• 0:29Speaker 01

The first sheets I ever had were Star Wars.

• 0:31Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 0:32Speaker 01

And I had them in my trailer when I made the movie.

• 0:36Josh Horowitz?

  Same sheets?

• 0:36Speaker 01

Why is that weird? Don't make that weird.

• 0:38Josh Horowitz?

I didn't know. That was involuntary. I can't control my face sometimes.

• 0:40Speaker 01

But why did you think it was weird, even for a second?

• 0:42Josh Horowitz?

Wait, are they the same childhood sheets? Or you went on eBay?

• 0:44Speaker 01

So I still have the childhood sheets. My mom kept them. I didn't keep them.

• 0:49Josh Horowitz?

  I didn't say anything.

• 0:50Speaker 01

When I told my mom I was doing the movie, she was like, "I still have the sheets."

• 0:56Speaker 01

So I had them for inspiration.

• 0:57Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 0:59Speaker 01

Now that you've made it weird.

• 1:00Josh Horowitz?

No, I didn't make it weird. It's a sweet story.

• 1:02Speaker 01

  No, no, no. That's fine.

• 1:05Speaker 03

Prepare your ears, humans. Happy, Sad, Confused begins.

• 1:12Josh Horowitz?

Hey, guys, it's Josh. Welcome to another edition of Happy, Sad, Confused. Today on the podcast, hey, girl, it's Ryan Gosling. That's right, Ryan Gosling, on the podcast for the very first time, talking all things Project Hail Mary and so much more. Thank you, guys, as always, for checking out the podcast on YouTube, on Spotify, listening, wherever you are. I appreciate you, guys. If you're new to the podcast, if you were enticed with the promise of Ryan Gosling, welcome aboard. Check out our archive, 700-plus episodes, 12 years of Happy, Sad, Confused. We keep on going. And you know why we keep on going? For new, exciting experiences like this. First-time guest, Ryan Gosling. We are really diving into Project Hail Mary

• 1:54Josh Horowitz?

in a big way on the podcast because I love this movie. I got a chance to moderate their very first Comic-Con panel last July in San Diego. And that was a special one, seeing just 20 minutes of footage. If you don't know, this is based on Andy Weir's remarkable bestselling book, also a bestselling audiobook. It is a sci-fi story, an adventure story, a comedy, a thriller. It's a lot of things. Most importantly, it is a huge cinematic experience that you really should bring out your friends and family and go see this in a theater because it demands it. So we are diving in in a big way on the podcast. We have not only Ryan today, coming up very

• 2:35Josh Horowitz?

soon on the podcast, we have screenwriter Drew Goddard. Very excited about that one. Drew has an amazing, amazing resume, diving into all things, um, yeah, his entire career. Just look it up, you'll see. We also have Phil Ward and Chris Miller, the directors of Project Hail Mary. Uh, these guys are great. That's coming up next week. Um, you know them, you love them from the Jump Street movies, from the Spider-Verse movies. That's a fun one, too. But the main event today, it's Mr. Gosling. So a little context here, a little history here, history lesson for you, Josh Horowitz, Ryan Gosling, uh, heads, or, or maybe you're new to our interactions, which is totally fine. I don't expect you to know our oeuvre together. But suffice it to say, I've been talking to Ryan for a

• 3:18Josh Horowitz?

long, long time, many, many years, my days at MTV, and, um, we always, we had some very memorable conversations over the years. Um, primarily, you know, I referenced Hey Girl. Hey Girl was the famous kind of meme way back when. I believe it was around the crazy stupid love time when I interviewed Ryan about that one. And no, I did not originate the Hey Girl meme, but my interview with him, where I was asked him to recreate some and respond to some, became a huge thing. So that's just one tiny part of the Ryan Gosling, Josh Horowitz story, but, but there's so much more because he has been great to me over the years, and we've had some really fun conversations. My interview with him and Emily Blunt for Fall Guy is an all-timer. Um, talking to him for Barbie, I don't know,

• 4:02Josh Horowitz?

I've talked to him for everything. And I, I, look, I don't need to sell you on Ryan Gosling being a charming gentleman. You, you know, you know. And, uh, here's the thing, though. Ryan doesn't do podcasts. Look it up. He just doesn't. He doesn't do long-form podcasts. Uh, this is a very, very exciting rare treat. He taped one over, one other, rather, podcast.

• 4:27Josh Horowitz?

Um, right after mine today. Uh, I believe it's going up right before mine. So ah, not quite the exclusive first podcast interview with Ryan Gosling, but I know in my heart, I know in my mind, it was recorded first. So kind of the exclusive first Ryan Gosling podcast. Um, but yeah, I was really thrilled and honored that he chose to come on the pod. Um, and said some really nice things, uh, to me. And yeah, he's a gem. He's a gem. What can you say? Ryan Gosling. He's a gem. So I don't, I want to get right to it. Before we get to the conversation, just a quick reminder, as always, hit up our Patreon. If you like what I do, we put up our episode, episodes early. We give you, um, merch, autograph

• 5:07Josh Horowitz?

merch, uh, exclusive access to live events. We've got a May 5th event in New York City with Stanley Tucci coming up, a live taping of Happy Sad Confused. I'm going to be in Chicago for C2E2. I'm going to be in Miami for the Miami Film Festival. I'll try to remember to put all that information in the show notes. Lots of exciting live events coming up. And like I said, a lot more Project Hail Mary. So Patreon.com slash Happy Sad Confused. That's where you can find all the info. Support us over there. Helps us make more over here. Okay. You ready? Strap on in. This is a special day, guys. For me, for you, maybe for Ryan Gosling. I don't know. Here is Ryan Gosling's kind of sorta podcast debut. Uh, enjoy. Ryan.

• 5:52Josh Horowitz?

Josh. We're doing this. We're doing it. My personal. And doing it, and doing it well? Well, we'll see. We'll judge at the end. My personal hail Mary has been to get you on this podcast for years. You're doing it. We're, we made it happen. That was a weird high five. Was it? It turned into a shake. We're going to hug it out at the end too, to really make it super awkward. I take responsibility for it. No, no, no. Here's the thing. Okay. In my copious research, you know, I'm the world's biggest Ryan Gosling aficionado. Not a- Copious research. Not a podcast guy. You have not done the podcast thing virtually at all. Why have you been denying the world? We want to know more about you. Only you. Just, I've been waiting for this. You ready? No. There're gonna be tears. I haven't done it.

• 6:38Josh Horowitz?

If you were to start a podcast, what would your expertise be? What would be the Ryan Gosling podcast?

• 6:42Speaker 01

I don't know. I was just thinking about that earlier, actually. It seems like a fun thing to do.

• 6:46Josh Horowitz?

  No complaints, I enjoy it.

• 6:48Speaker 01

  Yeah?

• 6:48Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 6:49Speaker 01

Yeah, because you're just doing what you would do anyway.

• 6:51Josh Horowitz?

This is the kind of stuff I would talk about anyway.

• 6:52Speaker 01

Just talking to people about stuff.

• 6:54Josh Horowitz?

You could talk about like Rocky films, like 80's and still own films. You could do...

• 7:00Speaker 01

Right, how many episodes we get out of that?

• 7:02Josh Horowitz?

I do feel like the sequence in the film of you describing, was it Rocky IV to Rocky?

• 7:07Speaker 01

Yeah, I made him watch all the Rockies and the Creeds.

• 7:11Josh Horowitz?

That feels like something that, was that in the script? Or is that something that you just do?

• 7:14Speaker 01

It was not in the script, no. But the film is MGM and I was like, well...

• 7:18Josh Horowitz?

  Waiting for you.

• 7:18Speaker 01

We do have access to them, right? Well, then we have to watch all of them.

• 7:22Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 7:23Speaker 01

  His name is Rocky.

• 7:24Josh Horowitz?

  It's perfect.

• 7:25Speaker 01

He has to see all of them.

• 7:28Josh Horowitz?

Okay, so let's talk, Project Hail Mary, by the way.

• 7:30Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 7:31Josh Horowitz?

Is the film. Official congratulations. I've given you congratulations off camera, but that is meaningless to the world.

• 7:37Speaker 01

Does it matter unless it's on camera?

• 7:39Josh Horowitz?

Nothing. This is such a great movie.

• 7:42Speaker 01

It felt meaningful, but it wasn't.

• 7:45Josh Horowitz?

No, no. You know, I'm obsessed with this movie, I've seen it twice already. And the response couldn't be better. Is this, are you exhaling? Are you, I mean, this has been a passion project for five, six years.

• 7:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:57Josh Horowitz?

Are you ready to relax and say, oh, it worked?

• 8:04Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 8:05Josh Horowitz?

Doesn't that have to be like a company yes?

• 8:07Speaker 01

Well, I've been holding on for so long, right? It was such a crazy process because people are describing it as the best book they've ever read. And you would have to get the best of the best in order to pull it off. And then on top of it, just the love for it and the love for Rocky. And then how do you realize this alien that everyone has kind of conjured in their own mind? And love so much, how do we, how do we do this? This was just that hard.

• 8:35Josh Horowitz?

Is it the Rocky part of it? I mean, so much of it relies on that relationship and buying that and emotionally connecting with that.

• 8:43Speaker 01

It sounds cheesy, but the film has mirrored, like the making of this film has mirrored the story itself in so many ways. You know, it feels like a hail Mary just to try and make it. And everything has just been basically a leap of faith.

• 8:57Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 8:57Speaker 01

Because getting Rocky right and making the choice to do it practically and not do it CGI was just such...

• 9:06Speaker 01

A commitment because Rocky, a lot of times, didn't work. It was a bit like Jaws, shark, you know, it was like a lot of work. My point in saying that is that so is this story about this. Everything is hard in the story and so when we finally, when it did work, it was magic. There were times I felt like I have an alien best friend. We're just hanging out in a spaceship, talking. You know, James is so, Ortiz, the puppeteer, is so deeply connected to Rocky that he can go in any different direction and we can improvise and we start to have a real relationship. And so what we're capturing is actually, you know, a real relationship developing,

• 9:51Speaker 01

which you never could have gotten any other way. So I didn't know going into it that it would work out, but it felt like we were doing the things we needed to do in order to like have the magic happen if it was going to happen. So I do feel a sigh of relief because enough of the book fans, I think, have seen it and love it. And so that feels good. It feels like we did justice to the book and to Rocky.

• 10:18Josh Horowitz?

Well, as you well know, it is about assembling the team and then hoping that it all comes together with the best of intentions, as you know. Nine times out of 10 films, they're doubles, if that. And when it all clicks, it's like you have to be grateful like that something magical happened along the way and it happened here.

• 12:13Josh Horowitz?

Talk to me a little bit about, okay, so, science films. This is gonna immediately go into science film Mount Rushmore. This goes with, let's put Oppenheimer up there, Martian, obviously. I'm gonna put Real Genius on there.

• 12:25Speaker 01

  Huge inspiration.

• 12:26Josh Horowitz?

I heard you mention this. We're, we love Real Genius, right?

• 12:29Speaker 01

  We love Real Genius.

• 12:30Josh Horowitz?

That is one of the movies, most quotable movies. It's ingrained in my brain.

• 12:34Speaker 01

Also, just like his, that t-shirts were his love language.

• 12:37Josh Horowitz?

  Yes, that's right.

• 12:39Speaker 01

How cool he made science, just, you know.

• 12:41Josh Horowitz?

Chris here is one of the 10 finest minds in the country.

• 12:43Speaker 01

  Val Kilmer, we're talking about.

• 12:44Josh Horowitz?

Someday, I hope to be two of them. There's so many gems. It's still there. It's still there. You grew up, but you were a little young for Real Genius. I was doing the math. You were, I'm a little older than you. You were five when Real Genius came out. You caught on to it?

• 12:57Speaker 01

I mean, I caught it on...

• 12:59Josh Horowitz?

An HBO free weekend or something like that?

• 13:01Speaker 01

You know, like a blockbuster or something.

• 13:03Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. Was Val generally an inspiration?

• 13:06Speaker 01

Totally. I mean, just what a, what an inspiration and what, what a loss, you know? I had an opportunity to...

• 13:15Speaker 01

Watch him work once and I just think he's, you know, he was truly one of the greats.

• 13:20Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. So you've like vacillated, I feel like in your career where it's like you can play stoic hero amazing. You can also play out of his depth idiot really well.

• 13:32Speaker 01

  Even better.

• 13:32Josh Horowitz?

  I didn't say that.

• 13:34Speaker 01

  That you really nail.

• 13:36Josh Horowitz?

No, but like, are they both, like weirdly you're really good.

• 13:40Speaker 01

So good at being out of your depth.

• 13:42Josh Horowitz?

Are both equally rewarding in their own unique ways to kind of play the fish out of water, the guy that's just in over his head and also play like the classic drive, you know, hero that will be the man with no name, the man that doesn't say much.

• 13:56Speaker 01

Well, it was, it's been helpful to have played a lot of those characters because now I think I can, um, you're sort of hemmed in in a way with, with those, right? There's just so many things you can't try, so many things you can't do if you're like a creative person and you can think of like all the different ways a scene could go or all the things that you're, the people you're working with that you want to incorporate.

• 14:22Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 14:23Speaker 01

You would just kind of end up like thousand yards staring through the process and you let all these gifts just fall away.

• 14:30Josh Horowitz?

Right. The only ways, so many ways to smolder quietly on the screen.

• 14:34Speaker 01

Yeah. And you just let it all go. And that's the worst is when you get onto a film set and you have cameras and you have people, you know, that you are inspired by or you want to capture it.

• 14:45Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 14:46Speaker 01

And you're limited when you're doing those kinds of roles because you just, you can't, you know, but so, you know, having done films like that, getting to do this, I think a big part of the inspiration for me to do this was like, okay, this one, I'm not going to let anything go by, you know? We're going to capture it all. And I knew that I needed Chris and Phil to do that because that's the kind of filmmakers.

• 15:08Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 15:08Speaker 01

They are, you know? I mean, it used to be like when I made independent films, I was doing a lot of dramas, something funny would happen and then they, everyone would laugh and then they would cut and they'd be like, okay, that was funny, but let's, let's get serious, you know?

• 15:22Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 15:22Speaker 01

As though funny things don't happen.

• 15:24Josh Horowitz?

  In real, in drama.

• 15:26Speaker 01

In life and as though that funny, the funny helps with the sad and it helps, you know, that's how you can rope a dope, right? You can sort of like.

• 15:34Josh Horowitz?

So there's a funnier cut of the believer is what you're saying. There's like a real.

• 15:37Speaker 01

Well, that, that director was, he thought it was hilarious. I mean, that was what was also so interesting, but.

• 15:46Josh Horowitz?

Well, it's also time. Like, you don't have time on those independent, the smaller films.

• 15:48Speaker 01

But you do. I mean, you can like let, you can keep rolling. You don't have to cut. So I really, you know, producing this film was a big part of it for me was like also capturing the nature of the book, which is a lot of humor in the book and then getting filmmakers that not only allow for it, but like, you know, try and create it and look for it.

• 16:14Josh Horowitz?

Who's running lines with you as Rocky? Is Eva doing that, or is it like who?

• 16:18Speaker 01

  What, at home?

• 16:19Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 16:22Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, my family helped me so much, you know, so my, my girls were so helpful. One time they came to set and they were doing Rocky for me on them. They got on the mic and I was acting with them.

• 16:35Speaker 01

So many ideas, just so many, the glasses, you know, like my daughter, I was trying on looks and she was like, "You do look smarter in glasses."

• 16:43Josh Horowitz?

  These, these are for show.

• 16:44Speaker 01

  And I was like,

• 16:47Speaker 01

  "It's a great point, I'll wear it."

• 16:49Josh Horowitz?

But again, being open to ideas and whether it's from a family member or a crew member, you'll take what you, I mean, anything you can bounce off of, I would imagine, makes it better, right? Like, it's...

• 16:59Speaker 01

  Yeah, I always feel like

• 17:03Speaker 01

every day is a bit like an escape room. You know, I've never actually done an escape room, so maybe I shouldn't use this analogy, but from what I understand, it feels like that because you can make all the plans you want.

• 17:16Speaker 01

But every day is different, right? You show up and it's, it's like you're supposed to shoot a scene outside and, but it's raining, right?

• 17:24Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 17:25Speaker 01

So do you build the tenting and then, but then you have to loop it because you're going to hear the rain on the thing and then the whole thing's going to be looped, but it's a big dialogue scene and you're like, "Should this whole thing be looped? Should we be chasing this old idea?"

• 17:36Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 17:36Speaker 01

Or should we just... Let's do it in the car, we'll shoot it from outside, we won't hear anything they're saying, and we'll just see them talking, and maybe that's the thing. Like, if you're working with the right people that are willing to throw out the idea for a better idea. And it's always those scenes where people see a film and then they say, "I love that scene in the car where you don't hear what they're talking about, and you're just watching them talk."

• 17:56Josh Horowitz?

It's Sandra singing in this film.

• 17:58Speaker 01

It's Sandra singing in the film. Which turns out to be one of the best scenes in the film. Every time we screened it, people were like, "That's their favorite scene."

• 18:06Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 18:06Speaker 01

  Not supposed to be there.

• 18:07Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 18:08Speaker 01

But you have to have the right people that are willing to do it, you know? Sandra is down to sing, out of nowhere, she picks sign of the times, the directors create space for it, we spend a whole day shooting that when we weren't supposed to. And, you know, I don't know, those things are, um... They're gifts, they're all around. You just have to be working with people that recognize them as that. And I think filmmaking can be so regimented, where you think, "Well, that's not part of the plan."

• 18:36Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 18:37Speaker 01

And there's this whole idea of, like, shoot, like, there's... We romanticize, I think, the idea of, like, sticking to the vision.

• 18:45Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, make your day, get the shots that were assigned.

• 18:48Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 18:48Josh Horowitz?

  As opposed to...

• 18:49Speaker 01

Being open to, like, the things that are happening around you and finding a way to feather them in to the story.

• 18:58Josh Horowitz?

How are you at crying on demand in a film? You have to cry a bit in this film.

• 19:01Speaker 01

  I did, yeah.

• 19:02Josh Horowitz?

What's your secret? Are you going to, like, real places? Are you thinking of specific things? Are you poking it in at your eye? What's your, what's the Ryan Gosling technique?

• 19:13Speaker 01

I'm not above any, any of that. Whatever it takes to get the job done.

• 19:20Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 19:21Speaker 01

On this film, it, like, was emotional, you know? Because by, like, I spent so many days alone on camera, because we shot in order.

• 19:31Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 19:31Speaker 01

That by the time Rocky shows up, I genuinely need a friend. I need a scene partner.

• 19:37Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 19:39Speaker 01

They're so brilliantly bringing him to life that there are times where I feel like we are friends. And when I see him sick or in trouble, or suddenly like he's, you know, I won't give too much away, but you see these moments where he's in distress.

• 19:57Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 19:58Speaker 01

It's like, it's kind of not hard at that point, you know, because you've really been on the journey and the book is incredible. So I know the story and I feel, the story makes me feel just as it makes everyone who reads it feel so much.

• 20:14Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, the sound of distress of Rocky, it reminded me like as a kid, and I know E.T. comes up, but like, I can still hear that sound of E.T.

• 20:21Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 20:22Josh Horowitz?

  When E.T. is dying.

• 20:23Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 20:24Josh Horowitz?

  Or sad or upset.

• 20:25Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 20:26Josh Horowitz?

I'm gonna start crying now, Ryan, that's it, right?

• 20:28Speaker 01

He's all like pale, you'll never unsee it.

• 20:32Josh Horowitz?

  I know.

• 20:32Speaker 01

These are kind of core memories.

• 20:34Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 20:36Speaker 01

That's what we were hoping to create here was like a kind of these kind, that kind of a film.

• 20:42Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 20:42Speaker 01

You know, Back to the Future.

• 20:46Josh Horowitz?

  No, the perennials, that's.

• 20:47Speaker 01

Those things that are core memory films that I don't, I don't think my kids have very many of those.

• 20:55Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. All right, so we have the luxury of a little time, some random, we could go all over the place for a little bit. What's the deep cut that someone references to you that brings a smile to your face? If you see somebody on the street and they quote something, they say something.

• 21:10Speaker 01

  Of my work?

• 21:11Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, of your work.

• 21:13Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 21:16Speaker 01

I don't know. What is the deep cut thing that someone mentions?

• 21:20Josh Horowitz?

  It's Young Hercules, is that?

• 21:21Speaker 01

Love that. Love hearing Young Hercules.

• 21:26Josh Horowitz?

Which episode should I start with? If I, I've never watched it, I apologize. Do you recommend me going to the beginning, like start with the pilot and then go?

• 21:34Speaker 01

I don't know that you'd need to necessarily go on the whole journey. What is a good... There's one episode that I did with Vern Troyer. What great Vern Troyer. Yeah. I got to know him on that and that was really... He was, yeah, he was such an interesting... Yeah, he was a character, right. Really interesting guy. Had he already done Austin Powers? No, he was going to do Austin Powers and he was trying to explain to me what he was going to do. Yeah. And I didn't totally get it, obviously, until I saw it. Right. But yeah, he played, he did a lot of suit work and he played a dinosaur.

• 22:13Speaker 01

And, yeah, there were times where I was like, in the episode I have to squeeze him and then this like goo comes out and catches stuff on fire. Sure. And it was so strange because he and I would be talking about life and all of that. And then someone would say, "Okay, it's time to shoot." And then he'd like have to put on the helmet and be like, "All right, let's go." Like, let's just... Showbiz. Squeeze the goo out of me. Come on. There's a metaphor for Hollywood.

• 22:40Speaker 01

Does somebody have to squeeze the goo out of you on set? We're all getting the goo squeezed at some point.

• 22:47Speaker 01

But anyway, he just was such a lovely, like fascinating dude.

• 24:17Josh Horowitz?

Has Eva tried to get you on Instagram? She is really, she's killing it. Her social media game is...

• 24:22Speaker 01

That's so nice of you to say.

• 24:24Josh Horowitz?

She's amazing. What a supporter. Lovely.

• 24:26Speaker 01

She's MVP of this whole film.

• 24:28Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 24:29Speaker 01

  Helping me so much.

• 24:30Josh Horowitz?

So ever come close to... Are you working out there? You're watching. You're on Instagram. You're on TikTok. You're seeing what's out there.

• 24:37Speaker 01

Well, she'll show me what she's doing.

• 24:39Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 24:40Speaker 01

You know, but I think, um, yeah, she's so, she has such a great, I think, perspective on it.

• 24:46Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 24:46Speaker 01

So I leave it to her.

• 24:48Josh Horowitz?

Fair enough. Are you a TV watcher? Do you watch a lot of TV? You're obviously a film fan. Do you consume a lot of TV nowadays?

• 24:56Speaker 01

Yeah, I grew up, like, TV was my best friend.

• 24:59Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 25:00Speaker 01

All the channels were my friends. I knew everything.

• 25:03Josh Horowitz?

You knew the lineups backwards and forward. Yeah, I remember when the TV Guide would come out, I would like do the circling, schedule out my life according to...

• 25:09Speaker 01

Right. I didn't have a lot of friends growing up. I had TV.

• 25:15Josh Horowitz?

  I heard, I...

• 25:16Speaker 01

I used to stay home. I used to pretend to be sick so I could stay home and watch Regis and Kelly. I love Regis and Kelly. Of course. And I love Days of Our Lives. I can't support you there, but okay. Really? I just never got into it. Maybe it was great. I just didn't. Days of Our Lives. That was the one? Well, just soap opera actors in general. Yeah. They, they, they do not get the love they deserve. Oh, no, don't get me wrong. The amount they have to. Memorize the night before. I know. Like 10 pages of dialogue, they get one take. Yeah. And it's impossible scenarios. Like when Marlena.

• 25:52Speaker 01

Deidra Hall, right? We know. Deidra Hall. Yeah. Gets possessed. This is right around when X-Files was a big deal. Right? Suddenly everything got supernatural. Sure. She was possessed by the devil. Yeah. Right? Yeah. So she, Deidra Hall is just suddenly after playing, you know. Just a normal. Normal person. That's the. Then she's got to have the, and then it's like, or it's like somebody's dead and now they're back. Or they're, and then they're a different actor and they come out of the shop. You know, it's like. That was Bo, by the way, when Bo and Hope, he came out as a new Bo. Of course. Yeah, I know.

• 26:25Speaker 01

I just say it was an incredible acting. Yeah. Class. Yeah. You know, there, anyway, so. They possessed. What's that? I'm saying like, I'm giving you a direction. What's amazing is I remember that thinking like, God.

• 26:39Speaker 01

Deidra Hall's a great actress because she's having to act possessed right now. That just seems like a lot to ask of her. And then it, and I like, it's kind of also when I stopped watching the show, not because of that, but I think I just had like to live my life. Yeah. And just recently I, it was on TV and she's possessed again.

• 26:59Speaker 01

Has she been possessed for 30 years? No, I think it's just like somehow. Yeah. My, my life keeps passing. Like keeps crossing the path with, with when Deidra Hall is possessed. It's like the monolith in 2001. It happens every like 30 years.

• 27:17Josh Horowitz?

Shudey Gott was said that you were a big Doctor Who fan, that he discovered that you were, is that was Doctor Who?

• 27:22Speaker 01

  I'm not as deep.

• 27:23Josh Horowitz?

I'm not gonna give you trivia, don't worry.

• 27:24Speaker 01

Okay, thank you. I couldn't answer that. I just, I remember like thinking it was super cool and weird growing up.

• 27:33Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 27:33Speaker 01

I didn't, it wasn't on the schedule with it. I didn't, I don't, I can't answer any trivia. But I do think Shudey as Doctor Who is like all time casting idea.

• 27:43Josh Horowitz?

You also just worked with another Doctor Who. I was gonna say, did you, were you responsible for Matt Smith? Who was one of my favorite human beings. I'm obsessed with Matt.

• 27:51Speaker 01

Huge Matt Smith fan. He was in a film I directed.

• 27:53Josh Horowitz?

Of course, yes. Lost River, yeah.

• 27:55Speaker 01

And when I was writing, it was on and I heard his voice and I was like, I started writing him into the script because I heard him on TV. So, huge Matt Smith fan and just was so over the moon to have him on Star Wars. It just was like, I knew we were in great hands.

• 28:17Josh Horowitz?

Has he ever played the game with you? He plays this game with me, movie star or actor. He names somebody and says, are they a movie star or are they an actor?

• 28:24Speaker 01

  Oh, that sounds...

• 28:25Josh Horowitz?

  Diabolical.

• 28:26Speaker 01

  Diabolical.

• 28:26Josh Horowitz?

  You're both. Don't worry.

• 28:28Speaker 01

No, I wasn't thinking about it. I'm just, what a crazy...

• 28:31Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 28:32Speaker 01

  You played on camera?

• 28:33Josh Horowitz?

I played it on camera with him.

• 28:34Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 28:34Josh Horowitz?

Dangerous. Living on the edge. So, I'm not gonna ask you any Star Wars plot things, but I'm just curious. Like, you, you obviously grew up with Star Wars, right? Like, 1 to 10, how obsessive a Star Wars kid were you? And what does it mean to you?

• 28:46Speaker 01

I didn't see it until very late.

• 28:47Josh Horowitz?

  Seriously?

• 28:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 28:49Josh Horowitz?

You were watching Days of Our Lives instead of Star Wars?

• 28:51Speaker 01

Yes. But I, I had Star Wars sheets. The first sheets I ever had were Star Wars.

• 28:57Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 28:57Speaker 01

And I had them in my trailer when I made the movie.

• 29:02Josh Horowitz?

  Same sheets?

• 29:02Speaker 01

  Don't make that weird.

• 29:03Josh Horowitz?

I didn't know, that was involuntary. I can't control my face sometimes.

• 29:05Speaker 01

But why did you think it was weird even for a second?

• 29:07Josh Horowitz?

Wait, are they the same childhood sheets? Or you like went on eBay, you're like, let me find those?

• 29:11Speaker 01

So I still have the childhood sheets. My mom kept them. I didn't keep them.

• 29:15Josh Horowitz?

  I didn't say anything.

• 29:16Speaker 01

When I told my mom I was doing the movie, she was like, I still have the sheets.

• 29:21Speaker 01

So I had them for inspiration.

• 29:23Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 29:25Speaker 01

Now that you've made it weird.

• 29:26Josh Horowitz?

No, I didn't make it weird. It's a sweet story.

• 29:28Speaker 01

No, no, no, no, no. That's fine.

• 29:31Josh Horowitz?

What's the day like when Tom Cruise directs you on a Star Wars film?

• 29:35Speaker 01

I wasn't there. It's the one day I'm not there.

• 29:38Josh Horowitz?

  I'm sorry.

• 29:39Speaker 01

I worked on that movie the whole time. I get one day off.

• 29:42Josh Horowitz?

  TC comes in.

• 29:43Speaker 01

And I'm like, and Sean sends me a picture of him and Tom Cruise and Flynn.

• 29:49Josh Horowitz?

  Your young star, yep.

• 29:52Speaker 01

They're like in the mud. I was like, what?

• 29:55Josh Horowitz?

  He's like, wait for me!

• 29:56Speaker 01

And they're like, yeah, Tom Cruise flew his helicopter onto set.

• 29:59Josh Horowitz?

  That's how he does it.

• 30:01Speaker 01

They were just shooting and they heard a helicopter and they had to cut. And it was Tom Cruise. He lands in the middle of set. He takes a camera and he just starts shooting the action scene.

• 30:12Josh Horowitz?

None of that seems odd to me. That feels right on brand.

• 30:15Speaker 01

There's a shot of him in the mud with Flynn, shooting Flynn. And this is Flynn's first... Anyway, I mean, it's not his first film, but it's like one of his first films. It was an incredible moment. And I don't know why he waited for the one day I wasn't there. Hope that was an accident.

• 30:32Josh Horowitz?

Would you like to take this moment to finally formally announce that you're Ghost Rider? Ryan, what's... You know I've tried to make this happen for you. I've done everything in my power.

• 30:40Speaker 01

  You're not working hard enough.

• 30:41Josh Horowitz?

  It's my fault?

• 30:42Speaker 01

  It might be.

• 30:45Speaker 01

  I don't say.

• 30:47Josh Horowitz?

Do you think it'll happen at some point? Is it still a possibility?

• 30:49Speaker 01

  We keep hope alive.

• 30:51Josh Horowitz?

Have you broken bread with Kevin Feige in the last couple of years? You've had that discussion.

• 30:55Speaker 01

Some discussions have been had. It's a complicated situation.

• 31:00Josh Horowitz?

Why... Can you just tell me... Eva must hold this over your head. She's been in Ghost Rider and you haven't. This must be a very sore point at home. I don't want to make it awkward, but...

• 31:07Speaker 01

I'm just happy one of us got to do it.

• 31:09Josh Horowitz?

That's so sweet. Why was Ghost Rider the one? Why is that character the one that you've mentioned to me and others in the past?

• 31:18Speaker 01

  It's just a feeling.

• 31:21Josh Horowitz?

You just want to set your face on fire.

• 31:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:25Josh Horowitz?

Okay, okay. Were you a comic book kid growing up or no?

• 31:29Speaker 01

  Not really.

• 31:30Josh Horowitz?

Okay. Days of our lives, consuming all your time.

• 31:32Speaker 01

I was watching Days of our Lives, and I was working.

• 31:34Josh Horowitz?

  Right, you were.

• 31:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:36Josh Horowitz?

You were in that Mickey. When is the Mickey Mouse Club gonna come back, by the way? That should be rebooted.

• 31:41Speaker 01

  It should.

• 31:41Josh Horowitz?

  Right?

• 31:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:42Josh Horowitz?

Do you want to announce that you're the new EP of the Mickey Mouse Club today? That you're rebooting it?

• 31:46Speaker 01

Hmm, no. I don't. Should I give up? We call it MMC?

• 31:53Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, that's what the cool kids call it.

• 31:55Speaker 01

  Our season was MMC?

• 31:56Josh Horowitz?

  Was it really?

• 31:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:57Josh Horowitz?

  Okay, sorry.

• 31:58Speaker 01

It got changed from Mickey Mouse Club to MMC.

• 32:01Josh Horowitz?

Wow, I can see you take pride in that.

• 32:03Speaker 01

  I do.

• 32:04Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. Should I give up on the Nice Guys sequel at this point? People still will never stop asking for that.

• 32:10Speaker 01

Don't ask me about it, because then I gotta talk about Angry Birds, and then everyone's gonna say, "Oh, he's obsessed with Angry Birds."

• 32:15Josh Horowitz?

Angry Birds beat you at the box.

• 32:17Speaker 01

This guy's still going on about Angry Birds.

• 32:19Josh Horowitz?

  It's more like Angry Ryan.

• 32:21Speaker 01

Yes. Well, you know who's angry?

• 32:25Josh Horowitz?

For context, for those that don't know, it's been brought up. Yeah, Angry Birds beat Nice Guys at the box office. But what's the cultural footprint of Angry Birds today versus Nice Guys?

• 32:34Speaker 01

  You said it. Not me.

• 32:39Josh Horowitz?

  Ready for another musical?

• 32:40Speaker 01

Maybe it's a mashup of Angry Birds meets Nice Guys. That, that might be the only way.

• 32:45Josh Horowitz?

Right, ride the coattails of the birds.

• 32:46Speaker 01

  That happens.

• 32:49Josh Horowitz?

How do we get up to this? A musical. You know what's lying out there, waiting for you?

• 32:53Speaker 01

  What?

• 32:53Josh Horowitz?

Sky Masterson, Guys and Dolls. There, I did it.

• 32:56Speaker 01

  Oh, that's interesting.

• 32:59Speaker 01

  Okay. Tell me more.

• 33:02Josh Horowitz?

  Who's directing?

• 33:03Speaker 01

  You?

• 33:04Josh Horowitz?

Oh, who's it? No, it's not me. It's definitely not me. Who's attached now? I forget. Someone great. Are you ready for another musical? I mean, did the Barbie musical vibes, did it scratch that itch? That's not a full-on musical. I mean, obviously, La La Land back in the day, but it's been a minute.

• 33:19Speaker 01

Does it count as a musical?

• 33:20Josh Horowitz?

  It does, I think it.

• 33:21Speaker 01

  It's musical, curious.

• 33:23Josh Horowitz?

  Musical adjacent?

• 33:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 33:24Josh Horowitz?

How many beta blockers were you on the night of the Oscars, singing?

• 33:28Speaker 01

  Oh, my lord.

• 33:29Josh Horowitz?

  I'm just kidding.

• 33:30Speaker 01

None, but that's like a, I should have considered that.

• 33:33Josh Horowitz?

You seemed very, I mean, you killed it. Like, but like, in your brain, were you, "That's a big audience. That's a big moment. That's a big swing." What'd be in your head that night?

• 33:43Speaker 01

I was just hoping that Slash would show up.

• 33:47Speaker 01

The whole idea, I basically sold them on this idea that the only way I could do it is if we had, I forget what the number was, but like a hundred Kens.

• 33:59Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 34:00Speaker 01

And a Busby Berkeley number and Slash. Like, I thought I gave them an impossible.

• 34:07Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 34:09Josh Horowitz?

And then they said Slash is in, you're like, Slash is never in.

• 34:11Speaker 01

And they were like, we'll do it. And I was like, okay. But Slash was in Thailand? The night before?

• 34:22Josh Horowitz?

  Of course he was.

• 34:23Speaker 01

They were like, Slash is gonna be in Thailand the night before. He can't, you know? And I was like, well, then I can't because it's all about Slash at the end. If we don't have Slash at the end, we don't have a show.

• 34:35Speaker 01

And they're like, Slash says he'll get on a plane and he'll do it. So we were rehearsing for weeks with this, like, with the idea that Slash might come.

• 34:45Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 34:46Speaker 01

And even through to the dress rehearsal, right before we did the show, and I came down the hallway and I saw this guitar case and it had like a skull with a top hat on it.

• 35:01Speaker 01

And I knew that Slash had arrived.

• 35:04Josh Horowitz?

  Magic.

• 35:05Speaker 01

  And he was...

• 35:06Josh Horowitz?

  Pure Slash?

• 35:07Speaker 01

  So Slash.

• 35:08Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 35:09Speaker 01

He shredded. He was so cool. He had like, was, had like, had been working on the part, memorizing it. He just was like, couldn't have been cooler and he saved the day. I don't, I don't think that show works without Slash at the end.

• 35:23Josh Horowitz?

The next musical number, you're gonna be like, only if Deirdre Hall is possessed live on stage with me.

• 35:29Speaker 01

No, I did it again recently with a SNL monologue where I had this whole...

• 35:34Josh Horowitz?

  With Harry Styles?

• 35:34Speaker 01

It's like, the whole thing, my whole idea was based on Harry Styles being in the audience. And then they agreed and then suddenly it was like, wait, where's Harry? Where, does anyone know Harry Styles? And then he was gonna be in Manchester the night before and they're like, it was a saying, it was like, why am I doing this to myself?

• 35:54Speaker 01

  But again.

• 35:55Josh Horowitz?

You manifest these things. You have power.

• 35:57Speaker 01

He came and saved the day.

• 35:59Josh Horowitz?

Do you ever get imposter syndrome at this point on a set? You're Ryan Gosling. You step on a set. Do you ever feel like, oh, I'm gonna get fired? Oh, this is gonna crash and burn. Does that still happen? Or at this point, or do you feel a little more confident?

• 36:11Speaker 01

I have been let go before, so it's not like unearned.

• 36:14Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 36:15Speaker 01

  You know, it's happened.

• 36:17Josh Horowitz?

  Lovely bones.

• 36:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:20Josh Horowitz?

What's the day like after? You've gained 60 pounds for that.

• 36:23Speaker 01

Yeah, and pulled all my hair out.

• 36:25Josh Horowitz?

Pulled all your hair out, and then you've parted ways.

• 36:28Speaker 01

I've been drinking Haagen-Dazs for five months.

• 36:30Josh Horowitz?

And you're sitting with that weight and all of that, and like, that's weird, that's a...

• 36:35Speaker 01

  And now I'm unemployed.

• 36:36Josh Horowitz?

That's a dark place to be in.

• 36:38Speaker 01

  It wasn't great.

• 36:39Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 36:41Speaker 01

  It wasn't great.

• 36:41Josh Horowitz?

  You bounced back.

• 36:43Speaker 01

But I thought Mark Wahlberg killed it.

• 36:46Josh Horowitz?

  He did. He did.

• 36:48Speaker 01

  It was a better choice.

• 36:50Josh Horowitz?

  It worked out for everybody.

• 36:51Speaker 01

  Absolutely. Who was I kidding?

• 36:54Josh Horowitz?

You would've been great too. What are you talking about? All right, we're gonna end with this. Happy second few profoundly random questions.

• 37:00Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 37:00Josh Horowitz?

  Ready, Ryan?

• 37:01Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 37:02Josh Horowitz?

  Dogs or cats?

• 37:06Speaker 01

  I don't like this.

• 37:07Josh Horowitz?

  What?

• 37:07Speaker 01

Why do I have to choose?

• 37:08Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, I mean, you can like them both. It's okay, but you're, you are a dog guy.

• 37:13Speaker 01

Well, no, I, my, I have a cat.

• 37:14Josh Horowitz?

  You have a cat too?

• 37:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 37:15Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 37:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 37:16Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 37:17Speaker 01

And I grew up with cats too, but I don't know, they're both, they're just, they're just furry little angels.

• 37:23Josh Horowitz?

  Okay, fair enough.

• 37:26Josh Horowitz?

What do you collect, if anything?

• 37:28Speaker 01

  What do I collect?

• 37:31Josh Horowitz?

Memorabilia. Do you have stuff from sets, knickknacks?

• 37:34Speaker 01

I have some things from films I've done.

• 37:36Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. I was trying to find my, I have a drive scorpion jacket somewhere in my closet, and I was trying to find it. I think my wife has hidden it from me because she never wants me to wear it in public.

• 37:45Speaker 01

  No way. That's cool.

• 37:47Josh Horowitz?

Favorite video game of all time?

• 37:50Speaker 01

  Pitfall.

• 37:51Josh Horowitz?

Oh, yeah? Okay. It's like Atari.

• 37:53Speaker 01

I like to jump on the alligators.

• 37:57Josh Horowitz?

  I started a non sequitur.

• 37:58Speaker 01

Yeah, I drove it. What's that?

• 38:01Josh Horowitz?

Dakota Johnson memorial question. She asked me this. I ask everybody, would you rather have a mouthful of bees or one bee in your butt? Did you observe all that?

• 38:09Speaker 01

  Mouthful of bees.

• 38:10Josh Horowitz?

Not many people, that's the minority opinion.

• 38:12Speaker 01

  Really?

• 38:13Josh Horowitz?

Mm-hmm. Most people just want to get-

• 38:14Speaker 01

Most people would like to have-

• 38:15Josh Horowitz?

  Just the one bee.

• 38:17Speaker 01

  But, no, don't.

• 38:18Josh Horowitz?

  I'm not-

• 38:19Speaker 01

It's where the one bee, it's where the one bee, really?

• 38:21Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, just get it over with.

• 38:22Speaker 01

That's common, that's the common answer?

• 38:23Josh Horowitz?

I would say 85% of people say. But you're a unicorn, you're special, I know.

• 38:28Speaker 01

What a world we live in.

• 38:30Josh Horowitz?

What's the wallpaper on your phone?

• 38:32Speaker 01

Oh, oh my god. It's this two, um, there's like a game that my kids play, um, where you create your own characters.

• 38:42Josh Horowitz?

  Oh.

• 38:42Speaker 01

And Ava and I got to create our own, so-

• 38:45Josh Horowitz?

Oh, can we see it? Is it anywhere?

• 38:47Speaker 01

I haven't, maybe I'll show it to you after.

• 38:49Josh Horowitz?

Okay, fair enough. I'll describe it to you guys later.

• 38:50Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 38:52Josh Horowitz?

Couple more. Last actor you were mistaken for. It still ever happen?

• 38:59Speaker 01

I mean, I may get asked for a Deadpool autograph every once in a while. And maybe I, maybe I sign it.

• 39:07Josh Horowitz?

Do you, oh, you do it? You just go for it?

• 39:08Speaker 01

  No, I don't.

• 39:08Josh Horowitz?

Okay. And the worst note a director has ever given you?

• 39:13Josh Horowitz?

What sticks out in your brain?

• 39:14Speaker 01

There was this one, there was this one studio guy that wanted me to say, he wanted me to say like, "Damn, ice cold."

• 39:24Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 39:25Speaker 01

And I was like, hmm, how would I say that? Why, why, how would I say that? And he was like, you know, just say like, "Damn, ice, ice cold." And it was like, okay. And he, and he was telling me that it would really sizzle if I said it. He kept saying it would sizzle. His word was like, "But you want it to sizzle."

• 39:43Josh Horowitz?

  Man, it's gonna sizzle.

• 39:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:45Josh Horowitz?

That could be your catchphrase now.

• 39:46Speaker 01

Sizzle would be stuck in my head.

• 39:47Josh Horowitz?

Did you ever say it on, on camera? What?

• 39:49Speaker 01

I didn't. It was another time I was almost let go.

• 39:52Josh Horowitz?

  Damn, ice cold.

• 39:53Speaker 01

And that was, but you're not gonna make me say it now.

• 39:55Josh Horowitz?

You just did it. You said it.

• 39:57Speaker 01

  Oh my god.

• 39:58Josh Horowitz?

  It'll sizzle.

• 39:59Speaker 01

  Damn, I did it.

• 39:59Josh Horowitz?

  It'll sizzle.

• 40:00Speaker 01

  Did it, did it sizzle?

• 40:03Speaker 01

Ryan, this has been a long time coming. I thank you, I appreciate you. We've come a long way, "hey girl" to this. How did we get here? I don't know. I don't know. But it's always a pleasure. Right back at you. Congratulations. You're the best. Stop it. It's true. Everyone wants to talk to you. You're the one. You're gonna make me cry. You're the one. You're the one. Congratulations. I'm so happy for you and all of your success. I don't know how to process this. And you've been so supportive of me. You have. You really tried to... You talked to Kevin. You tried to make that happen. I'm trying. Do you need me to talk like Chris Nolan? What do you need me to... Anybody else? It doesn't matter what date. That you did that, that's what matters. That's who he is. I just want the best for you. That's who you are. Project Hail Mary. You killed it. Can I come on the dog... Don't. The dog cast.

• 40:48Speaker 01

Don't fuck with me, man. No.

• 40:51Speaker 01

That sounds also fun. Who's a good guest, coming soon. Ryan Gosling. Cool. And your dog. What's the dog's name? Magic. Magic. Thank you, buddy. Appreciate you.

And so ends another edition of Happy, Sad, Confused. Remember to review, rate, and subscribe to this show on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm a big podcast person. I'm Daisy Ridley, and I definitely wasn't prepared to do this by Josh.

Hey, it's Hilary Frank, host of The Longest Shortest Time, a women's health podcast for everyone. And exciting news. I've got a new original audiobook. It's called Wedlocked, and it's a thriller about the pressure on women to smile through pain. There's marital strife, gaslighting, gynecology, and creepy music, which is running under me right now. If you like thrillers with a social message, like Get Out, Promising Young Woman, then Wedlocked is for you. Get it now, wherever you buy audiobooks.
