• 0:00Chris Williamson?

Well, hello there friends. The flagship series of Modern Wisdom is back. It is Life Hacks, episode 107. Strap yourself in, this one is a real motherfucker. Can I say that? Yeah, I'm gonna say that. It is, it really is. We are doing nearly two hours, the longest Life Hacks episode that we have ever done. Also, I have finally managed to get Modern Wisdom accepted onto the Amazon Associates Influencer Program. What this means is that we now have our own shop front on Amazon where we can list all of the products that we've talked about in this Life Hacks episode and in all of the ones in the past and in the future.

• 0:42Chris Williamson?

So if you want to go on and you want to grab yourself something from a previous episode or you just want to browse and maybe refamiliarise yourself with what it was that we've talked about, everything will be listed on that one link and populating it as I go. So everything from this episode is on now and previous episodes will get added over the next few weeks. But if you do shop through there, it will help to support this channel as well. A small amount of the proceeds go to us at no extra cost to yourself. As always, link will be in the show notes below along with any referral codes or discount codes that we have found for everything that we talk about in this episode. On top of that, this episode is brought to you by The Protein Works. You'll find out all about that as soon as the episode starts, but we're giving away

• 1:24Chris Williamson?

£150 of free products that me, Jonny and Youssef will choose you from The Protein Works itself. All that you have to do is listen. See, that's the problem with using Pomodoro's, that that alarm goes off sometimes when I'm working, but also for that, stay tuned, find out what a Pomodoro is.

• 2:14Chris Williamson?

  Let's go, Life Hacks 107.

• 2:32Speaker 01

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back. It is Life Hacks 107 with Jonathan Watson and Youssef from PropaneFitness.com.

• 2:40Jonny?

You never say boys and girls. You always just say ladies and gentlemen.

• 2:43Speaker 01

It's 18 plus only. Must be 18 plus to follow.

• 2:47Jonny?

  Fair enough.

• 2:47Speaker 01

This is an adult programme for adult people.

• 2:52Speaker 01

So Life Hacks, it's been ages since we've done a Life Hack.

• 2:54Jonny?

  It has.

• 2:55Speaker 01

Welcome back. It's been like, this is the first one of 2019 as well.

• 2:59Jonny?

I spoke to someone today on the phone who was, he said they loved Life Hacks and I told him we're recording the next one today. And he was like, I cannot wait.

• 3:07Speaker 01

It's consistently the best performing in terms of, I think it's just so actionable. Anyway, first things first. Today's episode is brought to you by The Protein Works. If you have a life hack that you want us to try, pop it in the comments below on YouTube if you are just listening, head to the YouTube channel, search Modern Wisdom Podcast, Life Hacks 107 and put your favourite life hack in the comments below. The best life hack, we will trial before the next life hacks and do a review on it. And we're going to pick £150 worth of Protein Works products that we'll send you for free. Thank you very much to The Protein Works for sponsoring this episode. And I really hope that the best one that gets chosen isn't something weird that we have to do. But it might be.

• 3:52Jonny?

I think they should be allowed to say specifically something they want Youssef to do.

• 3:57Speaker 01

Okay. If you would like, okay, we can, we can have that as a, as a little stipulation.

• 4:01Jonny?

But it can either be an all, to all, or to Youssef.

• 4:04Speaker 01

Fine. Yeah. But pop your life hacks in the comments below.

• 4:08Speaker 03

  I'm bullying here.

• 4:09Jonny?

If anyone picks anything terrible and we do it and it wins, you're getting £150 worth of unflavoured hydrolysed rice.

• 4:19Speaker 03

Because the only criteria is we pick the supplements.

• 4:21Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's it.

• 4:22Jonny?

So be careful what you're picking.

• 4:24Speaker 01

Pick something good for us. But yes, pop your favourite life hack in the comments below. Like I say, if you're listening, there is a link to the YouTube channel in the show notes, head there, give us a comment and yeah, we'll, we'll pick someone.

• 4:35Speaker 03

I should say, by the way, hydrolyzed whey, although it's, it's a very rapidly absorbed protein, hydrolysis is digestion. And so it tastes of vomit. And when I say, oh, it's not like, oh, mate, it tastes of vomit, it's horrible. It actually tastes of vomit.

• 4:49Jonny?

It is what vomit tastes like.

• 4:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 4:51Jonny?

  Yeah, the same flavour.

• 4:53Speaker 01

Fine. Right. Who is going to go first? Do you want me to hot potato you, Johnny, or?

• 4:56Jonny?

  Well, you always do.

• 4:57Speaker 01

  Yep, Johnny, go on.

• 4:58Jonny?

We did a podcast the other day with a guy who I didn't really know much about, who had a lot of qualifications.

• 5:04Speaker 01

  Loads of letters.

• 5:04Jonny?

We started off with, Johnny, do you want to do the introduction? I'm like, fuck it up. He got, he got the guy on the podcast. So, uh, my first life hack is get a dog.

• 5:17Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 5:19Jonny?

So I, the thing is, to, to me and my social circle, it's like, not many people I know have dogs. There'll be people listening to this, you've like had a dog for five years.

• 5:27Speaker 01

  Fuck you all about, mate.

• 5:28Jonny?

Fuck you, mate. Like, I got a dog first. Like, don't, don't be, don't be trying to get one over on me with your dog.

• 5:34Speaker 03

But you, you are the, the first in, in this circle of.

• 5:36Jonny?

  Of getting a dog.

• 5:37Speaker 03

  Yeah, you've got in there.

• 5:38Jonny?

So, uh, it does just up level the amount of time you smile and laugh.

• 5:46Speaker 03

  That's great.

• 5:46Jonny?

Which I think is worth, I mean, they're expensive.

• 5:50Speaker 03

I've seen the numerable benefits for you in having Dexter.

• 5:54Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 5:55Speaker 03

Uh, I've seen a few downsides as well.

• 5:57Jonny?

There are definitely downsides. Yeah. So this week he's been unwell, which has meant I had to sleep on the sofa, which has been.

• 6:03Speaker 01

  Why?

• 6:05Jonny?

Because he was waking up to shit two, three times in the night. Okay.

• 6:09Speaker 03

  And being sick.

• 6:10Jonny?

And being sick. So it's more convenient to just be there. Literally. Yeah. So I was like, I was just. Limit my downside.

• 6:16Speaker 01

This is a, it's a really big commitment. It must be, it's like the tester for um having a kid.

• 6:22Jonny?

  Exactly, so exactly.

• 6:23Speaker 01

So how, how are you finding it? Because that would be for me, I'm especially for me as well and any other only children that are listening will know. The degree of independence and non-fuckery that you give about the rest of the world, because it's just you solo. I'm singing your dick out, swinging it round. How has it been having to not only be responsible for another life, but also think very carefully about what someone else's needs are?

• 6:50Jonny?

  It's uh, it's difficult.

• 6:53Speaker 01

  Is it?

• 6:53Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 6:53Speaker 01

  Really?

• 6:54Jonny?

What's it like, like you say, so it went from it was just me and my girlfriend living together. And you just have a life that you, you don't even think about like the little things in your routine. And suddenly, this thing that's like requires constant management. And can't like, doesn't have a bank account, doesn't have a car. You like, he can't do anything himself, can't feed himself. I have to do everything for him. And even when he wants to go out to have a piss or shit, like either he does it in the house. Or I have to say, right, it's now time for.

• 7:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:21Jonny?

For your toilet time, let's go do something about it. Um, so yeah, that and, and also it's. So it's, it's made me real, I've been thinking this week actually. So like, there was a night when both Becker and I were, were sleeping on the sofa. And it's like, we're like scrunch, scrunch on the sofa and it's three A M and Dexter wakes up and he's like barking, needs to go out.

• 7:41Speaker 01

And you hang on, you're both sleeping on the sofa?

• 7:45Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 7:46Speaker 01

  You're too, I mean.

• 7:47Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 7:48Speaker 01

Respect to Becker, but she's a long girl.

• 7:50Jonny?

  Yeah, yeah, I know.

• 7:50Speaker 01

And you are a long, wide human.

• 7:53Jonny?

  Yep.

• 7:53Speaker 01

  How big's this sofa?

• 7:54Jonny?

Not big, like not big enough.

• 7:56Speaker 01

Is the dog on the sofa?

• 7:57Jonny?

No, the dog's on the floor.

• 7:59Speaker 01

I think that you're taking liberties with your furniture here, mate.

• 8:01Jonny?

  Okay.

• 8:02Speaker 01

  Like, I think.

• 8:03Speaker 03

It, there are wide, so it's a bit like this where there's a, there's a wide bum cushion for the sofa.

• 8:08Jonny?

It's, it is this shape, I should, I should.

• 8:10Speaker 01

And do you sleep at a right angle?

• 8:11Jonny?

So one of us sleeps that way, one of us sleeps that way. Yeah.

• 8:14Speaker 01

  What is it?

• 8:15Jonny?

  Head to head.

• 8:17Speaker 01

  Are you kidding?

• 8:18Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 8:18Speaker 01

  Why?

• 8:19Jonny?

I don't know, it just feels, feels natural.

• 8:21Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 8:22Jonny?

  What would you?

• 8:22Speaker 03

Head to head is the worst combination, I think.

• 8:26Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 8:27Jonny?

  This is.

• 8:27Speaker 01

This whole situation has blown me away.

• 8:31Jonny?

Well, okay, so anyway, that's not the story. So that's what we've been doing. And so you wake up at three in the morning and like neither neither of you wants to wake up and do it, but you've got to navigate that. And so like, I can, that's, that's quite testing on a relationship. So I can only imagine. Like, that's like a week of six months we've had him, you, or not that, however long I've had him.

• 8:56Speaker 01

And I suppose a dog's lifespan, it like they grow more rapidly.

• 8:58Jonny?

Yeah, yeah. So that period of time dissipates very quickly. Maybe like, I don't know, what is it like two years when you're a kid? If I'm gonna wake up in the middle of the night and stuff like that.

• 9:07Speaker 01

Uh, maybe, maybe a bit less, I think, based on.

• 9:11Jonny?

It almost feels like you should, if you're thinking about having a kid, you should be made for the dog first. And then like if your relationship lasts, that goes well, then.

• 9:18Speaker 01

So good prep for having a kid, improve the amount of laughs and smiles in your house. It's got you out the house more as well. It's the outdoor thing for me would be.

• 9:25Jonny?

So yeah, so steps consistently, ten thousand consistently.

• 9:29Speaker 03

Ten thousand is a lot of steps as well.

• 9:31Speaker 01

So there is in Atomic Habits by James Clear. He talks about, I want to say it's strategic choices or choice, uh, crucial choices with a downstream implication. I can't remember the specific term that he uses, but he talks about single purchase or single decisions which have multiple downstream benefits. And the first one, and this book is like the fucking bible for habit setting, not read something that's so implementable in a long time. And then the the top one is if your uh area that you're looking to improve on is happiness. Buy a dog.

• 10:06Jonny?

  Just get a dog.

• 10:07Speaker 01

Like, I mean, if if James fucking Clear says it.

• 10:10Jonny?

Yeah, well, so it does definitely like, it's a, i- i- it is a lifestyle increase, but there's just a a cost with that, with that increase, so.

• 10:19Speaker 01

But hugely asymmetric, I'm gonna guess.

• 10:22Jonny?

Yeah, but things like, so the stuff I thought it would, it would knack and related to this is stuff like. I'll never get the wrong one again. Like, I'll never, you know, my mornings will be trash.

• 10:32Speaker 01

Did he do it with you?

• 10:33Jonny?

So this morning he actually did. Yeah, but um.

• 10:36Speaker 01

Is he good at puppy dog?

• 10:37Jonny?

So he he's fucking, ob- obviously brilliant at puppy dog, like he owns that.

• 10:42Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's his pose.

• 10:43Jonny?

Cause downward dog, to be, weirdly, he doesn't do proper downward dog because he's a puppy.

• 10:48Speaker 01

  Right.

• 10:48Jonny?

So he does a proper and he gets his head all the way through and like, fuck, so like, you know, I'm really, my lats are so tight.

• 10:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:55Jonny?

  Um, but.

• 10:56Speaker 01

Daniel, if you are listening, Daniel, voice of Rob, um, can we have dog ward, please?

• 11:01Jonny?

  Dog ward would be good.

• 11:02Speaker 01

  Split screen.

• 11:03Jonny?

  Fucking mint.

• 11:04Speaker 01

That would be good. They do do dog yoga, I think. Fuck knows what that involves, but.

• 11:08Jonny?

Fair enough. But so, actually. You, I have to do all that stuff, so I have to meditate, Romo, whatever, before a certain time, before he needs to be out. So it's actually created a, like, just an unavoidable, I can't get out of it, like, that's not negotiable.

• 11:25Speaker 01

So you've Parkinson's law, time box, do morning routine?

• 11:28Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 11:29Speaker 01

But I suppose the one problem is that if you have a very naughty dog or one that's chaotic with its sleeping routine.

• 11:34Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 11:34Speaker 01

If it gets up at five one day, seven the next, eight the next.

• 11:36Jonny?

Yeah, yeah. Dogs are very, dogs thrive off routine.

• 11:41Speaker 01

  Is that true?

• 11:41Jonny?

If you keep a dog in a routine, especially when it's a puppy.

• 11:43Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 11:44Jonny?

And you you create a routine for the dog, it just, so interestingly.

• 11:47Speaker 01

So you've actually had a benefit from routineizing your life because of the dog.

• 11:51Jonny?

  Around the dog.

• 11:51Speaker 01

  That's great.

• 11:52Jonny?

So if you, like, a lot of people, um, who have a dog and work nine to five, come home at lunch or whatever. If they then work from home in the morning, they'll find the dog just sleeps all morning, because that's what it's been used to doing.

• 12:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:03Jonny?

And it plays in the evening or whatever.

• 12:05Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 12:05Jonny?

So, yeah, so, um, it's quite expensive, more expensive than I thought it was gonna be.

• 12:10Speaker 01

  Insurance, dog food.

• 12:11Jonny?

Things add up. The other thing that is.

• 12:15Jonny?

I do, a really annoying is the way that vets pricing works. So you'll be in the vets with dog and they'll go, oh, we'll just go run test, test, test. And as you leave, the receptionist goes, how about a hundred and twenty pounds? You're like, what? Hmm. What do you mean? Like, no one mentioned. Like, I can't refund it because it's happened. Yeah. So either I'm I'm in debt to you. He's put the AirPods in your pocket and you've walked out of the store and someone's come running out waving a receipt.

• 12:40Speaker 03

So is that is that upsells or is that you've been sold stuff without realising you've agreed to it?

• 12:44Jonny?

Yeah. Well, it's like you. So in the same way, so imagine you go to a doctor and you're like, my stomach hurts. And they do test one, test two, test three, test four. And then as you leave, you get charged for all those tests.

• 12:55Speaker 03

Ah, you say, oh, hang on, I only want test one.

• 12:57Jonny?

But at no point did the doctor say, I'm gonna do this, this, this. It's gonna be. The doctor say which is mandatory and which is. It's just like, oh, well, it could be a spectrum of problems. I'll test for all of them. Billy for all of them. Cheers, mate. Put him in an MRI.

• 13:08Speaker 03

They need to make, yeah, surely you can just do, like, well, I suppose that's what the American system is, like, that, so you come in with a sore finger and they will do like a C T head and.

• 13:16Jonny?

  Really?

• 13:16Speaker 03

  Yeah, they're just fully.

• 13:17Jonny?

So Jen, Jen and Ed. Rather that, though, I think.

• 13:19Speaker 03

  Really?

• 13:20Jonny?

Well, because then the incentives are aligned.

• 13:22Speaker 03

Hmm. You'd what? So you'd rather the the doctor like irradiates you head to toe and like.

• 13:27Jonny?

Well, as long as there's rationale behind it.

• 13:29Speaker 03

  P R exam.

• 13:29Jonny?

Like, obviously, if you're taking the piss, then that's different.

• 13:32Speaker 03

  I see.

• 13:33Jonny?

But if if the incentive is.

• 13:34Speaker 03

But what's to stop them taking the piss?

• 13:36Jonny?

Their time, I suppose. And also, are they, are they for a hundred percent?

• 13:40Speaker 03

So they're getting paid for the time. They're like, oh, I've got a patient in. I'll just, you know.

• 13:44Jonny?

I think I'm okay. I'd rather take the piss in that direction than the other.

• 13:47Speaker 03

  What, than just be like?

• 13:48Jonny?

Like, I'd rather a doctor just gets me out of the room because the ten minutes are up. I'd rather that didn't happen and instead I'm sent for the full, I've got a full blood panel and.

• 13:57Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 13:58Jonny?

  So, bye, dog. See you.

• 14:01Speaker 03

How do we go on to that other vet?

• 14:02Jonny?

Um. What about you, first life?

• 14:04Speaker 03

Just on the back of that as well, uh, if you don't want to commit to a dog or if you can't afford the the long term cost of a dog, borrow my doggy dot com. Excellent website where, I think it's twelve pounds a year, and you just, you basically select dogs within your, like Tinder for dogs, I suppose. Except, so like, you you look at dogs within your range, within your, like, your locality.

• 14:27Speaker 01

  Choose the gender.

• 14:29Speaker 03

  Choose the gender.

• 14:29Speaker 01

  The age, can you?

• 14:31Speaker 03

Yeah, choose the type of dog. People have little dog profile photos. And you just borrow someone's dog if they're going away or if they're.

• 14:37Speaker 01

Has anyone uploaded a photo of a dog with the dog filter from Snapchat on it? Because I would choose that dog.

• 14:42Speaker 03

  Definitely.

• 14:43Speaker 01

Dog, dog squad. Our dogs have a good time, isn't it? Is that where we got the whip it that had psycho motor retardation from?

• 14:50Speaker 03

That, that was a friend, but I have borrowed other dogs from Borrow My Doggy and they were much better. It didn't have the psycho motor retardation.

• 14:58Speaker 01

I do think that getting a, getting a dog when your life is like, if you're out of the house a lot.

• 15:03Speaker 03

  Yeah, exactly.

• 15:04Speaker 01

So this is the reason, like I, I've grown up with dogs and I'm sure like a lot of people, especially young people that are listening. Will think like, fuck, I, I grew up with dogs. I love dogs to bits. Yeah. And it like, it makes me physically, like emotionally. Uh, writhed when I see dogs. I just want to be around them. Yeah, yeah. But because I have so much respect for them. And I know based on my mum and dad's treatment of our dogs. What level of activity and care dogs should have and they can have. I'm like, I'm not going to take this dog. Like a perfect example.

• 15:36Speaker 03

Point is it's disservice to the dog if you're out of the house all the time.

• 15:38Speaker 01

It's just shit. Like, yeah, because the dog doesn't have the choice. It can't go and complain to someone. Like, you can't go complain, it's superior. Yeah, exactly. And like, the proof's in the pudding. Our Rob, our body collie is nearly sixteen. Yeah. And you're like, that's what happens when you get walked three times a day and you have a militarized food and wake routine. Yeah, yeah, like, yeah. Uh, right, life hack.

• 16:01Speaker 03

So my life hack, I've got mine divided into physical and digital. So, uh, my first physical life hack. Is, this was a, a suggestion actually from a guy called Dan. Dan, this was fantastic. You've given me three. Is if you have a accident in the car or an altercation or a road rage situation. So like someone starts getting out of the car coming towards you.

• 16:26Jonny?

Get your phone out and film them.

• 16:29Speaker 03

Instantly diffuses the situation because what what that does is shows a mirror to them. They're knocking at your window, trying to like aggravate you and they're like, hang on.

• 16:38Jonny?

Someone's saying I'm gonna be a meme here.

• 16:39Speaker 03

Yeah, they just see themselves and they're like, oh man, what was that, um, the guy who was the, you're

• 16:47Speaker 03

the the like BBC man who he was a presenter.

• 16:50Jonny?

Yeah, and he got out the car and.

• 16:52Speaker 01

  Was it not the cyclist?

• 16:53Speaker 03

You're going to jail and I I tell you what, you are too. Uh, what was he saying?

• 16:59Jonny?

I don't know what you mean. It's like a David Attenborough type guy.

• 17:02Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 17:02Jonny?

You got, you like lost his shit on a motorway.

• 17:05Speaker 01

Uh, I've seen the one where um, the there's a cyclist coming along and the guy's in the car and he's being super, super angry and very, very threatening. Then gets out of the car and the cyclist starts cycling away and the guy runs along, tries to kick him.

• 17:18Jonny?

  That's poetry, that video.

• 17:20Speaker 01

Video guy Dean will put the slow mo.

• 17:22Jonny?

Didn't you show me a little advice or someone like.

• 17:25Speaker 01

  Full.

• 17:25Jonny?

Dissected the video like frame by frame.

• 17:28Speaker 03

So there there's a bit in it where he's like, he's talking to him and he's like, are you a tank? No. Are you a car? No. You're a cyclist, so get off the bizarre road. Don't you pay road tax? No. And then he's like, and then I saw the most beautiful phrase in the English language that I've ever witnessed. It blasts well past cellar door and any of these kind of T S Eliot things. It is the the phrase, put your fucking mouth shut. You're like, because what this man has done is there is a distinct U-turn in the middle of the sentence where he realises that he's gone with the wrong phrase, but then he pauses for a moment and then thinks, I'm just gonna commit to it. It's so beautiful. Oh.

• 18:10Jonny?

It's the it's the kick. So it's the kick, the slight overextension because it needs to kick some terminal extension there. And then it's like, tries to be down, so it stops, ah, triple double and it stacks it on the.

• 18:21Speaker 01

Face, face and shoulder in the ground, isn't it? Yeah, it's unbelievable. Right, okay, so.

• 18:26Speaker 03

  I'm gonna find it while.

• 18:27Jonny?

So film, and that's, I suppose.

• 18:28Speaker 01

  Get your phone out.

• 18:29Jonny?

Anytime there's a fight, just film.

• 18:32Speaker 03

Just start filming and ah, so it's the BBC road.

• 18:38Speaker 03

That's it. Yes, that's it. You're like, put your hands on the car and prepare to die.

• 18:47Speaker 01

I do remember that. He's in the car park somewhere, isn't he?

• 18:51Jonny?

Right, you've got a great YouTube channel, the starting of a great YouTube channel, or you've defused the fight.

• 18:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:56Jonny?

  There's no downside. Yeah.

• 18:58Speaker 03

  That plus dash cam.

• 18:59Speaker 01

  Million views.

• 19:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 19:01Jonny?

  It's best.

• 19:01Speaker 01

Right, so my first one is using scissors in the kitchen for everything you use a knife for.

• 19:08Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah. Great, life.

• 19:10Jonny?

  Yeah, okay.

• 19:11Speaker 01

So the straight, straight off the bat, like if you are still cutting chicken with a knife, like, give up.

• 19:19Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 19:20Speaker 01

Like buy a fairly okay pair of kitchen scissors, need to be quite sharp. And you'll just, you never need to use chop, cause chicken is out, chicken is on your hands, both hands usually, you're holding it. Might chop your finger, then you've got like salmonella in your, in your wound and.

• 19:35Jonny?

  Nothing worse.

• 19:35Speaker 01

Yeah, salmonella wound. Whereas you can have single hand over the um pot chopping away. Chopping your chicken into little dicey strips or whatever it is. The same goes for vegetables, the same goes for pizza. Like pizza with a pair of scissors, like just fuck it. People are trying, you know, like when the astronauts went to space and they were like, there's no gravity in space. We need to come up with a pen that'll ride upside down. It's like, it's a pencil. Like, yes, mate, fucking go back to.

• 20:03Jonny?

The Americans invested in money in the like the space pen and the Russians just use a pencil.

• 20:10Speaker 03

  Just see X-ray vision through.

• 20:12Jonny?

It used to be able to buy the space pen, it was like you use it underwater and upside down. It was like, we'll use pencil.

• 20:17Speaker 03

I mean, it's amazing that that's, that that sold so well. I guess people just want.

• 20:20Speaker 01

It's a novelty, isn't it? Yeah, yeah. I remember like J M L or Q V C or someone being like, it can ride on walls and it rides upside down.

• 20:29Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 20:29Speaker 01

  Like, no, fuck off, mate. I'll just have a pencil, please. I'll have a H B, I'll have a H B three, thanks.

• 20:35Speaker 03

Do you remember the boys' stuff, the website?

• 20:39Speaker 01

  Is that like Firebox?

• 20:44Speaker 03

Yeah, they, they were all over that kind of thing.

• 20:47Speaker 01

But yeah, scissors, I mean, is there anything that you guys use scissors for that's like?

• 20:50Speaker 03

Yeah, like, you're right, kitchen stuff, because that chicken, how long does it take to try and cut chicken up? You can just go, and then you can get more accuracy, less injury risk.

• 20:59Speaker 01

Less mess. The, the other thing as well is, and I always think this about when I go to the bathroom, and it's an odd habit of mine, but I, when I go to the bathroom, I only use left hand, like if it's a number one, I'm like, I'm just left hand. Like I've, I've grown up doing things with my right hand, holding stuff in clubs, holding a clipboard, holding a phone, doing whatever.

• 21:21Speaker 01

Does that mean that I only need to wash one hand? Because I don't, but I feel like I waste it. However, when I'm in the kitchen and I'm cutting chicken. I've only touched chicken with one hand, but I still wash both.

• 21:31Speaker 03

You're very Arab, so it's an Arab cultural thing to only do uh unsanitary things.

• 21:38Speaker 01

With the left, that's why you shake hands with the right, right?

• 21:40Speaker 03

Yeah, so like in, in Arab culture, if you like, if you do some, if you like touch someone with your left hand, I don't know, if you like.

• 21:49Jonny?

Isn't it something like the, the germs you actually get from touching your penis, having a wee? And, and are smaller than like what you get from a bowl of nuts on a bar and shit like that.

• 21:59Speaker 03

Oh, the bowl of nuts on the bar is an absolute like ecosystem of.

• 22:03Jonny?

Even like, even so, so that's the irony of like, you go into a toilet, go to the toilet, wash your hands and then open the door.

• 22:10Speaker 03

Yeah, there's, I mean, there's an argument that you should be protecting your penis from your hands.

• 22:16Jonny?

  Yeah, that, well, that's, that's what I mean, that's what I mean.

• 22:24Speaker 03

Like, there's more stuff that can go wrong in, into the penis.

• 22:29Speaker 01

  That can stir hands.

• 22:31Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 22:32Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 22:36Speaker 01

This is a serious one too.

• 22:38Jonny?

Yeah, because I've heard things of this, so I thought I knew I knew you certainly had something to say. Because it it does seem to me, there's a number of times I I'm standing in a public toilet and I will see someone have a piss and then leave without washing their hands. You think like, don't be such a fucking nine year old.

• 22:54Speaker 01

  At least do one.

• 22:55Jonny?

Nine year old. How busy is your life that you don't have, you don't have time to wash your hands?

• 23:00Speaker 01

Do you know what is, and I will, I will make this argument. It is painful if you're mid gym set and you're chalky and you've got optimal level of chalk on your hands, but you need to wee and you're like, oh god, to get back to this degree of dryness and chalkiness is like a, it's a four minute job.

• 23:17Jonny?

Washing your hands can be, can mean missing the next set. Like, well, that's all grip gone. Doesn't matter what barber you use.

• 23:23Speaker 01

I'm, I'm actually gonna do a double because this one's pretty much the same.

• 23:26Jonny?

  Okay.

• 23:27Speaker 01

Um, using a plastic bottle to get the yolk out of eggs.

• 23:31Jonny?

Uh huh, with like the squeezy.

• 23:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:34Jonny?

  Okay.

• 23:34Speaker 01

  You've seen that before?

• 23:35Jonny?

It's a very YouTube life. Suck it, suck it up.

• 23:37Speaker 01

  Yeah, have you tried it?

• 23:38Jonny?

So I've found weirdly that the best thing for dealing with egg is eggshell.

• 23:44Speaker 01

  You scoop?

• 23:45Jonny?

You know, if you crack an egg into a pan.

• 23:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:47Jonny?

And there's a bit of shell.

• 23:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:48Jonny?

The best thing to get that out.

• 23:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:51Jonny?

  Is eggshell.

• 23:52Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 23:54Speaker 01

  Fair enough.

• 23:55Jonny?

And also crack the egg and I just do.

• 23:58Speaker 01

  Tip it between the two.

• 23:59Jonny?

  Yeah, tip between the two.

• 23:59Speaker 01

So, I mean, if it's, obviously that doesn't.

• 24:02Jonny?

You use going pop and then it's to stay in the bottle.

• 24:04Speaker 01

  Unbelievable, man. You wouldn't.

• 24:05Jonny?

  And you do multiple.

• 24:06Speaker 01

Oh yeah. Oh yeah. It's, so you can imagine you've cracked the egg. Obviously, the one time this doesn't work is if you're frying and you're cracking it into a pan, because once it starts cooking, you're fucked.

• 24:15Jonny?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 24:16Speaker 01

Um, but so you need to crack it into wherever it is that you put in it, squeeze the bottle, just allow the tip to touch the top of it.

• 24:24Jonny?

  Just like.

• 24:24Speaker 01

  Like, release it, no?

• 24:28Speaker 01

  Yeah, sucks back up.

• 24:29Jonny?

And then what happens with egg number two?

• 24:31Speaker 01

It just keeps on, it just doesn't.

• 24:33Jonny?

You're then on the second egg. When you squeeze, does it not squeeze some of yolk one onto you?

• 24:39Speaker 01

  So you.

• 24:41Jonny?

  Ah, get it, got it.

• 24:43Speaker 01

There you go. So there you go. Scissors and.

• 24:46Jonny?

  You're about to say something.

• 24:47Speaker 01

No, it's all right. Uh, Johnny, what have you got next?

• 24:56Jonny?

  Gusto or HelloFresh?

• 25:00Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 25:00Speaker 03

  Hmm.

• 25:01Jonny?

  That's it.

• 25:02Speaker 03

Drove past a man carrying a Gusto box on the way here.

• 25:04Speaker 01

Are they both the same? They're like Blue Apron in America.

• 25:07Jonny?

  They're pretty, pretty similar, yeah.

• 25:08Speaker 01

  Right.

• 25:09Jonny?

The, I would say Gusto is better, based on having tried both.

• 25:12Speaker 01

  How do you spell that?

• 25:13Jonny?

  G O U S T O.

• 25:16Speaker 01

  Cool.

• 25:16Jonny?

So. My diet, probably the same for both of you, extremely bland. I know you're, you're both doing the slow cooker shit, aren't you? So it's maybe a bit better than mine. Extremely bland, eat the same things every day. When Beck and I eat together, it's the same shit every time. So this, but, and we both have like the, I'd quite like to learn to cook, I'd quite like to do a bit more cooking, but you even buy a recipe book, but like the, the barrier of like, you open it, you're like, one clove of garlic, one bit of ginger, and you're like, fuck off. Like, who just has like ginger in the house? And maybe you do, I don't know.

• 25:49Speaker 03

  Hmm.

• 25:50Jonny?

Who has like exactly the right amount of.

• 25:52Speaker 01

  That he does.

• 25:53Speaker 03

So I, yeah, I've, I've got a big bag of blocks of frozen ginger and frozen garlic that I just chuck one in the slow cooker.

• 26:00Jonny?

  Okay.

• 26:00Speaker 03

When, which is lovely, that, that's a very.

• 26:02Jonny?

  Okay.

• 26:02Speaker 03

Cause the Tesco do like a sachet of like crushed garlic, but it's.

• 26:06Jonny?

  Really expensive.

• 26:06Speaker 03

It's tiny, it's very expensive. If you go, go to like the Indian section, even in like a Morrison's or, you know, Indian supermarket, you get a kilogram bag of garlic blocks or ginger blocks. It's such good.

• 26:17Jonny?

So I, I'm actually amazed at how many recipes have ginger in them. There are so many more than you'd expect.

• 26:23Speaker 03

  It's a great flavour.

• 26:24Jonny?

And, and even just like sauces that you just take for granted, what actually goes into making that, like fucking hell. It's like fifteen minutes of just chopping and dicing just to make a sauce. But anyway, so you get it, you get a, a selection of things you can pick from at the start of the week. You pick the recipes that you like the most. They deliver exactly the right, the right ingredients for that with recipe cards to.

• 26:46Speaker 03

So does it machine learn like what? Oh, that's cool. Okay.

• 26:51Jonny?

So like, uh, this is for me.

• 26:52Speaker 03

Love how that's the thing we call it.

• 26:56Jonny?

Like I, I made a chicken korma from scratch. Like I've had different types of curry that I've never had before. Cause you can just remove the nuts from the preparation.

• 27:05Speaker 01

I guess that's just a way for you. This is a convoluted way to, for you to ensure that there's no nuts in your food.

• 27:11Jonny?

Well, it is, yeah, it is. And, and also.

• 27:13Speaker 03

So I always feel bad for you that you can't have Indian food because of the.

• 27:17Speaker 01

But we can't, we can't go to Chow Priya, which is a crying shame because you'd love it.

• 27:20Jonny?

Uh, yeah, I'm sure I would.

• 27:21Speaker 03

  Kill both of us.

• 27:25Speaker 01

I'd be great. You'd have had oysters and be dead and you'd have had nuts and be dead.

• 27:29Jonny?

But so, so anyone who, it works best for like two or three or four people. But if you are. Well, you could still do it.

• 27:36Speaker 03

I think with, with the portion sizes, Chrissy.

• 27:38Jonny?

  Yeah, you actually.

• 27:38Speaker 03

We, we've seen Chris put away.

• 27:40Jonny?

  They're not big.

• 27:40Speaker 03

Part of yogurt and a, and a saurine in about twenty thought, twenty three seconds.

• 27:44Jonny?

The saurine in the yogurt and the yogurt, it's not like, it's not a petit falou. It's a shared yogurt, like a kilo tub of yogurt. Like the, the meals are on average six hundred to eight hundred calories.

• 27:55Speaker 01

  Per, per serving.

• 27:55Jonny?

Per serving, yeah. And then normally two servings. So you could.

• 27:58Speaker 03

Chris laughs in the face of eight hundred calories.

• 28:00Jonny?

Um, really good. Like the stuff that I've eaten over the past three weeks for dinner, I would never.

• 28:06Speaker 01

What would you, uh, if, can you pick? Like if someone's gonna go, cause I'm gonna guess there'll be a referral. Have you got a referral code? Bet you do.

• 28:12Jonny?

  I do, yeah.

• 28:13Speaker 01

Fantastic. Referral code will be below. I'm gonna guess you'll get one free meal, like.

• 28:16Speaker 03

  This is your bowl.

• 28:17Jonny?

This is my, this is my turn.

• 28:19Speaker 01

So if someone's gonna, if someone's potentially gonna go and get a gusto or whatever it is.

• 28:22Jonny?

  Gusto.

• 28:23Speaker 01

Gusto. Um, what meals would you recommend?

• 28:26Jonny?

The difficulty is they change every week.

• 28:28Speaker 01

  Bastards.

• 28:29Jonny?

So, but to be honest, it's great. There's always variations on the theme. So the.

• 28:33Speaker 01

  It's Indian week.

• 28:34Jonny?

The taco, well, no. So there's like, so there's always like a burrito or a taco one. There's always a burger. There's always a maker and pizza. There's always curry variations. It's like moussaka's.

• 28:47Jonny?

Like I think the one we've just selected is like a, um.

• 28:54Jonny?

What's the name of that? Peanut puree. Peanut puree. Satay chicken salad. Peanut salad and peanut chicken. With relish. With with a peanut sauce. How much is it? Macaroni, chicken macaroni and a one pot Mexican beef, rice and beans are the two that I picked. Okay, well, I mean, the chance of you ever eating that or cooking that. Well, precisely, precisely. Um, so and the nice thing about it is that the cards they give you, the recipe cards are hole punched. So we're just gonna keep the recipe cards and then over time you can accumulate like what Yusuf has. You you think like, oh, I need this much garlic and ginger for all these recipes. So you start to accumulate it. And they're all they've all got the macros and it's all in my fitness pile. Piece of piss. Really good. That's awesome. And that's G A G U.

• 29:39Jonny?

G O U S T O. Can you find your referral company? Uh, I'll send it to you. Cheers. Yusuf, you're up.

• 29:47Speaker 03

So I've got another physical one.

• 29:49Jonny?

  Oh, two in a row.

• 29:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:50Jonny?

  Bloody hell.

• 29:52Speaker 03

You you guys have been physical ones as well.

• 29:54Jonny?

  Oh, it's digital.

• 29:55Speaker 03

  So.

• 29:56Jonny?

  Digital. Digital.

• 29:57Speaker 03

Keep dental floss in the shower, you know, where where you where you have all the stuff to hang the shower gels.

• 30:03Jonny?

  Okay.

• 30:04Speaker 03

Because flossing is one of those things that you just never get around to doing.

• 30:07Jonny?

  Okay.

• 30:08Speaker 03

Whereas you're not doing anything in the shower. You're just standing there getting wet and warm. So. Pull out a dental floss. And also it means when you spit out all the blood and stuff, it just goes off in the shower, drains away. So we spoke to Dean Saint Mark recently. That said that the largest source of systemic inflammation in the body is from your gums. And because most people are terrible at flossing, there's a huge low hanging fruit with flossing. And that brings down your CRP, which is the inflammatory marker produced by your liver and that bringing that down correlates with. Better body composition, better mood, lower stress, all those things. So so.

• 30:47Jonny?

  Fuck me.

• 30:47Speaker 03

  I know.

• 30:48Jonny?

This happened with me saying to him, because he was like, depression has got. Did I just talk over you there?

• 30:55Speaker 03

  No.

• 30:55Jonny?

No, no. I just thought I just had this thought. I was like, started speaking. I was like, oh shit, did I just completely kill someone? Lost it. Um, so I said, he was like, you people have a, I might get this wrong, genetic predisposition to depression.

• 31:11Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 31:14Jonny?

And I said, like, if you have that, what can you do? And he said, well, you manage your information. And I was like, fine. How do you manage your information? He said, well. So, well, flossing.

• 31:24Speaker 03

  Floss your teeth.

• 31:25Jonny?

Fucking hell. So you're telling me, mate, that if I just floss my teeth.

• 31:29Speaker 03

  Your teeth.

• 31:30Speaker 01

  My depression's gone away.

• 31:32Jonny?

I'm less likely to get depression, so. Eh? Hope he's not washing. Terrible business. Um, but yeah, so flossy teeth. Using the scum method.

• 31:43Speaker 01

So do you use, um, do you use mouthwash?

• 31:46Speaker 03

  Occasionally.

• 31:47Speaker 01

Um. So for me, I've managed to get myself into the rhythm that the degree of cleanness that I'm I'm happy with for my teeth now is mouthwash clean. So that's, you know how, I I don't get how, um, some people are able to leave the house without cleaning their teeth. For me, there's, it's the same as walking out the house without your shoes on. I'd just be like, I'm I'm not ready to go. Like, and there is part of me that isn't done. I'd be like, walking out with no pants on or something like that. And for me now, the bar for cleanliness for mouth has been raised up to like green, blue, Listerine, which is like the hat one. Like the fucking.

• 32:27Speaker 03

Do you remember the original flavour, Listerine?

• 32:29Speaker 01

  That's it, yeah.

• 32:30Speaker 03

  Is that it?

• 32:30Speaker 01

  Hardcore one.

• 32:31Speaker 03

To change the colour. It used to be yellow, just like original flavour, had no flavour. It was just like bleach flavour.

• 32:38Speaker 01

Oh, right, okay, no, no, this, that might be a bit more old.

• 32:40Jonny?

  There's a purple one.

• 32:41Speaker 03

I don't think they have it anymore.

• 32:42Speaker 01

No, uh, you need that one, man. You want your house, fucking mouth to be on fire. Yeah. Um, but yeah, so.

• 32:48Speaker 03

They've pussified it recently, mate. Honestly, the the like, the one in the nineteen nineties, back in when Old Spice was like a a scoop that you have to.

• 32:55Speaker 01

  Lather on.

• 32:56Jonny?

They'll just use Brill Cream, yeah.

• 32:59Speaker 01

Someone, someone fucking requested that on a photo shoot the other day. Anyway, Brill Cream, yeah, yeah, yeah. What do you style your hair with? And I saw on the call sheet, one of the male models had requested Brill Cream. I said, the fuck.

• 33:09Speaker 03

  Come on, mate.

• 33:09Speaker 01

He was invited David Beckham with us.

• 33:11Jonny?

  Fuck, twenty twenty nineteen, no.

• 33:13Speaker 03

Yeah, so with the dental floss thing, I knew, always knew that I should floss at the back of my mind. Admittedly, Dean St Mark has like fully convinced me to do that now.

• 33:22Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 33:23Speaker 03

But even knowing that. No one needs convincing of the benefits, but it's like it's still not something you really get around to doing it. And I had it in my drawer, out of sight, never really got around to it. Whereas now in the shower, it's like, oh, great.

• 33:35Speaker 01

Have you got a particular type? Cause you can get like mint dental floss.

• 33:38Speaker 03

Oral B satin one, just because if you get a cheap one, um, it ends up like catching and fraying and then you get little bits stuck in it. So it's better to just pay like.

• 33:48Speaker 01

You don't get like, it's like twenty metres or something in this little.

• 33:51Speaker 03

You get even more, forty, fifty metres. Yeah. So you may as well pay three pounds, like an extra forty p or something for the, the nice one.

• 33:57Speaker 01

And that'll last what, like probably half a year or something like that?

• 34:00Speaker 03

Yeah. And if you get a minty one, like obviously there will be a residual taste of the plaque that you're clearing out from between the teeth. And if you use an unflavoured one, then there's still gonna be that sense. So.

• 34:11Speaker 01

Should you, oh, should you floss before you clean your teeth? Cause I tend to clean my teeth then get in the shower.

• 34:16Speaker 03

  Hmm. So I, I don't know. And I.

• 34:19Speaker 01

I'm gonna presume that you, you must have to floss first, then clean then mouthwash.

• 34:23Speaker 03

Clean all the, yeah. I've got a few dentist friends that are very specific about the order of this stuff. Cause they're like, oh, but you introduce a bacteremia when you floss. And so there has to be the frequency of this. And then you've got to leave the fluoride to can, to soak into the teeth for this much time and don't have sugar within this much time.

• 34:37Speaker 01

David Breton, if you're the owner.

• 34:38Speaker 03

Um, final tip for flossing, rather than like trying to fiddle around with each tooth. Take a strip this long, wrap it on both fingers.

• 34:47Speaker 01

How long? Around about foot and a half?

• 34:49Speaker 03

Probably, yeah. Wrap, wrap it around both index fingers, three or four times.

• 34:53Speaker 01

Like you're a, like you're a Turkish man about to thread someone's eyebrows.

• 34:56Speaker 03

Yeah, like a Turkish man or a hitman about to grot someone. And then start at the very back, both, both teeth up at the top. And then just work through. So you're doubling, you're doubling your efficiency with flossing and then do the back.

• 35:10Speaker 01

Is it in and out once? A little side to side to get it in.

• 35:13Speaker 03

  They say don't saw.

• 35:15Speaker 01

That'll sigh through the, through the gums I'm getting up.

• 35:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 35:18Speaker 01

So is it, is it just once in and out or a couple of times?

• 35:20Speaker 03

So I just go once in and then work all the way forward and then bottom teeth all the way back.

• 35:24Speaker 01

But you must have to go, you can't, you can't get the middle one.

• 35:28Speaker 03

Oh, so for the middle one, yeah.

• 35:29Speaker 01

I don't think I could get floss right in the back of my teeth. I might.

• 35:34Speaker 01

See how far you can get you.

• 35:36Speaker 03

No, you can't. See how far you get you.

• 35:39Speaker 03

  Come on.

• 35:39Speaker 01

You do, you do draw it, cause I. You should be able to fit. Fit all your hand in your mouth.

• 35:44Speaker 03

Three, I think three fingers you should be able to get.

• 35:46Speaker 01

  Three knuckles, can you?

• 35:50Speaker 03

No, not those knuckles, just that.

• 35:52Speaker 01

  What? Oh, like that?

• 35:53Speaker 03

  Yeah, should get those three.

• 35:55Speaker 01

Uh huh. Oh. Ah. Ah, that hurt. Have you ever had cramp occur in your jaw when you're trying to eat a really big burger? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you're like. Down like.

• 36:06Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 36:07Speaker 01

  Yeah. Right, okay, my turn.

• 36:08Speaker 03

  Lump that pops out, then.

• 36:09Speaker 01

My turn, my turn. I'm gonna stay.

• 36:11Speaker 03

I did a maths lesson at school and I had my mum stuck up and I was like, ah, you stop being naughty. It was like, ah. And yeah, like a lump pops out there.

• 36:20Speaker 01

That's, I know exactly what you mean. Yeah, yeah, yeah, something occurs in there. Yeah, it's so weird. I've never had that before. If you've had, if you've had jaw problems, get at me on social media and tell me about your jaw problems that make us feel better. I'm gonna stay in the kitchen for mine, staying in the kitchen.

• 36:33Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 36:34Speaker 01

Today. Um, do you know the correct way to cut a cake?

• 36:39Speaker 03

I'm probably doing it all wrong. I bet this is one of those things like tying your shoelaces where actually you realise all your life you've been.

• 36:45Speaker 01

When you say the correct way.

• 36:46Speaker 03

  Mm hmm.

• 36:46Speaker 01

Or the most effective way to keep freshness?

• 36:49Speaker 03

  No.

• 36:50Speaker 01

So you've got a cake of any shape, uh, oh, a cake of most shapes. I'm gonna guess there'll be some, oh. If it's an octagonal shape that has, uh, three tetrahedrons inside of it, then actually it's more effective to go from the, the northern quarter. Um, but, uh, so what you want to do, most people when they get a cake, they'll cut a little wedge out, right? So you go from the middle down, like classic birthday cake, right? Mother, mother of birthday party. Wedge down, wedge out again, and then from that, the line that's been made, you'll continue to cut one wedge all the way around until the cake's gone. But you have no way of protecting the sponginess, the lovely soft sponginess inside from the air outside. Which is when you then need to cling film over the top.

• 37:36Speaker 01

However, if you have a cake, circular or square or whatever it might be like that, and you cut a complete line from one side right the way to the other.

• 37:45Speaker 03

  Then you can.

• 37:45Speaker 01

And then you just slide the rest of the cake together. The icing around the outside will continue to protect it. And it will still, all of the lovely soft sponginess will be hermetically sealed inside by the icing.

• 37:56Speaker 03

So there's a problem that I see with that, which is as you approach the end of the cake, you end up with the final two slices being almost exclusively icing.

• 38:05Speaker 01

  Fun.

• 38:06Speaker 03

  Fun.

• 38:06Speaker 01

  So.

• 38:07Speaker 03

I suppose you can look forward to that.

• 38:08Speaker 01

  Hold on, hold on.

• 38:11Jonny?

  There's a circle cake.

• 38:12Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 38:13Jonny?

Right. Are you cutting a line or are you cutting a piece?

• 38:16Speaker 03

So you bisect, he's saying you bisects the whole cake across the diameter and then you move bits in.

• 38:21Speaker 01

So you're gonna make two parallel lines, the width that you want, and then go.

• 38:26Speaker 03

You end up with a really weird slice of cake.

• 38:28Jonny?

  Ah, I see. So I.

• 38:29Speaker 01

Well, you're not. You're gonna end up with a perfectly straight slice of cake.

• 38:32Jonny?

You're gonna end up with it with, uh, so you know, you know, sometimes you go to a birthday party where there's like forty kids there.

• 38:38Speaker 01

Yeah, and you end up with.

• 38:38Jonny?

And you went like cocos or lasaquesa and you end up with a, with a slice of cake. How you the fuck send this?

• 38:44Speaker 01

  Slice instead of a wedge?

• 38:45Jonny?

Yeah, but it's something with a proper cake technique, isn't it? So actually, we were exposed to professionals from a very young age.

• 38:51Speaker 03

Cause occasionally you'd get a slice of cake that was really icingy.

• 38:54Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 38:54Speaker 01

That's exactly what's happening. And then you, you are right, you have, you have identified that as you get more towards the crust at the, at the very, very end.

• 39:02Jonny?

A slither of cake and a big bit of.

• 39:04Speaker 01

Well, I mean, who doesn't want that? Actually, are you allergic to marzipan?

• 39:08Jonny?

No, almonds. Almonds are okay. Almonds and walnuts are fine. So I only know that. It's a funny story. I only know that because.

• 39:15Speaker 01

  Is it?

• 39:15Jonny?

I was sat in uni, so me, Dom, audio broadcast Gibson.

• 39:23Speaker 01

  Digital.

• 39:24Jonny?

Right. We were sat playing Call of Duty on three separate TVs on the same wifi, just preventing anybody from being able to access the, the VLE or any, or any, anything they needed to do. And I said, you know what? Fuck this. I'm sick of this. Drove to the co-op. Picked up hazelnuts, walnuts, almonds, gave Dom the EpiPen and said, I'm gonna work through these while playing COD if I have a reaction. Which is negligent. And I got, got, did almonds, did walnuts.

• 39:52Speaker 03

You ate, you ate them all?

• 39:53Jonny?

Both fine. I ate one, then a couple more.

• 39:55Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 39:55Jonny?

Same with walnuts. Thought three times in a row seemed a bit, a bit much. I'm not bothered with the hazelnuts.

• 40:02Speaker 03

  Playing Russian roulette?

• 40:03Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 40:03Speaker 01

What would happen had you have eaten the hazelnuts?

• 40:05Jonny?

Sorry, I don't know, but I think I'd probably be okay. I think I probably have by accident.

• 40:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:10Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 40:11Speaker 01

It's a bit of a fitnessy thing, right?

• 40:12Jonny?

  Very fitnessy.

• 40:13Speaker 01

  Right. Johnny, you're right.

• 40:14Jonny?

  I am so fitness.

• 40:15Speaker 01

  Johnny, come on.

• 40:17Jonny?

Uh, I had one on that. Did my done.

• 40:22Speaker 01

I'm creating the show notes as we go here. I've life hacked, the life hacks.

• 40:25Speaker 03

  Amazing.

• 40:26Jonny?

Three things per day, one thing per week.

• 40:29Speaker 01

  Give away.

• 40:30Jonny?

  No, do, complete.

• 40:32Speaker 03

And the three things per day are many things.

• 40:34Jonny?

Yeah, so a book called Essentialism, book called The One Thing, basically all attack the same thing, which is that

• 40:45Jonny?

lack of focus, procrastination, being ineffective, et cetera, come from just trying to do too many things and being diffusely focused. So each week, pick a thing, like a project that you're going to move forward or complete. And then at the start of each day, look at your to-do list and pick three things and do those three things every single day. And it sounds insanely simple, really difficult.

• 41:07Speaker 01

Give me an example of three things.

• 41:10Jonny?

So that'll all be like work related for me. So it might be send to marketing emails,

• 41:17Jonny?

finish off a certain piece of automation or software, write a piece of content. So it's not stuff that would be,

• 41:25Jonny?

it's not stuff that like you are doing all the time, recurring. It's not a low level task. It's stuff that if you didn't make time to do it, it probably wouldn't get done.

• 41:34Speaker 03

It's been working very well for you as well.

• 41:36Speaker 01

Do you think that this, this works particularly well in a job where you have

• 41:42Speaker 01

like consistent categories of tasks that come up? For instance, if you are someone that works in

• 41:50Speaker 01

customer service or something like me, which is very responsive. If the majority of your job is conflict management or problem solving.

• 41:58Jonny?

So maybe not in that instance, yeah.

• 42:00Speaker 01

I'm just trying to, I'm trying to think about how.

• 42:02Jonny?

It's for, it's for stuff, so something that Yusuf's big on is the Eisenhower matrix. So anything that's in urgent, not urgent, but important. So stuff that like, stuff that we procrastinate on, essentially.

• 42:13Speaker 01

Got you, got you, got you.

• 42:15Jonny?

If you make time for things like that. Then it helps. Yeah. But like if if all of your job is just in the urgent and important category and everything has to be done now. Yeah. Then yeah, but like certainly, I think most people in in knowledge work. So you are producing something physical procrastination shit constantly. Hundred percent. And even students, like pick three lectures you wanna do today. Or pick a lecture you wanna do this week and then slides you want, you know, like it's just it's just chunking things down and also. Um, like there are apps you can use to track this, so like to do is you can set a task goal for the day. So when you've done three your three things, it goes like congratulations and um.

• 42:57Jonny?

But doing, if you do it through the during the work week, you do fifteen things a week, fifteen mini things and one big thing, that's a shit time. And most people can't look back over the past week and say, these are the fifteen, like relatively important things I did. Yeah. So it's just having having some direction and and purpose with what you do. Okay, that's good.

• 43:18Speaker 03

So to take off on that and to explain further on the on the Eisenhower matrix. It is, you have a quadrant, four quadrants of urgent and important. So you have urgency and you have importance, urgent and important, urgent and not important. Important but not urgent and not urgent, not important. So those are the four quadrants with important and urgent, you do them right away. With important but not urgent, you'd schedule them to do them at some point in the future. With not important and urgent, you delegate and with not important, not urgent, you just sack them off.

• 43:56Jonny?

So could you could you give a type of example of a task that might fall into each one?

• 44:01Speaker 03

  Yeah, so.

• 44:02Jonny?

  So urgent and important.

• 44:04Speaker 03

So for who who's who's the who's the avatar here?

• 44:09Speaker 03

That uh desk worker, desk job. Okay, so. Or you just you. So. Whatever. Okay, so well, for for a desk worker, you've got like urgent and important. You have a project that is due tomorrow. And it's a presentation that has to be done. You need to do it because it requires your knowledge or expertise. And it can't wait until next week. So you just you prioritize that. You do that immediately. Urgent and not important uh might be some tasks that maybe the intern could do. If you just like spent ten minutes with them, explain what they need to do, work through some, it's like some kind of monotonous task that. Has to be done, but it's not really top of your priorities. So you just you schedule in a time to speak to them and then you dedicate that.

• 44:52Speaker 03

For the um uh important but not urgent stuff, that might be stuff that actually progresses your career long term. That's the danger zone, isn't it? Danger zone, building skills and it's stuff that it's so easy to just put it off because you think. Oh, well, there's no real consequence if I don't do this, at least not in the short term. But long term, if you don't, if you neglect the stuff that is important and not urgent. Then your whole life starts to just trundle along and be crap. So. That's the stuff you need to schedule in and dedicate time on a weekend or whatever to do, which might be like. Reading, improving yourself, training, or the like, training is a very good example, actually, because it's uh. CPD of some sort. Yeah, CPD like, because there's no, there's no consequence of not doing it.

• 45:36Speaker 03

There's no immediate gain from doing it, but it builds up and creates. James Clear.

• 45:40Jonny?

I think a lot of people in, at least that I speak to in. Desk jobs, the stuff that would fit into that category is exactly that sort of thing, like, I wanna learn to code.

• 45:49Speaker 03

  Oh, okay.

• 45:50Jonny?

I wanna take watercolor classes, or you know, like shit that if you don't think, right, I'm gonna do this tonight or this weekend.

• 45:57Speaker 03

Do you know, I've done that's been good for that, Coursera, have you heard of it? Ah, okay, yeah.

• 46:00Jonny?

  Is that like? Udemy.

• 46:02Speaker 01

Similar to Udemy or Great Courses Plus, but it it's like, so I went and I did a a big analysis of all of this at the start of the year. I wanted to formalize my learning so that I was accountable to an external timeline. And they have like week by week by week um modules that you're moving through. And if you start fall behind, they give you emails and stuff like that.

• 46:22Jonny?

  Okay.

• 46:23Speaker 01

Coursera seemed to be, as far as I could see, one of the most sophisticated, like Udemy's got some good stuff on Great Courses Plus just seems to be like for people from YouTube to share referral links to. Doesn't really look like there's that much good stuff on there, but um.

• 46:38Jonny?

  Cause I'm masterclass as well.

• 46:40Speaker 01

Oh, fuck, I'm gonna guess there's loads.

• 46:42Jonny?

I think it's because I nearly bought it when I was going through the cookery online. I could Gordon Ramsay has a masterclass thing.

• 46:48Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah, really.

• 46:48Jonny?

Four hundred quid or something or.

• 46:50Speaker 03

So I'm guessing Coursera is like vetted and it's been.

• 46:52Speaker 01

Well, it's it's issued, it's issued by actual unis, but they have the most popular uh MOOC, Massive Open Online Course.

• 47:02Jonny?

  Right.

• 47:02Speaker 01

Um, in the world, the best, and it's free.

• 47:06Jonny?

  Wow.

• 47:06Speaker 03

So it's interesting. The accountability is very important there. I think like something that George said to me the other day was that he wanted to set up some dropshipping project. And he was like, I'm not good. I don't want to speak to you about the specifics yet because I've not taken action. And I know that I I'm the kind of person that gets the same hit from talking about doing something as I do from actually doing it. And so that's that's like just kind of talking about doing a thing. But if you have a a course where it's like you need to check in with a with a coach or you need to take something off, then it gets rid of that. And it's like, you have to actually do the thing.

• 47:40Speaker 01

So what's not important and not urgent?

• 47:43Speaker 03

That's just stuff that um um that you you maybe it it may masquerade as uh important, not urgent. So the development stuff. But you look at it and you think, actually, this isn't going to add much value to my life, but it's just hanging over my head. The Warren Buffett thing where he said to his pilot, what are the twenty five things that you want to achieve in in your career? And he was, oh, it's all this stuff. And he's like, right, take number five to twenty five and put all that stuff on your do not ever do under any circumstances list. Because he was like, all that's gonna do is crowd your, your thinking. And you know, the essentialism, I'm sure you use that example of essentialism where it's like,

• 48:20Speaker 03

you just need to have a single focus. So I'm terrible with that. I've got too many things on and I'm always trying to do too much stuff. And so the Eisenhower matrix has been a huge improvement for me. And so the life hack is an app called Focus Matrix, which is, it's free. There's lots of paid ones as well, but I think all you need is a free one. It's literally just like a to do list in four quadrants, color coded. And you can add little sub notes into the to do list and it's just completely helps.

• 48:45Speaker 01

Is that the same, same guys as B Focus Pro?

• 48:47Speaker 03

  It is, yeah.

• 48:48Speaker 01

So it ties, syncs with that.

• 48:49Speaker 03

Yeah, so you can buy, so B Focus Pro is a Pomodoro timer. And so you can buy the suite and they're all like two quid each or something. So you can definitely buy all, all the lot.

• 48:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 48:57Speaker 03

And then they just sync with each other. So you can take a task, say, right, start Pomodoros on this and then it works through.

• 49:03Speaker 01

And it tracks the Pomodoros in, in each segment as well.

• 49:05Speaker 03

  Lovely.

• 49:06Speaker 01

Hmm. Very clever. Yeah, that's like. Very clever one. God. Uh, right. Okay. So. I don't think that we've actually properly done Pomodoros and how big of a, a change it's been for me.

• 49:21Speaker 03

  Have we not?

• 49:22Speaker 01

No, not, not properly. I was going to do an entire one on, on like productivity and stuff like that.

• 49:26Speaker 03

I'm realising, we're making so many references to things like saying Pomodoro. If you haven't heard of Pomodoro, be like, oh.

• 49:33Speaker 01

  What's that?

• 49:33Speaker 03

  Tomato.

• 49:34Speaker 01

  So tomato.

• 49:36Speaker 03

  Italian, Italian tomato.

• 49:38Speaker 01

  Tomato. Was it a normal?

• 49:42Speaker 01

So, um, Pomodoro, Pomodoros, Pomodoros are, for me, have been probably the single biggest shift in work. And how I schedule my time when I'm at work, doing some form of work that I've ever had. Um, like that's, it's the same as. I just, I, so I was thinking about this yesterday. I don't know why I can't understand how other people. Construct their working day without doing it.

• 50:11Speaker 03

  Hmm.

• 50:11Speaker 01

This is how big of a frame shift using the, I'm gonna guess that it's similar for you guys now as well. Like if you were.

• 50:17Speaker 03

That's such a great metric. It's like, as soon, when you do something and you're like, how do people live without this?

• 50:22Speaker 01

  Automatic, automatic.

• 50:23Speaker 03

  I was literally, yeah, it's.

• 50:25Speaker 01

What the fuck are you doing? What? Like, you, you put your foot to the floor and you move your hand to choose the gear. What? Like, like a fucking Neanderthal? Like.

• 50:34Speaker 03

  I used to think.

• 50:35Speaker 01

Oh my god, churn your own butter as well.

• 50:37Speaker 03

  God, so.

• 50:38Jonny?

Paul Nutt Small's, the extension of that was like, cause people say, oh no, you know, I like changing my gears. It's like, well, where does that stop? Like, well, I'm gonna get out and push the car or I'm gonna get out and start the car manually myself.

• 50:49Speaker 03

  Wind the windscreen.

• 50:50Jonny?

I'm gonna make my own fuel from, crush the raw material. But um.

• 50:54Speaker 03

Cause it's not manly, is it?

• 50:55Speaker 01

It's to feel involved in the driving experience.

• 50:58Jonny?

I used to think that about.

• 50:59Speaker 03

  You're, you're, you're a woman, you're a little girl, if you drive a.

• 51:02Jonny?

But, but I can change gear faster than you can.

• 51:05Speaker 03

Well, cause you don't have to.

• 51:05Jonny?

The car just does it. Yeah. Hmm. There's a guy on a speed awareness course where someone, that I was on the speed awareness course, someone was like, the, the instructor was, was talking about what gear to choose. Going downhill and going up is a, he's like, I drive a manual car. I drive an automatic car. And he's like, well, yes, that would do it for you. So what's the point of this fucking segment then? Like, there'll be at least half the people in this room will have.

• 51:30Speaker 01

They should do, or they should have gone back to listen to life hacks one on one. And so Pomodoro, um, essentially you do a twenty five minute period of focused work. You take a five minute break and then you go back to doing your work. It sounds pretty simple and it is. You create a list of all the things that you have to do. You then order them in order of importance. And then there's one task that you're working on at one time. So it avoids the uh multitasking uh issue that a lot of us come up against, which is what derails you. Oh, I'll do a little bit of this and I'll do a little bit of that. And it's like, no, no, no, no. You begin down your list of priority. You start at the top and you begin to move down.

• 52:13Speaker 01

One thing that I've liked, particularly liked to do is to um use the zygotic effect, open loop, close loop uh in collaboration with the Pomodoro technique, which is that when my alarm goes off to say that it's the end of twenty five minutes, even if I'm partway through a word, it'll be hands off keyboard.

• 52:33Speaker 03

  Hmm.

• 52:33Speaker 01

  And yeah, yeah.

• 52:35Jonny?

  Fine, I will sell them.

• 52:37Speaker 01

Um, one of the advantages of that is that when I come back to begin my work, you can always finish the word. You've got that open loop so you fall back into the work, whereas if you allow yourself to complete it, it fills up more of a bookend. So Parkinson's Law, work expands to fill the time given for it. Time boxing also makes you accountable externally to the clock. If you use B-Focus Pro, which will be linked in the show notes below, if you use that, there's a little timer on MacBook which counts down from 25, which also makes you accountable. And it's just a little bit like, the analogy you draw to meditation is when you return to the breath or when you realise that you've been lost in thought. Like, you'll do something and it's a little red clock, it's not that distracting, but it's distracting enough for if you're not doing the task that you're supposed to be doing, for you to think, oh

• 53:22Speaker 01

fuck, like, I've got 16 minutes left. And you do, like, those little periods. You can tie this in with Professor Ewan Lawson from episode 17, his 20-20-20 rule. So every 20 minutes for 20 seconds, look at something that's 20 feet away, which helps to reset the ocular muscles so that you don't get too much eye strain. It's also good for if you have stretching that you need to do throughout the day, like little bits of exercises, it ensures, like, if you're getting a good enough routine with it, you can have, oh, well, I'm gonna have my water consumption externally accountable to my pomodoros, my stretching is accountable to my pomodoros. If you charge your AirPods, when you're doing your pomodoros, you will never run out of AirPod charge. Like, there's so many different things that

• 54:06Speaker 01

you can do. And B-Focus, yeah, B-Focus Pro has the timer for 15 or 25 on, then five off. And then for me, I've got every four, a 15-minute break during my pomodoro break time, which means that you can go, that for me is also externally accountable. Every 15-minute one for me is a walk that I know takes 10 minutes, plus I've got two minutes to put my shoes on, take them off, and come back in, have a glass of water. And the shift is, it's nothing short of global, like, in terms of my...

• 54:40Jonny?

I think the reason that, you know, you're saying, like, how do people manage it otherwise? I honestly think that, so I worked in a coffee shop with a friend who works in, he works as an accountant in a business. And I said to him, like, I used to do, I used to work at KPMG with him, we used to revise together.

• 54:58Speaker 01

So you worked in a coffee shop, you mean you were working on a laptop in the coffee shop?

• 55:01Jonny?

  Yeah, yeah, sorry, yeah.

• 55:05Speaker 01

  Taking espresso.

• 55:06Jonny?

Doing pomodores. Charlie, what are you doing, mate? I don't know, I want a pomodora.

• 55:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 55:09Jonny?

  Um.

• 55:10Speaker 01

  Five minute break.

• 55:10Jonny?

So we used to do, we used to revise together for press and exams, we used to revise in pomodores. Um. And so when he was working with me, we were doing pomodores together. And after two pomodores, he said to me, that is the most uninterrupted work I've done for as long as I can remember. Cause he's constantly getting people asking him stuff or questions. And I think the way the average person gets through a workday is they're in an office and it's very, very disrupted environment and there's very little intense work. And I, I find that so weird to think back to, that's how it used to work.

• 55:43Speaker 01

  Bizarre.

• 55:44Jonny?

Like for me, like eight pomodores of work or 12 pomodores of work in a day is a lot of work.

• 55:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 55:48Jonny?

But to do less than that, most people do like two or three. I'm like, well, how do you get by with that? But that, that's how.

• 55:54Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 55:54Jonny?

It's just, you can't have that. It was hard, hard to have that structure.

• 55:57Speaker 01

It is bizarre to think that most office structures, especially when you've got, like we've got a couple of friends who work in kind of like new,

• 56:06Speaker 01

new wave, Gen Y offices that are all open plan with like cool sound systems and this, that and the other.

• 56:11Jonny?

  Astratech on the walls.

• 56:12Speaker 01

Yeah. And all, all that I think is, all, all I think is put me in the quietest, smallest cubicle.

• 56:20Jonny?

  Take me to a cabin.

• 56:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:22Jonny?

  No wifi.

• 56:22Speaker 01

Yeah. And like put me, lock, lock me in there. And then for the five minutes during my thing.

• 56:27Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 56:28Speaker 01

Give me a yoga mat and give me some other people. Hey man, how's it going? Or here's a dog. Here's like loads of stimulus.

• 56:32Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 56:32Speaker 01

Like, great. And then I'm like.

• 56:34Speaker 03

  They're all waiting at the.

• 56:35Speaker 01

  I'm just great.

• 56:38Speaker 01

  And then back in.

• 56:40Jonny?

So I think the way the office should be managed is in the pomodora, the rhythm. So the, the, the five breaks and then a 15, five breaks then lunch.

• 56:46Speaker 03

We need to talk about this for the Cal Newport, um, deep work review. Where, where he, cause he slates open plan offices for just like the fact that, yeah, there's been open plan, there's a movement towards instant messaging and everything that's just completely degrading the sense of.

• 56:59Jonny?

What's insulting as well is when there's a culture that those people work late. And you're like, there is zero respect for anybody's time in this set, setup. Like.

• 57:08Speaker 03

  So true.

• 57:08Jonny?

  You take, you, you, you.

• 57:09Speaker 03

And they wouldn't need to work late if it wasn't for.

• 57:12Jonny?

So everyone should just at the start of the day, set out like, these are the tasks I'm going to do.

• 57:17Speaker 01

  Once I've done them.

• 57:18Jonny?

Once I've done them, I go home. And then you should be.

• 57:21Speaker 03

And leave me alone while I'm doing the tasks.

• 57:22Jonny?

Punished if you, if you are either under providing tasks or not completing the tasks you've set and rewarded if you're more productive than other people.

• 57:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 57:29Jonny?

Cause otherwise like, what is anybody doing?

• 57:31Speaker 01

  Well, it's this.

• 57:32Speaker 03

  Just like staring at shit.

• 57:34Speaker 01

One of the main problems with this is that you need to be able, and this is why you have pay bands, right? And unfortunately, there's a, there's like, I don't know what the particular

• 57:48Speaker 01

mind experiment would be, but it'll be similar to kind of like the prisoner's dilemma, where you've got, there'll be some people that'll do less and get dragged along. And there's some people that'll do more, and they will drag the others. But both of those people are on the same pay band. Essentially, everyone should be on, as far as I'm concerned, everyone that's a knowledge worker should be on performance-based pay. You're like, right, okay, if you can get your work done in this time, and if someone says, I work better from home, allow them to work from home.

• 58:14Speaker 03

Yeah, well, this is part of the four-hour work week idea of you convince your boss that if you can take a couple of days to work from home, and then you outperform your other days when you're working from home, you can then say, well, look, look at my, look at my numbers. I've been performing better on Thursday when I was off and working from home. So can I? And you were saying that the incentives are so misaligned at KPMG because you finish the, you finish the tasks for the day, and then you're just given more stuff, like you're rewarded for completing the work.

• 58:42Speaker 01

So the nine-to-five model is like, if you've done your work by three, you'll just be given more work. So and that's work that may have been allocated to someone else who's had a really unproductive day. So you're just, you're punished for being productive. But the biggest criticism I hear for this stuff is, yeah, but my job involves management or there's meetings and I need to communicate with people, but all that stuff could still be more outcome focused than it is.

• 59:06Speaker 03

So I'm perfect avatar for that. Like, a lot of my stuff's response.

• 59:12Speaker 01

  I mean, yeah, requiring.

• 59:13Speaker 03

We are literally just managing people, aren't you?

• 59:15Speaker 01

  Yeah, constantly.

• 59:17Speaker 03

Yeah, all the time. But even with that, like, I'll sit down with the lads and the boys have got, the boys are doing Pomodoro's now. So they're doing their uni recruitment and.

• 59:24Speaker 01

Uh the um revision and all that sort of stuff in in Pomodoro's, which is awesome. Um definitely one thing, and I'm gonna guess that you guys will stick to it, but I still stick to David Allen's two minute rule. Even when doing Pomodoro's, so if a task takes a long, I've extended mine to like three minutes. If a task is going to take less than three minutes to complete, complete it there and there, and even if I'm in a Pomodoro, I'll do it. Like, because I'm like, oh god, like if I try and slot this in, like where the fuck does it go?

• 59:53Jonny?

So a nice way to take that. And it's so if you're the the the rule, if you follow like Francesco Cisarello's like.

• 1:00:01Speaker 01

  The original Pomodoro.

• 1:00:02Jonny?

You protect the Pomodoro. That is the most important thing, like you do not interrupt a Pomodoro to do something else. So you note those things down. Something I find is really nice way to start the day is you have a list of like really easy. Two minute tasks and the first Pomodoro of the day is just like do do do do do and then like by half eight.

• 1:00:21Speaker 03

You do put them in a Pomodoro.

• 1:00:22Jonny?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:23Speaker 01

And then. What if they're what if they're urgent?

• 1:00:25Jonny?

Well, you have to just be an adult, I suppose, and just make it make assessments, but like.

• 1:00:31Speaker 03

We'll take a break, do the tasks before your next Pomodoro begins and then so you've delayed the next Pomodoro starting. But the risk is you get sucked in, like you start a two minute task. Quite often I'll start a task that I think will take two minutes and then two hours later you're like, oh.

• 1:00:45Jonny?

So I I have one that's that's related to this, so I'll do mine, so um all within the Pomodoro. So I feel like I've been, I must have been doing it for like at least five years in different type, there are different areas like revision and and other stuff. So the, I think the the best skill I think it allows you to to create is. You look at a to do list, so like I what I do is I'll look at my to do list and look at my day and think I'm gonna do these ten things today. And it gets to like half three and I've done two of the ten things and I'm like, oh fuck, I'm such a twat, like I'm having such a no product good day. And I'll maybe do four and just really be really annoyed at myself, but like the reality is between when you start work and when you finish work.

• 1:01:29Jonny?

There's a there's a certain amount of of focus time you can spend and like there there are hours, but you need. To take breaks to maintain that focus. So you look at that to do list and you say, right, today I'm going to do, I have time to do ten pomodoro's. So this task, how many pomodoro's is that going to take me? Three. All right, that one's going to take me two. That's my day filled. And then you have a way to actually assess at the end, like I thought that was going to take me three, it took me four, right? Or that, that I thought it was going to take me two to me one. So actually you get better at looking at that's a, that's a task and that's.

• 1:02:04Speaker 03

That's a three pom task, that's two pom.

• 1:02:06Jonny?

And you just see things as, oh, that's four pomodoro's, two pomodoro's.

• 1:02:10Speaker 03

So I, so I've started doing that in my focus matrix.

• 1:02:12Jonny?

Right, look at them and say.

• 1:02:14Speaker 03

So in, in my focus matrix tasks, I have square brackets with three or two or whatever after the task so that I know.

• 1:02:21Jonny?

Then you just build your day and then you can, you can build a day plan just out of pomodoro's. And then you've got a, a map for the day.

• 1:02:27Speaker 03

You might have some tasks that are like fifteen pomodoro's.

• 1:02:29Jonny?

There's no better feeling than doing a three pomodoro task and two pomodoro's, just because you're, you're ahead.

• 1:02:36Jonny?

  What's that?

• 1:02:40Jonny?

Yeah, if I pre, I have a title in my wallet, you know, the thing that the GPS tracking thing.

• 1:02:44Speaker 03

It only goes off during podcasts.

• 1:02:45Jonny?

If I press on my wallet, which is here with my elbow, it has a feature that allows me to find my wallet by squeezing it. So that's what that was.

• 1:02:53Speaker 01

It allows you to find your wallet by squeezing it.

• 1:02:55Speaker 03

  Squeezing the wallet.

• 1:02:59Jonny?

It's annoying. It was good initially, but it's annoying now.

• 1:03:01Speaker 01

One of the first criticisms or one of the first arguments that Darren had, so my business partner is the perfect avatar for someone who is genetically predisposed to be a fantastic businessman, incredibly shrewd and like he eighty twenties my eighty twenty from this. Um, so he just doesn't subscribe to the vast majority of the stuff, but some of the things like the trackpad speed and the automatic car, a few of the bits, he's kind of trickled down. Um, but the first criticism he had was, well, that means out of every half an hour, I'm losing five minutes. I'm like.

• 1:03:32Speaker 03

You'd use more if you tried to work all the way through.

• 1:03:34Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, again, it's it's simply a lack of perspective.

• 1:03:38Jonny?

It's like someone who does five three one thinks they don't need to deload.

• 1:03:41Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:03:41Jonny?

  You're wrong. You're absolutely wrong.

• 1:03:43Speaker 01

  And you'll be.

• 1:03:44Jonny?

Except if I kept five three one. Like, the system will prove you wrong eventually when it crushes you.

• 1:03:48Speaker 03

  That is such a.

• 1:03:48Jonny?

And Pomodoro is exactly the same thing. Like, you get, you're twenty five minutes into your day and it goes.

• 1:03:52Speaker 03

  Oh, I'm dead hard.

• 1:03:53Jonny?

You're like, no, no, no, I'll not take it. Suddenly, it's an hour later, you've lost all structure. You're on YouTube, you don't know why. So just take the fucking break, like, follow the structure.

• 1:04:05Speaker 01

They're like the analogy of like, oh, I'm fucking hard as fuck. It's so correct. Have you ever done it where you're like, I feel mint, like, Command Shift, Command Shift, uh, S, Command Shift B, which is like, skip this current break intervals, start this current work.

• 1:04:22Speaker 03

I love that you're on the keyboard shortcut for it. It's been so happy.

• 1:04:24Speaker 01

And I'm just like, yeah, fuck this. Watch me go double up, like.

• 1:04:29Jonny?

And then you fail, don't you?

• 1:04:30Speaker 01

  Every fucking time.

• 1:04:32Jonny?

Yeah, so another mini hack is I have been doing, so we've mentioned Anton Creel on this course quite, on this, on this podcast quite a few times. So he has a very thorough course to learn how to trade. So I look at that and think, right, this is, there are, there are twenty eight modules here. So each of them is probably an hour, like, that's, okay, that's a lot of content of like, it's not like, so this is how you get motivated. And this is like, okay, so we'll hedge out the alpha with the beta. Like, fucking hell, like, this is, this is a degree, basically. So all I do is when my Pomodoro break starts, I, my AirPods are still in, stop my music,

• 1:05:15Jonny?

change tab, play, start the Anton video, and I'll like get up and like make sure I'm away from my desk. But that allows me to do an hour of, of a course I'm trying to do, and I don't even notice it. So within my breaks, and it, it, it's not quite, I can't do it all day because it is quite cognitively demanding, but it's very different to what I've been doing. So it feels like.

• 1:05:34Speaker 03

  Enough of a frame shift.

• 1:05:35Jonny?

You can come back to it, like, oh, I was doing this. And especially when it's interesting as well.

• 1:05:40Speaker 01

I don't think I'd be able to do that each time.

• 1:05:42Jonny?

See, probably make for the first four or five of the day. Get it done, but, and then.

• 1:05:46Speaker 01

  Run out of gas.

• 1:05:47Jonny?

  Cut video.

• 1:05:48Speaker 01

It's mad, like, when you, when you actually, like, I have to have phone down, but my, my workplace environment design now is quite good, so it's like phones away, or phones in another room. And I'm controlling like wirelessly through AirPods.

• 1:06:01Jonny?

You treat yourself like a child, don't you?

• 1:06:03Speaker 01

Yeah, that's exactly what, that's exactly.

• 1:06:05Jonny?

  Have you got cold turkey?

• 1:06:06Speaker 01

I don't need it. I don't need it for my laptop.

• 1:06:09Jonny?

Sounds like someone who needs cold turkey.

• 1:06:10Speaker 01

I don't need it for my laptop.

• 1:06:12Jonny?

That's like, you know, I don't have an alcohol problem.

• 1:06:14Speaker 03

Has that been one of our life hacks before?

• 1:06:15Speaker 01

Yeah, we've done, we have done it.

• 1:06:17Jonny?

So the other thing I do at the start of the Pomodoro, you have a different setup, but I just do click a little, and what even is it?

• 1:06:24Speaker 03

  The little timer thing.

• 1:06:25Jonny?

The little logo for cold turkey.

• 1:06:27Speaker 03

  Oh, it's a turkey.

• 1:06:28Jonny?

Oh, it's a turkey. Click the turkey. Start, start blog, WhatsApp and iMessage, twenty five minutes, email, twenty five minutes. And then I, and then it goes, when I try and press it, the number of times I go to like open iMessage reflectively or go and open email.

• 1:06:42Speaker 03

And just knocks it out of your hand.

• 1:06:45Speaker 03

  It's so brutal.

• 1:06:46Jonny?

Like, look how fickle you are, you dickhead.

• 1:06:48Speaker 03

It may as well be like you pick up your phone.

• 1:06:52Jonny?

You just don't realise, like my default, if something's a bit hard, I was like, oh, just check email. And before I know, I know what's happened.

• 1:07:02Speaker 01

Yeah, it's, you've been electrocuted. Right, Yusuf, what have you got?

• 1:07:06Speaker 03

Now, this is one volunteered from Benny, who is the wonderful audio man who does all of the, um.

• 1:07:15Speaker 01

  The podcasts.

• 1:07:16Speaker 03

For us, uh, and also our, our good friend as well. So he has said, life hacks tip, no, the reason I'm.

• 1:07:24Speaker 03

Prefacing with the fact that it's him that suggested this is that this scares the hell out of me as a life hack.

• 1:07:29Jonny?

  Okay.

• 1:07:29Speaker 03

Life hack tip, Chrome extension Tab Wrangler, it'll alter, it'll autoclose tabs. That are open after a period of defined inactivity. Essentially, use it or lose it. Stop procrastinating with tabs as a to do list.

• 1:07:44Jonny?

  That is fantastic.

• 1:07:47Speaker 03

  It really scares me.

• 1:07:48Speaker 01

That makes me, that makes my way, do you want to go inside?

• 1:07:50Jonny?

Same. So, so what's, what, talk me through your objection.

• 1:07:54Speaker 03

Sometimes I have tabs open as permanent reference. I know I should set up like an Alfred shortcut maybe for it, but.

• 1:08:00Speaker 01

Why don't you serve them as as an Evernote file?

• 1:08:03Speaker 03

Sometimes they're like Wiki websites or whatever where you need like sort of BMJ website.

• 1:08:08Speaker 01

I I always have my Chrome always has first one is to do list. Which is on a cloud document, which I I know you guys will hate, but that's a separate point. And then the second, the second one is the shared um ad spends uh Google Drive file.

• 1:08:25Speaker 03

This comes from us over engineering Google to make it use it as apps that it's not designed for.

• 1:08:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:08:31Speaker 03

And I know it probably you might be listening and thinking, oh, that sounds like a bunch of excuses, guys, like, just suck it up.

• 1:08:36Speaker 01

Or you you I think more people will be listening and thinking, what the fuck are they on about? Yeah. Why are you so bothered about saving five minutes per day? Why are you so bothered about having a cloud based like ad spend?

• 1:08:49Speaker 03

  Your stuff that you can't.

• 1:08:49Speaker 01

What you don't understand. Person who's watching is that this is everything to us, okay?

• 1:08:56Jonny?

It's also everything to them, they just don't realise it.

• 1:08:58Speaker 03

  It is?

• 1:08:59Jonny?

  It's like when you.

• 1:08:59Speaker 03

This is why you need to listen to life hacks.

• 1:09:01Jonny?

Every everyone has a bodybuilding goal, they just don't realise it. This is exactly the same thing.

• 1:09:06Speaker 03

Yeah, that that's a real bugbear for me. Everyone does have, you might, oh, I'm not interested in bodybuilding. Yes, you are.

• 1:09:14Speaker 03

You want to be less fat and you want more muscle. Just because you don't want to be Ronnie Coleman doesn't mean that you don't have.

• 1:09:20Speaker 01

You don't want to be Ronnie Coleman now.

• 1:09:21Jonny?

So so Ronald was right when he said.

• 1:09:22Speaker 03

  Ronald.

• 1:09:23Jonny?

Eh, but I want to be a bodybuilder.

• 1:09:25Speaker 01

Nobody want to lift any heavy ass weight.

• 1:09:27Speaker 03

  They don't.

• 1:09:27Jonny?

It never has to be a more true statement.

• 1:09:29Speaker 01

Ron Ron shouldn't have lifted the heavy ass weight either, should he? He watched the Netflix.

• 1:09:33Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:34Speaker 01

  So you watched it?

• 1:09:34Speaker 03

  No.

• 1:09:35Speaker 01

Oh, man, it's just a bit harrowing.

• 1:09:37Jonny?

Well, he's he's like, barely walk and stuff. It's quite sad, actually.

• 1:09:40Speaker 01

He's on the top end uh dose of those real big dick uh painkillers, the oxys.

• 1:09:48Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:09:49Speaker 01

Yeah, he's on like the thirties, thirties or forties of them like three times a day now.

• 1:09:53Speaker 03

He's just immensely positive about the whole thing.

• 1:09:55Speaker 01

  And he's still training?

• 1:09:56Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:57Speaker 03

He's he's still going into that fucking whatever it is powerhouse gym or whatever it's called.

• 1:10:02Jonny?

She does tricep extensions and shit.

• 1:10:04Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:10:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:10:04Speaker 03

Does like uh feet up bench press? He can't.

• 1:10:07Speaker 01

I think his, uh, people think he's a big caricature, but I think he operates, operated and still operated a very hard.

• 1:10:14Speaker 03

Oh, he's a very smart guy, yeah.

• 1:10:16Speaker 01

But all like, who the fuck is about a double seven hundred pounds squat is going like, woo.

• 1:10:21Speaker 03

He puts on a yellow banana and does walking lunges down the road just for.

• 1:10:25Speaker 01

Like when you're still not taking it seriously, when you're doubling a seven hundred pound, a three hundred kilo squat plus.

• 1:10:32Speaker 03

  It's brilliant.

• 1:10:32Speaker 01

And it's still just a joke to you.

• 1:10:34Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:10:35Speaker 01

What's yours? It's eight hundred pounds.

• 1:10:37Speaker 03

  Solid ass.

• 1:10:37Speaker 01

Solid, solid ass pounds. What was, what was your one just then?

• 1:10:41Speaker 03

Mine was, uh, the Tab Wrangler.

• 1:10:44Speaker 01

  Tab Wrangler.

• 1:10:45Speaker 03

  Tab Wrangler.

• 1:10:46Speaker 01

I, for anyone else who is running a podcast that has life hacks on, a life hack for your life hacks podcast is to do your show notes while you, while you're doing this.

• 1:10:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:10:54Speaker 01

Um, oh, what else? So we've already spoken about this, but I want to bring it up again and I'm going to enjoy doing this as well. I think we need to revisit some of them later down the road. Cause we're getting new viewers.

• 1:11:03Speaker 03

I bet there's ones from Life Hacks one that we need to look back on.

• 1:11:05Speaker 01

Oh, do we definitely do? And this is one that I've recently fallen in love with and it's yours, Flume.

• 1:11:11Speaker 03

  Oh, yes, Chris.

• 1:11:12Speaker 01

It's just, if you, if you need to use Instagram, you shouldn't be using it on your phone. My argument to our boys is, and I, I gave them a sit down about productivity the other day in the office. And I said essentially, if your phone is out while you're at work, you're not doing work. And if you're not doing work while you're at work, you might as well be at home. So if you get your phone out, just go home. Like. Yeah, you can use iMessage on your laptop, WhatsApp, web, Facebook, Twitter. And with Flume, like the, the one, the last bastion of why I need to get my phone out was that. Because it's like, you're not, mate, don't fucking bullshit me. You're not doing work on Snapchat. Like, so.

• 1:11:52Speaker 01

The, so it's just a, a very nice interface for Instagram on your laptop. You can post, if you pay like five pounds for the pro version, you can even post photos with all of the editing filters and all the rest of this stuff. I have no idea because it's fucking not certified by Instagram. But all of your credentials are held securely. You can have multiple accounts to log into.

• 1:12:14Speaker 03

Cause it used to be that the, the problem with these Instagram apps is that you could only view and you couldn't post from.

• 1:12:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:12:19Speaker 03

Laptop. Flume does allow you to, you can just drag photos in from your finder.

• 1:12:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:12:24Speaker 03

The only thing you can't do is schedule, but there are other apps that you can do for that. But this allows you here to schedule, to, sorry, to post out photos, videos, all of the functions of.

• 1:12:32Speaker 01

Do comments, reply to DMs, find people.

• 1:12:36Speaker 03

The frame, you know, when you post a video and you select the like the still frame, you can do all that.

• 1:12:40Speaker 01

Literally, it's it's it's the only thing that you can't do, and they they do need to sort it, is it doesn't have what it classes as support for temporary messages, uh support for uh temporary disappearing messages, i.e. anything on stories. So you can't upload to your story, view stories or respond, see uh replies which are responses to yours or other people's stories. And for me, that probably constitutes about thirty to fifty percent of my Instagram DMs. Like, you put your stories up throughout the day and you get responses to that.

• 1:13:11Speaker 03

It's frustrating because you just get like a message that says unsupported.

• 1:13:14Speaker 01

unsupported, which which is a little bit annoying, but for instance, if you need to like, one of the underrated tools that people who have big followings on Instagram should use is essentially like direct marketing or below the line marketing to their followers, because all of them have given you access to their inbox. But the reason that you wouldn't do it is it's so so fucking arduous to go through, to navigate through, you're on the app, you're swiping backwards and forwards.

• 1:13:40Speaker 03

Instagram message because you've been like, oh, I've got I've got a fat thumb and I've got to try and.

• 1:13:43Speaker 01

Open it up and this and the other, but with this, you can just have, especially if you've got Alfred and you've got a big fat clipboard, open up a bunch of conversations, go through, hey, man, like, so I've got a list of people that I know have particular interests. I've got a buddy called Ben who's in America, so whenever I have a podcast, it's about physics that I need to put out, so I can just navigate to him. Here's a link. I've got it all pre-saved in there.

• 1:14:04Speaker 03

And the keyboard shortcuts within the app as well.

• 1:14:06Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:14:06Speaker 03

Command five, six, whatever for notifications.

• 1:14:09Speaker 01

So another thing that you can do, which is unbelievable for Flume as well, which I wish you could do for the actual real Instagram app is you can get rid of the different areas. Um, so I've got rid of my newsfeed. So you can actually get rid of that particular thing from it. So there's no newsfeed tab, there's no discover tab.

• 1:14:28Speaker 03

  So you just have messages.

• 1:14:29Speaker 01

Search, messages and my profile, three across the board.

• 1:14:33Speaker 03

Uh, I don't know you can do that.

• 1:14:34Speaker 01

So it's just no browsing, there's no like explore, there's no discover, there's no um newsfeed and it's just.

• 1:14:41Jonny?

  The productive stuff.

• 1:14:42Speaker 01

  Just my shit.

• 1:14:42Speaker 03

Have you used repost as well? So you can right click on someone else's photo.

• 1:14:47Speaker 01

Yeah, it's got an internal, it's got an internal repost function, so you don't even need that. But yeah, Flume.

• 1:14:51Speaker 03

It maintains the original quality, it copies the caption over, it's like, it's so.

• 1:14:55Jonny?

It's the opposite to what most people use Instagram for, isn't it?

• 1:14:58Speaker 03

That's true. I suppose you have to be an Instagram like.

• 1:15:00Jonny?

You have to try and be building a brand, I suppose, for this stuff to matter, because most people are on Instagram. To consume it. But you, I mean, if you're on Instagram to consume, as you're also on this channel, that leads me to my life hack.

• 1:15:12Speaker 03

I suppose ironically, they're using Instagram more mindfully than we are because they're just enjoying Instagram for the purpose of Instagram.

• 1:15:18Jonny?

They don't know that they're in a fucking matrix, do they? Like, you are wasting your life.

• 1:15:22Speaker 03

They're getting the inherent enjoyment for it.

• 1:15:24Jonny?

So Cal Newport, who's written Deep Work. Which we're about to review. Just written a book called Digital Minimalism. So I think the three, arguably four, three books that everybody should read are Atomic Habits, Deep Work, and this. So Deep Work is the ability to focus deeply on a, on a task, which is, he calls like the.

• 1:15:47Speaker 03

  The superpower.

• 1:15:48Jonny?

The superpower of this generation, yeah. And then Building Habits at Last, James Clear's book is incredible for that. And then the stuff that gets in the way of that is the one notification. And Cal Newport has then applied the same, very similar framework to basically auditing your digital life. So the book, I mean, I'm about halfway through. He basically talks about um evaluating what is it you're trying to achieve with a piece of software or an app? Is that the best way to achieve that outcome? So like, people say, oh, um, I like Facebook because I get to see my cousin's baby photos. Replace that with call your cousin once a month and the, the connection will be better, the, the.

• 1:16:32Speaker 03

Have a better relationship with your cousin.

• 1:16:34Jonny?

Yeah. So don't like, these platforms are designed to suck you in, keep you there, get you to, to stay on that screen. So don't, don't give them that unless it's absolutely worth it. And go through a thirty day digital detox and then evaluate what you missed and why.

• 1:16:51Speaker 03

Supposed to know the impact as well. Like.

• 1:16:54Jonny?

  I am.

• 1:16:54Speaker 03

Because a lot of people will say like, oh, well, I've used Facebook and it's fine. Like, I don't see the big problem. If you get rescue time and just run it for a month, don't look at it until the end of the month and then look back and see how much time you've absolutely pissed away on.

• 1:17:06Jonny?

And screen time on your phone as well.

• 1:17:09Speaker 03

  Then you're like, oh.

• 1:17:10Jonny?

So here's an interesting, an interesting thing I did, used to do with my laptop. I don't do it anymore, actually, is I would total. So in the Pomodoro book, he recommends track your Pomodoro's and like a log. So I did it when I initially started them and I would compare time on rescue time, which is screen time in a week to Pomodoro time. So how much time and it was like ten. No, no, it was it was like ten plus hours across a week.

• 1:17:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:17:35Jonny?

And I'm just like on my laptop.

• 1:17:37Speaker 01

Yeah. What the fuck am I doing?

• 1:17:39Jonny?

I I can watch five films.

• 1:17:41Speaker 03

But is that not times time like in between Pomodoro's and?

• 1:17:43Jonny?

  A little bit of it.

• 1:17:44Speaker 01

Yeah, actually, yeah, there's gonna be a number of, there's gonna be an hour a day.

• 1:17:48Jonny?

Oh, no, actually, no, I tracked a class of Pomodoro's thirty minutes.

• 1:17:52Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:17:52Speaker 01

  That's very clever.

• 1:17:53Jonny?

So that's so that's just, so I see two Pomodoro's as an hour of work.

• 1:17:57Speaker 01

  Uh yeah.

• 1:17:58Jonny?

  Essentially.

• 1:17:58Speaker 01

Yeah, okay, um, um, that digital minimalism, so, um.

• 1:18:03Jonny?

  Frightening, scary.

• 1:18:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:18:04Jonny?

Most people won't do that's the thing.

• 1:18:06Speaker 01

How how um ruthless, because Cal Newport is like, you don't need to be on social media to build a brand. You don't need to be like, I've seen, is it a TED Talk that he gave?

• 1:18:15Jonny?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:18:16Speaker 01

Where it's like about how and these are the common reasons as to why people say that they can't get off social media.

• 1:18:20Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 1:18:21Speaker 01

  I'm like, fucking hell, Cal.

• 1:18:23Jonny?

It's like it presses your buttons.

• 1:18:24Speaker 01

  Fifty Cal, like headshot.

• 1:18:28Jonny?

Because he he uses an example of a guy who's like trying to build his like, he's he's a guitarist, he's trying to build his brand on social media. And just lists reasons as to why, like, the guy's excuses, yeah. Even Anton Creel, right, has a section where he's like, get rid of your smartphone. I don't care what your reasons are, just get rid of your smartphone.

• 1:18:47Speaker 03

I use a Nokia eighty two ten and it's.

• 1:18:50Jonny?

  It does SMS.

• 1:18:51Speaker 03

It stores fifty numbers and SMS.

• 1:18:54Jonny?

But he tweets a lot, so he has his wife manages Instagram.

• 1:18:58Speaker 01

Yeah, he tweets a lot though.

• 1:18:59Jonny?

He but he tweets, so his rule is, um.

• 1:19:02Speaker 03

Does he write them on a bit of paper or something?

• 1:19:03Jonny?

Sched like do all of your work on Facebook, Twitter, once a week, schedule it.

• 1:19:08Speaker 01

Impossible. You think he's doing it. For you it's impossible. For him it's impossible. You think he's uploading stuff live? He's quote, he's quote tweeting stuff that's occurred within. Maybe, maybe, maybe he's violating his own rule. Uh, he, he must be like, cause he's too responsive. Right. Online, like he can't schedule a quote tweet from something. It is. Fuck you. It is possible. He does have a media team. So it is possible that they're doing that. Cause he has a guy who manages. In his, in, in, it is unequivocally in his tone. And it, okay, we've, we've, we've rumbled it. Yeah, but then, I don't know, like, it seems to me especially like, there's that quote, um, no one is ever too busy to tell you how busy they are.

• 1:19:47Speaker 01

It's like, no one is ever, so few people are too digitally minimal to not care about being on Twitter. Like Naval Ravikant, like, bro. Hmm. You are without a doubt, one of the biggest dicks that I've ever seen in my life. Spend a lot of time on Twitter still though, don't you? So Twitter just doesn't interest me at all. Me neither. It's, and what, George McKeel. A lot of dick swinging. Yeah, George McKeel who'll be listening is, is, he's leveraging off this, right? Like he's leveraging off this hyper aphorism. Like three hundred and sixty character life fucking advice stuff that's going on. And like for the people that like to consume that, then cool, but I've got a couple of problems with it. First one is there's no context. And it's like, fucking, why does an inspirational quote not change your life? It's like, well, because time and attention.

• 1:20:32Speaker 01

Hmm. Like, cause it matters. And then the other thing is, it, it, the, the dick measuring thing or the dick swinging thing, like it just becomes. Everything's so pithy. And it's like, it, you can just tweet stuff that doesn't have to be like. Why I'm better than you and this is, you know. Change your world and like, mate, like Twitter was, well, I mean, it's an innovative way to use a platform. I far, I'd just far rather like, listen to those people in a long form, long form podcast or like buy their book or.

• 1:21:04Jonny?

Like you were saying the other day, the books are the the value you get from a book for like five quid, seven.

• 1:21:09Speaker 03

It's absolutely incredible. It's it's a person's life work and they've spent years editing and writing it out and formulating their ideas.

• 1:21:15Jonny?

They should be like a hundred quid.

• 1:21:16Speaker 03

And then you read a tweet that's just been bashed out or like a, yeah, you know, it's just, it's so.

• 1:21:20Jonny?

Gets read by twenty five thousand people.

• 1:21:22Speaker 03

  It's crazy.

• 1:21:23Jonny?

And the the thing I suppose that you don't, that certainly before we started using these things for business, that you don't see as a user, is that the way the platforms work is i- i- i- encourages a race to the bottom with clickbait.

• 1:21:36Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:21:37Jonny?

To for people to get seen on the feed.

• 1:21:39Speaker 03

So so Tristan Harris was saying, Tristan was saying how the emotion of outrage is algorithmically the most successful thing for.

• 1:21:49Jonny?

So you the the the second, the the only thing which comes second to it is like hyper-agreement.

• 1:21:55Speaker 03

  Okay, oh, yeah.

• 1:21:56Jonny?

So you end up either with things which superbly support your view.

• 1:21:59Speaker 03

Which is why, so like the the anti-vaxxer groups become these crazy circle jerks of like, you know, someone, someone posted, I I thing I'm not seeing you on the screenshot, someone said, oh, like, I've I've been diagnosed with sepsis and like I'm critically ill. What what shall I do? I don't want to take antibiotics. And someone was commenting being like, oh, yeah, just take high high dose vitamin C and you'll be, it's like, that is fatal advice.

• 1:22:25Jonny?

Because you're in. You've killed your friends.

• 1:22:27Speaker 03

Yeah, but because you're in the echo chamber of like, oh, yeah, screw antibiotics, that's just big pharma trying. It's so you end up with these like pockets of people that are just hyper agreeing with each other and it becomes.

• 1:22:38Jonny?

There was something of a a woman, did you send it to me? With the kids, a woman whose kid had a meningitis or something, yeah, I didn't get him vaccinated and he's got the disease.

• 1:22:46Speaker 03

What what do I do? Yeah.

• 1:22:48Jonny?

  Fuck off.

• 1:22:48Speaker 03

  It's so, it's.

• 1:22:49Jonny?

Like, so don't don't build this argument and then backtrack.

• 1:22:53Speaker 03

The doctor, the doctor I was working with yesterday said that she was on a plane and someone um had basically a sudden onset severe pain in the in the like lower chest, upper upper stomach area, which could be a number of things that are obviously quite quite quite dangerous and severe. She went over to attend to the patient and she felt this person just like standing behind her. And she was like, no, no, I you you need to uh you need to get some chilies, you need to get some chilies for it. And she was like, I'm sorry, what? She's like, I'm a herbalist, um he needs chilies because she was like. Okay, this guy's got a bleed in his stomach potentially and you wanna give him chilies. Also, we're on a plane, like, where do you expect?

• 1:23:35Speaker 03

Do you want to go to the kitchen and get some chilies? Like, go away. I, I, you know, I appreciate you wanting to help, but, so.

• 1:23:41Jonny?

Brian, Brian Cox said that in his presentation, someone said like, I can't remember the question. It was something like, do you think there's a downside to science or something? And he went, yeah, I mean, if you misinterpret things, and for example, you know, you think vaccines are bad or something like that, then, then yes, that is bad. But I just thought like the way that he just, he's just not even giving it time of day. Like, it's not even.

• 1:24:01Speaker 01

  Have you listened to him?

• 1:24:01Jonny?

  I better be careful.

• 1:24:02Speaker 01

Have you listened to him on Joe Rogan?

• 1:24:03Jonny?

  No.

• 1:24:04Speaker 01

I want to, man. He's, he is, I'd forgotten how much of a motherfucker he is. And you don't, because you presume that, like, fucking Carlo Rovelli, or some of these more kind of backroom physicists. Uh, uh, and like you, you discredit Neil deGrasse Tyson just because of how like prolific he is. You presume, like, you think Bear Grylls isn't hard. You're like, no, Bear Grylls would fuck you up.

• 1:24:30Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:30Speaker 01

  Like, and.

• 1:24:31Jonny?

  Cause he's so mainstream.

• 1:24:32Speaker 01

Yeah, and you forget, like, uh, that's the equivalent of being the best in your field. The equivalent of being the cream of the crop. And yeah, maybe like, if you niche down within to one area of bears, like, like, survivalism, he might not be as good, or fucking hood building, he might not be as good as this guy, or, you know, particle physics, or like, whatever, like astrobiology, um, what's his face might not be quite so good. But like, if you want to take a fucking broad spectrum view, he's got like, it's a cosmic sized schlong, isn't it?

• 1:25:03Jonny?

Yeah, yeah. The thing that was mental about it was, it's Friday night, and there's a stadium, or not stadium, uh, uh, an arena full of people listening to a physicist explain spacetime. And like, as I was leaving, so like, I, I'm sat, there's a moment where you, I realised, like, this is not gonna be a relaxing night, like, two hours. And you go from this to like. Right, better pay attention here, like fucking hell, like thi- this is not.

• 1:25:27Speaker 01

  Roller coaster on.

• 1:25:28Speaker 03

It's lovely that it exists on a large scale and it's not become a kind of fringe thing.

• 1:25:33Jonny?

I look around and you think, all these people are here to listen to that bloke explain space time and like, I find that really interesting, but I, I. I can't believe that I'm.

• 1:25:42Speaker 03

That there's enough of you to.

• 1:25:43Jonny?

Majority and then as you're leaving, you hear people go, well, I didn't understand any of that. But they, they still like, oh.

• 1:25:48Speaker 03

  This is trying.

• 1:25:48Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:25:49Jonny?

What the fuck is going on?

• 1:25:51Speaker 01

The, the, the Brian Cox thing makes a little bit more sense to me than the Peterson, Sam Harris, Eric Weinstein thing. So like, how many people were there? Ten thousand? Twenty thousand?

• 1:26:02Jonny?

Uh, no, well, I don't know.

• 1:26:03Speaker 01

  Five thousand?

• 1:26:04Jonny?

I don't know, that, I feel like you're the bit, sort of person that.

• 1:26:07Speaker 01

Well, yeah, but I can't, I don't know how many, I don't know how many stands were open. I don't know how far are you taking the.

• 1:26:11Speaker 03

Yeah, if, if there's anyone I trust to look at a crowd of people.

• 1:26:13Speaker 01

I could tell you, I could tell you, but I don't know how much. So anyway.

• 1:26:16Jonny?

It was, it was about, it was, it was a little way off the end and there was seating all the way up and in the centre.

• 1:26:21Speaker 01

Right. So was he at the very, very end of the Metro Radio Arena?

• 1:26:24Jonny?

  No.

• 1:26:24Speaker 01

  Right, halfway?

• 1:26:26Jonny?

  A little bit past halfway.

• 1:26:27Speaker 01

Right, okay, so that'll be, okay, so that'll be probably the same as that for Cirque du Soleil, which would be like.

• 1:26:33Speaker 03

I wish you got pulled up onto the stage for.

• 1:26:35Speaker 01

Got made to go up on stage and dressed up as a woman, yeah. Um, yeah, in front of a few thousand people. So I reckon there's maybe, let's say that there's five thousand people at his show, might be more, might actually be.

• 1:26:43Jonny?

  We'll pay fifty quid.

• 1:26:44Speaker 01

Yeah, so I mean, that, but that's crazy. But when me and George went to go see Jordan Peterson, like, I, I get Brian Cox. Just a little bit more.

• 1:26:53Speaker 03

  When he's on TV.

• 1:26:54Speaker 01

He's been on mainstream, he's been on mainstream TV, there's a big audio visual element to it, like it, it's a glorified roller coaster.

• 1:27:01Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:02Speaker 01

Jordan Peterson was him and his massive fucking spindly fingers, just. Talking about archetypes and cooling everyone in the crowd. His fan hands.

• 1:27:17Jonny?

And how many people were there?

• 1:27:18Speaker 01

Three thousand, between two and three thousand.

• 1:27:20Speaker 03

  And all eagerly wanting to.

• 1:27:22Jonny?

Have you heard Jordan Peterson break down his income?

• 1:27:25Speaker 01

No. Where is it? It's on YouTube.

• 1:27:28Jonny?

So there's a video where he gets interviewed by a French reporter.

• 1:27:30Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:27:31Jonny?

  You've seen that?

• 1:27:32Speaker 03

  There's a bit of a dick, actually.

• 1:27:33Jonny?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:27:34Speaker 01

Trying to trigger a little bit.

• 1:27:35Jonny?

Yeah, so he, he, the French reporter asks him to expose his finances.

• 1:27:39Speaker 03

Hmm. You're like, okay, I will, sure.

• 1:27:42Jonny?

Um, he's got pretty big business for what I assume is a, like, him and maybe one or two other people.

• 1:27:50Speaker 01

Well, future, future author in suite and, uh, and.

• 1:27:52Jonny?

So I think he's making like, he's basically making a million quid a year off Patreon.

• 1:27:57Speaker 01

  Yeah, well, not anymore.

• 1:27:59Jonny?

Not anymore, but at the time of the video he was.

• 1:28:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:28:01Jonny?

Um, and then like he went through, uh, book sales and events and stuff like that.

• 1:28:06Speaker 01

  Terrifying.

• 1:28:07Jonny?

It's big numbers, like much bigger than I was expecting.

• 1:28:09Speaker 01

So the fu- the funny thing about that, Joe Rogan alludes to it all the time, is that he says, like, the left fucked with the wrong person. Like, if you were gonna pick someone to fuck, to not fuck with.

• 1:28:21Jonny?

  Hmm.

• 1:28:21Speaker 01

It would be Jordan Peterson. Like, okay, we're gonna just, like, poke this frog and see what happens.

• 1:28:27Jonny?

They picked the venomous one, didn't they?

• 1:28:29Speaker 01

And you're like, oh my god, this frog, this frog's turned into probably, what's he worth now? Maybe like ten, tw- twenty mil? Probably more.

• 1:28:36Speaker 03

See, and it wouldn't have happened unless the initial.

• 1:28:38Speaker 01

Oh, it was, well, yeah, yeah. And you're like, oh my god. And you're just watching him grow into this huge fucking towering, like. Yeah, monster, it's grown fine. And he can fly, this leviathan comes out over the top of you. He's got these huge fingers, these spindly fucking fingers, and he's waving them around. And you're like, oh my god, now he's rich. Oh shit, now he's left, now he's left Patreon. And you're like, when he starts up his own version of Subscribe.

• 1:29:05Speaker 03

Left Patreon because his dick's too big. It's just like, and there's a grim on his shoulder.

• 1:29:09Speaker 01

Him and Sam Harris are gonna start up their own version of Subscribe Star or Patreon. Like, when that happens, they're gonna be taking a percentage of everyone that moves over there. Everyone fucking loves them.

• 1:29:19Jonny?

So this is something that Garrett White, who I imagine will not have been on yet.

• 1:29:24Speaker 01

He will have probably, well, maybe, maybe.

• 1:29:25Jonny?

So something that he spoke, spoke about with regards to, like, trying to get a message to people. It's like people try and do charity events and things like that, but like what really makes a difference is the bloke with ten million quid.

• 1:29:39Jonny?

And like you just can't argue with that because like you can do whatever you want and like pat bags at Morrison's but if there's a bloke with 10 million quid who wants to get a message out, he's going to win every single day. And so as Jordan Peterson progressively gets richer, it's going to be harder and harder.

• 1:29:56Speaker 01

  To shut him off.

• 1:29:56Speaker 03

If he starts putting paid traffic behind stuff.

• 1:29:58Jonny?

Or just, just the stuff he can do.

• 1:30:00Speaker 01

Can you imagine, can you imagine if Jordan starts using ClickFunnels?

• 1:30:03Jonny?

Just pulls the big red lever. With Russell Brunson going like.

• 1:30:09Jonny?

God, that's all. Okay, he, he's also, he loves a fight, doesn't he? So like when that interview with the French reporter, like the French reporter gives him a bit of shit. And he just shuts him down. You just think.

• 1:30:19Speaker 01

Oh, yeah, don't poke a bear. So he said, he says this really, this really interesting thing. I think it was on Joe Rogan again as well. Where he was talking about, um, how he, he's happy to have the fight, but he, his natural proclivity isn't to that. And he says it takes him a couple of days to recover. So he spoke specifically about the GQ interview. With the woman which was like, Kathy Newman got sent away, um, trained for a while. Like came back with a two 20 deadlift and, and, um, and like that she had notes with her and they didn't give him a, a microphone. It's for GQ.

• 1:30:59Speaker 03

  Microaggression.

• 1:31:00Jonny?

She just didn't realise that it was like Yuri Belkin meets Tom Martin.

• 1:31:03Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah. It was, it was UFC one all over again. And, um, so he had that and he's referring to that and he goes, um. It took me like two days to kind of recover from that because the, and you are right, like. He's able to keep his cool to a degree that like I've never ever seen anyone like even Sam Harris lost his shit. Like he, he, he, he does it all.

• 1:31:27Jonny?

He's just been very conscious of the fact that he lost his shit.

• 1:31:30Speaker 01

Yeah, he'll watch himself. Have you heard, have you heard the story? I'm just segueing massively here. Have you heard the story about when Sam Harris ended up getting, um. Uh, like two articles came out about him at the same time. It was like two hit pieces. He was on holiday in Hawaii.

• 1:31:44Speaker 03

No. Oh, and he was with his family.

• 1:31:45Speaker 01

Yeah, he's with his family and he just torpedoes his own holiday.

• 1:31:52Speaker 01

Completely talking. So he'd had this exchange.

• 1:31:55Jonny?

Watching himself torpedo his own holiday.

• 1:31:57Speaker 01

He'd had this exchange back and forth with Ezra Klein from Vox and um it had this thing.

• 1:32:04Speaker 03

I remember him tearing apart Ezra Klein on the podcast later.

• 1:32:07Speaker 01

With them. So they sat down, had this podcast, had Tony say Ezra Ezra Ezra, like, please, in the interests of everybody's sanity that's listening and like the way he goes on. And uh but it's basically, his idea was, I'm on holiday, this has really annoyed me, fuck, what do I do? I also, like, my wife's here. Like, so I'm gonna get in the doghouse if I keep on doing this, which is nice to know that Sam Harris still like has to suffer with stuff like that.

• 1:32:30Speaker 03

  Hmm. Being in the doghouse.

• 1:32:31Speaker 01

Yeah, you know what I mean? Like, Sam fucking Harris.

• 1:32:34Speaker 03

  Mundane stuff.

• 1:32:34Jonny?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:35Speaker 01

  Um but.

• 1:32:36Jonny?

Can't meditate without that, can you, mate?

• 1:32:39Speaker 01

Yes, a lot of mindfulness, yeah, to get yourself off the fucking sofa tonight. Um so, yeah, and he's he's saying that his his solution was to just publish the email exchange. So they'd had this big email exchange, big long one, just like scroll, screenshot, scroll, screenshot, scroll, screenshot, like just went. And just published that, but didn't really like double check how it looked. And because there wasn't any context behind that, that made him look even worse. And then he just like tweet, phone down, face down, like on the table, came back to it a couple of hours later and like all hell had broken loose. Um and you're like, fuck, it's just nice, it's nice to know that people, like, everyone has to deal with.

• 1:33:19Jonny?

  You're Mr. Mindful.

• 1:33:20Speaker 03

It's so weird that you can set all hell going loose just by like typing something on your phone.

• 1:33:24Jonny?

And also all hell hasn't broken loose, it's just different things happening on the screen.

• 1:33:27Speaker 03

Yeah, true. If you take a very sensory view of it, it's like, it's all just fine.

• 1:33:31Speaker 01

  Listen, Sam, like.

• 1:33:31Speaker 03

  So was that your?

• 1:33:33Speaker 01

  Digital minimalism.

• 1:33:33Speaker 03

  Digital minimalism.

• 1:33:34Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:33:35Speaker 03

Mine is an app called, so you guys are gonna hate this, but it's called Spotty Free. So.

• 1:33:44Speaker 03

Even V X D is shaking his head.

• 1:33:48Speaker 01

  Do you need a cushion?

• 1:33:49Jonny?

I think I'm just gonna have to go.

• 1:33:52Speaker 03

So guys, what Spotify Free does is if you have, let's even set off Johnny's tile. Um, if you have Spotify Free and you hate the really intrusive, quite loud adverts, like the, the volume on.

• 1:34:07Speaker 01

Do you mean that, do you mean that, do you mean their earning?

• 1:34:09Speaker 03

  Their earning potential.

• 1:34:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:10Speaker 03

Chris is like, had to write it in the thing. So normally the, it's music and then it's like, hey, welcome. And then it's back to the music again. You're like, I was just blowing my head off. What Spotify Free does is it just detects when an advert's coming and just mutes Spotify for thirty seconds.

• 1:34:27Speaker 01

So it doesn't speed up the way that you play the music?

• 1:34:30Speaker 03

It just gives you thirty seconds.

• 1:34:31Speaker 01

It doesn't allow you to play songs within playlists without it being on random?

• 1:34:36Speaker 03

No, you can. So on the desktop version. So then this Spotify is a desktop app. You get full function Spotify apart from being able to play at the same time on multiple devices and you can't.

• 1:34:48Speaker 01

  We, we cut it out.

• 1:34:52Speaker 03

  Okay, um. Self versus Simon.

• 1:34:54Speaker 01

I think that we'll do, I'll do one more and then we'll do a quick fire round.

• 1:34:57Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:34:59Jonny?

  There's no iPhone equivalent?

• 1:35:01Speaker 03

  No.

• 1:35:01Jonny?

So you're not listening to Spotify on your iPhone?

• 1:35:03Speaker 03

I don't really use it on the phone.

• 1:35:04Jonny?

What do you listen to in the gym?

• 1:35:06Speaker 03

Um, podcasts or just by music.

• 1:35:09Jonny?

  Do you not?

• 1:35:10Speaker 03

  Some, some, sometimes.

• 1:35:11Jonny?

Going like, I'm a little tea.

• 1:35:13Speaker 03

  But sure.

• 1:35:16Speaker 01

  Uh, so.

• 1:35:20Speaker 01

  Philip's sunrise lamp.

• 1:35:23Speaker 03

  I know.

• 1:35:24Speaker 01

Absolute fucking game changer. Uh, so especially if you are from the UK and you don't get an awful lot of sunlight, you'll know that seasonal affective disorder, SAD, is a, a, a real thing. Like I, I definitely feel better in the summer and worse in the winter.

• 1:35:41Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:35:41Speaker 01

Um, one of the reasons for that is your natural circadian rhythm gets thrown off due to melatonin production. That is dictated by the amount of light exposure that you get. Uh, a solution to that are these, uh, like indoor sun lamps that you can get that are measured in lumens and they match the particular tone uh, of sunlight outside and you expose yourself to it for a particular amount of time. Sunrise lamps aren't bright enough, even this one, which is like the biggest dick one that you can get. It's not bright enough for that to make a real difference, but for me, it's it's enough to kind of make me think that it's gonna help. So the main thing is, it's the same as a radio alarm clock that you would have normally.

• 1:36:23Speaker 01

But it's got a bright as fuck light, which is a similar hue to what you will get on daylight. That comes on before the sound goes off. So it means that you are able to wake up. Due to light as opposed to due to sound, it then also can fire out like nature sounds or whatever it is at the end of it. But for me, like, it's the same as people that don't work in Pomodoro's. Like, if you're waking up to sound now, I'm like, what is this? Like the fucking eighteen hundreds. Oh, yeah, mate. Why don't you just like go and get someone to ring a bell at the local church tower outside of your window?

• 1:36:55Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:36:55Speaker 01

Like, so you set it away for a particular time and it will slowly begin to increase. The intensity of the light over a half an hour period before you wake up. And what that'll also do is play around with your cortisol level on a morning and also your melatonin release. In an effort to ready your body to be awake, uh, as opposed to sometimes, especially if you if you're not using like sleep cycle. Which will use your sleep waves to then also try and time things in. If you're not using either of these, you're potentially in the middle of deep sleep and just getting like.

• 1:37:27Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:37:28Speaker 01

Wrenched out of it, which is not a nice feeling. There'll be some days when you will wake up and you'll be like, oh my god, if you feel drunk.

• 1:37:35Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:37:35Speaker 01

You try and wake up, um, whereas.

• 1:37:38Speaker 03

  Agonizing sometimes, like.

• 1:37:39Speaker 01

The pain that you get upon waking, you're like, just.

• 1:37:42Jonny?

Hard to turn that around as well. I don't think I ever have like a productive morning or day if I've worked and I'm feeling like that shit.

• 1:37:48Speaker 01

Hmm. Yeah. Um, so Philips sunrise lamp, there's also, there's a number of other settings that you can use for it. It's got a a sunset. Setting, which is quite nice. So again, when you go to bed, you can press ten minutes and it will go down from its uh, current brightness to zero. It's got a couple of other things as well where it's got a very, very uh low light way of displaying the time at night. I know this sounds so like finicky, but you don't realise just how much light like a normal LCD clock will actually give off. Like if it's a fucking red one, like you know, one of those like your mum and dad will have one and you're like it's this is this is brighter than it is during the day. Like if it's all red, you feel like you're in a Tom

• 1:38:33Speaker 01

Clancy movie and someone's gonna like rainbow six your door ring and like come in with a fucking laser gun.

• 1:38:42Speaker 01

Um. So yeah, the the that's really low. I've now taken this to another another level of of uh anal and have got a second sunrise lamp of a different brand over the far side of the room.

• 1:38:56Jonny?

  Nice.

• 1:38:57Speaker 01

Um. Reason for that is that uh my new year's resolution is no phone in my bedroom. My you're an idiot if you just have it's like an asymmetric risk if you only have one alarm clock. I needed a second alarm clock, but I couldn't use my phone. I also I also couldn't use one, which

• 1:39:12Jonny?

You literally bought another alarm clock.

• 1:39:14Speaker 01

But the thing is as well, I couldn't buy another Philips sunrise lamp because if the power goes off, then I'm fucked still. So what I've got is, and it's only about thirty quid. It's if you don't have a hundred and like twenty quid to spend on a Philips sunrise lamp, this will be a moderately adequate alternative. Um. It's just a cheaper version of it, but the crucial thing this has is you put three triple A batteries in and if the power gets killed, it'll kick in on that.

• 1:39:40Jonny?

  That's cool.

• 1:39:41Speaker 01

  So I'm like

• 1:39:41Jonny?

  Backup power.

• 1:39:42Speaker 01

I've got a backup thing, which I mean, like, I the other thing as well is like I wake up at the time when I tell myself to wake up. Like, the only thing that I'll miss, like if the power went off in the house, all that would happen is my my miss my morning routine. Like, it's very rare that I have to get up for anything other than my desire to wake up.

• 1:39:58Jonny?

The the best insurance against against that is to just wake up at the same time every day because eventually like now I wake up pretty much every day before any alarm goes off.

• 1:40:07Speaker 01

And you get predictably tired at the same time. I I I dream for the day when that's going to be the case, but for me, that's not happening.

• 1:40:13Jonny?

So we're now doing quick fire.

• 1:40:15Speaker 03

  Quick fire round.

• 1:40:16Jonny?

So mine feeds off that, which is I'm on second stint of no caffeine. But now I think I'm just gonna make it permanent.

• 1:40:25Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:40:26Jonny?

  Oh.

• 1:40:26Speaker 03

  Bloody hell.

• 1:40:27Jonny?

Okay. I'll, I'll, I'll explain. So the first time I did it was thirty day challenge. My girlfriend said, I bet you can't go for thirty days without coffee. So fuck you, yes I can. So I went for thirty days.

• 1:40:37Speaker 03

  See the day.

• 1:40:37Jonny?

Without, without coffee, without coffee at all. So that included decaf coffee.

• 1:40:42Speaker 03

  Hmm.

• 1:40:42Jonny?

I just really like coffee, so I found that very difficult. Tried lots of different teas, nothing was that great. This time, so then slowly slipped back into, you say, you start with one coffee, then you go, oh, let's have another one. And you're back to four coffees. So you're like, back to where I started. So start of this year, I was like, first of January, new year, new me, I'll just stop having coffee, see what happens. Stop having caffeine. So now I've had caffeine on three occasions. All of them have been pre-workout and on all those sessions I've hit a big PB. So I think like.

• 1:41:14Speaker 03

  Very large PBs.

• 1:41:15Jonny?

Yeah. So for the first time um ever, I think, apart from like maybe the first pre-workout I ever had. I'm experiencing the performance enhancing benefits of caffeine.

• 1:41:26Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:41:26Jonny?

  And on a daily basis.

• 1:41:28Speaker 03

Can you talk through the PBs? Cause I, I think.

• 1:41:30Jonny?

So, okay, so, so um the way it happened was I was gonna train slightly later than normal. It's a big squat session, um thought, I'm feeling a bit tired, I'll just have, I'll have a coffee, so I had an espresso, a single espresso. Got into training, squat two hundred, two hundred goes down, two hundred fires back up again. And I was like, what the fuck just happened there like that? Wasn't expecting it. Two hundred on the bar, same thing happened, two thirty, same thing, two forty was like the same speed two twenty would normally be. I was like, okay. Two twenty back on the bar, was meant to do a set of five, did four, and I thought, I'm just gonna hit a PB here. So. Two twenty for six was a PB, hit seven, probably had another two or three in the tank.

• 1:42:13Jonny?

And I was like, this is, this is ridiculous. So I was like, it'll be a one off. Couple of days go by, same thing happens with bench. It's like, right, caffeine again, same thing. Deadlift, same thing. So, okay. Caffeine's a very powerful thing. So on a, on a daily basis now, I'll just have decaf coffee and I don't, honestly don't notice any change.

• 1:42:36Speaker 01

  Decaf coffee you're drinking.

• 1:42:37Jonny?

So, quite particular of this. So, Oozber coffee, if you live in, you'd probably get it anywhere, I suppose. But their decaf coffee is genuinely nice, as is the stuff you can buy in a Starbucks. So Starbucks decaf coffee.

• 1:42:51Speaker 01

So you're not making anything at home?

• 1:42:52Jonny?

Yeah, I grind, grind the beans, make it with an.

• 1:42:55Speaker 01

Coffee company. What, is it just normal decaf?

• 1:42:58Jonny?

Just the beans. So I've got a big kilo bag of the beans.

• 1:43:02Speaker 01

  They only do one?

• 1:43:03Jonny?

  Just a couple of beans.

• 1:43:04Speaker 01

  Just a couple of beans.

• 1:43:06Jonny?

Yeah, they've got, they've got like twelve caffeinated variations and then.

• 1:43:09Speaker 01

One. Right, okay. So you know, I was wondering.

• 1:43:11Jonny?

I think that's the same with most. For the scoop of beans. Right, okay. Decaf coffee, at the same time, I've also gone server, but that's.

• 1:43:18Speaker 01

  Another conversation.

• 1:43:19Jonny?

Conversation. So, yeah, but that was your influence.

• 1:43:22Speaker 03

I'm amazed that you, so, so you are, you're still gonna have it pre-training?

• 1:43:26Jonny?

I think I'll probably use it strategically for big sessions or like competitions and stuff like that.

• 1:43:29Speaker 01

  How did you sleep?

• 1:43:31Jonny?

So that, so that was what I was leaning on from, from that. Like the, for me, I realised that, or only realised after giving coffee up, that. Caffeine up, that consistent wake times are really difficult with caffeine. Cause you don't, so to be clear, like I was the person telling you stuff who's pathetic.

• 1:43:48Speaker 01

  Perfect avatar.

• 1:43:49Jonny?

For not having caffeine and always used to think that it wasn't making any difference, but you don't realise how much of a difference it's making until you.

• 1:43:56Speaker 03

It's so annoying. I really wish it didn't last that long. I wish there was a naloxone for caffeine, like an antidote.

• 1:44:03Speaker 01

But I've, I've found some, my caffeine usage tends to be once a day. Uh, first thing in the morning, mostly because I like it and also I do, I do feel like I need that kick. I also train in the morning as well. Um, but I genuinely like on the night time now, like my eyes are drooping.

• 1:44:19Jonny?

  That's what you want.

• 1:44:20Speaker 01

And I, I think. Podcast is with Dr Greg Potter, he, his advice and he fucking knows what he's talking about. If you have nine hours before, like that should be your bottom end of, of where, where you're prepared to take it. I mean, I'm sure that there will still be some sort of effects downstream if you have one at six AM and you go to bed at nine PM at night. But I'm gonna hope that you'll probably be able to mitigate most of it.

• 1:44:45Jonny?

It's, it's always just dose dependent, I think as well.

• 1:44:48Speaker 01

  If you have like.

• 1:44:49Jonny?

Yeah, I mean, I definitely, and I think, I think the standard office work is having a lot of caffeine.

• 1:44:54Speaker 01

Anyone who's having caffeine after five PM, like Darren, will, will go out for dinner and then Darren will have a coffee.

• 1:45:00Speaker 03

After a restaurant meal, it, it completely boggles me.

• 1:45:03Jonny?

So, so Ben has a theory that, so he will do that and doesn't feel anything, doesn't affect his sleep. And isn't that also about coffee? And he thinks that, so his girlfriend is like me, loves coffee and couldn't, couldn't get to sleep. So he thinks there's just, there's people who are really responsive, people who aren't responsive. But my response is that it's still having an impact on you.

• 1:45:24Speaker 03

There's people who say, subjectively, I don't feel like I, there's much difference. But you also don't feel the amount, the percentage of REM sleep that you're getting. So, so he might be able to get to sleep and so, yeah, he doesn't feel like, from his mind, there's no.

• 1:45:38Jonny?

You don't necessarily feel dietary fat or sugar or protein, but it's, it's still there.

• 1:45:42Speaker 03

Oh, yeah, exactly. And it was only when I started drinking coffee that I started to fall asleep during, so like, I reintroduced it. Last year, I had just a couple and I started falling asleep during the day and I, I never fall asleep during the day normally. And it was just because the knock on effect of the reduced sleep quality that night.

• 1:45:58Speaker 01

  It's gated down.

• 1:46:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:46:00Jonny?

Especially this time of year. So you'll, we'll maybe link to your video about vitamin D and caffeine when there's no sunlight and how that can become a negative spiral. I, I think just, just try it, I suppose. If you drink a lot of coffee, the first week is hellish.

• 1:46:15Speaker 03

Well, if you do Johnny's de-caffeine protocol.

• 1:46:19Jonny?

  Yep.

• 1:46:19Speaker 03

That, which is on our Instagram, have a look then.

• 1:46:22Jonny?

That is hard to just make it seamless. You don't even notice it's happening. Yeah.

• 1:46:26Speaker 03

  It is.

• 1:46:27Jonny?

Or you can rip the Band-Aid off and go Navy SEAL mode.

• 1:46:29Speaker 03

So, speaking of seamless, um, I'm.

• 1:46:33Jonny?

  No fat.

• 1:46:33Speaker 03

My life hack is cut a tennis ball in half. And I, I was just joking about no fat, but.

• 1:46:43Speaker 03

If you have a door that often hits the wall, makes a hole in the plaster, cut tennis ball in half, super glue it to the wall. Looks like a nice little abstract bit of art on your wall. So that's, that's one good thing. And also the door will bounce off the tennis ball and.

• 1:47:00Speaker 01

  Doorstop. Yeah.

• 1:47:03Speaker 03

You can install a doorstop, but like the, the heavy, the heavy brass things that you stick in the floor.

• 1:47:09Speaker 01

No, I was thinking more like.

• 1:47:11Speaker 03

  A wedge.

• 1:47:11Speaker 01

Well, just any doorstop that's built for that.

• 1:47:14Speaker 03

Are you not going to remove the paint on your wall? This is for my front door. So, yeah, so.

• 1:47:19Speaker 01

I just, I just think there, there will be a lot of people who are very particular about how they've decorated the house.

• 1:47:25Speaker 03

Mm hmm. It's always a conversation piece. Oh, that looks funny there. Oh, I get it. That's so clever.

• 1:47:30Speaker 01

Yeah, okay. Yeah. Okay, I'm, I'm, I'm, given the choice.

• 1:47:36Speaker 03

  Zany.

• 1:47:36Speaker 01

It is. Given, given the choice between a hole in the wall and half tennis ball in the wall.

• 1:47:43Speaker 03

That, that's what it was. So I, I, I covered up an existing hole in the wall as well.

• 1:47:46Speaker 01

Oh, right. Well, I mean, no brainer.

• 1:47:48Speaker 03

  Yeah, I just thought.

• 1:47:49Speaker 01

Fine. For the scoop of the beans with. For the scoop of the beans with? Can we link that clip? Video man Dean will make it work. Can we have it here, Dean? For to scoop the beans with?

• 1:47:58Speaker 03

  Dean's like, oh, guys.

• 1:48:00Speaker 01

What do you want me to do? Just leave all this stuff?

• 1:48:05Speaker 03

  All right, um.

• 1:48:07Speaker 01

Right. Can't sell a new petrol.

• 1:48:12Speaker 01

Uh, the new Alan Partridge is coming out soon and we're, we're all very excited.

• 1:48:16Speaker 03

  Oh, God.

• 1:48:16Speaker 01

Uh, okay. So my, my final one is as a gentleman, uh, treat yourself with a sit down wee.

• 1:48:23Speaker 03

  Oh, yes.

• 1:48:24Speaker 01

Okay. I just, I, I think it's an underused. Are you not worried about your winky touching the, the toilet itself? Inside of the bowl. Hmm. Uh, especially on my toilet. I know that my toilet's very clean. Very hot.

• 1:48:35Speaker 03

It gets a hot cleanse every time.

• 1:48:37Speaker 01

The, uh, the previous owners of this house, when they had the downstairs toilet fitted, they plumbed the cistern of the downstairs toilet into the hot water, not into the cold. And it, it, it gets pretty clean.

• 1:48:50Speaker 03

  Steamy in the winter.

• 1:48:51Speaker 01

  Yeah, there is steam.

• 1:48:52Speaker 03

I think it'd probably be quite nice, actually.

• 1:48:55Speaker 01

  It's pretty nice, pretty warm.

• 1:48:55Speaker 03

  Very wet.

• 1:48:56Speaker 01

Does it affect you? Yeah. Does it affect your build? I suppose you don't know, do you? Fuck no. You've never, you've never not had it. So. Yeah, I don't know. I don't, I don't flush that much. It's a small, do you know what I mean? It's like a small amount of water. Um, but yeah, sit down wee, like especially, you know, I guess as a girl, like if you're having a stand up wee.

• 1:49:13Speaker 01

  Have a sit down poo.

• 1:49:15Speaker 01

We're not having a stand up poo, are you definitely not.

• 1:49:17Speaker 03

I've seen a guy take a stand up poo.

• 1:49:18Speaker 01

Can you. A stand up poo. What, in full extension.

• 1:49:21Speaker 03

He's mental. He he's got two really large testicles, cause he's he always gets them out.

• 1:49:26Speaker 01

Is it that guy that calls it the brain.

• 1:49:28Speaker 03

  No, but the.

• 1:49:30Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:49:30Speaker 03

He, I was at a, I I had a party at my house and when I left my room, he slipped into my bed naked. And was like, oh mate, you get me a can of coke. But no, get out of my bed and stop being naked. And um he is just always like.

• 1:49:47Speaker 01

  Doing.

• 1:49:47Speaker 03

He's a bit of an exhibitionist, yeah, like there was a house viewing and like students coming in to view his house and he was sat in his room masturbating, I think knowingly. Like, I I mean, this is quite, makes him sound like a real.

• 1:50:00Speaker 01

  Offender.

• 1:50:01Speaker 03

  Offender, yeah. Anyway.

• 1:50:03Speaker 01

Publicly masturbating and he has stand up poo.

• 1:50:05Speaker 03

Yeah, you have the stand up poo, that was.

• 1:50:07Speaker 01

Yeah, so, sit, sit down, we, especially, especially as well, you know, like if you wake up, I don't know whether you you guys get this going on from the sleep thing. You know, when you wake up at like five AM. Erections. Four AM, no. Five AM or four AM. Dean was thinking it. Stop thinking about erections, bloody hell. Um, five AM or four AM and you don't want to. Show your erection. Allow yourself to pass the upper threshold of wakefulness, because if you do, if you start to like deploy too much cognitive power to move around. So you like kid yourself and you're like. Like slop on the top. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:50:43Speaker 03

This is a hundred percent the top benefit of sit down weas.

• 1:50:45Speaker 01

Yes, absolutely, cause you can just sit and you're like, ah, at least it's going in.

• 1:50:50Speaker 03

Mm hmm. You can, you can sit head in hands or rest on your knees.

• 1:50:53Speaker 01

Yeah. Not everyone's got, not everyone's got the mobility that you do, man.

• 1:50:59Speaker 03

  The life problems.

• 1:51:01Speaker 01

It's such a sad image that. Sit head in hands and contemplate your own mortality while you're having a sit down. Arab, head in hands, having a. Were they completely. Done it again. Stop it, stop it. They're completely hairless, hairless asshole.

• 1:51:15Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:51:16Speaker 01

Oh, someone, someone piped up, actually, we've got, to finish off, we've got one that was submitted in the comments. Called me and Daniel Sloss amateurs for saying that we have to work ourselves up to shave our assholes. Uh, and said, uh, boys, yous are absolute amateurs, Veet's sensitive.

• 1:51:33Speaker 03

  Really.

• 1:51:34Speaker 01

Like, just Veet's the full thing, washes off. So that. I thought it was gonna go down the route of like, just go straight in.

• 1:51:41Speaker 01

  With what?

• 1:51:42Jonny?

Well, you you were saying, is he, he was implying, you said you have to work yourself up to it.

• 1:51:47Speaker 01

Work yourself up to like the bravery to put a shaver down there.

• 1:51:51Jonny?

Yeah, I'm saying so. I thought he was gonna say, oh, I just, I fuck around, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:51:54Speaker 03

Uh, okay. The only, so I suppose the thing of using Veet, like a hair removal cream versus waxing.

• 1:51:59Speaker 01

  It's estrogen.

• 1:52:00Speaker 03

  No, no.

• 1:52:01Speaker 01

Everything, everything's got estrogen in, doesn't it?

• 1:52:03Speaker 03

I'm sure it does. It it's just the, like, one is the temporary solution, whereas waxing is like permanently weakening the follicles until eventually you don't have to shave. What is going on? What is that? Why is it so loud?

• 1:52:17Jonny?

  It's tiled.

• 1:52:18Speaker 03

I think this is a life fail.

• 1:52:19Jonny?

  It is a life fail.

• 1:52:20Speaker 03

  It's fucking shit.

• 1:52:22Jonny?

  It's definitely.

• 1:52:23Speaker 01

Who bought you it? You didn't buy it for yourself?

• 1:52:24Jonny?

No, it was a Christmas present, a year, a year and a bit ago.

• 1:52:27Speaker 01

Was it? Yeah, I knew it was. I knew it. See, I knew it was.

• 1:52:29Speaker 03

  Johnny, you like, like.

• 1:52:30Jonny?

It's the sort of thing I do need, but but since then, annoyingly, I've established a very consistent routine with where I put my wallet.

• 1:52:37Speaker 01

Uh, so here's a, here's a good point for a little bit of a life fail. I came in once, like, I always have the same routine when I come in, into the kitchen, bag goes down here, open the door, bag goes down, et cetera, et cetera. Everything has its place. It's just idiosyncratic now. Don't think about it. Once, came into the living room, lost my keys for half a day.

• 1:52:57Speaker 01

Diverted, diverted one choice, came into the living room to say hi to, to, to Lewis, and I was like, what the fuck has happened?

• 1:53:06Jonny?

Keys are just taken care of by automatic behaviour and that's derailed.

• 1:53:09Speaker 01

  Fucked.

• 1:53:10Jonny?

  Yeah.
