Go and ask any serious whitetail hunter what the best time of the year is to be out in a tree. And it's not a holiday, okay? The best time is not already on your calendar. It's the rut. It's the two or three week window that serious deer hunters plan everything else around. And OnX Hunt's rut calendar does this for you and helps take the guesswork out of your planning. It tracks the different phases of the rut as they move through your area. So you know when to book the time off, when to have the whole camp locked in and ready, or conversely, when it's still too early to burn out your best spots. You only get so many rut hunts in your life.

• 3:51Steven Rinella?

By God, we're joined here by everybody's favorite Kentuckian, the madman from the LBL. In the Clark's River Bottoms.

• 4:01Steven Rinella?

  Kevin Murphy. Don't forget that.

• 4:04Speaker 05

  Cares.

• 4:06Steven Rinella?

Ladies and gentlemen, Kevin Murphy, joining us here in South Texas, sitting with a fruitcake in front of him.

• 4:13Speaker 05

Fruitcake made by my master gunsmith and duck call maker, Hambone, his daughter made that. That's a Christmas tradition at their family that she makes fruitcakes and he hands them out to his friends, so.

• 4:28Steven Rinella?

So your buddy Hambone makes, fixes guns, makes fruitcake, his daughter makes fruitcakes and he makes duck calls?

• 4:34Speaker 05

Hambone can do anything. He is a oilfield mechanic.

• 4:39Speaker 06

  It's a family business.

• 4:40Steven Rinella?

  Oilfield mechanic.

• 4:41Speaker 05

  Oilfield mechanic.

• 4:42Steven Rinella?

He made these metal reed duck calls.

• 4:44Speaker 05

  Metal reed.

• 4:45Steven Rinella?

This got a metal, Hambone, um, where's the, what?

• 4:48Speaker 06

  That one.

• 4:49Steven Rinella?

Hambone made this. I call it the FFD design.

• 4:58Speaker 07

Do you want to explain what that?

• 4:59Speaker 04

We'll leave that to the audience to figure out.

• 5:02Speaker 06

I tuned it, I tuned it to my liking.

• 5:09Steven Rinella?

  That's.

• 5:10Speaker 07

I don't think he likes it.

• 5:11Steven Rinella?

I wish I should go get mine.

• 5:13Speaker 06

  I tuned it.

• 5:13Steven Rinella?

You tuned it to your liking?

• 5:14Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 5:18Steven Rinella?

  Let me see.

• 5:19Speaker 07

  That sounds good.

• 5:20Steven Rinella?

  Yeah.

• 5:25Speaker 06

  Too much air coming out.

• 5:25Speaker 07

You're letting too much air escape.

• 5:27Steven Rinella?

I'm letting too much escape now?

• 5:29Speaker 07

Yeah, cause it's hitting your mic.

• 5:34Speaker 06

  That's good.

• 5:34Speaker 07

  That's better.

• 5:35Speaker 05

  Good.

• 5:37Steven Rinella?

Yeah, it's got a metal reed in it. Hambone made that.

• 5:40Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 5:41Steven Rinella?

Uh, okay, Kevin, you're here, we're gonna, we're gonna do, you're gonna, we're gonna get your feedback on a bunch of things. I want you to tell about, uh, I want, and I want you to pitch your, your habitat restoration project.

• 5:51Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 5:52Steven Rinella?

Which is, I read it as the war against dudes that like wakeboarding.

• 5:57Speaker 05

  Uh.

• 5:58Steven Rinella?

It's, it's fine to call it like it is, dude. Let's call it like it is.

• 6:02Speaker 05

This is what I call it.

• 6:03Steven Rinella?

Your wake boat, your wake boat is killing Kevin's fishery. Let's call it like it is.

• 6:09Speaker 05

No, it's more than that. It's, it's the.

• 6:11Steven Rinella?

  It's worse than that.

• 6:12Speaker 05

The, I'm not gonna say war, it's the.

• 6:15Steven Rinella?

  Conflict.

• 6:16Speaker 05

Cure against recreational boating that has destroyed our button bush habitat along the, our lake shore of Lake Barkley.

• 6:27Steven Rinella?

I'm gonna make a T-shirt that says, "Your wakeboard is killing my fish."

• 6:34Speaker 06

  I believe it.

• 6:36Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 6:37Steven Rinella?

It's just, let's call it like it is. I probably got dear friends. You know, like when you use, like you say something bad, you like, some of my best friends are wakeboarders. I think they might be actually.

• 6:48Speaker 05

Well, it's the marinas best friends.

• 6:50Steven Rinella?

It's, but I think Travis Barton likes that stuff.

• 6:55Speaker 07

  Is a wakeboarder?

• 6:56Steven Rinella?

  Yeah.

• 6:57Speaker 07

He's one of those guys when I'm up there on Canyon Ferry trying to have a nice, nice peaceful day.

• 7:01Steven Rinella?

No, he goes back to, he goes back to Minnesota and destroys habitat.

• 7:05Speaker 07

  Just doing.

• 7:05Steven Rinella?

I might be wrong. He's a water skier, but he might not be a wakeboard, a wake boat guy.

• 7:11Speaker 06

Well, the difference between a water ski boat and a wakeboarding boat, that, that wake is 10 times bigger, you know?

• 7:17Steven Rinella?

Night and day. Yeah. I'm not gonna start beating up water skiers. I come from a long line of water skiers.

• 7:21Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 7:22Speaker 05

Well, they're part of the problem too. It's recreational boaters and marinas that, there used to be a Corps of Engineer plan that after July the 4th, they would start drawing the lake down.

• 7:35Steven Rinella?

  Mm-hmm.

• 7:35Speaker 05

Because Barclay Lake is a flood storage lake. That's why it was built after the 37 flood.

• 7:41Steven Rinella?

No, if we're just gonna get into this right now, let's get into this in a minute. Cause I need to, we need to tell the full story.

• 7:47Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 7:48Steven Rinella?

I just wanted to blame those guys. I was gonna wage war on stand-up paddleboarders, but I realized I don't have any reason to.

• 7:54Speaker 07

  They don't make a wake.

• 7:55Steven Rinella?

My only gripe with them was, I don't, when people start doing a thing that didn't used to exist, I always wondered what they were doing before it existed. Cause I don't do, the stuff I do, people have been doing since the beginning of time.

• 8:06Speaker 07

  Mm-hmm. Yeah.

• 8:08Steven Rinella?

Recreationally. So when stand-up paddleboarding became a thing, all I could think about was what were you doing before?

• 8:16Steven Rinella?

Pickleball. What were you doing before pickleball?

• 8:20Speaker 07

  The only thing.

• 8:22Speaker 05

  Table tennis?

• 8:23Steven Rinella?

  No.

• 8:24Speaker 05

  What do you mean no?

• 8:24Steven Rinella?

I don't think that those people that are playing, I don't think, when you see people playing pickleball, I don't think that a few years ago, they were playing table tennis.

• 8:32Speaker 06

  Or tennis in general.

• 8:33Steven Rinella?

I think they were watching TV.

• 8:35Speaker 07

Listen, my, not that I'm for stand-up paddleboarding, but just play devil's advocate.

• 8:41Steven Rinella?

Very controversial act of stand-up paddle.

• 8:43Speaker 07

Back, I don't, I mean, it's not my thing, but whatever. Um, back in the day when they were, when logging was heavy, heavy and they were floating logs down rivers.

• 8:53Steven Rinella?

  Yeah.

• 8:53Speaker 07

There was always a guy up there with a pole.

• 8:56Steven Rinella?

  The original sup.

• 8:56Speaker 07

That, that stood on the logs and, and made sure they all, so that's an argument for it.

• 9:03Steven Rinella?

  Just to irritate me.

• 9:04Speaker 07

Back in the day, they were doing it.

• 9:05Steven Rinella?

Just to irritate me, I think, just to irritate me, my wife went and bought our kids two stand up paddleboards. Just to stick it to me.

• 9:12Speaker 06

  Nice.

• 9:13Steven Rinella?

And now I gotta like store them and get them out and blow them up and move them around and tie them down to stuff.

• 9:19Speaker 07

He's like, nah, and I gotta use them every once in a while.

• 9:22Speaker 05

Yeah, so you've never paddleboarded them?

• 9:25Steven Rinella?

  No.

• 9:26Speaker 05

So what if you did it and like turns out you like?

• 9:27Steven Rinella?

Well, I gotta tie them on top of the car all the time for my kids.

• 9:31Speaker 07

That might be your thing when you retire.

• 9:32Steven Rinella?

Now people are gonna see me out in my yard are gonna be like, what a hypocrite.

• 9:38Speaker 06

I'm gonna see you on a lake just paddling around and enjoying yourself. And I'm gonna say, I wonder what he did before paddleboarding.

• 9:45Steven Rinella?

Yeah, what that guy used to do, watch TV all day long? Uh, here's a, here's a deal, here's a deal to chaw on.

• 9:54Steven Rinella?

We have long talked about, uh, at, at the podcast here, which has been airing for a century. Um, we've long talked about splitting.

• 10:06Steven Rinella?

We've long talked about splitting the show. Into news and commentary and interview, because now I know we'll have an interview guest on the show and he'll have to sit there. He doesn't know what that, let's say some anthropologist never listened to the show in his life. And, uh, he's here to talk about like, you know, Clovis research. And he's gotta sit there while we talk about the news and, and talk about stand up paddle boarding and Kevin Murphy's fruitcake. So the guy's just sitting there like, oh, you know, he doesn't know.

• 10:31Speaker 06

  Twiddling his thumbs, not.

• 10:32Steven Rinella?

Twiddling his thumbs, he feels like he's not in on the joke, whatever. So we talked about splitting the show. We're officially splitting the show. Starting in March. Starting in March, you're gonna see two versions of the Meat Eater Podcast pop up. You're gonna see Meat Eater Podcast is gonna be the news show, which is like news and commentary. Okay, we're gonna cover your news, we're gonna cover our news, we're gonna cover the news.

• 10:55Steven Rinella?

The second drop is going to be the interview show where we have on biologists, researchers, archaeologists, authors, now and then, I know everybody hates it, now and then a politician will come on the interview show and that'll be a weekly show. The interview show, the normal podcast where we interview experts in various fields of the outdoors, that'll be Mondays. Okay, that's the Monday, that's the regular Monday drop that you know and love. Recently, we had on a guy talking about his book about the Edmund Fitzgerald. Okay, for instance, that, which is called the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, that's the interview show. That's Mondays as normal. The news show, okay, the news show, which again, covers your news, so listener feedback,

• 11:40Steven Rinella?

corrections, our news, what we've been up to, making fruitcakes, whatever, and the news, national news, local news, any news that would influence your thinking, influence your actions as a hunter and angler, that's the news show. The news show drops fresh, okay, you've heard us talk about flops where I'm like, why can't we just make an episode and flop, there it comes out. As fast as Phil the engineer can get it ready to go, it will drop. So that if we say, hey, in the news yesterday, that's what we're talking about. It just drops, it comes out, whap, flop, when it's ready. The news show hits. It's just going to be, it hits when it hits. So watch for it, okay? As part of this, we're drawing in all the brain power, we're drawing in all the brain

• 12:25Steven Rinella?

power and all the story making power of the guys you know from Radio Live. But in order to do this more, this more urgent news show, which comes out when news happens every week and it comes out when it comes out, we're sunsetting in March, Radio Live, so that we're not held to it being at a specific time. Was it 11 o'clock on Thursdays?

• 12:50Speaker 07

  Yep.

• 12:51Steven Rinella?

Will no longer be beholden to being like, it's live at 11 on Thursdays. So the guys from, the guys you know in the driver's chair at Radio Live are coming over to the news show. And we're taking many aspects of that format and bringing it to the news show, which is quicker response time. So Radio Live will sunset in favor of creating a the news show, the news, okay? Stay tuned for all that.

• 13:24Steven Rinella?

All the stuff you love, corrections. Oh, go ahead.

• 13:26Speaker 06

I was just gonna say, I think a lot of people are gonna really enjoy that.

• 13:29Steven Rinella?

I think so. People will be pissed. People will like it. It's like everything.

• 13:31Speaker 06

  Yeah, just like everything.

• 13:33Steven Rinella?

We had on a guy, speaking about the, you know, you can't please.

• 13:37Speaker 06

Yeah, you can't make everyone happy.

• 13:38Steven Rinella?

We had a guy on the other day. He killed a big, huge buck downtown, but he's also running for governor of Ohio.

• 13:44Speaker 06

  Uh, Rob, right?

• 13:45Steven Rinella?

Rob Sand, right? He's like, hey, did you, um, what was the audience's response to the interview? And I said, man, I don't look. This is gonna sound terrible. I don't look at comments.

• 13:59Steven Rinella?

I told him I don't look at comments because I don't want to be captured. There's a thing called being captured by an audience.

• 14:04Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 14:05Steven Rinella?

Right? Like, you hear people bitching about stuff and then you change your ways.

• 14:09Speaker 06

Yeah, you change your perception, your opinions.

• 14:11Steven Rinella?

  Yeah.

• 14:11Speaker 06

  Your actions.

• 14:12Steven Rinella?

Wish I could pull, I'm gonna pull this up. He was talking about the hazard of listening to people complaining.

• 14:21Steven Rinella?

Let me find this. This is interesting.

• 14:27Steven Rinella?

Someone talk about something real quick. But not for too long.

• 14:31Speaker 05

What about our dog art here, boys?

• 14:34Speaker 05

Shoulder? In March, I'm gonna be right behind those three dogs right there.

• 14:39Steven Rinella?

  Okay, check this out.

• 14:41Speaker 06

I don't get why they say that.

• 14:41Steven Rinella?

You know, you get certain dudes that just complain about everything all the time? Well, one guy was saying, one guy commented on the Rob Sand episode. Rob Sand is, um, uh, he was discussing his faith as a Christian. And he's also discussing how he's running for governor of Iowa as a Democrat. And the guy in the comment section was like, a Democrat can't be a Christian. I'm like, did you read that in the Bible? So, uh, we're talking about like people that complain all the time. He sent me this.

• 15:09Steven Rinella?

In 2015, okay, there were 8,760 formal complaints submitted to the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport about noise pollution. Okay? So 2015, 8,760 formal complaints about noise pollution at Ronald Reagan Airport.

• 15:37Steven Rinella?

6,852 of them came from a single house.

• 15:42Speaker 07

  Oh, my.

• 15:43Steven Rinella?

In an affluent neighborhood in Washington DC.

• 15:47Steven Rinella?

In 2015, that house, members of that household submitted 19 formal complaints per day.

• 15:56Speaker 07

Wow. Geez. Someone has. Oh, my God.

• 15:58Steven Rinella?

  Okay.

• 15:59Speaker 06

They need to pick up a power board.

• 16:00Steven Rinella?

The US, listen to this, the US Department of Education has an office for civil rights. Okay, and they enforce civil rights laws related to education funding. In 2023, they received 5,059 sexual discrimination complaints from a single person. So they had a total of 8,151 formal sexual discrimination complaints, of which 5,059 came from one person. So one person accounted for 68.5% of all sexual discrimination complaints in that year.

• 16:44Steven Rinella?

Point being, you got to watch out.

• 16:46Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 16:48Steven Rinella?

Uh, where was I going with that? Oh, anyways, we're launching, when the new news show launches, we're going to launch a contest called Corrections of the Week. You can win Correction of the Week by catching us being wrong about something. And it could be that we're wrong, um, or it could be an error by omission.

• 17:08Steven Rinella?

Right, an error by omission. And I explained what that means in a previous episode.

• 17:14Steven Rinella?

Uh, so here's some corrections from the recent app. I'm gonna skip one because we already kind of covered it and, and the guy's wrong, and the guy's wrong. From our most recent episode, um, what was this one called?

• 17:29Steven Rinella?

We had a recent episode and it, we had a, a segment on there called skunks ruin a marriage.

• 17:36Steven Rinella?

And I was talking about a guy whose wife wants to divorce him. Or his, his marriage is getting rocky because he's taken up skunk trapping because the skunk prices are so high. His wife can't handle the constant smell of skunks around.

• 17:50Steven Rinella?

I comment that I think he just needs to tell her, baby, trapping season don't last all year long. And some smart aleck thinks he's got a correction. He looks up, I'm gonna let Seth explain why, I'm gonna correct his correction. He corrects it and says, hey, I caught you. Oklahoma's, uh, list. Skunks. As being open year round, no daily season, no possession limit, no bag limit. So ha, you're wrong, trapping season is all year. Seth?

• 18:24Speaker 07

Their hides are only prime for a certain part of the year.

• 18:26Steven Rinella?

  Nah.

• 18:27Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 18:28Steven Rinella?

Turn the correction right back on him.

• 18:29Speaker 07

Only worth money for a certain period of time.

• 18:32Steven Rinella?

  When they're prime.

• 18:32Speaker 07

  When they're prime.

• 18:33Steven Rinella?

So correction in your face, buddy.

• 18:37Speaker 06

What are you gonna call a corrected, corrected?

• 18:40Steven Rinella?

  That's one, I don't know, then I win something.

• 18:42Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 18:43Steven Rinella?

I win, we give him a prize and then take it back.

• 18:45Speaker 06

  Take it back.

• 18:49Steven Rinella?

This guy says, I was saying, he says, he was, a guy was saying, that he was like saying, now I'm no Jeremiah Johnson.

• 18:58Steven Rinella?

But I'm a pretty good trapper. And I said, Jeremiah Johnson isn't held out as a good trapper.

• 19:07Steven Rinella?

He doesn't put up big numbers.

• 19:11Steven Rinella?

And I was telling him, if you were like, hey, I'm no John Graham, I'm no Mercer Lawing.

• 19:17Steven Rinella?

I'm no Craig O'Gorman. I'm no Slim Peterson. I'm no Mike Marziata.

• 19:25Speaker 07

They're good trappers. Maybe he was saying, I'm no, I'm no famous trapper.

• 19:31Steven Rinella?

Yeah, he said, I'm no Jeremiah Johnson. But there's no reason to believe Jeremiah Johnson was ever good at trapping.

• 19:39Steven Rinella?

  He catches like.

• 19:42Steven Rinella?

He, he comes in with a beaver one day and his wife acts, his, his wife looks surprised.

• 19:50Steven Rinella?

It was around that time when he shaved his beard and was giving her like, uh, he had to shave his beard because it's make you're taking her face.

• 19:55Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 19:56Steven Rinella?

He comes in with a beaver and she looks like, oh my God, he got one.

• 20:03Steven Rinella?

  I'm not making this up.

• 20:05Speaker 05

  I know the saying.

• 20:09Steven Rinella?

There's another scene where they're out of food and he tells Caleb, his, his boy, the, the mute boy he takes under his wing. He says, take note of where I place those traps and go fetch us some real food. That's it. You don't see him. He don't have a big barn full of 300 beavers he caught.

• 20:25Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 20:25Speaker 05

  You know what?

• 20:26Steven Rinella?

There's no reason to believe he's a good trapper.

• 20:27Speaker 05

It's true. I think they would might, she might've been serving him up some softy.

• 20:30Steven Rinella?

Yep. No, she was always making a flatbread out of cornmeal. He didn't like it.

• 20:38Steven Rinella?

So then this guy comes back, Steve, you are mistaken. There is a scene depicting Jeremiah Johnson as a successful trapper.

• 20:47Steven Rinella?

If you have watched it nearly a thousand times like myself, you would know it's not narrated, but clearly depicted.

• 20:54Steven Rinella?

Good luck on future screw ups.

• 20:57Speaker 06

  Wow.

• 20:58Speaker 07

  Man, this guy's like.

• 20:59Speaker 06

You just can't win with it.

• 21:00Steven Rinella?

Dude's trying to stick it to me. There is no, I'm a Jer, I'm Jeremiah Johnson through and through, dude. It's a great movie. There is no reason to believe that Jeremiah Johnson is a good trapper.

• 21:15Speaker 06

That's just an opinion he formed.

• 21:16Speaker 07

Did he say where in the movie?

• 21:18Steven Rinella?

  No.

• 21:19Speaker 07

Oh, so he has no facts to back it up.

• 21:21Steven Rinella?

  So in your face.

• 21:23Speaker 06

  Buddy.

• 21:23Steven Rinella?

  Good luck on.

• 21:24Speaker 06

  Prize withdrawn.

• 21:25Speaker 05

  Prize revoked.

• 21:29Speaker 07

  Good luck on future corrections.

Yep. Joined today by Seth Morris.

  Chili Picane. Chili Picane.

• 21:41Speaker 07

  Chili Picane.

• 21:44Steven Rinella?

Here's a real correction. This is a real flat out good correction. This guy wins correction of the week. And this is one I deserve and it's, he's right. Comes in from, uh, Texas Parks and Wildlife.

• 21:58Steven Rinella?

  Law enforcement.

• 22:00Steven Rinella?

  From State HQ.

• 22:03Steven Rinella?

All the way from the top.

• 22:04Speaker 06

  Means business.

• 22:06Steven Rinella?

He says, I was listening to the latest podcast this morning. This is an old one. We've been sitting on this one because I wanted to do the correction from Texas. So it felt real.

• 22:16Steven Rinella?

I made a comment in a past episode saying that Texas has a law that allows you to cross property lines to retrieve game if you're unarmed.

• 22:28Speaker 05

  Okay. Common law.

• 22:30Steven Rinella?

Where I got that was, I remember we were hunting sandhill cranes up in the panhandle. And I remember I hit a crane and it sailed off, but went down across property lines. My buddy said, go ahead and get it, but leave your shotgun.

• 22:46Speaker 06

On this side of the fence.

• 22:47Steven Rinella?

On this side of the fence.

• 22:51Steven Rinella?

A warden wrote in, he says, I'm not telling you that didn't happen. And maybe your buddy had an understanding with the neighbor, but it was just like a permission we got. So maybe my buddy was wrong. So I'm not telling you your buddy didn't say that, but that's not true in Texas. You would have to secure permission from that neighbor, armed or unarmed, to cross his fence to do retrieval. That is not, you do not have that right in Texas. There's not a retrieval right in Texas.

• 23:24Speaker 05

Can you do that in South Dakota? You can, yeah. You have to just leave your shotgun or whatever on, like you're hunting ditch chickens, like hunting the ditches in South Dakota, which is legal. If you, if it gets up, flies over, shoot it over the, uh, someone's property, you can go get it, you can cross that boundary, but you have to leave your gun, like in a public spot.

• 23:45Steven Rinella?

  In what state is that?

• 23:46Speaker 05

  South Dakota.

• 23:46Steven Rinella?

  Okay.

• 23:47Speaker 06

Can you bring your dog with you too?

• 23:49Speaker 05

You know, that's a great question. I don't know if the dog is allowed.

• 23:53Speaker 06

I'd rather bring my dog over than a buddy.

• 23:56Speaker 05

Yep. Yeah. I'd be, I'd be curious to know if you could like, just send your, like send Ruby out there to go get it.

• 24:00Steven Rinella?

Well, the reason you probably can, because in most places of a dog, a dog doesn't get cited for trespassing.

• 24:05Speaker 06

And a dog isn't armed either.

• 24:07Steven Rinella?

  Yep. Well, mine is.

• 24:09Speaker 05

  Well.

• 24:12Steven Rinella?

But, uh, yeah, yeah. So just for, for folks to keep in mind, um, this is a real state by state issue. Retrieval. There's, there's places where retrieval is allowed. I can't think of one of the states, but I, I remember a guy saying,

• 24:26Speaker 06

  look it up.

• 24:27Steven Rinella?

That he lived in a state where retrieval is allowed, but he was saying out of courtesy, he would never do it. Oh, it was the guy that has that little postage stamp piece of ground?

• 24:38Steven Rinella?

What state was he in? Oklahoma? You found his property?

• 24:43Speaker 06

  Uh, no.

• 24:44Steven Rinella?

  Dr. Randall found the property.

• 24:45Speaker 06

  Yeah, on Onyx.

• 24:47Steven Rinella?

Somehow Randall found the property. What state was that guy in?

• 24:50Speaker 06

  I think it was Oklahoma.

• 24:52Steven Rinella?

Either way, it was a state where you, where retrieval is allowed. Um, so you, you shoot a deer, deer runs across fence in this state, you could go get it. So there are states where retrieval is allowed, there are states where unarmed retrieval is allowed, and there are states where retrieval is not allowed. Uh, in states where retrieval is not allowed, I would recommend, if you had that situation, you might, step one, ask for permission for retrieval. If you are denied retrieval permission, I would do a step two, and you're not calling up to complain, but a step two would be call your local game warden. Explain to your local game warden, here's what happened.

• 25:35Steven Rinella?

Maybe the game warden, if he's got time, would have better luck having a conversation with the neighbor to say, I will accompany the hunter, or will you allow me to go over and, and, and drag it back over? That might be a good step to take.

• 25:49Speaker 05

So, let me chat in here a little bit.

• 25:51Steven Rinella?

  Please.

• 25:51Speaker 05

  You remember Amish Jason?

• 25:53Steven Rinella?

  Yep.

• 25:53Speaker 05

That went rabbit hunting with us?

• 25:54Steven Rinella?

  Yep. He was Amish.

• 25:55Speaker 05

His family, well, he looks Amish. His family, uh, got into a little scuffle. Uh, the, the 16-year-old son shot a decent buck. Uh, it, it, uh, ran over to the neighbor's property that was leased to some dudes from out of state.

• 26:13Steven Rinella?

  Okay.

• 26:13Speaker 05

And it died. And before they could get it, those guy, guys, uh, they scooped it up.

• 26:24Speaker 06

  The landowner?

• 26:25Speaker 05

The la, the, the, the, the rental guys, the out-of-state hunters scooped it up. And then it's like, they kinda had the picture of the deer on the trail camera, and then, all of a sudden, they meet them at the, like, at the gas station, they've got the deer in the back of the, of the, uh, truck, and they're taking pictures and stuff of it, they see it, then they get the game warden involved, and then that's when they find out that, in Kentucky, there's no, you've gotta have a landowner permission. When that deer goes over there... And uh dies, it becomes that landowner's deer.

• 26:59Steven Rinella?

  Got it.

• 27:00Speaker 05

  In Kentucky.

• 27:01Steven Rinella?

Yep. So what wound up happening?

• 27:02Speaker 05

  Uh.

• 27:03Steven Rinella?

Did they, they never gave him his deer back?

• 27:05Speaker 05

I think eventually got his deer back because the out of state hunters.

• 27:07Steven Rinella?

Who'd even want a deer anyways? It's like. Picture the world in which you'd have it stuffed on the wall and be like, oh, sweet. Where'd you get that buck? Well, the neighbor kid got it, but I took it from him.

• 27:17Speaker 05

Yeah. The dudes pour in from out of state here in Kentucky now, and they pay absorbent prices for land and like three or $4,000 a weekend to hunt, to shoot a 125 whitetail. And, and they do not want to go home without something. The, all the money that they've invested feeding deer. I worked on a project over in Critney County, and I was amazed that come in August, September, all the trucks from out of state that would come in with just a damn pickup load of deer feed and deer feeders on there to start feeding the deer and doing that. So it's a huge industry in Kentucky that everybody is like, it's under the radar. Nobody wants to talk about it.

• 27:58Steven Rinella?

Nothing worse than a dude hunting out of his own state.

• 28:02Speaker 06

  You can't say that.

• 28:04Steven Rinella?

  Should be illegal.

• 28:07Speaker 06

  You can't say that.

• 28:08Steven Rinella?

  Tony, that's straight from Texas.

• 30:43Steven Rinella?

Oh, a guy had this a little bit. Just to circle back on this skunk situation. Then we're gonna put the skunk situation to bed. This is, I think this is a wife's tale. It's like water witching. Kevin and I had a long argument. Kevin believes in water witching. I do. I do not. My friend David Johnson, he is the supreme water witcher.

• 31:05Speaker 07

  Don't, don't take, don't take the bait.

• 31:07Steven Rinella?

He's gonna be on, uh, Clay Newton's podcast.

• 31:09Speaker 05

You're taking the bait. I was trying to rage bait you.

• 31:13Speaker 07

He hinted out to me the other day.

• 31:16Speaker 05

Facts, yeah, facts. You watched a guy water witch.

• 31:19Steven Rinella?

He's, he's written several, me and him, we went out there and there's zones of concentration.

• 31:24Speaker 07

  Got him.

• 31:25Steven Rinella?

Zones of concentration, and that's where all the first American hunters, the first Americans, they would build their campsites, a lot of times on zones of concentrated water.

• 31:36Speaker 05

  Sure.

• 31:38Steven Rinella?

  Underground, not flowing.

• 31:40Speaker 05

What's that have to do with water witching?

• 31:41Steven Rinella?

He can, once he finds, goes down in that, like, the, the mega complex that we're working on, he went in and, uh, water witched it, and that's where we're concentrating our digs, and that's where we found the bottom tusk of a mastodon in the shape of a penis.

• 31:58Speaker 05

  Can't argue that.

• 32:01Steven Rinella?

  Playing that front card, baby.

• 32:02Speaker 05

Dude, I tell you, I believe everything everybody tells me, so now I'm, till someone tells me it's fake, I'm gonna tell them it's real. Craig, you know, uh, Craig, what am I saying, Craig? Clay.

• 32:14Speaker 05

Clay don't like any kind of thing that has to do with sorcery.

• 32:18Speaker 05

  You know?

• 32:18Speaker 07

  Mm-hmm.

• 32:19Speaker 05

So he don't like it when you call it witching. I was telling you this, he calls a dowsen. Because he thinks witching makes it seem like a black art, a dark art. Anyhow, skunks. Guy writes in to say this, this is a correction, it's a hot tip. He says, "My dad trapped skunks during World War II for the government." He'd sell them to the government, he says, uh, uh, to make parka hoods.

• 32:43Speaker 05

Nah. That could be true. They had a skin and shed off the barn, and it'd have a fire burning in a barrel. It would throw a wet slice of, this is, I'm gonna read this verbatim. Cause he's, he's got some clever punctuation in here, which is proper. He says, "And would throw a wet slice of, I'm pretty sure, alfalfa hay on the fire to make it smoky."

• 33:12Speaker 05

Continuing the quote, "That would kill the skunk smell in the skin and shed off the equipment as well as the skins." I don't think so.

• 33:24Speaker 05

  I think it would.

• 33:28Speaker 06

Mass the scent a little bit?

• 33:29Steven Rinella?

It would, it would complexify the odor.

• 33:32Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 33:32Steven Rinella?

I would, I think it would complexify the odor. I don't know that it would neutralize the odor.

• 33:36Speaker 07

Well, you're just mixing different smells together.

• 33:38Steven Rinella?

Yeah, you're mixing smells. That's all you're really doing. There's some good, when I was a kid, the lore was tomato juice.

• 33:46Steven Rinella?

Now the hot money, and I think it's legit, the hot money is like, uh, hydrogen peroxide.

• 33:51Speaker 07

  Dawn dish detergent.

• 33:52Steven Rinella?

  Dawn dish detergent.

• 33:53Speaker 07

  And baking soda.

• 33:54Steven Rinella?

Baking soda. And you make a frothy shampoo and skunk trappers when they get one that'll spray, you'll legit, they'll make up that little concoction. I've tried it. And I thought it was like, it didn't eradicate the smell, but they'll make up that concoction and no joke, give that skunk a little bath.

• 34:13Speaker 06

  Hmm, hmm.

• 34:14Steven Rinella?

And it's frothy. You scrub them down in it.

• 34:17Speaker 06

  Interesting.

• 34:20Steven Rinella?

  So.

• 34:23Speaker 07

Well, maybe you should try that. Save his marriage. I got sprayed by a skunk one time and just left my clothes outside for months.

• 34:33Speaker 07

  Till they smelled all right.

• 34:35Speaker 07

  Yeah, eventually just went away.

• 34:37Steven Rinella?

I had a guy tell me a story. You might've been there when he told us the story. He threw some clothes out in the yard because it got sprayed by a skunk. And waited so long that the upward facing part of the clothes had begun to bleach.

• 34:53Steven Rinella?

So that he said, when he lifted it up, you could tell the parts of the crumpled up, crumpled up clothes. You could tell the parts that had got sun bleached and the parts that hadn't because it got like a tie dye appearance to it. And he said, he smelled that son of a bitch and it still smelled like skunk.

• 35:07Speaker 07

  Oh, really?

• 35:08Steven Rinella?

It's what he said. It's what he said. Hmm. I've got a good skunk story. Please.

• 35:13Speaker 06

Sure you do with all your dogs.

• 35:15Steven Rinella?

It's probably like, hmm, 1980, 79, maybe 81, fur prices were pretty high. And everybody was trapping and had some kind of mongrel dog and stuff. And, uh, I had a dog named RT and we'd go out at night and, man, you could get $6 for a big possum then. So we had got out one night and roamed around and he loved to catch a skunk. He'd got into the skunk and I come back home and it was probably like 11:30, 12 o'clock at night. I'm creeping in the door, I open up the door, still living with my mom and dad and we got a pretty good sized house. They're on the like very back end and like I know more than get like 10 feet in the house there.

• 35:58Steven Rinella?

And my dad's screaming at me to tell me to take my clothes off that he can smell that skunk on me. Mm hmm. I go back outside, strip my clothes off and go in and take a shower, but I mean, it was that quick. Just as soon as I hit the door. Yeah. They got in the back of the house, they could smell that. It is, it is just, I have immense respect for that solution, that liquid.

• 36:24Steven Rinella?

In a skunk. That, I mean, you, I don't think that a human could make, I don't think in a lab you could make as pugnacious or resilient of an odor in a laboratory.

• 36:39Speaker 07

That stuff too, like when you smell a skunk at a hundred yards, it smells like skunk, but when you really get in there, it turns into something different.

• 36:48Steven Rinella?

My dream is to get real mad at someone and.

• 36:52Speaker 06

  Skunk them?

• 36:53Steven Rinella?

Well, I just want to take a hypodermic needle of skunk. And just give a, a little and put that injected into their car seat.

• 37:03Speaker 06

  Oh gosh.

• 37:04Steven Rinella?

Cause you know, can you imagine? They would look and look and look.

• 37:09Speaker 06

  And couldn't find it.

• 37:11Steven Rinella?

  Right?

• 37:11Speaker 07

  Oh yeah.

• 37:12Steven Rinella?

They would never stop looking and they'd never find it.

• 37:16Speaker 06

  What's that liquid even called?

• 37:18Steven Rinella?

  Skunk scent.

• 37:21Speaker 06

  Well, like you know, like.

• 37:21Steven Rinella?

They call it, if you went to buy it, if you went to buy it, you'd be buying some skunk essence.

• 37:26Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 37:27Steven Rinella?

Right now, I'm making a thing called.

• 37:29Speaker 06

  I'm not in the market.

• 37:30Steven Rinella?

Well, I am. We've had it.

• 37:32Speaker 06

  For trapping.

• 37:33Steven Rinella?

Well, we've get, we sold it in the auction house of oddities. What did it go for?

• 37:37Speaker 07

  I don't remember.

• 37:39Steven Rinella?

I'm making a thing right now called the Nelson formula. It's a, it's a coyote bait formula I'm making. And the first step is you grind bobcat meat. And you put it out to taint. You put a taint on it. Chili thought it, Chili literally put his taint on it. Not realizing that what I meant was you put it.

• 38:05Speaker 07

He thought it was, he thought it was taint.

• 38:06Steven Rinella?

When I said, we're gonna put a taint on it. I'm just out there, spread eagle.

• 38:12Speaker 07

Turned around and there was Chili.

• 38:15Steven Rinella?

I said, no, no Chili. We're gonna rot it ever so slightly. We're not gonna put it, we're gonna let it taint. We're not gonna put a taint.

• 38:23Speaker 07

Good initiative, bad judgment right there.

• 38:26Steven Rinella?

But that's the guy, he's quick, you know, he tell me to do something, he does it. I'm putting a taint on it, right?

• 38:34Steven Rinella?

This is part of a broader project. This is part of a book pro, this is part of a book, book project I'm beginning about

• 38:43Steven Rinella?

the, the, the, the history of and characters involved in

• 38:50Steven Rinella?

Amer, the American fur trade through time, right? Since the beginning of time. When they established Manhattan, it was a beaver. They established Manhattan, it was like a beaver trading outpost, right? So as part of this thing, it's like a fun little bit, I'm making this very famous bait formula called the Nelson formula. Step one is you take some bobcat meat, chunk it up or grind it down and then rot it in your garage for a long time. You take a glass jar, fill it, glass gallon jar, fill it two thirds full. And start rotting it down. The other day I was making my daughter and her friends smell it and they want me to make, oh, Yanni's daughter. Mabel and Rosie, they wanted me to make smash burgers for dinner and I told them I was gonna make cat smash burgers out of that.

• 39:33Speaker 06

  Yeah, smash burger.

• 39:36Steven Rinella?

I was making them smell it. My daughter, dude, she wouldn't go near that jar and Yanni's daughter stuck her nose right in there.

• 39:43Speaker 06

What else is in the bait?

• 39:45Steven Rinella?

Well, so then, once you get, you make a solution. So you make, you grind up the cat meat and let it taint. Then you make a solution in another jar. And the solution is comprised of pure rainwater. Fine.

• 40:03Steven Rinella?

  Red fox piss.

• 40:06Steven Rinella?

  Valerian root.

• 40:09Steven Rinella?

Some other root called like a fetus.

• 40:15Steven Rinella?

Some people say it gives you the shits and some people say it cures the shits.

• 40:20Steven Rinella?

  A fetus.

• 40:21Speaker 06

I wouldn't want to try it out.

• 40:22Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 40:24Speaker 07

Want to clarify that before you.

• 40:26Steven Rinella?

A fetus, I ordered something, it was hard to find.

• 40:29Speaker 06

  I'm sure.

• 40:30Steven Rinella?

  A tincture. So it's been a word I don't like, tincture.

• 40:35Steven Rinella?

A tincture of this root that goes in there. And in the Nelson formula, it was real smudge and I couldn't tell if it meant 12 ounces or a half ounce. And Mercer Long told me definitely a half ounce. You don't put 12 ounces of that stuff in there. Fox, so I said Fox, but skunk essence, beaver caster, valerian root, this other root. What else is in it? That's it. And I took a bunch of beaver casters and cured them in moonshine. Seth's seen that. I took a sip of it, it took me eight hours to get that taste out of my mouth.

• 41:10Speaker 06

  I can imagine.

• 41:13Speaker 07

But you haven't had that moonshine.

• 41:15Steven Rinella?

  Dude, you.

• 41:17Speaker 06

  I bet he has.

• 41:18Steven Rinella?

Yeah. If someone had it in them to drink.

• 41:21Speaker 05

Put the hydrometer on it to test it to see where it goes. They were ranked.

• 41:24Steven Rinella?

Yeah, if someone had it in them to drink enough of that moonshine to get drunk off that beaver caster moonshine, I would have a lot of respect for that individual.

• 41:31Speaker 06

Yeah, you might even grow a tail.

• 41:33Steven Rinella?

Yep. So that's the Nelson, why am I even talking about this? The Nelson formula?

• 41:40Steven Rinella?

  The hell's I talking about?

• 41:41Speaker 07

  Talking about.

• 41:41Speaker 06

  ingredient.

• 41:42Steven Rinella?

  Oh, skunk.

• 41:44Steven Rinella?

The one part I don't have is the skunk essence. I gotta go secure me some skunk essence.

• 41:49Speaker 07

We've had years where we couldn't get away from skunk.

• 41:52Steven Rinella?

  I know. Thicker, thin.

• 41:54Speaker 07

  Not this year.

• 41:54Steven Rinella?

  Rich and poor.

• 41:55Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 41:58Steven Rinella?

Speaking of Bobcats, I got two other observations about Bobcats. Doug Dern.

• 42:03Steven Rinella?

Introduced me to my favorite saying.

• 42:07Steven Rinella?

He was talking about two guys being real good friends. And Doug said they're like nuts on a dog.

• 42:12Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 42:16Steven Rinella?

A true friendship would be like nuts on a cat.

• 42:21Steven Rinella?

That is a tight true friendship.

• 42:24Speaker 07

  That's real tight.

• 42:25Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 42:26Steven Rinella?

That's tru- that's a truer friendship than nuts on a dog.

• 42:31Speaker 07

  Yeah, they're just always.

• 42:32Steven Rinella?

  Yeah.

• 42:33Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 42:33Steven Rinella?

That's two guys that are very close with one another.

• 42:37Speaker 07

They're not like the bulls that's out here.

• 42:39Steven Rinella?

No. Like nuts on a bull? I mean, they're friendly.

• 42:45Speaker 07

Sometimes they separate a little bit, but they always, they always come back together.

• 42:50Speaker 06

  I was buying each other.

• 42:53Speaker 06

  Nuts on a cat.

• 42:54Steven Rinella?

Yeah, like nuts on a bighorn sheep. Like, oh, so they, they're like, they're in touch, they're in contact. They text now and then.

• 43:02Speaker 07

  They have each other's email.

• 43:03Steven Rinella?

But like nuts on a cat is you're like.

• 43:08Steven Rinella?

Last thing on Bobcats. How much have we talked about this whole Bobcat situation?

• 43:13Speaker 07

  Down here?

• 43:14Speaker 06

  Podcast?

• 43:15Steven Rinella?

No, no, no, not so much what we're doing down here, but just like, I feel like I've been like living, I've been like very, I gotta move away from it. I've been too obsessed with Bobcats lately. It's starting to interfere with my marriage, my professional.

• 43:29Speaker 07

  It's kind of all we.

• 43:30Steven Rinella?

  I know, but I got.

• 43:31Speaker 07

Everything we text about, texted about in the last

• 43:36Speaker 07

  three months has been Bobcats.

• 43:37Steven Rinella?

  After

• 43:40Steven Rinella?

  the auction.

• 43:42Steven Rinella?

After the fur auction, I'm setting all, I'm, I can't go on. Like, I can't.

• 43:48Speaker 07

  Till next year.

• 43:49Steven Rinella?

Yeah, it's just like it's interfering with my personal life. It's interfering with my family. It's interfering with my job.

• 43:55Speaker 07

So I should stop sending you trail cam pictures?

• 43:57Steven Rinella?

I don't want nothing to do with Bobcats after the auction.

• 44:00Speaker 07

  Okay.

• 44:01Steven Rinella?

Um, it's just been very interesting to me as we talked about that like Bobcat. I've always been, I, I, I'm always interested in the fur markets and as we covered, skunk prices are high right now. And Bobcat prices are very high right now. Um.

• 44:19Speaker 05

I've got a very interesting book for you. I was gonna bring it on this trip, but I forgot it. And the title of it is The Bobcat of North America.

• 44:27Steven Rinella?

  Yeah, I'd be more, I, I'll, I'll take a look see.

• 44:30Speaker 05

You, you'll, you'll glean a lot of information.

• 44:32Steven Rinella?

  Well, I might not.

• 44:34Speaker 05

  You will.

• 44:34Steven Rinella?

  I might not.

• 44:36Speaker 05

  Yeah, it goes.

• 44:37Steven Rinella?

Do you wanna know why I might not?

• 44:40Speaker 07

  I do.

• 44:43Speaker 06

We're good. I was just checking.

• 44:46Steven Rinella?

It's because, uh, listen, man, I'm not hacking on it. I'm saying because it's from 1960. So that's great. But it's like, it's gonna lack a lot of the stuff, modern collaring data. A lot of like so much of what we know about how stuff moves. Is new.

• 45:08Speaker 05

Okay. I'll give you that, that part of it.

• 45:11Steven Rinella?

  Yeah.

• 45:12Speaker 05

But it's based on history and what they knew about bobcats when guys just lived in the woods.

• 45:20Steven Rinella?

  Yeah.

• 45:21Speaker 05

Not abolished. A guy that maybe made his living from the bounty on bobcats.

• 45:26Steven Rinella?

  Yeah. No, I understand.

• 45:27Speaker 05

So when money gets involved, people find out how shit works.

• 45:34Speaker 05

You put the money symbol in there.

• 45:36Steven Rinella?

  That is true.

• 45:37Speaker 05

They figure out, how can we catch every damn one of them out there?

• 45:41Speaker 07

That's your bumper sticker on your car.

• 45:43Steven Rinella?

Mm hmm. He's got a pro, he's got a coal keeps the lights on bumper sticker on his car.

• 45:48Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 45:48Steven Rinella?

He's gonna switch that out with, well, that's true of coal.

• 45:51Speaker 05

  And unless.

• 45:52Speaker 07

  That's true.

• 45:55Speaker 05

Let's timber there first and we'll do the other planets later.

• 45:58Steven Rinella?

  Mm hmm.

• 45:59Speaker 05

  You know.

• 45:59Steven Rinella?

Well, that's your, I don't, yeah, I don't, yeah. I, I agree with what you're saying about the money thing, but I, I, I don't. I, um, we need to be, this is a whole other subject. We need to be all done cutting old growth.

• 46:12Steven Rinella?

  I'll, I'll, I'll, listen, I don't want to debate it with you.

• 46:15Speaker 05

  Yeah, I would say.

• 46:15Steven Rinella?

I got too much respect for you to sit here and debate with you about it.

• 46:18Speaker 05

Part of it there. I used to be like the guy, I hated loggers, timber cutters and all that.

• 46:23Steven Rinella?

  I'm not saying that.

• 46:24Speaker 05

And then we've got to manage our forest.

• 46:26Steven Rinella?

  Yes.

• 46:26Speaker 05

There's a place for old growth and there's a place to manage our forest. So we, we, we able to build nurseries for all types of animals.

• 46:37Steven Rinella?

  Listen, man, here's the deal.

• 46:42Steven Rinella?

I'm not even gonna tell you I disagree.

• 46:45Steven Rinella?

That's fine. I'm gonna let you say that. I don't agree.

• 46:49Speaker 05

You know, some people come into Kentucky and they'll go into a forest and they call it old growth. And it's like a hundred years old. Like LBL.

• 47:00Steven Rinella?

  Yeah, I don't, I don't.

• 47:01Speaker 05

This is old growth. It's not old growth. When they came in to make iron and steel up there, they used the forest for fuel. They made charcoal out of that.

• 47:14Steven Rinella?

  The bull.

• 47:14Speaker 05

And they cut everything down. So the oldest tree up there is probably less than a hundred years old.

• 47:20Steven Rinella?

  That's not old growth.

• 47:21Speaker 05

That's not old growth, but they classified as old growth. And then they petition. The keyboard warriors. The one dude in there that is cranking out 14 emails a day saying, save our old growth forests in LBL. Or whatever forests is in Kentucky. This been already been harvested. It's not original old growth forests. Yes, anything original old growth, I'm 100%. Let's keep that baby.

• 47:47Steven Rinella?

Yeah. I 100% for, for, for habitat. To make up for the fact that we're not using fire like we used to use. I'm all for managed forests. There's a lot of areas. Northern Michigan. Well, much of Michigan, Michigan's upper peninsula. Like I could sit here and list places all day long. That had, that had much better wildlife habitat for native wildlife. When they were actively logging. Because you need different structures and age growth and all that. I'm 100%. I am not a hands off guy. Most forests are disturbed. They require active management. You're not going to put the genie back in the bottle. Mankind has already gotten in there and whacked things up and mankind can do things to fix things.

• 48:33Steven Rinella?

However. And not to disrespect anyone on the economic end of it, not to disrespect the logger who's making a living. I don't think that when it, when it comes to four year, five year or five, 400, 500, 600 year old trees at this point. They're more valuable standing there.

• 48:54Speaker 05

I agree with you. I'm, I'm 100% with you on that part.

• 48:58Steven Rinella?

  Back to Bobcats.

• 49:01Speaker 05

  Back to bobcats?

• 49:01Steven Rinella?

  Yeah.

• 49:02Speaker 05

  Bobcats of North America.

• 49:03Steven Rinella?

You got a world to say about bobcats.

• 49:05Speaker 05

I'm a, I'm a, I'm a bobcat guy. Man, when I was, I got a great, some great stories to tell you. When I was a kid, that was on my hit list. And in Kentucky, they didn't become legal till, when the Siamese thing come along, they didn't become legal till like ninety, ninety-one, ninety-two-ish. They got off the list. You couldn't hunt them. You could hunt them at one time. And then when the Siamese came along and all that, they took them off. And they were restricted, but I remember as a kid, uh, going to Doc Mosley. And Doc Mosley was part of the Manhattan Project. He went into hot Japan right after.

• 49:42Steven Rinella?

  Okay.

• 49:42Speaker 05

They dropped him. But I remember going to Doc Mosley's office, getting a shot and ass with some pill and selling for five dollars. And I looked up there and he had two like kitten bobcats. I mean, just little bitty, I mean, most bobcats you'd see would be like small. But I was always intrigued with them. And then I remember one day that me and Rookie Wicker, we had camped out all night and we got up early in the morning.

• 50:02Steven Rinella?

Was that, was that a grill or a guy?

• 50:04Speaker 05

It's a guy. We, uh, he, he had a sister named Julie and Jenny and, um, one more, I can't remember. I can tell you another story, but.

• 50:14Speaker 06

  Give it to bobcats.

• 50:15Steven Rinella?

  Bobcats.

• 50:16Speaker 06

  Bobcats.

• 50:19Speaker 05

G W Tarrell said, I'll put it in layman's terms, G W Tarrell said that Scott Wicker should have a medal for raising good looking women.

• 50:27Speaker 05

So you can just read into that.

• 50:31Steven Rinella?

  A Nobel Prize.

• 50:33Speaker 05

So, give it over. So me and Rookie, we, we've camped out all night. And we're on the edge of Lake Barkley and we go up Poplar Creek. And we take our twenty-two's. He's got a Winchester sixty-one blown to his dad's, got his initials engraved in it, SW. Somebody with some really skill with an engraver did it. Not you.

• 50:54Steven Rinella?

  Yeah.

• 50:55Speaker 05

And then I've got the Bronco twenty-two survival rifle. It's like all metal skeleton frame. And it flips up. So we go out and we're shooting twenty-two's. We're killing this and killing that. There is this blackbird, probably like, I don't know, forty yards away, did a good, a good piece. Said, I bet you can't shoot that right there. And I go up, I take the Bronco up. And I squeeze off a shot. He said, oh, you didn't get it in about that time. The blackbird falls out of the tree.

• 51:24Steven Rinella?

  Yeah.

• 51:25Speaker 05

We take ten steps and here comes a bobcat trotting across the road in front of us twenty yards, turns and looks at us. We got no twenty-two shells.

• 51:35Steven Rinella?

  Oh.

• 51:37Speaker 05

So you'll never catch me with less than a hundred pack.

• 51:41Steven Rinella?

Did you throw a gun at it?

• 51:42Speaker 05

True story. One hundred percent true. So then I went from there and I started running with this guy named Jimmy McCoy and he was obsessed with bobcat hunting. Traveled the whole United States from Maine, Wisconsin, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, Oregon, you name it, bobcat hunting. Finding out what he needed to know about bobcat. Told me it took him ten years before he could, he could catch a bobcat on his own.

• 52:14Steven Rinella?

  With hound dogs?

• 52:14Speaker 05

With hound dogs. In Kentucky, because we get limited amounts of snow. At that time, some of his hunting was like under the radar. So like I said, he's the one that petitioned to get the bobcat legal. Trapper came in, a biologist, and he, and he told him everything that he knew about it. So in the late eighty-nine or so, I started hunting with him and learning how they do running dogs. We might go a whole season and not even catch one with dogs.

• 52:47Steven Rinella?

  Yep.

• 52:47Speaker 05

And killing. And then I got a dog from him. I had another squirrel dog, the original Butchy. And within probably three years, I was able to catch one on my own with the knowledge that I got from him.

• 53:03Steven Rinella?

Is that the one you caught sneaking out ahead of the dogs?

• 53:05Speaker 05

Uh, no, that was with him. I had his dog pack. The one with, that I got my kid Seth and I showed you a picture of, hanging from a slippery elm tree.

• 53:15Steven Rinella?

  Yep.

• 53:16Speaker 05

That's the one, that was my first one. Let's see. That's the first one I truly, I'd ambush them with some dogs, like road hunt down the road and they would push like a young kitten up a tree and just go in there and shoot it. But I intentionally turned loose on that, that big boy, twenty-four pounds, and caught him with the dogs.

• 53:34Steven Rinella?

Got it, got it. Uh, right now.

• 53:39Steven Rinella?

Cats are real hot. This is kind of part of this whole deal I'm wanting to talk about with cats. Cat prices are very high.

• 53:48Steven Rinella?

So it's just got me interested in like this whole range of cats. So we're down here in South Texas and we just got some cats down here in South Texas. Predator calling for cats. And we caught some cats up in Montana and these are very, very different extremes. Cats up in Montana are much bigger, thicker fur. Cats down in Texas are slender, lighter, thinner fur. But what makes a cat valuable or not is whether or not it has a white belly with clean black spots.

• 54:21Steven Rinella?

Cats in South Texas and cats in Montana have white bellies and black spots. So they're of value. Just for a point of reference, when I was actually, when I actually sold fur and would trap and sell fur in Michigan growing up.

• 54:38Steven Rinella?

At a point in time when a red fox is worth 40 bucks, a bobcat was worth $15 because those bobcats out there aren't valuable because they don't have white bellies and black spots. They don't, they're not a spot. They're not nicely spotted. But right now, um, cat prices are crazy.

• 54:56Steven Rinella?

Cats are consistently averaging more than 500 bucks in the West right now. And there's some collections of cats.

• 55:04Steven Rinella?

Selling at 800 bucks a piece. Okay. Other poorer areas of cats, cats are running one to $200. So Seth and I are making a video called, it's going to be called Steve and Seth Get Rich.

• 55:18Steven Rinella?

And, uh, we're taking some Montana cats and some Texas cats and we're going to a famous bobcat auction. One of the top bobcat auctions in the country.

• 55:29Steven Rinella?

I'm not saying where we're going, but we're going to one of the top bobcat auctions in the country. Seth can't go because his wife's having a baby. He's being a baby about it.

• 55:36Speaker 06

  You and I are going.

• 55:37Steven Rinella?

Me and Max are going. Yeah.

• 55:39Speaker 07

  Thanks for stepping in.

• 55:40Speaker 06

  No worries, I got you.

• 55:41Steven Rinella?

Me and Max are going to the auction.

• 55:44Steven Rinella?

And we're gonna auction off Texas cats and Montana cats. We're gonna do a video, we're explaining the cat market. And in it, we're gonna interview one of the top bobcat buyers. We're gonna go to one of the top cat auctions in the country. And interview one of the top cat buyers in the country. And interview one of the top cat trappers in the country. And it's gonna be called Steve and Seth Get Rich. And we're taking all of our wealth from this sale. And we're putting it into Seth's unborn baby Virgil's.

• 56:14Speaker 06

  Bank account.

• 56:15Steven Rinella?

  Bank account.

• 56:15Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 56:16Steven Rinella?

College account. I don't want him blowing it on cigarettes.

• 56:20Steven Rinella?

You're gonna earmark it for his education or comparable. It doesn't need to be college, but or comparable, comparable.

• 56:26Speaker 07

Educate, further education, or if he wants to start a business or whatever after, after.

• 56:33Steven Rinella?

  Yeah.

• 56:33Speaker 07

  High school.

• 56:34Steven Rinella?

He wants to learn how to weld pipe, he can use it for that, whatever.

• 56:37Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 56:37Steven Rinella?

  Yeah. Um.

• 56:38Speaker 06

It's very nice of you, Steve, to contribute.

• 56:40Steven Rinella?

That's what we're putting all of our wealth.

• 56:41Speaker 07

  Very nice.

• 56:42Steven Rinella?

Yeah. My own children, very unhappy about this development. They overheard me talking about it.

• 56:51Steven Rinella?

Uh, but that's, that's what we're, so anyways, we got some cats down here in Texas. We've been predator calling cats. I to date have called in

• 57:01Steven Rinella?

in my lifetime, have predator called in during daylight hours at this point now, a total of eight that I know about.

• 57:10Speaker 07

  Mm hmm.

• 57:12Steven Rinella?

  Called it.

• 57:12Speaker 07

  Down here?

• 57:14Steven Rinella?

  All in Texas.

• 57:15Speaker 07

  All in Texas, yeah.

• 57:15Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 57:16Steven Rinella?

I never called in a cat in the north.

• 57:18Speaker 06

Yeah, cuz you can't call for them in Montana.

• 57:20Steven Rinella?

You can't use an electronic collar.

• 57:22Speaker 06

That, yeah, you can't use an.

• 57:23Steven Rinella?

  Yeah, the mouth blown call.

• 57:24Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 57:25Speaker 07

We, we one time called a cat in by accident in Pennsylvania calling coyotes.

• 57:29Steven Rinella?

  Oh, you did?

• 57:30Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 57:30Steven Rinella?

I've called them in turkey hunting.

• 57:32Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 57:32Steven Rinella?

  But.

• 57:32Speaker 07

  I've called them in turkey.

• 57:33Steven Rinella?

But I'm not counting those. I'm talking like intent to call.

• 57:36Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 57:36Steven Rinella?

  Like intent to call.

• 57:38Speaker 06

  Well, just this trip, four.

• 57:40Steven Rinella?

Four, and the four last time I tried it.

• 57:42Speaker 07

  Mm hmm.

• 57:43Speaker 06

What about the one that you ended up shooting last time?

• 57:46Steven Rinella?

That was one of the four I called.

• 57:47Speaker 06

That was one of the four?

• 57:48Steven Rinella?

Yeah. I've laid eyes on, while trying to call bobcats in daylight hours, I've called in eight.

• 57:57Speaker 06

Do you find there's a sweet spot in the day?

• 58:00Speaker 05

I've, I can't make that call on it.

• 58:02Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 58:03Speaker 05

I'll tell you what I haven't done after.

• 58:07Speaker 05

What I haven't done yet is called one in at daybreak.

• 58:10Speaker 06

  No.

• 58:11Speaker 05

Well, part of a pet theory of mine. Go ahead.

• 58:14Speaker 07

I was gonna say on, on day one.

• 58:18Speaker 07

The two cats that you killed. Was the last stand in the morning and the first stand in the afternoon.

• 58:24Speaker 06

Yeah, it was like banker's hours, ten to three.

• 58:26Speaker 07

And then the cat that I killed the next day was. The.

• 58:30Speaker 06

  Mid morning.

• 58:31Speaker 07

It was the, the later stand in the day.

• 58:34Speaker 05

Yeah, and Mercer Lawing, who's called in a great many cats, Mercer Lawing was saying to me, it's amazing how many you call in at noon. You know what winds up being, it's almost like, it's like, when you review in your head.

• 58:47Speaker 05

  The turkeys that you get.

• 58:49Speaker 07

  Oh, yeah.

• 58:49Speaker 05

Not the turkeys you try to get, but the turkeys that just come in hard. Bankers hours.

• 58:55Speaker 07

  Yep.

• 58:56Speaker 06

But guess what? You're still going right at the ass crack of dawn.

• 58:59Speaker 05

You're still up there at dawn.

• 58:59Speaker 07

  You have to.

• 59:01Speaker 05

Yep, you're still up there at dawn. Yeah, I think there's something about that. I don't know. Uh, like, this is like a pet theory of mine. I don't really know. A, a bobcat comes in with a very different attitude than a coyote.

• 59:14Speaker 05

Uh. At daybreak. You call in a lot of coyotes.

• 59:19Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 59:19Speaker 05

I don't know, and, and a cat comes in pretty paranoid. Maybe there's something like they don't wanna.

• 59:27Speaker 06

Wrestle around with a coyote or something, you know?

• 59:30Speaker 05

  I don't know. I don't know. Maybe they don't like, um.

• 59:36Speaker 05

Maybe, maybe there's something to do with cows. There's a thing too with rattling deer, like when you rattle bucks down here. You rattle more bucks down here midday.

• 59:46Speaker 05

Than, um, early morning. I feel. Do you not feel that way?

• 59:53Speaker 07

Um, the mornings are more productive for rattling, I think here.

• 59:58Speaker 05

  Daybreak.

• 59:59Speaker 07

That like they break up until you quit midday.

• 1:00:02Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:00:03Speaker 07

And the evenings, evenings are not as productive.

• 1:00:06Speaker 05

  Mm hmm.

• 1:00:08Speaker 05

What I was gonna say there is I always felt that Bucks are bored late morning.

• 1:00:13Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:00:14Speaker 05

Not bored. They're not chased. Their does are bedded down. And he's more like, yeah, I'll walk over and take a look. It's like if creeping in on a bull, like creeping in on a bull where like a bull with a bunch of bedded cows. You creep in on them and like late morning, midday. I feel he's more, he's gonna, he's like more likely to come have a look.

• 1:00:33Speaker 07

  Mm hmm.

Then he is when his cows are on the move and he's like, I'm like, I gotta pay attention over here. I can't get up. Can't lose them. But like late morning, he might be like, I'll go take a look.

• 1:00:41Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:00:42Speaker 05

Everybody's kind of chill, holding still. I might go have a look see.

• 1:00:46Speaker 05

  Uh.

• 1:00:48Speaker 05

  A study just came out.

• 1:00:51Speaker 05

You're gonna pay attention to this Kevin.

• 1:00:56Speaker 05

That puts cats to bed, right? Stay tuned for our video.

• 1:00:59Speaker 07

• 1:03:26Steven Rinella?

But here's a study that just came out. They ranked monogamy of dozens of mammals, including humans.

• 1:03:41Steven Rinella?

Humans are less monogamous than some mice, but are more monogamous than some breeds of sheep. This is out of Cambridge University. All it looks at is, it looks at full versus half siblings in a rage of mammals. You following me? Full versus half siblings. Species and societies with higher levels of monogamy are likely to produce more siblings that share both parents, while those with more polygamous or promiscuous mating partners are likely to see more half siblings.

• 1:04:26Speaker 05

Is that based on collared specimens?

• 1:04:33Steven Rinella?

  No.

• 1:04:34Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:04:35Steven Rinella?

Genetics, right? When it comes to our level of monogamy, human monogamy, when it comes to our level of monogamy, we're in there with meerkats and beavers.

• 1:04:46Speaker 05

  Oh, great.

• 1:04:50Steven Rinella?

We're in there with meerkats and beavers. And they're even going back in time. They're able to go back to Bronze Age burial grounds in Europe, Neolithic sites in Anatolia, ethnographic data from 94 human societies around the world, from Tanzanian hunter-gatherers to rice farming cultures in Indonesia. Okay? A wide swath of human cultures. You want to know what the most monogamous critter is out there? The most monogamous mammal? Take a guess.

• 1:05:31Speaker 05

  I got.

• 1:05:36Speaker 06

  A swan.

• 1:05:36Steven Rinella?

  Nope.

• 1:05:37Speaker 06

  Ah, I was gonna say.

• 1:05:38Speaker 07

Sandhill, yeah, I was gonna say sandhill.

• 1:05:40Steven Rinella?

  No, no, no, they're not.

• 1:05:41Speaker 06

  Is it a bird?

• 1:05:41Steven Rinella?

They're nothing. The California deer mouse.

• 1:05:46Steven Rinella?

They are strict, strict, strict monogamy.

• 1:05:53Steven Rinella?

  African wild dogs. Very monogamous.

• 1:05:59Steven Rinella?

Mole rats, very monogamous. Ethiopian wolves. Very monogamous. Eurasian beavers.

• 1:06:11Steven Rinella?

So, so the California deer mouse has a one hundred, okay, top rating, one hundred. Highest, one hundred.

• 1:06:20Steven Rinella?

Ethiopian wolves committed a seventy six point five.

• 1:06:27Steven Rinella?

The Eurasian beaver seventy two nine, humans sixty six.

• 1:06:36Steven Rinella?

And then a meerkat and a gibbon, we're kinda like them. Gray wolves.

• 1:06:42Steven Rinella?

Less monog- significantly less monog- monogamous is than us.

• 1:06:47Speaker 06

  I wonder if they.

• 1:06:48Steven Rinella?

  A macaque?

• 1:06:50Speaker 06

  Keep going.

• 1:06:52Steven Rinella?

  Very low monogamy. Eighteen.

• 1:06:58Speaker 07

  What's the lowest?

• 1:06:59Steven Rinella?

  I don't know.

• 1:07:01Steven Rinella?

  Feral cats.

• 1:07:01Speaker 06

  Probably a rabbit.

• 1:07:03Steven Rinella?

Well, no, here, we're getting down, oh geez, the Antarctic fur seal, dude.

• 1:07:09Steven Rinella?

  They don't give a care.

• 1:07:10Speaker 06

  Five percent?

• 1:07:11Steven Rinella?

Two point niner. Killer whales, don't care.

• 1:07:18Speaker 07

  I'd imagine whitetails don't care.

• 1:07:20Steven Rinella?

  Yeah, killer whales, skirt chasers.

• 1:07:21Speaker 06

  Yeah, whitetail.

• 1:07:22Steven Rinella?

Three point three. The Savannah baboon, doesn't care.

• 1:07:28Steven Rinella?

  Chimps.

• 1:07:30Speaker 07

  Getting around.

• 1:07:31Steven Rinella?

Open door policy. Gorillas, open door policy.

• 1:07:40Steven Rinella?

  Ditch cougars, feral cats, 16.

• 1:07:47Speaker 06

I wonder, so like, some of the higher rating, some of the higher ratings, are they measuring like, what if like their partner dies?

• 1:07:59Steven Rinella?

That's all, yeah, cuz that would be-

• 1:08:00Speaker 06

Like, is that how they're doing the study?

• 1:08:02Steven Rinella?

It's just, it's just siblings and half siblings.

• 1:08:04Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 1:08:05Steven Rinella?

So if you get into like, uh, uh, if you get into the, like, the, the, the California deer mouse-

• 1:08:09Speaker 06

  Yep.

• 1:08:10Steven Rinella?

A, a collection of progeny, all their parents, same two parents.

• 1:08:15Speaker 06

  Gotcha.

• 1:08:16Steven Rinella?

  Right?

• 1:08:16Speaker 06

  Yep.

• 1:08:18Steven Rinella?

I mean, I, I got all kinds of half brothers and sisters.

• 1:08:22Steven Rinella?

Right? So I'd throw the whole thing off.

• 1:08:26Steven Rinella?

Here's, you want some squirrel news, Kevin?

• 1:08:29Speaker 05

I'm ready for some squirrel news, hit me.

• 1:08:31Steven Rinella?

Okay. This is from The Economist.

• 1:08:36Steven Rinella?

I didn't know this. In Britain,

• 1:08:41Steven Rinella?

I was making a joke there, I had two buddy of mine in California, we were talking about, like, Britain is trying to ban pretending to fox hunt?

• 1:08:48Speaker 07

  Jeez.

• 1:08:50Steven Rinella?

Like, they ban fox hunt, so then these dudes get where they take a doll, basically, and put fox odor and drag that around?

• 1:08:56Speaker 06

  Pretended that-

• 1:08:57Steven Rinella?

And they pretend to fox hunt, but now and then they'll be out pretending to fox hunt, and the dogs start chasing the real fox that are trying to ban pretending to fox hunt?

• 1:09:03Speaker 07

  Hmm.

• 1:09:04Steven Rinella?

My buddy in California, I said, Britain is like the world's California.

• 1:09:10Steven Rinella?

  And he laughed.

• 1:09:12Steven Rinella?

But, this has nothing to do with that. So Britain has a pine squirrel, or they call it a red squirrel, they got a little shit in red squirrel.

• 1:09:22Steven Rinella?

I didn't know this, they have invasive gray squirrels.

• 1:09:24Speaker 05

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:09:26Steven Rinella?

Now, as I've talked about many times, I was raised to believe that pines, red squirrels bite the nuts off gray squirrels, and, and, and make them eunuchs.

• 1:09:35Speaker 06

Is there any truth to that, Kevin?

• 1:09:36Steven Rinella?

No. It's a wild tale, it's like, it's like witching water.

• 1:09:41Speaker 07

He said you believed in it.

• 1:09:42Steven Rinella?

  It's untrue.

• 1:09:45Speaker 05

Now, the, uh, gray squirrels are really impacting England.

• 1:09:49Steven Rinella?

  I had no idea.

• 1:09:49Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:09:50Steven Rinella?

They now have, estimated, 2.5 million invasive gray squirrels in England, and their native squirrel numbers are down to 39,000.

• 1:10:05Steven Rinella?

They've got a thing. They found that they got a, they got a thing. They've identified how they're gonna try to curb this. They found that gray squirrels have a real hunger

• 1:10:19Steven Rinella?

  for hazelnut butter.

• 1:10:22Speaker 06

  They poisoning the hazelnut butter?

• 1:10:25Steven Rinella?

They've established a red squirrel recovery network. This is, this is researchers within the government's Animal Plant and Health Agency.

• 1:10:35Steven Rinella?

They're loading, you know, because it's Britain, so they're not gonna put poison in it. They're loading it with contraceptives.

• 1:10:48Steven Rinella?

Okay, this is like when, this is one like, uh, this is what happens when

• 1:10:57Steven Rinella?

when ecology, restoration of native species, habitat work runs up against like radical animal rights elements when you have to start talking about that you're gonna use contraceptives. It's like with the wild horse problem. You can't talk about killing them. There are some, well, maybe we can give them contraceptives. And we'll have to catch every one and give it an update every six months to make sure it doesn't have any babies.

• 1:11:23Steven Rinella?

So they have this contraceptive bait. And they have, they're developing a feeder that, um, the squirrel has to have a certain mass that has a certain weight in order to get into the freezer. So 90% of adult gray squirrels are heavy enough to activate it to get the bait. A red squirrel, he tries to go eat the contraceptive, he can't get the bait.

• 1:11:50Steven Rinella?

Previously, they've focused their efforts on cooling gray squirrels.

• 1:11:58Steven Rinella?

But they say it's been expensive.

• 1:12:01Speaker 06

  I can only imagine.

• 1:12:02Steven Rinella?

Physically, calling, I'm guessing they don't mean like, not physically, but I guess they mean not through poison campaigns, but through shooting them. And granted, I get the poison thing. You could have, I get it.

• 1:12:14Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:12:14Steven Rinella?

I get it. You could have stuff getting in there, then you got toxins laying around. I had no idea.

• 1:12:22Steven Rinella?

Kevin, you and your dogs can maybe go raise hell over there.

• 1:12:24Speaker 05

You know, I have a few people on Instagram and they'll send me occasional picture of them going on a squirrel hunt. I just recently got one from a family and they had a young son and he had his dog, four or five gray squirrels, had the, the, uh, his daughter had a red rider BB gun.

• 1:12:42Steven Rinella?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:12:42Speaker 05

And they hunted there and I asked him, says, hey, just tell me a little bit about your firearms over there. Says, how hard is to get one? He says, we can get a shotgun, pretty easy. Nope, not much hassle. But he says, to get a rifle, like five years.

• 1:12:58Steven Rinella?

  Hmm.

• 1:12:58Speaker 05

To get one. And he said, you've got to have a specific purp- purpose, probably on some land before you can get, get a rifle. Shotgun's pretty easy, but yeah, I have a few people send me stuff from over there on the gray squirrels.

• 1:13:11Steven Rinella?

Have you ever heard of anybody over there squirrel dogging?

• 1:13:15Speaker 05

They had a dog. I don't know if it actually treed, but it helped, helped them in, into, into the hunt. And some of the hunt clubs, they organize hunts now to go out and they do that polling thing. And they'll go in and, and harvest a big, big bunch of squirrels.

• 1:13:30Steven Rinella?

Yep. Here, here's, here's a good one. This is from the journal nature.

• 1:13:38Steven Rinella?

This takes a little bit of background. So in the journal nature, these researchers, um, they're working in South Africa. Okay.

• 1:13:49Steven Rinella?

  Have found arrowheads, stone arrowheads

• 1:13:54Steven Rinella?

that they have dated to 60,000 years.

• 1:14:00Steven Rinella?

That contain plant toxins. But let's back up. What are you guys all staring at?

• 1:14:05Speaker 06

I'm looking at the cameras, making sure they're rolling for Phil.

• 1:14:09Steven Rinella?

I thought maybe it was time we had to leave.

• 1:14:10Speaker 07

  Well, we're getting there.

• 1:14:11Steven Rinella?

Yeah, well, give me a minute here.

• 1:14:17Steven Rinella?

You can't age, so someone should go read this because you can't age a stone point. You have to, you can only age it by context. Like you can't take. Di- Kevin's give me.

• 1:14:31Speaker 05

Amateur archaeologist here, I just come off.

• 1:14:33Steven Rinella?

No, no, you're, yes, there are.

• 1:14:36Speaker 05

Luminous test, I don't know how they work, I don't know how accurate they are.

• 1:14:40Steven Rinella?

Okay, oh, so you're talking about actually aging the stone.

• 1:14:43Speaker 05

Actually just don't, some kind of luminous.

• 1:14:45Steven Rinella?

The last time it was exposed to sunlight or something like that.

• 1:14:48Speaker 05

I just found out, I don't know any dynamics about it whatsoever, but that's how they age those artifacts that don't have carbon 14 or anything with them.

• 1:14:56Steven Rinella?

  Okay.

• 1:14:56Speaker 05

  So.

• 1:14:57Steven Rinella?

  So.

• 1:15:00Steven Rinella?

There, the, these reasons, and I haven't read the piece, okay.

• 1:15:06Steven Rinella?

60,000 years and they're finding plant toxins on stone points in South Africa from 60,000 years ago. When you get into like this idea, it, the, the numbers switch, but this, there's, there's this term people use of like anatomically and behaviorally modern humans. Meaning if you went and got a human from 50,000 years ago. And kidnapped him.

• 1:15:34Steven Rinella?

And brought him in and ra- and took him in a time machine and raised him today. He'd be able to like fly an airplane and walk around on the streets and wouldn't look weird.

• 1:15:45Speaker 05

Do you think, do I think that?

• 1:15:47Steven Rinella?

  Just saying.

• 1:15:48Speaker 05

  That's what is that?

• 1:15:49Steven Rinella?

Yeah, it's, there's like a debate, was it like, but it usually centers around 50,000 years ago, 70,000 years ago, people were like behaviorally and anatomically modern humans at that time. Looked would have been dead ringers, right? For people alive, could be like lawyers, pilots. Cat trappers.

• 1:16:11Steven Rinella?

The complicated stuff at that time, you're looking skeptical. This isn't my number.

• 1:16:16Speaker 05

I'm just thinking, I'm just thinking, you know, I'm not saying right or wrong.

• 1:16:20Steven Rinella?

So these guys um found toxins derived from a plant whose common name is the poison bulb plant and it's still used by traditional hunters today. When Seth and I were in Africa, some of the trackers, the trackers were poachers that they caught. They catch poachers and some of them, they turn them into trackers. Some of them, you turn them into the police. These guys were telling us when they were kids, 13, 14 years old, they were hunting with plant poisons for Cape buffalo with poisons. So these are poisons still used today and they're finding traces of them on projectile points from 60,000 years ago. And it's a

• 1:17:05Steven Rinella?

complex cooking process to to to isolate and activate the poison. Slowly weaken spray. It's just interesting.

• 1:17:15Speaker 05

  Oh, very interesting.

• 1:17:15Steven Rinella?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:16Speaker 05

  Very interesting.

• 1:17:18Steven Rinella?

That these that dudes might have been that long ago cooking up in South Africa, 60,000 years ago, which is getting to the point where you can't even comprehend. Like humans, like you can throw the number around, but you can't really picture what that means. 60,000 years ago, three times longer ago than there were humans at all in the new world.

• 1:17:38Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:17:40Steven Rinella?

Three times. So you imagine how long ago that was. That some dude in America trying to bring, you know, kill a mastodon, three times longer ago than that. Dudes in Africa mixing up plant toxins.

• 1:17:54Speaker 05

See, I was at the Galt site. It's four hours from here and that's probably the oldest documented inhabited site in the US of 7,000 years before Clovis, 20,000. And then I'm I'm digging at a current site in Kentucky and our artifacts are dating around. Uh, fourteen, five, fifteen thousand years ago.

• 1:18:17Steven Rinella?

  In association with mastodon.

• 1:18:19Speaker 05

  Mastodon and mammoths.

• 1:18:20Steven Rinella?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:21Speaker 05

One of the few sites in the world where you have both species occurring. And this year, under the zones of concentrated water, we also found a piece of, of, uh, what is it? The moose elk antler, the moose elk?

• 1:18:39Steven Rinella?

  Yep.

• 1:18:39Speaker 05

So we found a section about that in situ, in the ground, planted at that site. So.

• 1:18:46Steven Rinella?

  Is it fossil? Is it?

• 1:18:48Speaker 05

No, it's still bone. Still bone. It was under two meters, you know, six foot of overfield laying rat on the bedrock.

• 1:18:56Steven Rinella?

  Gotcha.

• 1:18:57Speaker 05

Hmm. Little section of that. Wow. It looked like it had been worked by humans. You know, it was just this kind of piece that looked like, you know, there's no artwork on it, no defined structure. You could, you know, it's like fifty fifty. Did a human use this for some kind of tool? Maybe, maybe not.

• 1:19:14Steven Rinella?

  Yep.

• 1:19:15Speaker 05

In there. But we have found ivory spear points.

• 1:19:18Steven Rinella?

  We found that pecker too.

• 1:19:19Speaker 05

We found the pecker of the lower. I didn't even not, I didn't even know that a mastodon had a lower tusk. And they're usually eight to twelve inches long. The lower pecker's set in my hand in there and it was, is the shape of it and it was polished.

• 1:19:35Steven Rinella?

Oh, yeah. You look, a lot of times you hear like, someone's like, oh, it's like a, you know, it's like carved into whatever. And you look and you're like, yeah, maybe, maybe it's just luck.

• 1:19:42Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:19:43Steven Rinella?

You know that term of geofact? Like, it's like a phony, like, you know, it's like, you find a rock and you think it's something.

• 1:19:49Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:19:49Steven Rinella?

And then a guy will be like, it's a geofact. Like, it was just the earth made it and it resembles a thing. That pecker is a pecker.

• 1:19:57Speaker 05

It's, it is. And here's a unique opportunity for people. We're gonna have a major dig there, starting in September to October. Uh, we need earth movers. You can come out and do some real archaeology with, uh, uh, Dr. Grambling. He's a trained anthropologist, seventy-nine years old. We've been working that site for four years now. It's a lot of history there. It was the last battle of the Revolutionary War.

• 1:20:23Steven Rinella?

  Battle of Blue Lick.

• 1:20:24Speaker 05

  Ten months.

• 1:20:25Steven Rinella?

Daniel Boone's kid was killed there.

• 1:20:26Speaker 05

Ten months after the Revolutionary War was over, the British were still trying to control the Northwest Territory and they ambushed Daniel Boone and his party. And like you said.

• 1:20:37Steven Rinella?

I think shot his boy through the throat from that mistake.

• 1:20:39Speaker 05

His, his son died in his arm. You can walk down to the river and actually see the Ford. I've been aiming like to wait across it because it gets pretty low. You could ride a horse across it. No, no problem at all. But it's just mesmerizing to be at that site. All that history that Daniel Boone and the salt works, they were come there to do the salt. Uh, the, the megafauna came in there and they habited that, that area. You know, we've got big bone lick in Kentucky that's been, been robbed and traumatized from the original settlers that came in.

• 1:21:15Steven Rinella?

  I bet that one.

• 1:21:16Speaker 05

Sent the bones back to England and stuff. They didn't know what a mastodon was at that time. But just to go down there and dig on something and find that, you know, everything we get, we have to, to kill. But you see fractured pieces of, of, uh, mastodon ivory, which is totally different than a mammoth ivory. Uh, the teeth are different where a mastodon, its main diet is, uh, woody shrub bushes and stuff. And a mammoth is a hay eater. So they have flat, flat molars. So it's just really unique to be able to do that. So like I said, we need volunteers. Just kind of, kind of watch my, um, Instagram, Facebook, whatever. I'll probably put up some kind of notice.

• 1:21:56Steven Rinella?

See, what I want you to do is plug, I don't want you to plug that. Cause I want you to plug your other volunteer project.

• 1:22:03Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:22:04Steven Rinella?

So everybody ignore what he just said. Because I think the other one's more important.

• 1:22:10Speaker 05

  Uh, it is to me.

• 1:22:12Steven Rinella?

  Yeah. So, yeah.

• 1:22:13Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:22:13Steven Rinella?

Let me do one last thing.

• 1:22:14Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:22:15Steven Rinella?

  One last news item.

• 1:22:16Speaker 05

But we still need help. It's gonna be fun.

• 1:22:19Speaker 06

  I'll come Kevin.

• 1:22:21Steven Rinella?

This is Texas news. Cause we're in Texas. I want to do one last Texas, two Texas news bits.

• 1:22:25Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:22:25Steven Rinella?

And then you're going to do your deal and then we got to wrap it up.

• 1:22:27Speaker 05

  Okay. All right.

• 1:22:28Speaker 07

Yeah, make it quick. Cause we got 10 minutes.

• 1:22:30Steven Rinella?

  Okay. Check this one out.

• 1:22:33Steven Rinella?

We reported on this before. Trying to decide the guys surf casters using drones to drop bait.

• 1:22:41Speaker 06

  Mm hmm.

• 1:22:43Steven Rinella?

Like some surf casting, you paddle way out and drop your bait when you're trying to get it out past like the second sandbar or whatever. So guys started using drones. Texas that doesn't like to run around banning stuff, just generally speaking.

• 1:22:57Steven Rinella?

They're like a banning things averse state.

• 1:23:01Speaker 06

  Anti banning.

• 1:23:02Steven Rinella?

They're anti banning state. They clarified.

• 1:23:08Steven Rinella?

That the use of unmanned aircraft systems for fishing. Will fall under the federal airborne, fall under prohibition under the federal airborne hunting act.

• 1:23:23Steven Rinella?

They're saying this is not a new ban.

• 1:23:27Steven Rinella?

But that's how they're going to interpret it going forward. It's a statute that's been around since 1956. They're saying you are not allowed in Texas. The way they're, they're not making a new law, they're clarifying how they interpret it. So it's all to you, if you're fishing with drones, it's all the same thing. They're saying. Texas parks and wildlife department is saying. You can't use a drone for fishing.

• 1:23:53Speaker 06

Yeah. It's now become a thing to do and they're.

• 1:23:57Steven Rinella?

  Yep.

• 1:23:57Speaker 06

  Just re clarifying that.

• 1:23:58Steven Rinella?

Yep, they didn't need to go pass legislation specifically because they're saying it was already illegal.

• 1:24:03Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:24:03Steven Rinella?

Mm hmm. It was already illegal. We weren't interpreting at that, we're interpreting it now, just to clarify to everybody. You cannot take a drone and drop your bait. Out for sharks, past the second sandbar, whatever the hell you're up to. The last thing we're not going to spend any time on, but it is Texas, I want to hit it real quick. It's a real obvious one.

• 1:24:21Steven Rinella?

So much suburban sprawl in areas of Texas and urban areas that is creating a hog explosion. Around urban areas, it's the same thing you see with deer. Where it's like. You make areas where you make more and more and more and more areas closed to hunting. And you get more and more landowners like, well, I don't want anybody to hunt, but I shouldn't want all these pigs running around.

• 1:24:43Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:24:43Steven Rinella?

Or I should, the last thing I want is some redneck hunting deer in my yard, but I also want fishing game agency to come get all their damn deer out of here.

• 1:24:51Speaker 06

  Yep.

• 1:24:53Steven Rinella?

Just, it's a story that just never stops repeating itself.

• 1:24:56Speaker 05

Oh, we have it rampant with deer right now.

• 1:24:58Steven Rinella?

Get these deer out of here. Why don't you let a hunter on there?

• 1:25:01Speaker 05

I'm not letting those rednecks on here.

• 1:25:04Speaker 05

Get them out of my landscaping.

• 1:25:06Steven Rinella?

  Um, we're out of time.

• 1:25:09Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:25:11Steven Rinella?

You're doing, you're involved in a habitat restoration project.

• 1:25:15Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:25:15Steven Rinella?

Hit it clean, hit it clean, hit it quick. You need, Kevin Murphy needs you.

• 1:25:18Speaker 05

I need tree huggers, tree planters, wakeboarders, people that like to fish. We're gonna plant 2,000 cypress trees.

• 1:25:26Steven Rinella?

  Oh yeah, guilt ridden wakeboarders.

• 1:25:29Speaker 05

I'll take anybody. I want to bring people together.

• 1:25:31Steven Rinella?

  Yeah, guilt ridden wakeboarders.

• 1:25:32Speaker 05

That is my thing. I want to see.

• 1:25:34Steven Rinella?

You have a pissed off fisherman and guilt ridden wakeboarders down there fighting.

• 1:25:38Speaker 05

So we got 2,000 five foot cypress trees that we're gonna try to get, get planted on the shore of Lake Barkley. I've been doing this project for six years. And during that six year time period, I've only been able to plant 2,000. I've got my technique down. Good now, we got fishing game department, Kentucky fishing game department's gonna come in and help us. U.S. Corps of Engineers is gonna donate some money to help us out. And it's gonna be a great time.

• 1:26:05Steven Rinella?

And what's your lifetime goal? You want to do how many miles of shoreline?

• 1:26:07Speaker 05

I want to do 22 miles. The north shore of Lake Barkley. The shoreline of the Cumberland River. It takes a beating from the north wind in the wintertime when the lake pool comes down. Summer pool is 360, winter pool is 354. So we have this long mud flat in there. That we used to be covered with button bush, but due to the Corps of Engineers changing the plan of the drawdown. It, it has flooded all the button bush back. So cypress trees, they can tolerate water. They do not like water.

• 1:26:40Steven Rinella?

All your croppy habitat is gone.

• 1:26:42Speaker 05

Yes, all the cover, the croppy habitat is gone. So I am, my, my goal in life is to get this started, which I already have.

• 1:26:50Steven Rinella?

How many miles have you done so far?

• 1:26:52Speaker 05

Probably about two miles. So I got another 20 to go, but I've upped it. I've learned how to do it. In the beginning, we used some larger trees. It took bigger hose. They didn't stand. Up very well. Now we use a slender, like I said, it's a, uh, I think a three year old tree. Uh, it'd be about as big around as your thumb, like a wisp. And we want them high enough that, that they can take that.

• 1:27:15Speaker 06

  Take water.

• 1:27:16Speaker 05

  Water elevation there.

• 1:27:17Steven Rinella?

He's gotta be high enough to have his nose out of the water when it comes up.

• 1:27:21Speaker 05

We have learned to stake them. We drive a wooden stake in the ground. We give them a fertilizer pellet. Tie them to the stake and we flag them with, uh, uh, flagging tape, do a real dense planting there. It may be from, from this wall to this wall along the shoreline. So we have instant infrastructure for croppy fishing. In the springtime.

• 1:27:41Steven Rinella?

  Just every couple of.

• 1:27:41Speaker 05

It's just immediately there with the wooden, the hardwood stakes, they last. And we did it for the first time that way last year. I was able to put in a huge amount of trees in a, in a short, one side of Devonport Bay is where we're going to be. We were on the, uh, east side last year. We're going to be on the west side this year. And then, uh, in those rocky areas, we, uh, uh, only plant trees about every 10 steps or so, because it's just too hard to do it. But we're going to have a continuous from edible fairy down to nickel branch.

• 1:28:14Steven Rinella?

So how do volunteers find you?

• 1:28:16Speaker 05

  Uh, just watch my Instagram.

• 1:28:17Steven Rinella?

  Tell everybody what it is.

• 1:28:19Speaker 05

Uh, Kevin Murphy at Small Game Nation.

• 1:28:21Steven Rinella?

Kevin Murphy at Small Game Nation.

• 1:28:24Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 1:28:24Steven Rinella?

If you want to help Kevin start planting Cypress trees. To do habitat restoration. Get a hold of him and help him out. And here's a trivia one for you. What is the number one problem? Number one killer of Kevin Cypress trees?

• 1:28:42Speaker 06

  Wake borders.

• 1:28:44Speaker 05

  Wake border.

• 1:28:45Steven Rinella?

  No.

• 1:28:46Speaker 05

  Recreationist.

• 1:28:47Steven Rinella?

No. Something we all love. Number one killer.

• 1:28:51Speaker 06

  Turkeys?

• 1:28:51Steven Rinella?

  No.

• 1:28:52Speaker 06

  Deer? Whitetail.

• 1:28:53Speaker 05

  Deer.

• 1:28:54Steven Rinella?

He says they want to rub their antlers on them. They kill them all.

• 1:28:57Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 1:28:58Steven Rinella?

He's got a 40% survival from bucks coming out there and rubbing on them.

• 1:29:01Speaker 05

That you would. Maybe think beaver or something, but, but the most detrimental thing is the little scrawny ass whitetail buck wants to come in there and beat up on my cycle.

• 1:29:10Steven Rinella?

Cause they're real limber, so they kinda like, cause the trees thrash all around. They look like a tough guy.

• 1:29:16Speaker 06

Kevin, you're a squirrel man, a dog man, and now you're a tree man.

• 1:29:19Steven Rinella?

  Tree man, cypress man.

• 1:29:20Speaker 07

Can you put tubes on them?

• 1:29:22Speaker 05

I, I think that it, it wouldn't help. I don't know. We might try that this year. We went to a smaller tree. That was the larger trees that we had. Like almost, you know, inch and a half, two inch. So we've using the whipped trees now with, uh, the stakes. So hopefully they're dense enough that them, they'll stay out of it.

• 1:29:40Steven Rinella?

Maybe like little landmines and poison pellets.

• 1:29:44Speaker 05

But there again, you know, we don't have the browse and LBL like we had at one time.

• 1:29:49Speaker 07

  Just throwing that out there.

• 1:29:50Speaker 05

Gotta get you a piece of fruitcake here. I've got it all sliced up.

• 1:29:55Steven Rinella?

I haven't eaten anything yet today. We've been running hard.

• 1:29:58Speaker 05

Had a great time with you guys as always.

• 1:30:00Steven Rinella?

Dude, Kevin, give me a, give me a handshake, man. Every time. I learn a lot. I love you.

• 1:30:04Speaker 07

  Thanks, Kevin.

• 1:30:05Speaker 05

Y'all make me able to, uh, date two decades under my age bracket. So I appreciate that.

• 1:30:12Speaker 06

I can't wait to, uh, see what you do with that hog.

• 1:30:15Speaker 05

Well, we're gonna make sausage. It's my temp. I'm gonna take a small portion of it, grind it up, test it and see if it's gonna turn out.

• 1:30:22Steven Rinella?

Well, yeah. I, I, I wish you good luck cooking your hog. I mainly wish you good luck getting your trees in, man. I'd love to see you get that 22 miles done. That'd be cool before you die. Oh, when he dies, I get his hat.

• 1:30:33Speaker 06

  Yeah, that is true.

• 1:30:34Steven Rinella?

  That's cool.

• 1:30:36Speaker 06

  Where's that hat?

• 1:30:38Steven Rinella?

All right, everybody. Thanks a lot.

• 1:30:39Speaker 07

  Thank you.

• 1:31:06Steven Rinella?

If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you got dogs, you got kids, you know how hard it is to keep the floor of your rig clean. A thing we do in our, in our little fleet of vehicles that I have at my household, if you go look, open the door on any one of them, they all got WeatherTech. We get a car, we throw the mats out and put in WeatherTech. Cause that way, when there's a mess, it's like your kid's fault, your dog's fault, it's the weather's fault, doesn't matter. You take them suckers out and hose them off and you're back to being good as new. I'm telling you, if you've got a vehicle, put WeatherTech in there, you're gonna be happy you did it. And check this out, American-made floor liners and cargo liners, okay? They laugh in the face of all weather. Go take a look for yourself today at weathertech.com. OnX Hunt is full of great features. I always say it's my favorite app. I use the thing

• 1:31:50Steven Rinella?

on a daily basis. Here's a new feature I'm very excited about. OnX Hunt's location sharing puts your whole group on one live map. So you can look and tell where everyone is. And if at night it gets dark and someone's not back yet, you don't gotta guess what happened to them or where they are. You can just look and tell where they are. It has implications for safety, coordination. I can't even list all the ways in which this is helpful. You opt in and then when you guys are done, the data goes away. It's not stored. Keep the folks in your deer camp on the same page with location sharing from OnX Hunt. You need credit to buy, well, pretty much any big thing. So how do you get started?
