There was one director in theater and he uh he liked to have control. And he would like deliberately call me Rebecca through the whole thing.

• 0:11Josh Horowitz?

  Was that your character name?

• 0:12Speaker 00

  No.

• 0:16Josh Horowitz?

  Makes sense.

• 0:18Speaker 00

It was, I just had to laugh. It's like so obvious.

• 0:21Josh Horowitz?

  What a lame power move.

• 0:22Speaker 00

Yeah, it is. I don't like those power moves.

• 0:25Speaker 02

Prepare your ears, humans. Happy, sad, confused begins now.

• 0:33Josh Horowitz?

Hey guys, it's Josh. Welcome to another edition of Happy, Say Confused. Today on the pod, Renata Rinesva, star of Sentimental Value, one of the best, most charming, coolest actors working today. So thrilled to have her on the pod for the very first time. Um, yes, we're talking all things sentimental value and more with Renata, but before we get to that, a couple of housekeeping things I want to just mention. As always, I do want to mention the Patreon, especially because not only do we have an upcoming event, Walker's Gobel. Uh, this is going to sell out. There are some tickets available, but if you have a Percy Jackson fan in your life and you're in New York in the holiday season, December 19th, come on out, Walker's Gobel, uh, patreon.com/happy say confused for ticket info and all of that.

• 1:16Josh Horowitz?

But not only that, we have so many other cool things cooking on the Patreon. Um, we have finally set up a Discord, which I'm really excited about. So that's a, obviously a community where you guys can all interact and talk about anything and everything related to Happy Say Confused, um, whatever you like, basically. That's for you. Plus, we have some really special, really, I can't, I can't quite say what it is, but we have some special Patreon only exclusives coming. Um, for those of you guys that choose to sign up over there. Now is a really good time. So patreon.com/happy say confused. There are different tier levels. Um, and honestly, it helps us make more cool stuff over here. So consider, if you can, uh, checking it out. Um, okay, back to Renata. I'm not going to say much except to say, if you haven't seen Worst Person in the World.

• 2:01Josh Horowitz?

Do that either before or after this podcast because that is a true star making film from Joachim Trier who directed it and Renata who starred in it. She seemingly came out of nowhere. Most of us had never seen her before unless you were like in the Norwegian theater scene. Perhaps you really didn't know who this person was. And then I feel like we all saw it and was like, where did this unicorn come from? She is so beautiful and charming and just amazing. And it wasn't a one hit wonder. No, she has succeeded that with a bunch of really cool projects. Whether it's being in Presumed Innocent, A Different Man with Sebastian Stan. By the way, she has reteamed with Sebastian. She talks about her next film with him. That sounds really cool. That's coming next year.

• 2:46Josh Horowitz?

And now in Sentimental Value, which I'm kind of obsessed with. I've done a bunch of Q and As with this cast. It is, it's Elle Fanning. It is Renata. It is Joachim Trier again directing. It is the great Stellan Skarsgård and it is about a family, about a filmmaker, two daughters. And how this filmmaker has neglected his family and how it kind of comes back to his family with some, some needs and interests after the mom dies. But it is about, I don't know, it's about the connections and the missed connections in family.

• 3:23Josh Horowitz?

The way we, you know, can fight and love and just go to, go to war with each other. Those that are closest to us. It is so expertly told, so well made. I can't recommend it highly enough. It's, it's emotional. It's just, it's a really special piece of work. And Joachim is a filmmaker that, you know, a lot of people are tracking, but more so than ever. Thanks to Worst Person and this one. So. Check that out. We also have, by the way, Elle Fanning. We taped the same day as this Renata conversation coming up on the podcast soon. And Elle is always, always an all-star here. She's a Patreon member, by the way, guys. Get with it. If Elle Fanning's a Patreon member,

• 4:08Josh Horowitz?

you should be. But yeah, I think you guys are gonna enjoy this conversation. Renata like projects kind of like one thing on screen, but like she's like, I don't know. I've gotten to know her a little bit in recent weeks and months, thanks to like some film festivals and parties. And she's just like silly and fun and cool, as you will see in this conversation. So I hope you enjoy it. I know you will. Check it out. And check out Sentimental Value, if you haven't already. Put it on your list. This is me and Renata Reinsve. Should we do this, Renata? We're here.

• 4:43Speaker 00

  Okay, let's do it.

• 4:44Josh Horowitz?

We've been leading to this for a while. We've had little like Q and As, little party meetups.

• 4:48Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 4:49Josh Horowitz?

But here we are. We're doing it.

• 4:50Speaker 00

  The last party.

• 4:53Josh Horowitz?

  I was fine.

• 4:54Speaker 00

We don't remember anything. We talked about some stuff.

• 4:57Josh Horowitz?

We did. We're not gonna talk about what we talked about.

• 4:59Speaker 00

But we don't, no, but we don't remember what it was.

• 5:00Josh Horowitz?

  I remember enough.

• 5:02Speaker 00

I also remember the other stuff that you don't remember.

• 5:05Josh Horowitz?

Did you run into, I didn't run into Kristen Stewart that night. She was at that party. I'm so upset. I missed her. Did you meet Kristen Stewart that night?

• 5:12Speaker 00

I actually met her right before I met you. But you also don't remember all of it.

• 5:17Josh Horowitz?

That's true. I could have reunited with Kristen Stewart.

• 5:19Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 5:19Josh Horowitz?

How many Twilight films have you seen, Renata?

• 5:25Josh Horowitz?

  It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. Hey, let's talk.

• 5:28Speaker 00

  I have seen one.

• 5:29Josh Horowitz?

  You have?

• 5:29Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 5:29Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 5:30Speaker 00

I have a sister she was really, really into.

• 5:32Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 5:33Speaker 00

  Yeah. Saw one.

• 5:34Josh Horowitz?

Okay. Are you bored of, of talking about yourself yet? You've been doing this, you've been doing this a while. This is the, the bonus of having a movie that people love is you get to just talk and talk and talk.

• 5:45Speaker 00

Well, I try not to talk too much about myself, but I love talking about the other actors.

• 5:49Josh Horowitz?

Nope. I don't care about them. Just you today.

• 5:52Speaker 00

  We're going deep in.

• 5:53Josh Horowitz?

  No.

• 5:53Speaker 00

  Who I am.

• 5:55Josh Horowitz?

Do you, do you watch or listen to things like this, like podcasts? Like, do you learn from hearing other actors talk about?

• 6:02Speaker 00

  I do.

• 6:02Josh Horowitz?

  Acting?

• 6:02Speaker 00

I love, I love to listen to actors talk about their work.

• 6:07Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 6:07Speaker 00

But I don't like to articulate my own work because it's so chaotic.

• 6:12Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 6:12Speaker 00

And that, I feel that's a force, that it, that I don't know what I'm doing. Well, I, I build a very like thorough analysis and then I go there and it's wild and free and raw in a way.

• 6:24Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 6:24Speaker 00

And then when I have to articulate it, I kind of have to put it into a system. But I, so I don't like doing it myself, but I love when other actors do it.

• 6:34Josh Horowitz?

What other actors have you gleaned something from? Who do you, can you think of some that you've like really just enjoyed hearing? Even if it's not your process that you're into.

• 6:42Speaker 00

I think I had this period where I, I watched a lot of interviews by Saoirse Ronan. Yeah, Saoirse Ronan, and she's, she's just so wonderful as a person. So I had like a, I just also just to see what the person is like and like, because in interviews, it's not that often you talk about the process itself, but you also get a sense of who they are and what life they've lived and how that affected their work in a way.

• 7:09Josh Horowitz?

Not to make this about me, but I'm going to tell you a story.

• 7:10Speaker 00

  Yes, please.

• 7:11Josh Horowitz?

Because I just spoke to Elle.

• 7:12Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 7:12Josh Horowitz?

And this is a really fascinating story. She was on the podcast a couple of years ago. I've known her first since she was a child, of course. But she had the podcast and then I chatted with Dan Trachtenberg, this guy who directed the Predator movie she was in. And he said that one of the reasons he cast her in Predator was our podcast. Was watching who she was off camera and getting the vibe of the person. I'm not saying this to toot my own horn, I'm just saying this goes in line with what, well, also there's that. So I said this to Elle too. A lot's riding on this, future employment. So be your most charming.

• 7:46Speaker 00

  Okay. This course.

• 7:50Josh Horowitz?

Getting tighter, what happened? We're taping this on the other end of the Thanksgiving holiday. You spent it here in the States.

• 7:57Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 7:57Josh Horowitz?

Did you do up the whole American? Did turkey, too many pies? What was your Thanksgiving?

• 8:02Speaker 00

We tried, but we were all European. So we didn't, we had like a duck.

• 8:09Josh Horowitz?

Oh, that's close, that's in the family, it's game.

• 8:11Speaker 00

  Close enough.

• 8:11Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 8:12Speaker 00

And we had a really good gravy. It was a really good gravy, but we didn't like overeat.

• 8:18Josh Horowitz?

Well, that needed to do it, right?

• 8:19Speaker 00

No, I don't think we did it, right?

• 8:20Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, you need to feel sick.

• 8:22Speaker 00

And we didn't watch football, we just talked.

• 8:25Josh Horowitz?

  Very European.

• 8:29Josh Horowitz?

What was your perspective on America growing up? Did you come to the States much? Like, did you?

• 8:35Speaker 00

No, I just saw it from, through MTV.

• 8:40Josh Horowitz?

So like, what was your impression of?

• 8:43Speaker 00

Like, it was really like a lot of lights and glitter and beauty and it was like, everyone was so on MTV like delicious and like sexy.

• 8:55Josh Horowitz?

  Obviously didn't see my work.

• 8:58Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 8:58Speaker 00

No, and also like, because I, of course, have watched so many movies from Hollywood and you know the changes it has made. It's been kind of, what's the word? Like, it's been, what's the word?

• 9:17Josh Horowitz?

  Give me the ballpark.

• 9:18Speaker 00

  You know, like.

• 9:19Josh Horowitz?

  Homogenized, like, like, like.

• 9:21Speaker 00

It's made some changes, like it's had an effect on the whole world.

• 9:25Josh Horowitz?

Oh, of course, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 9:26Speaker 00

In the movies it's made and so, of course, and seeing all these like really strong women, seeing Diane Keaton being really like so weird.

• 9:38Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 9:39Speaker 00

It made it be okay to be weird. And like, I don't know what the word is, flimsy or is that a word?

• 9:46Josh Horowitz?

It's a word, but it's not the right word.

• 9:49Speaker 00

  Someone used that.

• 9:50Josh Horowitz?

To get a half a point.

• 9:51Speaker 00

  Half a point.

• 9:53Josh Horowitz?

I wish all Americans, American women, American men were more like Diane Keaton and Annie Hall. Like, that's, that's like the, that's the, I would say kooky.

• 10:01Speaker 00

Kooky, quirky, that's the word I'm looking for.

• 10:03Josh Horowitz?

In the best possible way. We lost, we lost a unicorn in Diane Keaton.

• 10:07Speaker 00

I know, I know. She was very inspiring.

• 10:10Josh Horowitz?

You, you've talked a little bit about some of your, I've heard you talk about some of your influences or films and TV, et cetera, that made a, an impact on you.

• 10:17Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 10:18Josh Horowitz?

I've heard you mention Diane Keaton, I've heard you mention David Lynch, who was, I'm always happy to talk David Lynch, obsessed.

• 10:24Speaker 00

  Me too, obsessed.

• 10:25Josh Horowitz?

So it was, it was Mahal and Drive, it was Twin Peaks, it was going down that rabbit hole that kind of awakened something?

• 10:30Speaker 00

  Yeah, also like Empire.

• 10:33Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, Inland Empire.

• 10:34Speaker 00

  Yeah, Inland Empire.

• 10:35Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 10:35Speaker 00

Also, like, just like how it affected me in a way I couldn't really understand. And when I started watching it, I didn't know how a movie could have an effect. Like, what was the forces in structuring a movie to make someone feel something?

• 10:51Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 10:51Speaker 00

So I had no idea how I could feel that way by these images and the story in it. And, yeah, it just spoke to something I didn't.

• 11:01Josh Horowitz?

Did, did you have, did Lord of the Rings make a similar impact? Or was that, was that more of a Viggo Mortensen crush? Was that like?

• 11:08Speaker 00

I was actually, I didn't have a crush on him, I had a crush on Frodo.

• 11:13Josh Horowitz?

What? No one had a crush on Frodo.

• 11:15Speaker 00

  But he's, he was.

• 11:16Josh Horowitz?

  He's very sweet.

• 11:17Speaker 00

He's so sweet, and you know what? You know, he, he had no, it wasn't possible for him actually to do it, but he did it anyway.

• 11:27Josh Horowitz?

  It's an inspiring.

• 11:28Speaker 00

He had no talent, and he did it anyway. Well, well, he, he, in the end, it turned out, he, all his talents was the right ones.

• 11:36Josh Horowitz?

  There it is.

• 11:37Speaker 00

But I think that was what got to me.

• 11:39Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 11:39Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 11:39Josh Horowitz?

Was it the movies or the books that you?

• 11:41Speaker 00

I read the books first, but I think when I saw Lord of the Rings, it was actually just the craft of it. Like, it was so well made, and it was just such a big world.

• 11:55Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 11:55Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 11:56Josh Horowitz?

Would you like to be an elf, an orc, a dwarf? What do you want to be? I'm gonna make this happen for you.

• 12:03Speaker 00

  That's Ranger. I would be a Ranger.

• 12:05Josh Horowitz?

Okay, so you are kind of a Vigo.

• 12:06Speaker 00

  I'm in love with Frodo.

• 12:08Josh Horowitz?

  Wait a second.

• 12:09Speaker 00

  I'm a Ranger.

• 12:10Josh Horowitz?

Maybe kid Renata was in love with Frodo, but adult Renata gets the Vigo thing?

• 12:15Speaker 00

Yeah, I actually, I rewatched it not long ago.

• 12:18Josh Horowitz?

I don't know why I'm pushing you to this.

• 12:20Speaker 00

No, but it's true. It's true. You're absolutely right.

• 12:23Josh Horowitz?

  Right?

• 12:23Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 12:23Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 12:24Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 12:24Josh Horowitz?

He's also, I mean, have you met Vigo?

• 12:26Speaker 00

  I haven't, but he...

• 12:28Josh Horowitz?

  Class act in every way.

• 12:30Speaker 00

  Every way.

• 12:31Josh Horowitz?

  Right?

• 12:31Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 12:32Josh Horowitz?

What were we talking about? Okay, let's talk a little bit.

• 12:33Speaker 00

  I don't know.

• 12:35Josh Horowitz?

Let's talk a little bit about this amazing movie and this run that you guys have been on. It's been a long run since Cannes.

• 12:40Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 12:41Josh Horowitz?

Does this feel like a totally different experience then? Like, you had a bit of this with Worst Person, obviously, but it's a bit different in that, like, the focal point then was you and Joaquin. And part of the joy of this is you kind of get to share it with a bigger group.

• 12:53Speaker 00

It's really, really, it's been so nice. And it's, I feel it's so rare you get to travel with a lot of people and we all really love each other.

• 13:02Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 13:03Speaker 00

And also, like, all the, because everyone has, like, these teams of makeup and hair and reps. And they're all really lovely people. So it's been great. Yeah.

• 15:08Josh Horowitz?

Are you a fan of this movie? You like this movie, I take it?

• 15:12Speaker 00

  Sentimental, yeah.

• 15:13Josh Horowitz?

Separate yourself from it. This is like, not only are you in a movie that you enjoyed the process of, like, this is the kind of movie I have a feeling, if you weren't in, you would love.

• 15:21Speaker 00

Yes, I would. I'm very proud to be a part of it, because I would love it. It's also all like a movie that tries to talk about something dramatic and existential in a really subtle way, and kind of finds its way into your heart in a really slow way. You don't really understand how it got there. I feel that's the power of Joaquin's movies.

• 15:46Josh Horowitz?

The last time we did a Q and A, I did almost make you cry. I mean, it wasn't me. It's more about the subject matter of the film.

• 15:53Speaker 00

I remember what you said, I think. You said it's a movie about both how we connect to our family, but also the disconnections. And then I was, I was a little fragile that day.

• 16:06Josh Horowitz?

Well, I thought about this movie. We just had Thanksgiving. I really did think about this movie a lot with my family as I'm both connecting and arguing with them. And I had some arguments.

• 16:16Speaker 00

  Really?

• 16:17Josh Horowitz?

Yes. And we talked about this at one of our Q and As. Like, one of the things that really resonates with me, and I think with a lot of people, is like... The closeness of family members, the similarities

• 16:27Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 16:27Josh Horowitz?

that we share with some family members that lead to the most pain and strife. Does that resonate with you?

• 16:33Speaker 00

Yeah, it really does. It's incredible how you can know someone so well and be so similar and then you cannot communicate or you get into some kind of conflict that you don't really know what it is, but it's just there.

• 16:45Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 16:45Speaker 00

And you don't know how to resolve it. It's, yeah.

• 16:49Josh Horowitz?

By the nature of this process, as I've come to understand it, hearing you guys and Joakim talk about it, it is fascinating in that you all really do bring a lot of yourselves to the rehearsal.

• 16:59Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 16:59Josh Horowitz?

Um, is that, I mean, that's exposing, but it's also invigorating, I guess. I mean, you know the process by now, having worked with them a couple of times, but I don't know. What is that like for you as a human being and an actor to kind of like lay yourself bare in a rehearsal room?

• 17:13Speaker 00

I feel I get so much from Joakim because he, the way he dives into these themes.

• 17:19Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 17:20Speaker 00

Of, uh, yeah, family, connection, love, loneliness, shame. You, I feel that he never judges anyone in his script or his actors or anyone on set. So he, you're allowed to be all of it. And I think you slowly start to talk about the complexities of those themes and then it just really fills you from the inside, like the perspectives that we find together. And it's a real conversation with everyone. And then when we get on set, you kind of, you're charged with all of those things that you learned or you accepted in that process of rehearsing. So it's, it's really amazing.

• 18:01Speaker 00

And then it feels, it feels like you are sharing something with the whole crew when you're there on set. So you don't feel like, I don't feel it's me doing my part that I have to, um, kind of, uh, be perfect or do anything a specific way. It's just finding it together, the whole room right there. So it's a very, I, I never experienced it on any other movies like that.

• 18:25Josh Horowitz?

So if you were going to another producer or director and saying like, take a little bit of this from Joakim, here's some friendly, free advice.

• 18:33Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 18:33Josh Horowitz?

Like, what would you like to bleed into other experiences that Joakim does that, that you've found that other filmmakers aren't doing? Like, is there a practical, specific thing that he has employed that a lot of other people might want to think about?

• 18:46Speaker 00

I do, well, yes, that would be. Great, but I also really love going into the direction that the director wants to go, like his vision.

• 18:57Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 18:57Speaker 00

So, uh, and it's so personal to a director, how they make the whole set work, how they relate to the people around. So you can't really, um, learn that. And, and it's so, it's so much strength in what Yoo Kim does, but it's also great to have different experiences.

• 19:17Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 19:18Speaker 00

But I, I understand your questions and, uh, or your question. And I think, I think it's just to really, I don't know what Yoo Kim does. He has, he's gone through these themes in a really, um, I don't know, humble way and accepted so many things that are so chaotic in a human being. And I think his perspective and his kind of, um, how he leans into that is affecting the whole atmosphere. And we all fall into that.

• 19:53Josh Horowitz?

Well, he's also, from what I gather, and this should, this should be like just, everybody should do this, be connected to your filmmaker and vice versa.

• 20:02Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 20:03Josh Horowitz?

Like, you know, I've heard all the stories of like, and you've probably had experiences where there's a director that's twenty yards away in, in, you know, video village.

• 20:10Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 20:11Josh Horowitz?

And how can you possibly have any kind of human connection?

• 20:14Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 20:15Josh Horowitz?

The shot might look great, everything might look great.

• 20:17Speaker 00

Yeah, but you don't get, I, I also think you can have a shot that looks really beautiful and you can have some kind of emotion erupt. But if you don't have that layer of collectiveness and that you actually feel that it's happening on set and you're exploring something together, I don't think it translates the same way.

• 20:39Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 20:39Speaker 00

It doesn't hit the audience the same way. It's just, it looks beautiful.

• 20:44Josh Horowitz?

Which is fine, but it's not gonna have much of a shelf life. It's not gonna last or really.

• 20:49Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 20:50Josh Horowitz?

Um, okay, since we have the luxury of time, we're gonna do a little bit of a background.

• 20:54Speaker 00

  Mm-hmm, okay.

• 20:55Josh Horowitz?

You ready? This is where you start crying. No, no, no, no. Is there not a, a, a common name where you come from? Is it like?

• 21:01Speaker 00

  For grandmothers.

• 21:03Josh Horowitz?

  Really?

• 21:04Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 21:04Josh Horowitz?

  Were you named after anybody?

• 21:06Speaker 00

My mom thought this girl in Denmark was really cool, so she named me Renata.

• 21:11Josh Horowitz?

Do you feel like a Renata?

• 21:12Speaker 00

I never did, but I'm starting to feel more like it now, maybe because I'm becoming older.

• 21:18Josh Horowitz?

  Your grandmother years, very soon.

• 21:20Speaker 00

Yeah. I think in Germany it's more normal in Denmark, but Norway no.

• 21:25Josh Horowitz?

Give me the top two or three worst pronunciations you've ever heard of your full name. The ones that like, you must have had some doozies.

• 21:34Speaker 00

  Renati.

• 21:35Josh Horowitz?

  Renati.

• 21:36Speaker 00

  Renati.

• 21:36Josh Horowitz?

  Renati.

• 21:38Speaker 00

And, well, it's, they're kind of like, I, it's always the same, like, Renate.

• 21:46Josh Horowitz?

  Renate.

• 21:46Speaker 00

  Renata.

• 21:47Josh Horowitz?

And then there's the last name, let's not forget, let's not like, forget that.

• 21:50Speaker 00

  Yeah, that's been completely.

• 21:52Josh Horowitz?

Okay, so Renate, Rensveeze, Rens, R.

• 21:55Speaker 00

  Yeah. Rensveeze.

• 21:57Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, but that's the correct, that's, yeah, I know that.

• 21:59Speaker 00

It is, yeah, but almost no one in Norway, it's just my little family call, because my grandfather had to change his name because there was a thief in his village that had the same name as him, so he had to change it, and then the government just sent him a couple of names, and he was like, I'll take that one, Rensa. It's very unromantic.

• 22:18Josh Horowitz?

  No, it's, I think it's fascinating.

• 22:20Speaker 00

  It is fascinating.

• 22:21Josh Horowitz?

Wait, I have a photo I want to show you. So you posted this a couple of years ago on your Instagram. Is this an accurate representation of who Renata was as a child?

• 22:29Speaker 00

  Yeah, that's very accurate.

• 22:33Josh Horowitz?

What does that say? What is that? Tell me about that, that young woman.

• 22:37Speaker 00

I remember, my first memory is, I was sitting in a stroller, and someone was talking to me in this baby language, and I thought, like, why are you talking to me like that? Just talk to me like a normal person.

• 22:52Josh Horowitz?

Right, not an idiot, I'm a child, not an idiot.

• 22:57Speaker 00

And then I remember, maybe around that age, when I was like nine.

• 23:00Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 23:01Speaker 00

Something, I was like in class and I sat, I remember the moment I sat there with all these chairs and tables and all these kids and I was like, this is gonna ruin my creativity.

• 23:15Josh Horowitz?

This whole apparatus is, it's not, it's stifling me, it's not what I'm supposed to do.

• 23:18Speaker 00

This is gonna break me. Sitting still like this for ten more years.

• 23:24Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, it's absurd.

• 23:25Speaker 00

It is absurd. It really is.

• 23:27Josh Horowitz?

How do you wanna remake the system? What do you wanna?

• 23:28Speaker 00

You know, I, I heard about the school that really takes your, your interest into accountability when they kind of make your way through school.

• 23:38Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 23:38Speaker 00

And that was my last year, like in high school, and I started crying. Cause it's, that's kind of, I think, would be perfect.

• 23:46Josh Horowitz?

An individualized, kind of like following, cause everybody's different, everybody, you can't do a cookie cutter.

• 23:51Speaker 00

Right, and if you're interested in nature, you can go out in nature. If you are interested in butterflies, you can go and learn a lot about butterflies.

• 24:00Josh Horowitz?

To, to listen to you talk about your childhood, your teenage years, there is a narrative that you've constructed, or it's real, that you were kicked out of everything.

• 24:09Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 24:10Josh Horowitz?

So, let's, in brief, this is just a small sampling. Renata was kicked out of Girl Scouts.

• 24:17Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 24:18Josh Horowitz?

  Her home.

• 24:19Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 24:20Josh Horowitz?

  School?

• 24:20Speaker 00

Yes. And my family business, my family's business.

• 24:25Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 24:26Speaker 00

And then my first jobs, after I came home from, I ran away to Scotland for a year.

• 24:32Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 24:33Speaker 00

And then when I came back, I tried to work as other things than acting, and I was asked to leave.

• 24:40Josh Horowitz?

Okay, so let's backtrack for a second. Okay, so what was the most traumatizing of that quartet or quintet of being tossed out?

• 24:47Speaker 00

Well, I, I don't know, like in hindsight, it's not traumatic because it's empowered me in some ways. And if I had stayed in Girl Scouts, or I wouldn't have come where I am now.

• 24:59Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 25:00Speaker 00

So, it, it is. But I think, well, maybe like being asked to like it's time for you to move out a little early, that is probably the, that was the hardest one.

• 25:13Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 25:13Speaker 00

Cause I didn't really know how to take care of myself.

• 25:16Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 25:17Speaker 00

And that ended also up in me, cause I had to work to make my own money.

• 25:20Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 25:21Speaker 00

And then I didn't show up at school, cause I was, when you're a teenager, you have to sleep so much, you're so tired all the time.

• 25:29Josh Horowitz?

  I know.

• 25:29Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 25:30Josh Horowitz?

  It's true.

• 25:30Speaker 00

So I didn't come to school, I came to all like drama classes because I loved that, but all the other classes I didn't care about, so I didn't, never showed up.

• 25:39Josh Horowitz?

And, and part of it, you, you kind of alluded to this, I'm not gonna pry, but like you've kind of alluded to that like family like wasn't like the most stable, great thing growing up, so part of it sounds like who you were and part of it also was what home life was that you needed to get out of.

• 25:52Speaker 00

Yeah, it was, and it's not that it has, isn't anything specific and it's a lot of angles to what that was, you know, but yeah, for me, it felt like a chaotic, hard place.

• 26:05Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 26:06Speaker 00

So it was like kind of, but it felt like I would, I was going out and rebuilding myself.

• 26:12Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 26:12Speaker 00

  After.

• 26:13Josh Horowitz?

Well, we all move at different paces, like this might shock you.

• 26:16Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 26:17Josh Horowitz?

I was, I was kicked out of my school, my high school.

• 26:19Speaker 00

  Were you?

• 26:20Josh Horowitz?

  I was. So.

• 26:23Speaker 00

  Look at us now.

• 26:24Josh Horowitz?

Look at us now, we made it.

• 26:25Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 26:26Josh Horowitz?

But yeah, we're all sorting through shit and we're all working at our own pace. And on your track, I don't know, was there a period where you felt, it sounds like it was connected to acting, where you kind of felt like I found my tribe.

• 26:38Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 26:38Josh Horowitz?

This feels solid, this feels something, or I feel safe and happy in.

• 26:42Speaker 00

Yeah, and also like, also from when I was nine, I was very, I don't know if anyone told me, but I was very, I, I loved just creating a backstory to like charge how I would come onto stage, and my first role was a little fox, and I came onto the stage and like thinking about where I just were and, and like how I would be to this woman fox and like have, tried to make some layers to my presence on, but I didn't like being in front of audience, that wasn't my, I, I was very, very shy and I didn't, yeah, I was.

• 27:19Josh Horowitz?

So how would, how did that transition work, cause most of your early career was on stage in front of the audience, so.

• 27:24Speaker 00

But I loved the rehearsal and building a character and building the story within the. Like with other people, but then being onstage in front of an audience. The thing that I liked was that how different every performance would be.

• 27:43Speaker 00

Changing to who was in the audience.

• 27:45Josh Horowitz?

Right, that energy in the room.

• 27:46Speaker 00

It's like it becomes a unity when it's so, so that was nice.

• 27:50Josh Horowitz?

Did you, I mean, because for some actors, they're shutting out the audience. But I guess that's almost denying something, an advantage, like you want to connect in a way without getting lost.

• 28:02Speaker 00

Yeah, it's like this weird kind of balancing because you don't want to show off anything.

• 28:07Josh Horowitz?

You don't want to wait for the laugh, like, hey, like mug for them.

• 28:10Speaker 00

No, and you want to leave space for the audience. And then they have to kind of, you have to kind of feel what they're into that night.

• 28:19Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 28:19Speaker 00

Or, so it's like you, you're kind of working together with them in a way.

• 28:25Josh Horowitz?

So what are, so what ages are we talking about when you're like doing heavily into theater? And where are you? Is this in Oslo? Is this?

• 28:32Speaker 00

This is like a city outside the little village that I grew up in. Yeah, and so I drove there. My grandmother drove me there a lot and.

• 28:42Josh Horowitz?

What age are we talking about?

• 28:43Speaker 00

Like, I started when I was nine. That was after Girl Scouts, kick out. They recommended me starting theater, actually.

• 28:50Josh Horowitz?

  It was a mutual.

• 28:51Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 28:53Speaker 00

  Okay, sure, yeah.

• 28:54Josh Horowitz?

Okay, so The Fox at Nine, is it continual acting from then until now? Like, are you?

• 29:01Speaker 00

So, and I, I really just had so much fun and I loved that process so much. So when I was, when I was 14, someone, after a performance, someone came with a card. Or they gave me a card that someone had given to the reception in the theater. And they said, you should apply to theater school. And then I got the idea I could actually do this. And that someone thought that I was good.

• 29:26Josh Horowitz?

  Which is key.

• 29:27Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 29:28Josh Horowitz?

Actors need a space and someone to actually let you do your thing.

• 29:31Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 29:32Josh Horowitz?

So what, at what, what age, like, are there no side jobs? Are there no other options where it's like, I'm, I'm, I can say with confidence, I'm an actor. I'm a fully employed actor.

• 29:42Speaker 00

Um, well, I think that was after a theater school.

• 29:45Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 29:45Speaker 00

So I I was in that group in that little city for a while. I I like, me and my friend directed a couple of things and we played in some things. Uh, when we got paid, uh, we got paid for that. So, but it was still like for kids. We were still like, uh, uh, like seventeen, eighteen.

• 30:07Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 30:07Speaker 00

Yeah. And then, um, after I finished school, then I got employed to in a theater.

• 30:15Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 30:15Speaker 00

And I I was employed before I finished school. So then I had to like travel back and forth to a city.

• 30:21Josh Horowitz?

  Got it.

• 30:21Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 30:22Josh Horowitz?

And is there any ambition or interest at that point of like film, TV, America, you know, Hollywood? Like, what what are your ambitions in your early twenties?

• 30:33Speaker 00

So I really, really wanted to go into film. And at that point, I didn't want to kind of, um, well, it's it's weird, but I had this idea that I would be, I would get really good at what I did and not go into anything like be an it girl or be in a magazine or have like fancy clothes or do any kind of like, um, uh, like when you try to get to know people to find your, what is it called? Like your network.

• 31:04Josh Horowitz?

  Yes, yes.

• 31:05Speaker 00

  I just wanted to like.

• 31:07Josh Horowitz?

Do it on your own merits without.

• 31:08Speaker 00

Yeah. And now I know they belong together, like.

• 31:11Josh Horowitz?

  It's part of the thing.

• 31:12Speaker 00

  It really is.

• 31:13Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 31:13Speaker 00

Uh, but I I tried to like stay away to just like become the best I could.

• 31:19Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 31:19Speaker 00

  But then I also didn't.

• 31:21Josh Horowitz?

There's consequences to that. Wait, there's a reason why people are networking. You can wait, you can be very talented.

• 31:27Speaker 00

Yeah. And I I still believe you don't fully need to do it, but they belong together in a way.

• 31:33Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 31:41Speaker 05

Hey, it's Hillary Frank, host of The Longest Shortest Time, a women's health podcast for everyone. And exciting news, I've got a new original audiobook. It's called Wedlocked, and it's a thriller about the pressure on women to smile through pain. There's marital strife, gaslighting, gynecology, and creepy music, which is running under me right now. If you like thrillers with a social message, like Get Out, Promising Young Woman, then Wedlocked is for you. Get it now, wherever you buy audiobooks.

• 32:18Speaker 06

I'm Anne Foster, and I have never watched the show Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

• 32:21Speaker 07

And I'm Gina Berry, and I've watched this show numerous times.

• 32:26Speaker 06

On our new podcast, Nefertv, we discuss TV shows and movies set in ancient history. This season, we are discussing Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

• 32:34Speaker 07

Follow Nefertv, that's N-E-F-E-R TV, wherever you get your podcasts.

• 32:45Josh Horowitz?

So then, jumping way ahead, like, so worst person obviously changes everything.

• 32:50Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 32:51Josh Horowitz?

And you'd been doing it a while then. Like, again, you'd been doing theater for a while. You're not 20 years old, you're a woman that's like been doing it.

• 32:59Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 32:59Josh Horowitz?

How much of like a mindfuck in a good and bad way is that? Because it, again, like, you didn't ever go through that period of kind of like 22-year-old it girl. You kind of just like fully realized, like, we all were like, who is this woman? Where did she come from?

• 33:17Speaker 00

  Yeah, it was a shock.

• 33:20Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. Like, did you think that was ever gonna happen at that point?

• 33:22Speaker 00

No, never. And I thought when I was on the red carpet for our movie in Cannes, the premiere, I thought this is my first and last time on a red carpet. So I did a little twirl, and then I was like, this is, I have nothing to lose.

• 33:38Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 33:38Speaker 00

Because it's, and then, and then it started becoming more and more and more. But it's kind of this weird thing where you don't really notice that it's happening, and you know it's gonna go away at some point.

• 33:50Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 33:51Speaker 00

Or that's what I always thought. But now, here I am, like, five years later, and it's...

• 33:56Josh Horowitz?

  Not going away.

• 33:56Speaker 00

  No, and that's great.

• 33:58Josh Horowitz?

  Sorry.

• 34:00Speaker 00

That's great, but I really thought that in the beginning. So I was just like taking it in and really appreciating everything that happened. I also felt that with the character Julie, it was the first time, because in theater you build a character and you go on stage and you have to project a lot more and make it to the back row.

• 34:21Josh Horowitz?

  Yes.

• 34:22Speaker 00

And here I was asked to be a lot more open and kind of raw in what would just occur in the moment.

• 34:30Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 34:31Speaker 00

So I kind of learned a new way of acting also through Yuakim.

• 34:34Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 34:35Speaker 00

That I really loved, but it was very scary and I felt very exposed.

• 34:41Josh Horowitz?

  Of course, yeah, yeah.

• 34:42Speaker 00

But to have that meeting with the audience that felt so seen and felt so with that character, it was such a great feeling.

• 34:52Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, such a high. And then I'm fascinated by those pivot points in someone's career because that's a pivot point and then suddenly there are opportunities that you probably never even imagined you'd have.

• 35:03Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 35:04Josh Horowitz?

When you look back at kind of the couple of years after that and the opportunities that came, I don't know, was there a distinct plan? Was there a distinct idea of like the kind of things that I could or should do?

• 35:15Speaker 00

Well, I just knew that I wanted to do things where I felt some kind of, I don't know, you know that feeling when you know something is right?

• 35:25Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 35:25Speaker 00

So I never saw it from the outside. I was like, maybe this is, this was it and that's okay.

• 35:30Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 35:30Speaker 00

And then I had some scripts that I didn't feel was, yeah, didn't give me that feeling. And then Different Man came. And then I was like, oh, this is Charlie Kaufman. This is like something. And it just moved me, that the whole theme of like, what is beauty? And like how, who runs this world in a way? So, yeah, I, I, that was the first thing I did afterwards, Person.

• 36:01Josh Horowitz?

I love that movie. And that's like, that was a passion project. I spoke to Sebastian about it last year. And Sebastian's a gem, as you know, you've worked with him since.

• 36:08Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 36:08Josh Horowitz?

So how did you connect with Sebastian? Because this is, this is a guy, that's a good example of someone that's had the different kind of a career, right? Like he's like walked the Marvel path and has used that. That collateral to get things like A Different Man Made and The Apprentice, et cetera.

• 36:24Speaker 00

  Right, yeah.

• 36:26Josh Horowitz?

I don't know, what struck you about working with him? Why have you guys vibed, do you think, or how have you guys vibed?

• 36:31Speaker 00

I was so scared. It was my first time speaking English in any role. And I was, he was just very, very warm and helpful and took me in. So I felt safe, him really like being there for me, being in a new, being new in the American movies. And also Adam Pearson was also very supportive and we were both a little bit scared. So we were like all huddling together and it felt like a really small indie movie. So it was a warm atmosphere on set.

• 37:10Josh Horowitz?

We shot that here, didn't you?

• 37:11Speaker 00

  Yeah, yeah, I did.

• 37:13Josh Horowitz?

And you've since shot another film with Sebastian.

• 37:16Speaker 00

We shot Fjord this spring. It's not out yet. It's in the edit. And that was so nice because that was a really, really difficult movie to do. Everything's, it's in total, what do you say that in, like everything is in.

• 37:35Josh Horowitz?

Like one shot, like can it be shots or no?

• 37:38Speaker 00

Far Away. So Christian Manjoo, he is an amazing filmmaker. And he wants to take away as much manipulation as he can from, from movies. So no music, you're not, you're not leading with any emotion. And, and he also films Far Away to get a perspective from, but the poetry in his movies is kind of the misanthrope. Like how the actor moves.

• 38:04Speaker 00

But it was so hard and we were so happy to have each other. He's so nice, he's such a nice person and it's so. Yeah, it's important to have those people around.

• 38:16Josh Horowitz?

Did he try to sell you on Marvel? Did that ever come up in casual conversation? Because it sounds like from all the conversations I've heard you have, you're just not that person, which is totally fine.

• 38:26Speaker 00

Yeah, I don't have anything against it. And I respect that, but I don't think I could do it.

• 38:34Josh Horowitz?

So if we're talking in five years and you're like, "By the way, Josh, I've got Captain Marvel 3 coming out." Will something have gone terribly wrong? Or have you sold out? What happened?

• 38:43Speaker 00

  It can't happen.

• 38:45Josh Horowitz?

  It can't happen.

• 38:46Speaker 00

No, it won't happen. I remember, yeah, no, it has come up in casual conversation. I just don't, I don't think I've told them.

• 38:56Josh Horowitz?

You know yourself enough that that's not you.

• 38:59Speaker 00

  No.

• 39:00Josh Horowitz?

  Right?

• 39:00Speaker 00

And I'm so in love with indie movies. And you only have this much time. So I want to, I've been so lucky to work with so many amazing directors.

• 39:12Josh Horowitz?

But have you found yourself like in meetings with studios or filmmakers, like in the wake of this, where like, "How did I get here? Like, I'm wasting their time. Like, I don't want to, I'm not the person for this."

• 39:24Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 39:24Josh Horowitz?

  Right?

• 39:25Speaker 00

Yeah, and I was put in some meetings like right afterwards personally, and I said, "I don't think it's necessary." Because I feel that the way I come into a project is if a director has seen me do this role or they want me in it, that it's part of their vision. Then you feel like it's kind of organic. Or you meet someone and you feel, "Oh, we have kind of the same themes we want to talk about and explore." And then you find something together from that.

• 39:58Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 39:58Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 39:58Josh Horowitz?

Again, you've been spoiled by the Yo-Kim tree or experience, and I get it.

• 40:01Speaker 00

  Yeah, so spoiled.

• 40:04Josh Horowitz?

I was talking to Elle, I mean, part of the joys about this process, like these months of like award shows and all the fun silliness, is like you do interact with these other amazing people. Like, these could lead to other conversations. Like, you're in a room with Chloe Zhao.

• 40:18Speaker 00

Yeah, absolutely. And also, but I think it...

• 40:25Speaker 00

I don't like using it and I don't think directors also like when you use it for that. I think everyone's just, okay, we're in the same place. It's a little overwhelming. We're trying to promote movies and we are very proud, but it's, sometimes it happens. But it's, it needs to be kind of organic.

• 40:42Josh Horowitz?

I do think, I'm thinking now when I mentioned Chloe, I think she cast Hamnet because she saw, she met Jesse and Paul at a previous Telluride.

• 40:50Speaker 00

  Oh, really?

• 40:51Josh Horowitz?

So these things can weird, have that trickle down thing.

• 40:53Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 40:54Josh Horowitz?

Does, does, have you ever broken bread with Chalamet since you name checked him as an inspiration for your worst person role?

• 41:00Speaker 00

  Never met him.

• 41:01Josh Horowitz?

That's true, right? Like, his Ilio did inspire you a little bit?

• 41:05Speaker 00

I felt it was so light and kind of like emotional in a same. I, I wanted it to feel light but go deep as well and I saw that in that character. Kind of that and Diane Keaton, a little bit, a mix of that. Not that it's like anything very specific, but it was just like a, like a feeling to it.

• 41:25Josh Horowitz?

Which Chalamet character inspired Nora? Is there some Bob Dylan in there or is there?

• 41:33Speaker 00

  That would be funny.

• 41:37Josh Horowitz?

Okay, so coming up, oh wait, are you gonna be working with Alexander Payne?

• 41:40Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 41:41Josh Horowitz?

  That's really cool.

• 41:42Speaker 00

Yeah, and I haven't met him yet. We're gonna meet in Norway in December.

• 41:45Josh Horowitz?

  You're gonna like him.

• 41:46Speaker 00

Very excited, yeah, everyone says he's the, yeah, the best guy.

• 41:49Josh Horowitz?

He's a Nebraska, like he's a Nebraska boy. He's, and you're shooting that in, you're gonna shoot that at home, like in Norway?

• 41:55Speaker 00

  In Denmark, so very close.

• 41:57Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So wait, you haven't even met him, this has just been like conversations over Zoom? Have you read a script? I assume you have.

• 42:03Speaker 00

  Not even Zoom, like email.

• 42:05Josh Horowitz?

Oh my gosh, old school, like handwritten letters.

• 42:10Josh Horowitz?

But there's a script, there's like, can you say anything about?

• 42:13Speaker 00

Yeah, I, I read the script, yeah. It's very moving, beautiful.

• 42:16Josh Horowitz?

  Okay, okay.

• 42:17Speaker 00

Very him, I feel, very him.

• 42:21Josh Horowitz?

I won't say the genre of film that you said you're probably never gonna be in before the cameras rolled, but like, what kind of?

• 42:29Josh Horowitz?

I don't know why I said that, but I don't wanna, I don't wanna ruin your opportunities, but are there, I mean? Is there a specific kind of experience you're looking for that you haven't had yet? You alluded to that kind of connection, that collaborative give and take with Yoakim.

• 42:47Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 42:48Josh Horowitz?

But I don't know, is there, I don't know, what are you lacking for right now that you're?

• 42:52Speaker 00

I feel like for the characters, I've been so lucky, I've done so many things. I don't feel I'm lacking anything, but I, of course, to kind of work in the same way, where I can find something with a director and really, I love just going into someone's world and try to like compliment or kind of contrast or, that's kind of what I love to do. But I'm also very curious about the editing process. So I'm trying to let someone, let me into the editing process.

• 43:28Josh Horowitz?

  That's dangerous.

• 43:29Speaker 00

It is. So you have to like put all your ego aside and be prepared to like look bad. But I think it would be really interesting. I think I would learn a lot. To kind of like how to give different versions of a scene.

• 43:46Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 43:48Speaker 00

How they could use it kind of, because it, I think if you can create a real moment, a director or like Yoakim, he will always find a way to use it in the edit. So to build around that real moment, like in Sentimental Value, that moment between the sisters. It was a really real moment that happened and the whole room kind of improvised together. And then that scene was so important and then kind of structures those scenes around that. I'm just, I don't know how much I would get out of it, other than being really curious about that process.

• 44:24Josh Horowitz?

You might be a changed person.

• 44:26Speaker 00

  Maybe.

• 44:27Josh Horowitz?

  Hopefully for the better.

• 44:28Speaker 00

  Hopefully.

• 44:29Josh Horowitz?

Are you at all interested in going back to the stage, whether it's back home or here in the States?

• 44:35Speaker 00

Well, now I'm so in love with movies and I'm like going that direction and, but I think I will go back to the stage at some point, but in a while, I think.

• 44:45Josh Horowitz?

Right now, the opportunities are good, I get it. Okay, so your first time on the podcast, we end Every Happy Second Fuse with the profoundly random questions. Nada, you ready?

• 44:55Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 44:56Josh Horowitz?

  Okay. Dogs or cats?

• 44:58Speaker 00

  Cats.

• 44:59Josh Horowitz?

This is great, I'm happy, but it's a, we're in a dog world. You're living in a dog world, just so you know.

• 45:06Speaker 00

  Yeah, I know.

• 45:09Josh Horowitz?

  Do you own any cats?

• 45:10Speaker 00

Yeah. My son just got a kitten. An orange one.

• 45:15Josh Horowitz?

An orange kitten, Garfield, what's the name, what's the?

• 45:18Speaker 00

  Uh, it's Samuel.

• 45:19Josh Horowitz?

  Samuel.

• 45:19Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 45:20Josh Horowitz?

  Very mature.

• 45:21Speaker 00

Either like a Pokemon name or Samuel.

• 45:23Josh Horowitz?

Those are the two options at this point.

• 45:24Speaker 00

Yeah, I was like, let's do Samuel.

• 45:28Josh Horowitz?

  Um, what do you collect?

• 45:31Speaker 00

What do I collect? I... I actually like to like bring, uh, like if I've been on vacation, like a little stone or like something to remember it by.

• 45:45Josh Horowitz?

  Perfect.

• 45:45Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 45:46Josh Horowitz?

Um, do you have a favorite video game of all time? Did you ever play video games as a kid?

• 45:49Speaker 00

I, I, I have, but I don't remember what it was called. It's, uh, I love the narrative, like indie games.

• 45:59Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 45:59Speaker 00

But I haven't played a lot, but that's kind of what I, yeah.

• 46:02Josh Horowitz?

Okay. You'll be in the new Minecraft movie, I can't wait to see you in that, Minecraft 4.

• 46:09Josh Horowitz?

What's the wallpaper on your phone?

• 46:11Speaker 00

  My son.

• 46:13Josh Horowitz?

Last actor you were mistaken for?

• 46:17Speaker 00

  Um... Oh, Al, actually.

• 46:21Josh Horowitz?

  Really?

• 46:22Speaker 00

Someone handed me like a poster to sign, like.

• 46:27Josh Horowitz?

Close-ish, but no. Um, what's the worst noted director has ever given you?

• 46:34Speaker 00

Um, I think like Do It Better. Like, no, no.

• 46:39Josh Horowitz?

Makes you want to do it worse.

• 46:40Speaker 00

There was one director in theater and he, uh, he liked to have control and he would like deliberately call me Rebecca through the whole thing.

• 46:52Josh Horowitz?

  Was that your character name?

• 46:53Speaker 00

  No.

• 46:56Josh Horowitz?

  Makes sense.

• 46:58Speaker 00

It was, I just had to laugh. It's like so obvious.

• 47:01Josh Horowitz?

  What a lame power move.

• 47:02Speaker 00

Yeah, it is. I don't like those power moves.

• 47:06Josh Horowitz?

  All right, Rebecca.

• 47:08Speaker 00

  Rebecca, move.

• 47:11Josh Horowitz?

If you just laugh, that kind of can ruin the power right there.

• 47:14Speaker 00

  Yeah, yeah.

• 47:14Josh Horowitz?

In the spirit of Happy Second Fuse, an actor who always makes you happy. You see them on screen, you're immediately in a better mood.

• 47:20Speaker 00

  Jessie Buckley. She's so good.

• 47:23Josh Horowitz?

  She's the real deal.

• 47:24Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 47:25Josh Horowitz?

A movie that makes you sad?

• 47:31Speaker 00

A movie that makes me sad? Well, now I'm thinking about Hamlet because I just said Jessie Buckley and that made me really sad.

• 47:38Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 47:38Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 47:39Josh Horowitz?

If it didn't, you would not be a human being.

• 47:41Speaker 00

  Yeah. Yeah, that's true.

• 47:44Josh Horowitz?

And finally, a food that makes you confused?

• 47:50Speaker 00

Well, Norwegian food is actually listed like the worst food in the world. But I...

• 47:58Josh Horowitz?

But you defend it, don't you?

• 48:00Speaker 00

I like it. But it's just because I'm used to it.

• 48:04Josh Horowitz?

What's a delicacy that isn't appreciated here that I should try?

• 48:07Speaker 00

So because of the cold from old times, everything needed to be preserved really well with a lot of salt. So we have like really, really salty meat and some potatoes.

• 48:18Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 48:19Speaker 00

  That's, that's it.

• 48:20Josh Horowitz?

Salty meat and potatoes. Delicious. Are there any disgusting American delicacies you've discovered recently?

• 48:27Speaker 00

Well, I walked past this like corn dog thing. I didn't taste it, but it didn't... And I heard about it. Do you like it?

• 48:35Josh Horowitz?

  No.

• 48:35Speaker 00

  Okay. What is it?

• 48:37Josh Horowitz?

It's like a hot dog with like a corn meal coating. We like to deep fry things. Have you done like the theme parks? Have you ever been to like a Disneyland, a Disney World?

• 48:47Speaker 00

  I went to Universal.

• 48:49Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 48:49Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 48:50Josh Horowitz?

  How was that?

• 48:50Speaker 00

It was very rainy that day.

• 48:55Speaker 00

So we're like running from place to place, but no, it was fun. It's like, it's massive.

• 49:00Josh Horowitz?

  It's a lot.

• 49:01Speaker 00

Like, there is no place like that in Norway.

• 49:03Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. Well, I can't wait for the sentimental value theme park ride. What would that be?

• 49:07Speaker 00

That would be, that would be so complex. That would be like, here is the father.

• 49:13Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 49:14Speaker 00

Here is, you're playing the daughter.

• 49:16Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 49:16Speaker 00

And this is the ride and you love him. But you also like, you have resentment, but only these things.

• 49:24Josh Horowitz?

It's a very handy ride. I just like the idea of Stellan Skarsgård popping out.

• 49:28Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 49:30Josh Horowitz?

  Good stuff, Ford.

• 49:32Josh Horowitz?

Congratulations on the film. You know, I adore this film. Your performance is fantastic. I'm so happy this film exists because I've gotten to know you the last few months and I really enjoyed it. And I'm sure I'll see you in like six hours of the next thing.

• 49:45Speaker 00

  Oh, yeah.

• 49:45Josh Horowitz?

  I know I will.

• 49:46Speaker 00

Are you going to the Gotham Awards?

• 49:47Josh Horowitz?

  So I'm sorry in advance.

• 49:49Speaker 00

  No, I'll see you there.

• 49:50Josh Horowitz?

We did it, though. You've been podcasted. How did it feel?

• 49:53Speaker 00

Great. Did I, did I do okay?

• 49:56Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 49:57Speaker 00

  Yeah?

• 49:57Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah. You'll be back.

• 49:59Speaker 00

  Great.

• 50:02Josh Horowitz?

  Appreciate you.

• 50:04Speaker 02

And so ends another edition of Happy, Sad, Confused. Remember to review, rate and subscribe to this show on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm a big podcast person. I'm Daisy Ridley and I definitely wasn't supposed to do this by Josh.

• 50:23Speaker 08

There are vampires out there. They walk among you, shoulder to shoulder, in the dark. Heading to work, heading home, going to the bar. It's a life just like anyone else's and I have grown used to it. To the darkness, to the moon, to the taste of blood on my tongue. But vampires are dying out. We are a fading kind and I am the first one created in so long. And that is a dangerous thing to be. Those who came before me, elders of all stripes, they do not want to see our kind gone. And they will do anything to keep their power. And for myself and for Grace who created me, that is a sword that hangs above our heads. And the worst person of all carries our secret. And he will use it however he sees fit.

• 51:07Speaker 08
