• 2:28Bill Simmons?

All right, Heaven Can Wait, our first Warren Beatty movie. You said this was one of your favorite movies.

• 2:32Speaker 04

  Absolutely.

• 2:33Bill Simmons?

  How come?

• 2:34Speaker 04

It was on all the time when I was a kid. And, you know, looking back at it and doing some research on the movie, didn't have any idea that it was taken as seriously as what it was. Like a real critical and commercial hit.

• 2:46Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 2:47Speaker 04

But it was kind of just like a delightful, whimsical, metaphysical heaven movie, which they had a lot of back then. There was this one, there was The Heavenly Kid, there was Oh God, and Oh God Book Two. A lot of movies that dealt with death and angels and God and stuff. They don't really do that much of those.

• 3:04Bill Simmons?

All culminating in Highway to Heaven with Michael Landon.

• 3:07Speaker 04

Highway to Heaven with Michael Landon, which was a whole cultural phenomenon. But this is one of my favorite movies when I was a kid.

• 3:12Chris Ryan?

A really, really amazing screwball comedy. Watching it again this time, it was just so great to see how like the bones of like The Philadelphia Story and Here's Girl Friday and kind of all the great comedies from the 30s and 40s informed this. And, you know, with all the people involved, it's sort of amazing to look at Warren Beatty and think about how famous he was and how he put all of his cred and energy into making this, which is essentially like this really light, sweet comedy.

• 3:41Bill Simmons?

I like his theory on, he's another one of those guys who put a lot of thought into stardom.

• 3:46Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 3:46Bill Simmons?

And sometimes you just have to let the camera chew you up and just be handsome.

• 3:50Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 3:51Bill Simmons?

Talk in a low voice and just stare at a woman and just keep staring and they stare back and then you stare some more and you just seem like a movie star.

• 3:58Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 3:58Bill Simmons?

Very few people can do this. I think Brad Pitt can do this now. I think that was a big part of it.

• 4:02Chris Ryan?

  The minimalist approach.

• 4:03Bill Simmons?

Once upon a time in Hollywood, he's basically doing that with Cliff. But very few people, I mean, who could do it now who's under 40?

• 4:10Chris Ryan?

I mean, I think also the way the movies are made and written and produced like demands a lot more. There's a, I mean, there's a lot of exposition in this movie, but actors are required to do so many different things now. It's, it's crazy. It's like, I guess you could say like he's a convincing LA Rams quarterback in this movie, but Woody really is.

• 4:28Speaker 04

  Like throws a good football.

• 4:29Chris Ryan?

He's a convincing LA rich guy and he's a convincing LA playboy and he's a convincing like it's like he just has this like star power at the center of this movie and the movie is actually just like a temple built to that.

• 4:41Speaker 04

He's also a convincing everyman playing. Mm hmm.

• 4:45Bill Simmons?

  Different dudes, yeah.

• 4:46Speaker 04

Right, which you have to be able to charisma yourself in and out of that as well. There's just not a lot of guys out there or stars out there. We look at movies, I think, in a different way now. That you could give them a movie and go, if you're good in this, the movie works and if you're bad in it, it doesn't.

• 5:04Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it's the Burt Reynolds. And Burt Reynolds is probably somebody else who could have tried to play this role. I don't know if he pulls off the rich part of it the same way, the Leo Pendleton. He pulls off all the football stuff. But I think what was so interesting about Warren Beatty is that he could be Leo Pendleton and it's believable that he's also Tom Jarron.

• 5:22Chris Ryan?

Or Joe. Joe Pendleton and Leo Farnsworth.

• 5:25Bill Simmons?

Leo Farnsworth, I'm getting my Joe and Leos.

• 5:27Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 5:28Bill Simmons?

Be Joe Pendleton, Leo Farnsworth, and then just step into the Super Bowl quarterback at the end.

• 5:33Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 5:33Bill Simmons?

And I believe all three things. I also would have believed him as a German race car driver.

• 5:38Chris Ryan?

  Yeah. High wire walker, yeah.

• 5:41Bill Simmons?

By the way, I could have spent five more minutes with that. Maybe he could have driven the car.

• 5:44Speaker 04

He didn't like the guy because he didn't speak English.

• 5:45Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it was seventies, didn't really like Germans that much.

• 5:48Speaker 04

Oh, still hadn't got over it, but Burt Reynolds is interesting because you, you, obviously the football stuff would be amazing, right?

• 5:58Bill Simmons?

  He'd almost be too good.

• 5:59Speaker 04

Almost be too good at the football stuff like he was in The Long Shot, but Warren Beatty de-pretties himself in this movie. Like he seems, he's like legitimately one of the hunkiest, dreamiest, best looking guys ever. But he plays it so goofily and with so much heart that you believe that he is the dude that is on the outside of everything that is glitzy and glamorous and full of money.

• 6:24Bill Simmons?

I read the book again, which I really liked when it came out. Peter Biskin's biography of him in 2010, which is very pre too. There's a lot of sex stuff in there that I now think would be written differently.

• 6:34Speaker 04

  Pre too.

• 6:35Bill Simmons?

  Pre too.

• 6:35Chris Ryan?

  I didn't know that was a phrase.

• 6:36Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 6:37Chris Ryan?

  I just made it up.

• 6:37Speaker 04

  Did you really?

• 6:38Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 6:38Speaker 04

Just on the cuff just now?

• 6:40Bill Simmons?

  Uh, yeah.

• 6:41Chris Ryan?

That's up there with the basketball pyramid.

• 6:42Speaker 04

Oh, Bill, I gotta be honest with you. I, look, I am anti dick riding and I never will do it.

• 6:48Chris Ryan?

I could, I could have just made that up.

• 6:49Speaker 04

  But I, I don't, that's not a thing that I do. But I would be remiss if I didn't give you props.

• 6:55Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, thanks.

• 6:56Speaker 04

You just made that up. Now, if I read this in Vanity Fair somewhere or something like that, I would be.

• 7:01Bill Simmons?

Pre too is like a vulture piece in 2023.

• 7:04Speaker 04

I gotta give it up that that's pretty.

• 7:05Chris Ryan?

That could be a, what's the most pre too thing about this movie?

• 7:07Speaker 04

  Oh, we gotta add it.

• 7:08Bill Simmons?

Well, all these stories in there is like, yeah, six times a day and then he'd get tired of somebody. And just stuff like you wouldn't write about it as. Oh, this is one of the things about mid Warren Beatty so interesting.

• 7:18Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 7:18Bill Simmons?

He had sex with a lot of women and then he wouldn't call them back or he'd get bored of somebody. Um, but apparently by all accounts, just, just got it done.

• 7:28Chris Ryan?

  Mm hmm.

• 7:29Bill Simmons?

  Just a swordsman.

• 7:30Chris Ryan?

Yeah. That's what shampoo is basically about.

• 7:33Bill Simmons?

A sword, there's a part in the book about, he was such a reputation as a swordsman that he felt like a pressure for it because he felt like when he was with a woman, they were expecting, you know, a dirt digger type experience. He said, I'm just a normal guy. But he would, you know, take these different vitamins to try to have more energy and just trying to keep up the legend. I mean, he was with, he was with Madonna, remember? He showed up in the Truth or Dare documentary.

• 7:57Speaker 04

So when I'm first getting an idea of who, uh, Warren Beatty is, it's, he's dating Madonna.

• 8:05Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 8:05Speaker 04

She's the biggest thing in the world. It's Heaven Can Wait. Um, and it's, uh, a little while after that is about star, it's Dick Tracy.

• 8:15Chris Ryan?

  And and then Bugsy.

• 8:16Speaker 04

And then Bugsy. And then Bugsy becomes such a huge deal and it doesn't land with a thud, but it doesn't land like he wanted it to.

• 8:23Chris Ryan?

But had a lot of Oscar nominations.

• 8:24Speaker 04

  It did.

• 8:25Chris Ryan?

We always talk about it that year. It was like a big Bugsy.

• 8:27Speaker 04

Yeah, that was a big premiere magazine movie.

• 8:30Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 8:30Speaker 04

Yeah, um, but then imagine being me and you were introduced to Carrie Fisher and Warren Beatty in Star Wars. And in Dick Tracy and Heaven Can Wait and then you see Shampoo. Shampoo blew my mind.

• 8:46Chris Ryan?

Oh, yeah. Shampoo's an incredible movie.

• 8:48Speaker 04

Yeah, but just the adultness of it.

• 8:50Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 8:50Speaker 04

And how she was in the movie and how he was in the movie.

• 8:53Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 8:53Speaker 04

I was like, oh, then, you know, that's when people who have seen movies go, no, this guy was like, he was the guy of the town. Like he was the Richard Gere of his era or something like that.

• 9:04Chris Ryan?

I always think about him in relationship to Redford around this time period because they're two very obviously famous movie stars who took real control over their careers, whether as producers or director producers or what have you. And Redford, I think for the most part, kind of set the tone for the kind of movie star, especially the great actors that we have now, like a DiCaprio, say, for instance. Where it seems like every time Leonardo DiCaprio works, he wants to push the ball forward. It's an important movie. Sometimes it's about, most of the times it's about an important issue, right? But then there's like this era where Warren Beatty would make these big movies and they were important, but they were also like pretty good times at the movies.

• 9:45Chris Ryan?

Like he was still remembering the entertainment value of like just hanging out with a group of people in Los Angeles for two hours. And I think that that's something that's sort of been lost, but Redford was also like a really big, I feel like Redford made issue movies. I feel like he made movies because he was like, this is an important film that everybody needs to see. Do you see kind of like the comparison I'm making a little bit?

• 10:04Bill Simmons?

And then Newman was always trying to prove that he was more than what people thought he was.

• 10:08Chris Ryan?

Right. Warren Beatty was just like, I don't want to make a lot of money with this movie, or I want this to hit for me in a real way.

• 10:16Speaker 04

Well, this kind of did both. I guess, to your point, I wonder if our appetites have changed to the point to where those issue movies that guys make now, that like, we can't have, we can't have fun and be serious in it.

• 10:30Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 10:31Speaker 04

It doesn't seem like the screwball comedy is the type of movie that's gonna get like, taken seriously by the critics, or is gonna get you lauded in a way. You either have to go, look, it's me, it's Denis, we're in the desert, we're doing something. Or you have to decide, hey, you guys come have some fun, I'm gonna do, go do a movie with the Farrelly brothers, or with Adam McCarver.

• 10:52Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 10:52Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 10:52Chris Ryan?

And I don't know whether that's a good or bad thing, the times have changed. Like, if George Clooney made this movie 10 years ago, even, even, even 10 years ago, you could see it being in like, a nice Amazon movie that you watch, like randomly on a Friday night. And like, oh, that was cool. This is a $100 million movie that got mad Oscar nominations.

• 11:12Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 11:13Chris Ryan?

Like, it was like the centerpiece of the filmmaking culture.

• 11:16Bill Simmons?

The other thing he did, he was always the star of the movie. He never fucked around, he's never like, I'll take this, I'll take the Matt Damon part in Ocean's Eleven. Like, he never would have done that, he would have been Clooney. He was always like, I'm gonna be the guy in the movie. If there's a best looking woman in the movie, that's gonna belong to me in the movie, and I'm gonna be the winner in the end. He also died in a lot of movies too, which he wasn't afraid to. Like Bonnie and Clyde, I mean Bonnie and Clyde, it all takes off. That's 1967.

• 11:44Chris Ryan?

  Yep.

• 11:45Bill Simmons?

And he rigs it so that he makes it, he's, he ends up making a shitload of money from it. He does an Almond movie, he does Parallax View, does Shampoo, does Heaven Can Wait, does Reds. He only makes, I mean, really, like, six, six real big movies in like, a 14 year span.

• 12:02Chris Ryan?

Yeah, he's very particular, he was very deliberate.

• 12:05Bill Simmons?

Can we talk about what he turned down?

• 12:07Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 12:08Bill Simmons?

  The Sundance Kid? Yeah.

• 12:10Chris Ryan?

  Uh huh.

• 12:11Bill Simmons?

Michael Corleone, which would have been ridiculous. Later, he turned down Gordon Gekko and Jack Horner.

• 12:16Chris Ryan?

  Mm hmm.

• 12:17Speaker 04

The Gekko role he should have took.

• 12:18Bill Simmons?

He would have been an amazing, I, the one, the one real regret he said he had was not doing Jack Horner. He really wished he had done that one. Um, and there's apparently, I don't know how apocryphal this is, that he was pushing to play Dirk Diggler.

• 12:30Chris Ryan?

He was pushing to, well, he was, oh, for Boogie Nights.

• 12:33Bill Simmons?

  For Boogie Nights.

• 12:33Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 12:34Bill Simmons?

And PTA was like, no, he's like a seventeen year old kid.

• 12:39Chris Ryan?

  Fifty-eight.

• 12:39Bill Simmons?

Like you can't, he said, no, no, here's how it would work.

• 12:42Chris Ryan?

He was also, uh, he got pretty far down the road with playing Bill in Kill Bill.

• 12:47Bill Simmons?

Right. He had that. He had The Sting, Great Gatsby, Superman was the original call for that. Splash, Big, Dave, Indecent Proposal, which would have been great. And then Misery, which Goldman wrote about in his book and Be, and Warren Beatty just didn't want to be in the bed for that long. He felt like he was like neutered in the bed. He couldn't do it.

• 13:08Speaker 04

You know what? When you look at that, when you look at that list of movies that he turned down, and then you look at some of the movies that he did, it's interesting why he would make some of the decisions, like, or maybe it's just because, okay, so he does like Dick Tracy, which is a,

• 13:24Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 13:25Speaker 04

Like this big, beautiful disaster, basically, right? Um, well, the movie that means a lot to me, but like the movie's kind of like all over the place or like whatever. Uh, I love Dick Tracy, by the way. But like, to look at the script from Misery and then kind of not want to do it.

• 13:41Bill Simmons?

I think he did want to do it. He just couldn't a hundred percent get there. Cause he kept circling back and like, and then he's like, I don't know, in the bed, and he couldn't get past the crippling scene.

• 13:51Speaker 04

  Hmm. Yeah.

• 13:52Bill Simmons?

That was a big thing for him. He either wanted to be the hero or he wanted to have like a violent death, but to be, play a guy who got crippled.

• 13:57Chris Ryan?

  Just limping around, yeah.

• 13:58Bill Simmons?

Couldn't like get his head around it. He also made three movies with Julie Christie. He made McCabe and Mrs. Miller, which was the Altman movie, Shampoo.

• 14:06Chris Ryan?

  Mm hmm.

• 14:06Bill Simmons?

They broke up. And then they did Heaven Can Wait and it was, they both dated different people after, but still had some sort of connection.

• 14:14Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, it seems like he-

• 14:14Bill Simmons?

And there's some really good stories about them doing 80 takes of the same scene and them having a little cat and mouse game on the set.

• 14:22Chris Ryan?

He's proto Fincher and like apparently made Jack Nicholson cry on Reds where Jack Nicholson's just like, what the fuck do you want from me?

• 14:28Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 14:29Chris Ryan?

  And you know, like Hackman-

• 14:31Bill Simmons?

  Just do it again, Sierra.

• 14:31Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 14:32Bill Simmons?

Do it again, Sierra. Do it one more time. And then you're not even getting notes?

• 14:36Chris Ryan?

I just have to do Wayne Jenkins.

• 14:37Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 14:38Speaker 04

You made a new Wayne Jenkins over and over and over until you got it right.

• 14:41Bill Simmons?

  20 times, baby.

• 14:42Chris Ryan?

Do you think Beatty has faded a little bit in terms of, uh, like the star power or the, the level of attraction that these 70s films have? Like, I think that, I think that these are some of the great movies of the last 50, 60 years. Bonnie and Clyde, McCabe, Mrs. Miller, Parallax, Parallax especially. But Shampoo and He- and Heaven and Reds. But I feel like he's less kind of highly regarded than Redford. And maybe even Hackman and Pacino and De Niro, the guys that come right immediately after him.

• 15:14Bill Simmons?

I agree. I think it's because the movies didn't, I mean, this is the first rewatchables we've ever done for him.

• 15:20Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 15:20Bill Simmons?

Think about that. We've done 17 Tom Cruise movies. We've done 11, 13 Pacino movies.

• 15:26Chris Ryan?

We've done multiple David Caruso movies at this point.

• 15:28Bill Simmons?

We've done 10 De Niro movies. I think some of them feel very 70s-ish or 60s-ish.

• 15:34Chris Ryan?

  Mm-hmm.

• 15:35Bill Simmons?

It'd be, actually it would be fun to do Bonnie and Clyde, but it's just, you know, that's so old. Movie that really feels like it came out in the 1960s.

• 15:42Speaker 04

But you know, like there are certain actors and actresses and even directors that are of their times.

• 15:47Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 15:48Speaker 04

And they have a, a more sensitive cultural expiration date than others do. So for whatever reason, also this also, there was never an unforgiven for him. There was never a movie that made everybody go, oh my God, this guy was big in the 60s.

• 16:03Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 16:03Speaker 04

Huge in the 70s and look what he can still do.

• 16:05Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 16:06Speaker 04

  Um.

• 16:07Chris Ryan?

Yeah, he's three years older than Pacino, but doesn't have like a, a movie like Heat or-

• 16:12Speaker 04

  Sin of a Woman.

• 16:13Chris Ryan?

Sin of a Woman from the 90s. That's like, oh, that's his six, when he was in his late 50s, 60s.

• 16:17Bill Simmons?

Shampoo is a crazy movie. I, I love Shampoo.

• 16:20Chris Ryan?

  Shampoo's incredible.

• 16:21Bill Simmons?

It's a crazy movie though. It'd be interesting if you just threw this on for, like, I should make my daughter watch it and see what her take is.

• 16:27Speaker 04

Always one that I thought they could get away remaking. Always, always one.

• 16:31Bill Simmons?

  Very possible.

• 16:31Speaker 04

Always one that I thought, if you take this type of story and then like sort of tune it up, dust it off a little bit and set it in a contemporary world, like it still would be a lot of fun to watch.

• 16:44Chris Ryan?

A guy throwing around in LA on January 6th.

• 16:52Bill Simmons?

  I was, I was watching.

• 16:53Chris Ryan?

A barber in LA getting laid on January 6th.

• 16:57Bill Simmons?

My wife watched this movie with me on Sunday night and at one point there, it was just a long shot on, on Warren Beatty and my wife was like, God, he was so handsome. I think that's like 90% of it.

• 17:09Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 17:09Bill Simmons?

And he also had a really good sense of who to play and what, and what to not do.

• 17:13Chris Ryan?

  And in.

• 17:14Bill Simmons?

He was like a quarterback that knew exactly what.

• 17:16Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 17:17Bill Simmons?

What, what he was, could do to move the ball down the field and he's not a scrambler and you don't want him in the, he just, I'm going to do this. This is my move.

• 17:24Chris Ryan?

In quintessential kind of screwball rom com like fashion, you could watch this film. There's a lot of plot in this.

• 17:33Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 17:33Chris Ryan?

There's a lot of stuff about like his company and Charles Grodin and Diane Cannon's relationship in the background.

• 17:39Bill Simmons?

  The town in England.

• 17:40Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, the town in England.

• 17:41Bill Simmons?

  Leberstrom.

• 17:42Chris Ryan?

But you kind of like with the people who are in it, they're so good that you're just sort of like, yeah, yeah. I get, I get basically this guy's dead. He's come back. He's fallen in love.

• 17:51Bill Simmons?

But don't you feel like it got better? The movie gets better as it goes along and then the last 40 minutes are just like lights out.

• 17:57Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 17:58Bill Simmons?

They're small. As soon as he's like playing football with the, with the servants, it's like, this is the best movie I've ever seen.

• 18:03Speaker 04

There, there are small things in the movie that just make you, that make this character one of the most lovable characters on screen. Like when he's in practice and he starts cooking and he starts jumping up and down.

• 18:15Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 18:16Speaker 04

And they're like, calm down, Mr. Farwell.

• 18:18Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 18:19Speaker 04

But he's got his entire world back. This is all he wants to do.

• 18:23Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 18:24Speaker 04

This entire movie is happening. Because the backup quarterback has been promised the starting role.

• 18:30Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 18:30Speaker 04

And he cannot get over that. And he's willing to come back from the dead or do whatever he has to do. And on the way, finds love. It really is an absurd premise. That shouldn't work but for the.

• 18:42Chris Ryan?

Yeah, it's about a backup quarterback from the Rams. But it's also about whether or not like you have a true love and the soul exists.

• 18:49Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, whether your body matters.

• 18:51Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 18:51Bill Simmons?

Whether it's just your spirit and whatever is in your eyes.

• 18:53Speaker 04

And also just about like what a good dude can undo.

• 18:58Chris Ryan?

  Hmm.

• 18:58Speaker 04

They're telling him that the porpoises are being threatened by.

• 19:03Chris Ryan?

We're being sued by a guy named Porpoise.

• 19:04Speaker 04

We're being sued by a guy named Porpoise and all of a sudden, which we'll talk about this later. I love scenes with every man in boardrooms, in big meeting rooms.

• 19:14Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 19:14Speaker 04

  Like, uh, Dave.

• 19:16Bill Simmons?

  I was gonna say Dave.

• 19:17Chris Ryan?

  This is a huge influence.

• 19:18Bill Simmons?

Wait, so you're telling me 200 million and we're gonna make people feel better about their cars?

• 19:23Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 19:24Bill Simmons?

And that's gonna cost 50 million?

• 19:25Speaker 04

He, no, he goes, I don't want to tell some kid that they have to sleep in their car.

• 19:29Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 19:29Speaker 04

So that somebody else feels better about their car. Do you want to tell them that? No, Mr. President. I'm like, get his motherfucking ass.

• 19:35Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 19:35Speaker 04

I'm like, get him, Dave. Um, and so, you know, you just love the guy so much. You want him to win a Super Bowl by the end of the movie.

• 19:44Bill Simmons?

  Well, Julie Christie,

• 19:48Bill Simmons?

who had 1965 and all time Apex Mountain, where she won best actress for Darling, but also was in Doctor Zhivago, which was one of the 10 biggest movies of the, of the 20th century. And then had a really good career and really picked her spots. And was in, was not one of those, oh, I'm gonna do my version of Sleeping with the Enemy. She's like just making good movies. And ends up in Don't Look Now, which I think is right around when she broke up with Beatty. Cause there was this whole thing about she might've had sex with Donald Southern or maybe she didn't. It was a whole, and I think it drove Warren Beatty crazy. Does Shampoo is in Nashville. And then, this was kind of her last, like, really big movie. Like, she turned down some big parts and Reds,

• 20:31Bill Simmons?

and she was supposed to play your, your girl Charlene Rampling's part in The Verdict.

• 20:34Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 20:35Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 20:36Chris Ryan?

  She turned that down?

• 20:37Bill Simmons?

Turned that down. Um, just kinda took a step back. But, I don't know. Van, Van, is she, where, where is she in the Hall of Fame for you?

• 20:46Speaker 04

  Oh, she's not up there.

• 20:47Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 20:47Speaker 04

She's, she's, you know, uh, she's, she's maybe like out of that.

• 20:51Bill Simmons?

  Foreign Hall of Fame?

• 20:53Speaker 04

Maybe Foreign Hall of Fame. Like Monica Bellucci?

• 20:57Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 20:57Speaker 04

Type of Monica Bellucci wing of the Hall of Fame.

• 21:00Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, Monica.

• 21:00Chris Ryan?

  Judi Dench.

• 21:01Speaker 04

Judi, young Helen Mirren, like Excalibur.

• 21:07Speaker 04

Nah, I'm thinking about Excalibur. What's the movie that she?

• 21:09Bill Simmons?

  The Lady and Rain Man?

• 21:10Chris Ryan?

Yeah, it's Helen Mirren, where she plays, uh, what's her, what's her, what's her name? Morgana?

• 21:16Speaker 04

  Morgana.

• 21:16Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 21:17Bill Simmons?

  Rain Man Lady?

• 21:18Speaker 04

Can I say something about Warren Beatty?

• 21:21Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 21:22Speaker 04

Real quick? For a guy who was as suave as him, he got cucked a lot.

• 21:29Chris Ryan?

What do you mean? Oh, in movies?

• 21:31Speaker 04

Well, no. She went with Donald Sutherland, which I saw, and then he very famously got cucked when Axl Rose.

• 21:39Chris Ryan?

Can you really say he got cucked if he's taken down?

• 21:41Bill Simmons?

  Oh, with Stephanie Seymour?

• 21:42Speaker 04

Stephanie Seymour. And that was a big deal. And that, to me, was a big story.

• 21:47Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 21:47Speaker 04

About like the end of Beatty, because Beatty was still the, uh, and then Axl Rose comes along. And just like, and just, just like, takes his girl.

• 21:59Chris Ryan?

But isn't part of the, part of the magic was, was he ever like, uh? Isn't that just like, isn't this the kind of fairy dust that we're talking about that he must have? Where you're just like, how is this guy who's kind of a quirky, anxious, good-looking?

• 22:14Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 22:14Chris Ryan?

  Gray head of hair.

• 22:15Bill Simmons?

  Mmm.

• 22:16Chris Ryan?

All that stuff. But like, he doesn't look like he's an action movie star.

• 22:20Speaker 04

Last is half-full CR right here.

• 22:22Chris Ryan?

  Just saying, there's, there's something.

• 22:24Bill Simmons?

I would say if he's with, what, 20,000 women, 10,000 women, whatever.

• 22:29Speaker 04

  It doesn't matter if you.

• 22:30Bill Simmons?

There's a couple, probably a couple that go sideways.

• 22:32Chris Ryan?

Every, every once in a while, you're, you're gonna get, strike out.

• 22:35Speaker 04

  It's a numbers game.

• 22:36Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 22:36Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 22:36Chris Ryan?

But what's interesting? It's like she driving the lane.

• 22:39Bill Simmons?

Growing up, I knew nothing, and even I knew like Warren Beatty, a lot of ladies in that dude's life. Like, it was just part of the package with him in a way that I don't. Like, nobody would have that now. Nobody talk, nobody would, that wouldn't be like a selling point as a positive for an actor.

• 22:53Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 22:54Bill Simmons?

Look at all, look at all the ladies this guy gets.

• 22:56Chris Ryan?

I think that's also something that kind of dates, not, dates the movie in a good way for me, but does date it when I was watching, you know, at the beginning of the film when he's bicycling around Malibu and you're just like, this is like another planet. Like, when could you bicycle around Topanga Canyon like this?

• 23:12Bill Simmons?

But think about how many movies and TV shows were filmed in that area back then. And it just seems like the greatest place in there. There's no cars, just a beach.

• 23:19Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 23:20Bill Simmons?

Everyone could live on the beach, didn't matter.

• 23:22Speaker 04

It's beautiful. His life looks like, if you are 14, his life looks like the greatest life ever.

• 23:29Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 23:30Speaker 04

  He go, he's, he's by himself, he's working out, he's, it's like a-

• 23:35Bill Simmons?

He's making a liver and way, way shake.

• 23:37Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 23:37Speaker 04

It's like a version of Resillo.

• 23:40Bill Simmons?

  It's 78 Resillo.

• 23:41Speaker 04

78 Resillo is like, he's working out, he's grinding tape, talking to football coaches, biking around.

• 23:49Chris Ryan?

But now I just can't get the idea of Resillo playing Sopranos saxophone.

• 23:58Chris Ryan?

As he's watching Amen Thompson tape.

• 24:00Speaker 04

Coach is coming over, he's talking to him and the whole nine.

• 24:02Bill Simmons?

He's mad about Tom Jared. He's just telling random people how mad he is about Tom Jared.

• 24:07Speaker 04

Yeah, and then he gets the, the, the opportunity of his life and then things go bad and that's our inside an incident.

• 24:12Bill Simmons?

Well, uh, this was the second version of this movie. The first was, or the second film adaptation. The play was called Heaven Can Wait. They made a movie called Here Comes Mr. Jordan in 1941, and then they bought the rights. And, uh, casting what if, that's better than a casting what if. This was supposed to be a Muhammad Ali movie.

• 24:32Chris Ryan?

  Mm-hmm.

• 24:32Speaker 04

Supposed to be a boxing movie.

• 24:34Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Yeah, it was the, the original idea was it was a boxing.

• 24:37Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 24:37Bill Simmons?

And a boxer, and then he comes back and he gets to fight in the big fight. And, uh, Ali was like, no thanks.

• 24:43Chris Ryan?

And that had been kicking, kicking around, like, the boxer idea had been kicking around since the late 60s. And I think the original screenplay Coppola wrote, right?

• 24:51Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 24:51Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 24:52Bill Simmons?

It had a lot of incarnations until it got to football.

• 24:55Speaker 04

Can I give you the most pre-two fact about Julie Christie?

• 24:58Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 24:59Speaker 04

Ever? I just, just popped up.

• 25:01Chris Ryan?

You also just wanted to say pre-two.

• 25:03Speaker 04

Pre-two. I like that, Bill. I gotta be honest with you. I don't think I made it up. She was a contender for the role of Honey Ryder in the first James Bond film, Doctor No. But producer, Craig's guy-

• 25:17Speaker 04

  Uh, Albert R. Broccoli, Broccoli?

• 25:20Bill Simmons?

  Broccoli.

• 25:21Speaker 04

  Broccoli.

• 25:21Chris Ryan?

  Broccoli.

• 25:22Speaker 04

Reportedly thought that her breasts were too small. So she didn't get the role.

• 25:26Bill Simmons?

That really is a pre two.

• 25:27Speaker 04

  That's a pre two motherfucking.

• 25:29Bill Simmons?

  Factoid.

• 25:29Speaker 04

Cause he probably said that to somebody in like an interview. With like some magazine.

• 25:34Bill Simmons?

  Sixties.

• 25:35Speaker 04

  Sixties.

• 25:36Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 25:36Speaker 04

  Pre two.

• 25:37Bill Simmons?

  Just wasn't? Yeah.

• 25:38Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:39Bill Simmons?

Um, some really good late seventies sports stuff in this movie.

• 25:43Speaker 04

  It's incredible.

• 25:43Bill Simmons?

Including Deacon Jones, the Rams and Steelers in the heyday of like those seventies uniforms.

• 25:48Chris Ryan?

  Fucking Coliseum.

• 25:49Bill Simmons?

L A Coliseum, looks amazing. Kurt Goudy doing Super Bowl play by play, Dick Emberg's in here. There's a Brian Gumbel, early Brian Gumbel on the TV.

• 25:57Speaker 04

  A Brian, Chick Hearn.

• 25:59Bill Simmons?

Yeah, just, it feels like in that Rocky Balboa, late seventies kinda universe.

• 26:03Chris Ryan?

Towards the end of the film, uh, Julia Christie, she comes in after the Super Bowl and she's like trying to find the locker room. And when Beatty gives her directions, he's like, you gotta go all the way down the hallway, make three left, make a right, or you can go back around from where you came, came. And it was like, because the Coliseum was like those old stadiums that are just like.

• 26:21Bill Simmons?

  Like a maze.

• 26:21Chris Ryan?

  Mazes, yeah.

• 26:22Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Nine Oscar nominations for this movie. This movie was a big hit.

• 26:27Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 26:28Speaker 04

I, astounding. This was like a, I looked at this. And this is a, a spot of ignorance of which I have many. I, I looked at this as one of my cute quirky childhood movies. For almost the entire time.

• 26:42Bill Simmons?

Like it was like Angels in the Outfield or something.

• 26:43Speaker 04

Something like that. It was like a, an astounding how well, well received it was critically.

• 26:49Bill Simmons?

He was the second person after Orson Welles. To be nominated for producing, directing, writing and acting for the same film. He wrote it with Buck Henry.

• 26:57Chris Ryan?

  Mm hmm.

• 26:58Bill Simmons?

I feel like there are a few people from there. Jack Warden got nominated.

• 27:01Chris Ryan?

Elaine May has the co writing credit, right?

• 27:03Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 27:03Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 27:03Bill Simmons?

Oh, that's what it was. He directed with Buck Henry and then he co wrote it with Elaine May.

• 27:07Chris Ryan?

But like Robert Towne worked on it.

• 27:08Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, a lot of people.

• 27:09Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 27:10Bill Simmons?

Jack Warden and, uh, Diane Cannon both got nominations.

• 27:13Chris Ryan?

That's right. That's right, Diane Cannon.

• 27:15Bill Simmons?

We gotta talk Jack again, even though we've, we always end up talking about Jack Warden for five minutes whenever we do a Jack Warden. This is the Jack Warden wheelhouse era. This from mid seventies all the way through the verdict where it's just like if he's in the movie, it's just a win. It's like Alex Caruso right now. It's like my team's better because I have Alex Caruso. I'm just better with Jack Warden.

• 27:34Speaker 04

  I know it hurts.

• 27:36Chris Ryan?

Um, his presence with his just like wearing the like Rams windbreaker and the Rams hat. He's the trainer, right? Like that's his job.

• 27:45Bill Simmons?

It's he's the trainer, but somehow has like all this time to train a billionaire. He's not there for the Super Bowl. There's there's nine related.

• 27:54Chris Ryan?

I have a bunch of I have a bunch of Mac stuff.

• 27:56Bill Simmons?

Missed the Super Bowl because he's got to get down this murder investigation.

• 28:01Bill Simmons?

Let me know what happens. It's the biggest game we've ever had.

• 28:04Chris Ryan?

He's participating in a sting operation to get Diane Cannon.

• 28:07Bill Simmons?

Couldn't have done that on a Monday, Max?

• 28:10Speaker 04

Also, the rare trainer that has input on who's gonna start on Sunday.

• 28:14Chris Ryan?

Yep, we we have that coming up.

• 28:16Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 28:19Speaker 04

But no, like this is what I this is how I know him. I mean, this movie was essentially like how I know him.

• 28:26Chris Ryan?

  This and verdict, yeah.

• 28:27Speaker 04

This and the verdict and then, you know, carbon copy later on and all that stuff.

• 28:30Bill Simmons?

  Dirty work.

• 28:31Chris Ryan?

  Good Oscars.

• 28:33Bill Simmons?

Good Oscars, uh, obviously had no chance that year because it was a loaded thing to actually win, but getting nominated was great from a release standpoint. So it was a $9.5 million budget plus whatever Beatty got. He had points. He made almost 100 million. Top five that year, Grease, Superman, Animal House, Every Which Way But Loose, and Heaven Can Wait. Coming in sixth, Hooper. Number seven, Jaws Two, Revenge of the Pink Panther, The Deer Hunter, and Halloween.

• 29:03Chris Ryan?

Diane Cannon's in Revenge of the Pink Panther, isn't she?

• 29:05Bill Simmons?

She sure is. Yeah. And then foul play was 11th.

• 29:08Speaker 04

  People just want to have.

• 29:08Bill Simmons?

How to do it back then, Dan.

• 29:09Speaker 04

People want to have fun at the movies.

• 29:11Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 29:12Speaker 04

  People as and as.

• 29:12Bill Simmons?

Knew how to make movies back then.

• 29:14Chris Ryan?

I like Peter Sellers and I like sharks.

• 29:15Speaker 04

As much as people, as much as people hate, and there's been some hate here at The Ringer on Filo Beto and Every Which Way But Loose.

• 29:25Bill Simmons?

  Who hates that movie?

• 29:26Speaker 04

I can't remember who I was talking to. It might have been Sean. It might have been Criterion Collection himself.

• 29:31Bill Simmons?

  Oh, I should have figured.

• 29:32Chris Ryan?

You should check. I wouldn't do it. I could see Sean going either way.

• 29:36Bill Simmons?

I should have figured Snap Fantasy was gonna.

• 29:38Speaker 04

I can't remember. It's somebody that I'm talking about like how much I love those movies.

• 29:42Chris Ryan?

It's not it's not one of my favorite Clint's. Like I would get mad if we did that before like Pale Rider.

• 29:47Bill Simmons?

As a child, I thought that movie was a grand slam. It's like he's just gonna drive around with a orangutan and get fist

• 29:54Speaker 04

  And punch people?

• 29:55Bill Simmons?

  Inject this into my veins.

• 29:57Speaker 04

  And punch people?

• 29:58Bill Simmons?

The orangutan's gonna grab a banana and eat it? Oh, my God. We've done it. Roger Ebert, for Heaven Can Wait, uh, three stars.

• 30:08Chris Ryan?

  Yep.

• 30:09Bill Simmons?

He said, "It's the kind of upbeat screwball comedy Hollywood used to do smoothly and well.

• 30:17Bill Simmons?

Takes the curse off the plot's essential sweetness by getting in some nice mean digs at greed, corporate politics, adultery, professional football, and jacks in particular." Interestingly enough, Pauline Kael, who was Warren Beatty's like number one fan for going back to Bonnie and Clyde, and was really upset with this movie, she disliked it. She said it was image conscious celebrity movie making.

• 30:41Bill Simmons?

Said Warren Beatty had turned into a baby kissing politician. And really went after him and it became this really kind of famous Hollywood story, which I, I still don't know what Tarantino's movie critic script was about.

• 30:53Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 30:54Bill Simmons?

But my guess, so what happens is Warren Beatty, instead of like feuding with her, ends up trying to rebuild the relationship with her, hires her, flies her to Hollywood and she becomes this, like a creative executive.

• 31:07Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 31:08Bill Simmons?

But then he buries her and she's basically buried doing nothing for a year. But she's sold out working Hollywood, but then didn't actually get to be involved in movies. And he basically like, that was his way to get back at her.

• 31:18Chris Ryan?

I wonder though if like the

• 31:19Bill Simmons?

I think that might have been the Tarantino movie.

• 31:21Chris Ryan?

That assessment by her leads him to doing Reds though. Because Reds is the complete opposite.

• 31:26Speaker 04

And a very, a very serious period.

• 31:29Bill Simmons?

I think partly, but he, he'd been working on that since like 1970.

• 31:33Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 31:34Bill Simmons?

He was obsessed with John Reed for some reason. But yeah, I think after reading that, I think he's like, I'll show you. And then he like dove hard into Reds. But, um, but yeah, her career was kind of never the same after the Beatty thing. She came back and, you know, her stuff in the eighties that we've talked about, it was just had a little tinge of

• 31:53Chris Ryan?

  Cynicism.

• 31:54Bill Simmons?

Not quite getting it. Cynicism and just kind of like

• 31:56Chris Ryan?

Being behind the times a little bit.

• 31:57Bill Simmons?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, all right, we're gonna take a, we're gonna take a break and then we'll do the categories. Your sausage McMuffin with egg didn't change, your receipt did. The sausage McMuffin with egg extra value meal includes a hash brown and

• 32:49Bill Simmons?

All right, most rewatchable scene. I love the first 15 minutes of this movie.

• 32:52Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 32:53Bill Simmons?

So I don't even want to pull it out, but if I had to narrow it down, I'd go with the birthday celebration when Max comes over and all, just everything that's going on there.

• 33:01Chris Ryan?

  I had it as the.

• 33:02Bill Simmons?

They just seem like they're buddies.

• 33:03Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, it's awesome.

• 33:03Bill Simmons?

They do a great job in five minutes of being like, oh, these guys are fucking boys.

• 33:07Chris Ryan?

And Beatty's in that like, got all the bric-a-brac in that little house up in the canyon. And he's just wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I have the first eight minutes, which is like the title sequence. Basically leading up to the tunnel, to his bike ride.

• 33:21Speaker 04

By the way, interesting thing with the title sequence. We don't come in with any zany music or anything like that. We come in silence. Heaven can wait across the screen, which like, you'd have thought like with the tone of wrestling movie that they had got you ready for it. But no, they want to get you into the world, like a serious guy's life who actually is a serious football player.

• 33:41Bill Simmons?

You know, it, he, they really pour on the football when he's Joe Pendleton. They probably could have gone away with like two passes and some practice, but it's like, no, let's show some things. I really think Beatty was like. I gotta show everybody. I can fucking sling it.

• 33:57Chris Ryan?

He's got his fucking arm angle.

• 33:59Bill Simmons?

Yeah, he's, he's like, let me show you, let me show everybody a few different things I can do. Cause he played in high school and apparently got all these scholarship offers and.

• 34:06Speaker 04

You can watch this movie and tell, cause when I'm watching the film, I'm thinking to myself, okay, who could play this role? Is this a role that like Mark Harmon, who, but I, I guess he wasn't acting yet. It's probably still at UCLA around this time. But like, who else could have played this role, obviously. But when you watch him drop back. He's dropping back, ball up, elbow slotted. He knows that he knows how to throw the football and he wants enough passes for him to actually have some film and some tape. Like I had that written down, like Warren Beatty.

• 34:34Chris Ryan?

  Good cadence.

• 34:35Speaker 04

  He's the man. Yeah, yeah.

• 34:37Bill Simmons?

He has a couple like short touch passes. He wasn't just like, just like throwing deep. He's actually showing, Craig, had you seen this movie before?

• 34:45Speaker 06

  No.

• 34:46Bill Simmons?

What did you think of Warren Beatty just as a quarterback?

• 34:49Speaker 06

I thought he looked great. Honestly, I liked him a little bit more than Burt. I thought he had a great physicality. He's got that natural kind of like works with his hands build to him. He's kind of like a, like a Baker Mayfield type.

• 34:59Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 34:59Chris Ryan?

Oh, Baker Mayfield. I have a different read on him, but like, yeah.

• 35:03Bill Simmons?

  You want to save it?

• 35:04Chris Ryan?

Well, yeah. Do you think Reynolds wasn't naturally a quarterback, right? He was a fullback. Yeah.

• 35:09Bill Simmons?

Yeah, he was more like a Lamar Jackson. He was running QB that flying around making plays. Yeah, this is more of a system Brock Purdy slash Baker Mayfield. Seventy percent completion rate.

• 35:21Speaker 06

He could run though. I mean, the final, the final.

• 35:23Chris Ryan?

That's right. He gets, he has to scramble at the end.

• 35:26Speaker 04

But you know what else is in the movie very subtly? The jargon. Like, they want you to hear him get out that terminology. He's.

• 35:34Chris Ryan?

Oh, he's doing all the Altman stuff with sound where you can hear like the defenders being like pass, pass, pass.

• 35:39Speaker 04

All of that stuff. Like you could tell that at least from him, like he had played some ball before. He's giving out the route combinations to the receivers and they want you to hear all of that and go, what does that mean?

• 35:49Chris Ryan?

Yeah. Also, how awesome is it to be Warren Beatty and you're like, know what I'm going to do? I'm going to quarterback the Rams for an afternoon.

• 35:54Bill Simmons?

Right. Right. Well, they filmed, so they filmed the Super Bowl scene. It's, they have 14 minutes at halftime of preseason game. So he goes out there and all the plays, they're in front of like the full crowd who's all.

• 36:05Speaker 06

Just nuts. Like imagine if they did that today.

• 36:07Chris Ryan?

Right. Well, that's what they did with F1, right? And that's what they did on Days of Thunder where they're like throwing guys in there just to shoot it during an actual event.

• 36:14Speaker 04

I feel like they just did that because you know the guy who plays Reacher now?

• 36:18Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 36:18Speaker 04

There was a picture of him at a Cubs game. And everybody's like, oh my God, Alan Richardson or whatever.

• 36:24Bill Simmons?

  Over there shooting it?

• 36:25Speaker 04

He is definitely Richard because if that motherfucker is just walking around looking that angry, dressed up like Richard the whole time. They're definitely shooting Richard when he's in the, in the stands of the, of the Cubs game. I guess they might, they still do it every now and again.

• 36:38Bill Simmons?

There's one part in that 14 minutes, like one of the plays where he's just, he's calling plays and he's looking both ways and it almost seems like he's changing the plan. He's like red, red, red, red, red, red. And like, he just seems like a quarterback. It's really impressive. It's

• 36:52Chris Ryan?

  That's also

• 36:53Bill Simmons?

  up there with anybody.

• 36:53Chris Ryan?

It's a preseason game against the Chargers was the crowd, right?

• 36:57Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 36:57Chris Ryan?

That's a great crowd for preseason Rams game.

• 37:00Bill Simmons?

Not a lot going on in the late seventies. Anyway, most of our

• 37:04Chris Ryan?

You guys want to go on preseason Rams?

• 37:07Bill Simmons?

The, uh, birthday celebration. I think they do a good job with the car accident.

• 37:11Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 37:11Bill Simmons?

Of showing the tunnel and the car, and the cars are fucking around and he's on his bike and then all of a sudden

• 37:17Chris Ryan?

They do, in this movie, they do very dark stuff in a tonally light way.

• 37:21Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 37:22Chris Ryan?

So getting in a car accident while you're on your bicycle, your wife trying to kill you, you know, chemically poisoning an English town.

• 37:30Bill Simmons?

Yeah. The thing that falls, the thing that falls on the bed. What is that? Like the

• 37:33Chris Ryan?

  The play fixture.

• 37:34Speaker 04

And then he, he goes, he goes, he comes right into the room where they are.

• 37:38Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 37:38Speaker 04

And they're alerted to the fact that he's still alive, but the gag that they did right before they tried to kill him is the same gag that they go back to.

• 37:45Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 37:46Speaker 04

Which makes, which means his character doesn't care, which means you're okay to not kill.

• 37:50Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 37:51Speaker 04

But just move on from it.

• 37:53Bill Simmons?

I like the montage of bodies to jump into.

• 37:56Speaker 04

  Mm hmm.

• 37:57Bill Simmons?

I could have gone with a couple more. They do a race car driver and they have the balance magician guy. I could have done three more.

• 38:04Chris Ryan?

I love all the fake rules.

• 38:05Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I could have just kept going. Could have like a waiter in Hollywood. Like we, we just

• 38:09Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 38:10Bill Simmons?

Porn actor would have been fun.

• 38:12Speaker 04

But they're trying to show him people. Okay. So let's do this. They're trying to show him people that

• 38:16Bill Simmons?

Yeah. So is that a net haven?

• 38:20Speaker 04

See, they, they get on me about it, but you're in the

• 38:22Chris Ryan?

I thought you wanted to be a quarterback. No, nevermind.

• 38:25Speaker 04

  I'm enjoying my

• 38:27Bill Simmons?

Yeah. It's just like, video's not coming for a while.

• 38:30Chris Ryan?

Can you imagine James Mason and Buck Henry's visibly sitting in a porn set?

• 38:39Bill Simmons?

I like uh when he becomes Farnsworth and Diane Cannon freaks out.

• 38:43Chris Ryan?

  When she sees the mouse.

• 38:44Bill Simmons?

  Really good stuff.

• 38:45Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 38:47Bill Simmons?

Joe and Betty in the limo falling for each other a little bit.

• 38:49Chris Ryan?

Yeah, were they like Tommy's chili burger or something?

• 38:51Bill Simmons?

A lot of staring back and forth, a lot of long, long looks. I like the history and the baggage of them too. Alright. These last four, I love all of these. Joe brings Max to the mansion, tells him the secret.

• 39:05Speaker 04

That's the best scene of the movie.

• 39:07Speaker 02

I won't tell a word to anybody, I promise. It'll be our little secret. Our little secret, like what you told me about your older sister and the Coca-Cola salesman? Huh? What about that, hey Max, what about that scar you got on the bottom of your tongue, huh? Or, or, or? How the hell did you? What, what, what happened? What did you do at your uncle's wedding? I don't know, you may, I don't know. Hey, what about the first time I fixed your neck in Pittsburgh? Come here.

• 39:30Bill Simmons?

  And Jack won't believe it.

• 39:31Chris Ryan?

  He fixes his neck, yeah.

• 39:33Bill Simmons?

I'm calling him Jack, uh, until he does those, that thing that happened in Pittsburgh. I always like when those, and we, there's been a few movies like this where I have to convince CR that I'm CR, but I don't look like me. And then I'm like, no, no, remember that time we did Heat in my pool house in 2019? You're like, Bill!

• 39:53Bill Simmons?

  We did Top Gun Maverick.

• 39:55Chris Ryan?

  Murples your leg?

• 39:56Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 39:56Speaker 04

I was thinking about that. What would be the thing that you would say to somebody? To let them know unequivocally that it was you, not like your wife or something like that, like.

• 40:08Bill Simmons?

  Like somebody like Max.

• 40:10Speaker 04

Yeah, like somebody that's in your life like that, like, you know, they had, there was the cracking of the neck.

• 40:15Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 40:15Speaker 04

There was the playing of the flute, like if you're trying to convince me that it's me.

• 40:21Bill Simmons?

I'd be like, I'm on that thread, it's you. I would just talk about the thread.

• 40:26Speaker 04

Right, you'd just talk about the thread?

• 40:27Bill Simmons?

I would just, I'd mention two things from the thread.

• 40:29Chris Ryan?

You could have hacked my phone or something like that. It's gotta be like a personal experience.

• 40:33Speaker 04

Right, like something, what's the thing, what, like what's gonna be the thing?

• 40:37Chris Ryan?

Like I would be like, you took me to your childhood diner in Boston.

• 40:40Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Cabots.

• 40:42Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 40:43Bill Simmons?

You guys. Yeah, I took, I took CR and, I took CR and Sean to Cabots, it was great. Craig didn't wanna come, he was with his in-laws.

• 40:52Speaker 04

  Oh, Craig.

• 40:53Bill Simmons?

  Doing family shit.

• 40:53Chris Ryan?

I don't remember the invite, but.

• 40:54Bill Simmons?

But you were at your in-laws.

• 40:55Chris Ryan?

You had like a kind of steady invite, but you're like, I'm good.

• 40:58Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, I'm good.

• 40:58Chris Ryan?

Well, it was tough. I had to joke a lot.

• 41:00Speaker 04

  Craig, I'll be honest.

• 41:00Chris Ryan?

I have like five family members there.

• 41:02Speaker 04

Craig, I'll be honest with you. We need to do more work. There's absolutely nothing that you and another body could do to convince me that you were you. We don't have any core memories.

• 41:13Chris Ryan?

  Anything I could do?

• 41:14Speaker 04

I don't, we don't have any core memories.

• 41:15Bill Simmons?

You guys need a more personal relationship.

• 41:16Speaker 04

  More core memories, man.

• 41:17Chris Ryan?

  That's probably right.

• 41:18Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 41:18Speaker 04

Yeah, we need more core memories.

• 41:19Bill Simmons?

So that's, so your cutoff line is, Craig, you're somebody I know and that I've interacted with and done some stuff with versus core memory friend?

• 41:28Speaker 04

It has to be a core memory.

• 41:30Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 41:30Speaker 04

It has to be something like, think about what he tells him. He tells him.

• 41:32Chris Ryan?

Do you and I have a core memory?

• 41:34Speaker 04

There are things we could do.

• 41:36Bill Simmons?

  That was quick.

• 41:37Speaker 04

There are things we could do.

• 41:38Bill Simmons?

  Quick.

• 41:40Speaker 04

There are things we could do.

• 41:41Chris Ryan?

I think that thing I said to you earlier today actually could be a core memory.

• 41:44Speaker 04

That could be a core memory.

• 41:45Chris Ryan?

We were, I went on a golf weekend, uh, last weekend and we, we had caddies and I, I reflexively turned to Van and apologized.

• 41:54Speaker 04

It was the weirdest fucking thing. So listen, so listen.

• 41:57Chris Ryan?

  We had to have caddies.

• 41:58Speaker 04

So, so, so look, it's the weirdest fucking thing, bro. It's the weirdest thing.

• 42:01Chris Ryan?

Caddies were in black. It was like, I was like, hey, sorry.

• 42:04Speaker 04

So, so he's telling the story and he goes, we have caddies. And I'm looking at him because I'm listening to the story and he turns around and he goes, yeah, we need to have caddies. I'm like,

• 42:11Chris Ryan?

  I don't give a fuck about that.

• 42:13Bill Simmons?

  There you go.

• 42:14Speaker 04

That's your core memory now. Remember the time you fucked up the caddies on some weird bag of van shit?

• 42:18Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 42:19Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 42:21Bill Simmons?

Sarah and I have seen a few movies together. I can't go to any of those.

• 42:24Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 42:25Bill Simmons?

Did we see The Grey together?

• 42:26Chris Ryan?

Well, we saw that. We saw, I think, I think going to see Black Hat, just the three of us at the Olympic UA.

• 42:32Bill Simmons?

Being the only two people in the theater that like Black Hat. Um, anyway, that goes Joe and Max and convinces him it's Joe.

• 42:40Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 42:41Bill Simmons?

We go right to the football warm-up montage with the servants, which I honestly could have gone eight more minutes with. Gorden runs into the bush. The guy's trying to catch the passes and then there's a couple of shots of Warden and, and Beatty just, just kind of flinging it.

• 42:57Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 42:57Bill Simmons?

Warden looks pretty good. Like I feel like Warden might've had some football background.

• 43:01Chris Ryan?

I was gonna save this for later, but I have to ask you this now.

• 43:04Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 43:04Chris Ryan?

Are you kind of bummed out that professional sports franchises have reached the price point that they're at because otherwise you could get into a Farnsworth kind of situation?

• 43:12Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah.

• 43:13Speaker 04

  I was thinking about that.

• 43:13Bill Simmons?

  Sixty-seven million for the Rams?

• 43:15Speaker 04

  Yeah, you got that.

• 43:17Bill Simmons?

  And then he apparently overpaid?

• 43:20Speaker 04

Sounds great. It was only supposed to be nineteen. Yeah. That's, come on.

• 43:24Bill Simmons?

But you want to live in a world where a guy could buy the Rams and make himself the quarterback, and it wouldn't cause an absolute panic on social media.

• 43:31Speaker 04

  I have a, I have a list later on.

• 43:34Speaker 06

Who is the richest man that could theoretically actually start for a football team right now?

• 43:38Speaker 04

I have a list of top five owners I want to see.

• 43:40Bill Simmons?

  Start for a football team?

• 43:41Speaker 06

Like if a rich guy bought a football team, it was like, I want to be the quarterback.

• 43:44Chris Ryan?

Yeah, like if Sam Altman bought the Warriors, could he start at point guard?

• 43:47Speaker 06

Like Mark Zuckerberg, not Mark Zuckerberg.

• 43:49Speaker 04

So I just go ahead and do it now. Number one, I got Jerry Jones. What? I want to put, I want to see Jerry.

• 43:54Bill Simmons?

  Like forty years ago.

• 43:55Speaker 04

No, now. Playing football? I want to see Jerry play offensive line for Arkansas. Okay, he was the captain. I want to see Jerry Jones protect that Jimmy Dolan, uh, James Dolan, we'll call him Jimmy. He's playing, you and him get along. And like, I'd have him, uh, Brunson is on the bench. I want Jimmy running the point. Five ten. Also, his band, JD and the Straight Shot, they could play at halftime. Magic Johnson, owner in two different sports.

• 44:24Bill Simmons?

  Magic Johnson could do it.

• 44:25Speaker 04

So either I want to see Magic play, hit cleanup for the Dodgers, or I want to see Magic as a pass catching tight end for the commanders.

• 44:33Bill Simmons?

No, you, see, you have that wrong.

• 44:34Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 44:35Bill Simmons?

You want to put him on the field goal block team in the middle, because he's six nine.

• 44:39Speaker 04

  Six nine.

• 44:39Bill Simmons?

He just jumps for the field goal.

• 44:41Speaker 04

  Right.

• 44:41Bill Simmons?

Comes in for special plays. That actually would make sense.

• 44:44Chris Ryan?

You think all this rumor mongering about breaking up the Celtics is coming direct from Chisholm? Because he's going to install himself?

• 44:50Bill Simmons?

  Because he wants to play.

• 44:50Speaker 04

He wants to play. Last one.

• 44:52Bill Simmons?

Why'd you have to bring up the Celtics? I was having such a good time.

• 44:55Speaker 04

  Donald Sterling.

• 44:56Bill Simmons?

  Hmm. Oh my god.

• 44:57Speaker 04

Power forward, uh, for the, for the Clippers. I want to see him play against Isaiah Stewart and Draymond Green in a game with no fouls or flavors, where every point he scores, it costs them fifty thousand dollars.

• 45:11Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 45:13Speaker 04

I just want to see physical basketball for him. That's it. That's my list of owners.

• 45:17Bill Simmons?

Well, there was a Celtics minority owner, Jim Pallada, who was like the number three guy when Wicks Group bought the team.

• 45:23Chris Ryan?

Was he, was he, didn't he own Roma for a while?

• 45:25Bill Simmons?

He ended up, but he sold his stake to buy Roma.

• 45:27Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 45:28Bill Simmons?

But he played all the time. And the joke was always if he got the team from Wick, he would do the, he would do the one beady and just all of a sudden he'd be on the team. But I think they have a lot of rules against this.

• 45:39Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 45:40Bill Simmons?

Because, because basically, yeah, Jordan, LeBron, if he got a team, could he make himself, could he put himself on it? Like, no, they have rules that you can't.

• 45:50Speaker 04

Yeah, you can't call your own.

• 45:51Chris Ryan?

But this is exactly, you're right, though, where it's like, I will kind of want to live in a world where LeBron owns a team and then is like at the playoffs is like, you know what? I'm fucking coming back.

• 45:59Speaker 04

  I would love that.

• 46:00Chris Ryan?

  That would be awesome.

• 46:02Bill Simmons?

News flash. Well, I remember when Cousy was coaching the Cincinnati Royals a million years ago, in like the 1970, and they had some injuries and he just made himself a player coach for the last seven games of the year. And they were like, okay, Bob Cousy's not going to play. And that was it. It just was the way it happened.

• 46:20Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:20Bill Simmons?

I'm not against that. I mean, that would be fun if, if NBA coaches were just like, yeah, we're a little short today. I'm suiting up.

• 46:26Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 46:26Bill Simmons?

  Like Missoula?

• 46:27Chris Ryan?

Missoula was just like, I'm getting out here.

• 46:29Bill Simmons?

  Missoula could do it, actually.

• 46:30Chris Ryan?

  I'm sure he could.

• 46:31Speaker 04

You think Missoula could play like meaningful minutes?

• 46:34Bill Simmons?

He'd be the 14th man on a team, like for break case and emergency.

• 46:38Speaker 04

Okay, what about Jason Kidd? Too old to watch?

• 46:41Bill Simmons?

  Probably too old.

• 46:42Chris Ryan?

  Reddick could probably play.

• 46:43Speaker 04

So Reddick, easy. Reddick could definitely do it.

• 46:44Bill Simmons?

Yeah, but Reddick would actually put himself in.

• 46:46Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 46:46Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 46:47Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:48Bill Simmons?

He'd be like, we need spacing.

• 46:50Chris Ryan?

  They probably could use it.

• 46:51Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 46:52Speaker 04

I'm gonna go in the corner. Chauncey Billups, maybe? Because it looks like he could still give you some minutes.

• 46:55Chris Ryan?

We got distracted, but you had the training montage and football practice.

• 46:59Bill Simmons?

Well, the montage of, first of all, one of the best backyards. I mean, just enough room where you could really have a great touch football game.

• 47:05Speaker 04

You were talking, you were talking about the house.

• 47:07Chris Ryan?

Flight betrayal, because it's in Northern California.

• 47:09Bill Simmons?

  Well, yeah.

• 47:09Chris Ryan?

  Interesting.

• 47:10Bill Simmons?

Um, and then fake Leo's first Rams practice when Beatty comes in.

• 47:14Chris Ryan?

  I love that.

• 47:15Bill Simmons?

Lights it up. Mr. Farnsworth, you play any college football?

• 47:18Chris Ryan?

I played some polo. What does Broden say? Like disregard any of his racial statements?

• 47:24Speaker 03

Well, very, very nice. Very, very impressive. I'm Tony Abbott, Mr. Farnsworth's personal, private executive secretary. Very nice. Very, very nice. Don't let any of Mr. Farnsworth's racial statements offend you, for God's sake.

• 47:48Speaker 04

  You're disregarding.

• 47:49Chris Ryan?

  For god's sake.

• 47:50Speaker 04

He's trying to, man. Grodin is fucking cooking.

• 47:54Chris Ryan?

  He's really is.

• 47:55Bill Simmons?

Grodin's out of his mind in this movie.

• 47:57Speaker 04

Did Grodin ever get his moment where we all appreciated him?

• 48:01Bill Simmons?

  Midnight Run.

• 48:02Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 48:02Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 48:02Bill Simmons?

Midnight Run was his, that was his Oscar.

• 48:05Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 48:05Bill Simmons?

But yeah, cause he's in foul play too, which is, uh, I think it's same year.

• 48:10Chris Ryan?

  Chevy Chase, yeah.

• 48:11Speaker 04

He didn't seem like old times.

• 48:13Bill Simmons?

Not, not foul play, seems like old times.

• 48:14Speaker 04

  Okay, yeah, yeah.

• 48:15Bill Simmons?

  That's 1980.

• 48:16Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 48:16Bill Simmons?

He's amazing in Seems Like Old Times.

• 48:18Speaker 04

Amazing in Seems Like Old Times.

• 48:19Bill Simmons?

  I love that movie.

• 48:20Speaker 04

Yeah. Have you done that one yet?

• 48:22Bill Simmons?

No, I don't know if, I, I don't know, I'd have to watch it again because as a kid I loved it.

• 48:26Speaker 04

  Oh, it is phenomenal.

• 48:27Bill Simmons?

  I don't know if it's held up.

• 48:28Speaker 04

It, it, it definitely holds up.

• 48:30Bill Simmons?

  Throwing a hundred thousand.

• 48:30Speaker 04

You know, not to get too far off the movie, but, but you know why the movie holds up? To me, that's the, that's, obviously people are gonna say Fletch and other, and you know, obviously, uh, the vacation, but Chevy is so perfect in that role as the good looking, tall.

• 48:48Bill Simmons?

But he's like a fuck up first husband guy.

• 48:50Speaker 04

Yeah, it is, but like, he's perfectly cast in that opposite her too.

• 48:53Bill Simmons?

Some good dogs in that movie, good dog movie.

• 48:56Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm. Great.

• 48:57Bill Simmons?

Good slapstick, it's very like Three's Company era where like misunderstandings.

• 49:02Chris Ryan?

Just had a quick vision of the future of us doing the Brandy Booth month.

• 49:06Bill Simmons?

  Just dogs.

• 49:06Chris Ryan?

  Great dog movies.

• 49:07Bill Simmons?

Yeah, Chevy Chase month. Uh, that Rams practice is really fun. So Joe says goodbye to Betty and then gets shot.

• 49:15Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm.

• 49:16Bill Simmons?

It's like, somebody's gonna come back someday. Maybe, maybe they're even the quarterback. Which is just insane.

• 49:22Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 49:23Bill Simmons?

Um. And then he gets shot and falls in the well. And then the last one, he wins the, uh, wins the Super Bowl, but then. Um, the movie gets really sad.

• 49:32Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 49:33Bill Simmons?

  Did you cry?

• 49:34Speaker 04

  So, the-

• 49:35Bill Simmons?

You've been known to cry during sad movies.

• 49:37Speaker 04

Oh yeah, I cried. So, I didn't cry during this one, but I, but I cry in movies. The scene where Joe is trying to appeal to him.

• 49:44Bill Simmons?

Where Max is trying to appeal to him.

• 49:46Speaker 04

Where Max is trying to appeal to him, is legitimately sad.

• 49:48Bill Simmons?

  It's so heartbreaking.

• 49:50Speaker 04

It's like legitimately, the jubilation that you feel when, um, he's able to convince him that he actually is his friend, is then completely disintegrated by the fact that he then has to lose that friend again.

• 50:05Bill Simmons?

  Yes.

• 50:06Speaker 02

  Hey.

• 50:09Speaker 02

A little fresh air wouldn't hurt.

• 50:14Speaker 02

Hey, look, just do me one favor. Uh, look at me. Just, just, just look at me.

• 50:28Speaker 04

And like to me, the acting that's done in the movie, so much of it is on that character to be like, oh my God, I got my buddy back. Let's get him to the Super Bowl. He wins the Super Bowl. They actually have a moment where, hey, it's you again, and then he's gone again forever. Dies right in front of his eyes, basically, and he's, the only thing he has left is the saxophone.

• 50:46Bill Simmons?

It's said in the Biscan book about Beatty that, um, that scene where he kinda doesn't recognize him and it's a little cold, that for people in Beatty's life, that's kinda what he was like, where you were, you'd be his best friend.

• 50:58Chris Ryan?

And then like the next day.

• 50:59Bill Simmons?

Yeah. And then as soon as he kinda got what he got from you, he'd move on. And the next thing, and then all of a sudden you were like Jack Warden in that scene.

• 51:06Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 51:06Bill Simmons?

Like, oh man, I guess we're not friends anymore.

• 51:08Chris Ryan?

And then the bittersweet scene with Christie.

• 51:11Bill Simmons?

So, yeah. I think that's my most rewatchable scene. I think the last 10 minutes of this movie are most rewatchable for me. I really like the Christie. I love when, when it goes dark. And he's like, no, no, whatever he says, like, it's okay.

• 51:26Chris Ryan?

Yeah, they're just closing the place down, yeah.

• 51:28Bill Simmons?

  And then she's like-

• 51:30Chris Ryan?

  You're the quarterback.

• 51:32Bill Simmons?

And just like how she plays that.

• 51:33Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 51:34Bill Simmons?

Really good. I'm totally in. I believe it.

• 51:36Speaker 04

So my most rewatchable scene is actually the scene where he's convincing him.

• 51:41Bill Simmons?

  Convincing Max.

• 51:42Speaker 04

Yeah, that's like the just delightful scene, but I also want to give some love to the boardroom.

• 51:46Bill Simmons?

  It's amazing.

• 51:47Speaker 04

The boardroom is just so much fun.

• 51:51Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 51:51Speaker 04

He's he's functionally the most ignorant guy in the room, but then he's actually the smartest guy in the room in human compassion.

• 52:00Bill Simmons?

Would you pay a penny to save a fish that thinks?

• 52:02Speaker 04

  Right.

• 52:02Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 52:03Speaker 04

So it's like all of that stuff. Just fantastic.

• 52:06Bill Simmons?

He's got very, very, very good comic timing, which shampoo he also had that I don't feel like he used in enough movies.

• 52:12Chris Ryan?

Yeah, and also had some real hitters like helping on set and and writing the script, like Elaine May and Buck Henry.

• 52:19Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 52:19Chris Ryan?

Are two of the funniest screenwriters that have ever existed.

• 52:21Bill Simmons?

  What's your most rewatchable?

• 52:23Chris Ryan?

Uh, I'd probably go training montage football practice.

• 52:26Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 52:27Chris Ryan?

I just go back and back and like watching Grodin watch him get sacked.

• 52:34Bill Simmons?

What's the most 1977 thing about this movie? What do you have?

• 52:37Chris Ryan?

Uh, professional athletes being closer to normal people than they are now. So like the idea of like Joe living alone in a pretty modest house and not having anybody over for his birthday and just hanging out like.

• 52:50Bill Simmons?

  Now he'd be like, yo, I'm 35.

• 52:54Speaker 04

Yeah, it just means he's that's he it means nothing that he's the quarterback.

• 52:58Chris Ryan?

But like stockbrokers got paid more than those guys, you know, like there you would be like famous, but you might not get paid that much. And it's just like that opening sequence where you're like, this guy's just jogging like a normal person and wearing jeans.

• 53:10Bill Simmons?

Yeah, there just weren't a lot of famous, rich athletes back then.

• 53:13Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 53:13Bill Simmons?

I remember Inside Sports, it's like 1980 or 81, Nolan Ryan became like the first million dollar baseball player. And it was like him on the cover. It's like athletes are making a million dollars. This sport's going crazy.

• 53:27Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 53:28Bill Simmons?

This is like three years before that.

• 53:29Chris Ryan?

Yeah, so like in the Reggie Jackson.

• 53:31Bill Simmons?

  That was another one.

• 53:32Chris Ryan?

  Era.

• 53:33Bill Simmons?

  Oh, my God, Reggie Jackson.

• 53:34Chris Ryan?

But there was like half a dozen guys who kind of reached that level and then like you could be starting quarterback for the Rams or the backup quarterback for the Rams and you were pretty anonymous, right?

• 53:42Speaker 04

You could make an argument that if this movie were remade, that it wouldn't be, his motivation wouldn't be to start the Super Bowl.

• 53:49Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 53:50Speaker 04

His motivation would be monetary in some way. It would be like.

• 53:53Bill Simmons?

  To own the Rams.

• 53:54Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 53:55Bill Simmons?

  There's no football game.

• 53:56Speaker 04

You know what I mean? The motivation would be like, I need to continue to play because I need to get this much money or get this thing.

• 54:02Bill Simmons?

I need to build a new football stadium in LA.

• 54:06Bill Simmons?

  What's your most 1977 thing?

• 54:07Speaker 04

  It's that.

• 54:08Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 54:08Speaker 04

No, that's what I'm saying. The fact that he was like a, that I was, I wrote that like playing, being a quarterback for the Rams didn't mean anything.

• 54:15Bill Simmons?

All right, I have some runners ups.

• 54:16Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 54:17Bill Simmons?

The, the hairdos for the females in this movie, very distinct, 19, that kind of perm-y.

• 54:23Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 54:23Bill Simmons?

Big body era, it was the little Farrah Fawcett residue.

• 54:27Chris Ryan?

  A lot of feathered.

• 54:28Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 54:29Chris Ryan?

  That's uncannon.

• 54:30Bill Simmons?

The houses, the, the, this mansion that's supposedly like the most decadent great mansion.

• 54:35Chris Ryan?

Is it the Folio House? Is that what it is?

• 54:37Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I have some stuff on it later.

• 54:39Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 54:39Bill Simmons?

Though, the wallpaper and some of the stuff is really gaudy, like it would never, they would, the house would be totally different now. Young Dick Emberg.

• 54:48Bill Simmons?

Very 1977. Uh, concussion protocol. I'm pretty sure Tom Jarrett's not just running back on the field after he's been carried off on a stretcher for five minutes. And then, uh.

• 54:58Speaker 04

So he was, because he was, let's make it short. He was dead.

• 55:01Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, we think he's dead.

• 55:02Bill Simmons?

  Independent neurologist.

• 55:04Speaker 04

  He was, he was.

• 55:04Chris Ryan?

  There's about to die.

• 55:05Bill Simmons?

  No intent.

• 55:06Speaker 04

  Right.

• 55:07Bill Simmons?

But then the number one for me is the Rams costing 17 million but having a book value of 19.

• 55:12Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 55:13Bill Simmons?

As a professional NFL team, these teams are worth $7 billion now.

• 55:16Chris Ryan?

  I know. Yeah.

• 55:18Speaker 04

I actually had that in What's Aged the Worst and I guess it could have aged the worst or the best depending on how you look at it. 19 million bucks.

• 55:24Bill Simmons?

I have, uh, two special awards. The Sasha Jenkins Award for actor you can't believe didn't become a bigger star. You could go Grodin here too, but I thought Diane Cannon was really just, I just liked her. And I don't, she, she just was kind of in roles like this was her peak, but not.

• 55:40Chris Ryan?

  If you're ready.

• 55:41Bill Simmons?

  That Goldie Hawn.

• 55:42Chris Ryan?

If you're ready for What's Aged the Best, I, I am about to open a Diane Cannon six pack.

• 55:45Bill Simmons?

  Okay, we'll see.

• 55:48Bill Simmons?

The Amanda Dobbins Award for Best Piece of Real Estate. Which also goes to the Dennis Benihana Award for Seen Still in Location, Leo Farnsworth's house.

• 55:56Chris Ryan?

Although you could make the argument that Joe's place in Topanga probably gave him the most value.

• 56:01Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Uh, it was called the Filoli Mansion. It's a historical museum now.

• 56:07Bill Simmons?

Craig, too bad you got married, because you could have gotten married there for prices starting at seventy-five thousand.

• 56:11Chris Ryan?

  Oh, nice.

• 56:12Bill Simmons?

  It's located in Woodside, California.

• 56:14Chris Ryan?

Too bad you got married. And you also didn't get to go to Bill's Holiday.

• 56:17Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Oh, yeah, you missed out on two things so far. Um, it's between San Francisco and San Jose. It is also seen in the opening credits of Dynasty?

• 56:27Speaker 04

  Oh, Carrington's.

• 56:29Bill Simmons?

  And it's

• 56:31Bill Simmons?

the home of a movie we've already done on the rewatch.

• 56:34Chris Ryan?

Is it the Basic Instinct House? No.

• 56:36Bill Simmons?

It's Michael Douglas's home in the game.

• 56:38Chris Ryan?

Oh, I had a feeling Michael Douglas would do that, yeah.

• 56:42Speaker 04

  Oh, we talked about that.

• 56:43Chris Ryan?

Also, pretty much the heir to the Warren Beatty style of like.

• 56:47Bill Simmons?

But never could have been the quarterback, right? That's the difference. I don't feel like he could have pulled it up.

• 56:51Chris Ryan?

So he, China Syndrome, Mike? You don't think he could have tossed it around a little bit?

• 56:55Speaker 04

He is the darker version of Warren Beatty. Warren Beatty is the lighter version of him. Did he ever play a role like this? That was kind of like this delightful? You always had that little thing with him.

• 57:04Bill Simmons?

Yeah, Warren Beatty never shows the Basic Instinct shot of his butt with the balls hanging up between his butt cheeks. He's never doing that. Too classy. Too classy.

• 57:14Speaker 04

Almost to the point that in Bugsy.

• 57:17Chris Ryan?

  Nobody says butt cheeks anymore.

• 57:20Bill Simmons?

  Well, it's just iconic, like.

• 57:22Chris Ryan?

That one scene in Dick Tracy, yeah.

• 57:23Bill Simmons?

We can kind of see your balls in this shot. We might have to do this again. Leave it in.

• 57:28Bill Simmons?

  It's what I wanted.

• 57:31Bill Simmons?

  What's age the best?

• 57:34Bill Simmons?

I'll start, I'll start us off. According to the movie, Joe Pendleton was supposed to live until ten seventeen AM on March twentieth, two thousand twenty-five.

• 57:43Speaker 04

  We just passed it.

• 57:44Bill Simmons?

He still would have been alive.

• 57:45Chris Ryan?

  No, he'd be dead.

• 57:46Bill Simmons?

  He'd be dead.

• 57:47Chris Ryan?

  But it's May.

• 57:48Bill Simmons?

No, and this year, and you would have made it to twenty twenty-five, he would have been like eighty-five year old, probably CTE and dementia from playing football for nine years.

• 57:55Chris Ryan?

And then five people on Twitter would be like, Joe Pendleton was a bucket.

• 58:00Chris Ryan?

  Joe Pendleton was a problem.

• 58:04Bill Simmons?

  What do you have?

• 58:05Chris Ryan?

I have a six pack of Cannon.

• 58:06Bill Simmons?

  Let's go.

• 58:07Chris Ryan?

Diane Cannon wanting a drink. Diane Cannon's outfits. Diane Cannon's eye acting whenever Charles Gordon covers her mouth. Diane Cannon screaming. Diane Cannon's off screen body count, including Johnny Carson, Armon DeSante and Cary Grant. And Diane Cannon's still cranking out Lakers home games.

• 58:26Bill Simmons?

Going for it. You left out Diane Cannon as her adultery boyfriend. What is Charles Gordon, her paramour, whatever word you want to use.

• 58:36Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 58:37Bill Simmons?

Guns down her ex husband and she's just kind of hanging out doing her hair. Just completely unfazed.

• 58:43Speaker 04

The reality of this relationship inside the movie is completely fucking bonkers. They are like fucking inside of the house. They're living together inside of the house while she's married to somebody.

• 58:56Chris Ryan?

  They're so fucking funny together.

• 58:58Speaker 04

  It's hysterical.

• 58:58Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it's like its own movie, basically.

• 59:00Speaker 04

  It's its own movie.

• 59:01Chris Ryan?

Him in full pajamas with her, like it's just so funny.

• 59:05Bill Simmons?

  Him hiding in the curtain.

• 59:06Speaker 04

Kind of reminds me of like the side relationship in Who's Harry Crumb?

• 59:09Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 59:10Speaker 04

  Remember that movie?

• 59:10Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Another Woods age the best, Vincent Cardenius, a police sergeant. We were two away from Gardena month instead of big ass seventies month.

• 59:18Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I mean, what a run for him.

• 59:20Bill Simmons?

  I should have reconfigured this.

• 59:22Chris Ryan?

Gardena now officially has more movies on rewatchables than Warren Beatty.

• 59:27Bill Simmons?

Wow, nuts. The score of this movie I had, I think is just fantastic.

• 59:32Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, Dave Grusson.

• 59:33Bill Simmons?

The music, this is almost like Shawshank where it's just like fun to hang out with the music. And when it gets like the sad version and like the happy peppy version and it gets sad again. Hey Van, how about for Woods age the best, an overtime Super Bowl?

• 59:49Bill Simmons?

Which didn't happen until Pat's Falcons.

• 59:51Speaker 04

  Right.

• 59:52Bill Simmons?

Right? Was that the first one?

• 59:53Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 59:55Speaker 04

Shout out to everybody in Atlanta.

• 59:56Bill Simmons?

Seemed like a crazy idea at the time. Was this Super Bowl to go into overtime?

• 1:00:00Chris Ryan?

And is this sudden death overtime?

• 1:00:02Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Yeah. Um, so Steelers Rams Super Bowl filmed at a Chargers Rams preseason game, September 1st, 1977. And a year and a half after the movie came out, January 1980, Rams Steelers, Super Bowl in Los Angeles. Wow, that's fucking weird.

• 1:00:21Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:22Bill Simmons?

Not in the Coliseum, in the Rose Bowl, but.

• 1:00:23Speaker 06

  Hmm.

• 1:00:24Bill Simmons?

You have any other, what's age the best?

• 1:00:25Speaker 04

Uh, the quarter, the popularity of backup quarterbacks. This team.

• 1:00:30Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:00:31Speaker 04

This team is in a Super Bowl run.

• 1:00:33Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:34Speaker 04

  And they're changing quarterbacks.

• 1:00:35Chris Ryan?

  Constantly.

• 1:00:36Speaker 04

Like going back and forth, uh, in a Super Bowl run. Uh, another one.

• 1:00:41Bill Simmons?

Do you know why that is? Cause quarterbacks were less essential back then because they used to get the absolute fucking shit kicked out of them. And they threw a ton of interceptions and there were really only a few good ones. You go back and look at the stats from 1978, guys will have like 26 picks in a season.

• 1:00:55Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:56Bill Simmons?

They were basically like, you just had to not get killed when you were the quarterback.

• 1:00:59Speaker 04

Oh, we get to what's age the worst, I'm gonna talk about his fucking stat line.

• 1:01:03Bill Simmons?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:01:03Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:03Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:01:04Chris Ryan?

I was, the only other thing I had for what's age the best is this movie is one of the first things in culture that I can remember, like being like California new age wellness. Like drinking whey liver shakes and alfalfa sprouts and the kind of weird like out, like California way of, of, of health, which obviously.

• 1:01:24Bill Simmons?

I have that in what's age the worst because.

• 1:01:26Chris Ryan?

  Really?

• 1:01:26Bill Simmons?

I think in 2025, if somebody did a liver and whey drink, whatever the fuck that was, I'd be.

• 1:01:31Chris Ryan?

Don't fucking tell Craig about a good time right here.

• 1:01:35Speaker 06

You should see my TikTok algorithm.

• 1:01:36Speaker 04

  Dog, no.

• 1:01:38Bill Simmons?

  That looks disgusting.

• 1:01:39Chris Ryan?

People are eating like livers, like raw livers.

• 1:01:42Speaker 04

This is the golden age of that type of shit.

• 1:01:44Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:45Bill Simmons?

  Of liver?

• 1:01:46Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, guys are.

• 1:01:47Bill Simmons?

I don't know anyone who would eat.

• 1:01:48Speaker 04

You ever heard of the Liver King?

• 1:01:49Chris Ryan?

  Craig.

• 1:01:50Speaker 06

Yeah, Liver King was on a bunch of steroids.

• 1:01:51Speaker 04

He was on a bunch of steroids.

• 1:01:52Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:54Speaker 06

But yeah, people are eating animal organs.

• 1:01:56Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:01:57Speaker 06

Raw meat, everything like that. I didn't even know whey protein powder was a thing in nineteen seventy seven.

• 1:02:02Chris Ryan?

And he had like a bunch of mushroom fungus?

• 1:02:04Speaker 06

  I didn't realize that.

• 1:02:04Speaker 04

To the point to where it's already, I would have thought that they maybe they had whey protein that you could, but he's, it's like being so.

• 1:02:11Speaker 06

I mean, it looks like now.

• 1:02:12Bill Simmons?

They had steroids in the late seventies too.

• 1:02:14Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:02:14Bill Simmons?

We didn't know about it, but they had a lot of them. Yeah. Just saying.

• 1:02:18Speaker 04

  Uh, environmental causes.

• 1:02:20Bill Simmons?

  Hmm.

• 1:02:21Speaker 06

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:02:22Speaker 04

This movie is like literally one of the first movies that I could remember that was talking about this stuff is in what you're doing, we're being displaced, the whole nine, they're on environmental costs.

• 1:02:32Speaker 06

Yeah, Leo Farnsworth goes woke at the end.

• 1:02:34Speaker 04

  Goes woke.

• 1:02:35Bill Simmons?

I had for what stage the best Leo Farnsworth being a fucking asshole rich guy, because those guys are back.

• 1:02:41Speaker 04

Like literally an asshole rich guy, an asshole rich guy who.

• 1:02:46Speaker 06

  Who's that? I didn't deserve that.

• 1:02:50Chris Ryan?

I saw that out of the.

• 1:02:50Speaker 06

  I'm saying billionaire guys.

• 1:02:54Speaker 04

  Come on.

• 1:02:56Speaker 04

But he's like, he's such an asshole that he's walking around in a sailor outfit.

• 1:03:02Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I was gonna say, all of his outfits when he first has to be Leo and he's like, do I play polo? And they're like, not really. Do I like boats? Nah.

• 1:03:12Speaker 04

He's just like a super fucking pretender.

• 1:03:15Bill Simmons?

Leo Farnsworth, interesting choice for a name.

• 1:03:18Chris Ryan?

Do you think that is the Chas Rockwell award winner?

• 1:03:22Bill Simmons?

  Not really. I don't.

• 1:03:24Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:03:26Bill Simmons?

I think it's a weird rich guy name.

• 1:03:28Chris Ryan?

  Farnsworth?

• 1:03:29Bill Simmons?

  Leo Farnsworth?

• 1:03:31Chris Ryan?

  I, you know.

• 1:03:32Bill Simmons?

I would have gone with like Chadwick Farnsworth or, I don't know. It doesn't sound like rich and douche enough to me.

• 1:03:41Bill Simmons?

I guess you guys didn't fixate on it. The big burger award for best use of food and drink is obviously the uh liver and way shake. What'd you have for great shot order?

• 1:03:50Chris Ryan?

Buck Henry and Warren Beatty walking through the clouds at the beginning of the way station scene and just like him cat trying to catch up to him. That whole sequence is just great. It must have really blown some minds in the late seventies. Be like, oh, that's heaven.

• 1:04:03Speaker 04

  The cool looking plane.

• 1:04:04Chris Ryan?

Yeah, or the, you know, the airplane terminal for heaven.

• 1:04:07Bill Simmons?

I was gonna do this later. I'll do it now. Um, given movies, it's shaped everything. I think about everything. I think heaven is like heaven can wait and I think hell is like ghost.

• 1:04:16Chris Ryan?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:04:17Speaker 04

  Oh, like with the.

• 1:04:18Bill Simmons?

When the shadows come up and pull you down. I think, I think that's probably what it's like.

• 1:04:22Chris Ryan?

So when your car dies while going seventy five miles per hour on the ten and you go.

• 1:04:28Speaker 04

  Fuck.

• 1:04:28Chris Ryan?

  Go quickly.

• 1:04:29Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 1:04:30Chris Ryan?

You're gonna go to like an airplane.

• 1:04:32Bill Simmons?

I'm hoping to see the clouds and not see those shadows coming up out of the sewers.

• 1:04:36Speaker 04

  They're, they're here for you.

• 1:04:38Bill Simmons?

  Tough one. Poor Willie Lopez.

• 1:04:39Chris Ryan?

And then you'll try to find a young blogger to throw your soul in.

• 1:04:45Bill Simmons?

No, I'd be like AI Tik Tok. Like this guy's the rage right now.

• 1:04:49Speaker 04

If you're so funny, Jomi, trying to convince me that he's Bill.

• 1:04:53Bill Simmons?

  I know.

• 1:04:55Chris Ryan?

  No, I love the selfie.

• 1:04:56Speaker 04

  Pew pew.

• 1:04:56Chris Ryan?

  Pew pew.

• 1:05:00Bill Simmons?

I start rattling off like Andor stuff.

• 1:05:04Speaker 04

Oh, that's how I would fucking know.

• 1:05:05Bill Simmons?

Yeah, if I knew all this.

• 1:05:06Speaker 04

If you knew all of that stuff, all of the, Van, Van, Van, I'll tell you right now, Galactus, Bill would not know this.

• 1:05:13Chris Ryan?

Mon Mothma Moose moving her money around.

• 1:05:15Speaker 04

That was like, nah, it's you, Joe.

• 1:05:17Bill Simmons?

Chesswack Robb Lander's best character name?

• 1:05:19Chris Ryan?

  I have Max Corkle.

• 1:05:21Bill Simmons?

I had Joe Pendleton. I thought that was a strong QB name. What'd you have, man?

• 1:05:25Speaker 04

Um, what was the character we just did? I think I have one for that. Oh, I wanted to say something real quick. My, my favorite shot is, I think it's a weirdly moving shot when they go black out of the tunnel and then they come out to the.

• 1:05:37Chris Ryan?

  Oh, it's awesome. That's a great.

• 1:05:39Speaker 04

Of light. Cause it's like literally everything goes black. He's gone, but then it's like, no, he's still here and it comes out and he's right there. It's an awesome shot.

• 1:05:47Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:47Speaker 04

I love that every time I see the movie.

• 1:05:49Bill Simmons?

Let's take a break and then we gotta see our flex category.

• 1:06:38Chris Ryan?

All right, CR flex, go. You know, I'm gonna go Mallory Rubin did this movie need a better sex scene? Because it is kind of weird that Diane Cat Cannon is 10. Is the proto Dana Wheeler Nicholson in this movie.

• 1:06:53Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:55Chris Ryan?

And is leaving Warren Beatty. For Charles Grodin, who seems to be a never nude. And is in full silk pajamas in bed with her. And I just feel like we could have had one scene of like Grodin, Grodin and her going after it.

• 1:07:08Bill Simmons?

I think this movie is really PG.

• 1:07:11Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:11Bill Simmons?

Cause even when Warren Beatty and Julie Christie kiss, it's not like they're like making out.

• 1:07:16Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:16Bill Simmons?

  They're like very.

• 1:07:17Chris Ryan?

  What is it actually rated?

• 1:07:18Bill Simmons?

  PG.

• 1:07:19Chris Ryan?

  Oh.

• 1:07:19Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:19Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 1:07:21Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah, this isn't a rated R. I don't think there's a swear word in this.

• 1:07:24Speaker 04

But like, you know, you thought maybe a PG 13, they're trying to kill the guy the whole time. He gets shot with a gun. Like, you know what I mean? Like, you know, you would have thought.

• 1:07:30Bill Simmons?

  Didn't have PG 13 till like 84, 85.

• 1:07:32Speaker 04

That's right. It didn't even exist.

• 1:07:34Chris Ryan?

But I think that this movie was crying out for a sex scene.

• 1:07:38Bill Simmons?

Listen, you don't have to sell me. Come on.

• 1:07:39Chris Ryan?

And I was just surprised Beatty, it's just like going against his, his better instincts.

• 1:07:43Bill Simmons?

Maybe he didn't trust himself in sex scenes. Just got carried away. Butch's girlfriend award for the weak link of the film. What do you have, Van?

• 1:07:54Speaker 04

  I couldn't think of one.

• 1:07:55Bill Simmons?

  I have one.

• 1:07:56Speaker 04

I really couldn't think of one, like.

• 1:07:57Bill Simmons?

Two Rams quarterbacks die in the span of three months? What are the fucking odds?

• 1:08:02Speaker 04

  Wait, that's not a character, that's a nit, right?

• 1:08:05Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it's a weak link of the movie. The two quarterbacks, one dies in a bike accident, the other dies in the field.

• 1:08:11Speaker 04

  Jared doesn't die.

• 1:08:12Bill Simmons?

  He's about to die.

• 1:08:13Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:13Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:14Chris Ryan?

  But nobody knows that.

• 1:08:14Bill Simmons?

Runs back on the field, Tua style, yeah. If one of those things happened, it would be the biggest thing of the year.

• 1:08:21Speaker 04

What if we're not watching Tua?

• 1:08:23Chris Ryan?

  That's right.

• 1:08:24Speaker 04

Yeah, what if we're watching, what if somebody else?

• 1:08:26Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:26Speaker 04

Has inhabited Tua's body? Cause Tua was actually.

• 1:08:29Chris Ryan?

  We're watching George Blanda.

• 1:08:30Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:08:33Bill Simmons?

What do you, you have a weak link?

• 1:08:34Chris Ryan?

Uh, I, I, I think Julie Christie's hair and her vibe. Uh, I mean, like, I think she is one of the most stunning women that's ever been born, but like this, this haircut was not doing her any favors.

• 1:08:45Bill Simmons?

Seventies. What's age the worst? At some point, there's a quote, one of the players goes, looks like we got us a rich quarterback.

• 1:08:53Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:08:53Bill Simmons?

And I was thinking now every like half the Brock Purdy makes fifty three million a year. What quarterback's not rich? What else do you have for what's age the worst?

• 1:09:01Chris Ryan?

Warren Beatty's nineteen seventies character names?

• 1:09:03Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:04Chris Ryan?

Joe, John, Joe, Joseph, George, Nikki, Joe, John.

• 1:09:08Bill Simmons?

  Oh my God.

• 1:09:10Chris Ryan?

Put a little fucking elbow grease into this, Warren.

• 1:09:13Bill Simmons?

But that's what he's trying to be regular guy.

• 1:09:15Chris Ryan?

  I know.

• 1:09:15Bill Simmons?

  Everything.

• 1:09:17Speaker 04

But Jared's numbers. They are saying that Jared is completing an astounding sixty percent of his passes. With a whopping eighteen touchdowns.

• 1:09:28Bill Simmons?

  Oh.

• 1:09:28Speaker 04

Like fucking Jared is Derek Carr.

• 1:09:31Bill Simmons?

That might've been like the number three QB.

• 1:09:33Speaker 04

It might've been, but that as being like an incredible stat line, that's age the worst.

• 1:09:39Chris Ryan?

It is kind of funny to watch this movie and think about. Is this movie about Jimmy Garoppolo? Like, would this movie be like if Matt Stafford died? Jimmy Garoppolo would become the starting quarterback.

• 1:09:54Bill Simmons?

I'm looking up, uh. So would you, would you say Jared had?

• 1:09:58Speaker 04

Since he was completing six percent of his passes, eighteen TDs. But look, I mean, I know like Dan Foulce is playing at this time, right? So there are some guys that are chucking it all around. Are they not, or am I fucking completely off base? I don't know.

• 1:10:11Bill Simmons?

Eighteen TDs, so five, Dan Pastorini had seventeen, he was fifteenth overall that year.

• 1:10:17Speaker 04

  Hmm.

• 1:10:18Bill Simmons?

Uh. Terry Bradshaw had twenty, he was tenth. Oh, 28. No, I'm looking at the wrong thing. Uh, no, that's actually really good.

• 1:10:29Bill Simmons?

Gary Danielson, 18 TDs, he was sixth.

• 1:10:32Speaker 04

  Wow, Jesus.

• 1:10:34Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I was, I was looking at interceptions because those are higher. Fran Tarkenton led the league that year with 32 interceptions.

• 1:10:39Speaker 04

  He threw 32.

• 1:10:41Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:41Speaker 04

  Two.

• 1:10:42Bill Simmons?

And guess what? Ken Stabler had 30.

• 1:10:44Chris Ryan?

Well, Ken Stabler, it was all, all or nothing.

• 1:10:46Speaker 04

  Yeah, right.

• 1:10:47Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 1:10:47Speaker 04

  Snake.

• 1:10:48Bill Simmons?

Steve Grogan had 23. Yeah, you were more likely to throw. Joe Passarchik that year had 12 TDs and 23 interceptions.

• 1:10:55Speaker 04

  Hmm.

• 1:10:56Bill Simmons?

These guys were just getting massacred.

• 1:10:58Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:58Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:10:59Chris Ryan?

Anyway. I have 1970s quarterback, like, offensive line slash protections. Can't really imagine Drake May making it through too many of these games.

• 1:11:08Bill Simmons?

  Uh, I have a couple.

• 1:11:10Chris Ryan?

Okay. This is what's the age of the worst?

• 1:11:14Bill Simmons?

Julie Christie trying to save Pagelsham.

• 1:11:18Bill Simmons?

The town of Pagelsham. Here's what we know. There's 1,760 citizens losing their homes because they're building a refinery.

• 1:11:26Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:11:26Bill Simmons?

Are you allowed to just take people's homes? Is that a thing that happens?

• 1:11:30Chris Ryan?

  I guess eminent domain.

• 1:11:31Speaker 04

  M eminent domain.

• 1:11:31Chris Ryan?

Here, I don't know if it's, it happens in the England.

• 1:11:33Bill Simmons?

  That's a thing that happens?

• 1:11:34Speaker 04

I have some really, really dark history. You ever heard of Urban Renewal?

• 1:11:38Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:39Bill Simmons?

  I'm just saying.

• 1:11:39Speaker 04

  I'm just.

• 1:11:40Bill Simmons?

  Pagelsham.

• 1:11:41Chris Ryan?

I know you've read some Howard's Inn, man. Come on.

• 1:11:43Bill Simmons?

No, but Leo Farnsworth's just like, yeah, I'll be taking, I'm just building a refinery, guys.

• 1:11:48Speaker 04

We about to get a new pod here.

• 1:11:49Bill Simmons?

I need it. I just need a more info.

• 1:11:52Speaker 04

I'm about to turn Bill on to some shit.

• 1:11:53Chris Ryan?

  A people's history of Pagelsham.

• 1:11:55Speaker 04

We about to get a new pod.

• 1:11:57Bill Simmons?

  What's her job?

• 1:11:58Chris Ryan?

  The bad things happen.

• 1:11:59Bill Simmons?

She's a teacher. She just leaves?

• 1:12:01Chris Ryan?

It's, yeah, it's, well, with Super Bowl, it always.

• 1:12:03Bill Simmons?

  She's gone. She's in LA.

• 1:12:04Speaker 04

She's going to save the town.

• 1:12:06Bill Simmons?

  It's in December.

• 1:12:07Speaker 04

  Right.

• 1:12:08Bill Simmons?

  It's the school year.

• 1:12:08Chris Ryan?

But it doesn't matter if she's not successful, there will be no school.

• 1:12:11Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:12:12Bill Simmons?

She's not dating or married. No kids.

• 1:12:14Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 1:12:15Chris Ryan?

Well, Pagelsham, it's only, you know, maybe the, the pickings aren't great.

• 1:12:17Speaker 04

Yeah. She came out there, but it's all block cost plan. She's fine so late.

• 1:12:21Bill Simmons?

Just asking questions. Um, how did the clarinet end up in front of Tom Jared's locker at the end? Why did that happen? Where'd it come from?

• 1:12:31Chris Ryan?

  You sound like Wendy.

• 1:12:32Bill Simmons?

  Why is that?

• 1:12:35Speaker 04

Did he bring it with him?

• 1:12:36Speaker 06

The clarinet or the saxophone jumps back and forth between like in real life and then only with the Angels.

• 1:12:41Bill Simmons?

Yeah, cuz you could maybe like, did James Mason leave it there? Like, was there, you know, like, is?

• 1:12:47Chris Ryan?

We haven't mentioned James Mason yet.

• 1:12:48Bill Simmons?

No. We should have. I don't know why it's there. I don't know why it shows up in the locker room. It's just basically to make Max think that it's really Joe and it's not. But it has no purpose. Here's my big one, though. This is more than a nitpick. I just don't think it was a catch on the final play.

• 1:13:07Chris Ryan?

  Oh.

• 1:13:07Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I don't think he had two feet down. He's, he caught it. He, he's started to make a football move, but not really. And then it's a fumble and Joe Pendleton, Tom Jarrett goes 60 yards.

• 1:13:18Chris Ryan?

Oh, so you feel like that's an incomplete pass?

• 1:13:20Bill Simmons?

I thought it was an incomplete pass.

• 1:13:21Chris Ryan?

Yeah. But that was what was great about football back then. They just had to let it rock.

• 1:13:25Bill Simmons?

Right. It's replay. Do you think that was a continuation, Craig?

• 1:13:30Speaker 06

Uh, that didn't jump out to me. What jumped out to me was that that was, that would be the greatest play in Super Bowl history and no one really even talked about it. The quarterback picks up the ball, runs for a 60-yard touchdown in overtime to win. The crowd barely makes a noise.

• 1:13:45Bill Simmons?

I know. And there's no announcers. Yeah, no announcers really heard that one. I don't know what Kirk Adie was doing on that play. Um, that's all I have for what's age of wars. Ruffel Hannah Rubenek Partridge overacting where Jack Warden dials it up during the, uh, during the murder, kind of when they're trying to turn the tables and get the confession.

• 1:14:04Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:05Bill Simmons?

He starts just screaming for 40 seconds.

• 1:14:08Chris Ryan?

I, I could, I could have done without the Agatha Christie part.

• 1:14:11Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:11Chris Ryan?

I would have taken five more Super Bowl plays and three less minutes of him being like, and it was you in the kitchen with the candlestick.

• 1:14:18Bill Simmons?

I needed, needed to see Stevie Nicks with the Eagles at the halftime show. There's just a lot of ways that could have gone.

• 1:14:24Chris Ryan?

  David Geffen hanging out, yeah.

• 1:14:27Bill Simmons?

  David Geffen.

• 1:14:29Bill Simmons?

The CR thinks Luke Wilson could have been Harrison Ford. How does take a word? Do you have one, Ben?

• 1:14:33Speaker 04

  I do.

• 1:14:34Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 1:14:34Speaker 04

  This is a horror movie.

• 1:14:37Speaker 04

You could look at this as a horror movie, as a guy who's being tortured over and over and over again by God for some reason. Think about this. This is heaven. These are the people who cycle in bodies all day long. They get this guy out too early, essentially screwing up his entire life.

• 1:15:00Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:01Speaker 04

Killing him. They killed him. They put him in another body. He falls in love, then they yank him out of that body to put him in another body. Then they take his memory. So all it is for him to essentially die at the end of the movie, he dies. He dies. There's no more jail. He dies. The dude's dead. He has no consciousness, no remembrance of, or no memory of who he was. He's dead. You could make an argument that this entire time, it wasn't God who was doing all of this to him. That it was the devil, that it was the devil trying to get his soul. I'm telling you, the devil trying to get his soul.

• 1:15:39Chris Ryan?

We actually don't know where that plane goes.

• 1:15:41Speaker 04

We don't know, and torturing him over and over and over. It's kind of like the plot of the show The Good Place.

• 1:15:47Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:47Speaker 04

It's like when you look at it, he gets fucked over for nothing. Like the entire time and it never works out. Some other guy gets his chick because he came in and did all the work. And now he's off.

• 1:16:01Chris Ryan?

His soul gets her though. Like they'll, they're connected. They see deep into each other's eyes in the hallway.

• 1:16:07Speaker 04

  Maybe.

• 1:16:10Speaker 04

Maybe, maybe, but that's not how I see it. The moment he loses his memory, and think about when the guy tells him that he's losing his memory. He didn't tell him that before. He didn't say, hey, we're gonna put you in a bottle of this guy. You're gonna lose your memory before. He gets him out there and swapped the body. And then he's, he's fading away like fucking Kenobi, right? I agree that it was completely fucked up by Mr. Jordan.

• 1:16:30Chris Ryan?

This isn't my, this is not my hot take, but you could say Joe is just an all time bad dude. Because he is basically using other human beings as meat puppets so that he can play in one fucking game.

• 1:16:41Speaker 04

Right. Like he's, he is like legitimately, you can look at this entire movie as a horror movie if you want. Cause like looking at it as an older guy, I'm like, god damn, this shit is kind of fucked up.

• 1:16:51Chris Ryan?

Why, why is Joe a bad guy? I mean, Tom Jared would have died anyway. Yeah, but Joe is like, rather than go to heaven.

• 1:16:57Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:16:58Chris Ryan?

I need to have this affirmation of my athletic career.

• 1:17:01Speaker 04

  But who is he harming?

• 1:17:02Chris Ryan?

  Well.

• 1:17:03Bill Simmons?

That's not what he said, though. He, they took him mistakenly. It wasn't his time. He wanted to live something as close to his life as he had before.

• 1:17:10Chris Ryan?

Right. But he's only interested in doing it with a guy who's athletically like gifted enough so that they could feasibly be trained to play quarterback. It's not like, he's trying to like bend the rules a little bit.

• 1:17:20Speaker 04

  Think about the horror.

• 1:17:21Chris Ryan?

This is also my hottest take that I've come up with on the spot.

• 1:17:23Speaker 04

Think about the horror. The horror. They're going around showing him people that are about to die. And it's these people, this is like Final Destination shit.

• 1:17:31Chris Ryan?

  He's like, he's too short.

• 1:17:32Speaker 04

He's too short. This guy's on the highway. That guy probably fell off, broke his shit. The dude probably like Dale Earnhardt it out where he was like driving the car. This guy probably crashed, probably crashed the car. It's like, it's, it's kind of scary when you think about the metaphysics of it all.

• 1:17:48Bill Simmons?

  Um.

• 1:17:51Bill Simmons?

So I was gonna talk about this later, but we should talk about this now.

• 1:17:54Chris Ryan?

  For your hottest take?

• 1:17:55Bill Simmons?

No, just in general. Cause the different version of this movie is he just has his memory the whole time and it ends.

• 1:18:01Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:01Bill Simmons?

But it's not as good of a movie.

• 1:18:03Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:03Bill Simmons?

Because we don't get the Jack Warden scene.

• 1:18:04Speaker 04

  Certainly.

• 1:18:05Bill Simmons?

And we don't get the, you're the quarterback scene. So for the movie, it works better. But for real life, it's way better to keep his memory and just be like, all right, now I've got to figure out how to be Tom Jared for the next 40 years. But there's this other piece, like what if Tom Jared was like married with two kids?

• 1:18:22Chris Ryan?

I hadn't even thought of that.

• 1:18:23Speaker 04

I hadn't thought of that either.

• 1:18:24Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:24Speaker 04

Because then e- even if you become Tom Jared and you're married, but also think about your parents.

• 1:18:29Bill Simmons?

He might've had a side piece too. He might've had a whole.

• 1:18:31Chris Ryan?

And Tom Jared theoretically is third string quarterback. So he probably has like a two bedroom place in like Encino. You know, like, and it's like, he's not living like the, the.

• 1:18:41Bill Simmons?

But do you think now that Joe Pendleton's soul is in Tom Jared, he's just gonna be like, you know what I've been thinking? We should move to Malibu.

• 1:18:48Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, right.

• 1:18:49Bill Simmons?

Just start doing the things Joe would have done anyway?

• 1:18:51Speaker 04

I have another thought, a sequel horror movie.

• 1:18:54Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:55Speaker 04

To where Joe Pendleton's soul actually starts fighting and presenting himself. He like, he's coming up, there's a movie like this that I'm thinking about, but like, he's trying to take over.

• 1:19:07Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:07Speaker 04

He's picking up the thing. Tom Jared's breaking the fucking saxophone. It's heaven will not wait. Give me my colon, give me my body back.

• 1:19:17Bill Simmons?

  It's good stuff.

• 1:19:19Bill Simmons?

I'm not, I'm not against this one. You really could say Mr. Jordan was actually the devil and he wasn't in heaven, that he's fucking with him.

• 1:19:25Chris Ryan?

He's a jigsaw and saw. Uh, mine is that when, uh, Mr. Jordan says, "The likelihood of one individual being right increases in direct proportion to the intensity with which others are trying to prove him wrong." He just basically invents Jim Rome in the jungle right there. Mr. Jordan invented take culture. The sag.

• 1:19:49Bill Simmons?

Jim Rome watched that and went,

• 1:19:52Bill Simmons?

  "And was like, yes."

• 1:19:55Bill Simmons?

Jay Williams is like, "Straight it down. I like this egg." Um,

• 1:20:01Bill Simmons?

my hottest take, I think Julie Christie was the hottest British lady that ever lived.

• 1:20:05Speaker 04

  Aw, come on, man.

• 1:20:06Bill Simmons?

I think the British goat, not necessarily in this movie, but just for me, it's her and it was Elizabeth Hurley in the finals.

• 1:20:12Speaker 04

Eva Green? Is Eva Green British?

• 1:20:15Chris Ryan?

I believe she is, but I, now you still got me thinking of young Helen Mirren.

• 1:20:18Speaker 04

  Young Helen Mirren, I mean.

• 1:20:19Bill Simmons?

  Eva Green's British?

• 1:20:20Chris Ryan?

  She's French.

• 1:20:21Speaker 04

Oh, yeah, she's French. My bad.

• 1:20:23Bill Simmons?

I saw Julie Christie against everybody.

• 1:20:25Speaker 04

  The dreamers.

• 1:20:25Bill Simmons?

So that's the hottest take. Ben Lathan Award, did this movie need more black people?

• 1:20:29Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:20:31Speaker 04

  We're talking, it's football.

• 1:20:33Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:33Chris Ryan?

There's a, the, the, the line play is, is heavily black.

• 1:20:36Speaker 04

They should have been, first of all, they should have been, the moment that he became Joe, he should have called up his homeboys that's on the football team and he should have had to convince them that he was Joe.

• 1:20:49Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 1:20:50Speaker 04

Hysterical, they're all together. Think about.

• 1:20:53Bill Simmons?

Like the left tackle and like the receiver?

• 1:20:56Speaker 04

  Yeah. Think about the kookiness.

• 1:20:57Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:58Speaker 04

Of those people in that stuck up, like lily white mansion, when they come down and the linebacker room is in the, the, the living room, when the wide receiver room is out there.

• 1:21:12Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:12Speaker 04

This is a funny thing in the movie that they missed. It's a funny thing in the movie that they missed.

• 1:21:17Bill Simmons?

Even Max being black would have worked. I was thinking, there's a whole alternate universe where Tom Jared is black. And it's like, you have your chance to come back and play for the ribs. But you're gonna be Tom Jared.

• 1:21:31Chris Ryan?

This is sort of like a footnote, like a, an extra caveat to the Ben Lathan Award should be the Matthew McConaughey, now imagining his black.

• 1:21:39Speaker 04

Black award? Think about that, cause, cause, cause if you're, if you're, if you're.

• 1:21:47Chris Ryan?

Just get to the end of any movie and just be like, now imagine this black.

• 1:21:52Speaker 04

  This is like.

• 1:21:52Chris Ryan?

  Seventy eight.

• 1:21:53Speaker 04

Seventy eight. Seventy eight. So being a quarterback is one thing.

• 1:21:57Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:58Speaker 04

But then you gotta go out into the world in nineteen seventy eight. He's gonna think about that for a second. If it's, it wouldn't have been Tom Jared, it would have been Derek Jenkins.

• 1:22:08Bill Simmons?

Well, it would have been the new second string quarterback who would have been like the Joe Milton of that team.

• 1:22:12Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:22:12Bill Simmons?

And he would have to be like, oh, okay. How bad do I want this?

• 1:22:16Speaker 04

How bad do I want it? Yeah.

• 1:22:17Chris Ryan?

What happened with Joe Milton? Why'd you guys rate him?

• 1:22:19Bill Simmons?

  Probably a better sequel.

• 1:22:21Speaker 04

  This, the sequel.

• 1:22:22Bill Simmons?

Joe Pendleton becomes the black backup quarterback.

• 1:22:25Speaker 04

  And he changed, he rewrites.

• 1:22:26Bill Simmons?

Wins the Super Bowl and then.

• 1:22:27Speaker 04

He rewrites the record books on it.

• 1:22:29Chris Ryan?

And he's just, he's just playing Italian jazz on his soprano.

• 1:22:32Speaker 04

The reason why they got rid of Joe Milton, because it doesn't matter if you can throw the football a hundred and fifty miles. You can't throw it to a live person.

• 1:22:40Chris Ryan?

Okay. He had that one game.

• 1:22:43Bill Simmons?

Casting what ifs. Warren Beatty really wanted Cary Grant to accept the role of Mr. Jordan. Offered him one million dollars and had his ex-wife Diane Cannon pushing. And Cary Grant said, no, thanks. I will stay retired. Turned out a million dollars.

• 1:22:55Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:56Bill Simmons?

James Mason. I still love the verdict James Mason.

• 1:22:59Chris Ryan?

  For incredible.

• 1:23:00Bill Simmons?

And that's why it should be disallowed.

• 1:23:04Bill Simmons?

  Furthermore.

• 1:23:07Bill Simmons?

I like evil James Mason more than heavenly James Mason.

• 1:23:09Chris Ryan?

Captain Nemo James Mason is great.

• 1:23:12Bill Simmons?

Diane Keaton was Warren Beatty's alleged first choice for the role. Buck Henry has said a lot after that. They tested all these actresses and, and it just. Warren Beatty really wanted to be Julie Christie because he was still kind of in love with her.

• 1:23:24Chris Ryan?

It's a difficult period for casting what ifs. Doing super seventies month is hard because it's like the same thirty people.

• 1:23:29Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:30Chris Ryan?

  Are linked to the role.

• 1:23:31Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:32Chris Ryan?

Because they were like, this is how you get the movie made. Just get one of these thirty people.

• 1:23:34Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:35Speaker 04

Is, a question about that because that is true. You hear the same names because some of the names.

• 1:23:39Chris Ryan?

Hagman Pacino, De Niro, blah, blah, blah.

• 1:23:41Speaker 04

Yeah. Some of the names you hear that, you know, they was gonna play Sonny. It's like stupid. Is the studio system still running things at this point? No, right?

• 1:23:48Bill Simmons?

No, but they just want to bankroll.

• 1:23:50Speaker 04

  But they're recycling.

• 1:23:51Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, I mean, if you.

• 1:23:52Speaker 04

For every role, it's like the same guy.

• 1:23:53Chris Ryan?

The first Goldman book is a lot about the star you need to get any movie made. You gotta get Clint Eastwood, you gotta get Robert Redford.

• 1:24:00Bill Simmons?

Basically, everybody, Warren Beatty was the number one. If we get this guy, the movie's getting made. And Newman and Redford were probably two A and two B, I think, right? Back then?

• 1:24:08Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:09Speaker 04

And this, this is kind of like, uh, I remember there used to be this, I can't remember what it was, it's like.

• 1:24:13Chris Ryan?

Is Eastwood not like the biggest star in the world at this point?

• 1:24:17Bill Simmons?

He just couldn't have been in a movie like this.

• 1:24:19Chris Ryan?

  No, but is, although.

• 1:24:21Bill Simmons?

I think he was the most reliable box office guy.

• 1:24:24Speaker 04

But you don't hear his name a lot when you hear about this, oh, this could have been this guy, it's could have been this guy. It seems like.

• 1:24:28Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, it's hard to imagine.

• 1:24:29Speaker 04

He's got enough cachet to just do his own movies that he wants to do that are only for him.

• 1:24:34Bill Simmons?

He would have been a good Jack Horner.

• 1:24:36Chris Ryan?

  Eastwood?

• 1:24:37Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, just being Eastwood.

• 1:24:41Chris Ryan?

He's like, I'm gonna shoot you, Jack. He's just like, I'll tell you when you're ready to shoot, you little twerp. Can you imagine Eastwood being like the day that Grodin gets the drop on him and shoots him and he falls into a well? I don't think I could ever see that happening.

• 1:24:53Bill Simmons?

You got something itching in those pants waiting to get out, Dirk. Um, three directors considered to direct.

• 1:25:07Chris Ryan?

  First Jack Horner.

• 1:25:09Bill Simmons?

Arthur Penn, Mike Nichols, Peter Bogdanovich, all bounced around, but Beatty really wanted to direct it himself.

• 1:25:15Speaker 04

Bogdanovich's version would be really interesting to me.

• 1:25:17Bill Simmons?

His career was pretty much in, in a shambles at this point.

• 1:25:21Chris Ryan?

There's also like this weird thing with this movie. You know, it's, it's very cool looking and it's, it's delightful, but like the co-directing credit. And Buck Henry was brought on because Beatty didn't want to have to direct other actors in scenes that he's in. But Warren Beatty's in almost every scene, so.

• 1:25:38Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:39Chris Ryan?

  Which directing did he do?

• 1:25:40Bill Simmons?

Buck Henry's really bitter in the book, like he definitely is lobbing grenades. Neil Diamond composed the song titled Heaven Can Wait. Specifically for the film, but Beatty, uh, Beatty decides to decline to use it. I was trying to think what that song could be. Heaven can wait.

• 1:26:00Bill Simmons?

Best that guy award. So the Rams coach, played by my guy Dolph Sweet, who is the dad in Give Me a Break with Mel Carter.

• 1:26:08Chris Ryan?

I have John Randolph, the Rams owner.

• 1:26:11Bill Simmons?

  Oh, that's a good one.

• 1:26:12Speaker 04

I have William Bogart, who's in the,

• 1:26:16Speaker 04

the boardroom scene. He's the dad from, he's on Small, Small Wonder.

• 1:26:21Bill Simmons?

Small Wonder, good one. Diane Wait- Diane Waiters Award has to go to Diane Cannon. I think she's eligible.

• 1:26:27Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah?

• 1:26:27Speaker 04

  What about Groton?

• 1:26:29Bill Simmons?

Could be one or the other.

• 1:26:30Chris Ryan?

I had Warden or Mason. I guess Warden's in too much. I had Mason.

• 1:26:33Bill Simmons?

Warden's in too much. Mason? Over Diane Cannon?

• 1:26:36Chris Ryan?

Well, I feel like Cannon's like the third person in this film. Like, she's third billing.

• 1:26:40Speaker 04

It's definitely a, well, you think so? It wouldn't be Julie Christie?

• 1:26:44Chris Ryan?

  No, she's

• 1:26:44Speaker 04

  She's second billing.

• 1:26:45Bill Simmons?

Fine, Deacon Jones. Got a couple lines.

• 1:26:47Chris Ryan?

  There you go.

• 1:26:49Bill Simmons?

  Recasting couch director for city.

• 1:26:56Bill Simmons?

I actually really like how this movie's cast. I don't think I would do anything.

• 1:27:00Chris Ryan?

You wouldn't move it to Foxborough?

• 1:27:01Bill Simmons?

  No.

• 1:27:05Bill Simmons?

No, I think this needs to be away. We need the Malibu footage.

• 1:27:08Speaker 04

You know what? I had a thought, man. New Orleans, I know I'm being a homer. New Orleans works. Put like a little spiritual, since this is a horror movie anyway, spiritual voodoo element.

• 1:27:19Bill Simmons?

  For New Orleans, yeah.

• 1:27:20Speaker 04

Some sort. Very compact city. He's playing for the Saints. Saints going to the Super Bowl would be a big deal. I think New Orleans could have worked.

• 1:27:29Bill Simmons?

Only four times, oh, half ass internet research, only four times in Oscars history have, two people have been nominated for Best Directing Oscar.

• 1:27:41Bill Simmons?

The last two were the Coen Brothers, twice for True Grit and for No Country For Old Men. Heaven Can Wait, and then two guys for West Side Story. Not common. They usually have a bunch of rules that you can't have co-directors. They discourage it. They don't like it.

• 1:27:55Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I think you have to be like the Coen Brothers who are like, no, no, no, it's cool. We're doing this like as a team.

• 1:28:03Bill Simmons?

Biskin, he said Christie used to be really hard on Warren Beatty in his book about that he was basically making sellout movies. And apparently, um, in that wide shot when he's walking with her before, like the la- basically their last scene together in the mansion, when he tells her if I ever come back as their own quarterback, the wide shot they're talking and they're just supposed to pretend they're talking. And apparently she was saying, I can't believe you're still making these fucking dumb movies. All these people are all over Europe making fabulous films and you're still doing this shit. And then smiling at him like she was sweet talking him and was just like fucking with him the whole movie.

• 1:28:39Chris Ryan?

Yeah, but now in retrospect, it's like, what, what is she talking about? Cause like Parallax View Shampoo and making Mrs. Miller, which pre- are the precursors to this are all.

• 1:28:49Bill Simmons?

And I would argue this was a really good movie that he should have done. I don't.

• 1:28:53Chris Ryan?

And he needs red. So where's like all the shit?

• 1:28:55Bill Simmons?

Typical British person. This is why they fucking suck.

• 1:28:57Speaker 04

  Oh, whoa.

• 1:28:58Bill Simmons?

Hey, get them the fuck out of here. We sent them packing in 1776. I stand by it.

• 1:29:03Speaker 04

  It wasn't we.

• 1:29:04Bill Simmons?

  I'm just saying.

• 1:29:07Speaker 04

It wasn't we. I didn't have much say in it. Actually, I did, you know, shout out to Christmas addicts. I mean, we went first. You guys, you don't care. You guys don't care about that. Okay, cool. Gotcha.

• 1:29:21Bill Simmons?

I'm just gonna move on to Apex Mountain.

• 1:29:22Speaker 04

  Go for it.

• 1:29:23Bill Simmons?

  Warren Beatty?

• 1:29:25Speaker 04

  No, no, no.

• 1:29:26Chris Ryan?

  What is this Apex Mountain?

• 1:29:28Bill Simmons?

  I think it's, uh.

• 1:29:29Chris Ryan?

  I actually think it's shampoo. I think it's reds.

• 1:29:31Speaker 04

  Reds?

• 1:29:33Chris Ryan?

  Cause he gets the Oscar.

• 1:29:34Bill Simmons?

I would say shampoo. I personally would say shampoo because I think after shampoo, he could do anything he wanted, which ended up being this movie that he writes, produces, directs and stars in the, and the studio is like, here, take money.

• 1:29:45Chris Ryan?

Something to be said for the fact that he does reds and doesn't really do anything with it until Ishtar.

• 1:29:51Bill Simmons?

Yeah, he has like a five year, I think he's just getting down.

• 1:29:56Speaker 04

  Coked up.

• 1:29:57Chris Ryan?

  1980.

• 1:29:58Bill Simmons?

I don't know if he was a coke guy.

• 1:29:59Chris Ryan?

1982, Los Angeles, Warren Beatty coming off reds. I think he's getting chicks.

• 1:30:03Bill Simmons?

  Social engagements.

• 1:30:04Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:30:05Bill Simmons?

Maybe, who knows? Julie Christie, no. I told you her apex mountain. It's 1965. Movies involving heaven?

• 1:30:12Speaker 04

Metaphysical body swap movies. I have this, I like, it's a question now. So it's this, it's like chances are, which I love, which you guys don't really care about.

• 1:30:21Chris Ryan?

  Freaky Friday?

• 1:30:23Speaker 04

  You're talking about.

• 1:30:25Bill Simmons?

  Switching bodies?

• 1:30:26Speaker 04

  Well, I'm talking about metaphysical.

• 1:30:27Chris Ryan?

Yeah, like coming back down from.

• 1:30:29Speaker 04

  Coming back down.

• 1:30:30Bill Simmons?

I think this is the most famous one, right?

• 1:30:33Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I mean, I think Dave is just they find a twin. It's not, that's nothing like metaphysical about it.

• 1:30:39Bill Simmons?

Um, this is the biggest movie of a giant movie year.

• 1:30:42Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:42Speaker 04

Actually, to be honest with you, this is the movie that a lot of those movies are probably mimicking.

• 1:30:47Speaker 06

  What about Big?

• 1:30:49Speaker 04

That's a metaphysical, that's a metaphysical body swap movie, not involved in heaven, but it's like supernatural type of shit.

• 1:30:55Bill Simmons?

  Big's a good one.

• 1:30:56Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:30:56Bill Simmons?

  Maybe.

• 1:30:57Speaker 04

Actually, it's probably Big. Big is probably, probably sets the tone for this. It's not like involving God, but it's probably Big.

• 1:31:03Bill Simmons?

What's it, this isn't Grodin, but what is Grodin? Is it Midnight Run?

• 1:31:08Chris Ryan?

Yeah, does Midnight Run and then his talk show comes after Midnight Run?

• 1:31:11Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:11Chris Ryan?

  A couple of years later?

• 1:31:13Bill Simmons?

Jack Warden, probably not. I think he won, got nominated for stuff. The Rams, they win a Super Bowl.

• 1:31:18Chris Ryan?

First iteration of the LA Rams.

• 1:31:20Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:20Chris Ryan?

  I think you could say.

• 1:31:21Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:31:21Bill Simmons?

  Diane Cannon.

• 1:31:26Bill Simmons?

She's going to Laker games, Magic's about to show up. Got nominated for an Oscar.

• 1:31:30Speaker 04

She actually becomes, do you think the Showtime, it could be argued that the Showtime Lakers is actually the apex mountain of Diane Cannon? Like so many people know her.

• 1:31:41Bill Simmons?

  In the NBA Fantastic commercial?

• 1:31:43Speaker 04

  Know her from just being.

• 1:31:45Chris Ryan?

  Being a Lakers super fan.

• 1:31:46Speaker 04

  Being a Lakers super fan.

• 1:31:47Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:48Speaker 04

You could argue that the Showtime Lakers are.

• 1:31:50Bill Simmons?

I think she was in the Pointer Sisters NBA Fantastic commercial.

• 1:31:53Chris Ryan?

A Shaka Khan song. She's like, she's an absolute Renaissance woman.

• 1:32:03Bill Simmons?

  Overtime Super Bowl games, no.

• 1:32:06Speaker 04

Shout out to the Falcons fans.

• 1:32:07Bill Simmons?

Rich person mansions in a movie. Is there a better one than the Fallow, whatever it's called mansion?

• 1:32:13Chris Ryan?

Uh, like somebody who's real, I mean, Xanadu in Citizen Kane's pretty cool.

• 1:32:17Speaker 04

The Greystone Mansion? Batman TV, TV show.

• 1:32:22Bill Simmons?

  It's a pretty good mansion.

• 1:32:23Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:32:24Chris Ryan?

  Cruiser Hanks. Hanks. Hanks.

• 1:32:28Speaker 04

  Hanks, yeah, Hanks.

• 1:32:30Chris Ryan?

  Hanks, Craig?

• 1:32:31Speaker 06

Yeah, I'm not as convinced as you guys, but yeah. Thanks.

• 1:32:34Speaker 04

I mean, to be honest with you.

• 1:32:35Speaker 06

  Cruz can do it.

• 1:32:35Speaker 04

  With the, with the.

• 1:32:36Chris Ryan?

Cruz is not convincing me as a quarterback. Come on.

• 1:32:40Bill Simmons?

I think his bike, his bike riding scene would have been incredible.

• 1:32:43Speaker 06

I don't know if Tom Hanks is convincing me as a quarterback either, though.

• 1:32:46Bill Simmons?

He would have really taken the football scene seriously.

• 1:32:48Chris Ryan?

I think if Tom Cruise had done this movie, he would have been like, I can get the butlers like to play for the Rams. Like, I'll get all of my.

• 1:32:55Bill Simmons?

  I'll get everybody.

• 1:32:56Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:57Bill Simmons?

Scorsese or Spielberg? This feels like Spielberg.

• 1:32:59Speaker 04

  Spielberg.

• 1:33:00Bill Simmons?

A hundred times out of a hundred. What role would Philip Seymour Hoffman have played?

• 1:33:04Chris Ryan?

  Um.

• 1:33:05Speaker 06

Older him could have played Max.

• 1:33:06Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:09Bill Simmons?

Oh, I skipped your van, your, uh, flex category van.

• 1:33:12Speaker 04

  Already did it.

• 1:33:12Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 1:33:13Speaker 04

The five, uh, the, I wrote up the five.

• 1:33:18Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah, you did it.

• 1:33:18Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:33:19Bill Simmons?

  Craig, you're up.

• 1:33:20Speaker 06

I wanted to go with the George Ellerby Two Weeks With Pay Award for the character who def should have been fired.

• 1:33:25Chris Ryan?

  Hmm.

• 1:33:26Speaker 06

I kind of think every character in this movie should have been fired. Joe Pendleton, riding his bike on the freeway as a quarterback in the NFL for the Super Bowl. Jack Warden is a trainer who literally was not at the stadium on game day. Charles Grodin and Diane Cannon couldn't hide their affair at all.

• 1:33:43Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:43Speaker 06

Uh, and they couldn't kill, uh, Joe. Julie Christie, the teacher, just abandoned her ethics after one boardroom meeting.

• 1:33:49Chris Ryan?

  That's true.

• 1:33:50Bill Simmons?

  True.

• 1:33:50Speaker 06

And the Angels murdered Joe Pendleton twice.

• 1:33:53Speaker 04

  Cause they're demons.

• 1:33:54Chris Ryan?

  This is great.

• 1:33:55Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:33:55Bill Simmons?

  Everyone was in confidence.

• 1:33:56Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:33:57Bill Simmons?

The Rams coach didn't care that Tom Jared was legally dead.

• 1:34:02Speaker 06

Not one guy's doing their job well.

• 1:34:03Speaker 04

  Power right on two.

• 1:34:06Bill Simmons?

I like that, Craig. Picket nets. I have just a slew of them.

• 1:34:10Speaker 04

  It just, I mean, yeah.

• 1:34:10Chris Ryan?

I bet we all have very similar ones. Last start, why does, why does the head trainer get so much say over who's playing quarterback?

• 1:34:16Speaker 04

Yeah. Fucking doesn't matter what the fuck you think.

• 1:34:18Bill Simmons?

Only Alex Guerrero had that much.

• 1:34:20Chris Ryan?

There's a lot of CB12 in this movie. Yeah.

• 1:34:22Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:24Bill Simmons?

Um, how do you take over somebody's body?

• 1:34:27Speaker 04

It's so weird. He's like, he looks good. Yeah. Okay. He looks great. Why don't you go over there and stretch somebody out?

• 1:34:34Bill Simmons?

How do you take over someone's body if you don't know anything about their life? And wouldn't the first like two weeks be like, wait, where, where's the bathroom? Like what, who are you? Like you just want to know anything.

• 1:34:45Chris Ryan?

Yeah. Also, the biggest nitpick is unless I'm mistaken, we never know what shape Leo Farn- I mean, he's like Leo Farnsworth's in good shape.

• 1:34:52Bill Simmons?

He wouldn't know how old he is.

• 1:34:53Chris Ryan?

How old is he? We don't know what he looks like.

• 1:34:54Bill Simmons?

Yeah. How, what does he look like?

• 1:34:55Chris Ryan?

Like, he's gotta be decent looking if Julie Christie's into him pretty quickly.

• 1:34:59Bill Simmons?

I think that should have been a scene where he picked up a picture of him and looked at like a wedding picture of him and Diane Cannon and just, we get to see who it was.

• 1:35:07Speaker 04

So they do this same thing in a fantastic movie called Wonder Woman 1984.

• 1:35:15Chris Ryan?

  Be sarcastic about being fantastic.

• 1:35:16Speaker 04

Fucking terrible. Where it, where, uh, it's like legitimately like terrible. Chris Pine comes back.

• 1:35:25Speaker 04

As Steve Trevor, however, in a different body, we see him as Steve Trevor. When he sees himself, we see the person that he's supposed to be. They should have done that.

• 1:35:38Bill Simmons?

  Yep.

• 1:35:40Bill Simmons?

How does Max have time to train fake Leo Farnsworth for weeks when he's supposed to be the Rams trainer?

• 1:35:46Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:35:47Bill Simmons?

It's a really solid nitpick. I have a lot more.

• 1:35:51Bill Simmons?

Oh, we did. How old was Farnsworth? What was his body like? Uh, can you buy the Rams in like four days? Probably not. Probably a vote.

• 1:35:57Speaker 04

The fucking whole league has to vote.

• 1:35:59Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:59Speaker 04

  The commissioner has to vote.

• 1:36:00Bill Simmons?

Money has to be exchanged hands.

• 1:36:02Speaker 04

It doesn't matter how much, it doesn't matter if you come in and you go, I'll pay a hundred million dollars.

• 1:36:05Chris Ryan?

I know. They talked about the tush push for like 18 months.

• 1:36:08Speaker 04

Yeah. It's like, you can't, you can't, no fucking way. You can't do this.

• 1:36:11Bill Simmons?

He, he starts trying to buy them during the playoffs and then they're in the Super Bowl and he's already the owner and he's been practicing for a couple of weeks.

• 1:36:18Chris Ryan?

That the Jets, Ravens and, uh, Pats all got behind the Eagles there for the tush push. It's all the people, all the teams of the ring.

• 1:36:25Bill Simmons?

All the people with agro coaches.

• 1:36:27Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:36:28Bill Simmons?

Frable's like, I fucking love the tush push. What happened to Tom Jared when Leo was practicing with the Rams? The owner just shows up and starts taking reps and they're about to play in the Super Bowl and they have a starting quarterback.

• 1:36:42Speaker 04

What do you mean, what happened to him?

• 1:36:43Bill Simmons?

Tom Jared's just like, alright, I'll just be over here. Like, he's the starting quarterback. They're about to play in the Super Bowl. This would have been the hugest story. Like, insane new Rams owner, takes over Rams and takes reps from Jared during a practice. This is all anyone would have talked about.

• 1:36:59Chris Ryan?

It would have been incredible. I can't, so who would, Jared would have been third string at the start of the season, right?

• 1:37:06Speaker 04

  The second.

• 1:37:07Bill Simmons?

Jared was second. And he was starting for Pendleton, cause Pendleton was hurt. Cause Pendleton was coming back from an injury.

• 1:37:13Speaker 04

Oh Pendleton, wait, wait. Pendleton, oh, so Pendleton had hurt his knee?

• 1:37:17Bill Simmons?

He lost his job, he was coming back.

• 1:37:19Chris Ryan?

And that's why. And no one had ever seen anybody recover from a knee injury like that without surgery.

• 1:37:24Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:24Chris Ryan?

He basically did it with health training.

• 1:37:26Speaker 04

  With whey, protein and liver.

• 1:37:28Chris Ryan?

  And steroids.

• 1:37:30Bill Simmons?

Pablo Torre would have done a long podcast about Leo Farnsworth trying to practice with the team. And then done a media tour about it afterwards.

• 1:37:39Speaker 04

  Dude, this fucking guy, bro.

• 1:37:41Bill Simmons?

I've never seen anybody dine on the stupider story for a week and a half while we're doing your journalists. What the fuck was that? Seriously.

• 1:37:49Speaker 04

  What the?

• 1:37:50Bill Simmons?

Oh, Belichick's dating a girl. Oh, let me do nine shows about it.

• 1:37:54Chris Ryan?

  I can't tell, are you?

• 1:37:55Bill Simmons?

  Settle the fuck down.

• 1:37:56Chris Ryan?

If this was about Jeffrey Lurie though, would you be like, we gotta get Pablo Torre out of my mind?

• 1:38:00Speaker 04

Right? Like, why are you getting him?

• 1:38:02Bill Simmons?

Alright, you don't need to do a media tour about a fucking podcast.

• 1:38:05Speaker 04

  Everybody was talking about it.

• 1:38:06Bill Simmons?

That's fine. Maybe do two shows.

• 1:38:08Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:10Bill Simmons?

Could an owner actually play for his own NFL team?

• 1:38:14Speaker 04

  Uh, no.

• 1:38:15Chris Ryan?

I'm gonna say no. I would love to see the 1978 NFL owners guidelines. Cause I feel like those guys, guys were getting away with a lot back then.

• 1:38:25Bill Simmons?

But covered. I was thinking Matt Ishbia was the ultimate new owner syndrome guy.

• 1:38:29Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:29Bill Simmons?

But I think this might have topped it.

• 1:38:30Chris Ryan?

  Leo Farnsworth.

• 1:38:32Bill Simmons?

I own the Rams and I'm now the quarterback. Uh, so they, they shoot Leo in his house and they don't think they're gonna get caught?

• 1:38:39Chris Ryan?

  Well, this is a-

• 1:38:40Speaker 04

No, no, no, no. They don't fucking shoot him in his house. Because shoot him in his house means that somebody walks up to him while he's in a closet. Or he's in someplace where nobody knows where he is. And you double tap him and then go, somebody broke. No, that's not what they do. They fucking Lee Harvey Oswald him from a window in the house.

• 1:39:01Bill Simmons?

  I know.

• 1:39:01Speaker 04

While he's standing in broad daylight.

• 1:39:04Bill Simmons?

  And the cannon goes off.

• 1:39:04Speaker 04

  Yeah, so it makes-

• 1:39:06Bill Simmons?

By the way, impressive shot to time it with the cannon.

• 1:39:08Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:09Speaker 04

But absolute, makes absolutely zero sense whatsoever. You're caught. Like, you're caught.

• 1:39:15Bill Simmons?

It's the biggest possible gun that you could never hide in a million years. It would take five hours to take it apart.

• 1:39:22Speaker 04

But the funny part about that is they tried every other way to kill him. And then Groan goes, fuck it, I've got dome this motherfucker.

• 1:39:31Bill Simmons?

  He Lee Harbors him.

• 1:39:32Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:39:34Chris Ryan?

Well, and also the question then becomes, the Rams owner dies the day of the Super Bowl, or these murders discovered-

• 1:39:42Bill Simmons?

Like a week before. Yeah, the murders discovered the day of.

• 1:39:44Chris Ryan?

Which would then put the Rams at the center of yet another insane story.

• 1:39:48Bill Simmons?

Yeah, not to mention two quarterbacks dying.

• 1:39:51Chris Ryan?

Guy buys the team, makes himself starting quarterback, gets killed.

• 1:39:57Bill Simmons?

Max skips the Super Bowl to help the police catch the killer. We mentioned that. How did Max get to the Super Bowl that fast?

• 1:40:03Chris Ryan?

Is, like, he's got the Michael man.

• 1:40:05Bill Simmons?

Fourth quarter. He's like, yeah, we hit down in the Coliseum. This is the Super Bowl. All the, all the streets are closed.

• 1:40:10Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:11Bill Simmons?

  I don't know.

• 1:40:12Chris Ryan?

He gets, he gets from wherever Farnsworth is supposed to be living in Southern California to the Coliseum. Yeah.

• 1:40:18Bill Simmons?

  Any other pick that?

• 1:40:19Chris Ryan?

Uh, no, I've gotten them all out.

• 1:40:21Bill Simmons?

Okay. Sequel, prequel, prestige, TV, all black cast or untouchable. I think the prestige TV case is really good for this.

• 1:40:27Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:40:28Bill Simmons?

I would be, the whole Farnsworth, I would have, I could have spent eight episodes with it.

• 1:40:34Chris Ryan?

I would also stretch it out a little bit, so you got a little bit more Gruden and Cannon, like,

• 1:40:38Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:40:38Chris Ryan?

That character, it's like, what do they, what do these two talk about?

• 1:40:41Bill Simmons?

Maybe we go to Pagelsheim, see what's going on with the refinery.

• 1:40:44Speaker 04

The whole Gruden and, uh, the whole, uh, Gruden and Cannon thing? They got like, an episode or two just by themselves.

• 1:40:52Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:52Speaker 04

Just by themselves, trying to kill.

• 1:40:55Bill Simmons?

Is this movie better than Wayne Jenkins, Danny Trejo, Doris Burke, Sam Jackson, Nell, Byron Mayo, Barney Cousins, Tony Romo, Harling Mays, Chris Collins, or Daniel Plainview, Long Legs, or Wilford Brimley?

• 1:41:06Chris Ryan?

I broke a new character out for you.

• 1:41:09Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:41:09Chris Ryan?

  Just for this movie.

• 1:41:10Bill Simmons?

  So Pablo Torre?

• 1:41:11Chris Ryan?

  John Gruden.

• 1:41:12Bill Simmons?

  John Gruden?

• 1:41:13Chris Ryan?

Let me talk to you about this Joe Pendleton out of the Los Angeles Rams organization, okay? Running a concept I like to call Broom X Lightning, and I love the arm angle, and let me tell you something about Joe Pendleton though, the guy's a fruitcake, okay? With the alfalfa sprout shakes, we didn't have those in Mike Holmgren's QB room. Brett Favre was drinking six cans of Bush with three Percocets, and he did just fine. I don't know why I get him like, kind of like he's in strange brew. Yeah, he's from Ohio.

• 1:41:44Bill Simmons?

It was a little like the Bears. I liked it.

• 1:41:49Bill Simmons?

I didn't have one for this one, did you have one?

• 1:41:50Speaker 04

  What?

• 1:41:51Bill Simmons?

  A Wayne Jenkins?

• 1:41:52Chris Ryan?

He doesn't really do work. It's in his contract.

• 1:41:55Bill Simmons?

So I had to, I had to go back to Ryan Ruko, since it's WNBA, NBA time. I'll do Ruko.

• 1:42:01Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:42:02Bill Simmons?

Shooting Warren Beatty with a long rifle.

• 1:42:08Bill Simmons?

He's, I am from across the country, you bet!

• 1:42:12Chris Ryan?

My cannon goes off, you bet!

• 1:42:14Bill Simmons?

Uh, just want to ask her who gets it.

• 1:42:18Bill Simmons?

It won an Oscar for art direction.

• 1:42:19Chris Ryan?

  Hmm.

• 1:42:20Bill Simmons?

  So I guess that wins.

• 1:42:21Chris Ryan?

  Is that Silver, Richard Silver?

• 1:42:22Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I guess that's the winner.

• 1:42:23Speaker 04

You know what, though, I, I felt like maybe Warden.

• 1:42:29Bill Simmons?

  I like.

• 1:42:29Chris Ryan?

  Warden for best supporting?

• 1:42:30Speaker 04

  Best supporting.

• 1:42:31Bill Simmons?

The problem is, this was Watkins year for Deer Hunter.

• 1:42:33Speaker 04

Oh, yeah, yeah, so it's out, he's out.

• 1:42:35Chris Ryan?

Who won supporting actress this year?

• 1:42:37Bill Simmons?

  Uh, I don't remember.

• 1:42:41Speaker 04

  Deer Hunter.

• 1:42:41Bill Simmons?

  Probably an answerable question.

• 1:42:42Speaker 04

  One movie.

• 1:42:46Bill Simmons?

  Van.

• 1:42:47Speaker 04

  What's up?

• 1:42:47Bill Simmons?

If heaven was like heaven can wait and hell was like ghost and you could lock that in, are you good?

• 1:42:53Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:42:54Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 1:42:55Speaker 04

  Locked in.

• 1:42:55Chris Ryan?

Yeah, there's a lot of volatility there. So I thi- I think I'd take it.

• 1:42:58Bill Simmons?

  You'd take it?

• 1:42:59Chris Ryan?

Yeah. There's a chance heaven could be better. There's a real chance hell could be way worse.

• 1:43:03Bill Simmons?

  The plane seem- seems solid.

• 1:43:05Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:06Bill Simmons?

  Plane's taking you somewhere.

• 1:43:08Speaker 04

If you could have the version of heaven be actually what it is from any movie. If- if heaven is what it- what movie's heaven to you is the best heaven that you would like the most?

• 1:43:22Chris Ryan?

I really, I just aesthetically speaking, the most pleasant is defending your life.

• 1:43:27Speaker 04

Oh, yeah, defending your life is good.

• 1:43:29Chris Ryan?

Cause I really like the idea of being able to eat as much as you want.

• 1:43:31Speaker 04

And the food tasting fucking amazing whenever you eat.

• 1:43:34Chris Ryan?

But I would have a hard time like going over every pot, you know, in front of a jury.

• 1:43:39Bill Simmons?

I guess my question with heaven is people are still working in heaven in this movie. Like Buck Henry and James Mason have jobs.

• 1:43:46Chris Ryan?

I think they're- but they're entities. They're spirits or angels.

• 1:43:48Speaker 06

The answer is this is the end. Incredible heaven.

• 1:43:51Speaker 04

  That was a good heaven.

• 1:43:52Bill Simmons?

  Oh, that's a good heaven.

• 1:43:54Speaker 04

  That's a good heaven.

• 1:43:54Chris Ryan?

  Good answer, Craig.

• 1:43:55Speaker 04

What was a beautiful movie, uh, What Dreams May Come? Good heaven. Um.

• 1:44:01Bill Simmons?

  Good movie?

• 1:44:02Speaker 04

  No. Good heaven.

• 1:44:04Bill Simmons?

  Robin Williams in Cuba Gooding?

• 1:44:05Speaker 04

Cuba Gooding. Good heaven. Not a great movie.

• 1:44:07Chris Ryan?

Trying to think of other heavens.

• 1:44:08Bill Simmons?

  Pretty rough movie.

• 1:44:09Speaker 04

I'll tell you something. Uh, what you just said about heaven reminds me of something Mr. Dyer told us. Uh, sophomore year of Christian Life Academy.

• 1:44:20Chris Ryan?

God damn, you- you get a lot of names of your teachers into pods. I gotta tell you.

• 1:44:24Speaker 04

Mr. Dyer told us, I remember when he was telling us about the fact that there is a- there was a dome of water.

• 1:44:30Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:30Speaker 04

Over the earth before the flood, which is why people lived that long. And during the flood, God dropped the water on us and that's what made the flood. And then right after that, after the flood, everybody stopped living as long, right? This was a whole thing.

• 1:44:44Chris Ryan?

  What did he teach?

• 1:44:45Speaker 04

This, well, this was Christian Life Academy. So like they- they teaching you calculus a little bit and then they go, let me tell you why if you don't get this right.

• 1:44:52Chris Ryan?

Well, I got you guys here.

• 1:44:53Speaker 04

Yeah. This is what he said. I remember one time he was talking about heaven and doing the whole deal. He's like, I hope you guys know that in heaven, you will work. It's not just gonna be a situation where you're hanging out and enjoying it the whole time, you're gonna wake up, you're gonna go out, you're gonna pick grain, you're gonna do something, you're gonna be a stone cobbler, there's gonna be work in heaven. And I remember looking around that class at a group of youngsters who thought that if we could only get it right on the earth, that we would be up in heaven chilling for eternity and watching this fucking guy break our hearts. So I'm telling you guys right now, in heaven, you

• 1:45:35Speaker 04

will have to be middle management for some other planet or some other civilization where you're gonna have to find people and get them on the metaphysical plane.

• 1:45:43Bill Simmons?

Okay. Are there same game parlays? Can I do Taylor fade there?

• 1:45:51Chris Ryan?

Would your idea of like who to jump into would be like, I need to jump into a guy who has access to fan rules?

• 1:46:01Bill Simmons?

I need to be in a state where there's sleepless gambling. They show me the states. I'm like, California doesn't work. Yeah, there's. Ohio, that works.

• 1:46:11Speaker 04

Is your version of heaven hitting on every bet? Or, no, because it's gonna get old, right?

• 1:46:17Bill Simmons?

This is one of those things, I, there's two types of people, the people that think about this and wonder what's gonna happen, and then the people who try not to think about it at all, and I'm in the latter camp.

• 1:46:27Speaker 04

I am so in the latter.

• 1:46:29Bill Simmons?

I'm in the latter camp. I don't like thinking about this stuff. Yeah, because it's even sadder to think about nothing happening, you know?

• 1:46:34Speaker 04

Ah, Jesus, we gotta move on, I'm about to freak out.

• 1:46:36Bill Simmons?

Just the, the TV goes off, you know?

• 1:46:41Speaker 04

I'm about to freak out for real, bro. We gotta, we could like, we gotta move on. Like, literally, I'm feeling anxiety rising in my feet right now.

• 1:46:49Bill Simmons?

Just a what, nail word for what happened the next day?

• 1:46:52Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, Jared. Tom Jared.

• 1:46:55Bill Simmons?

Probably on the superstars that summer with, on ABC.

• 1:46:58Chris Ryan?

Yeah. You think he moves on from Betty Prefest?

• 1:47:01Bill Simmons?

Might have done like a Three's Company cameo.

• 1:47:03Chris Ryan?

  Uh huh.

• 1:47:04Bill Simmons?

Maybe, maybe a Gatorade or Wheaties type of ad.

• 1:47:06Chris Ryan?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:47:07Bill Simmons?

Um, and then I think he eventually gets CT from the hit he took in the Super Bowl. He's probably eating out of a straw in nineteen seventy, nineteen ninety-two.

• 1:47:17Bill Simmons?

  That's it for Tom.

• 1:47:18Speaker 04

Uh, Corkle was committed. The very next day, he fucking loses it. The uh.

• 1:47:23Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:47:23Chris Ryan?

He is. So you don't think that when he finds out.

• 1:47:26Bill Simmons?

  Fired.

• 1:47:27Speaker 04

The very next day after he has gone through. His friend dying, his friend coming back. And then losing it again, his brain completely fucking unravels. He spends the rest of his life. He's the only one that knows. Remember, she doesn't know.

• 1:47:44Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:44Speaker 04

The only one that knows that he came back. In a different body. And then he's got to be around this guy, he's got to work with this guy.

• 1:47:53Bill Simmons?

  So he becomes an alcoholic.

• 1:47:54Speaker 04

He becomes an alcoholic, his life completely good, he tries to go, he writes books.

• 1:47:58Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:58Speaker 04

He gets a ham radio and starts trying to communicate with people. A public access TV show, like the whole nine, but nobody ever believes him, he goes crazy.

• 1:48:08Bill Simmons?

  Ends up living in Pucksham.

• 1:48:09Chris Ryan?

  Pucksham.

• 1:48:10Bill Simmons?

  Pucksham.

• 1:48:13Bill Simmons?

What piece of memorabilia would you want or not want from this movie?

• 1:48:16Chris Ryan?

Uh, any of the funny, uh, Leo Farnsworth hats, like all the outfits that he rocks in when he's first Farnsworth.

• 1:48:23Bill Simmons?

I genuinely love the Rams jackets that the guys are wearing, those windbreakers.

• 1:48:28Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:28Bill Simmons?

Those are fucking cool. I may or may not have looked on eBay for, for them, just to see if they were kicking around. But the coach has them on too.

• 1:48:35Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:35Bill Simmons?

Really, really, really cool. Uh, the clarinet would be an interesting thing to have.

• 1:48:39Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:48:40Bill Simmons?

A ticket stub for the actual preseason game.

• 1:48:43Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:48:43Bill Simmons?

The Rams, they were 1977. And then, uh, Jared's Rams jersey.

• 1:48:47Speaker 04

  That's what I have, I have Jared's jersey.

• 1:48:49Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:49Speaker 04

  It's an interesting conversation.

• 1:48:50Chris Ryan?

I miss, I miss number 16 being a pretty standard quarterback number.

• 1:48:54Bill Simmons?

Yeah, what happened? No, it's like a receiver number.

• 1:48:56Chris Ryan?

Yeah, and it's like Montana was that, Stabler was that, Vinnie Testaverde.

• 1:49:01Bill Simmons?

  Hmm.

• 1:49:01Chris Ryan?

  Jake the Snake was 16.

• 1:49:03Bill Simmons?

The Coach Finstock Award for Best Life Lesson. There's a reason for everything, there's always a plan. That was a bad James Mason.

• 1:49:13Bill Simmons?

I like that concept, though. There's a reason for everything. There's always a plan.

• 1:49:18Speaker 04

Gotta believe it even if it's not true.

• 1:49:19Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Best double feature choice, I would say shampoo. Let's just go mid seventies Beatty and knock it out.

• 1:49:26Chris Ryan?

This is a funny one. We've also done it on the rewatchables, but in the same kind of like kicking around rich people LA vibe, I would go Fletch.

• 1:49:36Speaker 04

  Oh, that's good.

• 1:49:36Bill Simmons?

  Ah.

• 1:49:37Speaker 04

  That's good.

• 1:49:38Bill Simmons?

Like it. What do you have?

• 1:49:38Speaker 04

  Meet Joe Black.

• 1:49:40Chris Ryan?

  Yeah. It's a terrible film.

• 1:49:41Bill Simmons?

  That movie sucks.

• 1:49:44Speaker 04

You guys, but this is a movie that meant a lot, okay, to us in the community. We watched it.

• 1:49:49Bill Simmons?

I had so much clear for Lanny's stock.

• 1:49:52Speaker 04

Mm hmm. She just kinda blew it over and over and over again.

• 1:49:55Bill Simmons?

Just. What was the movie she hit in?

• 1:49:57Chris Ryan?

  Mallrats. Yeah, Mallrats is iconic.

• 1:50:01Bill Simmons?

  Bought a lot of stock.

• 1:50:02Chris Ryan?

  Tony Doherty in Mallrats?

• 1:50:03Bill Simmons?

Who won the movie one of Beatty?

• 1:50:05Speaker 04

  Beatty won.

• 1:50:06Bill Simmons?

Producer Craig, never saw the movie. What do you got?

• 1:50:09Speaker 06

I feel bad. Uh oh, I, I wanted to like this movie more than I did.

• 1:50:14Chris Ryan?

I had such high hopes for you because I saw that it was an hour and forty minutes.

• 1:50:17Speaker 06

  Yep.

• 1:50:18Chris Ryan?

  And it's about football.

• 1:50:19Speaker 06

It had everything. I think honestly, that's part of, I think my expectations were high. On paper, it looked great. Uh, when I saw, I was like, wow, nine Oscars for this film, a hundred million bucks in nineteen seventy seven? I don't know. I didn't hate it by any means. I just thought it was kind of like, I thought it was well cast. I thought it felt kinda dated, it was a little slow. I don't know. It just didn't land for me.

• 1:50:39Speaker 04

Do you think the fact that it was so critically acclaimed, like changed your opinion of it going in?

• 1:50:43Speaker 06

Yeah, I think I expected to be blown away a little bit more.

• 1:50:46Chris Ryan?

Can I ask you, did you think like the first fifteen minutes where you're like, this is incredible? Like when he's like drinking the shake and watching game film and being Warren Beatty where you're like, if it's this, it's, it's gonna be great?

• 1:50:57Speaker 06

I don't know. I, I, I kinda thought like the whole, I thought it was really slow. I thought that, that scene where he's throwing and Jack Warden keeps saying, looks good. It had like the longest yard datedness to me where I was like, I don't know, man. This is feeling, I'm feeling the seventies here.

• 1:51:13Chris Ryan?

Is it the lowest ranked super seventies movie for you?

• 1:51:16Speaker 06

No, Death Wish is below that.

• 1:51:20Speaker 04

  It's a little woke.

• 1:51:22Speaker 06

But you know, it's just, I think this is more of a product of just what Hollywood was in the late seventies, which is like, it's delightful that this movie got nine Oscars and made a hundred million bucks. It's great.

• 1:51:32Speaker 04

What year were you born again?

• 1:51:33Speaker 06

  1994.

• 1:51:35Speaker 04

Jesus. Like, like it, how many movies do you like where like God or heaven is in the movie?

• 1:51:41Speaker 06

  I love Bruce Almighty.

• 1:51:42Speaker 04

Okay, cuz like that stopped being a thing after a while.

• 1:51:45Speaker 06

  Bruce Almighty.

• 1:51:45Speaker 04

Bruce Almighty is a good one.

• 1:51:47Speaker 06

  Uh huh.

• 1:51:48Speaker 04

But like, cuz I think that like in my era, there were still a lot of movies with that. I think that stuff kinda turns people off now.

• 1:51:54Speaker 06

I think it's hard, like comedies for me, I, I grew up with a, in a great time with comedy. Like those are the movies that I remember the most. And so a comedy from the seventies, I just think naturally it feels dated, the, the way that comedy was written.

• 1:52:07Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:52:07Speaker 06

And it was shot. I, I didn't think this movie was directed that well. I thought it was just like a little bit.

• 1:52:10Speaker 04

  Wow.

• 1:52:11Speaker 06

Kinda sloppy. I thought the writing was good.

• 1:52:13Bill Simmons?

Not impressed with Warren Beatty and Buck Henry.

• 1:52:14Speaker 04

  Wow, wow.

• 1:52:15Speaker 06

I thought it was well-written. I thought it was well-passed.

• 1:52:17Bill Simmons?

We should send him, we should send him this clip.

• 1:52:19Speaker 06

  Yeah. I thought it was well-acted. I don't know.

• 1:52:22Bill Simmons?

It's not gonna be all home runs with Craig.

• 1:52:24Speaker 06

  No.

• 1:52:25Speaker 04

What didn't you like about Death Wish?

• 1:52:27Speaker 06

  The entire movie?

• 1:52:29Speaker 04

  It's a tough one.

• 1:52:31Speaker 06

The most brutal opening scene anyone ever needs, you know, Bronson.

• 1:52:37Speaker 04

Question of the politics in the movie.

• 1:52:40Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:52:41Bill Simmons?

We don't judge in the rewatch.

• 1:52:42Speaker 04

  Yeah, pre-two.

• 1:52:45Bill Simmons?

It's pre a lot of things.

• 1:52:46Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:52:46Speaker 06

Who is, who's Beatty right now? They remake this movie.

• 1:52:50Bill Simmons?

  Gosling.

• 1:52:51Speaker 04

  Hmm, that's a good one.

• 1:52:52Speaker 06

  That's a really good one.

• 1:52:53Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:52:54Speaker 04

He almost is the Warren Beatty, no, maybe.

• 1:52:59Speaker 06

Well, he, he's not like a ladies' man per se, cuz he's married.

• 1:53:02Speaker 04

  Very, very, very.

• 1:53:04Bill Simmons?

Warren Beatty would've played Ken in Barbie. He would've done that.

• 1:53:06Speaker 04

  Hmm.

• 1:53:07Speaker 06

  Hmm.

• 1:53:08Bill Simmons?

  He would've taken that risk.

• 1:53:09Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:53:10Speaker 06

And Gosling's already got the football. Remember the Titans?

• 1:53:12Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:53:13Speaker 04

Yep. He was a pussy in that, though. He was.

• 1:53:18Bill Simmons?

That's it for Big Ass Seventies Month.

• 1:53:20Speaker 06

  Well done.

• 1:53:20Bill Simmons?

CR, Van, had a great time.

• 1:53:22Speaker 06

  I'm sorry.

• 1:53:23Bill Simmons?

Didn't have his good time. Craig, don't ever apologize.

• 1:53:25Speaker 06

I didn't hate it. I had a perfectly nice night watching it.

• 1:53:29Bill Simmons?

Thanks to, uh, Jack and Ronic as well.

• 1:53:33Bill Simmons?

No bad opinions, it's a podcast. Uh, we'll be back next week and it won't be a, won't be a seventies. Thanks.
