• 1:57Bill Simmons?

All right, I'm not sure if this is the first rewatchables mailbag. Have we ever done this before?

• 2:00Chris Ryan?

  We did a categories mailbag.

• 2:02Bill Simmons?

  Oh, that's right, we did.

• 2:03Chris Ryan?

  Where we refreshed them.

• 2:04Speaker 03

We came up with, our listeners sent in Cruz versus Hanks. That's where we got that.

• 2:08Bill Simmons?

Was that before or after I got the vaccine?

• 2:12Bill Simmons?

Because I don't remember anything after the vaccine.

• 2:14Chris Ryan?

Is this fire bill? It's no longer called back, yeah?

• 2:17Bill Simmons?

  Fuck it.

• 2:19Bill Simmons?

We have no idea how long this is gonna be. It could be one part, it could be two parts. That's producer Craig right there, Craig Horlbeck. CR, Chris Ryan. We've been doing the rewatchables. We had like, was the eight, nine? Nine year anniversary.

• 2:33Chris Ryan?

  Is that right?

• 2:33Bill Simmons?

Of when we did the Heat.

• 2:36Bill Simmons?

Twenty years of Heat. Which, by the way, in 2025, thirty years of Heat.

• 2:41Chris Ryan?

I was at the Lakers Spurs the other night, and a guy shouted out from the crowd, "For Heat!" And that was it.

• 2:48Bill Simmons?

That was, that's all he brought to the table?

• 2:49Chris Ryan?

  And that was Victor Wembanyama.

• 2:53Bill Simmons?

Wemby loves it. "For Heat!", and he's like, "Neeel!"

• 2:58Chris Ryan?

I sent you that thing where the backup keeper for Liverpool is a big rewatchables fan.

• 3:03Bill Simmons?

  Really?

• 3:03Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 3:04Bill Simmons?

How do we get him the starting job?

• 3:07Chris Ryan?

We have to, well, I don't want him to get the starting job yet. We have a best keeper in the world. He's really good, but Allison is the best.

• 3:13Bill Simmons?

Well, Craig's been our producer since, for how many years?

• 3:16Speaker 03

  Since 2018?

• 3:17Bill Simmons?

Yeah, 2018. We had Zach Mack initially, then Craig moved in. And we've woven him into the podcast. He's hosted a couple. We decided he had to be involved in the mailbag. I have a lot of mailbag questions. Thanks to everybody who mailed them into the [email protected]. I'm gonna go through these.

• 3:34Speaker 03

Is it mostly new category suggestions or just broad questions? What is it?

• 3:38Bill Simmons?

  It's all kinds of things.

• 3:39Chris Ryan?

  Yeah. Some constructive feedback.

• 3:41Bill Simmons?

So, I think I, I think I organized this correctly. We're gonna go through them. I'll try to stop after each question. First one, a new category idea from Matthew B. "The Chris Ryan Award. Would this movie be better if a main character smoked?"

• 3:55Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 3:57Bill Simmons?

It's a good idea. So I've been thinking a lot, big picture about the categories because we had, we had a bunch from the last thing too. And maybe the move is going forward where it's like, let's say you and I are hosting.

• 4:08Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 4:09Bill Simmons?

I have a spot. Maybe we get rid of like Big Kahuna Burger or something like that. And I have a spot where it's like, you can take any of the extra categories you want. Right?

• 4:18Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 4:18Bill Simmons?

  So if it's like-

• 4:19Chris Ryan?

  A flex position.

• 4:20Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, it's a flex.

• 4:20Chris Ryan?

  I like that.

• 4:21Bill Simmons?

Flex spot. Maybe there's two flex spots in the pod and then we have like 20 possibles. And obviously what stage the best, Dion Waiters, all those stay in, but then when we talk about like-

• 4:31Chris Ryan?

How many of these categories are related to smoking of the flex?

• 4:34Bill Simmons?

  Well-

• 4:35Chris Ryan?

That's tough because the answer's always yes for that category.

• 4:37Bill Simmons?

Well, Matthew B. had it. Dan White suggested the Sean Penn, I brought my own pack award for excellence in on-screen smoking. Which I like. Is Sean Penn the right person for that? Or would you go Jimmy Conway?

• 4:50Chris Ryan?

Uh, I think I would bring Sean Penn because Sean Penn also insists on smoking in every on-screen interview he does where he's like, I think that's part of the barrier to entry is like, you gotta let Penn smoke American Spirits on camera.

• 5:03Bill Simmons?

Well, I remember when he came to the, our old studio to do the BS pod with me. And it was like a Sunday, 1 o'clock and he stunk a cigarette sand. And I was like, I really admire this guy.

• 5:14Bill Simmons?

This guy's on brand at all times. So you would, you're okay with the Sean Penn, I brought my own pack award?

• 5:19Chris Ryan?

I like in general, just like knowing what actors did for real in the movie. I think that's a fun.

• 5:24Bill Simmons?

I gotta, as you know, this is an obsession of ours and especially mine. I always, I always look for it. And when I watch the, usually it's actors smoking. I always wonder like, are they smoking the fake ones?

• 5:36Chris Ryan?

I was wondering if Billy Bob's smoking real cigarettes.

• 5:39Bill Simmons?

In Landman. I was thinking about that in the season finale.

• 5:42Chris Ryan?

Yeah. Cause I, I want, I feel like he's just like, you guys need another shot? You guys need another angle? Cause I'll spark up again.

• 5:51Bill Simmons?

Cause they had, do you watch Landman?

• 5:52Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 5:53Bill Simmons?

They had a gasoline scene in the season finale. I won't spoil it, but he's covered in gasoline. And then somebody offers him the cigarette.

• 6:00Chris Ryan?

  He's covered in gasoline?

• 6:00Bill Simmons?

Yeah, he's still covered in gasoline.

• 6:01Chris Ryan?

Be really careful where you ask.

• 6:03Bill Simmons?

Be careful. It's like, uh, I'm already whatever. And he just starts smoking. So then Dan White also suggests conversely, you have the Sean Penn, I brought my own pack award. The Tom Cruise, which end do I light award for terrible on-screen smoking.

• 6:18Bill Simmons?

I like both of those, so I think maybe, maybe we just keep it in mind. That's what I really want to do with the pod going forward. It's like conditional categories depending on where we are. Cause a lot of times we just put that on what's aged the best, what's aged the worst. But maybe smoking needs a bigger platform.

• 6:33Chris Ryan?

Yeah, let's put more attention on smoking. Let's promote it.

• 6:36Speaker 03

  Especially right now.

• 6:40Bill Simmons?

Who is our, who's our Mount Rushmore for cigarette smokers?

• 6:43Chris Ryan?

For just actually good ones or the Tom Cruise ones?

• 6:46Bill Simmons?

  Jimmy Conway is Jordan.

• 6:47Chris Ryan?

Sean Penn, Jimmy Conway, I think, cause.

• 6:51Speaker 03

So this is most believable smokers.

• 6:53Bill Simmons?

Yeah, cause De Niro did this thing, he'd, he'd flip it. Just it was these two fingers, but the way he did it.

• 7:00Speaker 03

Do you respect it less if they were real smokers in real life?

• 7:04Chris Ryan?

No, I respect it more if you were able to act that well. But I, I feel like the assumption is, is that all actors are either recently quit, still secretly, or smokers.

• 7:14Bill Simmons?

I think when you act, you're just in a trailer and somebody's like, you want to have a cigarette?

• 7:18Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, crusty skinny.

• 7:19Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I'd love to have a trailer. They all stink of cigarettes. Edie Falco in Copland, which I was thinking that maybe is an award too. The Edie Falco in Copland Award for this character somehow became three times hotter because she smoked. Blake Lively in The Town.

• 7:35Speaker 03

We need to start adding visuals to these categories too on YouTube. Like whenever time we introduce that category, we got to show Edie.

• 7:40Bill Simmons?

Right, yeah. Well, Sean sent us, what was that Twitter account, the smoking account?

• 7:45Chris Ryan?

  It was, uh.

• 7:46Bill Simmons?

It was this, this. Twitter account where they measure how many cigarettes were smoked during the movie. And that's the entire Twitter account.

• 7:53Speaker 03

That's fun. It's like how many F words, but how many cigarettes?

• 7:56Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 7:56Speaker 03

  That's good.

• 7:56Bill Simmons?

So this guy went through and this was just his thing. I think cigarette smoking in movies.

• 8:00Chris Ryan?

How many cigarettes? It's at cigarette movies on X.

• 8:04Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, there you go.

• 8:05Speaker 03

  That's you.

• 8:06Chris Ryan?

  That's actually my one.

• 8:07Bill Simmons?

Alright, so we're gonna step up the smoking stuff in 2025.

• 8:10Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 8:11Bill Simmons?

Good start. This is from Cindy Hollenbeck. Bill, you are my spirit animal, which my kids say is no longer politically correct. Ha, ha, ha. I love the Bad News Bears slapshot Animal House.

• 8:24Speaker 03

Cindy Hollenbeck is my mother, by the way.

• 8:26Bill Simmons?

This is great. She loves Bad News Bears slapshot Animal House Caddyshack Fast Times. Find myself nodding along in your perspectives. I enjoy everyone's knowledge, senses of humor, dirty jokes and analysis. Okay, category recommendation. In line with Cruz versus Hanks. Can you find two female actresses? Or she said two female actors, which I probably should have said.

• 8:48Speaker 03

That's why you're not the spirit animal.

• 8:50Bill Simmons?

Can you, can you find two female actors as well? I'm thinking of Sandra Bullock versus Nicole Kidman, or Michelle Pfeiffer versus Ellen Barkin, Meg Ryan versus Goldie Hawn. You see where I'm going. All right, so I put real thought on this. I like this idea.

• 9:02Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 9:03Bill Simmons?

I like this Fallen Cruise Hanks. But I also think Cruise and Hanks are one on one as a combo. We don't have the actress version of that.

• 9:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 9:12Bill Simmons?

But what I do think we have, I think you could do Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Michelle Pfeiffer, Nicole Kidman, and make it a foursome. And we could keep track of that as well, because I think those are, like Julia Roberts versus Bullock is fun. Pfeiffer, we always talk about anyway. Kidman's got a little more drama.

• 9:30Speaker 03

Pfeiffer appeared in a lot of casting what ifs.

• 9:32Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 9:32Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 9:32Bill Simmons?

So I think if, if those were the fours, are there anybody else you would put in there? Julia, Sandra Bullock, Pfeiffer, Kidman. Because Demi Moore, probably a little too limited.

• 9:41Speaker 03

There's gotta be somebody more recent, right?

• 9:43Bill Simmons?

Well, I was thinking, so somebody like under 40? Like Emma Stone?

• 9:47Speaker 03

Emma Stone or Jennifer Lawrence or something?

• 9:49Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Oh, Jennifer Lawrence. So maybe Jennifer Lawrence replaces Julia. Julia's fine.

• 9:55Speaker 03

They almost have to be the same age, though. It's gonna be hard to do Jennifer Lawrence.

• 9:58Bill Simmons?

Because you're basically looking at these movies and you're like, Billy Crystal's girlfriend in Running Scared would gotta have been better if it was Goldie Hawn. Yes. Yeah, so, so.

• 10:08Speaker 03

I almost think we just need, it needs to be two people. Cruise versus Hanks is iconic, because it's two. It's gotta be.

• 10:13Bill Simmons?

So is it modern people or old people?

• 10:15Speaker 03

It's, it's whoever makes the most sense. Cruise and Hanks are perfect equals and they, they're opposites in a great way.

• 10:21Bill Simmons?

Cruise and Hanks works for Superbad and it works for like,

• 10:23Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 10:24Bill Simmons?

It works for like Howard's End. I don't, I can't figure out who it is then. Because you could go more modern, you could go J. Law versus Emma Stone.

• 10:32Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 10:34Bill Simmons?

But I don't know if that's Cruise or Hanks worthy. I mean, Cruise has been in 15 rewatchables already.

• 10:39Speaker 03

  There's a, there's a.

• 10:40Bill Simmons?

  Julia Roberts versus Sandra Bullock?

• 10:42Speaker 03

There's also a humor to Cruise versus Hanks that I just don't know if it's there for Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock.

• 10:46Bill Simmons?

It wouldn't be funny to be, would you rather have Sandra Bullock or Julia Roberts in Den of Thieves?

• 10:50Speaker 03

Yeah, it's like, ah, you know.

• 10:52Bill Simmons?

All right, well, we'll keep workshopping that one. There's no right answer yet.

• 10:55Speaker 03

  There's something there.

• 10:57Bill Simmons?

I like the idea of Michelle Pfeiffer just being involved, because as you know, I love her. All right, new category idea from Will Hanselman. As a long suffering Lions fan, Dan Campbell is my hero and number one anxiety inducer. I suggest a category called the Dan Campbell scale, given to a character or scene that makes you think, holy shit, are they really going for this? As it's actually happening. For instance, the Illuminati orgy in Eyes Wide Shut is a 100% Dan Campbell. Gerard Butler's Big Nick eating the ground, eating the donut off the ground, 75% Dan Campbell, etc. And then he says, best wishes, thanks for all your support.

• 11:35Speaker 03

That's how I felt when they started singing in Amelia Perez. I was like, wow, fourth and 18, we're going for it.

• 11:40Chris Ryan?

Wow, they pulled golf and they're going Wildcat, fourth and 18.

• 11:45Bill Simmons?

What is the all time holy shit, they're really going for this? I really like the idea of the eating the donut off the ground, it's a perfect Dan Campbell.

• 11:52Speaker 03

Maybe there should be a fourth and a certain amount of yardage scale?

• 11:55Bill Simmons?

  For the Dan Campbell scale?

• 11:57Speaker 03

Yes, it's like, was this a fourth and two or was it a fourth and 12?

• 12:00Chris Ryan?

Yeah, so when Neil goes back for Edie, or no, goes back for Wingrow, even though he's clear in a way, free.

• 12:05Bill Simmons?

Oh, that's Dan Campbell, that's fourth and nine.

• 12:07Chris Ryan?

Yeah, that's like, I'm faking a punt up nine.

• 12:09Bill Simmons?

Fourth and nine from the 10.

• 12:11Speaker 03

  Yeah, but then there's some that it's like, it's a tush push, it's a lock, it's a guarantee.

• 12:15Bill Simmons?

All right, that's good, I think we worked that one in somehow. Good one. Congrats to Will Hanselman. Here's a question from Kevin O'Connell.

• 12:22Chris Ryan?

Cause he's got some dime on his hands?

• 12:25Speaker 03

He's out of work now, yeah.

• 12:26Bill Simmons?

I think no relation. Why the hell haven't you done a rollerball episode? I was sure you'd do it during 70's sports movie month, the mustaches, the lapels, the bonkers sport, the more bonkers plot, Jimmy fucking Khan. I know you're all riding the high of finally doing Pulp Fiction after teasing it for so long, but to quote the wolves, quote the wolf, let's not start sucking each other's dicks yet. I feel like every fifth episode, Bill is itching to let the rollerball discussion loose. Is he the only one who wants it? I would love to get into which current athletes would succeed at rollerball, how a rollerball fantasy would work, what the hell is the point of that scene of those rich people blowing up trees?

• 13:04Chris Ryan?

  When you're-

• 13:05Bill Simmons?

  These are all great comments.

• 13:06Chris Ryan?

When we finish this pod, Craig and I are gonna do sort of a footnote pod about which emails we think you secretly sent.

• 13:12Bill Simmons?

  Now, I did that.

• 13:13Chris Ryan?

Bill is so handsome, when will you let him do rollerball?

• 13:16Speaker 03

You are my son's spirit animal.

• 13:19Bill Simmons?

I think, I think faking mailbag answers and questions is one of the worst things you can do as a host, I would never do it. Now, what's funny is Kevin O'Connell wrote like four or five different rollerball emails over the, he really wants it. Um.

• 13:33Speaker 03

I've never seen that movie. I have no relationship to it.

• 13:35Chris Ryan?

I think it should have gone in probably 70 Sports, but I'm sure we'll find a spot for it.

• 13:39Bill Simmons?

It might be the 50th anniversary. I think I had it on my schedule.

• 13:42Speaker 03

  It's 75.

• 13:42Chris Ryan?

  Jimmy Con July?

• 13:45Bill Simmons?

Jimmy July? Well, unfortunately, we've done most of his, most of his movies.

• 13:51Chris Ryan?

Well, can we find three other Jimmys to put in July?

• 13:54Speaker 03

  Sure.

• 13:54Bill Simmons?

  Actors named Jimmy.

• 13:56Speaker 03

  Jim Carrey, yeah.

• 13:58Bill Simmons?

Which current athletes would succeed at playing rollerball? Josh Allen was the, so rollerball, they're skating around a rink.

• 14:05Speaker 03

It's like a fake extreme sport, right?

• 14:07Bill Simmons?

It's like football crossed with the roller derby and it's just incredibly violent.

• 14:10Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 14:11Bill Simmons?

So Josh Allen would be kind of amazing at it. He would be my pick anyway. Craig's got to see that one.

• 14:16Chris Ryan?

  Cooper Dejean.

• 14:18Bill Simmons?

New category idea from John Hagaman. Here it is. Was there a porn parody of this movie? He just wants to know.

• 14:25Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 14:26Bill Simmons?

Um, could be a quiz style format that would generate some surprising results. I'm pretty sure the answer is yes for the Blair Witch Project. I immediately thought about how bad this would be for Google and viruses searching for this stuff. I did find a Reddit thread of, of like 150 porn parody titles that actually happened.

• 14:46Chris Ryan?

Was that on the Bill Simmons Reddit?

• 14:47Bill Simmons?

It was not. It was on some movies Reddit.

• 14:51Speaker 03

There are definitely porn parodies for most popular movies.

• 14:53Bill Simmons?

  Well, I went.

• 14:54Speaker 03

Do they still do those? I don't know.

• 14:56Bill Simmons?

I went through and found some that have actually been done of movies we did on the rewatchables, including Shaving Ryan's Privates.

• 15:04Speaker 03

  Right.

• 15:05Bill Simmons?

Titty Slickers. I don't remember that one. Forrest Hump. The Sperminator. Come and Comer.

• 15:12Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 15:12Bill Simmons?

Know that existed. What About Boob? Die Hard On.

• 15:17Speaker 03

  Yeah, good.

• 15:18Bill Simmons?

When Harry Fucked Sally. Legs Wide Shut. Good Will Humping. My Best Friend's Wedding with Two Ts. And then Glad He Ate Her.

• 15:28Chris Ryan?

  A Gladiator?

• 15:30Speaker 03

We should make you guys come up with the porn title for every, every movie.

• 15:33Bill Simmons?

There's something there. I, I, I do think it is going to be when we're doing one now, doing one going forward. I will check to see if there is a porn parody.

• 15:40Chris Ryan?

So like for Manchester by the Sea, what would be the porn parody?

• 15:43Bill Simmons?

They probably didn't do that one. Do they still make porn parodies now?

• 15:47Chris Ryan?

  Man in the CC?

• 15:48Bill Simmons?

Now it's just like, now they just do scenes. Do they even make movies anymore?

• 15:51Chris Ryan?

That's why I was asking Craig. He's younger, you know?

• 15:54Bill Simmons?

  Craig's like, no comment.

• 15:55Speaker 03

  I don't know.

• 15:57Bill Simmons?

Category idea from Jordan Grimmer. Best, worst, five-word summary of the movie. Similar to Bill's movie trailer elevator pitch idea. Panelists offer their best or worst five-word summary of the movie, or their impression of the movie. Example, heat. An LA bank heist unravels. Or a guy reads book about metals. So I guess before we get into categories, we would all have to do a five-word summary of the movie?

• 16:25Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 16:25Bill Simmons?

  I'm not against this.

• 16:26Speaker 03

Or if I haven't seen the movie, you guys text me your five-word summaries.

• 16:30Bill Simmons?

This is what, yeah, like we're explaining to Craig what the movie is in five words.

• 16:34Chris Ryan?

Godfather, Italian-American family goes through decades.

• 16:38Bill Simmons?

  That's six words.

• 16:39Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 16:39Bill Simmons?

Yeah. I don't know, I like the game of it. We may try it for a couple.

• 16:43Chris Ryan?

  Italian-American family eats dinner.

• 16:45Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 16:48Bill Simmons?

A big-picture question from Captain Jack. What movie? I'm glad Captain Jack's doing well, by the way. What movie have you always wanted to do, but you were scared nobody would listen? Also, what movie have you always wanted?

• 17:01Chris Ryan?

  That has not bothered us.

• 17:03Bill Simmons?

Also, what movie have you always wanted to do and are scared nobody would listen, but you're doing it anyway?

• 17:10Bill Simmons?

  C.R., you want to go?

• 17:11Chris Ryan?

I mean, Cruising was the movie that I think we had teased for a really long time, that we were like, would 17 people listen to?

• 17:16Bill Simmons?

  We'll never actually do it.

• 17:17Chris Ryan?

And then I feel like culture met us kind of where we were. And Cruising had like a little bit of a revival.

• 17:23Bill Simmons?

Blu-ray 4K Cruising coming out in March. Seriously.

• 17:26Speaker 03

  The 4K.

• 17:27Chris Ryan?

  The re-cruising.

• 17:28Bill Simmons?

  4K.

• 17:29Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 17:30Bill Simmons?

Are we doing the re-cruising when that comes out?

• 17:32Chris Ryan?

  Um, what about you?

• 17:35Bill Simmons?

All right, so the movie I've always wanted to do, but I was scared nobody would listen, is Eddie and the Cruisers, which we've talked about forever.

• 17:40Chris Ryan?

Which is also hard because Eddie and the Cruisers is not on streaming, correct?

• 17:44Bill Simmons?

It's not on streaming. You and I, you told me it was on TMC. I have it on cable. It's saved on my thing. Craig's never seen it. It really hurts my feelings that it's not available. I don't, everything's available. How is it not on TV?

• 17:56Chris Ryan?

We've, we've broken through that barrier before. We got Pump Up the Volume back on streaming.

• 18:01Speaker 03

The only thing, the only one that was tough, I actually got a text from a friend of a friend who is a die-hard Rewatchables fan, and they watch every movie that we cover. And she was asking how she could find The Vanishing.

• 18:13Bill Simmons?

  It's gone?

• 18:14Speaker 03

  It's, you can't find it.

• 18:15Chris Ryan?

  The American Vanishing is gone?

• 18:16Speaker 03

The American Vanishing is impossible to find. You can't stream it anywhere.

• 18:19Bill Simmons?

Craig. Drink the coffee. Eddie and the Cruisers needs to come back. Tubi, you greedy motherfuckers, you're making so much money right now.

• 18:29Chris Ryan?

You got the super bowl red carpet.

• 18:31Bill Simmons?

Rewatch those movies that are on your carousel.

• 18:33Chris Ryan?

We were watching football the other day and it was just like Tubi this and Tubi that. I was like, oh, look who's come out and decided to play with the big boys.

• 18:40Bill Simmons?

Oh, you think you're better than us, Tubi. Just put Eddie and the Cruisers on there and, or else we're declaring war.

• 18:48Speaker 03

  So wait, yours was cruising?

• 18:49Chris Ryan?

That was the one that I was like, this will be our last pod if we actually go for it.

• 18:53Bill Simmons?

Well, what's your one you want to do now, but you're scared nobody would listen? I mean, you've certainly sent me a couple. Why can't you just know it off the top of your head? Pre-vaccine, you would have been able to come up with it.

• 19:05Speaker 03

So this is just niche movie that you love, but nobody else cares about? Or you think it's too controversial?

• 19:11Chris Ryan?

  It would probably be.

• 19:15Chris Ryan?

I honestly, cruising would just like be like, if you can do cruising, if you can do proof of life, you can do anything. If you can do Pump Up the Volume, when Pump Up the Volume's not available to be seen, then what can't you do?

• 19:27Speaker 03

  True.

• 19:27Bill Simmons?

Yeah. So like Carlito's Way is too big.

• 19:29Chris Ryan?

It's huge. I mean, I'm dying to do that.

• 19:32Bill Simmons?

So what movie have you always wanted to do and are scared nobody would listen?

• 19:37Bill Simmons?

But you might do it anyway. I want to do Gymkhata at some point. It might be a me and Kyle Branter. It's this movie. Yeah, it's, I'm not even going to tell you what it's about.

• 19:50Speaker 03

Give me the five, the five word summary.

• 19:53Bill Simmons?

So it's after the 84 Olympics, it's Kurt Thomas, this gymnast that was, won a gold medal. And they kind of make it, it's an action movie. He gets, he goes to some country and he's got to rescue somebody. But during the movie, the action scenes, there's somehow gymnastics in them. So there's like a pommel horse where he fights a guy, but he swings in the pommel horse. I can't even describe how awful this movie is. And I was thinking Gymkhata might be mine. All right, next one. This one's for you, CR. It's from Bobby Sleeth, 2E's. I listened to the There Will Be Blood episode and laughed my fucking ass off when CR did the Jackson mainline from Star is Born in Daniel Plainview's voice.

• 20:31Chris Ryan?

  I'd forgotten I did that.

• 20:33Bill Simmons?

I'd like to have another look at your face, please.

• 20:37Bill Simmons?

Turn around. I'd like to look at your face.

• 20:39Speaker 03

I'd get another look at you.

• 20:42Bill Simmons?

Therefore, I'd like to nominate Daniel Plainview as consideration for would this movie be better with category? And suggest that Wayne Jenkins and some of the other candidates away for a very long time.

• 20:53Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, well, so.

• 20:54Bill Simmons?

I love adding Daniel Plainview to that. That's a great idea.

• 20:57Chris Ryan?

Do you feel like there should be a promotion and relegation system?

• 21:01Bill Simmons?

  Ooh.

• 21:02Chris Ryan?

  For the.

• 21:03Bill Simmons?

We've already got rid of a couple of people, right?

• 21:05Chris Ryan?

Yeah, but we also, we got rid of one and added three.

• 21:07Speaker 03

But there needs to be like five or seven.

• 21:09Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 21:10Speaker 03

  And you get.

• 21:10Bill Simmons?

Do you feel like you have some plain view in you in 2025?

• 21:13Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 21:13Bill Simmons?

  So we'll add him.

• 21:15Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 21:15Speaker 03

What else are you working on at home?

• 21:17Bill Simmons?

There's another one coming up that's even better than this.

• 21:20Chris Ryan?

  Jerry Jones?

• 21:22Chris Ryan?

Would this movie have been improved with an eight minute Jerry Jones monologue?

• 21:28Bill Simmons?

That's a good idea. I'm gonna throw that in. A sequel question.

• 21:32Chris Ryan?

Like would Black Panther be improved if Jerry Jones was just like, here's how I bought the Cowboys?

• 21:36Speaker 03

Sitting in front of a cue card for three minutes?

• 21:37Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 21:38Bill Simmons?

  What would, when that happened?

• 21:42Bill Simmons?

At what point during the scene did you realize it was fucking awesome? It took about 40 seconds for me and then I was like.

• 21:50Speaker 03

When he got a little misty.

• 21:51Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I was like, wow, am I, am I on drugs or is this really good?

• 21:54Chris Ryan?

I also think that when they cut away to Billy Bob and Ham and the various like reaction shots, they, they seem legit impressed.

• 22:01Bill Simmons?

Yeah. I did. I asked Ham and Ham said there was, there was some editing.

• 22:05Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 22:06Bill Simmons?

  I think Ham felt upstaged.

• 22:10Speaker 03

  Calling out Jerry.

• 22:11Bill Simmons?

  He was like, settle down.

• 22:12Chris Ryan?

Well, they're like Don Draper. Why don't you lie there with some tubes up your nose while the Cowboys owner does a 10 minute scene?

• 22:18Bill Simmons?

  Does Don Draper come back?

• 22:20Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 22:21Bill Simmons?

Okay. A sequel question from Stephen McDonald.

• 22:27Bill Simmons?

With Den of Thieves two out now and Heat two being worked on. Have you asked Affleck what the town two would look like? The answer is yes. I bring it up probably every time I've ever talked to him. He suggests.

• 22:39Chris Ryan?

  Does Affleck suggest?

• 22:40Bill Simmons?

No, this is the emailer. Would Shine? Who has strong gem traits be all grown up, running a crew and tracking down Dougie, who may or may not be Shine's pop? That's a possibility. Would they be in conflict or would Doug come out of retirement to mentor her? Both? Or is there a whole new storyline with Shine and Krista out of the picture? My, my feeling is, so Doug ends up in.

• 23:01Chris Ryan?

  In Florida, right?

• 23:02Bill Simmons?

  Florida Keys.

• 23:02Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 23:03Bill Simmons?

Right? He's checked out. He's got money.

• 23:06Bill Simmons?

I think Shine has grown up.

• 23:09Bill Simmons?

And is involved in Charlestown again, and somehow somebody's in danger.

• 23:14Chris Ryan?

How old is Shine in the movie?

• 23:15Bill Simmons?

  Shine's a little kid, so that's.

• 23:17Chris Ryan?

  She's like twenty now, okay.

• 23:18Bill Simmons?

Shine would be twenty and maybe her and her boyfriend now are running Charlestown and somehow Doug, somebody in Doug's life is in danger.

• 23:25Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 23:26Bill Simmons?

  Right?

• 23:27Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 23:27Bill Simmons?

And he had, and he has to go back and save.

• 23:29Chris Ryan?

So you wanted to go back to Boston? You don't want Miami, the town?

• 23:33Bill Simmons?

Well, that could be the other way it goes is Shine and her, her boyfriend, who's basically like Gary Oldman in True Romance.

• 23:40Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, wash up in Florida.

• 23:41Bill Simmons?

She's like, we gotta get our revenge on, in the Florida Keys. And then it becomes this Florida Keys crossing the town.

• 23:46Chris Ryan?

Yeah, they could go down and get some mojitos.

• 23:48Speaker 03

  A little running scared.

• 23:49Bill Simmons?

  Right?

• 23:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 23:50Bill Simmons?

Here's the thing, I think the town has to happen. I think there has to be a heist. And I think it has to be in Boston again.

• 23:57Chris Ryan?

Is there another iconic Boston landmark that could be robbed?

• 24:03Bill Simmons?

  Beyond Fenway Park?

• 24:04Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 24:07Bill Simmons?

Yeah, the Boston Garden's gone. Um.

• 24:12Bill Simmons?

Not like Fenway, no. I don't think so. Maybe they could rob Harvard?

• 24:18Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 24:19Bill Simmons?

  Good Will Hunting, Cross.

• 24:20Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 24:21Bill Simmons?

These fucking spoiled brats, rich kids going to Harvard.

• 24:26Bill Simmons?

  Get their money back.

• 24:26Chris Ryan?

Rob Harvard? What are you gonna rob?

• 24:28Bill Simmons?

  I don't know.

• 24:28Chris Ryan?

  Important documents.

• 24:29Bill Simmons?

I don't know. So you would set it in Massachusetts or the Keys?

• 24:33Chris Ryan?

Florida. I think people try to redo this. Like when they do sequels, I think they try to just run back the hits instead of like expanding it out.

• 24:39Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:40Chris Ryan?

And I think it would be really cool if it like Shine shows up in Florida and is like, I need a million bucks by next week or these guys in Boston are gonna kill me. Cause my boyfriend's gotten us in trouble.

• 24:50Bill Simmons?

  Shine shows up.

• 24:51Chris Ryan?

And Doug is like, I'll do one last job for you.

• 24:54Bill Simmons?

Shine shows up, it seems good initially. How'd you, how'd you find me?

• 24:58Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 24:58Bill Simmons?

We have a how'd you find me scene.

• 24:59Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 25:00Bill Simmons?

Then we have, uh, I'm just drifting around, blah, blah, blah, but then she.

• 25:04Chris Ryan?

Do you bring Blake Lively back?

• 25:05Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yes.

• 25:08Bill Simmons?

We absolutely bring Blake Gladby back. Um, is she allowed to work still?

• 25:12Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 25:12Bill Simmons?

Yeah, she's, okay. Yeah, she's back. Think, right?

• 25:16Chris Ryan?

We just won't cast Baldoni in it. He's out.

• 25:18Bill Simmons?

Baldoni, Baldoni is the bad guy. This is it. This is how.

• 25:23Chris Ryan?

This is how we bring everybody together. We bring all the five families together.

• 25:26Bill Simmons?

Baldoni is the drug lord in the Florida Keys. I, I will say, I think the Florida Keys is one of the great underrated, uh, movie, TV locations.

• 25:35Chris Ryan?

I was so, yeah. There could be a Florida movie month, probably, right?

• 25:38Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah.

• 25:39Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 25:39Bill Simmons?

What was the movie, what was the TV show we liked on Netflix? Bloodline, Bloodsport?

• 25:43Chris Ryan?

  Bloodline.

• 25:44Bill Simmons?

  Bloodline.

• 25:44Chris Ryan?

  That was setting the keys.

• 25:45Bill Simmons?

  I watched that pre-vaccine.

• 25:46Chris Ryan?

  Kyle Chandler.

• 25:46Bill Simmons?

  Kyle Chandler, right.

• 25:48Chris Ryan?

  Jesus. Where'd this come from?

• 25:50Bill Simmons?

  I don't know. That's a running bet.

• 25:52Chris Ryan?

You just did, like, the other day, you did, like, here are the last 25 years of NBA history. And you're like, oh, I can't remember Baldoni is in this.

• 26:00Bill Simmons?

Bloodline had the guy Mendelson, who ended up in, in, uh,

• 26:04Chris Ryan?

  Ben Mendelson, yeah.

• 26:04Bill Simmons?

  In Ozark.

• 26:05Chris Ryan?

  Uh huh.

• 26:06Bill Simmons?

It had our guy Kyle Chandler.

• 26:08Chris Ryan?

  Ben Mendelson's not in Ozark.

• 26:09Bill Simmons?

Wasn't he, you know, he was season three, season, oh, maybe he wasn't.

• 26:13Chris Ryan?

  No, I'll get on it.

• 26:14Bill Simmons?

Who was the brother in Oz, who was Laura Linney's brother in Ozark? That was Ben Mendelson? Oh, yeah, you're right. I'm mixing up my character actors I love. I like the keys. New category from Jordan G.

• 26:27Bill Simmons?

How about a best call out? Or what I like to call the Lieutenant Weinberg Award for a character unnecessarily calling someone out. What did Colonel Jessup have against Lieutenant Weinberg? Well, it was bailed on, I said it.

• 26:39Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 26:39Bill Simmons?

For example, in Old School, when Will Ferrell goes streaking, he says, come on, snoopy loop. Or in Superbad, when Jonah Hill calls out Dave Franco and Jim Sucker for pissing himself as a kid. Who says no to this category? You? You editorial director, Ryan?

• 26:56Bill Simmons?

  I'm not against it.

• 26:57Chris Ryan?

  I like it.

• 26:57Bill Simmons?

We could throw it into the, into the possibles.

• 27:00Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 27:00Bill Simmons?

I'm gonna keep an eye out for it. I don't know how many movies have this.

• 27:03Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I think that happens a lot, like, in spy thrillers, like, you'll all of a sudden get the Ed Norton, Chris Cooper, uh, character to, like, start screaming at people who are like, god damn it, I need a secure line! And you're just like, whoa, this guy was just getting coffee a second ago.

• 27:18Bill Simmons?

So maybe it's like the Lieutenant Weinberg drive-by shooting award for,

• 27:22Chris Ryan?

  Oh, I like that.

• 27:23Bill Simmons?

Most unexpected, like, drive-by shooting of somebody else in the movie?

• 27:26Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 27:27Bill Simmons?

All right. I don't mind that one. This is, this is a good one. We're not gonna be able to give it out that often. It's a new category from Jake Oakman. Some interesting names. The Jules Winfield That Guy Graduation Award. When a that guy gal so owns a role that they go from becoming that guy to an actual name overnight.

• 27:48Speaker 03

It was this role, this movie that elevated them?

• 27:50Chris Ryan?

Yes. So like, I think Giamatti in Sideways is a really good one from this, right?

• 27:55Bill Simmons?

Great one. So he says, this is named after the greatest that guy graduation in history, when Sam Jackson played Jules and went from that guy from Goodfellas or Jurassic Park to Samuel motherfucking L. motherfucking Jackson. Other examples he had Bradley Cooper in The Hangover, Glenn Powell on Top Gun Maverick.

• 28:12Speaker 03

Mm-hmm. This is a great category, and it can be within the Joey Pants Award.

• 28:17Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 28:18Chris Ryan?

Is there a graduation day in this, in this, in this film?

• 28:21Bill Simmons?

So I thought, then Boogie Nights had two.

• 28:23Speaker 03

  Wahlberg?

• 28:24Chris Ryan?

  Cheadle?

• 28:25Bill Simmons?

No, it had John C. Reilly and Philip Seymour Hoffman. I think before and after, I didn't, I knew John C. Reilly, but I didn't. And then after that, I was like, John C. Reilly, I love that guy.

• 28:35Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 28:36Bill Simmons?

So, but Sam is the best one. So I'm gonna keep an eye on this one, too. I like the graduation concept. Uh, just a fact from Todd A. in Dublin, Ohio. Love the rewatchables, big fan of All Things The Ringer. I can't believe you guys can spend so much time on the women rounders and not cover the fact that Gretchen Moles', real-life husband, Todd Williams, used to be married to Famke Jansen. The guy pulled off the real-life reverse Mike McDee. Didn't know that. Didn't come up with that fascinating research.

• 29:06Chris Ryan?

How is it that that's, we've done rounders twice.

• 29:08Bill Simmons?

  We've done rounders twice.

• 29:09Chris Ryan?

  And that never came up.

• 29:11Bill Simmons?

This is really good. New category from Rob Shire. The Steven Seagal Hard to Kill Award for did the sex scene in the movie need a better intimacy coordinator?

• 29:20Chris Ryan?

Yeah. I was thinking about this. Roadhouse would have this, maybe Basic Instinct.

• 29:25Speaker 03

  Sure.

• 29:26Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 29:27Bill Simmons?

I just like having a Steven Seagal category. Remember when you didn't know who he was? And then we brought him into your life?

• 29:33Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:34Bill Simmons?

And it was one of the best things we ever did?

• 29:35Speaker 03

Now I watch Under Siege Weekly.

• 29:36Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 29:37Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:38Chris Ryan?

Steven Seagal heard about no intimacy coordinator in a Nora, and he was like, I respect it. We didn't have one in Hard to Kill either.

• 29:44Bill Simmons?

  Good move.

• 29:46Chris Ryan?

  Way to go, Sean Baker.

• 29:49Bill Simmons?

Category idea from Mark in Ottawa. This didn't quite get there, but I wanted to hit it. For movies that have a huge twist, rate any movie's crazy, unexpected twist. And then he said, I actually thought of this when listening to the Sixth Sense podcast, which is clearly a 10 out of 10 for a twist. Psycho's 10 out of 10, Darth Vader being Luke's dad. The Matrix, 9 out of 10, humans are just batteries. Fight Club, 8 out of 10. You could also have fun when the intended surprise twist is blatantly obvious. Oregon, still being alive in Twin, in the Two Towers, was a 1 out of 10. I don't know what that means.

• 30:24Chris Ryan?

  Aragorn.

• 30:24Bill Simmons?

  Aragorn?

• 30:25Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 30:25Speaker 03

  Lord of the Rings.

• 30:26Bill Simmons?

  So that's a 1 out of 10 twist?

• 30:28Chris Ryan?

Uh, I guess so, yeah. There's, there's not a lot of twists in.

• 30:31Bill Simmons?

So next time we do a movie with a twist, I think maybe we bring in the scale. But then.

• 30:36Speaker 03

Is Twin Towers coming in 2025?

• 30:38Bill Simmons?

  It's not.

• 30:44Bill Simmons?

But then, this is the end of the email.

• 30:46Chris Ryan?

Late period Bill getting into Tolkien.

• 30:50Bill Simmons?

I've also got a related entertaining story about another plot twist movie, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. My Trekkie buddies and I went opening night. The 7pm show sold out, so we just waited in line for the 9:30. When the 7pm show lets out, one of the guys yells out, Spock dies at the end. Parentheses, personally, I'd rate this an 8 out of 10. Some large guy who was in line next to us for the 9:30 steps out of line, punches the guy out, and then calmly walks back into our line. Moral of the story, don't mess with the Trekkies. That would have been an amazing thing to see in person.

• 31:21Chris Ryan?

I have a similar story to this, which was like spring 96, like whenever Menace of Society came out.

• 31:30Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 31:30Chris Ryan?

I had already seen it in theaters and was going back for the second time with a bunch of friends, but like, was a kid and couldn't control myself. So I was like, and then there's just a fucking amazing shot when they go through there. And then this guy's like bang and bang. And this dude just turns around and goes, excuse me, I haven't seen the movie yet.

• 31:49Chris Ryan?

  I just like melted.

• 31:50Bill Simmons?

You're like, I'm never talking to him again.

• 31:53Speaker 03

I had a college professor, I was in a, I took a film class and he was talking about movie spoilers and how if you haven't seen these certain movies, there, there's like a, there's a certain amount of time where if you haven't seen it, he didn't care.

• 32:02Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 32:02Speaker 03

He asked the class, it was a big class, two, 300 people, he said, raise your hand if you haven't seen The Sixth Sense. I hadn't yet. And maybe 18, 20, 25 people raised their hand out of 300. And then he goes, Bruce Willis is a ghost. And I was just like, are you fucking kidding me? And then he was like, has anyone here seen Fight Club? And I hadn't yet. And I got up and I left.

• 32:22Chris Ryan?

Did you really? Did you go back to the class or did you drop it right there?

• 32:25Speaker 03

No, I, I just left for the rest.

• 32:26Bill Simmons?

Why'd he do that? That's so weird.

• 32:28Speaker 03

Yeah, he sucked. I forget his name, but.

• 32:30Bill Simmons?

I told this story in the Usual Suspects pod.

• 32:36Bill Simmons?

I told the story when Jacko made me mad and I ruined Usual Suspects for him. That was the proudest I've ever been. He was being a dick. I was like, Kevin Spacey.

• 32:43Speaker 03

  There's nothing worse.

• 32:44Bill Simmons?

  He's like, no, why?

• 32:46Speaker 03

There's nothing worse than spoiling a movie for somebody.

• 32:48Bill Simmons?

Category suggestion from George in the UK. The Forrest Gump premature ejaculation award. What do you think this is?

• 32:56Speaker 03

  Uh, movie ended too quickly?

• 32:58Bill Simmons?

Yeah. The movie finishes sooner than you'd expected.

• 33:01Chris Ryan?

I was wondering what the reverse of this would be. Like, what is the, they went on for another 20 or 30 minutes longer than I thought?

• 33:08Speaker 03

  Viagra?

• 33:08Chris Ryan?

Yeah. It's just like the one more pump. Like, like what is, what is the reverse Forrest Gump? That where you're like, oh wow, so Demi Thebes, like, we're still going, huh? Now we're in England.

• 33:19Speaker 03

  This movie ended four times?

• 33:21Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 33:22Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Who, who did that in a movie?

• 33:25Bill Simmons?

I was gonna say Bradley Cooper in Limitless? Oh, it's the, the Dirk Diggler?

• 33:30Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 33:30Bill Simmons?

  Jack?

• 33:31Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 33:31Bill Simmons?

  I can do it again.

• 33:32Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 33:33Bill Simmons?

Yeah. All right. A request from Michael Bressard. I love your podcast on the rewatchables. I'm 44, enjoy listening to you guys talk about films that I love. I've been waiting a long time for you to do The Hunt for Red October. Many fans, and I consider this an important film to cover, as it was masterfully done with an outstanding cast, please consider this movie for us raging fans.

• 33:54Chris Ryan?

  One of my favorite films.

• 33:57Speaker 03

So this is just a request, no question. Just do Hunt for Red October.

• 33:59Bill Simmons?

There's a reason we haven't done it yet. Chris knows the reason.

• 34:02Chris Ryan?

Cause we're gonna go to war with Russia and you're waiting for the right peg?

• 34:06Bill Simmons?

I told you to watch Inside Moves and I do Hunt for October. You even fucking watch it all of 2024.

• 34:12Chris Ryan?

  See, I think this-

• 34:12Bill Simmons?

This guy, Michael Broussard, sitting there waiting for us to do Hunt for October.

• 34:17Chris Ryan?

Nope. There, there's a, we have an opportunity for a fun trend every year where, where Chris and Sean have to make you watch a movie that we do on the rewatchables and then you have to make the two of them watch a movie that we do on the rewatchables.

• 34:28Bill Simmons?

Category coming up, but just, just so you know.

• 34:32Chris Ryan?

  That's what's, that's what we're hanging on.

• 34:33Bill Simmons?

  The greedy overlords of Tubi.

• 34:35Chris Ryan?

  I will put it on-

• 34:35Bill Simmons?

And selfish Chris Ryan. And meanwhile, Inside Moves on Tubi, at least for now.

• 34:41Chris Ryan?

I'm gonna put it up on Letterboxd. You'll see it when I watch Inside Moves. It's gonna be this weekend.

• 34:45Bill Simmons?

You know what? I won't see it because I'm not on Letterboxd.

• 34:49Chris Ryan?

I'll take a screenshot and send it to you.

• 34:50Bill Simmons?

Oh, what's your watch tonight? Oh.

• 34:56Bill Simmons?

Theme month suggested from Logan Van Winkle. These names are like nuts.

• 35:00Chris Ryan?

Uh, that's because they're all from you. All AI-generated.

• 35:06Bill Simmons?

So this is an interesting theme month. Rotten rewatchables. A month of rewatchables that deserve better on Rotten Tomatoes and currently hold a score of 50% or less. Suggestions. Billy Madison, Ace Ventura, Rat Race.

• 35:18Chris Ryan?

Didn't we do some kind of invert? No, was that on Big Picture? I can't remember. Did we do some sort of inverted month or something like that?

• 35:26Bill Simmons?

No, I used to do the Rotten Tomato scores before Raj.

• 35:28Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 35:29Bill Simmons?

And fantasy would get super upset about it. And it was just like, it-

• 35:32Chris Ryan?

But now you do Roger Ebert as ChatGPT, which is more offensive than Rotten Tomatoes.

• 35:38Bill Simmons?

Or brilliant. Depend, depends where you're sitting.

• 35:42Chris Ryan?

Is your dream to replace me and Sean and Craig with actual Siskel and Ebert ChatGPT?

• 35:48Bill Simmons?

  Is that possible?

• 35:49Chris Ryan?

Probably. Yeah, we're a couple of years away.

• 35:52Bill Simmons?

I don't mind the idea of rotten month. I'd have to look to see what movies. There's been, definitely been some movies that-

• 35:57Chris Ryan?

I would like to see the stats on the movies we've done. Like, how many below, sub 50 percenters have we done?

• 36:01Speaker 03

  A decent amount, I bet.

• 36:03Bill Simmons?

Do we need like a, like a Billy, who's the guy in Moneyball? Billy Bean's assistant?

• 36:08Chris Ryan?

  Paul DePietes.

• 36:08Bill Simmons?

No, but the fake, the fake composite character? Yeah, Jonah Hill's fake character. We need like a Jonah Hill for the rewatchables.

• 36:14Chris Ryan?

  A stats guy?

• 36:15Speaker 03

  Advanced analytics?

• 36:16Bill Simmons?

Yeah, just like an advanced analytics department.

• 36:17Chris Ryan?

There's some really good spreadsheets out there. People, people do the work. We have to, I just have to look them up.

• 36:22Speaker 03

Yeah, we, it would be fun to know the worst rated movie we've ever done.

• 36:26Bill Simmons?

Well, the most disliked movie I ever done was Country Strong. People are still upset, but we did that for your wife, Liz Kelly.

• 36:33Speaker 03

The movie's not that bad. People need to relax.

• 36:35Bill Simmons?

People can fuck off. Category idea from Connor Cusson. A suggestion for a new category is, when would I have died? You're the main character or a member of a team crew. At what point in the movie do you think you actually would have died? Example in Die Hard, Carl's brother kills me in five seconds.

• 36:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 36:51Bill Simmons?

  Oh, this is good.

• 36:52Speaker 03

  This is good.

• 36:53Bill Simmons?

  Really solid.

• 36:54Chris Ryan?

I have a couple. They're pretty obvious, though. Like, I think I would have swum out after the girl in the first scene of Jaws. Like, I would have just been like-

• 37:02Bill Simmons?

Oh, so you die in Jaws?

• 37:03Chris Ryan?

Immediately, first scene. I'm not making any of the leaps and Raiders in the first with the boulder rolling behind me.

• 37:10Bill Simmons?

  The boulder just gets you.

• 37:11Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I just don't have much of a broad jump.

• 37:15Chris Ryan?

Then there are moments where I might have died as a bystander, which I really like, which is like my financial advisor is right by the bank robbery in Heat. So I can imagine like coming out and be like, I'm really glad I invested in my Roth.

• 37:34Bill Simmons?

  That's a good one.

• 37:34Speaker 03

What about you? This is a good category.

• 37:37Bill Simmons?

Well, I was thinking about Cast Away.

• 37:39Chris Ryan?

  Uh huh.

• 37:41Bill Simmons?

How long I would have toughened out on the island. Yeah, not knowing what was happening to sports. Forget about family, like, just be like, fuck, what's going on in the NBA playoffs right now? Like, check, it's April 19th. I wonder who's in round one. Yeah, I think I would have probably attempted what he did with the raft, trying to get over way sooner. I'm probably dead within a year. Amy Vahara was another one I was thinking. I probably would have stayed in the house too late.

• 38:08Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I mean, you're currently doing it, right?

• 38:10Bill Simmons?

Well, no, we're good. We have a good relationship with the ghosts for now. Yeah, it's okay. It's the best it's been.

• 38:20Speaker 03

But did you have like a mediator come in? What happened?

• 38:22Bill Simmons?

No, it's good. The ghost likes us. What do you have? Anything good?

• 38:26Speaker 03

Any zombie apocalypse movie? I'm actually probably just ending it myself. Like I am legend. There's no way I could get anywhere close to where Will Smith got. I'm first 10 minutes, I'm just ending it. I see one zombie, it's over.

• 38:37Bill Simmons?

I was thinking, I was saying to my wife, because I told her about this category, because I can't see unless I have contacts or glasses. I was thinking, basically, everything before 1920, I'm gone.

• 38:46Speaker 03

  Oh, like you couldn't do?

• 38:47Bill Simmons?

  I just can't, like, yeah.

• 38:48Speaker 03

  Unforgiven, you're just like?

• 38:50Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I'm just, I'm a blind guy. I'm killed in the saloon. I'm like, what's going on? Is that Will Penny?

• 38:54Speaker 03

Oh, that's just drunk Billy. He can't see.

• 38:57Bill Simmons?

  I'm just drunk and blind.

• 39:03Bill Simmons?

This episode is brought to you by Searchlight Pictures Wild Horse 9. John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, I like those guys, star in the sharp-witted comedy thriller from Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh. Writer-director of The Banshees of Minnehoshan and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, set in the 1970s, filmed on location on Easter Island. Malkovich and Rockwell play CIA agents Chris and Lee, who are caught in a dangerous game of secrets and survival. Also starring Steve Buscemi, another one of my guys, Parker Posey and Tom Waits. Wild Horse 9 is being hailed by critics as a revitalizing shot of pure entertainment and easily one of the best films of the year. Don't miss Wild Horse 9, only in theaters Friday.

• 40:24Bill Simmons?

Theme month suggestion from Josh Lento. This goes to what we talked about earlier.

• 40:31Bill Simmons?

A different host selects the movie of their choice, co-host. Each week could be a specific selection of one of the rotating hosts other than Mr. Bill Simmons. Bill has no veto power during this month. I was thinking the theme could be referred to as Much to Bill's Chagrin.

• 40:46Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 40:46Speaker 03

I think this is a great idea.

• 40:48Chris Ryan?

What do you do if on Much to Bill's Chagrin Month, we put up like insane numbers? Because we do Lord of the Rings.

• 40:54Speaker 03

It's just Lord of the Rings one, two, and three.

• 40:59Speaker 03

  It's just every Captain America.

• 41:01Bill Simmons?

  I do like this idea.

• 41:02Chris Ryan?

Would you be on these Much to Bill's Chagrin?

• 41:04Bill Simmons?

Yeah. I have to be. I'm just hosting playing point guard, but.

• 41:07Chris Ryan?

But would you be like Julius Randall and like ruining the vibe?

• 41:10Bill Simmons?

  No.

• 41:10Chris Ryan?

  And like not passing?

• 41:11Bill Simmons?

I've never, never do the Julius Randall.

• 41:12Speaker 03

I think, I don't think you should host if you haven't seen it though, right? Somebody else has to host it.

• 41:16Bill Simmons?

No, I'd have to watch it.

• 41:17Speaker 03

Right, but then it should be still Chris hosting Lord of the Rings.

• 41:20Bill Simmons?

  Oh, good idea.

• 41:20Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 41:20Bill Simmons?

Yeah, so, so it's Chris or Sean.

• 41:24Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 41:24Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 41:26Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, that's, that's.

• 41:27Speaker 03

It's still the three of you, but just they're hosting.

• 41:29Bill Simmons?

But if Van wanted to do one.

• 41:31Speaker 03

  Or Van, whoever.

• 41:31Bill Simmons?

So Van would, so you, basically you, if it's your movie, you have to host the pod.

• 41:34Chris Ryan?

Yeah, but there's some, there's a lot of thought that goes into this because you want to pick one that he would never pick.

• 41:39Speaker 03

  Right.

• 41:39Chris Ryan?

But that he would still like be a good sport to watch and be into.

• 41:43Speaker 03

Or you could make him watch Avengers Endgame.

• 41:45Chris Ryan?

But there are a bunch of movies that I know you want to do, but you're like pacing yourself for, right?

• 41:50Bill Simmons?

Yeah, but it would be, I mean, doing, what was the twin?

• 41:54Speaker 03

  Twin Towers.

• 41:54Bill Simmons?

  Twin Towers, that one.

• 41:56Chris Ryan?

The two, it's the two towers.

• 41:57Bill Simmons?

  Two Towers.

• 41:59Speaker 03

  I haven't seen it either.

• 42:00Bill Simmons?

Would I have to see the first one before the second one? Like, how prepped am I?

• 42:03Speaker 03

  Yeah, we should, right?

• 42:05Chris Ryan?

Yeah, you should probably see the first one.

• 42:05Bill Simmons?

So maybe it's like no sequels?

• 42:07Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, that's good. No sequels.

• 42:10Bill Simmons?

So you do like some sort of UK crime thing that where it's just English people.

• 42:13Speaker 03

It'd be great if you, Sean and Van just chose the three Lord of the Rings movies in a row.

• 42:17Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I mean, I, I would probably pick something like.

• 42:22Chris Ryan?

I would probably pick something like Hot Fuzz or Ex Machina or something like that. Like, they're not that, that far out.

• 42:29Bill Simmons?

So I'm just on the pod. I'm like the fourth, fourth co-host. Occasionally I have a couple of points.

• 42:34Chris Ryan?

Right. But the point is not to pick-

• 42:36Bill Simmons?

Most of the time, I'm just like, oh, man. Why this fucking crime drama in the UK that's CR-

• 42:41Speaker 03

It's like when you invite me on to do, I think I was, I came on with you guys to do Alive, right? Didn't I do that movie with you guys?

• 42:46Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 42:47Speaker 03

Yeah. It'll be like that. I hadn't seen it before.

• 42:49Bill Simmons?

  That movie changed your life.

• 42:50Speaker 03

  It did. Altruistic cannibalism.

• 42:53Bill Simmons?

Another theme month idea from Mitchell Moore, who says, "Thank you for the rewatchables and all the laughs and insights you provide each week." We really appreciate all the emails, by the way. My suggestion for a new category is Unwatchables Month. A group of movies you've mentioned multiple times that you know don't work, but you can't help watching. The list is as follows. Bugsy, Indian Summer, Another Forty-Eight Hours, Angel Heart. I really resented that he didn't do Angel Heart-

• 43:21Chris Ryan?

I gotta say, these are pretty watchable movies.

• 43:24Bill Simmons?

  I like it. I don't love Bugsy, but I do, I don't think it's, it's, it's basically the flawed rewatchables concept.

• 43:30Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 43:30Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 43:31Bill Simmons?

But I think we should probably bring that back in 2025.

• 43:34Speaker 03

I think we need to do the Canceled Rewatchables Month.

• 43:37Chris Ryan?

  That's the, that's a-

• 43:37Bill Simmons?

  We have that.

• 43:38Chris Ryan?

  Such a good idea.

• 43:39Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Another theme month idea from Amy Fleischer. She's calling it "Shit Goes Sideways Very Quickly." Adventures in Babysitting, Empire Records, go. Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. I'm throwing in Long Kiss Goodnight is like this too, but that, that's shit goes sideways is a good idea for a month.

• 43:58Chris Ryan?

  Uh, After Hours in there.

• 43:59Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 44:00Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 44:01Bill Simmons?

  Decent idea.

• 44:04Bill Simmons?

So, this is from Logan in Hawaii. He says, "Aloha, rewatchables." His category idea is, "How would Van Lathan get out of this one?" It was a great impromptu moment during Den of Thieves, the re-Den of Thieves, when Chris Ryan asked Van Lathan how he'd excuse himself out of an accidental text. Mr. Lathan Jr.'s response was very entertaining and would be a great addition should opportunity allow him to give him a re-watch. I like that.

• 44:27Chris Ryan?

Yeah. Like, how would you get out of, if you were Karen Hill, how would you get out of flushing all the cocaine when Henry comes home from jail?

• 44:35Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 44:36Chris Ryan?

It's just like, that was all the money we had!

• 44:38Bill Simmons?

  Karen!

• 44:39Chris Ryan?

You know, it's like, I don't want to live in a world where we have to sell cocaine just to make ends meet, you know?

• 44:44Bill Simmons?

Yeah. What was the right move for her there?

• 44:47Chris Ryan?

Uh, probably just to be like, what do you want? The cops were searching the house. Did you want to go away for like, federal drug possession?

• 44:53Speaker 03

The move is she should probably just leave.

• 44:54Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 44:55Bill Simmons?

How good would you be at flushing cocaine down the toilet?

• 44:58Speaker 03

What is the best way to dispose of it?

• 45:00Chris Ryan?

  Like, to disappoint?

• 45:01Bill Simmons?

Well, because they always shake it and then the cocaine just gets everywhere. You really gotta like, it's more about how you open the bag and...

• 45:09Chris Ryan?

No one's ever flushing cocaine down the toilet in a patient way. You know, like, it's usually if you're flushing it down the toilet, I think it's because...

• 45:15Speaker 03

  You have seconds.

• 45:16Chris Ryan?

I think the DA is outside, yeah.

• 45:18Bill Simmons?

Would the toilet really flush that well with all the cocaine in it?

• 45:21Speaker 03

Where else are you going, though? You can't go sink or shower or something.

• 45:23Chris Ryan?

This is a great YouTube series. Is Chris and Bill try, try things that they've seen in movies?

• 45:27Bill Simmons?

Well, I worry when I like, put gum in the toilet, I'm like, is that thing gonna flush? But like, two kilos of cocaine just in 10 flushes?

• 45:35Chris Ryan?

  Oh, God.

• 45:36Bill Simmons?

It feels like, uh, I don't know.

• 45:39Chris Ryan?

Greg, why don't you go get us a kilo of cocaine?

• 45:41Bill Simmons?

Yeah, Greg, get us some fake cocaine.

• 45:42Speaker 03

  I need 24 hours.

• 45:44Bill Simmons?

Question from Jürgen Anderson, two S's. Hi, have a question for you. Who is Diane Waiters?

• 45:54Chris Ryan?

Do you think Jürgen's from the States? I don't.

• 45:56Bill Simmons?

  I do not.

• 45:57Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 45:57Bill Simmons?

Um, this got me thinking, though. We should probably explain who Dion Waiters is.

• 46:01Speaker 03

  Did he say Diane?

• 46:02Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 46:02Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, he said Diane Waiters.

• 46:03Chris Ryan?

  That's fair.

• 46:05Bill Simmons?

Because Dion Waiters now has not played for how many years?

• 46:10Speaker 03

We've discussed replacing the name Dion Waiters with a different player, right?

• 46:14Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I mean, I think that Dion specifically works for the movies that we love to talk about, and it's a celebration. I was thinking that there is like a Sam Darnold Award that we could give out to somebody who has like an incredible three quarters of a movie.

• 46:27Bill Simmons?

Oh, and then just it falls apart?

• 46:29Chris Ryan?

  And then just vanishes, yeah.

• 46:30Speaker 03

Or it's like, they're only good in this movie, like Michael Madsen in Tarantino films or something?

• 46:34Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, that's good.

• 46:37Bill Simmons?

I'm only good in this system, like System QB?

• 46:39Speaker 03

  Yeah, system roles?

• 46:41Chris Ryan?

It's like people who are only good in Sorkin, or only good in Paul Thomas Anderson movies, or whatever, yeah.

• 46:46Bill Simmons?

Like John Michael Higgins in the Christopher Guest movies. The Sam Darnold Award is really interesting. Is that for the movie, or a character?

• 46:54Chris Ryan?

It could also be for their career.

• 46:55Speaker 03

I think it's character who only works in this movie, or actor who only works in this movie, or with this director.

• 47:00Bill Simmons?

But Sam Darnold's a different one. That's like, you were doing good for a while, and then the wheels came off.

• 47:04Speaker 03

Unless you just want to treat it as he was great with Kevin O'Connell in this system.

• 47:08Chris Ryan?

And then we would have to do the Kevin O'Connell press conference afterwards, where he's just like, I just wish him the best on his journey.

• 47:17Bill Simmons?

Anyway, Dion Waiters, he played 418 NBA games. He was a lottery pick for Cleveland. He was, uh, 2013 draft, I think it was the fourth or fifth pick.

• 47:26Speaker 03

Did he come out of high school?

• 47:28Bill Simmons?

No, he spent, yeah, he was at Syracuse. He peaked at 15.9 a game on a crappy 2014 Cavs team before LeBron came back. Bounced around, went to OKC, Miami, finished with the Lakers. But the reason, the reason we really, we, uh, named the heat check after him was because sometimes he would just come in and make everything.

• 47:49Speaker 03

  The microwave, yeah.

• 47:50Bill Simmons?

He'd come in in like, three minutes, he would have 10 points. So the idea of Dion Waiters was better than Dion Waiters, because most of the time he would come in and, you know, miss a couple threes. Then every once in a while, Dion Waiters heat check would happen. So I guess the question is, do we dump Dion Waiters for a more modern heat check guy?

• 48:06Chris Ryan?

Do you feel like there is a comparable, modern equivalent to Dion? I feel like this guy's gotten a little bit legislated out of the game.

• 48:15Bill Simmons?

The Dion Waiters heat check guy?

• 48:16Chris Ryan?

Yeah, the Lou Williams, I came in and I dropped 21 in 18 minutes, but I can't play defense and, you know.

• 48:22Bill Simmons?

I mean, the, the, so Cam Thomas is one, but I don't know what his shelf life is gonna be. Peyton Pritchard's a good one these days, cause Peyton Pritchard's either three points or 28.

• 48:32Chris Ryan?

I was legitimately like, who's Peyton Pritchard for a second?

• 48:37Bill Simmons?

I don't know. The, the Dion though, it feels like we're kinda stuck with it.

• 48:40Speaker 03

It's such a staple of the show.

• 48:41Chris Ryan?

  It's also, it's, he's, he's a, an icon of our pod.

• 48:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 48:46Bill Simmons?

All right. I think I agree.

• 48:47Chris Ryan?

But we can add Sam Darnold, just to mix it up.

• 48:49Speaker 03

I do like the, the system, system actor idea.

• 48:54Bill Simmons?

Here's a heat question from Harley. I don't know if Harley's last name or first name. How many houses does Neil McCauley have and where are they? So he writes down, "The house with no furniture where Chris sleeps is clearly modern sleek and by the water, maybe Malibu."

• 49:08Chris Ryan?

  It's Malibu Colony.

• 49:10Bill Simmons?

When he meets Edie at the cafe, he says he lives up here, so maybe that's Hollywood Hills. They go to the house, stand on the balcony, great view. Seems too expensive to be a rental, also well furnished. Then he leaves her that morning, so was he leaving her alone at his house? Was that her rental or his? Chris Ryan, I, I gave you a heads up on this question. So what's, what's the real estate?

• 49:32Chris Ryan?

Neil lives in Malibu. He lives in, on the, on the beach. When he says, "I live up here," he's joking, cause she goes, "That's really funny." I think he's alluding to the idea that he lives upstairs from the restaurant.

• 49:44Speaker 03

  Ah.

• 49:44Chris Ryan?

There's a couple of times where he says things to Edie that are like, probably purposely to like, lead her astray if she was ever questioned by the police. Like he, I think he says he's from the bay, you know, stuff like that. That he did time in the bay, but he's not from there. And so I think that the house that they sleep in that first night is a rental. And A, it's movie magic, so like, obviously people's houses are usually nicer in the movies and TV. And B, it was the 90s, so maybe Edie could get like, a decent place in the hills.

• 50:09Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 50:09Chris Ryan?

That had a good view. Uh, so that's Edie's place that he leaves her at.

• 50:13Bill Simmons?

So what part of the hills do we think that's in?

• 50:15Chris Ryan?

  I like, thought maybe Beechwood.

• 50:17Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 50:17Chris Ryan?

Or like, kinda like that area.

• 50:19Bill Simmons?

Okay. And then where do we think, uh, the, the guy who fucks them over? And then he shoots him through the TV when he's watching a hockey game. What's that guy's name?

• 50:28Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 50:29Bill Simmons?

  Van Zant?

• 50:30Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, Van Zant.

• 50:31Bill Simmons?

Where was his house? Cause he's climbing up a canyon on that one. That'd have to be where he lives.

• 50:37Bill Simmons?

So we only think one house for Neil.

• 50:39Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 50:39Bill Simmons?

  Probably renting.

• 50:40Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 50:41Bill Simmons?

  Probably rents.

• 50:41Chris Ryan?

  Maybe he has an apartment.

• 50:42Speaker 03

Maybe an apartment in the South Bay. Kind of get away.

• 50:45Chris Ryan?

I could see him having a safe house. Like a, like a Torrance. Yeah.

• 50:50Bill Simmons?

Think he has a burner room like Raheem?

• 50:52Speaker 03

  Definitely. What's the burner room?

• 50:54Bill Simmons?

Raheem has a burner where he talks about in Vegas. He has a burner room. It's this hotel room and then a burner room.

• 51:00Speaker 03

I don't know what that means. What is a burner room?

• 51:01Bill Simmons?

  It's a second room.

• 51:02Speaker 03

  For what?

• 51:04Bill Simmons?

Do whatever you need. If you want to take somebody back.

• 51:07Speaker 03

My apartment has three burner rooms then, I guess.

• 51:09Bill Simmons?

  Burner room. He didn't elaborate.

• 51:11Speaker 03

  Oh, man.

• 51:12Bill Simmons?

They say Joe House has been talking about it ever since. New category from Matt Hennessy. This is wonderful. In honor of Alec Baldwin's Captain George L. B. from the part of it's the two weeks with pay award for the movie character who should have been fired from their job.

• 51:26Chris Ryan?

This is the Vincent Chase award, right?

• 51:29Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 51:30Chris Ryan?

Are we sure this character is good at their job?

• 51:32Bill Simmons?

Yeah. So we'd have to lose Vincent Chase for this?

• 51:34Chris Ryan?

I think we could put George L. B. in for Vincent Chase. Yeah.

• 51:37Bill Simmons?

Is it time Vincent Chase 20 year anniversary?

• 51:39Speaker 03

I don't know. Entourage is coming to Netflix. I feel it. We might have to keep it around.

• 51:44Bill Simmons?

He had examples, the mayor from Jaws, the Italian detective team and the talented Mr. Ripley and all the employers, employees of Empire Records.

• 51:53Chris Ryan?

Empire Records is coming up a lot in this mailbag.

• 51:55Bill Simmons?

I know. A lot of people like Empire Records. 30th anniversary coming up. Might be on the schedule. A theme month from Jen Ducks, who says she's a longtime listener and loves the podcast. She had a quick category idea, best FanDuel line odds. As we're doing something.

• 52:12Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 52:13Bill Simmons?

I guess it would be what were the FanDuel live odds for, you know?

• 52:18Chris Ryan?

Oh, yeah. What are the odds that Neil?

• 52:20Bill Simmons?

Neil's about to kill Wayne Grove.

• 52:21Chris Ryan?

Yeah, that he just stays in the car.

• 52:23Bill Simmons?

It's easy just to use heat as the prism for all these possible categories. Best FanDuel line odds. How long does Chris stay together with the Ashley?

• 52:30Chris Ryan?

What were the odds Charlene was just gonna let Chris enjoy this night?

• 52:34Bill Simmons?

Right. Anyway, he asks, when is Philly month, or she asks, when is Philly month gonna happen? You've teased some Philly movies. Silver Lining's playbook last year was great. I think there's plenty of meat left.

• 52:45Speaker 03

What's on, what's on the Philly Mount Rushmore that hasn't been done yet?

• 52:47Bill Simmons?

  Well, we've done a bunch.

• 52:48Chris Ryan?

Jen suggested Witness, which I think is in, it's being scouted. Uh, At Close Range is Lancaster, but it's still an awesome movie. Um, and then after that, we pretty much just have 12 monkeys left.

• 53:00Bill Simmons?

So we did Philadelphia, we did Trading Places, we did Blowout.

• 53:04Chris Ryan?

  Mm-hmm.

• 53:04Bill Simmons?

Which I think were three of, and then Silver Lining. So we've, we've done some already.

• 53:09Speaker 03

  And Rocky.

• 53:09Bill Simmons?

Well, we haven't done Rocky one, and we haven't done Rocky two.

• 53:12Speaker 03

Oh. Yeah, only three and four. Yeah. Keeping people guessing.

• 53:16Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, we did Creed.

• 53:17Speaker 03

  Yep. Did Creed Live.

• 53:19Bill Simmons?

There's probably a couple others we forgot.

• 53:22Bill Simmons?

What was that vigilante movie with, uh, Tom Skerritt? Fighting Back. That was in Philly.

• 53:28Chris Ryan?

  Was it?

• 53:29Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Tubey. Greedy motherfuckers of Tubey.

• 53:35Bill Simmons?

Fun idea from Andrew Rowan. Two Ace. I think a good category to add when you're doing a crime heist cop movie is where does the inevitable, are you a cop scene rank?

• 53:44Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 53:44Bill Simmons?

Compared to Den of Thieves, Departed, Fast and Furious. In general, I think the next time we do one of these movies, we really have to, they had, need a bunch of special categories.

• 53:54Chris Ryan?

It would be fun to apply this to like Grand Budapest Hotel, though.

• 53:57Bill Simmons?

  Are you a fucking cop?

• 54:01Bill Simmons?

I was thinking of the heist movie staples. Derontas.

• 54:05Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 54:06Bill Simmons?

Are you a cop? Nobody's ever broken in this bank before.

• 54:10Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 54:10Bill Simmons?

We're here for the bank's money, not yours. And I need to know right now, are you in? Those are the five things that have to be in every.

• 54:16Chris Ryan?

I do this job and then I'm out.

• 54:17Speaker 03

Yeah, one last job, for sure.

• 54:18Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 54:19Bill Simmons?

One last job, yeah. Still feel like we can write one of these. Reader idea from Ryan McCabe.

• 54:26Bill Simmons?

Rewatchables is the best podcast available. He praises us for a little bit here. One of the categories that needs to be improved is the CR thinks Luke Wilson hottest take. You all have great ideas, but as a longtime Simmons fan, thank you, and supporter of Mailbags, they've consistently taught me that your fans have the craziest and best hottest takes. That's legitimately how every great Mailbag was built in the old days. He's correct.

• 54:48Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 54:48Bill Simmons?

The emails were great. Tie this to the old fans. Call it the Mailbag hottest take. Solicited hot takes from readers and present those for commentary. Y'all do a fine job, but I know readers and listeners would kill this. I'm not against this idea.

• 55:01Speaker 03

Well, there's only one. You do have to release the movie a week in advance.

• 55:04Chris Ryan?

  Comes down to one man.

• 55:05Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 55:07Chris Ryan?

Well, I don't think we could do is-

• 55:08Bill Simmons?

I don't think you could leak the movie ahead of time because then we're getting all these ideas that would fuck up the podcast.

• 55:12Chris Ryan?

So one thing we could do is on the next show-

• 55:15Speaker 03

They can also send them to me.

• 55:16Chris Ryan?

The next show. As a special like Wednesday YouTube thing, we could read out the reader Luke Wilson hottest takes.

• 55:23Bill Simmons?

Maybe that's what we do. I like the idea of hot takes from readers about movies we've done. I think is a good idea.

• 55:31Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 55:32Chris Ryan?

You don't want anybody getting in your airspace when you're thinking about-

• 55:36Speaker 03

Well, you could have them email me and I can go through them.

• 55:38Bill Simmons?

I'm always like really hesitant of like going on like if there's like a 500 post Reddit thread about the movie. I don't, I want to like come up with my own ideas on the movie and I always feel like that screws me up.

• 55:50Chris Ryan?

And then I'm like, that was on Reddit.

• 55:51Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, it's like, fuck.

• 55:54Bill Simmons?

Uh, from James Rowe, he's a day one Rewatchables fan. His trilogy, Holy Trinity, his Godfather Armageddon of the Town. I have an idea that while I don't think it works as a Rewatchables category, is perfect for a Bill and CR segment. A fantasy draft between Bill and CR of heist movie crew members to build your own crew for a heist. Five round draft, snake order, one crew leader, best friend Road Dogg, two role players, fifth pick is the first to die.

• 56:24Speaker 03

  Did you prep this?

• 56:25Bill Simmons?

Well, we decided we were, instead of doing a draft-

• 56:28Chris Ryan?

  We want to challenge ourselves.

• 56:29Bill Simmons?

Yeah, we're going to try to come up with a heist crew together. So the ringleader has to be Neil McCauley, right?

• 56:35Speaker 03

  He's all time number one.

• 56:36Chris Ryan?

Are we just doing Michael Mann movies or is this from any film?

• 56:39Bill Simmons?

I think we do anything. I think we do everything.

• 56:40Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 56:41Speaker 03

McCauley's number one. He's the signal caller. Okay.

• 56:43Chris Ryan?

Which is funny because he honestly does not live through his heist ultimately.

• 56:47Speaker 03

  Uh huh.

• 56:48Chris Ryan?

You know, so it's like, he is 0-1 as far as the movies go.

• 56:52Bill Simmons?

Is there a Doug McCraig case?

• 56:54Chris Ryan?

Uh, who would you rather take orders from?

• 56:57Bill Simmons?

  Neil McCauley.

• 56:58Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, me too.

• 56:58Bill Simmons?

I feel like he knows his shit. I think you need somebody who's less about the violence and more about the smarts.

• 57:04Chris Ryan?

Let's make a rule that you can only draft one guy from a movie.

• 57:07Bill Simmons?

Or all the guys from one movie.

• 57:10Chris Ryan?

Then who's the fucking size for?

• 57:12Bill Simmons?

Well, who's? The number two guy, I think, is, has to be Jem, right?

• 57:16Chris Ryan?

Who's your road dog is definitely Jem.

• 57:18Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 57:18Chris Ryan?

  Yeah. Who's Kyle?

• 57:19Bill Simmons?

So now we have a movie with Neil McCauley.

• 57:21Chris Ryan?

I will make an argument. Road dog could be, uh, Rust from the Ocean's movies.

• 57:27Bill Simmons?

  Ooh.

• 57:28Chris Ryan?

  Really, really good road dog.

• 57:29Bill Simmons?

  It's a good one.

• 57:30Chris Ryan?

Yeah. Maybe even more fun than Jem. Jem gets you in a lot of fights. Jem gets you in a lot of trouble.

• 57:37Bill Simmons?

Um, what do we do about, like, can Merriman not be the lead guy? But also be in the crew anyway?

• 57:45Chris Ryan?

Well, in truth, not to spoil Denny Thieves, he's not really the lead guy in Denny Thieves. It just gets revealed at the end that that was always Donnie.

• 57:51Bill Simmons?

  Right, true.

• 57:52Chris Ryan?

So, yeah, Merriman could be third.

• 57:54Bill Simmons?

All right, so, so far we have Neil McCauley and Jem. You wanna throw Ocean's Eleven in there too?

• 58:00Chris Ryan?

Yeah, let's do, let's do Rust and Merriman for three and four.

• 58:06Bill Simmons?

I really need Sizmore in here from Heat.

• 58:09Chris Ryan?

  Kind of a wild card.

• 58:10Bill Simmons?

I just need him. What was his name in the movie? I'm blanking.

• 58:15Bill Simmons?

Chris, Sher- no, not Sherherlis, that wasn't, whatever his name was.

• 58:19Chris Ryan?

  It was, uh, Chorito.

• 58:20Bill Simmons?

  Chorito?

• 58:21Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 58:22Bill Simmons?

Who blew it all by just calling one guy slick when everybody had just been blown up, but somehow remembered that little detail.

• 58:28Chris Ryan?

Yeah. You're gonna get the phone book, do it anyway.

• 58:31Bill Simmons?

Cause he needs, he needs to be in this so he can have his, his one big scene.

• 58:36Chris Ryan?

  His blinking?

• 58:37Bill Simmons?

I need a one big scene for my number four guy. I need some size of them.

• 58:41Chris Ryan?

Okay, so you, let's lose Merriman for Chorito then.

• 58:46Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I don't know how Merriman and Chirito would interact. Feels like there'd be some alpha dog stuff with them.

• 58:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 58:51Bill Simmons?

Little Russell Wilson, Justin Fields. It's like, whose corner is this?

• 58:55Speaker 03

Russ is good because he'll keep everybody calm. He's kind of been a nonviolent crime.

• 58:58Chris Ryan?

All he's doing is eating nachos in the back and kind of hanging out, looking good.

• 59:01Bill Simmons?

Do we need, is there a wisecracking guy for like the fourth spot?

• 59:06Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I was thinking maybe Buscemi from Reservoir Dogs.

• 59:10Bill Simmons?

  Oh, that's good.

• 59:11Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 59:12Speaker 03

  That is good.

• 59:13Chris Ryan?

Just to bring a little firecracker energy.

• 59:15Bill Simmons?

Yeah, because I think that's what some of these movies miss is that one funny, I was trying to make this case with Ben and Dave's, but somebody who's keeping it light. And then the driver is who?

• 59:25Chris Ryan?

  Gosling from Drive.

• 59:28Bill Simmons?

  That's pretty good.

• 59:29Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 59:31Speaker 03

Baby driver, Ansel Elgert. I'm gonna go Gosling.

• 59:34Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 59:35Bill Simmons?

Can we take cops and put them in the heist?

• 59:37Chris Ryan?

Sure. You want them to be on the wrong side of the law or you just want them chasing the thieves?

• 59:42Bill Simmons?

I don't know if you've seen this movie, but it's Miami Vice. It came out in 2006.

• 59:46Chris Ryan?

  I have.

• 59:47Bill Simmons?

I really like Jamie Foxx's performance in that movie and I feel like he could have been good guy or bad guy, but the way he plays it, I almost feel like he could have just been the driver, like the Haysberg character.

• 59:56Chris Ryan?

Yeah. Do we have any room for Gong Li, for Isabella, to be in here?

• 1:00:01Bill Simmons?

To be like the love interest of the, so who's like your number one heist love interest?

• 1:00:08Bill Simmons?

Gong Li is basically just saying over and over again that there wasn't enough time, time's luck.

• 1:00:12Chris Ryan?

  I gotta be honest, man.

• 1:00:13Bill Simmons?

  Lively?

• 1:00:13Chris Ryan?

  I gotta say lively.

• 1:00:15Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, now we're talking.

• 1:00:18Chris Ryan?

If I'm being completely real, it's lively.

• 1:00:20Bill Simmons?

Who's lively dating out of the crew we just?

• 1:00:21Chris Ryan?

Well, that's the fun part is that she, maybe she's like got something with one of the guys, but Neil's always loved her.

• 1:00:27Speaker 03

And she gets eyes on Russ.

• 1:00:29Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:29Speaker 03

  And it's over.

• 1:00:32Bill Simmons?

All right, we'll keep workshopping this. The important thing is that Neil has to-

• 1:00:36Chris Ryan?

Wait, did we pick a first guy to die?

• 1:00:38Bill Simmons?

Oh, that's a good one. Yeah, we got-

• 1:00:40Chris Ryan?

Belushi from Thief always had that, that energy, you know?

• 1:00:46Bill Simmons?

It's a big doofus. There's no way this guy's making it to the 50 minute mark of the movie.

• 1:00:51Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:52Bill Simmons?

Well, the guy in the town, the guy who gets his head shot off.

• 1:00:56Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:00:56Bill Simmons?

When he's driving, the tattoo guy, but he lasted, I guess, till the end.

• 1:01:01Bill Simmons?

Theme months from Josh Brill. Comeback month. Much needed hits that brought a star back in the conversation, like The Wrestler, The Nightingale Professor. Underrated month. The Other Guys, Great White Hype, Outside Providence, Pop Star. Comedy classics, that's easy. In honor of SNL's 50th. Maybe do something for that, that might be on the agenda. And then Oscar movies, I thought was interesting.

• 1:01:26Chris Ryan?

  Yeah. Best pictures.

• 1:01:28Speaker 03

  Best picture winners?

• 1:01:29Chris Ryan?

  Best picture winner month?

• 1:01:30Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:30Chris Ryan?

Or best picture, yeah, best picture winner.

• 1:01:31Bill Simmons?

Cause what else are we doing, like Network or One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, films like that?

• 1:01:35Chris Ryan?

I would do Network whenever, but yeah.

• 1:01:37Bill Simmons?

Terms of Endearment, did that win?

• 1:01:38Chris Ryan?

  Out of Africa.

• 1:01:41Bill Simmons?

New category from Eric Ritvo. This is great. This is going right in. The Don Dawson, Sasha Jenkins Award from Dazed and Confused for the actor in the film that you cannot believe didn't become a bigger star.

• 1:01:54Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:55Bill Simmons?

So you would have Dana Willard Nicholson.

• 1:01:57Chris Ryan?

  From Fletch?

• 1:01:58Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Be your number one. Mine would be Lisa Elbecker.

• 1:02:01Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:02Speaker 03

  Wow, that's a good one.

• 1:02:03Bill Simmons?

But I like, I like naming a category after Don Dawson. It could also be the, uh, who's the guy in Swingers who we never saw again?

• 1:02:10Speaker 03

  Oh yeah, the third guy.

• 1:02:12Bill Simmons?

  Sue.

• 1:02:13Chris Ryan?

Oh yeah, not Ron Livingston, but the other guy?

• 1:02:15Bill Simmons?

  Patrick Van Horn is Sue.

• 1:02:16Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:16Bill Simmons?

And he was just never in another movie? It's like, what happened to that guy? I do like capturing, and it feels like a cousin of the that guy, like, why weren't you more of a thing?

• 1:02:24Chris Ryan?

Yeah, it's, Linklater movies are really good for that.

• 1:02:26Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:27Chris Ryan?

Cause he's so good at casting, but then those people are not always like, super professional.

• 1:02:31Bill Simmons?

I think we add that to the hodgepodge.

• 1:02:32Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:33Bill Simmons?

Where somebody could agree to do that. Uh, a plea from Felix K. It's come to this. I'm a 50 year old man emailing a podcast to request a movie that should have been done a long time ago. Sorry. Scarface, what am I missing? Seems like a no brainer.

• 1:02:48Chris Ryan?

  This is not my fault.

• 1:02:51Chris Ryan?

You can say Hunter Rockover is my fault.

• 1:02:52Bill Simmons?

There's some that are just, you know, on ice in the, in the refrigerator waiting to be done. It's, we're doing Scarface at some point.

• 1:03:00Chris Ryan?

Any movies that we've done, say in 2024, that you were like, I wish we had done that earlier?

• 1:03:06Bill Simmons?

To open the door for doing it yet again?

• 1:03:08Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:09Bill Simmons?

  Later?

• 1:03:11Bill Simmons?

We probably should have done pulp earlier.

• 1:03:14Chris Ryan?

You let it build up in your head.

• 1:03:15Speaker 03

I also think there are so many movies that you guys did in like 2017, 18 that were so good. You came out so hot for the first 15, 20 movies. There was a banger after banger after banger. But a lot of those, you didn't have the categories for those. You could bring all those back.

• 1:03:29Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Yeah, there's some good ones like Point Break and Speed and.

• 1:03:34Bill Simmons?

New category from Josh Ramshaw, the Kyle Bran Award for is this movie better as a Monocum Golan production? Really solid.

• 1:03:44Bill Simmons?

Probably not out of that category, but a great joke.

• 1:03:46Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:03:46Chris Ryan?

I would like to add that I would love to do the 80s action trailer voice for movies that would like, what would be the most inappropriate use of 80s action trailer voice? Sounds like.

• 1:03:59Bill Simmons?

  Like we're doing Philadelphia?

• 1:04:00Chris Ryan?

Yeah, like Remains of a Day. He's just a butler, but what if like.

• 1:04:05Speaker 03

  Manchester by the Sea?

• 1:04:06Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:07Bill Simmons?

  That's good.

• 1:04:07Chris Ryan?

He's lost everything, but he gained it all back.

• 1:04:11Bill Simmons?

Maybe that should be added to the director's commentary of the sports announcers. Like should 80 action's voice be there? From Eric Hoover.

• 1:04:20Bill Simmons?

This isn't a suggestion. It's more a fact, but I thought it was interesting. After listening to Friday Night Lights episode, I would love to submit a nominee to dethrone the undisclosed truck stop coin toss. He's a lifelong racing fan. He says the 1969 coin toss between Ogden Phipps, Claiborne Farms owner, horse racing royalty, and Penny Channery was the most important in sports history. And what happened was the 1969, I'll skim it through, but the 1969 breeding season, this horse called Chicada did not conceive Cicada Chicada.

• 1:04:58Chris Ryan?

  Cicada, yeah.

• 1:04:59Bill Simmons?

Cicada? Do you know this story?

• 1:05:01Chris Ryan?

No, I know that. I know Cicada's the insect.

• 1:05:08Bill Simmons?

Only one fall was due in the spring of 1970. The winner of the coin toss would receive one fall, the first choice in 69. The loser would get second choice in 69, the lone fall of 1970. Ogden Phipps wins the toss.

• 1:05:23Chris Ryan?

This is how we'll decide who gets to pick the movie the other people have to watch. We'll do a coin toss live on camera.

• 1:05:28Bill Simmons?

Ogden Phipps wins the toss, gets Something Royal, 1969. Chennery gets the second choice in 69 in the 1974 Secretariat.

• 1:05:42Bill Simmons?

And he says, imagine losing a coin toss and ending up with Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth in Secretariat. That's, that's gotta be the best coin toss. I always thought it was Neil Walker, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the 1969 NBA draft, but no. New category from Pat in Wisconsin. Best application to a high school lesson plan. And he says, for years, my colleagues, former colleagues and I have utilized movie clips, or entire movies into our instruction as social studies teachers. Examples: US history, There Will Be Blood, US oil boom. Argo, Iranian hostage crisis. Pulp Fiction, Jewels and the Robbers and the Diner is a metaphor for US and German tensions following the Zimmermann note. Is that true?

• 1:06:24Chris Ryan?

I don't know, but it just seems like this guy wanted to show Pulp Fiction to his class.

• 1:06:28Bill Simmons?

Crime and Justice, Catch Me If You Can, White Collar Crime. Psychology, Rain Man, What About Bob, Memento, Mean Girls, The Strawberry Dacre Scene. Philosophy, Groundhog Day. I don't think this works as a category, but I really appreciate the spirit behind it.

• 1:06:43Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:44Bill Simmons?

Using movies to connect with high school kids who don't want to be in your class and are probably on their phone.

• 1:06:48Chris Ryan?

That's right. I used to have a eighth grade history teacher who would show like movies from different historical eras than the ones that we were studying. And it was clear that he just needed a class off. He'd be like, we're doing the Colonial American Revolution. Let's watch Spartacus.

• 1:07:05Speaker 03

Yeah, throw on the rewatchables for the students, you know?

• 1:07:07Bill Simmons?

This is the best idea of all the ideas, and sadly, we probably won't be able to do it. It's a new category idea from Colin W. A few years ago, it was jokingly brought up to have a category where you call Rusillo and ask what he thinks of the film being discussed.

• 1:07:19Speaker 03

  Just live on air.

• 1:07:20Bill Simmons?

I feel like we, as listeners, have missed out on more than a few gem takes from RR, but this having been implemented in the podcast. This would be an incredible category. Does Rusillo like this movie? What's Rusillo's take? Calling Rusillo unprompted and unannounced. If he doesn't answer, he doesn't answer.

• 1:07:36Chris Ryan?

I don't know why we don't do this.

• 1:07:38Speaker 03

This is my favorite idea we've ever had.

• 1:07:40Chris Ryan?

  The best idea.

• 1:07:41Bill Simmons?

So we just put him on speaker and just call, and if he answers, and he answers, and be like, hey, Friday Night Lights, what are your thoughts?

• 1:07:46Chris Ryan?

Does Rusillo have the highest batting average on the rewatchables in terms of like appearances to the amount of like incredible movies?

• 1:07:53Bill Simmons?

We don't want to book him anymore.

• 1:07:54Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:07:54Bill Simmons?

  It's, it's.

• 1:07:55Speaker 03

His town vision quest Wolf of Wall Street, is that it?

• 1:07:58Bill Simmons?

  Deliverance.

• 1:07:59Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:59Bill Simmons?

Oh, Margot Call. I think he's done like five or six.

• 1:08:04Bill Simmons?

  That was his choice.

• 1:08:07Bill Simmons?

I like this Rusillo idea, though. We're gonna have to try.

• 1:08:09Speaker 03

Yeah, so good. We should try it right now. Let's pick a movie.

• 1:08:11Bill Simmons?

  Before sunrise later this month.

• 1:08:14Speaker 03

  Call, and he'll just.

• 1:08:15Bill Simmons?

We just call him. He's like, ah, Ethan Hawke, fuck, movie sucked.

• 1:08:20Bill Simmons?

  New category.

• 1:08:20Speaker 03

I thought Jesse could have done better than her, man.

• 1:08:24Bill Simmons?

I really like this next idea, too. New category idea from Thomas P.

• 1:08:29Bill Simmons?

Is this movie perfect? In that, does it accomplish its stated goal? For example, Dazed and Confused, attempts to capture the beginning of summer in 1976 in a small town. Can you imagine a better version including the soundtrack? Does the actor playing Mitch take it from perfect to almost perfect? Uh, the answer is yes. Other perfect movie candidates, Stand By Me, Devil Wears Prada, Die Hard. Not necessarily the best movie ever, but movies that perfectly achieve their goal.

• 1:08:56Chris Ryan?

Love this. I love this idea.

• 1:08:58Bill Simmons?

It's a great idea, and my wife.

• 1:09:01Speaker 03

It's a better way to rate movies.

• 1:09:02Bill Simmons?

Yeah, my wife had Devil Wears Prada on, which we've watched a bunch of. It's one of the most rewatchable movies the last 20 years, I think. And I was watching, I was like, this is like.

• 1:09:13Speaker 03

  It's a 10 out of 10.

• 1:09:13Bill Simmons?

A no hitter of a movie for whatever it was trying to do. Yeah, it wouldn't change a single thing. The plot makes sense. Even Adrian Gournier as the boyfriend is hilarious because he's so bad.

• 1:09:22Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:23Bill Simmons?

So I like the idea of did this movie achieve its ceiling?

• 1:09:26Chris Ryan?

Movies that are like. B plus, B minus movies generally, but like for what it was doing.

• 1:09:34Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:35Chris Ryan?

You can't, you couldn't have improved it really.

• 1:09:36Speaker 03

No, like the Sandlot is a 10 out of 10. It was, it did exactly what it needed to do.

• 1:09:40Bill Simmons?

So do you think this is, where would we put this in the, in the episode?

• 1:09:45Chris Ryan?

I think you would do after.

• 1:09:46Bill Simmons?

You do it near the end, right? Yeah.

• 1:09:48Chris Ryan?

Yeah, who won the movie and is this movie perfect?

• 1:09:49Bill Simmons?

Who won the movie? Yeah. Yeah, I like that one. Top of the pot idea from Katie Mount. This is another good one. I would love it if you all added a food and drink recommendation to accompany the film we're supposed to be rewatching. My husband and I plan our weeks around rewatching, listening to your podcasts. That's nice. So it immensely helped my meal planning. I already have a steak on a paper plate planned for rewatching Den of Thieves. But still decided between a box of wine or champagne or beer to go with it.

• 1:10:17Chris Ryan?

  Oh man, I would go.

• 1:10:18Bill Simmons?

  That's an interesting one.

• 1:10:19Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:20Bill Simmons?

So what's the, what's heat, we gotta go back to heat. So what's the food and drink for heat?

• 1:10:26Chris Ryan?

The chicken? Cause remember he's like, I'm sorry if the chicken. Got overcooked.

• 1:10:31Bill Simmons?

  Overcooked.

• 1:10:33Chris Ryan?

So overcooked rotisserie chicken for heat.

• 1:10:35Speaker 03

So were you just picking an item from the movie or is it whatever you feel like is the perfect?

• 1:10:40Bill Simmons?

I took it as like the, the mood for the movie.

• 1:10:42Chris Ryan?

Oh, so yeah, cause that's interesting. Cause say for, for like, for instance, for Blair Witch. You would do basically like gas station snack banquet, like.

• 1:10:51Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 1:10:51Chris Ryan?

Jerky, Doritos, you know, Dr. Pepper. Everything that they get out of the gas stations, which you would eat during that, you'd feel like shit afterwards though.

• 1:11:01Bill Simmons?

I think the problem with this category, which I really liked is it's really up to the person.

• 1:11:04Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:05Bill Simmons?

They know what the movie is. Take it from there.

• 1:11:08Chris Ryan?

60% of them are also, should, should I be smoking during this?

• 1:11:14Bill Simmons?

This, this never got, quite got here, but Luke B thought we should do a Brad Stevens award for the best basketball lineup you could possibly make for the movie.

• 1:11:22Chris Ryan?

  Oh, that's fun. Yeah.

• 1:11:23Bill Simmons?

Guys, you slot five characters into roles, positions in a starting lineup. He said, for instance, Neil's crew from Heat, Neil's the point guard, he's a Chris Paul type. Chris is the gunslinging shooting guard. Trey has the bruising meta world piece, Corey Maggette type. And Sizmore is a Horace Grant, Serge Ibaka, David West, traditional Swiss Army knife power forward.

• 1:11:44Chris Ryan?

I like that this dude stopped watching basketball in 2011.

• 1:11:49Chris Ryan?

You know, just like a vodka and David West.

• 1:11:51Bill Simmons?

  He's like a Luol Deng.

• 1:11:52Chris Ryan?

  Trending topics today.

• 1:11:54Speaker 03

  Throw Corey Maggetty in there?

• 1:11:56Bill Simmons?

It, this is a good one for a movie, an ensemble movie.

• 1:11:59Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:12:00Bill Simmons?

To put together a basketball team. So like Friday Night Lights, we just did.

• 1:12:04Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:06Bill Simmons?

So Riggins was what? Riggins is like a, he's like a banger.

• 1:12:10Chris Ryan?

Yeah, he's like a undersized four.

• 1:12:13Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Saracens like under, like a five nine point guard. He's like a Jose Alvarado.

• 1:12:18Speaker 03

  Booby Miles shooting guard?

• 1:12:19Bill Simmons?

Booby Miles is like the Kobe. He goes down. Category tweak from John Wolfe.

• 1:12:26Bill Simmons?

This is great. A cousin of the Malley Rubin. Did this movie need a better sex scene? I thought of this during the redent of thieves pod. Didn't we need a scene where Pablo, fifty and crew play a pickup basketball game against Butler and the sheriffs? Then he asked, didn't shot caller need a better sports scene? We get no prison ball? Couldn't good fellows have fitted in a softball scene like they're playing for the Delhi team? Basically, how would you have shoehorned a sports movie, a sports scene into this movie for no reason? The best version of this is American history X, when we have the Helter Skelter pickup basketball game.

• 1:13:02Chris Ryan?

I was watching Maverick again the other day and the football scene with two footballs is just like, in the movie theater, you're like, what are they doing? Even though it's basically the volleyball scene for the first one?

• 1:13:11Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:11Chris Ryan?

  It's so awesome.

• 1:13:12Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:13Chris Ryan?

It's like, it's just such a chill hangout.

• 1:13:15Bill Simmons?

I think we keep this in our back pocket.

• 1:13:17Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:17Speaker 03

I, I think you could work this into every movie. How can we shoehorn a sports scene into this? And you guys have to come up with one. I think it's great.

• 1:13:24Bill Simmons?

  So before sunrise?

• 1:13:27Chris Ryan?

  Little five side soccer.

• 1:13:29Bill Simmons?

Yeah, he's, he all of a sudden is.

• 1:13:31Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, looking at these movies, like body double. What, what, is he like going to play racquetball one day? You gotta do something.

• 1:13:37Bill Simmons?

That's a good one. Instead of acting class.

• 1:13:41Bill Simmons?

  Racquetball, it's claustrophobic.

• 1:13:44Speaker 03

It's too much, it's too tight in there.

• 1:13:45Bill Simmons?

I like, we should test drive that one. That's a good idea.

• 1:13:48Speaker 03

This would work, I think. What are they playing in hereditary?

• 1:13:53Bill Simmons?

Oh man, what would they be in hereditary?

• 1:13:55Speaker 03

And you have to kind of make it work.

• 1:13:56Bill Simmons?

That's a school football game where they go and something scary happens.

• 1:14:00Chris Ryan?

But I would just love it if Toni Collette was just like, well, why don't we settle this out on the court? Just like dunking on her son.

• 1:14:06Bill Simmons?

Well, great Santini had all those great basketball scenes in that. You've never seen that one.

• 1:14:15Bill Simmons?

• 1:15:33Bill Simmons?

A slew of category suggestions from Yale Reardon. These are really good. He wants us to add the Jason Tatum, he's only 19 breakout star award.

• 1:15:44Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:45Bill Simmons?

Someone who obviously jumps off the screen. That doesn't happen enough. The Nick Saban Offensive Coordinator Referral Award, an open opportunity to give out references of comparable films. If you enjoyed this movie, I recommend you also watch this.

• 1:15:57Chris Ryan?

We could just call that recommended if you like.

• 1:16:00Bill Simmons?

  Well, we could.

• 1:16:00Chris Ryan?

Double feature similar to that, right?

• 1:16:02Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Yeah, but maybe, is that better than double feature? If you like this movie, try this. Or does Tubi do that, the greedy overlords?

• 1:16:13Chris Ryan?

  Evil to be.

• 1:16:14Speaker 03

It's the next recommendation on the algorithm award.

• 1:16:17Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, next algorithmic recommendation.

• 1:16:19Bill Simmons?

And then he says he wants us to change the title of the Kid Cudi Pursuit of Happiness. Needle drop. He said, "The Ringer dramatically overestimates the importance of Project X and culture today."

• 1:16:28Speaker 03

  Disagree, we underestimate it.

• 1:16:30Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I disagree too. He said, "He offered the Johnny Depp's Black Betty Airport Walk in Blow."

• 1:16:36Chris Ryan?

That's really funny that you think Black Betty in Blow is bigger than the Project X one.

• 1:16:42Bill Simmons?

He did offer the Billy Batts Atlantis Beatdown in Goodfellas.

• 1:16:45Chris Ryan?

  That's fucking incredible.

• 1:16:47Bill Simmons?

But we're not getting rid of Kid Cudi. New category from James Winston.

• 1:16:50Chris Ryan?

Thought this was Jameis Winston for a second.

• 1:16:52Bill Simmons?

The "I used to fuck guys like you in prison" award for the wildest, oddest, most fucked up line of dialogue in the movie.

• 1:17:01Chris Ryan?

Keep it, I'll keep it in mind. Yeah.

• 1:17:04Bill Simmons?

Can you see some of these? I didn't think I sent some of these to you.

• 1:17:07Chris Ryan?

  I can see them.

• 1:17:08Bill Simmons?

  How do you see them?

• 1:17:09Chris Ryan?

You sent the whole thing to me.

• 1:17:10Bill Simmons?

Oh, I did? I didn't mean to. I only meant to send you like seven.

• 1:17:13Chris Ryan?

Yeah. No, you sent them all to me.

• 1:17:15Bill Simmons?

Oh shit, I really fucked up. I meant to only send you seven.

• 1:17:18Chris Ryan?

Well, I'm not like following along. I have no idea where you're going with these.

• 1:17:22Bill Simmons?

New category from Daniel in Mexico.

• 1:17:26Bill Simmons?

How about a category called "Would this movie work in another genre? Example, Tropic Thunder is a survival drama. Rosemary's Baby is a comedy, or Mrs. Doubtfire is a horror thriller film." So they did that with The Shining with the family dramedy.

• 1:17:39Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:39Bill Simmons?

  The Torrance's.

• 1:17:40Speaker 03

I like when they recut trailers.

• 1:17:42Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:42Chris Ryan?

I often think about how this movie would be different if Curb Your Enthusiasm music was playing.

• 1:17:48Speaker 03

There's a great one, Mrs. Doubtfire as a horror film on YouTube.

• 1:17:51Chris Ryan?

  Oh, is there?

• 1:17:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:17:52Chris Ryan?

  That's good.

• 1:17:52Speaker 03

  Trailer.

• 1:17:55Bill Simmons?

A burning question from Robert G. This is good. You've given the opportunity to have either Cruise or Hanks on for rewatchables as your co-host. You could do a movie that Ben in, a movie the others been in, or a movie of your choice. Who's a better co-host? What movie are you doing? Is the play for them, one of them to come on a movie you haven't done yet? That's theirs, like Cruise for All the Right Moves, or Hanks for Turner and Hooch? Or is it more interesting to talk about a movie the other ones in?

• 1:18:24Bill Simmons?

Personally, I think a re-cruising with Cruise is the only choice.

• 1:18:31Speaker 03

So this is a good question. As a co-host, Cruiser Hanks.

• 1:18:36Bill Simmons?

So it's almost like a subcategory for Cruiser Hanks.

• 1:18:39Chris Ryan?

I, I think that Hanks would be able to kinda go in different places and riff with you and talk about.

• 1:18:45Bill Simmons?

I think Hank, let's be honest, Hank is a better co-host.

• 1:18:47Chris Ryan?

Yeah, but Cruz tells incredible stories about the production of the films that he's been in.

• 1:18:52Speaker 03

Even if he hasn't been in it. Just the, the entertainment factor is so much higher if Tom Cruise is sitting next to you.

• 1:18:57Chris Ryan?

Like Cruz doing Eyes Wide Shut would be the, the greatest podcast in the history of the world.

• 1:19:01Bill Simmons?

Hanks is better as a podcaster. Like, he could hang in with all of these.

• 1:19:05Chris Ryan?

Do we know that Cruz can't hang in as a podcaster?

• 1:19:08Bill Simmons?

Cruz, from a, I can't believe this is happening standpoint, is better. The upside of Cruz is higher. If we're doing like Before Sunrise with Cruz and he just fucking goes on a tangent about when he filmed Mission Impossible 5 in France.

• 1:19:23Chris Ryan?

Yeah, he's like, I've been to Vienna, you may have remembered it from Mission Impossible 1.

• 1:19:26Bill Simmons?

He's just acting weird and doing Cruz stuff.

• 1:19:29Speaker 03

It's Cruz. It's not even close. Yeah.

• 1:19:32Bill Simmons?

I would feel safer with Hanks.

• 1:19:34Speaker 03

But what does that even mean? That the pod won't be a disaster?

• 1:19:36Bill Simmons?

No, I just feel like it would be a safer bet to be a good pod. There's a Cruz version of the pod.

• 1:19:41Chris Ryan?

Yeah, like, there's a Cruz thing where you make too many cigarette jokes and he's like, cigarettes are poison. You know, like, he gets really mad at you.

• 1:19:49Bill Simmons?

We also had, Robert G. also said, you need to get burnt on off or on for Sicario, the Account Rewatchables co-host along with C.R. If C.R. could muster up the courage to do Wayne Jenkins with burnt on the pod, keep it, otherwise you gotta retire it. I disagree. From James McGowan, I'm slightly older than you. That's my line. But I'm sure you remember the CBS late movie, if The Outlaw, Josie Wales or Kelly's Heroes was playing, I was staying up. You could do an old school broadcast TV rewatchables month. I also love the Hollywood Nights. I think that would be tough.

• 1:20:24Chris Ryan?

So what would be some examples of movies from that era?

• 1:20:26Bill Simmons?

  It's all the westerns.

• 1:20:28Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:20:28Bill Simmons?

Um, it's Towering Inferno, movies like that.

• 1:20:31Chris Ryan?

  Poseidon Adventure?

• 1:20:32Bill Simmons?

Yeah, Poseidon Adventure. I don't know, that, those movies are pretty tough to watch now.

• 1:20:36Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:37Bill Simmons?

I tried to watch Poseidon Adventure, it's rough.

• 1:20:39Chris Ryan?

  Hackman's in that, right?

• 1:20:40Bill Simmons?

Yeah, so there's a lot of good people and it's like, ah, this should be good. And 20 minutes in, you're like.

• 1:20:45Bill Simmons?

They can't get Shelly Winters up on a cliff.

• 1:20:47Speaker 03

Oh, yeah, I forgot about that.

• 1:20:49Bill Simmons?

They still can't get her. Really rough. A tweak from Mark McGowan, big fan of the pod, he says, on the Red Dead of Thieves show this week, you throw out drinking milk from the carton for Apex Mountain. I wanted to submit the scene from Terminator 2 when the T1000 kills John's foster dad through the milk carton while he's drinking from it. Who knew the T1000 cared so much about proper hygiene and etiquette? What did we say the best one? It was, we said Anchorman, right? How did it beat Anchorman for milk, drinking milk out of the?

• 1:21:20Chris Ryan?

  We haven't done Anchorman yet.

• 1:21:21Bill Simmons?

  We haven't.

• 1:21:22Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 1:21:22Bill Simmons?

  It's on the list.

• 1:21:24Speaker 03

  Was that oh, oh, four?

• 1:21:26Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:21:26Bill Simmons?

Missed the anniversary. Category section from Mark C. Where would you cast Philip Seymour Hoffman?

• 1:21:32Chris Ryan?

  This is a great one.

• 1:21:35Chris Ryan?

Honestly, no movie that he couldn't improve marginally, so.

• 1:21:39Bill Simmons?

So maybe every movie, we just try to figure out what part he would have played?

• 1:21:42Chris Ryan?

Yeah, like Godfather 3, could he have been a cardinal? Why not?

• 1:21:46Bill Simmons?

  I really like this one.

• 1:21:48Speaker 03

  That's good.

• 1:21:48Bill Simmons?

So maybe it's right after Cruiser Hanks?

• 1:21:50Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:51Bill Simmons?

Yeah, let's, we'll test drive it.

• 1:21:53Chris Ryan?

  Philip Seymour Hoffman?

• 1:21:53Bill Simmons?

Yeah, we'll test drive it. Be tough to do with Before Sunrise. New category from Kevin Palmer, the sideways, I'm not drinking any fucking Merlot award for life imitating art presented when something ridiculous in the movie unexpectedly gains a cult following and becomes a bona fide thing. Examples, sideways, when Miles's Merlot tantrum, arguably torpedoed Merlot sales for years and counting, which we talked about in the pod. Office space, the rise of the red swing line stapler, Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges turning into the dude in real life. Rounders, the poker boom and Empire Records Rex Manning Day, another Empire Records. There's not enough times this happens, but I like the spirit behind it. My favorite part is Jeff Bridges turning into the dude, which I think actually happened.

• 1:22:38Chris Ryan?

Yeah, you could do what should have been trending out of this movie? Like what trend should this movie have started?

• 1:22:43Bill Simmons?

  Hmm, right.

• 1:22:45Chris Ryan?

You know, should this, should, should Goodfellas had started a Leila revival or something? You know what I mean?

• 1:22:50Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:50Speaker 03

Did, did people, did Jaws like significantly affect people going into the ocean?

• 1:22:54Bill Simmons?

Yes. I was terrified of the ocean.

• 1:22:56Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, it's affected Bill.

• 1:22:57Bill Simmons?

It really did. I remember walking by the ocean the next summer and being like. Being afraid to go in. Category tweak from Mike Roylance. This is great. He says he thinks he's listened to every rewatchables episode. He wants to lose evil laughing Ramon Raymond.

• 1:23:13Speaker 03

  People hate Ramon Raymond.

• 1:23:14Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, we're good.

• 1:23:14Chris Ryan?

I saw Andy Garcia out the other night.

• 1:23:16Speaker 03

  No way.

• 1:23:17Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:17Bill Simmons?

He's like, are you the fucking asshole who does the rewatchables? He wants us to replace Ramon Raymond with, uh, Wilford Brimley from The Firm. He says it's the hardest he's ever laughed, listening to a pod.

• 1:23:29Speaker 03

  What did she find, bitch?

• 1:23:32Bill Simmons?

I, if we had Daniel Plainview and, and-

• 1:23:34Chris Ryan?

  Wilford Brimley?

• 1:23:35Bill Simmons?

For 2025, we're in pretty good shape.

• 1:23:38Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, that's good.

• 1:23:38Speaker 03

Who do we drop? Ramon Raymond and? Have we ever done Philip Baker Hall?

• 1:23:43Bill Simmons?

  Nah, we can drop him.

• 1:23:44Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:23:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:23:45Bill Simmons?

It's always funny to say his words last and Philip Baker Hall. Um, what was Brimley's character in The Firm? Did he have a name?

• 1:23:53Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, it did.

• 1:23:54Bill Simmons?

Tell you what it brings, bitch. Heartache.

• 1:23:59Bill Simmons?

  Random question from Row F.

• 1:24:00Speaker 03

  William Devisher was his name.

• 1:24:02Bill Simmons?

Do you think movie theaters should invest more resources in auditoriums and anniversary movies and also feature more old school rewatchable movies? What do you think, Craig? You're a younger guy who likes to go out and do stuff.

• 1:24:12Speaker 03

  I think-

• 1:24:13Bill Simmons?

Do you like go on Alamo Drafthouse?

• 1:24:14Speaker 03

I've actually never been to an Alamo Drafthouse. They're opening one on the west side, I heard. Um, yeah, we just saw, I mean, they put Interstellar out last month and it was huge and among like everybody I know, people were thrilled to go back and see it.

• 1:24:26Bill Simmons?

But is that an LA thing or is that an around the country thing?

• 1:24:29Chris Ryan?

I think it did, uh, really well. Like, wasn't it like in the top 10 box office or whatever?

• 1:24:33Bill Simmons?

  Is that true?

• 1:24:34Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:34Speaker 03

  I think there is-

• 1:24:35Chris Ryan?

They put it out on IMAX.

• 1:24:35Speaker 03

I think there is a thirst for that, for people to go re-experience what something could have felt like 15 years ago when it came out.

• 1:24:41Bill Simmons?

Cause I saw Seven is on-

• 1:24:42Chris Ryan?

  Is on IMAX.

• 1:24:43Bill Simmons?

IMAX right now. And I was like, oh.

• 1:24:45Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:45Speaker 03

Cause it's something you can't recreate. I mean, I don't know about really old movies, but movies like of the 2000s that kids who are 20 years old now wish they could have seen, I think that works.

• 1:24:54Chris Ryan?

  I think it's a thing.

• 1:24:55Bill Simmons?

Chris had a good point about Seven.

• 1:24:59Bill Simmons?

Probably not a theater you want to be in with the other people there. It's just you and 17 guys by themselves.

• 1:25:08Speaker 03

That's a good category. What's like the worst movie audience you'd want to be with?

• 1:25:11Chris Ryan?

  Exactly.

• 1:25:12Bill Simmons?

I told you, I think I told this story in the rewatchables when I saw Henry Portrait of a Serial Coeur by myself in Boston at the BU Theater.

• 1:25:20Chris Ryan?

Was there anybody else at the theater?

• 1:25:21Bill Simmons?

There was like eight other guys and we were all kind of like monitoring each other. We're like, what are you? What are you up to? Everyone like separated perfectly by six seats, kind of watching.

• 1:25:32Speaker 03

Worst movie to see with your parents or your in-laws? That's another good one.

• 1:25:36Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:25:36Speaker 03

One night we were like, in the last week, should we watch Enora? And I was like, no.

• 1:25:43Bill Simmons?

Enora's in the top, that'd be way up there.

• 1:25:45Speaker 03

We skip the first hour and then we can come in.

• 1:25:47Chris Ryan?

The first shot of Enora, you're like, alright, I'm out.

• 1:25:49Bill Simmons?

Don't want to watch this with my mom. I would say number one would be Monsters Ball.

• 1:25:53Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:25:54Bill Simmons?

Make me feel good, make me know.

• 1:25:58Speaker 03

  Don't open your eyes, Mary.

• 1:26:03Bill Simmons?

So, this one caught my attention. Category idea from Michael Morrison. Would this movie be better if it was directed by Spielberg or Scorsese?

• 1:26:10Speaker 03

  Ooh.

• 1:26:12Bill Simmons?

Would that be follow Cruise and Hanks?

• 1:26:14Chris Ryan?

  That's good. I like that.

• 1:26:16Bill Simmons?

The only problem I had with it is, are there arguments? I feel like each one would be naturally easy to figure out.

• 1:26:21Chris Ryan?

They've circled each other and enough projects over the course of their career. They've had like slight overlap here and there. Schindler's was a big one, right? Wasn't that the big one that Scorsese was gonna direct and Spielberg took over?

• 1:26:33Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:34Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 1:26:34Speaker 03

But like any crime, action-y thing will go to Scorsese, right?

• 1:26:38Chris Ryan?

I don't know. I mean, you could make the argument that it would be fascinating to see Spielberg try something like that.

• 1:26:43Bill Simmons?

Well, let's test drive it with the last couple we've done.

• 1:26:46Speaker 03

  Home Alone 2.

• 1:26:47Bill Simmons?

Den of Thieves, Spielberg or Scorsese?

• 1:26:51Speaker 03

  I mean.

• 1:26:52Bill Simmons?

  Probably Scorsese.

• 1:26:53Speaker 03

  Need Jerk, it's Scorsese.

• 1:26:54Bill Simmons?

Friday Night Lights, Spielberg or Scorsese?

• 1:26:56Speaker 03

  Spielberg.

• 1:26:57Bill Simmons?

  Yeah. Home Alone 2.

• 1:26:59Speaker 03

  Spielberg.

• 1:27:00Bill Simmons?

  The Gambler.

• 1:27:01Chris Ryan?

Well, I don't know. Scorsese really has a feel for New York.

• 1:27:06Bill Simmons?

  The Gambler?

• 1:27:08Chris Ryan?

  Scorsese.

• 1:27:09Bill Simmons?

  Disclosure? Definitely not Spielberg.

• 1:27:11Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 1:27:12Bill Simmons?

  Running scared.

• 1:27:14Chris Ryan?

  Scorsese.

• 1:27:15Bill Simmons?

  Yeah. The Replacements?

• 1:27:20Bill Simmons?

Both of them say no. I think. What about Meet the Parents?

• 1:27:25Chris Ryan?

Probably, I could see that being Scorsese, just because he's worked with De Niro so much.

• 1:27:30Bill Simmons?

  Body Double?

• 1:27:32Chris Ryan?

  Spielberg.

• 1:27:33Speaker 03

  Oh, interesting.

• 1:27:34Chris Ryan?

Yeah, because he's a big Hitchcock guy, too.

• 1:27:36Speaker 03

  Yeah, that's true.

• 1:27:38Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I think Spielberg. Last one, Halloween Four. What do you think? Probably Scorsese.

• 1:27:44Chris Ryan?

  That was the last.

• 1:27:49Bill Simmons?

  That was great.

• 1:27:49Chris Ryan?

  That was awesome.

• 1:27:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:27:51Bill Simmons?

Category ideas from Johnny O. The Bill Simmons Hardcore Award for most inappropriate Google search on a work computer inspired by the film. Really doesn't happen that often, but it's, I like having a word.

• 1:28:01Chris Ryan?

It happens during the pod and it'll be like, don't Google that, don't Google that.

• 1:28:05Bill Simmons?

Yeah. The Innocent Bystander Award for the background character whose life is forever changed due to the actions of the movie, but of course, it's never acknowledged in the film. He says, "The girl on the Girl Scouts team in Dodgeball who tests positive for PDs gets her team disqualified."

• 1:28:20Speaker 03

  Beaver tranquilizer.

• 1:28:22Bill Simmons?

What happens to her down the road. That's pretty funny. And then, uh, last idea, the memorabilia from this movie you'd want the least.

• 1:28:30Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, that's really good.

• 1:28:31Bill Simmons?

I think we, maybe we add that. It's like memorabilia you'd want the most or the least and you get either choice. Right?

• 1:28:37Speaker 03

Yeah. Like Demi Moore's substance body at the end of the film.

• 1:28:41Bill Simmons?

  Right, yeah.

• 1:28:42Chris Ryan?

  Absolutely.

• 1:28:43Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Question from Steven M. Why would you guys do a rewatch of on Rocky III and Rocky IV before the Oscar winning Rocky I? It makes no sense.

• 1:28:53Speaker 03

  Bill would just say that.

• 1:28:54Chris Ryan?

Why did you gesture at Craig?

• 1:28:56Bill Simmons?

  I don't know. I don't know what Craig's doing. I don't know what he's doing over there.

• 1:29:01Bill Simmons?

I, we did, we did Rocky IV, we did the first.

• 1:29:06Chris Ryan?

I don't think I've done a Rocky with you. Yeah.

• 1:29:08Bill Simmons?

Been saving you for Rocky I.

• 1:29:09Chris Ryan?

  Thank you.

• 1:29:11Bill Simmons?

I did Rocky III with Sal and Gus. Because, my buddy Gus, because we had watched Rocky III together so many times.

• 1:29:17Chris Ryan?

And did you do IV with Kyle?

• 1:29:18Bill Simmons?

Rocky IV was Kyle. I think that was during COVID.

• 1:29:23Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, maybe.

• 1:29:23Bill Simmons?

It was Zoom era. It was a Zoom pod.

• 1:29:25Chris Ryan?

  It was.

• 1:29:26Bill Simmons?

And I just did it in the order of Rocky movies that I like. My favorite is three.

• 1:29:31Chris Ryan?

  Really?

• 1:29:32Bill Simmons?

My second favorite is four. One's slow.

• 1:29:36Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:36Bill Simmons?

And features the controversial seduction scene.

• 1:29:39Chris Ryan?

  And then two.

• 1:29:40Bill Simmons?

Which really Rocky should have gone to jail for 10 years. It's really rough to watch. No intimacy coordinator in that one either. Yeah, Rocky's, Rocky made some mistakes. But Rocky one, we probably do one and then maybe we do Rocky two, but it's just the last 25 minutes. From her waking up from the coma. Maybe some mini rewatchables. First hour and a half of that movie, shoot that in the sun.

• 1:30:06Bill Simmons?

Oh, movie suggestion from Elijah. Big fan of the rewatchables. You've already done Alien. I'd love to hear you guys discuss Aliens.

• 1:30:13Chris Ryan?

  Me too, Elijah.

• 1:30:14Bill Simmons?

It's one of the best sci fi action films ever. One of the better sequels. It's immensely rewatchable.

• 1:30:19Chris Ryan?

I just rewatched Alien last week. I have never seen Aliens.

• 1:30:23Bill Simmons?

Sierra, any thoughts on Aliens? Do you like that movie? Oh, you do?

• 1:30:26Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:26Bill Simmons?

  Had no idea.

• 1:30:27Chris Ryan?

  Are you out on Aliens?

• 1:30:29Bill Simmons?

No, I really like. We've been saving it. It's a classic.

• 1:30:31Chris Ryan?

And just the nude conversation alone would just be incredible.

• 1:30:35Bill Simmons?

I saw Aliens on a date.

• 1:30:37Chris Ryan?

  Did you?

• 1:30:37Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:38Chris Ryan?

  It's a long movie for a date.

• 1:30:39Bill Simmons?

Nothing happened after, I'll tell you how much.

• 1:30:41Chris Ryan?

  Not the future sports gal.

• 1:30:44Bill Simmons?

  Nothing.

• 1:30:48Bill Simmons?

A complete from Scott Murphy. I really hate that these pods are so long, but damn it, there should be a fact checking category, particularly with Bill quoting other movies. For years, he's been saying cross the beams instead of cross the streams, Ghostbuster. But he managed to equal that during the Longest Yard pod. When the Anacot Steel is brought up and he goes to quote Wall Street, he says, Blue Oyster loves Anacot Steel. No, no, no, it's Blue Horseshoe. Blue Oyster is the bar in the Police Academy series. I know he's old and his brain is becoming mush, but damn, either get it right or stop quoting other films.

• 1:31:18Chris Ryan?

I disagree. That gives the show its flavor. It's so fun. Yeah. You need that. It's also like, it's always that this pregnant pause where it's like, should we correct? We all look at each other. It's hard to host. I agree with you. I know. Yeah.

• 1:31:31Bill Simmons?

  Plus the vaccine.

• 1:31:32Speaker 03

  Yeah, right, right.

• 1:31:33Bill Simmons?

  Pre-vaccine.

• 1:31:34Speaker 03

The polio vaccine, is that what you're talking about?

• 1:31:35Bill Simmons?

  Pre-vaccine.

• 1:31:36Speaker 03

Half the time you guys bring up a character's name from a movie, I have no idea what you're talking about.

• 1:31:40Bill Simmons?

  I don't mind having-

• 1:31:40Speaker 03

I can't believe how good you are remembering characters' names.

• 1:31:43Bill Simmons?

I'm, I'm fine with fucking up occasionally. I fucked up in the, uh, Meet the Parents with Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, for like five solid minutes.

• 1:31:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:31:52Chris Ryan?

And you wanted to be corrected earlier on that one?

• 1:31:54Bill Simmons?

  No, Kyle eventually-

• 1:31:55Speaker 03

During a break, I told you.

• 1:31:56Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:57Speaker 03

  An ad break.

• 1:31:57Bill Simmons?

And Kyle was nice enough not to correct me.

• 1:32:00Chris Ryan?

Do you then say, "I can't believe I've been saying that wrong," or do you just push through?

• 1:32:03Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, I acknowledge that.

• 1:32:04Speaker 03

  Yeah, you acknowledge that.

• 1:32:04Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:05Speaker 03

But would you rather somebody correct you-

• 1:32:06Bill Simmons?

Which Wilson was it? Was it Luke or Owen?

• 1:32:08Speaker 03

Owen was in the movie you were saying Luke.

• 1:32:10Bill Simmons?

Yeah, see, I still can't get it right.

• 1:32:11Chris Ryan?

Cause I'm, like, there's a category named after him.

• 1:32:13Speaker 03

Would you rather somebody correct you after the first mistake, or kinda let it sit and tell you during-

• 1:32:17Bill Simmons?

  No, I think it's funnier if I don't know.

• 1:32:18Speaker 03

Okay. I was, look at that, you're doing it for the game.

• 1:32:21Bill Simmons?

New category idea for Jacob Murphy. Every now and then you guys talk about some great names in the rewatchables movies, like Mitch McDeer or Kelly Leek. These names should be given the category of the Brock Lanners and Chess Rockwell Award.

• 1:32:33Chris Ryan?

Yeah, this is up there, the Whip Whittaker Award from Flight. Yeah.

• 1:32:37Bill Simmons?

So, you could talk me into this just being a standard category.

• 1:32:40Speaker 03

  Best name?

• 1:32:41Chris Ryan?

  Best name, best character name?

• 1:32:43Bill Simmons?

Yeah, cause we always talk about, anyway, maybe it goes in what's aged the best, I don't know. New category from Daniel C., the Carl from Walking Dead Award for what character would survive the longest in the zombie apocalypse? Classic rewatchables examples include Gem in the Town, Buck and Boogie Nights, and Tubbs in Calderon's Revenge. This cannot be a category, but I like the-

• 1:33:01Speaker 03

  Hubs?

• 1:33:01Bill Simmons?

I like the spirit, I like they threw in Tubbs.

• 1:33:04Chris Ryan?

Yeah, he was really speaking our language.

• 1:33:06Bill Simmons?

New category from Zach Smith, suggesting the Barney Cousins Award for most inexplicable accent work. Recent winners, Carrie Elwes in Twister, Lindsey Kraus in Slapshot, Dennis Christopher in Breaking Away, any bad Boston accent.

• 1:33:18Chris Ryan?

What's wrong with Lindsey Kraus in Slapshot?

• 1:33:19Bill Simmons?

I don't know, he's just drive-by. But then he says Barney could also be a great addition to the Wayne Jenkins category.

• 1:33:27Bill Simmons?

I'm not against that one. Hello, Chris.

• 1:33:32Chris Ryan?

So we're gonna add in a character on a movie that's not, is not available to stream at all?

• 1:33:36Speaker 03

  Hello, Chris.

• 1:33:37Bill Simmons?

Drink the coffee, Chris. New category idea from Michael Connor. I would love to see a new category called, what is the perfect age to see this movie?

• 1:33:45Chris Ryan?

  Love this.

• 1:33:45Speaker 03

  Great one.

• 1:33:46Bill Simmons?

Seeing The Breakfast Club at 15 is so much better than seeing it at 10 or 25.

• 1:33:52Chris Ryan?

What's the perfect age to see Goodfellas?

• 1:33:55Bill Simmons?

  One minute from now.

• 1:33:59Chris Ryan?

  Has Benson Goodfellas?

• 1:34:00Bill Simmons?

  Goodfellas is the best.

• 1:34:02Speaker 03

I have to imagine for most movies that are great, it's like sixteen to twenty-two, right?

• 1:34:06Chris Ryan?

I think it's end of high school, beginning of college.

• 1:34:10Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:34:11Chris Ryan?

I think there's plenty of films.

• 1:34:12Speaker 03

It'd be weird if it was like forty-eight.

• 1:34:15Chris Ryan?

Right, but the the movies from that like ninety-five to ninety-seven era, ninety-nine era are the ones that I still think about the most probably because of what age I was.

• 1:34:25Speaker 03

I mean, if there's movies about parenthood, maybe you want to be a parent first, but most movies for super bad, you're never going to say thirty-eight years old is the best time to see super bad.

• 1:34:33Bill Simmons?

I think one thing I've noticed is the movies that are serious, but then have are secretly funny are the ones that have aged the best for me, like Heat and Goodfellas, that are great movies I loved anyway, but.

• 1:34:43Chris Ryan?

  Have like that second layer.

• 1:34:45Bill Simmons?

So fucking funny now when I watch it. Like, hey, just, I was texting you over the break about Tommy. When, uh, when he shoots Spider and then he gets mad at Spider. Get up, you, you, the fuck Spider?

• 1:34:58Chris Ryan?

That's, I mean, when we did Silence of the Lambs live, it was mostly as if Silence of the Lambs was a comedy.

• 1:35:04Bill Simmons?

So it's in some ways, I think the movies sometimes age where it's actually better, like the thirty-fifth time you've seen it than the first time. You know? Because I feel that way about, I definitely feel that way about Goodfellas. I enjoy it as much now as I ever did. But I would say sometimes movies hit, we talked about this in the past with like, when we did like the kicking and screaming, like you. You have to see a movie like that, that's about those characters, right around the time that you have to be the same age.

• 1:35:33Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:34Bill Simmons?

My son really loves those kid in the, it's a summer and the kid who's got the job for the summer and all these people.

• 1:35:41Chris Ryan?

  Snack Shack.

• 1:35:42Bill Simmons?

Yeah, yeah. He loves those movies.

• 1:35:44Chris Ryan?

  Stand by me.

• 1:35:45Bill Simmons?

He's always like, Dad, where are more movies like that?

• 1:35:47Speaker 03

  I agree.

• 1:35:47Bill Simmons?

  The summer movies.

• 1:35:50Bill Simmons?

Movie suggestion from Used Car Cowboy. This is just a weird email. I'm gonna read it. The 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers would be awesome. He wants us to do it. A plus movie, plus it has Jeff Goldblum playing a character called Belichick, who ends up completely stoic, emotionless, and it features the 1978-79 Golden State Warriors. I'd like to imagine Brooke Adams' boyfriend was watching Jerry Maxwell and Alvin Martin from Inside Moves taking that team in the playoffs. Also puts me in mind of finding out how many people in my life were pro-MAGA.

• 1:36:23Speaker 03

I think Used Car Cowboy just did the whole pod for us.

• 1:36:27Bill Simmons?

Steven in Charlotte from Massachusetts wrote this one together. Hey, everyone. Love the show. My dad and I are big listeners. Had an idea for a new category. The Kathy Griffin and Pulp Fiction, Mike Myers and Inglourious Basterds, Lena Dunham and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Award for most jarring casting decision.

• 1:36:43Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:36:44Bill Simmons?

Thanks for such a great show. Hope you're all staying safe.

• 1:36:46Speaker 03

The casting choice that took you out of the movie? Which for me was, and we talked about this, my friends over the last few days, Stanley Tucci in Conclave. I'm like.

• 1:36:57Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, Stanley Tucci.

• 1:36:58Speaker 03

Yeah, you're like, I've been watching you make pasta in your home on YouTube for the last three years. Yeah.

• 1:37:03Chris Ryan?

But very fine. It didn't bother you?

• 1:37:04Speaker 03

  No, no.

• 1:37:05Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 1:37:06Bill Simmons?

  This is an interesting category.

• 1:37:08Chris Ryan?

I'm trying to think of a recent movie that we've done.

• 1:37:11Bill Simmons?

This casting took me out of the movie for two minutes.

• 1:37:14Speaker 03

You can overcast a movie. Like, not everybody needs to be someone. Lena Dunham in Once Upon a Time, you're like, okay, it's Lena Dunham.

• 1:37:21Chris Ryan?

Sometimes it's not the movie's fault. Like, sometimes you'll be watching, like, Running Scared, and you're like, oh, my God, that's Jimmy Smits. Like, that's like a pretty, it's like iconic pop.

• 1:37:29Bill Simmons?

Like, I think Lena Dunham in Once Upon a Time in My Hollywood is a great example of this.

• 1:37:33Chris Ryan?

Maybe that was a little bit too much mustard.

• 1:37:35Speaker 03

Yes, it feels like stunt casting to a degree.

• 1:37:37Bill Simmons?

The reverse is Tom Noonan in Heat.

• 1:37:41Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:43Bill Simmons?

  It's all out there.

• 1:37:45Speaker 03

  It's a good one though.

• 1:37:46Bill Simmons?

A Rocky IV nitpick from Paul. On the 39th anniversary of the end of the Cold War, I have one nitpick regarding the greatest movie ever made. Paulie says, what about the Rose Bowl game? But the fight takes place on Christmas Day, one week before the Rose Bowl. I don't know what to do with this information. I'm just passing along because it obviously has been bothering Paul for a long time. And then Danielle pointed out with the hereditary episode, we mentioned it was piano wire.

• 1:38:11Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, that's what I thought.

• 1:38:12Bill Simmons?

It was a rope saw that used to cut down trees. And the only reason I'm really mentioning this detail is to emphasize the details Ari Aster puts in his films.

• 1:38:19Speaker 03

So it was not a piano wire, it was a rope saw?

• 1:38:21Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:22Speaker 03

  I was unaware of that.

• 1:38:23Bill Simmons?

Rope saw would make more sense due to the area the family lives in.

• 1:38:25Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah. Utah.

• 1:38:27Bill Simmons?

Likely used to make the treehouse. Dave Van Buskirk wants us to do The Sure Thing, which has been on the list forever, but it's another movie that's just not available.

• 1:38:36Chris Ryan?

Also a big one, I'm a One Crazy Summer fan and a Better Off Dead fan.

• 1:38:40Bill Simmons?

So Sure Thing, just not around. A slew of categories from Brian Greer. The Jenny Gump Award for the character who seems nice, but is actually a terrible person.

• 1:38:50Bill Simmons?

I really like this one. Maybe it's a conditional one.

• 1:38:52Speaker 03

The Pam Beasley, yeah. Mike Wallace in The Insider.

• 1:38:56Bill Simmons?

Would this movie have been better if someone died?

• 1:39:01Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:01Bill Simmons?

Not against it. The Ice Storm Award, would this movie have been better if some of the characters randomly had an affair or fucked? A little dark. And then he has monthly themes. Vengeance is Mine Month about characters seeking vengeance, but then Dog Month. Best in Show, Marley and Me, Turner and Hooch. You know, I've circled Dog Month for a while. I can't find the fourth movie.

• 1:39:24Speaker 03

  So those are the three?

• 1:39:25Bill Simmons?

Those three would definitely be in Dog Month.

• 1:39:27Chris Ryan?

Kung Fu is not really good. And it seems like you would want to present like a positive.

• 1:39:31Bill Simmons?

Well, the Simmons family loves dogs, dog movies.

• 1:39:34Speaker 03

Marley and Me is so sad, man.

• 1:39:36Bill Simmons?

  Dog's Purpose, really good.

• 1:39:39Speaker 03

  Oh, okay.

• 1:39:39Bill Simmons?

The sled dog movie that, what's his face made?

• 1:39:42Speaker 03

  Cuba Gooding?

• 1:39:43Bill Simmons?

  Paul Walker, April O.

• 1:39:44Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:45Bill Simmons?

  Awesome.

• 1:39:46Speaker 03

What about that Channing Tatum dog movie recently?

• 1:39:48Chris Ryan?

  Oh, the?

• 1:39:49Bill Simmons?

  Dog.

• 1:39:50Chris Ryan?

  Dog.

• 1:39:50Speaker 03

  Dog.

• 1:39:53Bill Simmons?

  Hasn't gotten there yet.

• 1:39:54Speaker 03

Homeward bound, big one for me as a kid.

• 1:39:57Bill Simmons?

Carl Rice writes in, "For categories, I like the idea of the heat okay, motherfucker." "Award for the moment the movie steps up a notch."

• 1:40:07Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:40:09Bill Simmons?

  Not bad.

• 1:40:10Chris Ryan?

I like that. That's like Denzel Washington giving Ethan Hawke angel dust. He's like, "Oh, you like to get wet." Didn't know that.

• 1:40:18Bill Simmons?

Last one from Jackson in Toronto. He loves the show, listens every week. He's been thinking about Full Metal Jacket for 30 years. Sergeant Hartman has a smart ass response for every answer the privates give. In one scene, he asks Joker, "Do you believe in the Virgin Mary?" And Joker says, "No." The response gets a slap in the face, but also Joker gets promoted. Whole pivotal scene built around the response. What would have happened if Joker said yes? Would the response be outstanding? There's no way the sergeant could have given a disgust or response for answering yes. I think there should be a category for what would have happened if they just did or said blank.

• 1:40:54Chris Ryan?

Yeah, so like this is a little bit of a cousin of the online idea of like, diehard, what if he just like leaves in the first five minutes or you know what I mean? Like there's like ways in which movies could be over in 15 minutes.

• 1:41:07Speaker 03

There's a horror film, like what if they just moved out of the house?

• 1:41:09Chris Ryan?

So but if there's like a pivotal line that if this person had said X.

• 1:41:13Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, there's something there.

• 1:41:14Chris Ryan?

  Like.

• 1:41:15Bill Simmons?

We got some good ones out of that though.

• 1:41:16Speaker 03

Inglourious Basterds, if he does the correct three, does, yeah, do we, do we easily win?

• 1:41:21Bill Simmons?

I can't believe I screwed up. I can't believe I screwed up and sent you the wrong doc.

• 1:41:26Chris Ryan?

  That's okay.

• 1:41:26Bill Simmons?

I sent you, I meant to send you a doc.

• 1:41:28Chris Ryan?

Did you feel like it affected my performance?

• 1:41:30Bill Simmons?

Oh, I only had, wanted you to prepare for seven things, but instead I sent you a doc with seven emails.

• 1:41:35Chris Ryan?

  That's fine.

• 1:41:37Bill Simmons?

We'll use a couple of those. I mean, the most important thing is that Daniel Plainville and.

• 1:41:41Speaker 03

  Plainview, yeah.

• 1:41:42Bill Simmons?

Daniel Plainview. Why'd you correct me?

• 1:41:45Speaker 03

  I don't know.

• 1:41:46Chris Ryan?

Daniel Plainville is starting small forward for Indiana.

• 1:41:50Bill Simmons?

And, uh, and Wilford Brimley, what's his character?

• 1:41:52Chris Ryan?

  Uh, Davishaw.

• 1:41:54Speaker 03

What's his kid's name in There Will Be Blood? H W?

• 1:41:56Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:41:57Speaker 03

  Yeah. I saw H W.

• 1:41:59Bill Simmons?

What did we say we could do like a Wednesday rewatchable? You said.

• 1:42:03Chris Ryan?

Uh, that was the, um, the Luke Wilson mailbag. So basically people would write in with their Luke Wilson hottest takes.

• 1:42:09Bill Simmons?

Movie hottest takes of the movie. I like, I don't mind, I don't mind having people send hottest takes and doing a special little mini episode and seeing if it works. All right, Craig Gorbek, Chris Ryan. We'll be back next week with an actual movie. So thanks for your patience, but The Rewatchables will be kicking back in every week after this episode. Thanks for everybody to spend, thanks to everybody who's sent in really fun, great email questions. We didn't get to nearly all of them, but thanks for that. If you ever want to email us, [email protected]. Good to see you guys.
