Sam Rockwell

Sam Rockwell (Bad Guys 2, The White Lotus, Moon) is an Academy Award-winning actor. Sam joins the Armchair Expert to discuss growing up in the Tenderloin of San Francisco, doing plays and improv with his mom at 10 years old, and the parallels between charm and fuel. Sam and Dax talk about stumbling into a Willy Wonka entrance doing his faker baker dancing, adopting delusions of grandeur that he moves like a stretch limo, and completing the two year Meisner program that changed his life. Sam explains getting recognized for the first time while bussing tables, how he builds characters with his acting teacher of 26 years, and the illusion of safety amid peaks and valleys of success. • 0:00Dax Shepard?

Welcome, welcome, welcome to Armchair Expert. I'm Dax Shepard and I'm joined by Lily Padman.

• 0:04Speaker 01

  Hi.

• 0:05Dax Shepard?

And we have one of my biggest crushes alive.

• 0:09Speaker 01

  He's a stud.

• 0:10Dax Shepard?

Oh, what an animal. Sam Rockwell.

• 0:12Speaker 01

You know him from absolutely everything.

• 0:15Dax Shepard?

He's just got that X factor. He's got that sprinkle of just unbridled charisma.

• 0:21Speaker 01

  Yeah, he has an electricity.

• 0:24Dax Shepard?

High on the soul spectrum, also uber comfortable in his own skin.

• 0:27Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 0:28Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 0:29Speaker 01

  Yeah, we love him.

• 0:30Dax Shepard?

I don't know. I'm gonna put him in a top five, like, most comfortable in their own skin. I don't know who the other, I know Snoop's there.

• 0:37Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 0:37Dax Shepard?

He might be number one, but that's a nice quality.

• 0:41Speaker 01

Okay, on a scale of one to a hundred, where do you put you?

• 0:45Dax Shepard?

Comfortable in my own skin. And I'm gonna, let's just arbitrarily give Rockwell 92.

• 0:51Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 0:51Dax Shepard?

  We'll give Snoop 100.

• 0:52Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 0:54Dax Shepard?

  I'll go 88.

• 0:56Speaker 01

Yeah, I think you're very comfortable in your skin.

• 0:58Dax Shepard?

  Most of the time.

• 0:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:00Dax Shepard?

Yeah. I have my moments, but, well, talking to Snoop, funny enough.

• 1:04Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:04Dax Shepard?

  I get so insecure.

• 1:05Speaker 01

That's how this works. If you talk to people who are above you on the scale.

• 1:10Dax Shepard?

They shine a light on the 12% that's uncomfortable. Okay, three billboards outside of Ebbing, Missouri. The Green Mile, Jojo Rabbit, Moon, Charlie's Angels, so memorable, White Lotus, season three. And then, and this is a bit of an update, I ended up after this interview, just tagging along with him.

• 1:33Speaker 01

  Oh, nice.

• 1:34Dax Shepard?

To go watch The Bad Guys 2. It wasn't a premiere, it was just for the cast.

• 1:38Speaker 01

  Oh, fun.

• 1:39Dax Shepard?

And I went, and it was so fun, and I loved the movie. Did you see the first one?

• 1:44Speaker 01

  No, what I want?

• 1:45Dax Shepard?

They do actions so well. That's the unique thing about this particular franchise.

• 1:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:52Dax Shepard?

Is the actions off the charts. And it was great. The Bad Guys 2. And that is out in theaters August 1st. Take your loved ones, you'll love it. Please enjoy Sam Rockwell. We get support from Gusto. • 3:16Dax Shepard?

This episode is brought to you by McDonald's. The Quarter Pounder with Cheese with Medium Fries and a Drink is now $8.

• 3:26Speaker 01

  What?

• 3:27Dax Shepard?

Okay, I need to talk about something that doesn't get enough respect. The Quarter Pounder with Cheese. This is not a casual burger. This is a crafted burger. We're talking 100% fresh beef cooked right when you order it. No artificial flavors, no fillers, no preservatives, just beef doing what beef is supposed to do. And here's a detail I love. There's a cowbell sound in the kitchen. When somebody orders a Quarter Pounder with Cheese, a cowbell goes off and the grill master throws a fresh patty down. That's like having your own entrance music at McDonald's. I want a cowbell for everything in life. The onions are hand topped by someone who just knows the right amount. Two slices of cheese laid out in a star pattern, so every single bite gets cheese. And two pickles side by side, so you're never in a pickle desert.

• 4:11Dax Shepard?

Every bite is accounted for. Someone engineered this thing with love. I love a Quarter Pounder.

• 4:17Speaker 01

Me too. That's my order. It's a Quarter Pounder with cheese. I love it. I didn't know they put so much effort that they did a star formation. I should have known because you can taste it when there's effort.

• 4:29Dax Shepard?

Yeah, the love. Don't tell anyone this, but I'll put two of them back.

• 4:33Speaker 01

  Yeah, I'm not surprised.

• 4:35Dax Shepard?

The Quarter Pounder with Cheese with Fries and a Drink, now $8 for a limited time only, only at McDonald's. For a limited time only, prices and participation may vary. Prices may be higher in Hawaii, Alaska, and California, and for delivery. Fresh beef not available in Alaska and Hawaii. Offer not valid for delivery.

• 5:09Speaker 01

  I'm thrilled.

• 5:10Speaker 02

  I got you some chocolate.

• 5:11Speaker 01

  Dax is undressed.

• 5:12Speaker 02

I don't know if you're into it. Gorgeous. I don't know which ones you want to trade.

• 5:17Speaker 01

  No, both seem so.

• 5:18Speaker 02

I took the one with the almond, sorry. Yeah, I would have had the one with the almond too.

• 5:22Dax Shepard?

  What is this place?

• 5:23Speaker 03

  Morrow.

• 5:25Speaker 02

God damn, they really know what they're doing. Yeah, durian matcha?

• 5:28Dax Shepard?

Yeah. You want to pull off that too?

• 5:31Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 5:32Dax Shepard?

  Let's see how fucking.

• 5:33Speaker 02

How much caffeine can you intake in a day?

• 5:35Dax Shepard?

We're gonna need a pack of cigarettes at some point. It's been a long time for me.

• 5:39Speaker 02

  I had a cigarette recently.

• 5:40Dax Shepard?

  Oh, you did?

• 5:41Speaker 02

And I haven't one in seven years.

• 5:43Dax Shepard?

On the deck of a boat or?

• 5:45Speaker 02

  On Easter Island.

• 5:46Dax Shepard?

Okay, so not a terrible guess.

• 5:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 5:48Dax Shepard?

What were you doing on Easter Island?

• 5:49Speaker 02

  I was doing a, oh, we're recording, aren't we?

• 5:51Dax Shepard?

  We're always recording.

• 5:52Speaker 01

  We're always recording.

• 5:53Dax Shepard?

And we're gonna miss out on an Easter Island story.

• 5:55Speaker 02

I was with John Malkovich and we just were hanging, avoiding people. And we started talking about cigarettes and then, you know.

• 6:05Speaker 01

  You need a one.

• 6:06Speaker 02

Yeah. When's the last time you smoked a cigarette?

• 6:07Dax Shepard?

I know exactly, because I had to quit, you know, I was a very heavy smoker. So in September, 20 years.

• 6:13Speaker 02

  20 years, wow.

• 6:14Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Were you ever a heavy smoker?

• 6:16Speaker 02

No, I was always a dilettante smoker, so.

• 6:19Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you have this, it's a very enviable, you can do everything, but you're not addict-y, right?

• 6:24Speaker 02

I mean, I'm a little addict-y with the gym. It's definitely a better addiction, as you know.

• 6:29Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes.

• 6:30Speaker 02

Because you have a great gym.

• 6:31Dax Shepard?

  We just perused it.

• 6:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 6:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 6:33Speaker 02

You push the sled, you pull the sled.

• 6:35Dax Shepard?

I don't know. Is that how you hurt your back, pulling a sled?

• 6:38Speaker 02

It's fucking Zoom and FaceTime training. Two dimensional image with a trainer and they can't see your form. So I'm really so over zoom, man. Even therapy, like I did therapy on FaceTime. I just got sick of it.

• 6:52Dax Shepard?

Now I'm guessing you were already seeing that therapist in person, right? Cause I started in COVID.

• 6:59Speaker 02

  Oh, you started in COVID.

• 7:00Dax Shepard?

  Therapy.

• 7:00Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 7:01Dax Shepard?

And I started on FaceTime and I think that did a lot for me. It was another dude.

• 7:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:07Dax Shepard?

I'm not super trusting of other dudes.

• 7:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:10Dax Shepard?

And there was some distance and I ended up loving that. Cause I'm like, oh, this is great. I'm not like in a room with a man where I'm having all those weird things about being in a room with, you know, a dad.

• 7:21Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 7:22Dax Shepard?

Cause the therapist is kind of your dad, or if you have a male one.

• 7:24Speaker 02

Sure. I have a female. I have a woman and you know, I've got some mommy issues. So it's good. It's probably good. It's all that transference stuff.

• 7:32Dax Shepard?

  You're projecting onto them.

• 7:33Speaker 02

Yeah, they can be anything. It can be your girlfriend, your brother, your sister, your mother, your father, whatever.

• 7:37Speaker 01

You start treating them as if you treat those people.

• 7:40Speaker 02

  Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, exactly.

• 7:42Dax Shepard?

  They're actors.

• 7:43Speaker 02

  Therapists.

• 7:44Dax Shepard?

Yes. Cause they have you come in there like, oh, great. I'm Sam's mom. I gotta remember. And then some other gal comes in and she's like, okay, I'm the shitty sister. Right? You kind of gotta code switch and be different.

• 7:56Speaker 02

Yeah, you do. I guess. I guess you have to be facile. Well, you have to listen.

• 7:59Dax Shepard?

Yes. Another key ingredient of acting.

• 8:02Speaker 02

  That's tough.

• 8:03Dax Shepard?

Especially if you've had the same client for like a decade and they're still telling you about something.

• 8:07Speaker 02

Same old broken record. So you've been, you've been only doing a couple of years. Got it. Okay.

• 8:11Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 8:12Speaker 02

Yeah, I've been doing it like a while.

• 8:13Dax Shepard?

  How many years?

• 8:15Speaker 02

Since I had a bad breakup in my twenties. And then I got kind of weird. I had a weird phase and then I had to go to therapy.

• 8:27Dax Shepard?

Like the movie shame weird phase or?

• 8:29Speaker 02

  Not quite like that.

• 8:30Speaker 01

Like the monologue from White Lotus phase?

• 8:32Speaker 02

No, I, I could have gone that road maybe, but not that weird. No, I got what you might call hypochondriacal sort of neurotic.

• 8:39Speaker 01

  Oh, interesting.

• 8:39Speaker 02

And it was kind of a post. Now, rosy's kind of thing is throughout my twenties, I wasn't neurotic at all. And around 29, I had this breakup with a very serious girlfriend and then I just got real sensitive and I had to go see a shrink.

• 8:53Dax Shepard?

You thought you were sick all the time?

• 8:55Speaker 02

I got really sensitive, like car noises.

• 8:57Dax Shepard?

  Oh, oh, oh.

• 8:58Speaker 01

Oh, this sounds like an anxiety disorder.

• 9:00Speaker 02

  Yeah, exactly.

• 9:01Speaker 01

Yeah, I had that panic disorder.

• 9:03Dax Shepard?

Ding ding ding. When she worked at SoulCycle, which you were just telling me you loved.

• 9:05Speaker 02

  You worked at SoulCycle?

• 9:06Speaker 01

  I did the front desk.

• 9:08Speaker 02

  No shit.

• 9:08Speaker 01

But I got so anxious, I had to quit.

• 9:10Speaker 02

No shit. Yeah, of course. It's so fucking loud in there.

• 9:13Speaker 01

You know, I'm like 25 years old and people would come out and be passing out and it was on us to like revive them. I was like, I don't have the skill.

• 9:20Speaker 02

Passing out, of course. Cause they're doing like three classes in a row and they're not hydrating.

• 9:24Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 9:24Dax Shepard?

Okay, let's go over our history real quick.

• 9:26Speaker 02

  Yeah, okay. Groundlings, right?

• 9:29Dax Shepard?

God, great memory. Of the people who ever came backstage after a show, you were among them.

• 9:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:35Dax Shepard?

I want to say you were with Mini Driver.

• 9:37Speaker 02

I came to see Mini. Had you done Idiocracy at that point?

• 9:40Dax Shepard?

No, no, no. I had never been in anything. I didn't have a SAG card. I didn't have an agent. And I was already on the Sam Rockwell train. I got on very, very early and I was already very obsessed with you.

• 9:50Speaker 02

That's nice of you to say.

• 9:52Dax Shepard?

Truly. I was like, look at this sparkly unicorn.

• 9:55Speaker 02

Meanwhile, you're a trained improvisationalist, which is a big skill.

• 10:00Dax Shepard?

  Nicotine.

• 10:00Speaker 02

I need, oh, nicotine. I thought we were gonna make out or something.

• 10:04Dax Shepard?

  I will.

• 10:04Speaker 01

Well, we're not ruling that out.

• 10:06Dax Shepard?

If this goes perfectly, that's where we'll end. But yes, you came backstage.

• 10:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 10:09Dax Shepard?

And we had just done an improv show.

• 10:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 10:11Dax Shepard?

And you were so complimentary. Again, I didn't have an agent. I was 28. I'm like, it's never gonna happen. Just you being effusive about thinking I was funny and that you had seen me be funny and I was a huge fan of yours, literally bought me time. I was like, oh my God. It was like a little gift that was just fueling the tank.

• 10:32Speaker 02

How old am I? What are you saying is that I'm really old?

• 10:34Dax Shepard?

  No, me?

• 10:34Speaker 02

And that you were a kid and I was already a senior.

• 10:37Dax Shepard?

Fuck that. I was 28 and didn't have a SAG card or an agent. Time was ticking. That made my year. The fact that you would come to that show and you were so nice. You're such a generous dude. And then a couple of years ago, we were in England visiting Kristen on a movie.

• 10:50Speaker 02

  We hung out with Stanley.

• 10:51Dax Shepard?

And Stanley Tucci, who we had interviewed.

• 10:54Speaker 01

  Invited us over for dinner.

• 10:56Dax Shepard?

And you were there and I exploded with excitement.

• 11:00Speaker 02

  We were cracking up.

• 11:01Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 11:02Speaker 02

I remember you, me and Stanley were giggling like 12 year olds.

• 11:05Dax Shepard?

  Obnoxiously so, perhaps.

• 11:07Speaker 02

  Yeah, yes, yes.

• 11:08Speaker 01

Do you remember that Dax did a reading of Stanley's book? At the dinner?

• 11:13Speaker 02

  That's, of course he did.

• 11:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:15Dax Shepard?

  What did I do wrong?

• 11:16Speaker 02

That scared you. I see you're a little traumatized from it.

• 11:18Dax Shepard?

What was my take? I had a take?

• 11:20Speaker 01

I think you were doing a voice and you were just really doing a full reading.

• 11:24Speaker 02

Was he doing a Stanley impersonation?

• 11:26Speaker 01

I thought it was a big swing.

• 11:27Speaker 02

That's a big swing at a dinner, yeah.

• 11:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:29Dax Shepard?

The thing I most remember is you telling me about a time in your youth that you went to a sex club in San Francisco.

• 11:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:36Dax Shepard?

  That was on roller skates.

• 11:38Speaker 02

Good segue to White Lotus, yeah.

• 11:40Dax Shepard?

You said you got to this club and you're like, whoa, there's a lot going on. There's a lot going on. Then all of a sudden, this dude on roller skates rolls by and he's fucking jacking himself while he's rolling.

• 11:50Speaker 02

That's a true story. He was just roller skating. There was a person with a little tiny hammer and a chisel and.

• 11:55Dax Shepard?

Oh, just abusing their genitals? What was the title? Like, what was the event? Did it have a name?

• 12:01Speaker 02

Well, no, I bumped into a friend of mine from like elementary school and he said, I'm doing this thing.

• 12:08Dax Shepard?

  I got a new thing I'm doing.

• 12:09Speaker 02

  I got a new thing.

• 12:10Speaker 01

  He has a new hobby?

• 12:12Dax Shepard?

Tell you what I'm into now?

• 12:14Speaker 02

  Hey, check it out.

• 12:15Dax Shepard?

  What's up, what? No.

• 12:18Speaker 02

He said, check it out. And I said, oh, that's kind of cool. It was just not what I imagined, really. I thought it would be kind of sexier.

• 12:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:25Speaker 02

And it wasn't so sexy. I was just like, yeah, no, this is not for me.

• 12:29Dax Shepard?

Don't you find that where the rubber meets the road with a lot of this stuff? It's not what you're hoping for.

• 12:35Speaker 02

  It sounds good.

• 12:36Dax Shepard?

Look at that, speaking of sex clubs. Okay, that was a trap.

• 12:40Speaker 02

  That was a trap?

• 12:41Dax Shepard?

  That book isn't there normally.

• 12:43Speaker 02

  Oh, is that right?

• 12:44Dax Shepard?

And I brought it in and I said to Monica.

• 12:46Speaker 02

  Talk about therapy.

• 12:47Dax Shepard?

This is ointment and I want to see if the fly flies into it because I have some bizarre hunch. You also like crumb.

• 12:54Speaker 02

Well, yeah, sure. What's not to like?

• 12:56Dax Shepard?

  Stupid.

• 12:57Speaker 02

  I mean, it's pretty great.

• 12:59Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, crumb's the greatest.

• 13:00Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 13:01Dax Shepard?

Okay, back to this dinner. The dinner was so fun. I had so much fun.

• 13:04Speaker 02

I remember laughing a lot. Yeah.

• 13:06Dax Shepard?

Another obsession of mine has been Goggins for a while.

• 13:09Speaker 02

  He's great.

• 13:09Dax Shepard?

Could you be happier than anybody's having the moment?

• 13:12Speaker 02

I'm so happy, you know, and we've done Cowboys and Aliens together.

• 13:16Dax Shepard?

  You met him there?

• 13:17Speaker 02

  Yeah, we met on that.

• 13:18Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 13:18Speaker 02

I don't know if I've ever worked with a friend that closely. So when we did White Lotus, it was really cool to have a shorthand with somebody like that.

• 13:26Dax Shepard?

But I did wonder with the, the White Lotus scene in particular, does being really good friends help or hurt? Cause it could definitely go either way.

• 13:34Speaker 02

It definitely helped because we had to play friends.

• 13:37Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 13:37Speaker 02

And I just could make him laugh. He could make me laugh really quickly.

• 13:41Speaker 01

Was it improv? It wasn't improvised?

• 13:42Speaker 02

No, but there were a couple of little things to kind of like tiny, tiny things.

• 13:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:47Speaker 02

Mike's too good a writer. You don't want to mess with it.

• 13:49Speaker 01

Have so many people come up to you about that monologue more than you would have expected?

• 13:52Speaker 02

It's kind of crazy. Yeah. You know, and I was ambivalent because I was worried I wasn't going to be prepared because I was tired and I'd been doing all these monologues in the South African film.

• 14:01Dax Shepard?

You have a 10-page monologue in that one?

• 14:03Speaker 02

Yeah, that's right. How do you know that?

• 14:05Dax Shepard?

Cause it's my job to learn about you for today, but I told you this will be the last time I know this much about you.

• 14:10Speaker 02

Yes, and that's it. And I remember I actually went to Billy Crudup, who I've gone to before to get help on that monologue. So I was a little tuned up, but I was then I was worried I wasn't going to be able to get off book in time. And then Leslie said, I'll help you. And we went on safari and she got me off book and we saw, you know,

• 14:28Dax Shepard?

  While you're looking at animals?

• 14:29Speaker 02

Yeah. Yeah. It was pretty cool.

• 14:32Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 14:33Dax Shepard?

  Were you in South Africa?

• 14:34Speaker 02

We were in South Africa. So we were in this place called Kruger.

• 14:37Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 14:37Speaker 02

  You've been safari?

• 14:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, Tanzania.

• 14:40Speaker 02

Tanzania. Okay. So that's not gorillas. That's more cheetahs and elephants.

• 14:44Dax Shepard?

  Lion, yeah.

• 14:45Speaker 02

Oh, that stuff. So that's what we did.

• 14:47Dax Shepard?

  Classic stuff.

• 14:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:48Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 14:49Speaker 02

  You got close and stuff?

• 14:50Dax Shepard?

  Oh yeah, terrifyingly so.

• 14:51Speaker 02

  Terrifying. Yeah.

• 14:52Dax Shepard?

Was Leslie? At ease and you were terrified.

• 14:55Speaker 02

She was at ease. I was terrified.

• 14:56Dax Shepard?

  Same.

• 14:57Speaker 02

  Yeah, no question.

• 14:58Dax Shepard?

The first time you see a lion, we're in the little Jeep and it's just Kristen and I in the driver. And all of a sudden, the lion's walking, it's walking and I'm like, this is really cool. This is really cool. Now it's getting really close to the thing. I'm like, I don't know about this. There's no doors. And then the fucking lion walks up and you know, it's 24 inches away. And it turns its head and it looks me in the eyes and I'm like, oh my God, this thing could just jump and eat me. And Kristen is delighted and not terrified. And I was terrified all the time.

• 15:24Speaker 02

I don't know what that says about either of you. What's that phrase, the gift of fear? You know, I don't know. But then maybe, you know, I don't know.

• 15:31Speaker 01

Women walk around this earth with predators everywhere. We are used to it.

• 15:39Speaker 02

  That's a very good point.

• 15:40Speaker 01

And you guys, and now you're around a real predator.

• 15:44Speaker 02

  That's really interesting.

• 15:45Dax Shepard?

  Food chain shit.

• 15:46Speaker 02

That's very interesting. I never thought of that.

• 15:48Dax Shepard?

Yeah, someone pointed out like that a woman often gets into a small metal box with another animal that's two X their size.

• 15:55Speaker 01

  That's how we live.

• 15:56Dax Shepard?

That's an elevator ride. And I'm like, yeah.

• 15:59Speaker 02

It's totally true, man. We had a koala bear and I was like, you know, they have like, don't they, they famously have chlamydia.

• 16:07Dax Shepard?

  Oh, sure. Yeah.

• 16:08Speaker 02

And they have claws, big claws.

• 16:10Dax Shepard?

  And chlamydia.

• 16:11Speaker 02

And I was like, this thing's gonna eat my face and give me chlamydia. Unless it was just laughing at me. I'm an idiot, you know?

• 16:17Dax Shepard?

Okay. So you did that. You worked on the monologue.

• 16:19Speaker 02

Yeah, I sort of pitched some things to Mike White. He went for some of it and then yeah, just went in there and did it. Shaved my head and put a tattoo on and some scars and that was it.

• 16:29Dax Shepard?

It's none of our business, but how many takes, what realm of takes was that?

• 16:32Speaker 02

You know, they hadn't earwig. I said, prepare an earwig just in case I get in trouble. And then I didn't need it. I did it in one take.

• 16:39Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 16:40Speaker 02

And then I think we continue to do one takers, you know, and not break it up too much. Mike's just amazing. You know, he's like a Patty Chawski kind of writer.

• 16:49Dax Shepard?

  You're tremendous in it.

• 16:50Speaker 02

  Thanks, man.

• 16:51Dax Shepard?

And I'm sure you've been getting a lot of love, but I hope people give Goggins the love. If we can't cut.

• 16:56Speaker 02

As far as that, yeah, absolutely.

• 16:59Dax Shepard?

If you're on your own in a payphone giving that monologue, I think it's just a different experience.

• 17:03Speaker 02

No, absolutely. He was having a great time. He was so happy to have somebody there. He'd been kind of, you know, he was Amy Lou and they had a different thing. Their thing was more combative.

• 17:16Dax Shepard?

And he probably needed a fucking break from that because it cannot be fun to be a dick to your co-star in every scene for months.

• 17:22Speaker 02

Yeah, he was definitely having a tough time and Walt gets very serious. He gets very into it, you know?

• 17:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:27Speaker 02

And so he needed somebody to kind of like, hey.

• 17:30Dax Shepard?

So the reason I brought him up is that we interviewed him and then I hung out with him on a Sunday. It was so fun. And we're in the hot tub and then just randomly he says, and I haven't seen your scene yet. So I don't even know you're in. This is like pre that airing and somehow he says he's friends with you. And I said, oh my God, you know, I had the most fun night ever in England with him. I said, and then I think I texted him too much. I go, I think I really came on too strong.

• 17:56Speaker 02

  Not possible.

• 17:57Dax Shepard?

And he goes, no, I bet he just, you know, he's in the clouds sometimes and I bet he doesn't even know he didn't or did respond to you. And I was like, okay, that's really comforting.

• 18:06Speaker 02

  Did I not respond?

• 18:07Dax Shepard?

  Well, intermittently.

• 18:08Speaker 02

No, I always respond, even with an emoji.

• 18:10Dax Shepard?

  You know what's funny?

• 18:11Speaker 02

I'm really good with that. Even if it's just an emoji, I respond.

• 18:14Dax Shepard?

Well, when I was texting you yesterday, I realized when I looked at the two previous texts, they were green. So I'm like, we don't know if greens get to you.

• 18:21Speaker 02

Yeah. What does that mean? Cause I got some stuff not going through. Like I sent some videos to you and Justin and it didn't go through. I think I might need some technical help.

• 18:29Dax Shepard?

And then I want to own my own. I got a little carried away with leaving you voice messages of me just going, how much you did you rash call? My favorite line you've ever said in a movie.

• 18:39Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 18:41Dax Shepard?

As George Bush. And so anytime I be thinking of it, I would just send you a voice memo.

• 18:47Speaker 02

  I remember that.

• 18:48Dax Shepard?

Of me going, oh, that's right.

• 18:50Speaker 02

I'll bet you did you rash call.

• 18:53Dax Shepard?

Anyhow, how are you going to respond to that?

• 18:55Speaker 02

I love a voice memo. I love a weird voice memo though. Somebody just called him walkie talkies, voice memos.

• 19:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 19:01Speaker 02

It's kind of, are you a voice memo person or you're not?

• 19:03Speaker 01

I'm getting into it. I think it's with age.

• 19:06Speaker 02

Not wanting to type? Yeah, laziness. Well, this phone is like really small. You got an old one? Yeah, you gotta like really type.

• 19:13Dax Shepard?

Yeah, well, yours is that bad, boy?

• 19:14Speaker 02

  I mean, it's old. I think that's maybe what's going on.

• 19:18Dax Shepard?

  Is that a seven?

• 19:18Speaker 02

A lot of stuff wasn't going through today. I think I tried to send you and Justin the picture of Justin a couple of times.

• 19:24Dax Shepard?

  Justin Long?

• 19:26Speaker 02

  Yes, yes, Justin Long.

• 19:27Dax Shepard?

Justin Long is also due and ripe and deserving of the same moment Goggins is having because I think there'll be a moment where people will look back and go, oh, right, he was perfect in every single thing he did.

• 19:39Speaker 02

  He is. He's awesome.

• 19:40Dax Shepard?

So I'm just flagging him as he deserves a Goggins moment.

• 19:43Speaker 02

Me too. I'm flagging him too. The impersonations he can do when we hit him up. His impersonations are incredible. Is Matt Dillon? Yes. Matt Dillon is astounding. Did he do Matt Dillon too? He did Matt Dillon. He did a movie with Matt Dillon. He did it to Matt Dillon on the talk show. I don't think it went great. He can do Vince Vaughn so well, who's so hard to do. I know. He's so fucking funny, Vince. I saw him at this hotel. We met for lunch at this Four Seasons and he starts doing this bit with the waiter. He's like, we want the special. Can you get the special? The chef wants to give us the special. You know, the special thing. And the waiter's like, I'm sorry, sir. Oh, no. You know, the chef asked to give us the special, the special meal. Oh, my God. You know, do that. You know what I'm talking about.

• 20:25Dax Shepard?

Make it right. Make everything good.

• 20:26Speaker 02

Make it right. Make it good. Make it good for us. And he keeps saying, and the waiter doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. At the end, he gets the bill. He says, it's free, right? He gets the bill and he's, and he keeps giving the waiter the slickly.

• 20:39Dax Shepard?

  It should have been free.

• 20:41Speaker 02

  Oh, God. He's hysterical.

• 20:43Dax Shepard?

  Okay, Bay Area?

• 20:44Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 20:45Dax Shepard?

  1968, you arrive?

• 20:47Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 20:47Dax Shepard?

  November 5th?

• 20:48Speaker 02

  November 5th, 1968.

• 20:51Dax Shepard?

  Okay, we welcome you.

• 20:52Speaker 02

  Nixon was elected, yes.

• 20:54Dax Shepard?

  On that day?

• 20:55Speaker 02

  Yes, yes. Oh, wow.

• 20:57Dax Shepard?

I don't know if that's fortuitous or harbinger of bad things to come.

• 21:01Speaker 02

  Probably.

• 21:02Dax Shepard?

Mom and dad are both actors.

• 21:04Speaker 02

Yes, and my dad dropped out kind of early. My mother became a painter and my dad did a lot of, lot of jobs. We moved to San Francisco in the Tenderloin. I don't know if you know what the Tenderloin is. Kind of a sketchy.

• 21:17Dax Shepard?

Gnarly, right? In the 70s and 80s?

• 21:20Speaker 02

Yeah, my dad had a couple of weapons pulled on him and he was mugged and sort of after nine, he got remarried. He had a better job, but he was a union organizer for a while. He drove a cab. And I met Harvey Milk in San Francisco when I was like eight. Really? We lived in the Castro for a bit. We lived in the Fillmore, the hay, you know, everywhere. He relocated to Culver City? He did. He's got Culver City and Santa Monica. Yeah. Cause his bride lives in Santa Monica. Yeah, yeah. He met her at a Bernie Sanders rally.

• 21:48Speaker 01

  Oh my gosh.

• 21:50Speaker 02

They're a groovy couple. I just think that's weird to have two actor parents. It is a little weird, although my dad quit so early. You never saw him? He quit when I was five. Yeah. Okay. So I don't really, although he's gotten back into acting a little bit, taking classes just for fun. And then my mom's a painter now. She's wild. I mean, I did plays with her when I was like a kid. Yeah. She took you on stage when you were 10, did improv in the Village? I mean, I wouldn't call it real improv, but it was, yeah. But she taught me the basic rules, you know? Always say yes. Yeah. Listen. Yes, and you're smarter than you think you are. Is that, isn't that one of them? Be a pro at everything, an expert, they say. So they got divorced when you were five? Yeah, they got divorced when I was five. And she moved to New York City? That was it. My dad had a lot of girlfriends, moved around a lot.

• 22:34Speaker 01

So you were bopping back and forth?

• 22:36Speaker 02

In the summer, I'd go visit my mom for a month and that's how I did a play with her. Were you running around and exploring New York as a little kid? Yeah, I was. It was pretty wild. I was talking to Zazie Beats and her mom. Michael Pinyet was on this movie in South Africa and Zazie and all these great people, Juno Temple. But I remember talking to her, she lived in Chelsea. It wasn't Chelsea back then. Her mother was from there and I'm talking to her mother about the seventies. And I realized I'm Zazie's mother's age. Yes. And then I was like, wow, okay, that's what's happening. I could be all their fathers, Juno, everyone. Yeah, you're the same age as Zazie's mom. But when you're talking to Zazie,

• 23:17Speaker 02

you and I are in a similar situation, which is we have our whole lives, I'm presuming, flirting with women. Sure, sure. It's why I get out of bed. Sure, of course. Well, Zazie and I in this cartoon are romantic. She's the fox, I'm the wolf. And then I'm like, wait a minute, what? Yes, hold on. I'm how much older than your mother? What's happening? There's two themes I want to explore in this. Yes, yes. Ride of ours. Let's do it. I want to explore charm. If I have to pee in this thing, is that gonna be, how's that gonna go down?

• 23:47Dax Shepard?

That'll dovetail nicely into my theme.

• 23:51Dax Shepard?

I want to talk about charm and I want to talk about fuel.

• 23:54Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 23:55Dax Shepard?

Yes, the fuel of life. For me, from very young, these are parallels I've noticed when I was researching you. I know my explanation. So, dancing.

• 24:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:05Dax Shepard?

I started, yes, love dancing, danced immediately in junior high at the dances and immediately realized I'm the only boy dancing. All these girls like this.

• 24:13Speaker 02

It's a way to meet girls. That's exactly right. I mean, I was not, I'm a faker baker dancer. When I did Fosse, I had to really learn some stuff.

• 24:23Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 24:24Speaker 02

So my shit's really like faker baker.

• 24:26Dax Shepard?

I implore everyone to go and watch, there's these montages of you entering Fallon.

• 24:30Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. You're now like- Those are the same moves. If you Google, if you look at it, it's just the same boring moves.

• 24:36Dax Shepard?

Upping it. I was watching it this morning and what's so funny is you're upping it, you're upping it, and I was saying, I was saying out loud to Chris, I'm like, I don't know where he's gonna go with the next appearance. And you come out with a fucking cane because there's nowhere to go.

• 24:48Speaker 02

Yeah, that was a, Luke, I stumbled into a Willy Wonka entrance by accident. Yeah, it's definitely a way to get attention. I think that I've always pictured myself kind of like a Chris Walken build. You're sort of like that. I always wanted to be like a lanky Tommy Hearns, Chris Walken kind of-

• 25:07Dax Shepard?

  Stretch limo.

• 25:08Speaker 02

Yeah, and I always pictured myself that way, but actually I'm not, you know, actually I have T-Rex arms and, you know, like, if I were to throw a jab in my mind, I'm a Muhammad, I'm Tommy Hearns or something. But actually, no, I'm like this guy.

• 25:23Dax Shepard?

  Right, you're more Sugar Ray.

• 25:24Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, I'm more like, you know, the guy Mayweather knocked out, but, so I think I have like delusions of grandeur. I don't know where that came from.

• 25:32Dax Shepard?

But there's a stubbornness where you go like, I refuse to accept this.

• 25:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:36Dax Shepard?

And so, how do I maneuver around? Cause that's not the vision I have for my life.

• 25:42Speaker 02

But when I look back on a lot of the actors that I admire, Nicholson, Pacino, De Niro, you know, they're not big guys. And I think with that- Comes the gift of fury. And I think that that's a good gift, you know, like a John Malkovich or somebody like that, who I just worked with, you know?

• 26:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 26:01Speaker 02

And Turturro and Gary Oldman, you know, they have the gift of fury.

• 26:05Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 26:06Speaker 02

You're not going to accept whatever it is you've been dealt.

• 26:09Speaker 01

I like the idea of you saying, I think it's very honest, just that you walk around kind of with the vision of who you are. And then sometimes you look in the mirror and it's like, oh, wow, that's actually not, I think I have that, too. It's like, oh, I think I look like that. But then I look in the mirror and it's like, oh, whoa, whoa, whoa. I better not look in the mirror. I'm better off just like living in my head.

• 26:29Speaker 02

Less and less look in the mirror, let me tell you.

• 26:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 26:31Speaker 02

But yeah, you have to be slightly delusional to be successful.

• 26:35Dax Shepard?

And by the way, you can infect other people's view of you with that belief in yourself.

• 26:41Speaker 02

  Totally, totally.

• 26:42Dax Shepard?

That is like, yeah, we don't like articulate or break down what are the ingredients of confidence, but that's what it is. Like I've created a reality bubble and I've sucked you into it. And now you're not sure either if I'm a five or a nine.

• 26:53Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 26:54Dax Shepard?

  Right?

• 26:54Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 26:55Dax Shepard?

So you, I mean, there's so many things I would love to talk about. You go to a Stoner High School.

• 26:59Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 26:59Dax Shepard?

Kind of an outward bound thing?

• 27:01Speaker 02

Yeah, I did Urban Pioneers. That was kind of like an outward bound. It had a reputation for being for the flunkeys and I was flunking out of high school for sure. Cutting class, you know, smoking pot. And I heard about Urban Pioneers. It was supposed to be kind of, kind of rough.

• 27:16Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 27:17Speaker 02

Uh, but the guy Wayne McDonald kind of changed my life in a way because we did these like hiking trips for two weeks. But the thing about the, the hiking trips, you had to solicit this food. So you had to go to Pizza Hut and ask them to give you, you know, 10 cans of spaghetti sauce. I think the rule was you couldn't, even if you had money to buy the spaghetti sauce on the fly, you had to solicit. So it taught you to hustle.

• 27:40Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 27:42Speaker 02

  You know what I mean?

• 27:42Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 27:43Speaker 02

And. It was a cool lesson. He says, if you don't solicit this food, you're not gonna have margarine when you want it on the, on the trip. You're gonna need that margarine.

• 27:53Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 27:54Speaker 02

You need that loaf of bread.

• 27:56Dax Shepard?

There's gonna come a time where you're gonna want that margarine.

• 28:01Speaker 02

So, you know, you had to get the food, man.

• 28:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 28:03Speaker 02

You wanted to like have a marshmallow to roast.

• 28:05Speaker 01

  Right.

• 28:06Dax Shepard?

So you get the like real, real acting bug at that point.

• 28:10Speaker 02

I went back to the acting program. I auditioned for the play. I watched Malkovich and Death of a Salesman on TV. And I just decided to do that monologue. I got the play, but then I got a movie.

• 28:23Dax Shepard?

  In San Francisco?

• 28:24Speaker 02

In San Francisco. I got a lead in a film, my first film. And then I decided from that, with the confidence from doing the film, to go to New York and sort of pursue acting. And that's kind of what happened. I lived with my mom the first year. Then I started going to sublet to sublet, working in restaurants, and then I started getting commercials. And I got a couple of episodics like Equalizer and Law and Order.

• 28:47Dax Shepard?

You did all the shows every New York actor does. When I look at your resume.

• 28:49Speaker 02

  All that shit, NYPD.

• 28:51Dax Shepard?

  Yep.

• 28:51Speaker 02

And then I didn't know what, really what the hell I was doing. And I went to a summer program. I did the summer program with Bill. He says, do the two years. I said, ah, you know, I'm very busy. You know, I'm like 24.

• 29:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, making moves.

• 29:01Speaker 02

So what are you doing? He's like, you know, I got this Colgate commercial and, you know, I'm doing Law and Order. He's like, just do the two years. It'll go by like that. Just do it. So I did the two-year program and changed my life.

• 29:12Dax Shepard?

And it was Meisner. Still to this day, I don't, I read an actor prepares Stanislavski. But when people say Meisner, I'm not positive I know what it means.

• 29:19Speaker 02

Did you do any Meisner, did you do any training?

• 29:21Speaker 01

Yes, because I studied theater in college. And so, yeah, we had to do Meisner and stuff.

• 29:25Dax Shepard?

But for people who don't know what Meisner is.

• 29:27Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. So Stell Adler, you know, Strasberg, Meisner, went to Russia. They met Stanislavski. They came back. And they divided. Meisner's about the what if. And Strasberg was about what happened for an emotional prep. If so. But Meisner's argument to Strasberg is like, well, what are you gonna do if you're a heroin addict? Or if your character shoots yourself in the face? Like, what are you gonna really shoot yourself in the face? So method, meaning Strasberg.

• 29:55Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 29:55Speaker 02

Meisner would argue that using your imagination is more practical.

• 30:02Speaker 03

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert if you dare.

• 30:09Dax Shepard?

We are supported by Squarespace. So here's something I think about a lot. Most people I talk to on this show, the ones doing really interesting things, they all had a version of their work that existed before anyone else saw it. It was just theirs, notes, ideas, projects they were tinkering with. And then at some point, they made the decision to share it. That's the part that's scary, right? Going from, I'm working on something to here's what I made. Rob went through the exact same thing, building our site on Squarespace. And what made it doable was that he didn't have to become a web developer overnight. He just had to show up with the idea. Squarespace handles the rest. Beautiful templates that actually look like you hired someone, built in SEO, so people can find you, email campaigns, scheduling, analytics, all under one roof. No code, no patchwork of random tools.

• 30:53Dax Shepard?

And honestly, the thing I keep coming back to is how low the barrier is. If you've got something you've been building quietly and you're ready for people to see it, Squarespace makes that leap feel a lot less dramatic. Head to Squarespace.com/dax for a free trial. And when you're ready to launch, use offer code DAX to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain. We get support from Skims. Okay, I have a confession. I genuinely love matching pajamas. It's the best part of Christmas morning, really. Everyone in the same matching set, looking ridiculously cute in front of the tree.

• 31:30Speaker 01

I love matching pajamas. I'm literally going to be in coordinating sets with all my friends this holiday season because I got them, spoiler to my friends who are listening, the same Skims pajama set I've been living in. They are so soft and cozy and they look cute. So you can leave the house and go get a late night hot chocolate and be cozy.

• 31:50Dax Shepard?

It's so great how Skims has sets for everyone too. Women's, men's, kids, even your pets. So nobody in your life has to be left out this year.

• 32:00Speaker 01

I have a bunch of different pajama sets. One of my favorite is the organic cotton sleep long sleeve set.

• 32:07Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 32:08Speaker 01

It is so comfortable, very chic, too. The top is a button down, but very, very soft, easy to sleep in. But as I said before, you can multi-purpose this and look super cute.

• 32:20Dax Shepard?

Hot chocolate runs. It's like the pajamas we grew up in, except without the scratchy polyester that made opening presents feel more like a hot yoga class that nobody signed up for.

• 32:29Speaker 01

All the nostalgia, none of the discomfort. Shop my favorite loungewear and pajamas at skims.com. After you place your order, be sure to let them know we sent you. • 32:54Speaker 02

Tell me about Idiocracy. You and Justin and Maya Rudolph are fucking phenomenal. I love that movie. And I know Judd a little bit, but how did you come up with that character? How did Justin? You guys had scenes together, right?

• 33:06Dax Shepard?

We had no scenes together, but we hung out a bunch on the movie. That's like where we met and we would go out.

• 33:11Speaker 02

  You're hysterical in that.

• 33:12Dax Shepard?

  Oh, my God, thank you.

• 33:12Speaker 02

So what do you do? How did you prepare for that? And I want to ask Justin the same thing.

• 33:16Dax Shepard?

I had done a version of that character, Frito, on stage at the Grounds. And I was doing an episode of King of the Hill. I got along really well with Mike Judge and then two scripts of his were floating around. One of them was 3001 is what it was called. I read it and I said to him, I would love to come in and read this role for Frito. But he was written as like kind of morbidly obese. And he's like, well, I kind of had someone else in mind, you know? That wasn't, um, yeah, I don't know if that's the one for you. I begged him to let me come in.

• 33:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:45Dax Shepard?

And I did Frito, this character I'd already done before. And he was just like, oh, I could just hear him laughing, right? I was like, okay, that's all I was hoping. I'm like, yeah, I'm not the dude you wrote. It's not the right guy, but fuck, he's laughing and that's all I really wanted.

• 33:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 33:59Dax Shepard?

And then he cast me and then I gained like 25 pounds in three weeks.

• 34:04Speaker 02

Cause the guy had to be eating fructose and shit all the time or something.

• 34:07Dax Shepard?

Flachrin. I think he ate flachrin, so good.

• 34:12Speaker 02

How did you come up with the character for Groundlings? How did you come up with that initially? What was the impetus for that?

• 34:18Dax Shepard?

  She's so mad.

• 34:19Speaker 01

I'm not mad. I'm not mad at all, but we do have to learn about you, but that's fine.

• 34:24Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. All right, all right. I want to talk about your Meisner experience.

• 34:27Speaker 01

  No, God, no.

• 34:29Speaker 02

Well, no, we can turn it around on me. It's fine, but I'm just saying.

• 34:32Speaker 01

We have to learn about your mother.

• 34:36Speaker 02

Okay, all right. What do you want to know? But just quickly, Groundlings, how did it just came out of a suggestion from the audience?

• 34:42Dax Shepard?

No, no, we also wrote sketches, right? So half the show, like you came to a only improv show.

• 34:48Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 34:48Dax Shepard?

But generally the show there, the Sunday company, the Saturday company, it's all sketches and then you do like three improv sets during the show.

• 34:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:55Dax Shepard?

But mostly it's all written. It's all Saturday Night Live like sketches. And so the first time I ever did it was with Melissa McCarthy. And we worked at a grocery store and I was a bagger and she was a cashier and we were falling in love. And you can imagine Melissa McCarthy.

• 35:07Speaker 02

  That's so good.

• 35:08Dax Shepard?

  It was so fun.

• 35:09Speaker 02

  Was she a dummy too?

• 35:10Dax Shepard?

Absolutely, yeah. I was like, I got a tape deck in my truck. You want to listen to my cassettes?

• 35:16Speaker 01

  She talked like that too?

• 35:17Dax Shepard?

She had her own, fuck that. She had the female version of freedom.

• 35:20Speaker 02

You guys just said we're gonna do a.

• 35:21Dax Shepard?

We work at a grocery store and we're falling in love.

• 35:23Speaker 02

  And we're stupid.

• 35:24Dax Shepard?

And we're, yeah, we're stupid as it gets and we're made for each other.

• 35:28Speaker 02

  That's fucking amazing.

• 35:29Dax Shepard?

So excited to go listen to some cassette tapes in my truck. But all of this is based on the dude in high school who always talked about his uncle who was a tow truck driver. I mean, that's where it really comes from.

• 35:39Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 35:40Dax Shepard?

Is a guy, it's very exaggerated, but this.

• 35:43Speaker 01

No, I'm, no, just say it.

• 35:47Speaker 02

  What is it?

• 35:48Dax Shepard?

She just had Goggins look on her face. She was going, it was like a half smile.

• 35:51Speaker 02

  What is it?

• 35:52Dax Shepard?

It was like, wrap it up. She's telling me to wrap it up.

• 35:54Speaker 02

  Okay, okay.

• 35:55Dax Shepard?

Because the show's not about me.

• 35:56Speaker 01

He's normally not supposed to say out loud the thing I'm projecting, but he can't help himself.

• 36:01Dax Shepard?

Camera, it's fun to call him. Anyways, this guy was just always like, my uncle has a tow truck and I went out with them and we hooked up a brand new Trans Am.

• 36:13Dax Shepard?

  Wow, that is fantastic.

• 36:17Speaker 04

There are real people out there.

• 36:19Dax Shepard?

I don't know that I've ever had a new character since high school. I just accumulated all these kids I met and I was doing impersonations.

• 36:26Speaker 02

  The robots knew that's true.

• 36:27Speaker 04

He is a character, a robot character. It's very cute.

• 36:30Dax Shepard?

  What's the robot character?

• 36:32Speaker 04

I am a robot and I always talk like this. I wanna be a real boy. Yeah, the robot wants to be a real boy. It's really sad.

• 36:42Dax Shepard?

  It's a Pinocchio story, but he's got a cold and he's a robot.

• 36:47Dax Shepard?

Okay, we gotta get to you. You go to New York. Because you do have this really, really interesting section before, because you're a little older like me. When you finally start working consistently and you actually know, okay, this is gonna be a viable thing. Because your kind of breakthrough is like 28, you did a movie where you got a lot of attention.

• 37:05Speaker 02

Yeah, well, it's weird, you know, and this happened to my ex-girlfriend, Sarita. She was bartending and she'd done a movie with Denzel Washington and she got fucking recognized. And she was fucking bartending.

• 37:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 37:16Speaker 02

And I was like, this is weird. And then it happened to me. I was bussing tables. And I got recognized for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And I'm like, would you like some more bread, sir?

• 37:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 37:27Speaker 02

That's a weird experience. I mean, you have to go back to the restaurant.

• 37:30Dax Shepard?

  It's humbling, right?

• 37:30Speaker 02

Yeah, that's really humbling. You know, there's that story about Dustin Hoffman getting in the unemployment line after shooting The Graduate.

• 37:35Speaker 04

  Wow.

• 37:36Dax Shepard?

  It's crazy.

• 37:36Speaker 02

You know, because not everything pays, you know?

• 37:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 37:39Speaker 02

About 28, 29, I was starting to work more as an actor.

• 37:42Dax Shepard?

And were you busy in Labyrinth during that time?

• 37:45Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 37:46Dax Shepard?

So Labyrinth is this theater started by Philip Seymour Hoffman and...

• 37:49Speaker 02

Well, actually, no, it was started by Paul Calderon and his wife and Johnny Ortiz. And then Phil came in later and I was one of the first gringos in there. And then Phil came along and then he kind of reinvented it with Steven Gerges and Johnny Ortiz. They kind of took it over and it is what it is today.

• 38:07Dax Shepard?

And how did you get on with Phil?

• 38:09Speaker 02

Oh, Phil was a mentor and a close friend and he directed me in a play. You know, he was always the sober guy. I was just cheeseburgers, cigarettes and coffee usually. And then, uh... You know, that snuck up on us. And he was grumpy? He was grumpy, but in a, in an endearing way. Yeah. He had a great laugh. You know, he loved Justin. What the three of you somehow in like? He came up to Williamstown to direct a reading. Justin wanted to read art and Bradley came. Uh huh. And Bradley was already doing a play there and Phil said, yeah, I'll direct it. And we're like, really? And he's like, yeah, I'll come up. I'll direct it. He just wanted to hang out. Yeah. I remember we got in a car. You know, the fart app, you know? You ever seen the fart app? No. You know, the fart app. It makes every kind of different fart noises.

• 38:53Speaker 02

So Justin hooked it up to the car speaker in Williamstown. And um, wait, this is turned down.

• 39:03Speaker 02

That's the brown mosquito. Brown mosquito. This is the, this is called burrito maximo. Oh, yeah. Oh, God. This is called laundry day.

• 39:15Speaker 02

Now, now you know why it's called laundry day. So he hooked it up to the car speaker and Phil was in the back and he would just ask people randomly questions. Hey, do you know where the Pizza Hut? And they go, uh, yeah. And he just pushed the button. And it was, you know, because the car speaker was really loud. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And Phil had this very infectious laugh and he would laugh so fucking hard. Oh. Everyone was kind of intimidated by Phil, but he was a brilliant director. He, he directed us in a play and he was, the things he would say. Eric Pogozzi and I had a scene together and he would say these things to us that I never forgot. Eric and I had a scene where he was the devil and I was Judas. It was a funny scene and so it got a lot of laughs.

• 39:56Speaker 02

And Phil was like, you know, I know you guys get a lot of, you're getting a lot of laughs and that's all great, but I kind of wanna, I wanna make the audience uncomfortable. You know, that's what theater is about. And if you want to get laughs, that's cool. But, you know, he says, Sam, you're playing Judas Iscariot. You know, he's a danger to himself and others.

• 40:20Speaker 02

When you come out, you're drunk. I want you to make the audience a little uncomfortable. I want you to, like, I want them to like, maybe want to leave.

• 40:29Dax Shepard?

  Be a little scared.

• 40:30Speaker 02

Yeah. And that was a great thing to say to an actor because it's kind of an impossible goal.

• 40:36Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 40:37Speaker 02

So, I mean, Phil had a way of really inspiring you.

• 40:41Dax Shepard?

  Back to the charm thing.

• 40:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:42Dax Shepard?

I heard you tell a story about Bill. So, the acting teacher, the Meisner teacher.

• 40:45Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 40:46Dax Shepard?

He was an infamous teacher, like, a very famous.

• 40:48Speaker 02

And that's where I met my coach, Terry Knickerbocker.

• 40:50Dax Shepard?

Right, which is the most delightful story ever in showbiz. I love this story. We'll get to it.

• 40:56Speaker 02

  Yeah, okay.

• 40:56Dax Shepard?

But you talk about Bill at one point, basically saying like, "You're fucking lazy."

• 41:01Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. You said that to me.

• 41:03Dax Shepard?

Yes. And this is back to the charm thing.

• 41:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:07Dax Shepard?

No one's gonna feel bad for anyone who's charming. I'm not asking for that.

• 41:10Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 41:11Dax Shepard?

But I definitely think you have to be more self policing if you're charming. If you can kind of get away with murder.

• 41:16Speaker 02

  That's interesting.

• 41:17Dax Shepard?

Because you can get away with being lazy.

• 41:20Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 41:21Dax Shepard?

And so, it's weirdly like this wonderful gift you get given, but can also spell your demise.

• 41:25Speaker 02

It was a good lesson. And he said, "Yeah, that's so lazy. Like, pull it together." And it had a big effect on me.

• 41:31Dax Shepard?

Around this time, when you get the first thing, you're 29-ish, in the 90s still, you had met Terry. Terry Knickerbocker had filled in and taught some of the classes.

• 41:41Speaker 02

  That's right, yeah.

• 41:41Dax Shepard?

And you got along really well with him.

• 41:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:43Dax Shepard?

And you asked him to help you on this audition.

• 41:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:45Dax Shepard?

But this relationship you developed with Terry, you have not, not used him for a project since.

• 41:53Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's right. Yeah.

• 41:54Dax Shepard?

That's a very special relationship. That's like 26 years of doing that. I read an interview with him, talking about you guys working together. My understanding of what you guys do is, even for the White Lotus thing that we all saw.

• 42:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:07Dax Shepard?

You sit down with this thing, you're not an addict, right? So, we start with the fact that you don't, you, Sam Rockwell, doesn't know what it's like to be an addict. You're also not a Buddhist or an Eastern philosopher.

• 42:15Speaker 02

  No.

• 42:16Dax Shepard?

So, you and Terry's job is to start anchoring these details.

• 42:22Speaker 02

Particularism, what is it called? Yeah, particularizations, as if substitutions, sure.

• 42:26Dax Shepard?

So, you and Terry have done this for 26 years. And I'm assuming, when you're going through it together, you're exploring your own history.

• 42:37Dax Shepard?

And things that you can attach emotionally that resemble the thing.

• 42:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:42Dax Shepard?

And so these sessions with Terry have to be really therapeutic, no?

• 42:47Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. And he's a big therapy guy, too.

• 42:49Dax Shepard?

Are you free associating when you work with Terry?

• 42:51Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 42:51Dax Shepard?

And then letting everything out like, oh, wow, that's weird. That does remind me of blank.

• 42:55Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 42:56Speaker 01

  Like very intimate.

• 42:57Dax Shepard?

So is it fair to say Terry might know you in a way better than any person alive?

• 43:02Speaker 02

  Yes, and I him.

• 43:03Dax Shepard?

Now, as a super fan of yours, as I said I was, and I followed everything.

• 43:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:09Dax Shepard?

I had periods as a fan of yours where I was like, oh, no, why isn't this guy getting what he deserves? What is your emotional ride through all the highs and lows?

• 43:22Speaker 02

Yeah, I've had some, a lot of my shit's been afterlife.

• 43:25Dax Shepard?

Like I saw Moon and I was like, well, here we go, motherfuckers. It's on. What a performance.

• 43:30Speaker 02

Jesse James Galaxy Quest had Afterlife. I thought that was gonna be like Ghostbusters, you know? We went to the premiere.

• 43:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 43:36Speaker 02

And it did okay. But like Jesse James bombed. Even American Beauty beat out The Green Mile. But I've been lucky a couple, you know, like Vice and Charlie's Angels and stuff like that.

• 43:46Dax Shepard?

But there are like moments and then there's these lows and then there's these highs and then these lows. And then Three Billboards comes out and then you win an Academy Award. And again, to me at that, if I'm you.

• 43:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:56Dax Shepard?

And you're 49 at that point, maybe?

• 43:58Speaker 02

  That's right. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 44:00Dax Shepard?

Did you have a lot of these moments where it was like, okay, well, finally I can just take a breath and it's established and I'm safe?

• 44:07Speaker 02

I mean, every fucking day, you know, you're like, ah, can't I just relax?

• 44:11Dax Shepard?

Yeah, when are we gonna coast a little bit?

• 44:14Speaker 02

You can, as you know, as you get older, taking the working out stuff, for example, you gotta work even harder. You gotta memorize lines even harder as you get older.

• 44:22Dax Shepard?

I think you wanna feel safe. You wanna go, oh, I have finally earned the right.

• 44:26Speaker 02

You're never safe, as you know, right? You're never fucking safe.

• 44:29Dax Shepard?

It's all an illusion of safe.

• 44:30Speaker 02

  It's all an illusion.

• 44:31Speaker 01

  Yeah, it is.

• 44:32Dax Shepard?

You're such an artist. I don't say that lightly. I don't think of many people as artists. You're such an artist. I could have this fantasy where it's like, oh, no, he's never given a fuck. He finds another interesting thing to do. He focuses on that. And then another interesting thing, some of them pop, some of them don't. He doesn't care. He probably isn't motivated by money. Like I can create that fantasy about you, but I don't know if that's actually the reality.

• 44:52Speaker 02

I'm ambitious, whatever that means, you know, like you're ambitious to do good work. But I will say I have turned down money and I have said no. I mean, that's the only power you have is to say no.

• 45:02Dax Shepard?

Is that hard for you to do?

• 45:04Speaker 02

  Of course.

• 45:04Dax Shepard?

I was unable to do it. When they threw money at me, I always said yes. And then I paid the price ultimately for that.

• 45:11Speaker 02

Did you? Do you feel you paid the price for that?

• 45:14Dax Shepard?

Yeah, because I knew I shouldn't do a thing originally. That's why I said no to begin with. And then they threw enough money at me and I said, yeah, I'll do it for that. What if I never work again? I need that money.

• 45:23Speaker 02

All the rules have changed too. I think sometimes you can be too precious too, you know?

• 45:27Speaker 01

What do you hope people, if they had to finish this sentence about you as an actor? Let's say you're dead. Okay, sorry. For a long.

• 45:35Speaker 02

  Yes, Monica, I'm dead.

• 45:36Speaker 01

And people say, he was blank.

• 45:39Speaker 02

God, I had a good answer for that. Don't we always have a good answer on your gravestone kind of thing? And then I always forget.

• 45:45Dax Shepard?

I think I know what you would want.

• 45:46Speaker 02

  What? What's that?

• 45:47Dax Shepard?

  Either he was adventurous.

• 45:50Speaker 02

Yeah, that's pretty good. I like that.

• 45:52Dax Shepard?

  Which is also.

• 45:53Speaker 02

  You'd want that too, right?

• 45:54Dax Shepard?

  Slash brave.

• 45:55Speaker 02

  Yes, slash brave.

• 45:57Speaker 01

  Or dangerous.

• 45:59Dax Shepard?

I don't think you, do you want?

• 46:00Speaker 01

  Would you? Yeah.

• 46:00Speaker 02

Well, every actor needs a little bit of danger, I think.

• 46:05Speaker 01

What about you as a person? Forget.

• 46:06Speaker 02

  As a person?

• 46:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:08Speaker 02

Well, you know, I'm a pretty courteous, I'm a nice guy, but I mean. That's a good question. I don't know the answer to that. What would you want?

• 46:15Dax Shepard?

  He was so playful.

• 46:17Speaker 02

  Oh, that's pretty good.

• 46:18Dax Shepard?

I'm here to play. I came to this planet to play. And the more we can play, the better.

• 46:24Speaker 02

  Absolutely fucking looney.

• 46:26Dax Shepard?

Yeah, because it's a beat down. Everyone that you love is gonna die. All this shit's gonna happen.

• 46:30Speaker 02

You ever see Manny Pacquiao hit the mitts with Freddie Roach? He's smiling.

• 46:34Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 46:36Speaker 02

The relationship with those guys is really interesting.

• 46:38Dax Shepard?

  Freddie Roach is so fascinating.

• 46:40Speaker 02

Freddie Roach is amazing. And they're kind of patting the boxer on the head like they're kid.

• 46:44Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's play somehow.

• 46:46Speaker 02

  It's play.

• 46:47Dax Shepard?

You had a fun thing you're talking about in an interview. You're saying like, people are so shocked when actors act.

• 46:54Speaker 02

Yes, that's a good topic, actually. I find that fascinating.

• 46:57Dax Shepard?

I totally agree with you, but.

• 46:58Speaker 02

Christian Bale, like, that's a shocker? Why is that a shocker?

• 47:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 47:01Speaker 01

When they act out on set, you're saying?

• 47:03Speaker 02

Yeah, you pay somebody to essentially be a child.

• 47:06Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 47:06Speaker 02

And then you're shocked when they act like a child. It's like, what do you, what do you expect, man? One minute you're laughing, you're crying, you're like a little infant.

• 47:14Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 47:15Speaker 02

You're being paid to be an infant.

• 47:16Dax Shepard?

Yes, and then cut, and then somehow magically you feel like you did on Saturday morning. It's a little preposterous that that's the expectation.

• 47:25Speaker 02

It's insane. I was doing Poltergeist, you know, it's basically an abduction film where they abduct your daughter. But it's a ghost.

• 47:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 47:33Speaker 02

I did some scene where I was crying about my daughter and then I couldn't turn it off. And then I had to go.

• 47:40Dax Shepard?

  Have a nice cry.

• 47:41Speaker 02

A lot. Yeah. Take a break. Let it all hang out. Sometimes that happens.

• 47:46Dax Shepard?

Add in, I think the thing people don't necessarily realize is that everyone else's job is mechanical enough that it can be done. And you had a rehearsal. So camera's already done the dolly move 12 times. They have marks. They have all their settings. They're gonna do a good job. You're going to fail at your job many times in front of these 100 people.

• 48:07Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 48:07Dax Shepard?

You're gonna fail over and over again. Someone's gonna come talk to you.

• 48:09Speaker 02

By the way, they fail too. You know, it's out of focus.

• 48:12Dax Shepard?

But that's why, after you failed eight times, and you finally are getting it on nine, and a guy drops a flag into the shot, it's a bummer because you're coming from fear so often. You think that was the time.

• 48:26Speaker 02

Absolutely. You're coming from fear. Alison Lohman on Matchstick Men, she shot a scene, she had to cry and cry, and then it was out of focus and they had to go back. And that happens. Violet Davis did that on Doubt with Phil and Meryl Streep. That happened to her. She had to shoot something again. Very emotional.

• 48:42Dax Shepard?

How did you get on with Nick Cage in that Matchstick, man?

• 48:44Speaker 02

  We had a great time.

• 48:45Dax Shepard?

I feel like you two are both equally weird in a way that could either be flammable or really wonderful.

• 48:50Speaker 02

Well, you know, it's funny you mentioned Vince and Justin and I, we were hanging out. Like, we're doing these Elvis impersonations a lot. We would stay up late and do this improv that Elvis was at the parole board or something. And we would switch, take turns playing Elvis.

• 49:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 49:05Speaker 02

And Vince was always the best Elvis. And at the time, so I started doing basically Vince's version of Elvis for Nick Cage, and he had just gotten with Elvis's daughter.

• 49:16Dax Shepard?

Oh, right. And he's obsessed with Elvis, right?

• 49:18Speaker 02

Yeah. And he married her on the film, during the film. They broke up. So I realized, oh, maybe this is not cool. But he was cool with it. He was laughing.

• 49:29Dax Shepard?

We gotta talk about Bad Guys 2. I love Bad Guys. Bad Guys 1 is awesome.

• 49:33Speaker 02

Yeah, it's fun. As animation stuff, it's fun.

• 49:35Dax Shepard?

Yeah, the premise of part two is they're now good guys.

• 49:38Speaker 02

They're now good guys. They're on probation. And then hijinks ensue. Yeah.

• 49:43Dax Shepard?

And you have to be bad guys again.

• 49:44Speaker 02

Yes, and it's all Danielle's fault.

• 49:47Dax Shepard?

Yeah, we can't name it bad guys and not have you guys be bad.

• 49:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:51Dax Shepard?

Okay, you talk about Walken a lot.

• 49:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:54Dax Shepard?

Who are your favorites right now? Who are you horny for right now?

• 49:57Speaker 02

Christopher Walken always. Speaking of horned up, I forgot about the horned up elephant on the safari who almost killed us.

• 50:03Dax Shepard?

  Oh, tell me.

• 50:04Speaker 02

He was in heat, I guess, apparently, because everything was a little scary, but pretty pleasant elephants. And then on the way to the airport, this very angry elephant came and they said, well, he's in heat.

• 50:14Dax Shepard?

Was he dripping from the ears and shit?

• 50:16Speaker 02

We didn't get that close, thank God, but he was coming towards the car.

• 50:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 50:19Speaker 02

And apparently couldn't find a mate. He was tearing down trees.

• 50:22Speaker 01

Oh, no, he's like an incel.

• 50:23Speaker 02

  He was all horned up.

• 50:24Dax Shepard?

  He's an incel.

• 50:25Speaker 02

  Yeah, exactly.

• 50:26Dax Shepard?

  He's a 10,000 pound incel.

• 50:27Speaker 01

  Incel elephant.

• 50:28Speaker 02

Yeah. No, he was angry. But yeah, Chris Walken, John Malkovich, Juno Temples, fantastic.

• 50:34Dax Shepard?

  Oh, what a monster.

• 50:35Speaker 02

You know, Penya, I had a great time with Penya.

• 50:37Dax Shepard?

  He's so good.

• 50:38Speaker 02

I read the monologue with Penya, actually. We were in South Africa and he was like, you gotta do this.

• 50:43Speaker 01

I have a personal question about Leslie, because she just came up and it just made me think. First of all, how'd you guys meet? I don't know if I know this story.

• 50:50Speaker 02

We met at the Shet- it's so Hollywood. We've shot, don't remind. She likes that.

• 50:55Speaker 01

  I love, that's a meet cute.

• 50:56Dax Shepard?

  Did you get the bolognese?

• 50:57Speaker 02

It's a meet cute. Wait, huh? No, we used to eat the bolognese, yeah. Do they still have that there?

• 51:03Speaker 01

  Yeah, they do.

• 51:04Speaker 02

We, we met in the lobby and back then, you know, it was a little sketchy and there was a guy named Will, I think, and he introduced us. I knew I knew her from somewhere. It was like that Dreamweaver moment and we saw each other, eye contact. And then I realized it was Talladega and stuff. And then I heard she studied at Bill's studio.

• 51:24Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 51:25Speaker 02

And so I was like, oh, thank God, she's not a shitty actress.

• 51:28Speaker 01

  Right.

• 51:29Speaker 02

Because, you know, I like this girl, so.

• 51:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah. 18 years. Year 18.

• 51:34Speaker 02

  Is it 18? Yeah.

• 51:36Speaker 01

  That's impressive.

• 51:37Speaker 02

  You too, right?

• 51:38Dax Shepard?

Yes, but you travel so much. Extra impressive, I think.

• 51:41Speaker 02

We don't have kids, but we have a dog.

• 51:43Dax Shepard?

And you live in New York?

• 51:44Speaker 02

  We live in New York.

• 51:45Speaker 01

And it was a choice? No kids is a choice?

• 51:47Speaker 02

That's a choice, yeah. She just wanted dogs and I was like, all right, let's do the dogs.

• 51:51Speaker 01

  We'll stick with the dogs.

• 51:52Speaker 02

  Stick with the dogs, yeah.

• 51:54Dax Shepard?

Well, my only failure in this is I know there's something juicy with mom.

• 51:57Speaker 01

I know, I wanna know it. I can feel it.

• 51:59Dax Shepard?

I know there's something really juicy.

• 52:00Speaker 02

There's always something juicy with mom. I mean, I can tell. I mean, look at this.

• 52:06Dax Shepard?

Sorry, one last question. You did Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

• 52:10Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 52:10Dax Shepard?

This is again, this is before you came to see me in The Growlings.

• 52:12Speaker 02

Which, by the way, didn't do well initially, and George killed it.

• 52:16Dax Shepard?

Yes, great fucking movie. You're phenomenal. So for people who don't know, it's based on an autobiography by Chuck Barris, who was the host of The Gong Show.

• 52:25Speaker 02

Did you ever watch The Gong Show? You're too young for that, yeah.

• 52:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 52:27Speaker 02

  Oh, great show.

• 52:28Dax Shepard?

It's as game showy as it gets.

• 52:29Speaker 02

It's the best show of all time.

• 52:31Speaker 01

I wanna find it on YouTube.

• 52:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:32Dax Shepard?

And the host of the show, Chuck Barris,

• 52:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:35Dax Shepard?

wrote a book claiming he was a CIA operative, and then he had assassinated people.

• 52:39Speaker 02

And then Charlie Kaufman took the book and adapted it into an amazing screenplay.

• 52:43Dax Shepard?

And he stands by this story that he assassinated people while being a host of The Gong Show.

• 52:49Speaker 02

  He does.

• 52:49Dax Shepard?

You hung out with him a ton leading up to it.

• 52:51Speaker 02

George gave me a video camera and said, just go live with the guy.

• 52:54Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 52:55Dax Shepard?

And he was open to that.

• 52:56Speaker 02

Oh, he loved it. And then, uh, Mary, his wife, yeah, we hung out tons. He loved Les Paul.

• 53:03Dax Shepard?

  The guitarist?

• 53:03Speaker 02

Yeah, he loved the duo, and then he would air guitar, and he did all the lines for me.

• 53:09Dax Shepard?

Are you allowed to say what your kind of conclusion was? We don't think he really killed people.

• 53:13Speaker 02

I think he had a nervous breakdown.

• 53:14Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 53:15Speaker 02

And felt probably that, although he created the dating game and he did a lot of cool shit, maybe he didn't feel good about things, and he probably made stuff up. But then again, sometimes, I wonder, because sometimes he would say stuff for resting, and you'd kind of go, wait a minute.

• 53:31Speaker 01

I mean, whether it's true or not, he probably believed it.

• 53:33Speaker 02

I think he did. I'd say, how many people did you kill? And he'd say, oh, about 10, or 12. And I'd say, really? Wow.

• 53:40Dax Shepard?

You'd say, how many people did you kill?

• 53:42Speaker 02

Yeah, we got into it. One of the best scenes we had to cut, I think it's deleted scenes. Fred Savage plays the bellhop. There's these great scenes with the bellhop.

• 53:50Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 53:51Speaker 02

That are just amazing. And I'm like naked with a beard. It's some of my favorite stuff. It's just the movie was too long, but we had a good time with that.

• 54:00Dax Shepard?

Have you heard Elvis talk about the bellhops?

• 54:02Speaker 02

No. What happened with the bellhops?

• 54:04Dax Shepard?

There's a great bit of footage online.

• 54:06Speaker 02

Of course, he talks about bellhops, yeah.

• 54:08Dax Shepard?

He's on stage, and he has missed some shows, and it's at the height of people accusing him of being an opiate addict, which of course he was.

• 54:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 54:17Dax Shepard?

And he goes, I just wanted to tell everybody. I'm healthy and I'm not doing drugs. I'm doing karate. And you know,

• 54:26Dax Shepard?

he goes, all this comes from those, those little bell hops. Those little rats running around. He's got this whole. Is this at the end? Yeah, yeah, he might even be laying down on stage on his back telling this. Wow. But he's talking about the bell hops and they're the ones that spread the rumors about him. These little bell hops. And you. Wow. Yeah, it's great. That's online. You could watch him. Don't you always wanted to play, remember Kurt Russell as Elvis? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He's just fascinating character. My brother and I were obsessed with him when we were little kids. My brother's your age. Yeah. And we would call when we were at a hotel, we would call the front desk over and over again. Cause we thought it was so funny that Elvis would shoot his TV sets in hotel rooms. And we just were like, what else did he do?

• 55:08Dax Shepard?

So we would call down to the front desk at like 10 and 15 and go, well, this is the king in 304. I accidentally filled up my bathtub with a lot of sausage.

• 55:19Dax Shepard?

Could you send somebody up to get all this sausage out? And it's just like, we try to think of insane things we could call and say had happened in the hotel room. The banana Cocoa Puff sandwich or whatever. You gotta see Vince's Elvis. Well, everybody, see Bad Guys Two, that's out August second. You're a delight. I told Monica. You guys are a delight. I saw you. You're a ravishing delight. Calendar and I was giddy. I'm giddy. I'm horny for you. I'm horny for you, pal. I'm attracted to you and I'm so glad you came. And how horny are we for Stanley Tucci? Come on.

• 55:48Speaker 01

  Oh, the Toots.

• 55:50Dax Shepard?

We love Stanley. All right. Well, Rockwell, this has been so fun.

• 55:52Speaker 01

  Thanks for coming.

• 55:53Dax Shepard?

Thank you, thank you very much. Thank you very much. I had a little accident. I can take them sausages in my bathtub. All right. Meanwhile, everyone see Bad Guys Two. Check it out, man.

• 56:05Speaker 03

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert if you dare.

• 56:13Speaker 04

He's an armchair expert, but he makes mistakes all the time. Thank God Monica's here. She's gonna let him have the facts.

• 56:23Speaker 01

We have this very special guest.

• 56:25Dax Shepard?

We have the most special guest. My grandson Groot is here. And there's a, there's an explanation for this. I don't want people to think I'm now someone who travels around.

• 56:36Speaker 01

  Or you're exploiting him.

• 56:37Dax Shepard?

I don't want anyone to think I'm exploiting him or trying to get ratings, although obviously this will be a ratings boom because he's so charismatic and cute.

• 56:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:44Dax Shepard?

And, um, but the reason he had to join us for the fact check, I posted a picture of Groot on Instagram doing a driving lesson in the truck. And I think the perspective of him, because the camera is right in front of him and I'm in the deep back. The comments are almost unanimously, "Oh my God, Groot is humongous."

• 57:07Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 57:08Dax Shepard?

"How did he get lost?" "How big was the bag holding him and how would you lose this bag?" To the degree I was like, I think people think he's three feet tall now because of the perspective of the photo.

• 57:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 57:20Dax Shepard?

So last night we were in bed and I asked Delta if it would be okay if Groot came on a fact check.

• 57:26Speaker 01

  Prove his size.

• 57:28Dax Shepard?

Yes, to demonstrate his actual size. And she talked to him and he said, "Yeah, he's super excited."

• 57:34Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 57:34Dax Shepard?

And so he had three different outfits that he was debating between and we landed on this one.

• 57:40Speaker 01

  We can't move the-

• 57:41Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I'm gonna move the bag. So he has a little bag. He's a little, his little Gelson's bag. I can't wait to show you what's inside his bag.

• 57:49Dax Shepard?

Also, he has a Stanley. He has his own Stanley. And it says Detroit, Michigan on it.

• 57:56Speaker 01

  How did he get that?

• 57:57Dax Shepard?

I don't know, but he knows, I guess he knows his granddad's from Michigan or his grandma.

• 58:01Speaker 01

  And both.

• 58:02Dax Shepard?

But he has his own Stanley that says Detroit, Michigan on it. Yeah. And he has this incredible.

• 58:08Speaker 01

He has a great outfit on.

• 58:10Dax Shepard?

He does. He has little, um, uh, coveralls like me. What are they called? What am I wearing?

• 58:15Speaker 01

  Oh, overalls.

• 58:16Dax Shepard?

  Overalls.

• 58:16Speaker 01

  Are they?

• 58:17Dax Shepard?

Yeah, cuz he, if I unbutton.

• 58:18Speaker 01

  Oh, okay.

• 58:19Dax Shepard?

  I don't wanna unbutton.

• 58:20Speaker 01

  He's wearing a sweater, too.

• 58:21Dax Shepard?

Delta was very specific about what he was supposed to wear.

• 58:23Speaker 01

  Don't mess with him.

• 58:23Dax Shepard?

But I can just show you. It's, it's overalls.

• 58:26Speaker 01

Okay, it's, it's overalls with some frill.

• 58:29Dax Shepard?

Yep, and the beautiful red overalls, and then a gorgeous cardigan sweater over that.

• 58:34Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 58:34Dax Shepard?

And he has his cool shoes on, and he has his Stanley cup, and then, do you wanna know what's in his bag?

• 58:39Speaker 01

Yeah, he has a tiny bag from Gelson's, which is an LA grocery store.

• 58:43Dax Shepard?

Yep, he has his Mac, so he can do some work. His little tiny Mac, his size. And it's a real Mac. It looks just like a Mac. And, um, are you ready for this?

• 58:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 58:57Dax Shepard?

I didn't even know that this was his favorite book. Hogwarts. It's a miniature Harry Potter.

• 59:03Speaker 01

  It is not.

• 59:04Dax Shepard?

It's a Harry Potter book. Groot loves Harry Potter.

• 59:07Speaker 01

Of course Groot loves Harry Potter.

• 59:10Dax Shepard?

What a sweet, isn't he the sweetest boy?

• 59:12Speaker 01

  Yes, I love Groot.

• 59:13Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, he's so special.

• 59:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:16Dax Shepard?

And if you want, at any point, to have him with you, just say the word.

• 59:20Speaker 01

We got in a little fight earlier because I asked if I could hold Groot, and you said we could both hold Groot.

• 59:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 59:27Speaker 01

And I said, but you always get to hold Groot. Why don't I get to hold Groot the whole time?

• 59:31Dax Shepard?

  The whole time.

• 59:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:32Dax Shepard?

Yeah. You didn't wanna share Groot.

• 59:34Speaker 01

No, cuz I don't get enough time with Groot.

• 59:37Dax Shepard?

No, cuz I don't like to share.

• 59:38Speaker 01

Well, not when I don't get any other time. And we have a little reward for him that Delta made, um, for when he's done.

• 59:45Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, hold that up.

• 59:46Speaker 01

With his appearance. It's, um, a Groot beer float.

• 59:50Dax Shepard?

  A Groot beer float.

• 59:51Speaker 01

That she made, and if you aren't watching, you, you have to turn this on YouTube right now.

• 59:57Dax Shepard?

To see the Groot beer float.

• 59:58Speaker 01

To see this, this incredible, she made it out of maple syrup and milk.

• 1:00:03Dax Shepard?

He has an entire miniature world.

• 1:00:05Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:00:05Dax Shepard?

I mean, he's got his own computer and his Hogwarts book.

• 1:00:08Speaker 01

It's incre- I like, I wanna be him.

• 1:00:11Dax Shepard?

I do, too. I said to her last night, when she was trying on his different outfits, I said, "Look, when I come back in my next life, I would love to be Groot and be under your care, cuz he gets spoiled." Do you have any interesting, um, stories? Cuz...

• 1:00:24Speaker 01

  I do.

• 1:00:24Dax Shepard?

  You do?

• 1:00:25Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:00:25Dax Shepard?

Okay, me, too. Let's hear yours.

• 1:00:26Speaker 01

  I have a few stories.

• 1:00:28Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:00:28Speaker 01

Um, I think I'd like to hold Groot for this story.

• 1:00:31Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:33Speaker 01

Come here, Groot. Come here, Groot. Come here. In case he gets thirsty. Okay.

• 1:00:44Speaker 01

Have a little bit. Let's put it here so it's close.

• 1:00:48Dax Shepard?

  Okay. Okay.

• 1:00:49Speaker 01

  Now.

• 1:00:52Dax Shepard?

This is like practice, Monica. This could be the tipping point for you.

• 1:00:55Speaker 01

  Why don't I just get a group?

• 1:00:56Dax Shepard?

You might want to just get a crew, yeah. It seems to be very, God, he's smiling right at me. Yeah, this is preferred. I can't even believe I was fighting to hold him because it's equally as fun just to see him.

• 1:01:07Speaker 01

Yeah, he's so cute to look at.

• 1:01:08Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, he's so happy.

• 1:01:09Speaker 01

Um, anyway, so I have, uh, I had a ethical dilemma.

• 1:01:16Dax Shepard?

  Ooh, I like ethical dilemmas.

• 1:01:18Speaker 01

So Callie and I went to a store, as we do, we shop.

• 1:01:25Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:25Speaker 01

And we went and got lunch after. And we were on Third Street, which isn't that close. We're not there a lot.

• 1:01:32Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:01:32Speaker 01

So I guess I'm not, I don't know why that's important. To me, for some reason, it's important. I was out of sorts.

• 1:01:40Dax Shepard?

I've been there nonstop. Just sim. I would never go to Third Street in my real life.

• 1:01:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:01:45Dax Shepard?

But I have to take Lincoln there.

• 1:01:47Speaker 01

  For.

• 1:01:47Dax Shepard?

  Several times during the weekend.

• 1:01:49Speaker 01

Yes. I guess I'm just, I was a little out of sorts because I wasn't in my normal spot.

• 1:01:53Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:54Speaker 01

And we have lunch and we're walking back to our cars and there is a unhoused woman.

• 1:02:00Dax Shepard?

Oh my, this is impossible because my story also involves this, but go ahead.

• 1:02:04Speaker 01

Okay. Um, there was an unhoused woman. I mean, there was multiple unhoused people that we passed, but there was one specific woman who was on the opposite side of the street and, and just, you know, screaming, um, nonsensical words and.

• 1:02:20Dax Shepard?

Angry or because there's many versions of the screaming. Sometimes it's really quite angry and sometimes it's just like they're talking to someone that can't hear them.

• 1:02:28Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:02:28Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:29Speaker 01

So angry, yes, angry, uh, but kind of hard to tell. If you just glanced at her, you probably, you might not know she was unhoused or dealing with a mental issue, which she clearly was both. So anyway, we crossed the street and then all of a sudden.

• 1:02:47Speaker 01

  She is walking towards us.

• 1:02:51Dax Shepard?

She locks on to you guys.

• 1:02:52Speaker 01

  And is screaming at us.

• 1:02:56Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:02:57Speaker 01

And that, for people who don't live in LA and don't encounter a lot of unhoused people, that's not normally the case. So they are often like screaming or making noise or talking and they're, but they're in their own world.

• 1:03:11Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:12Speaker 01

And they're never normally, when they're in that state of mind, engaging with you.

• 1:03:19Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:03:20Speaker 01

So this was very weird. She was, she was looking right at us and she was talking to us. Like we had become the enemy.

• 1:03:28Dax Shepard?

  Oh, oh, wow.

• 1:03:29Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 1:03:30Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:03:30Speaker 01

  And I-

• 1:03:31Dax Shepard?

  How old was she roughly?

• 1:03:32Speaker 01

  I would say forty.

• 1:03:34Dax Shepard?

  Okay, so roughly your age?

• 1:03:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:03:36Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:03:36Speaker 01

  Maybe forty-two or something.

• 1:03:38Dax Shepard?

So quite a bit older than you.

• 1:03:40Speaker 01

A lot older. Um, she is beelining towards us, screaming, screaming, fuck you, fuck you! And she's so mad. She is so mad. You wanna fight?

• 1:03:52Dax Shepard?

  Oh, my god. Whoa.

• 1:03:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:03:55Dax Shepard?

  This is your nightmare.

• 1:03:56Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:03:57Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:58Speaker 01

And I, I, this is my nightmare mixed with, I'm pretty actually weirdly good in these situations of clicking into, how do, I, I don't freeze. I'm surviving this, you know? And she is, she is gunning at me and Callie was like, okay, okay. Like she was starting, she was kind of engaging with her. Like, okay, okay.

• 1:04:19Dax Shepard?

Kelly's a little bit more like me?

• 1:04:20Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:04:21Dax Shepard?

  No. She's like you.

• 1:04:23Speaker 01

I, I think she's like neither. Like she, she's not gonna confront that person.

• 1:04:31Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:04:31Speaker 01

But she's also, like one time in college, her and I were walking in the dark and there was like kind of some crazy guys, like driving by and they turned around in their car and I just grabbed her and like we, I ran her into this like hooded area.

• 1:04:48Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:04:49Speaker 01

  So I take charge.

• 1:04:50Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:04:50Speaker 01

She was just gonna stand there.

• 1:04:52Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:04:52Speaker 01

Okay. So, so then she's coming at me and I-

• 1:04:58Speaker 01

Left turn and sort of run into this laundromat.

• 1:05:01Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:05:01Speaker 01

And I assumed that Callie was either.

• 1:05:05Dax Shepard?

You ditched her. You left her on her own.

• 1:05:08Speaker 01

I assumed she was either with me coming.

• 1:05:11Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:11Speaker 01

Or because I was like diverting the attention away that she could just run forward, run away.

• 1:05:19Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:05:19Speaker 01

And then neither of those things happened. She didn't run and, and then the woman, as when I turned, she turned and went after Callie and was calling her the N word.

• 1:05:29Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:05:31Speaker 01

  Screaming the N word.

• 1:05:32Dax Shepard?

Callie just for the record is extremely white. Just throwing it out there.

• 1:05:35Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 1:05:35Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:36Speaker 01

Um, and so I'm just in the laundromat feeling like I force majeured.

• 1:05:41Dax Shepard?

Force majeure is when a, uh, uh, an event that is, uh, biblical or.

• 1:05:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:05:46Dax Shepard?

  Mother nature.

• 1:05:47Speaker 01

No, you know, the movie Force Majeure?

• 1:05:49Dax Shepard?

  Oh, no, I don't.

• 1:05:50Speaker 01

Yes, you do. It's the one with the avalanche. So it's a.

• 1:05:54Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes.

• 1:05:55Speaker 01

Swedish movie called Force Majeure where a family is on a mountain.

• 1:06:00Dax Shepard?

  On a ski vacation.

• 1:06:02Speaker 01

An avalanche and the dad ditches the family.

• 1:06:05Dax Shepard?

Not only does he ditch, he kind of steps over one of the kids to run away. Yeah.

• 1:06:09Speaker 01

  They don't die.

• 1:06:11Dax Shepard?

  Right. It doesn't hit anyone.

• 1:06:12Speaker 01

It doesn't hit anyone. So then they all have to get back together, knowing that the dad just did that. Okay. So I feel like I force majeured.

• 1:06:20Dax Shepard?

Okay. That makes a lot more sense.

• 1:06:22Speaker 01

And I, I told her, cause then all of a sudden she pokes her head over to the laundromat window and like starts waving. And so I come out and I was like, how, did you go into somewhere? And she was like, no, she just ran after me and started calling me the N word. And I was like, why'd you? And then I felt really guilty and she told me not to feel guilty, but it really, it really, I haven't been able to stop thinking about. I don't know if Gru should have heard this.

• 1:06:47Dax Shepard?

Yeah, no, it's a great story that he needs to know about.

• 1:06:51Speaker 01

His Aunt Monica? I'll never leave you.

• 1:06:54Dax Shepard?

He needs to hear these so that he'll know when it's time, this kind of situation happens to him.

• 1:07:02Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:07:02Dax Shepard?

He's already heard it played out. So he might decide A, that he likes that and they'll already have a game plan. Or he might decide, oh, she regretted that. I'm gonna, um, make sure I always grab my friend.

• 1:07:12Speaker 01

  I didn't.

• 1:07:13Dax Shepard?

What? You just, I'm just, I'm parodying exactly what you.

• 1:07:16Speaker 01

I know. I'm just saying I feel guilty.

• 1:07:19Dax Shepard?

But she said, you don't need to.

• 1:07:20Speaker 01

It was bad. It was bad.

• 1:07:22Dax Shepard?

Where did she end up? Like, how long were you in this laundromat?

• 1:07:27Speaker 01

  Not that long.

• 1:07:28Dax Shepard?

  A minute or two.

• 1:07:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:07:29Dax Shepard?

Okay, so she just carried on. She didn't like get into.

• 1:07:33Speaker 01

Also, I really felt like I really felt as soon as I entered the laundromat, like I was in some sort of movie.

• 1:07:40Dax Shepard?

Oh, uh huh. Yeah, cuz it was an extreme situation.

• 1:07:42Speaker 01

It was such an extreme situation.

• 1:07:43Dax Shepard?

Could only be happening in a movie.

• 1:07:44Speaker 01

Yeah, and then you end up in this laundromat where there's like music.

• 1:07:47Dax Shepard?

And then you're in everywhere, everywhere all the time.

• 1:07:50Speaker 01

And there's two people just sitting there kind of like looking at me cuz I ran in like all like.

• 1:07:54Dax Shepard?

Like a guy with a knife was chasing you.

• 1:07:57Speaker 01

And I was like, that was cra- there's a crazy.

• 1:07:59Dax Shepard?

But you start talking to strangers.

• 1:08:01Speaker 01

  To them, but they didn't.

• 1:08:02Dax Shepard?

And now you're her. Well, they all ran. They ran next door to the dry cleaner.

• 1:08:07Speaker 01

Yeah, it was, it was wild. But yeah, she told me not to. I really think, my fast thinking was, we gotta get out of this person's.

• 1:08:18Dax Shepard?

What's the closest she was to you?

• 1:08:20Speaker 01

  Really close.

• 1:08:21Dax Shepard?

What's really close? One foot, 10 feet, 25 feet?

• 1:08:23Speaker 01

  Uh, where your knee is.

• 1:08:26Dax Shepard?

  Okay, so six feet.

• 1:08:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:08:29Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:29Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:08:30Dax Shepard?

Yeah. If my head was here, my feet would touch your face, I think.

• 1:08:33Speaker 01

Right. So she's charging, charging. By the time she gets to your like knee or calf is when I bolt to the left.

• 1:08:39Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I'm outta here.

• 1:08:40Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:08:40Dax Shepard?

Light or flight, and it was flight.

• 1:08:42Speaker 01

It was flight, but it was also like, Callie, go!

• 1:08:46Dax Shepard?

Right. Now, so now you're kind of resentful at Callie, too.

• 1:08:48Speaker 01

  Well, I'm like.

• 1:08:49Dax Shepard?

You feel maybe guilty and resentful?

• 1:08:51Speaker 01

  Yeah, both.

• 1:08:52Dax Shepard?

  Sure, sure, sure.

• 1:08:52Speaker 01

Like, take care of yourself. Go into a location.

• 1:08:55Dax Shepard?

Yeah. But you bounced, she stayed there, and then the gal obviously didn't close the gap entirely and touch Callie, right? She didn't touch her.

• 1:09:03Speaker 01

  No, she didn't.

• 1:09:04Dax Shepard?

Okay. So, last night, I'm gonna say we, but really Kristen. Kristen has, she wants things to be recycled in a particular way where they don't really just put it in a landfill. There's a service you can use in LA, or you have a box and you put all this recycling, they actually take it to certified places that turn into park benches or whatever the heck the thing is. And so it's this. Um, box that's probably like 18 inches wide by 18 inches deep by 18 inches tall, maybe 24 inches tall. So it's a good sized metal box and it sits in front of our house with those items in it and then they pick them up in these bags. So Kristin comes in and she goes, um, a homeless dude took the box and um, he's on the uh, bus stop bench.

• 1:09:49Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:09:50Dax Shepard?

And I, I need, I need to get it back.

• 1:09:52Speaker 01

  Oh, no.

• 1:09:52Dax Shepard?

And I go, okay, yeah, I'll go get it. And she goes, well, but you can't go out there because there's a paparazzi out there.

• 1:09:57Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:09:58Dax Shepard?

And I'm like, oh my God, this is like, all of a sudden, there's a lot going on.

• 1:10:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:10:03Dax Shepard?

I'm like, where's the paparazzi? And she, this is an age old debate. I get it. It's frustrating to live with me. Like, it's not sufficient. You can't just tell me I can't do something. I gotta like know exactly why I can't do it. This is annoying part of me. So now I kinda wanna see the paparazzi. So I'm not trying to look over the fence. And she's like, what, what do you do? I told you what's going on. Why do you not, you know?

• 1:10:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:10:21Dax Shepard?

That passes. Everything's groovy. And I have ordered food. So now when I get the food, now we're going on 30 minutes later. When I get the food, sure enough, there's a dude with a huge telephoto lens, like, you know, 20 feet away, talking to the delivery guy and everything. And um, I'm like, oh God. Cause yes, I cannot go get a box back from a homeless person.

• 1:10:43Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:10:44Dax Shepard?

While a paparazzi is taking photos. God knows what people's assumption of that scenario would be. So suffice to say, a, a good hour and a half goes by before the paparazzi guy leaves in front of the house. So now I'm like, okay, I gotta go get that box. She really wants this box. Now, side note, maybe Rob will understand this. You're not watching Mobland, right?

• 1:11:06Speaker 01

  Mm-mm.

• 1:11:07Dax Shepard?

God, I want you to watch it so bad. It's so good. But Tom Hardy's job is, he works for a criminal family and he has to clean up all the shit that goes wrong. And he just says, yes, I'll go handle it. And he just does a very man a few words and he just, and he handles everything. He can fix everything.

• 1:11:23Speaker 01

That's like on you, the show.

• 1:11:24Dax Shepard?

That's like the TV show, You. Okay, so I go outside, look at the park bench, at the park bench, the bus stop. He's not there.

• 1:11:33Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:11:34Dax Shepard?

My fuck, I gotta get this box. So now I get in the car and now I start driving around. And I'm driving around for a while. And at some point, I'm like, oh, I'm like Tom Hardy, like, I gotta get this box. It's somewhere in the city. God knows, but I'm not coming home until I find this box.

• 1:11:50Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:11:50Dax Shepard?

I'm driving all the way down to the 101. I'm on Hollywood Boulevard, I'm on all the side streets.

• 1:11:54Speaker 01

  For him specifically?

• 1:11:55Dax Shepard?

I'm looking for the box. I've gotta get the box back.

• 1:11:58Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:11:59Dax Shepard?

  And the metal box.

• 1:12:01Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:12:01Dax Shepard?

I'm driving around for a while. I'm like, I got my hazards on at times, because there's a lot, there's, as you know, in LA, there's a lot of people to look at to see, oh, do they have the box? All to say, I eventually come upon him, see a guy on another bus stop bench, and I look, oh, there's the box. Yeah, and I was like, oh yeah, I'm Tom Hardy, I found the box. Like, I've been driving around for a long time and I didn't give up and I found the box. I wanna exaggerate so bad.

• 1:12:33Speaker 01

  Do the real thing.

• 1:12:36Dax Shepard?

  20 minutes.

• 1:12:37Speaker 01

Okay, that is a long time.

• 1:12:38Dax Shepard?

I will say, I think a lot of people would have given up.

• 1:12:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:12:41Dax Shepard?

So I went in the immediate area and was going, you know, and then I went, um, so then I just go, I go up to the, the guy and I go, hey, brother, that's, um, that's my box I gotta get back. And he's immediately nice. He's like, oh, sorry. And I go, yeah, no problem. I grabbed the box and he's like, oh, I have my stuff. Can I get my stuff up? Now, I'm speaking a lot more coherently than he was, but I'm like, yeah, of course. So, you know, it's still got all the bags of recycling stuff and we go through that. And then there's weed pipes and all kinds of other.

• 1:13:06Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:13:07Dax Shepard?

  Just a bunch of stuff.

• 1:13:08Speaker 01

  Things he put in there.

• 1:13:09Dax Shepard?

Bunch of Ziploc bags with God knows what. And, um, he got his stuff back and then I gave him 20 bucks. And then I got the box and I came home and I felt like such a hero.

• 1:13:18Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:13:18Dax Shepard?

I really did. I felt like I was Tom Hardy. My wife needed this box. It was somewhere in LA. I found it and I did it without, completely without incident.

• 1:13:27Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's great.

• 1:13:28Dax Shepard?

Um, and, you know, as I'm driving around, I'm anticipating all the many outcomes of this. It could be I say, hey, that's my box. He says, fuck you, it's not my box. I'm coming home with the box, trust me.

• 1:13:39Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:13:40Dax Shepard?

And I, what I loved about it is, it was like, I'm willing to participate in any option. I want the nice option. And it was the nice option and it felt quite good.

• 1:13:53Speaker 01

  That is good.

• 1:13:54Dax Shepard?

Yeah, cuz he got twenty, I got the box back, everyone was happy and it was an adventure.

• 1:13:59Speaker 01

  Great.

• 1:14:00Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:01Speaker 01

  I.

• 1:14:01Dax Shepard?

Isn't it funny that both of us had?

• 1:14:03Speaker 01

  Incidents.

• 1:14:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:05Speaker 01

  Yeah, it is. It's unfortunate.

• 1:14:08Dax Shepard?

What's crazy is how completely normalized it is if you live here cuz I'm thinking if I was still in Milford, Michigan, listening to the story, like the notion that I would daily be writing to someone screaming at the top of their lungs obscenities and racial slurs, which is just like standard fucking business.

• 1:14:26Speaker 01

It is, it is, I know, I was driving by the gas station the other day and there was a woman there just standing, you know, just standing, talking to herself and I barely know, you know, I barely noticed and then I was like, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, we are. We, we are so desensitized to it.

• 1:14:48Dax Shepard?

  Well, you have to.

• 1:14:49Speaker 01

It's not our, it's not like a fault of ours.

• 1:14:52Dax Shepard?

  It would kill you otherwise.

• 1:14:54Speaker 01

  Yes, exactly.

• 1:14:55Dax Shepard?

You really don't have a choice. You're kind of like.

• 1:14:58Speaker 01

Or you have to move, like you either, yeah, it's really, but I saw a advanced screening last night of Eddington, which is an upcoming movie, it premiered at Cannes. It has a lot of really cool people in it, all of whom I would love to have on the show. It is quite dark, but, but funny.

• 1:15:19Dax Shepard?

  What's it about?

• 1:15:20Speaker 01

So it takes place during COVID in New Mexico.

• 1:15:24Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:15:24Speaker 01

And things, that's all I can kind of say, like, it's a lot of things ensue and.

• 1:15:32Dax Shepard?

A wild poster, it's got a bunch of American buffalo, bison, uh, running off the side of a steep cliff and they're in various states of tumbling to their death.

• 1:15:41Speaker 01

It pokes fun at, I would say, everyone during that time. I mean, twenty, it starts in May twenty twenty and obviously a lot is happening at the time, the pandemic, Black Lives Matter. The movie starts with a unhoused person kind of on this rant.

• 1:16:00Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:16:01Speaker 01

And that's what made me think of it, but, um, it's very thought provoking and funny, like we all, everyone across the board went a bit crazy.

• 1:16:12Dax Shepard?

  Oh, absolutely.

• 1:16:13Speaker 01

  And.

• 1:16:14Dax Shepard?

  Both sides.

• 1:16:15Speaker 01

You get to see that and it's, um.

• 1:16:19Speaker 01

And it's, it's, it's good. I think a lot of people are gonna be talking about it when it comes out. So, so shout out to Eddington and Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone. Please come on this show.

• 1:16:33Dax Shepard?

Also, three of the 10 best actors alive, right there.

• 1:16:37Speaker 01

  I know. Joaquin, Joaquin Phoenix.

• 1:16:40Dax Shepard?

  Is a phenom.

• 1:16:41Speaker 01

  Is such a special actor.

• 1:16:44Dax Shepard?

  Oh, absolutely.

• 1:16:45Speaker 01

  He's in that Heath category.

• 1:16:47Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:16:48Speaker 01

And it's so compelling. He's just so compelling.

• 1:16:51Dax Shepard?

  In all the ways.

• 1:16:53Speaker 01

  Yeah, this, this.

• 1:16:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, the tenderness.

• 1:16:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:55Dax Shepard?

Yeah. I've hung with him a few times and I am completely charmed by him and think he's so wonderful. How's it going, Groot? He's at work with, take your grandson to work day.

• 1:17:07Speaker 01

Yeah. Do you need to hold him again?

• 1:17:10Dax Shepard?

I love looking at his little smile. Have you seen Sinner?

• 1:17:14Speaker 01

  Not yet.

• 1:17:15Dax Shepard?

Oh, man. I saw it and I immediately, of course, wanted to talk to Joy about it and I just hadn't. I had been busy. And then this morning, after I dropped Delt off, I called her and we had like a 45 minute conversation about it.

• 1:17:28Speaker 01

What did she have to say? Is there anything you can say if people haven't seen it?

• 1:17:32Dax Shepard?

It just led to this incredible conversation between us about blackness, whiteness, masculinity, socioeconomic stuff, identity. How complex it all is and how special the resilience of that group of people is and what has been the product of that. Yeah, black people. The product has been the best art that this country has created.

• 1:17:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:17:57Dax Shepard?

Is out of that, uh, heartache and.

• 1:18:01Speaker 01

  Art, athletics, everything.

• 1:18:04Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Well, I mean, one aspect of it is, is there's, there's also some Irish stuff happening in it. And Joy was saying when she first saw it, she's like, why is there an Irish jig in this movie? And I was like, um, and I haven't read anything about it. She's read a ton about it. One of her best friends is in it, so.

• 1:18:19Speaker 01

  Oh, cool.

• 1:18:20Dax Shepard?

She had gone to like an early screening. And I said, well, what did the things you read say? Because I immediately went like, yeah, that's true of the Irish too. Like, they were, you know, discarded by the English. And what came out of that is like this incredible music, the dancing, all this stuff. And it's just such a weird phenomenon that out of that suffering can come some of the greatest releases through artistic expression. This is quite beautiful. And yeah, the thing I, I, I think is so crazy. If you're, if you're the aliens looking at us from above and you understand genetics and alleles and, and genes, and you're like, let me get this straight.

• 1:19:02Dax Shepard?

There's like a million genes, two of them dictate your skin color. And this whole artifice is based off of maybe the most minute bit of your genetics imaginable. Like, it's just insane how strong and permanent the thing is. And it's such an insignificant piece of hu- I don't know.

• 1:19:26Speaker 01

  Yeah, it is.

• 1:19:27Dax Shepard?

Oh, it's just a wonderful conversation. I just have so much gratitude to have her in my life, to have very in-depth and honest conversations.

• 1:19:38Speaker 01

  That's nice.

• 1:19:38Dax Shepard?

  About that stuff, yeah.

• 1:19:40Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 1:19:40Dax Shepard?

  Great fucking movie.

• 1:19:41Speaker 01

Yeah, I wanted to bring up that I think the sim is really, really on another level right now.

• 1:19:50Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:19:50Speaker 01

Or I'm really in sync with it, or something is going on. Cause I've had so many like weird sim moments lately. Um, last night, after I got back from the movie, I was thinking about.

• 1:20:04Dax Shepard?

Did the movie invite you to that?

• 1:20:06Speaker 01

  Uh, yeah.

• 1:20:06Dax Shepard?

  Oh, cool.

• 1:20:07Speaker 01

Yeah. So Pedro Pascal is also in a movie coming out soon called The Materialist, which I really, really, really want to see. Um, because it's the director of Past Lives, which is one of my favorite movies I've seen in the past decade, I think. I love that movie. Oh, my God, with Greta Lee. It's so, it's so good. It's so small, like it's a story of, um, love and loss and the complexity of all those things and relationships, like how.

• 1:20:43Speaker 01

Complicated they are. And anyway, it's a beautiful movie. And same director and I'm, so I'm really excited to see that.

• 1:20:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:53Speaker 01

And I was thinking about that and seeing it and then I was like, it reminds me, Past Lives reminds me of this other movie I saw on an airplane. And I couldn't, I was like, what is that movie? And it was like foreign, but I couldn't remember. And then I started listening to this random fashion podcast.

• 1:21:11Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:21:12Speaker 01

  That, like, minutes later.

• 1:21:14Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:21:15Speaker 01

The movie comes up. That movie.

• 1:21:18Dax Shepard?

That you were trying to think of the name of, the foreign film?

• 1:21:20Speaker 01

Yes, The Worst Person on Earth, or the.

• 1:21:23Dax Shepard?

Oh. Worst Person in the World.

• 1:21:25Speaker 01

Worst Person in the World, thank you. It's so good.

• 1:21:28Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, what's it about?

• 1:21:29Speaker 01

It's a Norwegian woman and like she falls in love, but then there's like a cheating. I mean, it's just like a comedy romance, but deeper.

• 1:21:39Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:21:40Speaker 01

And also a really beautiful story. It's an incredible movie, but I was, I couldn't remember and then they said it.

• 1:21:48Dax Shepard?

  Oh my God.

• 1:21:49Speaker 01

That in, within like 10 minutes of all the movies in the whole world, that's weird.

• 1:21:54Dax Shepard?

  Yes, that is.

• 1:21:55Speaker 01

Really weird. And then another sim, we have upcoming guest, great episode. I was editing and she's from, no, she brings up Lowell, Massachusetts.

• 1:22:09Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:22:10Speaker 01

And when I was editing it, I, you know, I get to that part Lowell, Massachusetts and my jaw dropped. Because just hours before I was on Instagram and what pops up? This clip.

• 1:22:35Speaker 01

Massachusetts. Massachusetts. I don't know, whatever.

• 1:22:42Speaker 01

  So that was in.

• 1:22:42Dax Shepard?

Is it random people or is that?

• 1:22:44Speaker 01

No, that's Jessica Simpson. That's from Newlyweds.

• 1:22:46Dax Shepard?

  Oh, my God.

• 1:22:47Speaker 01

And it was a bit like she couldn't, you remember that show like?

• 1:22:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, she said things wrong.

• 1:22:51Speaker 01

She said things wrong. She did things wrong. She couldn't do the laundry, you know, whatever.

• 1:22:55Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that was the premise.

• 1:22:56Speaker 01

  Yeah. And.

• 1:22:57Dax Shepard?

Oh, yeah. What was the tuna bit?

• 1:22:58Speaker 01

Chicken of the sea or tuna. And she didn't know if it was tuna.

• 1:23:02Dax Shepard?

If there was chicken in the sea. I was on that show.

• 1:23:04Speaker 01

  You were?

• 1:23:06Dax Shepard?

I was, because it was when I was over there shooting that video. And then somehow it was just like, I want to say went in the hot tub and maybe got drunk or something.

• 1:23:14Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:23:14Dax Shepard?

And they were shooting the show. And then I think I was just, I think.

• 1:23:17Speaker 01

Wow, that's a big deal. That was a big show.

• 1:23:20Dax Shepard?

  It was.

• 1:23:21Speaker 01

I loved it. Anyway, that popped up on my Instagram. She sang Lowell, Massachusetts.

• 1:23:28Speaker 01

Don't act like this isn't nuts.

• 1:23:31Dax Shepard?

Don't brush this off. The last thing I'll add before we do facts is if, in case you're curious why I have this crazy haircut.

• 1:23:38Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:23:39Dax Shepard?

It's because, have you seen the Brad Pitt GQ ad article?

• 1:23:45Speaker 01

  I did see it.

• 1:23:46Dax Shepard?

  You did or didn't?

• 1:23:46Speaker 01

  I did.

• 1:23:47Dax Shepard?

  And what did you think?

• 1:23:49Speaker 01

  Hot as hell.

• 1:23:50Dax Shepard?

  God damn it.

• 1:23:52Speaker 01

  Yeah, I know.

• 1:23:53Dax Shepard?

It's almost like the older he looks, the hotter he is. He's got like dirt on his face.

• 1:23:58Speaker 01

  He looks so good.

• 1:23:58Dax Shepard?

He's got a shaved head. He's got like a white.

• 1:24:01Speaker 01

Not every one of his cohorts is aging the way he is. I'll say that. Without disparaging anyone in particular.

• 1:24:08Dax Shepard?

  Fuck me.

• 1:24:09Speaker 01

  Look at him.

• 1:24:11Dax Shepard?

You know what is weird, though? This has been tripping me up. As he gets older, he does a little bit look like my dad, which is crazy. I think primarily because my dad had really full, big lips.

• 1:24:22Speaker 01

  Ah.

• 1:24:23Dax Shepard?

And just a similar face. Yeah, I just like, oh, my God, like my.

• 1:24:28Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:24:29Dax Shepard?

My dad was almost Brad Pitt.

• 1:24:31Speaker 01

  That's cool.

• 1:24:32Dax Shepard?

Just needs to go a few degrees one way or the other.

• 1:24:34Speaker 01

  Really cool.

• 1:24:36Dax Shepard?

Yeah, but him riding the motorcycle on the beach and his, he's got the goggles and his face is all dirty. Fuck.

• 1:24:42Speaker 01

  He's a stud.

• 1:24:43Dax Shepard?

He's just laying, that one shot of him laying, like, he's just taking a breather, thinking, laying down his back in a white tee.

• 1:24:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:24:51Dax Shepard?

Ah! So anyways, I saw that.

• 1:24:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:24:53Dax Shepard?

  And I lost my shit.

• 1:24:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:24:55Dax Shepard?

I can't even, I, I know you know what it does to me, but it does, it's so powerful.

• 1:25:00Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:25:00Dax Shepard?

  It gets me so, like...

• 1:25:02Speaker 01

  I love that.

• 1:25:03Dax Shepard?

Yeah, a- and so I'm like, I, I've had a shaved head. I look terrible with a shaved head.

• 1:25:08Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:25:09Dax Shepard?

But I want now a shaved head.

• 1:25:10Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:25:11Dax Shepard?

  And a gray beard.

• 1:25:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:25:13Dax Shepard?

And whatever motorcycle, it was right in the whole package.

• 1:25:15Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:25:16Dax Shepard?

I basically was like, what's the closest thing I can do to a shaved head?

• 1:25:20Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:25:21Dax Shepard?

  And I landed on this.

• 1:25:22Speaker 01

  Mohawk.

• 1:25:23Dax Shepard?

  Mohawk.

• 1:25:24Speaker 01

For the listeners, Dex has a Mohawk. It looks great. It's not a huge-

• 1:25:28Dax Shepard?

  You don't hate it?

• 1:25:29Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:25:29Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 1:25:29Speaker 01

  It's not a huge Mohawk. It's like-

• 1:25:31Dax Shepard?

  It's a conservative-

• 1:25:33Speaker 01

  It's a mini hawk.

• 1:25:34Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's like maybe two inches long.

• 1:25:36Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's nice.

• 1:25:37Dax Shepard?

And I've really tried to think about what's going on. People love superheroes, right? They love superheroes for all these many reasons.

• 1:25:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:25:45Dax Shepard?

And I really think, like, for me, he's as close to a real version of that for me.

• 1:25:51Speaker 01

  Uh-huh.

• 1:25:52Dax Shepard?

Um, he's kind of like a superhero to me. And so when I see him doing his superhero thing, I just, yeah, I, I don't know.

• 1:26:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:26:01Dax Shepard?

The titillation is like, wow, how could he have now this facet as well? It's just like, it never ends. I don't get sick of it. It's always a new look. There's always, he's in a dress at one point, you know, somewhere. I'm like, fuck, that's a rad dress.

• 1:26:16Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:26:18Dax Shepard?

I just think like the endless, like, he remains novel at all times, and he is aging. So it's like, the, the, the, the story keeps on evolving.

• 1:26:27Speaker 01

  Yeah, he's great.

• 1:26:28Dax Shepard?

I do think, though, I try to think about, like, as much as I would love to look like him and stuff, I also imagine it's a burden.

• 1:26:38Speaker 01

  For sure.

• 1:26:39Dax Shepard?

It has to be a major burden. Like, I don't know how the outside thing wouldn't infect the internal identity.

• 1:26:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:26:46Dax Shepard?

You just have to truly be a superhero at that point for that not to just, that to not be like some kind of-

• 1:26:52Speaker 01

  Well, even superheroes have kryptonite.

• 1:26:54Dax Shepard?

  Well, one does, yeah.

• 1:26:55Speaker 01

They all have, they all have a thing, they all have a fatal flaw.

• 1:26:59Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, they do. Anywho, okay.

• 1:27:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:27:02Dax Shepard?

  That's my hairdo.

• 1:27:03Speaker 01

  It's your hairdo.

• 1:27:04Dax Shepard?

  That's my hairdo.

• 1:27:04Speaker 01

  It's nice. Summer do.

• 1:27:06Dax Shepard?

It's been a pleasure having you.

• 1:27:07Speaker 01

  Groot, thanks for coming.

• 1:27:09Dax Shepard?

Yeah, do you want to stick around for facts, Groot? Yeah, oh my god, his smile just got bigger. It really did.

• 1:27:17Speaker 01

If you guys aren't watching this fact check, you just must.

• 1:27:20Dax Shepard?

If your heart can handle it.

• 1:27:22Speaker 01

  If it can handle it.

• 1:27:24Dax Shepard?

  Warning.

• 1:27:26Speaker 01

  All right, love you.

• 1:27:27Dax Shepard?

  Love you.

• 1:27:30Speaker 03

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert, if you dare.

• 1:27:42Speaker 01

  Okay, some facts.

• 1:27:43Dax Shepard?

  I've really invited myself.

• 1:27:46Speaker 01

  That's great.

• 1:27:46Dax Shepard?

Maybe the most I've ever done.

• 1:27:48Speaker 01

Is just get in the car?

• 1:27:50Dax Shepard?

I was like, I'd love to come to this with you. The screening of this movie that's just for cast members that I'll be at.

• 1:27:56Speaker 03

He did invite, he did invite you, though, in here.

• 1:27:58Speaker 01

No, it was, I was, he was like, you guys want to come?

• 1:28:02Dax Shepard?

As a like, no one would want to come.

• 1:28:04Speaker 01

  As a joke.

• 1:28:05Dax Shepard?

Yeah, this is clearly a joke. Don't say yes. I'm not really inviting you. Would you like to come?

• 1:28:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:28:10Dax Shepard?

And I said, absolutely. I'd love to come.

• 1:28:12Speaker 01

  You, man.

• 1:28:15Dax Shepard?

And then right before the movie starts, like, the directors all stand up. There's three of them, and they're gonna tell everyone what they're about to see.

• 1:28:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:28:22Dax Shepard?

And I go, I just, just really quick, if I was cut out, I would like to know before the movie, then find out after.

• 1:28:29Speaker 01

  Do people laugh?

• 1:28:30Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it worked. But it was a big swing.

• 1:28:31Speaker 01

That's a swing, because like, they could be like-

• 1:28:33Dax Shepard?

I had to call out that I had no business being at this.

• 1:28:35Speaker 01

I know, but maybe people would think, oh, yeah, was he supposed to be in it? Because he's not. This is horrible.

• 1:28:40Dax Shepard?

I had a little bit of a fear that they would be like, oh, my god. I didn't, A, I didn't even know he was in it. They didn't even announce it, that he was in it. And fuck, he didn't make the cut, and he's here to wa- yeah. I really was nervous. Some people would think that.

• 1:28:53Speaker 01

I admire you. You take a lot of swings that most people wouldn't. And look, most of them work out.

• 1:29:00Dax Shepard?

I mean, at least above 50%. Enough to encourage me to keep doing it.

• 1:29:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:05Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:29:05Dax Shepard?

My family relishes when I miss. And I get it. I get it. It must be so fun when I come up short. Cause they know I'm taking all these swings.

• 1:29:15Speaker 01

Yeah, that's how I feel. But then it feels bad. It's like schadenfreude. I actually don't like that feeling.

• 1:29:21Dax Shepard?

You don't want me to fail, but it's also funny to watch.

• 1:29:24Speaker 01

It's like, look, I, well, it feels more like.

• 1:29:27Dax Shepard?

  The bill's gonna come due.

• 1:29:28Speaker 01

Exactly. Like, just like, that's the way life is.

• 1:29:31Dax Shepard?

You can't just get out of this. Yeah. Justice has been served in a way.

• 1:29:36Speaker 01

  Justice, my favorite thing.

• 1:29:37Dax Shepard?

Yeah. But that one worked. That one worked.

• 1:29:40Speaker 01

Good. Fun. Great. I mean, ding, ding, ding. You took a big swing at Stanley Tucci's house by reading the book, which I brought up on this episode.

• 1:29:49Dax Shepard?

And I didn't even really remember that part.

• 1:29:50Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:29:51Dax Shepard?

Well, I was doing an Italian accent. Yeah. My mama. My papa.

• 1:29:57Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:29:59Speaker 01

  Anyway.

• 1:30:01Speaker 01

  All right, Sam. Well, Sam's.

• 1:30:03Dax Shepard?

  Sam Sam.

• 1:30:04Speaker 01

  Sam is Sam I am.

• 1:30:05Dax Shepard?

  Yeah. He's the king.

• 1:30:07Speaker 01

We talked about for a second, transference in therapy. Transference refers to a patient's unconscious redirection of feelings and desires about past significant figures in their life onto their therapist. So this means the client may unconsciously project their emotions and expectations from previous relationships onto the therapist. For example, a client might experience love, anger, or dependence towards a therapist, similar to how they felt towards a parent or other important figures in their past. So.

• 1:30:39Dax Shepard?

Do you have this? Do you experience this?

• 1:30:41Speaker 01

I don't think so, but I. I do think I did it recently. And I, I knew it. I was like, oh my God, I'm doing this thing to her. I mean, it was a complicated scenario, which I've told you, I've now told you about separately or on an upcoming episode, people will hear about it. There was a complicated scenario happening and I was having a feeling about her that I have about other people.

• 1:31:07Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:07Speaker 01

And I knew, then I was like, oh, I'm just doing this to her. But then what was interesting is then when her and I talked about it, she was like, yeah, I shouldn't have done, like, I didn't say you shouldn't have done that. I was like, oh, okay. So this has been going on and I'm realizing this. And she was like, I should not have done that. So that, it was interesting. Yeah. Anyway, I just love my therapist so much. So much. And when I was watching the new season of Couples Therapy, I was like, she really has Orna vibes.

• 1:31:40Dax Shepard?

Oh, wow. That's a huge compliment.

• 1:31:42Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:31:43Dax Shepard?

I know. I used to tell my therapist about how great Orna was. How could that be fun to hear?

• 1:31:47Speaker 01

No one wants to hear that.

• 1:31:48Dax Shepard?

Or Phil Stutz, when we were obsessed with Phil, I would share with

• 1:31:51Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:31:51Dax Shepard?

my therapist how much I like Phil Stutz.

• 1:31:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:31:54Dax Shepard?

But I had to be honest.

• 1:31:56Speaker 01

That's the point. Oh, yes. Yes, you do. You do in therapy. Yeah.

• 1:32:00Dax Shepard?

Yeah. But if someone's just going on and on with you about how much they love a certain podcast that's not yours, you know, they might at some point like rein it in.

• 1:32:09Speaker 01

Yeah. It's like have some awareness.

• 1:32:11Dax Shepard?

  Yeah. Yeah. Some social awareness.

• 1:32:14Speaker 01

  Okay. Now.

• 1:32:15Dax Shepard?

I don't, if I've done it, I've not been conscious of it.

• 1:32:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:32:19Dax Shepard?

  I don't think I have. Like, I don't think that's something I've like role played or.

• 1:32:23Speaker 01

  Yeah. It's all subconscious.

• 1:32:25Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:25Speaker 01

  It's not like.

• 1:32:26Dax Shepard?

Well, I think sometimes it's explicit, right? Like have a conversation with me. What would you say to your dad? So you're almost like inviting.

• 1:32:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:32:35Dax Shepard?

Yourself to take on dad role.

• 1:32:37Speaker 01

This is like. The pattern you get in that's negative that you're there to figure out you that person, the therapist becomes that person.

• 1:32:46Dax Shepard?

Yeah, they need to fill that role.

• 1:32:48Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's pretty.

• 1:32:50Dax Shepard?

  We're embarrassing, right?

• 1:32:52Speaker 01

But we're trying to be better. That's the point of it.

• 1:32:55Dax Shepard?

  That's the endearing part.

• 1:32:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:32:57Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:59Speaker 01

Okay, so I looked up the Tanzania safari animals versus the Kruger ones.

• 1:33:07Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 1:33:08Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:33:08Dax Shepard?

  What are you finding?

• 1:33:09Speaker 01

Tanzania, I'm seeing wild beast, giraffe, hippopotamus, cheetah, zebra, leopard, lion, flamingos, American, I mean, African.

• 1:33:20Dax Shepard?

  American bald eagle.

• 1:33:23Speaker 01

African buffalo. Oh, boy, there's really a lot of them, so I'm not going to keep going.

• 1:33:29Speaker 01

  Now, as far as Kruger.

• 1:33:32Dax Shepard?

What is cute is you said wild beasts. That's.

• 1:33:35Speaker 01

  Wilderbeast?

• 1:33:37Dax Shepard?

Yeah, this is someone will say in the comments, I want to save them.

• 1:33:41Dax Shepard?

Wild. Here's what they've got in Tanzania, wild beast.

• 1:33:45Speaker 01

  I mean, that's cool. Wilderbeast.

• 1:33:49Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:51Speaker 01

  Oops.

• 1:33:53Dax Shepard?

The density, I don't want to shit on anyone else's African safari, but just as a fact, the density of animals on the Skremeti Reserve is astronomically higher than almost everywhere else, other than Botswana.

• 1:34:08Speaker 01

  That's cool.

• 1:34:09Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:09Speaker 01

Okay, now in Kruger, there Kruger National Park.

• 1:34:13Dax Shepard?

  Famous.

• 1:34:14Speaker 01

  Leopard, African buffalo, again.

• 1:34:17Dax Shepard?

  Wild beast.

• 1:34:18Speaker 01

Wilderbeast. Cheetah, African wild dog, common warthog. Now, I'm like really nervous I'm going to read something wrong. Impala, vervet monkey, blue wildebeest. Yeah, some others.

• 1:34:37Speaker 01

  I'm not seeing like lion.

• 1:34:40Dax Shepard?

They have them there in Kruger. I think that's where famously one of those lions got into the bus window.

• 1:34:46Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:34:47Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:48Speaker 01

  That's.

• 1:34:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:50Speaker 01

That makes me really not gonna go.

• 1:34:53Dax Shepard?

Do you have interest in going on safari? Or it's not huge for you?

• 1:34:57Speaker 01

It's not on the top of my list.

• 1:34:59Dax Shepard?

You're not like an animal person?

• 1:35:01Speaker 01

  Brand new information.

• 1:35:04Speaker 01

It might be, remember, I'm the one that told you that. Seahorse. I didn't know what a seahorse was because Indians.

• 1:35:12Dax Shepard?

  Your dad didn't know.

• 1:35:13Speaker 01

Don't know that much about animals.

• 1:35:16Dax Shepard?

They don't fuck with seahorses, I think.

• 1:35:19Speaker 01

Yeah, they mainly have, um, Bengal tigers.

• 1:35:23Dax Shepard?

  Tigers and elephants.

• 1:35:25Speaker 01

Exactly. They fuck with elephants only.

• 1:35:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:28Speaker 01

Okay, so I was Googling, do koalas have chlamydia? If you just type in, do koalas, it auto fills.

• 1:35:35Dax Shepard?

John Oliver famously, do you remember this? He had, um, he had a long running bit and it had to do with somehow, um, Russell Crowe. It involved Russell Crowe.

• 1:35:47Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:35:48Dax Shepard?

And so Russell Crowe, to get back at him, bought a plaque for him at the Chlamydia Award for the.

• 1:35:56Speaker 01

Oh, I do vaguely remember this.

• 1:35:59Dax Shepard?

John Oliver Koala Chlamydia Lab, you know, like it was a nominal.

• 1:36:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:36:04Dax Shepard?

Donation required to have his name permanently associated with Koala Chlamydia. Koala Chlamydia.

• 1:36:10Speaker 01

Oh, yeah. It is a significant threat to the koala populations in Australia, causing blindness, infertility, and even death. Experts estimate that between 20% and 90% of koalas are infected with, also that's.

• 1:36:25Dax Shepard?

  It's a huge delta there.

• 1:36:26Speaker 01

  Yes, I don't love that.

• 1:36:28Dax Shepard?

That's like saying somewhere between none and all.

• 1:36:31Speaker 01

Yeah, but it's probably because, because there's such stigma, the koalas aren't self-reporting.

• 1:36:37Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, probably.

• 1:36:37Speaker 01

It's hard to get them to self-report. Um, okay.

• 1:36:42Dax Shepard?

Between 20 and 90%, that is literally like saying it's between none and all.

• 1:36:46Speaker 01

I think they mean in certain location, like certain populations of them.

• 1:36:50Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:36:50Speaker 01

Like some areas they have, most have it.

• 1:36:53Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I want to be in the group with 90%.

• 1:36:55Speaker 01

  Why?

• 1:36:56Dax Shepard?

That means they were fucking a lot.

• 1:36:58Speaker 01

  But you might die.

• 1:36:58Dax Shepard?

Evidence of party, being a party animal.

• 1:37:01Speaker 01

  Koalas are party animals.

• 1:37:03Dax Shepard?

They are, as we now found out.

• 1:37:05Speaker 01

  Oh, I guess like.

• 1:37:07Dax Shepard?

  They're bed hopping.

• 1:37:08Speaker 01

  I guess I'm not a koala. It's okay.

• 1:37:10Dax Shepard?

  You're a chinchilla.

• 1:37:13Speaker 01

We should look up the chlamydia rate of chinchillas.

• 1:37:15Dax Shepard?

I bet it's low. They're mostly in cages.

• 1:37:17Speaker 01

Cause no one wants to have sex with them.

• 1:37:19Dax Shepard?

No, cause they're, they've taken themselves out of the population.

• 1:37:22Speaker 01

  And they, they're like goo.

• 1:37:24Dax Shepard?

They don't have ribs, I think, or maybe they do. They have floating ribs.

• 1:37:27Speaker 01

That's why I am definitely not a chinchilla. I have pretty prominent ribs.

• 1:37:31Dax Shepard?

Pronounced ribs, strong ribs to house those eggs.

• 1:37:35Speaker 01

Okay, um, was Nixon elected November 5th, 1968? Yeah. His birthday.

• 1:37:43Dax Shepard?

  Good job.

• 1:37:44Speaker 01

Sam's birthday, really cool. I thought that this episode, like, if you're in acting school or in theater programs, like I was, I just thought like, oh, if I was in my high school theater right now, or in my college theater, I would love to listen to this because he talked about Meisner, he talked about, some direction from Philip Seymour Hoffman in a play that was very interesting. And he mentioned Eric Bogosian, like very, very quickly, and he's a huge playwright. Like when he, he mentioned him as he was in a scene with him. And I was like, oh, the guy who wrote Suburbia, like he's a very big playwright. And I would have been very excited if I was really in that moment.

• 1:38:28Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:29Speaker 01

I thought, oh, you wouldn't get it if you weren't a theater head.

• 1:38:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I didn't get that.

• 1:38:34Speaker 01

Yeah. So if you know anyone in a theater program, send this episode their way.

• 1:38:39Dax Shepard?

You know, it's really funny is like, in general, as people who listen to the show would know, I don't, I'm not generally interested in how someone acts.

• 1:38:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:38:48Dax Shepard?

There's just a handful of people and it's really dictated by, do I think they're doing something? That's absolutely extraordinary within the discipline. And I think he's one of the very few people I am, wanna know how they do what they do. Or if they even know.

• 1:39:02Speaker 01

I agree. Uh, yeah, it would be like if we had Christian Bale on, we're asking him about acting.

• 1:39:07Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I wanna know how he breaks this down and gets to where he gets.

• 1:39:10Speaker 01

Yeah. Speaking of both of them, I was trying to find the clip of, I bet you did, you rascal.

• 1:39:16Dax Shepard?

  Hard to find.

• 1:39:16Speaker 01

  Which was in, um, Vice.

• 1:39:18Dax Shepard?

  Best line of the movie.

• 1:39:19Speaker 01

Best line, Sam plays Bush and Christian Bale plays Cheney, and I couldn't find it.

• 1:39:26Dax Shepard?

  Ah, bummer.

• 1:39:26Speaker 01

No, it's a great line, but also I was watching it.

• 1:39:29Dax Shepard?

This could be one of these lines where it's not even in the movie.

• 1:39:31Speaker 01

  No, it is.

• 1:39:32Dax Shepard?

You know how like you've just been saying it so long, you find out, oh my God, it's not even what he said.

• 1:39:36Speaker 01

Or it's a different movie or something. Anyway, they are both, I was just watching like a three minute clip. Cause I thought that's where it was and um. They're both so. Good and so undetectable. The real person. It's wild.

• 1:39:56Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:58Speaker 01

Some people are just born to do certain things.

• 1:40:01Dax Shepard?

He in particular, his gift is being a chameleon.

• 1:40:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:40:05Dax Shepard?

I remember watching Vice and like. I thought about it for the first nine seconds he was on screen and then I never thought about it again. And it really was just Cheney.

• 1:40:17Speaker 01

  He's, yeah.

• 1:40:19Dax Shepard?

Yeah, he can really do that.

• 1:40:20Speaker 01

Like, what if he had never found acting?

• 1:40:22Dax Shepard?

  He'd be a drug addict.

• 1:40:24Speaker 01

We'll ask next time we ever get him on. Um, okay, Meisner, just really quick. We didn't get too deep in this, but I do think it's worth, there's all these activities and all these rules and all these things. We did a lot of Meisner in school. And I was keeping it to myself, obviously.

• 1:40:43Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you don't want to brag, make me feel insecure for my lack of training.

• 1:40:46Speaker 01

Yeah. But the main thing you think of when you think of Meisner is this repetition exercise. Which is like two people are in a room and. I observe something, you're wearing a white shirt. Then you'll say, I'm wearing a white shirt. I say, you're wearing a white shirt. I'm wearing a white shirt. And you keep going back and forth until you notice something like naturally changes and you say that and then it's, and you keep going back and forth.

• 1:41:16Dax Shepard?

But you're obligated to not steer it in any direction?

• 1:41:19Speaker 01

  Exactly. It's really hard.

• 1:41:22Dax Shepard?

Yeah. I want to do that. I mean, I don't want to make everyone else sit through, but I want to do it.

• 1:41:26Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:41:27Dax Shepard?

Yeah. You're wearing a black shirt.

• 1:41:30Speaker 01

  I don't want to.

• 1:41:31Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:41:32Speaker 01

Okay, the original Gong Show. That was on NBC from 1976 to 1980. Four years.

• 1:41:40Dax Shepard?

Again, four years. All these things I thought were on for 12 years. I thought Dukes of Hazzard was on for like 10 seasons.

• 1:41:46Speaker 01

I know, that's me with full house.

• 1:41:48Dax Shepard?

  Average hits, yeah.

• 1:41:50Speaker 01

I know. Eric H. Nashley. Oh, it was on for eight seasons. Never mind. Oh, wait, no, they might be counting. Later ones.

• 1:41:59Dax Shepard?

No, I think that one was on.

• 1:42:00Speaker 01

  Was it?

• 1:42:01Dax Shepard?

That one really ran, didn't it?

• 1:42:03Speaker 01

I mean, I thought, but then, oh my God, speaking of cool stuff. Um, success.

• 1:42:11Dax Shepard?

Full house. We were talking about full house and that's cool stuff.

• 1:42:14Speaker 01

  To me.

• 1:42:14Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, cool stuff.

• 1:42:15Speaker 01

Actually, no. Speaking of successful things, speaking of Mary Kate and Ashley, The Row.

• 1:42:20Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:42:20Speaker 01

  Estimated billion dollar company.

• 1:42:23Dax Shepard?

  Um, valued it.

• 1:42:24Speaker 01

  Valued at a billion dollars.

• 1:42:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:42:26Speaker 01

I just read today that Hailey Bieber's makeup company, Rode, which is very good. I like a lot of their products. Um, was bought for a billion dollars today.

• 1:42:36Dax Shepard?

I was just somewhere she was at and I didn't talk to her. And now I wish I did so I could ask her about her company.

• 1:42:42Speaker 01

I'm kind of obsessed with her.

• 1:42:43Dax Shepard?

  You are?

• 1:42:44Speaker 01

She's, um, really a powerhouse business person who's been like, you know, looked at as Justin Bieber's wife, who, and not only that, like stole him from Selena Gomez, like pegged in this.

• 1:43:01Dax Shepard?

  The story?

• 1:43:01Speaker 01

Yes, that's the story. So she's been villainized a ton.

• 1:43:04Dax Shepard?

  Were they together?

• 1:43:05Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 1:43:06Dax Shepard?

They were. Okay. And she's also someone's daughter.

• 1:43:10Speaker 01

  Yeah, she's.

• 1:43:10Dax Shepard?

  Steven Baldwin's?

• 1:43:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:43:12Dax Shepard?

Yeah. So she has a lot of, um, people that could overshadow her and she's like, no.

• 1:43:18Speaker 01

  I think it's awesome.

• 1:43:19Dax Shepard?

I'm gonna get a billion dollars.

• 1:43:21Speaker 01

  She did it.

• 1:43:22Dax Shepard?

  Me for money.

• 1:43:23Speaker 01

Yeah. And we will ask her for some.

• 1:43:25Dax Shepard?

We will ask her for some.

• 1:43:26Speaker 01

Yeah. Um, anyway, I just think it's cool when women make a billion dollars.

• 1:43:31Dax Shepard?

  Me too. I love it.

• 1:43:32Speaker 01

I just love it. All right. Well, oh, oh, oh, one thing that I wrote down when he talked about Philip Seymour Hoffman. And he said, you know, he was always the sober guy.

• 1:43:45Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:45Speaker 01

Like, that was like who he was to them.

• 1:43:48Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:48Speaker 01

So it really caught them off guard and that made me feel really sad.

• 1:43:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:55Speaker 01

And I understood it. It's like, sometimes that becomes your identity. So much so that, I don't know.

• 1:44:02Dax Shepard?

  It is all interesting.

• 1:44:05Dax Shepard?

He's, he's very legendary in the AA world, Philip.

• 1:44:10Speaker 01

  In what way?

• 1:44:11Dax Shepard?

He just was like, people would hear him speak and he could speak in a way that was very.

• 1:44:16Speaker 01

  Eloquent?

• 1:44:17Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and like, whatever his skills were as a humanist to be an actor, I think also was him sharing. I just have ran into lots of people who had seen him share over the years.

• 1:44:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:44:28Dax Shepard?

Like, he's such a special dude and.

• 1:44:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:44:30Dax Shepard?

So, yeah, that was one of the bigger, uh, ones that shook the community.

• 1:44:36Speaker 01

Yeah. Oh, it's so sad. It really.

• 1:44:42Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:43Speaker 01

Like, it's one thing when, this sounds, it's all horrible. It's always so sad. But when you know someone is struggling.

• 1:44:53Dax Shepard?

That they had it licked at one point. Is that what you mean?

• 1:44:56Speaker 01

Well, I mean, when you know, when you know someone's like a constantly back and forth and it's like a constant struggle, when some, when it ultimately gets them, it's so sad, but you're not like.

• 1:45:09Dax Shepard?

  You're not shocked.

• 1:45:10Speaker 01

Well, fuck, this doesn't work, you know? But when it's someone like this, where, where he's the sober guy, he's done it.

• 1:45:17Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:18Speaker 01

And then it still gets him.

• 1:45:20Dax Shepard?

  Number two, like.

• 1:45:21Speaker 01

Exactly. It makes me really scared.

• 1:45:24Dax Shepard?

Yeah, scared is all right. Yeah.

• 1:45:26Speaker 01

  Sad and scared.

• 1:45:28Dax Shepard?

  Sad and scared.

• 1:45:30Speaker 01

  Can't you just be careful?

• 1:45:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Well, I'll, I'll try not to shoot dope, you know?

• 1:45:37Speaker 01

  Well, any of it.

• 1:45:38Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah. But there is, there is a sliding scale of lethality for sure.

• 1:45:43Speaker 01

Yeah, but that scale gets away from everyone fast.

• 1:45:49Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. Love you. Love Sam Rockwell.
