• 2:19Amy Poehler?

  Jack?

• 2:20Speaker 02

  I'm Jack.

• 2:24Amy Poehler?

  McBreach? McBrer?

• 2:27Speaker 02

McBrassel. Oh, God. How are you?

• 2:31Amy Poehler?

You know, one of the best things about doing these things is that I just get to say hi to people. And I miss you. It's good to see you.

• 2:37Speaker 02

Oh, it's been a minute. I guess the last time I would have seen you was February 14th at Radio City Music Hall for the SNL music thing.

• 2:45Amy Poehler?

Oh, that's right. For the big 50th celebration.

• 2:49Speaker 02

How are you? I can't believe I'm doing this. What is this, by the way?

• 2:52Amy Poehler?

Oh, I don't know. Who knows? It's a, um, it's a, it's a pyramid scheme. No, this is a podcast called Good Hang, and I'm having the Jonas Brothers on tomorrow.

• 3:03Speaker 02

  I'm familiar. I'm familiar.

• 3:05Amy Poehler?

When, when were you, when did you become first familiar with the Jonas Brothers as an entity rather than actual people?

• 3:11Speaker 02

Good question. As an entity, I mean, it would have been, I guess, early in their career because we knew like who all the Disney kids were.

• 3:18Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 3:19Speaker 02

And they were some of the, you know, OG Disney kids. But, I mean, because I am older than everyone.

• 3:28Amy Poehler?

  Not me, sir. Not me.

• 3:31Speaker 02

  We're a close, a close second.

• 3:32Amy Poehler?

Still got you. Still got you.

• 3:34Speaker 02

But I didn't necessarily know their work. I knew they were very, very popular. And I knew that they did movies together as brothers. And, you know, it was interesting to watch that evolution because, I mean, I could not even imagine working with any member of my family. And yet here they were with this whole empire.

• 3:54Amy Poehler?

I know. It's really, really fun to think about the questions I want to ask them because it is, they are working with their family. It is not, a family business is not easy.

• 4:05Speaker 02

It's a very interesting dynamic to watch, but also... They are all just genuine human beings, just wonderful young men. And it really has been a pleasure to get to know all of them together and each of them individually.

• 4:19Amy Poehler?

So how did you meet them? How did you become friends?

• 4:21Speaker 02

February 14th, another Valentine's Day, 2009, Alec Baldwin was hosting Saturday Night Live with your musical guest, the Jonas Brothers. And Alec, very graciously, had an opportunity for me to come up during the monologue and do a fun little bit with them. And so because I'm there for the, you know, days leading up to it for those rehearsals, I got to hang out with the Jonas Brothers. So delightful. They were just big fans of comedy and they're just like, again, good, solid folk. So that is when I met them. And over the years, our paths crisscrossed through different things. I was staying at the same hotel in Toronto as Nick Jonas several years later.

• 5:01Speaker 02

And they all came to Saturday Night Live again when Demi Lovato was a musical guest. So a lot of just crisscrossing through the years. And then more recently, Nick Jonas got back into acting or, you know, focusing on acting and was on a show called Scream Queens with my neighbor Glenn Powell.

• 5:22Amy Poehler?

  Right, that's your neighbor.

• 5:24Speaker 02

And all that kind of stuff.

• 5:25Amy Poehler?

  You are so connected, Jack.

• 5:28Speaker 02

I might be too connected. It's weird. It's suspicious.

• 5:34Amy Poehler?

  It's fantastic.

• 5:35Speaker 02

It's the best. I love it.

• 5:37Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 5:37Speaker 02

  Famous people are the best.

• 5:44Amy Poehler?

Okay, so Glenn and you and Nick and others have game nights, I'm hoping?

• 5:49Speaker 02

Correct. Game nights, movie nights. Oh, oh, you're gonna love this. Nick Jonas's favorite movie is They Came Together.

• 5:59Amy Poehler?

And you know why I know this? During COVID.

• 6:02Speaker 02

During COVID, I went to your driveway.

• 6:04Amy Poehler?

There was only a few people I saw during COVID, and one of them was Jack McBrayer, who came to my driveway masked and gloved, because that was back when we were really... We were taking all precautions to sign a They Came Together poster, a film that me and Paul Rudd did for Nick Jonas.

• 6:23Speaker 02

  Nick Jonas, whose birthday is?

• 6:25Amy Poehler?

The same birthday as mine, September 16th. And the reason why Jack knows that is because Jack is-

• 6:32Speaker 02

  A savant.

• 6:33Amy Poehler?

Is a savant. One of his love languages is you remember and you take deep, you care deeply about reaching out to people on their birthday. And everyone gets a Jack McBrayer happy birthday text. And it means a lot to a lot of us.

• 6:49Speaker 02

It's so fun. And you know, I learned a lot. Some people are like, oh, you only texted me this year. I like it when you call me so I can keep the message. I was like, oh, my gosh. So, yeah, I tried to shake it up. Today I only have one. It's Leslie Powell, Glenn Powell's sister. Oh, I do whole families. I know, it's like, let's see, Kevin Jonas is November 5th.

• 7:08Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 7:09Speaker 02

Joe Jonas, August 15th. And Nick Jonas, September 16th.

• 7:13Amy Poehler?

And so as Nick and Joe and Kevin's friend,

• 7:18Amy Poehler?

what question do you think I should ask them today?

• 7:22Speaker 02

What is their conflict resolution situation like? I think, I wonder, like, I think that their lives are so unique because they've been famous so much longer than they've been not famous.

• 7:36Speaker 02

  What does that feel like?

• 7:38Amy Poehler?

What you're talking about is so interesting because the question there is like, you've had, you've had to deal with fame for a really long time. What's your relationship to it now?

• 7:47Speaker 02

And I wonder too, like, if each of the individual brothers deals with it differently. For example, you know, Kevin and his family are off on the East Coast. And, and you know, there's co-parenting going on with, you know, there's just a lot of different versions of what's happening. And, but they're all just solid dudes. And it's always, always a joy to see each and every one of them. I'm such a fan of them as people. Also, they're good at music.

• 8:11Amy Poehler?

  They're really good at music.

• 8:12Speaker 02

  They're ugly. They're very ugly.

• 8:17Amy Poehler?

All right. Jack, I love you. Thank you so much for giving us the time and the question.

• 8:22Speaker 02

Oh, my gosh. Well, I hope it was helpful and yes, have so much fun with them. I'm so happy to see you.

• 8:26Amy Poehler?

  You too, buddy.

• 8:29Amy Poehler?

This episode is brought to you by Lanage. Being a big fan of multitasking, I love a two-in-one. Like, for example, I like a sofa that's also a bed, and it's called a sofa bed, and I enjoy that. • 9:06Amy Poehler?

I am so psyched you guys are here. Thank you so much for coming. Thanks for having me here. And also, you have, I, we just found out that Nick has two shows tonight.

• 9:14Speaker 03

  Two shows.

• 9:14Amy Poehler?

It's a two-show day, which I know from Broadway is, um, is, means you have a matinee.

• 9:21Speaker 03

  Matinee, an evening show.

• 9:22Amy Poehler?

And so, thank you for not, um, for like talking, because I know a lot of people have to save their voice for a two-show day.

• 9:27Speaker 03

Well, a lot of people are weak.

• 9:29Amy Poehler?

That's for sure. That's for sure.

• 9:32Speaker 03

You gotta hit the vocal gym.

• 9:33Amy Poehler?

But seriously, you guys are pros. I mean, and you have to sing all the time.

• 9:38Speaker 03

  And good.

• 9:39Amy Poehler?

  And sing good.

• 9:40Speaker 04

Yeah. You can sing, but you gotta, see, singing's one thing. Singing good is another, you know?

• 9:46Amy Poehler?

And do you worry about losing your voice?

• 9:48Speaker 03

Yeah, I was paranoid about losing my voice or getting sick.

• 9:51Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 9:51Speaker 04

  Today or just in general?

• 9:52Speaker 03

  Just this whole run.

• 9:53Amy Poehler?

Yeah, it's kind of like a living stress dream.

• 9:55Speaker 03

  Oh, my gosh.

• 9:55Amy Poehler?

I mean, have you, have you had to cancel shows because of?

• 9:58Speaker 03

  Because of Nick, yeah.

• 10:01Speaker 03

We've canceled shows, uh, there was a long run. Actually, because of me. Yeah. The first, the first show we ever canceled was in, was in Zurich. Nick didn't like Zurich, so we were like, we had to cancel the show.

• 10:11Amy Poehler?

He was like, "I'm out of here."

• 10:12Speaker 03

But it was nice, because we did have a great day off in Zurich. It was fantastic. But we stayed in the room.

• 10:17Amy Poehler?

There's nothing better than canceled plans. And I know you love your fans and you want to provide good shows. But.

• 10:22Speaker 03

There's nothing you can do about it.

• 10:23Amy Poehler?

There's nothing you can do about it.

• 10:24Speaker 03

  Let's party.

• 10:24Amy Poehler?

If your plans are canceled, there's no better feeling.

• 10:26Speaker 04

Especially if you're not the one canceling them.

• 10:29Amy Poehler?

But, um, you were in Les Mis as a little kid.

• 10:31Speaker 03

  One day more.

• 10:34Speaker 03

  Another day, another destiny.

• 10:41Speaker 05

  You got it.

• 10:45Speaker 04

That show is, I saw it so many times.

• 10:47Amy Poehler?

  Me too.

• 10:48Speaker 04

When Nick, like, it was actually one of my, like.

• 10:50Amy Poehler?

Oh, when, when your brother was in it?

• 10:51Speaker 04

Yeah, when he was in it. And so it was one of those things where I felt so empowered, though, and so, like, cool kid, because my class in that year that he was in the show went there on a field trip. Like, that's, their field trip every year was to go see Les Mis.

• 11:03Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 11:04Speaker 04

My history class, I guess. And he was in the show that day.

• 11:08Amy Poehler?

  That's cool.

• 11:09Speaker 04

I was like, yes, my brother.

• 11:09Amy Poehler?

It was like, I can get you backstage if you want.

• 11:11Speaker 04

It kind of, no, I got to, like, leave, like, stay there afterwards. And, like, they all went back to school. And I was like, cool, hanging out, you know?

• 11:18Amy Poehler?

You were like, I'm not going back to school today.

• 11:19Speaker 04

I felt so cool. Thanks, Nick. You finally made me feel cool.

• 11:22Amy Poehler?

I wanted to say eldest child to eldest child.

• 11:25Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 11:26Amy Poehler?

Um, first of all, not a big deal, but you arrived first today.

• 11:30Speaker 04

  I always arrive first.

• 11:31Amy Poehler?

Of course you do, because, I mean, congratulations, having an older brother who's keeping it together, but the.

• 11:38Speaker 04

Definitely not keeping it together, but I'll be on time.

• 11:40Amy Poehler?

But the eldest child. And you guys are basically, you kind of, you two share the middle section, because you were the baby until.

• 11:48Speaker 05

Right. Oh, yeah, we're, yeah, we share the middle child.

• 11:52Speaker 03

For those that don't know, we have a, a younger brother.

• 11:54Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 11:54Speaker 03

  From Franklin Jones.

• 11:55Amy Poehler?

Franklin, it was born, like, eight years later than you?

• 11:57Speaker 03

Eight years, yeah, after me. Um, he's incredible.

• 12:00Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 12:01Speaker 03

He's, but he's, you know, he took away.

• 12:04Speaker 05

I was originally the middle child, and then now he fucked it all up.

• 12:07Amy Poehler?

Yeah, he took everything from both of you. I mean, you're not the baby, you're not the middle.

• 12:11Speaker 05

Yeah, I mean, I don't know what I am anymore.

• 12:13Speaker 04

  You kind of don't matter.

• 12:13Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you're the second of four. There's literally no name for it or anything.

• 12:16Speaker 03

How many siblings do you have?

• 12:17Amy Poehler?

I have just a younger brother. That's it. So I'm the eldest. eldest sister. You guys don't have any sisters to, like, keep you, like, keep your brains functioning, basically.

• 12:28Speaker 04

  Yeah, it's a lot.

• 12:29Amy Poehler?

  It is, it's.

• 12:31Speaker 04

  It's a lot of boys.

• 12:32Amy Poehler?

  It's a lot of boys.

• 12:33Speaker 04

But now we all have girls, so it's, you know.

• 12:35Amy Poehler?

  That's right.

• 12:36Speaker 04

So it's gonna be a whole thing.

• 12:37Amy Poehler?

God is fair. God is fair. Um, okay, we are gonna talk about your new record, but I want to talk about New Jersey.

• 12:43Speaker 04

  Hmm, cool.

• 12:44Amy Poehler?

So many good singers from New Jersey, so many good bands from New Jersey.

• 12:48Speaker 05

  And people.

• 12:49Amy Poehler?

  And people.

• 12:50Speaker 05

  Some people.

• 12:50Amy Poehler?

  Tell us about your hometown.

• 12:53Speaker 04

Wow. We grew up in a place called Wyckoff, New Jersey. Uh, we, I still live in New Jersey.

• 12:58Amy Poehler?

  Nice.

• 12:58Speaker 04

  I never really got out.

• 13:00Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 13:00Speaker 04

It sucked me, it sucked me back in.

• 13:02Amy Poehler?

  Of course.

• 13:03Speaker 04

Um, but no, growing up in Jersey was the first time, like, we, we did grow up in Dallas as well, in North Carolina and Arizona. We like moved around a bunch with our family. But New Jersey's where we like was home, we like growing up. And when, I think, it's the first place I remember feeling like riding bikes, seeing houses, like kids playing in, you know, the yards and like, it was like perfect.

• 13:25Speaker 03

The first time you saw a house?

• 13:26Amy Poehler?

  Seeing houses.

• 13:26Speaker 04

  Well, we live in, yeah.

• 13:27Speaker 03

I'm sorry, it was just a really funny way to put that.

• 13:29Speaker 04

Like, I meant to say like, white picket fence, house, like that, like the American dream.

• 13:33Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 13:33Speaker 04

  I, I've never seen a home before.

• 13:35Speaker 03

First time I rode a bike, saw a house.

• 13:37Amy Poehler?

  But yeah, there is.

• 13:38Speaker 04

We're supposed to do the show after 12 o'clock and like, you know.

• 13:42Amy Poehler?

Yeah, but, but you're, you're, where you're, like, your hometown, and it's the name of your new record, like, it's, it means something to you. It's, it's like, you know, that, like, they're saying, like, you can't take the, you can't take the Wyckoff, New Jersey out of the boy.

• 13:56Speaker 04

  Totally.

• 13:57Amy Poehler?

Like, you, you, it's like you're like a homing pigeon or something. Like, you do end up going back to some version of it, or, or deeply rejecting it. It's like one or the other.

• 14:07Speaker 03

That was one of the things that we, we talked a lot about because we, you know, we're, we're also gearing up for, for the tour, which represents, you know, our 20th anniversary of being a band.

• 14:16Amy Poehler?

  I know, congratulations.

• 14:18Speaker 03

Thank you. It's, it's been a wild ride, but one of the things in, in just talking through creative that we initially sort of butted heads on, and then we found the sort of solve for it emotionally is like, not everyone has a great relationship with their hometown, to your point.

• 14:30Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 14:30Speaker 03

And not everyone has a great relationship with their family. But one of the things that we're, I think, most grateful for is that our fans have chosen this family. But, meaning our family, but also each other. And you see it at the shows and, and they really band together to say that even if you're...

• 14:45Speaker 05

Relationship with your hometown is complicated. Even if your relationship with your family is complicated, you're safe here, in the same way that we felt safe, you know, in our hometown, growing up and with each other.

• 14:54Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 14:55Speaker 05

And it's a, it's a pretty incredible thing to look out and see now, that sort of multi-generational effect of the fanbase.

• 15:02Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 15:02Speaker 05

And how it stems, you know, to some really deep touchpoints for us, both with our roots in Jersey and our musical roots, speaking of some of those legends from Jersey.

• 15:11Amy Poehler?

Okay, I want to talk about the tour because I'm obsessed with how people act on tour. You have, you have all toured at various stages of your life. And let me just say, congratulations on 20 years. I think when people think of you because they met you when you were young, they still think of you, and by the way, this is going to be great. As you get older, people will always think you're younger than you are. But they knew you and met you when you were younger, and I don't think they realize the amount of time you've been performing. 20 years together is a huge milestone. And it's awesome. And you've now, I'm sure, gone out and toured in a million different ways. And tours probably feel different every time you go out. Now that you're this age, what does touring look like to you?

• 15:54Amy Poehler?

What do you do, not do, saving your voice, going out at night? What does it look like?

• 15:59Speaker 05

Wow. I think it's changed a lot for us over the last like five years. Our most recent tour we went on, it was celebrating five albums.

• 16:10Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 16:10Speaker 05

So we were trying to play five albums in one show. It's about a two and a half hour show.

• 16:14Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 16:15Speaker 05

We did a lot of medleys, so we were able to make the time. But it was a lot on our voice and just physically exhausting. And we played, I think, 100 and some, 100, how many? I don't even know. It was a lot of shows.

• 16:25Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 16:26Speaker 05

  It's really impressive.

• 16:27Amy Poehler?

  Incredible.

• 16:28Speaker 05

  And thank you.

• 16:30Amy Poehler?

  It is, it's so much.

• 16:31Speaker 05

And we had, you start to realize you're not in your early twenties anymore. You have to really take care of your body and so. For me, I was like not drinking before shows.

• 16:41Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 16:43Speaker 05

And then trying to, you know, get at least six, seven hours of sleep. We also all have kids, so we have to be up and we want to be up in the morning.

• 16:50Amy Poehler?

Six or seven, it's not enough.

• 16:52Speaker 05

  Not enough.

• 16:53Amy Poehler?

  And then after the show?

• 16:54Speaker 05

  Pretty hungry.

• 16:55Speaker 03

It takes time to kind of like wind down and decompress. The high is so high.

• 16:59Speaker 04

Nick takes way longer. Like, I'll be, I could be asleep within an hour. Like, on the plane, there's so many photos of Joe Hasfield, he's just, oh, you know.

• 17:06Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, you're out.

• 17:07Speaker 04

It's just one of those things. I'll watch a movie, I'll, crap. But Nick will be up till four or five in the morning, just because, could they come down?

• 17:12Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 17:13Speaker 05

Just, you know, my mind's like racing after the show about how they could be better and...

• 17:20Speaker 04

  And...

• 17:21Amy Poehler?

And you gather everyone together and you give them notes.

• 17:23Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 17:24Speaker 03

The note, yeah, the notes take a while, too.

• 17:26Speaker 04

The thing, I think the thing that's the most different from me is... Hours, hours.

• 17:31Amy Poehler?

  Hours of notes.

• 17:33Speaker 04

I think the thing that's most different from me is like, I've spent a little bit more time. I like, after this last tour, I noticed it even more so, but like, working with someone, like a therapist, to help me understand that coming down from it all, like, after a big project like that. Like, being in the midst of the touring, I was so in it for so long, that I feel like coming, the, the come off, it can be so dramatic as well. It's almost like, everyone says, like, talk about like the show blues. Like, after you do a project, like, the next morning, you wake up and there's like, you're like, kind of depressed. Well, it can be the same, for me at least, in my personal story, about, like, after a tour.

• 18:07Amy Poehler?

  Yes, of course.

• 18:08Speaker 04

  Re-acclimating can be difficult.

• 18:10Amy Poehler?

It's so interesting you say that, because, you know, I wanted to ask you, like, your relationship to fame. You've been famous for a long time, and it's, that's a microcosm of the bigger idea of like, sometimes success, or things that are successful, or just like, big, giant serotonin bursts, and like, cortisol dumps and all that stuff. Like, it is, it is a roller coaster to come down from.

• 18:33Speaker 04

Well, I think redefining for myself was redefining what the goal is, and redefining what a win is.

• 18:37Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 18:37Speaker 04

Because things change constantly about, like, what success means.

• 18:43Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 18:43Speaker 04

I think now, for me, success means, like, enjoying my time doing what I love.

• 18:48Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 18:49Speaker 04

And no matter what the outcome is, as long as we're doing it together, as long as my family is with us and enjoying that, and they're happy, and that's a win for me.

• 18:57Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 18:58Speaker 04

Obviously, you do want milestones to happen, but like, that's the bigger picture.

• 19:02Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 19:03Speaker 05

You know, it's easier to say some of these things and, and...

• 19:07Speaker 03

Truly believe that you have a grip and a perspective on how to maintain some sanity. And then functionally, you get into the weeds of life in the public eye and traversing all that is complicated about it. I think it's just about, you know, trying your best to, and this is gonna sound so cliche before I say it, but trying your best to be a kind and thoughtful person while you're dealing with your own shit.

• 19:32Amy Poehler?

That's absolutely right. And I feel the older you get, the more you realize, the less you know. Like you're like, oh, I actually am less certain.

• 19:39Speaker 03

And there's some freedom in that, too.

• 19:40Amy Poehler?

Totally. But you're fine with fame, Joe?

• 19:43Speaker 05

I'm actually really good at it. I don't really understand what they're talking about, to be honest. You get it.

• 19:48Amy Poehler?

I don't have no problem. Like, literally, like, every time.

• 19:51Speaker 03

  I know, it's so funny.

• 19:51Amy Poehler?

Like, I'm always, like, feeling totally fine.

• 19:53Speaker 03

Yeah, we can hear you guys.

• 19:54Speaker 05

Oh, I'm sorry. I don't wanna sound like a broken record, but I actually told them to say all that.

• 20:03Speaker 05

And I will add that the why, kind of what you mentioned earlier, like, that was also on that tour that we were on. I think more so, like, after a while, you're like sixty shows in, you're like, wow, this mountain that we're gonna climb every night, and I'm tired, or you're going through something really crazy in your personal life. And you feel like, okay, well, how do I navigate this and also try to do a great performance?

• 20:26Amy Poehler?

I mean, as a person that goes to very few concerts because they're too late, they're too long.

• 20:33Speaker 03

I'm with you, honestly. I don't really like, I have a hard, I cancel a lot of concerts. So what do you think is too, what do you think is, like, the sweet spot?

• 20:40Amy Poehler?

Okay, well, now, look, there are exceptions, like, of course, Taylor, incredible, her show, of cour-, it's incredible. Bruce Springsteen, incredible, like, these shows that should be three hours and are incredible productions. But unless you're going that big, I can't do a two and a half hour concert. I'm so, I'm so glad.

• 20:57Speaker 03

  I'm with you.

• 20:58Amy Poehler?

I'm excited because it's just too long.

• 21:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 21:01Amy Poehler?

And I wanna hear the hits. I don't, like, I don't know why someone is mad at me when they, when they don't play the hits. I'm like, why are you mad at me? What, what happened? Why are we hearing, why are we hearing the songs that we love? Like, but it is, it's-

• 21:14Speaker 03

You got me out of my house. I got in my car. Or I was driven there.

• 21:17Amy Poehler?

And also the standing. I mean, if everyone could do-

• 21:21Speaker 03

  Just take a seat.

• 21:22Amy Poehler?

I think how great it would be if everyone took a seat.

• 21:24Speaker 03

  Really?

• 21:25Speaker 04

I will say, yes, I understand from the audience perspective. But I think from a momentum perspective for us, I feel like that would be a shift. That would be a shift.

• 21:33Speaker 03

The older you get, like, the older you get, I like did it.

• 21:35Amy Poehler?

But what if everyone agreed, everyone was like, hey, we're gonna have a really good time, and we're not, we're, we'll see it at the end, no pressure.

• 21:42Speaker 03

You really get it when you go see, like, I saw Fleetwood Mac, and it was like, the first three songs, like, ah, and then the audience just collectively was like, mm.

• 21:48Amy Poehler?

  Incredible.

• 21:49Speaker 03

And they're like, they got it.

• 21:50Amy Poehler?

  They got it.

• 21:50Speaker 03

And no questions, like, guys, get up, it's Fleetwood Mac.

• 21:52Amy Poehler?

No, they're like, guys, I love Fleetwood Mac, and I gotta last, I gotta last.

• 21:59Amy Poehler?

I gotta last, I gotta last, like, I can't stand up for an hour, like, what am I, like...

• 22:05Speaker 04

  For an hour, yeah.

• 22:06Speaker 03

Are we waiting in line for something?

• 22:07Amy Poehler?

Yeah, am I at, you know, my granddaughter's wedding, what's happening?

• 22:11Speaker 04

They have those things that, like, wearable seats now, you can just, like, flip it back and just kind of stand and sit.

• 22:16Amy Poehler?

  Are you serious?

• 22:16Speaker 04

  Yeah, it's a thing.

• 22:17Amy Poehler?

  Wearable seats?

• 22:18Speaker 03

  Wearable seats?

• 22:19Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 22:19Amy Poehler?

  You stand and sit?

• 22:20Speaker 04

There was a whole bit of this, I just watched it, Silicon Valley did it, like, a whole bit, about one of the guys had a wearable seat, and he was like, hated him because of it.

• 22:27Amy Poehler?

  I would totally love that.

• 22:31Amy Poehler?

It's basically like a backpack that is...

• 22:32Speaker 04

It's like, literally, like, well, it looks like, and he just, like, kind of flips his butt back and, like, sits.

• 22:36Amy Poehler?

Honestly, if I can get a seat, it changes my whole night. If I was at a show and I, and I had a seat, I'd stay another two hours.

• 22:43Speaker 04

You know what's coming in your mail tomorrow.

• 22:45Amy Poehler?

  Wearable seats?

• 22:48Amy Poehler?

No, but I mean, but, but, I, I do, like, as a, as a person who goes and watches performances, and, you know, it's funny, comedy and music have an interesting, um, like, we're kind of cousins, like, I know you guys are big fans of comedy, and you're very funny, and you've come and done SNL, and you have a great sense of humor about yourself, and you love funny people, and I feel like that happens a lot with comedians, like comedians are like, man, I wish I was a musician. I'm like, I love the, the, the feeling, like, there's just, like, they, they understand each other sometimes.

• 23:20Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 23:20Amy Poehler?

What is your relationship to comedy? How important was it to you, and like, you know?

• 23:24Speaker 03

Well, early in our career, we had no traction going on the music yet. This was like, 2005 and 6, and YouTube was kind of new, and it was a new and exciting way for us to connect with our fans, and, um, we, we were teenagers with a, a flip camera, whatever that was, and we were just making funny videos, and, and we always, like, you know, loved and admired, um, great comedic actors, and, and...

• 23:52Speaker 03

I think probably just had a ton of confidence. And obviously no comedic chops. But it was enough.

• 24:02Speaker 03

Specifically, this side of the table, no comedic chops. But we. We really.

• 24:09Amy Poehler?

  Let's all look to camera.

• 24:10Speaker 03

Use that as a way to promote our music. And then eventually, when things started to happen with Disney and everything else. You know, it became a lot more structured and there was like writers and all this kind of stuff. And it was like a whole new world for us. But what was, I think, really empowering and exciting was that they listened to some of our ideas and allowed us to infuse some of our own voices into the characters that we played and the various projects we did. And then so when we, yeah, we got the call to do SNL. The first time we did it was Valentine's Day 2009. It's wild.

• 24:40Amy Poehler?

  The host was Alec Baldwin.

• 24:41Speaker 03

Alec Baldwin's the host. He played the fifth Jonas Brothers in the skit, which was very funny. Yes, he did.

• 24:48Amy Poehler?

And you, how old were you when you did that, 2009?

• 24:52Speaker 03

  I was seventeen.

• 24:54Amy Poehler?

  Dang.

• 24:55Speaker 03

Twenty-two. And it was, yeah, it was like one of our biggest dreams come true. And there was this really wild digital short that we did with Andy and the guys.

• 25:07Amy Poehler?

I was just listening to, I listened to Lonely Island and Seth Meyers' podcast. They were talking about it today.

• 25:12Speaker 03

  Oh, really? Oh, really? Cool.

• 25:14Amy Poehler?

They were talking about it today. On the way over here, they were talking about how fun it was to do it with you, how you guys. And it came out of the stupid songs you guys would make with each other.

• 25:23Speaker 03

Yeah. We had a idea of doing some eighties hair metal band called Property of the Queen. Great name, by the way.

• 25:31Amy Poehler?

  Great name.

• 25:32Speaker 03

  Not offensive at all.

• 25:33Amy Poehler?

  Incredible looks in that.

• 25:36Speaker 03

Oh, yeah. And then they built this whole story out of it, which was so fun.

• 25:41Amy Poehler?

Forte was playing guitar with you. And.

• 25:44Speaker 03

  There's some.

• 25:45Amy Poehler?

And I think Bill was like playing a wizard.

• 25:48Speaker 03

The wizard. The whole concept, which was the brilliant unlock of it.

• 25:52Amy Poehler?

  That was a good song.

• 25:52Speaker 03

All we had was like a couple of really dumb songs that we wanted to do something with. And this idea to do like an eighties hair metal band. Ask the wizard. And so Andy was like, so what if, what if you guys are like, you know, time travelers or vampires or something? And Bill is this wizard who's granted you this wish to come back in time to play SNL on Valentine's Day 2009. And I catch you. Yeah, and he catches us in our con.

• 26:15Speaker 05

  It was very funny.

• 26:17Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, it's so good.

• 26:18Speaker 05

What was the, the love song? Our love is like the Great Wall of China, was that it? Our love is like the Great Wall of China. You can see it from outer space. So good. That's so dumb.

• 26:31Amy Poehler?

Do you guys make up dumb songs all the time? And when you're, do you sing other people's music?

• 26:36Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 26:37Amy Poehler?

What do you sing with each other, like?

• 26:38Speaker 03

  I have this, this theory.

• 26:40Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 26:40Speaker 03

It's, it's not a controversial one, but it's, it's a litmus test for me of, if a song could be a hit.

• 26:45Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 26:46Speaker 03

And it's if you can spoof it.

• 26:48Speaker 05

  Oh, yeah.

• 26:48Amy Poehler?

  Oh, great.

• 26:49Speaker 05

If you can make it anything else. We have that.

• 26:51Speaker 03

  And it works.

• 26:51Speaker 05

We have one of those, we have a song on New York called, "I Can't Lose." It's, "I can't lose, but I keep singing, I can't poop." And I think it should be a Pepto Bismol ad or something. Well. But the, the, the next line is, "When I'm with you." So that, we'll have to figure that one out. Maybe it's like a date, you're on a date and it's awkward. They're anxious, they're anxious. They're on vacation. That's so funny.

• 27:15Amy Poehler?

  But you're right.

• 27:15Speaker 05

That's so specific, actually, on vacation. Well, yeah, that's a thing that people deal with.

• 27:19Amy Poehler?

What, how do you flip around songs that are out right now? Like, I know what you're talking about, like, when you, when you get into a song and then you start singing it a different way. I mean, you're kind of Weird Al it for a better, for a shorthand.

• 27:31Speaker 05

Yeah, I think that that's a sign, he, he did pick hit songs to do.

• 27:35Amy Poehler?

Do you sing har, do you sing harm, do you harmonize two other people's songs when you're together? Like, I just want to harm.

• 27:42Speaker 05

You just want to sing with it, don't you?

• 27:43Amy Poehler?

Yes, because I feel, okay. I am, I'm an okay singer, I'm fine, I'm not good, but I'm a pretty good harmonizer. But I feel like I want to challenge myself to see if I can get in and create a, a fourth part.

• 27:59Speaker 05

  Okay, love it.

• 28:00Amy Poehler?

  What should we sing?

• 28:01Speaker 03

How can you stop the rain from falling down?

• 28:07Speaker 03

How can you miss? That was it? Yeah. Perfect. It was there, yeah.

• 28:13Amy Poehler?

  Thanks, it's like a middle.

• 28:14Speaker 03

  It's a middle part.

• 28:15Amy Poehler?

Thanks for entertaining me. I love that song.

• 28:18Speaker 03

  It's a great song.

• 28:18Amy Poehler?

Great song. In fact, your, uh, uh, uh, sorry, what's the name of the single again? Is it up here, Jenna? No Time To Talk.

• 28:25Speaker 03

  No Time To Talk.

• 28:26Amy Poehler?

It's in my email, okay, I wanna play it.

• 28:27Speaker 03

You have it in your email?

• 28:28Amy Poehler?

Yes, it's so good! And it has a...

• 28:32Speaker 03

  It's an interpolation.

• 28:35Speaker 03

That's what they would do. So, crazy story with this song. Started writing it like seven years ago.

• 28:43Amy Poehler?

  Really?

• 28:44Speaker 03

And just assumed that it would never get cleared by...

• 28:46Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 28:47Speaker 03

The Bee Gees and Barry Gibb. And finally, top of this year, I pulled it back out of the, you know... Vault. The vault. And I was like, this, we need to finish this song.

• 28:58Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 28:58Speaker 03

This one's special. And so teamed up with Julie Minetta, who I started it with, who worked on a bunch of Sabrina Carpenter stuff last year, he's killing it, and Steph Jones to help finish the lyrics, and then, basically, we sent it to Mr. Gibb, who had come to shows with his family before, and, and just been the absolute best company and, and, um, really, you know, supported us early in our career and spent some time with our father and talked about the industry and all this stuff. So, we got word back within a couple days that it was approved and that they, they were excited about the song. It's like, we have a collab with The Bee Gees.

• 29:35Amy Poehler?

With Barry. I mean, the, uh, the, uh, The Bee Gees were really big growing up for me, and they were like very famous brothers who...

• 29:44Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:45Amy Poehler?

  Also, like you guys, had...

• 29:47Speaker 03

  Good hair.

• 29:48Amy Poehler?

  Great hair. Incredible hair.

• 29:51Speaker 03

  The flow.

• 29:51Amy Poehler?

Just incredible hair. And that's very cool that Barry was, he must have been excited about...

• 29:57Speaker 03

See, I mean, it's exciting for us. Interpolation.

• 30:00Amy Poehler?

  Interpolation.

• 30:01Speaker 03

So this, yeah, the song's just come out, very excited about it.

• 30:04Amy Poehler?

It's a really good driving song.

• 30:09Speaker 05

Off a new album, Greetings From Your Hometown. Oh, they gave you an old edit, too. You're listening to.

• 30:14Amy Poehler?

  This is an old edit?

• 30:15Speaker 05

Yeah, I mean, I guess, yeah. Use it. Yeah, we gave you an exclusive. Well, somebody was like, "I can't understand what you're saying, Joe." And I was like, "I can understand what I'm saying." And they're like, "Well, we can't. You have to rerecord it." So I had to rerecord it and...

• 30:29Amy Poehler?

On behalf of people that like short concerts...

• 30:33Speaker 05

  We didn't use it.

• 30:33Speaker 04

  We stick to the original.

• 30:34Speaker 05

Because, uh... Must have been off that email. It was not, it didn't sound as cool as when you were mumbling.

• 30:40Speaker 04

  When you were...

• 30:42Amy Poehler?

Okay, well, I'd like to know what you're saying because I can't understand it. And I want to sing along.

• 30:47Speaker 05

I'm saying side to side when your hands are up.

• 30:50Speaker 04

Joe does not know what he's singing.

• 30:52Amy Poehler?

Side to side when your hands are up.

• 30:56Speaker 04

You throw some babies in O's in there and it like works.

• 31:00Speaker 05

I was just re-listening to Cake By The Ocean the other day, actually. And it's also kind of hard to understand what you're saying there, but that worked out just fine.

• 31:07Amy Poehler?

Do you know what you're saying there?

• 31:11Speaker 04

Maybe that's another sign of a good song. If it's a mumbling, it's a worker.

• 31:15Speaker 05

Well, I think most people don't know.

• 31:16Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 31:16Speaker 05

I constantly will see people in the audience be like, "I'm a mumble, mumble, mumble." And then "Cake by the Ocean." That's usually how it goes.

• 31:24Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you're just going to get to there.

• 31:25Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 31:26Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 31:30Amy Poehler?

I think that flexibility, being able to pivot, and also having a good sense of humor about yourself is why it's longevity in the business. And I do feel like you all have that. You just have to keep pivoting, and you have to stay kind of flexible, and you have to have a good sense of humor about yourself. Did you learn any of that stuff when you were young? Because a lot of people that come to SNL, if they come from having experience at Disney, we would always say that what they knew how to do really well was work hard and be professional. Like, it is, to be professional is, it's a learned skill. People don't know how to necessarily show up to a set and figure out how to hit their mark, and like, how to be prepared. Like, those are learned skills.

• 34:20Amy Poehler?

And that was always the case with a lot of musicians who came through the show, who had that. Did you feel like you learned stuff like that there when you were there?

• 34:29Speaker 03

Definitely. The thing that Disney, and working with Disney on Camp Rock projects or our TV show...

• 34:34Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 34:36Speaker 03

What it really taught us was work ethic and the ability to be on a set. We had, you know, we'd never done anything on a film or TV set. And it's really good training ground. Now, it doesn't necessarily prepare you for like deep character work, but that's not really what it's there to do. It's really fun, entertaining stuff for a certain demographic. And I think, you know, in our, maybe in our like late teens, when we were sort of aging out of playing high schoolers and stuff, and then, you know, obviously in our twenties, there's that moment where you're kind of embarrassed by it, or you're like, oh, man, we're known for this thing. Thankfully, we've been able to, you know, make career moves and things where we can look back on that fondly. And I think it marks a chapter in, you know, our fans' life now who have grown up too.

• 35:21Speaker 03

And their kids are being introduced to it.

• 35:23Amy Poehler?

And those people, just like the song is for them, those people don't want to feel embarrassed about the stuff they used to like. I mean, that's the thing is like, we all, when we were younger, like really invested in things at that tender age and we cared about it. And you guys were around for a lot of people's tender ages. And now everyone's growing up together and it's like, why do we want to go back and be mean to the younger version of ourselves? Like, we're just trying to figure it out.

• 35:53Speaker 04

Guilty pleasure is a bad word in my house.

• 35:55Amy Poehler?

  Ooh, why?

• 35:56Speaker 03

  It's two words.

• 35:59Speaker 04

It's like, it's because it's like, you should be allowed, yeah, thanks. This is what, this is what I do with constantly.

• 36:04Speaker 03

  Got them, got them.

• 36:07Speaker 04

  Yes, Nick, it's two words.

• 36:08Speaker 03

Try to come back from that, bro.

• 36:10Amy Poehler?

Like, he's literally sweating, like, never gonna come back from that. You got this, eldest, here we go.

• 36:14Speaker 04

  It's been fun, thanks.

• 36:16Speaker 03

We're with you, guilty pleasure is a bad word. Guilty pleasure is a bad word.

• 36:18Speaker 04

Because it's, guilty pleasure is a bad word, because, words, uh, because it literally is.

• 36:24Speaker 03

  Defines who you are.

• 36:25Speaker 04

You could be, you should be allowed to like what you like.

• 36:27Amy Poehler?

  I totally agree.

• 36:28Speaker 03

I love it. I think it's fun to think about when you were a kid, the things that you're into and that you still love. And there was a season where you were like nervous about it. We used to go on our school bus with CDs and taped cassettes in our hands. And back then, you'd like kind of be shy to like show what you're listening to. Now it's like, through Spotify, you can listen to everything. And you're like, it's everywhere, which is nice. And it's not like a big deal that you're listening to.

• 36:51Speaker 05

This style of music and that style of music. And there's, you know, it goes into other weird things.

• 36:55Speaker 03

Also, in a totally different context, I was having this conversation with some people the other day, which is like, it's so hard to get anything made.

• 37:03Amy Poehler?

  Totally. Oh dude.

• 37:05Speaker 03

It's so difficult to get anything made, produced, put on a platform of any kind.

• 37:10Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 37:10Speaker 03

And it just feels like we don't have to use a blanket statement like it's objectively excellent. It can just be good to whoever is receiving it.

• 37:18Amy Poehler?

You're absolutely right. And also, don't you feel like now that you're like, you've spent 20 years making things? That you really are just, I mean, I find myself being way less, I mean, when you're a teenager in your twenties, there's a lot of black and white, like, I'll always, I'll never, that sucks, that's great. Totally. You're trying to figure out your taste and who you are. But as you get older, you do, and you, and if you're lucky enough to make things, you really do feel like, oh, there's something interesting there, and I like how that was made, and I know that was hard, and I can figure out that process. And I understand what they were trying to say there, but maybe it didn't hit there, like, you just understand the complexity of making things. Yeah, it's so different.

• 37:55Speaker 03

Can I put you in the hot seat for a second?

• 37:56Amy Poehler?

  Always.

• 37:57Speaker 03

I have a question about things that you, you've done, you did, that when you look back on, is there anything you like, in the moment, you're like, this is silly, and, you know, people are laughing, but did it feel like, uh, this is annoying, to be happy, doing this bit that they're enjoying, and I'm personally like, not loving it.

• 38:20Amy Poehler?

I know what you mean. Um, like, is this me?

• 38:23Speaker 03

That wasn't the most articulate way, yeah.

• 38:24Amy Poehler?

Yeah, like, is, yeah, I think like, especially as an actor, you know, you're worried that the way you enter the business will always be the way that you're seen in the business. And it's like, will I be typecast? Like, I, I remember when I first started, I was doing all these crazy characters. Like, I played this young sister of Conan O'Brien on, like, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, like, I was like, a nut. And then I would get cast a lot as just this like, you know, really like, intense person. And then I did a lot of movies and TV shows where I was an intense person with lots of energy, like, just kind of forcing people to do things. And I was good at it, I liked doing it, and, but then I would worry sometimes, am I just always playing this kind of person? Like, am I always going to be seen as this way?

• 39:09Amy Poehler?

And, um, you know, even just being like a, starting in sketch, like it was like, will people just always think of me as this kind of way? And just like you said, it started to become less the thing I worried about and more the thing I was just proud of. Because I learned so much from it. I got, I got to do so many things because of it. And as long as you believe that you are not limited, then you're not.

• 39:36Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 39:36Amy Poehler?

You don't have to, you know, it's basically just like, other people's opinion is none of your business.

• 39:42Speaker 03

  Totally.

• 39:42Amy Poehler?

It just takes a long time to get there, I think.

• 39:44Speaker 03

Actually, after I, I did SNL, uh, one time and, and they said, I mean, it was exactly what I needed to hear. It was one of the writers came and said, hey, just don't try to be funny.

• 39:57Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 39:57Speaker 03

And I was like, oh, that's, that like hurts in the moment, but then it's like, but that's so accurate. It's funny.

• 40:05Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 40:05Speaker 03

So you don't have to jam it to be funny. And it was like so freeing. And then I stopped worrying about like, am I being silly or am I being this? I'm just, you know, saying the words that are already funny.

• 40:16Amy Poehler?

That's the vibe I get from you guys is your confidence in just like goofing around and being funny. And I mean, it is, it is, it's just when you get out of your own head and you're just, but it takes some time, I think. I think it's like, that's, that's what comes with age.

• 40:31Speaker 03

Well, you're in my favorite movie ever. You know that.

• 40:33Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 40:35Speaker 03

  Our favorite.

• 40:35Speaker 04

He talks about it. They talk about it.

• 40:37Speaker 05

It's a framed poster that Nick has in his bathroom.

• 40:40Amy Poehler?

Okay, so I want to talk to you about something. So we do this thing at the beginning of each podcast where we talk to people who know our guest and we kind of talk well behind their backs. And we, and I, and I get to know the guest a little bit and I kind of prep for the guest with someone who knows them. So I talked to Jack McBrayer.

• 40:55Speaker 03

Okay, I was about to say.

• 40:56Speaker 04

  Ah.

• 40:56Speaker 03

Love Jack. He texted me yesterday.

• 40:58Speaker 04

  Loved him.

• 40:59Speaker 03

  That's great, yeah.

• 41:00Amy Poehler?

  And he's, you know.

• 41:01Speaker 03

I didn't tell me that you spoke to him.

• 41:02Speaker 04

I have a lot of friends, but there's only one Jack that sends a birthday video to you every year, no matter what.

• 41:07Amy Poehler?

No matter what, on your birthday.

• 41:09Speaker 04

And it's like, I have like people I see like every day that don't do that.

• 41:12Amy Poehler?

He, in fact, when we were talking, he said, I only have one birthday today. And I realized like, this is a full-time job to keep up with everybody.

• 41:18Speaker 04

  He's a, he's, it's a thing.

• 41:20Amy Poehler?

And people should know, we have the same birthday.

• 41:23Speaker 03

  We have the same birthday.

• 41:25Amy Poehler?

  September 16th.

• 41:27Speaker 03

  Same year, too.

• 41:27Amy Poehler?

  Molly Shannon, same year.

• 41:29Speaker 03

Molly Shannon, also has a same birthday. That's right.

• 41:32Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 41:33Speaker 03

You know, I set up her Instagram.

• 41:36Amy Poehler?

That's amazing. Tell us about that.

• 41:38Speaker 03

This is a real story. It's so bizarre. This is a great story. We were at Sundance Film Festival, like in 2016 or 17. And we end up at this bar, we're like having a few drinks, talking. She's like, "My daughter really thinks I should get on Instagram. Do you know how to do it?" I was like, "Yeah, give me your phone." And so I set up her thing and it's like the official superstar is her name.

• 41:57Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 41:58Speaker 03

Because we were like a few drinks in, just like, "What should we say your name is?" And it's like stuck. Yeah, I set up her.

• 42:04Amy Poehler?

That's cool. And that is a very...

• 42:07Speaker 03

And he still runs it. And he has the password still. She'll text him photos and videos, like, "Hey Nick, can you get this up in the next hour?"

• 42:13Amy Poehler?

And Nick's like, "I have two shows today. Like, I don't have time for this."

• 42:15Speaker 03

He's like, "Ugh, damn it Nick, get it up now."

• 42:20Amy Poehler?

So Jack is such, like, just loves you guys so much. And Jack and I laughed because during deep COVID, when no one was going out and everybody was wearing gloves and masks and meeting each other in the driveway, Jack came to my house to have me sign a "They Came Together" poster for you. Because he said it was your favorite.

• 42:43Speaker 03

Same as we do during COVID. Also, like, it's not like I'm, this isn't like a bit, like, it's legit, it brings me the most joy of any movie.

• 42:51Amy Poehler?

I love that movie. For people who don't know, Paul Rudd and I did a movie that David Wayne directed.

• 42:56Speaker 03

  So good.

• 42:56Amy Poehler?

That Michael Showalter and David Wayne wrote was a parody of a rom-com.

• 43:00Speaker 03

Yeah, and it's brilliant. Like, it's, I did a movie with Paul last year, which comes out either this, later this year or next year. And I, the first day on set, I was like, "I have to, like, just ask you how this happened, what's the story?" And he kind of gave me the lowdown, it was a table read or something, then, you know, you guys did the movie. But my point about it is like, it's not just one of those like hilarious quotable movies, it's really smart.

• 43:26Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 43:26Speaker 03

  And like, it makes...

• 43:28Speaker 05

I feel like it's a lot of the comedy that Tim Robinson's doing now, too.

• 43:30Speaker 03

Yeah, like, it's sort of ahead of its time. It's so good. And I do have the signed poster. And Jack didn't remember that he was in the movie. And then we're at a friend's house.

• 43:41Amy Poehler?

  What?

• 43:41Speaker 03

Hilarious. Glenn Powell's house with Corrie Street.

• 43:45Amy Poehler?

I heard. You guys are friends with Glenn Powell.

• 43:46Speaker 03

Yeah, and I'm like, "Have you guys ever seen 'They Came Together'?" And everyone's like, "No, let's watch it." And Jack's like, "Oh, I'm in this movie."

• 43:56Speaker 03

No, was that real or was that a Jack bit? No, I think he legit forgot that he was in the movie. He's super famous and he works a lot.

• 44:02Amy Poehler?

And he was in like playing basketball, he might have forgot.

• 44:04Speaker 03

  That scene is so good.

• 44:05Amy Poehler?

There's a hilarious scene in the movie where it's just, you know, it's that moment in every movie where the men are just trying to figure things out.

• 44:12Speaker 03

And each represent like a different point of view. I'm the married guy. I think you should stay with. Swish, swish.

• 44:19Amy Poehler?

They're basically talking about dating and they're just like speaking, you know, just saying their exposition out loud. Now, I'm the guy that doesn't think you should commit and they're playing terrible basketball.

• 44:33Speaker 03

It's so good. My other favorite scene is when you guys are sitting in the coffee shop. And he's like, "All right, I'm running on the phone" and you're like, "Let me try" and you can't do it. When you're ordering the coffee, that's the long thing.

• 44:46Amy Poehler?

We shot that in like 14 days.

• 44:48Speaker 03

Do you want to get a coffee with key? I know, I know the whole movie. It's so good. Wait up, would ya? That's my favorite bit. Hey, big brother, slow down. Max Greenfield's so good.

• 44:58Amy Poehler?

Okay, so Jack had a question, which is, which is so, is so cute. And so Jack, but his question was like, "What are y'all's conflict style?" Like, how do you, how do you figure out arguments?

• 45:10Speaker 03

  Between the three of us.

• 45:11Amy Poehler?

Yeah, like when you argue, some people like to withdraw, some people like to tease, some people like to argue, like how do you, what is your conflict style?

• 45:23Speaker 03

It's interesting. I feel like it ends up being,

• 45:28Speaker 03

it's, it's some combination of two people are fighting, the other is just like sitting back, watching and observing. That's usually how it is.

• 45:34Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 45:34Speaker 03

Or mediating. Playing referee or mediating. Or it's just like, go, go off, like do your thing. Like figure it out.

• 45:40Amy Poehler?

  Is anyone a yeller?

• 45:42Speaker 03

None of us are really yellers. We're, we can be like, reactive, defensive, reactive.

• 45:48Amy Poehler?

Anyone a punisher, like a silent treatment person?

• 45:52Speaker 05

  Nick a bit.

• 45:54Speaker 03

  A little bit, yeah.

• 45:55Speaker 04

I think that's sort of like a, maybe.

• 45:56Speaker 05

I think you're just trying to work through it.

• 45:58Speaker 03

Work through it, yeah. Not like, I'm not doing it on purpose.

• 46:00Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you're just like, I'm gonna go over here and work, and then I'll come back.

• 46:03Speaker 03

Yeah, and we'll talk through it.

• 46:04Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 46:05Speaker 04

I'm reactive. I've always been that way. I try to work on it all the time.

• 46:08Amy Poehler?

  Eldest.

• 46:09Speaker 04

  It's hard. It's my life.

• 46:11Amy Poehler?

You know, um, that, I wonder if that's.

• 46:13Speaker 03

  It's my struggle.

• 46:14Speaker 04

  It's my struggle.

• 46:14Speaker 05

  It's my life.

• 46:16Amy Poehler?

  So reactive.

• 46:16Speaker 04

  Thanks, Bonjo.

• 46:17Amy Poehler?

  Reactive.

• 46:18Speaker 04

Like, I, I just snap back. And I don't always mean what I'm saying.

• 46:21Amy Poehler?

Well, you have a tough job. It's very hard being.

• 46:23Speaker 04

Thank, thank you. I appreciate talking to you so much. It's so nice. Someone finally gets it.

• 46:26Amy Poehler?

  They don't understand.

• 46:27Speaker 04

No, I, I, I work on it. It's hard. But I also have a very, I have anticipatory anxiety about things.

• 46:33Speaker 05

  Big word.

• 46:34Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you're killing it on the words.

• 46:36Speaker 05

Yeah, you're all over the map today.

• 46:38Amy Poehler?

I'm right, so you're thinking ahead.

• 46:39Speaker 05

  Can't count words.

• 46:39Amy Poehler?

But that's because, I would argue, you're thinking ahead of like, you're just wanting to make sure like, um, I'm gonna future trip so I can be safe in the future.

• 46:47Speaker 04

That's exactly right. And I also, I think through it in the negative.

• 46:52Amy Poehler?

Okay. Cause I like a little bit of a catastrophizer.

• 46:55Speaker 04

Yeah, it's about, what would happen if I said this, and they're gonna react this way, and then I go this way. It's like, it's that.

• 46:59Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

• 47:01Speaker 04

So I'm dealing with it sometimes.

• 47:02Amy Poehler?

  I love that.

• 47:03Speaker 03

  You, you're a joy.

• 47:05Amy Poehler?

  The character.

• 47:06Speaker 03

Yeah, I'm literally just, I'm like, you're saying this, I'm like, oh my god.

• 47:10Speaker 04

  You're a joy. It's like, this is a script.

• 47:13Amy Poehler?

Was it when I said catastrophize your anxiety?

• 47:16Speaker 03

No, it's the whole way you broke that down, like, to protect yourself. I'm like, this is the plot for Inside Out 2.

• 47:21Amy Poehler?

  It's true.

• 47:22Speaker 03

  It's so good.

• 47:23Amy Poehler?

It's so true. It is so good.

• 47:24Speaker 05

  Inside Out 2 is insane.

• 47:26Amy Poehler?

  It's so good.

• 47:26Speaker 05

I watched it with my daughter, and we're both crying for different reasons.

• 47:30Speaker 04

  It's so good. It's incredible.

• 47:31Speaker 03

That's why it was like, you're in all my favorite movies.

• 47:33Speaker 04

Including my Subway commercials that I love. Thanks.

• 47:35Amy Poehler?

Thanks. Let's give a shout out to Subway while we can, and we'd love for them to give us lip.

• 47:38Speaker 04

I literally heard it this morning.

• 47:40Speaker 05

  Subway as in?

• 47:41Speaker 04

  Like the sandwich.

• 47:42Speaker 05

  Oh, is that, yeah.

• 47:42Speaker 04

  I, I, I, um, I heard it.

• 47:44Amy Poehler?

  The New York Subway.

• 47:44Speaker 04

  I heard it.

• 47:46Speaker 05

  New York City treasure.

• 47:46Amy Poehler?

I'm just trying to get the New York Subway up.

• 47:48Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 47:49Amy Poehler?

Give them a little bit of a boost.

• 47:50Speaker 04

  A little notoriety.

• 47:51Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 47:52Speaker 04

I heard you this morning, as I got out of the shower. I was like, I'm gonna see her later.

• 47:56Amy Poehler?

But there is something about, I have two sons. I think that relationship with brothers is really like, really beautiful and cool because exactly what we saw, we just see like in this hour is the way you gently tease each other, the way you kind of keep each other.

• 48:13Speaker 05

I got there. I think, oh, sorry.

• 48:15Amy Poehler?

Yeah, no, please, tell me what you think it is.

• 48:17Speaker 05

We had a superstar mom too, so that, we still do, but we.

• 48:19Amy Poehler?

Okay, what did she do that?

• 48:21Speaker 05

She, I mean, four boys in one home, she was the boss, you know, there's just, and also understanding how to be nice guys to women and, uh, growing up, just like, I think we needed a loud voice like her to be able to control us and also make sure that we weren't like a piece of shit. So, I think that was important, but I think also like, yeah, brothers are, boys are so different than girls. And it's like, I watch, like, I'll watch my kids on the playground and I'm like, it's like delicate and then this kid will be like, bah! And they dive off the top of a slide and you're just like, that is a boy.

• 48:59Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I mean, your frontal lobes close later.

• 49:02Speaker 05

I was just gonna say that.

• 49:03Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 49:07Speaker 04

His is still working on it.

• 49:08Amy Poehler?

Um, but, but, yeah, I mean, what is the best, I mean, I know you've been asked this a million times, it is, and it, what is the best thing about working with your brother? Like, being brothers, working together, what is the best part of it?

• 49:20Speaker 05

Um, there is a built-in safety net that, um, it's not to say you can't develop with friends and coworkers and all that, but, but they need nothing from me. I need nothing from them, but just real connection and love and, and respect and, and, um, we're, we're family, like, we're blood, so it's just, it hits different. It makes every high, super high, it makes every low, uh, a little easier to navigate and, and, you know, the mundane stuff in between becomes even more fun because you get to do it with, with two people that you not only love and respect, but you genuinely have a good time with.

• 49:57Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 49:58Speaker 05

You know, so that's, that's my feeling.

• 50:00Amy Poehler?

That's nice. I mean, I'm, I'm the same way, like, I like to fail or succeed with someone.

• 50:06Speaker 05

  Yeah, it is amazing.

• 50:08Amy Poehler?

Um, so, uh, last question. What are you guys listening to, watching, reading, playing, that makes you laugh these days in these like very difficult times where life is pretty rough and the world is, um, Hanging on by a thread.

• 50:28Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 50:28Amy Poehler?

What do you, what do you do to, to like check out or laugh or make yourself?

• 50:33Speaker 05

I really enjoyed the Four Seasons show.

• 50:35Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 50:36Speaker 05

  I liked that a lot.

• 50:37Amy Poehler?

Um, I interviewed Will Forte, um, on this pod, which, uh, and, um, Tina, I think they're like, I love watching them together.

• 50:45Speaker 05

  Yeah, it was great.

• 50:47Amy Poehler?

  So like cozy, cozy shows.

• 50:50Speaker 05

Yeah, that's not always my, I mean.

• 50:53Speaker 03

I love the studio. I thought that was so good.

• 50:54Speaker 05

  Studio was great.

• 50:55Speaker 03

  So funny.

• 50:55Amy Poehler?

  So funny.

• 50:56Speaker 03

It was so good. The last two episodes were ridiculous.

• 50:58Speaker 05

  The cast is insane, dude.

• 50:59Amy Poehler?

The cast is, Catherine is on another level.

• 51:03Speaker 05

  Oh, my God, so good.

• 51:04Amy Poehler?

  And Ike is incredible, too.

• 51:06Speaker 05

I, I've just been like, I restarted watching all of Nathan for You. Because I watched, I hit the rehearsal, which I think is just so brilliant.

• 51:13Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 51:13Speaker 05

  And messed up and insane.

• 51:15Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 51:15Speaker 05

And he finds the most interesting people. It's just so great. Did you watch the new season?

• 51:20Amy Poehler?

Of rehearsal? I'm watching it right now, the second season. Okay, so I, so.

• 51:24Speaker 05

  The woman that talks about.

• 51:25Amy Poehler?

  It gets me very stressed.

• 51:26Speaker 05

  Oh, of course.

• 51:27Speaker 03

  I couldn't do it.

• 51:27Amy Poehler?

And, um, yeah, I, I have.

• 51:30Speaker 05

  It's just.

• 51:31Amy Poehler?

There's like a mariner on thing where I get like very nervous.

• 51:35Speaker 05

He just will keep asking questions and he knows what he's up to. I was at a restaurant, restaurant recently and he, I saw him and I, I, when I see somebody that I really like, I think I love their work. I don't want to say hi, but I'll like, maybe can I send them a drink or maybe just whatever they're eating and whatever, can I send something? And I don't need to say hi. I'll sometimes try to leave before. And I saw him, I was like, oh, my God, like I love him. I have to like, I'm gonna send him, I sent him a drink, him and his friend. And about 30 minutes later, um, the waiter brought over a dollop of mayonnaise and handed it to me and they're like, this is from Nathan. And I look over and he goes, and he goes back to, and my friends are gate laughing so hard. I'm like, guys, he wants, don't laugh. He wants it so bad. And he was really kind of up and he walked over, he's like, did you get my gift?

• 52:23Speaker 05

The waiter said that she went to the chef and was like, she's like, I think I may have put my job on the line because I asked for a double mat and the chef was so mad, it's a pretty nice restaurant, was so mad, she's like, please, please, she's like, but I think both of you are really great and I just was like, this will be a story I can use forever.

• 52:42Amy Poehler?

Yeah, she did it, she did that, I'm glad, have we learned nothing from the bear? We need to give the customer what they want. Exactly.

• 52:49Speaker 05

  Exactly.

• 52:50Speaker 04

  Yes, chef.

• 52:51Amy Poehler?

Yes, chef, and what about you, Kev?

• 52:52Speaker 04

I am currently, me and my wife, we go through like, long form like sitcoms, like that have like 900 seasons, we just like started as like feel good, so we're in the middle of Big Bang Theory again.

• 53:02Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 53:03Speaker 04

  Just so good.

• 53:04Amy Poehler?

Love a rewatch, a simple rewatch.

• 53:05Speaker 04

Bye. Bye. Thank you Jonas Brothers, that was so great, Kevin, Joe, Nick, thank you for being here um, on a two show day, um, uh, and, and, and, and letting us hang with you and um, watching you hang with each other, it's, it's, you guys are a lot of fun and I really enjoyed this episode, and uh, now it's time for the special part of the show, the polar plunge, and this particular plunge is brought to you by Laneige and the Lip Sleeping Mask. Music and going to shows, and I just want to say again, if you're an artist putting your setlist together, cut it in half. We want the show to be shorter. Yes, there are great artists who have three-hour bodies of work that we should go and see and support. For the most part, my favorite show is a fast one. You know what I loved? I went to the Hollywood Bowl a couple of years ago in Los Angeles. I saw Billy Joel. The show was an hour and a half. We all sat down the entire time. And I sang all of his lyrics because he's easy to understand. So, thank you, Billy. Thank you to everybody who sat down. Let's just get that, let's normalize sitting down during shows. And thank you Jonas Brothers for all the shows
