• 2:37Amy Poehler?

Hi, it's nice to meet you.

• 2:39Speaker 01

Yeah, I've always seen you from afar and like I'm trying to send you very intense love and I don't know if I've fully found my way over, but um, but yeah, but honestly, I've been listening to your podcast before I go to sleep. So you've been spending a lot of intimate time with me.

• 2:53Amy Poehler?

Oh, yeah, that makes me feel happy. It's, I'm thrilled you wanted to talk today.

• 2:58Speaker 01

I'm so excited to talk about my, my wife.

• 3:01Amy Poehler?

She really is your wife. Like I, I was looking at the stuff that you and Rachel have done together and how long you've known each other and you really are, are married, legally married.

• 3:12Speaker 01

We're legally married. Yeah, it's, she's my wife. We talk every single day.

• 3:19Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 3:20Speaker 01

Well, if one of us doesn't respond, we'll just keep calling and it's hard to know when it's like an emergency or not, I would say with, with her. But yeah, she's an incredible human being and like I, you guys together is going to be magic.

• 3:35Amy Poehler?

Well, I'm thrilled to talk about her today with you, but before I do, let's not forget about Molly.

• 3:41Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 3:41Amy Poehler?

  What's Molly up to today?

• 3:43Speaker 01

I'm prepping a movie that I'm going to direct.

• 3:47Amy Poehler?

  Fantastic.

• 3:48Speaker 01

That I'm, that I'm actually going to send you, Amy, at some point, so we can.

• 3:52Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 3:52Speaker 01

And you have to tell me live on the podcast if you want to be a part of it or not. But uh, but I'm good. I just, I made hot tea and then I burned, I like burned my whole mouth and then spit it out all over the computer and that's kind of where I'm at right now.

• 4:07Amy Poehler?

Let's talk about tea for a second because I'm a tea girl more than a coffee girl. Are you too?

• 4:12Speaker 01

I like tea. I violently wake up and I want like seven coffees of matcha, then I have a tea around three.

• 4:18Amy Poehler?

Okay. And what kind of tea do you like to drink?

• 4:21Speaker 01

So I love this hot cinnamon spice Harley, uh, Harney and Sons tea, but usually English breakfast or peppermint. You?

• 4:30Amy Poehler?

Thanks for asking. I enjoy, my favorite tea is an Irish tea called Berry's Tea, which I highly recommend. And it's a black tea and I don't like any other, I mean, maybe occasionally I'll do a peppermint, like if I've had a, like a big meal.

• 4:48Amy Poehler?

  I just wanna chill out.

• 4:50Speaker 01

We needed to move through you in a way. Totally got it. Yeah.

• 4:53Amy Poehler?

Totally. But I've switched entirely from, I used to be kind of a coffee person and now I'm totally tea. And it's made a diff.

• 5:01Speaker 01

And you feel like that's changed your whole personality?

• 5:04Amy Poehler?

It definitely has changed my stomach's personality, cuz I used to have to drink coffee like it was melted ice cream, like tons of cream and sugar.

• 5:13Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 5:15Amy Poehler?

And now it's helped a lot to not have to get into that, like just to have that much shit in my stomach.

• 5:22Speaker 01

But I don't have to go to the bathroom every moment. Totally. I, I, uh, yeah, I moved back to New York and I was like, oh, it's, it's really fun to like drink so much coffee and then like be trying to make it home to your house. Like I was nostalgic living in LA for that, like, am I gonna make it home?

• 5:37Amy Poehler?

Yes. I mean, there, for people who, you know, and this happened, this happens in a lot of cities, but like you get to know where you have to quickly go to the bathroom. You have to learn. And in Los Angeles, you're kind of in trouble. You spend a lot of time in your car.

• 5:51Speaker 01

It's tough. A Sweetgreen, they're pretty kind at a Sweetgreen, I do have to say.

• 5:56Amy Poehler?

  They're sweet.

• 5:57Speaker 01

  Yeah, they're sweet.

• 5:59Amy Poehler?

So when, when was the first time you met? Tell us about your meet cue of when you met your wife?

• 6:04Speaker 01

So I met my wife, um, Emma Sullivan, the director of Shiva Baby, had a set of breakfast for me and Rachel. And we all ate and Rachel thought I was like a real actress cuz Rachel had just like been a stand-up and, and she, she was asking me a lot, like what it's like to be a real actress and, and lots of questions. And, um, and I was kinda like, I'm the normal, I'm just, I don't really get work and like work because I've been in like one movie. Um, but she, yeah, and then we like, we read the script together and she was so funny. And I had just never met like women my age that were that.

• 6:44Speaker 01

  Um, unapologetic, un- unapologetically ambitious.

• 6:49Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm.

• 6:49Speaker 01

Like, she is so honest about what she wants in her life and like, what she does, what she's trying to achieve, like her, what she does every day. And I would always hide that I wanted those things and I feel like it was just so inspiring.

• 7:04Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 7:04Speaker 01

But yeah, I agree. Like, I think she kind of showed me with like, with that film, she was trying out so many different things and you know, it's that movie's a lot about sexuality and all these things. But she just showed me, you don't have to fit in like some box. She was like, sometimes I want to do this, sometimes I want to do this and like, I don't know, I, I, when I was thinking about what I wanted to ask her, I was like, how did you have that confidence?

• 7:27Amy Poehler?

Like, that's exactly what I wanted to start with because, but it's a funny question, right? I've been doing this podcast for a while and there's people that come in and I want to say, how did you know what you knew? Like, like, like, how, how did, how did you get this sense of yourself? And it's a hard one to answer because it's sometimes it's just kind of the way that they came out into the world.

• 7:47Speaker 01

Totally. And she's still, speaking of what we're saying about containing multitudes, like she's still really vulnerable. But she's just, but I don't, the first time I met her, Amy, she was like, I wrote four scripts, I'm doing this, I want to do this. And like, I had just never seen anyone act that way because you think, oh, that's like, gonna show that you have a big head or something, but it's like, no, she wants to create things.

• 8:08Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 8:08Speaker 01

Um, but I don't know, it's, it's, you can get into it with her, but it's like, yeah, she wants to create things and she wants to have great sex. And she wants to have a great meal and she wants to cuddle with her friends. Like she wants all of those things and there's nothing wrong with that. And you don't need to choose one lane to be in or something.

• 8:25Amy Poehler?

Shiva Baby was made for $200,000?

• 8:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 8:30Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 8:32Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's crazy.

• 8:33Amy Poehler?

Well, and, and well, how much did it end up making?

• 8:36Speaker 01

And that all went to me, just to say.

• 8:38Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you have a, your quote was $199,000.

• 8:42Speaker 01

Yeah, I, I had only worked a little bit, but my quote was, um, I don't know how much it made, but it, uh, definitely not that much because it came out in COVID. We do have to say, Emma and I and Rachel always laugh that the movie is huge in London. We don't think, not a people don't know it in the States, but in London, we're huge.

• 9:03Amy Poehler?

You walk around and it's, it's like the Beatles.

• 9:07Speaker 01

In London, I'm like having to go like this, but everywhere else it's completely.

• 9:13Speaker 01

There must be a lot of like Jewish women who have sex at Chivas. I don't know.

• 9:18Amy Poehler?

Yeah, and they all live in London.

• 9:22Amy Poehler?

Okay, so just to be clear, your question for Rachel is what?

• 9:27Speaker 01

My question for Rachel is, people have said that you, from a young age, were very unapologetically ambitious. Where did that come from? Or how did you learn to be that way? Where did that instinct, where was the through line?

• 9:40Amy Poehler?

Great question. Okay, and then the last single thing, is there anything you want me to, any story you want me to prompt Rachel to tell? Because she's a very good storyteller, I've noticed, on these kind of things.

• 9:54Speaker 01

I'd love for you to ask her about the first time that she was fingered.

• 10:04Amy Poehler?

  Fantastic.

• 10:05Speaker 01

I'm sorry. I just, it's an incredible story, and she used to do it in, oh, and I'd also love you to ask her if she'll come back to stand up.

• 10:13Amy Poehler?

Great. So did she tell her fingering story on stage? Okay, great.

• 10:19Speaker 01

It's not like a violation. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You can say that Molly, or like someone was bringing up, you know, some of your first pleasuring experience or whatever, but, but I think her and I need to get back to stand up. I know they're famous actors now, but it's like, come on, we gotta see you on stage.

• 10:34Amy Poehler?

I know, they're so funny, and it, stand up is, it is, like, I want to talk to her about it, because as you know, like, and you know from being on stage, like, if you can be on stage and hang in there, you build a muscle where you can kind of almost, you can handle almost anything, almost anything.

• 10:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:52Amy Poehler?

It's so good talking to you. You've, in, in the course of us talking, you have, your hair has looked incredible down and also looks incredible up.

• 10:59Speaker 01

I have to be honest, it's a gorgeous up to. It's so dirty, but it's stunning.

• 11:05Amy Poehler?

  It is stunning.

• 11:07Speaker 01

Oh, and like, and then you've gotten like, perfect.

• 11:12Amy Poehler?

It looks like you're just ready to walk out into the streets of London and just be mobbed.

• 11:16Speaker 01

I gotta be, I gotta get to London. I just gotta get to London. All right, have a class.

• 11:22Amy Poehler?

Okay, thank you so much. It was so fun talking to you.

• 11:26Speaker 01

  Bye.

• 11:26Amy Poehler?

  Bye.

• 12:13Amy Poehler?

How do you like the height of this chair as a fellow shorty?

• 12:16Speaker 02

I love it. I love it. And I love that we're both short.

• 12:21Amy Poehler?

  Me too.

• 12:22Speaker 02

I always talk about, is it a short set or a tall set?

• 12:26Amy Poehler?

It's very true because we can't reach things. Things are too high for us. And also, I don't like feeling short.

• 12:34Speaker 02

No. Right now, I'm feeling very tall.

• 12:37Amy Poehler?

  OK, good.

• 12:37Speaker 02

  I'm feeling 5'6". We're both giving 5'6" right now.

• 12:41Amy Poehler?

We are? That's my dream. 5'6" is my dream, actually.

• 12:44Speaker 02

  Me too.

• 12:45Amy Poehler?

I'm with Rachel Sennott. She is here. Rachel, I'm so happy that you're here.

• 12:50Speaker 02

I am so happy that you're here, and so is my entire family. My dad was freaking out, and he was like...

• 12:56Amy Poehler?

  Tell me about your dad.

• 12:57Speaker 02

He... I'm addicted to him. I love my dad.

• 13:01Amy Poehler?

This is what is so incredible about people in their 30s. They love their parents.

• 13:07Speaker 02

You take a journey, and I literally just turned 30 like a couple of weeks ago. And I loved... It's almost like you have to go away and be like, I'm an adult. You don't even fucking know me. And then I like... Something shifted, and you're like, you're my friends.

• 13:27Amy Poehler?

You know what? It's actually... I do want to talk about that. That's actually really deep. It does happen. In your 20s, you have to kind of separate.

• 13:33Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 13:34Amy Poehler?

  And it's painful.

• 13:35Speaker 02

  It's painful.

• 13:35Amy Poehler?

  Was it painful for you?

• 13:37Speaker 02

Yes, and I'm like scared because I know of everything I've done. I'm like, both of my parents are absolutely listening to every second of this.

• 13:46Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 13:46Speaker 02

Other things, they're like, we'll skip that one. So I'm like, let me try to, let me try to.

• 13:50Amy Poehler?

Well, tell me about your parents. They are, what are they, what were they, what are they like? What did they do? What was their job? Because here's one of my highest compliments.

• 13:59Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 14:01Amy Poehler?

You seem like a Manhattan Nepo baby and you're not.

• 14:05Speaker 02

Girl, don't throw me. Thank you.

• 14:10Amy Poehler?

  Thank you. Congrats.

• 14:11Speaker 02

Thank you. I am maybe an insurance Nepo baby, basically in that my dad works in insurance and he did hook me up with car insurance multiple times. Cause I was driving around with a car with no insurance, getting in car accidents. And he was like, let me help you.

• 14:27Amy Poehler?

He was like, this is what I do.

• 14:28Speaker 02

This is what I do. So my parents both were accountants and they met when they were both accountants at the same firm.

• 14:35Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 14:36Speaker 02

And then, um, fell in love, dated secretly.

• 14:40Amy Poehler?

  Fun.

• 14:40Speaker 02

Because they were sort of like, we gotta keep it low key, which like you.

• 14:44Amy Poehler?

They're like, we don't want it to mess with the numbers.

• 14:46Speaker 02

We don't want it to mess with the numbers.

• 14:47Amy Poehler?

We don't want our romance to get, like to screw up the numbers.

• 14:50Speaker 02

Literally. By the way, they, when they got married, they got a mug that said, which doesn't make sense. A mug that said, beware of accountants, they multiply. Which I'm like, they don't. You two were already accountants and then you got together and none of your five children are accountants.

• 15:09Amy Poehler?

Well, excuse me, five children, that's still a lot of children. Where are you in the birth order of that?

• 15:14Speaker 02

  I'm second oldest.

• 15:16Amy Poehler?

  Ah, okay.

• 15:17Speaker 02

So they fell in love and they just started.

• 15:20Amy Poehler?

  They multiplied.

• 15:20Speaker 02

They, and they multiplied. They started popping up out. And I will say, I feel like they, they, having five or four siblings, but being in a big family is a huge part of who I am because I think it's like. Automatically, you have so many different personalities. It's like, if you put us all together, there's like, you could kind of make connections between like pairs, but some of it is really random. Like where you're like, "All of you guys?" And I think, like, my parents did a really good job raising us and, and sort of like, taking everyone, basically like, not putting anyone's needs above another.

• 16:03Speaker 02

Like, everyone's career and what everyone does is equally important. And like, you sort of had to like, you know, shout at the dinner table to be heard. And like, you, you automatically have to compromise because it's like, there, there's no way everyone's gonna be happy all the time.

• 16:22Amy Poehler?

Well, and you, you have two very right-brained parents, it sounds like, too. Like, so are you like, and you have pursued a very artistic path? In your family, with the siblings, does it go either way? There's some people that are like, strong in STEM, and numbers people, and other people that are artists?

• 16:38Speaker 02

We, I would say we've got, I'm gonna say, three artists. But, but, because I'm gonna say, my mom

• 16:46Amy Poehler?

  Secret artist?

• 16:47Speaker 02

Is, secret artist, like, she, she did like, my first play ever with me. I was like, "I really wanna audition for a play." And she was like, "I'll audition with you."

• 16:56Amy Poehler?

  This is so different.

• 16:58Speaker 02

So different. And she, and she like, sings and like, plays piano. So it's like, I feel like, the art was there. My dad, not an artist, but like, trying to make everyone else do art. So he like, forced me and my siblings to like, play in a quartet for our family.

• 17:14Amy Poehler?

  That's, that's very mathy, that's very number-y.

• 17:16Speaker 02

Yes, like, "You will play." Like, yes.

• 17:19Amy Poehler?

Music and instruments is still like,

• 17:21Speaker 02

  Still kinda mathy.

• 17:22Amy Poehler?

  An accountant's dream.

• 17:23Speaker 02

  That's totally, totally.

• 17:24Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 17:25Speaker 02

Versus, whatever the hell I'm doing. It's a little, it's a little more Lefty Lucy.

• 17:30Amy Poehler?

Well, what I love about what you just said, because it does feel like you're in a, you grew up in a family where you had to kind of, you know, you just have to make space for yourself.

• 17:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:39Amy Poehler?

You have to figure it out. Like you said, you have to kind of compete in a healthy way.

• 17:42Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 17:43Amy Poehler?

One of the things, or not, or not healthy. One of the things that I love about you, not knowing you, we're meeting for the first time, is that there's something about the way that you are in your own experience, like, your own body, that's very grounded and very, um, self-assured.

• 18:04Amy Poehler?

And it's kind of like you have it or you don't. It's like this ineffable thing where you just, you, you make us lean into you, Rachel. Like you, you're kind of yourself in real time and we're, and we all become very interested and curious about it. Like, there's not a grasping energy from you. You're kind of doing your thing and people are like invited to come along and.

• 18:26Speaker 02

That's really nice of you to say, and that means a lot coming from you. Cause you have, I feel like it's like in comedy and like I, I read your book. I read Tina's book when I was like in college and starting stand up. And like, I feel like especially when I think to like the beginning, when, when you're like the first, not the first women in comedy, but like you're forming a group. Like I feel like my friend group took so much inspiration from you guys of being like, I've got my girls. You know what I mean? And being like, I'll go to the weird open mic with you and the whatever. But like carving out that space for yourself and being like, you come to us as opposed to like,

• 19:08Speaker 02

trying to be a part of the other thing that you're like not necessarily invited to.

• 19:14Amy Poehler?

So let's get into, okay, we, we talked about your parents. You're in Connecticut, you grow up in Connecticut. And again, you seem like a Manhattan kid. Congrats.

• 19:22Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 19:22Amy Poehler?

Um, Connecticut is a strange state because it's like, where is it?

• 19:26Speaker 02

  Who is it that's happening?

• 19:27Amy Poehler?

Right, like Red Sox, Yankees, like what do you want?

• 19:30Speaker 02

Okay, and thank you for asking that, Red Sox. Red Sox, I got actually like absolutely, my dad reamed my ass because I put on my boyfriend's Yankees cap. I just thought it would be a little flirty and I picked up a face time for my dad and he was like, take that off right now.

• 19:47Amy Poehler?

Yeah, that's not, that's not okay.

• 19:48Speaker 02

  You can't do it.

• 19:49Amy Poehler?

No, that's not okay. So you're more on the Boston side, but you grow up there and you get to NYU.

• 19:54Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 19:55Amy Poehler?

Where is that jump from you like at the dinner table, being funny with your family and deciding, I want to get to NYU and like be a performer? How does that happen?

• 20:04Speaker 02

It, so I always wanted to like perform. I feel like I did the classic thing.

• 20:09Amy Poehler?

Well, wait, you were in plays.

• 20:10Speaker 02

I was forced, I was doing plays.

• 20:12Amy Poehler?

  You were in Les Mis.

• 20:13Speaker 02

I was in Les Mis. Wow. Yes.

• 20:16Amy Poehler?

  What part?

• 20:17Speaker 02

I was Madame Serdier, of course.

• 20:19Amy Poehler?

Wait, who? You just said it in a French way.

• 20:23Speaker 02

Madame Tannier. I was, I was, she was sort of, do you know the master of the?

• 20:28Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 20:29Speaker 02

  The, his wife.

• 20:30Amy Poehler?

Oh, the master of the house lady?

• 20:32Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 20:32Amy Poehler?

Okay, sorry, I should know her name.

• 20:34Speaker 02

No, she is the master of the house lady.

• 20:36Amy Poehler?

  You had the comedic part?

• 20:37Speaker 02

Yes, I had the comedic part. And you know, any time I was in a play in high school, they were like, shh, that's a witch. Or the head of the, like, the prostitute house. Like, it was really, it was like, that was the only parts I was getting cast in.

• 20:52Amy Poehler?

Why do you think that was? Why, as a little kid, do they, cause?

• 20:56Speaker 02

  Yeah, I know. I know.

• 20:58Amy Poehler?

But I, but I kind of know what you mean.

• 20:59Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 21:00Amy Poehler?

  It's usually the comedic part.

• 21:01Speaker 02

  Yes, yes.

• 21:02Amy Poehler?

Why were they, like, seeing some, like, were you, did you have, like, a maturity at age? Or you just, like, self-assured on stage? You know what I mean? Like, not nervous?

• 21:10Speaker 02

I think it was, like, I was not vocally talented. And loud. And I think, loud, and I think, like, I don't know, I, I look, I'm like, it was always like, and you're the little, the ratty little whatever. And I'm like, okay. I really, I, it, cause at that time, I want, I was like, obviously, I want to be Cosette. I want to be Eponine. I want to be, like, singing the pretty little voice. They heard me sing three bars, they said.

• 21:41Amy Poehler?

  But you're, but-

• 21:41Speaker 02

You're gonna speak the whole song.

• 21:43Amy Poehler?

And they're, they're usually the most boring of the songs.

• 21:46Speaker 02

  They are.

• 21:47Amy Poehler?

I mean, even though Eponine has some great songs, cause it has some great songs.

• 21:50Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 21:50Amy Poehler?

  Les Mis est incroyable, yeah.

• 21:52Speaker 02

They're bangers. And, and by the way, the girl who played Eponine in my high school, like, went on to play Eponine on Broadway. And I was like,

• 21:59Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 22:00Speaker 02

You know, Emily Bautista, I gotta hand it to you. You were meant for the part, voice, voice of an angel.

• 22:06Amy Poehler?

  Incredible.

• 22:06Speaker 02

  Incredible.

• 22:07Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 22:07Speaker 02

So I was like, I'm not taking it personally.

• 22:09Amy Poehler?

Can we talk for a second about loud?

• 22:12Speaker 02

  Loud.

• 22:13Amy Poehler?

Cause I'm, I'm relating. Like, I was a loud kid.

• 22:17Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:18Amy Poehler?

And there's something like underneath being like a loud young kid.

• 22:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:22Amy Poehler?

That's kind of can be very exciting, especially if you're like a young woman. Not always, sometimes people don't like it.

• 22:27Speaker 02

  Sometimes they hate it, yeah.

• 22:28Amy Poehler?

But it is like, it's like carving out space, like taking up space.

• 22:33Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 22:33Amy Poehler?

Somehow, and people saw that in you.

• 22:35Speaker 02

Yeah, and they were like, she's not afraid to, I guess, that or they were just literally like, we can't get her to shut up, like, just give her this part and maybe she'll lose her voice. Yelling on stage and then she won't be like annoying at home. But I do think you're right, it's like, you have to sort of like be loud first and then figure out how to make it like entertaining as you go. But I think once you like break that, I also like, I feel like I've always had like a loud laugh, which like, I've read about like your laugh at the table reads at SNL and whatever, and it's like, I think like, not being afraid to like bring joy into the space or be like, I don't know, once, once you start shouting, you're like,

• 23:19Speaker 02

I'm not gonna talk quiet, like, it's just, you break into that space and then you can refine what, what you're saying or how funny it is or whatever, but I think like, that instinct was always there.

• 23:32Amy Poehler?

Yeah, and that, and that brings you to NYU.

• 23:34Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 23:35Amy Poehler?

Where you kind of join this class of people who are now your friends and successful actors and actresses in their own right, who you meet, like, tell us about coming to NYU, like those early days there.

• 23:47Speaker 02

I, so I think I at first felt like I didn't fit in at all and I had like a really hard time because the acting program was very like, serious and it was very like Shakespeare and like, we're doing, we're like walking around the room and you're a cat and then you're like a chicken and I was like, but everyone's like crying while they do it and I'm like, what?

• 24:11Amy Poehler?

And you're like, what, what am I missing?

• 24:12Speaker 02

What am I missing? The money is gone, we've paid, so I gotta do something with this, but wow, this is crazy. Like, it was that, I was scared and I just felt, and, do you know what I mean? Like, it's like, and, and you're looking around and everyone's like so locked into it, so you're like, there's something wrong with me.

• 24:30Amy Poehler?

Do you think they were locked into it or was it like peer pressure to feel locked into it?

• 24:34Speaker 02

Cause I, now it feels like a cult, a little, where everyone was like, I'm crying as the chicken. I'm feeling the like, you know.

• 24:43Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 24:43Speaker 02

But I, I felt like, oh, there were a lot of opportunities that the school had, which was like, the plays, the, the, the school did shows that you could audition for. Didn't get into any of those. The school had like improv and sketch groups. I didn't get into any of those.

• 25:02Amy Poehler?

  Ah, really?

• 25:03Speaker 02

  Really.

• 25:05Amy Poehler?

Dang, I bet they're regretting that.

• 25:07Speaker 02

Probably not. They're prob- they're probably like, well, another year of doing our sketches.

• 25:13Amy Poehler?

  That's really, I'm really surprised.

• 25:14Speaker 02

I didn't, and Iowa Debré, who I met, didn't either. And that's when we first met was like at the auditions for those groups.

• 25:22Amy Poehler?

Sometimes that's just the best motivator.

• 25:24Speaker 02

Literally. I, I, by the way, I'm like, I always need, whenever like something doesn't work out for me, I'm like, thank God.

• 25:31Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 25:32Speaker 02

  Whenever I'm like-

• 25:32Amy Poehler?

  Rejection is God's protection.

• 25:34Speaker 02

Period. And also, it's like, whenever I'm flopping, I'm not scared. It's when I'm doing well, or then I'm happy, and when I'm terrified.

• 25:44Amy Poehler?

Okay, that is the best way to say it, Rachel, is that to flop and not be scared.

• 25:50Speaker 02

To flop and not be scared.

• 25:51Amy Poehler?

  That's a very powerful thing. It's, it's a super, it's a superpower if you can do it.

• 25:56Speaker 02

Because I, the best things happen to me right after I'm at rock bottom. Like whenever I'm like rejected hard, whenever like, I'm like, like in love with someone who like is treating me like garbage, that's when I fly. That's when, cause you sort of like, let go of everything and you're like, fuck it, I'm at rock bottom, I don't care, let's go. That's, that's a beautiful time. It's when I'm soaring that I start, I'm, I'm like, I'm soaring. The ground is really far away, I'm gonna fall. Like, and then I get in my head and that's when, yeah.

• 26:28Amy Poehler?

So you are auditioning, you and Io both not making what you want to make. What happens then?

• 26:34Speaker 02

Then I think that's when I started being like, okay, I have to find my own opportunities. And I think that's sort of when I like, started to find my friends and my community and doing stuff on our own. So I started like, I started doing stand-up.

• 26:48Amy Poehler?

So tell us about your first, like- Yeah, cause you were on a date? Is that true?

• 26:54Speaker 02

Yeah, so basically, this poor guy is like-

• 26:58Amy Poehler?

  He's also in Les Mis.

• 27:00Speaker 02

He was also in Les Mis. No, I feel bad because I'm like everywhere. It's like, I still know him. He like is, um, he is like a comedy producer, whatever. Great guy, but he basically, we went on like, one, I, I want to call it a date, but it was like, really like, we went to the dining hall and then he like fingered me, but it was, it was, I'm like, that was our date. But he's a lovely person. I, he's a lovely person. That's just college, you know? But do you know what I mean?

• 27:30Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 27:31Speaker 02

Yeah, sometimes that just happens. But so he was like, you should do stand up. I've been going to open mics. Do you want to come with me to one? And so.

• 27:39Amy Poehler?

Wait, and he was gonna perform?

• 27:41Speaker 02

And he performed. He did perform.

• 27:43Amy Poehler?

Okay, so he was like, do you want to come watch me perform?

• 27:45Speaker 02

He was like, do you want to come watch me perform, but do you want to go to?

• 27:48Amy Poehler?

Do you want to go to? Yes, and try it.

• 27:49Speaker 02

  He encour, he encouraged.

• 27:50Amy Poehler?

Got it, got it, got it.

• 27:51Speaker 02

Shout out. He encouraged. So we go to an open mic and I think I did stand up about like him fingering me like two days before. So I was, I was just like, I have no experiences other than this. It's like pretty like, I'm still like a freshman, like I'm like.

• 28:07Amy Poehler?

Can you tell us a little bit more about what you talked about? Would you be okay to tell us that?

• 28:11Speaker 02

Okay. I, well, I, this part, this is where I got into something that I think I've, I've hopefully grown out of, but I've, uh, the fingering was weird. And then my first joke, which I think he helped me write, was that it was like, or maybe I think maybe my friend, my friend Moss helped me write this part. Moss Paracone, very funny stand up and writer on SNL.

• 28:35Amy Poehler?

Who I just got to work with recently because I was just there and it was really fun to work with him.

• 28:39Speaker 02

  He's so funny.

• 28:40Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 28:41Speaker 02

So Moss and I would do open mics together too. So I think Moss actually helped me write this part of the joke, which was that like, he was fingering me and it was like trying to trick a vending machine.

• 28:52Amy Poehler?

  Great joke.

• 28:53Speaker 02

  Great joke.

• 28:54Amy Poehler?

  Great joke.

• 28:54Speaker 02

That I, I think all I brought to the story was like, it kind of hurt. And then he like, helped me write that part.

• 29:01Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 29:01Speaker 02

But I did that. And I got like, I also, it's like, you, your first open mic, you go onstage and you're like, also, I'm like, 18 years old, at like, a random open mic with like, guys from New Jersey. And I'm like, hi, it's my first open mic. So obviously, like, everyone, it, the room was

• 29:18Amy Poehler?

  Warm.

• 29:19Speaker 02

  Warm. The room was warm.

• 29:21Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 29:21Speaker 02

  It was toasty.

• 29:22Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 29:22Speaker 02

  So I go

• 29:23Amy Poehler?

  Filled with perverts.

• 29:24Speaker 02

Yeah, totally. Absolutely. So, and at the time, I'm like, I'm a genius? Saying a joke I didn't write, in a room full of six perverts? Who are all just like, maybe she'll only be here for one week and she'll kiss one of us.

• 29:39Amy Poehler?

  Totally.

• 29:39Speaker 02

So, at the time, I'm thinking like, I'm crushing. I am crushing. Um, so I do that joke, whatever, and I get that like, high of

• 29:50Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 29:51Speaker 02

  Performance.

• 29:51Amy Poehler?

  Totally.

• 29:52Speaker 02

And then, like, for the next like, two years of open mics, I'm really bad. But I am like, chasing that initial, that initial high of performance.

• 30:04Amy Poehler?

Yes, and when you were, when you were doing stand-up, like, were you feeling like there was a party that was like, I'm gonna be a stand-up? Like, I'm gonna be a stand-up? Or did you feel like stand-up was a tool, or like, a stepping stone to what you wanted to do? Which was, right, act, direct, all the stuff you're doing now?

• 30:19Speaker 02

I think like, a little bit of both. I think in the beginning, I was like, I just want to do whatever I can get my hands on.

• 30:25Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 30:25Speaker 02

And like, you can do an open mic for like, $5, you buy like, a beer or something? And you can do an open mic? So I was like, okay, I can do this. And I did that. I did like, every student film

• 30:41Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 30:41Speaker 02

  exercise that I could do.

• 30:43Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 30:44Speaker 02

There is like, I have like, a whole reel of like, some of the worst dialogue in history. No, no hate, but it wa, it was really like, I'm doing any, I would do them like, back to back to back. And I would like, skip class to do all these films. But then also I met talented filmmakers that way. I met my friend Emma Seligman. And

• 31:04Amy Poehler?

  Who directed

• 31:05Speaker 02

  Shiva Baby and Bottoms.

• 31:06Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 31:07Speaker 02

And so I was doing that and then like I started writing sketches. Io and I did a sketch together that that's sort of like one of my early memories of us like forming a bond because she was so funny and I was like I was laughing the entire sketch, completely unusable takes for me, but I was like cracking up at her. And then like I wrote a sketch that the these sketches about the Babysitters Club that she was in. And then we performed on each other's shows. So it was like, I was slowly like building out the community of like friends. So it was like I met Io, Moss,

• 31:48Speaker 02

my friend Katerina, who's a writer-director, Emma. So it was like, I felt like I got to like build out my community.

• 31:56Amy Poehler?

I mean, that's what it kind of feels like the twenties are about.

• 31:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:59Amy Poehler?

Is like figuring out who is like me.

• 32:02Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 32:02Amy Poehler?

How can we help each other out? Like, how can I form some kind of community to get me through the next X amount of years, like of trying to do the thing that I want to do?

• 32:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 32:12Amy Poehler?

Yeah, yeah. And, and when you were in that period in your twenties, like well, I mean, you just said that you turned thirty.

• 32:21Speaker 02

  I just did.

• 32:22Amy Poehler?

What did you do for your thirtieth birthday? What, how did you celebrate it? Because I gotta tell you, my vision of you is that you're partying every night.

• 32:32Speaker 02

  I

• 32:32Amy Poehler?

  Am I wrong?

• 32:33Speaker 02

Sometimes, but okay, okay, let me, I have so many things to say.

• 32:38Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 32:38Speaker 02

First, I just have to say, I just, do do you know about your Saturn Return?

• 32:44Amy Poehler?

Not only that, but I believe that I'm going to, in just a year or two, be entering my second.

• 32:51Speaker 02

  Oh, my god.

• 32:52Amy Poehler?

Because I've been doing research for this because of your show, because I Love L.A., which we're gonna talk about. And it's all about Saturn's Return, which you just went through.

• 33:00Speaker 02

  I did.

• 33:01Amy Poehler?

And I believe you go through a second one in, I'm fifty-four, but I think you start going through a second one like fifty-six, fifty-seven. I have to

• 33:07Speaker 02

  Are you scared?

• 33:07Amy Poehler?

I could look it up, but

• 33:09Speaker 02

Are you, are you scared or excited?

• 33:11Amy Poehler?

  I'm excited.

• 33:12Speaker 02

  You're excited?

• 33:12Amy Poehler?

  Very excited.

• 33:13Speaker 02

Because it does, I will say, it's nice, back to the rock bottom thing.

• 33:17Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 33:18Speaker 02

When life sort of like shakes you up and you're like, whatever, let's rock.

• 33:24Amy Poehler?

How did it shake you up?

• 33:26Speaker 02

  Okay, I

• 33:28Speaker 02

I feel like it was like, the whole thing is like three years long, but there's really like one month, that's like super chaotic, or for me, there was like a month where that was like really bad. And I felt like everything all happened in one month, but basically like, I feel like in my early twenties, I was partying every night. I was like very messy, chaotic, I was like crying at the bar on the table, like it was really crazy.

• 33:56Amy Poehler?

  Yep.

• 33:57Speaker 02

Then I feel like I moved to LA and I like, I got really like a little weird and like hermody and like kind of, I don't know, I went through this thing where I was just not feeling good in myself, like the strike was happening, I was really depressed. And I think I also like had a lot of insecurities about like

• 34:19Speaker 02

myself as a writer or creator, like I didn't think I could like make something on my own and I was really scared to. And then I think like basically the, the big part of this out of return was like, I went through a breakup and I didn't know about if my show was gonna get picked up yet. But in the meantime, I had to sort of say no to other opportunities, which was really hard for me, especially because I, I think I defined myself off of my work and my value off of my work. And so I was like, I have to say no to stuff and like trust my gut that this is gonna happen and that I can make something on my own.

• 34:59Speaker 02

Um, and when I say on my own, literally I made it with amazing room of writers, amazing co-showrunner, directors, blah, blah, blah.

• 35:07Amy Poehler?

Of course, but you know, women always feel obliged to say that and they don't have to.

• 35:11Speaker 02

But it just, it was, okay, I take it back. I fucking take it back.

• 35:15Amy Poehler?

Because no, you're absolutely right. Nobody does anything alone.

• 35:18Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 35:18Amy Poehler?

Nobody does anything alone, but you're, you're, you're making a really interesting point, which is like, which I see, see this in you and women that you're coming up with, which is this, you know, this Moment where you have to kind of decide to take ownership of the stuff that you want to make.

• 35:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:33Amy Poehler?

And decide that you're ready to do it.

• 35:35Speaker 02

Yes, because no one's, I think like it's also like, you can't do anything until you do it. Like it's like, I directed an episode, you just have to direct one day and be like, okay. Like, obviously you prepare and you write, you draw the little pictures of all the things.

• 35:52Amy Poehler?

  You write the list.

• 35:53Speaker 02

And you go, I think the shirt should be blue.

• 35:55Amy Poehler?

Well, that's the thing about directing and I want to talk to you about this because you've been really, I love how you talk about directing and producing and writing and show running, which is, you know, people act like everything is like a secret room. Like, we learned this from Hamilton.

• 36:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:08Amy Poehler?

Like, that like, there's a room where it happens and only certain people are allowed in it. And there's a language and a vocabulary and only one way to do something and it keeps people out of the room.

• 36:18Speaker 02

Yes, totally. And then you get in the room and it's like three guys being like, I think we should shoot it really slow.

• 36:27Speaker 02

I think we should do it really fast. And you're like, this is all, this is what they're saying? This is what they're saying in here?

• 36:34Amy Poehler?

  Totally.

• 36:35Speaker 02

You're kidding me. And they have snacks? They're ordering like three rounds of coffees? To say, I think we should shoot it slower. I got pissed.

• 36:42Amy Poehler?

Yes, it's incredible. Once you get inside the room.

• 36:46Speaker 02

And then you get a high and then you're like, I'm staying in here and I'm ordering 10 coffees. And I was shooting it fast and then slow.

• 36:55Amy Poehler?

So you're going through your Saturn's return, you come out the other side and you greet 30.

• 37:00Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 37:01Amy Poehler?

Do you party on your 30th birthday?

• 37:03Speaker 02

I do party on my 30. I do, sorry. I do party.

• 37:08Amy Poehler?

  What does that look like?

• 37:09Speaker 02

  I went to Sicily.

• 37:11Amy Poehler?

  Amazing.

• 37:12Speaker 02

  For my friend's wedding.

• 37:13Amy Poehler?

  Okay, great.

• 37:14Speaker 02

And I really partied there and then I stayed there for the week.

• 37:18Amy Poehler?

Perfect. This is what I expected, Rachel. I'm happy to hear this.

• 37:21Speaker 02

And I really, I really went off. It was great. It was fabulous. And it was good, it was good because I feel like I've been working for so long. Like, I went into the hole of making the show.

• 37:31Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 37:32Speaker 02

And now I'm out every day. I'll tell you that. I am. I'm going to a concert tonight if you want to come.

• 37:38Amy Poehler?

  Where are you going?

• 37:39Speaker 02

I'm going, okay, I'm going to see, do you know that girl, Adela?

• 37:42Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 37:43Speaker 02

  She

• 37:44Amy Poehler?

  I wish I did.

• 37:44Speaker 02

  She, you, you're gonna-

• 37:46Amy Poehler?

  Do you, Jenna?

• 37:47Speaker 02

I'm like that song, Sex on the Beat. You gotta get into that.

• 37:50Amy Poehler?

Oh my god, I'm so old. Adela.

• 37:52Speaker 02

  We, you, you'll, you'll love.

• 37:55Amy Poehler?

  It's her concert?

• 37:55Speaker 02

It's her concert, and I'm going, and I'm, I can't wait. And then I'm going to, I just, basically, I, this is the other thing, tell me if you do this. When-

• 38:04Amy Poehler?

  She's a Slovakian singer-songwriter?

• 38:06Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 38:06Amy Poehler?

  Very cool.

• 38:07Speaker 02

  She's very cool.

• 38:08Amy Poehler?

  Cool.

• 38:08Speaker 02

Um, but she, so I'm going to that tonight, but I, I do this thing when I'm like, shooting something, where it's like, you put off every single person in your life.

• 38:16Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 38:16Speaker 02

  Classic.

• 38:17Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 38:17Speaker 02

You, you make promises you can't keep.

• 38:19Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 38:20Speaker 02

Which is like, you're like, yeah, I, when this is over, I am gonna be, I am gonna be out. I am gonna be-

• 38:29Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 38:30Speaker 02

Just going to the club, and then dinner, and then we should go on a hike the next morning, really early. Like, I make so many promises, and then it's like, you, you, you get into a debt, a social debt.

• 38:41Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 38:42Speaker 02

But it's actually kind of fabulous, because then you just commit to a period where you're like, "Let's go."

• 38:47Amy Poehler?

You're in that period right now. So tonight is, is it dinner first? I love talking to people about plans, because-

• 38:53Speaker 02

  I love.

• 38:53Amy Poehler?

I don't wanna do them, but I wanna hear your plans.

• 38:56Speaker 02

  I wanna know.

• 38:56Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I wanna know what you're doing tonight.

• 38:58Speaker 02

Okay, so the plan is, we're doing a group dinner.

• 39:02Amy Poehler?

  Amazing, where?

• 39:03Speaker 02

At my boyfriend's house, we're ordering food.

• 39:05Amy Poehler?

  Fun.

• 39:06Speaker 02

So we have a small group going.

• 39:07Amy Poehler?

  Yep.

• 39:07Speaker 02

  We're pre-gaming.

• 39:08Amy Poehler?

  What time is this?

• 39:09Speaker 02

  This is probably eight o'clock.

• 39:13Amy Poehler?

  Fuck.

• 39:14Speaker 02

  That's okay.

• 39:15Amy Poehler?

  That's just dinner?

• 39:15Speaker 02

I, I know, I like an early dinner too.

• 39:18Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 39:18Speaker 02

But it's more, it's sort of like, you know, if we do dinner too early, then we're gonna get sleepy before the show.

• 39:25Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 39:25Speaker 02

So, I, we gotta sort of, what I'm thinking instead is like- When, when it should be dinner, that's when I'll be taking a nap.

• 39:32Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 39:33Speaker 02

And then, but of course, I'll be sleeping with my glam on, because I wanna keep it for the show. So, obviously, being like this.

• 39:38Amy Poehler?

  Like a soap opera star.

• 39:39Speaker 02

Like a soap opera star, glam on, like this. Getting lipstick on the pillow, and then I'll jerk awake.

• 39:45Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 39:45Speaker 02

  Seven forty-five.

• 39:47Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 39:48Speaker 02

  Listerine, you know, swishing around.

• 39:51Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 39:51Speaker 02

Bam. Dinner, people start arriving, dinner.

• 39:55Amy Poehler?

  Order in.

• 39:56Speaker 02

  Order in.

• 39:57Amy Poehler?

  No cooking.

• 39:58Speaker 02

That, no cooking, we're, no cooking. For that many people, six, that's crazy. Cooking for six people?

• 40:06Amy Poehler?

That's outrageous. What are you, some kind of machine?

• 40:08Speaker 02

  No!

• 40:09Amy Poehler?

Cooking for six people? No way!

• 40:11Speaker 02

I only know how to make sweet potatoes and ground turkey. And then we're gonna be burping garlic all over the art hose at the concert. We can't, I can't do that.

• 40:19Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 40:19Speaker 02

  So...

• 40:20Amy Poehler?

  Then you eat.

• 40:21Speaker 02

Then we eat, and it's like, you know, drinking a little. Maybe I'm trying on outfits. Maybe I'm leaving dinner, coming back, presenting an outfit to the group.

• 40:28Amy Poehler?

  Oh, that's fun!

• 40:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:32Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 40:33Speaker 02

  Do you do that?

• 40:34Amy Poehler?

No. I don't, but I, I in general have a weird relationship to outfits.

• 40:40Speaker 02

  Really?

• 40:40Amy Poehler?

That I, like, I, and I lo, and I'm very, very intrigued by your relationship to outfits. Cause for me, outfits, like, I don't have the feeling, like, I'll, I'll use my friend, my good friend Maya Rudolph as an example. When Maya Rudolph gets dressed and she gets to change, she would love to do that, what you're doing. Like, come in and out of the room with different outfits.

• 41:00Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 41:01Amy Poehler?

  Look at my outfit.

• 41:01Speaker 02

  What do we think?

• 41:02Amy Poehler?

Look at my outfit. That, to me, feels so stressful.

• 41:06Speaker 02

Do you know what you should do?

• 41:07Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 41:08Speaker 02

Do you like to smoke weed?

• 41:09Amy Poehler?

I don't really smoke it anymore, but I will.

• 41:11Speaker 02

Okay. For this, or it could be a glass of wine, or it could be a little CBD joint, or whatever.

• 41:16Amy Poehler?

Sure, I'd rather weed over wine.

• 41:18Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 41:18Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 41:19Speaker 02

  Let's do a, let's do a weed.

• 41:20Amy Poehler?

  Let's do like a gummy.

• 41:20Speaker 02

  Let's do a gummy.

• 41:22Amy Poehler?

  Okay, alright.

• 41:23Speaker 02

  You know, fuck a gummy.

• 41:24Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 41:25Speaker 02

Now, you, I kinda think it's good to do this, like, on your own.

• 41:28Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 41:29Speaker 02

Cause then you, and, and like, maybe...

• 41:31Amy Poehler?

  By myself?

• 41:31Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 41:32Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 41:33Speaker 02

Start by yourself, because then you're not, you know you're not doing it for anyone. Or, you better believe all curve.

• 41:40Speaker 02

I'm in my social chapter, I'm free, so...

• 41:42Amy Poehler?

I'm already worried that you're overbooking yourself, don't promise that.

• 41:45Speaker 02

  Okay. But I'm just saying.

• 41:46Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 41:47Speaker 02

It, I would say do it in, like, the daytime. Gummy, iced coffee, so that you're kinda, your body's fighting itself.

• 42:01Amy Poehler?

Okay, I'm in my apartment, it's blazing sun, gummy and iced coffee, 2 o'clock in the afternoon. I just cancel all my plans. And what do I do next? I go to my closet.

• 42:15Amy Poehler?

Play an elevator, getting really high from the coffee and then getting really down from the gummy.

• 42:22Amy Poehler?

  Then what do I do?

• 42:22Speaker 02

  You put on music.

• 42:24Amy Poehler?

Okay, music. What do I play? What do I play?

• 42:27Speaker 02

I think it's like something really like ethereal fun.

• 42:32Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 42:32Speaker 02

Like, like, you know, you make me feel like dancing, okay?

• 42:39Speaker 02

I'm just kind of telling you about a Saturday that I had like a week ago.

• 42:43Amy Poehler?

  Okay, perfect.

• 42:45Speaker 02

And then you just start trying shit on.

• 42:48Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 42:48Speaker 02

And you throw stuff on the floor and you take pictures with stuff. And it's like, and maybe like halfway through you stop, you order some food. And it's like, and by the way, you're not picking up any of the clothes till the next day when you're not high in the gummy anymore.

• 43:01Amy Poehler?

That's gonna be really hard for me.

• 43:02Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 43:03Amy Poehler?

But that's okay, but that's okay.

• 43:04Speaker 02

  It's part of it.

• 43:05Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 43:06Speaker 02

Is it's just like, there's no like, there's no I'm cleaning, there's no I'm organizing. You're playing. You're trying stuff on. You're, and you, and you should also have a mirror with really good light. This is why I'm saying the daytime, because in my house, I have a mirror that only looks good at a certain time. So you can take this and, you know, joget for like your, your vibe.

• 43:27Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 43:27Speaker 02

You know, like, but this is, this is just for me.

• 43:30Amy Poehler?

This is actually really helpful because it is about, like, what you're talking about is about play.

• 43:38Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 43:39Amy Poehler?

Like not, just not making everything so serious.

• 43:41Speaker 02

Not making everything so serious. And it's like, you can, you can take pictures of stuff or lots of times I'll do videos of me like walking and then walk into the camera back and then I text them all to my sisters and I go like, heart, which ones you like?

• 43:54Amy Poehler?

Okay, this feels like a very sister thing.

• 43:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:57Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 43:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:57Amy Poehler?

Like what sisters do for each other.

• 43:59Speaker 02

Yes, and then you can get feedback and then they can be like, drop the vest, keep the scarf.

• 44:05Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 44:06Speaker 02

  You know?

• 44:07Amy Poehler?

And do you take that feedback? Do you go?

• 44:09Speaker 02

  Depends.

• 44:09Amy Poehler?

  Depends.

• 44:10Speaker 02

Depends. Because it's like, sometimes I'm like, you don't know, this is a really good outfit. And then, and sometimes you, by the way, sometimes you'll try on an outfit that you created that day. That, this is, that's inventing outfits.

• 44:22Amy Poehler?

This feels like level two. I feel like I'm at level two right now. I just need to start by taking the gummy during the day.

• 44:29Speaker 02

Just start by taking the gummy. Just start by getting high in the morning. And then work your way up.

• 44:34Amy Poehler?

  Work your way up.

• 44:35Speaker 02

  To all of this.

• 48:01Amy Poehler?

  Okay, you and your sisters.

• 48:03Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 48:05Amy Poehler?

Make me think about the women that you have like, kind of like your chosen sisters, like you said, Io.

• 48:10Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 48:10Amy Poehler?

And another chosen sister is Molly.

• 48:14Speaker 02

  Yes, love Molly.

• 48:15Amy Poehler?

Molly Gordon, who we spoke to.

• 48:18Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 48:19Amy Poehler?

  For this interview.

• 48:20Speaker 02

Love, I love her. I just talked to her last night.

• 48:23Amy Poehler?

She said, "You guys talk every day."

• 48:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:25Amy Poehler?

  Called you her wife.

• 48:27Speaker 02

Wife, sister, we're like, we're, it's, which is weird, but we, like, five different things.

• 48:33Amy Poehler?

So for people who like are getting, because I think like, there's a lot of people who are getting to know your work, Molly's work, I O's work, like, you are this rising class, I think, of really, really talented artists and filmmakers and showrunners and writers and, and actors. But Shiva Baby was a, a film that you and Molly did together that was this teeny tiny film that really like exploded and took off. Can you talk a little bit about the path of that?

• 49:02Speaker 02

Yes. So that was a crazy experience and it's crazier now, looking back at it. Um, because, so it was first a short film that Emma Seligman wrote and directed that I was in. And it got into South by, and after it got into South by, Emma was like, I, I still remember, it was like, Emma and I like, met up at a dig in, um, for a dig in.

• 49:27Amy Poehler?

  What's a dig in?

• 49:29Speaker 02

  Oh my god!

• 49:31Amy Poehler?

  At a dig in?

• 49:32Speaker 02

  A dig in. It's a fast casual lunch place. It's like a-

• 49:36Amy Poehler?

Oh, a dig in is a restaurant?

• 49:38Speaker 02

  It's sort, it's like a Sweetgreen. It's like a sister of a Sweetgreen.

• 49:42Amy Poehler?

Uh, Sweetgreen was brought up earlier because Molly was like, that's a nice place to go to the bathroom. They're usually nice at a Sweetgreen.

• 49:48Speaker 02

  They, they'll let you.

• 49:49Amy Poehler?

So dig in, is that an LA thing?

• 49:51Speaker 02

No, it's a New York thing.

• 49:52Amy Poehler?

Oh god, I don't know it. Okay, good to know.

• 49:53Speaker 02

I think they have them here too, but there was really a chapter where it was big.

• 49:57Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 49:58Speaker 02

In New York, when we were in college.

• 50:00Amy Poehler?

  Got it.

• 50:01Speaker 02

So, we needed a dig in, we're catching up, and Emma is like, I'm gonna make Shiva Baby into a feature. And we were also, that's also the same day that we came up with the loose idea for Bottoms, and we started writing it.

• 50:14Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 50:14Speaker 02

So we're writing Bottoms while Emma's also writing Shiva Baby. And like, basically, it was like- This like slow process of building the movie out and it's like, no one wants to make a first time filmmaker's movie. It's like so impossible to get people behind you. Um, and it was sort of like this, this game of like, we're trying to cast the movie. We don't have the money for the movie. Um, I wanted to shout out Rhiannon Jones, who was one of the producers, who was like the first person to like, be like, I'm giving you guys money to make this movie. And, and gave like a big chunk of money. It was like a super indie movie. I think the budget was around like 200K, but it's like, that's really hard.

• 50:57Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 50:57Speaker 02

To raise that money when you are college students.

• 51:01Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 51:02Speaker 02

And all you have is a short film.

• 51:03Amy Poehler?

  Of course.

• 51:04Speaker 02

So it's like, I remember like talking with Emma and we're like, trying to cast the movie without the money, get the locations, but get the funding at the same time. So it was all of that. And when Molly signed on to do it, it felt like, oh my God, like she's legit. Cause we had seen, both seen her in Booksmart and been like, she is so funny.

• 51:27Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 51:28Speaker 02

So funny and like, she's a real actress.

• 51:32Amy Poehler?

I mean, that's exactly what she was talking about. Like she said, when you guys met, you were like, you're a real actress. And she.

• 51:38Speaker 02

  Help us.

• 51:39Amy Poehler?

Yeah, but, but I relate because when you come through the door of like comedy.

• 51:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:45Amy Poehler?

You often feel like that's, that's just kind of like, you just, you've always, that's the door you've always come through.

• 51:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:52Amy Poehler?

And it takes a minute to figure out that, you know, everyone is talented at a lot of things.

• 51:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:00Amy Poehler?

Um, so were you feeling then insecure about your acting or anything?

• 52:06Speaker 02

  Definitely.

• 52:06Amy Poehler?

  You were.

• 52:07Speaker 02

I was because I had never been, I was all of a sudden the lead of a film that wasn't fully funded yet and didn't have a location. Like it was so like, it was like, I think we got the rest of our funding like a day before we shot the movie. And basically we go to film the first scene and it's me and Molly. And I clam up and I just whisper.

• 52:31Amy Poehler?

  Oh, you whisper.

• 52:33Speaker 02

  I whisper.

• 52:35Amy Poehler?

Right. Because you know, sometimes when we're really nervous, we get like very sleepy and tired and quiet.

• 52:41Speaker 02

Really, really. And I'm like, no one can tell if I'm doing a bad job if they can't hear me or see me. So it's like the first thing we film is that scene where we like run into each other. We talk for the first time at the Shiva. And I'm like, this guy is, yeah.

• 53:00Speaker 02

And it's like, Emma's like, cut. And so then Emma like pulls me aside because they're an amazing friend and director. And they're like, so we can't hear anything. We can't hear a word that you're saying. And I'm like, totally. Did this in private, thank God, and was, and did it really nicely, but was like, I think just like maybe have a little more, um, voice. And I was like, totally. We go again and I'm like, hmm, so it is you. And I, it was, I was, I was like sweating.

• 53:32Amy Poehler?

This is so interesting because we started talking about like little Rachel on stage being loud. And then you have this moment, you're like, okay, now I'm a real actor. And now I'm gonna get very quiet.

• 53:44Speaker 02

  So gone.

• 53:45Amy Poehler?

I'm gonna do, I'm actually gonna do the, it's like, I'm not gonna pitch my fastball. I'm gonna do the opposite of what I do well.

• 53:50Speaker 02

I'm gonna drop it. I'm gonna drop the ball on the floor.

• 53:53Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 53:54Speaker 02

  I, I, I'm gonna roll it.

• 53:55Amy Poehler?

The mound, let's, we'll keep the baseball. Your dad and the Red Sox would want to know that you can extend that baseball metaphor. So it would be.

• 54:02Speaker 02

On the mound, on the mound, on the mound. We're sports.

• 54:06Amy Poehler?

Yeah, so, um, so you're, but that's so interesting. So then, and then what happens?

• 54:09Speaker 02

And then I think Molly basically was like, Molly can do, she like charmed the pants off of me, basically. And was like, she just started improv-ing and talking to me and talking before we were rolling. And I didn't feel like I was in a scene anymore. I felt like I was like talking to her and flirting with her, but feeling like, and it just, it clicked for me. And like between Molly and Emma, Emma coming, and then it was like we got into. And then Emma came over and was like whispering stuff in my ear of like, really like, make a work for it on this one or like, like give in on this one, giggle on this one.

• 54:51Amy Poehler?

Let's move the camera slower on this one.

• 54:53Speaker 02

Let's camera slower on this one.

• 54:55Amy Poehler?

  And faster on this.

• 54:56Speaker 02

Fast, really fast. And then Molly was like improvising and like, I just felt like, basically, they just, I just felt like so like brought into the space and then I felt like, I know how to do this. But it was like, I think, I just, I just watched both of them like, shine and like, bring me into their like, like artistry is like a big word, but I kind of felt like they both were like, come here, you, you can do this. And like, I, it just, anyways, it really like, opened everything up for me and it was really special.

• 55:38Amy Poehler?

  Very cool.

• 55:39Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 55:39Amy Poehler?

Now Molly had a question for you.

• 55:41Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 55:42Amy Poehler?

And, um, the first one was, uh, please have, um, Rachel tell the fingering story, which you already told naturally.

• 55:52Speaker 02

I did it on my own. Wow. Huge.

• 55:54Amy Poehler?

Incredible. Um, so thank you for that. And then this, and, and she said, basically said, you know, when she met you, that what she was so drawn to, and what I feel drawn to you right now, I'm feeling the same thing, which is you're like the great audacity of here's what I want to do. I want to do this. I want to do this. Like, like, ambition, not being afraid of it, like feeling like you want to take up a lot of space. And she said, that confidence, like, has that all, has, have you always had that? The question is like, where did you, where do you think that came from?

• 56:29Speaker 02

It's interesting because I, I look back at myself at that time and I think I was like, I was very insecure and anxious, but at the same time, I did always have this feeling of like, I have to do this. And I think, I think that's from my family for sure. Like, I think it's like, I, there was like this thing of like, okay, if you're gonna do it, then do it. And I think like in my mind, I was like, I can't even entertain the possibility of not doing this because I don't. Have any other plan. I don't.

• 57:04Amy Poehler?

There's never a job you would want to do instead of this? Did you ever think about like another major or another job? Other than insurance, salesman or accountant?

• 57:13Speaker 02

Yeah, I think now that I'm here, I'm like, I would love to do marketing. I love marketing.

• 57:18Amy Poehler?

  Wait, what do you mean?

• 57:19Speaker 02

I just love marketing. I just started getting on marketing calls and I'm like, these girls are fabulous. They're just so, I'm just like, I love, I love marketing.

• 57:29Amy Poehler?

You like, you like figuring out how to get the message out?

• 57:32Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 57:32Amy Poehler?

You're very good at marketing. You're very good at TikTok. You're very good at Twitter.

• 57:36Speaker 02

And you better believe I have, I have sounds saved for us.

• 57:40Amy Poehler?

  For our TikTok?

• 57:41Speaker 02

  Yeah. If you're down.

• 57:44Amy Poehler?

Um, I have a question, a TikTok question for you. How do you get your TikToks to move so fast?

• 57:51Speaker 02

You make it slow. I'll show you. Wait, do you, have you ever do slow mo so then it speeds it up?

• 57:57Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 57:57Speaker 02

  We'll do that today.

• 57:58Amy Poehler?

You shoot it in slow mo?

• 58:00Speaker 02

You shoot it, yes. So it shoot, it shoots in, so the sound.

• 58:05Amy Poehler?

Are we talking about a cap cut situation?

• 58:07Speaker 02

  No.

• 58:08Amy Poehler?

  Fantastic.

• 58:08Speaker 02

I won't, I won't do that to you. I, I will not do that to you.

• 58:11Amy Poehler?

  Someone's laughing.

• 58:12Speaker 02

I, Claire, Claire is laughing because I had her help me with doing a, what I've always wanted to do, which is green screen. Basically, I'm talking in front of a picture.

• 58:25Amy Poehler?

That's what I want to do and I don't know how to do it.

• 58:27Speaker 02

I just learned and I can show you. I can show you today. I can show you. I just found out how. Claire taught me and now I can teach you.

• 58:33Amy Poehler?

Okay, we might, we might have to do that for our TikTok. Is talk about ourselves in front of a picture.

• 58:38Speaker 02

In front of a picture. We could even take a photo of us, pose, and then we can analyze like our outfits. We could do anything. We can do whatever we want. It's so fun.

• 58:48Amy Poehler?

It's so fun. Why is it fun? Cause I think it's fun too. Why do you think it's fun?

• 58:51Speaker 02

I feel like I'm playing with clay and dough. Like I feel like I'm like Play-Doh. I feel like I'm doing crafts. And then afterwards you get to watch it over and over and go, I made that. I did that just now. It's so fun.

• 59:05Amy Poehler?

  It is so fun.

• 59:06Speaker 02

And the noises and the colors, it's just the best.

• 59:09Amy Poehler?

But it makes sense to me because you definitely have this sense of knowing how to exist in that space. And it kind of comes back to you just like being authentically yourself, which is just hard to teach. You know?

• 59:22Speaker 02

You just got a rocket, I guess.

• 59:23Amy Poehler?

  You do.

• 59:24Speaker 02

But sometimes things happen, I don't know if you've had this, where it's like, You you're like, okay, I'm being authentically myself. I'm being authentically myself. And then you either, these are two things that have happened to me. You're either being authentically yourself and everyone's like, we hate it.

• 59:42Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 59:42Speaker 02

And you're like, I should be someone else. I should be someone else. Or you're kind of being a version of yourself and everyone's like, we love it, slut. And then you change a little. I'm never gonna stop being a slut, but sorry, something else.

• 59:56Amy Poehler?

  Sure.

• 59:57Speaker 02

You know, you're like, I'm messy, I'm this, whatever. And then you go into a different zone and then you're like, but they still like that. I should keep doing that.

• 1:00:04Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 1:00:04Speaker 02

  But in reality, you're changing.

• 1:00:05Amy Poehler?

You are the generation that has grown up. Like, when did you get your first phone?

• 1:00:09Speaker 02

When I was in middle school.

• 1:00:10Amy Poehler?

Yeah. And you've had a lifetime of being online.

• 1:00:13Speaker 02

We talked about this a lot when we were creating the show. I think there's like a lot of times people like look at, like, I'm gonna say that my generation, I'm I'm like zillennial cusp, so I'm not claiming.

• 1:00:26Amy Poehler?

You are. What do you claim? I'm Z or millennial.

• 1:00:29Speaker 02

I claim zillennial, because I feel real, like, I feel a bit of both. Do you know what I mean? When we start getting into skippity toilet, I get lost.

• 1:00:38Amy Poehler?

  Sure.

• 1:00:39Speaker 02

You know what I mean? I'm like, what's going on? I didn't do kindergarten on Zoom, so I, you know what I mean? Like, I had, I I didn't have, what is this called? Um, when your brain fully develops?

• 1:00:50Amy Poehler?

  Oh, um, your frontal lobe.

• 1:00:52Speaker 02

My frontal lobe. I think my frontal lobe developed like, what time does that happen? Halfway through COVID.

• 1:00:59Amy Poehler?

Say COVID. Weird time to have your frontal lobe closed during COVID.

• 1:01:03Speaker 02

During COVID. But I felt it.

• 1:01:07Amy Poehler?

  Snatched. You were like, snatch.

• 1:01:08Speaker 02

Snatched. Ah, yes, yeah. And and and so I I didn't have to go through like formative development developmental years during COVID or whatever. Like, I think there's something to do with that that I don't have.

• 1:01:22Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 1:01:23Speaker 02

Um, but the the we were just talking about six, seven. I found out I'm in group seven from TikTok.

• 1:01:31Amy Poehler?

I found out I was in group seven.

• 1:01:33Speaker 02

  Group seven.

• 1:01:34Amy Poehler?

  What does that mean?

• 1:01:35Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 1:01:35Amy Poehler?

  Okay, good.

• 1:01:36Speaker 02

And so if I was fully Gen Z, I would. Claire explained it to me because she is, because she's 25.

• 1:01:40Amy Poehler?

Okay, Claire will explain. And she'll show us how to do the green screen.

• 1:01:42Speaker 02

How to do the green screen.

• 1:01:45Amy Poehler?

Okay, let's talk about I love LA.

• 1:01:46Speaker 02

  I'm talking so much.

• 1:01:47Amy Poehler?

No, it's so good. Same. And and and you have a great cast and you shoot it in LA and Do you love LA?

• 1:01:57Speaker 02

  I do love LA.

• 1:01:58Amy Poehler?

Okay. What, can you help me? Because I'm actually genuinely, I'm coming up on like year fifteen or sixteen of being here. And I go back and forth between LA and New York. And I'm not loving LA right now. LA is crushing me a little bit.

• 1:02:11Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:02:11Amy Poehler?

I think I want to go back to the East Coast.

• 1:02:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:02:13Amy Poehler?

Like I really, you know, my kids are almost out of school. I'm like feeling this giant pull and I'm trying to stay with LA. Because LA has been very good to me.

• 1:02:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:02:21Amy Poehler?

And it's, there's a lot about, I love California. There's a lot about Los Angeles. I have a lot of friends here. I've had great memories here. I've made a lot of stuff I'm really proud of here. But I'm just like, what do you love about LA? And can you help me love it too?

• 1:02:34Speaker 02

Yes. I like LA most in the winter.

• 1:02:38Amy Poehler?

  I do too.

• 1:02:38Speaker 02

  It's the best.

• 1:02:39Amy Poehler?

It's my favorite. January to April is

• 1:02:42Speaker 02

  Heaven.

• 1:02:42Amy Poehler?

  Because everywhere else is freezing.

• 1:02:44Speaker 02

Everyone else, everywhere else is freezing. Meanwhile, we're going to the beach in an UG. And a hoodie. Beach in an UG and a hoodie.

• 1:02:51Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:52Speaker 02

And you're getting, get this. You maybe, okay, morning.

• 1:02:56Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:02:56Speaker 02

  It's a Saturday.

• 1:02:57Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 1:02:58Speaker 02

Again, weed gum and coffee. Sorry. You don't have to, you could do something else.

• 1:03:02Amy Poehler?

  Who's driving?

• 1:03:03Speaker 02

  Who's driving? Somebody's boyfriend.

• 1:03:05Amy Poehler?

  Somebody's boyfriend is driving.

• 1:03:06Speaker 02

  Somebody's boyfriend is driving.

• 1:03:07Amy Poehler?

Okay, great, okay, I like this.

• 1:03:08Speaker 02

Not us, we're getting in an Uber.

• 1:03:09Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 1:03:09Speaker 02

But ideally, it's like someone's boyfriend is driving. Like the boyfriend of the friend group. He's, he's, he's driving.

• 1:03:14Amy Poehler?

  Great, I like this, yeah.

• 1:03:15Speaker 02

And you've got a playlist. You guys stop, you got bagels.

• 1:03:20Amy Poehler?

Okay, not good bagels though in LA.

• 1:03:23Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:03:23Amy Poehler?

  Yeah?

• 1:03:23Speaker 02

  You go to Courage.

• 1:03:24Amy Poehler?

  Okay, great.

• 1:03:25Speaker 02

You go to Courage, or there's a place in Burbank called Hank's. Underrated, I'm actually giving away my spot, but

• 1:03:30Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 1:03:31Speaker 02

I know you bitches aren't going to Burbank, so it's fine. Um, it's okay. I work there, so I'm going.

• 1:03:38Amy Poehler?

  You worked at Hank's?

• 1:03:39Speaker 02

I work, no, I work at the lot.

• 1:03:40Amy Poehler?

Oh, you work at the lot?

• 1:03:41Speaker 02

  It's right nearby.

• 1:03:42Amy Poehler?

I was like, oh my God, you also work at Hank's?

• 1:03:43Speaker 02

Okay, I work, I have two jobs.

• 1:03:45Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 1:03:45Speaker 02

  I have three.

• 1:03:46Amy Poehler?

  So you get your bagel.

• 1:03:47Speaker 02

So you get your bagel, and now you're eating your bagels in the car. Or you save them, you get to the beach, you run on the sand, you're just sitting on the sand in like jeans and an UG and a sweater.

• 1:03:57Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I love, I love the beach in a sweater.

• 1:04:00Speaker 02

The beach in a sweater, it's completely empty.

• 1:04:03Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 1:04:03Speaker 02

Because no one else has this good of an idea, except for us. And and you're just like vibe, you're having a beach day, but you're having a winter beach day. And you can make it into a thing like you could then then you could go like up to Topanga Canyon and you could buy a set of tarot cards for your friend and go on a hike over there. There's like some really nice hikes in Malibu. There's like eh eh you could go to the pier. You could get like um seafood at Broad Street Oyster Company. But like you make a day in the winter that you couldn't do somewhere else.

• 1:04:35Amy Poehler?

I completely agree. You know what I mean? I think Los Angeles, California in the winter is where it really shines.

• 1:04:40Speaker 02

  Is really where it shines.

• 1:04:42Amy Poehler?

The rest of the year is tough for me.

• 1:04:44Speaker 02

So what if, what if you stuck around? We do like beach day in the day, weed gummy closet.

• 1:04:52Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:53Speaker 02

And it's like, by the way, we're in bed at seven o'clock.

• 1:04:56Amy Poehler?

  I don't believe you.

• 1:04:58Speaker 02

We will be. If we're starting the day with a weed gummy, we're in bed.

• 1:05:01Amy Poehler?

You already told me about your plans tonight.

• 1:05:03Speaker 02

I know, but that's because I'm in a social chapter. But in January and February, in January and February. We're hibernating, but we're hibernating with our friends.

• 1:05:13Amy Poehler?

  OK, OK.

• 1:05:14Speaker 02

And our community, we're we're hibernating with like six people.

• 1:05:17Amy Poehler?

  I I.

• 1:05:18Speaker 02

Or three, if that feels better.

• 1:05:19Amy Poehler?

That actually really did make me like Los Angeles more, what you just said.

• 1:05:24Speaker 02

This is the thing, New York, bam, you're confronted with a new chapter or an event or whatever. And it's it's thrown in your face and it's fabulous and it's going like, wake up. You just met this person on the street. LA, you have to do it a little for yourself, but you get to sit down in your room one day. Delusional, me, this, alone. Hi, in my in my closet. New era, let's go.

• 1:05:48Amy Poehler?

  OK, um, lightning round.

• 1:05:51Speaker 02

  Lightning round, I'm walking in.

• 1:05:55Amy Poehler?

  Have you done ayahuasca?

• 1:05:56Speaker 02

  No, should I?

• 1:05:57Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 1:05:58Speaker 02

  OK.

• 1:05:59Amy Poehler?

Um, okay, are cigarettes making a comeback?

• 1:06:04Speaker 02

They are, they are, but we have to stop, but they are.

• 1:06:09Amy Poehler?

  They are.

• 1:06:10Speaker 02

And they're good, but also who can blame us? Look at what is happening.

• 1:06:14Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 1:06:15Speaker 02

I know, and they were, they were feeding, they were feeding people the vapes at 12.

• 1:06:20Amy Poehler?

I know, the vapes hopefully are taking a break, but cigarettes are back.

• 1:06:25Speaker 02

Well, the cigarettes are people trying to wean off the vape.

• 1:06:28Amy Poehler?

Oh, that's so brutal. That's like heroin to not take your oxy.

• 1:06:33Speaker 02

Heroin to pill, to heroin pills.

• 1:06:36Amy Poehler?

It's hard out there. Okay, album you're listening to right now?

• 1:06:39Speaker 02

I've been listening a lot to the Addison album. It's an album that makes me feel very like free. It makes me feel like my mom's friend who always wore yoga pants, who was like really chic.

• 1:06:50Amy Poehler?

Mm-hmm, and sexy and like kind of a little sleepy and in a dream.

• 1:06:54Speaker 02

And so free. I was like, yeah.

• 1:06:56Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:56Speaker 02

Addison feels very like free to me.

• 1:06:58Amy Poehler?

Um, is there a person's career path that you look at and admire?

• 1:07:03Speaker 02

Definitely, I'm not being a suck up.

• 1:07:08Amy Poehler?

  You can't see me.

• 1:07:10Speaker 02

I'm not allowed? You're sitting right in front of me. What if I was like, I need an idea. Bam.

• 1:07:16Amy Poehler?

What if before this podcast, someone pulled you aside and said like, when Amy asks that, you have, you have to say her. She gets really upset.

• 1:07:23Speaker 02

She gets really upset. Yeah, that would be crazy if they said that. No, I, I just, I do wanna say like, okay, so I'm sorry, I'll just say it and then we can cut it genuinely and then I'll say someone else.

• 1:07:36Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 1:07:36Speaker 02

Okay, but I, I do really want to say like genuinely, like you have made a difference in my life. Going to pursue comedy and going to, to like be funny and be loud and be bold, like, and also be kind. Like I feel like when I read your book, I was like, there was.

• 1:07:59Speaker 02

  The ability to be like,

• 1:08:02Speaker 02

both like bold and loud, but also like vulnerable and sensitive. I think is that like, sometimes it feels like you're not allowed to have both. And I, I, I feel like you need both and you should be able to. And that's something that I get from you or like I'm inspired by from you. And like, I think like the women you, your community, like Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey, all of them.

• 1:08:29Amy Poehler?

Thank you, Rachel. That's really nice.

• 1:08:32Speaker 02

So, that's true. But now, do you want me to say someone else? Okay.

• 1:08:43Speaker 02

I, Brittany Murphy is an actress that I really look up to.

• 1:08:47Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 1:08:47Speaker 02

I think she's an incredible actress. Or wasn't an incredible actress.

• 1:08:51Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:52Speaker 02

She's just someone who like, I saw her in like, immediately, like when I saw her in Clueless. I was like, she just has something special and she's very, she was very true to herself.

• 1:09:04Amy Poehler?

She was, you know, I, she hosted SNL my first season there. And she, I remember her being like really kind, really super hardworking, very open to ideas. And you're right, she had like a sparkly, interesting quality about her and she could do a lot of things really well.

• 1:09:22Speaker 02

Yes, like I feel like had so much range.

• 1:09:25Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 1:09:25Speaker 02

And like, I don't know, I felt like, there are certain people where it's like, it's like the character wouldn't be the character if it wasn't you playing it. And I feel like she has that.

• 1:09:37Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 1:09:37Speaker 02

  Which is really special.

• 1:09:39Amy Poehler?

When was the last time you cried?

• 1:09:41Speaker 02

Um, yesterday, because I, this is the other thing. So I didn't cry for a speed round, but I'll say it really fast.

• 1:09:49Amy Poehler?

That's okay. You, I like speed rounds to go slow.

• 1:09:51Speaker 02

  To go slow.

• 1:09:54Speaker 02

I didn't cry for like a long time because I was so like stressed about the job and I was trying to take it seriously and be locked in and I was like, there's no time to cry. There's no time to cry. And then I think now that I'm in my social era and I have like a little space to breathe, like the lid is coming off. So I'm just crying more freely. Yesterday, I sort of had a little bit of a manic episode. This goes back to the closet thing where I remembered a shirt from three years ago that I haven't. I just was like, wait a second.

• 1:10:24Amy Poehler?

  Where is it?

• 1:10:24Speaker 02

Where is that? And then I started like rummaging through my closet, not in a fun way, no weed gummy, just like panicked.

• 1:10:32Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:32Speaker 02

Panicked, texting people pictures of the shirt, being like, have you seen this? Texting my mom, being like, is this at home? She's like, what? Like that?

• 1:10:42Amy Poehler?

What do you think the shirt meant? What was it? When you thought of the shirt, where did you, where had you worn it? What did it mean to you? What did it represent?

• 1:10:50Speaker 02

I think it was that I've been living in my place for too long and I used to live there with my ex-boyfriend and I moved around to Airbnbs before I lived in that place. And all of a sudden, I was just like, where's all my stuff and who am I? And then I started to cry.

• 1:11:05Amy Poehler?

Yes. I think that material, I think that objects can do that.

• 1:11:09Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:11:10Amy Poehler?

And then the last question is, what are you listening to, watching? What do you do when you want to laugh? What do you, what kind of stuff do you do when you like need a break? Like when you want to get out of your head and just feel good?

• 1:11:24Speaker 02

And feel good. I have a couple of friends and my sisters where it's like, we send each other like TikToks that are like really weird. And then like I catch up on all the TikToks that like my friends or my sisters that be, and I like feel like I'm watching like their show, kind of the feed that they've curated for me. And then I reply to all of them like, haha, this is us when we're in the car with mom. This was us when we would go on a walk, drink, whatever. And that feels, that's fun and silly for me.

• 1:11:54Amy Poehler?

It's funny. It's like, we do this at our, at our office at Paperkite. We like show each other our feeds to see what, where everyone's heads are at.

• 1:12:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:12:02Amy Poehler?

And you know, sometimes my kids I'll be like, Mom, your feed is really sad. You know, like, and like, you're right, it's too sad.

• 1:12:07Speaker 02

It's too sad. But by the way, sometimes that's good, because then you can go, I'm in a sad period right now.

• 1:12:13Amy Poehler?

Totally. I'm not in my social chapter.

• 1:12:15Speaker 02

I'm not in my social chapter.

• 1:12:16Amy Poehler?

So like, what is it, what is, I'm just, as we finish, can you remember any TikTok that you enjoy that is funny?

• 1:12:22Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:12:23Amy Poehler?

Oh, my God, amazing. You want to show it to me?

• 1:12:24Speaker 02

I would love to. Let me, let me go through.

• 1:12:26Amy Poehler?

I don't even know how to get TikTok on my laptop.

• 1:12:29Speaker 02

I was gonna show you on my phone.

• 1:12:31Amy Poehler?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, here we go. What are we watching?

• 1:12:33Speaker 02

I'm just going through, I mean, let's look.

• 1:12:35Amy Poehler?

Okay, so, how would you, how would you describe? Okay, this is incredible. Yes, this is incredible. This is a video of, um, it says, congratulations, it's a girl. And then it says, the girl. And the girl's walking around wearing a giant pig head, holding a baseball bat.

• 1:12:57Speaker 02

  To a creepy little song.

• 1:12:58Amy Poehler?

To a creepy song, and she looks awesome.

• 1:13:00Speaker 02

She, this diva is, I'm like, she knows who she is already.

• 1:13:05Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 1:13:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:13:06Amy Poehler?

That's very good. That's very, very funny. Okay. And then we've got.

• 1:13:12Speaker 02

  Priest DJ.

• 1:13:13Amy Poehler?

  A priest DJ.

• 1:13:17Speaker 02

You just feel like he has a hobby and a passion, like, do you know what I mean? Like, I'm like, he's having fun.

• 1:13:24Amy Poehler?

He is having fun, yeah. All right, Rach, I'm gonna have you sit back in your chair so I can properly say thank you for coming and doing this.

• 1:13:32Speaker 02

Thank you so much for having me. This was a damn delight.

• 1:13:37Amy Poehler?

Thank you so much, Rachel Sennott. That was so fun. You are a delight and so funny and charming. And I could have talked to you all day.
