iPhone 16E: What Does the “E” Mean?

This week is a classic gadget week on Waveform! Marques, Andrew, and David discuss the new iPhone 16E, HP buying Humane, the Nothing Phone 3A, the Rivian announcement we were all waiting, and a few other stories. Of course, we wrap it all up with trivia. P. S: we're headed to Austin! If you're going to be at SXSW in March we'll be doing a live show so come say hi! Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from. But when that context is scattered across tools, threads, and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying blind. That's the problem that Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all these pieces together from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping. Learn more at jira.com.

• 1:23Speaker 01

  That's J-I-R-A dot com.

• 1:25David Imel?

Ooh, Apple polishing cloth is officially compatible with the iPhone 16.

• 1:28Andrew Manganelli?

Yes. They did it. They did. Another successful launch, folks. Engineering. R&D doesn't just happen. Okay. Do you think there's a singular job that's just update the Apple polishing cloth? Yeah.

• 1:43Speaker 04

I'm a project manager on the polishing cloth.

• 1:53Speaker 01

What is up people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts. I'm Marquez.

• 1:58Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm Andrew.

• 1:58David Imel?

  And I'm David.

• 1:59Speaker 01

This week, we have some real announcements that happened before we recorded, which is very exciting. Matter of fact, we just jumped in here directly after watching, what is it, like a 12-minute video that Apple put out with the iPhone 16e? So that came out. We also have a new Rivian announcement. Hint: Someone was right last week. And we also have a couple of other small things, like Humane was sold, Reddit's charging for some stuff, and a first look at the Nothing 3A. But first, Andrew has written that Google Tasks now has a web app.

• 2:32Andrew Manganelli?

What might be the shortest story in the history of Waveform ever. You can now go to a dedicated webpage with your Google Tasks.

• 2:41Speaker 01

Are we sure this is new?

• 2:42Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 2:43Speaker 01

Because I feel like I've been doing this for weeks.

• 2:44Andrew Manganelli?

So what you can do is you can, like previously, it would be on the sidebar of your Gmail.

• 2:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:50Andrew Manganelli?

In the exact, it would look exactly like that, but now it can just be in its own dedicated webpage.

• 2:54David Imel?

I could have been using this webpage for the last like month and a half.

• 2:58Speaker 01

Pre-alpha. No, that just means someone at Google remembered that it exists, and that's very encouraging. Like, Google Tasks is, it's on the radar.

• 3:07Andrew Manganelli?

So there's two things I was excited for. It was, I can float my own window on the side of my desktop, which has just my tasks in like, vertical, which is nice. And the second thing, which is like, wait, they remembered. This is one step to maybe new features, if anything, not a step backwards to Oblivion.

• 3:24Speaker 01

Yeah, maybe they'll add some stuff.

• 3:26Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, that's good. That's it.

• 3:27David Imel?

I tried to check the Wayback Machine, but it's not, it's down. So I have no way to know whether or not, maybe I had early access to this.

• 3:36Speaker 01

I guess we'll never know. This week also, HP spent $116 million, which actually was the most shocking part to me. I didn't know HP was out here spending money like that. And they used it to buy Humane. Humane finally got their wish and was acquired. Maybe not the way they originally drew it up, but it happened. They shut down the PIN, it is going offline, the servers will go down, they're shutting down the team that developed it, it's not going to be a thing anymore. RIP Humane PIN. But yeah, HP is acquiring... The talent and the engineers and the team.

• 4:14Andrew Manganelli?

  The technology behind.

• 4:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:16Andrew Manganelli?

There was like 300 patents from the company and like Cosmos.

• 4:21Speaker 01

  Cosmo S.

• 4:21Andrew Manganelli?

  Mo S.

• 4:22Speaker 05

  Great name.

• 4:24Andrew Manganelli?

It's actually a pretty solid name.

• 4:25Speaker 05

  No, it's Cosmo S.

• 4:27Speaker 01

Cosmo S. Yeah, it's like, okay, this depends on the stop working. So everyone who said it was bad is justified in saying it was bad because it doesn't exist anymore. But it's also like, uh, what does HPC see in that? I don't, I don't know.

• 4:43David Imel?

Apparently Emron and Bethany are going to work at HP to upgrade their AI systems and their conference room software.

• 4:52Speaker 01

This comes back to HP. What, what does HP do? I kinda, my, the first thing I ever reviewed was an HP product. So I'm not like a HP hater. I kinda like.

• 5:00Andrew Manganelli?

No, we, we were just looking back on, uh, HP market cap and right after you made that video, they skyrocketed.

• 5:07Speaker 01

It's, yeah, I believe that 2009 was probably peak of HP's powers. I bought an HP Pavilion DV70. It was very competitive. It's the one I picked over all my other options and that was not a cheap laptop. They had a thing back in the day.

• 5:19Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 5:19Speaker 01

  But today.

• 5:21Speaker 05

  They're launching a Zoom competitor.

• 5:23Speaker 01

  HP?

• 5:24Speaker 05

  No, I have no idea.

• 5:25Speaker 01

  No.

• 5:26David Imel?

Did I tell you guys when I thought that I may have uncovered a money laundering scheme at Intel?

• 5:31Speaker 05

At Intel, yeah. But retell the story. Cause that was a while ago.

• 5:36Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 5:36Andrew Manganelli?

  Allegedly.

• 5:38Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 5:38David Imel?

This is probably not what is happening.

• 5:43Speaker 01

  However.

• 5:43David Imel?

However, okay, when I worked at Intel, I wrote software that would check, uh, basically there was these giant sleds of computers, right? Because they use the Zeons, which have two Zeons per sled. There's tons of sleds in a rack. Intel buys those racks from HP, Compaq, Lenovo, Dell, right? All these companies where I'm like, they technically sell laptops, but there's no way that's how they make most of their money, right? So Intel would buy these giant racks for like a ton of money with like 15 year warranties.

• 6:16Speaker 01

  Rack city.

• 6:17David Imel?

Because they're running these computers at such like high wattage and so much power that like parts break a lot, right? So the money, the money laundering scheme that I thought I uncovered.

• 6:28David Imel?

  This is probably not happening.

• 6:31David Imel?

Is that the software, when I wrote the software, it would basically every morning, check every single part in every single sled. So it checked the RAM, the CPU, like everything on the computer. The things that would break the most often were the Intel Xeon's and the Intel developed RAM chips. And the reason I thought it was money laundering scheme was because I, it seemed like Intel was putting their like B-list Xeon's in these computers that HP was then selling to Intel as a rack. And then HP, under warranty, when they would

• 7:13David Imel?

break, because my software basically would say like, every single day there was Xeon's breaking, there was RAM sticks breaking, and it was always Intel developed parts. So it seemed like HP then had to go back to Intel and buy new parts from Intel to put in the thing that they got, that they sold to Intel. And it just sort of felt like they were cycling money like this.

• 7:36Andrew Manganelli?

I feel like this feels like the McDonald's ice cream machine, where it's like, it's broken and they also kind of run the place.

• 7:44David Imel?

Compaq. What else does Compaq do? This is the thing.

• 7:48Speaker 04

  His, well now?

• 7:51David Imel?

Well, I mean, at the time, still, it was like 2016, Compaq was not.

• 7:55Speaker 01

I don't think TD commercials sold laptops.

• 7:58Speaker 04

Compaq wasn't around in 2016. Compaq got bought by HP in 2008.

• 8:05Speaker 01

Yeah, HP Compaq became the thing.

• 8:06Andrew Manganelli?

The easy answer here is they all do a lot of enterprise stuff that we just don't quite know of.

• 8:12David Imel?

They, yeah, okay, so what did they do? They were selling giant racks of sleds to companies like Intel, and that is probably how they make most of their money. That's the answer to your question.

• 8:24Speaker 04

You think people aren't buying the Pavilion?

• 8:27David Imel?

More like Pavilion, okay. Got them. So that's probably how they make most of their money.

• 8:32Speaker 01

Yeah, so yeah, they figured they've got 116 million to spend on acquiring Humane. Humane gets kind of their wish. Not exactly the way they drew it up, but at least it's something. Yeah. I just canceled my Humane subscription today.

• 8:46David Imel?

  Wait.

• 8:47Speaker 01

I was paying every month in hopes of seeing it improve. It didn't. It did a little, but not enough to, you know, make another video or anything. Uh, I canceled it today.

• 8:57David Imel?

Did you really just, did you actually just forget?

• 8:59Speaker 01

  No, yes.

• 9:02Speaker 01

Yes. But I was given it a chance.

• 9:04David Imel?

  Yeah, that's fair.

• 9:05Andrew Manganelli?

We still have it. It's, I know exactly where it is. Yeah. So, you know, they raised about 230 million. They sold it for 116 million.

• 9:14Speaker 01

  It was more.

• 9:14Andrew Manganelli?

A few months ago, they were reportedly trying to sell it between like 700 to 1 billion.

• 9:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:21Andrew Manganelli?

I believe. So this is quite a bit lower. This is actually approximately one seventh of Juan Soto's MLB contract. That, um, they just got sold for, yeah. And I can't help but think, I think we all know Humane is that company that, um, hyped themselves without a public facing product for a very long time. And it feels kind of like they did that for longer than they had an actual public facing product.

• 9:45Speaker 01

  That's probably true.

• 9:46David Imel?

Yeah, because it came out a year ago.

• 9:48Andrew Manganelli?

  Less than a year.

• 9:49Speaker 01

And they were hyping it for a while. They're, they're in stealth mode.

• 9:52Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, they've been around since 2018. And I know like every startup company has a product they're working on before that, but like they were out there hyping up humane publicly without their public product.

• 10:04Speaker 01

  For a long time.

• 10:05Andrew Manganelli?

For, for far longer than we actually had the pin.

• 10:07Speaker 01

So if you are a humane, a fellow humane pin owner like myself, expect it to be a brick by the end of the month. It will still be able to tell you if it's overheating or what your battery.

• 10:18David Imel?

I was gonna say, it's not just a brick. It could also catch on fire.

• 10:21Speaker 01

It could, it could tell you if it's about to, and it can tell you how much battery life is left. Cause that was the things that it was doing offline and it continued. Yeah.

• 10:30David Imel?

You know what's also kind of crazy? So they will give people refunds only if you bought it within the last 90 days, which is the normal refund period. But they're not giving anybody else refunds. And this product only existed for like less than a year.

• 10:43Speaker 01

  Hey, man, that's the risk.

• 10:44David Imel?

  It's a $700 pin.

• 10:46Speaker 01

  That's the early adopter risk.

• 10:48David Imel?

That's a lot of money for something that lasts 10 months.

• 10:50Andrew Manganelli?

  Reddit.

• 10:51Speaker 01

If only there was like people who told you not to buy.

• 10:55David Imel?

  We did our job.

• 10:57Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 10:57David Imel?

  Yelled at for it.

• 10:58Speaker 05

They all should have bought a rabbit.

• 11:01Speaker 01

  What do you think?

• 11:03Andrew Manganelli?

I was just gonna say the subreddit is not happy about this, obviously. It's it's one thing when they like launched the email saying we're winding down and then like at the end, it's like, and everything will be offline February 28th, which is like a week and a half from right now. So and then that also means somebody asked them and somebody responded, no, there are some offline things it can do, like tell you your battery level.

• 11:29Speaker 01

Can it tell me the time?

• 11:29Andrew Manganelli?

  No, it's literally brick.

• 11:31Speaker 01

  Tell me the time.

• 11:31Andrew Manganelli?

  How?

• 11:32David Imel?

  How?

• 11:32Speaker 01

  It's gotta.

• 11:33David Imel?

  Does the projector still work?

• 11:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:36Andrew Manganelli?

It should say the time. Battery level.

• 11:38David Imel?

So maybe it's just like a lapel.

• 11:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:41David Imel?

  Clock?

• 11:41Speaker 01

  Clock. Yeah.

• 11:42David Imel?

  That's kinda dope.

• 11:43Speaker 01

  You know what?

• 11:43David Imel?

If I got it for free, but I don't know if I'd charge that.

• 11:45Speaker 05

Remember when the Spotify car thing went out and I came on this podcast and we spoke about them open sourcing it?

• 11:51David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 11:51Speaker 05

And how great of a community that has turned into.

• 11:54David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 11:55Speaker 05

I hope they open source the humane pin. Probably not.

• 11:58Speaker 01

  They're shutting it down.

• 11:59Andrew Manganelli?

But I was thinking of that all morning.

• 12:01Speaker 05

  Sick.

• 12:01Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. That's what the Reddit, the subreddit is asking to open source it so people can tinker with it. I just, I think there's way more complicated parts in this. I mean, we did get to see the inside of it and that thing is complicated.

• 12:12David Imel?

I don't think they can open source it because all the patents got sold to HP.

• 12:16Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, that would probably be my thought on why they they're not gonna let a lot happen to them.

• 12:22Speaker 05

Well, in six years, just like Pebble, we'll go back and ask HP to open source all this. So hold on to it.

• 12:27David Imel?

  Yeah. I guess.

• 12:29Speaker 05

  Because you never know.

• 12:30David Imel?

Hold on to your brick that might catch on fire.

• 12:32Andrew Manganelli?

  I have a hot take.

• 12:33David Imel?

  What?

• 12:34Andrew Manganelli?

We're gonna turn, we're gonna think back on this the way that people think about Google Glass.

• 12:38David Imel?

  No. No, we're not.

• 12:40Andrew Manganelli?

That's why I said it was hot.

• 12:41David Imel?

  That's highly hot.

• 12:43Andrew Manganelli?

  Spicy.

• 12:44David Imel?

  That's really hot.

• 12:45Speaker 05

Eventually, this is the future, right?

• 12:47Andrew Manganelli?

Do you mean form factor wise?

• 12:48Speaker 05

No, I mean just an AI assistant thing that you wear.

• 12:52Andrew Manganelli?

  They're not the only.

• 12:52Speaker 01

If you want to go super broad and say a standalone AI device was ahead of its time, sure.

• 12:58Andrew Manganelli?

  That is where I'm going.

• 12:59Speaker 01

But that's about as generous as you can be. Yeah, I think I think we'll all look back at the humane pin as being like, oh, that wasn't ready. Why did they ship that? That was bad.

• 13:07David Imel?

Just like we looked at it while it was out.

• 13:10Speaker 01

And Google Glass had some real, some, some- Google Glass was fire as heck. It could come out today and be looked at kinda the same as back in the day. I would still like Google Glass currently.

• 13:21Speaker 05

  Cause you're a glass hole.

• 13:22Speaker 01

I was. Speaking of glass, uh, do you know what sand is made of? Well, glass is made of sand.

• 13:32Speaker 01

  I got it backwards. Yeah.

• 13:34Speaker 05

  Fire segue though.

• 13:36Andrew Manganelli?

I knew where you were going.

• 13:36Speaker 01

  Almost nailed that.

• 13:37Speaker 05

I knew where you were going.

• 13:38Speaker 04

Sand is actually the remnants of ancient window factories that they used to only put on the beach.

• 13:44Speaker 05

  For dinosaurs.

• 13:45Speaker 04

Yeah, for dinosaurs. But when you made a window, you needed to test it. So you're like, oh hey, we should look at the beach cause it's really pretty.

• 13:50Speaker 01

Yeah. Yeah. Well, speaking of sand, since we're on the topic, um, Rivian made an announcement this week. You remember last week on the podcast, we saw a bunch of pictures of sand dunes from Rivian and they were teasing something to be announced on the 19th? Or recording this on the 19th and we know what it was. Let's just revisit what we thought might be coming. They're probably gonna announce a sand colored Rivian.

• 14:13Andrew Manganelli?

A khaki Rivian would be pretty sweet. I'd be into that. I want it to be R2D. I want it to be the Maverick Rivian.

• 14:22Speaker 01

We should place bets, but there's just no way.

• 14:24Speaker 05

  Sand color.

• 14:25Speaker 01

I'm going with either special event or sand mode.

• 14:28Speaker 05

So you're saying sand mode. David, you're saying sand color.

• 14:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 14:32Speaker 05

  Andrew, what are you saying?

• 14:36Andrew Manganelli?

Rivian, uh, what is it called? Rivian Adventure Network?

• 14:40Speaker 01

  Yeah, so, uh-

• 14:41Speaker 05

  Feels good.

• 14:41Speaker 01

David was right. It is a, he's close, you're close, you're the closest. It's a new trim package for the Rivian, R1T and R1S, and it's a limited edition trim, but it's called the California Dune Edition. It is in fact, sand colored. So you'll get the paint. Thank you very much. You'll get the point for that. Um, there's a couple other things as well, from what I can see from these pictures. There are new 20 inch all terrain wheels. It'll come with a spare tire, a reinforced underbody shield, a couple other- There's some- Sand colored things.

• 15:12Andrew Manganelli?

Available accessories. One of them is Max Trax recovery boards, which are those like boards where you're stuck in deep snow or sand.

• 15:19Speaker 01

Some of these you can already get. It'll just come with these accessories. Like the dark, I've thought about getting the dark crossbars for forever, cause mine came with light crossbars and I was like, oh, I want the black ones. But I haven't bought them.

• 15:29Andrew Manganelli?

Come with them? I just saw, it just said new range of accessories. So I wasn't a hundred percent sure if that-

• 15:33Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 15:34Andrew Manganelli?

Came with it or just like-

• 15:36Speaker 01

That's a good question, but I would believe it comes with these because they've existed already. The revised powered tonal cover, they've had to re sort of engineer that over time and I also have had mine replaced. So all of these things will be included, I believe. And then there's no release date yet, but it seems like we'll get to see one at South by Southwest in March. Is anybody gonna go to that? I don't know. South by Southwest? I heard that Waveform might be doing a live episode there, though. Oh, I saw that, too. Oh, I would go to that. Oh, do you want to go? We can just all go together.

• 16:11Andrew Manganelli?

Do you want to go? Is this the invite right now?

• 16:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 16:12Andrew Manganelli?

I thought I'd get it on party full, but.

• 16:14Speaker 01

No. No, we started. We've used Apple invites.

• 16:18Andrew Manganelli?

  That's right.

• 16:20Speaker 01

Okay, Bet, so how about we all go to South by Southwest? We'll do a live Waveform show while we're there. Sounds good. And we'll go check out the sand colored Rivian.

• 16:29Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm just gonna throw, let's try Saturday 11 a.m., March 8.

• 16:32Speaker 01

  10 a.m.?

• 16:33Andrew Manganelli?

Does that work for you all?

• 16:34Speaker 01

  I thought it was 10 a.m.

• 16:35Speaker 04

I'm down, but I'll leave it at the Vox Media showcase.

• 16:37Speaker 01

Oh. I'll, I could do that.

• 16:41Speaker 04

  Game?

• 16:41Speaker 01

I think we can find a way to get there.

• 16:43Speaker 04

  Alright, sweet.

• 16:44Speaker 01

Should we invite anyone else or no? How about the audience?

• 16:47Speaker 04

  Yeah, no, they should come.

• 16:48Speaker 01

  True.

• 16:49Speaker 04

  They should come.

• 16:50Speaker 01

Okay, yeah. So y'all, so if you're watching this, you're invited too. Yeah, see you there. Bingo! Sick. We're so good at transition.

• 16:59Andrew Manganelli?

  That was, that was rough.

• 17:00Speaker 01

The most natural transition you've ever heard. Use your AI assistant to distill what we just said.

• 17:05Speaker 04

  Guys, please come.

• 17:07Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, we are gonna, it's our first live Waveform event.

• 17:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:10Andrew Manganelli?

It's gonna be on the Vox stage. It's gonna be, I think, the first, we're the first program on the Vox stage. It's Saturday, March 8 at 11 a.m. We will be there. We will be recording it and releasing it as a bonus pod episode. It won't be broadcast live, but it will be live there. And we're still trying to figure some ways out to involve the audience as much as possible because we've never had that chance.

• 17:31Speaker 01

  Maybe comments section.

• 17:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Yes, please.

• 17:33Speaker 01

Let us know if you have cool ideas for what we should do at South by Southwest as we record live with an audience next to us who could interact with the podcast.

• 17:43Speaker 05

I have a question for you guys. You know in school when there was like a group project and the teacher would be like, okay, who wants to go first? Did you guys always volunteer to go first or were you hoping to go last?

• 17:53David Imel?

  I always went first.

• 17:54Speaker 05

  I always went first too.

• 17:55Speaker 01

I was always hoping to go last.

• 17:57Speaker 05

  You're hoping to go last?

• 17:58David Imel?

  Interesting. Ellis is the tiebreaker.

• 17:59Speaker 04

  Ellis.

• 18:00Speaker 01

Wait, the question is. Everyone in class has a little poster board. We're all gonna do a presentation. Who wants to go first? Oh, how good is my presentation? You, that's a great question.

• 18:12David Imel?

  Very mid.

• 18:13Speaker 05

  First.

• 18:14Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 18:15Andrew Manganelli?

  Can I ask why?

• 18:16David Imel?

  Actually, first doesn't matter what.

• 18:17Speaker 01

Forgotten about by the time the worst ones come along.

• 18:20Speaker 05

Okay, also you get to set the tone.

• 18:22Speaker 01

Yeah, exactly. If it's bad, there's not a good one before you to make you look bad.

• 18:27Andrew Manganelli?

  Exactly.

• 18:27Speaker 01

So. But it's possible that you do the bad first one and then the second one is way better.

• 18:32David Imel?

  Yeah, but everyone will forget.

• 18:34Andrew Manganelli?

  Exactly.

• 18:34Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 18:35David Imel?

They'll remember the new one, they'll forget the bad one.

• 18:37Andrew Manganelli?

My theory was always, it's a presentation, so it'll probably take longer than that period. So if I pray for last, I might be able to fix all the things I didn't actually do and then go the next day.

• 18:49David Imel?

That did happen before to me.

• 18:51Speaker 01

  I've done that, yeah.

• 18:51David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 18:52Speaker 01

  Good call.

• 18:53David Imel?

Yeah. Also, just getting it over with is nice.

• 18:55Speaker 01

We are going first at South By, so.

• 18:57David Imel?

  Okay.

• 18:58Speaker 01

So, yeah, we'll have to bring the heat, set the tone.

• 19:00David Imel?

  Setting the tone.

• 19:01Speaker 01

  Make it awesome.

• 19:01David Imel?

  The tone.

• 19:02Speaker 01

And you guys should bring the, bring the heat too, it'll be fun.

• 19:04Speaker 05

And if you're sitting in the first three rows.

• 19:06Andrew Manganelli?

  Wear a poncho.

• 19:10Speaker 01

  Wear a poncho?

• 19:12Speaker 05

  Yeah, it's like Sea World.

• 19:13Speaker 01

We're setting the bar as high as we can. As high as we can. Expect fireworks.

• 19:18Speaker 05

You know, Shamu will be there.

• 19:20Speaker 01

Can I just say, this Rivian looks sick.

• 19:22Andrew Manganelli?

Well, yeah, I did want to go back to it.

• 19:23Speaker 01

  It looks sick.

• 19:24Speaker 05

  Really?

• 19:25Andrew Manganelli?

Wait, it's a good, we didn't say how good the color was. This is like my favorite trend in vehicle colors they've been doing lately.

• 19:32Speaker 01

  Sand in general?

• 19:33Andrew Manganelli?

Like khaki-ish, kind of the, I don't want to call it dull, because it's very clearly still like shiny.

• 19:39Speaker 01

It's like right up Rivian's alley, like with the other colors they've done.

• 19:42Andrew Manganelli?

Cross, the Subaru Crosstech was doing it for a little bit and with the like black wheel wells, the accents on it. So I think this looks really good. I hope they do this color on the R2.

• 19:55Speaker 01

Yeah, so I guess we, this is limited. I don't know how limited yet.

• 19:58Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 19:59Speaker 01

But. I think that would be cool as well.

• 20:01Andrew Manganelli?

  Hmm.

• 20:02Speaker 01

And then R3X. Everyone loves the R3, but it's so far away. We're just like waiting.

• 20:05Andrew Manganelli?

I want it so bad. Oh my god, that's what I'm waiting for.

• 20:09Speaker 01

I, I think we universally all really like the R3. We're just waiting.

• 20:13Andrew Manganelli?

The R3 is one of those cars that like you aspire to drive and I feel like the R1 and the R2 are the cars that you actually end up driving.

• 20:19Speaker 01

Yeah, well, so allegedly R3 is gonna be cheaper though.

• 20:22Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 20:23Speaker 01

So it should have reasonable accessibility. I remember when they announced it, it was like the R1 and R1S were out and they announced the R2 and everyone goes, "Oh yes, this is nice. This is nice. It's smaller. It's more attainable." And then they go, "By the way, one more thing, R3." And everyone went, "Forget the R2."

• 20:39Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 20:40Speaker 01

Sick, I want that. So, yeah, it'll be, it'll be someday.

• 20:44David Imel?

And it looks more like a Subaru.

• 20:45Speaker 01

What did you, did you say, "This is my Roadster"? Is that what you said earlier?

• 20:48Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, this is, the R3X is my Roadster.

• 20:50Speaker 01

  R3X is our Roadster.

• 20:51David Imel?

But that means it'll never come out.

• 20:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:53Andrew Manganelli?

  It's not out yet.

• 20:54Speaker 01

It's years away. Years away. Well, speaking of things that are coming out, we should talk about the iPhone SE, but before we get to that, we should take a quick break, which means we got time for a trivia question.

• 21:06David Imel?

Did, also, the Roadster is light years away now because it got shot into space.

• 21:11Speaker 01

Well, that's the first gen Roadster. But then the new Roadster got announced and that was, what year do you think that was?

• 21:18David Imel?

  Eight years ago.

• 21:19Andrew Manganelli?

  2017.

• 21:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 21:21David Imel?

  Eight years ago.

• 21:23Andrew Manganelli?

It was like right when I started. I still remember that text.

• 21:26Speaker 01

  I barely graduated from college.

• 21:28David Imel?

  Came out, got announced.

• 21:29Andrew Manganelli?

  Right, 2017?

• 21:30Speaker 01

  I think it was 2017.

• 21:32David Imel?

Doesn't Tesla, are you like three of those things by now?

• 21:35Speaker 01

I, people, that's a common misconception. They only own me one and a half of them.

• 21:40Speaker 01

  Allegedly.

• 21:41David Imel?

  Allegedly.

• 21:42Andrew Manganelli?

That text message when you decided not to go to the semi event and then I was at home and I just like got this message of Marques being like, "Turn the event on." And I was like, "Why?" And then there's Roadster just on the stage.

• 21:53Speaker 04

But are you, it, it all worked out because you went to the iRobot event.

• 21:57Speaker 01

The one that is also, everything is for sure coming out.

• 21:59Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 22:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:00Speaker 04

  Anyway, trivia, guys, I-

• 22:03Speaker 01

The Cyber Taxi is sand colored. I just realized.

• 22:05David Imel?

  Well, it's yellow.

• 22:06Speaker 04

  Ah, nah.

• 22:07Speaker 01

  No.

• 22:08Speaker 04

  It's Mountain Dew colored.

• 22:08Speaker 01

  It's gold. It's gold colored.

• 22:10David Imel?

  Alright. Mountain Dew.

• 22:11Speaker 04

  Mountain Dew.

• 22:12David Imel?

  It's not green.

• 22:13Speaker 01

  What?

• 22:15David Imel?

  Mountain Dew's green.

• 22:16Speaker 04

  Mountain Dew's-

• 22:16Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 22:18Speaker 04

Trivia, dude. All right. It took every fiber of my being to not ask you guys a dune question today. Because I knew, no one would get it right.

• 22:31Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 22:32Speaker 04

So instead of doing a truck question.

• 22:34Speaker 01

  Oh, no.

• 22:34Speaker 04

Big, big truck day. So, talked about the Rivian. One of the things that I saw mentioned in this Rivian press release is their redo in the way the electric tonneau cover works. So I figured I'd make you guys search the inside of your brains for the origin of the word tonneau. It's an English word technically, but we're borrowing it from French. And we're borrowing it for the French word for what? And I have four choices. The first one is barrel. The second one is tunnel. C is mattress. And I don't know why I switched from numbers to letters there, but we're just rolling with it. Barrel, tunnel, mattress, or tonn, like the unit of measurement. Tonneau.

• 23:17Speaker 01

I hate that one feels very obvious.

• 23:20Speaker 04

  Which one?

• 23:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:22Speaker 04

To me, they all feel kind of obvious.

• 23:23Speaker 05

  Don't say it.

• 23:24Speaker 01

  Mattress?

• 23:25Speaker 04

Yeah, because it's a truck, Ben.

• 23:29Speaker 01

Well, we'll think about it. We don't, I don't think any of us know the answer, but we're gonna, we're gonna make a guess later. Answers will be at the end like usual. We'll be right back.

• 25:05Speaker 01

All right, welcome back. We've got some exciting, thrilling new breaking news this week. The most innovative and unique and exciting... I can't even do this. Uh, there's a new iPhone. It's the 16E. So it's actually not the SE anymore. Yeah. Big change. Uh, 16E. I think that makes sense. Didn't SE stand for special edition at one point? Yeah. But then it was just the budget iPhone, so now it's just the 16E. Cool. Uh, this completes the iPhone 16 family, as Tim Cook put it. It is, um, about what we expected. I mean, we, we saw some of the leaks and now we have the official specs and everything that's new. Here is a quick overview before I get reactions from everyone. It is, in fact, the newest chip, the A18. It does have enough RAM to run Apple Intelligence. Great, that's baseline stuff.

• 25:50Speaker 01

It has a 6.1 inch screen. It's an OLED. It has a notch with Face ID, so the home button is gone. It's just Face ID, no Touch ID. It does have black or white matte colors. It is, uh, it does have an action button. No camera control. 48 megapixel single camera on the back. And one less GPU core than the standard iPhone 16. So it is the same A18, same neural engine, but one less GPU core for the budget phone. No MagSafe. Okay, so it does have wireless charging, up to 7.5 watts, but no MagSafe magnets. And the phone has Apple's first in-house designed cellular modem that they're calling the C1.

• 26:35Speaker 01

Which apparently has been in development for a really long time. It's supposed to be super efficient. I would love to test this. It's they're touting a 26 hour video playback battery life, which is on par with the latest generations of iPhones. And it's $599 for 128 gigs. Starts at 599.

• 26:54David Imel?

  Yucky.

• 26:55Speaker 01

So, initial thoughts on this. I think a lot of people, including myself, immediately reacted to the price. Whoa, 599. That's a big jump from the last two. I don't know if you remember, the last two iPhones were, the last two SE iPhones were 399 and 429.

• 27:10David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 27:10Speaker 01

So this goes beyond 499 all the way up to 599 starting. And it does obviously improve a lot of things from the last cheap SE. It's not Lightning anymore, it's USB-C. It's a, you know, Face ID, it's an OLED. There's all these things that are updated. But, it is still, I mean, you could frame it as this is still 599 for a 60 hertz, like, base iPhone that has a single camera and doesn't do anything special. Like, why is it 599? Tariffs, of course, are going to come into play here. This is the first, I guess, new iPhone where we have to consider that.

• 27:45David Imel?

  True.

• 27:45Speaker 01

Yeah, I'm curious what the biggest surprises were. To me, honestly, MagSafe missing seems like the biggest miss.

• 27:52David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 27:53Speaker 01

I think a lot of people associate the iPhone with having MagSafe. And I guess that's pretty classic Apple to go, yeah, not the cheap one. Everyone else gets it, not the cheap one.

• 28:01David Imel?

  That is wild.

• 28:02Speaker 01

But yeah, like, the MagSafe thing, it still has wireless charging, you just can't line up magnets.

• 28:07David Imel?

But it's also 7.5 watts instead of 15 because no MagSafe. Every iPhone, since the iPhone 12, has had MagSafe.

• 28:14Speaker 01

  Except the SE.

• 28:15David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 28:16Speaker 01

Yeah. So the SE still doesn't have it.

• 28:19David Imel?

  Ellis's. MagSafe.

• 28:20Speaker 01

MagSafe. 12 Mini even, yeah, MagSafe, but not on the SE. So that is, I think, probably the biggest miss.

• 28:27David Imel?

  That's wild.

• 28:28Speaker 01

I think the biggest X-factor, question mark, is clearly the C1 chip. We don't know if that's going to be some incredible improvement. They'd been using Qualcomm modems in the past, for context. Is this going to be some huge battery life improvement that we see continue on future iPhones? Are they going to make a bigger deal about this in future iPhone keynotes? Is there some signal improvement that I should expect? Like what? We'd have to test it. I don't know what to expect from the C1.

• 28:54David Imel?

The C1 is like a lot of the 5G modem, but it does not include millimeter wave. So not that really anyone was using millimeter wave that frequently.

• 29:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 29:03David Imel?

But you can't use millimeter wave. Which the question then becomes, do they use millimeter wave for like precision finding with the air tags? Or is that?

• 29:13Speaker 01

That might be... I actually don't think that's through the cellular modem though.

• 29:17David Imel?

It's not through the cellular modem.

• 29:18Speaker 01

  So it might not matter.

• 29:19David Imel?

  Okay.

• 29:20Speaker 01

But they might start using the C1 to do that where they weren't before. That's the thing is I don't know. I have to test and figure out like what things work better, what things are more efficient. TBD, so that's the X factor. The things that we know are going to be good are it's the cheap iPhone with the newest chip, the A18. It's going to be probably the most powerful on paper 599 dollar phone. It's probably going to be a solid camera for a 599 dollar phone. Usually is.

• 29:47Andrew Manganelli?

The cheap, the cheap in there is relative and so much more relative now because like it's just so much harder calling this the cheap iPhone at $600, especially when the iPhone 16 is at $799, $200 more. That's like, that's a crazy jump.

• 30:03Speaker 01

That's a big jump from where we came from.

• 30:05Andrew Manganelli?

Does it make any of you guys scared for Pixel 9A?

• 30:09David Imel?

Like it'll go way up in price?

• 30:10Andrew Manganelli?

Like that'll take a jump like this?

• 30:12Speaker 01

  I don't think so.

• 30:14Andrew Manganelli?

  429 was super reasonable.

• 30:16Speaker 01

Right, 429 was way more obviously the budget iPhone one. It's half the price of the base iPhone.

• 30:21Andrew Manganelli?

And that was cheaper than, oh, it came out a few years ago.

• 30:24Speaker 01

It was years ago though, yeah.

• 30:25David Imel?

So it is $25 a month financing for two years.

• 30:30Speaker 01

That's how most people in the US are going to see this.

• 30:31David Imel?

That's how most people in the US see this. The iPhone 16 base is $33 a month for two years. So it's the, it's literally the difference of $8. And... For that, you are now missing the dynamic island, MagSafe.

• 30:49Andrew Manganelli?

  Ultra wide.

• 30:50David Imel?

Ultra wide camera. And I think that's it.

• 30:54Andrew Manganelli?

  A GPU core.

• 30:55Speaker 01

  Telephoto?

• 30:56David Imel?

  A GPU core.

• 30:57Speaker 01

  No telephoto on the base.

• 30:58David Imel?

  There's no telephoto.

• 30:59Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 31:00David Imel?

I, eight dollars a month. So eight dollars a month. I guess you could get a cheap streaming service for that price.

• 31:08Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 31:09Speaker 01

  Phoebe?

• 31:10David Imel?

Phoebe or, or Doo Doo or something. I don't know.

• 31:14Speaker 01

But this is, it's an interesting phone. I kind of, I'm already starting to form my opinions because at a software level, we kind of already know what the iPhone is. Like, we're not expecting some new crazy features to come with this. We know what Apple Intelligence is already. We know what iOS 18 is already. We know what that looks like on an A18. We know what that looks like on a 6.1 inch OLED. It's just strip out some of these features. Is this phone still for you? I think there's obviously a group, especially people who watch waveform and who are really into tech. There's a group of people who are going, are you, you're telling me $600 for a phone with a 60 hertz display in 2025? Is that a joke? Are you making fun of us? Of course, that's a terrible deal. And people like that, this phone's not for you.

• 31:57Speaker 01

But there's a whole separate group of people who are like, what's the cheapest, smallest iPhone I can get that's brand new? That's going to have five, six, seven years of software support. Give me that one. This is the phone for you, even if it's not $400. It's $600 this time, but this is still the correct answer to that question. So whether or not this is the phone for you kind of depends on who you are. And yeah, we just now know what the phone is.

• 32:20David Imel?

I'm curious because the iPhone SEs traditionally have not sold that well. So I'm wondering if making a more expensive phone is making them more likely to sell well? I don't, I mean, it probably shouldn't, but.

• 32:34Andrew Manganelli?

I have a question that kind of can piggyback on that.

• 32:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 32:37Andrew Manganelli?

Do you think part of the reason it doesn't sell well is because of the inconsistency of when it releases? Because we don't get them every year?

• 32:45David Imel?

I think it's because of carrier plans.

• 32:47Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 32:47David Imel?

I think it's because people don't care about the difference between a few bucks a month and they just get the better one.

• 32:52Speaker 01

Yeah, the Pro Max for the past year or two has been the best selling version, at least in the US. That's says a lot.

• 32:59David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 32:59Speaker 01

  So.

• 33:00Andrew Manganelli?

The, the reason I ask that is because, first of all, I think iPhone 16e is the better naming scheme, even if we've gotten used to SE.

• 33:08David Imel?

  I agree with you.

• 33:08Andrew Manganelli?

And that's what we did. My question about that is if we've now introduced this into the same number of the current lineup of phones, is this an every year release now?

• 33:18David Imel?

That's a great question. If that was true and they were also releasing an Air for the 17, they would have a lot of models.

• 33:24Speaker 01

I, even in the grand scheme of things, it's a lot for the iPhone, but it's still not that much. Like, look at Samsung. Like, if iPhones next year are 17, 17+, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, 17 Air, and 17e.

• 33:39David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 33:39Speaker 01

That sounds like a lot, but then you look over at Samsung and they're like, we have a phone at every price from $90 to $1,700 at increments of 10. And they all have different names. Their A series, their Z series, their Galaxy S series. So, I could see it.

• 33:55David Imel?

The one market that they're not really hitting right now where they could really dominate if they wanted to is the like pay as you go market, because that's where Samsung like really, really tracks. The reason that the A, the A series Samsung phones are so insanely popular is because they're sold at Boost Mobile as like pay as you go phones.

• 34:11Speaker 01

Yeah, they are much cheaper though.

• 34:13David Imel?

Way cheaper. Yeah, really cheap. Really cheap.

• 34:16Speaker 01

Like, they'll go plastic, they'll go like.

• 34:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 34:19Speaker 01

  $229.

• 34:20David Imel?

I don't think Apple wants to really compete in that market because you have to make pretty low quality stuff.

• 34:25Andrew Manganelli?

I have a question for you guys. This is something Harper asked me and I was stumped. Should you get this phone or an iPhone 15?

• 34:34Speaker 01

  15?

• 34:34David Imel?

  Regular 15.

• 34:35Speaker 01

I'll tell you what Apple would say and then I'll tell you what I would say.

• 34:38David Imel?

  Regular 15?

• 34:39Speaker 01

  Like a base 15?

• 34:40Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, base 15, not Pro, regular 15.

• 34:42Speaker 01

Apple would say you don't get Apple Intelligence with the base 15. That's what Apple is.

• 34:46Andrew Manganelli?

You don't get Apple Intelligence for this one either.

• 34:48Speaker 01

  No, you do. You do.

• 34:49Andrew Manganelli?

I thought it's still rolling out.

• 34:51Speaker 01

  16E.

• 34:51David Imel?

  Well.

• 34:52Andrew Manganelli?

  That's what I'm saying.

• 34:53David Imel?

  Two different things. Yeah.

• 34:54Speaker 01

Yeah. 15 is never getting Apple Intelligence. 16E has enough RAM. It has Apple Intelligence.

• 34:59David Imel?

  Has an action button.

• 35:00Speaker 01

Uh, what I would say is.

• 35:03David Imel?

  I get this.

• 35:04Speaker 01

How much do you care about the two things that are like meaningfully different to the experience? The ultra wide camera and one extra year of software updates? Like, those are the things that are maybe meaningfully different? MagSafe? How much do you care about those things?

• 35:19David Imel?

  I love MagSafe. Oh.

• 35:20Andrew Manganelli?

  I know.

• 35:21Speaker 01

And I think if you do care about those things, you should get the 15. Because you can get it for as cheap, probably less.

• 35:27Andrew Manganelli?

Right now, if you bought it straight from Apple, it's $6.99 versus $5.99.

• 35:31David Imel?

  Yeah, it's $100 more for a 15.

• 35:32Speaker 01

For a brand new 15 today?

• 35:34David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 35:34Speaker 01

Because they discontinued the 14. So the cheapest... Okay, so a 15 is $6.99.

• 35:40David Imel?

  But it has...

• 35:41Speaker 01

And that gets you an ultra wide.

• 35:42David Imel?

The dynamic island, ultra wide, MagSafe. One less year of software and no Apple Intelligence, which could be a plus. But, and it has the action button. Wait, does it?

• 35:54Speaker 01

  No, 15 doesn't.

• 35:57David Imel?

Wait, did they really just announce the action button?

• 35:59Speaker 01

The 16? Oh, no, no, sorry. The 15 did have it.

• 36:02David Imel?

The 15 Pro had that. Oh, only the Pro had it.

• 36:05Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 36:06David Imel?

  Is that true?

• 36:07Speaker 01

Let me look it up. Oh, the 15 Pro had the action button.

• 36:10Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, I don't think the Pro.

• 36:12Speaker 01

Yeah. So if you want an action button, you gotta get the 16E.

• 36:16David Imel?

I do like the action button.

• 36:18Speaker 01

Are you a... Yeah, I guess you won't know unless you start using a phone if you actually care about the action button.

• 36:22David Imel?

  $100 less.

• 36:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:25Andrew Manganelli?

Apple needs like one of those like, what Marvel character are you quizzes? For the very specifics of which thing you need. And that's like, like, find the perfect person for the iPhone 16E that wouldn't rather have an iPhone 15, wouldn't rather just go to the iPhone 16 regular.

• 36:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:43David Imel?

Or buy a used iPhone 15 for way less money.

• 36:49Speaker 01

If you need, yeah, if you're not paying on the the monthly dollar amount.

• 36:53Speaker 05

You know who this is for? When I worked at Best Buy Mobile, there were people that would come in with like a really old six year old phone and just be like, give me the cheapest newest one.

• 37:01Speaker 01

  A hundred percent.

• 37:02Speaker 05

Yeah. And that's who it's for.

• 37:03Speaker 01

  The cheapest newest one.

• 37:04Andrew Manganelli?

I could also see this being for the company that wants to buy everyone work phones and at $200 cheaper for every single phone and you're buying.

• 37:12Speaker 05

  The E is for enterprise.

• 37:15Andrew Manganelli?

  There we go.

• 37:16Speaker 01

Oh, no, isn't it always for enterprise? Or education. Wow. I think it's for expensive. It's for eggs. That's why it's overpriced.

• 37:23Speaker 05

I thought it was for Ellis.

• 37:25Speaker 01

Yeah. Ellis. We will, we will get our hands on this phone. We will test it. We will review it. Stay tuned, of course, for those thoughts. Um, but yeah, iPhone 16e, that is out. Another phone that also has a small letter at the end of its name is not out yet. God, I'm crushing the segues. You really are. That's pretty good.

• 37:42Andrew Manganelli?

There was a comment last week that said, y'all are really getting lazy on the segues and you just.

• 37:47Speaker 01

  Welcome back.

• 37:48Andrew Manganelli?

Brought it back to this episode.

• 37:49Speaker 01

Welcome back. I liked the last one. That was good. Nothing Phone 3A. It's not really unveiled. We're getting the classic like dribble of information. I think last week, Nothing said it'll have a Qualcomm chip. And that was it. Cool. Um, this week on our YouTube channel, they did a very, very objective, uh, smartphone camera comparison. So they didn't show the design of the phone, but they showed that they were taking photos alongside a 16, an iPhone 16 Pro Max and a couple random different scenarios. Compared them back to back and then concluded that they were very impressed with their own product. Marquez, was it, was it deceptive at all? Look, if you're Nothing, you're incentivized to make your device look as good as possible. You don't make that video if you don't think it'll work well.

• 38:35Speaker 01

So if there are instances where you can give the Nothing Phone an edge, you'll do it. Uh, I think one instance was the video stabilization section. Where they compared the ultrawide of the iPhone to the regular camera on the six, on the Nothing Phone 3A. Quality is so much worse on the ultrawide camera. It's a fact. It's pretty, it's pretty bad. So, look, I look forward to the Phone 3A coming out. I have no doubt that there. Are trying to hype that it'll be a better camera because the spec by itself convinces no one. It's an interesting YouTube video. It's also an interesting case study in a company reviewing its own products. I don't know how people feel about that. Me personally, I want to believe that they can do an objective job, but like

• 39:14Speaker 05

They're not going to do it.

• 39:15Speaker 01

Like I can't watch that video and then have them at the end go, I'm very impressed by our product. Well, yeah.

• 39:22Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 39:22Speaker 01

  Obviously.

• 39:23Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 39:23Speaker 01

Um, but if you're super curious about this phone coming up, there's a glimpse at some stuff that it'll be capable of.

• 39:29Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 39:29Speaker 01

Um, that's the nothing phone three A.

• 39:32Speaker 05

Can I just say, I love this rollout that they're doing because

• 39:36Speaker 01

  The tease of

• 39:36Speaker 05

I don't think they're trying to be objective. I think this is them being like, instead of sending it to influencers, let's just do our own videos.

• 39:43David Imel?

  We'll influence ourselves.

• 39:45Speaker 01

I think that's essentially what the like mood board is for their YouTube channel.

• 39:51Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 39:52Speaker 01

I think they went, wow, people really seem to like the trustworthy voices in this sort of casual style where we talk about phones. So how about we just do that for our own phones and we have unlimited exclusive access to everything we make.

• 40:07Speaker 05

And you don't even have to pretend to be ethical because you are the company.

• 40:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:11Andrew Manganelli?

I think that is like important is we know they're not going to be objective because it physically says it's from nothing. So we know they're the ones doing it. And I give them credit. They're, they're good at knowing their audience and being kind of, it's more personal seeing them doing stuff like this. And I went into it like, cool, they're doing a great job. And then when I saw the comments, we're all saying like, that's definitely the ultra wide camera they did the video on. And they didn't, it's not only that they didn't mention that, it's that right before it, they said, we're recording both of these in like 4K 30. Just so you know, the iPhone can go higher frame rate, but we're trying to make it fair. So it like, they gave the iPhone credit while also

• 40:52Andrew Manganelli?

like by that giving credit makes it feel more trustworthy to then not mention the biggest issue.

• 40:58Speaker 01

Cause that, yeah. I want, I feel like I want to give them credit because they are doing something unique. You don't see this type of stuff from Samsung.

• 41:07David Imel?

Yeah. Imagine if Samsung did this. Yeah, it would feel crazy. So it is very fun and startup-y and competitive and interesting. And we pay attention to it, but I don't think we should be going there for purely objective information. So.

• 41:21Speaker 04

We joke around about nothing and Carl pay a lot, you know, but I do think if Samsung attempted to do this, it would be the most cringe thing.

• 41:30Andrew Manganelli?

  It would be so cringe.

• 41:31Speaker 04

And Samsung, we love you, but don't do this.

• 41:35Andrew Manganelli?

  Do it.

• 41:36Speaker 04

Like, it would be, it would be, oh my God, it would make, it would make all the hairs on your arms stand up. They'd just be like, oh.

• 41:44David Imel?

Yeah, yeah. It kind of gives the old Moment YouTube channel vibes.

• 41:49Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 41:50David Imel?

If you remember that, Moment is this like camera, camera accessories company that used to review their own lenses and stuff. Although they didn't, they didn't really say they were reviews. They would be like testing.

• 42:02Andrew Manganelli?

  What it was capable of.

• 42:02David Imel?

Yeah, yeah. Which felt more ethical than this.

• 42:05Speaker 01

Yeah, I think it's when you bring in a competitor's product and compare it directly to it. You're like, now I don't know. Like, I can listen to anything.

• 42:12Andrew Manganelli?

Definitely don't know. I don't think I can listen to anything you're saying.

• 42:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 42:17Andrew Manganelli?

They, they're very good at doing the like compliment sandwich of, of like, let's say one nice thing about our competitor, which therefore makes it feel closer. And then for the next 20 minutes, talk about everything.

• 42:29David Imel?

One of their most popular videos was Carl pay, Carl pay reviewing the new iPhone, which they did exactly that. He's like, actually their engineering is very good on this. Like, I'm very impressed. And then

• 42:38Speaker 04

  No way.

• 42:39David Imel?

20 minutes of good things about the nothing phone. So.

• 42:42Speaker 01

I remember when Zucker reviewed the Vision Pro and he just was like, I used the Vision Pro and then I used our Meta Quest Pro. And I was just shocked at how much better our product is.

• 42:52Andrew Manganelli?

Do you remember the best part of that video? It was filmed on a Meta Quest 3 and he turns around and there's the guy just standing like this.

• 43:01Speaker 01

  Forgot about that.

• 43:02Andrew Manganelli?

  Forgot about that too.

• 43:03Speaker 01

Yeah. And it makes it hard because like sometimes what they're saying can actually be true. It's just we, we have to hear it from an unbiased third party to actually take it seriously.

• 43:12Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, like our podcast is super well produced and it's the greatest podcast in the world. So.

• 43:16Speaker 01

Especially when compared to other tech podcasts. Sometimes I watch those and I'm just so amazed at how much better ours looks and sounds and it's just produced.

• 43:25David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 43:25Andrew Manganelli?

  It's a fact.

• 43:26Speaker 01

But don't take it from me.

• 43:27David Imel?

  Yeah, well, do take it.

• 43:28Andrew Manganelli?

But don't, don't listen to any other podcasts.

• 43:30Speaker 01

Yeah, do take it from me. Yeah. No, I mean.

• 43:33David Imel?

That's why I look so bad.

• 43:33Speaker 01

Definitely. Get your news from a variety of sources. This is pretty classic media literacy 101. But yeah, you know, we got a little peek at the 3A.

• 43:43David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 43:43Speaker 01

  That was cool.

• 43:44David Imel?

Okay, well, it'll come out eventually.

• 43:45Speaker 01

  Eventually.

• 43:46David Imel?

I don't think, so Carl Pei had said that the Nothing Phone 3 was going to be their first AI phone. So usually they, like, the Nothing Phone 2A came out after the Nothing Phone 2. So now they're releasing the 3A before the 3. And the A is the cheaper, the regular is the flagship. So the 3, I believe, is slated for like, I don't know, I think they said later this year, summer or something. And that's their first AI phone, which will be interesting and weird.

• 44:15Speaker 04

Before we go to, before we leave Nothing, I didn't want to, I think we've got an interesting opportunity for a little future wager prediction.

• 44:22David Imel?

  Uh oh.

• 44:23Speaker 04

Which is, when the inevitable Nothing AI assistant comes out, what are they going to name it?

• 44:33Speaker 04

And I will not accept Little Carl as an answer.

• 44:35Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, God, I want it to be Little Carl.

• 44:39Speaker 01

Carl. I, so you know how Samsung did that weird thing where they combined Bixby and Gemini? And it was just kind of like Gemini with plugins in the S25 lineup?

• 44:50David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 44:51Speaker 01

It could be along those lines. And what was interesting was I was talking to them about it and they said there's no name for it.

• 45:00David Imel?

  For the assistant?

• 45:01Speaker 01

For the assistant. But you can still say.

• 45:03David Imel?

I mean, it is called Nothing.

• 45:03Speaker 01

Google or Gemini. But for Nothing, this is for Samsung.

• 45:07David Imel?

  Oh.

• 45:07Speaker 01

For Nothing, though, you still just say Google or Gemini to pull it up. So I think that will still be true. I don't think they're going to name it at all.

• 45:16David Imel?

Do you say, "Hey Gemini" now? You still say, "Hey Google."

• 45:19Speaker 01

  AG, yeah, Google.

• 45:21David Imel?

But does Gemini, can you say, "Hey Gemini"?

• 45:24Speaker 01

  I don't, I've never actually tried. I don't think I've tried that. Let's try it right now.

• 45:27Speaker 04

I have Gemini attached to my action button, so that's how I pull it up.

• 45:30Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, so you have to launch Gemini.

• 45:31Speaker 01

All right, mute me real quick. "Hey Google." Okay, that worked. "Hey Gemini." "Hey Gemini." "Okay, Gemini."

• 45:41Speaker 01

  Nah, it doesn't work.

• 45:41Speaker 05

  Brilliant branding, Google.

• 45:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 45:44Speaker 05

Rename everything and then not allow you to call it.

• 45:46Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 45:47Speaker 04

I think they're gonna name it after the bird. Do you remember the bird from all the Nothing Phone One advertisements? The parrot?

• 45:55Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 45:55Speaker 04

The parrot? I think it's gonna be called like Parrot or Bird Guy or something like that.

• 46:00Speaker 01

  Something bird related?

• 46:01Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:02Speaker 05

  Do you think they're gonna?

• 46:02Speaker 01

  You're gonna have to squawk.

• 46:04Speaker 05

  Squawk?

• 46:04Speaker 04

Yeah. Anyway, trivia! Wait, did everyone say their predictions?

• 46:11Speaker 05

I wasn't created enough. All right.

• 46:14Speaker 01

  I'll go with Little Carl.

• 46:15Speaker 05

  No name.

• 46:16Speaker 01

Little Carl. God, I really hope it's Little Carl.

• 46:19Speaker 05

Trivia, dude. So, we just finished talking about nothing, but they also sell-

• 46:24Speaker 01

  Like usual.

• 46:25Speaker 05

Welcome to Waveform. They also sell other things, you know, like headphones. And under their sub-brand, CMF, they also sell like the watch, you know? Uh, but did you know that they also sell a 5.1% beer? Named what?

• 46:42Speaker 01

  What? They sell beer?

• 46:43Speaker 05

  They sell beer.

• 46:44Speaker 01

  Is it rebranded?

• 46:46Speaker 05

  There's nothing beer, 5.1% alcohol.

• 46:48Speaker 01

  How much is that?

• 46:49Speaker 05

  Is that a lot?

• 46:51Speaker 04

Sir, what have you been drinking?

• 46:52Speaker 05

  Nothing. Nothing.

• 46:54Speaker 01

  Hey.

• 46:55Speaker 05

Loophole. But what is the name of that beer?

• 46:58Speaker 01

  Huh.

• 46:59Speaker 05

  Hmm.

• 47:00Speaker 01

  This is another trivia question.

• 47:02Speaker 05

  Little Carl?

• 47:07Speaker 01

I wasn't built for this question. One of you may get it, but not me.

• 47:10Speaker 05

Well, we'll think about it. We'll think about it. We'll be right back.

• 47:26Speaker 05

Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. So AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from, but when that context is scattered across tools like threads and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying kind of blind. That's the problem Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all of these pieces together from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more.

• 47:50Speaker 01

So nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot. Assign them work directly or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping. Learn more at jira.com. That's J-I-R-A dot com.

• 48:59Andrew Manganelli?

All right, welcome back. We have two quick things to cover. One, I hold very near and dear to my heart. Not really, but Reddit.

• 49:06Speaker 01

I didn't realize you cared that much about Kindle.

• 49:09Andrew Manganelli?

You could talk about that. Reddit will be launching page subreddits.

• 49:16Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, I'm going to, okay, there was a comment last week that said Andrew really bums me out, so I'm gonna be optimistic about this.

• 49:22Speaker 01

Wait, no, this is not the time. You don't have to be optimistic about this.

• 49:26David Imel?

You know that asteroid that might hit Earth in a few years?

• 49:29Speaker 01

I don't want to butt anything out, but like, the percentage of it hitting Earth? Why not?

• 49:34David Imel?

It did go up. I saw an article that it did go up.

• 49:38Andrew Manganelli?

All right. Okay, so Steve Huffman, the CEO of Reddit and one of the founders of Reddit, did a video AMA because he's too much of a coward to do a regular AMA.

• 49:48David Imel?

A video AMAs where you just answer questions in video form?

• 49:51Andrew Manganelli?

I don't know where he grabbed the questions. I'm sure there might have been one, but it means you can't obviously be skipping the number one upvoted one. Like, you know, when you've done your AMAs, it's kind of hard to skip the one that's like

• 50:02David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 50:02Andrew Manganelli?

at the top with thousands of upvotes.

• 50:04David Imel?

And the questions were definitely written from real people and people on the Reddit team. Yeah, totally.

• 50:09Andrew Manganelli?

He did mention that there's plans, he's said this before, plans for some sort of paywall content on Reddit. He said, there's one coming. We're working on it as we speak. So I tried to take the optimistic approach here and thought of a way that might be beneficial for a paywall subreddit.

• 50:25David Imel?

  What'd you come up with?

• 50:26Andrew Manganelli?

And I'll pitch it to you guys.

• 50:27David Imel?

  Patreon.

• 50:28Andrew Manganelli?

Exactly. I think a creator or person

• 50:33David Imel?

  Communities.

• 50:33Andrew Manganelli?

focused community, like paywall community could be the perfect in-between of like Patreon, which is fairly slow, and Discord Premium, which is fairly quick in terms of chatting.

• 50:44David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 50:44Andrew Manganelli?

I think that could be beneficial. It could be pretty cool, as long as that payments is partially going to the creator of it.

• 50:51David Imel?

  Right.

• 50:51Andrew Manganelli?

Then I don't know, though, how, who creates the subreddit, who would get payment? Because how would someone else not just create the MKBHD subreddit? Right now, our subreddit, we don't even control. We have no control over. So that was my idea here. Judging by how Reddit's gone lately, it's probably just a money grab and will be total garbage.

• 51:11David Imel?

Very unhappy with what Reddit has been doing in the last couple of years. However, optimistic approach. I do think that putting a like paid, I will see something that I pay for in my feed that I'm already scrolling approach is a good way to do it. Because the problem with Patreon is that you either have to check your email a lot and read everything in your email, which is a bad experience, or you have to go to the Patreon website in order to consume the content. And like, nobody just frequents the Patreon website, right? But if you're already scrolling Reddit and it just like a subreddit that you subscribe to just shows up in your Reddit feed passively, it's like I have access to content that I didn't have before and is now part of my stream of content.

• 51:53David Imel?

So I think that that is a good way to consume paid content is just to have it appear with your other content. I don't love that it's like isolated to Reddit and you have to probably use the official Reddit app and all this stuff. So this is exactly how Twitter does it.

• 52:10Speaker 01

  Right now, you just described.

• 52:11David Imel?

  Right.

• 52:12Speaker 01

So if you subscribe to someone on Twitter, their paid content shows up inside the feed along with the rest of the free content. And if you aren't subscribed, it actually shows you a tiny one-line preview, encouraging you to then go subscribe and pay to see the whole thing, to unlock the post in your feed. So it makes sense. It makes sense because also, like, people just scroll Reddit. That's the thing. People just are around, and so it acts as a platform to surface people exploring and finding new things. So I could see that working out. Yeah, I'm not shocked by it. I bet Reddit takes a cut.

• 52:43David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 52:44Speaker 01

It's a competitive, like, they're a platform, so they're gonna take a cut because they're servicing things to people. But then hopefully, people who wouldn't have found as much of an audience on Patreon without that active people scrolling will have a bigger audience because Reddit just surfaces it to people.

• 52:59David Imel?

Also, over/under on Reddit forcing you to subscribe to the subreddits on desktop? Because Apple would take a cut of whatever they're doing.

• 53:08Andrew Manganelli?

  Very good point.

• 53:09Speaker 01

Yeah. So if you're in the Reddit app, there's another 30% gone.

• 53:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 53:14Speaker 01

Damn. Yeah, that's probably gonna happen.

• 53:17Andrew Manganelli?

This is based on very little information. Like, I don't know if that's what they're doing. That's my, my best take. And I think that seems the most reasonable way to do it, right? Is like to have a community, communities like to, communities are more fun when they're small, right? Because it actually feels like you're participating.

• 53:32David Imel?

  Yes.

• 53:33Andrew Manganelli?

So by having a premium community where there is a paywall to get in guarantees a closer knit, and especially when they can get brigaded by something else.

• 53:43David Imel?

  Right.

• 53:44Andrew Manganelli?

That does seem beneficial. And I could totally see it working. I hate to give Reddit credit. It'll still be on the worst app in all of history, and I still hate Steve Huffman.

• 53:56David Imel?

So there used to be a feature on the Reddit app where you could, like, go to the next comment by hitting this little bubble. And I no longer have it on my app.

• 54:05Andrew Manganelli?

  I don't remember that.

• 54:05David Imel?

  There for you.

• 54:06Speaker 01

You're talking about collapsing a thread and then the next thread comes?

• 54:08David Imel?

It, like, just jumps to the next thread.

• 54:10Andrew Manganelli?

I thought they changed kind of how threading works in Reddit recently.

• 54:15Speaker 01

  I still use Relay.

• 54:17David Imel?

  Or, sorry, in the comments.

• 54:18Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 54:19David Imel?

  I'm jealous of that.

• 54:20Andrew Manganelli?

I'm trying to get to something with a good comment.

• 54:20Speaker 01

  It's actually incredible app.

• 54:21David Imel?

Yeah, see, there's no thing anymore. There used to be a little bubble in the bottom-right corner that would jump you to the next head. What are you doing?

• 54:27Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, that does. There's a little arrow down here.

• 54:29David Imel?

Oh, yeah, I don't, that's not on the iOS app anymore.

• 54:32Andrew Manganelli?

  I mean, this app sucks.

• 54:35Speaker 01

  Really bad, yeah.

• 54:37David Imel?

  It's quite bad.

• 54:37Andrew Manganelli?

That's actually good to know. Damn, they did put in a nice feature.

• 54:40David Imel?

See, it's just not in the iOS app anymore.

• 54:45Andrew Manganelli?

  Damn.

• 54:46David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 54:46Andrew Manganelli?

  Eat shit iPhone users.

• 54:48Speaker 01

I will say, if you, like I said, I've had a continuously pretty good Reddit experience using Relay on Android.

• 54:54David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 54:55Speaker 01

So if you want a good Reddit experience.

• 54:57Andrew Manganelli?

How much is it a month?

• 54:59Speaker 01

  It's not cheap.

• 55:01Andrew Manganelli?

  It's like eight bucks, right?

• 55:02Speaker 01

It has to be not cheap because of how much, how much it costs the developer for that subscription.

• 55:07Andrew Manganelli?

  It's not cheap, yeah.

• 55:08David Imel?

  That's true.

• 55:08Speaker 05

Low key, that might actually be worth it, though.

• 55:10Speaker 01

  If you use Reddit, yeah.

• 55:12David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 55:12Speaker 01

  Insert through things easily, subscription.

• 55:16Andrew Manganelli?

If I just cancel my Tubi subscription, I could probably pay for that.

• 55:20Speaker 01

  Shows me my API usage.

• 55:22David Imel?

  Wow.

• 55:23Speaker 01

The breakdown, loading comments, loading feed, profiles, wow.

• 55:26David Imel?

  Dang.

• 55:27Speaker 01

Yeah, but paid subreddits, actually kind of a good idea.

• 55:33Andrew Manganelli?

Worst person you know makes a great point.

• 55:38Andrew Manganelli?

The best part is, is he hasn't even made the point. We've, we've developed the point for him.

• 55:42David Imel?

Yeah, so, question, um, they have, they have an in Reddit video player and photo image viewer now, right? Maybe that's why they were doing that. Instead of just having a YouTube embed where they can't like host the content, now it's like also better than Patreon in that you can like host it locally just on the subreddit as well. So you have to go on reddit.com in order to view the like subscriber only content.

• 56:07Speaker 01

  That'd be interesting.

• 56:08David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 56:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:09David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 56:09Speaker 01

  It all checks out.

• 56:10David Imel?

  It all checks out.

• 56:12Speaker 01

We'll keep an eye on it.

• 56:13David Imel?

  Well, speaking of.

• 56:14Speaker 01

  Speaking of checking out.

• 56:15Speaker 05

  Speaking of eyes.

• 56:18Speaker 01

  Eyes?

• 56:18David Imel?

  You use them to.

• 56:20Speaker 05

  Read.

• 56:21Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 56:21David Imel?

  Your.

• 56:23Andrew Manganelli?

  Sandwiches.

• 56:25Speaker 01

  Sandwiches.

• 56:25Andrew Manganelli?

Book that you don't own anymore.

• 56:27Speaker 01

I thought mine was pretty good. I said, speaking of checking out, and then I was gonna go to Amazon.

• 56:30David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 56:31Speaker 01

  Amazon exists.

• 56:32David Imel?

  That was a good cycle.

• 56:33Speaker 05

Oh, I see, checking out. I was, my head went to like libraries, like checking out books.

• 56:37Andrew Manganelli?

  Wait, wait, wait, Amazon exists?

• 56:39Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 56:40Andrew Manganelli?

  Since when?

• 56:40Speaker 01

  You didn't hear?

• 56:41David Imel?

  Speaking of checking out.

• 56:42Speaker 01

Yeah, no, it's a whole thing. They sell books.

• 56:46David Imel?

I hope you haven't checked out of this podcast yet.

• 56:49Andrew Manganelli?

Well, what is happening with Amazon and books, though?

• 56:51Speaker 05

Adam. Amazon is removing a feature that will let you download your purchased ebook to your computer first. Cool, cool, cool. So, not a huge deal, because most people probably don't interact with their ebooks that way. Like personally, when I buy an ebook on Kindle, I just download it straight to the device, you know, like straight through wifi, whatever. But there is a way to download it to the computer first and then transfer it via USB cable to your device, if you wanted to do that for whatever reason. One of the reasons is that that basically allows you to strip it of DRM content, and then you can put it on any other e-reader that you have. Because if you don't have a Kindle, you could just put it on a regular e-reader or whatever.

• 57:34Speaker 05

Also, that allows you to basically own the ebook that you purchased. Yeah, well, yeah, because you bought it. Yeah, well- We can't have that. That's not gonna happen anymore. Amazon can't have that. Because now, when you down- because you can't download it anymore, it's basically like streaming. Like, you know how- That is horrible. Yeah, like how PlayStation, if you buy the digital version, technically, you don't like own the game. You know, it's the same situation now with books. So if, for whatever reason, Amazon decides to stop hosting a book, or if they change the covers of books, that's one thing people have been complaining about, or they like update the versions of the books, your ebook will change, because it's like reflecting the changes that Amazon is doing on their end, even though you purchased it. So like, what do you really own anymore? You're basically purchasing an indefinite license. Yeah, you're licensing-

• 58:18Speaker 05

The right to stream this book.

• 58:20Andrew Manganelli?

  I hate the future.

• 58:22Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 58:23Speaker 04

  iTunes, too.

• 58:24Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 58:25Speaker 04

And not that this is something that affects any of us, but I'm pretty sure back in the day, if you died, Apple took all your iTunes files back and you couldn't pass them down to your kids.

• 58:33Andrew Manganelli?

They just put them up to the cloud.

• 58:35Speaker 05

  Damn.

• 58:35Speaker 04

  With you. Bless out.

• 58:38Speaker 05

So basically, if you have a big ebook library in Kindle, you have until February 26th to download all of your ebooks, because after that, you will no longer be able to.

• 58:47Andrew Manganelli?

I think Meta just downloaded like 82 terabytes of it.

• 58:50David Imel?

  Allegedly, allegedly.

• 58:53Speaker 01

  I heard.

• 58:54Speaker 04

Out of curiosity, will you still be able to sideload eBooks onto a Kindle?

• 58:59Speaker 05

  Onto a Kindle?

• 58:59Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 59:00Speaker 05

  Probably.

• 59:00David Imel?

Yeah, there's that Kindle to cloud app that you can use that they haven't updated since 2006.

• 59:06Speaker 04

  But it, okay, okay.

• 59:07Speaker 05

This is more so how, this is more so how you get books from Amazon. Like, Amazon's changing it on their end, how you do this.

• 59:14David Imel?

  Let's go to Borders instead.

• 59:16Speaker 05

Yeah, do that. But what is like purchasing anything anymore in this digital age? Like, do we actually own anything?

• 59:22David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 59:22Speaker 05

  Nope, I don't think so.

• 59:23David Imel?

When I buy a hoagie, I eat it and then it just disappears from my stomach when they decide to discontinue it.

• 59:29Speaker 05

  You're just licensing them.

• 59:30David Imel?

Licensing the nutrients. What percentage of our audience knows what a hoagie is? Oh, it's a sandwich.

• 59:38Speaker 05

  It's a hero.

• 59:39David Imel?

  It's pretty original, right?

• 59:42Speaker 01

We've gone off the deep end. I think it's time to wrap up the pod with trivia.

• 59:53Speaker 04

All right, question number one, fellas. Tono cover, we get it from French, but specifically, we get it from the French word for what? Hit it. A, barrel. B, tunnel. C, mattress. Or D, ton, like the unit of measurement.

• 1:00:16Speaker 04

And this question took a lot of research. So, please don't mess it up.

• 1:00:23David Imel?

Are you sure that the research was correct?

• 1:00:26Speaker 04

Why would you say that in front of, why would you say that in front of our audience? Be like, I don't know, Ellis. Maybe they shouldn't trust you 100%.

• 1:00:35David Imel?

Just make sure you ask ChatGPT first to confirm.

• 1:00:37Speaker 04

Oh, yeah, sure, that'll get me the right answer. Right, flip them and read, who wants to go first?

• 1:00:43David Imel?

  I just went with ton.

• 1:00:45Speaker 04

  Ton is correct.

• 1:00:48David Imel?

  Nice.

• 1:00:49Andrew Manganelli?

  So I also did that.

• 1:00:50Speaker 04

So you also got it? David, you put?

• 1:00:53David Imel?

  Mattress.

• 1:00:54Speaker 04

Mattress, I made up, but in a rare, in fact, for the very first time in waveform multiple choice history, there were two correct answers amongst this four. Because ton, ton, tonneau actually comes, is the French word for barrel, more specifically, like a cask, like a large barrel. And the English word ton comes also from that word because, you know, this was the part that was really complicated to make sure I had to get right. But essentially, you started off by measuring most of like how much stuff you could carry on a boat and how many barrels you could fit on it. And then over time, through some complicated language stuff, we extrapolated the word

• 1:01:38Speaker 04

ton from that French word, barrel. Anyway, thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

• 1:01:43David Imel?

All that to say, David, you did actually have a 50 50 shot.

• 1:01:48Andrew Manganelli?

Do you know how I know it wasn't mattress? Ellis was so eager to say his like, like, like the bed of a truck, come on. I was like, that's not it. He's too proud of making that up.

• 1:01:59David Imel?

Yeah, I should have known that the French would have not said mattress. They probably have another word for mattress. It's very like sleeper, something like that.

• 1:02:09Speaker 04

This has been linguistics with waveform.

• 1:02:11David Imel?

I really wanted to say, damn, there was a 50% chance. How'd you come up with that?

• 1:02:17David Imel?

  Sorry, Ellis, I shouldn't, that's really mean.

• 1:02:19Speaker 04

Quick update on the score. Marquez with six. Andrew with four, after those two correct points.

• 1:02:28David Imel?

  Good job, guys.

• 1:02:29Speaker 04

David, still in the lead with 10. If you combine Andrew and Marquez's points.

• 1:02:35David Imel?

  It is now about.

• 1:02:35Speaker 04

  It is a tie.

• 1:02:36David Imel?

  Oh, it's tied, man.

• 1:02:37Speaker 04

  Yeah, you both have six.

• 1:02:38David Imel?

I should have known it wasn't mattress.

• 1:02:39Speaker 04

Should have. Okay, next question. Nothing makes a beer. What is it called?

• 1:02:50Andrew Manganelli?

  It's 5.1%.

• 1:02:55Speaker 01

  It definitely has a name.

• 1:02:56Speaker 04

Oh, sorry. It appears you cannot buy this beer everywhere yet.

• 1:03:00David Imel?

  Not yet.

• 1:03:01Speaker 04

Oh, really? But there is a mailing list.

• 1:03:03Andrew Manganelli?

How many points does David have?

• 1:03:05David Imel?

  10.

• 1:03:05Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, he has 10. I thought he was 12 for some reason.

• 1:03:07Speaker 04

  Oh, no, no.

• 1:03:08Andrew Manganelli?

  Your math did not add.

• 1:03:09David Imel?

  The math ain't math.

• 1:03:10Speaker 01

  The math ain't math, then.

• 1:03:12Speaker 04

What is it called? Flip 'em and read. What do you got? Oh, good guesses.

• 1:03:18Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, that's so really good.

• 1:03:20David Imel?

  I put not beer.

• 1:03:21Speaker 04

No, but I wish it was.

• 1:03:23Andrew Manganelli?

  I put dot.

• 1:03:24Speaker 04

  No, Marquez?

• 1:03:25Speaker 05

  I put nothing.

• 1:03:27Speaker 04

  No. It's called beer.

• 1:03:30David Imel?

  Dang, I thought about that.

• 1:03:33Speaker 05

  You were the closest.

• 1:03:35Speaker 04

  You literally put not beer.

• 1:03:37David Imel?

I was second to the opposite. So what kind of beer is it?

• 1:03:40Speaker 04

  It is a light lager.

• 1:03:42David Imel?

Of course it is. The easiest beer to manufacture.

• 1:03:47Speaker 04

  I'm sure.

• 1:03:47Andrew Manganelli?

I just made a few people mad with that.

• 1:03:49Speaker 04

I think I read somewhere it was like a Japanese-style lager, maybe?

• 1:03:52David Imel?

  I would be into that.

• 1:03:53Speaker 04

Anyway, guys, I think that has been our show, unless anyone else has something. Oh! To that dude who posted in the Not Our MKBHD subreddit, saying like, "Oh, I found your thing." That's the same problem I keep having.

• 1:04:07David Imel?

  Found my thing.

• 1:04:08Speaker 04

That's just a thermometer. It's you put a thermometer in your house and it tells you.

• 1:04:12Speaker 01

I used to have one of those. That just ring a bell. I used to have one of those.

• 1:04:16Speaker 04

Yeah, they're fine, but to me, it's like, no, no, I want forecast. I want high. I'm talking about last week, about the Brookstone Weathercast.

• 1:04:24Speaker 01

But I used to have the thing that that guy posted, where you'd put a little thermometer in your window.

• 1:04:28Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's great, but it's not, it's not, it's not it.

• 1:04:31Speaker 01

  Not the same.

• 1:04:32Speaker 04

  It's not the...

• 1:04:32Speaker 01

  I want to know.

• 1:04:33Andrew Manganelli?

Someone deleted it. It just said, didn't it say like, "Here you go, Alice?"

• 1:04:36Speaker 04

Yeah, which is a deep-cut reference to the Waveform Podcast, but...

• 1:04:41Speaker 01

Well, I think that about does it for our show.

• 1:04:44Speaker 04

  Right?

• 1:04:45Speaker 01

Yeah, that's for sure. No more news.

• 1:04:47Speaker 04

  No more news.

• 1:04:48Speaker 01

No more news. We covered all the news. For sure, nothing will happen between now and Friday. Thanks for watching. Thanks for listening. And again, let us know @SouthBySouthwest what we should do to involve slash incorporate you guys, who will also be at South by Southwest. Let us know in a comment. We'll definitely do the most upvoted thing. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

• 1:05:13Andrew Manganelli?

Maybe cut that part. Anyway, that's it. Catch you guys next week. Peace. Wave from was produced by Adam Alina and Ellis Robyn, a partner of the Vox Media Podcast Network. Our intro to our music was created by Vansil. Bingo. Let's go.

• 1:05:39Andrew Manganelli?

You said, which one seems obvious? And I don't want to say that out loud. If.

• 1:05:43Speaker 04

Well, if it's so obvious, then your boys are probably thinking it too.

• 1:05:46Andrew Manganelli?

  Not these morons.

• 1:05:49Andrew Manganelli?

Not these people with eight times the amount of points that I have.

• 1:05:53Speaker 10
