Hello, everyone. Welcome to another episode of Good Hang. We have a great guest today. It is the one, the only Gwyneth Paltrow. Gwyneth and I, we get into it. We're going to talk about a lot of things. We're going to talk about codependency, bone density. I mistake her for Nicole Kidman and will never forget it for the rest of my life. And also, we talk about her new film, Marty Supreme, out now and her return to acting. So it's a great conversation. And but, you know, we always do this thing before our guests come and join us where we talk well behind their back and speak to someone and get a question from them. And joining me via Zoom is the director of Marty Supreme, Josh Safdie.

• 1:22Amy Poehler?

Josh has made a bunch of really amazing films, including Good Time with Robert Pattinson and Adam Sandler's Uncut Gems. And this is another, you know, big hit. So let's join Josh and see where he's talking to us from. Hi, Josh.

• 2:29Amy Poehler?

Am I catching you in a trailer or in the back of a kitchen?

• 2:33Speaker 01

Yeah, in the back of a kitchen.

• 2:36Amy Poehler?

Where are you? Where are we talking to you from?

• 2:38Speaker 01

I'm in, I'm in, I'm doing grueling press in London. And they double booked me. They, this was kind of added late, so I'm actually eating in the kitchen.

• 2:49Amy Poehler?

  Oh, wait, you can eat.

• 2:49Speaker 01

Can I do it? They said, can I do it in the bathroom? And they said, no, because we need to have access to the bathroom. I said, do you have anywhere that I can do it? So I said, the pastry thing, because it's like morning stuff. So they said it's pretty, the traffic here is quite minimal, so.

• 3:06Amy Poehler?

Well, you know, as a director, it kind of makes sense that there's some interesting depth to this shot.

• 3:11Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, I, I hope so. I mean, I actually am hoping that people, there's some really good pastries here.

• 3:18Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 3:18Speaker 01

  Really, like, look here.

• 3:20Amy Poehler?

Let me see, let me see. Oh, jeez, we got a croissant. We got.

• 3:26Speaker 01

  Can you see that?

• 3:26Amy Poehler?

Yeah, there's like a braided something. What is that?

• 3:30Speaker 01

  Hello, sorry.

• 3:34Amy Poehler?

Now there's someone coming to get the pastries.

• 3:38Speaker 01

  Thank you. Thank you.

• 3:41Amy Poehler?

Listeners, now that someone came behind and are grabbing the pastries from behind our set, and we're gonna need those pastries in there for continuity. We're gonna get those pastries back, Josh.

• 3:52Speaker 01

  Some more, so.

• 3:55Amy Poehler?

We haven't had a chance to meet you, and I am a huge, huge fan of your films and your work.

• 3:59Speaker 01

  Sorry.

• 4:00Amy Poehler?

Wait, listeners, there's another person behind Josh getting some more pastries right now. This is amazing.

• 4:05Speaker 01

  Sorry about that.

• 4:07Amy Poehler?

Well, it's hard to make a good movie. Congratulations on making many. And this movie seems awesome. And you, you work with Gwyneth and Timothy Chalamet, so many other great people in your film. First of all, your casting is super interesting. How do you approach casting? You're like, you have someone in mind when you're writing, or like, how do you approach casting in general?

• 4:28Speaker 01

I, for the most, for most of the writing process, I try to think of somebody and write with their voice. So like, casting Gwyneth is the reason why I wrote it for her. It's like, I have this memory of her. Obviously, she's, was acting until pretty recently. But I have this memory of her as like a teenager, as like a kid, in the movies, like, you know, obviously. Or earlier like Seven and and Hard A, PTA and Fincher and my cinematographer shot Seven. Like those were like early, like you're into film, you're like, wow, these are so, but then like Talented Mr. Ripley and Great Expectations and A Perfect Murder, amazing movie that she plays. And later, Two Lovers by James Gray. I mean, she's talked about as a movie star who hasn't acted in a long time immediately.

• 5:12Speaker 01

And that, I think for her also was really, really special. Um, because it was, it was easy for her to tap into that, but she like brought, she's cool. She's like, like a boulder, but also a feather at the same time. So she's like, she, she brings that to the movie in such a great way. But she, she said to me right before we started shooting, I, I, I scheduled it so that the first thing that we shot was, um, her, like acting on sta- her character acting on stage for the first time in 25 years. So, and she turned to me, she's like, I, I hope I remember how to do this. And it was something so like, this person I like, looked up to and one of my, the greatest actors and I just, you know, revered her.

• 5:56Speaker 01

And now she's coming to me and she's so vulnerable. And it was so human. It was so like, perfect. It was so perfect.

• 6:04Amy Poehler?

That's the thing I think is so interesting about Gwyneth is she balances those two things, like a lot of real like self-awareness and self-assuredness and confidence, and then a very open, creative and vulnerable quality, both of them. A lot and, and I really, um, I, I, I'm so interested in talking to her about exactly that, that, that moment in your film.

• 6:27Speaker 01

I can't wait to hear you guys talk about it.

• 6:28Amy Poehler?

The moment in the film when she is on stage and she kind of gets this glee that she's back.

• 6:34Speaker 01

  Great moment, great moment.

• 6:35Amy Poehler?

Yeah. And, and, and you, and it's shot so beautifully and captured so beautifully. And it does feel like we're talking to her in that moment when she's feeling like I'm an actress again, whatever. And do you ever even really stop? And to your point, I mean, she is one of the guests that I feel like is the most projected upon. She is used to being looked at, which is already har- a hard thing. Like she, she can withstand being looked at.

• 7:04Speaker 01

  That's a hard thing. I can't.

• 7:06Amy Poehler?

  No, I I.

• 7:07Speaker 01

I can't. I was like, I got, I, my wife and I got married in, at City Hall, partially because I didn't wanna like, stand on a aisle and get looked at. And she's, like, as people say, she's got that dog in her, you know, and she can, she's, she's a lot. I mean, when I first went to meet with her, I just kept telling my agents, just, please, just get me in front of her. I was like, full on Marty, and I pull up to her house and I go in, and there's this thing that Hollywood does that people don't, sorry.

• 7:36Amy Poehler?

But there's someone else coming for croissants.

• 7:38Speaker 01

Uh, people, people don't know about this, and it's something that I like, learned in Hollywood a little bit later. It's like, when you go and you meet someone, in particular, someone of power, you go in and they have this trick that they do, I'm sure you know about this, where you have the assistant or someone they work with comes in after fifteen minutes and they say, oh, you know, we have your next meeting is here. Do you want me to push it, or do you want me to like, do you wanna, you know, jump now? And they, that's like a little thing, is to get them out of the meeting, like, this is a hard one, I'm gonna get out of it. And I saw her, her assistant come in after fifteen minutes, like, oh, man, that was so brief. And, but it was, we were really connecting on the, the history of this character. She's like, no, you know, just push it. I was like, alright, I'm in. And she pushed it like, four times.

• 8:23Speaker 01

So when I left, I was like, I think I did it. I think I like, convinced her to do this, just based on the push rule.

• 8:30Amy Poehler?

Yes. Well, I know you are about to eat, and um, there's nothing more stre- you know, it, it's the first rule of directing. When you have a croissant in the shot, you're gonna have to eat it by the end of the, of the interview.

• 8:43Speaker 01

One of the ones with the little, look at this over here, look at this.

• 8:46Amy Poehler?

Let's see what else we got. Josh is directing us. Ooh, oh, chocolate covered donuts? Um, okay, so, uh, to, to finish out, we, I asked my guests, uh, my, uh, Zoom guests to give me a question for, uh, the guest I'm talking to today. Is there anything big or small, you know, important, not important, that you would want to hear in this conversation with me and her? Or like, you wanted to always ask her, or advice, or thoughts, or anything that comes to mind?

• 9:14Speaker 01

Oh, man. Uh, what did your son think of the movie?

• 9:18Amy Poehler?

Beautiful, cuz you guys just had a premiere.

• 9:21Speaker 01

He just saw it, and I spoke to him very briefly, and he was, he felt. He like had this kind of high about him, but I didn't get to talk, you know, you get pulled in all these directions, but um, I wanted to talk to him more. And his, his name is Moses and the dog's name in the movie is Moses. And Moses, Moses is the purveyor, the moral, he's the moral purveyor. So.

• 9:43Amy Poehler?

I love that. And also Josh, I just find it so awesome that, you know, as the movie's coming out and it's getting these huge reviews and it's, it's out, people are getting to see it, you still care about what people think of it, you know, like it's, it's important for you to hear how it's.

• 9:59Speaker 01

In the room, in the room. I try not to pay attention or read the other stuff.

• 10:05Amy Poehler?

Well, I'm here to tell you it's a hit.

• 10:07Speaker 01

  Oh, thanks.

• 10:08Amy Poehler?

  It's a hit, baby!

• 10:11Speaker 01

Oh, thank you. You gotta, you have a good meter on you. So that I'll like, think you're not bullshitting me there.

• 10:16Amy Poehler?

No, it's a hit. The kids love it. The critics love it. Awards all day, babe. Get ready. I don't believe in jinxes. Thank you so much for your time. I can't wait.

• 10:29Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 10:29Amy Poehler?

Send me a photo of you eating any baked goods that you get to get in that kitchen.

• 10:34Speaker 01

Okay, I, I really hope the camera didn't see me touching the food.

• 10:39Speaker 01

  Thank you so much.

• 10:40Amy Poehler?

Thank you so much for your time. Such a pleasure.

• 10:42Speaker 01

Have a, have a good time talking to Glenn. She's, she's, it's like talking to a movie star.

• 10:48Amy Poehler?

  I, I can't wait.

• 10:49Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 10:50Amy Poehler?

Okay. Thanks so much, Josh. Appreciate your time. Bye.

Gwyneth is here. Gwyneth Paltrow is here and we're checking her earrings. I, I mean,

• 11:46Speaker 02

  I feel like maybe.

• 11:47Amy Poehler?

I feel like I need to come to you for this advice. I, I,

• 11:50Speaker 02

  Really?

• 11:51Amy Poehler?

I'd love to see one off.

• 11:52Speaker 02

  I agree. What about that?

• 11:55Amy Poehler?

  I like that better.

• 11:56Speaker 02

  Oh, thank God.

• 11:58Amy Poehler?

No, I'm thrilled that you took my.

• 12:00Speaker 02

Oh, God, these are the worst.

• 12:02Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 12:02Speaker 02

I felt like they're like these big boingers.

• 12:05Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 12:06Speaker 02

Why do I need to do that?

• 12:07Amy Poehler?

  And were they clip-ons?

• 12:09Speaker 02

Yes, and they were really painful.

• 12:11Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 12:11Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 12:12Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I don't think you need to boing it up.

• 12:13Speaker 02

  No more boingers, guys.

• 12:15Amy Poehler?

No more boinger, big boingers on your ears. That's what we're saying for 2026.

• 12:21Amy Poehler?

  Hi.

• 12:22Speaker 02

  Hi.

• 12:22Amy Poehler?

I'm so happy you're doing this. Thank you for being here.

• 12:24Speaker 02

I have not seen you in such a long time.

• 12:26Amy Poehler?

No, I was trying to think, I feel like the last time we may have seen each other was Rob Lowe's 60th birthday party. The most incredible, young-looking 60-year-old in the world, Rob Lowe, incredible.

• 12:38Speaker 02

  It's all the plastic surgery.

• 12:40Amy Poehler?

Yeah, over and over and over again.

• 12:43Speaker 02

  Over and over.

• 12:44Amy Poehler?

Um, I mean, and, and I, I feel like I, I got to see you briefly there and sat next to your wonderful husband and had a really good convo with Brad, but, um.

• 12:53Speaker 02

Yeah, that was it, but we didn't get to.

• 12:55Amy Poehler?

  We didn't.

• 12:55Speaker 02

We didn't get a good hang, you know what I mean?

• 13:01Amy Poehler?

I'm very excited to talk to you today.

• 13:03Speaker 02

  Oh, thanks.

• 13:04Amy Poehler?

  Thanks for being here.

• 13:05Speaker 02

  Please lower your expectations.

• 13:07Amy Poehler?

I do enjoy a low expectation, too.

• 13:09Speaker 02

  Okay, good.

• 13:09Amy Poehler?

Um, but, um, I wanted to kind of start in the present. You play this character in Marty Supreme, who is coming back to acting.

• 13:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 13:19Amy Poehler?

You are also doing that in a real way in the film. You haven't been in a movie for 10 years. And there's this really beautiful moment in the movie where the actress hears the response, and it's really cool, and, and has this feeling of like, just, I don't know, joy of being, doing something again. Did you feel that when you were making this movie?

• 13:45Speaker 02

I did. I did feel it. I was so, um.

• 13:50Speaker 02

I don't know. It was like such a special group. You know, sometimes you do a project and you're like, oh, this feels really special, you know, feels like it feels like we're making something worthwhile. I don't know if people will like it or not, but it's like a real swing and everyone's great at their job. And, and so I was like, wow, I think I missed this, you know, it was like, it really, it, it, it felt so, I don't know, like, not pedestrian. Like, it felt very unique and like, special.

• 14:21Amy Poehler?

So we had this thing where we talked to people, uh, behind their back, well, behind their back before they come on.

• 14:26Speaker 02

  Oh, boy. Okay.

• 14:27Amy Poehler?

And we talked to Josh Safdie.

• 14:28Speaker 02

  Amazing.

• 14:29Amy Poehler?

And what was it like to work with him? What, what kind of director is he? What was that experience like?

• 14:34Speaker 02

It's just great. I mean, he's brilliant and kinetic and, you know, what I love about working with him too, is you never quite know what he's going for.

• 14:45Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm.

• 14:45Speaker 02

So you never totally relax. You know, you're like, what is he actually saying? Like, what, what do I, or, or like he'll, you'll do something one way and then he'll ask you to do the exact opposite and then back to the first way. So you're like, what do you want? What are we going for? And I think that's by design, you know, to sort of unearth something surprising or very real.

• 15:09Amy Poehler?

Do you like that when people keep you challenged a little bit?

• 15:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:14Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 15:14Speaker 02

  I do.

• 15:15Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Cause it's like a trust that they feel like you can handle it.

• 15:18Speaker 02

As long as I think they're a good director.

• 15:23Amy Poehler?

Right. Because when someone's doing it, when you're, I'm sure you've had this happen. There's no worse feeling in any job that you do, anywhere where you show up where you're like, uh oh, the person in charge is not ready or.

• 15:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:36Amy Poehler?

  Good.

• 15:37Speaker 02

It's just, I think what happens as an actor on that set is you. Become risk averse.

• 15:44Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm.

• 15:44Speaker 02

You're like, I'm not gonna go too far out on a limb here cuz I don't know if I'm in safe hands or not.

• 15:49Amy Poehler?

Well, are you the kind of person that would take over a situation if there wasn't a good captain? No.

• 15:54Speaker 02

I mean, I would like in the A D department. I do anyway. I'm like, guys, come on, let's go. What are we doing?

• 16:00Amy Poehler?

  Me too.

• 16:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:02Amy Poehler?

I actually, it's actually like a problem I have to work on, which is like, stop trying to shape the day.

• 16:07Speaker 02

Right. I mean, I just like, I think I have an efficiency issue, you know? And like when I, I think what also really messed me up was when I went to go do Glee and I saw how much they got done in one day.

• 16:23Amy Poehler?

TV is incredible. It's a machine.

• 16:25Speaker 02

It's like you are never sitting there.

• 16:27Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 16:28Speaker 02

You work all day, everything's so quick.

• 16:30Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 16:30Speaker 02

You leave the set and you're like, oh, my God, we accomplished so much. You know, we're like on a Marvel movie, you're like in your trailer for fourteen hours.

• 16:39Amy Poehler?

I know. And, and, and then even take, take TV and then go to S and L, which is an emergency room, which is like, we need something tomorrow.

• 16:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:48Amy Poehler?

No problem. And then in films, it's like six months out and you're like, we can't do it.

• 16:52Speaker 02

Is anyone gonna come and get me?

• 16:55Amy Poehler?

  I'm gonna die here.

• 16:57Speaker 02

I'm gonna die in my trailer.

• 16:59Amy Poehler?

I know time is really weird.

• 17:01Speaker 02

  It's weird.

• 17:01Amy Poehler?

Yeah, like time is your currency. Like, that's the only thing that's important left.

• 17:05Speaker 02

That's right. And we're not getting, they're not making any more of it.

• 17:09Amy Poehler?

So Josh was so, so, and, and he said something very sweet, like his question for you, which is such a director's question and such a question from a director whose film has just come out is, what did your son think of the movie? He wanted to know what Moses thought of the movie.

• 17:26Speaker 02

That's so sweet. He loved the movie.

• 17:28Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 17:28Speaker 02

He was, I mean, he, I went after the screening when I saw him, I said, he's like, it was incredible. It was, I mean, I had to kind of watch like this because there's some kissing.

• 17:37Amy Poehler?

  Sure.

• 17:38Speaker 02

So that he was not a big fan of.

• 17:40Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 17:40Speaker 02

But other than that, he loved it.

• 17:42Amy Poehler?

So many people project so much stuff on you, Gwyneth, like you get so much stuff projected on you. And you spoke at the Hollywood Reporter event, you were receiving an award, the Sherri Lansing, um, woman.

• 17:55Speaker 02

  Leadership.

• 17:55Amy Poehler?

Leadership award. And you spoke really beautifully about it, about this idea of versions of ourselves. Because I do think that every woman, every, everyone, man, woman, understands it like. Hopefully, if you're doing some work and you're having some life experience, you keep kind of shedding stuff and figuring out things about yourself. And having those versions kind of be out in the world is really difficult because people get to have opinions about it, but everybody understands that feeling.

• 18:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 18:21Amy Poehler?

Okay, with that in mind, I want to go to like the tiny doll, the little Gwyneth, because I, I kind of, I know people that knew you when you were little.

• 18:32Speaker 02

  You sure do.

• 18:33Amy Poehler?

You know, Maya Rudolph went to elementary school with you. What do you remember about being with her when, when you two were little, little people?

• 18:42Speaker 02

Well, our fathers were best friends from Tulane University.

• 18:45Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 18:46Speaker 02

And so Maya came to our elementary school right after her mother died, unfortunately. And I remember my dad saying, oh, my friends, you know, daughter's coming. And we just became great friends since seven years old.

• 19:04Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 19:05Speaker 02

You know, I think our, our senses of humor really developed together with, you know, our other best friend and, or a couple of them. And then they all went to high school together. I moved to New York. But stayed close with them forever and ever.

• 19:23Amy Poehler?

It must be nice to have Dick Rudolph, Maya's amazing dad, in your life too, because he knows so much about your dad who passed. Like, to have somebody who knew your dad when, that's always important, right?

• 19:33Speaker 02

It's so important. It's, it's like, it conjures them again.

• 19:37Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 19:37Speaker 02

You know, when they're in the room, they, they talk about him and then it's like all of a sudden you feel the person. It's so nice.

• 19:42Amy Poehler?

So then you go to New York, you go to Spence. What kind of high school, like, what, who are, what are you like in high school? Are you confident?

• 19:51Speaker 02

I think I, so I, I, we moved to New York City when I started seventh grade. I was coming from California, you know, so I was like a very rare bird. And middle school's so brutal.

• 20:04Amy Poehler?

I know. It's so tender. It's very tender.

• 20:09Speaker 02

  It's like scarring for life.

• 20:11Amy Poehler?

It is. And it's very, um, everybody's trying on a lot of things.

• 20:16Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 20:17Amy Poehler?

  Like, maybe I'm emo. Maybe.

• 20:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:19Amy Poehler?

Maybe I like, I only talk to animals.

• 20:22Speaker 02

Right. I was trying all kinds of things.

• 20:26Amy Poehler?

How old were you when you did your, was Hard Eight your first film with PTA?

• 20:29Speaker 02

No, my first film, I was probably eighteen, something like that. I had a few films where I had like one line. You know?

• 20:42Amy Poehler?

It's, sometimes it's hard to have one line.

• 20:44Speaker 02

  I know.

• 20:44Amy Poehler?

Cause there's a lot of pressure.

• 20:46Speaker 02

And you're like in the mirror saying your one line and saying it again.

• 20:50Amy Poehler?

Did you ever get fired from a job?

• 20:51Speaker 02

I got fi- I got fired from like, I worked in Madison Avenue at a toy store and I got fired. But you mean like a movie job?

• 20:57Amy Poehler?

Why did you get fired from the toy store? Do you remember?

• 21:00Speaker 02

Oh, cause I was wor- my parents always made my brother and I have jobs after school. And so I didn't know that like, oh, every, everyone doesn't just go on spring break. Like people have jobs.

• 21:15Speaker 02

So I went on spring break and then.

• 21:18Amy Poehler?

  Didn't tell anybody.

• 21:20Speaker 02

And then I came back and I remember the look on one of his face. She's like, no.

• 21:25Amy Poehler?

She was like, no toys were sold.

• 21:27Speaker 02

She's like, you, this is not how life works. She's like, you, you're, you're done here. I was so crushed.

• 21:32Amy Poehler?

  Oh, yeah.

• 21:33Speaker 02

I was like twelve. It was really, it was brutal.

• 21:36Amy Poehler?

  Twelve?

• 21:37Speaker 02

I should have sued her for child labor law violations.

• 21:42Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 21:42Speaker 02

But anyway, I, I feel like I got, I did get, you know, I was supposed to do a movie at, at one point where, and it was like right after the kind of conscious uncoupling thing with Chris. And there was like a lot of, a lot of harsh stuff in the press. And I think the distributor was like, this might be too. Too hot to touch.

• 22:08Amy Poehler?

  Interesting.

• 22:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:09Amy Poehler?

They were like, we don't need the heat.

• 22:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:11Amy Poehler?

  Interesting.

• 22:12Speaker 02

So that was great, because I was getting a divorce and then I got fired off. It was so awesome.

• 22:17Amy Poehler?

I'm sorry that my divorce is bothering you.

• 22:20Speaker 02

  Yeah, sorry.

• 22:20Amy Poehler?

I mean, if I can stay there for a second, boy, you were ahead of your time.

• 22:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:27Amy Poehler?

  You really were.

• 22:29Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 22:29Amy Poehler?

  Because you gave.

• 22:30Speaker 02

  Which was good and bad.

• 22:31Amy Poehler?

I know, it's probably not easy. I think you've been in that position before, but you, you, like, you gave a war, are you ga- and it wasn't your term, it was a term you were talking about.

• 22:41Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 22:43Amy Poehler?

To, to like bracket this idea that if you want to, you can try to make the dissolution of a marriage be one that isn't deeply painful.

• 22:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:57Amy Poehler?

You can try your best. You can have all of the feelings, but you can still try together to make like a conscious effort to do that. That's what you were talking about. And it's really interesting that people had such big reactions to that.

• 23:12Speaker 02

Huge. Because I think, like, say you had, had a really nasty divorce. Or your parents had had a really nasty divorce. And then you hear this idea that like, you don't ha- it doesn't have to be done this way. I think the implicit learning is like, oh, fuck, like, they're saying I did something wrong, like.

• 23:33Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 23:34Speaker 02

And, which of course was not the intention, but I think, of course, that, I mean, that makes sense to me, like, oh, no, like, is, is the inference that I messed someone up? Like, that's not a nice thing to contemplate. So I do understand why it was so personal for people, because it was, like.

• 23:53Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 23:53Speaker 02

You only get, see that kind of reaction when it's personal.

• 23:57Amy Poehler?

So true. And I think too, you know, we all, we're all, like, when we're defensive.

• 24:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:02Amy Poehler?

About anything, it's saying a lot about, about something.

• 24:04Speaker 02

  Yeah. And when we're hurt.

• 24:06Amy Poehler?

  When we're hurt.

• 24:06Speaker 02

We say things we don't mean, you know, we get angry, we respond, like.

• 24:10Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 24:10Speaker 02

  That's human, that's humanity.

• 24:12Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Comedy is a little bit interesting in this way too, which is like, what we ridicule, like, what we make fun of. It says so much about us, like what we laugh at makes so much about us, what we think is, and. It's, it's, it tells on you, like it really tells on you.

• 24:28Speaker 02

  Totally.

• 24:28Amy Poehler?

  Um.

• 24:29Speaker 02

  You reveal yourself.

• 24:30Amy Poehler?

  You do.

• 24:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:31Amy Poehler?

Um, and I have to say, I've always really admired your sense of humor about people's reactions to things, like you have to, you have to kind of have it. And we got to experience, I mean, we, we, I got to do SNL with you and see how funny you were. And it was weird.

• 24:52Speaker 02

  We had fun.

• 24:52Amy Poehler?

We did have fun. I was just thinking today about the stuff that we did together. Do you remember?

• 24:57Speaker 02

  I was thinking about that.

• 25:00Speaker 02

I was thinking about that sketch we did where Will played our dad.

• 25:04Amy Poehler?

Yeah, so Will was our angry dad.

• 25:05Speaker 02

And we were like gangster teenagers, like thinking we were, we were gangsters.

• 25:10Amy Poehler?

Yeah, like I think the joke of the scene was we just quietly ate dinner. We were like scraping.

• 25:14Speaker 02

Yeah, we would, we would like have an outburst and then go back to like quietly eating like awkward teenagers with the family. The second time I was definitely less nervous. The third time I was, yeah, I feel like I got to sort of enjoy it. And it was fun to like meet different incarnations of the cast and stuff. And like, I think I was on like Jimmy's first season.

• 25:35Amy Poehler?

I know there was a sketch with you and Dratch and Jimmy when they used to do like Sully and Denise, like Boston teens.

• 25:42Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 25:43Amy Poehler?

  They were at the prom.

• 25:44Speaker 02

Oh, my God, that's right. I totally forgot about that.

• 25:47Amy Poehler?

And you did a pretty good Boston accent, I have to say.

• 25:49Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 25:49Amy Poehler?

  It's not easy.

• 25:50Speaker 02

It isn't easy. Now I married a guy from Boston, so.

• 25:53Amy Poehler?

Does he, does he, I mean, Bostonians are really picky about the Boston accent, you know?

• 25:58Speaker 02

Well, there's different kinds. There's sort of the patrician one and then there's like.

• 26:01Amy Poehler?

  Which is pretty much gone.

• 26:02Speaker 02

  Pretty much gone.

• 26:03Amy Poehler?

The Kennedy one is kind of gone.

• 26:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:06Amy Poehler?

And the, there's this like kind of your local.

• 26:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:09Amy Poehler?

  Dunkin' Donuts.

• 26:10Speaker 02

My husband doesn't have really a Boston accent, except like on O words. Like he's like stalk.

• 26:17Amy Poehler?

  He says stalk?

• 26:18Speaker 02

Yeah, you can just like, it's like very.

• 26:20Amy Poehler?

  Oh, that's nice.

• 26:21Speaker 02

Yeah, he's like socks. It's just subtle, but it's there.

• 26:25Amy Poehler?

Totally sucks. I get it when I get a little angry or a little tired.

• 26:31Speaker 02

  You do?

• 26:32Amy Poehler?

Mm-hmm. I had a hard time when I would do Parks and Rec with the word, um, I still have a hard time with it. Government.

• 26:38Speaker 02

How do you say it in the?

• 26:39Amy Poehler?

Cause I want to say government.

• 26:41Speaker 02

  Right.

• 26:42Amy Poehler?

Like I want to gov, I want to skip over the E R N. I want to get rid of the R.

• 26:46Speaker 02

  Yeah, get rid of it.

• 26:46Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, who cares?

• 26:47Speaker 02

Who cares? Say it your way.

• 26:54Speaker 03

• 29:12Amy Poehler?

Okay, you're an actress. You do 15 movies in five years.

• 29:16Speaker 02

  Wow, that's psycho.

• 29:19Amy Poehler?

  I mean, babe.

• 29:23Speaker 02

  That's problematic.

• 29:24Amy Poehler?

  How did you do that?

• 29:25Speaker 02

I have no idea. Probably why I quit for 10 years afterwards. I was like, no, I'm not doing this.

• 29:33Amy Poehler?

  No, 15.

• 29:34Speaker 02

  That's insane.

• 29:36Amy Poehler?

  Can you imagine?

• 29:37Speaker 02

I just like, but like, this sort of touches back on what we were talking about, which is, I didn't feel like I knew myself and had the agency to say,

• 29:46Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 29:47Speaker 02

no. I felt like I better just keep going and going and going. And I didn't bring a lot of strategy to it, you know?

• 29:55Amy Poehler?

Yeah, well, you don't know what you don't know. Like, we can't be tough on ourselves. We were, you know, you're trying to figure out, especially in your twenties. I mean, your twenties is, I think, a really difficult decade.

• 30:05Speaker 02

Oh, my gosh, it really is.

• 30:07Amy Poehler?

  It is.

• 30:08Speaker 02

Then there's so, it's just, you don't know at all who you are.

• 30:11Amy Poehler?

If there's a problem, do you like people, how do you like people telling you about a problem? Let's say, um, I'll make up a problem. Like, let's say someone, uh, isn't, isn't gonna show up for something that you wanna do. Like, your, your schedule to do something today and it's not gonna happen. How do you like being told about the problem?

• 30:31Speaker 02

  Just straight up.

• 30:31Amy Poehler?

Yeah, that's what I suspect from you.

• 30:33Speaker 02

I don't wanna preamble. I don't want you to soften the language. Just be direct.

• 30:37Amy Poehler?

Same, a direct approach. It's always, and, and are you direct with other people?

• 30:44Speaker 02

  Yes, now I am.

• 30:46Amy Poehler?

  And?

• 30:46Speaker 02

  I didn't use to be.

• 30:47Amy Poehler?

Do they, do you, what do you do when you notice that your directness makes them uncomfortable? What do you do with their uncomfortable feeling?

• 30:57Speaker 02

Well, I'm a recovering codependent, so I used to do anything and everything, not to say the thing that would make the waters choppy. And then I realized how many more problems I caused, like, real problems, you know?

• 31:15Amy Poehler?

I so relate. Can you say more about this?

• 31:17Speaker 02

Yeah, like, I think. When you don't say what needs to be said in the moment to spare somebody else's feelings, first of all, like you're rejecting the truest part of yourself. And then it's going to come out another way. And that's like, you'll end up being dishonest. You'll end up not saying what needs to be said. You'll end up stringing out some lame relationship for eight extra months.

• 31:39Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 31:40Speaker 02

And treating them not so nicely because you have stuck yourself in something, you know, you just make a mess.

• 31:45Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 31:46Speaker 02

So I think around the time I turned 40 is when I started to move into this, like, I really need to stop doing this. And I worked with a coach on how to hold the uncomfortable feelings of somebody else and disappointing somebody else. I really had a problem with it with men, like when I worked with men, really hard time disappointing them or saying something that wasn't aligned with their version of things. And, and now, I don't know. And then it's so self honoring when you just speak the truth and you can do it very kindly. Like, and it's also not your responsibility to take care of somebody's feelings when you've simply said the truth.

• 32:30Amy Poehler?

It's a huge, not just women, everyone needs to learn it, but especially when you learn as a woman our age, that people are responsible for their own feelings. It sounds like a very simple thing, but it's very, very hard to learn.

• 32:44Speaker 02

  Yep, yep, yep, yep.

• 32:53Amy Poehler?

Now that you're in a new film, like are you able to look back at some of the films that you've been in and see, like be kinder to yourself about stuff? Like, are you able to be a little bit sweeter to yourself about anything?

• 33:05Speaker 02

Yeah. I mean, I think as far as the work is concerned, I think that, that I had such a long break and. Things have changed and you know, it's like now I'm like the venerable old, you know, you know what I mean? And like I did this interview with Jacob Elordi the other day and he was like, you've done this and this and I'm like, fuck, I'm old as hell.

• 33:29Amy Poehler?

It's so weird. People are like, my mom, I remember.

• 33:32Speaker 02

  Yeah, my mom loves you.

• 33:35Amy Poehler?

When my mom was in high school, she loved SNL. I'm like, god damn.

• 33:39Speaker 02

Can I get a selfie for my mom? Like, how old am I? Like,

• 33:45Speaker 02

but I, I do think that, you know, there's, there's been a bit of a, it's so interesting because now I'm like, oh yeah, like I did these things that now, you know, at the time you don't think that they're gonna be,

• 33:57Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 33:58Speaker 02

whatever. And then it's like, you know, people send you 10 pictures every Halloween of Margot Tenenbaum costumes. Or like, people say like, oh God, I had a sliding doors moment where I X, Y, and Z. You know what I mean?

• 34:11Amy Poehler?

  Yes, cultural things have stuck.

• 34:13Speaker 02

Yes, exactly. And, and I, and oh, I worked with this great director in his first film and this one and his second. This one is first. I'm like, yeah, cool. Like I did do that stuff. That's neat, you know? And it feels like for the first time, I'm able to feel the impact of the work that I did earlier in my life.

• 34:32Amy Poehler?

Okay. So with that in mind, I'm going to do a quick speed round with you about your movies. Cause you've been in so many and I feel like you've talked about them forever. But here we go with speed round. Shakespeare in Love. What words help you get into a British accent?

• 34:50Speaker 02

You know, it's like the vowels, like you sort of have to change the placement of the vowels. Like, so any, any words like,

• 35:01Speaker 02

the A's, the O's and, and words like perfect.

• 35:07Amy Poehler?

Cold Mountain. How cold was the mountain?

• 35:09Speaker 02

  I wasn't in Cold Mountain.

• 35:11Amy Poehler?

  Oh, forget it then.

• 35:12Speaker 02

But thanks for thinking of Nicole Kidman. Bonus.

• 35:19Amy Poehler?

Wait, why did I think you were on Coal Mountain?

• 35:22Speaker 02

I don't know, but I'm so happy you did.

• 35:24Amy Poehler?

Eyes wide shut. What was it like working with your husband, Tom Cruise?

• 35:26Speaker 02

  Oh, he was hot.

• 35:28Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I bet. Iron Man. Um, is there a lot of waiting around? You answered that. That was my question. Is, is there a lot of waiting around on Iron Man?

• 35:36Speaker 02

  So much waiting.

• 35:38Amy Poehler?

Crafty must be good. Marvel crafty must be insane.

• 35:41Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 35:42Amy Poehler?

Oh, interesting. They cheap out on crafty.

• 35:44Speaker 02

You know what I have to say? I think like, I think snack foods can be dangerous.

• 35:51Amy Poehler?

And snacking is like, at least I, I know for me, is completely emotional.

• 35:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:58Amy Poehler?

  Completely emotional.

• 35:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, it is, isn't it?

• 36:01Amy Poehler?

Yeah, it's just like, if you're not having a cigarette or you're going for a drink.

• 36:05Speaker 02

  Those were the days.

• 36:06Amy Poehler?

I know. Remember cigarettes? We talk about it here and we know they're very bad for you, but God.

• 36:12Speaker 02

  God, that.

• 36:12Amy Poehler?

You came up with such a great time.

• 36:13Speaker 02

  I know, man, I.

• 36:16Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 36:17Speaker 02

You know what I decided? When I'm like 87, I'm gonna start smoking again.

• 36:21Amy Poehler?

Fantastic. I mean, I remember when we were in the 2000s, when there was a lot of that. And then also you were the first person to say the word macrobiotic diet. You were on a macrobiotic diet.

• 36:32Speaker 02

Yeah, that was, that was a great phase where it was like cigarettes and tofu with the brown rice and the seaweed. Like, I don't know what I was.

• 36:41Amy Poehler?

Just cleaning your house while it's on fire, kind of thing?

• 36:44Speaker 02

  Yeah, exactly.

• 36:44Amy Poehler?

Yeah, okay. Um, sliding doors, you, you mentioned it. Do you ride the subway?

• 36:50Speaker 02

Do I ride the subway? Yeah. I mean, I haven't in a while because I don't live in New York City anymore. But when I did, I took it all the time.

• 36:56Amy Poehler?

And do you have to go pretty incognito? Like, do you feel like you can kind of blend?

• 37:00Speaker 02

Yeah, I feel, don't you feel like New Yorkers are just, they don't care?

• 37:03Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Uh, contagion. Was it weird that everybody was watching it during the pandemic?

• 37:09Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 37:10Amy Poehler?

  Everyone was watching it.

• 37:12Speaker 02

  I know.

• 37:12Amy Poehler?

Everyone got really into dark shit.

• 37:15Speaker 02

  I know.

• 37:15Amy Poehler?

And it's like, they wanted to see.

• 37:19Amy Poehler?

  You dying.

• 37:20Speaker 02

  I know.

• 37:22Amy Poehler?

  Your character, your character.

• 37:23Speaker 02

  It was very.

• 37:24Amy Poehler?

  Weird.

• 37:25Speaker 02

  I know.

• 37:26Amy Poehler?

  Um, Royal Tenenbaums. Halloween costume.

• 37:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 37:32Speaker 02

  And so much more.

• 37:33Amy Poehler?

And so much more. You're smiling. What's your?

• 37:35Speaker 02

I just love, I really love that movie.

• 37:37Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, it's a great movie.

• 37:39Speaker 02

And I had such a good time making the movie.

• 37:41Amy Poehler?

Yeah. It's such a cool charac- she's so cool.

• 37:45Speaker 02

  So cool. She's so cool.

• 37:46Amy Poehler?

I know, with her wooden finger.

• 37:48Speaker 02

  I know.

• 37:49Amy Poehler?

  Our cig- talk about cigarettes.

• 37:51Speaker 02

I know. And I quit smoking and then I had to smoke in the movie and.

• 37:56Amy Poehler?

  And you were like, oopsie.

• 37:58Speaker 02

I was like, I guess I smoke again.

• 38:01Amy Poehler?

That, um, fur coat, whose idea was that the costume?

• 38:04Speaker 02

It's all Wes. Wes, Wes, Wes knows every, how he wants every single prop and costume and everything. He's so wonderfully specific. I loved that. Like, I loved stepping into this drawing, you know?

• 38:21Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 38:22Speaker 02

  Of his.

• 38:22Amy Poehler?

Yeah, that's what it felt like. It's so cool. Talented Mr. Ripley. Did you, speaking of clothes, did you have, use any of your own clothes in that film? Or did you keep any of the, you're so?

• 38:32Speaker 02

I should have kept, you know, I should have kept some, I wish I'd kept a couple, like one souvenir from every movie. But I never thought to do that at the time. I, I, Anne Roth, who's like the most legendary costume designer, did that movie.

• 38:48Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 38:48Speaker 02

And, um, so she was just so amazing. Oh, I love those costumes so much.

• 38:52Amy Poehler?

Legendary costume designers can also be really intimidating, like they, because they, they don't let you keep anything.

• 38:57Speaker 02

  That's true.

• 38:58Amy Poehler?

View from the top. Do flight, the flight attendants talk to you about that?

• 39:02Speaker 02

  They do.

• 39:02Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 39:03Speaker 02

That's the, that's the, that's the best part of having done that movie.

• 39:07Amy Poehler?

Do you ever think about, like, a fantasy other job you would do? Would there be a job, like, i- i- whether it's flight attendant or like where you would feel like you'd be good at it?

• 39:17Speaker 02

I would like to be a chef if I wasn't. Like, I think I could have done that. Well, I love cooking and food and.

• 39:23Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm.

• 39:24Speaker 02

Yeah, that, that would be, I, I could have like a little restaurant somewhere.

• 39:28Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 39:28Speaker 02

  You know?

• 39:29Amy Poehler?

  Um, Hook.

• 39:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:30Amy Poehler?

  Robin Williams.

• 39:32Speaker 02

Oh, my gosh. I, I didn't get to do.

• 39:35Amy Poehler?

I thought you were just about to say I wasn't in Hook.

• 39:37Speaker 02

  No, I wasn't.

• 39:38Amy Poehler?

  Panicking.

• 39:40Amy Poehler?

Fanagin, don't, don't think I will forever think all my whole life that I said you were in Cold Mountain.

• 39:48Speaker 02

  Well.

• 39:48Amy Poehler?

I just want you to know.

• 39:49Speaker 02

  This is an honest mistake.

• 39:51Amy Poehler?

  I mean.

• 39:51Speaker 02

Nicole Kidman and I are very interchangeable. Thank you very much.

• 39:58Amy Poehler?

But Hook, did you work with Robyn?

• 40:00Speaker 02

  No, I didn't.

• 40:01Amy Poehler?

Did you get to know him?

• 40:03Speaker 02

You know, I only got to know him a bit when Good Will Hunting came out because I was dating one of the people who wrote that movie and was in that movie at the time.

• 40:14Amy Poehler?

  We're well aware.

• 40:15Speaker 02

And so I got to know him then.

• 40:17Amy Poehler?

So you guys were dating during Good Will Hunting? Fantastic Boston movie.

• 40:20Speaker 02

  After.

• 40:21Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 40:21Speaker 02

But when it was coming out.

• 40:23Amy Poehler?

And so he was around for that press and stuff.

• 40:26Speaker 02

  Yeah, exactly.

• 40:26Amy Poehler?

Yeah, he's so good in that movie. That movie really is.

• 40:29Speaker 02

I love that movie. It's a perfect movie.

• 40:32Amy Poehler?

I agree. It's a fantastic movie. And it's so, um, uh, it's so, uh, uh, like rainy day movie. It's like a rainy day movie.

• 40:44Speaker 02

And, um, and, um, Elliott Smith, who did all the music and Gus, like, it's just perfect. I love it so much.

• 40:51Amy Poehler?

What's a rainy day, what's a movie that when it comes on, you're like jackpot, I'm gonna watch it? Like a rainy day, you know, a plane movie, something if you're like, I gotta watch this.

• 41:03Speaker 02

Like all the eighties movies, you know?

• 41:06Amy Poehler?

  Like what?

• 41:07Speaker 02

Like Santa Claus Fire. I will never not watch that if it's on.

• 41:11Amy Poehler?

I, you know, getting back to Rob Lo, Rolo, as we called him on set, I would just sometimes like sit there and.

• 41:17Speaker 02

  Rashida always said.

• 41:20Amy Poehler?

He loves it and he's never had a, he's never really had a nickname, he said.

• 41:24Speaker 02

And the best thing is it like didn't spread as much as you guys tried to make it a thing.

• 41:30Amy Poehler?

  We all call him Rolo.

• 41:31Speaker 02

I know, but it didn't like.

• 41:32Amy Poehler?

  But didn't go outside.

• 41:33Speaker 02

You know what I mean? And he really, I think, wants it to go outside.

• 41:38Amy Poehler?

  He's, he's like, I've never had a nickname.

• 41:39Speaker 02

  I know, he loves it.

• 41:41Amy Poehler?

I remember like the first day on set, me saying to Rolo, it was his birthday and he was shooting on his birthday and I was like, oh, have you ever been on set for your birthday? And he was like, yes, like 400 times. And I was like, right, you've had a long career. Um, St. Elmo's Fire, Billy.

• 41:58Speaker 02

  Rolo as Billy.

• 42:00Amy Poehler?

Rolo as Billy. Bad boy, can't change him.

• 42:03Speaker 02

  Heaven.

• 42:04Amy Poehler?

  Heaven.

• 42:05Speaker 02

He was never my celebrity crush.

• 42:07Amy Poehler?

  Who was?

• 42:08Speaker 02

I mean, well, Keanu Reeves was my first, like, real. But when I watched St. Elmo's Fire, like, I wanted to, like, I would have gone with Judd Nelson.

• 42:17Amy Poehler?

Oh, interesting. You wanted them more professional.

• 42:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:20Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, Billy was too hectic.

• 42:21Speaker 02

You know, really, like, smart and cheater. Like, that was my type.

• 42:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:29Amy Poehler?

Also, when you rewatch that movie, it's like everyone is so dressed so professionally.

• 42:33Speaker 02

  I know.

• 42:34Amy Poehler?

Every, we really did dress like, we were, when we were in our twenties, we dressed like we were sixty-year-olds.

• 42:40Speaker 02

Yeah, the eighties was it. And it's happening again now. Do you know, like, not the Wall Street thing, but sort of like this, sort of grandma chic, like, all the, all the hipster cool kids are sort of, you know, it's like the soft, everything's soft shoulders.

• 42:56Amy Poehler?

  You tell me.

• 42:56Speaker 02

  Knitted things and.

• 42:58Amy Poehler?

I got a quarter zip just for this interview, so you tell me.

• 43:01Speaker 02

  It's looking really good.

• 43:02Amy Poehler?

  Thank you so much.

• 43:02Speaker 02

  You're welcome.

• 43:03Amy Poehler?

Um, okay, and Han, both Han, you brought up Rashida. Both Rashida and Han love you and talk about how fun it is to hang with you. And, and how, like, they both, you know, and, and they're, I think, representative of a lot of people who kind of want to know what you think about things because they trust your style, they trust your, what you said, like, the work you try to do to figure out what is the best thing of things. And it's not even about the things, it's just like, is there someone who's keeping an eye out? Um, keeping an eye out and figuring out, like, is there a better way to do something?

• 43:43Speaker 02

  Yes, that's.

• 43:44Amy Poehler?

  You love that.

• 43:45Speaker 02

  Love that.

• 43:46Amy Poehler?

Where do you think that comes from?

• 43:48Speaker 02

I think I'm an Enneagram one.

• 43:50Amy Poehler?

  Okay jackpot, here we go.

• 43:52Speaker 02

So like, I'm always trying to improve everything.

• 43:55Amy Poehler?

Great. So for people, and I don't know anyone who's listened to this who hasn't, hopefully. What is Enneagram one? How would you describe?

• 44:03Speaker 02

Are you into the Enneagram thing?

• 44:04Amy Poehler?

  Very much.

• 44:05Speaker 02

  Again.

• 44:06Amy Poehler?

Okay, do you want to guess my number? Nobody ever gets it right.

• 44:09Speaker 02

  God.

• 44:11Amy Poehler?

Here we go. I'm always, I always get the wrong, I always, people guess the wrong number, which saddens me. Cause I love, I love, yes.

• 44:21Speaker 02

Can I ask you some questions?

• 44:22Amy Poehler?

  Please.

• 44:23Speaker 02

Okay, like, how would you describe yourself as someone who really enjoys a dinner party?

• 44:31Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 44:32Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 44:34Speaker 02

Would you describe yourself as somebody who is very focused on achieving?

• 44:42Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 44:45Speaker 02

  Are you a peacemaker?

• 44:48Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 44:51Amy Poehler?

You're talking about three, you're talking about nine, I'm neither one of those.

• 44:54Speaker 02

  I know, that's what I just gleaned.

• 44:55Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 44:57Speaker 02

  Um, so, how?

• 45:00Amy Poehler?

  I have a peacemaker wing.

• 45:03Speaker 02

Okay, ah, so you're a one. You're not a one with a two wing?

• 45:09Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 45:09Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 45:12Speaker 02

  You're not an eight.

• 45:13Amy Poehler?

  Yes, I am.

• 45:15Speaker 02

  Okay, you're an eight.

• 45:17Amy Poehler?

  Why do people know this?

• 45:18Speaker 02

You're an eight, you're an eight with a nine wing.

• 45:21Amy Poehler?

Yes, so I'm not a monster, right? Cause I got a little peacemaker in me.

• 45:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:25Amy Poehler?

  But I'm a, I'm the, I'm a challenger.

• 45:28Speaker 02

  I, okay.

• 45:29Amy Poehler?

And I, and it's, I, I, I think I hide it, but I definitely relate to all of that feeling of like, authority stuff and challenging a little bit and wanting to lead and want, and feeling very happy with direct people. Like I'm, I'm like you, like I really like when people tell me the truth and are direct, I can handle it all day long.

• 45:48Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 45:49Amy Poehler?

But when people come sideways, I'm like, what's going on?

• 45:51Speaker 02

Yeah, it's such a bad, icky feeling.

• 45:54Amy Poehler?

Yeah, and I love Enneagram ones because ones are on it.

• 45:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, we're on it.

• 46:01Amy Poehler?

And. They believe in like getting it right. They're the hardest on themselves.

• 46:06Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 46:06Amy Poehler?

They are really hard on themselves.

• 46:08Speaker 02

Um. But we are trying to make things better, right? We're the reformer.

• 46:13Amy Poehler?

So you're always and I've always been like refining to figure out what is a better way to get efficient? Like to do it like.

• 46:21Speaker 02

Yeah, to improve yourself, to feel contentment, to, you know, reduce inflammation, to be a good partner, to be a good divorce person.

• 46:32Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Okay. So with your striving for perfection in mind, I have another one more speed round.

• 46:39Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 46:39Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 46:40Speaker 02

  Perfection speed round.

• 46:42Amy Poehler?

Here we go. Make it perfect.

• 46:45Amy Poehler?

Um, cold plunge, lot of controversy about whether or not it's right for women. I said that I do it and there were a lot of comments saying it's not good for women. Do you do it? Do you like to do it? How do you feel about it?

• 46:55Speaker 02

Uh, I do do it more sparingly. Like my husband does it every single day. So I spent a lot of time researching this and what I think I understand that the net net of it is cold plunging is not unilaterally terrible for women, but we kind of need to listen to ourselves and maybe not the water quite as cold as the men.

• 47:18Amy Poehler?

  Like that.

• 47:19Speaker 02

Maybe not quite as long as the men. Um, and, you know, to just be mindful of where, where we are, you know, if we're exhausted and, you know, because it can be quite taxing on the body, but it's still, there are still benefits for us.

• 47:34Amy Poehler?

Speaking of temperature, what do you like for your sleeping temperature?

• 47:38Speaker 02

Well, the older I get, the colder I like it.

• 47:40Amy Poehler?

  Me too.

• 47:41Speaker 02

Um, I like, you know, in the sixties.

• 47:44Amy Poehler?

  Yeah. Me too.

• 47:45Speaker 02

  Ooh, cozy.

• 47:48Amy Poehler?

  Alcohol after 50.

• 47:51Speaker 02

Oh, why did they have to ruin it for us?

• 47:54Amy Poehler?

  I know. It's like, it's a disaster.

• 47:57Speaker 02

  Such a bummer.

• 47:59Amy Poehler?

  Coffee?

• 48:00Speaker 02

Yes, big time. I'm a big coffee drinker.

• 48:03Amy Poehler?

Uh, how do you, how do you drink your coffee?

• 48:05Speaker 02

  With ha- raw heavy cream.

• 48:08Amy Poehler?

  What?

• 48:09Speaker 02

  I know.

• 48:10Amy Poehler?

  Shocked.

• 48:11Speaker 02

  I know.

• 48:11Amy Poehler?

That's very New York of you and not California.

• 48:13Speaker 02

  I know.

• 48:13Amy Poehler?

  Good job.

• 48:14Speaker 02

I'm, I'm like the alt, I'm not the alt milk queen.

• 48:17Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, same.

• 48:19Speaker 02

Yeah. Oh, do you have regular milk?

• 48:20Amy Poehler?

  I have.

• 48:21Speaker 02

  Or cow milk?

• 48:22Amy Poehler?

  I have half and half.

• 48:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:23Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 48:24Speaker 02

  No shame in it?

• 48:24Amy Poehler?

But I don't really do coffee. I do tea.

• 48:27Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 48:27Amy Poehler?

Because coffee is a little. Very English.

• 48:31Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 48:32Amy Poehler?

  Okay, lemon water.

• 48:34Speaker 02

  Love it.

• 48:35Amy Poehler?

Great. Bone density. What are we gonna do about it?

• 48:38Speaker 02

We are gonna, we're gonna, you know, talk to our doctor about potential estrogen supplementation.

• 48:46Amy Poehler?

  Uh, totally.

• 48:47Speaker 02

  We're gonna do heavy weights.

• 48:48Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 48:49Speaker 02

  Lots of heavy weights.

• 48:50Amy Poehler?

  Are you doing heavy weights?

• 48:51Speaker 02

Yeah. I do it on this giant, really heavy Pilates reformer thing called a Legree.

• 48:57Amy Poehler?

  Fantastic.

• 48:58Speaker 02

  That seems to be good.

• 48:59Amy Poehler?

  Right now.

• 48:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:59Amy Poehler?

  Giant reformer.

• 49:01Speaker 02

It's called the Legree. It's very, very good. And we're gonna gag down protein 70 times a day.

• 49:08Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 49:11Amy Poehler?

Bone broth? Has that come and gone?

• 49:14Speaker 02

Bone broth is great. I still, I still like bone broth. I,

• 49:19Speaker 02

I, I think it's, it's fantastic for your gut. It's full of protein and collagen, all the things. For some reason, people thought I only drank bone broth.

• 49:28Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 49:28Speaker 02

I, I'm, but I'll have it as like a cup of tea in the afternoon. That's my favorite way to have it.

• 49:33Amy Poehler?

Interesting. Uh, sleep routine. Talk me through it.

• 49:37Speaker 02

Okay, so I have to take a bath every night and.

• 49:41Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 49:42Speaker 02

  Yeah. Have to, non-negotiable.

• 49:44Amy Poehler?

  Interesting.

• 49:45Speaker 02

And if there's not a bathtub, then I have to shower. Like I gotta get the day off with water. And I think part of my good sleep routine is eating dinner early, so not going to bed on a full stomach.

• 49:54Amy Poehler?

Yes. What time do you like to eat dinner? I like it at six.

• 50:00Speaker 02

  Okay, me too.

• 50:01Amy Poehler?

I make my reservations at 6:00 PM.

• 50:04Speaker 02

  So do I.

• 50:04Amy Poehler?

  I love it so much.

• 50:05Speaker 02

  So great.

• 50:07Amy Poehler?

And I honestly, sometimes I like to be the first person in the restaurant.

• 50:11Speaker 02

  I was last night.

• 50:12Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 50:13Speaker 02

  I did 5:45 last night.

• 50:14Amy Poehler?

  Incredible.

• 50:15Speaker 02

  I know.

• 50:16Amy Poehler?

To be in bed and have eaten by eight o'clock.

• 50:18Speaker 02

  Oh, is there anything better?

• 50:20Amy Poehler?

No, I think about bedtime all day.

• 50:22Speaker 02

  Me too.

• 50:22Amy Poehler?

  I love it so much.

• 50:25Speaker 02

And then Brad and I usually watch something in bed, which I know you're not supposed to do. I know, but you know, it's so deeply relaxing to me, like get in there in a cold room and like watch some serial killer. Doing something so great. And then, you know, go to sleep and then, oh, I have mouth tape and earplugs.

• 50:47Amy Poehler?

  Mouth tape?

• 50:48Speaker 02

Yeah, I'm big into the mouth tape.

• 50:50Amy Poehler?

I know that's controversial too, mouth tape, because there's a whole mouth tape movement. There's pro, there's, but, but mouth tape is helpful. Do you, are you a grinder?

• 50:59Speaker 02

  I'm a grinder.

• 50:59Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 51:00Speaker 02

So it's helpful for me. Also, I really believe that there's no one size fits all solution. Like, we're all so different.

• 51:07Amy Poehler?

  Totally.

• 51:07Speaker 02

We have such different genetics, different phenotypes, different tolerances, allergies, toxic loads. Like, we're all, this idea that one thing works for everyone, I think is not true.

• 51:18Amy Poehler?

See, this is why we love you, Gwyneth. You, it's true. You just said all the stuff and it is like.

• 51:25Amy Poehler?

  That you're.

• 51:28Amy Poehler?

You are not selfish. You are not a gatekeeper.

• 51:31Speaker 02

  No, that I am not.

• 51:33Amy Poehler?

You're like, I'm trying this. Would you like to try this? I don't think this works, but who knows?

• 51:38Speaker 02

  Right.

• 51:38Amy Poehler?

You are, it's interesting. It's kind of like the, the, um, even though you're, maybe consider yourself a person who's trying to get it right. You're not afraid to like try and fail with things and you share it with us.

• 51:50Speaker 02

  For sure.

• 51:51Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 51:51Speaker 02

Yeah, I, I believe in, I mean, also because I'm such a researcher and such a guinea pig, like I want to share. I want to share the learnings, then take it or leave it.

• 52:02Amy Poehler?

Hmm, okay. And then the last thing I'm going to ask you about is, um, what is making you laugh?

• 52:09Speaker 02

So the thing that's made me laugh the hardest in like the past year?

• 52:15Speaker 02

When was the SNL thing that I lazily did not go to? Cause I.

• 52:20Amy Poehler?

You didn't go to the SNL 50th?

• 52:21Speaker 02

  No.

• 52:21Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 52:22Speaker 02

I know. It was a mistake and I regret it. So I just want to say that out loud.

• 52:26Amy Poehler?

You were like, oh, that's, you just thought like.

• 52:28Speaker 02

I was like, oh, that's fun.

• 52:29Amy Poehler?

  Another 50 years.

• 52:35Speaker 02

I was like, it seems like I had so much work at the time.

• 52:39Amy Poehler?

  True, it's gonna be hectic.

• 52:40Speaker 02

And I was like, I gotta go all the way to New York and I had something the next day. So I just couldn't go.

• 52:44Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 52:45Speaker 02

But I watched the thing at Radio City or whatever. What was the night before thing?

• 52:53Amy Poehler?

Yes, incredible music show the night before.

• 52:57Amy Poehler?

Wait, what are you gonna say? I love it. I don't know. I'm gonna, I'm gonna try to.

• 53:02Speaker 02

  Went Anna and Will.

• 53:04Amy Poehler?

  Yes!

• 53:04Speaker 02

  Did this church thing.

• 53:06Amy Poehler?

I talked to Anna about it. Bobby and Marty.

• 53:09Speaker 02

  Did you write that?

• 53:10Amy Poehler?

Oh, I wish. No, Paula Pell, the great Paula Pell.

• 53:13Speaker 02

  I.

• 53:14Amy Poehler?

Incredible writer on SNL and performer and Anna and Will do these Bobby and Marty cult.

• 53:21Speaker 02

I, I, and she starts singing Kendrick Lamar.

• 53:25Amy Poehler?

Yes, and what Anna said, which was so incredible is,

• 53:31Amy Poehler?

I gotta tell you something and I, I think I said this to Anna, but I just want to extrapolate for a second about it. To me, it was so, it was like such a win for the comedy kids because it was such a cool night. They literally followed Lauryn Hill. They came on after Lauryn Hill.

• 53:48Speaker 02

  I mean.

• 53:48Amy Poehler?

And their job was to settle everybody.

• 53:52Amy Poehler?

They had to go like, we're gonna wait, we're gonna wait until you stop talking. Quiet. They kept telling everyone to be quiet and it was so funny.

• 53:59Speaker 02

To me, that's like, that, I don't know what brand of comedy you call that, but it's like, that funny bones where, what, what, what was the Kendrick Lamar song? She's like.

• 54:11Amy Poehler?

We gotta, we gotta look at it for a second. It was, what was it?

• 54:16Amy Poehler?

What was it? Yeah, let's just watch it and I hope we can get it on, like, is the 50th SNL on?

• 54:24Speaker 02

It was like on Hulu or something like that.

• 54:27Amy Poehler?

  Here we go.

• 54:27Speaker 02

  Honestly, I.

• 54:47Amy Poehler?

  The commitment.

• 54:48Speaker 04

  I'm sorry.

• 54:49Amy Poehler?

  I know, the commitment.

• 54:50Speaker 04

What kind of humor? What do you call that? I'm sweating.

• 54:53Amy Poehler?

Like, to me, what I would call that, honestly, it's a great question. To me, I would call it like, committed.

• 55:05Amy Poehler?

We got a spit take, our first one.

• 55:14Amy Poehler?

We got our first spit take on Good Hang, and it's Gwyneth.

• 55:19Speaker 04

  It's all over my skirt.

• 55:22Amy Poehler?

Here we go, here's some Good Hang tissues.

  I can't breathe. It's so funny.

• 55:34Amy Poehler?

  Wait, let's play it again.

• 55:38Speaker 04

  Please don't, I'm sweating, I'm dying.

• 55:45Speaker 04

Oh my god, okay, so that's called sketch comedy?

• 55:53Speaker 04

  I need a fan.

• 55:55Amy Poehler?

  We're having a hot flash.

• 55:56Speaker 04

  Oh my god.

• 55:57Amy Poehler?

I'm the one in the quarters app.

• 55:58Speaker 04

A sketch comedy induced hot flash.

• 56:00Amy Poehler?

Yes, I feel like what you're talking about is real, which is, I feel like it is commitment. It's commitment, here, I'll take it.

• 56:08Speaker 04

I'll pick it up on my way out.

• 56:11Amy Poehler?

I feel like it's commitment. And I feel like it's character-based sketch comedy with music. That's how I would describe it.

• 56:20Speaker 04

So, to me, that's like, the funniest thing I've ever seen.

• 56:24Amy Poehler?

  I know what you mean.

• 56:25Speaker 04

I like, you know, it's like these weird, specific things.

• 56:28Amy Poehler?

And in person, it was so funny. That was really fun.

• 56:33Speaker 04

  It was really fun.

• 56:34Amy Poehler?

Gwyneth, I'm, thank you so much for coming on.

• 56:36Speaker 04

  Thank you for having me.

• 56:37Amy Poehler?

  You're such a good hang.

• 56:38Speaker 04

  You're a good hang.

• 56:41Amy Poehler?

Thank you so much, Gwyneth. It's so fun to hang with you. And you gave us this first bit take that we've ever had on the show, and we hope it's not the last. So, thank you so much. And you know, for this polar plunge, I want to talk about polar plunges. I want to talk about cold dips. There was a lot of controversy when I brought it up last time. And I am here to just remind you, you don't have to do it. I like it. It makes me feel alive slash like I'm gonna die. And I like it. I know it might not be good for all women, and maybe it's not good for me. I'll find out. Okay, but I'm gonna keep plunging.

• 57:23Amy Poehler?

And it does make me feel better. Okay. I don't know. I don't know what to say. I appreciate. I'm not telling anybody to do it. But if you want to do it, I think it's great. Okay, anyway. Thank you so much for listening. Thanks, Gwyneth, for joining us. And see you soon. Bye.
