Hello, everyone. Welcome to another episode of Good Hang. Very excited about our guest today, Jennifer Lawrence. Jen and I, we have a good time, man. We laugh a lot in this episode and we talk about a lot of great things. Her incredible career, the surprising parts of parenthood, her long torso, my short legs. And we do what we always like to do here on Good Hang. We sing along to Shania Twain. But before we get started, we want to talk to somebody who knows our guest, who can speak well behind her back and give me a question to ask this guest. And we are joined by Justine Shiraki. Justine is a producer. She runs Excellent Cadaver, the production company that's produced films like Causeway and Die My Love. And her and Jen have been friends forever.

• 1:21Amy Poehler?

So Justine, are you there? Let's get started.

• 2:17Speaker 01

  Hey, girl.

• 2:17Amy Poehler?

Hi. I'm really happy to talk to you today because, I mean, I think the stuff that you guys have done together is really, really special, but also you just shared a long history together as people in the world and friends.

• 2:29Speaker 01

Well, that's very generous of you to say, and obviously, we've been enormous fans for 100 years, so it's like such an honor to talk to you, and I'm like pinching myself, and she is too, that she's coming on the podcast.

• 2:42Amy Poehler?

Oh, my God, she's so good at podcasts. I mean, she's so good at talking.

• 2:45Speaker 01

That's, that's her shit, for sure.

• 2:48Amy Poehler?

Totally. Now, before we start talking about Jennifer, I do want to talk about you. Where did you grow up?

• 2:55Speaker 01

I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware.

• 2:56Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 2:57Speaker 01

I actually think we have Aubrey Plaza in common. I grew up with Aubrey and did community theater with her.

• 3:02Amy Poehler?

  You did?

• 3:03Speaker 01

  In my childhood, yes, yes.

• 3:05Amy Poehler?

You guys went to the same schoo-- like, you were in the same town?

• 3:07Speaker 01

Yeah, we went to the same elementary school, and we both were in community theater at the Wilmington Drama League, an esteemed venue for like most of our, most of our childhood.

• 3:19Amy Poehler?

Oh, my gosh, what was baby Plaza like?

• 3:22Speaker 01

Exactly the same as adult Plaza.

• 3:25Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 3:27Speaker 01

Hasn't changed a bit. The greatest, the greatest.

• 3:31Amy Poehler?

That's, what a small world. And so, the two of you are like there doing shows and, and performing, and then where, where does that take you after you graduate?

• 3:40Speaker 01

I didn't really know where I would fit in film, and so I, you know, took a bunch of odd jobs and, and explored, and during that period, I met Jen.

• 3:51Amy Poehler?

And what was your first impression of her when you met?

• 3:53Speaker 01

Oh, my first impression of Jen was that she was a wild beast, and also that she had, because Jen didn't have like a traditional education, she also swerved a lot of the like social anxiety that I think a lot of people our age had been plagued with. So Jen had this like abandon and lack of self-consciousness that was really unfamiliar to all of our friends. So we were sort of like wide-eyed by her, and I think that that's something that she still possesses all these years later. It's something that she hasn't outgrown, or, you know, she's, she's never... Yeah, she has not become jaded by her totally surreal lifestyle.

• 4:38Amy Poehler?

So how do you go from two young women like sitting on a couch in a small LA apartment to running this big company and making these big movies? Like, how does that work?

• 4:47Speaker 01

Oh, man. I mean, it's a loaded question. I think that we met as young women and obviously developed our taste together. We were discovering film together. Everything from Wong Kar Wai to Sex and the City, you know, like it ran the gamut. And I also think that we became best friends. And so what we care about, similar things, we're moved by similar things. We have similar reactions to life and what's happening in the world. And that really is the basis for our decision making around what we take on as producers. So I think

• 5:31Speaker 01

the obviously like extraordinary happenstance of Jen's young success and her being in this incredible position to get things made. And then Jen and I continuing to like care for our relationship and continuing to grow together. And so I think The Odyssey has involved a ton of hard work and care and all the things you would imagine. And also us continuing to grow and being excited to elevate each other.

• 6:10Amy Poehler?

  And also, I loved Causeway.

• 6:13Speaker 01

  Oh, thank you.

• 6:13Amy Poehler?

Such a beautiful movie. I want to talk to Jenna about it. I just, it's just a great, great movie. Beautiful director, Lila.

• 6:20Speaker 01

  We love Lila.

• 6:21Amy Poehler?

Brian is so, Brian Tyree Henry is so good. Jen is so convincing as the character that she plays, like a physically and kind of spiritually wounded vet who's returning home. It's so good. Such a good movie.

• 6:36Speaker 01

It's always so nice to see Jen in those roles where the kind of like stripped back, quieter performances where it's so much of it is just happening in her eyes, you know?

• 6:48Amy Poehler?

I don't. I mean, I don't, I don't know how to act like that. Like, I mean, we were kind of talking about, we were talking about interviewing her and you know, it's hard not to be like, you're so good at acting.

• 7:02Amy Poehler?

Well, she is so good at acting.

• 7:04Speaker 01

  She's, she's good. That's pretty fucking good.

• 7:08Amy Poehler?

Are there times when you're watching her and you're like, damn, she's really good at acting?

• 7:12Speaker 01

Every time, every time. Like, I, I've sat on probably 11 sets with Jen, and every time my mind is just like blowing out of my face. I'm like, still? Like, it does not get old. She just levels up every time.

• 7:25Amy Poehler?

You know her really well. You know, sometimes we, we ask people to talk well behind our guest's back, and they've worked with them, or they kind of know them. But you, you know her really, really well. You've known her for a really long time, and you're deep partners in, in, in work, and you're loving friends in life. And what do you think I should ask her today? What do you want to know about, hear about, or what do you think she'd want to talk about, or a story she'd want to tell?

• 7:54Speaker 01

Oh, man. I mean, with Jen, it's funny because she is so, um, like transparent in the faces. Like, I don't think that she's somebody who, where there are like a ton of subjects that are off limits.

• 8:08Amy Poehler?

Well, it's, okay, this is really helpful because I've been prepping for the interview, and I don't want to put her in an uncomfortable position ever to ask her something she doesn't want to talk about. But she also feels really, um, well aware of what she feels comfortable talking about, I guess.

• 8:24Speaker 01

I think she is. And I think she'll also, like, tell you. Like, I think that she, I think, like, she'll pivot if she needs to.

• 8:33Amy Poehler?

You never have to answer a question if you don't want to answer it. And it is, and it's a magic trick to not answer it. And people often forget that, what question they asked.

• 8:41Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 8:42Amy Poehler?

I mean, this isn't a good thing to tell a guest, probably. This is probably not a good thing to get. But anyway, do you have, it doesn't have to be a heavy question. It can be something small. Anything that you think we should ask her today.

• 8:54Speaker 01

I mean, gosh, like, maybe because she's in a position of constantly being asked questions, and she is never in charge of what is being asked. Like, maybe it's asking her, like, what would you like to talk more about that you don't feel?

• 9:06Amy Poehler?

  Whoa, that's a good friend.

• 9:08Speaker 01

The opportunity to declare, you know? Maybe, maybe she has a big announcement. Or just something that she'd like to, like, reflect on.

• 9:17Amy Poehler?

You know what? That's a really good friend, because what you're basically saying is just check in with her and see if there's anything else she wants to talk about.

• 9:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:25Amy Poehler?

  It's so true.

• 9:26Speaker 01

Or anything that she, like, is tired of talking about, you know? That too.

• 9:30Amy Poehler?

Yeah. What are you, what do you want? It's basically like you're at the TSA and it's like, what do you want to declare?

• 9:39Amy Poehler?

And what perishables would you like to get rid of?

• 9:42Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 9:42Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Well, no, but thank you so much. And I will give your best to Aubrey Plaza. I like picturing you guys being weird together in Wilmington.

• 9:52Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's, that's, that's the right picture.

• 9:54Amy Poehler?

Justine, thank you so much for your time. Really appreciate it.

• 9:58Speaker 01

Thank you. Thank you for having me.

• 9:59Amy Poehler?

  Of course.

• 9:59Speaker 01

  Jen.

• 10:00Amy Poehler?

All right. Nice talking to you.

• 10:01Speaker 01

I get to watch. All right. See you later.

• 10:02Amy Poehler?

  Okay. Take care. Bye.

• 10:34Amy Poehler?

  Jen?

• 10:35Speaker 02

Hi. My voice was so deep.

• 10:37Amy Poehler?

  Hi.

• 10:40Amy Poehler?

I'm very excited that you're here.

• 10:41Speaker 02

I'm so excited to be here. I am a really, really huge fan.

• 10:44Amy Poehler?

  Oh, come on.

• 10:46Speaker 02

  I am.

• 10:47Amy Poehler?

  Say more.

• 10:48Speaker 02

  No, I'm obviously being sarcastic.

• 10:50Amy Poehler?

Well, I was worried about what to wear today because your style is so dope.

• 10:54Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 10:55Amy Poehler?

  You have a great style.

• 10:57Speaker 02

Oh, my God, that's the only thing you need to say to me ever.

• 11:00Amy Poehler?

And what is your, I want to know, how do you pick clothes? What is your relationship to clothes?

• 11:06Speaker 02

Okay, thank you so much. Um, we'd love to talk about this. I'll just.

• 11:09Amy Poehler?

Because I'm fascinated because I'm struggling with mine.

• 11:11Speaker 02

Um, I, well, I have, I have very opinionated friends. One in particular, very opinionated friend. And we, we clear out a closet, we, I do, I do a lot of closet cleanouts. I think living in New York helps with that.

• 11:23Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 11:24Speaker 02

I don't have a lot of excess stuff that confuses me. I have things that I really like.

• 11:29Amy Poehler?

Do you think about, do you plan your outfits for the, I mean, obviously with press, it's different.

• 11:33Speaker 02

  Loosely. I mean, I.

• 11:34Amy Poehler?

Do you plan your outfits for the week?

• 11:35Speaker 02

I do it like mentally. I like start kind of planning something and I, I take my kid to school and I know that I'm going to get photographed.

• 11:42Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 11:43Speaker 02

So I, I do kind of do like a mental, like.

• 11:46Amy Poehler?

Like what do I, well, how do I want to present today?

• 11:49Speaker 02

  No.

• 11:50Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 11:53Speaker 02

Because the answer is always the same. Today I want to present as like effortless, but you know, like,

• 11:59Amy Poehler?

I don't even know what I put on.

• 12:03Speaker 02

And you know what else is really important to remember?

• 12:05Amy Poehler?

  Tell me.

• 12:06Speaker 02

  You can write it down.

• 12:07Amy Poehler?

  I'm ready.

• 12:07Speaker 02

  Big goes with big.

• 12:11Amy Poehler?

Okay, this is a tall girl.

• 12:12Speaker 02

If it's going to be, if it's, no, but if it's going to be, if it's going to be tight, if you're going to have a baggy and a tight, you cannot ever have tight on the bottom, baggy on the top. Or you'll look like a lamp. You can have baggy on the bottom and tight on the top. But you cannot do the other way around.

• 12:28Amy Poehler?

But I'll tell you something about baggy on the bottom. I wore a baggy on the bottom for you today.

• 12:32Speaker 02

  You did?

• 12:32Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I'll show you later. I have baggy pants. I'm so short. It's like, it's tough.

• 12:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:40Amy Poehler?

It's tough. It's tough to go baggy on the bottom, but God forbid.

• 12:43Speaker 02

  But a really long torso.

• 12:46Speaker 02

Yeah, and big, thick, meaty arms.

• 12:53Amy Poehler?

So, okay, so long torso, I see. Then that silhouette, you know your silhouette.

• 12:57Speaker 02

  I guess.

• 12:58Amy Poehler?

Yeah, and it's, I mean, you've got great style.

• 13:00Speaker 02

  Knowing is not loving.

• 13:01Amy Poehler?

Dude, you've got great style. I mean, I, and I, and like you, like, I'm always just looking to see how women are dressing. Like, not, not, like, just truly, like, how do we, not just the styles and fads.

• 13:14Speaker 02

I try to take mental notes.

• 13:15Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 13:16Speaker 02

  When I see something.

• 13:17Amy Poehler?

And when I actually feel comfortable, it feels like such a win.

• 13:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 13:21Amy Poehler?

To wear something that you feel like you look good in and you also feel good in, it's like a hard thing to find.

• 13:26Speaker 02

Yeah, you feel like you're like representing yourself accurately.

• 13:28Amy Poehler?

Yeah, yeah. Or the worst thing is like when you're like, I think I nailed it. And you see the picture and you're like.

• 13:35Speaker 02

Years later. Not even years later, oh my God.

• 13:38Amy Poehler?

You're like, I remember feeling really good.

• 13:40Speaker 02

Yeah. I had that recently because I was postpartum, but I was like, but I, but I had like, in my, with my second, I had like bad postpartum. So like I wasn't eating, so I felt really skinny.

• 13:50Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 13:51Speaker 02

  But I wasn't.

• 13:52Amy Poehler?

  But inside you felt.

• 13:54Speaker 02

I was like strapless, let's do this. And my baby was like three weeks old.

• 13:59Amy Poehler?

I mean, you, like, a lot of people, like, were working through a lot of your pregnancies. And that's also a weird thing too, because you're like, your, your body is kind of, you're like bringing your body along for the ride.

• 14:09Speaker 02

Well, I was surprised more people haven't talked about how skinny I am and I'm my love because I'm pregnant.

• 14:16Speaker 02

And I've been waiting and nobody said it. Nobody's like, wow, you were pregnant? You looked so skinny. Like, I've never had an Ozempic rumor.

• 14:25Amy Poehler?

  Not yet.

• 14:27Speaker 02

  Not yet?

• 14:27Amy Poehler?

Not yet, honey. Not yet. After this, after this, we're gonna take this frame and we're gonna squeeze it down. No, but it is true. It's like-

• 14:35Speaker 02

When you talk about how tall I am, I'm like, oh.

• 14:39Amy Poehler?

No, but I, I, I love what you've been talking about. We're gonna, we have so many things to talk about today. And I just want to start by saying, this is what I've gleaned from meeting you briefly and feeling like I, and I know people who know you really well and just like-

• 14:52Speaker 02

  Who?

• 14:53Amy Poehler?

Um, I don't want to talk about them.

• 14:56Speaker 02

  Like my mom?

• 14:59Amy Poehler?

I'm best friends with your mom.

• 15:03Amy Poehler?

But you seem, and I know it's gonna sound cheesy, but you like women.

• 15:08Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 15:09Amy Poehler?

  I know, but-

• 15:09Speaker 02

  I do.

• 15:10Amy Poehler?

  You do, and it shows.

• 15:11Speaker 02

Well, what do you think I like, love white men? Oh, my God. If I could just be their champion, they're so misunderstood.

• 15:19Amy Poehler?

You're always like, wait, think about the other side.

• 15:21Speaker 02

  Not all men.

• 15:24Speaker 02

  I have it tattooed.

• 15:25Amy Poehler?

No, but you know, you, you, and the reason why, to me, it's not what you say, it's not what one says is what they do. And what you do all the time that I think women do for each other is you like, you tell the real, real behind something. Like, you, you, you talk about like, this was difficult, or I'm thinking about this, or like, you basically, I think when people stay mysterious, it's like a disservice to other women. It's just like, okay, you know? And you do this thing that I really appreciate that comes through, which is you're trying to be honest in real time and trying to connect. And I think that's, I think that's what women do for other women when they like women. That's the best way to say it.

• 16:03Speaker 02

  Thanks.

• 16:03Amy Poehler?

And so, like, today, when I was thinking about our interview, I was like- I've been really hearing you talk about how you're trying to figure out the balance between who do I want to be and what like what parts of me do I want to give out to the rest of the world and what parts do I want to keep for myself, which feels like very like 30s.

• 16:21Speaker 02

  Totally.

• 16:22Amy Poehler?

Thing. Where are you at right now with the balance of that? Because you are so famous and so real.

• 16:27Speaker 02

  Oh, thank you.

• 16:28Amy Poehler?

And those two things are not always the case.

• 16:31Speaker 02

Right. I think that I, when I do press, I should do half than what normal people do. Because I see my quotes and they like, they're insane. Like, like Jennifer Lawrence calls Kourtney Kardashian annoying. Like, it's just too, you know?

• 16:44Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, it's, you're right. It's, it's, but it.

• 16:46Speaker 02

  It carries.

• 16:48Amy Poehler?

It carries. But it's, well, first of all, honestly, it's funny.

• 16:53Speaker 02

  Oh, thank you.

• 16:54Amy Poehler?

  Because it's, you're so funny.

• 16:54Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 16:55Amy Poehler?

And the third piece of the puzzle, I'll say, is that you're very, you feel like a real person.

• 17:00Speaker 02

  Erotic.

• 17:01Amy Poehler?

  You're very erotic.

• 17:02Speaker 02

Oh, I thought you were gonna say erotic.

• 17:04Amy Poehler?

You've had your hand on my knee this entire interview. And it's a long stretch. You have a really long arm.

• 17:09Speaker 02

  These pants are baggy.

• 17:11Amy Poehler?

Really too baggy to get in there. Um, no, you're, you're, you're famous and, uh, erotic.

• 17:19Speaker 02

  Erotic.

• 17:20Amy Poehler?

  And real and deeply funny.

• 17:22Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 17:23Amy Poehler?

  Like genuinely funny.

• 17:24Speaker 02

Oh, my God, you have no idea what that's like coming from you.

• 17:25Amy Poehler?

  Jay Law.

• 17:26Speaker 02

  You're my hero.

• 17:27Amy Poehler?

Dude, but I, I don't say that to everybody. And you know, God is fair. Like, usually you don't have all those things going at once. Usually you have like, very like, important, interesting actor who's like, really good at acting, but maybe like, you know, maybe not the funniest. Or you have a deeply funny person who you wouldn't maybe believe in a scene, but you can do both.

• 17:46Speaker 02

  Oh, thank you.

• 17:47Amy Poehler?

  You're deeply, deeply.

• 17:48Speaker 02

I could do this all day.

• 17:49Amy Poehler?

Okay, well, I'm glazing you, as the kids like to say.

• 17:51Speaker 02

What's, is that what they say?

• 17:52Amy Poehler?

  You don't know.

• 17:53Speaker 02

  Glazing? Well, you've got teenagers.

• 17:55Amy Poehler?

What do you want to know about teens? I know everything. You have two boys? I have two boys.

• 17:59Speaker 02

I'm, I, you know, I missed my window to really ask about six, seven. I know that it's like.

• 18:04Amy Poehler?

  It's over now.

• 18:05Speaker 02

I know. I missed the window. So I don't even care anymore.

• 18:07Amy Poehler?

Actually, actually, anything that we know is over.

• 18:10Speaker 02

Right. By the time it gets to like your mom.

• 18:12Amy Poehler?

Yeah, like if the New York Times is writing about it, it's, it's been over.

• 18:16Speaker 02

  It's over. Okay.

• 18:17Amy Poehler?

Like, no one's saying it anymore. But to explain six, seven.

• 18:19Speaker 02

  I really, really liked Boots.

• 18:21Amy Poehler?

  Like, like.

• 18:22Speaker 02

Like instead of period boots, but that's from Drag Race.

• 18:26Amy Poehler?

  I'm deceased. Boots like.

• 18:28Speaker 02

Yeah, like, well, like period and of boots.

• 18:31Amy Poehler?

Right. I feel like period's still around. I feel like.

• 18:34Speaker 02

But you're supposed to replace it with boots, I think, or that's just a gay culture thing. I don't actually know.

• 18:39Amy Poehler?

Yeah, we could. I have a laptop. We could look it up. We could spend the entire.

• 18:44Speaker 02

  We could ask ChatGPT.

• 18:46Amy Poehler?

Hello, do we still say boots?

• 18:48Speaker 03

Young culture or just gay monoculture?

• 18:53Speaker 03

  Asking for a.

• 18:55Amy Poehler?

But what is it? But you're in your mid 30s now. You are, I bet you're starting to feel just, just what you just expressed, which is like, oh, old.

• 19:04Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 19:04Amy Poehler?

But it's weird, right? Because you're, you do not feel old in your, one does not really feel old in their 20s.

• 19:09Speaker 02

  My assistant is 23.

• 19:11Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 19:11Speaker 02

And so like I was doing like a closet clean out yesterday and she was like, oh my God, these are like real skinny jeans.

• 19:19Speaker 02

Like they, like it was like an artifact. She was like, wow, they really do go in at the bottom. And I'm like, and we were talking about baby mama. And I'm like, so funny, so funny. She was like, that was probably like the first comedy I ever saw. And I was like, how old were you? Seven?

• 19:32Amy Poehler?

  You're a millennial?

• 19:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 19:34Amy Poehler?

  Like mid millennial.

• 19:35Speaker 02

I don't know when it begins or ends, but I was born in 90.

• 19:39Amy Poehler?

You know, there's this, I feel like you would like this, but we'll probably cut it. But there's this book that I'm obsessed with called The Fourth Turning. And it's all about how 80 years of history just keep repeating itself and we're kind of getting at the end of the chaos era, which makes sense, right? For the past like 20, whatever years. But it's like each generation throughout the years have come forward to save like, you know, different eras from peril. And the millennials are going to be the heroes in the next, the next.

• 20:08Amy Poehler?

  Good luck.

• 20:08Speaker 02

Oh, that sounds so hard. I'm so tired.

• 20:11Amy Poehler?

But I believe in you and I wish you the best of luck.

• 20:14Speaker 02

I was hoping that these kids would save us.

• 20:17Amy Poehler?

It's you guys. And I feel like that makes sense because we've really, you know, I'm Gen X. We, everybody like really gave it to millennials and like roll their eyes at how well parented they were, how blah, blah, blah. We just like thought that they were. And I think they're going to really show us they're going to save things. So chop, chop.

• 20:36Speaker 02

Okay. All right. I'll try. Yeah, it is funny when you say like what gentle parenting is gonna.

• 20:41Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 20:42Speaker 02

  Do.

• 20:42Amy Poehler?

Yeah. But okay, speaking of gentle parenting, this is a good segue. I want to get to, you go from, I'm blown away by this story and I'm sure you've told it before, but I just need to know the details, which is Louisville, you're on a trip to New York with your mom.

• 20:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:59Amy Poehler?

And a guy comes up on the street and says, here's my card. Can I take your picture? Yeah, tell us the story.

• 21:06Speaker 02

Well, he took, okay, I will tell you the story and I just, I feel like I'm lying.

• 21:09Amy Poehler?

  Okay, it's an amazing story.

• 21:11Speaker 02

Okay, but it's, it is the truth, but it's just one of those, I'm like a woman, so I feel like I have to like apologize and then I'm lying. I was in New York, I'm sorry, for spring break and I was watching street dancing in Union Square.

• 21:25Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 21:26Speaker 02

Never seen that before, not a lot of street dancing in Louisville. And a man named Daniel, who is a talent scout, came up to me and my mom and was like, can I take her picture? I'm like a model scout. And we were just like, cool, okay, you know, no sense of danger.

• 21:41Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 21:42Speaker 02

If he had like told us to meet him at a hotel room, we 100% would have.

• 21:46Amy Poehler?

  Totally.

• 21:47Speaker 02

And then he took my picture on the street. Joe Jonas actually wore the picture on his T-shirt at a concert one time and it was the first time I had seen that picture since it happened. I was like, how did Joe Jonas get it?

• 21:59Amy Poehler?

  That's so weird.

• 22:00Speaker 02

  Weird. I've since seen it.

• 22:03Amy Poehler?

  Got it.

• 22:04Speaker 02

I don't really know what to do with it, I'm not gonna like print it out. And so then I went and started being interviewed by like modeling agencies and what was becoming like really apparent was like, if you're a model, you're a model. Like if you're a model, you're traveling, you're not acting, like there's no commercials, there's no, you know. So somewhere in those interviews, I decided that I would only sign with an agency that would also let me act. Even though it hadn't been like an actual.

• 22:29Amy Poehler?

Did you know any actors growing up? Did you think you would do that as a job?

• 22:33Speaker 02

  No, never.

• 22:34Amy Poehler?

  Wild.

• 22:35Speaker 02

But then once it kind of like was brought up as a possibility, I mean, I did, I would always watch like Hilary Duff, like when I got home from school and then I would like... Do Hilary Duff like in the mirror? So it kind of all came together.

• 22:49Amy Poehler?

But it is really random that someone came up and was like, hey, kid, throw this pitch and you like have the most amazing fastball. You're so good at acting.

• 22:56Speaker 02

  Oh, thank you.

• 22:57Amy Poehler?

And the fact that someone was like, hey, do you want to go do this acting thing? I mean, I guess it was through modeling, but like they were like, hey, you, I mean, it's so wild. It's, it's a needle in a haystack kind of. Do you think you would have pursued it if that didn't happen?

• 23:12Speaker 02

I don't think so. I don't think I would have been aware that that was possible. Although like being in the big city, I was like, oh, I want to live in a, I want to live here. I want to live in a big city.

• 23:20Amy Poehler?

Yeah, like, you know, when you look back at your life sometimes and you see like Christmas cards where people say like, you know, hope you make it to New York someday. And you think like, did you ever feel like you had that version of like, I want to get out of Louisville. I want to be, go somewhere else.

• 23:33Speaker 02

Yeah, I think like when it was happening, I think like, I mean, I really wasn't there for that long. When I think about it, like 13, 14, that's normally like before you even start getting those like.

• 23:42Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 23:43Speaker 02

So once I came back, it was just like an impossible fever. It was just like, I gotta get back there. I gotta do what I gotta, you know? And, and I had made money. I used to train horses and I would babysit. So I had like $3,000. And so I was like, I'm getting out of here.

• 24:00Amy Poehler?

  Let's get out of here.

• 24:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:01Amy Poehler?

  You trained horses?

• 24:02Speaker 02

  Mm hmm.

• 24:03Amy Poehler?

Wow. You proved my point that I feel like women and young girls that like horses usually have great hair.

• 24:10Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 24:12Amy Poehler?

Always. I don't know. I have a bunch of theories and one of them is that if you like horses, it makes your hair grow really thick.

• 24:18Speaker 02

Oh, my God. You know what? A friend of mine, every time she's on mushrooms thinks that I look like My Little Pony.

• 24:26Amy Poehler?

  You have fantastic.

• 24:27Speaker 02

This is for you, Rachel. This is for you, Rach.

• 24:31Amy Poehler?

Are you rolling right now because your mind is going to be blown?

• 24:33Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 24:35Amy Poehler?

But when I was looking at your life and career and I was kind of blown away by how much stuff happened so fast and young in the, in the years of like 19 to 22.

• 24:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:46Amy Poehler?

That was a lot. A lot in those years.

• 24:48Speaker 02

That's why I was so emotional over those skinny jeans. They were my 23 year old rag and bones.

• 24:53Amy Poehler?

Yes. And that was a tender time.

• 24:55Speaker 02

  It was.

• 24:55Amy Poehler?

Cause you were, how old, what year were you 20, 2012?

• 24:59Speaker 02

  2012.

• 25:01Amy Poehler?

Cause you did Winter's Bone, a beautiful movie, incredible performance when you were 19. Then you. Do SNL close to that time too, like the following year, maybe?

• 25:11Speaker 02

Did I? Yeah, 20. Yeah, because it was before Oscars for Silver Linings. At Winter's Bone, I remember being too young to drink. I did. But at the Oscars.

• 25:23Amy Poehler?

And what were your memories of doing SNL at that time?

• 25:26Speaker 02

  Skewed.

• 25:27Amy Poehler?

  I feel like you've, I've read, I've read.

• 25:30Speaker 02

You weren't on the cast then.

• 25:31Amy Poehler?

No, 2012. I had left in 20, um, 2008. And then by 2012, I was doing Parks and Rec.

• 25:38Speaker 02

Okay, I don't, I think I have to, I have to go back and do it again because I had walking ammonia. I was like, under a lot of pressure and doing a lot. And I was shooting one of the Hunger Games movies. I was shooting, I think, the second one while doing all of this campaign. And I would have to like fly, go to a party, shake hands, and then land and, you know, shoot, like, "Bore me." Um, but I was very tired. And so I think I was just, I remember I was also at that bad age. I don't know if other people were like this at this age, but we're like, you know, when you get, you get asked, like, can you do any impressions or anything? And I was like, "No."

• 26:11Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 26:12Speaker 02

You know, like, I don't want to be like, "And I can do this, and I can do that." I just kind of made everything like everybody else's problem. I was like, "I don't know how to do that. I can't do that."

• 26:21Amy Poehler?

Totally. I know. And, and also, I mean, I, it's, it's hard to be young and on that show. It's just hard. But your relationship to comedy, what is it like now? Do you want to make more, do more, direct more, write more?

• 26:35Speaker 02

  I would love, I, I wrote a comedy.

• 26:37Amy Poehler?

  You did?

• 26:38Speaker 02

And I would love to direct it. And I'll star in it.

• 26:40Amy Poehler?

  Oh, my God, you should.

• 26:42Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 26:43Amy Poehler?

And No Hard Feelings was great. You were hilarious in it. It's such a good movie.

• 26:47Speaker 02

Well, I did not write and direct that one. Although I guess I could tell people that I did. I always could.

• 26:53Amy Poehler?

People don't listen. They don't pay attention.

• 26:54Speaker 02

No. Um, after I wrote and directed No Hard Feelings, I, it really got me thinking.

• 27:01Speaker 02

But thank you. I had a lot of fun doing it.

• 27:03Amy Poehler?

And you want to direct as well?

• 27:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:05Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, right on.

• 27:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:06Amy Poehler?

  Great.

• 27:07Speaker 02

I mean, everybody does, you know?

• 27:08Amy Poehler?

I think that's true. Like, I feel sometimes people are not into it, but I feel like, I mean, are you finding that like, having worked now and done a lot of stuff now, that you're realizing, like, oh, I want more control in what I, what I do and how I like to work?

• 27:23Speaker 02

Yeah, but I also, I had, my first movie ever was a female director and then I, I actually ended up working with more female directors than ma- male directors. So as a teenager, it was like really, like, not formidable, formidable?

• 27:38Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, forma- formidable.

• 27:39Speaker 02

  Forming.

• 27:40Amy Poehler?

  Formidable?

• 27:41Speaker 02

It was, um, farming culture for me. So that made me like realize-

• 27:47Amy Poehler?

I gotta get this word. It's formidable, right?

• 27:49Speaker 02

  No, it's like formative?

• 27:51Amy Poehler?

  Formative.

• 27:53Speaker 02

  Informative?

• 27:55Amy Poehler?

  Well, it's a formative.

• 27:57Speaker 02

But what I mean is like-

• 27:57Amy Poehler?

  Formative experience.

• 27:58Speaker 02

Formative. Is that what it is, formative?

• 28:00Amy Poehler?

Yeah, here we go. Formative. Something that relates to formation or development, shaping and influencing something else.

• 28:06Speaker 02

That is precisely what I mean.

• 28:08Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, we did it.

• 28:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:11Speaker 02

So it was formative that I realized that that was even like possible for me to do. So I had wanted to do it since I was a teenager. So then when I went into movies in like my twenties and now, I always tell the director and then they include me and a lot of them have been really nice and like included me in the process and let me see like post and all that stuff.

• 28:28Amy Poehler?

What is, what's important for you when you work? Like, what, what's the thing you like to do? For example, like, do you feel like once I'm on set, I want to escape and just like dive in and I want some other people to handle the stuff? Do you like to, do you like the logistics of the work?

• 28:43Speaker 02

Oh, I do like the logistics.

• 28:44Amy Poehler?

You do? Like you like a call sheet and you like knowing what's gonna happen during the day?

• 28:48Speaker 02

  But I think that's like, that's a woman's brain.

• 28:50Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 28:50Speaker 02

You know, it's just, it's really, my producing partner and I have been on sets together since we were 21 and we fuck up a call sheet. I mean, we, and when I have like a friend that's gonna go do something, I'm like, send me your call sheet. I'll get you two days. Um, we just know how to make it make sense. We, it's, it's divine. So I like the logistics. I also, I need to connect and have friends immediately. Like I gotta dive in and find, you know, the camera guys, the like, I gotta find like who my, you know, people are gonna be.

• 29:23Amy Poehler?

That's so interesting. You gotta, yeah, cuz you're like, we're gonna be in-

• 29:25Speaker 02

Which is not a photo shoot.

• 29:27Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 29:28Speaker 02

Photo shoot, I don't want you to talk to me. I just want, I just want-

• 29:31Amy Poehler?

Totally agree. I, I just want it to be over as fast as possible.

• 29:36Speaker 02

And it's just, all of it's so embarrassing, you know, like, put your hand like this.

• 29:44Amy Poehler?

Or if you're considered a funny person, the worst part is they're like, we have a bunch of props.

• 29:48Speaker 02

  Oh, no.

• 29:49Amy Poehler?

  You have this in your-

• 29:50Speaker 02

We have clown shoes for you, you fucking clown. Put on the shoes, you fucking clown.

• 29:54Amy Poehler?

But it's so true. I mean, I've been in many shoots where like a chill goes down just when they're like, just, it's always a whisper. There's a bunch of fun props if you wanna play with them at any-

• 30:03Speaker 02

If you wanna play with them, like you're a baby.

• 30:05Amy Poehler?

Oh, no. It's like a giant lollipop and a rubber chicken and whatever.

• 30:09Speaker 02

Like, that's not gonna come naturally to me. Like, if you want me to pole on the rubber chicken, I will, but you have to direct me to pole on it.

• 30:16Amy Poehler?

And the other thing is like, we have a really fun idea. You have all this barbecue sauce on your face. Like, it's always, it's always like, we're going to humiliate you.

• 30:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:25Amy Poehler?

And you're gonna just, you're gonna smile your way through it. You're, you're such a good time.

• 30:29Speaker 02

Right. Oh, okay. No, mine aren't that bad.

• 30:31Amy Poehler?

I'm kind of shocked to hear that. I mean, well, I'm not shocked. I mean, obviously.

• 30:35Speaker 02

We were thinking you wouldn't wear a bra for this. And I'm like, I've had two children.

• 30:38Amy Poehler?

  And they're like, no.

• 30:39Speaker 02

They're like, but maybe. You want me to show you something? Come here. I'm gonna show you something.

• 30:47Amy Poehler?

All your pictures are you just flashing?

• 30:48Speaker 02

  Uh, yeah.

• 30:54Amy Poehler?

• 33:28Amy Poehler?

Because of good hang, we're always looking for a good hang. I have questions I want to ask you. I want your opinion about things.

• 33:34Speaker 02

  Oh, okay.

• 33:35Amy Poehler?

  I want your hot takes.

• 33:36Speaker 02

  Okay, oh, yeah. No problemo.

• 33:38Amy Poehler?

I know, you like to give hot takes.

• 33:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:41Amy Poehler?

And I want, and these are important things.

• 33:43Speaker 02

Okay. I gotta take it easy on the housewives, though. I always get, I get like...

• 33:47Amy Poehler?

Okay, I'm gonna tell you something about, I don't know that much about housewives.

• 33:49Speaker 02

Okay, no, no, no, it's fine. I mean, that's good.

• 33:51Amy Poehler?

  But you like Below Deck.

• 33:52Speaker 02

  Yeah, I do.

• 33:54Amy Poehler?

First question. If you were on Below Deck, what would you want your job to be? Which, which of the jobs?

• 34:00Speaker 02

  A stew.

• 34:01Amy Poehler?

  Chief stew?

• 34:02Speaker 02

  Well, no.

• 34:03Amy Poehler?

  No?

• 34:03Speaker 02

No, I would go into that laundry and I'd fuck that laundry up. I'd put a podcast in, I'd steam, I'd fold, I'd have a system. I'd have a color-coded system.

• 34:12Amy Poehler?

I know, you mean, people never want to go down into the laundry on Below Deck. And it's like, why? You don't have to talk to any of the people. You're there by yourself.

• 34:19Speaker 02

Yeah, I'm alone. And again, I would put one ear pod in, I'd listen to some murder, and I'd just fucking fuck that shit up. It'd be so satisfying, yeah. And also doing like, doing turn down would be one of the most satisfying things. Getting the lines in the vacuum perfectly.

• 34:35Amy Poehler?

Do you have like, are you an earth sign? What's your, what, you've got like a, um...

• 34:39Speaker 02

  I'm a Leo.

• 34:40Amy Poehler?

Oh, so, okay, so you've got, but you have a lot of grounded, you like organizing. You like straight things, straightening. Is your house neat?

• 34:49Speaker 02

Well, I mean, my, if you look at my bedside table, and then you look at my husband's bedside table, mine is an explosion. Pills everywhere. I mean, I look like I'm dying.

• 34:59Amy Poehler?

  Littered with pills.

• 35:01Speaker 02

Like, what's, what is her malady? And my husband's is like, just a bottle of water.

• 35:06Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, okay, but you like...

• 35:08Speaker 02

But I do, I get, I get satisfied once it's like time to clean up.

• 35:11Amy Poehler?

Mm, you like a good, you like a good system.

• 35:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:15Amy Poehler?

Yeah, that makes sense to me. And then, okay, another question is, do you have a nickname?

• 35:21Speaker 02

Floffen? Nitro? Boobs. Boobs Lawrence, the full government name. Um... Nitro, yeah.

• 35:35Amy Poehler?

  Where did Nitro come from?

• 35:36Speaker 02

My brothers, because I was really hyper, and they called me Nitro.

• 35:40Amy Poehler?

Um, I love that you are...

• 35:42Speaker 02

Oh, and my friends call me Ken, from the Barbie movie, because I'm just Ken. I think it's their way of calling me stupid. And so whenever I ask them, he's stupid, they're like, she's just Ken.

• 35:54Amy Poehler?

  You have two older brothers.

• 35:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:57Amy Poehler?

And what was it like growing up like with older brothers? What do you feel like there's a thing that happens to? Like, what's the good part about having two older brothers? Is there one?

• 36:08Speaker 02

They're, I mean, I mean, they were great. They were really protective. You know, not with themselves. They're like, you know.

• 36:16Amy Poehler?

I mean, did it make you like tough?

• 36:18Speaker 02

Yeah, I think it made me tough.

• 36:19Amy Poehler?

As the mother of sons, I will say, and you're gonna eventually notice this too. Because you had brothers, the way boys and young boys talk to each other won't be as shocking. Like, you're gonna, you're used to it.

• 36:32Speaker 02

No, in fact, I find myself doing.

• 36:35Amy Poehler?

I do too, and that's kind of a love language. Like, when I've noticed the way that you interact with people that you work with, it also feels like you turn people into brothers. Like, feels like.

• 36:43Speaker 02

  I think I do.

• 36:44Amy Poehler?

Josh Hutcherson was a brother. It feels like Robert Pattinson feels like a brother.

• 36:48Speaker 02

  Yeah, oh, you're so right.

• 36:50Amy Poehler?

  Okay, Doritos, your opinion?

• 36:53Speaker 02

  Love them.

• 36:53Amy Poehler?

  Me too.

• 36:54Speaker 02

Cool. I mean, but now I'm like older and I'm like, think about like what in it? I mean, not if I'm like on a plane. If I'm on a plane and I see him, I'm gonna, those Doritos gonna get eight. But.

• 37:03Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 37:04Speaker 02

But I do think about it more.

• 37:06Amy Poehler?

Okay, do you do any impressions?

• 37:08Speaker 02

No. Do I? No, I don't think so.

• 37:13Amy Poehler?

Hmm, I feel like I've seen you do, I feel like I've seen you do, um, Real Housewives impressions, but no.

• 37:20Speaker 02

  I have to text.

• 37:21Amy Poehler?

Or do you want to do the game that we do? We do, we do this game at SNL, which is, it's like, you like, do it or die. And it's basically, um, you don't have to do it, and we can cut it, but it's really fun to play, and you can do it to me too, where you just give someone a name, and they have to do it, have to do an impression in 10 seconds. It's, doesn't have to be good. But if you don't do it, you'll die. Okay, you ready? And Robert De Niro?

• 37:45Speaker 02

  Me?

• 37:49Amy Poehler?

You did it! You did die!

• 37:53Speaker 02

  Me?

• 37:57Speaker 02

I would love to see a recut version of him not saying, are you talking to me? But just going, me?

• 38:07Amy Poehler?

I mean, I, there's, I, I, what, what's the coldest day you've ever had on set? And the hottest day you've ever had on set?

• 38:14Speaker 02

Coldest was, uh, I mean, I know, like, the real answer was, like, you know, one of the Hunger Games movies where I was, like, on a frozen lake, but it was actually in Calgary doing Die My Love. Because it was August, so it was supposed to be warm. And so there wasn't, like, there weren't, like, warming coats or anything. And I, you know, I'm just in, like, a T-shirt or whatever. And so that was the coldest. That, that, like, broke my heart, like, made me want to cry.

• 38:39Amy Poehler?

This proves my theory that Marty Short, you did cry?

• 38:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, I did.

• 38:42Amy Poehler?

  Because you were so cold?

• 38:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:43Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Um, this proves my theory that I said to Marty Short, like, it's never warm in Canada. Never.

• 38:48Speaker 02

  Never.

• 38:49Amy Poehler?

And it's always fucking freezing. And it's freezing in August, always.

• 38:52Speaker 02

  I know.

• 38:52Amy Poehler?

And Canadians pretend, like, oh, we had a really nice day. And it's like, you did not have a nice day.

• 38:55Speaker 02

  No, you were very cold.

• 38:57Amy Poehler?

It's really cold. When you're cold and you cry on set?

• 39:00Speaker 02

Why didn't cry on set? I cried in my trailer to Justine. She was like, what's wrong? And I was like, I'm just feeling really cold. But I was pregnant, I just remembered.

• 39:10Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 39:10Speaker 02

Yeah, of course I cried. I probably cried every day.

• 39:14Amy Poehler?

Yeah, that movie seems like there was a lot of tears. Buck, that's intense.

• 39:17Speaker 02

It was fun, it was fun to, like, play somebody that's, like...

• 39:19Amy Poehler?

Fun, but you have to do some stuff, man. You have to go for it in some movies. And I'm like, this is hard. Screaming all day, crying all day.

• 39:27Speaker 02

  All day.

• 39:28Amy Poehler?

Woo! Hard, but you're so blessed.

• 39:30Speaker 02

  I'm blessed. Me?

• 39:33Amy Poehler?

  A hot...

• 39:33Speaker 02

  Blessed.

• 39:35Amy Poehler?

  I'm talking to...

• 39:36Speaker 02

Me? That's the last one over here!

• 39:40Amy Poehler?

  Hottest day on set?

• 39:42Speaker 02

  Hottest day on set?

• 39:44Amy Poehler?

Hottest time you, like, you remember working and it was really hot?

• 39:47Speaker 02

The, no, I know what you mean. I answered the first one, I obviously get the con, I put the context together.

• 39:54Amy Poehler?

I thought maybe you were thinking about something more erotic.

• 39:56Speaker 02

Um, I think it was the first Hunger Games, yeah, the first Hunger Games, we were shooting in, uh, North Carolina. It was humid and we had those jackets on.

• 40:06Amy Poehler?

Oh, yeah. And you had to run in those jackets, too.

• 40:08Speaker 02

And running in the jackets, yeah.

• 40:10Amy Poehler?

Speaking of running, I feel like my next question, like what I love about you is how you don't feel like you're competitive with other actresses and you really wish for other people's success, but in a foot race, who would win between you and Emma Stone?

• 40:24Speaker 02

She's got like really tiny bones and I just have very thick bones. So what does that mean for running? That's hard to know because smaller, thinner bones.

• 40:34Amy Poehler?

You might be faster out of the gate.

• 40:37Speaker 02

I think, I think if I like got a clock in, I'd knock her out in like two seconds.

• 40:41Amy Poehler?

Oh, 100%. No offense, Emma, if you're listening, but there's, you would definitely knock her out with one punch.

• 40:47Speaker 02

I mean, I could take her out. If it was like a fight or a wrestle, she'd stun me. But running, I don't know because I don't know if her hollow bones give her an advantage.

• 40:57Amy Poehler?

  Yeah. Karaoke, what's your, what's your go-to?

• 41:00Speaker 02

Any man of mine, Shania Twain.

• 41:02Amy Poehler?

Hmm, I don't know that one. This is where your Kentucky comes in.

• 41:06Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 41:07Amy Poehler?

  Any man of mine.

• 41:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:15Amy Poehler?

Look how cute she is. I still don't know this.

• 41:20Speaker 02

Oh, but you like it, right?

• 41:21Amy Poehler?

  Do you do the woo?

• 41:22Speaker 02

  Yeah, of course.

• 41:26Speaker 02

This is what I want my moose. Any man of mine better be fried up, man. Even when I'm ugly, he still better love me. And I can be late for a date, that's fine, but he better be on time. Any man of mine say it's just right when I'm last year's dress is just a little too tight. And anything I bet he should say better be okay when I had a bad hair day.

• 41:55Speaker 02

And if I change my mind a million times, I want to hear him say, yeah, yeah, yeah, like I thought, well, any man of mine.

• 42:13Speaker 02

  What's the name?

• 42:14Amy Poehler?

  Oh my God, you're good.

• 42:16Speaker 02

  I know, really good.

• 42:21Speaker 02

  Very good.

• 42:22Amy Poehler?

  I love karaoke too.

• 42:24Speaker 02

  Yeah, and I'm on key.

• 42:25Amy Poehler?

  You were on key?

• 42:26Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:27Amy Poehler?

Did you ever sing? Did you ever? You're a good singer.

• 42:29Speaker 02

  No.

• 42:30Amy Poehler?

That's not true. I just heard it. I just heard it.

• 42:33Speaker 02

I know you did. I know you heard it. Okay, anyway, moving on.

• 42:36Amy Poehler?

All right, all right. Have you ever been awarded a middle or high school superlative? Middle school or high school superlative?

• 42:42Speaker 02

  Most talkative.

• 42:44Amy Poehler?

  Most talkative?

• 42:44Speaker 02

Two years in a row. Third year I had left. I was in New York.

• 42:48Amy Poehler?

You gotta get out of here.

• 42:49Speaker 02

Yeah. Chalked my way right out of the building.

• 42:52Amy Poehler?

  Most talkative.

• 42:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:54Amy Poehler?

Most talkative and most, for me, the three that were like cousins were talkative, like class clown and mischievous. Like, they all were like together.

• 43:04Speaker 02

We didn't have those. We had talkative best smile, because I remember not getting that one.

• 43:10Amy Poehler?

You were going for that one?

• 43:11Speaker 02

I'm like, no, I was going for Miss Camer.

• 43:13Amy Poehler?

  Miss what?

• 43:14Speaker 02

Miss Camer. Camer is the name of the school. This is like the rural drer, the drer.

• 43:22Amy Poehler?

I thought you were saying Miss Camera.

• 43:24Speaker 02

Camera Middle School was the name. K-A-M-M-E-R-E-R. Camera Middle School. That's where I went to school.

• 43:33Amy Poehler?

Okay, we kind of went over this already. Horses, yes or no?

• 43:37Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 43:38Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 43:40Amy Poehler?

Do you do that crazy thing where you insist on doing your own stunts?

• 43:43Speaker 02

  No.

• 43:44Amy Poehler?

  And have you ever?

• 43:45Speaker 02

  No.

• 43:46Amy Poehler?

Okay, great. Just keep that up.

• 43:48Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 43:50Amy Poehler?

Best album or song of the year? What are you listening to that you love?

• 43:54Speaker 02

Oh, I don't know any current music. I, once they got rid of the radio, I really, I didn't know. I mean, how am I supposed to

• 44:01Amy Poehler?

  What do you mean?

• 44:02Speaker 02

  Know what's coming out?

• 44:03Amy Poehler?

  From your phone?

• 44:05Speaker 02

But what part of my phone? My phone has podcasts. I mean playlists.

• 44:08Amy Poehler?

Do you not listen to, do you not?

• 44:09Speaker 02

I don't listen to like, how do you listen to live music on your phone?

• 44:13Amy Poehler?

Honestly, I usually learn about new music from Instagram or TikTok that I then go and buy.

• 44:20Speaker 02

The Lily Allen, I don't know when this podcast is coming out in the future, but the Lily Allen album dropped a couple of weeks ago and woo wee. Oh, I love it.

• 44:29Amy Poehler?

  So good.

• 44:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 44:30Amy Poehler?

  So good.

• 44:31Speaker 02

I didn't know it was a pussy palace.

• 44:33Amy Poehler?

  And Monaga Mummy.

• 44:36Speaker 02

  Monaga Mummy, so good.

• 44:38Amy Poehler?

  So good.

• 44:38Speaker 02

Yeah, and Tennis. Tennis might be my favorite one from the album.

• 44:41Amy Poehler?

  She's so, so talented.

• 44:42Speaker 02

  She's so talented.

• 44:43Amy Poehler?

I feel like this, I was just saying to someone, like, I feel like the pop stars, like, they're just, the female pop, like, they're just dominating.

• 44:50Speaker 02

  I know.

• 44:50Amy Poehler?

  In every area of music.

• 44:51Speaker 02

I know, Charli XCX is so cool.

• 44:54Amy Poehler?

I know. Do you know her? I feel like you guys would hang out.

• 44:57Speaker 02

I don't know her. I mean, would she hang out with me? I don't know. I don't know.

• 45:01Amy Poehler?

  You just call her up.

• 45:02Speaker 02

  I would, yeah, well.

• 45:04Amy Poehler?

Okay, so let me talk about your movie, Die My Love, which looks amazing. And you, once again, like, if I haven't made it clear, you're so good at acting.

• 45:14Speaker 02

Thank you very much. That's really, really nice.

• 45:16Amy Poehler?

And you really are doing the thing you're meant to do.

• 45:18Speaker 02

  Thank you, yeah.

• 45:19Amy Poehler?

  And do you feel that?

• 45:20Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 45:21Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 45:21Speaker 02

  Yeah, definitely.

• 45:22Amy Poehler?

Do you feel like, was there ever a time when you thought, there's anything else I would want to do? It just feels like.

• 45:27Speaker 02

Every time I'm on a press tour.

• 45:31Amy Poehler?

You're like, you know what? Yes.

• 45:36Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 45:37Speaker 02

It just doesn't feel, like, how does anybody, like, that's so.

• 45:41Amy Poehler?

But do you feel like when you get on set, do you feel, or when you're work, when you're really in the work, you feel super relaxed?

• 45:47Speaker 02

  Yeah, totally.

• 45:48Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 45:49Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, it's like, it's hard and you're tired and, you know, you'd rather be like home.

• 45:54Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 45:54Speaker 02

  But, um.

• 45:56Amy Poehler?

  But you're into it.

• 45:57Speaker 02

Yeah, so in good, I love it.

• 45:59Amy Poehler?

This process seemed really cool. Like, Lynn and you and Robert seem like you guys. Lynn Ramsey, the director, it seemed like you three had some kind of way of working that seemed really creative and cool. Was that true?

• 46:09Speaker 02

Yeah, it was cool, because Lynn and I talked about it for like years before we like really had a script. So I felt like we had had so many conversations like about this person and about her circumstances that by the time we got there, there was just like a lot of freedom. It was like kind of scary, you know, like, like an improv-y type of situation where it's just like, go. It's kind of like, huh, under what terms? The circumstances, but, but it was really, really fulfilling. It was like challenging in a nice way.

• 46:42Amy Poehler?

And you're playing somebody who's kind of like descending into

• 46:47Speaker 02

  Madness.

• 46:48Amy Poehler?

Madness. And do you, when you, when you're playing something like that, do you track? You know, are you always trying to figure out like, where is she at in this scene? Like, how far has she gone?

• 47:01Speaker 02

Kind of. I thought that I was gonna have to do that a little bit more, but it ended up just being like finding the truth of what she was saying, like in the moment, which I think sometimes it didn't end up being as, I don't know, like crazy as I thought, but the costumes helped with that because I think they like move from a different place. And so they, at first, she dresses really differently and sticks out. And then as she stays there, she starts to blend in with the community. And so that was a good way that I could mark kind of like where the head, my headspace would be.

• 47:36Amy Poehler?

That's a, that's a very cool idea, right? That you're realizing, I'm wearing this, this pair of pants, which reminds me that I'm in this mental space.

• 47:45Speaker 02

Been here for like eight months.

• 47:47Amy Poehler?

And it's kind of getting back full circle to what we're talking about, about clothes. Like, I do feel like clothes, like, there are certain outfits, for example, that I wore during COVID that I cannot wear again. Because they just

• 47:57Speaker 02

Oh, because of COVID. Oh, it's like when you wear like work pants and then they get ruined because they're work pants.

• 48:02Amy Poehler?

Or you get broken up with in a shirt and you can never wear it again. Like clothes hold some memory.

• 48:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:08Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 48:08Speaker 02

But you gotta just get them right out of there.

• 48:11Amy Poehler?

You gotta get them out of there.

• 48:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:13Amy Poehler?

Okay, we've mentioned your producing partner, Justine, a few times.

• 48:17Speaker 02

  We have?

• 48:18Amy Poehler?

  You have.

• 48:19Speaker 02

  Oh, really?

• 48:19Amy Poehler?

  You've mentioned her twice.

• 48:20Speaker 02

  Oh, my god.

• 48:21Amy Poehler?

Yeah, and she's like your best, like, a really long time friend. Tell us about her.

• 48:26Speaker 02

She's, yeah, my best friend. We met right after I did Winter's Bone, so I was 19.

• 48:34Speaker 02

And we fell in love with movies. We, we, like, read together. We, like, discovered Walt Whitman together. Um, so it was like, so we, like, I think our, like, consciousness, like, woke up together. And, and we were like, and she was always like, she was my, like, roommate when I started getting really famous. And she was really, I think I credit her a lot with, like, why I didn't start, kind of, getting too big for my britches or anything, because everything was really real with her.

• 49:06Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 49:08Speaker 02

And she's just, I'm really lucky to have her. I feel really, um, I love her a lot. I feel loved by her. I trust her completely. I trust her taste. She's also a really hard worker. She likes hard work. So, um, yeah, I'm really lucky. I wouldn't normally recommend working with friends, but in our case, it's worked out nicely.

• 49:28Amy Poehler?

You guys started a production company, Excellent Cadaver.

• 49:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:32Amy Poehler?

  You produced-

• 49:33Speaker 02

About six or seven years ago.

• 49:34Amy Poehler?

A bunch, you, you've been working together for a long time, and your company's produced a bunch of amazing films, including Causeway, which I think was one of my most favorite things I've ever seen you do.

• 49:45Speaker 02

  Oh, my god, thank you.

• 49:46Amy Poehler?

I love that movie. So good.

• 49:47Speaker 02

  Thanks.

• 49:48Amy Poehler?

Um, for people who haven't seen it, check it out. It's you and-

• 49:50Speaker 02

  Brian Tyree Henry.

• 49:51Amy Poehler?

Brian Tyree Henry, incredible, um, from Atlanta and many other things, incredible actor. And you two play vets who are kind of physically and spiritually struggling, um, and back home. And it's such, it's such a good, and Lila is an amazing-

• 50:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 50:08Amy Poehler?

  Director.

• 50:08Speaker 02

Lila Newgbauer. It was her first film, but she's a big theater director, and she's great. Sorry, the inside of my ear is itchy. This is gross.

• 50:15Amy Poehler?

No, but you know itchy ears are a sign of perimenopause, so congrats.

• 50:22Amy Poehler?

  Congrats, babe.

• 50:23Speaker 02

  We'll cut that.

• 50:24Amy Poehler?

Oh, no, we'll double that. We're gonna make it really long.

• 50:28Speaker 02

Yeah. It's just like the preview.

• 50:30Amy Poehler?

We're gonna underline it with volume.

• 50:33Speaker 02

We're here with perimenopause sufferer Jennifer Lawrence.

• 50:36Amy Poehler?

I always thought that would be a good drag name, by the way, is perimenopause.

• 50:39Speaker 02

Oh, it is. That really is.

• 50:42Amy Poehler?

But anyway, we talked to Justine.

• 50:44Speaker 02

  You did?

• 50:45Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 50:46Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 50:46Amy Poehler?

Because we do this thing where we have people talk about our guests and like talk well behind their back and give me a question to ask them. And I talked to Justine today.

• 50:54Speaker 02

I should have known. I listened to this podcast. I don't know why I'm so like beside my, I'm surprised. What did she say?

• 51:01Amy Poehler?

She had a really good question, I thought, which was basically like, what do you want to talk about? She was like, ask Jen what she wants to talk about and what she's sick of talking about.

• 51:12Speaker 02

  Oh, that's nice. Thanks, girl.

• 51:13Amy Poehler?

I thought that was a good friend question.

• 51:15Speaker 02

I'm sick of talking about the movie.

• 51:17Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, great.

• 51:17Speaker 02

  Um.

• 51:19Amy Poehler?

We won't. We're gonna cut it out.

• 51:20Speaker 02

And I want to talk about...

• 51:24Amy Poehler?

What have we not talked about that you want to talk about?

• 51:27Speaker 02

Oh, I think we've covered, we've talked about things that I would have never known that I wanted to talk about, that I wanted to talk about.

• 51:32Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 51:33Speaker 02

  So, I don't, I can't answer it.

• 51:35Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 51:36Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 51:43Amy Poehler?

What do you listen to, watch? What do you, what makes you laugh? How do you get yourself up, up the elevator?

• 51:50Speaker 02

  Well, you make me laugh.

• 51:51Amy Poehler?

  Thank you.

• 51:52Speaker 02

Um, you're on my algorithm a lot, and you and Tina. And you guys hosted a Golden Globes that I was at, and you were the funniest people I've ever seen in my life. You made me proud to be a woman.

• 52:07Amy Poehler?

Was that when we said that, um, American Hustle was the title of, the original title was Explosion at the Wig Factory?

• 52:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:20Amy Poehler?

But what, okay, but what do you listen to, read, watch? Who makes you laugh?

• 52:25Speaker 02

  Um, I watch Veep.

• 52:29Amy Poehler?

Oh, yeah. So we interviewed Julia recently.

• 52:32Speaker 02

  You did?

• 52:33Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 52:33Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 52:34Amy Poehler?

I called her the LeBron James of comedy.

• 52:36Speaker 02

  She is.

• 52:37Amy Poehler?

She's won so many championships with different teams and she rejected that.

• 52:42Amy Poehler?

She wouldn't, she wouldn't accept that title.

• 52:43Speaker 02

That's so her. I mean, what if she was like, "Thank you, I know." Um, yeah, she's, she's a hero of mine. Um, I love Modern Family.

• 52:53Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 52:54Speaker 02

  Um.

• 52:55Amy Poehler?

Are you like a true millennial and you watch things that you've watched before just to like go to sleep?

• 52:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 53:00Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 53:00Speaker 02

No, I'm Gen Z and I, I don't know what they do. I use all my clothes online.

• 53:04Amy Poehler?

You kiss your robot and sell your clothes.

• 53:06Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 53:07Amy Poehler?

Well, um, I mean, I feel like we covered so much good stuff.

• 53:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 53:11Amy Poehler?

I feel great about this interview.

• 53:12Speaker 02

I do too. I can't wait for it to come out. I'm gonna be the first to watch it.

• 53:19Amy Poehler?

Last question is, I know you do like a lot of reality TV. What show would you want to be on of all of them?

• 53:26Speaker 02

Well, I mean, want to be on them? I guess The Kardashians. Cause then I'd be like on a private plane going to like Fiji. Like.

• 53:35Amy Poehler?

  That's true.

• 53:35Speaker 02

Cause, cause the other ones, like, they're not, they're not like having a good.

• 53:40Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, like there's no comfort.

• 53:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 53:42Amy Poehler?

You're right. You're right. Maybe, maybe, yeah, cause you just mentioned Amazing Race and I feel like sometimes there's like a little part of me that thinks I would be good.

• 53:50Speaker 02

I tried to go on Bear Grylls.

• 53:52Amy Poehler?

  You did?

• 53:53Speaker 02

  Why?

• 53:54Amy Poehler?

  And they wouldn't let you?

• 53:55Speaker 02

No, I, what happened was I was like, I was determined to do it. Um, I ended up getting pregnant.

• 54:01Amy Poehler?

  Ah.

• 54:01Speaker 02

And I, but I was still gonna do it.

• 54:03Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 54:03Speaker 02

And then I texted my OBGYN and I was like, "Hey, so I'm gonna be doing Bear Grylls on like the 17th. Is there anything I should like tell them?" And he was like, "You're not doing that." I was like, "Oh," and then I just, after.

• 54:15Amy Poehler?

Do you know the show Alone? Have you, are you?

• 54:16Speaker 02

I love Alone. Oh my God, building the, the fortresses, building the cabins. Ah, isn't building the houses, isn't that the part that you want to do the most?

• 54:27Amy Poehler?

  And if I may.

• 54:30Amy Poehler?

The amount of energy that people build on their houses is fascinating because some people, you're like, you're gonna get way too tired. This house is too nice.

• 54:37Speaker 02

Yeah, they're burning a lot of calories.

• 54:38Amy Poehler?

  Burning a lot of calories.

• 54:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 54:40Amy Poehler?

Other people, it's like, you're sleeping under a tarp for six weeks?

• 54:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 54:44Amy Poehler?

Like, you gotta get your house together. Like, what's wrong with you?

• 54:46Speaker 02

  I know.

• 54:47Amy Poehler?

The in-between of that is fascinating to me.

• 54:48Speaker 02

Yeah, the bugs, phew. It was really satisfying when you're a guy, white man, didn't bring a firestarter because he was just like, I can do it.

• 54:58Amy Poehler?

I saw that one. That was really, it's like, I got it.

• 55:00Speaker 02

  Yeah, that was really satisfying.

• 55:01Amy Poehler?

  Then they changed it.

• 55:02Speaker 02

  Schadenfreude, if you will.

• 55:03Amy Poehler?

I also love the men that come on really strong and immediately like twist an ankle.

• 55:11Speaker 02

  Yeah, I do love that.

• 55:12Amy Poehler?

Or the other thing that takes them down, their stomachs.

• 55:16Speaker 02

I'm surprised that they don't have them just go with Cipro, that like Cipro isn't just like in there.

• 55:21Amy Poehler?

  Maybe they do. Maybe they...

• 55:22Speaker 02

I don't think they do. It doesn't seem like they do.

• 55:25Amy Poehler?

  The diarrhea takes everybody down.

• 55:27Speaker 02

  They get diarrhea immediately.

• 55:29Amy Poehler?

Immediately. I need diarrhea immediately. And men are just, they cannot handle when they don't feel good. They just, everything falls the fuck apart.

• 55:41Speaker 02

  No.

• 55:41Amy Poehler?

So they're just like, I don't feel good. And you're like, see you later, dude. And the women are just weaving baskets and staying there for 100 days.

• 55:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 55:49Amy Poehler?

  Anyway, Jennifer Lawrence.

• 55:50Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 55:51Amy Poehler?

  Thank you for coming.

• 55:52Speaker 02

  Thank you for having me.

• 55:53Amy Poehler?

Thank you for spending time here today.

• 55:55Speaker 02

I think if any, I've overstayed my welcome.

• 55:57Amy Poehler?

If you want any food from the back...

• 55:58Speaker 02

What if I just grabbed your favorite and just grabbed the soup up like, and was like, thank you, guys.

• 56:04Amy Poehler?

Thank you so much, Jennifer Lawrence. That was so fun. And thanks for being here. And you know, for this polar plunge, I always like to dig a little deeper on something that we spoke of in the podcast. And I would just highly recommend that you watch Causeway. It's such a great film. Jennifer is so good in it. Brian Tyree Henry is so good in it. Incredible actor, directed by Lila Noigabaur. And it's just really, really good. It's just a, I don't know. I just loved it. I think you will too. Check it out. Thank you for listening. Please come back soon. Bye.
