Acting is so embarrassing. I don't think people realize actually how utterly embarrassing it is. Because you also have to try things, and sometimes it doesn't land. But it's a part of the job, is like taking a risk or swinging, and you're like, okay, that didn't work, but let me like try it again. And you have to have trust. The director has to trust you to try things.

• 0:49Josh Horowitz?

  Yes.

• 0:49Speaker 01

Because sometimes you swing and it's a homerun.

• 0:52Speaker 03

Prepare your ears, humans. Happy, Sad, Confused begins now.

• 1:40Josh Horowitz?

And this was a fun one, because this was literally her last interview of a very, very long press tour, for a major moment for her. She is of course starring in Supergirl, as Supergirl. And as you'll be able to tell from Millie, she is, she's not that polished, kind of like canned response interviewee, which makes her a great interviewee. She is honest, and open, and funny, and serious about the work, but all

• 2:10Josh Horowitz?

Also has it very much in perspective. I really dug talking to her. This was her first time on the podcast and she's just getting started, obviously with House of the Dragon a couple of years back and now with Supergirl. She's already filming her role in the new Superman film, Man of Tomorrow, and a lot more to come. So I'm thrilled she did the podcast. I'm thrilled this is happening. I'm thrilled it was the last of her long press tour because she was in a great mood. I think you guys are gonna enjoy this one. So without any further ado, here is me and Milly Alcock. Enjoy.

• 2:38Josh Horowitz?

  Milly.

• 2:38Speaker 01

  Hi.

• 2:39Josh Horowitz?

  This is it.

• 2:40Speaker 01

  This is it.

• 2:41Josh Horowitz?

I have just learned this is Milly Alcock's, essentially, I think it's your final interview of your Supergirl press tour.

• 2:47Speaker 01

  It is.

• 2:47Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 2:48Speaker 01

  It is.

• 2:48Josh Horowitz?

I feel pressure. I feel an honor.

• 2:50Speaker 01

  Don't.

• 2:51Josh Horowitz?

  It's gonna be great.

• 2:52Speaker 01

  It's gonna be fab.

• 2:54Josh Horowitz?

This is similar. I had this experience once before with Paul Meskell on Gladiator 2.

• 2:59Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 2:59Josh Horowitz?

Press tour and he was, it was, it was more a therapy session. So feel free, they can't fire you now. It happened.

• 3:06Speaker 01

  They can't fire me now.

• 3:07Josh Horowitz?

  The movie's coming out.

• 3:08Speaker 01

The movie's gonna come out so soon.

• 3:11Josh Horowitz?

So soon. We're hours away. Congratulations.

• 3:13Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 3:14Josh Horowitz?

How, how are you feeling? Because it's, I know that's a loaded question. You've gotten that question for months, for years now.

• 3:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:21Josh Horowitz?

But maybe now you can answer it more accurately than ever because you really are at the end.

• 3:25Speaker 01

The finish line is right there.

• 3:26Josh Horowitz?

  Do you feel it?

• 3:28Speaker 01

Yeah. I mean, making a film is so difficult. It's honestly astonishing that we ever see anything on screen. And this has been such a long journey and I'm so excited for it to just be out in the world. I'm ready to give birth to this film.

• 3:49Josh Horowitz?

Just, just look at the movie area. Let's not talk about it.

• 3:51Speaker 01

Just stop talking. Just like, go see it, guys. Yeah, I'm, I'm ready. I'm really ready.

• 3:57Josh Horowitz?

  We're all ready.

• 3:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:58Josh Horowitz?

You, you kill it in this. You've heard that a lot. I'll say, I'll echo everybody. You were born apparently to play this role. You're amazing. Congrats. So at what point in this process did you realize that the real work of doing this was this part of it?

• 4:12Speaker 01

  Pretty quickly.

• 4:14Speaker 01

Yeah, it really is like the whole press side is so different because when you're an actor, you know, you go to drama school and they teach you how to act. They don't teach you how to do press and it's really is baptism by fire. Like in any other industry, you know, they would train you up. You'd have an orientation. You wouldn't be like straight away thrown into into all of these really big scary

• 4:37Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 4:38Speaker 01

scenarios. So it's been a massive learning experience and yeah, this is this is the real job part of it.

• 4:47Josh Horowitz?

Are you good at like, do you get the talking points? You're like trying to memorize. Oh, wait, what am I supposed to say?

• 4:50Speaker 01

I don't like being told what to do.

• 4:52Josh Horowitz?

Good. That makes for a better interview.

• 4:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:55Josh Horowitz?

I mean, have you ever talked about yourself for such a sustained period of time?

• 4:59Speaker 01

I'm so fucking sick of myself. Can I swear?

• 5:02Josh Horowitz?

  Yes.

• 5:03Speaker 01

Okay. I'm so sick of myself.

• 5:06Josh Horowitz?

Like people are always so much so interesting. I'm only so interesting to myself, let alone other people.

• 5:10Speaker 01

Oh my God, I'm so sick of my face and I really hate attention. So this is just like really bad.

• 5:17Josh Horowitz?

You made some bad career choices.

• 5:18Speaker 01

Really bad career choice. I didn't think I would make it, you know, like act as notoriously is an incredibly difficult competitive industry.

• 5:26Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 5:27Speaker 01

  I didn't think I would be successful.

• 5:29Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, you know, I mean, what are the odds?

• 5:31Speaker 01

What are the odds? I know that's very like anti what you're meant to say. You're meant to be like, believe in yourself. You could do it. And I'm like, girl, no.

• 5:38Josh Horowitz?

No, you're smart enough to know the odds and this is this is not going to happen. This never happens.

• 5:42Speaker 01

  I'm a realist. I'm not. Yeah.

• 5:44Josh Horowitz?

Let alone your, I mean officially your first movie. I get Superman is the first movie, I guess.

• 5:48Speaker 01

Yeah, but this is like my first movie, basically.

• 5:50Josh Horowitz?

  Which is again.

• 5:51Speaker 01

  Insane.

• 5:52Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, you should play the lottery because this is this doesn't happen.

• 5:55Speaker 01

I should. Maybe I'll do that today.

• 5:56Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, get a scratch off, do something. What's been the um, what's been the question we need to retire from the press story?

• 6:03Speaker 01

The suit, if one more person asks me about the fucking suit, I'm gonna lose my mind.

• 6:06Josh Horowitz?

  What was it?

• 6:06Speaker 01

They're like, what was it like to have the suit for the first time? And I get it. It's important, but it's just a very boring answer because there isn't like all things in life that happen. There wasn't a big moment.

• 6:20Josh Horowitz?

The spotlight doesn't come out on you.

• 6:22Speaker 01

Music doesn't start playing. I don't suddenly feel like I am Supergirl, you know?

• 6:28Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 6:29Speaker 01

Um, yeah, it's like, like all moments that you think are gonna be really big or in flat, in fact incredibly small.

• 6:35Josh Horowitz?

  Yes.

• 6:35Speaker 01

And it's always like the car ride back from the audition. That's the big moment or the phone call. You know what I mean?

• 6:40Josh Horowitz?

The little things in between. Yeah.

• 6:42Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah. Life happens in, in the smaller moments.

• 6:45Josh Horowitz?

So where have you been on, on the, on the tour? Have you traveled around the world, I assume?

• 6:49Speaker 01

Yes, I've been to LA, Mexico City, New York, Brazil, London, and back to New York. I haven't had a day off in three weeks. I'm dying.

• 7:01Josh Horowitz?

You're just rallying for thirty five minutes for me. I appreciate you.

• 7:04Speaker 01

  It's okay.

• 7:04Josh Horowitz?

You were, you were in Japan, but I think that was for a job.

• 7:06Speaker 01

  That was for a job.

• 7:07Josh Horowitz?

I'm jealous because Japan's my favorite. Outside of New York, it's my favorite place. As a foodie, because we're both foodies.

• 7:13Speaker 01

  We like food.

• 7:14Josh Horowitz?

  How was it?

• 7:15Speaker 01

Amazing. It's really hard to get a bad meal.

• 7:17Josh Horowitz?

  Right?

• 7:18Speaker 01

It's so hard to get a bad meal. Even like the conveni-

• 7:21Josh Horowitz?

  I know.

• 7:21Speaker 01

I got obsessed, I got obsessed with the sweet potatoes.

• 7:25Josh Horowitz?

  Right?

• 7:25Speaker 01

That you can just buy from like if you go to, yeah, or if you go to like a really good grocery store, they have them cooked. And they're so sweet and so good. That and onigiris were just like the easiest grab and go food. Like it's really hard to find.

• 7:39Josh Horowitz?

  They've really cracked the code.

• 7:40Speaker 01

They have. And the steak, I had some Kobe steak.

• 7:43Josh Horowitz?

  Come on.

• 7:45Speaker 01

  That was insane.

• 7:47Josh Horowitz?

Okay, we'll come to that a little later. Uh, because I do want to hear a little bit about that film because that sounds exciting too. But, um. So in the course of this, I would imagine some things keep you going. Like you know you, you're proud of the product. You know that like it's, it's turned out well and you're satisfied, hopefully. But also just seeing like fans, like at these events, seeing little girls probably dressed up as Supergirl.

• 8:05Speaker 01

It's not about you. It's actually not about me, you know, playing a part that is so beloved to a pre-existing audience. It's like anything that has pre-existing IP.

• 8:14Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 8:15Speaker 01

It's not about you in this really bizarre roundabout way. It's about them and the impact that hopefully this film has on them and for them to be seen.

• 8:24Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 8:24Speaker 01

Um, and that's always really important, I think, just to kind of remind, just remind yourself, it's not about you.

• 8:30Josh Horowitz?

Do you get like a little emotional at, at any point when you like see a little girl like?

• 8:34Speaker 01

  I did.

• 8:34Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 8:35Speaker 01

Yeah. Whenever people would ask me about my mom, I got really emotional. I was also just really tired. I was like, my mom.

• 8:42Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah. Moms do that.

• 8:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 8:45Josh Horowitz?

Was there, so for you growing up, was there like a super girl, kind of like heroic figure, either in fiction or in real life, that you kind of put on a pedestal that was meaningful to you?

• 8:59Speaker 01

I love Sharkboy and Lava Girl.

• 9:01Josh Horowitz?

  Say it again?

• 9:02Speaker 01

Sharkboy and Lava Girl. You know, Lava Girl?

• 9:04Josh Horowitz?

  Was not expecting that answer.

• 9:05Speaker 01

The Incredibles. No, but when I was a little girl, like, that's what I'm thinking of.

• 9:09Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, that works.

• 9:10Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 9:11Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 9:11Speaker 01

  Like, those kind of girls.

• 9:13Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 9:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:14Josh Horowitz?

That was, that was one of the Spy Kids, like, spinoffs, right?

• 9:16Speaker 01

  Yeah, Spy Kid Possible.

• 9:17Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 9:18Speaker 01

Um, like, those types of shows growing up.

• 9:22Josh Horowitz?

I mean, you were a Disney star, we should say.

• 9:25Speaker 01

  Guys.

• 9:26Josh Horowitz?

I saw Fallon kind of rat you out.

• 9:28Speaker 01

  He, I know.

• 9:30Josh Horowitz?

I don't know where he dug up that photo, because I was looking online.

• 9:32Speaker 01

  So old.

• 9:33Josh Horowitz?

  So you were...

• 9:34Speaker 01

  I was a B of Shav.

• 9:36Josh Horowitz?

But wait, there was another show too, that I saw, like, on the IMDB. Wait, let me go into my, my records. It said you were a presenter on a show as well.

• 9:43Speaker 01

  That was the show.

• 9:44Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, that was the show?

• 9:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:45Josh Horowitz?

So you were playing Milly. You were just Milly?

• 9:47Speaker 01

I was Milly the health nut. Bam. They each gave us, like, a thing, which upon reflection, I was like, okay, that's interesting, considering who you costed to be who.

• 9:56Josh Horowitz?

So was there, at that point, was there an aspiration, like, because you're not, you're in the Pantheon, you're in the Ryan Goslings, the Zendayas, you're part of the team, you're the Disney star team?

• 10:06Speaker 01

No, I'm not. So not. I was, like, on the shows that, in between the shows that people actually wanted to watch, telling them how to make, you know, a fruit salad.

• 10:15Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 10:16Speaker 01

And, like, a peanut butter celery boat.

• 10:18Josh Horowitz?

These are the important things to learn in life.

• 10:19Speaker 01

These are the important things. This is the impact.

• 10:22Josh Horowitz?

Have you retained that information, if we need to do the tutorial now?

• 10:25Speaker 01

I can barely remember what I said, like, an hour ago. Let alone what I said 10 years ago.

• 10:38Speaker 04

• 11:57Josh Horowitz?

Wow, this really has turned into a therapy session very quickly. But like, you do have, I mean, this is not unique among actors. I've talked to other actors like this that have this really strange-

• 12:04Speaker 01

Relationship with yourself. Yeah, you do.

• 12:07Josh Horowitz?

I mean, so what, like, how do we figure this out? Like, you obviously love to perform. You love to be in front of a camera. You love to inhabit other characters. But then, you also don't like-

• 12:17Speaker 01

I don't want to be seen. It's a weird relationship where it's like, my dream would be like, skin suit. Hear me out. I act in a different, like, physical body and face, and I can take it off.

• 12:28Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 12:29Speaker 01

I just don't, yeah, that would be like, my, my dream, I think.

• 12:32Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 12:33Speaker 01

To do it. But that's the kind of cost of it. And some people- Idolize that and some people really want that and some people feel like it's not a problem and it's not a problem. So there's also this weird thing of like, you can't feel bad about it because you've put yourself there and you're successful. And there's people that, you know, the world is fucked so badly, so irreversibly badly. So you can't complain.

• 13:01Josh Horowitz?

Right. It's it sounds, again, we all have to keep this in context. Like, yes.

• 13:04Speaker 01

  But people don't like context.

• 13:06Josh Horowitz?

People don't like, we're not in an age of context.

• 13:08Speaker 01

  Context at all.

• 13:10Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, we sound like uppity whatever, like, oh, you're complaining, you're like on a movie poster. But this, again, the in-between stuff can, you know, wear on you. It's it's a lot.

• 13:21Speaker 01

I think as consumers, we should all try and be a bit kinder.

• 13:24Josh Horowitz?

  This is.

• 13:25Speaker 01

To people. Yeah. And just remember that everyone's human.

• 13:30Josh Horowitz?

Everyone's struggling through their own things.

• 13:31Speaker 01

Just a person, you know, at the end of the day.

• 13:34Josh Horowitz?

How's the how's the social media thing? Like, are you were you on social media back in House of the Dragon days? Have you been on consistently? And has that been something to navigate?

• 13:42Speaker 01

Yeah, it's it's a it's a working relationship and I'm trying to get off it a lot more. I'm trying to get people to manage it for me. But then there is a part of you that like wants to read all the bad comments because it fulfills your own self-belief about yourself.

• 13:59Josh Horowitz?

  See, you're right.

• 14:00Speaker 01

You're like, see, they know. They know.

• 14:01Josh Horowitz?

  They see the real me.

• 14:02Speaker 01

They see the real me. I am I'm a terrible person, you know. But I think that's just what humans do.

• 14:09Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, I always say.

• 14:10Speaker 01

It'd be stranger if I was the opposite. And people don't talk about that.

• 14:13Josh Horowitz?

No, I talk about that on this podcast. I always say I don't trust the people that that think they're like, perfect. And because I don't, no one does.

• 14:24Speaker 01

  Perfect is boring.

• 14:25Josh Horowitz?

  Perfect is boring.

• 14:26Speaker 01

  Really boring.

• 14:27Josh Horowitz?

Uh, that segues well into this character. She's not perfect.

• 14:30Speaker 01

  No.

• 14:31Josh Horowitz?

She's messy in the best possible way.

• 14:32Speaker 01

  She's human.

• 14:33Josh Horowitz?

  Imagine that.

• 14:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 14:35Josh Horowitz?

Um, when this came around, had you ever done like a comic book audition? Like, have you ever been up for anything like this?

• 14:41Speaker 01

  No.

• 14:42Josh Horowitz?

So, long process, I take it?

• 14:44Speaker 01

  No.

• 14:45Josh Horowitz?

  No?

• 14:46Speaker 01

  It was two auditions.

• 14:47Josh Horowitz?

  Seriously?

• 14:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 14:48Josh Horowitz?

  You're too good.

• 14:51Speaker 01

James Gunn just sent me like a WhatsApp text with the deadline article. When I got the part, he didn't even call me. Which I was like, this is a calling situation.

• 15:03Josh Horowitz?

Yes, this elevates to that level. This is FaceTime, this is something.

• 15:07Speaker 01

This is something. I just awoke to like a message.

• 15:11Josh Horowitz?

  Not like FAI.

• 15:12Speaker 01

It was just like a link to the deadline article. And I was like, okay. And then I called him.

• 15:17Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 15:17Speaker 01

  And yeah.

• 15:19Josh Horowitz?

So those, so two sessions with James, two camera tests, like screen tests?

• 15:23Speaker 01

One self tape. I was in Australia, just gone home for the first time in very, very long.

• 15:28Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 15:29Speaker 01

And then they were like, come do a screen test in Atlanta. And I was like, what's a screen test? And I discovered, I've never done a screen test before. They like shoot you as if you're doing a day on set so that you get in hair and makeup. You wear clothes that they pick out. And it was me and another girl and you're like in the same makeup truck, like sussing each other out. And I'm like, oh, she's like me, but like prettier and more polished.

• 15:51Josh Horowitz?

So another actor that was trying to get the role?

• 15:52Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah. But they do that with all of these things. So like.

• 15:55Josh Horowitz?

  I don't get that.

• 15:55Speaker 01

Sometimes they do like seven different people, but it was just me and one other girl.

• 16:00Josh Horowitz?

That seems to be like a psychological test because there's.

• 16:02Speaker 01

  That seems mean.

• 16:03Josh Horowitz?

That, there's enough room on the sound stages to find someone, it's another trailer.

• 16:07Speaker 01

Yeah. I know the trailers are separate, but like you'll do hair and makeup. This is one hair and makeup trailer.

• 16:12Josh Horowitz?

What's the etiquette with the other actor?

• 16:14Speaker 01

You say hi. You say, hi, how are you? You nervous? I'm not nervous. Bye. And then they kind of put you at either ends.

• 16:22Josh Horowitz?

Did you know the actor? Have you interacted since?

• 16:24Speaker 01

  I didn't know. I didn't, I didn't know her, but she's very sweet.

• 16:28Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 16:28Speaker 01

  She's very lovely.

• 16:29Josh Horowitz?

I'm sure. So did you have, did you feel like you had a beat on Cara right from the start? Like you, do you have like a way in? Did you feel in that moment like? Yeah, I, I get this.

• 16:37Speaker 01

I think so. Yeah, I think so. I remember listening to This Is The Day by The The.

• 16:45Josh Horowitz?

  It's hard to say.

• 16:46Speaker 01

  It's hard to say.

• 16:47Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 16:47Speaker 01

On the way back. And I was kind of like, fuck.

• 16:53Speaker 01

I got that. What have I done?

• 16:58Josh Horowitz?

So if you hadn't gotten that WhatsApp from James, would this have been one that stuck in your craw? Like, oh, this really felt like this was the one.

• 17:04Speaker 01

Yeah, probably. I think that you always have a feeling. You always kind of know if it's you or not, you know?

• 17:10Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 17:12Speaker 01

Yeah, I think you can kind of gauge a vibe.

• 17:14Josh Horowitz?

So the first person that directed you as Tara, Supergirl, was James?

• 17:18Speaker 01

  Yeah, it was James.

• 17:19Josh Horowitz?

Right, on the set of Superman, obviously.

• 17:23Josh Horowitz?

Did he have strong thoughts on like directing you? Or was, were you kind of like self-guided?

• 17:29Speaker 01

  I can't really remember. I think it was a bit self-guided.

• 17:31Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 17:32Speaker 01

I think it was a bit like, you're drunk, be more drunk, stumble. It was kind of like that.

• 17:37Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 17:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:38Josh Horowitz?

Pretend the dog is licking you.

• 17:39Speaker 01

Pretend the dog is licking you. And there was like a four foot 11 actor, there are these actors that play animals.

• 17:46Josh Horowitz?

  Of course.

• 17:47Speaker 01

And she was pretending to be a dog and barking at me.

• 17:50Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, who has the worst job in that situation? Is it you having to pretend a 411 person is a dog? Or the 411 person that thinks they're a dog?

• 17:58Josh Horowitz?

  Tougher job.

• 17:59Speaker 01

Depends on the ego, I think, of either one of them.

• 18:02Josh Horowitz?

I guess that teaches you, this kind of pulls the curtain back.

• 18:05Speaker 01

Acting is so embarrassing. I don't think people realize actually how utterly embarrassing

• 18:09Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 18:09Speaker 01

it is, because you also have to try things and sometimes it doesn't land. But it's a part of the job is like taking a risk or swinging and you're like, okay, that didn't work, but let me like try it again.

• 18:19Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 18:19Speaker 01

And you have to have trust. The director has to trust you to try things.

• 18:24Josh Horowitz?

  Yes.

• 18:25Speaker 01

Because sometimes you swing and it's a home run.

• 18:27Josh Horowitz?

Are you, are you pretty good at giving that trust away? Does it take a lot to earn your trust on a set? I mean.

• 18:34Speaker 01

I don't know. I think that I'm the type of actor that if I don't believe it, I just like can't do it.

• 18:40Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 18:40Speaker 01

Which is probably just, I'm stubborn and I'm a bit proud. It could be red as that way. But yeah, I'm someone that like I really have to, I can't fake it. I can't like

• 18:49Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 18:50Speaker 01

  fake it.

• 18:51Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 18:53Speaker 01

  Ever.

• 18:53Josh Horowitz?

On that, so on those first couple, is that just a day or two on set on Superman?

• 18:56Speaker 01

Just one day, it's like an afternoon.

• 18:58Josh Horowitz?

  Crazy.

• 18:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:59Josh Horowitz?

So working with David, the contrast between those characters. I mean, I don't know if we're ever going to see Superman drunk or hungover. It'd be fun to see.

• 19:09Speaker 01

I would love to see that.

• 19:10Josh Horowitz?

  Right?

• 19:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 19:10Josh Horowitz?

  Do we think Superman drinks?

• 19:14Speaker 01

No. I feel like he'd be polite enough to hold an alcoholic beverage at a point of celebration.

• 19:21Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 19:22Speaker 01

And then he would probably just put it down. I don't think he would know what to do with his hands if he was holding a beer.

• 19:26Josh Horowitz?

What is, I'm trying to remember, what does Cara drink in the film? What's her drink of choice?

• 19:31Speaker 01

Anything. That sequence is actually a lot longer. And I was just kind of grabbing shit and just drinking it.

• 19:37Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 19:38Speaker 01

But they they cut it because I think they were like, she's too drunk.

• 19:42Josh Horowitz?

  I mean, it's good to be a

• 19:46Josh Horowitz?

You don't go method. You're not one of those actors.

• 19:47Speaker 01

No, I don't believe in method acting.

• 19:49Josh Horowitz?

  Right?

• 19:49Speaker 01

  No.

• 19:50Josh Horowitz?

Have you worked with method actors?

• 19:51Speaker 01

  I don't think so.

• 19:52Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 19:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 19:53Josh Horowitz?

But it feels like, again, the BS detector in your brain would have trouble kind of buying into that.

• 19:59Speaker 01

Just feels a bit insecure personally.

• 20:01Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 20:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:02Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. No, I had that actually with Olivia Cook, actually, last week here. She was, she's worked with some method actors and it feels, she was saying, we were saying, you can sometimes feel it's a little bit more about them. It's, it's, it's, it's very, can be selfish.

• 20:14Speaker 01

Yes, but it's also that thing of like, okay, I'm at work. I'm not going to let my own personal kind of

• 20:19Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 20:19Speaker 01

opinion towards what they're doing affect the relationship. I have to just accept what is happening. I can't change the way that they're going to approach their process.

• 20:26Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 20:26Speaker 01

  You know?

• 20:27Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 20:28Speaker 01

But then you bitch about it when you get home.

• 20:31Speaker 01

Like, because we all do with co work.

• 20:34Josh Horowitz?

No matter what job, of course.

• 20:37Josh Horowitz?

So you're number one on the call sheet on this. You're super girl.

• 20:39Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 20:40Josh Horowitz?

That's a big thing in a, in a giant movie.

• 20:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:43Josh Horowitz?

With a lot of people putting a lot of, you know, money into it, et cetera, time and effort. I mean, what did that feel like kind of having to be that person? Obviously Craig is directing the set, but you also have to set the tempo

• 20:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:56Josh Horowitz?

as number one. Was that something you were conscious of?

• 20:58Speaker 01

  Not really.

• 20:59Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 21:00Speaker 01

Um, I think for me, I really love to be a collaborator on set. I love to become really close with the crew and really lean on them from like the A Ds to the standby props to the cameraman. Like, I really want to feel like this is a team and we're all doing it and we're all

• 21:19Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 21:20Speaker 01

pushing this, you know, we're all moving a mountain every day together.

• 21:24Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 21:24Speaker 01

So I think that that set a nice precedent and I'm also just like a very open person. I'll just be like, I don't know what I'm like.

• 21:34Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 21:34Speaker 01

What's kind of, you know, I didn't. I just wanted to feel like a person and that this was a team.

• 21:41Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 21:41Speaker 01

And I'm not the most important person in the room. Um, always show up on time, always be there for other people. You know what I mean?

• 21:48Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. I think it's the healthier way to.

• 21:50Speaker 01

  Do your job.

• 21:50Josh Horowitz?

I mean, I've talked to like directors in a similar vein because I think there are two like ways to do it. It's like to pretend you have all the answers or to be open and like invite collaborators in and say like, I don't know.

• 21:59Speaker 01

I think that's where the best work is made. I think having too many yes men is incredibly dangerous in any sort of creative field. And you can kind of see when certain creatives have gotten to a certain standard and it's only yes men and you're like, it's not help, it's, it's a hindrance. It's not, it's not helping you.

• 22:17Josh Horowitz?

No, it's why some of, honestly, some of the great filmmakers, they just sort of plateau and go down and you're like, no one's, no one's telling you.

• 22:25Speaker 01

And, and, and also restriction creates creativity. If you're given access to absolutely everything, you will impact no one and you won't make any creative choices because

• 22:36Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 22:36Speaker 01

you can do anything. But when you're restricted,

• 22:38Josh Horowitz?

  Yep.

• 22:39Speaker 01

you will fundamentally become more creative.

• 22:41Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 22:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:42Josh Horowitz?

Okay. So give me the moment you felt coolest on set and dumbest on set.

• 22:50Speaker 01

  Coolest on set?

• 22:54Speaker 01

The fight sequences, the boss fight specifically was really cool. That was like my first. No, that wasn't my first fight sequence while we were shooting, but I had learned that one pretty front to back. Most of that is me. Pretty, all of it is pretty much me.

• 23:08Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 23:09Speaker 01

Which felt very badass. And then,

• 23:14Speaker 01

I was saying this on Fallon, whenever you have to like go into flying from standing.

• 23:18Josh Horowitz?

  That's amazing. Yeah.

• 23:19Speaker 01

It just never feels not stupid. Or when you're kind of just like dangling in the air and everyone's like, they're like, Melly, can you hold for ten? We've got to move. And you're just like, kind of like.

• 23:31Josh Horowitz?

It's like the dead puppet. It's like.

• 23:32Speaker 01

Yeah, it's so painful. It's so uncomfortable.

• 23:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:36Josh Horowitz?

Um, so people might not know this, in the middle of this press tour, James has said this, I mean, we know that Man of Tomorrow is shooting, and you're a part of that.

• 23:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:44Josh Horowitz?

What's it been like to be shooting your role in the film in the middle of all of this? Is it hard to kind of code switch?

• 23:49Speaker 01

  It really is.

• 23:50Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 23:51Speaker 01

It's hard to code switch. Um, and it's a different environment than the environment that we

• 23:57Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 23:58Speaker 01

that we had on, on Super World. It's a different, it's a different story. Um, but all of the cast I've gotten to work with have been super open.

• 24:06Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 24:07Speaker 01

And really lovely, like Nicholas Holt, David.

• 24:10Josh Horowitz?

  He's a gem.

• 24:10Speaker 01

He, love him. Um, Alan, who plays Gary, the robot, was also there.

• 24:16Josh Horowitz?

  Funny man.

• 24:17Speaker 01

He's so funny. Yes, and Lars, we've had like a few people, yeah.

• 24:23Josh Horowitz?

Brainiac himself. Um, I mean, James has said on the record that you have a, you have a big role in, in the film. Were you surprised, excited when you read the script and saw

• 24:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 24:32Josh Horowitz?

how much you got to do?

• 24:33Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah. I'm excited. I'm excited to keep, to, to keep doing it.

• 24:37Josh Horowitz?

How, how are Clark and Kara doing? Is the relationship what we've seen before? Has it progressed?

• 24:43Speaker 01

I'm not gonna tell you things.

• 24:46Josh Horowitz?

You're like, we're having fun, Josh, but not that much fun.

• 24:48Speaker 01

  I'm too tired to...

• 24:49Josh Horowitz?

No, you're tired, so tired, you will say things.

• 24:51Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 24:53Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 24:53Speaker 01

  So...

• 24:54Josh Horowitz?

  I thought I had you.

• 24:55Speaker 01

  Nope.

• 24:57Josh Horowitz?

Has he given you, has James given you a sense of like, even longer term plans of like, no, beyond Man of Tomorrow, you have no idea?

• 25:03Speaker 01

  No.

• 25:04Josh Horowitz?

Okay. But you're game. You had fun.

• 25:07Speaker 01

  I have to be.

• 25:08Josh Horowitz?

You're like, contractually, Josh, the next 10 years of my life, basically.

• 25:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:26Speaker 04

• 26:53Josh Horowitz?

All right, so let's go back a little bit.

• 26:54Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 26:54Josh Horowitz?

Okay, this is not a fake accent. You were born in Australia, correct?

• 26:57Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 26:57Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 26:58Speaker 01

But I'm sounding more British and I fucking hate it.

• 27:00Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, no.

• 27:01Speaker 01

  I know.

• 27:02Josh Horowitz?

Do you think so? You've clocked that?

• 27:03Speaker 01

  I've clocked it.

• 27:04Josh Horowitz?

Your friends say that? They say like, what happened to you?

• 27:06Speaker 01

I don't know why. I think it's because the job is to kind of mimic others that you kind of subconsciously.

• 27:12Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 27:13Speaker 01

Just start mimicking those around you.

• 27:15Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 27:17Josh Horowitz?

When you were growing up, were you watching all of our stupid American TV and films? Yeah. What were you watching?

• 27:23Speaker 01

  I was really into Annie.

• 27:25Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 27:26Speaker 01

  The original Annie.

• 27:27Josh Horowitz?

  Classic.

• 27:27Speaker 01

  Really into Breakfast with Tiffany's.

• 27:29Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 27:30Speaker 01

What else was I really into? Ren and Stimpy.

• 27:33Josh Horowitz?

  Great.

• 27:34Speaker 01

  Which was kind of great.

• 27:35Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 27:35Speaker 01

  CatDog.

• 27:36Josh Horowitz?

Did you have any posters on the wall?

• 27:38Speaker 01

No, my mother wouldn't allow posters on the wall because they were ugly and they'd peel the paint.

• 27:43Josh Horowitz?

You don't sound resentful about it at all.

• 27:45Speaker 01

No, I've completely overcome that grudge, yeah.

• 27:49Josh Horowitz?

Posters on the wall now, like exercising to your demons? No movie poster at home in London?

• 27:54Speaker 01

No movie poster. No, I've been given, I got given storyboards from the film that I did in Japan that was signed by Takashi Muke that I have hung up. But I haven't been home long enough to kind of like fully get in to the decor.

• 28:09Josh Horowitz?

So what, do the last few years kind of feel like a little bit of a blur? Like coming out of House of the Dragon into this, like have you had time to kind of assess? It feels like between, you have, yeah? And where are you at in terms of like, because you, you know, some people like, like David was very methodical, like it seems like he took Superman, he kind of took a minute before he did another thing. You've kind of been like working a lot, like was that a conscious thing? Like, I don't want to be defined by one thing. It's important to me to show my range of actor.

• 28:39Speaker 01

Righty, um, a little bit, yeah. I really wanted

• 28:46Speaker 01

to make really good work and to make things on a smaller scale. What I really loved about my experience with shooting Supergirl, even though it was this massive ten-pulp film, is that Craig really fostered such an environment of intimacy and collaboration that it literally felt like we were making an independent film. But then we just were like, oh, I fly.

• 29:08Josh Horowitz?

  Plus flying.

• 29:09Speaker 01

Plus flying, you know, and I really love that. I really love the community aspect of it and the intimacy that comes with storytelling.

• 29:19Speaker 01

And I kind of just wanted to, to get better as an actor and to diversify as well as an actor.

• 29:26Josh Horowitz?

Did some theater a couple of years ago?

• 29:27Speaker 01

Theater, I really want to do more theater.

• 29:29Josh Horowitz?

The Crucible is one of my favorite plays of all time.

• 29:30Speaker 01

  It's pretty great.

• 29:31Josh Horowitz?

  And that's a great character.

• 29:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 29:33Josh Horowitz?

  What a shit stirrer.

• 29:35Speaker 01

But she's not though. John Proctor's the villain.

• 29:39Josh Horowitz?

  That play said it too.

• 29:40Speaker 01

I know, but I was saying it day one, day dot. This man is like assaulted this woman, this young girl.

• 29:46Josh Horowitz?

  Both things can be true.

• 29:47Speaker 01

Both things can be true, but you have, like, she's a sixteen-year-old girl. She doesn't know, she's not, she doesn't know any better.

• 29:52Josh Horowitz?

I feel like I'm losing, I'm gonna be, I'm gonna come across horrible in this argument.

• 29:55Speaker 01

  You are.

• 29:56Josh Horowitz?

  Backtracking, you're right.

• 29:57Speaker 01

  You have lost.

• 29:57Josh Horowitz?

  No.

• 29:58Speaker 01

  But it's true.

• 29:59Josh Horowitz?

  No, you're, I hear you.

• 30:00Speaker 01

He should have known better. He's the adult.

• 30:02Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 30:03Speaker 01

He's the adult at the end of the day.

• 30:04Josh Horowitz?

Was it a, a great experience doing that in London?

• 30:06Speaker 01

  It was so much fun.

• 30:07Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 30:08Speaker 01

It was so much fun. There was something really. Cathartic about it and the kind of coming in every day. It felt like working an actual job, which I kind of really, really miss.

• 30:21Josh Horowitz?

  Yes.

• 30:22Speaker 01

Knowing where I'm gonna be and what I'm doing, but then the audience changes every night and that by proxy changes you and your, your performance.

• 30:31Josh Horowitz?

And hopefully that feeling of like, hopefully relief at the end of the night. You've gone through the whole thing.

• 30:35Speaker 01

  The adrenaline's fab.

• 30:36Josh Horowitz?

Right? So growing up, were, who were the actors that you were putting up on a pedestal? Were they like Australian actors? Was it like the Cate Blanchett's, the sixteen Hemsworths? Like, what were you? Who were the ones that you were kind of like saying?

• 30:50Speaker 01

Really into Michelle Williams. She's so good. Um, love Gina Rowland.

• 30:57Josh Horowitz?

  Yep.

• 30:58Speaker 01

Cate Blanchett. But yeah, my experience with acting was kind of weird. It's more selfish. I was never like obsessed with actors or with film.

• 31:10Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 31:11Speaker 01

That's not why I got into it. I got into it to kind of help me comprehend the experience of being a person.

• 31:18Josh Horowitz?

  Mm hmm.

• 31:19Speaker 01

And deal with that and understand that.

• 31:21Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 31:21Speaker 01

  Um.

• 31:22Josh Horowitz?

But you're saying you went into it with noble reasons of trying to understand humanity as opposed to just being famous and wealthy?

• 31:27Speaker 01

  I know, yeah.

• 31:28Josh Horowitz?

  Ugh.

• 31:28Speaker 01

  Just trying to understand myself.

• 31:31Josh Horowitz?

  Get out.

• 31:32Speaker 01

To make it big, yeah, to.

• 31:34Josh Horowitz?

To get a grown Instagram following? You didn't want to do that?

• 31:36Speaker 01

  No.

• 31:39Josh Horowitz?

Has it worked? Do you feel like you're understanding yourself and humanity a little bit more bit by bit?

• 31:44Speaker 01

No. Bit by bit. All the people that I play, I think I kind of need to play them in this weird way. And they kind of become a part of you.

• 31:50Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 31:51Speaker 01

Um. Yeah, it's a great place to like put your emotional dysregulation.

• 31:58Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, it's cheaper than therapy.

• 32:00Speaker 01

It's cheaper than, well, you make money.

• 32:03Josh Horowitz?

  They pay you for this?

• 32:04Speaker 01

  They pay you.

• 32:05Josh Horowitz?

You really, you cracked the code, as I said.

• 32:06Speaker 01

  The code.

• 32:07Josh Horowitz?

Um, we should mention House of the Dragon, which is where most of us Americans at least, or a lot of the world outside of Australia probably first took note of your work. Um, was that a big learning curve? Like stepping onto that set?

• 32:19Speaker 01

Yeah, it was insane. It was my first like international job. I was working with. Such incredible actors on a project of such monumental monumental scale.

• 32:30Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 32:31Speaker 01

Um, it was incredibly daunting. I was living alone for the first time in my life. You know, I was twenty one. I could barely like tie my shoes. So trying to figure out how to feed myself correctly and how to like use a washing machine and like also deal with all of these feelings without having a support network and it was COVID and yeah, the weather is different. So it's like, how many? It took me so long to figure out layering. It sounds so stupid, but in London, I feel like I've been there for five years. I've just figured out the appropriate things to wear depending on the weather.

• 33:04Josh Horowitz?

  Congrats.

• 33:05Speaker 01

So thanks. So yeah, it was a massive learning experience.

• 33:08Josh Horowitz?

Being surrounded by like, you know, Ethan's and Patty and Matt Smith. We talked about Matt before. Um, especially like that relationship.

• 33:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 33:19Josh Horowitz?

  Fascinating.

• 33:19Speaker 01

  Fascinating.

• 33:20Josh Horowitz?

  To say the least.

• 33:21Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 33:22Josh Horowitz?

Never take a niece to a brothel. We should, that's just like a rule.

• 33:27Speaker 01

Sounds like the start of a really bad joke.

• 33:30Josh Horowitz?

  A really good one. Yeah.

• 33:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 33:32Josh Horowitz?

But like playing that that relationship with Matt, what are your memories of kind of like, I don't know, cracking that? That very unique relationship.

• 33:40Speaker 01

Yeah. I mean, Matt just made me feel so comfortable.

• 33:45Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 33:46Speaker 01

In this way. We had this really lovely relationship. It felt like we were friends. We would all kind of go out after work and get a beer and hang out and it felt very humanizing. I think that obviously he was aware of the power imbalance.

• 34:04Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 34:04Speaker 01

And he always tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible. Um, and it was, yeah, it was, I only have positive things to say about about it.

• 34:13Josh Horowitz?

Damn, I was looking for dirt. When when you see, um,

• 34:16Speaker 01

  No dirt.

• 34:16Josh Horowitz?

No, no dirt. Obviously we love Matt around here. When you see Emma on the show, I don't know if you follow the show or have watched much of it. Is that odd for you? Is like, do you see your character?

• 34:26Speaker 01

  I haven't been watching it.

• 34:27Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 34:28Speaker 01

I know it's so bad, but um. I watched the first season and I think that Emma has done such a phenomenal job. I think that they're an impeccable actor.

• 34:38Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 34:38Speaker 01

And I'm really excited to see what they do next.

• 34:40Josh Horowitz?

  Totally.

• 34:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:41Josh Horowitz?

Okay, so let's tease a little bit of what's to come. We teased this because you did spend some time in Japan with an amazing filmmaker, some very notable actors, some notable musicians turned actors, Charlie XCX. That's a horror film?

• 34:54Speaker 01

  It's a horror film.

• 34:55Josh Horowitz?

  What can we expect from?

• 34:56Speaker 01

We can expect blood and guts and horror and scary things. Yeah, it was really fun. Yeah, it was me, Charlie XCX, Hayley Benton Gates, and then we had a fabulous Japanese cast as well.

• 35:11Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 35:11Speaker 01

Um, yeah, it was so much fun. It was just such a different environment. Um, because Takashi Miike has had the same crew for 30 years, so just I've never worked on a set that that relationship is so fostered and so established that like he doesn't even have to say anything. He's also a man of very few words, but he's got like cheeky eyes.

• 35:33Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 35:33Speaker 01

You look at his eyes and you're like, you're naughty. You've got some stories.

• 35:39Josh Horowitz?

And sometimes the people that say a lot are the ones that have the least to say.

• 35:43Speaker 01

He doesn't need to say anything. He's got to look at you.

• 35:45Josh Horowitz?

And what about, I've never met Charlie. I'm fascinated. She's like a big film buff, like she like.

• 35:50Speaker 01

  Yeah, she's cool.

• 35:52Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 35:52Speaker 01

She's like one of those people that is like genuinely cool, like very grounded, very down to earth, is there for the work, would come in every day with like a bunch of ideas and a bunch of notes. Like she was really there

• 36:05Josh Horowitz?

  Nice.

• 36:05Speaker 01

to, to do the work. Um, and you can just tell that she's someone who is such a professional when it comes to collaboration.

• 36:14Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 36:15Speaker 01

And like how to navigate that space. I was like, oh, wow. You, yeah, you know how to like move about an environment like that because that's a, I'm trying to learn how to do that.

• 36:25Josh Horowitz?

You're a work in progress. We all are. We all are. It's okay. And you probably got VIP seating now at any concerts. I don't know if you're like a music festival person.

• 36:32Speaker 01

  I hope so.

• 36:33Josh Horowitz?

Do you do the music festivals?

• 36:34Speaker 01

I haven't been able to because I've been working in the summer.

• 36:37Josh Horowitz?

But there's a want to. It's just not.

• 36:38Speaker 01

  There's a want. It just hasn't happened.

• 36:39Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 36:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:41Josh Horowitz?

Are you still working with, speaking of Australian great actors, Toni Collette? Is that on the docket potentially?

• 36:45Speaker 01

I don't know. It's kind of like, it's astonishing that anything ever gets made. It takes. The fact that we see anything ever on screen is like, I don't think people realize how insane it is.

• 36:57Josh Horowitz?

I know. Well, I always, yeah, every film is a miracle. Every good film is like 10 times a miracle.

• 37:01Speaker 01

  Exactly, yeah.

• 37:03Josh Horowitz?

Um, but I mean, do you have, not only of working with actors from Australia, but like, I mean, some filmmakers, I don't know if you grew up like putting like, like Baz Luhrmann or George Miller or Jennifer Kent in recent years, like, are these people on your radar, people that wouldn't be meaningful to work with?

• 37:18Speaker 01

Yeah, definitely. I mean, at the end of the day, I want to have a really long and diverse career. I want to work with as many independent thinkers as possible within the marketplace. I want people who um, have a real perspective of the story that they're trying to tell. Cause to me, that's precision makes something really interesting. As soon as you try to appeal to everyone, you don't appeal to anyone.

• 37:42Josh Horowitz?

  Thousand percent.

• 37:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 37:43Josh Horowitz?

So is any actor specifically or filmmaker specifically on the list? Like in the next five, 10 years, Josh, if I'm talking to you and I haven't worked with them, I'm a failure. I need to make this happen.

• 37:52Speaker 01

You put me on the spot. Now I've like never seen.

• 37:56Josh Horowitz?

Yes, is what we're saying. I've never seen a film or an actor.

• 37:58Speaker 01

Never seen a film, don't even know what an act is.

• 38:05Speaker 01

Kind of like to work with, is it Christoph Boogly? I don't know how to say his last name. He did Sick of Myself. He did the drama. Sick of Myself was one of my favorite films.

• 38:13Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 38:13Speaker 01

It's amazing. It's about like a woman with Munchausen.

• 38:17Josh Horowitz?

  Oh.

• 38:17Speaker 01

So not Munchausen by proxy, so it's to herself.

• 38:19Josh Horowitz?

  Oh no.

• 38:20Speaker 01

So she like makes herself sick for attention. It's phenomenal.

• 38:24Josh Horowitz?

From, from what our limited conversation that makes sense that you might appreciate.

• 38:28Speaker 01

  People do terrible things.

• 38:30Josh Horowitz?

  To themselves.

• 38:31Speaker 01

No, just like, but there's just like such an honesty. There's such an exposure to, to the uncomfortable reality of human emotions and the uncomfortable kind of. Way that we want to be perceived. I think films about perception are really interesting.

• 38:47Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 38:47Speaker 01

The substance is really interesting. You know what I mean?

• 38:50Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 38:50Speaker 01

  Um.

• 38:51Josh Horowitz?

You need to do, I mean, going back to early on our conversation, if you really don't want to like see yourself, Andy Serkis step aside, you need to do performance capture.

• 38:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 38:59Josh Horowitz?

You need to like transform into like a goat or a box or something.

• 39:03Speaker 01

  Too silly.

• 39:03Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, yeah, you would feel.

• 39:04Speaker 01

I feel too silly. I do. I want to do more theater.

• 39:08Josh Horowitz?

Come here, New York. Do it here.

• 39:09Speaker 01

I would love to. Just got to find the right.

• 39:12Josh Horowitz?

  Musical play?

• 39:13Speaker 01

  No.

• 39:14Josh Horowitz?

  No, not an aspiration?

• 39:15Speaker 01

  No.

• 39:16Josh Horowitz?

  Do you sing at all?

• 39:17Speaker 01

  No. Can barely act.

• 39:20Josh Horowitz?

  Please.

• 39:20Speaker 01

  I'm a one trick pony.

• 39:21Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 39:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:22Josh Horowitz?

Okay, we end with this. Happy second to his profoundly random questions, Milly. And this is the last few minutes of your press tour, so really make it count.

• 39:30Speaker 01

My heart rate just went up. I'm so excited.

• 39:35Josh Horowitz?

  Um, dogs or cats?

• 39:37Speaker 01

  Cats.

• 39:37Josh Horowitz?

  I've heard this.

• 39:38Speaker 01

  I know.

• 39:39Josh Horowitz?

  You've betrayed poor crypto.

• 39:40Speaker 01

I don't fucking like people who are like your dog or a cat person. I'm like, guys, there's enough division in the world.

• 39:45Josh Horowitz?

  Wow.

• 39:45Speaker 01

Can we just agree that people are allowed to like what they like?

• 39:48Josh Horowitz?

I didn't say that you have to. You're screaming at me now.

• 39:50Speaker 01

No, but this is the thing, because I've been asked this a lot.

• 39:52Josh Horowitz?

  Have you?

• 39:53Speaker 01

Yeah. They're like, but how could you not? I meant to, and I'm like, why do you care what people like?

• 40:00Josh Horowitz?

I'll have you know, I asked this prior to this whole press tour. It's not Supergirl related.

• 40:03Speaker 01

  I'm not special.

• 40:04Josh Horowitz?

  You're not.

• 40:04Speaker 01

  It's nice to be reminded.

• 40:05Josh Horowitz?

  That's not true.

• 40:06Speaker 01

Thank you. I'm not. None of us are.

• 40:07Josh Horowitz?

Oh, my God. What do you collect?

• 40:12Speaker 01

  Memories.

• 40:13Josh Horowitz?

  I would hope so.

• 40:14Speaker 01

What do I collect? This is so lame, but like vintage bags. I have so many passes.

• 40:20Josh Horowitz?

  Great.

• 40:20Speaker 01

  It's my, it's my obsession.

• 40:22Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 40:23Speaker 01

Such a wanky obsession. Such a like a new money thing. I've, I hate it, but I love it.

• 40:29Josh Horowitz?

Do you have a favorite video game of all time?

• 40:32Speaker 01

Animal Crossing, because it's so cute.

• 40:36Josh Horowitz?

  Just not the dogs, obviously.

• 40:38Speaker 01

No, I'm not. No, that's my point is that there's no opinion. You're allowed to like dogs. I don't like people who do that. Who do the, you don't like dogs that don't like you.

• 40:50Josh Horowitz?

  I didn't say that.

• 40:52Josh Horowitz?

I feel like you're projecting a lot of baggage from this press tour on me now.

• 40:55Speaker 01

  Maybe, I'm sorry.

• 40:56Josh Horowitz?

No, it's okay. We were having a good time the first 34 minutes and then it collapsed.

• 41:00Speaker 01

  I know, it's my fault.

• 41:01Josh Horowitz?

No, it's not your fault. The Dakota Johnson memorial question, she asked me this. I ask everybody, would you rather have a mouthful of bees or one bee in your butt?

• 41:10Speaker 01

  One bee in my butt.

• 41:11Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. What's the wallpaper on your phone?

• 41:14Speaker 01

It's a photo booth of me and my partner that we took in Paris.

• 41:18Josh Horowitz?

Very nice. Who's the last actor you were mistaken for?

• 41:24Josh Horowitz?

  Ever happen?

• 41:25Speaker 01

Someone, people don't even know who I am, so I'm not really getting mistaken for anybody else. One lady on the carpet. No.

• 41:35Josh Horowitz?

  No?

• 41:36Speaker 01

People don't even know who I am.

• 41:37Josh Horowitz?

  That's not true.

• 41:38Speaker 01

  It is true.

• 41:39Josh Horowitz?

Like a main tag that says like, I'm Supergirl.

• 41:41Speaker 01

  Absolutely not.

• 41:44Josh Horowitz?

What's the worst note a director has ever given you?

• 41:46Speaker 01

  Louder.

• 41:49Speaker 01

  That's it.

• 41:50Josh Horowitz?

  You don't like that one?

• 41:55Speaker 01

I don't like it. There's nowhere to go with that.

• 41:58Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 41:58Speaker 01

  But I get it. I like really ambiguous ones. I don't like, I don't like a result-based direction.

• 42:05Josh Horowitz?

  Like?

• 42:05Speaker 01

Like so like angry, happy, louder, quieter.

• 42:09Josh Horowitz?

Right. You don't want that. You want more of a obtuse kind of.

• 42:12Speaker 01

You want, you want an action. You want something that's active.

• 42:14Josh Horowitz?

  Yes.

• 42:15Speaker 01

So resentment, fear, like you want like something that.

• 42:19Josh Horowitz?

Let me do the job. I'll figure out how to get there.

• 42:21Speaker 01

How to get there, because I can't fake it.

• 42:23Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 42:24Speaker 01

Because I'm not really an actor. So if someone says louder.

• 42:27Josh Horowitz?

Right. I'm not a robot. You don't tune me up.

• 42:29Speaker 01

I get a bit pissy because I'm annoying.

• 42:33Josh Horowitz?

No, you're not. Finally, in the spirit of happy second fuse, an actor who always makes you happy. See them on screen. Oh, I'm in a better mood. Yay.

• 42:42Speaker 01

  Probably Ryan Gosling.

• 42:43Josh Horowitz?

  Yes.

• 42:46Speaker 01

He's just got this thing. Yeah.

• 42:50Josh Horowitz?

What's your, but wait, I feel like I heard you say, is Blue Valentine one of your films?

• 42:54Speaker 01

Blue Valentine is one of my films.

• 42:55Josh Horowitz?

  I mean, that's.

• 42:56Speaker 01

But Lost in the Real Girl was Craig's film.

• 42:58Josh Horowitz?

  That's right.

• 42:59Speaker 01

He's so good in that. I love that movie.

• 43:01Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 43:02Speaker 01

That's a really good, like, reflection of humanity, I think, in that film. Like, how it's very surprising.

• 43:09Josh Horowitz?

He's the best version of, like, a movie star using his powers for gags, right?

• 43:13Speaker 01

He's who you kind of want to be.

• 43:14Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 43:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 43:15Josh Horowitz?

Um, movie that makes you sad?

• 43:21Speaker 01

I watched Our Planet and just cried.

• 43:24Josh Horowitz?

  Hmm.

• 43:26Speaker 01

The David had a really climate change documentary.

• 43:29Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, that's real. That's real.

• 43:30Speaker 01

I was just like, I'm so fucked.

• 43:33Speaker 01

Like, can I be 20 years old while this is happening?

• 43:35Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, you made it too real, Milly.

• 43:37Speaker 01

  Yeah, so.

• 43:38Josh Horowitz?

  But it's true.

• 43:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 43:39Josh Horowitz?

Um, and finally, as a foodie, what's a food that makes you confused? You don't get it?

• 43:45Speaker 01

  That's such a good question.

• 43:49Speaker 01

Well, I'm going to have to think about this, like a, like a.

• 43:52Josh Horowitz?

  Can be anything.

• 43:52Speaker 01

  Ingredient?

• 43:53Josh Horowitz?

Could be anything. For instance, some people, speaking of, like, you know, Japan sushi, like, urchins come up a lot. People like, ugh, just.

• 43:59Speaker 01

  I know. I don't.

• 44:02Speaker 01

Mine's like, have you ever had, like, the little worms in Spanish food? Do you know what I'm talking about?

• 44:08Josh Horowitz?

  I, I.

• 44:09Speaker 01

The tiny, tiny fish. They're like tiny little squiggly fish.

• 44:14Speaker 01

You guys are looking at me like I'm crazy.

• 44:16Josh Horowitz?

No, no, no. No, I believe you.

• 44:17Speaker 01

I had on, like, potatoes bravas. I don't know what it is, but they're like tiny little, like, tiny little squiggly fish. No, I have a better one. You know, when you get, like, scales on fish, but they move?

• 44:28Josh Horowitz?

  Oh.

• 44:28Speaker 01

You know, because they're still alive or something?

• 44:31Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 44:31Speaker 01

That confuses me, but I will eat it. But it just confuses me about how they do it. Or like how octopuses are alive when you cook them, that sounds.

• 44:39Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, rule of thumb. I want my food to be actually dead before I eat it.

• 44:43Speaker 01

It just seems mean that that's how we got to do it.

• 44:45Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, it's mean enough that we're killing them, let alone that we have to.

• 44:47Speaker 01

Kill them alive? I wouldn't like that.

• 44:52Josh Horowitz?

  That's how you're gonna go.

• 44:53Speaker 01

God, let's touch wood on that.

• 44:56Josh Horowitz?

We're ending on our planet, the end of humanity, and, and squiggly worms and.

• 45:03Josh Horowitz?

What an end to a press tour, Milly.

• 45:05Speaker 01

  I know.

• 45:06Josh Horowitz?

  Hey, you did it.

• 45:07Speaker 01

  I did it.

• 45:07Josh Horowitz?

You did the movie. More importantly, you did the press tour.

• 45:11Speaker 01

See, that's the most important bit.

• 45:12Josh Horowitz?

Most important. Five stars. Go back into your cave, hibernate.

• 45:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 45:17Josh Horowitz?

And I'll see you on the next one.

• 45:18Speaker 01

I'll see you probably sooner than I would want to.

• 45:21Josh Horowitz?

  I'm sorry.

• 45:22Speaker 01

It's not your job. You're not the bad guy.

• 45:25Josh Horowitz?

Thank you for saying that, because I thought I was for a minute here.

• 45:27Speaker 01

It's not, hey, let's, let's live and let, let's forgive and forget.

• 45:31Josh Horowitz?

  There it is.

• 45:32Speaker 01

I was gonna say live and let die, but it's, that's a lyric.

• 45:35Josh Horowitz?

I don't, I can't afford the licensing. Uh, it was great to meet you. Thank you for this.

• 45:41Speaker 00

And so ends another edition of Happy, Sad, Confused. Remember to review, rate, and subscribe to this show on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm a big podcast person. I'm Daisy Ridley, and I definitely wasn't.

• 45:53Speaker 01

  Should do this by Josh.

• 45:59Speaker 04
