In here, we pour whiskey. Whiskey, whiskey, whiskey, whiskey.

• 1:21Speaker 02

Who that creature in the ginger beard?

• 1:24Speaker 03

  Sturdy and ginger.

• 1:26Speaker 04

Like they are. The ginger gene is a curse. Gingers are beautiful.

• 1:29Speaker 03

You owe me $5 for the whiskey. $75 for the horse. Gingers, oh, hell, no. This whiskey is excellent.

• 1:37Andrew Santino?

Ginger. I like gingers. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to Whiskey Ginger. My guest today is one of my favorite people on earth. I say that for all my guests, but I mean it once again today. It's Paul Scheer.

• 1:46Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:48Andrew Santino?

  Cheers. Cheers, young lad. Cheers.

• 1:50Speaker 05

Excited to see you. I feel like I haven't seen you.

• 1:53Andrew Santino?

  Hmm.

• 1:54Speaker 05

  I like that.

• 1:55Andrew Santino?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:56Speaker 05

I haven't seen you in a long time. You and I shared probably one of the weirdest trailer situations of all time.

• 2:03Andrew Santino?

  Yep.

• 2:03Speaker 05

Because we were on this movie Disaster Artist.

• 2:05Andrew Santino?

Yeah, well, you were in it. I got cut right out of it.

• 2:08Speaker 05

  You're in it. I mean, we're all.

• 2:09Andrew Santino?

I was sliced out of it.

• 2:10Speaker 05

That movie has, that movie has so many people in it and indicative of how we were treated. We, like, it was the only movie I've been on where people who had lines, had things to do.

• 2:23Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 2:23Speaker 05

Were in, um, trailers that were probably no wider than like these chairs that we're sitting.

• 2:29Andrew Santino?

Yeah, it was, it was pretty wild.

• 2:30Speaker 05

It is really tight. And we were all there. It was like a party bus of trailers.

• 2:35Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 2:36Speaker 05

And yeah, you didn't know what was gonna be in, because you were, uh, you were, you were Greg. No, no, you're not Greg. You were the other guy.

• 2:42Andrew Santino?

Yeah, the guy that, that gets, Greg's best friend who gets the strawberries sexually eaten off him or whatever. Whatever, whatever that ended up being. By the way, shout out to Greg Sostero.

• 2:53Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 2:53Andrew Santino?

Who was around, and I think I met at a show, at a stand-up show one time. And my instinct was that he's not gonna like, uh, me or us or that.

• 3:05Speaker 05

  Oh, no, no.

• 3:05Andrew Santino?

No, it was the opposite. My instinct was like, oh, he's gonna be bummed. Like, if you ever, if, if anybody has ever seen The Room, you know what we're talking about. If you don't, you're, this is so out of con.

• 3:13Speaker 05

Get on it. This is it. I mean, The Room is, you can't get better.

• 3:16Andrew Santino?

It's incredible. And then, uh, a movie was made called The Disaster Artist because of it, which you're, you're in it, your wife is in it.

• 3:22Speaker 05

Yeah, a bunch of, Seth Rogen, James Franco, Dave Franco, Alison Brie. It's a, it's a who's who.

• 3:27Andrew Santino?

  It's a collection of the who's the who's.

• 3:29Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 3:29Andrew Santino?

Yeah, Nathan Fielder, yeah. It was incredible. It was a wild experience. And also, kind of felt, I'm sure, like, how The Room felt, where it was really kind of disorganized and strange and very PC and kind of no one really knew what we were. We were all kind of just like figuring it out live, because it was really kind of. I don't know, improvisational more than disorganized. It was kinda like, this is what we wanted to feel like and let's see what it looks like now.

• 3:52Speaker 05

I think that like, you know, when I work with people like Seth and Evan, who work together a lot and they were producing this with James Franco, like, there's an energy of they know exactly what they want. They'll get that, but then they also allow a lot of flexibility to be like, oh, we need this now.

• 4:07Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 4:08Speaker 05

Like, and I love that ability because I think with comedy, it could sound good or look good on the page, but then when you're there and you've seen people actually interacting, you're like, oh, we could do better here. We could pull this out.

• 4:19Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 4:19Speaker 05

I mean, and that was crazy because we were recreating shot for shot, the worst movie ever made. And then also doing the behind the scenes. It was so meta on so many different levels. And then like you have James Franco, who was like very much embodying Tommy Wiseau.

• 4:37Andrew Santino?

  He was in character.

• 4:38Speaker 05

It was wild. And yeah, it was, it was a, it was a great like, like hang too. Cause I feel like sometimes it's like, we get brought in to do something. It's like, oh, we're the comedy guys in something bigger. This is like all comedy.

• 4:54Andrew Santino?

All comedy. Yeah. Yeah. It really was. I mean, it was, it was one of those, um, uh, I'll look back on it when I'm much older and be like, that's insane that all those people were together on one movie. Cause in the future, uh, you know, we won't be making movies. AI will be dead. It'll be over.

• 5:09Speaker 05

No, it'll be great. We'll be making like, we'll be making 30 second TikTok movies. It'll be great. Yeah.

• 5:14Andrew Santino?

Which is what we're doing literally right now. 30 second TikTok films.

• 5:18Speaker 05

  That's it.

• 5:20Andrew Santino?

When you felt, I want to ask you something because I've, I've, I've liked you for a long time. I've been a fan of what you've done for a long time. And when you guys were doing Human Giant, which people, if you, if, if listeners don't know, which some of the younger comedy fans might not know.

• 5:32Speaker 05

Yeah. Aziz Ansari, Rob Hubel, directed by Jason Wallner, uh, that was our group.

• 5:37Andrew Santino?

  That was awesome, dude.

• 5:38Speaker 05

  So much fun.

• 5:38Andrew Santino?

It was incredible. When you guys were putting that together, right? And then you did it for television. Were you afraid that TV was gonna like, take away what you guys were trying to make or no?

• 5:49Speaker 05

You know, it was kind of interesting in making that show. So, um, we made these short films that were played in New York called Channel 102. Out in LA, it was like Channel 101. And it was like Dan Harmon started that with like Jack Black. And they would make these like funny little short like TV shows. And like if you, if people liked it, you'd make another one. So we started making shorts for that. And we made two and MTV offered us a show. They were like, you want to do a show? We didn't have to pitch it. And we're like, sure, but MTV, you're never gonna like make, let us make the show that we want to make. But this guy at MTV got us, like he just got us and, and was our defensive blocker in every single way.

• 6:34Speaker 05

Like I remember we did this sketch, uh, called, uh, Hot Air Balloon Cops. And the premise was it was high speed chases, but instead of having a police car, the cops had a hot air balloon. And I was the, I was the, the guy and I had like a cheese plate and we couldn't follow cars because the wind was pushing the balloon. And I remember sitting around the table, we were watching these sketches with the MTV execs. And this one executive who did Reverend Run's House, like Run's House.

• 7:02Andrew Santino?

I love Run's House. I thought that was a great show.

• 7:04Speaker 05

Great show. Yeah. Maybe not the best guy to give us sketch company notes, but, uh, he goes, he goes, I just don't think it makes any sense. Like, why would they be in a hot air balloon? And we're like, well, that's, that's the, that's the bit. Yeah. And it's like, so that's what we encountered a lot.

• 7:19Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 7:19Speaker 05

But this guy, uh, Tony DeSanto, who like greenlit The Hills, which was like a huge show.

• 7:25Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 7:25Speaker 05

Uh, he also greenlit like Andy Milonakis. Like he was all over the board. So he just got us and was like, just make the show you want to make. And the only time he said we couldn't make something was, um, when we made it, we just couldn't air it. It was something called Religious Abortion Doctor. And it was, uh, Christian Schalls getting an abortion and I'm super religious. And I was like, Lord bless my hand as I take this baby out of this woman's womb. And I'm blessing her and I'm wearing a giant crucifix.

• 7:53Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 7:53Speaker 05

Like that was the only one that I.

• 7:54Andrew Santino?

I can see them being like, look dude. I just don't know if we can do this. We like it, it's funny.

• 8:01Speaker 05

They're like, that's the only one that they ever gave us like real pushback on, so.

• 8:05Andrew Santino?

That is right, but it's because you guys were so great together. And it's in this day and age, I guess, I'm being a little reflective because, you know, I don't like when somebody goes, you couldn't make that today. I think that's such a bullshit phrase.

• 8:18Speaker 05

  I do too.

• 8:18Andrew Santino?

You can make stuff today. It's just the angles in which we do these things are different, but I do know back in that era, it was kind of like a lot of risks were being taken on television in a really good way. But it was the fear of like, well, if we take this product that we kind of do organically.

• 8:33Speaker 05

  Right.

• 8:33Andrew Santino?

Is TV gonna change it so much? Because it did happen a lot. You would see, you know, the best example of was like Louis, when Louis made his first Louis show.

• 8:40Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 8:41Andrew Santino?

He talked constantly about how much he was like, that's not what I wanted to make. It just, it turned into something that just wasn't him. And that's like the fear.

• 8:49Speaker 05

You learn a lot about how to, like, how to make the show that you want to make. Because then when you first get into any situations, like, oh, we do it like this. You know, even with Human Giant, like, we had great creative blockers, but we made that show in a crazy way. And then you go, oh, I want to make it differently now. I want to approach this differently. And I got very lucky in working with Adult Swim and MTV where creatively, they would let us do what we want to do. But there's so many people, it's like death by a thousand cuts. It's like, oh, change this, change this, change this. And you don't cast the person you want. You don't get the thing that you want to do. And then all of a sudden, you have this like, kind of watered down product in the hope of success. And then at the end of the day, you have to live with it. Like it, your name is on it. Like, no one knows, like, oh, well, I wanted to do it like this. And

• 9:35Speaker 05

so I do think that there's always a fear, but I think that there's a great way of, I think, not being combative with the people that you're working with. And that's the thing I've learned more than ever, which is like, I could totally disagree with you, and I can be a dick, or I can totally disagree with you and try to find a middle ground. And then for a long time, I did, I made dick moves. I'm like, I look back on mistakes. Like, I remember I once got a note. On a script I was working on and I was so psyched about the script, I felt really good and they're like, "We just feel like it needs more magic, like it's missing magic." And I was like, "What do you mean?" Like, what, like, how? "Give me an actionable note and I'll make, I'll change the script." But it was, like, what is magic?

• 10:20Andrew Santino?

  What is magic?

• 10:20Speaker 05

What is magic? Like, that's not a note. Like, and then, and then G gave me another note and I was like, "That's a note. I could take that." But you can't be a dick. It's like, it's hard. It's like, and I think that like a lot of people get into trouble and people are like, "I hate that person because you make them feel stupid."

• 10:37Andrew Santino?

As long as it's not a constant in your career, right? Like, it's okay if it happens. Everyone knows that everyone's got some shit. And we're all kind of like, "Look, man, I'm just trying to make this thing and blah, blah, blah." And like, we're in the middle of it right now and it's great, but it's also, you know, developmental nightmare sometimes, but

• 10:52Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 10:52Andrew Santino?

You just have to like breathe your way through it. And I know this is like inside jargon for fans, but the truth really is, I think fans don't really, or America doesn't really know that a lot of times what you see isn't what we really were trying to make. Sometimes, sometimes.

• 11:07Speaker 05

You go into like, it's a crazy world where you're constantly putting your material up in front of people who may not even be a fan of your stuff.

• 11:16Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 11:17Speaker 05

Right? They're just there and they're looking at something and it's a cra- and then all of a sudden you make a change. Like, I remember, back to Human Giant, a perfect example. Uh, we had these characters called the Illusionators and it was like Criss Angel magicians. And in the first pilot, uh, we, like, somebody rose from the dead. Like, we went to a funeral. We zapped the coffin and this person got out of the coffin and the little kid's like, "Grandpa?" And, uh, it was like, it was like very stupid, but it was like Criss Angel's in that zone of being like, and, uh, we tested it, the show got tested where they put it in front of a bunch of like young MTV viewers and go, "What do you think of the show?" And the testing came back that the magic wasn't real enough. And we were like, yeah, but not a magic show. It's a sketch show.

• 12:02Speaker 05

It's making fun of magic shows. They're like, yeah. We just think you shouldn't air that in the pilot episode. People don't like the magic. I'm like, it's not magic. And like, and that, and then you have to take those notes. You like, and all of a sudden, like, you're making these cuts or you're trying to make the magic better. It's like, and I feel like, you know, Adult Swim, the funniest thing about Adult Swim is like, when I was working there, I think Eric Andre's show tested the worst out of any show in Adult Swim.

• 12:29Andrew Santino?

One of the best shows they've ever produced.

• 12:30Speaker 05

A hundred percent. And Mike Lazzo, who ran Adult Swim, was like, fuck it. I don't care what they think. Like, and that was, that's what you need is like, these people who don't care. It's like, Mike Lazzo's like, I love Eric. I'm gonna make this show.

• 12:43Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 12:44Speaker 05

And, and I think that you have a lot of people who hide behind these things of like, no, no, well, this person said this, so we have to change it like this. And, you know, and then some people just come in. I feel bad for women all the time because I feel like any pilot you see, like, they always replace the woman. It's always like, ah, it's not working.

• 13:01Andrew Santino?

  They do.

• 13:02Speaker 05

Well, let's recast the woman. It's like.

• 13:05Andrew Santino?

Dude, I was on a sitcom, my first sitcom, um, the, the, uh, one of the female leads got replaced a- after the table read.

• 13:13Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 13:13Andrew Santino?

  In front of network.

• 13:14Speaker 05

Oh, it's, it's a deadly moment. And like, it's like, it's not the woman. It's the fact that it's.

• 13:19Andrew Santino?

It's just written poorly or something is not aligning, but you casted her because you liked her. Like, the first sitcom I ever did, a girl who's still a good friend of mine today, who went on to be a very successful actress regardless. But the phone call on the way home broke my heart because she was a bad read. Um, not just her, by the way, the rhythm of the whole read wasn't great. And she was like, do you think? And me and another friend of ours, we were like, I think it's just the rhythm was bad, dude. I, I honestly, and I genuinely believe that. I wasn't lying to her. I was saying like, it's just nothing, it was kind of clunky.

• 13:50Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 13:51Andrew Santino?

But she was like, I stood out as bad. And I, and I remember like feeling her through the phone being like, fuck, am I gonna get fired? And I was like, dude, that's not even a thing. That's a thing. That's not a thing, you know, I was, I'm also, I was young. I was like, that's not, that's not gonna fucking-

• 14:05Speaker 05

No, of course they know that she's good. They already saw her.

• 14:07Andrew Santino?

They're fine. Yeah, they say, right. Yeah. Boom. They fucking axed her and then they put someone else and it was just, it was so dark. Because we all were kinda, you're kinda stunned by it and, and much like the mafia in the fucking, like my, it's, it's like that scene in Casino when, uh, when, when Pesci like accosts those two guys and he's like, no, no, no, they're across the street. And he's like, well, I thought he was over here. He's like, no, he's not. We're over here now.

• 14:31Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 14:31Andrew Santino?

That's what it feels like. When someone's new, they're like, no, no, we're over here. And we don't talk about it. Like, nah, we're over here now.

• 14:36Speaker 05

This is, you know, I got fired from one of the first movies I ever did. It was an Eddie Murphy movie called Meet Dave.

• 14:44Andrew Santino?

  Oh, I remember Meet Dave.

• 14:45Speaker 05

Meet Dave. Premise was like Eddie Murphy is in a Eddie Murphy spaceship. So the spaceship is in the shape of Eddie Murphy.

• 14:51Andrew Santino?

  Eddie Murphy's head, right?

• 14:53Speaker 05

Yeah. So like, I got brought in. I was playing this character Lieutenant Buttes, right? And so when Eddie Murphy, the spaceship crashes on earth, uh, I go, you know, sir, we had a gas leak. It was silent, but not deadly. Hilarious, right? And so, you know, and I can't mess it up. You know, I go in and I do it and, um, and I feel the director like more military. I'm like, okay, sir, we had a gas leak. It was silent, but not deadly. Again, he's like, nah, looser. I'm like, sir, we had a gas leak. It was silent, but not deadly. You know, I'm just, and I could see him just like not happy and walk off set.

• 15:30Andrew Santino?

  Oh shit.

• 15:30Speaker 05

Now I'm on a platform that's like 10 feet in the air. So I can't even like move around. I'm like kinda trapped. And then the A D, the assistant director comes over and says, hey, we're gonna take a quick break. Why don't you go back to your trailer? And my heart's racing. I was like, what the fuck? I know I fucked up. I know. How did I fuck this up? Like it's silent, not deadly.

• 15:47Andrew Santino?

  It's one line.

• 15:47Speaker 05

I'm not even, I'm not even acting with anybody.

• 15:50Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 15:51Speaker 05

And I'm in a trailer, very much like the ones that we were in, those very narrow ones where the bathroom's at the end of it, they get this knock on my door, these two guys come in. And when the two guys enter, it actually pushes me over the toilet. So now I'm like, kind of standing over the toilet. And these guys are like, oh, man, this is, uh, one of the worst parts of the job. We're gonna recast you.

• 16:11Andrew Santino?

  Fuck me.

• 16:11Speaker 05

And I was like, oh, no, and you just feel like, like, you feel like a piece of shit. Like, you feel like, what did I do? Cause it wasn't, like, ultimately, now as I've gotten older, I'm like, it's not me. It's like, something has happened here that is not, that's not working.

• 16:27Andrew Santino?

Other things are at play, yeah.

• 16:28Speaker 05

And what I found out was at play was, uh, the director was like, he was like, dude, I thought you were a fat guy. From your headshot, you look like a fat guy. I need a fat guy to be the ass. And I'm like, uh huh, okay, sure.

• 16:41Andrew Santino?

You do not look like a fat guy.

• 16:43Speaker 05

I don't think, I looked at my headshot, I was like, I don't think I look like a fat guy from my headshot. But, uh, but like, but it can wreck you early on.

• 16:51Andrew Santino?

  Oh, yeah.

• 16:52Speaker 05

To be like, but again, you make these changes and people make these choices. And, uh, yeah, you think like, a lot of times, when you think, when you see something on TV, or you see something in a movie, you're like, why did they make that choice? And it's because somebody had a terrible idea. Or there was like, somebody, I, I used to run, like, a focus group for movies when I was back in New York. And you get the dumbest people in there.

• 17:15Andrew Santino?

As like a day gig or something?

• 17:16Speaker 05

  Yeah, the day gig, yeah.

• 17:17Andrew Santino?

  Oh, that's cool.

• 17:17Speaker 05

It was, um, I remember I did it, I only did it for one movie. Uh, it was a Danny DeVito, Queen Latifah movie called, like, Living Out Loud.

• 17:25Andrew Santino?

You kidding me? I have it on DVD right there. I can't stop watching it.

• 17:28Speaker 05

It's, uh, no, it's a banger. And I remember they kept on changing the movie, and the movie felt like, one time it was like, a romance movie. One time it was a straight up comedy, they kept on changing it. But it was based on, like, the dumbest people, like, I didn't know, like, well, he said he produces records, but we never see him producing records, like, oh, you wanna see that? You wanna see more of that? Like, it doesn't make a difference.

• 17:53Andrew Santino?

  Do you need that?

• 17:53Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 17:53Andrew Santino?

It's like, for the story? That needed to like kind of like, all right, well, we'll fucking do it.

• 17:58Speaker 05

It's like you get like people like your parents, like I watching movies with my parents is like, well, who's that? What's going on?

• 18:04Andrew Santino?

Oh dude, don't even, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't. I, I refuse, I refuse. That drives me not anymore when I go home and I'm like, okay, look, we don't talk until it's over. Then we can ask all the questions.

• 18:17Speaker 05

My, I saw TikTok the other day that made me laugh. This kid had a projector and he projected it.

• 18:23Andrew Santino?

  Oh, I saw that.

• 18:24Speaker 05

  It was amazing.

• 18:25Andrew Santino?

Oh, that was so funny to me, dude.

• 18:26Speaker 05

He was projecting answers to questions that his mom might have. It's like, yes, that's Brad Pitt. He was married to Angelina Jolie, he's not anymore.

• 18:35Andrew Santino?

So good. I saw him, he was holding it on his lap and his face was so numb. Cause like he knew it was coming. Oh, that was brilliant, dude.

• 18:42Speaker 05

  So great.

• 18:43Andrew Santino?

So brilliant. Um, one more thing I want to ask you about in the film world, then we can talk about fun life or real life or the TV world. You, I, I feel like maybe I'm totally wrong, but I feel like you found your stride. Comedically, business wise, the league kind of did a thing for me, for you.

• 19:02Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 19:02Andrew Santino?

Where I was like, oh, this really got to showcase how funny you guys are together.

• 19:07Speaker 05

The league was one of the best.

• 19:10Andrew Santino?

Except for working with Jeff Scheer, who's a real big piece of shit.

• 19:13Speaker 05

  Oh, man.

• 19:13Andrew Santino?

Real big piece of shit. I love Jeff so much.

• 19:16Speaker 05

Wait, how do you know Jeff?

• 19:17Andrew Santino?

  He did Dave on FX.

• 19:19Speaker 05

Oh shit, right. Of course, I'm so sorry.

• 19:20Andrew Santino?

He did and he didn't. Like, he, he produced it, but the problem was.

• 19:25Speaker 05

You got a lot of personalities and.

• 19:26Andrew Santino?

Well, yeah, and he was also doing Curb simultaneously.

• 19:30Speaker 05

Yeah, he was doing like multiple things.

• 19:32Andrew Santino?

It was a nightmare. He would leave and be like, I have to go do, and then the second season, I thought, the second season will be different. And then it was like, I have to go do.

• 19:38Speaker 05

He's always, he's always working on a million things. He's one of the best. It was so fun though, because I like Dave Byrd and like Dave Byrd like was a, him and Jeff are a good pair because I actually think that like. Like, there's a humanity, like Jeff is a joke machine.

• 19:55Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 19:55Speaker 05

And it's like, I just wanna do jokes, jokes, jokes. And I think Dave was like, I want humanity too.

• 20:00Andrew Santino?

  Story and shape.

• 20:01Speaker 05

Yeah, and so it really, I think that, that's why I think that show, you're all so good in it. It's like, um, but that show, The League, was really fun because it was a chance for Jeff to kinda do his version of Curb. Without Larry.

• 20:15Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 20:15Speaker 05

Like Larry is very much dictates Curb, but they work together as a, as a unit. But like this allowed Jeff to kind of hit more things that he wanted to hit, especially with his whole background in fantasy football. And that was a great, like, I don't know, you just look for opportunities to get people who champion what you do. And you never knew that, I never knew that show was gonna take off the way it did. And the fact that it's still is like a part of the thing, you know, that people get. And that's, the thing that bums me out is, you know, when we were first on, you know, so many people didn't watch the show because they're like, oh, it's football, fantasy football. I don't play fantasy football. I won't like it. And then as the show went on for like seven years, you're like, oh, I wish I would've known, I wish I would've known.

• 20:59Speaker 05

And we kinda got more and more audience. I think like people have like found the show more and more. But we were getting, it was like one of the best things is watch a show like kinda grow and feel like, oh, we actually are getting people to like, you know, that gets more and more successful every year.

• 21:13Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 21:13Speaker 05

It was one of those crazy.

• 21:14Andrew Santino?

It stays in the cultural zeitgeist. You've done so much since then. But it's just funny to see, like, I still see League stuff pop up like.

• 21:21Speaker 05

  Oh, yeah.

• 21:21Andrew Santino?

On an Instagram reel or a TikTok or, it's funny how some things really take, that were built for the internet before the internet could really have them. It's really interesting.

• 21:30Speaker 05

Like, I think the best part about The League was they allowed us to create our characters. And we improvised, we were, it was a very collaborative show, but at the root of it, like you have Jeff and Jackie, who were the showrunners.

• 21:44Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 21:44Speaker 05

And they just, they knew what they wanted. So they always guided us in the right direction. And the show was just, it pushed those limits and pushed those boundaries and FX that you do whatever you wanted to do.

• 21:55Andrew Santino?

Yeah, they don't give a shit. It's great. Well, I mean, they care a lot, but they just want you to make your version of little fantasy.

• 22:01Speaker 05

I always felt like there was an issue, again, sorry, this is too inside baseball, but there was always a thing about FX I thought was really good, which is like, we'll give you enough rope to hang yourself, and if you do hang yourself, they're like, nah, well, it was their fault. And if you succeed, they're like, hey, it was our, we let them do it.

• 22:16Andrew Santino?

Put you out there. And if you do hang yourself, we're gonna air it. I just want to let you know, it is, it's great for numbers. We have to show, we have to show the fall. We have to.

• 22:24Speaker 01

  In here, we pour whiskey.

Here to tell you about Lucy. You know about Lucy. You know about that girl Lucy. 100% pure nicotine, always tobacco free. Lucy breakers are nicotine pouches with extra surprise. Each pouch holds a capsule that can be broken, opened to release extra flavor and hydration. Delicious, by the way. You pop one of these Lucys in and you're go-go-go gadget. You're feeling it, my friends. Lucy is great. It comes in all different MGs, different amounts of nicotine and it's just nicotine in there. So you're not getting any of that other junk that is being pushed in other stuff. I do love Lucy's, the OG. I like me some winter green. Like it's the middle of winter and I'm cozied up next to a fireplace, pop in a Lucy, snuggle up and listen to that thing crackle while I stare at the presents.

• 24:38Andrew Santino?

Waiting for Santa Claus to come down the chimney. If you're someone that uses nicotine products, why not give Lucy a try? Let's level up your nicotine routine with Lucy. Go to lucy.co/whiskey and use the promo code WHISKY to get 20% off your first order. Lucy has a 30-day refund policy if you change your mind. Again, that's lucy.co and code is WHISKY to get 20% off. • 25:09Andrew Santino?

I asked you before you came in, I saw you're a Clippers fan and I want to say, my first experience of the Intuit Dome, I did get spoiled. I did have, I had floor seats, which was insane. I got gifted, you know, that packet, the, I don't know what the lounge is underneath, you know, and

• 25:28Speaker 05

Well, yeah, they have these like a beautiful club.

• 25:30Andrew Santino?

It's incredible. And the players run through the middle of the club. It's the wildest shit. You're like, you're like eating dumplings. And then you'll just, you'll just see James Harden just walk by.

• 25:40Speaker 05

This is what I hate. I love the idea of that in concept because like it's so cool.

• 25:45Andrew Santino?

  It is cool.

• 25:46Speaker 05

But imagine like, I mean, I guess we do it sometimes too, but it sucks for these players.

• 25:51Andrew Santino?

  For him, sucks.

• 25:52Speaker 05

Like you gotta run through like all these dudes eating dumplings. And they do it, I think in Denver too. And like in Denver, one of these spots, people say racist shit.

• 26:02Andrew Santino?

Oh, people say wild shit. I'm sure.

• 26:04Speaker 05

It's like, it's too close. Like sometimes it's like, and it's like, you don't want to get in those, like just let me get out to the court.

• 26:09Andrew Santino?

  A little bit of separation.

• 26:10Speaker 05

Yeah. Because I remember when I first heard how they were going to do it, it was almost be like a glass wall. Like they're gonna, like you could see them, like, like, you know, you could see them on the other side. Like it look, don't touch kind of a thing. But yeah, to be like, I don't know, man.

• 26:23Andrew Santino?

  It's a little too, it's a little too close.

• 26:25Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 26:25Andrew Santino?

They walk right next to you. You have season tickets or no?

• 26:27Speaker 05

I do. I have season tickets. I got, uh, I have nice seats that are affordable and fun.

• 26:33Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 26:33Speaker 05

Uh, that, that no one will complain about. Like, my wife is like, wait, what are you, you getting season tickets? I'm like, yeah, yeah, but it's gonna be okay.

• 26:40Andrew Santino?

This is an interesting play because, look, you guys are both, you and your wife are both very successful, very talented people. No, everyone, no one would be like shocked if you had very, very nice seats, but there is a play in Hollywood that's like, you don't want to show off.

• 26:54Speaker 05

  My, my play is this.

• 26:55Andrew Santino?

You don't want to show off, but everyone knows you guys can have nice seats.

• 26:59Speaker 05

But you know, my, my thing is this, I want to be able to afford these seats no matter what's going on in my career.

• 27:06Andrew Santino?

  Right, right, right.

• 27:06Speaker 05

Cause it's like, there's always ups and downs. It's like, at the end of the day, it's like, yeah, yeah, sell those tickets.

• 27:11Andrew Santino?

Yeah, you sell them, right, yeah.

• 27:12Speaker 05

Yeah, like, no one wants, like, it's like, you know, so I can justify having it. Cause I think that, like, man, you know, when you get, you could, you, I'm sure you've seen it a bunch too. Like, people get big and they get famous and they fucking make dumb decisions right out, right out of the gate, as if that money will always be there. And then, but it may, it may not. Just, you can be conservative. I remember, I knew a, a, a friend.

• 27:33Andrew Santino?

This is a good fall from grace story coming, I can hear it.

• 27:36Speaker 05

  She got a show.

• 27:38Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 27:39Speaker 05

Good show. Uh, like, in your mind, you're big, this is gonna be a successful show. Like, everything was lined up.

• 27:45Speaker 05

Upon pickup of the show, where they say, okay, we're gonna make a season of the show, she bought two cars.

• 27:50Andrew Santino?

  Two?

• 27:51Speaker 05

Two. One for the weekend, one for the weekdays.

• 27:54Andrew Santino?

  Lady, this is crazy.

• 27:56Speaker 05

What are you doing? One for the weekend?

• 27:58Andrew Santino?

Do you have one friend with a brain that's like, don't do that, Sarah, that's a terrible idea?

• 28:02Speaker 05

But that's like, you see people make these choices, you're like, uh-huh.

• 28:05Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 28:06Speaker 05

I mean, I say, people buy houses like, as if like, you can afford that down payment at all times.

• 28:13Andrew Santino?

That's the craziest, the buying of the house right when you get a series was always wild to me, and I knew people that did it. But I came from such, um, uh, uh... I just came from a world of like, that's not what we do type of stuff, you know?

• 28:26Speaker 05

  A hundred percent.

• 28:27Andrew Santino?

My parents were very like, I grew up Chicago and my parents both worked and they both worked my whole life. And so, we never had like, you know, we were never struggling, but it was never like, we could just do things on a whim and it was, it was very much like, you should stick to the script because just in case.

• 28:44Speaker 05

No, I mean, I live in fear of that. Like, it's like, like, I have kids now too. So now, everything takes, like, now I'm like, fuck, I, you know, it's like.

• 28:51Andrew Santino?

  They take precedence always, right?

• 28:52Speaker 05

Yeah, right. It's like, but it's like, you gotta make sure that you can, like, I wanna make sure I can get their soccer jerseys when they go, you know? It's like, I don't wanna be one of those parents. By the way, I have to go to all these like AAU basketball games where they charge you 20 bucks to park and then 20 dollars to get in to watch your kid do your thing.

• 29:07Andrew Santino?

But your kid can hoop though.

• 29:08Speaker 05

Yeah, I mean, he's out there, he's doing it.

• 29:09Andrew Santino?

Obviously, if he's, if he's running, that's great.

• 29:11Speaker 05

My, my kid is upset, he's 10.

• 29:14Andrew Santino?

  Oh, okay, okay.

• 29:15Speaker 05

He's young. He's been doing it since, like, he's been just non-stop. He's committed to it. He'll wake up at like, 5:00 in the morning and shoot baskets outside.

• 29:23Andrew Santino?

  That's awesome.

• 29:24Speaker 05

Which is great for him, terrible for me, because all he hears, kunk, kunk, kunk. Just hitting the rim, hitting everything in the morning, like, oh, I never.

• 29:34Andrew Santino?

Why don't you go shoot at the neighbor's house down the street?

• 29:35Speaker 05

  Yeah, go down there.

• 29:36Andrew Santino?

Go down the road. Shoot down there, they have a hoop.

• 29:38Speaker 05

But I, I, I think it's also just like, yeah, my parents, my parents, both my parents work. My mom's 75. And she's like, I'm retired, and then got a job that's bigger than the job that she's ever had.

• 29:50Andrew Santino?

Yeah, that's what, that's the symptom, right?

• 29:51Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 29:52Andrew Santino?

This is this, um, and it's a generational thing too. I think like, my parents' generation is all, it's close in age. And I just think they, you know, I think for them, they worked and committed to jobs usually. And my parents both worked like kinda corporate jobs for so long that when it was done, it was almost like, well, what do we do? I mean, we wanna enjoy our life, but what do we do?

• 30:12Speaker 05

I, like, it's so funny to watch my, my dad and mom like try to find hobbies, you know?

• 30:18Andrew Santino?

  It's so funny.

• 30:19Speaker 05

Like, they're like, like, well, what do you like? And it's. Asking them what they like is like I've I've asked them to tell me like very detailed things about their sex life. It's like, it's like, oh, what do you mean? I mean, I like.

• 30:32Andrew Santino?

Not really comfortable answering that right now in front of you. I mean, and your grand, your children are here.

• 30:37Speaker 05

It's like, it's so funny that they, yeah, like I, they don't have any.

• 30:43Andrew Santino?

  There's no hobbies.

• 30:44Speaker 05

  No hobbies.

• 30:44Andrew Santino?

Yeah, my parents don't really have hobbies either. I mean, my mom sees her sisters and her grandma's girlfriends. They do like, she does that kind of thing where she's like, we'll have lunch and da da. So she has more freedom to go see people. But I keep bugging both of them. I'm like, you got, get a thing, get a little.

• 31:01Speaker 05

Yeah, do something. And my parents seem to be, they, my dad likes to complain about the people that are coming to stay at their house. Like that, that seems like his hobby is entertaining people that are coming to stay that he doesn't want to stay. But yet he's got a lot of things planned for them.

• 31:18Andrew Santino?

We have, are we brothers? That's the same, we have the same dad. My dad like is, he's so annoyed that all of these details have to take place in order for like this. But he also is like, can't wait to have you guys. Like so excited to have people over.

• 31:29Speaker 05

She's gonna take you on a train. We're gonna go on to the city, we're gonna go see some stuff.

• 31:32Andrew Santino?

But also super upset that he has to organize all the shit.

• 31:34Speaker 05

I mean, can't believe they're coming. I mean, you know, we're, I just say, we just need a, we need a break.

• 31:38Andrew Santino?

He's like, the errands that I have to run. It's like, you don't have to do anything. You really don't. Everyone else can do shit too.

• 31:44Speaker 05

It's so funny. My mom moved out to LA and.

• 31:47Andrew Santino?

Oh, that's, that's gotta be great.

• 31:48Speaker 05

It's, it is interesting, right? Cause it's sort of like, I'm nervous. Like, I don't know if I would live in LA if we didn't do this. Like, you know, like, right? So it's like, you have to kind of be here. And so my mom moved out here and I'm like, that's gonna be a little tough for you because it's like, you don't really have friends out here. But it's like, but you love to golf and you love the beach. So.

• 32:08Andrew Santino?

  Perfect.

• 32:08Speaker 05

Life's gonna be good. My mom, my mom has been here maybe eight years. She has never gone playing golf and she's never gone to the beach. I'm like, why, why are you not doing this? And she's like, I don't know. It's just so, it's so far. I'm like, it's like, there's a golf course.

• 32:24Andrew Santino?

  Every 10 feet.

• 32:25Speaker 05

  Every 10.

• 32:26Andrew Santino?

They're all over the place. There's, it's so easy to golf here. I mean, especially if you can golf in the middle of the week because you don't have a job. Job and you can just go play in the middle of the day.

• 32:33Speaker 05

You know what I love? I live close to a par three.

• 32:36Andrew Santino?

  Okay.

• 32:37Speaker 05

In, in like Glendale and it's like, that's the best. I mean, like it's, it's the best in the sense of, I can just kind of go over there and spend like 90 minutes.

• 32:46Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, just bounce around?

• 32:47Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 32:47Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, it's super fun.

• 32:48Speaker 05

It's not like, you know, and I'm just starting to like learn a little bit more. So I'm having fun with it.

• 32:52Andrew Santino?

Oh, you're trying, are you playing a little?

• 32:53Speaker 05

Yeah, cuz I was like, I, I mean, this is gonna sound dumb, but I went to Top, I, I would, I would shoot her, like I would, I would just go to driving ranges. I took a couple of lessons a couple of times and I was like, I really like it, but again, I was taking lessons when I had kids. It was like, no one's gonna let me out to do this. Yeah. But then I went to Top Golf and I was like, alright, this is kind of fun. I'm like, where can I fit this in? And then, and then I kind of broke open to this par three and then I go with my kids a little bit and then it's like.

• 33:21Andrew Santino?

  Oh, you're getting there, dude.

• 33:22Speaker 05

  Yeah, I'm trying.

• 33:23Andrew Santino?

You're catching the bug. You'll be sick. Soon you'll be disgusting and sick like me. I'm sick. Like I'm, I'm obsessed. We don't have kids. So like I get the freedom. If I'm off and I'm not working, I just get to go disappear. And for all my friends that never understood why I like golf so much, and then we get older.

• 33:37Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 33:38Andrew Santino?

And they're like, oh dude, you're just hanging out outside with a couple of friends for a couple of hours. I'm like, that's.

• 33:44Speaker 05

  That's the best part.

• 33:44Andrew Santino?

  Really what it is.

• 33:45Speaker 05

  It's just basically.

• 33:46Andrew Santino?

Just hanging with a couple of buddies.

• 33:47Speaker 05

Hanging with an activity attached to it. It's like, and I love that.

• 33:51Andrew Santino?

It's like darts at a bar. It's like, I don't give a shit about the darts. We're just doing a thing while we're having a drink to goof off.

• 33:57Speaker 05

Well, that's I feel like what I love about doing like live shows is like, June's like, well, you need to hang out with your friends. I'm like, that is hanging out with my friends.

• 34:05Andrew Santino?

  A hundred percent.

• 34:05Speaker 05

Like it's like, the show is a part of the hang. It's like you're, you're there and you get to see people. It was so fun. We went on the road with a bunch of.

• 34:14Andrew Santino?

You just did a tour, didn't you?

• 34:15Speaker 05

Did a tour. Yeah, we just did like, I did half doing my podcast and then I did half just doing improv with a bunch of like, too many people. We went on the road with 10 people.

• 34:25Andrew Santino?

  What?

• 34:25Speaker 05

And it was so much fun.

• 34:27Andrew Santino?

That is kind of cool though.

• 34:28Speaker 05

Financially doesn't make sense. We're like arcade fire, you know, but it was like.

• 34:32Andrew Santino?

We all made 13 bucks tonight.

• 34:33Speaker 05

Yeah. And it's like, but there was like something fun about, I think there was an energy where. It wasn't that expensive to go out. We did like these big venues and I was like, oh, it's so fun to just hang with your friends. It's like be around, get dinner, go out, like you're in a different city.

• 34:49Andrew Santino?

The late night getting dinner after the shows and goofing and stuff, that's my, that is the most fun by far.

• 34:53Speaker 05

The, yeah, it's the best part of.

• 34:56Andrew Santino?

How many cities did you do?

• 34:57Speaker 05

We just did, I mean, I did in total six cities and then with that group of nine or 10, we did three. We did

• 35:03Andrew Santino?

  Awesome.

• 35:03Speaker 05

New York, two shows in, uh, well, two shows in New York, one show in Boston and then one show in DC.

• 35:08Andrew Santino?

Where'd you play in New York?

• 35:09Speaker 05

Uh, we did Bell House back to back shows and then we did Wilbur in Boston and then the Lincoln in DC.

• 35:15Andrew Santino?

  Ooh, awesome dude.

• 35:16Speaker 05

  It was really fun.

• 35:17Andrew Santino?

Wilbur's my favorite too. I'm playing that next year.

• 35:19Speaker 05

Wilbur is the, like, for Boston, I also like, I love that vibe. I love those people. It's

• 35:26Andrew Santino?

  It's very Boston.

• 35:27Speaker 05

  Yeah, really Boston.

• 35:28Andrew Santino?

It's very Boston. Some of the shows, I'm like, you guys are a little too Boston right now.

• 35:31Speaker 05

  I mean,

• 35:32Andrew Santino?

  Chill out.

• 35:33Speaker 05

Them and I would say like Philly, we just did a show at the Miller Theater out there in Philly and like Philly, we were like, somebody asked us, we were talking to the audience and someone was like, you do the wobble and it's like that song, the wobble. And I was like, oh, well, how, how do you do the wobble? And he's like, I'll show you. And we started playing the wobble and the entire audience started dancing. And my wife saw this guy, she's like, wait, what's going on up there? This guy had a fake leg. He started spinning his leg around doing a wobble and it went, and then took it off and started waving around. I was like, man, Philadelphia is the fucking best.

• 36:08Andrew Santino?

  I love Philly dude.

• 36:08Speaker 05

And it's like, you just don't get that. Like you don't get that in LA. I love LA, but you don't get that in LA shows. And even DC, I love DC too, but it's like, it's a more, we're here to see a show.

• 36:17Andrew Santino?

Way more, we're here to see a show. Yeah. Dude, we played, we played, um, Bobby and I did, uh, the, the, uh, daughters of the revolution.

• 36:27Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 36:27Andrew Santino?

  Where Eddie Murphy filmed.

• 36:29Speaker 05

Yes, I did that show. I did that venue with them. So amazing.

• 36:32Andrew Santino?

Dude, it's incredible, but it is very much a show, show. It feels like a room for something more important.

• 36:37Speaker 05

Yeah. It's like, that's the thing. I was like, they are, they take their night out seriously.

• 36:42Andrew Santino?

  Yes.

• 36:43Speaker 05

And there's something about that where you're like, okay.

• 36:44Andrew Santino?

  Yes.

• 36:45Speaker 05

Like, what is it for you doing like these, because I mean, you do everything. Like you do small rooms, you do big rooms. Yeah. Cause it's like, you have to do, I think small is always great. And then like, you know, cause I'm sure you're trying out stuff, but then like, what's that difference? In going into like this big thing? Do you feel like, like are there any rules that you take with you? Like, cause it's, I, I always find like, When you're in a small environment, you can almost feel the entire audience with you.

• 37:12Andrew Santino?

  Oh, yeah.

• 37:13Speaker 05

And then when you're in this bigger thing, it's like, it's, you know, you're-

• 37:16Andrew Santino?

It's more you're playing for the, it's more you're like playing for the, for, um, for the universal whole. Like, you're almost like, I wanna, I wanna make sure everyone is on this similar page where the small rooms are kinda great. It's almost more fun when not everyone gets it in a small room and it's like little pieces of laugh and like this guy likes it and that chunk likes it and then she's cracking up over it. That feels so much more playful and fun. The big rooms are so performative. It's such a show.

• 37:42Speaker 05

  Right.

• 37:43Andrew Santino?

You know, like it's such a, I'm doing a show, I gotta do a show, it's a show, cuz you can't really connect, unfortunately. I mean, I love it, but there's no connection.

• 37:50Speaker 05

No, you're, you're kind of forced away from it in a way.

• 37:54Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, you have to.

• 37:55Speaker 05

  Yeah, cuz like-

• 37:56Andrew Santino?

It can't be intimate. There is nothing intimate about it. Even if you're, you know, the greatest performers, they somehow transform those rooms into very intimate venues, you know, they are unable to like lock people in a little bit more, but I always feel like when you get out there, you gotta put on a fucking show. There's eight thousand people.

• 38:14Speaker 05

Well, that's the thing. It's like, that, like, I don't know, this idea of, it is a show and it should be a show, right? Like, it has to be, like, and it's like, and, and it's gotta be performative and it can't be small and it's, I just always trying to find those like different levels and different things. Cuz it is, it's like, I love trying to do something that's a little bit more casual and free and fun, but I guess maybe that's what like podcasting is to a certain extent too. It's like, it allows you to be a lot more, I mean, you're not doing it to an audience, but you're doing it like, but it allows you to be a little bit more personal, but cuz it's like, just coming off all those bigger shows, you're used to, I don't know, it's just a different, it's, like, yeah.

• 38:49Andrew Santino?

It's a different animal, for sure. Well, and we played, like, when I do, you know, like, I'm gonna do the Met in Philly, and I'll do the Beacon in New York by myself, and like, then when Bob and I play, we play even bigger venues.

• 39:00Speaker 05

By the way, Beacon's a great, I mean-

• 39:01Andrew Santino?

  Beacon's unbelievable.

• 39:02Speaker 05

  Love that, yeah.

• 39:03Andrew Santino?

Yeah, it's so beautiful. And then when we, him and I play, like, yeah, Sydney, we did eighty-five hundred, and Dallas, we did sixty-four hundred, and those rooms are incredible. You're shocked that many people wanna see you. It's awesome.

• 39:15Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 39:15Andrew Santino?

But yeah, you do change your attitude. Your attitude changes about it immediately.

• 39:20Speaker 05

What was the switch for you? Like, when did you feel like that, like, when you get into that vibe where you're like, oh shit, like, we're doing eighty-five thousand? Like, like, when did you, like, what was like the first moment that you kinda hit, like, oh?

• 39:31Andrew Santino?

I think the first time that I realized that, like, we, the show was growing rapidly was like the very beginning of the tour. Um, that we did last year. We would like sell these venues out like within like a day. And I was, and I, I don't know, it just kind of, I've never, as a touring stand up solo, you know, selling out is great, but doing it in a day felt like, well, that's like a glitch in the matrix. Like, how did it's, it just, something else changed in my mind. We're like, how did that happen so fast? That's so strange that that many people.

• 40:02Speaker 05

I just don't even know how people know about it. Like.

• 40:04Andrew Santino?

Yeah, how do they all know? Yeah. No, that's even more, I mean, I see, but then I see it from the outside. Like Shane Gillis, who is probably the most famous touring comedian right now. I mean, this dude is doing arena shows and he's selling out genuinely the same day he puts it on sale. An arena of fucking people.

• 40:23Speaker 05

I mean, that, and that is so wild.

• 40:25Andrew Santino?

  Where the Clippers play.

• 40:27Speaker 05

  I mean, right, yeah.

• 40:27Andrew Santino?

He sells out within a day. And you think about it, you're like, that, the Clippers don't sell out the same day. You know what I mean?

• 40:33Speaker 05

  No, of course.

• 40:34Andrew Santino?

  It's wild.

• 40:35Speaker 05

It like, that's the thing that's so, I just can't like, I even can't wrap my head around it. Like I've seen, I've seen a couple of arena comedy shows and that thing is, that's a weird.

• 40:46Andrew Santino?

That's a totally different beast. Yeah.

• 40:47Speaker 05

I saw Kevin Hart do Staples, you know, big. It's a giant, but it's big.

• 40:52Andrew Santino?

  It's big.

• 40:52Speaker 05

But you know, it's like, and I've seen like, and what I thought was so good about when he did it was I feel like he had like these, you know, everyone has these video projectors and stuff like that, of course, but he had like the visual aids on the visual.

• 41:05Andrew Santino?

  Oh, yeah, dude.

• 41:06Speaker 05

He was talking about like going to like, deal with like a raccoon by his like, uh, like his garbage cans and like, and there's like a scene like filling in.

• 41:14Andrew Santino?

  Of raccoons, yeah.

• 41:15Speaker 05

Yeah, I was like, oh, this is kind of, I was like, yeah, he's on screens, interestingly.

• 41:18Andrew Santino?

Well, it's such a big room. I don't know how else you fill the space sometimes in those things. Like Louis managed to tour arenas and it's just a man and a microphone and he's so centered too. He's not really animated. So when you see that, I'm always impressed. Like I, I played a couple arenas with other people. It's daunting to me. It's almost like. I don't even know how to appeal half of you, let alone fucking an arena of human beings.

• 41:41Speaker 05

It's almost like you can't take it in. Like, what's the, have you ever been nervous stepping out?

• 41:47Andrew Santino?

Oh, yeah. The first time I ever did him, I was fucking losing my mind. I was so scared. Cause I thought, if this is mediocre, like if it's just okay, it is going to hurt so much. You know what I mean? Like, I'd rather eat shit and it be like funny than I'm bombing.

• 42:02Speaker 05

  Right, right, right.

• 42:02Andrew Santino?

Then it's kind of funny, then you can play with it.

• 42:04Speaker 05

  Right, right.

• 42:04Andrew Santino?

But if you're doing like, okay, holy fuck dude. Grab the sword and just, you know, like, give it to me, not sacrifice on stage.

• 42:12Speaker 05

It is such an interesting, like, I mean, man, eating shit is every now and then.

• 42:17Andrew Santino?

  It's pretty fun, man.

• 42:18Speaker 05

It is fun. Like, it's like, it is, it's like this thing of, it reminds you like, why you do it.

• 42:24Andrew Santino?

  Yes.

• 42:25Speaker 05

You know, it's like, you're, oh, I can't break through on this thing. And I'm not doing stand up, but it's like, but these, every now and then, it's, it's that shock that you're like, oh, right, right. I have to like, yeah, I think, it's like, one of those gives you a reverberation for like, oh, oh, why I remember.

• 42:42Andrew Santino?

Back to the drawing board. Yeah. Back to the change. I want to ask you something. You're, Al Madrigal.

• 42:48Speaker 05

  Oh, yeah.

• 42:49Andrew Santino?

A buddy has a great, a great phrase that I quote all the time. And you've broken this rule, but he always says to me, when I was a younger comic.

• 42:58Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 42:58Andrew Santino?

He was like, are you dating other comedians? I was like, I mean, yeah, I mean, every young comic, everyone dates each other. And he's like, all right, man, but when you get older, you know, you know, when you settle down, there's only one headshot per household. That was like, that was his law, that was his rule of thumb. But you, but you've managed genuinely.

• 43:15Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 43:16Andrew Santino?

To be with someone who is significantly more talented than you and cooler.

• 43:21Speaker 05

Yeah, more attractive, everything. Yeah, all the things.

• 43:23Andrew Santino?

  But it's working. It's amazing.

• 43:25Speaker 05

You know what I think is so cool about?

• 43:27Andrew Santino?

Actors and to, to, it's hard.

• 43:30Speaker 05

There's a couple of things that I think make it work. Uh, one, we've been together for a long time. Right? We're together and we're not in the same exact lane.

• 43:40Andrew Santino?

  No.

• 43:40Speaker 05

Ultimately, like, I mean, at the end of the day.

• 43:42Andrew Santino?

You're not going off. For the same roles?

• 43:43Speaker 05

Well, that's like, we're never going off of the same roles. But like, you know, there is some, there is some truth to that, too. It's like, I can't, there's no competition with somebody that I can't be in competition with. Like, you know, it's like,

• 43:53Andrew Santino?

  That's true.

• 43:54Speaker 05

You know, and, um, and also what I do and what she does, like June would, like she goes on the road when we do How Did This Get Made? But she wouldn't go off and do like an improv show. She's not doing like, she just, she's a comedian, she's an actress, she's everything. But we have enough of, like, we are different enough people. We don't have to travel in the same circle. And when we work together, it's actually fun because we get to be together. And I think our schedules are so kind of crazy, you want that person to understand. Like, it's like, I don't, I don't want to be wherever the fuck I am. I don't want to be in Atlanta,

• 44:33Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 44:33Speaker 05

You know, three days before Christmas, but like, if that's the way it's going.

• 44:37Andrew Santino?

  That's the way it's going.

• 44:37Speaker 05

That's the way it's going. And it's like, and there's no guilt there. And I feel like that's a good thing. I almost can't see it the other way, like in the sense of, how do you understand my schedule? Like, oh, I'm up at five and I'm back at like, you know, I'm missing, you know, it's like,

• 44:51Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 44:52Speaker 05

And that's, you know, so it's, we've been together a long time. We talk a lot.

• 44:58Speaker 05

But yeah, I think there's, and we also like support each other. There's only like, we only, the, the only person is gonna like really understand like what we're dealing with is each other, you know, like on some level, you know?

• 45:07Andrew Santino?

Yeah, that's true. I do thank my wife often because I, I say like, I know how shitty these schedules are. Cause she'll occasionally be like, oh, I had to find out where you were off your website. You know, that she'll be like, if she needs a question answered about like, what do, do we have a thing in June? It's like, looking at my website.

• 45:24Speaker 05

  Well, I think that's like,

• 45:24Andrew Santino?

Which is shitty. It's, that's a part of our weird world is that we're, we are just a, we are, we are a subject of the thing. It's like, you have to just move with it. I can't dictate it. It does, really.

• 45:34Speaker 05

Yeah. And I think it's like, and I think that there is, like, you're also like, I think that like it's out of sight, out of mind to a certain extent, too. Like, when I'm off on tour and June's not there, or I'm doing something different, she's not keeping tabs on me. She's like, now where are you at tonight? Like, what's really, we're not even talking about that. It's like, it's, we're talking about whatever we're talking about, life. And it's like, you know, and it's, it's not like, how was the show? It's like, it's not, it's, it's,

• 45:59Andrew Santino?

  Fine.

• 45:59Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 46:00Andrew Santino?

  It's a show.

• 46:00Speaker 05

It's like, yeah, it's like, and I love doing it, but it's like, it's not, yeah, it's not driving the conversation.

• 46:05Andrew Santino?

Of course not. You guys, you said it before, would you leave LA or no?

• 46:09Speaker 05

I I like LA. I do like LA. Like, I just like, there's something about, I think there's always this dream of like, oh, man, I would love to be here or there. But then you have to be there.

• 46:21Andrew Santino?

  You have to be there.

• 46:21Speaker 05

Right. And it's like, and then you have my friends. And my friends are the reason that I love anything. It's like, I just, I think that there's like.

• 46:28Andrew Santino?

No, if they all moved with me.

• 46:30Speaker 05

That's, and that's what we did to LA. Like, we all moved out from New York to LA. It was like the fucking best.

• 46:34Andrew Santino?

Is June from New York too?

• 46:35Speaker 05

  She is, yeah.

• 46:36Andrew Santino?

Yeah, so it's almost like, uh, everyone came, so I don't know where we're gonna go next.

• 46:39Speaker 05

So it's like when we go home for the holidays and stuff like that, like, it's easy. Like, we go to her family, go to my family. It's easy to see everybody. But yeah, it's like, like, I remember we were in, um, I don't know, we were like, outside of like Kentucky or like Louisville or something like that. Oh, this is awesome. Like, look at these houses. Got all this room. And it's like, yeah, but then, no one else is there. Like, you have to start all over. Yeah.

• 47:00Andrew Santino?

  It's just you.

• 47:01Speaker 05

  Yeah, I think it's like.

• 47:02Andrew Santino?

And your horses. But you own thirty horses, don't you?

• 47:04Speaker 05

They're so, and they're so hard to keep in LA.

• 47:07Andrew Santino?

So hard to keep thirty horses out here. Seems foolish, dude.

• 47:10Speaker 05

When I was a kid, uh, we had, um, my stepdad had horses. And we didn't keep them.

• 47:17Andrew Santino?

In New York or you're upstate New York? Oh, Long Island, yeah.

• 47:20Speaker 05

And we were on a, like, a residential block where horses were in our, like, on our lawn. Like, they were like, we had a barn in the back and a corral, like a small corral.

• 47:30Andrew Santino?

  Did anybody else have horses?

• 47:31Speaker 05

  No one.

• 47:32Andrew Santino?

  No, it was you guys.

• 47:32Speaker 05

No one. It was just us. I'm like, how was this even like, we must have been breaking zoning laws.

• 47:38Andrew Santino?

  For sure.

• 47:39Speaker 05

Like, these horses are going around. I was like cleaning, mucking corrals, like, throwing hay down, doing all this shit. But I was like, it was a wild thing to have horses in your backyard.

• 47:48Andrew Santino?

That's so weird. Did he race them? He trained them? He sold them? He bred them?

• 47:52Speaker 05

He, uh, rode them and would hunt with them. So we were like, and, um, but I don't even know if the hunting was like a big part of it. The way that I was told that we got these horses, which is so crazy. He's like, oh, yeah, they were gonna put down these horses from the racetrack, so we just get them. Like, we, I have a guy gets us these horses. I was like, alright.

• 48:10Andrew Santino?

I found this horse in the dumpster behind Einstein's bagels.

• 48:12Speaker 05

Yeah, I was like, alright. Like, I was like, you never ask questions as a kid. You're like, and I don't, like, I don't remember, like. That much riding of horses, it just seemed like as a kid, it was the worst. It's like, you know, you have to go like, go walk the dog, go feed the dog. I was like shoveling grain and like putting Saltlicks in and like brushing horses. It was like awful.

• 48:34Andrew Santino?

And did your mom like horses?

• 48:35Speaker 05

My mom rode horses. Yeah, she rode horses. I rode horses and I was like, I don't like this.

• 48:40Andrew Santino?

I do not like it. Yeah. I don't understand it. I have a whole, I'm doing a bit about it. I have a whole thing about horses now. It's so funny. I don't, I do not understand it. I think it's strange to ride animals now. It's like either kill them and eat them or leave them alone.

• 48:54Speaker 05

It's like, it's a bizarre thing of like how we take, yeah, like it's like, I must ride you. I am going to get.

• 49:03Andrew Santino?

  I mount you.

• 49:04Speaker 05

I'm, it's like, I get it. Like you're Native American. You're like, yeah, this is, this is great. Like, you know.

• 49:09Andrew Santino?

This is how I get around.

• 49:10Speaker 05

This is it. This is my transportation. But now it's like, what am I doing here? But people love them. People love them. I know a lot of people who really love them. And, and you know, I know that like, you know, you talk about like Whitney Cummings and she's gonna be like, oh, the horse therapy.

• 49:22Andrew Santino?

She wants to be a horse, she said. She could, she's gonna transform into a horse.

• 49:25Speaker 05

  I mean.

• 49:25Andrew Santino?

She's starting her transition now into horse lady.

• 49:28Speaker 05

She's growing out of her mane.

• 49:28Andrew Santino?

  To full horse lady.

• 49:29Speaker 05

The, I went, uh, this thing called like, uh, the, uh, wolf, there's a wolf sanctuary in LA. Like outside LA a little bit. And basically what happens is a bunch of dumbasses, like they like, I wanna have a wolf. And then that works out for about two years and the wolf fucking destroys their house.

• 49:49Andrew Santino?

  No shit. Yeah.

• 49:49Speaker 05

And then they, and then they have, help me, I have a wolf. And then these people take these wolves and they put them in a sanctuary instead of killing them. And, um, I did a midnight walk with wolves, like, not midnight, a full moon walk with wolves.

• 50:03Andrew Santino?

  Whoa.

• 50:04Speaker 05

And that was, uh, that was actually like a very cool experience because they're, you know, you're, they're howling, you're walking around. But they're, they're therapy wolves. And so a lot of kids, like inner city kids and cute kids come up or people that have trauma. And they like deal with these animals and they bring them relief.

• 50:23Andrew Santino?

  They're trained wolves.

• 50:24Speaker 05

  They're like, they are.

• 50:25Andrew Santino?

  But they're wild?

• 50:26Speaker 05

They're in a sanctuary. So they're being. Like like some have been abused, some like, you know, it's like, there's a, it was a beautiful experience. Um, but they're not riding them like, you know, but I also think like, yeah, so it's like, yeah.

• 50:39Andrew Santino?

But yet again, they're not riding the wolves.

• 50:41Speaker 05

Yes, the wolves are like, and it's like, hey, we'll take a full moon walk with a wolf. They'll take the most domesticated, the most, you know, and you're not also. You're not having them on a leash. They got their people that are like, you know.

• 50:53Andrew Santino?

  No fear though, huh?

• 50:54Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 50:54Andrew Santino?

There's no fear at all. It's just kind of.

• 50:56Speaker 05

I think they also are very specific about, we're taking this wolf out, this wolf is gonna be.

• 51:00Andrew Santino?

Yeah, Mark is gonna be nice tonight. Yeah, Kevin is off his fucking rocker.

• 51:03Speaker 05

Yeah, there's a couple of ones who are like, don't get even close to that.

• 51:05Andrew Santino?

People that want like wild, like I watched that documentary about the, these, these people that love exotic animals, the women's that own the ape one, you know, like the.

• 51:13Speaker 05

  Oh, God, chimp crazy?

• 51:15Andrew Santino?

I, look, you know, we, we all have weird hobbies and interests, so I guess I understand when someone falls in love with something that someone else is like. Like if I say like, I love golf and someone's like, that's the fucking dumbest sport on earth. But when you're like, I want to own this animal. I'm like, what's the drive? It's very strange.

• 51:31Speaker 05

It's interesting. It's like the way that people, like, I love my dog. I have a dog, great dog.

• 51:38Andrew Santino?

  Same.

• 51:39Speaker 05

Um, but my dog is not like, there's levels of dog ownership, right? We've all seen like the dog ownership that's disturbing, right?

• 51:48Andrew Santino?

  Yes, correct.

• 51:49Speaker 05

I've seen dogs being pushed around in strollers. I've seen dogs that get way too much attention like if, and I'm like, if you get put out, like you could put your dog on a Christmas card, that's fine. But you can't make your dog the centerpiece of your Christmas card.

• 52:00Andrew Santino?

  That seems crazy.

• 52:01Speaker 05

Right? It's like, and, and there is that same thing. I think that people want like a doll. It's like, it's like, it's like a, it's like, well, they can't like this, this thing can't talk back to me. So they will never let me down. They give me love. It's unconditional. Eh, there's issues with it. And like, look, I, I, I love my dog. I love being around my dog. I love having animals, but. Owning something and trying to like manipulate it that way.

• 52:27Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, it's a little crazy.

• 52:28Speaker 05

I remember, man, um, back in the day in New York, there was a show called Eating It and it was at Luna Lounge and like everybody came through Luna Lounge, like Louis and Todd Barry and Janine Garofalo. Like it was like the hotspot for New York comedy in this era when New York comedy was kind of exploding. And every year they would do like a show called like A Night of a Hundred Comics. And it was everyone doing like very quick bits.

• 52:52Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 52:52Speaker 05

So it, you know, and it was a great night. Um, but everyone was trying to like, cause it was like a two minute bit, a two minute slot. Just trying to do something insane, right? Cause it was almost more like the spectacle is more than anything. One guy brought a fucking monkey up there.

• 53:05Andrew Santino?

  What?

• 53:06Speaker 05

And rented a monkey and that fucking monkey ripped off his ear.

• 53:10Andrew Santino?

  No!

• 53:10Speaker 05

  Ripped off his earlobe.

• 53:11Andrew Santino?

  Oh my god.

• 53:12Speaker 05

And it's like, no man, this is not, yes. And I'm not mad at that monkey. I'm like, yes, that monkey should.

• 53:17Andrew Santino?

Monkey's in the right. Yeah, the monkey's in the right.

• 53:19Speaker 05

Don't fuck with these animals. It's like, I don't get it. I don't get why people wanna fuck with animals. I don't get why, it's like, they are wild.

• 53:26Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, they're wild.

• 53:26Speaker 05

  They're wild.

• 53:27Andrew Santino?

Wait, did it rip it off? Not during the show?

• 53:29Speaker 05

Yes, cause it grabbed on and did something.

• 53:31Andrew Santino?

  Holy shit.

• 53:32Speaker 05

And that chimp crazy thing too, it's like the.

• 53:34Andrew Santino?

And now that chimp is actually on tour. Tickets are right here, uh.

• 53:38Speaker 05

He's sold out for a lot of spots, but look around, they're adding shows.

• 53:42Andrew Santino?

Tickets dude. He's really, he's killing it right now.

• 53:48Andrew Santino?

• 57:17Speaker 05

But that's the thing, it's like, I remember every animal trainer I worked with was odd.

• 57:27Andrew Santino?

  On sets.

• 57:27Speaker 05

On sets, like they like, you know.

• 57:29Andrew Santino?

They're so strange dude. I know that's mean, I just, it, it makes me so uncomfortable. But I also, I don't like, I get, you know, I feel the same when it's like if you're working with very young people on set.

• 57:41Speaker 05

  Oh, absolutely.

• 57:42Andrew Santino?

And they've got their teachers and their handlers and their, it's like they've got a crew of people and you're like, this is so uncomfortable. This kid is a kid, is a little human.

• 57:52Speaker 05

Let me tell you the thing that fucks me up in my brain. I said, on the league, we're shooting this episode.

• 57:58Speaker 05

Katie's having a baby. It's, I don't remember where that was in the show, but we, she's having a baby. We're all in the, we're all in the delivery room as she's having a baby. So, we need a, a baby. And there are newborns, like newborns that.

• 58:12Andrew Santino?

  Two days ago.

• 58:13Speaker 05

And what they do is they have to put jelly, like Smucker's jelly, all over the baby to make it look like viscera.

• 58:19Andrew Santino?

  Oh, right, right, right.

• 58:20Speaker 05

And I'm watching this parent, like, they're applying jelly.

• 58:25Andrew Santino?

  To their newborn.

• 58:27Speaker 05

Newborn baby and putting it under fucking hot lights and all this shit. I'm like, I was like, this upsets me. I, I, I'm like, and I get it, like, you know what? They're trying to make a living and all this stuff, but it's like, it's still like.

• 58:39Andrew Santino?

  That's your new baby.

• 58:40Speaker 05

  That's your new baby.

• 58:41Andrew Santino?

By the way, it's gotta be their third or fourth child. If it's first kid, they're like, no way.

• 58:45Speaker 05

I couldn't even deal with anything. I, I have that first kid, I was like, it was like, I was punched by, uh, Mike Tyson, old Mike Tyson, not, not, uh, Jake Paul Mike Tyson.

• 58:54Andrew Santino?

  Right, right, right, right.

• 58:55Speaker 05

But, uh, but like, I was like, but like, it was like, I, I didn't know what way it was up for like, at least four months. I was completely, you know, just taken, but these people are like, yep, we got a baby. You wanna put jelly on it?

• 59:05Andrew Santino?

Take it. Yeah, they are quick to be like, here, hold it. And you're like, no, I don't know what to do with it, man, I'm freaking. I did, I did a, I did a movie, uh, in Australia and I had to have a baby and the joke was that the baby was sucking on my tits.

• 59:18Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 59:19Andrew Santino?

Thinking that I'm, yeah. And we, this woman was so nice and sweet and generous with the kid, but you know, like I would, in between. You know, the baby where we had to use a real baby, I'd go, hey, do you want to just, um,

• 59:30Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 59:31Andrew Santino?

You know, like, give it back to the mom, and she's like, no, it's okay. And I was like, well, uh, take it. I don't want your baby.

• 59:38Speaker 05

I don't want to like do like this responsibility.

• 59:40Andrew Santino?

It's your kid. I don't, it's kind of strange. I feel odd because I'm already, you already feel weird with someone else's human. You're like, this is someone else's child.

• 59:48Speaker 05

Oh, man, there is a, uh, my friend is assistant director, which means that they have to do like all this very complicated work. It's like, you know, they're, they're making sure people come in and set on time. They're, they're like, they're basically like the captain.

• 1:00:01Andrew Santino?

Job foreman. Yeah, they're the foreman, right.

• 1:00:03Speaker 05

And so he said he was working with a very famous older actress. And so, you know, whatever she was holding, you know, the good cut, just drop it. Just drop like the minute cut was called. And then like, and they were like, wait, it was so crazy like, because they had to be so careful when they called cut. The coffee cups, anything, cut.

• 1:00:24Speaker 05

And I thought that was like the best move.

• 1:00:26Andrew Santino?

You're like, you could just put it down.

• 1:00:27Speaker 05

They said they had to have people underneath her like with like mats to catch shit because.

• 1:00:33Andrew Santino?

  Dude.

• 1:00:33Speaker 05

  The cut baby, just drop.

• 1:00:34Andrew Santino?

I need afterwards, I need to know who that was. Because that's, those are those incredible moments where you can't believe you see them happen. You know, like, uh,

• 1:00:41Speaker 05

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:00:41Andrew Santino?

I've had good ones and bad ones. I want to hear, I want to hear some more. If you've got some, you don't have to say names. I had one, there was a guy, actually, you know, um, in a tragic way, he, I loved this actor and he's passed away. And I, as a kid, like, loved this dude. He was so rad. And then I did, I did an indie movie with him. And I was so excited to connect on so many levels because we're acting in this thing, you know, I'm supposed to be best friends with his son in the movie.

• 1:01:06Speaker 05

  Okay, yeah.

• 1:01:07Andrew Santino?

And I grew up at their house because I'm like kind of a troubled teen who, you know what I mean? Like I didn't have a home. And that's a big part of the story. And I'm so excited on, you know, on this first, his first day, it's like my sixth or whatever. To like chat him up and we have a lot in common, you know, blah, blah, blah. And I get up there and I was like, hey, I just want to introduce myself, blah, blah, blah, blah, all the stuff. And he's ripping a cigarette and he's like, I don't, uh, I don't do this sort of thing, man. And I was like, oh, man. And it like, but it, but it immediately, it like snapped me back to reality. Cause I was like, okay, I, I respect that. That's okay. I was like, that's okay.

• 1:01:46Speaker 05

I play it very differently, which is like I, because I've had moments where I'm like, it's not gonna work out. So I just am silent. I come to set like a fucking meat puppet for like big people, you know? Um, but it is, it's interesting to see how, how man, you know, like, how people are, right? Cause you, you envision them as being like, they're gonna be gregarious, they're gonna be this.

• 1:02:12Andrew Santino?

  Cool, nice.

• 1:02:13Speaker 05

My, I'll tell you a story that is a secondhand story, but from my friend who is another assistant director. He was doing these Steven Seagal movies, later years Steven Seagal.

• 1:02:22Andrew Santino?

  Pre Russia move.

• 1:02:23Speaker 05

Yes, pre before, yeah. And so Seagal, like, they would say they would choreograph, and this is like bottom of the barrel, action, but still action, right? Cause he's selling these movies wherever he's selling.

• 1:02:35Andrew Santino?

He was doing like thirty a year at one point. It was insane.

• 1:02:38Speaker 05

I remember I was in France. I saw like three posters from Mel Gibson movies I'd never heard of. I was like, what is this?

• 1:02:42Andrew Santino?

  Fucking wild.

• 1:02:43Speaker 05

Yeah, it's like just churning them out.

• 1:02:44Andrew Santino?

By the way, you know, they go in, they shoot, he, they get, they get, they'll get him for like six days.

• 1:02:50Speaker 05

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:02:50Andrew Santino?

And then he'll go right to another one and then right to another one. It's fascinating.

• 1:02:54Speaker 05

They just knock them out. Like in six days is a long time. Sometimes I get them for two.

• 1:02:57Andrew Santino?

  Two days, yeah.

• 1:02:58Speaker 05

You know, it's like, it's it. And, um, and if nothing goes on, it's like you got one day. It's like, um, so, they work out this whole thing where like Seagal's at this table, two mafia guys kind of corner him. And he takes this guy's hand and he like, you know, wraps him up and punches, you know, he does this whole elaborate thing. And they worked it and they, all right, they get Steven in and, you know, and they're like, all right, so Steven, here's how it's gonna go. You're gonna go over here, you're gonna kick out the leg, you're gonna pull this guy, you're gonna slam him on the table. And Steven's like, yeah, yeah, yeah. What if, um, both guys come in real close? And I just go like this. Like punch one with one hand, like and they're like, that is a, yeah, I just do, I just do that.

• 1:03:41Speaker 05

I just punch, just punch one and they're like, yeah, but there's like, we want more. The guy actually is like, no, I'll just punch like that. Which is also like, uh, like.

• 1:03:51Andrew Santino?

Such a ridiculous move, such a hard thing to actually do.

• 1:03:55Speaker 05

And like no, like way to even get like.

• 1:03:57Andrew Santino?

  Uh uh.

• 1:03:58Speaker 05

And it's like, that's this kind of stuff. It's like, I.

• 1:04:00Andrew Santino?

But I bet you they shot that.

• 1:04:01Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 1:04:01Andrew Santino?

  Oh, that's in the movie.

• 1:04:03Speaker 05

There's no other, there's no other option. So then he does that and then two stunt guys go flying, you know?

• 1:04:08Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:04:10Speaker 05

Uh, you know, it's, um, I work with Nick Cage and I was psyched to work with Nick Cage. He's great. The thing that was tricky about Nick Cage was I did the same thing. Which was, I didn't, uh, with, with my thing, which was like, I didn't try to ingratiate myself with him. I show up, I'm gonna do my, hey, Nick, it's Paul, Paul and Nick, great. We're gonna do the scene, we do the scene. And, uh, and I really existed, like, we would sit closer than this. He'd be looking at his lines, I'd just be there silently doing whatever I need to do. Um, and then, um, on the last day, we're at these two slot machines. We're close to the last day.

• 1:04:53Speaker 05

And, uh, out of character, he goes, uh, you believe in ghosts?

• 1:05:01Speaker 05

Fuck, yeah, like jackpot. I put in like 10 days or whatever to get that. And I was like, I think so, yeah, man, yeah, he was like. And he looked around, he got nervous and he was like.

• 1:05:14Andrew Santino?

Who's nearby? He's about to tell a bad joke.

• 1:05:16Speaker 05

  He's like.

• 1:05:19Speaker 05

I'm gonna tell you a story one time, not now, I'm gonna tell you a story. And I was like, alright, and I never, and he never told.

• 1:05:27Andrew Santino?

  Never told a goddamn story.

• 1:05:28Speaker 05

But I know that like some shit happened with Nick Cage and ghosts. And I was like, and that was all I needed, that was.

• 1:05:35Andrew Santino?

Right, right, that's it, that's enough. Now, by the way, that's his Bill Murray, how you know Bill likes. People was like, no one's gonna believe Nick, it'd be funny to know later in life if Nick Cage just goes up to people and is like, you do believe in ghosts? And they're like, yeah, and he's like, I'll tell you a story a little bit later about that and just never ever tells the story about the ghosts.

• 1:05:49Speaker 05

Now, I will say that I I got obsessed with it. I was like, what could it be? Then I found out Nick Cage bought the most haunted house in America.

• 1:05:56Andrew Santino?

  What?

• 1:05:56Speaker 05

Which is this house in New Orleans. That was the um, the basis of an American horror story, really fucked up story. Basically, it's a surgeon who did like the most fucked up operations on.

• 1:06:07Andrew Santino?

I know about this. Oh, I heard about this. Yes.

• 1:06:09Speaker 05

  Right? So um.

• 1:06:10Andrew Santino?

Like did um, did like um, scientific experiments on people. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:06:15Speaker 05

And it really like, and the gut churning like.

• 1:06:18Andrew Santino?

  Disgusting.

• 1:06:18Speaker 05

Disgusting stuff. Nick Cage bought that house.

• 1:06:20Andrew Santino?

  Why, Nick?

• 1:06:22Speaker 05

And then moved out because he said it was too haunted.

• 1:06:25Andrew Santino?

Yeah, guess what, Nick? Chances are, this isn't gonna be a chill spot.

• 1:06:29Speaker 05

Yeah, I was like, I'm like, I'm ready for that. Like, if that's where he was going with that story, I'm like, wow, he saw some shit.

• 1:06:36Andrew Santino?

Yeah, because I, I think about that, by the way, we just moved into a new house and I think about that all the time of like, uh, cause my old house was in, was built in nineteen forty.

• 1:06:45Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:06:46Andrew Santino?

And that thing was one hundred percent haunted. And I mean it wholeheartedly. Like, we used to have, there was a woman who was a ghost and my wife and I would joke about it all the time. She named her something for a short amount of time before we moved out. But I would, because half of my house was original. And then the people that bought it in the sixties, they added on a separate chunk.

• 1:07:06Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:07:06Andrew Santino?

And the separate chunk was always extremely like, warm and like peaceful. And everyone that stayed over there was like, it's so nice over there on that side. But the old side, it's weird. It did have a little bit of a, I don't even know how to explain it. It had a more, um, like an old house in the country feeling. Where you're like out in the country, you know, like in a cabin somewhere. It had a very like. Um, quiet but very docile, like perhaps something is just like slowly underneath it, you know? And we would, I, all the time, I'd be walking through um, the living room and I would just kinda get one of those out of my eye, be like, oh fuck. And I would see the thing pass through.

• 1:07:47Andrew Santino?

My hand to God, but the, the house that we have now, the place we moved, it's funny because we joke about it, we're like, man, there's no creepy noises.

• 1:07:55Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:07:55Andrew Santino?

The, we bought it from the guy who built it, like he built it and raised his children in it.

• 1:08:00Speaker 05

  Okay, yeah.

• 1:08:00Andrew Santino?

So it was only one family and no one died. There's, you know what I mean?

• 1:08:03Speaker 05

  Right, right, yeah.

• 1:08:04Andrew Santino?

No death. There's no jazz to my new house.

• 1:08:06Speaker 05

No, and that, and you know, it's like, it's a crazy, it's a crazy thing when you feel like there is something up. My friend told me this story. He lives in uh, New Mexico.

• 1:08:16Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:16Speaker 05

  And.

• 1:08:17Andrew Santino?

The whole city of Albuquerque is haunted, by the way, just letting you know. It's all haunted.

• 1:08:21Speaker 05

It seems so crazy. He said, he said, so he had a friend over, uh, his family house, like, so, and this is like, look, I know all ghost stories are like, oh, maybe that's whatever. He had a friend over, this first time over their house, and they're all watching a movie, and she goes, she's like, I'm gonna go back to my room and get my glasses. And she never came back. And the next morning, they're like, uh, she comes down and, and they're like, what happened? She's like, I, I, something really fucked up happened. And he's like, what, what? He's like, I was walking back out to my room, and I saw this Native American man on a horse, like staring at me. And she's like, and I just ran, I slammed the door and I just hid in that room.

• 1:09:01Andrew Santino?

  Whoa.

• 1:09:02Speaker 05

And they're like, wait, what? And she's like, it was so crazy. And then the father's like, hold on.

• 1:09:09Speaker 05

Goes to garage and gets this painting that was like in the house of this like Native American man on a horse. And he goes, did it look like this?

• 1:09:16Andrew Santino?

  No.

• 1:09:16Speaker 05

And she was like, yes. And she never seen that boat? And then they, and then they put it up in the house and then they never saw it. I got like, it was like.

• 1:09:23Andrew Santino?

  Oh.

• 1:09:24Speaker 05

  They, they, they.

• 1:09:24Andrew Santino?

He just wanted to be represented in the home. That's it. The ghost was like, put the painting back, or I'm gonna fucking terrorize you guys.

• 1:09:30Speaker 05

  I was like, and I was like, I, I, like, I love, I mean, I, I'm all, I'm all for a good ghost story.

• 1:09:36Andrew Santino?

No, I believe in them, dude. I think it's fun.

• 1:09:38Speaker 05

I think it's cool. I think, I think that like, we all are energy. Shit's existing.

• 1:09:42Andrew Santino?

Yeah, it's happening. It's whether or not you want to see it. And by the way, even if someone's like, that's all bullshit. It's like, yeah, but bullshit's fun, too.

• 1:09:49Speaker 05

I love bullshit. And like, something I'm working on, like, I mean, I was, when we shot in New Orleans,

• 1:09:55Speaker 05

Tom Lennon, I could tell the story about Tom, I think, he's had a little son. Cute little kid, probably like eight years old at this point.

• 1:10:02Andrew Santino?

  Sure.

And it was really crazy because he would, he would run in, they were running in this apartment. He would see, he's like, hi dad. Run to the next room, hi mom. Run to the next room, hi Henry. Come back, hi dad, hi mom. Like, Henry, what's going on? He's like, oh yeah, Henry's in there. He can't, he's having trouble tying his shoes. No, no, no Henry, no anything. He's like, he's right there. And like, oh god. And then, and this is a kid who never saw, never did this before.

• 1:10:27Andrew Santino?

  Oh my god.

• 1:10:27Speaker 05

And he was seeing ghosts all around New Orleans. And like, one time they caught him out by a, like, a sewer grate. And he's, yeah, no, no, you can come out. Yeah, you can come out. And he's like, who are you talking to? He's like, oh, there's little kids in the sewer.

• 1:10:42Andrew Santino?

  Oh my god, dude!

• 1:10:44Speaker 05

  Oh man!

• 1:10:45Andrew Santino?

So they left their son in New Orleans, I guess, yeah.

• 1:10:47Speaker 05

They left him there and he's like, now he's got a lot of friends, a lot of ghosts. But he said, they said the minute, like, they left, it was like, he was, like, he just, it wasn't even like, he wasn't even, like, oh, I'm feeling weird. Or it's like, oh yeah, no, that, just, yeah, but there's a kid right there.

• 1:11:00Andrew Santino?

Whoa. There's no psychosis to it, that was just a moment in time and then it's gone.

• 1:11:03Speaker 05

And they always say that kids can see ghosts because, Kid Cudi says that.

• 1:11:07Andrew Santino?

  Yes, he does.

• 1:11:09Speaker 05

But like, because it's like, they're not, they're not like, um.

• 1:11:13Andrew Santino?

  Tainted, ruined?

• 1:11:14Speaker 05

Yeah, but yeah, it was like, oh yeah, like, see this thing and that's it. I'm not questioning it, I'm not talking myself out of it.

• 1:11:19Andrew Santino?

Yeah, they're taking things, um, from an innocent perspective. And we're all taking them from a jaded, a slighted.

• 1:11:26Speaker 05

Been there, seen it, like, what the fuck, alright?

• 1:11:28Andrew Santino?

Yeah, right, it is kind of interesting how as you grow, the way you look at things. I mean, the proof of that would be, as I've gotten older, the way I look at things, or I see and experience things, it does feel weird to look at them when you get older and go, ah, it's weird that I thought that used to be like this, you know?

• 1:11:44Speaker 05

Well, I think, I always, I, I think of it like, even, even like, yeah, there's a, there's an idea like. We, yeah, we just, we've seen, you get used to seeing stuff and you are prepared, like, I'm always waiting for the other shoe to drop, right? So I'm always like waiting for something. But then you start to carry yourself with an energy that's like, fuck it. Like, I remember like, when I was living in New York, I, I loved New York, it was great. But you just walk on the street, I lived on 50th and 8th, and I'd walk by a shitload of tourists all the time.

• 1:12:11Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:12Speaker 05

And there's an energy to tourists, which is great. Like, I'm happy that they're there, I don't have an issue with them, but I'm gonna weave in and out of you. I have to get to where I'm going, I'm not here to like.

• 1:12:19Andrew Santino?

You are in the middle of it though, at 50th and 8th, that's like in the guts, dude.

• 1:12:22Speaker 05

Oh, I mean, I was walking by theaters and everything, and I remember one day I was like just barreling through, and you know, you get in the zone, you're like, I'm weaving, I'm weaving, I'm weaving.

• 1:12:29Andrew Santino?

It's almost like a video game.

• 1:12:30Speaker 05

Yeah, and it's, I was like having so much fun, and I was, and I'm like, why is this so fucking crowded? Push, push, push, and then it like opens up, and as it opens up, I literally collided with Nicole Kidman coming out of a limo for his premiere at the Ziegfeld Theater. I was like, and we got like, almost like this close, I was like, ah! And then I was like, ah, god damn it, and I just like walked.

• 1:12:50Andrew Santino?

  Fucking Nicole Kidman!

• 1:12:51Speaker 05

Get out of my way, I'm trying to get in my house.

• 1:12:52Andrew Santino?

  You're always in my way!

• 1:12:54Speaker 05

But it was like, my energy of being like a New Yorker going through the street didn't even like, as I got like 15 feet away, I was like, holy shit.

• 1:13:02Andrew Santino?

It's the middle of a movie premiere, yeah, dude.

• 1:13:05Speaker 05

  I just like barreled through.

• 1:13:06Andrew Santino?

That's how jaded we, we become.

• 1:13:08Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:13:08Andrew Santino?

We have to stay, uh, keep the whimsy, keep the whimsy somehow.

• 1:13:12Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:13:13Andrew Santino?

Um, okay, do, do this, I appreciate you coming on the show, this has been incredible. I want you to plug, um, whatever you wanna plug, you made it weird, or what, whatever you wanna plug to let the fans, uh, continue to follow your greatness.

• 1:13:26Speaker 05

Uh, I have a book, a New York Times bestseller, by the way.

• 1:13:29Andrew Santino?

  Maybe!

• 1:13:29Speaker 05

I gotta say it, uh, it's called Joyful Recollections of Trauma, which is out wherever you get books, or there's an audiobook component of it, yeah, and that's that, and then, um, yeah, I got podcasts, How Did This Get Made and Unspooled, you can listen to those.

• 1:13:41Andrew Santino?

  Amazing.

• 1:13:42Speaker 05

  But yeah, it's all good.

• 1:13:42Andrew Santino?

Wait, say the name of the book again.

• 1:13:44Speaker 05

  Uh, Joyful Recollections of Trauma.

• 1:13:46Andrew Santino?

  Wow, that's great.

• 1:13:47Speaker 05

And, uh, it's a funny book, I know it has trauma in the title, but it's just like, just kinda funny, uh, stories from growing up, and then also there's some, you know, some serious stuff in there too, but.

• 1:13:56Andrew Santino?

Right, there's some real shit in the depth of it.

• 1:13:59Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:13:59Andrew Santino?

Can I, and, and I'm gonna ask you one personal question about it. Did you write it, or did you have a, did you have a writer?

• 1:14:04Speaker 05

This is so crazy, people ask me this all the time, I didn't know that was an option, that, but writer.

• 1:14:08Andrew Santino?

  That's a big thing, yeah.

• 1:14:08Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:14:09Andrew Santino?

A lot of people that get book deals, like if you, they're famous, people get famous, people get book deals, and then, you know, the famous person's like, I don't have time, they're like, no, we'll have someone else write it for you.

• 1:14:16Speaker 05

It and and so I I dug into that more and more as like I got because people would say to me all the time like on the on the publishing side they're like would you write it? Like yeah, like there was like to me, there was no reason to do it unless I was going to write it.

• 1:14:33Andrew Santino?

Sure, that's what I that's what I always thought. I just I learned about that later that I was like, oh, you don't have to write it.

• 1:14:38Speaker 05

And I think it's sort of like because it's like there's a stolen valor to it.

• 1:14:41Andrew Santino?

  Hundred percent.

• 1:14:42Speaker 05

You know, it's like I because I was talking to my people who recorded my book and they're like, oh, it's crazy. Like people will be reading their book. I'm like, that didn't happen. Oh, I'm not gonna say that. It's like because they didn't write it.

• 1:14:52Andrew Santino?

  It's yours.

• 1:14:52Speaker 05

Yeah, it's like somebody just like kind of just put it in in a way and it's like and I then I go back and I think about all these like I love biographies and you know like memoirs and stuff and it's like I'm like huh. How many of these are not written? There's one one. There's one I'll tell you after we're off, but there's one that just came out that I was like. Why like it's a memoir about something that's incredibly specific. I was like, you didn't write it?

• 1:15:19Andrew Santino?

That's so dark. That's so weird.

• 1:15:21Speaker 05

  This is.

• 1:15:22Andrew Santino?

  And now that lives.

• 1:15:23Speaker 05

And that lives on some level. It's like it's just, yeah, and then you go around and be like, oh, yeah, I wrote a book. It's like, I don't get it. I just don't because by the way, uh, money and books, it's not really there. It's not like, you know, it's not like.

• 1:15:35Andrew Santino?

Well, your helicopter is waiting outside. I will say that. No, I the only way I do think it works is if someone writes the book for you or about you like um. Warren Zevon, who I'm a big fan of, his wife, uh, or well, his widow, wrote his biography.

• 1:15:51Speaker 05

  That's yeah, that's great.

• 1:15:52Andrew Santino?

Kind of the that's the only version where I go, this is kind of cool.

• 1:15:55Speaker 05

I think Paul Reiser might have written the biography of um, oh my gosh, uh, a big like yacht rock guy, uh, Michael McDonald.

• 1:16:05Andrew Santino?

Michael McDonald. I was just like, there is the one.

• 1:16:07Speaker 05

  Yeah, and um.

• 1:16:08Andrew Santino?

You write my book for me.

• 1:16:10Speaker 05

But I think that that like that's interesting like and I also feel like there are people that are great talkers. Like you know, like that you may just do a shitload of interviews and then you transcribe it and you get the gist like that's fine. But like it's yeah, if you're if you're not on either side of that, like then.

• 1:16:30Andrew Santino?

It's gotta be personal to you. You in some way.

• 1:16:32Speaker 05

  On some level.

• 1:16:33Andrew Santino?

Yeah, some level, you have to have some kind of, you have to, yeah, it has to be you on some level. Otherwise, it's a little strange.

• 1:16:39Speaker 05

I remember like hearing like, like it's, I won't name the name because it probably would be darker. But there are people who like do Broadway just to get that credit, but then have no, they're like, oh, I have to do this every night? Like, yeah, yeah, that's the thing, man.

• 1:16:54Andrew Santino?

I thought this was a one time show.

• 1:16:56Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:16:56Andrew Santino?

No, dude, we do one show tonight, every night.

• 1:16:59Speaker 05

It's like, but people want that feather in their cap and they don't understand like what it takes to actually.

• 1:17:04Andrew Santino?

Oh dude, that's why, yeah, I got approached about this, this sports book thing.

• 1:17:08Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:17:09Andrew Santino?

And I was like, oh no, I, I don't want to do that. I don't have that. I just don't, I, I would love to, but I'm not gonna lie to myself and pretend like I can do it right now. I'm like, I can't, I don't want to commit to that.

• 1:17:18Speaker 05

The thing that I did that was, I think, smart with my book was, I wanted to write a book and I started writing a book and I wrote about a hundred pages before I even tried to sell the book.

• 1:17:28Andrew Santino?

  That's smart.

• 1:17:29Speaker 05

Cause then I was like, I'm not gonna have that much pressure now. Cause I'm like, I, A, I know what it's gonna be.

• 1:17:33Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 1:17:33Speaker 05

And, and it's like, it's halfway, or at least is in process.

• 1:17:38Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 1:17:38Speaker 05

I talked to so many people who like sell books, you know, and then like, yeah, yeah, we'll figure it out. It's like, I don't want to figure it out on a timeline.

• 1:17:45Andrew Santino?

I want it to be figured out.

• 1:17:46Speaker 05

Yeah, I've got to understand what I'm giving you.

• 1:17:49Andrew Santino?

And the truth really is, uh, your wife wrote your book anyway.

• 1:17:51Speaker 05

  Yes, a hundred percent.

• 1:17:52Andrew Santino?

Go buy it, uh, go check out, uh, the podcast, uh, podcasts, I should say. Plural, um, I appreciate you. We end the show the same way. You look in that camera and you're single and you say one word or one phrase to end the episode. It's kind of our nice little bow on the end. Some people do a one powerful word. Some people have a nice words of wisdom of a phrase.

• 1:18:11Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:18:13Andrew Santino?

And remember, as you think about it, this will live on forever. We're gonna submit this to the Smithsonian at some point.

• 1:18:18Speaker 05

  Got it, okay.

• 1:18:19Andrew Santino?

This will be embedded in his, the history of podcasting.

• 1:18:23Speaker 05

It was silent, but not deadly.

• 1:18:26Andrew Santino?

  And you're fired.

• 1:18:27Speaker 01

We pour whiskey, whiskey, whiskey, whiskey, whiskey.

• 1:18:31Speaker 02

Oh, that creature in the ginger beard.

• 1:18:34Speaker 03

  Sturdy and ginger.

• 1:18:35Speaker 04

Like theirs, the ginger gene is a curse.

• 1:18:37Speaker 06

Gingers are beautiful. You owe me five dollars for the whiskey and seventy-five dollars for the horse.

• 1:18:43Speaker 03

Gingers, oh hell no. This whiskey is excellent.

• 1:18:47Speaker 02

  Ginger, I like gingers.
