  My kids.

• 0:44Conan O'Brien?

  Okay.

• 0:45Speaker 01

  Or Okie.

• 0:45Conan O'Brien?

You gotta get them their stuff.

• 0:46Speaker 01

  Or my dog.

• 0:46Conan O'Brien?

And then your husband is last. Well, guess what? It's that time of year. You feel that, you smell that cinnamon cider in the air? Do you smell that?

• 0:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 0:56Conan O'Brien?

• 1:33Speaker 02

Hi, my name is Rachel Sennett.

• 1:39Speaker 02

And I feel included about being Conan O'Brien's friend.

• 2:05Conan O'Brien?

Hey there. Welcome to Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend. I am joined, as always, and I'm very fortunate to be joined by Sona Masesian.

• 2:13Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 2:13Conan O'Brien?

  And Matt Gourley.

• 2:14Speaker 04

  Hi.

• 2:15Conan O'Brien?

  What's going on, gang?

• 2:16Speaker 05

Well, our very own Eduardo is actually going to do a career day at a high school to discuss what he does here on this show.

• 2:23Speaker 03

  Oh, my god.

• 2:25Conan O'Brien?

Wait, so how did this unfold?

• 2:27Speaker 04

Uh, I have a cousin who teaches at Altaloma High School in Rancho Cucamonga. He kinda knew what I did and was like, "Wait, who do you work for?"

• 2:35Conan O'Brien?

  Right.

• 2:36Speaker 04

And he said, "Maybe you should come speak to my students."

• 2:39Conan O'Brien?

  Cool.

• 2:40Speaker 04

Uh, I think so. And I was really, like, up for it. And I was like, "Yeah, I'm totally down for it. Let's do it." And then I was telling these guys that it hit me yesterday that I'm terrified about speaking to high schoolers tomorrow.

• 2:52Speaker 03

  Yeah, same.

• 2:53Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 2:53Speaker 04

I don't know how to market what I do, so maybe you guys can give me some pointers on, like, how would you, Sona, you have practiced with this?

• 3:00Conan O'Brien?

No one is tighter with the high school community than I am.

• 3:03Speaker 03

  Oh, no, no, no, no.

• 3:04Conan O'Brien?

Especially in Rancho Cucamonga. You are speaking my language.

• 3:07Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 3:08Conan O'Brien?

Well, you know, one of the things I would say is if you're talking to people that know the podcast, and a lot of people do, it'd be very easy. But you're gonna be talking to kids who may not know what this is, but they know what podcasts are, right?

• 3:22Speaker 04

I called my cousin as I had that panic attack, and I was like, "All right, prep me. What's, what's my audience?" And he's like, "Look, there's a chance a lot of them don't even know who Conan O'Brien is."

• 3:33Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 3:33Speaker 04

And I said, "Great," because I was gonna, I was gonna start with that, so that gets me nowhere. Um, but then I thought to...

• 3:41Speaker 03

  Gets me nowhere.

• 3:42Speaker 04

According to my cousin, not to me. I would just say that was my instinct.

• 3:46Conan O'Brien?

No, no, and don't, I don't take offense to the phrase, "Conan O'Brien gets me nowhere." Which we, which maybe we should replace needs a friend.

• 3:55Speaker 05

I say that every morning when I wake up.

• 3:58Conan O'Brien?

  But then I thought.

• 3:58Speaker 04

You're brushing your teeth. Then I thought, okay, who are some guests that we've had on that maybe would resonate?

• 4:03Speaker 05

  Oh, there you go.

• 4:04Speaker 04

So I was like, the first person that came to mind was Billie Eilish and Phineas. I'm like, oh, that's a guest I could probably pull and point to.

• 4:10Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 4:11Speaker 04

  Are there any other guests?

• 4:12Speaker 05

  Rahm Emanuel.

• 4:18Conan O'Brien?

Yes, yes. You know, whenever I don't know what to say to kids, I just bring up, I know Rahm Emanuel and it kills.

• 4:25Speaker 05

  Perfect.

• 4:27Speaker 01

  What grade, what age?

• 4:29Speaker 04

I mean, it's freshman through juniors.

• 4:31Speaker 01

Oh, so it's all of high, oh my god.

• 4:33Speaker 05

Do you know like Ryan Reynolds or Han Solo, you know?

• 4:37Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 4:37Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 4:38Conan O'Brien?

I mean, I don't know that Han Solo.

• 4:39Speaker 01

  No, Han Solo.

• 4:40Conan O'Brien?

Deadpool. Ryan Reynolds would help us.

• 4:42Speaker 04

I thought about outputs, you know, but then I was like, will they know?

• 4:44Conan O'Brien?

No, no, they don't. They don't. That's like saying I knew Woodrow Wilson. Woodrow Wilson came in.

• 4:50Speaker 05

Have we had the K-pop Demon Hunter girls on yet?

• 4:53Speaker 04

  No.

• 4:53Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 4:53Conan O'Brien?

  We should.

• 4:55Speaker 05

  See, this is why.

• 4:55Conan O'Brien?

  Hunt tricks.

• 4:56Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 4:57Speaker 01

  Yeah, I'm in.

• 4:58Conan O'Brien?

  Hey, I'm in.

• 4:59Speaker 01

  So are you?

• 5:00Conan O'Brien?

  Six, seven.

• 5:01Speaker 01

What, whoa, my god, that was so uncomfortable for me.

• 5:05Speaker 04

I did think about saying six, seven, like a bunch of times.

• 5:08Conan O'Brien?

Just say six, seven. I've had, I had some young people in the Philippines shout six, seven at me and I, you know, I don't know what happened.

• 5:16Speaker 01

  Is sixty-nine done?

• 5:20Speaker 04

  What?

• 5:20Speaker 05

  You're making it.

• 5:22Conan O'Brien?

In my life, yeah. It's been done for a while.

• 5:25Speaker 01

We don't do that. And like, you remember when people were like, turn to page sixty-nine and everybody would giggle?

• 5:30Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 5:30Speaker 01

We don't do, is that the new?

• 5:32Conan O'Brien?

  No, it's six, seven now.

• 5:33Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 5:33Speaker 05

  What's six, seven?

• 5:35Conan O'Brien?

No one seems to exactly know.

• 5:37Speaker 01

This is awful. Well, no, Adam has kids who are a little older than ours.

• 5:41Speaker 05

My kids say it all the time. They couldn't really tell you. When I, when I ask them what it means, they have to do that and they, and they say that six, seven.

• 5:48Conan O'Brien?

But is it six, nine related?

• 5:50Speaker 05

  No.

• 5:50Conan O'Brien?

No, not at all six, seven related. It comes from originally from a rap song.

• 5:55Speaker 05

  Correct.

• 5:55Speaker 04

  Talking about LaMelo Ball.

• 5:57Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 5:57Speaker 04

  NBA player.

• 5:58Speaker 05

  This is your opener.

• 5:59Speaker 04

Six, seven. Do we do any cool things?

• 6:03Conan O'Brien?

Can I say something? I would say never mention the podcast or what you do. Even though you've been invited there to talk about what you do, it's career day. Just show up and go like, hey, six, seven, everybody, six, seven, yo, yo, yo, six, seven. And then, um, talk about how you like Billie Eilish. And then maybe talk, look up what's the latest thing that's trending. It's gone viral.

• 6:25Speaker 04

I was gonna show a clip of you on Hot Ones, maybe?

• 6:28Conan O'Brien?

  Yes.

• 6:29Speaker 05

  There you go.

• 6:29Speaker 04

This is who I work for?

• 6:30Conan O'Brien?

Oh, no, no, people in, people buried in graveyards know that I did Hot Ones.

• 6:34Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 6:34Conan O'Brien?

So, uh, I mean, I'm talking about corpses, corpses, long dead corpses of pilgrims.

• 6:39Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 6:39Conan O'Brien?

People that died in the 1600s know that I did Hot Ones.

• 6:42Speaker 01

Sure. Do you think if he shows them, if the, if he shows that clip though, will they be like, who is this guy? Or you think they'll be like, oh, he seems cool?

• 6:50Conan O'Brien?

They will say that lady looks insane. That's what will happen. That lady looks like she's in great distress. I hope that lady recovered mentally.

• 6:59Speaker 01

Can I say, I do think that a lot of kids in high school know who you are. I think so. I think we're making jokes, but you also, you hosted the Oscars, you've done a lot of stuff.

• 7:08Conan O'Brien?

Oh, and high schoolers love the Oscars. They're all over it.

• 7:11Speaker 04

  I did.

• 7:12Conan O'Brien?

They'll remember my costume changes. They'll, you know, they'll be all over it.

• 7:17Speaker 01

I don't know. I think that a lot of people know who you are.

• 7:19Conan O'Brien?

Well, uh, I think to give you real advice is the more you can just keep it personal and grounded. And just about this is what I do. You know, you listen to podcasts or when you hear them, um, because everyone, they're listening to some podcasts. You don't realize what the technology that goes into what you actually hear. I mean, that's cool stuff.

• 7:41Speaker 04

Yeah, I did think about setting up like a little faux podcast setup in the classroom and maybe

• 7:46Conan O'Brien?

  Great.

• 7:46Speaker 04

having them sit and just play the role of host, play the role of guest.

• 7:50Conan O'Brien?

No, you're really good at setting up a faux podcast studio. Nice.

• 7:54Speaker 01

Well, and you're cool. You're just naturally very cool and likeable. So you should be fine.

• 7:58Speaker 05

I started with a long prayer.

• 8:00Speaker 01

  Oh, man.

• 8:01Speaker 04

  Yeah. Okay.

• 8:02Speaker 01

They can be very intimidating, high school kids.

• 8:05Speaker 04

It's three periods that I have to speak to back to back to back.

• 8:07Speaker 01

  No.

• 8:08Speaker 04

  Like thirty minutes each.

• 8:09Speaker 01

  They're scary.

• 8:10Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 8:10Speaker 01

  They're very scary.

• 8:11Speaker 04

I'm sorry, you hit me. I got terrified.

• 8:12Conan O'Brien?

You know what? If you, can you show clips at all?

• 8:15Speaker 04

  I can, yeah.

• 8:16Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, I mean, look through, I don't know who we've talked to that would resonate with high school students, but.

• 8:21Speaker 05

Yeah, Ryan Reynolds and Billie Eilish.

• 8:23Speaker 04

  Two, how many episodes?

• 8:24Speaker 05

  Michelle's Honor came to mind.

• 8:25Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah, Michelle's Honor.

• 8:26Conan O'Brien?

  That's a good one.

• 8:27Speaker 01

How about Iowa Debris? Is that her?

• 8:29Conan O'Brien?

  Oh, yeah.

• 8:30Speaker 04

Iowa Debris. You see, I knew.

• 8:31Conan O'Brien?

You know, this makes me think we should only be having, um, people that high school students know on the show for a month. We should do a month of just.

• 8:39Speaker 01

But then we won't know who they are.

• 8:41Conan O'Brien?

That's okay. They'll write some notes for me. And then I'll know, you know?

• 8:46Speaker 05

  Six, seven.

• 8:48Speaker 01

  Stop doing it.

• 8:48Speaker 05

  I don't know what I'm doing.

• 8:49Speaker 01

  You guys are killing it.

• 8:51Speaker 05

  I never birthed it.

• 8:52Speaker 01

I know, but like, when you start saying it, that's when they're like, ugh, no, now it's lame.

• 8:57Speaker 05

But I'm not trying to say it to do it.

• 8:59Conan O'Brien?

  Now I know ASAP Rocky.

• 9:02Speaker 01

  Oh, yes.

• 9:03Conan O'Brien?

Yeah. You should just say, I work for someone.

• 9:05Speaker 04

  Who knows ASAP?

• 9:06Conan O'Brien?

  Who knows ASAP Rocky.

• 9:07Speaker 01

Who's in a movie with ASAP Rocky.

• 9:09Conan O'Brien?

Who's in a movie with ASAP Rocky. And then they'll be like, we don't know who she is, but ASAP Rocky, yeah.

• 9:16Speaker 04

Yes, I love it. Okay, so get ASAP Rocky on the podcast now that you brought him up.

• 9:20Conan O'Brien?

He says he wants to do it.

• 9:21Speaker 04

  And it's Tyler, the creator.

• 9:23Conan O'Brien?

He says he wants to do it, but he said it in that way, like, I gotta get rid of Conan. Hey, I should do your podcast someday. Uh, man, I gotta go.

• 9:31Speaker 01

And then he's suddenly unavailable all the time.

• 9:33Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 9:34Speaker 01

  Okay, that's okay.

• 9:35Conan O'Brien?

And I keep calling him and Rihanna picks up and she's like, he's not here. And I hear him in the background, good, honey, good.

• 9:42Speaker 05

  Good, honey, good.

• 9:44Conan O'Brien?

  Good, honey, that's.

• 9:47Conan O'Brien?

Good, just as I instructed. Who says just as I instructed?

• 9:51Speaker 05

  Who says good, honey, good?

• 9:53Conan O'Brien?

Good, honey, good. That's how he talks. That's ASAP for you, or as I called him when I first met him, AKA Rocky.

• 10:01Speaker 01

  No, you didn't.

• 10:02Conan O'Brien?

  No, I didn't.

• 10:02Speaker 01

Oh, my God, I would have been horrified.

• 10:04Conan O'Brien?

I went, oh, my God, AKA Rocky.

• 10:06Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 10:06Conan O'Brien?

And he went, it's ASAP. And he went, hmm, I suppose. You rapper you, that's what I said. Okay, honey. Well, I'll report back.

• 10:15Speaker 01

Yes, I want to hear how this goes.

• 10:17Conan O'Brien?

I do too. I want to hear how it goes. Unless it went badly and I don't want to hear a lot about how they knew nothing about me. That's gonna be horrifying to me. Just make it up, that they went crazy. We loved him in the early 90s, they say. My guest today is an actress, comedian, and writer who starred in the hilarious movie Bottoms. Now you can see her in the new HBO series, which she also created and co-wrote, I Love L.A. I'm very excited she's here today.

• 10:47Conan O'Brien?

  Rachel Sennott, welcome.

• 10:53Speaker 02

I feel included about being Conan O'Brien's friend. Okay, so that's a sentence that doesn't make sense phonetically or grammatically, but what I'm thinking of, do you remember when we both gave speeches?

• 11:06Conan O'Brien?

  Yes.

• 11:06Speaker 02

Well, you hosted, I gave a speech.

• 11:08Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah. What was the event?

• 11:10Speaker 02

It was raising money for a children's hospital.

• 11:13Conan O'Brien?

And I remember I took a big cut of what they raised that night. You did.

• 11:17Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 11:18Conan O'Brien?

That's part of my deal, and the children's hospital didn't know that.

• 11:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:21Conan O'Brien?

And I said, "No, no, I get 80%." And they were like, "But the children," I said, "Fuck that." Remember that? Yeah. And the children were there crying.

• 11:28Speaker 02

And they were upset, and you said, "Too bad."

• 11:33Speaker 02

  "Too bad, bitches."

• 11:36Speaker 02

But other than that, it was lovely. It was so...

• 11:38Conan O'Brien?

They would have raised a lot of money.

• 11:40Speaker 02

They would. They raised actually tons of money, even still, the 20% that they got to keep.

• 11:46Conan O'Brien?

I want to start, I know we've already been talking, and I've been really looking forward to this, because you came to my attention when I saw Bottoms. I was really charmed by it. I really liked it a lot. And then this morning, I woke up early, because I'm jet lagged from, I was shooting in another country. And so I, I, I watched it again, this morning.

• 12:08Speaker 02

  Bottoms?

• 12:09Conan O'Brien?

Bottoms. I watched it this morning.

• 12:10Speaker 02

  Oh my god.

• 12:11Conan O'Brien?

And I was just like, yup.

• 12:12Speaker 02

I also wonder how it hits at like 6:00 in the morning. I'm like, it feels very different at 6:00 in the morning.

• 12:20Conan O'Brien?

  Guess what? It still works.

• 12:22Speaker 02

It still works? Okay, love it.

• 12:23Conan O'Brien?

  It's really funny.

• 12:24Speaker 02

  Oh my god.

• 12:25Conan O'Brien?

And down to one detail I love is the football players play on a field that has like a massive 200-year-old tree.

• 12:34Conan O'Brien?

On it, that would never exist on a real football field. But you guys had it there because you needed something to happen and you didn't give a fuck. And I loved it. And I'm sorry, I'm swearing so much. I'm not gonna do that anymore.

• 12:44Speaker 02

Are we not supposed to swear?

• 12:45Conan O'Brien?

No, no, I, I'm just doing it too much. I know, but I'm doing like I'm just a sailor that just got on Shirley.

• 12:49Speaker 02

It's kind of cool and edgy. Yeah. It's making me wanna swear.

• 12:53Conan O'Brien?

  Well, I shouldn't do it. I, I, it's not right. It's not right.

• 12:55Speaker 02

  It's not right.

• 12:56Conan O'Brien?

I heard you were coming on the podcast and I thought, well, I don't, I don't know what Rachel's promoting. And they said, well, she has this new show. It's gonna be on HBO. We're sending you five episodes. And I thought, five? You know, I'll watch one. I'll deign to watch one because I, my time is so precious. And last night, my wife and I click on, we watch one, love it. And I go, there's another one. We watch two. And I say, another one. We watch three, another one, four. And then my wife is always going to bed at 9:30 and she's like, I think I have to go to sleep. And I went, we're watching another one. And suddenly I'm Mussolini yelling in the house.

• 13:35Speaker 02

  Screaming at your wife.

• 13:36Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, yeah, screaming at my wife, uh, dogs, cats. And I watched, uh, five of I Love LA. And it's really, really fun. So that's my compliment upfront.

• 13:46Speaker 02

No, it's huge. I, I feel like I do the same thing when people send me like a chunk of stuff. And I, I was saying this to you before. It's like, I'm like, I'll skim through. I'll write down like three moments that I like and then I'm done. And then I can reference them and be like, see, I like all these three moments. I watched the whole thing. So watch it, unless you're lying to my face, but that's okay. Cause I felt, no, I'll never know.

• 14:10Conan O'Brien?

  I'm a sociopath.

• 14:12Speaker 02

  Me too.

• 14:12Conan O'Brien?

I'm people pleasing. Later, why did we have to have her on? I hated every second of it. I hate her.

• 14:19Speaker 02

Get her out of there. No, but it, I, that means a lot because I think like, we wanted to create that driving. Like my favorite shows that I watched in college are like those Sunday night shows where you leave and you're like, I can't wait for next Sunday and I wanna know it. Like, I want that pull. And also like, it's very much of the generation, whatever, but I hope that it's funny.

• 14:43Speaker 02

To everyone, you know what I mean? And you brings you into the world and doesn't feel like this is only for these people. Like it's for hopefully for anyone who wants to watch a bunch of girls text each other and and hook up with people and talk and you know.

• 15:00Conan O'Brien?

Well, I might be a pervert, but. You're also describing my life.

• 15:04Speaker 02

Yeah. You're like, um, that's my Wednesday, honey.

• 15:08Conan O'Brien?

Me and the girls. Matt is Matt is constantly texting me and texting me.

• 15:13Speaker 02

  Whoa.

• 15:14Conan O'Brien?

And then, uh, we get together and we have a Hailey Bieber shake and you know, so we know.

• 15:19Speaker 02

  You gotta, you gotta.

• 15:21Conan O'Brien?

  We know what's going on.

• 15:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:23Conan O'Brien?

  I've felt seen.

• 15:24Speaker 02

Did you identify with one of the characters more? Did you feel like you're like, I'm totally a Zulula?

• 15:30Conan O'Brien?

  Well.

• 15:35Conan O'Brien?

I'm team Maya. Isn't that your character Maya?

• 15:38Speaker 02

  I'm Maya.

• 15:39Conan O'Brien?

Yeah. I identified with the fact that I came from the East Coast, uh, Boston, then went to school in Boston, then left in, this will really date me, but 1985 with my writing partner, Greg Daniels. And we went to LA and I thought I had been dropped on the surface of Mars. And your show is very much about someone who comes from New York.

• 16:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:03Conan O'Brien?

And you come to LA and you think your friend is coming with you and then she doesn't.

• 16:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:09Conan O'Brien?

And you have to make a go in LA. And I have to tell you, I remember that so clearly. And so, yes, the references changed. There wasn't social media. There wasn't the kind of business that your character's working in. There wasn't oat milk. There wasn't, you know, chai. We didn't have that. But what I remember. You guys didn't have milk, did you? There was no milk either. No milk either.

• 16:33Speaker 02

And there was no Hailey Bieber smoothie.

• 16:34Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, there was, there was war rationing.

• 16:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:37Conan O'Brien?

Cause World War II had just ended.

• 16:38Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 16:39Conan O'Brien?

So there was, uh, they put an embargo on all Hailey Bieber smoothies back then. Because they knew she'd be born in like sixty years. For the effort, for the war.

• 16:46Speaker 02

They needed the collagen for the war.

• 16:47Conan O'Brien?

We need your Hailey Bieber smoothie for the war, says FDR. Make a victory garden to make your Hailey Bieber shake. So, that didn't exist, but what I remember is, you know, when you worry about the references, the references can change, but the fundamental elements don't change.

• 17:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:02Conan O'Brien?

Which is, it's horrifying to come out to LA when you grow up in that other coast. And I was horrified.

• 17:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:09Conan O'Brien?

I hated this place for a year and a half, absolutely hated it.

• 17:12Speaker 02

Which is short for the amount of time to hate it, to feel like, what the fuck is going on?

• 17:16Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 17:17Speaker 02

Like, I also just felt like weird. Like, everyone was like, "You talk so fast and you're really stressed." Like, it's like, and like, you're like, "I need to get on your guys' level, but I can't."

• 17:28Conan O'Brien?

  You can't.

• 17:29Speaker 02

  You know, it's crazy. Yeah.

• 17:31Conan O'Brien?

  You can't.

• 17:32Speaker 01

Matt and I are the locals who are like, "It is fast."

• 17:36Conan O'Brien?

I feel scared about going to New York.

• 17:37Speaker 01

Yeah, that's why I get scared too. Same thing, the rhythm's different.

• 17:41Conan O'Brien?

Sona has been my assistant for a really long time, and Sona came with me, I think it was 2011 or 12, and you came to New York, and Sona has grown up here.

• 17:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:53Conan O'Brien?

She freaked out about cabs. I remember you freaking out about cabs and saying, "I don't want to sit in there, other people have sat there too."

• 18:01Speaker 01

You make me sound like such a princess.

• 18:03Conan O'Brien?

  But I'm sorry, you were.

• 18:04Speaker 01

It was weird, it is weird, it is weird. Uh, but you know, it is, it's a completely different rhythm on the East. It's so much more intense.

• 18:13Speaker 02

You're like, "I have my car that I cry in, and I eat lunch in out of a container."

• 18:18Conan O'Brien?

I vomit in my own car.

• 18:19Speaker 02

Yes, I puke in my car.

• 18:21Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 18:22Speaker 02

Not a stranger's car with other people's puke. No, you have your like, your haven and your space, and then it's, it's so jarring and weird. And then like, you, I feel like also, once you've lived on both, you're never over either. Like, it feels like I'm like, I, it's like I forever have like, two boyfriends or divorced parents or something.

• 18:43Conan O'Brien?

  You're schizophrenic.

• 18:43Speaker 02

Yes, you're constantly, it's a push and pull.

• 18:46Conan O'Brien?

And people always say to me, they want me to declare, "Yeah, LA sucks, I like New York," or, you know. I'm done with New York. It's LA, man. And it's not, neither one is true.

• 18:57Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 18:58Conan O'Brien?

  Now I like them both.

• 19:00Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 19:00Conan O'Brien?

I see the strength of both. I think there are cliches about LA that just aren't true.

• 19:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 19:05Conan O'Brien?

I think because LA is a much larger surface area. There's so many different neighborhoods that are constantly, I mean, everyone gets gentrified eventually, but they keep inventing new neighborhoods. Yeah. Where artists can live.

• 19:20Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 19:20Conan O'Brien?

And I think there is amazing art, artistic output in Los Angeles. It's just not shoved in your face. You can't just walk down into Greenwich Village and there it is. Meanwhile, in New York, I don't know how an artist would survive in New York now. Because it's, it's, everything's a gap and, you know.

• 19:37Speaker 02

  Everything's, oh, an actual gap.

• 19:39Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 19:39Speaker 02

I was like, I was like, yeah, there's a gap of, uh, and then I was like, no, a gap. A gap or a Zara. It's a gap and a Zara.

• 19:47Conan O'Brien?

A friend of mine and I were walking around and we tried to find CBGBs and it's, it's like a Varvato store. Is it? And, and we were in of like this store and we were looking at the old CBGBs and we were trying to remember like, how's this layout? How's this layout? And a guy who worked there who was trying to show us like a jean jacket said, oh, no, no, the stage was over here. You know, ignore these beautiful pants. This was the stage and that's where the Talking Heads performed.

• 20:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:13Conan O'Brien?

And that's where the Ramones were. And I'm just like.

• 20:15Speaker 02

The Ramones were by the Blazers, yeah. And you're like, fabulous. I can feel the history in here. Wow.

• 20:23Conan O'Brien?

  The $90 t-shirts. That's, that's where Blondie performed.

• 20:34Conan O'Brien?

You know, winning an award, that's a big achievement, right?

• 20:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, I love awards.

• 20:37Conan O'Brien?

Every now and then in life, maybe something nice like that comes your way. Winning them consistently is almost impossible. It just doesn't happen. You know? Well, guess what? Winning five times in six years? You know what that sounds like to me? Sustained excellence.

• 20:51Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 20:52Conan O'Brien?

• 21:00Speaker 01

I drive a Hyundai Palisade and I love my car. I love it. I love driving it around.

• 21:05Conan O'Brien?

I've been tooling around in an Ioniq 5N, which I love.

• 22:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:02Conan O'Brien?

Just accept the premise and we'll move ahead.

• 22:04Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 22:04Conan O'Brien?

I'm a very important person to you. What would you get me from Macy's for the holidays?

• 22:10Speaker 01

  A vase.

• 22:11Conan O'Brien?

No, I don't want a vase. I want something better.

• 22:14Speaker 01

  A jacket.

• 22:16Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, nice jacket. I love a nice jacket.

• 22:17Speaker 01

Oh, yeah, that jacket, nice jacket.

• 22:18Conan O'Brien?

So now you have to do it, because you said you would.

• 22:20Speaker 01

Aw, man, I didn't know you were doing that.

• 22:22Conan O'Brien?

Well, I know the holidays, I know the holidays are months away, but it's never too early, Sona, to find gifts that I will love, gifts I will wear, and surprises that make the season unforgettable for me.

• 22:34Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 22:34Conan O'Brien?

So, you have to admit, the holidays, it's really about hanging with the people you love.

• 23:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:05Conan O'Brien?

And getting to be yourself, not going to some stuffy holiday party where you need to conform to what the man wants you to think about the holidays.

• 23:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:15Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, it's about being yourself. Turn your holiday time into Miller time by enjoying a Miller Lite in a place where you're free to enjoy yourself on a walk with a cousin. With a cousin? Why are they getting all specific about?

• 23:26Speaker 01

  Because it's family.

• 23:26Conan O'Brien?

But what about a niece or a nephew?

• 23:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:31Conan O'Brien?

Like a walk with an ex-wife? I don't know. I mean, they're just throwing, that's a weird, they just made a very specific choice.

• 23:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:37Conan O'Brien?

Now's the time for those unexpected holiday side guests and enjoy a great tasting light beer. 'Tis Miller time, as Dickens wrote. Miller Lite is brewed for taste, the taste you can depend on. The original light beer since 1975 and still iconic more than 50 years later. I like to be with my bros, my chums, my posse, crack open a Miller Lite, take a swig, a sip, look around and see my friends. We've known each other forever and we're just hanging out.

• 24:05Speaker 01

Yeah, you guys are just doing chest bumps and high-fiving.

• 24:07Conan O'Brien?

Miller Lite is great taste done right. Go to millerlite.com/conan to find delivery options near you, or you can pick up some Miller Lite pretty much anywhere they sell beer. 'Tis Miller time. Celebrate responsibly Miller Brewing Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 96 calories and 3.2 carbs per 12 ounces.

• 24:30Conan O'Brien?

You inhabit this other world that I have some familiarity with, which is writer slash performer. I mean, you've written so much, pretty much all this stuff that you've been in. Haven't you written just about everything?

• 24:41Speaker 02

I guess, starting, beginning of my career, so I and I did a Comedy Central, like, web series together. That was like, three episodes. Shiva Baby, I didn't write, my friend Emma Seligman, who directed it, wrote. And then Em and I wrote Bottoms together. And then, this I wrote. This was the most I ever thought as an actor, or like, on set, I'm like, barely thinking about acting, because I'm directing, I directed the finale.

• 25:09Conan O'Brien?

Right. You wear a lot of hats.

• 25:10Speaker 02

I wore, it was, it was, yeah, it was like, and then prepping, and then we're rewriting stuff, but then we're editing the show while we're shooting it. The good thing is, my character is like, stressed, so I was just like... I don't have to go, you know what I mean?

• 25:25Conan O'Brien?

You should make all of your characters stressed.

• 25:28Speaker 02

I kind of have, in a way. It's like, I'm kind of either stressed or stupid, or both. It's like, one of the, I, there's like, two sides to me. And the, it's somewhere in that space.

• 25:39Conan O'Brien?

A stressed, stupid, young woman. Whenever I, if I ever have to-

• 25:44Speaker 02

  Crashes her car, yeah.

• 25:45Conan O'Brien?

If I ever have to pitch you something, if I write a script and I want to pitch, pitch it to you, I'm gonna start everything with, "A stressed, stupid woman."

• 25:53Conan O'Brien?

Moves from LA to New York, or New York to LA.

• 25:58Speaker 02

But, it was, it was like, um, you know this, it's like balancing those things and being like, kind of, which role do I need to be the most today? Like, there was a day, like, there are some days on set where I was like, "I'm more of a writer today than an actor, I'm directing today." But then there were days, like, there was a day that I had like, uh, multiple sex scenes, which by the way, oh my god, this was so funny because it was like, all the sex stuff in the show, I'm like, I wrote or was in the room for writing. And I think like, for me, like, sex and stuff, like, sex, if you're gonna show it in a show or a movie, like, it should be like, funny, it should tell you something about the relationship.

• 26:43Speaker 02

Cause I think if I look at my relationships, I can immediately tell like, where we are, based off of like, how the sex is, do you know what I mean? Definitely.

• 26:53Conan O'Brien?

  Okay.

• 26:53Speaker 02

Do you feel that way too?

• 26:54Conan O'Brien?

You're talking to the wrong guy.

• 26:55Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 26:57Conan O'Brien?

  Literally a virgin.

• 26:58Speaker 01

I just mean, I agree with, I agree with you.

• 27:01Conan O'Brien?

  No, explain what you mean.

• 27:03Speaker 01

Well, it's very different in the beginning than it is.

• 27:05Conan O'Brien?

No, he means, explain what is sex.

• 27:06Speaker 02

  Oh, sorry.

• 27:07Conan O'Brien?

  What goes where?

• 27:08Speaker 02

  Okay, totally.

• 27:09Conan O'Brien?

Show me what's alls. No, no, I'm kidding, I'm kidding. But, but anyway, um-

• 27:14Speaker 02

Yeah, I know what you mean.

• 27:15Conan O'Brien?

  Yes, yes.

• 27:16Speaker 02

Yes, yes, like where I was like, I want all of the sex to feel like it's in the show for a reason, basically.

• 27:23Conan O'Brien?

  Well, in the pilot episode.

• 27:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:26Conan O'Brien?

Opens with you and your boyfriend having sex. And what's funny about it is an earthquake, I'm not giving anything away, because it's the beginning of the first episode. And I thought it was a really good opening. It's LA, so there's an earthquake. And he's like, oh, my God, there's an earthquake, but you're close to orgasming and you just want to keep it going.

• 27:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:45Conan O'Brien?

So you tell him, I think it'll be all right, it'll be all right. And then he's, the earthquake stops, you keep going, and then the earthquake starts again. And he's like, no, I think we really have to like, get out of the building right now. And you're like, eh, I'm almost there. Can you just choke me?

• 28:03Conan O'Brien?

And I was like, OK. There's a familiarity here.

• 28:06Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 28:06Conan O'Brien?

That happens when you're in a committed relationship.

• 28:09Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 28:09Conan O'Brien?

  There's a familiarity, but there's also, and a little.

• 28:12Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 28:13Conan O'Brien?

  It's a little like utilitarian.

• 28:15Speaker 02

Yes, it's almost like, do the three things that I need, really quick.

• 28:18Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 28:19Speaker 02

One, two, three. Like, I'm almost there, you did one and two, finish, finish her off.

• 28:24Conan O'Brien?

  Right.

• 28:24Speaker 02

  You know?

• 28:25Conan O'Brien?

So it was not, to your point, it was not in any way gratuitous. It was funny.

• 28:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:31Conan O'Brien?

And it was telling me right away how your character's funny. These people are connected in a very familiar way.

• 28:39Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 28:40Conan O'Brien?

And so, yes, you're right. It was not just, we open on sex scene so that we can get the viewers in. It was, it accomplished a purpose.

• 28:47Speaker 02

It accomplished a purpose. But it was, it was really funny to me on this specific show, because like, we of course had an intimacy coordinator, but she would like, I would have a conversation with her as like, the showrunner and be like, you know, like, we want to hear what the actors are comfortable with. Ideally, this scene accomplishes like, this sort of feeling, or like, we'd like to shoot it this way, whatever. And then she would call up the actors. But so, I would have the conversation with her as the showrunner, and she would be like, totally. And then she calls me like, 30 minutes later, and she's like, so this is what they're thinking? I'm like. I just talked to you, love. She's like, you tell me what you feel comfortable with. In the script.

• 29:27Conan O'Brien?

  That's hilarious.

• 29:28Speaker 02

In the script, you're giving a blowjob.

• 29:30Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 29:30Speaker 02

Do we even want to go there? I'm like, I wrote that. I'm like, what? And so she's like, I know, but, but are we gonna do that? And I was like, yes, I, yes. Like, so that was so funny and sort of bizarre, like going at that from like two angles, whatever.

• 29:46Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 29:47Speaker 02

There was a day on set where I had like an emotional scene and then like, I'm not gonna say what it's happening because it's, it's sort of gives something away, but. Sort of two, two sex scenes in a day. Sort of it was like sex scene, sex scene, lunch, beans for lunch. And then, and then like emotional cry scene. And that day I was like, today I'm an actor. Like today I was like, and that's when you have your team of other support. Like I'm like, MF, there's questions about alts. You got it, girl. I'm naked and I'm crying. You know what I mean? But then on another day, you put on the other hat and you're like, today I can answer the questions about that.

• 30:27Speaker 02

So it was, it was interesting, like balancing those, but like finding what thing you were leaning more into on the day. If that makes sense.

• 30:35Conan O'Brien?

Well, what makes sense to me is a lot of my career, starting with the late night show. I can use my thinking head when we're thinking during the day, when we're working on the show. And then when it's time to go, it's 5:30, guests are here, band is playing. I need to get makeup on and I need to let all that go and then be the guy who's just in it.

• 30:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:57Conan O'Brien?

And if the guest puts something out there that's a surprise, drop everything you thought about.

• 31:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:04Conan O'Brien?

  And go that way.

• 31:05Speaker 02

  Go there.

• 31:06Conan O'Brien?

And go there because that's what's happening right now. And I found that, and I don't know if you can relate to this, as an East Coast Catholic, what I can, you know, you're Italian, is that right?

• 31:15Speaker 02

  Half, half Sicilian, half Irish.

• 31:17Conan O'Brien?

Okay, my God, you're screwed. Well, I, as a, as a hundred percent Irish and, but we're, we both come from very similar stuff. And what I can relate to is there's this combination of restraint and busting through the restraint.

• 31:31Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 31:31Conan O'Brien?

And that's where this magical thing happens.

• 31:33Speaker 02

  Yes, but we like control.

• 31:35Conan O'Brien?

We like control, but also we secretly love the loss of control.

• 31:39Speaker 02

I know. Sorry, I almost was like, girl, yes.

• 31:43Conan O'Brien?

You can call me, trust me, you can call me girl.

• 31:45Speaker 02

I was just saying that, I mean, that's the whole Catholic thing. That's why that.

• 31:50Conan O'Brien?

  It's a yin yang, it's both.

• 31:51Speaker 02

Yes, that's why it's like, it's like, you're like, why, why are you guys freaks? Not saying you're a freak, but I'm just saying Catholics. Do you know what I mean? Cause you're like, you have, you live in this push and pull of like, control, not control, whatever. But I feel, yeah, I'm always reaching for control, whatever. But the most beautiful things happen sometimes when you just are like in flow, free flowing.

• 32:13Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 32:14Speaker 02

And you're right, it's like, those things are a gift. And like, when something goes wrong on set or whatever, it turns into the funniest moment or the most beautiful moment. But I feel that way too, where I'm a planner, I like to know what's happening.

• 32:28Conan O'Brien?

Which is, which is good. That's the lesson of all of this is it's not good versus bad, it's you need both. And then another part of this that I find fascinating, which I know nothing about, and I'm freely admit I know nothing about it, but you play someone who, you're best friends with somebody, she's an influencer, you were helping her be an influencer. The idea was you were both gonna move out to LA and you're gonna manage your friend who's an influencer. She decides to stay in New York, you go it alone. And so you're working at a company where you're managing or helping to take care of influencers. I know nothing about that, but I also know that it's a huge part of an industry right now. Maybe the industry.

• 33:13Conan O'Brien?

I haven't seen it depicted yet. I was watching the show and I was thinking, oh my God, you're right. These influencers who make a funny video or a meme and they're holding a bag, a certain bag, they, that is a business.

• 33:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:27Conan O'Brien?

They're making a lot of money.

• 33:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:29Conan O'Brien?

They're, they're, they're getting sent a lot of products. And of course there'd be a management system for them. And I don't know anything about it.

• 33:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:36Conan O'Brien?

I mean, no one's, people actively don't want me making videos where I hold a product.

• 33:40Speaker 02

Yeah, I actually want that. I'm like, afterwards, we'll do a video of you in this bag.

• 33:45Conan O'Brien?

I've been paid a lot of money not to hold a purse. Yeah, exactly.

• 33:50Speaker 02

No, but I felt like, I'm so happy you say that because we kept talking about the show like a reference point being like Entourage for internet it girls.

• 33:59Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 33:59Speaker 02

Because we were like, I feel like we've seen Hollywood done a lot. And I feel like the internet is such its own world and business. And it's not separate from Hollywood, there's crossover. But I think like, I was like, this is how I came up. I came up being online. Any of my friends who are like, working in this industry now, came up online. I also know people who just do that. That's their only job is like the internet and their videos or fashion or whatever. And so I think also like, the internet, people like sometimes struggle to show the internet in film and TV because it moves so quickly.

• 34:43Conan O'Brien?

Yes, it's evolving so rapidly that if you try and depict it and your project isn't coming out for nine months, by the time it comes out, people are like, well, that's lame.

• 34:52Speaker 02

Yeah, it's dated. It's very dated. And so I was like, the way we tried to do it was make our own internet in the show where it moves and lives and breathes in the same way like the internet does. But we don't reference anything specific. It's like, exists in the same way as it does for us where it like informs all the characters' lives, it's part of their lives and their business. But we don't, it doesn't, hopefully, doesn't feel clunky or like, yeah, we, we get it. You know what I mean? Because no one wants to see, the other thing we kind of took from Entourage is like, you don't see too much of like Vince acting. You see like his world and his like friend group and their, their dynamics.

• 35:37Speaker 02

But it's like, you, that's what he does, but you don't see it. Like, it's like, we don't need to see Tallulah posting every second.

• 35:44Conan O'Brien?

Well, on the Dick Van Dyke Show, which is the, you know, oldest reference I can come up with, this is literally, it literally starts, that show literally starts before I was born. So it's. Old even for me.

• 35:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:56Conan O'Brien?

But when I was growing up, that was a show about, for you kids out there listening to this interview, that was a show about a comedy writer. And that had not been depicted yet because I think this is a time when, you know, people are, everything's so meta now. People all know behind the scenes. Everyone's so savvy.

• 36:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:14Conan O'Brien?

But back then, people honestly didn't think that, I think shows were writing, you know, that that's just Lucy. Lucy's kooky.

• 36:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:21Conan O'Brien?

No, no, she has writers and they work all of this out and it's, but, so it was a show about a comedy writer and what they never did was they never really showed you the sketches.

• 36:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:31Conan O'Brien?

And I thought it was all of them, well, I think we got it for today and then it was about their lives around that. And it's the same thing.

• 36:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:40Conan O'Brien?

All these years later, I always, it's Pulp Fiction.

• 36:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:44Conan O'Brien?

They never show you what's in the suitcase. It's just a light. And it's such a smart thing to do, but that's Tarantino saying, there's this thing that's incredibly valuable.

• 36:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:53Conan O'Brien?

And everybody wants it. And you don't even need to know any more than that.

• 36:57Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's what you,

• 36:57Conan O'Brien?

  But that's the whole concept.

• 36:58Speaker 02

That's what matters. Yeah, what you said about the Dick Van Dyke show.

• 37:01Conan O'Brien?

  Yep.

• 37:02Speaker 02

Which I'm familiar with, but haven't really given it a full dive in.

• 37:05Conan O'Brien?

  It's in black and white.

• 37:06Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 37:07Conan O'Brien?

  It's in black and white.

• 37:08Speaker 02

  Should I check it out?

• 37:09Conan O'Brien?

  I'll colorize it for you.

• 37:10Speaker 02

Okay, perfect. You'll put it in little 30 second clips and you'll cut it together with a video of someone playing with slime next to it. And then I can watch it.

• 37:18Conan O'Brien?

  No, it'll be someone unwrapping.

• 37:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 37:21Conan O'Brien?

Unwrapping a box and then Dick Van Dyke's in there doing his shtick.

• 37:25Speaker 02

I love it. In 10 second clips, I'll go, ooh.

• 37:27Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 37:28Speaker 02

Um, but like, the same thing. The other thing is I was like, nothing is really new. Like, I think I felt certain times during this where it was like, I've gotta make something totally new and like, you know, you're gonna be compared to things and you wanna do your own thing, but it's like, everything is like from what comes before it, but you have to take, you know, your own blend of references and ideas. At the end of the day, people are people, like, relationships are like, this era, the moment of like, your late twenties is always, oh, I wanna know about if you had a Saturn return. Did I ask you about that?

• 38:03Conan O'Brien?

  What?

• 38:04Speaker 02

A Saturn return? No, I don't know what that is. Yeah. Are you going through yours right now? No, I'm 32, so. Okay.

• 38:11Conan O'Brien?

  Wait, what's this?

• 38:12Speaker 02

But did you, a Saturn, a Saturn return is like end of your twenties.

• 38:15Conan O'Brien?

Oh, oh my God, I thought you were gonna return a car, the Saturn, because of a defect. That's where I went. So I thought, well, if you're not happy with the Saturn.

• 38:24Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 38:25Speaker 01

You think Jo couldn't return her Saturn because she's 32?

• 38:28Speaker 05

  Jo couldn't return her Saturn.

• 38:29Conan O'Brien?

That's a policy that they have.

• 38:30Speaker 05

That car company's been defunct for 15 years at least. I don't even know what it is.

• 38:36Conan O'Brien?

Hey, I only know because Dick Van Dyke drove a Saturn. Dick Van drove a black and white Saturn.

• 38:42Speaker 01

  Oh my god.

• 38:42Conan O'Brien?

  No, um.

• 38:43Speaker 05

I want to know about this.

• 38:44Speaker 02

  Yeah, like when you're 20.

• 38:45Conan O'Brien?

  So you're into astrology?

• 38:46Speaker 02

  I am.

• 38:46Conan O'Brien?

Okay, tell me what Saturn return means.

• 38:49Speaker 02

Okay, I have so many, I'm gonna maybe need to pull up your chart or like dive in. Because do you know what sign you are?

• 38:54Conan O'Brien?

  I'm an Aries.

• 38:55Speaker 02

  An Aries.

• 38:56Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, what does that mean to you if I say Aries?

• 38:58Speaker 02

An Aries, you're a Virgo with a backbone.

• 39:01Conan O'Brien?

  Okay, I understand.

• 39:02Speaker 02

  Okay, totally.

• 39:03Speaker 05

  But you're a Libra, that's kind of a pussy.

• 39:06Speaker 02

  Do you know?

• 39:09Speaker 02

Do you know you're rising in your moon?

• 39:10Conan O'Brien?

  No, I don't.

• 39:11Speaker 02

  Okay, we'll find it later.

• 39:12Conan O'Brien?

  But.

• 39:13Speaker 02

But basically, an Aries is like fire.

• 39:16Conan O'Brien?

  Right.

• 39:16Speaker 02

Don't mess with you, but you have like an order to you, like you could have a, you, a temper isn't what I would say, but it's like fiery and it's like, don't mess with me, don't mess with the people I love.

• 39:27Conan O'Brien?

I would say I have, I can be intense.

• 39:29Speaker 01

You can be intense, you can. I think because you're particular about how you like your comedy to be.

• 39:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:36Speaker 01

And I think if people hinder that or overwork you in a certain way, it's frustrating.

• 39:41Conan O'Brien?

There's so many things that I don't care about. And then if it comes to comedy.

• 39:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:45Conan O'Brien?

Something where I'm supposed to be funny, if someone's getting in the way, I become like an insane Viking.

• 39:52Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 39:53Conan O'Brien?

  With a broadsword.

• 39:54Speaker 02

Yes, you have your hills that you'll die on. You're like, this is what I care about.

• 39:57Speaker 01

  Are they very passive aggressive?

• 40:00Speaker 02

  Aries?

• 40:00Speaker 01

Yeah. Or are they just aggressive?

• 40:02Speaker 02

I think that's the Catholic. I think that's not astrology, I think that's something else.

• 40:07Conan O'Brien?

  So tell me.

• 40:08Speaker 02

Because we're all, but we're made of a ball.

• 40:10Conan O'Brien?

But let's, let's get to this thing because you talk about it in the show and it's really fascinating because I've had this experience of, well, I know exactly when it happened, but it's happened a bunch of times.

• 40:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:20Conan O'Brien?

When I'm in New York, I go, we sometimes tape podcasts in New York when I'm there, and we do them at Sirius XM, which is in midtown, right across from Rockefeller Center, my old stomping ground. And I'll go into the lobby, and there have been a couple of times where, there was one time in particular where there were a bunch of young women who I think were waiting to gather to go to lunch. And they saw me and they came over, they said, can we get a selfie? And I said, sure. And I just started chatting with them about, how's it going, what's up? And gave him a little bit of advice, probably like the advice I gave you, because I'm constantly lecturing young people. But at one point, they, some of the women started talking about, oh my god, I'm so old. And I said, how old are you? And they're like, we're 28. And I like, I wasn't eating anything, but I started choking on imaginary food.

• 41:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:06Conan O'Brien?

I was, I was doing a spit take with no water. I was like, what are you, you're 28 and you're talking about how old you are? And I forgot, that just sounds insane to me right now. But I do remember getting out of college, moving out to LA, turning 23, then turning 24 and thinking, oh my god, it's over for me.

• 41:26Speaker 02

  It's so over.

• 41:28Conan O'Brien?

And so, I basically yelled at these people.

• 41:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:31Conan O'Brien?

And said, you have no idea how young you are, but I know that, you know, your character has her 28th birthday, and it's kind of traumatic. And I think, what? What is a Saturn Returns?

• 41:41Speaker 02

It's, so, I, it's like three years, but there's like a period in it, it's different. It happens sometime between 27 and 30. And it's basically like your reckoning of like, I feel like it shakes up your life, which is why I'm interested to hear like, if you can remember something from the end of your twenties.

• 42:00Conan O'Brien?

You bet I can. You bet I can.

• 42:03Speaker 02

And I'm guessing it's your Saturn Return, because it shakes everything up. And then like,

• 42:07Conan O'Brien?

  Wow.

• 42:07Speaker 02

You go through a breakup, or you lose a job, or you blah blah blah, whatever, something chaotic. And by the way,

• 42:12Conan O'Brien?

  I've got a huge one.

• 42:13Speaker 02

Can't freaking wait. But it's like, you feel like,

• 42:17Conan O'Brien?

You said that in a way like, please don't ever tell me.

• 42:19Speaker 02

  No.

• 42:19Conan O'Brien?

Can't fucking wait. Shut up. Go ahead. That's okay. It's okay.

• 42:24Speaker 02

I was just saying, it's like, it happens to everyone, but it feels like it's only happening to you. And then it lands you where you're meant to be.

• 42:31Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 42:32Speaker 02

Is kind of, but tell me your story.

• 42:34Conan O'Brien?

Oh, it's so simple, which is, uh, I'm 29, I'm a writer producer on The Simpsons. Everything should be good, but I think, no, I'm not where I'm supposed to be. Something is, else is supposed to happen.

• 42:48Speaker 02

  It feels weird.

• 42:49Conan O'Brien?

I just was, and I remembered my agent at the time saying, well, you could get an overall deal to be at The Simpsons for five more years. You could make, you know, but, and I was like, no, no, I can't. Take that because something's supposed to happen.

• 42:59Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 43:00Conan O'Brien?

One of the crazier things in show business happens, which is, uh, there's only like, there's, there's, David Letterman doesn't get the Tonight Show and he suddenly announces, I'm leaving, which no one thought he would do.

• 43:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:13Conan O'Brien?

And suddenly NBC doesn't have a late night show at 12:30. They don't know what to do. Cause this is back before the internet. So today they would look at 700.

• 43:22Speaker 02

  They would go TikTok.

• 43:23Conan O'Brien?

There'd be a million people who were viable and it'd be 900 hours of everybody.

• 43:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:29Conan O'Brien?

  But they don't have that.

• 43:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:31Conan O'Brien?

And these jobs back then, there weren't, there were two talk, late night talk shows. That's it.

• 43:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:38Conan O'Brien?

Um, or just at that point, it was just one or maybe two. And they're, uh, the main guy, David Letterman has left or is leaving, announces he's leaving soon in a couple of months.

• 43:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:50Conan O'Brien?

They don't know what to do. So NBC says, well, we gotta keep the affiliates in line. Let's just get Lorne Michaels to decide. And that calms everybody down. Like, oh, good. Lorne Michaels, Saturday Night Live. He'll just, he'll figure it out. Lorne goes looking. It's a long story, but cut, cut to him just in a room saying, there was this writer who worked for us, who's got something, uh, Conan O'Brien. And they're like, what? And I do an audition. I'm so loose in the audition because I think I'll never get this.

• 44:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 44:19Conan O'Brien?

And then one thing leads to another. They say, no, it's going to be Gary Shandling. It'll never be you. And then suddenly they go, ah, you know, it's him. And they call me, I'm in the basement of The Simpsons and they say, you're going to take over this massive job. There's no footage of you. Everything I'd ever done was on stage.

• 44:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 44:38Conan O'Brien?

There's nothing. I don't even have a headshot and everyone freaks out and that's what happened. That's a pretty common Saturn return.

• 44:49Conan O'Brien?

But you know, that was, um, that was how I, and, and that all happened, uh, the audition, everything happened when I was 29.

• 44:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 44:57Conan O'Brien?

And then I am waiting to hear back and I have my 30th birthday in my LA apartment on Weatherly. And then a couple of days after my 30th birthday.

• 45:06Speaker 02

  You get the call.

• 45:07Conan O'Brien?

  I get the call.

• 45:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:08Conan O'Brien?

  That your life's changed.

• 45:09Speaker 02

  Saturn return bitch.

• 45:10Speaker 01

  Saturn returned.

• 45:13Conan O'Brien?

  What was your Saturn return?

• 45:14Speaker 01

Working for you. Getting my job working for you.

• 45:16Conan O'Brien?

Were you, oh, that's right. You were in your late twenties.

• 45:18Speaker 01

I was 27, well, 26, and I turned 27. And that changed, that changed my life. I mean, working for you. It's been, it's been cool. It's been okay.

• 45:28Conan O'Brien?

  Wow. Ringing endorsement.

• 45:30Speaker 01

It really has. I mean, it's like, everything changed once that happened.

• 45:32Conan O'Brien?

  What about you, Matt?

• 45:33Speaker 05

Well, mine was, yeah, I went through a really bad breakup and just took a month off work and had the same lunch every day at this bar and went home and watched, got high and watched a James Bond movie.

• 45:48Conan O'Brien?

  You showed her.

• 45:48Speaker 01

  Yeah, that sounds real nice.

• 45:50Conan O'Brien?

Oh, she could see me now.

• 45:52Speaker 05

Well, I started thinking, I'm gonna read every Shakespeare play. And it was like, in two days, it was like, I'm just gonna watch every James Bond movie.

• 45:59Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 46:00Speaker 05

And that was, that for about a month.

• 46:02Conan O'Brien?

  I went through-

• 46:02Speaker 05

I look back on it so nostalgically now, though. It was a hard time, but now I'm really fond of it.

• 46:07Speaker 01

No, but it for, it shapes you.

• 46:09Conan O'Brien?

It shaped me. I went through a, I went through a bad breakup in New York that was prior to all this. And I remembered I got a Seamus Heaney poetry book.

• 46:19Speaker 05

  Oh, my God.

• 46:19Conan O'Brien?

I kept it in my back pocket and I would lie down on park benches in Manhattan and read from a poetry book. And I thought, this is who I am now. And then, three days later, I was like, I gotta get a job. And I went out to LA and worked on The Simpsons, but I, I remember thinking for a minute, this is who I am now. I'm a park bitch, 28-year-old who reads Seamus Heaney poetry.

• 46:44Speaker 01

  Lying down.

• 46:44Conan O'Brien?

  I'm a hobo!

• 46:45Speaker 05

You are. You're like a romantic hobo.

• 46:47Conan O'Brien?

  I'm a romantic hobo, yeah.

• 46:49Speaker 05

The saddest part was that the lunch I had every day was a, I went to an Irish pub and I had a corned beef sandwich, a deep-fried Snickers bar, and a Guinness. Every single day.

• 46:56Speaker 01

  Oh, my God!

• 46:57Speaker 05

  I know. I can't believe I'm alive.

• 46:58Speaker 01

  That's fabulous.

• 47:01Speaker 05

And that's why I stand before you the way I am here today.

• 47:05Speaker 02

  Incredible.

• 47:06Conan O'Brien?

Well, Rachel, it feels to me like you've had nine of these in your teens and twenties. Like you've had.

• 47:12Speaker 02

  Like mini ones.

• 47:13Conan O'Brien?

You well, mini ones, you've you've got a very big jump on a career at a very early age.

• 47:20Speaker 02

I don't know. I think a lot of people in my my age and younger feel like there have been a lot of like setbacks. Like it's like, like basically like Shiva Baby was so supposed to premiere at South by and then it was canceled because of COVID. And then I was like, oh, my God, my career is over because of COVID. Like, when is this gonna end? Whatever. Then we get back into the industry. We get to make Bottoms. Bottoms comes out during the strike. And like, there's, there's, I think, like.

• 47:45Conan O'Brien?

And you couldn't promote it during the strike?

• 47:46Speaker 02

Couldn't promote it during the strike.

• 47:47Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, I remember that. I remember that.

• 47:48Speaker 02

But the girls on TikTok did it for us, literally, literally shout out because I was like, they they took the movie and ran with it.

• 47:56Conan O'Brien?

  That's great.

• 47:57Speaker 02

And that was amazing. But I think like, I felt sort of a similar thing to you, which is like, basically like, I think you get the early twenties were really chaotic. I was like, I don't know what I'm doing. By the mid twenties, I was like, not The Simpsons, but you have your, you have your stuff where you feel like, okay, I've got my thing. I know what I'm doing. And then just all of a sudden, like, something feels wrong. And you're like, I don't know what it is. And you sort of like sit in something feeling wrong for like two years or a year, whether it be a relationship or being like, I'm not quite doing like, I'm doing what I want to be doing, but I'm not doing it all the way, or I need whatever.

• 48:39Speaker 02

And like, you have to make that leap. Like, I don't know if when you said, I'm not doing an overall deal at The Simpsons, your agent said, you're a fucking idiot.

• 48:46Conan O'Brien?

  He did say that.

• 48:47Speaker 02

Okay, awesome. And it's like, because you're like, I don't have the next job. I don't know what it is. I feel something. I, for me, like, I think it was like, the jump of. Of fully stepping into a creative role on my own. It's really scary. I think I've always felt insecure in myself as like a writer on my own. I just, in general, I feel like I'm like, I, I feel like I'm a good like pep talker, cheerleader. I get like, I get to do lists done, but I never really thought like I'm that talented. I, in, in general, I think I'm just like more of a hard worker than I am talented.

• 49:26Conan O'Brien?

But that's, you know that that's how everybody feels.

• 49:29Speaker 02

I think being hardworking is, is a good part of it, you know?

• 49:34Conan O'Brien?

No, but that's how I would have, I mean, everybody has that.

• 49:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:37Conan O'Brien?

  Not, I, I, I don't, that's just so common.

• 49:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:41Conan O'Brien?

That, um, you know, I, I always thought that, well, I get by because I work.

• 49:47Speaker 02

  Because I do my homework.

• 49:49Conan O'Brien?

I can outwork anybody and I do my homework.

• 49:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:51Conan O'Brien?

And then it was a long time and, and look, all, all these years later, I still have those days.

• 49:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:57Conan O'Brien?

We all have that. When you show me someone who is an artist of any kind and they have no insecurity and they have no doubt and they have no fear, I think I have no interest in seeing their art. None.

• 50:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 50:12Conan O'Brien?

  I just have none.

• 50:13Speaker 02

But it's, it's scary and it's like, there's a difference between being in someone else's thing and being a part of it and knowing like, well, if it doesn't go well, I can say, hey, I'm just the actor. Or like, I just did, I didn't, you know what I mean? Like,

• 50:28Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 50:28Speaker 02

I had no control. To step into a role where you're like, oh, if people hate this, they hate me. Like, not actually, but kind of. Like, I'm like, I, there's no, I'm like, it's like, my name, my name. I'm like, it's me, it's, I'm naked in it, I wrote it. I'm, they're like, it's very vulnerable. And so I like, while I was in the process of waiting to see if the show got picked up, I had like done the pilot, was waiting to see if the show got picked up.

• 50:57Conan O'Brien?

This is HBO, you're waiting to hear from HBO.

• 50:59Speaker 02

This is from HBO. And I am like, having to say no to other things. And it's really scary because I'm like, I don't know if the show is happening. I don't know if I'm good enough. I go through a breakup. I get arrested in the Cayman Islands. It's, that was my-

• 51:16Conan O'Brien?

Wait a minute, wait a minute.

• 51:18Speaker 02

And this all happened in one month.

• 51:20Conan O'Brien?

What happened in the Cayman Islands?

• 51:22Speaker 02

I brought, this is on me, but I brought a CBD joint in my back. It was, I didn't even do it on purpose. It was like, I had like, a leftover CBD joint that I bought in a grocery store. In like, the back of my purse. And then, they really search your bag. Like, they search your bag. She's like, taking out my vibrator. I'm like, girl, put that away, in the middle of the airport. Like, they search your bag. And she was like, do you have any drugs on you? And I was like, I do not have drugs on me. So then, like, I was like, like, why would I have drugs? But then I didn't know CBD was also illegal. So then she finds a CBD. So then I got in trouble for lying about the drugs.

• 51:59Speaker 05

The Cayman Islands is the hub of white collar crime and they bust you for a CBD joint?

• 52:03Speaker 02

Yes. And I was in, they took my phone away. Shout the fuck out Claire, my assistant who's out there. You met her. She thought I was kidnapped. So they take my phone and my passport. I'm in jail for like, five hours. Nothing. Claire thinks I've been kidnapped. Cause she's calling the hotel. She's like, has anyone seen Rachel? Some people at the hotel had seen me getting into an unmarked white van. So then Claire, which is how they take people to jail there.

• 52:28Speaker 06

  What the fuck?

• 52:29Speaker 02

And so then Claire's like, she's been kidnapped. So then Claire's like, calling the embassy, literally.

• 52:34Conan O'Brien?

This is a good assistant, cause Sona, in the same situation. If they said, uh, we've heard reports that Conan's gone. He's not at his hotel. He's been taken in a white van. You'd be like, alright, well let me know.

• 52:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:45Conan O'Brien?

Hit the clubs. I'm hitting the clubs.

• 52:48Speaker 02

I'll be like, is the joint okay?

• 52:52Conan O'Brien?

And tell me more about this joint.

• 52:53Speaker 02

Did they throw that away? Can they mail it back?

• 52:55Speaker 01

They should send that back to us.

• 52:57Conan O'Brien?

That's evidence. I might need to look at that.

• 52:59Speaker 02

  I should look at that.

• 53:00Speaker 01

Keep him, give me the joint.

• 53:01Speaker 02

Were you scared or were you pretty confident? I was scared. I think I was also just having a breakdown in my life where I was literally like, I don't have a show, I just turned down these other like jobs. I am like in the middle of a breakup with my boyfriend and now I'm in jail? I was like, wait a second. I was just like, I got really freaked out where I was like, I was crying in there and then I started telling the girl about my breakup. And it was just all, anyways. Claire called my lawyers and they knew a lawyer on the Cayman Islands who came and got me out of jail. So it was all fine. I just had to apologize on camera and get a mugshot and I do have a record there. It's okay.

• 53:44Conan O'Brien?

  I love it. I mean.

• 53:45Speaker 02

  I know I wanted.

• 53:46Conan O'Brien?

  It's badass.

• 53:46Speaker 02

It's badass. I wanted the picture so bad. I was like, please send me the mugshot. They did let me put on makeup for the mugshot, which was, I thought, really sweet. I was like, I've been traveling, I'm sweating. She was like, you can go into your bag for mascara. But that was all like in one month. And then I got back from the Cayman Islands and the show got picked up.

• 54:08Conan O'Brien?

  That's great.

• 54:08Speaker 02

And then it was my birthday, my 29th birthday. So mine maybe came a little earlier than yours, but now I just had my 30th birthday right before the show comes out. So it's very like, it feels like, I don't know, it feels like a very like mystical time where everything is like shifting and whatever. But I felt so out of control that whole time. And I was like, I don't know why, I just feel like I have to trust.

• 54:35Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 54:35Speaker 02

But it's that same thing where it's like, you don't know.

• 54:37Conan O'Brien?

Well, here's what I'll tell you. I am very confident that people are gonna love your show. I am. And, um, cause I know youth culture. No, no, I.

• 54:48Speaker 01

  More Dick Van Dyke references.

• 54:50Conan O'Brien?

It's really well done. It's, your show is really well done. I am confident that people are gonna really like this show, cause I was binge watching it and, uh, and really impressed. And I think you're very impressive. I thought so when we got to talk and I met you. And I'm a huge fan. And I'm just excited to do, to see all the things you're gonna do. I really am. So just, we're gonna wrap it up. Because I want to let you go and make more cool things. But I'm a cheerleader. I'm an old doddering cheerleader on the side.

• 55:24Speaker 02

  I love it.

• 55:24Conan O'Brien?

And I'm really happy for you.

• 55:26Speaker 02

I'm, that really means a lot. And especially you watching all in a row means a lot to me. Because I know you've seen, I'm like, you thinking it's funny means a lot. Because you're the funniest, so.

• 55:39Conan O'Brien?

  Oh, that's sweet. Thank you.

• 55:41Speaker 02

Yeah, I thought I'd bring it sincere at the end.

• 55:43Conan O'Brien?

  All right.

• 55:44Speaker 02

Thank you so much for having me.

• 55:46Conan O'Brien?

  This is amazing.

• 55:46Speaker 02

  This was so fun.

• 55:47Conan O'Brien?

Thank you so much for doing it. This was great. This was great. And you came in and hugged everybody. And I've never touched these people. He won't even look us in the eye. I haven't met you till today. It's nice to see you. We'll talk.

• 56:06Conan O'Brien?

You know, winning an award, that's a big achievement, right?

• 56:08Speaker 02

  Yeah, I love awards.

• 56:09Conan O'Brien?

Every now and then in life, maybe something nice like that comes your way. Winning them consistently is almost impossible. It just doesn't happen. You know? Well, guess what? Winning five times in six years? You know what that sounds like to me? Sustained excellence.

• 56:23Speaker 02

• 57:31Conan O'Brien?

Did you know that one in four Americans targeted by scams end up falling for them?

• 57:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 57:35Conan O'Brien?

  You fell for one.

• 57:36Speaker 01

  I fell for a scam.

• 57:37Conan O'Brien?

Now, you didn't lose too much money, but you did lose.

• 57:40Speaker 01

I did lose, and it was very inconvenient. And now they put protections on my account like I'm, uh, dumb.

• 57:45Conan O'Brien?

Yeah. I don't know where they got that impression. Criminals are now using AI to make scams look more realistic than ever. In 2025, AI fraud spiked 1,210% and cost Americans $893 million. That's incredible. Well, with AI, it can get so smart now.

• 58:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 58:06Conan O'Brien?

Do you know what I mean?

• 58:07Speaker 01

  Maybe I should start scamming.

• 58:08Conan O'Brien?

  No, that's not the point.

• 59:35Conan O'Brien?

  Hey Sona, quick question.

• 59:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:37Conan O'Brien?

You were talking about something that intrigued me when I entered the room, and then you quickly changed the topic. I got the sense that you are babysitting even though you have twin four-year-old boys who take up a lot of your time. Why are you taking on a babysitting gig? What's going on?

• 59:52Speaker 01

My friend has a baby who's about nine months old, almost nine months old, and they just need somebody for just a couple hours every week.

• 1:00:01Conan O'Brien?

What are you doing this for?

• 1:00:02Speaker 01

  For funsies.

• 1:00:03Conan O'Brien?

  No.

• 1:00:03Speaker 01

  Can I tell you something?

• 1:00:04Conan O'Brien?

No, you don't get to talk on this podcast.

• 1:00:06Speaker 01

  Okay, all right.

• 1:00:07Conan O'Brien?

  This is a podcast where-

• 1:00:08Speaker 01

  You ask me questions.

• 1:00:09Conan O'Brien?

  White men bloviate.

• 1:00:12Speaker 05

You be quiet, I'll handle this.

• 1:00:13Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah. Yeah, you take over.

• 1:00:16Speaker 05

  Thank you.

• 1:00:16Conan O'Brien?

I'm gonna pass the ball over to the other white guy. Listen.

• 1:00:19Speaker 05

  Star Wars.

• 1:00:21Conan O'Brien?

  Here's what I don't understand. I don't understand, you have twin boys.

• 1:00:25Speaker 01

  Yes, I do.

• 1:00:26Conan O'Brien?

And Mikey and Charlie. And they are a hand fill.

• 1:00:30Speaker 01

  Sure are.

• 1:00:30Speaker 05

  Excuse me?

• 1:00:31Speaker 01

  Did you say had fill?

• 1:00:33Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:33Speaker 01

  Had full?

• 1:00:34Conan O'Brien?

No, hand fill. I changed it.

• 1:00:37Speaker 05

It's when you ba- Never mind.

• 1:00:39Speaker 01

What were you gonna say? Hand fill?

• 1:00:42Conan O'Brien?

  What are you doing?

• 1:00:43Speaker 01

What are you doing? What are you doing?

• 1:00:44Conan O'Brien?

What is your fucking problem? What are you talking about?

• 1:00:46Speaker 01

  What the fuck, Matt?

• 1:00:47Conan O'Brien?

  What are you talking about?

• 1:00:47Speaker 01

  What are you talking about?

• 1:00:48Conan O'Brien?

Were you gonna say something really inappropriate?

• 1:00:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:00:50Speaker 05

  No, it's all coming out.

• 1:00:53Speaker 01

  It's all coming out?

• 1:00:54Conan O'Brien?

  What?

• 1:00:54Speaker 05

  Is it your Robocop sensor?

• 1:00:55Speaker 01

  What's coming out?

• 1:00:56Speaker 05

I mean, I'm editing it out.

• 1:00:57Conan O'Brien?

No, you're not gonna edit. Oh, oh, so if I make a mistake, it stays in?

• 1:01:02Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:01:02Conan O'Brien?

  And if you become-

• 1:01:03Speaker 05

Yes, that's the only thing I have in my life is that.

• 1:01:08Conan O'Brien?

I don't know what he's talking about. What I'm saying, I misspoke slightly and said hand fill instead of hand full.

• 1:01:14Speaker 01

Yeah, we both made fun of you. It was fun, we had a good time.

• 1:01:17Conan O'Brien?

Isn't it funny that Conan's bleeding into his brain?

• 1:01:19Speaker 01

  Come on!

• 1:01:20Conan O'Brien?

So, as he ages, he's falling apart. Ha ha. But, that's not what we're gonna talk about. You have twin boys who are very young. How old are they? Three?

• 1:01:30Speaker 01

  They're four.

• 1:01:30Conan O'Brien?

  Four? Still, that's very young.

• 1:01:34Speaker 01

  Yeah, they are.

• 1:01:35Conan O'Brien?

And then you took on, you were like, hey, throw that nine month old my way.

• 1:01:39Speaker 01

Well, so here's the thing. My kids go to school and then, you know, I'm working on my second book, but that's really all I've got going on if I'm not here.

• 1:01:47Conan O'Brien?

Just to get more material? And then, chapter 15.

• 1:01:49Speaker 01

  No, but here-

• 1:01:50Conan O'Brien?

I got a nine month old.

• 1:01:51Speaker 01

I, I have to say, I had twins and we were really in it. And now I'm watching one baby and it's not that hard. Like, babies, they eat and they like, you go, you go for a walk and then they sleep and then you play and it's fun.

• 1:02:05Conan O'Brien?

So you're shaming anyone out there who's having a hard time with one child, son of obsession?

• 1:02:10Speaker 01

I'm just saying, if you've had two, one after having twins is more manageable.

• 1:02:16Conan O'Brien?

Okay, so why don't you tell Matt?

• 1:02:18Speaker 01

  Why are you complaining?

• 1:02:22Conan O'Brien?

  I'm not complaining.

• 1:02:23Speaker 01

  No, I know.

• 1:02:23Conan O'Brien?

  I, I agree.

• 1:02:24Speaker 01

It's fun. It's so much fun to watch a baby.

• 1:02:26Conan O'Brien?

  Are you getting paid?

• 1:02:27Speaker 01

No, of course not. They're my friends.

• 1:02:29Conan O'Brien?

Do anything and not demand your share?

• 1:02:31Speaker 01

I don't do anything. I, I mean, no, not at, I, I'm having fun doing it. I like hanging out with this kid. He's a really fun baby. He's really sweet. He has a little bit of separation anxiety, which is tough. And then, you know, we're just, we're just chilling. Me and this baby like hang out.

• 1:02:46Conan O'Brien?

Be honest, when the baby's melting down and you, you're not happy with the gig?

• 1:02:51Speaker 01

No, I don't. I'm being serious. I don't. And I like it. And I, you know what? Maybe I'll be a nanny now. Maybe this is it for me. Maybe I'm gonna quit this job and nanny.

• 1:03:01Conan O'Brien?

Leave this job and be a nanny? I'm not hearing a no. Was this a resignation? I'm not hearing a no. You got something she could sign?

• 1:03:06Speaker 01

I basically babysat you for 12 years.

• 1:03:09Conan O'Brien?

Wah, you did not, wah. I was a very emotionally mature adult. Wow. Even as I said it, my jaw felt, started to rot off. I, uh, I agree with you that, um, you did babysit me. And I, and sometimes, it was incredibly immature, I suppose. You have to coddle a genius.

• 1:03:35Speaker 01

Okay. What do you mean? You don't have to coddle, do you?

• 1:03:38Conan O'Brien?

  Yes.

• 1:03:39Speaker 01

  Okay, I don't know. You're saying you're a genius.

• 1:03:42Conan O'Brien?

What part of that sentence did you not understand? Do I stutter?

• 1:03:48Conan O'Brien?

  No, whatever.

• 1:03:48Speaker 01

  Hand fill.

• 1:03:49Conan O'Brien?

  Excuse me?

• 1:03:50Speaker 05

  Yes!

• 1:03:51Conan O'Brien?

Hand fill. That's a genius way of saying handful. I don't like to say the things that everyone says. I like to invent new ways of communicating. I think you're a real hand fill. You've filled my hand with your problems. It's, mine is, it just cuts through. I guess Joyce used a lot of language that people didn't understand.

• 1:04:08Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:04:10Conan O'Brien?

Yeah. I meant Joyce Cole Haywick. She was a broadcaster in Boston.

• 1:04:14Speaker 01

Do you know who he's talking about?

• 1:04:16Conan O'Brien?

  You laughed really hard.

• 1:04:17Speaker 01

  Yeah, he laughed so hard.

• 1:04:18Conan O'Brien?

I'm twisting because he was talking about James Joyce and then he twisted it. Hey, you really enjoy my humor.

• 1:04:23Speaker 01

I thought you knew who Joyce Cole Haywick is.

• 1:04:25Conan O'Brien?

By the way, if you grew up in the Boston area, shout out to Joyce Cole Haywick.

• 1:04:28Speaker 01

  Shout out!

• 1:04:29Conan O'Brien?

Shout out to Joyce Cole Haywick! Shoot the noob! Shoot the noob with Joyce Cole Haywick! He's nuts! She was a big star when I was growing up in, uh, in Boston.

• 1:04:37Speaker 01

  In local news?

• 1:04:38Conan O'Brien?

Yeah. Oh, I had no idea who she was.

• 1:04:40Speaker 01

  Oh, okay.

• 1:04:41Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:42Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:04:42Conan O'Brien?

Okay, we just lost all of everyone.

• 1:04:44Speaker 01

You took us down a comedy cul-de-sac.

• 1:04:46Conan O'Brien?

Nope, I'm checking right now and our... You took us down a comedy hand fill. Whoa, look at this. Our numbers in Roxbury, Massachusetts have just gone through the roof.

• 1:04:55Speaker 01

  Alright.

• 1:04:56Conan O'Brien?

Doesn't go out live. I just want to say that I'm very happy that you're looking after this nine-month-old.

• 1:05:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:05:01Conan O'Brien?

And, uh, it sounds like a win-win for you.

• 1:05:03Speaker 01

  So much fun.

• 1:05:04Conan O'Brien?

For you, a win-win-win. For you, the mom, and the baby.

• 1:05:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:05:08Conan O'Brien?

You know, because you're a wonderful person.

• 1:05:11Speaker 01

  I don't like this.

• 1:05:11Conan O'Brien?

Why can't you ever just accept when I'm nice to you? Call his bluff, call his bluff.

• 1:05:15Speaker 01

I, I've worked for you for so long. You've never just been purely sincere.

• 1:05:19Conan O'Brien?

That's not true. I have been sincere before, haven't you heard it?

• 1:05:22Speaker 01

  Very rarely.

• 1:05:22Conan O'Brien?

  I've seen it. Yeah.

• 1:05:23Speaker 01

Because you're always nice to Eduardo.

• 1:05:25Conan O'Brien?

No, I've seen him be sincere to you. Yes, thank you, Eduardo. Thank you, when I've told you... I've never seen it.

• 1:05:30Speaker 05

We always, we always cut it out.

• 1:05:33Conan O'Brien?

He calls me later and he insists that I cut it out.

• 1:05:35Speaker 01

  Take it out.

• 1:05:36Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:37Speaker 01

I'm just saying, sometimes when you say something nice, I hold my breath and I wait for what's next.

• 1:05:41Conan O'Brien?

  You shouldn't wait.

• 1:05:42Speaker 01

Because there's always a joke after.

• 1:05:44Conan O'Brien?

Let's do it. Will you say that nice thing again and see if you can just let him sit in it? Okay, go ahead. I think that you'd be a great nanny. And I think that's a lucky nine-month-old and a lucky mom that's tricked you. Into working for free.

• 1:05:58Speaker 01

  I know your face.

• 1:05:59Conan O'Brien?

  Oh, you know my face?

• 1:06:00Speaker 01

Yeah, I know your face. You're not doing, no, that's not, oh, that's the worst! That's the worst!

• 1:06:07Conan O'Brien?

  No, I'm being sincere.

• 1:06:09Speaker 01

  That's the worst.

• 1:06:10Conan O'Brien?

  Where's my camera? Right here.

• 1:06:11Speaker 01

I know when you're being sincere. Your face is not.

• 1:06:14Conan O'Brien?

Sona, you mean a great deal to me.

• 1:06:16Speaker 01

  Ah!

• 1:06:17Conan O'Brien?

I really respect you. You've been a great friend and I trust you. I trust you more than I trust anyone.

• 1:06:24Speaker 05

My gosh, who do you look like?

• 1:06:26Conan O'Brien?

I look like someone who just drank sour milk.

• 1:06:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:06:29Conan O'Brien?

I look like an emoji that just drank sour milk. Uh, God bless you, Sona.

• 1:06:32Speaker 01

  Yeah, I'm having fun.

• 1:06:33Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, and I think it's a great idea for you to leave this very lucrative gig and go nanny for free.

• 1:06:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:06:40Speaker 07
