• 0:05George Kamel?

Today, we're talking about the Death Box. And no, that's not the name of an undiscovered emo rock band. And yes, it has to do with you and your money. If I was in a coma for six months, once I saw the hospital bill, I would die again. I swear, if I have a bad quality photo in that frame, I will come back from the grave.

• 0:21Rachel Cruze?

Have you ever preclaimed something from my relatives' house long before they die?

• 0:31Rachel Cruze?

  Hey, guys, I'm Rachel Cruz.

• 0:33George Kamel?

  I'm George Kamel.

• 0:35Rachel Cruze?

And this is Smart Money Happy Hour.

• 0:43Rachel Cruze?

Well, this is the show where two friends who have been money experts talk about what you're talking about. Everything from pop culture, current events, and money.

• 0:49George Kamel?

And before we get to the hot content you came here for, let's talk about what we're sipping on. This is called a Night King.

• 0:56Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, well, hey, King.

• 0:58George Kamel?

  Spooky.

• 0:58Rachel Cruze?

  Night King.

• 1:00George Kamel?

  We love a king.

• 1:01Rachel Cruze?

  We do love a king.

• 1:02George Kamel?

We're gonna give you the rating and reveal the cost per glass at the end of the episode. So stick around for that. But Halloween is upon us, and we are here to gently remind you that we are all going to die.

• 1:15Rachel Cruze?

Thanks, George. And it reminds me of Kourtney Kardashian when Kim loses her earring. And she's like, Cam, there's people dying everywhere.

• 1:23George Kamel?

  That's a great impression.

• 1:24Rachel Cruze?

But do you like our outfits, too? We're very much like in the theme of Halloween.

• 1:28George Kamel?

  Mourning.

• 1:28Rachel Cruze?

A little mourning action, because we are gonna talk about death. Yay!

• 1:34George Kamel?

I was recently at a funeral, so I had to buy a new suit. Didn't fit in the old ones.

• 1:38Rachel Cruze?

  May I ask who passed?

• 1:39George Kamel?

  Grandma.

• 1:40Rachel Cruze?

Your grandmother passed away, George, when? Recently?

• 1:43George Kamel?

Yeah, just a few months ago.

• 1:44Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, I'm sorry.

• 1:45George Kamel?

At the time of this recording.

• 1:46Rachel Cruze?

  Okay, okay, yeah.

• 1:47George Kamel?

Yeah, but she had a great full life.

• 1:49Rachel Cruze?

  How old was she?

• 1:50George Kamel?

She was, uh, 94 or something?

• 1:52Rachel Cruze?

  That's a great...

• 1:53George Kamel?

  93?

• 1:54Rachel Cruze?

  Great genes you're gonna get.

• 1:55George Kamel?

  I hope so.

• 1:56Rachel Cruze?

  That's good.

• 1:56George Kamel?

And Whitney side, both, grandpa, like 99, grandma, 98. So this bodes well.

• 2:02Rachel Cruze?

Yes, y'all are gonna do great in life.

• 2:04George Kamel?

  Thank you for that.

• 2:05Rachel Cruze?

You're not gonna have to worry about this episode.

• 2:06George Kamel?

I have heard short people live longer, so take that, guys who are six feet tall.

• 2:11Rachel Cruze?

Really? Because your body just doesn't have to, like, do as much?

• 2:14George Kamel?

I think it's like less strain.

• 2:15Rachel Cruze?

  Stuff?

• 2:15George Kamel?

Yeah, less inflatable, you know, dealership guy.

• 2:18Rachel Cruze?

When you think about, like, yeah, like, your heart pumps blood, and that's a long way to go. But when you're short, you don't have to travel that much.

• 2:25George Kamel?

That has to be the science behind it.

• 2:27Rachel Cruze?

  That's literally what I thought.

• 2:28George Kamel?

That has to be it. So to all my short kings out there, no, you will live a good, long, full life.

• 2:34Rachel Cruze?

Oh my gosh, I am so, so glad.

• 2:36George Kamel?

Well, I've thought of a lot about death as I became a dad because it just makes you take stock and go like, okay, is my family gonna be okay?

• 2:43Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, I'm responsible now, not just for me.

• 2:45George Kamel?

Yeah, the grown woman can hopefully take care of herself. She's got term life insurance, but there's so much else I gotta think about now with Wills and who's gonna take care of the baby and the dogs. So I've been thinking about this more and more and Whitney was very impressed with me most recently when I created a little game plan. I just created a document of like, here's all the accounts you need to know about. Here's the logins, here's the numbers, here's how much is in what, here's who to contact, here's the website. And I mean, she was flabbergasted.

• 3:13Rachel Cruze?

Oh, I bet she loved you more after that, yes.

• 3:15George Kamel?

It was, dare I say, romantic.

• 3:17Rachel Cruze?

Yes, hey, I'm not kidding to know things are like taken care of and knowing what to do if something or when something happens. It is, it's a big deal. Okay, we've talked about funerals, your, our funerals on this show before, I think. You, do you remember wanting a Costco casket?

• 3:32George Kamel?

  Yes, I still do.

• 3:34Rachel Cruze?

  You still do.

• 3:35George Kamel?

And I find out, this is big because a lot of people from funeral homes got mad at me. Because I think I said like funeral homes are a scam and a lot of good people out there running funeral homes were like, no, we are good people. This is not indeed a scam.

• 3:46Rachel Cruze?

  I believe that.

• 3:47George Kamel?

  We are providing a service.

• 3:48Rachel Cruze?

  For sure.

• 3:49George Kamel?

There's a lot involved, so I get that. But they said that they will like price match the Costco casket. So even on my, in my dying deathbed casket.

• 4:00Rachel Cruze?

You're still gonna get a deal, George.

• 4:01George Kamel?

I want a deal, I want to be frugal on the way out, baby. My family's not gonna overpay for that casket.

• 4:06Rachel Cruze?

Oh my gosh, have you thought about your funeral? Are there things you like?

• 4:10George Kamel?

I have more and more because I want it to be fun. And so I don't know if I want like maybe a roast, like if you show up, I want at least 10 people to get up there and like roast me.

• 4:19Rachel Cruze?

  I love that.

• 4:20George Kamel?

  Don't say anything nice.

• 4:21Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 4:22George Kamel?

  You can't.

• 4:22Rachel Cruze?

You know, a funny funeral would be like great. Do you know what I mean? Like when you can have the levity, like that is a gift. I think that's great.

• 4:29George Kamel?

Can I tell you, on the way into my grandma's funeral, we got stuck, just like a line of traffic.

• 4:33Rachel Cruze?

  Okay.

• 4:34George Kamel?

  Totally stopped.

• 4:34Rachel Cruze?

I was like stuck in the doorway, what do you mean?

• 4:36George Kamel?

Turns out, there was another funeral happening and it was a black funeral and it was like a party and the song that they were playing was "Every Breath You Take." "Every move you make, I'll be watching you." And I was like, wait, is this what like grandma wanted to be the final song? Like, why are they playing this?

• 4:56George Kamel?

Because I was like, this is either super hilarious or super creepy.

• 4:58Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 4:59George Kamel?

  But that's

• 4:59Rachel Cruze?

  Or so great.

• 5:00George Kamel?

  Or wonderful.

• 5:01Rachel Cruze?

  Because it's right there.

• 5:02George Kamel?

So I might steal that idea and play that song at my funeral.

• 5:05Rachel Cruze?

That is so, I like a roast. That's funny. It's very self-aware. That's very you.

• 5:09George Kamel?

  Thank you.

• 5:10Rachel Cruze?

I saw this funny video on Instagram the other day and it was this girl talking about, uh, this is so bad. She was like, you know, like on all the Dateline 2020s, like someone gets murdered and they like, and the friends are on screen and like, she was just so wonderful. She would walk in and brighten up her room. Like everyone wanted to be her friend. She's like, don't say about that about me. We all know it's not true. I got two friends. It's all I like. And I'm not, I'm not that happy. So don't be lying on Dateline if I ever get murdered or something.

• 5:35George Kamel?

  Catch you lying on Dateline.

• 5:36Rachel Cruze?

I don't know why. Maybe loud. I was like, that's so funny. Very self-aware. So I think about that for you. Mine?

• 5:41George Kamel?

  I definitely don't buy that.

• 5:41Rachel Cruze?

Make sure my nails are done.

• 5:42George Kamel?

Oh, okay. What color are we going with?

• 5:44Rachel Cruze?

  All I ask.

• 5:44George Kamel?

  Can I guess?

• 5:45Rachel Cruze?

Let's just go like, let's go a little neutral.

• 5:47George Kamel?

  Funny bunny.

• 5:50Rachel Cruze?

  George. I'll take it.

• 5:52George Kamel?

  What can I say?

• 5:53Rachel Cruze?

I was about to say a little pink and that's it.

• 5:56George Kamel?

I think funny bunny is the right tone.

• 5:58Rachel Cruze?

  Funny bunny from OPI.

• 6:01George Kamel?

I don't know what to tell you.

• 6:03Rachel Cruze?

  I hope Wendy.

• 6:04George Kamel?

But like, yeah, I don't know.

• 6:04Rachel Cruze?

God, tell me it's your wife.

• 6:05George Kamel?

I don't know a single other nail color, but yes, my wife, my mother-in-law, like

• 6:09Rachel Cruze?

  Bunny bunny.

• 6:09George Kamel?

If they're getting their nails done, it's funny bunny.

• 6:11Rachel Cruze?

It is, it is that. Oh my gosh, that is so funny. Yeah.

• 6:14George Kamel?

  There you go, guys.

• 6:15Rachel Cruze?

Anyways, that'll be my thing. Get my nails done. And then, yeah, I think a color theme would be fun. When I went to the Backstreet Boys a few months ago, everyone wore whites and there's something like really uniting to like be in the same color as everybody.

• 6:29George Kamel?

  Like a team spirit award?

• 6:30Rachel Cruze?

Maybe I should like throw out a color. I do love black, but I feel like that's like a little so typical, right? Like what's something that kind of like throws everyone off?

• 6:38George Kamel?

I don't know. Just guys in white suits does not.

• 6:40Rachel Cruze?

I'm not going white. No, like a color, but I want everyone to wear the same color. How fun would that be?

• 6:44George Kamel?

I do like that. What about like, we're going jewel tones?

• 6:47Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, that's good. I love a jewel tone. A winter jewel tone, you know? Like give them a season.

• 6:53George Kamel?

I guess it depends on when you die.

• 6:54Rachel Cruze?

Depending on when I die. That's the color season everyone's gonna wear in my funeral. That's so smart, George.

• 6:59George Kamel?

  I love this.

• 7:00Rachel Cruze?

  We're very on trends.

• 7:01George Kamel?

Oh, I need to tell you about, I don't know if I ever told you about this.

• 7:04Rachel Cruze?

  What?

• 7:05George Kamel?

The Photoshop debacle with grandma. So the family, they're like, hey, we needed a good picture of grandma to put in the frame, you know, next to the casket. So I go, I got plenty of gra- she was at my wedding. It was the last like high quality photo back from 2018. And I went, I got you guys. I couldn't find one where she wasn't like with someone. So like I have my arm around her, you know? So I was like, can I Photoshop myself out? So I'm sitting there attempting to Photoshop grandma, sending the group chat with the family and the sons and daughters.

• 7:36Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 7:36George Kamel?

And they're all displeased with my Photoshop job. And I'm lopping arms off left and right for grandma. I'm phoning a friend who knows Photoshop better than me. Finally, my buddy Taryn comes through here at Ramsey.

• 7:46Rachel Cruze?

  Okay.

• 7:47George Kamel?

Does an incredible job making grandma look like it was a solo photo. Changed the background, like made it look perfect.

• 7:52Rachel Cruze?

  Wow.

• 7:53George Kamel?

Guess what? They cropped it to where you couldn't even see her arms.

• 7:57Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, no.

• 7:58George Kamel?

So I went, I got to the funeral and I was instantly enraged. I went, all my hard work for you to crop it at the Walgreens.

• 8:05Rachel Cruze?

What do you mean, her arms? Like they just cut like-

• 8:06George Kamel?

  Like her hands.

• 8:08Rachel Cruze?

  Oh.

• 8:08George Kamel?

Because you couldn't see her hands. So I needed to make it like a fake hand for her.

• 8:11Rachel Cruze?

  What?

• 8:12George Kamel?

Otherwise the photo would look weird. Well, they cropped it to where you couldn't even see her hands.

• 8:16Rachel Cruze?

Oh, it like, oh, man, a lot of hard work.

• 8:18George Kamel?

Yep. So here's my next thing. Pre-choose the photo you want at your funeral. That's a big deal. People don't think about it. What headshot do you want to go with? Do you want to go with like when you were a little bit younger?

• 8:29Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 8:29George Kamel?

Or do you want to go like this was the current state I was in?

• 8:32Rachel Cruze?

  Yes, yes, that's good.

• 8:33George Kamel?

  So think about that.

• 8:35Rachel Cruze?

I thought you were going to say someone screenshot the photo and then went to print that. Have you seen that? And then people have the border of their iPhone and stuff.

• 8:42George Kamel?

That is the most boomer move.

• 8:43Rachel Cruze?

I know. I've seen that before. I thought that's what was going to happen.

• 8:44George Kamel?

Wow. Okay. So there it is. Pick your playlist, pick your nail color, pick the outfits you want.

• 8:48Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, I'm so sorry about your Photoshop. That's, that's funny.

• 8:51George Kamel?

  It was a beautiful photo.

• 8:52Rachel Cruze?

Okay. So when it comes to dying, people have a lot of questions about their money. What happens to my money?

• 8:56George Kamel?

  That's true.

• 8:56Rachel Cruze?

What happens to my debt? What hap- what is going to happen when I die financially? So we're here for y'all.

• 9:02George Kamel?

We're going to talk about the

• 9:03Rachel Cruze?

We're going to talk all about it.

• 9:03George Kamel?

The do's and don'ts of dying. I think namely, which is don't if you can at all costs. We'd love for all of you

• 9:08Rachel Cruze?

  Try not to.

• 9:09George Kamel?

To be alive. We need all the viewers we can get.

• 9:13Rachel Cruze?

Well, they stay alive for our egos and our numbers. Thank you.

• 9:16George Kamel?

We are gonna cover some common FAQs around money after death because it is confusing and more, it's interesting.

• 9:21Rachel Cruze?

Yes, it is. Well, it's good to know what happens. So, let's just start off with the top.

• 9:25George Kamel?

  Okay.

• 9:26Rachel Cruze?

  The basic, George.

• 9:26George Kamel?

What happens to your money after you die?

• 9:28Rachel Cruze?

Let's say it. One, two, three.

• 9:30George Kamel?

  Probate.

• 9:32Rachel Cruze?

  T, t, t, t, t. So exciting.

• 9:34George Kamel?

That was the most excited anyone's ever been saying that word. So, probate is the legal process in which a court examines a person's will and makes sure that the will is legit. So, if you have one, which you should, we'll get to that. All debts are paid. That also is gonna go through probate.

• 9:50Rachel Cruze?

  Yep.

• 9:50George Kamel?

And then the remaining money and property go to the right people.

• 9:53Rachel Cruze?

Yes. Making sure everyone gets, yes, what they're supposed to.

• 9:56George Kamel?

The problem is if you don't have a will, it's just up to the government people and the judge that go, "Ah, I think it should go over here."

• 10:03Rachel Cruze?

Yeah. Well, and sometimes like just let the family decide, you know, this, and then the family's like, "No, this, this was said here, here," and it just gets into a mess.

• 10:09George Kamel?

And it's not just your stuff. It's also like the kids. I mean, if there's kids under 18 and they're not adults, like what are we gonna do over there?

• 10:16Rachel Cruze?

And again, my prayer is, most of the time, you get it worked out, especially with like the children. But the problem is, is number one, it takes longer to get everything done. It's so inefficient, and there is the chance that something goes sideways if it's not written down. So, yes, having a will clears so much of that. It is so helpful, so helpful.

• 10:36George Kamel?

Clarity is what you want. And if you wanna know the best place to get it, you can jump onto Mama Bear Legal Forms. We'll drop a link in the description. #NotA Sponsor of this show, but it's who I use and love. So, there you go.

• 10:48Rachel Cruze?

Okay, so, when you die, yep, everything goes through probate. If you have a will, it's pretty like self-explanatory. It does take some time, some things. And if you don't have a will, again, a lot of hoops to jump through. Exhausting. But what about your debt, George? What happens to your debt?

• 11:03George Kamel?

  That's the big question.

• 11:04Rachel Cruze?

Because a lot of people think, "Oh, my gosh, I..." I now owe the debt that someone else

• 11:08George Kamel?

My mom had debt, now I have to pay it.

• 11:10Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, they think it gets passed on.

• 11:12George Kamel?

Or they might go on the other side and go, "Well, it's gonna die, the debt's gonna die with them? No one's gonna ever have to worry about this." Well, here's the deal. Some debts must be paid after death, some not so much. But all debts stress you out while you're alive, so I would work to pay that off before you die. We don't know when we're gonna die, so let's just go ahead and pay it off now.

• 11:30Rachel Cruze?

Let's start the snowball while we're alive and well, everyone. Start paying off that debt. Now, here are debts that have to be settled after death, so these do have to be paid. Mortgages, car loans, joint account credit card debts, and cosigned loans. So the family doesn't necessarily inherit the debts, and collectors can't make relatives pay out the balances that aren't theirs.

• 11:52George Kamel?

  That's a big one.

• 11:53Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 11:53George Kamel?

So if someone tries to come after you for a debt that's not yours, you can say "kick rocks and pound sand."

• 11:59George Kamel?

That's what I tell them the least.

• 12:00Rachel Cruze?

  Kick rocks, pound sand.

• 12:01George Kamel?

Yeah. You never done that before?

• 12:03Rachel Cruze?

No, I have heard it. I don't really get it, but...

• 12:05George Kamel?

It's just an old timey phrase

• 12:06Rachel Cruze?

  Kick rocks.

• 12:07George Kamel?

  Of anger.

• 12:08Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 12:09George Kamel?

  Yeah.

• 12:10Rachel Cruze?

Okay, so all of this, George, is so important to know because it's gonna help you and your family. And we're all about changing your family tree, right? Setting up everyone for success, including when you pass away.

• 12:20George Kamel?

  That's right.

• 12:21Rachel Cruze?

But there is a partner out there too, you guys, that helps on this journey, and that is Fairwins. So most places handle your money like you're an account number, you know, like the big banks. But Fairwins puts you, the person, ahead of everything. Like, they are so great at taking care of you, the person. It's an amazing credit union. And Fairwins is all about their customer service, and they're not owned by Wall Street. They're owned by their members, meaning if some great things are happening, you as a member, you

• 12:50George Kamel?

  You benefit.

• 12:51Rachel Cruze?

You have an account, yes, with them. You're gonna get all of those benefits, so it is an incredible... They're an incredible service.

• 12:56George Kamel?

Yes. So if you're married, go set up a joint account. And if you're not married, set up an account. You can name a beneficiary on the account. That's very important. The beneficiary trumps everything else that we've talked about. The wills, the trusts. If there's a beneficiary on there, that's who gets the money. So if you want to check it out, you want to join Fairwins, go to fairwins.org/Ramsey right now, or as soon as this episode is over. We'll drop a link in the description as well.

• 13:21Rachel Cruze?

Okay, so how do you know if you receive inheritance from a relative? And what do you do?

• 13:26George Kamel?

Especially if it's like a distant relative and you didn't even know and you didn't know you were in the will.

• 13:30Rachel Cruze?

  Wouldn't that be magical?

• 13:31George Kamel?

  That stuff happens.

• 13:32Rachel Cruze?

Uncle Bob died, you're like, I didn't know we had an Uncle Bob. And they're like, they left you Genovia. You're like, I'm a princess, you know, like that.

• 13:38George Kamel?

  That would be your fantasy.

• 13:40Rachel Cruze?

  That would be so fun.

• 13:40George Kamel?

Here's what actually happens in real life. You would be contacted by the executor of the will, a lawyer or the probate court. And this could happen via phone call, email or mail, which is why I answer all calls just in case. You never know, you're like, ah, wrong number?

• 13:57Rachel Cruze?

  A distant relative.

• 13:58George Kamel?

  Could be my million.

• 13:59Rachel Cruze?

  Who would have known?

• 14:00George Kamel?

So bottom line, if you are named in a will, you will be told eventually.

• 14:04Rachel Cruze?

  Yes, for sure.

• 14:05George Kamel?

So what should you do in this scenario? Would you invest it? Would you let it grow?

• 14:08Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, if you do have money that you've received as an inheritance, which happens, you know.

• 14:13George Kamel?

We get calls like that on the Ramsey Show all the time.

• 14:15Rachel Cruze?

So honestly, you just want to apply it to the baby steps wherever you are. So use it to help pay off debt, use it to buy a home, use it for some cash as an emergency fund. You can invest it, you can give it, you can use some of it. But really following the baby steps is just kind of a plug and play is great. And for some people, it takes them through a lot of the baby steps because of it.

• 14:36George Kamel?

  You can leapfrog a few.

• 14:37Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah, so it's pretty wild.

• 14:38George Kamel?

Can I give you a scenario that I want your take on? Cause we took this call the other day.

• 14:42Rachel Cruze?

  Ooh, fun, yeah.

• 14:43George Kamel?

The guy said, hey, grandpa left me this inheritance, but he had wishes for me to buy a house. But he had a bunch of debt, he didn't have an emergency fund. And he said, I think I need to buy a house because grandpa said I should with this money. You know, I don't know, $50,000. And so I was trying to coach him going, hey, I would pay off the debt, get the emergency fund. That might mean the house is delayed. But what I, what grandpa really wanted, I think the heart behind it was for you to have some financial independence and own something. And right now you're in a place where it's going to be a burden instead of a blessing.

• 15:16Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 15:16George Kamel?

Would you agree? Or would you say, listen, grandpa wanted that, you gotta do what grandpa wanted?

• 15:22Rachel Cruze?

No, I would agree with you. Because again, I think the heart behind it is setting you up well. And how to set you up well is not to curse you with. A house that you necessarily can't even afford to upkeep. If you don't have the income for it, but yet you have this like some money. So. Uh, no, I would, I would be, yeah. And yours. And that's the other thing is I don't like the strings attached.

• 15:43George Kamel?

You have to use this money over here.

• 15:44Rachel Cruze?

There's a part of me that I'm like, okay. I hope I just raise good humans. You know what I mean?

• 15:49George Kamel?

  Yes.

• 15:50Rachel Cruze?

And you guys do with it as you believe. Is best and hopefully they have a good head on their shoulders to do it, but I don't know.

• 15:57George Kamel?

At what age would you trust your kids with a pile of money?

• 15:58Rachel Cruze?

I know, that's what I was just gonna say, because once and I set up all of our stuff.

• 16:01George Kamel?

Like 18? Or are you like, hey?

• 16:02Rachel Cruze?

Uh, I think we did, no, I think we did little bits. So I think they get it all maybe at 28. But they get some at 25. We like spread it out.

• 16:12George Kamel?

That's smart. I think, yeah, that we just went through this process. And I think it was like, hey, they'll get enough to cover college if they're in that phase.

• 16:18Rachel Cruze?

  Yep.

• 16:19George Kamel?

That'll get enough for like a down payment when they enter another phase. And then by the time they're in their twenties into 30, they can get the rest of the money.

• 16:25Rachel Cruze?

Yes, that's what we did too. Yep.

• 16:27George Kamel?

  There you go.

• 16:28Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, I think that's good. Slow it down a little bit. But I don't know. People do it, yeah, all different ways.

• 16:35George Kamel?

That gets us into this next section beautifully. What is the difference between a will and a trust?

• 16:40Rachel Cruze?

That's good. So a will is a legal document that says. Who gets your stuff when you die, basically. So it's that. And you want a state specific will. Cause sometimes there are different laws, as we've just seen. State by state. So make sure you get a state specific will when you do it. Uh, it goes into effect when you die. So the moment of death, the will. Is now put in place. And again, it must go through. Probate court. So you've got to go through the court system to make sure everything legally is done. Um, but that's the will. It's basically the, the document.

• 17:11George Kamel?

  Yep.

• 17:11Rachel Cruze?

After you die that says where everything should go.

• 17:13George Kamel?

And most people are totally fine with just a will. So not everybody needs a trust. And there's a lot of. Lawyers on social media telling people why it's not never enough to have a will. You need a trust, you need a trust. Well, guess what? Trusts cost more money and therefore they can make more by peddling it.

• 17:29Rachel Cruze?

  Yep.

• 17:29George Kamel?

And trusts do have a time and place, but let's get into that. So what is the trust? It's a legal arrangement that holds your assets while you're alive and after you die. So it lets you skip probate court and keeps. Things private, which is a big reason people have trusts is to keep things private. It allows you to control, manage money for loved ones and minors over time. So like Rachel and I just talked about, if you want it to be stair stepped where, hey, when the kids are 18, they get this and it goes to here. And if when they're 21, they get this, it goes over here. So as your life gets more complicated and the more wealth you build, you may want to talk to an estate attorney and get a trust set up.

• 18:04Rachel Cruze?

But like you said, there are some fees and you usually have to get a lawyer involved. It can be a little bit more.

• 18:09George Kamel?

It's thousands of dollars instead of a hundred bucks or 200 bucks.

• 18:12Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, it gets a little bit more complicated, but if there is a complicatedness to your estate into what you have built, you may want to be smart about it. It may be worth that investment.

• 18:21George Kamel?

And I hope all of our viewers and listeners build so much wealth that it gets complicated enough that they go, hey, I think we need a trust. We're willing to drop a few grand to make this happen.

• 18:29Rachel Cruze?

I love that. Yeah. And I hope our listeners build wealth and are wearing Cozy Earth because that means you are living a great life.

• 18:37George Kamel?

Who's gonna get the cuddle blanket in the cruise wheel?

• 18:40Rachel Cruze?

It needs to go in the wheel. I didn't even give it to Charles.

• 18:44George Kamel?

  King Charles.

• 18:44Rachel Cruze?

  I don't know. I just feel like that's fits.

• 18:47George Kamel?

It's very fitting. He'll be a grown man by then going, why did they leave a, okay.

• 18:50Rachel Cruze?

This big cuddle blanket for me?

• 18:51George Kamel?

Why'd they leave a 40 year old blanket in here?

• 18:53Rachel Cruze?

  I know.

• 18:54George Kamel?

You're gonna live way past your 70s, by the way.

• 18:56Rachel Cruze?

But I, I believe that. I want to take that in.

• 18:59George Kamel?

  I receive that.

• 19:00Rachel Cruze?

I'll take it. But Cozy Earth products, honestly, they are the best. The quality of them, the softness of their bamboo line, their pajamas, all of it. It is like silk. It's amazing. That it is so incredible. And the best part is, because I love a good deal. I love a dupe every now and then. But after you wash those a couple of times, it kind of loses the shape and Cozy Earth has not. Like all this stuff still fits well, is comfortable, everything. So Cozy Earth products.

• 19:27George Kamel?

I put it in the like the buy it for life category. If you are ready for quality over just quantity, Cozy Earth is for you. And we're going to sweeten the deal with 40% off. When you use the promo code SMARTMONEY at checkout, go to cozylearth.com/smartmoney. We'll also drop a link in the description.

• 19:43Rachel Cruze?

That's a lot. So good. All right. Next up, power of attorney, George.

• 19:48George Kamel?

  P O A. Now you're speaking my language.

• 19:51Rachel Cruze?

And you need one, even if you are not ill.

• 19:54George Kamel?

Yes. Because how would you know if you're going to become ill or incapacitated at some point?

• 20:00Rachel Cruze?

So, power of attorney, it's a legal document that gives someone else's authority to act basically upon your behalf. Okay, so they are able to make financial, legal, and even medical decisions if you are unable to. So it is a, is a big one.

• 20:15George Kamel?

This was a tough decision in our house to go like, who do we trust to handle all things financial? Who do we trust to handle all things medical?

• 20:22Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 20:22George Kamel?

Are they gonna pull the plug on all, George?

• 20:24Rachel Cruze?

Because usually it's the spouse first, right? Like your spouse, you know, and then you usually have one or two other people listed in case.

• 20:31George Kamel?

Yeah, I mean, there's very much so could be the case that both spouses were in an accident or something.

• 20:37Rachel Cruze?

Okay, does that not make you so nervous? Can I tell you this, George? This is like a little morbid, but we are in black.

• 20:42George Kamel?

  Just be vulnerable.

• 20:43Rachel Cruze?

We are here for it. So one of my good friends, her uncle had a heart attack, okay? Went into a coma, like, brain, like, it just wasn't good. But they said there's still, like, there's, and I'm not a medical professional, but there was something about, like, your body is still alive, but the brain activity is gone. It's like, it's kind of like you're half there, half not, like, it's weird.

• 21:05George Kamel?

Like, heart's pumping, like, things are working.

• 21:06Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, you're still there, but then you're not, and it's like this whole thing, but if you technically pulled the plug, he, he wouldn't be able to survive. But yet, there was a chance he could come back. It was all this stuff, back and forth. And, yeah, they, they kept him alive for maybe like two or three months, and dare I say, maybe longer than what I may have, I don't know, I don't know what I would have done, but it didn't look good. And that was like, that was, uh, let's see, uh, six, almost six months ago. And he went home last week.

• 21:37George Kamel?

  What?

• 21:38Rachel Cruze?

  Completely back, and

• 21:41George Kamel?

  Living a full, normal life.

• 21:42Rachel Cruze?

Well, he, his speech is a little bit, he's there having to do some speech stuff, but he's walking. I mean, all of it. How crazy. Because I've told Winston, like, if I'm not here, he just let, send me on, like, I'm ready.

• 21:54George Kamel?

Like, hey, 90 days, let's call.

• 21:56Rachel Cruze?

But now, after this, I'm like, maybe just put me in the corner for like, I don't know, 12 months? Like, see if I come back? Like, I don't know, I could come back. How weird is that though? Crazy.

• 22:05George Kamel?

  Wow.

• 22:06Rachel Cruze?

What would you do? How? Because, because we had to talk about this when we did our, all of our stuff.

• 22:10George Kamel?

What's the timeline of like the do not resuscitate?

• 22:13Rachel Cruze?

I think I was like, listen, just let me go. Like, you know?

• 22:15George Kamel?

  Really?

• 22:16Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, I'm more on the like.

• 22:17George Kamel?

I think it depends on my.

• 22:18Rachel Cruze?

Spirit, I wonder, do you get stuck in the mid, like, you're not, you know, where are you? I don't know. I don't know.

• 22:25George Kamel?

  Like a purgatory?

• 22:26Rachel Cruze?

I don't know. So just send me on. Like, I want to keep going, but now I'm like.

• 22:31George Kamel?

I've heard people in comas, though, it just feels like it's a time warp.

• 22:34Rachel Cruze?

But his wasn't even a coma. It was like a brain, like, do you know what I'm saying? It was like real bad.

• 22:39George Kamel?

  Wow.

• 22:39Rachel Cruze?

  Yes. Yes.

• 22:41George Kamel?

Like, there was very little hope. And then six months later.

• 22:43Rachel Cruze?

And they were like, but there is a small chance something, but they didn't, they didn't at all.

• 22:47George Kamel?

Here's the problem. If I was in a coma for six months, once I saw the hospital bill, I would die again.

• 22:52Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, my gosh.

• 22:53George Kamel?

You know what I mean? Like six, that's a thousand dollars a day in a hospital.

• 22:59Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 22:59George Kamel?

Thirty days times, you're like two, okay, I owe $2 million to this hospital.

• 23:03Rachel Cruze?

Health insurance will cover some of that.

• 23:04George Kamel?

You'd hope so. They'd find a way not to cover me.

• 23:07Rachel Cruze?

  Sometimes.

• 23:07George Kamel?

  Wouldn't put it past them.

• 23:09Rachel Cruze?

  And George's price match this.

• 23:10George Kamel?

Yep. They'd be like, well, his auto pay actually didn't go through last year, so.

• 23:15Rachel Cruze?

Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh. Crazy. But yeah, power attorney, you make, yeah, it's all these decisions. So maybe don't put me in charge of.

• 23:22George Kamel?

  Oh, trust me.

• 23:23Rachel Cruze?

  The plug.

• 23:23George Kamel?

You were not in the running.

• 23:25Rachel Cruze?

I think I would be like 48 hours. Eh.

• 23:27George Kamel?

  He had a good run.

• 23:32George Kamel?

That's a tough decision to make, though. A lot of these, that's the thing I found is people go to make a will and then they like, oh, I need to think through that one. And then they. Put that on pause and then it's been years.

• 23:41Rachel Cruze?

  I know.

• 23:42George Kamel?

So you just have to make the best decision you can.

• 23:44Rachel Cruze?

Do y'all have, we don't, you don't have to say publicly, but y'all have obviously some, who would take the kids? Is something happening with you and Wendy?

• 23:50George Kamel?

  Yes.

• 23:50Rachel Cruze?

  Yep. Yep.

• 23:51George Kamel?

  Yes.

• 23:52Rachel Cruze?

Do you know more people are doing friends these days than even family? Because they're not, they don't live near their family anymore. People move.

• 23:58George Kamel?

  Think about that.

• 23:59Rachel Cruze?

Yes. So a lot of people, they want to keep their kids like in the same school, like, like keep their routine.

• 24:04George Kamel?

I guess I assume my family would move.

• 24:06Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, wow.

• 24:07George Kamel?

But I guess the family we have, they're, they're local.

• 24:10Rachel Cruze?

Oh, there you go. Okay, that's good. That's.

• 24:11George Kamel?

But like my, I chose my brother for medical because he's a nurse practitioner. So I was like, he would be able to talk with the doctors, like he knows what's going on.

• 24:19Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 24:19George Kamel?

Yeah. I don't want to be trusted with that.

• 24:22Rachel Cruze?

  No, no.

• 24:22George Kamel?

I'd be just be chat GPTing, like, what would you do? Should we pull the plug or not, you know?

• 24:28Rachel Cruze?

What are the, yeah, what are the odds?

• 24:29George Kamel?

  Don't put that on me.

• 24:30Rachel Cruze?

Chat GPT. Okay, next up, what is a beneficiary?

• 24:34George Kamel?

  It's a $10 word, I'll tell you that much.

• 24:36Rachel Cruze?

Yeah. Who, who is it, George? Pop quiz.

• 24:40George Kamel?

The beneficiary is the person or entity.

• 24:43Rachel Cruze?

  Ah.

• 24:43George Kamel?

Gosh, I hate entity more than anything as a word. It's so condescending.

• 24:49George Kamel?

The person you name to receive financial assets when you die. So, on my bank account.

• 24:53Rachel Cruze?

  They get the benefit.

• 24:54George Kamel?

On my fair winds account, there's a spot for beneficiary. And so you likely would put your spouse if you have one.

• 25:00Rachel Cruze?

  Yep.

• 25:00George Kamel?

But you may have a backup on there of a family member, a dad, mom, brother, sister, you know, kid. But make sure you have beneficiaries on everything that can have a beneficiary.

• 25:09Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 25:10George Kamel?

And do not leave, if you are like, you had a divorce? And you left your ex on there and she's still, she gets the money.

• 25:17Rachel Cruze?

  Yes, and you know what?

• 25:18George Kamel?

Number one pro tip, if you have a new spouse, make sure you change the beneficiary on all accounts.

• 25:24Rachel Cruze?

We got a call on the Ramsey show and her husband passed away. And he still had his sister as the beneficiary because they had only been married two years and he never changed it. And the sister got the money and isn't paying the wife. And she doesn't have any moral grounds too. I mean, I kind of think she should, like, I don't know. I feel, Phil's right, but you, no legal gra, I mean, it is what it is.

• 25:47George Kamel?

And it doesn't matter what the will said. Just if that's the beneficiary on the account at the time of death.

• 25:51Rachel Cruze?

So remember, your investments, savings accounts, cars, homes, those can have beneficiaries. So make sure you do that.

• 25:59George Kamel?

That's a big one. All right, something else that helps protect your family? Delete me.

• 26:03Rachel Cruze?

  Yes. What incredible service.

• 26:05George Kamel?

  It's the best.

• 26:06Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, they go in and remove your data from the internet and especially these data broker websites, you guys, these weird websites out there. They think the names of them. They're like, find people.

• 26:15George Kamel?

  Creepy people searcher.

• 26:16Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, it's weird. It's like, yeah. But your information's out there. Your home address, email addresses, your kids' names. They're out there.

• 26:23George Kamel?

Even deceased relatives' info can be out there and they can use that to scam.

• 26:28Rachel Cruze?

Yes, and old homes too. Like condo Winston and I lived in for only six months, it was on there. When I was like going through.

• 26:33George Kamel?

  Don't love that.

• 26:34Rachel Cruze?

All the Delete Me stuff in my profile. I know, I was like, oh my gosh. So they go in and remove your data because these data brokers not only will send out your info to other people and you could be scammed or, you know, there's some phishing, you know, they'll text you and all this stuff. But they will even sell your data to other people.

• 26:58Rachel Cruze?

Okay, so if you have no kids, the big question is, who's going to get your money by default? If there's no will, no kids, nothing, what is going to happen?

• 27:07George Kamel?

So let's walk through the scenarios. If you're married, your spouse will usually get everything unless you hate your spouse. If you're not married, goes to your parents by default.

• 27:17Rachel Cruze?

  Yep.

• 27:17George Kamel?

And if your parents are no longer with us, siblings.

• 27:20Rachel Cruze?

And if your siblings have passed, it'll go to nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins. If you have zero family alive, which is very rare, your money usually will just go to the state.

• 27:32George Kamel?

Wow, this is called a sheet? I don't know if I'm saying that correctly. Correct me if I'm wrong, nerds. I'm probably am. Happy to be wrong.

• 27:41Rachel Cruze?

Find somebody. You know, there was a, there was some luxury brand designer, I'm going to forget who it was. It wasn't like Dolce and Gabbana, but it was like a, yeah, it was like a high up fashion brand. And they left their whole, it was like $240 million, something crazy, to their gardener.

• 27:59George Kamel?

  Wow.

• 27:59Rachel Cruze?

Yes, I read an article about it.

• 28:01George Kamel?

  Makes you think.

• 28:02Rachel Cruze?

  Isn't that wild?

• 28:03George Kamel?

  Was it just the gardener?

• 28:04Rachel Cruze?

  Okay.

• 28:07Rachel Cruze?

  It's a good question, George. I don't know.

• 28:09George Kamel?

  I'd wanna dig into that.

• 28:10Rachel Cruze?

But the story I made up in my head is that the guy had no family. But leave it to someone. That's the point I'm trying to make. Leave it to someone.

• 28:17George Kamel?

  I was stuck on this.

• 28:18Rachel Cruze?

The barista you love, you know? Make her day. Leave all your assets there. Like, find a human.

• 28:23George Kamel?

I would just like to leave it to random people. Can you just drop any name in there and be like, hey, give it to John Smith? And then that person has to figure out, who, what John Smith were you referring to? What about the zero family members alive? Can you imagine being the last one? Like, you're not related to anyone alive anymore. That's a wild thought.

• 28:43Rachel Cruze?

  That is a wild thought.

• 28:43George Kamel?

That would mean that all of your siblings didn't have kids.

• 28:46Rachel Cruze?

Or you had, or you were an only child.

• 28:48George Kamel?

Only child, that's true. And they just stop there.

• 28:51Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 28:52George Kamel?

No cousins, aunts and uncles gone.

• 28:54Rachel Cruze?

  Yep.

• 28:55George Kamel?

  Those, they didn't have kids.

• 28:57Rachel Cruze?

Both of your parents were only children. There you go.

• 29:01George Kamel?

Okay. Let us know in the comments. If you know anyone. Who was the last one in the family tree. That's a pretty baller move, though.

• 29:09Rachel Cruze?

  Okay, throw it out there.

• 29:10George Kamel?

That's a lot of pressure to be the last one.

• 29:12Rachel Cruze?

A lot of pressure. You know, the name thing is pressure. If you're like the last boy to carry on, like that was my brother. There were no other Ramses.

• 29:19George Kamel?

  Oh.

• 29:20Rachel Cruze?

Daniel was the last one. Because, yeah, dad's sister had boys, but she was married. Like, you know, that name.

• 29:28George Kamel?

The men usually carry their name forward.

• 29:30Rachel Cruze?

  Yes, yes.

• 29:31George Kamel?

Wow. Have you done the family tree stuff? You look, I know, I know Dave Ramsey's really into that.

• 29:36Rachel Cruze?

Not as much as my dad. Dad is deep in it.

• 29:38George Kamel?

  You're like, he's got it, we're good.

• 29:40Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, did you hear, um, someone did offer to do a lot of like...

• 29:45George Kamel?

  Yeah, she attempted mine.

• 29:47Rachel Cruze?

Yes, yes, to come into it. And she did Ken Coleman's and found out that her and Ken, or she found out that Dave and Ken Coleman are related.

• 29:54George Kamel?

  Seventh cousins?

• 29:55Rachel Cruze?

It's like, um, yes, it's something like that.

• 29:58George Kamel?

Or like a cousin of seven times removed.

• 30:00Rachel Cruze?

There's a good chance Ken Coleman and Dave Ramsey are related.

• 30:04George Kamel?

Ken's, Ken has to be in the will now.

• 30:05Rachel Cruze?

He did. He has to get on the schedule for all the vacations and everything.

• 30:09George Kamel?

No, she, she attempted to do mine, didn't get far, and sent me my grandpa's obituary. And I was like, yeah, I was at the funeral. Thank you for the information.

• 30:18Rachel Cruze?

George, I feel like you always kind of get the short end of the stick sometimes with stuff.

• 30:21George Kamel?

She literally sent me another one that said, hey, you're short and here's other famous people that are short. I was like, this has gone beyond, this isn't even genealogy.

• 30:30Rachel Cruze?

Stop it, but you're all gonna live long.

• 30:32George Kamel?

  I guess.

• 30:33Rachel Cruze?

  Cause you're short.

• 30:33George Kamel?

She was just, I guess, trying to comfort me.

• 30:35Rachel Cruze?

Oh my gosh, that's so funny.

• 30:37George Kamel?

Napoleon wasn't that tall. Thank you.

• 30:42Rachel Cruze?

Go conquer a world, George. Alright, let's do some quick financial do's and don'ts. You ready?

• 30:47George Kamel?

  Alright.

• 30:48Rachel Cruze?

Do have a will. Everyone, get a will.

• 30:52George Kamel?

And you might think, well, I don't own anything, Rachel. Who cares? What do you say to that person?

• 30:57Rachel Cruze?

I would say still do it, because there's gonna be some simple questions on there and it just makes things easier for everyone. So they're not having to go through all this stuff. So do a will, do a power of attorney, set that up.

• 31:07George Kamel?

  Yep.

• 31:08Rachel Cruze?

That is very responsible. Again, eliminating a lot of these big decisions of who does what. If something happens to you, that's just a gift for people. The questions are answered. So like, that's part of it.

• 31:18George Kamel?

And if, just think, if this happened today, who would I want to do this?

• 31:22Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 31:22George Kamel?

And if you don't have a good answer, that means you have some homework to do, but it's not an excuse to just put it off.

• 31:26Rachel Cruze?

Mm-hmm. Do keep beneficiaries updated and consistent, just like we talked about. If your life is changing, make sure you're changing that stuff too.

• 31:35George Kamel?

That 401K, the old IRA, the insurance policy, the life insurance, the bank account. You gotta make sure that you're keeping that updated as your life changes. Because again, those override.

• 31:45Rachel Cruze?

That's right. Okay, what do you, which they not do?

• 31:48George Kamel?

Do not rely on verbal promises alone. That's not gonna hold up in a court of law. Well, he said.

• 31:54Rachel Cruze?

Someone said something and they tried to.

• 31:56George Kamel?

Just to fight over the assets.

• 31:57Rachel Cruze?

And don't like write it on the back of a sheet of paper and like, here it is, like go through the real process to get it legally done.

• 32:04George Kamel?

Get it done. Wills, power of attorneys, healthcare directives, all of that. Next on the do not list, do not let your apathy affect your loved ones down the road. So in the words of George Washington and Hamilton, quote, dying is easy, living is harder. Hey, George was a real one for that.

• 32:22Rachel Cruze?

Living is tough. It can be tough out here.

• 32:25George Kamel?

You won't be the one cleaning up the mess when you pass, but your favorite and most beloved people will be. And I don't know about you, I want, when people are grieving my loss, I want them to think I was a great, wonderful person.

• 32:36Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 32:37George Kamel?

I want them to think that. What I don't want them to remember is, yeah, remember that time you left us a mess? And a giant maze and nightmare of a

• 32:44Rachel Cruze?

Yeah. Leave well, people. That's it. You know, you leave a star.

• 32:47George Kamel?

Even if you were a terrible person on earth.

• 32:49Rachel Cruze?

Responsible he was or she was. See, that's a good legacy. How people feel about you.

• 32:53George Kamel?

Yeah, leave them with a good taste in their mouth about how you lived. So handle your debt, get the paperwork in check, allow them to grieve without added financial chaos. Give them, give them a high quality JPG that you want printed at Walgreens.

• 33:07Rachel Cruze?

That's right. Give them that photo.

• 33:09George Kamel?

Don't leave them scouring through old Facebook profile photos.

• 33:11Rachel Cruze?

Ask friends to, you know, Photoshop things.

• 33:14George Kamel?

I swear, if I have a bad quality photo in that frame, I will come back from the grave. Will come back.

• 33:20Rachel Cruze?

I think it's gonna be great. I think you're like

• 33:23George Kamel?

If I can see the pixels, I will come at you. I will rise.

• 33:27Rachel Cruze?

Oh man, but then also it may take a lot to print that picture.

• 33:30George Kamel?

  It really does.

• 33:31Rachel Cruze?

They may get a better deal if they do it.

• 33:34George Kamel?

Just put an iPad up. I don't care.

• 33:36Rachel Cruze?

  Oh yeah, swipe through.

• 33:37George Kamel?

  Slide show.

• 33:38Rachel Cruze?

  Slide show. Love it.

• 33:40George Kamel?

  You know what?

• 33:41Rachel Cruze?

That's what I'm gonna make people sit through.

• 33:42George Kamel?

  You know what I want?

• 33:43Rachel Cruze?

Everyone has to sit through a 30 minute show of me, just my, my life.

• 33:48George Kamel?

I want to do a chat GPT slideshow of me doing heroic, courageous, brave, noble things. And I want Sarah McLachlan, arms of an angel behind it. I want people crying seeing me save a kitten from a tree.

• 34:00Rachel Cruze?

I was gonna say, yeah, oh my gosh.

• 34:03George Kamel?

Can you imagine? They will be so inspired.

• 34:06Rachel Cruze?

  George feeding a village.

• 34:07George Kamel?

Yes. And chat GPT will nail it by then. Hopefully, if I die like, I don't know, 20, 40, 80 years from now.

• 34:14Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 34:15George Kamel?

  At 116.

• 34:16Rachel Cruze?

One of you like Like you went to space. That's gonna be mine for you. George went to the moon.

• 34:21George Kamel?

Me with Katy Perry next to me. And she's like, see, I actually went.

• 34:25Rachel Cruze?

The only person that actually went to the moon is George Kamel. I'll believe it.

• 34:29George Kamel?

Can we give the people some resources? Cause we flew through a lot.

• 34:32Rachel Cruze?

  It was a lot, y'all.

• 34:33George Kamel?

This should not be the last thing you do for your legacy in estate planning.

• 34:37Rachel Cruze?

  Still alive and well.

• 34:38George Kamel?

Yeah. Also, if you have kids listening, I'm sorry. We should have put a disclaimer up front. This episode may be a lot for a child to hear.

• 34:46Rachel Cruze?

  Might be.

• 34:47George Kamel?

  Maybe we'll

• 34:48Rachel Cruze?

  Keep the innocents.

• 34:49George Kamel?

  Add one to the front.

• 34:49Rachel Cruze?

They don't need to worry about this.

• 34:50George Kamel?

But hey, maybe the kid is now nagging you going, Mom, did you ever get that will? Remember that Ramsey people said?

• 34:55Rachel Cruze?

Is the power of attorney document done, Mom?

• 34:57George Kamel?

Remember that that girl said you should get a will?

• 35:00Rachel Cruze?

  Oh my gosh.

• 35:01George Kamel?

  That's you. You're the girl.

• 35:02Rachel Cruze?

Okay. So what we are gonna do to help you out is we're gonna leave our Ramsey's Estate Planning Guide, which is the process to walk you through everything we talked about. We'll leave that in the show notes for you. Uh, to get started. So you guys, happy living, you know?

• 35:15George Kamel?

  Happy living.

• 35:16Rachel Cruze?

  It's great.

• 35:16George Kamel?

Hey, if you're watching this, be grateful. Be grateful you're alive, that you're in a time and place where you could experience Smart Money Happy Hour for free. Not behind a paywall. Sure, there's a few ads in there, but that's, that's a small price to pay for the quality content you get on this.

• 35:30Rachel Cruze?

Y'all are so lucky is what George is saying. It's horrible. So horrible.

• 35:33George Kamel?

They got to live at the same time as Rachel Cruz.

• 35:35Rachel Cruze?

Oh my God. Oh my gosh. What a gift.

• 35:38George Kamel?

And you got to live at the same time as Backstreet Boys of the Sphere. That's a gift. I don't want to hear any complaints.

• 35:46Rachel Cruze?

  I know.

• 35:46George Kamel?

  What a gift.

• 35:47Rachel Cruze?

What a gift it was. There is.

• 35:49George Kamel?

I think you're actually getting emotional.

• 35:51Rachel Cruze?

It just keeps on giving. It gets in my spirit and it makes me so happy. Okay. All right. So before we spill the tea on our guilty as charged segments, George, what do we rate the drink? What do we think?

• 36:03George Kamel?

  We are dead even.

• 36:04Rachel Cruze?

We are dead even. You know, I'm gonna go, I make a 10 out of 10.

• 36:10George Kamel?

Wow. That's brave. I'm gonna go eight out of 10. I think it was a really good drink. The color threw me off. And mixologist Michael said it's supposed to be a bright blue and that's all I keep thinking about.

• 36:22Rachel Cruze?

Crap, you didn't tell me that.

• 36:23George Kamel?

Well, I wanted to save that for the end.

• 36:24Rachel Cruze?

  Jeez.

• 36:26George Kamel?

But it was very good. Uh, it's got some egg white in there.

• 36:29Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 36:29George Kamel?

Which I, which I like personally, but it's still a strong drink. I would order it at a restaurant and I wouldn't complain.

• 36:35Rachel Cruze?

  Yes.

• 36:35George Kamel?

I'd be grateful that I got to live at the same time as Rachel Cruz and the Backstreet Boys.

• 36:38Rachel Cruze?

  And just cheers it.

• 36:39George Kamel?

Busy being grateful. Put that on a shirt.

• 36:42Rachel Cruze?

  Just busy being grateful.

• 36:43George Kamel?

  Just busy being grateful.

• 36:46George Kamel?

It's a southern mom right there. So this is the Night King. It costs $3.23 per glass.

• 36:51Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, it's expensive.

• 36:53George Kamel?

Good taste ain't cheap. It's got Pisco, which is like a sweet sour liqueur, blue curacao, curacao, creme de cacao, all of the $10 words, lemon juice and egg white.

• 37:07Rachel Cruze?

  Mmm.

• 37:07George Kamel?

So it's a very interesting, complex drink, which I think life is the same way, isn't it?

• 37:12Rachel Cruze?

  It is just complex.

• 37:14George Kamel?

  It goes places.

• 37:15Rachel Cruze?

  You never know.

• 37:16George Kamel?

Sometimes it's not the color you thought it would be, but you're still like, man, I'm glad I got a drink.

• 37:20Rachel Cruze?

Geez, that's here. May not be the expectation in life I was thinking.

• 37:24George Kamel?

Not my strongest analogy, but here we are.

• 37:26Rachel Cruze?

  But it delivered.

• 37:27George Kamel?

Get the recipe in the show notes. Make it while you're still alive.

• 37:30Rachel Cruze?

Oh, my gosh. All right. Now it's time for

• 37:33George Kamel?

  Guilty as charged.

• 37:35Rachel Cruze?

And this is where we ask each other a guilty as charged question every week. And if we're guilty, we take a sip. Right, George, the question is, have you ever preclaimed something from my relatives' house long before they die?

• 37:47George Kamel?

Oh, wow. I didn't know you could preclaim it.

• 37:52Rachel Cruze?

My mom always wants to do this with us. Did you know this?

• 37:54George Kamel?

Wait, like you're at her house and she's like, girls, come here.

• 37:57Rachel Cruze?

Mm-hmm. And or she'll text us, I need to go over my jewelry with y'all. She wants to make sure we don't sell any of her jewelry, that we all know what we're taking. Yes, she tells us that all the time. Don't sell my jewelry when I die. She tells us that like three times a year.

• 38:12George Kamel?

So it's more of a threat than it is like a generosity.

• 38:14Rachel Cruze?

But we need to like go through and like look at all of it. Yes. And now that we all have girls, like the girls are gonna want some, you know what I mean? Like it's like a whole thing. So.

• 38:22George Kamel?

  That's fun.

• 38:23Rachel Cruze?

So that, but the one thing I do want from my mom, and I haven't really said it out loud, so maybe I'm gonna say it now and send my sister the episode.

• 38:29George Kamel?

  Speaker's truth.

• 38:31Rachel Cruze?

I want my mom's Christmas china, which is really pretty Christmas china.

• 38:36George Kamel?

Is it, can you explain what it looks like?

• 38:38Rachel Cruze?

Yeah. And it may be nostalgic. Maybe it's just because of like. We grew up like with it. It's almost like this like yellow goldish color plates and the trim are these ribbons. They're like red, green, blue woven through all around and they're and the plates are square, but the edges are like circled.

• 38:58George Kamel?

Oh, yeah, kind of rounded edge?

• 38:59Rachel Cruze?

Yep, yes. Some of the serving and then some of the obviously just like the dinner plates and all of it, but it's just the border. It's just beautiful.

• 39:07George Kamel?

Do you guys use it at Christmas?

• 39:09Rachel Cruze?

  Yep.

• 39:09George Kamel?

  It's actually used.

• 39:10Rachel Cruze?

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. But it's just so pretty.

• 39:13George Kamel?

  All right.

• 39:13Rachel Cruze?

And I don't have Christmas china. Like, we use the same plates 12 months a year. But I love the idea of having like different sets of plates.

• 39:21George Kamel?

  Denise, I'm sorry.

• 39:22Rachel Cruze?

I know, I gotta, I need to text her after this episode. I'm like, can I snag the Christmas china?

• 39:27George Kamel?

Denise doesn't have a show where she got to preclaim it.

• 39:29Rachel Cruze?

That or any Christmas villages if my mom still has them.

• 39:32George Kamel?

Oh, that's fun. Is she into that?

• 39:35Rachel Cruze?

She was. They had some, I don't know where they are now. My grandparents were big into it and they are, we are all gonna get one. They, my Papa keeps his up 12 months a year in a cabinet.

• 39:44George Kamel?

  Wow.

• 39:44Rachel Cruze?

Yes, in the living room. It's been like that since I was a kid, too. The Christmas villages. So I think we all, I think all the grandkids get one, but I need to make sure for sure I get one of those.

• 39:53George Kamel?

I think you should get first dibs on anything.

• 39:56Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, thanks, George.

• 39:57George Kamel?

Just because you'll be the most annoying about it. So it's like, let Rachel go first. We'll deal with the leftovers, we'll be fine.

• 40:03Rachel Cruze?

I'll just throw out my hints. I'm like, I love, love the White House with the red door. I love that one.

• 40:08George Kamel?

  Start putting tags on it.

• 40:09Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah.

• 40:10George Kamel?

  Property of.

• 40:11Rachel Cruze?

Just put my name on it, no. How about you?

• 40:13George Kamel?

Uh, I'm gonna be honest, nothing my family owns is of major value that I know of.

• 40:18Rachel Cruze?

Well, not like money value, but you just sentimental value. Okay, you got that too. No heart, George, are you alive?

• 40:24George Kamel?

I think as I get older, I'm less sentimental about physical things.

• 40:27Rachel Cruze?

Oh, wow, it's usually the opposite.

• 40:30George Kamel?

Maybe over time, like, I don't know.

• 40:32Rachel Cruze?

There's nothing, though. Does, would Whitney have something like from?

• 40:34George Kamel?

  Whitney, for she already does.

• 40:36Rachel Cruze?

  Oh, okay, okay.

• 40:37George Kamel?

She's got, you know, grandma's china in the attic.

• 40:39Rachel Cruze?

  Y'all may not care.

• 40:40George Kamel?

But also I'm realizing like all boomers are secretly just hoarders. And so I'm like, ugh, like, I don't want any of, you know? But then if it actually happened, I might, I would probably have a change of heart. And I'd go through the stuff.

• 40:52Rachel Cruze?

Yeah, like a book or like a Bible, like something that like, yeah, your dad had.

• 40:56George Kamel?

Like this is the camel stuffed animal that came with the Prince of Egypt VHS. And I want, you know what I mean? Like they still have to this day.

• 41:04Rachel Cruze?

  No, they don't.

• 41:05George Kamel?

I bought a jasmine pillow, like jasmine from Aladdin, a little bright blue pillow with a pop out tiger that's on a string. They still, when I FaceTime them, will hold up the jasmine pillow and the tiger and try to send me home with it every time. Like my grown wife is gonna be like, yes, perfect. We'll put that in Mia's room. It's a 25 year old jasmine pillow. What are we doing here?

• 41:28Rachel Cruze?

Why do you have a jasmine pillow?

• 41:30George Kamel?

  I was really into jasmine.

• 41:34George Kamel?

  What can I say?

• 41:35Rachel Cruze?

  That is so funny.

• 41:35George Kamel?

So yeah, I don't think anything is of value, but I probably will get sentimental in another stage of life. Right now I'm in the purge phase.

• 41:41Rachel Cruze?

  Yeah, get everything out.

• 41:43George Kamel?

  Everything must go.

• 41:43Rachel Cruze?

Okay, I appreciate that. Oh man, well, if you have a guilty as charged question for us, make sure to DM us at Rachel Cruiser, at George Kamel, or leave it in the comments.
