I've got some new tour dates that I'm telling you about here. I'll be in Winnipeg, Canada, Los Angeles, California, Anaheim, Oceanside and Calgary, Canada. That is the end of that tour. I gotta take some time off to take care of myself and so I'm looking forward to that. You can get tickets at theovon.com/TOUR. Thank you guys so much for the support and I look forward to seeing you guys soon. Today's guest is a singer-songwriter out of Scotland. He just made a triumphant return to Glastonbury after taking some time off to focus on himself. He has a new song called Survive which is out now, streaming everywhere.

• 1:15Theo Von?

I'm grateful for today's guest. He's a class lad, Mr. Lewis Capaldi.

• 1:39Speaker 02

I feel like I'm in the thing.

• 1:43Speaker 02

I feel like I've stepped through the screen. Do you know what I mean? Here we are.

• 1:45Speaker 03

Oh, here we are, lad. Class.

• 1:48Speaker 02

  Class.

• 1:49Speaker 03

  Class lads.

• 1:52Theo Von?

Yeah, it's hard to understand. I feel like it's hard to understand the Scottish sometimes.

• 1:55Speaker 02

Yeah, I'd say it's the hardest that because we've not got the international identity that Irish people have.

• 2:01Theo Von?

  Right.

• 2:01Speaker 02

Do you know what I mean? So everyone kind of knows the Irish accent, but I feel like Scotland is like Ireland's sort of like ugly little sister. No one really like, do you know what I mean? People, we don't have that sort of like international thing.

• 2:12Theo Von?

Yeah, Ireland has that thing like the, you know, they have like the leprechaun or whatever. Do you guys have a version of the leprechaun?

• 2:19Speaker 02

I guess like William Wallace is like the only.

• 2:21Theo Von?

Oh, he's a powerful leprechaun then.

• 2:23Speaker 02

  Yeah, exactly. Yeah, big man.

• 2:24Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 2:25Speaker 02

  Big man thing.

• 2:25Theo Von?

Yeah, I wonder who the Irish version of the leprechaun, just like a regular guy that needs help probably.

• 2:31Theo Von?

It's just like a guy that just like it can't get his grandmother on the phone or something.

• 2:37Theo Von?

Oh dude, good to see you today, man.

• 2:40Speaker 02

Good to see you too, man. Thank you for having us.

• 2:42Theo Von?

Thank you for all the beautiful music, man.

• 2:44Speaker 02

  Thank you. No, I'm, yeah, that's what I, that's what I do.

• 2:47Theo Von?

  I appreciate it.

• 2:48Speaker 02

  Thanks for all the laughs.

• 2:50Theo Von?

  Okay, we're even.

• 2:55Theo Von?

It's cool how something can cross like to a total different culture. I mean, that's kind of fascinating, you know? That I could go to Scotland and have people come see a show and that you could come here and have people.

• 3:04Speaker 02

Yeah, man, it's, it's wild, especially because I don't think you ever, well, I don't know about you, but like I never get into this thinking about like, I never assumed that I would be in America doing things like this. Or like people would come see shows or anything like that. So yeah, it's mad. It's just like, it always feels like a bit of a blessing.

• 3:22Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 3:22Speaker 02

Coming over here and doing this.

• 3:24Theo Von?

In a dream, sometimes it feels like, I think, or I don't, does it ever feel to you like you're living in a dream kind of in a weird way?

• 3:31Speaker 02

Yeah, for sure. I think especially like I took two years off there and like, I was sort of living this sort of mundane day to day.

• 3:39Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 3:40Speaker 02

Life, but it was just a, so it was weird now being back, being back in it all, sort of the last few weeks has been a bit of a mad. Yeah, like a, yeah, it feels out of body and a bit strange, but I'm loving it.

• 3:52Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 3:52Speaker 02

  It's great. It's the best.

• 3:53Theo Von?

And you did, uh, did you do Good Morning America?

• 3:55Speaker 02

  I did just this morning.

• 3:56Theo Von?

  No.

• 3:58Speaker 02

  I've been up since four.

• 4:00Theo Von?

  Oh, it's early.

• 4:01Speaker 02

It is early, but we're kind of jet lagged, so I kind of, it kind of played into my, my hand.

• 4:06Theo Von?

  It evens out maybe.

• 4:07Speaker 02

  But it was good.

• 4:08Theo Von?

They should call it goodbye, America. I feel like we're.

• 4:10Speaker 02

  What's going on?

• 4:11Theo Von?

Oh, yeah. Oh, we're about to get on a boat and come back. You know what I'm saying? Where's the port?

• 4:16Speaker 02

  Oh, there I am.

• 4:17Theo Von?

  Oh, that was you today?

• 4:18Speaker 02

That's literally me earlier on, wearing, yeah, yeah, wearing a nice green jacket.

• 4:21Theo Von?

Oh, that's beautiful. And who's the ginger there on the, on the, uh?

• 4:25Speaker 02

That's my, that's my piano player, Aiden.

• 4:26Theo Von?

  Oh, sorry, Aiden.

• 4:28Speaker 02

Aiden. He is, he is ginger. He's very ginger.

• 4:29Theo Von?

Okay, good. We've classified him then, yeah.

• 4:32Speaker 02

  No, but he's a, he's a good man. I, uh.

• 4:34Theo Von?

It's like the scarlet letter of haircuts. I feel like being a ginger, you know?

• 4:37Speaker 02

Exactly. He's a, he's maybe the most redheaded guy I've ever met.

• 4:41Theo Von?

  Wow.

• 4:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 4:41Theo Von?

  And is he a Scotsman?

• 4:43Speaker 02

He is a Scotsman. They're all Scot. Well, the drummer, my drummer is a very posh English man named Freddie.

• 4:48Theo Von?

  Ooh.

• 4:49Speaker 02

Yeah, I know, I know. It's, but it's quite, it was a weird thing. We looked for a drummer for a long time. And he was like, uh, we, we kind of went through a lot. It was like speed dating, went for a lot of different drummers and it was like this really posh English guy that fit in with these sort of normal, um, Scottish men. So it's been lovely. Oh, there he is. That's Freddie.

• 5:08Theo Von?

  Oh, there he is.

• 5:08Speaker 02

This is well good how quick you guys are on the.

• 5:11Theo Von?

And he's doing well. Look at him.

• 5:12Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. He's doing, he's doing very well. Just had a little child, a little baby.

• 5:15Theo Von?

  Oh, God.

• 5:16Speaker 02

Well, about a year ago now. So, um, she's, uh, yeah, she's a, she's nice. I mean, she's fine. I mean, I don't know. Baby, as babies go.

• 5:23Theo Von?

  I don't know her.

• 5:24Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. As babies go. Yeah. She doesn't say much.

• 5:26Theo Von?

Yeah. She emails late at night, though.

• 5:29Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. She gets on that laptop and really.

• 5:31Theo Von?

  Occasionally rattle off.

• 5:33Speaker 02

She'll fire off a few emails. Yeah, yeah. Strongly wanted.

• 5:35Theo Von?

Um, what, yeah, dude, I've been to Scotland before. We did Glasgow and did a show over there.

• 5:39Speaker 02

Yes. Um, uh, how, how did you find it?

• 5:42Theo Von?

Oh, it was quite, it reminded me a bit of like, uh, a lot of people, like day labor, like kind of like contractor type of people, like.

• 5:52Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Proper, like working class.

• 5:54Theo Von?

  Working class.

• 5:55Speaker 02

  Yeah. Blue, blue collar.

• 5:56Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 5:56Speaker 02

  Color over here. Yeah, yeah.

• 5:57Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 5:58Speaker 02

  Down and dirty.

• 5:59Theo Von?

  Or like a dark blue.

• 6:01Speaker 02

Navy, navy almost. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 6:03Theo Von?

Yeah, definitely. Uh, I mean, guys, some of them, they would, you know, one of them would talk and one of them would whistle, just like a unique. You know, like one guy, you had to tickle them to get the truth out of them. You know, just a lot of like special, just unique folk.

• 6:16Speaker 02

Yeah, it's a, it's a great place. I love Glasgow. I don't like, I kind of split my time now between Glasgow and London. But yeah, I always miss it when I go.

• 6:24Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 6:24Speaker 02

It's just a different sort of, um, yeah, different type of person that you get maybe than in the London's.

• 6:30Theo Von?

Oh yeah, dude. They're a bit more refined there. They're a bit more like, uh, kind of like you see like those nutcrackers at Christmas and they're all like polished and like,

• 6:39Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 6:40Theo Von?

You know, they have like a nice hat and like a little thing.

• 6:43Speaker 02

  Yeah, like your Cat Williams.

• 6:44Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 6:46Theo Von?

They're a bit more Cat Williams over there in London.

• 6:49Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 6:49Theo Von?

And then you get to Scotland and it's just some guy fucking licking a pitchfork, you know?

• 6:55Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 6:55Theo Von?

Hoping for the best. I love that.

• 6:57Speaker 02

Yeah, I love that shit, man. It's fucking, it's pretty special. But yeah, it's a great place. Glasgow, been there. But you're in, you're in Nashville now.

• 7:04Theo Von?

Yeah, I live in Nashville now.

• 7:05Speaker 02

I love Nashville. We're going there on Wednesday.

• 7:09Theo Von?

  This Wednesday?

• 7:10Speaker 02

  I think so, yeah.

• 7:10Theo Von?

  Oh, Christ.

• 7:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:13Theo Von?

  I'll be gone.

• 7:13Speaker 02

  Yeah, I'm not just.

• 7:14Theo Von?

  But we're here.

• 7:15Speaker 02

We're here now. We're here now enjoying this in the Chelsea Hotel.

• 7:18Theo Von?

This is it. Yeah, the Chelsea Hotel, a famous place.

• 7:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:21Theo Von?

Um, yeah, so many interesting people. We interviewed, actually in this room, Craig from Craigslist, the guy that started Craigslist.

• 7:28Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 7:29Theo Von?

  And.

• 7:30Speaker 02

  How's he?

• 7:30Theo Von?

Oh, he is, he's got a, he just.

• 7:34Speaker 02

  A lot going on.

• 7:35Theo Von?

A lot. I mean, think of all the things that are passing through. You got a used car. You have somebody, you know, selling homemade Narcan. You got a lot of shit passing through. You know, you got a lot of shit in your inbox.

• 7:44Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, of course. Has he still, has he sold it or does he still own it?

• 7:47Theo Von?

He has a partial ownership. I believe this is correct. He has a partial ownership, but he's not active with it anymore.

• 7:52Speaker 02

  Sure. Right, okay.

• 7:54Theo Von?

And now he's just like a philanthropist, but he was a very unique man. Craig Newmark was his name.

• 7:58Speaker 02

Craig Newmark, yeah. Shout out Craig Newmark.

• 8:00Theo Von?

  Yeah, shout out Craig.

• 8:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:01Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 8:01Speaker 02

Well, we, we wouldn't say Craig, we'd say Craig.

• 8:04Theo Von?

  Oh, Craig.

• 8:04Speaker 02

  Craig, Craigslist, it'd be called.

• 8:06Theo Von?

Oh, Craigslist. Oh, that sounds even more risque.

• 8:09Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah. Misconnections, etc.

• 8:11Theo Von?

It sounds like, yeah, you might meet a dentist in the dark on there.

• 8:14Speaker 02

  Yeah, Craig, Craig.

• 8:15Theo Von?

  Craig.

• 8:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:16Theo Von?

And what does Craig mean? Does it mean something in?

• 8:19Speaker 02

I don't know. I just, uh, it's their name. Uh, I think. I don't know if it's like, uh, I don't know if it's a, if it has any true meaning in it. It might be warrior.

• 8:28Theo Von?

  Craig.

• 8:29Speaker 02

Oh, Paul Craig. There you are. He once called me a loser on his podcast.

• 8:33Theo Von?

  Oh damn, Paul. Really?

• 8:36Speaker 02

He said, I actually quite like Paul Craig, but he said I should lose weight and that I was a loser.

• 8:44Theo Von?

Well, dude, if he lost weight, he'd be a loser then technically.

• 8:49Speaker 02

  Exactly, yeah, the biggest loser.

• 8:50Theo Von?

Yeah, don't give him the title before you.

• 8:52Speaker 02

But I saw the clip, but Paul, congratulations on everything. Sorry about what happened at the last UFC.

• 9:00Theo Von?

Sorry Lewis, it didn't enough for you?

• 9:01Speaker 02

  Yeah, sorry, bro. Sorry, man.

• 9:05Speaker 02

Paul Craig. No, but that would be Craig. Yeah, Craig.

• 9:08Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 9:09Speaker 02

  Anyway.

• 9:09Theo Von?

  Paul Craig.

• 9:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:11Theo Von?

Yeah, dude, the Scots, man, they're fascinating. They're just fascinating. You'd almost, like, I wouldn't be surprised if he was in the US, you know, or you're in a zoo and they had a couple in there somewhere. Like, you know, they're taken care of and everything.

• 9:25Speaker 02

  Drinking, sort of like.

• 9:27Theo Von?

They're healthy in there, yelling at you.

• 9:29Speaker 02

Yeah, screaming at the fences and stuff like that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sounds like us.

• 9:34Theo Von?

Or singing like a good, um, do they have like a lot of good like Scottish songs and stuff?

• 9:38Speaker 02

Oh, Flare of Scotland, when will we see your leg again? And fought and died for your wee bettling claim that stood against him. Proud Edward's army and sent him home once to think again. Come on, it's got us. Yeah, yeah, that's, that's us. That's, that's a good one that we've got. We've also got, um, what's your name? Ali Bali, Ali Bali B, sitting on your mommy's knee. That's a good one. I don't know where it goes after that.

• 10:20Theo Von?

Well, that one ends in the courts, I think. It sounds like, you know?

• 10:22Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 10:23Theo Von?

That sounds like a domestics dispute, you know? But yeah, I just, I think, yeah, the, the most fascinating, kind of like Scotland, it's like the DIY England, you know?

• 10:32Speaker 02

  Yeah, exactly. Yeah, it's like.

• 10:34Theo Von?

  We'll fucking figure it out.

• 10:35Speaker 02

Yeah, we'll, we'll be fine up there. But although we did, not to get into independence, but we did vote, vote, vote to not leave the England. People think Scottish people hate English people, but it's not true. I love, I love English people.

• 10:49Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 10:49Speaker 02

I love, I love them so much.

• 10:52Theo Von?

  Yeah, I don't, I know.

• 10:53Speaker 02

I don't have anything against English people.

• 10:54Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 10:55Speaker 02

In fact, um. I love, love them.

• 10:59Theo Von?

If I saw him, I would definitely pat him on the back.

• 11:01Speaker 02

Yeah, come pat him back and like a little, like one of those little like love taps on like on the back, on the back, on the backside.

• 11:07Theo Von?

  On the, yeah.

• 11:07Speaker 02

  Send them on the way.

• 11:08Theo Von?

  On the low back.

• 11:09Speaker 02

Yeah, just the low back. Yeah, consensually.

• 11:11Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 11:12Speaker 02

  Of course.

• 11:12Theo Von?

Yeah, it seems like there's a lot more. You have to be very consensual over there.

• 11:16Speaker 02

Yeah, I think everywhere it's good to be consensual.

• 11:19Theo Von?

  Good call. Sorry.

• 11:20Speaker 02

  Yeah, it would just.

• 11:20Theo Von?

And that's not gonna age well.

• 11:24Theo Von?

But in Scotland, it's just a bit more like, whose tit is this, you know, kind of? And it's on your mate half the time.

• 11:30Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah, and a man's tit as well. It's always a man's tit.

• 11:33Theo Von?

  We're talking about men, ladies.

• 11:35Speaker 02

Yeah, we're talking about men's tits.

• 11:37Theo Von?

Relax. It's not always about your tits.

• 11:41Theo Von?

You know, like some of us are wearing brassieres now. They have that Shay Gilgus Alexander just had a brassiere on the other day. One of the most famous basketball players in the United States.

• 11:50Speaker 02

Oh, really? Is that a thing that I can?

• 11:52Theo Von?

Pull up a gander at this. He was wearing a men's brassiere.

• 11:56Speaker 02

  Oh, what?

• 11:58Speaker 02

Lovely stuff. Is that like, what is the?

• 12:01Theo Von?

But yeah, beautiful. I mean, it's coming, I guess things are.

• 12:03Speaker 02

What is the, what is the, the use in that? Cause he doesn't look like he's packing heat.

• 12:08Theo Von?

I mean, I bet, I haven't seen, this is as much of him as I've seen.

• 12:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:12Theo Von?

I'm gonna just, you know, based on charts I've seen online, I bet he's doing okay.

• 12:15Speaker 02

  Yeah, for sure. Yeah.

• 12:17Theo Von?

I think, uh, yeah, I don't know. I think maybe times are changing. I don't know.

• 12:22Speaker 02

Yeah, it looks, I mean, hey, fair play to him.

• 12:24Theo Von?

  Yeah, fair play.

• 12:25Speaker 02

Fair play. That's what I, that's what I always say.

• 12:27Theo Von?

Fair play to these Brazilians men.

• 12:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:31Theo Von?

That's what I say. Um, are you feeling okay?

• 12:34Speaker 02

  Yeah, I feel great.

• 12:35Theo Von?

  You're doing good?

• 12:35Speaker 02

Yeah, I feel relaxed and chilled.

• 12:37Theo Von?

  Good, man.

• 12:38Speaker 02

  What is Celsius?

• 12:40Theo Von?

So Celsius is our sponsor and this is, I mean, this will definitely, it, it just gets you kind of going, you know?

• 12:48Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. I'm gonna have a sip.

• 12:50Theo Von?

  Yeah, get in there.

• 12:52Speaker 02

I've never, I've never tried it before.

• 12:53Theo Von?

  You haven't?

• 12:56Speaker 02

That's lovely. That is actually really nice. Celsius.

• 13:00Theo Von?

I'll have a bit with you.

• 13:01Speaker 02

  Yeah, cheers.

• 13:01Theo Von?

  Cheers, lad.

• 13:02Speaker 02

  Cheers.

• 13:03Theo Von?

  Sir.

• 13:03Speaker 02

  A word for my sponsors.

• 13:05Theo Von?

  There you.

• 13:05Speaker 02

  There you are.

• 13:08Speaker 02

  Oh, man.

• 13:09Theo Von?

Yeah, this dude, you have a couple of these. You'll see a couple UFOs.

• 13:12Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, for sure. Yeah. I always thought it was alcoholic. Can you get alcoholic Celsius or no?

• 13:17Theo Von?

It's a great question. Do they have that? No.

• 13:18Speaker 02

They should really, they should really wade into that market. That'd be a good, that'd be a good shift.

• 13:24Theo Von?

Yeah, I bet at some point they will. I mean, you're gonna get an email immediately for alcoholics. You're gonna have, you're gonna get a collab.

• 13:30Speaker 02

Yeah, great. I mean, that's what I'm, that's what I'm angling for. I'm here collecting sponsors. Yeah.

• 13:36Theo Von?

Um, dude, in Scotland, you guys see some of the most UFOs. Do you know that?

• 13:39Speaker 02

I didn't know that. No, no, no. I'm not, I'm not as up to speed with my alien stuff as I should be, but is that, is that the case more?

• 13:48Theo Von?

Yes, I think Scotland is one of the most, I think Scotland has some of the most UFO sightings anywhere.

• 13:54Speaker 02

Really? I think there's, there's also like, I think that's also got something to do with people like, you know, taking more drugs in Scotland.

• 14:01Theo Von?

Oh, definitely. And then some people just need a ride home.

• 14:04Speaker 02

  Exactly, just jumping.

• 14:05Theo Von?

Hoping anything will come get them.

• 14:06Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, exactly.

• 14:07Theo Von?

What's that? There was a video of a guy, one of the first sightings over there, what was his name? Yeah, this is a guy right here.

• 14:16Theo Von?

  It's Bobby Taylor.

• 14:17Speaker 04

They with a big round dome, a very dark grey colour and had a, a big flange going all the way around. I could see arms sticking out of this flange with what I took to be blades on the top. As I stood here, there was two balls came out, two balls. I think they'd be about three feet in diameter with about six.

• 14:46Theo Von?

It could have just been a, it could have just a big gay guy running towards him. You know what I'm saying? It could have just been a big gay guy in a helmet running towards him.

• 14:55Speaker 02

He also sounds like he might have a few on board though. Do you know what I mean? It's not like Robert, Bobby Taylor there, sounds like he could be under the influence slightly. So I'm not sure that that's like.

• 15:04Theo Von?

No, I'm glad you're here because this is.

• 15:05Speaker 02

Livingston, that's so close to where I grew up.

• 15:07Theo Von?

  Really?

• 15:07Speaker 02

Yeah, so close to where I grew up. I grew up like. Ten minutes from there.

• 15:11Theo Von?

  Oh, wow. That's very close.

• 15:12Speaker 02

Place called East Whitburn, in between Glasgow and Edinburgh, but that's so close to where I live.

• 15:16Theo Von?

And have you heard of this man?

• 15:17Speaker 02

I've never heard of Robert Taylor. He hasn't, hasn't really made it into the.

• 15:22Theo Von?

He was attacked by a UFO in the Deck, in the Deck.

• 15:25Speaker 02

  Detmunt, Detmunt Woods.

• 15:26Theo Von?

  You've heard of him?

• 15:27Speaker 02

I haven't heard of, I've heard of the Woods. I haven't heard of Robert, but then that's what they do. They try and, they try and suppress this stuff, don't they?

• 15:36Theo Von?

Oh, for sure. You can, yeah, this guy should not be.

• 15:39Speaker 02

Yeah. West Loughian, that's where, that's literally where I grew up.

• 15:41Theo Von?

  Really?

• 15:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:43Theo Von?

In UF, the, the Taylor incident, AKA Livingston incident, or Detmunt Woods encounter is the name given to claims of sight, sighting an extraterrestrial spacecraft in Livingston, West Loughian.

• 15:54Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 15:55Theo Von?

Yeah, that's where Whitburn is, eh?

• 15:56Speaker 02

I never thought I'd hear Theo Von say West Loughian.

• 15:59Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah, boy.

• 16:02Speaker 02

WL, Whitburn Lupi. That's another thing.

• 16:04Theo Von?

Yeah, well, Whitburn Lupi is like a, a young team. There's a thing in Scotland called, there's things all over Scotland called young teams.

• 16:11Speaker 02

And it's like groups of youths are, are like, and they sort of get together and cause mischief and like, you know, I don't know, like fighting.

• 16:20Theo Von?

  Oh, a bit of gangs?

• 16:21Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. So I wouldn't even class it as gangs. It's not as like, it's not as.

• 16:25Theo Von?

  Violent?

• 16:26Speaker 02

Violent. There's fights, but like everyone, you kind of go around on your bikes and like punch, punch fuck at each. I was never in one, obviously, but like punch fuck at each other. We had like. West Whitburn Lupi, that's the only one I know.

• 16:39Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 16:39Speaker 02

It was a song like Whitburn Lupi, nuts are we? Him and her and you and me, we'll show you what we can do with a baseball bat and a snooker cue. Slash the faces, jump the back, use the cue as a baseball bat. Whitburn Lupi, nuts are we? We are the Whitburn Lupi.

• 16:54Theo Von?

Let's go, dude. I'll join right now. Get somebody that fricking Glasgow smile, eh? Wow. According to Taylor, a forestry worker for the Livingston Development Corporation on November 9th, 1979, he parked his pickup truck at the side of a road near the motorway and walked along a forest path. He claims he experienced a foul odor like burning brakes.

• 17:17Speaker 02

I mean, it sounds pretty similar. The spheres, like similar to sea mines, had seized him and were dragging him in the direction of a larger object when he lost consciousness.

• 17:26Theo Von?

  Ooh.

• 17:28Speaker 02

They all, but they always lose consciousness right before they see them.

• 17:31Theo Von?

  It is true.

• 17:31Speaker 02

Do you know what I mean? So what is, what is happening?

• 17:34Theo Von?

Yeah, it sounds like he blacked out. I mean, anything, yeah. I mean, he definitely, you said out of the gate, it looked like he'd maybe had one or two.

• 17:40Speaker 02

Yeah, one or two on board. Yeah.

• 17:42Theo Von?

And also the thing about a lot of UFOs, dude, you never, we never even, we never even find a gas cap on the ground or anything. Like, these motherfuckers are flying everywhere. We never find a rear view mirror from one of them.

• 17:56Speaker 02

  Yeah, exactly. Yeah, exactly.

• 17:56Theo Von?

You're telling me they're that well assembled, that not one of them ever?

• 17:59Speaker 02

  Has had the fault.

• 18:00Theo Von?

Yes. A spare tire or something, even just one of those jacks they use to fix the side of it?

• 18:05Speaker 02

I'm not like a huge believer in UFOs or aliens, but I'm curious.

• 18:12Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 18:13Speaker 02

  I'm curious.

• 18:14Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 18:14Speaker 02

  Yeah, I'm always interested.

• 18:16Theo Von?

You're alien curious, they call you.

• 18:17Speaker 02

  I'm alien curious. Yeah.

• 18:18Theo Von?

Me too. I would just be, oh, I hope if they get me, they're women that get me. But yeah, the Falkirk, what was that? The Falkirk Triangle?

• 18:27Speaker 02

Falkirk Triangle. Falkirk's also not far from where I live. This is all, they obviously would be happening in my sort of, my little concentrated area of London. Yeah, Scotland, sorry.

• 18:37Theo Von?

Yeah, the Falkirk Triangle. It sounds like three kind of thicker ladies splitting a bit of haggis, doesn't it?

• 18:43Speaker 02

  Yeah, it does. Yeah.

• 18:45Theo Von?

Yeah, the Falkirk Triangle is a region in central Scotland renowned as one of the world's most active UFO hotspots. You didn't know that?

• 18:51Speaker 02

I didn't know that. No, that's not, people haven't like, that's not become.

• 18:56Theo Von?

  What the shit?

• 18:56Speaker 02

Yeah, exactly. Yeah, it's not become a real. It's not as famous as.

• 19:00Theo Von?

But how many do you need before people tap each other on the shoulder?

• 19:03Speaker 02

You say, yeah, things are going on here. This isn't like, this isn't normal. You think as well, you'd be able to catch them. Like you'd be able, three hundred are happening a year in the area. You'd be able to wait out and be like, okay, they're coming at some point. Do you know what I mean?

• 19:16Theo Von?

Yeah, you think just some guy, some Scottish cowboy with a lasso.

• 19:18Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's mad though. I never knew that.

• 19:22Theo Von?

What is it? I wonder if, what leads to those UFO? I wonder if there's something in Scotland that leads to it. Is it the diet? Is it the?

• 19:29Speaker 02

There was a, there was a thing called the Glasgow effect a couple of years ago. Well, I still, I think it was like the life expectancy in Glasgow at one stage was like 55 years old or whatever. And I remember this girl did like this thing where she was looking, it was like an art project. But she was looking for funding so she could live like a Glaswegian for a year and see how it affected her health.

• 19:56Theo Von?

So she could love a Glaswegian?

• 19:58Speaker 02

No, live, live like a Glaswegian, like.

• 19:59Theo Von?

  Live.

• 20:00Speaker 02

The diet, the, the sort of surroundings of that. People were really up in arms about it because it was very like sort of poverty safari sort of.

• 20:07Theo Von?

Right. Like almost like a supersize me, but for Scotland.

• 20:10Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was very like, it was, but yeah, excess. The Glasgow effect refers to the observation, residents of Glasgow experience lower life expectancy and poorer health outcomes than people living in similarly deprived cities in the United Kingdom. There you go. But I don't, I think it's better now. I think it is much better now.

• 20:25Theo Von?

I think the people are just so great. God wants them back quicker.

• 20:28Speaker 02

That's great. That's a good way of looking at it.

• 20:30Theo Von?

That's what I feel like. The rest of you guys can mill around on the earth.

• 20:34Speaker 02

Yeah, just keep it, keep it going down there. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 20:36Theo Von?

Dude, the last 30 years are downhill anyway. We'll fucking show up in heaven in style. I like that. That's class, dude.

• 20:43Speaker 02

  How old are you?

• 20:44Theo Von?

I'm 45, man. Yeah, I'm gonna die soon, dude. Let me get a look at myself.

• 20:48Speaker 02

  I think you're very, very sprightly 45.

• 20:51Theo Von?

  You know, I don't feel, I swear to God, I don't, I don't, if this is what 45 feels like, I can't even believe it. Cause I don't feel 45. I don't even, I don't think I think like I'm 45.

• 21:02Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 21:03Theo Von?

So I think something's wrong with me.

• 21:06Theo Von?

And I'm not even joking. I really do. I thought I would just have more like adult feelings or be a young grandfather at this point, but none of that's happening.

• 21:14Speaker 02

Yeah, of course. I definitely get the older I get, the more I'm like aging kind of scares me slightly. Not even not even aging, getting older, but like the loss of like youth.

• 21:25Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 21:25Speaker 02

Even though like things have gone, I've like done been really lucky and like had like a really like dreams have come true and stuff. I still like find myself paining and longing for like when I was younger and even like, I don't know why. It's like a big thing for me. It's this.

• 21:43Theo Von?

  Same.

• 21:44Speaker 02

Like I'm running out of time sort of thing. But I think that everyone gets that.

• 21:47Theo Von?

I don't know. I don't know if some people get it so severely because I think about that all the time. Like youth, like I'm like almost obsessed with what it was like to be young, you know?

• 21:55Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 21:56Theo Von?

And almost, I think a lot of times I don't want to grow up.

• 21:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, of course.

• 22:00Theo Von?

At any, I don't ever want to do it.

• 22:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:02Theo Von?

  You know?

• 22:03Speaker 02

  Totally.

• 22:03Theo Von?

Like, uh, but yeah, I think, I guess, I think one thing about youth is that everything was like so adventurous, maybe, or I don't know. Why do you think that is? What do you, do you think there's like?

• 22:16Speaker 02

  I don't know. I don't know if it's like.

• 22:18Theo Von?

Any themes about youth that make you feel that way?

• 22:20Speaker 02

I guess there's people, like there's people around you that are, that aren't here anymore. I guess that it's a point in your life where everyone is, like everyone's there. I mean, I guess my grandmother died when I was three. So I was very quick to, I think that may be a big thing with my worry of like my, what's the word, obsession with like, you know, youth and aging and all the rest of it.

• 22:45Theo Von?

  Detachment and all that?

• 22:46Speaker 02

Yeah, because I, I learned from like a young age that people, it's finite and people die and stuff. And I think, um, yeah, I think maybe that might be something that I attach to or like that there's, there's less, there's less, um.

• 23:00Theo Von?

Was she a cool lady, your grand?

• 23:02Speaker 02

  Yeah, she was cool. Uh.

• 23:03Theo Von?

  What's her name?

• 23:04Speaker 02

  Uh, I don't know.

• 23:08Speaker 03

  My mom's gonna kill me.

• 23:10Theo Von?

No, she won't. Your grandmother's dead. They need you.

• 23:13Speaker 03

Fuck, what was my grand's name? I was called a Nana.

• 23:17Theo Von?

That's fair. And if she, first of all.

• 23:20Speaker 03

Can I text my mom and ask her what her name was?

• 23:22Theo Von?

Please. Any, any grandmother going by her natural born name, first of all, is a tramp.

• 23:30Theo Von?

Every grandmother should be Nana from now on.

• 23:33Speaker 03

I want to text my brother because I feel like my mom would be like, what the fuck are you doing?

• 23:36Theo Von?

It might be much for her.

• 23:38Speaker 03

  What was mum's mum's name?

• 23:42Theo Von?

Two more sips of Celsius, you'll remember it.

• 23:44Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 23:44Theo Von?

I bet if you have a sip of Celsius right now, you might remember it.

• 23:47Speaker 03

Can't fucking remember her name. That's mental.

• 23:50Theo Von?

But yeah, you've been through a lot, dude. We've seen.

• 23:52Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Exactly. Yeah, yeah. That's fucking mental.

• 23:56Theo Von?

  Ah, is it though?

• 23:56Speaker 03

I'll keep it. I'll keep it.

• 23:58Theo Von?

  I'll tell you this. I don't know my father's mother's name.

• 24:01Speaker 03

Oh, but there you go. But you, you, your father was much older.

• 24:05Theo Von?

Yeah, he's an older man. Yeah, my grandmother was born in eighteen eighty-four.

• 24:09Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 24:10Theo Von?

But I should still probably know her first name.

• 24:14Speaker 03

But I guess you never, you never met her.

• 24:16Theo Von?

  No, I never met her.

• 24:16Speaker 03

  But she's born in eighteen eighty-four, that's.

• 24:18Theo Von?

No, I've seen some drawing. We had drawings of her and stuff at our house, but I, uh, yeah, I never met her.

• 24:23Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:23Theo Von?

But we had four pretty good drawings. One actually, one my uncle did and it was fucking shite, dude.

• 24:29Speaker 03

Yeah, it was shite. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 24:30Theo Von?

Oh, it was horrible. It was with markers.

• 24:32Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah, of course. Yeah, yeah. It's a no photos, just drawings.

• 24:35Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 24:36Speaker 03

From, and from memory maybe. So who knows? It could have been anyone, really. Could have been an old lady.

• 24:44Speaker 03

  So, so you don't, uh.

• 24:45Theo Von?

Yeah, it could have been just some friend of Paddington Bears. I have no clue who it was. It could have been anyone.

• 24:50Speaker 03

The Queen. Do you know what I mean?

• 24:52Theo Von?

Oh, yeah. It could have been the Queen. I'm like, damn, grandma had a scepter. It's pretty crazy.

• 24:59Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 25:01Theo Von?

Pickles have always been treated like they were an extra, like they didn't matter, like no one cared about them or remembered that they existed. Yeah. That's how people treat pickles, like a complete and total afterthought. So Sonic Drive-In made pickles a before thought and a during thought. Introducing the Sonic Big Dill Meal. • 27:07Theo Von?

filled with pickle bursting bubbles. Sonic has unleashed the pickle with the Big Dill Meal. Pickles aren't just a topping with this meal, they're the whole meal. The Sonic and Grillo's Big Dill Meal. Live free, eat Sonic.

• 27:24Speaker 02

So we'll get back to that my mother's, my mother's, mother's name.

• 27:27Theo Von?

And look, it'll be something that we'll try, we'll check towards the end.

• 27:29Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 27:30Theo Von?

But Nan is, Nan is, that's what everybody calls them.

• 27:33Speaker 02

  Nana, Nana.

• 27:33Theo Von?

  Nana.

• 27:34Speaker 02

Nana. It's like, I thought it's a Scottish thing or like, no, I think some Americans say Nana.

• 27:39Theo Von?

Yeah, I'm trying to think what we say here. A lot of people say like Grammy, Mimi.

• 27:44Speaker 02

  Memaw.

• 27:44Theo Von?

  Memaw too.

• 27:45Speaker 02

Memaw, yeah, yeah. What would you, what would you?

• 27:48Theo Von?

Grandmother, evil grandmother, I would say also at times.

• 27:53Theo Von?

  Or distant grandmother.

• 27:57Speaker 02

  Cold grandmother.

• 27:58Theo Von?

  Older lady with the key.

• 28:01Theo Von?

Is also a term that I would throw around sometimes. No, my grandma, yeah, she was, my grandmother was good at like, she would make us nice treats.

• 28:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:11Theo Von?

And that was one thing I do that thought that she was good at.

• 28:13Speaker 02

  Fond memories, treats.

• 28:15Theo Von?

She liked to feed you, you know?

• 28:16Speaker 02

Yeah, I've, listen, I've got a lot of people like that in my life.

• 28:19Theo Von?

  Yeah?

• 28:19Speaker 02

Yeah, I'm a, I'm a big, I'm a big proponent of being fed. I like to be fed.

• 28:24Theo Von?

  Yeah, look.

• 28:25Speaker 02

Yeah, it sounds weirder than I wanted to think, but I just meant I like, I like eating.

• 28:30Theo Von?

Well, of course, you should eat while you're here. I mean, according to the Scottish mortality rate, you're fucking.

• 28:34Speaker 02

There's only so much time left. Exactly. I think go on, I think 55.

• 28:38Theo Von?

You feel so much about your youth, you know? No wonder you do.

• 28:41Speaker 02

I think my brother's text me back.

• 28:42Theo Von?

  All right.

• 28:43Speaker 02

  Let me see.

• 28:47Speaker 02

  What?

• 28:49Speaker 02

Mum's mum's name was Melissa. It wasn't Melissa. No, no grandmother's ever been called Melissa.

• 28:54Theo Von?

  Not that I know of.

• 28:55Speaker 02

  No.

• 28:56Theo Von?

Unless it's like, kind of like a, um.

• 28:59Speaker 02

  No, Margaret.

• 29:01Theo Von?

  Melissa.

• 29:02Speaker 02

Maggie? I guess we'll get to the bottom of this by, by the end of the podcast. I'm a hundred percent.

• 29:07Theo Von?

  This is our UFO.

• 29:09Speaker 02

Yeah, this is meant, I'll just keep it, um, sorry.

• 29:12Theo Von?

No, I think it's great, man. Um, yeah, dude, who's on, who's on your Scottish Mount Rushmore? If you had to kind of piece one together?

• 29:20Speaker 02

Billy Connolly would be up there for sure.

• 29:21Theo Von?

  Okay, Billy Connolly?

• 29:23Speaker 02

  Yeah, Billy Connolly, um, maybe.

• 29:27Speaker 02

Like, there's a Scottish singer I love called Paolo Nattini.

• 29:30Theo Von?

  What is his name?

• 29:31Speaker 02

Paolo Nattini, he's Scottish Italian, much like myself. Well, not quite like myself because he looks Italian and I look like this. Yeah. See, he's got that sort of like Italian air.

• 29:41Theo Von?

  Wow, I didn't know that. So that's a Scotsman?

• 29:45Speaker 02

  That's a Scotsman, yeah.

• 29:46Theo Von?

  Oh.

• 29:47Speaker 02

And yeah, but he, he's up there for me as a, as a musician. I'm such a, grew up listening to him.

• 29:52Theo Von?

And have you guys ever gotten to tour or collaborate together?

• 29:55Speaker 02

We've, I've had a few beers with him. I went, I've been to see him and had a few beers with him. That was like a really nice sort of philosophical. He's very elusive, eh, part in he'll like disappear for years and then come back and sing. But he's, eh, he's incredible, credible talent, but he'll be, he'd be up there for me. Um, I'm trying to think of actors.

• 30:13Theo Von?

Oh, uh, I guess Sean Connery, maybe?

• 30:16Speaker 02

Sean Connery would be up there.

• 30:17Theo Von?

  I mean, he's a very historical figure.

• 30:19Speaker 02

Yeah, Sean Connery probably would be up there, yeah, actor wise.

• 30:22Theo Von?

What about Shane McGowan? Was he Scottish?

• 30:23Speaker 02

  Shane McGowan's Irish.

• 30:24Theo Von?

  He is?

• 30:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:25Theo Von?

He might've been high enough. He thought he was Scottish.

• 30:27Speaker 02

Oh, no, he's, yeah, I think he was born in England, Shane McGowan.

• 30:31Speaker 02

  I don't know, but I think.

• 30:32Theo Von?

Sean Connery is, he was very much the epitome of class, I think, for a bit. Robert Louis Stevenson, that, uh.

• 30:40Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, or like Alexander Graham Bell.

• 30:42Theo Von?

  Is he Scottish?

• 30:43Speaker 02

Yeah, I think he's Scottish. Scottish people invented telephone and television. John Logie Baird, is that the guy who invented the television?

• 30:53Theo Von?

Well, Robert Louis Stevenson, they, they invented the telephone? Who invented the telephone, really? Oh my gosh, dude, thank you.

• 31:00Speaker 02

Yeah, don't worry, guy. Honestly, thank you. You're more than welcome. That, that's quite a recent, looks like a quite recent picture. What's going on there? It must be AI or something.

• 31:08Theo Von?

Nah, they said, what do you mean? Do you think that's AI?

• 31:11Speaker 02

I don't know. It's just been colored. It's just been, um.

• 31:14Theo Von?

Dude, he, you guys invented the damn telephone?

• 31:16Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 31:17Theo Von?

  Who did he call first?

• 31:18Speaker 02

I don't know. There was no one else on, on the other end of the line, I guess. That's the problem.

• 31:21Theo Von?

That's a great point. Oh, Christ, that must've been the worst part. Imagine the day they're like debuting it and nobody else even has one.

• 31:27Speaker 02

Exactly, rubbish. It must've been the guy who got the first iPhone, do you know what I mean?

• 31:31Theo Von?

Always like, oh, my wife didn't pick up. I'm gonna stay for another party.

• 31:36Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's mad.

• 31:37Theo Von?

Alexander Graham Bell's first telephone call was to his assistant, Thomas A. Watson. Bell uttered the famous words, Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you. Wow.

• 31:47Speaker 02

  Sexual.

• 31:49Theo Von?

Definitely. Well, look, disco, a lot of men invented things. I think a lot of men who allegedly had maybe some zesty tendencies invented things because they had, they needed to meet other men.

• 32:01Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 32:02Theo Von?

And they didn't want to say out in public, hey.

• 32:04Speaker 02

Yeah, exactly. You needed to, you wanted to be like discreet.

• 32:07Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 32:07Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 32:08Theo Von?

So pick up this little whisper mobile, that little phone.

• 32:11Speaker 02

  Come Heather, come Heather machine.

• 32:14Theo Von?

Yeah, the come Heather machine. Wow, that's wild, dude.

• 32:18Speaker 02

  That's lovely.

• 32:19Theo Von?

That's amazing. Yeah, I didn't know that. It's, uh, and that was March 10th, 1876. He did it in Boston.

• 32:24Speaker 02

Not long before your, um, grandmother was born.

• 32:27Theo Von?

  That's true.

• 32:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 32:28Theo Von?

  Oh.

• 32:29Speaker 02

It's all coming around now, isn't it?

• 32:30Theo Von?

  R I P Melissa.

• 32:32Speaker 02

Melissa. Oh, he's texting me. Sorry, I'm really, I, it's really rude that I'm pulling my phone out as much as I am.

• 32:36Theo Von?

No, what do you mean? We have to know.

• 32:39Speaker 02

  Oh, mum's mum, Margaret.

• 32:41Theo Von?

  Oh, Margaret.

• 32:42Speaker 02

Yeah, Margaret. I knew it was Margaret. I would have said that. Maggie. Margaret. Yeah, there you go. Margaret.

• 32:48Theo Von?

  Wake up Maggie.

• 32:49Speaker 02

Think I got something to say to you. Oh, I don't know what I'm singing on this podcast so far. I'm really enjoying it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm really, really taking it in. He's also a fan of Glasgow Celtic.

• 33:00Theo Von?

  Is he really?

• 33:01Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 33:01Theo Von?

  Who, um?

• 33:02Speaker 02

  Rod Stewart.

• 33:03Theo Von?

  Oh, Rod Stewart.

• 33:04Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 33:05Theo Von?

  He passed away, um?

• 33:06Speaker 02

  No, he's alive and well.

• 33:07Theo Von?

Oh, good. People said he passed. I'm glad he's doing good. No, it's.

• 33:13Speaker 02

Yeah, I think so. I think he just played, I think he just played Glastonbury like last week or something.

• 33:16Theo Von?

I was gonna be, uh, I was gonna be disappointed for a bit.

• 33:19Speaker 02

It was like, God, he's alive.

• 33:21Theo Von?

  Yes.

• 33:21Speaker 02

  Yeah, if you're watching, Rod.

• 33:23Theo Von?

Yeah. Um, you mentioned Glastonbury a few minutes ago. You just returned, huh?

• 33:27Speaker 02

I just got back. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just got, um, just came back on stage, a bit of a comeback moment thing. Yeah, it was lovely. It was like a really special, special moment. I didn't, um, two years ago, I basically had like this.

• 33:40Speaker 02

I don't want to call it like a mental breakdown, but it was like a breakdown of sorts onstage that had been a long time coming, to be honest, onstage at that Glastonbury in 2023. And then I took two years off to sort of like recalibrate and re sort of, you know, did a lot of therapy and got myself in a much better headspace and dealt with, I had been told I had Tourette's and stuff and that was really causing me a lot of stress and I didn't know how to deal with it. And now, yeah, after these two years off, I really wanted to come back and, you know, do Glastonbury and sort of like as a like a mental sort of win, sort of finish the thing that I couldn't finish before. And it was amazing. Yeah, like really, really, maybe like the best day of my life, to be honest.

• 34:21Speaker 02

It was a really, really special moment and I'm just, yeah, I'm really glad that we got to do it. And like, it was just, yeah, blew my mind a bit, mad, mad, mad, mad.

• 34:31Theo Von?

Yeah, I mean, I've seen the videos, it looks, you can feel the energy in both, in both of the the, the, the performances I've seen on YouTube, you can feel the energy in both of them. Was part of you like glad, like, you know, there's this weird, like, because you're very transparent, I feel like with your audience, I feel like as much as you can be, and I think as a human, right? You try to put yourself out there as, as well as you know yourself. And that's how you try to present yourself.

• 35:02Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 35:02Theo Von?

And of course, we're always like getting to know ourselves more, right? And so that will change over time. Were you, were you glad almost in a weird way that some of that kind of like, I don't want to call it a breakdown, but some of like that, like that, that reel of a moment in your life? Was there a little bit of you that was glad or were you scared that it happened in such a public way? Does that make any sense?

• 35:27Speaker 02

No, no, it makes complete sense and I was, I was so happy, like when I came off stage, like when it happened and when it was happening, I was, it was like the lowest moment of my life and it was horrible. But like I made this, I had this moment where I was onstage, like two, three songs in, I was like, this is the last time I'm going to play a gig for a long time. I was, I need to try and get through the rest of the show, but when I come off, I'm done. So when I got offstage, it was obviously, again, horrible on, at the moment onstage and, you know, experiencing it all, whatever, but. Excuse me, I, when I got off stage, everyone else around me was a bit like, oh, this is the worst thing ever. And I had this weird sort of, a weight had been lifted of like, oh, now this

• 36:11Speaker 02

thing's happened and I have to get help, sort of thing. It wasn't, I had been putting it off. Because funnily enough, a few weeks prior to that show in Glastonbury, we were playing in Chicago, and I had a very similar episode, but it was probably even worse, the one in Chicago. I couldn't come back on stage and finish the song. I was like backstage convulsing and having like this crazy panic attack, mental like episode. It was really, really bad, way worse than what happened to Glastonbury. But because Glastonbury is such a, like you say, like a big stage and a big moment, it was the first time people outside of maybe, you know, my shows or whatever had seen it. So, yeah, at Glastonbury, when I came off stage, it was

• 36:54Speaker 02

weird. I had this, oh, everything's all right now and I can actually go and get help and fix myself for these, for the next two years. And it was, yeah, in a weird way, it's probably the best thing that ever happened to me, that, that moment at Glastonbury in 2023, because it was just, I wouldn't have stopped otherwise. If I had, if I could like think, I'm really bad for, I'm, I'll say, I'll say I am really bad. I was really bad for not saying no to things. Yeah. Like feeling like, oh, this is going to pass me by if I don't say yes to this. All this amazing stuff's coming at me now and I have to like catch it all and sort of get it all done and, and, and do this. Otherwise, these moments are going to pass me by and I'm, you know, it's

• 37:38Speaker 02

never going to happen again. So I said yes to way too much and I took way too much on and everyone around me was like, was asking me, are you sure this is okay? Should I say, I was like, yeah, I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine. But yeah, so Glastonbury 2023 was for sure the biggest like, was yeah, really important. And like my, yeah, maybe the most important day of my life to be honest, because it was such a.

• 38:04Speaker 02

Yeah, I wouldn't have stopped otherwise. Do you know what I mean? It was like, almost like.

• 38:07Theo Von?

  Like a blessing, kinda?

• 38:08Speaker 02

Yeah, it's like someone upstairs was like, this has to happen now, otherwise. I don't want to think about where I would be now if I hadn't.

• 38:15Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 38:15Speaker 02

If I'd continued to do it, because we were meant to go to Australia and stuff like that.

• 38:17Theo Von?

And you could have fallen apart, man.

• 38:19Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, exactly. It could have been really, really, yeah, horrible. I dread to think.

• 38:24Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 38:24Speaker 02

What would have happened otherwise, do you know what I mean? So, and yeah, a bit of a blessing in disguise, I think.

• 38:29Theo Von?

And I, you know what I thought about, I like, um, I felt like it was just like, I think we're at a time where people just want to see something that's real.

• 38:38Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.

• 38:38Theo Von?

You know, they want to see somebody that's like, you know, that's not hiding all their tough times, you know? That's trying to at least be earnest, as earnest as you can, you know?

• 38:51Theo Von?

So, yeah, I just thought it was, um, yeah, I don't know.

• 38:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:55Theo Von?

I think seeing something that's real.

• 38:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:57Theo Von?

And especially if it's somebody like you that is, you know, you're an emotional guy, you have a lot of feelings and it's,

• 39:03Speaker 02

  Yes, yeah.

• 39:03Theo Von?

And you have a lot of feelings that we all have that we can't put into words. And so, you know, we like, look to you to be like this, like, you know, almost somebody that's like, uh, speaking for us. Not that you're doing that through ego or anything.

• 39:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:16Theo Von?

But just that you're like a conduit for some of the feelings that we can't explain.

• 39:19Speaker 02

Yeah, maybe, I think so. But then I look to like, other people like that.

• 39:22Theo Von?

Oh, for sure. I think we all do. But just the fact that then you are able to like, just that you're so present and real, it feels like with your, with, with people and with your fans or, you know, people that support you.

• 39:35Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 39:35Theo Von?

That for you to have a real moment, it just, um, I don't know, I guess, I don't know exactly what I'm trying to say. I guess.

• 39:44Theo Von?

  Shit, I'm an idiot.

• 39:47Speaker 02

I know what you mean. It's like, people are sort of craving a bit of like authenticity, I think.

• 39:52Theo Von?

Well, and also if you hadn't had it in such a real way, would you, um,

• 39:57Speaker 02

Well, that's the thing. I think for a long time I was like.

• 40:03Theo Von?

  I'm sorry.

• 40:04Speaker 02

No, you're grand, you're grand. It was, I think for a long time I was like surface level, talking about my mental health and talking about, I think for a long time prior to that moment in 2003, I was like, yeah, I get, I have panic attacks or I get anxious, but I wasn't like really, I feel that, and I still am bad for this now, like I give people enough that sometimes they think they're getting the whole story and actually I'm holding quite a lot back sometimes. And I think I was doing that quite heavily at the time. So when that happened at Glastonbury, it was this real thing of like, the, the sort of things been, the mask been pulled off and it's like, yeah, you're just there in, in front of everybody. So, yeah, as I say, it was like this, you, I didn't, I have had no

• 40:49Speaker 02

choice but to confront things. And I think, yeah, I was really taken aback by the sort of outpouring of love and support that people had shared. It was really like, like an emotional time, like coming back and seeing like so many people reaching out and being, you know, kind and sort of sharing their stories with me and all this stuff. It was, it was really special. But yeah, I, I know what you mean. Like, I feel like everybody's looking for something that's a bit real or tangible to sort of hold on to, I think.

• 41:19Theo Von?

  Something that's human, yeah.

• 41:20Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, a hundred percent.

• 41:21Theo Von?

Did you feel any embarrassment when you came back? And not that you should or anything? I just think that feelings are interesting, right? So sometimes you'll feel embarrassed about things, even if you should, you know, it's all interesting. Like we show up to everything with different feelings and trying to, you're always trying to juggle all these feelings in all these moments, you know? Was there any embarrassment?

• 41:39Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, I feel, I feel embarrassment all the time. Honestly, like, I don't know if, I don't know if you agree with this, right? But like, see, being like famous, I find it's the most embarrassing thing of all time. Or like well-known, like I walk into every room and I'm like, either, you're either not famous enough or too famous to be in a room. I know that sounds like very first world problems, but let me land here. But that's like, that's like thing of like, I either walk into a room and it's like, again, I'm totally projecting and no one's probably even looking at me like this, but like, I sometimes feel like either it's like everyone thinks that I think that I'm awesome, awesome. And I'm walking in a room and I'm like, look at me, I'm this famous guy and blah, blah, blah. Or people.

• 42:23Speaker 02

Walk into the room and go, oh, who does he think he is doing this or that? I just feel fame in general and being well known is the most embarrassing thing to me. I just get like, I just feel so like cringed up all the time with like, when it comes to like that sort of side of things.

• 42:41Theo Von?

Yeah, it's the brightest, ugliest suit.

• 42:43Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. You're walking into a room and like, I don't know, it's, it's, it's mental. And then I sort of have this thing where I walk in a room and I assume that, oh, everyone in this room is probably doesn't like me because they've seen something online that I said once, or they think I try too hard to be silly or funny, or they think I try, my music's shit, or they think I think I'm better than I am, or I just.

• 43:04Theo Von?

Oh, yeah. Trying to manage people's expectations or thoughts?

• 43:07Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 43:08Theo Von?

Yeah. And then your whole life becomes, and I know some people are like, listen to these guys who have everything complaining, right? And I understand that, but we're going to keep doing it for another minute, right?

• 43:18Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 43:18Theo Von?

Just to explore what it's like, because also being popular, it's almost just like, life's like an experiment and you have different moments. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's horrible, but it's all just like, I look at it as like, okay, this is what's going on now and what is this like, you know? And, uh, yeah, sometimes then you start thinking, okay, I have to spend so much time making sure that everybody thinks that I'm okay.

• 43:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 43:41Theo Von?

Right? That I'm cool, that I'm okay enough to them.

• 43:44Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 43:44Theo Von?

So then that can be like a trap. It can all be just kind of like, um, I don't know. It can get a little bit interesting.

• 43:50Speaker 02

That's another thing as well, like that's, uh, like even like having that thought of like, fuck, is this, yeah, is this complaining too much or whatever, but like.

• 43:59Theo Von?

Oh, I'll text these guys in the middle of the night, does this seem gay? Does this seem racist?

• 44:04Theo Von?

Those are two of the big ones.

• 44:05Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 44:05Theo Von?

Am I okay? These motherfuckers are trying to sleep in their homes.

• 44:08Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.

• 44:09Theo Von?

And their coworkers texting me at midnight, am I okay? Like, we don't fucking know. Look, fucking look at your ring camera, you idiot.

• 44:17Speaker 02

But it's true. It's like this thing of like, even the thoughts of, even the thoughts of, even like the thing I just said, you're, I'm already like overthinking that thing I said about, you're either too famous or not famous enough in a room because I'm like, I'm embarrassed that I even, like even talking about being famous is embarrassing, or even like referring to yourself as being famous is embarrassing. Do you know what I mean? And again, you're only famous to people who know you really. You're not famous to ever like, like thingy. So it's like, and then, I don't know, it's such like a, mental, you do like so many mental gymnastics, I think, thinking about.

• 44:52Theo Von?

For sure. Oh, no. Look, man, it's interesting to talk about. And you know what I think? It's, it's interesting to imagine, um, that it's interesting to imagine that you're important, right?

• 45:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:03Theo Von?

That's an interesting thing. It's like that you're like, I, I've noticed this sometimes, like, if other people think I'm important, then it gives me, I don't have to think I'm important. Like, it's almost like I'm using the fact that they think I'm important in some way. It's like, oh, then I can just get my importance through that.

• 45:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:24Theo Von?

Instead of creating my own importance for myself. Does that make any sense? Or is that crazy?

• 45:28Speaker 02

No, a hundred percent. It's like you're getting, but then it's that sort of, again, I guess it goes back to like external validation.

• 45:34Theo Von?

  A hundred percent.

• 45:35Speaker 02

Which is like, I was thinking of this on the way over as well, how, um, how attack, like, cause I'm, I'm coming back into this, like, um, like.

• 45:45Theo Von?

Yeah. You have a new tour coming out. You're coming back into.

• 45:46Speaker 02

Yeah. This, what stepping into like spotlight again, or like this sort of world again. And I'm really trying not to get that validation externally, but it's quite difficult. Like, I'm just, I already feel it like in little bits of things that I've only been, uh, back for like a week and a half here. And I'm already like, you know, looking through comments and getting all like, excited when I see like a nice comment and then like really down when I see an awful one. And, and I'm, I'm trying to stop myself and be like, no, this is like. This is the stuff that you that got you sort of where you were last time. It's important to not.

• 46:24Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 46:24Speaker 02

You sort of feed into it and it's just, it's just really, yeah, it's like such an interesting thing. And I don't think it's exclusive to being well known or being.

• 46:32Theo Von?

No, I think a lot of it's human too.

• 46:33Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 46:34Theo Von?

A lot of it's just human stuff, you know? And I think this, you're almost like, I think with popularity and stuff, you almost become like a lab mouse. You almost become like just this heightened level of a lot of things. And so, um, you know, it's interesting to talk about. Well, dude, as a fan of yours and as a, you know, somebody you've helped me feel, you know, you know, no homo dude, have feelings and shit over the years type shit. Uh, but dude, yeah, I don't think you could ever, I think you'd have to try very hard. To, to have a realistic person think that you're a bad person, I think.

• 47:13Speaker 02

Thanks, man. Likewise, like, I think that's like, um, I think it's, that's why I think I'm such a fan of yours as well. Like, I just feel, and like talking about being real and stuff, I like, I've seen clips of yours where you're like, again, showing emotion and stuff and it really, it really resonates with me in a big way. So I feel like it's, yeah, it's just nice to like, yeah.

• 47:33Theo Von?

Check your phone, your grandmother texts me. Sorry, it's getting fucking kind of crazy, but no, I appreciate it, man. We're trying our best, you know? And it's, and sometimes it's a battle and yeah, I didn't mean to interrupt you. That was kind of mean of me, dude.

• 47:44Speaker 02

Wasn't mean at all. Honestly, I was rambling.

• 47:45Theo Von?

Um, do you worry? Uh, but thanks for the nice words, dude. Yeah, it all becomes, and then you start to become like, well, this, how people think you are. You're, is that how you really are? And then you're like, am I holding up just an image of myself? Who am I even? It's all kind of interesting, right? I think, but as long as you try to just stay aware of that, that's kind of what's going on. Then it can all be kind of interesting.

• 48:10Speaker 02

I think it's important to remind yourself who you are away from all this. I think that's what me having two years off.

• 48:14Theo Von?

I'm a pervert away from it.

• 48:17Theo Von?

You know what I'm saying? No offense ladies, I don't know. And no offense Scott either.

• 48:22Speaker 02

No, but I think it's important to have that sort of, yeah, that sort of awareness of, right, when, when all this is gone, like, who, what, who am I, or what am I?

• 48:33Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 48:34Speaker 02

You know, I have more, I think I have, I'd like to think I had more to offer than, you know, singing a few songs or, you know, being silly on, on social media or stuff like that.

• 48:43Theo Von?

Yeah, and more to offer myself, too.

• 48:44Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 48:45Theo Von?

That's what I think about sometimes, like, you know, at what point do I start offering, like, trying better to focus on offering things to my own life? I don't know. Now, now, now we might be wading into some fucking ego waters, but that's okay. Yeah, let's back out of that. Um, how do you keep things from being different than, like, what kind of, like, led to, like, some of the, uh, you know, like, mild traumas or things that happened last time that led you to the point where you were really suffering?

• 49:08Speaker 02

Yeah, I think for me, like, I wasn't doing any therapy. I wasn't really looking after myself at all. It's not like I'm, like, hitting the gym, like, every fucking day or whatever, like, whatever, but like, I just think in general, making better choices in terms of, um, you know, at every aspect of my life. I do therapy every week now as well, which has been really, um, beneficial for me. I think I've really, uh, that's really been maybe the biggest, biggest thing that's switched everything around.

• 49:35Theo Von?

Is your therapist a man or, or a woman?

• 49:37Speaker 02

A man, man named Owen. Owen O'Kane, very nice.

• 49:40Theo Von?

  Owen what?

• 49:40Speaker 02

  O'Kane.

• 49:41Theo Von?

  Owen O'Kane?

• 49:42Speaker 02

  Yeah, Irish.

• 49:43Theo Von?

  Oh.

• 49:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:44Theo Von?

  God.

• 49:47Theo Von?

So you'll end up decent if you get better?

• 49:48Speaker 02

  Yeah, exactly.

• 49:49Theo Von?

  At best.

• 49:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:51Theo Von?

Decent at best, dude. Oh, that's him there?

• 49:54Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, very good.

• 49:55Theo Von?

Is it okay that we say his name and stuff?

• 49:57Speaker 02

I think so, yeah. I'm sure he'll, I'm sure he'll be more than happy with it.

• 50:00Theo Von?

Oh, that's class. Oh, he's an author as well?

• 50:02Speaker 02

  Yeah, he's an author.

• 50:03Theo Von?

  Oh, that's amazing, man.

• 50:04Speaker 02

He's been amazing, he's been amazing for me in the last, uh, the last little while. It's just been, uh.

• 50:08Theo Von?

Who turned you on to him?

• 50:10Speaker 02

It was my management that, that got through to him and stuff, who had got heard from someone else or whatever, but I was just, when I came off stage at Glastonbury, it was like, immediately, first thing I needed is. Therapist and then we've.

• 50:21Theo Von?

Did they put you in an ice bath when you got off or what'd they do? Did they like just, or did you just fucking sit and have a pint and be like, that was a, that was a wild one. Like, were you able to calm down right after you came off the stage?

• 50:30Speaker 02

I went, I went out and I went, I flew back to Glasgow that night and went out and had pints.

• 50:36Theo Von?

That's the most Scottish shit I've ever heard, dude.

• 50:38Speaker 02

  I did, but yeah.

• 50:39Theo Von?

A guy could be getting a heart transplant.

• 50:43Speaker 02

Yeah, no, I woke up and I went straight to, straight to the pub and, and so it was just a nice, I just had to like go and do something normal rather than.

• 50:50Theo Von?

  For sure.

• 50:51Speaker 02

Being around mates and, and kept back at that sort of place. So, so yeah, went out and, kicked the ass out of it like properly, but it was, it was very much needed. Do you know what I mean? So, um, but, uh, yeah. And then it became, yeah. And then afterwards we did, yeah, a bunch of shit with therapists and neurologists as well for like my threats and stuff. I'm taking medication for that and, and all that stuff. And, uh, just in general, we try to reduce stress as much as possible. I think it's been a massive, a massive thing. And I think that's where that's sort of what I was saying about saying no to things is becoming quite a, I'm realizing how, um, uh, important that can be with.

• 51:27Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 51:28Speaker 02

With stuff. Cause it's just, it's one of those things of like, if it doesn't, oh, this thing, you won't, won't get this again. If you don't say yes now, I'm like, okay, cool.

• 51:36Theo Von?

Or somebody will be unhappy or something like that.

• 51:38Speaker 02

  Yeah, exactly.

• 51:38Theo Von?

I've done meet and greets, I think for probably 97% of my shows after, right? Just for free, just meet, you know? Uh, but sometimes I just can't do it anymore and it's okay.

• 51:47Speaker 02

  Yeah, of course.

• 51:48Theo Von?

You know, like I had, like, I don't know if it was like, I don't know what happened to me. Something happened to me like a couple of years ago. I just felt like this loud crack even like in my head.

• 51:57Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 51:57Theo Von?

And I was like, all right. And I've never been, I don't think fully the same since then.

• 52:01Speaker 02

  All right. Okay.

• 52:01Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 52:02Speaker 02

  Really?

• 52:02Theo Von?

But I don't know what happened, you know? But I just knew that I had to shut it down and I had to start taking better care of myself.

• 52:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:09Theo Von?

And, um, because at first I thought the stress was like, oh, you're not working hard enough. You're not figuring this out well.

• 52:14Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 52:14Theo Von?

But that's not the truth. The truth was I just. You know, like, there wasn't gonna be anything left of me, you know, I just didn't have anything left. So I had to tighten it up.

• 52:22Speaker 02

Yeah, man, definitely. I think that's, that's the thing as well. Sometimes you feel like, like you say, I like what you said there, the stress felt like I wasn't doing enough or whatever. But it's actually, it's like taking your foot off the gas as opposed to putting it on.

• 52:33Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 52:34Speaker 02

I think that's the important thing.

• 52:35Theo Von?

Yeah. And now I'll shut down. Like if it's a certain conversation or somebody's talking to me sometimes, if somebody's speaking in a certain pentameter or things are too fast or something, I'll just say, hey, I can't even be in this conversation. Like, I just have to like, cause you'll just start to kind of lose your mind.

• 52:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:49Theo Von?

So with the Tourette's, was it, was it getting cool or was it getting bad? Like what kind? What kind were you getting? Cause there's the cool kind where, you know?

• 52:58Speaker 02

Yeah. No, it wasn't, it wasn't the kill kind. I was like, I used to sting a time when I would go like this. Like I'd be sitting here having this conversation with you and I'd be like this.

• 53:06Theo Von?

Oh, yeah. Like a third base coach in, in baseball or something, you know?

• 53:10Speaker 02

  Yeah, like doing signals. Yeah.

• 53:13Speaker 02

So I used to do that shit and I used to like contort my back and stuff in ways. So I had to get like this, I wanted to get this feeling in my muscles where it felt like it was pulling and like cracking and like I was causing myself some real pain. And I had to just, I just, for some reason in my head, I was, I need to feel this to, to know that, I don't know. It was, it was almost like, it was like, I, sorry, I'm saying like a lot and it annoys me, but um.

• 53:36Theo Von?

  I think you're doing fine.

• 53:37Speaker 02

All right. Cool. Yeah. Good, good, good. Um, we can do.

• 53:40Theo Von?

No, I've noticed when people say like a lot, I've not noticed that today.

• 53:43Speaker 02

All right. Cool. Good, good, good. Um, the, uh, yeah, no, it was almost like when I felt I was out of body, I would try and do this like twitch or something to sort of bring myself back in.

• 53:56Theo Von?

  Wow.

• 53:57Speaker 02

Uh, it was really weird. It was really weird. And I looked like I was like on copious amounts of cocaine. Like, yeah, like I was tweaking. Do you know what I mean? Really, really like I was tweaking.

• 54:05Theo Von?

Oh, you were hailing a fricking air taxi with Bobby Taylor over there.

• 54:11Theo Von?

Dude, that's fascinating though. So you would get a feeling and then the, the, some of the tics would make you feel like you're almost getting back into your skin?

• 54:19Speaker 02

Yeah. Well, that's what I felt like. I can't speak for everyone else.

• 54:21Theo Von?

  Fascinating though.

• 54:22Speaker 02

I think they call it like a premonitory urge or something. Sorry. And I think I am, yeah, I was getting them all the time. And when I was performing, it was like really prevalent. Cause it was like, you would get it if you're excited. Any sort of extreme emotion would bring it on or like tired or anything. So it was, um, yeah, it was bizarre. It was really, really bizarre. But like, now I'm noticing even more.

• 54:44Theo Von?

No, it sounds good. Premonitory, it's called?

• 54:47Speaker 02

Premonitory urge. Yeah. Fuck, fuck. I remembered that.

• 54:49Theo Von?

A premon- a premonitory urge is a sensory experience like an itch or a feeling of pressure that occurs before a tic in an individual with, with Tourette's syndrome or other tic disorders. Um, premonitory urges are physical sensations. Um, these urges can manifest as feelings of tension, pressure, an itchy sensation, or a feeling that something is building up and needs to be released. Wow.

• 55:10Speaker 02

  Nice.

• 55:12Theo Von?

Wow. I definitely, I had about, for 15 years I had a, fuck, I'm still doing bad. Still doing pretty bad. Yeah. I'm just two days off of premon- premonitory urge, dude. But I needed it. Couldn't sleep.

• 57:21Theo Von?

But wow, man, that's kind of fascinating. Well, one thing that I think is so interesting about people like you who are like, you know, poets, wordsmiths, and you know, and that's okay, that's what you are, right? You have an ability to share things through words and language, is that when something like this is a part of your world, you can probably express it to people better than some people who don't have that same ability, right?

• 57:43Speaker 02

Yeah, maybe, I don't know, I'm yet to like really delve into it, because I'm still like figuring it out as well, just now, I find I'm better.

• 57:49Theo Von?

  You're still whatin?

• 57:50Speaker 02

  Figuring it out.

• 57:51Theo Von?

  Figuring it out, yeah.

• 57:51Speaker 02

Yeah, I find I'm better at like.

• 57:57Speaker 02

Sort of talking about something once I've understood it a bit more. I'm not really good at talking about things as they're happening.

• 58:05Theo Von?

  Oh, yes, 100%.

• 58:06Speaker 02

It's like, or explaining or writing about stuff as it's like, yeah, happening. I feel like, oh, Jesus Christ.

• 58:14Theo Von?

No, it's like, things are better when you have the chance to look at them.

• 58:16Speaker 02

Yeah, with the benefit of hindsight.

• 58:19Theo Von?

  For sure.

• 58:19Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 58:20Theo Von?

So I'm. Oh, that's the craziest thing about life, though. Sometimes it's like, I don't get, I'm always waiting for hindsight in my life, you know? And the problem is then you've gone.

• 58:30Speaker 02

  It's a relative term.

• 58:31Theo Von?

And also you've gone on from wherever the, wherever you could have had an effect on things.

• 58:35Speaker 02

  Yeah, for sure.

• 58:35Theo Von?

I'll always like delay trying to have like, make a choice until things are in hindsight. But then it's too late.

• 58:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 58:41Theo Von?

You know, sometimes I do that a bit.

• 58:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 58:44Theo Von?

When did you go to therapy for the first time ever? Was it after that?

• 58:47Speaker 02

No, no, I went to therapy before, I've tried therapy a bunch of times and like, no, it's obviously, I'm not.

• 58:54Speaker 02

I don't want to sound disparaging to any other therapists I've been to. There's been, I've been to amazing therapists, but I've never really had like a connection with any of them or like, or sort of felt clicked.

• 59:06Theo Von?

Yeah, for sure. I think a lot of times people go and they think just because they're going to it there. Well, I don't want to say a lot of times people do things. A lot of times I have gone to therapists for years and I didn't know that I, I was really supposed to have like a relationship that I could be honest in. It was like, finally, this was supposed to be like, whether I wanted to pretend like the therapist was my mother or my girlfriend or my brother or a friend, I could pretend like they were that and say things to them that I've always wanted to say to that other person. But I never realized that that's how, was a good way to use a therapist. I always just thought a lot of times it was like, just sit and talk only about how I feel. And it didn't matter if, if I was learning anything, I just thought, oh, since I'm going to a therapist.

• 59:46Speaker 02

You're ticking a box there or something.

• 59:47Theo Von?

Right, I'm checking a box. I didn't even realize that. Anyway, sorry to interrupt you.

• 59:50Speaker 02

No, no, for sure. And I think just to your point there, I was going to a lot of these therapists and I was just. I felt like I was just saying what they wanted to hear after a certain point to get I was looking at the clock and sort of being like, right, okay, what is the, what is the thing I can say to get you out here the quickest or to that makes them think I've like, I wanted them to think that I had a grasp of like my mental health.

• 1:00:18Theo Von?

Oh, yeah, I want to be my own doctor sometimes.

• 1:00:20Speaker 02

Yeah, and, and they would say stuff and I would then, I just found myself, I was, I was parrying everything they were sort of when, when, or when things, and this is what's great about my, my current therapist is really good at this of if we go somewhere, he can sense when I'm being avoidant or being sort of, yeah, being, yeah, being avoidant is, is the, is the word and he sort of pulls me back in and is saying, there's a reason you're being sort of wishy washy here or anything like that. So.

• 1:00:51Theo Von?

Was there an initial moment when you noticed them? Like, was there like one moment that you're like, oh, wow.

• 1:00:58Speaker 02

  What about this therapist?

• 1:00:59Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:59Speaker 02

Yeah, it was, it was actually, I cancelled a session, I cancelled two sessions back to back. And he was on, on it, like, giving me, I don't want to say grief, grief's the wrong word, but like, he was saying, I don't, we don't have to do this. He was very like forthcoming in the fact of if you don't want to do this, this is totally fine, but it feels like you're not engaging with this in a way that's beneficial to you or to, or, or like wasting his time as well. So for me, I was, that was like a, I really, I really respond to that sort of not letting me away with shit. Do you know what I mean? And I find that in sessions now as well. I find it really beneficial when there's, you know, someone called, I like when people call me out on my shit.

• 1:01:44Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:45Speaker 02

  Cause otherwise I'll just.

• 1:01:46Theo Von?

  Keep shitting.

• 1:01:47Speaker 02

Keep shitting. Yeah, I'll keep on shitting. I'm always shitting.

• 1:01:51Theo Von?

Oh dude, the story of my life, you just fucking literally explained the story of my life.

• 1:01:54Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:01:55Theo Von?

It's like, I'll fucking, I'll fucking get a drum, I'll get some juggling balls, I'll tell a riddle, I'll fucking do whatever I gotta do for you not to corner me in a fucking a serious moment.

• 1:02:05Speaker 02

Hundred percent, hundred percent. So, yeah, that's been, I just found that to be really, I don't know, like, it was very. I don't know. I just felt it was really good for me to get that sort of response from someone to be like, I don't like what you're doing. You know, this isn't conducive to a healthy relationship with therapy.

• 1:02:25Theo Von?

  Wow.

• 1:02:26Speaker 02

Um, so yeah, that was funny. That was probably the one I was like, okay, this is, this seems to be, this might be, this might be the guy for me.

• 1:02:33Theo Von?

Yeah. Yeah, I think now I have Tourette's when I, um, like I, every, this is when I get Tourette's. It's like, if I'm sitting somewhere with my freaking girlfriend or whatever, and she's like, I don't think this is working out or whatever, and this is why. And then I just like, get Tourette's, like, I just can't be honest, you know? I just get so scared to be honest. I'm like, and I don't really get like Tourette's like you're saying, but it is, but, but it is a form of Tourette's. It's this, it's this.

• 1:03:04Speaker 02

  Get me out of here.

• 1:03:04Theo Von?

Yes. It's this get me out of, get just,

• 1:03:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:03:08Theo Von?

  get me out of like,

• 1:03:11Theo Von?

I dislike, I don't know. It's so hard for me to stay in a moment, uh, with one other person. It's hard for me to stay in a moment that's not completely in my control.

• 1:03:20Speaker 02

Yeah, for sure. Do you ever find that with like people? I always find I'm really good in groups, but then sometimes if I'm just one on one with someone, even with someone I've known my whole life, I'd be like, what the fuck did I say?

• 1:03:31Theo Von?

Yeah, what the fuck's your name?

• 1:03:32Speaker 02

Sitting in the car with my dad.

• 1:03:34Theo Von?

You're standing there with your grand.

• 1:03:36Speaker 02

What do you say again to people? Like, what is the thing you're meant to, how, how am I meant to start a conversation with someone? Do you know what I mean? Even like my best friends.

• 1:03:42Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:03:43Speaker 02

Yeah. I think I'm a good auxiliary player. Do you know what I mean? Good sideline player. But, um, but yeah, no, I, I empathize with that situation for sure. I, I think, I think.

• 1:03:52Theo Von?

I never thought about it till just now.

• 1:03:53Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:03:54Theo Von?

But that's my Tourette's. It's like this, like, and I literally can feel my fucking skin being like, why are you keeping us here?

• 1:04:05Theo Von?

  You know?

• 1:04:05Speaker 02

  Yeah, for sure.

• 1:04:06Theo Von?

And like, yeah. I mean, I remember one time at a talk, having a conversation, like a real conversation with a girlfriend in the car, and I literally put the window down and hung my fucking arms out of the window like, like I wanted to get out. Like as much of me as could be out here.

• 1:04:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:04:22Theo Von?

Needed to not be in this vehicle, having this real moment of me having to commit to this relationship. Um, I'm gonna pee really fast. Can we take a break for just a minute?

• 1:04:32Speaker 02

  Please.

• 1:04:32Theo Von?

  Okay.

• 1:04:33Speaker 02

  Empty this tank.

• 1:04:35Theo Von?

Yeah, dude. Thanks for sitting. I just take a, take a wee. Oh, you guys call it a wee. I just took a pee.

• 1:04:39Speaker 02

  Took a wee, a piss.

• 1:04:41Theo Von?

That's crazy that one, just we're not, because we're only six hours away from each other by ocean and we call it somehow the letter change.

• 1:04:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:04:50Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's true.

• 1:04:51Theo Von?

  It's fucking baffling.

• 1:04:52Speaker 02

Yeah, a piss or a slash.

• 1:04:54Theo Von?

  Ooh.

• 1:04:55Speaker 02

A slash is a good one. I'm going for a slash.

• 1:04:56Theo Von?

  Going for a slash.

• 1:04:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:04:58Theo Von?

And you come back with blood on your clothes. Your fucking neighbor's missing. See, it's crazy how that changed as well from going to America.

• 1:05:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:05:06Theo Von?

Over there, you're going for a slash. You're just going to fill up a toilet, you know?

• 1:05:09Speaker 02

Yeah, over here it's something more sinister.

• 1:05:11Theo Von?

Yeah, over here you're fucking making a Dateline episode. It's just crazy how things just really fall off as you go across the ocean. No, but man, yeah, thanks for talking about some of that because even it's helped me think like some of those things, it's like hard to realize until you get into conversations where you're talking about some of this stuff, you know?

• 1:05:27Speaker 02

  Of course.

• 1:05:28Theo Von?

And then you gotta be careful because your ego will start to be like, you know what you're talking about. So that for me sometimes is a trap. And I think I gotta like, just like go to more recovery meetings and stuff. So I don't get just that I'm the only voice I'm hearing.

• 1:05:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, of course.

• 1:05:42Theo Von?

That's when it gets really scary for me. Like then I feel like I know something.

• 1:05:46Speaker 02

Yeah, that's the thing. That's why I'm like, I'm really enjoying this because we've been doing the interviews all day and it's very one, sort of one way. And you start, I don't know if you find this, if you're doing stuff or whatever, promo or whatever, but like, yeah, you're just talking about yourself all the time. And I feel like it just becomes this like, I don't know, it just fucks with your head slightly.

• 1:06:07Theo Von?

Yeah, well, it's a shitty song, especially after, if you're a creative person, I feel like after a while, just talking about yourself is just a song you've played. You know, and it's not even, it's just like pieces of you that, it's almost like fool's gold, some of it in a way.

• 1:06:22Speaker 02

  Yeah, for sure.

• 1:06:23Theo Von?

Yeah, that's one thing I noticed about you, man, is just even in asking one question to me, it's like, because it's really kind of a conversation, you know?

• 1:06:30Speaker 02

  Yeah, of course.

• 1:06:31Theo Von?

Was drinking or anything like that a part of like stuff that, because if you were on the road, like drinking, diet, like not getting massages, massages is something that's helped me.

• 1:06:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:06:41Theo Von?

Were there things that you had to adjust that were also creating more havoc for you?

• 1:06:48Speaker 02

Yeah, for sure. I feel like I definitely drank too much initially, like with my,

• 1:06:55Speaker 02

I basically had cut out booze completely when we were on tour on these like for the last like 2022, I'd say I stopped drinking when I was on tour or whatever, or 2023, I can't remember. But yeah, because booze, like I like having a good time.

• 1:07:11Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:07:12Speaker 02

I love having a good time and I really enjoy, I wouldn't be someone who sits by themselves and has like smashes beers or whatever, I'm much more social, the social aspect of boozing and going out and having a nice time and stuff. So, but yeah, definitely, I wouldn't say I was a problem drinker, but it was definitely getting in the way. There was an amazing thing that a guy, we were supporting Sam Smith on tour in 2018. And the monitor engineer was a guy called Lee, was it Lee, remember Lee? And he said to me, remember this thing, he was like, you can get fucked up and you can fuck up, but don't fuck up because you were fucked up. And I feel like that's really stuck with me.

• 1:07:55Speaker 02

And there has been times where I have done that, like I have fucked up because I was fucked up.

• 1:08:00Theo Von?

  Same dude.

• 1:08:00Speaker 02

And I feel like for me, that was, but it is something that always ruminate, like sort of,

• 1:08:07Speaker 02

like ruminates around in my head. And I feel, yeah, I've definitely had to like curtail my boozing at times and be a bit more.

• 1:08:18Theo Von?

  Responsible?

• 1:08:19Speaker 02

Responsible, yeah, choose my battles with it a little bit more. Because there's always an excuse to go out and have a nice time and go have a drink or do this or that. And I'm like, I'm sort of all or nothing with it, but do you know what I mean? I'm not, again, not like, like I'm, and I don't care, I just, if I'm going out, I'm going out, do you know what I mean?

• 1:08:40Theo Von?

Yeah, well, I think it's also part of you guys' culture a lot.

• 1:08:42Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, like the binge drinking in the UK is like a, feels like a bigger thing than.

• 1:08:47Theo Von?

Yeah, you forgot your fucking grandmother.

• 1:08:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:08:51Theo Von?

You know what I'm saying? No judgment, Nan, we miss you. We miss you, Margaret, Melissa, we miss both of you.

• 1:08:59Theo Von?

But yeah, if you fucking drank so much through your childhood that you don't remember your grandmother, yeah, dude. People aren't shocked if you're like, hey, I think I just need to have some checks and balances.

• 1:09:12Speaker 02

But yeah, no, and like you say, diet and stuff like that has been important. I'm trying not to eat as much shit. I've lost, I don't know what it would be in pounds, two stone since, what is two stone in pounds?

• 1:09:24Theo Von?

Two stone, forty pounds, I think. Let's take a gander at it.

• 1:09:29Theo Von?

  Two, twenty eight pounds.

• 1:09:30Speaker 02

Twenty eight pounds since the start of the year, which I'm kind of. Yeah, I feel good about that. And I want to lose more and stuff, but the problem with it, when you're really fat, because I was, I was twenty stone at the start of the year. So what is that? I'm giving my weight away here.

• 1:09:44Speaker 02

I was two hundred and eighty pounds at the start of the year.

• 1:09:46Theo Von?

How do you understand that guy? You heard him?

• 1:09:51Theo Von?

He uses no letters at all in his words. Fucking two letters, eleven words. God, I would never figure you out in a crossword puzzle.

• 1:10:01Theo Von?

If you had a crossword puzzle, it'd be this big. Seventy words in it. I'm just joking, man. But yeah.

• 1:10:09Speaker 02

But yeah, so I'm trying, I'm trying to like get on top of that and stuff and just really, yeah, sort that stuff out as well. But obviously it's a process and.

• 1:10:17Theo Von?

Do you have like, do you have like a, like more of a team now supporting you? Or did you have to bring other people on? I mean, you said you got a therapist, now you work with some.

• 1:10:24Speaker 02

My brother's training me at the minute.

• 1:10:26Theo Von?

  Oh, that's good.

• 1:10:26Speaker 02

The brother that I text and stuff, he's like a qualified personal trainer now.

• 1:10:29Theo Von?

  Well, that's great.

• 1:10:30Speaker 02

So he's been coming down to London and training me and stuff. So that's been lovely and with diet and stuff, he's been helping, et cetera.

• 1:10:37Theo Von?

  You feel better about it?

• 1:10:38Speaker 02

Yeah, I feel better about it. I'm not, I hate it. I hate exercising.

• 1:10:41Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:41Speaker 02

I fucking hate it. Like it's, I mean, people can probably tell by looking at me, but like I'm not, I fucking hate it.

• 1:10:48Theo Von?

Oh dude, there's this, pull up my TikTok, the save ones. There was this dude the other day, he had the funniest thing that I saw on there. It's a, kind of like a black guy, about thirty years old, but it was pretty good.

• 1:11:01Speaker 02

See, you'll save TikToks, hood Easter bunny, sex human implanted with neural like plays a game, scary study about microplastics. This is a real.

• 1:11:09Theo Von?

Oh, this is behind the scenes of my brain.

• 1:11:11Speaker 02

You're getting inside the brain here.

• 1:11:12Theo Von?

I didn't realize that till just now. This is a little bit alarming.

• 1:11:18Speaker 05

I ain't gonna lie, you never realize how long a minute is. Until your ass start fucking exercising.

• 1:11:25Speaker 02

So true. It's so true. Honestly.

• 1:11:28Theo Von?

You never realize how long a minute is.

• 1:11:30Speaker 02

When you do like a plank.

• 1:11:31Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:32Speaker 02

  Fuck me. Yeah. It's intense.

• 1:11:34Theo Von?

We got all the time in the world. Who is that guy? I just want to say his name.

• 1:11:40Speaker 00

  Richie Gatz.

• 1:11:41Speaker 02

  Richie Gatz.

• 1:11:42Theo Von?

Richie Gatz. Shout out Richie Gatz. That's hilarious, dude.

• 1:11:47Theo Von?

Did you have to get on a bunch of medication? You're all right?

• 1:11:49Speaker 02

I'm on an antipsychotic just now called arapiprazole. I was on antidepressants. I was on sertraline, which I think is Zoloft.

• 1:11:57Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah, I'm on there.

• 1:11:58Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was interesting. Really, I couldn't, it didn't really, it just made me numb.

• 1:12:06Theo Von?

  Yeah, can't feel a lot.

• 1:12:07Speaker 02

Yeah, can't feel a lot. And really, I couldn't get like a hard on to save my life.

• 1:12:10Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:12:11Speaker 02

Yeah. And when I did, it would be like this, it would be like a roller coaster that just kept going up.

• 1:12:16Theo Von?

  Oh.

• 1:12:16Speaker 02

It never came down. Do you know what I'm saying?

• 1:12:18Theo Von?

  Oh, dang, no.

• 1:12:19Speaker 02

It was like, it was an intense period of time.

• 1:12:24Speaker 02

But I, yeah, so I came off that. But then the thing is coming off it is like, is really an intense experience.

• 1:12:31Theo Von?

  Unreal.

• 1:12:31Speaker 02

And no one really gave me that heads up. So I was like, really like low and, and sort of, I, I wouldn't say I've ever, I'm always really careful about using the word depressed or whatever, but it's the closest I've felt to that feeling, I feel like, in my life.

• 1:12:45Theo Von?

Yeah, it's scary. It feels like a trap door inside of you opened up like right in the middle of you.

• 1:12:48Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Fuck, spot on. Like, it was so, yeah, so, so intense. So, yeah, I was on that for a bit. I don't think I maybe needed to be on that, especially for as long as I was and for the dose I was on or whatever. But, yeah, this, this, I'm only on this, arapiprazole, antipsychotic, it's like five milligrams. It was really scary when they were like,

• 1:13:11Speaker 02

  when they offered it up.

• 1:13:12Theo Von?

  Yeah, because it sounds scary.

• 1:13:14Speaker 02

Antipsychotic. I'm like, I'm not, I'm not psychotic.

• 1:13:16Theo Von?

Hopefully he's doing better than that.

• 1:13:18Speaker 02

Yeah, a hundred percent. Yeah. But I, yeah, but I'm on it now. And at five milligrams before I go to bed and it's,

• 1:13:24Theo Von?

  And it's helped?

• 1:13:24Speaker 02

  Changed my life genuinely.

• 1:13:25Theo Von?

  Really?

• 1:13:26Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. It's genuinely been a massive, massive help. It just did everything. Like my mood, my anxiety levels are so low these days. I'm just, the stress that I used to feel, I don't feel the stress. I mean, I don't know if it's all related to this or other choices. I guess it's an amalgamation of things.

• 1:13:41Theo Von?

  Right.

• 1:13:41Speaker 02

  But,

• 1:13:42Theo Von?

That's amazing though. What's that called?

• 1:13:44Speaker 02

  Arapiprazole?

• 1:13:45Theo Von?

  Shit, maybe I'll try it.

• 1:13:47Speaker 02

  Yeah, get on that shit.

• 1:13:49Theo Von?

Oh yeah, I'll buy a bag of that.

• 1:13:51Speaker 02

Yeah. What are the uses? Can we go down the uses? The treat a range of mental.

• 1:13:55Theo Von?

Our prep result is used to treat a range of mental health.

• 1:13:57Speaker 02

  Yeah, there you go. Tourette's.

• 1:13:59Theo Von?

Schizophrenia, bipolar one, major depressive disorder, irritability associated with autism spectrum disorder. And Tourette's, there you go. Made it in the very end.

• 1:14:07Speaker 02

Yeah, just just snuck in there. Snuck in there at the end as the door was closing, slid on my knees.

• 1:14:14Theo Von?

Maybe I would try that, man. Oh, what do you think about your songs being used for like on The Voice and stuff like that?

• 1:14:21Speaker 02

  I'm all for it, man.

• 1:14:22Theo Von?

  In these foreign countries, though.

• 1:14:32Speaker 02

Like fast and loose with the melody there.

• 1:14:37Speaker 02

This is beautiful. This is beautiful. This is a really lovely.

• 1:14:39Theo Von?

That is cool. Yeah, you're right.

• 1:14:48Theo Von?

  Did you write this?

• 1:14:49Speaker 02

I wrote a song. Yeah, I wrote this one. Yeah. Oh, and he got to turn around. Come on there.

• 1:14:53Theo Von?

Well, hope so. It's a damn kid. Look at him. Try at least turn around and tell him, I'll give him some Uber money. These are rich people.

• 1:15:01Speaker 02

Yeah, no, this is incredible. Like, I think this is beautiful. Do you know what I mean? This is like a really nice, um, use of it and stuff. And he's great. Incredible.

• 1:15:13Theo Von?

Wow, dude, imagine how brave you have to be to be that age and be able to continue to stand there and sing.

• 1:15:19Speaker 02

  Go on.

• 1:15:29Speaker 02

Pretty good. No, no, that's good. Go on.

• 1:15:31Theo Von?

I think you should sell the song to him.

• 1:15:33Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, exactly.

• 1:15:37Speaker 02

You know, I love all this. I think.

• 1:15:38Theo Von?

Oh, it's cool, man. Yeah, this is cool, man. I hadn't seen this.

• 1:15:45Theo Von?

  Looking just channeling.

• 1:15:46Speaker 02

Yeah, gets a little bit too good though, do you know what I mean? Like fucking just relax, just calm down a little bit.

• 1:15:51Theo Von?

Yeah, like huh, somebody threw him a fricking rugby ball.

• 1:15:55Theo Von?

Put him on the pitch and see who he really is.

• 1:15:57Speaker 02

A little bit too fucking good for my liking.

• 1:15:59Theo Von?

  Oh, that's beautiful.

• 1:16:00Speaker 02

  No, that's amazing. That's incredible.

• 1:16:01Theo Von?

And what's that young man's name? Wow.

• 1:16:03Speaker 02

  Oh, wow.

• 1:16:05Theo Von?

  Bjorn.

• 1:16:07Speaker 02

  Bjorn?

• 1:16:07Theo Von?

  Bjorn.

• 1:16:08Speaker 02

  Go on Bjorn.

• 1:16:09Theo Von?

Go on Bjorn, that's amazing, man. Yeah, you know, I, I, I just think it's interesting, even watching that, it's like, music's just such a, it's like, just such a conduit for other people to feel, you know? And it's crazy that the words can come out of some person, some pen, some, a moment of feeling, and then it, it can metastasize.

• 1:16:26Speaker 02

And that's the thing, I think, um, you never expect, like, when you're writing the song, you're not thinking about that. You're not thinking, someone will sing this on a TV show in Germany, or, or a TV show, like they did it in the Masked Singer and stuff over here. And it's just like, it feels really, um, I guess it's like an honor that, that people would take it and, and want to sing it like that. Especially someone who's like a 10 year old kid, you know?

• 1:16:50Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:16:51Speaker 02

Pretty, um, pretty spectacular. So, um, yeah, I love it, man. I just want to, anything that gets, and the thing is getting the music out there and it's, people are hearing it and

• 1:16:59Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:59Speaker 02

  I think it's, uh, just.

• 1:17:01Theo Von?

Yeah, it's amazing when that starts to happen. Do, is it tough to try to, like, whenever you recalibrate to write again, right? When you recalibrate, um, I know you have a new song, Survive, no, uh,

• 1:17:12Speaker 02

  Survive, yeah.

• 1:17:13Theo Von?

  Survive, it just came out.

• 1:17:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:17:15Theo Von?

Um, is it tough to, and congrats, it's great, man.

• 1:17:18Speaker 02

  Thanks, man. Cheers.

• 1:17:19Theo Von?

I just started listening to it, so sometimes it takes me a bit, even with songs. I'll listen to somebody's album the first time, be like, that's trash.

• 1:17:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:17:25Theo Von?

Two weeks later, I will be fucking

• 1:17:27Speaker 02

  I'm the exact same.

• 1:17:28Theo Von?

Crying in fucking back of my car.

• 1:17:30Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, I'm the exact same.

• 1:17:31Theo Von?

By myself, dude, I drove myself there and then got in the back and cried. Like, this is bad, but the music's good.

• 1:17:38Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:17:39Theo Von?

Um, what, uh, is it hard to recalibrate? Like, do you feel like you have to write for the, like, now you write, trying to write for the stars? Like, how does that get, that's gotta be interesting, huh?

• 1:17:49Speaker 02

Yeah, I think, um, I'm not like. A massive fan of, I didn't grow up writing poetry or grow up. I wanted to play live gigs and I, so it became a thing of, right. Everyone I know who plays live gigs, who I look up to is like singers or whatever. They all have their own songs, so I will write my own songs. And then everyone I know who at the time, who I looked up to, they all played guitar. So I'll learn how to play guitar so that I need to learn the guitar so I can write songs to then play them live. Do you know what I mean? So it was always just a, everything was a means to learn to get on stage and play live.

• 1:18:28Speaker 02

So even now, I'm like, when I'm in, you know, studios or whatever, it's, I find it, I do struggle a lot with like writing. That song there took me like a year to finish. Like that thing of people saying, you know, and I do get it. The best songs come the quickest or whatever, but that's like my biggest song and that's, that took me so long. And I think there is something to be said for, you know, persevering with stuff like that a little bit. But so, yeah, when I get back to writing now, it is, sometimes it's really difficult. Like I really have a hard time, just, I find it hard sometimes to get what I'm thinking.

• 1:19:13Speaker 02

Articulate what I'm, what I'm trying to say, I suppose. And I find that in lots of different walks of life or whatever. But with, yeah, with writing especially, I, I don't find it as easy as maybe. I think I overthink things now a lot more. Yeah. Because I feel that people might actually hear this thing that I'm making. Do you know what I mean? Whereas before, before it was like, no cunt's gonna fucking listen to this. Do you know what I mean? So I, yeah, I really, yeah, I really now overthink that. But again, this is something I'm trying to unlearn and sort of get back to sort of basics and just write for me. And because I wanted writing, because I want to play and stuff like that.

• 1:19:55Speaker 02

So, yeah, it's always a bit of a difficult thing for me. I don't, I don't find it. I don't like wake up, I have to write something today.

• 1:20:06Theo Von?

  Right.

• 1:20:06Speaker 02

That doesn't like, not always, not always anyway.

• 1:20:10Theo Von?

  Right.

• 1:20:10Speaker 02

  I feel like.

• 1:20:12Theo Von?

You gotta follow the feelings when you do have them.

• 1:20:14Speaker 02

So for example, I haven't written a song in like six months recently.

• 1:20:18Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:19Speaker 02

So for the last six months, I've not written anything.

• 1:20:21Theo Von?

  Good for you though.

• 1:20:22Speaker 02

Yeah, I feel like it was important to not to just take a bit of a break off. But I don't know if it's the same way like when you're in stand up or.

• 1:20:29Theo Von?

Oh, I think there's times like I'm looking forward to taking a little bit of a break. But at the same time, there's a part of me that's looking forward to starting with new stuff.

• 1:20:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:20:37Theo Von?

So I'm just grateful that that little part of me exists because there's times that I'm like, well, I still want to do this or, you know, I think we all kind of feel those things at certain moments of like taking a break from something, will it still be there when we come back?

• 1:20:49Speaker 02

Yeah. But then it's the absence that makes you, when you miss it, that's a massive thing as well. Missing that sort of.

• 1:20:56Theo Von?

Where you hear somebody write a great joke and you're like, I gotta give it.

• 1:20:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:21:00Theo Von?

Try again, you know? Like the other day I heard Chris Rock talking and I was like, oh, he's just my favorite.

• 1:21:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:21:05Theo Von?

And him and Louis C K and I was like, oh man, I just can't even believe like I gotta get out there and try again and see what else is inside of me if there's more than I'm capable of, you know?

• 1:21:17Speaker 02

It's not necessarily like a competitive thing, maybe it's that I always find when I hear, if a friend of mine writes an amazing song and I hear it on the radio and I go, fuck, that's so incredible. It's not like I'm not wanting to, oh, I need to be better than them. It's like, oh, I'd love to try and write something that comes anywhere close to how great that is.

• 1:21:34Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:34Speaker 02

Do you know what I mean?

• 1:21:35Theo Von?

Or just to see what's in me. I have no idea what's inside of me.

• 1:21:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:21:38Theo Von?

Fuck, I didn't know anything was inside of me.

• 1:21:40Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 1:21:41Theo Von?

You know, and then some shit came out and you know, and it's been in it. So yeah, just like trying to figure out what's inside of me.

• 1:21:48Theo Von?

Is there a lyric that you've ever written that you feel really proud of? Kind of like, is there one that's?

• 1:21:54Speaker 02

There's like a song I wrote called How I'm Feeling Now, which I wrote when I was really in the sort of shit with stuff and the lyric is, so here's to my beautiful life that seems to leave me so unsatisfied. No sense of self, but self obsessed. I'm always trapped inside my fucking head on and on and on. I thought I'd be happier somehow if you were wondering how I'm feeling now. And it's kind of about like my, how I was feeling in terms of I've got everything I ever wanted and I'm this like.

• 1:22:25Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:25Speaker 02

I'm so sad. Do you know what I mean? I don't feel how I thought I would feel when I, when I got to this point. So that's something I'm really proud of. There's also a song on this upcoming, this upcoming, we're doing an EP at the minute. We're releasing a bunch of stuff and there's a song called The Day That I Die that I'm really, really proud of. It's just like, yeah, it's about, it's about that time when I was really feeling at my lowest. That I'm really excited for people to hear.

• 1:22:55Theo Von?

  That's cool, man.

• 1:22:56Speaker 02

Yeah, man. No, I'm buzzing. I'm buzzing about getting out there and seeing what people think.

• 1:22:59Theo Von?

Yeah. Yeah, I wonder, I'm trying to think, like, I love, I like a lot of, like, uh, like, UK, like, um, like Dermot Kennedy came on the podcast.

• 1:23:11Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:23:11Theo Von?

Dude, that'd be, if you and him did a collaboration, that'd be pretty amazing.

• 1:23:14Speaker 02

Yeah, he's, he's incredible. He's so good. Dermot and I, we were releasing stuff. We'd kind of come up around the same time, especially in that UK, Ireland sort of scene and stuff. But he is, his voice is like, if I, when I was growing up, if there was an artist like Dermot Kennedy, Dermot, that was the sort of artist that I would have been like, all in on. That would have been like my sort of, that's my type of shit, do you know what I mean? Like, his last song, Let Me In or something, I think it's called, is brilliant. It's an amazing, amazing song.

• 1:23:42Theo Von?

Let me take a gander at it real quick, Let Me In.

• 1:23:45Speaker 06

I could've stayed, never went home.

• 1:23:51Speaker 06

It might have been brief, but at least I was free from all of my ghosts.

• 1:23:59Speaker 06

That live in my head like reflections on water that only come once.

• 1:24:07Speaker 06

I still haven't learned the septions in the cinematic version of love.

• 1:24:15Speaker 06

I can't get enough these days. Oh, the world doesn't sing to me quite how it used to seem. This life is a touch too damn much for me. Maybe that's meant for me.

• 1:24:35Speaker 02

  Yeah, he's brilliant.

• 1:24:51Theo Von?

He's great, man. That's awesome. Yeah, dude, if you guys did, there'd be no tears. They'd fuck. They'd be, the oceans would be full. If you and Dermot Kenny did a song together, the oceans would be full, man. It'd be done. It'd be a rap. It'd be a hundred percent saltwater for the planet. We're done. The deserts are done.

• 1:25:09Speaker 02

  I'd love to, man.

• 1:25:09Theo Von?

Um, or James Blake. Did you ever listen to James Blake?

• 1:25:12Speaker 02

James Blake as well, yeah. Retrograde and stuff like that.

• 1:25:14Theo Von?

Yeah, if you guys had like a, I'm just trying to think of things that I like. Sorry, I'm trying to fucking pin work on you. Or just like a up, cause then it would be like, or like, I wonder if he, I wonder if he's ever done any remixes of your stuff. I don't know, I'm just thinking of like, I guess, British artists that I know. But James is such a...

• 1:25:30Speaker 02

  Yeah, well, that's Sam Fender.

• 1:25:32Theo Von?

  Sam Fender?

• 1:25:33Speaker 02

Sam Fender's incredible. Kind of like, he's got that sort of like Bruce Springsteen-y thing going on as well. He's, he's fucking, he's probably like one of the biggest, maybe the biggest in the UK just now.

• 1:25:42Theo Von?

  Is he really?

• 1:25:42Speaker 02

Yeah, he's, he's, I went to see him at, uh, fucking, uh, at London, London Stadium recently. It was, uh, he's, he's a fucking special, special, special.

• 1:25:53Theo Von?

Wow. And it says he just canceled shows to, he had mental health, he was...

• 1:25:56Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Do you know what's so funny? It's become every single, this is again, not to go back to like fame or whatever, or even just, it's really kind of sad, but like every person I know who's achieved something that they grew up aiming for or dreaming of or whatever, seems to have this sort of, seems to struggle with it when it, when they get it.

• 1:26:23Theo Von?

Well, I think, I think we're at a time where there's never been as much coverage of things.

• 1:26:27Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:26:28Theo Von?

There's never been, we've never been in this time before.

• 1:26:31Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:26:31Theo Von?

As society, we've had people that have had popularity and fame over years, right?

• 1:26:35Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:26:35Theo Von?

Um, or have achieved different amazing things or interesting things.

• 1:26:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:26:40Theo Von?

Um, but we've never had this much coverage, this much, uh... I think this much reflection of ourselves, maybe. Um, so, and I think people are suffering from it at all. I think, I think it's a little bit of people are dealing with that at all levels.

• 1:26:55Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure.

• 1:26:56Theo Von?

At all levels of their lives, but it is kind of fascinating because every, every generation, you're into a new experience. So how does fame fit in this world?

• 1:27:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:27:05Theo Von?

When the reflection in the, in the pond has gotten so much bigger.

• 1:27:08Speaker 02

Yeah, a hundred percent. Yeah, man.

• 1:27:10Theo Von?

But yeah, something upbeat, like if you guys and James Blake did like a trap, just something like, fuck it, you know, cause he does like some, I'm just thinking of interesting things that I like, but I'll have to check out Sam Fender. Um, let me think, I wanted to ask you another, oh, do you have a brother? You have a brother?

• 1:27:23Speaker 02

I've got two brothers and a sister. I'm the youngest of four.

• 1:27:26Theo Von?

  And what are they like?

• 1:27:27Speaker 02

They're good, man. They're great. My, my, obviously my, we're all two years apart, so.

• 1:27:31Theo Von?

Okay. Yeah. Same in my family.

• 1:27:33Speaker 02

Yeah. Yeah. So, um, how many, how many are you?

• 1:27:35Theo Von?

  Four, total two and two.

• 1:27:37Speaker 02

  Oh, is it? Yeah. Yeah.

• 1:27:37Theo Von?

Yeah. Any hotties in your, in your?

• 1:27:42Theo Von?

It's an old American joke, you know?

• 1:27:43Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:27:44Theo Von?

  It's an old Catholic joke.

• 1:27:46Speaker 02

  I'm Catholic as well.

• 1:27:47Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah?

• 1:27:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:27:48Theo Von?

Oh, yeah, brother. Good on you, sir.

• 1:27:51Speaker 02

  But, oh, that's us.

• 1:27:53Theo Von?

Oh, there you go, right there.

• 1:27:55Speaker 02

There you go. That's me on the left there with the big ears.

• 1:27:57Theo Von?

Oh, there you go. Christ, I got some myself, lad.

• 1:28:00Speaker 02

  There you go.

• 1:28:01Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:28:03Speaker 02

That's a good noise to make.

• 1:28:05Theo Von?

We'll be fine. Oh, mine can hear yours.

• 1:28:09Theo Von?

I think I'm harder beggar. Okay. Take me left to right. That's you right there. And when's this picture taken? Do you know?

• 1:28:14Speaker 02

Uh, I must be about two there. So maybe like nineteen ninety-eight, nineteen eighty-nine, maybe. I don't know. I'm, I'm totally fucking guessing, but that's my sister, Dani there. That's my brother, Warren.

• 1:28:25Theo Von?

  Warden?

• 1:28:26Speaker 02

  Warren.

• 1:28:27Theo Von?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:28:27Speaker 02

  W A R R E N.

• 1:28:29Theo Von?

  Oh, Warren.

• 1:28:30Speaker 02

Warren. Uh, and that's Aiden on the right there. Um, but yeah, they're great. Like I love them.

• 1:28:35Theo Von?

What are they like? What does Dani like to do?

• 1:28:37Speaker 02

Uh, she likes to, she's a very social person. She's very outgoing, very funny.

• 1:28:42Theo Von?

  Oh, beautiful lady.

• 1:28:43Speaker 02

Yeah, they are. Um, and, uh, yeah, they're all, uh,

• 1:28:48Speaker 02

Yeah, they're all great. Like, we get on.

• 1:28:50Theo Von?

And what about Warren? Is he all right?

• 1:28:51Speaker 02

Yeah, he's great. He's a, he was a musician as well. He kind of got me into sort of music and stuff like that. He was sort of the, I guess, the catalyst for all.

• 1:28:59Theo Von?

Oh, yeah. And he was an older brother?

• 1:29:01Speaker 02

  He's the oldest.

• 1:29:02Theo Von?

Oh, everybody wants to be like their older brother.

• 1:29:03Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, of course, man. He's, yeah, he's amazing. He's a great guy. And Aiden as well, the closest. Me and Aiden used to share a room, so we were probably like, let's see, maybe the closest of the four of us. But it's a, it's an interesting one, because it's like, I'd do, obviously, I'd do anything, but if one of them phoned me and was like, do you want to go for a beer? I'd be like, what's happened? Do you know what I mean?

• 1:29:21Theo Von?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:29:22Speaker 02

What's going on here? Do you know what I mean? It's that sort of relationship. But they're, yeah, they're great. That's amazing. Very, very close family, my mum and dad as well.

• 1:29:29Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:30Speaker 02

It's a really, yeah, it's a nice sort of support network to have.

• 1:29:34Theo Von?

Yeah, I saw some of your family on the documentary, I think.

• 1:29:37Speaker 02

  Yes, on Netflix.

• 1:29:38Theo Von?

It was pretty cool to see.

• 1:29:39Speaker 02

Yeah, man. Yeah, they're great. My dad and my mum are very no-nonsense, like, yeah, working class.

• 1:29:47Theo Von?

  They're Scots, huh?

• 1:29:48Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Proper, proper, proper, yeah, just sort of the people. And I feel like that's really helped. Like, they are very self-deprecating. We all take the piss out of each other, stuff like that. So it feels, yeah, that's really sort of shaped, I guess, who I am these days. Do you know what I mean? But they're, they're great. It's amazing to have them, because I speak to them most, my mum and dad especially, I speak to them most, most days.

• 1:30:12Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:13Speaker 02

Yeah, I try to anyway. But yeah, they're great.

• 1:30:17Theo Von?

Nice, man. Yeah, just nice to include them too.

• 1:30:19Speaker 02

  Yeah, for sure.

• 1:30:21Theo Von?

You were working with BetterHelp. I want to, do want to say that before you leave, because they, they sponsor our program a lot.

• 1:30:25Speaker 02

  Yeah, of course, yeah.

• 1:30:25Theo Von?

And we'll have them in this episode too.

• 1:30:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:30:28Theo Von?

But you are working with BetterHelp to give away?

• 1:30:30Speaker 02

Yeah, seven hundred and thirty-four thousand free hours of therapy is the thing. It was like, so it's an hour, a thousand hours for every single day that I took off. And I was away from, you know, touring and all the rest of it. I just felt like therapy was such a positive experience for me and things that I did. And really, yeah, it just really made me feel quite, it's just got me back to where I wanted to be.

• 1:30:56Theo Von?

Yeah, I mean, we're talking about it. It's something, it's part of your life now.

• 1:30:58Speaker 02

Yeah, and I feel like if I can sort of. Give people, because I don't necessarily think therapy is for everybody at all. Some things are better left in a box under the bed, do you know what I mean?

• 1:31:08Theo Von?

Yeah, talking about you, Ireland. That's this joke, but the shame in Ireland, fuck, they should have a fucking, they should have a.

• 1:31:15Speaker 02

The Catholic guilt, the Catholic guilt.

• 1:31:16Theo Von?

Yeah, they should have, they should be, Ireland should be sponsored by BetterHelp.

• 1:31:22Speaker 02

But yeah, no, and I feel like if I could open up any sort of door for someone to try therapy for the first time or get, because it's, sometimes it's expensive as well.

• 1:31:31Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:31:31Speaker 02

And it's in the UK, obviously we've got the NHS free healthcare, but sometimes that's like overrun at the minute. And people are really struggling to get seen and get therapy through the NHS and stuff sometimes. And people might not have the means to go private or what else. So, um, so, yeah, it was just one of these things. In fact, fucking shout out to BetterHelp for being up for it and being sort of, um, yeah, being so forthcoming and being sound enough to do the, to do this with us. I think it's, um, yeah, hopefully it helps some people and.

• 1:32:01Theo Von?

Yeah, like to get even just having that first experience with therapy, you know, and learning what it's about. And then also not feeling like, okay, now I have a therapist that this has to be perfect. It's just like a relationship in life. You try and find a good relationship, you find one that fits, but you also don't want one that fits too great, because then it can just be a place of comfort. Where, um, you know, you're like, I liked a little bit of conflict with my therapist. Cause then I would be like, there would be times I'd be sitting with my therapist and I'd be like, I would want to say like, at first I'd be like, I want, I didn't like what they just said, right? Say they said something, I didn't like what they said. But instead of saying that, I would just get quiet.

• 1:32:39Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:32:39Theo Von?

Right? But then finally, one day I was like, I didn't like what you just said to me, right? And then they were like, okay, that's great, right? Let's work with that.

• 1:32:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:32:49Theo Von?

  You know?

• 1:32:49Speaker 02

  Opens up a conversation and.

• 1:32:50Theo Von?

Right, but instead I'd always been this other way, like, oh, I shouldn't want to hurt their feeling or this type of thing, you know?

• 1:32:55Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 1:32:56Theo Von?

But once I was able to change the, and I realized, oh, that's their job, their job is.

• 1:33:00Speaker 02

  Breakthrough.

• 1:33:01Theo Von?

Yes, they're, they're hoping for that because it gives them something to work with. I was operating with this different thing, like, oh, everything's supposed to be completely kind of copacetic, you know?

• 1:33:10Speaker 02

  Yeah, for sure, man.

• 1:33:13Theo Von?

What else did I want to say? That's about it. You have a tour. Well, I could talk to you forever, man.

• 1:33:17Speaker 02

Yeah, man. Thank you so much for having us on. I really appreciate it.

• 1:33:19Theo Von?

Yeah, dude, it's so cool. I was so excited about this, man. I think a couple of years ago, we started kind of DMing each other and stuff. And I just like, yeah, thank you so much for all the music that helps us feel, you know?

• 1:33:30Speaker 02

Yeah, man. And thank you for fucking everything you do, like this podcast, like I'm listening every week. So it's like a

• 1:33:35Theo Von?

  Oh, class, man.

• 1:33:37Speaker 02

It's a, no, but it has been really fucking helpful for me in times as well. So I really appreciate it.

• 1:33:42Theo Von?

You bet, dude. Yeah, I can't even believe we get to do this shit, you know? This great shit.

• 1:33:47Speaker 02

  This great shit.

• 1:33:48Theo Von?

Yeah, sorry, God. But no, dude, it's a, yeah, it's cool, dude. It's just, it's cool that we get to sit here and talk about this stuff. And, and, um, yeah, I'm excited for the new tour. So you, you, you're about to go to Australia, right?

• 1:34:00Speaker 02

I go, yeah, I've just announced the Australia tour. We've got a UK tour in September as well.

• 1:34:05Theo Von?

And was this stuff that was on the docket and you had to cancel it before?

• 1:34:07Speaker 02

Hmm. The Australia tour is almost the exact same tour that we canceled. But, um, so yeah, that's that one. But the UK is just a fresh one, sort of get us tuned up a bit and get us back into the swing of things. And then, yeah, hopefully America next year and do some bits and bobs. And I just want to do as much as fucking possible. I'm like, I'm back now and I really want to just dig in a bit and

• 1:34:29Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:29Speaker 02

And get things fucking, get things going again. So, um, yeah, man, I'm fucking excited.

• 1:34:34Theo Von?

Well, as fans, we'll be here when you get to us, you know, so don't, you know, don't feel like you gotta, you know, welcome back.

• 1:34:40Speaker 02

  Yeah, man.

• 1:34:41Theo Von?

Or whatever. I don't, what the fuck am I talking about? I don't know shit.

• 1:34:45Theo Von?

Yeah, I think everybody's just glad you're feeling good and, uh, excited to hear what you do, you know? And whatever you don't do, you're already great, man.

• 1:34:53Speaker 02

Thank you, man. I appreciate that.

• 1:34:54Theo Von?

Lewis Capaldi, man. Thank you, brother.

• 1:34:56Speaker 02

Thank you, Theo, man. Honestly, what a pleasure.

• 1:34:57Theo Von?

  Yeah, cheers. And Margaret?

• 1:34:59Speaker 02

Margaret, not Melissa. Sorry, mum, for forgetting that. Yeah.

• 1:35:05Theo Von?

  Godspeed, woman.

• 1:35:34Speaker 07
