• 1:48Keke Palmer?

  You too slick.

• 1:49Speaker 01

That boy know how to do it.

• 1:50Keke Palmer?

Now, y'all know we do the pre-show, the pre-show questionnaire. So, let me see what you, what you- I gotta get into this chicken scratch.

• 1:56Speaker 01

I write like a doctor. That's how you know who creative, is possible creative geniuses are, because their handwriting is terrible.

• 2:03Keke Palmer?

Yeah, you definitely up there. So, today, I'm giving dopeness with a side of goodness. That feels good.

• 2:11Speaker 01

But, but, read more, because I'm sprinkling what?

• 2:13Keke Palmer?

You're sprinkling what? Today's mood is- A bit of I don't give a [BLEEP]ness would sprinkle on top.

• 2:20Speaker 01

  Sprinkled on top.

• 2:21Keke Palmer?

  I love that.

• 2:21Speaker 01

That's how I sprinkle that I don't give a [BLEEP]ness on top of dopeness and goodness. But you gotta sprinkle some I'm a don't give a [BLEEP]ness because there's some judgmental [BLEEP] nowadays. Can I curse on your podcast?

• 2:32Keke Palmer?

  You can curse.

• 2:33Speaker 01

Oh, I thought you were still on Disney. I was like, I don't want to disrespect your Nickelodeon deal, but.

• 2:37Keke Palmer?

We still love your [BLEEP] Nickelodeon money.

• 2:39Speaker 01

  Hey.

• 2:39Keke Palmer?

  But yeah, you know.

• 2:40Speaker 01

  Get all that money.

• 2:41Keke Palmer?

  This is Amazon.

• 2:41Speaker 01

  Hey.

• 2:42Keke Palmer?

  Amazon's open.

• 2:43Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:44Keke Palmer?

  Amazon's open.

• 2:45Speaker 01

  Oh, get that Bezos check.

• 2:46Keke Palmer?

Now, wait a minute. It says, what did you listen to on the right here? My thoughts, my own insanity.

• 2:52Speaker 01

Yeah, I don't listen to a lot of music because.

• 2:55Keke Palmer?

You don't listen to music? That's kind of a new thing to hear you say. I never knew that.

• 2:59Speaker 01

Because it's a distraction. I need to hear my thoughts. I'm looking for clarity. I'm looking for God. And so when I go walk, I like to listen to books. I want to think and grow rich. I'm thinking about, you know, legacy. I'm thinking about branding. I have so many things in my head. I'm thinking about sets that I don't want to listen to other people's material because I don't want to search out for my material. I need to search inward. If I want great material, I gotta talk, think about my pain. I gotta think about my trauma. I gotta think about the trauma I've given others. And I gotta think, how do I make that and transpose that into hilarity? And if I'm listening to music, then I'm listening to somebody else's art. And I'd rather just create mine through God and silence.

• 3:42Keke Palmer?

I'm not mad at that because sometimes if you're not insular enough, that you don't know what's your idea or what's someone else's idea. Obviously, we're all inspired by ideas, but you know what I'm saying? I was just talking to a friend about that where I was sharing something. And I was like, let me pull back for a second real quick because I haven't really formulated it completely with myself. So before you start add [BLEEP] on top of it, let me go back to the drawing board. Because I don't want you to ingest my mind when I haven't really fully closed it out. So I absolutely understand.

• 4:10Speaker 01

Let me finish my thought. But you know what? I don't watch a lot of TV anymore.

• 4:14Keke Palmer?

When did that stop, you think?

• 4:15Speaker 01

My mind is the TV. I'd stop when I said, I don't, I know enough about the world and about people that I need to really figure me out. And I need to talk to God, because he's the source, and my therapist, because that's the other source. And I need to figure out how I can take myself and be a prism to infect the world with whatever lessons and drama and trauma I've been through, and give them laughter. So that's what I do.

• 4:41Keke Palmer?

And I know with most of your material, a lot of times you do talk about your family and stuff like that. But when it comes to pop culture, or like just conversational stuff that's happening in the culture and society, do you just get it from social media? If you're gonna get into some news or something happening with the day?

• 4:56Speaker 01

  It's too easy.

• 4:57Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 4:58Speaker 01

It's too easy for me to look at a newspaper and go, okay, Nick, what did Trump do today? You know what I mean? Is slavery back or what?

• 5:08Speaker 01

  You know what I mean?

• 5:09Keke Palmer?

Is slavery back or what? Literally, or what? Like, when is it, like?

• 5:13Speaker 01

And when we do, do we get a day off? You know what I mean? Like, you don't know. It's too easy for me to look at the newspaper, for me to look at, you know, pop culture, music, you know what I mean? What did Kanye, what did his crazy ass say today? It's too easy. What did I go through that hurt me? That I can go, what's funny about this? How can I rescue myself and others? I lost my parents, I lost my mother and my father. And it's okay, but...

• 5:41Keke Palmer?

But it's terrible, I'm sorry about that. I mean, we all will lose at some point, but it's terrible. I'm sorry that you lost.

• 5:46Speaker 01

  You got yours, right?

• 5:48Keke Palmer?

  Thank, yes.

• 5:48Speaker 01

Oh, yeah, boy. Call me in forty years when they go, boy, I'm right here, baby girl.

• 5:53Keke Palmer?

Forty years, how old? I'll be eighty? No, I'm not forty yet, I'll be seventy?

• 5:58Speaker 01

  You're forty?

• 5:58Keke Palmer?

  No, I'm not, I'm thirty-two.

• 6:00Speaker 01

  You're...

• 6:01Keke Palmer?

But I mean, that feels forty.

• 6:03Speaker 01

No, but you, you look like a baby. You still look like you on Disney.

• 6:06Keke Palmer?

But you know, I've been working so many years... Both. You know how to get every check I could find?

• 6:10Speaker 01

She got two monies, damn, you was competing against yourself.

• 6:13Keke Palmer?

Literally betting against me. We got Jumpin' over here, we got Rags and True Jackson, yeah.

• 6:19Speaker 01

  Good.

• 6:20Keke Palmer?

  But yeah.

• 6:21Speaker 01

Losing your parents really give you some real self-discovery because there's a lot of healing involved in that kind of grieving process. And I learned when I did this, I did a special called Good Grief about my parents' passing and how I got through it. That was to me my best work because I think comedy is the layers of an onion. And until you get to the place where you take the things that make you cry, you're in the center of that onion, the things that make you cry, and you find joy and humor in that, and then other people, when they go through it, they're like, thank you for that. Because now you become like a biblical story, right?

• 6:57Keke Palmer?

There's something that I have to talk to you about that I've been, I don't want to say struggling with, but I've been tampering with in my mind. As somebody who, initially when I came into the industry, it wasn't like I was like, I'm a comedian or something like that, but I always use performance and entertainment as a form of survival, as a form of coping. Like it just was in my household, you know, what I saw, what, you know, the, the, the fact that my parents weren't always able to be emotionally available, what they were dealing with, the stress of my dad getting up and going to work in a factory and just all of that. I've transported that into my humor and my jokes and I'll be the relief. But now, at 32, I feel something changing in me where it's like, well, what, what if it's not just for that? Do you get what I'm saying?

• 7:42Keke Palmer?

Where it's like, if the only way that I get into this space, is it in this place of service and is it in this place of always taking something from my pain?

• 7:53Speaker 01

  Well, there's-

• 7:53Keke Palmer?

It's both, I love it, but then also it's, you get what I'm saying?

• 7:56Speaker 01

There's layers to it, right? So, it's easy when you're younger, your first material, your first thing, you can pull from your parents because that's your first loves. That's your first bit of trauma that you're gonna get from people is from your parents, unfortunately. And there's no perfect parenting. As much as your parents try to offer you the best life, they're gonna make mistakes. Why did you send me to private school? I would, I would've learned how to fuck- Right early if I'd have sent you to public school. These are the things that my kids are saying like, what are you talking about?

• 8:23Keke Palmer?

  That's too funny.

• 8:24Speaker 01

And but then when you get older and you start experiencing your trauma and you have a baby. And then you have to deal with a relationship and now you're your mother.

• 8:33Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 8:34Speaker 01

And now you're going, how do I take and rescue my mom from through myself? What am I not gonna take that she took? Where am I gonna or what am I gonna learn that my mother tried to teach me that? Oh, in this moment, I should behave this way.

• 8:48Keke Palmer?

And how else can I deal with my trauma outside of performing?

• 8:52Speaker 01

  That's what.

• 8:53Keke Palmer?

  That's a tough one.

• 8:55Speaker 01

No, but that's the gift and that's why you're so talented. Because you you have absolute ADHD. I know for a fact. Two of us together, we need Ritalin, bro, like.

• 9:06Keke Palmer?

  We're the add itself.

• 9:08Speaker 01

We it's crazy. We are. Whatever drug, what is that? What's the what's the drug? ADHD drug? What's that?

• 9:14Keke Palmer?

  Ritalin. We're the add.

• 9:15Speaker 01

What's the other? It's Ritalin and something else.

• 9:17Keke Palmer?

  Adderall.

• 9:18Speaker 01

Oh, man, we need to do it. Nigga, we need to do a whole sponsorship.

• 9:22Keke Palmer?

  Cause it's up.

• 9:22Speaker 01

Today's podcast is brought to you by Ritalin.

• 9:26Keke Palmer?

But we'll be like this. Woo, today's podcast.

• 9:32Speaker 01

Focus, man. But but yes, I mean, that's a gift. And that you learn that you take your pain or you take your love or you take your hurt or whatever you take. And it could be goodness, too. See, when I was younger, I was silly. My my comedy was different. It was like Marlon too silly.

• 9:49Keke Palmer?

  Oh, no.

• 9:50Speaker 01

  No.

• 9:50Keke Palmer?

Always my favorite. I love all the Wayans brothers, but you, no.

• 9:54Speaker 01

That's cause I was close to see your age. He was like, mm.

• 9:57Keke Palmer?

  No, Marlon.

• 9:58Speaker 01

Oh, I can't have a crush on homie to clown.

• 10:00Keke Palmer?

By the way, I I did hear. So you've always been the finest, funniest, my favorite Wayans. I'm just, that's the facts.

• 10:06Speaker 01

  Sean is definitely the finest.

• 10:07Keke Palmer?

But why do people always say, no?

• 10:09Speaker 01

  He is.

• 10:09Keke Palmer?

He was not. He just had some abs.

• 10:11Speaker 01

I'd be like, Marlon make me laugh, but I'm Sean.

• 10:15Keke Palmer?

But I heard that Damon is the one stealing people's girls. Like, what is this?

• 10:19Speaker 01

  You were watching TMZ.

• 10:23Speaker 01

No, Damon, no, TMZ asked me, because Damon had dated one of, uh, a girl that my nephew had dated, and you know, he actually fell in love. It was one girl that Craig was talking to, but he wasn't in love with her. Damon actually fell in love. And then TMZ asked me, and in my family, there's no drama. And anytime you come to me with drama, I'm gonna answer with comedy. So they asked me, what do you think about Damon stealing your nephew's girl? I said, that's just Damon. All he do is steal people's girlfriends. You gotta stop stealing girlfriends, Damon. You stole my girlfriend, you stole Keenan's girlfriend, you stole Damon's girl. Damon is Damon. You steal everybody's girlfriend, your kid's girlfriend. Damon, stop doing that. And I do that to be funny. Damon don't really sit

• 11:07Speaker 01

around. He's actually the opposite. Damon, Damon been super religious a long time. So we be in clubs.

• 11:13Keke Palmer?

  Wow.

• 11:13Speaker 01

And just when I'm about to, like, land, close a deal, here come Damon. Can I talk to you for a second? And he's Jehovah Witness. So he talks to the girl about God. And I'm like, I'm trying to close this deal right about now.

• 11:27Keke Palmer?

He's trying to close the church deal.

• 11:28Speaker 01

Do you think Jehovah would really respect you if you went home with this [BLEEP]? And by the end, it was like, I'm good. It's Saturday night. I'm going to Kingdom Hall Sunday, but thank you, Marlon. He was turning them out, was sending them home with watchtowers. But that's Damon. Damon is, uh, not like that dude. Damon's actually always been, and all of us, were solid men. I, we, my parents, my mother, my father, and we've always had God have raised us to be solid men.

• 11:55Keke Palmer?

What is it like at the barbecue? Who's on the grill? Who's talking? Who's quiet? Because again, as performers, everybody think everybody's always performing all the time. But that ain't how it is. A lot of times, I'm one in my family that's quiet when we all get together. So at the Wayne's house, who's who? What's what?

• 12:12Speaker 01

Uh, right now, the [BLEEP] is old. So I'm the, I'm the everything. I'm cooking, I'm talking, I'm cracking the jokes. I'm the uncle that's putting too much gas on the fire. I'm serving people. Um, but you know, when we sit down at the table, it's all fun. We just pass the baton, and we just enjoy each other's company. And everybody in my family, my nieces, my nephew, my kids, everybody in our family is funny. And even though we're all funny, we all have our inside jokes about each other.

• 12:42Keke Palmer?

  Yes!

• 12:43Speaker 01

And that, that's the fun part. And then don't let company come over, because, and don't let something be wrong, because we go. We got our, we got our Wayans code. It's like a, uh, you ever see a, um, a baseball team? And the coach is telling you to steal base? And, you know, they don't do that. They just pinch their ear and they communicate. That's how we communicate. That mean, look at the toes, look at the toes.

• 13:06Keke Palmer?

  Huh, hilarious.

• 13:08Speaker 01

Oh, I'm speaking of Wayans, I wanna give you something.

• 13:11Keke Palmer?

  Wait a minute.

• 13:12Speaker 01

No, I bought something for you.

• 13:13Keke Palmer?

  I love gifts.

• 13:14Speaker 01

I know, but listen, it's not that fly. I didn't put tissue in the gifts, but it's nice. But, you know, I wanted to bring you some, some of this on my, from my website. Cause that's official, cause you're official Wayans family.

• 13:25Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 13:26Speaker 01

So I wanna bring you an official Wayans Brothers shirt and a hoodie, just in case you get cold. And then I bought you this truck.

• 13:33Keke Palmer?

  Marlin.

• 13:34Speaker 01

So, you know, that's on my website, at marlinwayans.com. And as you see.

• 13:38Keke Palmer?

  We're brothers.

• 13:39Speaker 01

We're happy and we're singing and we're colored. Dun dun dun dun. Give me a high five.

• 13:45Keke Palmer?

Cut the ****. Dun dun dun. Yes. You know, I know.

• 13:50Speaker 01

Well, here, you don't have to hold that.

• 13:51Keke Palmer?

  Thank you so much.

• 13:52Speaker 01

I just wanted to gift that to you.

• 13:54Keke Palmer?

Thank you. And you know, I just bought the whole Living Colors set. They had it on Amazon Prime. I bought the whole season set.

• 14:00Speaker 01

  I'll watch it with you.

• 14:01Keke Palmer?

  You have to. I mean.

• 14:03Speaker 01

I, no, we should sit down and watch it. You know what I wanna do one day? We should do like a dope sketch show. I think that'd be fun. We would have so much fun.

• 14:10Keke Palmer?

Marlin, all you have to do is say the word. And I'm there. I need to ask you this because this, first of all, you know, I grew up on, don't be a menace. I'm gonna get you sucker. I mean, everything that you and your family have done. Because not only was it funny, but you guys were saying things within it. And this is something that I feel and I need to ask you what you think about that's missing with satire. First of all, we don't really have satire imperies anymore. And if we do, they're so surface and it's just a bunch of blanket jokes. They don't really connect to anything real. It's not connected to a true message. Like even when you think about don't be a menace to South Central.

• 14:48Speaker 01

  Message.

• 14:48Keke Palmer?

Message. It's like you guys were also saying stuff in it to the community.

• 14:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 14:54Keke Palmer?

About our representation in media, even when you go all the way back to Hollywood Shuffle.

• 14:59Speaker 01

  Right.

• 15:00Keke Palmer?

So I gotta, what has happened to the art of satire?

• 15:04Speaker 01

I don't think nothing, anything's happened to the art of satire except for social media. I think has come along and has spit out a narrative that people don't laugh no more. And, you know, it's not true that you can't make fun of each other no more. Those are bots from other countries that hate the fact that our United States of America was getting along, learning to laugh and at each other's differences. And they wanted to put a kibosh on that and they did. And then the media picks up social media because they've been very lazy. So they basically send the programming out to the executives. And the executives say, hey, you can't say this. And they tell the artists and then we don't have a point of view anymore. But that's why me and my brothers joined back to Scary Movie Six.

• 15:46Speaker 01

Because we feel like it's time for people to get in the movie theaters and laugh again. And what your movie proved, you and Issa Rae's movie.

• 15:53Keke Palmer?

  Um, thank you.

• 15:53Speaker 01

  You know, congratulations.

• 15:55Keke Palmer?

  Thank you.

• 15:56Speaker 01

Because people want to laugh. Who are you to tell us that we, people don't want to laugh? I'm on stage every weekend. You can't, you can't say that. No, you can't say that. I could say, you can't do white chicks nowadays. No, you can't. I can. We did the first one. You don't think I know how to make the second one? That's why I stay on stage because I want to be a scientist when it comes to the art of comedy. Don't tell me how I, that I can't say it. Tell me how I can. And so I don't think it's the audience. I think it's the narrative that social media has put out there to the media that's infected the executives. And now everybody's so scared to spend their money. But I think for artists like you and I, we go, that's a good thing. Because, you know, now, trust me with the joke, I know how to do this.

• 16:39Speaker 01

Trust me with these stories. I know how to infect my people with my story and bring in the new audience as well.

• 16:45Keke Palmer?

And the saddest part about it is when we don't approach it from that lens, we don't get the opportunity for comedy to do what it really is supposed to do, which is it's the medicine. For the conversations that we want to have. Even if I go all the way back to Norman Lear and we think about the Jeffersons. You know what I mean? Or All in the Family, like, those conversations were so racially charged, but there was humor in comedy.

• 17:03Speaker 01

But what's crazy is now they try and act like racism don't exist. People are acting like what's happening within our government, like, oh, it's all good. There was a time we used to protest. There was a time that we wouldn't stand for the. This is a generation of people that just talk on social media, but they're not willing to be present. Right? And so you have all these, all the heroes that we had from the Harry Belafontes to the Sidney Poitiers, to the Muhammad Ali's, to the, they was a generation full of black men that were a voice for us. Who's the voices now? Nobody wanna say nothing. They just wanna let all this happen.

• 17:38Keke Palmer?

I think we do have voices, but when they, sometimes it gets to the point where, and I can even say for myself, sometimes there's apathy that ends up coming across because people.

• 17:46Speaker 01

Don't use big words with me, says, hell, you mean, I didn't come up here to use it to songs. What, what's happened to that?

• 17:51Keke Palmer?

I thought you were a doctor, according to your handwriting.

• 17:53Speaker 01

Well, that's my handwriting. I cut a lot of, that's just a nigga that cut class. I cut handwriting classes in English class. What's apathy? That's like sympathies, brother. Right?

• 18:02Keke Palmer?

  Apathy, you get tired.

• 18:03Speaker 01

Yeah, apathy like, yeah. I'm feeling real apathetic right now.

• 18:10Keke Palmer?

Okay, lobe dog. You get apathetic where you really feel like, you know, you don't know where it's going. But obviously, for me, in my specific thing as an artist, I'm sure you feel the same way. I do what I can through my work. That's my, that's, that's my voice. That's, you know, I show it, I share it. This is how I feel. This is, I wanna bring laughter, I wanna bring joy, I wanna bring perspective. But I do think it does get to the point where sometimes people don't know what, what, what their lane of that sense of refuge is.

• 18:34Speaker 01

Because we are untethered from ourselves and from our community and from God. We live in a godless generation. Like, they're not really, you know, the youth ain't really talking about that. Like, you know, my parents, you know, they were strict. They, they took care of us. They, nah, they had, play on the phone at two years old. You know, it's like, you know, I think the reality of it is, you know, we have to have a voice and lend our voice to that. In the nineties, what me and my brothers was trying to do, we were being rebellious. We was trying to do what they did in the sixties, the seventies and the eighties, and we just picked up the baton. Like, yo, we still have stories to tell. Yo, there are still a lot of, of that's going on in our communities.

• 19:18Speaker 01

Yeah, we have more jobs, but there's more jobs that need to be created. What about ownership? You know, so.

• 19:24Keke Palmer?

Yeah, ownership was big, what you got. I mean, what you guys did, you created in terms of ownership, changed the game entirely. And even what you continue to speak about with, with Scary Movie and what that taught you. I remember when we sat down and you told me about that and spoke to the business, to me on that. I mean, how do we recreate a space, especially community and culturally, for us to collab in that way again?

• 19:47Speaker 01

Hey, man, I had a movie, right? I was like, yo, Kiki, I got this movie. I'm gonna send you the script. All right, bet, I'm, I love your work, you know? You read the script. All right, let's sit down, let's go to dinner. Come on as one of the producers. Let's go do this together.

• 20:01Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 20:02Speaker 01

Right? And that's how you make things happen. By the way, we're working on a movie, uh, together, don't, well, it can't announce it yet, but, yeah.

• 20:08Keke Palmer?

  But we know.

• 20:09Speaker 01

We doing it, we doing it. But, um.

• 20:11Keke Palmer?

  And it's real.

• 20:11Speaker 01

But it comes here, right? It's not being afraid to reach out, not being afraid to talk. And we gotta talk collectively. What are the agendas? What are we missing out on?

• 20:19Keke Palmer?

And even what you just said too about like, whatever your religion is, or your background is, or your community is, whatever. I think the, the crux of what I'm also hearing is like, what is it of substance that you're bringing? What is the intentionality behind the joke? Behind the conversation?

• 20:32Speaker 01

  Right.

• 20:33Keke Palmer?

Behind the work? And yeah, I do feel like sometimes that, that, you know, I don't know, when I'm looking at something, I'm seeing something. I think that person is talented, or I think that this is dope, but I'm wondering what their reason is.

• 20:44Speaker 01

  Message. What is the message?

• 20:47Keke Palmer?

  What's the reason?

• 20:47Speaker 01

And it's true. What is the message? What are you saying? Whenever I do something, I try to go, what, what is the elixir? Right? Even when I'm doing comedy. It's not that I'm just doing a bunch of jokes. I'm going, what is the elixir? What is the character in my journey? And that's in stand-up. I put some story. What is this character getting? What is he acquiring? What does he need? Because that elixir, you give to the audience, and that makes them feel good. The jokes is great, but they come back because this way they left, they were infected with something different. And that is the elixir. My elixirs are usually love. I got a stand-up, uh, set about my dead parents, and the elixir was, here's how I got through grief.

• 21:29Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 21:29Speaker 01

And here's how I got to acceptance. And I used that same kind of elixir when it came to acceptance with my child. I have a, a whole hour on my, I have a trans child, and I was just like, yo, here's the journey I went through.

• 21:41Keke Palmer?

That's your new show, Wild Child.

• 21:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 21:43Keke Palmer?

Where you get to talk about Kai.

• 21:44Speaker 01

I'm gonna do a special on it. Um, I'm probably gonna call the special Somewhere Under the Rainbow. Um, and um, I plan to film that in the summer and uh, figure out who's gonna.

• 21:54Keke Palmer?

  Congratulations on that.

• 21:54Speaker 01

Thank you. I'll figure out who's gonna distribute it or what streamer it's gonna be on, but you know, it's a beautiful hour.

• 22:00Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 22:01Speaker 01

And people are, love the fact that, you know, I start here and I say all kinds of crazy [BLEEP] from this angle.

• 22:08Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 22:08Speaker 01

But then I get to, and that's in the five stages of grief that I went through to get to acceptance, which is denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and then acceptance.

• 22:19Keke Palmer?

What was the place of acceptance that you think you, like, when you got there, what was it that you had to accept the most?

• 22:25Speaker 01

That it wasn't for, it wasn't about them. God put me through this journey and they were just a uh, a vessel for my personal growth.

• 22:37Keke Palmer?

This is your parents that you're talking about?

• 22:39Speaker 01

  No, this is my child.

• 22:40Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 22:40Speaker 01

And what I went through with Kai.

• 22:42Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 22:42Speaker 01

I was still healing from my parents and didn't understand that I haven't accepted yet. And when I got to that acceptance, and I was just like, oh, this is what God is trying to do. He's trying to lighten my load. He's trying to uplift me and through this vessel, this thing that I have to change for because it's my child, I learned acceptance and that God writes your story personally for you. If you think you are God and you're gonna judge your child, you are wrong. God is only giving you that mirror for you to look at yourself and go, I need the healing. It's not them. They're doing what they gotta do for their journey to be happy.

• 23:23Speaker 01

And then God was like, what are you doing for your journey to be hap- and I was like, oh.

• 23:29Keke Palmer?

So what it then make you wanna figure out what your journey that you needed to be happy with?

• 23:32Speaker 01

  I instantly smiled.

• 23:33Keke Palmer?

  I mean, sure, many things.

• 23:34Speaker 01

My journey after losing my parents. That, do you know life after death is a whole nother life?

• 23:41Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 23:41Speaker 01

And it's one that you have to come to grip with and a lot of people struggle with and there's a depression involved and it it really was a synonymous journey, my healing and grieving with my parents and then my journey with Kai. And then through all of this, God gave me this little gift as I was losing my girl and I I my daughter and I gained a son. God gave me this little gift called a little brand new little baby girl.

• 24:04Keke Palmer?

  Brand new.

• 24:05Speaker 01

And look at how God gives you through the rain, there's a rainbow, which is Kai and a little pot of gold, which is Axel. Damn, that was prolific. You know what? I'm done. Damn it, call Amazon, tell them get this boy a show. Call Amazon, call Nickelodeon and Disney. Damn, bow, that was church. I I made that up on the top of the dome. I need to.

• 24:30Keke Palmer?

  No, he didn't.

• 24:30Speaker 01

That was off the top of the dome.

• 24:31Keke Palmer?

  No, he didn't.

• 24:32Speaker 01

I need, listen, here's what I gotta do.

• 24:33Keke Palmer?

Y'all, he's really remarkable in genes. All this [BLEEP] he wrote before he came here.

• 24:37Speaker 01

Off the top of the dome.

• 24:37Keke Palmer?

Do not believe nothing this man got to say.

• 24:39Speaker 01

  Towel on me, this is.

• 24:40Keke Palmer?

He been, he been doing this since he was five. I'm not fooling with Marlon.

• 24:49Keke Palmer?

• 25:33Keke Palmer?

Trust me, you're gonna have a time. Baby, I have never, and I mean never, been more devastated than when I found out that some of y'all been sneaking around behind Domino's back just to get your stuffed crust fix. Now, you know us Virgos are incredibly loyal, steadfast even. Cheating, especially on something as serious as Parmesan stuffed crust pizza, ain't gonna fly in this house. I saw y'all slide into those other pizza spots, drive-throughs, ordering that cheese-filled crust like Domino's, and I wouldn't find out about your little rendezvous. But sweetie, the healing starts today because Domino's just dropped their own stuffed crust, and now y'all got no excuse to keep stepping out on them like this. It's time to put those pizza-cheating ways to rest.

• 26:18Keke Palmer?

Domino's new Parmesan stuffed crust is serving pure decadence. With that buttery, handmade dough wrapped around a cascading stream of 100% melty goodness, these are the cheese pools of your dreams. It's very much a goofy movie level of ooey, gooey, cheesy deliciousness. And of course, your girl can't forget about that signature garlic seasoning and Parmesan sprinkle dance on top of that perfectly baked crust, making every single taste taste like it was blessed by the pizza gods themselves. Good to think about it now. I'm already imagining the Parm stuffed pie I've been plotting on. Next time I'm placing my order, you best believe I'm having mushrooms, grilled onions, and some extra peppers just to, you know, keep the vegetables on top. Now, this is the kind of commitment I'm talking about.

• 27:02Keke Palmer?

No more pizza cheating needed when Domino's is bringing this level of excellence to the table. Order Domino's new Parmesan stuffed crust pizza on the Domino's app and use code KIKI to get any three-topping Parmesan stuffed crust pizza for $11.99. Price is higher for some locations. You must ask for this limited-time offer. Prices, participation, delivery area, and charges may vary. Delivery orders subject to local store's delivery charge. Holler, your girl.

• 27:31Speaker 01

I started stand up late. That's why I always told you, like, when you was talking about doing stand up, I was like, "Oh, do it, cuz you gonna be brilliant." Because what people don't understand is, it doesn't take me long, it didn't take me long to really grab on to stand up. And once I did, it became dangerous, right? Because I was no longer telling jokes. Now, for me, it's a show. I know how to do characters, I know how to do voices, I know how to remember scripts. I could do a whole television show in, which is forty something pages. I can do forty seven pages. I can do that in four days, even though they're changing what the material is. I own that, I perform it. They put it out there in the world to be seen. I don't need three years, five years to write and learn material and try it out bit by bit.

• 28:15Speaker 01

No, I could take a whole hour, take it on the road, and rewrite it along the way. And in four months, I could drop a dope ass special. You have a gift. And then the fact that you have voices and characters and you could sing, bro, you, you understand? Like, you're a phenom already. Go do it, cuz you can do whatever you want in your show. And you're gonna find when you tour with your album that you're gonna bring humor, cuz you can't help it.

• 28:39Keke Palmer?

  Cuz I have to.

• 28:40Speaker 01

  You can't help it.

• 28:41Keke Palmer?

To me, that is the language that I speak. We have to laugh.

• 28:44Speaker 01

But that's why we love you.

• 28:45Keke Palmer?

  Life is too damn serious.

• 28:46Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 28:47Keke Palmer?

  This is too much.

• 28:47Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 28:48Keke Palmer?

You gotta laugh. I mean, your brothers probably were, obviously, they're your brothers, but also kind of parental figures, cuz they're a lot older than you.

• 28:54Speaker 01

Oh, no, them [BLEEP] was co-dads.

• 28:56Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 28:57Speaker 01

They was sixteen years older than me. They was like... They were more my parents than my parents was.

• 29:03Keke Palmer?

  So what was it?

• 29:03Speaker 01

My parents was like my grandparents. Keenan, we was Keenan's first kids. So before Keenan had kids, I know that he has Nala and Lil Keenan, and, but, no, he had Marlon, he had Sean, Marlon, Craig, and Damian, and Shontay was his first batch of kids before he had kids. And his kids are like his grandkids. So I'm teaching his kids lessons about their dad that he tired of telling... Cuz he told all of us. He like, "You tell them what I said." He didn't remember what he said.

• 29:35Keke Palmer?

So what was it like? I mean, did, you know, cuz I talk about this with my family a lot. We really look up to your family, not just because you guys are hilarious and amazingly talented, but because you have created a lineage that continues your legacy forward. Did Keenan sit at the table and he sit down and say, "This is what we gonna do and this is how we gonna do it." Or was it just keeping you guys around it and seeing who spoke to what? Or who felt what? Like, how did y'all decide? This is a, we're the Wayans family.

• 30:01Speaker 01

I think my father was a very hard worker and he really loved God. And he was very disciplined about coming home to his kids. And having a father figure in our household was everything. Because that spoke to us. No matter what happened during the day, no matter how many times my mother would curse my father out, my father was like, "Unweathered, I'm coming home and I'ma be with my children. I'ma raise my boys, I'ma raise my daughters. I'ma make sure that I am a figure. I'ma get up, I'ma read my..." to be an example. My mother was just brilliantly talented, like a frustrated artist. And she was brilliant and she gave us love. And what Keenan learned from my mother and my father was to be an example

• 30:46Speaker 01

and to give us love. So Keenan just was that guy that would, he sent me and Sean. Damon was getting in trouble. Damon came out to California, stayed with Keenan, worked in the mailroom, worked his way up. Kim left college, uh, finished college and came out to California. And Keenan was like, "Here's what you do." Me and Sean, and Craig and Damon, who would bring us out to California in the summertime or in wintertime and let us spend a week outside of the projects to see what it was to be in Hollywood. So he infected us by example. And it wasn't that he pushed this on us. It was just something that we wanted to do. And he was like, "Okay, well..."

• 31:22Keke Palmer?

  That's how you do it.

• 31:23Speaker 01

Right, right. When I saw my brother on Johnny Carson, when I was...

• 31:28Keke Palmer?

  I mean, that's crazy.

• 31:31Speaker 01

Five, on a black and white TV. And you know, I'm dreaming, me and Sean, we in our bed at night watching WPIX. Like, "Oh, we're gonna be the honeymooners. We're gonna have our own sitcom." This is what we were saying at five and six years old. And but to see your brother in black and white on the television. I was like, "Oh, wait, you mean these dreams that I have? I can actually make it a reality?" And from there, that's all we do is try and be examples.

• 31:55Keke Palmer?

I mean, it was like, I mean, you guys just got the big, I think, where were we at? The BET Awards or were we at the NAACP Awards?

• 32:01Speaker 01

  And you got your award.

• 32:02Keke Palmer?

  You got y'all...

• 32:03Speaker 01

Same night. We got our flowers same night.

• 32:05Keke Palmer?

And it was the first time that I think I'd ever met Damon. And so I was like screaming, but I was also like, "Where's Keenan? I want Keenan." Where are you?

• 32:13Speaker 01

Yeah, we wanted him home so we could pay tribute to him.

• 32:16Keke Palmer?

It was so good to see all of you guys. But what I was gonna say was, oh, doggone it, I done lost my damn train of thought.

• 32:22Speaker 01

  See, that's that ADHD.

• 32:24Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 32:24Speaker 01

Can we get some Ritalin, please? Some, uh, what's that called? What's the other one?

• 32:28Keke Palmer?

Adderall, Adderall. Oh, I know what you're gonna say. I think they talked about it when they did the big tribute. But just that, a lot of people, I, I, I really be wanting them to pause for a moment and really understand all the different things that you guys have given us because the, the, the Super Bowl halftime show, that started because In Living Color was such a huge show. They were like, oh, we need something in this time.

• 32:48Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 32:49Keke Palmer?

And it was In Living Color that, that now, that, that continued. But the first time was with that show. I mean, when you sit back and think of all the things that you've done, that your brothers have done, the cultural impact that you guys have made, what do you do with it? You agree what I'm saying? Like, what do you do with it? And, and how do you feel about it in this time? I mean, when you were doing it, maybe you weren't thinking much of it, but...

• 33:13Speaker 01

We just keep doing it, right? We don't, we're not guys that, I don't look for my flowers. I don't. I, I'm too busy planting new trees to try and pick up or accept flowers. My hands is dirty. I'm about this work.

• 33:27Keke Palmer?

  That's right.

• 33:28Speaker 01

Marlon about this work. I, I'm, you know, idle hands is devil's workshop, so I don't get in no kind of nonsense or trouble. My mouth may get me in trouble, but Marlon is a hardworking man. I try to be an example for my children, an example to my community, example to my brothers and my sisters that have raised me to be this way. I know my parents are still watching me. I know God has watched me. So I just do the work. So I don't, the first, the Double ACP Awards was the first time I, we picked up our flowers. Like, oh, wow, we made history?

• 33:58Keke Palmer?

  Multiple times.

• 33:59Speaker 01

We're like, that's great. We back to work. I'm looking at this Scary Movie Six. I'm like, I wanna knock this out the park. I want every, I need everybody to laugh again. The purpose of this right now is I need everybody in the theaters in droves laughing again at each other. We all need to, as a world, we need to change the frequency and we need to feel good about each other.

• 34:21Keke Palmer?

And I love, while, while I do think it's important to get your flowers and I always, every time I see you, I wanna give you your flowers, to give you your family your flowers. I think it's so important also what you says. At the end of the day, you do what you do because you love it.

• 34:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:32Keke Palmer?

And I think a lot of times in our generation now, we spend so much time being like, so and so's underestimated. By who?

• 34:37Speaker 01

  Right.

• 34:38Keke Palmer?

On what grounds, to whose standards? I'm doing what I'm doing because I love it. And if it touch one person, then it's done what it's supposed to do.

• 34:46Speaker 01

Because we always look at the standards of awards and things and that, these acknowledgements. I don't do it for that. I do it for whoever I infect in a positive way, then I'm for you. If you don't like my stuff, maybe I ain't for you right now. Maybe in 10 years or you go through something in your life and then you'll figure out what the hell I was saying 10 years ago. But I'm not for everybody. But the ones I'm for, you know where to find me. And you gotta be authentic, right? 100%, 150% authentically yourself, right? At all times. And either you [BLEEP] with me or you [BLEEP] off. It's a very simple thing. I don't ask people to do nothing. I just be me and I hope that is good for you. And if not, a little bit sprinkle that. I don't give [BLEEP] on it.

• 35:26Keke Palmer?

So speaking of scare movie, am I getting Sean and you? Am I getting my duo?

• 35:29Speaker 01

  Oh, you definitely gonna see.

• 35:30Keke Palmer?

  Because I need the duo.

• 35:32Speaker 01

We trying to put the band back together.

• 35:33Keke Palmer?

  Yes, I need it.

• 35:35Speaker 01

We trying to put the whole band back together.

• 35:37Keke Palmer?

I mean, growing up with you and Sean, it was just too much.

• 35:41Speaker 01

  I miss working with Sean.

• 35:42Keke Palmer?

I know, we missed y'all together. Y'all were the duo, whether it was the show, whether it was scare movie, whatever y'all was doing. Also a sleeper, motherfreaking The Sixth Man. You remember that one?

• 35:53Speaker 01

That was supposed to be me and Sean.

• 35:54Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, but it was.

• 35:55Speaker 01

  And Sean turned it down.

• 35:56Keke Palmer?

It's what's some, Kadim who we love.

• 35:58Speaker 01

We know the [BLEEP] brothers, but man, you know, hey, Sean said no.

• 36:04Keke Palmer?

When did Sean be like, brother, I'm tired right now. I don't want to keep doing the movies, like doing the duo?

• 36:09Speaker 01

It wasn't that. I just think Sean and I, you know, like, he has a different pace than I have. I think if you look at our careers, Sean's slugging percentage is gonna be 1,000. That man goes up to the plate, he knocks it out the park. I'm gonna be the dude that gets on base a lot, that steals a [BLEEP] load of bases. I'm gonna make history a different way. My slugging percentage over time is gonna be 700. It may not be 1,000, but you understand? I'm playing all different kinds of positions. I don't just play the outfield. I play shortstop. I'm a dramatic actor. I'm a stand-up comedian. I'm dropping specials. I'm, I, this is what I do. And I don't, as much as I love my brothers, I love Damon, I love Keenan, I love Sean, I love my sister.

• 36:54Speaker 01

I love them all. I love all my siblings. I don't want to beat them. I want to be me. And sometimes you as an individual, God gives you that time and that synapse for you to find you. And I have very opinionated brothers. And sometimes it's not that I'm a rebel.

• 37:16Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 37:16Speaker 01

It's just that I I know they raised me and they are trailblazers. But if I want to be a trailblazer, then to just follow their footprints, that makes me a follower. If I want to be a leader, I go, oh, I appreciate that path you you got to. But look, we stopped right there. But maybe if we go over here with these bushes off, we cut this way, we gonna find that water.

• 37:38Keke Palmer?

  Mm hmm.

• 37:39Speaker 01

And I may do that and fall off a cliff. But that's part of being a trailblazer. Because I got the next generation after me. And I want them to know that follow me up until a point, follow and use what works for you. But if you don't like what the I'm doing, do it your way.

• 38:01Keke Palmer?

• 39:03Keke Palmer?

How's it been with this next generation for you?

• 39:06Speaker 01

Oh, they some hard-headed little Negroes.

• 39:10Keke Palmer?

  They sound like you.

• 39:12Speaker 01

They are, but it's been great. Honestly, I'm so proud of them. I look at my son and he works with Sean's daughter and he works with their other daughter and she's doing music and they're doing directing and producing music videos and they're writing movies and Keenan's son is creating television shows and I just look at all of our kids and, you know, Sean's other son is a music artist, Kai is writing movies and this next generation is gonna understand and take the business of our business to the next level.

• 39:43Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 39:44Speaker 01

We were great farmers and great agriculturalists. I'm into industry. That's my job. My assignment is to build us into industry and then after that, we're gonna go into education. And then from there, from education, they're gonna take it to the next level, which is philanthropy and the overall branding of what we set out to do and it takes generations to do that.

• 40:06Keke Palmer?

Because there is the whole thing with the branding too, right? You know what I'm saying? Like the Wayans Brothers, y'all didn't just make movies. Y'all also created a lane for what it meant to like create a brand for individuals and then as a family. Because now we're dealing with comedians and talent in different mediums now. We have the Kai Sannats, Drew Skis, we have the streaming, that industry. Then we have some people that are kinda getting into the art of stand-up, but not often. We see sketch a lot, not one centralized place outside of SNL. What word of advice would you give to them on what it really means to build a brand? Not just to go viral?

• 40:41Speaker 01

I think you gotta do it all, right? The fear, I did a show called Funniest Wins and we took people that were on Vine. We took people that was on YouTube. We took people that did like TikTok sketches and stuff. And then we took one, like one of those people that do one-woman shows and, you know, they do sketch and do sketch on their Instagram, whatever, and then we took comedians. And the winners were always the comedians because the comedians understood.

• 41:11Keke Palmer?

  The ones that did stand-up.

• 41:12Speaker 01

  Right, the writing.

• 41:13Keke Palmer?

  Incredible craft.

• 41:13Speaker 01

You gotta know where the jokes are. As much as you're making a sketch, you have an instinct, right? It's when I first started doing comedy, right, when I was 19, I had great instincts. But they weren't as sharp as Sean's. It wasn't as sharp as Damon's, not as sharp as Kenan's. But me going on the road-

• 41:30Keke Palmer?

It's so crazy when I hear you say- I wanted to interrupt you, but it's so crazy when I hear you say that. When I would be watching these, these, or these.

• 41:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 41:41Keke Palmer?

  I'll just wear these then.

• 41:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 41:42Keke Palmer?

That's like, I mean, I'm thinking, do we have a problem? Like, how could that comedy not be-

• 41:50Speaker 01

But that was me at nineteen, with the instincts that I had.

• 41:53Keke Palmer?

They were amazing instincts. They're the instincts that I emulate.

• 41:57Speaker 01

But, and it's good to have those, right? And that's what you have, you have an instinct.

• 42:01Keke Palmer?

  I'm so inspired by that.

• 42:02Speaker 01

I know, but that's good that you have that. But over time, I think now, I'm a much better artist than I was when I was nineteen. Nineteen, I was working on instinct. Now, I've been doing stand-up, and I've put out now five specials, working on my sixth special. I know how to rock a room. When I get on the next set, when I get on this scary movie set, I know where the jokes are. I know why a scene's not working. Here's what this needs. You become a professor and a scientist. I've had, start having Kenan's eyes, not just have Marlon's instincts. So I got Marlon's instincts. Now I have the experience of Kenan and the experience of Damon to understand where the jokes are. They're here. This is what's needed. Cause the writer in my head, and it's by doing the work. So I tell every artist, get your ass on stage.

• 42:45Speaker 01

Because then when you're doing your sketches, you know what's funny and you know what's not. You won't be inappropriate. Comedy's about appropriateness. You can go far as hell, and sometimes you'll go even further, but can you buy the audience back after that?

• 42:58Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, where's the contact?

• 42:59Speaker 01

  Did you go far enough?

• 43:00Keke Palmer?

Yeah, where's the contact? We lose so much of it also these days. Um, quickly, who's writing it? Are you guys all writing as a family? Is Kenan writing Scary Movie?

• 43:08Speaker 01

Scary Movie Six, all of them. Me, Sean, Ivory, uh, Rick Alvarez, and my nephew Chris.

• 43:13Keke Palmer?

  Rick, what up?

• 43:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 43:14Keke Palmer?

Okay, I, I gotta move because I'm, I could keep you here all day talking about-

• 43:17Speaker 01

  Scary Movie Six, June 12th.

• 43:18Keke Palmer?

  Scary Movie Six.

• 43:19Speaker 01

Next summer, it's going, you know, we got these jokes.

• 43:22Keke Palmer?

But we've also got him, that's getting ready to come out. It's actually produced by Jordan Peele.

• 43:26Speaker 01

Yes. And you work with Jordan?

• 43:28Keke Palmer?

  Love Jordan.

• 43:28Speaker 01

  How cool is he?

• 43:29Keke Palmer?

  He's amazing.

• 43:31Speaker 01

He's the nicest, like, and he's like quiet, like, and he's so funny.

• 43:35Keke Palmer?

All the funny people I know usually are not like you or I.

• 43:38Speaker 01

  It's just me and you.

• 43:40Keke Palmer?

  They're usually like-

• 43:40Speaker 01

  We have too much coffee.

• 43:42Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, they're literally like, hello.

• 43:43Speaker 01

That's cause they're on their meds. They're on that Adderall and Ritalin.

• 43:47Keke Palmer?

They got the calm juice. Me and you still running off the [BLEEP]. Um, but yeah, so how was it? I was with you when you were just, you were filming. You were getting like, you went through a physical transformation.

• 43:58Speaker 01

Yeah, I got, I got, I got buff.

• 44:00Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 44:00Speaker 01

I had to slim down and get that off me. Cause I don't wanna live like that. I'm doing scary movie.

• 44:04Keke Palmer?

He said, I don't wanna be Dwayne, The Rock Johnson.

• 44:06Speaker 01

I don't, I don't wanna be big like that. You know, it's too much to carry and I'm doing scary movie. I can't be shorty like this, son. Nigga, nigga, I can't smoke my weed. It hurts to pull that weed up, nigga. These muscles is too tight. Ah, [BLEEP].

• 44:22Keke Palmer?

Remember, old boy? Take my good hand. Scary movie two.

• 44:27Speaker 01

We gonna, we gonna try and bring everybody back when you see this. Um, I think you, you gonna be, people gonna be happy about Scary Movie Six. Um, him is a different kind of movie.

• 44:36Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 44:37Speaker 01

I think it's, uh, people seeing me in a different way. It's a psychological horror thriller set in the world of, of football. And what I love is, Justin Tipping is the director.

• 44:47Keke Palmer?

  Shout out to him.

• 44:48Speaker 01

Wonderful director. Like this, this dude.

• 44:50Keke Palmer?

  He also did Kicks.

• 44:51Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 44:52Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 44:52Speaker 01

  He gonna be somebody.

• 44:53Keke Palmer?

  From the Bay.

• 44:53Speaker 01

If you get a chance, please.

• 44:56Keke Palmer?

Yeah, no, I know his work.

• 44:57Speaker 01

And he's the coolest guy. You should wanna work with him. He's a great collaborator. Um, I just had a great time.

• 45:01Keke Palmer?

  Tyreek Withers.

• 45:02Speaker 01

Tyreek Withers does a great job.

• 45:03Keke Palmer?

And, um, I liked his episode that he did in Atlanta.

• 45:06Speaker 01

But that was cute. But his move, but his performance in this, to hold it down, especially against all the crazy stuff I was giving him. For him to just stay grounded, stay there, the reactions and make you feel for his character the way he did. I just think he did a, a, a great job. So kudos to Tyree.

• 45:22Keke Palmer?

And Julia Fox plays your wife?

• 45:24Speaker 01

Julia Fox is amazing in the movie. Plays my wife, but she has a thing.

• 45:28Keke Palmer?

Now that's a couple for your ass.

• 45:29Speaker 01

I know, I, I wish, I was wishing for love scenes, but man.

• 45:32Keke Palmer?

  Now wait a damn minute.

• 45:34Speaker 01

It gave me Denzel Pelican game, did me dirty. But anyway, and then there's me. I, I just think it's the most untethered I've been in a movie in a dramatic way. That's grounded, but crazy, that's off center. The performance, it's, it's, it's, it's.

• 45:51Keke Palmer?

And this kinda covers that like, you know, Stanley Kubrick Eyes Wide Shut, like Illuminati. What happens in the corporate, in the industry? When you are trying to win, like what will you do?

• 46:01Speaker 01

  What would you sacrifice?

• 46:02Keke Palmer?

  What would you sacrifice?

• 46:03Speaker 01

Right. What are you willing to sacrifice? It's the question that all artists, you know, and they crazy with all this Illuminati this. I ain't never met no Illuminati. Nobody ever came to me and was like, hey, man, you suck this [BLEEP]. And I'ma give you these movies. Bruh, I never had, I never met that guy.

• 46:19Keke Palmer?

  Yeah, no.

• 46:20Speaker 01

Never met, I never met the guy, never. And if you ever do, and I will tell you, artists, that's why you take and you equip yourself with true art, with the skill set.

• 46:33Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 46:33Speaker 01

So this way, you're not desperate for opportunity because you create your own opportunity.

• 46:39Keke Palmer?

  Yes.

• 46:39Speaker 01

I don't wanna put somebody in something just so I could sleep with them. That's the law. I'd rather not sleep with you.

• 46:45Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 46:45Speaker 01

And just have you work with me cuz that's, that's great. I don't wanna sleep with you. If you sleep with me, I don't want you in my movie. I won't be around that all day long, every, hi, hon. That takes my energy away when I'm on set. And anytime people wanna deplete you in that way, it's wrong and it's toxic. And I will tell people, don't sleep where you work.

• 47:04Keke Palmer?

And this is in every industry also.

• 47:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:06Keke Palmer?

Not just, a lot of times we hear about it in Hollywood, hear the concept of what people think Illuminati is, but it's in every industry. Politics, it's in the corporate offices. Anytime somebody asks you to do something you don't wanna do.

• 47:16Speaker 01

  Say no.

• 47:17Keke Palmer?

That you feel you have to do because you're gonna get, that's pretty much in my mind, the vibes of Illuminati. Don't say it cuz it'll be one thing after, don't do it. It's one thing after the next, after the next, after the next. That's what that means to me. It's not as plain and dry that I think people think.

• 47:30Speaker 01

If you have the skill set, you never need to do that, right? Uh, if you look at like, uh, In Living Color, Keenan equipped J-Lo with confidence. You are a brand. You're not just a dancer. You know what? You are a good singer. You could even be a better singer if you trained. You know what you are? You're the biggest movie star in the world. What does Julia Roberts or Meg Ryan have that you don't have? And it's the possibility to teach people how to dream and to believe in themselves. Don't believe in the Wizard of Oz. I'm not the person pulling the strings. When people are pulling those puppet strings, they don't love you. People that love you just equip you with knowledge and the confidence that if you go out there and you get it.

• 48:10Keke Palmer?

  That's right.

• 48:11Speaker 01

Then, and that's why people love Keenan.

• 48:13Keke Palmer?

Yes, cuz he tell you to invest in your damn selves. Stop always coming out here with your hands out because they ain't gonna invest in the vision you want for you.

• 48:21Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 48:21Keke Palmer?

And I mean, I just wanna point on this. I think after, obviously, everything with Scary Movie, you guys went and did Haunted House and broke records off of your own complete investment. I just want you to just school them real quick on how y'all did that.

• 48:36Speaker 01

What happened was, I, you know, that's a movie I really was trying to do with my brothers, and but my brothers were doing other things. And I was just like, and I remember I sat down with Keenan and I was just like, listen, I don't, I don't want your approval. Uh, and this was uh, me growing up. I said, I just want your blessing. I have this thing that I wanna do. He was like, go ahead and do it. I got this vision of this. Okay, bet. And I remember they were doing Scary Movie Five, and I remember how that felt for me and my family. We didn't like it. Yeah. And we knew we had more to give. And the, how the franchise was ripped from us after Scary Movie Two. And, you know, we was, I was just like, alright, well, I'mma create something new, like we always do. I'mma create something new.

• 49:20Speaker 01

When they canceled Wayans Brothers, we was like, great, we're doing Scary Movie. Just cuz one monkey don't stop a show. Just cuz one door closes, a thousand dollars open. So when Scary Movie was happening, before it even happened, I was like, here's the next thing I wanna do, Haunted House. Me and Rick sat down and we did that for a million and a half dollars. So, I went back, nineteen million dollars was the first Scary Movie budget. I didn't have that. I had a million and a half dollars. And we wrote the movie, we did it in one location. Mike Titus, who's now the director of Haunted House, Haunted House Two, um, uh, Fifty Shades of Black, Sex Tuplets and Naked, now is the director on Scary Movie Six. And so- Bless that brother too. Movie became huge, Haunted House.

• 50:03Speaker 01

And we opened to eighteen million dollars. We made the movie for a million and a half dollars. So, we was already in the black, first weekend. And so, it's just teaching you that you always bet on yourself. Always. I got the skill set. You can't steal my skill set. You could take the franchise. Eventually, people be like, nah, that, that's that bull, that don't taste like Wayans. That, that's KFC. That ain't Popeye's Chicken. I know what the difference between, audience ain't dumb. And so, what I'm happy about is with Scary Movie Six, they get a combination of everything that I've learned over the years. And a more seasoned group of artists, bringing you, taking us back to the franchise that we created. Because they don't know what to do with Frankenstein.

• 50:46Speaker 01

The only person that knows to do Frankenstein is Dr. Frankenstein. So they got Dr. Frankenstein back, and Scary Movie Six, we gonna knock that [BLEEP] out the park.

• 50:54Keke Palmer?

I'm so excited, I just wanted to say that because I think a lot of times, you know, today, especially with our community, we spend so much time thinking about getting the validation from this place, or that place, or I need this person to say. All you need is you to say. And if you rock with it, and you got two people that's rocking with you and they gonna help you make it to the finish line, that's all you need. And I think, you know, you guys are a great example of that.

• 51:15Speaker 01

And you know what we feel good? You know what flowers are to us? Watching people like you, that come along and pave the way for the next generation, and still give the forefathers their love and their flowers. And to know that we do it so that you can see it, so that you can do it, so they can see it. So you keep doing you, and I'm glad that as peers and as artists, we're gonna do something big and great together. And thank you for having me on your podcast.

• 51:42Keke Palmer?

Thank you for being here. You know, you and your family, y'all mean so much, so much.

• 51:47Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 51:48Keke Palmer?

  Okay, wait.

• 51:48Speaker 01

And I love your daddy, he gave me the biggest hug.

• 51:50Keke Palmer?

Because we love you, my daddy, he the one who told us.

• 51:52Speaker 01

  Gang, gang daddy.

• 51:53Keke Palmer?

He gave me the history on y'all family when I was yay high. So wait a minute, we gotta play a game, and it'll be quick. It's called Ones Gotta Go. I'm gonna give you a list of different things in different categories that are meaningful.

• 52:03Speaker 01

This the part that I get in trouble. This the part to get me canceled, go on.

• 52:07Keke Palmer?

These categories are stacked with beloved black staples, and I mean, you know, Ones Gotta Go.

• 52:12Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 52:13Keke Palmer?

  So here we go.

• 52:13Speaker 01

Well, besides this shirt that sells on my thing, I want to say, I have a cigar line, Liga Tridente, if you need to check it out. Fox Cigars, online at FoxCigars.com. They sell my cigars, Liga Tridente, made in Honduras, and they're killing right now.

• 52:31Keke Palmer?

How come everybody gets an accent when they say Honduras?

• 52:33Speaker 01

Because you have to, you have to respect the culture. You know what I mean? And then, uh...

• 52:37Keke Palmer?

  He never said that, Honduras.

• 52:39Speaker 01

Honduras. And then you have to roll the Rs, Honduras. And then you can get this shirt on, at Marlon Wayans, MarlonWayans.com. And these pants, I designed these.

• 52:49Keke Palmer?

  No.

• 52:50Speaker 01

I don't have a name for them, but I designed them, I was like...

• 52:53Keke Palmer?

  I'm [BLEEP] impressed.

• 52:54Speaker 01

Some skinny, skinny, skinny Kravitz jeans, you know what I mean?

• 52:58Keke Palmer?

Okay, ones gotta go, rap legends Tupac, Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z. Yeah, get ready to cry.

• 53:03Speaker 01

  Tupac?

• 53:04Keke Palmer?

  Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z.

• 53:06Speaker 01

  Tupac, Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z.

• 53:10Keke Palmer?

  Completely unfair.

• 53:11Speaker 01

Here's the thing, I'm gonna keep it a buck, alright? And I've known, I met all them.

• 53:16Keke Palmer?

  You met all of them?

• 53:18Speaker 01

  Yeah, I met them all.

• 53:20Keke Palmer?

  You met Tupac and Biggie?

• 53:22Speaker 01

Above the rim, me and Tupac were like... Me and Tupac were friends, that was my guy.

• 53:27Keke Palmer?

What was he like? Would he have liked me?

• 53:28Speaker 01

Funny as hell, funny as hell. Was he would have liked you?

• 53:33Keke Palmer?

Why would that be the question?

• 53:34Speaker 01

That's crazy, you want me to hook you up with Tupac? He's dead.

• 53:38Speaker 01

But I just wanna know he would hit this. That's all I wanna know. Cause I love his eyelashes, I want my baby to have eyelashes like Tupac.

• 53:46Keke Palmer?

Skin with gorgeous eyelashes, everything, okay, anyway.

• 53:48Speaker 01

Pac was a good dude, um, so, uh, and with that said, um, I'm an east coast hip-hop dude.

• 53:55Keke Palmer?

Well, yeah, y'all from, you from New York.

• 53:56Speaker 01

So, I'm, uh, you talking about Jay, Big, Pac, and Nas? Pac gotta go.

• 54:03Keke Palmer?

  Aww.

• 54:03Speaker 01

I love him like a bro, and I love Dear Mama, but, come on, man, Nas...

• 54:09Keke Palmer?

  I love Nas.

• 54:10Speaker 01

Nas, Nas even, eh, eh, later on in life, his new albums is even as good as his old albums. Jay-Z, come on, you gotta put Jay in the top because Jay-Z's first, uh, billionaire in the game and a huge brand and he married to Beyonce. How you not, come on, man, he get ten more points because he married to Beyonce.

• 54:29Keke Palmer?

I agree, cause Beyonce, come on. Nineties black sitcom kings, Martin, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Jamie Foxx Show, The Wayans Brothers.

• 54:41Speaker 01

You trying to get me in trouble? I ain't gonna say The Wayans Brothers.

• 54:46Speaker 01

We, we live since, somebody else gotta die tonight.

• 54:48Keke Palmer?

  You know I love Pac.

• 54:49Speaker 01

  You gonna die tonight?

• 54:50Keke Palmer?

Rest in peace, Pac. He's the best.

• 54:53Speaker 01

  The best, man.

• 54:54Keke Palmer?

  The best.

• 54:55Speaker 01

  Bang, bang, bang.

• 54:55Keke Palmer?

Oh my gosh, I loved him so much.

• 54:57Speaker 01

They, they, we, we didn't make it to NBC because NBC wanted to, um, we did a table read and they, they thought he was too ghetto. And they want us to have a different father, and they was thinking like a Danny Glover type, and we was like, no.

• 55:09Keke Palmer?

Love Danny, but also I, I love...

• 55:11Speaker 01

It's the flavor of the show. We was like, it's John Witherspoon or it's not, or it's nowhere, or it's not. Well, we ain't gonna do the show, and they was like, well, Negro, you're not doing the show. And so, we was like, wait, wait, hold on, hold on, what? Danny Glover you say?

• 55:27Speaker 01

But then, you know, the WB was starting and it was like, I think that's a great combination. So, everything is God. One, one man's trash is another man's treasure. And it's not about the doors that close, it's the ones that open up. So, with that said, you said Martin, who I love to death. Martin made me laugh, even when we was doing, um, Wayans Brothers. So, he's off, I gotta put Martin over to the side.

• 55:50Keke Palmer?

Fresh Prince of Bel Air, in the Jamie Foxx show.

• 55:52Speaker 01

  It's between Jamie and Will.

• 55:57Speaker 01

  Why you doing it?

• 55:58Keke Palmer?

  This is so fun.

• 55:59Speaker 01

  Okay, now, only because...

• 56:06Speaker 01

What, what happened? You said who and who? No, only because of this. I, Will, I just played, so I have an attachment now. I would've said Jamie Foxx.

• 56:15Keke Palmer?

  Okay.

• 56:17Speaker 01

I would've said Will Smith, Fresh Prince, uh, Bel Air gotta go. Fresh Prince gotta go, bye. I would've said that.

• 56:23Keke Palmer?

  You would have.

• 56:24Speaker 01

  I would've.

• 56:25Keke Palmer?

  But you are Bel Air.

• 56:26Speaker 01

Because, my son, I'm a Wayans Brothers type of [BLEEP]. I'm a, I like poor people's perspective of comedy, cuz that's where I come from. I come from the blue collar. I come from, hey, looking in the closet and go, I don't know what we gonna eat today. Okay, what do we got? We got rice, eggs, and, uh, flour. We gonna have rice, eggs, flour soup. You know, don't sound delicious, but that's what we got.

• 56:49Keke Palmer?

But it's gonna get the job done.

• 56:50Speaker 01

And Martin just has that ghetto appeal and is physical. And, and, and Jamie, cuz he could sing and all that. Will, Fresh Prince, my son loves Fresh Prince because...

• 57:00Keke Palmer?

  He said Will.

• 57:01Speaker 01

No, listen, no, not that Will isn't funny. Will's funny. But, my son liked Fresh Prince, cuz he grew up, he is the Fresh Prince. He goes to the private schools. I don't know [BLEEP] about private school except, we used to jump the [BLEEP] and they had nice, uh, equipment to steal from. They had good Walkmans. So, you wanna go Walkman, go to a private school. They got the Sony's with the, the, the sport one, now you can drop them water for like five seconds. Here's the thing, so with that said, I just did Bel Air. No, I, I did Bel Air.

• 57:29Keke Palmer?

You played the dad. You were so deep on there.

• 57:32Speaker 01

And it got me invested. So, now, I love Jamie and I love, Bentley Evans is one of my best friends. Um, so, I don't... Will gotta go. I'm sorry, Fresh Prince gotta go.

• 57:44Keke Palmer?

  It's done.

• 57:45Speaker 01

Cause Will don't hang out. We and Will don't hang out. So I gotta look at Bentley tomorrow when we smoke cigars.

• 57:52Speaker 01

So I want you to know, hey, Bent, you know what I mean? Now, I may be fired off press, uh, Bel Air, but they're gonna get canceled anyway.

• 58:02Keke Palmer?

He just dropped it. Breaking news.

• 58:05Speaker 01

And I'm on the fourth season. I'm sorry, Jamie gotta go. You ain't getting me fired. What if they decide to come back for season five?

• 58:12Keke Palmer?

  Pick one.

• 58:13Speaker 01

Jamie, Jamie Fox Show gotta go.

• 58:14Keke Palmer?

Movie franchises, Friday, Scream, House Party, Madea.

• 58:18Speaker 01

White people gotta go. Uh, Scream gotta go. I am not gonna do that to any of our establishments. House Party brand, I'm not gonna hate on the Fridays brand. Ice Cube, as a fellow brother in this industry, we have too much to work toward. I can't go, hey, nah.

• 58:35Keke Palmer?

  Buy what's craving.

• 58:36Speaker 01

  Scream gotta go.

• 58:36Keke Palmer?

  We love you.

• 58:37Speaker 01

Them white boys gonna work again, you know? They gonna be fine. They gonna be fine. Neve Campbell gonna eat.

• 58:44Keke Palmer?

I have another really hard one. I have another really hard one.

• 58:48Speaker 01

Stop doing, what's wrong with you? Why you be starting fights? I didn't come on here for this. You got nice lotion legs. Go on, let your lotion itself. Cause I'm, I'm used to a half dry foot, but yours is all the way through. Like, like between takes, you got somebody oiling your foot.

• 59:04Keke Palmer?

Molly, you is so funny. Okay, iconic black TV moms. Aunt Viv, yeah, exactly. Oh, because here it comes. Aunt Viv. Florida Evans.

• 59:15Speaker 01

  Damn, damn, damn.

• 59:18Keke Palmer?

  Harriet Winslow. Lisa Landry.

• 59:23Speaker 01

From what, from what, from what?

• 59:25Keke Palmer?

  Sister, sister.

• 59:26Speaker 01

  Okay, sister, sister.

• 59:28Keke Palmer?

  Yeah.

• 59:29Speaker 01

  Who else?

• 59:31Keke Palmer?

  So Harriet Winslow.

• 59:32Speaker 01

Yeah. That's the mother on the Winslow show.

• 59:35Keke Palmer?

On the Winslow show. That's the mother on Family Matters.

• 59:37Speaker 01

Okay. Now, if this was Urkel's mother, I have a harder time.

• 59:40Keke Palmer?

It ain't Urkel's mama. You know what was so crazy is Urkel came on that show. That was Harriet's show.

• 59:45Speaker 01

  I know.

• 59:46Keke Palmer?

Urkel came on there talking about something that I knew that.

• 59:49Speaker 01

  But that's.

• 59:50Keke Palmer?

And it was, now we call it Urkel.

• 59:52Speaker 01

Because when you come to do something, there's no such thing as small parts. There's only such thing as small actors.

• 59:59Keke Palmer?

Actually was not even, I think he was like maybe a recurring role. He was like the guest role. And came on and literally, by the eighth season, he was going to space.

• 1:00:08Speaker 01

  And I just want.

• 1:00:10Keke Palmer?

  What the?

• 1:00:12Keke Palmer?

The hell, he went from Stefan.

• 1:00:14Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:00:15Keke Palmer?

  Urkel to Stefan.

• 1:00:16Speaker 01

When he goes Stefan and try to be cute, I was like, man, you don't get this grown man out these.

• 1:00:21Keke Palmer?

  That was exceptional.

• 1:00:22Speaker 01

When his voice changed, like, I ain't do that, come on.

• 1:00:24Keke Palmer?

Yeah, he was, yeah, I was like, he went from, didn't I do that? It's like, wait a minute, he grew up.

• 1:00:30Speaker 01

Um, and then who was the next one?

• 1:00:32Keke Palmer?

Aunt Viv, you know Aunt Viv, either one, light skin or brown skin.

• 1:00:37Speaker 01

I can't get rid of them, because he already got rid of her, so I'm not gonna do that to Aunt Viv. I, she, I, she ain't gonna get one, a bullet from Will Smith and one from Marlon, I ain't gonna do that. Then I'll be in a reunion episode and we gonna cry together, I ain't, I'm not doing that.

• 1:00:49Keke Palmer?

You know, I found out that the Aunt Viv that replaced the original Aunt Viv is married to Tim Reed, the father on Sister Sister.

• 1:00:58Speaker 01

  And I love Tim Reed, so I can't, and he's a pioneer and I can't.

• 1:01:01Keke Palmer?

  Hi, you're freaking there.

• 1:01:03Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:01:03Keke Palmer?

  Okay, anyway, back to it.

• 1:01:04Speaker 01

  Who's the other option?

• 1:01:05Keke Palmer?

  Florida Evans?

• 1:01:07Speaker 01

  Yeah, no, that's.

• 1:01:08Keke Palmer?

  Yes, you can never.

• 1:01:09Speaker 01

That's, that's black mom goddess like this.

• 1:01:12Keke Palmer?

You know what I mean? Harriet Winslow, I know who you gonna pick, or Lisa Landry. Harriet Winslow, Family Matters, Lisa Landry, sister sister, ow.

• 1:01:33Speaker 01

Aw, man, you gonna have me beat up with the next NAACP award. I'm gonna say, I'm gonna say, uh, light skin Aunt Viv.

• 1:01:43Keke Palmer?

  Gotta go.

• 1:01:44Speaker 01

  She gotta go.

• 1:01:44Keke Palmer?

You went back and did a reverse on the reverse.

• 1:01:46Speaker 01

Okay, Lisa Landry, cuz I ain't watched a lot of Sister Sister, apparently you did.

• 1:01:49Keke Palmer?

  Jack A. Harry?

• 1:01:51Speaker 01

Oh, no, you can't get rid of Jack A. Harry.

• 1:01:53Keke Palmer?

  That's what I done said.

• 1:01:54Speaker 01

Ooh, you can't get rid of Jack A. Harry.

• 1:01:56Keke Palmer?

  Exactly, right?

• 1:01:58Speaker 01

Them hips on 227, you know how many times my young self masturbated, oh, no, no, that's.

• 1:02:03Keke Palmer?

Now, why did you get Jack A. involved?

• 1:02:04Speaker 01

Lot of, wow, that's back when you could actually touch yourself to sitcoms, you can't do that no more. Government don't allow for that. Oh, I'm wrong? I did it to cartoons, Smurfette, got it. She's gonna be pregnant right now with a little black baby.

• 1:02:17Keke Palmer?

One thing I have to tell you that blew my mind is your level of honesty when you sat up there on Ellen saying that you told Tiffany Haddish. You know, she had to get it together, whatever like that. I just had to pause for a minute because.

• 1:02:29Speaker 01

  I love her.

• 1:02:30Keke Palmer?

But you know, a lot of people don't know how to tell people stuff.

• 1:02:33Speaker 01

No, but she told me, she asked me why she never did, and I was just like, because at the time, you wasn't ready. Now, she ready, it's different. And I was, actually, when I was saying what she was then, and I was giving her flowers for who she was now. And I, I don't know if part of her was like, yeah, now you gonna give her flowers. But I meant that, because I be seeing y'all when y'all young, and to see you develop into the artist, you understand, Big Bro is always proud. I have nothing but love for every last single one of my brothers and sisters. You can always ask me for anything, I will give you advice, I'm always here.

• 1:03:10Keke Palmer?

But some people ask and people don't tell them, they don't never know. You know, or some people don't, you know what I mean? So I thought it was cool that, whether it was, however it was received, I know you said it with love.

• 1:03:18Speaker 01

And I said it too, that you have blossomed into this thing, and now you ready, because she is. And I, I love Tiff, and I think, you know, we haven't seen the best of her yet. I think she has so much more to give, and I'm proud of her. Keep getting your checks, mama.

• 1:03:32Keke Palmer?

Period. I love you, you're amazing, thank you for giving me so much of your time.

• 1:03:35Speaker 01

Now you're gonna get me beat up by the whole black community, god damn. Who do we pick on the light-skinned ovie?

• 1:03:41Keke Palmer?

You said light-skinned ovie because you found out that Lisa Landry is Jack Hay.

• 1:03:45Speaker 01

I'ma go with the Winslow mother.

• 1:03:48Keke Palmer?

She lost her show, and now she's gotta go.

• 1:03:51Speaker 01

I'm sorry, well, she just, she's lost a lot, you know?

• 1:03:54Keke Palmer?

But you know what, she's sugar mama on Proud Family.

• 1:03:57Speaker 01

Yeah, you know, she gotta go.

• 1:04:03Speaker 01

  I'm sorry.

• 1:04:08Speaker 01

You asking me these hard questions. All right, one gotta go, I'm gonna ask you one.

• 1:04:13Keke Palmer?

  Okay, I'm excited.

• 1:04:16Speaker 01

Kenan, Damon, Kim, Sean, Marlon, one of them gotta go.

• 1:04:24Speaker 01

Oh, oh! We'll be back when you see the Marlon Wayans podcast. You gonna, I'ma let you chew on that for a couple of years.

• 1:04:32Keke Palmer?

  Because that's really.

• 1:04:34Speaker 01

I'ma, now you know how I feel when you ask me all these damn questions.

• 1:04:37Keke Palmer?

Because how could you say one's gotta go?

• 1:04:39Speaker 01

You know what I'm saying? Because I be tell you right now.

• 1:04:46Speaker 01

I'd be dead as hell to my eyes. I'm like, Marlon gotta go.

• 1:04:49Keke Palmer?

Marlon's not going anywhere. Marlon, you're my favorite.

• 1:04:51Speaker 01

Yeah, but I'm not my favorite. I gotta go.

• 1:04:56Keke Palmer?

  All right, y'all.

• 1:04:59Speaker 01

Did I just commit suicide on you?

• 1:05:05Keke Palmer?

That was so much more than jokes, y'all. Marlon knows comedy isn't just about making people laugh, but it's about surviving, healing, and telling the truth even when it's uncomfortable. And we can all try to find the light in the hard times. Laughter has certainly gotten me through so much in my life, and I know I'm not alone in that. And Marlon's movies, in honesty, I mean, honestly, his whole family have been making me laugh since I was a kid. From "In Living Color" to "White Chicks", to "Haunted House", the Wayans have been a constant source of joy for me. So having Marlon here today wasn't just special, it was personal, y'all. Love you. And you know it's your girl.
