• 1:31Speaker 01

  We were just in Nashville.

• 1:34Theo Von?

Let's start there. We good, Zach?

• 1:35Speaker 01

  Yeah. Cool beans.

• 1:38Theo Von?

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I saw you were just in Nashville.

• 1:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:40Theo Von?

  Had you been there before?

• 1:41Speaker 01

Yeah, once, kind of exploring. I was doing a movie called Bones and all. I was trying to do research.

• 1:45Theo Von?

Oh, yeah. It's my producer's favorite.

• 1:47Speaker 01

  No way.

• 1:47Theo Von?

Yeah, I haven't seen it yet. Yep, that guy, Zach, is his name. And he loves it. Yeah, he really loves it.

• 1:52Speaker 01

No way. So I had wandered there. And this time got a better sense of it. It's a great city, huh?

• 1:58Theo Von?

Yeah, it's a good place. It's like a little city. It's like a little city, kind of like a fancy little city. It's almost like the JonBenet of cities.

• 2:07Speaker 01

  Of cities.

• 2:08Theo Von?

Day, you know, look at this outfit, kinda, you know, but dangerous at the same, but it has like, kind of like an element of like mystery, kind of, that's a kind of a weird example.

• 2:17Speaker 01

No, but you're not, are you from there?

• 2:18Theo Von?

No, I'm from Louisiana, but, but Nashville, here's what it is, it's safe, it's nice, people are friendly. Um, you can't cheat on your wife there, so it's not.

• 2:27Speaker 01

  Cause the city's too small.

• 2:28Theo Von?

  Too small.

• 2:29Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:29Theo Von?

You couldn't take your wife or spouse or significant other. Um, you couldn't even, yeah, like, and you couldn't take them to dinner or something and not see somebody that would know.

• 2:39Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 2:39Theo Von?

One of you or them, so it's.

• 2:40Speaker 01

  There's like fourteen people?

• 2:42Theo Von?

  Yeah, it's, well, there's just, there's enough people, but there's a, it's a, this house is a little gossipy.

• 2:46Speaker 01

  Uh huh, okay.

• 2:47Theo Von?

So there's a lot of like, it's not a really an adultery city, it's not a city that's, adultery's not like a trademark of the city, probably.

• 2:53Speaker 01

Is it, how's it different from New Orleans?

• 2:55Theo Von?

New Orleans is a little bit more dangerous, I think, you know, and better, probably better food, to be honest.

• 3:01Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 3:01Theo Von?

I think you have to have crime to have good food, that's kind of how I feel.

• 3:05Speaker 01

That's, I've never heard that MO.

• 3:06Theo Von?

  Really?

• 3:07Speaker 01

Yeah, that's interesting. You ever had, um, you ever had that, uh, that Yakim in New Orleans?

• 3:12Theo Von?

That Yakim? Is it, it's not a drug, is it?

• 3:15Speaker 01

  No, no, no.

• 3:16Theo Von?

Okay. Cause I've had that. I haven't had, I haven't had the edible version, no. Oh, this thing.

• 3:22Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.

• 3:24Theo Von?

  Oh, this Vietnamese food?

• 3:25Speaker 01

I don't think so, I was watching top five, um, like, top five New Orleans street foods.

• 3:31Theo Von?

  That Yakim, homie.

• 3:32Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 3:33Theo Von?

  Wow.

• 3:34Speaker 01

That's a deep cut right there.

• 3:35Theo Von?

It is a very deep cut, I thought it came in a small baggie. Yeah, I haven't had this, bro, I have not had this. But, you know, New Orleans has one of the largest, uh, Vietnamese populations.

• 3:45Speaker 01

Really, in the country? I did not know that, I've never been to NOLA.

• 3:47Theo Von?

  I think so, you haven't?

• 3:48Speaker 01

  Never.

• 3:48Theo Von?

  Oh, man.

• 3:49Speaker 01

And a lot of stuff shoots there, for some reason, I just haven't, haven't been there before. Um, yeah.

• 3:54Theo Von?

  It's mythical.

• 3:54Speaker 01

You know, Nashville reminded me of Austin a little bit, you know, Sixth Street?

• 3:57Theo Von?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 3:58Speaker 01

  That promenade a little bit?

• 3:59Theo Von?

  Yeah, yeah, for sure.

• 3:59Speaker 01

  Sort of, yeah, but.

• 4:00Theo Von?

Yeah, yeah, that Broadway, that area, that area is really interesting down there. What else about Nashville that I really like, um?

• 4:07Speaker 01

You go to the soccer games ever, Nashville SC?

• 4:09Theo Von?

I haven't been to that, I go to watch Lipscomb College, they play soccer there.

• 4:12Speaker 01

  What?

• 4:12Theo Von?

  At Lipscomb College.

• 4:14Speaker 01

  No way.

• 4:14Theo Von?

It's a college, and, uh, they have soccer, and so I'll go watch some of their games.

• 4:18Speaker 01

  What's their student body population?

• 4:20Theo Von?

It's a good question, pull it up, Lipscomb College.

• 4:22Speaker 01

  Let's see.

• 4:23Theo Von?

It's one of those colleges that right next to it has the high school also and then the children's school or whatever.

• 4:29Speaker 01

So it's like you can go there from K to senior year of college?

• 4:32Theo Von?

Yeah, you could go from like K to 40.

• 4:34Speaker 01

  Forty eight hundred students?

• 4:36Theo Von?

Okay, but their soccer team was ranked, um, has been ranked in the top 25 the past few years.

• 4:41Speaker 01

So you love, like, you're a diehard, you know, season ticket holder. You're there all the time.

• 4:46Theo Von?

No, some of them, I'll text my neighbor who's a coach, you're like, hey, you might have a pop by.

• 4:49Speaker 01

Might just pop by and you're in there, cool.

• 4:50Theo Von?

And he'll be on the field, he'll be like, yeah, sure, pull up.

• 4:52Speaker 01

You're like, do you get like the McConaughey UT pass? You can go wherever you want?

• 4:55Theo Von?

Um, it's, there's not a lot of bleachers, so it's pretty.

• 4:58Speaker 01

You're basically on the field all the time. I was amazed, I was at that, that UT Georgia game, McConaughey gets full, he gets full license.

• 5:05Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 5:05Speaker 01

He could do whatever he wants. Cause I already had a field pass, I thought I was pretty.

• 5:09Theo Von?

  Right.

• 5:09Speaker 01

You know, high level in some way. He's like with the coach, he's calling plays.

• 5:14Theo Von?

  He's coaching, he's taping a guy up.

• 5:16Speaker 01

  Taping a guy up.

• 5:17Theo Von?

He's like, you're gonna be alright.

• 5:18Speaker 01

He's living the experience, you know? I got a buddy who's on the Nashville soccer team, his name's Alex Mule.

• 5:23Theo Von?

Oh, really? Let's pull him up. Let me, let's give him some shine, cause I need to go watch him. You think if I hit him up, he would invite him to a game?

• 5:28Speaker 01

Absolutely, and the, the games are often sold out, you know, I grew up with this guy, um.

• 5:33Theo Von?

  Alex Mule?

• 5:34Speaker 01

Yeah, but he was always, um, M-M-U-I-L, that's the bane of his life, man.

• 5:38Theo Von?

Oh, yeah, people that can't spell Mule, yeah.

• 5:40Speaker 01

This is amazing, man. I wish this is like, this is what AI is gonna be in 20 years, just say it and it pops up.

• 5:45Theo Von?

Oh, as we're talking, the computer follows?

• 5:47Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, oh, yeah, oh, yeah.

• 5:49Theo Von?

Yeah, I never thought about that.

• 5:50Speaker 01

Have you tried, um, do you use the?

• 5:53Theo Von?

  VR?

• 5:53Speaker 01

  The Vision?

• 5:54Theo Von?

  Oculus, that kinda thing?

• 5:55Speaker 01

No, no, they're the, well Oculus too, I guess, but the AirPod.

• 5:58Theo Von?

What do you mean, like, Blue Blockers or something?

• 6:00Speaker 01

  The Vision Pro.

• 6:01Theo Von?

  Vision Pro, what is it?

• 6:02Speaker 01

  The Apple helmet.

• 6:04Theo Von?

But tell me about Mule, I just wanna.

• 6:05Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, my bad.

• 6:06Theo Von?

So you played ball with him growing up?

• 6:07Speaker 01

I played ball with him growing up and he was just gifted, you know? It's tough, you know, you could play like, it's like that Last Dance Chicago Bulls documentary, some of those guys will be partying all night and then they'll, then they'll drop, like Dennis Rodman, he'll drop 40, you know, it's like. I could work my ass off. If you don't have the gift of physical talent of athleticism, you're cooked.

• 6:25Theo Von?

Yeah, you're done, dude. Yeah, some people got that damn, you got a damn foot Mozart out there. I don't have that.

• 6:30Speaker 01

Yeah, Alex Mule is a foot Mozart.

• 6:31Theo Von?

  Really?

• 6:32Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 6:32Theo Von?

  Oh, that's fire.

• 6:33Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 6:33Theo Von?

Yeah, I gotta go check him out, man. I haven't been to see a game. It's unfortunate. I did get to go see Vanderbilt, which is the college that's, that's the SEC college that's actually in Nashville.

• 6:43Speaker 01

  That's what I visited. Yeah.

• 6:44Theo Von?

  Oh, really?

• 6:44Speaker 01

  I was at Vanderbilt.

• 6:45Theo Von?

Oh, well, yeah, I saw a video of you out there.

• 6:47Speaker 01

Uh, you know, I never had that American college experience. You know, I went to Columbia for a second. I went to NYU, so I'm jealous of that. But Vanderbilt, respected Vanderbilt, it didn't feel like UT or, it didn't feel like it had a huge campus or a huge.

• 6:59Theo Von?

  No, it's a smaller, it's a smaller energy.

• 7:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:01Theo Von?

But we went to one game this year. They played Alabama and they beat, they upset Alabama.

• 7:05Speaker 01

  So that was huge.

• 7:06Theo Von?

  It was crazy.

• 7:07Speaker 01

Because usually their football program's not that good.

• 7:09Theo Von?

  It's not.

• 7:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:09Theo Von?

  And they know that.

• 7:10Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 7:11Theo Von?

  We're not, it's not a secret.

• 7:12Speaker 01

No, no, you gotta keep keeping their place.

• 7:14Theo Von?

But that was the game they won. And look, they didn't even, it was like all these lawyers and attorneys like tearing down the goalposts.

• 7:19Speaker 01

  No way.

• 7:20Theo Von?

They even had, they had a, um, there we are after the game. We actually, we, uh...

• 7:24Speaker 01

Is it a big law program?

• 7:25Theo Von?

Carl Lee is their coach and he's an awesome guy. I mean, he's a class act.

• 7:30Speaker 01

  He just gets smoked, dude.

• 7:31Theo Von?

  But we got to, yeah.

• 7:32Speaker 01

There you are. Dude, what are you doing on the field, dude?

• 7:37Theo Von?

Bro, shouldn't have been out there.

• 7:38Speaker 01

You almost, you almost ran that person over.

• 7:39Theo Von?

  Hey, bro.

• 7:40Speaker 01

  That's amazing.

• 7:41Theo Von?

Put on a helmet, girl. That was a girl that should not have been.

• 7:44Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, you almost, you almost ran her over.

• 7:45Theo Von?

Yeah, she shouldn't be playing wide out, you know? It's just different. Um, but no, it's a, what's it like there? It's, um, oh, after the game, so they had like engineers like, how should we take this down? And then there's just drunk kids like, just rip it down.

• 7:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:59Theo Von?

And then they carried it down Broadway, which is like the street you were talking about, the goalpost, because they'd never had it happen.

• 8:04Speaker 01

Those kids had never broken a law in their life.

• 8:05Theo Von?

Yeah. They even tried to valet park the goalpost at like a restaurant. Yeah.

• 8:09Speaker 01

Is it a fancy, like an expensive fancy type school?

• 8:12Theo Von?

I mean, I don't think, it's a lot of, it's a lot of kids that have never played probably Dyson and Alley, I would say that. So I would say it's, you know, probably pretty decent, you know?

• 8:20Speaker 01

  Man, that's pretty crazy, huh?

• 8:23Theo Von?

But it's a, it is a really cool, it's a cool program, man.

• 8:25Speaker 01

I feel like I could see three stadiums from my hotel. I feel like I could see the Vanderbilt one, the Tennessee Titans one, and Nissan Stadium. Shout out Nissan.

• 8:32Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 8:33Speaker 01

Is Nissan a big Tennessee car manufacturer?

• 8:35Theo Von?

That's a good question. I don't think so. It sounds, uh, Nissan?

• 8:39Speaker 02

  It's Japan, Japanese.

• 8:40Speaker 01

  It's Japanese. Huh.

• 8:43Theo Von?

Um, dude, thanks for coming in, Timothy. I appreciate it, man.

• 8:46Speaker 01

Man, thank you. You know, um, I, uh, not with the shameless plug, but I got this movie A Complete Unknown coming out on Christmas Day. Yeah. Did you actually see it?

• 8:55Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 8:55Speaker 01

Fantastic, man. So I'm excited that we can actually talk about it. And I was, uh, very much in the time period of the movie the whole time and trying to stay without being a dick, you know, within the bounds of the character. But somebody in the hair and makeup trailer at the end of the day, they would play this podcast, you know, which is how I discovered it. And particularly the, uh, the episodes with the garbage man and sort of like the real life episodes, the lunch lady, the coroner.

• 9:16Theo Von?

Wayne, yeah, Wayne, the garbage man. He's doing good.

• 9:19Speaker 01

Those were, those are like awesome episodes, you know, and sort of like worldviews that I wouldn't get otherwise, you know? And, uh,

• 9:27Theo Von?

And you're from New York, right?

• 9:28Speaker 01

I'm from New York, so garbage man, he totally recontextualized that for me.

• 9:31Theo Von?

Bro, he did a great job. Cause they used to have, um, they used to have,

• 9:34Speaker 01

I used to hate them, you know? Yeah, cause you think they're taking their time.

• 9:38Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.

• 9:40Speaker 01

And I realized how tough that job is. I mean, he was like throwing, throwing dogs in the back of the, I mean, that story is, you remember that?

• 9:46Theo Von?

There's a lot of, yeah, a lot of, yeah, missing formerly living things started to disappear.

• 9:53Speaker 01

In the back of the, back of the,

• 9:55Theo Von?

Well, they used to have incinerators in the buildings. That's what was craziest.

• 9:58Speaker 01

  Right, right.

• 9:59Theo Von?

So that the people would put their trash, it would hit the incinerator and then they would just have, I mean, this is like six years, seven years ago, I think, but they would just have, um, soot in barrels, you know, or in, uh, cans on the side of the street. And then they started getting bags, but he said, yeah, there's been times where a lot of things have shown up. But thank you, man, for checking it out.

• 10:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:16Theo Von?

Or for just hearing it on accident.

• 10:17Speaker 01

Hearing it on accident, loving it. And, um, and I'm so happy you saw this movie. And this is like, um, you know, I hope this doesn't like a shameless self plug, but,

• 10:24Theo Von?

No, it's not at all. Look, man, we're happy that you're here and it's interesting.

• 10:28Speaker 01

  Yeah, I appreciate it.

• 10:29Theo Von?

And you get to do a biopic or biopic, how do they say it?

• 10:31Speaker 01

Still don't know, man. Biopic sounds like a medical procedure.

• 10:34Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 10:36Speaker 01

You know, that sounds like someone, you know, is inspecting your lungs to see if you played the role the right way. I like biopic. Biopic sounds fancier.

• 10:43Theo Von?

Yeah, biopic does sound fancy. I think that too. Yeah, biopic. Was it like, so let me think about a question like that. Just so people know, this is about a four or five year period in Bob Dylan's life.

• 10:54Speaker 01

This is a period, yeah, four or five year period in the early Bob Dylan's life. And I'm sure a lot of people listening to your program are already fans of Bob Dylan's, but I'm sure a lot aren't because to my generation, you know.

• 11:03Theo Von?

Yeah, people, some people will know.

• 11:04Speaker 01

So I don't know. And he's really one of the most fantastic American artists of all time and has influenced our culture in so many deep ways. And it's just, you know, I grew up on, on Kid Cudi and hip hop and that was really my, you know, my, my, my passion. And then somewhere in my twenties, because this movie I was working on, I became obsessed with this, this man, Bob Dylan, who's absolutely, I could just speak about him endlessly. And, you know, I would love if people saw this movie and even if they got a passing interest, discover the world of Bob Dylan. I feel like we get to be a bridge or a gateway to this, to this guy. And I hope this isn't one of your episodes where you got like someone, you know, like one of the ones people skip because it's like a person plugin. So you know what

• 11:47Speaker 01

I'm saying? Like a, like a, I don't want to use that word celebrity, but like, you know, because my favorite episodes of yours are.

• 11:52Theo Von?

Oh, like a fancy, like a fancier person hypothetically.

• 11:55Speaker 01

No, I don't mean it like that, but just like, I like, like I said, I like the ones that.

• 11:59Theo Von?

Yeah, we don't have like a lot of celebrities on.

• 12:00Speaker 01

You know what I'm saying? Yeah, I never really use that word, but um.

• 12:02Theo Von?

No, that's okay. No, no, I don't think so. Look, man, I think.

• 12:06Speaker 01

I feel like this part of the job is that though, because when I'm, when I'm working, I'm really very much in it. You know what I mean? And then here, anyway.

• 12:13Theo Von?

Yeah, actors get kind of a weird rap though, because then they also have to be celebrities.

• 12:16Speaker 01

In some way, yeah, in some way. And, uh, well, well, well, if you wanna, if you want to get your movie out, you, there's, there's only a limit of how.

• 12:27Speaker 01

Pretentious in some way, you know, whatever, you know, I want, I want this, especially this movie. I believe in this movie and I believe in this man. He's a tremendous artist, so I wanna, I want to, you know, get it out there.

• 12:39Theo Von?

Yeah, no, I don't think that's, man, I think that, like, you did the movie with the young man with drug addiction with Steve Carell's son.

• 12:46Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah, Beautiful Boy, yeah.

• 12:47Theo Von?

  Which was awesome, man.

• 12:48Speaker 01

Yeah, I know you struggle with that a little bit, yeah.

• 12:51Theo Von?

Yeah, man, and so many people have, and it's like, um, so, I don't think there's any doubt in people's mind about your ability to, um, be a bridge between whether it be a sto-, you know, a story or a person to a new generation or to, um, uh, new listeners or, or people kind of imbibing.

• 13:13Speaker 01

And I appreciate you bringing up Beautiful Boy, and I feel like you're doing the exact same thing, not to just blow smoke up each other's ass, but I feel like when you...

• 13:19Theo Von?

Oh, we're a couple of naughty Native Americans right here.

• 13:21Speaker 01

Come on, come on. Yeah, boy. Yeah, yeah, oh, yeah, if you're not, if you're listening to this and not watching this, that we're fully, the bottom half of our bodies are...

• 13:28Theo Von?

We're out here boofing, huh? It's getting spicy out here.

• 13:31Speaker 01

I don't even know what that means.

• 13:32Theo Von?

  Okay, I don't either.

• 13:32Speaker 01

I don't even know what that means.

• 13:33Theo Von?

  Take that out.

• 13:34Speaker 01

But, um, no, but, uh, but, uh, yeah, 'cause I know you speak on it too, and you probably empower people, you know, that, uh, otherwise would be, um, doing some naughty stuff.

• 13:44Theo Von?

Yeah, people wanna hear us, people wanna see it, people wanna see like a little bit of a journey that they can relate to or hear about it.

• 13:48Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly.

• 13:49Theo Von?

Um, so about the character, like, so Bob Dylan has like such a famous, 'cause, yeah, a lot of younger generation might not know about him, you know?

• 13:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:57Theo Von?

And, um, a, a lot of, um, he has such like a, uh-huh, um...

• 14:03Speaker 01

That's a good Bob Dylan, man.

• 14:04Theo Von?

  Was it?

• 14:04Speaker 01

  Yeah, that was good.

• 14:05Theo Von?

How did you do, when you first decided, 'cause I'm sure you had to practice it in your room or something, like, tell me about the first time.

• 14:10Speaker 01

That was super gradual, can't do it with people that are fans, 'cause people that are fans of Bob Dylan will go, they'll all tell you you got it wrong. That's the trouble with playing someone so famous and beloved, everyone's got an opinion about him.

• 14:19Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 14:20Speaker 01

So, you gotta put the blinders on and just kinda do it around people that, um, you know. Look, man, I'm usually not that prick actor who's like obliging his friends or whatever to listen to the, the character he's working on, but this is the one time I did that.

• 14:33Theo Von?

Oh, I think you have to do that.

• 14:34Speaker 01

  Yeah, I had to, man.

• 14:35Theo Von?

'Cause, yeah, you don't wanna get out there and do a bad job of it.

• 14:37Speaker 01

Exactly, man, this, this would've been blasphemous, I would've gotten... Killed.

• 14:42Theo Von?

  I mean.

• 14:42Speaker 01

  I could still get killed.

• 14:43Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 14:44Speaker 01

But now it seems like, you know, getting a little bit of, getting a little bit of love, you know what I'm saying?

• 14:47Theo Von?

  You might be back.

• 14:48Speaker 01

  A little bit of that.

• 14:49Theo Von?

Hey, snipers down, lay down, snipers, yeah. Um, but was there a moment where you tried that, where you actually tried it?

• 14:55Speaker 01

Yes, very gradually, um, I had, I, I had to, there's a great dialect coach named Tim Monich, you know, you could work with people that are like experts in this field and they'll tell you.

• 15:03Theo Von?

  Oh, really?

• 15:04Speaker 01

You had to go about it. He, this man, Tim Monich, invented dialect coaching. He came up with it.

• 15:08Theo Von?

  Tim Monich?

• 15:08Speaker 01

  Tim Monich, T I M, M O N I C H. He's worked with Leonardo DiCaprio, he's worked with everyone, you know.

• 15:15Theo Von?

Oh, so he's a famous, um.

• 15:17Speaker 01

Dialect coach. Man, I've never looked him up before. Yeah.

• 15:20Theo Von?

Tim Monich, there he is right there. Okay, is that the man?

• 15:22Speaker 01

Yeah, there I, there I am with him. I got in trouble anyway.

• 15:26Theo Von?

Oh, you did? What happened to you?

• 15:27Speaker 01

I got in trouble because the strike had just hit and I was just hanging out with him and, and I didn't really get in trouble. People, people, uh.

• 15:32Theo Von?

  Oh, people were saying.

• 15:33Speaker 01

People thought I was a scab and I was working with him.

• 15:35Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 15:36Speaker 01

  But, um, he's a.

• 15:37Theo Von?

  Crossing lisp lines or whatever?

• 15:40Speaker 01

  You're right, dude. You're right. You're right.

• 15:43Theo Von?

  That's crazy.

• 15:44Speaker 01

That's the only, only union where you'd be crossing the picket line by working on your tongue.

• 15:49Theo Von?

  Yeah, that's crazy.

• 15:50Speaker 01

Tom Sibley, that was a real thing, dude.

• 15:52Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah, really?

• 15:53Speaker 01

Scab, stop working on the accent.

• 15:54Theo Von?

  How dare you learn Spanish?

• 15:56Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly.

• 15:57Theo Von?

  That's crazy. Wow.

• 15:59Speaker 01

Man, next time I'll call you. Cause actually when you put it like that, it's like, what are you supposed to do? You know, like, and I wasn't working with him, I was hanging out, you know? We went to a shitty, uh, super shitty, um, it's bleak, man. Like the way Bob Dylan, when he came up, there was like all these cafes in downtown New York and the music. And now I went, I was trying to find the folk scene in modern day Manhattan. It was brutal.

• 16:18Theo Von?

Oh, I think in Manhattan probably, maybe like in the, somewhere in the Village probably, right?

• 16:21Speaker 01

Yeah, but it was brutal. I mean, I went to, I went to Cafe Wa where Bob Dylan came up and, uh, it's just like Aerosmith covers now. So some guy goes, "Trevor!", and you're like, oh, man, oh, yeah. This is not how it was.

• 16:33Theo Von?

It's just a, and it's like a small Aeropostale in the back, kind of.

• 16:36Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly.

• 16:38Theo Von?

Yeah, that's kind of a bummer. Um, did you have to meet Bob to get into this?

• 16:41Speaker 01

I never got the chance to meet him.

• 16:43Theo Von?

  Not yet at all?

• 16:43Speaker 01

Oh, he's super reclusive, yeah. He's elusive and reclusive.

• 16:46Theo Von?

  He's that reclusive?

• 16:47Speaker 01

Yeah, we, I don't know if he'll ever see the movie, yeah. He's a, he did this, uh, X post, I've been taught to say, it's not tweet anymore, I guess, fucking X post. But, uh, that he did it like three days ago, you know, and, um, uh, that was more than, he, he, he, uh...

• 17:01Theo Von?

There's a movie about me opening soon called A Complete Unknown. Um, Timothy Chalamet is starring in the lead role. Timmy's a brilliant, Timmy is a brilliant actor. I kind of respect it though. Nice. Honoring your youth.

• 17:13Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Timmy's my twelve-year-old expression, dude.

• 17:17Theo Von?

Timmy's a brilliant actor, so I'm sure he's gonna be a completely believable as me, or a younger me, or some other me. The film's taken from Elijah Wald's Dylan Goes Electric, a book that came out in 2015. It's a fantastic retelling of events from the early sixties that led up to the fiasco at Newport. After you've seen the movie, read the book. Oh, it's nice.

• 17:35Speaker 01

  Super sweet. And then...

• 17:37Theo Von?

So do you even talk to him on the phone or anything yet?

• 17:39Speaker 01

No, nothing. I got, never got the chance to talk to him, yeah. I like that you pointed out the Timmy. I tried, you know, when I was nineteen, twenty, I was, you know, I was evolving into Timothy.

• 17:46Theo Von?

You shed your, shed some letters.

• 17:48Speaker 01

Exactly, shed some, add some letters. Add some letters from Timmy to Timothy.

• 17:51Theo Von?

Yeah, I thought you were going Tim, sorry.

• 17:53Speaker 01

  Tim would be, you know...

• 17:54Theo Von?

  You're going Timothy.

• 17:55Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Tim, like you said.

• 17:56Theo Von?

  From Timmy to Timothy.

• 17:57Speaker 01

  Yeah, forties, fifties, couple ex-wives.

• 17:59Theo Von?

  Then you go Tim.

• 17:59Speaker 01

Then you go Tim, you know, uh, you know, I'm like, you know, like mowing my lawn all day.

• 18:06Theo Von?

  Yeah, hey, Tim.

• 18:08Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 18:08Theo Von?

  Missed a spot.

• 18:09Speaker 01

  Missed a spot, you know.

• 18:11Theo Von?

You're like, oh, there's a bird's nest there, calm down, you know?

• 18:13Speaker 01

Sort of a disgruntled expression on my face watching my kids' sports games.

• 18:17Theo Von?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 18:17Speaker 01

Cause they're not playing to the level that I would say.

• 18:20Theo Von?

  At a swim meet, too.

• 18:20Speaker 01

  At a swim meet.

• 18:21Theo Von?

Swim meet's the worst because you can't even talk to the person next to you because it echoes so much in the room.

• 18:25Speaker 01

I'm nervous to a swim meet in my life.

• 18:26Theo Von?

Even if you whisper a little, the people hear it.

• 18:29Speaker 01

  It travels.

• 18:29Theo Von?

  Yes.

• 18:29Speaker 01

  It travels.

• 18:30Theo Von?

  Oh, you cannot gossip.

• 18:31Speaker 01

How many swim meets? Do you go to Lipscomb College swim meet?

• 18:33Theo Von?

I mean, I don't go to the, I did it, yeah, I did it.

• 18:36Speaker 01

  You gotta be careful, dude.

• 18:36Theo Von?

Yeah, I do, you're right. And it is, and I definitely watch from my car with binoculars, so it's not too creepy.

• 18:41Speaker 01

It's normal. It's totally normal. So the fact you've been doing it since your early twenties means that, you know.

• 18:46Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 18:47Speaker 01

  It's cool.

• 18:47Theo Von?

  I've got a grandfather in.

• 18:48Speaker 01

  Your grandfather in.

• 18:49Theo Von?

  That guy's not a pedophile. He's a, he's an artist.

• 18:51Speaker 01

He's an artist and, and this show happened, you know, this show sprouted in this period of you doing that.

• 18:57Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 18:57Speaker 01

So how can you fault the process? The proof's in the pudding.

• 18:59Theo Von?

Yeah, the guy, how do you expect him not to rehearse his own life?

• 19:04Theo Von?

But yeah, um, yeah, you can't, that's the thing. You just can't gossip at a swim meet, man.

• 19:08Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 19:08Theo Von?

  What are we talking about?

• 19:09Speaker 01

I don't know. I've never been to a swim meet. You know, that's a very non, you know, like there's four pools in New York City.

• 19:14Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 19:15Speaker 01

  You know what I mean?

• 19:15Theo Von?

  That's true.

• 19:16Speaker 01

We don't have swim meets, but we have, um.

• 19:19Theo Von?

  What do you guys have?

• 19:19Speaker 01

We play dice in the alleys, like you were saying before. No, I'm kidding. But, uh, you know, I was thinking about this the other day, like my high school, they wouldn't let us out for lunch. Would they let you out for lunch or no?

• 19:27Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 19:27Speaker 01

You could do whatever you wanted at lunch. They didn't let us out. I feel like my skin tone from when I went into high school, by the time I got out, I looked sickly. I haven't recovered.

• 19:35Theo Von?

Oh, it got very, you got kind of like, yeah, very, um.

• 19:37Speaker 01

  Anemic.

• 19:38Theo Von?

Yep, anemic. I'm sure. What else is it called? Kind of Boo Radley-esque?

• 19:41Speaker 01

  Exactly, exactly, exactly, you know.

• 19:44Theo Von?

Yeah, because they should give you at least an hour in the sun. They give it to inmates.

• 19:48Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 19:49Theo Von?

And just because I'm learning social studies, I don't get it?

• 19:50Speaker 01

I don't get it. Exactly. And then I'd be in the basement doing, just acting all day.

• 19:53Theo Von?

Just because I'm learning fucking Voltaire, I don't get forty minutes in the sun?

• 19:56Speaker 01

Forty minutes in the sun, nothing.

• 19:57Theo Von?

A raisin got in the sun.

• 19:59Speaker 01

  Oh, hey.

• 19:59Theo Von?

  I don't.

• 20:00Speaker 01

Hey, that's a good play. And I was right there, man. Denzel Washington, baby.

• 20:03Theo Von?

I will accept that. I will accept that.

• 20:05Speaker 01

I heard you're a big, um, play guy.

• 20:08Theo Von?

  Really?

• 20:09Speaker 01

  No.

• 20:09Theo Von?

Oh, thanks. I was like, God, I don't want that going around.

• 20:13Speaker 01

Hey, man, that would, listen, that's the subversive. No one, no one would expect it.

• 20:17Theo Von?

That's, uh, that's very low key, dude.

• 20:20Speaker 01

  Is there theater in Nashville?

• 20:21Theo Von?

  Yeah, there's.

• 20:21Speaker 01

  There's gotta be.

• 20:22Theo Von?

There is a theater program. That's a good question. I grew up in Louisiana. We didn't, we had some theater. We just did like.

• 20:26Speaker 01

Did you ever do theater growing up?

• 20:27Theo Von?

Yeah, I did. I did. Well, it was just called Drama Club or whatever. And it was a lot of people who was, it was a lot of people I think that were, wanted to be actors and then a lot of people that just were kind of like.

• 20:36Speaker 01

  The outsiders.

• 20:37Theo Von?

  Yeah, outsiders.

• 20:38Speaker 01

I went to the high school, it was the opposite. The drama kids were the.

• 20:40Theo Von?

  Oh, the cool kids?

• 20:41Speaker 01

Yeah, and the, and the basketball kids were like, there was like four of them.

• 20:45Theo Von?

Bro, that's gotta be interesting because a lot of people don't get that opportunity.

• 20:48Speaker 01

No, it skewed my perception of the real world because then I got to Columbia and I was like, oh shit, the value system is totally different, you know? But actually, in a serious way, it kind of motivated me to go pursue my acting even harder. But did you ever think about acting or?

• 20:59Theo Von?

You're like, what's the exchange rate on this Hamlet scene I have?

• 21:01Speaker 01

  Exactly, exactly, exactly.

• 21:04Theo Von?

Uh, yeah, I did just some stuff at school, but I would always mess it up. Like we did like Sherlock Holmes or something. And I was like Watson or whatever, his buddy or whatever.

• 21:12Speaker 01

  Okay, who was Sherlock?

• 21:13Theo Von?

His man crush, whatever. And our, our guy was very like progressive. So he tried to make it, there to be like this small like lover scene or, or just like some ambiance between Sherlock and Watson.

• 21:24Speaker 01

  You didn't go for it?

• 21:25Theo Von?

I don't know if I went for it or not. I was like thirteen.

• 21:27Speaker 01

You gotta be bold dude, you gotta go out there man. You gotta be bold. You gotta be bold, you would have earned the respect of all your classmates. Or actually, I don't know where you're from, maybe.

• 21:32Theo Von?

Yeah, who knows, who knows, could have gone either way. But um, but yeah, there was this definitely kind of romantic where they're looking for the clues and they're kind of finding each other. That's what the guy said. And I was like, this seems like insane.

• 21:43Speaker 01

  But you didn't do it?

• 21:45Theo Von?

I, I tried my best. But then I remember I got, the first night I got out there on stage, I took on this Latino accent for some reason.

• 21:51Speaker 01

That's a strong choice, man. It's all about strong choices.

• 21:52Theo Von?

And nobody knew it was coming.

• 21:53Speaker 01

  Perfect.

• 21:54Theo Von?

And I was like, what's up Holmes, you know?

• 21:55Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 21:56Theo Von?

And then um, so yeah, that was just, and that's when I realized I, it was tough for me to be in some ensemble things. I just wanted to be by myself, you know, like that kind of thing.

• 22:04Speaker 01

And you found, this, I mean, this was where it came in, right?

• 22:06Theo Von?

Yeah, that's where stand up came in.

• 22:07Speaker 01

Would you do a movie uh, uh, if it came, came your way?

• 22:10Theo Von?

Um, if I've got to make it.

• 22:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:12Theo Von?

  Myself, I think.

• 22:13Speaker 01

Okay, alright. You went, you don't want to be slotted into something.

• 22:15Theo Von?

I don't think so. I just am super protective about myself for some reason, which may seem kind of weird, I don't know.

• 22:20Speaker 01

For some reason, for some reason you had me on.

• 22:22Theo Von?

God, that was a bad choice.

• 22:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 22:25Theo Von?

  No, a good choice dude.

• 22:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:26Theo Von?

Um, who, so in New York, when you were a kid, like who's your best friend?

• 22:30Speaker 01

  Best friend growing up?

• 22:34Speaker 01

Nobody, man. I was always pursuing acting dude.

• 22:36Theo Von?

  Were you really?

• 22:36Speaker 01

I was born, I was bred at Warner Brothers Studios in a, in a little embryo fluid.

• 22:40Theo Von?

  It was just like that?

• 22:41Speaker 01

Yeah, nah, man, you know, probably Brett Goldstein, you know.

• 22:45Theo Von?

A guy, kid in your building or something from school?

• 22:46Speaker 01

No, he was a kid on the Upper West Side and my older sister was friends with, with his older sister, Brenna. And uh, just, I think they still live there, Greg and Bess, those are his parents.

• 22:56Theo Von?

  Mm-hmm.

• 22:56Speaker 01

And Brett, you know, that was my whole friend group. Then they all, my whole friend group went to this school called Computer School. And then I went to a school called Booker T. Washington, so I lost my, I lost my friend group there.

• 23:04Theo Von?

  Hmm.

• 23:05Speaker 01

  But um.

• 23:06Theo Von?

And you have a roommate now?

• 23:07Speaker 01

  No.

• 23:08Theo Von?

  You don't?

• 23:08Speaker 01

Thank God, man. That's like more than, sorry, no, I mean, but fucking that's more than anything. That's what Jezzle Nick says on Netflix. He says, you really made it when you don't have a roommate anymore.

• 23:17Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 23:17Speaker 01

  That's true, man. In life.

• 23:19Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 23:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:21Theo Von?

Well, yeah, I think, well, especially in New York because it's so expensive. In other places, some people get a roommate because they just get maybe lonesome or whatever.

• 23:28Speaker 01

Do you, do you have a roommate?

• 23:29Theo Von?

I don't have a roommate, you know? I would like to get one or I'd like to get a wife maybe this year.

• 23:33Speaker 01

  Where, where?

• 23:34Theo Von?

  Next year.

• 23:34Speaker 01

  How do you go?

• 23:35Theo Von?

Twenty twenty wife, that's what I'm calling it, dude.

• 23:37Speaker 01

How do you go about that?

• 23:38Theo Von?

I think getting out there and meeting people.

• 23:41Speaker 01

Do you have friends that you trust, um, that you would trust, like, to set you up?

• 23:45Theo Von?

Some, but sometimes you're shocked at who they'll set you up with.

• 23:47Speaker 01

  Really? Like, you're insulted?

• 23:49Theo Von?

I mean, you're just like, well, we must think that you think differently of me than I think of me.

• 23:53Speaker 01

How so? Give me an example.

• 23:55Theo Von?

  Uh, just like.

• 23:55Speaker 01

  No names, but.

• 23:57Theo Von?

Just somebody put me off with like a, you know, just a, um, a woman that had like, you know, anyway I say this, I lose here.

• 24:05Speaker 01

Okay, all right, all right, all right, all right, enough said.

• 24:07Theo Von?

Just people that there was no.

• 24:09Speaker 01

How do you do this format? Like, you're never nervous that people are gonna watch that you're, that you're talking about?

• 24:13Theo Von?

Yeah, but I just make sure that I just try and, uh, don't say anything that would be really mean about somebody. So right there, it could've got weird.

• 24:20Speaker 01

Right, and you send, you'll send scary people after people, you know?

• 24:23Theo Von?

  Oh, well, I mean, well.

• 24:24Speaker 01

You'll send guys in suits outside people's houses, make sure they don't.

• 24:27Theo Von?

There's a podcast sphere out there that things, you know, get handled or whatever. I don't want to use that term.

• 24:31Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's terrifying.

• 24:33Theo Von?

It's not a, there's no lawyer that will hold on to say that.

• 24:35Speaker 01

  You're just winging it.

• 24:36Theo Von?

The Lord is our lawyer. That's some of these people's motto.

• 24:39Speaker 01

Right, right, right, right. Right, right.

• 24:41Theo Von?

Do you, uh, when you go into a role like this, do you start to think like, so a lot of younger people will think that you're Bob Dylan, you almost become, you almost take a piece of the person's existence in a strange way. Does that make any sense to you?

• 29:59Speaker 01

Yeah, man. Yes and no, you know, because I've become such a fan of his that, um, it's not like I feel like I'm a blemish on the legacy, but I-

• 30:06Theo Von?

No, not at all. That's not what I mean.

• 30:08Speaker 01

  No, I know, but-

• 30:08Theo Von?

People are gonna think, when they, some people are gonna think you are Bob, they're gonna think that, when they think of him in the future, your face will come into their-

• 30:15Speaker 01

I'm just saying that even if I have like, you know, a healthy amount of self-respect, it's never gonna come close to who he is. So I like the idea that I could be a bridge, but like I had a buddy that said, um, the Johnny Cash movie, Joaquin Phoenix, who is the same director, walked the line. He said, "You know, I actually like Joaquin's versions of Johnny Cash's songs better than Johnny Cash's songs." But I never wanted that, sincerely, I don't want that to happen here because, and I wanted to protect against it because Bob's got this raw voice.

• 30:39Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 30:39Speaker 01

He's got this like iron voice and, uh, I don't want, I never wanted these songs to be sort of like more gentle than his songs, you know, and had to fight against that because the recordings we made, a lot of them were super, it's hard, man. He was playing on a beat up guitar with shitty recorders. He had a bronchitis in his early twenties, his voice was all fucked up and, uh, and I didn't want it to be like watered down, you know, because he very purposefully was, he liked Jack Kerouac and Moriarty. He, you know, a lot of the books I read, he didn't have great hygiene and stuff like this. So I didn't want the movie to be watered down all of a sudden, you know?

• 31:12Theo Von?

Like you wanted to honor him as much as you could.

• 31:13Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly.

• 31:14Theo Von?

But also without being him as much like you-

• 31:16Speaker 01

Yeah, not do this Hollywood version, basically.

• 31:18Theo Von?

  Right.

• 31:19Speaker 01

Because these biopics, it's a fine line, man. It's a, and I've never done anything like this. I usually play a role, actually sort of-

• 31:24Theo Von?

  Yeah, Wonka you did, kinda.

• 31:24Speaker 01

Yeah, Wonka I did, yeah, and-

• 31:26Theo Von?

  But that's maybe not real.

• 31:27Speaker 01

No, but it's, yeah, yeah, thank God.

• 31:29Theo Von?

  Well, don't tell the children.

• 31:30Speaker 01

Thank God. No, well, I also, you know, probably have to get psychiatric help. But, um, but, uh, no, and there's a certain pressure with that Wonka too. People are like very protective of characters they love, you know, they don't want, and there's sort of like a cynicism about Hollywood, you know, about like why do they keep revisiting? The Wonka thing I felt was justified because it's a new story. We weren't doing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We were doing sort of an origin. And, uh, by the way, I don't know if you've seen Wonka. Have you?

• 31:54Theo Von?

Yeah, which one have I seen? Um, yeah, I've seen all of them.

• 31:56Speaker 01

You watched it while you were in the car spying on the, on the, on the list.

• 32:02Speaker 01

You had it playing on the audio.

• 32:05Theo Von?

If you, first of all, if you've never seen the Wonka movie, you just listen to the audio, that's a little bit.

• 32:09Speaker 01

  That's already weird too.

• 32:10Theo Von?

  It's kind of, yeah.

• 32:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 32:11Theo Von?

  It's interesting.

• 32:12Speaker 01

They had Stevie Wonder at the movie last night.

• 32:13Theo Von?

  Oh, really?

• 32:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 32:14Theo Von?

  Interesting bridge right there.

• 32:16Speaker 01

No, but I was saying thing, man. I was like.

• 32:17Theo Von?

It is, right? You're like, just, yeah.

• 32:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 32:19Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 32:20Speaker 01

No disrespect, but I was just like.

• 32:21Theo Von?

No, the godfather of surround sound, basically, yeah.

• 32:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 32:25Theo Von?

Yeah, that's what I heard. The premiere was, uh, pretty interesting. So last night was your premiere?

• 32:29Speaker 01

It was premiere in LA, man. It was great, you know, um.

• 32:31Theo Von?

Oh dude, thanks for coming the day after your premiere.

• 32:33Speaker 01

Yeah, that was probably a little late. I apologize, man.

• 32:35Theo Von?

  Were you guys up late?

• 32:36Speaker 01

We were up late and I basically, I shot this movie Marty Supreme All the Fall. These crazy directors, you know, or crazy director Josh Saft. You ever see Uncut Gems?

• 32:44Theo Von?

  Oh yeah, so good.

• 32:45Speaker 01

That director. So it's kind of that energy, that chaotic thing. So it wasn't like a low energy shoot. This was like 16 hour days for three months, then I went right into this. So I haven't been like drinking at all, never, not that I ever really had a problem with it, but just, you know, cause these days. And I actually find my mind is so much sharper. I'm amazed I haven't gotten sick through this whole like last couple of months. But last night I did have a couple of drinks. I'm kind of fried today, man.

• 33:06Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 33:07Speaker 01

I'm sorry, my voice is a little.

• 33:08Theo Von?

No, you gotta, did you have to get up and make a speech? What's it like at something like that?

• 33:13Speaker 01

I, uh, man, great question. It's like.

• 33:16Theo Von?

  Oh, here we are.

• 33:16Speaker 01

Oh, man. I don't do, I don't do the, um, I call it instant nostalgia, you know?

• 33:23Theo Von?

Oh, seeing these pictures like this?

• 33:24Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, I mean.

• 33:25Theo Von?

It's kind of bizarre, isn't it?

• 33:26Speaker 01

Yeah, it's kind of bizarre, man. This is good, cuz this is, I'll say this, it's a great cast and a great, uh, a great, uh, director. So we all have fun. Edward Norton, man. Edward Norton should come on this podcast, man. He's a legend, absolute legend.

• 33:38Theo Von?

Oh, yeah, he's a super legend. He was in the, um, he was in-

• 33:42Speaker 01

  You ever see Rounders?

• 33:43Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 33:44Speaker 01

You play, do you play Texas Hold'em?

• 33:46Theo Von?

Yeah, I play it sometimes. He's good. And the, both of the actresses were great, the ladies in it. Oh, and his wife was in it, what's her name?

• 33:54Speaker 01

  Uh, Eriko, Eriko.

• 33:56Theo Von?

  Eriko.

• 33:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 33:58Theo Von?

Yeah, they got a, um, beautiful group of ladies in there. And men, too.

• 34:02Speaker 01

Yeah, look at Boyd Holbrook, man. With the blue suit on. That's a handsome man.

• 34:06Theo Von?

  Is he real handsome?

• 34:08Speaker 01

  Yeah, he's a, he's a stud.

• 34:09Theo Von?

Well, dude, you're kind of a handsome dude, like a lot of dudes-

• 34:11Speaker 01

You are, man. Look at the, I've, people, I've seen so many people-

• 34:13Theo Von?

  You calm down, brother.

• 34:14Speaker 01

I've seen so many people ape your haircut.

• 34:16Theo Von?

  Really?

• 34:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:17Theo Von?

Oh, these, yeah, there's a lot of frickin' thieves out there.

• 34:19Speaker 01

How long have you had it?

• 34:20Theo Von?

This haircut, I've had for probably, it's a little dicey today. I've had it for probably, well, I had it as a child.

• 34:27Speaker 01

Oh, no way, this goes back?

• 34:28Theo Von?

Oh, yeah. And then I tried to like blend in, like whenever I moved to Hollywood and stuff, and it didn't work for me, and so then I tried to blend out.

• 34:35Speaker 01

Oh, so you started in LA before Nashville?

• 34:36Theo Von?

Yeah. Yeah, I lived out here for 12 years. I was doing stand-up comedy. This is where I started doing stand-up comedy.

• 34:40Speaker 01

Oh, yeah, where, the Comedy Store and stuff like that? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 34:43Theo Von?

Comedy Store. It was awesome, man. I really enjoyed it.

• 34:45Speaker 01

And a whole, like, sort of generation of comedians came out that, over there then, huh?

• 34:48Theo Von?

Yeah, and that was like, um, yeah, all types. They had like, uh, Chris D'elia, Tom Segura.

• 34:54Speaker 01

Is that a bigger, uh, bigger comedy base here than New York, you think?

• 34:58Theo Von?

That's a good question. You know what's so funny? They're totally different from each other, and some people in one don't even know the people in the other.

• 35:04Speaker 01

Because the audience is different, you think?

• 35:06Theo Von?

Just, just, it's just a total different group of people. Like, you go there and it's almost like it feels like you have to start all over. It's a, it's just a total different- Like, you, I'll go into a club there and it feels like-

• 35:15Speaker 01

  A whole different thing.

• 35:16Theo Von?

I'm walking into a club for the first time.

• 35:17Speaker 01

In New York, you don't think you get the love you get out here?

• 35:19Theo Von?

I think you, you'll get the, you'll get a lot of respect, but you just feel that way. It's not your territory, you know?

• 35:24Speaker 01

  Right, right, right, right.

• 35:25Theo Von?

And you wanna give respect to the guys, that that's their grounds that they walk on every day.

• 35:29Speaker 01

  Interesting, interesting, interesting.

• 35:30Theo Von?

Cuz that's where they live. Like, if somebody came out and was like, being real flashy, but they're not in your, in, in, in your kind of club here, it would be the same way, I think.

• 35:38Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 35:39Theo Von?

So there's a lot of code of conduct like that.

• 35:40Speaker 01

Would you ever do Saturday Night Live?

• 35:42Theo Von?

I don't know, man. You know, it's so funny. I went and saw it recently.

• 35:46Speaker 01

  It's crazy, right? It's a crazy setup.

• 35:48Theo Von?

It is crazy. You did it?

• 35:49Speaker 01

Yeah, I've done it twice. It's super dialed in, right?

• 35:51Theo Von?

I shouldn't have done that. Oh, yeah, dude. I went with Chris Farley's brother. It was the first time that he'd been back to go to SNL since his brother was on there, since he'd went with him. So it was pretty neat. He was, he, dude, he told so many great stories. I wish they'd have put him out on stage. I was like, have him go out there.

• 36:09Speaker 01

  Right.

• 36:09Theo Von?

Tell his stories. It was just classic, man. But I went to watch Bill Burr. I'm a big Bill Burr fan, so I went to watch him.

• 36:15Speaker 01

Did you see the last Sandler special on Netflix?

• 36:16Theo Von?

McGee performed that night, too. That was dope. And then, um, there we are, right there with Chris Farley's brother, right there.

• 36:23Speaker 01

  I thought that was McGee.

• 36:26Speaker 01

Dude, you look like you're 23, man. It's true.

• 36:29Theo Von?

I look like I'm on HGH, dude. I gotta get some HGH.

• 36:35Speaker 01

  Do you work out?

• 36:35Theo Von?

Yeah, I do work out, dude. Yeah, I do. God. Yeah, I went today. I mean, that's what I mean.

• 36:43Speaker 01

  We once. Works out once.

• 36:48Theo Von?

What else do I want to know about this film? So you didn't hear anything from Bob. What about like his wife or his kid or something?

• 36:54Speaker 01

No, his kids, you know, almost towards the start, Monica, who plays Joan Baez in the movie, she was in touch with Joan the whole time. And I thought about reaching out to his kids, but the thing is, when somebody gets revered like Bob at some point, he becomes this legend, you know, people can sanitize the past.

• 37:12Theo Von?

What do you mean by that when you say that? Just so we know.

• 37:14Speaker 01

They could present the best version of someone, you know, and not present their flaws, you know? Even a lot of the documentaries about Bob, they just paint him as a genius. There's one documentary called Don't Look Back, this DA Pennybaker one, where you actually see him raw. It just captures his behavior. And it was sort of right before he got too famous where he turned his back, you know, on letting himself be filmed. And so that was like the biggest help for me because, and I thought about talking to his kids or his grandkids, but, um, actually, I was at the University of Minnesota, like three days ago, we're doing a, doing a sort of a screening for the students there. And then someone said, this is Milo Dillon. This is his grandnephew. And he looked like, kind of looked like Bob. And he's, he said, can we get a picture? And then he put his finger out. He said, you FaZe? And then I said, well, like the video game? Like the video game? He said, no, never mind.

• 37:59Theo Von?

So the new Dylan, so even all the Dillons are unique.

• 38:03Speaker 01

Yeah, I don't know what that means.

• 38:05Theo Von?

  You phase?

• 38:05Speaker 01

You phase with the finger like that?

• 38:07Theo Von?

I don't know. I mean, I know Faze Banks, I don't know a lot of the Faze guys. I know that one of them gave CPR to Sketch one night or something when he wasn't doing good.

• 38:16Speaker 01

  Whoa.

• 38:17Theo Von?

Um, but anyway, shouldn't have said that out loud.

• 38:19Speaker 01

  Who's Sketch? I don't know Sketch.

• 38:20Theo Von?

Uh, what's up, brother? That guy? Did you see him?

• 38:24Speaker 01

  No.

• 38:24Theo Von?

Oh, my gosh. Wow. It's crazy how different worlds are so different, dude.

• 38:31Theo Von?

  Sketch, him.

• 38:33Speaker 01

  No.

• 38:33Theo Von?

  Oh, my god.

• 38:35Speaker 01

No. Oh, oh, yes, I have, I have, I have. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 38:38Theo Von?

  What's up, brother?

• 38:39Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He's been on this.

• 38:42Theo Von?

Oh, yeah, he's been on that. He's a great, bro. He is so creative. He has one of the most creative minds I've been around.

• 38:47Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 38:47Theo Von?

Just like to, he has his own pentameter of making jokes and stuff. It's pretty fascinating.

• 38:50Speaker 01

  Is he stand up?

• 38:51Theo Von?

Nope, he's not a stand up. I think there's this new thing that goes on now where as if somebody's, uh, it's interesting what's gonna happen with stand up, because stand up was just been this thing that people always go practice and then they go do. But now a lot of people build so much traction from social media.

• 39:04Speaker 01

Yeah, that they pop off like that.

• 39:06Theo Von?

Right, so then how do you, but then how do you take that and perform it? Is there a performance element?

• 39:10Speaker 01

It's a whole different thing. Yeah, because some people on their podcasts are grinning, the stand up is different, right?

• 39:14Theo Von?

  Yeah, it's different.

• 39:15Speaker 01

Do you feel like stand up's in a golden era? I feel like it's like boxing. I feel like now, I feel like Netflix kind of made it, uh, you know, sexy again in some way.

• 39:23Theo Von?

Yeah, I think, well, the news got like very, um, all the same, I feel like, and it got very, I, what, a lot of people believe maybe, um, commandeered by advertising in a way.

• 39:35Speaker 01

  Right, right, right, right, right.

• 39:36Theo Von?

Some of that happens, it's capitalism. So I think podcasting was just this like,

• 39:41Speaker 01

  Became this open format.

• 39:42Theo Von?

  Yes.

• 39:42Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 39:43Theo Von?

  Where it was like, okay.

• 39:43Speaker 01

Also, you know that you're really resonating in some way.

• 39:45Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 39:46Speaker 01

Right? Because it's not dollars that, or it's not like.

• 39:48Theo Von?

Well, especially in the beginning, for the first like four or five years, you're not really making any money. So it's like, um, you're just doing your best, you're just keeping it. And then at a certain point, like, people will say, well, if you're not gonna let me say what I want, then get your advertising off of my network.

• 40:02Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's a, that's a risk, man. I mean, it's a risk dollars wise, right?

• 40:06Theo Von?

Oh, it's a risk dollars wise, yeah. I mean Dana White was on here one time and one of our episodes got pulled down because of um we had Bobby Kennedy on this, a political friend, a buddy of mine, but um who also ended up going into politics. But they didn't want to be associated with it or whatever. And uh anyway Dana was on and he said, what, what, who called and said they, and we were like, it was this um

• 40:27Speaker 01

  Kellogg's.

• 40:28Theo Von?

It was Viking Company or something. No, it was like a Proton or whatever it's called.

• 40:31Speaker 01

  Peloton.

• 40:32Theo Von?

  Peloton.

• 40:32Speaker 01

  Peloton, interesting.

• 40:33Theo Von?

And dude, next thing you know, people all across the country were throwing Pelotons into the Boston River, yeah.

• 40:38Speaker 01

Well, they give you heart attacks too.

• 40:39Theo Von?

Do they really? Oh, well, that's not gonna help them.

• 40:41Speaker 01

No, no, based on that Sex and the City, you know, Mr. Biggs. That's how he died.

• 40:45Theo Von?

  I didn't see that.

• 40:46Speaker 01

You see that he died on the Peloton, the episode. He dies in the episode and then their, their stock crashed because people thought it was killing, it's like, and they obviously had to sign off on that.

• 40:54Theo Von?

I guess, that wouldn't be a good idea.

• 40:56Speaker 01

That's a real thing, right, Mr. Biggs, uh, I think.

• 40:58Theo Von?

Can we see that? We're pulling it up. Anyway. Oh, there he is.

• 41:02Speaker 01

Oh, yeah. That's what happens when you.

• 41:05Theo Von?

  He married Samantha, huh?

• 41:08Theo Von?

I don't know about this show.

• 41:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 41:10Theo Von?

Um, what else is I gonna think about? Oh, when you think about, so I just want to make sure that we get a lot about this film and what I thought that was.

• 41:17Speaker 01

Yeah, what did you like about it? You don't have to, you don't have to, you don't have to like the movie, but were you, did you know anything about Bob Dylan before or no?

• 41:23Theo Von?

Nope. I uh, well, yeah, I know some of his music, you know, I know.

• 41:26Speaker 01

Did your parents or your mom listen to it?

• 41:28Theo Von?

Oh, yeah, my mom listened to it. My best, this kid I grew up with, he would play it in his room every night. He had the harmonica and everything. He was a big Bob Dylan fan. Yeah, my, my um, my friend Ty, who I used to live with, uh, who, uh, yeah, I mean, Bob Dylan was the first mumble rapper, I mean.

• 41:41Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, man, absolutely.

• 41:44Theo Von?

Yeah, whining with a backbeat. Everybody's like, you know, thinking that it was some of these other guys like Uzi Vert or maybe Kodak Black. Who's just a mumbler. I mean, at a certain point, can we just say that? He's great.

• 41:57Speaker 01

Yeah, he was a mumble, I mean, uh, at some point he enunciated better.

• 42:01Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 42:01Speaker 01

  But um, definitely early on.

• 42:03Theo Von?

Yeah, it's gotten a little rocky. I feel like it's gotten rocky recently.

• 42:05Speaker 01

  Which is cool, man.

• 42:06Theo Von?

He might be going through some stuff too, who knows? Sometimes it's so hard to know, you know, what people are going through.

• 42:09Speaker 01

Well, he definitely keeps it behind a screen. We don't know what's going on.

• 42:13Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 42:13Speaker 01

I probably said more in this interview than he said his whole life.

• 42:15Theo Von?

  It's mythological, probably.

• 42:16Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 42:17Theo Von?

That'd be great if we had a word, like it's a word counter. For you and Kodak?

• 42:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 42:21Theo Von?

You're like just miles ahead of them.

• 42:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, literally.

• 42:25Theo Von?

Dude, you could sneeze and be like seven words ahead of him up here, like.

• 42:28Speaker 01

You said it, you said it.

• 42:29Theo Von?

Um, what about some other, well, I just want to think anything else about the film that was, was it hard to learn the music? Did you, did you have any issues with that? Or how did you guys?

• 42:38Speaker 01

Not really, man. I had five years to work on it. So I took guitar lessons with a great.

• 42:41Theo Von?

Wait, you had five years to work on this? Wait, because you auditioned for it?

• 42:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 42:44Theo Von?

Over a long period of time?

• 42:45Speaker 01

Well, 2018, we're supposed to do it, summer of 2020, then the pandemic hit, then I just kept working on it, kept working on it. I was supposed to do the summer of 2023, then the strike hit, which is when I was coaching, still getting in trouble for doing my, my, uh, you know, getting rid of my lisp. I'm just kidding.

• 43:02Theo Von?

Oh, when you were meeting with that guy?

• 43:04Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 43:04Theo Von?

In the dark alleys to fricking, yeah.

• 43:06Speaker 01

  To work on the accent.

• 43:07Theo Von?

Yeah, to work on your, uh, keeping your tongue down when you say certain vowels?

• 43:14Theo Von?

  Down with the palate!

• 43:15Speaker 01

Yeah, that's, hey, man, you know, do you work, you know?

• 43:19Theo Von?

I, well, years ago, I went to a voice.

• 43:20Speaker 01

You know, I actually talk like this.

• 43:21Theo Von?

  Uh, yeah.

• 43:22Speaker 01

Your voice is actually super high. When I walked in here today, Theo's voice was super high. Walk in! Yeah, he was.

• 43:29Theo Von?

I'm a Disney character guy, dude.

• 43:31Speaker 01

And he kept doing this weird thing. We'd rock back and forth. Oh, boy! So he welcomed me and he insisted that I jump on his back and get brought in here. And he put me on the couch. Then he assumed the character we all know that is Theo Von, but.

• 43:47Theo Von?

I actually wanted to jump on my front, dude. When people do front side piggybacks, that's kind of like.

• 43:51Speaker 01

Never heard of that in my life.

• 43:53Theo Von?

And that's when I quit, hey, that's when I quit playing tennis in junior high school, I'll tell you.

• 43:57Speaker 01

But listen, you gotta be strong enough to do that.

• 43:59Theo Von?

  That's a good point.

• 44:00Speaker 01

I could probably, I could probably do it to you. I'm getting you out your comfort zone, man.

• 44:04Theo Von?

You could do a front side piggyback.

• 44:07Speaker 01

When we finish this, when we finish this, you know, I'm jumping on the front.

• 44:11Theo Von?

And anybody that can draw a picture of Timothy and me involved in front side piggybacking, let me know. Um, I'll buy it from you and we'll donate a thousand dollars to a charity of your choice.

• 44:20Speaker 01

And, you know, um. Can I F you, you after this? Like a little John Cena thing?

• 44:27Speaker 01

Just for promo, just for promo.

• 44:29Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 44:29Speaker 01

It's clicks, it's clicks. I'll do it on this.

• 44:31Theo Von?

  Okay.

• 44:32Speaker 01

All right. And you land on that. Oh, man.

• 44:35Theo Von?

You just lay somebody on this?

• 44:37Speaker 01

No, I'm gonna be like, then I'll, and then I'll suplex you on that.

• 44:40Theo Von?

  Right through there?

• 44:40Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 44:41Theo Von?

Yeah, I think we should get that.

• 44:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 44:42Theo Von?

It's that time of year, man, it's the holidays.

• 44:44Speaker 01

Come on, it's the holidays. You know, this is, this is the holidays in America in 2024.

• 44:49Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 44:49Speaker 01

Are you a big holidays guy?

• 44:50Theo Von?

You know what? I think it does remind me a little bit to slow down, kind of. You know, which is nice, because life gets going pretty fast a lot of times.

• 44:58Speaker 01

Do you think you're more elfish or Santa?

• 45:02Theo Von?

Oh, it's a good question. Oh, I wish I could be a little more Santa.

• 45:05Speaker 01

  You think you're a?

• 45:06Theo Von?

I'm more of, sometimes a little more Mrs. Claus. Like, I'll start bitching about a lot of shit, you know?

• 45:10Speaker 01

  About nothing.

• 45:11Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 45:11Speaker 01

  About nothing.

• 45:12Theo Von?

I'll just get a latch, but I just gotta slow down. It's just been like a, a long year.

• 45:16Speaker 01

  Yeah, you've been busy.

• 45:17Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 45:17Speaker 01

What are you gonna do for, are you gonna go away or anything?

• 45:18Theo Von?

Yeah, I'm gonna go to Louisiana and see some family, then I might try to take a vacation for a few days. We'll see.

• 45:22Speaker 01

  Little Baton Rouge?

• 45:23Theo Von?

Yeah, my family lives right down there. So what about you?

• 45:26Speaker 01

I'm gonna be here, because I've been all over the place. I'm going to New York tonight, then I go to London, and then, uh, do all this promo for the movie.

• 45:33Theo Von?

Oh, you said to promo for this movie for how long does promo take?

• 45:35Speaker 01

Well, it's coming out on Christmas, so I'm going every day, you know? But I love the movie, that's why, that's why, you know, that's why, shit, man, I'm trying to go as hard as possible. And, uh, and, you know, and then fucking, uh, come back here and be with my family, be with my new little niece.

• 45:51Theo Von?

Oh, you got a new niece?

• 45:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 45:52Theo Von?

  First one?

• 45:53Speaker 01

  First one.

• 45:53Theo Von?

  Let's go, dude.

• 45:55Speaker 01

  That's a crazy moment.

• 45:55Theo Von?

What's her name? Can you bring a picture of her? We can show a picture of her.

• 45:57Speaker 01

I don't even think, I think my sister's kept her offline. You know, my sister lives in a, um, sort of like, um, she's with a group of people in like a forest type thing in France.

• 46:06Theo Von?

No way, you're wearing, near Nancy?

• 46:08Speaker 01

Yeah, near, uh, near Nancy, yep. And, yeah, yeah, yeah, in, uh, in a forest, no, no internet, no, just fuck with you. I'm sorry, bro.

• 46:14Theo Von?

  Oh, you're good.

• 46:14Speaker 01

  No, sorry. No, no, she's.

• 46:17Theo Von?

Let's check in on your sister. You know, let's email her a meal.

• 46:21Speaker 01

Let's give her a French, French Groupon, French Groupon. No, but she's, uh,

• 46:25Theo Von?

  Gourdeuse.

• 46:26Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No Groupons in France, man. No Groupons in France. No Groupons and a high property tax.

• 46:32Theo Von?

They have high property tax over there?

• 46:33Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 46:33Theo Von?

  It's beautiful property.

• 46:34Speaker 01

Beautiful property, and they don't want people just coming in, you know, not, you know?

• 46:37Theo Von?

Just milling around for forty bucks a month property tax?

• 46:39Speaker 01

I'm in that age now where I'll chat GPT, like, what are the most attractive low property tax? Places in America or around the world.

• 46:48Theo Von?

Oh, yeah. One of them was my neighborhood growing up, dude. I remember our property tax was eight dollars one year. My mom paid in cash, dude, right out of her purse. I was like, where do we live at?

• 46:58Speaker 01

  Who'd she give it to?

• 47:00Theo Von?

  The guy that came by.

• 47:01Speaker 01

Was it a legit guy, you think?

• 47:02Theo Von?

He looked pretty legit. He had all of his buttons on his head.

• 47:05Speaker 01

He had a hoodie that said government?

• 47:09Speaker 01

She just gave him eight bucks. Oh, man. Same thing, man. I grew up in like a Mitchell Lama. You know about Mitchell Lama?

• 47:14Theo Von?

Oh, yeah, the restaurant stars or whatever?

• 47:16Speaker 01

No, no, no, no, no. Mitchell Lama is like, uh, there's like two ver- to my understanding, there's two versions of like good arts housing. You got section eight. That means you're paying like under eight hundred bucks. Mitchell Lama, yep.

• 47:28Theo Von?

Oh, that damn Mitchell Lama, brother.

• 47:29Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 47:30Theo Von?

  Oh.

• 47:32Speaker 01

  That's me, baby, moderate.

• 47:33Theo Von?

Mitchell Lama Program provides affordable rental and cooperative housing to moderate and middle income families. You're just talking about alphabet city, basically.

• 47:39Speaker 01

Dude, wow. So how do you know you're, you know, New York, man?

• 47:42Theo Von?

I like New York. I like, I mean, yeah, it's definitely fascinating.

• 47:45Speaker 01

  You ever live there?

• 47:46Theo Von?

No, I, I, I, I've just stayed there for like maybe three months at the most. I would live there. If I get a wife and she lives there, I'll stay, I'll go live there.

• 47:54Speaker 01

What's the ideal, you know, what does she look like both inside and out?

• 47:57Theo Von?

Um, well, she looks like, probably looks like a nice lady, I think. Let me think about the rest of it. Probably maybe played volleyball, maybe didn't. Maybe likes to be a mom, maybe. I don't know, dude.

• 48:17Speaker 01

  She's looking for to-

• 48:18Theo Von?

Likes to laugh, has a good sense of humor.

• 48:19Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 48:20Theo Von?

Because people that laugh get jokes usually. Like, you can't.

• 48:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 48:24Theo Von?

You know, unless you're just, something's wrong with you and you're something, you just laugh every now and then.

• 48:28Speaker 01

  Right, right.

• 48:29Theo Von?

  But, yeah.

• 48:30Speaker 01

  Could she do somersaults?

• 48:31Theo Von?

Ooh, I hope she can, but I'm not trying to be some kind of pervert or whatever, you know, but I wouldn't mind seeing one every now and then, especially if it's holidays or whatever and she wants to, you know, pop off a damn bee handspring or something before everybody cuts into some lackeys or whatever. I'm down for it. Um, so, yeah, I think I'm open to a lot of different things, I think, you know?

• 53:02Speaker 01

Yeah. You gotta set the, you gotta set your life up.

• 53:04Theo Von?

Yeah. And how, and how are you going to get divorced if you don't get married? You know what I'm saying?

• 53:07Speaker 01

Absolutely. And those are two crucial chapters of life. Is, is, is your, is your home, you know, wifable?

• 53:14Theo Von?

  Not cur- ah.

• 53:15Speaker 01

Is there like shit everywhere when you walk in?

• 53:18Theo Von?

You know, my mom's organized, I got my tree up right now.

• 53:21Speaker 01

  Nice, you got a tree.

• 53:22Theo Von?

Mm-hmm. I got a box of gifts. There's a lady that I don't even know who has sent me a box of Christmas ornaments for the past four years.

• 53:28Speaker 01

  Sweet.

• 53:28Theo Von?

It comes every year. I put them up on the tree.

• 53:30Speaker 01

It's got a little mic and a camera in there.

• 53:31Theo Von?

  There's the, uh.

• 53:33Speaker 01

  Yeah, she's just.

• 53:35Theo Von?

Bro, that's such a good idea.

• 53:37Speaker 01

Yeah, and she's just watching you watch.

• 53:39Theo Von?

Every Christmas, it's called, it's a murder movie.

• 53:41Speaker 01

  It's a murder, yeah.

• 53:42Theo Von?

Or it's just some movie about, it's about somebody who used to love somebody and they're watching their family now. And they send them this random box and people put it on their tree they don't know.

• 53:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:50Theo Von?

And has a camera in it.

• 53:50Speaker 01

And they have a camera in it. Yeah, write it, baby.

• 53:53Theo Von?

I'm not gonna, but we did, that's it.

• 53:54Speaker 01

What do you watch on Christmas?

• 53:56Theo Von?

  Hmm, I watch.

• 53:57Speaker 01

What would, what would the camera see you doing?

• 53:59Theo Von?

Um, well, um, we're supposed to do Christmas caroling this year with a couple of fellows from the gym, actually. And so, we're supposed to practice on Friday. And we just hired a cool brother over there in Nashville to help us learn some of the lyrics.

• 54:11Speaker 01

  You say brothers, dude.

• 54:12Theo Von?

  And then, uh.

• 54:13Speaker 01

I love when you say that, man.

• 54:13Theo Von?

Oh, yeah, we're excited about it. There's all brothers going, so you gotta respect the culture, man. You know what I'm saying?

• 54:19Speaker 01

  Oh, man.

• 54:20Theo Von?

Or, uh, but yeah, and then what are we gonna go, uh, oh, I watched Family Man, have you ever seen that one?

• 54:26Speaker 01

Nah, I've never seen Family Man.

• 54:28Theo Von?

  With Nicolas Cage?

• 54:29Speaker 01

  Nicolas Cage.

• 54:30Theo Von?

  It's a great movie.

• 54:31Speaker 01

  One of the greats.

• 54:31Theo Von?

  Have you ever met him?

• 54:32Speaker 01

No, man, but, uh, Matchstick Men's one of my favorite movies ever.

• 54:35Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 54:35Speaker 01

You know, you know, Nicolas Cage, man.

• 54:39Theo Von?

  Um.

• 54:39Speaker 01

  What a life.

• 54:40Theo Von?

But, yeah, I'd like to get a wife, maybe. What about, uh, there's kind of a love triangle in the movie.

• 54:44Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, there's a.

• 54:46Theo Von?

So the, the women's Joan Baez.

• 54:47Speaker 01

Joan Baez and, uh, Sylvie Russo.

• 54:49Theo Von?

Is Sylvie Russo, was she an artist? I couldn't tell.

• 54:51Speaker 01

Yeah, she, she's, her real name's Suze Rataul on real life, but the real Bob Dylan was still very protective over her. She was never really famous. So he, that was one of his big script notes. He said, change that name. And, uh, you know, just, I think he felt protective over her legacy in some way.

• 55:07Theo Von?

And so he had some notes about the script?

• 55:08Speaker 01

Yeah, exactly. The love triangle is, is sort of, uh, one of the big, you know, like, we do these Q and A's for the movie now, and people will say, was Bob, was his behavior towards the?

• 55:21Speaker 01

The people that he was in a relationship with in his life, you know, was it, it's definitely complicated. But my answer is always, he was, he was focused on his art first and foremost. Also, this movie is about people in their early twenties. You don't really have life figured out, especially in relationship then.

• 55:32Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 55:32Speaker 01

That stuff is a mess at that age. So he was kind of between these, these two women in the movie. And Joan Baez is a musician and artist, ambitious, the way Bob would have been. And Sylvie's really the more grounded character. I think what Elle Fanning does in the movie is incredible. You kind of see the movie through her eyes because she's not, she's not one of these famous musicians. She's really just a real person and is, you know, deeply affected.

• 55:54Theo Von?

Yes, she was very affected by Dylan and her, her character was.

• 55:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 55:57Theo Von?

  That was interesting to see.

• 55:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 55:58Theo Von?

  And the things that pulled.

• 55:59Speaker 01

Well, she was, she's the only person in the movie that doesn't have a transactional relationship with him. Really loves him for who he is. And, um, you know, that was our theory, you know, I never talked to Bob Dylan, but I feel like that's why I think he's still fond of that relationship and private about it. Cause if maybe the rest of his life could be confusing, I'm not, I don't want to speak for him, but confusing about like who's being genuine with me and who's not. She was always the clear day one.

• 56:23Theo Von?

  Clear candidate.

• 56:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:24Theo Von?

  Wow, that's interesting.

• 56:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:27Theo Von?

Yeah, yeah, I found like, um, when I was watching it. Yeah, you're kind of rooting, it's weird because who you're rooting for changes almost from scene to scene in the movie.

• 56:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:38Theo Von?

  You know?

• 56:38Speaker 01

Yeah, no one's like a great, uh, besides Elle Fanning, everyone comes off a little.

• 56:43Theo Von?

  Real.

• 56:44Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, hopefully, yeah.

• 56:45Theo Von?

Like flawed, but like in a human way.

• 56:47Speaker 01

Flawed in a human way and a little, especially in your early twenties, man, you're trying to figure out your life.

• 56:50Theo Von?

Uh, dude, they don't even, yeah.

• 56:53Speaker 01

Were you a saint in your early twenties?

• 56:54Theo Von?

Dude, no, I was, I mean, I was a Saints fan, I'm a New Orleans Saints fan, but I was not, uh, I was not.

• 57:00Speaker 01

You're at the game, like, fuck it.

• 57:03Theo Von?

I mean, I had on maybe a, you know, I might've had on a Drew Brees jersey.

• 57:06Speaker 01

Drew Brees jersey on your 16th Miller Lite.

• 57:08Theo Von?

  Dude, yeah, that's for sure.

• 57:10Speaker 01

  That was.

• 57:12Theo Von?

Um, but no, yeah, it's like, yeah, how do you even get, start to get things figured out?

• 57:18Theo Von?

But that's one thing that I liked about it. I like seeing the different, and I like that there was like, okay, what's this relationship like over here gonna happen? What's this relationship like over here gonna happen? And then just seeing like, I did get a better idea of like, oh, okay, Bob Dylan was just kind of like affected dude that he kind of was maybe better than he thought he was, or, or he was actually so great and they tried to manipulate him. It was just all so confused, you know, like, and I think it was confusing to him and it was like,

• 57:47Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 57:47Theo Von?

It was, it was, it was just a lot going on and he seemed like a unique person and probably like a secretly sensitive guy. And so for all those things to happen, you know, so quick to him and then for him to try to figure it out and navigate what was real. I don't know.

• 58:02Speaker 01

Man, exactly. And that's something I could relate to, not, not in the relationships necessarily in my life, but you know, you feel like your career gets going. I don't know how you feel about that and you want to protect your energy and, and, but you still want to have close, you know, friendships and relationships and, but at first it's very, it's a hard thing to navigate. Particularly if you want to keep writing, you keep wanting like Bob Dylan, you know? And like you said, he was genuinely great and he had a gift from God at that point in his career. He said it in an Ed Bradley interview in 2004. He's like, I feel like God was writing through me. And he says in the interview, I can't do it anymore. He almost says it like, like,

• 58:34Theo Von?

  And he misses it?

• 58:35Speaker 01

Like he misses it. Yeah. It's a beautiful moment in this Ed Bradley interview. He just, uh, he says, I can't do it anymore. I don't know how those words were coming to me and,

• 58:42Theo Von?

  Wow.

• 58:43Speaker 01

And I feel like musicians even more than actors. I feel like an actor like into your thirties and forties and fifties, as your face ages, you can keep doing great work.

• 58:51Theo Von?

  Right.

• 58:51Speaker 01

The gravitas of your life lives on your face. You know what I mean?

• 58:55Theo Von?

Right. And so the more you learn in life, the more abilities you're gonna have.

• 58:58Speaker 01

Yeah. And the more trauma you go through, whatever. And I feel like as a musician, you can still do, still do great shit, but it's really like a young man's game.

• 59:04Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 59:04Speaker 01

  You know?

• 59:05Theo Von?

Yeah. Cause you have to do all that touring and stuff as well.

• 59:07Speaker 01

  Beats you up.

• 59:07Theo Von?

For you, the movie kind of tours for you.

• 59:10Speaker 01

Exactly. You know, I love, you know, it's funny, we do these Q and A's. So I get the backstage experience, my holy shit, I'm coming out, man. Like fuck, they're gonna say my name out loud. I'm all excited and I come out and then as opposed to a rock star, I fucking sit in a chair.

• 59:22Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 59:22Speaker 01

  And I answer much.

• 59:23Theo Von?

  Watch this.

• 59:24Speaker 01

And I sit down and I try to give poised answers.

• 59:26Theo Von?

And just make sure your posture is okay the whole time.

• 59:29Speaker 01

  Dude, it's humiliating.

• 59:30Theo Von?

Posture rocking in the house tonight? That shit is so hard to deal with, dude.

• 59:33Speaker 01

Cause I'll be backstage and it's, you hear the crowd, like Timothy Chalke, yeah. And then I fucking take my seat. Yeah, yeah, and then I'm poised.

• 59:42Theo Von?

Yeah, you're like, oh, let's go!

• 59:43Speaker 01

And I sit down, dude. It's humiliating.

• 59:46Theo Von?

It's like, it's very anti, uh, I don't know what the word is, but somebody else probably knows it, but yeah, I don't know it, but, um, yeah, dude, you know what, though? I think it was, I do think that it was interesting if you frame it up, like, this is what it is. It's a, it's a, it's a mo, it's a few years in a man's life. That was a very interesting man, who's probably written so many songs that some young people don't even know that he wrote.

• 1:00:08Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly.

• 1:00:08Theo Von?

I was listening and I was like, no way he wrote that. And like, um, just some relationships that he had with other artists that you may not even know about.

• 1:00:15Speaker 01

And sort of the first guy for me in American pop culture that said, I'm gonna do whatever the fuck I want.

• 1:00:20Theo Von?

  Hmm, that's a good point.

• 1:00:20Speaker 01

Yeah, and that was like sort of blasphemous. Like, every artist through the last thirty, forty, fifty years that, uh, a lot of whom you can't shout out, cause they, they've basically, they've basically burned so many bridges. But, um, Bob Dylan was the first. He just wouldn't take no for an answer. He just was fired up about his art, and I hope that doesn't sound-

• 1:00:37Theo Von?

And his perception. No, I don't think it sounds like anything.

• 1:00:39Speaker 01

Yeah, I hope it doesn't sound corny, cause he really didn't give a fuck. And it's, uh, that to me was really refreshing to work on. You know, now we live in a time where it's not only, not only is it hard to be rebellious about your art, but it's as much about the Colosseum's reaction. You know, you think about a clip you like online, or, or, uh, something you like or don't like, the first thing you do is you go to the comments. It's as much about how people are reacting, you know what I'm saying? As it is about the, the actual thing.

• 1:01:01Theo Von?

  Right.

• 1:01:01Speaker 01

So in some ways, it's harder now. It's kind of harder now.

• 1:01:04Theo Von?

Because not only do you have to manage what you present, but do you have to manage also how, what, I don't know what to say.

• 1:01:09Speaker 01

Or you gotta, no, no, but, yeah, I was just trying to say, and also, to avoid that, that's kind of what I'm doing these days, man. I'm, you just gotta like, you have to bury your head so far. Even like the pictures from the premiere, I'm just like, you know, I just try to put the shutters on, cause it's not healthy, man, you know?

• 1:01:24Theo Von?

Oh, looking at all your stuff and looking at that? No, it's weird.

• 1:01:26Speaker 01

It's fucking weird. And then, you know-

• 1:01:27Theo Von?

You're not supposed to do it.

• 1:01:28Speaker 01

No, we're supposed to be, you know, like gathering nuts and burying. No, that's not like I'm-

• 1:01:34Theo Von?

Yeah, well, no, they had that first guy Narcissus or whatever looked in the river and saw himself, you know?

• 1:01:38Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.

• 1:01:38Theo Von?

And then he's like, hey, where are the ladies at or whatever? You're like, whoa, dude, what are you talking-

• 1:01:42Speaker 01

What are you talking about, dude? You're not even that good looking.

• 1:01:45Theo Von?

Yeah, kill a rabbit, dude. Yeah.

• 1:01:47Speaker 01

We, our tribe needs to eat, dude.

• 1:01:49Theo Von?

Make a salad, bro. Yeah. We got, yeah.

• 1:01:51Speaker 01

Yeah, we got people to feed. We have seventeen people and our elder is fucking suffering.

• 1:01:55Theo Von?

Like you're over here like trying to start Clar- Clairol or whatever.

• 1:01:58Speaker 01

Yeah, exactly. Fucking working on your, you know, um.

• 1:02:01Theo Von?

Yeah, it's like just a bunch of Dior moisturizer. Talking about lip filler to everybody. Like, what are you even talking about?

• 1:02:07Speaker 01

Dude, it's three hundred B.C. What does that even mean? Stop working on your Raya profile and fucking help us with the fire we need to put out in the forest, you narcissistic prick.

• 1:02:17Theo Von?

Yeah, dude, what are you talking about?

• 1:02:19Speaker 01

I have no fucking clue. No clue.

• 1:02:23Theo Von?

Um, what about other, um, because you can only do so many biopics too.

• 1:02:28Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:02:29Theo Von?

That's kind of weird. You kind of, you burned a biopic.

• 1:02:31Speaker 01

  I burned a biopic, man.

• 1:02:32Theo Von?

  We don't know.

• 1:02:33Speaker 01

I don't know. I burned a biopic and I gotta go back in three months and I gotta check if it's still there. And, um, no, you're right. I can only do so many, especially like music ones. I'll be honest, nah.

• 1:02:42Theo Von?

What are some other ones you think? I have a couple.

• 1:02:43Speaker 01

  Listen, man, I, oh, ideas?

• 1:02:45Theo Von?

  No, you go first.

• 1:02:45Speaker 01

Okay, like that I could do or you could do?

• 1:02:47Theo Von?

I don't know. If I keep talking to people, like, why do you sit with him and then just talk the whole time? So we gotta get you to say something, bro.

• 1:02:53Speaker 01

No, I mean, well, I'm trying to think of ones you could do. Um, you could do, um.

• 1:03:00Theo Von?

I know what I could do, maybe.

• 1:03:02Speaker 01

You could do a Brad Pitt biopic, you know what I'm saying? Put a little right there. Come on, put a little sprinkle on it. Put a little sprinkle on it. No.

• 1:03:07Theo Von?

Maybe if, like, uh, maybe a Brad pick like was stranded somewhere like, you know, that maybe like a hitchhiker something.

• 1:03:14Speaker 01

  No, but you could, um.

• 1:03:16Theo Von?

You could do, would you ever do Mabu, you think? La Mabu?

• 1:03:19Speaker 01

Oh, my god, dude, that is fucking funny. That's an alternate time. I'm him in an alternate timeline. Yeah, cuz you know, I used to, I used to.

• 1:03:25Theo Von?

Well, you know, there's two ways you could have gone. That's what we like to say a lot of times.

• 1:03:28Speaker 01

Yeah, that's me in an alternate timeline.

• 1:03:30Theo Von?

  I love him, bro.

• 1:03:31Speaker 01

I don't know enough about him. I know he's from New York, though.

• 1:03:33Theo Von?

You're right. You know, it's a great point. I don't fucking know if I like him. He could be a dirtball, but I like, uh, I like some of his energy, dude. Some of his shit is pretty hot.

• 1:03:40Speaker 01

It's very Bob Dylan, man. Just be who you want to be.

• 1:03:42Theo Von?

That's a good point. That's how I do feel about him. It's like, oh, I feel like, I feel like he's kind of unique. He kind of reminds me of like an Eminem, like when Eminem kind of like. He reminds me like how Eminem was just unique in his time period.

• 1:03:54Speaker 01

Maybe I'll do a little Mabu biopic. I don't know what it's about. I wonder what the tragedy of his life is.

• 1:03:57Theo Von?

That's a good point. It could be some crypto failure.

• 1:04:00Speaker 01

  Yeah, he launched Mabu coin.

• 1:04:02Theo Von?

Oh, he's gonna be so pissed at us, dude.

• 1:04:03Speaker 01

  Man.

• 1:04:04Theo Von?

  Bro, no, dude.

• 1:04:05Speaker 01

  Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. I mean, he's clearly killing it.

• 1:04:08Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:08Speaker 01

If he wasn't killing it, we wouldn't be talking about him.

• 1:04:10Theo Von?

That's a good point. Oh, I think he's just, he's definitely super entertaining. Yeah, and we're just joking around.

• 1:04:15Speaker 01

And he started that um, conservation fund.

• 1:04:19Theo Von?

  Did he really?

• 1:04:20Speaker 01

For the, for that uh, thing I'm just fucking with you. I'm sorry.

• 1:04:23Theo Von?

Bro, you're acting good, bro. Dude, you should be a politician, dude. You're good.

• 1:04:28Speaker 01

  Ah, I was acting.

• 1:04:29Theo Von?

Um, but what, or that, or maybe Abraham Lincoln's son or whatever?

• 1:04:33Speaker 01

I could be Abraham Lin, me or you?

• 1:04:34Theo Von?

  You.

• 1:04:35Speaker 01

  What about if you?

• 1:04:36Theo Von?

Abraham Lincoln's son? Who was Abraham Lincoln's son?

• 1:04:38Speaker 01

  Dave Lincoln.

• 1:04:39Theo Von?

  That's a ridiculous idea.

• 1:04:40Speaker 01

  It was Dave Lincoln.

• 1:04:41Theo Von?

  Was it?

• 1:04:42Speaker 01

  Dave Lincoln.

• 1:04:43Theo Von?

Oh, is it really? Or Ricky Lincoln? Bring, who is his son?

• 1:04:49Theo Von?

  Tad Lincoln. Oh my god.

• 1:04:51Speaker 01

  Yeah, oh yeah.

• 1:04:52Theo Von?

Go to his information. Let's see him. Wow, that's, dude, you could be Tad Lincoln. The fourth son of Abraham Lincoln.

• 1:04:59Speaker 01

What was his uh, born with a cleft lip and palate. I'll work with Tim Monik.

• 1:05:04Theo Von?

  We were talking about earlier.

• 1:05:04Speaker 01

I'll work with Tim Monik on it, you know, and hopefully there's no strike.

• 1:05:07Theo Von?

Imagine his father gave some of the greatest speeches and here he is, and he has this kind of like a little bit of a um, like a disfigurement or some impairment. And he's like, how do I overcome this?

• 1:05:16Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:05:17Theo Von?

To say something as important that my father said.

• 1:05:19Speaker 01

Did he ever? Did he ever?

• 1:05:20Theo Von?

  Um.

• 1:05:21Speaker 01

We could change it. We could just give him the speech.

• 1:05:23Theo Von?

They were considered notorious hellions, him and his brother Willie.

• 1:05:26Speaker 01

He was sick a lot. He got um, typhoid. A lot of people were getting sick back then.

• 1:05:30Theo Von?

Yeah, oh, easily. You caught a frisbee that was dirty and you were down for two months.

• 1:05:34Speaker 01

He went, he went to see Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp.

• 1:05:38Theo Von?

Oh wow, in April fourteenth, eighteen sixty-five, Tad went to Grover's Theater to play Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp, while his parents attended the performance of Tom Taylor's play, Our American Cousin, at Ford Theater. That night, his father was assassinated. Wow, so he was at?

• 1:05:50Speaker 01

That'll be, that could be my big scene.

• 1:05:52Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:53Speaker 01

  Oh, his dad.

• 1:05:53Theo Von?

And you finally run up to him as he's, and you say something super important.

• 1:05:57Speaker 01

  Who's playing Abraham Lincoln?

• 1:05:58Theo Von?

  Huh?

• 1:05:58Speaker 01

  Who's playing Lincoln?

• 1:06:00Theo Von?

I don't know, we gotta get somebody good.

• 1:06:02Speaker 01

Pa's dead. I can hardly believe that I should never see him. This is some heavy shit. After the assassination, Mary Robert and Tad lived together in Chicago. He died at 18, dude. I can't, come on.

• 1:06:12Theo Von?

  Oh.

• 1:06:13Speaker 01

  Holy shit, tuberculosis.

• 1:06:15Theo Von?

This was a waste of pitch. This is a waste of a pitch right here.

• 1:06:18Speaker 01

  And congestive heart failure.

• 1:06:20Theo Von?

  You could do it, man.

• 1:06:21Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:06:22Theo Von?

I think you could do it, you know?

• 1:06:23Speaker 01

Age me down a little bit.

• 1:06:24Theo Von?

Or Jim Carrey. I think I could see you playing a Jim Carrey one day, too. I was thinking about that.

• 1:06:27Speaker 01

  He's brilliant, dude. I mean.

• 1:06:28Theo Von?

  He's so brilliant.

• 1:06:29Speaker 01

Yeah, he, uh, have you seen his, um, have you seen his, uh, he went to some fashion event, like 2018, 2019? You see this red carpet interview? It's the biggest not give a fuck interview.

• 1:06:38Theo Von?

  Is it?

• 1:06:39Speaker 01

Of all time. Yeah, if we have enough time, we should add 20 minutes to this anyway if we can't. This is, this is the greatest.

• 1:06:44Theo Von?

He looks so dropped into being himself.

• 1:06:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:06:46Speaker 03

Yes. I've covered a lot of fashion weeks. This is the first time I've run into Jim Carrey. Wait, tell me, are you sure you're wandering the streets? You need a date to the party? What's up?

• 1:06:56Speaker 04

No, no, no. I'm, I'm, I'm doing just fine. Uh, I just, uh, you know, there's no meaning to any of this. So I, I wanted to find the most meaningless thing that I could come to and join. And, uh, and, uh, and here I am.

• 1:07:10Speaker 03

  They're celebrating.

• 1:07:11Speaker 04

I mean, you gotta admit, it's completely meaningless.

• 1:07:13Speaker 03

Well, they say they're celebrating icons inside. Do you believe in icons?

• 1:07:17Speaker 04

Boy, that is just the absolute lowest aiming, you know, possibility that we could come up with. It's like icons. What do you, do you believe in icons? I don't believe in personalities. I don't believe that you exist, but there is a wonderful fragrance in the air.

• 1:07:34Speaker 03

  You don't believe certain icons?

• 1:07:35Theo Von?

Even when she doesn't exist, he's still trying to flirt.

• 1:07:37Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:07:39Speaker 03

Fire others? Artist tree? You're one of them.

• 1:07:42Speaker 04

  On the good foot. Ha!

• 1:07:44Theo Von?

  He's like, you're invisible, but let's smash.

• 1:07:49Speaker 04

Yeah, no, I, uh, I don't believe in icons.

• 1:07:51Theo Von?

  That's good, man.

• 1:07:52Speaker 04

  I don't believe in personalities.

• 1:07:54Theo Von?

That would be an interesting guy to play, because that's really cool. That's a cool scene to play if you could do that.

• 1:07:59Speaker 01

And he's had a crazy life.

• 1:08:00Theo Von?

Yeah, what his life was like.

• 1:08:01Speaker 01

Yeah. I mean, he was the biggest, biggest.

• 1:08:04Theo Von?

  Bigger than anything.

• 1:08:04Speaker 01

Bigger than anything, right? In the 2000s?

• 1:08:06Theo Von?

Oh, yeah. And he had a show called In Living Color before that, that was like Jamie Foxx was on it.

• 1:08:11Speaker 01

Yeah, he was like the only white guy on it.

• 1:08:12Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:12Speaker 01

  Right?

• 1:08:12Theo Von?

It was him, yeah, and they had a, um, uh.

• 1:08:15Speaker 01

  Now he's becoming an artist.

• 1:08:16Theo Von?

Yeah, now he's an artist. But it's just interesting to get all the art out of your system, you know? Because some artists.

• 1:08:21Speaker 01

I think that's kind of what he, I think that's what he feels like. I saw an interview with him today, Sonic the Hedgehog. They said, why'd you do this? He said, for the money.

• 1:08:29Speaker 01

What a life, because when Bruce Almighty was coming on, I mean, really, he was like the biggest.

• 1:08:33Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:08:34Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:08:34Theo Von?

What about, do you feel like you have to be like, because you're kind of like the, the, the, the it guy, like the it younger guy in Hollywood.

• 1:08:44Speaker 01

  For sure, for sure.

• 1:08:45Theo Von?

  You know?

• 1:08:48Theo Von?

But does that feel like, I don't know, and I know, it's like, do you, how do you, and a lot of that is, a lot of times curtailed by like the industry, like you're,

• 1:08:56Speaker 01

  Yeah, of course.

• 1:08:57Theo Von?

Like, you have a, you have like, I thought you'd come with like, in a tank or something, like you drove over here by yourself.

• 1:09:02Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:09:03Theo Von?

So definitely, um, kind of, I guess, maybe against what I was thinking, which doesn't mean anything. But do you worry about how do you still be yourself and find yourself at a time when you could be so maneuvered by, um, so many bigger?

• 1:09:18Speaker 01

Listen, man, not to bring you back to the movie, but that's where Bob Dylan's so influential to me, too.

• 1:09:21Theo Von?

  No, this is perfect.

• 1:09:22Speaker 01

No, because Bob always followed his path, and what's, what's interesting about the movie industry instead, like as opposed to the music industry, the music industry, you write your own music, you know? And it's direct to the consumer in some sense, like you do whatever the fuck you want, and if people are vibing with it, you'll know and whatever. In the movie industry, you do kind of have to, there, you, you, you gotta be reliable, you know? A musician, you show up whenever you want, they could be a rock star, they show up four hours late, if you're three hours late to a movie, they gotta call insurance, you cost a million dollars, now you'll never work again. So there's a part of the job that's obedient in a sense, but the best art and the best shit we see is stuff that, you know, is-

• 1:09:58Theo Von?

  People showed up for.

• 1:09:59Speaker 01

People showed up, but, but also where they, they broke rules in a sense, you know? I was just talking to, you know?

• 1:10:03Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:10:04Speaker 01

Yeah, and, and, and, so it's a fine line, and I, I look at it like this, this is my inner Tom Cruise, where I want movies to be seen, and I don't wanna, I don't wanna live an unobedient life, but I also want, at a time where maybe Hollywood or a movie maker's got a perception of like, Sometimes being out of touch or something, or definitely like awards type movies. I want especially a movie about Bob Dylan. I want in all the movies I work on, that's why I did Dune, that's why I did Wonka. And I'm proud that those movies, I know I'm not supposed to pat myself on the back, but I'm, those movies were big, you know, like in the movie industry or the movie business, brick and mortar theaters. They don't, they don't do the business they once did. Some of that's inevitable because of streaming.

• 1:10:47Speaker 01

But I want to put my best foot forward. You gotta, you gotta give back to the industry that gave to you. That's really my MO and that's why I'm, that's why I'm here, that, you know, you know. Otherwise, that's why you can't be the reclusive figure that Bob Dylan or Daniel Day Lewis or these guys were. Cause the, the, it's not about the bottom line, but the, the attention isn't guaranteed the way it used to be. You know what I mean? I hope this doesn't sound like too inside baseball or whatever.

• 1:11:12Theo Von?

I want inside baseball. I just, you know, you're like a real thinker, you know? So it's not like you're going to give some answer that isn't traveling through your thoughts and you explaining stuff. So that's perfect. There's no wrong way to answer it. It's a weird thing. It's like, yeah, and then.

• 1:11:26Speaker 01

Also, I had a full ass real life before my career took off, like in the East Village in New York. So, not that my life isn't real now, but like obviously on these press tours and stuff, the days are micromanaged in some way, but man. You, here's the thing, that's another thing I say, like as a musician or as a pop star, whatever, your music can be about your erosion of humanity. Like it could be about, hey, I'm driving this car and this is the crazy lifestyle of, but if you're an actor, if you, if you lose your sense of humanity, if you lose your stink, for lack of a better word, people will see that on screen. You do see it on screen.

• 1:12:00Theo Von?

Oh, you seem too fancy. You seem out of touch.

• 1:12:01Speaker 01

Well, people are gonna know. That's why the Safdie movie I just did, man, he put me, he put me through the wringer.

• 1:12:06Theo Von?

  Really?

• 1:12:06Speaker 01

Oh, yeah. And I felt like, I felt like he was testing me early on.

• 1:12:09Theo Von?

What does that mean? So when somebody's like, so a director can kind of put you through some fucking shit?

• 1:12:13Speaker 01

Yeah, Josh knew me since I was 21.

• 1:12:17Theo Von?

  Josh Safdie?

• 1:12:17Speaker 01

  Safdie. I was 21.

• 1:12:18Theo Von?

Uncut Gems, that's, that's that movie, right?

• 1:12:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:12:20Theo Von?

That's one of the best movies.

• 1:12:22Speaker 01

There you go, man. And good, and good time. You know, good time with Robert Pattinson. He directed too.

• 1:12:26Theo Von?

I haven't seen that. I'm saving Robert Pattinson for after, for later.

• 1:12:29Speaker 01

Yeah, for sure, for sure. But, um, you know, like early on, we had stuff that could have been stunt guys on this movie, on, on Marty Supreme. And I saw him wanting me to do it. And part of me is like, this feels like a test, you know, and I wanted to show him. And then now I feel like I've emerged from the other side with no broken bones or whatever. Thank God, but. And Josh, I know I'm supposed to be talking about the Bob Dylan movie, but Josh is like-

• 1:12:50Theo Von?

It's okay, it's all you acting.

• 1:12:51Speaker 01

Yeah, Josh is the real deal, man, like, and seriously, like Josh Savvy, he's like the modern day Scorsese.

• 1:12:57Theo Von?

Dang, I wanna meet that guy.

• 1:12:58Speaker 01

Oh dude, you would love him.

• 1:13:00Theo Von?

  That's him?

• 1:13:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:13:01Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:13:03Theo Von?

I would like to meet him. Dude, he could play Abraham Lincoln.

• 1:13:06Speaker 01

  He could play Abraham Lincoln.

• 1:13:07Theo Von?

  And you play Tad Lincoln.

• 1:13:08Speaker 01

I could play Tad Lincoln, tell him right now. His brother's an actor, Benny. You ever see, um, you saw the Nathan Fielder Show with Emma Stone on Showtime? No, maybe not. That's his brother.

• 1:13:16Theo Von?

  I've seen Nathan Fielder Show.

• 1:13:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:13:18Theo Von?

  Wow, that's cool.

• 1:13:19Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:13:20Theo Von?

Wow, that must have been awesome, man. Because he's a, that guy, that, that on cut, Jim's is so good. I look forward to seeing that.

• 1:13:25Speaker 01

Yeah, this is a crazy, crazy fucking movie.

• 1:13:28Theo Von?

So directors can do that, so sometimes it's like that, it's gonna be a journey.

• 1:13:31Speaker 01

It's gonna be a journey, yeah, and-

• 1:13:33Theo Von?

What was the biggest journey through the, um, through the, um, unknown, I just wanna get the name of it, right?

• 1:13:38Speaker 01

  A complete unknown, Christmas Day.

• 1:13:40Theo Von?

Through, um, what was, yeah, leave it like that. What was the biggest journey through a complete unknown on Christmas Day?

• 1:13:46Speaker 01

Yeah, it's kinda, you know, the biggest-

• 1:13:48Theo Von?

  Talk Christmas Day.

• 1:13:49Speaker 01

Yeah, it's just Christmas, it's only on Christmas, you can see it comes out on Christmas Day. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, biggest journey was the music and the voice, and also I'd never had my phone off the entire movie. I had three months-

• 1:13:59Theo Von?

You had your phone off the whole movie?

• 1:14:00Speaker 01

Yeah, I had three months to play this guy, and then the rest of my life I'd never get to play him again, so I just, I was, I was locked in. Also,

• 1:14:08Speaker 01

you're never supposed to say you're competitive, but I want, you know, there's been a lot of music biopics.

• 1:14:13Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:14Speaker 01

And I wanted to do a great fucking job, man. I love Bob Dylan. I love this artist. None of this is for granted. This little misconception about actors too, in acting, you can have a cushy job on a TV show, if you don't give a fuck about your work, it could be a great lifestyle, right? You're making like, high six figures, maybe low seven figures, and you're just showing up when you want. If you give a fuck about what you're doing, these are, these are long ass days. You know what I mean? These are 14 hour days, six days a week sometimes, you know, three months. Look, I know, I know people got it way harder, but I wanna feel that grit, you know, I, I wanna feel it, you know, I hope people don't laugh at it. I fucking really, I feel like I'm the hardest working man. Um, anyway, maybe I shouldn't say that, but, uh, but-

• 1:14:52Theo Von?

No, you respect what you do.

• 1:14:54Speaker 01

Yeah, cuz you got to. What else is the point? I talk about this with friends a lot, like, this is too weird a lifestyle to be-

• 1:15:01Theo Von?

  Nonchalant about.

• 1:15:02Speaker 01

  Yeah, why do this?

• 1:15:03Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:04Speaker 01

If you're not gonna go as hard as possible.

• 1:15:06Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:07Speaker 01

On Marty Supreme, I'm wearing contacts. Cause he wanted my eyes to be little.

• 1:15:11Theo Von?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:15:12Speaker 01

So he gives me real glasses that fuck my eyes up. And I'm wearing contacts underneath to offset what the glasses are doing. And my vision was, my vision was basically fucked up until a day ago. Every time I took these glasses off, my, my vision was skewed.

• 1:15:25Theo Von?

  Wow.

• 1:15:26Speaker 01

  You know, um.

• 1:15:27Theo Von?

You're like the Forrest Gump of sight or whatever.

• 1:15:29Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, right, sort of. Dude, Forrest Gump is a, we had the Forrest Gump ping pong coaches. Same lovely couple in LA, Diego and Wei. Been married forty years, Wei is a Chinese ping pong champion.

• 1:15:40Theo Von?

  Nuh-uh.

• 1:15:40Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, from the eighties.

• 1:15:41Theo Von?

  She pretty cool?

• 1:15:42Speaker 01

She was, she's like, we would train. Yeah, Wei, Wei Li, there she is. There she is.

• 1:15:48Theo Von?

  Marty Supreme.

• 1:15:49Speaker 01

That's my ping pong coach. You know, we trained for three hours and then she said, let's play for real. And she's like, she's probably like ninety-seven pounds.

• 1:15:55Theo Von?

  Oh.

• 1:15:56Speaker 01

She's like five foot one and she's just like, yeah. Unbelievable, you're not getting a point across.

• 1:16:00Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:01Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah, that's beautiful.

• 1:16:02Speaker 01

  A little bit of that.

• 1:16:03Theo Von?

Do you, um, yeah, did you have to, so your phone was off for that long? So you just locked in and what would you do, just go to, do you sleep on set? Or what do you do? What's that like?

• 1:16:12Speaker 01

I just sleep on set and you know, method acting, that gets like a bad rap. People think it's just like a person being a prick and obliging everyone around them to subscribe to a reality that's not real. The, the thing I came up with, I call it.

• 1:16:22Theo Von?

Oh dude, that's just everybody's stepdad as well, you know?

• 1:16:24Speaker 01

  Exactly, exactly.

• 1:16:26Theo Von?

Yeah, that's method acting, I need a bear.

• 1:16:28Speaker 01

Yeah, exactly, and you, yeah, and, uh, yeah.

• 1:16:30Theo Von?

  Damn it.

• 1:16:32Speaker 01

Give me that goddamn Miller Lite. But, uh, but, uh, dude, I call it, I call it method energy. Because, um, you know, you, you know, uh, you could shit on me too if I'm coming off like a dick. But, um, you know, um, I just tried to, no cell phones, nothing that reminds you of the present. Um, and try to treat it like Bob Dylan as much as possible. Especially you're playing somebody that iconic, that was tough too. He didn't feel like an icon when he was himself, he was just living his fucking life. So if you talk to too many people that, uh, you gotta avoid earworms.

• 1:17:02Theo Von?

Oh, like if somebody put in something in your head that's, that says in there?

• 1:17:05Speaker 01

Yeah, that's why Edward Norton, I love him, he's great, Pete's in the movie, but he's like, Edward Norton is a little bit his character in the movie Birdman, if you ever saw that. He's like a very confident, opinionated actor. So I would kinda have to, you know.

• 1:17:18Speaker 01

And then he caught me watching Rounders one day.

• 1:17:19Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:17:20Speaker 01

And then he, then it was over. Then he knew he had me.

• 1:17:23Theo Von?

That's like, yeah, if you're watching another movie, that's a movie that some guys in here like that.

• 1:17:26Speaker 01

He caught me, he made me go, "Oh, you like Rounders?" And I was like, "All right, now, now we're gonna talk."

• 1:17:30Theo Von?

Oh, hold me for a second, huh?

• 1:17:32Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:17:32Theo Von?

  That's a lot.

• 1:17:34Speaker 01

I'm still jumping on you at the end of this.

• 1:17:35Theo Von?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:17:36Speaker 01

  Get ready.

• 1:17:37Theo Von?

Long as it's on the front, brother.

• 1:17:38Speaker 01

  Yeah, get ready. Get ready.

• 1:17:40Theo Von?

  Calm down, man.

• 1:17:40Speaker 01

  Get ready, get ready.

• 1:17:41Theo Von?

Just getting a little too Hollywood for real.

• 1:17:44Speaker 01

I'm getting you at your comfort zone.

• 1:17:46Theo Von?

I've, I've been out of my comfort zones since I was born.

• 1:17:48Speaker 01

  All right, fair, fair, fair.

• 1:17:50Theo Von?

I, yeah, I never subscribed to it. I never, or I never got the keys, whatever. You know the code they give you in high school to your locker?

• 1:17:55Speaker 01

  Yeah, you never got that.

• 1:17:56Theo Von?

I remember going up to my comfort zone and being like, "Oh, I don't think this is it."

• 1:17:59Speaker 01

What's the most comfortable you've ever felt in your life?

• 1:18:00Theo Von?

Oh, that's a great question, the most comfortable.

• 1:18:03Speaker 01

Like most in your body, no drugs, no alcohol?

• 1:18:05Theo Von?

Hmm, probably after like a sauna and ice bath type of, type of thing.

• 1:18:09Speaker 01

  Oh, you do ice baths?

• 1:18:10Theo Von?

Yeah, yeah, I'll get in there, dude. I'll, oh, yeah. I'll frickin' just, I'll lay in a polar bear's ass, brother. I like it, I like it like that.

• 1:18:18Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:18:18Theo Von?

I like it just brisk like that, you know? I love that.

• 1:18:21Speaker 01

Would you go to the Arctic?

• 1:18:22Theo Von?

Oh, yeah, I would go up there. Mr. Beast just went up there. He went to Antarctica.

• 1:18:27Speaker 01

  Whoa.

• 1:18:27Theo Von?

I don't know what he, but he said it was nothing up there. There's not even like, you can't be like, "Hey, let's go somewhere," and like, no, you can't.

• 1:18:33Speaker 01

I don't get how that stuff works, man. Where's he get, where's he get the money?

• 1:18:37Theo Von?

  He's just...

• 1:18:38Speaker 01

  He's just huge, huh?

• 1:18:38Theo Von?

I guess. He just has a lot of just expendable income to be that guy, you know?

• 1:18:42Speaker 01

That's the other thing, like, where I wanna be humble about putting movies out there. People's attention or elsewhere is elsewhere now.

• 1:18:48Theo Von?

  It's quick.

• 1:18:49Speaker 01

Yeah, and you gotta convince someone to see A Complete Unknown on Christmas Day and take the fifteen dollars or twenty, whatever the fuck it is now. And instead of watching, uh, you know, Mr. Beast in the Arctic.

• 1:19:00Theo Von?

Well, Mr. Beast has a show actually that comes out right before that, if like a week before, but, but, um, he was just, we were just talking about it the other day. And it's interesting, yeah.

• 1:19:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:19:08Theo Von?

And it's an interesting show, totally different though. But one thing that's great about your movie is that, first of all, you just get, you also just, in addition to whatever's going on with the movie, you get to hear like great music.

• 1:19:17Speaker 01

Yeah, it's great music, great, great music.

• 1:19:19Theo Von?

It's great music. You get to remember like, um, Woody Guthrie.

• 1:19:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:19:23Theo Von?

Who played Woody Guthrie in it?

• 1:19:24Speaker 01

  Scoot McNary, he's amazing.

• 1:19:25Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:26Speaker 01

  He's amazing. I didn't get...

• 1:19:27Theo Von?

Pull a picture of him, Scoot McNary. Get a look at him before something happens to him.

• 1:19:30Speaker 01

Yeah, and he, and he doesn't have a line in the movie. He doesn't have a line, cuz he's cuz he's so sick. Cuz he's so sick.

• 1:19:38Theo Von?

That was pretty awesome. Yeah, we had Bernie Sanders on and he was saying that um, he said Pete Seeger was one of his favorite.

• 1:19:43Speaker 01

Scoot McNary could play Bernie Sanders in a biopic.

• 1:19:45Theo Von?

  Oh, he could.

• 1:19:46Speaker 01

  Right?

• 1:19:46Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:47Speaker 01

  Totally could.

• 1:19:47Theo Von?

Dude, you could play Ronald Reagan's son Ricky Reagan or whatever.

• 1:19:50Speaker 01

Is that a real guy? Is that a real guy?

• 1:19:52Theo Von?

  Probably, dude.

• 1:19:53Speaker 01

  Bernie Bernie hasn't aged.

• 1:19:55Theo Von?

Nah, Bernie still looks the same. He's the bastard.

• 1:19:57Speaker 01

He's looked the same in the last, yeah. He's like a real folk hero.

• 1:20:02Theo Von?

  Great point.

• 1:20:03Speaker 01

  Yeah, Bernie is is.

• 1:20:04Theo Von?

  He is a folk hero.

• 1:20:05Speaker 01

  Yeah, he's folk music.

• 1:20:06Theo Von?

Yeah, and you also forget about like what, yeah, I mean, that's another thing about the movie. You see the challenge of Bob Dylan like take on like music and culture. There's this whole other cultural thing that's kind of happening in the background, like on the television and the news during the movie.

• 1:20:18Speaker 01

It was a crazy time. It was like the, it was the.

• 1:20:20Theo Von?

It was a cool piece of life.

• 1:20:21Speaker 01

It was a cool piece of life. The 60s were a cool time.

• 1:20:23Theo Von?

When you get out of it all and it's done.

• 1:20:25Speaker 01

I was beat on this one.

• 1:20:26Theo Von?

  Were you?

• 1:20:27Speaker 01

  Yeah, I was.

• 1:20:27Theo Von?

What does that really look like, a break? Do you go to like a beach and just?

• 1:20:30Speaker 01

No, another thing, another misconception about movies, like as opposed to the academic year, it kind of winds down. You're never winding down in a movie. You're doing 14 hour days and you go off a cliff, then it's done. You know, in other words, you don't, you don't, you don't relax towards the, towards the end. Like it, you know, we were doing a very important scene and it was done forever, you know? And uh, yeah, I guess I relaxed a little bit. I went on vacation, but I was beat. I've been working, I was working on this for five years. This was like, um, this was like, this was as important to me as you going to the parking lot and spying on the, on the, on the swim team of Lipscomb College.

• 1:21:00Theo Von?

  Nothing to say here.

• 1:21:02Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:21:04Theo Von?

  I'm just recruiting, guys.

• 1:21:05Speaker 01

Recruiting production assistants, but um, but uh.

• 1:21:08Theo Von?

Do you uh, so it was, do you think you would have done it more justice five years earlier?

• 1:21:14Speaker 01

Absolutely not. Also cuz I had the experience in my life where I would do interviews and, you know, it's a scary time to come up with the internet and stuff. You know, you want to get it right. And Bob Dylan, his early press conferences, he was confrontational. He was basically a dick. And I thought there was something really inspiring about that. Not, not that I ever wanted to be like that, but I just thought it's so different than how people are now.

• 1:21:34Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:35Speaker 01

  Were you, were you uh?

• 1:21:36Theo Von?

Right, you're just automatically cordial. You just assume like.

• 1:21:38Speaker 01

Well, you gotta be, man. A, A, I am.

• 1:21:41Theo Von?

  Pretty cordial guy.

• 1:21:42Speaker 01

Yeah, but B, um. God forbid, you know, you don't want to be, anyway, so, but he's, these early press conferences, you know, if, uh, if you're tremendously bored and not watching Mr. B stuff, watch the, the, the early Bob Dylan San Francisco press conferences, you know, and I just thought, so anyway, five years, working on it, I got a better sense on the other side of it, oh, this is why he would have carried himself like that, you know, he had some wherewithal I didn't have in his early twenties, where somebody said, "How do you do it?" He goes, basically, he didn't want to tell anyone, you know, me, maybe because, uh, whatever, the acting bone, somebody says, "How do you do it?" And you, you, you're so desperate for that pound on your back, and you go, "This is how I did it," you know, yeah, yeah.

• 1:22:19Theo Von?

Yeah, I just wanted, yeah, cause, and you get more experience that you can put into something, like you were saying earlier about acting, like you can keep doing it for a long time, you know?

• 1:22:25Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:22:26Theo Von?

Um, yo, can we hear any Bob? Is that a weird thing to ask you, dude? Is that lame?

• 1:22:31Speaker 01

  Like, like, live, right now?

• 1:22:32Theo Von?

  I'll try it.

• 1:22:33Speaker 01

  Go for it.

• 1:22:34Theo Von?

  Alright.

• 1:22:40Theo Von?

Hold on, let me try it one more time. Hey, who's there? Hold on, uh, I gotta give it.

• 1:22:46Speaker 01

Get into it, man, get into it.

• 1:22:48Theo Von?

Hey, who's at the door? That's horrible.

• 1:22:51Speaker 01

That was pretty good, you got the nasality down, you got the nasality.

• 1:22:55Theo Von?

Make up a word, you're verifying things, and that's what Bob Dylan did.

• 1:22:58Speaker 01

Yeah, exactly, he just made shit up, that was good, man.

• 1:23:01Theo Von?

  He verified things, didn't he?

• 1:23:02Speaker 01

I don't think, I, I'm trying to think who your music biopic would be, still.

• 1:23:06Theo Von?

It might have to be, um...

• 1:23:07Speaker 01

  What about Chet Baker?

• 1:23:09Theo Von?

  I would do Chet Baker.

• 1:23:11Speaker 01

  Chet Baker, or, um...

• 1:23:12Theo Von?

  Chet Hanks, even.

• 1:23:14Speaker 01

You should do that Chet Hanks biopic, dude, that would be unbelievable, that's a, that's a glitch in the system.

• 1:23:20Theo Von?

  Yeah, it's all, everything is.

• 1:23:22Speaker 01

  Yeah, everything's a glitch, dude.

• 1:23:23Theo Von?

Jon Bon Jovi, it could be anybody, Chet has a new country album that's gonna come out this year, too, I think, or next year.

• 1:23:28Speaker 01

Dude, you gotta play Chet, also, it'd be a great excuse to get shredded.

• 1:23:31Theo Von?

Now, that would be, I would just do it for the head.

• 1:23:33Speaker 01

Just do it for that, they'll send you the best trainers, you get the HGH.

• 1:23:37Theo Von?

I could do it, man. Um, I'm trying to think if there's anything else that we want to ask or anything else that you wanted to say, Timothy?

• 1:23:43Speaker 01

Ah, man, no, just thanks for having me on. I'm trying to think, um.

• 1:23:47Theo Von?

Think we kind of covered a lot of these stuff.

• 1:23:48Speaker 01

I think we covered it all, man.

• 1:23:50Theo Von?

Yeah, I gotta water my plants, dude. I just got home.

• 1:23:52Speaker 01

Wait, you have a place in LA?

• 1:23:54Theo Von?

Yeah, I still have an apartment here.

• 1:23:54Speaker 01

Oh, you do? Is it here?

• 1:23:55Theo Von?

  Over in Westwood.

• 1:23:56Speaker 01

In Westwood, alright, nice. I love Westwood.

• 1:23:58Theo Von?

And so, yeah, I get my plants.

• 1:23:58Speaker 01

  You go to Diddy Reece?

• 1:24:00Theo Von?

And I forget, yeah, I go over there sometimes. I go walk over there and sometimes I would go for that and I would just end up getting a bunch of vapes and just sitting over in my car. But, um, I, uh, yeah, I would get, I just, sometimes I forget to wash my plant, wa- wa- I forget to water my plants, you know? And then I get home and it's been like a month or something.

• 1:24:16Speaker 01

Your place is ready to be wifeified, man.

• 1:24:18Theo Von?

I know. And I always water them. I'll be like, "Your mother, your mother left us." I'll yell shit like that. I'll be like, "Your mother left."

• 1:24:24Speaker 01
