz?

Tell me more. What do I need to know?

• 9:10Speaker 02

Well, I did end up asking him who's in the book club and then I forgot. So, someone named Fran.

• 9:20Speaker 02

Anyway, he emailed me and said, I guess he like set up a Zoom and so I got on the Zoom, obviously. You know, it was like, and he said that he had read this book in his book club and he thought that it would be a great movie, that I should be in it. And so I read it immediately. My son, my firstborn, was six weeks old. So I was in postpartum. I wasn't having like a terrible time, but, and I read it. And then I didn't quite, if you've read the book, it's not clear how it would be a movie because it's all kind of internal dialogue and it's changing landscapes a lot. It's not very linear.

• 10:06Speaker 02

So I was kind of like, what is he talking about? But I didn't want to go back and say that. So I sat with it for a while and then, you know, it was just like, it's poetry. And so the only filmmaker, I mean, the director that I think of when I think poetry is Lynn Ramsey. She's just, I've been a huge fan of her work for such a long time. And that's, that's her wheelhouse. So we went out to her and she hadn't made a movie in like eight years. And she, and she said, yes.

• 10:38Josh Horowitz?

I like that in some ways this began as just not wanting to disappoint Martin Scorsese. Like now I have to make the film. I have to figure out.

• 10:45Speaker 02

Yeah, because I can't call back and be like, I don't get it. I don't, yeah. Maybe you should try someone else.

• 10:50Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. Do you have any other ideas, Marty?

• 10:53Speaker 02

  Not this one.

• 10:55Josh Horowitz?

Talk to me a little bit about, I mean, are you the kind of actor that keeps like a secret or not so secret list of filmmakers that you want to work with?

• 11:01Speaker 02

  Yeah, for sure.

• 11:02Josh Horowitz?

She was on that list for a while?

• 11:04Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah, big time.

• 11:05Josh Horowitz?

And are you chasing like a certain kind of experience?

• 11:08Speaker 02

  Olivier Assai.

• 11:09Josh Horowitz?

Oh, yeah, let's do it. Let's go down.

• 11:10Speaker 02

Park Chan Wook, Christopher Nolan, PTA.

• 11:15Josh Horowitz?

Have you had, you must have had the Nolan meeting, the PTA meeting, those things.

• 11:19Speaker 02

  No.

• 11:20Josh Horowitz?

  Rude.

• 11:21Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 11:22Josh Horowitz?

Wow. Tarantino's been chasing you. He wants you.

• 11:25Speaker 02

Um, I don't know about that.

• 11:27Josh Horowitz?

That's true. No, he said that. Hateful Eight, the Jennifer Jason Leigh part was originally written for you, I believe.

• 11:32Speaker 02

I turned it down, which I should not have done.

• 11:36Josh Horowitz?

And I think Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, too. Didn't he want you?

• 11:41Speaker 02

Well, he did, and then everybody was like, she's not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate. And then they didn't, I know.

• 11:49Josh Horowitz?

  That's not true.

• 11:52Speaker 02

I'm pretty sure it is true. Or it's that thing where I've been telling this story this way for so long that I believe it. No, but I'm pretty sure that happened. Or he just never was considering me for the part, and the internet just like went out of their way to call me ugly.

• 12:06Josh Horowitz?

The internet, I know the internet. It would never do that.

• 12:10Speaker 02

  No. Those Sweetie Pies?

• 12:14Josh Horowitz?

They should rename the internet just Sweetie Pies.

• 12:17Speaker 02

  Sweeties, yeah.

• 12:18Speaker 04

• 13:56Josh Horowitz?

So the Lynn Ramsey experience, now that you've had it, how would you define it? What does she do on set that elicits what we've seen in all her work, including this one?

• 14:05Speaker 02

I mean, you know, it's not like that. It's not really, you know, it's not like it's this big show. She really kind of slowly builds the world and, you know, for years, like sending scenes and us talking about the character and just kind of like in the music. She plays music on set, which is, I've never had a director do that. And then she kind of steps back and she's really not, she's not like an over manager at all.

• 14:35Josh Horowitz?

It's more about just setting the mood, making the actors feel free.

• 14:39Speaker 02

And then I think in editing, I think that's probably where she really comes alive.

• 14:43Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 14:45Josh Horowitz?

For you, in addition to Lynn, it's also about, obviously, the cast. And as I understand it, you basically got all your first choices in this.

• 14:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:52Josh Horowitz?

I love what Rob Pattinson has done with his career. Having covered him right from the beginning in Twilight and to see what he did post Twilight and where he's at now is just remarkable.

• 15:01Speaker 02

Yeah, he makes really cool choices.

• 15:03Josh Horowitz?

Totally. I mean, from the beginning, right after he was doing Cronenberg work, right?

• 15:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:07Josh Horowitz?

Working with all the great filmmakers.

• 15:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:08Josh Horowitz?

So, talk to me, like, what did you, did you know Rob at all? Because famously, you've said before you auditioned for Twilight, but I assume that wasn't with Rob in the room, or was it?

• 15:17Speaker 02

No, it was not. Yeah, I auditioned and didn't get that because I guess I was too ugly.

• 15:25Josh Horowitz?

  No.

• 15:27Josh Horowitz?

We're not making that the theme of the evening.

• 15:29Speaker 02

  That's what you said.

• 15:29Josh Horowitz?

No. The sweetie pie said that.

• 15:31Speaker 02

You just said that. And so, I didn't know Rob. I mean, I've like met him just from, you know, like, hi, how are ya? But I didn't know him, but I love him as an actor and have been wanting to work with him. And, yeah, I think he makes really cool choices and just has a very cool career. And he said yes. And he was just, he brought so much, you know, he like, in the book and kind of in the script, the husband was just so pathetic that there was like, she just bowled over him and it wasn't really interesting. And he really like, kind of added this spine to his character and would push back, which

• 16:14Speaker 02

was great for my performance, gave me something to push back against, but also you could see why they were together.

• 16:23Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. Do you approach the actual work in the same way? Do you need to approach work in a similar way to your co-star on screen? Do you find that helpful or necessary, or?

• 16:34Speaker 02

No, I don't normally, yeah, no, I don't normally share.

• 16:41Josh Horowitz?

  Process, whatever we call it.

• 16:42Speaker 02

Process, yeah, and I mean, Rob was like, had to like cry, and I kept, I kept being like, "Oh my god, do you remember?" And I kept saying like, it was like I was sabotaging him.

• 16:54Josh Horowitz?

  On set, like, right before?

• 16:55Speaker 02

On set, and I kept being like, "Stop doing that." Um, but no, I don't, no.

• 17:01Josh Horowitz?

  Well, you, you do famous-

• 17:02Speaker 02

But he has really bad memorization skills, so he has to prepare a lot.

• 17:07Josh Horowitz?

Oh, I see. And you, on the flip side, so this is famously, for those who don't know, your process is very unique, and I've talked to like Frances Lawrence about this, and many people that have worked with you, um, it works for you not to have the lines drilled in until-

• 17:21Speaker 02

Yeah, this is just like something I've, I've like, a lie I've been developing for a long time, which is just like, it's my process.

• 17:28Josh Horowitz?

That's a nice way to put it.

• 17:29Speaker 02

And it's like, yeah, it's, it's, it's just not being prepared.

• 17:36Josh Horowitz?

No. I mean, the proof's in the pudding, it works for you, clearly, so-

• 17:40Speaker 02

Well, I, I can memorize quite fast, and so I, it, it's not necessary for me to like, you know, know my lines, like, you know, like a week before or something.

• 17:50Josh Horowitz?

Has it ever bit you in the ass, where it's like a ju-

• 17:52Speaker 02

  Yes, yes, Silver Linings.

• 17:55Josh Horowitz?

Oh, yeah, it was, I know what you're gonna say, yeah, it's the, um, recitation of all the sta- the stats, right, yeah.

• 18:00Speaker 02

The sta- the stats, because normally you're following a train of thought.

• 18:03Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 18:04Speaker 02

But in Silver Linings, I had this long line that was like, you know, sports teams, and ten to two, and like, numbers, and I just didn't look at the call sheet for the next day, didn't know that we were shooting that scene, and then that day comes up, it's with Robert De Niro, which is like, you know, what a little shit, like, oh, I'm gonna take time out of Robert De Niro's day, so I memorized it, and I, I did it on the first take perfectly, and then fucked up every other take after that.

• 18:39Josh Horowitz?

He's worked with you since, he obviously forgave and forgave.

• 18:40Speaker 02

Yeah, and you know what? I got away with it, and that's why I continue this process.

• 18:47Josh Horowitz?

  I mean...

• 18:47Speaker 02

It really taught me that I can get away with a lot more than I thought.

• 18:50Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, you got an Oscar for that, so it worked.

• 18:53Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 18:54Josh Horowitz?

I mean, you also like, and you kind of alluded to this with Rob, is you can switch on and off very quickly, as I understand it, on set.

• 19:03Speaker 02

Yeah, I have to, my attention span.

• 19:07Speaker 02

I'm at the whim of it.

• 19:10Josh Horowitz?

Does that always, does that ever freak out an actor you're working with? I mean...

• 19:14Speaker 02

Yeah, a lot of people don't like that. Or like, they are focused and don't wish to hang.

• 19:25Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, engage in the frivolity, yeah.

• 19:27Speaker 02

Or like afterwards, they're kind of coming out of this state, and I'm, you know, down to hang again.

• 19:37Speaker 02

So I work on it, but I read, I bring my Kindle, and so when I'm working with those kind of people, I just kind of, I read.

• 19:46Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 19:47Speaker 02

  I'm like...

• 19:48Josh Horowitz?

Unless you're mocking the co-star about the ability to cry.

• 19:52Speaker 02

Well, it was like, there was something that had happened, I don't know, it was one of the, it was church giggles, you know? He was like crying because his dad in the movie had died, and it was really serious, and I just kept thinking of this really funny thing.

• 20:09Speaker 02

And I couldn't not share, you know?

• 20:13Josh Horowitz?

Is this, as you approach like, the first day of work on something like this, do you get nervous? Do you get like imposter syndrome as...

• 20:19Speaker 02

Yeah, every time I work, like, I'm working in February, and I'm, I'm just, I'm more familiar with the feeling, but it's, every time before I do a movie, I believe that I cannot do this one. Like, I've been able to do those other movies, but I don't know how I'm gonna do this, and I'm not gonna be able to do it. And it's just, that's just my anxiety. Or it's true.

• 20:44Josh Horowitz?

No, again. I guess the good thing, this one is day one, you literally dove right in. What did you shoot on day one of this?

• 20:52Speaker 02

The naked sex kind of tiger, tiger stuff.

• 20:57Josh Horowitz?

So, you're committed, you're all in.

• 20:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 21:00Josh Horowitz?

  There's no going back.

• 21:01Speaker 02

Yeah. It was actually easier that way because Rob and I did not know each other, which is kind of better, you know, like in Hunger Games, like me and Josh Hutcherson would have to like kiss and that's like, imagine, you know?

• 21:19Speaker 02

  Imagine it.

• 21:19Josh Horowitz?

  Okay. Give me a second.

• 21:23Speaker 02

You know, it gets like weirder and so, yeah, I was doing it with a stranger is preferable.

• 21:30Josh Horowitz?

There's your PSA of the night.

• 21:34Josh Horowitz?

I asked Harrison Ford this once, like, how do you silence the part of your brain?

• 21:38Speaker 02

  Game dropper.

• 21:38Josh Horowitz?

  Well.

• 21:41Josh Horowitz?

It's my job. Like, how do you silence the part of your brain that says what I'm doing is really embarrassing?

• 21:47Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 21:47Josh Horowitz?

  And silly on set?

• 21:50Speaker 02

I can't believe you just said that because that is something that I've had to get over for years. I think acting is very embarrassing and that's why I don't like rehearse and stuff because I'm afraid the camera guys are gonna be like, "Oh, nerd."

• 22:02Josh Horowitz?

  Could you believe that?

• 22:04Speaker 02

Yeah. And now you've just put it back in my... This is like when a friend visited me one time and she was like, I like finished doing a take and she was like, "How do you know what to do with your hands?"

• 22:13Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 22:13Speaker 02

  And I was like, "Fuck."

• 22:18Josh Horowitz?

The Talladega Nights thing, yeah, that's the whole, yeah, that's right, yeah.

• 22:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:21Josh Horowitz?

So how do you silence that part of your brain when you're on set and you have to like, there's a lot of like stuff in this film that I would imagine in other contexts you would feel totally embarrassed to do.

• 22:33Speaker 02

What? You're kind of being rude.

• 22:37Speaker 02

  Like, what is so embarrassing?

• 22:38Josh Horowitz?

No, I mean, like, again, you're in front of strangers, you're naked, you're crawling around, you're like...

• 22:43Speaker 02

Yeah, oh god, yeah, the tiger thing, that was embarrassing. Well, Lynn had us do interpretive dance lessons together before we started shooting. We got to Calgary like three weeks before we started shooting. Rob and I both embarrass very easily. And that was mortifying. It was, I mean, I'm not like a good dancer, Rob's a worse dancer. And, and it was like, you know, like, "Now blow like a tree" and now... Like it was just so embarrassing. And so I think by the time she was like, yeah, get naked, we were just kind of like, okay.

• 23:22Josh Horowitz?

At least it's not interpretive dance.

• 23:24Speaker 02

Truly, like at least it was a choreographed dance that we had both learned, you know.

• 23:29Josh Horowitz?

Does Rob hate dancing more than you hate singing?

• 23:33Speaker 02

  I bet it's, I bet it's equal.

• 23:35Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. You do, you do sing a bit in this, in this film.

• 23:39Speaker 02

  I, I can't get away from it.

• 23:40Josh Horowitz?

  I know, that's what I'm saying.

• 23:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 23:42Josh Horowitz?

The world wants you to sing.

• 23:44Speaker 02

  No, they don't.

• 23:46Josh Horowitz?

Have you ever auditioned for a musical? Have you ever?

• 23:49Speaker 02

  No.

• 23:52Josh Horowitz?

  You would never.

• 23:53Speaker 02

I'm not like lying about that I hate.

• 23:55Josh Horowitz?

There's autotune, they can do wonders in post.

• 23:58Speaker 02

Yeah, they, they can, they did.

• 24:02Josh Horowitz?

So like, what does that say on the page? Like what's, what's in the script for that?

• 24:05Speaker 02

It was actually, we were flipping burgers and I, like he was like grilling or something and I think actually I proposed to him and then we were, you know, I don't know, not shooting yet and Lynn had like looked out at the field and looked at the light and the light was really beautiful and she was like, crawl in the grass. I mean, it was incredible. She was very, uh, free like that.

• 24:36Josh Horowitz?

This is like Terrence Malick territory.

• 24:38Speaker 02

  Yeah, totally.

• 24:38Josh Horowitz?

Right. Let's chase that butterfly for a few hours.

• 24:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:41Josh Horowitz?

  It's amazing.

• 24:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:43Josh Horowitz?

Was there, was there a Kardashian tent on this one or something comparable?

• 24:47Speaker 02

No, I didn't have a Kardashian tent on this one.

• 24:50Josh Horowitz?

Was that just on Mother? Famously Jennifer had a Kardashian tent where she went to kind of like decompress Kardashians.

• 24:57Speaker 02

Yeah, I had my like baby died in that movie and I had never done something that like dark, like had to imagine feeling something that dark. So I had this tent, I mean, I would have a tent anyway. Cause there was like hundreds of extras or whatever. So just like in between for me to like go sit and like eat and peace, whatever. But I had Kardashians playing on the laptop and like gum balls and it just kind of turned into like a happy place.

• 25:29Josh Horowitz?

What would be in your, your happy place will be playing now? Are you? You're watching heated rivalry yet? Everyone's talking about it. What are you?

• 25:37Speaker 02

  Watching what?

• 25:38Josh Horowitz?

Do you know about this? Heated rivalry?

• 25:39Speaker 02

Oh, heated rivalry. I thought you said diarrhea.

• 25:42Josh Horowitz?

Are you watching the diarrhea show?

• 25:43Speaker 02

I'm, I'm, I'm behind on heated rivalry, but probably Mom's Secret Lives of Mormon TikTokers.

• 25:50Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 25:51Speaker 02

I think that's just like, creme de la creme perfection. And the way it ended, really good. Yeah, it would probably be that. I don't have as much time.

• 26:04Josh Horowitz?

  Family, boo.

• 26:05Speaker 02

  TV anymore.

• 26:07Josh Horowitz?

Do you, you're, you're so self-deprecating to an insane degree about all of your work. Are you able to look at this and take some pride? Like, I mean, how are you watching yourself watching this film? Watching this performance? Can you take a moment to be like, this is new territory?

• 26:22Speaker 02

This is good. Yeah. Yeah. I'm, if I'm not like, like cringing, then that like-

• 26:29Josh Horowitz?

  That means A+.

• 26:30Speaker 02

That means like, she approves, you know, and I don't, I don't, I don't cringe. I'm like, no.

• 26:36Josh Horowitz?

What percentage of your films would you be able to sit down and watch? Like, like Tom Hanks famously said, like, I've made four good movies in my career and the world was like-

• 26:45Speaker 02

  Four? Jeez.

• 26:46Josh Horowitz?

  I know.

• 26:47Speaker 02

Who is the Duchess of Dochester over here? I mean, so many great films, not four. Pieces of this one. I don't know.

• 26:59Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 27:00Speaker 02

I don't know. Silver Linings, certainly. And this.

• 27:06Josh Horowitz?

  Okay, can we, yeah.

• 27:07Speaker 02

  I can't answer that. I don't know. I mean, whatever.

• 27:12Speaker 02

I'm just not thinking of the others. That's so rude to everybody else I've ever, every movie I've worked on.

• 27:17Josh Horowitz?

  It's a gem.

• 27:18Speaker 02

  I love.

• 27:18Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, there it is. Rewrites. Like, can we reminisce for a second? Because we first did get to know each other when it was all happening at the beginning. And it was such an insane, it must have been such an insane time for you. I think I met you- Before you shot Hunger Games, it was probably in that period right around then.

• 27:35Speaker 02

Because it was for Silver Linings, right?

• 27:37Josh Horowitz?

Well, probably even before then. I remember the first time I remember meeting you was for the MTV Movie Awards. Like, we did a silly bit where you were training me to be a red carpet host. Thank you for that.

• 27:47Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 27:47Josh Horowitz?

I know. And you had shot X-Men, but you hadn't shot

• 27:51Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 27:51Josh Horowitz?

  Hunger Games.

• 27:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:52Josh Horowitz?

Just to orient you. But my question is, you knew, you were very aware when you signed on for Hunger Games that your life was going to change. And in fact, you took a minute.

• 28:03Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 28:04Josh Horowitz?

Right? You took a few days to decide. Like, did you come up with like a list of pros and cons? Like, how close did you come to not accepting that role at the time?

• 28:14Speaker 02

Um, I don't know. I mean, I didn't make like a list, a physical one, but yeah, in my mind. Because I had reached this point in my career that was like really lovely. It was like I was doing indies, which was what I wanted to do. Um, and I had just finished doing a sitcom where I had a steady paycheck. And I, um, you know, got this. It was basically like I could act, but I wasn't like very, very famous.

• 28:48Josh Horowitz?

You could lead a normal life.

• 28:49Speaker 02

I could have a normal life. And like my, I've just always wanted to be a mom. That's just ever since I was little. I just always wanted to be a mom. And so that was kind of always what I was going towards and like manifesting, if you will. And so when I, this just getting off of The Hunger Games, it just, it just looked so different than the original future that I had pictured for myself.

• 29:16Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 29:16Speaker 02

Which was like, you know, a soccer mom and like, and Twilight was happening and you could see how intense it was. It was like helicopters going over. It was just, it was so different that, you know, as much as I wanted to do it and I'm, you know, and, and, yeah, I really wanted to do it, but I wanted to be very thoughtful.

• 29:40Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 29:40Speaker 02

And make sure that I had really taken the time to consider before I make this huge change to my life. And it was, I'm really happy that I did. I mean, I'm so happy I did it and I have no regrets at all, but, I mean, I got famous just from signing on to those movies.

• 29:57Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 29:58Speaker 02

Like, I would get recognized as the girl who is going to play Katniss.

• 30:01Josh Horowitz?

About a year or so ago, I caught up with Josh Hutcherson on the stage, actually. It was great to catch up with him, a gem. I can't believe it's been 10 years since you guys.

• 30:10Speaker 02

  I cannot believe it.

• 30:11Josh Horowitz?

  Time has no meaning.

• 30:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:13Josh Horowitz?

Since Mockingjay Part Two. When I spoke to you guys back then, you were like, Josh Ophir is gonna be strong, it's never gonna die.

• 30:20Speaker 02

  It died.

• 30:20Josh Horowitz?

It might be in a coma. What's going on? What happened?

• 30:23Speaker 02

  I don't know. I mean, I've...

• 30:26Josh Horowitz?

  Have you guys ever...

• 30:26Speaker 02

  Should work together.

• 30:28Josh Horowitz?

Did you, have you ever discussed anything or no? I mean, obviously, I'm sure are in touch, or no?

• 30:32Speaker 02

Yeah, no, we're in touch. I don't think we've ever, maybe a couple things we've, like, passed back and forth, like, would you wanna do this, would you wanna do this? But there hasn't really been, like, a role. I think it would be in, I don't know, it should happen.

• 30:47Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. I think some people would be interested in that, potentially.

• 30:51Speaker 02

  Potentially.

• 30:52Josh Horowitz?

I'm gonna focus group it. Around that time, I guess that was probably the last period of time when you were auditioning for films. Thankfully, you probably haven't had to audition for quite a while. Were you a good auditioner back in the day? Did you...

• 31:03Speaker 02

  I was not, no.

• 31:04Josh Horowitz?

  (laughing)

• 31:06Speaker 02

I, I didn't, I didn't do, like, classes or lessons. So, when I started auditioning, I was just, you know, learning myself and, and teaching myself with no real feedback. So, like, I remember in one of my first auditions, I was going like this, which I thought was, like, brilliant, 'cause it's so realistic.

• 31:33Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 31:33Speaker 02

And they were like, they were like, "Cut, cut, what are you doing?" And I was like, "Well, the scene is outside." So I'm shielding. You see, I read that part.

• 31:46Speaker 02

And they were like, move your hand away from your face. So, stuff like that.

• 31:50Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 31:51Speaker 02

Yeah. No, I wasn't a good auditioner. But then every once in a while, you know, you get a call back or something and then you get something.

• 31:59Josh Horowitz?

True that you and your buddy Emma Stone were going up for a lot of roles way back when?

• 32:04Speaker 02

Everything, everything. And we, and we're on a group chat and she got nominated for a SAG today and I did not.

• 32:14Josh Horowitz?

  True.

• 32:14Speaker 02

And I wrote like, what? And all of our friends were like, congratulations, Emma. And then I would just do like a sad face emoji.

• 32:25Josh Horowitz?

  I'm right here, shut up.

• 32:26Speaker 02

Yeah. And then every time she's tried to like, talk today, I've just been like, why are you talking and not saying sorry? If you can talk, why are you not saying sorry?

• 32:36Speaker 02

But yeah, no, she's been beating me for, for decades. And it's an honor.

• 32:44Josh Horowitz?

Was one of them, did you, did you go up for Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man? Did you audition for that one?

• 32:48Speaker 02

No. They, they probably didn't even like, let me audition.

• 32:54Speaker 02

No, the one that I wanted that she, that she got was Easy A. I was nuts for Easy A and I really, I know. They're like, she should have gotten it, right? That was what that.

• 33:05Josh Horowitz?

The movie could have turned out really well.

• 33:07Speaker 02

It would have been great. It would have been way better.

• 33:12Josh Horowitz?

Who's a bigger Housewives fan, you or?

• 33:14Speaker 02

  Me.

• 33:17Speaker 02

Me. She's recently come onto it, it's nice because now I can like, talk to her about it.

• 33:21Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 33:21Speaker 02

But she doesn't, she doesn't follow nearly as many franchises as I do.

• 33:24Josh Horowitz?

But what about this, she just talked about this that came out, I think today, that she like, went to the courthouse when Jen Shaw was being.

• 33:31Speaker 02

  Yeah, she did.

• 33:32Josh Horowitz?

That's commitment. Would you do that for a Real Housewife? Would you go to a courthouse and just?

• 33:36Speaker 02

I wouldn't, but she's weird. Yeah, I wouldn't, but I don't, you know, she, she, I won't tell you where she lives, but. It was closer for her than it is for me.

• 35:16Josh Horowitz?

It just occurs to me, like, I don't know how any of you guys stay sane, given the amount of attention and everything you guys go through. I mean, Leonardo has famously said, like, the two rules, or supposedly he said this to Chalamet, were no hard drugs and no superheroes in managing a career. What would be Jennifer Lawrence's two rules for a young actor coming up now?

• 35:36Speaker 02

I've done superhero movies and drugs.

• 35:40Josh Horowitz?

And it worked out just fine.

• 35:41Speaker 02

I'm really gonna have to think of some...

• 35:43Josh Horowitz?

  Thank you.

• 35:44Speaker 02

  Two...

• 35:48Speaker 02

Oh, goodness. Nudes did that, too.

• 35:51Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, stop.

• 35:56Speaker 02

  Goodness.

• 35:57Josh Horowitz?

  It's okay, you don't.

• 35:58Speaker 02

I don't know, do whatever you want.

• 35:59Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 36:02Josh Horowitz?

You've been very frank and talked over the years about like how, I mean, you know how the nature of the media and the internet, what do we call the internet again?

• 36:10Speaker 02

  The little sweetie pies?

• 36:12Josh Horowitz?

The sweetie pies? How the sweetie pies like to build you up and then tear you down. And it happens with everybody, or happens with everybody in your profession, it seems.

• 36:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:20Josh Horowitz?

What was like the apex moment where you were like, oh my god, I'm like, I'm too high, this is too, too much?

• 36:26Speaker 02

Yeah, like when I was winning for Silver Linings and kind of that period, because Silver Linings and Hunger Games, I think they came out like in the same year.

• 36:35Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 36:36Speaker 02

And there was one of the award shows where I had won for like, something for the Hunger Games, for like, best upcoming star or something, and then was like backstage, and then won perform, this sounds so, I'm like trying to be like demure, and then I make, and then I won again. For, like, for something for Silver Linings, and then I was like backstage, and then Silver Linings won for Picture, and it was just like, I mean, thank god my parents were there, because it was just, you know, I remember my daddy said, if I was a bubble, you could pop me.

• 37:16Speaker 02

But anyway, around that time was when I was like, this is gonna get bad.

• 37:19Josh Horowitz?

Well, I can't even imagine also the surreality of like, you're sitting at home, I don't know what the context was when you saw like, Ariana Grande doing you on SNL, and you're like, I'm now at that stage where I am, someone is going to spoof me on a show on late night TV.

• 37:34Speaker 02

Yeah, no, it got too, it's like a balloon that just keeps getting like, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, and then, you know, inevitably, pops.

• 37:42Josh Horowitz?

Do you feel more in control of, I mean, you don't?

• 37:47Speaker 02

No, I feel more in control of like what I can say yes and no, too, but once I'm doing an interview, I don't have, I'm not like, but I'm not gonna talk about, you know, my butt, like, I just.

• 38:01Josh Horowitz?

Right, I have two cards about your butt.

• 38:07Josh Horowitz?

Can we tease your next collaboration? We talked about Martin Scorsese. You're gonna be working with Martin Scorsese.

• 38:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:12Josh Horowitz?

  He's directing you.

• 38:13Speaker 02

  I am.

• 38:13Josh Horowitz?

I'm very, very excited about this.

• 38:15Speaker 02

Yeah. Thank you. It's unbelievable. I'm gonna be working with Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese in the next couple of months.

• 38:31Josh Horowitz?

Has he given you like the homework, like the films to watch?

• 38:33Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 38:35Josh Horowitz?

Can you give me one or two?

• 38:38Speaker 02

I will. I'm gonna get there two weeks before.

• 38:41Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 38:41Speaker 02

We start shooting and I'm just gonna plow through.

• 38:44Josh Horowitz?

  We're not worried.

• 38:44Speaker 02

  Then.

• 38:45Josh Horowitz?

  You got this.

• 38:45Speaker 02

  Yeah, I'm not worried.

• 38:47Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 38:48Speaker 02

Unless he like asks me about them before we get there.

• 38:50Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 38:51Speaker 02

  That's what ChatGPT is for.

• 38:54Josh Horowitz?

Have you even looked at the list? Do you know any of the films that are on the list?

• 38:57Speaker 02

I know what the list is. Well, he's like sent the list and then I thought I saved the list, but I didn't. So I've asked for the list again.

• 39:04Josh Horowitz?

  No.

• 39:07Josh Horowitz?

Is he also doing the Miss Piggy project? Is he directing that one too? Or is that?

• 39:11Speaker 02

I'm just gonna say yes, because that'd be really good press for us.

• 39:14Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 39:14Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 39:15Josh Horowitz?

  This is real.

• 39:15Speaker 02

Martin Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson is writing a Miss Piggy movie.

• 39:20Josh Horowitz?

  Well, it is pretty cool.

• 39:21Speaker 02

  Marty to direct.

• 39:22Josh Horowitz?

  Cole Skola is writing.

• 39:23Speaker 02

  Cole Skola is writing.

• 39:23Josh Horowitz?

So that is pretty damn cool.

• 39:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:27Josh Horowitz?

And it's you and your buddy, Emma.

• 39:29Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 39:30Josh Horowitz?

And what else can we say? This is hard R-rated, fair? No, this is gonna be.

• 39:41Speaker 02

  Seventeen.

• 39:42Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, okay.

• 39:43Speaker 02

  No, it'll be, it's a family movie.

• 39:46Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 39:46Speaker 02

  For gays and women.

• 39:50Josh Horowitz?

  Can I come too?

• 39:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:52Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 39:56Josh Horowitz?

Is it true that you're thinking about directing? Seriously? Is that something that's on the list?

• 40:01Speaker 02

Yeah, Kim Caramelli, who asked which one of my children is my favorite. She and I have been writing this movie called Six Little Numbers. And it's funny, I think it's funny. And I would theoretically, I would star in it and direct it.

• 40:18Josh Horowitz?

  Feel...

• 40:19Speaker 02

I feel like I'm gonna vomit.

• 40:21Josh Horowitz?

Just even the idea of it, I mean, it's a lot, but that's exciting.

• 40:24Speaker 02

Yeah, just so embarrassing if it doesn't go well, like so...

• 40:28Josh Horowitz?

You got this. We have a couple...

• 40:30Speaker 02

Like if a movie comes out and like people don't like it, but like I just acted in it, you know? It's like not, but like if I directed it and it doesn't do, oh god.

• 40:42Speaker 02

  But it'll probably be fine.

• 40:44Josh Horowitz?

  I think so.

• 40:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:46Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, Francis Lawrence is directing a new Hunger Games movie. You guys should catch up, maybe.

• 40:51Speaker 02

  Maybe we already have.

• 40:54Josh Horowitz?

If you believe everything on the internet...

• 40:56Speaker 02

Oh yeah, it is out on the internet.

• 41:00Josh Horowitz?

So I should see that Hunger Games movie is what you're saying?

• 41:03Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 41:04Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 41:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:05Josh Horowitz?

I'll be there. Um, this is a new thing I've been doing with Guess Unhappy Second Fuse, to gauge some of your movie interests, okay? Are you an Alien or Aliens person, or neither?

• 41:16Speaker 02

Alien. Is Aliens the TV show?

• 41:19Josh Horowitz?

No, no, Aliens was the James Cameron, like the action, more of like the...

• 41:23Speaker 02

  And Alien was the...

• 41:24Josh Horowitz?

  The Ridley Scott, scary one.

• 41:25Speaker 02

  Alien.

• 41:26Josh Horowitz?

  Okay, great.

• 41:29Josh Horowitz?

  Six people agree, okay.

• 41:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:32Josh Horowitz?

Who's your favorite Spider-Man of all time, actor-wise?

• 41:35Speaker 02

  Uh, Tobey Maguire.

• 41:37Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, the OG.

• 41:40Josh Horowitz?

Do you have a favorite comic book movie of all time?

• 41:44Speaker 02

A favorite comic book movie of all time?

• 41:46Josh Horowitz?

  You've been in a few.

• 41:50Speaker 02

  I'm just gonna, whichever one's I'm in.

• 41:53Josh Horowitz?

There's this movie called First Class, I was in.

• 41:55Speaker 02

  First Class was great.

• 41:56Josh Horowitz?

  It was great.

• 41:57Speaker 02

  Objectively.

• 41:58Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, truly.

• 41:59Speaker 02

Hmm, I don't know. I don't know my favorite comic book movie. I like that one, I liked that show that came out, The Time, The Manhattan Man...

• 42:08Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, yeah, uh, Watchmen.

• 42:09Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 42:10Josh Horowitz?

Watchmen was amazing. That show was awesome.

• 42:12Speaker 02

  Yeah, it was great.

• 42:15Josh Horowitz?

Who's your favorite James Bond of all time?

• 42:18Speaker 02

I mean, the person who I think of is James Bond, I think more to do with when I was born, is Pierce Brosnan.

• 42:24Josh Horowitz?

Right. Scariest movie of all time?

• 42:26Speaker 02

Ooh, uh, oh, well, I, uh, the Ethan Hawke one, um...

• 42:32Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, Sinister?

• 42:33Speaker 02

Yeah. Ooh, that one is so scary.

• 42:37Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, I support it. Funniest movie of all time?

• 42:40Speaker 02

  Dumb and Dumber.

• 42:45Josh Horowitz?

What's the movie you can quote back?

• 42:46Speaker 02

I gotta put my shoulders down, I'm like...

• 42:49Josh Horowitz?

Being tested. What's a movie you can quote backwards and forwards?

• 42:53Speaker 02

  Well, Dumb and Dumber.

• 42:56Josh Horowitz?

  Makes sense.

• 42:56Speaker 02

  Naturally.

• 42:57Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay. And what's your go-to movie theater snack?

• 43:01Speaker 02

Movie theater snack is an icy.

• 43:04Josh Horowitz?

  Oh.

• 43:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:07Josh Horowitz?

  Interesting.

• 43:07Speaker 02

  They didn't see that coming.

• 43:08Josh Horowitz?

  No.

• 43:10Speaker 02

  Whoa.

• 43:11Josh Horowitz?

She's always surprising in every way.

• 43:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:13Josh Horowitz?

And we're gonna end with this. This is the Happy, Sad, Confused, Profoundly Random Questionnaire. Are you a dog or a cat person?

• 43:20Speaker 02

I'm really uncomfortable answering this question.

• 43:23Josh Horowitz?

  Why?

• 43:25Josh Horowitz?

Isn't it dogs? You have a dog.

• 43:28Speaker 02

  Not anymore.

• 43:29Josh Horowitz?

Oh my god, no. I'm sorry.

• 43:31Speaker 02

Oh no, she's alive. She's with my parents. I... you know...

• 43:38Josh Horowitz?

Never mind, I take back my sympathy. You got rid of your dog.

• 43:41Speaker 02

I... soon as I got a boyfriend, I was like, woo! Um, she did not like New York. And I lived on First and 67th just to be near the park, like, for her.

• 43:53Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 43:54Speaker 02

Anyway, after I had a kid, I... I... dogs became so scary, you know? Like, if my dog... my son's, like, going up to it, you know? And I'm like... and like, it's almost like I don't recognize dogs right now. Like, I just see them as a threat. Um, and one of them bit my son. And that made me just wanna obliterate every dog.

• 44:17Josh Horowitz?

  Gosh.

• 44:17Speaker 02

That's ever... I'm just like, I'm gonna take out you and your whole fucking family. And your fucking friends. I'm gonna go to China and take care of your friends over there. Like, anybody that looks like you is dead. Um, and so, I'm gonna say cats.

• 44:30Josh Horowitz?

  Oh my god.

• 44:32Speaker 02

And I like... I have a cat, and I feel like they're so misunderstood with, like, they are assholes. And the people who don't like that about cats aren't getting that that is what is so funny.

• 44:42Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 44:43Speaker 02

You know? Like, he, like, comes into the room, like, when my husband and I are watching TV, and he always makes it look like a coincidence, like, oh! I didn't know you guys were here.

• 44:54Josh Horowitz?

You guys still live here too? Cool.

• 44:56Speaker 02

  I guess I'll stay.

• 44:59Josh Horowitz?

Your next project, The Dog Assassin, Jennifer Lawrence, just mowing them down.

• 45:03Speaker 02

I know, and you just can't say that publicly, but...

• 45:05Josh Horowitz?

  You just did.

• 45:06Speaker 02

  I just did.

• 45:07Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah. What do you collect?

• 45:13Speaker 02

The tiny little wrenches that come with, like, things that you put together. Yeah, I'm just like, I'm gonna reuse this.

• 45:20Josh Horowitz?

  In case.

• 45:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:22Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 45:23Speaker 02

  Tiny little wrenches.

• 45:27Josh Horowitz?

This is the Dakota Johnson Memorial question. She asked me this. I ask everybody, would you rather have a mouthful of bees or one bee in your butt?

• 45:36Speaker 02

  One bee in my butt.

• 45:38Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. Oh, we got to the butt questions.

• 45:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:40Josh Horowitz?

  After all, we got there.

• 45:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:42Josh Horowitz?

What's the wallpaper on your phone?

• 45:44Speaker 02

My, one of my son's. Well, it's, well, one is, one is lock screen, one is one to open up.

• 45:50Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 45:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:53Josh Horowitz?

Who's the last actor you were mistaken for?

• 45:56Speaker 02

  Hmm.

• 45:57Josh Horowitz?

  Ever happen?

• 45:59Speaker 02

  Hmm. What?

• 46:04Speaker 02

  I don't, I don't recall that happening.

• 46:06Josh Horowitz?

Nice. There's only one Jennifer Lawrence, guys. Come on.

• 46:09Speaker 02

Oh, thank you. I mean, they just think I'm like her mom or something, but... They're like, I love your daughter's work.

• 46:17Josh Horowitz?

You're turning off that microphone in a second. What's the, what's the worst note a director has ever given you?

• 46:23Speaker 02

  Um...

• 46:28Josh Horowitz?

What don't you respond well to? Is there a general note or a...

• 46:32Speaker 02

Um, I didn't respond well. I was doing something like very subtle once, and then the director saw that I was doing it, and then asked me to like, like, I was basically like leaning kind of towards this person, and he was like, that's great, now reach out, and like, he basically just wanted to like exploit the subtle thing, and that just made me wanna just kill his dog.

• 47:01Josh Horowitz?

And in the spirit of happy, sad confused, who's an actor who always makes you happy. You see them on screen.

• 47:05Speaker 02

  It's Steve Martin.

• 47:07Josh Horowitz?

There it is. The jerk, where do you go? What's the Steve Martin?

• 47:11Speaker 02

Um, well, there was a DVD that we had at our house. I mean, all of them, like Planes, Trains and Automobiles, obviously, and The Jerk. But it was called Bringing Down the House, and it was with Queen Latifah.

• 47:24Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 47:24Speaker 02

Yeah, I had that DVD and I watched it a lot.

• 47:27Josh Horowitz?

Got some use out of it?

• 47:28Speaker 02

Yeah, I did. It sounded like I was masturbating. Which I wasn't.

• 47:34Josh Horowitz?

You're literally the only person that thought that, just for the record.

• 47:37Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 47:40Josh Horowitz?

Moving on. Movie that makes you sad?

• 47:45Speaker 02

Um, movie that makes me sad, I mean Driving Miss Daisy makes me sad. Oh, God, um.

• 47:53Josh Horowitz?

Not Marley and Me, you don't care about that, you're fine with that. Terms of Endearment, that's one of mine.

• 47:56Speaker 02

  Terms of Endearment, my God.

• 47:58Josh Horowitz?

  Screaming, give her.

• 47:59Speaker 02

  Woo, give her the medication.

• 48:01Josh Horowitz?

  Oh. Come on.

• 48:03Speaker 02

  Woof.

• 48:04Josh Horowitz?

And finally, a food that makes you confused. You don't get it, why do people eat that, Jennifer?

• 48:10Speaker 02

Um, a food that confuses me. You know what? I'm not a big fan of like, big, thick meat. Like, really, like, I mean, I'll eat, like, a steak, fine, but like a filet mignon, that's so

• 48:33Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, you don't like the height, you don't like the whole.

• 48:35Speaker 02

I need the seasoning to be almost equal parts to the middle, and when it's so thick.

• 48:40Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 48:41Speaker 02

You know, like, I'm not a lion, I'm not here to taste them, I want the seasoning. Like, I don't like, I don't love the way that the French do their steaks.

• 48:50Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 48:51Speaker 02

  I don't. Um.

• 48:53Josh Horowitz?

  You've lost.

• 48:56Speaker 02

  I'm losing so many.

• 48:57Josh Horowitz?

I was gonna say, you've lost the dog community.

• 48:59Speaker 02

Like, so, I know, the French, the entire French.

• 49:03Josh Horowitz?

You know who doesn't say things like this? Emma Stone, she wouldn't say that.

• 49:06Speaker 02

No, she really, really wouldn't. Um, so, yeah, I think big, thick meats.

• 49:11Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. I think that's the best phrase to end tonight on, don't you?

• 49:23Josh Horowitz?

In all seriousness, to bring it back full circle, I think we talked about "The Eye of My Love" for a portion of this, and we should have, because it's a fantastic piece of work, truly. Thank you. If you guys have not checked it out, please do. Spread the good word. It's a remarkable performance by one of our best. Give it up for the one and only Jennifer Lawrence. Thank you.

• 49:52Speaker 03
