Modular Tech is Cool Again!

This week, there's a ton of stuff to get into. Not only is there a new modular CMF phone that Marques wants to talk about, but there's also the new Slate EV truck that everyone has plenty of thoughts about. Besides that, they also get into the new Meta AI app, OpenAI experimenting with shopping features, and of course, gadget tariffs. It's a long one this week but a fun one! Enjoy! Support for the show comes from JIRA by Atlassian. AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from. But when that context is scattered across tools, threads, and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying blind. That's the problem that JIRA solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all these pieces together from JIRA, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With JIRA, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping.

The Rivian already kind of proves that the R1S and the R1T are the same thing, just with a different top on it.

• 1:38Speaker 01

  Pretty close, yeah.

• 1:38Andrew Manganelli?

So like, this is just the cheaper, different version of it. Don't you dare sneeze, Ellis.

• 1:45Speaker 01

I'm sorry, I tried to stop it.

• 1:52Speaker 01

Yeah, what is up, people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts. I'm Marques.

• 1:57Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm Andrew.

• 1:58David Imel?

And I'm Nintendo Switch. It's not funny anymore. I think we did it one too many times.

• 2:02Andrew Manganelli?

That's fair. Now two too many times.

• 2:04David Imel?

  Two too many times.

• 2:05Andrew Manganelli?

  Switch too many times?

• 2:06David Imel?

Switch too many times. I'm David.

• 2:08Speaker 01

  And today, we've got...

• 2:11Andrew Manganelli?

  Two days?

• 2:12Speaker 01

Damn, this is good SEO. No, we have a lot of stuff.

• 2:16David Imel?

  Everyone's unhappy about this.

• 2:17Speaker 01

Insane, insane intro, guys. I don't know how we're gonna get through this pod. No, there's, there's a lot of stuff this week. There's a lot of headlines. There's some new phones. There was some new EVs, new companies, new headlines, new disasters.

• 2:30Andrew Manganelli?

  New I/O.

• 2:31Speaker 01

New potential clowns and crowns, all kinds of things happening. Yeah, new I/O. So it's been a lot. But I do want to at least ask, did you guys actually preorder the Switch 2? Because the date has come and gone.

• 2:42David Imel?

  Yes.

• 2:42Speaker 01

  I remember, you did not.

• 2:44Andrew Manganelli?

  No.

• 2:45Speaker 01

  You did.

• 2:45Andrew Manganelli?

You guys all were talking about it and I had some FOMO, but then I also didn't feel like opening my laptop, so I must not be that interested.

• 2:52David Imel?

It was at midnight ET, so it was pretty, pretty annoying.

• 2:54Speaker 01

I remember, yeah, I remember I was, I was somewhere on the West Coast and I remember seeing that the work slack was popping off at 9pm and I was like, that's kinda weird, isn't it? And then I was like, oh, it's because the Switch is not.

• 3:05David Imel?

Yeah, yeah. So pretty much every single website exploded as usually happens when things get dropped, pre-orders get dropped.

• 3:13David Imel?

Ironically, I think that these websites were releasing batches of orders. So like Walmart at 12:25 randomly, you could just start buying them again.

• 3:24David Imel?

And I actually had ordered one through Target and then they canceled my order 20 minutes later. So then I had to go to Walmart. Anyway, ironically, a lot of people had the most success just going to the physical stores because GameStop was open at like 11 the next day and people just went, went to the GameStop and there was like eight people in line and everyone was like, oh. People are not used to you, like buying things at stores anymore.

• 3:45Andrew Manganelli?

I think that actually would have been the smartest route, to like go to a GameStop at 11.

• 3:49David Imel?

Yeah, because they have certain allocations, so. Anyway, we probably won't talk about this again until.

• 3:54Andrew Manganelli?

Someone gets their hands on it.

• 3:56David Imel?

  Until it's actually out.

• 3:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:57David Imel?

  Until it's actually out.

• 3:58Speaker 01

But at least one Switch has been secured, so that's great.

• 4:00David Imel?

  Yes.

• 4:01Speaker 01

Okay, we gotta talk about this slate truck. We got all, I have so many thoughts on this slate truck. I was trying to come up with an analogy actually for it, and I think there's actually like four or five correct analogies. One of them I think Ellis will really like. I think it's the iPhone 12 mini of, of trucks.

• 4:18David Imel?

  I need to hear that.

• 4:19Speaker 01

I also think it's, I also think it's the Zenfone 9 of trucks. I also think it's the Project Aura of trucks.

• 4:25David Imel?

  Yes.

• 4:26Speaker 01

There are many things, but first we should just explain what it actually is. That's another good one, the Spirit Airlines.

• 4:31David Imel?

That's true, choose your own adventure.

• 4:33Speaker 01

So, the slate truck, what it is, it's fascinating. Uh, they started making headlines, uh, as it was fully unveiled out of like stealth mode, nobody kind of saw this coming.

• 4:42David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 4:42Speaker 01

But it was a new company with a new proposition for a vehicle. It's a electric truck, but it is the ultimate most bare bones truck possible. And then you can customize your way into the truck that you want. So this base truck will be $27,000 after incentives, maybe about 20 grand.

• 5:00David Imel?

  Will be.

• 5:01Speaker 01

  Will be, allegedly.

• 5:02David Imel?

  Allegedly.

• 5:03Speaker 01

And it'll be completely empty, bare bones, no stereo, no displays, no tow hitch.

• 5:10David Imel?

  It has no paint.

• 5:11Speaker 01

It's just plastic, molded plastic. And if you want to change the color, you can wrap it. And if you want to add a display, you can add it. If you want to add a speaker, you can do that. If you want to add power windows, you can do that, but it is fully blank to start. So the appeal is obvious. It's cheap and it's customizable.

• 5:30David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 5:31Speaker 01

It's also small. Well, that's debatable. Uh, it's small for sure, so it's a two seater with a small bed, but you could actually even potentially do the add on that turns it into a sedan. You like bolt on like a roof and some more seats.

• 5:46Andrew Manganelli?

  Like a crossover.

• 5:47Speaker 01

  Like a crossover, yeah.

• 5:48Andrew Manganelli?

I also would argue the bed's not, it's a five foot bed. It's bigger than a Rivian.

• 5:53Speaker 01

So a five foot bed, but only a two seater cab.

• 5:56David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 5:56Speaker 01

  So, yeah, a small truck.

• 5:58Andrew Manganelli?

Same size as a Rivian truck bed?

• 6:00Speaker 01

Give or take, the Rivian's like a four and a half foot bed.

• 6:02David Imel?

It looks very small, which makes me very happy because in Japan, they have all those really tiny trucks and I really want something.

• 6:10Andrew Manganelli?

There's like the, they're called key trucks. I was looking this all up this morning.

• 6:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 6:13Andrew Manganelli?

They're so cool. There are so many people that like.

• 6:16David Imel?

There's Subaru ones that are amazing.

• 6:17Andrew Manganelli?

The Subaru ones awesome, it's like the Subaru Sandham, I think, or something. Um, but like, uh, people import these into the US because they're like. Fairly cheap, they're manual, they're easy, the truck bed is big enough for a lot of like, things that wouldn't fit into the back of a big SUV and it's pure function.

• 6:35David Imel?

I think someone said they're banned in New York State, the imported.

• 6:38Speaker 01

I've seen it in my town, New Jersey.

• 6:40Speaker 04

Yeah, in New York City. I forget the exact rule, but you're not allowed to have them in New York City. And they're called, they're pronounced K trucks.

• 6:46Andrew Manganelli?

K trucks. Okay. A video I watched said key truck, so.

• 6:50David Imel?

  Well, they are K E I, so.

• 6:52Speaker 01

So, just a couple other like baseline specs to get it out the way. The essential baseline version is rear wheel drive, single motor, roughly 150 miles of range. You can upgrade to an all-wheel drive drivetrain. I think that's something that they would do, not you. You can also upgrade to a larger battery. It'll get you about 240 miles of range.

• 7:14David Imel?

Yeah, it's actually an additional battery that they put in there.

• 7:16Speaker 01

  They just add battery.

• 7:17David Imel?

  They added an additional battery.

• 7:19Speaker 01

Whole other battery. And yeah, there's just, if you go on their website, you can play with the customization.

• 7:24Andrew Manganelli?

Wait, did you have that? I want to make the most expensive slate possible.

• 7:27Speaker 01

  Well, so that's the thing.

• 7:28Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, you can't do that yet?

• 7:29Speaker 01

You have no idea how expensive the most expensive slate is because you don't know how much the extras cost. All you know is that they cost extra. So they give you the base price, which gets the headlines really going. And so, oh, this is a $20,000 truck.

• 7:44David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 7:46Speaker 01

But we don't know, I mean, I assume the, the business model is higher margins on accessories and eventually building you up to a 20, 30, 40, 50,000 dollar truck when you, when you spec it the way you want. But you know, that's not the appeal. The appeal is it's customized. It's exactly what you want. It's not too much. It's small. I would love to go through the analogies now of why this is the insert blank here of trucks. Spirit Airlines, I think is the obvious one because you know, the Spirit Airlines thing is, is.

• 8:19Andrew Manganelli?

The basis of it is I want a, a vehicle that drives and has a bed and every other thing out, the, the Spirit Airlines is I want to fly to a place.

• 8:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 8:29Andrew Manganelli?

Do you want to keep your shoes on? Probably another 30 bucks. Like that bag, four inches too big, more monies.

• 8:36Speaker 01

Yeah. Would you, uh, would you add power windows back?

• 8:39David Imel?

  No.

• 8:39Speaker 01

  You keep the rolling windows?

• 8:40David Imel?

I love rolling windows down, man. Manually, hand cranking that [BLEEP].

• 8:44Speaker 01

  Actually?

• 8:45David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 8:45Andrew Manganelli?

I said the same thing. Everyone said I was crazy.

• 8:47David Imel?

No, it takes me back. It takes me back to a simpler time.

• 8:50Andrew Manganelli?

  I think.

• 8:50David Imel?

When I was in my dad's truck and I had to do this, you know?

• 8:53Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, one, how often are you opening your windows?

• 8:57David Imel?

All the time. It's warm out.

• 8:59Andrew Manganelli?

Dude, it's getting to the point where windows open and highway driving is like definitely not worth it.

• 9:03David Imel?

  No.

• 9:03Andrew Manganelli?

One, two, it's, it's almost too hot already.

• 9:06David Imel?

The other thing is, it's, uh, it's about to raining. Your passenger side windows open. We gotta, you gotta pull over.

• 9:12Andrew Manganelli?

You gotta put one foot on the wheel, little.

• 9:14David Imel?

One foot on the gas, one foot in the grave, you know what I mean?

• 9:17Andrew Manganelli?

It's plastic. You can just wipe it right off.

• 9:19Speaker 01

Yeah, that, it's, okay, that's an option. Yeah, you probably add the stereo back, I'm guessing. You probably add.

• 9:24Andrew Manganelli?

I forgot the stereo. That one's pretty rough.

• 9:26David Imel?

It doesn't have a stereo or a touchscreen, which is very funny, but it does come with a phone mount.

• 9:29Andrew Manganelli?

And you can, it also has a speaker mount, so you could just put a JBL flip in there. And there you go. That's your sound system.

• 9:34David Imel?

  You know?

• 9:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:35David Imel?

  That's something you could do.

• 9:36Speaker 01

  That's fine.

• 9:37David Imel?

I gotta say, their website is like so cool. It has, there's, there are 25 options like right on their website. It's really cool. Site showing all the things that you can do with it. And there's definitely one of these that will appeal to every single person on the planet.

• 9:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:50David Imel?

  Which is very cute.

• 9:52Speaker 01

Everyone except people who buy trucks.

• 9:54Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, their SEO is terrible because I literally cannot find the website. I'm trying.

• 9:58David Imel?

Oh, it's because Slate is also a publication.

• 10:01Andrew Manganelli?

And it's also just like pulling everyone else's SEOs.

• 10:04David Imel?

Slate dot auto. Just type that in.

• 10:05Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay, thank you.

• 10:06David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 10:07Speaker 01

So, okay, Spirit Airlines analogy makes perfect sense.

• 10:10David Imel?

  Okay.

• 10:10Speaker 01

Here's why I think it's the, I'll go next with the, uh, the iPhone 12 mini.

• 10:16David Imel?

I would love to know this one. Okay, let's hear it.

• 10:18Speaker 01

Um, and this is similar to the Zenfone, but in the US where most people buy trucks, where the most popular vehicle is the Ford F-150, where the second most popular vehicle is the Silverado, and where people buy massive trucks all the time, not because they're forced on people, but because that's what people just want. A small truck like this will have a very enthusiastic niche community that loves it. But that community will not be large enough to keep it on sale for long enough to sustain, just like the iPhone 12 mini. It lasted two generations and then it was canceled for what? A plus, a bigger phone, because people buy bigger phones.

• 11:02Speaker 01

And in the US, which is where this company is apparently is supposed to be based, where the factory is going to be, where the manufacturing is going to be, where they're going to start selling. People just don't buy small trucks.

• 11:12David Imel?

  I have a counter argument.

• 11:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:13David Imel?

But I also have a counter to my counter argument.

• 11:16Speaker 01

  I'm ready.

• 11:17David Imel?

Okay. My counter argument would be, a lot of the people in the US that buy trucks don't use the truck. Like, they don't use the value of the truck.

• 11:26Speaker 01

  Most of them.

• 11:26Speaker 04

Everyone who buys a truck in the US does not.

• 11:28David Imel?

  Not everyone.

• 11:30Speaker 04

  99.999%.

• 11:33David Imel?

  Correct.

• 11:33Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 11:34David Imel?

And I think that, like, the basis of this car is that it's a truck, but that's only because you can add things onto the back to make it a different kind of car. You know what I mean? So it starts as a truck, but you can turn it into a crossover, you can turn it into like a roll cage thing, you can turn whatever you want. So it's like, yes, it's a truck, but it's also everything else, which I find interesting. Also, people in like smaller, well, not smaller cities, but people in cities who kind of like want the flexibility of a truck, but they don't want to use the truck all the time. Like, having a smaller one like this is really cool. I just love that idea in general.

• 12:14Andrew Manganelli?

I like, wait, sorry, were you finished with that?

• 12:17David Imel?

I forgot my counter to my counter.

• 12:18Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, I thought that was the counter to your counter already.

• 12:21Speaker 01

I can give you the counter to that counter.

• 12:23Andrew Manganelli?

Well, I think like going off of what he said almost is the counter to his counter, where it is like this because it's cheap and because it's super bare bones. If you're someone who like does need the bed of a truck. Times like right now, my brother in law parks this like 1995 F-150 in my yard because both of us use it here and there and he bought it for like two grand and it's falling apart, but it

• 12:48David Imel?

  Just have it.

• 12:49Andrew Manganelli?

You know, it keeps you on the road for like a couple hours of like one day every two months. You need it.

• 12:54David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 12:55Andrew Manganelli?

Like if you were to buy a of like sedan, that was your everyday commuter car. And then this, you could get that for way cheaper than an F-150. And like this, this bed space is a little smaller, but I think most people using the bed space of a truck don't need the giant one. If you're towing, this is never gonna be your towing truck.

• 13:14David Imel?

My question also becomes like, how difficult is it to take off the attachments and stuff? Because most of the time I would probably want to use it to look like, kind of like a Subaru, like a crossover.

• 13:24Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 13:24David Imel?

But then sometimes if I was helping my friend move, I'd be like, time to break out the truck part.

• 13:29Speaker 01

I don't think that one will be easily removable. I think if you're turning it into a Jeep, the way it kind of looks, I think that's a more permanent alteration, kind of like the drivetrain alterations. They said they wanted to make it easy to do your own modifications for the car, except for things that had high voltage.

• 13:45Andrew Manganelli?

My guess, if it's, there's a back that looks kind of similar to like the old Bronco.

• 13:50David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 13:50Andrew Manganelli?

Which is, you know, a bigger version of this, but kind of similar to where like it was a truck where it had this like detachable roof on the back and like the seats could come out and it could kind of be.

• 14:00David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 14:01Andrew Manganelli?

So like, I think there might be one of these, you know, they're just showing a bunch of different ways to do this, but some of these enclosures in the backend seats, looks like they may be possible to get taken out.

• 14:14David Imel?

Maybe. Yeah. And then this is all speculating because they kind of don't have answers for us on the website.

• 14:18Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, I wish there was a builder. I wish I would play with this for hours if there was a full, where is it?

• 14:24David Imel?

The builder appears once you reserve one.

• 14:27Andrew Manganelli?

I have to pay $50 to play with it.

• 14:30David Imel?

Which I did, I reserved one. And so they sent me a link to play with the builder.

• 14:35Andrew Manganelli?

Hold on, Slate, hear me out.

• 14:37David Imel?

  Okay.

• 14:38Andrew Manganelli?

Add the builder before the reserve thing and I can guarantee you will get more reservations. I, there's like keyboard sites that do this where you can customize all the different parts. I, and I play with it so many times that eventually I just bought one. Like I had customized one like 50 times and went, I just have to press buy this time.

• 14:56Speaker 05

But they need the $50 to pay for the server calls to run that builder.

• 15:00Andrew Manganelli?

I bet you it would result in more reservations if they let you customize all the things, even without showing prices, just like an idea and messing around with it.

• 15:09Speaker 01

Yeah. So it is, so that is the thing. It is a $50 reservation. Uh, I think they will get a lot of $50 reservations, judging by how often I've seen it on social media and how often I've seen people talking about it. There's already plenty of people reserving it.

• 15:22David Imel?

  I'm interested in this.

• 15:23Speaker 01

And you can get in line for $50. If you don't like the price at the end, you can cancel, but it's just like 50 bucks. Yeah, sure. Let's throw in and see what happens.

• 15:29Speaker 05

I was gonna say, where can you cancel? Because I was looking and I cannot find it.

• 15:33Speaker 01

I haven't looked yet. Maybe it's really hard to cancel.

• 15:35Speaker 05

I don't know if you can, I think you have to like do the whole contact us, go through the whole process.

• 15:40Speaker 01

I'm sure once they come out with the builder and you realize the price of the truck you want is 40 grand, they'll have to give you a way to cancel.

• 15:46Speaker 05

We'll see. Maybe I'm just out 50 bucks.

• 15:48Speaker 01

  I really, I mean, the 50 bucks is gone. I don't, I don't think I'm gonna get that back.

• 15:52David Imel?

This is NACS as well, right?

• 15:53Speaker 01

  Yeah, it is.

• 15:54David Imel?

  That's pretty cool.

• 15:56Speaker 01

It's funny, there's a couple EVs I've started to see shipping that are finally allegedly NACS native. The new EV6 refresh is NACS native. I'm getting off topic. I was gonna give you the counter to your counter.

• 16:07David Imel?

  Oh.

• 16:08Speaker 01

Which is you, you said, uh, counterpoint, most people in the US who buy trucks don't use it as a truck.

• 16:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 16:14Speaker 01

And my counter to that counter is that's never stopped anyone from buying a truck.

• 16:18Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, you're forgetting the ego part.

• 16:20Speaker 01

They just buy the big truck anyway.

• 16:21David Imel?

  That's true.

• 16:22Speaker 01

So it's not like, oh, you know, I just realized I have this truck, but I don't really use it for truck things. Maybe I'll get a smaller one. No, they all just.

• 16:28David Imel?

I mean, they have a really cool comparison thing here where they show it versus a Silverado, a Maverick and a 1985 Toyota SR5 pickup. And it shows like a size comparison. It's like, it's only like two thirds of the size of the Silverado.

• 16:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 16:42Andrew Manganelli?

And it's smaller than the Maverick.

• 16:43David Imel?

Smaller than the Maverick, which is already a small truck. And then it's about the same size.

• 16:48Speaker 01

slightly bigger than the 85 Toyota SR5. So, I don't know, I could probably park this in Brooklyn is all I'm saying. No, you could. Okay, my other two analogies real quick. Okay. It's the project aura of trucks. Yes. You remember project aura? Oh, absolutely. What happened to project aura? You know, Google happened to project aura.

• 17:05Andrew Manganelli?

  Can you explain project aura?

• 17:06Speaker 01

Project aura was the dream of a fully modular smartphone. Where you could, you know, you, parts would get old and you'd just pop it out and pop a new piece in. Oh, speaker got old, speaker upgrade, I'll just buy the new module. Oh, it's getting a little slow, I'll pop the CPU module out, drop a new one in. More storage.

• 17:23Andrew Manganelli?

My counter argument to that is that like, we all know that those really specific techie parts don't work very well together where like something like an EV just needs to be a good base. And then you pretty much can just put stuff on top because like the Rivian already kind of proves that the R1S and the R1T are the same thing, just with a different top on it.

• 17:44Speaker 01

  Pretty close, yeah.

• 17:44Andrew Manganelli?

So like this is just the cheaper, different version of it. Don't you dare sneeze, Els.

• 17:51Andrew Manganelli?

I'm sorry, I tried to stop it.

• 17:53Speaker 01

I, I agree. I think the modular part that is

• 17:57Andrew Manganelli?

  I think it has

• 17:57Speaker 01

closer to project aura is that, again, it's mostly a small niche group of people that actually care about and buy with that in mind.

• 18:06Andrew Manganelli?

I guess all I wanted to say is I think this has a better chance than project aura did. I think project aura has zero chance ever.

• 18:13Speaker 01

Oh yeah, that's fair. That's very fair. Project aura was like a nerd's dream. But it was a nerd's dream because we are all like, this is very unlikely to actually work technically, but it is still a cool idea.

• 18:25Andrew Manganelli?

Project aura was like the pinnacle of Kickstarter campaign cool videos back then. It was in like the peak of that time.

• 18:33Speaker 01

It was like you can sell on the market and you can sell different pieces. You can 3D print things. You can do this. And I was like, this is the ultimate. Yeah, but there's just not a market for that. Yeah, it was, it was kind of the same thing where like it was such a cool universally approved idea that the video about it went viral outside of the regular tech community. Yeah. And people were like, oh yeah, modular phone. Yeah, yeah. You know, the iPhone doesn't do this. Android phones don't do this. We all think this is a great idea. But when it came time to actually support it and buy it. There just wasn't enough.

• 19:03David Imel?

Yeah, I I got a couple of things about this, too. I know that it says it's $20,000. There's just no way, like, full, one, they're trying to get rid of the federal tax incentive. So by the time this actually comes out, that'll probably be gone.

• 19:19Speaker 01

Twenty seven, so it'll be 27,000 without the incentive.

• 19:22David Imel?

  Yeah, right, 27,000.

• 19:23Speaker 05

You could get a Ford Maverick brand new right now for like 24.

• 19:26David Imel?

  Yeah, but is it electric?

• 19:27Speaker 04

  It's a hybrid.

• 19:28David Imel?

Oh, well. Also, like, the whole point is that it's a blank slate that you can add on things on to. And so they're selling you this dream of modularity. But again, they are not saying how much any of those pieces cost. So it's getting all these headlines because it's like, oh, $20,000 modular truck. By the time you actually kid it out the way you want it to be, it's probably gonna be over 40K. Like, I'm thinking.

• 19:52Speaker 01

You know, I mean, there's a reason they're not telling you the price of the modules right now.

• 19:54David Imel?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 19:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 19:56David Imel?

And then, last thing, I just wanted to know, it's, it is interesting that they are doing it this way because I was reading about this and apparently different parts of the process of making a car are are expensive in different ways. And one of them is like, painting is apparently an incredibly expensive part of the process. And so, you know, you would look at car modifications, like when you're buying a car and it's like $2,000 for paint. What the heck? Apparently, it costs a lot of money to paint cars. So not even painting these cars and then just giving you like the bare bones, like injection, like, plastic instead of having metal everything. So, yeah, I mean, I think it has promise and I think there's a high probability that they will actually ship this thing, which is not something I have, I think I've said

• 20:40David Imel?

about almost every, any electric startup before.

• 20:43Speaker 01

Tell me why you think that, because I've, I've done a good amount of digging now and I've read about this company and about the fact that they have a factory building that they've acquired that they're going to tool up. And apparently it doesn't need as much tooling to do the plastic as the metal. But you, you really are convinced, I mean, they're saying winter 2026, which to me is soon. To me, first of all.

• 21:05David Imel?

  Okay.

• 21:06Speaker 01

Slate is an anagram for Tesla.

• 21:08David Imel?

  I know.

• 21:08Speaker 01

And I just need everyone who's been. Making fun of the Tesla Roadster not coming out for seven years.

• 21:14David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 21:15Speaker 01

And then it's suddenly on board for the Slate. I need you all to realize the irony of that, please. I need you all to understand that they're the same thing.

• 21:22David Imel?

Yeah. Well, the same thing, but.

• 21:25Andrew Manganelli?

One's a company that definitely could have put that out already, but they just keep.

• 21:28Speaker 01

  Matter of fact.

• 21:29Andrew Manganelli?

  Your money fifty thousand dollars.

• 21:30Speaker 01

Yeah. Yeah, Tesla had a history up until that point of actually delivering what they said they would as far as hardware. Uh, Slate doesn't. And so to me, they are currently in the same exact category as canoe, as. Fisker doesn't really count, but.

• 21:48Andrew Manganelli?

No, I would like. Compare canoe perfectly.

• 21:49Speaker 01

Future, like the companies that never got there. And I would say that, you know, we, we want to believe in them, but the Tesla anagram is so funny to me because it's like, okay, this is. It's a slate. It's a new slate or whatever, but it's the same letters as Tesla.

• 22:02David Imel?

Yeah, that's funny. It is very funny.

• 22:05Speaker 01

But yes, uh, I, I'm rooting for it because I think they have a chance at actually shipping this, but I'm curious. How confident we can actually be in that.

• 22:13Speaker 04

Guys, what if I told you? There's a car on the market right now that is just. It doesn't have quite as low a baseline, but it's just about as configurable and customizable and modular as the Slate truck. It has an extra five, excuse me, it has an extra forty five inches of space in the back. It can have as many seats and two extra seats added as part of its modularity. And it can tow sixty nine hundred pounds with the right engine option.

• 22:48Andrew Manganelli?

  It's a bus.

• 22:49Speaker 04

No, because it's, it's, uh, it's only forty inches longer than the Slate truck.

• 22:55Andrew Manganelli?

  It's a small bus.

• 22:56Speaker 04

  Forty ish.

• 22:56Andrew Manganelli?

  Four feet longer.

• 22:57Speaker 04

  This car exists.

• 22:58David Imel?

Four feet is a, is pretty big.

• 23:00Speaker 04

It's a, you know, it's not compare, it's still smaller than an F one fifty.

• 23:04David Imel?

  What is this car?

• 23:05Speaker 04

It is the Ford Transit van, baby.

• 23:07David Imel?

  Oh, the Transit van.

• 23:09Speaker 04

  So.

• 23:09David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 23:09Speaker 04

It's not electric, but I think it says a lot that people are geeking about this truck. When if you really needed all of these things.

• 23:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 23:18Speaker 04

It's been on the market since the fifties.

• 23:19Andrew Manganelli?

I think, but it has a roof to it.

• 23:22David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 23:23Speaker 04

  What's wrong with that?

• 23:24Andrew Manganelli?

  It's.

• 23:24David Imel?

  You can't turn that into.

• 23:26Andrew Manganelli?

Vertical space that you don't get.

• 23:27Speaker 04

I, that's, I don't think that's the truth. Just because like, here's the thing, right? When you go to Europe. Where there are just as many plumbers, there are just as many carpenters and electricians. You never, ever, ever see a pickup truck on the road. Ever. Ever. Nowhere. And it's because that quote unquote, like, I think you could argue you'd actually get more vertical space.

• 23:52Andrew Manganelli?

I physically do not think you can argue that. It literally has no top and a top.

• 23:57Speaker 04

I know, but you can't, you can't just stick things infinitely up in the air.

• 24:00Andrew Manganelli?

  Not infinitely.

• 24:01Speaker 04

I know, but a lot of Ford Transit vans are almost tall enough that like you or I could pretty much stand, we could pretty much stand up straight at it, right? You're not going to get something six feet sticking out of a truck bed without it being really annoying to drive. Also, flex were six feet tall.

• 24:19David Imel?

If you say you're not really six feet.

• 24:21Speaker 04

But you know what I mean?

• 24:22Andrew Manganelli?

I think there's a, like, there's just like a, an, an aspect of freedom in that where there are things that happen in there that you couldn't fit in an enclosed space. And I know what a transit van is.

• 24:31Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 24:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 24:32David Imel?

Maybe an open trailer is better than both.

• 24:35Speaker 04

I, I think the, you know, the vertical space limitations of the van are vastly overrated. Cause you.

• 24:41Andrew Manganelli?

  I don't disagree.

• 24:42Speaker 04

Think about, think about like, think about what driving a truck with seven feet of pallets in the back would be like.

• 24:50Speaker 04

I'd so much rather have five feet of pallets with a roof over that and no air flowing through it.

• 24:55David Imel?

Yeah. I think that people just really like the idea of modular anything. And it is much easier to get funding when you can say, look at your freedom. You can do whatever you want.

• 25:06Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, yeah.

• 25:06David Imel?

You get to make the decision.

• 25:07Speaker 01

  Look at these pre-orders.

• 25:08Andrew Manganelli?

  I think there's also, and

• 25:11Andrew Manganelli?

in that sense, the separation from a truck bed and a transit van where you're all inside, like, I'm going to bring this up just because this is the best mock-up they have on this. It's mulch ado about nothing, a fake mulching company where having things in the bed of your truck like. Manure is better to have outside of your truck than inside of your car.

• 25:33Speaker 01

  Too shit.

• 25:33Andrew Manganelli?

I think, and I just want to say that because I think the way this succeeds is for smaller local companies that can buy a like absolute baseline of this truck, wrap it in their company logo and do things like handymaning with a ladder sticking out of the like handymaning, landscaping, small things like that that don't involve towing.

• 25:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:53Andrew Manganelli?

Do involve a bunch of, you know, crappy tools and stuff that you don't, that are dirty in the back of your truck.

• 25:59Speaker 04

If it's a really good platform, like, and it's a business expense, in theory, like, you'll save so much money on repairs that it actually makes a lot of sense. But I do feel strongly that if you're the kind of person who needs these things in a vehicle, that vehicle already exists and you probably already own it.

• 26:19Speaker 01

Yeah, I think the, the best case version of this, if it succeeds and they actually ship this thing in a year or two, however long it takes, is I think, one, it could be a little commuter for people, you know, 150 miles of range is not much, you're not going to do road trips with it, but I think you could use it as a small commuter, especially in, you know, going around New York City and like actually parking the thing and not having a huge truck.

• 26:41Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 26:42Speaker 01

And I think two, yeah, like the local business who needs to actually trans, uh, transit like a small amount of things. It's not going to tow five lawn mowers, like 10,000 pounds or whatever, but it can actually be a functional truck bed and you can be the, the imaginary.

• 26:59Andrew Manganelli?

Because again, like very few people actually take advantage of a giant truck.

• 27:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:04Andrew Manganelli?

Very few people. And, uh, as a counterpoint to your, your van thing, can you tailgate in the commuter van? I don't think so.

• 27:12Speaker 04

Bro, are you kidding me? You could put a disco ball in there?

• 27:15Andrew Manganelli?

  Actually, I'll be a stick.

• 27:17Speaker 04

Party in the back of your van.

• 27:18Andrew Manganelli?

I don't want it to be air conditioned. I want to feel the sun on my skin.

• 27:20Speaker 04

Yeah. Haven't you ever seen any, any, anything from the sixties with the VW vans? It's like a, they're, they're party machines.

• 27:29Andrew Manganelli?

Sure, fair enough. But I want to sit in the bed.

• 27:31Speaker 01

  Very important.

• 27:32Andrew Manganelli?

All right. I love how that was like 30 ish minutes on something that may or may not come out.

• 27:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:38Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. I think it's, I mean, it's super interesting. I think it's like really hard to not. Find this interesting in some sense?

• 27:45David Imel?

I'm just excited for people to get really mad when they announce the prices of everything.

• 27:50Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, yeah.

• 27:51Speaker 01

Yeah. Would you say it's closer to Project Aura in that it never ships, but has a lot of interest? Or closer to a Zenfone 9 or iPhone 12 Mini where it does come out, starts to ship, and then we discover exactly how small the demand actually is?

• 28:06David Imel?

  B.

• 28:07Andrew Manganelli?

Agreed with B because one thing we didn't mention is this is backed by Amazon, right?

• 28:11David Imel?

  It's backed by Bezos.

• 28:12Speaker 01

  Allegedly?

• 28:13Andrew Manganelli?

I don't know. It's got some money behind it, it seems like.

• 28:16David Imel?

I think it will release. I just think that it's not gonna be as like good or cool as people make it out to be. Also, this is one of those things where people are like, "Yeah, take out all the stuff. I don't need that in my car. I don't need that in my car." And then when you start driving around without a screen and without a stereo system.

• 28:34Andrew Manganelli?

  The light phone.

• 28:34Speaker 01

  All those windows up.

• 28:35David Imel?

Hey, I'm down for that, okay? That's the one exception.

• 28:38Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 28:39David Imel?

I gotta get those arms moving, you know what I mean? Yeah.

• 28:42Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, you gotta work it up so you can watch all those YouTube videos.

• 28:44David Imel?

  Exactly.

• 28:45Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 28:46Andrew Manganelli?

Like, I posted a video, by the way. Dude, it was so sick.

• 28:48David Imel?

You gotta crank in the car so you can crank it home, you know what I mean?

• 28:51Andrew Manganelli?

Okay. All right. I think that's our best way to move on to the next one. Zero segue. Did you see OnePlus backed off their price hike of the OnePlus Watch 3?

• 29:00Speaker 01

And they're refunding people who paid it.

• 29:02David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 29:02Speaker 01

So it would be a $500 watch, and then all the headlines came out and they were like, "Whoa, $500, what's going on?" And some amount of people did pay the $500, and then they decided, "Okay, we're actually gonna walk it back to be $349, up from $329." And so if you pay the $500, we'll give you your $151 back.

• 29:20David Imel?

Maybe some people paid the $500. I'm wondering if anyone did, right? Because it's possible they didn't sell any.

• 29:27Speaker 01

  Two or three people?

• 29:28David Imel?

  Maybe.

• 29:28Speaker 01

  Maybe.

• 29:29David Imel?

Yeah, but they moved it up by 20 bucks, so now it's $349. And they said that they figured out some supply chain adjustments so that they can keep the price where it is. And they said they are not going to raise the price anymore, which is interesting. So they're basically just saying, "Even if tariffs come for us, we will eat the cost." I think it's like a goodwill thing, like this was a pretty horrible move by them. And I think moving it back and then saying it will stay the same price now.

• 29:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 29:58David Imel?

It's just a move from them to not get people really angry at them.

• 30:01Speaker 01

Refunding people is a classy move, too.

• 30:02David Imel?

Yeah. I mean, definitely. Yeah, absolutely.

• 30:06Andrew Manganelli?

  Good job, Unplus.

• 30:07David Imel?

  So that was funny.

• 30:07Speaker 01

  Speaking of tariffs and prices.

• 30:09David Imel?

  Okay.

• 30:10Speaker 01

This is a funny story because I saw this in the Slack when it first was like hitting the news, which was Amazon's going to start showing how much the tariffs are increasing the price of the things you buy. And my immediate reaction was, I thought I said like two weeks ago on the podcast, there's no way anyone does that. So this is really crazy. Amazon? This is really crazy. And now it turns out it doesn't seem like that was actually real, but it is still something that people started talking about, which was, what if they did?

• 30:40David Imel?

It might have been real. It's kind of hard to say.

• 30:43Andrew Manganelli?

From what I've seen, it seems like it was only ever for Amazon Hall, which is like specifically a Timu kind of like.

• 30:50David Imel?

That is according to Amazon representatives, yes.

• 30:52Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 30:53David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 30:53Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, I never saw what that was. And the reason it blew up is because someone asked in a press briefing, that's gonna do this. They said it was a hostile and political act and then all hell broke loose on all of it. It would make sense to do it on like Amazon Hall because that's like we've all seen Timo and Timu and stuff like that, where it's just like straight from China, super, super cheap. And like, that's obviously gonna get hit the hardest.

• 31:18David Imel?

Yeah. Yeah. They had apparently considered doing it with Amazon Hall. This is allegedly from the Amazon spokesperson, that they had had talks about maybe doing that for Amazon Hall, but it was never approved. And they were definitely not going to do it for regular Amazon.

• 31:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:33David Imel?

  According to Amazon.

• 31:34Speaker 01

I just, yeah, that that makes sense. You know, okay, a direct from China thing will like label things that are more expensive with tariffs. But I just can't see them ever doing it on main Amazon because that almost removes one of your levers to like changing prices. When people see tariffs go down, they'll go, okay, now the price should go down, right? And when tariffs go up, they'll understand the price goes up, but they'll want you to drop it down again once the tariffs go down.

• 31:56David Imel?

It would be nice. It's kind of like how the price of everything went up during COVID. And then a lot of companies just kept the prices high because they knew they could. So, you know.

• 32:04Speaker 01

Which is why they'll never show it.

• 32:06David Imel?

  Exactly.

• 32:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 32:07David Imel?

That's why the groceries are expensive.

• 32:08Speaker 01

That's why the eggs are a thousand dollars.

• 32:12David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 32:13Speaker 01

  Speaking of tariffs.

• 32:14David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 32:14Speaker 01

Oh, my God, there's so many. Okay, one more, one more story. This was, uh, it showed up in my inbox. There was a, I got an email from Bowers and Wilkins.

• 32:22David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 32:23Speaker 01

And you know, Bowers and Wilkins, they make like high-end audio products.

• 32:26David Imel?

  BMW.

• 32:26Speaker 01

They make speakers, they make headphones as well.

• 32:29David Imel?

  Yep.

• 32:29Speaker 01

Have you seen some of their headphones?

• 32:31David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 32:31Speaker 01

  For like five, six, $700?

• 32:32David Imel?

Yeah, the PI8 in your, PIX8 or whatever.

• 32:35Speaker 01

Really pricey. So they emailed me and they said, hey, Marquez, here's some information about these new headphones we're coming out with. They're called the PX7 S3. I said, oh, I've heard about the S2s. They're really expensive. I'll see what's new. I read through the email and they tell me everything that's new with them. And then they say, by the way, we are not announcing a price. And we aren't because of the uncertainty of the tariff situation. And so we're not going to be giving that information at this time.

• 33:02David Imel?

  Yikes.

• 33:02Speaker 01

Instead, we'll have a notify me button on the website. And as soon as we have them on sale, you'll get an email.

• 33:09David Imel?

  Yikes.

• 33:09Speaker 01

And that's the first time I've seen that happen.

• 33:12David Imel?

Probably a smart move, to be honest.

• 33:14Speaker 01

Well, yeah, I mean, when I think of Bowers and Wilkins and $700 headphones, I think that they've priced in quite a bit already. And I don't know that they're on like the thin, razor-thin margin of like, have we accounted for the tariffs or not?

• 33:28David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 33:29Speaker 01

But the tariffs have been that crazy, so maybe that is going to affect them. But, uh, yeah, that's the first time I've seen a product announced where they're straight up going, here's our new product, here's all the information about it, except for the price. We don't know, tariffs are going crazy.

• 33:42David Imel?

  What about the slate truck?

• 33:44Speaker 01

Well, they have a base price at least.

• 33:46David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 33:47Speaker 01

So, and then to round it out, Ellis, you had a tariff story you wanted to?

• 33:51Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 33:52Speaker 01

  Tariff corner.

• 33:53Speaker 04

Yeah. So I just bought this new camera and I needed an adapter for it. And so I bought the adapter on eBay and was not paying very good attention and didn't realize that I bought the adapter from China. Um, and, uh, on May 2nd, it is currently, uh, April 30th.

• 34:12David Imel?

  At the time of recording.

• 34:13Speaker 04

  On May 2nd.

• 34:14David Imel?

  Friday.

• 34:15Speaker 04

  At 12, yeah, 12:01 a.m.

• 34:17David Imel?

  While you're listening to this.

• 34:18Speaker 04

Friday, yeah. Diminimus, supposedly, I don't know if I even understand what's going on to be totally, it was so confusing, but it seems like diminimus exemptions are going away. Uh, which means. The $8 adapter I ordered will be subject to a $100 postal fee, followed by 141% tariff.

• 34:45David Imel?

So it'll be like a hundred.

• 34:46Andrew Manganelli?

  I think that's changing. Isn't it 54% now?

• 34:48David Imel?

  From China?

• 34:49Speaker 01

It's gonna be different every time we check.

• 34:53Andrew Manganelli?

You will be paying between 20 and 200% on that.

• 34:57Speaker 04

Well, I will definitely be paying a $100 postal fee. Assume, so the last I heard is Sunday at 3 a.m. China time, the international flight departed. That is the last tracking notification. No, no, I, so I believe it is in the continental United States. It's whenever it goes through customs.

• 35:17David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 35:17Speaker 04

So I have approximately 36 hours for this thing to go through customs. Otherwise, I will be paying.

• 35:29Speaker 04

You know, it's weird. I swear someone told me that China was gonna pay for these.

• 35:35Speaker 04

But, you know, I guess it'll be.

• 35:36Andrew Manganelli?

Just keep your receipts. Expense it.

• 35:40David Imel?

I'm picturing a guy has customs like scanning things at 11:59 like boop, boop, boop. And then it gets to Ellis's and it turns to 12 o'clock.

• 35:47Andrew Manganelli?

  He's like waiting.

• 35:48David Imel?

  Puts it back.

• 35:50Speaker 04

What's even so, it's like, God forbid, this like adapter has the wrong like flange distance or like there's something weird about it. Cause then even if I return it, I can't, I can't get the tariff money back.

• 36:00David Imel?

  Yeah, it's shredding just payment.

• 36:02Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 36:03David Imel?

  Until you open the package.

• 36:04Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah, exactly.

• 36:05David Imel?

  You're paying $8 or you're paying $128?

• 36:08Speaker 04

  So, uh, yeah.

• 36:09Speaker 01

Well, that's, that's the world we live in right now. All right. Well, speaking of the world we live in, we also live in a world where right before our ad break, we do trivia.

• 36:19David Imel?

  That's a great, that's.

• 36:20Andrew Manganelli?

We also live in a world where sometimes we ask people to subscribe earlier.

• 36:24Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 36:24Andrew Manganelli?

But we didn't. But now at least there has been 40 minutes of rambling that you can decide if you ever want to listen to again or block us entirely.

• 36:32Speaker 04

Also, I, I've, someone's gonna ask, I'm gonna get ahead of the game. This is a Nikon 1J5.

• 36:38David Imel?

I was gonna say you should tell people, yeah.

• 36:40Speaker 04

Nikon 1J5, and I got it because I wanted to shoot all of my 16mm film lenses on high megapixel camera.

• 36:49David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 36:49Speaker 04

So far, it seems pretty good. I took a really funny picture of Adam with a flash earlier. We'll put that.

• 36:55David Imel?

  In the show notes.

• 36:56Speaker 04

Yeah, no, right here. It's over my face. You're looking at it right now.

• 36:58David Imel?

  Very nice.

• 36:59Speaker 04

Guys, today's trivia question is a little bit experimental.

• 37:04David Imel?

  Ooh.

• 37:04Speaker 04

I don't know how it's gonna go. We're trying something new.

• 37:07David Imel?

  Okay.

• 37:07Speaker 04

Um, just like, actually, we tried something really experimental that came out on Wednesday. The bonus episode, your creator's favorite camera, which we should have mentioned. If you haven't listened to that, go listen to it. We tried something really different. There might be more like this in the future. There might not be more like this in the future, but if you like it, let us know.

• 37:29David Imel?

  And subscribe.

• 37:29Speaker 04

Because we're, we're really interested in maybe doing more stuff like that again. And if you, uh, who, who, who all was in that episode? We got Casey Neistat in that episode.

• 37:39David Imel?

  Becca.

• 37:39Speaker 04

  Becca Versace.

• 37:40David Imel?

Brandon, Wiley, from, from used to be LTT.

• 37:44Speaker 04

Uh, we got, um, yeah, we, we got a lot of really, really.

• 37:49David Imel?

  Marques Brownlee. Marques Brownlee.

• 37:50Speaker 01

Whoa, yeah, he was in it too, yeah.

• 37:52Speaker 04

  Experimental trivia question.

• 37:53David Imel?

  Number one.

• 37:54Speaker 04

According to Wikipedia, slate is a fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous, metamorphic rock.

• 38:00David Imel?

  Mm-hmm.

• 38:01Speaker 04

But I also found through my searching that there are 10 million things called slate.

• 38:07David Imel?

  10 million?

• 38:08Speaker 04

10 million. And so over the course of this episode, slash, whenever, you know, we do this music, I would like you guys to write on your whiteboards, every single thing you could think of that is called slate. I will accept places. I will accept concepts. I will accept historical events. I will accept products.

• 38:28David Imel?

  Phrases.

• 38:30Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, so we do need that marker sooner than we thought?

• 38:32Speaker 01

So we should just be writing over the course of this episode as the slate names hit us?

• 38:36Speaker 04

  Exactly.

• 38:37Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 38:37Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, so not the official name of it, just be called Slate.

• 38:41Speaker 04

Yeah, be like, like, like Slate. I'll give you an example.

• 38:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 38:45Andrew Manganelli?

Don't you? No, no, no, what if that's the only thing I've thought of so far?

• 38:48Speaker 04

If you, if you know this one, I will be just shocked.

• 38:51Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 38:52Speaker 04

There is a city in Kansas called Slate, Kansas.

• 38:56Speaker 01

  That was yours?

• 38:56Speaker 04

Oh, you were born there. I forgot. Um, so yeah, stuff like that.

• 39:00Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay, cool.

• 39:01Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 39:01Speaker 01

  So. One point per answer.

• 39:03Speaker 04

One point per an- uh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Whoever writes down the most.

• 39:08Speaker 01

  Oh, my.

• 39:08Speaker 04

  Gets.

• 39:09Speaker 01

What in the world is this?

• 39:11Speaker 04

Okay. Like I said, experimental, this question might fall flat on its face.

• 39:14Speaker 01

  Fair enough.

• 39:14Speaker 04

But there are so many things called Slate.

• 39:17Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 39:18Speaker 04

  So many.

• 39:18Andrew Manganelli?

What if you get all 10 million?

• 39:21Speaker 01

Then you get a bonus point.

• 39:22Speaker 04

  Yeah, they get one point.

• 39:23Speaker 01

  You get one point.

• 39:25Speaker 04

And if two of you get all 10 million, no one gets the point.

• 39:29Speaker 01

Bet. All right. Well, we'll think about this. We will be writing all episode long. See if you can catch us. And answers will be at the end like usual. We'll be right back.

• 41:34Speaker 01

All right, welcome back. It is time to talk about the budget phone company's budget sub-brands Pro Phone.

• 41:42David Imel?

  That's right.

• 41:43Speaker 01

And it's called the CMF Phone 2 Pro. Not that there is a Phone 2. This is something Nothing and CMF have a really hard time with, is naming products in a way that's understandable for everyone.

• 41:54David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 41:54Speaker 01

  There's a 3A Pro, but there isn't a 3 Pro.

• 41:57David Imel?

You know what the problem with the 3A Pro is? Okay, it's a budget brand's budget phone.

• 42:05Speaker 01

  A Series.

• 42:06David Imel?

Pro budget. It's the budget brand's pro-budget phone.

• 42:08Speaker 01

And so now there's the budget phones.

• 42:09David Imel?

Because the A Series is the budget one.

• 42:11Speaker 01

Yeah, it's supposed to be. So now there's the budget phone Nothing, which has a sub-brand called CMF, which has a phone, and this is the Phone 2, but it's the Phone 2 Pro instead of the Phone 2. So there is no Phone 2, it's the Phone 2 Pro. Sub-brand, sub-brand, Pro Phone.

• 42:26David Imel?

  This hurts me.

• 42:27Speaker 01

Anyway, this is it. It's actually really good. And that's the crazy part about it is, I'm reviewing this one right now. It may be out by the time this pod is out, maybe not, but spoiler alert, I really like it.

• 42:38David Imel?

  It's pretty.

• 42:39Speaker 01

Now, the Phone 1, the Nothing, the CMF Phone 1.

• 42:44David Imel?

  Not the Nothing Phone 1.

• 42:45Speaker 01

Right, the Nothing, the CMF Phone 1, when it came out, had a lot of interesting things going for it. It had this modular, fun, interesting design. Not the best specs in the world, but it was kind of cool that you could take the back off and replace it with another back. Those modules don't all still work with this phone. The language still does, because they use the little thumb screw design at the bottom corner. But the rest don't. But instead, what they've done here is they've changed the system to a sort of accessory back, which is this thing right here.

• 43:16Speaker 01

Which has two really cool things about it. One is it has a mounting point for camera lenses that will go over the top of the primary sensor.

• 43:27David Imel?

  Cool.

• 43:27Speaker 01

And two, you see this magnet right here in the shape of the MagSafe magnet?

• 43:30David Imel?

  How does that work?

• 43:31Speaker 01

It is the strongest MagSafe magnet I have ever felt. Ever. I've attached this to the, to like random other various MagSafe accessories. Wireless chargers. The phone doesn't even wireless charge, by the way. I'll just pop it on wireless charger just to attach it. And it is so strong. So this back is really cool. You take the screws off the back of the Phone 2 Pro. You pop the white back on, you put the screws back on, tap the thumb screw back in. And then you can pop any one of, well, there's currently two lenses that they've made. CMF made a macro lens and a fisheye lens.

• 44:04David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 44:06Speaker 01

So the concept is now here. I was looking back at the last phone. Some people made some third-party accessories for the first CMF phone.

• 44:14David Imel?

They didn't make any new ones after they launched it.

• 44:16Speaker 01

  CMF didn't.

• 44:16David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 44:17Speaker 01

Yeah, there was a couple cool backs that people made. So I'm curious if that's going to happen again with this, if we might see some other phone lenses people make for it. It kind of depends on how well the phone itself does. But in general, it's a roughly $279 phone.

• 44:31David Imel?

  That's pretty good.

• 44:32Speaker 01

Yeah, that is, it's a 5,000 milliampere battery. It's a 3000 nit 1080p 120 Hz display. It's AMOLED. It's got 33 watt charging. It's 128 gigs of storage. It's very responsive. The software is great. It's got all the same features as a nothing phone. It still has the essential space too with that extra button. Triple cameras is like, I think the reason they're calling it Pro.

• 44:53David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 44:54Speaker 01

But it is just a 1X, a 2X, and an ultra wide. The 2X, let me be honest, I don't really find it that useful. It's a dramatically worse sensor than the primary and it's only 2X. And the ultra wide is also a tiny sensor and it's 8 megapixels. But if you want to shoot ultra wides, at least you have one. But yeah, it's just a really all-around solid phone to use. Nice, big display with very small bezels. I think in general, I find it a great value for money.

• 45:23David Imel?

What is the point of these notches?

• 45:25Speaker 01

  Those screws.

• 45:26David Imel?

  The screws here.

• 45:26Speaker 01

Those screws are simply there to hold the new back on. So you, they sit there all the time. Yeah, you can take those screws off.

• 45:33David Imel?

This goes on top of the back.

• 45:34Speaker 01

And continue to use the display. But they add that white back goes on top of the existing back. You don't take the back off anymore.

• 45:41David Imel?

I have a couple of questions and complaints.

• 45:42Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 45:43David Imel?

One, why didn't they just put the magnet in the phone?

• 45:46Speaker 01

I've asked that about many phones in the past. It seems like I'm just going to leave that back on the phone all the time.

• 45:52David Imel?

That sucks because this color sucks.

• 45:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 45:55David Imel?

  White. This is beautiful.

• 45:56Andrew Manganelli?

But they're not other colors? I assume there were other colors.

• 45:58Speaker 01

There's an orange, there is a black, and then there's this light green.

• 46:01David Imel?

  But they're all matte, right?

• 46:02Speaker 01

Uh, yes. The orange is kind of like this half, half-tone.

• 46:07David Imel?

  Okay.

• 46:07Speaker 01

  Half matte, half glossy.

• 46:09David Imel?

Could maybe be interested in that. But I feel it's very pretty and it's kind of sad that you're just covering it up all the time. Like,

• 46:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:15David Imel?

I don't really see the point in having these mount screws because it's like, it already looks very nice. And then you have to just destroy the colorway, you know?

• 46:25Speaker 01

Maybe people will make other better-looking backs. Since it's just like a modular system.

• 46:31David Imel?

  That's true.

• 46:32Speaker 01

  Maybe CMF.

• 46:32David Imel?

But then if you did that, you wouldn't have the magnets.

• 46:34Speaker 01

Yeah, really, those magnets are good.

• 46:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 46:37Speaker 01

They hold up in the car dash super well, very strong.

• 46:41David Imel?

It'd work well on the slate auto truck.

• 46:43Speaker 01

  For sure.

• 46:44David Imel?

Yeah. Um, so tell me about the accessories that they made for this phone.

• 46:48Speaker 01

So there's a couple. There is one, uh, the lanyard is basically the same as the last one. So if you want to have your phone on a lanyard, which I learned from the comments of the last CMF review, that apparently in Japan, very common. Uh, there's also a wallet. Now, this was my beef with the Apple Wallet, you know, the MagSafe Wallet on the back of the iPhone? I said in the video when I first reviewed it, like, this is way too weak. I do not trust this. I put it in my pocket. It pops right off the back of the phone.

• 47:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 47:13Speaker 01

And I got heat for that. But I still stand by that. It's too weak to be a wallet that I trust. This one, they also did a wallet for it, and it is rock solid, and I actually would trust it. It holds like two or three cards, and then it also has a folding kickstand mechanism. So it's a wallet slash kickstand that magnetizes to the back. That's pretty cool. Um, I think that there's one more. I don't even remember what it is, but that's kind of it. It's just the lenses they've made for the cameras, the other accessories. So.

• 47:42David Imel?

  Okay.

• 47:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:43David Imel?

Yeah, I'm, it's kind of sad that most of the other accessories from the phone, the CMF Phone 1 do not work on this.

• 47:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:50David Imel?

Uh, that sort of highlights the, the pain points of modularity and like modular systems. This always happens. Companies come out and they're like, look at this. We're gonna have this awesome ecosystem. It's gonna be so cool. But has it been like eight to 10 months since the CMF Phone 1 came out?

• 48:06Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 48:06David Imel?

And it's already, it's already replaced and you can't do anything with the accessories? Like,

• 48:11Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 48:11David Imel?

That kind of sucks. Kinda sucks. I was kinda thinking they were gonna make that, the screw in the bottom like the main point that everything would attach to so that it could truly be like, go across generations.

• 48:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 48:22David Imel?

But now they're not doing that, so.

• 48:24Speaker 01

Yeah, I think it looks pretty solid.

• 48:25David Imel?

  Interesting.

• 48:26Andrew Manganelli?

So I think it looks great.

• 48:27David Imel?

  The price is very good.

• 48:28Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 48:29David Imel?

  For what you're getting.

• 48:29Speaker 01

So the last CMF phone was like 200 bucks roughly. It was great. It was plastic. Oh, there's a couple of things that they improved though from that CMF phone that I think they heard from people that like kinda make it worth upgrading. Like the first CMF phone had no NFC. This one, the first thing I noticed is it asked me if I wanted to add my card for payment and I was like, oh, they added NFC to this phone. So you can do mobile payments and all the things that come with like mass transit, mobile stuff.

• 48:54David Imel?

  They added that?

• 48:55Speaker 01

It's NFC in this phone, which is great.

• 48:57David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 48:57Speaker 01

Um, they still don't have wireless charging, but I'm just happy it has an ultra wide at all. So that's awesome. It's only the bottom. Only the bottom camera.

• 49:06David Imel?

  Oh.

• 49:07Speaker 01

So the primary camera, if you add one of these add-on lenses, it only goes over the primary camera. And it just pops right in. Doesn't even have a thread, just like push in to add the camera.

• 49:16David Imel?

  Okay, got it.

• 49:17Speaker 01

  And then, yep.

• 49:18Andrew Manganelli?

  I think that's potentially a

• 49:20David Imel?

  I don't know, it doesn't feel.

• 49:21Andrew Manganelli?

I know you can use the outside parts of it, but I feel like a pushing in means you're probably smudging the lens every time, which you can wipe it off quick, but I feel like a thread would be nice.

• 49:32David Imel?

How much does the, these, do these lenses cost?

• 49:35Speaker 01

I don't know. Uh, one thing that annoyed me about the, two, three things that annoyed me about the lenses. One, I don't know how much they cost. Two, they do smudge very easily and are not easy to clean. And three, they don't come with a case of any kind, so they're kinda just loose in your pocket or something. Like you have to figure out a way to carry them with you. Cause you're not gonna just leave it on the phone all the time.

• 49:58David Imel?

That's awkward. Yeah, cause this would not slide into your pocket very easily.

• 50:01Speaker 01

It wouldn't. And you also don't wanna take all your pictures in fisheye.

• 50:04David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 50:05Speaker 01

Yeah, it is hard to carry.

• 50:07Andrew Manganelli?

  This isn't Thrasher magazine?

• 50:10Speaker 01

No, I don't know what that is.

• 50:11Andrew Manganelli?

It's an old skateboarding, old skateboarding and fisheyes go together like

• 50:16Speaker 01

  It does.

• 50:16Andrew Manganelli?

  spaghetti and meatball.

• 50:17Speaker 01

  I just

• 50:18Andrew Manganelli?

  lamb and tuna fish.

• 50:19Speaker 01

It kinda feels like they could have allowed you to do all of these things without the cover. Like if they had put the, if they had put the magnet in it, inside of it, if they had just added, uh, I don't know, they could have made the lens a little bit thicker or something.

• 50:33David Imel?

I'm very curious about the person who is actually interested in buying the fisheye and/or macro because people famously do not care about macro lenses at all.

• 50:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 50:43David Imel?

That's the cheap part that companies throw in the phones when they want to add a third camera. They're always like, and a 2 megapixel macro lens.

• 50:49Speaker 01

For sure. The first thing I pictured was the person who buys a moment lens for their iPhone.

• 50:54David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 50:54Speaker 01

And obviously that's a much higher end system, like an iPhone camera plus a moment lens is going to be different from the CMF, you know, macro and whatever's going on here.

• 51:02David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 51:03Speaker 01

Which is actually a line in my video, which is, I don't know if it's right to ponder a high-end version of this because maybe we've already seen it. You remember the Moto Z?

• 51:15David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 51:15Speaker 01

And the Hasselblad mod on the back of that thing?

• 51:17David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 51:18Speaker 01

It's like, we've tried this before and it doesn't really sell.

• 51:20David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 51:21Speaker 01

But it is still cool that it's a thing you could do. And if you ever want to spend the, however cheap it is, and have some fun with a macro or a fisheye, you could do it.

• 51:30David Imel?

What about the Xiaomi phone with the, uh, the telephoto adapter thing on it?

• 51:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 51:35David Imel?

  That was also a thing.

• 51:36Speaker 01

Or the Vivo, was it Vivo that had the glass? Yeah, the glass, uh, thing we could attach to it.

• 51:40David Imel?

You know, there's higher end phones that have a fisheye and a macro built into the phone.

• 51:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 51:44David Imel?

And they have the magnets, not necessarily in the phone, but that's something we would like to see more of them do. So, yes, I agree. It would be nice if it was in the phone.

• 51:52Andrew Manganelli?

I have some prices that I found on a Nothing4post.

• 51:56David Imel?

  Okay.

• 51:56Andrew Manganelli?

Uh, universal cover, uh, 25 euros.

• 51:59David Imel?

  Which is this?

• 52:00Andrew Manganelli?

  Yep. Yes.

• 52:01David Imel?

  25 dollars for this?

• 52:03Andrew Manganelli?

  Euros, but yes.

• 52:05Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 52:05Andrew Manganelli?

It's interchangeable lenses. So I'm confused. It says interchangeable lenses is fisheye and macro.

• 52:11David Imel?

  So you get both?

• 52:11Andrew Manganelli?

  I think this is both.

• 52:13David Imel?

  40 bucks? 40 euros?

• 52:15Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, are you looking at my screen or?

• 52:17David Imel?

  No, not, not, not. 100?

• 52:18Andrew Manganelli?

  No. 35. Very good guess.

• 52:21David Imel?

  Okay.

• 52:21Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 52:22Andrew Manganelli?

Wallet stand. Do you want to guess or do you want me to just?

• 52:24David Imel?

I think they might upcharge a little more and go... I think they might, I think they might go 40 just for that.

• 52:31Andrew Manganelli?

  35.

• 52:32David Imel?

  Okay.

• 52:32Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 52:32Andrew Manganelli?

So there's a bundle, there's two bundles. One is the cover and the wallet or lenses.

• 52:40Speaker 01

  Forty-five.

• 52:43Andrew Manganelli?

  Forty-five.

• 52:44Speaker 01

  Forty-five.

• 52:45Andrew Manganelli?

And then there's a bundle too, which is the cover, wallet, and lenses.

• 52:49Speaker 01

  All everything.

• 52:49David Imel?

  Sixty.

• 52:50Speaker 01

  Uh, fifty-five.

• 52:52Andrew Manganelli?

  Sixty-five.

• 52:53Speaker 01

  Dang.

• 52:54Andrew Manganelli?

Those are like, I feel like a bundle of a cover, wallet, and all the, like, basically everything.

• 52:59Speaker 01

  Everything.

• 52:59Andrew Manganelli?

Sixty-five euros doesn't sound that bad, but just the cover at twenty-five feels.

• 53:04Speaker 01

Yeah, you're not gonna just get the cover. I mean, you could just get the cover just to stick it on magnets.

• 53:08David Imel?

Or if you want the different colors of the cover.

• 53:10Andrew Manganelli?

  True.

• 53:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:11David Imel?

Yeah, it's an interesting strategy to be like, we're making a quote-unquote modular phone, but we're charging.

• 53:16Andrew Manganelli?

  It's the slate.

• 53:17David Imel?

  Money.

• 53:18Speaker 01

  It's the slate truck.

• 53:19Andrew Manganelli?

  It's the slate truck.

• 53:20David Imel?

Charging a ton of money for all the, for all the components.

• 53:23Speaker 01

That's funny. So this is, this is another slate.

• 53:26David Imel?

I don't know. It seems like a pretty good phone on its own. I'm really glad that they brought back, that they brought NFC to it.

• 53:31Speaker 01

No, it really is. So, I mean, I've used this phone for a couple of days now. It is all the same stuff as a nothing phone. And it's a hundred twenty hertz and it's responsive and the display gets plenty bright and it's ten eighty P. And I feel like when I use this phone, it's very easy to think it's a four hundred fifty dollar phone.

• 53:45David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 53:45Speaker 01

And it's not. So that's, that's the good thing about it.

• 53:47David Imel?

  Okay.

• 53:48Speaker 01

So, yeah, shout out to the CMF Phone Two Pro.

• 53:52David Imel?

Speaking of companies that used to be OnePlus, OnePlus.

• 53:57Andrew Manganelli?

I used to, still am, but I used to too.

• 54:00Speaker 01

I used to as well. Hey!

• 54:02David Imel?

  Uh, OnePlus.

• 54:03Speaker 01

  Good reference.

• 54:03David Imel?

Well, OnePlus has announced the OnePlus thirteen S. Which, uh, is supposed to be their slim phone.

• 54:11Speaker 01

Is it slim or is it small?

• 54:13David Imel?

  That's a good question.

• 54:14Speaker 01

Because I see the, the headline is powered up, sized down. And so to me, S means small. Introducing the OnePlus thirteen S, a powerful blend of performance and proportion, our first ever compact flagship.

• 54:27David Imel?

But does that mean slim or does that mean small?

• 54:29Speaker 01

  I think it means small.

• 54:31Andrew Manganelli?

The picture is the perfect way to create this debate because it's two phones at a forty-five degree angle with everything from the bottom cut down. I'd argue that those buttons look like there's the same amount of buffer as a usual side rail, which makes me think it's approximately the same size.

• 54:48Speaker 01

Yeah. So, yeah, a big phone these days is like six point six to six point nine.

• 54:53David Imel?

It says it's compact and also this photo makes it seem way smaller than I'm pretty sure it is.

• 54:58Speaker 01

Yeah, it's small. They're trying to make it look small.

• 55:00David Imel?

Yeah, six point three two does not seem that small. How big is the?

• 55:02Andrew Manganelli?

  It's not small at all.

• 55:03David Imel?

How big is the iPhone Pro?

• 55:05Speaker 01

6.2... Oh, the Pro? Oh, yeah, 6.2, right? iPhone 16 Pro, screen size 6.3.

• 55:14David Imel?

  So it's the same?

• 55:15Speaker 01

Yeah, because they shrunk the bezel 6.27.

• 55:17Andrew Manganelli?

So it's gotta be slim then?

• 55:18David Imel?

And they're calling this compact. Maybe it's not slim. Okay, because I had a whole rant ready for this, if it was slim.

• 55:26Speaker 06

  Let's hear it anyway.

• 55:27Speaker 01

Well, what if it came out?

• 55:28David Imel?

Why don't we rant the two possibilities?

• 55:30Speaker 01

Yeah, do the rant anyway. I want to hear it.

• 55:31David Imel?

Okay, I'm gonna do a rant for two possibilities.

• 55:33Speaker 01

All right, this is world number one where 13S means slim.

• 55:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 55:36Speaker 01

  There you go.

• 55:37David Imel?

Okay. All these companies, Samsung, OnePlus, allegedly.

• 55:43Speaker 01

  Apple?

• 55:43David Imel?

Potentially. Well, no. Are trying to release the slim phone because they know that Apple is making the slim phone.

• 55:49Speaker 01

  Right.

• 55:50David Imel?

But nobody actually knows if the slim phone is the thing that people want, or that it'll be a hit from Apple. Remember when the iPhone 13 came out and they made it thicker? And everyone... Or was it 11? It was either the 11 or the 13. I think it was the 11. When the iPhone 11 came out, they made it thicker with a bigger battery, and everyone was like, "Oh, my God, incredible, amazing, thank goodness, bigger battery, I'm glad it's thicker." Does any... Is anyone actually asking for a slimmer phone?

• 56:21Speaker 01

  No. Counterpoint.

• 56:22David Imel?

  I'm ready.

• 56:23Speaker 01

With silicon carbide batteries, Apple's going to be able to make a really big deal about this razor-thin phone that still has great battery life.

• 56:31David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 56:32Speaker 01

And I think they're forecasting Apple making a big deal out of it, and are trying to get ahead of that, so they can say they did the thing first.

• 56:38David Imel?

I agree with that. It's ironic that both Samsung and OnePlus just say "coming soon", and none of them have release dates for any of these things.

• 56:46Speaker 01

That's 25 Edge is just in limbo.

• 56:49David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 56:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:50David Imel?

  Nobody knows when that's coming.

• 56:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:52David Imel?

So, I don't know. I feel like it probably will sell... Like, the iPhone 17 Slim, I think it will sell well, just because it's a different-looking thing.

• 57:01Speaker 01

Yeah, I'm trying to figure that out.

• 57:03David Imel?

  But...

• 57:03Andrew Manganelli?

I think it's just a good... It's another product in the "air" category.

• 57:07David Imel?

  If they call it "air".

• 57:08Andrew Manganelli?

If they call it "air", it just fits really well. But I agree. I don't know if it serves much more of a purpose.

• 57:14David Imel?

And also... We've said this forever, but can we stop like making things smaller but keeping the same battery life when we come up with battery improvements?

• 57:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 57:24David Imel?

Can we just have really awesome battery life?

• 57:27Speaker 01

Please. Maybe that's what the Pro will be this year.

• 57:29David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 57:30Speaker 01

  I would love that.

• 57:30David Imel?

That'd be amazing. I don't, yeah. I kinda doubt they're gonna use the silicon carbide batteries with the Pros. I think they're only gonna use it in the Slim and then maybe next year they put it in the Pros. But I bet you it's a much more expensive technology to use, so.

• 57:45Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, I've seen it in a good amount of phones already this year, which is why I'm hopeful. Obviously Samsung skipped it with the S25 Ultra, but a whole bunch of, I mean, I guess this is what we've seen before, like Oppo phones, Vivo phones, silicon carbons, 6,000 million powers, 6,200 million powers in regular sized phones. Even we just had the Oppo Find X8 Ultra. So I wanna say it's available. Maybe not at Apple's scale, but it's out there.

• 58:12David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 58:12Speaker 01

  So.

• 58:12David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 58:13Speaker 01

  We'll see.

• 58:14David Imel?

Yeah. It is, oh right, it's silicon carbon, not silicon carbide, right?

• 58:17Speaker 01

  Right, right.

• 58:18David Imel?

Somebody yelled at us for that.

• 58:19Speaker 01

  Silicon carbon.

• 58:20David Imel?

Yeah, silicon carbon. Yeah, so they just have a notify me button where they just don't say when it's gonna come out or what the specs are besides the size. So, that's interesting. I kind of wonder if, I don't think it's gonna be a tariffs thing because I don't think this is being sold in the US. I think it's gonna, it's mostly for India, I believe. So.

• 58:41Andrew Manganelli?

What's the size of the OnePlus 13? Screen size? It is 6.82 inches. Okay, so I guess 6.4, you said?

• 58:52David Imel?

  6.2.

• 58:53Andrew Manganelli?

  2.

• 58:53David Imel?

  3.

• 58:54Andrew Manganelli?

  3. That is smaller than this, but to call it compact feels...

• 58:58David Imel?

  Feels like a stretch.

• 58:59Speaker 05

David, do you have a rant for if it's a small phone?

• 59:01David Imel?

Okay, if it's a small phone, nobody will buy it. End of my rant.

• 59:06Speaker 01

Which we already knew, but we still are cool with them making it.

• 59:09David Imel?

And it probably is a small phone.

• 59:10Speaker 01

We'll enjoy it. Yeah. Yeah, the Zenfone was a true small phone, 5.9. RIP to the OG.

• 59:16David Imel?

  We're never getting that back.

• 59:17Speaker 01

We're not getting that back, so.

• 59:18David Imel?

  So.

• 59:19Speaker 01

I guess 6.1 is like the compact now.

• 59:21David Imel?

Yeah. Last little thing before we take another trivia break. The Android show is a mini Google I/O just for Android that is coming next week. So.

• 59:30Speaker 05

  So this is I/O?

• 59:32David Imel?

Yeah, this is what we care about. I think that most of I O is gonna be Gemini oriented, just like the last two years.

• 59:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:38David Imel?

But, uh, yeah, on Tuesday, as of time of recording, Google is doing a little Android show I O thing, where they're just gonna talk about all the updates that are coming to Android, which I'm very excited about. So next week, we'll be talking about that on the show. So.

• 59:51Speaker 05

Is it a stretch to say that that's the only thing I care about?

• 59:56David Imel?

  Um.

• 59:57Speaker 05

Like, if I watch that, why would I watch?

• 59:59David Imel?

Well, imagine what if Google announces their Gemini glasses for sale at I O. What do you think?

• 1:00:05Speaker 01

Whoa. Well, the, uh, the, the same reason people love the Meta Ray-Bans is like the reason people would buy a Google Gemini version of that.

• 1:00:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:14Andrew Manganelli?

I think Ray-Bans have the camera also, and we don't know, do we know if?

• 1:00:17Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:00:18David Imel?

  I imagine they would.

• 1:00:20Speaker 01

We don't know necessarily, but I still think having Gemini available and having maybe some little text in front of you and having all the access to your phone that an Android thing could have has potential.

• 1:00:31Speaker 05

If done well, it will be cool, but I think the Ray-Bans are a success because it's a camera, not because it's A I. So if Google does.

• 1:00:40Andrew Manganelli?

  And it's Ray-Bans also?

• 1:00:41Speaker 05

And it's Ray-Ban, so it looks nice. So if Google does a thing and it, it's just, you know, Gemini, I, I don't know. I guess we'll see.

• 1:00:48Speaker 01

Can Google launch a camera on a face again?

• 1:00:49Speaker 05

Yeah, only one way to find out.

• 1:00:51David Imel?

  Gen two, baby.

• 1:00:53Andrew Manganelli?

That would be the best if it's not called Google Glass.

• 1:00:56David Imel?

I think it should call it Google Glass. Google Glass three is what they should call it.

• 1:00:59Speaker 01

Cause they already kinda had like a developer reboot.

• 1:01:02David Imel?

Yeah, they had to develop a reboot that lasted a little bit.

• 1:01:04Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:01:05David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:05Andrew Manganelli?

  New Google Glass.

• 1:01:06David Imel?

  New.

• 1:01:07Speaker 01

Cause it's new. Google Glass twenty twenty five.

• 1:01:09Andrew Manganelli?

  It's coming.

• 1:01:10David Imel?

  Nice.

• 1:01:10Andrew Manganelli?

  It's coming.

• 1:01:11David Imel?

Yeah, I mean, that's coming eventually, but we'll see if it comes at I O. Anyway, I'm gonna watch I O anyway, cause I'm gonna, yeah, I'm gonna go. It's gonna be fun.

• 1:01:18Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 1:01:18David Imel?

Yeah. All right. With that, I think we should, uh, do trivia gen two, although ironically, we're still writing slate names, so.

• 1:01:25Andrew Manganelli?

  Yes, slate.

• 1:01:26David Imel?

Can you hit the button? All right.

• 1:01:30Speaker 01

  Trivia.

• 1:01:32Speaker 05

  So.

• 1:01:33Speaker 01

  Can't hit the button.

• 1:01:35Speaker 05

The first OnePlus phone came out in 2014. Sticking to the spirit of Ellis's experiments, we are trying a new format with this trivia question as well.

• 1:01:44Speaker 01

  Oh, no.

• 1:01:44Speaker 05

So, fill in the blank. What other phones came out that year? The iPhone blank. The Samsung Galaxy Note.

• 1:01:53Speaker 01

  Oh, God.

• 1:01:54Speaker 05

  Blank.

• 1:01:55Speaker 01

  This is gonna be hard.

• 1:01:55Speaker 05

The LG G blank. And the Nexus blank.

• 1:02:01Andrew Manganelli?

I'm just gonna say you guys probably shouldn't write all of it down because you have to flip your board before.

• 1:02:06Speaker 05

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:02:07Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah. I'm just waiting till.

• 1:02:08David Imel?

Sorry, one more time, what are the four?

• 1:02:10Speaker 05

  The iPhone blank.

• 1:02:12David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:02:12Speaker 05

  The Samsung Galaxy Note blank.

• 1:02:15David Imel?

  Note.

• 1:02:15Speaker 05

The LG G blank. And the Nexus blank. Which phones came out the same year as the first OnePlus phone?

• 1:02:24Andrew Manganelli?

Oh. I'm toast. No point. More, should think of more slate words.

• 1:02:31Speaker 01

Definitely gonna, yeah. I'm gonna have to think about this one.

• 1:02:34Andrew Manganelli?

  The first OnePlus.

• 1:02:35Speaker 01

Is it like a sort of one point per correct answer type of thing?

• 1:02:38Speaker 05

I'm debating, I'll see when we get to the end, but it might be one point per correct answer or whoever gets the most correct gets the point. I don't know.

• 1:02:46Speaker 01

  Okay. Alright. That's interesting.

• 1:02:49Andrew Manganelli?

  I'll brainstorm.

• 1:02:50Speaker 01

Okay. And so will you, Reader. You will brainstorm as well.

• 1:02:53David Imel?

Reader? That's the only thing people are not doing with this pod.

• 1:02:57Speaker 05

  For the AI transcripts.

• 1:02:58David Imel?

  They're watching, they're listening, but I don't know if they're reading.

• 1:03:01Andrew Manganelli?

  Subtitles?

• 1:03:03David Imel?

  Consumer.

• 1:03:05David Imel?

  They're consuming the episode.

• 1:03:06Andrew Manganelli?

  Creator.

• 1:03:06David Imel?

  User.

• 1:03:07Andrew Manganelli?

  Creator.

• 1:03:08David Imel?

  Observer.

• 1:03:09Speaker 01

  So will you, user. Hey.

• 1:03:10David Imel?

  What are they using?

• 1:03:11Speaker 01

  We'll be right back.

• 1:03:26Speaker 01

Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. So AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from, but when that context is scattered across tools like threads and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying kind of blind. That's the problem Jira solves. What's the gold tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all of these pieces together from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot. Assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping. Learn more at jira.com.

If you used Google Shopping before, which you probably didn't, because not a lot of people did, you would be excited to know that OpenAI has just announced their own shopping experience with buy buttons and recommendations.

• 1:05:36Speaker 01

I actually, I actually did use, I have used Google Shopping a fair bit.

• 1:05:39David Imel?

Yeah, I was being a little mean.

• 1:05:41Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:05:41David Imel?

  Because people do-

• 1:05:42Speaker 01

  I think it's warranted.

• 1:05:43David Imel?

People do use it. It's just not-

• 1:05:46Speaker 01

It's when I want to buy something that I don't really care where I buy it from. I just want to sort of-

• 1:05:50David Imel?

Shop around prices and then figure it out. Like, I don't know exactly what I'm buying. I'm looking for a general item. And then I use Google Shopping to narrow it down.

• 1:05:58Andrew Manganelli?

My biggest gripe is when you type something in that's very obviously a product and it defaults to shopping, which then I just wanted to look at the images of it. And now it's changed all my other things and I click on them anyways.

• 1:06:09David Imel?

The experience for Google Shopping has never been fantastic.

• 1:06:11Andrew Manganelli?

  No.

• 1:06:12David Imel?

Now OpenAI is trying to integrate that into ChatGPT, which is interesting. I think that people are starting to use LLMs for many different use cases at this point. And OpenAI basically said that people were already searching for items through ChatGPT already, which is pretty interesting. Effectively, what this is supposed to do is it's supposed to give you product recommendations based on your preferences as well as reviews from around the internet. So the buying experience is going to show sources on the recommendations. So at least if you click on a recommendation, it'll be like, this is, this information comes from Wired. And then you can go to the Wired article or whatever. And probably the biggest thing of all is that none of the product, none of the products or recommendations have sponsored placements.

• 1:06:56David Imel?

And that is the big thing that Google has been yet.

• 1:07:00Andrew Manganelli?

  That we know of, yeah.

• 1:07:01David Imel?

That's the big thing that Google's been really pushing Google Shopping for, because they know that, oh, this is another market opportunity for us to put sponsored links in these areas, right? They pushed Google Shopping a couple of years ago and they just continued to push it because like this is a huge market, but no one wanted to use it.

• 1:07:19David Imel?

That is really interesting. I'm, I'm very curious how the system is going to decide exactly what kind of products to show you. It's supposed to be heavily based on your preferences and like the things you have asked ChatGPT before. Because now, as we talked about a couple of weeks ago, they opened up the context window to be infinite. So now you're basically talking to a system that just remembers everything you ever tell it.

• 1:07:42Andrew Manganelli?

  Which is super interesting.

• 1:07:43David Imel?

  Which is super interesting.

• 1:07:44Andrew Manganelli?

Have you done the thing where you ask ChatGPT?

• 1:07:47Speaker 01

Now that you know everything about me, tell me something that like I might not know about myself. Tell me a blind spot that I might have. Tell me a way that I can improve my life based on what I don't know. And it does.

• 1:08:00Speaker 05

That would send me down such a dark. I have not tried it yet.

• 1:08:03Speaker 01

  I have.

• 1:08:03Andrew Manganelli?

I don't use it enough. It would just say you have anger at me just because you get mad at me every time I try and do something.

• 1:08:07Speaker 01

I asked it to describe me. It was very, very accurate and I asked it for some like life advice. It was pretty good.

• 1:08:13David Imel?

Hmm. Did you just go and manually tell it like everything that you think you know about yourself?

• 1:08:19Speaker 01

No, I didn't tell it and I didn't do any new like information giving. I just, I saw that on Twitter and I was like, let me try it and it just did.

• 1:08:28Andrew Manganelli?

How often do you use ChatGPT?

• 1:08:30Speaker 01

  Every day.

• 1:08:30David Imel?

  More than Gemini?

• 1:08:32Speaker 01

Hmm. Yeah, yeah, a little bit.

• 1:08:34Andrew Manganelli?

My guest hasn't written a review in six months.

• 1:08:38Speaker 01

I'm not using it to write things, but I think I use Gemini and ChatGPT roughly the same amount, basically.

• 1:08:44David Imel?

  Interesting.

• 1:08:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:08:45David Imel?

Huh. Yeah, I think that the big question here is going to be, how does affiliate revenue work anymore? Because when you click on these links, they are, I was like, this has the opportunity to be another honey situation. Because OpenAI could, they could, they could say, we don't have sponsored segments, but we automatically generate affiliate revenue links to everything. And that's a huge market for them. But they said that none of the links are sponsored. They said that none of them have affiliate revenue on top. But when it's pulling the information from the websites that do have affiliate links, but then it's giving you links to the products directly without the affiliate links, uh, that kind of screws over like all of the publishers.

• 1:09:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:09:27David Imel?

  Which is pretty rough.

• 1:09:27Andrew Manganelli?

Do you think it would pull, like if it pulled a Wired article and then that had an affiliate link in there? Do you think you would see that link and then decide, oh, I'm gonna not feed that link. I'll feed it directly to the product?

• 1:09:39David Imel?

Yeah, I think it feeds you direct links and affiliate links, which is tough.

• 1:09:45Andrew Manganelli?

I also have no faith that this won't eventually turn into affiliate links because the minute I read this, I said, is just the end goal for everything on the internet to be an affiliate link aggregator?

• 1:09:55David Imel?

A hundred percent. That's like what most websites on the internet are.

• 1:09:59Speaker 05

Is the crab version of every website.

• 1:10:02David Imel?

Yeah. Affiliate link-ization. It's like harkenization.

• 1:10:06Speaker 01

  It's been happening. That's crazy.

• 1:10:07David Imel?

Yeah, I mean, they have the opportunity to be, to add the value of honey. On top of their existing product, which is a very big opportunity. They say they will evaluate the opportunity for affiliate links in the future.

• 1:10:21Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, they said that. They already said that.

• 1:10:23David Imel?

Sorry, I think I misspoke. They said they're going to explore later down the road how affiliate links are going to work.

• 1:10:31Andrew Manganelli?

  They're adding much.

• 1:10:32Speaker 01

We have concepts of a plan.

• 1:10:33David Imel?

Yeah, which to me tells me that they're just gonna generate their own.

• 1:10:37Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, for sure.

• 1:10:38David Imel?

Um, so that's, that's pretty crazy. Do you guys feel comfortable asking an LLM for product recommendations?

• 1:10:46Speaker 01

I'm not there yet. I actually, I'll take that back. Asking for product recommendations, yes, but not like fully trusting it and going to the purchase. I still will then go do my own research after to go to the purchase. But if I'm just starting from a baseline of what mulch should I buy? I live in this area of the world and I have these goals. I will start from there and then do my own research after.

• 1:11:09David Imel?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I think that that's kind of the case. It's like when you go to any website and you, you can be recommended a product, but you want to read the reviews to make sure that it's like, you know, positive.

• 1:11:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:11:21David Imel?

So, yeah, it also says that it's using Reddit as a source, which is pretty interesting because if it's actually scraping what people are recommending. And there's been so many reports of companies just basically going on Reddit and recommending their own products as if they're regular users. So I feel like there's a lot of.

• 1:11:38Andrew Manganelli?

I also don't know if I trust like an LLM to understand the nuances of how, what Reddit comments are. And like, what is just someone being an asshole?

• 1:11:47Speaker 01

  And sarcasm.

• 1:11:49David Imel?

  Right.

• 1:11:49Speaker 01

Yeah, I have a general philosophical question about LLMs.

• 1:11:53David Imel?

Here we go. An hour and thirty.

• 1:11:56Speaker 01

  Are they conscious?

• 1:11:57Andrew Manganelli?

  This is like.

• 1:11:58David Imel?

  What is consciousness?

• 1:11:59Speaker 01

We have all, you know how there's a generation of people who grew up before smartphones? And then there's a generation of people who grew up never knowing what it's like before smartphones?

• 1:12:09David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:09Speaker 01

  What if?

• 1:12:10David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:11Speaker 01

The same thing is true about LLMs and hallucinations, where when we were starting to get into these AI tools, it was very, very early and they were notorious for getting things wrong all the time.

• 1:12:22David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:22Speaker 01

And so built into our conscience is an inherent skepticism for like, when I ask for these product recommendations, I'm gonna double fact check everything just because some of it might just be a lie. And then at some point, there's a generation of people who's going to come online and will never have had to think about if the LLMs lie to them or not.

• 1:12:41David Imel?

I think that there are already a significant amount of people who don't know what a hallucination is. I was watching some video on YouTube a couple of weeks ago. And someone was trying to make a point and he goes, and I know this is true. I looked it up on chat GPT. And he was not joking.

• 1:12:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:12:57Speaker 04

  Um, Grok contacts, please.

• 1:13:01David Imel?

Exactly. Yeah. I just, I think most people think this is basically a search engine that talks to you normally.

• 1:13:08Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's tough.

• 1:13:08David Imel?

  So I don't even think it's a generational thing. I just think it's like

• 1:13:12Speaker 01

  It's just already happening.

• 1:13:13David Imel?

  Most people.

• 1:13:13Speaker 01

People who were like early adopters got to see all the hallucinations and downsides, but now people who were not even paying attention then are just like, oh, okay. Yeah. I'll just use chat GPT to look it up.

• 1:13:20David Imel?

  Totally.

• 1:13:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:13:21David Imel?

People are worried about TikTok replacing Google. I think it's more of a concern that the LLMs are replacing Google, which is why Google was so terrified and had to get Gemini all kickstarted.

• 1:13:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:13:30David Imel?

So they made the right call there, I gotta say.

• 1:13:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:13:33Speaker 04

Researching this camera, I gave it a whack with LLMs, dude. Nothing useful, nothing useful. In fact, I would say it was like wrong 85% of the time. Like, does this camera have focus peeking? Absolutely. The focus peeking on this camera does not have focus peeking. Like, like every single question it could have gotten wrong about this, it got wrong.

• 1:13:55Speaker 01

Yeah, it was interesting. I was using a, an AI thing, asking it to make me a pop quiz about a product that I knew a lot about. And then I filled out the quiz because I knew all the answers and it got some of the corrections wrong. Like I'd said, the answer was the actual answer. And it was like, actually, this is the answer. And I was like, yeah, that's just wrong.

• 1:14:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:14Speaker 01

So it was like nine out of 10 right, but still, like, I still see that happening.

• 1:14:18David Imel?

  Right.

• 1:14:18Speaker 01

So it is something that I think about.

• 1:14:20David Imel?

Yeah, it's tough. It's tough. Speaking of AI and LLM model stuff. Meta just had its LamaCon, which really doesn't sound real.

• 1:14:31Andrew Manganelli?

  Sounds like a Fortnite thing.

• 1:14:32Speaker 01

  They really called that?

• 1:14:33David Imel?

It does sound like a Fortnite thing.

• 1:14:34Speaker 04

I also have a question about this.

• 1:14:35David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:14:35Speaker 04

What sound does a llama make?

• 1:14:40Speaker 01

  I've heard that before.

• 1:14:42David Imel?

  I think that's true.

• 1:14:43Speaker 01

Okay, um, so they have decided to release the Meta AI app, which is a dedicated app that is focused around voice, uh, voice interactions. Marquez is showing it right now.

• 1:14:55Speaker 05

Can I tell a story about this particular app?

• 1:14:58Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:14:59Speaker 05

I'm watching the live stream because it was yesterday, the day before. And, and they're like, oh yeah, you know, we released this meta app, the AI, blah, blah. And I turn, and I put it in the Slack and I'm like, okay, I gotta add this to the docs. We can like talk about it, whatever, blah, blah. And Marquez just turns around and is like, oh yeah, uh, by the way, Adam, I've had that for like two weeks now and I got like, I've had that for two weeks now in real life. He just turned around, was like, yeah, no, I've had that. I'm like, oh, shocker. Yeah, of course.

• 1:15:26Speaker 01

  So in case you're curious.

• 1:15:27David Imel?

  Yeah, tell me about it.

• 1:15:28Speaker 01

The Meta AI app, it's a hub. So now, so there used to just be, you'd have the glasses and you'd have the app for like Meta View or whatever it's called for the glasses.

• 1:15:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:37Speaker 01

And then you've got AI built into Instagram and AI Messenger. So this is like the hub for all of it. And so you can just like talk to it and ask it questions as if it's chat GPT or whatever Gemini. But there's also a discover feed where you can scroll through the image generated results of other people's prompts, kind of like Sora, remember? You could see other people's images and what it was generated from. And so if you've ever just wanted to scroll through AI slop for a while, this is the perfect place to do that.

• 1:16:08Speaker 05

This is what OpenAI said they were doing with their social media thing, right?

• 1:16:12David Imel?

Well, they didn't say specifically what they were doing with that. And they never, they never even confirmed they were making this.

• 1:16:16Speaker 05

  Oh, golly.

• 1:16:17David Imel?

Report. No, the social media app that OpenAI was reportedly working on.

• 1:16:21Speaker 01

It would look kind of like this.

• 1:16:22David Imel?

It would probably look like this.

• 1:16:24Speaker 01

And it's like, it has shares and comments and there's people going like, oh yeah, this is cool. This is tiny New York City in a sphere. And it has 171 likes, 12 comments.

• 1:16:36Speaker 05

Can you read the comments? I hope they're AI generated.

• 1:16:39Speaker 01

They are. Don't tell. The first three are people reimagining the prompt in with different results. Okay. And then you scroll down a little bit and it's people saying, wow, cool, love this, these are nice. You just know every time there's a new social media platform, the influencers jump on it and they're like, I gotta get on this because in case it blows up. And like, if you're getting on the meta AI social media platform to try to be an influence on there, you need to get some help.

• 1:17:06Speaker 05

  I'm right here, David.

• 1:17:09Speaker 01

  Yeah, I just, I, I, who, who, I don't.

• 1:17:13Speaker 05

  Yes, agreed.

• 1:17:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:17:15Speaker 05

I've never agreed with you more, David.

• 1:17:16Speaker 01

Thank you, thank you. It's just, it is, is a full on social network of AI generated. I think that Meta is banking on the fact that this is free. And like ChatGPT plus is $20 and Gemini Ultra 2.5 advanced with the research.

• 1:17:36Speaker 05

  Pro.

• 1:17:37Speaker 01

Pro is, uh, is $20. New, new, new, new. Have you noticed that? I also. If you go on Gemini, you have the model selector, every single model says new. And they have always all said new. I also have thoughts on that that are probably too long for this podcast because I was gonna ask like, how do you select what model you use? Like versus based on what your question is, do I go to perplexity? Do I go to deep seek? Do I go to a certain version of ChatGPT? Or a certain version of Gemini? Yeah. Do you guys even pay attention to that or?

• 1:18:06Speaker 05

That sounds like a great app. That's just like a six sided die, a virtual six sided die with all the different AIs on it and you roll it before you.

• 1:18:14Speaker 01

Yeah, the Raycast app for iOS just came out and it's like, you know what Raycast is on the Mac? Yeah. So you can like tab over and use AI chat and like pick between your models and the settings. This one is literally just pick your AI model and talk to it. And there's a selector and there's like 15 of them and you just jump in and you go, I like deep seek right now.

• 1:18:30Speaker 05

  I'm feeling lucky.

• 1:18:31Speaker 01

Right now. I guess, probably, but. They're all just compet- like. They're all competing and yes, some of them are better for code, some of them are better for specific things. And I get that there are advantages to them, but aren't we all working towards them all being amazing at as many things as possible? And nobody should have to know, like, oh, I'm supposed to use this one for code. The goal is like, I'm going to use a search engine and they're all gonna eventually get me there.

• 1:18:51Speaker 05

Well, even if you don't know, like, for example, Gemini has 2.5 flash experimental, which says used for advanced reasoning. And then it has 2.5 pro experimental, which is best for complex tasks.

• 1:19:05David Imel?

Both of those tell me nothing. Yeah. Like, yeah. If I'm trying to differentiate between them. There's also, I love that there's 2.5 Flash, 2.5 Pro Experimental. Deep Research with 2.5 Pro.

• 1:19:18Speaker 01

There's also GPT-4O, which is great for most tasks, but there's also GPT-4.5, which is good for writing and exploring ideas, which is also what I use it for. There's also O3, which uses advanced reasoning. So I guess I should use that. There's also O4 Mini, which is fastest at advanced reasoning. O4 Mini High.

• 1:19:41David Imel?

  What?

• 1:19:41Speaker 01

Great at coding and visual reasoning. Okay, so they're not going to combine them all, but like, well, I don't even know how to pick between.

• 1:19:48David Imel?

People should not, you should just talk to the thing and it knows what your prompt is and it picks the right model to do your prompt.

• 1:19:55Speaker 01

So the next AI is going to be an AI that decides which model you should use for the prompt you have.

• 1:20:00David Imel?

But what model does that AI use? That's where. Your 2.5 Pro Experimental. Experimental Flash with deep research. With Marques Research.

• 1:20:09Speaker 01

Advanced reasoning. I'm gonna start asking AI models which ones I should use. Uh, yeah, no, that's it. We'll, we'll continue to keep an eye on Meta's AI app.

• 1:20:18David Imel?

Will we? I don't think we will. I don't really think we will. I, I'm never. Marques has volunteered for the job.

• 1:20:24Speaker 01

It's on my phone. It's on my phone.

• 1:20:25David Imel?

  For now.

• 1:20:26Speaker 01

  Sorry.

• 1:20:26David Imel?

Yeah. I'm not looking at that social media network ever. Um, okay, last thing that is just fun and I want them and Ellis doesn't like that I want them. But I really want them. Okay, there's these new headphones by KM5. They kind of look like those COS headphones that are like really lightweight and really like small. And they very much look like something that like nothing would release, kind of.

• 1:20:51Speaker 01

  Teenage engineering.

• 1:20:52David Imel?

Or teenage engineering X nothing. But basically, if you know what the, like, the COS headphones are, there, there's like 80s style headphones that are, they're on ear, they're really small, they've just got a metal band that gets your hair stuck in it and pulls your hair out. Um, but they have all the advanced capabilities of like a newer pair of headphones. So they charge with USB-C. You can plug them in with USB-C. They've got, uh, good Bluetooth capabilities. They somehow have active noise cancellation, which I do not know how that works when they're on ear headphones.

• 1:21:22Speaker 01

  Spoiler alert, it doesn't.

• 1:21:23David Imel?

  Probably doesn't.

• 1:21:24Speaker 01

Um, they just seem really cool and they make this, this company also makes this uh CD player that looks freaking amazing.

• 1:21:31David Imel?

David, what is the price of these?

• 1:21:32Speaker 01

They're one hundred and eighty-nine dollars.

• 1:21:35David Imel?

Okay, it's not as bad as I thought.

• 1:21:37Speaker 01

Not that bad. And look how pretty they are.

• 1:21:39David Imel?

  They're just pretty.

• 1:21:40Speaker 01

They're pulling directly at the nostalgia heartstrings of a specific generation of people. Yeah, but they're USB-C.

• 1:21:48Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:49David Imel?

Remember those things? What if new and modern?

• 1:21:52Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, and I want it.

• 1:21:55Speaker 01

It's the Ford F-100, but electric.

• 1:21:57David Imel?

  I'm really-

• 1:21:58Speaker 01

It's the Volkswagen bus, but electric.

• 1:22:00David Imel?

I almost impulse bought these yesterday. They also came out on my birthday, so what are you gonna do? You know?

• 1:22:05Andrew Manganelli?

  Wait, wait.

• 1:22:08David Imel?

Thank you. I just blew myself a birthday.

• 1:22:10Speaker 01

I don't know that there's anything superior about these headphones, other than them being maybe lightweight.

• 1:22:16Speaker 01

But you know, good for them. Good for them. They look cool.

• 1:22:18David Imel?

I just wanted to mention these, because they're cool looking.

• 1:22:20Speaker 01

  Shout out to the KM5.

• 1:22:22David Imel?

Alright, well, I think that we should do trivia now.

• 1:22:26Speaker 01

It's about that time. Have you been brainstorming?

• 1:22:28David Imel?

  Uh, no.

• 1:22:31Speaker 04

  Andrew's brainstorming right now.

• 1:22:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay, I have a question.

• 1:22:33Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:22:34Andrew Manganelli?

Do you get a point off if we have something in there that's not?

• 1:22:38Speaker 04

I won't be added to your total slate count.

• 1:22:42Speaker 04

Uh, so I'm gonna give you guys ninety more seconds to share up these lists.

• 1:22:45Speaker 01

  Ten million?

• 1:22:46Andrew Manganelli?

It's like how specific do I have to be?

• 1:22:48Speaker 04

  That was hyperbole. There isn't-

• 1:22:49Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 1:22:51Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, cuz I heard that, I was just like, I could just guess this.

• 1:22:53David Imel?

I thought you actually meant ten million.

• 1:22:55Speaker 04

  Ten million, exactly.

• 1:22:56David Imel?

  Well.

• 1:22:57Andrew Manganelli?

Okay. I'm just gonna leave it where I'm at. I don't think I can-

• 1:23:00David Imel?

You know how when you get close enough to infinity, you just say infinity in math?

• 1:23:04Andrew Manganelli?

Close enough to infinity? I feel like in math, that would be the time where you don't do that.

• 1:23:08Speaker 04

In math, you'd say, we could say-

• 1:23:09Andrew Manganelli?

  I should not say that.

• 1:23:10Speaker 04

  As the limit approaches infinity-

• 1:23:12David Imel?

  The limit does not exist.

• 1:23:13Speaker 04

  Yeah, exactly, the asymptote.

• 1:23:15David Imel?

  Well, but it can't approach.

• 1:23:19Speaker 04

  Yes, it can.

• 1:23:19Speaker 01

  Marquez has a big list.

• 1:23:20Speaker 04

  It totally can.

• 1:23:22Speaker 01

If there's an asymptote, it's not approaching infinity. It's approaching the asymptote.

• 1:23:30Speaker 01

  Anyway.

• 1:23:31Speaker 05

  Oh, no, you're right.

• 1:23:32Speaker 01

  I failed out of math.

• 1:23:33Speaker 05

Uh, who wants to, who wants to slate first?

• 1:23:36Andrew Manganelli?

  Are we flipping them?

• 1:23:38Speaker 05

What, we don't have to, you could flip them.

• 1:23:39Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, you'll just read it? Okay, yeah, I guess I'll just read it.

• 1:23:42Speaker 05

  One at a time, okay.

• 1:23:43Speaker 01

I'll read my slates first. You said the slate truck doesn't count?

• 1:23:47Speaker 05

The slate truck does not count.

• 1:23:48Speaker 01

  All right, so scratch that.

• 1:23:49David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:49Speaker 01

  I have pixel slate.

• 1:23:51Speaker 04

  Awesome.

• 1:23:52David Imel?

  Oh.

• 1:23:52Speaker 01

  I have slate gray paint.

• 1:23:55Speaker 04

  Perfect.

• 1:23:55Speaker 01

And I have, I think, this is a made up one, I think.

• 1:23:59Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:24:00Andrew Manganelli?

I think there was a Google slate product.

• 1:24:02Speaker 05

Well, there was the pixel slate.

• 1:24:03David Imel?

  There was the pixel slate.

• 1:24:04Andrew Manganelli?

But was there like a whiteboard product or no?

• 1:24:06Speaker 05

  Uh.

• 1:24:06Andrew Manganelli?

This is, I think I'm imagining this one.

• 1:24:08David Imel?

  That was the Jamboard.

• 1:24:09Andrew Manganelli?

  That was Jamboard, yeah, okay.

• 1:24:11Speaker 05

There was a, and there was a Microsoft tablet called the Slate PC.

• 1:24:14Andrew Manganelli?

  That's not what I'm thinking.

• 1:24:15David Imel?

  Really?

• 1:24:16Andrew Manganelli?

I was, I was thinking of like Jamboard. Okay, so I got.

• 1:24:18Speaker 05

Not bad, not bad. All right, two.

• 1:24:20Andrew Manganelli?

All right, I have a production slate, like the thing we clap.

• 1:24:25Speaker 04

  Sweet.

• 1:24:26Speaker 05

Oh, that's a good one. Not bad, there you go.

• 1:24:28Andrew Manganelli?

  I have the pixel slate.

• 1:24:28Speaker 05

  There you go.

• 1:24:29Andrew Manganelli?

So you said slate paint? I said slate the color.

• 1:24:32Speaker 05

That works, I'll, I'll take it.

• 1:24:33Andrew Manganelli?

And then I have a guess, and I can help look it up, but I didn't want to look like I was cheating.

• 1:24:38Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:24:39Andrew Manganelli?

If there's a disc golf disc named the slate, because I know there's one named the slab, so I have to.

• 1:24:45David Imel?

So there might be a slate. If you don't know and you just start guessing, does that?

• 1:24:49Andrew Manganelli?

I, I'll, mm, it would have to be called the slate.

• 1:24:55Speaker 05

I see slate disc as an option, but it's zero disc.

• 1:24:59Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, I don't think there's one.

• 1:25:00Speaker 04

  Unfortunately.

• 1:25:01Andrew Manganelli?

This, that's a good name for a disc, just saying.

• 1:25:03David Imel?

Maybe you should start a company.

• 1:25:04Speaker 01

  Not taken. All right.

• 1:25:07Speaker 04

Trash Panda, Trash Panda does offer their discs in a slate color.

• 1:25:11Speaker 05

Trash, Trash Panda does, but I unfortunately.

• 1:25:14Andrew Manganelli?

  I already put slate colors.

• 1:25:16Speaker 05

That's three, all right, that's three. David, what do you have?

• 1:25:19David Imel?

  I have Slate Kansas.

• 1:25:22Speaker 05

Uh, no, no, no, I, I can't, no, no you don't.

• 1:25:26David Imel?

  Well played.

• 1:25:27Speaker 05

There are two other towns in the United States called Slate though, did you get any of them?

• 1:25:30David Imel?

Wait, so Kansas is not a real place?

• 1:25:31Speaker 05

No, Slate Kansas is real, but I can't give that to you because I said it out loud earlier.

• 1:25:34David Imel?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:25:37Speaker 05

  That's all you had?

• 1:25:37David Imel?

  Or Oregon? I don't know.

• 1:25:40Andrew Manganelli?

  Have to write it down.

• 1:25:41Speaker 05

Did you write, did you write down any other?

• 1:25:43David Imel?

  I wrote Slate the website.

• 1:25:45Speaker 05

  Awesome.

• 1:25:46David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:46Andrew Manganelli?

  We literally talked about that?

• 1:25:48Speaker 05

  Yeah, great.

• 1:25:49David Imel?

Um, I wrote Slate the color.

• 1:25:51Speaker 05

  Great.

• 1:25:52David Imel?

  I wrote Slate the car.

• 1:25:54Speaker 05

Uh, no, I can't accept that.

• 1:25:55David Imel?

  I know, I know, I know. I put, I put Tail Slate.

• 1:25:57Speaker 05

I will accept that as a production slate, yes.

• 1:25:59David Imel?

Uh, I put Blank Slate, the song by Taylor Swift.

• 1:26:03Andrew Manganelli?

Not a song by Taylor Swift.

• 1:26:04Speaker 05

I think you're thinking of Blank Spaces. Oh, is it singular? Circular? Okay, my bad.

• 1:26:08David Imel?

Oh, okay. Um, I put Slate the rock.

• 1:26:13Speaker 05

  Uh.

• 1:26:14Andrew Manganelli?

We talked about that. That was the opening example.

• 1:26:16Speaker 05

That was the, yeah, I can't give you that one either, unfortunately.

• 1:26:18David Imel?

  I put the bird.

• 1:26:20Speaker 05

  There's a bird called a slate?

• 1:26:21David Imel?

I don't know, but there probably is.

• 1:26:23Andrew Manganelli?

  Wait, you just, you're right.

• 1:26:25Speaker 05

I did do that to you. No, there's a slate colored bird. Yeah.

• 1:26:29David Imel?

Well, I also put Slate the color.

• 1:26:30Speaker 05

Yeah. But we already got that one.

• 1:26:32David Imel?

  Did we?

• 1:26:33Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:26:33David Imel?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:26:33Speaker 05

They already said that, right? Did he already say that?

• 1:26:35Andrew Manganelli?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:26:36David Imel?

Okay, and then I put S latte, like small latte.

• 1:26:44Andrew Manganelli?

  Wow.

• 1:26:44Speaker 05

I want to give you that for creativity, but I don't know.

• 1:26:47David Imel?

It is, but, yeah, you can't give him that.

• 1:26:49Speaker 05

  It's close.

• 1:26:50Andrew Manganelli?

  It is close.

• 1:26:52Speaker 05

Is that the title? Like, how do we break this?

• 1:26:54David Imel?

  Is there a slate bird?

• 1:26:55Andrew Manganelli?

We just both get a point.

• 1:26:57David Imel?

  Slate colored solitaire bird.

• 1:26:58Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, but that's the color.

• 1:26:59David Imel?

  Oh, you're right.

• 1:27:01David Imel?

  Solitaire bird?

• 1:27:02Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, I don't know what that is.

• 1:27:03Speaker 05

So, uh, pretty good, guys? We'll give the, the point to both Andrew and David.

• 1:27:08David Imel?

  Nice, nice.

• 1:27:09Speaker 05

Good. All right, quick update on the score. Marquez with eighteen. Andrew with ten after that correct point. And David with twenty-two after that correct point. Next question. So, the first OnePlus phone came out in 2014. What other phones came out that year? Fill in the blank edition. The iPhone, blank. The Samsung Galaxy Note, blank. The LGG, blank. And the Nexus, blank.

• 1:27:40David Imel?

  2014?

• 1:27:41Speaker 05

  Which, what? Twenty fourteen, yeah.

• 1:27:43David Imel?

  Twenty fourteen.

• 1:27:47Speaker 05

  What are those other phones?

• 1:27:54Speaker 05

Alright, flip 'em and read. What do you got?

• 1:27:58David Imel?

  Man. I can't, I can't.

• 1:28:03David Imel?

  Wait, oh-

• 1:28:03Speaker 05

Who wants to go first? David, put, put the marker down. Okay. Who wants to go first?

• 1:28:09Speaker 01

  I'll go, I'll go first.

• 1:28:10Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, I screwed this up.

• 1:28:12Speaker 01

  I'll try. Okay. 2014. I said iPhone 6S.

• 1:28:15Speaker 05

  Correct.

• 1:28:16Speaker 01

I said Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

• 1:28:20Speaker 05

  Correct.

• 1:28:20David Imel?

  Oh my gosh.

• 1:28:21Speaker 01

  I said LG G5.

• 1:28:23Speaker 05

  Wrong.

• 1:28:24Speaker 01

And then I said Nexus 6.

• 1:28:28Speaker 01

  And 5X.

• 1:28:30Speaker 05

  Correct.

• 1:28:31Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:28:33Speaker 05

  So you got 3.

• 1:28:33Speaker 01

That's pretty good, so it's probably just-

• 1:28:35Andrew Manganelli?

So the only chance I have is the LG G3.

• 1:28:38Speaker 05

  You said LG G3?

• 1:28:39Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah. Okay.

• 1:28:41Speaker 05

Correct, and the rest were wrong?

• 1:28:42David Imel?

  Oh, very nice.

• 1:28:43Andrew Manganelli?

Well, Galaxy Note 6, iPhone 7, Nexus, unless the 6P also came out, which I don't think it did, that was later, yeah?

• 1:28:48Speaker 05

Okay, so you got 1 correct.

• 1:28:49Andrew Manganelli?

I messed up when I started working here.

• 1:28:51Speaker 05

  David?

• 1:28:51David Imel?

  Okay, LG G6?

• 1:28:53Speaker 05

  LG G6? Nope.

• 1:28:56David Imel?

  Wait, really?

• 1:28:57Speaker 05

  Yeah, it was the G3.

• 1:28:59David Imel?

G3, apparently. Wow. Yeah. Okay. I put the Nexus 6.

• 1:29:04Speaker 05

  Correct.

• 1:29:05David Imel?

Uh, I put the Galaxy Note 8, which I was very wrong. And I don't even wanna say what my iPhone 1 was.

• 1:29:12Speaker 05

  Say it.

• 1:29:12David Imel?

I forgot all the S models, so I put iPhone 8/10, which was 2017, not 2014.

• 1:29:20Speaker 05

  Yeah, could, yeah.

• 1:29:20Andrew Manganelli?

  Almost.

• 1:29:21David Imel?

  Yeah, I'm bad.

• 1:29:22Speaker 05

Alright, so you got 1 as well.

• 1:29:23David Imel?

  Nice.

• 1:29:24Speaker 05

So, I think I'll do, each one of you gets the points. So David and Andrew get 1 point each, Marquez gets 3 points.

• 1:29:31David Imel?

  What?

• 1:29:32Speaker 01

Yeah, do I, so for 6 and 5X, do I just get 1 point for that?

• 1:29:35Speaker 05

Yeah, I was just 1 point.

• 1:29:36Speaker 01

Okay. Alright, I feel, cuz he said 6, but he didn't get 5X. So I feel like I should get a point for 5X as well.

• 1:29:42David Imel?

Well, wasn't it the 6P and the 5X came out at the same time?

• 1:29:46Speaker 05

The Huawei 6P and the LG-

• 1:29:49David Imel?

Yeah, the Nexus 6 launched on its own, release year.

• 1:29:52Speaker 05

Okay, so it is just the 6.

• 1:29:54Speaker 01

Okay, nevermind, yeah, nevermind, no 5X, okay.

• 1:29:56Andrew Manganelli?

Well, no, it doesn't change anything.

• 1:29:57Speaker 05

Yeah, it doesn't change anything, that's for sure, it's just-

• 1:29:59Speaker 01

  That's fair.

• 1:29:59Speaker 05

  Alright.

• 1:30:00Speaker 01

Good catch. I'll take 3 points though.

• 1:30:01David Imel?

  But Adam? That's fine.

• 1:30:04Speaker 01

  Man.

• 1:30:05David Imel?

  I'm just being a baby.

• 1:30:05Speaker 01

That was fun. Uh, okay. Fun new format. Yeah. Maybe that helps us catch David because his score is really high. I mean, he lost a points to catch him.

• 1:30:13David Imel?

  When is the extract?

• 1:30:16Speaker 01

You're counting down the minutes till the clock runs out?

• 1:30:18David Imel?

  Yeah, I want to win.

• 1:30:18Speaker 01

We have to catch you. We have to catch you at like 30 or something.

• 1:30:21David Imel?

  Yeah. Okay.

• 1:30:23Speaker 01
