This is episode number 508 Coffee Conversations with the one and only Caesar. Welcome to the School of Greatness. My name is Lewis Howes, a former pro athlete turned lifestyle entrepreneur. And each week we bring you an inspiring person or message to help you discover how to unlock your inner greatness. Thanks for spending some time with me today. Now let the class begin.

• 0:34Lewis Howes?

Oh yes, my friends, this is a unique episode, something we've never done before. And I'm bringing in the man behind all of it. His name is Caesar. And he is a dear friend of mine that I've known for many years. And he runs the entire business, the entire School of Greatness platform. But there's so much more behind the scenes that I don't really talk about. But I thought I'd bring him in to kind of share some of these ideas behind the scenes of what he does. But also go back in time to learn about how all this even came about. And the mindset about how we've been building this empire and this engine.

• 1:16Lewis Howes?

And Caesar turns the tables. He asks me some questions. I ask him some questions. I share a lot of stories that I've haven't pulled out of the vault in, I don't know, a decade. And share some things that might help you understand how we build the things we do and how it's happened so quickly. So I'm very excited about this one. I would love your feedback on this. Let me know on social media at Lewis Howes and check out the full show notes at lewishowes.com/508. Again, tag me on Instagram. Let me know what you think if you want more of these type of conversations with Caesar for Coffee Conversations. And before we dive in, I want to give a shout out to the fan of the week.

• 2:01Lewis Howes?

The fan of the week who has a review over on iTunes. This is from Liz Tronica who said, "I don't know what I would do without this podcast." Especially the five minute Friday episodes. Usually I'm spent at the end of the week from something or feeling defeated or doubtful about what I'm doing or what my purpose is. Then I listen to this five minute Friday and all of a sudden I feel more hopeful. Also, the guests he brings on create a valuable and uplifting experience. Thank you so much. So Liz Tronica, thank you for being the fan of the week. And if you guys want a chance to be considered and to have your review announced on the podcast, then go ahead and leave a review over on iTunes.

• 2:43Lewis Howes?

Just search School of Greatness in your podcast app on iTunes and leave your review. And there's a lot of things we talk about in this episode. All right, guys, we've got a powerful one. Again, let me introduce to you the first time ever on the podcast. The one and only Caesar with Coffee Conversations.

• 3:06Lewis Howes?

Welcome everyone to this special edition of what should we even call this? Coffee?

• 3:17Lewis Howes?

  Coffee Conversations.

• 3:18Speaker 01

  Coffee Conversations.

• 3:19Lewis Howes?

Coffee Conversations with two receivers, two guys from Ohio. Just trying to live our dreams in LA. So Matt Caesarato, the legendary hashtag Caesar, hashtag Caesar life, hashtag the one and only hashtag.

• 3:39Lewis Howes?

  You're like a bear, man.

• 3:40Speaker 01

You know, it's funny. It's funny because I don't even know that that you hashtag me half the time. So I really don't even know what's going on because I'm more focused on what's going on in your social media.

• 3:50Lewis Howes?

  I know.

• 3:51Speaker 01

And I really don't have social media. My wife handles the social media for our family.

• 3:55Lewis Howes?

Matt doesn't have social media, if you guys can believe it. He has no, do you even have Instagram? You might have an Instagram, right?

• 4:01Speaker 01

I do. I started it and I think I posted six times when my, when my family came in town. Yeah.

• 4:08Lewis Howes?

You started it like, what, six years ago, maybe? Probably, six years. People probably couldn't even find it if they wanted to. That's true. So for those that don't know who Matt is, and I never even call him Matt, I call him Caesar. For those that don't know who Caesar is, he is one of my best friends from college. Two thousand and four, I met this guy, he had white, he had like, uh, like blonde tips in his hair, spiky hair, blonde tips. And, uh, was walking around, strutting around like the big man at campus. Then I walked in, things changed. No, I'm just kidding. He's, he's faster than me, much faster, skinnier, and, uh, wiry, very wiry.

• 4:50Lewis Howes?

But I, I have to give you some, you know, some accolades. You definitely had the best hands on the team. Pretty good hands. And, uh... I didn't drop many balls, and I didn't wear gloves. You were fast. I was fast, okay, fast. For a tall six-four dude, I was okay. I had deceptive speed. I gained speed, gained speed. In the practice, I wasn't that good. Catch you on a fly pattern, goodbye. That's it, that's it. So we're having coffee conversations, conversations with coffee. At, at what time? Eight o'clock at night? Eight o'clock at night. Pacific. Yes, and, uh, this is a format that I've never done. I've always brought someone on to, to interview. One time I had someone interview me. Other times I do solo rounds.

• 5:35Lewis Howes?

But people have always said, you should bring someone on your team on to like, have a conversation with. I don't know if Sarah would ever come on. Sarah would definitely not come on. Sarah would probably never come on. I would love to see Sarah. Sarah would be amazing. She runs my life. She is the executive assistant for me and the business and makes sure everything runs smoothly. She is the HBIC. We call her HBIC, Head BIA in charge. Head Beauty in charge. Head Beauty in charge, yes. And so Matt and I have go way back, twelve or thirteen years, two thousand and four. Long time. And we were super close. We probably hung out every single night, seen my senior year. Absolutely. Probably. My junior year, or my first senior year, I had two senior years. I got injured the first one, I came back.

• 6:19Lewis Howes?

We hung out when I got injured my first senior year a lot because I would just come over to your room and I would stay at you had bunk beds.

• 6:25Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 6:25Lewis Howes?

Matt had bunk beds in college, which was awesome. His own bunk bed, but that he brought to college.

• 6:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:30Lewis Howes?

And I, you had a larger like queen futon in the bottom and I would take over and Matt was.

• 6:38Speaker 01

Then I'd have to go to the top bunk.

• 6:40Lewis Howes?

It was hilarious. So that was, man, most of the days and I would steal all your food. And this is when Matt was like A plus plus. He was like a 5.0 on a 4.0 scale. He had a 5.0 grade point average. Full ride scholarship to Cal State University academic.

• 6:57Speaker 01

  Full tuition.

• 6:57Lewis Howes?

Full tuition scholarship. And I like corrupted him. I was like, let's just go out and party and have fun. And I didn't want to go to school ever and.

• 7:06Speaker 01

I have to say, I think you, you more so rather than corrupted me, you showed me what's possible.

• 7:10Lewis Howes?

  Yes.

• 7:10Speaker 01

  Outside of my comfort zone.

• 7:12Lewis Howes?

  That's right.

• 7:13Speaker 01

I was, I kind of like stuck in my own comfort zone for a long time there.

• 7:16Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 7:17Speaker 01

The opportunity to play and step.

• 7:22Lewis Howes?

  Let loose.

• 7:23Speaker 01

Yeah, exactly. Let loose. Let loose. I mean, I'm going to bring back a little story now. Louis kind of introduced me to what techno and trans music was.

• 7:32Lewis Howes?

  Yes.

• 7:33Speaker 01

And so we would, we would end up going to these clubs and just dancing our faces off. And.

• 7:40Lewis Howes?

  And I didn't drink.

• 7:41Speaker 01

  You did not.

• 7:42Lewis Howes?

Did you drink at all? Maybe a little bit?

• 7:43Speaker 01

  Maybe a little bit.

• 7:44Lewis Howes?

But we would just dance. We'd have fun.

• 7:46Speaker 01

No, actually I didn't because most of the time we're taking my pickup truck out to the club in Columbus, Ohio.

• 7:51Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 7:51Speaker 01

And so, no, I wasn't drinking.

• 7:53Lewis Howes?

And we had, you had football and stuff too. And yeah.

• 7:55Speaker 01

We would have so much fun.

• 7:56Lewis Howes?

  Gosh, it was a blast.

• 7:58Speaker 01

  So, oh my gosh, but.

• 8:00Lewis Howes?

  Good times.

• 8:01Speaker 01

I have to say, you know, I think, you know, when I was thinking about doing this episode with you, you were, you were saying, yeah, come up with some cool questions. And I have to say. I think when Louis came into my life, I, I, I literally pinpoint this specific moment.

• 8:17Lewis Howes?

  Oh man.

• 8:18Speaker 01

It was, not only were we playing football together.

• 8:21Lewis Howes?

  Yes.

• 8:22Speaker 01

But it was just playing the game of life.

• 8:24Lewis Howes?

  God, it was amazing.

• 8:25Speaker 01

  To the.

• 8:26Lewis Howes?

  Fullest.

• 8:26Speaker 01

  Fullest.

• 8:27Lewis Howes?

We didn't have anything either. We didn't have much, you had a lot of money. You were actually like smart at saving your money. You worked like.

• 8:32Speaker 01

I worked hard in the summertime. Yes.

• 8:35Lewis Howes?

Matt was like, get up at 5 a.m., work.

• 8:38Speaker 01

  Working with my dad, yeah.

• 8:39Lewis Howes?

Making like a few hundred bucks a day cash, doing carpentry, doing like, laying cement, doing, uh, what were you guys doing? Like driveways and other stuff like that. And so you, you would come back to school with like, 15 grand in your pocket. You were like the king.

• 8:54Speaker 01

  2,000 dollars cash.

• 8:55Lewis Howes?

  All the time.

• 8:56Speaker 01

  Hidden in my dorm room.

• 8:57Lewis Howes?

It's crazy. You did? I didn't know that. I wanted to done anything anyways.

• 9:01Speaker 01

Roll out on fun, you know, fun occasions or something like that. Yeah.

• 9:05Lewis Howes?

You had all this money, I remember, and you were just like, Matt was the man. He just took care of me while I was like poor. And he was just like, make sure that he's always had a couple 20 bucks here and there, buy food. He always drove the truck. We would put on, you remember the song we listened to all the time?

• 9:20Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 9:24Speaker 01

  Black Eyed Peas, Pump It.

• 9:25Lewis Howes?

  Pump It.

• 9:26Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 9:27Lewis Howes?

Pump It. Yeah, it was such a good song. We would roll out downtown Columbus thinking we were like the hottest guys in town, just like, rolling with our.

• 9:35Speaker 01

Time of our lives, glory days. I mean, that's the truth. Looking back, it's like, gosh, you had nothing really to worry about except for going to class and showing up.

• 9:42Lewis Howes?

I didn't even go to class half the time.

• 9:44Speaker 01

  That's, that was crazy.

• 9:45Lewis Howes?

  I didn't care.

• 9:46Speaker 01

I know, but look at you now, man. I gotta say, I'm proud of what you created.

• 9:48Lewis Howes?

Thanks, man. Yeah, it's been fun. Look at what we've created. It's been a good life, man. 12, 13 years. It's been pretty good.

• 9:55Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 9:56Lewis Howes?

So, yeah, I thought I'd bring Matt, hashtag Caesar Life on to just have a conversation. Talk about, because I pu, you know, I pushed you a lot out of your comfort zone early on. And then we roommated, we were roommates, lived in this, this place above Columbus, in Columbus, Ohio, above a music hall that was $250 a month that we'd split the rent.

• 10:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:18Lewis Howes?

And that was a lot of money for me in that 125 a month. And uh, and then you moved to New York City to go modeling, to go chase modeling hat and slash acting career.

• 10:26Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 10:27Lewis Howes?

How long were you there for?

• 10:28Speaker 01

I was there for about two and a half years.

• 10:29Lewis Howes?

That's it? It feels like it was longer.

• 10:31Speaker 01

  No, no, it was quick.

• 10:33Lewis Howes?

But you just went hard for those two and a half years.

• 10:34Speaker 01

And you went to New York and it was like.

• 10:36Lewis Howes?

We kinda lost touch for like the year.

• 10:38Speaker 01

  We did.

• 10:39Lewis Howes?

With the first year you were in New York, you kinda like met some modeling other dudes and did your thing, working hard and.

• 10:45Speaker 01

It wasn't even that, you were playing arena ball.

• 10:47Lewis Howes?

  I was playing arena football.

• 10:49Speaker 01

You were doing your thing. Yeah, you were, you were hanging out with those guys and we were, you know, staying in touch, but at that time, social media wasn't that big.

• 10:56Lewis Howes?

  There was no social.

• 10:56Speaker 01

  So it was like.

• 10:57Lewis Howes?

We were like texting every few months.

• 10:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:58Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 10:59Speaker 01

And guys, I mean, we didn't need to like call each other every day and go, hey, hey, bro, how you doing?

• 11:02Lewis Howes?

  We didn't do that.

• 11:03Speaker 01

  What are you doing today?

• 11:04Lewis Howes?

  No.

• 11:04Speaker 01

What are you making for dinner, you know?

• 11:05Lewis Howes?

Girls do that, I think, a lot.

• 11:06Speaker 01

Yeah, it's not like, you know, girlfriend, you gotta talk to her every day.

• 11:09Lewis Howes?

And there was no FaceTime then. This was like 2006, 2007, right?

• 11:14Speaker 01

  Yeah, six, seven, yeah.

• 11:15Lewis Howes?

There was no FaceTime, maybe, yeah, I don't think there was FaceTime then. There was iPhones that came out then, but.

• 11:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:21Lewis Howes?

Yeah, and then um, I remember I came out and visited New York. Was it the first time I visited? When I came out there, I can't remember what happened, but I was in Union Square or something.

• 11:30Speaker 01

2008, yes, I remember that vividly.

• 11:33Lewis Howes?

Was that the first time I visited you?

• 11:34Speaker 01

That was the, no, well, the first time you, yeah, first time you visited, actually, New York.

• 11:39Lewis Howes?

  I'd never been in a.

• 11:39Speaker 01

Because you went down in 2007.

• 11:42Lewis Howes?

I went there with my sister one time, I think.

• 11:43Speaker 01

  Did you?

• 11:44Lewis Howes?

  Maybe, I can't remember.

• 11:45Speaker 01

But I came down to Philadelphia, you were going to some.

• 11:47Lewis Howes?

  Oh, you did?

• 11:48Speaker 01

  Event, networking event. Yes, 2008.

• 11:50Lewis Howes?

Yes. Did I come to New York after that?

• 11:53Speaker 01

That, that was like winter of 2008 and then you came to New York fall of 2008 where we went to, in Union Square.

• 12:00Lewis Howes?

So I came to New York first and then I went to Philly. Is that what happened? You sure?

• 12:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:04Lewis Howes?

I went to New York, I was in Union Square, I can't remember how I got there, a flight maybe or something? Bus, I can't remember, train, I got there somehow and I just remember being in Union Square and looking at like, doing a 360 and being like, I have no clue where I am. Like I had no clue what was north, south, east, west, I was like.

• 12:22Speaker 01

  It's an intimidating city, yeah.

• 12:23Lewis Howes?

So lost in there. Now I feel like I know the place inside and out, it's pretty easy.

• 12:27Speaker 01

  Right.

• 12:27Lewis Howes?

But I remember being so lost and then you picked me up in your truck, I think, and I threw like my, my bag in the back of your truck and you're like, we're going. Like you had a bunch of guys with you and you're like, let's go.

• 12:38Speaker 01

  I had plans.

• 12:38Lewis Howes?

I was like exhausted, I would travel.

• 12:41Speaker 01

  Crazy life at that point.

• 12:42Lewis Howes?

Like, let's go, we're doing this. I was like, where are we going? And you're like, just trust me.

• 12:47Lewis Howes?

You didn't even tell me what we were doing. You're like, there's just this crazy cool thing we're gonna go do.

• 12:51Speaker 01

It's funny, I flipped it on its head because that's the stuff you used to do to me.

• 12:54Lewis Howes?

  I did, man.

• 12:55Speaker 01

And then you came out to New York and I was like, watch this.

• 12:57Lewis Howes?

I was like, no, let's just like go inside and like, yeah.

• 13:00Lewis Howes?

Let's like grab a slice of pizza and just chill.

• 13:02Speaker 01

  Right.

• 13:02Lewis Howes?

And we're like, no, let's do this. And I was nervous. And we went to this show called Forza Bruta. That was like the greatest thing I'd ever seen at that time. I was like, blew my mind.

• 13:10Speaker 01

  Live trapeze, cool stuff, interesting.

• 13:14Lewis Howes?

Artistic, moving audience. It was like so inspiring. I mean, just being like in awe. I was like, this is New York in the middle of the Union Square, Forza Bruta. We like went somewhere afterwards and got snack or something. And then we were like driving around. I don't know if that was the night we were driving around? When like your buddy like threw up on the side of the street in the curb?

• 13:34Speaker 01

  He did, yeah.

• 13:36Lewis Howes?

It was crazy. We had some fun nights there, man.

• 13:37Speaker 01

Yeah. He was reliving glory days because he was a little older than us.

• 13:41Lewis Howes?

  He was, yeah.

• 13:42Speaker 01

And I was trying to get him out, so.

• 13:44Lewis Howes?

Were you dating Kendra then? No.

• 13:46Speaker 01

  Ah.

• 13:47Lewis Howes?

I think you met her later.

• 13:47Speaker 01

  I, she was there.

• 13:49Lewis Howes?

  Really?

• 13:49Speaker 01

We were just starting a date.

• 13:52Lewis Howes?

Couple of weeks prior, you started hanging out or something?

• 13:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:54Lewis Howes?

Oh my gosh, man. Really? You guys been together for nine years?

• 13:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:57Lewis Howes?

  No. Two thousand eight?

• 13:59Speaker 01

  Yeah. Two thousand eight.

• 14:01Lewis Howes?

  So that was winter.

• 14:02Speaker 01

  Spring of oh nine.

• 14:03Lewis Howes?

And then there was, was that the same night? There was like Christmas trees out and we were like, your buddy jumped in and freaking?

• 14:08Speaker 01

Yes, a garbage truck and he was about to start it and start going down like.

• 14:11Lewis Howes?

No, it wasn't a garbage truck. It was a, it was like a caterpillar. Wasn't it like a big yellow cat?

• 14:16Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 14:17Lewis Howes?

With like a crane or something? He got in it.

• 14:20Speaker 01

He jumped in and he was going to start this thing and drive it down, I think it was like Broadway or Lexington or something like that. Right next to those, uh, those Christmas trees.

• 14:30Lewis Howes?

And then he was knocking over Christmas trees. Anyways, we're going off tangent here, but bringing back some funny, funny times. So I thought I'd bring Matt on, uh, Caesar to talk about, to have him ask me any questions and see. Cause he now, now bring this full circle. A few years ago, was it two years ago you came on board School of Greatness team?

• 14:48Speaker 01

  Yeah, early twenty fifteen.

• 14:49Lewis Howes?

I was growing the business. I was growing the business and I started, um, just being kind of overwhelmed with.

• 15:00Lewis Howes?

The growth of School of Greatness, the podcast was growing.

• 15:05Lewis Howes?

  I didn't have a book yet, did I?

• 15:07Speaker 01

Uh, you were just finishing the manuscript, yes, at that point.

• 15:10Lewis Howes?

You came on before the launch of the book. I remember just feeling like overwhelmed. I knew things were growing so fast. I wanted to create so much, but I couldn't do it all fast enough. So we started hiring the team and me and Matt were, I was living out here three years prior to you coming on then, I guess. And we were friends, you were working somewhere else. And I remember thinking, God, it'd be amazing for Matt to come on board, but I didn't want it to ruin our friendship. And you didn't want to ruin our friendship either.

• 15:34Speaker 01

I was, I was nervous about that because we, we talked about it even like two years earlier.

• 15:38Lewis Howes?

  We did.

• 15:39Speaker 01

When you had your previous business.

• 15:40Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 15:40Speaker 01

  And.

• 15:41Lewis Howes?

I was like, you should come on and work with us and manage stuff because you're.

• 15:44Speaker 01

Yeah. And I was working with another friend of mine at this agency and we're, you know, working crazy hours and having a blast, but. You know, I wanted to kind of stick around in Los Angeles and when, when you asked again, it was just a perfect opportunity.

• 15:57Lewis Howes?

  It's good timing.

• 15:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 15:59Lewis Howes?

You'd done, you'd kind of quit this contracting job. You'd finished like the term and you had a couple of months where you're like figuring out what you wanted to do. And I was like, just come on for like a few months and like, just pick up some slack for the stuff that I can't do. God, it's been, it was the best decision I've made, man. It's been amazing.

• 16:15Speaker 01

  I hope so.

• 16:15Lewis Howes?

And what I feel like is, I was telling someone like a few weeks ago, I was like, you know, it took you like a year and a half to really kind of like understand the business and. And really kind of step into the role that, you know, we both wanted you to be in because I think you just had to learn so much in general.

• 16:31Speaker 01

That was it. It was very new for me, um, stepping into a role, you know, for a small, you know, small business and. Um, it was a completely different, you know, job experience than I've, that I've ever had.

• 16:42Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 16:43Speaker 01

Yeah, absolutely new frontier for me as far as business, you know, the online business.

• 16:48Lewis Howes?

  You were working corporate America.

• 16:50Speaker 01

I did for a while for a fashion company.

• 16:52Lewis Howes?

We have people on our team who are working, you know, virtually all over the world. So it was like managing people online, not in person.

• 16:58Speaker 01

  It's a lot.

• 16:59Lewis Howes?

It was learning like what are these online courses? Like we have multiple things we can monetize. We're creating content, Facebook ads, like. Social media, stuff that you're not even on.

• 17:09Speaker 01

  Right.

• 17:09Lewis Howes?

And so you had to learn all these things that you're not even doing. Um, and it was a big learning curve.

• 17:14Speaker 01

Yeah. And I was used to working in an office surrounded by, you know, my colleagues in that same office. So working virtually was a whole new experience, but. I think that's a testament to what businesses can create for themselves now. Have that opportunity. And that goes for corporate America. They're moving that way too.

• 17:33Lewis Howes?

  They are.

• 17:34Speaker 01

With hiring virtual people and things like that. And it works. It works because of technology.

• 17:38Lewis Howes?

  It is, man.

• 17:38Speaker 01

It offers a huge amount of opportunity for the employees themselves as well to have that quality of life.

• 17:46Lewis Howes?

I heard somewhere, I can't remember which company it was, maybe you told me this, but there was a company that has all their customer support people on the phone work from home because they don't have to come into like a call center or anything because they said, I think it was the CEO said like, I want them to be happy and comfortable. And if they're happy and comfortable in their home, more than like coming to a cubicle at a work.

• 18:07Speaker 01

  Right.

• 18:08Lewis Howes?

Then they're going to be happier on the phone.

• 18:09Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 18:10Lewis Howes?

So they just get a call that goes like right to their phone through like a, you know, a different number or whatever and they pick up and they can just be in their underwear. They can be hanging out on their couch, but they can be relaxed. And that's the thing with like, you know, running a business and having a team. Everything can change with what's available now and with social media and with this, all the softwares and tools are out there. So I brought Matt on as, because our team was growing and I realized I was spending two or three days of managing energy. And I think that's what a lot of people need to understand of if you're an entrepreneur, if you're starting something. If you want to be a solopreneur, where you just have like a couple of people you're freelance working with, you can do that.

• 18:51Lewis Howes?

But in order to break through the next level, to really get to like the seven, multiple seven figure level, you're going to have to build out a team unless you're just, I don't know, a ninja that can do it all on your own.

• 19:00Speaker 01

No one can do it themselves.

• 19:01Lewis Howes?

Yeah, it's really hard to break through.

• 19:02Speaker 01

Even, even doing what I do, it's a, it's a piece of this engine, this business of yours. And you know, you, I, we couldn't do it ourselves.

• 19:13Lewis Howes?

  No.

• 19:13Speaker 01

If we tried, we have surrounded ourselves with people that we work so well together with. And I mean, that's, that's kind of, you know, a testament to what, you know, the business that you've created for yourself. And you know, back to, you know, bringing on those people virtually or having a team that, you know, can work from home at times and not feel too confined to a space. You know, we could still be as productive. And if anybody says we can't, we're going to, you know, we're going to try and we're going to prove them wrong.

• 19:40Lewis Howes?

  Exactly.

• 19:41Speaker 01

And that's, that's the cool thing about it.

• 19:42Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 19:42Speaker 01

And you know, it kind of brings me back to. I think that what I really wanted to start probing you about and asking questions for, you know, your listeners is, you know, really creating this, you know, you know, if your life was a game, creating the game, you know, the game that you'd want to play every day. Creating that game that you would want to show up, just like we did, playing football, playing our hearts out in college and going, gosh, we get to do this, what we're passionate about, get, you know, excited every single day, even, even practice days.

• 20:14Lewis Howes?

  It was fun, man.

• 20:14Speaker 01

It may not be game day, but practice day.

• 20:16Lewis Howes?

  Practice was fun, too.

• 20:17Speaker 01

Oh, man, we'd have a blast and we'd make it fun.

• 20:19Lewis Howes?

We did make, it would suck some of those days.

• 20:20Speaker 01

Some days, hey, listen, some days when we're doing army crawls.

• 20:23Lewis Howes?

  Oh, it's miserable.

• 20:24Speaker 01

A hundred yards back and forth because we dropped one or two balls during practice. Yeah, that stuff is tough, but that, I mean, you know, it's like yin and yang. You can't have all good every day. You gotta have those tough days that show you how good it is.

• 20:38Lewis Howes?

You gotta go through pain. If you want to be a great athlete and a great football team, you gotta go through so much pain together.

• 20:44Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 20:44Lewis Howes?

  So much training and hurt.

• 20:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:47Lewis Howes?

In order to go into a game that is going to be that challenging, where another team is trying to take your life and your vision away from you, you've got to be willing to go through it with them. It's like going through a 10-round fight, you know?

• 20:58Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 20:59Lewis Howes?

You've gotta be willing to have pain if you want to be a champion.

• 21:01Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 21:02Lewis Howes?

And we, I feel like we, man, we were willing, we, we pushed each other, too.

• 21:06Speaker 01

  Right.

• 21:06Lewis Howes?

At least on the offensive side, we were just like, committed, man.

• 21:10Speaker 01

  Right.

• 21:10Lewis Howes?

Something about it, we thought, we thought we were like all going to be pros or something, or we're just like, we're the best in the country. We just like believed.

• 21:16Speaker 01

You know, I mean, we were Division III, too.

• 21:18Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 21:18Speaker 01

And we, some of us still wanted to go pro. You wanted to go pro. You had that ability. I never had that. I, I loved, you know, competing.

• 21:29Lewis Howes?

  Oh.

• 21:29Speaker 01

Game day, just the, the schedule, the rigor.

• 21:33Lewis Howes?

  Ah, that's great.

• 21:33Speaker 01

That kept me focused in school, in life, to have that, that one thing that was consistent, the practice schedule, you know?

• 21:43Lewis Howes?

Yeah, man. You knew when you were showing up every day at a certain time, you gotta, we had an itinerary. We know we were doing every 10 minutes of practice.

• 21:50Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 21:50Lewis Howes?

  I loved that stuff, man.

• 21:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 21:51Lewis Howes?

  Disappointing.

• 21:52Speaker 01

And let me tell you, scoring a touchdown.

• 21:54Lewis Howes?

It's the best feeling in the world. How many did you score in college?

• 21:56Speaker 01

  Not many, not many.

• 21:58Lewis Howes?

  How many did you score?

• 21:59Speaker 01

I have no idea how many.

• 22:00Lewis Howes?

I can't remember either. I think I scored maybe 10 my senior year, maybe. But yeah, it's fun. It's a good feeling. Just catching a ball, making a play is fun. It doesn't matter if you score or not.

• 22:10Speaker 01

That's it. That's it. You know, being a part of that team. I mean, so back to, you know, what, what, you know, team we've created here.

• 22:16Lewis Howes?

  Yes.

• 22:17Speaker 01

Um, I mean, we've got some spectacular people on the team and having those conversations virtually or in person, it doesn't even really matter.

• 22:25Lewis Howes?

No, doesn't matter where they live.

• 22:27Speaker 01

Exactly. Now, you couldn't, you couldn't play a football game with, with guys virtually, but you know.

• 22:32Lewis Howes?

We can do that in business, though.

• 22:34Speaker 01

  We totally can.

• 22:34Lewis Howes?

And as long as you can, what we do, I think it works and we can probably optimize this as we meet on the video chat as much as we can. We meet as a team once a week on video chat.

• 22:43Speaker 01

  Do have to connect, yes.

• 22:44Lewis Howes?

You have to connect. And then we try to meet in person, you know, with the whole team, at least for our event we do for a week. And then I want to do more like team retreat stuff. So in the future, but.

• 22:54Speaker 01

And not, not get too confined at all times by email, really focusing on even having a phone call.

• 22:59Lewis Howes?

  Yes.

• 23:00Speaker 01

You know, a touch point daily. Um, that's huge. That's key.

• 23:03Lewis Howes?

  Huge.

• 23:04Speaker 01

Just to keep a team, you know, responsible and accountable within each other.

• 23:07Lewis Howes?

  Yep.

• 23:08Speaker 01

So, you know, and then going back to, you know, the routine, the, the physical routine that continually gets you up every morning. I mean, we've started something new recently.

• 23:19Lewis Howes?

  Yeah. Six thirty AM runs.

• 23:20Speaker 01

Six thirty AM runs. So I want to ask you, I mean, what's, what's opened up for you with, with doing stuff like that?

• 23:26Lewis Howes?

  Six thirty AM runs.

• 23:27Speaker 01

You know, because, you know, we've kind of gotten to a, a routine where it's more eight AM, you know? And so we just, we, we just wanted to just break it up and go, what can we do to shake things up a little bit?

• 23:37Lewis Howes?

Yeah. Six thirty. It's good, man. I, anytime we create structure in the business or our personal lives or our fitness, I feel like that's when you can optimize the game you set for yourself.

• 23:48Speaker 01

  Right.

• 23:49Lewis Howes?

Just like in sports, without the structure and, and we were talking about this the other day, like we used to run four hundred meter sprints. After game days on Sundays.

• 24:00Speaker 01

  The day after.

• 24:01Lewis Howes?

  Day after.

• 24:01Speaker 01

Our coaches had us get up smart.

• 24:03Lewis Howes?

What time was it? Like 8 a.m. or something? It was like you couldn't stay out late and party too late because you had to, or you did and you were, so some guys were like hungover. You're dragging.

• 24:12Speaker 01

  Dragging.

• 24:13Lewis Howes?

Dragging on doing these four hundreds and they suck because you're beat up, you're sore, you're injured, you're hurt. You know, you got bruised bones and we would run sprints and they, what was it? Under 75? It was, it was fast, man.

• 24:26Speaker 01

That was for linemen, under 75.

• 24:28Lewis Howes?

  Oh my, was it 74?

• 24:29Speaker 01

  72.

• 24:30Lewis Howes?

It was fast, man. Repeat four hundreds with like a minute break or something. It was stupid. But I think, uh, having that structure, this is why I like doing stuff like this where we're gonna have a 6:30 because it's just like, if we're not pushing ourselves in every area, and obviously there's gonna be off seasons because you can't do that consistently every single day, but if we're not creating a game for ourselves and structure for ourselves, we're just gonna be lazier throughout the day. We're not gonna be as consistent and committed. Last two weeks when we started doing that, it just felt like, man, I was so much more productive, focused on the things that mattered. You were the one who was telling me like, where did all these, this energy come from? You were like, because we were, we were having conversations with other people, getting ideas. And I was like, okay, let's do this. Let's execute, execute.

• 25:14Lewis Howes?

And I feel like it just keeps your body, your mind sharp when you structure at least workouts for yourself. And, uh, it doesn't have to be early, but I think you just have to have some type of game with your workouts. Otherwise it becomes hard.

• 25:29Speaker 01

And you have to be physically active. You have to do something to invigorate the body in order to activate the mind in my opinion.

• 25:36Lewis Howes?

I think so. We get our best ideas when we're running together too.

• 25:38Speaker 01

Absolutely, absolutely. Some of my best phone calls are when I'm walking around, moving, you know? So, yeah, I, I agree. I think it's, it's opened up a lot. I mean, I was kicking myself. Like you said, you were coming every day, four or five ideas. And I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Easy. You know, I was like, having to pump the brakes at that point.

• 25:57Lewis Howes?

We didn't build the team. Let's get more people on so we can execute.

• 25:59Speaker 01

  Yes, yes.

• 26:00Lewis Howes?

Yeah. And I think it's important. I think, you know, it kind of bring back of. Us going out in college a lot, we would make it a game, just like at night, anything. That's what I love to do is like make life a game.

• 26:12Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 26:13Lewis Howes?

And like anything, when I'm going on a trip, when I'm going out to a networking event, I give myself a challenge or a game. I'm like, okay, I'm gonna talk to five strangers and um, try some silly things. You'll be amazed of what you can do when you just actually try it.

• 26:28Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 26:29Lewis Howes?

Even if you think it's ridiculous. We've done, I've done so many things where whenever I'm uncomfortable or nervous or scared or something, I try to go master the fear. And I'll go, you know, I remember talking to girls when I moved to New York City. I did this thing. I was like, okay, I'm gonna create a challenge. I don't know if I even told you this. I call it the red rose challenge.

• 26:49Speaker 01

Oh, no. I actually have never heard.

• 26:51Lewis Howes?

  Yes.

• 26:52Speaker 01

  The red rose.

• 26:52Lewis Howes?

I don't know if I've actually told this to anyone on a podcast. I remember going to New York, wasn't sure if I was gonna live there. I went for one month. I just ended things with my ex-girlfriend. And I was like, hmm, I wonder what would be a good way to meet girls in New York. And I was kind of intimidated by girls in New York because it was like a, you know, new place. And I was like, I'm gonna do this thing. I'm gonna call it the red rose project. And I was thinking of doing it as an experiment where I would write about it or like journal about it or do something. Like I was thinking it would be some experiment that I talk about online. And what I did is I bought a rose every morning because there was like a flower shop next to my apartment I was staying in. I bought a red rose every morning. And I carried it with me until I found a girl that intimidated me. That was like super attractive that I just couldn't keep my eyes off of.

• 27:37Lewis Howes?

And I was gonna go up and give it to her. And not ask for anything, but just like give it to her and give her a compliment. And I remember doing that and it was like the second girl, I think, like wouldn't even look at me. She just kept walking, gave me like the worst stare down. And I was like, ew, this is not a good start for me. Like, I was like, no, this is not feel good to be like rejected. That's like my biggest fear is like being rejected when I didn't have the confidence. And then I just kept doing it like every day, the first like couple of weeks. And I remember I I I met a girl, I gave one to a girl like a waitress. I was like, this is an easy out for me. I'm gonna give it to the waitress who's waiting on me. But I ended up having like a good, you know, friendship with her and like build a relationship and had good times.

• 28:21Lewis Howes?

And it allowed me to kind of overcome something, do something nice for someone and it created a game for myself. And so I think I try to do that in every context, whether it be, we do this with fitness. We're like, okay, we're gonna run. Uh, you know, we're gonna sprint this street, then jog, sprint and jog. We're gonna go up the hill this time. We're, we always create games in fitness. That's why I try to do it with you in business too. I'm like, okay, what are the numbers this month? What can we try to get this week? What can we try to hit this month? And create a game around it. And I think if you're not creating a game around your life, then it just becomes more like work.

• 28:50Speaker 01

  Right.

• 28:51Lewis Howes?

It becomes hard. It's already challenging enough.

• 28:53Speaker 01

  Right.

• 28:54Lewis Howes?

Doing something. You might as well create a fun game around it to enjoy the process.

• 28:58Speaker 01

Absolutely. And anybody could do that.

• 29:00Lewis Howes?

  Anyone.

• 29:00Speaker 01

Anyone. There's a method to that madness.

• 29:03Lewis Howes?

  Anyone, man.

• 29:03Speaker 01

  I mean, there really is.

• 29:05Lewis Howes?

So create that, the answer to that question or the topic is to create games in every situation. In your relationships, how can you have fun? In a crappy situation.

• 29:14Speaker 01

  Right.

• 29:14Lewis Howes?

Maybe you don't want to go see your in-laws or whatever. Um, but how can you make it a game and have fun around it? And how can you have fun with your relationship, your partner, your health, your finances, like finances is hard for people to talk about.

• 29:27Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 29:28Lewis Howes?

People are scared to talk about how much they have or just talk about money in general. Like, how can you make it a fun game?

• 29:34Speaker 01

  Right.

• 29:34Lewis Howes?

As opposed to this being this thing that you're constantly afraid of, but now you embrace it and you allow for more money to come your way.

• 29:41Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 29:42Lewis Howes?

Create a game in your life.

• 29:43Speaker 01

See, that's funny. You just said something there that struck me because, you know, there is a fear around obviously money and it's, it's more so the, the, the fear of judgment. You know, with not being transparent and, and, and well.

• 29:57Lewis Howes?

  So many people are afraid.

• 29:58Speaker 01

Take that back to, yeah, to not be transparent because, because, you know, they're surrounded by that fear.

• 30:03Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 30:03Speaker 01

Whether it's money or, or whatever, whatever part of their life that they're fearful of, of opening up about it.

• 30:08Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 30:09Speaker 01

Um, so I think, you know, the one thing I also attribute to, to you is, you know, I think. Your ability to just embrace transparency is unbelievable with being open with what you're able to get on Facebook Live and share with anybody and everybody at any given moment. I mean, that's huge and what it's created for you too. I think that there's a true testament there to be spoken about because a lot of people in this, this age of social media are, you know, there's, there's this apprehension of, of wanting to, you know, I guess, you know, be transparent. They, they want to, you know, separate church and state, so to speak.

• 30:50Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 30:50Speaker 01

You know, they want their personal lives to be separate than their business lives. And why, you know, I mean, I'm, I, maybe I've drank the Kool-Aid, but you know, I, I used to be that, you know?

• 31:01Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 31:01Speaker 01

You'd have your colleagues and your coworkers.

• 31:04Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 31:04Speaker 01

But then you'd have the friends, you know, that you'd, you'd call it, you know, in the evenings and hang out with and sometimes, you know, you'd hang out.

• 31:11Lewis Howes?

  Blend. Yeah.

• 31:12Speaker 01

So I think this day and age, you just, you just have to, you have to embrace that.

• 31:16Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 31:17Speaker 01

  You really do.

• 31:17Lewis Howes?

I think you get to create the game you want it to be. I mean, there's some big personalities on social media that don't show their, their partners, their kids. They keep that separate still. And I think that's, I think it's not right or wrong either way. You can do whatever makes sense for you.

• 31:30Speaker 01

I think it's something that I'll always do for myself.

• 31:32Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 31:32Speaker 01

I don't know if, if that just comes down to personality or, or choice.

• 31:35Lewis Howes?

Your wife may not, but you will. Yeah.

• 31:37Speaker 01

Yeah. She, she's, she's more comfortable with, with stuff like that. And it's not that I'm uncomfortable sharing my personal life. I mean, I'm, I'm here right now, but I, I would say that.

• 31:46Lewis Howes?

  No videos still.

• 31:47Speaker 01

No, no video. I'm not shy with, with the camera, but I mean, I, I would say that, you know, it's, it's cool to see what you've created. So I think my next question is kind of going to go around that. I mean, if you are someone who is wanting to take their business, take, you know, their entrepreneurial journey to the next level, you know, where is a good place to start with, with opening up with what's going on with you personally? I mean, what do you really share? Where, where do you kind of?

• 32:17Lewis Howes?

Here's the thing, you know, it's interesting because part of me.

• 32:24Lewis Howes?

The more vulnerable and open you become, the more you're to attract an audience of people that can relate to you.

• 32:32Lewis Howes?

And I think when it's scary though, because you want to make sure you do it in an authentic way where it's not like reaching out for help for the world and like a woe is me all the time of like, oh, I'm down and out, but more of like, here's the challenges I'm facing in my life and talking about it in a way that works, a way that still is like on your brand and you know, with still good images and videos and things like that you're putting out content wise, but also just revealing. The most popular episode I have was when I opened up about the sexual abuse when I was a kid and there might be a couple of other podcast, the episodes have done, done more because we have video now and things like that, but at the time that was

• 33:13Lewis Howes?

the biggest spike of traffic I've ever seen on my website, most downloaded podcast by, by far, but also the biggest impact in people's like in perception of me and their opinion of me. I got hundreds of emails and we still get messages from people listening to it from three years ago. I think it was three years ago. Where they'll find it and they listen to it and they're like, man, I had you all wrong. Like I had you wrong. And I'm so inspired by you sharing, by opening up on something that's so vulnerable for you. Yeah. And I think I did it in a way that was again thoughtful and intentional. It wasn't like just

• 33:52Lewis Howes?

calling out to the world or something about my challenges or my problems. So I think you gotta be thoughtful about it, but we, I met with a couple of students of ours, school grad and academy members in Miami this weekend. And we were talking about this as well. Like they've got a, if you want to attract an audience, you gotta be real. You gotta open up with so much content out there. If you're not opening up and being super raw in a way that works.

• 34:18Lewis Howes?

Then it's gonna be hard to connect if you just look perfect all the time.

• 34:21Speaker 01

  Right.

• 34:21Lewis Howes?

So the more I talk about it, and it's part of the text, the storytelling. The storytelling of revealing things. Every time I post an image or a quote or whatever, and then I share what I've been struggling with, or what I went through to get to where I'm at. That gets the most engagement. That gets the most comments. People are like, yes, I, I feel you. I get you. Like, I needed this even more than ever. Like, I feel like I'm going through this right now, people will say. So I think when I, and it's just become second nature. I'm just like, you know, we're all going through stuff. I was revealing stuff.

• 34:55Lewis Howes?

On a call, on a, on a live training call we have with one of our programs as well, where I was literally wrapped in a blanket, like with a white t-shirt, hair was all messed up. Someone was asking me a question, and I was like, to be honest, guys, I just gotta let you know, like, stuff has been challenging over the last few weeks, and I'm, I don't know if I have the answer. Like, I've just been in the funk.

• 35:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:16Lewis Howes?

And people were like, dude, thank you, because

• 35:19Speaker 01

  That's okay.

• 35:20Lewis Howes?

It's hard to connect with people that just always have it all together.

• 35:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:23Lewis Howes?

It's really hard. So, I think being vulnerable in the sense of real with the challenges you're facing, but also coming back and saying, you know what? I'm facing these challenges, but I'm taking action. I'm not just allowing myself to stay stuck. When you sit there and say, here's all the problems I'm going through, and I don't know what to do. Someone help me. That's not a good look. But when you say, here's what I'm going through, I'm really struggling. You know what? Here's the action steps I'm taking. And man, it feels good to like, see a little bit of progress.

• 35:55Speaker 01

  That's it.

• 35:55Lewis Howes?

That is gonna inspire people in your industry and your space to be like, huh. Okay, I can resonate with him or her. I'm going through the same thing. I see the steps they're taking. I'm gonna start taking those steps. And I think that's the game changer.

• 36:10Lewis Howes?

Yeah. Not reaching out for help and being like, here's all my problems. Someone have pity on me and like this to make me feel better. No. What are you gonna do to step up?

• 36:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:18Lewis Howes?

How are you gonna move forward to improve your life?

• 36:20Speaker 01

That's it. And embrace your story too. I mean, that's, that's magic right there.

• 36:24Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 36:24Speaker 01

We all have a unique story to tell.

• 36:26Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 36:27Speaker 01

And I think that's, that's a huge part of, of also what, what you've been able to create is just embracing your story.

• 36:33Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 36:33Speaker 01

We all have a life story. We all have our own. Motion picture event happening every single day.

• 36:39Lewis Howes?

  That's it.

• 36:40Speaker 01

And, um, you know, really stepping in to sharing that story and then, you know, creating the, the, the progress, the positive progress every single day, rather than being caught up in the, my gosh, it, you know, this hurt or that hurt or this woe, that woe, you know? I think that's the most important thing. I mean,

• 37:00Lewis Howes?

Yeah. And even if your story isn't as dramatic or crazy as maybe some other people you'd notice, or you know about, there's other people that I'm like, man, people have gone through a lot worse than me and created this incredible success like Oprah or The Rock or whatever. I'm like, is my story really that inspiring or that interesting? And I've shared my story so much over the last 10 years since like kind of my transition point of

• 37:23Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 37:23Lewis Howes?

moving from sports to business, that I'm like, is it boring now? Is it interesting enough? It's like, oh, the guy who got injured who went into like LinkedIn, like, is that interesting enough? But it's like, that's my story and I'm going to use it and embrace it because it's

• 37:35Speaker 01

  Embrace it right there.

• 37:36Lewis Howes?

  That's all I am.

• 37:37Speaker 01

  That's it.

• 37:37Lewis Howes?

That's all I am. I can't like try to be something I'm not and I just try to relate to the people that are interested in, in my story and connect on that level and, and I'm not trying to act like someone I'm not. So.

• 37:48Speaker 01

  No, that's it.

• 37:49Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 37:49Speaker 01

I mean, look at here, shoot, we got a podcast happening right now and, you know, your story is still, I think it's still completely relevant to anybody and everybody.

• 38:01Lewis Howes?

  Right.

• 38:02Speaker 01

You know, yes, some, some may say it's more dramatic than what they have going on. Come on. I, I, it's a human story. It's beautiful.

• 38:10Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 38:11Speaker 01

Whatever your story is, embrace it.

• 38:13Lewis Howes?

  Mm-hmm.

• 38:13Speaker 01

There's beauty in, in even the most mundane.

• 38:16Lewis Howes?

  That's true.

• 38:16Speaker 01

You know, even in the, the little quirks that you have, or even in the little doubts that you have about yourself, the little fears. It's not really focusing too much on that fear, but the step out of that, you know, the next step beyond that. So.

• 38:31Lewis Howes?

Yeah. Yeah. It's a good one. Well, how many other questions you got?

• 38:34Speaker 01

I've got a couple more questions here.

• 38:36Lewis Howes?

  All right.

• 38:37Speaker 01

So we've embraced, you know, transparency and not everybody has to do that.

• 38:42Lewis Howes?

Yeah, you don't have to be super vulnerable and like transparent all the time. It's not for everyone, but I think if you're just starting out, I think that's the quickest way to, to connect with people because when we're vulnerable in any way. Other people are allowing themselves to open up as well. You're allowing that for other people. So I think if that's when you're just starting out, I think start with that. And talk about transformational stuff and anything in your, your life that you're trying to transform. Take people on a journey. Here's where I'm at, where I'm at and I'm not happy. Health, finances, relationships, spirituality. I'm not happy in this situation. So for the next 90 days, here's the steps I'm going to take and I'm going to document the journey.

• 39:24Speaker 01

  Right.

• 39:25Lewis Howes?

The challenge that I'm taking myself, the call to adventure, right? It's like the hero's journey. I'm going to take you guys on the next 30, 60, 90 days. And I'm going to share with you each day, the actions I'm going to take each day, the successes and each day, the failures, the challenges that I've faced, that I'm working on. I think if you just do that for 30 or 90 days, that's a great way to get started. And a great way to build an audience around a challenge for yourself.

• 39:52Speaker 01

Right. I think it's also, you, you said it, you know, it's, it's being the hero of your journey.

• 39:57Lewis Howes?

  That's it.

• 39:57Speaker 01

Accepting that you are that hero.

• 39:59Lewis Howes?

You're the director. You're writing it. You're directing it.

• 40:02Speaker 01

  Starring in.

• 40:03Lewis Howes?

  Starring it.

• 40:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:04Lewis Howes?

  Producing it.

• 40:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:06Lewis Howes?

Start off like a 30, 60, 90 day challenge where you're transforming some part of your life.

• 40:13Speaker 01

  Right.

• 40:13Lewis Howes?

That is inspiring. So many people have done that. A lot of people in the health world have done this. Natalie Jill did this.

• 40:18Speaker 01

  Right.

• 40:18Lewis Howes?

She was overweight. She was a new mom, divorced, corporate job that she got fired from. And she took people on a journey of just documenting, here's what I'm going to do every single day. I'm going to learn how to eat right. I'm going to learn how to work out the right way. I'm going to learn how to sleep, take care of myself, recover. And I'm going to take photos and videos and document it and share the things I'm learning and show you the progress. That inspires people. You can do that in any category, health and wellness.

• 40:44Speaker 01

  Right.

• 40:45Lewis Howes?

Fitness, business, talk about like, okay, I'm going to try to earn a dollar today. I'm going to try to earn two tomorrow, five, 10, 20, whatever. And I'm going to show you the steps and what I'm learning. This works for every, Pat Flynn from Smart Passive Income did that in the finance place. You can do this in spirituality, go on a journey of like, I'm gonna try different meditations, I'm gonna go to different churches, and I'm gonna share what I'm learning about, why I'm here, and what this whole world is about.

• 41:09Speaker 01

Yeah, and what's, what's the journey? I mean, the journey is to know thyself, too. I mean, that's, that's a huge part of what life is. What fulfills you? What makes you happy? What your values, your principles?

• 41:18Lewis Howes?

  Exactly.

• 41:19Speaker 01

The things that make you tick and run, and, and live joyously. So, I mean, knowing thyself, I mean, you, you gotta build that into your routine every day.

• 41:27Lewis Howes?

  That's it.

• 41:27Speaker 01

You know? I mean, what parts really truly make you happy? You may not have to get up like us at 6:30 in the morning, and find joy out of absolutely exhausting ourselves on a quick three mile run.

• 41:39Lewis Howes?

  Yes.

• 41:39Speaker 01

You know, and finishing uphill, just to feel that, you know, gasp of, of whatever it is. You know, wanting to take ourselves back to, you know, playing college football, who knows, whatever it is.

• 41:50Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 41:50Speaker 01

But it brings us some sort of fulfillment and joy and excitement out of life. So I think knowing what is going to get you up excited to play the game, I mean.

• 41:59Lewis Howes?

  Game of life, baby.

• 42:00Speaker 01

  That's it.

• 42:00Lewis Howes?

  Game of life!

• 42:03Speaker 01

We gotta watch, isn't that an actual board game?

• 42:06Lewis Howes?

  Probably.

• 42:06Speaker 01

The game of life, oh shoot.

• 42:08Lewis Howes?

  It's all good.

• 42:09Speaker 01

  Oh, man.

• 42:11Lewis Howes?

  Next question, Caesar.

• 42:12Speaker 01

  So, here we are.

• 42:17Speaker 01

You know, how important is it for you? Because I've seen this in your personality.

• 42:24Lewis Howes?

  Yes.

• 42:24Speaker 01

You focus on the things that really bring you joy, you know, and, and find ways to give back as well, doing the things that bring you joy. So, I guess, how important is it for you personally

• 42:40Speaker 01

to do the things that actually bring you joy on a daily basis?

• 42:45Lewis Howes?

It's so important. It's probably the most important thing. I don't know if it's just because. I just, you know, I look back at my childhood and if you look from the outside looking in, everything looks okay. We had a home, my dad had a good job. You know, we were pretty healthy. My siblings were doing well in school. They were all smart and talented. But there was just a lot of inner conflict that I faced and a lot of stress with my parents. Every day was stress. Even if they weren't screaming at each other that day, there was just like tension I just felt all the time. And as the youngest of four, I didn't feel like I had any of my siblings to kind of like, I wasn't like close with any of them.

• 43:30Lewis Howes?

Until I was like 12, maybe 12, 13, I became more like adult-like, so I was more acceptable in the siblinghood or whatever. So I didn't have any like siblings to look, look, to connect with, to talk to about my feelings. My parents were too in their stress of their daily lives of work and taking care of us and taking care of each other. And their, their marriage was never in a good place. And I was just always like scared. I was just really scared and didn't have much fun as a kid. There were moments, but I just remember feeling an overwhelming sense of fear and insecurities and uncertainty.

• 44:12Lewis Howes?

And I think when I finally, when I made the decision to go to Principia Upper School, this, this private boarding school in St. Louis, my life changed because I allowed myself to have more fun. I had friends every day. I was living in a dorm with like 10 other guys. It was pretty strict, but I mean, I was just like so happy to kind of get away from this stressful environment. But I don't think it was my parents' fault or anything. It was just like, that's just how things were back then. And they were doing their best. And I was just so happy to be in a different place that I was like, I'm gonna make the most of this and have fun and just meet people and make friends. And I think I just took that on after high school. I took it on in college. I was just like, I'm gonna try to have as much fun as possible,

• 44:56Lewis Howes?

have as many friends as possible, be good to people, because I just remember how crappy it was. Feeling inside again, my parents were great and they always like told us they loved us. They always took care of us. But it was just like this sense of like uncertainty and fear around their relationship and just tension, man. It was just always, it was just tension constantly.

• 45:19Speaker 01

But you took that step. I mean, you stepped out of that place and, and I mean.

• 45:24Lewis Howes?

Yeah, I mean, I was just, yeah, I just started to realize like, man, I just want to have fun. I want to have fun. I want it to be lighter.

• 45:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 45:30Lewis Howes?

And I want, I don't want to fear all these things. And so that's why I just said, I'm going to take on these fears. I'm going to become the Batman of every fear.

• 45:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 45:38Lewis Howes?

Whatever my bat is that I'm afraid of, I'm going to become the bat. Cause I just didn't want to feel sick and tired of feeling these things anymore.

• 45:48Speaker 01

It's like you gave that rose early on.

• 45:50Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, man.

• 45:50Speaker 01

  Each one of your fears.

• 45:51Lewis Howes?

I did, man. Yeah. It's like my red rose.

• 45:53Speaker 01

I'm gonna make you love me.

• 45:55Lewis Howes?

Exactly, man. I just didn't want to fear anymore. And I think, uh, I just made a decision. I was just like, screw it. What's the worst that could happen?

• 46:04Speaker 01

Well, the Louis I met back in college was fearless. Holy cow. He would roll up into a room and just be like,

• 46:12Lewis Howes?

I would, man. I didn't care if I knew people. I didn't know people. I would introduce myself to everyone. I remember going into my senior year. This was a big thing for me. Going into my senior year in high school, I was like the young kid who was on all the varsity teams from freshman year to junior year. I was always like younger than everyone, right? Then when I was a senior, all my friends were gone.

• 46:35Lewis Howes?

They'd all graduated because I was always like the younger one on and I was a starter, like sophomore and junior year and sports teams. So now I had to step up and like, I was like, who are my friends? Who am I? I kind of had to reinvent myself again. I remember going into senior year thinking crap. All my close friends that I was in like this jock clique are gone. Now what? I was like, do I just hang out with all the freshmen, sophomore, junior jocks? I was like, that's not really what I want to do anymore. I want to become friends with everyone. So I made a challenge for myself. I remember this in the summer in St. Louis. I was like, I'm going to. Try out for everything. I was in choir. I tried out for the, the, the school musical.

• 47:18Lewis Howes?

I was like, I'm gonna become friends with math people, musicians, singers, actors, artists. I'm gonna take, I took art class. Wow. I did, I took tap dancing class my senior year. I remember I took tap dancing class. I did everything and I was like, I'm just gonna be friends with everyone and try to like meet people where they're at as opposed to having everyone need to know like who I am and I'm like the sports guy. And I was like, I wanna learn about other people. That's probably when school greatness really started to develop. Yeah, I was just about to say that, yeah. It was like learning from everyone and I was like, okay, I'm not gonna judge people. I'm gonna say hi to people that I would never say hi to and just ask them questions. And I had some of the best friendships from people that I never would have hung out with before.

• 48:01Lewis Howes?

I think a lot of them were like, you know, kind of guarded originally, but I just said, you know what? Screw it. I have nothing to lose. It's my last year here. If I don't, if it doesn't work out, whatever. The best thing I ever did for myself was to not. Put yourself out there. Yeah, was to not like judge people to the best of my ability and to just be like open to learning from people. And there were some amazingly good people that I've lost touch with now. But, um, at the time, it was just, man, they were close. I was closer to them than my sports friends, some of them. Yeah. And I think that was the key is like learning to meet all types of people. People who can do nothing for you, have conversations with them. The janitors at my school, I've built a relationship with.

• 48:44Lewis Howes?

You know, waiters at restaurants, I would just openly ask them questions and learn about what their big dreams were and what their challenges are. Anyone and everyone, I just wanted to learn more about them. Yeah. And I was obsessed with understanding people and understand what made them tick, what they were thinking about. Yeah. I haven't really told any people this stuff, but yeah, this is, this is when it all kind of started probably. Senior year, high school.

• 49:10Speaker 01

So you just opened up there. I mean, I mean, you embraced, I guess, partly becoming this networking.

• 49:17Lewis Howes?

I was. That's when the networking began.

• 49:19Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 49:20Lewis Howes?

  Senior year.

• 49:21Speaker 01

Yeah. And it took you stepping into, you know, being a senior, being a leader, because that's, that's the first time you really,

• 49:27Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 49:27Speaker 01

you know, when you get to that senior year, you're forced to become a leader. You're forced to, you know, stop being closed off. You can't be closed off.

• 49:35Lewis Howes?

It was not comfortable. I didn't like being the captain. I actually didn't like being the senior. I liked being the freshman who could just like show up and play hard and be like in shock everyone. And that seniors could like run the show and I could just be like the playmaker.

• 49:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:49Lewis Howes?

And just be like, gosh, that kid is so good. He's gonna be amazing when he's older. And this senior year was really uncomfortable because I, I was never comfortable with my own voice. I was always scared to like talk in public. I was scared to talk in front of my classmates, anything. So talking in like the locker room was not my thing. I was not like this, all right, guys, here's what we gotta do. Rah rah, speech people up. I didn't have that in me. So it was terrifying to be the captain. But um, that's kind of like, a lot of the times it was just like, if you're the best player, you're the captain usually. If you're just like a good enough dude.

• 50:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 50:22Lewis Howes?

Um, so I was one of the captains, but I remember just being like, I didn't even want that. I just wanted to be the playmaker and just like, you do your job and I'm gonna do my job. I didn't want to get on anyone.

• 50:31Speaker 01

That's a pivotal point in your life that you're talking about there. You, you went head on to the things that made you uncomfortable.

• 50:37Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 50:37Speaker 01

You know, embracing your fears, going right at them and going, hey, I'm gonna figure it out sooner or later.

• 50:43Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 50:44Speaker 01

  Wow, very cool.

• 50:45Lewis Howes?

I didn't like that part. Luckily, the next year going to college, freshman year, I got to do it all over again. I just got to be the playmaker.

• 50:53Speaker 01

So you fell back into it?

• 50:54Lewis Howes?

Well, I mean, why did I was, it was a whole nother intimidating thing, man. I, I didn't understand the game at this, at college level. It was like,

• 51:02Speaker 01

  That's true.

• 51:02Lewis Howes?

I didn't understand defenses and offenses and how to read things. I was just like, go to my spot and catch the ball in high school. Cause I'd just started sophomore year. So for me, it was, It was more just like I needed to study every single day for hours at night, game film and the plays because I couldn't even remember them. It was just so challenging. So trying to be a leader was not even on my mind. It was just like, don't mess up this play because our coach screamed at us. He was one of those guys that just always wanted to make you feel like a piece of crap.

• 51:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 51:31Lewis Howes?

And he would scream at me at any time I missed a step, anytime I dropped a ball, anything. It was just like, Louis, you suck. And so for me, I was just like, I just need to make sure I stay on this team and like,

• 51:41Speaker 01

  Right.

• 51:41Lewis Howes?

I don't want to get yelled at. That's all I focused on, which is not a good way to lead by fear.

• 51:47Speaker 01

  No, I agree.

• 51:48Lewis Howes?

It's not a good way to make people feel like they can't make, you know, make mistakes.

• 51:52Speaker 01

  Yeah, I don't think that's, that's a quality in the best leaders.

• 51:55Lewis Howes?

  No.

• 51:56Speaker 01

  You know?

• 51:56Lewis Howes?

  It's effective for people.

• 51:59Speaker 01

  It's effective.

• 52:00Lewis Howes?

  But it's not healthy.

• 52:01Speaker 01

  But it's, yeah, it's, it's hurtful.

• 52:03Lewis Howes?

  So hurtful.

• 52:04Speaker 01

It's hurtful for the greater good. It's hurtful to another person. I mean, that's, we've all, we've all had coaches or relationships or experiences where we've been, I mean, going through that, you know, having someone, you know, shouting and screaming and using fear as a way of motivation.

• 52:23Speaker 01

Yeah. No, I, I think, you know, in the times that I've had that same thing.

• 52:27Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, it sucks.

• 52:28Speaker 01

I had a high school, high school football coach.

• 52:30Lewis Howes?

And college a little bit, you had that.

• 52:31Speaker 01

Uh, not really. I mean, no, not in college.

• 52:34Lewis Howes?

  Not as bad.

• 52:34Speaker 01

  No, not in college.

• 52:35Lewis Howes?

Collins wasn't that bad on you?

• 52:36Speaker 01

  No, he was great.

• 52:37Lewis Howes?

  Oh, that's good.

• 52:38Speaker 01

  He was great.

• 52:39Lewis Howes?

  That's good.

• 52:39Speaker 01

You know, he wasn't, he, he didn't shout, but high school, I remember I, I had a coach unnamed, but um, he was, he motivated by, by straight out just intimidation.

• 52:50Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 52:51Speaker 01

And it was, it's, I mean, I have to say in that moment, I think I, I rose to the occasion.

• 52:56Lewis Howes?

  Hmm, that's good.

• 52:56Speaker 01

Um, but in that moment, I also learned, early on, that's not who I want to be.

• 53:02Lewis Howes?

  No.

• 53:02Speaker 01

That's not what I want to create.

• 53:04Lewis Howes?

  No.

• 53:04Speaker 01

That's not the type of leader I want to be.

• 53:06Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 53:07Speaker 01

You know, um, and, and I, I mean, I hope that that's kind of instilling.

• 53:11Lewis Howes?

The opposite of that, you're the calm, collected, organized.

• 53:16Speaker 01

Yeah, I, I, fear is not a good motivator. It just, it does, it doesn't make sense.

• 53:20Lewis Howes?

  No.

• 53:21Speaker 01

You know, allow people to step into their greatness and shine. You know.

• 53:26Lewis Howes?

Still the whole people accountable though.

• 53:27Speaker 01

Absolutely, absolutely. Responsibility and accountability is key in creating, you know, great productivity. And, you know, getting work done.

• 53:36Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 53:37Speaker 01

And setting up those, those failsafes, those checks and balances in, in a, in a business and a company. That's, that's what the large corporations have done since back in the day when Henry Ford started.

• 53:48Lewis Howes?

  Assembly line.

• 53:49Speaker 01

Yeah, created the assembly line and then what forty hour work week and all that sort of stuff. Um, to create good productivity out of, out of employees, but, um, no fears, fear is not the way.

• 54:00Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 54:01Speaker 01

But going at your fears, I mean, that's, that's powerful.

• 54:05Lewis Howes?

  That's very powerful.

• 54:06Speaker 01

You know, so that's basically opened up your joy that allowed you to, you know.

• 54:09Lewis Howes?

Because fear is the, uh, it sucks away the joy.

• 54:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 54:14Lewis Howes?

When we're afraid, we can't have fun.

• 54:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 54:16Lewis Howes?

If we're afraid of something, how are you gonna have fun? You're just crippled by this. Uncertainty by this fear of whatever failure or looking stupid or whatever it is. Uh, of not having people love you.

• 54:30Speaker 01

  Thing that everybody feels.

• 54:32Lewis Howes?

But it cripples us. So how are you able to have fun and be in the flow if you're in fear? It's just not possible. And I remember just feeling like I never want to feel like crippled.

• 54:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 54:42Lewis Howes?

Or like a prisoner. I always wanted to feel free. I think that's one of my things.

• 54:46Speaker 01

And it took practice from what you're saying. I mean.

• 54:48Lewis Howes?

  Years, man.

• 54:49Speaker 01

  Yeah, you've had to.

• 54:50Lewis Howes?

  Years.

• 54:51Speaker 01

In high school, reach out to those groups that maybe made you uncomfortable, you know, whether it was a dance class or.

• 54:56Lewis Howes?

All sorts of stuff. I mean, trying out for the lead in the, the musical was like the scariest thing for me ever.

• 55:01Speaker 01

That's fantastic. Drop into that story a little bit for a second.

• 55:04Lewis Howes?

That was terrifying, man. I just remember my senior year, I was like, okay, I'm gonna try out for this. Every year it was like a big deal at our school, the mu- the, the musical. It was like for a week, there would be a, a showing every night or whatever. And it was like. Big deal. The whole school go watch the whole community was like the thing in the spring. I did I did synchronized swimming. I forgot this. I did synchronized swimming like I did all of it, man. Synchronized. Synchronized swimming with the girls. Yes, I did all of it. Fantastic. And um, yeah, I just remember like, okay, I was like, okay, I'm gonna go out for the lead. I was like, if I'm gonna do the musical, I gotta go big and at least just try out for the lead.

• 55:42Lewis Howes?

It was so terrifying to sing in front of like these judges or whoever was like watching us on stage by myself. And to like sing this show tune or whatever. It was called Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, which is like this old musical. And it was so terrifying, man. And then to like read lines. I'd never read lines or acted in my life. So I was like, what the hell am I doing up here? And but I practiced a lot and I was so terrified, but I was like, you know what? Screw it. If I bombed, then I bombed. And I just was like, I'm gonna give my best and I didn't sound the best singing and I definitely was not good at my lines. But I went up there to the did the best that I could with the skills that I had in the moment that I had at a as a seventeen or eighteen year old.

• 56:28Lewis Howes?

And I got the second lead. So I didn't get the main lead, but I got like, there was seven brothers who were like the main people. And I was like the second oldest brother. So the oldest brother was the main lead and I was the next guy in line. So and I remember in the in the play, I had like one of the first lines of the play. So it was like so nerve wracking, opening night, there was like someone else had a line and then it was me. And I remember just being like so intimidated, but for like six weeks, we practiced after after sports, we'd practice all night long this play. And it was literally like the best experience I had probably all of high school, just like.

• 57:09Lewis Howes?

Being with these guys and these girls and like just we goofed off so much backstage. Just like little inside jokes everywhere. It's just so much fun, like running in transition to transition. That was like, man, I got a taste of like what people love going on Broadway. It was like, obviously it was much smaller and not professional in any way. But I got a taste of like why people love to do that, to perform and to act. It was so much fun, so much joy to be on stage with a group of people. I don't think I'd want to do it alone, but with like a group of people that you connect and overcome things together. It's like a team.

• 57:43Speaker 01

  That's it, like a team.

• 57:44Lewis Howes?

And you perform and you get a reaction and you inspire an audience.

• 57:49Speaker 01

  Right.

• 57:50Lewis Howes?

  That's what it's about, man.

• 57:51Speaker 01

That's it. That's it. I mean, same goes for business. I mean, you're, you're performing for whatever, your listeners, your customers, your clients.

• 57:59Lewis Howes?

  Potential clients, yeah.

• 58:00Speaker 01

Potentials, yeah. And, and what you do behind the scenes is so important, you know? And I'm even still understanding and realizing and growing and how important that is as, as not only trying to be a motivator and, you know, trying to, to continue to create progress and efficiency and, and growth in a company.

• 58:22Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 58:23Speaker 01

Um, so it is, it's a performance, but it's, it's also showing up every single day and playing the game that you want to play. And find joy in every single day. It's possible. I know it's possible.

• 58:36Lewis Howes?

  It is.

• 58:36Speaker 01

I mean, I, I still remember when you asked me again back in 2015 to come on and geez, oh man, it feels like a long time ago now.

• 58:44Lewis Howes?

  It does, man.

• 58:44Speaker 01

It's just so much has happened and grown since then and it's, it's powerful.

• 58:48Lewis Howes?

It's been two years? When did you come on? You remember?

• 58:50Speaker 01

Over two years. Yeah, it's, it's two years and I think two months now.

• 58:53Lewis Howes?

Really? You gave it May, huh?

• 58:55Speaker 01

  Yep, yep.

• 58:56Lewis Howes?

It seems like it's been four years.

• 58:58Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 58:58Lewis Howes?

We've done a lot in the last two years.

• 58:59Speaker 01

I've always known each other for a long time. Shoot, what, 2004? Holy moly.

• 59:04Lewis Howes?

  What's that? 13 years?

• 59:06Speaker 01

  Yeah. Fourteen, thirteen, fourteen.

• 59:09Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, it's crazy.

• 59:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:11Lewis Howes?

Well, all right, well, final thoughts, what's your, what's your final message? This, we're getting to the end of the hour.

• 59:18Speaker 01

I mean, I have, I have to say.

• 59:20Lewis Howes?

Hold your next questions for the next coffee conversation.

• 59:23Speaker 01

  Absolutely, absolutely.

• 59:24Lewis Howes?

  But let's, let's do a final Caesar's thought. Caesar's, what can we give you a, a final motivational thing? What's a CC?

• 59:32Speaker 01

I don't think we gotta get too cheeky right at the moment.

• 59:34Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, we can.

• 59:35Speaker 01

We'll, we'll come out, we'll come out with something.

• 59:37Lewis Howes?

  Caesar's, what are gonna be?

• 59:43Lewis Howes?

Thinking about it's another interesting, uh, Caesar's creation.

• 59:49Lewis Howes?

It's two Cs, it's a different alliteration though, it's Caesar's sermon. Caesar's sermon, baby, yes.

• 59:57Speaker 01

  Caesar's sermon, I don't know.

• 59:58Lewis Howes?

  Caesar's sermon, okay.

• 1:00:00Speaker 01

I'm, I'm down with coff- coffee with Caesar.

• 1:00:02Lewis Howes?

  Coffee with Caesar.

• 1:00:03Speaker 01

  Or something like that.

• 1:00:04Lewis Howes?

I like Caesar's sermon. We'll let the audience decide after this.

• 1:00:07Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 1:00:08Lewis Howes?

Caesar's sermon. Um, or just call it the Caesar salad. Shake it up, baby.

• 1:00:13Speaker 01

  The Caesar salad.

• 1:00:14Lewis Howes?

Shake it up. Shake it up, mix it up, you know?

• 1:00:17Speaker 01

Oh, man, like, with the last name, like Caesarato, growing up. Uh, nice Italian last name. I used to have to say, for pronunciation wise, cause it got botched when I was in high school.

• 1:00:28Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:29Speaker 01

Caserato with the catch on the fifteen yard line.

• 1:00:31Lewis Howes?

  With the catch.

• 1:00:32Speaker 01

I mean, my dad would go up to the booth. Caesarato. Julius Caesar, driving a car, Caesar Auto.

• 1:00:39Lewis Howes?

  That's funny.

• 1:00:40Speaker 01

  So, um.

• 1:00:41Lewis Howes?

  Caesar Auto.

• 1:00:43Speaker 01

  So, so.

• 1:00:43Lewis Howes?

  So, your final thought.

• 1:00:44Speaker 01

  Final thoughts.

• 1:00:45Lewis Howes?

On, uh, on the game of life in, in, in terms of business. Um, or life and business, either one. What's, what's Caesar's, uh?

• 1:00:54Speaker 01

Make your life a game. Who doesn't love playing a game?

• 1:00:58Lewis Howes?

  That's it.

• 1:00:58Speaker 01

  You know, having fun.

• 1:01:00Lewis Howes?

  That's it.

• 1:01:00Speaker 01

Creating joy. Make your life, um, the game that you'd like to play every single day.

• 1:01:06Lewis Howes?

That is a powerful way to end the conversation over coffee. With the Caesar sermon, finishing strong. Caesar salad, mix it up.

• 1:01:17Speaker 01

  That's it, I, I appreciate, uh.
