• 0:42Amy Poehler?

They wrote an original play, Oh, Mary, which was a huge hit on Broadway and which gave them the Tony Award. And we're going to talk to them about a lot of things today, about struggling in New York City. We're going to talk about their love for Martha Stewart. And we're going to talk about what are they filling their days and nights with now that they've stepped away from their very famous play, which is still going on, by the way, and which depicts a very insane Mary Todd Lincoln with zero research. Highly recommend. Before we get started, though, we are going to check in with someone who knows Cole, who has a question for them. And that person is comedy legend, incredible performer, and just the funniest lady around,

Amy Sedaris. Amy, this is Amy.

• 2:19Amy Poehler?

Well, first of all, hi, thank you for doing this.

• 2:21Speaker 01

I'm sure happy to be doing this.

• 2:23Amy Poehler?

We're talking to Cole Escola today and your relationship with them is runs really deep and it's very special and I think a lot of people were very, very excited that they won the Tony and very excited to hear your name.

• 2:44Speaker 01

I was just as surprised. Yeah, that was so sweet of Cole to to mention my name. Maybe because they owe me $5,000. I don't know. Do you think now where you are in life, you could do Oh, Mary?

• 2:59Amy Poehler?

Me? Well, I was gonna say, why aren't you? You should do Oh, Mary.

• 3:03Speaker 01

I don't know if I have the energy anymore or that schedule. I don't think I could do it. You know, eight days a week. I mean, I'd like to for you lose weight, you get muscle. I mean, at that aspect, live audience, but man, that's a brutal schedule. That's for a young person.

• 3:21Amy Poehler?

I was just at someone's pool the other day and a little kid challenged us challenged us to all jump in at the same time and my ears are still ringing and it's just from jumping.

• 3:34Amy Poehler?

Jumping in a pool. I woke up this morning, it was like, oh, I have like swimmer's ear, everything hurts and all I did was just gently jump into a pool.

• 3:42Speaker 01

What did I do? What did I do? And then you're like, oh, wait a minute.

• 3:48Amy Poehler?

I know. I was I was thinking about you because I was thinking, I'm sure Cole would love for you to do Oh, Mary and you would be perfect in it. But I know that the schedule is wild.

• 3:58Speaker 01

It's too wild and the whole point would be to work with Cole.

• 4:03Speaker 01

I work really well with them and that's fun, too, to discover that. We work really well together.

• 4:09Amy Poehler?

I know. So tell me about it. I mean, I know a lot of people saw. Then played Chazzy on your show. So how did you start working together?

• 4:18Speaker 01

I saw Cole, uh, orange juice commercial on YouTube. And then I worked with Cole on your show, on Difficult People. And then I was just looking for a good neighbor. And I was like, it didn't matter, male, female. It's gotta be this person, it's gotta be Cole. And, you know, always came in prepared, always came in with lines in their back pocket. Uh, everyone loved Cole on set.

• 4:44Amy Poehler?

It makes perfect sense that you two love to work together and, and, you know, were drawn to each other like magnets. Because I think the same thing about you, Amy. Like, you're such a real artist and such a genuine.

• 4:58Amy Poehler?

For listeners, Amy just leaned really close into the camera. Got really, like a moth to a flame.

• 5:04Speaker 01

  Ping, ping.

• 5:05Amy Poehler?

  Nipples.

• 5:06Speaker 01

I guess it'd be ping, ping, down, yeah.

• 5:10Amy Poehler?

There's never been anything self, in my opinion, about you. Never been anything that feels self-conscious or even kind of aware of, um, what's kind of expected of you. And Cole is the same way. And because of it, your art feels so specific and satisfying and unique. Um, and.

• 5:28Speaker 01

Well, that's nice of you to say. Is that why I'm not working?

• 5:31Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm, yeah.

• 5:37Amy Poehler?

So you've never done a Broadway show?

• 5:40Speaker 01

  Uh, no.

• 5:41Amy Poehler?

  That's nuts.

• 5:42Speaker 01

I've never done Broadway. Off-Broadway I've done, but have you?

• 5:46Amy Poehler?

  No, no.

• 5:47Speaker 01

Okay, well, it sounds like we gotta do something.

• 5:49Amy Poehler?

  Oh, that would be fun.

• 5:50Speaker 01

  Write something for us.

• 5:52Amy Poehler?

Let's write something where it's just, it's a 45-minute show. It starts at 6:00 PM and we sit down the whole time.

• 5:58Speaker 01

In wheelchairs. Yeah, I'd watch that. Grab bars, speed rails, wheelchairs.

• 6:07Amy Poehler?

So, we've been asking people who know our guests, who are fans of our guests, to give me a question to ask them.

• 6:14Speaker 01

I mean, my joke question's always, if you could have anyone over dinner, dead or alive, what would you serve? Because then you could judge a person on what you would make for these people. But, um, and also, and I get interviewed a lot, they'll ask, like, what do we not know about you? And that's kind of hard, because one thing about Cole that I really admire, and also about young people, is they're so, you know, they'll tell you anything. You know, you ask them a question, they're so honest and open about it, you're like, oh my god, isn't that private? Or, you know, like, what, well, what don't we know about you, since you've been telling your whole life story? So that might, for me, it's I have high blood pressure, not high blood pressure, cholesterol. People would be surprised to know that about me. Um, I always say, Cole's an old soul, young spirit.

• 6:56Speaker 01

Um, I have that, the joke question, and the lesson. Oh, I was curious, after all this entire journey, like, if Cole had to write a memoir right now, like, what would the name of it be? Like, this is, this is a huge success story, don't you think?

• 7:12Amy Poehler?

Cole, that is such a great question. For people who are, um, wannabe performers, this, this story of Oh, Mary, the story of the show that Cole wrote, starred in, and then won the Tony, is what is the best version of writing something for yourself.

• 7:35Speaker 01

  Yes. Success story, yeah.

• 7:37Amy Poehler?

Yeah, success story. I wonder if there's gonna be a movie? If, it would be really, who would be good in the Oh, Mary movie? It would be like...

• 7:46Speaker 01

I say get Linda Hunt in there somewhere.

• 7:48Amy Poehler?

  Linda!

• 7:49Speaker 01

  I want more Linda Hunt.

• 7:51Amy Poehler?

Well, I am so fascinated by what's behind you in your apartment, because you have the best taste.

• 7:55Speaker 01

Well, I'm doing a photo shoot in here today.

• 7:57Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 7:58Speaker 01

That's my new miniature dollhouse, that I decided to have built into my fireplace. Because I have a lot of miniatures, and so, uh, just put that together last night.

• 8:08Amy Poehler?

What's your favorite miniature in that, behind you there?

• 8:11Speaker 01

Wheelchair, the wheelchair. It's well-made, it's handmade, it's beautiful crutches, uh, you know, that they don't make anymore, homemade, handmade umbrellas out of toothpicks.

• 8:21Amy Poehler?

  Ooh.

• 8:22Speaker 01

Yeah, I have a really nice collection. Bear skin rug.

• 8:30Amy Poehler?

Those are the only things you'd grab if there was a fire, that's it. Yes, you're right. Thanks, Amy. Thanks for your time. Thanks so much. Great to see you. Thank you. Cole, I'm so happy you're here. But I haven't seen you, I've obviously seen you on stage, and I've seen you on TV, and I've seen you everywhere, but I haven't seen you in person in a minute. How is it feeling having just finished your run? I know we're just catching you.

• 9:34Speaker 02

  It feels insane.

• 9:38Amy Poehler?

We kind of joke sometimes here about like, how we always talk about like, hard work, and acting is work and hard work. And in many ways, it's not that hard. This is not that hard.

• 9:47Speaker 02

  No.

• 9:48Amy Poehler?

But what you do is very hard.

• 9:50Speaker 02

Shows a week is really like, I used to think like, well, you have your days free.

• 9:57Amy Poehler?

  Totally.

• 9:57Speaker 02

Like, oh, come on. But I, um, I, I, I will never, I will never think that way about Broadway people or theater people ever again.

• 10:10Amy Poehler?

  It is the hardest job.

• 10:11Speaker 02

  So hard, so hard.

• 10:13Amy Poehler?

And the hardest part of your day is at the end of your day, so it's like, you can't even enjoy your day.

• 10:19Speaker 02

  Well, but I slept, I, I, I go to sleep at like 5:00 a.m.

• 10:23Amy Poehler?

Okay, talk to me about your sleep.

• 10:24Speaker 02

  Okay, so, um...

• 10:26Amy Poehler?

  I love talking about sleep.

• 10:26Speaker 02

I'm kind of weird. I'm like, one of those quirky kind of people. Um, I, no, I mean, I do the show. I'm like vibrating, hyper. I eat after the show. I have acid reflux, so I need to wait at least three hours. Which one's mine?

• 10:41Amy Poehler?

  Raise your hand.

• 10:42Speaker 02

Is this mine? Is this mine?

• 10:44Amy Poehler?

Yep. I just realized that I have that too, but I didn't really know what to call it, but it was like, oh, when I would be performing.

• 10:50Speaker 02

What's this burning in my throat? I hate that. Hmm, pass the marinara, please. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 10:59Amy Poehler?

So what did you have post-show? Was it a similar meal or different?

• 11:02Speaker 02

It was, you know, not a lot's open at like 10:00 PM. So it was either Indian food, which is great for acid reflux because it's very mild, you know.

• 11:18Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, just some cool spices.

• 11:19Speaker 02

Just some spicy cream sauces. Amy Sedaris always says, "Hot creamy meal, straight to bed."

• 11:30Speaker 02

So, yeah, that or like a bowl, like just slop. And the most chaotic bowl, just like adding ingredients, not considering what they will add up to.

• 11:42Amy Poehler?

Yeah, well, how they're gonna marry.

• 11:44Speaker 02

  I like oranges.

• 11:46Amy Poehler?

So you get your bowl or your food.

• 11:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:48Amy Poehler?

You eat and then you would then stay up till 5:00 in the morning?

• 11:51Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 11:52Amy Poehler?

Just like basically being on your phone, looking at TV?

• 11:54Speaker 02

Being on my phone, watching YouTube videos, Marco Polo-ing my friends. Do you use Marco Polo?

• 12:02Amy Poehler?

  Yes, I love Marco Polo.

• 12:04Speaker 02

  It's the best.

• 12:04Amy Poehler?

I thought that that was a Gen X thing, but millennials like Marco Polo?

• 12:07Speaker 02

Millennials are dipping their toes into Marco Polo. Gen Z could not be more, yeah.

• 12:13Amy Poehler?

  They're embarrassed.

• 12:14Speaker 02

They're embarrassed and Gen Alpha don't have phones. They're like, you're sick.

• 12:18Amy Poehler?

Their phones are in their heads.

• 12:18Speaker 02

  Yeah, exactly.

• 12:19Amy Poehler?

They're implanted in their heads, yeah. But I am like kind of obsessed with the fact that you have this open spaces, like your wide open space now.

• 12:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:28Amy Poehler?

What, what are you gonna do?

• 12:30Speaker 02

To be honest, I was really, I was really like, I got good hang on Monday. I'll just, that's my next, I'll get there and then we'll figure it out.

• 12:40Amy Poehler?

So, so there's a part of you that like wants that structure and you're gonna have to figure out how to structure?

• 12:46Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:46Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 12:46Speaker 02

I'm sort of, you know, like when you get off of a boat, for those of you that own boats.

• 12:54Amy Poehler?

All my audience, everyone, everyone listening owns a boat.

• 12:57Speaker 02

You know, when you get off your boat, or one of your boats, when you get off your biggest boat and you, you're like, you're wobbly, you're sea legs. That's how I feel.

• 13:07Amy Poehler?

I used to say that about SNL, like leaving SNL was like a train pulling away.

• 13:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 13:12Amy Poehler?

And you kind of like got all the gravel kicked up and it sped away and you could kind of hear the chatter and the laughter. And also, you were kind of like, like glad you weren't on the train.

• 13:23Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 13:24Amy Poehler?

  Both those things.

• 13:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 13:25Amy Poehler?

Because for people who don't know, Oh, Mary is continuing on without you.

• 13:28Speaker 02

  Yes. Titus Burgess starts tonight.

• 13:31Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 13:32Speaker 02

  Again, yeah.

• 13:33Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 13:33Speaker 02

He did it for three weeks, and now he's back for six.

• 13:37Amy Poehler?

  And then after that?

• 13:39Speaker 02

  Jinx Monsoon.

• 13:40Amy Poehler?

And then after that, you haven't announced yet?

• 13:42Speaker 02

  We don't even know yet.

• 13:43Amy Poehler?

So what is it like to create a character?

• 13:46Speaker 02

  Good.

• 13:47Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, great.

• 13:51Amy Poehler?

But I mean, how do you, do you pick who's gonna do it? And I'm sure you're at a point now where people are emailing you and saying, I would like to do it.

• 14:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:00Amy Poehler?

  Much, must be interesting.

• 14:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:02Amy Poehler?

I bet you're thinking about people who want to do it. What is that process like?

• 14:06Speaker 02

It was, uh, you know, the first, it, it really started after the first replacement, which was Betty Gilpin, who took this part and this job so seriously, like, trained for it, and, and, and like,

• 14:26Speaker 02

and I, I think people weren't lining up to take over the role yet because they wanted to sort of see like, how it would go if someone else did it. And she was like brave enough to be like, no, I know this would be like the role of a lifetime for me, so I want to jump at it. And she was incredible.

• 14:45Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 14:46Speaker 02

And it felt like really validating to watch,

• 14:50Speaker 02

I don't know, someone love the part.

• 14:53Amy Poehler?

Well, you're playing a, a version of Mary Todd Lincoln based on no research.

• 14:57Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 14:58Amy Poehler?

And it's this tour de force. It, that part allows whoever is playing it to like swing for the fences.

• 15:09Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 15:10Amy Poehler?

And it's what I love, if I may, what I love so much about it and loved, and I saw you, only you in it, but, and I can't wait to see more people in it. But what I loved about it is it was like this place where you could go really, really big.

• 15:23Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 15:24Amy Poehler?

But it was very, very moving.

• 15:26Speaker 02

  Oh, thanks.

• 15:27Amy Poehler?

  Really moving.

• 15:28Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 15:29Amy Poehler?

It's hard to do both of those things.

• 15:30Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 15:30Amy Poehler?

I think you do those things, both of those things really well together.

• 15:34Speaker 02

Thanks. I, yeah, I, I, that was my goal was like to

• 15:40Speaker 02

Like, I even wrote it on my dressing room mirror, like, can you love me if I'm annoying?

• 15:47Amy Poehler?

  Oh, that's good.

• 15:48Speaker 02

Yeah. Can you root for someone who's annoying? That's what I wanted, because, you know.

• 15:55Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 15:55Speaker 02

I'm sure you feel this way too, like, I'm annoying, you know? I'm too much.

• 16:01Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 16:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:03Amy Poehler?

That is, in fact, a friend of mine has a game where she says boring or annoying.

• 16:09Speaker 02

  Mmm.

• 16:10Amy Poehler?

So you categorize people into boring or annoying? Both are, no one wants to be either.

• 16:16Speaker 02

No one wants to be either. That's a good one.

• 16:19Amy Poehler?

  Give me annoying over boring.

• 16:20Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 16:21Amy Poehler?

  Any day.

• 16:22Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. Give me someone who tries too hard.

• 16:25Amy Poehler?

  Of course.

• 16:25Speaker 02

Yeah, absolutely, and I'm in the annoying camp, and.

• 16:30Amy Poehler?

So what I'm hearing is, because the show has ended, this is like an existential nightmare for you.

• 16:35Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 16:35Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, got it.

• 16:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:37Amy Poehler?

It would be for me too. It would be like, it's just like, what do I do with my day? What is my life? And you've hit, you hit the peak, you got the Tony, like, there's nowhere to go but down, babe.

• 16:46Speaker 02

I know. Truly, down, or like, across, like, leave the business.

• 16:51Amy Poehler?

  Across.

• 16:51Speaker 02

Yeah, across. Like, just jump in a river and.

• 16:55Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you're just gonna work with animals.

• 16:56Speaker 02

Change my name, yeah. Don't bring my phone.

• 17:01Speaker 02

  Like, burn my fingerprints off.

• 17:03Amy Poehler?

Did you feel, I hope you felt this way, but I know collectively, people that were watching you win.

• 17:09Speaker 02

Were really angry. They were, yeah.

• 17:12Amy Poehler?

I mean, there was rioting in the streets.

• 17:14Speaker 02

  Yeah, I saw.

• 17:15Amy Poehler?

It was like when the Eagles won the.

• 17:17Speaker 02

The what? Sorry, that's for the, for the guys, for the dads, for the dads who listen.

• 17:25Amy Poehler?

No, but you, but you, when you won, it felt like people, it felt like you were carrying the hopes and dreams of a lot of people.

• 17:35Speaker 02

  Okay, well.

• 17:36Amy Poehler?

Did you feel that pressure at all?

• 17:38Speaker 02

Not pressure, I felt like, um. The best part of the whole experience was like, people that I have been performing with for like 15 years, that like Joe's Pub, or the Duplex, or like, or people that came to see the shows, like, so happy for me. Like, that was the best feeling, like, I scored a goal for the team.

• 18:01Amy Poehler?

Yeah, everyone felt invested in it because they felt like they were part of it, and they saw it when it was smaller, and then getting bigger and growing, and it felt like this, like, you know, it was a rare combination, your show, Oh, Mary, of feeling indie and small and private and just for you, and the entire Broadway community and

• 18:22Amy Poehler?

the entire country coming and feeling the same way, too. It was a wild combo of both those things.

• 18:26Speaker 02

  The whole country came.

• 18:28Amy Poehler?

  The whole.

• 18:28Speaker 02

  We looked at the numbers.

• 18:29Amy Poehler?

  You looked at the numbers?

• 18:30Speaker 02

  Yeah. There was like four.

• 18:32Amy Poehler?

  Even like South Dakota?

• 18:33Speaker 02

Yeah, there were four people in South Dakota who, like.

• 18:36Amy Poehler?

  Said they were gonna come.

• 18:37Speaker 02

Yeah, and they still might. They still might, but, uh, yeah, now it's time to go away, I think.

• 18:44Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 18:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 18:45Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, take a little break.

• 18:46Speaker 02

Oh, I, like, if I'm sick of me, I can only imagine how my friends feel. I know that nobody actually knows who I am, but the people who do, they've had a lot of me this past year.

• 19:01Amy Poehler?

But I gotta say, you have handled it pitch perfect, Cole. Like, you've been so funny. Like, super funny. Like, self-deprecating, but not, like, falsely modest. You've been in, like, it really feels like you've been.

• 19:18Speaker 02

  Oh, thank you so much.

• 19:19Amy Poehler?

Feeling the mo. Oh, my god.

• 19:21Speaker 02

  I just, no, I'm.

• 19:22Amy Poehler?

  Now you're ruining it.

• 19:26Speaker 02

To work with people that you respect and, like, this is my job.

• 19:32Amy Poehler?

  I know, like.

• 19:32Speaker 02

I get to play. I get to play. I get to come here, and this is, this is my work, like, who am I to complain? I'm so lucky. I'm so lucky.

• 19:44Amy Poehler?

Like, I don't even remember who got nominated, like, the award is not the thing.

• 19:48Speaker 02

No, and we were like, we were all rooting for each other, you know?

• 19:53Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I mean, the best part has been getting to know people.

• 19:54Speaker 02

I actually hate, when they called my name, my heart broke. I thought George Clooney, like.

• 20:02Amy Poehler?

  Like, like my, my friend.

• 20:04Speaker 02

My friend, my friend George. Now he's going to Lake Como without this trophy.

• 20:11Amy Poehler?

  And that's.

• 20:12Speaker 02

And I get to have it, so I sent it to him. I sent it. I did.

• 20:16Amy Poehler?

  You did.

• 20:17Speaker 02

  I did.

• 20:17Amy Poehler?

And you sent it from the heart.

• 20:18Speaker 02

I sent it from the heart, or I sent him a picture of it.

• 20:20Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 20:21Speaker 02

  With my finger, yeah.

• 20:23Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you're not gonna give him the real.

• 20:24Speaker 02

  No, no, no.

• 20:25Amy Poehler?

No, he doesn't deserve it. He has too many. Um, and famous, you, you ran up there famously. You really hustled up there. Why?

• 20:33Speaker 02

They tell you, you have 90 seconds from when they call your name to the end of the speech.

• 20:38Amy Poehler?

  It's so crazy.

• 20:39Speaker 02

So, I was like, I wanna talk for as long as possible. That's my.

• 20:46Amy Poehler?

  That was your goal?

• 20:47Speaker 02

That was, it's always been my goal. Like, when I was a kid and they would ask, like, oh, what song do you wanna sing? I would sing The 12 Days of Christmas because it was the longest song that I knew. And, um, still the longest song. But, so, I, I was just like, well, I wanna be able to thank everyone that I had in my head 'cause I didn't write anything down stupidly.

• 21:09Amy Poehler?

Such a good speech. Such a good speech.

• 21:11Speaker 02

But I left so many people out.

• 21:13Amy Poehler?

But that's okay because what you did is, like, I think you learn a lot about somebody when they give a speech because to your point, you were aware of the time.

• 21:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 21:21Amy Poehler?

You were trying to use it to your advantage.

• 21:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 21:23Amy Poehler?

It's shocking to me how many people get up there and they go like, anyway. And you're like, time is ticking.

• 21:30Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 21:31Amy Poehler?

I can't believe you are taking so much time.

• 21:33Speaker 02

It's also that thing that, I think it was on this podcast that Tina said to you about like, that Steve Martin said, so this is like, you gotta kill every time.

• 21:43Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 21:43Speaker 02

  It's like, I, I do feel that.

• 21:45Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 21:46Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 21:46Amy Poehler?

You have to be funny and you have to be gracious, but you have to be, like, you have to produce that moment.

• 21:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 21:52Amy Poehler?

And you produced it really well.

• 21:54Speaker 02

Thanks. Played a good game and, uh, we just feel really good about where we're at right now, uh, numbers-wise. Um, just gotta stay in it and, um, hope for the best.

• 22:05Amy Poehler?

Now, I heard this straight, straight character you did on Colbert.

• 22:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:08Amy Poehler?

Do you have a straight, a straight woman my age voice?

• 22:13Speaker 02

  Your age? No, just older.

• 22:15Amy Poehler?

  Okay, like a boomer woman's?

• 22:17Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah, like my, like my mother.

• 22:19Amy Poehler?

Yeah, what is, what is that kind of character?

• 22:22Speaker 02

Well, I'm a little bit hoarse, so my voice is a little lower than I'd like it, but we were gonna go up Saturday and just see what Tracy and them were gonna cook and just sort of, just nothing.

• 22:43Amy Poehler?

For people who can't see, Cole is touching their head a lot.

• 22:47Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 22:48Amy Poehler?

And, and, and you're right, just a little aggrieved.

• 22:51Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 22:52Amy Poehler?

And a tiny, like a tiny headache.

• 22:53Speaker 02

Yeah, tiny. Tiny headache, just thinking about just like, talking, that's my favorite. I mean, when I was growing up, just hearing small talk between women at the store was my just heaven.

• 23:13Amy Poehler?

Well, you were raised primarily by women.

• 23:15Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, by my mother and my grandmother, and I loved my grandmother's friends and, you know, complaining about health issues.

• 23:24Amy Poehler?

Okay, but you grew up in Oregon.

• 23:26Speaker 02

  Thanks.

• 23:27Amy Poehler?

  And

• 23:29Amy Poehler?

and that's not, I'm not trying to make you feel bad.

• 23:34Amy Poehler?

No, you grew up in Oregon, you got into community theater, you made your way to New York.

• 23:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 23:38Amy Poehler?

What was like the fir-, like, can you just paint a picture of when you first arrived in New York City? How old?

• 23:46Speaker 02

Eighteen, yeah. I mean, fresh from my, like, hometown, you know, and then the first place I lived was the 92nd Street Y on the Upper East Side. Now imagine an eighteen-year-old little gay kid coming to New York City and that is their first impression of New York, the Upper East Side, thinking like, wow, I can't wait to have fun.

• 24:14Amy Poehler?

  Old men.

• 24:15Speaker 02

Old men, wow, oh, wow, these restaurants close at 6:00 PM, this is amazing. Yeah.

• 24:21Amy Poehler?

And what, why did you end up over there?

• 24:24Speaker 02

I went to, um, we can bleep the name of the school out.

• 24:27Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 24:29Speaker 02

Um, for one year, one calendar year. And their dorms were at the.

• 24:35Amy Poehler?

And why did you drop out of college?

• 24:37Speaker 02

Couldn't afford it. Like, I couldn't even afford to take out any more loans.

• 24:41Amy Poehler?

Was that, was that stressful? Were you thinking like, this is a nightmare that I can't?

• 24:46Speaker 02

I was heart, no, no, no, I was heartbroken. I was like, I didn't know how I was gonna get back to New York. Cause I sort of figured this out the first summer I came back home. I was working at a church camp with my brother, mowing lawns, digging post holes, washing dishes. And, um, and then I found out like, they're, they're not gonna give you any more loans. Cause you don't have, unless you have a guarantor.

• 25:15Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 25:16Speaker 02

And all the adults in my life were poor.

• 25:19Amy Poehler?

  Yep.

• 25:19Speaker 02

And I hated them for that. I was like, it was so juvenile to be like, well, maybe if you'd made better life choices, mom. I could live out my dreams. And now I'm like, thank God I don't have student loans.

• 25:35Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 25:35Speaker 02

I don't have student loans because I couldn't afford to go to school.

• 25:38Amy Poehler?

I mean, rejection is God's protection.

• 25:40Speaker 02

Thank you. You all, I love when you came up with that.

• 25:43Amy Poehler?

  I came up with that.

• 25:45Speaker 02

I remember when you came up with that.

• 25:47Amy Poehler?

What did you do though at nineteen then? You just worked hard and?

• 25:49Speaker 02

Yeah, I went, I worked at the Scholastic bookstore, playing Clifford the big red dog.

• 25:56Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 25:56Speaker 02

And, I mean, I worked at the cash register as well, but that was, I really came alive when I played Clifford.

• 26:04Speaker 02

  You know?

• 26:06Amy Poehler?

And you were living with who then? Like, were you like renting a room from someone?

• 26:09Speaker 02

Renting a room in, in a railroad apartment where a complete stranger had to walk through my room to get to his bedroom.

• 26:17Amy Poehler?

  Sure.

• 26:18Speaker 02

And often like my, I had like one season of Sex and the City on DVD. And he would always, I would, I was always missing one disc. And then it would appear back the next day and then it would disappear.

• 26:32Amy Poehler?

  Oh, he took it.

• 26:33Speaker 02

He took it. It was a straight guy and he was like jerking off to it.

• 26:36Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 26:37Speaker 02

  Cause of the sex scenes.

• 26:38Amy Poehler?

  Episodes.

• 26:40Speaker 02

And this was like, I mean, this was what year, 2008? So porn was available online.

• 26:48Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, he could have.

• 26:49Speaker 02

  But.

• 26:50Amy Poehler?

But there was just something about.

• 26:51Speaker 02

  Kim Cattrall, I guess.

• 26:53Amy Poehler?

Yeah, probably that. Hey, I get it.

• 26:55Speaker 02

  Hey, I get it.

• 26:56Amy Poehler?

  Hey, I get it.

• 26:57Speaker 02

  We both do.

• 26:58Amy Poehler?

We both get it. When did you first get paid to be an actor? I mean, other than Clifford, but.

• 27:04Speaker 02

Well, but my first paying job was when I was 11.

• 27:08Amy Poehler?

  Really?

• 27:09Speaker 02

I was in like a regional production of The Grapes of Wrath. I made $50.

• 27:16Amy Poehler?

  Total?

• 27:17Speaker 02

  Total.

• 27:17Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 27:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:18Amy Poehler?

  Yep.

• 27:19Speaker 02

  I played Winfield Joad.

• 27:20Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 27:21Speaker 02

I, my lines were, um, ma, ma, look over there.

• 27:28Amy Poehler?

  Great.

• 27:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:31Amy Poehler?

  That's, that's.

• 27:32Speaker 02

  $50.

• 27:32Amy Poehler?

  $50.

• 27:33Speaker 02

But I did come up with, um, um, I've said this already to Mo Rock, I'm sorry for those of you who's.

• 27:39Amy Poehler?

God, then we're gonna cut it. If you've already put it on Rocka.

• 27:45Speaker 02

But I think you'll appreciate this, at 11, I came up with, there's a scene where everyone's like saying grace over food. And I came up with stage business of like, opening my eye and stealing a piece of food.

• 27:57Amy Poehler?

Oh, my God, it's, I have a similar story, which is when I was about that age, 10 or 11, I was Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.

• 28:05Speaker 02

  Uh huh.

• 28:05Amy Poehler?

  And I have to.

• 28:07Speaker 02

Great comedic part, by the way. Hilarious.

• 28:10Amy Poehler?

  Hilarious.

• 28:10Speaker 02

  So many laughs.

• 28:12Amy Poehler?

And they, because it was the 80s, they just gave us a real dog. They were like, hold this real dog, you know, it was just someone's dog. And I had the dog the whole day and no one fed it and it was, and I would never do that now.

• 28:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:23Amy Poehler?

But someone just gave us a dog. I was 10. And there's a moment where Dorothy says like, where the tornado starts and Dorothy says, Toto, Toto, where are you?

• 28:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:33Amy Poehler?

And in the first show, I was holding Toto and I got a laugh, but not the kind I wanted.

• 28:38Speaker 02

  Right, right.

• 28:39Amy Poehler?

  They were laughing at me.

• 28:40Speaker 02

Yeah, and did you, and you clocked that right away?

• 28:42Amy Poehler?

  I clocked it.

• 28:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:43Amy Poehler?

So in the second show, I put the dog down and I walked a few feet away from him. And then I said, Toto, Toto, where are you? And everyone was like, now that's clever.

• 28:54Amy Poehler?

And it was like, a star is born. But it's so true, that feeling when you're like, wait, I can do something else. The mischief part.

• 29:02Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. Well, did you feel like, was there ever a time where you were like, well, I don't want to be an actor because it's not fun? Because the way I felt was like, oh, being a performer means, you know, acting school and doing our town. And I was like, I don't think that's for me. So I guess I don't want to perform.

• 29:26Amy Poehler?

Mm-hmm. I think, yeah, I didn't know anyone who was an actor. Or like, I didn't think it was a job that I could do. But I think even from a very early age, I was like, whatever I want to do, I want to be in control of it.

• 29:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 29:42Amy Poehler?

So like, I wasn't good at auditions.

• 29:45Speaker 02

  Yeah, same.

• 29:46Amy Poehler?

Because it was like, I don't know, if you don't.

• 29:48Speaker 02

No, I, whenever I get sides, I'm like, oh, you know who should get this?

• 29:52Amy Poehler?

  Exactly.

• 29:53Speaker 02

God. And I call my manager and I'm like, are they seeing Gideon for this? How about Taylor Trench? Because he would nail this.

• 30:04Speaker 02

And also, as a writer, I feel like, I don't, I need to know, I need to really trust the writer to, or like, feel like I really understand the writer. Because I think so much of acting, you have to be a little delusional and be like, oh yeah, I know how to do this.

• 30:26Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 30:26Speaker 02

I know what they're going for. When I read a script, I'm like, oh, I'd love to sit down with the writer and see, why now, why is she saying this?

• 30:34Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I know, you have to, you have to, yeah, you just have to kind of overcome insecurity and just assume that everyone is supposed to be looking at you.

• 30:42Speaker 02

Like, I actually know how to do this more than the writer knows.

• 30:45Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I struggle with it all the time about like, working for other.

• 30:49Speaker 02

We've, we've all witnessed that. We've watched you on sets sort of flounder.

• 30:57Speaker 02

We're all just like, oh, come on, girl, come on, come on. Oh, get those lines out.

• 31:03Amy Poehler?

It would be a great scene where you're acting and you pan to the other side of the monitor and everyone's like, girl.

• 31:08Speaker 02

  Sweating, sweating, sweating.

• 31:10Amy Poehler?

You're like, you can do it, girl.

• 31:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:17Amy Poehler?

• 33:55Amy Poehler?

We worked together on a show called Difficult People.

• 33:57Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 33:57Amy Poehler?

Speaking of great writers, Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner and Scott King, and we were all working together on a show, and that was a lot of fun.

• 34:06Speaker 02

That was so much fun. That was like, and that was a situation where like, I trusted Julie completely.

• 34:13Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 34:14Speaker 02

And like, the character was, I just got it immediately.

• 34:18Amy Poehler?

  And the character was?

• 34:19Speaker 02

  Matthew. This, basically, demon twink.

• 34:23Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 34:24Speaker 02

Um, yeah, full of himself, musical theater villain.

• 34:31Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 34:32Speaker 02

Like gay villain. In a way that like, like, the way that like, you said, oh, you understand, you have a love for, for women. Julie has a love for awful gay guys.

• 34:49Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 34:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:51Amy Poehler?

  Totally.

• 34:52Speaker 02

A deep love and respect for-

• 34:53Amy Poehler?

A deep love and respect, and she is so good at writing that those kind of characters that you, you know, you're kind of rooting for and also afraid of.

• 35:03Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 35:04Amy Poehler?

At the same time. Like, you don't want to leave the room while they're around.

• 35:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:07Amy Poehler?

  They'll destroy you.

• 35:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:10Amy Poehler?

Yeah, that was a really good experience.

• 35:12Speaker 02

  That was so fun, yeah.

• 35:13Amy Poehler?

And, um, and I feel like-

• 35:15Speaker 02

God, we had so many laughs.

• 35:19Speaker 02

This is what I'm saying, like, we just get to play.

• 35:21Amy Poehler?

  We get to play.

• 35:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:22Amy Poehler?

I mean, but it's also hard. It's hard work.

• 35:24Speaker 02

It is, but it's like so rewarding too, and it's like, like, when I think of, like, you know, like, where I came from and like, what my parents did to like, like, how dare I complain? You know, how dare I, you know?

• 35:39Amy Poehler?

And someone's like, ma'am, your coffee is ready. I'm just trying to hand you your coffee. I didn't, I just asked you if this was your coffee.

• 35:47Speaker 02

Thank you, I appreciate it. I won't be tipping, but thank you. Yeah.

• 35:51Amy Poehler?

Okay, so you have a, um...

• 35:53Speaker 02

You know who I heard doesn't tip? No, I'll tell you later.

• 35:55Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 35:55Speaker 02

  I'm just kidding.

• 35:57Amy Poehler?

Did you, have you ever waited tables?

• 35:59Speaker 02

  I was a...

• 36:00Amy Poehler?

Where you ever work in the restaurant industry?

• 36:00Speaker 02

  I was a bussar. And then I worked, I was a, I worked at a bakery. I was a counter person.

• 36:06Amy Poehler?

I feel like you would be very good front of house.

• 36:08Speaker 02

I'm not, because I don't, uh, well, I, so I also did sex work. Breaking news. And that was...

• 36:16Amy Poehler?

  And that's front of house.

• 36:17Speaker 02

That's front of house. That's all how, that's, that's front and back.

• 36:22Amy Poehler?

  Front and back of house.

• 36:22Speaker 02

  Of house.

• 36:24Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 36:25Speaker 02

  Yeah, price difference, but you...

• 36:29Speaker 02

What do you want? You want the front of house or the back of house tonight? Fifty, fifty bucks for the back of house.

• 36:35Amy Poehler?

And you'd do a whole thing where you'd pretend that they weren't, they didn't, you didn't have a reservation for them? And it'd be like, your name's not on the list.

• 36:41Speaker 02

  It's not on the list.

• 36:41Amy Poehler?

  Check again.

• 36:42Speaker 02

  Sorry, yeah.

• 36:43Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 36:44Speaker 02

Um, that was way, way, way, way less demoralizing than service job.

• 36:52Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 36:52Speaker 02

Like, because A, sex work, I was in control.

• 36:57Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 36:57Speaker 02

Like, I named my price. I, it was also like, the money for the time spent.

• 37:03Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 37:04Speaker 02

Way, you know, making a hundred dollars in an hour, and, you know, this was two, this was a different time, okay?

• 37:11Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 37:12Speaker 02

This was a long time ago. That was a lot of money back then, okay? That was a lot of money back then.

• 37:17Amy Poehler?

  This was pre-Tony.

• 37:18Speaker 02

This is pre-Tony, okay? So I couldn't charge what I could charge now. Now I could get it, easy, one forty.

• 37:25Amy Poehler?

  Of course, that Tony bump?

• 37:27Speaker 02

  Yeah, please, the Tony bump.

• 37:30Speaker 02

But like that versus making $10 an hour. Having people yell at you because their chocolate cake is dry.

• 37:41Amy Poehler?

What I'm learning is like control, creative control especially. Control of your time, structure is very important to you. And therefore you use all of those.

• 37:51Speaker 02

  I use people.

• 37:52Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 37:53Speaker 02

  Yeah, I use people.

• 37:55Amy Poehler?

That's the only thing we're gonna pull from this is you saying I use people. And we're gonna put it on a loop like a boomerang.

• 38:02Speaker 02

Just like keep injecting it throughout the whole episode.

• 38:06Amy Poehler?

  And why is that?

• 38:07Speaker 02

  Seven times.

• 38:08Amy Poehler?

I use people. It's gonna be like a Howard Stern clip that we play over and over again. That Fred presses a button and then it goes, I use people. No, but you took all the strengths to make the show that you made. Because it's like you created, I mean, it is so hard to write a show and you've done a few of them.

• 38:26Speaker 02

Yeah, I've been in New York for 20 years this year.

• 38:29Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 38:30Speaker 02

And I probably started writing and performing like my third year here, so.

• 38:35Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 38:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:36Amy Poehler?

  Yeah. I know, it's, it's.

• 38:39Speaker 02

And I just couldn't be more grateful for like, cuz that experience, it's like.

• 38:44Amy Poehler?

  We gotta go to commercial.

• 38:44Speaker 02

I look back on it, wait, wait, I just wanna say like, keep going, keep going. If you're out there and you're thinking, is it gonna happen for me? It will. It absolutely will.

• 38:57Amy Poehler?

Sir, we got your test results back.

• 39:00Amy Poehler?

And I've been trying to tell you.

• 39:03Speaker 02

  Thank you so much, yeah.

• 39:05Amy Poehler?

I need to, we really need you to see a doctor.

• 39:10Amy Poehler?

So I talked, so when you, when you thanked Amy Sedaris.

• 39:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:16Amy Poehler?

That was a big deal for a lot of people.

• 39:20Amy Poehler?

And it was, and you thanked many people in your speech. And for people that know Amy Sedaris's work, what it felt like was.

• 39:29Amy Poehler?

I can't explain it other than this genuine moment of a friend who was there for you. And you thanked a lot of your friends who were there for you for a long time.

• 39:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:38Amy Poehler?

That's really, it was really special to feel that.

• 39:41Speaker 02

Yeah, I really want, I thought like, who do I want to hear from the next day?

• 39:47Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 39:48Speaker 02

Like, who, like, like John and Claudia, like, all of my friends that I thanked were like, "What?" They sent me a picture of their jaws hanging open, like, "I can't believe you thanked me." But like, I, like, my friends are the most important people in my life. And I would, you know, what am I gonna like, you know, pull up some corny-ass teacher from?

• 40:16Amy Poehler?

  You've never had a teacher.

• 40:17Speaker 02

  Never had a teacher.

• 40:18Amy Poehler?

Not once. You've never had a teacher. You brag about that.

• 40:20Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 40:21Amy Poehler?

No, but, but also, you saying, that's so, that's so interesting that you say that. Who do you want to hear from? Because also, when you mentioned Amy and John and Jeffrey and Claudia, like, you're also like, sending a signal of like, "This is the kind of artist I am." Because those kind of artists, Amy specifically, Sedaris, you know, who, when I, when I came to Chicago, she was the senior, like, she was onstage.

• 40:45Speaker 02

  She was Queen B.

• 40:46Amy Poehler?

She was Queen B. And she, like you, had this true artist vibe, which was, like, they, they, they make commercial work that people will love, but they're making it for themselves. Like, there's not a feeling of, "What should we do that's gonna work or is interesting?" It's just like, "I just want to do what me and my friends will think is good." And we talked to Amy before this podcast.

• 41:12Speaker 02

Oh, boy. Let me have some Coke Zero.

• 41:15Amy Poehler?

And she loves you and talked about how thrilling it was to hear her name and how she was watching with everybody, and it was very exciting. And your appearances on her show were so stupid and funny.

• 41:30Speaker 02

  Yeah, thanks.

• 41:31Amy Poehler?

  Incredible wigs on that show.

• 41:33Speaker 02

Oh, my God. The best, yeah.

• 41:34Amy Poehler?

Amy is such an expert on wigs.

• 41:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:36Amy Poehler?

And I'm sure you are at this point, too.

• 41:39Speaker 02

  I've, I've given up a little bit.

• 41:41Amy Poehler?

Okay, okay. How, I'm sure you know how to put on your own wig. For people who don't know how to put on their own wig, what are some tips?

• 41:50Speaker 02

Honestly, some people just don't have a face for wigs.

• 41:55Speaker 02

And I have the perfect face for wigs.

• 41:57Amy Poehler?

You do have a great face for wigs.

• 41:58Speaker 02

  I'd, look, I'm not saying I'm stunning.

• 42:01Amy Poehler?

  You are stunning.

• 42:03Speaker 02

  But I'm not saying that.

• 42:04Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 42:05Speaker 02

  You said it.

• 42:05Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 42:06Speaker 02

I'm not saying, you know, I have a lot of faults. My teeth don't match. None of them look like they belong together. But my face is perfect for wigs, and I can admit that.

• 42:18Amy Poehler?

It is. Every single wig changes your face.

• 42:20Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 42:21Amy Poehler?

And every single time you put on a wig, it looks like-

• 42:24Speaker 02

I just feel lucky that I get to do it. Sorry.

• 42:30Amy Poehler?

  It's just, uh, it's play.

• 42:31Speaker 02

It's play. Like, it's my, my job is to play? Like, are you kidding?

• 42:37Amy Poehler?

Like, I show up? You're kidding me? Every day, I'm like, pinch me, like-

• 42:43Speaker 02

  Ew, ew, ew. Yeah.

• 42:48Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 42:48Speaker 02

  But-

• 42:49Amy Poehler?

  I mean, yeah, oh.

• 42:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:50Amy Poehler?

But, okay, so you do Amy's show.

• 42:52Speaker 02

  Uh huh.

• 42:53Amy Poehler?

You thank her at the Tonys.

• 42:55Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 42:55Amy Poehler?

And she had a couple of questions for you.

• 42:57Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 42:57Amy Poehler?

Great questions, of course, because it's Amy, a genius. She had two questions. The first one was, uh, if you could have a dinner party for anyone alive or dead,

• 43:07Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 43:08Amy Poehler?

  what would you serve?

• 43:14Speaker 02

  Um, I hate cooking.

• 43:16Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 43:18Speaker 02

  Well, I hate doing dishes.

• 43:20Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 43:21Speaker 02

And I'm also someone who, if the recipe says, like, it takes an hour and 15 minutes, I need four hours.

• 43:30Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 43:30Speaker 02

Because I'm, I'm taking, I'm doing every step, like, four times in my head, repeating it back to myself. Marco Polo-ing a friend, explaining it to them.

• 43:41Amy Poehler?

Taking notes on that Marco Polo.

• 43:42Speaker 02

Yeah, taking notes on that Marco Polo. Um, I would make, um, mashed potatoes.

• 43:50Amy Poehler?

  A big bowl of it.

• 43:51Speaker 02

  Big bowl of mashed potatoes.

• 43:53Amy Poehler?

And who would be at your dinner party?

• 43:55Speaker 02

  Um-

• 43:58Amy Poehler?

  I know it's a hard question.

• 43:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:59Amy Poehler?

The something about the alive or dead part.

• 44:01Speaker 02

Okay, Martha Stewart. Oh, but then I wouldn't want to.

• 44:04Amy Poehler?

But you'd want her when she was dead.

• 44:06Speaker 02

I would want her dead, yeah. Half-dead, dying.

• 44:09Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 44:09Speaker 02

I would want to serve cold mashed potatoes to dying Martha Stewart.

• 44:13Amy Poehler?

  That makes sense.

• 44:14Speaker 02

That's my dream dinner party. Her last bite, I would get to say like, you know, I served Martha her last bite.

• 44:21Amy Poehler?

Yes, and she was like, mm.

• 44:22Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 44:22Amy Poehler?

  Cold.

• 44:25Speaker 02

You know, she, I was obsessed with Martha as a child.

• 44:29Amy Poehler?

  Ooh.

• 44:30Speaker 02

I was, um, her, her show from the 90s.

• 44:34Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 44:34Speaker 02

You know, where it was like in her home.

• 44:36Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 44:36Speaker 02

And she would be like, while the pie's baking, let's retile the roof. It was like, she just assumed like, you can do it, there's time.

• 44:45Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 44:46Speaker 02

It takes 45 minutes for the pie, that's plenty of time for the roof. Get up there.

• 44:50Amy Poehler?

That's the best thing about WASP-y energy, which I never knew, growing up, I wasn't around it. And when I, when I was finally around it in college, I couldn't believe how much the women got done in a day.

• 45:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:03Amy Poehler?

It was a lot of mucking about and getting things done.

• 45:06Speaker 02

She's in a cranberry bog, you know, while her steak's marinating.

• 45:10Amy Poehler?

  Yeah. She's doing it.

• 45:12Speaker 02

She's really doing it. And then, but I would, I would, I was, I loved her show so much and I wanted to be like a Connecticut WASP, you know? But, um, I would spend all my birthday money on Christmas decorations.

• 45:26Amy Poehler?

  Mmm.

• 45:27Speaker 02

Because I wanted to, you know, copy her.

• 45:29Amy Poehler?

Because Christmas was the most important holiday for Martha.

• 45:31Speaker 02

Christmas is the most important holiday. But, um, I'm, I met her a year ago at this little dinner. And we were sitting, we were alone at a table, because no one else had sat down yet. And I'm like, don't talk to her, leave her alone. She doesn't need to know, you know, how much she means to you. And she just looks over at me and she goes, are you married?

• 45:58Speaker 02

And I was like, um, yeah. And she was like, I haven't seen the show yet, but I love history. And I'm dying to see the show. She hasn't come, but it's fine because that's, I have that. I have the memory of her looking at me from across the table and saying, are you married? It was like, yeah. Anyway, so yeah, that's to answer the question, I would serve her dying body.

• 46:27Amy Poehler?

Dying Martha, cold mashed potatoes. Do you, this leads me to this question, which is, you have, so many people have come to your show.

• 46:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 46:36Amy Poehler?

And you are a big fan of a lot of the people that came to your show. Who stands out as people that was like, wow, I can't believe they're here?

• 46:43Speaker 02

Well, Rosie O'Donnell was big for me because I would run home after school every day to watch her show. And that's like, that was my only avenue to seeing Broadway performers. Was her show, you know? That was big. Elaine May.

• 46:59Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 47:00Speaker 02

  That was huge.

• 47:04Speaker 02

That's it. Everyone else could fuck off for all I care. Get out of here.

• 47:08Amy Poehler?

  Get out of here.

• 47:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:10Amy Poehler?

But you would greet people after your show. So tiring.

• 47:13Speaker 02

  Oh, I love it.

• 47:14Amy Poehler?

  You do?

• 47:15Speaker 02

I do. I do. And maybe because I wrote it.

• 47:18Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 47:19Speaker 02

So it's like, it feels from me.

• 47:21Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 47:21Speaker 02

So it, maybe if I was just doing, just acting in someone else's show, I'd be like, can I please just go home?

• 47:29Amy Poehler?

I felt a little codependent when I got the chance to see you after your show. And I felt a little codependent about like taking up your time. Cause I just felt, I know, but you were so generous. And I was like, wow, Cole's being so generous with their time after the show. Because I just felt like, oh, you must be so tired. You'll have to get to bed. But now I know you had hours before you would sleep.

• 47:46Speaker 02

Hours before I would sleep. And also like, the thing, people after the show are like, I know you hear this a lot, but you're, I'm like, I don't, it's never enough. A, we're not performers because like, you know what? I'm fulfilled. I don't need any more validation at all. Now I just do it for you. No. And also like,

• 48:12Speaker 02

Every show, I'm, I'm working my ass off. Like, I, I wanna hear after every show, feedback, you know?

• 48:21Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 48:22Speaker 02

Yeah, and so I was, I would, I'm sure the stage manager and director were so sick of me. I would be like, just like, I would come offstage gasping for notes, being like, scene three. I know I didn't get there. I know I didn't get there, but I, I, I think I stuck the landing at four, right? They'd be like, yeah, it was a good, it was the show. It was the show. You've done it 500 times. It was just like the rest of them, but.

• 48:47Amy Poehler?

But that's the way to keep it fresh. It's like you're just constantly tweaking it, yeah. And, uh, the other question Amy Sedaris had was, if you were to write a memoir of your, you know, past year and a half, and you had to title it Today, what would it be called?

• 49:04Speaker 02

  Enough Already.

• 49:10Amy Poehler?

  Enough!

• 49:11Speaker 02

Enough Already: My Year on Broadway, The Hard Way.

• 49:16Speaker 02

A Story of Love and Redemption.

• 49:20Amy Poehler?

  Keep going.

• 49:21Speaker 02

Through the Eyes of Someone Who's Seen It All and Lived to Talk About It. Or.

• 49:29Amy Poehler?

  Or Slash.

• 49:32Amy Poehler?

  Enough Already.

• 49:34Speaker 02

  Bits and Bobs.

• 49:38Amy Poehler?

Okay, I have a few quick lightning round questions to ask.

• 49:40Speaker 02

  Uh huh.

• 49:41Amy Poehler?

Okay. What is your, um, uh, and this is just fun, these are just, this is just.

• 49:46Speaker 02

These are just for fun. Okay, I can relax now.

• 49:50Amy Poehler?

  So that was very serious.

• 49:52Speaker 02

  Yeah, I felt really.

• 49:53Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 49:54Speaker 02

  Sick.

• 49:54Amy Poehler?

Yeah, the, the earlier stuff we do have to send to the government, but this, we can just keep for ourselves.

• 50:00Speaker 02

Oh, they're, honey, too late, they're listening.

• 50:03Amy Poehler?

Well, let me ask you this, have you ever sent the wrong text?

• 50:06Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 50:08Amy Poehler?

  It's the worst nightmare.

• 50:09Speaker 02

I've sent, there was someone that I had a crush on, who I was very attracted to. And I went to send a picture of him to my friend.

• 50:18Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 50:19Speaker 02

But instead, I sent him a picture of himself.

• 50:22Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 50:24Speaker 02

  And then quickly.

• 50:27Speaker 02

Was like, I think I said something like, I love this shirt. Where'd you get it? Just sweating bullets. Yeah.

• 50:38Amy Poehler?

Oh, yeah. Have you ever sent a screenshot of a convo? Similarly, like a screenshot and then sent it to the person?

• 50:46Speaker 02

No, no, I don't think I've done that. I've almost done that. And, you know, I've definitely heard tell.

• 50:53Amy Poehler?

  And I-

• 50:54Speaker 02

  Have you done that?

• 50:54Amy Poehler?

Yes, and I've tried to cover it by being like, can you see this? I said, I think saying, wait, can you, can you read this? As if something, as if something was wrong with my phone and I was testing my phone.

• 51:09Speaker 02

Well, now I know, you gotta cut this out because, yeah. Eight of your friends right now are like-

• 51:14Amy Poehler?

  Can you see this picture?

• 51:15Speaker 02

That bitch, I really thought she was go-

• 51:17Amy Poehler?

And they're like, yeah, I do. And you're like, oh, good, because my phone has been weird and I'm trying to figure out if my pic- if my screenshots work.

• 51:24Speaker 02

  Anyway, let's get lunch, please.

• 51:26Amy Poehler?

Anyway, love you, love you. Great to see you. So happy you're back with that guy.

• 51:31Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 51:32Amy Poehler?

Okay, so what is your go-to, do you use eBay?

• 51:37Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 51:37Amy Poehler?

What's your go-to search term? What do you search eBay for?

• 51:42Speaker 02

I guess my most used word is vintage. Yeah, or I'll just type in an actress's name and then sort by price highest first.

• 51:52Amy Poehler?

To get the highest item first?

• 51:54Speaker 02

Yeah, because that's what's gonna be, you know, like, oh, this was her couch.

• 51:58Amy Poehler?

  That's smart.

• 51:59Speaker 02

That's how I've, you know, I have Marlena Dietrich's library card.

• 52:03Amy Poehler?

  You do?

• 52:03Speaker 02

Yes. I've talked about this, I told Mo, I told, you know this, Amy, come on.

• 52:10Amy Poehler?

  You already told Mo this.

• 52:11Speaker 02

  I told, I told everyone.

• 52:14Amy Poehler?

And, by the way, that reminds me, beautiful homage to Bernadette Peters.

• 52:19Speaker 02

  Oh, thanks.

• 52:19Amy Poehler?

You dress beautiful, beautiful, and you heard from Bernadette, yes?

• 52:22Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, and that was the most-

• 52:25Amy Poehler?

  What did she say?

• 52:25Speaker 02

Beautiful I've ever felt. She said, I thought they looked absolutely lovely, although when I wore it, I wore my chest hairs in a different pattern.

• 52:36Amy Poehler?

  Perfect.

• 52:36Speaker 02

But more importantly, congrats, Cole, on the Tony. Yeah.

• 52:39Amy Poehler?

  What a class act.

• 52:40Speaker 02

  Very class act.

• 52:41Amy Poehler?

How, why is Bernadette Peters important to you?

• 52:45Speaker 02

I mean, as a kid, she just was Broadway, you know? Like, and-

• 52:51Speaker 02

I don't know, uh, just, I just, she's, she's show business, you know?

• 52:59Amy Poehler?

My dad used to say, like, make a joke, he'd be like, "The only person I would leave your mother for is Bernadette Peters."

• 53:05Speaker 02

  That's, I, I, now, the term a little-

• 53:08Amy Poehler?

And I'm like, "Why are you telling me this?"

• 53:13Amy Poehler?

  This is weird.

• 53:15Amy Poehler?

You're picking me up for my soccer game.

• 53:18Speaker 02

Like, not letting you, like, putting his hand on the door before you, like, you're about to leave, he's like, "Wait." "The only person I would leave your mother for is Bernadette Peters." "Have a good day at school." You're like, "I'm six."

• 53:33Amy Poehler?

"I'm six. I'm trying to go to sleep. You're whispering this, you're whispering this into my ear."

• 53:40Speaker 02

Julie Klausner is the one that I first heard the term, um, "A Little Something for the Dads." When she was doing, on her podcast, a Tonys recap of Aladdin. Uh, Aladdin had performed at the Tonys and, you know, they had the, sort of like, you know, the girls, sort of like, shimmying and she said like, "Oh, you know, a little something for the dads." To show like, "Hey, Broadway's not just for, you know, the women and those gay guys. We got a little something for you too, fellas." And I feel like Bernadette is, you know, she's got a little something for the dads.

• 54:12Amy Poehler?

Uh, she has a little something for the dads. She does. It works for the dads. Gorgeous. Okay. But, uh-

• 54:19Speaker 02

  Sorry, lightning round.

• 54:20Amy Poehler?

Yeah, lightning rounds. Sorry. Start not doing this fast enough.

• 54:23Speaker 02

  No, me.

• 54:23Amy Poehler?

If you could cast a modern day politician as Mary Todd Lincoln, who would it be?

• 54:29Speaker 02

  Lindsey Graham.

• 54:32Speaker 02

Would probably, you know, he'd probably learn a lot about himself.

• 54:39Amy Poehler?

  That's right.

• 54:42Speaker 02

He might, like, wake up and be like-

• 54:44Amy Poehler?

It would hard to get him.

• 54:45Speaker 02

"Oh my god." Is that what he sounds like?

• 54:48Amy Poehler?

  Yeah. "Oh my god."

• 54:49Speaker 02

  "Oh my god."

• 54:51Amy Poehler?

"Oh my god, Mary." That's what he would call it.

• 54:54Speaker 02

  "I've been so bad."

• 54:57Speaker 02

  I'm sure sorry, everybody.

• 55:01Speaker 02

You know, playing this part has taught me that it's not okay to judge, lest ye be judged.

• 55:10Amy Poehler?

  I've been so bad.

• 55:11Speaker 02

  I've been so bad.

• 55:12Amy Poehler?

I better quit, but I'm not gonna. I extended my run. I'm so bad. I hope I don't get spanked for it.

• 55:22Speaker 02

I bet one of you, uh, men better not spank me, and I better not pay you to do it.

• 55:29Amy Poehler?

And I don't like to be chased either before I say, okay. Um, who would, uh, what about, what about a famous act, uh, who would play the, the, uh, the role of Oh Mary in a, in a dramatic film?

• 55:44Amy Poehler?

I'm sure you've thought about this. I bet there's talks about making a movie.

• 55:48Speaker 02

If there are, honey, I'm out of it. I'm out of it.

• 55:51Amy Poehler?

Amy Sedaris suggested, uh, Linda Hunt.

• 55:54Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.

• 55:56Amy Poehler?

  Right?

• 55:56Speaker 02

  Linda Hunt. Absolutely.

• 55:58Amy Poehler?

  Incredible.

• 55:59Speaker 02

Yeah. Cherry Jones could do it.

• 56:01Amy Poehler?

  Oh, Cherry Jones. Cherry Jones.

• 56:03Speaker 02

She could play Lincoln, too. That would be really chilling.

• 56:06Amy Poehler?

She would be amazing as Lincoln.

• 56:07Speaker 02

  Or, yeah, a Muppet.

• 56:09Amy Poehler?

  Or a Muppet.

• 56:10Speaker 02

Miss Piggy. As Mary Todd Lincoln, and then everyone else is human.

• 56:15Amy Poehler?

  That's a great idea.

• 56:16Speaker 02

Yeah. Actually, cut this, because I'm gonna, um, I'm gonna be, I'm talking to Disney tomorrow.

• 56:20Amy Poehler?

I know someone, it's not Disney. Is it Disney?

• 56:22Speaker 02

  I think they're Disney now.

• 56:24Amy Poehler?

The Muppet, Disney on the Muppet.

• 56:25Speaker 02

Guys, can we look that up?

• 56:27Amy Poehler?

I hope they had good lawyers, because those Muppets don't know what they're signing.

• 56:30Speaker 02

  No, I don't, yeah. Boo.

• 56:38Amy Poehler?

That's the one that you turned on.

• 56:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 56:39Amy Poehler?

Okay. Do you believe in psychics? Do you go to psychics? Have you ever had a psychic tell you anything that came true?

• 56:45Speaker 02

I, I, I, I always quasi-believe astrology and all that sort of stuff.

• 56:52Amy Poehler?

  So what do you sign?

• 56:53Speaker 02

  I actually don't believe it.

• 56:54Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 56:55Speaker 02

  I'm a Sagittarius.

• 56:56Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 56:56Speaker 02

  Virgo moon.

• 56:57Amy Poehler?

  Ah.

• 56:58Speaker 02

  Gemini, rising.

• 56:59Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 57:00Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 57:00Amy Poehler?

I, I don't know much about it either, but I am a Virgo. That's my sun sign.

• 57:05Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 57:06Amy Poehler?

  And...

• 57:07Speaker 02

You don't know you're rising in your moon.

• 57:07Amy Poehler?

  My rising is Aquarius.

• 57:09Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 57:09Amy Poehler?

  And my moon is Leo.

• 57:11Speaker 02

Of course. Of course. Had to go there.

• 57:17Amy Poehler?

  Favorite New York restaurant?

• 57:19Speaker 02

  Ooh, Uncle Gino's.

• 57:21Amy Poehler?

  Is that real?

• 57:22Speaker 02

  No.

• 57:31Speaker 02

Sunday, 5pm before the dinner rush, getting that corner table at Uncle Gino's.

• 57:38Amy Poehler?

  And ask for Gino.

• 57:39Speaker 02

Ask for Gino. Ask, yeah, he's always there.

• 57:42Amy Poehler?

  He's always.

• 57:43Speaker 02

  He's always there, Sundays, early.

• 57:45Amy Poehler?

  Get there early.

• 57:46Speaker 02

Get the corner table and just sit and people watch. I love to just sit and have, and eat my pasta and just sort of people watch. Cause you know, actors, we absorb, sorry. ABCV, ABCV is my real answer.

• 57:59Amy Poehler?

  Okay, great. What is that?

• 58:01Speaker 02

It's the, you know ABC Kitchen?

• 58:03Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 58:04Speaker 02

They have a vegetarian vegan restaurant.

• 58:06Amy Poehler?

  Are you vegan?

• 58:07Speaker 02

I am, I was vegan and then I started eating eggs last year cause I was so hungry from the shows.

• 58:14Amy Poehler?

Yeah, of course. You need your protein.

• 58:16Speaker 02

I was, for some reason, I was just craving eggs like a snake.

• 58:19Amy Poehler?

You're lucky you're not a 50 year old woman because we need like 47 grams of protein a day.

• 58:25Speaker 02

Do you really? Or else your bones just like crumble?

• 58:28Amy Poehler?

You turn into a bag of dusty bones. We have to eat 45 eggs a day.

• 58:33Speaker 02

  Oh my god.

• 58:33Amy Poehler?

And then lastly, if you had to choose just one cult to be in, what would you, how would you design your cult? And what would be your?

• 58:40Speaker 02

Like if I was the cult leader?

• 58:42Amy Poehler?

Well, great question. Would you like to be in it? Or would you like to lead it?

• 58:44Speaker 02

I would like to be like the, the first lady of the cult.

• 58:47Amy Poehler?

The Sheila to the Bog one.

• 58:48Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 58:49Amy Poehler?

You'd like to be the lieutenant.

• 58:51Speaker 02

  Yeah, the Mary Todd Lincoln.

• 58:53Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 58:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 58:54Amy Poehler?

And you'd like to keep like promoting the, the cult leader and being like, they're really important. You have, you have to pay, you'd be like.

• 59:01Speaker 02

The one who's doing all the work.

• 59:02Amy Poehler?

Hypeing. You'd do all the, you'd have all the power.

• 59:04Speaker 02

With no, yeah, all the power, but no glory. Sort of just behind the scenes being like, we got him. You know, like in the back of a black car.

• 59:12Amy Poehler?

I mean, I always love those cult documentaries where the, the second in command is talking to us about how incredible the cult leader is. And then they finally reveal the cult leader. And you're like, huh.

• 59:24Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, like Jared?

• 59:28Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, Jared.

• 59:29Speaker 02

  Jared?

• 59:29Amy Poehler?

Jared, that's the, that's the guy we're talking about? Like the, like they're, they're always described as very charismatic and like hypnotizing. And then the picture is just like a guy.

• 59:38Speaker 02

I mean, I guess those people are like agents essentially, being like.

• 59:41Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, they're the hype.

• 59:42Speaker 02

  You're gonna, oh my god.

• 59:43Amy Poehler?

  You're gonna love him.

• 59:44Speaker 02

Oh god, he's so hot. Just wait.

• 59:49Amy Poehler?

And then the last question is for today. What are you, okay, you've got free time. You're, you've got, you're gonna have to put some structure in your life now, moving forward. Um, I'm not gonna ask you what's next.

• 1:00:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:00:03Amy Poehler?

Cause I feel like it's too soon.

• 1:00:05Speaker 02

Yeah, I, I just don't know, you know?

• 1:00:08Amy Poehler?

But I wanna know, what are you watching, listening, reading? And what are you doing?

• 1:00:13Speaker 02

  My kids.

• 1:00:14Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 1:00:15Speaker 02

Oh, no, not doing, I mean, listening, sorry.

• 1:00:18Amy Poehler?

  You're reading your kids?

• 1:00:19Speaker 02

Can we cut that? I'm reading my kids. Listening to my kids. I just wanna focus on my kids.

• 1:00:27Amy Poehler?

I'm listening to my kids. I'm having dinner with my kids. I finally get to have dinner with my kids.

• 1:00:30Speaker 02

I get, I get to just be a mom. Which is the most important role.

• 1:00:34Amy Poehler?

  It's the most important job.

• 1:00:35Speaker 02

No, but, sorry, what am I watching, listening to?

• 1:00:38Amy Poehler?

What do you, what do you do, what makes you laugh? Cause you are, you are so funny and you have so many funny friends. And like, you're like, what do you, what do you laugh at?

• 1:00:48Speaker 02

Uh, really, just my, my friends, like, I wait for them to make me laugh on Marco Polo. John Early does this bit where he will send me a Marco Polo as if he's meaning to send a message to someone else.

• 1:01:03Speaker 02

But he, but it's this elaborate thing where it's like he's secretly planning with all of the rest of my friends to kill and cook and eat me.

• 1:01:14Speaker 02

Like, like, uh, you know, like, you know, before the Tonys will send like a message being like, okay, so, hi Claudia, um, so Cole Foley thinks they're going to the Tonys.

• 1:01:28Speaker 02

So that's fine. I am a little worried about getting them out of the dress, just in terms of grilling. It'll be hard, you know, like, stuff like that.

• 1:01:37Amy Poehler?

  That is so fun.

• 1:01:38Speaker 02

Makes me laugh so hard every time and it, it.

• 1:01:42Amy Poehler?

Complicated bit, a fun, complicated bit. And it goes to show like what you said earlier, which is like, your friends love you.

• 1:01:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:49Amy Poehler?

  You love your friends.

• 1:01:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:51Amy Poehler?

And you guys can deeply tease each other.

• 1:01:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:53Amy Poehler?

Like, that's, that to me is like a big love language.

• 1:01:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:57Amy Poehler?

And it goes to show that like you're very safe around each other.

• 1:02:00Speaker 02

Yeah, and we, it's just playing. Sorry, I'm sorry. We'll be right back.

• 1:02:05Amy Poehler?

There's no, there's, we're not on the air.

• 1:02:07Speaker 02

  All right.

• 1:02:07Amy Poehler?

We're not on the air, this isn't live.

• 1:02:09Speaker 02

  Mark, back to you.

• 1:02:12Amy Poehler?

Anyway, that's been Cole's Call, and Mark, thank you. How's it going out there, Mark? How's the weather? Are you doing okay during the hurricane? People should know, by the way, it's like 102 degrees today.

• 1:02:22Speaker 02

I know, and I'm in flannel.

• 1:02:24Amy Poehler?

You're in long princely, princely-like flannel.

• 1:02:30Amy Poehler?

Cole, thank you so much for doing this.

• 1:02:32Speaker 02

  Thank you for having me.

• 1:02:33Amy Poehler?

It was so fun. Thank you so, and congratulations on your huge success.

• 1:02:37Speaker 02

I thought you were gonna say huge boner. Sorry, cut that out.

• 1:02:42Amy Poehler?

We can't. We, it was in a part in the tape where we have to make it a sound clip. And it's, I use people and huge boner. Yeah, we have to make it another sound clip. I'm so sorry.

• 1:02:54Speaker 02

  It's all right. Thanks.

• 1:02:57Amy Poehler?

That was so great. Thank you, Cole. That was so fun and funny. And it's just, for this polar plunge, I just wanna point you towards more Cola Scola content because there is so much funny stuff on YouTube, whether it's the orange juice commercial that me and Amy Sedaris and Cole referenced, or it's the serial killer documentary, fake videos that Cole made with Jeffrey Self and others. And, and just, there's so much content that they've made over the years that is so funny and stupid and weird, and so many different wigs. And they have a face for all of them.

• 1:03:40Amy Poehler?

So, uh, uh, check that out and thank you so much for listening to this episode and every episode, and thank you so much for listening in general and for being so nice. Okay, bye.

• 1:04:17Amy Poehler?
