If Apple Made a Camera, It’d be the Sigma BF

This week, Marques, Andrew, and David talk about the new Sigma BF camera that was just announced and looks absolutely stunning. After that, they talk about the iPhone 16E and the new things that the Amazon Alexa AI can (maybe) do. After that, we bring back Crown and Clown to discuss what the best/worst thing to happen in February was. Then we wrap it all up with trivia. Enjoy! Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from. But when that context is scattered across tools, threads, and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying blind. That's the problem that Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all these pieces together from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping. Learn more at jira.com.

• 1:23Speaker 01

That's J-I-R-A dot com. I'll start with the crown, because I think this one's just fun. Rivian's tan update. I think it's sick.

• 1:34David Imel?

As the crown? Out of left field, Marquez.

• 1:36Speaker 01

I don't think there is anything negative that anyone could possibly say about it, and therefore, it is my crown.

• 1:43Andrew Manganelli?

If a new color is the coolest thing that happened in February, we had a rough February.

• 1:47Speaker 01

It's not just a new color. It's a new trim package. Did you see the seats? You saw the seats.

• 1:51Andrew Manganelli?

  They look like Tesla.

• 1:52Speaker 01

Also a new color. It looks sick.

• 1:53Andrew Manganelli?

  Did you see that?

• 1:54Speaker 01

New dual-tone color. I want you to see the picture of the seats. They look great.

• 1:59Andrew Manganelli?

  They look like Tesla.

• 2:02Speaker 01

  How sick are those seats?

• 2:09Speaker 01

What is up people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts. I'm Marquez.

• 2:14Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm Andrew.

• 2:15David Imel?

  And I'm David.

• 2:16Speaker 01

And can I turn my headphones up a little bit?

• 2:20Speaker 04

  Absolutely.

• 2:22Speaker 01

Just a tiny, yeah, perfect. Thank you, Alice. Today's episode, we have OnePlus did a thing that they didn't mean to do. Sigma did a thing that they meant to do, and it was really interesting. Also, we speculate on iPhone 16e pricing and have a little bit more thoughts. The review is out by the time you watch this. And we're trying to figure out what's good with Alexa AI, because that's also brand new.

• 2:44David Imel?

  Alexa.

• 2:44Speaker 01

Come join us. Also, it's the end of the month, like literally the last day of the month as this goes up. So we have a new crown and cloud of the month that we'll have to figure out and agree on at some point. But first, actually first, we have a quick correction on Google Tasks.

• 2:58Andrew Manganelli?

I have a couple of corrections.

• 2:59Speaker 01

  A couple, okay.

• 3:00Andrew Manganelli?

And an answer to people having issues with Pocket Casts.

• 3:02David Imel?

This whole first segment is just like corrections and wrong.

• 3:05Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, it's our corrections and other people's corrections. Yeah.

• 3:08Speaker 01

  Okay, perfect.

• 3:09Speaker 04

That's perfect, because I actually have one from last week, too.

• 3:11Andrew Manganelli?

Sick. Okay. David, do you remember last week when I said the new Google Tasks browser was out? And you said, I've been using this forever?

• 3:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:20Andrew Manganelli?

So I found out what the difference is. Previously, you could have a page dedicated to just your Google Tasks, but it was inside of the calendar URL. So if you go to calendar.

• 3:30Speaker 01

  Just the URL.

• 3:31Andrew Manganelli?

So pretty much you can switch between calendar and tasks, which I did not know about.

• 3:38Speaker 01

  I didn't know that either.

• 3:39Andrew Manganelli?

Now, when you go to tasks.google.com, it is its own, no, that you weren't using this. This is new.

• 3:45Speaker 01

  All right.

• 3:47David Imel?

  It looks the same.

• 3:48Andrew Manganelli?

It does look the same. Look, it is the same. The only difference is that the top left says Tasks now and is dedicated to Tasks. And you can't go to.

• 3:57David Imel?

Why did they make a separate website?

• 3:58Andrew Manganelli?

I'm glad they did, because I had no idea this was here.

• 4:00Speaker 01

Somebody at Google probably got an email being like, "Quick, name five things you did this month." And they were like, "Uh, I made a website for a thing that already existed."

• 4:08Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. The basis of what we talked about last week was that Google has not forgotten Google Tasks, and that still remains true.

• 4:15Speaker 01

  Hashtag blessed.

• 4:16Andrew Manganelli?

  Hashtag blessed.

• 4:16Speaker 01

  Honestly.

• 4:17David Imel?

  That's huge.

• 4:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:18Andrew Manganelli?

Okay. And then I also have one other correction. Last week I said our Vox podcast at South by Southwest was 11:00 AM CST. It is at 10:00 AM CST. So if you're at South by Southwest. Come say, come watch, listen live. It's the first time we're ever doing this.

• 4:33Speaker 01

  Come live with us.

• 4:34Andrew Manganelli?

Come, yeah. Also, for people who heard this and thought to look up South by Southwest tickets just to come, they're very expensive.

• 4:42Speaker 01

Yeah, it's more if you're already at South by Southwest than hey, here's a thing happening at 10 a.m.

• 4:47Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, we would love to do this again later, but this is our trial run because Vox is setting it all up with their stage.

• 4:53Speaker 01

Think of it like this, if we can pull this off and this goes really well, then we can maybe do some other version of this with more people in the future. So with this smaller group, we'll test some things out. We'll try some stuff. We've been reading your comments. There's some good ideas in there. Keep going. But yeah, then we'll, we'll experiment with more, more later.

• 5:10David Imel?

  The next one's in Tahiti.

• 5:12Andrew Manganelli?

So that's, yeah, wow, heard it here first.

• 5:15Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's a leak.

• 5:17Andrew Manganelli?

  It's at Fire Festival 2.

• 5:21Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, I also have noticed a lot of people saying that they were having issues with waveform on Pocket Casts.

• 5:27Speaker 01

  I love Pocket Casts.

• 5:28Andrew Manganelli?

  You do?

• 5:29Speaker 04

Yeah, I've been using Pocket Casts. I haven't had any issues.

• 5:31Andrew Manganelli?

So I've, Marquez and I found out the issues along with some help from our subreddit. Essentially what's happening, people were saying within the last couple of weeks, Pocket Casts, when they try and download the newest episode, they're getting failed to download. So what we figured out is that the inside of Pocket Casts, there's the correct waveform RSS feed. And then there are two more feeds that are actually this company called Listenbox, downloading our YouTube video into audio and posting it on Pocket Casts.

• 6:00Speaker 01

  That's not us.

• 6:01Andrew Manganelli?

  That is not us.

• 6:02Speaker 01

  They can just do that?

• 6:03Andrew Manganelli?

Apparently. That is one of the questions I have in a minute. So I've, I read that some people enjoyed that because it would also download the video. So they could listen in Pocket Casts and if they wanted to reference really quickly the video, they could pop it up. But we're not the people doing that. And if you go to Listenbox right now, it says they're pausing operations until they can reliably bypass YouTube blocks.

• 6:25Speaker 01

Spoiler, you're not supposed to be doing that. Yeah. Until we can break terms of service reliably.

• 6:31David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 6:31Andrew Manganelli?

  So.

• 6:32Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 6:32Andrew Manganelli?

The way to tell the difference is if you go to Pocket Casts, the correct feed, which is audio only, is waveform, colon, the MKBHD podcast. Waveform clips is obviously not this, but there is a feed for waveform clips. And just waveform is not the correct one, so that will not be working.

• 6:50Speaker 01

Oh, my God. So the only correct one is the one that has the Vox logo at the top.

• 6:53Andrew Manganelli?

  Correct.

• 6:53Speaker 01

To be clear, there's only one correct feed.

• 6:55Andrew Manganelli?

  Yes.

• 6:55Speaker 01

  Pocket Casts.

• 6:57Andrew Manganelli?

Right now, we only have video on YouTube, audio on, through RSS feed, wherever you can get it. We've thought of some other ways of doing it, but we just haven't found the correct balance for that. We do, we keep an eye on it. But I have two questions here. If anyone from Listenbox is out there, do we still get view or download credit for that? I'm assuming no.

• 7:19Speaker 01

  And. No, they're just stealing.

• 7:21Andrew Manganelli?

  They're just taking.

• 7:21Speaker 01

Okay. Very clear, they're just a service that operates to let people create a podcast feed out of thin air by downloading a bunch of videos that show up on a YouTube channel.

• 7:30Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, okay, so I'll be using.

• 7:32Speaker 01

If it's not your YouTube channel, you don't get to make that podcast feed. You're stealing and putting it up and claiming to be us.

• 7:36Andrew Manganelli?

That's what I assume, so we will try and find a way to fix that.

• 7:40Speaker 01

Thank you to everyone that like called this out on social media.

• 7:43Andrew Manganelli?

It's funny, because it breaking and not working, which is also, that's part of the reason why this kind of sucks for us, because we have a bunch of people like, how come your guys' thing isn't working? It's like, well, all the stuff we did is working correctly. We did not do that.

• 7:55Speaker 01

  And now this stuff's broken.

• 7:57Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. So Pocket Casts people, I guess, I think there's a way to deal with it through Listenbox. But not cool, Listenbox, you probably should get permission from the people you're downloading from.

• 8:08Speaker 01

Also, it's illegal. Well, it's not illegal, but it's against terms of service. Like shades of, shades of, what was her name? Ray? No, Mira.

• 8:18Andrew Manganelli?

  When they asked her like.

• 8:20Speaker 01

But Mira Mararti. Yeah, are you downloading from YouTube?

• 8:24Speaker 01

  I can't say we're not doing that.

• 8:26David Imel?

  We're using publicly available data.

• 8:29Speaker 01

  Yeah, totally.

• 8:30David Imel?

Okay, my car is publicly available.

• 8:32Speaker 01

  Did you?

• 8:32David Imel?

  You can take it.

• 8:33Andrew Manganelli?

Did you see the like, the meta Slack message about the people feeling bad that they're, they were torrenting all the books inside of like, on Meta campus?

• 8:44Speaker 01

  No.

• 8:46Andrew Manganelli?

  It was like,

• 8:47David Imel?

  That's bad.

• 8:47Andrew Manganelli?

I feel pretty bad that we're doing this like, on Meta Wi-Fi. And then like, laughy face.

• 8:53David Imel?

Yeah, I mean, they should be doing it on Meta Wi-Fi, because if they were doing it at home, then they would be liable for it.

• 8:59Andrew Manganelli?

  Which Meta probably would prefer.

• 9:00David Imel?

Zuck is the one that should take responsibility.

• 9:03Speaker 01

  All right.

• 9:03David Imel?

  Evergreen.

• 9:04Andrew Manganelli?

Let's go to a correction, not from us.

• 9:07Speaker 01

Oh, yeah. So this is funny. It's kind of developed over the past couple of days slash week or two, but you may have seen the headline. The OnePlus Watch 3, which is out now, had a tiny typo on the back. It is basically meaningless. The watch is totally fine, but the typo on the back says "Made in China," except instead of "Made," it's "M-E-D-A."

• 9:29David Imel?

  Made up.

• 9:29Speaker 01

In China. It's just like, the text is whatever. It's Italian. Somebody messed it up. It's a "Made in China." The text is wrong. And so like, people, including me, took a picture of it, got a little laugh out of it. It's funny because it almost doesn't matter at all, but it is weird that it would make it to the final product, because then it makes you think, well, what else gets past these people and makes it to the final product that they didn't mean to?

• 9:53David Imel?

  Hmm.

• 9:54Speaker 01

Not sure. But the correction that they're issuing is they are allowing for returns and letting people, obviously you can keep it if you don't care.

• 10:05Andrew Manganelli?

  I would want to.

• 10:06Speaker 01

But yeah, maybe it's a limited edition thing. Keep it. Misprints are always worth more. Yeah.

• 10:11David Imel?

I mean, these aren't gonna be worth more, probably.

• 10:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:13David Imel?

But, yeah, they said that you could send it in for a full refund, or you could just keep it as a limited edition product. Apparently, they are ceasing selling them again until sometime in April.

• 10:25Speaker 01

  Yeah, they took it seriously.

• 10:27David Imel?

  Two-month delay now.

• 10:28Speaker 01

  That stinks.

• 10:29David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 10:30Speaker 01

That's like, Damn, how did this make it all the way through?

• 10:32David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 10:33Speaker 01

  This is kind of

• 10:34David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 10:35Speaker 01

  Wild that it made it.

• 10:36David Imel?

And they've probably made a lot of them by now.

• 10:38Speaker 01

Probably. There's probably a lot of inventory sitting around with that text on it.

• 10:41David Imel?

Yeah, what are they gonna do with it? They can't sell it.

• 10:43Andrew Manganelli?

They should sell it for like, uh, a hundred dollars off or something like that. It'd still be, they'd still make more money than just throwing them all in a landfill.

• 10:51David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 10:52Speaker 01

Does this feel like an overcorrection? Like, does anyone care?

• 10:55David Imel?

I feel like it's an overcorrection.

• 10:56Andrew Manganelli?

  Uh.

• 10:57Speaker 01

I mean, better to overcorrect than not do anything.

• 10:59David Imel?

Said, are they legally allowed to say things that don't say they're

• 11:04Speaker 01

Made in China? Does it have to say made in China?

• 11:06David Imel?

Why does everything say where it's made? That's, that's a question.

• 11:09Speaker 01

  That's a fair question.

• 11:10Andrew Manganelli?

That's definitely a legal thing, and that's a good point.

• 11:12David Imel?

  Really?

• 11:13Speaker 04

But sometimes it just says China, right? So is the meta in, like, not even matter?

• 11:19Andrew Manganelli?

Could you make the argument that it's obvious enough that that still means made in China? Like, from a legal perspective?

• 11:24David Imel?

  I think.

• 11:25Andrew Manganelli?

  Or even the meta, yeah.

• 11:27Speaker 04

Sounds like we need the Eagle team.

• 11:30David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 11:30Speaker 04

They did not pay me to say that.

• 11:32David Imel?

I, yeah. That would, that would be an interesting, uh, deep dive.

• 11:36Speaker 01

To quote Rick Ross, "I don't have the answers. I usually got all the answers, but I don't have the answers."

• 11:42David Imel?

  Is that the

• 11:44Speaker 04

  Is that the walnut?

• 11:45David Imel?

  Of the almond?

• 11:46Speaker 01

  It's my favorite clip.

• 11:47David Imel?

Yes. Yep. I also heard that this watch is quite good.

• 11:51Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, I've heard good things.

• 11:53David Imel?

It has like seven day battery life. That's the main.

• 11:55Andrew Manganelli?

I've heard the biggest upgrade from the watch two is the watch two had the rotating digital crown that didn't scroll.

• 12:01David Imel?

  No.

• 12:01Andrew Manganelli?

They added scrolling. And also, everyone, apparently, I forgot about it, but the watch one was like

• 12:06David Imel?

  Horrible.

• 12:07Andrew Manganelli?

  Terrible.

• 12:08David Imel?

  It was really bad.

• 12:09Andrew Manganelli?

So, yeah, people seem pretty impressed by this already.

• 12:11David Imel?

Yeah, the watch one was the one that just came with like all the built-in fitness features, but that's basically all it could do.

• 12:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:17David Imel?

And it was just bad. But, so it's good that they've made it quite a bit better.

• 12:22Speaker 01

I will continue to use mine with the typo on it.

• 12:24Andrew Manganelli?

Real quick, there are multiple laws requiring made in.

• 12:28David Imel?

So maybe that's why they ceased operations. Interesting.

• 12:32Speaker 01

  Turned out it mattered.

• 12:33Speaker 04

Yeah, so, uh, thank you to French-speaking anonymous.

• 12:40David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 12:41Speaker 04

Listener who, who wrote me an email.

• 12:43Speaker 01

Do you want to read the email?

• 12:43Speaker 04

I, I do not want to read the email because, because.

• 12:49Speaker 04

I was right. Okay, but I did.

• 12:52David Imel?

  But he's French.

• 12:52Speaker 04

I did. No, no, no, no, no. I misspoke. Okay, and I can, I can explain. I, I led our dear listeners down the wrong path because last week I implied that the French word tonneau translates into English as ton, which is not true. The French word for tonne is, get this, ton.

• 13:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 13:14Speaker 04

What I was trying to say is that the English word tonneau is borrowed from the French word tonneau. And the French word, the modern French word tonneau is derived from an ancient or medieval French word, also called old French word, that I have written in all my notes here to make sure I don't get it wrong this time. Oh, the old French word is also tonne, like T-O-N-N-E, which is the same as the old English tunne or the medieval Latin tuna. So all of these words are related because they all mean the cask, the barrel thing, right? Like, they, they all used to mean barrel because you used to measure how many barrels could fit on a ship, which is where we get the, the idea of the

• 13:54Speaker 04

ton. But, uh, Marquez, unfortunately, um, we have to take your point away.

• 14:01David Imel?

  Man Andrews, right?

• 14:02Andrew Manganelli?

  Wait, wait, no, just Marquez's.

• 14:03David Imel?

Just, didn't they both get it?

• 14:06Speaker 04

Oh, you also got it right?

• 14:07Andrew Manganelli?

  I think so.

• 14:07Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 14:09Andrew Manganelli?

So who's that guy? How do I ban this guy from Waveform?

• 14:12Speaker 04

I'm terribly sorry. This one is on me, but you guys have to suffer the punishment, nonetheless.

• 14:17David Imel?

In the words of our listener, I will maintain my healthy five-point lead.

• 14:21Speaker 04

I just want to say that I spent so much time researching medieval Latin only to misspeak in game time and blow it all. So.

• 14:31David Imel?

  We've all been there.

• 14:32Speaker 04

My apologies, country of France. You miss every shot you don't take, Ellis. Thank you. All right. Want to talk about some Sigma stuff?

• 14:40David Imel?

  I want to talk about.

• 14:41Speaker 04

  The Sigma.

• 14:42David Imel?

  The grindset.

• 14:43Speaker 04

  The Sigma boyfriend.

• 14:44David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 14:45Speaker 01

I have a, I want to talk about the Sigma camera.

• 14:47David Imel?

  Yeah, let's do it.

• 14:48Speaker 01

Sick. Okay, Sigma announces BF camera. Uh, this thing looks sick. And I'm, I'm choosing my words wisely. It looks sick. It also looks like it feels great.

• 15:04Speaker 01

So if you get to look at the images.

• 15:06David Imel?

  Can you describe it?

• 15:07Speaker 01

Yeah, you'll see that it looks, it is essentially a unibody aluminum, like mirrorless camera sized body, but with a full frame 35mm sensor inside. Sigma's can, or Sigma's lens mount on it.

• 15:19David Imel?

  What's L-mount?

• 15:19Speaker 01

  L-mount, sorry.

• 15:20David Imel?

Which they have an alliance with.

• 15:22Speaker 01

But also, the buttons are all metal and the jog wheel is metal and textured and the front of the body of the camera is half knurled and half clean matte. It's so sick. There's a black one and a white one. I just, I want this to be a good camera so that I can use such a beautiful camera. It looks incredible.

• 15:47David Imel?

Sigma is beautiful. Very well known for making really freaking weird cameras.

• 15:52Speaker 01

And lenses, to be honest. I've, I've long appreciated Sigma's

• 15:58Speaker 01

sometimes ability, sometimes persistence at making weird cameras. They are the only ones that make a wide angle zoom, like the 18 to 35 and the 24 to 35 that I use. So shout out to them. They also randomly, I think, approached me with like, "Yeah, we also have like a 9mm f18." So just crazy lenses.

• 16:15David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 16:15Speaker 01

That, um, yeah, I appreciate. They're the only ones that make them.

• 16:18David Imel?

You posted on social that this is like the most Apple camera that could possibly be.

• 16:22Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 16:23David Imel?

I think more like Johnny Ive though, you know?

• 16:25Speaker 01

For sure. Yeah. Johnny Ive Day's Apple would have made a camera like this. If you told them to make a camera, it for sure would have had no memory card slot.

• 16:35Speaker 01

Only internal memory. Now, look, I, I like internal memory. The Hasselblad has internal memory, but to also not have a card slot is an extra step that they didn't have to take.

• 16:46David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 16:47Speaker 01

So this has like 230 gigs of built in memory.

• 16:49Andrew Manganelli?

I mean, with the, this like unibody metal, like aluminum, putting a SD card slot in there would, one, take away from the design and two, probably cost so much.

• 17:00David Imel?

They have a, they have a swappable battery. Like the battery just comes out. But it doesn't like close. It's not like a door. It just like pops out of the bottom. So it becomes unibody, it becomes flush with the body.

• 17:13Andrew Manganelli?

  Like the Hasselblad?

• 17:14David Imel?

  Uh, yes.

• 17:15Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 17:15David Imel?

  Just like the X-T.

• 17:16Andrew Manganelli?

Can't believe I'm gonna say this, but I actually approve of this, of not having a memory card.

• 17:21Speaker 01

So would you rather have had like external storage, like larger storage option versions of the camera?

• 17:26Speaker 05

  I think this is enough.

• 17:27Speaker 01

  230 gigs?

• 17:28Speaker 05

230 gigs is like thousands of raw photos.

• 17:33Speaker 01

  This camera shoots 6K video.

• 17:34Speaker 05

Yeah, if you're doing video, then you have a problem. But I don't know if this is necessary. Like this, people aren't using this to vlog, you know?

• 17:43Speaker 04

  It is also HEVC video.

• 17:46Speaker 05

Yeah, it's like compressed and highly.

• 17:48Speaker 01

Two and a half hours of video, it says.

• 17:49Speaker 05

Yeah. You don't think that's enough? Your, your longest A-rolls are like an hour.

• 17:54Speaker 01

Yeah, but that's A-roll. Like if I'm running around and I already have 100 gigs of stuff and I haven't dumped it yet and I go out to another thing I want to shoot. Now I'm thinking like, oh, I haven't dumped the other stuff, but I, I don't want to shoot too much now because then I might not have enough for later. Like I actually have to think about it.

• 18:10David Imel?

I have something that I need to disclose. I have a one terabyte SD card that I've been using for about five years. And I have never wiped this card. So.

• 18:25Speaker 05

  My point exactly.

• 18:27Speaker 01

That's a terabyte. That's four times as much as this.

• 18:30David Imel?

Which is why I'm saying, I don't, like, the Hasselblad has a terabyte of built-in memory.

• 18:34Speaker 01

  That's awesome.

• 18:35David Imel?

  Flash storage is really cheap.

• 18:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:38David Imel?

  They should have done 500.

• 18:39Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 18:40Speaker 05

Agreed. I will never say no to more, but I think 256 is more than enough. Here, that is my argument.

• 18:46Speaker 01

  It's 230.

• 18:47Speaker 05

  230, okay, more than enough.

• 18:48David Imel?

Because the OS is on it, that's why.

• 18:50Speaker 05

I feel like, for people that are content creators, like you're going out and you're shooting multiple events. I could see your, your argument, Marquez.

• 18:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:59Speaker 05

But this is for people who buy Leicas and just go shooting on the weekends.

• 19:02David Imel?

Yeah, I was talking to LSNA HR on the way in. This is kind of like the affordable version of a Leica because it, the whole thing is about the experience, the build quality, the fact that it's a single piece of aluminum, has no tilt screen. You know, the Leica is the same way. It's just a single LCD. The thing that really kind of kills this for me is that there's no viewfinder. And it's just the screen.

• 19:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 19:28David Imel?

The fact that it doesn't tilt, it's an LCD. I don't know how bright it gets, so like out in the middle of the day, might suck. Might suck.

• 19:36Speaker 01

  It might.

• 19:37David Imel?

It's 24 megapixels, which I do approve of.

• 19:40Andrew Manganelli?

Wait, before we get too far.

• 19:41David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 19:42Andrew Manganelli?

Can I just talk about the SD card thing?

• 19:44David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 19:44Andrew Manganelli?

I feel like we've gone so far.

• 19:45David Imel?

  Sorry.

• 19:45Andrew Manganelli?

I was talking to Vin about it, and I think we came down to the biggest issue with it is, is if something happens with your storage, now it's sending it in to get fixed versus if something happens with your SD card.

• 19:56Speaker 01

That's why it's so Apple. It's so Apple.

• 19:58Andrew Manganelli?

I think that's what like makes me the most upset about it.

• 20:01Speaker 04

Do you remember the flip cam? The thing that I don't ever talk about?

• 20:04Speaker 01

  The flips.

• 20:05Speaker 04

You remember how you got the videos off that thing?

• 20:07Andrew Manganelli?

  Plugged it in.

• 20:08Speaker 04

Yeah, it had like the Switchblade USB port.

• 20:11David Imel?

  Yeah, that was epic. Yeah.

• 20:13Andrew Manganelli?

  Sorry, go back.

• 20:14David Imel?

  Sure.

• 20:15Speaker 04

And no one ever complained about that?

• 20:17Andrew Manganelli?

Yes, they did. Are you kidding me?

• 20:19Speaker 04

  No, no, no. I can't, I can't hear you.

• 20:21David Imel?

I also think like this thing has a sub bezel on the screen.

• 20:25Speaker 01

  Yeah, it does.

• 20:26David Imel?

It's got a giant, it's a screen encased in the body, which is not flush. And then there's a sub bezel.

• 20:32Speaker 01

They try to hide it in the render.

• 20:33Andrew Manganelli?

I like the one corner, you can tell the other ones are dark enough.

• 20:36David Imel?

Yeah, I'm surprised they even show that.

• 20:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:39David Imel?

You know, it's, it's like, okay, here's the, here's the thing about it.

• 20:43Speaker 01

  So pretty.

• 20:44David Imel?

It's called the Sigma BF. You might think that stands for boyfriend. No.

• 20:48Speaker 01

  Sigma BF.

• 20:49David Imel?

  BF stands for beautiful foolishness.

• 20:52Speaker 01

  Does it really?

• 20:53David Imel?

  Yes, it does.

• 20:53Andrew Manganelli?

  Wow, I love that.

• 20:55Speaker 01

  That is really good.

• 20:56David Imel?

They are basically admitting that this is a ridiculous camera.

• 21:00Speaker 01

  But beautiful.

• 21:01David Imel?

  But it's beautiful.

• 21:03Speaker 01

  Damn Sigma.

• 21:04David Imel?

So it has like a lot of things about it that are like impractical, but.

• 21:08Speaker 01

  Damn Sigma.

• 21:09David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 21:09Andrew Manganelli?

Is that really what it means?

• 21:10David Imel?

It is really what it means.

• 21:12Speaker 01

Yeah, I believe it instantly. It has two hour battery life. It has a nice metal shutter button.

• 21:17Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, yeah. I came in here the other day when it was announced saying that I was like super obsessed with this and wanted to buy it. And then I thought about it. And I think a lot of people are gonna go through the same process where you start to realize the important things that you need in a camera that this does not have.

• 21:34David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 21:35Andrew Manganelli?

Like, I think a flip out screen is like.

• 21:38David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 21:39Andrew Manganelli?

Why does this not have that? I need that. That's not even a nice to have. At this point, that's like an I need that.

• 21:44David Imel?

It's hard to shoot with, and especially when you don't have a viewfinder. It's just so, even the Leicas at least have an O V F. Yeah. An optical viewfinder.

• 21:53Speaker 01

It feels like if, if Apple made a camera like this, they would make similar sets of concessions of things that seem like you have to have. But then they would try to engineer their way out the other side of like, it's the brightest screen ever in a camera or something like that. We have a A18 chip so that you have zero latency between sensor feed and viewfinder cam. Like they would, they would try to engineer their way out of it, but they would totally be like, yeah, also there's no viewfinder.

• 22:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 22:19Speaker 01

And you'd be like, this camera, it needs a viewfinder.

• 22:21David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 22:22Speaker 01

So that's why I thought it looked like an Apple camera.

• 22:24David Imel?

Also, the U X looks kind of bad. Um, Sebastian Dewitt, who makes Halide, had mentioned that this is the reason he got into U X design in the first place. And app design is because companies make like an absolutely beautiful piece of hardware and then the software is terrible. Just like cars. Mm hmm. So, yeah, um, we also didn't mention it has a status monitor right above the jog wheel, which is basically a little micro L C D screen. That shows you like aperture and stuff like that. It looks cool. I love that there's like a very small amount of buttons. The lenses they now also make in silver, um, to make it work, you know, with the camera. Yeah, I think it's going to be for people who like want something really pretty that is better than their phone.

• 23:09David Imel?

It's $2,000, which is not unheard of.

• 23:12Speaker 01

Yeah, I looked at the B and H preorder listing and saw $2,000 and I was like, I think I expected higher.

• 23:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 23:18Speaker 01

Actually, I thought, I mean, I've never shot with a Sigma mirrorless camera, so I feel like I was thinking about Sony A7 type of range. When I saw full frame.

• 23:27David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 23:28Speaker 01

And two grand is not insane.

• 23:31David Imel?

The other thing about this is that people were hoping that it would have a Foveon sensor. And what a Foveon sensor is, is a sensor that has, uh, all three color filters on each pixel. So instead of having to do demosaicing where you like do this process to actually show the color. Every single pixel gets all the color. So, um, it looks a lot better. It's like sharper and.

• 23:53Speaker 01

It's like three, yeah, it would be much sharper.

• 23:55David Imel?

They're much harder to make, uh, and they used to make them. They stopped making them after a while, but yeah. But unfortunately it does not have a Foveon sensor, so.

• 24:04Speaker 01

If that was a trivia question, sorry.

• 24:07Speaker 04

It was not. But I do want to say, like, and I, every time I look at the BF, I can't stop thinking about it. Like, the feature set is not that far off from my EOS M. Like, obviously, this is a dramatically better camera. But at the same time, the EOS M is 18 megapixels, so I'm only missing six of them. I don't have a full frame sensor. I have an APS-C sensor.

• 24:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 24:33Speaker 04

But other than that, same viewfinder status.

• 24:38Speaker 01

  Around the same size.

• 24:39Speaker 04

It's around the same amount of memory.

• 24:40Speaker 01

  EOS M has expandable storage.

• 24:42Speaker 04

  Bingo.

• 24:43Speaker 01

  Oh, that's good.

• 24:44Speaker 04

And, and get this, with Magic Lantern, I can shoot raw video on the EOS M.

• 24:50Speaker 01

  That's true.

• 24:50Speaker 04

  Checkmate, Sigma.

• 24:51Speaker 01

The Android of cameras. This is great.

• 24:53Speaker 04

  Who's the Sigma now?

• 24:56Speaker 01

They are. On that note, we should take a quick break, but I do think we should also do trivia.

• 25:04Speaker 05

The pause is back. The pause is back.

• 25:06Speaker 01

  Sequel, yeah.

• 25:09Speaker 05

  All right, first question.

• 25:10Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 25:10Speaker 05

In 2014, invites were given out through a promotion known as Smash the Past, in which 100 users would be selected to win an opportunity to purchase for $1 what smartphone? Marques, that was almost awesome.

• 25:25Speaker 01

Almost. I'll just write it now, so it don't...

• 25:27Speaker 05

Audio listeners, he tried to flip his marker into his hand.

• 25:31Speaker 01

  Don't say.

• 25:32Speaker 05

  I know, I can't say. That's the point.

• 25:33Speaker 01

  So you...

• 25:33Andrew Manganelli?

Wait, we're only naming the company?

• 25:35Speaker 05

  Company, phone, all of it.

• 25:37Speaker 01

  There was a, in 2014.

• 25:38Speaker 05

  In 2014.

• 25:39Speaker 01

  That's a good hint.

• 25:40Speaker 05

The promotion was Smash the Past.

• 25:42Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah, I know this.

• 25:43Speaker 05

  Smash.

• 25:45Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 25:45Speaker 05

  Nice.

• 25:46Speaker 04

No, no, no, no, no, no.

• 25:49Speaker 01

Well, hey, think about that. We'll think about it, too. Answers will be at the end like usual. We'll be right back.

• 27:47Speaker 01

All right, welcome back. I'm holding the iPhone 16e here in my hands. I've been using it for a little over a week now. Now that you're watching this, the review is out.

• 27:58Speaker 01

I can't wait to watch other people's reviews because I assume they will also have some of the same thoughts as me. But in general, to summarize, iPhone 16E kind of replaces the iPhone SE, but not really. It's its own new segment. It's just not a budget phone anymore. The SE iPhones were in the $400 range. This is a $599 iPhone to start. This phone that I'm holding here that I'm testing has a storage upgrade. This phone costs $900. So I'm testing a $900 iPhone 16E. And I'm supposed to evaluate it in the landscape of other phones you could get for that money and the landscape of other iPhones you might be considering if you're upgrading from an older phone.

• 28:42Speaker 01

And my conclusion, my review, if you've watched it, you already know, is I can't think of anyone who should start with this phone. I think if you have $600 to spend and you have an old iPhone right now, there's a listing on walmart.com for a refurbished iPhone 16 or iPhone 15 Pro. Everything about that phone is better than this phone.

• 29:02David Imel?

  And it's cheaper?

• 29:03Speaker 01

And it's the same price, $600.

• 29:05David Imel?

  Wow.

• 29:05Speaker 01

Brighter screen, higher refresh rate, triple cameras, similar battery life. There's a whole bunch of things about that phone that are great.

• 29:14David Imel?

  Apple intelligence.

• 29:15Speaker 01

  Apple intelligence, exactly.

• 29:16David Imel?

Oh, wait, sorry, that's a downgrade.

• 29:17Speaker 01

But here's the highlights of the 16E that I think are at least a little bit interesting. One, it is the A18 in the body of an iPhone 14, basically. So it brings at least the cheapest new iPhone up to a modern size and shape and look. Two, the battery life is great. It has a physically larger battery than the iPhone 14 otherwise would have because, three, they've introduced a new part called the C1, which combines 4G, 5G, satellite and GPS, I think, all into one chip.

• 29:49David Imel?

  Except for millimeter wave.

• 29:50Speaker 01

No millimeter wave, so you don't get that, by the way, the 15 Pro does. But you get all of that in a new, smaller, more efficient chip that allows for even better battery life in this phone. And we expect to see, at least I expect to see that in future iPhones and other devices as well that have 4G, 5G satellite GPS, but that's debuting in this lower volume iPhone.

• 30:14Speaker 01

  And that's kind of it.

• 30:15David Imel?

  Action button.

• 30:16Speaker 01

It's an iPhone. It has an action button. It has a single camera on the back. Oh, this has a lot of parallels to the Pixel 8A. Because it came out when the Pixel A, Pixel 8 was already really, Pixel 9, God, I want to remember. There's so many Pixels.

• 30:32David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 30:32Speaker 01

But it came out when the higher end base Pixel was already discounted.

• 30:36David Imel?

  Right.

• 30:36Speaker 01

And was basically the same price.

• 30:38David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 30:38Speaker 01

And this smaller camera sensor, it's not that much worse, but it is a different look, kind of similar to the Pixel A.

• 30:45David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 30:45Speaker 01

Uh, and it's just, yeah, if you, if you want a cheap, you know, new iPhone, this is that phone, but also it's not cheap.

• 30:55David Imel?

  It's lighter.

• 30:56Speaker 01

It is lighter. It is lighter than the Pro. If you value that, get this phone. There you go. You found the person.

• 31:01David Imel?

They also took out Wi-Fi 7 for some reason.

• 31:03Speaker 01

  Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 are not included, um.

• 31:07David Imel?

Which, whoever buys this won't care, but.

• 31:09Speaker 01

No ultra wide band, no millimeter wave 5G, a lot of little things, no MagSafe is probably the biggest thing. Yeah.

• 31:17David Imel?

  That's the worst part.

• 31:17Speaker 01

So that's, there's like a bunch of little things that stack up on top of each other. Some of them I honestly don't think are gonna matter to this buyer.

• 31:23David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 31:24Speaker 01

  Like Wi-Fi 7, they don't have a Wi-Fi 7 router, so it's fine.

• 31:27David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 31:27Speaker 01

Um, even the, yeah, the single less GPU core, like that's not gonna matter, but yeah.

• 31:33Andrew Manganelli?

It's all the things that you could have cut out at $450 and no one would have cared about.

• 31:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:39Andrew Manganelli?

It's not all the things you can cut out.

• 31:40Speaker 01

  450.

• 31:41Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 31:42Speaker 01

So my exercise for you guys is what price is this phone a good deal? Cause I think right now, the phone itself is actually totally fine. It's just a bad deal. At what price does it actually make sense to buy this phone? If you had to buy it outright. A lot of people just get a carrier deal or whatever, just walk in and go, what phone am I gonna get for free with an upgrade? And it doesn't even matter. But if you were spending the dollars, this is $599, what price does it make sense to buy this phone?

• 32:08David Imel?

So the old SE was $429 and before that was $399.

• 32:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 32:12David Imel?

So it's already a massive jump.

• 32:14Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, there's so many people, sorry to cut off, but like, there's so many people who kept saying, stop comparing it to the SE. This isn't the SE. Yes, it is. It's. It's the cheaper iPhone that comes out at a totally different time than all the other iPhones.

• 32:27Speaker 01

Why would it not be compared to this?

• 32:28Andrew Manganelli?

I assume a lot of the. Where's the S, bro? I don't know. Explain that.

• 32:32Speaker 01

Okay, they renamed it, yes, but effectively the iPhone SE was old. We want to give you the cheapest new iPhone available. So what we're gonna do is parts bin this thing. We're gonna give you an old iPhone body with the new chip in it so that you can have a future-proof cheap phone for a while. That's exactly what this is.

• 32:45Andrew Manganelli?

  That's exactly what this is.

• 32:46Speaker 01

This is the iPhone 14 body. This is the A18. This is the same formula.

• 32:51Andrew Manganelli?

I think it's the reincarnated SE where we might potentially get them more often because now we're linking it to a number. But I still think this is totally reasonable to compare it to the SE, especially because of release date timing.

• 33:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 33:04Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 33:04David Imel?

Yeah. Uh, the MagSafe thing is a big thing for me.

• 33:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 33:08David Imel?

  So pricing wise.

• 33:12David Imel?

Okay, tariffs, we talked about. Now there are going to be major tariffs. Whether or not that influenced Apple changing the pricing of this last minute? And how much it might have changed the pricing? If this thing had come out at 549, how would you feel?

• 33:30Speaker 01

Still be kinda tough for me. I think they could do 499.

• 33:33David Imel?

  499 feels right.

• 33:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 33:35Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. Match it with the Pixel A series, right? That's at 499 now?

• 33:38Speaker 01

It's a more competitive price segment.

• 33:41David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 33:42Andrew Manganelli?

They had been cheaper than the A series in the past, right? How much was the Pixel A series when the SE was, SE 3 was?

• 33:50Speaker 01

They're all playing around the 4 or 5 dollar price.

• 33:52David Imel?

  The Pixel.

• 33:53Andrew Manganelli?

  429, right?

• 33:53David Imel?

  The Pixel 4A was 349.

• 33:56Andrew Manganelli?

  At one point.

• 33:57David Imel?

Yeah, so just saying. Yeah, I don't know. The thing about the United States, well, one of the things about the United States is that the price of things, the price of phones, like, does not matter in the United States. Because the difference between buying the SE at a carrier and doing a 24-month contract and buying the regular 16 at a carrier and doing a 4-month contract is like.

• 34:21Speaker 01

  Nothing.

• 34:21David Imel?

  Eight dollars a month.

• 34:22Speaker 01

Which is why you see that the most popular iPhone is the Pro Max.

• 34:26David Imel?

  Yep.

• 34:26Speaker 01

Because it's just a few extra dollars per month on your carrier deal and you're gonna get a trade-in and it's just the way phones are here.

• 34:33David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 34:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:34David Imel?

So I would love to know how popular the old SE was for that reason. Maybe those buyers bought the phone outright because it was an amount of money that they felt, okay, just spending the money outright.

• 34:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:46David Imel?

But I don't think most people are going to feel, okay, spending $600 outright. So I feel like this is not going to sell very well.

• 34:52Speaker 01

Yeah, I would say in the markets that people do buy phones outright and hardware is very competitive. For $600, you could get a phone with triple cameras, 120 Hz display, 5,000 milliampere battery, fast charging wireless. Like, there's gonna be a ton of better specs.

• 35:07David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 35:08Speaker 01

So the argument for the iPhone SE has always been, well, this is the cheap iPhone.

• 35:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 35:13Speaker 01

You want an iPhone, and so this is the cheap one. So the cheap iPhone is just way more expensive now. There just is no...

• 35:20David Imel?

And in those markets, everybody uses WhatsApp and people are not locked into the Apple ecosystem either. So you can buy a nothing phone 2A or whatever, 2A plus, whatever it was called.

• 35:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:30David Imel?

For so, for cheaper than this.

• 35:32Speaker 01

Yeah, so I think in hardware competitive markets, this price, this phone, no reason to buy it.

• 35:37David Imel?

No. I just don't think there's a reason to buy it in any market.

• 35:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:41David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 35:41Speaker 01

I think that's where, that's where it kind of landed with the review. The opening for the review, if you haven't seen it, is a sketch where a world's most honest carrier employee has to talk to someone who wants the iPhone 16e really bad.

• 35:56David Imel?

  Awkward.

• 35:57Speaker 01

And tries to get it recommended.

• 35:58David Imel?

  Awkward.

• 35:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:59Andrew Manganelli?

I'm gonna end this with a compliment.

• 36:01Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 36:01Andrew Manganelli?

I love the back of this.

• 36:03Speaker 01

  It's matte.

• 36:04Andrew Manganelli?

  Matte black.

• 36:05Speaker 01

  Ultra clean.

• 36:06Andrew Manganelli?

Super clean. First of all, maybe I love it because I helped Brendan with the robot shot of it. It was way easier to clean than all those smudgy phones whenever we do it. But matte, single, this is just clean.

• 36:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:17Andrew Manganelli?

It's like, this is the de facto default iPhone right here, and they did a good job with it.

• 36:21Speaker 01

Yeah, I called it super clean and boring. Ellis, for some reason Ellis does not like this phone.

• 36:26Speaker 04

  That thing sucks.

• 36:27Speaker 01

  What's wrong with this phone?

• 36:28Andrew Manganelli?

  It's not purple.

• 36:29Speaker 01

The back of this phone looks so...

• 36:30Speaker 04

What did I say earlier? It looks like you, it looks like an iPhone without eyebrows, like...

• 36:34Speaker 01

  It looks like an iPod.

• 36:35Speaker 04

It's, no, it's, it's completely, if you ask like a four-year-old to like ham-fistedly draw an iPhone, that's what they'd draw. It's not, it's not it.

• 36:45David Imel?

I also have another, another thing. The notch by now just looks really outdated.

• 36:50Speaker 01

  I don't know. I don't think it's that bad.

• 36:53David Imel?

I think that the old iPhone SE, because it had a home button.

• 36:57Speaker 01

  It looked.

• 36:57David Imel?

It was different enough that it didn't necessarily feel like super outdated and it was a different input mechanism. But this is, this is the same input mechanism, but with a worse notch.

• 37:08Speaker 01

Okay, I feel almost the exact opposite.

• 37:10David Imel?

  Wow.

• 37:10Speaker 01

I feel like now that I've used this phone and it's the same size as my 15, 16 Pro and everything, like I don't notice the notch. It feels the same as a dynamic island. If it had the cool software bubbly features, that would be nice, but it doesn't, whatever. But when I look back now at the three-year-old SE with that huge forehead and a huge bezel at the bottom and the home button, I'm like, oh, that's way worse.

• 37:34David Imel?

  I guess that's fair.

• 37:35Speaker 01

So it feels like we brought the iPhone, the cheapest iPhone into like the age of modern iPhones.

• 37:39David Imel?

I just really don't want to teach my mom how to use Face ID.

• 37:43Speaker 01

Well, you'd have to with no matter what you do, you know, SE with a notch or with a dynamic island.

• 37:48David Imel?

With the home button, she just uses her.

• 37:50Speaker 01

  That's fair.

• 37:51David Imel?

  Her fingerprint.

• 37:52Speaker 01

Yeah, the home button was easy for the most people.

• 37:54David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 37:55Speaker 01

Yeah. Well, there's no more home button on anything anymore, so.

• 37:58David Imel?

  Pour one out.

• 37:59Speaker 01

Yeah, rip home button. Okay, I want to end this with a question. There are several reasons why this phone may have been more expensive, right? R and D on the C1 chip, tariffs, overall strategy, whatever. Do we think that the iPhone 17 lineup at the end of this year is also going to get a price hike in some way?

• 38:22David Imel?

  Yes.

• 38:23Speaker 01

Cause I am starting to feel like we should brace for that.

• 38:27David Imel?

Definitely. The other thing about that is that if there's a price hike and there's also the slim, which was rumored to be potentially expensive, and that's got to fit in there. And then if this, if there's an E for the 17 as well. There's gonna be too many iPhones next year.

• 38:44Speaker 01

So I don't think they're gonna drop the E in September.

• 38:48Andrew Manganelli?

I think they'll keep this same release date.

• 38:50Speaker 01

So that means in September, they're going to adjust the iPhone lineup. You know how every year they drop some out and add some new ones in? So in September, it's going to be 16E at $599. 17, which I guess might start at $899, which seems insane. They, I, there's also rumors they're gonna bring promotion to the base iPhones. But 899, 999, 1099, 1199, or 1199, 1299. 1299 for a base 17 Pro Max is a lot, but I feel like they could do that this year. And then fitting the Slim iPhone somewhere in there. Maybe it's in between the E and the base or above all of them. Maybe.

• 39:31Andrew Manganelli?

I still think if there is Slim iPhone, it takes the place of 17 Max.

• 39:39Speaker 01

Oh, you don't think they're adding to it? You think they're replacing?

• 39:41Andrew Manganelli?

I think they'll still be two, two base non-pros.

• 39:46Speaker 01

  The plus.

• 39:47Andrew Manganelli?

  The plus, sorry, sorry.

• 39:48Speaker 01

Oh. So you think 17 and 17 Air instead of 17 and 17?

• 39:54David Imel?

  I think that's right.

• 39:55Speaker 01

  I think that's right.

• 39:55Andrew Manganelli?

I think that'd be my guess in there. Cause I just think five iPhones is too much.

• 39:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:59Andrew Manganelli?

It's, um, and then I do think 17E, if it comes out, would come out later. Although I do think it should come out at the same time possibly. But confusing. Wait, so with this price increase on everything, do you think we're gonna have a similar pers? Cause this increase from the SE3 was 2022. It came out at $429. I looked up Pixel 6A was $450 then. So it was cheaper than 6A. Now it is $100 more expensive than the Pixel A series.

• 40:28David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 40:29Speaker 05

Well, we'll wait to see what happens the next couple of months.

• 40:31Andrew Manganelli?

  True.

• 40:32Speaker 05

When Pixel 5A comes out. What if that's more expensive too?

• 40:34Andrew Manganelli?

  Pixel. Nine A, right?

• 40:37Speaker 05

Thank you, yes. I don't know.

• 40:39Speaker 01

They did increase the price on the Pixel nine as well. Remember?

• 40:43Andrew Manganelli?

Cause like Pixel eight, seven and eight were super. This is like, this feels like the opposite of, was it Pixels six?

• 40:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:49Andrew Manganelli?

Where like the six versus six Pro, the six was such a good deal.

• 40:52Speaker 01

  It was a $300 Delta.

• 40:53Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, this feels like the cheap one is such a bad deal. It's dumb not to do the extra hundred dollars.

• 40:59Speaker 01

  Yeah. Yeah. Hundred percent.

• 41:02Speaker 05

  Damn.

• 41:02Speaker 04

Do you think there are, cause ET News reported that it seems like Apple is about to finalize their part suppliers for their hypothetical passport fold? Do you think they're making room for the eighteen?

• 41:14Andrew Manganelli?

  Too. Who? ET News?

• 41:17Speaker 01

  It's like a.

• 41:17Andrew Manganelli?

  Entertainment Television? Entertainment Tonight?

• 41:20Speaker 04

It's a Korean like electronics industry.

• 41:22Speaker 01

So you're saying there, there, you think their foldable might come out next year?

• 41:27Speaker 04

The, the, the word on the street is that, yeah, 2026 is.

• 41:32Andrew Manganelli?

Bro, if the 16E costs $600, what is the fold gonna cost?

• 41:36Speaker 01

Two thousand. It's gonna be more expensive than every fold we have now and all the folds we have now are $1,800. Yeah. Unless it's a flip, it could be $1,999.

• 41:46Andrew Manganelli?

  I specifically said passport.

• 41:48Speaker 01

It's going to be a flip, right? Wait, passport?

• 41:51Speaker 05

Well, flip is first, but this rumor he's talking about is from the passport one that's rumored to come out after that.

• 41:57Speaker 01

  Got it.

• 41:57Speaker 04

Can confirm Mark Gurman co-signed this, this report.

• 42:01Speaker 01

  Okay, so final, final guess.

• 42:05Speaker 01

Currently iPhone 16 lineup is 799, 899, 999, 1199. Do we think iPhone 17 goes up by a hundred bucks?

• 42:16Speaker 05

  Hundred dollars.

• 42:17Speaker 01

So that makes the base iPhone 17, 899.

• 42:20Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 42:21Speaker 01

  Then 999, then 1099 and.

• 42:26Andrew Manganelli?

  1299.

• 42:27David Imel?

Or they just say hell with it. And remember when the iPhone 10X was 999? It was like one of the first thousand dollar phones. Everyone made a huge deal about it.

• 42:38Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 42:38David Imel?

Maybe they just moved the baseline up to 999. And then this is 690, this is 599. So then.

• 42:45Speaker 01

  So the gap is bigger?

• 42:45David Imel?

  The gap is bigger.

• 42:47Andrew Manganelli?

If you work at Apple, delete this part from your memory.

• 42:50David Imel?

Yeah, I'm trying not to give them ideas. I just think that's already on the radar.

• 42:54Andrew Manganelli?

Years ago, we called the non-pro version like the new 10R. Like it was like the cheaper version. And now we're talking about potentially starting at a thousand dollars.

• 43:02David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 43:02Andrew Manganelli?

That's wild. I'm gonna go against the grain and say they don't raise the prices this year.

• 43:07David Imel?

  That'd be crazy.

• 43:08Speaker 01

And you think the, do you think the Air is the top price? Or they're gonna slot it in between somehow?

• 43:15Andrew Manganelli?

The Air is the same price as the regular Pro. Isn't that what the Plus is right now?

• 43:20David Imel?

  No.

• 43:21Speaker 01

  It's a hundred dollars cheaper.

• 43:22David Imel?

Right now, it's a hundred bucks more to get the Plus.

• 43:24Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, I'm gonna say it's the same price as the smaller Pro.

• 43:27David Imel?

  And replaces it.

• 43:28Speaker 01

  The price.

• 43:28Andrew Manganelli?

  No, it doesn't replace it.

• 43:29David Imel?

  A hundred dollars.

• 43:30Andrew Manganelli?

  There's 17, 17 Slim, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max.

• 43:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 43:36Andrew Manganelli?

And the two in the middle are the same price.

• 43:38David Imel?

  Are the same price?

• 43:38Speaker 01

  Hmm. Oh, because it's thinner?

• 43:41Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 43:41David Imel?

  Interesting.

• 43:42Andrew Manganelli?

That might be, or a hundred dollars cheaper.

• 43:44David Imel?

I don't think they'll ever do two phones the same price. I think they need to walk you up a ladder and they need to like spread them out.

• 43:48Andrew Manganelli?

Is walking you into Slim a ladder, though? Or is that like a?

• 43:52David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 43:52Andrew Manganelli?

  Or is that like a?

• 43:53David Imel?

I mean, Samsung, I mean Samsung did the Slim and that's, you know.

• 43:59Speaker 01

We don't know the prices of that yet either, though.

• 44:01David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 44:01Andrew Manganelli?

That was just hanging on like a banana stand.

• 44:03David Imel?

  Although.

• 44:05Speaker 05

Wait, I have a question for you guys.

• 44:06David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 44:07Speaker 05

Do you think that the 17 Air or Slim or whatever it's called will also not have MagSafe?

• 44:14Speaker 01

I think that would be a really convenient way to put it right between the E and the baseline phone and have people walk their way up the ladder. Oh, we couldn't fit it in this phone, but MagSafe is like good enough for the thicker phone.

• 44:25David Imel?

Again, the E, the 16E not having MagSafe is getting people primed for, oh, not every iPhone needs MagSafe. They're just gonna throw it in a case anyway. It's fine.

• 44:33Andrew Manganelli?

What if they start putting MagSafe in the case?

• 44:36David Imel?

  I can see it happening.

• 44:37Speaker 01

So in this world, 16E 599, 17 Air 799, 18 899, right? So the two cheaper ones don't have MagSafe and they walk you through the thin one up into the 18s.

• 44:54Andrew Manganelli?

I hate that that would make sense.

• 44:56Speaker 01

Or 17s, yeah. Anyway, all this is speculation. We have no idea what's going on, but we have to keep an eye on it. Go watch the iPhone 16E review if you haven't already. There was also an Amazon event this week.

• 45:07David Imel?

  Yes.

• 45:08Speaker 01

It was not livestreamed, but there was plenty of coverage of it from journalists who did go to the event in New York, where we got the new Alexa, the new Alexa Plus, AI-driven Alexa Plus.

• 45:19David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 45:20Speaker 01

It's generative, it's talkative, it's got a personality, and it's allegedly going to be way better for 20 bucks a month.

• 45:27David Imel?

  Or included with Prime.

• 45:28Speaker 01

Or you have Prime and you get it for free.

• 45:31David Imel?

  Well, included.

• 45:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, included.

• 45:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 45:34Andrew Manganelli?

  I see what you mean.

• 45:35Speaker 01

I already have Prime, so it's free. But yeah, well. Girl math. It's free. I just get it. Yeah.

• 45:44Andrew Manganelli?

I think a big thing Panos seemed to, because we didn't, there was no livestream, like you said, but he talked a lot about how like when you're talking to smart speakers, whether it's Alexa or Google or anything, we kind of like have all developed this language on how to get the correct results from it.

• 45:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 45:59Andrew Manganelli?

And like, I swear they said this last Amazon event, but I remember nothing from the last Amazon event. So generative AI makes sense here because you can be more conversationally based and hopefully it can understand that better. So you don't have to talk like a caveman to your smart speakers.

• 46:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:17Andrew Manganelli?

They talked a lot about why it will be better. They didn't seem to talk a lot about how it's going to work to be better than that. So we'll see.

• 46:23David Imel?

What do you mean by that?

• 46:24Speaker 01

Like the LLMs and all the?

• 46:26Andrew Manganelli?

It just seemed to be a lot like this is, what did Panos say? This is every once in a while you get something, you get a technology that genuinely will change the world.

• 46:39David Imel?

  I guess it's generative AI.

• 46:40Speaker 01

  I guess it's generative.

• 46:41Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, never heard. Um, I think the easiest way to go about this is how we listed out a bunch of examples they gave on what you could ask the new Alexa stuff.

• 46:50David Imel?

  Sure.

• 46:50Andrew Manganelli?

And we'll just go through them all and say if we think they're cool or not, or if you would use them.

• 46:54David Imel?

  Okay.

• 46:55Andrew Manganelli?

Cool. Ask to order groceries for you.

• 46:57David Imel?

  No, would never do that.

• 46:59Andrew Manganelli?

All right. Send event invites to your friends.

• 47:02David Imel?

  Through Apple invites?

• 47:04Andrew Manganelli?

  Probably not.

• 47:05David Imel?

  Through Amazon?

• 47:05Andrew Manganelli?

  Through Amazon invites.

• 47:07David Imel?

What? You can't use it because you don't have Prime. Send Amazon event invites?

• 47:12Andrew Manganelli?

No, no, sorry. It just says event invites.

• 47:13David Imel?

  It's not real Amazon event.

• 47:15Speaker 04

No, the invites come in like that, that bubble wrap.

• 47:19Andrew Manganelli?

No, it comes in a six foot box and it's got a piece of paper in the box and that's it.

• 47:24David Imel?

Yeah, I, I've never asked my smart assistant to do that. I don't think I would.

• 47:31Speaker 01

  No.

• 47:31Andrew Manganelli?

  Cool.

• 47:31David Imel?

  Verify.

• 47:32Andrew Manganelli?

Reference local businesses through Yelp and is able to book dinner reservations.

• 47:37David Imel?

  That, I could do that.

• 47:38Andrew Manganelli?

  I could see that.

• 47:39David Imel?

  I would need to confirm.

• 47:40Speaker 01

All I really care about is, does it actually book it? And is it going to be like at the exact time that I asked for? Cause other than that, what do I care? Like, am I picking a table? There's nothing really else to do. So I just, I feel like.

• 47:50David Imel?

Indoor, outdoor. Yeah, something simple like that.

• 47:53Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 47:54Andrew Manganelli?

That sounds good, except are, are we all still worried that actual hosts is like hosts are gonna pick up the phone and hear a robot and be like, shut up and just.

• 48:01David Imel?

  Well, it's through Yelp, right?

• 48:03Andrew Manganelli?

No, they're just using Yelp as their reference to if you ask about a business.

• 48:07David Imel?

  Wait, it calls for you?

• 48:08Andrew Manganelli?

And then it'll book the reservation afterwards, which I'm assuming is.

• 48:12David Imel?

Wait, it calls for you? It doesn't just do it online, online through an API?

• 48:15Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm not.

• 48:16Speaker 04

I was gonna say, it would make more sense if they use like the, a resy sort of API.

• 48:20David Imel?

That was what the Google Assistant demo did at I O years ago and people freaked the hell out.

• 48:25Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, calls. That's just what I assumed because that's what I'm thinking.

• 48:28Speaker 01

What if it did what Rabbit does and it teaches an L, an L A M to use an app?

• 48:34David Imel?

That actually is, it does do that.

• 48:36Speaker 01

Is that what Alexa's gonna do?

• 48:38David Imel?

They have partners where it will click around on the partner websites to do things for you. It's agentic is what they call it.

• 48:45Speaker 01

Yeah, this is the real future of these AI assistants is them doing things for you.

• 48:50David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 48:50Speaker 01

  Like actions.

• 48:51David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 48:52Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 48:52David Imel?

  Okay.

• 48:52Speaker 01

  Yeah, I like that.

• 48:53David Imel?

  Continue, sorry.

• 48:54Andrew Manganelli?

No, no, don't be sorry. I, I wasn't sure what that was. Uh, I'm gonna skip through, oh, read study guys and test you on answers.

• 49:01David Imel?

  Hell, yeah.

• 49:01Andrew Manganelli?

If you're in school, I think that sounds pretty cool.

• 49:04David Imel?

Unless it just lies to you about.

• 49:07Andrew Manganelli?

  Alexa told me the dinosaurs.

• 49:13Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, here's the one we've all heard before. Research trips and create your itinerary. Oh, I don't think it says book for you.

• 49:21David Imel?

It doesn't say book for you.

• 49:22Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay, cool.

• 49:22David Imel?

  Which is.

• 49:23Andrew Manganelli?

  I'll take that.

• 49:23David Imel?

Hopefully, they learned a lesson from everybody else and realized nobody wants to just blindly book an entire vacation.

• 49:30Speaker 05

Yeah, that makes it actually usable for me.

• 49:33David Imel?

Yeah, because I will never let an AI book it.

• 49:36Speaker 01

Yeah, but it makes a sample itinerary that I can look at and then book accordingly.

• 49:40Andrew Manganelli?

  Yes.

• 49:40Speaker 01

  Or maybe adjusted.

• 49:41Andrew Manganelli?

Okay. Again, I'm going off this of articles that were written probably inside of, while still sitting in their seats, because they didn't live stream this event for whatever reason.

• 49:50David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 49:51Andrew Manganelli?

Find songs with relatively vague descriptions.

• 49:54Speaker 01

  Yeah, like that.

• 49:55Andrew Manganelli?

We could have used that this morning.

• 49:56David Imel?

Google, Google can kind of do that. You can hum songs to Google.

• 50:00Andrew Manganelli?

You can, and it's really good. This morning, it could not find, although I doubt Alexa would have found the royalty-free song you were looking for.

• 50:06Speaker 01

I wasn't that good at humming it.

• 50:07Speaker 05

I was gonna say, I walked in and Marquez and Andrew were just humming a song randomly. I was like, what is happening?

• 50:15Speaker 01

You know that song. Cool feature about Spotify is you can just put in some lyrics and it'll pull the song for you.

• 50:22Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, really?

• 50:22Speaker 01

  In the search bar.

• 50:23David Imel?

  Oh.

• 50:24Speaker 01

Well, that's if you get the lyrics right.

• 50:25Andrew Manganelli?

  That's a good point.

• 50:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 50:27Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. You can jump to a movie scene, which I read they tried to show on stage and it failed multiple times.

• 50:36David Imel?

  Hell, yeah.

• 50:36Speaker 01

I like the idea of that. If you're like referencing something and you want to show it to someone.

• 50:41David Imel?

But how will the clips on YouTube get a zillion views?

• 50:45Speaker 01

I guess they're gonna go to Amazon library stuff.

• 50:47David Imel?

  Prime video?

• 50:48Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, it'd probably only be Prime Video. This would work perfectly for the current season of Love is Blind, which is the most boring season that's ever happened. So just like jump to a good part of it, but I digress.

• 50:59Andrew Manganelli?

This is, this, okay, this is the thing I thought was the coolest. You can ask, has anyone walked the dog today? And it will reference your other smart cameras around your house to see if the dog has been taken out at any point.

• 51:10David Imel?

Specifically Ring cameras, which Amazon owns.

• 51:12Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm assuming.

• 51:13David Imel?

  Yes.

• 51:13Andrew Manganelli?

I'm assuming everything in here is like pretty Amazon specific.

• 51:16Speaker 01

That's another good one if it doesn't hallucinate.

• 51:20David Imel?

Because it's for sure gonna see squirrels outside.

• 51:22Speaker 01

It shows you the video, though.

• 51:24David Imel?

Okay. As long as it cites its sources. If it's like, oh yeah, you walked the dog today. And you're like, okay, great. And it just saw a squirrel walking outside and thought that was the dog, then that would be bad, but okay.

• 51:33Speaker 01

Easier than just being like, Andrew, did you walk the dog today?

• 51:36David Imel?

  Yeah, that's also true.

• 51:38Andrew Manganelli?

I like how you can spend this much time to see if the dog has been walked when you could just take the dog out for the walk really quickly. And if it gets two walks, I'm sure it won't be that upset.

• 51:47David Imel?

No, you can't walk the dog twice, obviously. That's a joke. You can walk your dog twice. It's fine.

• 51:52Andrew Manganelli?

  Encourage it.

• 51:54David Imel?

  I'm glad.

• 51:54Andrew Manganelli?

I think you added the rest of these?

• 51:56David Imel?

Yeah, okay. So it uses both the Amazon Nova model and Anthropic models. Amazon is a major investor in Anthropic, by the way, so that's probably why. Yeah, and then we talked a little bit about it is agentic. So they have partners where if you ask it to do a thing, it will go to the website and click around the website for you and do those things. We'll have to see how well this works. We've seen demos of this from Anthropic before, and it was quite bad. ChatGPT also now has a thing that does this. It is also quite bad. So, you know.

• 52:32Speaker 01

So Rabbit was on to something, but theirs was also quite bad when they first started, but now they're developing it.

• 52:36David Imel?

  Exceptionally bad.

• 52:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 52:38David Imel?

  But, yeah.

• 52:39Speaker 01

  But they were earliest.

• 52:40David Imel?

The other thing is that, like, these are partners. So it will, the Rabbit's problem was that they were like hard coding the destined, the like click locations, and then the website would just like slightly change the UI, and then it stopped working.

• 52:55Speaker 01

They didn't have partners and they tried to do it with AI and make it smart.

• 52:58David Imel?

  Sort of, yeah.

• 53:00Andrew Manganelli?

It's confusing. I feel like they've said a lot of different things, so I don't know.

• 53:03David Imel?

Yeah, Rabbit has just said a lot of things.

• 53:04Andrew Manganelli?

Dispute that or not, but I think the easiest way to say is it didn't work at all.

• 53:08David Imel?

It didn't work at all. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. So because they have these partners, maybe there's a higher chance of it working better. Also, it seems more likely that maybe they would use some sort of computer vision method to actually know what buttons are what. Um, I don't know.

• 53:26Speaker 01

I would argue that if you have partners that you're working directly with, you don't have to teach them anything novel. You just show them how to use your partner's service.

• 53:34David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 53:35Speaker 01

And you don't really need any.

• 53:37David Imel?

But also, I don't necessarily think these partners are gonna be like, every time we update our website at all, we'll let you know and you can update your Alexa thing first. Like, that seems like a lot of work.

• 53:49Speaker 01

  But we're partners.

• 53:50David Imel?

Yeah. Okay, other thing is there is now going to be, Alexa.com is now going to exist as a place for long form work, they say, which I believe is similar to the ChatGPT, like, like long context window where you can sort of tell things, tell it things about you and it'll remember those kind of things. So I think it's just gonna kind of be their version of like a portal where you can do everything. They're also releasing a new phone app that you'll be able to use, similar to the ChatGPT app or the Gemini app.

• 54:20Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 54:21David Imel?

  So.

• 54:21Andrew Manganelli?

  We can bring back the.

• 54:22Speaker 01

  That sounds good.

• 54:23Andrew Manganelli?

  Assistant battle.

• 54:24Speaker 01

  This is always interesting.

• 54:25David Imel?

  Oh, true.

• 54:25Speaker 01

Yeah, the assistant battle's been interesting in the past because we would do like Google Assistant versus Siri. And then we'd also throw in Alexa, but Alexa would be running on like an HTC device that they partnered with. And it's like, it couldn't, it didn't have as much access to reach into the phone and do stuff because Siri plugs in to Apple's OS and Google Assistant plugs in to Android. But Alexa, Alexa couldn't really do that. So it'll be interesting to see what it, that sort of comparison looks like again now. We have Gemini, we have Siri still, although that's still not updated. And we're still waiting to see.

• 54:59David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 55:00Speaker 01

  What that ends up doing.

• 55:01David Imel?

The other thing was that the deep Siri was supposed to be in iOS eighteen point four and it just isn't.

• 55:06Speaker 01

  It's not better.

• 55:07David Imel?

  Well, it's not out yet.

• 55:08Speaker 01

  Right. Yeah, Siri's still bad.

• 55:10David Imel?

It's still bad. The funny thing with Amazon is that Alexa was basically first. Alexa was like the first smart assistant on any of these devices. And then they just lagged so hard and took forever to release these generative models for themselves. Which is kind of ironic when Anthropic has been their partner for a long time. I feel like they could have integrated that faster, but apparently they had problems. So.

• 55:31Speaker 01

Yeah. So I wonder what a ChatGPT versus Alexa versus Gemini versus Siri looks like when they're all at their best on phones.

• 55:40David Imel?

Yeah, that will be fun. Um, yeah. A lot of people were thinking they were also going to announce new hardware at this event because traditionally at these Amazon events, they've just been like,

• 55:50Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 55:50David Imel?

And now the clock has Alexa in it. And now your shaving, your razor has Alexa in it. And never that one year, there were like 200 things.

• 55:57Speaker 01

  Yeah. Here's a toaster. Here's a microwave. Here's a, yeah.

• 56:00David Imel?

  Here's a, here's a wall clock.

• 56:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:02David Imel?

  Here's a toothbrush.

• 56:03Speaker 04

I picture like walking into your kitchen and being like Alexa and like a whole chorus of just like, yes.

• 56:09David Imel?

  Yes.

• 56:10Andrew Manganelli?

It's pretty much like, it's like Toy Story when he closes the door and all of them just like come up.

• 56:16David Imel?

Yeah. So, yeah, I'm excited to test that. I think it'll be cool to, to compare them all against each other.

• 56:22Speaker 01

  Well, speaking of excited.

• 56:27David Imel?

You know, someone, someone mentioned that you stopped doing the segues, so I'm glad you're doing it.

• 56:31Speaker 01

Last week I was on point with the segues. I could have done better this week. Um, but I'm excited for trivia.

• 56:38David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 56:41Speaker 01

  Trivia, dude.

• 56:43Speaker 04

You said you wanted excitement? Well, boy, do I have something for you. Cause this question's about Amazon.

• 56:52Speaker 01

  Woo.

• 56:52Speaker 04

  Thrillings.

• 56:58Speaker 04

In 1999, Amazon acquired a San Francisco based company called Alexa Internet, Inc. What did Alexa Internet, Inc. do?

• 57:11Speaker 01

  Like before they got acquired?

• 57:13Speaker 04

  And after.

• 57:14Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 57:16Speaker 01

  It's 1999.

• 57:17Speaker 04

  In 1999.

• 57:19Speaker 01

  1999?

• 57:20Speaker 04

  Yeah, 1999.

• 57:21Speaker 01

  1999?

• 57:22Speaker 04

  Yeah, 1999.

• 57:24Speaker 01

  1-9-9-9?

• 57:26Speaker 04

  I wasn't born for another 11 years.

• 57:28David Imel?

That's not true. Is it? That's not true. No, I don't believe it. Uh, we'll think about that. Wait, real quick. I just want to tell you a joke. I, I saw this joke on the internet. Someone said, this year, people born in 25 will be 2,000.

• 57:47Speaker 01

  What?

• 57:53Speaker 04

  Feel old yet?

• 57:56Speaker 01

  You gotta scroll so far.

• 57:57David Imel?

Sorry. Okay, you can take it to break.

• 58:00Speaker 01

Well, yeah, we'll be right back.

• 58:15Speaker 01

Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. So AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from. But when that context is scattered across tools like threads and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying kind of blind. That's the problem Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all of these pieces together from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more. So nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping.

All right, welcome back. It is the last day of February as we're publishing this, and it's right before the last day of February as we're recording this, which means it's time to do our Crown or Clown February Edition.

• 1:00:12Andrew Manganelli?

  Crown and Clown.

• 1:00:13Speaker 01

  Crown and Clown.

• 1:00:13Andrew Manganelli?

Someone brought that up, and they were definitely right.

• 1:00:15Speaker 01

Okay, Crown and Clown, where the objective is for each of us to bring a Clown of the Month, and we all have to agree on the worst thing of the month, and a Crown of the Month, where we all must agree on the best thing of the month. Would anybody like to start?

• 1:00:32Andrew Manganelli?

Whoever starts gets to pick if we do Crown or Clown first.

• 1:00:35Speaker 01

Okay, I'll, I'll start. I'll start with the Crown, because I think this one's just fun. Uh, I'm throwing out Rivian's Tan Update. I think it's sick.

• 1:00:47Speaker 04

  As the Crown?

• 1:00:48Andrew Manganelli?

  Out of left field, Marquez.

• 1:00:50Speaker 01

I don't think there is anything negative that anyone could possibly say about it, and therefore, it is my Crown.

• 1:00:57Andrew Manganelli?

If a new color is the coolest thing that happened in February, we had a rough February.

• 1:01:01Speaker 01

It's not just a new color, it's a new trim package. Did you see the seats? You saw the seats.

• 1:01:05Andrew Manganelli?

  They look like Tesla.

• 1:01:06Speaker 01

Also a new color. They look sick.

• 1:01:07Andrew Manganelli?

  Did you see that?

• 1:01:08Speaker 01

New, dual-tone color. So, I want you to see the picture of the seats. They look great.

• 1:01:13Andrew Manganelli?

  They look like Tesla, but?

• 1:01:15Speaker 01

How sick are those seats? New wheel colors, new wheels, new carpet trim, the whole thing. It's great. It's beautiful.

• 1:01:23Andrew Manganelli?

  It looks good.

• 1:01:24Speaker 04

I'm not against you saying that it's a good thing. I just don't know if it's the best thing.

• 1:01:27Speaker 01

Well, I'd love to hear what you guys have that's better than that.

• 1:01:30Speaker 04

This is like, I'm gonna count it as February, even though it may have started like in the last day of January or something, but do you remember that thing, the minimal phone?

• 1:01:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:01:39Speaker 04

That has started shipping to backers.

• 1:01:41Speaker 01

  Let's go.

• 1:01:42Speaker 04

Minimal phone users have the phone in their hands. The e-ink, QWERTY keyboard, Android 14 revolution is upon us. It will be televised, and get ready, world, because

• 1:01:54Speaker 01

  Tubed-ized.

• 1:01:55Speaker 04

We are gonna be emailing like crazy.

• 1:01:58Speaker 01

  Did you buy one?

• 1:02:00Speaker 04

  No.

• 1:02:00Speaker 01

No. Sick. I was gonna say, it's on the exact same level as the Rivian. I also didn't buy one, but we think it's good.

• 1:02:09Speaker 04

I'm gonna buy one right now. Watch me.

• 1:02:10Speaker 01

Oh, that would put it above the Rivian.

• 1:02:12Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, I have one as well, that I am also not gonna buy.

• 1:02:15Speaker 06

  $400?

• 1:02:18Andrew Manganelli?

  He's not buying it.

• 1:02:19Speaker 01

  Not that much.

• 1:02:20Speaker 05

The Oppo Find N5. I think that is the best thing that happened this past month.

• 1:02:26David Imel?

  Cause it's thin.

• 1:02:27Speaker 05

It's so thin and it's so good.

• 1:02:30David Imel?

Do you like, do you, are you using it?

• 1:02:32Speaker 05

  No, Mark has used it.

• 1:02:33David Imel?

Yeah, I don't know if it even came out this month, but I, I kinda do wanna count it. I think it came out this month. Oh, the clown part of that, though.

• 1:02:41Andrew Manganelli?

I, I, this is exactly what I was.

• 1:02:43David Imel?

Is it's not even launching in Europe?

• 1:02:45Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh.

• 1:02:46Speaker 05

Really? I thought there was a global version.

• 1:02:48Andrew Manganelli?

My crown, from clown part of it was gonna be this stupid embargo it had.

• 1:02:52David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:02:53Andrew Manganelli?

Which is annoying and should've never happened.

• 1:02:56David Imel?

It's not even coming to Europe. If the Android Authority article headline is, "The world's thinnest foldable forgot the global part of its global launch."

• 1:03:05Speaker 05

  Ooh, that's a good headline.

• 1:03:06David Imel?

So, yeah, it's only coming to like a couple.

• 1:03:09Speaker 05

  Couple countries, okay.

• 1:03:10Andrew Manganelli?

  That's unfortunate.

• 1:03:11Speaker 05

  But the phone itself, though.

• 1:03:13David Imel?

  Is sick.

• 1:03:14Speaker 05

  Pretty sick.

• 1:03:15David Imel?

  It's so sick.

• 1:03:15Speaker 05

  I think that's fair.

• 1:03:17David Imel?

My clown is the iPhone 16.

• 1:03:21Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, do crown first.

• 1:03:22David Imel?

  We're doing crown fall.

• 1:03:23Andrew Manganelli?

I'm also trying to find a crown right now.

• 1:03:25David Imel?

Oh, oh, I have one. You guys won't care.

• 1:03:29Andrew Manganelli?

  Someone will care.

• 1:03:30David Imel?

  Do it anyway.

• 1:03:30Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 1:03:31David Imel?

This is actually related. Okay, well, sort of, it's a meme. Okay, so in Dota 2, there was this big event that happened for like multiple months and it just ended in February, early February.

• 1:03:44Speaker 05

  It's called winter.

• 1:03:45David Imel?

It was called, it was called Crown Fall, by the way. So it's my crown. It was one of the best events Dota 2 has ever had.

• 1:03:54Andrew Manganelli?

  What did it do?

• 1:03:55Speaker 05

Yeah, what is it? Can you explain this?

• 1:03:56David Imel?

Okay, yeah, so generally in Dota 2, you play these matches and they're like 45 minutes long and it's 5v5 and it's blah, blah, blah. But it basically introduced like, sort of like this like mini game aspect to the matches where you would have to play matches in order to get items to like make your way through like a rogue-like map kind of thing and acquire other things. And they did a really good job with it, lasted a really long time, ended in February, it was called Crown Fall. So that's my crown. You guys probably won't agree, but it was dope.

• 1:04:29David Imel?

  Moving on.

• 1:04:30Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, man, I don't think I have a crown.

• 1:04:33David Imel?

  How about?

• 1:04:34Andrew Manganelli?

I don't know what. Can I just say the Michael Reeves video where he scams a bunch of people on Facebook?

• 1:04:38Speaker 04

Oh, that was a good one.

• 1:04:39Andrew Manganelli?

  It was really good.

• 1:04:41David Imel?

  What was the video?

• 1:04:42Andrew Manganelli?

Um, he built a bunch of bots with generative AI and different personalities to lowball people on Facebook Marketplace. Cause he wanted to eventually buy a motorcycle for cheaper.

• 1:04:53David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:04:53Andrew Manganelli?

Um, and it was pretty awesome. I think one of his biggest, he constantly gets blocked by Facebook though. It has to buy like a bunch of Facebook accounts and spends most of his money buying fake accounts instead. But it's very good. And for Michael Reeves video, it's only like 15 minutes long. So.

• 1:05:11Andrew Manganelli?

That'll be my crown, even though everything else is tech related to it.

• 1:05:14Speaker 04

That's a good video, but the minimal phone gets it though, right, boys?

• 1:05:19David Imel?

  All right, we're agreeing on.

• 1:05:21Andrew Manganelli?

So our, our choices are Dota, Michael Reeves.

• 1:05:24David Imel?

  The Rivian.

• 1:05:25Andrew Manganelli?

The Rivian color. The minimal phone and what was that?

• 1:05:31Speaker 05

  The Apo Find and.

• 1:05:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Apo Find and.

• 1:05:32Speaker 05

  This is a cursed lineup.

• 1:05:34David Imel?

  It's either.

• 1:05:36Andrew Manganelli?

  This is not our best.

• 1:05:37Speaker 04

Are we bad at this? Are we, are we not good?

• 1:05:40Andrew Manganelli?

February is a pretty chill month. It was short, you know?

• 1:05:43Speaker 04

This was not a chill month.

• 1:05:44David Imel?

  What about the Sigma?

• 1:05:45Andrew Manganelli?

Well, yeah, that's what clown will be for. The Sigma camera.

• 1:05:49Speaker 04

  You guys didn't like it.

• 1:05:50David Imel?

  I don't not like it. I just don't.

• 1:05:52Speaker 05

You want to make it your crown?

• 1:05:54David Imel?

No, I don't want to make it my, no, crown fall.

• 1:05:59Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, wait, wait. No, I haven't. The announcement of waveform going to South by Southwest for their first live show.

• 1:06:10Andrew Manganelli?

Well, if this is foreshadowing to our live event.

• 1:06:13Speaker 04

  No, that's whoops.

• 1:06:14David Imel?

  I mean, I, I mean.

• 1:06:15Speaker 04

Oh my God, they're all the same color.

• 1:06:20David Imel?

Well, in March, that will definitely be our crown.

• 1:06:27Andrew Manganelli?

  It will be.

• 1:06:28David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:29Andrew Manganelli?

Let's go through our clown and we'll.

• 1:06:32David Imel?

Maybe come back to crown if we think of something.

• 1:06:34Andrew Manganelli?

I think I'll start with the most obvious clown.

• 1:06:37David Imel?

  Oh.

• 1:06:38Andrew Manganelli?

The end of the humane AI pin. Literally the end because by the time this episode is out, all you will be able to do with that 800 piece is check your batteries.

• 1:06:48David Imel?

  That's true.

• 1:06:49Andrew Manganelli?

Epic. I think that's the pretty obvious one, but I'm open to more of them.

• 1:06:54David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:54Andrew Manganelli?

Well, we're open to more of them because that's what the game is.

• 1:06:58David Imel?

  It's true.

• 1:06:59Andrew Manganelli?

  It's not my choice.

• 1:06:59Speaker 04

Do you guys see the Y Combinator tweet on Monday?

• 1:07:02Andrew Manganelli?

  I did not.

• 1:07:03David Imel?

  Tell me about it.

• 1:07:04Speaker 04

That was my, that was my clown. I don't know when they deleted it, but by Tuesday, it was, it was taken down and it was a promotional video, launch video. I don't really know much about the accelerator world for a company that they're invested in or they're accelerating called Optify. Where the premise is that it uses computer vision to make this like productivity dashboard for factory floors.

• 1:07:32Speaker 04

Seems like reasonable at the outset and the, the video they tweeted were the company's two founders, who are these like college kids, like they're literally still in college. Just like berating someone for not being efficient enough. Like it's essentially like this guy, one of the kids who's like supposed to be like the factory owner.

• 1:07:55Speaker 04

Opens the dashboard and is like, whoa, workstation 17 is really like not doing, not doing well. And so he just like yells, he's like, number 17, what's going on? And then another kid who's supposed to be worker 17 is like, sorry, it's just been like a rough day. The first kid is like, more like a rough month. You haven't hit your quote at all. Whoops.

• 1:08:17Speaker 05

  They posted that?

• 1:08:19Speaker 04

It's, um, it just, you know, we like to joke about sort of a tone deafness coming out of Silicon Valley sometimes. And, and boy, you know, yeah, that, so that's, I think that deserves 10 million clowns. Clown emojis in the chat, fellas.

• 1:08:39Speaker 01

  All right. I have a, I have a clown.

• 1:08:42Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 1:08:42Speaker 01

It's gonna take me a bit of a rant to set this up. I'm ready.

• 1:08:45Speaker 04

  Oh, I'm ready.

• 1:08:46Speaker 01

  But my rant is the...

• 1:08:51Speaker 05

  Do it.

• 1:08:52Speaker 01

Say, it's the, what do you call when like, there's like, inside job and it's like, uh, corrupt, the corruption?

• 1:08:58Speaker 04

  Nepotism?

• 1:08:59Speaker 01

  In the government?

• 1:08:59Speaker 04

  Wrong one.

• 1:09:00Speaker 01

The corruption of Groundhog Day. And folks...

• 1:09:04Speaker 04

Yo, what did they, what did they do to Phil?

• 1:09:06Speaker 01

Punxsutawney Phil. I got a couple of words for Phil the Groundhog. First of all...

• 1:09:10Speaker 05

Wait, wait, wait. You gotta explain what this is for our international listeners.

• 1:09:13Speaker 04

Yeah, people outside of America have no idea.

• 1:09:15Speaker 01

Perfect. I'm glad you're tuning in. Here in the United States, we have a holiday called Groundhog Day.

• 1:09:22Speaker 05

  Holiday is debatable.

• 1:09:23Speaker 01

So, every year since 1887, a Punxsutawney Phil groundhog comes out of the ground and predicts either an early spring or six more weeks of winter. Uh, first of all, 1887, that's a long time for one groundhog to be alive. It's clearly not the same groundhog. It's apparently a lineage of groundhogs that all have the same name that we trust for some reason. Talk about nepotism. We'll get to that. Second, this groundhog is almost never correct.

• 1:09:56Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:09:56Speaker 01

Ever. I just want to point out that the, the inner circle, I'm reading from the Wikipedia for Punxsutawney Phil, because he has one, uh, in keeping with the suspension of disbelief, claims a 100% accuracy rate.

• 1:10:07Speaker 05

  What?

• 1:10:09Speaker 01

Unbiased sources have him pegged around 25 to 35%. Not great. I don't know about you, but if your job saw that, you're doing a 25 to 35% success rate at your, your run task. Wouldn't it be great? I will point out that this year in 2025, Phil predicted six more weeks of winter.

• 1:10:34David Imel?

  No.

• 1:10:35Speaker 01

It is currently 56 degrees outside.

• 1:10:37David Imel?

  Yes.

• 1:10:38Speaker 01

  I don't believe you, Phil.

• 1:10:39Andrew Manganelli?

You didn't see Sunday's forecast, did you?

• 1:10:42Speaker 01

  Hmm, it's like 20 again.

• 1:10:43David Imel?

  It's fine.

• 1:10:44Speaker 01

It's fine. He's wrong, again. So Phil was wrong this year. Uh, I will also point out that he almost always predicts six more weeks of winter. Matter of fact, for a stretch of 30 straight years, he predicted six more weeks of winter. All he's really doing is seeing his shadow. Of course, he sees his shadow. He's a groundhog. For 1903 to 1933, every single year, he said, yeah, six more weeks of winter. I can only imagine how many of those times he was wrong. Uh, this winter, I'll just have you take a guess. Do you think our total snowfall was above or below normal?

• 1:11:21David Imel?

How, what is nor- in, in what range of, of time?

• 1:11:26Speaker 01

This entire winter, uh, the average amount of snowfall that we get in inches.

• 1:11:33Andrew Manganelli?

Versus how many of the last few years?

• 1:11:35David Imel?

Yeah, cuz the last few years, we didn't get like any.

• 1:11:37Speaker 01

Right. So the last few years were below normal.

• 1:11:39Andrew Manganelli?

I would say this was above.

• 1:11:43David Imel?

It was below normal, but it was above the last few years.

• 1:11:46Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:46Speaker 01

It was notably above the last few years, and it was 10 inches below normal.

• 1:11:52David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:52Speaker 01

It was definitely not a heavy snow winter.

• 1:11:55David Imel?

  Correct.

• 1:11:56Speaker 01

Yet here we are, six more weeks of winter from Phil, zero more snow. Phil, you're just wrong all the time. So I'm just gonna, I'm just gonna put all of those things into this one pot. He predicts the same thing every single year. He's almost always wrong. This, this weird nepo thing happening where he has like his lineage picking up the slack, and then they're wrong every time too. And then their accuracy rate being somewhere under 40%. And this, this holiday that we keep celebrating, I just don't understand it. I don't think we should keep doing it anymore. I think we end Groundhog Day. But since we did it again this year, it is my clown of the month.

• 1:12:33Andrew Manganelli?

  You would hate the movie.

• 1:12:35David Imel?

  Oh.

• 1:12:36Speaker 01

I've seen the movie, it's fine.

• 1:12:37Speaker 04

Mark has, I just, you should be, you know, a little bit careful putting that out in public because one of my favorite Groundhog's Day, uh... Fun fact is that the organization that like maintains Puxtoni Phil's borough and checks on him every year and does this whole thing is officially referred to as the inner circle. And they all wear top hats and tuxedos.

• 1:12:58Speaker 01

  I'm not scared of them.

• 1:13:00Speaker 04

They seem like not people and they're right down the street in Pennsylvania, bro. They could be here, they could be here at any second.

• 1:13:06Speaker 01

I've seen the pictures. Those top hats don't scare me, bro. I think it's about time that inner circle.

• 1:13:11Speaker 04

  Catch me up.

• 1:13:12Speaker 05

Phil, come on this podcast and defend yourself.

• 1:13:15Speaker 01

You know where to find me, Phil. Clown of the month.

• 1:13:18David Imel?

All right. That's a good one.

• 1:13:20Speaker 05

You know, I think I'm with you. I was, I was gonna go with Andrew, but hearing that rant, you've convinced me.

• 1:13:26Andrew Manganelli?

What do you think has a better success rate, Puxtoni Phil or the humane pin?

• 1:13:30David Imel?

What is the humane? Oh. What constitutes success?

• 1:13:33Andrew Manganelli?

  The correct answer.

• 1:13:35Speaker 01

  A successful query?

• 1:13:37David Imel?

  Oh.

• 1:13:38Speaker 01

I would say they're probably neck and neck.

• 1:13:41Speaker 05

  Yeah, like 30, 40%?

• 1:13:42Speaker 01

Yeah, 30, 35% sounds about right. Yeah, man.

• 1:13:46David Imel?

How quickly can Phil see his shadow? Because the humane pin took a notably long time to do anything.

• 1:13:53Speaker 01

  Sometimes Phil's dead.

• 1:13:56David Imel?

  Sometimes?

• 1:13:57Speaker 01

Yeah, sometimes they go, time to see what Phil thinks and Phil's dead.

• 1:14:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:03David Imel?

Wait, so does he actually live in the ground?

• 1:14:06Speaker 05

Otherwise he'd just be a regular hog.

• 1:14:09Speaker 01

  It's a groundhog.

• 1:14:10David Imel?

  Nice.

• 1:14:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:12David Imel?

I thought that they would like wine and dine him for the rest of his life.

• 1:14:17Speaker 01

Seems pretty cushy for someone who has a 35% will go percentage.

• 1:14:20Speaker 05

Okay, so what are we deciding? What's the crown? What's the clown?

• 1:14:24Speaker 04

Wait, we only have two. Does anyone have?

• 1:14:27Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, but those are two really good clowns.

• 1:14:29Speaker 01

Yeah, I think so. So clown of the month. I'm going Puxtoni Phil.

• 1:14:35Speaker 05

  Over the humane pin?

• 1:14:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:38David Imel?

They have to work at HP.

• 1:14:42Speaker 01

At least they still have jobs.

• 1:14:43Andrew Manganelli?

  In the printer division.

• 1:14:44Speaker 04

  Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.

• 1:14:46Speaker 01

  Look.

• 1:14:46Speaker 04

What do you think the P stands for?

• 1:14:48Andrew Manganelli?

  Printers. She didn't print.

• 1:14:50Speaker 01

  One of my favorite people.

• 1:14:51Speaker 04

  You made printers!

• 1:14:53Speaker 01

I, that is a tough way to go out, but at least they're going out with some dignity. Phil has never had any.

• 1:14:59David Imel?

I really, but you know what? I give Marquez some points for being so.

• 1:15:03Andrew Manganelli?

I like want to vote for Marquez because.

• 1:15:05David Imel?

  About this groundhog.

• 1:15:06Speaker 01

I just feel a certain way. I've been waiting till February.

• 1:15:08David Imel?

I love the amount of vitriol you have for this groundhog.

• 1:15:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:15:11David Imel?

I think that gains you some points.

• 1:15:12Speaker 04

  I think it's great.

• 1:15:15David Imel?

  The groundhog?

• 1:15:15Speaker 04

  Yeah, I do. I think.

• 1:15:17Speaker 01

What on earth about this groundhog could possibly compel you to say such a thing?

• 1:15:21Speaker 04

Because I just feel like it embodies who we are as a society.

• 1:15:25Speaker 01

  Which is also awful.

• 1:15:26Speaker 04

Yeah. Not just useless and awful, but like as stupid as it literally could possibly be.

• 1:15:34Speaker 01

Yeah. Yeah. Some might say the opposite of correct. Matter of fact, if he just flipped a coin.

• 1:15:39Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:15:40Speaker 01

He'd be right more often. Mind you, his rules are if I see my shadow, then six more weeks of winter.

• 1:15:47Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:15:47Speaker 01

And if I don't see my shadow, it's probably snowing. In which case, early spring. Phil.

• 1:15:54David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:15:55Speaker 01

  What are we doing?

• 1:15:55David Imel?

  Counterpoint.

• 1:15:56Andrew Manganelli?

  Philip.

• 1:15:56David Imel?

Philip. Shouldn't we be blaming the people who made the rules? Cause he, whether or not he sees his shadow.

• 1:16:02Speaker 01

  Whole organization.

• 1:16:03David Imel?

He's not like, I will look at my shadow and communicate to the people.

• 1:16:07Speaker 01

Well, that's what they say he does. In fact, they say he writes it on a scroll.

• 1:16:10Speaker 04

  In a language called groundhog-ies.

• 1:16:12Speaker 01

Yeah, it's a lot. Dude, the more you look into this.

• 1:16:15David Imel?

  Where does this come from?

• 1:16:15Speaker 01

  It's horrible.

• 1:16:16Speaker 04

  It's lit!

• 1:16:17Speaker 01

  It's awful.

• 1:16:17Speaker 04

  He lives in Gobbler's Knob!

• 1:16:20Speaker 01

There's no one, there's no good things about this groundhog.

• 1:16:24Speaker 04

He lives in Gobbler's Knob! No!

• 1:16:25Speaker 01

By the way, the groundhog is probably not even thinking or doing anything. It's just against his will, being held up into the air and blamed for the incorrect.

• 1:16:31David Imel?

  That's what I'm saying.

• 1:16:33Speaker 01

And I think that by itself is awful too.

• 1:16:36Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:16:36Speaker 01

There's just nothing good. Nothing good here. Clown, you might say.

• 1:16:39Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm gonna vote groundhog day.

• 1:16:41Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 1:16:41Andrew Manganelli?

So we can get to trivia?

• 1:16:42Speaker 04

I will never turn my back on that groundhog. I'm sorry.

• 1:16:46David Imel?

  So you're HP humane pen?

• 1:16:48Speaker 04

Uh, no, I'm gonna give it to YC.

• 1:16:52David Imel?

  Oh.

• 1:16:53Speaker 04

  But.

• 1:16:53David Imel?

I'll go with the groundhog just to move us along.

• 1:16:55Speaker 04

  It seems like groundhog wins.

• 1:16:56Speaker 01

  Groundhog by commission.

• 1:16:58Andrew Manganelli?

All right, we will, we will try and workshop Crown and Clown a little better.

• 1:17:02Speaker 05

We also have to pick the crown.

• 1:17:03Speaker 01

  I think it's the N5.

• 1:17:05Andrew Manganelli?

  I like the N5 also.

• 1:17:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:17:07David Imel?

  The other options.

• 1:17:09Speaker 04

  The minimalist phone.

• 1:17:11Speaker 05

  Or Dota.

• 1:17:16David Imel?

  It was called Crowdfall.

• 1:17:18Andrew Manganelli?

That was the name of the event.

• 1:17:20Speaker 05

Alright, so official crown, Oppo N5, official clown, Groundhog Day.

• 1:17:26David Imel?

  Sure.

• 1:17:26Speaker 01

  Alright, there it is.

• 1:17:27Speaker 04

  Thank you, February.

• 1:17:29Speaker 01

  It's time for trivia.

• 1:17:34Speaker 05

  Trivia, dude, so.

• 1:17:36David Imel?

  David shooting like 90%.

• 1:17:38Speaker 05

  Seriously.

• 1:17:39David Imel?

  It's crazy.

• 1:17:39Speaker 05

After taking away Marquez and Andrew's points from last week.

• 1:17:43David Imel?

  Dude, his lead is.

• 1:17:44Speaker 05

  Quick update on the score.

• 1:17:45David Imel?

There's no way I blow this lead.

• 1:17:46Speaker 05

Marquez with five, Andrew with three, David with 10. Double-digit David.

• 1:17:56David Imel?

  Unbelievable.

• 1:17:56Speaker 05

  Alright.

• 1:17:57Speaker 04

  Double D.

• 1:17:57David Imel?

You're carrying the one in the two spot, nevermind.

• 1:18:00Speaker 05

Okay, question number one. In 2014, invites were first given out through a promotion known as Smash the Past, in which 100 users would be selected to win the opportunity to purchase for $1 which smartphone?

• 1:18:18David Imel?

Can we just do the brand?

• 1:18:21Speaker 05

  No.

• 1:18:21David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:18:22Speaker 04

How about we do one point for brand, two points for phone, three points for any additional specifics? Just so we can try to even these scores.

• 1:18:32Andrew Manganelli?

What are the additional specifics? It was a Monday.

• 1:18:35Speaker 04

You tell me. You tell me, tech boy.

• 1:18:38David Imel?

  It was 47 degrees Fahrenheit.

• 1:18:42Speaker 05

Puxitoni Phil just saw his shadow.

• 1:18:45Speaker 05

Flipperman Reed, what do you got?

• 1:18:48Speaker 05

  David, you go first.

• 1:18:49David Imel?

Oh, you're probably right. I put Nokia 3310.

• 1:18:53Speaker 05

Nope. How do you smash that?

• 1:18:54David Imel?

Well, it smashes things when you drop it.

• 1:18:56Speaker 05

How about OnePlus X? Half, right? One point, yeah. Marquez.

• 1:19:01Speaker 01

Yeah, it was a OnePlus 1.

• 1:19:02Speaker 05

  That's all the points.

• 1:19:03Speaker 01

It was OnePlus 1. I remember this. They had so much backlash because people would smash their phone and then not win a new phone.

• 1:19:09David Imel?

  Oh, I remember this.

• 1:19:10Speaker 05

Andrew got one point, Marquez got two points.

• 1:19:12Speaker 01

  That's an insane event.

• 1:19:13Speaker 05

  Oh, that's the OnePlus X?

• 1:19:14David Imel?

  Two points.

• 1:19:15Speaker 01

Yeah, the OnePlus X was, they're like little ceramic.

• 1:19:18Speaker 05

  Oh, wait, no.

• 1:19:22Speaker 04

  What about my lead?

• 1:19:23Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, yeah. I don't know why I thought the-

• 1:19:25Speaker 04

  My Diet Doctor lead?

• 1:19:27Andrew Manganelli?

I tried to pick the first one and for some reason I thought the X was the first one.

• 1:19:30Speaker 07

No, the X was like their cheap model once they started not being as-

• 1:19:34Speaker 04

I'm only gonna call it Twitter.

• 1:19:36Andrew Manganelli?

So this is 2015, so it wasn't far off.

• 1:19:39David Imel?

It was in the beginning, like, they tried to do like a cheap one and an expensive one, so the OnePlus X was cheaper and the OnePlus, I guess, 2 or 3 or whatever was-

• 1:19:48Speaker 07

  OnePlus 3 was fire.

• 1:19:51Speaker 04

Question number 2. In 1999, Amazon acquired a San Francisco-based company called Alexa Internet Inc. What did Alexa Internet Inc. do?

• 1:20:02David Imel?

  1999 is nuts.

• 1:20:04Speaker 04

Yeah. There wasn't even like TV.

• 1:20:12Speaker 04

  Nothing.

• 1:20:14David Imel?

  There wasn't TV?

• 1:20:20Speaker 07

Wow. It took me a little bit. I was thinking.

• 1:20:25Andrew Manganelli?

  What did they do?

• 1:20:26Speaker 04

  What did they do?

• 1:20:28Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, I don't know.

• 1:20:32Speaker 04

Ooh, ooh. Alright, who wants to go first?

• 1:20:36Andrew Manganelli?

  Three very different answers.

• 1:20:38David Imel?

I'm wrong, I'll go first. I said music streaming.

• 1:20:40Speaker 04

  That is not correct.

• 1:20:42Andrew Manganelli?

  I said scheduling.

• 1:20:43Speaker 04

  That is also not correct.

• 1:20:45David Imel?

  Put voice recognition software.

• 1:20:46Speaker 04

That is not correct, unfortunately. The correct answer-

• 1:20:49Andrew Manganelli?

It was the closest, closest Delta.

• 1:20:52David Imel?

  Is it a browser?

• 1:20:53Speaker 04

  Closest Delta would-

• 1:20:55David Imel?

Is that a browser company? Internet Inc.?

• 1:20:58Speaker 04

It, uh, they did web traffic analysis. Oh! I was gonna put that!

• 1:21:04David Imel?

I totally forgot about, okay, Alexa.

• 1:21:08Andrew Manganelli?

  Wow, Alexa rankings.

• 1:21:08David Imel?

  Yeah, rankings.

• 1:21:09Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, that Alexa.

• 1:21:11Speaker 04

Maybe. I don't know what you're talking about.

• 1:21:12Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, yeah, there used to be Alexa rankings for every website.

• 1:21:14David Imel?

Yeah, you know, is it SimilarWeb? I don't know. Yeah, Alexa ranking, when I worked at Android Authority, every month, we would like look at our Alexa ranking to see if we were like bigger or smaller than our competitors.

• 1:21:26Andrew Manganelli?

  Wow.

• 1:21:27David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:28Andrew Manganelli?

  Damn, I forgot about that.

• 1:21:29David Imel?

  That was crazy.

• 1:21:29Andrew Manganelli?

So yeah, nothing to do with Alexa, but-

• 1:21:31David Imel?

  I totally forgot about that.

• 1:21:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Wait, Amazon bought that company?

• 1:21:33David Imel?

  Yeah, Amazon owned them.

• 1:21:35Speaker 04

They owned them the whole time.

• 1:21:37Andrew Manganelli?

But they began a partnership with Google in 2002?

• 1:21:39David Imel?

  That's weird.

• 1:21:41Speaker 04
