Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from. But when that context is scattered across tools, threads, and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying blind. That's the problem that Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all these pieces together, from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more. So nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping. Learn more at jira.com.

• 1:15Speaker 01

  That's J-I-R-A dot com.

• 1:17David Imel?

  Google Glass had this.

• 1:18Speaker 01

Yeah, but Google Glass didn't have the live orientation change as you move your head. Google Glass would show you the arrow of what your next direction is. This one specifically had a feature where you'd be looking at the map, and when you look down, it would show a little map preview and your orientation on the map. So you could tell which direction you're supposed to go, which is every time you start directions somewhere. That's the number one thing you have to figure out. Am I facing the right way already? Or no, already? That fat five-second dance? Solved? Yeah, love that.

• 1:51Speaker 01

Yo, what is up, people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts. I'm Marques.

• 1:57Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm Andrew.

• 1:57David Imel?

  And I'm David.

• 1:58Speaker 01

And this was Google I/O week. So of course, we got to talk about that. But spoiler alert. It was, I don't know, not boring, but there wasn't a ton there. So we're gonna also talk about some other stuff. I disagree. Some CarPlay Ultra stuff. You have some thoughts on I/O. I thought it was great. It was great. But also HBO streaming, interesting stuff there. Also a small boost of Windows nostalgia. So we got some other stuff to talk about as well. But first, shout out to the other channel, the MKBHD channel, for hitting 20 million subscribers over there. Appreciate y'all for getting us there. If you haven't already subscribed to Waveform, you should subscribe here too. We're going for 20 million, baby. To 20 million, which would be even better.

• 2:41Andrew Manganelli?

We're racing to 25 million, actually. Waveform v MKBHD.

• 2:45Speaker 01

Yeah. I hope they reach it at the exact same time. That would be a huge win for both of us.

• 2:49Andrew Manganelli?

Wait, so, how's it feel? I feel like this happened and we're just like, cool.

• 2:54Speaker 01

  Does your lower back hurt?

• 2:57Speaker 01

It's pretty sick. You know what's funny? I mean, every time you hit a milestone on a channel, it sort of sparks looking back at the other milestones. And I do remember, I still feel like the milestone where you add a digit feels insane. And then the ones in between are like nice study improvements, which remind you that you can add a digit. And every time you get to the next digit, you're like, well, there's no way we add another digit. Like when we had 100,000 subscribers, I was like, well, there's no way we hit a million subscribers. I remember when the first YouTube channel ever hit a million subscribers, it seemed impossible. And then we hit a million subscribers. And I was like, well-

• 3:34Andrew Manganelli?

  You hit a million.

• 3:35Speaker 01

Yeah, I had a million subscribers in the college apartment. And I was like, well, surely the peak for a tech channel has gotta be around a million subscribers, right? Like, this is kind of ridiculous. And then you hit 2 million and 3 million. But it feels crazy when you hit 10 million because you added a digit. It feels insane. Now, we're at 20 million now. I'm saying this out loud. It feels like impossible that a tech channel will ever hit 100 million subscribers. It doesn't seem realistic. But here we are, on our way, so.

• 4:06Speaker 01

Yeah, 20 million. 100 million next.

• 4:08Speaker 04

Marquez, according to Claude by Anthropic.

• 4:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:12Speaker 04

If all 20 million of your subscribers joined hand in hand, they would be able to stretch from Los Angeles to New York City.

• 4:21Speaker 01

Hmm. That's pretty interesting. I could picture that. Claude, I think we should do it. They could watch.

• 4:27Speaker 04

That is, according to Claude and Anthropic. I have not fact checked this.

• 4:31Andrew Manganelli?

Don't worry, we'll save it for court where you can then blame it on the own AI that you made.

• 4:38Speaker 01

I think the math checks out.

• 4:39Andrew Manganelli?

I, Adam and I found a couple, we decided to like, think of some things that were announced in the past and then reference them to a subscriber count that you were at.

• 4:48Speaker 01

  Okay. Harder than you'd think.

• 4:50Andrew Manganelli?

It was a little tough to do. We finally figured it out, but I just wanted to throw a couple of things out here. And do you want to like guess or do you want me to just say?

• 4:58Speaker 01

Oh, I can try to guess.

• 4:59Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay, launch of Snapchat.

• 5:01Speaker 01

The launch of Snapchat, I was in college. I think I was in college.

• 5:07Speaker 01

So that was around, what, 2012?

• 5:12Andrew Manganelli?

  Close.

• 5:13Speaker 01

Okay. And I remember that was when I got the, that was in my college dorm.

• 5:20Speaker 01

How many subscribers? I'm gonna go with like 1.5 million.

• 5:23Andrew Manganelli?

  16,000, September 2011.

• 5:28Andrew Manganelli?

  Pretty wild.

• 5:28Speaker 01

  16,000?

• 5:30Andrew Manganelli?

  Mm-hmm.

• 5:31Speaker 01

Whoa. And you had to go back in your channel analytics to like really think.

• 5:36Andrew Manganelli?

I found, yeah. First Pixel phone launch, how many subs?

• 5:40Speaker 01

First Pixel phone, okay. I remember reviewing the Nexus's and then the Pixel 1.

• 5:47Speaker 01

And I'm totally recalibrating. Maybe that's like 1.5 million.

• 5:50Andrew Manganelli?

  3.8.

• 5:51Speaker 01

  Okay, 3.8.

• 5:51Andrew Manganelli?

  October 2016.

• 5:53Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 5:53Andrew Manganelli?

Tesla Roadster announced. This is what sparked this whole thing. I was like, I wonder how many subs we had.

• 5:59Speaker 01

2017. So this is seven years ago, so it could literally be,

• 6:06Speaker 01

it could literally be like 12 million subscribers ago. Eight years ago.

• 6:10Andrew Manganelli?

Five million. It was like, right, 5 million was the first milestone we hit when I started and it happened in September and it was November when they announced, or no, no, sorry. November when it hit 5 million, September when the Roadster was announced.

• 6:24Speaker 01

So you've gained 15 million people have subscribed since the Roadster was announced?

• 6:28Andrew Manganelli?

  Yep.

• 6:29Speaker 01

  Jesus.

• 6:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:32David Imel?

  That's insane.

• 6:33Andrew Manganelli?

I also, looking through that graph, found something pretty interesting. 2013 was a crazy year. Do you know why?

• 6:39Speaker 01

  Why was 2013?

• 6:41Andrew Manganelli?

  The New Jersey Amherds.

• 6:42Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 6:43Andrew Manganelli?

  Just kidding. But.

• 6:44Speaker 01

  That's true.

• 6:45David Imel?

  Wait, can you explain that?

• 6:47Andrew Manganelli?

It was the, it's actually how I met Marquez, but it was arguably the worst pro ultimate team that has ever existed.

• 6:53Speaker 01

  No, not anymore. Not anymore.

• 6:54Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay. Well, it was close.

• 6:55Speaker 01

It's, it was about, it doesn't exist anymore, which tells you how good it was, but it's not the worst.

• 7:00Andrew Manganelli?

It was the only year it existed. Uh, yeah. It was the pro team Marquez and I played for. We were pretty bad, but.

• 7:05Speaker 01

  Two and 14.

• 7:06Andrew Manganelli?

Two and 14. Um, with, before the season started, we got sued for copyrighting our logo.

• 7:12Speaker 01

  What?

• 7:13Andrew Manganelli?

And getting, uh, nevermind. It was a long story. It was, there was a lot of things that went wrong. But I was looking, in November 2012, you hit 100K and in February 2014, you hit 1 million. So basically 2013 was like.

• 7:28David Imel?

  Wow.

• 7:28Speaker 05

  Your 10x founder year.

• 7:29Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, that, those are cra- that's like 14 months, a little more than a year, but I feel like 100K to a million is a huge milestone. Doing it in a year and doing it in a year in 2013 is like kinda crazy.

• 7:41Speaker 01

I've told the story before that in 2014, my junior year is when I had a professor ask me why I hadn't dropped out of college yet. So sometime between the beginning of college and the end of college, I went from being a cool side thing to being like very sustainable. And that was when they were like, hey.

• 7:59Speaker 05

Hey, why are you trying to get an education?

• 8:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 8:02David Imel?

  When you can make money.

• 8:04Speaker 01

What's this like diploma chasing thing you're doing? Yeah. That was a good year.

• 8:08David Imel?

What did 20 million subscribers teach you about B2B sales?

• 8:12Speaker 01

I actually wrote this huge LinkedIn essay about that. You should check it out. But I wrote it with. AI. Yeah.

• 8:19David Imel?

I'm gonna press the congrats button.

• 8:22Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 8:22David Imel?

  You're welcome.

• 8:23Speaker 01

I pressed the thank you button.

• 8:25Andrew Manganelli?

I don't think you understand how many LinkedIn requests you're gonna get after saying that out loud.

• 8:31Speaker 05

Cool. All right. Let's get to I/O. Sorry to derail that a little. I thought it was fun.

• 8:35David Imel?

  Input, output.

• 8:36Speaker 01

Yes. Okay, so as expected, there was a lot of AI talk, a lot of Gemini talk. Matter of fact, at the end of the keynote, Sundar put up a live counter of how many times they'd said AI and Gemini, both of which were over 90.

• 8:49Speaker 05

Yeah. It was wrong, by the way.

• 8:51Speaker 01

  It was?

• 8:52Speaker 05

Because when he put it up, it updated in real time, but it wasn't over. There was like another four minutes where they said each one again, like three or four more times.

• 9:00Speaker 01

So probably over 100 for both.

• 9:02David Imel?

  Probably.

• 9:03Speaker 01

Yeah. But we expected that. We saw the whole Android thing before, and now we got a whole bunch of Gemini and AI and Vio and all of the tools that they put in these subscription plans and all these new features launched and some of which we've gotten to demo because they actually launched right away, some of which are coming later this year, some of which are coming next year, et cetera. But there were some highlights, some interesting stuff that we want to talk through.

• 9:25David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 9:26Speaker 01

The one, I just want to shout out my favorite one because I made a short about it, was the try it on feature.

• 9:31David Imel?

  I love it.

• 9:31Speaker 01

As soon as they said it's available today, I was like, I gotta try it. I gotta see this. So I found it in labs. I enabled it in my account and it is an AI feature that lets you try on clothes from Google Shopping. Now, it's supposed to someday be anything in Google Shopping, I guess any clothes.

• 9:50Speaker 01

But for now, it's like kind of siloed with these like 50 or 60 garments that you can try. And so you upload a photo of yourself, hopefully with form-fitting clothing and a simple background, and then you just hit the outfit and it just builds an AI-generated image with you wearing the outfit. Some of them a little weird. Some of them definitely adjusted some of my proportions. Some of them looked like they kind of like generated new footwear, erased my watch, did some other interesting things to put outfits on me. I thought that was interesting stylistically. I also kind of worry about this feature because you can kind of just upload any picture. Like I use a picture of myself, but it doesn't say you can't upload a picture of someone else and put another random outfit on them. It's weird.

• 10:35Speaker 01

It's not public yet. It's in labs, so I guess it's kind of public.

• 10:39David Imel?

  Kind of public, yeah.

• 10:40Speaker 01

Yeah, that was the highlight for me of like, oh, that's five or six startups that just got destroyed just now with one slide on Google's presentation.

• 10:48Speaker 05

You know, we don't need AI to see how we look in dresses, right?

• 10:52Speaker 01

  I

• 10:53Speaker 05

You could just put on a dress.

• 10:54Speaker 01

  I deserve

• 10:55David Imel?

Feature. It was like, I thought it was cool.

• 10:57Andrew Manganelli?

I think there's so many times like you order something and it doesn't fit right. And you can save so much shipping if it like, if that does actually help like.

• 11:07David Imel?

The only piece of clothing I've ever bought on the internet is five gray shirts. And I didn't really need to know how that looked on my body because I just bought the medium and I was like, it's gonna be under whatever sweater I'm wearing that day anyway. Cause I only really wear sweaters. So, or jacket. Uh, for me, this is amazing because it gets rid of a lot of that anxiety of like, well, is this even gonna like, look okay on me? Is this gonna fit me right?

• 11:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:35David Imel?

Um, this is a very practical use of AI that I think is gonna be useful for a lot of people. I'm wondering what the constraints of this are. Like, do the companies that sell the garments need to like upload a 3D model so that they can like?

• 11:46Speaker 05

I was just asking Mark has that this morning.

• 11:48Speaker 01

Yeah. A lot of the verbiage on Google's website seems to imply that AI is going to automatically look at the garment, figure out, it knows what a garment is, and then figure out the places on your body that the fabric will lay and just simulate it with AI.

• 12:02David Imel?

I wonder if it's gonna simulate the specific type of fabric.

• 12:05Speaker 01

Seems like it. I mean, you kind of do a pose too. And so I had my arm out and like the thick sleeves were like hanging off my arm. It seemed like it did a good job.

• 12:14Andrew Manganelli?

I think this is only beneficial if it can pull without having to upload a 3D image because that's, no one's ever gonna do all of that.

• 12:21David Imel?

Exactly. It would be like a platform that nobody wanted to use.

• 12:23Andrew Manganelli?

Exactly. I think it's beneficial because so much of us order stuff online. And if you could look at it semi on yourself and realize then. I don't like how this looks, then it saves the shipping to you, deciding you don't like it, shipping it back.

• 12:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 12:36Andrew Manganelli?

Which we could all cut that on.

• 12:38David Imel?

There's a great Climate Town video about this, actually. You should go watch.

• 12:41Andrew Manganelli?

It would save so much in that sense. And also, the reason I think it would want to eventually pull from that is because they also coupled it with that uh, price tracking AI.

• 12:53David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 12:54Andrew Manganelli?

Was it like a, not like an extension or?

• 12:56David Imel?

Well, it would give you a notification on when it released, when an item dropped below a certain price threshold. So if you went, I really like that shirt, but it's 50 bucks, I wouldn't really buy it unless it's under 45 bucks. So you set a notification for, let me know if this ever gets under 45. And if it does, it sends you a notification, you hit the button, and it fills out the whole process for you and buys it on the spot, which seems pretty cool.

• 13:19Andrew Manganelli?

It's like more integrated slick deals or something, which I think is awesome. And if it can just pull that from seeing what's on a website, seeing a price and being able to follow that, I think that's awesome.

• 13:29David Imel?

Has been trying to make Google Shopping happen for a really long time. Like, they have tried so many different things to actually get people to use this platform, and it's been around for forever.

• 13:38Speaker 04

  Wait, people don't use it?

• 13:40David Imel?

  Google Shopping?

• 13:41Speaker 04

I use it all the time.

• 13:42David Imel?

  You're crazy.

• 13:43Andrew Manganelli?

  I don't like it.

• 13:44Speaker 01

I use it to find something and then I take that item name and go find the best place to buy it. I almost never buy anything from Google Shopping.

• 13:52David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 13:53Speaker 04

When I'm looking for weird stuff and I just need to be like, camera, one inch sensor, black, cement, you know, like.

• 13:59David Imel?

  Would you do that?

• 14:00Speaker 04

I do it all the time. When I.

• 14:02David Imel?

I would do the research to find exactly what I wanted first.

• 14:04Andrew Manganelli?

Well, can I give an easier example?

• 14:07Speaker 04

  Yes, sure.

• 14:07Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, if like, there's a pair of shoes that you really like that is sold across like DSW sporting goods stores, REI, everything.

• 14:15David Imel?

  Right.

• 14:15Andrew Manganelli?

You can also do all your sizes in there. So when it's like, maybe a pair of Solomons are out on the Solomon website, or REI, the places you're used to shopping at, then you can do it in that and it'll only show you things in those sizes and you can find the website.

• 14:28David Imel?

Yeah, and then you click on the website link and it's out of stock.

• 14:30Speaker 04

  When I.

• 14:31Andrew Manganelli?

  Possibly, very possible, but.

• 14:32Speaker 04

When I know what features I want in a product and I don't know which products have those features, Google Shopping comes in super clutch.

• 14:39David Imel?

For me, like YouTube and Reddit. It is my search engine for that.

• 14:43Speaker 01

I do my, yeah, I think my order of operations for I need a product in a category, but I don't know which one is I do product research first, watch videos, read reviews, et cetera. And then, once I know which product I want, then I go to Google to find like which version of it I can buy. And then I take the name of that product and then I go to the retailer I trust and try to find it there. And Google sometimes will show me all the retailers that have it and then I'll pick from there. But I don't, I don't even know if I trust that list. Sometimes I see the list and I'm like, I can buy these cleats on, you know, GOAT, on these two other websites. And then I'll go, well, what about Amazon?

• 15:18Andrew Manganelli?

  You buy cleats on GOAT?

• 15:20Speaker 01

Yeah, well, cause I, there's like, there's like a three year old pair of cleats that I really liked and I couldn't find them anymore. So I was like, what if I found a pair that someone just still has? And then I tried GOAT and I tried like one or two other sites and that was my way.

• 15:33Andrew Manganelli?

  So wild.

• 15:33David Imel?

  Interesting.

• 15:34Andrew Manganelli?

  I get mine at Marshalls.

• 15:35Speaker 01

  Well, yeah.

• 15:37Andrew Manganelli?

That's why you have two knee surgeries.

• 15:40David Imel?

Yeah, yeah. I only wear super wide dad shoes because I have a bad back.

• 15:47Andrew Manganelli?

I want to say, we've talked about shopping so far. I O should have opened with this. It was the most relatable thing. Instead, they tried to open it by relating to that Gemini completed Pokemon blue. And then made some weird pun about APIs with artificial Pokemon.

• 16:04David Imel?

Yeah, artificial Pokemon intelligence. That was strange and they didn't.

• 16:08Andrew Manganelli?

  It was not great.

• 16:08David Imel?

They didn't show any like screenshots.

• 16:10Andrew Manganelli?

It was just a graph. It was like, this is how we beat.

• 16:13Speaker 01

I thought that one might have been a joke.

• 16:16Andrew Manganelli?

It was a joke. Well, no, no, no. I think it beat it, but then the.

• 16:20Speaker 01

  But they didn't show anything.

• 16:21Andrew Manganelli?

  API part was just a.

• 16:22David Imel?

Look, if Twitch can be Pokemon, I would hope that Gemini could be.

• 16:25Andrew Manganelli?

Exactly. Do we want to be compared to Twitch viewers?

• 16:28Speaker 01

Yeah, I guess the, the main point of a lot of this I O keynote was to showcase Gemini, how much more powerful, different models of it have gotten. So they show lots of scores and lots of benchmarks and how powerful and how fast a lot of these models are. So they opened with that. Great. I get it. But then, yeah, they did get into some of the more meaty demo stuff.

• 16:46David Imel?

I will say that this year it felt like there were more obvious use cases of Gemini and all of these models and less just like, look at these numbers about tokens. Last year it was just a lot of nebulous numbers that didn't mean anything to anybody.

• 17:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:03David Imel?

Uh, but this year it was a lot of actual demos, actual integration.

• 17:07Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 17:07David Imel?

And that's why I found it to be a better I O this year.

• 17:10Andrew Manganelli?

I still felt like a lot of it was like, here's the thing AI can do if you're a complete moron. And here's like a set of numbers that you need a PhD to understand. It was like, there wasn't a whole lot of things that I was super, super excited for. Um, but do you want to go through?

• 17:25David Imel?

Yeah. So, okay. And I want to make sort of an overarching point about I O to begin this. Dub dub, Apple has this whole ecosystem of devices, right? And the whole point of Dub Dub is that they update the O S of every single device that they make.

• 17:40Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 17:41David Imel?

And you get to know all the new features of that O S. Google doesn't really have as much of an ecosystem, but Gemini is now sort of like, is sort of their ecosystem.

• 17:52Andrew Manganelli?

  It's the thing that's on everyone's devices.

• 17:55David Imel?

And there are a bunch of different things that it's doing because things like Image N and V O and Astra, like they're all sort of like subcategories of Gemini in a way. And so Gemini sort of feels like this, like universal operating system that Google has across its devices and platforms. So now every I O, we get, you know, we get the updates to all of these sub Gemini products, which I, which I found quite interesting. Uh, we got a lot of interesting stuff, starting with Real Time Translation. So I think Ellis, uh, may need to eat his words. He should try it first.

• 18:31Andrew Manganelli?

  We should try it.

• 18:32David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 18:32Andrew Manganelli?

  It's available today.

• 18:33David Imel?

  We should try.

• 18:34Andrew Manganelli?

  I know.

• 18:34David Imel?

Spanish. That was even still like, you know, after again, 14 years of Microsoft being like, this year we're introducing live translation for Google to come out and be like, it's here. No way. I was like.

• 18:48Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, Google's been talking about it for a while too. It was supposed to be in the Pixel Buds one.

• 18:53David Imel?

I remember, I know, but it again, like, like, like when, literally when I was in high school, they were like, this is coming to Skype, you know? So like, yeah. Mostly, but, uh, yeah. Congratulations, Google, on making me eat my words. Also to all 50 million people that tagged me on Twitter that, uh, that it's here.

• 19:14Andrew Manganelli?

They started doing it and I just slowly turned to Ellis and stared at him until and I just was watching him like groaning at the screen as it was happening.

• 19:22David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 19:23Speaker 01

For those who haven't seen it, it's essentially inside of Google Meet, if people don't speak the same language, they can have auto auto AI dubbing turned on for each other.

• 19:35David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 19:35Speaker 01

So you speak your own native language, the other person sees you and then starts to hear a live translated AI voice that sounds like you.

• 19:44David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 19:45Speaker 01

But is in your language that you understand.

• 19:47David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 19:47Speaker 01

So as if you're like watching a TV program that's dubbed.

• 19:50Speaker 06

It's nice to finally talk to you. Es bueno hablarte finalmente. No puedo esperar alquilar tu casa.

• 19:59Speaker 07

You're gonna have a lot of fun and I think you're gonna love visiting the city. The house is in a very nice neighborhood and overlooks the mountains.

• 20:07Speaker 01

But it's live and it's a video call.

• 20:08Andrew Manganelli?

It's like those documentaries where like it lets them start their sentence so you can hear what their voice sounds like and then

• 20:14Speaker 01

  goes over it.

• 20:14Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, like one second later, you can still sort of hear in the background, but the dub's over top of it.

• 20:18David Imel?

  Yeah, right, right.

• 20:19Speaker 01

Don't they sell it? Where is the library? It's that.

• 20:23David Imel?

Yeah, yeah, so that that was fun. Um, we also, okay, so we're just gonna go through this stuff. AI mode is something that kind of launched in beta for a lot of people a few weeks ago. I don't know if you guys have used this at all.

• 20:37Speaker 01

  I have it, yeah.

• 20:37David Imel?

I have used it. It's in Google search. So effectively, the idea of it is that you search things, obviously. But a lot of people are starting to search things not in SEO. Like, we're from this era where we search in SEO.

• 20:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:50David Imel?

Right? We know the keywords to put in Google to find the thing you need.

• 20:54Speaker 01

  Yeah, now it's knowledge searches.

• 20:56David Imel?

  Right.

• 20:56Speaker 01

And like asking it questions for answers.

• 20:59David Imel?

  Right.

• 20:59Speaker 01

  That's the new thing.

• 21:00David Imel?

So now people are getting more used to, because people go to chat GPT now and they type in natural language. So they're getting more used to this idea of like. Knowledge search, like you said. So now Google has this thing called AI mode, which is when you search something in Google, you can then switch into this AI mode where you can, it's basically a Gemini wrapper, where you can just have a conversation about the search. So you can speak more naturally to the thing. That's been out in beta for a little bit of time, but they just opened it up to everybody across the world. So I've used it a couple of times. It's kind of nice to be able to get to Gemini quicker, obviously.

• 21:34Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. Do you know with that mode in regular Google searches, it's still giving me AI interviews and stuff? Overviews, sorry, like.

• 21:42David Imel?

In regular mode, it does give you AI overview.

• 21:44Andrew Manganelli?

Just split them. You have the mode now. I just want the mode. Let me have my, let me still search in SEO.

• 21:51David Imel?

Google has a thousand teams and they just all deploy.

• 21:54Speaker 04

Do we know which version of Gemini the preview, the AI previews are using?

• 21:59David Imel?

I think they said 2.5 flash, the AI previews?

• 22:03Speaker 04

  AI previews in Google search.

• 22:05David Imel?

  The previews, yeah.

• 22:05Speaker 04

Excuse me, overviews. Because they're always wrong. They're always factually inaccurate.

• 22:10David Imel?

  They're often inaccurate, for sure.

• 22:12Speaker 04

  I, I'm willing.

• 22:14Speaker 05

I wouldn't say always. I've definitely gotten some accurate stuff.

• 22:16David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 22:16Speaker 04

  Have you double checked it?

• 22:17Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 22:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 22:18Speaker 05

  And it's definitely wrong sometimes.

• 22:20Andrew Manganelli?

I can say I watched it get like five things wrong this morning when I was trying to figure out Mark has a subscriber count in certain dates because it just referenced, it at least showed me the references to where it was getting them all wrong and it was just integrating that incorrectly, but.

• 22:34Speaker 04

I have been having, my issue with it is I've been using Android for the first time since middle school for the past few weeks.

• 22:40David Imel?

  Whoa.

• 22:40Speaker 04

  And, uh, so.

• 22:41Speaker 05

  Be more specific.

• 22:43Speaker 04

I've been using stock Android and, uh, and so I, there's a lot of things I don't know how to do. And I, so I Google it and I always get the AI overview and it's never a single time been right. Like to the point where it's like hallucinating things in settings that are not actually in the Android settings. So I've given up.

• 23:01David Imel?

Maybe they've been in settings in previous years.

• 23:04Andrew Manganelli?

  That's exactly what it is.

• 23:05Speaker 04

Yep. Or, or I'm on Android 14, so maybe it's in 16 and it's not in 14.

• 23:09David Imel?

  That's what I mean.

• 23:10Andrew Manganelli?

Or I think it's probably something that was in 12.

• 23:12David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 23:12Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 23:13David Imel?

Or if it was on an Oppo phone only, you know, but it's like grabbing from some.

• 23:17Andrew Manganelli?

  Take it from somewhere.

• 23:18Speaker 04

You know, there's a whole rainbow of ways to be wrong.

• 23:21David Imel?

Yeah, that is, that is true. Um, okay. We also got Imagen 4 and VO3. They called it Imagine four, so.

• 23:30Andrew Manganelli?

That's what I always thought it was.

• 23:32Speaker 01

I'd never said it out loud, but whenever I see it, I just go, oh, that's clever. It's called Imagine.

• 23:36David Imel?

  I think it's a devil on Tundra.

• 23:37Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah. It's their image generator.

• 23:40David Imel?

  Image generator and imagine.

• 23:42Andrew Manganelli?

I'm calling it Imagen, just like Imager.

• 23:44Speaker 01

  Image generator.

• 23:45David Imel?

  He called it Imager.

• 23:46Andrew Manganelli?

  Imager, no, Imger.

• 23:48David Imel?

  Imger.

• 23:48Andrew Manganelli?

  Imger.

• 23:49David Imel?

  Imager is what I.

• 23:50Andrew Manganelli?

  Imager.

• 23:51David Imel?

  Imager.

• 23:51Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, Imager.

• 23:52David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 23:53Andrew Manganelli?

Wow, I haven't seen that website in so long.

• 23:55David Imel?

  It's bad now.

• 23:56Andrew Manganelli?

  Reddit.

• 23:56David Imel?

  It's way worse.

• 23:57Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, yeah.

• 23:58David Imel?

Reddit has need posting now, that's why. Okay, so this is an image generator. Oh, my god. Sorry.

• 24:04Speaker 01

  Sorry, the rabbit hole.

• 24:05David Imel?

We're so old. Um, this is an image generator and a video generator, and they updated them, and they have previously been not quite as good as like ChatGPT's image generator, so theoretically, they're much better. Uh, but the big update is that VO3 now allows you to generate video with sound.

• 24:26Speaker 01

  Horrifying.

• 24:27David Imel?

  Which is horrifying.

• 24:28Speaker 01

I told you this was coming. I said this. I told you this. It's not just like Will Smith eating spaghetti now, it's you hear.

• 24:33Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, I was just gonna. I can he- you can hear the chewing now.

• 24:37Speaker 01

  It's serious.

• 24:38David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 24:38Speaker 01

  It's serious.

• 24:39David Imel?

I think we need to do it at some point.

• 24:41Speaker 01

It's weird. Yeah, I would definitely try to demo this. It's weird because, again, if you've been keeping track of this this video generation evolution over the past couple of years, it's been always very clear to me that it doesn't know what it's generating. It's just, it's just creating the file from diffusion, and then it just looks a certain way, and that's the way it is. So the fact that it's able to do dialogue already is like, it feels like it just leapfrogged a whole thing. Like, I didn't, I would expect like ambient sounds to be fine. Oh, it's in a forest, so you hear like birds chirping. Okay, that makes sense. Oh, it's a bird flying, so you hear the wings flapping.

• 25:20David Imel?

Yeah, but like people talking and the sound moving with their mouths.

• 25:23Speaker 01

That part is, that part is a lot.

• 25:25David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 25:26Speaker 01

That part is really impressive to me.

• 25:27Andrew Manganelli?

I can't wait to see a lot of it because like, we all know, look at hands to find the like, the telltale sign of AI, like, what's going to be the like, voice cue?

• 25:36Speaker 01

It's going to be ever shrinking, too. So there's gonna be, you're gonna be able to spot it, obviously, and then like it future, future advancements of it will get better and better and will be harder and harder to spot.

• 25:47Andrew Manganelli?

It's just getting to the point where my favorite part about new AI generation stuff is finding the thing that royally screws up the first time they like. So like now that we have audio and dialogue, I can't, I'm excited to see what, what the masses are gonna mess with.

• 26:00David Imel?

It's gonna like, it's gonna like dub in the wrong language, but the mouth is.

• 26:04Andrew Manganelli?

It's like three words are in a different language.

• 26:06David Imel?

Yeah. Um, yeah, I think that Imagen and VO are clearly more targeted at Google being like, oh, we know that businesses and enterprise want to use this for marketing because a lot of marketing that's like in the subway or like that uses like stock video or stock photography. Google is just like, we can replace the whole industry.

• 26:29Andrew Manganelli?

It's just gonna put ads in the middle of YouTube videos that are AI generated for whatever product you're selling.

• 26:34Speaker 01

Yeah. That was a whole thing. Yeah, we were watching this keynote. I forget who, but so one in the studio was like, there, what is the use of this? Like other than tricking people?

• 26:46Speaker 01

And there's not a lot that I could think of. Like I like the tool for brainstorming. Like if I'm trying to imagine a YouTube thumbnail or trying to imagine a video set, I can just kind of play with it and figure some stuff out. But yeah, it's getting more and more realistic and can do dialogue now. Like what does that benefit? It doesn't benefit me at all.

• 27:03Andrew Manganelli?

I could see like needing stock footage of something as like a B-roll clip. Like there's whole websites that are just stock footage.

• 27:10Speaker 01

Cause stock footage doesn't have audio most of the time.

• 27:12Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, you're saying the audio aspect of it?

• 27:14Speaker 01

Audio aspect and like getting better.

• 27:15David Imel?

  Well, it's weird.

• 27:16Andrew Manganelli?

No, this is for ads. It's like if you're a brand and instead of hiring people to make your new ad, you can just type it into Google, be like, I'm selling this product, give it a bunch of pictures, be like, give me people on the beach enjoying this thing and put it in between videos for ages 18 to 35 males. There's also already tons of Instagram ads that use your voice to talk about.

• 27:37David Imel?

  Yeah, true.

• 27:37Andrew Manganelli?

Things. So now they can use your voice and your face at the same time.

• 27:40David Imel?

  Oh, gosh.

• 27:41Speaker 01

  Also, yeah.

• 27:43Speaker 04

I don't know how this is gonna like play in with actors' union contracts. But I could see the video game industry being really, really interested in this. Because in modern AAA games, you are oftentimes recording like hundreds of thousands of lines of dialogue. Think about, you know, for like the like the random crowd lines that you would normally.

• 28:08David Imel?

It was interesting because every time they announced a new speaker on stage, they would walk on stage and there was like a video, an AI-generated video of that speaker with like a flaming basketball or something.

• 28:18Andrew Manganelli?

  Like a dress of butterflies.

• 28:20David Imel?

Yeah, but it wasn't just a modified video. It was a fully generated video. Because it was, there was a little bit of that AI look to their face. So you could tell that had been generated. But it was close enough that it was kind of like right over the edge, right? So the weird thing about this is gonna be like, like they're gonna be able to make ads that just have your face and voice now.

• 28:40Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, they're embracing that. But that is a downside.

• 28:43David Imel?

  It is a huge downside.

• 28:45Andrew Manganelli?

If I could attempt to pick a way to use this, that's not bad. Is similar how you said, like, you like to mock up thumbnails. Like, I've done this before where I've been like, Tim, this is this idea that I had for a thumbnail. I tried my best to manipulate it in Sora, but now you make it because, you know, you're talented and we pay you. I could see this maybe being like if you're a director or something being like, I want, this is like what I'm looking for in a shot to show to your director, photography to show to your actors, something like that. But that probably just means you're a director. You can't explain that you need AI. I don't know. But they also announced something called Flow, which is an AI filmmaking app, which lets you take those short clips, stitch them together, make longer videos.

• 29:28David Imel?

Yeah, it uses Vio, ImageGen, and Gemini together. And it is basically like a video editing platform that you can just AI filmmaking.

• 29:39Speaker 01

I'll jump down one more rabbit hole real quick. There is a new YouTube feature that we've been given special early access to. That is a, yes. That is, that helps me as a creator identify versions of me that have been AI generated that are uploaded to the internet. To YouTube specifically.

• 30:01David Imel?

  Interesting.

• 30:02Speaker 01

So you know how copyright ID would be like, I am the copyright holder of this music track. If anyone else uploads this music, it can automatically find it. And then I can use the tool to decide what I want to leave and what I want to take down. This tool, which is very forward thinking for YouTube, is a likeness detector.

• 30:18David Imel?

  That's cool.

• 30:18Speaker 01

So, so far I've been poking around in it and it's basically finding other re-uploaded copies of my videos. But I can imagine in a world where this becomes really prolific, someone makes a fake ad with me, you know, an AI version of me promoting something, I would be able to see it and I would be able to take it down because I own my likeness through this tool. I would suggest that all the platforms consider something like this because it is very early days. And I think creators in general like the idea of owning their likeness, even when those tools become crazy like this.

• 30:52David Imel?

  Yeah, that's very helpful.

• 30:53Speaker 01

Okay, back to the top of the rabbit hole.

• 30:55David Imel?

Okay, we also got an update to Project Astra.

• 30:59Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 30:59David Imel?

So last year we saw Project Astra and that was basically the multimodal Gemini that was basically live, but could also use your camera. And it could, you could talk to it and I think it was effectively just supposed to be their most multimodal version of Gemini.

• 31:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:16David Imel?

And this time they added a lot of other stuff to it. So they added the, an agentic feature where you could ask it to look something up for you and it would scroll the internet for you and like pick out pages. You could show it live video feeds and talk to it in real time. And effectively I would consider this kind of AGI in a way, like this may be a hot take, but everyone always talks about AGI and reaching this point where like, oh, we've got this artificial general intelligence that can do anything better than a human. And like functionally. I think the only important part of AGI functionally is like, when can it do everything for you?

• 31:54Speaker 01

When can it do what I ask of it?

• 31:55David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 31:56Speaker 01

Yeah. I, I tend to agree. I think a lot of people picture it as being like a humanoid robot or like navigating the world around it. But my standard has always been if I had a personal assistant and I could just talk to it like a regular person and it could figure out what I wanted and actually do it.

• 32:11David Imel?

  Do it.

• 32:12Speaker 01

  Mission accomplished.

• 32:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 32:13Speaker 01

And so the agentic features, like there was a version where I think he, there was a guy fixing a bicycle and he needed a certain part. And the agent went and called a local bike shop to confirm that they still have the part in stock.

• 32:27David Imel?

  That was crazy.

• 32:28Speaker 01

That's, that's the type of thing a person with a human assistant would do.

• 32:31David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 32:32Speaker 01

And it just pulled it off theoretically.

• 32:34David Imel?

Super funny too, is in 2018, we saw Google Duplex.

• 32:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 32:38David Imel?

And there were so many articles written like, what are the ethics of this? And that was where you would have basically a Google Assistant at the time would call a restaurant and make a reservation for you. And everyone's like, oh, but if they don't know it's a robot, like, is it ethical? And now we're just like, yep, we're just doing everything. Like, nobody cares anymore.

• 32:55Speaker 01

Arc of like, first it was, it would call them and be like, hi, I'm a Google Assistant calling on behalf of.

• 33:01David Imel?

Well, they didn't do that first.

• 33:02Speaker 01

Well, pizza shops would just hang up.

• 33:04David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 33:05Speaker 01

No one's gonna answer that. Started going, ah, okay, people just hang up. So we might have to, and then they stopped doing that. And then they started just calling and pretending to be a human.

• 33:14David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 33:14Speaker 01

  And not saying it.

• 33:16David Imel?

Well, I think what happened is that they didn't say it. And then there was all those articles written about it and people freaked out. And then they added it and then it just didn't work because people just hang up on it.

• 33:25Speaker 01

  Ah.

• 33:26David Imel?

And so now, and now Google's like, well, I guess people are used to robots now. So they just like started having to do all this stuff. So yeah, we saw a demo of some, some guy basically fixing his bike and doing all these things with it. It was quite cool. I have to say, I think it was very good.

• 33:41Speaker 01

Demo they showed on Gemini Live was like, just someone walking around and saying a bunch of wrong things. And then it's sassily telling them that they're wrong.

• 33:49David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 33:51Andrew Manganelli?

I thought it was a funny demo just because of how

• 33:53David Imel?

  Look, Google's right.

• 33:53Andrew Manganelli?

mad it seemed like to be at it. It wasn't mad, but it's just like, no, that's not a convertible. Again, that's a dump truck.

• 34:00David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 34:00Andrew Manganelli?

Like, hey, that's just your shadow, moron. But um,

• 34:03David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 34:04Andrew Manganelli?

That, I felt like they were just showing the same thing, but rather than just telling you everything, because they've shown that a million times, they're like, well, let's just tell you you're wrong about it.

• 34:12David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 34:12Speaker 01

It was, it was an interesting demo.

• 34:14Andrew Manganelli?

  It was a weird demo.

• 34:15Speaker 01

The thing that people are concerned about is, is it going to be wrong all the time? Or is it going to be right? Like, is, is the AI going to tell me the truth? Or is it going to hallucinate? And the fact that it felt like maybe you could say something wrong and try to trick it, and it would actually like, give you the right answer, felt like they were instilling confidence

• 34:32David Imel?

  Right.

• 34:33Speaker 01

in people using the AI to tell the truth.

• 34:35David Imel?

  Can I eat this?

• 34:36Andrew Manganelli?

Can I tell a quick anecdotal story? We saw in the studio the other day about live. We were talking about the gorilla person experiment, and it somehow got on the topic of, can gorillas get drunk? I think.

• 34:50Speaker 04

  Can you explain that?

• 34:51Andrew Manganelli?

In case people have not been. There's a whole debate on if one gorilla can take on 100 humans. And so that sparked multiple debates at work. And we somehow got into, could a gorilla, what was it? Could one gorilla take on 104 locos? Or something like that. So we were trying to see if gorillas could get drunk. Anyways, Alex asked Gemini,

• 35:11Speaker 01

  Of course they can.

• 35:12Andrew Manganelli?

  Like, do gorillas metabolize alcohol?

• 35:15Speaker 04

  It's not a course.

• 35:16Andrew Manganelli?

  What?

• 35:16Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah, I'll explain later.

• 35:18Andrew Manganelli?

I've seen squirrels. Very quickly. What, what was it like? If a gorilla were to drink a four loco, would it get drunk? And its response was, well, since gorillas are smaller than the average human, yes, it would be able to. And all of us just kind of like, paused and were like, smaller than a human? And Alex said-

• 35:36David Imel?

Than a baby. I mean, than a big person, like a large.

• 35:41Andrew Manganelli?

It's, I think it's still bigger than the biggest person you can think of.

• 35:46Andrew Manganelli?

And, and he had to like, correct it and was like, oh, you're right. Gorillas aren't, are bigger than humans. And that's how like, confident, it would have continued with that entire conversation, with the basis of gorillas are smaller than humans, if you didn't correct it.

• 35:58David Imel?

Interesting. Yeah. Obviously, everything that Google shows off is going to be-

• 36:03Andrew Manganelli?

  Perfect.

• 36:03David Imel?

Well. Hasn't been in prior years, but I think they're trying very hard because they had a lot of mess ups the last few years. So yeah. Uh, they also introduced Project Mariner, which was effectively the rabbit teach mode that we never got. Where you would like teat, you would show it how to navigate a certain site and then it could repeat it.

• 36:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:25David Imel?

Um, that has obvious use cases eventually.

• 36:28Speaker 01

They really feel the need to name everything, huh?

• 36:30David Imel?

  They do, which.

• 36:31Andrew Manganelli?

So they can change it in a year?

• 36:33David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 36:34Speaker 01

It's just Project Astra, Project Mariner, Gemini Lie, like.

• 36:38David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 36:39Speaker 01

Veo Image. Okay. Yeah. Everything's got a name. Cool.

• 36:42Speaker 04

  Project Cold Harbor.

• 36:44David Imel?

  Cold Harbor. Spoilers.

• 36:46Speaker 04

  Uh, that's not a spoiler.

• 36:48Andrew Manganelli?

I have no idea what you guys are talking about.

• 36:49Speaker 04

There's a popular TV show made by, uh, Apple TV plus Pro Max, whatever, called Severance. Where an evil tech company gives all of their na- their like project secret code names. And it's very similar to the way Google does.

• 37:04Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 37:05David Imel?

Yes. Yeah. Okay. Uh, also Gemini Agent Mode, which can do multiple tasks for you at once with one unified AI. And I found this to be very cool. It was sort of this generalized Gemini AI where you would ask it like, you could ask it questions, just like you would normally ask Gemini questions. But then you could say like, oh, can you do this and this and this? And it would like start doing stuff in the sidebar and also answer questions to you on the right. And, uh, it kind of just felt like this all in one portal. So right now it kind of feels like they have a lot of sandboxes that they're just kind of messing around with to see what sticks.

• 37:41Speaker 01

  They all have names.

• 37:42David Imel?

  And they all have.

• 37:43Speaker 01

And all of them are coming either soon or later this year.

• 37:46David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 37:46Andrew Manganelli?

Or to subscribers. That was like, was that the most used phrase this entire show was available for subscribers?

• 37:53David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 37:54Speaker 01

This is the thing. Yeah. So they, I guess, are making, uh, sort of bundles of these sandboxes that you can pay for access to groups of them at once. So one of them's called Google AI Pro and one of them's called Google AI Ultra, which is just all of them plus like 3D termites storage is $250 a month.

• 38:11David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 38:12Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 38:12David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 38:13Speaker 01

Uh, but yeah, that is. That's kind of how I see it. There's just a bunch of simultaneously developing technologies that sometimes work with each other, sometimes are just their own thing.

• 38:21David Imel?

Yeah. Uh, we also have Gemini personal context and Sundar actually used this as an example on stage where his friend, apparently friend, emailed him and it was asking him some like hiking advice for like a trip that he was doing and he's like, I know that you did this trip. So do you have recommendations? And Sundar was like, I don't have time for that. So he basically, he, he had been on these trips before and had made like a spreadsheet about the trip or something in his Google Drive. So Gmail was, was able to pull information from his documents that he had in Google Drive about the trip and just basically replied to him for him.

• 39:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:03David Imel?

But at the same time, the question becomes if Sundar is going to reply with AI, why didn't the original guy just ask AI the questions?

• 39:12Speaker 01

Well, well, that was, that is exactly why I didn't like this demo.

• 39:15David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 39:15Speaker 01

Is because they've done a good job lately. You know how we've kind of made fun of a lot of these demos of being like, how can I be a worse person?

• 39:21David Imel?

  Right.

• 39:22Speaker 01

Can you write a letter to my cousin who just graduated and say how proud I am of him? Like,

• 39:28David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 39:28Speaker 01

Do it yourself if you really care, right?

• 39:30David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 39:30Speaker 01

And most of the demos they've tried to do have avoided that, like being a worse person thing, but this was specifically a person asking Sundar for his personal recommendation.

• 39:38David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 39:39Speaker 01

So he's asking you, what do you recommend that I do? And then Sundar's AI goes, oh, well, you did this trip. You had these calendar events. You had this spreadsheet. So I'll write what you would have recommended him.

• 39:51David Imel?

  Right.

• 39:52Speaker 01

And I guess that's easier for him, but it's also just, just on that.

• 39:57David Imel?

It's on the cusp because it is technically based on what Sundar did specifically.

• 40:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:04David Imel?

Which could be interpreted as his, his recommendations.

• 40:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:08Andrew Manganelli?

All, I want to jump in here because this is like, this has happened to me, literally hiking things at a national park. Like it makes so much sense. He should have just phrased this whole thing differently because he said, I got this email and I need personal recommendations for Zion. And he said, normally I just wouldn't respond, which is just like off the bat, stick move. Like that just makes all of this seem so, but the thing is, is like, when you're doing a lot of research on, you know, we'll use a park, for example, you've probably made a spreadsheet or you've made a Google Doc and you've shared it with people and you've like, sent emails to everyone going on the trip on what you want to do. So if I could say like, oh yeah, I did do a bunch of things. Can you pull all the research I've written down already into an email?

• 40:52David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 40:53Andrew Manganelli?

And then I go in and like, add my touch to it. Like, oh yeah, I really did like this one, which is great because it already pulled it from that Google Doc from five years ago that I probably named something stupid and is hard to find.

• 41:04David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 41:04Andrew Manganelli?

  That's super helpful.

• 41:06David Imel?

It is. Yeah. I, as you say that, it's like, half the people in my life are like, hey, what phone should I get, Marquez? And I kind of just imagine it going like, looking through my hundreds of docs and reviews and being like, boy, do I have an answer for you.

• 41:18Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 41:19David Imel?

And that is easier because I-

• 41:20Andrew Manganelli?

Have you ever heard of Oppo?

• 41:21David Imel?

Yeah, like I don't actually want to answer that email, but maybe it would just do it.

• 41:25Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. If you have good intentions, you can use that really well because it's harder for me to go find all the things, but if it can pull it all in and then I can change it. But if you're just like, I never would have replied to this guy in the first place, but now I'm gonna let AI do it. You're just-

• 41:39David Imel?

And I will say that like, this is sort of an enhanced version of Google's existing smart replies in Gmail. The smart replies in Gmail are useless garbage. Pretty generic. They're so generic. It's just like, sounds good. Thanks. That's it.

• 41:53Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 41:53David Imel?

Or, no, I don't want to do that. Like, those are the answers that it gives you. And so now it can be based on your personal writing style. It can pull from your past emails in your inbox where have you ever applied to things and said specific things before?

• 42:06Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 42:06David Imel?

  And information that you've received.

• 42:08Andrew Manganelli?

  That I could see super-

• 42:09David Imel?

Super helpful because it's hard because the search function in Gmail sucks.

• 42:13Andrew Manganelli?

Yes, agreed. And like, when we did our South by Southwest show, it started with Adam, Ellis and I talking to Vox. So like, that was multiple email chains, long 50 plus emails on each. But when I had to send the information to you guys, like, I could have said, can you grab the stuff we finalized in these email chains about South by Southwest and put it into one email with the important location times that we need? Oh my God, that would have saved me so much-

• 42:40Speaker 01

It sounds amazing if it works.

• 42:42Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, yeah, no, totally agree.

• 42:43Speaker 01

If it pulls from an old email of like, does this time work for you? No, but it sees the time and like pulls that in.

• 42:49David Imel?

Or it doesn't understand time zones or something.

• 42:51Speaker 01

Yeah, I would love if that worked, though.

• 42:53David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 42:54Speaker 01

  If it worked, very useful.

• 42:55David Imel?

Money, yeah. And it could also be based on files in your Google Drive. And something I've been thinking about a lot is like, people have been saying that Google is the best positioned AI company right now because they have so much data about you personally. Because, you know, Apple is all about security and privacy and we won't use your data for anything. And Google's like, we will use data for everything, but you're also using all of our products.

• 43:16Speaker 01

  And it'll be convenient.

• 43:17David Imel?

And that's what all of these are. Like, it pulls from your Google Drive. It pulls from your previous emails. It pulls from like everything you've done with it. That does position Google to be like, you should use more of our products because then our AI that is your personal assistant for your whole life will work better if you give it more context and information.

• 43:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 43:35David Imel?

Which is why they added Gemini to Chrome, which is the next thing we're going to talk about.

• 43:41Speaker 01

Yeah, real quick, just to compare to like where Meta is at. Meta, remember they're building that tool of like, oh, you have an Instagram profile and your friends want to DM you, but you don't want, or your fans want to DM you, but you don't want to reply to all of them. So we can make like an AI that's like you and replies to them. It's a cool idea maybe, but how much does that AI know about me? Other than how I DM my friends?

• 44:05David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 44:05Speaker 01

I don't know if I trust that to have enough information. Meanwhile, Google's like, I read all your emails, all your calendar events, all your docs. I know everything about you, so I.

• 44:13David Imel?

Well, and also I think the difference too is that Google lets you validate it before you hit that send button. You know what I mean? It will write you the email with all of the information, but you have the option to go and double check that information. Whereas the the meta copy of you is just responding to you.

• 44:29Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's a big difference.

• 44:30David Imel?

  Yeah, it's a huge difference.

• 44:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 44:32David Imel?

So, um, yes, but they added Gemini to Chrome.

• 44:37David Imel?

And the browser, the browser company's Dia Browser was kind of supposed to be Chrome with a Gemini, well, a Chapi GPT sidebar. Yeah, I don't really know what they're gonna do now. I feel like this was inevitable, though, so. Have they, they probably have thought through that at this point?

• 44:56Speaker 01

I mean, this, yeah, we saw this coming a mile away.

• 44:59David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 44:59Speaker 01

Which is Gemini is gonna be in everything. Okay, Gemini is in Chrome. Very useful again, if I'm on a website and I want to ask for a summary of something, if I'm. If I, I mean, all the classic things that you see on like smartphone browsers these days. Like, it, maybe their differentiator is you can flip between different models. Use GPT one day, Gemini another day. I don't know if that's enough.

• 45:21David Imel?

Yeah, everything they've been showing has been super, super early and they said they have tons of ideas they're gonna implement. So we'll see, but I don't know. But the interesting thing about Gemini and Chrome is that it has all of the data of everything you've been doing on the internet.

• 45:35Speaker 01

  Yeah, Jesus.

• 45:37David Imel?

That's right. That's so much information. It knows every website you've been to. It knows everything you've searched.

• 45:41Speaker 01

  Since I was like fourteen.

• 45:43David Imel?

And if it knows everything about, if it has an infinite context window. People have to go into chat GPT and say, I am this kind of person. I do this. I, I like this sport. And that's like, it, you know, it uses that information over time, but you have to manually input everything, whereas. Using Gemini and Chrome is just kind of like a one-click import about who you are as a human being. Which is pretty, you know, like, I feel like that's kind of their killer.

• 46:09Speaker 01

This is the ultimate, uh, privacy convenience trade-off. Yeah, it's just absolute, like, pull that slider all the way to one end of like, you don't have any privacy. It knows everything you've done, your history, your communications and everything. But wow, is that gonna be convenient. It's gonna be able to write emails for you that sound like you. It's gonna be able to tell your friends where you're going on a certain day, so you can meet up. It's gonna be, it's gonna be great.

• 46:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Write the podcast.

• 46:34Speaker 01

The sliders have been pulled all the way to the edge.

• 46:37Andrew Manganelli?

Look at all the Verge articles I've looked at for the last week. Write the podcast.

• 46:44Andrew Manganelli?

All the YouTube videos and articles I've read in the last week.

• 46:48David Imel?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, so that's, that's a huge thing. And the interesting factor is going to be whether or not Chrome gets separated from Google in a couple of months. That's a big question mark. But if they can do this, and a lot of people have been using Chrome for years, it's like a one click import to Gemini, and then suddenly they knows everything about you. And I think that's really crazy.

• 47:08Speaker 01

  It is a lot.

• 47:09David Imel?

So that was most of the main stuff, but we also have the glasses, which we will get to.

• 47:14Speaker 01

Yeah, why don't we take a quick break? We'll do the glasses and the, the video call thing.

• 47:19Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, beam.

• 47:20David Imel?

After the break. But not the Casey Neistat one.

• 47:22Speaker 01

Yeah. Uh, but hey, before that break, you know, we're gonna do a little bit of trivia.

• 47:32Speaker 04

Welcome back to another beautiful edition of waveform trivia, but not just any waveform trivia, because we had a tech event this week. And you know what we do when there's a tech event?

• 47:43David Imel?

Were you paying attention? That's right.

• 47:46Speaker 01

  It's definitely not.

• 47:48David Imel?

Not enough. I will tell you that.

• 47:51Speaker 01

  It was two hours long.

• 47:52Speaker 04

Guys, while showing off Google's data analysis AI, put it all in one place, organize it, make it pretty capabilities. Rajan was talking about baseball, and not just baseball, but a new shape or type of bat. Oh, that is present in Major League Baseball.

• 48:15Speaker 01

  Oh, thank goodness.

• 48:16David Imel?

Because I'm in a brain freeze.

• 48:17Andrew Manganelli?

This is a 20 point question, right?

• 48:18Speaker 04

What, hey, what is the bat?

• 48:21David Imel?

  Can I describe it?

• 48:23Speaker 04

You know what? I'm feeling a little crazy.

• 48:25Andrew Manganelli?

How about this? How about this?

• 48:26David Imel?

  To me, Ellis.

• 48:27Andrew Manganelli?

Never mind. I can't tell you to ask a question because I obviously know the answer to that part also.

• 48:31David Imel?

Can I describe the bat but not say the name?

• 48:34Speaker 04

  Uh.

• 48:36Andrew Manganelli?

Is it even the official name? Or are they just calling it like that style?

• 48:39Speaker 04

That seems to be the official name. Uh, well, I don't know if it's like a, like a trademark name or anything, but it seems like colloquially we're all. Also, before we go to break, a quick shout out that is totally due because one of the goats of the platform, I mean, obviously Marquez, 20 million. Cannot say how cool it is, but one of the goats of the platform just made their goodbye video this week.

• 49:02Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 49:03Speaker 04

Outdoor Boys. It was one of the sweetest goodbye videos that I think any YouTuber has like made. I cannot wait to see what you do next, even though I won't see it. But Marquez, I feel like as somebody who doesn't watch Outdoor Boys, you would appreciate this, that in the last 18 months, he gained 12 million subscribers.

• 49:25Speaker 01

  In 18 months?

• 49:26Speaker 04

  In 18 months.

• 49:27Speaker 01

  Blown out.

• 49:28Speaker 04

And that's why he left. He was like, this is too much.

• 49:30Speaker 01

  Wow. That's why he left?

• 49:32Speaker 04

Yeah, he was like, I can't go out in public anymore. My family is like, we can't have normal lives.

• 49:38Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 49:38Speaker 04

  Anyway.

• 49:39Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 49:40Speaker 04

We'll be right back after the break.

• 49:54Speaker 00

What will you canva today? What will you brainstorm, collaborate on, present today? What will you resize, post, edit, imagine? What will you research, test, switch, and finally have the courage to pitch? You got this. What will you visualize, design, brand, animate, create, generate? What will you translate, pour your heart into, or have a laugh doing? Whatever you want to make is possible. So what will you canva today?

• 51:54Speaker 01

All right, welcome back. There was yet more from Google I/O. I didn't realize I started by saying it was kind of boring, but there's kind of actually.

• 52:01Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, watching it was boring, reading back the good parts about it was like, okay, these things are interesting.

• 52:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 52:06Andrew Manganelli?

Which just proves that they did a terrible job presenting.

• 52:08Speaker 01

It was a bunch of highlights in between a bunch of boring. That's what it was.

• 52:11Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 52:12David Imel?

I also think that they repeated a lot.

• 52:14Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, yeah.

• 52:14David Imel?

In the first half, they announced a ton, and in the second half, they just announced it again.

• 52:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 52:18David Imel?

I was like, what are you doing?

• 52:20Speaker 01

  It was two hours.

• 52:21David Imel?

It could have been one. Anyway, continue.

• 52:23Speaker 01

Yeah, so, so Project Starline, we got to see, was that two Google I/Os ago?

• 52:27David Imel?

Yes, it was two years ago.

• 52:28Speaker 01

Okay, so it was there, this massive specially-built

• 52:34Speaker 01

kiosk, I don't know what to call this, but it was a video.

• 52:37Andrew Manganelli?

It's like a puppet, a puppet theater in the library.

• 52:39Speaker 01

It was kind of cool. It was basically just, you sit down in front of it, there's a whole bunch of cameras and sensors around you, and someone else sits down in front of one somewhere else. And when you look through the display, which is a lenticular display at the other side, it looks like the person on the other side is sitting in front of you in 3D. I did a video about this. I tried to capture it on camera to the best of my ability. It's difficult, but it is a very impressive technology.

• 53:03David Imel?

  It's pretty wild.

• 53:04Speaker 01

I'm not entirely sure how they scale this, or like bring this to businesses, or like who even needs these types of things. But we did get an updated version of this called Google Beam, which was. A smaller version in collaboration with HP that maybe even has better image quality and uses AI to like.

• 53:20Andrew Manganelli?

  Was it smaller?

• 53:21Speaker 01

It looked a little smaller. I mean, this is me judging based on the video. But yeah, that that was something else that they showed at I O, which was like, OK, if they're gonna ship these, they now seem to have a commercial partner that they can manufacture them with, and maybe it'll be in the real world someday.

• 53:35David Imel?

Yeah, they just said it's Starline, but with AI.

• 53:40Andrew Manganelli?

  And HP.

• 53:41David Imel?

I don't really know what the AI is doing.

• 53:43Speaker 01

Well, the theme of that's the theme of Google I O is we added AI to it. So I think they looked back and they were like, oh, Gemini.

• 53:51Speaker 04

But that justifies an entire name change from Starline to Beam.

• 53:55Speaker 01

I think low key, the HP partner is actually a bigger deal because they have someone to make the hardware instead of being like just a thing Google built and shows some reporters sometimes.

• 54:04David Imel?

Do you guys think Humane is making it?

• 54:05Andrew Manganelli?

I said that when we were watching. I was like, is that where this is going? Well, because they're all at HP now.

• 54:12Speaker 01

  Oh, HP. Oh.

• 54:17Andrew Manganelli?

I was wondering why no one laughed when I said that.

• 54:19David Imel?

Well, the AI element is obviously that they're doing the real time translation because it uses Google Meet.

• 54:24Andrew Manganelli?

I was wondering if some of it may have also been the like, it still needs to kind of cut you out. And when we did Starline, there was some like pretty jagged edges every once in a while. So I wonder if it just increased the efficiency of that.

• 54:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 54:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 54:37David Imel?

They're gonna be an info conference.

• 54:39Andrew Manganelli?

Can I? I don't even know what that is.

• 54:42David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 54:43Andrew Manganelli?

  Pride for the best.

• 54:44David Imel?

  Thanos meme.

• 54:46Andrew Manganelli?

I'm trying to think of, because I think this is cool, but the situation you have to be in to use this feels extremely niche.

• 54:56David Imel?

Because it's. No, come on. Think about a think about a WeWork. Think about if a WeWork deployed like five of these and you could just go in and do a video conference with someone at another WeWork.

• 55:05Andrew Manganelli?

But can you only do it with one other person?

• 55:08Speaker 01

  So far, we've only

• 55:09David Imel?

  Probably.

• 55:10Speaker 01

If you can fit in the window of capture, you'd have to be next to them.

• 55:14David Imel?

Well, it was doing face tracking before and they could probably only do face tracking on one person.

• 55:18Speaker 01

  Yeah, like the eye tracking.

• 55:19Andrew Manganelli?

This feels like at best one to one video conference.

• 55:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 55:23Andrew Manganelli?

And both people need the full setup in the space that it's in.

• 55:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 55:28David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 55:29Andrew Manganelli?

And I feel like most video calls between offices that are just an office are more than one person.

• 55:35Speaker 01

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 55:36Andrew Manganelli?

So I feel like this is extremely

• 55:37Speaker 01

It was a cool idea if I had to narrow it down specifically for seeing someone you care a lot about and you can't travel to go see them.

• 55:46David Imel?

  Right.

• 55:46Speaker 01

Probably family, probably someone who can't fly, but somehow has access to get to one of these locations.

• 55:52David Imel?

  I can't fly.

• 55:53Andrew Manganelli?

  Super enterprize-y.

• 55:55Speaker 01

We are right near airport. We can't fly either.

• 55:58David Imel?

  That's true.

• 55:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:00David Imel?

Okay, big, the biggest, the probably biggest news that most people care about. Android XR is a platform that Google had announced earlier this year. We obviously saw Project Muhan, which was their Samsung collaboration headset that is exactly like a Vision Pro, but more comfortable, slightly lower quality. I actually got to try it for the first time, so that's why I'm just saying all the things.

It's very comfortable, by the way, you know, it was not as high quality as Vision Pro, but it was close. But they took the Android XR platform and the whole idea of Android XR is supposed to be it's scalable. So you can go from devices with literally zero screens where it's just basically using Gemini Live for you.

• 56:39Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 56:39David Imel?

To a full Vision Pro-esque headset where you're, you've got everything like in front of you and all this kind of stuff. But the biggest thing is that they finally showed off the glasses, which was very cool. And they announced partnerships where they're going to be making glasses with Gentle Monster, which is like a high fashion brand.

• 57:00Speaker 01

I had to look these up.

• 57:01David Imel?

Yeah, well, yeah, that one. Yeah, they're a high fashion brand. And then also, what was the other brand?

• 57:07Andrew Manganelli?

  Warby Parker.

• 57:08David Imel?

And then also Warby Parker, which is like a more entry level glasses brand.

• 57:12Speaker 01

  More popular.

• 57:13David Imel?

Yeah. Uh, so I got to try them. Marques apparently also got to try them a long time ago.

• 57:18Speaker 01

When I can, I think I can say this, I wasn't allowed to show it. When I shot my

• 57:24Andrew Manganelli?

  Hold on.

• 57:25Speaker 05

Yeah, I don't know if we should.

• 57:25Speaker 01

  I think, cause that was

• 57:31David Imel?

Well, maybe we shouldn't talk about that, just in case, but I finally got to try these glasses. They have a monocular display, which is sort of a little mini screen in the corner of the right eye. And if you tilt your head a certain direction, you can kind of see it. And it was a similar kind of thing to the Meta glasses, but it was like shrunken down to one small area. And I thought it was actually quite cool.

• 57:58Speaker 01

When you say Meta glasses, you're talking about the Orion prototype?

• 58:00David Imel?

  The Orion prototype.

• 58:01Speaker 01

  Gotcha.

• 58:01David Imel?

Yeah, they wouldn't tell me if they were using like wave guides or whatever. But they have a projector, so almost definitely.

• 58:09David Imel?

But effectively, they are Gemini glasses. So you have a little pill in the bottom right corner that you can turn on at any time, either by touching the side of the glasses or by invoking it with your voice. And you can do everything you can do with Gemini Live. So you can look at a thing, you can say, "What kind of art is this?" Or they had me open a book up to a random page from some random country and be like, "Can you summarize this page for me?" And it would like read me a summary of the page, tell me what I was looking at.

• 58:35Speaker 01

  I can't read.

• 58:37David Imel?

Other cool features, it has a camera, so it can take photos. So you can take a photo, it has a really, really, really low quality preview. But then you can obviously interact with Gemini that way. But probably the coolest feature was the Maps integration. It was so cool. It had this little, what do you even call that? The little droplet of where you are on Google Maps? Pin? And it showed a bunch of streets around you and it sort of like faded out into nothingness. And it was fairly high resolution considering, but as you would turn your body, the pin would move too.

• 59:08Speaker 01

If that part works, instant, like that's a killer feature for me.

• 59:13David Imel?

This is what Google Glass had then.

• 59:16Speaker 01

Yeah, but Google Glass didn't have the live orientation change as you move your head. Google Glass would show you the arrow of like what your next direction is. This one specifically had a feature where you'd be looking at the map. And when you look down, it would show a little map preview and your orientation on the map. So you could tell which direction you're supposed to go, which is every time you start directions somewhere. That's the number one thing you have to figure out. "Am I facing the right way already or no already?" That five second dance. Solved?

• 59:42David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 59:43Speaker 01

  Love that.

• 59:43Andrew Manganelli?

Glass is the MapQuest directions we used to print out. And this is like Google Maps on your phone.

• 59:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:51David Imel?

Yeah, it was nice too, because when you would talk to it about the room or about your Google Maps location or whatever, it would have little texts that would appear that would kind of come up in real time. And it was very responsive. It was a little bit weird only having it in one eye at the beginning, because your eyes can have to adjust to that. But they eventually get used to it, and you're pretty used to it. They're very light. I think they were cool.

• 1:00:14Speaker 01

Yeah, there's a theoretical binocular display version of it. And that's the idea of Android XR, is it can be on one display or two, or the whole muhan thing, or no displays. I think it's useful. I think also the translation thing that they tried on stage, which it was kind of a janky livestream that they tried to do, but similar idea, which is I'm wearing the glasses, you speak to me in a language I don't understand, and I get a live translation on the glasses. So I'm kind of like, still looking at you through the glasses, but also reading what you're saying in front of me. It's kind of another real-life cheat code.

• 1:00:46David Imel?

  Right, right.

• 1:00:47Speaker 01

  It's pretty sweet.

• 1:00:48David Imel?

It does help. Yeah, I think this is sort of an endgame that we have all been talking about for a very long time. Whether or not we can get used to everyone that didn't use to wear glasses, something wearing glasses, I don't know. Because a lot of people showed up to this event with the meta glasses, and I was like, everyone looks weird. So, I don't know.

• 1:01:03Speaker 01

It's because they're all kind of the same exact style.

• 1:01:05David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:05Speaker 01

And you're like, I know what you're wearing.

• 1:01:06David Imel?

  Uh huh.

• 1:01:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:01:07David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:08Speaker 01

So. I think that, though, this live translation demo, as Ellis has mentioned in the past, is such a like, obvious, like, kumbaya, like, what if all of humanity could talk to each other type thing, where like, they feel like if they can solve that, then they'll have an obvious win. And this is the closest that I've personally seen to actually achieving that. It just seems, because what they did on stage was actually two different people who don't speak the same language at all. It was one person speaking Hindi, one person speaking some other language, I don't remember. But then they would speak, and both of them would translate to English, which is cool for the viewer. But the idea is, these people ordinarily would never speak to each other, but it was enabled through this cool technology, because they both had the glasses on.

• 1:01:53David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:53Speaker 01

Which, like, we've seen a version of that amazing tech solution moment a thousand times before. This just happened to be the most convincing one I've seen.

• 1:02:01David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:02Speaker 04

  Have you had that problem?

• 1:02:04Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:02:05Andrew Manganelli?

I don't think it's a common, like, everyday problem that they've solved. I think it's a cool, easy tech demo that it's easy to get behind.

• 1:02:14Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:02:14Andrew Manganelli?

Which is why they keep trying it.

• 1:02:15Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:02:15David Imel?

One of the most aha moments I ever had about technology was being in Japan for the first time in like 2015, 2016, and being able to translate things via Google Translate and have them read it and understand, talk back into it, and then have it speak out in English. And that was for me like, oh my god, this opens up so many doors. And then this is much quicker, right?

• 1:02:37Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:38Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:02:38Andrew Manganelli?

So it's been walking around with Google Lens this whole time.

• 1:02:40David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:40Andrew Manganelli?

Which is like, it's useful, but yeah, it just gets better.

• 1:02:43Speaker 04

Hey, you know, like, once we all can just universally understand each other, we can get to work building a really big tower. Because that worked so well.

• 1:02:55David Imel?

  Space elevator.

• 1:02:56Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:57David Imel?

So, yeah, um, we don't know anything about pricing. We don't know anything about what the final designs are going to look like. These are very much prototypes. They wanted you to make sure that you knew that. They had signs in the mirror that were like, this is a prototype. Please do not think this is the real thing.

• 1:03:12Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:12David Imel?

And I think they're still experimenting with monocular versus binocular.

• 1:03:16Andrew Manganelli?

Did, just to step it back a couple, did you ask about pricing of Muhan at all? Because when we asked, they were very good at dodging that question as hard as possible. They wouldn't even like try and say the word like premium or anything. They would just be like, we are not discussing.

• 1:03:31David Imel?

They told me that Samsung was like a bit touchy about them announcing anything for Samsung.

• 1:03:38Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 1:03:38David Imel?

So they didn't want to say anything on Samsung's behalf.

• 1:03:41Andrew Manganelli?

I still think they were figuring some things out. I'm just, interesting if we've got any closer because it's been five months at this point.

• 1:03:46David Imel?

  I don't think so.

• 1:03:47Andrew Manganelli?

I don't think we're any closer to seeing a price for it, no?

• 1:03:49David Imel?

  No.

• 1:03:49Speaker 04

  I think in general.

• 1:03:50Speaker 05

It was launching this year, though.

• 1:03:52David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:53Andrew Manganelli?

  I did think that, yeah.

• 1:03:54David Imel?

They did keep saying that, actually.

• 1:03:55Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:03:56Andrew Manganelli?

I think in general, you can kind of think of it as like a tier system.

• 1:04:00Speaker 01

Maybe even similar to what we've been talking about with the iPhone camera, one camera, two camera, three cameras. It's kind of just zero displays is the cheapest version. Full VR headset is the most expensive version and the glasses are in between.

• 1:04:11Andrew Manganelli?

Because you're only taking the screen into effect, but the form factor is so much different where the Muhan has so much more room for internals and stuff. When you have to make a glasses technology that small inside of that, then like that is also a huge price increase.

• 1:04:28Speaker 01

That's fair. I think they they end up throwing a lot more compute and battery and hardware at the VR headset because of all the room. Where they're kind of shrinking, obviously it takes a lot to develop. But as far as bill of materials, like the goal I still think is to be able to ship like a cheaper incremental version of the glasses up until the most expensive thing, which is a headset. I think at least that's the vibe I got. So, but yeah, we don't know because we don't know any of the prices of anything.

• 1:04:54David Imel?

I think they also look at it sort of like it's more focused on being a platform like Android is, right? Like the reason that they keep showing off other Android phones at these events is that they want you to know Android has so many different form factors. Android is a lot of things. And Android XR, they don't want to be the only ones that are going to build that. They want other people to build it.

• 1:05:13Andrew Manganelli?

  For sure.

• 1:05:13David Imel?

Yeah. So it's kind of like how Meta wanted to be the platform for the metaverse before, but then that didn't work because the metaverse. Nobody cares. So I think everyone's like, ah, yeah, XR is the thing. Yeah, but I'm surprised actually that we haven't seen Meta doing much since the Quest 3 came out. Like there's been no announcements about XR really.

• 1:05:36Speaker 01

Yeah, they definitely, I mean, they only showed us the project. What is it called? Orion glasses?

• 1:05:41David Imel?

  I guess that's true.

• 1:05:41Speaker 01

But we don't have anything shipping in that form factor.

• 1:05:44David Imel?

Yeah. So, yeah, I don't know. We'll see when those come out, but they did announce those partnerships. So I imagine there will be devices at some point.

• 1:05:52Speaker 01

  Speaking of partnerships.

• 1:05:54David Imel?

  Let's go.

• 1:05:55Speaker 01

Apple had this weird thing that they did at WWDC. Remember when they showed that CarPlay that took over the entire screen of this unknown mystery car and it was like

• 1:06:04David Imel?

  A long time ago.

• 1:06:05Speaker 01

  The new CarPlay.

• 1:06:07David Imel?

Which is like two years ago.

• 1:06:08Speaker 01

  Was it two WWDCs?

• 1:06:09David Imel?

It might have been three years ago.

• 1:06:11Speaker 01

  But the idea was

• 1:06:12Andrew Manganelli?

  Two sounds about right.

• 1:06:13Speaker 01

They announced it and then we didn't really see any cars actually have that.

• 1:06:17David Imel?

  It was 2020.

• 1:06:18Andrew Manganelli?

And then do you remember last week, we decided to take a random shot at Apple?

• 1:06:25Speaker 01

And then whoever was in charge of that program went,

• 1:06:29Speaker 01

"Oh, wait, I was supposed to launch it." And then they did. And so now officially, they have unveiled CarPlay Ultra is what it's called. Which is, I guess there's an Aston Martin that they started off with. Or maybe it's just all new Aston Martins are gonna have this compatibility with CarPlay Ultra, which is, yes, the normal CarPlay, which is running off your phone on the main screen in the middle of the car, but also your gauge cluster and your information about the car, your speedometer, tachometer, all of that will also be taken over by CarPlay. And so it is kind of themed and it looks like Aston Martin-y, but it's also running from the compute off your iPhone. Other partners will theoretically have their own themes. But now, yeah, this whole unified CarPlay Ultra experience takes over all of the screens in the car.

• 1:07:15Speaker 01

I see this video and I see like this Aston Martin website and I think it looks neat. I like it. I can't imagine why any car company would want to do this, but they seem to be partnered with Aston Martin on at least this.

• 1:07:32Andrew Manganelli?

Marcus, because 85% of people in the world or in the US will not buy a car unless it has CarPlay. Don't you remember that?

• 1:07:39Speaker 01

  So, yes.

• 1:07:41Andrew Manganelli?

This number we totally made up right now.

• 1:07:43David Imel?

And we definitely only went to Apple on campus and asked them this question.

• 1:07:48Speaker 01

Yeah, it's also like, okay, these Aston Martins, people aren't... Okay, maybe they are. Maybe they're like, "I only will buy this Aston Martin if it has CarPlay." Maybe that's a real person. I don't know. But it is, whenever I like test a car that has CarPlay, there are various levels of how intertwined it is with the rest of the car. Usually it's like in a window on the main screen. Sometimes it's a full window. Sometimes if I'm navigating, it will show the navigation on the HUDD, which is kind of cool, or in a little piece of the screen behind the steering wheel. So sometimes it's a little bit better. This one just guarantees it's like it fully takes over.

• 1:08:27Speaker 01

It's neat, looks cool, seems like a better version of CarPlay.

• 1:08:31Andrew Manganelli?

  I just called it.

• 1:08:32Speaker 01

Ultra. I just don't see many cars ending up having this.

• 1:08:35Andrew Manganelli?

  I think it looks awesome.

• 1:08:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:08:36Andrew Manganelli?

Might be because it's in an Aston Martin, which looks good already.

• 1:08:41Andrew Manganelli?

But I think it's really funny how you can like, I know not all CarPlay looks bad, but there's like the Lucid CarPlay that has that weird shaped screen. So it's just like this box with a bunch of edges that you can see.

• 1:08:52Speaker 01

The Mini Cooper review, the Mini Countryman review?

• 1:08:55Andrew Manganelli?

That, the Mini Countryman UI system looks like you're trying to pick a new Android watch face and you're in like the 10th page of terrible watch faces.

• 1:09:04Speaker 01

  Huge circle.

• 1:09:05Andrew Manganelli?

  Really bad.

• 1:09:05Speaker 01

  It's a, it's a square inside of the circle.

• 1:09:07Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, that's terrible.

• 1:09:08Speaker 01

  It's rough.

• 1:09:09Andrew Manganelli?

So it's cool that it can do this. It is, they said you can customize it and it, it should take over similar themes to whatever the car manufacturer you are. Which is cool.

• 1:09:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:09:18Andrew Manganelli?

I kind of feel like a lot of people, maybe I don't know Aston Martins, probably would want a physical cluster.

• 1:09:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:09:24Andrew Manganelli?

I know people like that a lot.

• 1:09:25Speaker 01

  I would say so.

• 1:09:26Andrew Manganelli?

This is not that by any means. But it looks really cool. Top Gear did a like 18 minute walkthrough video of it, which was good because Apple, of course, only shows like renders. And that's gonna look beautiful no matter what.

• 1:09:39David Imel?

There's simultaneously that sort of element where almost every single car manufacturer makes horrible software. And so it makes sense to just let another like

• 1:09:48Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:09:48David Imel?

Phone company make the software, but also why not just have regular CarPlay, you know?

• 1:09:55Speaker 01

Yeah. I mean, a lot of the things that this adds is like climate control, uh, speedometer, uh, how much, if it's an electric car, how much battery you have left, a lot of things like that.

• 1:10:06Andrew Manganelli?

That I think is like arguably one of the biggest things. If you can integrate range into your, you know, CarPlay or if you're in Android Auto or whatever, Google.

• 1:10:15Speaker 01

I think that's the best feature because I've, we've used cars that have, uh, Android or Google built in. And so if I navigate somewhere with Google Maps, which is built into the car, it knows how much battery I'll have when I get there because it's built into the car.

• 1:10:29David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:29Speaker 01

Versus if I was just using CarPlay, it'll just tell me to go somewhere and not knowing I don't have enough battery to get there. So the integration makes sense. There's also this layer of every car has different physical buttons in it.

• 1:10:41David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:42Speaker 01

And I guess they'll have to sort of tailor this per car because in my car, I don't need the HVAC controls because I have dials, like physical buttons for that. So. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know what it'll look like in every car, but this is what it looks like.

• 1:10:56David Imel?

I don't like the idea of buying a car that makes me stick with one operating system either, especially in Aston Martin.

• 1:11:02Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, I mean, it's still got its own.

• 1:11:03Speaker 01

Yeah, like if you want to switch to Android, uh.

• 1:11:06Andrew Manganelli?

Does it not have Android Auto? I don't know if that, I don't know if this means it doesn't have.

• 1:11:11David Imel?

I would be willing to bet that they don't want this car to have Android Auto.

• 1:11:16Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:17David Imel?

I don't see that anywhere on the website, but I wouldn't be shocked if they didn't have Android Auto.

• 1:11:21Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, I mean, that event, because this also says in the article that manufacturers like Hyundai, Kia and Genesis all committed to applying this in the future. And I feel like that's starting to get to the point where that's a nuisance to those car manufacturers.

• 1:11:34David Imel?

  For sure.

• 1:11:35Andrew Manganelli?

To not. Take out a whole, yeah. Most cars at this point have Auto and CarPlay. I just assumed this was like the really good version of CarPlay.

• 1:11:44David Imel?

Yeah, it would be nice. It's just that when the clusters are all sort of tailored around Apple's platform running it, it makes it seem like it would be more likely that.

• 1:11:55Andrew Manganelli?

No, CarPlay takes over your cluster and replaces the clusters that are on it. It still has its own, I'm assuming here, but the Aston Martin still has its own UI system and will have its own screens for everything, but since it's a screen, CarPlay can take over.

• 1:12:09David Imel?

  Yes. Okay. CarPlay Ultra, everybody.

• 1:12:12Andrew Manganelli?

  Ultra.

• 1:12:12David Imel?

  CarPlay Ultra.

• 1:12:13Andrew Manganelli?

You really see that word just getting thrown around. Pro Max would have been better.

• 1:12:16David Imel?

Maybe all of WWDC is just going to be them talking about that and ignoring Apple Intelligence. Uh, okay. We also, back to Google for a hot sec, we also got the first Android 16 developer beta, of which we can actually see and touch and play with Material 3 Expressive.

• 1:12:36Andrew Manganelli?

Your boy just installed it this morning.

• 1:12:38David Imel?

How are you feeling about it so far?

• 1:12:39Andrew Manganelli?

  Um, it looks great.

• 1:12:43David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:44Andrew Manganelli?

And that's really all that I can say so far.

• 1:12:47David Imel?

Does it make you feel young and hip?

• 1:12:49Andrew Manganelli?

Well, okay, so there's more haptics and I, this is something I liked before, because when you feel, remember I told you about that Oppo phone where you clear notifications and it goes and it like, you feel the haptics of it?

• 1:12:59David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:12:59Andrew Manganelli?

There are more haptic, uh, cues and elements as you move around here, which is nice. Like when I pull the screen, like change the brightness of the sound.

• 1:13:10David Imel?

  You feel it?

• 1:13:11Speaker 01

When you feel it feels like a textured haptic. When you turn it down.

• 1:13:14Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, like it's less at the bottom and more at the full bright.

• 1:13:17Speaker 01

  There's more stuff like that.

• 1:13:19David Imel?

  Ooh.

• 1:13:19Andrew Manganelli?

I like that slider a lot.

• 1:13:20David Imel?

I don't like this slider at all.

• 1:13:21Andrew Manganelli?

Really? The first thing I noticed in looking at this is I think the sliders look really nice.

• 1:13:25Speaker 01

  Yeah visually.

• 1:13:27David Imel?

  That line looks horrible.

• 1:13:28Speaker 01

Visually, I'm liking it. Yeah, the line is kind of weird.

• 1:13:31Andrew Manganelli?

I think when you theme it in some different colors, white and black might be a really boring version of it, but like some of these like aqua themes in this article are really nice.

• 1:13:40David Imel?

So when you, when you're like starting to swipe away a notification, they had told us that when you're doing this had physics, but it also has haptics now.

• 1:13:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:13:48David Imel?

And when you're doing it, you can feel like a drag. It almost feels like friction.

• 1:13:52Speaker 01

  That's good.

• 1:13:52Andrew Manganelli?

But even in, and even in it, watch the, so we're in the notification panel. I'm starting to swipe away a notification, but even the notifications under it like

• 1:14:01David Imel?

  Start to move.

• 1:14:01Andrew Manganelli?

  Like snap away from it.

• 1:14:03David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:03Andrew Manganelli?

And you can tell are not connected. That's really good. It all moves.

• 1:14:07Speaker 01

  Multitasking the same thing. Yeah.

• 1:14:08Andrew Manganelli?

I'd put that like a 96% on the expressive meter.

• 1:14:14David Imel?

What about on the cool chart?

• 1:14:16Andrew Manganelli?

  Uh, 87.

• 1:14:17Speaker 01

  30% more expressive than before.

• 1:14:19David Imel?

  40% hip.

• 1:14:20Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:21David Imel?

Um, yeah. So you like it? You think it's cool?

• 1:14:23Speaker 01

I mean, yeah, from my 20 minutes so far of just like poking around and seeing the new aesthetic, I like the new aesthetic. I can't tell if I like it because it's just new and fresh and therefore interesting, or if it's actually better.

• 1:14:34David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:34Speaker 01

So I'm going to save my judgment to actually using it, but I would, I would expect a main channel video on this new Android 16 because there is a lot of actually better stuff as well.

• 1:14:42David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:43Speaker 01

Uh, on top of this expressive new aesthetic.

• 1:14:46Andrew Manganelli?

  I think this looks good.

• 1:14:48David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:49Speaker 01

  Alright.

• 1:14:49David Imel?

  I think it's expressive.

• 1:14:50Speaker 01

TBD. I'm gonna keep using it. Testing a whole bunch of stuff right now, but definitely will get a video up on my thoughts on it.

• 1:14:56David Imel?

Oh, we also didn't announce that Dub Dub got announced.

• 1:14:59Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:14:59Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:15:00Speaker 01

WWDC, June 9th, keynote at 1:00 PM Eastern. Be there.

• 1:15:05Andrew Manganelli?

  Subscribe.

• 1:15:05Speaker 01

It's gonna be online. Yeah, we're gonna definitely talk about it on the podcast.

• 1:15:09Andrew Manganelli?

Did we not know that? I thought we knew that.

• 1:15:10Speaker 01

  Uh, just, just got announced.

• 1:15:12David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:12Andrew Manganelli?

  It got announced yesterday.

• 1:15:13David Imel?

  Invites went out.

• 1:15:14Speaker 01

Yeah. It might have already been.

• 1:15:16Andrew Manganelli?

I think it got announced. I think invites went out.

• 1:15:18Speaker 01

  Oh, okay.

• 1:15:19Andrew Manganelli?

Oh. I'm pretty sure we've all known this for a while.

• 1:15:21Speaker 01

Not breaking news. Yeah, because it was actually on my calendar already.

• 1:15:24Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, it's been on our calendar for a long time and not even like specially.

• 1:15:28David Imel?

You can just wipe this whole section again.

• 1:15:30Andrew Manganelli?

  No, leave it.

• 1:15:32Speaker 01

It's good seeing us realize how silly we are in real time.

• 1:15:35Andrew Manganelli?

Well, I also didn't get an invite, so.

• 1:15:36Speaker 01

Oh, it's okay. Me neither. Sorry.

• 1:15:39David Imel?

You know what rhymes with Rivia?

• 1:15:41Speaker 01

The thing that we do before the next break? Trivia.

• 1:15:46David Imel?

  Very nice.

• 1:15:47Speaker 01

  Trivia, dude.

• 1:15:48David Imel?

I didn't give you a point for that.

• 1:15:49Andrew Manganelli?

  No, I need the point.

• 1:15:50Speaker 04

We give the points around here, okay?

• 1:15:53Andrew Manganelli?

I did like, someone made a suggestion that we always bet on things and we should be able to bet our points.

• 1:15:59David Imel?

  Family heat style?

• 1:16:00Andrew Manganelli?

Just like anytime during the thing, it's like if we want to make a bet to prove how confident you are, you can bet your trivia points.

• 1:16:07Speaker 01

That's a great idea. We will be.

• 1:16:08Andrew Manganelli?

The only problem is it's almost always like two years later, so you don't know how many points you're gonna have.

• 1:16:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:13Andrew Manganelli?

When it comes true or not.

• 1:16:14David Imel?

When will the Cybertruck have Apple intelligence?

• 1:16:17Andrew Manganelli?

  All right.

• 1:16:18Speaker 01

  Hopefully never.

• 1:16:20Speaker 04

I'm sure like you're like stuck in traffic and like, like Google Maps is like, turn left here. And you're like, mm, Grok, is this true?

• 1:16:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Grok fact check, please.

• 1:16:33Speaker 01

That needs to be a button.

• 1:16:35Andrew Manganelli?

  Mm, Grok. Grok, context.

• 1:16:40Andrew Manganelli?

So there was a live demo at Google. Oh, wait, wait, wait.

• 1:16:43Speaker 01

  Were you paying attention?

• 1:16:45David Imel?

  Yeah, another one.

• 1:16:46Andrew Manganelli?

All right. There was a live demo at Google I/O with a guy fixing his bike using Google Gemini Live with Pro Boost Ultra Max 2.5 or whatever the hell it's called.

• 1:16:57Speaker 01

  Flash.

• 1:16:57Andrew Manganelli?

  But.

• 1:16:58David Imel?

  Flash.

• 1:16:58Andrew Manganelli?

What brand of bike was he fixing?

• 1:17:02David Imel?

  Really?

• 1:17:02Speaker 01

  It's crazy that.

• 1:17:03Andrew Manganelli?

  Who Marquez was paying attention?

• 1:17:04David Imel?

I don't know the brand of bikes.

• 1:17:06Speaker 01

  I kind of.

• 1:17:06Andrew Manganelli?

  They said it.

• 1:17:07David Imel?

  Speedmaster.

• 1:17:08Speaker 05

  That's a, that's a watch.

• 1:17:10Speaker 04

  Oh, Yanis.

• 1:17:11Speaker 05

That's a basketball player. Keep going.

• 1:17:13Andrew Manganelli?

I just want to say, I didn't look in the comments. Last week, David talked about using Gemini Live to fix his bike chain. And people were very mad at that, which I, I think plenty of people know how to fix a bike chain. But I also don't think it's that crazy of a thing to ask.

• 1:17:26Speaker 04

I have no idea how to fix a bike chain.

• 1:17:28Andrew Manganelli?

I didn't see anyone, they're just like, get outside, you can fix a bike chain. I think that was the weirdest, I think it was the weirdest thing to get mad at people. That's the most boomer like I.

• 1:17:39Speaker 01

  It's just gatekeep, yeah, it's.

• 1:17:41Andrew Manganelli?

It felt weird, like, I mean, I fixed a bike chain before, but it's been a long time and I probably would.

• 1:17:46Speaker 04

Hardcore biker, like. You should be using AI to like cheat at school and stuff.

• 1:17:50Andrew Manganelli?

  Moron.

• 1:17:51Speaker 01

Is this one of those things where like, everyone's mad if you don't know how to change a tire? So if you ask Gemini, it's like embarrassing.

• 1:17:56Speaker 04

  Yeah, probably.

• 1:17:57Speaker 01

Like you're supposed to know how to change a bike chain or something?

• 1:17:59Speaker 04

  I guess.

• 1:18:00Andrew Manganelli?

Imagine David on the side of the road like, I really need to fix this bike to get home. But I can't ask Gemini Live or people will make fun of me. So I guess I just have to sit here.

• 1:18:09Speaker 04

Well, you never know, new Gemini that stands up for itself might be like, idiot.

• 1:18:15Speaker 04

  That's not a bike chain.

• 1:18:16Speaker 01

It's a bike chain, you should know this.

• 1:18:17Speaker 04

That's a lack of intelligence. Yeah.

• 1:18:20Speaker 01

All right, well, answers will be at the end, like usual, with trivia questions. Uh, we'll be right back.

• 1:18:39Speaker 01

Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. So AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from. But when that context is scattered across tools like threads and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying kind of blind. That's the problem Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all of these pieces together from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub and more. So nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor and GitHub Copilot. Assign them work directly or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down. What got decided and by who and more time actually shipping.

• 1:20:38Andrew Manganelli?

Welcome back. We've been talking a lot, so I have three really quick, stupid things to talk about.

• 1:20:42David Imel?

  Hell, yeah.

• 1:20:43Andrew Manganelli?

The first one, do you guys remember 3D Space Cadet pinball on Windows XP?

• 1:20:48David Imel?

  Yes.

• 1:20:48Speaker 04

  Do I?

• 1:20:49Andrew Manganelli?

  It is now on Android.

• 1:20:50David Imel?

  Wait.

• 1:20:51Andrew Manganelli?

For free, no ads, no microtransactions. I don't know how this developer put it on there without some sort of copyright infringement, but.

• 1:21:00David Imel?

  I love it.

• 1:21:00Andrew Manganelli?

You can now play fully optimized for touchscreen. Space Cadet pinball.

• 1:21:06David Imel?

  God, I love this.

• 1:21:07Andrew Manganelli?

This dude, I used to beg my uncle to use his laptop to play this all the time. And then he never got any work done, but.

• 1:21:15David Imel?

Yeah, dude, this is in Solitaire for me.

• 1:21:18Andrew Manganelli?

I think this is better than Solitaire and Minesweeper.

• 1:21:20David Imel?

It's funny thing that the things that make us excited now are just the things that we used to have before things got bad.

• 1:21:27Speaker 01

That's funny. Yeah, I do. I do talk about nostalgia a lot. And how it rarely works on me.

• 1:21:34David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:35Andrew Manganelli?

I said that out loud. You just said.

• 1:21:37Speaker 01

I need this. Yeah, it's fair.

• 1:21:40Andrew Manganelli?

It's only five megabytes from what I saw.

• 1:21:42Speaker 05

  I love this.

• 1:21:43Andrew Manganelli?

  Everything about this is perfect.

• 1:21:45Speaker 01

  I'm in.

• 1:21:45Andrew Manganelli?

  Until it gets copyrighted.

• 1:21:46Speaker 01

  Big fan.

• 1:21:47Andrew Manganelli?

All right, the next one, speaking of perfect.

• 1:21:49Speaker 01

  Yes, cool.

• 1:21:50Andrew Manganelli?

Have you ever seen a screen protector for an iPhone 16 Pro that's optimized for AI?

• 1:21:56Speaker 01

At this point, so I saw this and I thought this is either the dumbest thing ever or the smartest thing ever.

• 1:22:05David Imel?

  Let them cook.

• 1:22:07Speaker 01

Because, hear me out, we ordinarily would not talk about the screen protector. But if you were a screen protector company looking for a way to stand out, you put that little optimized for AI thing on it.

• 1:22:19David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:19Speaker 01

Knowing full well that it's complete bull****, but someone is gonna see that.

• 1:22:24David Imel?

  That's true.

• 1:22:24Speaker 01

And tweet it and it's gonna be a funny.

• 1:22:26David Imel?

  Free marketing.

• 1:22:27Speaker 01

Worthy deal and it's just gonna be, we're gonna talk about it.

• 1:22:29David Imel?

  Marketing.

• 1:22:30Andrew Manganelli?

Whoever posted it to the Linus subreddit and then reposted it to the MKBHD subreddit didn't put enough discernible information in here that I could find out who made this. And I literally even with Circle to Search could not find who made this case.

• 1:22:43Speaker 01

  So backfired.

• 1:22:43Andrew Manganelli?

So it backfired pretty hard. No, I bet, I bet people buy this with seeing the AI thing and know nothing about screen protectors or AI.

• 1:22:52Speaker 04

Counterpoint, the Chinese word for love sounds very close to AI. And maybe they're saying.

• 1:23:00Andrew Manganelli?

  Optimized for love.

• 1:23:01Speaker 04

  Optimized for love.

• 1:23:03Speaker 01

  Two birds, baby.

• 1:23:04David Imel?

Completely different thing. I am optimized for love. But yet.

• 1:23:11Andrew Manganelli?

I'm still. I just wanna say, I'm still crushing at Space Cadet right now. I still got it, baby.

• 1:23:17Speaker 01

Is it called Space Cadet? I'm installing it right now.

• 1:23:19Andrew Manganelli?

All right, well, I'll talk about the last stupid thing.

• 1:23:21Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:23:22Andrew Manganelli?

Cause it's my favorite stupid thing of this week.

• 1:23:23David Imel?

We're really late to this, by the way.

• 1:23:25Andrew Manganelli?

It happened like last week, didn't it?

• 1:23:27David Imel?

  I guess so, yeah.

• 1:23:28Andrew Manganelli?

  I think. Remember HBO?

• 1:23:30Speaker 05

  Do I?

• 1:23:31Andrew Manganelli?

And remember how they made a streaming service called HBO Max?

• 1:23:34David Imel?

  Yep.

• 1:23:34Speaker 04

Which, remember before that it was HBO Go.

• 1:23:37Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:23:38Speaker 04

Which got merged with HBO Max.

• 1:23:39David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:40Speaker 04

And then spun off into just Max.

• 1:23:42Andrew Manganelli?

Because someone there decided, hey, we have decades worth of name recognition, we should throw that away and spend millions of dollars doing it.

• 1:23:50Speaker 04

Dude, it was even worse than that. They said, we want to, the reason was like, we want to start bringing in more like low quality and reality shows. Which classes, which clashes with the high quality brand recognition of HBO.

• 1:24:04Speaker 01

That was the problem, like HBO Max.

• 1:24:06David Imel?

Max was supposed to be like HBO, the brand, they were like, this is sacred and it has to be the high quality stuff that people know HBO for. So Max, we want to be like Paramount where we have just freaking everything and or Netflix. We need to have a service that competes with Netflix that has like Love Island on it.

• 1:24:22Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:24:23David Imel?

So that's why they made HBO Max, but then they just changed it to Max because they didn't want it to be associated with HBO. But it also had some HBO stuff.

• 1:24:30Andrew Manganelli?

But there was HBO still just a channel, like a premium channel. There's no streaming service anymore. No, but I mean, once they went to from HBO Max to just Max, where was HBO?

• 1:24:40Speaker 04

  They so HBO.

• 1:24:41Andrew Manganelli?

  Just its premium channel.

• 1:24:43Speaker 04

Still on Max. But they wanted Max. They didn't want the, the, the, the slop that they were trying to put on to Max to be associated with HBO.

• 1:24:54David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:54Speaker 04

  But now.

• 1:24:55Andrew Manganelli?

Don't pat yourself on the back HBO. No one thinks of you like that. You just ruined name recognition. But anyways, yeah, sorry, Ellis. Do you want to the grand reveal of the new name?

• 1:25:04Speaker 04

No, I, I, you please. I stole all of your.

• 1:25:07Andrew Manganelli?

  It's just HBO Max again.

• 1:25:09David Imel?

  Yeah, baby.

• 1:25:11Andrew Manganelli?

  So that's the story.

• 1:25:12David Imel?

I will say their social teams went hard on this. They were, they were very funny.

• 1:25:16Andrew Manganelli?

They were pretty funny, but also just like, don't be a moron in the first place.

• 1:25:20David Imel?

That's my thing. Yeah, but it's not the social media manager's fault.

• 1:25:23Andrew Manganelli?

It is. That's true. Someone could have spoke up.

• 1:25:26Speaker 04

Guys, we're not, we're not, this is not the right take on this. Okay. This is not the right take in a world.

• 1:25:32David Imel?

There is no right take. This doesn't matter.

• 1:25:33Speaker 04

In a world where streaming services are full of TB's and goo boos. We should be thanking them.

• 1:25:40David Imel?

They should have renamed this to.

• 1:25:41Andrew Manganelli?

Hobo. Yeah, they should have just added a vowel before the H and the B and they had it.

• 1:25:47David Imel?

  I don't know about that.

• 1:25:48Andrew Manganelli?

But yeah, so maybe don't ruin decades of name recognition and spend millions of dollars doing it.

• 1:25:54David Imel?

Yeah. After this, I posted HBO go to the polls. And

• 1:25:58Speaker 04

  That's good, David.

• 1:25:59Andrew Manganelli?

  Can I say?

• 1:25:59David Imel?

  That's good. Thank you.

• 1:26:00Andrew Manganelli?

Just to round this back out to the beginning of the episode, that's what the API Pokémon intelligence felt like. That felt like Google's HBO.

• 1:26:07David Imel?

  Hello, fellow kids.

• 1:26:08Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:08Speaker 04

  To do that.

• 1:26:09David Imel?

That's what I was doing as well.

• 1:26:10Speaker 04

And then like 10 minutes later, have a Google executive be like, we are like constantly checking to make sure like AI and AGI is like safe and not gonna kill everyone. I was like, then don't make it play Pokemon. Then don't, don't include that part.

• 1:26:23Andrew Manganelli?

There's a direct correlation between those two things.

• 1:26:26David Imel?

  Between Pokemon and AGI.

• 1:26:28Speaker 01

Is there a pause button in this game?

• 1:26:30Andrew Manganelli?

Is there a pause button on a pinball machine? No, Marquez. This is realistic.

• 1:26:34Speaker 01

I don't know how I'm supposed to get back into this podcast.

• 1:26:36Speaker 04

  You can't.

• 1:26:37Speaker 01

  Honey. Pinball.

• 1:26:38Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 1:26:38Speaker 01

  I am crushing.

• 1:26:39Speaker 04

Just, that's what I'm saying. Still got it.

• 1:26:41Speaker 01

  Still got it.

• 1:26:42Andrew Manganelli?

  All right, well, I guess.

• 1:26:43Speaker 01

  Didn't have it.

• 1:26:43Andrew Manganelli?

You're gonna have to pause that if you want to participate in trivia.

• 1:26:46Speaker 01

Oh, that's so unfortunate. Cause I have so many points right now. It's my first ball.

• 1:26:50Speaker 04

  He's gonna lose them.

• 1:26:51Speaker 01

You know, it's funny that I wrote both my answers already, so we're good.

• 1:26:54David Imel?

Yeah, but then I'll see them.

• 1:26:56Speaker 01

  Let's go.

• 1:26:56Andrew Manganelli?

  Yes, let's go.

• 1:26:58Speaker 01

Adam, what was your score? Just curious.

• 1:27:00Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, I have no idea. I closed it already.

• 1:27:02Speaker 01

  Aw, man.

• 1:27:02Andrew Manganelli?

I had a job to do, Marquez.

• 1:27:04David Imel?

Some of us work around here.

• 1:27:06Speaker 01

You guys are talking about Macs, which I know nothing about. I've fully tuned out all of the HBO Mac stuff. I have no idea.

• 1:27:11Speaker 04

  Whoa, whoa, whoa.

• 1:27:12Andrew Manganelli?

Well, actually, so that nothing changed.

• 1:27:13Speaker 04

  Anyway, let's do some trivia.

• 1:27:15Speaker 01

  Let's do some trivia.

• 1:27:16David Imel?

This is all getting cut out.

• 1:27:16Speaker 04

  Guys, during Google I/O.

• 1:27:19Speaker 01

I can't believe I'm gonna have to end this game.

• 1:27:21Speaker 04

  He's.

• 1:27:22Andrew Manganelli?

  Faster, Ellis.

• 1:27:23Speaker 04

Guys, remember Hyper Bowl Plus? The best Windows game, Windows XP included game? Nope?

• 1:27:29Andrew Manganelli?

  No.

• 1:27:29Speaker 04

Great. All right, so. Question number one, during I/O, Rajan was talking about baseball and data analytics and how Google AI, one of the Geminis or whatever, Gemmas, whatever they're doing.

• 1:27:42David Imel?

  Gems.

• 1:27:43Speaker 04

Can it, one of the gems?

• 1:27:44David Imel?

  It wasn't a gem.

• 1:27:45Speaker 04

  That, I don't remember. I frankly don't particularly care.

• 1:27:50Speaker 04

But one of them was doing some Googling about baseball bats and compiling some stats.

• 1:27:55David Imel?

  Nice.

• 1:27:55Speaker 04

What kind of baseball bat was he collecting? Was he, was the AI collecting data on?

• 1:28:03David Imel?

  Can I describe it?

• 1:28:04Andrew Manganelli?

No. You can describe the name of it.

• 1:28:06Speaker 04

In describing it, you will like, you should arrive at the name. Like, the name is a description of it, so.

• 1:28:11David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:28:17Speaker 05

Marquez, are you gonna cover your second answer?

• 1:28:20Speaker 01

  Uh, I erase it.

• 1:28:21Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:28:21Speaker 01

Yeah. Also, you can pause and pinball, you just don't want the second ball.

• 1:28:25Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, well, you have to lose a ball.

• 1:28:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:28:28David Imel?

  He lost a life.

• 1:28:29Speaker 01

Yeah, I did. How to lose a life. Okay.

• 1:28:32Speaker 04

Interesting. David, would you like to go first?

• 1:28:35David Imel?

  Okay, I said center weighted.

• 1:28:37Speaker 04

I'm sorry, David, that is incorrect.

• 1:28:38David Imel?

  That's the description.

• 1:28:40Speaker 01

It is the description, but the name was torpedo bat.

• 1:28:43Speaker 04

  That is correct.

• 1:28:44David Imel?

How is torpedo the description of center weighted?

• 1:28:46Andrew Manganelli?

  It looks like a torpedo.

• 1:28:50Speaker 01

  Just weight distribution.

• 1:28:51Andrew Manganelli?

  I put torpedo, sorry, yeah.

• 1:28:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:28:53Speaker 04

All right, so that is one point for Marquez.

• 1:28:57David Imel?

  Can I appeal?

• 1:28:58Speaker 04

  Sure, yeah, appeal.

• 1:29:00David Imel?

  It's gonna take you.

• 1:29:00Speaker 04

  What is your appeal?

• 1:29:01Andrew Manganelli?

We'll see you in court in six months.

• 1:29:02David Imel?

  I was right.

• 1:29:04Speaker 04

All right, very good. I'm sorry, David, center weighted was not the answer we were looking for.

• 1:29:09David Imel?

  Middle out.

• 1:29:10Speaker 04

But I encourage you to play again. But before we get to our second question, a quick update on the score. Andrew, you are still the caboose of this trivia train with 18 points. Excuse, is that, no, 13 points, I'm sorry. I'm sorry, it's even more dismal than I thought. Marquez.

• 1:29:35Andrew Manganelli?

It's the most points I think I've had in a regular season.

• 1:29:38Speaker 04

  That can't be true.

• 1:29:39Andrew Manganelli?

  No, maybe that's 20, anyways.

• 1:29:41Speaker 04

Yeah, Marquez, 24 points in his Kobe era, but perhaps about to exit his Kobe era if he gets this next question right. David, trivia maestro.

• 1:29:56David Imel?

  Let's go.

• 1:29:57Speaker 04

The Mozart of getting trivia questions right, creating a knowledge symphony with 28 points.

• 1:30:04David Imel?

  Wow.

• 1:30:05Andrew Manganelli?

Is that the highest regular season?

• 1:30:07Speaker 04

No, no, you guys have been in the 30s before.

• 1:30:08Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:09David Imel?

  Be sure.

• 1:30:10Speaker 01

He just might have the biggest lead over third place.

• 1:30:16Speaker 04

  But now.

• 1:30:17Speaker 01

  That we've ever seen.

• 1:30:19Speaker 04

Uh, David's reign of terror ends now.

• 1:30:24Speaker 04

During the live demo when they were fixing the bike, what brand was the bike?

• 1:30:27David Imel?

  Ah, shoot.

• 1:30:28Speaker 04

  Told you.

• 1:30:29David Imel?

  It was.

• 1:30:30Speaker 04

  It was.

• 1:30:31David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:31Speaker 04

  Yeah, they were.

• 1:30:32David Imel?

  It was a nice one.

• 1:30:33Speaker 04

  Actually, he was not outside.

• 1:30:35Speaker 01

  That's true.

• 1:30:36Speaker 04

  He was inside.

• 1:30:36Speaker 01

  True. How did he get?

• 1:30:38David Imel?

You know what I didn't understand about that? He was in like a bike shop kinda situation.

• 1:30:42Speaker 04

  It was his garage.

• 1:30:43Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, like his garage workshop.

• 1:30:44David Imel?

He had like the thing that you put your bike on upside down, you know, the tools, like he seemed like an expert, but he didn't know anything about his bike.

• 1:30:51Andrew Manganelli?

I think it was just a workbench.

• 1:30:52David Imel?

  Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah.

• 1:30:53Speaker 04

All right, flip him and read. What do we got?

• 1:30:57Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh.

• 1:30:57Speaker 04

  David, what'd you say?

• 1:30:59David Imel?

  Schwinn.

• 1:31:01Speaker 04

  Andrew?

• 1:31:01Andrew Manganelli?

  I put Trek.

• 1:31:03Speaker 04

  Marquez?

• 1:31:03Speaker 01

  It was a Huffy, right?

• 1:31:04Speaker 04

  It was a Huffy.

• 1:31:06Speaker 01

  Don't know.

• 1:31:06Andrew Manganelli?

  Is Trek a bike?

• 1:31:07David Imel?

  Remember that.

• 1:31:07Speaker 01

  Trek is a bike.

• 1:31:08Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 1:31:09Speaker 01

  Schwinn is a bike.

• 1:31:10Speaker 04

  Donkey!

• 1:31:10Speaker 01

Schwinn is a bike. Huffy is the bike.

• 1:31:12Speaker 04

  I have a Trek bike.

• 1:31:13Speaker 01

  Donkey.

• 1:31:14Speaker 04

Well, Marquez, congratulations on your 25th point. David, you are still on track to Schwinn this season of trivia.

• 1:31:24Andrew Manganelli?

  Woof.

• 1:31:24Speaker 04

And, uh, anyone else have anything to add before we, uh, take a house?

• 1:31:30Andrew Manganelli?

  Adam's like, don't add anything.

• 1:31:32David Imel?

No, Marquez, please take me out.

• 1:31:35Speaker 01

That was great. Fantastic episode. We talked so much. Thank you all for watching and for listening. For subscribing, of course, as well, because we're, again, we're gonna match, we're gonna be lockstep with the MKBSG channel over here on Waveform. Uh, but of course, we'll be back next week on Friday, like usual. See you then.

• 1:31:49David Imel?

  Googly-o.

• 1:31:50Speaker 01

  Peace.

• 1:31:51Andrew Manganelli?

I'm just imagining we wake up on Monday and we have 20 million subs on the podcast just so we can race.

• 1:31:56David Imel?

  That'd be dope.

• 1:31:57Andrew Manganelli?

  That'd be sick.

• 1:31:58David Imel?

  It will happen.

• 1:31:59Andrew Manganelli?

It could. Waveform is produced by Adam, Melina, and Ellis Roben, and part of the Vox Media Podcast Network. And our track or music was created by Vane Sil.

• 1:32:05David Imel?

  Bingo.

• 1:32:06Speaker 04

• 1:32:23Speaker 04

How do you say 100 gecs in Spanish?

• 1:32:26Speaker 00

You've been asked to run the company's social channels, but company content plays by its own set of rules. It needs a logo in the first three seconds, but it can't feel like an ad. It needs subtitles, except when it doesn't. It needs to run at two times speed and deliver a complex message, simply, of course, within nine by 16. Thankfully, your company has Canva, so you can easily edit your video and every version of it. What will you Canva today?

Support for the show comes from Fetch Pet Insurance. If you have a dog or cat, here's something you need to know. According to Forbes, one in three pets will need emergency treatment this year. And every six seconds, a pet parent gets hit with a vet bill over $1,000. Vet bills don't have to hit that hard. Fetch is pet insurance that covers accidents, illnesses, and emergency visits and pays back up to 90% of eligible vet bills. No wonder pet parents give Fetch an excellent rating on TrustPilot.
