Will Arnett, Vol. II

We all know Will Arnett as one of the funniest and sharpest talents from his comedies (ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT) and podcasting juggernaut (SMARTLESS) but with IS THIS THING ON?, he's showing off his dramatic side and earning the best reviews of his career. He joins Josh to talk about returning to his dramatic roots, what he considers peak ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, and how many fellow Batmen he could beat up. Do you think he resents that you're Batman? And he's Jor-El? That's not, I mean, that's like a, that's like second tier. That's not even a superhero. I think, I don't know, dude. You tell me. Did my demeanor just shift? Well, your body language did, and your voice changed. What way?

• 0:48Speaker 02

Prepare your ears, humans. Happy, sad, confused begins now.

• 0:56Josh Horowitz?

Hey, guys, it's Josh. Welcome to another edition of Happy, Sad, Confused. Today on the show, it is Will Arnett, from Arrested Development and BoJack Horseman to Smartless. And now, Is This Thing On?, an amazing new film with a fantastic, dramatic turn from Will. Hey, guys, thanks as always for joining me on the podcast. I appreciate all of you tuning in. However, you're enjoying the podcast, whether it's on Spotify, or YouTube, or whatever podcast platform you use. We are careening towards the end of 2025. I have to say, the best year, I think, yet. Objectively speaking of Happy, Sad, Confused, in terms of the guests we've had on, certainly in terms of the audience reception, just sheer numbers. It's been a really rewarding year. So, starting to take stock in everything that was 2025. And we're, we're not done yet.

• 1:41Josh Horowitz?

We've got some really cool episodes to come, including this one with Will Arnett. I mentioned a few of his credits. You, you know what Will Arnett is capable of. Or maybe you didn't. Maybe you didn't know he was capable of this dramatic turn in this new film he is starring in. Is This Thing On? This is a collaboration between him, Bradley Cooper, behind the camera. And it's a very... Um, it's a dramatic, funny, relatable, um, great piece of drama that I highly, highly recommend. I mean, Bradley Cooper, uh, doesn't choose his projects lightly, certainly as a filmmaker especially. And this is yet another, as I say in the interview with Will, uh, kind

• 2:22Josh Horowitz?

of an excavation of a relationship. Uh, Will plays a guy, something at a crossroads in his relationship. He's separating from his wife, played from, played by the great Laura Dern, and finds, um, a catharsis, a way of emoting, a way of coping in the form of stand-up comedy, something he had never done before. This is based on a true story. It's fascinating. And Will's getting the best reviews of his life and justifiably so. So a great occasion to have Will on the podcast. Before I get to more on Will Arnett, I do want to remind folks, as always, uh, check out our Patreon, patreon.com/happy, sad, confused. You know the drill. You've heard me say it, but I'm going to say it again because, uh, we've been doing a lot of cool stuff, whether it's live stuff, uh, giveaways

• 3:06Josh Horowitz?

with autographed merch, all that, uh, cool, fun stuff is over at patreon.com/happy, sad, confused. It's a better time than ever to sign up over there, as I always say, and I mean it. If you support us over there, it just makes us, helps us make more stuff over here. Um, okay. Not much more preamble for Will. As I said, you know what he's done, what he's capable of. What you should know is that I've known Will for a long, long time, and I've always had a fascinating, fun dynamic with him. I think it's based on mutual respect and admiration. I hope so. I think so. I know so. I do absolutely think he is, uh, one of the smartest, funniest guys I know, full stop. Um, and I think he likes what I do. I hope. We had a really fun time before this podcast, about a month

• 3:51Josh Horowitz?

or so ago, at least maybe two months, uh, at the Savannah Film Festival, where I hosted an event with him in support of this film. And, uh, we referenced that in this conversation. And, um, yeah, I've just known him forever. And we've always had kind of like a weird, passive aggressive, um, antagonistic vibe, but it is, it is based on respect. And I truly do think he is, um, so, so damn talented and just fun to Talk to, I mean, he's so quick. And it's really exciting to see him shine in a role like this. And to see folks kind of not rediscover, because everybody's known Will is a great actor. But to see him in a different light collaborating with Bradley Cooper on something dramatic.

• 4:32Josh Horowitz?

And not to say there isn't comedy in this, is this thing on, but I've seen it a few times and I really, it's one of my favorites of the year. It's out in theaters December 19th, Friday, December 19th. So put it on your to do list this holiday season.

• 4:46Josh Horowitz?

Just a great piece of like adult storytelling, right? So that's my spiel. I hope you guys enjoyed this episode. Without any further ado, here's me catching up with the one and only Will Arnett.

• 4:59Josh Horowitz?

  Hi, Will.

• 4:59Speaker 04

  Hi, Josh. How are you?

• 5:01Josh Horowitz?

I didn't see you there. You dropped right into.

• 5:03Speaker 04

  How are you doing?

• 5:04Josh Horowitz?

I'm doing great. Are we pretending to like each other today?

• 5:06Speaker 04

I'm trying to reestablish, I'm trying to reset the, yeah.

• 5:10Josh Horowitz?

Will Arnett, actor, podcaster, sometime mortal enemy of mine. I feel like there was a phase many years ago where we had some feud. I don't even know what it was based on.

• 5:21Speaker 04

I don't either. But it developed, it grew.

• 5:25Josh Horowitz?

  Festered like a boil.

• 5:26Speaker 04

It really did. And we were, we were legitimate nemesis.

• 5:30Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. Do you have any actual nemesis? I'm not a real, you, you enjoy my, me, I enjoy you.

• 5:37Speaker 04

  Do I enjoy you?

• 5:39Josh Horowitz?

What happened to your voice just now?

• 5:40Speaker 04

Did it seem higher? Because it did to me too.

• 5:44Speaker 04

I do enjoy you, Josh. Do I have an actual nemesis? I think I've had a few. I think not, not really, but.

• 5:52Josh Horowitz?

Did you have a rival back in the day? You're auditioning, you're hoofing it. Did you, who was the actor when you walked into the audition room? Wow, that, that, this fucker's gonna get, it's gonna be him again.

• 6:02Speaker 04

  Thoreau.

• 6:03Josh Horowitz?

  Seriously?

• 6:04Speaker 04

You could see Thoreau's name on the signing sheet back in the nineties. You're like, this frickin' guy.

• 6:09Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 6:09Speaker 04

  Yeah, I mean.

• 6:10Josh Horowitz?

Was he wearing sleeves back then? Was, what was his?

• 6:13Speaker 04

  He's never, he's never had a sleeve.

• 6:16Josh Horowitz?

Breaking news today, he's gonna be a dad.

• 6:19Speaker 04

  He's gonna be a dad.

• 6:21Josh Horowitz?

  He's got a layoff. He's got a handful coming.

• 6:24Speaker 04

  Or double down.

• 6:25Josh Horowitz?

  Double down.

• 6:29Josh Horowitz?

Okay, we're spreading the good word today. You know, I love this film. This performance is excellent. I have to say that sadly, but I mean it, I really do.

• 6:36Speaker 04

Thank you. Thank you. I know what it pains you.

• 6:38Josh Horowitz?

It has pained me. The last time we saw each other was at the Savannah Film Festival.

• 6:41Speaker 04

Yeah, it was a very enjoyable time down there.

• 6:43Josh Horowitz?

It was a lot of fun.

• 6:44Speaker 04

  It was.

• 6:45Josh Horowitz?

Where's the award? Do you have like a?

• 6:48Speaker 04

  You know, it's funny, I don't know.

• 6:51Speaker 04

And by that, I mean, they gave me an award, but nobody ever said, here, this is like, they gave it to me on stage. Then it kind of went somewhere else and I left and I didn't leave with the award and that's, somebody needs to look into that.

• 7:03Josh Horowitz?

There was nobody. You're pointing at nothing.

• 7:05Speaker 04

  Somebody's on it.

• 7:06Josh Horowitz?

What's your, what's your relationship with awards? I was thinking, when I was thinking about awards and you, I was thinking about Arrested and I remember, correct me if I'm wrong, back in the day, you guys won an award, like the big, the Emmy Award.

• 7:16Speaker 04

Yeah, for the best comedy, yeah.

• 7:18Josh Horowitz?

Like, that was after the first season when we weren't even sure if Arrested was continuing or not. Do you remember that as being a very strange?

• 7:24Speaker 04

Do I ever? I remember we won best comedy.

• 7:28Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 7:29Speaker 04

And then at the Fox lot, I remember driving on a couple of days later and they put up a banner.

• 7:38Speaker 04

But it was behind this kind of, this thing, this gate that you drive through. So you could only see it for a nanosecond because it was, there's the gate and then the banner was here. So you were like, as you drive by, you could just see. And it was just kind of written like, congrats. And then they sent over an ice cream cart. Not a truck. A cart.

• 7:58Josh Horowitz?

What's the difference? It's just like, oh, it's like a small.

• 8:00Speaker 04

It's like one of those, like a little cart with a, hey, you want a, you want one of these? You want a King Cone? What are you, what are you guys having? A chipwich? It was one of those. That's what we got.

• 8:10Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. Married with Children gets the full truck.

• 8:13Speaker 04

The full, I mean, yeah, so we were, I don't know, I've never, my, my relationship with awards is, is, I'd say fleeting at best.

• 8:23Speaker 04

Um, I haven't been around a lot of it, but we did that. I remember that was a great. For us, it felt very validating.

• 8:30Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 8:30Speaker 04

To win the, the Emmy. Yeah, the show won best writing, best directing and like, you know, a lot of stuff. Yeah.

• 8:37Josh Horowitz?

Can we, can we pull the veil back on one of my favorite moments in recent memory at the Savannah Film Festival? A moment we had backstage that we then brought onstage. Do you remember what I'm talking about?

• 8:46Speaker 04

  Yeah, it was, um.

• 8:48Josh Horowitz?

I think I'm gonna connect it to this movie in a way. Watch Me Be a Professional.

• 8:52Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 8:52Josh Horowitz?

But we're backstage. It's kind of a This Is Your Life sizzle reel for Will Arnett. Rapturous applause to every, um, every significant moment. Arrested Development.

• 9:02Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 9:02Josh Horowitz?

  Huge applause.

• 9:03Speaker 04

  Huge.

• 9:04Josh Horowitz?

  BoJack, huge applause.

• 9:05Speaker 04

They loved it. And then flaked. And it was silent.

• 9:12Josh Horowitz?

And in that moment, I feel like sums up showbiz right there. The highs and the lows, the absurdity, all of it.

• 9:18Speaker 04

To my credit, I laughed harder than you did.

• 9:21Josh Horowitz?

  You did.

• 9:22Speaker 04

  I thought it was hilarious.

• 9:23Josh Horowitz?

  You did.

• 9:25Speaker 04

Yeah, I mean, all that sort of stuff. It's, it's, it's all stuff that now at my age, uh, that I, I,

• 9:34Speaker 04

it's got nothing to do with me in a lot of ways. There's nothing I can do about it. There's nothing. And it's not something that I think about or, or like, certainly I'm not going for. I mean, if I was going for it, boy, I've set myself up for a lot of disappointment, you know? Yeah, it's just, it's just such a funny thing.

• 9:54Josh Horowitz?

But there must be something freeing at your ripe old age of seven, 72.

• 9:59Speaker 04

How old are you, for real?

• 10:01Josh Horowitz?

  I'm 49.

• 10:01Speaker 04

  Yeah, I'm 48.

• 10:03Josh Horowitz?

Interesting how that works. What year were you born again?

• 10:07Speaker 04

  The year right after you.

• 10:11Josh Horowitz?

There must be something freeing at your old age, very advanced age.

• 10:14Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 10:14Josh Horowitz?

See, I'm, I'm, I'm being an asshole, but I'm being real. Like, the letting go of some of that, like,

• 10:20Speaker 04

  The best.

• 10:21Josh Horowitz?

Of that, all that shit that you were wrapped up in because of the business you were in, or any of us are in, in our twenties and thirties, and to a degree in our forties. And hopefully, we start to let it go by our forties.

• 10:30Speaker 04

Honestly, it's the best. I don't, I, my measure of success, and I've actually kind of talked about it a few times over the last couple of years on our, on our podcast. I'm on an award-winning podcast.

• 10:41Josh Horowitz?

Which, you have a podcast now. Congrats. The Joe Rogan Show, is that you?

• 10:45Speaker 04

You need to Google me. I honestly, I keep telling you this. Please, just Google.

• 10:49Josh Horowitz?

No, I don't have internet privileges.

• 10:50Speaker 04

No, you don't, because you, you think that the internet's not real. It is. I, um, I don't measure, my, my measure for success has completely shifted.

• 11:03Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 11:04Speaker 04

And my measure for success is, am I happy in my life? And, and not associated with my professional life in that way. It's, it's being happy, spending time with my kids, being at home, all that kind of stuff. Like, those are the things, my friends, the people who are important to me, my sort of, my support group, and all the people, that's, when all that is good, everything else is just gravy.

• 11:29Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 11:31Speaker 04

So, yeah, so I, you know, and even going in and doing this film, I did it because, you know, I've had people say like, oh, did you want people to see you in a different light? Do you, you're trying to do all, I was like, not really. It wasn't, I, I heard a story, this guy, John Bishop, tells me his life story. And I'm like, wow, that's really interesting. And he got relief from doing this thing. And it brought him closer to himself and his ex-wife. And they kind of started talking, all these elements that I liked. And every step of the way, Mark Chappell responded to that, and it was why we decided to start writing it. Bradley responded to that, that's why he, he came on, wanted to rewrite it and work with us and direct it. When Laura came on, never with the intention of, of how it would be received.

• 12:14Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 12:15Speaker 04

What people would think, it was because we wanted to do it, because we liked it. I was just happy that we were potentially getting it made.

• 12:23Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 12:23Speaker 04

That, to me, was the victory.

• 12:27Speaker 04

  How people took it was...

• 12:31Speaker 04

Truly secondary. Now, not to say it's not rewarding when people come out of it and watch it and experience it and say, hey, I really liked it.

• 12:41Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 12:42Speaker 04

It, it, that, that movie, you know, it really resonated with me. I, I really identified with that character. I really identified with that sentiment, with that emotion, where they're at and what they're talking about. Of course, that's very gratifying, but, but first it started with us. It's kind of weirdly selfish, as that sounds.

• 12:59Josh Horowitz?

No, I mean, the best of intentions, that sets you up for success also and, and also frees you up, I'm sure, on set. So you're not thinking about the end result. You're just enjoying the process.

• 13:07Speaker 04

Yeah, I never think about like, how's this thing gonna play?

• 13:10Josh Horowitz?

Right. Well, because, because, I mean, you're a smart guy. You know what this press tour was gonna be like and indeed has become, which is everybody asking you.

• 13:18Speaker 04

I really, I really did it. I'm not that smart.

• 13:24Josh Horowitz?

Well, you put it out of your mind, I guess, because, because, because I'm sure you're sick to a degree of having that conversation like, can you, but like, everyone's shocked that you have this in you.

• 13:33Speaker 04

Well, no. You mean the backhand compliment? Of course, you were about to say it. I did say that once to somebody recently. I was like, sometimes it feels like a backhand compliment. And yet, again, that's another one of those things. I'm not as cynical as I used to be.

• 13:48Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 13:48Speaker 04

I don't think, and maybe that's just comes with, with age. And so when somebody says that, I, I get what they mean.

• 13:54Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 13:54Speaker 04

Of course. And, and for them, they don't know me. They don't spend every day with me. So they're, they're like, I've never seen you do this. They legit just mean that.

• 14:04Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 14:04Speaker 04

And that's okay. And, and, and, but, but again, it is something like, it never came from a place of something, uh, I, I always thought I could do something like this. This is kind of the things that I,

• 14:20Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 14:20Speaker 04

that I always wanted to do. Laura and I were talking about it earlier today.

• 14:25Speaker 04

When we were making the movie, every, every element, every step of the way was always for the pure joy of doing it. Right. And we liked it and we thought it was worthy, not worthy in the sense of like changing lives, but worthy in the sense of a, as a creative endeavor. Yeah. And never felt like work. Nobody was making any money. We had the most incredible crew of all time. You know, Matty La Batteig shooting it, Scott Sakamoto, you know, Mango, all these great guys, these people who worked with Bradley before. Yeah. Uh, um, you know, coming together and doing this for the love of doing it. I mean, I, I've never been on a set, we were talking about this too. I've never been on a set before where crew call is 7 a.m. and people are there at 6:45

• 15:10Speaker 04

and it's everybody's ready to go. No, no big trailers, none of the stuff, none of the kind of bells and whistles that you're accustomed to. And yet everybody is so much happier and so into the process of making this thing. It was to, to quote a great man, it was dope. Um, Bateman, did he coin that one? No, it was me. I said it earlier. Oh, you're quoting yourself.

There must be also something freeing and challenging in a way. Like, I mean, you say, like, you know, these were the ambitions starting out, and you certainly have done dramatic work throughout your career. But like, your bread and butter for many years has been like, go for the joke. No, like, like, your instinct has been go for the joke. And you kind of have to let that go, even on the stand-up scenes. The goal was not to be the most brilliant stand-up.

• 17:34Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 17:34Josh Horowitz?

  He's a mediocre stand-up at best.

• 17:35Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah. It was, it was sort of counterintuitive when I was going out there doing this. And I remember once, years ago, I forget where we were, but I was with Phil Orin and Chris Miller. You know, we'd done the Lego movies and Lego Batman and everything.

• 17:54Speaker 04

I want to say we were like at some sort of event or something. And Phil turned to me and he said, of course, you fart for a living.

• 18:03Speaker 04

And it made me laugh because I was like, yeah, you're kind of right.

• 18:09Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 18:10Speaker 04

But when you hear somebody say that to you, like, you're like, oh, wow. Now, I guarantee you, if Phil were here right now, he'd be like, dude, I didn't mean, I love him and he loves me. Like, but, but I get what he means. He's like, yeah, you're, that's what you do. You're a goof. You kind of goof around.

• 18:28Speaker 04

  And.

• 18:30Josh Horowitz?

Well, I guess the thing is like your superpower. You were one of the quickest people on a set or in real life. And like you have to kind of like, you were giving up your superpower for this essentially.

• 18:40Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 18:40Josh Horowitz?

  You're dulling your senses.

• 18:42Speaker 04

Yeah, a little bit, a little bit. I mean, I had to do that when we were first doing the stand up. Well, I remember one of the first times going on, if not the first time at the cellar, Bradley stopping me and saying, right before I was gonna go, we go, we're doing something different.

• 18:56Josh Horowitz?

  Yep.

• 18:57Speaker 04

And by that, I knew what he, I knew immediately what he meant, which is, don't go in there and try to win the room.

• 19:01Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 19:02Speaker 04

Don't go to try to rely on your old bag of tricks. Figure out a way, you're not a stand up, but maybe you could figure out a way to get a cheap laugh doing some bullshit.

• 19:09Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 19:09Speaker 04

That I've done before, or that I'll make up in the moment. Go in there and be this guy. Let it sit there. Be a guy who's talking about his marriage, breaking up and see what the audience does. And you don't know what's gonna happen. And then, that was the assignment. That was interesting. We, because he's not, he's not the Michael Jordan of comedy.

• 19:30Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 19:31Speaker 04

He's a guy trying to work out his thing. And we don't even tell the story that he goes on to be a comedian. We just tell the story that he goes out, that he starts to kind of connect things with himself and, and, and his wife. And so it was, that was a different, that was a very specific kind of narrow target to him. And also, in addition to that, then he'd go and have all these scenes, these, these sort of deeply vulnerable and emotional scenes.

• 20:00Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 20:01Speaker 04

You know, touching on issues that, that a lot of people can relate to. And in order to do them in a way that felt genuine and, and really connected, forced me to, and there's no, there's no button on the end of the scene.

• 20:16Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 20:17Speaker 04

Right? There's no way to kind of let the air out of it.

• 20:22Speaker 04

You know, even something like BoJack, which is just voice and people reference it all the time and try to sort of, you know, fit that, sort of retroactively fit everything I do into some sort of like frame of BoJack, which is a testament to how great the show was and Raphael was as a writer. But even BoJack would have these like deeply profound moments and scenes and stuff, and yet always let the air out of the bag.

• 20:48Josh Horowitz?

Right. Well, so much of this film is like, I watched it again last night, it's just behavior and like living. It's like walking. It's like I'm watching The Wrestler half the time. I'm like following you behind your back, picking up your kids, checking in for lice. And it's just like, there's a power in just the mundanity of living.

• 21:07Speaker 04

Well, A, yeah, and you know, a really good point, which is, A, you run the risk, but if you're dealing with material like this, you could get, you could end up getting kind of maudlin.

• 21:15Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 21:17Speaker 04

We wanted this to feel naturalistic and feel real. And part of that was behavior. You know, just the, first of all, people generally break up, they're not, they don't have a big argument in the middle of Times Square.

• 21:30Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 21:31Speaker 04

They, they pass each other in the hall on a Thursday morning. I would say like one person got the keys in their hand, and then the other person's like, hey, by the way, I can't do this anymore. You're like, wait, I'm going to work. Like, what?

• 21:42Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 21:42Speaker 04

You know, it just happens like that. And, you know, a lot of it was, there were so many moments in the film where there is no dialogue. So it's just, okay, well, it's Alex walking into his apartment. So Bradley would say, you know, you're gonna walk into your apartment. And it's been dressed to look like he's only been there for a couple of days. And he does, and he walks in and he's just come from the city and he's by himself.

• 22:12Speaker 04

And he shows me how he wants it to look and where the camera's gonna, what he's gonna do. And then, and then you gotta go in there and just behave like, what does that guy do in that moment? How do you walk into an apartment? How do you be affected by all this stuff and all this stuff that he's going through? In a way that feels really genuine, that doesn't feel like acting. Right. And that takes a like, cause you could go like, alright, I'm gonna go in there and play the guy doing the thing. No. Right. Go in there and be the guy doing that. Right. Have the confidence that just being is gonna be enough. Deep breath. Yeah. Letting go, letting go of all my bullshit, all this stuff that I think that I know. Don't worry about hitting your mark, don't worry about all this stuff, don't worry about anything, just be this guy.

• 22:56Speaker 04

And this sort of actory and whatever is that sounds, it was a much more difficult. You know, I watch these actors all the time and I think, I look at a guy like Benicio del Toro and I watch how effortlessly he moves and what he does and how he inhabits these characters and I'm, and I often wonder, I'm like, does he even, does he ever struggle with moments? Does he ever have those things? I wonder, I, you know? It's an art to making it look that easy, yeah. Yeah. It's the best of it. And he makes, I mean, that's a guy who I think deserves more credit than he gets. Yeah. Because, and part of the thing is he makes it look so effortless and he makes it look so easy. You don't even realize what, how brilliant he is.

• 23:41Speaker 04

Yeah, I mean, remember how much like he underplayed it in Sicario? Like, he's like barely speaking. He's incredible. And people go, and, and I think that there are people who would go and not, and I'm not suggesting that they're not sophisticated. They just go like, well, he's just being this guy, you have no idea. Right. And I think other actors recognize that and go, oh dude, what that guy's doing? Yeah. Is next fucking level. Yeah. He's not coming in there with like half a leg. Right. And, and sort of Scott a shacks. Exactly. You know what I mean? Yeah. And like, wow, look at that with this. No, he's going in there, he's being this guy and all his.

• 24:23Speaker 04

All the stuff that he's doing is is sort of internal and coming and he's showing you in very little, very subtle ways, these very subtle little colors, fucking unbelievable, man.

• 24:34Josh Horowitz?

This is also gonna be a very big film for people waiting for the the rocker reunion of you and Bradley Cooper, finally. Rocker heads out there.

• 24:41Speaker 04

I can't give any updates on that yet. I have so much exciting news for you.

• 24:46Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, I'll never forget, I did a Q and A with Rain for The Rocker that had like three people in the audience. It was like the saddest, like, no, it was, it was like, there was, it was like, right in real time, we saw what was happening to that film.

• 24:58Speaker 04

It was just, it was just A, no Qs.

• 25:01Josh Horowitz?

Exactly, exactly. But you go back with Bradley before that, I assume. What's the origin story of you and Bradley?

• 25:11Speaker 04

Bradley and I, we met through, my ex through Amy, and when we first started dating, and she was vetting me with her friends. And we went for, we met for drinks with Bradley and Janine Garofalo at Big Manis on Seventh Ave.

• 25:31Josh Horowitz?

  Nice.

• 25:31Speaker 04

Which used to be my, my local for many years.

• 25:34Josh Horowitz?

  Got it.

• 25:36Speaker 04

I was part of the furniture in there for way too long.

• 25:39Josh Horowitz?

And what is, I mean, I love that this is his, his third directing effort, he's clearly like passionate about like excavating relationships in the rawest ways, in all the permutations of that. And you kind of alluded to this, but like, you know, he's a friend, he also can direct pretty much anything he wants right now.

• 25:57Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:57Josh Horowitz?

And for him to say like, I want to work with you on this at this point in my career, that's, that's a meaningful act of generosity and friendship and, and all of it.

• 26:07Speaker 04

For sure. Yeah, I mean, it is, and, and, you know, it's, it is a.

• 26:17Speaker 04

It is a very generous act and it is a but at the same time. It also felt very um.

• 26:25Speaker 04

A it it it was very gratifying that he connected with the material.

• 26:30Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, I I wanna I feel like I I don't want to sound like he's no you a favor.

• 26:34Speaker 04

  No, no, no, no, no.

• 26:35Josh Horowitz?

But he obviously connect like of course this is right in what I'm saying is this is right in line with what he loves.

• 26:40Speaker 04

Yes, a hundred percent. And what I was gonna say is I just like that he connected with it.

• 26:44Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 26:45Speaker 04

And I like that it it was a vote of confidence that he connected with the idea that of me playing this part.

• 26:50Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 26:51Speaker 04

And that he was and it was through our relationship that he did recognize and and it was generous in the sense that this kind of stuff isn't wasn't coming my way.

• 27:03Speaker 04

And he recognized that and said this you should do something like this. And I'm gonna come and do it with you because you you can do this in a way that I maybe didn't even fully believe in myself when he the film that we presented him with that he read.

• 27:22Speaker 04

Had it really fully excavated the relationship.

• 27:28Speaker 04

In the way that it ended up being after he got his hands on it.

• 27:32Speaker 04

He understood like, oh, there's a lot here. And you can do this and you are gonna do and I'm gonna do it with you. And so so in that way, it was very generous.

• 27:43Josh Horowitz?

Do you think he resents that you're Batman and he's he's Jor-El? That's not I mean, that's like a that's like second tier. It's not even a superhero.

• 27:51Speaker 04

  I think I don't know, dude.

• 27:55Josh Horowitz?

  You tell me.

• 27:56Speaker 04

  Did my demeanor just shift?

• 27:58Josh Horowitz?

Well, your body language did and your voice changed.

• 28:00Speaker 04

  What way?

• 28:02Josh Horowitz?

How many Batman do you think you could you could beat up of the?

• 28:06Speaker 04

  Of the actual Batman?

• 28:07Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 28:10Josh Horowitz?

Well, Adam West is dead, so I'm not gonna see him beat up a dead body, but...

• 28:14Speaker 04

Oh, I'm saying so, one, okay.

• 28:17Josh Horowitz?

  The grave outkill him sadly.

• 28:19Speaker 04

You don't think that I could beat up a dead man?

• 28:21Josh Horowitz?

I mean, there's certain dead men. I bet Adam West is very fit even now.

• 28:24Speaker 04

Talk about a nod of auto confidence, I mean.

• 28:28Speaker 04

  Okay, but, but, okay, excluding...

• 28:30Josh Horowitz?

Oh, yeah, let's go with the living ones.

• 28:32Speaker 04

  Living Batmen.

• 28:34Josh Horowitz?

Bale, Clooney, what do we got? Pattinson.

• 28:39Speaker 04

  Patterson, Bale, Clooney, Pattinson.

• 28:41Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, and Keaton, of course.

• 28:43Speaker 04

  And Keaton?

• 28:43Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 28:45Speaker 04

  Is that it?

• 28:46Josh Horowitz?

I think that's all we got. Yeah. Keaton has some ears on you, but have you seen that guy? He's, he's fit.

• 28:52Speaker 04

  He's wiry.

• 28:53Josh Horowitz?

He is. It's all sinewy muscle.

• 28:55Speaker 04

I would not mess with Michael Keaton.

• 28:57Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 28:59Speaker 04

  Affleck, tough kid.

• 29:01Josh Horowitz?

  He's a truck. He's a tank.

• 29:04Speaker 04

  Clooney?

• 29:07Josh Horowitz?

He's had some, like, knee problems. He's got some...

• 29:09Speaker 04

He's got some edge. I'd have to, like, kick him in the knee.

• 29:12Josh Horowitz?

Right. And you're not above that. We know that, your fighting style.

• 29:15Speaker 04

Above that? I'm starting with that. Are you kidding? Above that? We're talking a street fight.

• 29:20Josh Horowitz?

  Right. And Bale?

• 29:22Speaker 04

And I don't know how to street fight.

• 29:23Josh Horowitz?

  But you know the term.

• 29:25Speaker 04

I have, or I am familiar with the term. Bale, he's Welsh. I don't, I have no idea.

• 29:29Josh Horowitz?

  What does that even mean?

• 29:30Speaker 04

I don't know. He's probably like, you know, pennies in a sock. I mean, this guy's gonna...

• 29:34Josh Horowitz?

He's got biggie blinders on you. He's gonna go, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 29:36Speaker 04

He's gonna curb stop me probably by the end of it. So I guess none of them?

• 29:41Josh Horowitz?

Do you have a vote? I mean, every Batman gets to vote on the next Batman.

• 29:44Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 29:44Josh Horowitz?

Who do you want to see play Batman?

• 29:46Speaker 04

We do a secret ballot thing. We kind of do like the Pope thing, yeah, with the smoke. Yeah.

• 29:53Speaker 04

Who would I like to see? I mean...

• 29:57Speaker 04

I don't know. I don't, there's so many good people out there who'd be good as the next Batman.

• 30:03Josh Horowitz?

People like the, that, the Reacher guy, Alan Richson?

• 30:06Speaker 04

Sure. He'd be good. Nice kid. He'd be really good.

• 30:12Speaker 04

  Probably Conan.

• 30:13Josh Horowitz?

Conan O'Brien, or Conan the Barbarian.

• 30:16Speaker 04

  Conan O'Brien.

• 30:16Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. Yeah. Well, it's a choice.

• 30:19Speaker 04

  I'd like to see it.

• 30:20Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 30:21Speaker 04

I'd love to see him do it, and he's wearing the, you know, the whatever, the, the scal, the thing. And then he just, he's talking, and then you just see a piece of red hair sticking through in his eye. And you're like, wait a second, Batman's a ginger?

• 30:37Josh Horowitz?

  It's time.

• 30:37Speaker 04

Guys, we're fine. You know what I mean?

• 30:40Josh Horowitz?

But let's talk about some of your sensibilities.

• 30:42Speaker 04

Hang on. Obviously, no offense to the gingers.

• 30:45Josh Horowitz?

You're canceled by the ginger community.

• 30:47Speaker 04

My son. One of my sons is a teenager. He's like, Dad, I'm gonna kill you.

• 30:59Speaker 05

• 32:18Josh Horowitz?

With Now and I always comes up. Let's talk with Now and I.

• 32:20Speaker 04

  That's my movie.

• 32:21Josh Horowitz?

With Now and I, you could do a drink with me.

• 32:22Speaker 04

With Now and I, or me, you mean?

• 32:24Josh Horowitz?

What's that? No, with you. You always bring it up.

• 32:25Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 32:26Josh Horowitz?

Have you broken bread with Richard E. Grant? Have you ever spoken to him?

• 32:28Speaker 04

I have broken bread with Richard E. Grant. About a month before I met John Bishop on the same fateful trip to Europe.

• 32:37Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 32:38Speaker 04

I had a chance to. It was a mutual friend's birthday, and we had dinner in a restaurant, and it was tremendous. And I had a moment where I was kind of at the table and... Somebody was between us and I kind of leaned back and he was kind of there and I just went, "Hey man, I'm sorry I had risk of embarrassing you. I just gotta tell you." I just, everything, you know, with, with it was such an incredible performance. And I know you weren't probably talking about it. It was 30 years ago and et cetera, but it had such an impact on me and my life as a narcissist, as an actor and okay, great. Who wants dessert? Like, I just, I was so-

• 33:09Josh Horowitz?

Had to get it out, yeah.

• 33:09Speaker 04

I was, I had to get it out and I shouldn't have, but, but I will say, we, we did end up staying in touch and he's such a lovely guy and it was really gratifying to go and do, show our film in London a couple of times this fall and we, we, we had a screening and we went back into the green room and nobody told me they knew I'd be excited and there he was and he'd come to see the film.

• 33:32Josh Horowitz?

  That's sweet.

• 33:33Speaker 04

And it was, and he was really complimentary and he gave me a big hug and to think that seven, what 17-year-old me would think, that I was, I made a film that he came and saw was incredible.

• 33:48Josh Horowitz?

That's like little Josh, grew up watching your work, because I'm so much younger than you.

• 33:53Speaker 04

  Stupid little Josh.

• 33:55Josh Horowitz?

No, I didn't say stupid, I said little Josh, I said little-

• 33:57Speaker 04

  I thought you said stupid.

• 33:59Josh Horowitz?

That's interesting that you heard that. No, why would I say stupid little Josh?

• 34:02Speaker 04

I have no idea. So little stupid Josh is sitting there.

• 34:06Josh Horowitz?

  Little fucking moron idiot.

• 34:10Speaker 04

That's not true. You don't feel that about me.

• 34:12Josh Horowitz?

  Which part? You're so old?

• 34:14Speaker 04

  No, what?

• 34:15Josh Horowitz?

The whole point of it was trying to make you feel old again.

• 34:18Speaker 04

Yeah. Oh, that was the point. So I'm glad that I shamed you then.

• 34:23Josh Horowitz?

  What is-

• 34:23Speaker 04

  I tell you what.

• 34:24Josh Horowitz?

  What?

• 34:25Speaker 04

Good offense beats good defense every time.

• 34:27Josh Horowitz?

  What was-

• 34:28Speaker 04

Prevent, defense prevents you from winning.

• 34:30Josh Horowitz?

  I don't watch sports. Um-

• 34:33Speaker 04

And that's not from sports. That's from theater.

• 34:35Josh Horowitz?

  Oh.

• 34:37Speaker 04

  The theater of sports.

• 34:41Josh Horowitz?

Please stop looking into the camera.

• 34:42Speaker 04

  Why?

• 34:43Josh Horowitz?

  Come on, I'm right here.

• 34:43Speaker 04

  The camera loves me.

• 34:44Josh Horowitz?

They, it does, but, okay. What was peak arrested? What's the episode, the season when you got-

• 34:54Josh Horowitz?

  It's insulting.

• 34:55Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 34:55Josh Horowitz?

Peak Arrested was, which season, which arc?

• 34:58Speaker 04

  Season two.

• 34:59Josh Horowitz?

  That's it.

• 35:00Speaker 04

I think so. I think season two hit our stride really felt like it was.

• 35:09Josh Horowitz?

Remind me of where was Joe at then? What were you? What was season two?

• 35:12Speaker 04

Running the company? Joe was running the company. He came in like a rock. But it was like a rock.

• 35:20Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 35:20Speaker 04

  And then the rock.

• 35:21Josh Horowitz?

  Thank you.

• 35:21Speaker 04

And then she came in with the thing and the pennies made it rain pennies, the board meeting. It was all that stuff. It was the uh, the $6,000 suit.

• 35:30Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 35:31Speaker 04

Um, it was the C word. Um, you gotta get rid of the C word. And she says, I heard that. All these great moments, not just the jokes. I think that we were really in such an amazing groove at that time.

• 35:44Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 35:44Speaker 04

We'd just come off winning the Emmy.

• 35:48Speaker 04

We were drunk on ice cream.

• 35:51Josh Horowitz?

Like literally not, it's not a metaphor.

• 35:53Speaker 04

No, not a metaphor. Yeah, literally. Oh, yeah.

• 35:55Josh Horowitz?

Is it, is it gauche to send a meme of yourself from Arrested? Do you ever do that? Have you ever sent?

• 36:00Speaker 04

I have. I have done it. I'm trying to think what the, what the thread was. It was, I did it to annoy somebody. It was a while ago and they were like, you can't send a meme of yourself. And I, and then I kept responding in different memes.

• 36:16Josh Horowitz?

Which was the first one, the initial, do you remember? I mean, I've made a huge mistake. It's just always works in every situation.

• 36:22Speaker 04

I made a huge mistake. It was definitely in there.

• 36:27Speaker 04

  Gosh, I don't even remember.

• 36:29Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 36:29Speaker 04

I don't remember the specifics, but I do remember doing that to annoy a friend of mine. Again, you cannot send, which is of course you double down.

• 36:38Josh Horowitz?

Okay, some random stuff for you.

• 36:40Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 36:40Josh Horowitz?

Um, I covered G-Force. I was, I was at that junket. I assume you were too. Did, have you, did you spend time with Nick Cage? Does he know that he was in a film with you?

• 36:50Speaker 04

Um. Yeah, well, well, we, we all get together once a year.

• 36:55Josh Horowitz?

  The G-Force gang? Yep.

• 36:57Speaker 04

My kids made fun of me recently for that film and I was like, how are your braces?

• 37:01Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 37:01Speaker 04

Pretty good? How was the roof over your head? You wanna make fun of dad's choices?

• 37:05Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 37:06Speaker 04

  More than dad does?

• 37:07Josh Horowitz?

I feel like I would get along well with your kids.

• 37:09Speaker 04

I see what they are. They are relentless, my teenage sons. They're, they're really funny, but they are relentless.

• 37:16Josh Horowitz?

What was the name of your character in Jonah Hex? Do you remember that?

• 37:20Speaker 04

  Lieutenant.

• 37:23Speaker 04

  I don't remember the.

• 37:24Josh Horowitz?

  Grass.

• 37:25Speaker 04

  Grass.

• 37:26Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 37:26Speaker 04

  Lieutenant Grass.

• 37:27Josh Horowitz?

Is there any happy memory related to Jonah Hex? Is there a moment you're like, oh shit?

• 37:31Speaker 04

  Rap.

• 37:35Josh Horowitz?

It's a rap and well or not?

• 37:35Speaker 04

No, I had, I had, no, that's not true. I had, I actually had a, there were some, there were some fun days. It was chaotic, that, that, that film was chaotic.

• 37:46Speaker 04

But I do remember switching hotels. They had me somewhere and I said, no, and they go, okay, well, we're gonna drive you to. So they drove me around and they were like, the first place we were in, they took me to this place. And there was like a little sort of boutiquey kind of, a little threadbare hotel, but kind of cool. And, and all I see on a balcony, like on the second floor balcony, is John Malkovich taking his socks out to dry them in the sun at this hotel. I'm good here. I want to be part of this.

• 38:16Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 38:16Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 38:17Josh Horowitz?

  That's the dream.

• 38:17Speaker 04

I mean, I'm such an admirer of his and I just wanted to. And, and also like we had dinner a couple of times, like a bunch of us and just listening to John Malkovich talk about his experiences just in the world.

• 38:28Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 38:28Speaker 04

Amazing. I mean, refer, he, according to him, he had just gotten back. By the way, this is like 2009, I think. He'd just gotten back from, by his account, Constantinople.

• 38:40Josh Horowitz?

  Is he a time traveler?

• 38:42Speaker 04

Which I adored about him. Because he's really, really genuine about who he is. I just love people who are like genuinely them. On top of being an amazing artist, he's just like, I just love that dude.

• 38:56Josh Horowitz?

  So this is like the.

• 38:57Speaker 04

He wouldn't remember me. I mean, honestly.

• 39:00Josh Horowitz?

  Come on in.

• 39:00Speaker 04

  He wouldn't.

• 39:01Josh Horowitz?

Oh my God. This is like the old Godfather versus Godfather two debate. Do you prefer Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles one or Out of the Shadows?

• 39:15Speaker 04

You're putting me in a very difficult position.

• 39:18Josh Horowitz?

I'll give you fifty dollars if you can name both directors of each, the director of each of those films.

• 39:23Speaker 04

  Teen Wolf and T-Dub, T-Dub 2?

• 39:26Josh Horowitz?

I'm not doing Teen Wolf, TMNT, your films.

• 39:28Speaker 04

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Teen Wolf?

• 39:32Josh Horowitz?

  What are you doing?

• 39:33Speaker 04

What are you, what are you, sorry?

• 39:34Josh Horowitz?

  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

• 39:35Speaker 04

Why are you wearing Teen Wolf?

• 39:36Josh Horowitz?

  I don't know.

• 39:38Speaker 04

  I've got dementia.

• 39:40Josh Horowitz?

Thanks for that exclusive, that's great. Well, Arnett has dementia. No, TMNT.

• 39:44Speaker 04

I don't want to just save it for the day that Thoreau would ask his baby, so my news would get buried. I've already forgot. What do I have?

• 39:52Josh Horowitz?

  Hysterical.

• 39:55Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, it's poor Dyr, it's not gonna make the dementia go away. TMNT 1 or TMNT 2?

• 40:00Speaker 04

  Somebody will get it. Okay.

• 40:04Speaker 04

Right, you're trying to make fun of me, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2?

• 40:09Josh Horowitz?

Out of the Shadows. Yes. And who is the director for bonus points for each of this?

• 40:17Speaker 04

Jonathan Leesman is the first film.

• 40:19Josh Horowitz?

  Yes.

• 40:20Speaker 04

And David Green, the second one.

• 40:23Josh Horowitz?

  I'm an asshole.

• 40:24Speaker 04

  I was on those films!

• 40:26Josh Horowitz?

I know, but you check out, we know this about you.

• 40:27Speaker 04

  Obviously.

• 40:31Speaker 04

The only thing I checked was paychecks.

• 40:33Josh Horowitz?

Hey, there it is. Last time you, no, we're not doing, okay.

• 40:36Speaker 04

  Will you do it?

• 40:37Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, I'll do it.

• 40:37Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 40:38Josh Horowitz?

Look at that. Do you remember the last time you had to audition? You're not an audition guy anymore.

• 40:45Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 40:47Speaker 04

The last time I had to go in and audition, I mean, I probably should audition more. When I say nothing comes my way, I'm sure there were things that I could go up for.

• 41:01Speaker 04

The last thing that I legitimately went and auditioned for...

• 41:07Speaker 04

  Might have been Jonah Hex.

• 41:12Josh Horowitz?

  Really?

• 41:12Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 41:13Josh Horowitz?

And see where that got you?

• 41:15Speaker 04

  Got me this part.

• 41:16Josh Horowitz?

  There's a lesson there. Yeah.

• 41:18Speaker 04

It got me to dinner with John Malkin.

• 41:20Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, you got to see his socks. That's true, I guess, yeah. Were you a good auditioner back in the day?

• 41:24Speaker 04

I was. I got good. People talk about it all the time. Like, you get, that becomes a thing, and then you get a job, and you're like, oh shit, I now gotta do it.

• 41:31Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 41:32Speaker 04

You hear that a lot, but it's because it's true. Yeah, I got, it's a thing that you gotta kind of get good at.

• 41:40Josh Horowitz?

Because like, in the, we've talked about like, kind of, The Road to Arrested, like, you were getting jobs, just they weren't turning into anything.

• 41:46Speaker 04

Exactly right. And, and, so I got a lot of, yeah, I got a lot of, I ended up like, doing a bunch of pilots and testing for a bunch of pilots, getting clothes or doing stuff and kind of eking out a living, but none of it really, yeah. And it was only, Arrested was funny because, I think I've told this before, but only because I'd, I'd been fired off a job the year before and I didn't want to do it, they kind of, the one who casted it, it cast the thing, and it was like, we can't find this part, can't, and I finally went, okay, I'll go in. I wasn't good at audition for Pilates season that year, and it was the only thing I read for. And then changed my life.

• 42:26Josh Horowitz?

Okay, we're gonna end here. The profoundly random questionnaire for you, Will Arnett. You ready?

• 42:30Speaker 04

  Yep.

• 42:30Josh Horowitz?

  Dogs or cats?

• 42:33Speaker 04

  Dogs.

• 42:35Josh Horowitz?

  What do you collect?

• 42:41Speaker 04

  Souls.

• 42:43Josh Horowitz?

  Not surprising, but.

• 42:45Speaker 04

  Not surprising.

• 42:46Josh Horowitz?

  No.

• 42:49Speaker 04

I don't really, okay, that's not true. Full disclosure? I don't have time for the year.

• 42:59Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, yeah, I get it. Yeah, you're a busy man.

• 43:00Speaker 04

  Full disclosure, or jackets?

• 43:05Josh Horowitz?

Like bomber jacket? What kind of, just anything, any outer layer?

• 43:10Speaker 04

Ghosts and jackets. Anybody who knows me knows it. That's a totally true story. And even, people are like, wow, you've got a lot of jackets. And I don't, I generally don't throw any of them away. So I have some of them that are like 30 years old.

• 43:24Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 43:24Speaker 04

  I just.

• 43:25Josh Horowitz?

No wonder there's this friction with you and Thoreau. He's trying to strip all his clothing off. You're trying to layer up.

• 43:30Speaker 04

  Layer up.

• 43:32Josh Horowitz?

The best video game of all time is?

• 43:34Speaker 04

  Call of Duty.

• 43:37Josh Horowitz?

What's the wallpaper on your phone?

• 43:42Speaker 04

Right now, well, right now it's my three sons. Yeah.

• 43:46Josh Horowitz?

  This is accepted.

• 43:47Speaker 04

Here's a, here's a new thing that my 15 year old taught me was doing the wallpaper on a, on a chat.

• 43:52Josh Horowitz?

  Oh.

• 43:52Speaker 04

Do you know how to do that?

• 43:53Josh Horowitz?

No, I don't. So. I don't know how to use the internet, remember?

• 43:57Speaker 04

Yeah, I don't remember because remember I'm going through a whole thing.

• 44:02Speaker 04

My son showed me how to do wallpaper on a chat, like on a, on a text thread. And on a thread with Sean and Jason, let me see if I can do this in a way that you can't read what I wrote about you.

• 44:15Josh Horowitz?

  Hi.

• 44:15Speaker 04

Is, is just a picture of baby.

• 44:16Josh Horowitz?

  And eating, love it.

• 44:20Speaker 04

  It's so good.

• 44:21Josh Horowitz?

Last actor you were mistaken for?

• 44:25Speaker 04

  Um, myself.

• 44:27Josh Horowitz?

  How's that work?

• 44:28Speaker 04

True story, like, like what's today, uh, excuse me, last Thursday, so less than a week ago, we were in London, standing outside of this restaurant, I was with Mark Javel, my writing partner, another friend of ours, Lewis, and these girls come up and this girl goes, the French girl, she goes, you, I, I have to say you look so much like the guy from Arrested Development. I go, I get that all the time. She goes, no, but really you look like him. I go, I know. But, but different, like kind of, and I go older. And she goes, yeah, but older. And I go, well, yeah. And, and then she goes, but, uh, she goes, I can't remember his name. And I go, and she sort of, and I go, I am him. And she goes, no, no, no, but you do look like him. I go, okay, well then, fine.

• 45:10Speaker 04

At which point she's like, don't, and she goes, but I can't remember. I go, well, why don't you Google him, tell me? She goes, okay, I will, but, but it's not, but it is so close, eh? And she pulls up like this and then she goes, ah, Will Arnett, at which point when she looks up, I'm holding my driver's license. And I go, okay?

• 45:28Speaker 04

She goes, "Oh, it is you." And I go, "Yeah, I told you."

• 45:30Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, we could have.

• 45:31Speaker 04

But it was so good. I was mistaken for myself. Didn't believe because I look older.

• 45:37Josh Horowitz?

  The theme of the interview.

• 45:39Speaker 04

  That I'm old?

• 45:40Josh Horowitz?

No. What's the worst note a director has ever given you, Will Arnett?

• 45:45Speaker 04

  Have fun with it.

• 45:46Josh Horowitz?

  You don't like that?

• 45:47Speaker 04

It's the worst. But anytime you do anything, here's what I. I was saying this earlier, like you'll go, you'll do something and the worst, the thing that I don't like hearing is I go.

• 46:01Speaker 04

You know what I thought would be really fun? I'm like, uh-oh.

• 46:07Speaker 04

Or you know what I thought would be really funny? Let's hear it.

• 46:13Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 46:15Josh Horowitz?

And finally, rapid fire, I promise. Actor that always makes you happy?

• 46:20Speaker 04

  Actor that always.

• 46:21Josh Horowitz?

You see them on screen, you're in a better mood.

• 46:23Speaker 04

Actor that always makes me happy.

• 46:28Josh Horowitz?

You've no joy in your heart, nothing.

• 46:29Speaker 04

No, I'm just trying to think. John Goodman?

• 46:32Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 46:33Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:33Josh Horowitz?

  Movie that makes you sad?

• 46:40Speaker 04

  Movie that makes me sad?

• 46:48Speaker 04

  I don't watch a lot.

• 46:50Josh Horowitz?

  Ever seen a movie before?

• 46:51Speaker 04

  I've never seen.

• 46:52Josh Horowitz?

You should try one of those movies.

• 46:53Speaker 04

Explain to me, what is a movie that makes me sad?

• 46:56Josh Horowitz?

  Let's go to prison?

• 47:01Speaker 04

And a. Brother Sullivan, their missed opportunity.

• 47:04Josh Horowitz?

And a food that makes you confused?

• 47:07Speaker 04

Oh, and a food that makes me confused? Pentecostal.

• 47:12Speaker 04

  The dessert?

• 47:12Josh Horowitz?

Is it the consistency, like the?

• 47:14Speaker 04

No, just, nobody wants it. It's on the menu, nobody's ordering it. Stop.

• 47:20Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 47:20Speaker 04

It's one of those things like, no, you're making it.

• 47:24Speaker 04

You think nobody else wants it?

• 47:27Josh Horowitz?

It's a hot take from Will Ernitz.

• 47:30Josh Horowitz?

  Hey.

• 47:30Speaker 04

  Hey.

• 47:31Josh Horowitz?

Congratulations. In all earnestness, you kill it in this movie.

• 47:33Speaker 04

  Thank you.

• 47:34Josh Horowitz?

  It's fantastic.

• 47:35Speaker 04

  Thank you, dude.

• 47:35Josh Horowitz?

I'm sorry for the passive aggressive vibe, but this is what we do.

• 47:40Speaker 04

  Yeah, he felt aggressive.

• 47:41Speaker 00

  No.

• 47:42Speaker 04

  Not a ton of passive.

• 47:44Josh Horowitz?

  Thanks, buddy. I appreciate it.

• 47:45Speaker 04

  Don't you, dude?

• 47:47Speaker 02
