• 0:45Amy Poehler?

We're going to talk about so many good things today. We're going to talk about him being a California kid and growing up in the Bay Area. We're going to talk about the Lonely Island writing process, what it was like in those late nights, making those digital shorts. We're going to discuss how ASMR is always a little pervy, but somehow we like it. And, you know, we're going to just get into it like we always do here. We even have a gotcha question. We even have one gotcha question, so listen for that. But in the meantime, I'm going to start my, um, my episode like I always do by checking in with someone who knows Andy and wants to talk well behind his back and give me a question to ask. And joining me now is the great Seth Meyers.

• 1:30Amy Poehler?

Seth, where are you? How are you? Can you hear me? This episode of Good Hang is presented by Walmart. School supplies, we all remember getting them. I remember Trapper Keepers and so many colored pens. But now I'm sure there's a million more things to get. And thankfully, Walmart has essential back to school supplies starting at 25 cents. Plus, all the latest tech starting at $9. Who knew? Hello Kitty pencil cases, Nintendo notebooks, food shaped erasers, Chromebooks, keyboards, and more at low Walmart prices. They even have Lilo and Stitch headphones. Who knew? Shop Walmart.com to score their favorite back to school tech and supplies.

• 2:22Amy Poehler?

I'm so grateful that you did that podcast. Thank you so much Seth. It was nice to have you here in the studio and it's nice to talk to you. And where are you right now?

• 2:31Speaker 01

I'm in my little New York City studio.

• 2:34Amy Poehler?

Oh, you have your own little studio.

• 2:36Speaker 01

Yeah, and I'm realizing I'm not hearing you through my headphones, so I'm gonna take them off. This is nice though, because I also think my hair looks its best right after I take off the headphones.

• 2:44Amy Poehler?

Speaking of weird hair, we've got a guest with a great head of hair today.

• 2:49Speaker 01

Great head of hair. And probably, you know, certainly he's, you know what? I'm, who are we? We're gonna be a couple of fogies say he had weird hair when he first showed up on the scene. And people love that hair. It was a, it was a, it was a magnet for good times.

• 3:03Amy Poehler?

Both him and you, I feel like I've seen a million versions of like SNL bedhead, which is like just, you know, because as we talked about, like, one thing that comes to mind with Andy that I do want to talk to him about is his relationship to sleep because he loves sleep.

• 3:21Speaker 01

Loves sleep. He wrote an update feature once and he couldn't decide if he was gonna call it the kid who just woke up or bedhead Jones.

• 3:30Amy Poehler?

And I feel like we've seen him so, you know, so often just kind of being like so exhausted.

• 3:38Speaker 01

And I think he found a perfect soulmate because I think they're a couple of little nocturnal meerkat or whatever nocturnal animal is.

• 3:46Amy Poehler?

Because his beautiful wife Joanna is a musician and, you know, as far as I can tell, that means you get up at 7:00 PM.

• 3:54Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, there's no, no good harp inspirations happening before noon.

• 4:00Amy Poehler?

No, you know how hard those harps party. They party, they harp all night.

• 4:04Speaker 01

They party harp, as you like to say.

• 4:06Amy Poehler?

Wow, very good. Okay, so Andy Samberg, and you, you guys have a very special relationship. For people that don't know, what, what is your relationship like?

• 4:17Speaker 01

Well, it's actually, I would like to use it as a jumping off point for what I want you to ask him about because I have a very fraternal relationship with him and I don't think I'm alone. I think Andy's friendships are very fraternal with people. And I don't quite know where that comes from. I know he is a younger brother and I think he's sort of a quintessential, he's sort of America's younger brother.

• 4:41Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 4:42Speaker 01

I think the minute we all laid eyes on him, he felt like a younger brother to us in a way that was very endearing. And I kind of want to know, like, how his, like, real life as a younger brother informed who he was. Two older sisters, like, what was the feedback he was getting from them? Were they delighted by him? Were they a good audience? Were his parents a good audience? Because, you know, as older siblings, you and I know that the younger siblings get a lot more, you know, easier audience.

• 5:10Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 5:12Speaker 01

  Free ride in life.

• 5:13Amy Poehler?

  Free ride. Everything is easier.

• 5:16Speaker 01

But he, you know, with that said, Andy does nothing the easy way. I've always said, like, he showed up and I thought, oh, my God, this guy is so sophomoric. And then I realize now that he has a PhD in sophomore comedy. Like, nobody approaches what they do with, like, more integrity and intelligence than he does. But, like, I'm very curious about, like, his younger brother DNA and what he thinks it adds to his approach to things.

• 5:45Amy Poehler?

It's a great question, because you're right. I think he's a juxtaposition between feeling very, like, loose and goofy, but when we've all, we've all had the chance to work with him, and he's very serious when he works.

• 5:58Speaker 01

Yeah, and I would say he's almost never, he's very opposed to taking, like, the first idea. Like, he'll really, he really wants to dig through them all before he, he moves forward with something. And I'm very, I think maybe, I think our improv bones sometimes are very enamored with the first ideas. And those guys are like, no, let's not take the easy way out. And it certainly shows in their work. And then, just a couple of things, this is me just, like, talking behind his back. We were, we were trying to schedule a Lonely Island podcast today, and when we found out he was doing this instead, he said, blame Seth. This is what he said on the text chain about doing Good Hang, blame Seth.

• 6:44Speaker 01

She's his friend. So somehow it's you, it's my fault that he's doing your podcast because you and I are friends. Not because he's friends with you.

• 6:52Amy Poehler?

There is nothing I love more in your podcast than hearing the scheduling and how it never works.

• 7:00Speaker 01

  It's awful. It's awful.

• 7:01Amy Poehler?

Gives me such agita to, you know, I love a good schedule. I love a good system. And when I hear the way people don't know that they're recording, it makes me, I just feel like, and everyone's showing up and they're like, it's today. I just am like, what? I love it. I want to know everything about it.

• 7:19Speaker 01

Three, the amount like a cup of coffee can completely change their personalities. They would not have, they would not have lasted, Lonely Island would not have lasted long in pioneer times. They're like, oh.

• 7:31Speaker 01

Also, uh, I just, just for fun, you know, he hates my dog, Sandberg.

• 7:36Amy Poehler?

Yeah, that's a running, I was gonna say joke, but it feels real.

• 7:39Speaker 01

No, he really hates my dog. So I, you don't have to do this, but I invite you to say, I asked Seth for a question, but he couldn't talk today because his dog just died and just see if he has any reaction. But you have to play it, you have to play it real. He has been stressing to me a lot recently. He likes dogs. It's really, it's not, it's just my dog.

• 7:59Amy Poehler?

Why, when did that start? By the way, why does he hate Frisbee?

• 8:02Speaker 01

He met Frisbee when Frisbee was, uh, like, we'd had Frisbee for two weeks and he just immediately said, that dog looks like a rat and he has not come off at once.

• 8:14Speaker 01

In fact, I think we put Frisbee in his lap and he like went, uh, and she just fell on the floor.

• 8:23Speaker 01

I love him so much, Polar.

• 8:24Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 8:26Speaker 01

He is, um, it's a, it's, you know, I'm, again, we talked, uh, you can hear all about it on my episode of Good Hang, but I love being friends with people, but he's a different kind of friend. He's just, I, he just really feels like a brother and I'm just so lucky. Oh, here we go. Oh, Waterworks Jones.

• 8:41Amy Poehler?

  There he goes.

• 8:45Speaker 02

Oh, but look at this. Look what we have in my podcast studio. We're not making people wait there.

• 8:50Amy Poehler?

I have it too, but I have my logo on it.

• 8:55Amy Poehler?

  Just in case.

• 8:56Speaker 02

Oh, you see, that's you know, you know. You put your logo on.

• 9:00Amy Poehler?

We call these Seth's tissues now. All right. Love you, Seth. Thank you so much for doing this.

• 9:06Speaker 02

Love you. Give him my love too.

• 9:07Amy Poehler?

I will. Okay. See you soon. Bye bud. This episode is brought to you by Volkswagen. Ever look at something and think, wow, must be nice? Yeah, same. But here's the thing. The 2025 Volkswagen T-Quan makes all that really nice stuff totally within reach. It's got that elevated look, a seriously luxe interior with features like massaging front seats and real wood accents. Because let's be honest, nice things shouldn't just be for people named Chadwick. Visit VW.com to learn more about the 2025 Volkswagen T-Quan. Hi bud. Thank you for doing this.

• 9:48Speaker 02

  Please.

• 9:48Amy Poehler?

  Come on.

• 9:49Speaker 02

Soon as you, as soon as they said you were doing one, I was like, well, I'll be on that.

• 9:52Amy Poehler?

I was thinking about today, like getting ready for today. And it was like, it was a really good feeling. First of all, because I love doing the show, but I was just like, oh, the fact that I get to just hang out with you and talk to you and you are the kind of person that just when I think about what I would talk about with you, it just feels very nice and very relaxed.

• 10:13Speaker 02

Could not be more with you.

• 10:15Amy Poehler?

Do you know what I mean? Like, I know it's not gonna be, there's no gotchas.

• 10:19Speaker 02

  Not a lot of push.

• 10:19Amy Poehler?

  Well, maybe one gotcha.

• 10:21Speaker 02

Hit me with one gotcha today.

• 10:23Amy Poehler?

  Okay, I'll get one gotcha.

• 10:24Speaker 02

Think whatever gotcha you ask, I have to answer. Is that the rule?

• 10:27Amy Poehler?

  Okay. Yeah, one gotcha.

• 10:28Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 10:29Amy Poehler?

  One gotcha per app.

• 10:30Speaker 02

Oh my God, I can't believe I'm on the hook for a gotcha.

• 10:34Amy Poehler?

  Andy Samberg.

• 10:36Speaker 02

  Oh no.

• 10:37Amy Poehler?

  What can you see?

• 10:38Speaker 02

  I have a tiny stain.

• 10:39Amy Poehler?

  Oh my God, a stain.

• 10:43Speaker 02

I jokingly, half jokingly said, if you can see a stain, you have to run in here like Dustin Hoffman at the end of The Graduate.

• 10:51Amy Poehler?

Got listeners, for people listening, there was a little bit of a stain. Okay, so Andy's taking his shirt off. This is his thing he does where he goes, oh, there's a stain. And then he takes his shirt off.

• 11:01Speaker 02

Oh, have I been hitting the gym?

• 11:05Speaker 02

  All right, I forgot.

• 11:06Amy Poehler?

Thank you, ladies. There's two women who came in here.

• 11:08Speaker 02

  Thanks, guys.

• 11:09Amy Poehler?

  Who are on Andy's team.

• 11:10Speaker 02

  Those are my sisters.

• 11:11Amy Poehler?

Oh, my God. It's so funny that you're talking about your sisters because that's what I wanted to start with.

• 11:18Speaker 02

Oh, perfect. Are we started? Are we commenced?

• 11:20Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, we've commenced.

• 11:20Speaker 02

  Wonderful.

• 11:21Amy Poehler?

Um, because I don't think a lot of people know that you are the younger brother of two older sisters.

• 11:27Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 11:28Amy Poehler?

And in many ways, you give off little brother vibes.

• 11:30Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 11:32Amy Poehler?

  Thank you. You like that.

• 11:33Speaker 02

  I do like it.

• 11:33Amy Poehler?

Okay, what do you like about that? That description of you?

• 11:36Speaker 02

It just is me, so it makes sense to me when I feel seen when people are like, you have little brother vibes. I'm like, you're correct.

• 11:44Amy Poehler?

What was it? What are your sisters like and what kind of like dynamic is in your family?

• 11:48Speaker 02

eldest sister, very extroverted. Middle sister, introverted. I had a great relationship with both of them. I loved growing up with them. A very goofy, silly sibling vibe.

• 12:01Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 12:02Speaker 02

And now we all have kids and are adults and it's insane.

• 12:06Amy Poehler?

And what were like, what are the pros of being a little brother to two sisters, to two young women?

• 12:12Speaker 02

Oh, man. You don't get beat up.

• 12:15Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, right.

• 12:16Speaker 02

Which is great. Like so many of my dude friends are like, oh, man, my brother used to beat my ass. And in like, not in a like properly abusive way, but where they'll be like, you know, I was always a little scared he was gonna like sock me or something. And I'm just like, yeah, I never had to deal with that at all. And also, I mean, I've talked about this before, but like, in my life, I have found when I meet other guys that have older sisters, we immediately get along. There's just a different level of ease for me with that energy. I don't know how to explain it.

• 12:48Amy Poehler?

Who do you know that has older sisters?

• 12:50Speaker 02

  Matt Murray, Panther.

• 12:51Amy Poehler?

Matt Murray, Panther, a great SNL writer who we love.

• 12:54Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 12:54Amy Poehler?

You're absolutely right. He's has the vibe of someone who's been. Taken gentle care of.

• 13:00Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 13:01Amy Poehler?

  And likes women.

• 13:03Speaker 02

Yeah, truly. I mean, obviously, you would hope for everyone to be able to be okay in any situation. Like, I grew up with a lot of girls who were just my friends. In a very easy way, and it didn't have to be like, are we gonna hook up? Like, and I feel like a lot of my guy friends back then, it was, if they didn't have sisters for some reason, those guys, it was more of a thing.

• 13:28Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Did you have, were you friends with your sister's friends?

• 13:31Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. I mean, I was in love with all of them.

• 13:33Amy Poehler?

You were in love with them? I didn't want to say, but that's what I imagined.

• 13:35Speaker 02

I was. I was. And also friends.

• 13:37Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 13:37Speaker 02

But when you're younger and they're like in the house and they're all like, so pretty.

• 13:41Amy Poehler?

And they're like laughing, they're like laughing and throwing their arm around you like, Candy.

• 13:45Speaker 02

You're so silly. And I'm just like, I'll marry you right now.

• 13:50Amy Poehler?

And you were 11 and you wanted to just marry them?

• 13:52Speaker 02

Yeah. They're so, and they're all being nice and they're like, well, it's Dara's brother, so we have to be nice.

• 13:57Amy Poehler?

So people who didn't know, who don't know you or the, like, where you're from, where did you grow up? Tell us about your fam.

• 14:03Speaker 02

  Grew up in Berkeley, California.

• 14:05Amy Poehler?

  Oh, yeah.

• 14:06Speaker 02

Bay all day. My parents are both from New York. They moved out to the Northern Calif, to the Northern California in summer of 70. They missed Summer of Love by a year. Maybe on purpose.

• 14:23Amy Poehler?

Well, I do think it's interesting because you and the Lonely Island bandmates, Yorimar, Tacony, and Akiva Schaefer, both have like, East Coast hippie parents that came out here.

• 14:38Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 14:39Amy Poehler?

  All of you do, right?

• 14:39Speaker 02

And we found each other. It is strange. We're all Northern California raised by New York parents.

• 14:46Amy Poehler?

Why did your parents move out here? Why do you think?

• 14:48Speaker 02

I think it was just happening out here.

• 14:50Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 14:50Speaker 02

I mean, it was kind of the... The Summer of runoff, I guess. It was just a, there was a huge migration of quote unquote, let's say hippies.

• 15:01Amy Poehler?

I know, but that's probably the wrong word to use, right?

• 15:03Speaker 02

  At this point.

• 15:04Amy Poehler?

  What word would you use?

• 15:04Speaker 02

I mean, they were, let's, they had, my dad had long hair and was like, I'm getting out of here. You know, like me and Margie, we're heading west, you know? It definitely was that kind of energy, but it was also like, we got nothing going on. We heard there's people, you know, having some like comfortable places to sleep out on the west coast. So I think it just brought them out here and then once you get here, it's hard to go back. Cause it's so laid back and mellow.

• 15:29Amy Poehler?

I, I, and you know, we, we don't have to revisit if you don't want to, but I loved your, your episode of who, who do you think you are? So you think you can dance?

• 15:38Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 15:38Amy Poehler?

  Where are you from?

• 15:39Speaker 02

  The PBS one?

• 15:40Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 15:40Speaker 02

  Finding your roots.

• 15:41Amy Poehler?

  Finding your roots.

• 15:41Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 15:42Amy Poehler?

  That's the serious one, sorry.

• 15:43Speaker 02

I mean, I don't know the difference, but they, that's what I asked.

• 15:46Amy Poehler?

It was so good and so, for people that didn't see it, you were looking kind of hoping to help your mom find her birth father.

• 15:55Speaker 02

  Both parents.

• 15:56Amy Poehler?

  Both parents.

• 15:57Speaker 02

My mom was adopted. By the way, after I did that show, this is just an aside, I watched it with Yorin and Mari in New York. Cause I was doing press in New York or something.

• 16:06Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 16:06Speaker 02

And we, when it aired, it showed my mom's like adoption agency that she was adopted from. And it's the place from three identical strangers.

• 16:17Speaker 02

So like, and we were like, that's why we could never find the records and find anything about it. Cause they like disappeared it.

• 16:23Amy Poehler?

  No way.

• 16:24Speaker 02

Yes. So that's where my mom was adopted from.

• 16:27Amy Poehler?

  Not, not a great rep.

• 16:29Speaker 02

  No.

• 16:31Amy Poehler?

  Whoa.

• 16:32Speaker 02

So basically, yeah, sorry. The backstory on it is I have sort of avoided doing stuff like that.

• 16:37Amy Poehler?

  Sure.

• 16:38Speaker 02

But then they asked, and it is a super great reputable show. And I asked my mom, I was like, there's a chance if I do this, they could figure out who your birth parents are. Do you want me to do it? Knowing like, I might be on TV finding out some horrible thing about our family history and what her origin was and all that. And she was just like, it would be worth it to me. I still want to know. So I did it and they just smashed it. Like we showed it, she came with me the day that we shot it. And when we walked in, they were all like, there she is. Like they were all like starstruck by her because they knew what they were about to drop on her. It was going to change her life and it was this amazing team of people. Uh, and what came out of it was they found out who both her parents were.

• 17:23Speaker 02

Uh, and now we're in touch with both sides of her family.

• 17:28Amy Poehler?

  No way.

• 17:29Speaker 02

She has like four half siblings on her father's side. And then like a couple of first cousins still with us and their families on her mother's side. And the craziest thing about it by far, that's like from a movie that I get still still talking about. Is once she connected with both, both sides of the families, they both unbeknownst to each other, went looking through her biological parents' old stuff they still had. And they both found the same photograph of the two of them together.

• 18:01Amy Poehler?

  But they both had.

• 18:02Speaker 02

They both had the picture of them together when they had their like brief time together.

• 18:07Amy Poehler?

Oh no, that makes me want to cry.

• 18:09Speaker 02

  Isn't that crazy?

• 18:11Amy Poehler?

They had a brief, so your mom's parents had like a brief relationship.

• 18:15Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 18:16Amy Poehler?

And then a baby that they gave up for adoption.

• 18:17Speaker 02

Yes, and we don't know if the, if her father even knew.

• 18:21Amy Poehler?

Right. And they went on to marry other people and have other kids.

• 18:25Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 18:25Amy Poehler?

They kept the same picture of.

• 18:27Speaker 02

Yes, from like a date in San Francisco. Also, another crazy thing, which was that they had met in the Bay area and then my mom moved there.

• 18:35Amy Poehler?

Yes, there was something that wanted her to come back. Whoa.

• 18:37Speaker 02

There were so many weird trippy things about it.

• 18:39Amy Poehler?

I love that kind of stuff. That just feels so like life has some kind of grand design. Yeah.

• 18:45Speaker 02

It was really beautiful and she was so happy and now we have like, oh yeah, we, we all look like our grandparents.

• 18:52Amy Poehler?

Well, I loved, I remember that your grandfather, the big reveal was that you're a tally.

• 18:58Speaker 02

Yes, exactly. And did I tell you this story that I went back to Brooklyn, I was shooting Brooklyn Nine-Nine at the time and all the crew and everyone knew I was doing it. And I came back in on Monday because we did it over the weekend. And all the camera guys and the crew guys were like, so? And I was like, I'm a quarter Cecilia and they all went, ayy.

• 19:21Speaker 02

Like, every part of it was like from a movie. It was so awesome and wonderful.

• 19:26Amy Poehler?

  Oh, my god.

• 19:27Speaker 02

They're like, "Ah, welcome, my son."

• 19:29Amy Poehler?

Do you feel, Andy, do you feel different knowing that?

• 19:32Speaker 02

I do feel a little different, yeah. I mean, we always were like, there's something that's not just like, "Buh-hey," you know?

• 19:42Speaker 02

But, but yeah, it was crazy. And for my mom especially, it was just like, you know, she was at this time probably 75, 76 years old, she had given up. She was like, "I'm gonna go my whole life not ever knowing."

• 19:53Amy Poehler?

Oh, Andy, that's awesome. That's an amazing story. And that idea, the idea that they both kept the photos is very deep.

• 20:01Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 20:02Amy Poehler?

Because it feels like they, it's like a time travel moment. Where their future selves planted that photo, you know, like, that's a real time travel shit.

• 20:13Speaker 02

I've thought about it a lot, because it's so special and it does like feel written.

• 20:17Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 20:17Speaker 02

And the only thing I can, there's, I have a few theories. One is like, they thought maybe someday this exact thing would happen and they wanted her to find them.

• 20:28Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 20:28Speaker 02

  You know?

• 20:29Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 20:29Speaker 02

If he did know about her.

• 20:31Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 20:31Speaker 02

And if not, it's just that maybe they both really enjoyed their time together and it was like, you know?

• 20:36Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 20:37Speaker 02

You don't like wipe your old relationships from social media. You keep them because they were special to you at that time.

• 20:41Amy Poehler?

Yeah, yeah. You mentioned Brooklyn Eye Nine, Jake, and now I'm realizing Jake Peralta is like an Italian name.

• 20:48Speaker 02

He's half Jewish, half Italian. It was, it was like a prophecy. Mike and Dan foresaw it.

• 20:57Amy Poehler?

So for those who don't know, Mike Schur, who is also a guest on Good Hang, along with Dan Gora, created the show. And I think it might be interesting for people to, to know, like, our conversation that we had before the show. You've spoken about it before, but, you know, you were, you left SNL when? What year did you leave?

• 21:18Speaker 02

I want to say like 2012.

• 21:20Amy Poehler?

Yeah. So, you know, you were, I was about four years ahead of you in the trajectory of being on the show and leaving it. And-

• 21:30Amy Poehler?

You were approached by them to do this show and we had a conversation about it. And you were really, what do you remember from that time?

• 21:39Speaker 02

Well, the starting point of it for me was when I did a guest week on Parks, which was one of the most delightful weeks of my life. And I remember very vividly having a conversation with you that week. I was like, everyone's so nice, everyone's so funny, the writing's good. And I remember your quote exactly was, "It's a good life, Sam Burke." And I held on to that like very tightly. And then when they asked me about it, I called you again to be like, I should, right? Like, because going into it, I hadn't been thinking I wanted to do a TV show, having just done seven years of a TV show.

• 22:15Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 22:15Speaker 02

Which I'm sure crossed your mind when it came up too.

• 22:18Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 22:18Speaker 02

But then, truthfully, having seen Parks and love it so much and see it work so much and then had the experience of working on it and feeling that warmth and that happiness of working on it.

• 22:29Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 22:30Speaker 02

It really informed my choice. And, you know, Mike, as we know, has his rule that he tells everyone before he works with him, which is like, "The only rule is no assholes."

• 22:39Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 22:40Speaker 02

"Everyone you work with will be thoughtful and kind and engaged." And life is too short, basically. And I was like, "That sounds good to me."

• 22:49Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 22:50Speaker 02

Do you remember me calling you?

• 22:51Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 22:51Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 22:52Amy Poehler?

  I do, I remember.

• 22:52Speaker 02

I want to know your side.

• 22:53Amy Poehler?

Well, I remember because I, you know, it feels like, you know, there's a, there's this moment when you leave SNL or any job and you just kind of think, "Well, I guess I'm jumping off a cliff, like, I'll never, you know, I guess my, you know, I'm done."

• 23:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 23:09Amy Poehler?

But you're on, there's a lot of people at the station that have also left and they kind of go like, "Hey."

• 23:14Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 23:15Amy Poehler?

Welcome, there's a lot more out there. And that's what I felt like that conversation was with me and you, which is... Yes, there's, there's so many opportunities. And if it's a Mike Schur, Dan Gore opportunity, I would take it because it is gonna be one of the best experiences of your life. Did it prove to be?

• 23:32Speaker 02

Absolutely. And by the way, it's a gift that keeps giving. Like, it just moved to Netflix in the US and it's been there internationally. I took a trip, like a family trip to Europe a couple of years ago. And it was like, because of the Netflix part of it, I was like, everywhere I went, I was like, Jake Burt! I was just telling Fred this too. I was like, I felt like I was on Friends. I was like, oh my god, the show is actually really big and people really watch it.

• 23:58Amy Poehler?

  Oh, yeah.

• 23:59Speaker 02

And kids love it and families watch it together, which was such a part of my experience growing up, was like watching good, quality sitcoms together as a family. And just being able to think that I did something that is that for people is really gratifying. And it was amazing. Like, I'm still really close with everyone I worked with there and loved it so much. And everything you told me would happen, happened.

• 24:23Amy Poehler?

I mean, it's such a good show and exactly that, you feel like there was a sense of family. Can you tell me, like, what was, like, when you think about the, like, deeply funny moments with Andre Brouwer, who I love, and I'm so sorry for him, his passing and his loss. What, when you think about what you and Andre, how you guys laughed together, what was that dynamic, like, behind the scenes?

• 24:45Speaker 02

  Um, god.

• 24:47Amy Poehler?

Cause he's such, he's so good in the show. He's so poised.

• 24:51Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 24:52Amy Poehler?

  He's such a good actor.

• 24:53Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 24:54Amy Poehler?

But he was, and also, to me, I never, I never had the pleasure of meeting him. He seemed like he was just playful and fun.

• 25:01Speaker 02

He was. And just a good person. Like, so deeply moral and kind and pleasant and smart. And just like, we all absolutely loved him. I'm, I miss him a lot.

• 25:17Speaker 02

Our dynamic worked immediately. It was like, it's one of those things where you're just like, okay, this is kismet. I don't know how to explain it. Cause they, Mike and Gore cast him from like a meeting. They just like did a Zoom or something with him. And they were like, yeah, it's, I mean it's-

• 25:34Amy Poehler?

You know what, dude? That's probably pre-Zoom.

• 25:36Speaker 02

Yeah, it was probably a Skype.

• 25:37Amy Poehler?

  It was a Skype.

• 25:40Speaker 02

Bro, it was a disgusting ass Skype.

• 25:42Amy Poehler?

It was disgusting Skype. We used to have to do this thing called Skype.

• 25:46Speaker 02

  With a Y in it.

• 25:53Speaker 02

But yeah, I mean, I think Mike's talked about this a lot too. Like, we showed up for the first table read before we'd even shot the pilot. He walked in and we had like a very pleasant hello. And then we started reading it. And as soon as we started reading it, like the first scene, which is, you know, he comes out and I'm goofing with him and being a dummy and he's being stoic. And I, it just, you know how it is sometimes with creative stuff where you're like, I don't care how this came to be. It's working and I'm so happy.

• 26:21Amy Poehler?

  So grateful.

• 26:21Speaker 02

And then from that moment forward, like, the only thing me and him had to like, even talk about creatively was in the beginning, he didn't trust himself to do comedy.

• 26:33Amy Poehler?

  Ah, interesting.

• 26:34Speaker 02

Because he came so strictly from drama and Juilliard and, you know, like five or six times, we would do like a more serious topic on the show and he would flip that switch and everyone would be like, oh my God, like, what is Andre doing here? He's so good.

• 26:51Speaker 02

Like, he should be in like drama. He's like the best. But then he would do his Captain Holt stuff and it was the funniest thing in the show.

• 26:58Amy Poehler?

It's so interesting you bring up like Juilliard and for people that like, it's, it's kind of a shorthand for like a different way of training.

• 27:04Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 27:05Amy Poehler?

And, you know, I don't know. I think there's something very cool, even if you're not an actor or performer. In general, when you start working more and more, you're like, oh, everybody has a different way of working.

• 27:17Speaker 02

We all got here a different road.

• 27:19Amy Poehler?

I know. And we come from a very similar, I think, sketch

• 27:25Amy Poehler?

background where we're like burning through ideas. And I know as a performer, you and I like to keep it kind of, I like to keep it pretty loose.

• 27:35Amy Poehler?

Until it feels ready. And that really can unnerve other people.

• 27:39Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 27:40Amy Poehler?

And I, and it took me a long time to realize that, that that wasn't someone else's process.

• 27:45Speaker 02

  Correct.

• 27:45Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 27:46Speaker 02

I mean, we wouldn't do. We would do like a fun run or whatever. We took that from you guys too. We took a lot from Parks. Let's be real.

• 27:55Amy Poehler?

Well, we took it from the office. So a fun run was kind of like a

• 28:00Speaker 02

Once you have it scripted, then it's like, okay, have fun with it. Try different things. And we would do that occasionally. We would do it more when we had a guest who was really known for improv. Like we let Menzoukas cook, for example. I was, I don't, I mean, the difference between you and I, you're a much more seasoned performer, in my opinion. I always felt that way. I feel like I have gotten so much better and have such a better understanding of acting, having done Brooklyn. Cause but for me, that was like acting school.

• 28:29Speaker 02

I even remember another conversation I had with you when it's, when Brooklyn started texting you and being like, is it hard for you to memorize all this? And you went, now it is. And I was like, gosh, you're so cocky about it. And then like two or three years in, if someone had asked me, I'd be like, yeah, I can do it in my sleep.

• 28:45Amy Poehler?

You got it. I know. It was a muscle.

• 28:47Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 28:47Amy Poehler?

And then when you stop, it atrophies.

• 28:50Speaker 02

  It does.

• 28:51Amy Poehler?

Because that's why I'm doing this podcast. I literally can't memorize anything anymore. I mean, it's so hard to memorize now.

• 28:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:57Amy Poehler?

And I know that sounds so stupid, but I always say to people, think about, you know, this isn't like, acting is hard, but it is, but think about when you give a speech and you're in front of people and you have to memorize that speech. Now imagine 40 to 50 people standing, watching you do it, like drinking coffee, being like, get this speech right. Please get the speech right. You're not at a wedding and it's not fun. It's like a job and everyone's like, please get it right. Like I'm tired and it's almost lunch.

• 29:32Speaker 02

Also like long day or a long week and you're talking about at least 10 to 12 people that are like actively holding something heavy.

• 29:40Amy Poehler?

That's right. They're holding something heavy.

• 29:41Speaker 02

And like you see people's like legs start shaking and you're like, I gotta get this line.

• 29:45Amy Poehler?

That would be like, if you gave a wedding toast that you had to memorize and all of your family were holding giant rocks.

• 29:53Amy Poehler?

  You didn't get it right.

• 29:54Speaker 02

Uncle Gary just had a knee surgery. I gotta get this thing done.

• 29:57Amy Poehler?

And when you don't get it right, they all put the rocks down and they're like,

• 30:00Speaker 02

I guess we'll try it again.

• 30:02Amy Poehler?

Fucking guy can't get it right. No, but, but I, yeah, and, and, and, but, but we would burn through, just like you, like a lot of pages a day and you had to kind of just like figure it out. But, but I would say, having worked with you at SNL and, and also we had a really fun time with me, you and Maya were working on, on our fun dumb show, making it.

• 30:19Speaker 02

  Baking it. I loved it.

• 30:20Amy Poehler?

I'm baking it. Like, but I'll, I will say, Andy, I think, I think people don't know this about you is you're pretty meticulous when you work.

• 30:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:29Amy Poehler?

It's different than I think people would assume. How would you describe it?

• 30:33Speaker 02

I mean, that was actually where I was starting to very slowly walk towards about Brooklyn, which was for me, I would prefer having like, and it was good for Andre too, like three to five alts that are very specific. And not that we're just like, what are we gonna come up with? But where I'm like, I work with the writer on set. We had the brattest staff. They were so funny. And it would be like, anytime you get to a scene where we all feel like, you know, that thing where you just feel you're like, this joke's just halfway there.

• 31:06Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 31:07Speaker 02

And you might quickly scramble and then we would write out a bunch of alts, say it to each other, know that it's it. And so like, make it official one at a time. As opposed to like, it's the sauce, you know, we're all like the soup.

• 31:22Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 31:23Speaker 02

And then the other thing about me that I would agree with you is very meticulous is editing.

• 31:27Amy Poehler?

You're very meticulous about editing and you get very serious when it comes to music.

• 31:33Speaker 02

  I do.

• 31:36Amy Poehler?

Like, you know, I remember us recording what I thought was kind of a goofball song. And I remember being like, oops, like Andy's gotten, Andy's gotten quiet and serious. And it was like, right, of course, because you're professional and it is, it is.

• 31:52Speaker 02

I mean halfway, I don't know what I am. I just love it.

• 31:55Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you love it. And you want it to be good.

• 31:57Speaker 02

I do want it to be good. I want it to sound good.

• 31:59Amy Poehler?

And I will say that you and Yorma and Akiva, the members of Lonely Island, like you guys came in, in a way to that show that was super interesting because you were your own island, literally, that that came, you came in together with your own system that then had to kind of fit into the bigger SNL system.

• 32:18Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 32:19Amy Poehler?

And those early days, like we, like you talk about it so well on your podcast, which I'm obsessed with.

• 32:26Speaker 02

Thank you for being on it also.

• 32:28Amy Poehler?

Oh, my God, I love it. And it's hilarious. And I love how no one knows when you're recording. And a lot of times you guys don't show up.

• 32:33Speaker 02

Yeah, it's a mess. It's a mess. Definitely check that out.

• 32:36Amy Poehler?

That's my, that's my favorite part. But you go through, you're going through all of the digital shorts. You're going through them one by one. And I love that I forget, because it's like childbirth, like it all goes away, the pain part.

• 32:50Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 32:51Amy Poehler?

I forget the grind of each one that you guys had. And so you guys were really into the grind.

• 32:58Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 32:59Amy Poehler?

Do you remain into that grind?

• 33:01Speaker 02

Are you asking if I stay on my grind?

• 33:06Amy Poehler?

But you want to talk about that early grind?

• 33:09Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 33:10Amy Poehler?

Because it's interesting. I don't think people would assume that from you.

• 33:12Speaker 02

I mean, do I have the rise and grind mentality? No.

• 33:15Amy Poehler?

My memory of you three was constantly being tired.

• 33:20Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 33:21Amy Poehler?

Constantly wanting it to be better and better and better. Like, what is your relationship to like perfectionism or like continuing to tweak and make things better?

• 33:29Speaker 02

I think SNL was a struggle for us in that sense, because that's not the name of the game there.

• 33:35Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm.

• 33:36Speaker 02

But because we did pre-tape stuff, and it was, you know, videos we could edit, we did get closer to it than a lot of people at that time especially would have been allowed to.

• 33:47Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 33:47Speaker 02

Again, though, I would watch people like you and Fred and Bill and Wig and Maya and like so many of our peers who were like

• 33:59Speaker 02

In my opinion, on a performance level, the sell was how amazing you guys were live. And the the feeling of like, oh, anything could happen in this moment, whether or not it was true, because you guys are all precise as hell, too. But like, the electricity of that was the thing that I felt like I didn't always have live, but that we could make work in a pre-tape with the correct editing and the right concepts. You know what I mean?

• 34:26Amy Poehler?

I do. I mean, I would argue it's both and because I think that you do have a looseness as a performer that relaxes people.

• 34:32Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 34:32Amy Poehler?

You just have to have it. And I think that's what's interesting about you as a performer is like, I do think there's a precision that's important to you, but you don't, you don't see it when you're performing.

• 34:43Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 34:43Amy Poehler?

So that is hard to balance. And it's just like, because you're right. There was, I mean, I remember learning from Will Ferrell, like watching and being like, oh, in this show, if you're having fun and you're relaxed, people relax and have fun.

• 34:58Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 34:58Amy Poehler?

It is just, and I mean, there's nothing harder than someone saying like, just relax.

• 35:03Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 35:03Amy Poehler?

But it was true. If you could kind of zone out and kind of act like life is a dream.

• 35:11Speaker 02

  And you belong there.

• 35:12Amy Poehler?

And you belong there. Fake it till you make it.

• 35:14Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 35:15Amy Poehler?

The, it, it, it would work. And the people that couldn't do that, we had a really hard time.

• 35:20Speaker 02

  Definitely.

• 35:21Amy Poehler?

But I knew that you could do both. You could do that. And then you would go and edit for, and you and Keven, you would lock yourselves in.

• 35:27Speaker 02

  We were zombies.

• 35:27Amy Poehler?

And you were zombies and you were so tired.

• 35:29Speaker 02

We were so tired. We also like,

• 35:34Speaker 02

I mean, I talk about this a lot, which was, my dream was always to be on SNL. And then we got it, which was insane. Like, I would have been good doing one season and getting fired, knowing I actually got to try doing the one thing I wanted. And then, first season, it went good.

• 35:52Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 35:52Speaker 02

You know, which was really unexpected. Like, we'd been doing fine the first half of that first season. You were there.

• 35:59Amy Poehler?

  Yep.

• 35:59Speaker 02

We were like, figuring it out. I was figuring out how to present myself live. And I had done stand up, but like, what's the angle? How do you ingratiate the audience to you? And, and then that one video just went bonkers. And it was like, oh, shit. Okay. Uh, like, we arrived, quote unquote, early for how the show usually works, in my opinion.

• 36:20Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm.

• 36:21Speaker 02

  And then, because of that,

• 36:25Speaker 02

We were lucky, but also we immediately put insane pressure on ourselves because we were like, well, now we have to do things that do that. Like, the making the Narnia one was partly because it was a good sketch, but also just pure luck. Like, the fact that it was the moment that people were like, there's this thing called YouTube, and the moment that people wanted to be like, SNL had this pre-tape and it looked like they shot it on their own, and that's interesting to us now.

• 36:56Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 36:56Speaker 02

And like, whatever the hell confluence of things made it become a news story. I mean, when you are lucky enough, like us, to work long enough, you just keep making stuff that you think is good and that you want to watch, and then every now and again, it all kind of comes together for things that are out of your control.

• 37:14Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 37:14Speaker 02

  Right?

• 37:15Amy Poehler?

Totally. That's so much of it is timing and being in the right place.

• 37:18Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 37:19Amy Poehler?

Like you said, and having the right people around you, and being in the right era of SNL and all of that, having the right head writer who's supporting you, and being a certain age where you're not, whatever, too old or too young to handle it, all that stuff.

• 37:31Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 37:33Amy Poehler?

But I would say, what is that, there's like some quote, like, luck and preparation is the preparation. Hold on, let me look at my.

• 37:39Speaker 02

  Is the cure for hemorrhoids.

• 37:41Amy Poehler?

Yeah. What is it like, luck is the prepar-, you know what I'm talking about?

• 37:44Speaker 02

It's, uh, ti- time plus, no, preparation plus luck is success or something?

• 37:54Amy Poehler?

  Preparation.

• 37:56Speaker 02

  Is it?

• 37:56Amy Poehler?

I feel like Wayne Gretzky definitely said it. Or, or, um, it's, who said it? Luck, here we go. No, it was the Roman philosopher Seneca. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity, dude.

• 38:10Speaker 02

That's what it is. I've always called Seneca the Gretzky light.

• 38:14Amy Poehler?

I added the dude. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. That is true, that's what it was.

• 38:19Speaker 02

And, sorry, what is it again?

• 38:20Amy Poehler?

  It was.

• 38:21Speaker 02

  Luck?

• 38:22Amy Poehler?

Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. So you had been, let's see if we can memorize it.

• 38:30Speaker 02

We're gonna Garth and Cat it? Luck is when preparation meets opportunity, dude. Thank you.

• 38:43Speaker 02

  Oh, Seneca.

• 38:44Amy Poehler?

  Oh, Seneca, you crazy bitch.

• 38:47Speaker 02

  Just like, dude, okay.

• 38:51Amy Poehler?

  He's like, guys, gather around.

• 38:53Speaker 02

Dig on this. Dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, I got it, I got it, I got it.

• 38:58Amy Poehler?

  It was like, what?

• 38:59Speaker 02

You didn't know, people are gonna say this.

• 39:01Amy Poehler?

  Seneca!

• 39:05Amy Poehler?

But that is an example of that. You guys were ready, you had been working together for a really long time. And look, similarly with, I mean, I say this all the time, which is, there is no better feeling than having some people in your corner at a place like SNL or anywhere.

• 39:20Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 39:21Amy Poehler?

Where, to do almost anything, whether it's be on SNL, or it's like, go through hard times in your life, or, like, if you have a few people that can stand around you, like, you can get through anything. You just need one or two, or, like, and the fact that you guys had each other.

• 39:40Speaker 02

  It was a dream.

• 39:40Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 39:41Speaker 02

I mean, how many folks were you friends with when you got hired?

• 39:45Amy Poehler?

Well, I was really, I mean, Tina basically was, like, so instrumentally getting me hired, and Dratch was there, and so Tina and Dratch and I started together, and like, they were, and I knew Horatio, and I knew a lot of people, kind of, but Tina and Dratch and I had known each other at that point, but, you know, for 10 years, and started together, and that was huge.

• 40:05Speaker 02

  It makes a huge difference.

• 40:06Amy Poehler?

  To have, yeah, and, and...

• 40:08Speaker 02

I can't imagine coming in there...

• 40:10Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 40:11Speaker 02

  Totally alone.

• 40:12Amy Poehler?

I agree. And so many, like, warriors came through and just kind of, like, blazed a trail, or, or, you know.

• 40:20Speaker 02

Or didn't and did really well doing other things elsewhere.

• 40:23Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, that's true.

• 40:24Speaker 02

  Because it's...

• 40:25Amy Poehler?

  That's true.

• 40:25Speaker 02

  A very specific thing.

• 43:23Amy Poehler?

I do want to talk about Lazy Sunny for a second. I know you guys have talked about it a ton on your podcast, but I'll just tell you that, you know, that was part of a bigger Christmas show that a lot of people, and listen to Andy's podcast because they break it down beautifully, that episode. It's probably my favorite episode I've ever been on because Jack Black was the host.

• 43:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:39Amy Poehler?

And it was 2004. And that was five? Five. 2005, my bad. And it was, for me, far enough away from 9/11, which is when I started, which was like, we'll never laugh again. And not too close to me, you know, being pregnant and leaving.

• 44:00Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 44:00Amy Poehler?

It was just like, for me, in the sweet spot of finally feeling like I knew what I was doing.

• 44:05Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 44:05Amy Poehler?

And I can remember that moment. I remember being on the floor, watching that thing. And exactly what you said, it was as if the audience felt, you could feel them going, this is a new fun thing. We like these.

• 44:21Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 44:22Amy Poehler?

We want more of them. It was wild to feel that.

• 44:25Speaker 02

It was, it was life-changing for me. I mean, it was, again, I can't stress how much we were not expecting that to be the reaction.

• 44:34Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 44:35Speaker 02

We were just trying to get things on the show.

• 44:37Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 44:38Speaker 02

We were so green, so new. I mean, we had not had an insane amount of experience before we got the show either. Like, you had had a full show that I watched and loved, P.S. I had seen you doing like UCB shows and knew who you were. There's a lot of people, I think, who get SNL, especially then, that had like, really, I mean, think about like when Wig got hired. Wig's audition had like five fully-formed Groundlings characters.

• 45:08Amy Poehler?

  It was incredible.

• 45:09Speaker 02

That just, and Feral too, where you're just like, oh, they're ready for SNL, period. Like, they have been bred to, they're like Lionel Messi of SNL, you know? Where like, from a child, they were like, this is my path that I'm doing. Because I mean, Will is an anomaly. He's, he's like, I'm gonna decide to be the funniest person on earth.

• 45:26Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 45:28Speaker 02

For me, I was like, I had done stand up on and off and we had made videos, which at that time didn't directly translate. We didn't, we didn't get hired to do them.

• 45:36Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 45:36Speaker 02

It was more just like, we had fun at the movie awards, writing with a bunch of SNL people and Fallon and people and they were like,

• 45:41Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 45:41Speaker 02

Come play, come have, hang out and da, da, da. And we were like, okay. And then that one, we had done the one with Forte with lettuce and then that was Lazy Sunday was the second one. And then it was like getting shot out of a cannon.

• 45:54Amy Poehler?

And do you remember where you were when you got the call that you got the show? And did Akiva and Yorimar get the call at the same time or did someone get it first?

• 46:02Speaker 02

I got it first. I, they flew me out, but it didn't tell me. But I flew with Bill and he knew, because Marcy Klein had told him he got it and he knew I got it.

• 46:15Amy Poehler?

  What, he couldn't tell you?

• 46:17Speaker 02

Couldn't tell me and he didn't tell me.

• 46:19Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 46:20Speaker 02

  Bless his heart.

• 46:20Amy Poehler?

Bless his heart. Cause I, I, I understand. I would be afraid that I'd get fired if I told you or something.

• 46:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 46:26Amy Poehler?

But he probably was like, dude, you're gonna, he probably was like, this is great, right? And you were like, I guess.

• 46:31Speaker 02

He loves recounting it. Cause we sat together on the plane and like had drinks. And I was like, I wonder what's gonna happen. And he's like, I know what's gonna happen. You fucking got it, dude.

• 46:41Amy Poehler?

  So he did tell you?

• 46:42Speaker 02

  No, he didn't.

• 46:42Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 46:43Speaker 02

But he could have. I'm saying, he likes to talk about how he could have.

• 46:45Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 46:46Speaker 02

But anyway, so then, you know, we got there and I had a meeting with Lauren, because you have a meeting with Lauren and Lauren didn't tell me.

• 46:52Amy Poehler?

No, he never, he never hires or fires anybody.

• 46:55Speaker 02

No. So I walked out of his office and I think it was like Jen or maybe Shukas or people like that were there and they were like, so? And I was like, I don't know. They're like, you got the show. Like they were the ones who told me. And then we, we went to a dinner. Lauren, that's what Lauren told me. We're gonna have a dinner after this, so you should come. And I was like, okay, so I guess I'm still in the mix. And then they were like, no, you got the show. And so on the drive from, from 30 Rock to that dinner, I called my parents and we were all like crying and stuff.

• 47:25Amy Poehler?

  They were.

• 47:27Speaker 02

I mean, since I was eight, that was what I wanted to do.

• 47:31Amy Poehler?

  Andy.

• 47:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:32Amy Poehler?

  That's so cool.

• 47:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:34Amy Poehler?

And then what was the stress? Uh, codependently, I would be immediately stressed about Akiva and Yorimar.

• 47:40Speaker 02

Yes. They told them early the next week. It was like a weekend. So we didn't have to wait too long. But they had made a deal that if one of them got hired and not the other, that they wouldn't take it.

• 47:52Amy Poehler?

  Really?

• 47:53Speaker 02

Yeah, that not two out of three of us would leave.

• 47:55Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 47:56Speaker 02

But that if one of us got it, go with God.

• 47:58Amy Poehler?

Oh, wow. Oh, that's so sweet.

• 48:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:01Amy Poehler?

Um, okay, we spent a lot of time together, sleepless writing nights.

• 48:05Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 48:07Amy Poehler?

You have an interesting relationship with sleep.

• 48:09Speaker 02

  I do.

• 48:09Amy Poehler?

And I love talking to people about sleep.

• 48:11Speaker 02

  Oh, yes.

• 48:12Amy Poehler?

Tell me your relationship to sleep.

• 48:14Speaker 02

I love sleep. Until I had children, I would go to bed very, very late. I'm like textbook night owl. And when I worked at SNL, it was my dream job schedule as well, because I would go to bed at like four in the morning and sleep until like two, three in the afternoon. And then I started dating a musician who had the exact same schedule and it was like, perfect.

• 48:38Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 48:40Speaker 02

And so I've only ever had one job that like catered exactly to my preferred sleep schedule. And even now, like I love making movies and I love making the show and stuff like that, but you have to get up crazy early like a normal person who has a normal job.

• 48:54Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 48:54Speaker 02

Because most jobs start early and most people that are adults get up early. So it's been a hard adjustment.

• 49:03Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 49:03Speaker 02

And now the kids, I mean, you know.

• 49:04Amy Poehler?

You mentioned your wife, the great Joanna Newsom, incredible musician. Yay. I mean, I remember, I kind of remember, I was, I felt like I was around during the courtship.

• 49:14Speaker 02

I remember specifically one night, walking you home, we were all out at a bar and talking about how I had just started dating her and you were awesome about it.

• 49:23Amy Poehler?

You were head over heels right away.

• 49:25Speaker 02

  I was gone, yeah.

• 49:25Amy Poehler?

And you remain. Like, you guys are really, like, what, like, what, you know, you've been together now for...

• 49:33Speaker 02

  Seventeen or eighteen years.

• 49:34Amy Poehler?

Seventeen, eighteen. That's a long time, Andy, in a relationship, like, I mean, you've called her your best friend, basically.

• 49:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:43Amy Poehler?

  Say more about that. Like.

• 49:47Speaker 02

  I'm just lucky.

• 49:47Amy Poehler?

What's it like to be with your best friend?

• 49:49Speaker 02

  It's fun.

• 49:50Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 49:51Speaker 02

It's really fun. It's like, obviously, having kids changes things.

• 49:55Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 49:55Speaker 02

Because your responsibilities shift, your sleep schedule, but obviously, a million other things. But it still feels like anytime there's a pocket of time where it's just us, it still feels like we're getting away with something like we're having a sleepover. And it's fun and there's no one I would rather be hanging out with and chatting with. And it's, it's amazing. I'm, I feel really lucky to get to share my life with her.

• 50:17Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 50:19Speaker 02

But yeah, I remember that walk with you and talking about it and you going, I don't know, Sam, but I got a good feeling about this one. I always remember things you say, Amy.

• 50:29Amy Poehler?

I mean, you guys were deeply, very quickly, like.

• 50:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 50:33Amy Poehler?

  twinkly.

• 50:34Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 50:35Amy Poehler?

And you both have this thing that I think is really, like, I respect in both of you is like, you're artists. You take your art seriously and you liked that about each other.

• 50:44Speaker 02

  Definitely.

• 50:45Amy Poehler?

You really respected each other, really.

• 50:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 50:48Amy Poehler?

Like you were, there's a difference between being like a fan of someone's work and like really respecting what they do. It's very different.

• 50:54Speaker 02

I think a lot of people understood that from my perspective. I think some people at first were like, she likes that stuff that he does? But the truth is, she, she does and did.

• 51:06Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 51:06Speaker 02

Like her and her siblings are goofballs together and love comedy.

• 51:09Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 51:10Speaker 02

And it just, I couldn't believe my luck that that was the case.

• 51:13Amy Poehler?

I feel like the mutual respect is the reason, when you have a lot of years behind you, that's the thing that keeps couples together.

• 51:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:23Amy Poehler?

It's that, have you ever heard of that guy, uh, is a famous therapist, couples, do you watch couples therapy?

• 51:29Speaker 02

  I don't.

• 51:30Amy Poehler?

  Oh, my God, dude.

• 51:31Speaker 02

Should we watch it right now?

• 51:33Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, let's shut this down.

• 51:36Speaker 02

  I just finished And/or.

• 51:38Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 51:43Amy Poehler?

  And or.

• 51:44Speaker 02

  Yeah, bro. It was good.

• 51:46Amy Poehler?

  I'm sure it was.

• 51:49Speaker 02

I watched The Last of Us.

• 51:50Amy Poehler?

This is the exact opposite of Andor.

• 51:55Speaker 02

I watched Love on the Spectrum.

• 51:56Amy Poehler?

I love Love on the Spectrum. Oh, I cry so hard. You and I like to cry.

• 52:01Speaker 02

  We do like to cry.

• 52:01Amy Poehler?

We love crying. You know who else loves to cry? Seth Meyers.

• 52:04Speaker 02

Seth Meyers does love to cry.

• 52:05Amy Poehler?

We got to cry here. And Seth Meyers was the person that I asked to ask you a question.

• 52:11Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 52:12Amy Poehler?

So I, earlier before you came in, I was zooming with Seth Meyers. Who, you know, you guys have a very, oh, by the way, dude, have you heard?

• 52:22Amy Poehler?

  That Frisbee died.

• 52:24Speaker 02

Don't even play, because I'll be so happy.

• 52:38Speaker 02

I will never back off that. That dog sucks, dude. And I know this is like, I know this is a good vibes cast, so I don't even want to bring that energy.

• 52:47Amy Poehler?

  You're right. I shouldn't have, I shouldn't have mentioned that dog.

• 52:51Speaker 02

That dog is like a rat carcass.

• 52:56Amy Poehler?

Seth wanted me to pretend that he died.

• 52:58Speaker 02

I am, I am trying to figure out what, something special I can do when Frisbee does finally pass on.

• 53:03Amy Poehler?

You should, you should do like a memorial video that's about how much that dog sucked.

• 53:11Amy Poehler?

  Pretty funny. Pretty funny.

• 53:15Amy Poehler?

But, but Seth, you know, like your relationship is really fraternal and really supportive. You hear it on your podcast, you've seen it in real time, like, and his question was the one I asked you. Basically, he wanted to know about the, the young, the little brother of it all, like what it was like being, you know, having sisters and being the little brother. But in many ways, I would say the dynamic between the two of you is like, older brother, younger brother.

• 53:43Speaker 02

  I would agree. Yes.

• 53:45Amy Poehler?

  Right?

• 53:45Speaker 02

But also because Seth likes to be in charge and in control.

• 53:48Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 53:49Speaker 02

  And I do not.

• 53:51Amy Poehler?

  You don't?

• 53:52Speaker 02

I like to be in control of what I make, but not of the situation.

• 53:56Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, that's right.

• 53:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 53:58Amy Poehler?

  That's right.

• 53:58Speaker 02

I mean, I can if I need to be.

• 54:00Amy Poehler?

  Yep.

• 54:01Speaker 02

But the fun of it for me is not that.

• 54:05Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 54:05Speaker 02

The fun of it always for me, I mean, I was like the diffuser in my family, you know?

• 54:09Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 54:10Speaker 02

And youngest and get attention through being silly and making jokes and making people laugh.

• 54:16Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm.

• 54:17Speaker 02

  Finding my spot that way.

• 54:18Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm.

• 54:19Speaker 02

And, you know, it changes as it becomes your job.

• 54:22Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 54:22Speaker 02

But I feel like also like Seth's persona is I know what's going on and I'm gonna put everyone at ease and mine is like, you don't know what's gonna happen, maybe.

• 54:36Amy Poehler?

Totally, like, you don't know what's gonna happen.

• 54:38Speaker 02

Yeah, it might be like not what you're expecting a little bit. That's my hope, anyway.

• 54:42Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Do you, have you ever taken like your Enneagram test? Do you know your number? Have you taken the Enneagram?

• 54:47Speaker 02

Wait, this is different from the thing that me and you texted about?

• 54:50Amy Poehler?

What were, or maybe I've texted you to make you take it. I'm obsessed with it. It's like one, numbers one to nine.

• 54:56Speaker 02

Yeah, we did text about it.

• 54:57Amy Poehler?

What did you, what was your number?

• 54:59Speaker 02

Am I allowed to look at my phone and look at our old texts?

• 55:01Amy Poehler?

What did we get? Cause I made you take it. Did I make everyone all of lonely?

• 55:07Speaker 02

I think that I had the same one as Tina and Seth, is what you said.

• 55:12Amy Poehler?

Okay, that's right. You were a three, the achiever.

• 55:15Speaker 02

  Fuck, that sounds so sexy.

• 55:17Amy Poehler?

Right? I mean, congrats. But that's what I mean is the three isn't always the peacemaker. The three is like.

• 55:26Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 55:27Amy Poehler?

But the three, the three is, and we really will cut all this out. Cause there's truly.

• 55:34Speaker 02

Do you know what I'm talking about? Oh, yeah, yeah. This is three.

• 55:37Amy Poehler?

  You were a three.

• 55:37Speaker 02

You said this is three. Does this resonate?

• 55:39Amy Poehler?

And you were like, hell, yeah.

• 55:41Speaker 02

And I said, you're eight all day.

• 55:43Amy Poehler?

  Cause I'm an eight.

• 55:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 55:45Amy Poehler?

Challenger and three is the achiever. So three is like, can be like, you like to hear a good job.

• 55:52Speaker 02

I do like to hear a good job. Good boy.

• 55:55Amy Poehler?

Good boy, good job. Yeah, your three is so big. You know what's, and that's what she said. Um, you know what's small?

• 56:02Speaker 02

  Hmm.

• 56:03Amy Poehler?

  Is your four, which is.

• 56:05Speaker 02

I wish so bad you'd been like, yo, dinky little dick.

• 56:10Speaker 02

Like, hey, hello, it's Good Hang.

• 56:12Amy Poehler?

  My god, I was like-

• 56:13Speaker 02

Sorry, this is what I heard.

• 56:16Amy Poehler?

We were just in the office before we came in watching The Bash Brothers again because the shrinky dinky, "My name is Mark and I eat pork with a fork, but I'm not a jork, but I'll jork it."

• 56:25Speaker 02

I'll jork it out the pork.

• 56:26Amy Poehler?

I'll jork it out the pork.

• 56:27Speaker 02

I feel very proud of that.

• 56:29Amy Poehler?

  God, I'd love that.

• 56:32Amy Poehler?

  I love-

• 56:33Speaker 02

Noah should have had The Bash Brothers on his orc.

• 56:38Amy Poehler?

Bash Brothers, so many dumb, I mean, you love dumb fun shit.

• 56:43Speaker 02

Oh my god, yes. Me and Keve did that knowing it was for no one and we just loved making it so much.

• 56:49Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 56:50Speaker 02

Like, our friends that we grew up with were like, "You guys made a whole visual poem rap album about The Bash Brothers?" We're like, "Yeah."

• 56:58Amy Poehler?

And you know, podcasters, we are talking about sports, which is exciting. For people who don't know, The Bash Brothers were Mark McGuire, Jose Canseco-

• 57:05Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 57:05Amy Poehler?

Very rumored at the time to be doing a lot of, uh-

• 57:09Speaker 02

  Steroids?

• 57:09Amy Poehler?

  Steroids.

• 57:10Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 57:11Amy Poehler?

And, um, like, but it was like such an eighties rivalry and, and you guys just dressed up like them and wrote a million songs about-

• 57:20Speaker 02

It was so fun. It was so fun. By the way, the dream of that one was, I think there was a player at, on the actual Oakland A's when it came out, who like used it as his walk-up music.

• 57:32Amy Poehler?

  Oh, wow.

• 57:33Speaker 02

And they like would play "Let's Bash" at the stadium, at the Oakland Coliseum, before they, you know, they're gone now. You know this, you're sports nerd.

• 57:39Amy Poehler?

Yeah, well, I remember when that happened. But, uh, and I gotta tell you, like, and I just texted you about it the other day, like, still crushing it. Still, you guys still crushing, like, the anxiety, uh, short, uh, was so good on the 50th.

• 57:56Speaker 02

  Thanks.

• 57:56Amy Poehler?

Such a funny and, and, and moving. Funny and moving, which you know, the fact that you had, you sung about how everyone had nervous diarrhea before they did every sketch on us now.

• 58:07Speaker 02

  If these pipes could talk.

• 58:08Amy Poehler?

If these pipes could talk. Incredible, incredible. What was it on the dolly when you were, when you were, were you moving or was the camera moving in that moment?

• 58:17Speaker 02

I was moving. That was a Mike Diva shot. He's a director there now who we're buddies with. That was his idea and I was, when he showed me that back, I was like, ooh, that's a good shot.

• 58:24Amy Poehler?

  So good.

• 58:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 58:25Amy Poehler?

And then sushi glory hole. Imagine that. Where are you going?

• 58:38Amy Poehler?

  So fucking good.

• 58:41Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 58:41Amy Poehler?

I mean, like, every song you guys make is a, is a bop, is a song you want to listen to regardless of the comedy.

• 58:49Amy Poehler?

  Andy.

• 58:49Speaker 02

  Damn, yeah.

• 58:50Amy Poehler?

So good. And I just, there's so, you've made so many good ones, but I just want to remind everybody, like, you've been doing it for 20 years.

• 58:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 58:58Amy Poehler?

  Sushi, like, so good.

• 59:00Speaker 02

  Thanks.

• 59:00Amy Poehler?

  So stupid.

• 59:02Speaker 02

  So stupid.

• 59:02Amy Poehler?

  Perfect.

• 59:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:03Amy Poehler?

A little bit dirty. Fantastic outfits.

• 59:07Speaker 02

  So good.

• 59:08Amy Poehler?

  Great attitude, POV and attitude.

• 59:10Speaker 02

  They came with it.

• 59:11Amy Poehler?

Was it any more fun? I mean, you talked about this on the podcast, but was it, does it get any easier to make them now? Or is it harder to make them now?

• 59:20Speaker 02

  Both.

• 59:20Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 59:21Speaker 02

The technical aspect is easier because we've done so many.

• 59:24Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 59:24Speaker 02

Coming up with something we find interesting and funny becomes more difficult because we've done so many.

• 59:29Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 59:30Speaker 02

But that was one in particular where we had written, Akiva had, came up with the phrase sushi glory hole. I can't believe I'm treating this so seriously, but.

• 59:39Amy Poehler?

We should treat this like actors on acting.

• 59:41Speaker 02

So when Akiva first said sushi glory hole. But we.

• 59:46Amy Poehler?

And what did God say when he met you at the pearly gates?

• 59:48Speaker 02

At that point, we were just channeling.

• 59:52Speaker 02

We giggled and, and I was like, yeah, we're not going to do that. And then he kept saying it and I couldn't tell if he was doing it as a bit, like, we should do that? Or if he actually wanted to do it?

• 1:00:00Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 1:00:00Speaker 02

So then after a while, I was like, you know what? Fuck it. Let's try it. And we did a whole other version on a different beat. And we hadn't come up yet with the idea of hear us out over and over again. So then we were like, we kind of let it sit because we were like, it's okay. It just feels like AI doing a Lonely Island song or something. You know what I mean? Where it's like, it's like, we're rapping and it's this and it's about a thing that you wouldn't rap about. And we were like, yeah, I guess so. And then a couple of days later, because we just decided to go in the studio a lot at that time,

• 1:00:33Speaker 02

he came in and played a different song he had heard on the radio. I can't remember which one it was, but it inspired him. It was like a more modern song.

• 1:00:46Speaker 02

Something with ASAP Rocky and some people on it. And, and we were like, oh, let's try it to a beat like that. And we did, and then because we switched the beat, it inspired the hear us out thing. And then once we did that, once we started doing the laugh, which is the right laugh, which you know, when you're in a room writing something.

• 1:01:05Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:05Speaker 02

We were like, uh oh, it's the laugh. We're having that laugh where we know we are officially into this idea.

• 1:01:11Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:12Speaker 02

Not just like, this will be professional and technically up to snuff.

• 1:01:15Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 1:01:16Speaker 02

Where you're like, ooh, I now like this for sure.

• 1:01:18Amy Poehler?

Yeah. You're like, oh, we gotta do it.

• 1:01:20Speaker 02

Yeah. And then it was like, yeah, now we gotta do it. And it opened it up for us.

• 1:01:23Amy Poehler?

That's a good example of you guys, like you don't, you want to keep going back. And I mean, Seth mentioned this when we were talking earlier is like, there's like the improv bones version where like, sometimes we, we romanticize the first idea.

• 1:01:37Amy Poehler?

And you guys don't do that. You're like, this isn't ready yet. This isn't right yet. Like you like.

• 1:01:43Speaker 02

Yes, but if it's the best, if it's really funny, the first time, we don't fuck with it.

• 1:01:48Amy Poehler?

Yeah. What was the fastest song you ever wrote? Fastest digital short you like came up with and did like, like, oh, from the minute you thought of it till you did it was super fast. It just came out.

• 1:01:59Speaker 02

A lot of them were like that when we were working at the show.

• 1:02:02Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:02Speaker 02

  Cause the schedule's crazy.

• 1:02:03Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:04Speaker 02

So like, Ladies Sunday, once we had the idea, wrote in a couple of hours.

• 1:02:08Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:08Speaker 02

  Natalie's rap, same thing.

• 1:02:10Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:11Speaker 02

Shyroni, we wrote in like it under an hour. It takes a long time to come up with the idea. And then sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you're in the shower at home and you have a full idea and you come in and you go, I have an idea. And then you just write it and it happens.

• 1:02:25Amy Poehler?

Sometimes you have your dick in the box in the shower and then you come in and you're like, let's do it on the show.

• 1:02:30Speaker 02

Dig in the Box was Yorm's idea and it was, it took us a long time to decide what you're right about because that was an assignment. It was like, Justin wants to do a song.

• 1:02:39Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 1:02:40Speaker 02

Think of an idea to do a song with him. So we had met with him and we knew that we all had grown up listening to hip hop and R and B in the early 90s.

• 1:02:48Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:49Speaker 02

And so we were like, maybe something in that area. And then it was like, okay, but what's the premise?

• 1:02:53Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:02:54Speaker 02

And then we struggled for a couple hours trying to think of something. And then when Yorm said that, we were like, oh, okay, go.

• 1:02:59Amy Poehler?

There's so many digital shorts that I watch that I'm sad I'm not in.

• 1:03:07Amy Poehler?

And this, here's my gotcha question.

• 1:03:08Speaker 02

  Yeah. Oh, here it comes.

• 1:03:11Amy Poehler?

I'm gonna put my gotcha glasses on.

• 1:03:16Amy Poehler?

  Why aren't I in them?

• 1:03:21Amy Poehler?

I feel like I didn't get asked to be in enough digital shorts.

• 1:03:25Speaker 02

  Can I, I agree.

• 1:03:27Amy Poehler?

  What, what did I do?

• 1:03:29Speaker 02

  I don't know. Is it?

• 1:03:32Amy Poehler?

I, my brain has a theory and maybe it's just protecting me.

• 1:03:36Speaker 02

  You were already doing update.

• 1:03:37Amy Poehler?

That's my theory is you guys shot a lot of stuff on Fridays and we would have to read update jokes on Friday. And I feel there were times where it was very like, we need someone quick to do this thing. And I was not avail. But there's so many shorts where I'm like, damn, I wish I could be in that.

• 1:03:54Speaker 02

I also wish that. You don't understand. I also think, Amy, like, it's a good lesson learned for me. It's, and for anyone in any field. I think we often were like, we don't want to bother her.

• 1:04:07Amy Poehler?

  I can't believe it.

• 1:04:09Speaker 02

But it's true. I mean, you were in like 10 sketches every week and update.

• 1:04:13Amy Poehler?

I'm such a fan of those shorts so much. And I definitely watch them times. Sometimes I'm like, man, I wish I was in them. So I guess what I was hoping is like, maybe we could do some kind of like Zemeckis style.

• 1:04:25Speaker 02

Oh, put you back in them.

• 1:04:26Amy Poehler?

  Put me back.

• 1:04:27Speaker 02

Oh, we're, we're gonna gump it. Full gump.

• 1:04:34Amy Poehler?

We'll just do some de-aging and we'll go back.

• 1:04:37Speaker 02

Wait, so can I gotcha question back?

• 1:04:39Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, I gotcha question back.

• 1:04:40Speaker 02

  These are not gotcha questions.

• 1:04:41Amy Poehler?

I know, and mine is not a gotcha question.

• 1:04:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:04:43Amy Poehler?

  Gotcha back.

• 1:04:44Speaker 02

Can you think, which ones are the most that you?

• 1:04:46Amy Poehler?

Name, I can name five. I wish I was in so bad.

• 1:04:48Speaker 02

  Oh, my God.

• 1:04:49Amy Poehler?

Dick in a Box, for sure.

• 1:04:50Speaker 02

  Right, of course.

• 1:04:51Amy Poehler?

I mean, of course. Um, Dear Sister. I was like, huh, I fucking love that one.

• 1:04:58Speaker 02

  But dude, that shoot sucked.

• 1:04:59Amy Poehler?

And it did suck. It was all night.

• 1:05:00Speaker 02

We were at the Flat Hotel till like six in the morning.

• 1:05:02Amy Poehler?

  I know, I remember.

• 1:05:03Speaker 02

That's another reason where I'm like, we're not gonna ask Amy to come do that.

• 1:05:05Amy Poehler?

I know, I wish I knew, you know, and like, um.

• 1:05:08Speaker 02

Also, for every one of those, there was like five that we did at Flat Hotel till four in the morning that were so bad.

• 1:05:15Amy Poehler?

And I love you guys talking about them. I love you guys talking about them.

• 1:05:19Speaker 02

And you gotta be honest. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, it'll not.

• 1:05:23Amy Poehler?

I mean, that's what's so funny about, about, um, the stuff that we do is like, nobody remembers the ten to one versions of things that were just stinkers.

• 1:05:34Speaker 02

Always. Crazy stuff. Stuff where I was mad that it would get cut and then I would go back and be like, oh, my God, there's nothing here. Like, I was just running on fumes. Like, why was I so mad? It was just because like, it was literally as much as like, I exist too. Like, I wanna be on the show too.

• 1:05:53Amy Poehler?

Emily Spivey and I wrote a scene one night that we thought was so funny and it was just about these two giant, um, like, uh, trucks, like truck drivers, who would come up next to each other and, and keep telling the other one to honk it.

• 1:06:06Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:06:07Amy Poehler?

And it was like, honk it, honk it, and just telling the other one to honk it. And we were like, oh, we were dying. And we turned it in like, you know, eight forty, five AM. And Shoemaker was like, we're not doing Honk It. And we were like, what?

• 1:06:23Speaker 02

  We already made t-shirts.

• 1:06:24Amy Poehler?

He's like, we can't, we can't produce Honk It. We can't get two giant, like, you know, you know, we can't get two cabs. And also, like, you guys, we're like thirty-five sketches over and like you turn this in at eight forty-five and it's like, we were like, justice for Honk It. Like, we were still, we were so mad.

• 1:06:41Speaker 02

So just to be clear, you're not gonna let us read Honk It?

• 1:06:49Amy Poehler?

  Okay. Okay.

• 1:06:49Speaker 02

  Noted.

• 1:06:51Amy Poehler?

Looking forward to having an employer that supports honkit.

• 1:06:55Speaker 02

  Fucking noted.

• 1:06:56Amy Poehler?

Looking forward in the future to working with someone who understands honkit and what it means to us.

• 1:07:02Speaker 02

  Oh, my God.

• 1:07:03Amy Poehler?

Speaking of what we watch and listen to.

• 1:07:06Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:07:06Amy Poehler?

I asked my, I asked my guests now, what are you watching, listening to, doing that's making you laugh?

• 1:07:11Speaker 02

  Making me laugh?

• 1:07:12Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:07:15Amy Poehler?

Making you feel good, making you check out? What are you like, how do you, you know? How do you?

• 1:07:22Speaker 02

Oh, well, this is loaded, but I saw the new Naked Gun.

• 1:07:27Amy Poehler?

Oh, okay. Talk about it because it looks so good.

• 1:07:30Speaker 02

  It's really funny.

• 1:07:31Amy Poehler?

  Okay, so directed by Akiva.

• 1:07:32Speaker 02

Obviously, it's directed by Akiva and co-written by Akiva, and he's my bestie. But it, I wouldn't say it if it wasn't true. It's really fucking funny. It's just, the people I've talked to that have come and watched screenings so far have kind of a similar reaction, which is, it's just all jokes.

• 1:07:50Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:50Speaker 02

It's been so long since something new got made.

• 1:07:53Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:53Speaker 02

That was just purely trying to make me laugh.

• 1:07:56Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:07:56Speaker 02

And it's in that style, but it's also updated. And Liam's amazing, and Pam's amazing, and Keev did a great job. The writers with him did a great job. Dan and Doug, I mean, it's, it's just joyful. It feels really fun.

• 1:08:09Amy Poehler?

How important was like Naked Gun and Airplane to you growing up?

• 1:08:12Speaker 02

  Big.

• 1:08:13Amy Poehler?

  Same.

• 1:08:13Speaker 02

All the surrealistic, dumb, cartoony, live-action stuff, I loved. Monty Python, those, Pee-wee, later, Strangers with Candy, like, things, things like that where you bend the world and make it be whatever you want it to be. You know, we all watched, like, Hollywood Shuffle, and I'm gonna get you sucka, and all those movies. Anything like that where it was like, you could actually have like, a giant thing fall through frame and no one will acknowledge it or something, you know?

• 1:08:41Amy Poehler?

I remember like, the character on Naked Gun that was really tall, that was always out of frame.

• 1:08:46Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:08:46Amy Poehler?

And you've never saw at the top of him.

• 1:08:48Speaker 02

Oh, my God, it's my favorite joke. Are you gonna say the same joke?

• 1:08:51Amy Poehler?

  Is it the banana?

• 1:08:51Speaker 02

  Yes. It's my favorite joke.

• 1:08:54Amy Poehler?

Oh, my God, let's watch it.

• 1:08:55Speaker 02

  Ever.

• 1:09:08Speaker 02

  It's like half a banana.

• 1:09:10Amy Poehler?

Half a banana, it's hanging, can you imagine half?

• 1:09:14Speaker 02

  And no one reacts.

• 1:09:16Amy Poehler?

And then, talking about new projects, Digman is coming back.

• 1:09:20Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:09:21Amy Poehler?

That is, you created that, right?

• 1:09:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:09:23Amy Poehler?

  With Neil.

• 1:09:23Speaker 02

  With Neil Campbell.

• 1:09:24Amy Poehler?

  Tell, like.

• 1:09:26Speaker 02

During, during the pandemic, it was like, you know, we were all bound to the home. And I was like, I've had this idea for a really long time. And I'd been talking to him about it. He's a writer on, was a writer on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and a bunch of other stuff. And we had been kind of wanting to make it forever. It's basically like shitty Indiana Jones, the animated show.

• 1:09:43Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 1:09:45Speaker 02

And it's, the show is so fun.

• 1:09:47Amy Poehler?

It's so, and what a cast, Mitra.

• 1:09:49Speaker 02

Yeah, Mitra's the best, Meadows, Timmy Robinson. It's a really good group. And it's just like, if you like jokes and goof ass comedy, it really scratches the itch.

• 1:10:01Amy Poehler?

You do a lot of animated stuff, you like it?

• 1:10:03Speaker 02

I love it. I love it. Growing up, I loved it. Like, the first time I got asked to do like a voice in an animated movie, I was just like, yes, how, where do I go?

• 1:10:13Amy Poehler?

Do your kids ever watch your stuff and do they hear your voice?

• 1:10:16Speaker 02

My daughter watched a couple of the Hotel Transylvanias.

• 1:10:19Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:20Speaker 02

  And liked them.

• 1:10:20Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Did she recognize your voice in them?

• 1:10:23Speaker 02

  Kinda.

• 1:10:24Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, that's cool.

• 1:10:25Speaker 02

My kids are not to a place yet where they like that I'm in the thing.

• 1:10:28Amy Poehler?

No, my children don't like to watch.

• 1:10:29Speaker 02

Do they ever get to that point?

• 1:10:30Amy Poehler?

Not really. I mean, can you ima, think of your mom and then think of watching your mom do.

• 1:10:35Speaker 02

  Everyone likes Inside Out.

• 1:10:36Amy Poehler?

  Inside Out, uh, but, but.

• 1:10:38Speaker 02

By the way, congrats on all your success.

• 1:10:40Amy Poehler?

  Congrats on all your success.

• 1:10:42Speaker 02

  Congrats on all your success.

• 1:10:42Amy Poehler?

  Congrats on all your success.

• 1:10:45Speaker 02

  Inside Out, Inside Out 2.

• 1:10:47Amy Poehler?

  Congrats on your success.

• 1:10:48Speaker 02

I heard it crested a billy.

• 1:10:52Amy Poehler?

  Oh, really?

• 1:10:55Speaker 02

  You got points?

• 1:11:01Amy Poehler?

But have we been in an animated movie together?

• 1:11:03Speaker 02

  I don't think so.

• 1:11:05Amy Poehler?

  We might have been.

• 1:11:05Speaker 02

  We, for how much?

• 1:11:08Amy Poehler?

We do a lot of animated movies, you and I.

• 1:11:10Speaker 02

For how, I'm just saying, Amy, generally speaking, for how much I've, I mean, I'm speaking on your behalf, how much we love each other and are friends, I don't think we have actually done that much together.

• 1:11:19Amy Poehler?

You know, you're so right. That's fucked up. I mean, I put in my contract, I, you know.

• 1:11:25Speaker 02

  Yeah, understood.

• 1:11:26Amy Poehler?

Wait, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs? I got fired from that.

• 1:11:30Speaker 02

  What?

• 1:11:31Amy Poehler?

Oh, yeah. I was the original gal in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

• 1:11:36Speaker 02

  What the whole fuck?

• 1:11:37Amy Poehler?

And I was fired because I did not do a good job.

• 1:11:43Amy Poehler?

And they had the audacity to replace me.

• 1:11:48Speaker 02

  I hardly, hardly believe that.

• 1:11:50Amy Poehler?

No, we have not been in an animated movie together. That's so funny. Even right, we have not done enough stuff together.

• 1:11:55Speaker 02

I'm even trying to think of like, at the show, the, to me, if you asked me to pick like, the things that stood out the most to me of me and you being together on stage at SNL, the two that immediately come to my mind are the Palin rap.

• 1:12:08Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 1:12:09Speaker 02

  And I'm No Angel.

• 1:12:11Amy Poehler?

Wow. Two pregnancy, peak pregnancy performances.

• 1:12:15Speaker 02

  But both all timers.

• 1:12:17Amy Poehler?

I mean, I remember asking for your help when we were writing that Palin rap, and you gave me some nuggets, including the having her hubby come out there.

• 1:12:26Speaker 02

  Oh, was that my idea?

• 1:12:27Amy Poehler?

I think you gave me that idea of him coming out.

• 1:12:29Speaker 02

That makes me feel better. I was saying, we were talking about it on ours, and I was saying I felt bad because I gave you some line that was like, kind of like tricky rhyme scheme, but wasn't a laugh. And then I was like, why'd I do that?

• 1:12:41Amy Poehler?

  Well, I mean.

• 1:12:42Speaker 02

So like, so much something between us need to go between. It was that line.

• 1:12:46Amy Poehler?

I feel like, because Sudeikis came out as, um.

• 1:12:49Speaker 02

  Todd?

• 1:12:49Amy Poehler?

Todd, yeah. Andy, I love you so much.

• 1:12:52Speaker 02

  I love you, buddy.

• 1:12:53Amy Poehler?

Thank you so much for doing this.

• 1:12:54Speaker 02

  It was an absolute pleasure.

• 1:12:55Amy Poehler?

It was such a pleasure. Like I said at the very beginning of this, the fact that I was getting to talk to you today was just like, so calming. I wasn't the least bit stressed. I never am when I'm with you.

• 1:13:05Speaker 02

  That's so nice saying.

• 1:13:06Amy Poehler?

I love spending time with you.

• 1:13:07Speaker 02

You too, buddy. And I will say, not to keep hitting it over and over, it's still not an old thing for me to hear you say nice things about my comedy.

• 1:13:16Amy Poehler?

  I really enjoy your comedy.

• 1:13:17Speaker 02

It makes me feel good and happy because you are one of the people I have aspired to and looked up to, and I love you so much and I love your comedy so much.

• 1:13:25Amy Poehler?

  Andy, thanks, buddy.

• 1:13:27Speaker 02

  You're just, you're the best.

• 1:13:31Speaker 02

  May I?

• 1:13:32Amy Poehler?

Oh, I wanted to just show you this pen before we wrapped. This, I found this on the desk today.

• 1:13:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:13:39Amy Poehler?

And it is one of those Crinkle pens. Have you seen it?

• 1:13:42Speaker 02

  Oh, boy.

• 1:13:44Amy Poehler?

Do you know what it is?

• 1:13:45Speaker 02

Is it gonna collapse when I flip the switch?

• 1:13:46Amy Poehler?

No, just give her, give her a little twist on the top.

• 1:13:52Speaker 02

Are we edging on ASMR right here?

• 1:13:53Amy Poehler?

Yeah, that's exactly what we've been doing.

• 1:13:57Speaker 02

Does that sound nice? Is this nice?

• 1:14:01Speaker 02

Is that what ASMR people ask?

• 1:14:02Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I think, isn't it so funny that, how can, it's so pervy. ASMR is so pervy.

• 1:14:08Speaker 02

Don't. Yeah, how dirty do we get on this podcast?

• 1:14:12Amy Poehler?

No matter what you do, don't masturbate to this sound.

• 1:14:16Amy Poehler?

You better not, you better not.

• 1:14:18Speaker 02

  Don't you dare masturbate.

• 1:14:20Amy Poehler?

  Ssh, you dirty.

• 1:14:22Speaker 02

Even though it probably feels so.

• 1:14:27Speaker 02

I hope you're wearing Bose noise-canceling headphones. But be careful because someone could walk in and you won't hear them.

• 1:14:35Amy Poehler?

• 1:14:43Speaker 02

I hope I don't accidentally click my long nails on the window pane.

• 1:14:49Amy Poehler?

• 1:14:53Amy Poehler?

• 1:14:53Speaker 02

And it's a really good song, like all of the songs that Only I'm in Make. So that would be what I'm going to be watching this week to laugh. And in the meantime,

• 1:15:58Amy Poehler?

keep laughing. I don't know. I don't know how to. I really don't know how to. And these are just, they just get harder and harder. That's what she said. Okay, bye.
